More than 100 people living in 52 flats at 26 and 28 Arch Street were told last month the new build blocks built in 2011 by Willmot Dixon were unsafe after all due to its external classing.

Known as ‘high pressure laminate’, this is not the same as the aluminium used in Grenfell tower, but it is highly

combustible when used with certain combinations of materials.

After a government review found it to be high risk, it was banned from being used in new builds. A fire safety engineer who inspected Arch Street for L&Q said in his report that the cladding would mean a fire could spread rapidly across the entire building.

Across L&Q’s portfolio, a £50 million fund has been set aside to remove dangerous cladding from its properties.

Mr Brown said L&Q was working with Wilmot Dixon to ensure the building was made safe and that it also wanted to ‘make good’ on long-term issues that have left residents frustrated

including leaks, heating and security concerns.

According to Fossil Free UK, a campaign group lobbying for organisations to divest from fossil fuels, the Parliamentary Pension Fund, the pension fund for MPs, holds £11.68m shares in fossil fuel company BP Plc, its largest single holding, and £10.95m in Royal Dutch Shell as of 2018.

The Dulwich and West Norwood MP said: “Part of the system change we need to see involves taking money out of dirty, damaging,

exploitative fossil fuel extraction.

“And we can do something about that here in this place. Both of my local councils, Lambeth and Southwark, have committed to divest their pension funds out of fossil fuels, yet our parliamentary pension funds remain invested in fossil fuels, despite a hundred members writing to the trustees last year calling on them to divest and remove our money from fossil fuels and invest it in sustainable industries.

“I call on all members here to join that call. We need the government to act comprehensively at the scale required by an emergency.

“Climate change demands that it is the prism and the underpinning principle of all our political and economic decision making.”

Hayes has also praised her daughter for joining thousands of school age children striking on Fridays to demand more action on climate change.

The Southwark News is proud to be the only independent, paid for newspaper in London.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

Between May 24 and June 5, 2019, the Liberal Democrats gained 104 new members in Southwark, and thirteen new supporters.

The party’s local leader, Councillor Anood Al-Samerai, said ‘momentum is very much with us now’.

“It comes from people respecting us for boldly proclaiming our core values of internationalism, openness, radical environmentalism and a tolerant, fairer and more equal society,” she said.

“We’ll continue to fight for our values and urge anyone that shares our values to step up and join us in that fight.”

A “TRUE Bermondsey boy” who sadly passed away at only 68-yearsold has lived up to the name – by asking his wife to pay for traditional pie ‘n’ mash with jellied eels for everyone at his funeral.

Stephen Moore, a keen fisherman and Rolling Stones fan, passed away from complications relating to a chronic lung condition in May after being hospitalised from a fall in March.

But prior to passing away, the former Burgess Park keeper made family and friends promise that people would not come to his funeral being sad – because instead he wanted them to laugh.

“He made my son promise - this is his sense of humour - he loved the Rolling Stones, so the first song they have to play is Paint it Black, and then the second Frank Sinatra, My Way,” said his doting wife of 48-years, Josie.

“But then the last song is Johnny Cash, Ring of Fire.

“He said, ‘I want people to laugh, I don’t want them coming to my funeral and being sad, I want them to have a laugh.’”

The Bermondsey Pie n Mash company, which Stephen chose to serve the traditional food at his funeral, said: “Stephen had been a loyal customer for the past year, ever since we opened.

The company have received an order for 80 pie ‘n’ mash with jellied eels.

“He requested that we serve the food at his funeral because he used to buy his pie and mash from us. It so sad to hear that he’s passed away.”

A TIME capsule will be buried in Southwark Park next week to mark the 150th anniversary of the park.

The event, organised by the Southwark Park Association, will see the time capsule buried by patrons of the park and councillors 150 years on from the unveiling of the green space on June 19, 1869.

Alongside the new time capsule, an older time capsule which was buried at the park’s entrance in 2000, which includes a copy of the News from that year, will be dug up and relocated, as the area is due to be landscaped under council plans.

It takes place from noon at the site of the park’s new café on Wednesday, June 19.

The green space, the first municipal park in the borough, was created for the people of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe when the areas were still sites of industry, which would often see them blanketed with polluted air and smog.

Local author, Mary Gibson, sets many scenes in her novels in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, including the park, as it was a central part of her childhood.

She told the News: “My childhood memories of Southwark Park in the fifties and sixties are still vivid.

“I remember hours spent queuing for the Lido on hot days or daring each other to venture into the forbidden rose garden, risking the wrath of the Parkie!

“Many of my generation share such nostalgic memories of those days when the park felt like a piece of ‘the country’ in

and her husband’s name on it too.

Stephen himself had a tattoo, as well – one of his beloved Rolling Stones. The other, says Josie, “was an eagle that said ‘Josie forever’. “He had it done for our engagement party,” says Josie, when the sweethearts were just twenty-years-old.

Josie, who went to Bacon’s College with Stephen, paid tribute to her husband’s “wicked sense of humour.”

“Everyone liked him, he got on with everybody,” she said. “He was a very cheeky chappy, everyone just knew he

loved a laugh.”

In later years, the father and grandfather was using a mobility scooter. But always up for fun, he’d use it to race friends around Southwark Park.

“There’s a neighbour [of ours] who’s got a mobility scooter, and my Stephen had one as well,” says Josie. “They used to race one another around Southwark Park!”

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, Neil Coyle, paid tribute to the hard-work of volunteers who help to run the park and said he hoped it would be around for another 150 years.

“It is one of the green jewels in Southwark’s crown as well as being a great venue for excellent local events that

park near to the Canada Estate, with family members releasing balloons in the shape of doves.

THE FATHER of a teenager stabbed to death outside a tube station in Clapham has launched a new charity to help tackle youth violence.

Olumide Wole-Madariola said he hoped the new Malcolm MideMadariola World Foundation, set up by Malcolm’s family, would help educate young people about the dangers of knife crime and violence, and support them to build a positive future.

The charity was launched on Saturday, June 8, at Phoenix Community Centre in Upper Norwood.

Malcolm died outside Clapham South tube station in November last year after defending a friend during an argument. He would have turned eighteen on May 1.

His father, Olumide, said: “Far too many families have had to suffer the life changing and deeply painful consequences of these violent and tragic attacks.

“We want to use our experience as a family to help provide more education to young people on the real impact of their actions to try

and ensure that other families don’t have to suffer as we have.

“We want to help provide young people with more opportunities to help build a safer and more promising future for themselves, away from violence.”

“We all must do something to stop the madness and this is just our quota” Malcolm’s murderer, a seventeenyear-old boy, was found guilty at the Old Bailey and will be sentenced on July 5.

During the trial, the court heard Malcolm was stabbed three times, including directly in the heart, after the dispute between two groups.

Malcolm, a former Harris Academy student in Peckham who had been attending college, was standing up for another boy he had only known for six weeks when he was attacked with a hunting knife.

At the time of his death, the executive principal of his former school paid tribute to Malcolm, describing him as an ‘excellent role model’ with a ‘dedicated work ethic’ who ‘balanced a calm, mature manner with a wonderful sense of humour and an infectious smile’.

CARE QUALITY COMMISSION TELLS KING’S TRUST THAT IT ‘REQUIRES IMPROVEMENT’

KING’S COLLEGE Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been told it ‘requires improvement’, after its latest Care Quality Commission inspection found that - despite examples of outstanding work - ‘in some areas the trust has gone backwards’.

This means the trust’s overall rating is unchanged since its last inspection.

Across the key areas evaluated, it was rated ‘requires improvement’ for being safe, effective, responsive and well-led, while a ‘good’ rating was given for being caring, following visits in January and February of this year.

Sites the trust manages include King’s College Hospital, Princess Royal University Hospital, Orpington Hospital, Queen’ Mary’s Hospital and satellite dialysis units across south London.

It currently has the worst financial deficit of any NHS Trust in the country, with £193 million projected for this financial year.

At King’s College Hospital specifically, inspector’s rated services overall as ‘requires improvement’.

They witnessed inconsistency in staff completing mandatory training, equipment checks, patient privacy, infection control, completion of patient risk assessments, waiting times, staff morale, communication between staff and management.

England’s chief inspector of hospitals, Professor Ted Baker, said it was ‘disappointing that there has been no overall improvement’.

“The trust must take action in response to this report to address this.”

One area where the trust has deteriorated is in urgent care and the emergency department.

Performances at Denmark Hill against national accident and emergency targets and referral to treatment standards are among the worst in the country – with cancer treatment targets deteriorating over the last twelve months.

Between October and December 2018 there were 580 operations cancelled on the day.

For day surgery, the majority of cases involved patients not attending, but for main surgery this was usually down to lack of available beds.

Progress has been made in other areas.

The number of complaints received by the hospital has reduced by eight per cent and staff retention has also improved.

Maternity services and end of life care at King’s have both improved from requires improvement to good.

in year-on-year cases of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) a type of brain damage in babies caused by lack of blood and oxygen to the brain.

The number of cases between January and December 2018 was nearly three times higher than in the same period in 2017. In 2017, ten babies suffered HIE, but the following year this rose to 27, attributed to the complex cases treated by the hospital.

“King’s College Hospital is a referral centre for women with high-risk pregnancies,” a spokesperson for the trust told the News.

“Nationally, the incidence of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in babies born at full term is between one and three cases in every 1,000 deliveries.

“We have around 10,000 births across both of our sites each year, so our figure is

within the expected range.

“However, we always aspire to have fewer cases, in line with national targets.”

Staff morale and communication between management and staff, which had been a key area of concern in the last inspection, also showed improvement.

But there are worrying pockets of dissatisfaction, especially from administrative staff and those who are from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Twenty-two per cent of staff who identified as BME said they had ‘personally experienced discrimination at work from a manager, team leader, or other colleagues’ in 2017, compared with nine per cent of white staff.

King’s Trust were contacted just before going to press in regard to the inspection, but were unable to respond in time.

AN SE1 magistrate who was involved in a £61,500 fraud along with her boyfriend and his companion was sentenced on Friday June 7.

Thirty-eight-year old magistrate Alia Arain, of the Albert Embankment, was sentenced to ten months in jail for conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.

Her sentence was suspended for eighteen months, although she must also carry out 150 hours’ unpaid work and pay a £140 surcharge.

Her boyfriend, Ashad Adams, 40, from Catford’s Ardoch Road, was jailed for three years and three months for his part in the fraud and for also possessing a small quantity of cannabis and breaching a suspended sentence.

The third fraudster, Adams’ friend Mohamed Shalim Ahmed, of Rainham, Essex, was also sentenced to nine months behind bars – suspended for twelve – for money laundering and converting criminal property.

Detectives explained that magistrate Arain and her partner Adams defrauded Arain’s landlady of the money by forging her signature on a cheque posted to their address by mistake.

The money was then paid into Ahmed’s account in February last year.

The court was told the magistrate and her boyfriend had planned to go on holiday with the laundered money – but were uncovered by police.

Acting Commander Alexis Boon, of the Met, said the trio’s activities were uncovered when Adams and Ahmed tried to launder a large portion of cash by changing it into euros at Heathrow airport.

When police arrived at the exchange bureau, they discovered Adams – the magistates’ boyfriend – owed unpaid court fines.

His pal, Ahmed, paid the fines off – using the money that unknown to police had been fraudulently obtained.

Police arrested Adams for hiring a car to the airport while disqualified – for which he was released without action.

But at the same time they also found the landlady’s chequebook and a bank statement inside the glove box – sparking a police search at Adams’ home.

Detectives seized £3,000 that Adams had on him at the time under proceeds of crime laws.

Meanwhile Ahmed, not yet linked to any crimes, set about spending the rest

Shockingly, police said Ahmed had the nerve to call the Action Fraud hotline to claim he had been a victim of fraud, as his bank did not clear the cheque, leaving him £40,000 overdrawn.

When police continued their inquiries, they uncovered a series of recordings on Adams’ mobile which were incriminating evidence of his, Arain’s and Ahmed’s crimes.

In one, Arain and Adams discuss a “signature specimen” and the location of the chequebook.

In another, the magistrate is said to have advised her boyfriend of items to buy to launder the money – and of the couple’s intention to start a new life with the fraud money.

When police interviewed Arain under caution in April 2018, she denied being involved in the fraud, saying that pal Ahmed planted evidence at her flat.

She also denied knowing her boyfriend’s whereabouts after he failed

to appear at an appointment with police.

But when detectives went to her address on July 13, 2018 to search it, they found him inside. His mobile phone also contained incriminating recordings discussing the investigation, police said.

Officers arrested Adams with conspiracy to commit fraud two days later. Ahmed and Arain were charged of their crimes in September.

Acting Commander Boon said: “This group wholeheartedly believed they would pull off their crime and end up with a third of the proceeds each, but they didn’t count on the diligence of money exchange bureau staff.

“The actions of staff at the money exchange bureau were superb – they have helped ensure that a considerable fraud was stopped and the culprits held to account.

“The victim has been reimbursed the money by her bank, meanwhile Ahmed continues to owe almost £50,000 to his bank.”

DENMARK HILL ‘DRUG DEALER’ JAILED AFTER POLICE FOUND £5,000 WORTH OF HEROIN AND CRACK

A DRUG dealer from Denmark Hill who thought he could evade police because he wasn't directly handling his wares has been jailed for three years, as police say they are now able to target 'those higher up the chain'.

Feroze Khan, aged 26, from Denmark Hill, dealt crack cocaine and heroin using dedicated mobile phone lines between June 2018 and May of this year.

Police began investigating him as part

of their activities to combat drugs lines, where those controlling the supply do not always come into direct contact with those selling-on the drugs.

Even though Khan wasn't directly selling on the drugs, police said they were able to prove Khan was involved in setting up the supply.

Khan first came to officers' attention after he sped off when police tried to stop him on Denmark Hill while in a blue Mercedes.

Police suspected he was involved in drugs, and searched several addresses under warrant.

In one flat, in East Dulwich, a specialist police dog helped find a green fleece in the wardrobe with 509 wraps of crack cocaine and 84 wraps of heroin with a street value of more than £5,000.

After finding evidence linking these drugs to Khan, his home was searched and he was arrested last month.

While in custody he pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of a Class A drug at Camberwell Magistrates' Court on May 18, 2019.

He was sentenced to three years in prison on June 10 at Inner London Crown Court and will also be subject to

a ten year criminal behaviour order when released from prison.

Detective Constable Raymond Sekalongo said: “Khan thought he could evade police because he wasn’t directly involved in the handling of drugs but we are now able to target those higher up the chain and prove their involvement.

“Drug dealing is closely linked with violence we see on our streets. We will deal robustly with those who seek to sell drugs, exploit young people and target the most vulnerable within our communities for the sole purpose of financial gain."

PLANS TO cut the speed limit to 20mph on key inner-city London roads including areas in Southwark were unveiled last week.

TfL is proposing the limit on the main routes it operates in inner London, including Borough High Street, Great Dover Street and parts of Druid Street and Bermondsey Street.

The moves comes after 128 people were killed on the capital’s streets in

speed-related collisions in the past three years, and forms part of a plan to eliminate deaths and serious injury from the transport network by 2041.

Speed cameras will be re-calibrated around the routes, where the changes are due to come into force, leaving motorists breaking the limit facing fines and license points.

101-year-old who was everyone’s Nan

TRIBUTES HAVE poured in from family and friends to the “loveliest and friendliest” Bermondsey lady who has passed away aged 101.

Hilda McCarthy, a former civil servant, was a regular sight down Bermondsey’s Blue. Every week she would go down to Dougal’s hairdressers to get her hair done, pushing along her trolley.

But sometimes she wouldn’t come back for hours, because she enjoyed talking to them so much.

“She used to come back and say, ‘I was there ages, they asked me about the war!’” laughs her next-door-neighbour of 38 years on the Pedworth Estate, Christine Wiszk.

She had always been a sociable and friendly person, two of her sons tell the News.

When her husband was overseas, “he used to send home his wage packet every week. He said, ‘use it for a deposit for a house in Eltham,” says her son Pat, who now lives in Yorkshire.

“But when he came home she’d bought a piano so that everyone could have a party. And no-one could even play the piano!”

The popular local figure loved darts and good, old-fashioned pie and mash.

“She was one of the old school,” says Christine.

“She never had a bad word to say about anybody, she was the friendliest lady.”

Born in August 1917, Hilda lived through some of the biggest events in

July 10.

The plans are due to come into force

by May next year.

Separate TfL projects will see part of Tooley Street and roads surrounding the Elephant and Castle also have their speed cut to 20mph.

Southwark Street and St Thomas Street, which are TfL managed, already have a speed limit of 20mph.

Once, says her son Pat, she went down to the air-raid shelter as a German Doodlebug was flying overhead.

“She said, she went down with brown hair and came back up completely grey!” he tells the News.

Hilda, who lived in Bermondsey all her life had five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and even two great-great grandchildren – but even became known as ‘nan’ in all but name to her neighbour’s children.

“We moved in at roughly the same time on this estate when it had just been built. My daughter was two years old.

She’s 40 now,” Christine told the News.

“Anytime she saw the kids, she used to give them ice lollies over the fence. They called her Nan, she lived there so long.”

Despite being 101 when she passed away in May, the popular great-greatgrandmother kept active and fit. She never needed a carer, and would cook, clean and do all of her washing herself.

“You never would’ve guessed she was 101,” both Pat and Christine separately said.

The secret to a healthy old age, she used to tell loved ones, was porridge in the morning – and never more than one single scotch and lemonade of a nighttime.

When Hilda’s funeral was held on June 4, the funeral cars had an impromptu procession along the Blue.

As a sign of respect, council workers who knew Hilda went and swept the area before the funeral cars passed. “So when we drove with cars down there it was nice and clean,” says Pat.

Football legend warns fellow diabetics of the danger of losing a foot

EX-SPURS AND England footballer Gary Mabbutt MBE is among the patients helping to raise awareness of the importance of foot health for people with diabetes.

Mabbutt was at King’s College Hospital’s Diabetic Foot Clinic during a visit from shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth, as patients and doctors showed how specialist care at the Denmark Hill hospital is reducing the number of amputations from diabetes-related complications.

A CCTV image has been released by police as they investigate a suspected rapist, whom they believe could be responsible for three attacks in Greenwich and Lewisham.

Detective Chief Inspector Angela Craggs, who is leading inquiries, said: “The CCTV image shows an image of a male that we would like to speak to, who we believe may be able to assist our investigation.

“If this is you or if you know who this person is, please contact us."

Police are on the hunt for a suspect whom they think may have carried out an attempted rape in a Deptford park, a rape on a Greenwich footbridge and another attempted rape on Blackheath Common.

Detectives from the Met’s South East Command Unit said they have 'formally linked' the attempted rape on the Common and the rape along a footbridge near Tunnel Avenue in Greenwich.

The attack in Margaret McMillan Park in Deptford, which officers say took place in the early hours of Friday June 7, is not yet formally linked but police ‘retain an open mind as to whether this is linked to the earlier two incidents.'

They have released an image of a man on a bike whom they would like to identify in connection with their inquiries.

The image was taken by a CCTV camera in the SE10 area on Saturday, 2 June.

Although police concede it is not of the highest quality, it shows the man is carrying an over-sized bag, possibly a rucksack, as he rides along.

At 4:30am on Saturday, 9 March, a woman in her 50s was on her way to work walking across Blackheath Common when she saw a man sitting on a bench. A bike was resting next to him.

As she got closer to him, he got up and

- needed emergency surgery three years ago to save his leg due to nerve damage caused by his diabetes.

He has also been treated at the hospital after he was bitten on the foot by a rat in South Africa. At the time, he couldn’t feel the bite due to damage in his blood vessels leaving him without feeling in his feet. He still needs regular treatment for the injury.

People with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of developing problems in their feet as high blood sugar levels can damage blood vessels, affecting blood flow.

Unhealed ulcers and foot infections are leading causes of diabetes-related amputations. According to charity Diabetes UK, around 80 per cent of

these amputations are preceded by foot ulcers.

Roz Rosenblatt, London head at Diabetes UK, said: “The multidisciplinary team at King’s College Hospital shows what good care looks like and the huge difference it makes.

“Access to the right care can mean the difference between saving or losing a foot or even a leg. But many areas still lack access to these specialist teams.

“This is shocking and we know the vast number of amputations are preventable.

“Better support, access to new selfmanagement technologies and education can ensure more people are able to manage their diabetes well

They said she was raped before the suspect left the location on a bike.

police were called to reports of an attempted rape in Margaret McMillan Park, in Glenville Grove, SE8.

Officers said the victim, aged in her 40s, was walking through the park when she was grabbed from behind by an unknown man.

Police say the man attempted to rape the victim, but she managed to push him off.

He is then said to have stolen some cash from her jacket pocket before making off towards Douglas Way. Police said a man in his late 20s was arrested on Saturday in connection with all three incidents and has been bailed pending further inquiries to a date in early July. A 24-year-old was arrested on Monday and currently remains in

custody pending ongoing inquiries.

DCI Craggs said: “Our team are ensuring the welfare of the victims in each of these offences, and we have a well-resourced operation dedicated to locating whoever is responsible for these attacks.

“Stranger attacks are incredibly rare and we would like to urge people to be alert, but not alarmed.

“The first and second offences are being linked and it is possible that the attack on Friday, 7 June may also be linked.

“If you think you have information about the person in the CCTV image, or about any of the offences which could assist us, please do not delay in coming forward.

A SECOND World War hero and ‘true Camberwell boy’ is the only Victoria Cross recipient to be named on a new memorial to those who died in the Normandy Campaign.

22,442 names on the new monument at Ver-sur-Mer in France honour those who lost their lives on D-Day and during the liberation of Europe at the site where British troops first landed in 1944.

The Normandy Memorial Trust, which has raised funding towards the monument, is marking the 75th anniversary of D-Day with a series of videos telling the stories of the men and women who helped win the war.

Corporal Bates’ great-nephew Chris Bates is one of the many family members keeping his memory – and valour – alive. He has narrated a video telling his great-uncle’s incredible story.

The 2018 Southwark Blue Plaque runner-up, nicknamed ‘Basher Bates’, died fending off the enemy as a Corporal in the 1st Battalion of the Royal Norfolk Regiment, sacrificing himself to save his platoon after an attack on two sides by the German 10th SS Panzer division on the Perrier Ridge.

After seeing his childhood friend killed, Bates picked up his fallen colleague’s Bren machine gun and charged.

In the video, Chris, who was one of several people to nominate Bates for a Southwark Blue Plaque last year in which he was a runner, says: “He was shot many times as he ran, and he fell to the ground three times, only to recover himself and continue his advance.

“A mortar bomb exploding near him finally brought him down.

“Eyewitnesses have told me he seemed to wrap himself around the gun and continue to fire and change ammo magazines whilst his strength lasted.”

After an enemy retreat, Bates was taken to hospital and died two days later.

He was just 23.

As Chris says: “I’ll never forget his incredible act of valour to save his mates.

We will remember them.”

This month’s D-Day anniversary has seen remembrance events held across the UK, including a full-size replica spitfire installed in London Bridge station and two surviving World War Two British paratroopers recreate their original landing.

Facebook group has thousands of followers

A COMMUNITY group dedicated to the SE16 area set up by a local mother has reached nearly 2,500 members in just months.

DULWICH HAMLET have announced their first ever women's team after merging with Clapham-based AFC Phoenix.

The all-women squad's first team plays in the London and South East regional Premier Division (5th tier).

Formed of players from ten different nationalities, the club was founded in Clapham Common in 2010.

Hamlet director, Tom Cullen, said it had 'never felt right' to him that DHFC didn't have women on the pitch.

"When we got back to Champion Hill we made it a priority to fix the imbalance and I’m absolutely delighted to have been able to find such a talented and dedicated team to wear the famous pink and blue," he said.

AFC Phoenix' captain, Brittany Saylor, said: “We are thrilled to become a part of the Dulwich family.

A LOCAL star of ITV’s hit reality TV series, Love Island, has been forced to leave the villa after reportedly breaking the show’s rules.

Sherif Lanre, 20, who played semiprofessional rugby for the Dulwichbased Old Alleynian rugby club, said in a statement he regretted not conducting himself in the right way.

judgement, I broke the villa rules and as a result agreed with the producers that it was best for me to leave the villa.

“I regret that I didn’t conduct myself in the right way and, as a 20 year old guy, it’s something I know I will take on board and learn from.

The ‘Social awareness group SE16’ on Facebook was found by Bermondsey mum, Charley Miller, at the end of February and has since grown fast.

Members of the group use it to post online appeals, ask questions and to raise awareness about topical issues affecting areas in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe.

The mother-of-two told the News: “I’ve been inundated with messages. I just thought it was a good platform to try and grow a local community, for everyone to be able to support each other.

“I’ve been organising a few things [through the group]. I did an Easter egg hunt and we got about 120 kids at the Stave Hill Park.

“It was lovely. We’re going to try and do other community events as well,” said Charley, who said a picnic event in the summer was also on the cards.

“It’s just a beneficial, positive community platform,” she added.

Through the group, events have been organised, cats have been reunited with their owners, lost property found and arrests made for local crimes, says the 34-year-old founder.

The group can be found on Facebook. Those joining should live in the SE16 area, be over-21, and must adhere to the group rules, which forbid bullying or hate speech.

Other similar groups dedicated to other areas in the borough, including the ‘Canada Water Safety Forum’ and ‘Peckham SE15’ have also attracted substantial local followings.

MURAL FALL-OUT HERNE HILL

THE COMMUNITY group behind a world record-breaking mural designed by thousands of residents in Herne Hill are hoping a fall-out with their artist won’t overshadow the new artwork’s unveiling.

Last September, 2,300 children and residents across south east London set a new Guinness World Record for creating the biggest colouring-in mural.

They were joined by actor Mark Rylance and local MP Helen Hayes as they more than doubled the number of participants achieved by the previous record-holders in Mexico.

The mural, which celebrates the best of Herne Hill’s people, landmarks and history, was installed in the underpass at Herne Hill station last week.

George Hornby, Herne Hill Forum’s chair, told the News: “The Wonderful Walk mural has brought people from across Herne Hill together.

“Over 2,300 school kids and locals rolled-up their sleeves to bring the mural to life and break the Guinness World Record for the most contributions to a colour by numbers mural.

“The mural, designed by Victor Szepessy, captures the spirit of Herne Hill and its community, past and present.”

He said it had already transformed the ‘dark and grotty underpass’ and made the space a ‘community focal point’.

But the installation, reproduced on durable vinyl to protect it from graffiti, rain and damp, while a safe permanent home is found for the original, hasn’t been welcomed by everyone after the artist claimed the replica was made without his permission, claiming he specifically refused to sign a consent form for its creation.

“The real mural is made of durable material and has anti-grafitti varnish,” he said on Twitter.

“It was commissioned and made for

the location and there is no technical reason for it not to be installed.”

He said the events had left him ‘absolutely heartbroken to see a PVC copy of my artwork’.

The News understands the forum’s members have been left perplexed by the claims, as they maintain a full license in perpetuity was agreed before the project began, giving them the rights to make reproductions.

They are now worried the dispute threatens to overshadow their achievement in bringing thousands of people together to create a positive tribute to their community.

THE CLASSMATES of a Millwall super-fan living with Cystic Fibrosis have written to prime minister Theresa May about his condition, after seeing his story in the News.

Finley Shoults, aged eight, would benefit from the drug Orkambi, which dramatically improves lung function for many people living with CF. The genetic condition causes thick mucus to build-up on the lungs, shortening life expectancy.

Although available in other countries, Orkambi is not available on the NHS in England amid an ongoing price row between NHS England and Vertex, its manufacturers.

Now Finley’s classmates at Barrington Primary School in Bexleyheath have written to Theresa May and Bexleyheath and Crayford MP, David Evennett, to ask why the wonder-drug isn’t available on the NHS. “Our friend has got Cystic Fibrosis and there is medicine that can help him but it is too expensive,” read one of Finley’s pals’ letters, while another added: “Everyone should have the best medicine, even if it costs a lot.”

Teacher Tracey Kerr, who leads a Year Three class, said the idea came from the children after they read an article in this paper about Finley’s dad, Wayne, running a marathon for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

“Through the discussion I asked them, ‘what can we do about this’, and they decided they wanted to write to the PM,” she explained.

“A few of them were quite nervous, but they were very keen to do it.

“It was a golden opportunity not only to help Finley and other people with Cystic Fibrosis but also to teach the children about their rights and how democracy works in a real-life situation.”

The school is a ‘rights respecting’ school, Mrs Kerr said, which means children are explicitly taught about the UN convention on the rights of the child.

Wayne, Finley’s doting dad, said: “I wasn’t expecting that to happen, for the whole class to write to the PM, it’s quite nice.”

During his marathon run, the Millwall season ticket holder raised nearly £6,600 for the CF Trust, a charity which lobbies for improvements for those suffering from the life-long condition – partly thanks to the help he has received from Millwall, Wayne said.

A spokesperson for the office said the letters would be sent to the department for health and social care which ultimately has responsibility for matters relating to CF. Meanwhile Mr Evennett also thanked the children for their letters and asked for further details so that he can raise the case of Finley and other CF sufferers with the authorities.

In a report presented to residents and shared with the News, TfL officials say that a relatively small drop in the number of vehicles using the tunnel has led to a dramatic improvement in air quality.

“The relatively small reduction in traffic levels has led to a substantial improvement in the air quality within the tunnel,” states the report.

“The average NO2 level has dropped from 558 µg/m3 to 332 µg/m3 or 40%.”

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, Neil Coyle, who secured the release of the figures told the News: “Thanks to local activists and The News highlighting the problem, the toxic air in the Rotherhithe Tunnel has been tackled and improved.

“This has meant having to reduce access to the tunnel for some vehicles, but previously TfL were not even properly monitoring the area or dangerous levels of pollution.

“I will keep reviewing the figures and hope local people have noticed the improvement in the last year.”

The tunnel, built in 1908, was not designed for modern levels of traffic and transport officials have warned that drivers breaking the restrictions are risking the safety of themselves and others.

EXT WEEK on Saturday 22nd June people from across the country will celebrate the second annual Windrush Day, an opportunity to remember the immense contribution that the Windrush generation and their descendants have made and continue to make to communities across the UK.

On 22nd June 1948 the Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks, bringing Commonwealth citizens from the Caribbean at the invitation of the British government, to help rebuild the UK in the aftermath of the Second World War. They included leading Southwark citizens like Sam King, who had served in the RAF, played a pivotal role in the creation of the Notting Hill Carnival and was the first black Mayor of Southwark in 1983.

N THE last two weeks the area around my house in Peckham has been twice drenched in chemical pesticides.

Over 2,000 youths on bikes protest against knife crime

I CAN’T believe that the Southwark News has given a front page headline to the cyclists who caused chaos all over London last Saturday.

This was nothing to do with putting knives down,it was an excuse for 2,000 out of control teenagers to bring chaos to London roads,cycling on the wrong side of the road on pavements, doing tricks,with no concern for any other road users or pedestrians.

The UK is losing soil fertility at a terrifying rate, with the government stating that many of our soils will be unable to produce any crops within 40 years.

Dual crossword With huge deficits, can under-pressure NHS Trusts really be expected to turn things around?

I

T’S NO coincidence that the areas where King’s College Hospital have taken a backwards step are those most under pressure from high demand and not enough funding.

King’s urgent care and accident and emergency is one of the busiest in London and – by extension – south east England, as anyone who goes through Denmark Hill on a Saturday night can testify.

A major trauma centre, King’s has some of the best doctors and surgeons in the country – if not the world – and boasts a leading pre-natal department that recently was one of the first globally to operate on an unborn baby with spina bifida.

Whereas maternity and end of life care are now ‘good’, urgent care requires improvement, as does surgery and outpatients.

Going through the evidence compiled by inspectors, it is clear that the trust has compassionate, well-qualified and trained staff but the consistency needed to hit the standards expected is lacking.

As one patient told inspectors from the Care Quality Commission: “King’s is a good hospital when you get in.

“My operation has been cancelled five times. I saw my consultant in March 2018 who said I needed an operation.”

They continued: “My operation had been cancelled in June, August, November, and twice in December. I am finally here today and I hope it goes ahead.”

Many of us will have similar stories and be reluctant to place the blame on NHS dedicated staff and professionals.

The question is – when the trust’s deficit is £193 million and counting for the current financial year can it really turn things around?

Or will we have to accept that ‘requires improvement’ is the new normal?

Could Esther McVey help create an independent Southwark?

A MORE unusual twist in the race for the next prime minister currently ongoing is the news of a long-standing grudge between Esther McVey and TV’s Lorraine Kelly.

The pair have bad blood supposedly because McVey claimed to have been promoted over Kelly, when they shared a dressing room on GMTV. But now Labour’s Southwark council leader Peter John has waded in as well – and it could have dramatic consequences for the borough.

“Seriously, if Esther McVey wins, Southwark is declaring independence!” he says.

But independence may come even if she doesn’t win, councillors joke. “It’s tempting to declare independence if most of the others win too,” adds a Liberal Democrat opposition councillor.

CCTV released after three sexual assaults CCTV IMAGES of a man officers wish to identify have been shared by British Transport Police, as they investigate three sexual assaults at Waterloo Station.

Last month, three teenage girls were inappropriately touched from behind by a man who approached them as they walked toward the mainline station concourse.

All three were assaulted within quick succession - within ten to fifteen seconds shortly after 9pm on Saturday, May 4.

Officers say the man pictured may have information that could help their investigation.

Anyone who knows this man or has any information about the assaults should contact British Transport Police by texting 61016, calling 0800 40 50 40, or calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Businesses on the Rye are full of praise for SGN gas

NEARLY FORTY per cent of patients treated for dog bite injuries to the face at King's College Hospital last year were children.

New figures published by the Royal College of Surgeons of England last Thursday, June 6, show NHS hospitals have seen a rise of almost five per cent in the number of people admitted with dog-related injuries in the last three years.

In total, more than 23,000 people were treated for dog bites and other injuries between 2015 and 2018 - on average, around 8,000 a year.

Nationally, round 21 per cent of those treated were children, but surgeons at King's College Hospital say the proportion of children they have treated for facial injuries caused by dog attacks coming through their doors is higher - at 38 per cent.

Kathy Fan, a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon at King's College Hospital in Denmark Hill said: “Dog bites can be devastating, and bites to the face can leave the individual with scars both visual and psychological."

Previous research carried out by oral and facial surgeons at Royal London Hospital showed children are more likely to be bitten in the face by dogs than elsewhere, and that these injuries are more extreme than elsewhere in the body. One in five had to have surgery under general anaesthetic.

"Children are more susceptible to facial dog bites because of their size and behaviour with pets,” Ms Fan, a member of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons,

Although the work was expected to last thirteen months, from January 2019 to 2020, the road has now been successfully reinstated and reopened to traffic and cyclists.

SGN general manager, Drew Reynolds, thanked businesses and traders for their understanding, saying: ““We appreciate the patience and understanding expressed by residents, traders and road users while we’ve carried out this essential work.”

The Peckham Business Network, a group of traders around Rye Lane, had previously told the News of their fears closing the road to motorists would negatively impact on footfall.

But the group had nothing but praise for the team for completing the work early, saying: “Thank you so much SGN finishing laying a new gas main 6.5 months sooner than planned in Rye Lane.

“All your workers and staff at all levels have been so professional, efficient, helpful and cheerful all of the time that SGN deserve five gold stars.”

New recipe book for families with young children

A NEW recipe book, ‘Together we cook’, has been launched by Evelina London’s community children’s nutrition and dietetics team to support healthy eating on a budget.

The recipes, provided by young families from Lambeth and Southwark, have been nutritionally analysed and adapted so that they fit with current healthy eating guidance.

Figures from Public Health England this year show that 11.4% and 10.5% of children of reception age are classified as obese in Southwark and Lambeth, respectively. This compares with an England average of 9.5%. According to Public Health England, 23.4% of children aged under 16 years in Lambeth and 23.2% in Southwark were living in poverty in 2016.

funded through donations, will be given to every family who completes a ‘Cook and eat well’ course run by Evelina London’s early years community food workers in children's centres across both boroughs. Families who attend the course develop practical cooking skills and learn more about cooking healthy meals on a budget.

Serena Cunningham, an administrator, attended classes with her daughter Naila, three, and previously with her son, NoahIsaac, who is now eight, at Liz Atkinson children’s centre. She said: “It's good for children to learn how to cook from a young age and to learn more about food from other cultures, by using other alternatives to meat and sugar.

“This new book is perfect and means I have all the recipes together rather than on lots of individual sheets. I will definitely be using this to get the children

involved at home. Naila loves being in the kitchen with me and she’s willing to help by preparing vegetables, mixing and also grating too.”

Maryam Bader, an early years’ community food worker at Evelina London who wrote the recipe book with colleagues Ana Da Silva and Harriet Preston, said: “This recipe book is a great source of information for all families and can help them to provide good nutritional meals for their children on a budget.”

Outpost sees out Shortwave

OUTPOST 2 is the Bermondsey Artists’ Group's follow up exhibition from last year's Outpost. Spanning photography, painting, printmaking, sculpture, drawing and film, Outpost 2 brings together over 20 artists from BAG, and will also be the final exhibition at Shortwave Café after its short but exciting existence, writes Michael Holland...

As is usual with BAG exhibitions there is a rich assortment of work and styles, which ensures their shows have something for everyone. Outpost 2 has two eyecatching pieces from Martin Pover where he has created excitement via nothing much happening at all.

I became mesmerised while simply staring and waiting for something to happen in these photographic constructs that strangely seem to be bursting with life.

Continuing the photographic line, Miyako Narita’s shot of humdrum objects and condiments on a kitchen table is made magnificent by a parrot perched on what could be a salt cellar. I found myself interacting with the artwork by checking ‘use by’ dates.

Tony Fleming’s piece looks like he has followed on from earlier works that used semaphore flags to form the art but now he has done it with small wood and wire tools spelling something out. Probably a swear word. Perhaps not. Is it even

There is a twee Victorian sampler on lace, but closer inspection reveals it to be a very contemporary artwork and problem. There are several pencil sketches, prints, and a rather

creepy piece titled Inheritance that depicts a rag-doll family nailed, Jesus-like, to wood. The message hits you after a while. Plus, of course, there is a selection of splendid work in oil and acrylic to make Outpost 2 one of the best

exhibitions to see in June.

Watching the Zoogoers (all played

by Jessica Kinsey), impatiently attempt to get the Ape’s attention and make it speak code, we are compelled to question the absurdity of the study and appreciate the different ways language exists, including, when the

Ape turns over the leaf, ‘silent communication’.

Precious Little also highlights how as humans we are as much researched as researchers, shown when newly pregnant Brodie finds herself immediately pigeonholed into ‘older mother’, faced with having an

amniocentesis test. After all, she tells us, ‘I pictured myself giving birth to a postgrad’; again encouraging us to consider why we draw lines in the sand about what we legitimise.

Despite scientific study, life has its own plan. This play ensures that audience exposure to actors changing roles in front of them and set pieces on stage, together remind us that life is organic, and language is part of that natural process: recording Cleva’s Slavic language, one that expresses the natural environment beautifully, seems justifiable. When comparing it starkly with the quick-fire phrases of the Zoogoers forever impatient for animal entertainment, we ponder that we have lost ourselves.

Precious Little is cleverly thought provoking. One to see.

With help and support from the Québec Government Office, the troupe has performed all over the world. This current run of Transit is in London for a stint before transferring up to Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival. The show itself has all the makings of a great night’s circus entertainment, the ability to weave circus skills into a narrative that shows off the performers abilities and comic play. It is packed with circus craft, from ring work, juggling, acrobatics, air straps and even trampowall. Many of the feats of strength and control absolutely amaze, however, it is the diabolo work from Jérémie Arsenault that really blew me away. It was a flawless and captivating display of diabolo skill.

The performance was not without errors, though. A few dropped batons and tied up skipping ropes took the shine off of the show. Some errors you can put down to opening night pressure and lack of time working in the space, but at times you could see the energy levels and focus drop. Nevertheless, I know that with more performances you will see this show only getting better as it becomes slicker. With humour throughout and a snappy running time of 1 hour it makes excellent entertainment for all the family.

Language, being intrinsic to our ability to communicate, is put under the spotlight in its many forms. Brodie played by Jenny Delisle, confidently takes charge of situations with her scientific and academic rhetoric and works hard in her research to ensure that the old Slavic spoken by Cleva(Deborah Maclaren), is prevented from dying out.

While that sounds pragmatic, the play pushes us to look deeper by confronting us with the character of the Ape, also Deborah Maclaren, alone in a zoo enclosure. Despite scientific experiments to make this animal - that fascinates humans, being both similar and dissimilar - speak through code, we find it exists quite happily in its own right. Maclaren does not don an ape suit for the part so her human appearance prevents us diminishing the Ape, forcing us to see what connects us and question what

new BBC Four documentary tells the story of the biggest scandal in Victorian publishing – when a social reformer who lived in Dulwich was taken to court after printing a sex and contraception guide for ordinary people.

In A Victorian Scandal: The Rudest Book In Britain, broadcast last week, Dr Fern Riddell argues instead of reinforcing the Victorian’s image for buttoned-up, sexual regressive prudishness, the infamous 1877 obscenity trial shows a different side to the Victorian public who were clamour-ing for information about sex.

Although the ruling classes were worried so-called ‘obscene’ publications would corrupt the masses, normal people were increasingly benefiting from new ideas disseminated by a rapidly industrialised printing press.

But despite advances in physiological understanding of the human body, many people still

lacked access to basic information about the mechanics of sex and contraception.

Annie Besant was a social reformer, most remembered for her role in the London matchgirls strike of 1888.

A supporter of Irish and Indian selfrule, she was born in Clapham on October 1, 1847, and lived in Dulwich’s 39 Colby Road, near Gispy Hill, in the 1970s.

She believed access to contraception would help control a rapidly expanding population, and help families move out of poverty and live better lives.

In 1876, she teamed up with Charles Bradlaugh, with whom she had co-founded the National Secular Society, to enable ordinary people further their understanding of birth control.

Fruits of Philosophy written by Charles Knowlton, explained the anatomy of men and women and the role of frequent orgasms in physical and mental health.

Although its information wasn’t always particularly accurate, some of its advice has indeed stood the test of time.

On conception and pregnancy, the book’s author explains: “The part performed by the male in the reproduction of the species consists in exciting the organism of the female, and depositing semen in the vagina.”

The author also advises that the ‘reproductive urge’ doesn’t cease when pregnancy begins but can, in fact, increase.

Knowlton also explains how sex is useful for quelling otherwise disruptive desires: “If this pas-sion, being once roused, could not by some means or other be calmed, it would command by far too great a portion of our thoughts, and with many constitutions the individuals, whether male or female, could not conduct themselves with due decorum.”

But at this time, what could and couldn’t be published was governed according to obscenity laws which didn’t just target pornography.

Anything deemed explicit - even medical writings - could potentially be viewed as obscene.

Fruits of Philosophy had been sold on a small scale in England in the 1870s and caused a stir– one

bookseller was even given two years’ hard labour as a result.

But when Bradlaugh and Besant took over as publishers, they sold the cheapest ever edition – costing a sixpence – making it widely available for the first time to the average working man or woman.

After 500 copies flew off the shelves on the first day alone, the pair were arrested and charged for breaching the 1857 Obscene Publications Act. A trial, at the Old Bailey, started in June 1877.

Prosecutors believed Fruits of Philosophy was problematic on two levels. Not only did the prose-cutors think it was indecent, many people still believed contraception in marriage was sinful.

This was a view even taken by scientific pioneers like Darwin, who had done much to challenge traditional religious thinking, who believed contraception got in the way of natural selection, and the survival of the fittest.

Taking to the stand, Besant and Bradlaugh defended themselves with Besant arguing sex can help men and women stay healthy, and birth control can help tackle poverty.

In court, it was branded ‘a dirty and filthy book’ and, the prosecution explained, no decent hus-band would allow his wife to read it.

But as Dr Riddell’s research shows, although that was the official story, and a view many news-papers backed, the public voted with their wallets.

During the highly publicised trial, Fruits of Philosophy became an overnight bestseller.

The pair were found guilty but eventually managed to overturn the judgement on a technicality.

Besant continued campaigning for birth control, even writing her own pamphlet on the subject, The Law of Population.

It took until 1930 for the Church of England to publicly support the use of birth control within marriage, and until 1974 for the NHS to fully provide contraception ‘irrespective of age or mar-ital status’.

In a time when access to abortion and reproductive rights are still debated, and in some coun-tries being rolled back, as Dr Riddell says, Besant helped start a debate – 140 years ago - that is yet to be concluded.

Hamlet and Palace team up for mental health

Hamlet fans are helping raise awareness around mental health

DULWICH HAMLET FC fans will walk from Selhurst Park to Champion Hill to raise awareness for mental health and male suicide in support of the CALM charity (Campaign Against Living Miserably).

The walk will take place before Dulwich’s friendlly against Crystal Palace at Champion Hill on July 27, and will possibly involve ex-Hamlet and Palace player, Andy Gray, and manager, Alan Smith.

The event will be organised by Dulwich Hamlet’s community work arm, led by Rob Hyneman, who is also deputy head of Cobourg Primary School.

“Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK, which is staggering,” Rob said. “It proves that there’s a stigma attached to suicide, especially among men. People just don’t want to talk about it.”

He added: “We as a club do lots of initiatives within the local community, but we haven’t done anything to address mental health issues so far. This is a first step on that road.”

Rob also underlined the role of the fans in directing the club’s initiatives. “The beauty of this is that it came from a supporter of both Dulwich and Crystal Palace. That’s the key element of the club’s community side. It’s not about what I want, or what the club wants. It’s the initiatives that the fan base wants to support.”

But why does Dulwich Hamlet feel that it is the club’s duty to involve itself in non-football matters such as mental health?

Rob explained: “Dulwich is more than just a football club. The club is an integral part of the local community and we have a duty to make sure that we are reaching out beyond Champion Hill and making sure that we are including the local supporters in everything that we do.

“I think it comes back to the ethos of the club. Of course a football club doesn’t have to do it. A football club can just be 3-5pm on a Saturday. But that’s not the ethos of Dulwich hamlet. We believe that we must do much more.”

Rob also pointed out that the club cannot rest on its reputation for community action. Sitting still is merely stagnation. “I’m a great believer that we’ve been streets ahead of other clubs in terms of our community work.

“But I’m also aware that lots of clubs are catching up now or doing some of the things that we do. So, we have to go out there and find things that are new and exciting and will engage our fans.”

But does attaching a mental health label to the event really mean that it has a positive effect? Rob was realistic about the impact that the walk can have, but insisted that even a non-league club like Dulwich can make a difference.

“It’s encouraged that you talk to people

that you wouldn’t normally come across [during the walk]. Even if you’re walking with friends and family then the aim is to talk to additional people.”

“Sometimes, for people that are feeling low in their life, just having someone there to speak to, be it a close friend or a complete stranger, can be extremely comforting and helpful.

“Of course, this walk isn’t going to solve all of the mental health issues in south London, but it’s a starting point and it gets the conversation going.

“As with all these initiatives, you never know [what difference it will make] until you do it. The walk may not necessarily bring someone back from the brink. It might just be a lovely afternoon where fans and their families from both clubs come together and enjoy the finer parts of south London.

“It’s a very simple way of showing the unity of the two clubs behind this cause.”

Rob also emphasised Dulwich’s role in

inspiring other clubs to take up the initiative. In this way the club can make a contribution to the mental health cause far greater than the sum of its parts.

Dulwich themselves have taken inspiration from Crystal Palace for this particular initiative. Palace fans completed a similar walk from their stadium to the Emirates before a match against Arsenal last season.

The walk starts at Selhurst Park at 11am and covers just over five miles, a realistic goal for even the less athletic fans who wish to attend. Mercifully, there will also be a half-hour pit stop at The Paxton pub from 12:20-12:50pm. The revelry will descend upon Champion Hill Stadium at roughly 2pm. Those eager to participate should keep an eye on the Dulwich Hamlet Community Twitter feed (see Twitter handle below), where further details will be posted this Friday.

FISHER HAVE appointed Allan Fenn as their new manager.

The former Ilford, Redbridge and Haringey Borough boss replaces Dean Harrison, who guided the Rotherhithe club to third in the SCEFL Premier Division last season.

“I am so proud and delighted to be named the first team manager of such a fantastic club,” Fenn said.

“It’s my intention to work with the existing players and staff, board and our superb supporters and build on the good foundations already laid.

“I want to involve the local community and really get this club moving forward towards our goals and ambitions, which is to win silverware and promotion.

“It won’t be easy because there are

some very good teams in the league but I’m confident that the players and staff can rise to the challenges I set them.

“The lads showed last season what they are capable of and with a few additions we intend to build a team capable of challenging on all fronts.

“I cannot wait to get going. To new beginnings.”

Jon Lodwick also bowled a fine opening spell in which he took two wickets to reduce Sanderstead to 24-3 in the ninth over.

Skipper George Jackson then joined opener Shareef Hassan to add 43 for the fourth wicket in the highest stand of the innings. By now left-arm spinners Elliot Miles and Ben Swanson had taken over the attack. They each took a wicket, with Swanson dismissing Jackson for 19, off 38 balls, and Miles having Hassan lbw for 24, off an obdurate 67 balls.

The score had advanced to 90 off 30 overs when Salaar Waqar joined the attack, and the runs dried up so completely against him and Miles that only 12 runs were scored off the next 10

overs for three more wickets.

A late flurry by Simon Carter and Gregg McLean lifted the score to 128 before Lodwick returned to bowl Carter for 23, and the last man was run out six runs later to dismiss Sanderstead for 134 off the last ball of the 52nd over.

Once again, the wickets had been shared around, with Lodwick taking 324 off ten overs, and Miles and Swanson each bowling 14 miserly overs for 2-32 and 1-34 respectively. Waqar claimed 211 off six, while Munawar got 1-11 plus the run out.

Dulwich were left with 48 overs to get the runs. Jackson opened the attack in company with Nicky Wilson in a hostile display of quick bowling that saw three

Southwark swimmer selected for Nationals

LOCAL GIRL Teddy Kinsler, 15, has won coveted places at both the British and English Summer Championships next month.

Teddy, who swims with Southwark Aquatics, has qualified for the 50m breaststroke at the British Championships – a considerable achievement, with only the top 24 swimmers in each age group and discipline invited to race.

Teddy has also been invited to the English Summer Championships to compete in the 200m breaststroke as one of the next 20 English swimmers in her age group. This is a real Southwark success story as Teddy learned to swim locally at the Seven Islands pool, progressing all the way from her earliest Learn To Swim lessons to training there several times a week with Southwark Aquatics.

The next step for the club is to try to raise £750 to send a coach to support Teddy on the national stage, since the races take place in Glasgow and Sheffield and the team coach is required to attend briefings on the eve of both competitions, as well as the race days.

ANOTHER FINE all-round performance saw Dulwich record their second successive victory in Division 2 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship, winning by four wickets at home to Sanderstead last weekend.

Dulwich invited their visitors to bat, and had an early breakthrough when Kamran Munawar took a sharp return catch in the second over of the innings.

The Sanderstead keeper took two catches and a stumping, but also conceded 16 byes.

This victory lifts Dulwich two places to fifth in the table, level on points with Stoke D’Abernon. Coincidentally Dulwich visit them this weekend for the first ever Surrey Championship fixture between the two sides.

BEN THOMPSON is looking forward to more “exciting events” after signing a new three-year deal with Millwall – and identified his spell at Portsmouth as key to his development.

Millwall don’t announce the length of contracts, but it’s believed to be a threeyear deal with an option of a further twelve months.

NEIL HARRIS has paid tribute to Justin Edinburgh, the 49-yearold manager of Leyton Orient who died last weekend.

Former Tottenham defender Edinburgh, who was in charge of Fisher Athletic in his early management career, passed away five days after suffering cardiac failure.

AFTER THE breakaway of London City Lionesses from Millwall FC after the conclusion of the 2018-19 Women’s Championship campaign, a reborn Millwall Lionesses will return home to south London after a season at Dartford FC’s Princes Park.

Coming back to their home of St Paul’s Stadium in Rotherhithe, where previous Lionesses’ teams have experienced unrivalled success, the new-look Millwall side will be managed by FA ALicenced coach Colin Reid. He will be assisted by last season’s Lionesses Development coach, Nick Farrell.

Both come with pedigree, as Reid has a wealth of experience working with players in the men’s professional game at the highest level, and Farrell is also a well-respected and experienced coach who can boast the Dartford Academy Development Phase side as another team he has helped to develop and evolve.

Due to the LCL taking the current Women’s Championship place for the upcoming 2019-20 season, the Millwall Lionesses have to start their new life further down the pyramid.

However, with a management staff with the quality of both Reid and Farrell, the side are expecting to return to past glories and re-establish themselves as the place to be for young female players to grow and further their careers in the women’s game.

Trials will take place at St Paul’s on Tuesday, June 18 (68:30pm); Thursday, June 20 (68:30pm) and Sunday, June 23 (4-6pm).

TOM KING admitted he understood Neil Harris’ decision to release him this summer – and he insisted he had no regrets about his time at Millwall.

Harris was the first manager King played for after he joined the Lions having left Crystal Palace in 2014.

Harris was the under-21 boss before he took the first-team reins and handed King his senior professional debut in a 2-1 League Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest in August 2016.

King had several loan spells, the last at AFC Wimbledon last season, where by his own admission it didn’t go to plan and he was recalled in January.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper is out of contract at the end of this month, and he was told by Harris in May he was being released.

King admitted the news wasn’t a great surprise.

“Football is a strange game in the sense that you’re getting told different things and I kind of had a feeling the goalkeeping department at Millwall would have quite a shake-up in the summer,” King told the News this week. “Whether it included me or not I wasn’t really sure at the time.

“Nobody was particularly pleased with the way it ended up at Wimbledon, the game time was cut short which was not what anyone wanted.

“I understood. I had a good chat with [Harris]. He explained to me his thoughts. He explained that he couldn’t see me playing in his first team in the next season or so. For lack of a better way to put it it was almost like wasting time by offering me a new contract.

“I completely understood. I’m quite a mature boy for my age and I try to understand people’s views and opinions quite respectfully and in quite a calm manner. I knew that if I was going to be honest with myself then not playing a major part in a League One team meant I was never going to find myself as the No. 1 in a Championship team.

“There are obviously always ifs and buts and things that we could have done differently, but I don’t regret my time at Millwall. No chance.”

King made all of his eleven senior league appearances in 2016-17. An injury to Jordan Archer had given him his chance, and though he performed impressively Harris recalled Archer late that season.

King was on the bench when the Lions played Bradford in the League One play-off final as a crucial save from Archer kept the game goalless before Steve Morison scored a late winner.

He accepted Harris’ decision at the time to put Archer back into the side.

“From a professional footballer’s standpoint, you always want to feel you can play a part in the team,” King continued. “There were so many question marks around my name at the time, I’d only played bits of Conference football.

“At that point I was just very happy to be considered to be in the team when Jordan had his injury. I grew into the role. I was excited to be in the team, the adrenalin was there for me.

“Then being taken out when Jordan was fit again was kind of my first real

“ONE HELL of a move” is how Tom King described David Martin’s switch to West Ham – and he understood his former team-mate’s decision to join Millwall’s bitter rivals.

“I’m quite lucky, I’m moving to Newport but I don’t have any family, or wife or girlfriend. I’m free to come and go as I please. I haven’t got to uproot anybody’s’ lives,” King said.

“I had a couple of options in League One to go and challenge No. 1 goalies. And there were a couple of options in League Two to go and be the No. 1 and go and play some football. I thought that going and playing was vital, I’m at such an important stage in my career now where I have to prioritise games over everything.

“That automatically ruled out the League One options for me. After speaking with [Flynn], and knowing some of the players, I got some of their opinions and I thought it would be a really good fit for me.

“The manager wants a personality like me and I’m a similar build and size to the [goalkeeper] that looks like he’s going to be departing.

Hopefully I can fit straight in.”

Lions could break transfer record this summer

MILLWALL WILL have to break their transfer record to land winger Jamal Lowe from Portsmouth.

The Lions have tabled a £1.5million offer for 24-year-old Lowe, which has been rejected by the League One side.

Wigan have also had the same bid knocked back as Portsmouth hold out for a fee of £3million for their attacker. That would be around double the amount Millwall paid for midfielder Ryan Leonard last summer.

Lowe scored seventeen goals in 2018-19 and is not afraid to get stuck in, picking up ten yellow cards during the campaign.

Harrow-born Lowe only joined Portsmouth in the summer of 2017 from Hampton & Richmond Borough of National League South. He played mainly on the right wing last season, and scored in the 114th minute of the EFL Trophy final in the 2-2 draw with Sunderland in front of an 85,021 attendance at Wembley.

Lowe then scored the fourth goal in the penalty shootout as Jackett’s side won 5-4.

He is eager to get involved in attacks off the wing, which is something Harris encourages in his wide players.

It wouldn’t be the first time Harris has done business with Jackett, who loaned Millwall George Saville and Jed Wallace from Wolves in 2015-16, with both going on to eventually sign permanently at The Den. Meanwhile, reports in the Liverpool press are linking Millwall with a move for Herbie Kane.

The 20-year-old Reds midfielder spent last season on loan at League One Doncaster, where he was a team-mate of former Lions striker John Marquis.

Kane scored seven goals in 49 appearances as the side reached the play-off semi-finals where they lost to Charlton on penalties.

Brentford are also being linked with the youngster.
