ALL THREE Southwark Labour MPs have thrown the idea of breaking rank and voting for a pro-EU rival party out the window, saying they are backing Labour in today’s European elections despite its woefully confused stance on Brexit.

Neil Coyle, Helen Hayes and Harriet Harman, all prominent supporters of staying in the EU, have been out in force canvassing for Labour in their overwhelmingly pro-Remain constituencies.

Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, gave a stinging riposte when asked by the News if she accepted that a vote for Labour was a vote for Brexit; even claiming the only party to stop Brexit so far was Labour.

She said: “There is a strong risk in this election that the hard right Brexit Party is the majority representative of the UK in the European Parliament, and I think that will be a very dangerous outcome both for the EU and for politics in the UK. “Labour is the only party that can stop Nigel Farage.

“All of Labour’s candidates in London support a confirmatory referendum on any Brexit deal, but more importantly than that, since MEPs will not have any say in delivering Brexit, they are strongly principled Labour candidates who will fight for social justice, workers’ rights, environmental protection and the proRemain views of Londoners in the European Parliament.”

She denied the unexpected election, held after the government agreed an extension on the UK’s deadline until later this year, was a de facto single-issue public vote on Brexit.

“This is not a single issue vote on Brexit, it is the election of MEPs to represent us in the European Parliament.

“MEPs have no say on the delivery of Brexit, but their values, views and policy platform will affect how we are represented in Europe.”

“The Liberal Democrats worked in coalition with the Tories to implement the cruel and vindictive austerity policies, which led to many disenfranchised people voting for Brexit in the first place.

“Brexit is an issue which cuts across party lines.

“The Labour Party has an important job to speak to the country as a whole in a context where the country is deeply divided, but it is the Labour Party which has stopped Brexit from happening on March 29 by voting to extend Article 50 and the Labour Party which has twice whipped in favour of a confirmatory vote.”

The Southwark News is proud to be the only independent, paid for newspaper in London.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

“Whilst I agree that Labour members’ views and values have not always shone through in the national Party’s position at all times, it is a requirement of Labour Party rules that our members vote Labour in elections,” he said.

Harriet Harman dismissed the idea she would vote for anyone but Labour, but did not respond to the News when it was put to her a vote for Labour was a case of putting political tribalism above her constituents.

Anood Al-Samerai, Southwark’s Liberal Democrat leader, said voting Labour and being pro-EU was incompatible.

“We have a simple message: Bollocks to Brexit. Love it or hate it at least you know what we stand for,” she told the News.

“What I would say to Southwark’s three MPs is this. If you really want to stay in the

EU then vote for the Liberal Democrats.

“Now is the time to put party politics to one side.”

Council leader Peter John, said he still believed staying in the EU was the best outcome for Southwark and the UK – and claimed the party supported that position despite ‘many views on Brexit within the party’.

“Labour does not support this Tory Brexit, which is why we support a People’s Vote if a General Election is not called immediately,” he said.

At Tooley Street, just one Labour councillor so far, James Coldwell, has quit the party or publicly backed voting for another, blasting the party as ‘missing in action’ since 2016’s referendum.

This week he was out campaigning with pro-Remain cross-party campaigners - but did not tell the News who would have his vote.

MOST OF us could often do with a scream in public but have to resist the temptation out of worry of what others might think.

Now a solution might be at hand after two local residents have built the ‘Time Booth’ – a home-made soundproofed box for people to scream into as loudly as they can.

The bright blue Tardis-like booth is the brainchild of friends Nadia Filitova, of Rotherhithe, and Paul

Quigley, who lives in South Norwood.

At a trial run of the box, placed outside the Tate Modern last weekend with the help of Bermondsey-based LRC Couriers, during Mental Health Awareness Week, curious passers-by – including the News – tried out the concept.

Nadia stumbled upon the idea of a screaming booth when she was in a spa with Paul and had to let out her work anger and frustrations.

“I was just feeling a bit frustrated with work, and Paul suggested I put my head under the water and scream,” said Nadia, aged 34. “It helped me release the tension of it all.”

With the help of Paul, a builder by trade, Nadia set about creating the prototype booth in her spare time and using their own funds. It has taken around four months to build, costing around £1,500.

Reaction to the booth has been overwhelmingly positive, said Paul.

“When they come out and you say ‘do you want to go again’, they all say yes.”

Around 200 people had tried out the scream-booth in four hours, estimated Nadia.

While some friends and family were initially taken aback, they have all gotten on-board, said Paul, who grew

up in Elephant and Castle. “They say they could do with one at home!”

This may yet be the plan, said Nadia.

There are two main ideas for a fully sound-proofed booth, she told the News: either to form part of an art project, or to produce as a destressing aid for under-pressure workers.

“People want their own privacy [to scream], but it’s really difficult to achieve,” she explained.

However, the final model would hopefully not emit any sound – meaning it could be used in office blocks for workers to let off steam after particularly stressful meetings.

Another idea would be to use the

booth as part of a mental healththemed art exhibition.

Screams inside the Time Booth – which has a sound recorder - may form part of the exhibition, being smoothed out and played simultaneously in one go.

Whatever the plans for the unusual box, it seemed to have been popular with the crowd outside the Tate on Saturday afternoon.

Despite attracting some unusual looks, those who tried it while the News was there overwhelmingly seemed to enjoy it. “I feel so much better, I really needed that!” laughed one woman.

170-mile walk then 900 for lunch

A WELL-KNOWN community activist has invited all 900 of her neighbours for lunch, before setting off a 170-mile walk around England in a bid to highlight community projects up-and-down the country.

Carole Wright, 52, of Peabody Square, Blackfriars, set off on the long journey from her estate on May 14 for two weeks, where she will end up on June 2 to host a meal for her neighbours.

Explaining the trip, Carole said: “We’re going to seventeen towns in seventeen days, so we’re hoping that the walk will encourage others to do their own ‘Big Lunch’.

“It’s just a way for people to meet other people that they never would.”

The initiative, an idea from the Eden Project, encourages people to get to know their neighbours by hosting a lunch on the first weekend of June.

“I hadn’t realised how lonely I was

and how disconnected I felt from the people and places around me,” said Laura, speaking of the time prior to organising her first Big Lunch.

“It was amazing what we achieved over a quick chat and a jam sandwich. Suddenly people were talking about cleaning up the area where we live.”

The pair were helped in delivering the invitations by fan-favourite of the Great British Bake Off, Manon Lagreve. Manon will herself be attending a Big Lunch in north London, she told the News.

However, she added, she doesn’t fear bringing her bakes to the Big Lunches she attends – as nobody could be as fierce a critic as the show’s co-judge, Paul Hollywood.

Peter Stewart, the executive director of the Eden Project, said: “Our amazing walkers are heading out to connect with people at the heart of the UK’s communities and invite everyone to take a simple step to come together for a Big Lunch.

“We know there is appetite to close the distance and get to know each other better.”

Start a new business at your local library

A PIONEERING British Library project to turn libraries into onestop shops for entrepreneurship has been launched in the borough.

The three-year ‘Start Ups in London libraries’ scheme, running at Canada Water, Peckham and East Street libraries, will see hubs of business support, including free workshops, information and one-to-one support for budding entrepreneurs to building their own company.

Explaining the scheme at the launch event in Canada Water library on May 16, Cllr Kieron Williams, who holds

the jobs, skills and innovation said: “This scheme will mean you can walk into any three of our libraries and get immediate one-to-one support for setting up your own business. I really look forward to seeing how this helps people on their business journey,” he said.

Previous success stories born out of the British Library’s entrepreneurship efforts include the wildly popular Ella’s Kitchen brand of organic baby food products, and Tangle Teezer, a de-tangling hairbrush sold in over seventy countries.

“I hope that I will come back three years from now and some of you here will be part of our success story,” added Uto Patrick, the project

manager for the scheme at the British Library.

Around one hundred people at the launch event also heard from Emma Snow, who runs a market stall in Bermondsey’s Blue, and Dean Williams, who will act as Southwark’s ‘SME champion’.

To be eligible for the ‘Start Ups in London Libraries’ programme you need to be either the owner of a business which has not been trading or been registered at Companies House, or be an aspiring entrepreneur with an idea you want to develop.

PECKHAM WAS brought to a standstill on Saturday as hundreds of music fans descended on Rye Lane for a surprise gig - but left disappointed after it was cancelled over safety fears.

On Saturday, American rapper Tyler, the Creator, announced to his twitter followers he would be holding a surprise gig in London and would soon share the time and location.

After confirming he would be performing at 3pm at Peckham’s Copeland Park, fans raced to Rye Lane in the hope of seeing his first UK performance in four years, coinciding with the release of his latest album, IGOR. In 2015, the artist had been banned from entering the UK by then-home secretary Theresa May, over claims of ‘homophobic and violent’ lyrics.

Footage posted on social media showed a huge crowd gathering at Rye Lane, including what looked like a stampede as

people tried to run into the Bussey Building, as police announced the gig had been cancelled at the last minute by the venue due to overcrowding fears.

Officers confirmed there had been no reported crimes, injuries or arrests but police were in the area helping the crowd to 'disperse safely'.

Posting to his followers that evening, the musician seemed delighted with the response and vowed to perform in London one day: “Man London kids was blasting IGOR in the streets and stores and a f****** train station, y’all crazy I

love it, feels like the early days before weirdos were due happy.

“Sucks it was too wild (out of excitement) but I am coming back trust me.” [sic].

ATHENLAY FOOTBALL club is celebrating its 40th anniversary next month at its Dulwich home.

The children's football club, from ages five to eighteen, is holding its annual presentation day and fundraiser on June 8 at its Homestall Road grounds.

This year's event is extra-special, as it coincides with the club entering its fifth decade.

The volunteer-run club is still going

from strength to strength, recently expanding its young coaches scheme and getting more girls playing.

Founded in 1979, the club has helped build the skills and confidence of generations of youngsters from Nunhead, Peckham and surrounding areas at Homestall Road playing fields in Dulwich.

Today it has seventeen teams, around 400 members, holds over 50s 'walking football' and has a womenonly training group.

Starting at midday, the day will include player and team presentations, games including tug-o-

war and a 'top bin' football challenge, and a fundraising raffle.

Prizes up for grabs include signed Sir Geoff Hurst photographs and a signed Rio Ferdinand Manchester United shirt.

Food and drink will be on offer until 4pm including a vegetarian stall, cakes and a pimms bar. Team and player presentations and awards will start at 2p.m.

Athenlay FC’s 40th anniversary party will be held on Saturday, June 8, at Homestall Road from midday.

The project aims to help year six pupils get ready to join secondary school by using music, dance, drama and art to help them learn new skills, take risks, make friends and cope with change.

RESIDENTS FORCED TO MOVE OVER CLADDING WANT A BETTER DEAL

FAMILIES WHO found out they had been living in fire trap homes in Elephant and Castle for nearly a decade have been left devastated by news they will have to move out while cladding is removed – and still pay rent.

Tenants and leaseholders from 28 Arch Street in Elephant and Castle told the News on Monday they had clubbed together and refused offers of hotel or hostel stays until they know for sure they will be able to move back into their homes permanently, once the cladding is removed.

Three weeks ago they received a letter from L&Q explaining that, although the building’s cladding is not the same as that used in Grenfell Tower, it still needed to be ripped out, in order to comply with the government’s new fire safety regulations in the aftermath of the disaster.

Families living in Arch Street have been told to expect work to take around eighteen months – but as yet a start date has not been confirmed.

They are also expected to continue to pay rent while be rehoused at L&Qs expense elsewhere – and possibly service charge.

Ruth Reyes, who has lived in her property for nearly a decade, told the News that after the Grenfell Tower disaster she and other residents received a letter reassuring them their homes were safe and nothing else until three weeks ago, when they were all told they needed to move out.

now in place, and some internal cladding has already been ripped out, despite the fact parts of the building appear to be in the middle of a new paint job.

Ruth told the News the stress and worry was taking its toll: “We have spent money on our homes, our kitchens, furniture, and now have no idea what will happen to them.

“At a meeting with L&Q their representative told us ‘I understand what it is like to be homeless’ - as if that would make me feel better!

“Am I homeless?

“As families with children, we just need to know where we are going to be living and when. I don’t even know where to get my post sent now.”

Another resident, Adam Tabed, said he was worried about parents who help others with childcare losing support networks if they are all moved to different areas.

He said he regularly checks on a disabled neighbour and fears other vulnerable people could be isolated by the moves.

The residents have been told by L&Q new homes built at Elephant Park and nearby by the housing association will not be ready in time, and there are – as yet – no confirmed plans what offers for temporary housing will be made available.

Maria Baffe has two children, aged eight and six, at nearby Ark Globe.

She said: “I don’t want to change my children’s school and I can’t imagine living with my children in a hotel or hostel for nearly two years.”

Ruth and the residents believe they are entitled to compensation from L&Q for living in a dangerous block for all these years, and the stress of being forced to move.

It is a particularly bitter blow for those who first came to Arch Street from temporary council accommodation elsewhere.

One of them, a mother called Isatu Jalloh, said she had been delighted with the building after arriving from temporary housing in Bermondsey.

But now, finding out the block has unsafe cladding on top of a history of heating problems and leaks, has left her vowing to fight for safe homes and a better offer from L&Q.

Showing the News the boarded up disabled lift, parts of cladding removed from inside, but fresh paintwork elsewhere, she said the stress was a huge burden to bear.

“We are going to fight it, there is no beating around the bush.

“We are not going anywhere until we are all offered homes nearby and have an agreement from L&Q when we can come back.

“We deserve compensation for this.

Why should we pay rent on a home we can’t even use?

“Service charge for a service we aren’t getting?

“We never expected this, it came out of nowhere, and then we found out they have put our lives at risk for nine years.”

An L&Q spokesperson said: “We understand that the need to move is causing uncertainty for residents and we are doing everything we can to make the process as smooth as possible.

“We have recently written to all residents to explain their options and have met with most to discuss their individual circumstances.

“We continue to explore all possible solutions that meet the individual needs of residents, including any L&Q properties available locally which have not already been committed to meet other priority housing needs.

“Residents have a legal right to return to their properties when the work is completed and we will be happy to confirm this in writing.”

Tragic fall of ‘free-loving spirit’ Ryan

THE MOTHER of a 20-year-old man who tragically fell to his death paid a heart-breaking tribute to her son as a ‘beautiful free-loving spirit’.

Speaking to the News from the family home on Bermondsey’s Manor Estate, Pam O’Donnell spoke of her only child as an adventurous young man who loved climbing and cared deeply for everyone around him.

Friends and family believe that the keen climber may have been attempting to jump for a nearby tree in the moments prior to his untimely death; falling from flats at nearby Marden Square, Bermondsey, in the early hours of a Friday morning two weeks ago.

Signs of popular Ryan O’Donnell are in abundance in the home where he had lived since he was three with Pam and fourteen-year-old Staffie, Tigger, whom he called his ‘brother’.

There are roller-skates propped up against the wall in the hallway – rollerskating was one of his many hobbies – and a row of photos on display in the

living room.

One shows him as a new-born in Pam’s arms and another as an innocent, grinning school pupil at nearby Galleywall Primary and later at City of London Academy.

Being a climber, and having taken magic mushrooms for the first time appears to have been the tragic fatal combination.

“I won’t take away the beautiful person he was, because he was. He just loved everyone so much,” says devoted Pam. “He was too nice to be in this world.

He had such a pure heart.

“But I want everyone to know because – it’s not a bad thing, he was only trying to get a different experience, but the fact is that it’s just as dangerous as any other Class A drug.

“He did take that and he must’ve thought he could jump off a building and do what he could do. But he couldn’t, because it killed him.”

Ryan’s body lay underneath a forensic tent for most of Friday morning, May 10, on Drummond Road, as police tried to establish the cause of death.

But for his loving mum Pam the horrendous news was made all the worse

as she says that it wasn’t until 10.15pm the following night she was told by local police officers, who came and found her seventy miles away in Portsmouth.

“They couldn’t tell me how he died,” she said.

“All they could say was ‘Sorry to tell you your son’s dead’. “‘Oh my God’ I said, ‘how? Was he killed or run over, what happened?’

“I kept on repeating ‘what happened?

What happened?’

“They said they didn’t know, we have just been told to come and tell you that he’s dead.

“What a horrible way to be told. I didn’t know if someone stabbed him, if he had an accident, I just didn’t know.

“It wasn’t the police officers’ fault, it was two young girls. I said: ‘I’m so sorry you’ve got and come and tell me this news.’

Through tears Pam added: “I’m devastated because he absolutely adored me. “How lucky is that?

After he was born she got a tattoo of a cat on her right arm – “Ryan absolutely adored animals”, she says – with his name and birthday, 20.1.1999, underneath.

“He had always been something special, even when growing up,” Pam tells the News.

“He wasn’t your run-of-the-mill kid, he was a bit different,” she says.

“He went to Judo, circus club, used to make little men and paint them, like little warriors, he liked all of those.”

“Once he even borrowed a pair of leggings from a family friend because he liked the bright colours,” says Pam,

smiling.

He would play football, basketball, climb and cycle for hours on the Manor Estate playground, where Pam would keep an eye out from their flat balcony.

“I was able to watch out for him, make sure he was alright. I’m a worrier, but all the time he used to tell me ‘don’t worry, mum, don’t worry,’” she says.

In turn, he would look out for other kids on the estate, too. “He wouldn’t let any other kids get bullied. He’d be there, he’d step in and help them out,” Pam adds.

“He grew up to be such a beautiful person.”

She said there are millions of fond memories, far too many to list.

One time Pam remembers when he was aged about fourteen, he somehow managed to bring home a big park bench, sodden with rain. “‘Mum, it’s beautiful,’ he said. ‘We can use it, we can do all these great things [with it]’. I made him get rid of it eventually”, she laughs.

But other collections Pam let him keep – stones, crystals and “lots of little things.” He was a Buddhist, deeply spiritual, creative and a vegan.

“He had a little sparkle. Everyone that met him loved him,” says Pam. “If he saw an underdog, he was there for them. He hated other people’s negativity.”

The talented musician had been working part-time in a cloakroom at Oval Space, a club, while studying Music Production at Morley College in Lambeth prior to passing away.

He loved music of all kinds, especially rap, knowing every single Eminem song off-by-heart.

“He was a very special person. He really wanted to make a change, a difference.

“He just really, really wanted to help.”

He was a free soul from the very beginning, Maurizio added.

Girlfriend Eevee also paid a moving tribute to Ryan, whom she first met at a forest party. “I didn’t know him, I’d never met him,” she told the News.

“He said he noticed me the most, because I was just lying next to the fire and I wasn’t

When Ryan last visited Pam six weeks ago, he brought with him three gifts, she says.

The first was a miniature goat figurine, because he said ‘Mum you just go on about goats all the time,’ Pam smiles.

The second was a stone, painted by his girlfriend of seven months, Eevee.

And the third, a little Buddha, to watch over and protect her. “He said, ‘I want you to have these things,’” Pam says.

“I’ve kept them, and I’ve got them all.”

“We are very sad to hear of the death of Ryan O’Donnell who was a student here at Morley College London on our Music Production Diploma course,” added Peter Collyer, Head of Music, on behalf of the popular student’s peers.

“Ryan will be remembered as a kind and funny student who was popular with his classmates and he will be greatly missed.

“All our thoughts are with Ryan’s friends and family at this sad time.”

With so many failed votes in parliament to the EU elections actually taking place in the UK, it is difficult to know where we stand.

Much of what is talked about is what will happen post-Brexit. What will it mean for our household incomes if we have a ‘bad Brexit’?

What will happen to the price of our food if we leave with no deal? We have all been asking these questions with very little reassurance or answers from Government.

However it is not just a post-brexit we are worried about. The state of unknown that we are currently in and may be in for much of the year at least, is taking its toll. The

Large capital projects such as the crucial Bakerloo line extension rely upon funding that should be projected within the three-year review spending. However, because of the Brexit uncertainty, the chancellor, Philip Hammond, had said that if they are not able to find a solution to Brexit then this would throw into question the three-year

spending review and potentially result in only a one-year review.

This uncertainty means that there is currently no Government capital funding beyond 2020/21 for certain.

Without knowing how much funding will be given for just the next three years then this creates a huge problem in knowing what projects will be able to proceed.

Our ability to commit funding and

plan for improvements across London’s rail infrastructure is in question.

I have asked the Mayor to push the government on this and to commit to these capital projects. I will continue to do the same.

A bridge too far!

TFL OFFICIALS gave an update about the status of the Rotherhithe Bridge, which will link the peninsula and Canary Wharf, at a meeting this week.

“Our Rotherhithe councillors have campaigned years for this bridge and both TfL and Southwark have dragged their heels,” claimed the Bermondsey Liberal Democrats, in response to the news.

Cllr Richard Livingstone (Lab) was not taking this lying down, accusing the Liberal Democrats of overreach.

“Literally rubbish,” he said. “The councillors for Rotherhithe ward are Southwark Labour, not the Liberal Democrats.”

“How embarrassing for the Bermondsey Liberal Democrats that they don’t even know which wards they have councillors in,” added Labour’s Stephanie Cryan, who represents Rotherhithe ward.

But, responded the Southwark Lib Dems who are the opposition on the council, “there is a difference

between Rotherhithe the area and Rotherhithe ward.

“The proposed bridge isn't in Rotherhithe ward; does that mean you think it isn't in Rotherhithe?”

eil Coyle, Helen Hayes and Harriet Harman have written numerous columns in this paper saying Brexit is a huge threat to our country’s wealth, health and prosperity

In this week’s News, Hayes outlined the party’s position most clearly.

Labour, as Southwark Council leader Peter John has said before, sees Brexit as a distraction from the bigger issues of austerity. If we could just have a general election and watch the Tories implode with in-fighting, a Labour government could get to work fixing our social ills.

But frankly this isn’t good enough.

The idea that voting for Labour MEPs is not a ‘single-issue vote’ on Brexit, but rather would ensure Labour values are represented in Europe, is laughable. If we leave Europe we’ll have no representation in its parliament, but this is the kind of double-think the party is increasingly employing as it tries to keep Remainers and Leavers happy and not collapse in the polls.

Whatever your view on the EU, the strongest parties have an agreed policy and do not deviate from their key message – whether in favour or against Brexit. The responses from Coyle, Hayes and our council leader, Peter John - and the lack of a substantive one from Harman - are all tellingly different and point to Labour’s internal disarray.

Labour is against ‘Tory Brexit’ – but does that mean for a softer Brexit?

Labour has stopped Brexit by pushing for an extension – but doesn’t want a second referendum unless they can get in power.

Labour has many Remain MPs – but they’re seemingly at odds with its leadership.

Labour wants a confirmatory vote – but what is the best outcome? Brexit or not?

Hayes is right that the Liberal Democrats and Green Party are not, despite the PR, wholly populated by ardent Remainers.

Publicly endorsing another party would be career suicide for an MP. This week, Lord Heseltine was chastised by the Tories for encouraging Remainers to vote Lib Dem. Margaret Hodge was also criticised by Labour for saying pro-EU Labour members should back other parties. And who knows which direction the Tories could go in with a new leader.

Whether they like it or not, today’s vote will send a key message on Brexit to the main parties. If there ever was a time to break ranks and vote with your conscience, that time is now.

GUY'S AND St Thomas' is looking for women suffering from extreme morning sickness to join the world's largest study into the condition.

Hyperemesis gravidarum is an extreme type of pregnancy sickness where women repeatedly vomit throughout the day and are often unable to hold down any food or drink.

The condition can have serious complications, leading to weight loss, dehydration and malnutrition that can affect both the mother and baby's health.

Current treatments include antisickness drugs, vitamins and steroids.

In recent years public awareness of the condition has been raised after the Duchess of Cambridge suffered from it during her three pregnancies.

Although around seven in ten women experience some nausea or sickness while pregnant, it is unknown how many will suffer from this extreme form

THE FIRST ever babies in the UK to receive keyhole surgery in the womb for spina bifida have been operated on at King's College Hospital - including a baby whose mother's life had been saved at the same hospital nearly thirty years ago.

Babies with spina bifida are left with a hole in the back and their spinal cord exposed after the spine does not develop properly during pregnancy.

The condition damages their spinal cord and can cause weakness or total paralysis, as well as urine and bowel problems, and can also develop brain damage from excess fluid on the brain.

Until now, surgical options for treating babies with spina bifida had involved either waiting for surgery until after birth, or invasive surgery while pregnant involving opening the abdomen and uterus, and then repairing the baby's damaged spine.

The new specialist keyhole surgery, called fetoscopic surgery involves a team of medics using ultrasound, a series of tiny incisions and a long camera to push the cord back into the spinal canal before patching it up to prevent leaking, all without having to open up the abdomen.

Sherrie Sharp, 28, from Horsham in West Sussex, gave birth to her son Jaxson Nicholas Leonard James Sharp on Easter Sunday.

She found out her baby had spina bifida following her 20-week scan at another hospital.

KING’S COLLEGE Hospital says the bedbug infestation on its maternity unit is under control.

As the News reported last week, staff have been forced to wear protective clothing and give advice to new mothers after the outbreak.

Bedbugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of and need specialist treatment, especially as they have developed an immunity to some chemicals which no longer kill them off.

This week, a spokesperson for the hospital trust said: “We have been carefully monitoring and treating the affected area.

“Although there has not been any evidence of bedbugs for several weeks, we continue to treat the area as a precautionary measure.

“This is line with NHS guidance.”

TWO 'VIOLENT and callous' men from Southwark have been jailed after burgling a Peckham family home at knifepoint when one of the gang rang on the doorbell pretending to be a delivery driver.

Jordan Edwards, aged 26, from Hillbeck Close in Peckham and 25-yearold Blake Talbot from Longfield Estate in Bermondsey, were sentenced on Thursday, May 16 along with George Owherho, aged 27, from Lambeth's Palace Road, Waterloo.

All three were found guilty of aggravated burglary following a twoweek trial.

Edwards was jailed for 12 years and eight months, Talbot was handed elevenand-a-half years, and Owherho was given twelve years. Edwards was also found guilty of assaulting an emergency worker during his arrest.

Another man, Dharnell Depeazer, aged 20, from Mayville Road in Waltham Forest, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing and was sentenced to seven-anda-half years.

Southwark Crown Court heard the burglary took place on October 9, 2018, when Depeazer knocked on a door in Peckham, claiming to be a delivery driver and carrying a parcel.

Jurors were told that when the door opened, he forced his way in, followed by his three associates who then threatened the family, including a sixteen-year-old, with knives as they made them hand over cash, cheques, jewellery and a mobile phone.

JAILED FOR ‘VIOLENT ATTACK ON PECKHAM FAMILY’

During the ordeal, a 46-year-old woman was dragged across the floor while another victim was placed in a headlock, the court heard.

Workmen who were nearby heard the family's screams and called police, who arrived as the four suspects attempted a getaway.

Two - Owhereho and Edwards - were arrested at the scene and taken into custody. Talbot was arrested after his DNA matched clothing found at the scene. He was arrested on November 21, 2018. Police arrested Depeazer on

A MAN sprayed in the face with a mystery substance in Camberwell was hospitalised last week, as police appeal for witnesses and footage while the suspect is still at large.

Officers were called at approximately 13:10hrs on Friday, 17 May to reports of a man assaulted during an altercation with another man in Warner Road, SE5.

A BUS driver is believed to have been slashed on his left arm during an assault in Herne Hill last Friday.

Emergency services were called to the corner of Dulwich Road with Hurst Street where the number 3 bus was pulled up at the kerbside.

Police say they were responding to reports received at 3pm of the driver being assaulted.

Officers and paramedics found him suffering from a slash injury to his left arm and he was taken to hospital.

His injuries are said to be neither life-threatening nor life-changing.

A Met spokesperson said that although the investigation is in its early stages, it is 'not believed that the injury was caused by a knife or any other weapon'.

Woman rescued from underneath a lorry PECKHAM

EMERGENCY SERVICES rescued a woman from underneath a lorry following a collision in Peckham last Thursday.

Firefighters and medics rushed to help the pedestrian - who had been involved in a collision with a lorry on

Rye Lane, at the junction of Peckham High Street - shortly before 11am.

A London Fire Brigade Service spokesman said they were called to reports of a large goods vehicle having been “in collision” with a female pedestrian.

“A woman was removed from under the vehicle and taken to hospital by the ambulance service,” he said.

She was treated at the scene by two

medics and ambulance crew, before being taken to hospital.

“We were called at 10:51 am today to Rye Lane, to reports of an incident,” a representative of the ambulance service told the News on the day.

“We sent two medics in response cars and an ambulance crew. We treated a person at the scene and took them to hospital.”

Fire-fighters stood down the incident

at 11.20am, having been called to the scene 25 minutes earlier.

The woman’s condition is not currently known.

The area surrounding the junction of Peckham High Street with Rye Lane was closed while the emergency services tended to the woman.

Motorists were advised to expect delays and seek alternative routes by the transport authorities.

POPULAR TRADITIONAL pie and mash shop, Manze’s, will have a new generation minding the business as two of the businesses’ stalwarts have retired.

The family-run business, established in 1902, has been handed down through the generations, with Rick, the founder’s grandson, being involved with the shop for forty years.

Now, after his two brothers have retired, his daughter Emma and her husband Tom are joining the traditional outlet, which has two shops in the borough.

“I’ve worked with my two brothers all my life but now they are retiring I’m pleased that the family dynasty will carry on with my daughter and eventually grandchildren,” said Rick.

“It’s both a sad and happy time for me with my two older brothers retiring and my daughter and son-in-law taking over their part of the business.”

Emma and Tom are going to bring “fresh eyes and enthusiasm” to the business, while still staying true to the successful recipe that has served the business well since the 1900s.

Among the proposed changes are a local delivery service through Deliveroo – and expanding their overnight delivery service so anyone in the country can buy Manze’s Pie and Mash.

Baroness Jowell, who died last May from brain cancer, was MP for Dulwich and West Norwood from 1992 until 2015.

The plaque was unveiled by London Mayor Sadiq Khan with members of her family. It is inscribed with the words: “The Right Hon. Tessa Jowell DBE made a decisive contribution to securing and delivering the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“This plaque was erected to recognise Tessa’s efforts, her success in relation to the Games and to celebrate her life and achievements.”

VAGINAL MESH is no longer used at King’s and Guy’s for prolapse and incontinence, the trusts have confirmed, as campaigners push for a full ban on the procedure.

Used to treat incontinence or prolapse, often caused by childbirth, vaginal mesh implants have been shown to be responsible for a series of cases where women were left with extreme, chronic pain.

After the sheer number of women affected and the severity of their symptoms came to light, a ban on the products was put in place last year.

Last month, new NICE guidelines were published, advising mesh is only used after all non-surgical options have been exhausted, and to women who understand the risks.

A campaign group with more than 7,000 members, called Sling the Mesh, says its representatives have written to every NHT trust warning them that hospitals continue to use mesh could face legal action.

The group hoped the guidelines would take a much stronger stance and put a permanent stop on the procedure. It has also called on the government to set up a register of every woman operated on in the last 20 years.

In response to a request by the News, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust confirmed it was not using mesh in certain cases but had not put an outright ban in place.

Although both Southwark’s hospitals continue to provide mesh removal, last Thursday Sling the Mesh staged a demonstration outside University College Hospital in protest of the trust’s announcement it was suspending its mesh removal service.

ummer Street is an Aussie soap opera musical written and directed by Andrew Norris, and, on this occasion, performed in a railway arch a million miles from the sunny down under climate we are used to seeing in that TV genre, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor.

Andrew, has taken that period throughout the 90s when TV was saturated with naively optimistic Australian soaps starring families that even had a serial killer been at large - as long as the sun shone, the sea shimmered, and beautiful tanned bodies strutted about, a dead corpse was no

reason to cancel the barbie. Now, with the passage of time, aged cast members find themselves in 2003, still auditioning for innocuous story lines.

That scenario provides opportunity for numerous comedic clichés which the players give their all to fulfil but, sadly, the parody leaves a deafening silence that is bewildering and uncomfortable.

Pogo, the stuffed dog, a nod to Skippy the kangaroo’s ability to communicate better than a polyglot was a good call.

However, with time comedy transforms, the once funny becomes tinny, resulting in the cast desperately attempting to inject humour into situations as hollow as egg shells.

Aussie TV soaps had innocent story lines that contrastied with our lived experience of reality, and alongside our cynicism their unselfconsciousness proved funny. Rehashing their childlike quality in Summer Street loses the point.

We laughed spontaneously at the originals due to the absurdity - an ironic happy by-product that provided extra entertainment for viewers. Attempting to squeeze mileage out of that initial reaction is a big task, resulting in comedy that feels disingenuous and forced onto the audience.

However, all those involved strove to do it justice, springing into action throughout the second half, resulting in

Orpheus descends into southern gothic

Not to see Streetcar Named Desire, The Glass Menagerie or even Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. No, it’s the lesserknown Orpheus Descending, presented as a co-production with Theatr Clwyd, which is to supply my evening’s fix of southern drama.

The play itself has not always been too well received. It struggled in its initial Broadway run and even a film adaptation with Marlon Brando couldn’t elevate the piece into the hearts and minds of audiences both here and in the USA. It is in itself an adaptation from an earlier work of Williams’ called Battle of Angels.

as tensions rise. His free spirit is the antithesis of his environment. His relationship with Lady Torrence evolves and he is soon told to leave.

The performances of Seth Numrich as Valentine and Hattie Morahan as Lady Torrence were the highlights.

Their character growth and transformation were the driving force of the whole production. The play’s themes of conformity, racism, sexual frustration and small town syndrome are all classics of Southern Gothic dramas. But there is a reason why this is not a Tennessee Williams classic and I think in part it is due to the narrative at times being awkward and clunky. It also suffers from being one paced.

As a depiction of Southern life in small towns Tamara Harvey’s production certainly ticks the boxes with strong performances from quite a large cast. I just feel Orpheus Descending is a bit unrefined and if you’re looking for something that reflects or comments on today’s society, this probably isn’t the piece for you.

Mythology around the issue of AIDS is dispelled with frank depictions showing us where and how the dead contracted the virus. Everything from chance encounters, a desperate addict, the prostitute, returning soldiers, within marriages, outside of marriages, onenight stands, a blood transfusion, the promiscuous and the faithful make up the tapestry of remembrance.

Deliberate, purposeful dramatisation is achieved by a predominately young cast of sixteen, their numbers driving home the extent of the AIDS issue. Slick, polished skits of thumping night clubs, hospital wards or street life show audiences that where there is life there is a history. Ominous as that sounds, Elegies unapologetically celebrates the lives of the victims, giving voice to their experiences, motivating us to take this issue seriously.

Creative use of special effects lend this production an edgy, sharp vibe allowing actors to create impressive outcomes.

Voices are dynamic, after all the point is to resurrect victims, giving them the opportunity to be heard and celebrated.

Dressed in heavenly shades of blue and white, on a simple white stage, cast members stand united, supporting each other’s experience.

Gutsy, sassy attitudes and expressive voices prevent the dead being relegated to statistics. From extroverts basking in limelight to introverts hiding in the wings, cast members ensure audiences recognise AIDS does not discriminate.

Winning over audiences with serious subject matter is no easy feat, but the scale of talent possessed by cast members and musicians ensures audiences are entertained. Song lyrics,

Defiantly entertaining and worth seeing.

From Guyana to the Elephant & Castle: Frank Bowling retrospective

TATE BRITAIN will present the first major retrospective of work by Elephant & Castle resident Frank Bowling.

Since the early 1960s Bowling has explored and expanded the possibilities of paint, influencing generations of artists through his spectacular kaleidoscopic paintings. This long overdue celebration of his work will be the first exhibition to span the full breadth of Bowling’s practice, bringing together rarely seen works and iconic series that highlight the quality and range of the artist’s remarkable six-decade career.

Tate Britain will chart Frank Bowling’s rise to becoming one of Britain’s most visionary painters. Born in Guyana (then British Guiana) and part of the Windrush generation, Bowling moved to London in 1953. While serving in the RAF he met Keith Critchlow, who introduced him to the London art scene. He went on to study at the Royal College of Art alongside David Hockney and R.B Kitaj and became the first Black artist nominated as a Royal Academician.

Living and working between London and New York, he has continuously reinvented painting fuelled by a knowledge of European tradition and post-war abstraction, and infuses his works with deeply personal narrative.

For the first time, early figurative work including Cover Girl 1966, not shown in

the UK since it was painted, will be exhibited alongside groundbreaking series from the 1970s and 80s and new works created over the past decade, in testament to Bowling's ongoing innovation.

The artist moved to New York in the mid-1960s to immerse himself in the city’s diverse cultural landscape and became an important critical voice, writing seminal articles about Black art at the height of the Civil Rights movement. Ten of Bowling’s celebrated ‘Map Paintings’ created during this period will be brought together at Tate Britain, including Who's Afraid of Barney Newman 1968 and Polish Rebecca 1971. Up to seven metres long, these paintings comprise fields of colour overlaid with stenciled maps of the world, often re-orientated so that Latin America and Africa dominate the vast canvases. These ambitious and timely works examine a sense of place, displacement and identity in the wake of major geopolitical changes that characterised the dissolution of the European colonial empires. Another room of the exhibition will be dedicated to the breathtaking ‘Poured Paintings’, for which Bowling created an energetic and innovative painting style, pouring acrylic paint from heights of up to two metres to form cascades of colour reminiscent of waterfalls or lava flow.

The persistent need to reinvent painting later fuelled the development of a highly sculptural approach, introducing threedimensional objects, multiple canvases, metallic pigments, chalk and gels to create densely textured surfaces and loosely geometric structures. Bowling at times applies this tactile process to hint at topographical forms, as in the remarkable Great Thames paintings which evoke undulating riverbeds and the play of sunlight on water. Produced in a studio near the banks of the river they are among his most lyrical works and reflect an admiration for British landscape painters such as Turner and Constable.

Further highlights will include poignantly autobiographical works such as a selection of canvases from the 1960s that bridge pop and colour field painting and feature stenciled images of Bowling’s childhood home. Tate Britain will also show Sacha Jason Guyana Dreams 1989, a vibrant composition inspired by the artist’s first visit to Guyana with his son Sacha. The exhibition will end with a section dedicated to paintings made over the last decade, an explosive period of productivity and experimentation.

Historian Stephen Bourne examines the life of Ira Aldridge, the celebrated Shakespearean actor of the Victorian era

ra Aldridge was one of the most celebrated actors of the Victorian era. A distinguished African American tragedian, Ira had made his first London stage appearance in 1825 at the Royal Coburg Theatre, now known as the Old Vic, in Waterloo Road.

He also appeared as Shakespeare’s Othello at the Surrey Theatre in 1833.

The Surrey Theatre was situated at the opening of Blackfriars Road at St George’s Circus near the Elephant and Castle. In the Victorian era, from the 1830s to the 1860s, Ira was one of Britain’s most popular and respected stage actors.

His acting career spanned an awesome four decades. Born in New York City in 1807, Aldridge was not able to find work as an actor in America. Instead he travelled to Liverpool as a ship’s steward and made his first stage appearance in Britain in 1825. However, a number of racist newspaper reports made it impossible for him to continue his acting career in London, so he worked a great deal in the provinces.

Aldridge returned to London in 1833 to play Shakespeare’s Othello at the Theatre Royal in Covent Garden and afterwards he accepted an offer for an engagement at the Surrey Theatre. This was situated at the opening of Blackfriars Road at St George’s Circus. The Oblelisk, a famous landmark, had been erected at St George’s Circus in 1771.

The Surrey Theatre became the most famous and longest-surviving theatres of the many 19th century theatres and music halls in Southwark. It was demolished in 1934 to make way for an extension of the Royal Eye Hospital.

More recently this has been demolished to make way for a student hostel.

Aldridge made his first appearance at the Surrey Theatre as Othello on 22 April 1833. A Surrey Theatre playbill from May 1833 has survived and advertises Aldridge in a selection of scenes from the following plays: The Revenge, The Merchant of Venice (as Shylock), The Padlock and The Castle Spectre.

Aldridge returned to the Surrey Theatre in 1848 for a second engagement, but this time the London theatre critics were kinder to him. For example, The Times newspaper acclaimed his performance as Othello as ‘finely conceived and executed with great dramatic effect.’

On his visits to Russia in 1858 and 1862 he gave less theatrical and more naturalistic ating performances, especially in the plays of Shakespeare.

One Russian critic commented that, after seeing Aldridge as Othello, it was impossible to see a white actor in blackface in the role.

Aldridge returned to London in triumph but in his homeland, an estimated three million African Americans were enslaved until the end of the Civil War in 1865.

In England the Anti-Slavery Society referred to Aldridge’s majestic

appearances on stage as significant contributions to the struggle for the abolition of slavery. With his wealth, Aldridge contributed to many fundraising campaigns to end slavery in America.

In 1863 he was granted British citizenship and two years later he played Othello again in an acclaimed production at London’s Haymarket Theatre. He died, while on tour, in the

Polish town of Lodz on August 7, 1867, aged sixty.

His daughter Amanda, born in Penge, south east London, in 1866, was proud of her father’s achievements even though she never knew him. By the 1920s she had become a highly respected voice teacher in London.

She coached the young African American actor Paul Robeson when he was cast as Othello at the Savoy Theatre

in 1930. As a good luck gesture, Amanda presented Robeson with her father’s earrings which he wore when playing Othello in London in the Victorian era.

Robeson wore them for his performance as Othello at the Savoy.

In 2004, Ira Aldridge was honoured at the Old Vic Theatre with the unveiling of a print of him as Aaron in Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus - donated by the National Portrait Gallery.

The battle comes with trying to find the place in the warren of food and drink outlets that make up Mercato Metropolitano, and the search was hardly aided by the fact that it has no Bottles ’n’ Battles sign to guide the thirsty traveller in. I walked past it four times before calling Security for assistance, writes Michael Holland.

After that gloomy start, myself and Doreen from the Co-op found ourselves in the windowless surroundings of what is more shanty town off licence than wine bar. A menu listed the few things that could be conjured up in the tiny kitchen out the front of the shack, and our server Chiara brought a rather tasteless Prosecco that she explained was fermented in the bottle with only yeast for flavour. ‘It tastes just like the hooch we used to make on C Wing’ exclaimed Doreen. I know she has an interesting past, nevertheless, being a jailbird was still a surprise for me. And with that information the sparkling wine took on a whole new life and meaning. We could now really savour and enjoy its qualities.

Like the have-a-go hero she is, Doreen ordered Taralli as a starter.

What’s taralli?’ I asked. ‘Dunno, but we’ll soon find out’. It was actually something akin to breadsticks, but much drier and in the shape of something a dog leaves curled up in the street. Fortunately I had Ham Crocchette, golf ball size spheres of crispy and gooey loveliness that we shared, and which went beautifully with the Rosé aperitif that absolutely sang of summer and strawberries and was oh so good.

Behind us a group of Japanese tourists were getting a tour of the wine racks. I, more interestingly, was getting a rundown on a legendary Bank Holiday weekend when Doreen got barred from three South London pubs! I’ve never seen her look so happy as she recounted her drink-sodden story.

Chiara came with a wonderful Reisling, quite sweet but this did not detract from its flavour in any way.

And the wine knowledge that she imparted created something almost theatrical to the tasting. How could you not like something that has been so excellently introduced?

For the main course I had Pappardelle with Lamb Ragu. It was pretty normal Italian fare and did its job. My dining

companion had the Aubergine Parmigiana, a robust chunk of Paradise that had a real cheese kick to it that created the ideal balance with the vegetables. This was paired with Mallibran Sottoriva, another good white wine with a great back story told

by Chiara.

The evening ended with a nice red and a debauched tale of Doreen dancing round a pole, whilst singing sectarian songs, as a ceilidh band tried to perform. Perfect.

Despite Bottles ’n’ Battles being like one of those potting sheds that men turn into mini pubs and invite their mates round, there are some good wines to enjoy.

Our Dulwich Hamlet reporter, Ben Henderson, attended the club’s recent awards night and caught up with the president and player of the season for their reflections on the season and how Gavin Rose’s side can improve in 2019-20.

It was an entertaining affair as always at the stadium’s bar. These events provide an eye-opening opportunity to view the players as they truly are, rather than as we see them on the pitch.

However, unless Anthony Cook was doing his best ‘tw*t in the hat’ impression, it would seem that he at least should stick to the club stash.

The awards ceremony began with man of the match awards that had not been handed out during the season. Aryan Tajbakhsh dominated these accolades and he scooped April’s player of the month award; the midfielder has made a huge impact since joining the club in February.

Next came recognition for Hamlet’s youngsters, who were recently crowned champions of the Under-18 Kent Youth League North. The rampant Dulwich whippersnappers netted a phenomenal 81 goals across their 16 league games, scoring at least four in fourteen different matches. The most remarkable result was a 9-0 humbling of Crockenhill Under-18s in March.

The star man from the campaign was Tom Chambers. His contribution was acknowledged with the youth team player of the year award, although he was not present at the bar to collect his accolade.

A particularly touching moment was the introduction of the John Stephens Memorial Trophy, awarded for the best individual performance in a single game.

John passed away in 2017 aged 88years-old. He had been one of the last living Hamlet fans to see Dulwich lift the old FA Amateur Cup in 1937 at Upton Park. John’s first Hamlet game came during the 1935-36 season and he still made it down to Champion Hill with his son, Cliff, until his passing in 2017. The eponymous trophy was awarded to Nathan Green for his sterling performance in the 2-1 home victory over Welling United on February 9.

Meanwhile, the club recognised the phenomenal off-field effort put in by its supporters this season, without whom Dulwich Hamlet might well have been consigned to history. It was acknowledged that every supporter who

contributed deserved a share of the volunteer of the year award.

However, Clare Keeble (Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust member), Duncan Chapman (DHST co-chairman) and Ben Clasper (DHFC director) were singled out for their monumental contributions of time and resources to the cause.

The highlight of the evening was, of course, the player of the season award.

In an inconsistent campaign, there have been few outstanding performers for Dulwich.

However, in the fans’ eyes one man towered above the rest: Preston Edwards. The goalkeeper appeared in 40 of the club’s 42 National League South matches and was a strong performer throughout. He has now made 171 appearances since his club debut in February 2016. This season he even managed make national news through his aversion to parking rules, spawning the chant, “Preston Edwards, he parks where he wants”, which echoed through the bar as he collected his prize.

The evening ended with a typically rousing speech from the club president, Jack Payne. I caught up with Jack and Preston afterwards.

The goalkeeper was in raptures following his recognition. “It means a lot that they think highly of my

I put the question to both men whether or not they regarded the season as a success.

Preston replied: “I’d say it’s a 6/10. It’s our first season in the league. To be honest, it’s tougher than I expected. I’ve been playing at Conference South for most of my career and it seems to have gone up a notch.

“After a poor start we did okay in October and November. Over the Christmas period we were awful, but we did alright in the end, particularly with our home form.”

Jack had an equally pragmatic perspective: “This season, I think the target was just to stay in the division so that we can challenge for honours next season.”

Preston emphasised the need for change if Dulwich are to progress next season. “The club will be pushing for promotion. It’s big enough to get promotion. We’re under no illusions that it’s going to be tough. There are some big clubs coming down like Aldershot, Havant [& Waterlooville] and Maidstone. It’ll be tougher than ever.

“I think we need to strengthen. We need more know-how. Sometimes it’s let us down this season. I think we need some more strong-minded players,

especially on a Tuesday night away from home when it’s wet and windy. We need people who will just roll their sleeves up and get on with it.”

Both president and player were united on the specialness of Dulwich as a club.

Preston continued: “Dulwich is very unique. I don’t think there’s another nonleague club like it: the community feel, the amount of fans they get through the door, the families, children, women, dogs. You’re pink and blue, it’s very striking and when you wear it everyone knows Dulwich are in town.”

Jack, meanwhile, could not resist nostalgia. “When I was a little boy, in 1948, I went to the ground further down the hill to see them play. My mate and I used to live just off the Walworth Road and I used to go to John Ruskin Street School. I’ll always remember playing opposite the stand, looking across and thinking, ‘I wonder if I’ll ever be able to afford to get in there?’

“Even when I was managing another team and came here with them, I was always made most welcome by the Dulwich Hamlet officials. So really and truly, I do believe it’s a special place.”

Finally, Jack could not finish without expressing his gratitude to the supporters for the sacrifices they have made to return his beloved club home. The first game back, he said, “was better than having a pint of brandy!”

Dulwich Cricket get stuck in a Rut AJ Fordham Surrey Championships

Dulwich 147 (44.5) lost to Old Rutlishians 148-1 (35.5) by 9 wickets

A DEPLETED Dulwich side lacking three first choice players were thoroughly outplayed in their AJ Fordham Surrey Championship match at home to Old Rutlishians last weekend, and went down to defeat by nine wickets.

Dulwich elected to bat, and skipper Ed Stolle and first team newcomer Chris Purhouse added 24 for the first wicket in 7.4 overs before the latter was lbw.

The score had reached 37 after 12 overs when the opening bowlers gave way to spin in the shape of leg spinner Ross Trimmings and off spinner Michael Jones. These two took two wickets apiece, and imposed such a stranglehold that Trimmings conceded just 16 runs off his first nine overs before uncharacteristically giving away 14 off his last, while Jones was even more economical, with just 14 runs coming off his ten.

Robbie Catling provided some resistance, defending stoically before taking advantage of some loose bowling to advance his score to 40. His stand of 39 with Salaar Waqar for the fifth wicket proved to be the highest of the innings, taking the score to 110 after 35 overs. Another leg spinner, New Zealander Danny Gibbs, entered the attack and also picked up two wickets. A wicket to skipper Sonny Cooper and a run out followed as Dulwich were dismissed for a disappointing 147 in the 45th over. Stolle with 23, Waqar 20, and Jon Lodwick who finished on 20 not out were the only other batsmen to get out of the teens.

Josh Price and Dan Woods launched the reply circumspectly against tight bowling by Lodwick and Kamran Munawar. Lodwick induced edges from both of them and would have had a couple of wickets had the chances been taken. But the batsmen were able to accelerate against the change bowlers, and the Dulwich spinners were unable to impose the same restraint as their opponents. The openers had added 77 in 21.4 overs when Price edged Waqar to slip for 40.

But that was the only wicket as Woods and Joe Riches added a further 71 to take their side to victory with 14 overs to spare, Woods finishing with 67 and Riches 30.

Dulwich thus failed to take a point from this defeat, and slip to 7th. This weekend they visit Oxted & Limpsfield, who have lost both their matches and stand one place and three points below them in the table.

Striker Tom is 'best finisher' at Millwall EXCLUSIVE

MILLWALL MANAGER Neil Harris believes Tom Bradshaw will come back from injury “a better player – and says he’s the Lions’ “best finisher”.

Bradshaw’s season ended in November when he suffered knee ligament damage that required surgery, but Harris feels that spell out has given the striker the chance to observe games and training and understand better how he will fit into the side when he returns.

Harris said the intention after signing Bradshaw from Barnsley last summer was to partner him with Lee Gregory, or play him when Gregory was unavailable.

But Bradshaw struggled to gain a regular place in the side, and didn’t score in ten games before his injury against Brentford.

With Millwall fearing Gregory would let his contract run down, they were looking for a long-term replacement last summer, and Bradshaw fit the bill.

The onus will be on Bradshaw to get a full pre-season under his belt and then prove he can replace the departing Gregory.

“We had to have an eye on Lee Gregory with ten months left on his contract and he made it very clear that his future lay up north,” Harris said. “So Tom Bradshaw, yes, we wanted to bring him in to possibly play with Lee Gregory, but would Lee go through the season without any injuries? Well he pretty much did, and it was Tom who got injured.

“He came in with the thought process of one day replacing Lee, [after] playing

alongside him. Tom is a goal scorer, he will score goals. He is the best finisher at the club and if given opportunities he will score goals on both feet and with his head.

“What Tom has had from having spoken to him numerous times is the opportunity whilst injured to watch the games, to study the games, to watch training, watch the players, how they play, how I want them to play and he will be a better Millwall player because of his time out injured.

“Bradders will come back fit and firing at the start of the pre-season. We have to be a little bit patient, but he is certainly going to come back a better player from the knowledge he has picked up over the last nine months than when he first signed for the club.”

Meanwhile, another player whose season was ended early by injury, Murray Wallace, will be ready for the start of preseason in June.

Wallace claimed the first-choice leftback spot in January, after being signed from Scunthorpe the previous summer to provide defensive depth.

The Scot scored two winning FA Cup goals, in injury-time against Everton in the fourth round and then against AFC Wimbledon in the next round.

He also scored two league goals, but suffered ankle and knee damage in the 21 defeat at Hull in February.

Harris said: “Murray Wallace will be fit.

It was a shame because Murray had just nailed down a position and got himself regular performances and some real good publicity from some important goals.

“Murray, Tom Bradshaw, Ryan Leonard and Ben Thompson, all four will be much better players for the season they have had this year.”

Millwall linked with move for Cherries stopper

MILLWALL ARE targeting a move for AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale this summer.

Ramsdale, 21, spent the second half of last season at AFC Wimbledon as they performed a great escape from relegation in League One. Cherries stopper Ramsdale joined the Dons in January, taking over from Tom King who had returned to Millwall.

Wimbledon’s 2-0 defeat at home to Burton in February was a fourth loss in

Ramsdale’s first five games, and left Wally Downes’ side ten points adrift of safety at the foot of the table.

But the south London side began their remarkable resurgence with five wins in their next seven games, including four consecutive clean sheets.

Ramsdale also had a shut-out on the final day, a 0-0 draw at Bradford, as Downes’ side ended the season on a seven-game unbeaten run to stay up on goal difference, one place above Plymouth.

Ramsdale played against Millwall in the fifth round of the FA Cup, and

though he was beaten by Murray Wallace’s fifth-minute header which turned out to be the winner, he caught the eye with a number of impressive saves and sure handling.

He was fourth-choice for Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth last season, and the emergence of Mark Travers towards the end of the campaign is another obstacle to the first team.

Millwall are in the market for at least two new goalkeepers this summer.

Jordan Archer and Tom King will officially leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of June. Ben

Amos has also gone back to Bolton after his loan spell at The Den, and will not be pursued on a permanent deal.

David Martin and Ryan Sandford have been offered new deals, but as of now Millwall do not have any senior goalkeepers contracted beyond June 30.

Martin, 33, finished the season as Neil Harris’ number one. But that position is set to be up for grabs at the start of next season, even if Martin stays.

Chesterton-born Ramsdale started his senior career at Sheffield United, making two appearances before moving to the south coast in the summer of 2017

for a fee of around £1million.

He has yet to feature in a senior game for Howe’s side, and was loaned to Chesterfield in the second half of the 2017-18 season, where he couldn’t help them avoid relegation from League Two. Ramsdale has the same representatives as Millwall centre-back Shaun Hutchinson, and former Lions defenders Tony Craig and Shaun Hutchinson.

Ramsdale is one of a number of goalkeepers monitored by Millwall ahead of an expected busy summer in the transfer market.

ALEX PEARCE will go from “strength to strength” because he “gets” Millwall, according to Lions boss Neil Harris.

Pearce will join on a free transfer from Derby County this summer, with Harris revealing he knew “from the moment he walked in the building” he wanted to make the Republic of Ireland international’s loan deal permanent.

After the Lions’ last home game of last season against Bristol City, Harris revealed his unhappiness with some of the squad’s professionalism, but said Pearce was “instrumental” in trying to unite the dressing room.

Pearce joined Millwall on a loan deal in January, and was a regular by the end of the season, as well as wearing the captain’s armband for a number of games.

Harris believes if Pearce had signed before the beginning of the season his side would have finished higher than 21st- in the Championship table.

“From the moment he walked in the building,” Harris responded when asked when he knew he wanted to sign the centre-back on a permanent contract.

“From the moment he came in, he showed his leadership qualities and showed his experience.

“It is unravelling from day-to-day that people are understanding the difficulties we have had this season to stay in the division. And Alex Pearce has been instrumental in the changing room in trying to keep it together.

“It's not just on this pitch, his leadership, it's off the pitch. If Alex Pearce had been in the building from the middle of August, we would have had a lot more points than we had. We wouldn't have lost the games or thrown away the lead that we did in the first four months of the season in the manor that we did, with Alex Pearce.

“We need that senior figure in the group that can play from the start or come on in games to help see it out. We tried every angle to finish games off at the start of the season. Whatever I did, five at the back, four at the back, same players, same shape, everything we tried, it didn't work, and it comes down to personnel.

“Pearcey has given us a real solidity in that back-line and struck up a real good partnership with Jake Cooper. I am

Harris went into more detail about Pearce’s qualities, and compared him to two former Lions defenders.

The Millwall manager said: “He’s a winner. He has got that experience to understand what is needed at different clubs.

“We are not an easy club to play for in the sense of on the pitch – Millwall more so than any other club. You have got to make your own decisions of what is

Martin, 33, ended the season as the Lions’ first-choice goalkeeper, and he has been offered a new deal.

With Jordan Archer and Tom King on the way out, Millwall currently have no senior goalkeeper contracted beyond June 30.

Millwall boss Neil Harris said: “We certainly need two goalkeepers. Dave Martin did really well for us and I would like Dave to stay, but there is competition for his signature.

“We need fresh impetus in that position.

It’s certainly going to be two goalkeepers, whether that is one and Dave Martin or whether that is two goalkeepers and Dave Martin doesn't stay with us.

“I’m never confident on players staying, not in the modern game. You can get close to a player and think a deal is done and it falls through, I have seen that in my last four years. Never confident on players until they are signed on the dotted line.

“We are really pleased about how Dave went about his business when called upon late in the season and how he responded to the Brighton error.

“He has shown his class and his qualities as a professional and as a man and as a goalkeeper. We will have to see, but the ball is in Dave’s court.”

conceded far too many goals before Christmas. Since then we have really tightened up, been difficult to beat, back to how we were the season previous to last year.

“I think we realised that Shaun Hutchinson not on his A-game was a big loss to us. Mahlon [Romeo] and Jake are two young players that have done fantastically well for me. Those young players have got a real bright future, but they do need leadership and experience, especially when things are tough.

“Alex Pearce coming into the team and Dave Martin in behind were key to that, key to their form.”

Nelson travels to Wembley with Tranmere Rovers this Saturday when they face Newport County for a place in League One. The Birkenhead club are aiming for a second straight promotion.

Centre-back Nelson, 23, is being released by Millwall this summer, and another of his former loan clubs, Swindon Town, have been linked with a move for him.

Nelson broke his nose early on in his current loan spell, and had to be patient to win back his place in the side.

But he played in both legs of the semi-final as Tranmere knocked out Forest Green 2-1 on aggregate.

Nelson recently spoke about his time with the League Two club and how it has helped his development.

“Playing in a team that’s doing well, winning quite frequently, and with the position we are in, I haven’t had that since I’ve been out on loan”, Nelson said.

“You pick up things all the time when you’re out on loan. Whether it’s training, coaches asking different things of you, the players you play around can be better or not so good. But here it has been really good because I’ve learned a winning mentality whether I’m in the side or not.

“You are surrounded by it, every day it is intense and it keeps you with the right attitude and with a positive mind frame.”

NEIL HARRIS has admitted Jiri Skalak had a “disastrous year” – but threw down the challenge to the winger to “fight for the shirt” next season.

Skalak, 27, played 19 times for the Lions last season, including only eight starts, after joining from Brighton last summer.

He made 31 league appearances for the Seagulls to help them to promotion to the Premier League in 2016-17.

But then injuries kept him out for the majority of the following season. The Czech Republic international featured in three League Cup games and once in the FA Cup, failing to make an appearance in the top flight.

It means he has started just four league games in the last two years.

After coming on in the 89th minute of the 1-0 Championship win over Reading on Boxing Day, Skalak featured just once more in the league last season, as a 62nd-minute substitute in the final-day 1-0 defeat at Wigan.

There has been some doubt over Skalak’s future at the club, but Harris has offered the player encouragement

“I used him in the last half hour of the last game of the season to say, 'the opportunity is there if you want it', but he has got to come back and want that and earn that.

“He has got to come back and show that ability of the player that we signed for a transfer fee last August on the back of the ability he had shown in a Brighton shirt to win promotion out of this division.

“He has to show that again and if we get that from Jiri Skalak then he will be a good addition to the group.”

Striker on target for pre-season

MILLWALL STRIKER Tom Bradshaw should be ready for the start of pre-season training at the end of June.

Bradshaw, 26, had surgery on his knee last November after suffering ligament damage against Brentford and he missed the rest of the season.

He was Millwall’s record signing from Barnsley the previous August and played ten times before his campaign was brought to an abrupt end.

Bradshaw was ahead of schedule in his recovery, and was back running on a treadmill in February.

But Millwall have taken their time with the player, making sure he hits each physical target in his recovery.

The Lions hope that Bradshaw can fill the gap that will be left by Lee Gregory, who officially leaves the club when his contract runs out on July 1.

Bradshaw spent pre-season training with Barnsley last year before his August switch to south London, but should benefit from a full preparation schedule with Millwall ahead of 2019-20.

Lions boss Neil Harris gave an update this week on the former Walsall centreforward’s progress.

“Tom Bradshaw is 95 per cent there, he is very close to full strength in both legs. He has been running for three months now. “ H e should be ready for the start.”
