Anger after ‘no change’ in garden waste service

ANGRY RESIDENTS have blasted the new garden waste scheme from Southwark Council, saying despite stumping up the cash there is ‘no change’ to the service.

NEIL COYLE visited Central Southwark Community Hub's Family Summer Holiday Club last week to meet families and their children who struggle to make ends meet during the school holidays and to thank volunteers for their hard work.

The club at St Paul's Church in Walworth's Lorrimore Square has been supporting one hundred families with arts and crafts, storytelling and other fun activities during the school summer holidays - including a free, cooked lunch.

Many families across Southwark are at risk of 'holiday hunger' during the weeks when their children are without free school meals.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, who dropped in last Wednesday, August 7, told the News the problem was getting worse in his constituency

each year: "There will be many more children affected whom we don’t know about, sadly.

"I'm glad Southwark Council and the Mayor of London are helping to fund this hub and hope that they will continue to do so whilst families are in need.

“Children should not be going hungry in one of the wealthiest cities in the world, and much of the growing problem that now exists is a direct result of government policies sadly.

“In 2017 I set up the All Party Parliamentary Group for food banks to challenge ministers on the rising need for food banks and will continue to do so when

parliament returns in September.

"In the meantime, I'm deeply grateful to the hundreds of volunteers and donors who help services like Central Southwark Community Hub run across the country.

"After today’s visit I want to particularly thank Felicia, Margaret, and all of the other staff and volunteers who provide this service every school holiday, and for their work throughout the rest of the year providing food and activities to local families.”

Southwark was one of the first local authorities to see residents moved onto Universal Credit.

The Southwark News is proud to be the only independent, paid for newspaper in London.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

Since then, the council says the new system has led to an increase in rent arrears and surging food bank reliance.

Last August, Pecan, Southwark's largest food bank, helped 149 children who otherwise would have gone without.

This is an increase of 32 per cent compared with the previous year.

The Department for Work and Pensions has disputed claims the system is pushing people into poverty, claiming many people move onto the system with preexisting debts, which then fall over time.

One Bermondsey man complained of a “shambles”, with no new kitchen waste bins issued, saying many had now paid for garden waste collection others were still getting for ‘free’.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Tooley Street’s cabinet member for the environment, apologised for the disruption, telling the News: “We have now removed most of the unsubscribed garden waste bins in the borough.

“Very soon the rest will have been removed and the remaining requests for new food waste and garden waste bins will have been fulfilled.”

From June, residents of kerbside properties were told they would have to pay a £25 fee for their garden waste to be collected, rising to £30 after March 2020.

HE HANGS out with high-profile celebs like Keeley Hawes and Daniel Radcliffe, eats an expensive raw food diet, and wears a £5,000 personalised Swarovski crystal-emblazoned jacket.

Yet Burly Bear, from Borough, isn’t a jet-setting businessman or a trustfund kid – but a pampered Pomeranian puppy with the designer collars and leads to match.

The star-studded adventures of the cuddly pooch, aged just six months old, are detailed through an account on Instagram, @burlybearpom, which has amassed 7,700 followers in just fourteen weeks.

Burly often meets celebs as one of his owners, Ken, 55, is a freelance fashion hairdresser with top clientele.

The pup’s exclusive access sees him regularly meeting well-known names like Alan Carr, Rupert Everett, and Lily Collins – even featuring with the latter on the Vogue website.

His first break came when he met Keeley Hawes as she was getting ready for an event – and she was so taken with him she later asked for the pooch to join her in a photo-shoot for The Mail on Sunday’s You magazine.

He has also joined her at a preBAFTAs party.

The photos were shot at Syon House, the palatial London home of the Duke of Northumberland.

“We had to get special permission for him to be allowed inside,” said

Michael O’Hagan, Ken’s partner, who works in construction.

“Lily Collins also found out we had a dog, so she said bring him to work with you. Now every-time she’s in town she says bring Burly,” the 34year-old said.

After meeting the model and actress in April, Burly featured with her in a photoshoot ahead of an exclusive party for Cartier in Shoreditch.

The Pomeranian has an agent and publicist, and is often clothed in designer outfits and accessories.

“He’s got four designer collars, and a Moncler jacket as well,” said Michael.

“It was the last one in stock, so we thought ‘we have to get it.’” The puffer garment retails for around £280.

They cost several hundreds of pounds a pop - but no expense is spared for the beloved pup, who the couple have had since April, when he was about ten weeks old.

“He’s got Tiffany dog bowls and sleeps on a cashmere blanket. We did get a teddy bear made for him as well,” he said. “He’s more spoilt than me – he’s like our child really!”

The long-list of celeb pals sometimes even comes with some presents for Burly.

Actress Emilia Clarke, best known for her role in Game of Thrones, gifted the Pomeranian doggie rain mac.

“She said, ‘I’ve got this jacket I’d love to give him,’” Michael told the News.

He may even soon hit our TV screens – as footage of him could appear in an upcoming Channel Five series called ‘101 Puppies’, due to come out around Christmas time.

There is, however, one celeb Alister he has yet to make friends with.

“I’d love him to meet Kylie!” said Michael.

His diet is no less pampered either.

The pup eats a specialist raw food diet to keep him in top condition for his appearances next to his A-list friends.

One time buying the food, Michael added: “The woman serving said to us: ‘When I come back, I want to come back as your dog!’

SHOPPERS FLEE AS CAR CRASHES INTO ICELAND

HEART-STOPPING CCTV footage seen by the News shows the shocking moment a car came crashing through a busy Bermondsey Iceland while unsuspecting shoppers were picking up their groceries.

The Nissan Almera driver, who appeared to be a learner, smashed through the front doors of the supermarket on Southwark Park Road at around 4pm on Friday, August 9 – missing customers by mere seconds.

Eyewitnesses also told the News the driver appeared to be using crutches at the time of operating the car.

Luckily, no-one was injured in the crash which happened after the novice attempted a manoeuvre – and instead the grey Nissan hit a sign urging shoppers to have their goods delivered.

The dramatic tape shows shocked shoppers dodging out the way of the car, which had ‘L’ plates on its front and back.

One startled customer is seen barely inches away from the vehicle.

“I was being served at the time,” one Iceland shopper who didn’t wish to be named told the News at the scene on

Friday. “And all of the sudden, a car came right through the front door.

“I was the first customer when it came through, I was right by it.”

The Iceland customer was standing first in the queue – so close to where the car collided, the impact knocked the end of his trolley.

“I was a couple of feet away at most. It had come through the first window instead, it could’ve hit me, and that’s the truth of it.”

“But I’m more worried about other people than myself. It really scared the cashier.

“I’m just pleased nobody was hurt.”

Another eye-witness, Tracey, said she was about go into the store to pick up milk with her niece when the collision happened.

“I’m quite shook up, it was so quick,” she said.

“A mum was coming past with her kid in a pram. If it had been a few more seconds, it could’ve hit them.”

“I think so many people are shook-up,” said a third shopper, who did not wish to be named.

A Scotland Yard spokesperson confirmed that they had been called, but said there were no arrests in the crash.

But police told the News that as the

incident was a ‘damage only collision’ it would not be looking into the matter any further.

“This was naturally a very shocking and upsetting incident for all those in our Bermondsey store at the time, but we are very relieved to report that none of our customers or colleagues was injured,” added a spokesman for Iceland.

“We take great pride in the calm and professional way in which our store colleagues handled the situation.

“The store has been able to remain open throughout and continues to meet the needs of the local community that we are proud to serve.”

AN APPEAL for witnesses of an alleged assault by a taxi driver on his passenger in London Bridge has been circulated by police.

Officers say the reported incident took place at 1.15am on Friday, May 17, with CCTV footage showing the driver of a Mercedes Vito Hackney Carriage appearing to brake excessively, injuring the passenger, as they travelled over the bridge.

PARALYSED FROM THE WAIST DOWN BUT JO IS DOING A TRIATHLON

A BERMONDSEY woman is to undertake a gruelling disability triathlon to raise money for a charity which helped her, after she was left paralysed from the waist down.

Jo Williams was diagnosed with water on the brain at the young age of two, and needed a shunt fitted to drain the fluid.

Despite two further operations – to correct scoliosis at fifteen, and to refit the shunt at 22 – Jo attended university, where she was a frequent runner and horse rider.

But in April 2018, Jo suffered a spinal stroke, leaving her paralysed from the waist down.

Now 33-year-old is aiming to raise £1,500 for Neurokinex, a specialist rehab charity which helped her after her hospital treatment, by competing in the half Superhero Tri on Saturday, August 17.

“Neurokinex has helped me so much since I was discharged from Stoke Mandeville and the Superhero Tri event is a great opportunity for me to give back by taking part and raising awareness for the charity,” she said.

Her sessions with the charity have improved her arm strength and core and balance.

The event, which takes place at Dorney Lake in Windsor, sees competitors compete solo, in pairs or in groups to tackle cycling, swimming and running challenges.

Jo will be taking on a 400m swim, 10k cycle and 2.5k run along with her Neurokinex trainer, Rocky Addison, who will be doing the swim section on her behalf. ““This will be a huge challenge but

King’s dental no longer a walk-in

AN EMERGENCY dental clinic at King’s College Hospital is no longer open to walk-ins.

From Monday, August 12, the clinic started operating by appointment only, with patients now needing to phone up on the day at 8am to find out if there are slots available the same afternoon.

The trust says the new system will mean patients “know immediately whether we can see you, you won’t have to make an unnecessary journey and you can plan your visit into your day.”

If not, the team will either recommend phoning again the next day or dialling 101 to find other emergency and urgent services elsewhere.

Fire brigade list 57 schools and colleges not fitted with sprinklers

Three teenagers – two aged fourteen, and one aged sixteen – were arrested on suspicion of GBH and taken into custody, said Scotland Yard.

They have subsequently been bailed to return on a date in early September.

AN ELEPHANT and Castle college is among the 57 education establishments where fires occurred this year which had no sprinklers fitted, according to the London Fire Brigade.

The research revealed that a blaze at the college, thought to be the London College of Communication on January 30, did not have an automatic fire suppression system installed.

The Brigade is calling for such equipment to be mandatory in all new school builds and for all schools to be retrofitted with sprinklers during major refurbs.

Charlie Pugsley, Deputy Assistant Commissioner for Fire Safety, said: “It is shocking that we have been campaigning for a number of years to make sprinklers mandatory in new schools and retrofitted during major refurbishments and yet this year, every school fire we have been called to has had no sprinklers fitted.”

Last month was the ten-year anniversary of a devastating fire at a school in Hoxton, which saw it closed for more than three years.

Thug sent to jail after attacking a stranger on train with nail scissors

A THUG who attempted to stab a stranger with nail scissors in an unprovoked attack on a London Bridge train has been jailed.

Paryce Duncan, 24, pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon and attempted wounding with intent at Blackfriars Crown Court on August 2.

Yesterday he was given two years and nine months behind bars for the April 2018 attack.

The court heard how the victim, a man in his twenties, had been sat listening to

music alone on the train to Norwood Junction when Duncan approached him from behind and punched him in the head.

He asked the victim: ‘Do you want to die tonight?’ before pulling a pair of nail scissors from his pocket and lunging towards the victim’s neck.

The victim luckily managed to block his forearm and deflect the impact before calling police, who arrested the attacker – from Croydon’s Robert Street – at Norwood Junction.

But afterwards Duncan told police he couldn’t even remember the unprovoked attack – because he had

drunk too much Jack Daniels.

Inspector Malcolm McCulloch, from the British Transport Police, said the ‘random and unprovoked’ attack could have had ‘devastating consequences’.

“His sentence clearly reflects the seriousness of the incident and I hope it serves as a strong reminder to any offenders that we simply will not tolerate violence on the railway,” he said.

“While this was a shocking attack, I would like to remind the public that unprovoked incidents such as this are thankfully extremely rare on the rail network.”

Shocking figures: The Stats on Violence Against Women and Girls in Southwark

but can new legislation help break a generational cycle of abuse?

R

ECORDED CASES of domestic violence offences have increased by more than a quarter in the last three years in Southwark, as the council vowed to do more to support affected families and target perpetrators with early interventions, writes Katherine Johnston....

Southwark has the fourth highest volume of recorded domestic abuse offences in London, a number which has increased by 27 per cent since 2015/6, according to police data.

In the same period, referrals to specially commissioned support services rose by 52 per cent.

This year, a panel of experts looked at how Southwark Council can improve support to victims, including those experiencing stalking and harassment.

They want to help identify perpetrators sooner and, use ‘behaviour change’ to help them make a lasting effect.

A new five-year strategy for ending violence against women and girls was

published last month.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety and public health, told the News: “Violence against women and girls in all its forms is unacceptable.

“It affects all communities and has an incalculable impact on the lives of those individuals affected, their families and the wider community.

“Through building on the community foundations we already have in place, I am confident that by working together we will achieve our vision, and reduce the harm caused by gendered based violence for future generations.”

Key themes include broadening existing work helping victims of domestic abuse, and seeing violence against women and girls as part of other issues – from child sexual exploitation, gang activity and sexual harassment on the street.

Much of this work will be a legal duty for local authorities due to the new Domestic Abuse Bill, championed by Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet

Harman.

For the first time, this law widens the definition of domestic abuse to include coercion and financial control. It will also end the cross-examination of victims by their abusers in family courts.

Fundamentally, it places more of the responsibility for dealing with these issues on local authorities.

Writing in this newspaper, Harman pleaded with Boris Johnson to back the new bill, and give councils the funding they need, properly to implement it, as long-term cuts from central government have left councils like Southwark funding front-line services without any extra money.

“I am urging the government to set aside a percentage of gross national income to safeguard refuge funding and end the hand-to-mouth existence of these vital places of safety,” she said.

“Southwark Council and over 40 councils are backing this.

“The important thing is to establish the principle – the money would be a tiny

percentage of government spending overall, but be hugely important for women and children fleeing violence.”

In 2015, Southwark Council estimated the financial toll to its services from domestic abuse was around £20 million each year; cash spent on urgently rehousing families, providing foster care placements, and specialist services for women, children and men affected.

One of Southwark’s key partners is Solace Women’s Aid. A spokesperson told the News it welcomed the strategy, as the number of women seeking help is “consistently increasing: “We are seeing more and more high risk cases, last year alone Solace received over 2,500 referrals in the borough and we expect that rate to increase.

“At a time where the need for specialist support is at an all-time high, it is essential to have a joined up approach and long-term vision to ensure we can reach more survivors, with the right support, sooner.

“Solace works in Southwark providing specialist support to ensure survivors are

safe, can recover from the impacts of abuse and can rebuild their futures independently.

“We welcome Southwark Council incorporating this understanding into their strategy as well as their approach to raising community awareness and holding perpetrators to account for their behaviour.

“Working closely with Southwark Council, we have been developing new and creative ways to deliver services.

“We have seen positive outcomes for service users and been able to reach, and engage with, more of the most vulnerable people in the borough who are facing severe and multiple disadvantage.

“But there is still a long way to go to ensure every survivor can live free from abuse.

“While innovation and partnerships are key, we also recognise the need for more funding for our core community services and IDVAs (Independent Domestic Violence Advisors) who work on the frontline, often with the most

A SURVIVOR’S STORY:

“I FEEL SAFE AND NO LONGER IN FEAR WHEN I WALK THROUGH THE DOOR” ONE WOMAN has told of how being rehoused with support from Solace Women’s Aid and Southwark Council helped her flee abuse.

“My husband had mainly been verbally abusive to me. I came to the UK nine years ago after an arranged marriage.

“The only means of income I had was the child benefit which I had to feed my two children.

“I was also sexually abused and was four months’ pregnant with my third child. I have medical issues so have been classed as a high risk pregnancy.

“My husband had been having an affair and he had left the family home to be with his new girlfriend.

“I was then a further victim from my husband’s brother who was still living at the property, who continued the verbal abuse in front of my children and treated me like a slave.”

Initially placed in one-room shared housing in Tower Hamlets, Solace helped the family move into

After moving in a few months ago she now, for the first time, has access to benefits she is entitled to.

“I feel safe and no longer in fear when I walk through the door. My children are more relaxed and we are all looking forward to the baby being born.

“This is the first time since I have been in the UK I can plan for the future. I want to improve on my English and to eventually go into education.

“I am very grateful for all the support from Solace and feel safe to know they will still be supporting me until I move on to a permanent property.”

Although Southwark’s housing support for survivors has been praised as best in class, earlier intervention would minimise trauma for victims and, in some, extreme cases, could help more mothers stay with their children.

According to the council’s own records, 31 per cent of social care family assessments carried out from May 2015 to March 2019 listed domestic abuse as a factor in referral.

And the number of ‘high risk’ cases the council reviews is growing – with a ten per cent increase been 20172018 and 2018-19.

And this abuse is generational – with those experiencing it in childhood struggling with abuse in adulthood, too.

PAUSE Southwark is an

organisation working with women who have had two or more children removed from their care.

This may take the form of help with attending appointments, accessing housing or benefits or employment, or getting mental health support and counselling.

The charity says 88 per cent of these women in Southwark have experience of domestic abuse.

Seventy-one per cent of them experienced childhood abuse themselves, and nearly half of all the women they work with spent time in the care system as children.

Earlier intervention could be key to breaking this generational cycle of violence – but it won’t work unless perpetrators are given the help they need too.

Identifying those who want to change, and those who don’t and will continue to abuse with potentially lethal consequences is a huge challenge – with or without extra funding.

A FIRE that broke out in a semidetached house under renovation in East Dulwich is believed to have been caused by a lamp, the Fire Brigade confirmed.

Firefighters were called to the home on Underhill Road last Thursday, August 8, shortly before 4pm.

It took around 25 to put out the blaze, which the Brigade says appears to have been started by a halogen lamp coming into contact with some cardboard boxes and a sofa. Part of the first floor was damaged.

Six builders had already left the property when firefighters arrived, with no reports of any injuries.

Warnings over candles after Bermondsey fire

A BLAZE at a Bermondsey flat is thought to have been caused by a candle coming into contact with a plastic holder.

Around 25 firefighters managed to get the fire at a flat on Thurland Road, behind St James’s Church, under control on Wednesday afternoon, (August 7).

Four fire engines were called to the blaze at 12.38pm and got the fire under control at 13.19pm.

Part of a five-roomed flat on the second floor of a four-storey block has been damaged by the fire.

There were no reports of any injuries,

said the London Fire Brigade. A spokesperson for the Brigade issued a candle safety warning following the fire, saying: “Candles, incense sticks and oil burners are one of the most common causes of fire.

"It is really important that you never leave them unattended and keep them away from anything that could catch fire such as curtains, furniture or clothes.

"If you are using them, make sure they are placed in a suitable fire resistant candleholder which won’t be knocked over, and make sure you put them out entirely when you leave the room and especially before bed.”

Fire crews from Dockhead, Dowgate, Whitechapel and Shadwell fire stations were at the scene.

TWENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD Tumisha Balugun, from North Peckham Estate, is one of the founders of The Advantage Group, an organising working with Southwark schools to help young people gain the confidence and skills needed to land their dream career.

“I grew up in what you’d say was a low income background with free school dinners. I did not want to be

defined by my circumstances, but when I got an internship at google at the beginning I really struggled with imposter syndrome. I didn’t want any young person to feel like that,” the former Ark Globe student says.

Tumisha has already visited her former school, as well as St Thomas The Apostle and Harris Academy Peckham. Now interning for Red Bull, she hopes to soon run her organisation full-time and reach thousands more students with pitching and presentation workshops.

Brigade says don’t tackle fires after flat blaze in Forest Hill

A FLAT fire that left a ground floor flat in Forest Hill badly damaged was likely to have been started by a tumble dryer, the Fire Brigade has said.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at St German's Road at 5.04pm on Saturday, August 10.

Twenty-five firefighters brought it under control by 6pm.

A spokesperson for the LFB said twelve people had left the building before the brigade arrived, including the flat's occupier, who was inside a nearby property at the time.

"The fire is believed to originate from the tumble dryer and will be subjected to further tests," the spokesperson said.

“It is believed that the residents tried to use wet towels to tackle the fire in the early stages.

"We’d kindly remind people to not try to fight fires but to leave it to the professionals. If there is a fire in your home, get out, close the door behind you, stay out and call 999.”

A BABY swan which was rescued from Surrey Quays after getting its leg caught in fishing wire is expected to make a full recovery - and has even made new friends.

A Swan Sanctuary volunteer and the Fire Brigade worked together to free the 'distressed' cygnet last month, which would not have lasted long without their efforts because of its swollen leg.

The Fire Brigade used a water rescue boat to free the swan, as it was trapped in deep water, before it was handed over to the care of the charity.

Now despite a bit of a limp, the creature is said to be doing ‘very well’ – as well as making new pals with other cygnets.

“He’s going really well!” said Gemma, a volunteer with the charity.

“He’s got a bit of a limp, but we

ONE YEAR AGO LITTLE JOEL DIED IN DEPTFORD ARSON ATTACK - HELP CATCH HIS KILLERS

MOVING TRIBUTES were paid to murdered seven-year-old Joel Urhie as detectives renewed an appeal for information a year after he was killed in an arson attack on his family home in Deptford.

On Wednesday, August 7, detectives launched a renewed bid to track down Joel’s killer or killers, a year to the day he died in a fire in Adolphus Street.

Police believe the blaze was caused by a burning item pushed through the letterbox.

Joel’s body was found by emergency services in an upstairs bedroom he shared with his mother, and had injuries ‘consistent with fire and smoke

inhalation.’

The seven-year-old’s mother and older sister, who were also upstairs at the property, managed to escape the fire by jumping from first-floor windows.

“Joel was the sweetest most caring little boy you could ever meet. He was so intelligent and always curious to learn new things,” said his mother, Efe. “His smile and laugh would light up a room and he was so full of life and energy."

His cousin Tega Majoroh added: “Joel was like the sunshine after rain.

There are so many memories that I will always treasure - and there will always be a hole in our hearts.”

Officers have urged anyone with information about the ‘callous’ attack

on the ‘innocent’ little boy to come forward.

“I remain committed to finding the person or people responsible for killing Joel,” said investigating officer, DCI Mark Wrigley.

“I do want to remind anyone with information that we are dealing with the death of an innocent seven-year-old child.

“He should have been able to sleep safely with his mother, but instead he died at a tragically young age due to a callous attack which was doubtless motivated by factors far behind the comprehension of any young child.

“There are people out there who know exactly what went on and who is responsible for Joel’s death. I need them to call me now.”

The charity Crimestoppers is also offering a £10,000 reward for information they receive anonymously which leads to the arrest of those responsible for the seven-year-old’s murder.

A fire service investigation indicated that an accelerant was used on the front door of the house before the attack, which had led to an appeal about a man buying petrol.

He has now been eliminated from inquiries, Scotland Yard said, but other lines of inquiry are being pursued.

Detectives said they also could not rule in or out any particular motive for the attack.

A fundraising page set up by Vicky Diplacto, 31 – who is not known to the family – has raised over £30,000 for the boy’s medical treatment, so that he can receive ‘gold standard care’.

“I have started this campaign as it is a truly horrendous incident,” states the nurse on the fundraising page.

“My family were unfortunately in a similar situation five years ago when my brother suffered a similar accident.

“I have a young son myself, I am a nurse, and having been through the experience of this and understanding how difficult it is has been the driving force behind showing support to this family

through such a tragic time.”

The money has been raised in euros so that the family will be able to use it if and when they need to, the appeal adds.

“I want the family to know I haven’t taken my mind off their little boy since the incident. I hope they receive all the care & support they need,” said one of the nearly 1,000 donors.

“My heart breaks for both him and his parents. I wish you well little one,” added another.

It comes after a 17-year-old appeared in court on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the incident.

The teen – who cannot be named for

legal reasons – was remanded in youth custody to appear in court in November, ahead of a potential trial date in February 2020.

OVER £30,000 RAISED FOR BOY ‘THROWN FROM TATE MODERN’

OVER £30,000 has been raised by well-wishers to pay for the medical bills of the six-year-old allegedly thrown 100 feet from the Tate Modern.

The boy, a French national visiting London with his family, suffered serious injuries after falling from the Tate’s viewing platform to a fifth-floor roof.

He reportedly sustained bleeding on the brain, fractured spine, arms and legs, and is in a ‘critical but stable’ condition in hospital.

Ian Barritt, who managed the fire brigade crew at the scene last month, said that calling the RSPCA is the best thing to do first if a trapped swan is seen, but that the fire brigade is happy to attend if specialist equipment is needed.

It comes after a baby fox was rescued in Rotherhithe station by a concerned passer-by last month.

The cub, dubbed Sandy by her rescuers, was released into the wild at nearby Russia Dock Woodlands.

AN EAST Dulwich man stabbed a stranger in the neck with a Rambo-style hunting knife at his local off-licence after a row erupted over a cigarette, a court has heard.

Jahmel Riley, 25, is standing trial for allegedly knifing 39-year-old Dennis Anderson (pictured) to death in the Pay Less store on Lordship Lane, East Dulwich, in the early hours of February 10.

The Old Bailey heard that Riley had been asking customers for cigarettes after entering the shop to buy alcohol following an evening at a baby shower.

The victim, from Lewisham, who had just left a 60th birthday party, allegedly responded by saying: “Why are you asking for cigarettes? Why don’t you get a job like the rest of us? What are you poncing or begging for?”

The jury heard that a tussle broke out between the two men when Riley pulled the knife from his waistband and Mr Anderson – who was significantly intoxicated – attempted to disarm him.

CCTV footage showed the two of them staggering to the entrance of the shop before going to ground and Riley appearing to make a stabbing motion to the victim’s neck.

A post-mortem examination revealed the knife had sliced into Mr Anderson’s upper chest, cutting his jugular, carotid artery and the upper lobe of the right lung.

Riley fled the scene, abandoning the knife in the gutter and also losing his cap.

The court was told that samples taken from the cap yielded a DNA match to Riley and officers contacted several members of his family, including his father and brother, in a bid to track him down.

He eventually handed himself in at Lewisham police station three days later.

In his police interview, Riley claimed he had been in a happy mood and was tipsy rather than drunk at the time of the incident.

He claimed Mr Anderson told him: “Do you think I would buy cigarettes to f****** give to you? You f****** tramp. Go and buy your own f****** cigarettes.”

The defendant said the exchange “got his defences up” and he had pulled the knife out to get Mr Anderson to leave him alone.

Riley, of Lordship Lane, denies murder, claiming he stabbed the victim accidentally when they fell.

He claims he had confiscated the knife from two youths he had seen brandishing it close to the baby shower earlier that evening, and had not got around to disposing of it.

Prosecutor Duncan Atkinson QC said: “The prosecution’s case is that his behaviour with that knife, showing a strong familiarity with it and the wholly unlikely explanation that he happened to acquire such an item just before this incident, had not found a bin to throw it into in the meantime and happened to produce it when confronted by Anderson, demonstrates this was his own knife.”

The trial continues, and is expected to last a week.

Funeral for 19-year-old Rotherhithe artist to be held this month

A FUNERAL for the nineteenyear-old Fine Art student who was found dead in Russia Dock Woodland nearly three weeks after he went missing from the Canada Water home he shared with his mother will be held later in August.

His bereft mother, Grace Carlos, said the service would be held at 2.30pm on Wednesday, August 21, at Honor Oak Crematorium.

Anyone joining the service is asked not to wear bright colours, and instead dress in black or white.

She asked the paper to share the details with readers, many of whom had led a search for her son,

including helping distribute hundreds of posters across London, and those who had donated to an online fundraiser set up by residents to help cover the costs of the funeral, arranged by Albin's.

Last week she told the News she would be forever grateful to the friends, family, colleagues and neighbours who joined the search and offered their support.

“To know that my son was a good person, that he touched so many people’s lives, and was so kind, it is the only thing I have that can help me heal," she said.

“I have been so touched by everyone’s kindness and generosity.”

It is hoped an exhibition of Aldrin's work will be displayed at City and Guilds College, later in the year.

MORE THAN 800 aspiring stage stars responded to an open audition call for the cast of The Phantom of the Opera last week.

The hit musical is now in its 33rd year in the West End, and will be touring the UK and Ireland in February 2020, with both lead and ensemble roles up for grabs.

Auditions were held last Monday, August 5, at Mountview, the leading performance arts school that opened its new headquarters to Peckham in

September last year.

Hundreds of hopefuls arrived before the doors opened at nine in the morning, with the first taking their place at 3am. By six, a long queue was already in place, which only got bigger despite the showers.

Each person to audition performed a song for the panel, including director Seth Sklar-Heyn, Paul Wooller and Felicity French, Trevor Jackson and Melanie Watts from casting.

Those through to the next round will be asked to return later in August.

I am just back from Bordeaux in France, where was inaugurated in 2013 the highest lift bridge in Europe. The bridge is 575m (1886ft) long, 77m (253ft) high, with a 110 m (361 ft) main span.

It is used for cars (43,000 a day), lorries, cycles and pedestrians, so the technical specifications are much more complex than for the Rotherhithe bridge. Yet, the cost for this bridge was ‘only’ €157m (£145m).

I understand costs may be slightly higher in London but this is still a £455m difference, for a smaller/easier bridge.

I go just over 20mph down Grange Road and get stopped and yet going through a shop window is one of those things???

All the London Mayoral candidates in 2016 knew that the public transport subsidy to London was going to be cut by central government. Sadly the Labour party candidate Sadiq Khan ignored this and made a rash promise to freeze TfL fares for four years.

Labour must have known then that not increasing fares with inflation meant that cuts would have to be made. East Dulwich Labour politicians campaigned for that London manifesto and this electoral promise so how on earth can they now fake surprise at the resulting cuts?

This kind of sleight of hand pretending one party is to blame for your own rash electoral promises is one reason why so many voters are cynical these days.

For East Dulwich this means fewer buses on route 12. But it has also meant cuts and route changes to bus routes 40, 176 and 185. As you rightly pointed out in your editorial these cuts are happening when we need people to switch from private cars to public transport to help fight the climate emergency.

Dual crossword Why are care workers deemed ‘low skilled’ when it’s a job not many can do well?

T

HE GOVERNMENT still hasn’t published a promised paper on the future of adult social care, nor did Theresa May live up to her promise, made back in March, to “put the state-funded system on a more secure and sustainable footing.”

Southwark Council’s cabinet member for finance says not knowing whether key grants will even exist in the next year or so is unprecedented in modern times.

A government consumed by our future relationship with Europe is leaving key decisions about what we want our country to be like falling by the wayside.

In the meantime, our country’s care system is collapsing.

Too many working people, often with young children of their own, are left struggling to help older family members.

Those with capital can see their life savings and family homes all sold off to pay for hugely expensive residential places. Others may be left with patchy provision, or trapped in hospitals they can’t leave because there aren’t enough spaces available.

Despite the gruelling difficulties, Southwark’s adult social care has been very well protected.

We are in a much better position than many in the country, with a council able to use the income it gains from a healthy local economy.

But according to Age UK, the number of over-65s in the country will nearly double by 2035.

As people are living longer, but often with chronic life-limiting conditions, the number needing home help or moving into residential care will continue to grow.

Worryingly, many care staff are EU nationals, and there is widespread concern that current workforce shortages will only get worse as it’s an industry considered “low skilled”.

This means any tightening of migration after we leave the EU, and drop in migration could make it even harder to recruit for these jobs, or see people leave to stay within the bloc.

Anyone who has had the emotionally and physically draining task of caring for a seriously ill or elderly relative will know that not many people are suited to the task – and the skill needed to do it.

By labelling this work ‘low skilled’ and paying to match, we’re saying some of the hardest and most important jobs are the least valued.

That must change – whether we are in the EU or not come the end of October.

A tall tale at the Shard

A VIRAL social media post this week told the story of a woman who apparently went on a first date at The Shard and ordered a bottle of wine for £50.

In fine spirits, she then allegedly ordered two more before realising the actual price was £5,000 – landing her with a ten-year direct debit to the Borough attraction to pay off her eye-watering wine debt.

The story was seized upon by Grazia magazine, who said: ‘It happens to the best of us, right’?

But The Shard’s management company, Real Estate Management Ltd UK, responded categorically that the incident did not happen.

“Real Estate Management UK Ltd has spoken to the restaurant and bar operators within The Shard all of whom have confirmed this alleged incident did not happen on their premises,” it told those sceptically enquiring about the supposed booze bill.

The Grazia article was then swiftly rewritten to include their statement and now reflects that the story is likely an urban myth.

A ‘TRULY revolting’ stink is plaguing commuters at Kennington station, which has been likened to the unmistakable aroma of vomit.

The unknown stench has been filling the nostrils of passengers at the 129-year-old station for months

on end – and now fed-up commuters have asked TfL what on earth is causing it.

Among them are the comedian Rachel Parris, who queried: “Londoners; sorry to be gross but does anyone know why Kennington station now permanently smells of sick? Like, for months now?”

“Good question,” TfL responded, “and one which quite frankly we do not know the answer to.”

Our thoughts are with the poor TfL dogsbody who management has volunteered for the task of “identifying the source” of the mysterious pong in the quango’s bid to find a solution.

OUR SPIES tell us that actress Kate Beckinsale has been spotted around the Tate Modern, sporting a bright blonde hair-do.

Others have reported seeing her being bundled into a posh Mercedes Maybach under the cover of darkness near to the world-famous visitor attraction in Bankside.

The tourist trap is the backdrop to scenes for her latest film, Jolt, which is currently in the early stages of filming.

Described as a ‘millennial action thriller’, the movie sees Beckinsale play a ‘slightly murderous’ bouncer who goes on a revenge rampage after her lover is killed.

Also starring Laverne Cox and Jai Courtney, it is expected to be released at some point next year.

A THREE-PART Channel 4 documentary series is exploring the rise to fame of Bermondsey’s Jade Goody.

The late star first found fame as on the 2002 series of Big Brother, before sadly losing her battle with cervical cancer in 2009, aged just 27.

‘Jade: The Reality Star Who Changed Britain’ examines her ‘roller-coaster’ life, including the highs and extreme lows of her fame.

The hard-hitting series moved viewers to tears with its first episode as it recounted the tough upbringing of Jade, who grew up on Bermondsey’s Dickens Estate.

“Seeing Jade through 2019 glasses is so shocking - how young she really was, the headlines, the hatred,” said one viewer.

“Feels like such a short time ago she was here, but so much has changed. Shame she can't see it.”

“I had the pleasure to know her well and her life wasn’t an easy one,” added friend Adam Brooks.

“Celebrity land would expose naivety and mistakes in most of us.

She had a big heart.”

An emotional Davina McCall, who hosted the TV series during the period in which Jade appeared on the show, featured on the first episode to talk about her impressions of ‘Bermondsey’s princess’.

“I remember Jade saying how she’s always looked after mum”, said McCall.

“I would look at her and think, God, you’ve gone into this first foray into being yourself and escaping that past life of drugs and addiction and then turning that around... it was nothing short of fricking

Family desperate to bring Oliver home after falling from balcony on holiday in Portugal

Her mum, Jackiey Budden, also featured on the documentary to talk about her pride in her daughter – and talked candidly about Jade’s troubled upbringing amid her parents’ struggles with drugs.

Between Jade’s diagnosis and her tragic death on Mother’s Day in 2009, around half-a-million extra cervical screenings are thought to have taken place as a result of her legacy.

However, a decade on, doctors in Southwark have warned people not to forget Jade’s message as national rates for the potentially life-saving test have seen drops nationally, particularly among young women.

The first episode aired on Wednesday, August 7 at 9pm, with the remaining two episodes airing at the same time on August 14 and August 21 respectively.

THE FAMILY of a Walworth man on life support in Portugal after falling from a balcony are desperately trying to raise £30,000 to bring him back to London.

Oliver Hillier, a trainee firefighter and carer for his mum, fell from the second floor of a hotel balcony on July 22, while on a family holiday in Madeira, Portugal. The circumstances leading up to the fall are still unknown.

Doctors placed him in a medically induced coma and have performed brain surgery, but he is still fighting for his life.

If he becomes stable enough to move, medics have told the Walworth Road family that bringing him back to the UK by air ambulance will cost in excess of £30,000.

His hospital bills are covered by emergency European Health Insurance, but only until mid-August, as the News understands he did not have travel insurance of his own.

His sister, Rachel Hillier, wrote on her online Go Fund Me page: “We still don’t know how it happened but the whole family are devastated.

“Oliver went on holiday with our mum, nan and his nephew to look after them, as my mum is disabled and it’s my nephew’s first holiday abroad.

“There is nothing he wouldn’t do for anyone, he is the glue that holds us all together and to bring him home will cost £30,000.

“We need him home with us to bring the smile and laughter and light back into our lives. We all know it’s going to be a long road to recovery for him but being in a different country away from his family and friends just doesn’t bear thinking about.”

She said the family were ‘so thankful and amazed’ by the generosity shown by those who had donated already.

Council finance chief says because of Brexit she has no idea how much cash there is for adult social care

CONSUMED BY Brexit, the government is failing to run the country and leaving us in limbo, Southwark Council’s finance head has warned, saying she has no idea how much cash for adult social care they will get in the next year.

Since the coalition government’s austerity drive, Southwark has suffered some of the most brutal cuts in funding – a combined total of £146 million since 2011 - softened in part by the borough’s buoyant economy and the healthy business rates it brings.

Now the council faces twin

challenges; the very real possibility of recession in the event of no-deal, and the constant uncertainty in central government funding as its spending review is continually delayed.

Already, the council says the budget gap for 2019-21 is anywhere from £4 million to £32 million depending on a ‘range of scenarios’.

Cllr Victoria Mills (pictured), the cabinet member for finance, Brexit and performance, told the News: “It is very difficult for us to plan ahead because we don’t have clarity on funding.

“The government is so consumed

by Brexit that the spending review hasn’t happened and isn’t likely to soon.

“We want to see the next 2-3 years ahead and what we can expect to get, but we don’t even have a good idea of what is coming in the next year.

“Usually we’d have at least some indication of funding for several years ahead but there’s a range of grants where we don’t even know if they’ll entirely cease.

“That’s unprecedented, and some are in areas that are in absolute crisis, including special needs education and adult social care.”

In a volte-face, Southwark’s Labour-run administration did eventually come out in support of remain and a people’s vote on a final deal.

But regardless of whether the council is remain or leave, the

biggest thing it needs is certainty, she says, and the government has pick up the reigns: “The government has to start running the country on a daily basis.

“My personal message would be that it’s clear that this madness has gone on for long enough - it’s been three years of total failure.”

The announcement that £20 million of cash will be split between all 343 local authorities as part of the ‘Brexit war chest’ is unlikely to appease Southwark, which has already had to find £2 million for a range of Brexitrelated costs.

And there are the EU-funded projects across London, estimated total some £70 million, also currently up in the air.

Cots donated to allow parents of stillborn babies to spend more time with loved ones

SPECIAL COTS which allow families who have suffered the tragedy of stillbirths to spend precious time with their babies have been unveiled at St Thomas’ Hospital.

The cots contain a cooling unit which means the child can stay with their parents for longer, giving families a chance to say goodbye in their own time.

The apparatus was bought with funds donated by the families and friends of two stillborn babies, and each of the two cots bear a plaque with their name.

The cots can be used when a baby has died after being born prematurely or is stillborn.

Maxine Spencer, director of midwifery at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “These cots make a really big difference.

“They enable the parents to keep their baby nearby with them and gives families an opportunity to make memories, despite the sad circumstances.”

One family who helped donate a cot are Tara and Saminder Matharu, from Slough in Berkshire, who sadly lost their baby girl Mimi to stillbirth in January at a Berkshire hospital where they used an Abi Cot. “It seemed a very fitting tribute to be able to, in such awful circumstances, give other families the chance to have that time with their babies that maybe they wouldn’t if the hospitals didn’t have the Abi Cot,” said Tara.

Vicky Smart, from Kent, fulfilled a promise to her stillborn granddaughter Isabella-Rose by skydiving to raise money to buy a cold cot.

“When I held Isabella for the first time, I promised her that I would raise money to fund a cold cot, so that other families would be able to make the memories that we have,” she said.

“I also wanted to do something that would have Isabella’s name on it so that her memory would live on.”

“It was really special to meet Mimi and Isabella’s families and we’re incredibly grateful to them for what they have done,” added Ms Spencer, director of midwifery.

Around fifteen babies die before, during or soon after birth every day in the UK.

‘The flower beds are weeded and looked after, which makes the surgery entrance more welcoming," said patient Ann, while Angela, a West Dulwich resident, said: “Walking past the front gardens brightens any visit to the surgery.

It’s nice to see it being well looked after.”

Zoe Ferguson, Old Dairy Health Centre assistant practice manager, said the garden helped to make the surgery a great place to work.

"It's been really nice to see patients enjoying the new garden spaces at the front, and to see some of them get involved as volunteers who care for all the spaces, or us as staff, to see the back garden area develop and flourish with flowers and vegetables enhances our working environment," she said.

"We've really enjoyed getting involved with watering the plants."

The GP surgery, which used to be based on Rosendale Road, moved to the new

purpose-built site on Croxted Road last year, and gained permission from Dulwich Estates to create the green space.

Dr Leonard thanked volunteers for their work so far, and said the surgery was exploring how it could be used for different activities, including therapeutic support.

Members of the volunteer group say they are keen for more to join their ranks.

Volunteer Deborah Hyde told the News: “I’ve met lovely people from all walks of life, learned new stuff about gardening, helped shape a garden for the local community to enjoy and I’ve got to eat healthy stuff we’ve grown – what’s not to like?"

Free open-air theatre for the family at The Scoop

ondon’s Free Open Air Theatre Season returns to The Scoop at London Bridge City with the world premiere of The Sea Queen, a one-hour family show about the Irish pirate Grainne O’Malley, and Shakespeare’s popular romantic comedy Twelfth Night, writes Michael Holland...

Amongst the themes, a young cast of performers give hope after bad news with, ‘We Need a Little Christmas’, which is playfully followed by, ‘A Little More Mascara’, sung by James Molyneux, who, determined to banish sadness, expresses his identity through cabaret, declaring, ‘ I’ll strap on my fake boobs again’.

Songs flow seamlessly along, each one stitched onto the next so there is no spoken dialogue, just music and lyrics. A narrative is created through tunes that reveal a story as they are sung and acted out.

A clear message is sent when a battle of the sexes plays out with the men singing, ‘It Takes a Woman’, to which the women defiantly respond with ’Wherever He Ain’t’, while stressing, ‘She’s no meek little lamb’. The themes are as relevant now, but despite issues of gender, sexuality and age this is a show

that unveils a world where innocent optimism was played out on stage, starkly conflicting with reality and to what greets us in modern life, therefore ageing the production to a period of time when ‘the show must go on’.

The songs and dance were performed by an accomplished cast, some obviously classically trained, with Alex Burns standing out as one. Defending her place on the boardwalks from younger, ageist stars keen to replace her, she conveys her vulnerability, singing beautifully.

A must for those, keen on nostalgia and the pure joy of song.

Eurythmics Songbook is a Night of Musical Joy

urythmic Dave Stewart was commissioned by Nile Rogers to bring together a collection of top musicians and singers to recreate his hits for the Eurythmics Songbook, writes Michael Holland...

And didn't he do well! With no Annie Lennox by his side Stewart divided her work between several singers to cover their Songbook, immediately giving lots of people a big chance in the spotlight. I suppose having Nile Rodgers in the mix helps, but he still replaced Lennox with a choir and several singers - including Emeli Sandé and Beverly Knight - who were all at the top of their game. Everyone of those vocalists and musicians excelled themselves; each one had big shoes to fill,

but they stepped right up. It was a truly wonderful thing to see, and by the end of the show the audience was like, 'Annie who?'

Seriously, though, this ensemble did everything right to ease any anxieties we might have had. They sang and played and danced and the audience sang and danced along with them. The logistics for getting so many people rehearsed and ready for this one-night-only special must have been a feat of magic, but the hard work was worth it. The Eurythmics put out some great tunes in their time and we heard them all tonight.

Nile Rodgers created a great Meltdown 2019, seemingly turning the South Bank into a 24 hour disco, and the annual event should be on everyone’s list of summer things to do.

The productions form an integral part to the programming for Summer by the River festival which runs throughout August.

As with all the events here, there’s no need to book – just turn up and take a seat! There’s room for 1,000 people at every performance.”

These two plays and their two respective heroines, Grainne and Viola, will place the stories of strong, independent women at the heart of our season. It will also be the first year that one of the plays of William Shakespeare is being presented by the Company.

Telling classic narratives in modern ways, with strong female role models, is central to the approach being taken by this season’s director, Rae McKen. McKen said: “I believe that the free season of theatre at The Scoop provides an opportunity for audiences from all backgrounds (young and old, seasoned theatregoers and first timers, and those for whom the cost of theatre is prohibitive) to see excellent shows in a wonderful, communal setting. This year I am so happy to have the opportunity to direct a wonderful, talented cast, as diverse as our audiences in one of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies as well as the tale of Grainne O’Mhaille.”

I’VE FOLLOWED the career of Rotherhithe artist Ed Gray for many years and could always see how his paintings fit into the historical landscape of London at large.

He has covered most of our capital, and its people in all their various realities, in expansive cityscapes that are snapshots of every little intricacy of those places and people, so I was always intrigued to know why he focussed on one place when he painted Bar Italia, a coffee bar in Soho; a coffee bar, I thought, amongst many. But then I asked him what was special about it he told me this: ‘From the moment you cross the threshold you are transported back into your past. Nothing has changed in there in the 30 years that I’ve been visiting - the smiles are as warm, the staff are as professional and the coffee is the best in London. But what you are really paying for is a ringside seat into the soap opera of Soho… Nino and the Polledri family and staff have brought a little slice of

Italian style to the streets of London for over 70 years, and with my painting I was able to give something back to them.’

So, knowing that every one of us has spent time in the West End I arranged a meeting with Nino Polledri, the patriarch who has been at Bar Italia and Little Italy, their restaurant next door, from the beginning; pretty much since he was born in City Road in 1936.

Nino is a gourmand, an epicurean, the epitome of bonhomie when entertaining around a table. ‘Can you bring a red and a white, please,’ was how our coming together began. And I bonded right there. He spoke of how his family came here for a better life and began with a Covent Garden café, which was great until Italian men were interned during the war along with everyone else that weren’t British. But the womenfolk soldiered on to keep the business going until Mr Polledri was released.

After the chef and Nino had a discussion in Italian our orders were in. The Boss had a simple Parma ham and Melon starter, while I had the calamari. Squid is a versatile creature that can be cooked in many ways, but so many restaurants get it wrong. Here it was perfect. It looked good, tasted

marshmallows, which I deem heroic!

Nino’s sons and daughter are in charge now, so the sumptuousness of the feast was courtesy of them, but meeting the father figure of it all, and listening to the history over a wonderful three hours, I know why Ed Gray painted this iconic place in London’s history.

There is also an excellent fixed price menu.

THE DAMAGE

Nino continued the tale of the Polledris and how they opened several businesses in Soho with just Bar Italia and Little Italy remaining as the flagship from over 80 years of serving London and its visitors. We discussed the menu with Ed Gray’s painting on its cover, and I heard stories about the people portrayed that I can’t repeat.

The wine was kicking in.

The main courses arrived with a flourish. I had a side order of chunky chips and they were good. Very good.

But the main attraction was the Veal Milanese, and Welsh Lamb Chops (Nino insisted I try a little of two mains), and these great pieces of meat were cooked simply but perfectly. The lamb absolutely melted. There was some broccoli and salad involved as well, and the dressing was remarkable. I said so, and Nino told me the secret family recipe. The wine had kicked in.

It was then explained to me how you should alternate your liqueurs with coffees. At this point I was believing anything, so the next half hour was a blur of espresso, grappa, espresso, prosecco, espresso, grappa (‘Bring the strong one,’ our waiter was told!) And in between all this I ended up with a Chocolate Fondue for a family of four while Mr P sat there enjoying a naughty little Crème Brûlée for one. I need to say I was not aware that this was a sharing dish, but I did only leave one blueberry, one piece of pineapple, and a couple of

n the early morning of February 21, 1803, huge crowds took to the streets around Horsemonger Lane Gaol, close to present-day Newington Causeway.

The atmosphere was one of profound unrest. This was not lost on Southwark’s police magistrate who reported deep unease with the public mood in the previous days.

It was, in some historians’ view, the largest public gathering seen until the funeral of Lord Nelson after the Battle of Trafalgar. The capital’s militias were on high alert to look out for trouble in the public houses of Southwark.

Calvary took up positions around the goal, and the keeper of the gaol was armed with sky rockets to be launched should there be any disturbance.

Yet the crowds who had taken to the streets ever since the bells of St George’s began ringing at 5am were not revolutionaries – but spectators.

They were there to bear witness to the execution of Colonel Edward Marcus Despard.

Alongside six co-conspirators, the former army officer was implicated in a plot to assassinate King George III, seize the Bank of England and Tower of London to launch a full-scale uprising.

Such was his popularity among the assembled crowd as he was to be hanged, drawn and quartered for high treason – the last ever in England – his gaolers had been hard-pressed to find workmen to erect the execution scaffold.

Perhaps it was because of the volatile public mood.

Or perhaps it was because of the glowing character reference given by Admiral Lord Nelson, whom Despard had served with in Honduras as part of his twenty-year stint in the Caribbean. (‘In all that period of time no man could have shown more zealous attachment to his sovereign and to his country than Colonel Despard did,’ Nelson told magistrates at the trial.)

But magistrates waived the taking out and burning of the bowels before

the victim’s face before dividing the body into four parts.

The drawing, however, could not be commuted – there had never been a conviction for high treason without dragging the sentenced to the gallows in a carriage without wheels.

So Despard was seated backwards upon some hay bales and bumped along the cobbled courtyard until the ‘drawing’ was deemed complete.

It was a bit of a farcical affair.

Despard burst out laughing, despite his impending death, and labelled it ‘nonsensical mummery’. The sentence was not passed again.

As the fifty-year-old former Superintendent of what became British Honduras took to the gallows, he was permitted a final statement to the enormous crowd assembled before him.

He was warned, however, that any kind of radical or revolutionary speech would result in the platform being immediately dropped.

Calmly he insisted on his innocence and told the crowd that he was no guiltier than any of those listening to him.

Cautioned by the Sheriff, he finished by called out to his ‘fellow citizens’ his desire for freedom humanity and justice to prevail over tyranny – and was then hanged until he was dead.

How, then, had a man with a dedicated life-long military service to his country been convicted of High Treason – which to his dying breath he vehemently denied?

On November 16, 1802, the authorities swooped on the Oakley Arms pub on what is now Baylis Road in SE1 and arrested a gathering of conspirators, some of whom were carrying illegal political literature.

They were accused of plotting to kill the Monarch. But Despard protested his innocence from the beginning. His wife, also portrayed in the BBC drama, also took up his case with the authorities.

Their partnership itself was unusual.

Catherine and Edward were a mixedrace couple, having met while the Colonel was serving in the Caribbean.

Despite being uncommon at the time, when they arrived in London in 1790 with their son James, it appears few contemporaries passed comment: perhaps they simply did not want to be the first to pass judgement.

Earlier historians have argued that the doomed treason plot can be explained

by Despard’s disordered mental thinking.

This was the case that prosecutors had made at the trial: that deluded Despard had believed the moment to be ripe for full-scale revolution.

But as the historian Mike Jay, author of The Unfortunate Colonel Despard argues, the conspiracy in which Despard was implicated as ringleader was implausible to begin with.

During the 1790s, Despard had committed himself fully to the struggle for radical political reform, partly due to reading Paine’s Rights of Man. These campaigns worried the British Government considerably. With Britain at war with revolutionary France, moves towards political reform were viewed as steps to revolution.

Widespread protests and petitions were caused by economic hardship as a result of the war with France, too, further stoking the Government’s fears.

The Anglo-Irish Despard’s membership of the London Corresponding Society, a working class Irish association had also provoked distrust.

This eventually to his arrest: In 1798, the authorities swooped on the society after one of its members was found carrying plans for an Irish republican uprising to the French.

Despard and others were arrested, and when the Irish Great Rebellion broke out a few months later, imprisoned without trial.

He spent three years in prison before habeas corpus was reinstated and he was freed.

By late 1802, however, Britain and France were no longer at war, Ireland had been incorporated into the union, and Napoleon had sailed to Egypt where his fleet was destroyed by Nelson in the battle of the Nile.

It’s unclear, then, what threat Despard could have posed to the King.

In the end, says Jay, there was no real evidence linking the Colonel to Irish or French revolutionaries in a plot to overthrow King George III. Being caught in in a pub surrounded by working men and soldiers carrying illegal oaths - coupled with his own radical inclinations – it seems was enough to convict him.

SURREY WERE beaten by nine runs by Gloucestershire on Duckworth Lewis Stern calculations, suffering their sixth defeat in eight Vitality Blast outings this season, when a rain delay left them needing to score 52 from another 4.1 overs at the Kia Oval.

They managed 42 of them, taking their total of 52 for 2 from 7.5 overs when the rain came, in reply to Gloucestershire’s 165 for 8, to an

eventual 94 for 2. When they were left needing 25 from the last over, however, the game was already all but over.

Sam Curran swung Benny Howell for six and Andrew Tye for two more maximums in the final over to reach a defiant 51 not out from 35 balls, while Ollie Pope finished on an unbeaten 13.

But Howell, fellow medium-pacer Ryan Higgins and fast bowler Tye – who between them sent down the 25 balls after the restart – kept their cool despite understandably greasy conditions to earn Gloucestershire a third win of the T20 campaign and

keep them in contention for quarterfinal qualification from the south group.

Gloucestershire’s 20-over total was built on a 15-ball 30 up front from Miles Hammond, James Bracey’s 25ball 33 and 40 from 28 balls from Ian Cockbain in the middle overs, and then a useful 22 not out at the end by Jack Taylor, from 12 balls and with four well-struck fours.

Surrey suffered two early blows when Aaron Finch, their big-hitting Australian opener, edged a rising ball from Chris Liddle to keeper Bracey to depart for 12 to the last ball of the fourth over, and Will Jacks was caught at extra cover off a leading edge for 15 in slow left-armer Tom Smith’s first over.

Sanderstead 128 (40.2) lost to Dulwich 168 (49.4) by 40 runs

DULWICH STAGED a remarkable recovery to defeat bottom club Sanderstead by 40 runs last weekend and move into second place in Division 2 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship.

Dulwich were put into bat in difficult batting conditions amid very high winds, to face the pace of George Jackson and Nicky Wilson. Skipper Jackson struck with the second ball of the match in bowling Veer Patel. Sam Ellison fell to Wilson, but Chris Purshouse, who batted purposefully in making 18 off 30 balls, had added 23 in 4.2 overs with keeper Will Bancroft when Gregg McLean removed them both in his first over.

Nick Gunning kept the scoreboard moving by making 21 off 30 balls, mostly in company with Elliot Miles, but both fell to Sandeep Kuckreja to make it 76-6 after 20 overs. Salaar Waqar and acting skipper Jon Lodwick added 28 before Waqar was caught

behind for 15, and Simon Harwood fell two overs later to leave Dulwich precariously placed on 106-8. Six runs later Lodwick edged Simon Carter straight into the hands of the slip fielder, who dropped it. This miss was to change the course of the match.

Lodwick had been joined by Sahir Hussain, who gave him crucial support by defending obdurately in making 4 off 30 balls, while his skipper, who had spent 53 balls over his first 14 runs, now went on the attack. The stand had put on 47 in 12 overs when Hussain was caught behind off Kuckreja.

Alex Gledhill helped Lodwick add 15 for the last wicket before the captain was caught in the deep to give Kuckreja his fourth wicket with two balls of the innings remaining. Lodwick’s 52, off 97 balls, was his second half century of the season and only the fourth by a Dulwich batsman this year. The last two wickets had added 62 runs to lift the score to 168 and give the bowlers something to defend.

Sanderstead decided to hold back their best batsmen, but the ploy backfired spectacularly. Lodwick conceded just six runs off his first four overs, while Hussain was even more miserly in starting with four consecutive maidens. Lodwick then

made a double bowling change with devastating effect as Harwood took two wickets in his first over and Gunning struck with his first ball to leave Sanderstead reeling on 6-3 after ten overs. Carter helped Jackson add 33 for the fourth wicket before falling to Miles for 11, and the captain could only watch as three more batsmen succumbed as they declined to 78-7 after 27 overs.

Jackson was then joined by Esmatullah Zadran in a stand of 42 for the eighth wicket that threatened to put his side back in the game, but Jackson’s dismissal, caught behind off Lodwick for 47 off 86 balls, signalled the end.

Miles took a return catch in the next over and last man McLean was run out to leave Zadran stranded on 37 off 49 balls. Sanderstead were all out for 128 to give Dulwich an unlikely victory by 40 runs. The wickets were shared around, with Lodwick, Harwood, Miles and Gunning taking two each and Hussain one.

With Bank of England and Stoke D’Abernon both losing, Dulwich leapfrog both of them into second place. They have another crucial match this weekend when they play host to Stoke D’Abernon, who have now slipped into fourth place twelve points behind them.

When Hammond’s violent cameo ended with a carve to deep cover off Jade Dernbach, it was left to Bracey to join Michael Klinger and add 24 for the second wicket before the Gloucestershire captain top-edged a pull at Sam Curran to deep square leg to go for 12.

Bracey played some fine shots as Gloucestershire made it to 82 for 2 at the halfway point, but he was caught at long on off Sam Curran in the 12th over and the visitors needed a busy 17 from Higgins for forward momentum until Cockbain took two straight fours and three twos off the 16th over, bowled by Dernbach and costing 15.

Cockbain then swung South Africa leg spinner Tahir for a massive six over mid-wicket but, later in the same 17th over, perished to a catch at long on and Howell, Tye and Smith all fell in the frenetic final overs as only Taylor’s judicious late hitting – when he could get the strike – enabled Gloucestershire to post a competitive total.

Fisher out of FA Cup

FISHER CONFIRMED last weekend that Luke Haidarovic had signed on for a sixth season with the club.

Haidarovic has scored 24 goals in 80 games for the Fish and is a firm fan favourite.

Fisher boss Allan Fenn has also swooped for 24-year-old Isaac Nkosi, who came through the youth set-up at Charlton Athletic.

Nkosi can play in the centre of defence or as a defensive midfielder and also had spells with Woking, Bishops Stortford, Enfield Town, Ilford and Aveley, the latter who he is dual registered with.

Meanwhile Fisher are out of the FA Cup after losing 3-2 last weekend to Hanworth Villa in the extra preliminary round.

The hosts raced into a 2-0 lead by the 41st minute before Billy Brown pulled one back and skipper Robert Brown made it 2-2 after the break.

But Villa booked their place in the next round with a late strike.

The consolation for Fisher is a cheque for £750 for exiting at this stage. Fenn’s side travel to Tunbridge Wells this Saturday in the SCEFL Premier Division as they aim to build on four points from their first two games.

Bermondsey judo club win best medal in 30 years Fred Itiose

IT WAS probably the furthest anyone from the Bermondsey Tokei Judo Club had travelled for a competition when Fred Itiose journeyed to the European Veterans Judo Championships in Gran Canaria, Spain recently.

Itiose, who is a detective with the Met Police working in Brent in north-west London, is the highest graded competitive player at Tokei but it was still the highest level of competition he had entered in many years.

He fought in the +100kg section and was the only British player against in an international field with competitors from Moldova, Hungary, Belgium, Germany, France and Spain.

After a lot of waiting around, because the heavyweights fought last, Itiose eventually got on the mat in the afternoon. He quickly progressed through to the semi-final.

There he met the Moldovan competitor, Viorel Marinescu, a

giant even in comparison to Fred.

Ultimately the Moldovan defeated Itiose and went on the claim Gold.

Disappointed but not disheartened, Itiose refocused and prepared to fight the Frenchman who had lost in the other semi-final. Itiose was quickly back to winning ways as he dispatched his opponent with a clean uchi-mata (inner thigh throw) within the first minute to end the contest.

Itiose picked up his third-place bronze medal and promptly WhatsApp'd his results to his teammates back home making it a weekend to remember for everyone at Tokei Judo Club. It was the best medal for the club in the last 30 years.

Tokei Judo Club train in a purposebuilt dojo off Tooley Street on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with Brazilian Ju Jitsu (BJJ) training on Thursdays and Saturdays. They are a club with a significant proportion of more mature players returning to the sport. New players are always very welcome.

BEN THOMPSON reckons if Millwall fans recreate the same atmosphere they did on the opening day then it will spur the Lions on to bigger and better things this season.

Lions supporters made it a cup-like atmosphere on the opening day as the hosts defeated Preston 1-0 at The Den. Millwall face Sheffield Wednesday at home this Saturday, aiming to build on a win and a draw in the Championship this season.

The Lions defeated the Lilywhites thanks to Jed Wallace’s goal.

“Everything about it was brilliant, we worked hard in pre-season and it paid off in the first game,” Thompson said.

“We’ve still got 40-odd games to go but the atmosphere was second to none as always, with 15,000.

“The noise towards the end of the game when everyone’s knackered and blowing up a bit pushed us on to see out the victory.

“When the fans turn up in their numbers they can get right behind us and spur us on. Towards the end of that game I felt tired and leggy. But the chants, the noise they create in the stadium really pushes you on in the final ten or fifteen minutes. That’s really needed and if we can get that this season then we’ll do a lot better than we did last season.”

Thompson was involved in Millwall’s winner, when he dropped a shoulder to go past Alan Browne and find Connor Mahoney, whose left-wing cross was turned in by Wallace.

Portsmouth last season has hugely brought on his game. But he was initially disappointed to find himself at Pompey at the start of last season.

“At the time I was a bit down, I was a bit gutted because I knew I wasn’t going to be involved in a Millwall shirt,” Thompson admitted. “The loan was the best option for me to go out and get games and get my confidence back.

“It all worked out in the end and I’m back playing in a Millwall shirt. I’m grateful to Kenny Jackett and Joe Gallen for what they did with me, they brought on my game massively and I feel so much more confident in myself now.

“Kenny knew the situation at Millwall. He wanted to play me at Portsmouth, and I was three games in and did really well but then had a couple of games where I wasn’t really at it. He was speaking to me all the

time, making sure I was alright and settling down in Portsmouth.

“He pulled me aside and said, ‘you grab the shirt, this is your shirt to win’.

The communication between me and him was brilliant and he gave me the confidence to go out and play the best football I could. It’s helped me ever since. After that I played nearly every game and it was a great learning curve.

“I’m just trying to replicate that now and do it for the club I love. The manager here has more confidence in me now so it’s worked out.

“I’m not afraid now to do things on the pitch that I know I can do but maybe before I held back a bit. There were times last season when I felt so confident I was doing things out of the blue and off the cuff. It’s a brilliant feeling to have, going out there with no fear.

“The first game of the season I was a

bit nervous, that’s normal, but once you’re out there you’ve got to express yourself. I want to carry this on.”

Millwall fan Thompson is now one of the first names on the team sheet, though he knows he can’t take anything for granted after Harris said he would rotate his starting XI more this season.

And Thompson knows giving it his all on the training pitch will increase his chances of playing.

He added: “The manager, Dave Livermore, Adam Barrett, they’ve all been at us making sure we’re training properly. The standards last year weren’t the best they could be so this year they’re right on us.

“All the players want to do well, we want to train at 100 per cent and attack every day. That’s massively important this year, that we keep training standards high and take that into a match-day.”

Matt finish helps Millwall make their point

Introduced in the 64th minute at The Hawthorns last Saturday, he played like he had a point to make. Neil Harris said recently he won’t be as rigid picking his sides this season, but Smith must have felt he deserved to start after his performance against Preston.

Almost immediately on his entering the pitch Millwall were transformed into a side that packed a punch in attack, something they had lacked for the previous hour.

Smith unsettled the Baggies’ defence and gave the Lions’ attack a central focal point they hadn’t had. Tom Bradshaw had started and if he is still lacking match fitness after almost ten months out then this was a perfect test. He ran the channels as best he could and tried to close down a West Brom defence that moved the ball over and back.

He didn’t give up on lost causes and at one point chased down Semi Ajayi, who was trying to shepherd the ball over the end-line, before winning possession and earning a free-kick.

Millwall couldn’t quite release Bradshaw to get a chance on goal and spent over an hour being in a solid defensive shape as West Brom dominated the ball.

But then, after going behind to Kyle Bartley’s header from Matt Phillips’ freekick, they did that thing they do so well when through stubbornness and disruption they shift the play up towards the opposition goal. They get free-kicks and corner kicks and stop counter-attacks however they can, Jed Wallace booked for fouling when the hosts led 1-0.

It’s a huge strength of whatever side Harris puts out. They never look beaten.

And it was from a corner they got their equaliser. Jake Cooper thought he had been fouled as he challenged for Shaun Williams’ delivery. But the complaints didn’t go on for long, Wallace recycled the ball and crossed for Alex Pearce whose header was

deflected back to Smith. He stuck out a long right leg and the ball rippled the roof of the West Brom goal, behind which was the away contingent.

Smith turned and raced towards them, leaping into the air in celebration. He has the look of a cult figure among Lions fans already.

It’s early days in the league, but Millwall will relish building on this good start when Sheffield Wednesday come to The Den this Saturday.

THERE ARE few things in football more special than a player making his debut for his boyhood club. Billy Mitchell got to do that last season for Millwall, and even better, he did it alongside his best mate.

“It was an unbelievable experience.

I had an inkling I might get on and it finally came true,” the young midfielder recalls. With twelve minutes to go and Millwall’s Championship safety assured, Neil Harris threw him on against Wigan Athletic in the final game of last season, along with George Alexander.

“Running out onto the pitch in front of all the Millwall fans, hearing them singing - and to do it alongside my mate George was an unbelievable experience,” he tells the News.

“Hopefully there’s a few more to come.”

George and Billy were among eight youngsters to sign professional terms with the club this year and as far as Mitchell is concerned, joining Millwall was a no-brainer and a natural step in his footballing progression.

“I grew up in Orpington but my dad’s family’s all from Bermondsey way, so Millwall’s always been in our blood and the team I grew up supporting,” he says. “It’s a pleasure to play for them and logistically it works great for me, being a local boy.

“I’ve watched many Millwall games, the atmosphere’s always great and that’s one of the things that enticed me to play for them, really.

It’s a pleasure now being on that pitch.”

Some of the players who he used to cheer on from the stands he can now call his team-mates and Mitchell picks out a couple of figures who have helped in his development.

“Shaun Williams, who’s been at the club for a few years,” he says. “Ben Thompson’s obviously come into the

fold recently and he’s someone I look to model myself on.”

Having that exposure to the first team has been an important part of Mitchell’s education and he recognises how useful it will be for his game in the long-term. “It’s great experience and, to be fair, all the firstteam guys have been really welcoming. They’ve really helped develop me into the player I am today.

“The tempo’s considerably higher and the physicality is much stronger compared to [under]-23s football but that’s something I look to embrace and it’ll help me become a better player, for sure.”

This is Mitchell’s first newspaper

interview but you wouldn’t know it.

He is confident and assured, both in his manner and playing ability. “How many takes do I get?” he jokes, taking a seat in the stand at The Den – a place he is so familiar with.

He played his first competitive match of the new season last week, a 1-1 draw with Burnley under-23s at The Den on Friday afternoon. It was a decent run-out against physically tough opposition but Millwall grew into the game and Alexander was in the right place at the right time to net the equaliser.

“Classic George Alexander goal, in at the back post!” Mitchell smiles. “That’s what he does for our team, scores goals and helps us stay in games, so I’m

pleased for him.”

Mitchell also got to line up alongside new loan signing Jayson Molumby, the Irish midfielder who joined from Brighton in the summer transfer window. Fresh from impressive performances captaining the Ireland under-21s at the Toulon Tournament, there is hope that he can have an impact on the first team this season.

“Since Jayson’s come in I’ve had quite a good relationship with him,” Mitchell says. “It’s nice to play with a lad with some international experience and I feel I can learn a bit off him. I get on with him really well.”

As for Mitchell’s own ambitions, he is getting his head down and just concentrating on the task at hand, as

he sets some goals for this season. “I hope to have established myself in the 23s as a mainstay, performing well regularly and hopefully giving the gaffer [Neil Harris] something to think about in terms of breaking into his first team.”

“Obviously still being young, there’s still plenty of time to improve,” he adds. “I’ve had a talk with the gaffer, he’s been really good to me and really supportive.

Hopefully if things go well and I can continue to perform in the 23s, then I can be in and around the first team.”

With that kind of attitude, Mitchell could well be on course for a memorable career at his boyhood club.

NOT MANY players get standing ovations for their contributions so early in a competition that most managers probably secretly breathe a sigh of relief at exiting at this stage.

There are far more important challenges ahead and Millwall and West Brom knew they weren’t going to win the EFL Cup. It’s all about the league for both, the Lions one of the relegation favourites before the season started, Slaven Bilic’s side expected to challenge for promotion.

Lions boss Neil Harris said there would be a pre-season element to this for Millwall as he looked to give players competitive action.

Jason McCarthy, Jayson Molumby and Luke Steele made their debuts, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson started his first game for the Lions, Shaun Hutchinson – making his 100th Millwall appearance – and Jiri Skalak for the first time this season.

All made significant contributions on a night that, far from having a pre-season friendly feel despite 15,000 fewer in the

gate than last Saturday in the Championship game between the sides, saw Millwall battle their way back after being battered in the first fifteen minutes when it looked like they could ship a heavy beating.

Molumby was superb, starting his first senior competitive game in almost two years. He only turned 20 last week but he looks like he has the full package. He is technically accomplished, has a good passing range and when Millwall worked their way back into the game the Ireland under-21 captain was at the centre of it, demanding possession, moving the ball forward, turning out of danger and snapping into tackles.

McCarthy and Hutchinson made crucial blocks and interventions and Murray Wallace, alongside Hutchinson, was superb. He has been ultra-consistent even if it’s only been three games.

Skalak set up two goals from a free-kick and a corner and Harris picked the winger out for praise later in the dressing room.

He has had a long and frustrating journey to this point, but the player the Lions squad and staff got to their feet to applaud

when he entered the dressing room had an even longer and tougher one.

This was only Tom Bradshaw’s fourth start for Millwall – three of them coming at The Hawthorns – and his team-mates, manager and backroom figures showed their appreciation for him after his first goal in 367 days.

Harris was asked afterwards what Bradshaw’s reaction had been to the spontaneous show from his team-mates.

“He was embarrassed because he’s a good kid,” Harris said, smiling. “But he deserved it and that’s just the appreciation that we have for him.

“Honestly, more than anything, it’s the camaraderie we’ve got in the group, the players and staff together.

“We’re going to get beaten this season.

We could lose a couple of games in a row, we might lose three in a row. But we’ve got to make sure that camaraderie we’ve got at the moment, that spirit we’ve got, never dwindles.

“It’s relentless, the country we play in and the level we play at and the teams we play. We played a top West Brom side with some talented players that cost a lot

of money. But I thought we were better than them.”

It certainly didn’t look like it would pan out like that initially. Harris had made eight changes from the weekend – Bilic nine, though the former West Ham boss has far greater squad depth – and some of those that started are not at full match fitness.

This was Bradshaw’s thirteenth game in a year, Molumby’s early career was disrupted by a long-term injury, Steele only played twice last season and Bodvarsson only had two training sessions before joining in the summer.

In the league game between the sides Millwall blocked a path through central midfield mostly successfully, Ben Thompson dropping in to help Ryan Leonard and Shaun Williams.

West Brom had learned from that and whenever they won the ball back in the opening quarter of an hour on Tuesday they immediately transferred it beyond the Lions’ protective midfield cover to unleash the likes of Kyle Edwards and Grady Diangana running at the back four.

It was only nine minutes in but the goal had been coming. Steele was unlucky that Diangana’s fierce shot bounced off him onto the crossbar and back into play where Charlie Austin, on his debut, was quickest to the ball to head in from two yards.

Soon Austin was in again but when he could have taken the ball closer to goal he opted to try to lob Steele, but he couldn’t get the ball over the goalkeeper.

Millwall’s defence was running back towards their own goal too often after being turned, and there were several hairy moments in their box with Hutchinson, Wallace and McCarthy making crucial interventions, and Leonard getting back from midfield to help out.

Without a true targetman the visitors had to play keep ball and work smart openings and that’s what they did.

In the 28th minute Skalak had the chance to show his set-piece quality, and his curled delivery was perfect and Bradshaw headed home his first competitive goal since August 11, 2018, for Barnsley in a 2-0 League One win at Bradford.

“That’s what any striker wants,” Bradshaw said, “early balls and balls into that area where the defender doesn’t know whether to head it or leave it. That’s what I thrive off. It was a brilliant cross from Jiri, he put in a few of those.”

Millwall were a different side now to earlier. Bodvarsson cleverly slipped Skalak through on an angle and goalkeeper Jonathan Bond rushed off his line to block a thumping shot before quickly getting to his feet to tip Aiden O’Brien’s curled follow-up around the post.

O’Brien didn’t have long to wait for his next chance, and it was typical of him to be in the right place in the box.

It was ten minutes after the break when the ball broke off Wallace from Skalak’s corner and O’Brien scrambled a finish over the line from a matter of inches out, his first goal of the season.

Bilic sent for his creative players with Romaine Sawyers and Filip Krovinovic coming on. It had been planned to give Molumby an hour and Williams came on for his possible

future senior international team-mate.

Mahlon Romeo’s introduction for O’Brien meant a rejig as McCarthy went to left-back and Shane Ferguson to the right of midfield. Harris has built a squad with plenty of versatile players.

Millwall were under pressure protecting their lead but Bodvarsson and Bradshaw showed they are developing an understanding when the latter flicked inside to the Iceland international and received the return ball to get the side up the pitch, however briefly.

“There has been a lot of work on the training ground with all the strikers,” Bradshaw said. “It’s all about knowing where the other person is going to be and building those relationships. I enjoyed it.”

West Brom came back, Sawyers saw a shot deflected over before Steele was well-positioned to gather Krovinovic’s curler into his chest.

Then deep into injury-time, Semi Ajayi, who had seen a first-half goal ruled out for a foul on a Lions defender, seemed certain to send the tie to

penalties. There were celebrations from the home fans but Ajayi had only managed to find the side-netting from six yards when he should have scored.

That was the last chance. Bradshaw then had his moment, and Millwall have a second-round tie at Oxford.

NEIL HARRIS has some tough selection calls this Saturday after a number of understudies so far this season impressed at The Hawthorns on Tuesday evening.

Tom Bradshaw will surely keep his place after scoring his first Millwall goal this week, with Matt Smith likely to be recalled up front.

“I had a fair few games in preseason and it was just about getting minutes in the tank, that’s the only way you get your match sharpness and fitness back,” Bradshaw said.

“I feel like I’m almost there now if not there. I’m ready whenever the gaffer calls upon me.

“The lads did exceptional to beat Preston the first game, and then there were changes the following Saturday. The gaffer is going to pick a team to try to beat the opposition, and that can differ massively whether we’re playing against a direct side or a footballing side.

“The gaffer is great tactically and knows which team to put out. I’m sure it will vary from week to week.”

“The key to our first three games has been our solidity, our reliability behind the ball to force teams into very few chances against us,” Harris said.

“But then when we’ve got it I thought the counter-attack was really good [Tuesday night]. Our possession, we don’t always get the credit due for that. I thought we deserved to win the game.”

TOM BRADSHAW admitted his time out injured has given him a new appreciation of playing – and revealed watching Lee Gregory helped him understand what it takes to prosper as a Millwall striker.

Bradshaw scored his first competitive goal in 367 days as Millwall came from behind to defeat West Brom on Tuesday night.

Bradshaw headed in Jiri Skalak’s freekick after Charlie Austin’s debut Baggies goal, before Aiden O’Brien’s 55thminute winner booked Millwall a trip to Oxford in the second round.

transfer fee to bring Bradshaw to The Den from Barnsley last year, but the striker tore his cruciate ligament against Brentford last November and missed the rest of the season.

Lions boss Neil Harris kept him involved, urging him to study how Gregory played. Gregory was arguably the Lions’ most important player towards the end of last season, helping them beat the drop before leaving for Stoke on a free transfer this summer.

Bradshaw’s goal was his first in his thirteenth appearance for the club.

“It was an amazing feeling,” he said.

“To have an injury like that so early in my Millwall career, it was frustrating sitting on the sidelines watching the boys without being able to help. It’s been amazing to be back with the group and to score my first goal is a brilliant feeling.

year I feel like I learned a lot watching the way Greggs played, he was at the club for years and mastered the way a striker should play for Millwall.

“Speaking to the gaffer as well I feel like I’ve got a really good understanding of what he wants from me. Hopefully I can apply that and put in some big performances.

“Greggs was instrumental to the success Millwall have had the last four or five years, he’s a great player. I learned from the way he put in a shift, held the ball up, made channel runs and I tried to take what I could from watching and apply it to my own game. Hopefully I can perform to a similar level this year.

Bradshaw, 27, insisted he was always positive during his recovery.

“The lads were a really big help,” he said. “It’s a long time to be out and you naturally feel a little bit isolated but the lads, the gaffer, the whole club was brilliant in keeping me involved.

Everyone rallied around which was brilliant for me.

“Anyone that knows me knows I’m quite a positive person so I didn’t dwell on the negatives. My daughter was born a couple of weeks after [the injury] so that was the biggest distraction I could have asked for in those couple of months.

“It was just about achieving small milestones and it was all worth it for a night like [Tuesday].”

Ireland under-21 captain Molumby was making his first senior competitive start in almost two years and demonstrated his excellent touch and passing ability before being replaced by Shaun Williams after 62 minutes.

Molumby, 20, is on a seasonlong loan from Brighton and there are high hopes he can make a real impact for the Lions.

“I thought he was outstanding,” Harris said. “He’s got a lot to learn with us, of course he has, because of the style we play, but he played with Chris Hughton last year in a 4-4-2 and the year before that.

“I thought when we dominated the second half of that first half he was class. I think he showed the fans who travelled and the ones who watched it back home or listened to it how good a player he is. And he is going to be a top player.

“That’s his first 60 minutes in senior football for us so there’s going to be a little bit of beddingin time to get going again.

“The competition is key for us to be able to keep rotating the squad and give people minutes.

I’m really pleased with individual performances and the group’s reaction to the changes, and the subs also came on and made an impact.”
