COUNCIL VOWS IT WILL BE A TOP PLACE TO WORK IN LONDON

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has signed up to a mayoral scheme which sees employers pledge good workplace practices.

Sadiq Khan’s ‘Good Work Standard’, launched at the end of last month, accredits employers meeting criteria such as fair pay, employee diversity and good progression routes.

“I want to make London a fairer city by ensuring that all Londoners get the opportunities that our city gave to me when I was growing up,” said Mr Khan

as he announced the scheme.

“City Hall will now do everything possible to ensure that many more employers – in every sector and of every size – sign up to the Good Work Standard.”

Alongside the standard, City Hall will launch an ‘employment rights hub’ to help Londoners understand their rights, Mr Khan pledged.

Cllr Kieron Williams, (pictured) Southwark’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Modernisation, said the council was ‘delighted’ to be among the local authorities pledging to maintain high employer standards.

MP Neil Coyle pledges support with Southwark Law Centre over the battle for legal aid

NEIL COYLE visited Southwark Law Centre this week to pledge his support for legal aid and help the team support people in Southwark struggling with Universal Credit and the EU settlement scheme.

July 30 marked the 70 years since Clement Attlee’s government established legal aid in 1949, to help people access justice whatever their financial circumstances.

In 2012, the coalition government cut legal aid funding and severely restricted what type of cases could access funded advice and representation in court.

Areas axed included most private family, employment, welfare benefits, housing, debt, clinical negligence, and non-asylum immigration law.

After concerns over a spiralling number of people forced to represent themselves in court, in July the Government announced it would hold a wholesale review.

The Southwark News is proud to be the only independent, paid for newspaper in London.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

Rye traders fear locals might be still avoiding lane

RYE LANE is open for business and traffic once again but traders say footfall is still down.

But traders in Peckham Business Network say many shoppers are still unaware the road is back to normal.

A spokesperson said: “The works began at a time when the British high street is under severe pressure from a growth in online and out-of-town shopping, and traders are calling for Londoners to show their support of the Rye Lane shopping experience.”

A series of events in and around Rye Lane is being held throughout the summer with support from Southwark Council.

Hero moment was caught on CCTV

Manager’s quick thinking saves customer from choking on meatball in restaurant

A QUICK-THINKING SE1 restaurant manager saved one of his customers from choking on meatballs by dashing to his rescue to perform a Heimlich manoeuvre.

Cem Canpolat, who manages the Tas Restaurant on The Cut, was deep in conversation with a colleague when he heard a customer screaming – the first indication that one of his diners was choking.

“He was red in the face and trying to breathe,” said Mr Canpolat. “I remembered the manoeuvre which we learned during the course.

“I heard his wife screaming, because she’d tried to hit his back, but she couldn’t manage it properly.

I was quite shocked.”

The 34-year-old restaurant boss can be seen on footage of the incident on July 27 dashing out

from behind a counter to the diner’s aid to perform the Heimlich manoeuvre, which he learned on a first aid course.

The technique involves applying sudden pressure on the abdomen between the navel and ribcage to dislodge obstructions in the windpipe.

“I tried it about eight times. If he was standing it would’ve been easier to do it maybe. And then he started breathing again,” he said.

“Me and my customer were really happy” he added, but the business did not think to get details of the diner, described as being in his forties.

Mr Canpolat has been hailed a hero by his customers for his quickthinking actions after the Turkish chain shared CCTV footage of what had happened online.

“Well done Cem. That deserves an award,” said one while another added: “Super star! Well done that

man.”

But the modest restaurant boss said he wants the incident to raise awareness of the life-saving manoeuvre and of the need for first aid training.

Staff at the business regularly get first aid training from the London Ambulance Service in Waterloo, as well private lessons, which he urged other businesses to emulate.

“All types of people don’t know where they should get first aid from,” he told the News. “That’s why I’d like to raise awareness of this manoeuvre and first aid generally. “[Having] someone with first-aid training can save someone’s life.”

Luckily the diner was luckily was not seriously hurt after the choking near-miss. “He waited about ten minutes, and then he went back to eating his dinner,” added Mr Canpolat.

A FRESH fundraising appeal has been launched for a well-known Bermondsey boxer to pay for his rehabilitation from life-saving brain surgery.

Lifelong Millwall fan Charlie Wynn, 29, suffered a bleed on the brain during a freak injury while training for his third pro bout.

He was rushed to King’s College Hospital before being transferred to Putney’s Royal Hospital for Neuro-

Disability in May. Now a new fundraising attempt has been launched this week to pay for the boxer’s rehabilitation costs – which has been described by wellwishers as ‘the toughest fight of his life’.

“Alana [Charlie’s wife] and his family wish to bring Charlie home, adapt his residence for his altered needs and fund his long-term care,” states the appeal.

“Even during his pro boxing career, grafter Charlie worked full-time as a self-employed electrician, work he is

of course unable to return to.”

A previous crowd-funder for the ‘cheeky, loving, kind and considerate young man’ set up by his wife Alana in August last year raised over £25,000.

“Our ultimate goal is to get Charlie home,” said the appeal. “His words; “I want to get home and to be able to walk”.

Volunteers have spent 3 years smoking bongs in SE5 hospital

VOLUNTEERS HAVE been smoking bongs at King’s College Hospital for the last three years for scientific research into preventing drug-induced psychosis.

The study is trying to find out what the best balance of THC, which gets users high, to CBD, which has no intoxicating effect.

Both substances are found naturally in cannabis, but stronger versions of the drug – such as high potency street ‘skunk’ - are grown to contain much more THC and very little CBD. It is hoped that by balancing one against the other, the risk of drug-

induced psychosis in users could be reduced.

The volunteers were given a hit of THC and CBD cannabis from a ‘volcano’ bong before undergoing tests to see how CBD affects their experience of being high.

King’s College professor Amir Englund said: “About forty percent of cannabis users experience psychotic effects, strange thoughts, suspicious or even hallucinations, and something we call conceptual disorganisation.

“When given big doses of CBD, people do not experience paranoia, less memory impairment and less likely to experience psychotic effects, so we want to find out, is there a CBD/THC ratio that’s less harmful?”

After inhaling different amounts of cannabis at the start of the test volunteers listen to music and taste chocolate to see if their appreciation of it changes through the day, as well as taking a trip to the shop where they evaluate their social interaction experience.

Although the three year study has now finished the King’s team, who are working with King’s College Hospital and the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust are currently analysing the results.

THE SIX-YEAR-OLD boy reportedly thrown from the viewing platform of the Tate Modern on Sunday afternoon is in a ‘critical but stable’ condition, while a seventeen-year-old has been charged with attempted murder.

The child, a French national visiting the tourist attraction with family, fell around 100ft after allegedly being thrown from the Tate’s viewing platform shortly before 3pm.

He was found on a fifth-floor roof before being airlifted to hospital by the London air ambulance. He has reportedly suffered a bleed to the brain, along with fractures to his spine, legs and arms.

MONEY RAISED in memory of a homeless woman from Forest Hill who died last month will be spent ‘as wisely as possible’ by a volunteer group set up to manage the funds.

Clare Phipps, who created an online fundraiser in memory of Stefania, an Italian rough sleeper who was addicted to drugs and well-known in the Forest Hill area, said she hoped any money left-over after the funeral would be donated to charities and organisations supporting homeless women in particular.

So far, nearly £8,000 has been raised towards a memorial held on Saturday, July 20 at Sydenham School, and the cost of repatriating her remains to Italy for burial, with support from Beckenham’s NS Wibberley Funeral Directors.

Ms Phipps told the News: “I am really keen to make sure the funds passed to us in her memory are spent as wisely as possible so I am getting together a

Ms Phipps told the paper a permanent memorial “isn’t currently within the scope” of their fundraising, but they would be keen to explore ideas including an artist-designed seat in Forest Hill station underpass.

JAILED FOR OAP ROBBERY

A MAN from Peckham has been jailed for six years after pleading guilty to robbing thousands of pounds worth of jewellery from an elderly man's home.

Peter Reed, aged 46, (b.23.01.73) from Bath Close, was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on Thursday, August 1.

The court heard how Reed, and an accomplice, forced entry into the OAP's home, also in Southwark, in the early hours of Sunday, May 26.

The Met said the men dragged the pensioner out of bed, restrained him by the arms and marched him downstairs.

They then demanded he hand over jewellery and cash and threatened him, until he broke free and ran into the garden, raising the alarm.

In total, the two men fled with jewellery worth more than £15,000 yet to be recovered.

Reed was arrested after officers interviewed the victim, who told them he remembered Reed and other man calling at his house the night before, asking to 'speak to a man named Michael'.

They left after being told there was no one with that name at the address.

Forensics also found a fingerprint, matching Reed's, on a clock in the house.

He was arrested on June 7, and later charged, but his accomplice is still at large, and officers are urging the public to help identify him and bring him to justice.

Detective Constable Jack Brackley said: “Whilst I am pleased that Peter Reed has been jailed for his role in this despicable crime, there is still an outstanding suspect that we need to trace along with the items stolen in the

“The man has been described as of light skinned Arab appearance, approximately 5ft 7inches tall, of slim build.

"He had dark hair with dark facial hair.

Arrest after report of a ‘stranger sexual assault’ in Walworth

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault after a reported attack in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Police said they were called to Cotham Street, near Walworth Road, at 12.26am on Tuesday, August 6, after reports of a sexual assault.

They found a woman in her 20s, who told them she was attacked by a stranger who had the fled the scene.

Officers tracked down a suspect who in the vicinity and arrested him on suspicion of sexual assault.

He is now being questioned in a south London police station.

The woman, who did not require hospital treatment, continues to be supported by specialist officers during the investigation.

AN ELDERLY man who was critically injured in a collision with a bus on Walworth Road last week has died, police confirmed this week.

Officers were called to the scene at Walworth Road at 4.16pm on Friday, August 1.

The 88-year-old was taken to hospital in a critical condition and died two days later on Sunday, August 4, at 11.57am.

Although he is yet to be formally identified, his next of kin have been informed.

Police from the serious collisions have launched an investigation and are appealing for any witnesses or those with dash cam footage to get in touch with the incident room on 0208 285 1574.

AN EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD from Peckham who first sat on a racehorse only months ago triumphed at Goodwood Racecourse to take home the Magnolia Cup.

Khadijah Mellah, who learned to ride at Loughborough Junction's Ebony Horse Club, won her debut race in front of 25,000 last Thursday afternoon as the UK's first Muslim woman jockey.

In the crowd were her teachers and friends from the riding school, who said

they were ‘at the finish but completely overcome with pride’.

Riding Haverland, trained by Charlie Fellows, she is believed to be the first ever to compete wearing a hijab.

Speaking before her epic ride, she said: “There are definitely a fair few guys out there who would struggle to do what I am doing and I am thrilled that I am part of shift in social understanding of what women can achieve and what they can be good at.

“There’s quite a stereotype around Muslim girls and them ‘not being able to follow their sporting passions and dreams’.

“I want to be a role model to anyone who wants to do something that they wouldn’t initially believe was in their comfort zone and allow people to follow their aspirations and dreams.”

Her story will be the subject of a documentary, Riding A Dream, produced by Oli Bell, due to be broadcast on ITV in the autumn.

Among the thousands of messages posted online by newfound fans, the young jockey was congratulated by the Duchess of Cornwall, Ebony Horse Club’s president.

HRH met Khadijah in person in July, at a Clarence House reception.

HE DEVASTATED mother of a nineteen-year-old artist who was found dead last week has told of her heartbreak at losing the son she worked so hard to lift from poverty and give a better life in London.

Forty-four-year-old nurse Grace Carlos discovered her only son, Aldrin Lloyd, had been found dead last Wednesday, nearly three weeks after he disappeared from the home they shared on Canada Water’s Plover Way. When he first vanished she never imagined he would have left of his own accord, or wanted to hurt himself.

“He had future plans, he wanted to learn how to drive and he recently told me his dream was to be a father,” she told the News.

Grace says she and Aldrin were very close, partly because they were making up for lost time.

In February 2002, when Aldrin was two years old, she left him in the care of her mother and siblings in Cabanatuan City in the Philippines, and came to London in search of work.

A trained nurse, who was 24 when

Aldrin was born and separated from his father, she made the heart-breaking decision to move to London without him so she could give her family money to eat.

“People from here can never imagine what the poverty there is really like,” she told the News. “I was the eldest of four children, and at ten-years-old I was looking after my siblings.

“I had to go to the market, clean the house and do the washing, and get my siblings ready for school.

“We would have just one meal to eat, to share between all of us. We were hungry.

“It is not the life that I wanted for my son. I said to him: ‘you will never get hand-me-down clothes’, because that’s all I had.

“I did not experience the ‘normal’ childhood. It was a childhood of poverty.

But this is not just my story, it is the story of many Filipinos.

“We live in a third world country and we have to leave our families to find work.

“There was no Whatsapp back then. I relied on a £20 calling card and visited for holidays. I used to call my mother just to hear him say ‘mama, mama, mama’ down the phone.”

during the holidays to save up enough money to help her family, pay for Aldrin’s education, food and clothes, and get a home in London he could one day live in.

Over the next eight years she saw Aldrin only a few times a year, when she was able to take afford flights to go to his school recognition days and graduation, and spend her time off work taking him on holiday.

The young Aldrin was already showing signs of talent. “As soon as he could hold a pencil he was interested in art,” she says. “Our house in the Philippines was full of his sketches, I had to keep sending money to keep repainting the walls.”

When Aldrin was twelve, mother and son were finally reunited when he permanently moved to the UK, gaining a place at Westminster City School, and slowly adjusted to his new life in Southwark.

“Both of us were really excited to be together after a long time,” says Grace, “I promised to him that I would show him the world.”

The young Aldrin loved basketball and collecting basketball shoes, and took up the sport as well as martial arts, and gradually settled into school making friends.

“He was sensitive, he liked quiet

places, and was so kind and thoughtful,” she says.

One former classmate has written to Grace, telling her how every single day Aldrin shared his packed lunch with him when he ‘didn’t have a pound to his name’.

But the death of his father from cancer, who had been living in the Philippines, and Grace’s own breast cancer diagnosis just two years after he joined her, left both of them reeling.

Seeing his mother overhaul her diet and lifestyle, he too decided to go vegan and ditch tea and coffee, while she underwent radiotherapy treatment. From then on he became more interested in Buddhism, martial arts, and meditation.

“I said to him, ‘because you are only

fourteen-years-old I have to fight this’.

And he said to me, ‘mama I am going to look after you’. He was my strength, my constant reassurance.”

Wanting to make the most of the time they had together, Grace began using her holidays and Aldrin’s time off school to go travelling to as many places as they could, visiting San Diego, Dubai, Japan and all over Europe.

Fortunately the treatment worked and she went into remission, believing they had many more adventures yet to come.

After gaining a bursary to study Fine Art at City and Guilds, it looked like Aldrin was on the way to fulfilling his dreams.

His tutor, Robin Mason, described him as “a wise, skilful, talented, creative

“They said he was low risk because he was a nineteen-year-old man, who did martial arts, and could look after himself, who was healthy and didn’t drink and was unlikely to harm himself, with no history of mental health problems.”

When he had been missing for a week, Grace asked the officers working the case to reassess.

Believing her pleas were being ignored, her neighbour began sharing an appeal on Facebook and Grace enlisted the help of friends and colleagues to place posters across London.

Every day since, she has been the victim of sickening hoax calls, including one claiming to know the whereabouts of her son – in exchange for £10,000.

Aldrin’s body was found on the morning of Wednesday, July 31 by a dog walker in Russia Dock Woodland.

Health centre could be named after Harold or Tessa?

A NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD has been charged with attempted murder following an incident on Bermondsey’s Empire Square East on Sunday morning.

Yusef Ali, of Brixton’s Corry Drive, appeared at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody to appear at Inner London Crown Court on Tuesday, September 3.

Police had been called to reports of a group of people fighting and found a woman reported to have injuries ‘sustained from a fall from height’ during the incident.

Police responded to the call at 10.12am on Sunday August 4 to Long Lane.

Police said they also found one male near the scene at the junction with Borough High Street beside Tesco Metro with a stab injury and another two men with stab wounds a short ditance away.

Police said that none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

VOTING IS now open to choose the new name of Dulwich’s new health centre from a shortlist of six.

COUNCIL WINS COSTS AND FINES FROM PROPERTY AGENT FOR Eco-warrior has ‘STRING OF FIRE SAFETY FAILINGS’ her own Waterloo someone who had never met Aldrin or Grace who set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for his funeral and support Grace.

An artist, who is half Filipino, was so moved by Grace’s appeal that he set up the page with fellow members of a dog walking group who regularly visit Russia Dock Woodland, where Aldrin’s body was found, indicative of the compassion from the local community, many of whom often saw Aldrin practising his martial arts moves in the park.

Grace says the kind words and stories about all the good Aldrin did in his short life are the only thing helping her to get through each day.

“Did I work too much and miss something important?

“What could I have done? I keep blaming myself and don’t know how I can go on.

“To know that my son was a good person, that he touched so many people’s lives, and was so kind, it is the only thing I have that can help me heal.

“I have been so touched by everyone’s kindness and generosity.”

A PROPERTY agent has been hit with heavy costs by Southwark Council for a string of fire safety breaches in his Bermondsey and Rotherhithe properties – while eight of his nine Houses in Multiple Occupation were ‘not properly licensed’.

Omar Patel was handed costs and fines of £18,117 for offences concerning seven properties on May 15 at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court.

Offences relating to another two of his properties landed Patel costs and fines of over £19,000 on July 29.

In total, Patel – whom the council said has ‘previously been convicted of offences in Newham’ – was hit with a bill of over £37,000.

Cllr Victoria Mills, Cabinet Member for Finance, Performance and Brexit, said: “The council takes fire safety extremely seriously and our council homes are fire risk assessed and maintained to the highest standard.

“We hold all landlords and property managers in Southwark accountable to the same high degree.

“I hope that this result ensures that all landlords make sure that their

properties are properly maintained and that all fire protection equipment is present and functioning.

“I would also encourage anyone who lives in an HMO to let us know if they suspect that fire protection isn’t up to scratch.”

Council inspectors said that despite tenants paying as much as £950 a month, several of Patel’s properties lacked fire, heat or smoke detectors, secure fire doors or protected escape routes.

Patel – director of management companies Let Share Ltd and Live Work Study London Ltd – was also fined for failing properly to ensure his properties were licensed as Houses of Multiple Occupancy (HMOs) as required under law.

A council spokeswoman said that without a licence, it can be difficult to tell if a property is fit for human habitation. Adding that the licences mean that councils will inspect properties and given landlords and agents a deadline to complete work.

The licences also limit the number of rooms and people a property can house, a limit which one of Patel’s properties breached, the council claimed.

Officials will now monitor the nine addresses to take further action if Patel fails to make them safe.

AN EXTINCTION Rebellion protester who says she pleaded guilty for a public order offence for blockading Waterloo Bridge in April has published the statement she read out to the court.

Anthea Lawson, a 44-year-old researcher and editor from Totnes, was among nine protesters appearing at City of London Magistrates’ on Friday, August 2 for sitting on the bridge and refusing to move.

“I have not done this lightly,” she said in a blog post entitled ‘A statement to the court by a first-time lawbreaker.’

“I have felt extremely uncomfortable throughout the process of protesting, arrest, custody and now standing here before you.”

“But what I did feels like the only thing left to try. I am talking here about the existential threat posed by climate change and species extinctions to life as we know it,” she added.

The sentence was a six month conditional discharge plus court costs, she said. April’s action saw hundreds of green protesters arrested by officers for blockading the bridge.

Extinction Rebellion calls for the government enact legally binding policies to go carbon neutral by 2025 and to establish a ‘Citizen’s Assembly’ to deal with the climate change emergency.

A RAFFLE and auction fundraising event to clear the legal bills of an ex-publican couple from Rotherhithe has raised over £1,000 – but more needs to be raised.

Mick and Linda Norris were turfed out of their home and business at the China Hall by the off-shore developer Hamna Wakaf Ltd in January this year, leaving them with a whopping £22,000 legal bill.

Simon Hughes, the former local Bermondsey MP who organised the evening at Bermondsey’s Old Bank pub on Friday said: “Thanks to Mos and the team at 'The Old Bank' and some very generous supporters we collected well over £1000 on Friday.

“We now need other generous friends, supporters and donors to help us raise the rest of the money to pay the rest of the legal bill. Nothing will go to the family themselves.”

The historic boozer on Lower Road, which Mick and Linda ran for over 35 years, has been standing empty since they were forced out.

Now more auction prizes are on offer to the local community in a bid to clear the couple’s legal bill.

Among them are a signed Millwall squad t-shirt and tickets for a show at the Southwark Playhouse.

GANG JAILED AFTER ‘SICKENING ROBBERY WHICH SAW KNIFE HELD TO BABY’S THROAT’

A WALWORTH man has been jailed for his role in a ‘truly sickening’ robbery, in which the court heard a craft knife was held to a ten-month-old baby’s throat.

Joshua Juggan, 24, of Alvey Street, was among four men who stormed a house in Coventry in the morning of June 18 last year – and is now behind bars after being intercepted by armed police on the M40.

Warwick Crown Court heard how the gang, involving Juggan and his cousin, Malik Ragnatt, of Croydon’s Bensham Lane, tied two women to chairs while searching the house alongside Daniel McKain, 29, and Gregory Crockett, 24.

When the robbers discovered a safe in a kitchen cupboard, one member held a craft knife to the baby’s throat in a bid to obtain the code, the court was told.

In an interview with police, Juggan admitted being involved in the robbery, but claimed to have stayed in the kitchen throughout – and said he was ‘shocked’ a baby had been threatened.

All four men had denied threatening the baby with a knife.

The gang tore the safe from the wall, before Juggan drove them to a field off a motorway slip-road, where they forced it open with a crowbar and divided the cash.

Police said Juggan and his 21-year-old cousin Ragnatt spent several hours in Birmingham smoking drugs before driving back to London.

But unknown to them, a quick-thinking

member of the public had noted down the registration plate on Juggan’s Ford Focus, and police in the West Midlands were already hunting for them.

Police stopped the car at gunpoint that evening, uncovering balaclavas, duct tape, around £1,400 in £20 notes and Juggan and Ragnatt’s phones.

Texts showed Juggan arranging to meet his cousin the night before the robbery, before collecting McKain, of Brixton’s Clarewood Walk, at 2am.

Further analysis showed contact with Crockett, of Friary Road in Birmingham’s Handsworth Wood, and revealed all four men were near the victim’s home in Coventry at the time of the robbery.

‘WONDERFUL APPLAUSE’ FOR STEVE AT DEN FROM HOME AND AWAY FANS

MILLWALL FANS honoured the emotional appeal of a teenager to pay tribute to her late dad by clapping on the 57th minute of Saturday’s game against Preston.

Maisie Murrell, aged fifteen, had appealed to Lions fans to clap on the 57th minute as her father, Steve, was only 57years-old when he passed away suddenly on July 20.

Her call, which was also shared by the News in a front page story, struck a chord with both home and away fans – and a

minute-long sound of applause rang out across The Den in Steve’s memory.

Steve’s niece and goddaughter, Louise Gaul, said the reception from fans at the game had been ‘just phenomenal’.

“Maisie was thrilled to bits, she was so happy with it,” said Louise. “We’re just so proud of her.

“My uncle was such a humble bloke, he never would have something like this happening for him.”

Relatives of the dad-of-three – to Maisie, Billy, 29, and Kerry, 25 – donned t-shirts in memory of Steve, some including doting nicknames he had, such as ‘Big Dog.’

For those without t-shirts in memory of the ‘old-fashioned south London lad’, Louise made remembrance ribbons.

“I have also been asked to make more for Steve's funeral, which will be lovely, so it's nice that people will be wearing them again,” she said.

A funeral for the electricals company worker, who grew up in Peckham and lived in Kennington, will be held later this month.

“A wonderful applause at The Den from the Millwall family and the Preston supporters, too,” said Millwall FC. “Rest in peace, Steve.”

“There was another young child in the address at the time but thankfully no-one was hurt and the offenders left with a quantity of cash and jewellery.”

At Warwick Crown Court on July 12, Juggan was jailed for ten years, McKain for eleven years and Crockett – who also admitted handling stolen goods – was given a twelve-year sentence.

Ragnatt was sentenced two days later and handed ten years behind bars.

DC Simpson added: “I’m pleased the court has handed down lengthy prison terms for what was a shocking robbery conspiracy.”

APPEAL TO TRACE ‘RESCUER OF RAPE VICTIM’

OFFICERS INVESTIGATING the rape of a woman in Borough are appealing for a possible witness to come forward, who it is said helped the victim escape her attacker.

The rape was reported to have happened in the early hours of Saturday, 20 July.

Police said the victim, in her 20s, was walking in the area of Great Dover Street at around 2:15am when she was grabbed around the neck from behind by an

unknown man, threatened, and taken to a nearby wooded track leading from Brockham Street to Dickens Fields.

Police say she was then raped a number of times. During the attack, the woman managed to break free and ran a short distance to Trinity Church Square. The suspect is said to have caught up with the victim, at which point a car stopped.

Police say the suspect exchanged some words with this driver, who then left.

Officers do not have a description of this car or driver. But they say almost immediately afterward, either the same car or a different car stopped and the

A 91-YEAR-OLD Bermondsey pensioner was left shocked last week when a car suddenly crashed into his front garden, completely demolishing his wall.

Bill Brenland, a resident of Southwark Park Road, had been making his way into his kitchen shortly before 4pm on Wednesday, July 31 when he heard a ‘tremendous bang’ – which he first thought was a bomb going off.

An initial bang is thought to have been the car colliding with another – which did not stop, he said – before the vehicle tore through his garden wall.

“I was on my way to the kitchen when I heard this tremendous bang. I thought a bomb had gone off!” said Bill, a lifelong Southwark resident.

“A car must have collided with that one, but the next bang was that car hitting the wall. From all the banging I thought he actually hit the door.”

The collision has totally destroyed Bill’s garden wall, and left chunks of brick strewn across the ramp he uses to get in and out of the house.

“It threw lumps of concrete up my

victim managed to escape to the safety of the vehicle, whereupon the suspect walked off.

The driver of this car, who is thought to have been a black male in his early 20s, and possibly driving a seven seater vehicle, then drove the victim to Walworth Police Station.

Detective Sergeant Jonny Norman from Central South’s Safeguarding team is leading the investigation.

He said: “We are very keen to trace the driver of the vehicle who drove the victim to Walworth police station. Did you drive a distressed women to Walworth Police

Station, in the small hours of Saturday, 20 July?

“We would like to speak to you to support our ongoing investigation. We would also like to speak to the first driver who originally stopped, although unfortunately we do not have a description of this person. We are treating both of these individuals as possible witnesses and we would like to highlight that you are not in trouble.”

Officers are also linking this incident to a separate sexual assault on another woman, aged in her 20s, reported to have happened a short time afterwards, at

around 3:50am in Borough High Street.

In this incident, police say the suspect grabbed hold of the woman, led her down a nearby street, but then left the scene she was physically unharmed.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation and has information about either incident, is urged to contact police via 101, or by tweeting @MetCC quoting CAD reference CAD 6111/02Aug19.

A 28-year-old man has been charged in connection with offences against both women, and will appear in court at a date in late August.

Police have also been informed of the other vehicle thought to have been involved in the incident, which Bill’s family and friends suspect did not stop at the scene.

AN AFRO hairdresser from Camberwell is in the running for an ‘Oscar of the hair world’ after reaching the finals of HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards.

Lathaniel Chambers (pictured left) , a hair stylist at Lathaniel’s Couture Hair & Beauty in Camberwell’s Coldharbour Lane, is shortlisted among five others from across the UK for the Afro Hairdresser of the Year

2019 accolade, after his work impressed more than 100 industry judges.

Upon finding out he was shortlisted, he said: “Afro hair is so versatile and allows for brilliantly sculptural designs. It’s big and bold and I was able to let my imagination run free.

I’m delighted to be recognised and to have got this far.”

The awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf, will take place on November 25, 2019, where the final winners will be announced.

We may soon have a protected two-way cycleway all the way from Tower Bridge to Greenwich.

Two years ago, TfL consulted on a scheme to install a protected cycleway along about two-thirds of the route. This got a fantastic 83% positive

Beneath the comedy exterior, Boris Johnson’s political decisions have had hugely serious consequences for Southwark, and now threaten even more serious consequences for our country.

This area is undergoing major redevelopment with large numbers of new homes being built. But thankfully, Southwark have now published their proposals for this final section and people were delighted to see that they are planning a two-way protected cycleway along the roads connecting the bits TfL are building.

of Planning, announced the council would oppose ALL protected cycleways, as he said that having cyclists on the roads meant they slowed traffic to safer speeds. This meant that children and pensioners were basically being regarded as human speed-bumps!

Outraged by the refusal to protect our kids, we set up a campaign, which was the predecessor for Stop Killing Cyclists. We set about doing direct actions at Council meetings and were delighted when Cllr Peter John, the leader of the council, announced a complete U-turn a few months later in an interview with Southwark News. Since then Southwark has slowly improved. And this announcement marks the completion of the policy turn-around. Well done Southwark.

However, we need to again win the debate during the public consultation period. It is crucial that the

car and blackcab lobby do not block this precious route for family and commuter cycling, as they have done in some other boroughs. Dual crossword More should have been done by police to help find Aldrin Carlos earlier and support his desperate mother

EVENTEEN DAYS after first leaving his Rotherhithe home with just a set of keys, nineteen-year-old Aldrin Carlos’ lifeless body was found less than a mile away in woodlands in Rotherhithe.

His distraught mother, with the help of friends, family and colleagues – including Aldrin’s university classmates – spent hundreds printing enough posters all over London in the hope any information would be found.

Although the Rotherhithe community rallied and helped search far and wide, their best efforts could never match the thoroughness of a police search.

Surely leaving home without his phone, wallet, or means of travel was a warning sign this was no usual case of a ‘teenage runaway’?

Tragically it seems that finding him sooner would not have saved Aldrin. But it would have avoided prolonging the agony of not knowing his fate for his mother. And it would have meant she could identify his body and say goodbye, and plan his funeral sooner.

For Aldrin, it would have given him the dignity in death that he brought to his life and works of art.

Such a tragic end for such a sensitive, compassionate, and kind young man who went out of his way to help others, is truly heart-breaking - as it is for a mother who did so much to improve his life.

Although we don’t know the exact circumstances of how he died, we do know that in taking so long to be found, it appears Aldrin and his mother were let down by our police service.

Just because a crime hasn’t been committed, it doesn’t mean the police can plead lack of resources and time as they push cases like this to the back of their list.

This newspaper has always championed officers doing a tough, often thankless task, and highlighted the strain they are put under by senseless cuts.

But in this case, whatever the problems with time, money and resources – they got it terribly, terribly wrong.

No i-deer

OVER THE past week social media has been awash with rumours of a deer popping up in the north of the borough.

First the creature was supposedly spotted running near Canada Water library on Saturday, and then through to Russia Dock Woodlands.

The elusive sightings did not stop there: this week the News has been made aware of more possible spots of the Muntjac deer, this time supposedly in Southwark Park.

Mysteriously however, no-one appears to have a picture of these sightings. If anyone has managed to grab a snap of the deer, feel free to contact us.

Labour’s dirty war

CHRIS WILLIAMSON, the Labour MP suspended for suggesting the party was ‘too apologetic’ on antisemitism, has angered Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle by saying ‘solidarity would be very much appreciated’.

“Getting in the sea would be very much appreciated,” replied Coyle. He clarified that anyway, “I think he’d float.”

Williamson hit back saying it was ironic that Coyle would refer to a ‘witch-hunt’, claiming the MP was bitter his CLP had invited him to speak about open selections last year.

“Democracy is a wonderful thing,” he said.

But Gemma Doyle, chair of the CLP, bluntly responded to Williamson: “We did not invite you to speak.”

And, added Coyle, “I wasn’t suggesting for a second that you were a woman able to swim in the 1600s. For the avoidance of doubt, I just meant that you were a sh**.”

Mouse-trap

TOURISTS NEAR St George’s Cathedral in SE1 are being ensnared with a crafty prank set up by a local whose flat overlooks the church.

Ian Shaw, whose living room balcony overlooks a phone box fixed to the north end of the church, has shared details of how he uses the old-school red-box to play a joke on unsuspecting tourists.

Those trying to get a holiday snap next to the iconic red phone box may now find themselves having to rescue a mouse trapped inside the Cathedral.

“I’m afraid I’ve now taken to waiting for someone to turn up for the obligatory phone box pic,” explained Ian. “And I call and say I’m the cathedral mouse, I’m getting on a bit now - mouse stuff is always a grey area and could they please please come and get me - because Lucifer the cathedral cat is back.”

“I’m longing for a school party with tetchy teachers,” he says, adding: “It’s dark days sometimes, you understand. And you just have to make the most of things.”

GUY’S AND St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has launched the world’s first clinic for a little-known genetic disease that affects tens of thousands of men.

The service at Guy’s Hospital supports patients with Klinefelter syndrome, a common chromosomal condition where men are born with an extra X chromosome.

The condition can cause male infertility and increases risk of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers.

Klinefelter syndrome is treated with testosterone replacement therapy but patients need access to a range of medical specialties, including fertility experts, geneticists, endocrinologists and psychological support.

The new clinic brings all these medical specialities together in one setting. This reduces the number of visits a patient will have to make, from an average of six appointments to just one, and reduces waiting times by around 12 months.

Dr Tet Yap, consultant urologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “We are absolutely delighted to launch the world’s first clinic for men living with Klinefelter syndrome.

“Our new service will help to raise the profile of what is still a relatively unknown condition and will also mean that our patients will have access to a multidisciplinary team of experts in one setting and receive treatments quicker.”

I was diagnosed at the age of two months. My haemoglobin, which is what carries oxygen in your blood, was so low at one point, but I was lucky to get specialist treatment.”

He continues: “I have been to

the head, eye, ear, bone etc doctors, stayed in most wards and had most scans and blood tests. Everyone in the hospital has been very nice to me. They always cheer me up and make me forget that I am in hospital with an illness. Sometimes I even have to come into the hospital on Christmas Eve and last year, I got to meet Rita Ora and Idris Elba!

They were really nice and Rita Ora had the prettiest smile.”

He also describes how Evelina London has inspired him: “It’s because of Evelina London that I dream of being a doctor. I adore the hospital and most likely would love to work here. I am good with children.”

Tree controversy leads to grief and joy at Young Vic

FROM MY first steps into the auditorium I realised quickly that this wasn’t going to be your usual night at the theatre. There would be no taking my seat, flicking through the programme or deciding which flavour ice cream to have during the interval.

Instead as I entered I was greeted with a crowded stage of dancing bodies – including those of artistic director Kwame Kwei-Armah and male lead Alfred Enoch – that was made up of actors, dancers and audience members alike, writes Rosie O’Connell...

Though it is worth noting the plagiarism scandal that the show has been engulfed in, I feel this cannot be used as a means to review a complete

performance. Billed as co-creators, Kwame Kwei-Armah and Idris Elba have refuted Tori Allen-Martin and Sarah Henley’s authorship allegations and while both are thanked in Elba’s programme note, neither received a credit for the final production.

Tree tells the story of young mixedrace Londoner Kaelo (Alfred Enoch) born to South African parents during the apartheid. After the recent death of his mother, Kaelo makes the journey to scatter her ashes in South Africa where his stern Afrikaans Grandmother, Elzebe (Sinead Cusack) wants nothing more than to keep her land in the family. Kaelo has a lot to learn about the racial tensions, politics and history that

The plot may be a little on the thin side, but the piece represents much more than one person’s story - the entire evening, in fact, feels collaborative.

In its modest 90 minute runtime, Tree manages to convey the joy and grief, not only of individual characters but of a nation, articulately navigating issues of personal identity and privilege. This show starts with a party and ends with a party that brings an irresistible, electric energy that is also bold enough to open a serious discussion within itself.

Tree is on at the Young Vic lives on with her partner, and volunteering in women's domestic abuse services across London, facilitating drama workshops with service users.’ This is part of her mission to make the arts accessible to everyone.

Bernhardt is a community of actors, musicians, and other performers which has been running for six years. ‘We meet once a month at Arch 468 in Loughborough Junction to share material we're working on,’ says Terenia, adding, ‘The showcase events are always so special, it's such a warm and accommodating environment where artists can completely bare their soul if they want to… I'll never forget one night we hosted a few years ago when a poet got on stage and came out to her friends - the room completely erupted in applause, it was so inspiring.’

ON ENTERING the auditorium to see My Son Pinocchio Jnr we heard children chatting in the camp they’d made out of a sheet, writes Michael Holland...

There was a ‘Woooohhooooo!’ As the Blue Fairy appeared singing When You Wish Upon A Star and I was transported right back to every one of my childhood Disney dreams.

In a mix of old songs and new, toymaker Geppetto and his puppet take on modern day issues as they learn about parenting, family and discovering that there is no such thing as the perfect child or the perfect parent.

This production by The British Theatre Academy opened my eyes to the joy of young actors enjoying their work. I was very impressed with the confidence each cast member had, and I soon forget these were young people and not seasoned professionals. I was somewhat dazzled by Felix Hepburn’s Stromboli - the spivvy Svengali out to earn a few quid off the puppet who needs no strings; and Ryan Trevatt who oozed cheeky charm in a role he obviously relished. The story gets a little convoluted in the middle but the energy coming off the stage eased any discombobulation created.

The music and lyrics to the new songs are written by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked).

Evidently excited, Terenia gushes, ‘I believe that if we focus on empowering all women and building up their self worth and confidence then we could make a real difference.’ I believe her.

The Camberwell emblem that isn’t from SE5 at all…

YOU COULD be forgiven for thinking the Camberwell Beauty, a species of Butterfly named after the corner of south London where it was first recorded in the UK, was endemic to Southwark.

But, in truth, its name is rather misleading, and the Camberwell Beauty doesn’t actually hail from SE5 at all.

It is named after the area thanks to Moses Harris who, in 1748, first spotted the dark, winged insect on what is now Coldharbour Lane.

An alternative suggestion - the Grand Surprize - was mooted, but it was ‘Camberwell Beauty’ that captured the imagination.

The species - whose scientific name is Nymphalis Antiopa - is found in continental Europe, Asia and North America, but has been recorded in small numbers in East Anglia and the South East, individuals who have found their way mysteriously to the British Isles by accident.

Sightings in the UK are few and far

between, and none have been recorded in London since Harris’ great find – although a flurry appeared across the country in 2006.

Abroad, the species’ name usually describes its dark, yellow-fringed wings, such as ‘Mourning Cloak’ – used in the USA.

But its scarcity hasn’t prevented the creature from becoming something of a mascot for the area, including in Butterfly Walk shopping centre, the park gates on Camberwell Green, and a mural on Wells Way. The tiled mural originally belonged to Samuel Jones & Co, a print

manufacturer bombed during the war.

It was saved and relocated to the site of the former library and baths near Burgess Park, now used as the base of the famous boxing club Lynn AC. And, this week, a new mural showing the lovely creature in flight

has been pained by south London artist Lionel Stanhope in a railway arch on Camberwell New Road, joining a new ‘Camberwell’ sign created last month.

Although you may not come across a real-life Camberwell Beauty, south London is one of the best places to see butterflies, with the Horniman Museum’s butterfly house hosting hundreds of butterflies within its indoor tropic garden, all year round.

Being the only person to have ever recorded a Camberwell Beauty in London is not the only of Harris’ achievements.

Born in 1730 in Holborn, the entomologist and engraver was a skilled illustrator whose pictures of species he discovered and identified were used by scientists.

One of his greatest accomplishments was the creation of his ‘colour wheel’, familiar to many from their time at primary school.

In Natural System of Colours, using the work of Isaac Newton, Harris identified how artists’ can create further colours by mixing the primaries of red, yellow and blue.

Consultation on proposed Flood Alleviation and Environmental Improvement Works on Peckham Rye Common Southwark Council wants to carry out works to tackle flood risk and improve the environment in Peckham Rye Common.

The Council has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) for consent under section 38 of the Commons Act 2006 to carry out the works. The Planning Inspectorate will decide the application on behalf of the Secretary of State.

There are three main elements to the project. Firstly, the scheme proposes to use landscaping including mounds to hold rain water in the Common during big storms in order to prevent possible flooding of properties below the Common. We anticipate this will protect more than hundred (100) properties from flooding.

Secondly, the strip of derelict land on East Dulwich road – commonly known as the “Donkey Ride” will be re-developed under the council's cleaner, greener and safer initiative. Finally, the area just north of East Dulwich Road known as the 'Northern Triangle' will be improved with new planting to enhance accessibility and connection with the rest of the Common. Of these, only the mound is subject to consent under section 38.

The slope of mound is negligible at the edges and increases to 1:3 where the common is lowest in the middle area and will therefore have some, albeit minimal impact on the common access. However, this will be mitigated by providing a DDA compliant access around the mound, with a slope of 1:25. Moreover, a slope of 1:3 at the steepest section is still considered gentle and therefore the impact on visibility will also be minimal. Proposed works in the 'Northern Triangle' and 'Donkey Ride' will have a positive environmental impact on the common and its users.

The proposed works are approximately 6000m2 in total, with about 600m of temporary fencing surrounding the site during the construction phase to keep common users safe. The rest of Peckham Rye Common and the Park will be accessible during this time. The site area can be seen in the attached map.

Lewis White can get back into the Football League

DULWICH HAMLET boss Gavin Rose has compared new signing Lewis White to former star Reise Allassani.

Hamlet signed White, who was released by Millwall this summer, on a free transfer after he impressed on trial.

Former Crystal Palace attacker Allassani played a key role in Hamlet’s 2017-18 promotion season. The 23year-old left for Coventry City that summer and has had loan spells since with Ebbsfleet and Woking.

Lewisham-born White, 20, had been training with Hamlet and will add further attacking depth as Rose targets the play-offs this season in National

League South.

Rose had tracked White for some time and is pleased with his new acquisition.

“He’s someone that we really like and rate,” Rose said. “I watched him three or four times last season, I wasn’t able to get him on loan but he’s someone that fits our style of play.”

White came off the bench in Dulwich’s first game of the season on Saturday away to Tonbridge Angels. The game finished 2-1 to the Hamlet, with goals from David Ijaha and Jeffrey Monakana.

“I think as he got to the senior part of the club, the style of play at Millwall probably doesn’t suit his attributes and he probably got lost a little bit in the last part of his development. He’s definitely someone who I believe can kick on back into League football and give himself a good career.”

And Hamlet made it six points from the opening two games of the season with a 1-0 win at home to Wealdstone on Tuesday evening.

NEW MILLWALL Lionesses boss Colin Reid said he will “relish” his new role as the club officially confirmed his appointment this week.

Reid has experience in men’s academies at Tottenham, West Ham, Charlton and Leyton Orient, developing players such as Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Mark Noble.

Millwall Lionesses will play in the Eastern Region Women’s Football League Division One for the 2019-20 season.

Reid spent last season as Technical Director of the successful Millwall RTC scheme and will continue in that role alongside his managerial duties for the Lionesses.

DULWICH KEPT their promotion hopes alive in Division 2 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship with a five-wicket victory over Dorking over Dorking last weekend.

Dulwich came to Dorking lacking five members of last week’s side and with three players making their first team debuts. The first of these, Sahir Hussain, was soon in action, opening the bowling in company with acting skipper Jon Lodwick. Lodwick once again bowled superbly, conceding just one scoring shot in his first five overs.

Hussain gave him good support, and got the vital breakthrough in his fourth over by having prolific opener Bradley Erasmus caught behind by the second newcomer Lachlan Skinner. Erasmus, who had made 83 in the first match between the sides, had been tied down to such an extent that he had scored just four runs off 24 balls.

With their talisman gone the Dorking batsmen were under sustained pressure, but had advanced the score to 28 in the 14th over when a remarkable running one handed catch above his head by Lodwick gave Hussain his second wicket, and his third followed to another good catch by Robbie Catling four balls later. Elliot Miles chipped in with a wicket in his first over and Hussain got his fourth in the following over to leave Dorking reeling on 39-5.

Charlie Kenway and skipper Toby Blood had lifted the score to 60 when Blood slammed a ball from Miles hard into Sam Ellison’s midriff at silly point and was amazed to see him hold onto the catch. Two more wickets for Miles and one for fellow slow left-armer Alex Gledhill reduced Dorking to 65-9 after 25 overs.

“Women’s football continues to grow and be on the up, and to manage and lead one of the most established teams in the women’s game is an opportunity that I will relish.”

Millwall Community Trust CEO Sean Daly said: “To have the Lionesses come back under the club officially is something we have worked hard towards and I’m delighted that it’s now happened.

“To have such an integral and historic women’s club involved with the Community Trust will not only see us thrive and continue to grow, but also

pair batted with confidence against the spinners, putting together the highest partnership of the innings.

Hussain was recalled to try and break the stand, but it was Miles who got the final wicket when Edwards ran down the pitch and was stumped.

The last wicket pair had added 40 in 14 overs to take the score to 105.

Miles finished with 5-28 off 11.2 overs, Hussain 4-31 off 12, and Gledhill 1-22 off 7.

With both their regular openers unavailable this week, Dulwich promoted the third newcomer, 14 year old Veer Patel, to open the batting with Ed Towner. And the youngster was not overawed by the experience as he made the early running, putting away anything loose to make 22 of the first 24 runs.

But Towner’s dismissal, lbw to Kieron Corbett, was followed three balls later by that of Ellison to make it 28-2 after nine overs. Matt Marfani joined Patel, and together they added 30 in six overs for the third wicket.

Erasmus joined the attack and had Marfani caught behind after making 22 off just 18 balls.

Patel and Miles then took the score to 81 when Patel was caught by Erasmus off Corbett for 40, after facing 64 balls with a maturity that belied his youth. Miles was bowled

by Erasmus two runs later to bring together Skinner and Catling. The pair batted circumspectly until Blood brought himself on and Skinner, who had faced 23 balls without scoring, smashed the first five balls of his second over for ten runs to win the match.

Corbett and Erasmus had done the bulk of the bowling to finish with 326 and 2-19 respectively, but none of the other bowlers had posed any real threat.

Dulwich climb one place to fourth, and are now only eight points short of second place. This weekend the competition reverts to fifty overs a side, when Dulwich visit Sanderstead who are currently marooned at the foot of the table.

New stadium key to Hamlet progression

The club was evicted from its ground in early 2018 and fought an arduous battle to return home by Boxing Day last year.

However, its current ground is not fit for purpose and so the club entered negotiations in early 2019 to move into a new stadium adjacent to the current ground on the same site.

An initial application was submitted in February 2019, but no final determination was made by Southwark council. The club hopes this new application will be determined by August 22. Under the new plans, work on a new astroturf pitch will begin in October, with construction of the stadium taking place over the next season-and-a-half.

So why is this application so important?

A club statement said that staying in the current stadium was not an option in the long-term. Currently, Dulwich is only maintaining its existence because Champion Hill’s landlords, Meadow Residential, allow DHFC to occupy the stadium on a rent-free basis and to cover its maintenance costs through revenue from the bar and catering facilities.

As a fan-owned club DHFC could not afford the estimated costs of longer-term renovation (over £2 million) or the estimated costs of a replacement stadium elsewhere that is compliant with the demands of the modern game (over £10 million).

Contributors to a local forum have suggested that the club have bowed to the whim of their landlords. However, Clasper said, “even if Meadow walked away and gifted us the whole thing, just to do the renovations like sticking plaster that we’re doing at the moment – we’re looking at around £2.2 million. That is obviously money that the club doesn’t have.”

In addition, the limited capacity and facilities of the current ground would not allow Dulwich to play in the National League should they achieve promotion.

Only a new stadium at Champion Hill will allow DHFC to maintain its playing squad and coaching staff, continue to progress up the football pyramid, facilitate its 3,000-plus crowds and continue its work with groups on a longterm basis.

In that case, why can’t Dulwich play elsewhere temporarily while a new stadium is built on the existing site?

Clasper made it clear that relocating would be impossible. There are no other stadiums with 500 covered seats in Southwark – a minimum requirement for National League football. Moving out of the Borough would cause a 90 per cent drop in revenues, as experienced by the club when they migrated to Tooting last season.

Even a temporary relocation for two seasons would create a debt in excess of £1 million unless the club was to cut the coaching and playing budget and start again in the lower leagues. Therefore, it is essential that the team continues to play at the current ground while construction of the new stadium is completed – and that is what this application allows for.

So why will the Council agree to this application where others failed?

Clasper said: “Positive engagement is the key. I can tell you categorically that I’ve been in all of those meetings, I’ve listened to the feedback and I’ve seen that feedback incorporated entirely into the next submission.

“We’ve also tried to talk to every local group, schools etc., to ensure that the application is sensitive to all of their interests. So, it doesn’t feel like it’s parties combating each other anymore, but parties collaborating to take everyone’s thoughts into consideration.“ One of the major contentions that has plagued Dulwich’s proposals for a new ground in the past has been opposition to building on Metropolitan Open Land (MOL). However, the club insist, “no section of the stadium building will be on MOL, all buildings will be on the existing Champion Hill site. The pitch though will be on our existing astroturf pitch which is on MOL and will be enclosed which it is not today.”

But the statement adds, “the renovation and the enclosure of that pitch was already part of the Southwark Plan for Green Dale Fields before this application was submitted and is therefore due to be actioned regardless of whether there is a stadium adjoining the site.”

While it seems the club is seeing eyeto-eye with both Meadow and the council, the same cannot be said for the relationship between the latter two. In April 2018 Southwark council leader, Peter John, tweeted “Is this (Meadow) the most stupid development company in history or simply the nastiest?”

The council were forced to launch an investigation into John’s conduct that cost them over £13,000.

Speaking to this paper in June 2019,

John described the fee as a “shocking waste of public funds to satisfy the thin skin of an American developer”.

However, Clasper was keen to distance the club from the spat. He said: “I think you’ve got to separate these two things.

The Peter John issue was nothing to do with the planning application. Peter’s not on the planning committee and doesn’t attend any of the planning meetings.

“It was a throwback to something that had commenced a year or two ago, whereas what we’re doing is starting afresh…working collaboratively. We can’t stop individuals making comments and I’m sure we’re going to get more as

which adds space for another 300 people – a big difference from only 20 metres [roughly] of steps four tiers high. So, you can imagine what is achievable with six tiers 200 metres in length – it shows you don’t need to build big stands.”

In addition, the new pitch will be lowered to allow for more terracing and better sightlines.

With regard to crowd cover, Clasper said: “It’s not being asked for on day one because we wanted to consult more with the local community groups. One of the main concerns [of those opposing the new stadium] is that people don’t want a football ground with four stands that dominate the whole area - and I’d agree with that.”

Clasper indicated that canvas covering to be rolled out only on match-days is a possibility being explored, but insisted that crowd cover was “a decision that the community should take”.

The club has encouraged the local community to review the application online and submit their opinions to the council. A press release read: “We have no wish to tell people what to say but we do want to encourage you to have your say. Feedback from the community and communicating to the council the position the football club has in our community will be a significant factor in any decision.

“If you want to help preserve the future of DHFC in our community please make sure you show your support by August 22, 2019. It is important the volume of comments reflects the level of support for the club in the community.”

signings. That’s not the case at Millwall this summer, after eight players were recruited, but it’s certainly true that some players have injected that enthusiasm, skill and ability that comes through fresh additions.

A year ago Ben Thompson was out of the frame. He knew he was unlikely to be involved in many games and after going to Portsmouth on loan in August he admitted he felt a little dejected that he was, temporarily, moved on from the club he holds so dear to his heart. It has proved an inspired move with Kenny Jackett developing his all-round game at Pompey, playing him in different roles, and it’s also to the midfielder’s credit that he grasped his opportunity despite his initial disappointment.

A year later he is a player transformed, that potential tapped and exploding like a volcano. Towards the end of last season he contributed vital goals in the relegation battle before injury ended his campaign. Last Saturday, yes, he felt like a new signing. Confidence flows from him, illustrated by a drop of the shoulder in midfield in the 33rd minute to

brilliantly take out Alan Browne.

Mahoney then shimmied into a shard of space to cross for Wallace.

If there were fears that Millwall might be too reliant on direct balls to 6ft 5ins Matt Smith, that little cameo of skillcross-finish should allay some of them.

In the second half Smith even showed his ability on the ball with a lovely little nutmeg with the outside of his left boot as Millwall counter-attacked.

There was so much promise but this was only the first game and a look at the rest of August’s fixtures should be enough for reserved judgement. West Brom, impressive 2-1 opening-day winners at Nottingham Forest, could provide an early reality check under former West Ham boss Slaven Bilic.

But the Lions will go The Hawthorns with real confidence. The squad looks far more competitive and Harris said last weekend that his approach to team selection will be slightly different. You might have performed well in the last game but that’s no guarantee of selection in the next.

Actually, scratch that, in this new era of Millwall, it was Huski Chocolate on the opening day. The sun was shining brightly at The Den last Saturday and the red-and-white branded bottles of the club’s new principal sponsorship partner were everywhere.

Under the Kitchener Stand three young boys improvised a game of football with a bottle that had been drained of its chocolatey goodness.

The only complaint was that there might be a need for a few more bins around the stadium in which empty bottles can be disposed.

We haven’t heard if there are going to be free chocolate drinks available from the Swedish company before every home game. But they made a good first impression and that was followed by an excellent first impression made by Neil Harris’ refreshed first team.

Although only three new signings started – and a fourth, Bartosz Bialkowski, came on for the unfortunate Frank Fielding, injured on his debut without even getting to halftime – there is a renewed vibrancy in the team.

New recruits have pushed established players. Harris pointedly referred last week to the likes of Connor Mahoney, as well as Shane Ferguson and Jiri Skalak, ensuring Jed Wallace would realise he had to improve his end product. So how appropriate it was then that Wallace fired in the only goal of the game with a sweet left-footed volley from Mahoney’s cross.

You’d imagine those words are designed for the ears of the likes of Skalak, Ferguson and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, and to ensure a competitive week in training.

Harris said standards must now be set and maintained at the training ground, a reference again to last season when several players let him down. We may never know exactly what went on but those in the current squad now know exactly what’s expected.

Leading them is Alex Pearce, whose post-match, closed-fist-thumping-intochest celebrations are becoming iconic.

Crucially for Millwall, too, the transfer window closes Thursday (August 8).

This time last year, after the opening-day 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough, the rattled north-east opponents bid for Wallace and George Saville, and ended up getting the latter, throwing Harris’ plans into disarray and unsettling his squad.

He now has the group he wants, and they look like a group that can take Millwall far this season.

Striker happy to be throwback who suits Lions’ style

IT WAS a question that could have been taken as an insult, but Matt Smith didn’t flinch.

Does he feel, he was asked after Saturday’s 1-0 win over Preston, like a “dinosaur”, in an age of false 9s, forwards playing anywhere across a front three who can press as effectively as midfielders, and fewer and fewer of the old No. 9s like Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand.

“To a degree, with the influx of foreign managers playing a certain way, I think the old school little-and-large combo is a dying philosophy,” Smith responded.

“It's not to say it's not an effective one.

You only have to look at [Saturday] to see that it can be effective, but certainly in modern-day football managers that operate in that way are getting less and less, I think, personally.

“How many strikers in the top five or six divisions are around 6ft5ins? There is not that many. You have the modernday Harry Kanes, that’s just the way I view it.”

Smith acknowledged strikers in his mould can be loved or hated, but dismissed the notion he had something

to prove at this level at the age of 30.

Again, a question that could have been taken the wrong way but was met with a considered response.

“I don't think I have a point to prove,” he continued, “I think if my performances weren't up to scratch then I would have been out of the Championship long before this seventh season.

“I think I’ve got to get a consistent run of games. QPR certainly didn't suit the way I played after the exit of Ian Holloway and I found my chances very limited. Under Olly [Holloway] I had a

good amount of football.

“I was lucky to back in the team in February by default, really, and managed to get seven goals from February until the end of the season, which managed to salvage something from what was a difficult period.

“On the flip side, a target man like me, you can be a bit love/hate, they are a dying breed in modern-day football. You get managers that love me and equally you get managers that are open, like at QPR, that I wasn't their cup of tea. It’s nothing personal, it’s just the type of player that I am.

“Modern-day strikers, you tend to only play with one and that one has to have a bit of both. I know what my limitations are and what my strengths are, and I have come into an environment that they know my strengths and as a player that's all you want.

“To have that belief from the manager, and not just the manager, the players as well, I have sensed that from day one, really.”

Millwall fans may not view Holloway fondly after his spell at the club, when they were hurtling towards League One by the end of his time in charge, but Smith sees similarities between him and Harris.

“They both wear their heart on their sleeve, they both are very passionate about their club,” Smith observed. “Ian Holloway was a very passionate man about QPR and likewise the gaffer here is passionate about a club he did so well at and has earned legendary status at.

“But both are a delight to work for and even in the first six or seven weeks here it has been an enjoyable transitional period.”

Several players have said how impressed they were on meeting him how thorough Harris’ knowledge of them was and his vision for how he saw

them contributing to the side.

Smith was left with the same impression.

“When we first met, he delivered a presentation and explained to me how he saw me fitting into his team and how he wanted to play to my strengths,” Smith explained. “His enthusiasm to bring me to the club and desire to want me to do well here was probably what sold it to me.

“He did his homework on me and I did my homework on him and everything that everyone said about him is true: He is a gentleman first and foremost, but he is a proper good football man and that's been really evident in the first seven weeks I have been here. That has been really enjoyable.”

One last question, concerning personal targets for the season, and a question of his own to finish.

“It would be foolish of me to say any of those out loud, I think any striker would say that is the kiss of death to do something like that.

“Season on season is about improving.

You always look at your best goals return and you want to try and top that. If the aim of the game is not about having the best season that you have ever had, then why are you here?”

BARTOSZ BIALKOWSKI might just have the most interesting backstory of any player in the Millwall squad.

It involves a contract offer from Inter Milan when he was still a teenager, rogue agents, trials at Wigan and Glasgow Rangers, and a cruciate ligament injury soon after his Championship debut that would affect a transfer thirteen years later.

And plenty more.

Bialkowski was born in Braniewo, a town in northern Poland, and because, he says, he was “big and chubby” and didn’t like running around a lot he ended up playing in goal.

From that modest start, by the age of fifteen he was one of the most talented young goalkeepers in Poland with interest in him from professional clubs.

He joined Górnik Zabrze in Ekstraklasa, the first division in Poland, and made his debut as a seventeen-year-old in October 2004 after Piotr Lech had been sent off in a league game against Dyskobolia Grodzisk.

So far so good.

That’s when a young professional footballer’s dreams collided with the murky reality of agents who sense an opportunity to cash in with little care for the welfare of their clients.

Bialkowski takes up the story, a long and winding one from Poland to England, back home again waiting for the phone to ring, to Scotland, Nottingham and Ipswich through false dawns and starts.

“It was always my dream to be a footballer,” Bialkowski told the News this week in his first paper interview since joining the club. “Maybe not as a goalkeeper but I was always quite chubby when I was young and I didn’t like to run, so I thought I’m just going to chill in goal and stand still. I was always big so I covered most of the goal!

“But when I was fourteen or fifteen I started training with a professional goalie coach. I actually liked the goalkeeping training sessions, we trained really hard.

During the week now I think we even train harder than the outfield players, even if we don’t run as much.

“When I was young I was very highly rated in Poland. There were loads of clubs asking for me, Polish and international clubs. I had a contract offer from Inter Milan on the table but I trusted the wrong guys as agents.

“I signed an agency contract. They promised me Manchester United and Arsenal, at the same time I had contract offers from Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan. They said to me, ‘don’t sign anything because we’ve got top, top English clubs lined up for you’.

“To play in England had always been my dream. I always supported the English national team, I always wanted to play here. So I trusted them and that was the wrong decision.

“My contract ran out in the summer [of 2005] with Górnik Zabrze. Then I was waiting at home for a phone call for two months. It was July or so and I was still waiting and finally the phone rang. The agent said, ‘at the moment we’ve got a trial with Wigan Athletic’. So I went there and it didn’t work out.

“I met Gary Walsh there, a goalkeeping coach who is at West Brom now, we still keep in touch with each other. He said, ‘we want to sign you but there’s a problem with your agents so we’re not going to sign you’.

“Then I went to Glasgow Rangers, on trial again, and it was exactly the same thing, they wanted to sign me but there

Contract offers from European giants, broken promises, a serious injury as he made his way in England as a teenager – keeper’s bumpy career road and a hug on his arrival at Millwall

was a problem with my agents.

“So I was back home in Poland again without a club. Bear in mind, a few months previously I had a contract offer with Inter Milan. It was a five-year contract.

“I ended up sitting at home and after another couple of months they called me and said they had a youth team in Sturm Graz in Austria. I said, ‘Jesus Christ, I made my debut at seventeen for a top Polish side.’ And then I’m being offered a youth team in Austria. With all due respect I was aiming higher than Sturm Graz at the time.

“I told them we needed to do something about it, we needed to cancel the contract.

We did that and I’ve gone back to my old Polish agent. He said to me, ‘listen, you haven’t trained in four months, let’s just take it slowly’. He managed to get me training time with Hearts for two months.

“I went there and trained and cleared my head. I met George Burley and Malcom Webster, the goalie coach. But after a week they got sacked and they said to me, ‘don’t sign anything at Hearts because we’re going to have a good club in England. As soon as we sign we’re going to sign you as well.’ That happened, they signed for Southampton and that’s how I ended up there.”

If he thought he had finally cracked it, earning a deal at a big Championship club

with ambitions for a return to the Premier League, fate intervened again to swing the story in another direction. In an FA Cup fifth-round game at Newcastle in February 2006, Bialkowski, still only eighteen, landed awkwardly and ruptured his ACL. It would be over a year before he played another senior competitive game and in the meantime Southampton had signed Kelvin Davis, who would go on to make over 300 appearances for the club.

Despite the injury, Liverpool wanted to sign him but the approach was rejected by the Saints.

Bialkowski continued: “They told me I was the future of the club, but they

needed a goalkeeper and signed Kelvin Davis, who went on to become a legend at the club. It was always tough for me to get into the team because he was playing so well. I still played 40-odd games for them but that was in six years, so it was not a lot.”

He went on loan to Ipswich in 2009 but was sent off in a reserve game and didn’t play for the senior side before an emergency loan spell at Barnsley, where he played twice.

Southampton were promoted to the Premier League in 2011-12, but Bialkowski had made just one league appearance that season. Ironically his final Saints appearance was a 3-2 home

defeat to Millwall in the FA Cup. He left Southampton in the summer of 2012 to drop into League One with Notts County.

“I said to myself this was probably my last chance to achieve something in England,” Bialkowski admitted. “I needed to go down a division to play week-in, week-out.

“I didn’t look at [money]. I still had a really good contract in League One, but I needed to go and play.”

He was 25 but after so much early promise had made just 28 league starts in his career.

Bialkowski added 40 more league starts the following season and 45 the

one after that. Despite County being on a downward spiral – they finished 20th in 2013-14 and were relegated the season after – Bialkowski had caught Mick McCarthy’s eye and the goalkeeper was back in the Championship.

He didn’t make his league debut for the Tractor Boys until November, but then kept his place as Ipswich finished sixth but lost to Norwich in the play-off semifinals. Bialkowski’s popularity at the club is illustrated in his winning the player of the year award in three consecutive seasons, the players’ player of the year award twice as well as the supporters’ player of the year award.

“I’ve got such good memories of Mick,” Bialkowski said. “He signed me for Ipswich and I would say he’s very similar to the gaffer here in terms of dealing with the players, training-wise there are similarities.

“We as players were all gutted when he left. There was not one single player in the dressing room who didn’t like Mick or want him to succeed. But Ipswich is a big club and the fans didn’t like the way he played, the style. Maybe the change was needed for the club, but we all were gutted.”

Ipswich were relegated last season and Bialkowski knew he needed to leave. He had signed a three-year deal the previous summer but had an amicable conversation with boss Paul Lambert, and when Millwall expressed an interest he had his mind set on moving to south London.

Given what’s happened in his career Bialkowski shouldn’t have expected a straightforward transfer, and sure enough his Lions medical threw up an issue based on that old knee injury.

The permanent switch, for a fee of around £900,000, was off as the clubs tried to renegotiate new terms.

Bialkowski said: “I was gutted because since the operation on my knee thirteen years ago I didn’t have any problem with it, touch wood. But obviously the club were spending big money on me and they had some concerns about the future.

“I was disappointed but there was nothing I could do about it. Obviously I tried to leave it to my agent but I was involved in it because I just needed a change. As soon as Millwall was on the cards I was speaking to my agent almost every day asking about progress.

“I was so relieved and happy to finally sign and be here.”

Bialkowski also did some interesting research before finally joining the Lions on loan. “We’ve all heard about Millwall supporters and the rivalry with West Ham. I’ve watched a few films about it, Green Street, a very good film, I really enjoyed it. It seems surreal that I’m here now.”

Bialkowski recalled his first encounter with his new boss Neil Harris. “Very good, very good,” he smiled. “When I came here six, seven weeks ago I met him and he gave me a hug. It was a very good impression.

He’s a very nice guy, a very good guy.

Obviously he wants to be successful as a manager, he’s a club legend and wants to do very well for the team. He cares about it, he cares about the club and the players.”

Bialkowski’s debut came sooner than he expected, when he replaced the injured Frank Fielding 43 minutes into Millwall’s opening game of the season against Preston last Saturday.

Neither stopper had a save to make in the 1-0 win, as Millwall made a promising start after a disappointing last campaign.

“Forget about last season,” Bialkowski said. “The season before Millwall finished eighth just outside the play-offs. This summer the gaffer has signed some really good players and I think we showed on Saturday that we can compete, Preston are a very good team and finished on a high last year.

“We want to be competitive. I’m not here for another relegation battle, this club deserves more than that.”

After some of the disappointments he has endured in his career, so does Bialkowski.

Lions face intense month

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris has offered encouragement to those who didn’t feature last weekend against Preston by saying he will need to use his full squad this month.

The Lions play six more games in 22 days in August, including the first round of the League Cup against West Brom next week.

Millwall are already without Frank Fielding after just one game with the club looking for another goalkeeper at the time we were going to press.

“I said to the players this week I’ve never been involved in a dressing room where the manager has picked a team – whether it’s my decision to pick a team or when I was a player – in the first league game and then picked the same team at the start of September. It just doesn’t unfold like that.

“Every player that has been involved in pre-season needs to keep pushing. Everybody come the end of the second West Brom game will be up to match fitness.

“If we’re going to be a side this year that competes we’re going to have to be the same as we were for parts last year but certainly the season before that and two seasons before that in League One: really hard to beat, hardworking and then when we do have the ball use it well.

“We have to know when to use the ball and when to go more direct. At times it was good at the weekend but then it was a game that watching it back lacked a little bit of quality in the final third, but

there was a real tempo to it. There was a lot of aggressive and competitive play and that’s when we’re at our best.

“There will be changes, we’ve got West Brom twice in four days.

There will be an opportunity for every player in the squad.”

Harris will pit his wits against former Wet Ham boss Slaven Bilic, who was appointed in the summer as the permanent successor to Darren Moore.

The Baggies won 2-1 at Nottingham Forest on the opening day. Bilic’s biggest signing so far this transfer window is Romaine Sawyers from Brentford.

Harris added: “He’s got great experience, Slaven, played in the Premier League and internationally. He’s got a really good group of players that were very close last year to Premier League football.

“He’s added some more players and reading his quotes from after the game Saturday wants to add even more.

“They’re a real threat for us to deal with, a real attacking force.

But we showed against West Brom last year we can compete.

“We take the positives from the game Saturday and how defensively sound we were. I noticed a lot of people from Preston bemoaning their poor play but I thought they played alright.

They just couldn’t break us down.”

MILLWALL WERE hoping to complete a loan deal for Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Luke Steele before the close of the summer transfer window on Thursday evening.

The Lions need cover for Bartosz Bialkowski after Frank Fielding was ruled out for several weeks with an injury to his quad.

Fielding was injured taking a goalkick on his debut at The Den last Saturday, with Bialkowski coming on for his own debut and keeping a clean sheet in the 1-0 win.

That would have left only 20-yearold Ryan Sandford as back-up to Bialkowski ahead of Millwall’s second game of the season against West Brom this Saturday.

Steele is an experienced goalkeeper who started his career at Peterborough before Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United signed him in 2002.

He moved to Barnsley in 2008 and then Greek top-flight club Panathinaikos in 2014. Steele returned to England with Bristol City in 2017 before moving to Forest a year later. He made two league appearances for the latter, starting the last game of the season, a 1-0 win over Bolton.

Harris also hadn’t ruled out another signing if the right player became available. Tom Elliott wasn’t at Millwall’s open training session at The Den on Monday morning as he continued to be linked with a move away.

Harris revealed the club had not received any enquiries for any of their first-team players. Last August Middlesbrough bid for George Saville in the first week of the season and the midfielder left the Lions on the final day of the window on August 31, with Millwall replacing him with Ryan Leonard.

“I’m quite relaxed because we’ve done so much business and we feel we’ve done good business. There hasn’t been any calls, touch wood, for any of our players,” Harris said on Monday.

“We’re not overly looking for anyone else, apart from having an eye on the goalkeeping department with Frank’s injury.

“It’s quite a nice position to be in compared to January and certainly to last August. But you never say never in transfer windows especially with the amount of money in the game.

“So I won’t sleep completely easily until after Thursday.”

Morison, who will be 36 later this month, triggered an extra year in his Millwall contract last season before joining the Shrews on a season-long loan.

The former Lions captain made his debut for the League One club last Saturday in their 1-0 win over Kenny Jackett’s Portsmouth.

Morison played 335 times across three spells with the Lions, scoring 92 goals, after joining first from Stevenage in 2009. He is equal-fifth on the club’s all-time scorers list.

Meanwhile, former Millwall goalkeeper David Forde has announced his retirement from playing.

Forde made 339 appearances for the Lions after joining from Cardiff in 2008. He left Millwall to sign for Portsmouth on loan in 2016 and spent the last two seasons of his career with Cambridge United.

Forde tweeted: “The time has come to lay down my gloves for the last time. I have been truly blessed. To receive the honour and privilege to wear the crests and colours of incredible teams.

Thank you all so much.”
