VIRGIN MEDIA customers across Herne Hill and Dulwich blasted the company after it tried to claim there were no faults in their area and attempted to ‘fob off’ the MP intervening on their behalf despite being left for weeks without broadband.

Virgin Media customers living in postcodes SE24, SE22 and SE21 have had no internet access for two weeks, the latest breakdown in what they say has been a deteriorating service in the last few years.

Hayes tweeted Virgin Media on May 31, saying residents had been ‘suffering unacceptable outages and intermittent service over several weeks and again today.

“When will the problems be sorted and reliable service restored?”

A representative for Virgin Media replied saying they couldn’t find any issues listed in the area, as her constituents piled onto the conversation sharing details of the ‘shoddy’ service’ and difficulty getting compensation.

David Winterburn, who replied to Hayes’ tweet, thanked her for intervening and said: “Just been on the phone to @virginmedia today who initially tried to claim it was just an issue today.

“I insisted it has been going on for ages. They now accept it has been going on for two weeks and claim compensation will be applied automatically.”

He later said: “I’ve been logging the fault online for weeks. Service keeps dropping out. Repeatedly happening. Doesn’t seem to get fixed or be reflected in our bills.”

Rachel Griffiths also thanked Hayes for stepping in, saying her two children were struggling to revise for their A Levels and GCSEs while the internet was down, while another resident, Aurora Fearnley, said: “Thank you Helen for making their continued signal outage public.

“Virgin on SE22 has been deteriorating year after year, with little sign of a solution and no compensation.”

But with no details about the cause of the problems or when they would be fixed, forthcoming, Hayes described Virgin Media’s efforts

D-DAY LANDINGS: SPITFIRE LOANED TO LONDON BRIDGE TO MARK 75TH ANNIVERSARY

A FULL-SIZE replica of a World War Two spitfire is on display at London Bridge train station from today until June 9, marking the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

The Supermarine Spitfire is on special loan from the Imperial War Museum Duxford, Cambridgeshire.

It has been installed in the station's new concourse, a stone's throw from HMS Belfast which played a key role in D-Day. D-Day, June 6, 1944, marked the beginning of operation overlord, when

allied forces started their sea, air and land campaign in northern France.

The spitfire is also a reminder of The Southern Railway, as it was then known, and its own war effort back home. The railway evacuated civilians from London, brought troops back from Dunkirk, and transported military supplies.

The 75th anniversary of the landings is being marked across London with events at the Imperial War Museum in Kennington, HMS Belfast and Churchill War Rooms.

At London Bridge and Waterloo, a free newspaper about the landings will be handed out, with a digital exhibition also

on show at both station.

Ian Hanson, stations director for Network Rail's south east route, said: "We're so excited to have a full-scale replica Spitfire on display in London Bridge's huge concourse on the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

"The Railway played a vital role during the Second World War, including transporting troops and equipment to the front lines ready for the D-Day operations.

"It's fantastic to be able to help Imperial War Museums mark this important anniversary by hosting this Spitfire and a great surprise which we're sure will thrill

our passengers too."

John Delaney, the head of Second World War from Imperial War Museums, said: "It is such a thrill to display our replica Spitfire in the public space of London Bridge.

"This is an unprecedented and unique way to mark 75 years since D-Day and

THIRTEEN THOUSAND pounds of taxpayers’ money has been spent investigating complaints by DHFC landlord and developer Meadow, after Southwark Council leader Peter John ranted on Twitter: “Is this the most stupid development company in history or simply the nastiest?”

The council’s standards committee was forced to hold a costly internal investigation into a series of tweets from Cllr John’s account in April 2018 that Meadow claimed were ‘inaccurate and misleading’, and in breach of the council’s code of conduct by failing to treat people and organisations with due respect.

At a formal hearing on Thursday, May 9, the committee’s members threw the allegations out, stating: “Councillor John is representing the voice of his constituents, which is the duty of a councillor.

“While the choice of words could have been better, they did not cross the line of breaching the code of conduct.

“Members of the committee also believe it was relevant that the tweet was phrased as a question.”

Dulwich Hamlet returned to Champion Hill in time for Christmas after eight months in exile; when Meadow kicked it out of its home ground over allegations of debts.

The 125-year-old club’s future was secured when MPs Helen Hayes and

Harriet Harman and then-sports minister Tracey Crouch intervened in the wrangling between the club, its landlord and the council.

The hard-won deal involved Meadow writing off the disputed debts and the council agreeing not to compulsorily purchase the site as long as the terms of the club’s new lease were fair.

But although things between DHFC and Meadow are looking up, there appears to be no love lost between the company and Peter John.

Their feud was reignited this week when, on Monday, Cllr John tweeted exactly how much cash had been spent investigating the complaints levelled against him. “£13,136.65p - that's the cost to Southwark Council of dealing with unfounded complaints made against me by developers Meadow Partners,” he wrote.

“They may think it's money well spent - but at a time when we've lost 63 per cent of government grant I doubt Southwark Council tax payers would agree.”

Speaking to the News, Cllr John said it was a “shocking waste of public funds to satisfy the thin skin of an American developer”.

A Meadow spokesperson attempted to take the high ground, telling the paper: “We do not see the need to comment on yet another inaccurate and misleading tweet from Cllr John.

The man behind Maltby Street’s renaissance

A

DRIAN AMOS has always had an enthusiasm for old things. The owner of London Architectural Salvage and Supply Co (LASSCO), which deals in antiques and reclaimed flooring, comes from a family of cabinet makers from Bow in East London, who established themselves in the antique trade, writes Laura Burgoine...

“I’ve always had a predisposition to saving things,” Adrian said. “Like a lot of young lads, I daresay I was fascinated by my father’s habit of keeping old nails and straightening them out. It’s all about the frugal times of the early 20th century.”

The family set up shop in an old wagon works in Hampstead before taking over a group of ecclesiastical buildings in Shoreditch.

“We moved to Shoreditch when it was absolutely on its knees,” Adrian said.

“It was beyond rough; it was derelict.

We moved there because we had the opportunity to buy, very cheaply, a very large Victorian church with a roof that needed repairs and the ecclesiastical authorities were keen to offload these

responsibilities.

“We developed a habit of moving from one historic building to another and this was in the days when historic buildings were considered to be a bit of a nuisance,” he continued. “Nowadays to describe a building as a listed building is to give it a premium, but back in the early ‘70s if something was listed that was an impediment.”

In Shoreditch, Adrian started “this whole thing of architectural salvage.”

“I was taking things out of skips at one end of the street and selling it to householders at the other end of the street,” he said. “In that difference between the two there was a living to be made.

“Antiques comes to us now,” Adrian said. “And we buy from auction. In the glory days of our business there were teams of runners, chaps that would go round and buy from demolition sites.”

The business has always struggled to find enough space and after LASSCO’s home in an old ammunitions factory in Islington was demolished, Adrian was on the hunt for a new premises.

“I was in the habit of driving my very

ancient mother around on a Sunday and we always used to favour the more obscure parts of town, the odd spots,” he said.

“We just happened to find ourselves in the backstreets of Bermondsey and there was a For Sale sign. I looked at it and thought perhaps I should take a chance and go south of the river.”

They bought the site and struck some good luck when planning rules changed. Forge architects helped the company get planning permission to develop the site, which they sold on for the development of what is now Bermondsey Central.

“The yard was next to railway arches and we rented the railway arches as well and now we’re just left with the railway arches,” Adrian said.

The business’ early days in the railway arches coincided with the birth of Maltby Street market. “I’ve always been interested in markets and the mash-up of commerce. Everything from antiques and salvage through to food and drink,” Adrian said. “I don’t take credit for the foundation of the market. That has its roots in Anita [Leroy]; she used to open her coffee

shop [Monmouth] on Saturday morning and people would flock down to enjoy the coffee.”

Controversy arose, however. “Anita was always very keen that we weren’t referring to ourselves here as a market, because there’s an ancient law that no market could be established within a certain radius of Borough Market,” Adrian said. “And the trustees at that time were very jealous of this regulation. They gave the traders an ultimatum that they couldn’t trade as a market on Maltby Street and keep their stalls at Borough. So they threw a number of them out. This resulted in a terrible furore in the Evening

Standard.”

The trustees retreated but “Borough Market’s character was changing at the time,” Adrian said. “There was an awareness that railway arches could be used for something other than motor repair.”

And so, “the non-market sort of became a market,” Adrian said. People set up stalls in front of the arches that LASSCO used for timber. “It dawned on us that this was rather an attractive use. We felt it brought life to the place.”

Maltby Street now attracts tourists from all over the world as a result of Trip Advisor recommendations.

“Generally speaking these conflicts work their way out. There is a change in the demographic and it’s got to be managed sympathetically.”

Adrian believes Bermondsey’s identity is inextricably linked to the bricks it’s built from. “We’re not that gritty,” he said. “I like to think it’s the brickwork. Bricks are very much an indicator that you’re in a town, in a city. We’ve got these wonderful railway arches, which are listed buildings, which is odd. It’s a very long listed building: 3.5 miles long from London Bridge to Greenwich: 864 arches. And it’s the oldest elevated railway in the world.”

When the railway was built, with lime mortar, there was a nationwide shortage of bricks. “Lime is a soft material that never really sets. That’s why they’ve survived this long,” Adrian said. “I think they do have a limited life, the arches. The lines above have an integral drain in them which over the years has broken, so when it rains the arches get saturated

and water washes out the lime.

They’re taking weights 100 times what they were designed to take. It’s only a matter of time before these arches just become a pile of bricks and sand. It could be said that Maltby Street is the story of the railway arches,” Adrian said. “There is so much history on this site.”

People often ask the antique dealer where LASSCO sources its wares.

“They say ‘surely there’s nothing left?’ but it just keeps coming up,” Adrian said. “We had a situation just recently where a very, very wealthy chap had completely remodelled a splendid building and he had 18 bathrooms. He died, it was all stripped out, and whilst we were stripping it out we found that only three of those bathrooms had ever been used.”

“It’s sad but on the other hand it’s that sort of wasted surplus that other people pick up. I’m a great believer that nothing ever goes to waste. It just goes round and round.”

HIT THE LOW LINE & LISTEN TO TOP TRACKS

MUSICIANS HAVE created tracks for fifteen sites along the Victorian railway viaduct from Bankside to Bermondsey as part of the London Festival of Architecture.

However, the tracks can only be heard by visiting each of the historic locations in person – therefore encouraging people to visit the neighbourhoods that inspired the music.

The locations are all on the Low Line, the Victorian railway viaducts and archways spanning Bankside, Bermondsey and London Bridge.

Among them are well-known locations such as the Shard and Borough Market, as well as Ewer Street, close to the Tate Modern, and Bermondsey’s Blue Market.

A free public event is to be held on Tuesday, June 4 at the Underdog Gallery in London Bridge from 5pm featuring live music and talks also forms part of the project.

The ‘Musicity’ idea is the brainchild of BBC Radio 3 presenter, Nick Luscombe.

Local artist part of the recreated 1919 peace conference

A LOCAL artist was among the women recreating a famous 1919 Zurich peace conference, attended by Bermondsey’s Ada Salter.

Women from all over the world, including Ada Salter, attended the 1919 Congress of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, demanding the establishment of a league of nations to prevent future wars.

A century later, activists have recreated the famous congress – with one, Shahina Jaffer, from South Bermondsey, recreating the role that

“It was a great honour,” Ms Jaffer, who has been involved in the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, which organised the conferences, told the News.

“I’m also a researcher, so it was really good because I got to speak to local people while doing my research for it [the recreation].

“We were talking about the same issues they were talking about a hundred years ago. I realised that we hand over issues from generation to generation.”

Activists from WILPF recreated the whole conference with talks and lectures, with each activist recreating a historical figure who took part in it.

The group was born out of the Woman’s Peace Party, which called for the increased enfranchisement of women and for neutral countries to mediate between countries to end wars.

At the 1919 conference, just after the end of the First World War, its delegates warned that the Versailles treaty could sow the seeds for a future war.

Ada Salter, a social reformer and pacifist, was the first woman councillor of Bermondsey and the first woman mayor of anywhere in the British Isles.

She lends her name to the Ada Salter garden in Southwark Park, which she designed, which was opened in 1936.

The emergency services rushed to the aid of the man, who climbed the blue bridge supports of the iconic river crossing shortly before 2pm on Saturday, June 1.

He remained in the precarious position for over an hour.

City of London police told the News that about an hour or so later, the man ‘jumped’ from the bridge into the river below, sparking a police Marine Support Unit to go and rescue him.

“He was conscious and breathing when he was recovered and only suffered a minor injury,” a City of London police spokeswoman said.

Police believe the matter was mental-health related.

The RNLI, a volunteer lifeboat service, were also called to help assist the man.

A spokesperson for the service said that its Tower Lifeboat Station team were called by the coastguard to the incident, which had caused traffic disruption, at around 2.30pm.

Man is talked down from New Kent Road bridge, say police

THE LIFE of a man, whom police said was threatening to jump off a bridge on New Kent Road, was saved after emergency workers managed to talk him down.

Police and paramedics were at the scene, near the Esso Garage, from around 8.30pm last Wednesday, as road closures were put in place.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 8:30pm on Wednesday (May 29) to reports of an incident on New Kent Road, Southwark.

"We sent two ambulance crews and an incident response officer to the scene.

"We also dispatched our hazardous area response team.

"We treated a man at the scene and took him to hospital."

PERIOD POVERTY campaigners in Southwark have welcomed news that from now on police officers will be legally bound to give women held in custody free sanitary products.

The new law, first announced by the government at the end of April, means officers must ask women if they need sanitary items, which they will then be given free of charge.

They will also have to ensure any detainee – whether male or female – can speak to an officer of the same sex about any personal health, hygiene or welfare needs.

The changes are being introduced after a Home Office consultation saw ‘overwhelming’ support from the force and general public.

Susan Dellet, from Southwark’s People Not Poverty, an activist group which campaigns for free sanitary products for all, described period poverty – where women are unable to afford sanitary products or have them withheld – as a particularly denigrating experience for women in prison.

“Women in prison face an array of hardships, coupled with the fact that research shows they are at the mercy of wardens withholding these products to further demean and humiliate,” she said.

cent of the prison population, with higher records of self-harm and drug use in comparison to men’s prisons.

“Most women in prison have already suffered greatly from inadequate care homes, failed fostering, broken homes or physical abuse from partner.

“So to endure period poverty is further injury to women already significantly suffering prior to prison life.”

According to a YouGov survey on behalf of the Mayor of London held in 2018, seventeen per cent of young women aged sixteen to 24 have struggled to afford menstruation products, with fourteen per cent having to improvise with other, unsafe or unhygienic items to stem the bleeding like toilet tissue and even their

own socks.

Since then, the government has announced from 2020, all schools in England and Wales will be able to order sanitary items for their pupils free of charge, and the NHS has also committed to providing pads and tampons to patients for free.

Until the scheme comes fully into operation, organisations such as The Red Box Project are continuing to provide donated tampons and pads to girls at schools across Southwark.

A campaign for dignity for women in custody was led by the Independent Custody Visiting Association (ICVA), a body which inspects custody suites across the country.

Last year, the ICVA shared concerns with the government, saying it had seen women stripped of all clothing and made to wear paper suits without any tampons or pads and limited hand-washing facilities.

The association’s chief executive, Kate Kempen, welcomed the changes: “These changes ensure that the needs of female detainees are addressed, that detainees have basic privacy to use a toilet and access to menstrual products and that dignity is promoted within the police custody environment,” she said.

“No detainee should be left to bleed for want of a difficult conversation or a cheap tampon. These changes should ensure that never happens.”

A FIREARMS gang, including a man from Kennington, have been jailed for a total of 77-and-a-half years after one of the Met's largest ever weapons busts.

All six members were sentenced last Thursday, May 30, at Croydon Crown Court after two separate trials ending in December last year, and March 2019.

The court had previously heard how the gang started operating when Manfred Kurz, a firearms enthusiast from Germany, moved to the UK around 2004 after serving with the German army.

He smuggled ammunition with him bought with his German licence.

The court was told Kurz, who lived in Croydon, started selling the ammunition illegally with his niece, Sian Miller, from South Norwood.

In February 2018, Trident officers searched his niece's home address and found 1,800 rounds of ammunition, two pistols and five canisters of banned CS Spray. They also recovered bulletmaking equipment.

After searching Kurz's home, police found more ammunition and bulletmaking equipment.

An investigation linked four more people to the crimes, including a cousin of Miller's. All were charged with firearms offences.

Manfred Kurz, aged 61, from Ashburton Road in Croydon was jailed for seven-and-a-half years after pleading guilty at his trial to two counts of possession of ammunition and possession of explosive substances. Plus two counts of possesion of firearms and possession of the component parts of a firearm.

Sian Alexandra Miller, aged 25, from Stranger Road in South Norwood was jailed for fifteen years after being found guilty of conspiracy to sell or transfer ammunition.

Mishak Wright-Martin, aged 34, from Kennington Park Road, was jailed for eleven years of conspiracy to sell or transfer ammunition.

Two years after London Bridge attack I T IS two years since terrorists attacked our community at London Bridge and Borough Market.

JustGiving are believed to have taken £500,000 following the attacks here, at the Manchester Arena and after the Grenfell tragedy but recently announced they would end this sick policy thankfully.

Theresa May visited our community after the attack but is now on her way out of office. She warned in 2016 that leaving the EU would bring greater security risks but has pursued exactly that in office. Her legacy is one of failure but the rivals seeking to take over are, if anything, even less likely to have the solutions for our community.

One issue desperate for fixing is Universal Credit, introduced under the Cameron/Clegg Coalition. It was meant to: save money; make benefits simpler;

and get more people into work. It has failed all three aims but has damaged thousands of lives whilst Ministers continue to ignore its faults. I hosted a performance in Parliament of the play The Vortex based on Southwark mums’ experiences of Universal Credit. The play highlights how the system makes it harder for some mums to work, has inbuilt delays and reductions in payments, and fails to fund sufficient childcare.

In the 1820s, Charles Dickens’ family were in Marshalsea Prison on Borough High Street for non-payment of debts, and aged 12 he was forced out of school and into work. 200 years later and, as a direct result of Government policy, debt and poverty are rising in Southwark again with the UN recently describing today’s social security system as a “digital and sanitised version of the 19thcentury workhouse.”

All you need to do is fill in a simple online form and you will get a reply within 48 hours. You can do this anytime, anywhere using your phone, tablet or computer.

There’s also a helpful symptom checker and self-help guide, which will point you in the right direction for the most appropriate NHS service.

Or, if you love smartphone apps, you can download the new NHS App, which allows users to book GP appointments, order repeat prescriptions, view your medical records and access other health services like NHS 111 online.

Again, there’s a symptom checker which can help make sure you get the right support from the right NHS service, in as quick a time as possible.

To get started, all you need to do it go to the Apple or Android store on your smartphone or tablet, search ‘NHS App’, download it and follow the onscreen instructions.

Better digital access does not only improve access to services, it can also help ease some of the pressure on GP surgery reception desks and phone lines – freeing up more time for those patients who prefer more traditional methods of communicating with their GP. Dual crossword Despite the expense over Peter John’s tweet, it’s a good thing the council takes allegations seriously

A

S THE most infamous tweeter in political history touches down into London and immediately blasts London Mayor Sadiq Khan as a ‘loser’, Southwark has also been embroiled in its own bitter twitter storm, as council leader Peter John revealed one tweet criticising Dulwich Hamlet Football Club’s landlord, Meadow, has cost the council £13,000.

Although the club and company now appear to be on good terms, the developer is still trading blows with Cllr John, who has only just been let off the hook after an internal council investigation, prompted by complaints from Meadow’s lawyers, claimed a series of tweets from April last year breached the council’s code of conduct.

Quite what Meadow wanted to get out of the drawn-out process is unclear. Peter John is hardly the only person to have made a stand against the company on social media, or the most vociferous in his comments.

The council has now, after a thorough investigation, spent £13,000 on a process that finally decided the offending tweet ‘could have been worded better’ – not easy, when you’re penning one liners.

Despite the waste, and arguably over-the-top reaction from Meadow, there is some measure of comfort that the council is willing to do the diligent thing and give allegations of breaches in standards their due consideration.

Whether this is the last time a tweet lands Cllr John, or any of his colleagues in trouble, is anyone’s guess. Although the Labour Group’s press operation is tightly controlled, its members appear to have a free rein when it comes to airing their grievances on twitter.

This case is a poor example, but the general argument that debate should be conducted in a respectful manner, and that social media is all too often a toxic space, is a good one.

It’s just that in this instance, given the number of previous redevelopment applications from Meadow for a new stadium and housing rejected in their various iterations, their time certainly could have been put to better use.

Bermondsey, 1983, a victory - but don’t shout about it

ONE LIBERAL Democrat member has shared online an email sent to him by the party which reads:

“Our party has been shaped by famous byelection victories. From Bermondsey in 1983 to Brent East in 2003 and of course Richmond Park in 2016.”

Given the 1983 campaign has gone down in history as infamously bitter, he captioned it with a deadpan: “I mean, yes, the Bermondsey by-election victory is "famous", but I maybe wouldn't open with it.”

Our man is unlucky in Love Island, well so far...

LOCAL FANS of Love Island may have noticed a few familiar faces on the hit ITV2 show, as two of the men on the show are either from Southwark or close by.

Viewers of the series, in which men and women hope to find love in a holiday villa, have wondered whether catering company owner and self-styled ‘sandwich man’ Joe Garratt is from the borough.

“I bet he’s from Bermondsey,” wagered one. ITV tells us, however, that he is from Bromley.

But chef Sherif Lanre, 20, is from Southwark – we’re told he attended a school in the borough, and he plays semi-professional rugby for the Old Alleynian Rugby Club based in Dulwich.

However, the local lad is not having much luck so far: upon entering the villa, not a single woman stepped forward to say she fancied him.

Has a camel washed up in Rotherhithe?

ROTHERHITHE RESIDENTS have reported sightings of a camel washing up on the shore of the Thames.

Fear not, as it is not a real camel, but a costume version used for fancy dresses or pantos.

One person who sighted the eerie object at the Salt Quay had to do a double-take though, as the way the water was moving made it almost appear alive.

Mudlarkers in Rotherhithe report he has been floating there for weeks now – and have quipped that he looks as if he’s got the “right hump” about it all.

OVER TWO thousand young people took to their bikes in Bermondsey on Saturday to promote a message of ‘knives down, bikes up’.

The Bikestormz initiative, which saw riders leave from Southwark Park on a police-guided route, were praised by the popular grime artist Stormzy, who also attended.

The 25-year-old south London rapper praised the initiative to his two million followers on social networking site Instagram, saying: “I rolled up yesterday and saw the most beautiful and POWERFUL movement of youth, love and togetherness.

“There isn’t a single hint of conflict or negativity or violence just pure love and a bunch of kids having fun and enjoying themselves.”

He paid tribute to the efforts of community activist Mac Ferrari, 35, who organised the event, calling him a “true, true legend” – and explained an earlier iteration of the ‘Knives Down, Bikes Up’ event had been the inspiration for bike scenes in his latest music video for the track ‘Vossi Bop’.

Ferarri has previously told the News: “We started it in order to bring young people together in harmony rather than in trouble.

“We wanted to bring them together and see if we could have a ride out where there’s no trouble and ride as one.”

The anti-knife event saw youngsters show off their bike skills in Southwark Park from 11am before leaving and cycling through Jamaica Road, St Thomas Street, and into Southwark Street.

Southwark councillor, William Houngbo, who was involved in the event, said: “It was a great event and Bikestormz has enormous opportunities to offer young people, but it needs additional support – not just financial but also organisational.

“Younger people need to feel more included in society, and they need to hear positive messages from people they can relate to – especially on the issue of turning away from knife-crime.

The councillor, who represents London Bridge and West Bermondsey ward, added: “My thanks go to Mac Ferrari, to Chloe Newman from Southwark Young Advisers and to Sergeant Justin Hills for working with me and for making the event such a success.

“I hope we’ll see more such engagements in future.”

BUSINESSES ANGRY WITH POLICE OVER A WAVE OF BURGARIES

ANOTHER SPATE of burglaries has left business owners and residents in Dulwich out of pocket and frustrated by the Met’s response.

Dulwich Bakery was broken into on Monday, June 3, for the third time in the last twelve months, and had their iPad stolen. Its manager appealed for customers to pop in and ‘help us pay the excess on our inevitable insurance claim’.

In March of this year, the bakery and nearby Café Rouge and COOK were all broken into within the same week and, last October, the bakery had to board up and replace its broken door after a break in one Saturday night.

The Lordship Pub has also been broken into twice within the last fortnight.

Although the pub’s management has CCTV images of the suspect, they claim they have yet to be visited by officers.

The latest break-in came after one anonymous poster on the online East Dulwich Forum advised other residents to make sure they double locked their doors.

BREAKING NEWS: TEEN STABBED ‘MULTIPLE TIMES’ IN CAMBERWELL

A MAN in his late teens was found with ‘multiple stab wounds’ in Camberwell on Tuesday night.

Police were called to Camberwell New Road at around half seven in the evening, along with paramedics, after reports of an attack.

ANOTHER BIKE EVENT AT THE PARK

A DAY of cycling-themed activities will be held in Southwark Park this weekend in a bid to encourage Londoners to get on two wheels.

The Cycleways Festival, on Saturday June 9, comes ahead of work starting on the new Cycleway 4 route between Greenwich and Tower Bridge this summer.

The route will include track on Tooley Street, Jamaica Road, Evelyn Street and Creek Road and also involves a “complete overhaul” of Rotherhithe roundabout and five new pedestrian crossings.

THE ENVIRONMENT chief at Southwark Council has slammed the Liberal Democrats for criticising the new ‘garden tax’, arguing three London boroughs controlled by the opposition party ‘charge more than twice as much’ than the new fee.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, responsible for the environment portfolio at the Labour-run Southwark Council, said nearly a decade of government cuts has left Tooley Street with just 63p out of every pound it used to receive. Taking into account inflation, the council’s funds have effectively more than halved.

“Despite this, the council has not halved its services,” he told the News.

“The council cannot legally cut council tax further without a referendum, and so we are left with the difficult choice of cutting services or finding new ways to raise income.

“Usually, the council has saved money by finding more efficient ways to run things but sometimes it has had to make the difficult choice to ask for a contribution for some services that most other councils already charge for.”

He continued: “We know that new charges are rarely popular but we are

committed to keeping the new charge as one of the lowest in London, despite the financial pressures on the council.”

Responding to an article in last week’s paper, he said: “It is ironic that you quote the Liberal Democrats when the three London boroughs run by them all charge more than twice as much as Southwark for this service.”

The new charge has divided residents, with some in favour saying Southwark is one of the best boroughs in London for waste collection and recycling, and others saying it is a tax on wealth and will only encourage more people to pave over their gardens or start fly-tipping.

If you can’t afford the new fee - £25 this year rising to £30 in 2020, there are other options.

• The most environmentally-friendly option is to compost rather than use the green waste bin • If you have a small garden or can’t compost, it could be cheaper to use the council’s garden waste bag service. It costs £15 for a set of 20 bags that be left out for collection.

• Share a bin with a neighbour • Take your garden waste to Veolia, in Old Kent Road, for free.

SALES OF legal cannabis product CBD are booming across Southwark, but despite growing consumer curiosity, users are advised to be wary of unproven health claims.

Vape store owners in Southwark are seeing increasing sales and interest in CBD oils and e-liquids due to its rising profile in the media and claims of its health benefits.

A number of high profile campaigns involving epileptic children led to the Home Office ‘rescheduling’ to allow medical cannabis products in 2018.

Cannabidiol, also referred to as CBD, is a non-intoxicating compound found in cannabis that does not contain the THC that gets users ‘high’. As a result, cannabidiol is legal to buy in the UK. Confusion remains over the legal status of CBD products. Last week, a Brighton restaurant that serves cannabidiolinfused food was raided by the police for selling the unprocessed ‘flower’ or ‘bud’ form of the plant that can be smoked.

Claims of CBD’s health benefits include its supposed ability to reduce anxiety and depression, restrict cancer growth or lower inflammation.

King’s College London psychopharmacology researcher Amir Englund said studies have shown good results in using CBD to treat certain types of epilepsy and schizophrenia but emphasised that people should always consult their doctor if they are on medication as it could interfere with what they are already they are taking.

Dr Englund said: “Replacing medication with CBD oils is a very bad idea, most products are also lower strength than those in medical tests that showed positive results.

“There is no regulation at all of CBD products, some companies offer test results if you want to check their lab tests but others don’t.”

Dr Englund explained that CBD studies have shown good results treating certain types of epilepsy and schizophrenia, but so far there have only been experimental studies on using it to treat anxiety.

Shop owners in the borough are allowed to sell CBD vape liquid as long as lab tests show it contains less than 0.02 per cent THC. Despite the lack of clarity over its exact health benefits, entrepreneurs in the borough are seeing a clear growth in popularity.

Judith Kerr died on May 22, aged 95.

“There’s a very relaxing element, cannabis smokers buy it as they don’t want to get stoned, as it doesn’t have a psychoactive effect.”

But with a new product that customers are unfamiliar with, how can customers be sure what’s being sold is genuine?

“To assure quality we get it from reputable companies and it’s lab tested.

“When buying products we need lab results to make sure we’re getting what it says it is, if it’s not tested it’s not fit for sale.”

According to Dr Englund, the crux is that most oils are much lower potency than those that used in studies and that oral intake has a very low absorption rate.

“Most CBD products are too weak to reduce anxiety but that’s not to say that they don’t have a placebo effect due to the excitement and the fact that buzzwords such as ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ are used around it a lot, no one

should underestimate the power of a placebo.”

Dr Englund also warned of its effect on drug tests: “There are THC trace amounts but this is too low to get you high, however THC is fat soluble so it can build up to a degree where urine drug tests show positive for cannabis use.”

“Some products even have 0 per cent CBD in them, you’ll pay for it because it has letters on the outside but there’s nothing actually in it.”

But CBD can legally be sold in a variety of forms, such as a ‘food supplement’ in Holland and Barrett, or as an e-liquid to smoke in a vape.

Gino, owner of London Bridge vape shop ‘Shisha Vibe’, said that enquiries have gone up 200 per cent since last year but is cautious with his language when selling it.

“Nobody can make formal claims, it’s so hard to give information, we need clarity to move the industry forward so users can know what they can achieve out of it, the issue behind that is that products need testing.”

He began stocking the CBD products after a curious customer asked about it, and relies on customer feedback to advise buyers what product they might want.

concerned about their health, I took slow steps to understand what it does and always grill customers when they return.

“I ask lots of questions, we can’t make any claims but we are diligent through customer feedback.”

Ed Swain of Vape Superstore agrees with the Government’s cautious approach: “The real grey area in the UK is that because it’s seen as a food supplement you’re unable to go down this authority health route of saying this will help with this condition.

“In my perspective that’s kind of the right approach because there’s more testing to be done, there’s more understanding needed of the benefits of CBD generally to wellbeing and health, but there is a little grey area about what you can and can’t do.

“Legality wise, as long as it's not 0.02 per cent THC then you can sell it, that’s the legality.”

To those who are unconvinced, Holly of HK Hemp offered some final words: “It’s nothing to be afraid of, nothing illegal, nothing illicit, it's similar to cannabis, obviously from the same family but it’s industrial hemp and a completely different product.

“The companies themselves can’t make any medical claims but I would say go and do your research.”

LOVE ISLAND hit our screens again this week on ITV 2 at 9pm on Monday – but locals might have spotted a familiar face this year as one of the contestants is from south-east London.

Drama project for on the school move

TOWER BRIDGE, Robert Browning and Snowsfields primary schools are all taking part in a drama project to help children adjust to the move to secondary school.

Called ‘Transitions’, the project from Half Moon Theatre has helped more than 450 children across seven schools since 2013 use improvisation, storytelling and role-play to share their fears and hopes for year seven.

Beccy Allen, Half Moon’s head of creative learning, said the scheme had been possible thanks to funding from organisations including London Bridge Building Communities Fund, Newcomen Collett Foundation, St Olave’s Foundation Fund, and United St Saviour’s Charity.

She said: “The transition from primary to secondary school can be a very emotional time for many young people and our project allows pupils a safe space in which to share their fears and explore their aspirations. Underneath some bravado, many young people are really quite terrified and have lots of emotions they need to explore in order to grow in confidence and feel positive about the new experiences ahead.”

Joe Garratt, a 22-year-old catering company owner from Bromley, will be among those hoping to find love in the villa on ITV’s hit reality TV show.

The self-described joker says he does not take life too seriously and is a romantic at heart. But his downside is lateness – “I’m always late as well, I can be super late as well”, he said.

The former semi-professional rugby player says he doesn’t have a type.

“For me, it’s just more how we click, if she is fun, outgoing and doesn’t take herself too seriously and is open to talk about things,” he said.

“I’m looking for a connection, obviously initial attraction is key but the connection is the main go-to.”

However, the one thing he can’t stand in potential dates is someone who is “stuck-up” he said.

The 22-year-old describes himself as being around 8.5 on a ten-point scale, and says his teeth and curly hair are his best features – as well as his good “chat.”

But the curly-haired contestant hasn’t always been lucky in love.

“I went to a bar once with a girl and we were having a few drinks,” he said.

“There was an office that I used to deliver sandwiches to and these three women came over to me chanting ‘Sandwich Man, Sandwich Man’, they would not stop!

POLICE HAVE launched an appeal after a man sustained ‘lifechanging’ injuries in a violent assault on London Bridge.

Both are described as men in their twenties and of Middle Eastern or North African appearance, well-dressed and well-groomed. They both had short hair, and one of them had short, trimmed facial hair.

‘Acid’ attack?

A MAN was hospitalised on Monday after police said an unknown substance was thrown over his face in a possible acid attack in Herne Hill.

Police were called at 6.19pm, June 3, after the man, in his 30s, was attacked in Croxted Road, near the Junction with Norwood Road. Hesuffered pain in his eyes doctors say his condition is not life-threatening.

Officers are now investigating what substance was thrown. There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.

Students give mice in library Instagram stardom

KING’S COLLEGE students hoping to hit the books at the university’s library in Borough have unusual study partners – as mice have been spotted running around the building.

Students have created an Instagram account, miceofkcl, to raise awareness of mouse sightings in the New Hunt’s House library on Newcomen Street.

Videos on the account show mice running care-free over computer keyboards at the study facility – and even inside the toastie machine at the library café.

“I’m not going near that toastie maker ever again”, said one student in response to a video which appears to show the

vermin inside the machine, which has been viewed over 2,000 times.

However, others responded that the video may be a hoax.

The ‘Mouse College London’ account states it is “creating awareness of the mouse epidemic in King’s College London. DM your mice sightings.

Anonymity optional.”

Another video shot at the New Hunt’s House library café appears to show a mouse climbing up a bottle of vanilla syrup, used for making coffees.

Other mouse sightings on the account seem to show the creatures eating crumbs from the carpet of the university’s library in Waterloo.

The university has responded that continuous pest work will be increased at New Hunt’s House due to the new mice sightings, and that work at nearby

A spokesperson for the university said: “King’s takes every precaution to prevent pest problems.

“We have a specialist pest control company delivering a continuous programme of prevention and management throughout the year in all our buildings and have increased that work in New Hunt's House following some recent reports from that building.

“Mice will sometimes enter buildings if they are disturbed by external building works outside of King’s and there is a significant amount of work currently underway in the surrounding London Bridge area.

“We would like to thank students who report issues to our help desk as it helps us manage potential issues at the earliest opportunity.”

RIDERS FROM Ebony Horse Club had a special half term treat last weekend with a hack out to Ruskin Park.

The stables, based near Loughborough Junction, have been credited with building the confidence of dozens of young riders to go through their ranks as they learn riding, horse care and teamwork and communication skills.

So far, the club and its eight horses

have meant children from Brixton and nearby have enjoyed 1,700 rides already this year.

The more experienced riders took part in the hack last Friday as a big thank you for their help volunteering around the stables and encouraging beginners.

Ebony Horse Club offers riding lessons to young people aged eight to eighteen, with priority given those who are most in need of support.

Lewis Schaffer has diabetes In previews it is the best thing I’ve seen him do in the years I’ve been following this American in Nunhead. Go see him in the borough, or take a trip to Scotland. He's famous but still free.

EWIS SCHAFFER was born in Brooklyn but then moved to Brockley. Or, to be precise, to Nunhead, which hasn’t got that alliterative ring to it but is close by in SE London, writes Michael Holland…

Lewis had done stand up comedy in New York and continued that line of work once he arrived here. ‘I first visited in 1975 and was shocked at the poverty of the place. I moved here permanently in 2000 and now I am broke,’ he tells me in an attempt at a joke, or an admission of his comedic talents.

‘People used to say I was funny,’ he says in his New York-Nunhead accent that differs from the Mean Streets meet Goodfellas movies inasmuch as he sounds as if he is going to cry at any moment rather than make you an offer you can’t refuse. He continues in his woe-isme whine: ‘At least I would try to be funny; a friend goaded me into going up the Comic Strip and auditioning.’ He ends the story there so I’m guessing it didn’t go well.

Schaffer says his early comedic influences were 'the insult comic Don Rickles, screaming Sam Kinison, and egotistical Al Lubel… I could watch Englishman Stewart Lee all day, and I wish Patrice O'Neal wasn't dead…’ There was a respectful pause for the deceased by the man who campaigned hard to

save the woodlands in Southwark’s cemeteries, even going as far as chaining himself to a JCB. ‘I remember Bill Burr when he wasn't that funny, so never rule anyone out,’ he concluded.

In London Lewis has had his own shows in various places: There was the legendary ‘Free Until I’m Famous’ show in the West End where he would perform, pass round a hat, then take everyone to the pub to spend whatever was in the hat.

He has a regular radio show on Resonance FM (104.4fm) every Monday at 6.30. He invites someone in to interview but it often ends up as 30 minutes of chaos that can either be funny or chaotic. Straight after he hosts an open mic evening in the Kings Arms, Newcomen Street, Borough, that has uncovered some excellent new talent. And on Sundays Schaffer can be found performing in The Nun’s Head, SE15, as part of their regular comedy night.

Lewis has been a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe and due to his unpredictability he has become almost a must-see show there. He summarises thus: ‘The shows have upset some people, however, I have managed to make cancer, strokes, and Alzheimer's funny occasionally.’

I wondered how his comedy had changed since he arrived on these shores: ‘I used to be a straight joke teller in the New York style, then I

was, what you could call, a "chaos comic" - where I was putting on performance pieces. Now I just try to make a point in a funny way.’

The point he is trying to make now is ‘about how I discovered that I have diabetes, and that everyone has diabetes and we are all going to die of it, and how we've been lied to about it.’ That seems about right for Lewis Schaffer.

How is his health these days. He swears by a plant-free, animalbased, low carb diet that he says has ‘cleared up my psoriasis, the wart on my hand is fading, I don't have swollen hands or feet anymore, I am sleeping without my CPAP sleep machine and I am on half meds for high blood pressure. Also, my gums have stopped bleeding, and my heart rate is up - It was at 38 bpm. I could go on but this is a family newspaper.’

So that’s the show folks and in previews it is the best thing I’ve seen him do in the years I’ve been following this American in Nunhead.

Father’s patriarchal ways break up family

If you’re a fan of naturalism and fancy a bit of Geordie Chekhov anytime soon then I would say Rutherford and Son would be a sure thing for you.

A NICE stroll along the South Bank leads me to the National Theatre and a visit to Rutherford and Son on the Lyttleton stage, a return to the National after 25 years for Githa Sowerby's exemplar of early 20th century Naturalism, writes Christopher Peacock...

In this production you can see that directer Polly Findlay wants to create an atmosphere within the auditorium from the very start. There is live choral music being sung and the stage is set with a rain curtain. The heavily detailed living room space of a turn of the century middle class home is an excellent piece of stage design. The home is that of Mr Rutherford, an owner of a

glassworks whose fate is not looking too positive.

Like many naturalist plays of its era, not a lot happens and it is more of an examination of family and class. In this case we watch the family slowly unravelling as Mr. Rutherford’s patriarchal manner ends up driving his two sons and daughter away. As Rutherford strives to cement his family in the middle classes and leave a legacy, his business is slowly failing. Roger Allam brings a presence to the role that fills the room in his depiction of an overbearing father figure to all three of his children, until they ultimately leave. My only criticism was that being set in Northumberland the accent work for

some of the cast needed refining and was at times hard to understand. That being said, Roger Allam’s portrayal of Mr Rutherford is brilliant, and Justine Mitchell as Janet (Mr Rutherford’s daughter) was fantastic - the two standouts in a very strong cast.

Bowie sculptures in Biscuit Factory exhibition ‘FANTASTIC VOYAGE is the exhibition that represents all my artistic experience and is my tribute to David Bowie. I will show all my sculptures dedicated to him,’ says the Italian sculptor, Maria Primolan.

Primolan first attended Vittorio Veneto Art School in the Piedmontese state capital, then she graduated in Architecture at Polytechnic of Turin.

She creates mainly wooden, bronze or terracotta sculptures and has been involved in furniture design, drawing and producing unique pieces of furniture and artistic handicraft.

In 2016-2017 she started several works inspired by Bowie, and by 2019 she had created many sculptures made of wood and terracotta, using the raku Japanese technique.

Why David Bowie: ‘I started to listen to David Bowie’s songs when I was a teenager. I have a clear memory of coming out of the underground in Piazza Duomo, Milan, wearing headphones: with a new feeling of freedom and of a new world to be discovered. I was 15.

‘By the end of the ‘80s I had developed other musical tastes but some years ago I listened to Life on

Mars again and it was then that I reconnected to Bowie’s music. On 10th January 2016 I felt a deep pain within, as if a close friend or member of my family had passed away. I asked myself, “How can this have happened?” David Bowie had become so deeply rooted in me. Like many fans, I visited the exhibition “Bowie Is” when it came to Bologna.

In November 2016 I travelled to London to watch “Lazarus” in King’s Cross Theatre and of course took the opportunity to visit the mural in Brixton. Upon my return to Italy I found that artistically I had become completely focused on David Bowie: my first tribute to him would be sculptured as an “Angel”.

Charlie Fowler, singer with David Live, will be at the opening of the exhibition with a live performance of some of Bowie’s songs.

The Kennington man who recreated the Mayflower

ext year, a small wooden ship will become the focus of attention on both sides of the Atlantic, as the four-hundred anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower arrives.

The vessel, which set off from Rotherhithe in 1620, and whose captain is buried in the area’s St Mary’s Churchyard, transported the first English settlers, known as the Pilgrims, to the New World.

The physical ship that will be at the centre-piece of the anniversary celebrations will not be the original – but a replica, born out of a passion project from a Kennington man who from the experience of war became convinced that a ‘Mayflower II’ would help strengthen Anglo-American relations.

That man, Warwick Charton, was born the son of a Fleet Street journalist in Chelsea, later living on Kennington Park Road, in 1918.

Following in his father’s footsteps, he held a number of reporter roles before signing up for the war in 1939.

On one early assignment at the Daily Sketch tabloid, Warwick was sent out by his editor to investigate a ghostly apparition. He returned to file his copy including direct quotes from the ‘ghost.’

The anecdote, recounted in a new biography of Warwick, by his son Randal Charton, shows something of the man’s personality – which would ultimately lead him to recreating the historic ship from scratch and gifting it to the American people for the nominal fee of $1.

He first conceived of the idea in wartime, during which he served in the Eighth Army in North Africa.

Warwick was the founding editor of several army newspapers, including the well-respected Eighth Army News.

Publishing a string of papers in the middle of war was a test of resourcefulness – even as a wellconnected press officer on General Montgomery’s staff.

“It was a master’s degree in manufacturing something from nothing; the perfect training in how to build a ship for which no plans existed,” writes Randal in his biography of his father.

The actual seed of the idea to rebuild the Mayflower seems to have come from a combination of love of history and a keen awareness of the need to keep the new American superpower on-side in the postwar world.

Warwick recalled a time as a child when he was reminded by his history teacher that 1066 was a very important date in English history. “Now what is the next important date?” he asked the class.

“1067,” an insolent Warwick rushed to ask – for which he was given a heavy blow to the head as punishment.

But later, almost as a sorry, his history teacher gave him a massive tome entitled ‘The Decline and Fall of the West’.

Many years later in 1947 – long after Warwick had left prep school and studied at Epsom College, one of the country’s top private schools – he picked up a copy of the journals of William Bradford, the leader of the first tiny colony in what was then called ‘Plimouth’.

Little is mentioned in the journal of the ship which carried the Pilgrims there, instead focussing on the trials and tribulations of the colony and its motivating ideals.

But nevertheless, the idea stuck: Warwick decided that there should be a replica of the Mayflower.

He turned to the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich for help. No plans of the original Mayflower exist. In 1620, one did not need to register plans of the

ship with the authorities.

A professor at the museum, RC Anderson, however, was an expert on the design of 17th century ships, and it was from his extensive knowledge that Warwick drew.

Yet it never occurred to the journalist that he would build the replica himself.

Warwick instead thought it would make the ideal newspaper promotion in the heyday of print media.

Over the course of boozy lunches, he would get agreement from newspaper magnates to fund the endeavour. In the cold and sober light of the next morning, their accountants would disabuse them of the idea.

Despite his position as a freelance reporter on the Daily Express, Warwick could not get the newspaper’s proprietor,

Lord Beaverbrook to agree to the idea, nor his friend, Hugh Cudlipp, then the editor of the Daily Mirror.

Instead, he turned to commercial backers and individuals, explaining that any money made would be given back to an educational trust, which had MPs, dukes and army generals on its board.

It was then, much like the original Mayflower itself, not plain sailing. Costs mounted, as Warwick insisted that the ship be as perfect a replica as possible, even down to the ink-pots on the captain’s desk.

An initial £280,000 budget was swiftly doubled, while Warwick would beg suppliers for freebies or favourable terms to keep the project on track.

To bring in extra money, he even turned the building of the ship into an exhibition with a notice reading: “Come and look

round the hull of Mayflower II. Entrance fee: two shillings.”

By the time the ship set sail, nearly 250,000 had reportedly paid the amount.

Despite the financial difficulties, by 1956 the costs had been covered and the ship almost entirely built. But yet another blow was dealt to the project, this one far out of Warwick’s hands.

In 1956, the Suez Crisis threatened to rupture Anglo-American relations permanently.

Donors urged Warwick to delay the sailing of the replica ship to America. But amid the charged geo-political atmosphere, there came opportunity too.

Cartoons in the Charlton family archives show that some picked up on the idea of Mayflower II mending seriously damaged relations on both side of the Atlantic.

Mayflower II set sail from Plymouth, England in 1957 to widespread media attention. The National Geographic magazine described the voyage as one of the great wonders of modern times, while Life carried news of the trip on its front page.

When the ship docked in the harbour at Plymouth, Mass on June 13, after 54 days at sea, it was greeted at the dock by VicePresident Richard Nixon and John F Kennedy, then just a junior senator.

Several months later, in the offices of a law firm in Boston, Warwick signed a contract formally giving the ship to the American nation for the nominal sum of just $1.

A labour of love and many years was then finally over: At age 38, he had given the American people something they did not have – a piece of their own history.

The ship is currently being restored at the Plimoth Plantation, a living history museum in Massachusetts, where it is due to be unveiled in time for the 2020 anniversary.

It has been visited by over 25 million Americans since it was given to the nation.

2. The effect of the experimental orders will be to prohibit vehicles, except pedal cycles and permitted vehicles, from entering into or proceeding: - (a) in any part of FRIARY ROAD, which lies between a point 26 metres north-west of the northern kerb-line of Bird in Bush Road and its north-western extremity during the prohibited hours of 8am – 10am and 2pm – 4pm on Mondays to Fridays during the school-term (the dates of which will be determined by the staff of St Francis RC Primary School); and will be physically enforced with traffic signs and the installation of a movable barrier located north of the access road to Friary Estate; and (b) in any part of LANDCROFT ROAD, which lies south-west of the south-western kerb-line of Whateley Road and the north-eastern kerb-line of Silvester Road during the prohibited hours of 8am – 10am and 2pm – 4pm on Mondays to Fridays during the school-term (the dates of which will be determined by the staff of Harris Primary Academy East Dulwich); and will be physically enforced with traffic signs and the installation of two movable barriers located (i) at its junction with Whateley Road and, (ii) at its junction with Silvester Road.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable works by SGN, it intends to make an order the effect of which would be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

JLL’S LATEST residential research report highlights that property prices in south east London are set to rise are set to rise faster than much of Greater London thanks to significant regeneration throughout the area.

According to the report, more than 31,000 homes are in the planning pipeline, with some areas set to see dramatic changes to their dynamics and streetscape. For example, the masterplan at Canada Water and Surrey Quays will create a new urban centre, and a change of focal point which will significantly enhance its appeal and profile. The Old Kent Road corridor is also set for dramatic change.

This neglected area, with the A2 as its domineering spine, has seen a spate of planning applications where an array of towers scattered along its route will alter the streetscape, skyline and demographics. As well as these new changes, other parts of south east London, such as Greenwich and Deptford, North Greenwich and Elephant and Castle will continue to blossom into even more vibrant and appealing London neighbourhoods.

The area is also set to benefit from enhanced transport infrastructure. The proposed Bakerloo Line extension could be delivered as early as 2028 with the current preferred route extending the line from Elephant and Castle, down the Old Kent Road to Lewisham. This would significantly improve public transport access along the Old Kent Road where there is presently little tube connectivity.

At the event on 8 June its team will be unveiling colourful stepping stones to play on as well as a series of brass rubbings of the park’s plants and wildlife. These will be dotted around the park as part of an educational ecology trail along with large colouring maps to encourage kids to get creative and start exploring the park and new play space.

There will be range of food and drink options available at the summer fête with Kidbrooke’s newly opened village pub, The Depot, hosting a pop-up outdoor bar. The RARE Farmers’ Market will be relocating for the day from Royal Arsenal Riverside, so visitors can grab a bite to eat and enjoy delicious gourmet food in the fête’s exclusive picnic area.

Pupils from Kidbrooke Village’s schools will be at the heart of the fête. Holy Family Catholic Primary School choir will be kicking things off with a lively performance, while Wingfield Primary School will be manning festival games including a coconut shy and a hook-a-duck carousel.

There will be lots of different stalls to browse, with many focused on helping people understand how they can reduce their carbon

footprints. To get visitors thinking about their energy consumption, people can hop on an electric bike and challenge a friend to a head-tohead ‘race’ to generate enough human-powered energy to boil a small amount of water.

And if that isn’t enough peddle-power for people to get involved in, the main stage, which is sponsored by energy provider E.ON, will be powered by 14 bikes using renewable energy – people need to hop on a bike and get those legs pumping to ensure that the music doesn’t stop!

To motivate people to step up to the plate, participants will be entered into a raffle to win free food and drink from The Depot pub – so get those cycling shoes on and come on down to the fête for a chance to win a tasty cocktail or pizza.

For those looking for further advice on how they can be more eco-friendly, E.ON will be giving demonstrations of their latest energy saving technology on the main stage, while IKEA will be running short masterclasses packed with handy tips on upcycling to help people prolong the life of old furniture and make the most of waste materials which might otherwise go to landfill.

SACHA HICKEY has the world in her sights after adding a European Junior crown to her already glittering array of medals.

Fisher ABC’s Sacha, 15, scored points wins over opponents from Turkey, Albania, Romania and a Russian in the final, in the tournament hosted in Romania, to go with her Junior ABAs title and MultiNations crown.

Sacha, a former Millwall Lionesses footballer, had already claimed the Golden Girls championship in Sweden and has ambitions to box in the Olympics and turn professional.

Her coach, Fisher legend Steve Hiser, explained the foundation of her success and the work ethic she shows at the Druid Street base.

“I must say she’s always in the gym, she spars with all the lads,” Steve said. “They don’t hold back on her and she gives as good as she gets, and lots of times she comes out on top.

“The Romanian girl should have been pulled out, she should have got three counts.

“Sacha’s a fan of [Irish world champion] Katie Taylor and all those girls. Hopefully next year she should be in the Junior World Championships.”

Fisher close to boss announcement

FISHER SAY they have received “a large number of applications” for the managerial role vacated by Dean Harrison at the end of last season.

Harrison departed after guiding Fisher to third place in their first season back in the SCEFL Premier Division.

The Rotherhithe club have revealed there has been an increase in turnover in the last two seasons and they are no longer losing money.

Fisher are close to confirming their next boss.

“The club has received a large number of applications for the vacant managerial role, and is in the process of finalising its shortlist and arranging interviews with candidates,” Fisher said in a statement.

“We hope to be in a position to have positive news to report at the club’s AGM...[which] will take place on Wednesday, June 12 at St Paul’s and will get under way at 7pm.

“Off the pitch, too, the club has been moving in the right direction: turnover has grown significantly in each of the last two seasons, and the club is finally no longer loss-making. As a fan-owned club, we are absolutely committed to being run sustainably and to growing organically. The club will continue to spend only what it generates, and we think this is the best way of ensuring that there is still a Fisher FC in five years, ten years and beyond.

“A reminder also that, as a fan-owned,

volunteer-run club, we are always on the look-out for more help. No Downside to pool news

BERMONDSEY’S TRITONS Swim School CIC said it is “extremely pleased” to hand back the running of the swimming programme to Downside Fisher Youth Club.

Tritons have been over the programme since 2015, when Downside approached them with a view to running the pool on Druid Street, which had been in danger of closing down.

A Tritons spokesperson said: “Tritons believed that by taking the swimming lesson programme in house, the swimming pool could be made self-supporting and the pool would not need to be closed.

“Tritons undertook the role to set up a swimming programme at Downside to demonstrate the viability of this approach. The original plan was for this to happen over a five-year period but we are extremely pleased to say that the swimming lesson programme has progressed so well that we are ready to hand over to Downside Fisher Youth Club a year earlier than scheduled.

“It is great to know that Downside Fisher Youth Club, a charity dating back to 1908, and a well-established part of the local community, will continue to have a pool and continue to provide swimming lessons for the foreseeable future.

“Tritons will stay involved with the swimming programme and provide support and training to the Downside staff.”

A FINE all-round performance saw Dulwich record their first victory of the season in Division 2 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship, defeating leaders Dorking by six wickets.

Dorking elected to bat, but the first runs did not come until the 28th ball of the innings as Jon Lodwick and

Kamran Munawar exploited early life in the pitch. They each took two wickets to leave Dorking reeling on 214 after 11 overs. But prolific opener Bradley Erasmus was still there, and he combined with his skipper Toby Blood to add 31 for the fifth wicket. The pace men gave way to the spinners, and Ben Swanson, in his first game of the season, and Salaar Waqar each took a wicket to make it 59-6 after 20 overs.

Chris Ward then helped Erasmus add 46 before giving Waqar his second wicket. Alex Gledhill removed Kieron Corbett, but Charlie Edwards then joined Erasmus in a stand of 30 for the ninth wicket.

Alex Leyshon, the third slow left-

armer, joined the attack, and brought Erasmus’ accomplished innings to an end. The opener had dominated the Dorking batting, making 83 (off 123 balls) out of a total of 144-9. The last wicket pair added a further 15 before Leyshon took his second wicket, leaving Edwards unbeaten on 17, the second highest score of the innings.

Dorking were all out for 159 in the 47th over.

The wickets were shared around, with each of the six bowlers getting at least one, but none of them taking more than two. They were well supported by their fielders, while keeper Will Bancroft celebrated his recall to the first team with three catches and a stumping.

Erasmus then opened the bowling in company with Corbett, but they were unable to make early inroads into the Dulwich batting. Skipper Ed Stolle launched the reply in positive fashion, scoring 33 of the first 35 runs (the other two being extras), before falling to change bowler Ward in the eighth over.

Robbie Catling fell two balls later, to bring in Matt Marfani to join opener Leyshon.

The pair added 42 in 12 overs for the third wicket before Leyshon went for 18. Marfani advanced to 24 before becoming the fourth wicket with the score on 89 after 23.1 overs. Waqar thus joined Nick Gunning with 71 still needed but the pair proved equal to the

task. They were aided by a succession of wides, two of which went to the boundary, and also by an injury to keeper Blood in the 11th over that had forced him to relinquish the gloves; his replacements were not up to the same standard. The target was reached off the last ball of the 39th over, with Gunning on 33 (off 48 balls) and Waqar 32 (off 60).

Dulwich climb two places to seventh, but there are only five points separating the bottom four teams. This weekend the format switches to the time games.

Dulwich have a crucial home match against Sanderstead, who stand two places but just three points below them in the table.

THERE WAS a mixed reaction from Millwall fans when it was confirmed this week that David Martin was leaving the club to sign for West Ham.

Martin, 33, said it was a “dream” to join the club his father, Alvin, played 598 times for over three decades from the 1970s.

Millwall had offered Martin a new contract but he opted for a two-year deal at the London Stadium, where he links up with fellow stoppers Lukasz Fabinaski and another new signing, Roberto, The Lions currently have no senior goalkeeper contracted beyond June 30.

Martin officially completes his move to the Hammers when his current Millwall terms expire on July 1.

“Signing for West Ham United is a dream, both for me and my family,” Martin said. “I’ve grown up around West Ham and to come to my boyhood club is a dream.

“I came to games as a kid as one of the supporters in the stands at the Boleyn Ground. I loved watching my Dad play, and I’ve continued coming to games throughout my career.

“You can see the impact the fans can have on the team and it gives you goose bumps. The fans at West Ham are brilliant and it’s fantastic to be a part of this great club.

“I’ve always been an enthusiastic and positive person. I’ll always go into training every day with that attitude to compete with Lukasz (Fabianski) and Roberto.”

Martin was recommended to West Ham by their goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero. The Hammers’ director of football Mario Husillos welcomed the new addition. He said: “We are happy to sign David Martin. He was excited about our project from the first moment we spoke to him.

“As well as knowing his career and his last season in the Championship, we also had excellent reports about him both as a professional and as a person from Xavi Valero, who has worked with him before at Liverpool.

“Because of all these reasons, he was an obvious target and we are pleased to have him at the club.”

Martin joined Millwall in September 2017 and played fifteen times in two seasons, not becoming a first-team regular until February of the last campaign.

Millwall were in relegation danger late in the season, but Martin kept a clean sheet in the third-last game, a 0-0 draw against Stoke at The Den, the result that ultimately guaranteed a third consecutive season in the Championship when Rotherham lost their next fixture at West Brom.

After the move was confirmed, Martin posted on Twitter: “I would like to put on record my thanks to everyone at Millwall football club. I’ve had a great two years and I wish you all the very best for the future.”

Harris said: “I can only wish him all the best and speak highly of him as a fella and a goalkeeper. I hope he goes on and enjoys the rest of his career.”

Many Lions fans understood the former Liverpool and MK Dons man’s decision.

Harry Gunns wrote: “Can’t complain, if he didn’t get confirmation of first choice keeper, might as well go somewhere else and get a considerable amount more [money].”

Peter Shoults added: “Thanks Dave for playing for us and it’s a shame we could[n’t] keep you here at the Den, but

hope all goes well and if you get bored you know where to come when we are in trouble.”

Twitter user Mr HK also added his support: “Completely understand your decision in going to your boyhood team (even though it’s West Ham). However your performances in the league during the second half of last season saved us from getting relegated to League One. All the best for the future.”

Other Millwall supporters like Kane Power, though, couldn’t resist a dig: “He’ll drop a clanger in your net...”

Harris revealed in 2017 that Millwall had been offered a top-flight young player but refused the deal as the club in question wanted a guarantee over playing time.

There are often also hefty fees involved and vast wages. Abraham, for instance, earns £50,000 a week at Chelsea, of which Villa were contributing a considerable chunk. Even if Millwall could afford to operate on that scale, Harris would be wary of acquiring a player on loan on a salary way above the squad average and the unsettling effect that could have.

Mason went south of the river to The Den. Harris has previously signed players on loan from a higher division: Jed Wallace and George Saville (Wolves) and Jake Cooper (Reading) dropped down from the Championship to League One in 2015-16 and subsequently went on to sign permanently.

Harris prefers loans with a view to permanent deals, but admits the current inflated market opens the door for a foray into the pool of Premier League youngsters whose clubs will be seeking to send them out for senior first-team experience this summer.

“I’ve been honest in the past to say I didn’t really want loan players because I think it’s sometimes best having your own players and developing them with us,” Harris told the News.

Afterwards you go to the Black and Blue restaurant in London Bridge. Then all of a sudden chaos breaks out, when three terrorists start randomly stabbing people.

I can’t even start to imagine what it would be like to be caught up in it.

Just think about the Black and Blue Restaurant for a minute. It has a very small table area and then goes back into a bar area. There is a restaurant to the right as you look in. It has full-length glass doors that are normally wide open on hot London evenings.

that night made him decide, on the spur of the moment, to stand up to three men with large knives. Also, don’t forget, all three of them had suicide vests on, yet Roya didn’t care that potentially they were going to kill him. He cared more about the people in that restaurant that he could help escape the terrorists.

He made sure other people around him got a few seconds to get away. In my eyes that makes him a hero and in the eyes of society that should make him a hero.

So what if Roy has had a troubled past? Who doesn’t? I’m not going to go into details of that past, it’s not my place.

Can you honestly tell me that those people who managed to have a couple of seconds to run out the back door or even out the front door and not get attacked by theose three terrorists really care about Roy’s past?

hunger and desire to play for our club. It’s changing, it’s such a tough [permanent] market to shop in to get value for money.

We got close to a couple of loan players last summer that went on to do well.

“What comes with that is the demands of the big clubs, and I don’t blame them for that because they want to look after their players, their assets.

“What is evident is that some clubs want to loan out their players and have it all their own way. There can be big loan fees and big penalties if they don’t play.

Financially it’s risky. With financial fair play (FFP) you don’t want to fall short by getting fined by clubs for not playing their players.

“I’m all for taking players and giving them the opportunity to strengthen us, but it has to be on our terms as well.

“There’s a balance between taking a risk

on a younger player when you don’t know what they’re going to do but they do have potential.

“What you find is that those players don’t become available for loan until right at the end of the window, the end of July, the start of August. The big clubs need to take them on pre-season tours to fill teams.

“We are turning over a lot of players this summer. Nine have gone already and there will be more going. We do need to bring players in and we won’t be able to get them all before the start of pre-season or before we go away [to Portugal] in July.

“Naturally there might be an opportunity for us to delve into that market at the end of the July because we’ll still be trying to bring players in. If they become available [for loan] that could suit us.

“If the players we want become available before that, then we will act.”

Would you instead just care that someone put their life on the line so you didn’t get hurt?

On that night there were other Millwall fans there. One was Gerard and he only did one or two media interviews. Most people only remember Roy, which is fine, as there was loads of media interest in him.

But what Gerard did is another example of a complete act of being a hero. He chased the terrorists around Borough Market. He threw anything you can think of and was shouting at them that they were cowards (and words that obviously I can’t say in this newspaper). What drove Gerard to run round after three men carrying knives and wearing suicide vests?

Most of us would like to think we would respond heroically, but until that situation arises we don’t know how we

would truly act.

June 3 will always stay in my mind as the day when Millwall fans went above and beyond the call of any human being that night, yet the establishment and our peers in power have decided that possibly because of their pasts and maybe of who they are they’re not great adverts for heroes.

I think this is an absolute travesty. In fact it makes me absolutely ashamed of our society and our establishment that no one wants to recognise them officially.

I strongly believe after reading the inquest transcripts based on that night that these two individuals are permanently affected by what happened for the rest of their lives. I would ask have they received the correct mental health reviews, PTSD help or even trauma counselling. I don’t know.

What I do know is that I will never ever forget that these two individuals were heroes to so many individuals that night and those individuals could not give a rats’ arse about their past so why should anyone!

Please do read the transcripts from the inquest and really understand what these two Millwall fans actually did.

I was so proud when the club agreed that we should recognise and show the four individuals caught up in the London Bridge attacks and who acted so bravely that they’re part of the Millwall family and we are there for them.

Roy and Gerard, you’re heroes in the Millwall family and hopefully wider society will hear your stories and agree.

I am going to do whatever I can in my position as Millwall Fan on the Board to help these Lions out.

Lions boss Neil Harris has made recruiting a striker and at least two goalkeepers his priorities this summer, as well as strengthening in other areas after last season’s 21stplace finish.

It will be a busy transfer window for the club, and Harris has already revealed there are bids lodged for several players.

Lee Gregory’s departure this summer has left a gap to fill up front, and there are doubts over skipper Steve Morison’s future at the club.

Morison activated another year on his contract last season and will be 36 in August. He has previously told the News he has no intention of hanging up his boots yet.

With Tom Elliott and Fred Onyedinma available for transfer, and Harris only going as far as saying that he expected Aiden O’Brien to be at the club at the start of pre-season rather than the season, the forward positions could see a lot of change this summer.

Tom Bradshaw is set to be fully recovered and fit to start pre-season

on June 25 after being out since last November with knee ligament damage.

Millwall want a target man, and the News understands they see Smith fitting into that category. He has vast Championship experience, having also played for Fulham, Bristol City and Leeds United.

The 6ft 6ins striker – who turns 30 this week – joined QPR for around £500,000 from Fulham on a threeyear deal in the summer of 2017 and has scored 21 goals in 92 league games.

Birmingham-born Smith enjoyed his second-most productive season in 2017-18 when he scored eleven league goals, including an 85thminute equaliser against the Lions as the hosts came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Loftus Road.

Smith hasn’t always been a regular starter in his career, but offers a serious aerial threat and has the ability to link up with different strike partners.

A feature of Smith’s career is that he has rarely found clubs with managerial stability, playing under nine different bosses at Fulham and Leeds in five seasons.

QPR, meanwhile, appointed Mark Warburton in May to take over from John Eustace who had been in caretaker charge following the sacking of Steve McLaren.

With Harris heading into his fifth full season in charge, that kind of stability could appeal to Smith.

Millwall yet to receive bids for players

MILLWALL HAVEN’T received any bids for players so far this summer – which has pleased boss Neil Harris.

The next transfer window doesn’t officially open until July 1, but the Lions have already submitted offers for players and confirmed the signing of Alex Pearce. Goalkeeper David Martin is also joining West Ham. Last summer a number of Millwall players were the subject of bids from clubs with millions to spend.

Glasgow Rangers were reportedly prepared to pay £3million for Jake Cooper, before Middlesbrough significantly disrupted Millwall’s first week of the season by bidding for George Saville and Jed Wallace, the former eventually moving to Teeside for £8million at the end of the window.

But that was after an eighthplace Championship finish the previous season. The Lions’ struggles last term could mean there isn’t the same demand for their players, though Harris will listen to offers for the likes of Tom Elliott and Fred Onyedinma.

Otherwise Harris is hoping for a quieter summer as he focuses on recruitment rather than the potential departures of his most important players.

“No, it’s been very pleasant,” Harris said when asked if there had been incoming offers, “and I don’t want any either. I say but we’ve got players with value that we want to build the team and squad around.

“There are players that might move on to pastures new, but we have to wait to see what happens with them.

“The players we want to keep we certainly don’t want any interest in.”
