TRADERS AT Elephant and Castle will have their rent halved after a judicial review into the shopping centre’s regeneration was delayed until October, leaving them in limbo over the planned demolition.

Up the Elephant campaigners plan to hold a protest before the case is heard at the Royal Courts of Justice at the Strand in October 22 and 23, after the planned hearing in mid-July was adjourned.

Further delays mean more uncertainty for traders, but campaigners have blasted claims they are at fault, telling developer

and shopping centre landlord, Delancey, that had its planning application been up to scratch to begin with, the legal fight would never have dragged on for so long.

Key contentions are the retail space offered in the new plans, and the number of social homes within the wider scheme.

On Monday, a spokesperson for Delancey announced traders would now have their rent halved – and this would be backdated to the beginning of June.

By the beginning of November their rent will be further reduced; by 80 per cent in total.

The spokesperson said: “We are disappointed the judicial review hearing has been delayed and are conscious this prolongs the process

when we want to move forward and give traders the certainty they need to plan for the future.

“As we review our position and as part of our ongoing support to these businesses, we have already dropped the rent by 30 per cent.

“We can confirm today that considering these circumstances, a further discount will be given meaning independent traders will benefit from a 50 per cent rent reduction backdated to June 01.

“We can also confirm that from November 01, 2019, we will be dropping the rent further to an 80 per cent rent reduction.”

“We remain very much committed to creating a thriving town centre in Elephant and Castle.”

Guy’s and St Thomas rated as good by health watchdog

GUY’S AND St Thomas’ Trust has been rated ‘Good’ overall by the care watchdog.

Inspectors rated the trust as ‘outstanding’ in the caring and well-led category, but also gave it a ‘requires improvement’ in the ‘being safe’ category.

The Care Quality Commission’s inspectors reviewed adult community services at the Trust during its April and May visit, finding them to be outstanding.

Amanda Pritchard, Chief Executive at the Trust said she was “particularly pleased” that adult community services had been rated outstanding.

She added: “I am delighted that the Care Quality Commission’s report highlights so much of what makes Guy’s and St Thomas’ such a caring and compassionate

organisation.

“It highlights why staff across the Trust are so proud to work here, as well as their dedication to providing the best possible care for our patients.

“The areas for improvement in the report are things that we are aware of and are working hard to address.”

Among those areas of improvement noted by the watchdog were performance against national access and treatment standards and numbers of staff completing their mandatory training and having an appraisal.

England’s Chief Inspector of Hospital’s, Professor Ted Baker, said: “There is a good standard of care at Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust - we rated it Outstanding for being caring and well-led.

“The only area that didn’t get at least a Good rating was in the safe category, but I expect with the leadership the trust now has that this area will improve in the future.”

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

Politicians in Southwark unite against hate crime

COUNCILLORS ACROSS Southwark’s political divide have taken a stand against hate by passing a diversity and equality motion at council assembly.

The unanimously backed crossparty motion on Wednesday, July 17 condemned discrimination such as islamophobia and antisemitism and called on the Government to adopt more resources into tackling hate crimes.

The motion also saw council assembly agree to adopt the allparliamentary group’s working definition of islamophobia.

Hate crimes have risen in Southwark and London generally, with 788 such incidents in the borough last year.

Cllr Humaira Ali, the Liberal Democrat councillor who proposed the motion, said: “Nationally our politicians and media have been guilty of creating an enemy where there is none for their own gains.

“Whether it’s pandering to a minority by telling immigrants to go home via messaging on the side of vans or declaring that it’s terrorism if a brown person pulled the trigger but a mental health issue if it’s a white person.

“We Southwark Councillors can give leadership where it has sorely been lacking nationally, and let that leadership ripple out from Southwark.”

Councillors heard from a deputation of residents from minority backgrounds detailing the racist, homophobic and misogynist abuse they had received.

Labour’s Cllr Alice Macdonald seconded the motion, saying diversity and equality should be inherent in society.

“But the sad fact is that, in the current political climate and with hate crimes on the rise we all need to reiterate our commitment to these values and most importantly take action,” she said..

FUNDRAISER FOR FORMER ROTHERHITHE PUBLICANS

A FUNDRAISING event has been organised to pay for the legal bills of the former landlords of the China Hall Pub in Rotherhithe, after they were embroiled in a bitter battle to save their boozer and home.

Mick and Linda Norris had run the pub on Lower Road for over 35 years – but when the freehold was sold to the offshore developer, Hamna Wakaf Ltd, faced a costly legal battle to stay.

They were hit with the prospect of being homeless on Christmas Eve after

being told to leave, before managing to secure an extension and alternative accommodation in January.

But now Mick and Linda have been left with bills of £22,000 from their legal fight – which they are unable to afford.

An event has been organised with the help of former long-time MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Sir Simon Hughes, who also led the campaign to save the China Hall, which he hopes will raise a five-figure contribution to paying off the bills.

It takes place at the Old Bank pub on Southwark Park Road on Friday, August 2 from 7.30pm.

“It was Simon Hughes’ idea, he suggested it because of our legal bills,” said Linda. “If they had played fairly, we wouldn’t have to do this. But it’s nice, I know a lot of people are behind us.”

Originally, the couple had hoped that a pay-off which they would have been entitled to upon leaving the pub would pay the costs of the legal battle.

But they were allegedly told that if they applied for it, they would also have to pay Hamna Wakaf’s court costs too – leaving them with no money left over.

The News has not been able to find contact details for Hamna Wakaf Ltd for comment.

“Micky and Linda Norris and family served our community and many from far and wide for over 35 years,” said Sir Simon.

“The Norrises were very popular landlords of a very famous local pub.

And they were driven out by a hardnosed property developer from the Isle of Man. “Now they have received the bill for their legal fight to keep the pub and keep their home.

“I hope the Bermondsey and wider community can now rally round, show our generosity and help out Micky and Linda and family in their hour of need.

“Please join us to say thank you - and help them out -on 2nd August at The Old Bank in the Blue in Bermondsey from 7.30pm. The family will be really grateful.”

A bid by the developer to expand the historic pub – which has ‘asset of community value’ status to include four flats – was rejected by council planning officers last month because of its “poor design” and “inappropriate materials.”

“They said they had so much money to do the pub up, but that pub has not been touched since we left,” added Linda. “It’s basically an empty shell.”

Mass evacuation in Walworth after a gas leak

THE MOTHER of a missing nineteen-year-old art student from Canada Water has pleaded for News readers to help find her son after he disappeared over a week ago, taking just his keys.

Forty-four-year-old nurse Grace Carlos has been devastated since her only child Aldrin, vanished from their home on Plover Way. Grace last saw him on the night of Sunday, July 14, when she wished him goodnight and went to bed at around 10pm.

The following day, she realised he had left the house without his phone and wallet and without leaving a message.

Initially thinking he must have gone for a walk or run, Grace became increasingly panicked as the hours went by with no sign of him or news from his friends.

On Tuesday, she filed a missing person report with police, but so far there have been no reported sightings or leads.

Aldrin, a Fine Art student at City and Guilds London Art School in Kennington, who has been living at home with Grace while studying, has never gone missing before.

Grace said: “There was no indication before he went missing, he was completely normal.

“I feel so helpless, I have already circulated posters around the local area and contacted his college, friends and martial arts classes.

“Although I have people praying, I need more than prayers.

“I need action, and help to get more leaflets out. I’m so worried.”

Zero emissions ferry proposed instead of Rotherhithe Bridge

A UK first zero-emissions ferry option has been proposed for the Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf crossing after TfL shelved the planned bridge over escalating cost.

The proposal from Thames Clippers, which currently runs the ferry service between Canary Wharf pier and Doubletree Docklands hotel in Rotherhithe, would see three boats running concurrently said the firm.

The idea would meet demand predictions, Thames Clippers has also said, offering a 2,250 capacity per hour in each direction.

However exact details of the transport solution for the river crossing has not yet been confirmed by TfL or the Mayor.

A backlash was sparked after TfL decided to cancel the Rotherhithe Bridge last month, saying it was “currently unaffordable.”

Council leader Peter John called on the decision to be reconsidered, as did Rotherhithe’s three Labour ward councillors.

But the opposition Liberal Democrat transport spokesman Cllr Damian O’Brien slammed it as “Labour’s Garden Bridge fiasco”, arguing it showed the party could not be trusted on transport in Southwark.

The authorities were called to reports of the attack shortly at around 3.15pm, and found a man in his twenties suffering from a slash wound to his leg.

He was rushed to hospital by paramedics, where he remained as the News went to press.

His injury was not thought to be lifethreatening or life-changing.

The suspected attacker is believed to have fled the scene by motorbike, said police.

“The suspect made homophobic comments and, for this reason, the incident is being treated as a hate crime”, a Scotland Yard spokeswoman told the paper.

No arrests had yet been been made on Wednesday, and police enquiries were continuing.

First discovered at around 10am that morning, coming from a man hole on Manor Place, the area was finally made safe around twelve hours later at 10pm, when the cordon came down and the first residents were let back into their homes after safety checks.

During the emergency engineering work, The Castle Centre opened its doors to evacuated residents who grew increasingly concerned they may have to find beds for the night elsewhere.

Although gas company SGN, and Southwark Council, regularly updated their twitter followers; details on expected timings and whether the response was going to carry on into the night were scant.

Throughout the day, road closures were put in place and trains cancelled through Elephant and Castle.

Businesses and other organisations were also affected, including Walworth Police Station - which had to close its front counter and open up Peckham Police Station instead so crimes could still be reported in the borough.

JOHN BOYEGA was spotted filming in Burgess Park and Rye Lane yesterday as fans went wild to see the Peckham-born A-lister on home turf.

To the delight of onlookers, the Star Wars actor was filmed riding a white horse past the Aylesbury Estate, while BMX riders put on some elaborate stunts on the track. Although the exact nature of the recording is under wraps, wordof-mouth quickly spread and dozens of residents turned out to show their support.

In between takes, the former Oliver Goldsmith Primary pupil who grew up in North Peckham Estate took the time to talk to starstruck fans, with one writing: “@JohnBoyega as nice in real person as he portrays himself on screen.

ARCHITECTS HAVE been appointed for a £2.3million revamp of Bermondsey’s historic town centre, the Blue.

Bermondsey-based architects firm Hayatsu have been appointed to lead on the overhaul, alongside Turner-prize winning artists’ collective, Assemble.

The redevelopment of the area, supported by a grant from a Mayoral fund, aims to “turn Bermondsey’s historic town centre and street market into a thriving area, building on The Blue’s identity as the ‘Larder of London.’”

Hayatsu’s appointment marks the start of the regeneration work, which will continue until March 2021. The project is being spear-headed by the Blue BID, a network of local businesses.

“Winning this £2m funding is a fantastic achievement after years of hard work by everyone at the Blue,” said Russell Dryden who is on the BID’s board, and also runs a stall at the marketplace.

“I’m really excited to see how the architects will work with local people to develop ideas to best use this funding to benefit our high street and wider community.”

Ideas mooted for the redevelopment include highlighting the Blue’s rich history as the site of London’s first rail terminus and home of the world’s first tin can, as well as a physical makeover of the marketplace and shopfronts.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, who holds the business portfolio for Southwark Council, praised the dedication of local residents in getting the funding to redevelop the marketplace.

“Our local high streets, town centres and markets are the life’s blood of the borough and at Southwark we want to help all our local businesses thrive,” she said.

FIVE HUNDRED young people from working class backgrounds will be helped to get paid internships with a new Southwark Council scheme.

“We’ve achieved record employment levels in Southwark over the last few years. However those from less advantaged backgrounds remain more likely to be out of work – or to be in a

job with lower pay and prospects than their peers from better off backgrounds.

FUNDRAISER IF ROY FAILS IN HIS APPEAL FOR COMPO EXCLUSIVE

A FUNDRAISER has been set up for Roy Larner, dubbed the Lion of London Bridge, after he was allegedly denied Government compensation for his injuries.

Last week Roy told media outlets including the News he had been denied compensation from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, because of his unspent convictions. He is appealing the decision.

The Millwall fan was stabbed repeatedly in the arm, neck and chest when he tackled terrorists during the London Bridge attacks, screaming ‘F*** you I’m Millwall.”

He says if he gets compensation the money will go to charity Now friends have rallied around him with a fundraiser, in case his appeal for compensation is not successful, with the money being donated to a charity if it is.

The appeal, which has raised over £1,000, was set up by Roy’s friend, Jayne Jacob, who praised him as ‘courageous’ and ‘funny’.

She told the News: “I visited Roy in hospital the day after he was attacked and the injuries alone he received, not including how it affected him mentally, convinced me we should be grateful and supporting him and this is why I am proud to call him my friend and try and raise some money for him.

“I’ve heard many people being very derogatory about him and what they

think they know about him. However I have not heard anyone say he does not deserve compensation for his bravery.”

“I feel so appreciative,” added Roy. “People have been putting loads of messages of support for me as well.

“If we get the compensation, then I’ll donate it all to charity.”

A previous fundraiser also set up by Ms Jacob for the London Bridge hero immediately following the June 2017 attack, had raised around £50,000.

The money went on rent, he said, as he did not have any other means to pay for accommodation.

“I went a bit backwards, people didn’t want to put me up,” explained Roy, who is currently sofa-surfing while he seeks

housing help from the authorities.

He has previously told the News of his mental health struggles, having been diagnosed with anxiety and PTSD following the June 2017 atrocity.

Earlier this month Roy also revealed how he had been attending Government anti-terror classes over far-right radicalisation fears – which he thought had been compulsory.

However a Home Office spokesperson told the paper that while it could not comment on Roy personally, the Prevent scheme was voluntary.

A NEW host of rising athletes from Southwark have been chosen by Everyone Active to benefit from free gym passes and funding toward the cost of training and competing in their fields.

Now in its fourth year, sports stars selected to join the local Sporting

Champions scheme include Frank Agyemang, a blue belt-level Bronze medal winner at the British Nationals in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; Daniel McGlade, a fencer won a gold medal at the U20 Commonwealth Games; national and international tennis player Jotham TongeBobia; and 400-metre sprinter Susan Banjo, whom has won medals at both county and national level.

Olympic and Paralympic athletes to

receive support include para-triathlete racer Jade Jones, gold medal-winning gymnast Max Whitlock, and Team GB hockey captain Alex Danson.

Everyone Active’s Regional contract manager, Mark Basker, said: “We are delighted to be able to support these local sports stars on their journey to success.

“As a leisure provider working in partnership with the council, we feel it is important to cater for all sectors of the

A ‘DISTRESSED’ baby swan which got its leg tangled in fishing wire at Surrey Quays was rescued by firefighters on Friday morning.

SWAN RESCUE

A volunteer from the swan sanctuary called the brigade to help untangle the trapped animal – who would not have lasted long without their efforts.

Firefighters used a water rescue boat to reach the ‘distressed’ cygnet before handing it over to swan sanctuary volunteer, Ann Aikten-Davies.

She said the swan, which was only born in May, will sadly not be able to return to its parents, as they will reject it – but it will be cared for at the Swan Sanctuary until it is well and old enough.

“We don’t know how long the swan had been there, but I got called this morning and I think it must have been there longer as its leg was very badly swollen – almost double the size of the other leg,” said Ms AitkenDavies on Friday.

“It wouldn’t have lasted long as it was getting very distressed and kept going under the water.

“I phoned the RSPCA initially as I knew it needed a boat, but they weren’t able to help and

advised me to phone the fire brigade.

“Because of how bad the leg was, we couldn’t just put it back in the water. It will come back to the sanctuary for a course of antibiotics and then we will release it along with all the other cygnets we have later this year.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to the firefighters – they were absolutely brilliant.”

Ian Barritt, who managed the fire brigade crew at the scene, said that calling the RSPCA is the best thing to do first, but that the fire brigade is happy to attend if specialist equipment is needed.

“Ann did the right thing by phoning the RSPCA first, as we would always advise people to do if they see an animal in distress. If they need our specialist equipment we are happy to attend, as in this case.

“It was very deep water someone couldn’t have waded out to reach it and we wouldn’t have wanted anyone to try.”

The cygnet’s mum was also there and was quite ‘stressed’, he added, so firefighters put their boat between mum and baby so she kept her distance and the crew were able to release the wire trapping the baby swan.

The swan was rescued by 10.20am, and is now in the care of the sanctuary.

ALGERIAN FOOTBALL fans put on a joyous display at Old Kent Road last night after the team triumphed in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

A strike by Bounedjah led the Fennec Foxes to a one-nil victory over Senegal, and their first Afcon title since 1990.

Old Kent Road, which has one of London's largest Algerian communities, was brought to a standstill as excited fans launched fireworks, played music and danced in the street.

On Twitter, George Morey wrote: “Sitting in my mum’s, 30 seconds from the Old Kent Road and can hear a massive fireworks display which can only mean one thing…

Algeria have won the African nations.”

A MEMORIAL service for a much-loved homeless woman from Forest Hill was held on Saturday after £8,000 was raised by mourners, but the question of a permanent memorial has left residents divided.

Stefania, who struggled with drug addiction and was regularly seen sitting in an underpass near the station, died in hospital after an operation, leaving her local community bereft.

Stefania was known for her friendly personality and willingness to help older people and those carrying suitcases and buggies up and down the stairs.

Flowers and tributes have been placed in the underpass where she was often camped out, and nearly £8,000 was raised for her cremation and a memorial service, held on Saturday at Sydenham School, including paying for her family from Italy to attend.

But the question of a more permanent memorial has sparked debate between those who want to mark the place she often called home with a mural in the underpass, and others who believe the best legacy for Stefania would be to channel funds into charities to help people into rehab and permanent housing.

On the SE23 online forum, opinion was mixed. Poster BigAl said a mural would “be a testament to the kindness she inspired, and the kindness of strangers, which is what London is all about,” but the idea was described as ‘inappropriate’ and ‘misplaced grief’ by others.

LONDON BRIDGE station has been shortlisted for the prestigious Riba Stirling prize for architecture following its £1billion revamp.

The station is in the running to be named the UK’s best new building by the Royal Institute of British Architects after making the prize shortlist alongside a rural opera house and a building made of cork.

The prize result is due to be announced in October, and is widely seen one of top accolades in architecture.

The judges said the station’s building “significantly improves the experience of those who use it daily.”

The station is London’s fourth-busiest, handling over 50million customers a year, and was one of the oldest in the world.

Particularly singled out for praise was the station’s concourse, which RIBA judges labelled “truly impressive.”

THE ARTIST of an Only Fools and Horses mural which was mysteriously painted over only a day after it was finished has spoken of his shock at the discovery.

Gustavo Nénão was not commissioned to make the impressive 1,700sq foot homage to Del Boy, Rodney and Uncle Albert in Burgess Park, but said “it came from the heart to bring smiles to people’s faces.”

The artwork was finished on July 13, attracting many admirers locally and online – but only one day later, three men who have not been identified were spotted painted over it.

“Sadly it was covered in black one day after it was finished, I don’t know by whom, but I’m sure it wasn’t the council as I had contact with the park management and council to get authorization for the artwork,” said Mr Nénão.

“The locals cannot believe it was painted in black.

“They must be just like me when I came back to see the art and it was gone!

I got a shock!”

Teenagers had been planning on making a music video in front of the mural, and Mr Nénão told the News he had been inundated with responses from the community about what should go on the other side of the artwork.

“It would become such an amazing neighbourhood personalized piece of art,” he said.

“Unfortunately it didn’t last very long. I have no idea who and why they would

Adelina Shima, a pupil at Boutcher Primary, wrote to Humaira Ali, a Liberal Democrat councillor for London Bridge and West Bermondsey, about the impact of London’s filthy air on her and her classmates.

She penned: “Due to toxic air, children in London are growing up with smaller lungs and more asthma.

“However there is something that could help – ‘green screens’ – which are fences of ivy and/or bamboo that have been shown to block a third of nitrogen dioxide and 40 per cent of particulate material pollution.”

Adelina and her classmates have been fundraising for a green screen at their school, but had not yet raised all the cash needed to get the screen in place.

Cllr Ali tweeted: “I received a beautiful letter today from Adelina in Year Five at Boutcher.

“She’s fighting air pollution by fundraising for green screens. She’s fallen short of her target and needs all of our help.

“Adelina, I’ll be happy to meet you and your teachers.”

True to her word, Cllr Ali visited the

school on July 25, and met with Adelina to hear more about their worries about high levels of pollution currently in the playground, levels which are above the limit set by the World Health Organisation.

During the visit, Cllr Ali told students more about how democracy works at the council, and what Southwark’s local authority is doing to tackle pollution with its limited resources; and how pupils can all play a part.

One initiative from the school is the sale of its new Boutcher tote bags, made at the school’s community art day.

All funds from sales will be put towards installing a rainwater irrigation system to keep the green screen watered.

The school is currently tantalisingly close to reaching its goal – with just £139 left to find. In total, the new green screen will cost £3,750.

Green screens have been placed in other schools on busy roads across Southwark, including Goose Green Primary which found air pollution recorded inside its playground halved after the barrier was put up.

THE CONTROLLING and abusive ex of Brandon Estate mum Charlotte Huggins was put behind bars for at least twenty years after a trial at the Old Bailey concluded last week.

Thirty-four-year-old Michael Rolle was found guilty of stabbing his girlfriend on New Year’s Day of this year by a jury that dismissed his claims mother-of-one Charlotte died after stabbing herself by accident and branded a ‘suicide note’ a fake Rolle himself had written.

He was given a life sentence and told by the judge he will serve a minimum of 20 years before he could be considered for release on Friday, July 19.

The court heard how Rolle visited Charlotte’s home in the early hours of January 1 and, upon finding her celebrating with a male friend, became so aggressive her friend left.

When he returned shortly after to collect some forgotten belongings, he found Charlotte shouting that Rolle had stabbed her.

All the time, her daughter and aunt were sleeping upstairs.

In the dock, Rolle claimed Charlotte held the knife behind her back to stop him from getting it before falling on it, impaling herself below her right shoulder.

He said she pulled it out herself, which explained why the weapon was found lying on the ground.

But the jury dismissed this version of events.

In actual fact, Rolle had calmly thrown the weapon down and cycled away without giving his dying partner first aid or even calling an ambulance.

The court heard jealous Rolle had a history of trying to isolate Charlotte from her friends and was seen threatening her with a knife days before her death, holding it to her stomach on her birthday and throwing a butcher’s knife across a room – narrowly missing a male friend.

Rolle was arrested two days later, on January 3, when he attempted to evade officers by climbing out of a window.

Her blood was later found on his trainers, jeans, jacket and the handlebar of his bicycle, which he used to make a getaway from the scene.

Catherine Gould, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “This was a shocking display of violence borne out of jealousy and which resulted in a tragic murder that has deprived a little girl of her mother.

“This was no freak accident as Rolle claimed. It was a deliberate act and the jury has seen through his lies.

“We hope this result gives a sense of justice for those who cared for Charlotte who was much-loved throughout her community.”

Her thoughts were echoed by the lead investigator on the case, Detective Inspector Domenica Catino, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, who described how an unrepentant Rolle ‘blamed everyone but himself’: “Throughout the trial Michael Rolle took no responsibility for his actions and portrayed himself to be the victim,” she said.

It was an excellent team effort all working together to get justice for Charlotte.”

Burgess Park alleged kidnapper in court THE MAN accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting an eightyear-old boy in Burgess Park last month has appeared in court.

Shane Upton, 24, of no fixed address, appeared at Inner London Crown Court last week.

He has now been remanded in custody at HMP High Down and will enter a plea at the same court on September 16.

Upton was charged by police after a child was reported missing from the area at 5.20pm in the evening of June 17.

He is charged with one count of committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence and two counts of assault on an emergency worker.

If he pleads not guilty, the case is expected to go to trial in December.

"We treated a man at the scene and took him to a major trauma centre."

Police are now appealing for witnesses, especially those with dash cam footage, to come forward. Anyone with information should call 101.

A DECISION on the future of Burgess Business Park could have huge ramifications on highrise, car-free regeneration schemes across Southwark and the borough’s last remaining industrial sites.

Southwark Council’s planning committee rejected developer Peachtree’s application for the new ‘Camberwell Union’ neighbourhood on the site of Burgess Business Park in November 2018, in line with widespread opposition by residents.

The scheme in its current form includes 499 homes across thirteen blocks of up to 12 storeys high.

The developer has now appealed, and an inquiry into the decision will be held by the Planning Inspectorate in late August.

Unusually, local groups have been invited to give evidence, including testimonies that go beyond the council’s own rationale for refusing the scheme.

Jonathan Welch, from Southwark Law Centre, says the eventual decision could be a watershed moment for regeneration in the borough.

It is hoped if the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government rules in the campaigners’ favour, this could set a precedent and help save threatened industrial land under keep housing low-rise and, and make sure communities are ‘liveable’.

without adequate transport links and community services that would see more than a thousand new residents.

The area is already lacking enough GP surgeries and other amenities within walking distance, and is served by two very busy bus routes (136 and 343) and no overground.

A coalition of groups opposing the scheme in its current form are crowdfunding to pay for a barrister to represent them at the hearing, with more than £5,000 pledged already.

Many residents welcome development – and new housing – but are worried about how the numbers will work, especially in car-free

developments similar to the Canada Water masterplan.

“The Bakerloo line extension is not relevant in this area, and transport links haven’t improved,” says Welch.

“Car-free developments can’t be built at such a high density here – the roads aren’t wide enough for more bus routes.”

Although the developer did revise some aspects of the plans, including reducing the height of one building from 14 to 12 storeys, this hasn’t reduced the overall number of homes.

Boris get behind the Domestic Abuse Bill - and properly fund it!

T WO WOMEN a week are killed by their current or former partner in the UK. And domestic abuse affects two million people - mostly women every year.

Over the years I’ve been MP I’ve supported women and children in Camberwell and Peckham who’ve suffered this terrible violence. I’ve heard their devastating stories and made their voices heard in Parliament.

Women suffering domestic abuse need to know how they can get help and a safe space. Refuges provided by councils and charities are vital places of safety for women fleeing violent homes.

Refuges save lives.

Yet victims of domestic abuse face a dangerous postcode lottery of access to

refuges because of deep government cuts to local council funding.

I asked every local authority how much they had spent on domestic violence refuges since 2010. What I found was shocking. At least 34 refuges have been forced to close their doors since 2010 because of cuts. Every council in London has been forced to cut spending on refuges since 2010.

Locally Southwark Council has worked hard with Solace Womens Aid to prioritise and protect vital DV support services. And last year Southwark was the first council housing service in the country to receive accreditation by the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance.

But despite their best efforts because the council has faced cuts of almost half of their total budget since 2010, they

have had to cut services.

After years of struggle to improve domestic violence services, with refuges living hand to mouth, the publication of the Domestic Abuse Bill this week represents a historic opportunity to put refuges on a sustainable footing and ensure victims can get the support they need wherever they live.

There are many welcome measures in the Bill - it creates a wider definition of domestic abuse, it establishes a domestic abuse commissioner to champion victims and survivors, it will end the cross-examination of victims by their abusers in the family courts, it gives new powers to courts and places new duties on councils, and extends protection to women in Northern Ireland.

It is alarming that the London Labour Mayor has reduced another East Dulwich bus route timetable without any public consultation.

But it is a bit rich of East Dulwich Labour politicians to complain.

All the London Mayoral candidates in 2016 knew that the public transport subsidy to London was going to be cut by central government. Sadly the Labour party candidate Sadiq Khan ignored this and made a rash promise to freeze TfL fares for four years. Labour must have known then that not increasing fares with inflation meant that cuts would have to be made. East Dulwich Labour politicians campaigned for that London manifesto and this electoral promise so how on earth can they now fake surprise at the resulting cuts?

This kind of sleight of hand pretending one party is to blame for your own rash electoral promises is one reason why so many voters are cynical these days.

For East Dulwich this means fewer buses on route 12. But it has also meant cuts and route changes to bus routes 40, 176 and 185.

As you rightly pointed out in your editorial these cuts are happening when we need people to switch from private cars to public transport to help fight the climate emergency.

Dual crossword THE PLIGHT OF POPULAR PUBLICANS IS FAR FROM OVER

READERS WILL be familiar with the story of Mick and Linda Norris, the popular former landlords of the historic China Hall pub in Rotherhithe’s Lower Road.

The couple, who had been landlords of the boozer of over 35 years, had to fight a legal battle to save their pub and home after the freehold was sold to off-shore developer, Hamna Wakaf Ltd. At times, Mick and Linda had faced the prospect of being turfed out of their home and business by Christmas Eve. They only managed to secure alternative accommodation and an extension with the help of the community and former MP, Sir Simon Hughes. Yet their plight is not yet over. A costly legal battle with the developer – for whom the News has never found contact details – has left the couple with a whopping £22,000 legal bill.

This is the result of a battle that they only gave up due to poor health. As landlords of the China Hall, Mick and Linda did not just serve those in the local area pints. They established a focal point for people to meet and socialise, a place to establish a sense of community.

This was clear to the News as we attended the closing night of the long-standing boozer – which is currently standing empty – and heard tales of happy nights spent at the pub.

Now as Mick and Linda need help to pay off their legal fees, it is time for the community to return that service. We hope the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe will rally around the ex-publicans.

CREATING A COMMUNITY IS ABOUT MORE THAN JUST BUILDING AS MANY HOUSES AS POSSIBLE

WE NEED new homes for those left languishing on council housing waiting lists, who fear they may be stuck in expensive, and in many cases low quality, private housing forever.

And we desperately need new homes for people trying and failing to get on the property ladder, losing anywhere from a third to over half their salaries on rent. But as long as development on the green belt is held back - with all the arguments for and against - the only way for London to grow is up.

High-rise and high-density developments, however, bring other problems.

An appeal decision on proposals for ‘Camberwell Union’ – a new neighbourhood near Burgess Park rejected by the council – could set a precedent for regeneration projects elsewhere.

The question really being asked is - what makes a good home? And are we willing to sacrifice all the things we need to create a great place to live, in the pursuit of cramming more new homes into the same space?

New homes are coming, including in developments like the Canada Water masterplan, and some will be car-free. But in many areas transport isn’t improving – buses are being cut, the Bakerloo line extension is far off, and doesn’t affect people living on the other side of Burgess Park. Creating a community is about more than just building as many houses as possible.

The results of the appeal will certainly be eagerly anticipated by other campaigners in Old Kent Road and Elephant and Castle – as well as those most affected in Camberwell.

PITY A group of office workers at a complex in Elephant and Castle.

Passers-by have been weeing against a door in the alleyway outside, which has then been leaking into the office underneath.

A polite notice has appeared on the door, asking people to please stop weeing.

“Please can you refrain from urinating in the doorway, as it runs under the gap which runs into the office workspace,” it reads.

“CCTV is in operation and police are aware.

This may result in prosecution.”

Boris’s new pad

DESPITE BORIS Johnson entering Number 10 as prime minister this week, he and partner Carrie Symonds have bought a new love nest in Camberwell.

Our spies tell us his new pad with Carrie is by Myatt’s Fields Park, only a mile or so from their apartment at the centre of much media attention last month.

The four-bed Victorian property was a snip at a

mere £1.35m.

But instead of a terrace, the new place is a semidetached – meaning one less neighbour to worry about recording late-night bust ups.

Poor playgrounds

A COMPETITION has been started by social media users to find the capital’s worst playground.

Unfortunately for the borough, a play area in Rotherhithe has been dubbed the clear frontrunner.

The area appears to only have two play objects inside – and also does not appear to have a functioning gate. “This can’t be beat,” says one.

“It’s just incredibly sad.”

“I’d give that a 1* review on TripAdvisor,” adds another, while one says: “Looks like the area 51 prison playground.”

AROUND FORTY Extinction Rebellion protesters joined a group of Bermondsey mums in a protest against the Thames Super Sewer project on Friday afternoon.

Mums living next to Tideway's Chambers Wharf worksite were prompted to organise the demo in a row over compensation paid to those living facing the worksite - but not those facing away.

Extinction Rebellion activists also demonstrated at the site in a show of solidarity, and in concern at the environmental impact that lorries and dust caused by the concrete pour would cause.

The continuous pour was needed to reinforce the underground structures of the site.

Mother-of-four, Heather Mulkerrins, who helped organise the demo, said: “Those that face the site are being given respite to take their children away while this kind of work is going on, but those who face opposite it are being told we’re not even affected.

“My place is facing the other side, I’ve got four children, three of them with respiratory problems. It’s about all of us being given the same treatment, that’s what today’s all about."

Despite the pouring rain, Ms Mulkerrins and around fifteen other local residents had been out on the streets since before 8am.

“We’ll be here all day,” she said. “It’s for my children’s health.”

Ms Mulkerrins was not alone in anger over the lack of respite while the 36-hour pour was ongoing.

Fellow mother and Chambers Street Resident, Mary Akineele, told the News that dust from the work-site had caused

her and her nine-year-old son, Michael, to need inhalers – but still they will not receive respite from Tideway as their flat does not face the site.

“They say it’s because I don’t have any health issues,” she said.

“But all the kids come out here to play, it’s summertime. So this is going to affect them, the dust is going to affect them.

“But still they keep telling me, ‘no you’re not entitled.’

“There is only one entrance, so how can they say it’s not going to affect us? It’s the same Chambers Street, so I don’t know why they’re saying we’re not affected.”

A TWO-YEAR-OLD girl at the Evelina Children’s Hospital has become the youngest in the world to undergo deep brain stimulation to treat severe and painful muscle movements.

Little Viktoria Kaftanikaite suffers from ‘dystonia’, a condition causing uncontrolled muscle spasms.

At its worst, the condition meant the tot’s arms and legs would flail out and her mouth would twitch – preventing her from eating and affecting her breathing.

She was eventually diagnosed with a rare gene mutation and referred to specialists at Evelina who recommended Deep Brain Stimulation.

It involves electrodes being implanted into deep areas of the brain, and is known to be successful in older children.

But at the time of the operation, Viktoria was just two years and eight months old – believed to be the youngest in the world for the procedure.

Her parents Martinas and Patrycja, from Glasgow, hope that the operation is a step towards an end to the pain and suffering for their daughter and a better quality of life for the whole family.

Doting mum Patrycja said: “I am so happy for my daughter and I hope the stimulation works.

“Our lives have been so hard with her in so much pain, especially for her, so this is a chance that she can live a good and

decided on mitigation and respite claims by residents.

“The panel is formed of independent experts ranging from health professionals to noise specialists, and each decision is based on an individual’s circumstances – including proximity of their home to the site, health and other personal circumstances,” said a Tideway spokesman.

The panel could not comment on individual cases like that of Ms Mulkerrins or Ms Akineele, he said.

One activist who came from Extinction Rebellion in protest against the environmental impact of the major £4.2billion project was Michael, a 19year-old politics student at the University of Exeter.

“We’re here in solidarity with a group of mums and their children that live close by to the Super Sewer here,” he said.

“There’s ways to get around this. It’s not necessary at all, to stop the run-off water getting into the sewage which then overflows it.

“In Philadelphia and New York, they’re stopping the overflow getting into the sewer and they’re not building pointless infrastructure like this.”

“The environmental impact this is having, the health impact this is having, the social impact especially on the children is appalling,” added 20-year-old Sonya, another Extinction Rebellion activist.

Richard Selway, a consultant neurosurgeon at King’s College Hospital, said the world-first operation on the twoyear-old required thinking about how children’s brains are different from those of adults.

“This opens up a whole series of difficulties with the surgery and these are simple things that we don’t need to think about in adult neurology,” he said.

“Questions such as does the adult-sized equipment work with someone so small?

Is the child’s skull thick enough? Will the implant fit inside the body?”

The Evelina London Children’s Hospital is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, having been set up in 1869 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, whose wife and baby died in childbirth.

Dr Jean Pierre Lin, a consultant paediatric neurologist at the Evelina, said: “Viktoria’s uncontrolled and violent movement meant she was in real pain which is extremely upsetting for her parents.

“Deep brain stimulation has been proven in adults and older children to change the course of these conditions,

demonstrators in disrupting a concrete lorry, she said, despite the two van-loads of police officers who were watching nearby.

Yet there also appeared to be some confusion over tactics among Extinction Rebellion activists – with demonstrators not blockading any of the five lorries that passed in a two hour period as they made their way into the worksite.

One mooted plan to park a car on the road to block lorries into the site sparked discussion among assembled activists, some in favour and some against.

But as the News left the scene at around 2pm, no clear decision had yet been made on how, or whether, to blockade the lorries from making their way into the site for the concrete pour.

The deep brain operation on the two-year-old required thinking about how children’s brains are different from those of adults.

Long Peter Gynt stint leaves no regrets

FIRST UP: a confession. I left it until the last 5 minutes of the walk to the National Theatre to admit to my companion for the evening that the play we were going to see - Peter Gynt - was three and a half hours long with two intervals. She commented that she was beginning to “regret her life choices”.

I was slightly apprehensive myself as we

debated how permissible it might be for a reviewer to leave before the end of a show, writes Katie Kelly.

We never revisited this question, entertained as we were from the first five minutes of this adaptation of Peer Gynt by David Hare. James McArdle, as Peter, burst onto the scene via a fabulous magic staircase and dazzled throughout. A self-

obsessed, rambunctious war veteran full of tall tales, he is described by his own mother in the first few minutes as a narcissistic fantasist with attention deficit disorder. Harsh words from your nearest and dearest but not unwarranted. After a few days in his small Scottish town he has alienated the whole community, abducted and abandoned a bride and fallen for the mysterious Sabine - a refugee with apparent depth and integrity, who, bafflingly, perceives something of worth in Peter underneath the tall tales and rank selfishness.

From here things just get stranger and stranger. An encounter with a mountain troll king and his daughter traps Peter and forces him to abandon his better self and Sabine to attempt an odyssey of sorts; wandering through dreamlike landscapes desperate to create a meaningful story and existence. The only way is down, it seems, though at the centre of the

fantastical Trolls, whose motto is “To thine own self be true – and damn the rest of the world”, are imagined as an Oxbridge dining society. Onecharacter sports a Boris Johnson wig.

Elsewhere, someone describes the contribution of the Russians to global politics as a result of their “happy go lucky approach to the sanctity of human life”. Not subtle perhaps but laugh out loud funny.

There were a lot of empty seats in the vast Olivier auditorium and the play has been somewhat criticised, but I left entertained, amused, provoked and very happy to recommend the experience. 3.5 hours. No regrets.

Crooks and detectives seek Maltesers

journey the vacuous antihero makes a brief visit home to hold his dying mother, with extraordinary poignancy.

After this, Peter morphs into a golf course owning, cheating, media magnate and arms dealer and then, finally, a broken and bitter old man.

Eventually, his journey of selfinvention leads him back home to face the reckoning of the brilliant Oliver Ford Davies, who declares that time is up, and Peter must die and be ‘recycled’ as someone who has led the mediocre life, he most dreaded. At the beginning of the play Peter declares that “If I can’t be exceptional, then I don’t want to be” and at the end he is desperate for significance, even preferring to be sent to hell than to be simply one of the ordinary masses.

A strong satirical thread runs through the play including a critique of the endless banal self-invention and promotion of our social media age. The critique is not nuanced: the

TENNESSEE WILLIAMS’ The Night of the Iguana exceeded all my expectations. An evening in a stormy, steamy village on the coast of Mexico in 1940 was the perfect setting for Clive Owen’s stormy and steamy defrocked priest Shannon, writes Michael Holland.

AS THE performance of Anthony Horowitz’s The Falcon’s Malteser began I wondered if it was going to be too farcical and theatrical for my taste. However, after just a few minutes in I and a packed house were hooked, writes Susan Hallissey

Matt Jopling as the bumbling private detective Tim Diamond, and his younger brother Nick, played by Stan Eleanor Green, become embroiled in the case of the Falcon’s Malteser. This involves a clue delivered to them by a mysterious small Mexican, Johnny Naples. Naples leaves one clue – a box of Maltesers.

Tim has some great one-liners, while Nick provides a huge amount of energy and narration throughout - He is the brains behind the operation, as Tim wouldn’t know a clue if it jumped up and bit him on the nose.

The rest of the cast, and there are a number of these, are played with gusto by Fergus Leathem and Samantha Sutherland. Leathem’s first Inspector Snape scene, with Tim Diamond playing guitar and the Inspector rapping, had my companion and I in stitches. Suther-land as the Fat Man and Betty Cleaner, amongst others, was a whirlwind – I’m not sure how she kept up!

There were some ingenious touches.

The car chase, the running and butcher’s knife slow motion scenes, cleverly used physical comedy, plus, the musical balance seemed just right along with the sound design.

This was a neat and entertaining piece of theatre. Perfectly paced with deft touches for the changing shop scenes.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I initially thought I would. The cast

were dynamic and worked as an ensemble brilliantly. A great deal of good timing and commitment was evident from beginning to end.

Fergus Woods Dunlop has adapted this piece from Anthony Horo-witz’s young adults book of the same name.

Now a tour guide with a coach-load of Baptist Church ladies in his charge, the lecherous Shannon rocks up at old friend Maxine’s beach hotel where Germans are celebrating the Blitzkrieg of London, a con artist and her grandfather are living on credit, and his tour passengers want him fired for the statutory rape of one of their group.

In the first half there is a lot of comedy, which surprised me as Tennessee Williams usually just makes me sweaty and itchy, and after the interval we see the unravelling of people’s lives before they begin to make sense to us. The story meanders a bit over almost 3 hours, and I was wondering where it was going on a few occasions, but it all comes nicely back together at the end.

There is a lot to be impressed with in this production: James McDonald’s direction is one; Rae Smith’s rain forest set that oozed and

dripped is a major part of the play, then the performances from the main protagonists. Anna Gunn as Maxine was the easiest to read as she was the sane one just wanting to run her hotel with minimal fuss and enough money to enjoy life; and Owen’s Shannon was a little boy in the body of an unhinged man who needed to be taken care of, but it was the Hannah Jelkes character that was the most enigmatic. Was she an artist or just a con woman? Was she a virgin spinster or just a con woman? Did she really want to help Shannon or was she just a con woman? Lia Williams teased every nuance out of Hannah in a seemingly under-played performance, but which quietly became the most powerful in this hotel zoo.

The south Londoner ‘sex pioneer’

ONE OF the first people to study sex and sexual behaviour and publicly declare homosexuality was both natural and normal was a south Londoner and St Thomas’ medical student.

Havelock Ellis (1859-1939) was born in Croydon, educated in south London, and became a pioneer in the nascent field of sexology.

After teaching for several years in Australia, he enrolled in St Thomas Hospital in 1879 to study medicine.

During his time at the prestigious hospital, Ellis joined a coterie of leading academics and creatives, including George Bernard Shaw and Arthur Symonds, through the Fellowship of New Life, which later became the Fabian Society.

Living in Brixton’s Dover Mansions, Ellis was an editor with interests ranging from seventeenth dramas to contemporary science journals, who also began his own research, including the seminal Studies in the Psychology of Sex, written in six parts from 1897 to 1928.

Conceived as a kind of sexual encyclopaedia, Psychology of Sex analysed the biology, physiology, and social and cultural attitudes to human sexual behaviour; with topics ranging from homosexuality, masturbation, and fetishes – and caused an immediate scandal.

The first volume, Sexual Inversion, was the first academic study of homosexuality ever published in the UK, profiling gay men and women Ellis knew well and written at a time when homosexuality was illegal.

It featured five years’ worth of case studies and data, collected while at King’s College London, and argued gay sex should not be a crime.

Rather than presenting it as a mental or physical sickness that should be ‘cured’, as was attempted by the physicians of the day, Ellis showed homosexuality as a common and natural difference occurring throughout history and across all societies and cultures.

Ellis used the term ‘Eonism’ for what we would now describe as ‘trans’ behaviour – encompassing cross-gender, or the belief a person is non-binary, or born the ‘wrong’

gender. He called homosexuality ‘inversion’, and described lesbians and gay men as ‘inverts’ – whose desires are ‘inverted’ and channelled onto the same gender.

Although to today’s reader his work is out-dated, sexist, and his terminology superseded, he did much to develop the early study of psychology, and sexology and many of his ideas were taken up by worldfamous psychologists including his arch-rival Sigmund Freud.

As with many other writers and thinkers so ahead of his time, Ellis found his work on trial with obscenity charges, with one judge describing his work’s scientific value as just ‘a pretence, adopted for the purpose of selling a filthy publication’.

Sexual Inversion was vociferously attacked and ultimately banned, described as a “lewd, wicked, bawdy, scandalous libel."

Despite this setback, Ellis continued to write and publish his work and gained high-profile support from other forward thinkers.

In 1899, he released the second volume, The Evolution of Modesty,

The Phenomena of Sexual Periodicity, Auto-Eroticism (which looked at masturbation) and in 1903 came Love and Pain, the Sexual Impulse of Women, then Sexual Selection in Man (1905), Erotic Symbolism, The Mechanism of Detumescence (1906, which examined erectile function), and Sex in Relation to Society (1910).

He even wrote about his own particular fetish, urolagnia, whereby sexual satisfaction is found in urination, which he described as ‘within the normal limits of variation of sexual emotion’, and an impulse felt by both men and women including those of ‘high intellectual distinction’.

Ellis believed in women’s rights, sex education, and contraception at a time when these ideas were hugely radical. Some of his beliefs are now unpalatable, including his staunch support of eugenics.

He was, however, ground-breaking in his determined, but highly controversial, belief that all kinds of consensual sex are natural and healthy.

Ellis wrote that ‘when love is

suppressed, hate takes its place’. His work sought to understand sexual difficulties experienced by men and women and to help them overcome feelings of shame.

Speculation about Ellis’ own lovelife somewhat overshadowed his work, with his revelations about his own sexual proclivities, and longterm impotence, fuelling gossip.

In 1891 at the age of 32, and still a virgin, he married writer and women’s rights campaign Edith Lees.

The pair had an ‘open relationship’, with Lees openly lesbian, and lived separately.

After her death, he had another long-term relationship, where he found greater sexual satisfaction.

Ellis is one of many Victorian and Edwardians who put themselves at considerable risk to help create a more tolerant and understanding society.

Although he struggled to achieve satisfaction himself, in his own words: “Sex lies at the root of life, and we can never learn to reverence life until we know how to understand sex.”

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable bridge works to be carried out, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in Dockley Road, between Thurland Road and Lucey Way.

The amount of the levy is set by the UK Government and is a yearly amount between £299 and £4,440, depending on the rateable value of the premises and their actual use.

The Council has decided that the late night levy will be introduced on 01 September 2019 across the whole Borough.

The Council has decided that the late night supply period will begin at 00:01hrs and end at 06:00hrs every day. Only premises which are authorised to sell/supply alcohol (both on and off sales) during this time will be subject to the levy.

The Council has decided to exempt the following permitted categories of premises from paying the levy as defined in the Late Night Levy (Expenses, Exemptions and Reductions) Regulations 2012: • Premises with overnight accommodation, where alcohol can only be supplied to persons staying at the premises for consumption on the premises, i.e. not supplied to members of the public that are not staying overnight at the premises; • Theatres and cinemas; • Community Amateur Sports Clubs; • New Year’s Day (i.e. 1st January) premises only (this relates to premises which are authorised to supply/sell alcohol between 00:01 hours and 06:00 hours, ONLY on New Year's Day).

The Council has decided that a reduction of 30% be granted to premises licence holders in relation to on-trade premises that are in receipt of Small Business Rate Relief (as specified in Part III of the Local Government Finance Act 1988) and have a rateable value of £12,000 or less.

The Council has decided NOT to grant an exemption for: • Country Village Pubs; • Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) as defined in sections 4(g) and 4(h) of the Late Night Levy (Expenses, Exemptions and Reductions) Regulations; • Bingo Halls; • Community Premises.

The Council has decided not to grant a reduction of 30% for members of a best practice scheme.

A review of the levy including exemptions and reductions to take place after 12 months of operation of the levy.

The Council has an agreement with the Deputy Mayor's Office of Policing and Crime (MOPAC) that the allocation of the revenue from the Late Night Levy (this includes their statutory 70% split of the revenue), will be managed through the current Night Time Economy contract with the Metropolitan Police.

The alternative route for affected traffic will be via Rouel Road, Enid Street, Abbey Street, Jamaica Road, St James Road, Dockley Road. Dockley Road, Thurland Road, Spa Road, Rouel Road, Dockley Road as applicable.

Boss Rose targets a top-seven spot

DULWICH HAMLET drew 1-1 with a technical and talented Tottenham Hotspur side last Saturday – and gave a trial to former Millwall youngster Lewis White.

With the Tottenham first team currently on tour in Singapore, Saturday’s game was a chance for Dulwich to test themselves against a younger Spurs side drawn from their under-18 and under-23 teams. Managed

by Wayne Burnett, who himself was Dulwich manager back in 2006, this Tottenham development XI started brightly and held the ball well in possession.

However, Dulwich grew into the game and took the lead through Nyren Clunis.

Manager Gavin Rose will no doubt be pleased to have seen three of his new signings combine in the build-up in a goal that was very pleasing on the eye.

Ben Chapman played a diagonal ball to Jeffrey Monakana on the left wing, who then crossed to Danny Mills. Mills controlled it in the six-yard box for Clunis to strike home from close range.

Inspired by taking the lead, Dulwich continued to test Ed Smith, the Tottenham triallist goalkeeper. Kieran Monlouis came closest to scoring a second, hitting the post with a low shot after a lay-off from Clunis.

Tottenham shuffled the pack in the second half and the introduction of lively winger Dilan Markanday had an immediate impact. After a flurry of Spurs chances, midfielder Tashan Oakley-Boothe picked up a loose ball in the box, following a shot from Markanday, and stuck it into the top right corner to equalise.

However, Rose’s subs for Dulwich also had a part to play on the outcome of the game. Striker Ade Yusuff was through on goal and taken clean out by substitute goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi, giving the referee no choice but to point to the penalty spot.

Yusuff begrudgingly allowed teammate Christian Smith to take the spot kick but he stuck his effort over the bar. Oluwayemi’s blushes had been spared and the game finished one apiece.

Overall Dulwich had shown plenty to be optimistic about, in front of a bumper home crowd 2,931. This had been a very commendable performance against a decent Spurs side and another good workout for the team as the National League South season draws closer.

Rose also handed a substitute appearance to White, following his release by Millwall this summer. The 20-year-old winger was in a Lions senior squad when he was 16, but injury disrupted his time at The Den. With a clearer picture of Dulwich’s strongest XI starting to emerge, Rose spoke confidently of his side’s chances for the upcoming season. “I’d like to be in the play-offs at a minimum,” he said.

“If we improved on our finish last year (14th), I’d say that’s progress but I’d like us to be in the play-offs.

“I don’t think that’s easy with the clubs in this league to finish in the top seven because there’s a lot of competition, some good players and good managers in there as well, so if we can be one of that seven, then that would be an achievement.”

Dulwich are in action at Champion Hill on Saturday, July 27 against Crystal Palace. Their final pre-season friendly is at Carshalton Athletic on Monday, July 29, before the league starts on August 3 away to Tonbridge Angels.

Dulwich cricketers get winning draw - but fall further behind leaders

DULWICH HAD the better of their AJ Fordham Surrey Championship Division 2 match at Old Rutlishians last weekend, but were unable to separate the eighth wicket pair and had to settle for a winning draw.

Dulwich were put into bat, but before the players could take the field a heavy downpour delayed the start by 75 minutes and caused the match to be reduced to 81 overs. Skipper Ed Stolle got them under way with seven runs from the first four balls, but the bowling tightened up and wickets started to fall. Chris Purshouse, Matt

Marfani and Jake Dunford each faced 16 balls in scoring 7, 8 and 8 respectively. Stolle was the fourth man out, having made 27 off 52 balls, and Sam Ellison fell for 2 in the next over to make it 56-5 in the 20th.

Elliot Miles thus joined Will Bancroft and they defended resolutely against spinners Ross Trimmings and Trishan Patel.

Bancroft made the early running, but after a slow start Miles got into his stride and played some inventive shots, including a remarkable reverse sweep for six. The pair had added 110 in 19.5 overs when Miles was out to the last ball of the 39th over. After taking 28 balls over his first five runs, he had needed only a further 36 for

the next 58, finishing with 63 off 64, the top score by a Dulwich batsman this season.

At 166-6 Stolle was looking at an early declaration, but the decision was taken out of his hands in the next over. Jon Lodwick hit the second ball for a single. Bancroft was run out off the third, having made a vital 45 off 60 balls. Salaar Waqar was also run out off the fourth, without facing a ball. Lodwick was bowled by the fifth and Alex Gledhill went the same way to the sixth. Dulwich had lost their last five wickets in seven balls, and the last four in four, to be all out for 167 after 40 overs, leaving their opponents 41 overs to get the runs.

to finish with 4-34 off 12.

Stolle opened the bowling with the pace of Lodwick and the spin of Miles, and was rewarded when Lodwick struck in his third over and Miles in his fourth to make it 14-2 after eight. Lodwick then removed their two most experienced batsmen in three balls in his 7th over to reduce them to 28-4 in the 13th. With the batsmen now intent on survival, Trimmings and Dan Nuttall resisted for nine overs to add 16 before Waqar had Nuttall caught by Stolle for 9, and Gledhill had their skipper lbw for a duck in the next over. A bright interlude by the teenage Patel enlivened proceedings until Miles returned to bowl him for 27, off 26

balls, to make it 85-7 in the 29th over.

With 12 overs to go hopes of a Dulwich victory were high, but Trimmings and Evan Watson resisted everything the bowlers could throw at them to secure the draw on 106-7, with Trimmings completing a fine allround performance with 39 not out.

Dulwich gained seven points from the match and remain in fifth place, but the gap behind the leaders has widened. This weekend they have a home match against Oxted & Limpsfield, who beat them easily in their first match but who are now one place below them in the table.

Curran and Pope return but Malan stars for victors

CAPTAIN DAWID Malan scored his third T20 hundred as Middlesex made it two wins out of two in the Vitality Blast South Group with a 37-run victory over Surrey at the Kia Oval this week.

Malan’s 117 off 57 balls was the cornerstone of Middlesex’s 209 for 3 and when Tom Helm claimed the key wicket of Aaron Finch Surrey were up against it. Ollie Pope made 47 but with Ben Foakes out with a side injury Surrey looked a batsman short. They finished on 172 for 9 and have lost both games so far.

A crowd of 23,708 had earlier given Malan a standing ovation after a magnificent innings which included seven sixes and 11 fours. With Steve Eskinazi he put on 55 in the powerplay and they had plundered 131 from 11 after taking 22 off veteran offspinner Gareth Batty.

Batty wasn’t the only bowler to suffer.

In his first game since helping England win the World Cup, Liam Plunkett’s two overs cost 24 while Imran Tahir conceded 40 runs in his spell, although he did have the consolation of removing former South Africa team-

mate AB de Villiers for just three.

Tom Curran made a much-needed breakthrough in the 12th over when he bowled Eskinazi (42) round his legs and Tahir struck in the next over with de Villiers was leg before trying to reverse sweep.

Surrey dragged things back in the next six overs when they only conceded 38 runs, but Middlesex produced a big finish with 23 coming off the 19th from Jade Dernbach.

Curran, who was the pick of the Surrey attack with 2 for 29, picked up Malan in the final over off a top-edged a pull while Scott provided added impetus at the end with 35 off 24 balls.

Middlesex took control by sending back both openers with 21 on the board. Will Jacks drove to mid-wicket in the first over from Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Helm had Finch superbly caught by John Simpson diving to his left off an inside edge for nine.

Pope looked in superb form despite playing just two second XI T20s on Monday as preparation after three months recovering from surgery to his left shoulder.

The 21-year-old hit a fluent 47 off 31 balls with four boundaries and two sixes before he was caught on the midwicket fence – one of four wickets for

Middlesex’s only concern was the sight of de Villiers going off after injuring a hand trying to take a diving catch.

well. It was important to stem the flow of runs which we managed to do but then I let the side down in my last over, which didn’t go to plan.

“We feel anything is chase-able here, but we are a few batsmen short at the moment because of injuries, although that is not an excuse. Ollie Pope

showed his class again – it’s so good to have him back and he hit the ball so sweetly, it didn’t look like he has been away for three months.

“We want to peak at the right time and get some momentum and I am sure we will get some wins soon. There is still a lot of cricket to be played.”

It is understandable then that the sudden and euphoric end to that journey might have left Plunkett feeling drained by the gravity of the achievement.

“I feel good. It was an emotional rollercoaster,” he said.

“Win the World Cup, on a massive high, then all of a sudden the boys disappear to different competitions, playing the Ashes build up, but it was amazing.

“It’s great to look back at the videos – Morgs lifting the trophy – I think I’ll watch that every day for the rest of my life.

“What a journey, I feel good. It’s a nice feeling now, especially coming down here [to Dulwich CC] and the kids seeing the trophy and wanting autographs – it makes you feel even more special and hopefully we can influence more kids to play the game.”

PACEMAN LIAM Plunkett has admitted it would fill him with huge pride if England’s World Cup success inspires a generation to play cricket.

The 34-year-old got an early indication of the reach of England’s stunning Super Over victory against New Zealand when his visit to Dulwich Cricket Club earlier this week was met with hundreds of young children eager to meet a World Cup hero.

Plunkett obliged the fanfare by signing autographs and posing for photographs, with the small matter of the World Cup trophy that was lifted by captain Eoin Morgan also on show, for more than two hours.

JON DADI Bodvarsson is comfortable with the underdog tag – just ask England in Euro 2016.

Bodvarsson was in an Iceland team that was a rank outsider at the competition, but they finished second in their group – above eventual winners Portugal.

They were expected to be comfortably put to the sword when they met Roy Hodgson’s side in the second round, and when Wayne Rooney scored in the fourth minute that looked like it was the end of their adventure.

But Ragnar Sigurdsson levelled two minutes later and most people will have seen that clip of Steve McLaren, tracking the game for Sky Sports, describing how comfortable England were before his face dropped just as Kolbeinn Sigthorsson scored what turned out to be the winner.

Iceland lost 5-2 to hosts France in the quarter-finals, but they had captured the imagination, as had their fans with their famous thunder clap.

There was a lot written about Iceland and their progress in international football based on revolution at underage level with pitches being built

in most towns and professional coaches employed.

Bodvarsson, 27, grew up in Selfoss, a town of about 7,000 people in the south of Iceland. He made his debut in 2012 and has 41 caps, and lists that 21 win over England as one of the highlights of his career.

“The Euros in general, really, was just a ridiculous time,” he told the News this week. “In a way we surprised ourselves a little bit. Our main goal was just to get out of the group stage. Then we managed to beat England and we were like, ‘what’s going on, can we go all the way?’ But we met France and they were, for me, the best team in the tournament.

“It was a fantastic time and I think the team in Iceland right now is one in a lifetime. It’s getting older now so hopefully we’ll be able to get in more good players as the time goes by. The team is so strong that it’s difficult for younger players to come in.

“There are similar aspects between Millwall and the Iceland national team. We are underdogs but we have an identity that we’re really clear on.

There’s no doubt what’s required of us on the field. We have to set the standard of what we’re capable of.

“It’s very similar to the national team and if we’re on the same page then we can go far.

“It was maybe in 2002-03 when I found things were changing [in

Iceland]. In my home town we were training on these gravel pitches and then they changed into artificial surfaces. That was a huge step.

“The population in Iceland is very little but we have a lot of coaches that are really well-educated. Maybe in bigger countries there are a lot of parents and not as many coaches to choose from. It’s very professional, the facilities are really good now, especially with the harsh weather conditions that we have. We have these indoor halls. It’s been getting better and better.

“Football-wise as well it’s such a passionate country, you grow up watching the Premier League. It’s a very sporty culture.

“It was about when I was fourteen that I was starting to get more interest and train more with the first team.

That’s when I thought maybe I could try and go all the way with this.

Before that I was just enjoying it as a kid, not thinking about being a professional.”

Bodvarsson is listed on various websites as being a striker or a winger.

However, he says that’s not quite accurate, as he looks to challenge Matt Smith, Tom Bradshaw and Aiden O’Brien for a place up front.

He explained: “I favour being up top.

Right wing...it says that on the internet but I haven’t played there for a really long time. I can if I’m asked to but my favourite position is centre-forward.

“It’s healthy for everyone to have competition. All of us are really good mates as well, we talk to each other and what we can do better. We’ll see how it goes this season, it’s going to be a long season as well so we’ll need everyone. I’m happy for the competition.

“With the national team we play very often 4-4-2 so I’m quite used to playing with another striker. I personally like that but I can also play other systems as well.

“There were some other [clubs interested] but nothing for me better than Millwall. I had options that were better financially but that’s not what I’m about, I just want to enjoy football and make the most of it. It’s a short career and I just felt with Millwall that it’s an environment and style of play that fits me and that makes you happier on the field.”

Millwall finished 21st last season, but Bodvarsson is targeting a big improvement in 2019-20. “I think higher than mid-table would be fantastic. It’s important that you have a high goal, not just thinking that you need to survive. If you’re just thinking that then you’re going for a relegation battle.

“So you should aim higher. Hopefully we’ll get the momentum as well, that’s so important in the Championship to get it early doors. If we win a couple of games in a row then brilliant and we see where that takes us.”

JIRI SKALAK is doing as much as he can to grab his first-team opportunity with both hands – or a swish of his right boot last Sunday, to be exact.

It was one of the frustrations last season that the 27-year-old Czech International couldn’t get a run in the team and show his obvious quality.

Lions boss Neil Harris admitted Skalak wasn’t fit when he joined, but at £750,000 and having played 31 times in Brighton’s promotion season to the Premier League in 20161-7, it was worth a punt.

It’s taken him almost a year to show what’s he’s capable of, with the caveat that this is only pre-season.

But he’s working hard and looking sharp, and took his goal superbly at Priestfield. First he made a forward run as the ball was played to Ryan Leonard, then checked to stay onside before sprinting onto the midfielder’s looping pass forward and halfvolleying past goalkeeper Joe Walsh and into the top corner. More of the same this season, please.

Millwall now look strong in wide areas, with Skalak, Shane Ferguson, Aiden O’Brien, Jed Wallace and Connor Mahoney competing for places. Jon Dadi Bodvarsson can also play wide and Harris showed last season that he is tactically flexible enough to include three or four of them in the same line-up in a variation of 4-3-3. And there will be more additions.

It’s been a positive pre-season and certainly the air of enthusiasm among supporters is greater than it was a month ago, before the new arrivals.

Fans might have been worried about the slow pace of recruitment, but Millwall were patient to get the right players in.

Skalak’s first-half goal was cancelled about by that most ubiquitous of pre-season players, the Trialist, who scored a penalty.

But Jake Cooper hopefully gave a taster of things to come when he headed in Mahoney’s second-half corner.

Millwall appear to have more firepower all over the pitch.

THE “GIANTS” in the Millwall box are set to have good service from out wide this season with Connor Mahoney in the side.

Mahoney was one of the top crossers in the Championship last season and has 6ft 6ins Matt Smith and 6ft 2ins Jon Dadi Bodvarsson to aim for at his new club.

Mahoney also played briefly at Barnsley with Tom Bradshaw, who is renowned for his anticipation in the box though Millwall fans haven’t seen much of that so far as the striker’s first season with the club ended through injury last November.

Neil Harris is set to name a strong side this Saturday against Real Sociedad with Mahoney primed for his first Den appearance.

“I’m not the quickest but the gaffer said to me I cover the ground really well. I’m deceivingly quick on the ball, I probably run quicker with it than without it,” Mahoney said about his game.

“He said when we hit on the counter you and Jed [Wallace] or Skally [Jiri Skalak], whoever the wingers are go full throttle at defences. That’s when we’ll start scaring teams and opening them up.

“I played with Bradders at Barnsley which was an experience in itself.

He’s going to be one of the main players for us this season hopefully.

CONNOR MAHONEY has revealed a conversation with Neil Harris was the “turning point” as he considered his future this summer – and he believes there’s no reason why the Lions can’t be play-off contenders in 2019-20.

There were a number of clubs interested in signing Mahoney from Bournemouth, but Harris’ influence persuaded him to commit to a longterm deal with Millwall.

Mahoney, 22, explained how the move materialised.

“I heard about Millwall’s interest when I was away on holiday with my family,” he said. “It took maybe a week or two to get it over the line.

Once I knew about the interest I wanted to get it done as quickly as possible and make sure I was in there before the games started so I could gel with the lads and start the first game of the season.

“I knew about the club and how big the history is and about the fan base. I knew some of the players and playing against them last season what kind of team they were. I felt it would benefit me if I did come here.

“It was actually a turning point for me when [Harris] came and met me.

He did a PowerPoint presentation and told me his plans for me. He said what I wanted to hear, that I was going to be playing and that I was going to be the supply for the strikers.

“For a manager to say that meant it was pretty much a done deal and I went back and spoke to my family. We all made the decision that this would be the right career move for me.”

Mahoney has shown in pre-season so far that he is equally comfortable on

both feet. He had a good grounding at Bournemouth, who under Eddie Howe are renowned for their quick, technical football.

One of the things that prompted the Cherries to sign Mahoney from Blackburn was his ability off either side.

“I don’t have a natural strong foot,” Mahoney revealed. “Sometimes I prefer to shoot on my left, sometimes on my right, it’s just about how I feel on the day.

“One of the big things the gaffer here wanted from me was taking corners with both feet and free-kicks with both feet. That’s what I’ll do this season.

“I think I can play both sides of football now. I can get the ball down and play but I can work hard and defend, which I think is more suited to this club.

We’re not going to get the ball down and start playing around the back.

“It’s nice to have the skill in the locker to get the ball down and play but if I need to get down and dirty I can do that as well.

“Right-wing is probably my favourite position, cutting in or going on the outside, giving the defenders a bit of a nightmare. I’m happy to play left as well. Playing is the most important thing for me.

“You’re always going to have four or five wingers at a club, you just have to make sure that during pre-season you work hard and hit your stats in games. For me that’s getting my crosses in, getting assists, getting a few goals.

“As long as I do that I don’t think there will be an issue. Competition is healthy, we all want to push each other on.

“The main thing for me this season was to get games and play and Millwall were offering that. I told [Howe] that if I wasn’t in his plans

then this was the career move I wanted to make.

“I still had a few years left on my contract so I could have stayed there.

I have a house there so could have been settled, but I want challenges in my career. I want to take the next step and this was a big challenge for me and one I’m looking forward to.

“I just felt that I needed to make somewhere my home for the next few years. I signed a long-term contract so I want to be here for the next five, six years if we can push on as a club.”

Like Millwall, Birmingham were dragged into a relegation battle late in the season. Mahoney was on loan at Blues, who were deducted ten points for breaching profitability and sustainability rules.

Mahoney doesn’t think he will be spending another season scrapping near the bottom.

“We’ve got a strong team here with a few more additions to come in,” he said. “We’ve had a few good additions already.

“I don’t see why we can’t be fighting high. Play-offs would be ideal but a top-half finish would be a positive season.

“It wasn’t the best season last year for the club. Fans need to be realistic as well about the Championship, it’s getting harder and harder every season.

“This club isn’t spending millions and millions on players like other teams. We need to be realistic as a club and as a team, but also dream big as well.

“If we set our sights on the play-offs I don’t see why we can’t do that. The club has shown it before, they finished eighth and they’ve probably got a better team now than back then. If we are around the top six around Christmas, February, then you never know what could happen.”

exactly what I’m about and that’s ultimately what made me choose Millwall. “[Harris] told me everything, it was like I was talking to myself. It was brilliant to hear what he had to say and his ideas. I’m a direct kind of player, I like to go into channels and win headers as much as I

can. I try to be as energetic as possible and hopefully knock in some goals at the same time.

“At Reading I felt like I wasn’t playing to my strengths at times. I feel I’m in an environment now where I hope can do even better.”

MILLWALL SIGNED Ireland under-21 captain Jayson Molumby this week – a midfielder who has been compared to Roy Keane.

Molumby, who will be 20 this August, joined on a season-long loan from Brighton, with whom he recently signed a new two-year contract.

Lions boss Neil Harris revealed Molumby had suggested Millwall to Brighton as a possible loan destination, illustrating some of the determined character that was a feature of former Ireland captain Keane’s career.

Molumby was born and grew up in Waterford, the county bordering Keane’s Cork, and moved to Brighton in 2015 after playing youth football with Railway Athletic. He is an all-round midfielder who can go from box to box and has good technique and an ability to get goals.

“What I wanted coming into the season

was to get out on loan, and Millwall seems the perfect fit for me,” Molumby, right, said.

“The Championship is a huge level, and I’m looking forward to the challenge.

“I would describe myself personally as a hard-working midfielder who likes to get on the ball and make tackles, and I like to get forward when I can. If I’m asked to play deeper then I’ll just work hard for the team.

“What you can expect is a bit of passing and a will to win.”

“When I first heard Millwall were interested, I thought about how much of a big club it was to come into. When I spoke to the gaffer, I felt it was important to come here. He was great with me.
