Harriet placed as second favourite for speaker role

THE FAMILY of the late Charles Cherrill have shared their thanks for the tributes and support shown after the veteran local politician’s death.

Tom White, a trustee of Southwark Pensioners’ Action Group, told the News: “Charlie was an absolute legend. I joined Southwark pensioners twenty years ago, and served with him on the older persons partnership board. I was lucky to learn so much from him.

“He was a brilliant chair, always fair and firm.

He was on many committees, and not just older people. He was also a school governor – so he helped people from five to 95.”

Mr White said he – like many – would miss bumping into Charlie on Walworth and Albany Roads, and said he would be sorely missed across Southwark.

Charlie Cherrill was born in Walworth’s Chatham Street in December 1928; the third of four children. He never strayed far from the borough he called home.

His son Matthew told the News: “At the age of fourteen he followed his grandfather and father into “the print”.

“He wanted to be an actor and later had the chance to go to drama school but never went because his parents refused to give their consent as “acting wasn’t a proper job”.”

The young Charlie completed his National Service in the Royal Engineers: Parachute Regiment and then Bomb Disposal “for an extra shilling a week” before returning to Fleet Street where he worked in the Daily Mail’s machine room.

During this time Charlie became involved with the trade union movement, becoming Branch Secretary of the London Machine Branch of Sogat ‘82.

A member of the Labour Party, he was involved with the Inner London Education Authority, South East Regional TUC and became a JP. Charlie married Josephine Tiley in 1954,

HARRIET HARMAN has come in second favourite to replace John Bercow as Speaker.

whom he met while volunteering at the Wellington College Mission. They had three children.

By the mid-1980s, technology was changing the way newspapers were produced and as the nationals left their spiritual home.

Charlie retired but he didn’t turn his back on those printers he had represented for so many years, becoming a Trustee of the GPM Charitable Trust, an independent charity which exists to give support to workers and their families in the Printing, Graphical, Papermaking and Media industries.

He was elected to Southwark Council in 1990 and in 1993 became deputy Mayor but lost his seat in the 1994 borough elections. Re-elected in 1998 he resumed his role as deputy and became Mayor in May 1999.

The following twelve months saw Charlie become Southwark’s “Millennium Mayor” representing the borough at the official opening of the Millennium Bridge, Tate Modern and the start of the Millennium celebration at Southwark Cathedral. He was honoured with the Freedom of the City of London in March 2000.

Although he stood down as a councillor in 2002, Charlie continued working with the Mayor’s office, representing Southwark for a further sixteen years. He was a school governor throughout Southwark, and Chair of the Southwark Young Pilgrims.

Charlie carried on working well into his 91st year. He represented his fellow pensioners with the Southwark Pensioners’ Forum. Throughout his “retirement” he and wife Josie travelled the world.

“My Dad loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren and the occasional nice glass of whiskey,” said Matthew.

“Christmas with his family was very special for him although, for many years, he went missing when Father Christmas turned up!”

Charlie is survived by his wife Josie, three children Lynn, Anne and Matthew and six grandchildren, Robin, Daniel, Rachel, Sarah, Luke and May, and his elder sister Florence.

A private funeral will be followed by a memorial service, with the date and venue to be announced.

Both Ladbrokes and Betway say their odds-on favourite is Labour's Chorley MP, Lindsay Hoyle, currently Deputy Speaker.

Ladbrokes say Harriet has a 5/1 chance, while Betway have given her 5/2.

Figures to publicly support Harman's bid include Tottenham MP and former minister, David Lammy, who said: "If you want a Speaker that won’t be cowered by the establishment, will stand up for democracy, continue John Bercow's work to include and champion minorities and equality and reform of the Commons, it’s got to be Harriet Harman in my view."

Yvette Cooper is also backing Harman, saying she has a “long record of supporting Parliamentary staff and new MPs of all parties” going to say: “At a tough and turbulent time for Parliament, we need calm, kindness and experience.”

GENTOO MAN OR WOMAN?

A PENGUIN at a South Bank aquarium being raised by samesex parents will be its first to be genderless.

The adopted Gentoo chick will reportedly become the world’s first not to have its gender assigned by staff at the aquarium – meaning it won’t be characterised as male or female.

Staff at the South Bank tourist attraction said it was ‘more natural’ for the chick to mature into an adult without a gender, saying it was more normal in the wild.

“While the decision may ruffle a few feathers, gender neutrality in humans has only recently become a widespread topic of conversation, however, it is completely natural for penguins to develop genderless identities as they grow into mature adults,” said Graham McGrath, General Manager at the aquarium.

The baby penguin is being raised by same-sex penguin couple, Rocky and Marama, who took the little creature under their wing after its egg was moved from its stressed birth mother.

It has since fledged its nest and moulted its feathers to become another penguin in the colony.

Alleycat learns to walk again

MOOMIN, AN eleven-monthold cat, who was abandoned after she lost the ability to walk, is looking for a home.

“What makes us really proud at the aquarium is the success of SEA LIFE London's Gentoo breeding programme and the amazing job of same sex penguins Rocky and Marama who took the chick under their wing and raised it as their own,” added Mr McGrath.

The species have ‘near-threatened’ status in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species meaning the birds at SEA LIFE London play a critical marine conservation role.

As the adopted chick matures it may become part of the conservation breeding program, depending on the gender its biology determines, said the aquarium.

Camberwell pupil’s creations make the catwalk

SACRED HEART student, Silvy Fernandes, 17, became one of the youngest designers to ever showcase a creation at London Fashion Week as her oceaninspired asymmetric dress took to the catwalk on Friday.

Twenty young designers aged fifteen to nineteen displayed their final pieces, all themed around sustainability and the natural world as part of Fashion Futures, a charity programme aimed at getting young people into fashion careers and encouraging diversity in the industry.

Moomin was found unable to use her back legs in a Lambeth alleyway, but luckily, she was picked up by locals and taken to Battersea Cat & Dogs Home.

There, she was fortunate enough to have surgery, treatment and exercises for a disease that can severely affect an animal’s mobility and bones, Metaphyseal Osteopathy.

Treatment is essential to guarantee a good quality of life, and animals with this condition may face medical issues again further down the line.

“Moomin has really come a long way since she first arrived at Battersea. It was heartbreaking to see such a young cat struggling to walk and clearly in pain”, says Rachel Saunders, Battersea’s Cattery Manager.

“After a wobbly start to life, lucky Moomin has now found her feet and we hope it won’t be long until she also finds a new home.”

Moomin isn’t the only cat at Battersea currently hoping to be adopted. Cats including the distinguished tuxedo cat Prince Benjamin, six-month-old bundle of fun Elsie, and mother and daughter pair Olive and Snow White the British Shorthairs, are all waiting for their ideal owners to come along.

Foodie heaven at London Bridge

A FREE foodie pop-event will take place outside London Bridge station on Friday to celebrate some of the capital’s top restaurants.

The London Bridge Open Kitchen with food pop-ups, stalls and live music, will take place from 12-noon til late in a bid to sample flavours from across the world offered by local restaurants in Guy’s Courtyard.

Science Gallery London, will feature food from local joints such as BOB’s Lobster, Santo Remedio and Temakinho.

Dishes will be available from £5, said Team London Bridge, which is organising the event.

The Science Gallery itself will also be open late for customers of the Open Kitchen, to showcase its latest exhibition.

Grieving mum begs for veil of silence to end four years after son’s killing

THE GRIEVING mother of a fatally stabbed teen has urged those who know who killed him to come forward four years after his tragic death.

Nobody has ever been convicted for stabbing sixteen-year-old Mohamed Dura-Ray to death, in Walworth’s Newington Estate on September 14, 2015 - despite a £20,000 police reward for information, and a sample of blood found on a letter at the scene which allegedly matched the DNA of a suspect.

The case eventually went cold after a key witness refused to give evidence.

Now four years on from the senseless killing of the keen Man United fan, his mother Mariama Kamara, has once again appealed for the veil of silence protecting those who killed him to be broken.

“Anybody who was there that night needs to come forward,” she said, speaking to the News prior to the four year anniversary of Mo’s death on September 14.

“Being silent doesn’t help, it just makes more problems. We have to tell the truth. If you saw something, you need to say it.

“To help the police. To help the prosecution. To help me.”

Walworth estate car park replaced by 26 council homes

A CAR park on Walworth's Salisbury Estate will be turned into a new block with 26 council homes after being given planning permission this month.

The five-storey block on the Rodney Road estate will include three, two and one-bed flats, with at least half earmarked for tenants on surrounding estates who will be given first refusal.

Councillor Leo Pollak, the cabinet member responsible for new homes at Southwark Council, said he was "especially proud" of the development and its high quality design.

Last year, Mariama stood at the spot where Mo was fatally stabbed in the chest on Walworth’s Canterbury Place to lay flowers for her beloved son, and to make a speech asking those shielding his killer or killers to bring them to justice.

“We’re still grieving as a family,” said Mariama. “But nobody has come forward between last year and this year.”

An inquest into popular Mo’s death heard that he had been involved in an altercation with an ‘unknown male’, and had told witnesses ‘I’ve been stabbed’ as friends tried to help him before police and the ambulance service arrived.

Despite the best efforts of medics, Mo died from a single stab wound to the chest at 10.52pm that night. The coroner returned a verdict of unlawful killing.

Mariama also spoke of her frustration at police cuts, calling for officers ‘on every street corner’ to tackle violent crime. “We need more police to come out [on the streets],” she said. “They have to put more police people in the street, on every corner, in uniform and nonuniform to tackle crime.”

ALL THE best places to eat healthy grub are now featured on an interactive ‘What Walworth Eats’ map to encourage London university students to support local traders.

The map highlights the diverse range of cuisines from all over the world found within a stone’s throw of Elephant and Castle and Walworth Road.

Designed by the London College of Communication with support from Southwark Council, it is hoped the map will help encourage university students to venture out to new places, and help increase footfall for independent businesses and local traders.

Student photographers helped create the map with high quality images, and digital assistants helped list the businesses on google and provide support with increasing their visibility in online searches.

One arrest after Tesco store robbery in SE16

A MAN has been arrested after a Tesco store in Surrey Quays was robbed with a suspected shotgun last week.

Tesco said that it was supporting one of its staff through medical treatment after they were injured during the armed robbery on the Marine Wharf store on Thursday. September 12.

A man is thought to have demanded cigarettes and cash shortly before 7am before making off with an unknown quantity of cash.

“Deployed to the Rotherhithe area yesterday after reports of an armed robbery at a Tesco store,” said the Met’s firearm command on social media.

“The suspect, believed to be in possession of a shotgun, attacked the store security guard with a knife whilst making off. #SCO19 located & arrested the male at a nearby address.”

No one was injured ‘seriously’ in the incident, Scotland Yard said last week, and no shots were fired.

A Tesco spokesman told the News on the day of the robbery: “A serious incident has taken place this morning at our Marine Wharf Express store which has resulted in an injury to one of our colleagues.

“We are currently supporting our colleague as they receive medical treatment.

“The store has been temporarily closed while the police carry out their investigation.”

The supermarket was closed for a day, but has since re-opened for business as normal.

Maudsley slammed over fears ‘false evidence’ was given on patient’s death

THREE TEMPORARY staff working at the South London and Maudsley Trust (SLaM) may have provided ‘false evidence’ over a man who died of a heroin overdose in their care, a coroner has said.

A rare 'prevention of future deaths' report has been issued by a senior coroner to the body which employed the trio, following the death of Alex Blake while a sectioned in-patient at Lambeth Hospital.

Inadequate observations were made on the day of the 36-year-old’s death from a heroin overdose on June 24 last year, a jury found earlier this year.

Serious concerns with evidence given in court by the three employees responsible for the observations means “there is still a risk that future deaths will occur unless action is taken with respect to these individuals,” said senior coroner Andrew Harris in the damning report.

It is not known from where or when Mr Blake, who suffered from a history of mental illness and drug abuse, obtained the heroin.

Among concerns raised were a journal entry at 5.59am by ‘RMN E’ who claimed Mr Blake was still breathing regularly – but he was already dead at the time of the entry, said the Coroner.

Another, RMN T, gave evidence that Mr Blake had been wearing pyjamas when observed at 5am, but Mr Blake had been found dead topless.

Questions were also raised over the testimony given by a third witness, HCA K, who noted Mr Blake as asleep at 3am but told the court he also assumed Mr Blake had been watching a film on his lit-up phone.

“The evidence of these three witnesses cannot be said to be reliable,” added Mr Harris.

“The evidence of the two nurses would seem to go beyond that of poorly conducted observations.

“It would be reasonable to suspect that either the two nurses did not perform the observations at all, or that they have provided false evidence to the Trust and to the court.”

NHS Professionals, the largest NHS staff bank in the country, must now outline changes it has made to training and recruitment by Wednesday, September 25.

A spokeswoman for the organisation said it "would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Alex Blake.”

Despite being asked multiple times whether the three employees were still employed, NHS Professionals did not reply. The three ward staff ‘have been removed from clinical duties’, the Trust said.

The Trust has been criticised by the campaigning charity, INQUEST, which told the News inadequate observations prior to Mr Blake's death was not an isolated incident.

"It is essential that key witnesses exercise candour to ensure a full and fair inquest hearing, and to uncover any failings within the case," the charity's director, Deborah Coles, added.

"Despite this, the coroner has been led to conclude that three witnesses had potentially falsified evidence at court.

"This hinders the vital functions of inquests to get to the truth of what happened and to prevent future deaths.”

“On behalf of the Trust I would like to

offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr Alex Blake,” said Vanessa Smith, Interim Director of Nursing at the Trust.

“We are working closely with NHS Professionals who are investigating the incident.

“Pending the outcome of the investigation we will take steps to review our policies and procedures if necessary.

“We want to do everything we can to make sure every member of staff is supported and equipped to provide our patients with the highest standards of care.”

NHS Professionals staff at the Trust’s hospitals who are undertaking observations are required to carry out a competency assessment, she added.

NHS Professionals also did not answer whether the unnamed employees had been referred to the nursing watchdog or any other authorities following Mr Blake’s death, despite multiple requests.

Highlighting the type of projects awarded, the council said funding spent last year on La Liga Women’s Football League in Elephant and Castle had proven a huge success, helping more women to become physically active and removed social barriers, bringing different cultures together. The league is cheap, to ensure that it is open to as many women as possible.

Over 230 groups across Southwark, received Neighbourhoods Funding last year.

Cllr Rebecca Lury, Cabinet Member for culture, leisure, equalities and

communities said: “I was impressed by the variety of local projects which were put forward last year. I would encourage everybody who lives in Southwark to team up with their local communities and add to this round of Neighbourhoods Fund applications.”

The Neighbourhoods Fund is open to applications until 7 October and successful projects will be announced at the borough’s five area meetings, in January 2020.

THIS IS not the first instance where concern has been raised over staff observations prior to patient deaths at South London and Maudsley Trust.

A jury inquest in July this year found that ‘inadequate levels of observation’ amounting to ‘neglect’ had caused the death of 27-year-old Kenan Canalp by suicide at the Maudsley Hospital on March 8, 2018.

On March 5, Mr Canalp – from Peckham, and described by family as a ‘truly inspiring person’ – was admitted to the Maudsley in Denmark Hill from King’s A&E following an attempt on his life.

He was transferred to the ES2 ward on March 7 and should have been placed on 1:1 observations, but instead was placed on general observation.

Staff also failed to conduct an assessment for suicidal intention in the hours prior to his death, despite noticing a red mark around his neck. This amounted “to neglect as a failing of basic care, dependency and obvious needs, gross failure due to serious risk of

“Kenan was a gift and an education to me as his mother. He was a truly inspiring person. We all miss Kenan dreadfully. I wish he was still here,” said his mum, Anne Mosley.

INQUEST, which has supported Mr Canalp’s family, condemned ‘neglect and basic failures’ from SLaM staff in the wake of the 27-year-old’s death.

“Whilst we welcome their admission of multiple failures at the inquest, the real test lies in the implementation of changes across SLaM mental health services,” said senior caseworker, Anita Sharma following July’s inquest.

The charity has also compiled a list of other inquest outcomes which it says shows a series of ‘failures and in some cases neglect’ in mental health care at the Trust.

“I am deeply sorry that we failed to keep Mr Canalp safe while he was in our care,” said Vanessa Smith of SLaM. “We recognise there were significant failings in his care and we are taking steps to make sure this does not happen again.”

FORTY YEARS after last being held, Peckham’s Architectural Award is once again up for grabs.

The Peckham Society says it is reviving the annual award with a new judging panel chaired by writer Rory Olcayto, to champion and encourage highquality new development in SE15. The society says some projects have been “outstanding” in recent years, but many buildings are still under threat or have been lost.

Five buildings have been shortlisted, and the first winner in three decades will be announced on September 20, 2019 at an awards ceremony at Peckham Rye Station’s Old Waiting Room.

The ceremony will coincide with London’s yearly architectural festival, Open House London.

The Old Waiting Room itself is a heritage site, once forgotten, that was considered in past times as one of the grandest in London. It will be open throughout the Open House London weekend.

A HEART-BROKEN Bermondsey mother has issued a warning about the dangers of psychoactive drugs after her son fell to his death from a block of flats while under the influence of magic mushrooms.

An inquest on Friday into the death of twenty-year-old Ryan O’Donnell recorded a ‘drug-related’ verdict after hearing evidence from the free-climber’s friends, police, and medical experts.

Popular Ryan, described by friends as spiritual, a Buddhist, and a vegan, tragically fell to his death after climbing a

block of flats in Marden Square, off Bermondsey’s Drummond Road, in the early hours of May 10.

A toxicology report following the fatal fall subsequently found a positive reading for psilocin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms.

Speaking after the inquest, Ryan’s mum, Pam said she wanted to make other people aware of the dangers of taking hallucinogenics following the tragedy.

“I want it to be a warning to of the dangers of taking these hallucinogenic drugs, because this is what can happen,” she said.

“Something good can come of his death, if it warns other people. I don’t want his death to be wasted, I want other young people to realise how dangerous it can be.”

“We were relaxing and about 10pm decided to take some magic mushrooms.

Ryan had seemed happy and everything was fine,” said his partner of seven months, Evija Noreika, in a statement read at the inquest.

“He took about three grams or four grams, it’s a bit more than we had usually taken.”

Ryan and his partner were later joined by a mutual friend, Mazurevics Arturs, who had been staying with Ryan at his family home on Bermondsey’s Manor Estate.

“We had a close connection with lots of

love and understanding between us,” he said in a statement.

“In the last few days he was thinking about stuff quite a lot. He was planning to run a warehouse to organise raves there and set up a community.”

The Morley College student had suggested going climbing earlier in the evening, but was talked out of it by Mr Artus, the court heard.

But later an argument broke out between the two, while both were under the influence of the psychoactive drug.

“I felt like Ryan was hunting me. I ran away from him,” Mr Arturs said in a statement.

“My perception was crumbling at this point. I think Ryan was chasing me for about ten, fifteen minutes.”

Ryan was last seen by friends running away at around 4am, the court was told.

CCTV footage obtained by police showed the ‘free-spirit’ running down Drummond Road shortly after 4am, without a top or shoes on, wearing green trousers.

Video, taken from the cameras of a private residence on Marden Square, later captured the tragic moment that the music student fell from the block of flats through a nearby tree.

“The building he climbed, he had climbed before,” the court heard. “He

thought it was a safe place to climb... he liked to conquer his fears.”

“It’s clear firstly Ryan O’Donnell, who was only twenty-years-old, was a building climber, sometimes known as a freerunner, and he climbed buildings as a hobby. It seems as if he was good at it,” concluded Southwark assistant coroner, Philip Barlow.

“The principal underlying cause of that fall was the use of magic mushrooms. I accept the pathologist cause of death as multiple traumatic injuries.

“I would also like to record my condolences to the friends and family of Ryan for what seems a very tragic death.”

Previously speaking to the News from the family home, Pam paid a heartbreaking tribute to her ‘special baby’ as a ‘beautiful, free-loving spirit.’

“I’m devastated because he absolutely adored me,” she said. “How lucky is that?

Most kids hate their parents and I had a kid who loved his parent.”

The talented musician had been working part-time in a cloakroom at Oval Space, a club, while studying Music Production at Morley College in Lambeth prior to passing away. He had begun to write his own music prior to his death, his loved ones have told the paper, and was planning to do anything involving music and art to bring people together.

His thoughts were echoed by Rory Olcayto, the director of Open City, the charity behind the Open House London scheme, who said: “Peckham is showing the rest of London how to grow and develop in the 21st century, with intelligent reuse of old buildings and sensitively designed new ones too.

“And some of the capital’s best architects are working here – as evidenced by this superb shortlist.”

Dates set on Canada Water’s masterplan

DATES HAVE been set for councillors to hear the planning application for the first phase of the Canada Water Masterplan.

Marathon meetings are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 25 and September 30 to consider a detailed application for the first phase cover three plots of land and outline planning for future stages.

The mammoth 250-page report will be considered by councillors for the Masterplan which would see the transformation of a 53-acre of land in Canada Water, Surrey Quays and Rotherhithe.

Officers have recommended that the proposals are accepted, subject to certain conditions such as referral to the Mayor and British Land has pledged the Masterplan would bring around 3,000 new homes to the area, of which a minimum of 35 per cent would be ‘affordable’ and office space for around 20,000 jobs.

However, concerns have been raised in the local community about the impact of overcrowding in the peninsula, particularly on transport routes.

The target date for the completion of the Masterplan, if approved, is 2033.

It baffles me how Geoffrey Boycott could have been honoured T HE NEWS that cricketer Geoffrey Boycott is to get a knighthood in Theresa May’s resignation honours has caused consternation and condemnation.

The court heard he viciously attacked his girlfriend holding her down and punching her 20 times in the face. The picture of her bruised face and black eyes were there for all to see. Though he pleaded not guilty he was convicted in 1998. But he’s never accepted the conviction and continues to deny it to this day.

Singling out a perpetrator of domestic violence for one of our highest civic awards sends out a terrible message. It says to women that their bruises and broken bones don’t matter. It says to men you can still be seen as an exceptionally good guy even if you’ve beaten your girlfriend black and blue. At a time when we are still fighting against the culture that excuses or condones domestic abuse that is terrible.

It is baffling that this domestic abuser should have been honoured by Theresa May. She wanted her commitment to tackling domestic violence to be one of

her key legacies. She introduced the Domestic Abuse Bill. Now the Boycott honour has overshadowed it. Imagine the Queen being put in the position of having to bring her ceremonial sword down on to the shoulder of a convicted womanbeater!

And domestic violence is a growing problem. Domestic homicide reached a new high last year with 173 people killed by their partner or former partner - nearly all the victims women, nearly all the killers, men.

But despite this, councils are having to scale back their vital services to support women and children seeking to escape violence. The Tory government has cut almost half of Southwark Council funding since they took over in 2010.

And as a result their spending on refuges for victims has had to be cut.

The Domestic Abuse Bill introduced by Theresa May in July had wide crossparty support and I together with hundreds of victims and charities had worked with the Government to develop the new measures in the Bill. These included establishing a Domestic Abuse Commissioner, ending the cross-

examination of victims by their abusers in family courts and imposing a duty on all local councils to provide accommodation-based refuge for domestic violence victims. I also planned to bring forward an amendment to ensure the government gives councils a ringfenced pot of money for these services and to end the defence whereby a man can excuse his violence by saying it was a “sex game gone wrong”.

But now that Boris Johnson has taken over as Prime Minister, and Parliament has been shut down, the Bill has been lost.

When the House of Commons gets back on October 14th it is up to Boris Johnson to bring the Bill forward again.

We all hope he will. But it will have to start its journey through Parliament from the beginning again meaning yet more delay.

Dropping the Bill, knighting abusers and slashing funds for refuges is not the way to tackle the tide of domestic violence. The Government is paralysed

by Brexit. But Brexit is not the only thing that matters. Women’s lives are being lost!

Lessons must be learned from tragic cases at South London & Maudsley Trust

OWHERE should be safer for a person suffering poor mental health than hospital, but two cases we report on this week at South London and Maudsley (SLaM) Trust show that is not always necessarily the case.

SLaM provides mental health services across south London, including in Denmark Hill.

The deaths of Mr Blake and Mr Canalp are different, but one tragic similarity between them is striking.

Both were not observed as they should have been, despite their vulnerabilities.

For Peckham’s Mr Canalp, Maudsley staff failed to place him on 1:1 observations while sectioned in an acute psychiatric ward – a gross failing which ultimately led to his death by suicide on March 8, 2018.

This amounted to neglect from the Trust, for which it has deeply apologised.

For 36-year-old Mr Blake, who suffered a history of drug abuse and mental illness, inadequate observations at Lambeth Hospital meant his death from a heroin overdose went unnoticed for several hours.

Evidence of rigor mortis was found by attending medics.

Even more worryingly, the senior coroner in that case has opined that three temporary staff on duty may have even falsified evidence in court over the observations conducted in the early morning of June 24, 2018.

Following July’s inquest into Mr Canalp’s death, campaigners compiled a list of other cases which they say show ‘failures and in some cases neglect’ at the Trust.

This paper has reported repeatedly on difficulties the Trust has faced. In November 2018, while rated good overall, acute adult wards were deemed ‘inadequate’ due to ‘breaches of fundamental standards of care’.

Staff afterwards admitted a ‘red line’ had been breached in care.

Since then the Trust has made significant improvements says the care watchdog – which praised the dedication of staff working across the Trust’s hospitals.

And to be sure, staff at the Trust are stuck between a rock and hard place when demand surges everhigher while funding lags behind. They have rightly characterised this as a picture of ‘high need, low investment’. This too must be addressed.

INQUEST director, Deborah Coles, told this paper that the vital function of inquest hearings are to learn lessons for the future, most crucially to prevent future deaths.

We hope any lessons from the tragic cases of Mr Blake and Mr Canalp have already been learned at the South London and Maudsley Trust.

Residents around Peckham Rye and East Dulwich have reported a strange ‘orange mud or dust’ on their shoes while walking across the grass at Peckham Rye park.

It has only appeared at the beginning of this month, and has sparked debate on residents’ forums about the cause.

Level heads have suggested dust carried over from warmer climes as a result of recent hot weather, or, most likely, ‘lawn rust’, a common fungal growth in late summer.

But, suggested another, perhaps “NASA are secretly filming their first manned Mars mission on Peckham Rye at night by covering it in iron oxide dust.” You heard it here first, folks.

Last year the ballroom dancer was invited to the Yalding Centre in Bermondsey’s Southwark Park Road for a tea dance.

Soon after he appeared on a BBC appeal filmed at the centre with Southwark members of Age UK. He had a fabulous time with the pensioners, he says – so much so, he took pains to tell it as an anecdote while appearing in Dictionary Corner on day-time quiz show, Countdown, last week.

If he was invited again, he wouldn’t say no, he added.

Time for Southwark’s pensioners to break out their dancing shoes again?

A VOLUNTEER who befriends older, BAME people with mental health issues is skydiving this Saturday to raise funds for the Peckham-based project.

Sandra Johnson will jump on September 21 to raise funds for Peckham Befrienders, part of the South London and Maudsley Foundation Trust’s volunteering programme and supported by the Maudsley Charity.

She began volunteering in January 2019, and uses her own experience of mental health issues to support others at the community drop-in and befriending service.

“I discovered just how many people in the community are really isolated,” she said.

“Without it, they’d have no safe space where they can just go, listen to music, relax and socialise with other people.”

Some of the outings the befrienders take part in include bowling, gym sessions, cinema tripps, museum visits and alternative therapies.

Sandra first experienced mental health problems ten years ago.

“As someone who has been detained and treated at the Maudsley Hospital, I don’t want to be afraid to share my story if it helps to inspire hope for

recovery in others,” she said.

After losing a friend to suicide earlier this year, she decided to skydive in his memory and has

A WOMAN bus driver was attacked with what was initially thought to be a ‘corrosive’ substance in Surrey Quays on Thursday evening, September 12.

The substance, initially treated by the authorities as a suspected acid attack, was later found not to be an acid.

The attack took place at the junction of Redriff Road with Onega Gate

shortly before 9pm.

The substance was thrown in the face of the 52-year-old C10 bus driver following an ‘altercation’ with a motorist. She was treated at the scene and taken to hospital for treatment as a precaution.

A witness who had been making a delivery in the nearby area at the time told the News: “They asked us to leave, to not get closer, because we could get contaminated.”

He described seeing around twenty

officers, three ambulances and a fire truck at the scene. He also said a blonde woman was doused with water by firefighters at the scene.

“She was shaking with pain, the firemen involved used a huge plastic [hose] and washed her body,” he said.

Scotland Yard said it had made no arrests following the incident and their investigation continues.

Trading standards say during the sale, 24-year-old Mohammed Ismail Khan opened a locked cabinet of knives for the undercover police volunteer to choose from, while money was exchanged with Saidrazan Khan, aged 56, who was working at the till. The case was taken to Camberwell Magistrates’ Court, where all pleaded guilty to selling the six-inch kitchen blade (pictured) to a child under eighteen in February of this year.

In total, the Peckham business and two

staff members were fined a total of £3,610 – including costs and victim surcharge.

Cllr Victoria Mills, Cabinet Member for Finance, Performance and Brexit, said: “Unfortunately this trader fell foul of the standards expected and sold without taking any steps to check the age of the purchaser.

“We always want to work together with businesses to ensure they follow the best practice when stocking and selling knives but we will not hesitate to prosecute businesses that are falling short.”

A MURDER investigation was launched last week, after a baby girl was found unresponsive and later died at an SE16 address in April.

Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command are investigating the death of the eight-week-old baby girl at the residential property in April.

Police say the infant was found unresponsive on Friday, April 26 this year, and ambulance and police were called to the unidentified property.

Sadly, she was pronounced dead at

the scene at around 10.15am.

On May 3, police arrested a man, 24, and a woman, 21, on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after a postmortem scan revealed a “number of broken bones.”

Police say an initial post-mortem was inconclusive, but following further testing officers arrested the pair on suspicion of murder. They have both been released on bail to a date in midOctober, said Scotland Yard.

Officers led by Detective Chief Inspector John Massey are continuing to investigate.

The baby girl’s next-of-kin have also been made aware.

Khan’s store is fined for underage knife sale PECKHAM

KHAN’S BARGAIN and two of its employees were fined more than £3,000 after an underage knife sales sting.

A sixteen-year-old girl had been deployed by Southwark Council’s Trading Standards team, with an undercover police officer, to the famous shop at 135 Rye Lane in February of this year.

The court was told she was served by two members of staff without asking for

funds in response to its high levels of knife crime and the disproportionate impact on young people.

Last week London Trading Standards launched their Responsible Retailer Agreement on Knife Sales, encouraging shops and their staff to “asses, challenge, check” the age of online and offline

New figures analysed by the Chartered Trading Institute show that 160 knives were sold to volunteers as young as thirteen last year across London’s boroughs, with one in nine stores - and two in five online retailers - making an underage sale.

Beauty & the blind in power struggle

Kicking off their second Spanish Contemporary season – which this year has a focus on female writers – is Catherine Boyle translation of Paloma Pedrero’s The Eyes of the Night.

Centred around an unusual and

unexpected encounter between a successful businesswoman and a blind lottery ticket seller, The Eyes of the Night is an exploration of power, fear and the senses.

Lucia (Lanna Joffrey) is at the top of her game, professionally speaking, and yet her life remains unfulfilled and lonely, shadowed by a failing, loveless marriage. How she ends up in a hotel room with Angel (Samuel Brewer) is not entirely clear and neither it seems are his expectations as to what his paid services might be.

Both characters are altogether unlikeable

in their flaws and yet almost impossible to look away from. The visually impaired Angel, is unnecessarily aggressive and misogynistic while Lucia is disparagingly cruel and goading. The pair, in one room for the 90 minute runtime results in a volatile tension throughout that isn’t always pleasant to watch. The invasion of space, both mental and physical are uncomfortable and frustrating to sit back and witness and yet, each time, just about manages to teeter back before it is too late. Angel wants Lucia to experience his reality by removing her contact lenses, perhaps with the hope of making some discoveries about herself in the process or perhaps to show his dominance - The auditorium is plunged into darkness for almost a 10 minute period. The power struggle between the two goes on, each of them seeking triumph over the other while both bearing caution when they come too close to victory.

Overall it is an intriguing premise that is well paced and well presented. However, despite Joffrey and Brewer’s best efforts, Lucia and Angel’s recidivism makes it hard to care for them beyond the walls of the hotel room.

Volleys of vitriol end in devastation

She drinks gin from Monday to Friday until he comes home for weekends when they pretend at being happy. From the opening salvo of abuse between Diana and Robin Hesketh the whole audience knew this new play, Hansard, was going to be a blinder, and we were correct.

‘The whole country ravaged and decimated and they still keep voting Conservative!’ She rages. ‘It seems to be everyone’s dream to get f*cked by an Old Etonian!’ She adds. And so it continued, line after great line was volleyed from each end of the wide stage as we watched on, our heads swivelling from left to right in unison like a Wimbledon crowd. ‘You smell like a bottle bank,’ re-turns Robin with a backhand straight down the line. After one diatribe from Diana on how the poor and vulnerable had been downtrodden for years by Tory rule, her husband counters with, ‘Have you been at The Guardian again? I told the newsagent not to serve you any more.’ Genius, pure genius from writer Simon Woods who, we read in the programme, was actually at school with BoJo, Cam-eron and many others who have carried on an Eton network that pulls the strings in the most im-portant areas of our daily lives.

Woods, however, was a scholarship boy rather than one of the enti-tled and privileged pupils who were merely following on from a long line of entitled and privileged Old Etonians.

volley towards Mr Hes-keth as he mixes the perfect Bloody Mary during this battle of wicked wit. ‘I’ve worn the headscarves and twin sets, and indulged in casual racism for you…’ He dodges that one by topping up Diana’s glass.

It comes across as a play for today because we can relate everything on the stage to everything we have recently read in the papers. Then, about a quarter of the way through, there is a mention of Clause 28, Margaret Thatcher’s controversial law that put an already sidelined LGBT community more at risk. Then Sue Lawley was mentioned, and it slowly dawned on us that this was the 80s and not this week in Parliament.

Very cleverly done. Advantage Woods.

Hansard is a daily record of what is said in Parliament and is the hook to which this play hangs its narrative on. The record kept by the Heskeths, through old cine film and a diary, however, is the bad memories of their life together that led

to incorrect assumptions being made and the place they find themselves in right now. The raucous cross court rallies eventually lost their humour as family secrets were unearthed to reveal the hidden shame and guilt. The sins of bad parenting over genera-tions now had them both struggling to return to winning ways. Deuce.

The devastating end came quickly and suddenly after the initial euphoria and caught us all by sur-prise. Game, set and match to Lindsey Duncan and Alex Jennings for 90 minutes of quite brilliant performing. Hats off, too, for Simon Godwin’s direction.

There will be a live broadcast to over 700 UK cinemas on November 7th.

Rachmaninoff racks up the tunes

THEMES OF ‘failure’ are at the heart of Dave Malloy’s musical extravaganza Preludes, guaranteeing audience identification, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor...

Based on the Russian virtuoso, pianist and composer Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff, Preludes takes us on a journey into the tortured mind of a musical genius, who basically experienced a flop with his Symphony No 1, disclosing, ‘My mind can work against me’, leading him to seek hypnotherapy to get through the darkness.

Along with the composer’s splitting mind was the casting of both Rachmaninoff, (Tom Noyes) and Rach (Keith Ramsay), the latter a contemporary version of the composer, reminding us of the timeless nature of a knockback and the everlasting pain experienced. Ramsay’s decline mesmerises, riddled with angst we watch a man headed for psychosis. Drawing on musical theatre, Ramsay expresses a tormented soul from vulnerability to full blown rages and

everything in between.

Enter his love Natalya (Georgia Louise), who practically steals the stage with her performance. Ironically, her sweet persona does nothing to diminish her in the wake of Rach’s meltdown, instead she exudes a confidence that is compelling to watch, as she sings lines like, ’I’m an optimistic person’ and ‘your dark unknowable depression - isn't it a choice’. Unperturbed, she steadfastly dedicates her very being to Rach’s needs, pointing out how insignificant her own talent is, yet reminding us of female talent rejected globally.

Nice one Son FLORIAN ZELLER’S The Son is a tale of normal life for many, writes Michael Holland...

Most of us can connect to all least one strand of this story about a family falling apart through circumstance, selfishness and an inability to listen to each other.

For me, it was like a life in the day of any of the SE London estates I’ve lived on: Dad leaves Mum and Son to start a new family elsewhere with New Wife and New Baby.

Son, who lives with Mum and idolised Dad, now says, ‘I’ve been cut in half’, and starts to act out. Mum can’t handle Son so calls Dad to ‘have a word’.

And that’s when it all starts to go wrong because Dad wants to focus on his new family, Son wants his Dad back, and Mum, well, she just seems to want everyone and everything to be nice and back to how it was. No chance: Son wants to move in with Dad but New Wife don’t like it, Plus Mum now feels hated and abandoned by the two biggest loves in her life. And all of this was revealed before a gun, a knife and

mental health problems were introduced in to this play that never once looked like it was going to have a happy ending.

One problem was that the audience could see the Son’s downslide coming, so couldn’t understand why the parents on the stage couldn’t.

The Son highlights how one person in a family can impact on so many others, and it does it well. Laurie Kynaston in the title role does young man with problems perfectly. His nuanced portrayal of the helplessness that comes with a mental illness was both tragic and sweet -This is a very good play with only minor peeves that are not worth mentioning here. Okay, just one: the dad dancing for a little light relief was cringey and unnecessary.

idney and Martha Stow were quite remarkable individuals. Both were profoundly deaf but still managed to hold down jobs, raise two children and survive the Blitz, writes Debra Gosling...

Sidney was born in 1879 in Aspinden Road and initially took up employment as a junior tea packer before buying a chisel to train as a wheelwright. He was always a very fit man and in his youth he played sports at the Bermondsey Settlement in Farncombe Street. In fact, his woodworking skills came in very handy - the family still have a pair of wooden clubs he made to use in weight training at the settlement!

Martha worked in a laundry but also carried out close work as a seamstress, working her stitches from home.

She made intricate and very detailed crochet work which was used in mantle covers - a Victorian invention that covered the mantelpiece. Both of the jobs required little communication skills, which must have been a relief as this was long before the days of tiny, technological hearing aids. They both learned sign language and attended what they called 'the deaf and dumb church' in Evelyn Street, Deptford (Deptford Methodist Mission).

The couple had two children, Sidney Jnr and Doris, but there was also another loved and very valuable family member: Dolly, their pet dog. In Sidney's words, she was their

In 1965, Knox Brothers of Rotherhithe New Road conducted his funeral, where he was conveyed to Nunhead and reunited with Martha, Doris and dear old Dolly. After the service, the family began the sad and final process of clearing out Sidney's house. As they lifted the mattress off the old iron bedstead it came as a surprise (and a delight) to find a whole wad of old-style white five pound notes stuffed beneath. They added up to a thousand pounds and Sidney had been saving them for decades - that's a lot of old newspapers!

Slump continues as Hungerford stage comeback

A DRAMATIC second-half collapse from Dulwich Hamlet made it four defeats in five games, as the hosts blew a two-goal lead against Hungerford Town at Champion Hill last Saturday.

Hamlet, despite leading 2-0 at halftime, never looked in control, and were pegged back after the interval for the second week running.

Hungerford tested goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer three times early on.

He tipped over Mike Jones’ effort and saved again from Joe Tomlinson after parrying James Constable’s shot. The resulting corner trickled narrowly wide.

But it was the hosts who took the lead in the fourteenth minute through lone frontman Danny Mills’ looping backpost header from Jack Connors’ in-

swinging corner. It was Mills’ sixth goal of the season.

Left-back Connors, Hamlet’s best player in the first period, set up Mills again through a long throw-in in the 34th minute. Mills’ header was inches away from landing in the same corner of Adam Siviter’s net.

Gavin Rose’s Hamlet side then picked up a second diving booking in as many games. Referee Robert MasseyEllis blew his whistle after Jeffrey Monkana’s theatrical fall in the box, before brandishing yellow. Marvin McCoy was penalised at Braintree last week.

Connors kept getting forward, while Lewis White in front of him and Monkana on the other wing were lively. Meanwhile Mills’ movement, dropping deep before spinning in behind, posed numerous problems for Town defender Matt Berry-Hargreaves.

Dulwich doubled their lead four minutes before half-time, skipper David Ihaja driving low and hard on the half-volley from the edge of the box into Siviter’s bottom-left corner.

Mills then missed two chances to put Hamlet three up. The first was an audacious tight-angled chip onto the top of the stranded Siviter’s goal. Mills then scuffed a volley after Connors’ burst from deep inside his own half and dinked pass over the visiting defence.

Rose had criticised Hamlet’s application against Braintree last weekend, and his side improved in that aspect on Saturday. Richard Orlu’s full-blooded challenge may have caused him an injury, and he was replaced at half-time by Ben Chapman, with Quade Taylor slotting in alongside McCoy. Hungerford pulled a goal back three minutes after the break when Liam Ferdinand poked home from six yards.

The second half saw the right of Hamlet’s defence exploited time and again by marauding left-back Joe Tomlinson, who drew Town level in the 50th minute. Tomlinson received the ball unmarked in the corner of the box, before he jinked inside Aaron Barnes and bent a right-footed shot into the far corner.

Ten minutes later, substitute Zidan Akers cracked an effort from a tight angle into the side-netting, before Tomlinson burst in behind Barnes, cutting inside again and almost producing an identical finish.

On 68 minutes, Hungerford completed the turnaround when wide man Matt Jones fired left-footed into the bottom corner. It was another goal from Hamlet’s right.

Dulwich went in search of a late equaliser, and Sitiver stopped a pointblank header from Mills, before

Molly Hawkins and stand-in captain Emily Stanley, in the absence of club skipper Ruby Snowden.

Shannan Drewe converted from the spot early in the second half, before Hawkins netted twice more to complete her hat-trick.

Reid was impressed with some elements of the performance, but recognised that there is room for improvement.

“I said to the girls that there’s still a lot of work to do but what winning does is bring that confidence so it becomes a habit,” Reid said. “I said to them, ‘well done today’, it’s a very hot day. Onwards and upwards.”

Reid is trying to implement a passing style with his side.

He continued: “We have to know when to play out and how to play out but also when to go that little bit

more direct. Our game plan was to play forward and press early from the front which we did and we were rewarded with some early goals. That takes that pressure off to give you more of a chance to play from the back. If there’s an error, it’s not so costly. They’re learning the game quickly.

“I wanted a clean sheet at all costs even if we only won one-nil or twonil. You’re never going to lose a game in the league if you keep a clean sheet. We conceded one last week so the target was really just to keep a clean sheet and we did that, so fair play to them all, they’ve all worked their socks off.

“Obviously, we were missing Ruby.

I don’t like picking out individuals because we’re a team - we win, lose and draw together. Every single one of them can be commended on their

performance - they’ve all put a shift in, they’ve grafted which is really pleasing for me. At times, we played really good football but I want to see that tightened up a bit and not be so loose with our passing. We need to be more crisp to make it even more entertaining.”

Admission to St Paul’s for Lionesses games is free this season.

Reid added: “We want as many Millwall fans to come down as possible and when they see results like [Sunday’s] we hope that it’ll encourage more. We actively want the RTC to come down, we’ve had the under-12s down as ball girls. If word gets around that we’re playing good football, we’re entertaining and we’re scoring goals, then we’ll welcome more people.”

Hamlet stay twelfth in the table and have a break from National League South action on Saturday when they host Bognor Regis in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Lionesses boss wants improvement despite win by the dozen

MILLWALL LIONESSES manager Colin Reid insisted that there is “still a lot of work to do” despite his side’s 12-0 dismantling of Hoddesdon Town Owls in their opening match of the Eastern Regional Women’s Football League Division One South season.

On a hot day at St Paul’s last Sunday, Millwall played in front of a crowd of 346 people - with most thoroughly entertained by the action. Reid has encouraged more fans to come and support the women’s team.

The Lionesses raced into an early lead and led 9-0 at the half-time break, with goals in the first period coming from Ellis Lunn (5), Katie Klosinki (2),

ALLASSANI SET FOR ‘LONG PERIOD OF RECOVERY’ AFTER SERIOUS KNEE INJURY

DULWICH HAMLET have been dealt a huge blow with the news that Reise Allassani has suffered knee ligament damage in training.

It is the second time in his career he has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, after the same injury three years ago when he was at Crystal Palace.

Allassani was on loan with his former club Hamlet from Coventry City but will return to his parent club ahead of surgery.

Binitie treble helps Rye through

PECKHAM RYE made their return to the London Cup last weekend as they defeated South London Doves 5-3.

With goalkeeper Mick Holman unavailable, Keenan Rochester took the gloves and was beaten early as the visitors took the lead.

The Rye were quick to respond and levelled through Duke Binitie’s penalty, but the hosts went into the break 2-1 down as the Doves proved difficult opponents.

Rye boss Danny Gibson rang the changes at the break and changed his side’s formation.

The re-jig worked as substitute Darren Thomas made it 2-2 with a superb strike

from the edge of the box.

But the Doves persisted and took the lead for the third time after a scramble in the box.

It didn’t look like it was going to be the Rye’s day as they had a goal disallowed and then Binitie missed from the penalty spot.

But Binitie got a third opportunity from twelve yards after another substitute, Emanuel Lawal, was fouled, and this time the striker scored to make it 3-3.

Binitie wasn’t finished as he completed his hat-trick, before John Woolley secured the win by firing home a half-volley from 35 yards.

Gibson said: “We had to dig deep, show character and we got a good result.

FISHER HALTED a five-match losing streak when they drew 1-1 at home to Chatham Town at St Paul’s last weekend.

TWENTY MINUTES after the final whistle at Ewood Park last Saturday, Neil Harris was still sat, alone, in the away dugout staring at the empty pitch.

Three of Millwall’s media team waited to conduct the club’s post-match interview as Harris gathered and tried to make sense of his thoughts.

He had just seen his side lose on a 20 scoreline that could have been a lot worse. A penny for his thoughts. Perhaps a sense of early-season optimism shuttered by a second league defeat of the season.

It’s now five games without a win, but Harris looked genuinely surprised by one of the questions in the press conference in a room called 'The Theatre'. Rows of seats slope down to where the managers sit behind a table.

Harris, now more positive than he had looked in the dugout, was asked if he was “concerned” by his side’s form.

“Very strange after last week, because everyone was saying how well we’d done,” he responded. “Now you’re asking me if I’m concerned. I want to get points. Coming to Blackburn to lose 2-0 is disappointing, but you’re playing a very good team.

“If you read the manager’s programme notes, he’s talking about a top-six side.

We are a new group developing and we've had a real strong start. Obviously performances need to keep on

improving but we are playing at a good level.

“New players have to adapt and ultimately anyone that’s in the team has to play well to stay in the team, otherwise they won't play.

“I see a lot of positives in my team, but there are some players still finding their feet and it takes time. It’s a tough league and we will keep trying to improve our players.”

But what of those concerns referred to?

One could be the goal tally this season, and how they have been scored.

The Lions have five goals in seven Championship games. Only one hasn’t been from a set-piece – Jed Wallace’s in the opening-day 1-0 win against Preston from Connor Mahoney’s cross.

Millwall haven’t been free-scoring in the Championship. In 2017-18, when they finished eighth, they scored 56 times in 46 games. Last season that figure was 48, and this season so far it’s under a goal a game.

That’s not to say their goal-scoring is set to be on a certain downward trajectory over the course of this season, but Millwall haven’t scored more than one goal in a game in their last fourteen league fixtures. That’s almost a third of a campaign.

They didn’t really look like finding the net last Saturday. Ryan Leonard saw one long-range effort easily saved by Christian Walton and also fired wide after a run from deep.

Mahlon Romeo also tried his luck but Walton was behind his low effort.

Millwall hadn’t the creativity before the break to make good chances.

Wallace came in frequently off his right wing to try to knit things together.

He had one shooting chance, but his effort went well wide.

Rovers boss Tony Mowbray had picked a three-man central defence in anticipation of combating Matt Smith.

The Lions’ striker started on the bench but Rovers’ set-up, designed to be watertight at the back, gave them attacking outlets in wide areas. Their wing-backs, Elliott Bennett and Greg Cunningham, combined for Rovers’ first goal, the latter teeing up Derrick Williams for a rasping 25-yard drive into the corner of Bart Bialkowski’s goal.

Harris felt there were three times in the lead-up to it that his side could have prevented the goal. Certainly Romeo is experienced enough to know to head behind for a corner if he’s not sure who’s behind him. Instead his back-header landed at Cunningham’s feet and Williams was the ultimate beneficiary.

Mowbray made an attacking substitution at half-time, sending on Sam Gallagher for John Buckley.

Bialkowski made three saves in quick succession early in the second half as Rovers threatened to put the game to bed. The pick of them was from Adam Armstrong, who got beyond Millwall’s defence, but Bialkowski’s strong left hand from a shot from eight yards out kept his side in it.

Millwall struggled to create anything.

Smith came on after an hour but didn’t get much service. Harris made a double switch in the 77th minute when Shane Ferguson and Tom Bradshaw replaced Murray Wallace and Leonard. There seemed to then be some confusion who was playing where.

By then Rovers were already two goals ahead, Dack finishing a low cross to the back post from Darragh Lenihan.

The Lions thought they should have had a penalty when Gallagher seemed to bundle over Jake Cooper. Harris said referee Dean Whitestone had "bottled" the decision.

There was that and plenty more to contemplate when Harris took those moments to himself after the stadium had emptied.

Jake Cooper is a marked man on set-pieces this season

JAKE COOPER isn’t exactly hard to miss on the pitch – but he might need to do more to get the attention of referees if he’s to break his goal duck this season.

Six foot five inches Cooper said after the 1-1 draw against Hull at The Den that he was convinced he should have had three penalties in the previous six games.

The centre-back hasn’t scored yet this campaign, after seven goals in 2018-19 brought his Millwall career tally to thirteen.

And last Saturday, with his side trailing 1-0 to Blackburn Rovers, Cooper was perplexed with referee Dean Whitestone after one incident involving Sam Gallagher in the second half when Millwall had an attacking set-piece.

“The referee stopped the corner coming in to speak to the guy marking me to say, ‘you can’t do that’,” Cooper explained.

“And then the corner comes in and I go down, and I speak to the referee and he said he wasn’t even watching me from the corner.

“I’m thinking, ‘what more can I do?’ I’m asking the ref to watch me and he’s not even watching me. I’ll get one eventually, I know I will. It’s a long wait but hopefully I’ll get on the end of one rather than have to rely on the referee.

“I always try to make referees aware of it. Especially with my stats from last

season, players are starting to try more things to stop me. I make the referees aware of it and whether they watch me is out of my control.

“We’ve certainly worked on set-pieces but could work on it more. I’ve had conversations with Matt [Smith] and people that take the corners, Willo [Shaun Williams] and Lenny [Ryan Leonard], and it’s more of a conversation that we should have.

“It’s one of our biggest threats and teams are certainly working hard on it when they come to face us. You could see in the Hull game that they had worked a lot on defending set-plays.

“If we carry on working on it and trying to improve it will be a massive threat for us, especially when goals are lacking from open play. If we can just get one from a set-play it turns the performance around when we know we’ve not played as well as we can.”

Cooper felt Millwall left the game behind them at Ewood Park.

“It was a tough one to take,” he admitted, “we sensed they were there for the taking and we didn’t live up to our own expectations to take advantage of that, which was a bit annoying.

“They scored a great goal in the first half but we made little mistakes in the buildup. To stop a strike like that is difficult, you don’t get them very often.

“Our reaction was very good after the goal, we built ourselves back into the game but just lacked the threat in the final third.

We were getting into good areas but not creating that clear-cut chance. We couldn’t

Former Reading defender Cooper highlighted an area where the side needs to improve.

“We’ve only scored one goal from open play [in the league] and that’s something we’ve got to work on,” he said.

“For people like myself, I’m not chipping in with goals from set-plays yet. There’s certainly stuff to improve on and hopefully that game on Saturday can put our feet on the ground and there’s the realisation that we’ve got a lot of work to do.

“Every week at this club we have to battle for every little thing that we earn.

Hopefully that game will show us that’s the way.

“Full credit to Blackburn, they’ve got a great side with players like Bradley Dack and Adam Armstrong, they cause problems. We knew that but we sensed they weren’t quite at the top of their performance, which was the most frustrating thing for us, that we didn’t capitalise on that.”

A positive for Millwall has been their defensive performances at home. The Lions haven’t conceded from play at The Den this season.

Cooper praised his former Royals teammate Alex Pearce and Bart Bialkowski for their impacts this season.

Cooper continued: “Bart’s been a brilliant addition to the squad, you can tell his class with the saves he’s made.

“It’s been great to have him and I think we’ve done alright in defence. We were chasing the game a bit last Saturday when they scored the second.

“At home we’ve kept two clean sheets in three so we’ll be looking to back that up on Saturday.

“I’ve played with Pearcey since my first game at Reading when I was nineteen, so I know what he’s all about. He knows what I deliver as well so it’s simple playing with him.

“Hutch [Shaun Hutchinson] came back looking really well in the summer so we’ve had a good bit of competition in that area this season. There’s lots of competition all

around the pitch. It’s great to have top players here and hopefully we can keep a strong squad together.

“Understanding does take time to build, especially when we’ve got a high number of new players this season. I think they’ve settled in well, it’s a great environment at the minute. Maybe games like last Saturday will show them more that at this club we have to work for everything we get.

“We had a great pre-season and we took that into the start of the season. Now it’s just that period between having a good start and getting a run until Christmas time. We need to build that.”

Millwall hope to have close to a full house when they meet QPR at The Den on Saturday.

“We’ve always had tough games against QPR, they’ve always been great atmospheres and I’m sure the fans will be looking forward to it,” Cooper added.

“We’re certainly looking forward to getting back in front of our own supporters and showing them what we can do.”

Jayson Molumby made his full league debut against Blackburn Rovers last weekend

Midfielder wants to do the business for Millwall before realising his Premier League ambition EXCLUSIVE

JAYSON MOLUMBY has revealed his appearance target this season for Millwall – but insists his ultimate aim is to make the Brighton first team in the Premier League.

Molumby, 20, made his first league start last weekend at Blackburn, and hopes to play more than 25 games in his loan spell with the Lions.

His four games in 2019-20 is already double the number of senior appearances in his career prior to his move to south London.

Lions fans have liked what they have seen so far, but if it all goes to plan Molumby is hoping it’s a springboard into Graham Potter’s Seagulls side.

Former Rangers and Scotland defender David Weir is the link for Brighton’s loan players, as the club’s pathway development manager.

Molumby had only a brief experience of Potter’s style, but the manager who led Ostersund from the Swedish fourth division to the first and into the last 32 of the Europa League, made an impression on the ambitious midfielder.

“I was only in a few meetings because I tore my quad the first day of training, but he was really good and his ideas were something I’d never seen before in football,” Molumby said. “When I spoke

to him he was a really good guy, just a normal guy. It felt quite strange speaking to him because he seemed so normal.

“The way he wants to play, there’s so much to it it’s actually really hard to explain. He’s got this clear vision and idea and we’re seeing it now the way they’re starting to play. It’s really attractive football and good to watch.

“I think they’ll do well this season.

“The Brighton first team is where I want to go. I want to be here for the season and hopefully have a good campaign with Millwall.

“But Brighton is where I’m contracted and I love Brighton as a place. As a club there are some really good people there so eventually I want to get into the Brighton team in the Premier League.”

Molumby returned to Millwall last week after captaining Ireland under-21s to two European Championship qualifying wins, over Armenia and Sweden.

He has earned rave reviews from Ireland fans, one of a number of promising youngsters in that underage group, including club team-mate Aaron Connolly who made his Premier League debut for Brighton against Manchester City this season.

Molumby has another manager with Ireland who has impressed him. Stephen Kenny is one of the most successful coaches in Irish club history, leading Dundalk into the Europa League group stages in 2016-17. They became the first Irish club ever to bag a point in the group

stages of a European competition and Kenny also led the side to multiple domestic trophies before taking over as boss of his country’s under-21s.

“The man-management is really good with Stephen,” Molumby said. “Since he came in he’s been very clear what he wants to do with us as a group. He wants us to play more football and express ourselves. He’s given us the belief to show what we can do.

“He’s also a manager that demands hard work. We all work hard and we’re a pressing team. Any team we go up against, the gaffer doesn’t care, he wants us to go and press and pass the ball.

“We manage games. It comes from us as well, knowing when to pass and when not to. When it’s on we’ll certainly do it.

“Young players are getting good firstteam action. Aaron is nineteen and playing in the Premier League. There are so many up-and-coming attacking players, so it’s exciting.

“Being captain is a big responsibility.

Everyone is coming with their own ego, at their club they’re the main young player. It’s important just to mix with everyone and get along with the different characters. That’s probably the hardest thing.

“But you have to do it and bring everyone together to achieve the same goal.

“I was an admirer of people like Steven Gerrard, Roy Keane, Scott Brown. I like players that are leaders, midfield

generals.”

Ireland have a succession plan in place that will see Kenny take over the senior side from former Millwall manager Mick McCarthy after Euro 2020.

But Molumby isn’t taking it for granted that that will give him a guaranteed route to a first senior cap.

He said: “Maybe it does, but I have to keep playing well under Stephen. There are a lot of games to be played at under21 with Stephen, but I need to be doing it at club level as well. It’s no good if he likes me now and in a year I’m not playing regularly in a club first team.

“I need to do my end over here and hopefully then put myself in the window.

I want to play 25 games-plus this season, I think that’s realistic from where I was at the start, missing a few games.

“All going well with injuries, touch wood, I don’t think that would be a bad season for me to get that under my belt.”

Molumby showed the same kind of courage as those players he lists as admiring when he left the small village of Cappoquin – population of under 700 in the last Irish census in 2016 – as a fifteen-year-old to move on his own to Brighton.

He has a tattoo on the inside of his right arm that reads, ‘Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin’, Irish Gaelic for ‘There’s no hearth like your own hearth’; There’s no place like home.

He wants to make his mum Claire, his family and his village proud of him.

“I got that probably when I was

eighteen,” he explained. “There’s no fire like a home fire.

“I’m really proud to be where I’m from in Ireland, a little village back in Waterford. Family does motivate me.

“My ma put a lot into me when I was younger, she sacrificed a lot. I want to try to make them proud. She would bring me to games, training, get me gear. Whatever I needed it was her who did everything for me.

“Hopefully I can play regularly and get them over for a few games.”

The best midfielders in the game have to be able to lead. Molumby isn’t afraid to bark orders, but admitted he is careful to know when and how to do it.

“I was always a bit of a moaner, I have a bit of a mouth on me,” Molumby joked.

“It’s good to have leaders like that, but at the same time make sure you’re not overdoing it. You have to do it for the right reasons. It’s about finding that balance.

“The lads here are all experienced pros so you kind of ease your way in. I just tried to learn off them at the start and then you come into your own and start to feel more comfortable. You then have the right to demand more from people and try to get the best out of them, it’s for the team at the end of the day.

“Everyone wants to win, so you need those standards.

“I want to keep playing and hopefully I can get my home debut under my belt.

I just want to play football and go out and do my best.”

MANAGER SEARCHING FOR WINNING FORMULA

NEIL HARRIS is trying to find the right “formula” for his Millwall side this season – but he is enjoying the process with a squad that wants to “learn and improve”.

Harris handed full league debuts to Jayson Molumby and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson at Blackburn last Saturday and will likely change his side again this weekend.

Matt Smith will be eager to face his former club, and could form a different striker partnership this weekend with Tom Bradshaw.

The Lions are aiming to continue their unbeaten home record this campaign and will be keen to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat to Blackburn.

Harris wants his side to be more clinical, after just five goals in seven league games, but has been pleased with the approach play up to the

opponent’s box.

“We’ve done it two ways. We’ve done it by being direct and picking up second balls and getting from box to box,” Harris said.

“And then there have been a couple of games where we played through the lines and played really well with the ball on the floor.

“That’s the mix I want to have, to be able to do both. We’ve done both and controlled games in that manner, but then it’s that final ball around the box.

“I’m on to the players at the moment about the movement, the awareness, the thought process around putting balls in the box from the right areas, attacking the ball. That’s the hardest part of the game, that’s why centreforwards cost the big money.

“We played some really good football last Saturday and for 75 minutes were the better team. But Blackburn created better chances than us in those 75 minutes.

“If you’ve got to be resolute and you’re not creating loads of chances, when shooting opportunities come within 20 yards of the goal you’ve got to do better as a team. And you’ve got to make sure you defend well and not give anything away.

“When a centre-half sticks it in your bottom corner from 25 yards that’s a bit of a kick in the nuts. That’s the level we play at and that’s the beauty of the Championship, the good teams will find ways to score goals.

“A lot of work will continue over the coming months to make us better.

For me as a manager it’s about finding a formula, getting the right players playing the right way. With a new group that takes time.

“I’m enjoying working with the lads and finding a way. What I do know about this group of boys is that they want to learn and improve, and they want to be better.

“Most of them have played at this level for a couple of years now or

longer.

They’re established Championship players and comfortable at this level, it’s just making sure we find that mix in the whole team.”

Jiri Skalak and Frank Fielding are Millwall’s only absentees through injury.

Mark Warburton’s QPR are aiming to break into the top six this weekend.

They have thirteen points after seven games following their 3-2 win over Luton last Saturday. The Hoops are seventh, four points ahead of the Lions in the Championship table.

Ebere Eze, 21, has already shown Millwall he may have been the one that got away with a goal in the Hoops’ 20 win at Loftus Road last season.

He was on the scoresheet last weekend when he fired home the opener from 25 yards in his side’s 3-2 win against Luton that leaves them outside the play-off places only on goal difference.

Eze joined the west London club the August after his release following Neil Harris’ first full season in charge of Millwall.

The attacker didn’t make a first-team Lions appearance, but caught the eye with the under-21s, scoring a hat-trick against his current side in October 2015.

Greenwich-born Eze started just one game for QPR in his first season, a 2-

1 defeat at home to Blackburn in the third round of the FA Cup. But a loan move to Wycombe at the start of 2017-18 really accelerated his development. He scored five goals in sixteen league starts in League One, before heading back to his parent club in January and finally forcing his way into the first-choice side.

Eze’s talent got a bigger audience last season when he made 43 league appearances and Southampton are one of a number of Premier League clubs reportedly keeping an eye on him. He has been rated at £15million if he does leave QPR. Harris praised Eze ahead of the clash with their London rivals.

“I think Ebs has matured a lot. He’s a cracking lad and I’m really pleased he’s gone on to do well,” Harris said.

“When boys leave here you always want to see them do well. You’re always going to get one over ten, twelve, fifteen years that goes away and does well after coming out of the club.

“But the hundreds that leave us, we want to see them do well and play professional football. We’re so pleased to see players we’ve let go or have left us have league careers.

“Ultimately, it’s not just about getting as many into our team as possible, you want to give them due care and attention and see them progress off the pitch as young men, as well as see them become really good footballers.

“I’m pleased for Ebs that he’s doing well, but also pleased for the boys that leave us and go and have good careers in league football or at high levels in non-league.”

“When push came to shove it was time for me to move on. I came into pre-season under the new manager at QPR and it was very, very evident to me that I was surplus to requirements. It was based on about seven conversations within the first week. They wanted to bring a different type of player in and my time was over.

“At that point it was a case of seeing what interest was there. The [Millwall] interest I was very aware of from day one. It was a case of getting that sorted, really.

I’m not the type to sit down and collect the money without contributing or impacting. It was always in the forefront of my mind that I wanted to be in an environment where I could, and that was here.”

Smith and Morison’s paths briefly crossed at Leeds, first in the summer of 2013 before Morison departed.

Smith said: “Steve left to go to Millwall on loan the moment I came in to Leeds. We had a preseason together the following season but I left to go to Fulham on deadline day.

“My experiences of playing football with him were pretty limited. We were in apartment blocks next to each other in Leeds so we’d share cars into training quite regularly and go for lunch in Leeds afterwards.

“I really got on with Moro. Our football aligned for six weeks, so not a lot of time.

“The Morison-Gregory partnership is well-documented, they were terrific in League One to get the club back into the Championship and then Millwall finished just outside the play-offs.

“They are big shoes to fill, but all I can do is try to bring my experience to the team and try to help us get goals and win games.”

The Lions are unbeaten at The Den this season, with two wins and a draw.

They are aiming to bounce back after last Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Blackburn.

“I think it was a really positive start,” Smith added. “The positive for us as a collective is that we feel we could be higher up the table.

Particularly the Boro and Hull games we dropped points when we should have picked up all three in both cases.

“That’s only got to be a positive for the group, that we’re disappointed with the return, despite it being a really good start.”

MATT SMITH revealed he knew that he wasn’t wanted at QPR when Mark Warburton took over in the summer – and said he felt “valued” when Millwall made their approach.

Morison.

That was five years after Millwall’s first approach for the target man, when he was at Leeds United. Harris had also tried to sign him in previous windows.

Smith will face his former employers for the first time when the Hoops travel to south London this Saturday.

The former Fulham centre-forward knew Millwall were the perfect fit this summer.

“The fact that I was so wanted was a big thing,” Smith said. “As a striker to feel valued you get that

extra spring in your step when you’ve got that belief and confidence behind you. That was the biggest pull factor.

“Obviously playing in a team that suits my style of play is paramount.

I think in modern-day football a lot of managers are going away from the two-up-front mentality. The more direct play is lost on some, my style of play can be a little bit of love/hate.

So to come into an environment where they wanted to get the best out of me, they wanted to play to my strengths, was a big attraction.

bids under Ian Holloway. At the time I was very settled at Leeds, I had no intention of leaving.

“But then it was a really crazy last two weeks of the transfer window. I ended up going to Fulham in the final hour of the transfer deadline. That was something I hadn’t envisaged happening at all, by which time the Millwall interest had passed.

“There had been interest before but QPR didn’t want to get rid of me, they’d always seen me as an integral part of the squad.”

The Lions host London rivals QPR this Saturday as they aim to add to their home haul of seven points from three games.

The Den is set to see its biggest crowd of the season for the visit of Mark Warburton’s side.

Millwall are unbeaten at home against the Hoops in six games since February 1990.

“The last couple of years the games at The Den have been great atmospheres,” Harris said. “They’ve been feisty games, both fixtures last year were fast and physical.

“The games at Loftus Road have had excellent atmospheres, and I expect nothing different. I know we got beaten last weekend but seven points from nine at home is a real positive for us.

“The disappointment after Hull when we were all a little bit deflated at the final whistle was down to the fact we should have won the game and had nine points.

“The Den is a hard place to come and we have to make sure we continue that throughout the season.

The importance isn’t just what the players are doing on the pitch, it’s what the fans are doing as well, and the noise levels.

“It’s been outstanding, the first three games, and that’s the fans wanting to back their team. The players have to respond to that, and they have done. They have to continue to do that.

“When it’s like that it’s a really difficult place for the opposition.”
