TRIBUTES HAVE poured in for former ‘Millennium Mayor’ of Southwark Charlie Cherrill, who passed away last week after a short illness.

His son, Matthew, said Charlie died peacefully, surrounded by family at St Christopher’s Hospice in Sydenham on Thursday, September 5.

“He was proud to serve the borough in which he was born and spent almost his entire life”, he said.

Charlie, from Walworth, who was Mayor from 1999-2000, was known for his commitment to young people and encouraging them to get into politics, and support for Southwark Pensioners’ Centre.

Southwark Council leader Peter John said he would miss the optimism of a man he described as “the very best of Southwark”.

“He loved our borough, its people and its history. And he always worked to make it a better place. He was the Mayor during the Millennium year and nothing sums up the spirit of that time and our borough’s new place in London than the picture of him walking with the Queen and the

Speaking about the internal opposition against him, he said: “I don’t give a flying monkeys about what people who don’t live here in this constituency think.”

He went on to say “every process has been followed” and there’s not much he can do if “members don’t check their junk emails”.

The final two members’ votes take place tonight (Thursday) before the party’s affiliates have their say. So far, Coyle is on much firmer ground than many anticipated.

“I take nothing for granted,” he said. “I know that I will make my case for voters in the same way I did in 2015, I promise I will never vote for anything that would harm them.”

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid announced the short-term cash in the latest government spending review last Monday in a raft of commitments that, for the first time since 2002, involved no cuts handed to government departments.

The £1.5 billion extra available to local authorities across the country includes a £1 billion new grant, and £500 million through the adult social care precept – funding through allowing council tax rises.

Councillor Victoria Mills said: “Any additional funding for local government is welcome but this new money goes way to addressing the huge loss of funding that Southwark has seen since 2010.

“Years of cuts cannot be redressed in one review and I hope to see further resources being made available to local authorities.

“Additional money for social care and education is particularly welcome but this will not touch the sides of the deficits that some services have run up over recent years.

“Asking us to cope with the growing pressures on social care by levelling additional council tax on residents is also the wrong call – there should be sustained and clear funding for the needs of our most vulnerable residents.”

MILLWALL SUPER-FAN, little Harvey Brown, was given a surprise tour of a police HQ after an officer saw coverage of a halfmarathon run in his name.

Ten-year-old Harvey has the rare Morquio syndrome, which stunts skeletal growth, leaving sufferers with weak bones, a tendency to develop heart disease, and impaired vision and hearing.

As the News reported, Millwall supporter Steve Rendell, from Reading, ran the gruelling London Landmarks Half Marathon in March, raising £6,300 for the MPS Society in the little Bermondsey boy’s name.

After seeing the coverage, a friend of Mr Rendell’s who works at Reading police station contacted Harvey’s family to organise a VIP tour of the station – including putting the station’s Public Order officers through their paces.

“He was just gobsmacked, he had a big smile on his face. They treated him like a VIP,” said Harvey’s doting dad, Dean.

“It’s the things people will do for him, we can’t get our head around the amount of things that people still want to do for him.”

As well as the all-access tour of Reading police station on August 18, officers even gave little Harvey a personalised t-shirt, a lunchbox to take to school and a police teddy bear.

“A few weeks ago, Harvey visited TVP Reading after his family planned a surprise visit” said Thames Valley Police.

“He met our Dog Unit, ARV officers, had a tour of the station and put our Public Order officers to the test! We hope you had fun Harvey!”

In May this year the little Bermondsey boy and Millwall mascot was named Southwark’s Citizen of the Year, and was given a special award at a ceremony in Southwark Cathedral.

Teen to showcase sustainable designs at fashion week

A SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD Sacred Heart student from Peckham will showcase her sustainable fashion design at London Fashion week on Friday.

Silvy Fernandes is one of twenty designers, aged fifteen to nineteen, whose clothes will unveiled on the catwalk.

The group have been mentored by the charity FAD and its ‘fashion futures’ programme, which aims to encourage diversity in the fashion industry.

The designs include fabric that have been ‘upcycled’ and biodegradable materials.

Silvy said her design is inspired by the V&A museum’s Fashioned from Nature Exhibition.

“To emphasise the natural elements, I incorporated gathered sleeves as a replica of floating lanterns, and a frill to the skirt which came about from experimenting with calico, which I had unravelled from the form of a flower.

“Colour-wise, 71 per cent of the Earth’s surface became the primary colour of my garment, ‘ocean blue’, alongside a floral watercolour wash.”

MURDER OF MALCOLM MIDE-MADARIOLA

THE FATHER of a teenage boy stabbed to death while protecting his friend from a knife-wielding thug says he will always be proud of his son’s nobility and bravery in his final moments.

Seventeen-year-old Malcolm MideMadariola was a former Harris Academy student with a clutch of top GCSEs, described by his teachers as a role model “admired by all in our school community”.

He was murdered outside Clapham South tube station on November 2, 2018, after a group tried to start a fight with his friend.

In his attempt to make peace, the top student was butchered by another seventeen-year-old boy with a ‘zombie’ style hunting knife. He was rushed to hospital but died shortly after.

His murderer can now be named as Tammuz Brown, from Abbey Wood after a judge waived his anonymity when he turned eighteen.

Brown was sentenced at the Old Bailey last Friday, September 6, and given sixteen years behind bars.

The court heard how Brown and his friend were intent on fighting a friend of Malcom’s over a perceived slight.

While trying to protect his friend, Malcolm was stabbed three times, including once through the heart.

Brown had a previous conviction from August 2018 for possessing a similar weapon.

Treynae Campbell, 19, from Sydenham, was acquitted of murder and manslaughter but pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon. He will spend just 28 months at a young offenders’ institution.

Speaking to the News this week, Olumide Wole-Madariola said of the sentence: “The quantum of Malcom’s loss is not comparable to the number of years his killer is given.

“It could never be. But the integrity Malcolm had, the nobility of his personality, his sacrifice, is consolation for us.”

“For us as a family it is a pain we have to live with for the rest of our lives. We have to deal with it ourselves, manage and contain it. Our lives have been stopped for another eleven months.

“The judge did what she could do within the context of our justice system.

But Brown’s sentence isn’t a proper deterrent. Life should mean life.

“Brown had been convicted for carrying a knife but months later he

killed my son.”

Olumide hopes the foundation he has set up in his son’s memory can help other young people stay away from knife crime and follow his son’s hardworking example instead.

“There is so much pain, but the joy we live with is that Malcolm loved helping others, and he died helping others. I am very proud as a father.

“I feel pity for these kids as sometimes it is the system or their families that have let them down. At what point does a child become a bad child?

“In the next two weeks we are donating to some local schools and also exploring how we can work with victim support, to help other families like ours. I’m so grateful for the moral support and donations from everyone.”

The foundation aims to help families who are victims of knife crime and associated violence, focus on education and training for young people especially in IT, a passion of Malcolm’s, and set up young people as peer mentors to help others make the right choices in life.

Olumide is working closely with Malcolm’s Peckham secondary school, Peckham’s Harris Academy.

In the days after Malcolm’s death, executive principal Rebecca Hickey told the News: “He had a dedicated work ethic, was a deep and creative thinker and balanced a calm, mature manner with a wonderful sense of humour and an infectious smile.

“Malcolm was admired by all in our school community: teachers loved working with him; younger students looked up to him and his peers recognised him as a very special individual.

“To lose such a precious, innocent life at so young an age is beyond tragic.

Malcolm will be remembered always as a great ambassador of Harris Academy Peckham."

Speaking after the foundation launched in June, Olumide told the paper: “We want to try and re-engineer their hope and restart their life.

“Malcolm wanted to be a fashion designer, a property guru, he was recording music.

“He had a phenomenal smile, it was so infectious, there was nothing you could do to him, he was always smiling and so calm.

“Malcolm lived a normal life. He never drank, never smoked, and had never been late home without texting or calling us - that was Malcolm for you.

“On the day he died, when many would run away, he just took his ground and did what he thought was right.

“That bravery is what we want to bring out, peer pressure doesn’t have to change who you are.”

THE PARENTS of a two-year-old have told of their anger after he managed to escape unsupervised from a Bermondsey nursery near to a busy main road.

Mailys de la Guerrande and partner Guillaume Gliozzo’s son, Alois, slipped through a fence in the patio garden area on the German Kindergarten nursery on St James’s Road on August 13, without staff noticing for an estimated five minutes.

The little tot was found by a woman passer-by who, jointly with a policeman returned him to the nursery. The officer happened to be on the junction of St James’s Road and Jamaica Road dealing with a collision which had reportedly closed off traffic.

The incident sparked a visit from Ofsted the following day, who issued a Welfare Requirements Notice to the German-speaking nursery that it must ensure “children do not leave the premises unsupervised.”

Bettina Sebek, director of the nursery, told the News it acted swiftly on Ofsted’s recommendations and had immediately called a parents’ meeting to reassure others with children at the nursery.

“They say my son was not injured, but since then he has woken up every night screaming at 1am to 3am for mummy or daddy,” said Alois’s doting mum Mailys. “He isn’t sleeping like he used to.”

After the parents were called by nursery staff, “the policeman actually

phoned me before I got to the nursery,” said dad Guillaume, a commodities broker.

“He said Alois had been wandering around the street unattended, he said he was absolutely appalled by the situation.

“The nursery said it was five minutes, but it could have been ten, it could’ve been fifteen.”

“If there had been normal traffic on St James’s Road or Jamaica Road, he could have crossed the road, he could have been crushed by a lorry or a car,” added Mailys, an occupational therapist.

Alois’s parents said they were angry at how the nursery had handled the incident, accusing nursery staff of lacking empathy and having an ‘arrogant tone’ in meetings with them.

“I’m currently pregnant and at this early stage I don’t need that stress, but it didn’t make them anymore empathetic,” said Mailys.

But Ms Sebek responded: “We had a face-to-face meeting with the parents on the day, and we phoned them straightaway – we would not waste a minute.

“Of course they were worried and angry and upset, and we totally understand that. We acted swiftly – if something goes wrong we put it right.”

Among the changes the nursery has made are replacing the fence Alois slipped through, increasing the number of staff to supervise children in the outside ‘patio’ area and changing the exit buttons on the nursery doors, said the director.

THE ALLEGED killers of Joshua Boadu were filmed ‘in a celebratory mood’ at a recording studio hours after stabbing him to death in Bermondsey, the Old Bailey heard last week.

Denilson Davis, 21, Matthew Adebiyi, 19, and a 16-year-old who cannot be named, allegedly knifed 23-year-old Joshua Boadu (pictured) – affectionately known as ‘SJ’ – and sped away from the scene.

The court was told they were seen chasing the victim’s bronze VW Golf in a blue Peugeot driven by Davis at 5.55pm on 11 June last year, before pulling over and forcing him into a blind spot nearby.

Jacob Hallam, QC, prosecuting, said a witness described ‘SJ’ “being pushed up against a nearby parked car, surrounded by the three black males – one in front of him one either side.”

“The witness saw one of the males holding a knife, raising it Joshua and striking him from above.

“Joshua tried to stop the knife blows with the only thing he had available to him – which was his body.

“Joshua was a big, healthy and young man.

“Although he was able to escape from the scene of his attack and find safety and

shelter in a nearby property, the terrible wounds that he sustained in the attack were simply too much for him to bear and despite the intervention of the emergency services on the day and continued medical treatment provided for him at King’s College Hospital, he was declared brainstem dead on the 18 June last year.

“He was 23.”

Jacob Hallam, QC, continued: “Joshua was murdered by three men, who had arrived at the scene where he was eventually to lose his life, in a blue Peugeot 3008, a sort of hefty 4×4 motor vehicle.

“Two of those men are Denilson Davis, who was the driver of the vehicle and the youth who was one of the passengers in it – likely the front passenger.

“The third man was Matthew Adebiyi.

He has run away to Nigeria to escape, for a time at least, being held to account for his actions on that day. No doubt his time will come.

“Videos were found on Adebiyi’s mobile telephone which were recorded between 11.30 and midnight, capturing him and the youth together at a recording studio in the Peckham Rye area.

“Somebody was filming them, they were in a celebratory mood,” he said.

Mr Boadu, who had dreams of becoming an engineer, had sought refuge in a nearby house on Lucey Way from where he was taken to King’s College

Hospital by emergency services.

But after ten days on life support he was pronounced dead.

He had been stabbed to his chest, upper left shoulder and right arm and hand.

Davis was arrested at his home on Innes Street, Peckham on November 27.

but later admitted he was at the scene.

The 16-year-old was arrested on February 13 this year and also refused to answer police questions.

Davis, of Montgomery Avenue, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, and the 16-year-old, both deny murder.

The trial continues.

In a report, following the unannounced visit on August 29, the regulator said the nursery had taken all the necessary steps to comply with its notice.

However mum Mailys told the News she felt the nursery had ‘got away with it pretty easily’.

Alois, who turns three in November, has now been withdrawn from the nursery and will start a new nursery on October 1.

A family relative is being paid to come from France as a childminder in the meantime, said the tot’s parents.

Inquest to start into Ryan’s tragic death

AN INQUEST into the death of a Bermondsey teenager who tragically fell to his death earlier this year will take place this week.

Friends and family of popular Ryan O’Donnell, 20, believe that the freeclimber may have been attempting to jump for a nearby tree in the moments before his untimely death on 10 May on Bermondsey’s Marden Square.

They also believe the ‘free-loving spirit’ may have taken magic mushrooms prior to his death.

An inquest to establish what happened prior to the tragedy will take place on Friday, September 13 at Southwark Coroner’s Court at 1.30pm under the direction of coroner Phillip Barlow.

Previously speaking to the News from Ryan’s family home on the nearby Manor Estate, doting mum Pam described her son as an adventurous young man who loved climbing and cared deeply for everyone around him.

A fundraiser set up in memory of popular Ryan, who had been studying music at Morley College, raised nearly £8,000 to pay for the funeral costs.

Harman on her bid to be speaker of the House

BREXIT CRISIS

HARRIET HARMAN launched a campaign to run for speaker of the House of Commons this week, saying she could help “mend the relationship between people and parliament” after three years of Brexit wrangling.

The Camberwell and Peckham MP, who is the longest serving female MP, threw her hat into the ring on Tuesday morning, shortly after John Bercow’s resignation during parliament’s last sitting on Monday. If convention is followed, the next speaker would be a Labour member.

Harman told the News: “I’m putting myself forward because it is such a difficult time for parliament.

When we are divided, parliament has never been more important. I want to help mend the relationship between the people and parliament.”

In an email to her constituency party members sent on Tuesday morning, Harman attempted to assuage concerns the role would impact on her ability to serve her constituents.

ON THE night parliament was suspended until October, MP Neil Coyle described a National Unity Government as an “immediate and pressing need” to take control of Brexit, and shared his fears that an alliance between the Conservatives and Farage’s Brexit Party would lead to the rise of “cryptofacism” in the UK.

But his claims were blasted by the Brexit Party’s candidate for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, who says his party is “less racist than the EU”, and called for a general election – arguing MPs themselves are to blame for the prospect of No Deal after “voting against every option put to them”.

Coyle says he is clear that a No Deal Brexit could lead to the break-up of the UK and the “worst possible outcomes” for constituents and the economy at large, and has continued to back Remain and revoking Article 50 – or an extension.

Speaking to the News on Monday, The Labour MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark said: “We should all welcome a National Unity Government, this goes well and above party politics.

“We need it for a fixed-term until we have a general election” - he has previously backed Harriet Harman to lead a coalition to navigate the Brexit impasse.

In light of the turmoil in the Conservative party, and the commons, he described his fears that the lurch to the right and alliance with Farage’s Brexit Party could lead to the growth of “cryptofascism”.

He said: “We need to lower the temperature. The debate has turned toxic. I have fallen out with people in my own family over Brexit, and it is horrible, but I think the divisions in the country were always there.

“The idea that ours is a party of racism is ridiculous when we’ve doubled representation of ethnic minority MEPs. “What people neglect to mention is that there are many who people who view the EU as a racist institution. My wife is Chinese and it took so much for her to be able to live here. Afterward she said: ‘You are happy to have white Europeans but make it impossible for people like me’.

“We have taken away the rights of people from the Commonwealth and given them to people from Europe.

“Why is it that the descendants of people who fought for the Nazis have the

Speaking to the News she was firm that case work, supporting the community, and helping bereaved families are “not at all incompatible” with being Speaker, and the job would never take her away from those responsibilities.

Furthermore, she said she had the support of many of her constituents who value Britain’s democratic tradition, including those who have lived in unstable or undemocratic regimes.

“People recognise that Parliament is the foundation stone of our democracy,” she told the News.

“There are many people who have come to make their home in Camberwell and Peckham from around the world and they know how important a position our Parliament has in the world stage, as the mother of all Parliaments.”

Although Harman had been mooted as a possible leader of a National Unity Government, she has rubbished claims she had been

in talks with Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson to put herself forward over Jeremy Corbyn.

As Speaker, she would be unable to debate and, through paired voting, remain neutral. She would also have to step down as chair of the Human Rights Committee.

But as the second woman Speaker in Parliament’s 600-year history she could put her own stamp on proceedings: “Parliament has changed, we have over 200 women members. A woman in the chair would show that Parliament is very different from the old boys’ club it used to be,” she said.

“There is a lot of strife and there is a lot of anger. People will have their disagreements and their arguments, but they need to stop short of threats, violence and thuggery.”

But first she will have to win the vote and beat her rivals - including deputy speaker Lindsay Hoyle and avoid any threat of deselection come November, when her constituency party members will vote on whether or not she should automatically remain as a Labour candidate for her seat – or face open selection.

He believes the only way out of the Brexit quagmire is with a general election, and said he didn’t see Johnson’s move to prorogue parliament as an attack on democracy. “The suspension is the longest since the civil war, but three weeks of it would have been conference season anyway,” he said. “Of course he is doing it to cut down the amount of time they can debate, but that is within the rules.”

He accepts there is “no mandate for no deal right now – but that is why we need a general election”, and thinks the PM could have another card up his sleeve to get a poll in early October rather than after the 31st.

“We are where we are because MPs voted against every deal put to them, despite many standing on a platform of honouring the referendum result.

“We have to remember what was said before the referendum, from Osborne and all the rest, all the doom and gloom. There will of course be some disruption, but most of what was said hasn’t happened.”

NEARLY 23,000 residents across Southwark’s three Parliamentary constituencies had signed a petition urging the Government not to suspend Parliament by Tuesday, the day Parliament was prorogued.

“Parliament must not be prorogued or dissolved unless and until the Article 50 period has been sufficiently extended or the UK's intention to withdraw from the EU has been cancelled,” states the petition.

The highest amount of signatures came from Helen Hayes’s seat of Dulwich and West Norwood, which garnered 7,540 signatures against the idea of suspending Parliament.

Neil Coyle’s Bermondsey and Old Southwark seat saw over 6,900 signing the petition, while just over 7,000 signed it in Harriet Harman’s neighbouring constituency of Camberwell and Peckham.

Despite the petition gaining over 1.7million signatures nationally, and angry scenes among MPs in the

Commons, Parliament was suspended. However the Government responded on Monday night, minutes before the suspension, that prorogation and a general election was needed for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to have a clear mandate in the Brexit negotiations.

“Prorogation is a prerogative Act of the Crown, exercised on the advice of Ministers,” said the Government in its response.

“We must respect the referendum result and the UK will be leaving the EU on 31 October whatever the circumstances.”

The suspension will last until October 14. It comes after MPs also successfully passed a bill which would require Boris Johnson to ask the EU for an Article 50 extension to the current Brexit deadline of October 31.

Parliamentarians also blocked Mr Johnson from holding a snap general election in October, with MPs Helen Hayes and Harriet Harman not having a vote recorded - so thought to have abstained, on Monday’s motion, and Neil Coyle voting against.

King’s College Hospital thankfully dropped proposed plans of privatisation K ING’S COLLEGE Hospital holds a very special place in the hearts and minds of so many of my constituents in Southwark and Lambeth. My mum worked at King’s and both of my daughters were born there.

Our hospital has a brilliant staff team who do lifesaving and life enhancing work every day, but it has been badly let down by both the Tories and the Liberal Democrats in government. Since 2010 King’s has gone from having a balanced budget and meeting all of its key targets, to now having the largest debt and largest deficit of any hospital in the country, overspending by almost £180 million in the last financial year.

As a result of the dire financial position of the hospital it was proposed last year that the Capital, Estates and Facilities Management facilities would be privatised. The main reason for this was to avoid paying VAT. But any saving made

by King’s by not paying VAT would simply result in exactly the same amount of tax not being collected by the government, so overall this would not save the public purse a single penny, but only contribute to the further fragmentation of our NHS. I met with staff and union representatives who were desperately worried about these proposals and worked with them closely to challenge these privatisation plans. FAMILIES COME in all varieties – no more so than for the penguins at South Bank’s Sealife London.

Not only are penguin couple Marama and Rocky same-sex, they are also reportedly the first to raise a genderless chick at the aquarium.

Their Gentoo chick, which has not yet been named, is going to be raised as genderless, as staff at Sealife feel it is ‘completely natural’ for wild penguins not to exhibit gendered behaviour into adulthood.

The decision may not just ruffle the feathers of creatures at the aquarium, but among the public too.

However, staff at the popular attraction have

services transferred to KFM and the lack of staff engagement in the process. They were of course also worried about losing their place as employees in the NHS family.

I wrote to the chair of King’s College Hospital asking him to conduct a full review of the proposal and met face to face with the new Chief Executive to highlight my concerns and the those of local residents and hospital staff.

FILM CREWS have been spotted around the London Bridge and Bermondsey area, which we suspect are the latest season of a BBC TV series.

“I notice film crews in the Bermondsey area, as I approach London Bridge,” said one eagle-eyed local.

The crews seem likely to be for the BBC’s The Great British Sewing Bee, a spin-off of the everpopular Bake Off, in which amateur sewers

compete to be named Britain’s best.

Comedian Joe Lycett took over from Claudia Winkleman as the presenter for the most-recent series, which concluded in April this year.

As ‘bright lights’ have also been spotted on from the windows of the Tanner Street location where the series is filmed, it would appear series six is well underway.

clear that the battleground for the future of King’s – our precious local hospital – must be the fight for sustainable government funding, not the outsourcing of NHS staff to privatised companies.

The collapse of Carillion and the disruption to hospital workers across the country painfully demonstrated the dangers of outsourcing. Staff faced lost jobs and changes to their long-held contracts, months of insecurity and the loss of large chunks of their pension. Our hospitals must be run by the NHS for the public good, and we must say no to this creeping Tory privatisation.

Regularly, those prone to nostalgia wonder on social media whatever happened to ‘legendary’ Babs, among the station’s most regular voices on the air from the public.

However, sadly one person told LBC host Steve Allen several years ago that Babs may have passed away after he also posed the question of what happened to one of the station’s most prolific voices.

We think it is fair to back Harriet as madam speaker given her long history in Parliament

A

S THE longest serving woman MP in the House of Commons, who has dedicated her career to fighting for the rights of the most vulnerable in our society, Harriet Harman has the experience, moral compass and dogged determination to make a worthy speaker.

A sitting MP since 1982, she has held a raft of senior ministerial and cabinet positions, and even two brief stints as acting Labour leader.

A former solicitor general, she is currently chair of the Human Rights Joint Committee. In 2017, she held onto her seat with 78 per cent.

In a Commons rocked by defections, purges and resignations, Harman is one of the few grandees with decades’ worth of experience at the helm of government.

The high esteem she is held in by her colleagues is evident in the swirling rumours, rumours she has attempted to put down, that she could be the one to lead a National Unity Government in this time of constitutional crisis.

Harman has made it her life’s mission to campaign for women’s rights and help some of our most marginalised groups. But she pledges to remain neutral if voted in as speaker.

It’s a position she says is more vital than ever; both in the need to defend democracy, and the task of mending the fractured relationship between parliament and people, riven in the three years since the EU referendum.

That is not to say Harman hasn’t made errors of judgement. She voted to go to war in Iraq and, at least among her constituents, she is unlikely ever to live down that bulletproof jacket.

Although she strikes a more conciliatory and reasoned tone than some of her colleagues, there is fire there, too.

Regardless, she has shown herself to be deeply committed to her constituency and public service. Being an MP is a hard job that can come at huge personal cost.

Pregnant during her first election campaign, Harman was a trailblazer for many female MPs. It takes a certain type of person to stay in one job for 37 years under intense scrutiny, when many others stay a few terms and go onto highly paid, cushy jobs.

For all the reasons above, we’re backing Harriet as madam speaker.

New app puts consultation ‘in your pocket’

A NEW medications app, developed by staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’, has been launched to help the thousands of people taking medications for long-term health conditions.

MedTap provides answers to common medication questions such as when and how to take pills, what to do about side effects, how to reorder pills and the cost.

The app comes as national research shows that 10 days after being prescribed a medicine, more than half are not taking their medicines correctly.

The app allows users to watch videos on topics such as heart attacks and conditions that can cause a stroke.

More than 42,000 south Londoners are diagnosed with the most common irregular heartbeat condition, atrial fibrillation, which causes 1 in 4 strokes.

Gayle Campbell, senior cardiovascular pharmacist at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “Understandably, people can forget what NHS clinicians tell them about their medications during a clinic visit.

“They may be given a lot of information about side effects, how and when they should take their pills, all at once.

“We developed this app to give patients that information at their fingertips.”

The app is free to download on both Apple and Android.

Research summer school success

LOCAL GCSE students have attended a summer school coordinated by Guy’s and St Thomas’ and organised by King's Health Partners.

Staff and partner organisations teamed up to provide real life experience of health and research careers.

A session at Guy’s and St Thomas’ involved simulations of births, fractures and cardiac arrests. The students worked with the paediatric research team from

Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

They also found out about the research taking place across Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Alaae Brahime, 15, from St Saviour’s and St Olave’s School in Southwark, said: “It’s an unexplainable feeling to learn about a profession that is so necessary in our society and future. Now I can say I’ve been in the shoes of a doctor, medical researcher, midwife, nurse, surgeon and psychologist.”

KING’S COLLEGE Hospital had the highest number of organ donors in the whole country last year.

Forty-nine patients from King’s decided to give their or their children’s organs to help save others in 2018.

Some were used in transplants – including the 257 liver transplants that took place on site, also the highest number of any UK hospital.

The new figures were revealed during last week’s organ donation week, an annual campaign to encourage more people to make their wishes known.

Although the number of people who chose to donate is rising overall, there are consistently lower opt-in rates among black, Asian and other ethnic minority groups – meaning patients in need of transplants from these backgrounds wait significantly longer for suitable donations.

Organ matches with the right type of tissue and blood are more likely to come from people with similar ethnic backgrounds.

Faustino Miradi-Lutmba, from Croydon, saw his own daughter, six-yearold Faustina (pictured), die from a lung condition in 2018. She had been cared for at King’s.

The family chose to donate her organs after her death. He said: “Faustina was waiting for organs herself for a long time and we went through all the difficult

moments of a family waiting for organ transplantation.

“So when I was asked if Faustina's organs could be transplanted to other children who required them, I agreed.

“It was a difficult decision but we understood what other families may be going through.

“There is still a big gap and a huge sadness in our lives as we miss Faustina dearly.

“Our other children are growing up and asking about her, which is difficult.

However, life goes on but with memories of her dearly in our hearts.

“It's comforting to know that she has helped other children in need.

“We did not want to know who was getting the organs but amazing to know that part of her lives on and has helped sick children live a better life.”

Across the country last year, 400 people died while waiting for a transplant and another 777 were taken off the list as their health had deteriorated too far while waiting, with many dying shortly after.

From 2020, a new law will come into effect which opts-in patients to the donation register, meaning their organs will be donated unless they have chosen to opt-out.

But there are currently more than 6,000 people waiting for a transplant.

Popular SE3 fireworks under fire

THE BLACKHEATH Fireworks display could be cancelled because of government funding cuts, council officials in neighbouring Lewisham have said, writes Josh Salisbury...

The event, which attracts residents from across south east London, has been operating for over thirty years – but may not go ahead this year unless £20,000 is raised.

Due to take place on November 2 at 8pm, the display is billed as the capital’s largest.

“Lewisham Council has organised a free fireworks display for over 30 years,” said Councillor Jonathan Slater, Cabinet Member for Community Sector.

“With over 80,000 attendees, Blackheath Fireworks is London’s largest free fireworks display and we want residents to continue to enjoy it.

“However, the event is very expensive to run and the future of the fireworks is at risk due to government funding cuts.”

A crowdfunding drive has been launched by town hall bosses to keep the event going, with rewards including tote bags, tea towels and Christmas cards.

Donors will be automatically entered into a lottery to press the button and start the display, plus a VIP view for you and six friends. Last year’s ‘pyrotechnic extravaganza’ took place on Guy Fawkes’ night, and was free to borough residents, with those living outside paying a small fee.

On Saturday, September 21, Veolia is holding its annual Wonder Day event as part of Open House London - just in time for national Recycle Week.

Visitors will be able to tour the Southwark Integrated Waste Management Facility and find out exactly what happens to their recycling at every stage.

The 20 minute tours are given on a firstcome-first-served basis, and attract hundreds of recycling enthusiasts each year.

THE SPEED limit will be reduced to 20mph on key central London roads including main routes in Southwark, following a consultation.

TfL will impose the limit on the major routes it operates in central London including on Borough High Street, Great Dover Street and parts of Druid Street and Bermondsey Street.

The move comes after 128 people were killed in speed-related collisions on the capital’s roads between 2016 and 2018, and forms part of a bid to eradicate road deaths and serious injuries by 2041.

The changes are expected to come into force early next year. A 20mph limit on Tooley Street will also be enforced as part of the separate ‘Tooley Streets Healthy Streets’ project at the same time.

“Collisions occur more in central London

than elsewhere in London and it is also where higher numbers of people are walking, cycling and riding motorcycles,” said TfL, explaining why it is carrying out the move.

“This creates a high-risk road environment. Lower speeds will reduce the danger.”

Southwark Council welcomed the move in its response to the consultation, urging the body to “accelerate this important road safety [measure] on the rest of its roads.”

TfL is also planning to reduce the speed limit on a further 140km of roads it operates in inner-and-outer London by 2024.

Concerns were raised by respondents that the lower speed limit would lengthen journey times, and cause more pollution and congestion on busy inner-city London routes.

However, TfL responded that while some off-peak journeys might see a small

It added that research from Imperial College London showed a 20mph speed limit had no negative net impact on exhaust emissions.

A person who is hit by a car travelling at 30mph is up to five times likely to die than if they were hit by a car travelling at 20mph, it is estimated.

Historic oaks to be felled despite huge opposition

TWO HISTORIC oaks in Sydenham Hill Wood are likely to be felled by Southwark Council despite a petition to save them having the support of more than a thousand people.

Although Southwark's construction campaign is one of the most ambitious in the country, it will struggle to keep apace with the number of homes sold off under right-to-buy.

As the News has reported, the council has been stuck spending £12.5 million a year renting back former housing stock to use as temporary accommodation.

More than 1,300 homes have moved into private hands since 2012.

CO - OP STORE OPENS AT THE ELEPHANT SHOPPING CENTRE

THE NEW Co-op store opened in Elephant and Castle shopping centre on Friday.

The shop has taken over part of the former Tesco on the ground floor, and has a 'food-to-go' focus - with fresh fruit, ready-to-eat hot food and a bakery.

Landlords Delancey say they hope the shop will help sustain footfall in the

centre while its future and any demolition date remains uncertain.

Metro Tesco took the decision to permanently close its Elephant and Castle store after being closed for several weeks due to a mouse infestation.

The council says the two hundredyear-old trees must be chopped to make way for vital safety work on Cox’ Walk Footbridge, as the banks to the bridge have deteriorated, compromising its safety.

It says if work doesn’t take place the bridge will have to be closed – cutting off part of the green chain walking and cycling route.

To mitigate the loss, fifteen semimature oaks have already been planted nearby.

Environmentalists from Southwark have come together under the banner of ‘Save the Footbridge Oaks Campaign’, urging the council to reconsider.

They say work can take place without damaging the trees.

More than 1,500 have signed a petition so far, with one writing: “I’m appalled at this misjudgement by the council, felling trees should be avoided at all costs, they play a vital role in their local ecosystem which has built up over 100 years. Irreplaceable.”

Campaigners claim the best value option to repair the bridge has been ignored in favour of a “full blown excavation” - billed at £200,000. And, as the nesting season is over, the trees could be brought down any day now.

Southwark councillor Rebecca Lury, cabinet member for culture, leisure,

equalities and communities, said: “While the trees are not the principle cause of damage to the embankment, they are just 1.5 meters from the bridge and within the five meter clearance zone, needed for the safe construction of the essential work.

“Sadly, relocating the trees is unlikely to be viable on this occasion, as there is no guarantee of success.

“The process of undercutting and the severance of roots would need to take place over a number of years, before removing the trees with a tree spade, all at a great cost.

“We have undertaken a range of assessments and inspections in order to arrive at our proposed solution, which is the most practical and cost effective for the structure.”

But campaigners maintain the bridge could be made safe for less cost and without losing the oaks.

In a statement sent to the News on behalf of the campaign, a spokesperson said: “In April 2019 Southwark Council declared a climate emergency. But it is not enough for it to come up with a few headline commitments.

“Every decision in every department should have its impact on carbon emissions taken into account.

“Living trees lock up carbon, limiting its release as atmospheric CO2. Dead trees decompose releasing CO2.

“Unnecessary use of concrete and heavy machinery, and disposing of the old rubble, all have costs.

THE PARENTS of the boy allegedly thrown from the Tate Modern last month has said their boy is making “amazing progress.”

The six-year-old boy was seriously injured after falling from the Tate’s viewing platform on Sunday, August 4, landing on a fifth-floor roof.

A seventeen-year-old has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the incident.

In an update on their little boy’s condition posted on a fundraising page, the parents thanked everyone for their kind messages about their ‘incredible fighter’.

“He is an incredible fighter. Even if he can't speak or move his body for the moment, we now know for sure that he

understands us: he smiles and we saw him laughing several times since a couple of days when we were telling him some funny things or when we were reading to him some stories,” they said.

“It gives us lots of strength and hope, as much as the strength you, all of you, give us since the beginning with your kind messages.

“Thank you so much for what you do for our little boy and for us."

The boy, a French national visiting London with his family, reportedly sustained bleeding on the brain, fractured spine, arms and legs in the fall.

A crowd-funder for the boy to receive gold-standard medical care has raised over £68,000 after being set up by a wellwisher who was not known to the family.

“My family were unfortunately in a similar situation five years ago when my brother suffered a similar accident.

“I have a young son myself, I am a nurse, and having been through the experience of this and understanding how difficult it is has been the driving force behind showing support to this family through such a tragic time.”

The defendant has been remanded in custody accused of attempted murder ahead of a possible trial to take place in early 2020.

For legal reasons, neither the alleged attacker nor the victim can be named.

A £400,000 refurb at The Bridge Lounge on Tooley Street will see the boozer re-open in mid-September under a new name.

The overhaul, which began on August 5, will see the pub become The Two Bridges, alongside a new bar being installed, a 72inch TV and an eighty-person seating area to cater for more private functions.

New Yorkers Joseph ‘Felix’ Marcuccio and Elliot Swift will be taking on the pub alongside their partners, both of whom will live above the pub. Seven new jobs will be created by the refurb.

“We both have worked in hospitality in New York and Elliot has worked in number of pubs in London including most recently managing a pub in New Cross,” said Felix.

“I’ve lived in nearby Shadwell for the last two years and so am familiar with the neighbourhood and the pub. So when the opportunity to take on The Two Bridges came up, we leapt at the chance.”

The publicans pledge that the refurb will see The Two Bridges have a further fifty seats downstairs for casual dining and a large video wall to allow them to show sports for the first time.

“We’re really excited to be running a traditional old-style pub in such as fantastic are and to be moving to the area,” added Felix.

“We want to become part of the community, get involved in local events and following the refurbishment make the pub a home from home where people from all different backgrounds and ages can come together.”

The boozer, which will be open daily, aims to serve ‘premium and craft beers and ciders’ alongside ‘good quality pub classics’ like fish and chips, burgers and salads.

“The Two Bridges is just 250 metres from Tower Bridge and the closest pub to City Hall and so is in a fantastic location to capitalise on tourism, trade from local businesses and nearby residents,” added Dugald Macer, Star Pubs & Bars Regional Operations Director, which is Heineken’s pubs arm.

The Underdog cult status within London’s music scene.

Stop by their gallery-bar next time you’re near Crucifix Lane to take in works by some of contemporary art’s most exciting up-and-coming names, and stick around for live music that’s as interesting as the exhibitions on show...

...and everyone loves The Dog Show Stroll around Bermondsey and one thing’s for sure: we’ve got some seriously adorable pooches in residence.

The Festival’s annual Dog Show, organised with pedigree aplomb by leather collar and lathery grooming company Holly & Lil, returns to rule on the area’s best this year. Gail Porter is this year’s celebrity judge, ably assisted by the Dulux Dog himself. Be still, my beating paint samples.

Anyone can enter their prize-hopeful pooch across a series of categories, from Best Pedigree, to Best Mash Up, to the Gus & Nelly Award for “anything goes” - and they’re really not joking - all in the hope of pawing the ultimate prize: Best in Show. At stake is a grand prize of £75 towards a Holly & Lil collar of your choice, smaller prizes for all runners up and the love of an entire borough for particularly heart-stealing furry heroes.

Crufts, eat your heart out.

Within that time, Sas, and Monty’s experience of growing up together in Belfast exposes the reality of their situation. These two men, invested with little opportunity in life, revert to playing the ‘game’, a strategy that takes them into a world of make believe, where they can remain boyish and avoid the harsh reality of a male adult-hood built on poor housing, low paid jobs and low expectations. Bonded by their years together they may be, but a dark secret from the past exposes male brutality, subsequently fracturing the friendship and unveiling the mental and physical impact on victim, by-stander and perpetrator.

Opting to place Sas(Brendan Quinn) and Monty(Barry Calvert) in a boxing ring throughout allowed them to deal with weighty issues whilst reminding us that violence always permeates the arenas where deprivation and repression exist.

Conveying the message further with the use of captions lends the production a necessary hollowness, mirroring the disconnect felt by the protagonists as they struggle to know who they are and what to do with their lives. When Monty declares, ’I never know what to do with a girl’, it’s appar-ent he’s no clearer about romantic relationships, Hearing of promising outcomes for past friends,

they remain stuck in Jade City. Masculinity has relegated them to empty roles where they are strangers to themselves. Vulnerable, they live in a so-ciety where Sas tells us, ‘They don’t give housing to people like us single men’.

This play highlights how working-class single men are left behind, and in Ireland, a country with high male to female suicide, Jade City is a potent reminder of the impact of physical, mental and material deprivation.

Calvert and Quinn give energetic, visceral

performances, taking the audience with them to a night club, to the take-away, and also back to their childhood. Fittingly, we never really get to know these two characters who don’t know themselves.

Weighty issues - good watch.

bedsit land. He delivered his part with aching vulnerability. Peta then rescues Chantelle (Yana Penrose) from a drunken argument with her partner.

Chantelle, with the hangover from hell, has a bubbly character and certain verve, but these two scenes could have done with editing.

As the interval loomed a dreamlike sequence arrived with Peta in an aquarium, the place she has asked each ‘guest’ to visit with her. This felt a little confusing and I wasn’t quite sure if she was lonely, sad or had other issues.

Act Two saw Michelle Collins as neighbour Marion lift the energy. Again, like the other scenarios, Marion has her own story to tell. Collins gave a powerful performance as someone who wants to help and look after Peta, who has now fallen down the stairs drunk. Humming Peta to sleep felt like a moving end to this episode and the connection worked well.

Finally, Colin turns up. Peta’s partner, who’s beside himself with anger and rage at her disappearance. Nigel Boyle plays this part with grit

and realism – it’s a very heavy and real scene. There was a great line that seemed lost, when he relays to Peta that he saw her drunk father and he had given him 50p for her. It ended here with no final resolution, but why should it?

Peta is the thread that holds this piece together and is on stage throughout. Even so, my issue with the play is that I felt it should have worked but something was missing - or I was being led astray? I couldn’t empathise with Peta and that caused me not to care. Maybe I’ve just got compassion fatigue and am still trying to figure it out!

Sound performances, some funny and touching scenes but at two hours twenty minutes, just too long!

Is this how love is?

IN A revival of Chloe Moss’s 2004 play How Love is Spelt, we find 20 year old Peta in London. Living in a run down bedsit (carpet stains included), Peta is looking for friendship, romance and adventure and doesn’t find in a succession of short relationships and drunken nights, writes Susan Hallissey.

It’s the morning after as Joe emerges from the duvet on the sofa bed they shared. This is one of the most vibrant and energetic scenes purely down to the hilarious Benjamin O’Mahony as Joe. He would love to see Peta again, however, Peta (Larner Wallace-Taylor) is not so keen. Joe sitting in the bed willing Peta to leave her chair and join him is played with a measured touch of desperation. When things go wrong he is soon gone! This scene was full of laughter and pathos and seemed a promising start.

Nevertheless, the next two scenes seemed to lack in drive – they were also a slightly long and a little repetitive.

The strange case of a new adaptation

THIS NEW adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Victorian Gothic, The Strange Case of Jekyll & Hyde, has been reset one year henceforth, a Utopian future where Trump has been impeached for corruption, writes Michael Holland...

Opening in the week when Boris Johnson has done more harm to the Conservative-DUP Alliance than all the other parties put together, was a timely piece of luck. Alas, for me, it was all a strange case of WTF! A convoluted concoction to confuse and confound.

Basically, in the wake of yet another mass shooting, Mayor Henry Jekyll, a young liberal, announces his candidacy to run for the U.S. presidency with Mister Edward Hyde as his running mate, and a promise to get guns off the streets. But is he too good to be true? What is he hiding…? So far so good.

After that I kind of got lost in the maelstrom of issues that kept getting dropped into the mix: LBGTQ, paedophilia, abortion, drugs, Black Lives Matter and Green issues. Add to that a small cast playing everyone involved, with barely a change of costume, plus, continually going back and forth in time, is it any wonder I lost the plot? I’ll have a drop of what you’re having, Henry… When the interval came I was so baffled I thought it was the end.

I was jarred, too, by how the contemporary story was told and delivered melodramatically. The mock-Gothic had a comedic value which, I felt, didn’t fit as this was not supposed to be a comedy.

Perhaps writer-director Ross McGregor should have gone the whole way and aimed it at a 21st century audience laughing at the overacting Victorians. That, I could have come to like.

I love the thirteen-time Off West End AwardNominated Arrows & Traps Theatre and always enjoy seeing the regulars in the troupe bring their skills to the stage, but not this time. I felt that by trying to say too much merely made this Jekyll & Hyde unnecessarily more complicated. On the plus side, Arrows & Traps continually draw great performances from its cast, and the diaphanous screen that became a TV set, amongst other things, was brilliant for Jekyll’s transition from good to evil and became the highlight for me.

I’m sure there’s an analogy to be drawn from this adaptation and the current evil pairing of Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings, which I began thinking was the point, but then realised nothing could turn the reality of current politics into jokey melodrama.

Where to start and How the system works THE DIFFICULTIES faced each year deciding which secondary school to apply to for your child remains one of the biggest education decisions for parents and carers, writes Kevin Quinn...

You can’t expect to name a secondary school and assume that your child will automatically be offered a place.

It is simply a case of listing the schools you prefer and awaiting the outcome of the allocation process.

It is vital that you get the order of preferences right on your child’s primary to secondary transfer application. You may be tempted to name just one school on the online application as it is the only school you want for your child. However, there are no guarantees that your child will be offered this school. To increase the chances of your child being offered a preferred school, we strongly advise you to list up to six preferences on their application.

It is all too easy just to go by hearsay and reputations - visit the schools for yourself. A school that may never have been in your mind before could offer subjects or have specialist facilities that would better suit your child more than the school that was originally top of your list.

There are various types of secondary schools to choose from including academies, voluntary aided, foundation, free and independent schools. And it is here where the oversubscription criteria vary. It is important you fully understand the oversubscription criteria and match them to your own circumstances. Some schools are heavily oversubscribed, with hundreds applying for just 120 – 300 places.

When you go to an open day, make sure you find out how many applications the school usually receives - this information will also be printed in the Starting Secondary school in Southwark 2019/2020 brochure and the

Starting secondary school in Lambeth 2020/21 booklet.

The more people who apply for a school for their children, the bigger the risk that your child might not be offered a place at that school. Armed with this knowledge, you should be better placed to put your preferences down.

Do use all six preferences - however, you need to be wary about only choosing schools which are heavily over-subscribed. You should name your first preference school on the application, but also list preferences where your child has a realistic chance of being offered a place.

As the local paper, we have often seen situations where parents and carers have only listed oversubscribed schools as preferences on their child’s application and consequently have not been offered a place at any of them. So, from being in a position where they had the luxury of being able to name preferred schools, they were left feeling like they had no option but to accept the alternative school they had been allocated by the local authority - this is likely to be the nearest school to the child’s home which has a vacancy. This offer of a school place will remain available unless the local authority is notified of any other suitable alternative arrangement for education that has been made for their child.

Applying for secondary schools can be emotionally difficult. It is such a vital decision for your child’s future. If your child is in Year 6 and currently attending one of Southwark’s or Lambeth’s primary schools, you will receive further information from your child’s school.

The online application process gets rid of the paperwork and is available to use 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The site allows users to save, continue or make changes to their application, right up until the closing date and your details are safe and secure. You can of course print a copy of your application to keep and can also view the outcome online. The closing date to submit the online application is 31 October 2019 by 11.59pm.

You also need to ensure that you submit a school Supplementary Information Form (SIF) to the schools you apply for that need these, to the school by their deadline. These ask for further information, such as religious observance or regarding school specialisms. Where a school requires your child to sit an admissions banding test, it is vital that they sit the test.

Children will be invited to the test once a SIF has been received at the school.

Failure to provide a SIF to the school by their deadline and your child sitting a banding test, where these are needed, may significantly reduce the chances of your child being offered a place at a school on your application.

Health and Care Plan follow a different admissions process and parents and carers must contact the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Team within their local authority for further advice.

Once you have made your preferences and submitted your online application by the closing date, your application will be processed. If you have successfully submitted your online application before the closing date, you will be able to view the results of your application on the eAdmissions website (www.eadmissions.org.uk) during the evening of 2 March 2020. You will also be sent an email in the evening of 2 March 2020 which will contain information on what to do next.

If it was not possible to offer a place at any of your preferred schools, then the School Admissions Team will allocate your child an alternative secondary school. This is likely to be the nearest school to your child’s home which has a vacancy. You also have the right to appeal against the decision not to offer your child a place at a preferred school. The email containing the outcome of your child’s application will include information about how to

appeal.

If it has not been possible to offer a place at any schools named as a higher preference on your child’s application, your child’s name will automatically be added to the waiting lists of these schools. You may also ask for your child’s name to be added to the waiting list of any out of borough schools listed on your application. Please contact the local authority the school is located in for further information.

If your child has been offered a secondary school place, you have until 16 March 2020 to respond to this offer. For those that live in Southwark, if the School Admissions Team do not hear from you by this date, your offer will automatically be accepted and your child’s details forwarded to the allocated school. If you live in Lambeth, the School Admissions Team require all offers to be responded to, ie accepting these by 16 March 2020.

Only if you reject the offer and also provide details of any alternative arrangement you have made for your child’s education, will your child’s place be withdrawn and offered to the next child on the school’s waiting list.

TWO OF Millwall Lionesses’ new signings this summer are looking forward to the challenge of helping the club back up through the leagues from the sixth tier.

Ruby Snowden and Maddie Wright joined Lionesses under new boss Colin Reid.

Speaking to the press for the first time before the start of the season, both players understood the task that awaited them in a Millwall shirt. “It’s going to be a challenge, we’re a new team and we have only just got together so that is a challenge in itself,” Snowden said.

“We’re still going in there even though it’s a lower level believing it is going to be difficult and it’s going to be a challenge for us. We’re not complacent.”

Snowden, who will wear the captain’s armband this season, has played for

Charlton, Tottenham and Leyton Orient in her career to date. She admitted she was surprised when she found out she would lead the side.

She said: “Yeah, I was quite shocked, actually, but honoured. It’s a great bunch of girls, they’re so lovely. When we step out on the pitch we all have the role of bigging each other up, motivating and encouraging everyone to do the best we can do this season.”

This will be the first season, along with a number of her team-mates, that she will play regular first-team football. “It’s exciting, it’s a challenge, a bit different obviously from when I was at Spurs and Charlton. I was always either training with the first team but playing games for the reserves. So it’s a different game, I’m stepping it up a level but I’m looking forward to it.”

Defender Wright, meanwhile, feels the team have got significant potential.

“We will have to manage expectations, the fans are so supportive, they are going

to be supportive no matter what,” she said. “We have seen that already after being here a few weeks, it’s been unbelievable.

“Of course we want to manage expectations, but we want to make them [the fans] as proud as we can. The team has got so much potential and we both believe that we’re going to leave everything on the pitch, and hopefully walk out most weekends with a win.”

Full-back Wright also believes that there will be a target on their backs because of their name. “When you have got such a big name as Millwall in your league, of course you’re going to want to beat them, especially in our league. All the teams are going to want to come at us with the best that they’ve got, and they are going to want to beat us.

“I think the girls know that and no matter what team we’re playing we’re going to be giving it 100 per cent%.

Both players were quick to praise

Reid and are excited about the style of play that he wants to implement at the club.

“I think the way Colin wants to play is a very professional way,” Wright said.

“It’s the way that the women in the very top league play, we want to aspire to do that.”

Snowden added: “It’s something I have always enjoyed [playing out from the back]. You get some coaches and some managers who tell you to hoof the ball from the back, but he likes to play it from the back and is quite creative with his play. I enjoy that.”

Wright emphasised how proud she and the rest of the squad feel representing Millwall. “I think I speak on behalf of

toss, and Chris Purshouse and skipper Ed Stolle got off to a rapid start against a wayward opening attack. The pair put on 61 for the first wicket in eleven overs, with Purshouse making the early running. But this proved to be a false dawn as skipper Kit Winder brought himself on and struck with his first two deliveries, having Stolle leg before for 17 and Matt Marfani caught behind first ball.

Left-arm spinner Rory Sale came on at the other end and the pair imposed such restraint that only 22 runs came from the next 13 overs, with Winder taking two more wickets and Sale getting the vital wicket of Purshouse, lbw having made 45 off 68 balls.

Dulwich had lost five wickets for just 22 runs to falter to 83-5 in the 24th over. The pair bowled their ten overs

straight through to finish with 4-19 and 1-25 respectively.

Jon Lodwick and keeper Will Bancroft also found scoring difficult, needing 15 overs to add 36 for the sixth wicket before Bancroft was stumped for 21 and Lodwick run out two overs later for 18 to make it 127-7 in the 41st over.

Two wickets off successive balls for James Woodroff reduced them to 1479 after 44.3 overs, and It was left to Simon Harwood to mount an assault which saw 29 runs come from the last 5.3 overs, and 20 from the last two.

Harwood was unbeaten with 38 off 34 balls, while Samir Hussain gave him good support with 4 off 11, as Dulwich closed on 176-9 after their 50 overs.

Dulwich needed an early wicket, but Lodwick and Hussain were unable

to break through as keeper George Wayman went for his shots from the start. Stolle turned to the left arm spin of Elliot Miles and was rewarded when he struck in his first over to make it 35-1 in the tenth. Damon Ridgeway then helped Wayman add 31 for the second wicket before Salaar Waqar bowled him for 11.

Wayman was joined by Sam Brandon, and the pair added 56 in eight overs before Wayman was well caught by Nick Gunning off Miles, having made 80 off 69 balls, out of a total of 122. Brandon continued the assault in company with Henry Goodwin to take the score to 147-3 after 30 overs.

At this point Harwood, who had earlier come off after just one over after being hit for 14 by Wayman, now

all the girls to say that we are honoured to play with the Millwall badge, it’s amazing.

DULWICH’S HOPES of promotion from Division 2 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship ended in disappointment as they lost by three wickets at Bank of England last weekend, while chief rivals Stoke D’Abernon easily defeated Farnham.

One wicket for Khan and two more for Harwood saw three wickets go down in successive overs to reduce Bank to 162-7. The next five overs produced just one run, but the end of Khan’s spell relieved the pressure and Bank advanced to a three wicket victory off the first ball of the 45th over.

Dulwich thus slip one place to finish fourth. This is the highest they have achieved in six seasons in Division 2, and they will be looking to build on this and launch another promotion bid next season.

DULWICH HAMLET let a halftime lead slip at Braintree Town last Saturday as they fell to a second consecutive defeat in National League South to drop to twelfth in the table.

Dulwich were up 1-0 at the break, thanks to Danny Mills’ nineteenthminute strike but that was cancelled out in the second half by goals from Ade Cole and Alfie Cerulli.

Mills opened the scoring with a closerange finish, after bringing down Jack Connors’ deft free-kick into the box. It was the striker’s fifth goal of the season for Dulwich.

Braintree made a half-time change that brought instant impact, with Cerulli replacing former Hamlet midfielder Jason Banton. Femi Akinwande had the ball in the back of the net just 30 seconds after the restart but it was ruled out for offside.

It did not take long for Braintree to find the goal again for real. Spirited midfielder Cole cut inside for the home team and hit a terrific strike into the top corner, past Ashley MaynardBrewer, to level the score-line.

The open weight category often produces some surprises with the heavyweight men not always cleaning up. Downey battled his way to the semi-final against players of nearly double his body weight. He narrowly missed out on a slot in the final but came away with a bronze in the men’s open weight. Such was the medal and trophy haul at the end of the day that Tokei will now need a bigger trophy cabinet.

Lewis White and Dom Vose but neither were able to change the final result.

Vose came closest to finding an equaliser late in stoppage-time, when

he flashed a header across the face of goal that would have needed just the faintest of touches to have taken it over the line.

Dulwich have now gone four games without a win and there is a huge onus on the team to bounce back with a result this Saturday, when they take on Hungerford Town at Champion Hill at 3pm.

In other news, Dulwich have signed experienced defender Marvin McCoy, who was at Aldershot Town last season.

McCoy had been training with Dulwich over the summer and has now formally signed with the club. The Antigua and Barbuda International has spent time at Wycombe Wanderers and York City, amassing over 130 appearances in the Football League.

“Marvin is a good addition to our squad. He brings a wealth of experience and is able to play at both centre-half and right-back,” said Rose about the defender, who made his debut against Braintree.

“He has spent the past few weeks with us, keeping his fitness up while we got the opportunity to get a deal agreed.”

Additionally, Dulwich Hamlet under18s enjoyed a positive result in the FA Youth Cup preliminary round last week as they defeated Maidstone 6-3 in a high-scoring affair at the Gallagher Stadium. Breno Carmago in particular impressed, with four goals for the Hamlet.

Dulwich will play Cray Valley PM in the next round of the competition.

AFTER SATURDAY’s game at Blackburn Rovers, Connor Mahoney won’t have far to walk to arrive home.

As long as Millwall don’t put in a performance at Ewood Park that will see them dragged into the training ground on Sunday, Mahoney will be able to spend some time with his family at the weekend.

Lions boss Neil Harris often allows players with northern ties to come back to London a little bit later after games in that part of the country.

“You can see my house from the ground,” Mahoney said, “which is handy for me because I can just walk back to my parents’ place after the

game.

“Hopefully we’ll get three points and we’ll have Sunday off.”

Mahoney is going back to the club where he fulfilled a lifelong dream when he joined the 1994-95 Premiership champions from Accrington Stanley in December 2013.

Just weeks later, he became the thirdyoungest player to make his senior debut for Rovers, when he came on as an 89th-minute substitute in a 5-0 FA Cup third-round replay defeat at Manchester City aged sixteen years and 337 days.

“I’m a Blackburn fan. All my family are Blackburn fans. All my friends are Blackburn fans,” Mahoney revealed. “I grew up going there, I had a season ticket. I was a ball boy. Then obviously playing for the first team was a dream come true.

Like most dreams, reality sets in and after his debut he didn’t play for Rovers’ first team for more than two years. He finally made his league debut in April 2016, a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest, but then didn’t feature again until the following January.

It was only at the end of the 2016-17 season, under current boss Tony Mowbray, who had taken over in February, that Mahoney finally became a regular, starting the last three league games.

But Rovers were relegated from the Championship, creating uncertainly

over a number of their squad, including Mahoney who eventually left for Bournemouth in the closed season.

“My contract was ending in the summer and I wanted to sign fresh terms,” Mahoney explained. “They wouldn’t do that because they were in a relegation battle.

“I had broken through in the January and started playing but still wasn’t being offered a contract. It was a bit upsetting as a player and as a fan that they weren’t showing a bit of faith in me.

“I was worried. I probably would have stayed there if they had offered me a contract earlier. But that didn’t happen.

At the end of the season they did put fresh terms on the table, but it didn’t show much belief in me. So I found somewhere else to go.

“It was a massive decision for me and my family to leave Rovers, but at the time there wasn’t much for me there.

People don’t know but behind the scenes it wasn’t a good set-up.”

Despite how it ended, Mahoney has a lot of time for Mowbray. “I’m excited to go back at the weekend. I get along well with the manager there, I think he’s an amazing manager, an amazing guy.

It was nice to meet him when I went back there (with Birmingham last season) and I wish the club nothing but success in the future.

“At the end of the day my family and my friends know the reasons why I didn’t stay there.

“There was the option to leave and looking back now I didn’t get as much football as I’d have liked [at Bournemouth] but you’ve got to take chances when they come to you at such a young age like that. Things happen for a reason.”

Mahoney spent two seasons at Bournemouth, including loan spells at Barnsley and Birmingham. But after just two senior Cherries appearances he knew it was time to move on again.

He joined Millwall for an undisclosed fee in the summer, and assisted goals for Jed Wallace and Matt Smith as the side lost just once in six league games in August.

But he admitted it has been a challenge adjusting to the different style of play, the Lions much more direct compared to Eddie Howe’s possession-based side.

“It has been difficult,” he said.

“Obviously I’m going to tackle, but I’m a technical player, I want to get on the ball, create and find pockets of space.

We’ve got players that can do that as well so it’s about finding the right balance of when to go long and when to relax and show our quality on the ball, which I think we should do more of this season.

“Two assists in the first month. We’ve had some tough away games where I’ve not seen much of the ball. I think this team can play a bit more football.

We’ve got some very good technical players but obviously we’ve got some big lads up there so we need to get the ball in the box.

“That’s what we’re going to do on Saturday, get the ball in the box and hopefully we can get an early goal and go from there.

“I think nine points from a very tough six games is a positive and we go into Saturday full of confidence.

Hopefully we’ll pick up more points this month and after it we’ll be sitting around mid-table.”

NEIL HARRIS is pleased with Millwall’s defensive resilience this season – but has been working with the squad during the international break on increasing their attacking output.

Apart from the 4-0 defeat at Fulham, the Lions conceded just one goal from open play in their other five league games, in their 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough. The concern is that only one of their five league goals this season has not come from a set-piece, Jed Wallace’s volley on the opening day against Preston.

Millwall feel they should have thirteen points from six games rather than nine, after having thirteen efforts on goal against both Boro and Hull.

“It’s a real positive thinking we should have won those games. We felt we were better than those opponents,” Harris said.

“It’s just trying to build that quality in the final third. We’re not a team that’s going to struggle to get the ball from box to box, we can play and get the ball forward quickly. We can play direct to a striker or in the channel, but we can

also build through midfield or out wide.

“Getting there is not a problem. The problem at Boro was we weren’t clinical in the final third. Smithy [Matt Smith] didn’t have a great day in front of goal to complete his all-round performance in the game. If we were more clinical in the box we would have won the game comfortably.

“Against Hull I felt we turned down too many opportunities to cross the ball.

We didn’t go that extra yard in and around the penalty area to create better options and get the ball in the box. That was the frustration because the dominance we had in possession we didn’t translate into creating chances.

“We’ve worked on the boys being positive in the final third. We’ve got to make sure we’ve got enough bodies and movement in the box, and make sure we put the right balls in the box.

“It’s obviously important to keep clean sheets but creating chances and scoring goals is the hardest part of the game. We’re trying to add that.

“The transition period we were in over the summer we’ll continue to be in for a few months.

“Without the ball, apart from against Fulham when they were just

exceptional against us, we’ve been very good. We’ve been really hard to break down. It’s just adding those moments in the final third, to be cohesive and try and get that fluidity.

It’s a work-in-progress and it will continue to be like that.

“We have to keep working on it on the training pitch. The lads have been great, desperate to learn and desperate to be better.

“Ultimately 20 goals a season from players that can create and score those goals costs a hell of a lot of money. So we’ve got to keep progressing our players and keep working with them to be better. The players are buying into it really well.”

Tony Mowbray’s Blackburn are seventeenth in the table, two points behind twelfth-placed Millwall. Rovers brought in Stewart Downing and Bradley Johnson on free transfers in the summer, and spent £5million on striker Sam Gallagher from Southampton.

Harris added: “Tony’s a very experienced manager and gets his team playing with a mix between good football and direct play.

“He’s got some good players. They came up with a competitive budget and did well last year in the league.

“Tony’s tried to evolve his team a little bit over the summer, he’s let people go and brought some in, they have a big squad of players at this level to try to be competitive.

“It’s a tough fixture away from home.

We’re looking forward to it, it should be an excellent game. Blackburn play high-tempo football, get after the ball and move it quickly.

“Bradley Dack off the front is a super player. We have to make sure we’re at our best because they are a team that can cause you problems at this level.”

Meanwhile, Jiri Skalak is Millwall’s only injury concern. The Czech Republic international is likely to miss the game with a heel injury.

Elliott will be with Millwall until at least January, but is currently the fifth-choice striker at the club behind Matt Smith, Tom Bradshaw, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Aiden O’Brien.

Harris has urged Elliott, who is still not fully match fit despite playing in the EFL Cup against Oxford, to take his first-team chance if he gets one.

“Competition for that area is huge with Smithy playing so well, Jon Dadi hitting form and fitness, Bradders with his importance and the way he plays,” Harris said.

“I’ve used Aiden more centrally as well but have no problem using him in any of the three positions behind the striker.

“Tom is pigeonholed in terms of what he can do. He is an out-and-out target man that can be a nuisance.

He knows there is competition for places and that he will have to be patient for his opportunity.

“He made the decision that he wanted to stay and fight for his place, the right opportunity for him to go on loan didn’t come up. We decided that we wanted him to stay and be part of it.

“That’s fine from our perspective in the sense that we had a 20-man squad and Tom makes it a 21. He knows exactly where I’m at and where he’s at within the group.

“He’s still not up to speed, fitnesswise, he’s still behind everyone else. But when he’s fit and available he can have a part to play here.

“He is a specialist in what he does, he’s a nuisance and a handful.

If the opportunity arises for him it’s up to him to take it.”

Meanwhile, Harris explained why Mahlon Romeo wasn’t on international duty with Antigua and Barbuda for their CONCACAF Nations League games against Jamaica and Aruba.

“Mahlon’s had various issues, to be honest,” Harris said. “Mahlon played a lot of minutes in preseason, partly due to us being short in that position.

“He was carrying a few knocks and we went into the start of the season without Jason McCarthy up to full fitness.

“Mahlon had to play more football than we anticipated.

“He should be fine for the weekend, but we made the decision along with Antigua and Barbuda that Mahlon needed time off last week.

“He didn’t take part in training at times. We felt it might be more beneficial for him to try and recover and be fit for future international camps.”

MILLWALL have begun work on expanding player recruitment into overseas markets – with Scandinavian and German leagues set to be initial focuses of scouting attention.

Since Neil Harris took over as boss in 2015, the Lions have signed first-team players exclusively from English leagues.

The last time Millwall signed a player for their senior squad from abroad was when Ian Hollaway brought in Stefan Maierhofer on a free transfer in 2015 after the striker’s spell with German side Cologne.

Millwall haven’t paid a transfer fee to a foreign club since the £100,000 spent on Hameur Bouazza from AC ArlesAvignon in France in 2011. The winger had, however, previously played in England for Watford, Fulham and Blackpool.

The Lions’ head of recruitment, Alex Aldridge, speaking to this paper, revealed plans are being put in place to target foreign leagues, but not at the expense of “compromising” the recruitment process for UK-based players.

Millwall appear to have made some astute signings in the last transfer window, with players such as Matt Smith and Connor Mahoney, out of favour at QPR and Bournemouth, impressing in the first month of the season. The club’s spending on seven permanent signings in the summer came in at under £3million.

Millwall had built up a large dossier of information over several years on Smith and Mahoney, while they also monitored Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Jason McCarthy over a number of transfer windows.

Millwall will make sure they don’t weaken their recruitment at home as they expand into other markets.

“The only reason that we haven’t done that previously was because we didn’t want to compromise the level of detail and the resources that we put into scouting players domestically,” Aldridge said.

“At some point it is a question of resources, the number of staff, the number of scouts, the number of man hours, if you like.

“The club have committed to giving us more of that so we can look in other markets but without compromising what we do here. That wouldn’t be a sensible compromise to make.

“We want to add to and build on what we’ve got, rather than take away from what we’ve got, and give us something else elsewhere.

“Over the summer we made the first steps to getting set up. That work has already started on looking at particular markets and leagues and educating ourselves so that we can start to understand different markets and different players, and over time introduce those players into the process that we have had going for the last four or five years domestically.

“Without mentioning specifics, we’ve made a conscious decision to focus on particular territories that we think will be the best match for Millwall. That might be based on the style of the league, culturally, to a degree, in terms of the

players that we think might be best suited to moving to England.

“For example, we might be looking at leagues where a lot of the players speak English. Again, if we try to cover the whole of Europe we would cover loads, but with no depth. We’d end up spreading ourselves far too thinly.

“We’re going to stick to four or five leagues in particular that we think match up best with what we want and soak up as much as we can from those.

“We’ll probably then review that in a year’s time and see whether it was a sensible move or not.

“My gut feeling is that if we didn’t put some barriers, if you like, or stop points on it, we would end up being pulled from pillar to post trying to do everything. We can’t do that, not with any level of quality. So we’re going to build it up slowly making sure that we’re doing it to the quality that we need to do it to make it worthwhile.”

Millwall can look to Norwich as one example of a club that has recently recruited successfully in foreign markets without spending a fortune.

The Canaries took the likes of Mario Vrančić and Marco Stiepermann from the German second division, while Teemu Pukki arrived on a free transfer from Danish side Brondby. All three were key players as they won promotion from the Championship in 2018-19, and Pukki is this season the second top scorer behind Sergio Aguero in the Premier League.

Aldridge added: “Some obvious ones would be the Scandinavian market.

Other clubs in the Championship have had success in Germany. It won’t take a genius to work out that central, northern, north-western European leagues are probably obvious places to start.

“We’ve made a start on that already.”

Another key component of Millwall’s recruitment process is their background

checks on players, which they will also need to integrate into their scouting abroad.

Aldridge explained what is involved in collecting information on a player’s character.

“The most straightforward way of doing that is by speaking to as many people as possible,” he said. “It could be players, it could be ex-team-mates, exmanagers, ex-assistant managers, coaches over a period of time, both recent and historical.

“Obviously people change. If you speak to a player’s manager from five years ago they might say slightly different things to a manager from five months ago.

“So we try and get a good range and spread of references from managers to players. Sometimes a current team-mate of a player is not a particularly good reference because they might not want to speak badly of someone. You might get an over-positive reference from a current

team-mate.

“Alongside that we would also check for obvious no-no’s on social media, Instagram or Twitter. To be fair, a lot of players are pretty sensible with that but we just double-check that there’s nothing alarming that we need to ask around about.

“The bulk of it is just getting as many references as we can and once you get five, six, seven references on a player then generally you’ve got quite a consistent picture at that point, you know what you’re getting.

“Neil will then get a really good feel for that player when he sits down and spends an hour or two with him, having a chat about family life, football life, whatever it may be, and make sure it tallies up with the expectation that we have of that player’s character and what we think they’re going to be like. Generally they are [like that] and we don’t have any nasty surprises, touch wood.”

MATT SMITH has been doing the business on the pitch this season.

His two goals in August after his summer switch from QPR earned Millwall four points against West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday.

But in an alternative universe Smith could be working in the City of London as a management consultant.

Smith was 21 years old in early 2011 and in the final year of an International Management with American Studies degree at the University of Manchester, after a year at Arizona State University.

At the same time he was playing for Solihull Moors in the Conference North, he was going for interviews in the City, where he saw his future in one of the busiest financial centres in the world.

The world of professional football was the furthest thing from his mind, but twelve goals in fourteen games for the Moors meant a “pipe dream” became reality.

A reality that would include stealing the headlines from Luis Suarez with two goals that knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup. “I was fortunate in the sense that my football career took off at non-league level in my final year of university,” Smith tells the News.

“I got picked up by Oldham off the back of that. I graduated June 2011 and in July 2011 I started a career as a professional footballer. I was very fortunate with the timing that I got to complete the degree.

“Obviously it was a pipe dream and I

would have snapped your hand off at the chance. I was playing non-league at quite a low level, particularly year one and two of university.

“No, the thought of being a professional was way, way off my radar. I had a really good season in the Conference North in my final year which kind of surprised some.

Even then I thought maybe I’ve got a sniff at a full-time Conference team. But I was fortunate that Paul Dickov took a real liking to me and took me to Oldham in League One. “I was interviewing for jobs in my final year of university. I had interviews in the City for management consultant roles in Accenture, Bailey & Co. I was interviewed a few times, I didn’t get through them but my thought process was I wanted to work in the City and use my business degree.

“A lot of my mates were taking up graduate positions in London and that was something I wanted to do as well. But all the while my season was getting better and better. At Solihull Moors I was scoring every week.

“I knew nothing about professional football. Agents were calling me regularly saying they could get me this, they could get me this. It was totally foreign to me.

“Then I took a shining to one lawyer in Manchester who started to put my name in with various teams. I met with Paul Dickov in a Frankie & Benny’s in Manchester.

“I got a two-year contract. Even then the first eighteen months of that two years was very average. I didn’t hit the ground running at all. It took a while to adapt to full-time football, the rigours of not only the physical side but the mental side, which I struggled with.

“The highs and the lows. I used to really go low when we would lose, when we were not performing. That level-headedness took me a while to get to.”

Smith’s professional career really only properly took off in the last six months of his second season at Oldham.

Suarez scored once but Smith hit a brace in a 3-2 win to set up a fifth-round clash with Everton. Smith scored an injury-time equaliser in a 2-2 draw at home and again in the replay. Everton won that 3-1 but Smith was big news: The brainy footballer with the degree.

“I think that catapulted my profile from absolute obscurity to national headlines overnight and everyone was talking about

the story we’re talking about now,” he says.

“Obviously it’s a rare story, you don’t see too many university graduates come out and have a successful football career.”

He had been released by Cheltenham Town as an eighteen-year-old, before playing for Redditch and Droylsden. After his cup exploits he had plenty of options in the summer of 2013.

Leeds signed him and he scored thirteen goals in 43 games in the 2013-14 season. The club had been bought by the controversial Massimo Cellino midway through the campaign, and Smith signed a new threeyear deal in the summer – only to then be sold to Fulham on deadline day.

“The owner at the time, it’s welldocumented, was a bit of a character,” Smith says. “To sign a three-year contract and be told a week later you were on the transfer list was quite baffling.”

Smith spent three years with the Cottagers – including one season on loan at Bristol City – before joining QPR in 2017.

Millwall had been interested in him as far back as 2014, when Ian Holloway made bids to take him to The Den. He finally got a move to the club he feels most suits his style in the summer.

He considers himself more “level-headed” now, compared to those first two seasons when defeat used to hit him so hard.

“I wanted to kick on and to do well,” Smith continues, recalling those early days when he used to get so down after losses. “You get a taste for it and want to keep improving as a player, to keep getting better and score goals regularly. But it just wasn’t happening.

“My mum felt that it was just a stab in the dark and in two years I would fall back on my business degree and everything would

be fine. I don’t think either of my parents really thought that I would be in the position I’m in now.

“I’ve got no intention of resting on my laurels. I always want to get better, score more goals. I’ve been in the Championship for six years now and I’ve got no intention of just being content with being a run-of-themill Championship player. I want to keep improving.

“It took a couple of seasons but now I feel I’m a pretty level-headed lad. The mental side of the game was something I’d never truly considered. But when it’s your job and your full-time profession it’s a different kettle of fish altogether.

“I’ve got a good support network around me, and when you’re going through the good times you don’t get too high, and when you’re going through the bad times, of which there are going to be plenty, stay levelheaded.

“It’s not my first rodeo in terms of what I’m experiencing now. Once you have that experience you know how to handle situations.”

Smith will soon take his first steps preparing for life after playing.

“I’m thinking about going back into education in the next year or so potentially to do an MBA,” he reveals.

“I’d like to stay in the business side of things [in football], I don’t think management/coaching is going to be an avenue I’m going to pursue. I certainly think at club level there could be business interests that hopefully I could be well-suited to.

“It’s about getting as many plates spinning when that day comes. You want to be wellprepared for it because there’s a lot of life to live after football.”

Millwall take time over contract decisions EXCLUSIVE

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris said he wasn’t currently thinking about players’ contracts – but urged those with deals expiring to “earn” extensions.

Over half of the Lions’ senior squad are on deals until 2020, though those contracts contain activation clauses for extensions or options for the club to extend.

Striker Tom Elliott activated a twelve-month extension last season,

while younger players such as Billy Mitchell will be hoping to earn new contracts beyond this campaign.

Millwall only give contracts of twelve months’ length to players over the age of 30. Shaun Williams, who will be 33 in October, signed a oneyear deal last September that expires at the end of June 2020.

Harris has shown he is not afraid to let players’ contracts run down if he feels the need to refresh his squad. The Millwall boss was backed by his board in the summer when the likes of Jordan Archer Conor McLaughlin and Ryan Tunnicliffe were not offered fresh terms and were allowed to leave

on free transfers, with the club then recruiting nine senior players permanently or on loan.

Millwall won’t be rushing into deciding on the long-term futures of players.

“In the past we’ve made decisions early but I think now what we’re saying to the players is, ‘make sure you earn those contracts’,” Harris said.

“I really like the group we’ve got at the moment, we’re in a really good place. I’ve got to be honest, thinking about contracts isn’t at the forefront of my mind currently.

“We’re concentrating on being better

“What I learned from last year, and we dealt with it in the summer, is we’ve always got to be better. We can’t afford to stand still at this level.

“So if players want to continue to rise with us, whether they’re eighteen or whether they’re 33, they have to continue to improve and continue to show their importance to the team and the squad. Ultimately whether they’re in the team or not they have to show their importance, younger and senior ages.

“At the moment, in September, it’s all about the group of players we’ve got progressing.”

MAHONEY BRACED FOR ROUGH ROVERS RETURN EXCLUSIVE

CONNOR MAHONEY won’t let the Blackburn boo-boys get him down when he returns to Ewood Park this Saturday.

Mahoney, 22, started his career at Accrington Stanley before joining Rovers, the team he supports, in 2013 and making his first-team debut as a sixteen-year-old under Gary Bowyer.

The winger was offered a new deal in the summer of 2017, but he rejected the terms and joined Bournemouth on a free transfer.

Mahoney went back to Ewood Park while on loan at Birmingham last season, and was jeered by some fans during the 2-2 draw.

“It’ll be good to go back. I’ve been back once before, with Birmingham.

I didn’t get the best reception,” Mahoney said.

“My family will be in the crowd.

My friends will be in the Rovers end.

My family have been to most of the Millwall games, every single one at The Den. They know what it’s like there and they’ve enjoyed the experience of coming and seeing me at a different club.

“It will be strange but it’ll be a good experience. I’ll probably get the same reception I did last time, a few boos but that’s part and parcel of the game. I’m not really bothered about that.
