SOUTH LONDON and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust has been rated ‘good’ overall but acute wards and community-based care still ‘require improvement’ over safety concerns.

Inspectors returned to visit acute wards for adults and psychiatric intensive care, community-based mental health services for adults, long stay/rehabilitation mental health wards and perinatal services throughout April and May of this year.

Last November, the healthcare watchdog branded the trust’s acute wards ‘inadequate’ despite a ‘good rating’ overall as the trust struggled to cope with high demand but limited resources.

The latest report, published on Tuesday, July 30, showed that the trust had achieved significant improvements.

It praised a ‘high calibre board’ and said the number of matrons had increased to help teams give highquality care.

Patients were receiving care closer to home and the enthusiasm and commitment of staff was praised, as was a focus on black and minority ethnic staff and ensuring diversity at all levels.

But some of the most pressured areas of care – including acute wards – are rated ‘requires improvement’.

Although patients were less likely to face delays in being discharged, and the use of the face-down prone restraint had markedly dropped, there were some cases where care guidelines were not being followed and the sheer number of patients needing support also posed difficulty.

Dr Paul Lelliott, Deputy Chief Inspector and lead for mental health for the CQC said: “There is some very good care provided by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and there have been improvements since our last inspection.

“There are some breaches of regulations and I’d like to see them addressed quickly.

“Patients are still affected by the ongoing extreme pressures on the acute care pathway.

“Bed occupancy remains above 100 per cent on most wards, which meant staff might not have been able to manage the care of patients safely.

“There was not always a bed available for someone who needed one.

“The trust had placed 300 patients in out-of-area beds between February 2018 and December

2018”.

Responding to the announcement from the CQC, Beverley Murphy, director of nursing at the Maudsley, paid tribute to the trust’s staff: “This is a very positive result and only possible because of the hard work of both frontline staff and all those who provided support to ensure that improvements could be made.

“We are proud of our staff and we are grateful for their continued support.”

She went on to say: “Although there is more still to do to improve in the safety domain, we have shown over the last year our ability to deliver significant improvements and we are confident that we can make the changes we need.

“Most importantly, the improvements we have delivered have made a real difference for the people who use our services.”

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Free meals to be offered at all statefunded nurseries FREE MEALS will be offered in all state-funded nurseries across Southwark to combat food poverty and help narrow the gap between middle-class and poorer pupils before they start school, writes Katherine Johnston...

Ninety-two-per-cent of primary school aged children in the borough already take up the offer of free lunches, and extending the scheme to maintained nurseries and school nursery classes aims to support families struggling financially.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety and public health, said: “In Southwark we are proud to have been one of the first boroughs to provide Universal Free Healthy School Meals to all our primary schools.

“We know this makes a difference to our young people and our families.

“We think it is vitally important that our primary age children are entitled to a free nutritious lunch and are pleased to say over 92% of our pupils take up this offer.

“Building on this success, we are now extending an offer of healthy food to all maintained nurseries and school nursery classes because we want to support families in Southwark, at a time when we know many are struggling.”

One in four children in Southwark start reception either overweight or obese and one in three have had problems concentrating because they are hungry.

Unhealthy food including fast food is often the cheaper and quicker option for parents struggling to make ends meet or with having the time to cook from scratch.

The free meals scheme will benefit 62 nurseries and 2,800 children as it is rolled out in phases to summer 2020.

Although the cost has not yet been fully determined, £200,000 has already been earmarked for the first wave of funding this financial year.

AN EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD from Peckham is competing for the Magnolia Cup at Goodwood Racecourse today just months after first sitting on a racehorse.

Khadijah Mellah, who learned to ride at Loughborough Junction’s Ebony Horse Club, will race against seasoned riders including Olympian Victoria Pendleton at 1.20pm today, on Charlie Fellows-trained thoroughbred Haverland.

Her incredible story is being captured in a TV documentary, Riding a Dream, due to air in the autumn, which she hopes will show

other Muslim girls they can achieve anything they set their minds to after she began training in earnest in April.

Since finishing her A Levels she has been riding several times a day and putting in time in the gym and on a mechanical horse to polish her technique.

She said: “I know it sounds weird but you don’t understand how fast race horses are until you’ve sat on one!

“It’s crazy to think of my journey over the last couple of months but a big part of my life has been proving people wrong.

“There are definitely a fair few guys out there who would struggle to do what I am doing and I am

thrilled that I am part of shift in social understanding of what women can achieve and what they can be good at.

“There’s quite a stereotype around Muslim girls and them ‘not being able to follow their sporting passions and dreams’.

“I want to be a role model to anyone who wants to do something that they wouldn’t initially believe was in their comfort zone and allow people to follow their aspirations and dreams.”

A well-known character in Rotherhithe and the King of Uganda - plaque unveiled

A BLUE plaque was unveiled at the Rotherhithe home of the exiled first Ugandan president on Friday.

The flat, at 28 Orchard House on Lower Road, was the home of King Edward Frederick Muteesa II – and was where he died in contested circumstances.

‘King Freddie’ was exiled from Uganda in 1966, and died at the Rotherhithe flat in November 1969, supposedly from selfinflicted alcohol poisoning.

But speculation has long abounded that Muteesa II was murdered - an idea which veteran BBC journalist John Simpson, who interviewed the king hours before his death, also believes to be true.

The plaque was unveiled by the Buganda Heritage Association, the historic kingdom of which he was ‘Kabaka’, and was paid for with the help of the three councillors for the area.

“We are incredibly proud of our diverse community,” said Rotherhithe ward councillor, Bill Williams.

“Over the years Rotherhithe has been home to people from all over the world who have made a positive difference and we are pleased and honoured King Frederick Muteesa in this way.”

Cllr Kath Whittam also attended the unveiling ceremony, alongside family and friends of the Kabaka and representatives of the Buganda Heritage Association.

This November will mark half a century since King Muteesa’s death.

POLICE INVESTIGATING a racist and homophobic incident at Bellingham station have released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to.

On June 21 at around 11.40am, two men launched into a racist and homophobic abuse at two other men on the platform.

The pair also made “lewd comments” to a young girl, and threatened a member of the public who tried to intervene with violence.

The train is understood to have been going from Bellingham to Elephant and Castle, where the two men are believed to have gotten off.

A 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

TWO MEN in their twenties suffered stab and slash wounds on Rotherhithe’s Aylton Estate on Sunday, July 28.

Police said they were called to reports of a group of males fighting armed with knives on Rotherhithe’s Renforth Street shortly after 4.45pm.

Alongside the London Air Ambulance and London Ambulance Service, police found two men aged

22 and 26 “suffering from stab and slash injuries.”

In the latest update given to media by officers, their condition was described as ‘non-life-threatening’.

Officers established a crime scene on the estate and imposed a Section 60 order in the surrounding area until 5am on Monday morning.

The power meant that police were able to stop and search without suspicion for a limited time.

However, police told the News this week that there had not yet been any arrests and inquiries continue.

Southwark makes £1.4 M from filming

TV ANd film sets in Southwark generate £1.4 million a year for the borough’s economy, new figures show.

As the News reported this month, film crews are increasingly providing paid work and training experiences for people while filming in Southwark, with large donations to TRAs from production companies also funding projects from annual fun days to charity work.

Figures published by Southwark Council show that nearly 1,000 days’ worth of filming took place in Southwark in the financial year 2018-19.

It is estimated that £1.4 million is put back into Southwark’s economy through this investment – for example by creating work for supporting industries such as caterers, financial and marketing services and stewarding.

TWO MEN FLED INTO SOUTHWARK AFTER RAID AT LOUIS VUITTON’S

CITY OF London police have launched a witness appeal after two men raided a Louis Vuitton store in central London armed with an axe, hammer and machete.

Police believe the moped-riding suspects fled over London Bridge into Southwark after stealing £5,000 of goods from the store at the Royal Exchange.

The authorities were alerted to the suspected raid at 1.30am on Wednesday July 7. Now they want to hear from anyone who may have seen the moped around that time in London Bridge or Bank.

“We would like to ask anyone who was in the area at the time of this incident, or who may have important information that could assist our investigation, to contact us,” Detective Inspector Andrew Clarke.

“We are particularly keen to speak to any road users who may have dashcams or cameras fitted to their car or bike, and who may have seen a moped travelling quickly with two passengers in the Bank/London Bridge area around 01.25hrs – 01.40hrs on Wednesday morning.”

Southwark care leavers will have ‘best career support in UK’

CARE LEAVERS in Southwark will now have some of the best education and career support offered in the country after the council and leading organisations in the borough came together with a new pledge.

Last week, Southwark’s Care Leaver Covenant was formally launched at a packed event at King’s College London.

The scheme aims to create a level playing field for young people leaving the care system who do not have the opportunities and advantages that come from having an extended family.

King’s College is a leader in this area, providing a package of support for students who have been in the care system.

This includes providing accommodation for 52 weeks a year and entry requirements that take into account the challenges faced by children in care and lack of family support.

The university’s director of social mobility and student success, Anne-Marie

Canning, described the launch as ‘an important milestone’ in the borough.

It is hoped the Care Leaver Covenant will encourage many more employers and educational establishments to think about what they can do to help young people from care achieve their potential.

Francis, a Southwark care leaver who spoke of his experiences at the event, said: “There are many ways in which we, as care leavers, are pre-judged because of a lack of understanding. For example, people might not realise that care leavers are more likely to have mental health issues and need extra support at work.

“But we have many strengths too, and are often really determined and driven, but people don’t always see past the stereotype. That’s why it was so amazing to see so many people come together to launch the covenant, and find out what they can do to make a real difference to young people leaving care.”

One of King’s medical students, Michelle Sebele, who grew up in care, said: “It has been immensely inspiring to be a part of the launch of Southwark’s

Care Leaver Covenant. Hearing about the aims and current partnerships in the works has been reassuring to know that the voices of care-experienced young individuals are being heard.”

Southwark Council’s cabinet member for children, schools and adult social care, Cllr Jasmine Ali, said all too often care leavers suffered a ‘double blow’.

“We know that the young people in our care have a lot to offer,” she said.

“For too long children in care have suffered a double blow, often having a difficult start to life and then not having the help they need to succeed in adulthood.

“In Southwark, we are saying this isn’t good enough, and we all need to pull together as a borough to support our care leavers.

“We are a borough filled with innovation and opportunity, and so we are asking everyone to think about what they can offer to give a young person that first step on the ladder, or a helping hand to progress in their career.”

MILLWALL FOOTBALL Club has welcomed a revised approach to the New Bermondsey development, saying it was particularly encouraged by the potential termination of a conditional land sale agreement for plots of land around The Den.

In a statement on Friday July 26, the club said it “fully endorses” comments made by the developer Renewal and Lewisham Council over the New Bermondsey development.

Two days earlier Renewal announced a fresh approach to the 30-acre development, including an increase in the number of planned affordable homes, and a new arrangement to allow Millwall to make improvements to the Den. “Over the past year, there have been many very constructive meetings between all interested parties and their advisers, as a result of which new plans for New Bermondsey are in active and positive discussion,” said the club.

“The means to a successful development are being put in place and we are particularly encouraged by the fact that Lewisham Council and Renewal recognise that the current conditional land sale agreement which allows the Council to sell the freeholds of land leased to Millwall FC must be terminated in order for the club to

progress to a planning application.

“Millwall has always been in favour of the urban regeneration project for the area around our stadium and we wish to play our part in helping to make it happen on the land that is leased by the Football Club and the Millwall Community Trust.”

Further details of what the revised plans would mean for Millwall and The Den would be shared in the autumn once they had been fully realised, the club added.

Lewisham Council said it also could not confirm any additional details on the revision of plans until the autumn as discussions were ongoing – but added they were “positive and constructive.”

“We are now updating all councillors on these discussions and anticipated next steps,” said a council spokesperson.

“In his first week as Mayor of Lewisham, Damien Egan wrote to Millwall Football Club and Renewal to bring all parties together to work out a way forward for the site.”

The development had previously been mired in controversy when Lewisham Council made moves to forcibly purchase plots of land near the Den for Renewal’s use in the development, against Millwall’s wishes. It had raised fears that the club could be forced out of the area.

However, a more constructive atmosphere had been hailed between the club, developer and council in January this year, following six months of talks between all parties.

THE TEENAGE daughter of a lifelong Millwall fan who passed away unexpectedly has asked Lions supporters to join her in a moving tribute to her dad on the first game of the season.

Lifelong fan Steve Murrell, who grew up in Peckham and lived in Kennington, sadly suffered a sudden blood clot on July 20.

His daughter Maisie, 15, has appealed to Millwall fans to mark her doting dad’s memory by clapping on the 57th minute of Saturday’s game - as Steve was only 57years-old when he died.

“We’ve all bought as many tickets as possible to get the family down to make this clap. It would mean the world to Maisie to make this happen,” said Louise Gaul, Steve’s niece and goddaughter.

“I know he’s looking down, but it’s such a shame he’s not here to see it all. We were all so shocked, it was so sudden and unexpected.”

The dad-of-three – to Maisie, Billy, 29 and Kerry, 25 – had been fetching lunch for his family at a garage near to his home when he was taken ill and collapsed.

An off-duty doctor who happened to be jogging by at the time of Steve’s collapse attempted to give him CPR while the emergency services were called, but he sadly could not be saved.

“We’d like to say a massive thank you to the off-duty doctor who helped him and all the emergency services who helped him, they tried so hard,” added Louise.

Millwall FC has also told the family it will encourage fans to take part in the emotional tribute by making an announcement over the tannoy and putting details of Maisie’s appeal in the programme.

“We’re blown away by the generosity, it’s so nice there’s going to be this nice tribute to him. We couldn’t ask for anything more really,” Louise said.

Louise paid tribute to her Uncle Steve, an electricals company worker, as a ‘lovely, friendly bloke’, and a ‘typical old fashioned south London lad’who loved pie ‘n’ mash.

“I'm going to miss him and his big bear hugs so much,” she said. “He was hardworking and really supportive to everyone who needed him.”

The family have been inundated with messages in memory of Steve, particularly

from Millwall fans, as he was a familiar sight at the Den. He first attended a game when he was just six years old with his father – who had to lift him over the turnstiles, he was so small - and would reminisce about calling out to player Harry Cripps.

Despite the game often being in full flow, Cripps would come over to Steve for a quick chat.

The Millwall passion was passed onto Maisie when she was around the same age, too – and father and daughter were dedicated ticket holders ever since.

A SERIAL sex pest has been jailed yet again after offending only hours after his release from prison.

Derrick Robins, 70, was released from a south London prison on May 16 and was headed for a probation meeting in Croydon.

But shortly after his release, Robins breached the terms of his Sexual Harms Prevention Order (SHPO) at a McDonald’s in Camberwell’s Denmark Hill.

Unknown to the sex offender, plainclothes police were nearby and witnessed his behaviour towards two young women – and they immediately arrested him.

Since 2013 he has been convicted of nineteen different sexual offences.

Among them are convictions for touching himself in a high street bank and being ‘sexually inappropriate’ to rail staff.

“Robins is a serial sex offender who has a history of targeting women throughout London,” said Detective Sergeant Andy Jordan from the British Transport Police.

“He has a history of pestering women, making inappropriate comments and exposing himself to members of the public.”

In the year to February 2019, council properties had, on average, eleven days where their hot water or heating, or both, were not working, described by the council itself as “far below an acceptable standard”.

Boilers on the Wyndham Estate in Camberwell are being rebuilt to the tune of half a million and a similar amount of cash has been ploughed into patching up the Aylesbury Estate in Walworth.

Cllr Kieron Williams, cabinet member for housing and modernisation at Tooley Street, said: “During the cold snap last winter we had significant issues with some of our older heating systems, particularly on two of our larger housing estates - Aylesbury and

Wyndham.

“We always get these repaired as soon as possible but unfortunately these repairs took longer than normal due to the complex work needed.

“We are doing everything we can to try and make sure this doesn’t happen again including committing to a programme of investments for our heating systems.

“In the meantime we can only apologise for the inconvenience and offer compensation to those affected.”

Fixing its creaking communal boilers and making the network environmentally friendly, as part of a commitment to go carbon neutral by 2030, is increasingly seen as one of the council’s biggest logistical and financial challenges.

Currently serving 17,000 homes, the heating network is believed to require around £350 million over the next 40 years.

Entitled “We’ve Come A Long Way”, the booklet includes first-hand accounts of moving to the UK from the Caribbean and new poems.

Golden Oldies is a creative writing programme supported by the Mayor of London-funded ‘Culture Seeds’ programme.

A FUNDRAISER has been launched in memory of a missing student whose body was recovered from the Thames last week.

Menelik Mimano went missing from the Southbank area on Tuesday July 24, sparking a police appeal.

The same day, police were called to reports of a person in difficulty in the river by Waterloo Bridge, but could not find any trace. Mr Mimano had last been seen heading in the direction of Waterloo Station.

A body recovered at Canary Wharf two days later is believed to be that of Mr Mimano, originally from Beckenham.

A GoFundMe page set up in Menelik’s memory on Monday raised nearly

£7,000 in just a day amid an outpouring of tributes to the popular 26-year-old.

“Since Menelik’s passing the love that has emanated through and between everyone who knew him has been overwhelming and a sign of the effect he had on us all,” the page description reads.

“I am shaken by Menelik’s sudden death. He was a very talented young man with a lot to give and he will be sorely missed,” said one moving tribute.

“I was at the pub with him only two weeks ago,” said another.

“What a shocking thing to have happened. All my love to your family.”

Money raised will go towards a funeral for Menelik, including flowers, marquee hire and a plaque.

The graffiti appeared overnight on Saturday morning in several locations on and around Horselydown Lane, in between Tower Bridge and Shad Thames.

A majority of the tags referred to a mysterious ‘David Lewis’, while another example referred to a person named ‘Cain’.

“Not sorry – David Lewis” read one, “thank you for everything – David Lewis” said another, while a third example read: “Yes – David Lewis.”

One Horselydown Lane resident who contacted the News about the vandalism alleged that the painted names were ‘clearly’ references to staff at the worldfamous university.

“This is simply mindless vandalism of private property that is very upsetting for our community,” said the resident who did not wish to be named.

“We now have to spend literally thousands of pounds on repairs.”

He speculated that the spray-painted names could be the result of postgraduation celebrations.

“LSE received reports of alleged vandalism over the weekend and is looking into the matter,” a spokesperson for the university told the News.

A block in nearby Butler’s Wharf is used for self-catered LSE student halls, accommodating up to 280 postgraduates.

However the spokesman added that while postgraduate students at the university were currently in residence in the halls, there was no evidence to link them to the tags.

SIXTY FIREFIGHTERS RACE TO 27 STOREY TOWER BLOCK BLAZE

SIXTY FIREFIGHTERS tackled a 'small' blaze at a 27-storey tower on Deptford's Pepys Estate last Sunday night.

Eight fire engines were called to the scene of the blaze in a bin room at the estate on Oxestalls Road at 8.40pm.

A number of residents had left their flats in the 27-storey on the estate before firefighters arrived at the scene, with

others safely remaining in their homes.

Part of the ground floor bin chute was damaged by the fire, the cause of which is still under investigation by the authorities.

Firefighters from Deptford and the surrounding areas safely got the fire under control shortly after 10pm.

It comes after a fire in the early hours of Saturday morning on Tower Bridge Road.

Twenty five firefighters were called to the blaze in a disused shop shortly before

3am.

No-one was reported to be injured, but flats on the first and second floors above the shop were damaged.

"Just called through a fire on Tower Bridge Road," said one witness on social media.

"Not sure if above the tapas or cabbie or somewhere else as came from London Bridge way, hope everyone OK." The cause of that fire is also still under investigation by the authorities. It was safely contained at around 4.45am.

NEIL COYLE spoke movingly in Parliament last week about the devastating toll his mother’s mental illness and long-term detention had on his childhood.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP is lobbying to reform the Mental Health Act, legislation which gives the power to section someone for their own safety.

Coyle grew up in Luton, initially living with his brothers, sister and mother, a teacher, after she separated from Coyle’s father.

His mum was sectioned for the first time after developing schizophrenia ‘out of nowhere’ and ‘very fast’ while he was a young child.

She has now been detailed under the Mental Health Act more times than he can count, most recently in 2016, and often for stretches of weeks or months at a time.

In last Thursday’s speech – where he described how at one of the lowest points of her illness she set fire to the house to try and keep the children warm, a visibly emotional Coyle told his colleagues how his mother’s escalating mental health crisis led to his half-brother, Sebastian, being taken into care: “She was unable to look after him because she did not have support,” he said.

“He was initially fostered, but mum’s behaviour became too problematic.

“I went to see her once and the front door had been broken in.

“She told me that there had been a burglary, but nothing was missing, and it turned out that the police had had to be called because she had taken Sebastian from the foster carers and they had had to break in to take him back.

“He was formally adopted at five years old, and I have not seen him since.”

Sitting down with the News this week, Coyle said it surprised him just how hard it was to open up and tell his family story.

“I had practised it with family and others but there was one line I couldn’t even say, which was when I talked about Sebastian who was adopted after being taken off Mum, there’s no way he can’t remember us.

“He was five, he could not have possibly understood what on earth was going on and why he had to be with other people.

“My sister Alex taught him the words to ‘Don’t Worry Be Happy’ in mum’s white Astra and he must remember, it must bring something back to him.

“But I couldn’t say that on the day as I was already getting too upset.”

The key changes Coyle wants to see in a reformed Mental Health Act are making sure when a patient is detained they still have a say in their own treatment, and that family members and friends aren’t cut out of their care.

unwell, Coyle is also concerned about a rise in detentions across the board – pointing to a struggling mental health system that is not intervening early enough before people reach a crisis point, and calling for parity of funding in the NHS. Mental health services currently receive just 13 per cent of NHS cash and, in the last decade, across the country the rate of detentions has increased by 47 per cent.

In Southwark, in the last five years, the number of people detained at South London and the Maudsley NHS Trust has continued to rise, from 493 in 2015-16, to 607 from 2018-19.

When detained, severely mentally ill people are particularly vulnerable – with the Care Quality Commission sounding the alarm over cases of sexual assault in UK detention units.

And it’s not just frontline NHS workers struggling with the scale of

our mental health crisis.

Uses of Section 136 of the act, which gives police the power to ‘remove a mentally disordered person without warrant’ doubled between 2015-16 and 2017-18 in Southwark, from 60 to 121 detentions.

Although this figures has come down to 100 in the last year, it is clear the police are still left picking up the pieces where other services are failing.

Coyle says he is still learning to deal with the trauma of his past, but believes his experiences are fundamental to his work as an MP. Despite a troubled childhood – including three arrests including for shoplifting aged ten - Coyle excelled academically and went to University, eventually unseating Simon Hughes in 2015.

“I do see patterns of bad behaviour in myself that tend to be stressrelated, drinking too much

sometimes if I’m honest, but at least I’m aware enough to know that.”

“But this isn’t a pity me story. My experience has given me resilience and coping skills, and I can laugh through most things.

“People say they want ‘real people’ in Parliament, well I hope I fit that.

In his career so far, Coyle has shone a light on the impact of Universal Credit, austerity, and also drawn the ire of Corbyn-supporting activists for his outspoken criticisms of the party’s leadership and handling of allegations of antiSemitism.

Outside work his priority is his family – including wife Sarah and daughter Esme, who often join him at events across Southwark.

“Where we live in London she has every opportunity in front of her.

“But most importantly I’m not a Dad who’s nervous about saying I love you to my daughter.”

The first to be built are on what is known as ‘Package A’, on the ‘First Development Site’ in the overall regeneration plan from Southwark Council and housing association Notting Hill Genesis.

In total, this area includes 800 homes of which contractors are now building the first 229 – 84 per cent of which will be social homes. The full estate regeneration is now expected to be completed in 2036.

Foodbanks look for help this holiday

BERMONDSEY AND Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle is appealing to News readers to donate to the foodbanks and charities across the borough to help stop children going hungry during the schools holidays.

Last week the Labour MP chaired the latest meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group on food banks, and heard shocking statistics about the number of children going without meals after term ends.

Across the country, half a million children are reliant on charities for basic essentials.

In his constituency, Coyle has urged well-wishers to donate food, shower and sanitary products, and baby good like nappies to Southwark foodbank, Pecan, and other local charities who experience surging demand throughout July and August.

“The figures from Pecan, Oasis, the Central Southwark Community Hub and other independent local foodbanks show hundreds of Southwark kids needing feeding by charities this summer,” he told the News.

“This is shocking in our capital city in one of the wealthiest nations on the planet.

“Many of the children have working parents but are missing free school meals and become reliant on charity.

“There was a 32 per cent jump last year at the main foodbank, Pecan, who helped 146 children last August.

“This summer demand will be higher as Universal Credit takes its sad toll in our community. Please help if you can.”

Every single Ark Globe student has gained an offer to go to university upon completing the sixth form since 2017, including to Oxbridge.

The incredible turnaround has been marked with a new five-metre-wide mural named ‘Globe Wings’, depicting hundreds of dream jobs individually drawn and coloured-in by the students with support from a communications agency, Brands2Life.

The most popular choice is becoming a doctor, with a third of students over all keen to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

One in ten want to work in sport, with becoming a footballer – perhaps unsurprisingly – coming out top.

But while traditional careers dominate the most popular choices, there are also new professions and industries like game designers, Youtubers and influencers, and the school’s teachers say helping their pupils to adapt to the modern workplace and opportunities in new media is key.

“In order to help the next generation on their path to success, it is crucial for businesses to engage with them,” said principal Matt Jones.

“This is something that we pride ourselves on as a school, forging partnerships with businesses in the local community.”

HEPATITIS C CAN BE ELIMINATED BY 2025 SAYS THE MAYOR OF LONDON

WE CAN eliminate Hepatitis C by 2025, says Sadiq Khan, as he visits an outreach bus run by King’s College Hospital and The Hepatitis Trust helping Londoners get tested and cured.

The blood borne virus mainly affects the liver, but people can live for decades without symptoms until they are left with permanent liver damage, including fatal liver scarring and even cancer.

It is believed more than 14,000 people are living with the virus in London; but around half of them will be undiagnosed – leaving them and others at risk of complications from the disease.

However, new treatments now available mean many cases can be completely cured, and the NHS wants to eradicate the disease in England by 2025.

As the virus is spread from infected blood, risk factors include sharing needles, having a tattoo or piercing in unregistered premises, blood transfusions before 1991 when screening was introduced, or having medical procedures in countries with a high prevalence of hepatitis C, leading to it being described as a ‘disease of deprivation’.

Sadiq Khan visited the King’s College

Hospital and The Hepatitis C Trust’s outreach van, and the Manna Centre in London Bridge, which helps around 150 homeless people every day by offering food, showers, housing and welfare advice, computer access and medical care.

The new van will travel across central London and Kent offering finger-prick blood testing, with anyone receiving a positive diagnoses referred into treatment straightaway.

Hepatitis C is highly prevalent in rough sleepers and people struggling with drug addiction, groups who also face difficulty accessing care.

New tablet-form treatments can now cure 95 per cent of Hepatitis C cases, compared to just half previously.

There are also fewer side-effects than the old-style injections, which caused symptoms including hair loss, swollen limbs and extreme anxiety.

Speaking about the impact of a cure, Angelina Bass, who volunteers with The Hepatitis C Trust, said: “I was diagnosed with hepatitis C in 2005.

“I lived with the virus for over 12 years so know just how devastating hepatitis C is both mentally and physically.

“I was finally offered treatment in 2016 when I was given a three-month course of medication.

“In 2017 I was told I was hepatitis C negative which was such a relief. It felt

We don’t know where these will be located, but it is possible the impact on the surrounding areas on either side may not be much different than for the bridge.

Recent reports suggest that it is proposed to have two ferry berths at Nelsons Dock, adjacent to the Doubletree Hotel. We are unclear how cyclists or the ramp will be accommodated at this location. Cyclists currently wheel their bikes through the Hotel lobby.

Are low emissions/electric ferries really feasible? Given that they will be in constant use, how will they be recharged and is the required technology currently available? The alternative of three large diesel engines constantly operating at this location is not an attractive prospect.

May was in deep denial about how bad her Government was: failing on its own primary policy of Brexit and ignoring every other challenge facing people across the country.

I am not sad May is gone. But nor do I celebrate the way the wealthiest, most regressive elements of her Party bullied her out of office and now form the most right-wing Government our country has ever seen. We face very difficult times.

His career has been one of lies: he had to resign as a journalist for making up stories; he wasted millions of pounds as Mayor of London; he blundered as Foreign Secretary; and was sacked by a Tory leader for lying. In this very difficult time for our country, more serious leadership was required, but the Tories have imposed Johnson.

I hope the new Home Secretary will honour the commitment I secured to meet Southwark families and organisations working to tackle knife crime. I have met too many parents affected by this issue and there are too many families who have not yet seen justice. Violence needs to reduce but prosecutions must also occur where offences are committed. We have had more incidents recently, including a homophobic machete attack at Canada Water. Talking about the weather – tips for coping with the heat When it comes to hot weather, some I people are more vulnerable than others, N BRITAIN, we have an odd reputation for talking about the weather – a lot.

But being prepared for our unpredictable weather can be very useful – and sometimes life-saving, especially when our climate can impact our health and wellbeing.

For instance, many of us welcome periods of warm summer sunshine, but when temperatures do start to soar – as they’ve done recently – it’s important to be prepared so that hot weather doesn’t harm you or anyone you know.

Keeping cool is essential; avoid the heat by spending time in the shade when the sun is at its hottest – usually between 11am and 3pm.

If your house is too warm, try and regulate the temperature by opening windows for ventilation, or shutting blinds to keep out the sunlight. And you can always try a cool bath or

perpetrator. The police must be empowered to respond faster and all crimes should be punished, including hate crimes.

Parliament has finished until September, but my local work continues. I look forward to my shift with a Southwark police emergency response team in August and know the local officers need more numbers, powers and resources to do the job our community needs.

It has been great to join some of the summer fetes and parties taking place locally too. Summer brings

water being the best option – and limit drinks that contain caffeine or alcohol, as these can make you more dehydrated.

If you’re using public transport or spending long periods of time in the heat, be sure to carry some water with you and keep topping up. You should drink enough so that your urine is a pale, clear colour.

Dual crossword THE MENTAL HEALTH ACT DOES NEED REFORM

EIL COYLE’S story will be all too familiar to anyone living with a chronic mental health condition or with a family member struggling to get the care they need.

Much has changed since the 1980s, when his mother was first detained - sectioned -and given her diagnosis.

Treatments are better, care more humane, and our understanding of the condition – which is believed to have both genetic and environmental causes – more informed.

People with mental health problems are far more likely to hurt themselves than the people around them, but with the right support can live and work and have ‘normal’ lives.

Today though, shockingly, only five per cent of people with schizophrenia – like Neil’s mum are in work. Because, quite simply, the right interventions and support just aren’t there.

When issues aren’t addressed as soon as possible, things escalate to crisis point.

For Coyle, this meant his half-brother was taken into care. His mother has also been convicted for a driving offence long after he and his siblings repeatedly raised the alarm she had stopped taking her medication.

Someone as unwell as her should never have been in court.

Frustratingly, as a child and teenager he often went for weeks without seeing her in hospital and had next to no input into the type of care she received, knowing her pills were making her vomit constantly to the point of losing her teeth, and causing severe weight gain.

Today, forced treatments and restrains are still being used in some detention units. But alternatives may be less traumatic on the patient but still have the same effect.

Detentions separate families and are hugely expensive. The human cost is most painful, but the financial cost – tens of thousands per stay – is one the NHS can ill-afford.

It’s time to put funding in the right places, reform the mental health act, and give people like Neil’s mother the dignity they deserve.

Bard are the chances?

The song’s catchy lyrics – “I'm gonna take my horse to the old town road / I'm gonna ride 'til I can't no more” – have helped the ditty spend 17 weeks at the top.

But the song has become popular much closer to home as well, with locals adapting the lyrics to sing about the Old Kent Road.

Tesco itself has even gotten in on the fun, with a spokesman supplying the song’s refrain: “Can’t nobody tell me nothin’” while adding its own slogan: “Every little helps.”

Rose theatre producer links to the Bard

A THEATRE producer who stages Shakespeare’s plays at a venue inspired by the Bankside’s Rose has reportedly discovered he has an unusual family link to the Bard.

James Cundall is founder of Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre in York, a temporary structure which is takes its name from and is modelled after the Rose Playhouse, the first Elizabethan theatre venue on Bankside. The venue is where Shakespeare learned his craft, having been built before The Globe.

IN SOUTH Bermondsey, sausage roll fans have been noticing that Greggs has been employing a bouncer.

“Only in Bermondsey would you find a Greggs with a security guard,” says one. But the phenomenon is not new.

“The South Bermondsey branch of Greggs has a bouncer, who checks you out before permitting you entry,” spotted out another passer-by earlier this year.

The bouncer has been on-duty at the branch since at least 2017, particularly during times when Millwall are playing at the nearby Den. Last year, a spokesperson for the bakery chain told media that the measure was an ‘occasional’ additional security measure employed at its branches on a shop-by-shop basis.

A PECKHAM man who exposed himself to women on multiple occasions across south-east London has been sentenced.

Godwin Bassey, 35, of Peckham’s Chesterfield Way, was sentenced to a two-year Community Order at Inner London Crown Court on Friday, July 26 for his crimes.

He was also put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years.

Bassey committed his offences in the Peckham and New Cross areas over an

11-month period.

The court heard how he would target lone women or women walking in pairs, often using parked cars to hide behind before pouncing on them.

The 35-year-old would expose himself, and when challenged, would flee the scene. He was arrested in Brimmington Park by officers who had linked a series of similar exposure offences.

When police swooped on Bassey to make their arrest on February 18, he became violent, injuring several officers in the struggle.

HEAT STROKE: 500 bathers storm lido

FIVE HUNDRED would-be bathers shut down Brockwell Lido last week after allegedly trying to storm into the outdoor pool without paying.

Police confirmed they were called to the lido and gym on Dulwich Road at midday last Thursday after receiving reports of overcrowding at the complex in Brockwell Park.

Frustration was building as people queued for 3-4 hours in the hope of having a dip as temperatures across England reached nearly 38 degrees.

Officers said security staff had shut the doors and were desperately trying to keep the huge crowd from rushing through, in scenes described as 'shocking' by onlookers.

One witness, Joanna Andrews, said on twitter: “Kids jumping the roof to

hand, said police. Police also say given the ‘volume of his offending’, there may yet be more of Bassey’s victims yet to come forward.

“Bassey targeted vulnerable, lone women for his own sexual gratification, striking fear into his victims,” said Detective Constable Sandy Peters, of the South Area Command Unit.

“He was caught after a long and complex police investigation and I would like to thank all those victims who came forward and showed great resilience to support us throughout the investigation.

“I would also like to thank my

colleagues, several of whom were injured during arresting Bassey, who played an integral part in his arrest and conviction.”

Bassey’s sentencing comes after he pleaded guilty to seven counts of exposure and one count of assault with intent to resist arrest in May. Eleven other exposure offences were also taken into account during sentencing.

Police urged anyone who may have been a victim of Bassey’s but had not yet come forward to do so on 101 and quoting CAD 4120/03JUL19.

“Officers will ensure you receive the correct support,” Scotland Yard added.

Others offered their sympathy to staff caught up in the ordeal: “Let’s have some thoughts for the staff having to manage this type of behaviour.

“It must be really tough having this treatment [at] such an important local facility.”

Although officers stayed at the scene for four hours, they did not make any arrests, and the Lido reopened the following day.

Bridge given a cooling off

TOWER BRIDGE had to be manually cooled down during the sizzling heatwave on Thursday, July 25 – because the heat could have forced it to jam shut.

The extreme temperatures of over 36c saw the two sides of the bridge expand, leading to fears that the 15mm gap separating them would disappear.

Without the gap the bridge – which

carries around ten thousand vehicles across the Thames daily – would have been unable to open for its four scheduled lifts a day, sparking commuter chaos.

Jeremy Simons, Chair of the City of London Corporation’s Port Heath and Environmental Services Committee, said: “On a day of such extreme heat, we’re playing our part in ensuring that London stays on the move, including at iconic locations like Tower Bridge.

“With the help of a state-of-the-art

sweeping and cleaning fleet, our staff have been working around the clock to minimise disruption, while ensuring there is minimal impact on the environment.”

Teams of street sweepers sprayed cold water on the bridge an hour before each lift to prevent heat expansion and to keep the traffic flowing.

It comes after a daredevil climber was spotted by an Australian tourist the previous day scaling the bridge’s iconic blue sides, supposedly to take a selfie.

When husband Bud takes the children and a cow off to Illinois for a few days, she relishes the time at home alone to read and rest. Then Robert Kincaid turns up, a photographer for National Geographic who is a little lost. He seems like a nice man, pleasant and polite enough for Francesca to offer to show him the way to one of the famous roofed bridges of the coun-ty. Circumstance leads to her cooking Kincaid dinner and opening a long-forgotten bottle of brandy she had bought especially for a long-forgotten anniversary. Over the next couple of days their feelings for each other grow until there is a

tentative first kiss and onto what lies beyond. Theirs is very much a slow burn affair, heightened only by the strings of the small orchestra.

A great set moved around like a carproducing robot factory, bringing in bars, kitchens, bed-rooms, main streets, the open plains of America’s heartland and, of course, a bridge.

These were all enhanced with clever projections.

The lyrics push the narrative forward so much so that, in fact, the music could have been side-lined altogether.

The Bridges of Madison County is all about the story, so, for me, the songs got in the way, no matter how well they were sung. It is about a snapshot of a magical whirl-wind romance that

appears from nowhere and shows your life to be humdrum and ordinary; a love that catches you up in its vortex and spins you around to a crescendo until you have to make a quick decision on your future - and of those of your loved ones.

The Bridges of Madison County does that because of Trevor Nunn’s direction and great per-formances from all.

Hamlet Revives Elizabethan London With Beer

KEITH HOW was born in the old Lambeth Hospital and has lived his entire life in Kennington. He says he ‘kind of stumbled into acting’ when some years ago he helped a friend out on a production as an extra. ‘I liked the experience on set, so enrolled at Morley College on a series of drama courses and went on from there,’ he tells Michael Holland...

Like the majority of actors Keith struggled to find regular work so took courage from something actor Bryan Brown said in an interview: ‘If you make the film yourself, they can't tell you that you can't be in it’.

So Keith wrote Waste, put himself in it and will now watch his film have its world premier in The Cinema Museum, which is part of the

hospital that he was born in.

Waste tells the story of Charlie Peters, just released from prison and eager to rebuild a relationship with his estranged daughter, as well as stay on the straight and narrow, with Keith playing Charlie. ‘The basic idea for the film literally just popped into my head one day and I initially wrote it as a short film script, however, over several years it grew into a full length feature,’ says the man who has also written a biography of lifer Mick Hart: Condemnation to Commendation..

Funding film-making is notoriously difficult. How did Keith manage?

‘The film was shot 90% in Kennington and on a budget that most people will tell you is impossible to shoot a feature film on… Part of our small budget was raised by crowdfunding.’ Did he pull in a few favours? ‘Waste was only possible due to a dedicated cast and crew willing to work for little more than bus fare and a sandwich, and I’ll

be eternally grateful to them all for their commitment.’

This bawdy group of actors, producers and writers are committed to bringing you an unrestrained performance that firmly sticks its fingers up to tedium, choosing instead to celebrate the right to muck about on a grand scale.

So how do they achieve their goal?

They elect one cast member in turns to get steadily inebriated prior to going on stage. Drinking starts four hours beforehand so on the night we went, Ophelia, Madeleine Schofield, is nicely sozzled by the time she comes on stage.

Bizarrely, the cast are able to accommodate Ophelia’s craziness and, like a well-oiled machine, they all do their bit to integrate her antics into the performance. So, what you get is the classic Shakespearean script hilariously interrupted by a drunken, extremely animated, Ophelia who snaps in response to Hamlet, ‘I can’t be arsed to speak to him’. Nobody, knows

Ophelia’s next move so her unpredictability dominates the performance.

Uncertainty increases as Ophelia continues to drink on stage, a pint glass of beer gripped between her teeth at one stage, throwing down a screen in frustration. At times, you are aware of her vulnerability, spontaneously kissing the King (Mathew Seagar), before spitting lager in his face. Effectively, the drunken actor absorbs the light, we transfix on Ophelia, though still appreciate the spectacle of the play.

Voyeuristically we glimpse our own possible demonic alter ego, our potential for carnage. Plenty of drinking is done by audience members, a bar is situated in the auditorium. Loud too, a crazy mixture, cheering and jeering - we could be in Elizabethan London.

One for those seeking some laughter.

The exile and death of ‘King Freddie’

ON NOVEMBER 21, 1969, the now veteran BBC journalist John Simpson sat down for an interview in a small flat in Lower Road, Rotherhithe.

His subject was exiled Sir Edward Frederick William David Walugembe Mutebi Luwangula Muteesa II – the first President of Uganda, and more commonly known to the gossip columns of the British press as ‘King Freddie’.

Unknown to Simpson, this was the last interview the 45-year-old was to give: for only hours later, he was found dead on the floor of his bedroom by his bodyguard.

An autopsy revealed extreme levels of alcohol in his blood. The inquest found there were no suspicious circumstances – saying Muteesa II was an alcoholic.

“I interviewed him a few hours before his death, supposedly from alcoholic poisoning,” said Simpson on social media last week.

“He was charming, articulate and entirely sober. I've always suspected he was murdered.”

This suspicion was and is shared by others, including family friends of King Freddie. By the time of his death, he had become almost teetotal,

they have said. Some have even alleged that he was force-fed vodka by agents of the home regime.

As a prominent exiled critic of the ruling President Milton Obote regime in Uganda, threats were not unheard of.

“We got warning, people used to write and say somebody has been sent, be aware, take care,” one family friend, another Ugandan exile living in the capital, told the BBC in 2009, four decades after Muteesa II’s death.

“How did he die? We believe he was poisoned. And we have reason to think he was poisoned.

“The Ugandan government was involved. As long as he lived, he was a threat to the Ugandan government.”

If the manner of King Freddie’s death was dramatic, the backstory was no less so. At the time of his death, Muteesa II had been living in exile for three years and six months.

He had been the ‘Kabaka’ or king, of Buganda, the largest of Uganda’s four historic Kingdoms, and was the thenPrime Minister Milton Obote’s choice for President of the newly independent Uganda.

But in 1966, Obote made moves to promote himself to the Presidency, and to abolish the historic kingdoms.

He ordered soldiers led by Colonel Idi Amin – later to infamously seize power for himself in a coup – to storm

the Mengo Palace, the traditional home of the Kabaka.

The following year, a new constitution abolished the traditional kingdoms, including Buganda.

(Buganda was later reinstated by President Museveni in 1993).

Muteesa II was in the palace at the time at the time of the attack. He managed to escape over the palace wall - thanks partly to his military background.

Educated at Cambridge, Sir Edward was commissioned as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Grenadier Guards in 1947 before taking on his presidential duties in Uganda.

Following the palace siege, Muteesa II sneaked out of Uganda under a pseudonym, arriving in Burundi in June 1966. From there he boarded a cargo plane to Brussels, on its way to Gatwick.

Arriving in the capital, he was by many accounts both financially strapped and lost.

In his 1969 interview, King Freddie told Simpson that he received no support from the Ugandan government – despite being an exiled king and president – and relied on the generosity of friends.

Work, too, was complicated: by virtue of his status as former Kabaka of Buganda and president, he took pains not to be seen to profiteer or

cash-in from his position.

For safety reasons, he also could not take a job which required leaving the house at the same time every day. He eventually ended up in social work, he told Simpson.

The generosity of friends extended to the use of the Rotherhithe flat in Orchard House, which belonged to a long-standing acquaintance from the British Army.

But it was not always a happy place – at least not for his daughter, Princess Dorothy, who was in an English boarding school during his exile.

“The Bermondsey flat, it was really sad for me to be inside that flat,” she is quoted as saying.

“It wasn’t a happy place. It was a bit depressing. We used to make light of things, as if it was just a temporary thing. He was always hopeful.”

For two years, Muteesa II’s body remained in the capital, where it was temporarily buried. Obote petitioned the Wilson government to repatriate his body back to Uganda for burial.

The move was resisted amid fears that Sir Edward would not be given a traditional burial as befitting a Kabaka of Buganda and former President.

In 1971, despot Idi Amin seized power in a coup, ousting Obote. In February, Amin assembled a ministerial group to organise the

return of Sir Edward’s body to Uganda for burial.

Preparations complete, Muteesa II’s body was exhumed from its resting place in March that year and flown on a plane belonging to a London businessman to Uganda. Amin – who had led the siege on the Mengo Palace – arranged a state burial for Sir Edward.

His body was flown to various locations for public viewing, before being taken to the Kasubi tombs – the royal resting place of several Kabakas in the capital, Kampala.

Finally in April Sir Edward’s body was buried in the Kasubi tombs, in a traditional ceremony involving bark cloth being placed upon the coffin.

It remains to this day at the UNESCO World Heritage site, despite some of the site’s major traditional buildings being gutted by a blaze in 2010. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

On Friday, July 26, 2019 a blue plaque was unveiled by the Buganda Heritage Association to commemorate where Sir Edward lived and died at 28 Orchard House in Rotherhithe.

It was funded with the efforts of the three ward councillors for the area, Cllrs Bill Williams, Kath Whittam and Stephanie Cryan.

Surrey hope for record aggregate ticket sales of more than 100k

TOM CURRAN has had a curious summer so far, on the one hand being lauded throughout English cricket as a World Cup winner but also not bowling a single ball in anger during the tournament.

Indeed, the 24-year-old Surrey seamer did not play a game between May 27, the date of England’s final World Cup warm-up fixture against Afghanistan, and the start of Surrey’s Vitality Blast campaign on July 19.

On that evening, as Surrey were well beaten by Essex Eagles under the lights at Chelmsford, an understandably rusty Curran saw his three overs disappear for no fewer than 63 runs.

No wonder, then, that his stunning hat-trick against Glamorgan at the Kia Oval last week produced such an emotional celebration as he sprinted – head thrown back and arms spread wide in his familiar wicket-taking pose – almost to the boundary in front of the Peter May Stand, with the rest of Surrey’s team chasing him and a near 25,000 full house roaring its acclaim.

“Yes, it was a brilliant moment for me when I completed the hat-trick,” said Curran, who removed David Lloyd, Colin Ingram and Billy Root with the third, fourth and fifth balls of his opening new ball over to wreck Glamorgan’s top order.

Clearly shocked, the Welsh county soon subsided for 44 all out – the lowest total in domestic T20 history – in reply to Surrey’s 141 with spinners Imran Tahir and Gareth Batty also picking up three wickets apiece for minimal cost.

It was also a relief for Surrey’s players and supporters to get their

first Vitality Blast win under their belts after that opening defeat to Essex and then a 37-run loss to Middlesex in their second south group game.

“It has been an unbelievable summer so far,” added Curran.

“Being part of the World Cup squad was obviously a massive experience, but it’s also nice now to be back on the park and playing. I just haven’t had enough game time this season, and in that regard it’s been a frustrating time.

“I would definitely have liked to have played during the World Cup, of course, but then again England winning the tournament was something that was so much bigger than me playing a game or two.

Winning the World Cup is what it was all about.”

Curran took three for three in his two overs against Glamorgan, having finished with a tidy two for 29 in the London derby against Middlesex two evenings before, watched by another capacity crowd at the Kia Oval.

Curran then claimed another two wickets in last Friday’s tie with Sussex Sharks in Hove.

Surrey’s home game against Kent Spitfires on Tuesday (July 30) attracted advance ticket sales of around 18,000, and overall the club are confident that their seven home south group games can produce a record-breaking aggregate attendance well above the 110,000plus who came through the gate in 2018.

Their sole Friday evening fixture, against Gloucestershire on August 9, is already a 25,000 sell-out and tickets are also selling fast for the remaining home games against Sussex Sharks on Thursday August 15, Somerset on Tuesday August 27 and Essex Eagles on Thursday August 29.

Dulwich make a strong effort before washout

DULWICH MADE a valiant attempt to defy the elements in their AJ Fordham Surrey Championship Division 2 match against Oxted & Limpsfield last weekend, but the weather had the final say as the match was abandoned, writes John Lewis...

On a day when heavy overnight and morning rain caused many other games to be called off altogether, play at Dulwich was able to start only an hour late, with the match reduced to 83 overs. Dulwich put their opponents in to bat, but despite hostile probing by Jon Lodwick, who bowled seven overs for 18 runs, not all of which came off the middle of the bat, they were unable to make an early breakthrough. While the pitch had been covered and remained firm, the outfield was wet and made the ball soft and difficult to grip for the spinners.

Unusually it was Joe Murtagh who made the early running but Jack Lloyd soon started to catch him up. The pair had added 185 in 38.3 overs when Elliot Miles returned for a second spell to accept a return catch and dismiss Lloyd for 84, made off 106 balls. This was Dulwich’s first wicket for 74 overs and 346 runs against these opponents this season. Two hitters were sent in to try and speed the declaration, but both fell to Miles in his next over. The declaration came after 41 overs on 204-3, with Murtagh having just reached his century, off 130 balls. Miles was the only one of the six bowlers to take a wicket, finishing with 3-44 off ten overs.

Dulwich were left with 42 overs to get the runs, but got off to a bad start when skipper Ed Stolle was bowled in the second over. Chris Purshouse and Matt Marfani had taken the score to 25 after 7.4 when the rain became too heavy to continue. It was not possible to resume in time to complete the minimum 20 overs, so the match had to be abandoned.

Dulwich take just four points from this match, but none of the other sides in the division was able to force a win, so they remain in fifth place.

Next week they visit Dorking, who are one place and just two points above them in the table.

Bermondsey Rink Hockey club aiming to build on recent success

DULWICH HAMLET have resigned key centre-forward Dipo Akinyemi for the 2019-20 National League South season.

Akinyemi was out of contract this summer but has committed to Gavin Rose’s side for their second campaign in the sixth tier.

Akinyemi has scored 37 goals in 87 appearances for the Hamlet. He was

the club's top goalscorer last season with seventeen and played a key role in helping Hamlet survive their first season at National League South level.

Rose has also added Yannis Ambroisine and Aaron Barnes to his squad. Ambroisine is a French centreback who joins from Welling United.

He was born in Paris and played for French sides Entente SSG and Montreuil Red Star, before moving to England and signing for North Greenford United. He then had spells

Signed by Steve King for Whitehawk in December 2017, Ambroisine spent the remainder of the season there and then followed his manager to Welling United.

Having featured in all seven of Dulwich’s pre-season friendlies, Ambroisine will be a useful addition to Rose’s defence this year.

Right-back Barnes is formerly of Colchester United. He has been on

trial with Hamlet over pre-season and has impressed with his performances, particularly against Bromley and a Tottenham Hotspur XI. Barnes has been training with the rest of the squad and put pen to paper this week to sign a contract with Dulwich.

The 22-year-old was contracted to Colchester United last season, where he mostly featured for their Development Squad. He also had a loan spell at Torquay United when

they were last in the National League.

A product of the Arsenal Academy, Barnes joined Charlton Athletic at the age of sixteen. He spent four years with the Addicks, making his professional debut against Swindon Town in April 2017.

The new National League South season begins this Saturday away to Tonbridge Angels.

The Hamlet play their first home game on Tuesday, August 6 at 7:45pm against Wealdstone.

David Olayokun gave the Fish the lead with seven minutes left before Nana Boakye-Yiadom grabbed an 88th-minute equaliser.

New Fisher boss Allan Fenn has high hoped for the season despite budget difficulties.

“The people have given me a really warm welcome. I’m from the other side of the water but I have

huge respect for Fisher, with the history of the club, because of the fan base, the new stadium and the new history,” Fenn told Kentish Football recently.

“I want to take it to the next level and that’s promotion and getting the club more advertising, more sponsorship, more investment, which will then go to the staff and the playing staff because we’ve not got a penny between us at the moment, which I knew.

“We’ve got players who want to play for the club, who want to play for the fans and play for the badge.

“I’m excited to be here. Let’s get it right, it’s a wonderful club and I intend to be here for a long time.

“We’re under no illusions how difficult it’s going to be, especially with a new team, no budget. It’s going to be really difficult but what we can do is play with our heart on our sleeve and use my experience of getting a squad together to compete where we can be competitive, that’s the idea.

“Let’s be realistic about it all and the fact I have had to bring in 20 players.

Rather than keep 20, I’ve had to find 20.

“There’s some great players coming to us and they’ve turned down money to come here. They’re all doing it for nothing and that’s the most important thing. It just shows me how much they want to play for us.”

Fred said no to Den EXCLUSIVE

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris revealed Fred Onyedinma refused to play last season after being picked in the side.

Onyedinma, 22, completed a move to Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday for an undisclosed fee. The attacker signed a three-year deal with the League One side.

Millwall brought in Jason McCarthy from Wycombe on the same day, though they were separate deals. Wycombe will pay Barnsley some of the fee as part of a sell-on clause in the defender’s move from the Tykes to the Chairboys.

Harris had said previously Onyedinma didn’t want to play for the club again. But the Lions manager revealed to the News this week that Onyedinma told him he wasn’t going to play after being picked in games last season.

Onyedinma was involved in preseason and went to Portugal, where he featured in games against Fleetwood and Braga. Onyedinma wasn’t in the squad against Real Sociedad last weekend as he finalised his transfer away from south London.

Harris also said that Onyedinma didn’t want to play at The Den, and added that “outside influences” had affected the player.

“Jason comes in to Millwall, Fred’s gone the other way to Wycombe. Fred has got huge potential, I believe he’s a real talent and he’s enjoyed working with Wycombe in the past, the loan spells have been good for him,” Harris said.

“Fred made it abundantly clear to me last season that he didn’t want to play at The Den. A couple of times I picked him to play and he said he didn’t want to play.

“I think outside influences have got to Fred in recent times, and it’s a real shame because he could have had real potential with us as a group.

“He’s a lovely lad, a real character.

We’ve known him since he was very young at this football club. I gave him his debut.

“So it’s a sad day to see him go, but I wish him well and wish him every success in his development at Wycombe. I hope he performs very well for them.”

JAYSON MOLUMBY reckons he’s the perfect fit for Millwall – so much so he asked for the move once he heard about the interest.

Molumby, 19, signed for Millwall last week on a season-long loan deal from Brighton, and believes Lions fans will take to his all-action style.

Ireland under-21 captain Molumby revealed he turned down moves to League One and Scotland, where he would have likely gone straight into first teams, to come and battle for a spot in Millwall’s midfield.

Molumby revealed that when he knew he would be joining the club he looked up clips of Millwall fans on YouTube.

“After the initial contact when I heard there was interest it blew my mind,” Molumby said. “It was ‘wow’, it’s such a big club.

“I had a couple of offers abroad, I could have gone to Scotland and probably been guaranteed games there or in a lower level than the Championship but I wanted the challenge. Hopefully it can work out here.

“I like to tackle, I like to get up and down the pitch, get tight to people. I like the physical side and I’m not afraid to get stuck in.

“The fans here are unbelievable. I was looking up clips of the fans before coming here and you just think, ‘wow’. You know about them already and I’m just looking forward to playing for them now.

“I think I’ll enjoy the atmosphere, whatever way it goes, and just learn from the experience playing in front of them.”

One of the first people to make Molumby feel at home was fellow Irishman Shaun Williams.

“It’s been really good,”Molumby continued, “ the boys have made it a lot easier, I feel I’ve fitted in straightaway. They’ve all looked after me.

“Shaun’s a top guy. One of the first things he did was swap numbers with me and said to me, ‘if you need anything give me a shout, whatever it is’. That just shows what it’s like in the dressing room. He’s one of the leaders in the group and he’s taken me under his wing to try and look after me.

“I’m coming here to try and play.

There’s obviously really good midfielders here and I’m still young.

I want to learn off people like Lenny [Ryan Leonard], Shaunie is experienced, Ben [Thompson] is still young but I want to learn from people like that and keep improving.”

Molumby knew he wanted to move away this summer. The manager who gave him his debut, Chris Hughton, was sacked in May. Graham Potter took over, and Molumby was sad to see Hughton go.

He said: “It was a difficult time for the club, he’s a really good man around the place and I think everyone had a lot of respect for him. I certainly could never say a bad word about him. He did a lot for

me, even when I was injured, he looked after me and made sure I was alright.

“It was a bad couple of weeks for the club around that time. I told the [new] gaffer at Brighton I wanted to go out and play. I didn’t want a situation where I might have got a few games here or there, I wanted to try and come somewhere I was wanted and to hopefully play. I wanted to give it a go in first-team football somewhere.

“With Brighton I played a holding role but with Ireland I was up and down, box to box and getting at people. I probably do prefer the No. 8 role, getting up and down and having the freedom to go and press people.

“I’ve scored a few goals but I need to practise my finishing.”

Molumby is still short of match fitness. “I’ll be looking to get minutes next week, there might be a game arranged [at the training ground]. The [EFL] Cup game against West Brom will be coming up so I’ll just see where I go from there.”

Key departure: Ethan Pinnock (Brentford). Stendel has lost Pinnock, plus another centre-back, Liam Lindsay, as well as goalkeeper Adam Davies, the latter two to Stoke. They are difficult to replace.

Verdict: Daniel Stendel did brilliantly to guide them to automatic promotion last season, his first in charge, but it is set to be a long struggle to keep the Tykes in the division.

Verdict: Could be dark horses for the title. Frank had one win in his first ten games and it looked like they would be dragged into a relegation battle, but they finished with three successive wins and have already spent around £20million.

BRISTOL CITY

Prediction: 14th

City splashed out a club-record £8million on the centre-back from Chelsea after he spent last season at Ashton Gate.

Key departure: Lloyd Kelly (Bournemouth). The defender made a £13million move to the Cherries, with the Robins reinvesting in the likes of Kalas, and Daniel Bentley, the goalkeeper who joined from Brentford for £2million.

Verdict: Johnson had his side challenging for the play-offs for most of the season, and they were sixth before only one win in their last six games. Might just fall short again.

Pep Clote (caretaker) Title: 50/1 Relegation: 4/1 Key signing: Dan Crowley (Willem II). Highly rated at Arsenal, the attacking midfielder had a productive season in Holland prompting Blues to pay almost £1million for him.

Key departure: Che Adams (Southampton). The Saints paid £15million for the 23-year-old striker who scored 22 times in 48 games last season.

Verdict: There is still some uncertainty around Birmingham at the moment with Clote only in a caretaker role. Unlikely to trouble the play-off spots.

(Southampton). Rovers have splashed out £5million for the striker, and will hope he is on the end of crosses from another new man, the experienced Stewart Downing.

Key departure: David Raya (Brentford). Kept two clean sheets against the Lions last season and Brentford paid £3million for him this summer.

Verdict: Mowbray’s side comfortably stayed up in their first season back in the Championship, finishing with 60 points, and it’s crucial they keep Bradley Dack, who scored 15 league goals in 2018-19.

Manager: Lee Johnson Title: 18/1 Relegation: 10/1 Key signing: Tomas Kalas (Chelsea).

Prediction: 9th

CARDIFF

Neil Warnock 10/1 18/1 Will Vaulks (Rotherham). Cardiff have been very quiet in the transfer window so far, only paying one transfer fee, £2million for midfielder Vaulks from the Millers.

Key departure: Aron Gunnarsson (AlArabi, Qatar). The midfield stalwart played over 300 games for the Bluebirds between 2011 and 2019.

Verdict: Cardiff look like they will keep players such as Bobby Reid and Jacob Murphy, whom they spent a combined £20million on last summer, and have the bulk of the squad that got promoted to the Premier League in 2018. They look strong as Warnock goes for his ninth promotion.

CHARLTON ATHLETIC

Lee Bowyer 80/1 5/2 Tom Lockyer (Bristol Rovers). A free-transfer signing, the 24year-old centre-back could be a good bit of business.

Scored the 94th-minute winner in the play-off final against Sunderland and was a leader in the centre of defence.

Verdict: Bowyer is still a relative novice in management and probably got the Addicks promoted a lot sooner than expected. They will find life tough at this level.

DERBY COUNTY

Phillip Cocu 18/1 10/1 Kieran Dowell (Everton; loan). Derby made some excellent loan signings last season, and 21-year-old Dowell looks an exciting attacking midfielder.

Key departure: Bradley Johnson (Blackburn). County have replaced the experienced 32-year-old with Graham Shinnie from Aberdeen, though he was a Frank Lampard signing.

Verdict: An intriguing appointment in Cocu, who led PSV Eindhoven to three Eredivisie titles and got a taste of the football culture at Barcelona as a player.

Cocu has a vastly experienced squad at this level, though needs some more signings to energise an old-looking squad.

Manager: Title: Relegation: Key signing:

Prediction: 7th

FULHAM

Manager: Scott Parker Title: 7/1 Relegation: 25/1 Key signing: Ivan Cavaleiro (Wolves;

loan). A hugely talented winger who cost Wolves a then club-record £7million in 2016, he scored three goals in 23 appearance in the Premier League last season.

Key departure: Ryan Babel (Galatasaray). The striker made an unexpectedly big impact after joining the Cottagers from Besiktas last January, but it was too little too late and he was never likely to stick around.

Verdict: Fulham won three of their last five league games under Parker, after only four all season before that.

Promising, but similar to Darren Moore who impressed despite West Brom getting relegated the previous season, if Fulham aren’t up there challenging for automatic promotion, with their squad, the pressure will be on Parker.

Prediction: 2nd

MILLWALL

Title: 66/1 Relegation: 3/1 Manager: Neil Harris Key signing: Connor Mahoney (Bournemouth). The wide man has shown real quality in pre-season. He can run well with the ball, cross, and take set-pieces with either foot. Should provide good supply.

Key departure: Lee Gregory (Stoke). One of the reasons Harris was able to play one up top and vary his formation around it was because Gregory could do pretty much everything. Not sure Millwall have a striker like that now.

Verdict: The recruitment has been impressive and the players say it has freshened the place up and increased the tempo in training. Ireland under-21 international midfielder Jayson Molumby has huge potential and could become a key player. The Lions should be fine but it will be a push to repeat the eighth-place finish of two seasons ago.

Prediction: 15th

HUDDERSFIELD

Jan Siewert 16/1 11/1 Isaac Mbenza (Montpellier). The striker signed permanently this summer after a loan spell and has the physique to make an impact.

Key departure: Jonas Lössl (Everton).

The 30-year-old goalkeeper was one of the few positives for Huddersfield as they finished bottom of the Premier League.

Verdict: Huddersfield have lost 21 of their last 25 league games and that’s a difficult rot to stop. Striker Karlan Grant will be key.

Manager: Title: Relegation: Key signing:

Prediction: 11th

HULL CITY

Grant McCann 40/1 5/1 Tom Eaves (Gillingham). The 6ft 5ins striker is stepping up to the Championship after excelling in League One and there is a lot of pressure on him to produce the goods and provide the goals.

Key departure: Pontus Jansson (Brentford). It probably suited both parties for him to leave after a strained relationship with Bielsa.

Verdict: Leeds last season followed the pattern of many Bielsa teams when they start so well but then don’t see it through to the finish. If Bielsa stays the full season – not guaranteed given his career – then the players will be more used to his methods and they will be one of the strongest sides in the division.

The 33-year-old midfielder brings experience to the Madejski but isn’t the most mobile. He will have a setpiece threat, which the Royals will be relying on this season.

Key departure: Liam Kelly (Feyenoord). The midfielder was once hailed as a bright star for the future, and was always likely to move on to bigger and better things.

Verdict: Gomes did what he was brought in to do last season when he kept Reading in the division after being appointed last December. He will do well to have the Royals above a relegation battle this season.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

Neil Harris has overhauled his Millwall squad this season

50/1 4/1 Graeme Jones Ryan Tunnicliffe (Millwall). Plenty of Lions fans were surprised when he wasn’t offered a new deal. Tunnicliffe says he has a point to prove and his experience in midfield will be crucial.

Key departure: James Austin (Leicester). The Premier League side paid £6million for the full-back, which shows how highly he is rated. Luton also lost Jack Stacey to Bournemouth for £4million.

Verdict: Luton have made some decent signings, with Callum McManaman another one who will feel he has to prove the doubters wrong. Manager Jones is untested at any level, and that has to be a worry.

MIDDLESBROUGH

14/1 14/1 Jonathan Woodgate Robbie Keane. Appointed assistant coach alongside former Tottenham team-mate Woodgate and highly rated based on his time with Mick McCarthy’s Ireland.

Verdict: Another one that’s hard to predict. Woodgate is a novice and Keane is similarly inexperienced in his role.

22/1 9/1 Sabri Lamouchi Albert Adomah (Nottingham Forest). The winger helped Villa to promotion last season, starting in the 2-1 win over Derby in the play-off final, but was released.

Key departure: Ben Osborn (Sheffield United). The skilful left-sided player has joined the Premier League new boys.

Forest will miss his quality.

Verdict: Another manager in the Championship with no experience of it, but Daniel Farke of Norwich showed that’s no reason to write someone off.

Still. Lamouchi is coming into a club that hasn’t been that stable over the last few years, so it looks a difficult task.

PRESTON NORTH END

28/1 7/1 Alex Neil David Nugent (Derby).

The striker made an emotional return to Preston this summer. He’s 34 now, but still quality when he gets a chance in the box.

Key departure: Callum Robinson (Sheffield United). The forward scored 13 goals last season before joining the Blades this summer for around £8million.

Verdict: Preston beat Millwall twice last season but fell away to finish 14th. They haven’t exactly pulled up any trees in the transfer market, so it’s hard to see them launching a serious challenge for promotion.

QUEENS PARK RANGERS

50/1 7/2 Mark Warburton Jordan Hugill (West Ham, loan). The centre-forward has a lot of experience at this level, though probably didn’t get as many goals as he hoped at Middlesbrough last season.

22/1 8/1 Vacant Kadeem Harris (Cardiff). The winger will be expected to provide the crosses this season for the strikers.

Key departure: Steve Bruce (Newcastle). Bruce infuriated Wednesday fans by walking out on the club after just a few months to join Newcastle. It has thrown the club’s summer into chaos and at the time of writing they were without a manager.

Verdict: Every other club in the Championship has a manager who is finalising his team for the opening day. Wednesday are leaving it very late to appoint someone and that is a big mistake.

STOKE CITY

12/1 14/1 Nathan Jones Lee Gregory (Millwall).

Stoke have a strong squad and maybe Gregory isn’t a guaranteed starter. But the striker will give his new side a bit of everything, and has shown in the last few seasons what a difficult player he is to subdue. Will want to up his goal tally.

Key departure: Darren Fletcher (Free). The 35-year-old midfielder was a big presence around the club.

Verdict: Jones has made some impressive, and experienced, signings.

28/1 13/2 Steve Cooper Ben Wilmot (Watford, loan). A very promising centre-back, he should help shore up the Swans’ defence.

Key departure: Daniel James (Manchester United). The winger was a terrifying presence for opposition fullbacks last season with his surges forward going viral on the internet. There is no one they can really get to replace him.

Verdict: Cooper has shown what a good coach he is at underage level with Liverpool and England. He has never overseen a senior team, but there is huge expectation on Swansea.

WEST BROMWICH ALBION

Title: 10/1 Relegation: 22/1 Manager: Slaven Bilic Key signing: Romaine Sawyers

(Brentford). The Baggies have signed attacking midfielder Sawyers, who was captain at West Brom. It was a surprise the Bees let him go. Millwall know all about him after he scored the winner from range at Griffin Park two seasons ago.

Key departure: Jay Rodriguez (Burnley). West Brom have lost a few top players this season, including Rodriguez and centre-back Craig Dawson. But they’re recruited well.

Verdict: Bilic is a good manager and he has a very decent squad to work with, despite the losses of some experienced players. West Brom should be challenging for a top-six place.

Prediction: 4th

WIGAN ATHLETIC

50/1 7/2 Paul Cook Lewis MacLeod (Brentford). Wigan haven’t done a whole lot in the transfer market, and they still want Jamal Lowe, whom Millwall bid for earlier in the summer.

Macleod looks a decent midfield recruit.

Key departure: Nick Powell (Stoke).

Wigan couldn’t prevent forward Powell leaving, as he eyes a promotion push with Stoke.

Verdict: It’s hard not to see Wigan struggling. Like Millwall they impressed in their first season back in the Championship, but the second season is usually more difficult. They will likely be battling relegation.

JASON MCCARTHY is targeting a first-team place at Millwall – and he has a secret weapon that could help him.

McCarthy, 23, joined the Lions this week on a long-term deal for an undisclosed fee from League One Wycombe.

He is primarily a right-back but has played left-back and in the centre of defence.

And in the last year he has added another string to his bow. In the 54th minute of Wycombe’s third-last game of last season against Walsall, with the side just outside the relegation zone, McCarthy stood over a free-kick just outside the box. What followed was described as “sublime” in one report, as McCarthy curled home an effort to give Wycombe a 1-0 win and move them four points clear of the bottom four.

McCarthy told the News this week how it came about the he ended up developing that expertise.

“It’s kind of a new thing for me, it started last year,” he said. “In my time at Barnsley, in the last six months I was out of the side and really struggling to get game time.

Through boredom, really, I started practising set-pieces and found myself getting quite good at it.

“Then in my time at Wycombe I got on them towards the back end of last season.

My ratio is pretty good so I’m hoping to bring that to Millwall. I know it’s such a big part of the way they play here.

“It was a big goal and probably the most important in terms of goals I’ve scored in my career. That was a good moment.”

McCarthy revealed Millwall tried to sign him previously, before renewing their interest earlier this summer. And he said there was only one choice when such an “iconic club” came calling.

“I knew of interest of Millwall a couple of years ago but it fizzled out. I was at Walsall but it didn’t happen for one reason or another,” he explained. “Then I knew at the start of this window that they were back in for me.

“I really only had one thought in my mind then, I wanted to come. I’m delighted it’s finally done. It’s a big club, an iconic club.

The first thing you think about is the fans and how passionate they are. I’ve played at The Den a few times as an opposition player, so to have that behind me now I’m going to use that to my advantage and I think the team should has well. I’m looking forward to experiencing it.

“It’s very intimidating, it’s not a nice place to come and we have to make it a fortress this season. We have to make it a place where teams are not looking forward to

coming. I don’t think we should be fearing anyone.”

McCarthy has considerable experience in professional football despite his young age, and he hopes to get up towards the 200game mark as he challenges Mahlon Romeo for the right-back spot.

“I’ve played 165 games, I don’t think there are many other 23-year-olds who have played the number of games,” McCarthy added. “I’ve got a lot of experience under my belt and I want to keep adding to that. I want to play games and hopefully by the end of this season I’ll be touching 200 and using my experience to help the side.

“It’s all about the team first and foremost, I want the team to do well and my targets come second to that. Of course I want to be playing, I haven’t come here to be bit-part. I want to bring a lot to the team and I believe I can.

“When the gaffer needs me or wants me to play I’ll do a job for him.

“It’s been quite a chaotic couple of days but it’s all finally done and the medical went well, it’s been quite long-winded but I’m glad it’s completed and I’m a Millwall player now.

“I’ve had a full pre-season at Wycombe and played quite a lot of minutes. I’ll be straight into it here and there will be no excuses from my point of view in terms of fitness.”

GEORGE ALEXANDER wants to make the name on the back of his shirt his own - as he follows dad Gary at Millwall.

The eighteen-year-old became the first player born after the year 2000 to feature for Millwall in a senior professional game when he replaced Lee Gregory in the 67th minute on the final day of the season at Wigan Athletic.

Speaking to the News last weekend, the striker recalled how he felt playing for the same club as his father when Neil Harris sent him on.

“The gaffer gave me a chance alongside Bill [Billy Mitchell], obviously I have been here since I was six, which is twelve years now so it has been my entire life. It was unreal to make my debut there, especially in front of the Millwall fans,” Alexander said.

Alexander has shown in the under23s that he possesses a killer instinct for the back of the net as he notched 20 goals last season, and the youngster explained how being surrounded by former strikers has taught him a lot.

“The gaffer [Harris] is a striker, Nudge [Kevin Nugent, under-23 boss] is a striker, my dad was a striker so growing up I have always found things to take off people, they are always giving me tips,” he said.

“Working with Nudge is great because he tells me what to do and when to do it, and how to do it. It is making me better as a player.”

The striker’s prolific form on the pitch last season was also matched in the classroom as after completing his GCSE’s at Welling School, George continued his studies at Orpington College where he completed a BTEC Subsidiary Diploma, a National Vocational Qualification and furthered his skills in both Maths and English.

Alexander explained: “I did not expect to be in it, but obviously you have to do well with college to be picked. I struggled in my first year, but in the end I did quite well. Then obviously playing 23s from Christmas onwards gave me a boost. Being awarded that was just a bonus at the end of the year along with my debut.”

PAUL ROBINSON believes Millwall have “come on a lot” since he left five years ago and stressed how much he is looking forward to working with a talented group of youngsters.

“He is always giving me good help, but so has my mum. It is a joint effort from both of them. I have got a lot of support from both my mum and dad which has helped a lot.

“I want to get out there and play men’s football. I haven’t really done it, I had the taster on my debut and being involved in first-team training.

But if I had the opportunity to go play men’s football I would be happy to go wherever I have to go [on loan] to do that and then come back.”

Robinson left his role as a defensive coach under former Millwall manager Kenny Jackett at Portsmouth to take up the position of assistant manager of the Lions’ under 23s.

The defender had a fourteen-year spell at Millwall, where he made over 300 appearances for the club and scored the all-important goal against Swindon in the 2010 League one play-off final.

“It’s great to be back,” Robinson said after a Millwall XI beat Welling United 1-0 in a pre-season friendly last week.

“It feels a bit strange being a new boy in a place that I’m so familiar with, but it is brilliant to be back and I’m delighted with the opportunity.

“I’m coming back to people I know, people I really respect and also have got good friendships with as well, so I think that helps you work hard and work hard for each other.”

Senior boss Neil Harris said this summer that the club have the most exciting group of under-23s in three years.

Robinson added: “We have a really good bunch. I’m really looking forward to teaching them, there are a few centrehalves in that group which is good for me, ideal for me, really. There is a lot of talent there, so it’s going to be great to work with them this season and great to try and teach them the Millwall way but also help them improve in their own performance.

“It’s a massive learning curve [for me]. It’s totally different to playing and I’m fully aware of that, but it is something I’m relishing.”

The former captain left Millwall in 2014 to join Portsmouth on loan before he made the move permanent the following season. He went on to win another promotion, this time from League Two, with AFC Wimbledon in 2016.

He has noted the changes at Millwall since his return.

“The club has come on a lot, really,” Robinson said. “You can just see the set-up, the training ground and how the infrastructure of the club has developed. You can see the things they are trying to do, it was a summer of transition on the pitch but everything else is geared up and ready to go for the new season.

“The building hasn’t changed loads, but there are tweaks that have been made and the pitches look fantastic.

The whole set-up is very good, very professional and it’s great to be a part of it.”

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris said Jason McCarthy will provide competition across the defence but primarily challenge Mahlon Romeo for the rightback shirt.

McCarthy moved to the Lions after one season with Wycombe who he helped avoid relegation to League Two last season.

He joined the Chairboys from Barnsley and featured for the Tykes in the Championship. McCarthy played in Barnsley’s 3-1 league win at The Den in September 2017, when current Lions striker Tom Bradshaw scored a double for Paul Heckingbottom’s visitors.

The defender came through the youth system at Southampton. He made one senior appearance, as an 87th-minute substitute in a 3-1 Premier League win at Crystal Palace in December 2014 under then-Saints boss Ronald Koeman.

McCarthy moved on loan to Wycombe the following season and was in their side as they defeated the Lions 2-1 in the second round of the FA Cup that season. In fact his record against his current side is decent. He went on loan to Walsall and faced Millwall twice in League One in 2016-17, winning one game and drawing the other.

Mahon Romeo is very talented and has been fantastic for us but he needs competition, someone to come in and be able to take that position away from him,” Harris said.

“Jason has got huge experience for a young man, he’s played a lot of games. He has some Championship experience. He played very well against us in the past for Walsall, Wycombe and Barnsley.

“Me and Livers [assistant manager Dave Livermore] have been fortunate enough to see him a lot on our travels watching games, predominantly as a right-back, but we’ve seen him play left-back and as a centre-half. We’ve seen him play very well on the right side of a three-man defence with a full-back-stroke-winger outside him.

“He gives us variety and he comes with great references as being a really good character. He’s certainly hungry to want to play and do well.

He knows he’s got a lot to learn and he’s fully aware of the step-up between League One and the Championship, because he’s done it before.

“And then he stepped back down because he wanted to play games.

I’m really pleased to get him in. It’s been long drawn out as have a lot over the summer.

“He comes in and it’s a good week to come in leading up to the first game.”

NEIL HARRIS hopes his incoming transfer business this summer is concluded and ahead of the clash with Preston this Saturday he said: “We’re ready.”

Millwall confirmed a permanent deal for defender Jason McCarthy from Wycombe and a season-long loan for Ipswich goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski on Tuesday.

It means Harris has got the targets he wanted and followed through with his promise to revamp his squad.

Including Tyler Burey, who will start the season with the under-23s, Millwall have made nine signings in this transfer window.

Tom Elliott’s proposed season-long loan to the Tractor Boys didn’t go

through on Tuesday as Ipswich flagged an issue with his medical. He could still leave, and Harris could yet decide to bring in another attacker.

The transfer window closes earlier this year, on August 8, but players can still go out on loan to League One and below until September 2.

Harris believes this is the best preseason Millwall have had in his time in charge. The Lions face a Preston side who did the double over them last

season this weekend.

“Alex Neil has got good experience of the Championship, but we’re ready for it, we’re ready,” Harris said. “The players know their roles and responsibilities, they know what’s expected with and without the ball and they’re excited to get going, they’re chomping at the bit.

“I’m a lot more settled in my mind now what team I want to play. Some individuals have been fantastic in preseason, players that were out of form last year and out of the picture have really staked a claim.

JAMES MEREDITH has left Millwall after having his contract terminated.

Meredith, 31, hasn’t been at the club all summer and wasn’t given a squad number for the 2019-20 season.

Millwall signed Meredith from Bradford on a free transfer in the summer of 2017 ahead of the club’s return to the Championship.

He was in the Bradford side that Millwall defeated 1-0 in the League One play-off final before making the switch to London.

The former Derby left-back made his competitive debut in the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on the opening day of the 2017-18 season. He started every league game as Millwall finished eighth, just three points off the play-offs.

Meredith went to the World Cup with Australia last summer, though he didn’t make an appearance, and returned still as the Lions’ first-choice left-back.

He lost his place to Murray Wallace in the side, but returned when the Scottish defender suffered a season-ending injury.

His last appearance was in the 1-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic on the final day of last season.

Meredith is now free to find a new club.
