OVER A hundred rape cases in Southwark and Lambeth are being delayed by months because of a backlog in digital processing.

Backlogs are piling up as a result of cases where full downloads of material from phones and other devices, both deleted and saved, are needed.

The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee heard that the issue is a major challenge for the Metropolitan Police, with delays varying from six to nine months.

Committee member Caroline Pidgeon (pictured) said that in Lambeth and Southwark there are 180 live rape cases.

140 of those are facing delays, most of which are waiting for information from the forensic labs.

Ms Pidgeon told London Deputy Mayor Sophie Linden: "You have got people who have been raped waiting six to nine months to decide whether they have got enough evidence to take this to court.

"People's lives are on hold."

NEW FIGURES uncovered by MP Neil Coyle show the staggering cost to the taxpayer of delays from problems with Universal Credit.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP has become a vociferous campaigner for reform after the new benefit system – which combines several payments into one – was first trialled in Southwark nearly three years ago.

Data from Southwark Council shows the flagship Tory welfare policy has led to surging food bank dependency and a rise in rent arrears.

Data obtained by Coyle has now

revealed that the failing system has cost taxpayers £115 million this year alone.

Despite claiming the nationwide rollout has been put on hold, the Department for Work and Pensions was forced to admit more than half a million people have been moved onto Universal Credit since the beginning of January.

But instead of axing the waiting time for their first payments, the government has been giving out an extra two weeks of housing benefit – to the tune of £115 million which Coyle said wouldn’t need to be spent if the wait was axed.

The DWP has claimed 95 per cent of first payments are made ‘in full and on time’.

Judicial review on Elephant regen adjourned by the High Court

A JUDICIAL review into the Elephant and Castle regeneration scheme due to go take place this week has been adjourned by the High Court.

The hearing, which had been slated for Wednesday and Thursday this week, will now take place at a date later in the year to be confirmed – likely in September.

The decision is believed to be an administrative one rather than as a result of any party involved.

Although the shopping centre landlord and developer, Delancey, has said delays to the eventual demolition cause uncertainty to traders, campaigners have strongly refuted this implicit criticism, arguing: “If they gave us a scheme that included space for Elephant traders and enough proper social housing we would not be in this position.”

AN IMPRESSIVE 1,700sq foot mural dedicated to Only Fools and Horses was painted over without the artist’s knowledge only two days after it was unveiled.

The striking piece in Burgess Park showed Del Boy, Rodney and Grandad beaming under the slogan ‘Welcome to Peckham’, and was unveiled by its artist Gustavo Nénão on Friday (July 12).

said.

“Located in Burgess Park, in Peckham, Zone 1, this 1700 square foot of wall definitely required many energy and time.”

But only two days later, three men were seen painting over the mural, despite it attracting many admirers online.

“I don’t really know what’s happened,” Mr Nénão told one fan of the artwork in an exchange posted online, adding that it was “very sad.”

The decision to swiftly cover up the piece sparked a backlash online, which some wrongly attributed to Southwark Council.

However, a council spokesperson said: “The mural was created on private property with the owner’s permission and we can confirm that the people shown painting over it are not council staff.”

The images prompted speculation on social media about who had ordered the display to be covered up.

“Why would someone destroy such a lovely symbol of welcome?” said one Facebook user.

Another added: “It’s criminal it’s been painted over. While another added simply: “What 24-carat plonkers!” Mr Nénão has been contacted for further comment.

Mayor knocks back pier plan over ‘party boat’ fears

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has opened consultation on a controlled parking zone (CPZ) for Rotherhithe and Surrey Docks – but says no CPZ is not an option.

The proposal, part of the ‘Rotherhithe Movement Plan’, will see residents give their views on what kind of CPZ should be introduced, but they will have no option to not have a CPZ at all.

Town hall bosses said the measure was necessary because of planned development in the Rotherhithe area, including the Canada Water masterplan.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, who holds the cabinet’s transport portfolio, said: “Without a CPZ, already busy roads would become gridlocked with cars from the 3,000 new homes.

“In addition to this, the Rotherhithe peninsular is already problematic because it is currently used as a carpark, by commuters.

“Many of whom drive into the area, park up and take a train into central London or Canary Wharf.”

He said he hoped residents would understand the CPZ was necessary and engage with the council on the hours and days it would need to be in place.

Other projects open for consultation as part of the movement plan include a bid to create two-way streets in the Lower Road area and the creation of a Cycleway in Rotherhithe to link with the Cycleway 4 currently being constructed.

The measures come as TfL works on constructing Cycleway 4, a segregated cycling route between Tower Bridge and Greenwich.

SADIQ KHAN has said that a controversial proposal to extend a pier in the City of London, which residents feared could lead to a giant ‘party boat’ on the Thames, does not comply with the London plan.

However, the bid to reinstate the currently disused Swan Lane Pier close to London Bridge could be remedied to comply with the London Plan, he added.

City of London Corporation officials have not yet set a committee date to consider the proposals, the News understands.

Residents have raised fears over the prospect of a giant ‘party boat’ used for corporate events coming to the river Thames because of the plan.

The ‘Ocean Diva’ ship would be 282ft, larger than a football pitch, and it can hold up to 1,500 guests for ‘special occasions’, its website says.

Among those raising concerns were Living Bankside, a group representing the 13,000 residents living along the river from the OXO Tower to City Hall.

“Whilst the application is purportedly to build a pier that could improve accessibility to the River Thames, we note that the pier will be built only if the Ocean Diva party boat can use it, because the Ocean Diva is a financial partner in the scheme,” said its chair Amir Eden in an extensive letter sent to

planning authorities in April.

Among the concerns he said, were a lack of transparency in the application, and noise and pollution concerns.

The plans have been opposed by Southwark Cathedral with its Dean, Andrew Nunn, among those writing a letter of objection. The pier is located directly opposite the Cathedral.

“We are informed that the pier will be used for vessels such as Ocean Diva which has a huge capacity as a party and event boat,” he said in a letter to planning authorities.

“The size of this barge and the potential disturbance to the area in the evening would be very disruptive and detrimental to the quality of life in the area.”

However, planning consultants DP9, speaking on behalf of Ocean Diva, had denied that the planning application for the pier was designed to sneak in the ‘huge’ boat.

“The planning application seeks the recommissioning of Swan Lane Pier, to bring it back into use,” said a spokeswoman.

Vessels of all shapes and sizes would be allowed to use the facilities, including the Ocean Diva, but none would be allowed to permanently moor there, she added.

“We are excited to bring a stylish new event space to London, one that raises the bar for boats on the Thames in terms of its environmental credentials,” Greg Lawson, CEO of the operating company, added last month.

STRANGERS RUSH TO THE AID OF MAN STABBED IN BERMONDSEY

A BERMONDSEY restaurant owner and a decorator rushed to the aid of a stabbed 37-year-old man on Tower Bridge Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The victim suffered life-changing injuries in the knife attack around 2am, but was assisted by heroic strangers, including the manager of the Indian restaurant he collapsed outside.

“We looked outside and we saw this guy, he was shouting and swearing at a minicab,” said Suhel Ahmed, who runs Tower Tandoori.

“He was trying to hail a cab, I thought.

But within a matter of seconds he collapsed on the floor.”

Mr Ahmed had been working inside the restaurant on DIY with a decorator when the pair noticed the victim outside, he said.

“He was bleeding quite heavily, and he kept saying I can’t breathe,” said the restaurateur.

The 31-year-old went back inside the restaurant to get some tissue, which the decorator, called Valentin, used to help staunch the man’s bleeding.

“We put some tissue on the wounds and put pressure on it,” said Mr Ahmed.

“There were two women inside the cab, and they called the ambulance,” added the local businessman, although he called the

A CAMPAIGN to reverse TfL’s decision to slash the number 12 bus service by a third is underway, after the shock move came into effect without any public consultation.

There are now just eight buses an hour running along the 24-hour route from East Dulwich to Oxford Circus after the new timetable came into effect on June 15, adding an extra minute to waiting times between buses.

The number 12 was not included in last year’s public consultation on cuts across the network; a move branded ‘galling’ by local politicians who say there was “no opportunity for residents or representatives to shape the decision”.

All five Labour councillors in Dulwich have written to London’s Deputy Mayor for Transport, Heidi Alexander, urging her to push TfL to backtrack, arguing government cuts are ‘no excuse’ for the lack of consultation.

They say the reduced service will hurt those on low incomes and working

night-shifts the most, explaining: “The Number 12 bus provides a valuable service to our residents at a much lower cost than the train.

“And it provides access to neighbourhoods poorly served by train stations, like the southern end of East Dulwich and the northern end of Camberwell.

“Moreover, it runs 24-hours a day so is particularly important for our residents who work nights and unsociable hours.

“We would oppose a reduction to the service in any circumstances.”

One signatory, Cllr James McAsh who represents Goose Green ward at Southwark Council told the News: "We know that TfL has faced savage cuts from central government but that is no excuse for them to shirk their responsibility to consult properly.

“This cut will disproportionately affect low-earners and those working unsociable hours in the platform economy. We urge Heidi Alexander to reconsider."

TfL have defended the decision,

“He didn’t get stabbed there [on Tower Bridge Road], he probably got stabbed on Grange Road. It all happened quite quickly.”

Police said they were called to reports of the stabbed man at around 2.15am. Medics took over from bystanders to treat the man on the street before taking him to hospital.

No arrests have yet been made, and police inquiries continue.

THE COUNTRY’S first completely free nursery will open in Peckham this September.

A TfL spokesperson told the News: “We’re constantly reviewing the network to ensure that the right amount of buses are running in the right places.

“Over the last five years usage of the route 12 has dropped by nearly 20 per cent, and by matching supply with demand we’re able to keep bus-on-bus congestion to a minimum while reallocating resources to where they are needed most.

“We will work with the council to see how we can use their communication channels better to update residents of route changes.”

Passengers have not been happy with the changes. Taking to twitter, comedian Harun Musho’d asked TfL whether it could ‘spot the errors’ on the map at Camberwell Green bus stop F over a week after the routes had been changed.

“I had the time to kill, waiting for the once frequent 12 bus,” he added.

The Harris Nursery Hub, currently under construction at Marmont Road, will offer 55 free hours of childcare a week to children aged between two and four.

This is nearly double the amount currently offered to parents by the government.

A total of 32 places will be allocated to children where all parents in the household are working, seeking employment or studying full time with those who live closest given priority.

Sabeena Hasan, director of primary education at Harris Federation, said she was ‘thrilled’ to announce the news.

“As anyone with young children will recognise, the cost and availability of quality early years education can make it very difficult for parents to work or study,” she said.

Her thoughts were echoed by the federation’s chief executive, Sir Dan Moynihan, who described the prohibitive cost of childcare as an “outrageous failure of successive governments”.

“This affects many families but hits mothers, young parents and single parents the hardest.

“Amongst wealthy parts of the EU, London has the largest employment gap between men and women of

childbearing age, with women far less likely to be in work.

“By providing free early years education for children in the poorest families, we are not only hoping to help parents get back on their feet but also aiming to eliminate the educational disadvantage suffered by children from the poorest families before they start school.”

The nursery, based at Harris Primary Academy, is the first in a series the Harris Federation aims to open across London, with funding from Urban Exposure Philanthropy covering the costs of the free places – including three healthy, freshly made meals a day.

The nursery will include play-based learning facilities including a sensory room and outdoor play area.

Universal childcare has been described

by Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman as “the missing part of our welfare state”.

Currently, parents of three and four year-old children are able to receive a maximum of thirty free hours a week – but the funding allocated is failing to keep up with rising costs.

It is believed that more than 1,000 SureStart centres, set up by Labour, have now closed across the country.

Applications for places are now open until July 26, with three places earmarked for Harris Federation primary school teachers’ children - meaning 29 places are available.

A MAN from Peckham has been charged by detectives investigating the murder of a pregnant woman, whose baby also died days after being delivered at the crime scene.

Aaron McKenzie, aged 25, from Peckham Park Road, was charged on Sunday, July 14, with the murder of 26-year-old Kelly Mary Fauvrelle, and the manslaughter of her baby son Riley.

Kelly, who was eight months pregnant, was found suffering from stab injuries at home in Raymead Avenue, Thornton Heath, at 3.30am on Saturday, June 29.

She died before she could be taken to hospital. Although her baby was delivered at the scene, he only survived for five days, passing away at 3.10am on Wednesday, July 3.

McKenzie, who has also been charged with one count of possession of an offensive weapon, appeared at Camberwell Magistrates' Court at 10am on Monday, July 15.

Two other men have also been arrested on suspicion of murder; a 37-year-old who has been released without charge, and a 29-year-old bailed until August.

A JustGiving page raising funds to cover the cost of their funerals has raised more than £5,000, with the organisers pledging to donate any remaining money to anti-knife crime causes.

One tribute read: "Kelly Mary did some work experience in our office about five, six years ago.

"A bright girl who we thought would go far. My thoughts are with her family and friends.”

Appeal after SE5 ‘homophobic attack’

A MAN was assaulted in what is believed to have been a homophobic attack in Denmark Hill at the weekend.

Officers were called in the early hours of Sunday morning, shortly after 3am, on July 14, to reports of a man injured near the junction of Denmark Hill and Camberwell Road.

The 29-year-old was hospitalised with a head injury but has now been discharged.

A 19-year-old was arrested at the scene on suspicion of GBH and has since been released under investigation.

Today the Met confirmed the attack is being treated as a homophobic hate crime due to the nature of comments made prior to the assault.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward by calling 101 or Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

50 digital champions needed for academy

THE NEW Hyperoptic Digital Skills Academy is now recruiting 50 volunteers from library staff, residents looking to gain new digital skills, and students seeking to gain valuable CV enhancing skills.

Southwark Council entered into an agreement with Hyperoptic last year, allowing 100,000 homes and businesses in the borough to have access to gigabit full fibre broadband, at no cost to the tax payer.

Hyperoptic will also work with libraries to identify ten residents who use Southwark Council’s free home library service, to provide six hours of in-home training from We are Digital.

This training will be available for residents with disabilities, older people, carers, or those who cannot visit a library.

MAYOR GIVES £50K TO CORNERSTONE

AN ALL-OR-NOTHING drive to get a community art project installed on Bermondsey’s Whites Grounds Estate has been given a major boost after receiving a £50,000 pledge from the Mayor’s office.

If successful, the Cornerstone project will see a striking sculpture being installed on the corner of Whites Grounds and Bermondsey Street, weighing approximately the same as three woolly mammoths.

Pieces of the artwork have been handcarved by residents of the estate, with help from stonemason and artist, Austin

Emery.

“Our project helps overcome the divisive challenges of gentrification and the ever increasing social gap within inner-city multi-cultural areas,” said 48year-old Mr Emery.

“By celebrating our diversity and creating opportunity for life-long established Londoners to work alongside immigrant new-comers, we form bonds based on equality, mutual respect and positive partnerships.”

However, the sculpture - which will be from eight-and-a-half metres long and two-and-a-half metres at its tallest - will only be installed if a fundraising drive reaches £86,000 by August 12.

So far, over 180 people have backed the art project, raising over £60,000.

Announcing all the projects which received funding from Crowdfund London scheme, Mayor Khan said: “Each year Crowdfund London goes from strength to strength. I’m proud to back these 23 fantastic projects which have the potential to make a really positive impact on communities across our city.”

The Cornerstone project has also received £7,500 in funding from Southwark Council.

It comes following a similar art installation by Mr Emery on the nearby Tyers Estate in Bermondsey called The Shared.

ROY LARNER, dubbed the Lion of London Bridge for heroically fighting the terrorists during the June 2017 attack, has allegedly been denied Government compensation for the injuries he sustained.

Roy tackled the jihadis screaming: ‘F*** you I’m Millwall’, getting repeatedly stabbed in arm, neck and chest.

But now the Millwall fan claims he has been told he is not liable for Government compensation for the injuries he sustained during the attack – because of unspent convictions.

As first revealed by the Sun newspaper, a letter sent to Roy by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, allegedly states: “I regret to inform I am unable to make an award as the scheme states an award will be withheld for unspent convictions.”

Roy is appealing the decision, as he has only received suspended sentences since the June atrocity, and did not actually go to jail.

“I felt gutted really, it was a knockback,” he said. “But you’ve just got to keep your head-up and carry on, like with the counselling and the housing.”

The London Bridge hero is currently sofa surfing – and two weeks ago, he told the News that he had still not had one-to-one counselling two years on since the attack.

“We’re appealing the decision to turn me down [for the compensation],” Roy said. “We could still get it under extenuating circumstances.”

“If the attack happened again, I would do exactly the same thing. You don’t do these things for fame or money.”

Earlier this month, Roy revealed that he had been put on the Government’s anti-extremism Prevent programme, over fears he could be radicalised by anti-Islamic extremists.

However, a Home Office spokesperson told the News that the programme was voluntary, and refused to comment on Roy’s individual case.

An inquest concluded into the deaths of the eight innocent victims of the attack last month.

Chief Coroner Mark Lucraft QC concluded that the eight victims of the attack were unlawfully killed – and also criticised the lack of barriers on the bridge, which he said showed “weaknesses in systems for assessing the need for such measures.”

MORE THAN £21,000 has been donated to Southwark TRAs and charities in the last year from film production companies recording hits like Killing Eve across the borough.

Film Fixers was set up in 2007 to manage film requests across local authorities including Southwark, and make sure the large-scale films and TV shows filmed in the borough - like the BBC America smash-hit Killing Eve give back to the community.

In episode four of series two of the BBC America smash hit, Eve Polastri enjoys some late-night fried chicken and flirtation with her security services colleague outside Jenny’s café in Peckham Rye station.

Other productions to have filmed on location in Southwark Bohemian Rhapsody, Men in Black, Rocketman, Gangs of London and Netflix’s The Crown.

Residents’ associations receive £21,000 from hit TV shows and films

have an agreement in place with residents before recording, including donations to residents’ associations and good causes as a goodwill gesture.

Silverlock Estate TRA benefitted from funds from the production companies behind Top Boy, The Capture and Gangs of London.

Chair Gill Davis said: “The donations play a big part us being able to provide three very popular and totally free ‘Family Fun Days’ for the whole community including free food and entertainment. We are also able to hold coffee mornings in the community hall.”

Meanwhile, Trinity and Newington Estate, which welcomed filming teams for Ironbark and Giri Haji, used their donations cover a range of free community events including Christmas carols with mince pies and mulled wine.

Living Bankside has used their funding to put on football sessions for kids, digital support for older people and a series of fetes including Christmas, Ramadan and St George’s Day celebrations.

Executive chair Amir Eden described these donations as playing a ‘fundamental role in promoting community cohesion in the last few

years.

“To date we have hosted over 5,000 people at our events.”

Cllr Rebecca Lury, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Equalities and Communities at Southwark Council said: “We all love spotting London landmarks in films and on TV, and here in Southwark we host many production companies, and their stars.

“But in addition to this, we work very hard alongside FilmFixer, to make sure that all of the big productions give back to our local communities, be that through funding local projects or by creating exciting opportunities for young people.”

This work is all the more important given not everyone has always been happy with how landmarks and estates including Aylesbury and Heygate - have been portrayed on the big and small screen, with council rules on the types of filming requests accepted tightened up in 2012 after residents complained too often their homes were made to look like crime-ridden sink estates.

As well as funding, FilmFixers also help find work experience and employment opportunities for young people on set including work as runners or marshals.

Five young people to recently join the industry started out with work experience on-set in productions filmed in Southwark, including Megan Bussey (pictured right), a London College of Communication film student who gained paid work as a marshall on the set of Gangs of London with Sue’s help.

Megan said: “Working on Gangs of London was a great experience for the start of my career as it introduced me to new people and gave me an insight into a professional set.

“The crew were lovely and very accommodating to all my questions.

AN SE1 dealer who supplied chemsex drugs to notorious Grindr serial killer Stephen Port has been found guilty of murdering a father with the very same substance.

Gerald Matovu, of Great Guildford Street, and his boyfriend used dating apps such as Grindr to target men to drug, rob and sometimes sexually assault them.

In a ‘well-rehearsed’ plan, 26-year-old Matovu and his boyfriend, Brandon Dunbar, 24, would drug the majority of their victims with GBL to unconsciousness, before stealing their possessions and bank cards.

The court heard that Matovu and Dunbar targeted twelve gay men through apps like Grindr over a 19month period.

But one of the men targeted, 52-yearold HR executive Eric Michels, was killed by Matovu after being given a fatal dose of the chemsex drug.

Matovu met Mr Michels through Grindr and went to the victim’s house in Chessington in August last year for sex.

Shockingly, as he lay dead or dying, the murderer raided his address of his belongings – leaving the victim’s body to be discovered the following day by family members.

The jury were not informed that Matovu had supplied drugs to infamous Grindr serial killer Stephen Port, of Barking, who is serving a life term for drugging, raping and murdering four men between 2014 and 2015, before dumping their bodies near to his home.

Following Port’s trial in 2016, Matovu had pleaded guilty to supplying him with mephedrone and GHB, but denied knowing what Port was doing with the substances.

Only three days after he murdered Mr Michels in his home, Matovu along with Dunbar targeted another man to rob at Dunbar’s flat.

The 27-year-old victim was greeted

by Matovu at the flat, before having sex with Dunbar.

He was given a drink which had been laced with ‘G’, and while disorientated, Matovu took photos of his bank-card and driving licence.

At around 11pm, the court heard how victim ‘number 12’ was sexually assaulted by Dunbar with a syringe.

When he was no longer of use to the pair, they dragged him naked onto the street and abandoned him next to rubbish bags.

Police investigating the circumstances of Mr Michels’ death arrived at the East London flat on August 20 to find police dealing with the discovery of Victim 12 by passers-by outside the address.

“Attending officers were quickly able to join those two events together, and inquiries then revealed a whole host of other victims,” said Detective Inspector Mark Richards.

“Matovu and Dunbar had done very little to cover their tracks, their only focus moving onto their next victim and what else they could steal.

“There is every chance there are more victims out there – please have the confidence to come forward and report this, or any similar crime to us.”

son, Sam, spoke of his distress at the lies the sick killer – who denied murder had told about his father in a bid to clear his name.

“On multiple occasions while giving evidence, Mr Matovu turned to us and grinned,” he said. “I am so proud of my father and I will continue to be until I die.

“He made such an impact on my life that can never be forgotten. He deserves nothing but justice for what happened to him last year.”

Matovu was found guilty on Monday, July 15 of murdering Mr Michels at the Old Bailey. He had denied the murder claiming Mr Michels’ took his own GHB willingly. He was also found guilty on multiple counts of administering a poison with intent to endanger life, assault charges, fraud and theft.

His boyfriend Dunbar was found guilty of charges of adminstering a noxious substance, as well as theft, fraud and assault charges.

Sentencing takes place on Thursday, September 5.

Timeline of the murder

On August 16, 2018, Eric Michels (Victim 11) told his son he was going for a night out in central London. He visited various bars before contacting Matovu via Grindr around midnight.

Mr Michels arranged to meet him in Great Guildford Street before they took a cab back to Mr Michel’s home in Bolton Road, Chessington.

Around 06:00hrs Mr Michels’ son, Sam, was awoken by Matovu entering his room and claiming he was searching for the bathroom.

At 06:47hrs Matovu photographed Mr Michels’ bank cards and other items – the prosecution said the victim was either dead or unconscious at that time as he had been given GBL by Matovu.

At around 09:00hrs, Sam left the house.

At 11:00hrs Matovu left Mr Michels’ house in a cab, taking a suitcase belonging to the victim. He also had bank cards and other items.

Around 19:25hrs, Mr Michels’ daughter sent a text inviting him for dinner.

When there was no reply she sent a follow-up text the following day (Saturday, 18 August 2018).

The reply came as “hello hun im a little busy talk soon”. This was unlike him and she tried to call but an unknown male answered – the call was later traced to the area of Matovu’s address.

The alarm was raised after family members then visited Mr Michels’ address later that same day and found his body. He had been dead for several hours.

The proposal, revealed in its ‘Cycling Parking Implementation Plan’ would see more of the Santander docking stations at the station, emulating the example of Waterloo.

“The Santander Cycles docking station at Waterloo station is the busiest of the network and supports 1,300 cycle trips every day,” say the plans.

“We will work with boroughs and Network Rail to replicate this success elsewhere, starting with London Bridge and Liverpool Street stations.”

The move would allow more commuters to use the bike hire scheme, which the quango says is already popular with rail passengers.

Search for victim of Walworth ‘stabbing’

A REPORTED stabbing in Walworth Road left officers baffled last week after the victim made a quick exit.

A call was put into the Met at 5.56pm on Wednesday, July 10, reporting a stabbing inside a shop on Rodney Road.

When police arrived at the scene, all parties involved had left and, despite an extensive search, no trace of a victim was found. Anyone with information should call 101.

Gipsy Hill appeal for bleeding man

A MAN who was seen bleeding on a bus travelling toward Crystal Palace has been urged by police to come forward after witnesses claimed he told them he had been stabbed.

Witnesses said last Thursday, July 11, at around 9 pm, a man got off the number 3 bus at Gispy Hill who appeared to be bleeding.

As he left the bus he told a passerby that he had been stabbed and was going to a friend's house for help.

The man, who was between 30 and 40, around 5 ft 7, and wearing dark jeans and a baseball cap, got off the bus at Gispy Hill. He was last seen walking into the Salter's Hill entrance to Norwood Park. Officers have been unable to locate the man, and say he did not seek medical treatment. Anyone with information should call 101.

FIFTY BUDDING market traders from schools across Southwark had the chance to sell their own homegrown produce at Borough Market this month.

After ringing the bell to open the special sale on Thursday, July 4, kids from eleven primary schools became market traders for the day, with all proceeds made donated to FareShare; a charity that helps combat food poverty.

FareShare makes sure spare, in date and good quality food that may otherwise be thrown away is rescued and given to people who need it. Just £1 can provide four meals to vulnerable families struggling to make ends meet.

The young marketeers scheme has, to date, seen more than 7,000 primary-aged children sell fruit and veg grown at 58 different schools.

Christine Elliott, Borough Market's chair of trustees, said: “A commitment to sustainability is at the heart of what Borough Market believes in.

"By working with children we want to encourage the next generation to connect with their food, to enjoy growing their own produce, to eat with the seasons and ultimately, to make informed choices when it comes to what they put on their plate.

THE LONDON Fire Brigade needs additional adult volunteers to help run an expanded their fire cadet scheme.

This comes as a result of City Hall investing £1.1 million into the fire cadets youth programme.

This will help set fire cadet unites in every borough with the ability to welcome 500 youths into the

programme each year.

This investment is part of the Mayor’s ongoing commitment to provide young people with constructive activities. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “It’s been great to see the fantastic work that the London Fire Brigade is doing with young people through its Fire Cadets programme.

"Schemes like this play an important role in the lives of young Londoners but they can’t survive without the support of the community.

A BOLD, empowering musical about women’s boxing is to premiere in Peckham's new theatre this August from 29th to 31th.

'Fight Like A Girl,' takes inspiration from the remarkable rise of women’s boxing in 2012, when Nicola Adams became the first woman to win an Olympic Gold Medal for boxing.

The musical draws on accounts from young female boxers and provides a drama that questions long-held gender and identity stereotypes and explores what it means to be a woman.

“Fight Like A Girl is a highlycharged, emotional, fast-paced rollercoaster of a musical that takes its inspiration from the world of women’s boxing," says director Nick Stimson.

Donning tiaras and tricorn for swimathon!

PARENTS AND babies will be donning their tiaras and tricorn hats during their weekly swimming classes to raise money for the charity Tommy’s.

Together with 50,000 water babies from across the country, they are aiming to raise £1,000,000 to help fund Tommy’s research into miscarriage, stillbirth, and premature birth.

In the UK, it is estimated that one in four pregnancies end in loss during pregnancy or birth.

causes and treatments for miscarriage, stillbirth, and premature birth.

Sarah Ashton, who runs the Water Babies London South East franchise, which holds swimming lessons for youngsters across Southwark, said: “At Water Babies South East London, we are all really excited to be taking part in the Tommy’s Splashathon.

"We are aiming to raise £1,000,000.

"Locally we are going to continue to give our swimmers a really exciting lesson whilst fundraising to save other babies’ lives.”

The charity's chief executive, Jane Brewin, thanked the Water Babies team for supporting their work over the last thirteen years.

“Splashathon is a great way for mums and dads to involve their little ones in a good cause.

"Tommy’s relies on the generosity and hard work of its supporters; Water Babies and their clients have supported Tommy’s for thirteen years helping us to pioneer research to make pregnancy and birth safer for mums and babies.

A GROUP of Bermondsey mums are planning to peacefully blockade a 36-hour concrete pour for the Thames Super Sewer in protest at the impact on their children.

A continuous concrete pour is needed at Tideway’s worksite at Chambers Wharf to reinforce the underground structures of the £4.2billion project.

However, the pour is likely to face disruption at the hands of local mothers living by the site, in a row over the work’s impact on their children’s health.

Mum-of-four and Chambers Way resident, Heather Mulkerrins, who has helped organise the demo said: “I want Tideway to know we’re serious, we’re not joking – this is going ahead.”

Up to fifteen mothers have pledged to blockade the one entrance and exit gate to where the concrete pour is taking place, preventing as manty as 300 lorries from gaining access on Friday morning.

The demo has been sparked in part because of respite and mitigation measures given to those facing the worksite, but not those living facing away from it.

“My place doesn’t face the site, so they’re saying we’re not affected. But just because we don’t face it doesn’t mean our children aren’t affected,”

RESIDENTS HAVE won a battle to have planning permission for a block of Rotherhithe flats quashed, after it was controversially approved without going to committee.

A backlash was sparked by officerapproved plans for the former Clipper pub, on Rotherhithe Street, with over 400 locals signing a petition against the ‘eye-sore’ scheme, which would have seen six two-bed flats being created.

In April, ward councillor for the area, Jane Salmon, had also hit out at the council’s handling of the application, saying it had been unfairly refused from being sent to committee, a claim the council denied.

Now three residents have forced the planning permission to be revoked in a legal challenge at their own time and expense - because the council “failed to have regard for a relevant policy consideration, namely density.”

Buildings can be above-density if the building’s design is ‘exemplary’ – but the planning officer’s report made no reference to density at all, or the criteria for exemplary design, the ruling found.

only way to challenge it is to have a judicial review,” said Sky Bone, one of the claimants.

“We spent hundreds of hours on challenging this, it’s been really gruelling for us.” The trio had only six weeks to prepare their case after the plans were approved.

“I don’t think anyone expected us to get it together to be able to challenge it,” added another of three claimants, James Willasey-Wilsey.

“There’s a high level of asymmetry between the developer and the community in terms of power and information,” he said.

“It feels like the system is weighted

against you. I think we’re quite upset that it had to come to this.”

Council authorities must now pay the costs to the three claimants of launching the review, the ruling states.

Cllr Johnson Situ, who holds the cabinet’s planning portfolio, said the council had decided not to contest the bid to have the permission quashed after the residents’ legal challenge was received.

“The council accepted that the information about the density of the flats was not included in the report,” he said.

He added it did not originally go to committee because that would require to ward representatives to ‘call-in’ the

scheme.

A plan had been previously approved for a different scheme on the site, which those signing the petition state would have mirrored nearby warehouses and was “designed to contribute to and not damage the local heritage.”

The residents’ successful efforts now means that the latest plans would now need to be considered publicly, which ward councillor Jane Salmon said she was “delighted” by.

The developer Designer London Developments Ltd, named as an interested party in the judicial review, had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publication.

Two of her children have respiratory problems, she added, which would be negatively impacted by any pollution from the concrete pour.

A Tideway spokesperson said the work was needed to stop sewage pollution in the Thames and that it works with the community to minimise disruption.

“At the start of our project, an Independent Compensation Panel was established to enable residents living near our sites to apply for mitigation and support if they felt they were adversely affected by the work involved,” said the spokesman.

“The panel is formed of independent experts ranging from health professionals to noise specialists, and each decision is based on an individual’s circumstances – including proximity of their home to the site, health and other personal circumstances.”

The panel wouldn’t comment on individual cases, he added.

As the News has reported, Chambers Wharf campaigners have previously launched legal action over the super-sewer construction, arguing residents’ needs for mitigation from noise and pollution had not been sufficiently addressed.

Construction of the major 16-mile tunnel is due to be completed by 2024.

DURING THE second phase of Elephant Park's development, independent food and beverage, leisure and retail units from the Southwark area are invited to contribute, according to Lendlease UK. There are 16 new units available that total a whopping 37,000 sq ft across two separate areas of the development.

Units will be offered in Ash Avenue which will open directly onto a new park and green space, and in the New Kent Road and Chatteris Quarter areas of the development.

THIS WEEK we report that an impressive piece of art dedicated to Only Fools and Horses appeared in Burgess Park before being rapidly covered up.

‘Welcome to Peckham’ the graffiti read, alongside Del Boy, Rodney and Grandad, before it was mysteriously painted over. The mural was located in “Burgess Park, in Peckham, Zone 1” said its artist as he unveiled the piece.

There was just one flaw though: the mural in Burgess Park was actually in Camberwell, not Peckham, one resident living nearby pointed out on Twitter.

And none of Peckham’s stations are in Zone 1. As Del Boy might have said: you dozy old twonk!

NLY TWO weeks on from reporting that he had been placed on a Government counter-extremism programme, Roy Larner the ‘Lion of London Bridge’, features in this paper again.

Readers will know that heroic Roy charged the terrorist jihadis, screaming ‘F*** you I’m Millwall’, sustaining serious stab wounds to the chest, arm and neck in the process.

Now Roy has revealed that he is allegedly not eligible for Government compensation for those serious injuries sustained in the attack – as the scheme precludes paying those with unspent convictions.

He is the first to admit that he has sometimes been on the wrong side of the law. Earlier this month, he told this paper: “I’m not a perfect person, I’ve been in trouble in the past.”

Among them are suspended sentences since the June 2017 attack for racially aggravated common assault and for breaching a restraint order.

But equally, Mr Larner seems sincere in wanting to get his life back on track. “It’s going to take some time to get back to normal”, he also told us earlier this month.

Two years on from the atrocity, he is still sofa surfing and says he has not had a one-to-one counselling session. He struggles with PTSD and says his wounded shoulder means he cannot work.

Now added to that, he will also not receive compensation for those injuries.

Whatever his past misdeeds, readers will no doubt feel that Roy has not been given the treatment befitting of a hero who risked his life.

We need more buses if we are ever going to cut emissions and be serious on tackling climate change

uts to the number 12 will no doubt be a blow to civil servants and the odd politician working in Westminster. But it’s the night shift workers and NHS staff who will be particularly affected – as will older people and those struggling financially; unable to afford train travel.

It’s a lovely route connecting some of the best scenes Southwark has to offer, with tourist hotspots of Parliament Square, Horseguards Parade, Picadilly and Oxford Circus via St Thomas’.

TfL’s funding from central government – like many vital services – has been cut.

But so many of these cost saving measures are just building up problems for the medium to long-term.

At a time when we are becoming increasingly aware of cost filthy air pollution to our health service, educational prospects and even fertility, changing timetables to have even fewer bus services running is completely nonsensical.

Especially in a borough that has declared a climate emergency – effectively putting the council at odds with City Hall and central government.

The fact so many people living in zones 2 and 3 people feel they cannot get around properly without a car is a damning indictment on our continued transport chaos.

It is truly incredible to look back and see that we once had trams, trolleybuses, and train lines all over the country – modes of transport we now realise are clean, green and affordable.

We’re the country that invented the first locomotive and tube, and yet here we are, choked with traffic while commuters complain of creaking, prohibitively expensive rail services.

Given the climate emergency we face, it is imperative that everyone does their bit to help reduce our collective carbon footprint.

But what incentive is there to cut down on car use if other alternatives aren’t there?

Why should the poorest people in Southwark who can’t just jump on a train or catch a quick cab – be stuck with longer, more unreliable bus commutes when they are more likely to work zero-contract, fixed hours and struggle to afford their travel card to begin with. And, to add insult to injury, they’re paying for a worse service despite making the eco-friendly choice.

This week climate change activists from Extinction Rebellion are out in force across London and four other cities in the UK. They believe political change has been far too slow to come – and only a Citizens Assembly free from vested interests and party politics can achieve the kind of decision-making we need to truly cut greenhouse gases and transform our city.

Given that just weeks after the new ULEZ was introduced, a key bus service has been cut without any public consultation, regardless of whether you’re an eco-warrior or not, it seems like Extinction Rebellion has a point.

PLANS TO EXTEND OLD VIC THEATRE

THE OLD Vic theatre has proposed creating a £12m ‘Annex’ to open up theatre opportunities to the local community in partnership with Southwark and Lambeth councils.

The proposal is for a funding arrangement which would see the two boroughs loan the theatre around £3.75m each towards the £12m total.

Southwark’s town hall officials were due to consider the loan on Tuesday (July 16) while Lambeth will discuss a similar loan on July 22.

A MEMORIAL for a homeless woman who lived in an underpass near Forest Hill station will be held later this month, after hundreds of people raised more than £6,000 in just a few days after her untimely death.

The service, for Stefania - an Italian woman struggling with drug addiction who died two weeks ago after complications following surgery – will be held on Saturday, July 20, at Syndenham School.

“Southwark has a long-standing and positive relationship with The Old Vic, which has helped many young people in Southwark gain unique and valuable insight into the world of theatre,” said Cllr Rebecca Lury, cabinet member for culture.

“This exciting arrangement with The Old Vic is just one part of this; delivering jobs, skills and training for our young people, and opening up the world of culture to a wider and more diverse group of people.”

The Annex will include a ‘learning centre’ for nearby schools and colleges,

a library of plays freely available and back of house space for The Old Vic’s staff and companies.

The extension would double the amount of people benefiting from the institution’s community outreach and educational work, it hopes.

It would also drive more people to attend an on-site café, the theatre said, meaning more revenue streams for the institution.

It would be a “once in a generation” opportunity for the theatre and the area, said Old Vic Executive Director, Kate Varah.

Under the terms of the loans, yet to be greenlit, the Old Vic would fundraise to repay the loan over a 10-year period through philanthropic support.

The 17-year-old man was charged with murder at Lewisham Police station on Wednesday and was remanded in custody, and was due to appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (July 11).

Eighteen-year-old McCaulay was found suffering stab injuries on Tiverton Street, on the Rockingham Estate at around 9.30pm on Sunday, May 5.

He was rushed to hospital, but sadly died just over an hour later of his wounds. A post-mortem gave the cause of his death as a stab wound to the left thigh.

FIRST SEX CLINIC FOR TRANSGENDER PEOPLE IS HAILED A HUGE SUCCESS

THE FIRST sexual health service specially designed for transgender people in south London has been overwhelmingly praised by patients, who say the Camberwell clinic is ‘absolutely vital’.

Since opening in April the new Caldecot Centre, run in a partnership between King’s College Hospital and trans health and wellbeing support service cliniQ, has seen more than 50 visitors attend for specialist treatment and support.

Services offered on site include sexual health testing, PrEP treatment, contraception, hormone level monitoring and injections and advice and counselling - including support for victims of hate crime or sexual assault, and advice on housing. The clinic also offers cervical smear tests.

Medics say the response to the joined-up service has been ‘really positive’, with one visitor, twentyfour-year-old Evren Filgate, saying:

“With long waiting times for the specialist gender clinics, a lack of training for GPs and hospitals, a general lack of understanding of trans health combined with difficulties accessing healthcare, cliniQ at King’s as a walk-in clinic accessible to all trans people provides dignified, non-judgemental care for myself and my friends.

“Without cliniQ I would not have been able to access life-saving care many times over.

“Many trans people I have spoken to agree that cliniQ is absolutely vital to trans people in south London and its importance cannot be overstated.”

Trans people are disproportionately affected by mental and physical health problems.

To tackle this, in addition to providing specialist support, doctors at King’s are also developing new training tools to help improve care across the health service.

The walk-in clinic is held Tuesday from 4pm to 7pm at the Caldecot Centre Caldecot Road, off Denmark Hill, SE5 9RS.

SINGLE FATHERS will soon have dedicated support in Southwark as a specialist charity launches a hub at Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre.

Dads House, a charity which gives support, advice and accommodation to single dads, recently received the Points of Light award from Prime Minister Theresa May in recognition of the impact they have made to their community.

It's a unique service the charity's founder hopes to replicate across the country.

“It’s important that single fathers have a place they can come with no judgement, just to have a cup of tea and a chat,” said Dads House founder William McGranaghan, 55.

“We need a support network there for dads, the rise in homelessness in London is just incredible - 72% of men’s homelessness is due to broken relationships, and often those men are fathers.”

As well as a place to talk and have a cup of tea, the Dads House centre at Elephant & Castle will offer a number of services including a food bank, cooking classes, breakfast clubs and fun social activities.

Dads House was set up in 2008 after Mr McGranaghan became a single father to his one-year-old son. After he lost his job due to lack of flexible working hours, he realised there was no support network for men in his situation.

“I didn’t know what to do, something that I didn’t want to ask for was help, I didn’t want to feel like a failure,” he told the News.

In 2017 Dads House helped provide accommodation for 66 fathers. Mr McGranaghan said the introduction of universal credit had been a 'killer' when it came to housing problems. As the News has reported, Southwark Council's own data shows rising rent debt and food bank use after the benefits change.

FIONA PHILIPS and her film crew visited Harris Academy in Peckham, as charity ambassador for People’s Postcode Lottery, to highlight the work of Greenhouse Sports.

Greenhouse Sports works to improve the confidence and life-skills of disadvantaged young people and is having a positive impact on their attendance at school and performance in the classroom.

During her visit, Fiona watched pupils from Harris Academy take part in one of their frequent basketball sessions, led by head coach, Jago StreeteCampbell.

The students told Fiona that being active and involved in sport had boosted their confidence and encouraged them to work hard and stay out of trouble.

The work of charities such as Greenhouse Sports is seen as vital

during a time where public concerns about the impact of violence and crime could have on young people in London.

Greenhouse Sports uses mentoring as well as sports coaching to engage with young people.

Greenhouse Sports builds partnerships with schools to provide opportunities to those who may be disengaged, vulnerable or facing disadvantages.

Fiona Phillips said, “The work that Greenhouse Sports coaches like Jago do in schools around London makes a huge difference to young people’s lives.

"I saw first-hand how much fun the kids had playing basketball, but also how participating in sports helps them spend their time after school productively.

"It’s fantastic that support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery is helping fund these important school programmes.”

More than £1.7 million has been raised for Greenhouse Sports. Funds

Mr McGranaghan is optimistic after receiving the award that the charity can grow and help more people - especially with its new base at the Elephant.

“In London alone there are 20,000 dads who are the main carers for their children and this number is rising," he

“We can’t wait to open our doors at the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre and continue bringing together dads to share their experiences and receive practical and emotional support.“ He hopes their office will open in early August and urges anyone who needs or can offer support to visit their website: dadshouse.org.uk

One foot in the gallery: Art built by the Community

W

hen artists start talking about their work in words that mean nothing to me my face usually displays enough information for them to see I think them a tad pompous, writes Michael Holland.

WITH A breath-taking cricket match involving England, the Men’s Final at Wimbledon, England’s women’s team netball in an international tournament and another Lewis Hamilton Grand Prix win all happening, there was still only one place to be on Super Sunday and that was Southwark Park Galleries for the opening of

Dog Show, an exhibition with none of the elitism that comes with the above sports, but an art show for everyone and their dog, writes Michael Holland.

Literally. Southwark Park Galleries explicitly want dogs to visit and have a doggy good time.

For the next few weeks both galleries will be a Pooch Paradise as Dog Show

That meant building his huge artworks from individual one foot square canvases, like tiles or bricks, with the finished pieces resulting in veritable works of genius.

Kitson always drew cartoons as a kid so it was no surprise that he eventually went to art school, but this didn’t work out too well and ended after a foundation course. But the love of art never left and at some point in his life he once again took up the brushes. And that was a bonus for all of us.

Another bonus is that in his current exhibition, Machines For Living In, visitors can paint their own one foot square canvas to add to an artwork that will be completed while the show is running, and will be sold at the same price as the artist’s - £120 per sq.ft. How great is that?

While I was there a lady, who said she loves art but has no technical skills, was soon - with Kitson’s assistance - mixing colours and laying on paint with a trowel and brush to produce the exhibition’s first piece of art that has come from the community and not the Block H of the local dog pound.

And there were some real beauties on display, the dogs were attracting as much attention as the artwork with humans complimenting other humans’ pets, and the dogs showing their appreciation by sniffing at anything in sight.

In the Dilston Grove gallery a number of videos were being screened. One showed two people giving theatrical performances for dogs in their homes, with the animal audience initially looking alarmed and then indifferent.

But if two strangers were acting odd in my home I’d be the same. Another video had an owner give his dog a spelling lesson, and at the far end on a large screen Martin Creed’s Work No. 670, Orson and Sparky, 2007 played.

Other dog art lined the walls.

In the main gallery I thought I’d crashed a Battersea Dogs’ Home reunion party. I recognised a Basset Hound but the remainder seemed to be

artist. I have since heard that she went back with her sister where they created another 2 sq. ft of work!

Rod Kitson is a breath of fresh air in the art world, there’s no pretentiousness with him. He lives in his studio above a former pub on the Deptford-Rotherhithe border and treats his work as a job and not a raison d’être. He sees it as a skill learnt and not something people are born with, which I totally agree with.

And because he is willing to sit and guide beginners through their initial fear, he wants all budding artists to go in and have a go at creating art with him If the fear is too strong, still go because the art that you will see there is quite amazing: 3D portraits that change depending on where you stand, the one foot square works that form intricate Persian carpets, a lifesize replica of his studio, views from a skylight, and all created by painting one canvas a day for as long as it took each work to complete. And the exhibition will be growing as more and more people go along to add their own unique touch to it. But do not be fooled by Mr Kitson’s approach, he is no cowboy builder but an artist with something very special about him and about his art.

of the modern mongrel type; funny breeds such as Peke-a-doodle and Wire Haired Sausage Dog, but even with the interbreeding they all knew how to behave in an art gallery. Not so their owners who stood right in front of the artworks and discussed the merits of Pedigree Chum!

Highlights of the show for me was David Shrigley’s Hello There video and the stuffed animals that lay around both galleries looking as comfortable as their real counterparts. But the stars really were the dogs that visited and enjoyed their very own Dog Show.

Take yourself and your dog along. You won’t regret it.

Pelagia’s home.

Melly Still’s direction and Rona Munro’s adaptation combined have created a production that is heartfelt and whimsical at the same time. Madison Clare is fantastic as the fiery, headstrong proto-feminist Pelagia and is matched perfectly by her father, Dr Iannis’ nostalgic warmth, played by Joseph Long. Luisa Guerreiro and Elizabeth Mary Williams spend the majority of their evening as a goat and a pine marten respectively and their comic yet fluid incarnations of each animal are wonderful.

The story here is far too full and sprawling to expect a realistic set but Mayou Trikerioti’s high hanging, enormous crumpled metal sheets create an abstract beauty that transforms from rippling Ionian Sea to the blood red remains of war.

This is a hefty, ambitious book to adapt, and the two and a half hour run time, while impressive, all things considered is still just too long. The story being told is too big to contain and it seems that the main casualty of this is the eponymous Captain who only appears properly in the second half. While Alex Mugnaini does a solid job with the material provided, giving a soulful and sweet performance, ultimately his relationship with Pelagia just doesn’t carry enough weight or poignancy to carry the narrative through to the end.

Bestselling book loses poignancy on stage HAVING RECENTLY completed a successful UK tour, Rona Munro’s adaptation of Louis De Bernières' Captain Corelli’s Mandolin has opened at the Harold Pinter Theatre for nine weeks across the summer, writes Rosie O’Connell.

First published in 1994 the WW2 epic romance novel was a visceral phenomenon, selling millions. The 2001 Nicolas Cage and Penelope Cruz movie, however, was a misfire that failed to lend credulity to the romance at the heart of the story, something that I’m not

convinced this production has managed to combat completely.

How a mustard spoon revealed story of one of London’s largest asylums

ne warm evening in June 2011, Liz Sibthorpe, a resident of Camberwell’s Sceaux Gardens estate, made a rather unusual discovery.

Then aged 62, Liz had been picking mulberries in an overgrown garden behind the estate’s Mistral House.

Developers had been working to turn adjacent buildings into student accommodation for the University of Arts London, and had left an excavated mound of dirt.

As she circled past the mound near an open drain cover on the hunt for more mulberries, something caught her attention.

“On the top, I saw there was something glinting out of the corner of my eye,” says Liz. It was a tiny little 7cm mustard spoon, emblazoned with the initials CH on the handle.

Unknown to Liz at the time, the mysterious CH stood for ‘Camberwell House’ – the Victorian-era ‘lunatic asylum’ which had stood on the grounds of Sceaux Gardens for over a century, until closing in 1955.

The intriguing find was the first of many objects revealing the history of Camberwell House Lunatic Asylum, among London’s largest in its time - and the lives of those who found themselves inside.

Camberwell House opened its doors in 1846, spread across three large houses on Peckham Road.

It was licensed to accommodate 70 male and 80 female paupers, and twelve private

Contrary to our mental image of a Victorian-era psychiatric hospital, the facility was surprisingly progressive for its time.

The grounds were vast, and unusually for the era, men and women patients were allowed to mix in them.

Concerts were held in a theatre inside the hospital; every year, a home would be rented on the coast for patients to enjoy a seaside holiday.

At its peak, the hospital had 20 acres of grounds, flower beds, a vegetable garden, badminton courts and a bowling green.

The treatments, too, were surprisingly advanced for the time, despite what we may think of them now.

Camberwell House offered occupational therapy, shock treatment, modified insulin treatments. Movement through the use of callisthenics was also encouraged.

By 1859, the asylum had over three hundred inmates. Nearly twenty years later it was licensed as the second largest asylum in London, behind Grove Hall in Bow.

By this point, the proprietors had built cottages in the large park-like grounds to give some patients privacy, according to their social status and illness.

According to their social status, however, hints that not all patients might have received as high a quality of care at the hospital.

“For the poorer people who went there, it wasn’t so good. It could’ve been a bit like a prison for them,” says Liz. Next-door on the corner of Havil Street stood a workhouse in the hospital’s founding years.

Through her research, Liz suspects that some of the paupers came from the workhouse and into the hospital – yet did not survive many months in the asylum, already being quite physically weak on arrival.

Methodically working her way through the pile and other areas being dug up on the estate, Liz uncovered many other treasures: shards of thick blue-and-white pottery which also spelled out Camberwell House; keys for lockers, either for patients or staff; half-crowns, shillings, pennies, farthings.

They broadly fall into two categories, she says: domestic and leisure.

Among the domestic items are several small buttons, possibly from a nurse’s uniform.

One theory is that they could have been confiscated from women patients – alongside suspender straps – to prevent suicide attempts. Another is that they could’ve belonged to the Housekeeper, for sewing repairs.

One of the other finds is a tiny, china doll, only 7cm tall. It is naked, wearing only a bonnet, and the face is missing much of its features. Its arms are gone.

The doll, the researcher later discovered, is a ‘Frozen Charlotte’ – a specific type of figurine popular between 1850 and 1920.

A well-known folk’s tale of the mid1800s inspired the doll, giving the cautionary example of frozen Charlotte: a young woman who had neglected sensible clothing for the dictates of fashion – and had frozen to death.

While a doll might initially point to children, Liz uncovered no evidence that there were children patients at Camberwell House.

It could be that it was left behind from a child visiting a relative inside the hospital.

“All the objects tell a story,” Liz says.

“But the most poignant are these [wedding] rings. They’re very cheap.

“None of them were gold, and made of a poor-quality metal. But they meant something to someone. I found that quite sad, really.”

Like the buttons, they too might have been removed from patients for safety, or perhaps simply left in storage after its owner died.

Curiously, many of the artefacts were

found by the Sceaux Gardens resident in the same area, and some were fire damaged.

How could so many disparate items come to be so close together, and what had caused the burns?

During the war, high explosive bombs had been dropped on the grounds of Camberwell House. They likely caused a blaze which damaged the rooms in which the objects were held.

Perhaps they even dropped below floor level and got into the drains, where they were swept along for decades, she speculates. The asylum eventually shutup-shop in 1955.

Some of the hospital’s buildings were used as council offices, while the Sceaux Gardens estate was built on the institution’s grounds on the north side of Peckham Road.

The estate resident donated her initial hoard to the borough by depositing them with the Cuming Museum in Walworth in August 2011.

The museum was hit by a fire in March 2013, severely damaging much of its galleries.

“This time it was accidental, rather than an act of war,” she says. She had hoped they had survived, as they were not out on display at the time.

In 2017, that hope came true. The initial haul of objects were found in the museum’s storage, uncatalogued – but yet safe and sound, where they remain to this day.

In future, the 70-year-old hopes they might yet be put on display again – giving others the chance to learn what a tiny mustard spoon can tell us about the history of Camberwell House Lunatic Asylum.

FISHER BOSS Allan Fenn has revealed he doesn’t have a playing budget this season – and said he turned down a paid job elsewhere because of the Rotherhithe club’s allure.

Fenn took over from Dean Harrison this summer, after Fisher finished third in the SCEFL Premier Division last season.

Fenn also revealed he was told he would have all but three of last season’s squad to work with, only for just three to remain.

That has meant a huge rebuilding job at St Paul’s, where Fenn handed some trialists the chance to impress last Friday in Rotherhithe against a Millwall XI, which ended in a 3-0

win for a visiting side that boasted players who have already played senior games for the Lions in preseason.

Fenn has lost stalwarts such as Richie Hamill this summer, though top-scoring midfielder Rob Brown has stayed and will be captain next season.

“The biggest issue I’ve had since I took over was who’s staying, and I was told seventeen out of 20. And only three have stayed,” Fenn told the News.

“They’ve gone for money, they’ve gone for other managers, they’ve gone for whatever reason. I’ve had to completely rebuild.

“Out of the 22 [Friday night] I’ve got fourteen, fifteen [for next season].

We’re getting there.

“My opinion is if you’re going to earn 20 quid a week, 30 quid a week, and you rely on it, then you’ve got to change your lifestyle. It should be for

a curry, it should be for a couple of beers after the game.

“We’ve got no budget at all, everyone here is playing for nothing.

They’re playing because they want to come here for me and my management team, and also because of the name of Fisher.

“I’ve got meetings with potential sponsors. Anything that comes into the pot will go straight into the playing budget.”

Asked if not for financial gain what attracted Fenn to Rotherhithe, he replied: “The name of Fisher. If you’re in football then you know the name Fisher. It’s got a great history.”

He added: “The people over here are proper football people and I’ve always appreciated the people of Bermondsey. It’s a great community and that’s what really attracted me to the club, because of the board, because of the fans. It’s a great basis from which to push forward.

“When I was a kid I used to train with Millwal boys in Suffolk Park. I took a lot of lessons off Terry Hurlock, Les Briley. I’ve got an affiliation with Millwall – and I don’t like West Ham, so it works!

“The potential here is to make people aware of who we are. We’ve got to a certain stage but we need to go further. We need advertising. We need to be a bit better with promoting the club, we need to be doing more with the community that we have.

“We need to grow. We know we’ve got a great club, the players have bought into it.

“If it means going with [zero budget] at the moment I’ve got confidence in my own ability and the players we bring in. At the moment we know where we stand. We’re a very well run club with a great support base.

“There have been about seven

players who have turned down money to come and play for me. I turned down a job with a club in the Southern Premier with a £3,000-aweek budget. I’ve come here for nothing, simply based on what I believe we can do here, in terms of the area, the club the fanbase, everything.”

Fenn intends to do as much as he can to make the club successful.

“I’ve got good ties with Millwall, with the coaching staff. I know the lads at Charlton and Palace. What we need to do is build on the community here. We’re a big name in football and we want to build on that as much as possible.

“Me and the lads will be going down to the local Sainsbury’s and packing their shopping for them to get fully involved in it all.

“It’s a cherry ready to be picked and I intend to be that person that takes the club forward.”

Chips are down as Dulwich lose narrowly Surrey Championship Division 2

DULWICH PLAYED their return match against Chipstead Coulsdon & Walcountians, the current leaders, with whom they had tied in the first match in Division 2 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship.

The two teams had another close encounter, in which Dulwich went down to a narrow defeat by just six

runs.

Dulwich invited their visitors to bat, but Jon Lodwick and Simon Harwood were unable to make an early breakthrough as Nick Woods and Sam Chamberlain put on 60 in 21 overs for the first wicket. By now left arm spinners Alex Gledhill and Ben Swanson had taken over the attack, and imposed such restraint that only four runs came off seven overs following the dismissal of Woods, caught behind off Gledhill. This was the first of five wickets for Gledhill, who bowled his 14 overs straight through at a cost of 40 runs.

Swanson also struck in a spell of 1-21 off 11, as Chipstead declined to 116-6

in the 43rd over. Skipper Rob Woolley led a recovery with an unbeaten 33 off 46 balls, but Salaar Waqar entered the fray with a run out, followed by two wickets in an over. Woolley declared on the fall of the ninth wicket with the score on 158-9 after 52 overs, leaving Dulwich 49 overs to get the runs.

The Dulwich reply got off to a disastrous start when skipper Ed Stolle and Robbie Catling were both dismissed without scoring in the third over of the innings. Keeper Jake Dunford joined Chris Purshouse, and together they added 57 in 12 overs for the third wicket, taking Dulwich to 702 and putting them well ahead of the required rate. But Purshouse’s

dismissal, lbw for 32, sparked a collapse in which four wickets fell in four overs for just seven runs to reduce Dulwich to 77-6 in the 18th over.

Will Bancroft and Lodwick became the third and fourth batsmen to be dismissed for a duck, while George Pearson’s dismissal for 2 meant that five of the top seven scored just two runs between them.

Waqar joined Dunford and together they took the score to 103, when Dunford fell leg before for 34, his fourth successive dismissal in the thirties.

Waqar and Harwood then added 43 in ten overs for the eighth wicket, taking the score to 146-7 in the 37th over.

Waqar was caught and bowled for 36,

the top score of the innings, and Swanson hit his first ball for two.

But the batting then became becalmed as four leg byes were the only runs to come off the next 5.4 overs, which also saw the dismissals of Harwood for 23 and finally Swanson for 2. Dulwich had lost their last three wickets for six runs to be all out for 152.

Dulwich gain just four points from this match, and slip one place to 5th, but they are still only nine points behind second placed Stoke D’Abernon.

Dulwich’s next match is away to Old Rutlishians, who beat them convincingly earlier in the season, but who have since fallen away and are now in ninth place.

Virdi conquers for Surrey

AMAR VIRDI spun Surrey to a convincing victory over Nottinghamshire on the third afternoon of their Specsavers County Championship match at Trent Bridge.

Virdi took six for 78 as Notts were bowled out for 181 in their second innings, giving the visitors a comfortable win by 167 runs.

The 20-year old spinner, who had claimed eight for 61 in Nottinghamshire’s first innings, won’t find many surfaces more conducive to his loopy, well-flighted, off-spin than this dry Nottingham track.

His side had declared their second innings closed on 224 for nine during the opening hour of the day, setting their hosts a victory target of 349.

Jordan Clark made 54, adding to the splendid 55 compiled by team-mate Jamie Smith on the second day.

Virdi said: “It was a good pitch for the spinners, so I can’t say anything other than I enjoyed bowling on it.

Thankfully we got the rewards.

“One thing we noticed there are partnerships but if you hang in there the rewards will come.

“I don’t know if there’s such a thing as the perfect wicket but this was good for the spinners. Obviously my career has been pretty short so far, so I’ve not seen one like that before but hopefully we’ll get some more.

“There are four games to go and it’s nice to win this one going into the T20s and hopefully we will continue this form for the rest of the season.”

Nottinghamshire’s Ravichandran Ashwin had almost gone toe-for-toe with Virdi throughout the match but he had to be content with a match haul of 12 for 144 after taking six second innings Surrey wickets for 75.

In just three matches Ashwin has taken 23 wickets for Notts, an average of only 19 runs apiece, yet finished on the losing side each time.

At the start of the day, with the visitors resuming their second innings on 184 for seven, Clark reached his first Surrey 50 from 83 balls before falling lbw to the Indian Test match spinner.

Notts were three wickets down by lunch, with Virdi removing both Tom Moores and Libby in quick succession.

It became a procession soon after the restart as Samit Patel became the third leg before decision of the innings.

and obviously it’s pre-season but the main thing is that we were competitive at this stage of the year. That game could have easily been a league game.

We’re only two weeks into the preseason so I think it’s a credit to both teams in terms of our fitness levels on the day.”

Hamlet followed up that victory against their National League North opponents with a 4-2 defeat of Marine.

“I was slightly disappointed with the boys who started the game, I think they’re capable of a lot more than what they showed in the first 45 to 60 minutes”, Rose admitted. “We gave away a penalty which was silly and then the second goal was cheap, a free header in the box. Generally our performance wasn’t great. It was a bit slow and a bit lethargic, which was disappointing.

“We made a few changes at different times. The boys that came on showed a bit of an insight into the value that they

will bring. We were lucky enough to get the goals, there’s no guarantee you’re going to get them. But I think our play deserved a decent reward and a bit of respect out of it.”

Mills scored twice again in the second fixture, with Ade Yusuff and Ben Chapman also on target. Two new recruits this summer, David Ijaha and Christian Smith, impressed.

Rose added: “It’s good in terms of bonding, we’ve got some good characters and personalities.

“We took a little bit more time in recruiting them this year because we knew the personalities were just as important as the ability and I think that’s going to stand us in good stead.

This trip in particular’s been good, I think they’ve had a good time and got valuable minutes out of it as well.”

There was a little bit of selfdeprecation as the home crowd applauded the 100 being reached but it gave way to genuine appreciation as Ashwin and Stuart Broad – who didn’t bowl a single delivery in Surrey’s second innings, despite being fit to do so – counter-attacked.

Surrey take 20 points from the contest to move further away from their opponents, who collected just three bonus points and are cut adrift and look set for an imminent return to Division Two.

DULWICH HAMLET boss Gavin Rose was pleased with his side’s trip north last weekend and explained why he has taken his time over recruitment ahead of a second straight season in National League South.

Hamlet defeated Chester 2-1 thanks to two Danny Mills goals as they prepare for the campaign with a host of new arrivals.

“They were very fit and they moved the ball well and they were aggressive,” Rose told the club’s official website. “I felt like that was good for us because we reacted quite well to it. I think at the start we were probably quite surprised at their approach but we reacted really well and competed well, and we started to pass the ball.

WHILE MOST of the focus and interest of fans is on who Neil Harris is signing and selling, Millwall’s youth sides are back in pre-season and those in charge are building for the campaigns ahead.

Harris said this summer the club have the best group of young players in three years. In the last year alone Millwall have seen two of their most promising young players – Darko Gyabi and Samuel Edozie – join Manchester City for deals that could eventually be worth around a combined £3million.

While there is some frustration at seeing that kind of talent pinched by bigger clubs, it also shows that Millwall are discovering and developing players, with compensation fees then ploughed back into the academy.

Last Friday night, Lions fans were able to catch a glimpse of some of

the club’s next generation. The previous weekend Junior Tiensia and Reuben Duncan were in action for the first team at Concord, with the latter scoring the third in a 4-0 win.

While some under-23s, such as Billy Mitchell and Tyler Burey, joined the first-team squad for their training camp in Portugal, Tiensia and Duncan were in action in Rotherhithe, where a Millwall XI defeated Fisher 3-0 at St Paul’s.

Academy boss Scott Fitzgerald was there, along with under-23 manager Kevin Nugent, and Chris Perry and Larry McAvoy, who are over the under-18s, a side that pushed Tottenham all the way in an FA Youth Cup tie last season before losing 2-1 after extra-time.

Millwall played a 4-3-3 formation against the Fish, as they look to equip their players with different skill sets and tactical knowledge.

“We always do that through the underage groups,” Nugent said about giving their young players experience of different systems.

“When the players come in at sixteen years of age for their scholarship they’re here to learn

different types of football and the formations do change a lot.

“We’ve taken on plenty of scholars from last year. There are some good lads who’ve gone away to Portugal with the first team. We’ve brought lads in externally as well so there’s plenty of changes, we’ve got people looking at games [scouting] all the time.

“It’s just pre-season and I’ve said it before, there’s a big step-up between any 23s football and the Championship, so it’s tough for players to get through.

“But we’re doing all we can to do that.

“There’s plenty of work to do, but we feel we’ve got a group that have real character about them. It would be good if they were to step into that first team and give every single thing they’ve got.

“This game was about showing work ethic. They’ve only had a small number of minutes so far so it’s just about getting the rustiness out and making sure they’re ready for the start of the season.

“They’ve got to improve in every game they play. We go through the

Former Swansea, Bristol City and Cardiff striker Nugent began his career at Leyton Orient and enjoyed a spell at Fisher in the 1980s.

He recognises the importance of forming those relationships with local clubs.

He said: “I came on loan to Fisher years ago to what was then the Conference and is now the National League. I came from Orient and it was a really good learning experience. They were based just around here.

“You come from Orient, where I might have played a few first-team games, and then you’re playing in men’s football. It was very tough in those days as well.

"It’s good to keep your local links.

They’re active in and around this area so it was a good night for everyone.”

“It’s all about fitness. The teams were chopping and changing so we haven’t done any sort of work on shape,” Nugent said. “It’s for the lads to get their sharpness up and Fisher are a local club so it’s good to support them as well.

“It was a great workout and a tough game, our keeper had to make a few saves early on. it was an excellent game for us.

“Our lads were back in pre-season the same day as the first team, the youth lads slightly after. We try to bridge that gap to the first team all the time.

“Lads have been sold on at a young age, up to Manchester City. You can see that things are getting done in the right way.

“That’s just the reality nowadays, that’s the frustration of having young players of ability [attracting interest and being sold]. You just have to take the positives from it.

“Scott Fitzgerald is doing a fantastic job organising it all and building it from the bottom. These things take time but it’s all looking good at the moment.”

SHANE FERGUSON could make his return as Millwall boss Neil Harris looks at his options ahead of the start of the season in just two weeks.

Ferguson was given extra time off after his involvement with Northern Ireland in the summer and then his wedding.

The Lions go to Gillingham on Sunday, to renew rivalry – or hostility – with Gills boss Steve Evans.

There is little love lost between Millwall and Evans, who told Lee Gregory to “keep his trap shut” and “enjoy League One” after an acrimonious relegation battle in 2015. Former Lions striker Gregory said he thought Rotherham, under Evans, could bottle it in the fight, but the Millers defeated Reading on the second-last day to consign the Lions to the third tier.

A lot has changed since then, with just three Millwall players, Ben Thompson, Shaun Williams and Aiden O’Bien, from this weekend’s squad who were with the club back in 2015.

Harris is set to utilise most of his squad again at Priestfield, and could try different systems in the third-last first-team friendly before the August 3 Championship clash with Preston at The Den.

Millwall’s squad and backroom staff arrive back from the Algarve in Portugal on Thursday (July 18) after an intense six-day training camp that included friendlies against Fleetwood Town and Primeira Liga side Braga.

A number of under-23s could be given another chance to impress against the Gills, and Fred Onyedinma is also set to feature as he remains on the potential departure list but has been kept involved in preseason.

Tom Elliott, another player who is available for transfer this summer, is unlikely to be involved as he has a hamstring problem.

Harris will be looking to different partnerships to continue flourishing in pre-season. Tom Bradshaw and Matt Smith – qualifying as a littleand-large striker combination less because of the former’s lack of inches, rather that the latter is 6ft 6ins – have looking promising so far.

Harris could continue with O’Brien in a front role as he needs to build up his fitness.

Jiri Skalak has also been given his opportunity after an injury-hit first season at the club, and he needs to take his chances ahead of the season opener.

Ferguson is set to be another leftback option this season, with potentially Skalak and new signing Connor Mahoney left-wing candidates. The latter also plays on the right of midfield as Harris builds a squad of players with versatility.

Harris has yet to confirm who his captain will be this season. As it stands it will be Alex Pearce, who looks like he will start the season as Jake Cooper’s centre-back partner.

Harris needs another right-back, with only Danny McNamara, who has yet to make a senior competitive appearance, as back-up to Mahlon Romeo with James Brown currently injured.

If Harris decides to start the season with a midfield two, Williams, Thompson and Ryan Leonard are vying for those starting spots, with Billy Mitchell, 18, potentially coming into the equation. Harris also needs a replacement for Ryan

Tunnicliffe, who joined Championship new boys Luton Town this summer.

There is still plenty of work to be done on and off the pitch, as Lions fans make the trip to Kent to see their team take shape.

With just thirteen days after Sunday until the first weekend of the season, the excitement is building for Jed Wallace as he looks forward to the most mouth-watering fixtures.

“I always look out for Leeds,”

Wallace said. “I’m looking forward to the home games. They’re the ones playing for Millwall you want to be involved in. Over the course of the season we always have three or four home games that are electric. Last season we had the cup games and hopefully this will be the same.”

AFTER HAVING to apologise to supporters following last weekend’s friendly against Fleetwood, there was a more upbeat message despite a 2-1 defeat to Braga on Tuesday evening.

The Lions’ friendly against Joey Barton’s side had been advertised as “behind closed doors”. But the revelation that there were Cod Army fans at Estadio Municipal in Albufeira led to an angry backlash online from Millwall supporters.

Fleetwood had offered packages worth

£350, including a hotel stay and a Q&A with Barton.

Millwall posted a statement a day later saying the club “understands the disappointment and upset of supporters”.

There was a different tone on Tuesday, with the club publicising the fixture against their Primeira Liga opponents and streaming the game live on their YouTube channel.

And there were plenty of positives signs with the side looking strong against a team that finished fourth last season, behind only Benfica, Porto and Sporting Lisbon.

Goalkeeper Frank Fielding impressed with some excellent saves, while Matt Smith looked a real handful up front.

He was partnered by Aiden O’Brien, who had recovered from a groin problem, and who showed his goal instincts in the box with an equaliser after Joao Palhinha had given the Portuguese side the lead.

Connor Mahoney started on the left wing and displayed his dribbling skills and shooting ability as he cut inside in the first half but saw his fierce drive batted away.

As expected Millwall saw Braga dominate possession for long spells, but then had plenty of the ball themselves and looked threatening on set-pieces.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson made his first Lions appearance in the second half, though had little chance to impress as the game had become scrappy by then with

so many substitutions.

Neil Harris’ side lost 3-0 to these opponents this time last year, but this was a much better display.

Fielding denied Palhinha one-on-one but moments later Braga cut through the Lions defence and Andre Norta shot low past the stopper for the winner.

Ben Thompson partnered Shaun Williams in midfield in Millwall’s starting XI. “They've got a great squad and some of the football they play is outstanding,” Thompson said. “The way they pass it about, the technique, the sharpness they've got, it's second to none. That is where you aspire to be as a player.

“As a team we played extremely well compared to where we were at last year.

I think we're a better team now and that showed out there.

“The training has been good - the standard of it has been brilliant. Everyone looks fit, sharp and ready to go. We're looking forward to the season.”

LIONS HAVE REAL HOPES ‘The camaraderie in the group has gone up this year’

MILLWALL WANT at least two more players on board before their final summer friendly against Real Sociedad next weekend – as Neil Harris revealed his delight at how pre-season has gone.

The Lions need a goalkeeper to challenge Frank Fielding for the No.1 spot and ideally a full-back who can play on either flank.

Harris wants two players for each position, and with just Ben Thompson, Shaun Williams and Ryan Leonard in his squad the Millwall manager is targeting another midfielder.

Millwall have been patient acquiring the targets they had identified before the end of last season, and have made some astute signings.

Connor Mahoney and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson have plenty of Championship experience and came in for around a combined £2million.

Millwall haven’t had any acceptable offers for players they want to offload this summer. Fred Onyedinma has been fully involved in pre-season despite his desire to leave. Tom Elliott’s hamstring injury has hindered his chances of a move away from The Den in the short term, but he is surplus to requirements.

Millwall are confident about the goalkeeping situation as they believe there is a large pool of less experienced but talented youngsters available as well as more experienced stoppers on the lookout for moves.

James Meredith hasn’t appeared in pre-season and Harris used Shane Ferguson at left-back against Braga on Tuesday before Murray Wallace came

on in the second half.

There could be more than three signings before the season-opener against Preston on August 3. If Harris sees Wallace as a left-back then he will need more centre-back depth.

Millwall lost 2-1 to Braga, with Aiden O’Brien scoring, but Harris was positive about the performance and his players’ attitude in pre-season.

“We'll get better because we've got some new lads in who have still got to learn the ropes and the players who have done it for a while can still improve,” Harris said from their Algarve training base.

“We worked on attacking play first [in pre-season] because I wanted us to have more of the ball against non-league sides coming into this trip.

“I'm delighted with the application of the players, their attitude and the togetherness they've got.

“The camaraderie in the group has really gone up a notch this year.

What I'm saying to the boys is that there are going to be teams out there who will push us really hard and be of real quality this year and so we need to find different ways [to be successful].

We need to rely on our Millwall spirit and the togetherness at the club, as well as having the quality.

“As much as I know the spirit will get there because I've signed the right players, it is about that quality. The messages they're taking on at the moment that they're putting into training sessions and games is as good as at any time during my spell in charge.”

Legend Robbo makes Den return

PAUL ROBINSON is back at Millwall more than four years after his departure as a player.

Millwall confirmed this week that former captain Robinson is taking up the role of assistant manager to Kevin Nugent with Millwall’s under23s.

Robinson, 37, is leaving Portsmouth, where he was a coach under Kenny Jackett, after last playing for Havant & Waterlooville in the National League.

Robinson played more than 300 times for Millwall between 2002 and 2015 before leaving for Portsmouth.

He then moved on to AFC Wimbledon and was in their side as they defeated Plymouth 2-0 in the 2016 League Two play-off final at Wembley.

He is a former team-mate of senior manager Neil Harris.

Robinson skippered the Lions in the 2010 League One playoff final, scoring the only goal against Swindon at Wembley.

Robinson was brought back to Pompey by his former Millwall boss Jackett and worked as a defensive coach.

He will now link up with Nugent and also be involved in sessions with the senior squad.

His former employers said: “Portsmouth Football Club would like to thank Paul for his contribution and we wish him all the best back at The Den.”
