Neil Coyle has blasted claims of "serious procedural infringements" in his constituency's trigger ballot votes as "utter nonsense", after 63 of his party members, and counting, signed an open letter calling on Labour's National Executive Committee (NEC) to intervene.

Coyle has staved off deselection after just one of his ten local branches voted in favour of open selection, with majority support coming from affiliates too, despite vocal opposition within the party from the pro-Corbyn wing.

Now allegations of underhand campaign tactics thrown from both sides on Twitter have escalated to an open letter sent to the party's National Executive Committee.

The letter's signatories - which the News understands are mostly Momentum members - claim the "procedural infringements" by Coyle and his campaigning team "made a material difference on the outcome of the vote as a whole".

• And - most sensationally - claims of intimidation by Coyle himself.

In one “disturbing” example given, Coyle allegedly "sent a text message late at night to a member saying that “the clock is ticking” and that he was looking forward to reading about the position they would be taking when they spoke at the trigger ballot meeting.

Speaking to this paper on Thursday he: • Claimed allegations that canvassing had been done on parliamentary phones and using withheld numbers were "completely untrue" and said he had the records to prove it: "I am 100% sure that I have not broken any rules," he said.

Harriet Harman vowed to continue her bid to become Speaker of the House of Commons despite opposition from her own constituency party members.

This week, her Camberwell and Peckham members called on her to pull out - or face deselection as her seat’s

automatic candidate in the next general election.

The motion proposed by Nick Wrack, not to support her campaign, was approved by a margin of four votes (26-22) and seven abstentions.

In a statement made on Twitter, Harman said her commitment to the people of Camberwell and Peckham was “unshakable” and claimed the “overwhelming majority” of members supported her bid to

be a “strong and fair Speaker”, vowing: “I will not back down”.

Wrack, who stood against Harman as a Trade Unionist Socialist Coalition candidate in 2015, said of the decision: “Camberwell & Peckham decided democratically that we’d rather have a Labour MP in parliament than Harriet Harman as Speaker. Other Labour CLPs may agree to lose their MP’s voice so that the MP can become Speaker. That’s

their choice.”

He slammed the criticism of his motives – including widespread condemnation of “misogyny” from MPs, councillors and members in support of Harman’s Speaker campaign as “perfectly predictable outrage, vitriol and abuse from those who cannot tolerate any attempt by a Constituency Labour Party to have any sort of democratic say about what their MP does.”

A dog-lover and philosophy fan from Elephant and Castle has penned his first book, inspired by the deep thinking canines encountered across Southwark’s parks.

Twenty-eight-year-old Sam Dodson, who moved to Southwark three years ago to pursue his dream of becoming a writer, said a particularly pensive dog sparked the idea for the book.

“I was walking through the park and I noticed this Golden Retriever standing stock-still, staring intently at the trunk of a tree,” Sam told the News.

“This dog was there for so long, just staring, occasionally tilting its head from side to side, and in that moment it was clear to me that it was obviously having some very important, philosophical thoughts.”

Sam and his sister Rosie began creating the illustrated book, which explores the minds of well-known thinkers Karl Barks, Sun-Shih-tzu and Mary Woof-stonecraft.

The result, Philosophers’ Dogs explores all the important questions; whether is it possible to be a ‘good’ dog, ‘are tennis balls real’, and whether one’s bark is truly worse than a bite, and is illustrated with images of dogs they’ve met in parks across Southwark.

The duo are now Crowdfunding to cover the cost of publishing the book via Unbound, and are offering the chance for anyone who supports the project to have their own pet immortalised with a “paw-trait”.

Another “reward” for anyone who pre-orders a copy is the chance to join Sam and his Labrador Reg on a group walk through Southwark’s parks to discuss life’s great mysteries.

“I love the idea of getting all these dog owners, walkers and philosophy enthusiasts together for a giant dog walk in London.

JOHN PEAKS after six years!

Six years after he was forced to turn back half way up Mount Snowdon while attempting to complete the three peaks 24-hour challenge, ex News journo John finally reached the summit.

Forty-nine-year-old John Prendergast was delighted to conquer Wales’ highest mountain over the August bank holiday weekend, after the bitter disappointment of falling at the last hurdle in 2013.

Back then he was one of a nine – strong Southwark News and readers team raising much-needed funds for Evelina Children’s Hospital.

“I did two – Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike – but half way up Snowdon I was falling further and further behind the others,” he remembered.

“My legs had just gone and we had to call it off and turn back. I was a bit peed off at the time.

“But the others were so far ahead, trying to make it to the top in time, as it was a 24-hour challenge.”

In total, the News raised more than £100,000 for children with lifethreatening and severe conditions after the sponsored three peaks challenge, an epic Full Monty night in Old Kent Road, and a host of other fundraising challenges from staff and local readers.

John, now a teaching assistant in the midlands, said not completing the third peak felt like a “bit of a dirty secret”.

“Walking back down, that day six years ago, I said to myself ‘I’m going to come back here and do this again,” he explained.

John was greeted with a welcome party at the top - wife Becky and their two sons Sean, seven, and Connor, six, who had made the trip into a family holiday. They, however, enjoyed a leisurely train ride up to the top followed by a nice hot meal.

He quickly texted the original News team, to complain that they’d left in the minibus instead of waiting...

But has reaching the summit made him fancy giving the full three peaks another go?

“I’m never going up the other two again,” he laughed, “it was just

Murdered Joshua Boadu had been excited for his firstever family holiday to Canada, planned for the day after he was stabbed, family members revealed in an emotional statement read at the Old Bailey.

On Monday, a man and a boy were found guilty of murdering the popular 23-year-old – known as SJ - in broad daylight in Bermondsey on June 11 last year.

Denilson Davis, 21 from Hemel Hempstead, and a sixteen-year-old boy who cannot be named, will be sentenced on Monday, September 30 for the ‘senseless’ knife attack.

A motive has never been established for the stabbing, which sadly caused Joshua’s death eleven days later at King’s College Hospital.

“Words cannot begin to describe how life has been since Josh’s passing and he will be forever in our hearts,” said Joshua’s grieving family.

“Words cannot describe how the heartache and emotional anguish this senseless killing has caused and the impact on the family has been astronomical.

“Josh had his whole life ahead of him and he was full of so much untapped potential, but his life was cut short due to a vicious and senseless murder.

“Things will never be the same for us and we have to live with this for the rest of our lives.

“Knowing Josh cannot celebrate another birthday or Christmas brings all the emotion back to us.

“Things that ‘could have been’ are amongst the hardest of things to forget and move forward when you lose a child, brother, uncle and friend like Josh.”

The trial heard how Davis drove to the scene in a Peugeot on Bermondsey’s Linsey Street with the sixteen-yearold as his passenger.

Police inquiries are ongoing to track a third man in the car, 19-year-old Matthew Adebiyi, in connection with the killing. He has reportedly fled to Nigeria.

SJ was seen on CCTV cameras cycling across Linsey Street at 6.11pm, walking back across the road two minutes later, before disappearing from view at 6.14pm.

stabbed and was seen on camera running towards Lucey Way. At the same time the Peugeot could be seen driving out of Linsey Street and away from the scene.

Witnesses described seeing SJ pushed up against a parked car and being surrounded by three men, all of whom began attacking him.

One then produced a knife and stabbed him. One of the trio was Joshua Boadu who was affectionally known as SJ wearing a distinctive blue tracksuit, matching Davis’s clothing at the time.

SJ managed to duck under the arm of one of his attackers before seeking refuge at an address on Lucey Way. The investigation discovered that both Davis and the youth tried to call Joshua after the attack.

The court also heard that while Joshua later lay in his hospital bed suffering from chest, neck and arm injuries, the youth and Adebiyi were filmed in a ‘celebratory mood’ at around 11.30pm in a Peckham Rye recording studio.

On June 16, on-duty officers spotted the Peugeot on Eastern Road, in Brockley, which parked nearby before the driver got out and ran away.

A Ford Focus was later seen driving up and down the same road – and when stopped, Davis was found to be a passenger.

Although nothing was found on Davis and his driver when searched, police seized the Peugeot – where they found fingerprints belonging to Doves were released at SJ’s funeral, and inset, floral tributes in Lucey Way, near to where he was stabbed to death Davis as well as the youth’s DNA. A bloodstain on the rear passenger seat matched SJ’s DNA, the court heard.

Police also discovered a large hunting knife in the driver’s door pocket along with a Nokia. Davis admitted in court that both items belonged to him.

“SJ was attacked in broad daylight on a Bermondsey estate, succumbing to his injuries several days later,” said Detective Inspector Ian Titterrell.

“We have never been able to establish a motive for this senseless killing.

“A thorough police investigation by my team, not to mention some great work from borough officers who proactively stopped two cars which yielded vital evidence, has led to today’s convictions.

“While of course SJ’s family remain devastated, I hope today’s result brings them some comfort.”

Davis was arrested on September 27 last year at an address in Innes Street, Peckham, and the youth on February 13, 2019.

Stray cricket balls from Burgess Park Community Pitches are a “risk to life” say Cobourg Road residents, who have seen dozens fly over a low fence into their homes and gardens.

Andrew Bilby, from 103 Cobourg Road, said his complaints have been “fobbed off” by Southwark Council for over a year.

Last summer he was told that planning permission was needed to raise the height of the fence backing onto the playing fields from 3.6 metres to 6.4m and would be submitted.

But a balls-up meant the planning application was shelved, and now he’s been told there wasn’t enough cash left for the work to take place until 2020.

Since then, he alone has counted around twenty hard balls that careered into communal gardens where children are often playing, or smashed into the roof.

One night alone in August last year saw five flying over the fence. But after approaching the teams playing, one umpire allegedly told him the safest thing to do was to “keep the kids inside”.

Andrew’s landlord has had to replace seventeen smashed tiles – and says he has sent the bill to the council to reimburse.

“It’s beyond annoying now, since

According to residents, several cars have been targeted in the area by criminals hoping to profit from precious metals and their increasing value for scrap.

According to the data, the reading for NO2 in the inner-city Southwark postcode is a whopping 102mg per m3, well over double the legal limit of 40mg per m3.

The pollutant has been linked with a number of adverse health effects, most notably increased respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis

and COPD. Campaigning group, Central Office of Public Interest, has used the data to build a website to check addresses anywhere in the capital.

After inputting a postcode, addresses are ranked from one to five, depending on how polluted they are, and by how much NO2 levels breach the 40mg limit.

According to the environmental pressure group, polling shows that Londoners think a discount of up to twenty per cent should be applicable to properties in highly-polluted areas – which would be over £140,000 for the average Southwark property.

Southwark ranks high for ‘county lines’ dealing

Southwark was among the London boroughs referring the greatest number of young people to a programme tackling the problem of ‘county lines’ dealing, new data reveals.

County lines gangs are where youngsters from big cities are used to transport drugs to regional towns and cities for sale – with criminals using dedicated phone numbers to take orders.

The practice often involves coercion and intimidation, including sexual violence, with criminals using social media networks to recruit vulnerable young people into the practise.

The City Hall report also reveals that 4,013 people in London, the youngest of whom was just elevenyears-old, were discovered or suspected to be involved in county lines activity between January 2018 and April 2019.

In Southwark, 35 young people were referred to the City Hall-funded ‘Rescue and Response’ programme

which aims to provide interventions to vulnerable people at risk of getting sucked into the gangs.

Only the boroughs of Newham, Lambeth and Croydon – all with 37 individuals – had more referrals in the same period, according to the data.

In total, 568 were referred to the project in its first year, while the counties of Norfolk, Hampshire and Essex were identified as the most likely locations for county lines exporting from London.

country, exploiting vulnerable young people and driving gang-related violence,” said Mayor Sadiq Khan.

“We are supporting young people where we can, but we know we’re only scratching the surface of a major national issue that is driving violence in London and across the country.”

Criminals who have been convicted of the practice include a member of the Silwood Nation drill group from Bermondsey, nineteen-year-old Daniel Olaloko.

When officers raided Olaloko’s flat at the University of Central

Lancashire in April last year, they discovered ‘large amounts’ of Class A drugs, a sword and knives.

Olaloko, also known by his stage name ‘Trigga T’, was sentenced to seven years behind bars for his role leading the county lines gang supplying drugs from London to Preston.

In January, the National Crime Agency estimated there to be around 2,000 deal line numbers and an estimated 1,000 branded county lines in operation, most commonly supplying crack cocaine and heroin.

ne of the borough’s most iconic thoroughfares, the Old Kent Road, will be transformed by development in the years to come - the scale and duration of which council officials say is ‘unique’ and ‘once in a generation’ for Southwark.

Five ‘districts’ surrounding the road will be transformed by the Old Kent Road Area Action Plan.

These areas - Mandela Way at the road’s northern end, the former Cantium Retail Park, Sandgate Street & Verney Road, Ilderton Road, and South Bermondsey – cover approximately a square mile.

“The vision for the Old Kent Road is to build on its unique creative character, a place where industry can thrive alongside new homes and quality open spaces,” said Cllr Johnson Situ, Southwark Council Cabinet Member for Growth, Development and Planning.

Up to 20,000 homes will be built, 35 per cent of which are deemed ‘affordable’ including five thousand at social rent levels, in line with council policy.

Ten thousand new jobs, two new primary schools and three new parks are also promised.

However, regeneration campaigners

have particularly criticised the council’s approach to ‘viability assessments’ – used to measure how much affordable and social housing a scheme can support, amid a slew of major projects being approved in quick succession for the area earlier this year.

“All, though, are technically nonviable, according to their viability assessments, so should be unable, in theory, to meet this affordable housing requirement,” state lobby group, the 35% campaign.

This, say campaigners, is “something of a ritual” for developers, alleging that developers involved in the Old Kent Road area will deliver the affordable housing required by policy, but not the true amount the scheme can afford.

Cllr Situ told the News: “We have

already secured over 1,000 social rent homes along the Old Kent Road and we are continuing to push developers to provide as much essential affordable housing as possible, especially at social rents.”

The trade-off for more housing is more high-rises, Cllr Situ admits.

“The fact is being a central London borough we do not have the luxury of vast amounts of land,” he said.

Among the tallest is a 48-storey residential tower – the fourth largest of its kind in London – as part of the Cantium Retail Park plans approved in March.

The Southernwood retail park development, on the northern section of the road, will also see buildings ranging from nine to 48-storeys in height after being approved by councillors in June.

“We recognise local concerns over the step change and to respond to the concerns raised we have focused tall buildings around tube stations and new parks, preserving the important views in Southwark and London,” he said.

Among those raising concerns were residents of Ossory Road, close to ASDA. As a result, buildings at the site will not be more than tenstoreys, according to council bosses.

Much of the development is contingent, too, on the extension of the Bakerloo tube line.

Phase one of the masterplan will see 9,500 new homes built, and a further 10,500 homes would be ‘unlocked’ in phase two if the Bakerloo line extension is built.

Plans to extend the line from Elephant & Castle through the Old Kent Road opportunity area to Lewisham would see two new stations, one at the junction with Dunton Road and another on the former Toys R Us site near the junction with Asylum Road.

TfL told the News it remained “fully committed” to the Bakerloo extension, and that a further consultation would begin next month.

“I remain committed to progressing an upgrade to and extension of the Bakerloo line,” said Mayor Khan at Mayor’s Question Time this month.

“Following the previous public consultation in spring 2017, Transport for London (TfL) has been working with stakeholders, including the London Boroughs of Southwark and Lewisham

to develop the scheme.

“This includes its design and how it could be funded and if necessary, financed.”

However, fewer than half of those homes are currently only in the planning stages because of the uncertainty over the Bakerloo line extension.

Council leader, Peter John, has pointed the finger at the Government, saying there was a ‘paralysis’ in Westminster over the estimated £3.5bn project.

“There are developers lined up but what will happen without the line being built? This is no way to run a capital city,” he said earlier this month at the London Infrastructure Summit.

The extension has been backed by eighteen thousand residents in Southwark and Lambeth.

The Department for Transport said it had not yet received any request from TfL for central Government funding at this early stage.

Council bosses have also pledged a ‘community review panel’ to have a group of stakeholders to comment and review planning applications in addition to the normal consultation process.

The idea, said Cllr Situ, would be for local residents to shape developments alongside the consultation process.

“This will be the first time we are introducing this in the borough and Southwark will be one of the first to introduce it across the London,” he said.

The winner of the annual Peckham Architecture Award, revived after a 40-year gap, has been announced.

The judging panel - including architectural writer Rory Olcayto, and members of the Peckham Society’s committee - selected Bellenden Primary School as winner.

Designed by Cottrell and Vermuelen Architects, judge Bill Morris described the building as a “kaleidoscope of activity and colour”.

“The rooftop playground is particularly wonderful. It’s strong and bright and Peckham and enlivens a forgotten corner of SE15,” he said.

Tendai Muswere, 26, was jailed for a total of three years last Thursday, September 19, at Southwark Crown Court after previously pleading guilty to two counts of manufacturing a prohibited firearm and two counts of possessing a prohibited firearm.

He had claimed the firearms were for a sci-fi film he was making for a university project – and even claimed he found ammunition rounds in a park.

Police previously raided Muswere’s home on Pimlico’s Lillington Gardens Estate twice because of his ‘known links’ to cannabis growing.

While there, they found two 3-D printers that were in the process of printing a revolver barrel, and numerous components for making Washbear and Reprringer guns – both of which are 3-D printable firearms.

printed cylinder for a handgun out the kitchen window as police forced their way inside.

Experts found that the only pieces missing for many of Muswere’s printed handguns to become lethal weapons were steel tube sleevings needed to cover the handguns.

But Muswere had repeatedly searched for these on the internet, found investigators.

“Muswere claimed that the firearms found in his flat were made for a university film project and were incapable of firing deadly shots,” said Claire Holder, from the Crown Prosecution Service.

“However, he was using 3-D designs found on the internet which were specifically for the making of live firearms.

“Evidence also showed that he had made repeated attempts to print the weapons, which we believe showed that he was trying to perfect a workable firearm.”

It is illegal to possess or manufacture prohibited weapons without a licence.

The prosecution is believed to be the first of its kind in the UK.

GP surgey slammed by health watchdog

Peckham’s The Acorn & Gaumont House GP Surgery was rated “inadequate” by the care watchdog in a damning report published last week.

The Care Quality Commission highlighted safety concerns including how high-risk medicines were managed, an “inconsistent approach to the management of safeguarding concerns”, and a “lack of effective governance” which put patients at risk of harm.

Inspections were held in July 2019 after concerns were first highlighted in April 2018. Previously rated a “good” provider, inspectors found standards had deteriorated.

Interviews with patients, and comments from the national GP patient survey, showed some had found it difficult to get care and treatment at the practice.

The CQC did, however, note that the practice had taken steps to improve following this feedback.

The surgery has been placed in special measures and will be inspected again within six months to make sure improvements are made.

Head of inspection for primary medical services in London, Antony Hall, said: “We are placing this service in special measures. Services placed in special measures will be inspected again within six months.

“The service will be kept under review and if needed could be escalated to urgent enforcement action.

The Peckham High Street surgery provides care to around 9,800 people in Southwark.

If it doesn’t show enough improvement by the inspectors’ next visit, it could face government action.

Practice manager Sharif Rahman said: “The practice is disappointed by the CQC’s findings, but we recognise the need to be compliant with the regulator and have already taken substantial steps towards making the improvements requested.

A historic Blackfriars building once the home of the teetotal Sons of Temperance Friendly Society has been bought by an Italian furniture designer.

The Grade II-listed building at 176 Blackfriars Road may now become Pianca’s new London HQ or a flagship furniture store after being sold for £4.4million.

The building was originally the headquarters of the London Grand Division of the sobriety society from 1910 to 2013. Initially built on the site of two terraced houses in 1910 for the society, the building bears the Sons of Temperance name above

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after an alleged assault by an OAP armed with a metal bar on a man in his 30s.

Officers say they were called a communal area in Barrett House, on Browning Street, in August to a report of a 34-year-old victim being “beaten about the head with a metal bar”.

At the scene they arrested a 73-yearold OAP on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

He was subsequently released on bail from a south London police station.

The injured man was hospitalised with injuries said to be “not life-

threatening”.

The incident took place at 8pm on Monday, August 26.

Detective Constable Nick Heywood said: “I know there were witnesses to this incident who have not yet spoken with police and I would like to ask those people to make contact and tell us what they saw.

“If you were there either before, after or during this incident, please contact us.

Universal Credit ‘cost council £5.6m in rent arrears’

Three years after Universal Credit first came to Southwark, the council is facing a rent black hole of £5.6 million as tenants are pushed into poverty, a new report claims.

Safe as Houses 3 is the latest in a series of reports analysing the impact the government’s flagship benefits

reform policy has had on claimants’ finances - and the knock-on effect for Southwark Council; one of the first local authorities to trial the new system in 2016.

According to its authors - think-tank The Smith Institute - the latest data shows that the issues are not simply “teething problems”.

The new figures show that the average Southwark tenant moved onto Universal Credit in 2016 had

rent arrears of £648. For those first claiming in 2018, this figure was £207.

If this continues, the council would be owed £5.6 million by its tenants by 2024/5.

In total, five per cent of rent owed was not paid over the period for both the 2016 and 2018 groups, both of whom accrued more debt than under Housing Benefit. Although people who began claiming in 2018 do have lower rent arrears, on average, than those in 2016,

the council says this is mostly due to what is known as “alternative payment arrangements”.

The Department for Work and Pensions refuted this interpretation of the data. A spokesperson for the DWP, said: “It is wrong to attribute the rise in rent arrears to Universal Credit.

Many tenants arrive on Universal Credit with pre-existing arrears, and there has been an upward trend in rent arrears which began before the benefit

was introduced. Alternative payment arrangements allow for payments to be made directly to the landlord if the tenant is likely to have difficulty in managing their rent payments.”

But Southwark Council’s cabinet member for finance, performance and Brexit, Cllr Victoria Mills, said: “How is anyone expected to survive in London with no money for five weeks, not least those who are already seriously struggling financially?

s The News has been covering, I have just been overwhelmingly reselected as Labour’s candidate for Bermondsey and Old Southwark at the next election!

I had the backing of the vast majority of members’ branches and affiliated organisations (including trade unions). This was a great result on a personal level and I hope an endorsement of my efforts on behalf of everyone living and working in our community.

As local people know from my votes, I do not always agree with everything Labour does nationally but I’m proud to have served our community in Parliament for the past four years. I’ve won extra support for some disabled people, helped end punitive sanctions on many local people, and changed terror laws after the attack at London Bridge and Borough Market. My votes at Westminster have also reflected most Labour members and supporters locally, especially on Brexit where I have been consistently opposed, including voting against triggering Article 50.

We do not know when the next election will come, but it seems unlikely before Christmas. Before then, Johnson has to handle the fallout of breaking the law in stopping Parliament sitting.

Johnson has no mandate from the electorate and no majority in Westminster to suspend democracy. MPs collectively represent the votes of over thirty million people, but Johnson attempted to sideline our crucial role and avoid scrutiny of his false claims and damaging plans.

Johnson lied (again) about negotiations. He has put no

alternative plan to the EU. The UK Government drafted the ‘backstop’ to protect peace in Northern Ireland and the rest of our country. Johnson has no alternative and has no right to risk our collective security or the break up of the United Kingdom if his disastrous No Deal goes ahead.

Johnson thinks he is heir to Churchill but has thrown Churchill’s actual grandson out of the Tory Party! Johnson behaves more like Mugabe, both in his disrespect of democracy and in the potential outcome of his No Deal policy: food shortages; insufficient medicine; fuel shortages; and inadequate energy supplies to keep our country running. We must all resist his plans to downgrade and breakup our country.

Last week I met with London South Bank University’s new students at the Elephant and Castle. Inevitably Brexit was one of their big issues, but they are also paying higher tuition fees, some of their adult learners pay the Bedroom Tax and have been hit by Universal Credit, and crime was also a topic for discussion.

Our community has lost over 400 police officers and PCSOs since 2010 and many people feel less safe as a result. Johnson now claims he wants more police back but voted for their cuts when an MP previously and then, as the former Mayor, implemented the cuts which have had such devastating consequences across London.

Johnson expects voters to be stupid and forget his track record whenever the election comes.

I think he underestimates the people of this community and country massively and look forward to him being thrown out of office as soon as possible.

ext week marks the launch of this year’s Stoptober challenge.

Starting on 1 October, smokers are encouraged and supported to quit smoking, first over an initial 28-day period, then hopefully for good.

If you are a smoker, quitting is the best thing you can do for your health and the wellbeing of those around you. It helps you feel healthier, save money and protect the people you love from the harm of second-hand smoke.

There’s been good progress.

Nationally, smoking is at an all-time low, and in Southwark, the smoking rate has fallen by almost a third since 2012.

But despite the clear health and financial benefits of kicking the habit, it’s not always that easy to give up – especially without the right support. In

Southwark there are over 30,000 households in the borough still home to at least one smoker.

We know that many smokers try to quit using sheer willpower, which may work for some, but the evidence shows that it’s much easier to do so with the right support and using a variety of methods that work for you.

That’s where the Stoptober campaign and local smoking support services come in. They help smokers quit through several support options, including face-to-face help from local pharmacists and the specialist stop smoking service in Southwark.

The Southwark stop smoking service is available all year round and with their help you are three times more likely to quit than if you go it alone. The service has trained advisers to help you quit, regular sessions to encourage you to keep going, and expert advice on the choice of medication that works for you.

Over the past eight years, Stoptober has supported 1.9 million people on the quit journey – providing advice, encouragement and practical support. And if you can make it to 28-days without smoking, then you’re five times more likely to give up completely.

Dual crossword Engagement needed to ensure council meets its tall aims

veryone agrees that the need for housing in the borough is acute. In response, the Old Kent Road is among the areas earmarked for regeneration, as we report this week.

In a two-wave plan, up to twenty thousand homes are projected to be built, alongside new parks, tube stations, and other amenities. The scale would be ‘unique’ in Southwark, say officials.

Contentious, as is usually the case, is the height of the buildings that will come to dominate the Old Kent Road. The Southernwood retail park development will see a 48-storey tower, as will the Cantium Retail Park development – reportedly the fourth largest of its kind in the capital.

This will be an unprecedented step-change in scale for the area. But the council’s development chief say that given the paucity of available land in inner-city London for housing, the only direction is up. The council’s pledge that developers will only build the tallest structures close to newly-proposed Tube stations and parks will need to be closely scrutinised by residents.

Loss of industrial space is another key concern from business owners, who have already seen what they call an industrial flight out of Southwark. How should we balance the genuine need for more housing with retaining the spaces we need for our economy and employment?

How they fit into this plan, which ones are saved and which aren’t deemed of enough importance, is a question we will return to next week in another special two-page feature.

Much of the development will only come online if the estimated £3.5bn Bakerloo extension is built. Pressure by those thousands of residents backing the extension campaign will have to be put onto the authorities when the time comes, if the extension is adequately funded.

Scrutiny, too, will have to be paid to the quantity of affordable and social homes in each tranche of homes being built as part of the two-stage plan. Major developments accepted thus far meet council policy requirements of being 35 per cent ‘affordable’.

But local campaigners say that developers could afford to build more affordable and social homes. They argue that developers’ insistence that their schemes cannot technically build the required affordable housing but committing to building them is evidence they may be able to build more. Campaigners may well have a point: developers after all are not charities.

Last week, Cabinet put forward a draft consultation charter aiming to ensure that ‘regeneration is working for all’. Engagement will be needed to make sure the transformation of the Old Kent Road meets that aim.

Duchess visits peckham

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, visited a Peckham community centre for children and young people this week.

During her visit to the Sunshine House Children and Young People’s Development Centre, Her Royal Highness met a team of specialist nurses who work with first-time parents aged 24 and below.

She also met young parents who have been supported by the Family Nurse Partnership team at the

Evelina London.

The programme, which sees a specially-trained nurse visit young parents until their child is two, helps young mums have a healthy pregnancy.

One young parent, Amina Deen, who lives in Elephant and Castle, spoke to the Duchess about the support she received, having being helped with her three-year-old daughter Ramira (pictured above).

“The Duchess was lovely and down to earth,” she said.

“She was very interested in Ramira and asked lots of questions about the support I received from the Evelina

London FNP team and seemed very impressed by the service.”

“It was fantastic to welcome our Patron, The Duchess of Cambridge, back to Evelina London to meet our Family Nurse Partnership team,” added Janet Powell, the Evelina’s Director of Nursing.

“They do a truly fantastic job supporting young parents to provide the very best care possible to their children.”

The hospital is celebrating its 150th birthday this year, having being founded in 1869 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in memory of his wife, Evelina.

The difficulties faced each year deciding which secondary school to apply to for your child remains one of the biggest education decisions for parents and carers...

You can’t expect to name a secondary school and assume that your child will automatically be offered a place. It is simply a case of listing the schools you prefer and awaiting the outcome of the allocation process.

It is vital that you get the order of preferences right on your child’s primary to secondary transfer application. You may be tempted to name just one school on the online application as it is the only school you want for your child. However, there are no guarantees that your child will be offered this school. To increase the chances of your child being offered a preferred school, we strongly advise you to list up to six preferences on their application.

It is all too easy just to go by hearsay and reputations - visit the schools for yourself.

A school that may never have been in your mind before could offer subjects or have specialist facilities that would better suit your child more than the school that was originally top of your list.

There are various types of secondary schools to choose from including academies, voluntary aided, foundation, free and independent schools. And it is here where the oversubscription criteria vary. It is important you fully understand the oversubscription criteria and match

them to your own circumstances. Some schools are heavily oversubscribed, with hundreds applying for just 120 – 300 places.

When you go to an open day, make sure you find out how many applications the school usually receives - this information will also be printed in the Starting Secondary school in Southwark 2019/2020 brochure and the Starting secondary school in Lambeth 2020/21 booklet.

The more people who apply for a school for their children, the bigger the risk that your child might not be offered a place at that school. Armed with this knowledge, you should be better placed to put your preferences down.

Do use all six preferences - however, you need to be wary about only choosing schools which are heavily over-subscribed You should name your first preference school on the application, but also list preferences where your child has a realistic chance of being offered a place.

As the local paper, we have often seen situations where parents and carers have only listed oversubscribed schools as preferences on their child’s application and consequently have not been offered a place at any of them. So, from being in a position where they had the luxury of being able to name preferred schools, they were left feeling like they had no option but to accept the alternative school they had been allocated by the local authority - this is likely to be the nearest school to the child’s home which has a vacancy. This offer of a school place will remain available unless the local authority is notified of any other suitable alternative arrangement for education that

has been made for their child.

Applying for secondary schools can be emotionally difficult. It is such a vital decision for your child’s future. If your child is in Year 6 and currently attending one of Southwark’s or Lambeth’s primary schools, you will receive further information from your child’s school.

If you are a Southwark resident you must apply online at: www.southwark.gov.uk/ schooladmissions or If you are a Lambeth resident you must apply online at www.lambeth.gov.uk/ eadmissions The online application process gets rid of the paperwork and is available to use 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The

site allows users to save, continue or make changes to their application, right up until the closing date and your details are safe and secure. You can of course print a copy of your application to keep and can also view the outcome online. The closing date to submit the online application is 31 October 2019 by 11.59pm.

You also need to ensure that you submit a school Supplementary Information Form (SIF) to the schools you apply for that need these, to the school by their deadline.

These ask for further information, such as religious observance or regarding school specialisms. Where a school requires your child to sit an admissions banding test, it is vital that they sit the test. Children will be invited to the test once a SIF has been received at the school. Failure to provide a SIF to the school by their deadline and your child sitting a banding test, where these are needed, may significantly reduce the chances of your child being offered a place at a school on your application.

Children who have an Education, Health and Care Plan follow a different admissions process and parents and carers must contact the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Team within their local authority for further advice.

Once you have made your preferences and submitted your online application by the closing date, your application will be processed. If you have successfully submitted your online application before the closing date, you will be able to view the results of your application on the eAdmissions website (www.eadmissions. org.uk) during the evening of 2 March 2020. You will also be sent an email in

the evening of 2 March 2020 which will contain information on what to do next.

If it was not possible to offer a place at any of your preferred schools, then the School Admissions Team will allocate your child an alternative secondary school.

This is likely to be the nearest school to your child’s home which has a vacancy.

You also have the right to appeal against the decision not to offer your child a place at a preferred school. The email containing the outcome of your child’s application will include information about how to appeal.

If it has not been possible to offer a place at any schools named as a higher preference on your child’s application, your child’s name will automatically be added to the waiting lists of these schools. You may also ask for your child’s name to be added to the waiting list of any out of borough schools listed on your application. Please contact the local authority the school is located in for further information.

If your child has been offered a secondary school place, you have until 16 March 2020 to respond to this offer. For those who live in Southwark, if the School Admissions Team do not hear from you by this date, your offer will automatically be accepted and your child’s details forwarded to the allocated school. If you live in Lambeth, the School Admissions Team require all offers to be responded to, ie accepting these by 16 March 2020.

Only if you reject the offer and also provide details of any alternative arrangement you have made for your child’s education, will your child’s place be withdrawn and offered to the next child on the school’s waiting list.

Slick & punchy performance

In The Vaults, fringe theatre has a true home. Hosting the Vaults Festival every year, the venue has established a reputation for supporting brilliant work.

So comes Shida by Jeannette Bayardelle, for its UK premier.

Originally performed offBroadway, the show arrives in South London for a 4 week run, writes Christopher Peacock...

One man/woman shows can be hard to keep the audience enthralled for long periods of time. The idea of a one-handed musical has always given me the impression of a concert, an evening with...Adele or Diana Ross, not a musical so to speak. So I was

pleased to have my view examined by a punchy performance piece.

The key to the show lies entirely with writer and performer Jeannette Bayardelle. The story of a working class girl from a broken home in New York, and the drama and toils often seen in female working class stories, is carried on the shoulders of her amazing talent. Well-handled multirolling keeps the narrative moving between songs, however, it is in these musical numbers where her skill truly shines. Her impressive vocals bring the story to life, and even if the moves become a little repetitive, you cannot deny the vocal quality and control.

Having gone down with rave

reviews when originally produced off-Broadway, it comes as no surprise how slick and well run the performance is. As a tool to show Bayerdelle’s many talents, it is the perfect vehicle.

Those looking for a show that will stay with them for days may find more powerful watches elsewhere, but a finer musical theatre performance could be harder to find.

Size does matter if you can make a wish

The Government announced £30 billion pound cuts to welfare payments and council funding crippled by these savage cuts continues to leave public services vulnerable and shrivelled, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor...

Meanwhile, as TV saturates us with fly-on-the-wall documentaries gawping at lives of the filthy rich, Alexander Zeldin opted to expose the devastation felt, heard and tasted in the wake of relentless austerity.

In his play, Faith, Hope and Charity, Zeldin’s focus is on one community hall as a banner for community halls up and down the country - life rafts to the poor.

Dingy walls, a leaking roof and lacking in amenities, this set could leave audiences uneasy, their comfy seats contrasting starkly with the desperation presented. Such is the power of theatre, reminding us that

change is needed. Occasionally a character takes a seat amongst the audience, perhaps a potent reminder that this is society’s problem - telling us we all share the responsibility.

Hazel, (Cecelia Noble), the beating heart of the centre, is battle weary. Resourceful and eager to help, Hazel wades in, but on top of her personal issues she lacks the impetus needed to overcome such high hurdles. Noble oozes with a tiredness reserved for those enduring long-term trauma.

An eclectic bunch of characters enter the hall, their connection is that they are all ‘hungry’. Each of them vie for this most basic of needs, pitifully pulling them into each other’s world.

The queueing humbly for food inevitably conjures Victorian era imagery - but this is 2019!

As the cast demonstrate the apologetic nature of the desperate with their endless cries of ‘sorry’

punctuating everything they say, it reveals their internal shame. The audience bears witness to the injustice.

Laughter provides relief from fear, Mason’s (Nick Holder) upbeat nature is like water in a desert, and coupled with his eagerness to help, it’s understandable that those facing threats from social services, housing and any other sector looking to claw back money and resources, manage to unite in their pain. Together they give us a ‘we’re all in it together’ performance and their humanity shines through.

Informed and thought provoking, this is a must see play if you care.

Right now there is no show bigger than ‘Big - The Musical’, a production that is bopping and bouncing and making people feel good, writes Michael Holland...

Big - The Musical shines a light on those times when children want to be grown up and the grown ups all wish they were children once again. Big confirms something that we all know - Men never grow up and will always be big kids.

When little Josh is spurned by the girl of his dreams because she wants an older, more mature boyfriend, every person in the audience related to that situation in their own different way.

After he skulks off in a rebuff huff he chances upon a fairground Make-aWish machine and desperately goes for a last gasp attempt at being more like the older kid who got the girl. Josh wished he was big.

It worked of course, which meant Josh scared the life out of his mum the next morning when he woke up looking exactly like Strictly Come Dancing winner Jay McGuiness, the singer from Wanted. Fortunately, Jay’s impressive CV paid off nicely with all the singing and dancing that had to be done for this role, and he showed that he was very much up for it.

So, with the magical power of theatre the 13-year-old boy now in a man’s body got himself a job testing toys in a failing factory, giving the

owner (Matthew Kelly) the chance to be a big kid again, and the marketing department, in their grey suits, nightmares. But in between checking out the toys this pubescent man-child was checked out by Kimberley Walsh, which they both seemed very happy about. However, while Josh was biding his time, waiting until he could reverse the magic and return home to his family, they fell in love. Oops.

Awkward.

Big, while being a toe-tapping musical in the traditional style, it also has other, more complex layers that add to the experience. This show creates more than just talk about the singing and dancing on the way home, but all the other issues that it encompasses.

They tell me size doesn’t matter but Big is fantastic. Trust me. It is a real crowd-pleaser and McGuiness has truly earnt his star status in this one. This train ride is right on time

David Hare’s The Permanent Way is a play about the privatisation of the railway and its consequences, writes Michael Holland...

It was created by using first-hand accounts taken from interviews carried out by the author and the Out Of Joint ensemble, and has the feel of a public enquiry into everything that was wrong and bad about the privatisation.

Commuters in uniform white macs alternate between rushing for trains and a slow, rush-hour shuffle to the exit, each one takes a turn to say how railways should be run. Then they appear as the individuals who all played a part in the privatisation process: bankers, politicians, ministers, but nobody from the public sphere. In hindsight they could say why it all went wrong but were very willing to take the money and say

nothing at the time.

With so many companies now involved in running the railway it began leaking money, and was shored up with ticket price rises.

Rich shareholders became richer as corners and costs were cut and safety standards fell. Eventually the train crashes began happening: Southall, Ladbroke Grove, Hatfield, Potters Bar, all raising questions about private profit.

We became privy to inquests and enquiries and heard that training had been cut back, so drivers would be working with no knowledge of the safety measures that stop trains going through red lights. A £1.5m fine was handed out to one offending company in the same year that the CEO earned £3m. A widow was offered £7000 for losing her husband.

from the top to the bottom. At times it was more like an NUR conference than entertainment, a battle between corporations and the people, job losses versus loss of loved ones, but fundamentally a plea for renationalisation.

Light relief came from Paul Dodds’ impressions of Richard Branson and John Prescott, but there was too much sadness emanating from the survivors and families of those that died to lighten the mood too much.

The Permanent Way is not meant to make you laugh but make you think.

Since the privatisation of the railways all the nationalised industries have gone the same way. And none for the better, some would say.

This play is perfectly sited in The Vaults. The hard-hitting dialogue is punctuated with ominous booms of thunder from trains rolling in and out of Waterloo Station overhead that echo around the vaulted arches below.

It is not a fun night by any stretch of the imagination, but The Permanent Way is both very important and relevant right now as Corbyn puts renationalisation out there as a major part of Labour’s election manifesto.

On the Sunday morning of October 5, 1937, a crowd of over 100,000 protesters gathered in the streets to blockade a column of Fascists led by Oswald Moseley from marching.

A reported six thousand police officers attempted forcibly to clear a path for the march, but were met with violent resistance from the anti-Fascists who threw missiles and erected barricades. It led to 113 arrests.

The figure of Oswald Moseley, the Fascist leader, may have come to a modern-day audience’s attention more recently after being portrayed by actor Sam Chaflin in series five of the hit BBC series, Peaky Blinders.

But his British Union of Fascists (BUF) – known as the Blackshirts – and the violent clashes between Londoners who stood in their way have a local link many may not be aware of.

For the incident was not the famous Battle of Cable Street, in East London, but a successor march a year later on

the streets of Bermondsey, one which saw even more arrests and people blockading the Blackshirts.

The battle made newspapers around the world. As far away as Melbourne, Australia, newspapers ran reports of the clash between fascists and antifascist demonstrators on the streets.

“Wild scenes marked efforts to impede a march of Fascists in London today,” reported a correspondent for The Argus in Melbourne on Tuesday, October 5, 1937.

“Police, who charged with batons, removed barricades which had been erected to block the marchers. Several person were injured and some arrests were made.”

Taking their cue from the Spanish Civil War, demonstrators shouted ‘Mosley shall not pass’ as the Blackshirts attempted to make their route from Millbank to Bermondsey.

Demonstrators used barrows, fencing and barbed wire in Long Lane in their bid to halt the fascists – surrounded by a red flag.

A first barricade was removed by police, only for a second to be erected further down the road. Two policemen were reported injured.

The Daily Worker, the newspaper of the communist party, claimed that ‘London has not witnessed such bitter street fighting for years’.

However, the earlier incident of Cable Street almost exactly a year prior in 1936, is the one most remembered in the public consciousness.

On October 4, 1936, the workingclasses of East London took to the streets to prevent the march of Moseley’s Blackshirts.

A diverse crowd of Communists, Jewish people, Dockers and trade unionists successfully made sure that they ‘did not pass’ in a show of hastily to fascism and anti-Semitism.

However, the historian, Daniel Tilles, argues that the mere existence of the march against Fascists in Bermondsey undermines the commonly-held idea that Cable Street was a water-shed moment for the defeat of British Fascism.

“None of this is to downplay the courage of the Cable Street protesters or the worthiness of their cause, particularly for the Jewish participants, who had been subject to months of fascist intimidation and abuse in the East End,” stresses

Tilles.

But he warns against drawing what he sees as the wrong lesson from the Battle of Cable Street and subsequently Bermondsey.

He argues that the violent clashes of Cable Street and Bermondsey led to an increase in recruits for the BUF and an intensification of anti-Jewish violence.

“When a movement is already on the political margins and has little support, as was the case with the BUF by 1936, mass displays of opposition unnecessarily gift it public and media attention, creating a platform for its hateful message,” he argues.

The end to Britain’s Fascist movement, and with it, Oswald Moseley’s career, came postBermondsey, in Tilles’ telling.

By late 1937, organisations which had been involved in organisations of meeting Fascism by force changed tactics, says Tilles.

“The growing cohesion and moderation of Britain’s diverse antifascist forces helped to starve the fascists of the conflict they desired and to squeeze the political space available to them,” the historian says.

“While such methods may be far less dramatic and inspiring than the type of street activism represented by the Battle of Cable Street, they offer the true lesson that should today be drawn from the successful struggle against fascism in the 1930s.”

In the BBC show, Moseley is Tommy Shelby’s nemesis, who plans to have him assassinated. But in reallife, Moseley died of natural causes in 1980, most likely connected to his Parkinson’s disease.

The British Union of Fascists was banned in 1940, and Moseley was imprisoned until 1943. He subsequently spent most of his years in exile in France.

Robert Brown was an important part of Fisher's engine room

FISHER CAPTAIN Robert Brown said it was with a “heavy heart” that he had decided to leave the club.

The news is another blow to boss Allan Fenn, who has seen his side win none of their last eight fixtures.

Fisher lost 1-0 to Hollands & Blair in the SCEFL Premier Division last Saturday. The Fish were knocked out in the first round of the London Senior Cup on Tuesday, after a 5-2 defeat at Tooting & Mitcham.

Brown was an integral part of previous manager Dean Harrison’s side as they won promotion and followed it up by finishing third last season.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce that I am leaving Fisher,” Brown said in a post on his Twitter account. “Although we are accustomed to players at non-league level leaving clubs consistently, I always saw myself as a Fisher player and grew so attached to the club.

“I have thought about this decision thoroughly, and it is time for us to part ways. It was an honour leading the

HISTORY WAS made last weekend when Rotherhithe side Ballers FA Youth made their grassroots bow in the A division of the Selkent Youth League against a resistant Dulwich United side.

In their first-ever league fixture, the under-13 Ballers side started confidently and the honour of scoring their first-ever league goal fell to Stanley Sammland. He picked

up a loose ball on the edge of the box before firing home.

Ballers continued to dominate after the break and went 2-0 up when Nahshon Bedeau-Francis converted from inside the box after a powerful run.

The visitors were soon 3-0 up and added a fourth goal when Freddie Doublet managed to squeeze the ball into the net from a tight angle.

Dulwich scored a consolation five minutes from time.

Chris Bourke shrugs off nerves to extend winning record

ONLY TWO overs were bowled on Tuesday as rain disrupted Surrey’s final County Championship Division One fixture against Nottinghamshire at the Kia Oval.

After heavy rain in the morning, the teams eventually resumed play at 3.45pm, but were back in the pavilion soon afterwards when the ground was hit by another downpour.

Surrey had added two runs to their overnight total, a leg-bye and a single to Ollie Pope nudging the home side’s score up to 248-2.

But, with rain giving way to a spell of thunder and lightning, umpires Chris

Watts and Martin Saggers abandoned play for the day at 4.20pm.

There had been a false start earlier in the afternoon, with the players warming up on the outfield, only for bad light and showers to intervene once again.

The match was scheduled to resume on Wednesday at 10.30am, with Pope unbeaten on 79 and Scott Borthwick 109 not out.

But at the time that we were going to press, the weather had taken a bad turn to delay the start again.

STREATHAM’S CHRIS Bourke shrugged off the nerves to extend his perfect professional record with a points’ win over Jose Hernandez at York Hall in Bethnal Green last weekend.

Millwall fan Bourke, 24, moved to 5-0 after handing the 30-yearold Nicaraguan a 26th consecutive defeat.

South London superbantamweight Bourke, a former Team GB fighter, was first on at 4pm on the Sunny Edwards-headlined

show.

“I was a bit worried when they said I was opening because I thought it would be empty when I came out,” Bourke told ringnews24.com.

“I can’t thank my family, friends and supporters enough for getting in there early, it was easily the best atmosphere I have boxed in.

“It might have been the first fight but it was one of the loudest all night, I really can’t thank everyone enough.

“In the end I loved being on first because I did the business, had a great atmosphere and then was able to sit and enjoy the rest of the show.”

GAVIN ROSE was pleased with how Dulwich Hamlet applied themselves in their FA Cup second qualifying round win against Bognor Regis last weekend.

The Hamlet ran out impressive 6-1 winners at Champion Hill, aided by a brace apiece for Danny Mills and Nyren Clunis.

Dulwich steamed 2-0 ahead with goals from Quade Taylor and Clunis in the second and eighth minutes, a start Rose was pleased with.

“In terms of the first fifteen, twenty I was happy,” Rose said. “We were very aggressive, won the ball back and it led to us scoring two goals.”

Dulwich controlled the first half against the Isthmian League Premier Division side as they took that advantage into the half-time break.

They scored four more and Rose attributed the rout to a more complete attacking display after the second period.

He said: “In the second half I thought we were better on the ball, won the ball higher up the pitch and were more of a goal threat.

“There’s been games this season where I thought we could’ve scored more goals and I knew at one point we would. It came [Saturday].”

It was Hamlet’s first win in six games, ending a poor run which has frustrated the manager. “I’ve been a little concerned at how we’re letting teams get back into games.

Saturday saw ten summer additions feature, and Rose is confident time will help his new look squad forge a positive mentality.

“I’ve been a bit disappointed with our mental approach,” Rose continued.

“It’s a new group and that means new mindsets. We’re here to set a culture in the dressing room, so we’ll get stronger and hopefully learn from our mistakes.”

Rose praised top goal scorer Mills, who has now netted four times in three games. Rose, however, still thinks there’s more to come from his striker.

“His all-round game can still improve,” he explained. “With his back to goal, he could draw fouls a little bit more.

“He’s been at successful teams and at times ended up working really hard for the team, sometimes not getting himself the opportunities to score

THE2018-19 campaign finished with Southwark RFC sitting in their highest ever position of third and pondering how improvements could be made to edge into the promotion places this season.

Preparations were somewhat hampered by head coach Joe Brace leaving the club before pre-season had started, but Jonny Adams filled the void admirably and had put the squad through a gruelling preseason in time for the curtain raiser.

Southwark were able to field an experienced team for the first game of the season against New Ash Green, with new Captain Sam Lamont wearing the armband with a settled and familiar squad around him.

From the first whistle, Southwark displayed pace in the back-line and industry from the forwards which New Ash Green found too much to cope with.

Aaron Redgrave displayed poise early on to register the first points of the afternoon after an early infringement and from then on the scoreboard ticked over regularly with tries from Hugh Nicholson, James Hughes (2) and Marcus Bedson pushing the score out to 36-0 to the visitors at half-time.

With the match all but ended as a contest the south

Londoners failed to build on the first-half performance and took their foot off the gas.

Credit to New Ash Green who came back strongly and never gave up, spending the majority of the half camped in the visitors 22.

Breakaway scores from Tristan Demuth and Michael Wilkinson put a bit of gloss on the score-line but a full 80-minute performance will be needed to secure victory against stronger league opposition.

New players are always welcome at the club. Training takes place at Cobourg Road (Burgess Park) on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 7pn and 8.30pm.

Rye fall to deafeat

THE RYE were away last weekend and suffered their first defeat of the season.

With injuries mounting up boss Danny Gibson brought Micheal Newton into the middle of the park and Emanuel Lawal started up front.

The game started with the Rye in control but failing to create any clear-cut chances. And just before the break they fell a goal behind after a scramble in the box.

Andre mason and Trevel Nicholson came on at the break as the visitors chased an equaliser.

But it was the hosts who doubled their lead when after a long ball over the top of the Rye defence

followed by poor communication, goalkeeper Jim Holman’s clearance ended up in his own net.

The Rye had a mountain to climb and as they pushed forward it allowed space for Chimaria to exploit, which they did to go three goals clear.

The Rye were camped in the opposition half but were struggling to break the defensive lines. With 20 minutes to go the Rye were awarded a penalty which Duke Binitie tucked home to make it 3-1.

Gibson said: “The side had a lot of possession but lacked the basics, which has to improve going forward.”

It’s unlikely Hamlet supporters will

see Allassani in action again this season, but Rose hasn’t ruled out a return in the future.

“Apparently with the amount of time it will take for the operation and healing, I don’t think he’ll be back this season. Stanger things have happened.

“He may well be out of contract at Coventry at the end of the season.

Reise is one of those people we’d always have, because we know he’ll be an asset to the club.”

ABOUT FOUR minutes into his post-match press conference, Neil Harris had enough and got up and left just as another question was heading his way.

He hadn’t been exactly subjected to a grilling, a where-has-it-all-gonewrong inquest.

But there was a sense that, after so much early-season optimism has evaporated, Harris is struggling for answers.

After a summer in which change was promised and backed up, Millwall are finding it harder to back it up on the pitch.

They have now won just twice in eight league games this season and Harris is certainly revealing some tension. The weekend before he sat in the technical area staring at the empty pitch after the 2-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers.

It’s as if he thought it would all come together with a refreshed squad but instead the Lions have lost a little bit of their identity. Harris said he would make more changes to his starting XIs this season, but his sides were always at their best when he picked settled teams.

Perhaps Harris has been stung by the “one-dimensional” labels that have been levelled at him and he wants to show that he is more tactically flexible.

But it was a surprise to see Millwall line up in a 3-5-2 formation last Saturday. In fairness, one of those players brought in to facilitate the

switch in shape was Shaun Hutchinson, who scored his side’s equaliser in the second half.

But Millwall, especially at The Den, have been a side over the last few seasons that says, “we don’t change for anyone”.

That was particularly the case in their first season back in the Championship, the unfashionable upstarts with the unfashionable style who were going to ruffle the feathers of the big boys.

Millwall played 4-4-2, with Lee Gregory and Steve Morison up front, and defeated Norwich, Leeds and a highly-rated Reading side at home before the end of September.

You could see most opposition sides hated it.

Gregory and Morison shipped criticism, particularly around their goal-scoring records, but you don’t really miss something until it’s gone.

Those two up front were a marriage made in heaven for Millwall and a marriage made in hell for most sides coming to south Bermondsey.

Millwall have a new attack this season but only one goal from open play in eight Championship games.

They haven’t scored more than one goal in fifteen straight league fixtures.

There isn’t a whole lot of creativity and when Millwall have the ball it all feels a bit off-the-cuff, the hope that individual players will produce a moment of magic, rather than chances coming from cohesive team play.

players and crossed, but none of his team-mates had anticipated it.

Nahki Wells gave QPR the lead in the 56th minute, after Millwall’s best spell of the game. The hosts were caught on the counter-attack and Wells fired across Bart Bialkowski in front of the away end.

Millwall responded well and you could never question their spirit.

Hutchinson, starting for the first time in the league since last March, was in the right place to fire home from Shane Ferguson’s corner.

But less than a minute later Bialkowski had another moment at The Den he’ll want to forget. There was little pressure on him when he came out of his box and tried to pass to Jake Cooper, but he mis-kicked and Wells nipped in before rolling the ball into an empty net.

Harris refused to criticise his goalkeeper afterwards despite a second mistake in two home games.

"I feel for Bart,” Harris said, “he's

a good lad, a good pro, a good goalkeeper, but that's football, isn't it?”

Harris sent on Aiden O’Brien, Connor Mahoney and Tom Bradshaw to try to rescue something from the game. Bradshaw made an immediate impact, shooting across goal but the Hoops cleared for a corner.

Wallacehadthebestchancetoequalise when he ran through after Bradshaw’s clever movement had taken defenders away, but the midfielder shot wide.

Otherwise Hoops goalkeeper Joe Lumley had little to worry about.

"Maybe I have to look at myself for a little bit more consistency,” Harris said. “I've never been a manager that tinkers with a team.

"I decided to because I thought the players deserved the opportunity. But if the players aren't going to perform, then they don't deserve the opportunity to play."

It’s set to be a soul-searching week at Millwall, with a lot of questions to be answered.

SHAUN HUTCHINSON feels there is a lack of “belief and confidence” around the Millwall squad – but is confident “the goals will come” as the side look to end a run of six games without a win.

The Lions are aiming for a first victory since the third game of the season when they face Huddersfield this Saturday.

Like the team, Hutchinson admits he has had a “frustrating” beginning to the season. He started in the league for the first time since March 2 and scored against QPR in the Lions’ 2-1 defeat last weekend.

The former Fulham centre-back had injury and illness problems last season, which gave Alex Pearce the chance to nail down a regular spot following his loan switch from Derby.

With his performance and goal last weekend, Hutchinson has given Neil Harris a tough defensive decision to make this weekend, particularly if the Millwall boss reverts to a four-man defence.

“It’s been a frustrating start for me because I felt like I came back pre-season raring to go,” Hutchinson told the News this week. “I had a good pre-season but I had to be patient. It is a positive to get back into the team. It was nice to score but obviously you’d prefer to win and not to score.

“I like to think I’m realistic at times.

I understand the situation, I stood back and looked at it. Yes, it’s frustrating but you’ve got to believe that you’re good enough. You want to be playing and believe you should be playing.

“At the same time, I came out of the team

last season and the lads weren’t doing a lot wrong. The gaffer explained that to me and I kind of knew where I stood. All I could do was work hard through preseason. I played in a few under-23 games to make sure I was as fit as possible so when I was called upon I was ready.”

Hutchinson has no problem dropping down to Kevin Nugent’s side, and remembers his disappointment at the start of his professional career at Motherwell when he felt senior players didn’t give their all for reserve sides.

Hutchinson continued: “We don’t do it very often at Millwall but it’s a position that suits me quite well, with my attributes I can play there. When the gaffer mentioned it I was looking forward to it, I was excited to play the game.

“I don’t think the way the game went was anything to do with the formation.

“You’ve got to believe that you’re good enough. You want to be playing and believe you should be playing.”

“For a lot of people it would be [difficult to get motivated for under-23 games] but not for me,” Hutchinson said. “I remember when I was a young boy we played reserve football and they were the biggest games ever for me and meant the world to me.

“When a first-team player came down and didn’t quite apply himself I used to go home frustrated and annoyed. I felt he was hampering my development a little bit.

“So when I go in there I do everything to play as best as I can in that situation.

Yeah okay there’s not 15,000 people there watching so you don’t have the same edge to your game. At the same time you’ve got to apply yourself in the right way and give encouragement when you can to help these boys develop.

“I feel like I couldn’t have been in a better place to start the game.”

Hutchinson started on the right side of a three-man defence against the Hoops,

better. But unfortunately when there’s a lack of confidence and belief in the team, which I think there is at the moment, sometimes we play the safe option and the safe option is to hook it away rather than taking a touch and relaxing on the ball.

“That’s the way it went. The chances between the sides were even, we tested them with a lot of balls into the box.”

Millwall have scored just once from open play in their last nine league games.

Hutchinson acknowledges set-pieces are their main route to goal, but feels the Lions need to be more patient in open play to get into the best positions to deliver balls into the box.

“We are a handful from set-plays and the majority of our goals will be scored from there,” he added. “To be honest, we do play a lot for set-plays. We’re the land of the giants when all our big ‘uns are on the pitch.

“A lot of teams look at that and see it as a main strength of ours. Everyone’s

grabbing and pulling shirts, that’s what they’re going to do.

“There’s a lack of belief and confidence at the moment that the whole squad can create and get goals, whether it be from open play and just being patient at times.

“I think sometimes there’s a massive rush: ‘we’ve got to score, we’ve got to score...’ We’ve got players who’ve all got talent that suits the Millwall way and can score goals.

“If we keep putting balls into the box like we did against QPR – I had a look and it was 33 – big Matt Smith is going to score plenty of goals. I thought they defended him well at the weekend, fair play to them, not many defenders will do that. But if you’ve got a big man in the box you have to get balls in there, there’s

no point playing tippy-tappy through the middle. We need to get the ball wide and get it in the box.

“The goals will come, we just need to stay positive and not worry about too much. The strikers all have different talents and attributes. The way we play depends on who we have on the pitch at the time, who the gaffer feels is right for that game.

We’ve got goals from midfield, Jed [Wallace] can get goals, Thommo [Ben Thompson] showed his ability last season. Willo [Shaun Williams] can get a couple of long-rangers.

There are goals in the team, it’s maybe just the build-up we need to work on and then take our chances when they come.”

JED WALLACE has urged those concerned with Millwall’s start to the season to “take a deep breath” – and insisted it’s not in his character to be “moaning” around the training ground.

The Lions’ 2-1 home defeat against QPR last Saturday was a fifth Championship game without a win, ahead of successive away fixtures against Huddersfield and Luton.

Wallace admits there is a feeling of disappointment with Millwall sitting sixteenth in the table with nine points from eight games.

Wallace, though, is putting things in perspective.

“It’s a little bit doom and gloom.

Even the lads feel a little bit disappointed,” Wallace said. “I’m an upbeat character and the last time I checked we ain’t bottom of the league and no one gets relegated in September.

“Everyone needs to take a deep breath. It could be a lot worse.

We could be Stoke, we could be Huddersfield, these teams that are trying to get their first win.

“We have two games now that, if we want to have a good season, they’re two winnable fixtures. We need to look at them that way, not show teams too much respect. We have a good team and good players.

“We need to show some balls and

try to get results. Our away form over the last two years has not been good enough. We’ve got two away games now, and why can’t we win back-toback games away from home?”

Millwall travel to the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday to face a side that has lost eight of their nine league games this season, and 28 of their last 33 including in the Premier League.

Wallace experienced a difficult run after he made his first-team debut for Portsmouth. His first eight senior games in professional football ended in defeats. It was lucky thirteen before he tasted victory for the first time, Portsmouth’s first win in 23 games.

He explained why that winless streak with Pompey didn’t affect him.

“When I first broke into the team at Portsmouth we didn’t win for 22 games,” Wallace said. “To be completely bluntly honest, I didn’t care. I was eighteen years old and playing every week.

“I remember we beat Crewe away.

We’d just been through administration, used about 60 different players in one season. The club was a shambles. We beat Crewe away after six months of not winning a game and it was as if we’d been promoted.

“I was so naïve, I was happy. Six months before that I was playing nonleague football. Then it was, ‘wow, I’m playing in front of 20,000 fans’.

“The thing is now, I’m sure the fans can see by the way I play, and we’ve got a passionate manager, it upsets you the next day when you haven’t won.

“But there’s nothing you can do.

What’s the point? There’s no point me walking around the training ground moaning about this or that. That’s not my character.

“I’m a great believer that it’s done.

Review it, learn from it and move on.

I watch the majority of games back to see what I can improve on. Where can I get the ball, where can I be effective.

“Everyone here takes their football very seriously. We’re a tight-knit group as everyone knows. It’s certainly not because of a lack of effort or endeavour that we’re struggling at the moment. It’s just about cutting out silly goals.

“We should be looking at these two games now, rolling our sleeves up as a Millwall team, rolling up there and thinking why can’t we win both?”

Wallace played in a central attacking midfield role last Saturday, and had a chance to make it 2-2 when he ran through QPR’s defence but shot just wide.

“I enjoy that position, I want to be involved as much as I can,” Wallace said. “I feel I can score goals and I can really hurt teams in behind. It’s a position I’ve played in a lot, at Portsmouth and Wolves under Kenny [Jackett] and I think ultimately I would have played there more if he could have got me in the team.

“It’s a role that I’ve been asking the manager to play me in for a while, but we’ve had so much success playing 4-4-2, so I understand.

“If we win the next three games and I play left-back, I’m happy with

that. The team always come first. But ultimately if I’m playing well I know I can help the team and I can do damage from that position.”

Many of Millwall’s squad are users of social media, particularly the younger players. Wallace often responds to fans on Twitter, and isn’t afraid to face criticism head on.

“If you’ve only got Twitter to feed your ego then that’s up to you,” Wallace continued. “I’ll have a conversation with any Millwall fan wherever I am. If I’m out with my family and someone wants to have a chat, no problem.

“I’m a passionate person and I care about my football. I know when I’ve played well and when I haven’t. I give 120 per cent every week. I walk off the pitch and I’m knackered, I couldn’t give any more every game.

“Of course I’m going to make mistakes. The frustration of the fans is understandable. They want to do well, I want to do well. I think social media is a good platform because it gives people a chance to interact.

“I don’t think it’s something you can only go on when you’ve scored a goal.

You’ve got to use it both ways.”

Wallace believes Millwall’s players have yet to hit top form. Bart Bialkowski has been one of the more impressive performers this season, but his error handed QPR their second goal and ultimately the three points.

“Bart made a mistake last weekend but he’s going to win us a lot more points than he’ll lose us,” Wallace added. “I see him in training every day,

he’s a great lad, a brilliant goalkeeper.

Over the last six, seven years he’s been outstanding at this level.

“When we played Ipswich, and drew 2-2, he was like Spiderman in goal. He’s an international footballer and knows what it takes at this level.

“I don’t really feel like anyone’s really got going. And this is my point about it feeling doom and gloom. No one’s really at the top of their game and we’ve had a bang-average start.

“But if we get four points from the next two games then we’ve had a decent start, that’s how quickly it can change.”

Millwall will hope to add to Huddersfield’s misery on Saturday.

Danny Cowley has two defeats in two games since he took over as manager, but Wallace knows they have talent in their squad.

“They’ve got a lot of good players there. The majority of the squad that got promoted is still there.

“They’ve a lot of good players but so have we. At times I don’t think we give ourselves enough credit. The manager has recruited well and we’ve got players who can hurt teams at this level.

“Ultimately it’s down to individuals to find form and put the ball in the back of the net. We’ve got a lot of players who can score goals in this division and have in their careers.

“Defensively we’re always organised, the gaffer always sets us up really well, so if we can nick a few more goals, especially on the road, I think we’ll be alright.”

IF MILLWALL think they’re in a difficult spell, they should have a look at the reds stacking up in the ‘L’ column of this Saturday’s opponents.

Huddersfield Town’s 4-2 defeat at West Brom last Sunday was their 28th in their last 33 league games.

They’ve won once in that time. In the last fourteen months, they’ve beaten two sides in league football: Wolves, twice, and Fulham. They haven’t kept a clean sheet since February, nineteen games ago.

Millwall haven’t won in five league games but had winless sequences last season of seven, five, eight and seven games. When pressure is building and criticism of their performances is intense, Neil Harris’ side find a way to win. They have that stubbornness.

Predicting the Millwall side this Saturday is difficult. Do they really go for a vulnerable Huddersfield team, stick two up front with out-andout wingers with the artillery pointed at the Terriers’ penalty area from out wide?

Or go more conservative, bring back Shaun Williams and Ryan Leonard to give the midfield more defensive steel with Ben Thompson scampering forward to support a lone striker?

Those are some of the questions facing Harris, but new Huddersfield

boss Danny Cowley has even more difficult puzzles to solve, chief among them how to get his side out of that losing habit.

Cowley is used to looking for answers. While he was manager of non-league Concord Rangers and Braintree Town he was also a secondary school physical education teacher. Coincidentally, he taught Harris’ children at FitzWimarc School in Rayleigh, Essex.

At one stage Harris was the bookies’ favourite for the Huddersfield job, though there was thought to be little substance in that.

Huddersfield supporters heard a worrying admission after their side blew a 2-1 lead with 20 minutes left at The Hawthorns.

“We have to remind everyone how to win football matches, we have to make sure we make wins happen,” Cowley said.

“When you don’t do that, you’re negative in possession and the opposition get sustained pressure.

“At the moment we're maybe a team who has forgotten how to win and how to manage the game in that moment, and that's something we've got to keep working towards.”

Cowley and his brother Nicky, his assistant manager, won promotion with Concord and Lincoln, the latter who in 2018 became the first nonleague side to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in over a century before

they lost 5-0 to Arsenal.

It’s the meeting of the Championship’s newest boss and the longest-serving one on Saturday.

Harris has tinkered with his side and formation this season but it feels like he has to settle on both. Stability is needed after the waters became a little choppier recently with three defeats and two draws in five Championship games.

Harris enjoyed his 100th win as Millwall manager on the opening day against Preston and the 103rd would be welcome after that difficult spell.

Players who started the season well, such as Connor Mahoney and Aiden O’Brien, have dropped off and have been left out of the side.

Den diary Millwall youngsters defeated in Colchester MILLWALL’S UNDER-23S were defeated 3-1 by Colchester United last Monday.

The Lions went in front through an own goal, but the hosts hit back with efforts from Dean Ager, Matt Weaire and Louis Dunne to secure the Professional Development League points.

Millwall went in front in the twelfth minute when Tyler Burey and George Alexander combined to set up Reuben Duncan and his shot went in off a U’s defender.

Colchester levelled through Ager just before the break and took the lead just after the hour Weaire beat Ryan Sandford from close range.

They wrapped up the win through Dunne’s penalty.

MILLWALL FOOTBALL Club are mourning the death of Reg Davies this week.

MILLWALL HAVE been given an allocation of 1,630 tickets for the London derby against Brentford at Griffin Park on Saturday, October 19.

DAVID FORDE will be back at The Den for Millwall’s clash with Cardiff City on Tuesday, October 22.

The former Lions goalkeeper was born in Tipton, West Midlands, on October 10, 1933.

Davies earned the nickname ‘The Cat’ for his displays at The old Den after joining from Walsall in May 1958.

Davies played 218 games in five seasons in all competitions and won a Fourth Division championship medal in 1962.

Davies was in the Lions side that defeated Charlton Athletic 3-0 in the Kent FA Challenge Cup final a year later.

He had two spells with Leyton Orient and one with Port Vale after leaving Millwall. Davies also worked at Jersey Airport and completed his national service with Royal Artillery.

Tickets are on sale to priority points holders until Wednesday, October 2. Seating tickets are priced at £25.50 adults, £18.50 over-65s, £16.50 under-25s and £6 under-18s.

Terrace tickets are priced at £23 adults, £17 over-65s, £15 under25s and £6 under-18s.

Millwall have said that a coach will run only with sufficient numbers. Tickets for travel are £17.

The Lions lost 2-0 at Brentford last season. It is Millwall’s second London derby of the season after last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers.

Forde played for both sides in a twelve-year spell in English football before his retirement in the summer after he left Cambridge United.

Forde, 39, made 339 appearances for the Lions between 2008 and 2017 when he left to join Cambridge after a loan spell at Portsmouth.

The former Republic of Ireland international will be part of Millwall’s ‘VIP Matchday Experience’ at The Den. JED WALLACE says Millwall fans have the right to express their frustration with the players – but the midfielder insists the squad’s character cannot be questioned.

Home supporters at The Den booed when the final whistle blew on the 2-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers last Saturday, a fifth league game without a win which has seen the Lions drop to sixteenth in the table.

That’s after a bright opening to the campaign when Neil Harris’ side took seven points from their first three games to raise expectations after a difficult battle against relegation in 2018-19.

Millwall have three more games before the next international break – away trips to Huddersfield and Luton followed by a home clash against Leeds – which could either lift or deepen the air of gloom currently around the side.

Wallace knows that the team haven’t been playing scintillating football, but stressed they have to get back to playing to their strengths.

“It doesn’t hurt because I understand, the punters pay their money,” Wallace said. “I’m a football fan myself. If I stopped playing football tomorrow I’d be going to games. I’d be supporting a team.

“I understand they’re frustrated and that’s because they care. But I

think the fans know the players care as well.

“There have probably been Millwall teams over the years that have had their character questioned by people, but I certainly don’t feel like we’re one of those teams. The lads are pushing in the right direction and it’s just about cutting out silly mistakes, people finding that bit of form that they haven’t found yet.

“I have no doubt that we’re going to have an alright season.”

Harris appears to still be settling on his first-choice starting XI after recruiting eight players in the close season.

“It was a transitional summer,” Wallace continued. “Because we had a very good start, we took seven points from the first three games, everyone got a bit excited.

But you’re not just going to turn up every week and win.

“I know it’s frustrating for the fans.

I know we’re not a great watch at times, recently we’ve not been playing open, expansive football and scoring as many goals as we should. But we’ve had great success over the last four years at times and we’ve never really done that. We’ve got to play to our strengths.

“I always reference Burnley in the Premier League. They’re not going to play expansive football and play out from the back, because that’s not what suits them.

“We have a hardworking group, we look to get clean sheets and hurt people going the other way. If we cut out a couple of silly errors here and there then we’ll be good.”

Hutchinson was handed his first league start of the season against QPR last Saturday, and scored the Lions’ equaliser in their 2-1 defeat.

Hutchinson hopes he has taken his chance after his first goal since last February. He says he is “hungry” to get back into the side on a regular basis.

“I know that, the gaffer knows that, I’m honest with him. No player wants to sit on the bench. If I’m on the bench I’m gutted and frustrated but at the same time I’m not going to not apply myself.

“I want to be here, I want to play for the gaffer. You’ve got to respect your contract, you’ve got to respect that the gaffer has chosen not to play you in a particular game because there are other players he thinks can get a result.

“That’s just the way it is and I understand that and respect that. I support everything the gaffer does.

I believe that if I apply myself right then I will get in the team.

“I’m not looking to be elsewhere, no way. I’m hungry to get into that team rather than thinking that about going elsewhere.”
