SPECULATION THAT PM-hopeful Boris Johnson has been sharing a flat in Camberwell with his girlfriend was dramatically exposed last week, after the national press reported on a bust-up between the pair.

Now posters are being left in the area proclaiming: ‘We’d rather endure him as our neighbour than our Prime Minister.’

The apparent argument just after midnight in the early hours of Friday morning (June 21) was reported to The Guardian newspaper by a neighbour, who is said to have recorded it on a smartphone.

This was just hours after another landslide ballot victory for the 55-year-old former Foreign Secretary.

As Mr Johnson faces Jeremy Hunt in the battle to become the next prime Minister it might well be the residents of Camberwell who stop him from sailing to victory.

The ‘blazing row’ and ‘proper tear-up’ as reportedly described by the neighbours has drawn extensive media attention to the personal life of the Tory leadership favourite, who already has two divorces and a ‘lovechild’.

The Camberwell flat in a plush converted Victorian house is home to his current partner 31-year-old Carrie Symonds, a former Conservative party head of press.

The Southwark News diarist speculated nine days ago that Boris could be living in Camberwell, but avoided revealing where.

But after Friday’s disclosure, national media outlets spent much of the day and

following weekend camped out on the doorstep.

Neighbours interviewed claimed that Miss Symonds was shouting “get off me, get out of my flat” and Boris shouting back ‘get off my f***ing laptop’ before a loud crashing noise was heard and police called.

The Guardian said that when they contacted police they initially said they had no record of a domestic incident at the address.

But when given the case number and reference number, as well as identification markings of the vehicles that were called out, police issued a statement confirming they were called to Miss Symonds’ flat at 00:24am and spoke to all the occupants of the address, ‘who were safe and well’.

Protesters also took the opportunity to demonstrate on Mr Johnson’s doorstep, with activists from the anarchist ‘Class War’ group reportedly holding banners outside the flat on Sunday.

The saga has followed Mr Johnson into the following week as the race for No 10 continues, after being asked about the incident in a series of interviews.

On Monday evening, the favourite to become PM again point-blank refused to talk about the row between himself and Ms Symonds on Friday.

In an interview with the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg for the 10 o’clock news, Mr Johnson said: “I've made it a rule over many, many years and I think you've interviewed me loads of times, I do not talk about stuff involving my family, my loved ones.

“There's a very good reason for that. That is that, if you do, you drag them into things that, really, is, in a way that is not fair on them.”

MEET THE brothers pioneering the world of 3D portraits. Marcin and Piotr Piosik are the creators of My 3D Twin, making personalised figurines in their studio in Bermondsey. They’re the only company of their kind in the UK. On my visit to the studio, a couple was just finishing up having their photos taken for custom-made wedding cake toppers.

“These wedding cake toppers live on beyond the wedding day. You can keep them on your mantel piece next to your wedding portrait,” Marcin told the Weekender.

The studio in Bermondsey’s Biscuit Factory is the beating heart of the operation. Marcin and Piotr built the circular photo booth where customers

stand to pose. 64 Canon cameras line columns around the booth, which pick up every angle and detail. Piotr wired up all the electrics. “He’s an electrician. In the way that in Poland everyone does everything and nothing. We all do a bit of everything,” Marcin said.

The brothers launched the company six years ago. They wanted to leave the corporate world where they were working in IT and initially decided to open an online store. “We didn’t want flat images of the products though,” Marcin said. “We wanted to show the products in 3D and that’s how we started with a 3D scanner.”

The 3D printer comes from the States with a hefty price-tag.

Generally these printers are used for creating prototypes.

Marcin experimented by making a model of his brother to see how it would turn out. The result is incredibly lifelike

figurines, made of plaster powder.

When people come in to the studio, the brothers take 10-20 photos, which the customer can choose their favourite from. After the photos are taken, Piotr uses “a kind of 3D Photoshop” to create the image for the printer and then it prints out a block of plaster with the figure inside it, in full colour. Marcin and Piotr hoover away all the excess plaster (which goes back into the machine) and then use a tiny brush to remove the rest of the excess to reveal the detailed shape beneath.

The figure is then coated in resin to make the colours pop, bring out all the finer details and preserve it.

From the date of visiting the studio, it takes around two weeks to create the figurines. “Each piece is a piece of art,” Marcin said.

“I sent figures of me and my brother to my Mum in Poland for Mother’s Day and now when we facetime she’ll say ‘I was just having coffee with you’ and has the figures sitting next to her on the table,” he said.

The mini-models are proving popular for pets, as well as special occasions like graduations, birthday cakes and 3D family portraits -like a nativity set for your own family.

“It’s a unique and personalised photograph that’s so different to a portrait,” Marcin said.

He references traditional photographs where 30 years ago people were buying film, then taking photos which had to be developed and out of a set of, say, 30, a lot of them would be bad. “Now with phones we take photos constantly and it costs us nothing and we don’t really do anything with them and they’ve sort of lost their value,” Marcin said.

Over the next few months, Marcin and Piotr are taking their photo booth to university graduations. The wedding cake toppers remain their most in-demand product.

“It’s a new concept,” Marcin said.

“It’s all done in-house and finished by hand. Each figure is a piece of artistry.”

POLICE HAVE issued an appeal after a series of broad daylight sexual assaults and thefts from women in South Norwood Country Park.

The attacks are believed to have taken place between Friday May 3 and Friday June 21. Each of the six victims, aged from their early 30s to mid-60s, were walking or jogging alone, five of them with their dogs.

Four were sexually assaulted and in four cases the suspect either stole or attempted to steal their mobiles.

None of the victims suffered any further injuries, said Scotland Yard.

THREE SOUTHWARK pupils were honoured at an awards ceremony at Buckingham Palace earlier this month for their contributions to a network of state school ‘news clubs’.

Students Sophie Mason and Adelina Shima, from Bermondsey’s Boutcher Primary School, and Ajaaz Ajmal from Walworth’s Michael Faraday School received ‘Outstanding Student’ awards for their work with the Burnet News Club.

The club is a network of state school current affairs clubs for 8 to 14 year-olds across the UK, run by The Economist’s Educational Foundation.

The trio were part of ten pupils selected to take part in the Burnet News Club’s annual awards on June 18 – and while there, Ajaaz recited a poem he had written exploring the rise in knife crime.

Council bans ‘junk food’ and alcohol advertising

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL will ban ‘junk food’ and alcohol ads on its advertising spaces from next month, writes Josh Salisbury...

From July 1, any ads promoting food said to be high in fat, salt or sugar will be barred for new advertising contracts with the local authority, as well as alcoholic drinks.

The ads ban covers all council controlled ad spaces, including hoarding boards, electronic displays and smart benches.

The move comes on the back of a decision by Transport for London to ban ‘junk food’ ads from its estate in February.

In a report discussed by Cabinet on Tuesday, it is stated that the financial implications cannot be calculated at this stage, although there was a “risk” that the policy would reduce ads

income for the town hall. However the risk would be monitored by officers, it added.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, who holds the public health portfolio on the Cabinet, said: “It is difficult to deny the link between increased fast food advertising and childhood obesity, greater exposure to the advertising of unhealthy foods has been shown to increase the consumption of these foods.

“I want to reduce unhealthy food advertising and at the time encourage children and young people, families and carers to buy healthier options as well as cook more healthily.”

Southwark has among the highest levels of childhood obesity in England, with almost 40 per cent of 10-11 year olds in the borough being overweight or obese.

CONSTRUCTION OF a major cycling route which will see dramatic changes to a number of key Southwark roads will begin next month, TfL has said.

Work on the initial 1.8km phase of Cycleway 4 between Tower Bridge and Rotherhithe will begin on July 5, and will see new crossings on Tooley Street and

Jamaica Road, and changes to Rotherhithe roundabout.

The work is expected to finish in April next year – and motorists are warned to plan ahead for delays as Tooley Street and Jamaica Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

Construction will take place between 8am and 6pm six days a week, with the potential for additional work on Sundays if required, said TfL. Work on further sections of the route

covering Evelyn Street and Creek Road, Deptford, will begin next year.

Although efforts will be made to reduce disruption, including working during the school summer holidays when roads are quieter where possible, drivers and bus users should expect delays in the area, TfL added.

The council will begin consulting on further changes in the borough as part of the route, including the area surrounding Lower Road, next month.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, who holds the council’s transport portfolio, said the local authority welcomed the new addition to segregated cycleways in the borough.

“I hope that the introduction of segregated bike lanes and improved junctions will encourage even more people to get on their bikes and help to improve their health and happiness, and all of our air quality,” he said.

Mayor Sadiq Khan said he was “delighted” that work was beginning on

the route.

“High-quality segregated cycle routes greatly increase the numbers of people who feel confident cycling on our streets and with new pedestrian crossings along the route, road danger will be substantially reduced for thousands of pedestrians too,” he said.

Travel advice can be found on the TfL website. When completed the route will create a continuous segregated cycle route from Tower Bridge to Greenwich.

TFL AND the Mayor were faced with a backlash after announcing on Friday the Rotherhithe Bridge would be ‘paused’ because expected costs have nearly doubled.

TfL will return to considering other options, including ferries, for the crossing between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf, saying “the sheer scale” of the bridge means it is “currently unaffordable.”

In a letter announcing the decision, deputy mayor for transport Heidi Alexander said: “The current midpoint cost estimate for the scheme is £463m, within a range that means final costs could be over £600m.

“This compares to a £350m allocation in the current TfL Business Plan. The bridge is therefore unaffordable in the short to medium term, particularly in the context of TfL’s wider financial challenges.”

A spokesperson for the Mayor said the estimated cost of the bridge had increased to half a billion pounds, and that pausing work was a “sensible” choice to protect London’s taxpayers.

Council leader, Cllr Peter John, said the council was “very disappointed“, called on the deputy mayor and TfL to get the project back on track.

“If costs have increased, it’s important we understand why, and look at what can be done to manage costs without jeopardising such an important project.”

The local area had been neglected in terms of transport for too long, he added,

Southwark Council’s opposition Liberal Democrats branded the TfL and Mayoral decision to abandon the Rotherhithe Bridge as ‘Labour’s Garden Bridge fiasco’.

“This will become Labour’s ‘Garden Bridge’ fiasco, but more than that, it shows that Labour sadly lacks the drive, vision and ability to deliver the modern

green infrastructure Southwark and London needs,” said the group’s transport spokesman, Cllr Damien O’Brien.

“This is hugely disappointing news that’s come out of the blue. Labour had promised to deliver this vital cycle and pedestrian bridge and despite them failing on Bricklayers Tube station, bike-hire, and the RV1 bus, we had

believed they meant it this time.”

But Labour’s Rotherhithe ward councillors said they condemned the decision and that they also urged TfL to reconsider, despite its “funding pressures” from central Government.

“We understand that there are funding pressures on TfL but they have serious questions to answer about how their estimated cost has more than doubled,”

said the ward’s three councillors.

“We completely condemn TfL’s decision, and we urge them to reconsider.”

In consultation, published in March last year, 93 per cent of residents backed a navigable river crossing at some kind between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf, with 85 per cent backing a navigable bridge.

THE EMPTY TESCO IN ELEPHANT AND CASTLE HAS BEEN TURNED INTO A FREE COMMUNITY SPACE

THE SHUT-DOWN Tesco in Elephant and Castle shopping centre is now home to a free community events space.

Tesco Metro announced it had permanently closed in April, after struggling to fix a mouse infestation for several weeks.

The News understands the outbreak was isolated, and has been subsequently resolved.

Open from Monday, June 24, the first floor unit previously used by Tesco staff will host free fitness classes, arts and crafts workshops, and activities for the over-60s.

Diana Barranco, community director, Elephant and Castle Town Centre, said: “We have been working very hard to rethink how we can use the former Tesco

store.

“We want to provide a place to bring people together through a variety of free activities for all, and the community hub provides the perfect space to do this.

“We are excited we can use it for great initiatives in the area that need it, and welcome other organisations to get in touch if they would like to hold an activity in the hub and be part of the timetable.

CHAMPION HILL landlord Meadow Partners and Dulwich Hamlet FC have submitted the latest planning application for a new stadium and homes at the site.

The application includes a new stadium for DHFC on a 125-year peppercorn lease with 4,000 capacity and the potential to expand to 5,000, and an allweather and multi-use pitch.

Meadow says the application includes better toilet facilities and improved accessibility including disabled parking, coach and cycle parking, a new club house and bigger bar, and new changing areas.

The design will also enable home and away fans to be kept separate. The pitch will also be upgraded to a 3G pitch; meeting FIFA and FA requirements.

New homes are also slated for the site, with 224 in total; 40 per cent of which will be ‘affordable’. Three hundred trees will be planted and there will also be an outdoor gym park.

The joint application comes after Meadow and Dulwich Hamlet FC buried the hatchet when their longrunning dispute ended with the club returning to Champion Hill from its exile in Tooting.

Gavin Rose, Manager, Dulwich Hamlet FC, said: “We’ve had a great end to the season with record numbers of fans. Off the pitch it’s been a different story, and everyone knows we’ve been through a difficult time. But now we need our fans to get behind us.

“Together we can achieve more success in the league. A new stadium means we will build on this season, ready for more success in the future. Please support us.”

His thoughts were echoed by chairman Ben Clasper, who said: “Dulwich Hamlet FC has a powerful heritage bringing non-league football to south London and making a significant contribution to our community.

“These proposals will secure the club’s future and we urge all our fans and supporters in south London to get behind the club and support our application for a new stadium.”

The application will soon be available to view on Southwark Council’s website, with the opportunity for residents to share their views in advance of the planning committee’s final decision, expected to be made later in the year.

As the News reported earlier this month, although the club and its landlord have found a way forward, there is still no love lost between Meadow and Southwark Council leader Peter John.

Meadow took umbrage at a series of illconceived tweets whereupon Cllr John asked whether it was the ‘stupidest development company in history or simply the nastiest?’

The council was forced to launch a costly internal review after Meadow complained the comments were in breach of councillors’ code of conduct.

Although the council leader was exonerated by a committee, his colleagues admitted ‘the choice of words could have been better’, and taxpayers footed the £13,000 administrative cost of the investigation.

Del Boy’s Peckham pad would be worth nearly half-a-million pounds on today’s market according to research comparing TV property values across the UK.

According to the research, the Nelson Mandela House flat in the sitcom – actually filmed in Ealing – would fetch £497,000 or £644 per sq ft.

The same three-bed apartment in leafy Chelsea would fetch a neat £1.3million, and only £67,000 if situated in the cheapest postcode of Newcastle in the North East.

Other telly homes discussed by the research, conducted by Attic Self

Storage, include the Peep Show’s Croydon flat and Sherlock Holmes’ famous 221b Baker St apartment.

Peep Show’s Mark and Jez’s 808 sq. ft Croydon flat would now cost £360,000 – but if situated in SW3, among London’s most expensive postcodes, it would be worth four times as much.

Frederic de Ryckman de Betz, the CEO of Attic Self Storage, said: “We wanted to explore how much we are actually getting for our money and how this varies across England.

“This raises an interesting question regarding whether people would rather sacrifice floor space to live in a particular area, and also whether people move specifically in order to get more room for their money.”

BESTSELLING HERNE Hill author Fiona Watt celebrated the 20th birthday of her That’s not my… series at Tales on Moon Lane last week, with a flamingo display.

That’s not my flamingo… is the latest in the touchy-feely series of popular children’s books, with one book sold every minute.

At the bookshop in Half Moon Lane, Fiona was joined by storyteller Vanessa Woolf from London Dreamtime, who holds sensory play storytelling sessions with parents and kids, bringing the books to life for the young audience.

The writer and former teacher is the sixth biggest-selling children’s author in the UK, behind JK Rowling, Julia Donaldson and Jacqueline Wilson among others, having sold more than ten million copies.

Upton, of no fixed abode, was charged on Wednesday, June 19, by police investigating a reported abduction of an eight-year-old child and assault on police officers.

The alleged kidnap took place on Monday, June 17, in Burgess Park, close to Addington Square.

Upton, (born. 27.05.95) was charged with kidnap with intent to commit a sexual offence, assault on a child under thirteen, and two counts of assault on an emergency worker.

He appeared in custody at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court and will be back in court on Wednesday, July 17.

A LITTLE Staffie was allegedly ‘dumped’ over a 5-feet fence on a Rotherhithe estate late at night – and now the RSPCA have launched an appeal.

The “distressed” dog, named by rescuers as Jiffy, was reportedly dropped over the metal fence of an enclosed grass area of Thaxted Court, Abbeyfield Estate at around 11pm on Monday June 3.

The man who dropped him over the fence allegedly tied the poor creature to it, before running off, witnesses told the RSPCA. A concerned member of the public climbed over the fence to remove the dog and then kept him safe until RSPCA animal collection officer Monica Faloona arrived on the scene.

She took him for a check-up at Putney’s animal hospital.

Monica said: “We are very grateful to everyone who tried to help this poor little dog, especially as it was quite late at night.

“Jiffy, as we have since named him, was really stressed by his ordeal, but despite everything he had been through he is still extremely friendly.

“It’s just really heart-breaking to think of how he must have felt being

HOLLYWOOD LEGEND Tom Hanks met children at the Evelina London on Monday for a special pre-release screening of Toy Story 4.

The Oscar-winning actor, who voices Woody in the hit franchise, joined patients and families for face painting and balloon making – and even made a trip to one of the hospital’s wards to meet children unable to attend the screening.

Sixteen-month-old Roman Stacey, who is being treated for kidney failure at the hospital’s Beach ward, was among the children who met Hanks.

His dad, Leon, 32, said: “Meeting Tom

“Thankfully he was not injured, he stayed at the hospital overnight and has since been transferred to a private boarding facility.”

Jiffy is around three to four years old, brindle and white in colour, and was not microchipped or neutered.

RSPCA inspector James Whipps is investigating and urged anyone with information to get in contact.

He said: “I am keen to hear from anyone who might know who owned Jiffy or who may have any information regarding the circumstances as to why he was left to please call me in confidence on the inspectorate appeal line on 0300 123 8018.”

After seeing Jiffy’s story when it was published online by the News, several kind-hearted readers got in touch to ask whether he needed a home.

However, an RSPCA spokesperson said: “Sadly he is still stressed and confused following his ordeal and we don't know if this is a result from his abandonment or because of his previous past life, which we don’t have any details about.

“At the moment he isn’t up for rehoming while staff spend time gaining his trust and his confidence.”

Tree collision leaves man with ‘potentially life changing’ injuries

The hospital is part of the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust, which was the first to have a ‘Medicinema’ – an onsite cinema showing movies to patients.

Marian Ridley, director at Evelina, said: “We were absolutely delighted to welcome Tom Hanks to our hospital as we celebrate our 150th anniversary.

“His visit will have helped lift our patients’ spirits and add some fun to their stay.”

The star made the visit as Disney is a

long-time contributor to the Guy’s and St Thomas’ charity.

“Both Tom and the Toy Story films have been a big part of people’s lives over the years and I know this is a moment that both the children and their parents will treasure,” said Steve Crump, chief executive of Medicinema.

“Many patients find life in hospital hard, so spending a precious few hours watching this uplifting film, as well as meeting the voice behind Woody, will make a real difference to their stay.

“We cannot thank Disney enough for making this happen for our patients and Tom for coming and making the screening a truly magical experience.”

Toy Story 4 was released in cinemas on June 21.

A MAN has been left with ‘potentially life-changing’ injuries after his car collided with a tree on Great Dover Street on Sunday evening, June 23.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the collision shortly before 8.30pm, which saw the road closed and public transport services re-routed.

The motorist is believed to be in his thirties.

The emergency services had been working to free the man from inside the vehicle, they told the News on Sunday evening.

In the latest update from police on Monday, a spokeswoman said: “Police were called at approximately 20:25hrs on Sunday, 23 June to reports of a car in collision with a tree on Great Dover Street, SE1.

Lessons weren’t learned from horrors of Lakanal

HEN YOU read our detailed look back at the horrors of the Lakanal fire ten years ago, you feel sickened to the pit of your stomach at the loss of life and the agony of the families of those who perished. Once again, you come away with the inescapable conclusion that six deaths - including two children and a baby - could and should have been prevented.

But there is now an added dimension - recognition that so much of what went wrong at Lakanal was revisited on an even more horrific scale in the Grenfell Tower inferno.

There is no perfect safety plan that could guarantee all tower block blazes end with the safe evacuation all residents - that’s just not realistic. But what is without question is that lessons were not learnt on a national scale from the horrors of Lakanal House ten years ago.

That is the biggest insult to the people who lost their lives - Catherine Hickman, Dayana, Thais and Felipe Francisquini, Helen and Michelle Udoaka. It’s an insult to their devastated families. And it’s an insult to the seventy two people who perished nearly eight years later in Grenfell Tower.

The failing of duty then, and the failure to make systemic changes far beyond this borough leaves a legacy of shame. Our hearts go out to all those whose lives were torn apart by this tragedy, and who will remember their loved ones this coming week.

Rotherhithe bridge decision raises eyebrows

MAJORITY of residents will no doubt be disappointed by TfL’s decision to ‘pause’ – or, more bluntly, scrap - the project for a pedestrian and cycle bridge spanning the river from Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf.

In consultation last year, 93 per cent backed a navigable river crossing between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf, and a hefty 85 per cent backed a bridge. The project is backed by the area’s MP, the council and ward councillors – and for good reason. There can be no doubt that greater transport connectivity is needed in this area of Southwark. Existing river crossings are already overcrowded. And the Mayor rightly points out the need to reduce air pollution in the capital.

In explaining their decision, City Hall and TfL say the “sheer scale” of the bridge means it is too expensive in a financially challenging environment. Estimated costs for the bridge could have exceeded £600m – almost double the budget allocated to it in TfL’s business plan. Now a cheaper ‘ferries option’ will be progressed instead of the bridge option.

The overwhelming call in the week since has been for TfL and the Mayor to explain exactly how costs on the vital infrastructure project have risen so dramatically – and to rethink its decision.

TfL and the Mayor must be willing and prepared to answer questions.

THE LAKANAL FIRE - 10 YEARS ON...

A MEMORIAL service to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Lakanal House fire will be held on Wednesday, July 3, in memory of the six lives lost and the many left traumatised and forced to move out of their homes in the aftermath of the disaster.

Organised by Sceaux Gardens Tenants’ and Residents’Association, the multi-faith commemoration will be held at St Giles Church in Camberwell at 6.30pm.

TRA chair, David Lewis, told the News getting word out to those who lived in Lakanal House at the time was difficult, as many did not return after the block was refurbished and brought back into use.

He hopes readers can help publicise the event to former Lakanal residents, families and friends, and those who rallied round after the tragedy.

The News understands that some surviving relatives of victims of the fire have said the service, which is open to all, will be too painful for them to attend, but it is believed around 100 people will mark the tragedy on the day.

David, who watched the fire rapidly take hold from his own flat in the identical ‘sister’ block, Marie Curie, said: “I saw the fire early on.

My partner and I were at home and saw it in the first five minutes.

“I wasn’t too worried at first as there had been fires previously that had been put out quickly.

“I heard the fire engine and thought it would be out within ten minutes.”

But something changed and the fire began to move across, and up, with smaller fires breaking out further down.

“The fire had really taken hold in the original flat that it had broken out in. I could see the smoke was coming out of the flat above.

“It was a very beautiful day summer’s afternoon and people had all their windows open.

“There was falling debris and burning embers getting sucked into the open windows further down and starting more fires.

"It was horrifying."

Over the next two hours he watched as the fire engulfed flats in the 11th and 9th floors and fire teams started working up the block trying to rescue trapped families.

But they were too late, and three women and three children died - one of whom had been on the phone to an operator for nearly an hour told to ‘stay put’ instead of getting out when she may have still been able to escape.

From his own flat window, David, now 60 and retired from his work as a manager for National Rail, saw the blaze quickly spread, and joined the hundreds watching in disbelief at the hampered rescue efforts.

Exactly 7 years 11 months and 25 days before Grenfell

In the aftermath of the fire, hundreds of residents were sheltered in community halls, sleeping on the floor with nothing but the clothes on their backs and what had been donated by the charity efforts that sprang into gear.

At that point, David says, why the fire spread upwards and laterally was still unexplained, but news - and rumour was starting to creep in about how the fire spread so quickly, describing tenants on the estate as ‘absolutely terrified’.

“We had people coming to Marie Curie and ripping out the communal ceilings without any information or prior notice.

“We now know the fire spread within minutes because of the panels under the windows that had been replaced, but back then we didn’t know this.

“The more we found out about the work that had been done on the block and what was needed to make it right, the more terrifying it was.

“After the fire I couldn’t sleep properly for weeks, and even know when I hear a fire engine turn into the estate I have to get up and look out to see where it is going as it brings it all back.

“It is very difficult to explain just how terrifying it is to live somewhere you know isn’t safe, and for a long time we just weren’t getting information quickly from the council or the fire brigade.

“At the time of the fire there was an art class for children run nearby, and for weeks they were drawing pictures of fires.

“They would now be 19/22 years old,

and they will still have those scars.”

An inquest in 2013 brought to light the extent of the council’s fire safety failings - then run by a Liberal Democrat and Conservative coalition.

It also showed the harrowing cost of following the official fire brigade advice of ‘stay put’ - those who did were the ones who died.

After Lakanal, the council spent tens of millions on fire safety work including a rolling programme of assessments.

Two years of renovation work took place at Marie Curie.

David says despite much of the fault lying with the botched building works, ultimately the issue came down to regulations he describes as ‘an utter mess and not fit for purpose’.

“The fire changed me and it politicised me,’ he says.

“We couldn’t give evidence at the Lakanal inquest as a TRA despite Harriet Harman our MP lobbying for us, because we weren’t seen as relevant.

“I just don’t think the coroner or people involved understood.

“Eric Pickles, who was then the minister for local government, wrote to councils saying they should consider implementing improved fire safety after the inquest, but there was of course no money to go with it, and nothing was done.

“I saw Grenfell break out from my flat too, until I saw the smoke I had no idea you could see as far as Ladbroke Grove from my block.”

David joined the Labour party in 2015 and has become an active campaigner for fire safety, including giving evidence

in the Hackitt Review into fire safety regulation change.

“I’ve told the story of what happened at Lakanal dozens of times because I want the complete overhaul in the regulations that we need.

“We must have the integrity of our buildings, so if there is a ‘stay put’ policy we know we can rely on it to be safe because the buildings have been maintained properly.

“Between Lakanal and Grenfell nothing was done and those recommendations just sat gathering dust.

“I chose to stay here at Sceaux Gardens and live every day with the memories and I’m glad I did, because there’s a community here and it’s a great place to live.

“After Lakanal a group of people came together to help people affected and ten years on many of those people I’m still in touch with.

“And when Grenfell happened, and when residents found out the Ledbury might not be safe, we all called each other first and went to help.

“My fear is that more people are going to die - that is the reality of it.

“We need more homes in London but how do we know these homes are safe?

“The only way London is growing is by building up - Old Kent Road, Elephant and Castle, it’s all new towers.

“I want the government to start listening to people who actually live in these blocks about their concerns because I really do think another Lakanal, or another Grenfell, could happen.”

March 28 – Inquest closes with a damning verdict. The Coroner Judge publishes her recommendations to public bodies in the hope lessons learned can stop a similar tragedy from ever happening.

June 6 - Eric Pickles, then secretary of state for communities and local government, responds to the coroner’s recommendations and commits to reviewing building regulations.

2015 £9.5 million worth of work began on refurbishing the boarded up block to bring it back into use, after the council decided demolition wasn’t an option given Southwark’s chronic housing shortage.

Many former tenants had been resettled elsewhere and did not choose to move back into the block. Some flats on the top floor were sold off to help fund the work.

2016 The first families move back into the block. A number of original tenants were among them. A memorial garden with six trees provided an understated monument to those who lost their lives. Suggestions to change the blocks name were ultimately rejected.

2017 Februar y 24 - Southwark Council pleads guilty to fire safety breaches that contributed to the six deaths in Lakanal House after charges were brought by London Fire Brigade.

Februar y 28 – Southwark Council sentenced and fined £270,000 and told to pay costs of £300,000.

Anniversar y 3rd July, 2019 On the ten-year anniversary, a multi-faith memorial service will be held at St Giles Church in Camberwell.

4.15pm - A fire breaks out in flat 65, Lakanal House, due to an electrical fault in a TV in the living room 4.21pm – The flat’s occupant, Jade Spence, calls 999 and fire engines are dispatched to the scene. Catherine Hickman, in flat 79, also calls 999 and says smoke is coming into her flat 4.22pm – The first fire engine arrives 4.23pm – Catherine Hickman says smoke is coming through her floorboards. After asking whether to leave or not, she is told to stay.

4.44pm – The operator tells fire crews residents in flats 68 and 79 are very distressed. They are asked to force entry as a matter of urgency.

4.45pm – Helen Udoaka calls 999 from flat 82, where she is with her baby, and says they are trapped and ‘everywhere is choked with smoke’.

Still on the line, Catherine screams and says “Something hot fell on me. It’s falling from the ceiling.”

4.48pm – Smoke is seen in flat 53 on the seventh floor and from flat 37 on the fifth floor, blowing downward.

4.49pm – Catherine’s words can be made out for the last time on the line.

At the same time, the operator is told there are crews in flats 68 and 79, and he explains a baby might be trapped in flats 80 or 82.

4. 50pm – Emma Ball calls from the first floor and says the fire is moving down, from the seventh to the third floor. She is told: “No, listen, the fire goes up, alright?”

At some point, between 4.50pm and 5pm, Catherine perishes.

AT THE inquest, Catherine Hickman’s grieving boyfriend, a hair stylist who had been in New York at the outbreak of the blaze, told of how he woke up every night screaming and crying after her death.

The couple had been together for six years.

It also emerged her family had not been told until five days after the fire that her body had been found.

Her father, Pip, who was too heartbroken to relive the terrible events, declined to attend the inquest in person.

He described her as ‘beautiful, kind, loving, warm, genuine, trustworthy, loyal, funny, proper, sweet, pure, classic, talented, unique and irreplaceable’.

A fashion designer, Catherine had created her own fashion label, Moi Et Cat, and had created several looks for Bjork in her glittering career.

She died after speaking to an operator for almost an hour, before losing consciousness during the 999 call.

She called 999 at 4.21pm, telling emergency services there were flames coming out of the window and smoke coming from the flat. Later, the emergency operator at the other end of the line heard her screaming as burning debris fell from the ceiling.

After forty minutes she stopped talking and the operator could no longer hear her breathing.

DAYANA FRANCISQUINI’S partner Rafael told the inquest everything he had ever dreamed of was over in three hours.

He met Dayana in a Brazilian night club in London and lived with her, his step-daughter and son. He described Thais as a ‘dream daughter’ and his son Felipe as a ‘naughty little boy’ who could also be ‘very sweet’.

After rushing home from work after receiving a call from his panic-stricken wife, he desperately tried to reassure her that firefighters were coming for them.

But all he could do was watch helplessly in horror as smoke engulfed the building, telling the inquest “It’s hard when you see what happens, you’re trying to do something, but you can’t.”

Rafael told the jury a firefighter told him the family needed to stay put and told him not to worry, saying, ‘they’re fine’.

Helen Udoaka took her 20-day-old baby Michelle into Dayana Francisquini’s flat to escape the heavy smoke coming into her home.

The baby’s father, Mbet Udoaka, whom she had met in Nigeria in 2003, when they were both studying at university in Lagos, raced home as soon as she called him.

Between 4.24pm and 5.30pm he spoke to his wife more than eleven times until the line finally went quiet.

The last words she said to him on the phone were that ‘the smoke is too much’ and that their daughter was going to heaven.

He arrived at hospital believing they had been saved, only to find his entire family had succumbed to the blaze.

A fund was set up by the News to help Rafael lay his family to rest in their home country of Brazil.

Their bodies were flown to Curitiba, in the south of the country, with donations from the Camberwell community and funeral director Barry Albin, after Rafael promised Dayana’s father he would return them home.

Rafael told the inquest in 2013: “There were so many mistakes and misunderstandings between He later saw his three-week-old child, whom he described as a ‘lovely, happy baby’, carried out of the burning building and travelled with her to King’s College Hospital.

Not knowing his wife’s fate, he was told to go to St Thomas’ Hospital where there was no sign of Helen. She was later found dead in Lewisham Hospital.

Helen and Dayana and their children had been just yards away from a balcony where firefighters rescued two young girls. The crews were unable to go back because their oxygen levels were running dangerously low. Tragically, none of them knew the balconies opened onto escape routes.

After the inquest, Mr Mbet said: “if I was allowed to go upstairs, maybe I would have been able to rescue them myself… when I got to Lakanal House, the eleventh floor wasn’t on fire – that means, if they had gone upstairs straightaway, they would have rescued these people.”

He said the hardest part was trying to explain how much he had lost. “The worst thing is when you have to describe your family and what they mean to you, he said.

“That’s the worst part, when you have a family you love, there’s no way to describe what they mean to you.”

AN INQUEST was held into the cause of the deaths, and how the fire spread so rapidly, four years later, in 2013. Costing £2.1 million, the 50-day inquest saw jurors hear more than 6,016 pages of evidence. Its findings were damning.

Survivors recalled ‘panic everywhere’

THE FIRE spread up and across, but also down, fanned by a prevailing wind.

Survivors, like Norman Ebiowwei, from flat 97 on the thirteenth floor, told of the thick smoke and blazing heat.

“I noticed it was difficult breathing but there was only one thing on my mind. ‘We all have to get out of here’,” he said.

He and his family covered their faces with wet towels and managed to escape.

His next-door neighbour, Georgia Thomas, who also made it out, said: “It was hard to breathe, I could feel my chest burning.

“I had to get my children out of there, describing the scene as ‘just panic everywhere’.

Bravery amid chaos and the confusion

FIREFIGHTERS also described terrible conditions – and confusion.

One of the first to enter the block later collapsed from smoke inhalation after rescuing a child, while the firefighter who found the lifeless body of baby Michelle was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and signed off work for seven months.

When asked what would have made a difference that day, he told the inquest: “Maybe more resources, man power, a better understanding of plans and the layout.”

Another firefighter who gave evidence said: “I don’t remember hearing about any flat numbers where people may have been trapped.”

A team of eight firefighters had visited Lakanal House just two months before the fire broke out to check fire safety procedures – including escape route methods – on May 2, 2009.

Despite this, at the inquest members of the crew described how some radios failed and it took at least ten minutes to relay key information about who was trapped where on a handwritten note passed to the crew manager after the watch manager was ‘bombarded’ with information.

The jurors heard firefighters arriving to tackle the blaze had no knowledge of layout and didn’t realise the

balconies on alternate floors also acted as fire escapes.

Victims died because they were told to ‘stay put’

CATHERINE HICKMAN perished alone in her flat while on the phone to emergency services, repeatedly told to stay put even though smoke was coming through her floorboards.

Helen Udoaka, her daughter Michelle, Dayana Francisquini, son Felipe Francisquini Cervi, aged 3, and daughter Thais Francisquini, aged 6, all died after seeking refuge from the overpowering smoke, crammed into a

tiny bathroom.

They had been told to stay where they were, assured someone was coming to rescue them.

The government’s chief fire and rescue advisor, Paul Holland, told the inquest that operators should tell residents trapped in a building on fire to ‘get out and stay out’, but in high rise flats with a ‘stay put’ policy they should stay in their flats unless affected by smoke or heat during a blaze.

Operators, however, would not know if a building had a stay put policy or not. He also said the stay put policy relies on the building’s materials and design ensuring a fire is contained, giving firefighters a window of half an hour up to four hours.

There were no fire assessments in high risk block

THE INQUEST heard there were no fire assessments in place at the time of the blaze even though Lakanal House was a high risk building which should have been checked as a priority for fire hazards.

Southwark Council became responsible for carrying out these assessments for its buildings in 2006 but didn’t start until 2009.

But, most damning, it emerged during the major works programme of 2006- 2007, the council had failed to make a building control application,

In these works, panels under the windows were ripped out and replaced with less fire resistant materials – as part of £2.8 million of improvements.

A photo of a previous fire in flat in 1997 showed panels under the bedroom windows were still intact after the contained blaze.

But the new panels burnt within just five minutes.

LAKANAL WAS more than a tragedy; it was a serious failing of duty. Six people died that day in Camberwell, including a 20-day-old baby.

It is believed all of them could have been saved if they had been given the right advice to get out and stay out, rather than stay put; if they had known the right escape routes out the block; and if the building’s materials not been made less safe by the council’s own refurbishments.

Lakanal House was the worst tower block fire the country had ever seen, until two years ago when on another hot, summer’s afternoon, a deadly fire swept through a high-rise block of council flats in Kensington and Chelsea.

Seventy-two people lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower inferno, with countless more injured, bereaved and traumatised by the blaze that rapidly took hold of its external cladding.

It was not just a question of why it had happened – but how such a devastating high-rise fire could have happened again.

Just months beforehand, in February the same year, Southwark Council pleaded guilty to fire safety breaches in court after charged were brought forward by London Fire Brigade over the Lakanal House blaze.

But lessons first heard at the inquest in 2013 were never implemented at national level, leaving thousands of residents living, unbeknownst to them, in death trap homes.

After the inquest into Lakanal, Coroner Judge Frances Kirkham wrote to the council, London Fire Commissioner, and the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, with a series of recommendations to prevent a similar disaster occurring in future.

Among more than 40 recommendations, she said more guidance should be given to residents in high rise blocks, including clear guidance on how to react if a fire breaks out and whether circumstances change – for example is smoke starts coming in.

She also recommended that layouts should be given to emergency workers.

The Department for Communities and Local Government, led by then-minister Eric Pickles, was asked to publish national guidance on the confusing ‘stay put’ principle and ‘get out and stay out’ policy.

The government was also asked to provide guidance on building regulations and check the safety of materials and whether work can reduce existing fire protection, and consider retrofitting sprinklers across high-rise blocks.

JADE SPENCE, who lived in flat 65, where the fatal fire began and was able to narrowly escape, was the first person to raise the alarm.

She dialled 999 at 4.18pm that day after seeing thick black smoke from her kitchen window.

But despite publishing a response committing to publishing new building guidance and committing to make fire safety and priority, no review came.

Lakanal inquest jurors had been told there was no realistic prospection of any prosecution for manslaughter against Southwark Council or any company.

However, in 2017, charges against the council were successfully brought by the London Fire Brigade and, just months before Grenfell, Southwark pleaded guilty to the breaches.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, then housing cabinet member at Tooley Street, now under Labour control, said: “We took the decision to plead guilty to all four counts of breach of fire safety regulations associated with the Lakanal building on the July 2 2009, the day before the fire.

‘Numerous opportunities’ missed

AFTER TEN weeks, jurors concluded the three women and three children who perished could have been saved.

The verdict was damning, revealing the extent of the council’s failings and missed opportunities to make the block safe.

The 2006-2007 major works and the asbestos removal and replacement with composite panels “had a significant impact on the fire resistance of the external wall of Lakanal House,” described as “a serious failure on the part of Southwark Building Design Services, its contractors and its subcontractors.

The council did not prioritise carrying out the fire risk assessments and failed to assess Lakanal House three years after it became their legal responsibility to do so.

Speaking after the verdict, bereaved Mr Udoaka said: “We fear very much that lessons have not been learned and that it could happen again.”

Crucial information which Ms Hickman has passed on during the call about the layout of Lakanal House and how she was being affected by smoke and fire was not ‘shared effectively with, or acted on,

by London Fire Brigade personnel’, members of the jury agreed.

The verdicts stated that all six residents would have been able to escape the tower block using the narrow balcony on the east side of the building which led to the communal staircase.

Jurors ruled ‘escape would have been daunting but not impossible’, and insufficient efforts were made to prioritise and locate flat 79, where Ms Hickman lived, which was directly above the home where the fire broke out.

“This is because, as an authority, we fully accept responsibility for the fire safety of all our council homes.

“The fact remains that the council did not have a Fire Risk Assessment for Lakanal in place on this date.

“Without this record, we can never categorically decide on the fire safety of the building before the fire happened.

She added “Since then, we have spent £62m on our fire risk assessment programme and associated fire safety works for all of our council housing in the borough.”

At sentencing, Southwark was fined £270,000 and told to pay costs of £300,000 for the failings.

Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman gave a statement criticising the fire brigade too, saying: “Those who ignored the Fire Brigade’s instructions to stay put escaped with their lives.

“Those who accepted the instructions to stay in their flat died.”

Since then, residents on Peckham’s Ledbury Estate discovered their block may never had received the strengthening work needed in the wake of safety concerns after the Ronan Point tower block collapse in Newham in 1968 – leaving them vulnerable to collapse if there was a gas explosion.

The towers will now be fully refurbished, with residents saying the

decision to save them and not demolition was ‘admirable’.

And tenants and leaseholders at Elephant and Castle’s two Arch Street blocks have, only this year, been forced to evacuate after its cladding was found by fire safety inspectors to be a death trap after an investigation by housing association L&Q. The blocks were only built in 2011.

Shortly after the Lakanal inquest concluded, six years ago, the News’ editor wrote of the findings: “The responsibility for ensuring that thousands of households are safe needs to be put in the hands of people who know what they are doing – not a bunch of bureaucrats who are unaware of what their job is. Many did not even turn up to training sessions…

“The shocking truth is, had Lakanal not have happened we wouldn’t have ever known that these procedures and safety measures were not being carried out.

“How many more authorities are failing in these areas and risking the lives for their tenants and what else is there of which we are unaware?”

Although great strides have been made by the council, when it comes to all buildings across Southwark and the rest of London, horrifyingly, it’s a question we still can’t answer.

‘WANTED’ AFTER A £4.1 M ROBBERY

A MAN known to have links to Elephant and Castle and Southwark is urgently wanted by police in connection with a 'violent' £4.1million jewellery robbery last month.

Officers for Surrey Police said on Tuesday they were “out searching” for Ciro Troyano, who is wanted for conspiracy to commit robbery and assault causing grievous bodily harm.

He is being sought after a salesman was robbed of millions of pounds worth of jewellery in a car-park in Staines-upon-Thames, Surrey, on May 13.

The victim was getting out of his car when he was reportedly robbed by a number of men, who assaulted him before making off with the bag containing the jewellery.

The salesman was left suffering “serious injuries” in the robbery.

Troyano is white, approximately 5ft 6in tall and of medium build.

Detectives said he is known to have links to the Southwark, Elephant and Castle and Brixton areas.

Detective Sergeant Kate Hyder, who is investigating the robbery, said: “We are urgently trying to track down Ciro Troyano, who is wanted to relation to this violent robbery.

Wrongly disposed of battery a likely cause of fire at Southwark’s recycling centre

A FIRE on Monday last week at Veolia’s recycling centre off the Old Kent Road was likely caused by a wrongly disposed of lithium battery, the company has said.

It issued a warning to Southwark residents to safely dispose of their waste after the fire at around 8.30pm at the Devon Street facility, which damaged 500kg of recyclable materials.

Two people safely left the building before the emergency services were called on June 17.

There were no injuries, added the London Fire Brigade – but it said the incident could have been worse if a sprinkler system hadn’t been in place.

Julie Angulo, General Manager for Veolia Southwark, cautioned of the dangers of wrong disposing of batteries, saying: “No batteries should ever be disposed of in household bins, instead

they can be brought to the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre for safe disposal.”

Ms Angulo said she would also like to “praise the quick action of our staff and take this opportunity to remind residents in Southwark to safely dispose of their waste.”

The centre resumed normal service by 3am the following morning.

The London Fire Brigade said the incident served as a reminder to businesses of the importance of sprinkler systems, as it helped to suppress the fire.

“As well as limiting fire damage and being potentially life-saving devices, sprinklers and other fire suppression systems help with business continuity by minimising disruption and allowing businesses to get back to normal as soon as possible,” said a service spokesperson.

Four fire engines and 25 firefighters were called to the scene and the fire was under control at around 10.44pm, the spokesperson added.

Woman rescued from London Bridge tracks

A WOMAN was rescued after falling onto the tracks at London Bridge on Friday evening, June 21.

The commuter reportedly fell into the gap between the train and the

platform while rushing for a train, sparking an emergency services response.

Luckily, the woman was pulled to safety before the train could pull away.

She was taken to hospital by paramedics to have her injuries assessed, but they were not thought

A DOCUMENTARY produced in Elephant and Castle has won plaudits for its unflinching account of the last five hours before a 59-year-old man becomes homeless while waiting for Universal Credit payments.

The short film Deleted, made by Old Kent Road-based Elicit Pictures, was conceived by producer Stephan Pierre Mitchell after a chance encounter with his neighbour, Ahmed Siddiqi.

Deleted was nominated at the British Independent Film Festival, awarded as Best Runner Up Short Documentary at Sunderland Shorts Film Festival, and will continue to be screened at both national and international film festivals throughout the rest of the year.

Stephan first met Ahmed after he knocked on the front door of his home in Brent asking for food.

“I was just baffled,” Stephan says, “he was so well spoken. I got to know him and wanted to ask him more about himself.

“I found out he was a middle class man who went through a bad divorce and this had been his first time signing onto Universal Credit.

“He had a medical issue and missed a job centre appointment. He only had a credit phone, not a contract one, and couldn’t get through to them.

“Because of that he got suspended for six months. At the end of the six months he tried to get back on the system and had a six-to-eight-week wait.

“He was evicted in this time and I filmed his last five hours. He wanted to do it to represent the thousands of people facing the same problems but it took his pride and everything he had to go in front of the camera.

“Like a lot of men in this situation he was so embarrassed at what had happened to him.”

After filming the documentary, Stephan and Ahmed stayed in touch but gradually lost contact as Ahmed’s circumstances worsened. It took another four months for Stephan to find him again.

In this time Ahmed had been sleeping rough, saying it was better than trying and failing to navigate the system.

He was spending all night travelling on buses or going into Casinos and late-night venues, and spending the

“To look at him, you wouldn’t necessarily know he was homeless’, says Stephan. “But he was getting ill

by January, and I had no contact from February.”

On May 11, the film was screened at the British Independent Film Festival,

at Leicester Square, with audience members in tears watching Ahmed’s story.

Stephan found out Ahmed passed away that same day. He had been found on a street corner, where he died after suffering pneumonia and cancer.

Stephan says the one thing he has

learned the most in making the documentary and getting to know Ahmed is that homelessness really can happen to anyone.

Ahmed, who was born in Manchester but came to London as a child, grew up in the capital in the ‘60s before marrying and having a family.

Voices Welcome registered as a charity last year and its founders say singing has the power to bring people together and have a transformative effect on vulnerable people’s lives.

In 2018, they held a trial session to see how a singing group at the refugee centre would be received and now, after a successful go and National Lottery Funding, they are able to extend the project for the next forty weeks.

Xenia Davis, the music director for the group, said: “We are delighted to have our first singing group up and running in Peckham.

“In my experience many refugees in the community have been unlikely to

The free sessions use the call and response method, so there is no need to be able to read music or have any prior musical knowledge.

The group is also keen for other local choir members to get involved, to help bring people from across the community together.

Bitter Wheat leaves bitter taste

JOHN MALKOVICH returning to the West End stage after more than 30 years in the world premier of Bitter Wheat, a play written and directed by David Mamet is a big deal, writes Michael Holland...

When the subject matter is the sleazy casting couch attitude of some Hollywood producers that created the #metoo movement, then opinions are divided and those differences of opinion could be heard as soon as the audience made its way to the exits.

Malkovich in a fat suit plays Barney Fein as the archetypal misanthrope, an Ebenezer Scrooge with a punchier line in put-downs, surrounded by Yes Men who do his bidding under fear of being exposed as slimy as himself. Everyone owes Fein a favour and he uses that power to corrupt.

Bitter Wheat opens with Fein defrauding a writer of his fee, and using his long-term PA as a do-as-Isay gopher. The audience finds it hilarious; if it was a Hugh Grant romcom we’d be on the floor in stitches. His doctor arrives with his supply of Viagra so Fein wants to use them - Soon. Cue a young actress from England who wants to make it in Hollywood in a film

called Dark Water.

The comedy now cuts with another edge. The laughter is now tinged with a mix of horror and guilt: the horror of the young girl being molested and threatened, the guilt because we are still laughing at the great lines. It was an unusual

dichotomy that left an uneasy feeling and bitter taste. I could hear sharp intakes of breath from my partner as the play sunk into darker waters. She explained that it revived memories of similar situations.

Malkovich is on throughout and

commands the stage, so everyone else becomes a bit player. And because he is such a big force Doon Mackichan has to work so much harder as the worn-down secretary, and hats off to Ioanna Kimbook in her West End debut as the actress, both managing to make their

presence felt.

But isn’t that the point? The Barney Feins of this world live like they are the only people that count and everyone else is there to be used and abused. Fein’s life is played out as a series of movie pitches. Even when his world comes crashing down he is thinking about the film that will come of it.

And when he is ruined he sees no blame in himself other than, ‘it’s all because I’m fat’.

Mamet is not condoning Fein’s behaviour, nor condemning - He has written about what happens in life for the theatre so we can discuss it. Nevertheless, one day after my initial thoughts of actually liking the Malkovich character because of his don’t care attitude, they have now changed. Feins should not be made likeable, for any reason.

Bitter Wheat is seriously funny and this rankles. It ended with a joke and I am torn.

Cutting Edge cuts a slice of the past

THE GROSVENOR School was founded in Pimlico in 1925 and played a key role in Britain’s contribu-tion to modern art, writes Michael Holland...

It quickly became a leading force in printmaking, and particularly linocuts. The students, including Sybil Andrews, Cyril Power, Lill Tschudi, William Greengrass and Leonard Beaumont, became renowned for their iconic prints that brought to life the vibe of the interwar years.

In the Cutting Edge: Modernist British Printmaking exhibition it is not difficult to see the school’s Soviet references with striking images getting a message across quickly, and its affinity with the Art Deco movement. It is not a chronological exhibition, but themed. Each room looks at a different aspect of the British printmakers output: work, sport, urban living, pastoral life, with London and transport taking up two rooms for a grand finale.

Throughout there is a real feeling of motion in the works, whether it be athletes chasing a ball, hors-es jumping fences, commuters on

escalators or tube trains coming into the station there is a vibrancy that elicits extra attention: will he reach that shot? Will they make that jump?

Will I ever escape this vortex of vertiginous movement I find myself in?

For me, however, the best part of the Cutting Edge exhibition is its nostalgic reminder of old post-ers that I remember before glossy became the norm, so my favourite works were by Cyril Power and Sybil Andrews because I am always drawn to that which I can relate to.

The exhibition features original tools, lino blocks and studies showing how the school revolutionised the process which involved layering up vivid inks in order to produce their distinctive and colourful ‘pop’ version of modernism.

series and experimental films to her colourful graphic works and striking geometric paintings. It will open alongside a selection of new free displays across Tate Modern, including Sol LeWitt, David Goldblatt and Franciszka and Stefan Themerson.

Dóra Maurer emerged as part of a

generation of avant garde Hungarian artists in the 1960s, pursuing highly experimental work in parallel to the ‘official’ art system of the socialist regime. As an artist, teacher and curator she developed an international network across Europe and became a hugely influential figure for younger artists. The five room show at Tate Modern will span this diverse career, focusing on the themes of movement, displacement, perception and transformation that she continues to explore in her work today.

Trained as a graphic artist and printmaker in the 1950s, Maurer quickly began pushing the medium to its limits in her early works. The innovative Seven Foldings 1975, for example, involved folding an aluminium printing plate seven times before taking an impression. She then moved towards conceptual photographic series and experimental filmmaking, often exploring abstract sequences and the analysis of everyday gestures. Tate Modern will showcase five of these films from the 1970s and 80s, including Triolets 1981 and Timing 1973/1980, which feature the repetition of activities, movements

and rotations that have become characteristic of Maurer’s practice.

As her work became more geometric and abstract, Maurer explored systembased painting and the way in which geometric forms are affected by colour and perception. In 1983, a commission for a site-specific project at Schloss Buchberg, near Vienna, gave her the opportunity to expand her painting into three-dimensional space, marking an important shift in her work.

Alongside documentation of this commission and several dynamic paintings from the 1980s and 90s, Tate Modern’s exhibition will culminate in a room of Maurer’s recent works, most of which have never been shown in the UK. These large-scale paintings are characterised by bold colour and geometric forms, including Stage II 2016, a six-metre-long work in which brightly coloured shapes create a sense of rhythmic three-dimensional movement through space.

This exhibition joins many new free displays opening at Tate Modern in July and August. These will include a series of graphic woodcut prints by Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) and a room of recently acquired photograms,

films, painting and drawings by Polish émigré artists Franciszka Themerson (1907–88) and Stefan Themerson (1910–88).

New photography displays will include Mitch Epstein’s (b.1952) large-scale photographs of American industry and landscape, Naoya Hatakeyama’s (born 1958) atmospheric nocturnal streetscapes, and David Goldblatt’s (1930-2018) powerful images of apartheid South Africa.

Dóra Maurer is curated by Juliet Bingham, Curator International Art and Carly Whitefield, Assistant Curator Film, and is supported by the Dóra Maurer Exhibition Supporters Circle. It will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue from Tate Publishing. A film programme placing Maurer’s work in the context of the experimental Béla Balázs Studió in Budapest takes place in January 2020 alongside an inconversation between Dóra Maurer and Frances Morris, Director, Tate Modern, Bankside, SE1 From 5 August 2019 to 5 July 2020.

his week there has been a notable rise in Landlords exploring the sales option.

Valuations and instructions are at record levels for sales which is giving buyers plenty of choice. This seemingly cools the market for a period as each week new and tempting properties prolong any immediate commitment. Phoenix become Dulwich Hamlet WFC from next season EXCLUSIVE

THE DULWICH Hamlet community have been praised for being “incredibly supportive” by one of the players who will represent their new women’s side next season.

Zoe Elmore was part of an AFC Phoenix side that will play as Hamlet from next season. Phoenix, who trained until last season on Clapham Common, was founded in 2010 and has enjoyed great success in recent times. Since winning promotion to the London & South East Premier Division they have achieved consecutive second-place finishes, won the League Cup and been involved in another final.

Their squad contains several exprofessionals and a few who have previously attended national training camps. The reserve team has also

tasted promotion success and won two cups.

However, the club struggled with the fact that it was entirely funded out of the pockets of its players and staff.

Therefore, it needed sponsorship or to merge with a men’s club.

Elmore reflected on Phoenix’s success on the field.

“It’s just a really great environment, I’m actually at a barbecue with all the girls right now,” she said when she spoke to the News on last Sunday. “We choose to spend time with each other off the pitch. I don’t see that with many other clubs.

“Girls join us and tell us horror stories about other coaches and how they’ve been treated, and we hear how players from other teams speak to each other and to the referees. We’re not like that and we’ve managed to cultivate a really good group. I think that attracts and retains good players. We’re like a big family.”

On the merge with Hamlet, Elmore said: “I think the deciding factor was

that the club ethos was aligned to ours.”

She placed particular emphasis on Dulwich’s inclusive approach matching Phoenix’s international make-up.

Furthermore, Dulwich’s initiatives such as the On the Ball campaign and the Red Box Project – designed to tackle period poverty – convinced the Phoenix players that Hamlet was a club genuinely committed to promoting gender equality in football, rather than simply taking on a women’s team as a gesture.

Dulwich’s supporters also played an important role in bringing the merge about. Elmore expressed her excitement at playing in front of those fans.

“On a good day we would normally have maybe five people watching,” she continued, “and that’s husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends and maybe the occasional parent. But at Hamlet they’ve said we might get a couple of hundred people down so we were all

laughing about it. It’ll definitely be a departure from what we’re used to but we love it.

“I can’t even tell you how great the support has been – not just from the chairman but also the 12th Man, the merchandise guys, the community outreach officers – everyone has been so incredibly supportive. The support from the entire Dulwich community has been incredible. Even looking at the tweets and announcements there’s been nothing negative and pure enthusiasm.”

There were of course material benefits to joining Hamlet. Dulwich’s facilities and stadium will help attract players, and the money generated from Dulwich’s various income streams will help the women’s side realise its ambition – promotion to the National League next season. Elmore added: “We wanted to go to a club that really believes in what we want to accomplish and is willing to support us in that”.

“We came from absolutely nothing [in a football sense] so even a little

support is fantastic. We joke about it but we didn’t even have matching kits, so that’s the level we’re coming from.

“Dulwich is a big club, they have a massive following, so I think they have a duty to support the women’s game.

I’m confident in the long-term sustainability, and I’m hoping that we support the club as well.”

The merge between AFC Phoenix and Dulwich Hamlet appears to be a match made in heaven. Hopefully, with their newfound support the women’s side can earn the promotion that they so crave and encourage local women to get involved in the sport. Recruitment is a must for the team and trials will be taking place that locals can attend.

Dulwich Hamlet Women’s FC will play on Sundays and Wednesdays, with all league games covered by a Dulwich Hamlet season ticket. Those without a season ticket will pay £4 (adults) and £2 (concessions), with U13s watching for free.

Lower expectations could help Lions Alex Pearce wants the squad to “attack” every day in training

ALEX PEARCE admits not everything was quite right at Millwall last season – and urged his team-mates to go “full throttle” from the first day of preparations for the new campaign.

The Lions squad were back at Calmont Road on Tuesday ahead of the 2019-20 Championship opener against Preston at The Den on August 3.

Millwall finished 21st last season after revelations from Neil Harris about problems with some players in the squad.

Pearce feels the lower expectations after a difficult campaign could benefit Millwall ahead of a third successive season in the second tier.

Pearce’s performances were a positive after his loan move from Derby last January. After conceding 39 goals in the first half of the season Millwall conceded only 25 in the second following the arrival of the centre-back.

“People say this and that about last season but on the whole I thoroughly enjoyed my time here,” Pearce told the News this week. “From the moment I came in last January the aim for me was to help the club stay in the division. That’s what we achieved.

“Yes, there were things that weren’t right at the football club,

fundamentally, and yes the manager has looked to put it right. This season we’ll be looking to improve on last season and certainly be better than where we were.

“I think that [lower expectations] might help us, going under the radar a little bit. I think Millwall could be a club that do that and realise where we are in the division. We’re not one of the big-spending clubs in the league but that doesn’t mean we can’t do things in the proper way.

“That’s what the manager preaches.

We want to set high standards this season and go into it in high spirits.

“It’s good to have an opinion at times and we’ve got lads in the dressing room that have got that. I’m one of them, yeah. You’ve got to set the standards in training, that’s everyone in the group that needs to be at it because that’s what takes you into the games.

“That’s a vital part of how well we’ll do this year. We’ve got to look at how we train and that starts in pre-season.

“It’s always like the first day back at school. It’s been a long break for me, eight weeks in total which has been nice to spend some time with the family. We just had a little one recently.

“But the longer the off-season goes on the more you start thinking about pre-season and it has arrived. We’re all chomping at the bit.

“Every day will be tough in preseason. You have to have an attitude that you’re going to attack each day and try to get as fit as possible. That’s the ultimate aim and you don’t get that

by going half-hearted at anything during pre-season. You have to go full throttle and get the maximum benefit out of it.

“When I started at seventeen or eighteen years of age players would come back in having put on weight and they would use the pre-season to get themselves in shape. You can’t do that now, you need to come back fighting fit.

“If you don’t then you’re behind.”

Pearce completed his permanent free-transfer move from the Rams in May. He continued: “It was a no-brainer for me after the loan spell going so well for me and the team collectively.

We stayed up, which was what the aim was when I came here.

“I thought I wanted to keep that going and sign permanently, and have a right go at it this year.

“There was some interest, yes. But I only ever wanted to sign for Millwall and it was just about getting a deal done with the club as soon as possible and getting focused on the new challenge coming up.

“It meant as well I could get away and enjoy my summer knowing it was all wrapped up.”

Former Reading defender Pearce was the only new signing on the first day back after the summer break.

But he expects things to get a lot busier as the window progresses, including the Lions possibly recruiting another centre-back.

“It’s quiet at the moment and that’s generally how the window works,” he said. “There are only a few deals being

done because I think agents set the bar very high for their players. Clubs aren’t quite willing to match that so there’s a bit of a settling-down period where things go pretty quiet for a while.

“But towards the back end of the window things heat up again because people need to move. The last few days of the window will be manic as it always is.

“You’ve got good centre-halves here: me, Jake [Cooper], Shaun Hutchinson as well. We’ve got good competition for places and if the manager decides to bring one more in that’s absolutely fine, that’s good for the club in general.

“Whatever people decide to do that’s fine but as a player you need to get yourself right first before trying to start to help others.

“It might be a case that we might get a few lads through the door in the latter part of the window and I’m sure

the manager will be working hard on the recruitment side of things.”

Harris called a meeting with senior and under-23 players early on Tuesday setting out what he expected from them over the course of their preparation period before the league starts in August.

But there were no other targets set for the season.

Pearce added: “It’s an old cliché but in the Championship it’s so true that you just have to take one game at a time. You cannot look too far ahead because you can come unstuck.

“We could beat anyone in this league, we’ve proven that with vital wins against teams that we probably shouldn’t have beaten on paper.

“You’ve got to make sure that on that day you turn up and give your best performance. Hopefully over the course of the season you pick up enough points.”

Millwall up for challenge of proving doubters wrong

NEIL HARRIS believes Millwall are already being written off this season – but said the Lions won’t “shy away” from the challenge of proving people wrong.

Millwall are currently fourth favourites for relegation from the Championship, with only Reading, Charlton and Barnsley shorter odds for the drop.

It was a different story last August when after a good transfer window,

before the sale of George Saville to Middlesbrough, there was a feeling that they could build on their eightplace finish.

“I loved it last summer, the excitement around it and the buzz. The disappointment last year was only based on poor form, poor results by us as a group and individuals as well,” Harris said.

“That’s because the standards had been set so high we wanted it again. It was three years of building success, almost unrivalled success as a club, it had only happened a couple of times in

the past. We set the world alight and people started taking note and then we dipped again.

“Well if we can rise the next three years I’ll be delighted.

“I said to the players that we’ll be better than last year, 100 per cent we’ll be better. We will get good characters in, good players in. I am clear on how I want to play and what I want to do and how adaptable I want to be.

“I know what good players I’ve got.

“It’s the first group we’ve had in about three years where we’re really excited about them. We know we have to be patient because the demands of Championship football are so high.

The level of quality is ridiculously high.

“They know the standards they have to reach but they will certainly be given an opportunity throughout the whole of pre-season to show their qualities.

“We saw George and Billy appear in the first team – but that doesn’t mean they’re first-team players now. They have a long way to go.

“But we’re just trying to show that pathway is there. It was tough to integrate players last year in a struggling side. It’s much easier to do when things are going well and the atmosphere in the stadium is first class and the players are high and buzzing.

You can then add the odd youngster into the group.

“So it’s just managing that as well.

Certainly over the course of preseason we’ll be looking at three, four, maybe five if not more boys going to Concord to play, playing a behindclosed-doors game here and then going to Portugal as well.

“Ryan Sandford as a goalkeeper has the opportunity to show his qualities.

I’ve spoken publicly about him not being ready for the first team but he’s got a good future. Him training as a first-team goalkeeper, whether it’s a few days or a few weeks, will do him the world of good.”

“We just need to add quality to that.

“Realism this year? Yeah, I think there will be. We’ll be back to being the underdog, people are writing us off already.

“People were writing us off towards the end of last season when we were on a bad run and thought we were going to slip into relegation. We didn’t, we stood strong and got over the line by hook or by crook.

“That’s what we have to do at this club. We’re certainly up for the challenge of proving people wrong.

We’ll never shy away from that challenge.”

MILLWALL FEEL they have their best group of young players in three years – but Neil Harris stressed the club will be “patient” with them.

Billy Mitchell, 18, and George Alexander, 17, made their senior competitive debuts on the last day of last season in the 1-0 defeat at Wigan.

Alexander was on the bench for the epic 3-2 win over Everton in the fourth round of the FA Cup, while the club tied Jesse Debrah, Isaac Olaofe, Ryan Sandford and Danny McNamara to deals for at least the 2019-20 season.

MILLWALL ARE interested in signing Connor Mahoney from Premier League side Bournemouth.

Mahoney, 22, has been on the Lions’ radar for some time as Neil Harris looks to add more attacking players to his squad.

Former Accrington Stanley and Blackburn winger Mahoney spent last season on loan at Birmingham City where he scored twice in 30 league games.

He joined the Cherries from Blackburn in 2017 with the southcoast club paying £425,000 for him.

both in the FA Cup, and knows he may have to leave for first-team football.

“I will reiterate to the gaffer (Howe) that I need to be playing week in, week out,” Mahoney said last season.

“I think this season I have proved to a lot of people that I should be in a good environment and playing football each week.”

Harris also wants to sign Matt Smith from Mark Warburton’s QPR and there have been discussions between the clubs for the 6ft 6ins target man.

Lee Gregory’s move to Stoke City was officially confirmed this week after Steve Morison’s switch to Shrewsbury.

Harris was asked this week if he was surprised by the slow pace of the transfer market so far and said: “If I’m being honest, you never know.”

Harris added: “I speak to senior managers like Mark Warburton and [Ipswich’s] Paul Lambert, people like that. They’ve got a lot more knowledge than me or someone like [Bristol City manager] Lee Johnson,

and they’re not sure where it’s going and why it’s been so slow.

“Ultimately if clubs aren’t spending money then you don’t get the knock-on effect. So if Premier League Clubs aren’t buying Championship players, Championship clubs then don’t have money to spend.

“Financial fair play dictates that there are only a certain amount of clubs that can spend money in the division. If clubs don’t want to let players go because they can’t get anyone in, it’s very difficult.

“I always like to try and be as honest as I can, I thought we might have had another player or two in so far. I never expected us to be able to go and get six or seven before [the start of pre-season].”

ALEX PEARCE could be in line for an international call-up this season – if he’s playing regularly for the Lions.

Pearce has seven caps for the Republic of Ireland, who he qualifies to play for through his grandparents.

He also has grandparents from Scotland, and represented the Tartan Army at under-21 level.

But he made his senior Ireland debut in 2012 and has scored two goals. Pearce revealed that he has spoken to current Ireland manager Mick McCarthy.

Wallingford-born Pearce, 30, wasn’t a regular at Derby, which affected his international chances, but his move to Millwall potentially offers him a route back to representing his country.

“Mick McCarthy rang me when he first got the job and it was a very good phone call,” Pearce said. “He said, ‘you need to be playing firstteam football and if you are doing that then you possibly could have a chance’.

“That’s all I can do, just focus on that, on playing regularly and as well as I can for Millwall. That stuff is bonus. Focus on your bread and butter, which is your club football.

“Hopefully [an international callup] comes after.”

Meanwhile Pearce could take over as club captain from Steve Morison, but that has yet to be discussed.

He said: “We don’t know, honestly, no one knows anything about that.

It’s well known I was given the captain’s armband at times last season and it was a great honour and privilege to wear it.

“If I get that honour again I’ll wear it with pride and try to do the best I can. But, this is the first week of preseason and that’s not in my thinking at the moment. My thinking is just to get as fit as possible for the start of the season and go from there.”
