A GRANDFATHER whose chances of survival were ‘one in a million’ after he suffered a heart attack while swimming has returned to The Castle Centre to thank the quick-thinking staff who saved his life.

On Thursday, April 11, six weeks to the day of his heart attack, seventy-seven-year-old Jim Bourlet returned to the Everyone Active leisure centre near Elephant and Castle to thank the lifeguards and staff on duty that day.

NEARLY THREE hundred people had been arrested as the News went to press as part of green protests which began on Monday, seeing activists blockade Waterloo Bridge.

On Tuesday night, police said there had been 290 total arrests of Extinction Rebellion protesters, who have camped out on Waterloo Bridge, Parliament Square, Marble Arch, Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus in a bid to force radical action on climate change.

The majority of those were for public order and highway obstruction offences at Waterloo, said Scotland Yard. The figure may now be higher, as arrests continue.

In an escalation of tactics on Wednesday, the group vowed to disrupt Tube lines, sparking concern from Mayor Sadiq Khan, who said he was “extremely concerned” at the plan.

However, the impact on the commuters was not yet clear as the News went to press.

The first five protesters arrested were taken into custody by police on Monday afternoon after reports of criminal damage at the Shell headquarters on Belvedere Road.

“XR Activists continue to cause criminal damage at Shell building in London to make them ‘look dirty’ and highlight their ecocidal practices,” said the group as the damage was ongoing.

“At least 4 arrested, 2 glued on to cracked windows.”

Graffiti stating “Shell kills” was sprayed onto the building while the glass of the building’s foyer door was also reportedly smashed by an activist.

A banner unfurled by green protesters at the building stated: “Stop ecocide! Who are the real criminals?”, while further graffiti labelled it a “crime scene.”

Police said three men and two women, aged in their forties and fifties, were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and taken to a central London police station in connection with the incident.

They have since been released under investigation. A further two people were also later arrested by police.

Separately, the Met has also imposed a condition lasting until Friday requiring the bridge protesters move to Marble Arch to carry out their demos.

Officers said they felt the conditions, imposed under Section 14 of the Public Order Act 1986, were “necessary in order to prevent the demonstrations from causing ongoing serious disruption to community.”

Road signs have been erected warning of “global warming at work” and “Triassic weather ahead.”

Protesters were still campaigning at the locations as the News went to press.

“We expect demonstrations to continue throughout the coming weeks,” warned Chief Superintendent Wingrove.

Police estimate that the “severe disruption” has affected 500,000 people and closed 55 bus routes so far.

Bermondsey named one of the ‘Best Places to Live’

BERMONDSEY HAS once again been named as one of the best places to live in Britain according to a guide by national newspaper The Sunday Times and online mortgage broker Habito.

The Best Places to Live 2019 rankings, published on Sunday, names Bermondsey as the fifth best place to live in London. “Bermondsey has made our best places to live list for five years in a row and there’s no sign of a backlash brewing,” said the judges.

“Its warehouse vibe still feels cool, historic and a little bit secret: Bermondsey Street has not yet succumbed to Shoreditch-style stag parties and remains a civilised and romantic place.”

The panel also praised Bermondsey’s

food outlets and pubs, as well as nearby arts venues.

It said “the gussied-up period pubs, the Gregorian and St James of Bermondsey, are drawing a younger, cooler demographic; and the success of the Maltby Street food market has spawned a newer grittier creation, the Spa Terminus, where Monmouth Coffee rubs shoulders with smaller artisan outfits such as the Little Bread Pedlar.”

It continues: “Foodie culture has grown side by side with fitness: there’s a huge PureGym, an Arch climbing wall, boot camp in Southwark Park and a five-a-side football scene, as well as jogging on Thames Path.”

The Southwark location was the only place to stay in the London top ten, but dropped off the top London spot which it claimed last year.

Crystal Palace and Blackheath were also named in the top ten places to live in London, with the Isle of Dogs landing the top spot for the capital.

The “unheralded corner of Docklands” took the prize because of its good transport links and relatively affordable prices for Zone 2, said the judges.

Nationally, Salisbury, Wilts, was named as the best place to live in Britain.

THE STORY of a bus driver who attended to one of the victims of the London Bridge terror attack could feature among the tales of unsung heroes when the inquest begins next month.

Anton Sobanski, 40, had been coming to the end of a ten-hour shift driving the No 40 bus to Dulwich when he was involved in the atrocity on June 3, 2017, which claimed the lives of eight innocent victims.

Speaking in a video filmed days after the attack, he said: “There was a van that went across London Bridge and crashed.

Three men with very large knives got out and attacked people.”

At the time, he did not know the terrorists were armed with knives. “It was very scary. I didn’t know for ten minutes that they had knives.

“I remember hearing a scream, I looked

in my off-side mirror and saw a white Renault van very quickly just came across and had obviously hit the lady.”

The lady was Christine Archibald, a Canadian visitor to London with her fiancé. She is said to have died in her partner’s arms of her injuries.

Mr Anton initially thought it was a traffic accident, but realised quickly it was not the case as the van continued to accelerate, he says in his video.

“I was telling my passengers, there’s a terrorist attack, please stay on the bus. Just a big thing to deal with all at once.

“As I got out of my bus, my priority was to look after my passengers and also to attend to the lady.

“I was going in-between my bus and the people who were down on the ground.”

The bus driver, who vlogs his travels on YouTube, rushed to the aid of Christine, while also trying to make sure the ten passengers on his bus remained safe – including two children under three years old.

“I told them, ‘Don’t worry, I’m going to look after you’. That was my duty,” he said.

“When something like this happens, I don’t know, I stepped up to the mark because I know I’ve got to help to do whatever I can to help.”

He praised those who faced the attackers, saying they were “the real heroes.”

“Those are the true heroes of that night, they were the real heroes, the ones that faced these people with knives and got injured and carried on,” he recounted.

The inquest for the victims is due to begin on May 7 and will last around two months.

Those who died were: Christine Archibald, 30, Australian Kirsty Boden, 28, Australian Sara Zelenak, 21, James CHRISTINE ARCHIBALD McMullan, 32, of Hackney, French nationals 26-year-old Alexandre Pigeard, Xavier Thomas, 45, and chef Sebastien Belanger, 36, and Spaniard Ignacio Echeverria, 39.

The three terrorists’ white van mounted the pavement and ploughed into pedestrians as it drove south across London Bridge, at approximately 50mph.

Many revellers were out in Borough to watch the Champions League final, which had not long finished.

The van then crashed outside of the Barrowboy and Banker pub on the foot of London Bridge.

The three attackers leapt from the van and ran into Borough Market. They entered pubs and restaurants and stabbed people at random. There were three reported stabbings inside Black and Blue restaurant, El Pastor Mexican restaurant, and Brindisa, and outside Roast restaurant, and the Southwark Tavern. A badly injured woman was found outside the Mudlark pub under London Bridge, whilst another staggered into the pub.

POLICE CLEARED AFTER TEEN WAS Peabody rejects claim ‘SERIOUSLY INJURED’ IN ARREST of having ‘segregated’ communal play area

THE POLICE watchdog has cleared officers who pushed a teenager off his bike in a case of mistaken identity in Bermondsey, leaving him reportedly suffering a seizure, lost teeth and bruising on the brain.

An officer involved in the arrest of the boy, then aged 15, pushed him off his bike into a shop front on Southwark Park Road in November 2017.

The News has chosen not to name or picture him on this occasion.

Police had suspected the teen of being involved in a robbery in Rotherhithe earlier that evening – but he was later found to not have been involved at all.

Pictures of his injuries circulated widely on social media, sparking a significant backlash.

However, the watchdog said there was no evidence that the officers involved had breached professional standards following an investigation lasting more than a year.

It said that officers saw a number of

young people inside a park, including the teenager, whom police believed was the robber based on the description they had been given.

As officers arrived, the young people quickly left on their bikes.

The IOPC said it believed it “reasonable” for officers to suspect the youngsters of being involved in the robbery, and that they had left because of the police.

One of them was the fifteen-year-old, who cycled along the edge of Shuttleworth Park across Southwark Park Road before being pushed off by an officer causing “serious” injuries.

The IOPC said it was of the opinion the officer who pushed him reasonably believed he was trying to evade police.

However, it noted the College of Policing and the Metropolitan Police have no specific training for police making arrests of suspects on bikes, and it would raise this as something which might need to be clarified.

Finally it concluded the officers had not acted in a discriminatory way and were

acting on the information provided to them.

IOPC Deputy Director General, Jonathan Green, said: “The teenager’s injuries were serious and I hope he is able to make a full recovery.

“Our investigation concluded that the police officers involved were acting on the information provided to them and were justified in believing he may have been a suspect in the robbery.

“We found a police officer was responsible for pushing the teenager off his bike and the resulting injuries.

However, the investigation did not find evidence to question the honesty or reasonableness of the officer’s actions in the circumstances.

“Footage circulated in the media of this incident attracted a lot of public concern and discussion; it was right and proper that it be investigated independently.

“We will be working with the National College of Policing to see if work is required to clarify how a situation like this is best handled by officers in the future.”

SIBERIAN HUSKY, KINKY, REUNITED WITH HER OWNERS

A LOST Siberian husky found wandering on train tracks near Nunhead has been reunited with her owners with the help of some detective work by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

Two-year-old Kinky was found by a local dog warden dangerously wandering on the tracks of the overground station.

Fortunately unharmed, she was taken to Battersea and scanned for a microchip, but although one had been implanted there were no registered details of her owner.

Luckily, her owners had been in touch with their local dog warden and reported her missing to DogLostUK, and Battersea staff were able to make contact

with her family.

Her owner, Audacity Pharos, happily picked her up and told the team the family had recently moved to London from Sicily in Italy.

He said Kinky had an adventurous streak and had gone missing after jumping out of a window earlier that day.

Battersea’s centre manager, Steve Craddock, said Kinky’s adventures were a reminder for owners to make sure they microchip and keep their details up to date.

“It’s clear that Kinky has lived a very exploratory life for a young dog, but we

hope that now she keeps her intrepid adventures to a minimum.

“Although the process wasn’t straightforward, we’re so happy to reunite Kinky with her owners and get them back on track.

“However, many dogs who come into Battersea without a microchip, or with their chip details out of date, are not so lucky – as it’s often impossible for us to track down their owners.

“I’d urge everyone to make sure that their pets are microchipped with up to date details.

“If they ever go missing, an up to date microchip means that they can be reunited with their owners as soon as possible.”

PEABODY HAS denied claims of segregated play areas on a Camberwell development following media reports.

The former Mary Datchelor School site, previously the headquarters of charity Save the Children, was hit by claims of segregation between social housing tenants and private owners following an investigation into segregated play areas by The Guardian newspaper.

The complex has a block of apartments operated by Berkeley Homes and an adjacent block by Peabody. A hedge in a large communal garden reportedly divides the private owners from the social tenants.

However, a spokesperson from Peabody rebutted the claims, saying tenants in both social and privateflats were on both sides of the hedge and enjoyed equal access to the communal facilities.

“All residents at Mary Datchelor House can access outdoor spaces, including the communal gardens,” said a spokesperson.

“The hedge is part of the landscaping in the gardens between two blocks, each has a mix of social and private homes. Both spaces offer the same facilities for residents to enjoy.”

Council bosses and opposition councillors had expressed concern about the prospect of segregation before Peabody carried out its investigation at Mary Datchelor House.

Cllr Johnson Situ, cabinet member for growth, development and planning, said it was not immediately clear from the image what the situation was but that he would be writing to Peabody for clarification.

“It is not acceptable for any resident, irrespective of their housing tenure, to be excluded or treated as second class citizens in any way, under any circumstances,” he said.

“This relates to an historic piece of planning permission dating back to 2007.

“We would always challenge a proposal where segregated sections are included in a scheme, and we have not seen any such proposal coming to committee in recent times.

“While this has not been formally supported by planning policy in the past, the council is making sure this is understood by developers in the future, by introducing a new policy on social regeneration that seeks to address this issue.”

Speaking before Peabody’s response, Cllr Humaira Ali, equalities spokesperson for the opposition Lib Dems, said: “Stopping kids from different backgrounds playing together by actively building barriers is wrong.

“These are not the values Southwark is built on and it really should not be going on in 2019.”

A spokesperson for Berkeley Homes, which maintains a complex of apartments on one side of the hedge, told the News they would not be commenting on the reports of ‘segregation’.

A GRANDFATHER whose chances of survival were ‘one in a million’ after he suffered a heart attack while swimming has returned to The Castle Centre to thank the quick-thinking staff who saved his life.

On Thursday, April 11, six weeks to the day of his heart attack, seventy-sevenyear-old Jim Bourlet returned to the Everyone Active leisure centre near Elephant and Castle to thank the lifeguards and staff on duty that day.

At the time of his attack Jim – who had stents fitted ten years ago - had felt completely normal as he prepared for his usual swim.

But while in the water he blanked out and was brought to the poolside by lifeguards who began performing CPR, and give him two defibrillator shocks when they realised his heart had stopped beating.

The retired university lecturer who now works part time for an economics think tank, and has lived near Elephant and Castle for 50 years, was unconscious for twenty minutes in total - and they couldn’t find a heartbeat.

Miraculously, the father-of-two and grandfather-of four-has now made a full recovery after regaining consciousness in hospital.

The paramedics who took him to St Thomas’ told he’d had a ‘one in a million chance’ of survival.

He praised the quick thinking of the lifeguards and leisure centre staff, and credited his 20 lengths every-other-day habit with helping him recover so quickly.

77-year-old had just ‘one in a million’ chance of survival

“The stents effectively sorted out the ‘plumbing’ in my heart but the heart attack was the result of the ‘electrics’ failing,” he said.

“I consider myself lucky to have made a good recovery and have lost nothing in terms of my abilities or memory.”

“I think a lot is owed to the fact that I’ve kept fit all my life and for the last 20 years have done my best to swim 20 lengths every other day.

“It’s not a huge amount but it is regular.

I’m sure that helped me survive my heart attack and recover well.

“The moral of my story is that you should never give up on CPR however hopeless it may look. If you find yourself giving first aid, keep trying until the paramedics arrive.

“I am only here today because the extraordinary Everyone Active team acted swiftly and persevered with their effort.

“My life was in their hands and I can’t thank them enough for what they did until the ambulance arrived.”

He has now had a resynchronisation therapy defibrillator fitted to guard against another heart attack, and says he hopes to be back in the water within weeks.

General manager, Trevor Pardoe, said: “We are delighted to see Jim has recovered so well and it’s a wonderful gesture on his part to return to thank the team in person.

“We look forward to seeing him back in the pool when the doctors give him the green light to resume swimming.”

The axe falls on the RV1 bus despite local campaign

TFL HAS confirmed that it will withdraw the RV1 bus service on June 15 despite fierce local opposition to the axe.

The transport quango carried out a consultation last year about cutting the route as part of its proposals to change 34 of central London’s bus services.

Councillors across the Southwark political divide and residents’ groups opposed the cut – but TfL confirmed it will go ahead with the plan on Friday.

In consultation comments, it was revealed that 1,402 people expressed concerns about access to London Bridge and Blackfriars in the bus shake-up, with the withdrawal of the RV1 being the most common concern.

TfL has insisted scrapping the zeroemissions route, which serves areas of Waterloo, South Bank and Tower Bridge, was necessary as usage had reportedly fallen.

“The total cost of operating the RV1 is about £3.3 million per year,” said the agency in its review of the route, which connects some of the borough’s tourist hotspots such as the South Bank, Globe and Borough Market.

“Fares revenue is about £650,000 per year, meaning there is a subsidy of £2.6 million a year for the route, about £3.23 for each customer journey.”

The move has been slammed by ward councillors whose constituencies are served by the route.

Liberal Democrat Cllr Victor Chamberlain, of Borough and Bankside ward, said he was “bitterly disappointed” by the Mayor’s decision.

“The RV1 is a vital local service which thousands of local people rely upon,” he said. “The Mayor has shamefully turned his back on them.

Route 40 will be curtailed, with the route no longer running between Elephant & Castle and Aldgate but instead extended to Clerkenwell along Blackfriars. TfL said the route will be changed on June 15.

Changes to route 53, which runs between Whitehall and Plumstead will also go ahead on June 15. Changes to the route mean the service will no longer run between Whitehall and County Hall.

After consultation, TfL said it has modified its proposals for route 171. Now the service will be withdrawn between Holborn and Elephant & Castle, with the stand swapping locations.

Route 171 will swap stand workings with route 468, picking up and setting down on London Road, to allow “easy” interchange for Holborn services, said TfL. Cllr Richard Livingstone, who holds the transport brief at Southwark Council, also criticised the “short-sighted” bus cuts, saying they would hit the most vulnerable residents in the borough hardest.

He also pointed out that several of the services affected by the Mayor’s plans have seen growing passenger numbers.

“We are hugely disappointed by this announcement and would like to understand why TfL has gone ahead with cutting back popular services with growing passenger numbers, such as the 40, 53, 171 and RV1,” he said.

“We simply want a service that ensures that everybody in Southwark can access efficient, affordable, reliable and safe bus services, now and into the future, these plans fall short of this.”

One commuter said in response to the news on social media: “Disappointed to discover that TfL is getting rid of the RV1 bus route which runs from Aldwych to Tower passing the London Eye and going across Tower Bridge.

“It’s the best tourist route bus but useful for commuters and a pleasant journey weaving around London. A shame.”

Other criticism came from London Assembly members.

“Whilst I acknowledge the need for periodic health checks of our transport network in London, I am very concerned that the changes will have a significant impact on those who rely on local bus services for their commute to work and to get around the capital,” said Labour’s Florence Eshalomi, AM for Lambeth and Southwark.

Meanwhile the Liberal Democrats’ Caroline Pidgeon added: “This foolish decision by the Mayor to scrap the RV1 bus route will not be forgotten.”

SOUTHWARK RESIDENTS will pay a £30 annual charge for garden waste collections from June.

The new yearly ’subscription’, to be introduced on June 1, will cost £25 until March 31 2020, and £30 a year thereafter.

The charge will be the lowest in the capital for the service, said council bosses.

While collections will still be weekly the collection day may change, warn council officials, to maintain “route efficiency.”

A letter sent to Southwark’s 51,000 kerbside properties states: “We have seen that over time not everyone who receives it is making use of the garden waste service.

“We believe that it is fairer that only those using the service contribute towards the running of it.”

Garden waste collections will still be taken at the borough’s Household Reuse and Recycling Centre in Devon Street, Peckham, for those able to travel to the centre.

However, Cllr Graham Neale, environment spokesperson for the opposition Lib Dems, said he feared the move would mean more rubbish being dumped on the streets.

“It seems like Southwark Labour simply want to burn all our rubbish, despite the emissions that causes. I fear we will end up with more stuff dumped on streets and our housing estates.”

Cllr Richard Livingstone, who holds the environment portfolio for Southwark Council said: “Sadly, the scale of cuts in government funding to the council and the need to protect the essential services that we deliver across the borough, mean that it has become necessary to find new ways of covering this cost.

“As the majority of homes in our borough do not have their own garden, we believe that it is fairer that those using the service contribute towards the running of it.”

Nationally, the average charge for garden waste collections was over £42, and a number of London boroughs charge over £50, he added.

The new charge has split residents, with some blasting it as a “rip-off” – but others saying central government cuts were to blame.

“Looks like another rip off from the council after a council tax rise, why don't they just bleed us dry once and for all,” said one. However, another said: “Don't be angry at the council, be angry at the government who have cut council funding.”

A GP surgery on Queen's Road has been rated 'inadequate' after its latest inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The Queen’s Road Partnership in Lewisham, which serves nearly 10,000 patients, was found to not have clear systems and processes in place to keep patients safe, had not undertaken criminal records checks for some staff who were performing chaperone duties, and had failed to implement infection prevention and control systems at February’s inspection.

Although the kindness and respect shown by staff was praised, a lack of oversight and assessment from the top meant risks and performance issues were left unidentified and unresolved.

Staff had not had appraisals since 2017.

The surgery has now been placed in special measures and ordered to improve its care and treatment and set up the right systems and governance to ensure it meets 'fundamental standards of care'.

CQC head of inspection for primary medical services in London, Antony Hall, said: “The last time we inspected The Queen’s Road Partnership, it was rated 'good' overall, and it is concerning that standards have fallen to such a degree that it is now inadequate.”

Lewisham CCG told the News it was working with staff to improve standards.

“Patients from The Queen’s Road Partnership will understandably be concerned by the findings of the recent Care Quality Commission report, which resulted in the practice receiving an inadequate rating," a spokesperson said.

“NHS Lewisham CCG would like to reassure patients that the practice has

developed, and is implementing, a comprehensive action plan to address the issues highlighted in the report.

“Keeping patients and the public safe at all times remains the priority of everyone involved.

"We are working with staff from the practice to support them to make the necessary improvements and we will monitor progress closely.

“The Queen’s Road Partnership have expressed their disappointment with the findings of the inspection but fully accept that they have fallen short of the high standards they had set for themselves and that of the CCG. "They are committed to making the required improvements and delivering excellent patient care will continue to be their primary focus.”

At the time of going to press, the News had been unable to contact the practice for comment.

THE DUKE and Duchess of Sussex’s baby will be a girl called Olivia, according to a poll of Southwark residents.

InLink, the company behind the communications networks across the borough that have superseded traditional payphones, commissioned the poll and found more than half (57 per cent) of residents surveyed thought the imminent arrival would be a girl.

More than a quarter (26 per cent) thought her name would be Olivia, closely followed by second-choice Emma coming in with 24 per cent of the vote.

For those predicting a boy, 40 per cent of people said they believed Arthur would be first choice, followed by Oliver at 23 per cent.

Perhaps most surprisingly, eleven per cent of people in Southwark had no idea the couple were even expecting.

THE THIRD annual STEP Youth Theatre Festival came to Theatre Peckham this month with young performers showcasing their talent.

Among those performing were Bacon’s College Year Ten drama group, who adapted Dr Korczak’s Example, set in war-time Poland when thousands were crammed into a Jewish ghetto.

The play follows the story of Adzio, a sixteen-year-old Jewish boy, living on the streets, and Dr Korczak, who

helps abandoned children in his orphanage.

City of London Academy, Mountview and Compass schools united to set up Play On, which brings a new approach to acting and teaching Shakespeare and produced Happy Birthday Macbeth, a prequel set on Macbeth’s eighteenth, and introducing the real cause of his rivalry with Duncan.

Another Shakespeare reimagining came from Southwark Youth Theatre, who staged their version of Shakespeare’s Henry V. Abril Martinez-Brenes, from Tuke School, a special educational needs school in Peckham, performed two of her favourite songs, and Theatre Peckham’s own young company showed off their X.Y.Z, described as scenes of teenage London life with a ‘hint of surrealism’.

How many people to change a lightbulb?

STREET LAMPS on Peckham Rye Common have been out of action for four months, leaving walkers fearing for their safety.

Lynne McKeon contacted Southwark Council in December to report three broken lights on the pathway through the park, and was told the bulbs would be replaced in around ten days’ time.

But by early April the lamps still had not been fixed despite her repeated complaints.

“I walk my dog very early in the morning and late at night and feel very anxious about how dark it makes the pathway with these street lights not working,” Lynn told the News.

“Surely with crime statistics they should be making something as simple as lighting a priority - a few bulbs are hardly going to break the bank.”

Southwark Council cabinet member Rebecca Lury said the issue was due to a damaged UK Power Network mains. “In an effort to resolve the matter as quickly as possible, we are currently working to install a new power supply within the park ourselves, so that we can run new cabling to the affected lights.

“I apologise that this was not communicated to Ms McKeon, but we are working to resolve the problem as fast as we can.”

According to data from the Met, there were 35 recorded robberies in the Peckham Rye area between January 2018 and February of this year.

E’RE NOW in late April and still part of the European Union despite Theresa May stating more than 100 times that the UK would leave the European Union on 29th March and then again on 12th April.

Theresa May could have handled things very differently, but instead of reaching out to a divided country to seek to heal the division and to compromise for the sake of bringing Leavers and Remainers together, she decided to negotiate with the European Union only on behalf of the far right of the Tory party – aiming for a hard Brexit defined by the right wing Tory European Research Group.

A hard Brexit would be a disaster for London and for the rest of the country. Currency speculators and the ultra-rich would have thrived,

but life would be made incredibly tough for many local residents on low and middle incomes.

The Tories have wasted billions of pounds on preparations to leave the European Union with no deal, money that is desperately needed for our National Health Service, our schools, to tackle the housing crisis, reversing the Tories punitive welfare cuts and providing our local councils with the funds they need to meet the difficult demands

placed on them every week. The uncertainty of Brexit is already damaging our economy, causing job losses in some parts of the country and bringing investment to a standstill.

I voted and strongly campaigned to Remain in 2016 and would do the same again now.

Theresa May has brought her deal to Parliament three times, and three times it has been rejected both by remainers and leavers alike.

Ultimately the only way to break the impasse in Parliament and in the country is to give the British people the final say on whether to leave the EU with a deal or remain in the EU

RGGH! ANOTHER proposal to build on Burgess Park protected Metropolitan Open Land (MOL)!

I set up the Burgess Park Action Group with some residents from the Aylesbury Estate and we launched a year long campaign to get the fouteen acres restored.

Burgess Park was created from thousands of homes & businesses during the 60 years since World War 2. The Abercrombie Plan had identified the area lacking in open space and proposed the creation of the park.

The Greater London Council identified the proposed lands for the park boundary and started the painful process of compulsorily purchasing homes and businesses.

Upon the demise of the GLC, Southwark reaffirmed the proposed boundary in its Mid-South Southwark Plan and continued the CPOs. In the 90’s as mentioned above they tried unsuccessfully to change the boundary.

They again tried to remove the New Church Road wildlife site and its adjacent derelict sites from the boundary in the 2000’s UDP. But BPAG fought back successfully.

What the Dickens?

My first campaign that Southwark News covered was back in 1992. Southwark Council was proposing to remove six bits of the designated GLC boundary of the park, from its protected status as MOL. MOL is the greatest protection you can give land in London.

But BPAG fought back successfully.

Finally, in the 2018 new Southwark Plan they did not seek to remove them and Southwark promised in 2014 that they would refurbish the wildlife site and CPO the final two derelict sites planned for the park. In 2018 they delivered on that promise for one of them and it is now properly landscaped.

However, now in 2019 the final piece of the jigsaw, the derelict site used for car-washing and scrap-yard has a developer seeking to build an up to six storey apartment-block on this precious entrance to the park. A petition calling on the council to refuse planning permission and to fulfil their promise to landscape this eyesore is on Change.org called “No Building on Burgess Park Protected Open Space” A Facebook Group called “No Building on Burgess Park MOL” has also been set up….

THE NEWS has previously reported on Brexit fears for Borough Market, with its chair warning a No Deal would disrupt complicated food supply chains across the continent.

One shopper snapped a market trader’s sign, which did not appear to have a visible decimal point – and so looked to be advertising any three fruits for £100.

Livestream success

LAST WEEK, we reported that changes to YouTube policies might

hammer the council’s efforts to livestream its meetings.

Under a new guideline, only YouTube accounts with more than 1,000 subscribers would unlock the privilege to live-stream from their mobile devices.

At the time, the council’s channel didn’t meet the threshold. Now, however, the council’s managed to clear the hurdle with 1,018 subscribers.

YouTube has still not answered our query on whether local councils could be made exempt from the requirement to ensure all meetings could be livestreamed whatever their number of followers.

N FRIDAY, TfL announced the results of its consultation into central London bus route changes, many of which serve Southwark residents. Among the confirmed changes was the axing of the RV1 bus, running from Covent Garden to Tower Gateway.

The move had been fiercely opposed by residents, ward councillors and the council from the start.

“A sad day for Southwark bus users,” says Cllr Richard Livingstone, who holds the transport brief at the town hall, also pointing out changes to other Southwark routes including the 40, 171 and others.

“The RV1 is a vital local service which thousands of local people rely upon,” adds Cllr Victor Chamberlain of Borough and Bankside ward. We agree.

It is disappointing that a near-universal chorus of objections from stakeholders in Southwark does not appear to have been acknowledged. The timing was also inauspicious. On April 8, the Mayor unveiled with great fanfare the ultra-low emissions zone (ULEZ) – the world’s first 24-hour pollution charge area.

On April 12, TfL decided to formally withdraw the RV1 bus from June.

Paradoxically, the hydrogen-powered bus with zero emissions serving some of the capital’s most polluted areas has been withdrawn in the very same week as tough new environmental measures were unveiled.

Very few would argue that TfL should run bus services which are inefficient and require expensive subsidies. This was its rationale for withdrawing the RV1 service. The operating cost for the service is around £3.3million a year, while fare revenue was around £650,000, says the agency – a subsidy of £3.23 per customer.

However, passenger numbers were improving last year, after closures around Tooley Street came to an end. (The frequency of the service was reduced while nearby road closures were ongoing, as bosses at TfL cited falling passenger use.)

And current figures do not take into account expected demographic changes in the borough. Areas in the north part of our borough served by the route are only likely to see more people in the future, not fewer.

Moreover, the route is unique: it serves some of the most popular tourist destinations in London, let alone the borough. The Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe and Borough Market can all be seen through a trip on the RV1. It is for that reason it has been labelled the best way to sight-see in the capital on a shoe-string budget. The review of central London bus services could have been an opportunity for the RV1 – to be promoted not just as a service to residents who do not already currently use it, but to the many tourists who visit our borough for its many cultural attractions. Sadly, this has not proven to be the case. We hope Southwark residents do not severely stand to lose out as a result.

Two slightly distorted musicians recreate Tubular Bells

FOR MYSELF and many others of a certain age, Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells was the soundtrack of our lives, at least for a couple of years in the 1970s, writes Michael Holland...

Others will know it from TV commercials or by being terrified by The Exorcist soundtrack. For Australian musician Dan Holdsworth he found Tubular Bells through drinking wine with friend Aidan Roberts and listening to an old vinyl copy, which they ‘found fascinating’ and took one step further by making a show out of it with just the two of them recreating what a whole bunch of musicians playing 20 instruments usually do, writes Michael Holland.

They did a one-off show for friends with a few instruments, then again with more instrumentation, and before long Tubular Bells For Two was born. Since then it has amazed critics at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, won awards and had Tom Bamford replace Aidan. But the concept remains the same: Two blokes juggling over 20 instruments live in a nail-biting tightrope theatre recreation of the classic album.

Things can go wrong at any moment, and the slightest mistake or misplaced limb can bring the entire show crashing to a halt.

Dan and Tom, who is also a

member of Indie rock band, Yeevs, were both born in the Blue Mountains, NSW, and have been musicians longer than they can remember.

Dan: ‘I can still remember the first time my mum let me put the needle on a record. I was 4 years old. It was ELO's “A New World Record”…

There's something special about the event of listening to a vinyl record.’

Tom: ‘My parents must have seen something in me, they bought me a blue acoustic guitar for my 12th birthday. I played that thing to death and quickly realised music was something important to me.’

The young boys had supportive parents. Tom says, ‘They could see how important and necessary it all is, which was a real blessing for a young musician.; to be given that freedom to explore and grow without too much pressure.’

Daniel remembers that after early performances they were invited to the Edinburgh Fringe to perform their Tubular Bells. ‘We instantly sold-out and won a string of awards.

I think the show really fit the fringe well because, while we're serious about the music, the situation we're in is comical and the task we have to pull off is almost acrobatic. The show is incredibly tense.’ Since then it has toured in New Zealand, across mainland Europe, Iceland, and the

USA. ‘We've even been to Bendigo!’

I wondered if they had to learn new instruments to do this. Tom tells me, ‘Funnily enough, playing the tubular bells was not one of my fortes, however, they are fairly quick to figure out. The other instruments were all within our wheelhouse prior to doing this show.’

Dan reveals other problems: ‘There's 20 instruments on stage, most of them are either string based, keyboard based or percussion, and I can play all of those instruments. I definitely had to improve my skills on a few of them, but on the whole I know them pretty well… The playing of the individual instruments isn't what's hard about the show, what’s incredibly difficult is trying to play multiple instruments at once.’

Amazingly the whole of the album will be recreated by these musical marvels, and I can’t wait to hear two slightly distorted guitars.

Dan is keen to let people know that, ‘For this tour we are lucky enough to have Mike Oldfield's son supporting us. Luke Oldfield, and his band, Gypsyfingers, will be the opening act… And all with dad Mike’s blessing.’

Circus audience fear for their lives as the performers just smile back

EIGHT NONDESCRIPT people line up at the back of a small stage staring back at an audience staring at them, writes Michael Holland...

After an awkward silence they find themselves isolated spots, shout 'Falling!' and fall backwards.

Miraculously they are caught by one of their colleagues before hitting the ground. Most of the time. This is choreographed up to a point but the nature of this type of acrobatic performance by Gravity & Other Myths means there is room for error and when those mistakes occur people can get hurt. Fortunately no one did, although I was quivering with terror several times, writes Michael Holland After a few hectic minutes of devised mayhem the troupe once again stood at the rear of the stage and allowed the crowd to get its breath back. Behind their eyes you could see them smiling at our amazement. They then took it up a gear, energies rose throughout the Spiegeltent and as they smiled away on stage while throwing each other around, grunts and groans emanated from a stunned audience apparently living every move.

This Australian circus company has discarded any glitz and glamour to create A Simple Space and bring the true essence of circus acrobatics right down to its true core. We were at the front and could see the rawness of their endeavours. I truly feared for our safety when one of the performers stood atop a colleague’s head with one foot, while

he was balancing on the shoulders of another at the bottom. If they fell they would fall on the front row, and even though they knew how to fall and land, I hadn’t had any training in catching tumbling acrobats!

And when they were spinning each other around, with their faces just millimetres from the floor, I thought they were going to fly through the air and smash us all off our seats. In my peripheral vision all I could see was members of the audience flinching and covering their faces. I know that the acrobats’ smiles at the end of each throw, catch and spin was at our expense.

Gravity & Other Myths are at the top of their game; all have been doing this since childhood and by the look on their faces are now doing it for fun.

With minimal props they become human trampolines for others to bounce off; stepping stones to be walked on; trapezes to be swung off , and even targets for us to throw balls at in attempts to unbalance them.

Those 8 nondescript performers outdid all expectations; I left feeling like I had done a proper workout, but with a smile as huge as theirs on my face.

Jacqueline’s grandparents lived in Pages Walk, opposite the Guinness Buildings and many is the afternoon she spent there listening to her nan talk about her life, and when the opportunity came Jacqueline put those tales down on paper: ‘I hadn't written a story since I was at school!,’ reveals the new author.

How much of her grandmother has she used in the book: ‘Louisa is pure fiction, not autobiographical,’ she claims. And now, with her inspirational juices flowing Jacqueline reveals, ‘I loved writing Louisa and am now busy writing Part Two, which will hopefully be published in early 2020.’

A

LOST World War One memorial commemorating fallen soldiers from Camberwell College of Art has been lovingly recreated and given pride of place by its artists after being lost during the 1990s, writes Katherine Johnston...

Staff member and former student, Simon Burbidge, approached his colleagues at the art school to help reproduce the monument after being inspired by last year’s armistice centenary events.

The college, which is part of University of the Arts London, exhibited work by one of its war-time students; David Jones last year.

Jones, an artist, illustrator and poet, was born in Brockley and first attended what was then known as ‘Camberwell Art School’ at the age of fourteen.

By nineteen, he had signed up, an experience that would influence much of his life and work – and lead to several breakdowns.

From his time as a private on the Western Front, Jones wrote his most famous work, the epic poem In Parenthesis, first published in 1937, winning praise literary greats like Eliot, Yates and Auden for its modernist take on the personal horror of war and his turn towards Roman Catholicism.

The exhibition got one of the college’s members of staff thinking about the college’s own memorial to the fallen, which he remembered from his own time as a student.

The memorial had been lost during campus changes in the 1990s but Simon, who now works as a printmaking technician at the college and was a BA painting student in 1985, remembered photographing the original while researching icons and iconography for a project.

“We approached several colleagues within Camberwell regarding the memorials' reinstatement and Taslim Martin and Mike Hurley took on the task of reconstructing it,” he explained.

That black and white image was the only image left of the lost plaque – and their entire resource for reproducing it.

Taslim and Mike, who both work within the college’s world renowned ceramics department, began recreating the original using the same materials and processes from that time.

“We went through all the tiny design problems that the original makers must have gone through, look at "FORBES SEMPHILL RA" for example,” said Mike.

“The position of the F - how much agonising went into that, I wonder?”

As the photographed memorial had sustained some damage, with one name in particular only partly legible, the team also sifted through the college’s archives to find his identity – Tooting resident, CE. The finished product has now been placed back in its original home on CBlock, one of the college’s original Victorian buildings.

It will stay as a permanent reminder to the college’s fallen for the next hundred years and beyond, but the stories of the men it names are still something of a mystery without further research into the archives.

It is hoped any relatives will be inspired to get in touch to share their stories - and visit the monument.

“I am obviously incredibly proud and humbled to be a part of the reinstatement,” said Simon.

Art students lovingly restore a lost WWI memorial

“My father and uncle were in Burma during the Second World War, Dad eventually becoming president of the local British Legion.

“II grew up with an intimate understanding of the significance of remembrance.”

Camberwell College of Art first opened on January 10, 1898, as Camberwell School of Art, next to the South London Art Gallery.

The school, established by the London County Council with funding from

philanthropist John Passmore Edwards, first enrolled 198 students, mostly parttime.

Until the Second World War, the school was mostly known for courses for apprentices in the building and printing trades.

In the postwar years, the college began to focus more on Fine Art, becoming ‘Camberwell College of Arts and Crafts’ in 1973 when it expanded into a modern purpose-built block on the same premises.

In 1989 it was renamed Camberwell College of Arts, with its most recent change the £62 million redevelopment held two years ago, in 2017, which included establishing a new gallery, Camberwell Space, on Peckham Road.

absolutely everybody. We’re inclusive and we feel that everybody should be able to come down to a game on a Saturday and enjoy football no matter what their background is. This initiative is just us opening our arms and welcoming everyone through the gates.”

Rob underlined the important role that the club can play in improving the experience of refugees in the local area.

“A lot of them are very new in the country. Here they can experience a part of their local community and genuinely feel like a member of it.

“We’re a club at the centre of our community and it’s right that we highlight the issues that are prevalent in our community. We’ve done it with Red Thread tackling knife crime, and now we’re looking at refugees. There is a large refugee community in Southwark and so it’s right that we highlight what they add to the borough, and support them in finding their feet in Britain.”

“With so many people across the globe forced to abandon their homes

due to conflict and instability, it’s important that football clubs use their platform to send out a clear message: Refugees are welcome here.”

British football clubs have a long and proud tradition of opening their doors to refugees. Back in 1937, a group of child refugees fleeing the Spanish Civil War came to Southampton and went on to play for Saints, Wolves and Coventry in the 1940s and ‘50s.

More recently, former Bolton Wanderers striker Fabrice Muamba, ex-Manchester City forward Nadia Nadim, Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka, Dejan Lovren at Liverpool and Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke have all made their mark on the beautiful game.

Susan Black from The Bike Project emphasised the importance of initiatives such as this for local refugees. “An asylum seeker survives on £37 per week, so if you can give them a bike it’s fantastic. Not only can they get around but it’s good for their mental health and it means they can access vital services.”

At a time when intolerance is sadly

rearing its ugly head in British football, Rob reflected on the role Dulwich can play in correcting that.

He said: “I don’t think we’re in a position where we can comment on other clubs, what we can do is make sure what we do at this club is inclusive of everyone, welcomes everybody, is respectful of different beliefs, religions, ways of life.

“And that is part of being a member of this local community. Of course there’s issues in football at the moment, but what we need to do is make sure that what we’re doing here is of the highest quality, which it is, and hopefully other clubs might follow suit.

I know we are a club where everyone is welcome, and that’s my focus.”

It is undoubtedly a great time to be a follower of Dulwich Hamlet. Their win over Hungerford all but confirmed the club’s survival in their first year in National League South, which must be considered a successful season on the pitch.

This initiative is yet another instance of their exemplary behaviour off it.

Hamlet need one more point

ONLY A dramatic collapse and a series of other results going against them will deny Dulwich Hamlet a second consecutive season in National League South after their superb 3-1 win at home to Hungerford Town at Champion Hill last Saturday.

The majority of another big crowd of 2,841 in Dulwich were thrilled by three first-half goals from Daniel Thompson, Anthony Cook and Connor Hunte.

Gavin Rose’s Hamlet never looked in any danger of letting that lead slip, though Marvel Ekpiteta did pull a goal back for Hungerford with ten minutes left.

But that was never going to spoil the party for the home fans, who are on the brink of being able to celebrate survival in their side’s first season in the sixth tier of English football.

Hamlet are now eight points clear of the Hungerford, who plunged into the last relegation spot with this result, with three games left.

Rose’s side could confirm their place in National League South over Easter weekend, when they travel to Wealdstone on Saturday before facing Woking at home on Monday.

Last week, the club teamed up with local charities The Bike Project and Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers (SDCAS) and the national Football Welcomes campaign, which aims to recognise the value of refugees in Britain through British football.

The official Football Welcomes weekend takes place on the final weekend of the season, but with Hamlet away at Western Super-Mare then, the club decided to host the event last weekend at Champion Hill for the visit of Hungerford Town.

The Bike Project, a charity based in Herne Hill and Deptford, takes secondhand bikes, fixes them up in their workshop and distributes them to refugees. In addition, the charity trains refugee women to learn to ride – a basic enjoyment not afforded women in many countries.

Last Saturday, Champion Hill ran a bike collection in aid of the initiative, with a number of rather impressive bikes donated.

SDCAS seeks to help relieve poverty and distress, and to promote health and further education for asylum seekers and refugees. It does so by providing advice and support to those in need at its day centres in south-east London. On Saturday, 37 refugees from SDCAS were invited to Champion Hill free of charge.

David Rodgers, an avid Dulwich Hamlet supporter and the man responsible for the partnership between the club and The Bike Project, elaborated on how the non-league side became involved with the charities.

“Even going back about five years we’ve done a lot of work with refugees at the club,” he said. “We had a massive collection during the refugee crisis in Calais, and took three huge trucks out there.

“We worked with The Bike Project a few years ago and had a really successful connection. And we hope to do it again in the future.”

Rob Hyneman, Dulwich Hamlet Community Lead, explained how the club’s values match the work of both charities. “As a club, we are open to

FISHER’S PROMOTION hopes were dealt a real blow as their 0-0 draw at home to AFC Croydon left them six points off Corinthian in first with three games left in the SCEFL Premier Division.

Dean Harrison’s side stretched their unbeaten run to seven league games but it doesn’t look like it’s going to be enough with Fisher in third and only one promotion place.

It was the successive defeats to Corinthian and second-place Cray Valley before that run that ultimately look like they will be decisive.

Fisher are realistically now in a battle to finish third, as they are four points off Cray Valley and two ahead of Chatham Town.

The Rotherhithe outfit can still finish top, but they require maximum points and have to hope for major collapses from the two sides above them.

The Fish go to K Sports this Friday, and then will have the chance to cut the gap to the leaders when they host them at St Paul’s on Bank Holiday Monday. Both games kick off at 3pm.

Fisher end their season with a trip to Chatham on April 27.

IF AT first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.

That was not only Millwall’s mantra last Saturday, but could be Tom Elliott’s, too, not just for this game but for the whole season.

Elliott has endured a number of false starts in his Millwall career. Around the turn of the year he was forming a promising partnership with Lee Gregory before a dislocated shoulder against Blackburn sidelined him.

Neil Harris has recently been playing with one striker, Gregory, up front, and Ben Thompson’s performances playing off him have contributed to some impressive collective form.

Elliott, 28, has shipped his fair share of criticism from Lions fans this season, some of it warranted, some harsh.

At Bramall Lane Millwall had little to lose when he came on. That seems to be when he is at his best, when the pressure is off and expectations are lowered. No one would have blamed Elliott had the Blades seen the game out.

Instead he caused havoc in the home defence. Still, Elliott could have been forgiven for thinking it wasn’t going to be his afternoon when his brilliant header from Shane Ferguson’s cross was heading for the top corner before John Egan handled on the line. When Ben Marshall fired his penalty off the crossbar, Elliott didn’t even get an assist to his name.

But Millwall impressively shrugged off that double disappointment and doubled down on their efforts to find an equaliser after Gary Madine's 51stminute strike.

In the last minute of added-time there was one more attack. Marshall crossed from the right and Elliott’s header produced a brilliant save from Dean Henderson. The ball could have gone anywhere but it was probably no coincidence that Jake Cooper was first to it to head in his seventh of the season, in front of the away fans, who rushed down the stand. The centreback leapt over the advertising hoardings and was mobbed along with his team-mates, including goalkeeper David Martin who had suddenly

appeared from the other end of the pitch.

Elliott, Martin, Thompson, Conor McLaughlin – the latter who started for the first time since November in a new role as a right-sided centre-back – have all has setbacks this season but are making key contributions in this relegation battle. Add in Ryan Tunnicliffe and it is some of the lesser lights in the squad who are doing it when the pressure is on. Players such as those are testament to the squad harmony Harris has built, and show

that hard work and a good attitude will find rewards.

And this time, after the concession of so many late goals and dropped points, the Lions’ refusal to give up paid off.

Harris’ side have now put themselves in a position to be safe after the Easter fixtures, if they gain maximum points and others slip up. A tall order to go to Villa Park and win, perhaps, but Millwall have taken points at promotion-chasing Derby, Middlesbrough and now Sheffield United this year, and should have left

season, before their futures are decided in the summer. Both could be available for transfer.

The young Lions finished the campaign with the best defensive record in the South section of the 28-game league, with just 31 goals conceded, seven fewer than table toppers Ipswich.

Lewis White's low drive inside against United almost opened the scoring in the first half, before visiting midfielder Zac Brunt dragged a shot wide from a good position inside the box.

Junior Tiensia and White linked up well on the left flank as the hosts sought a breakthrough, and Onyedinma nearly provided it.

Alexander’s pass, and goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst saved his next effort.

Dewhurst then denied substitute Reuben Duncan, before Jake Young curled just wide of King’s goal from inside the area.

Midfielder Billy Mitchell had the last chance for Nugent’s side late on, but Dewhurst wouldn’t be beaten as he produced a superb save from close range.

Millwall finished sixth in the table.

“If you can’t win games, stay tight at the back and don’t lose them,” Nugent said.

“We’ve defended well this season, and that is the defenders, goalkeepers, and the rest of the

team. If we get shape work done then we use that as a bit of a platform, and we believe that if we keep things tight then there is always a chance of winning the game.

“It’s always a priority that we try and drill into the lads.

“I think it’s been a reasonable season for us. There have been some ups and downs, and we were in the running for the top two promotion places until quite late in the season.

“There have certainly been some positives and plenty of progress to come out of it.”

ELL WHAT a great few weeks we’ve had as traveling Millwall fans.

Who would have thought the police in West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire would actually treat Millwall fans as normal fans.

Over the last few week we’ve been involved in a completely new way of policing football fans in a trial using police liaison officers.

I worked with the Leeds liaison officer and I really think making people aware of what’s going to happen and which pubs will take away fans really helps for a great away day.

If you remember, it was only last year that the West Yorkshire police for the first time in ten years lifted travel restrictions for our fans. So things have really moved forward and I can’t thank them enough for actually believing what I said. You, the fans, helped me prove it, too.

After a lot of hard work put in behind the scenes by Kathryn Gale with the South Yorkshire police, they finally also decided to try the same idea of police liaison officers ahead of the Sheffield United fixture.

Both games worked out really well and both sets of fans provided great feedback on how it worked in making away days even better for our travelling fans.

Massive thanks goes to both West and South Yorkshire police for trialling this brand new method on Millwall fans. As we all know, our games, for whatever reason, are classed as high-risk games.

Our last few home games are really important and we need to back the team fully at home and become that Twelfth Man more than ever before. We’ve seen so often this season how much of a formidable atmosphere The Den makes when it’s full – it’s a very intimidating place to come as an away team.

Meanwhile, I am fully aware of the train problems for the last game of the

season (12.30pm kick-off at Wigan) and as I am writing this I am currently speaking with the club about what can be done for travelling fans. ***** I would like to put on record my thanks to Aaron Paul for the support he gave me and Millwall after all the negative press the club got following the Everton game.

Also to the guys from The Real Millwall fan show for leaving a Londonbased radio station after some negative coverage. It was really good to actually see people with clear morals and having the conviction to stand by those morals when it could have damaged their own show. Their show is a great listen and it’s released every Friday as a podcast at 9pm. ***** My last bit is a plug for a charity game I am involved in organising for Sunday, May 26. A number of ex-Millwall players will be returning to The Den. YouTube stars F2 Freestylers will take part in the match which is in aid of Childline and SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity For the last six years, the F2 Freestylers

have been wowing their fans with their impressive and sometimes baffling football tricks via their YouTube and social media channels.

Now Jeremy Lynch and Billy Wingrove have set themselves a new goal: to raise thousands of pounds for Childline and SSAFA. The internet stars who head up the F2 Football Club made up of influencers, celebrities, ex-footballers and up-andcoming talent will take to the pitch against the London Lions for the Wonderwall Cup. Among the F2 Football Club players confirmed for the game are celebrity personal trainer and social influencer, Bradley Simmonds, Love Island 2018 contestant, Jack Fowler, and comedian ManlikeHaks, plus F2 Tekkz after his recent win on Sky Sports in the Premier League Fifa tournament.

Proceeds from the match will be split 50/50 between the F2 Freestylers’ chosen charity Childline and the London Lions’ chosen charity SSAFA. “Mental health is the number one reason children and young people contact Childline and as someone who battled with anxiety and depression in their 20s that really struck a chord with me,” John Cameron, Head of Childline, said.

“It was tough as an adult coping with that so I can only imagine what it must be like for a child or young person.

Thankfully Childline’s volunteer counsellors are there for them during their darkest hour 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“The money raised will help us to continue to provide this crucial service which is quite literally a lifeline to children and young people during times when they feel they have nowhere else to turn.”

BRENTFORD’S PROCESS for recruiting is a model for other clubs, according to Neil Harris, as his side get ready to face their London rivals on Friday.

The Bees sold centre-back Chris Mepham to Bournemouth for £12million in January after taking him from Chelsea as a teenager.

Brentford will make a huge profit on Neal Maupay, whom they signed from St Etienne in France for £1.6million in 2017, if they sell him in the summer. The club have put a £15million price tag on the striker.

Thomas Frank’s side won’t finish in the top six and can’t be relegated.

“They’ve been a little bit inconsistent,” Harris said. “They have superb players. In so many ways they are a great model how to build a club

“They sell players on for a lot of money. We’re aware of their players and the press links concerning players that might be sold in the summer.

“It’s just another test for us at this level, it’s no different to what we face most weeks. It’s no different to what we faced against West Brom and the quality of the squad they have, or against QPR, Sheffield

United. Every team at this level has ability.

“It’s going to be a tough challenge for us but one we’ll be prepared for.”

Harris has to decide whether to stick with 3-5-2, against Brentford’s 3-4-3, or revert to four at the back, the default formation at home.

Harris brought Shane Ferguson straight back into the side after his red card against Brighton in the FA Cup ruled him out for three games.

The Lions boss said at the time that Ferguson would face “severe punishment”, but this week highlighted what the Northern Ireland international brings to the side.

“It was out of character, yes,” Harris said about the dismissal. “A winning mentality and character?

Yes, he certainly has that.

“He’s made an error but he’s redeemed himself over and over again this season, so it’s not a major

issue. At this football club I want players who have an edge and a personality. Fergie’s certainly got that.”

Millwall travel to Villa Park to take on promotion challengers Aston Villa next Monday.

IT MIGHT not appear a hugely significant milestone, but in the context of all the chopping and changing of starting line-ups at Millwall this season it’s certainly an impressive achievement.

When Jake Cooper crossed the white line at Bramall Lane last weekend and the referee’s whistle sounded, he moved to 30th on the all-time Millwall list for consecutive league starts, with 70.

It nudged him above former Lions goalkeeper Kasey Keller, though the centre-back still has some way to go to catch Barry Kitchener.

That legendary Lion made 244 consecutive league starts between April 1967 and February 1973. If Cooper manages to remain injury-free, suspension-free and maintains his form, he will be due to eclipse Kitchener in the 2022-23 season.

Cooper could be on an even longer run but for a red card at Sheffield Wednesday in October 2017 which meant a one-game ban.

The former Reading defender has started every league game since Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on November 17, 2017.

“I didn’t know that,” Cooper admitted

to the News this week. “That’s really nice. I work hard on keeping myself fit and looking after my body.

“To be able to do that is massive for me at my age, to get as much experience as possible is key in my development.

“I’ve had a few moments this season, definitely, when I haven’t felt great or had little niggles. I’ve just had to deal with it and get myself right, be strong mentally.

“I focus on different objectives to make sure I get through games as well as I can.”

One list Cooper is top of is most goal involvements for a centre-back in the top four divisions of English football this season.

His equaliser against Sheffield United was his seventh goal of the season, to go with seven assists.

He celebrated his last-gasp leveller by leaping into the away end where he was engulfed in a mass of Millwall fans.

“It’s nice to contribute to goals,” he continued. “I haven’t had an assist for a while now but I’m sure I can get back to that. It’s good to provide crucial moments like Saturday. Some of the goals I’ve scored and the assists have come at crucial moments and I want a few more before the end of the season.”

“From there I think it was unconscious behaviour with all the excitement going through me. It’s just about enjoying moments like that because you don’t know how many you’re going to have in your career. I certainly enjoyed it.

“Hopefully the fans are alright, there was a lot of contact in there! But it was nice to have that moment with them.

They travelled all that way to support us.”

It looked like Millwall’s chance of getting something from the game had gone, when Cooper saw an effort saved

by Dean Henderson and then John Egan prevented Tom Elliott’s header finding the top corner when he handled.

“I thought that was it when I had that chance,” Cooper said. “Aiden [O’Brien] just put me off a little bit, I think. It was a good chance but thankfully Big T was making a nuisance of himself and that gave me a bit more space and freed me up for the crucial moment.

“I feel a bit gutted for him because he should definitely have had a goal. It was one of the best headers I’ve ever seen, it was incredible. He certainly deserved a goal for it.

“He came on and made a massive impact which was great for him and it was good to see him doing that.”

Cooper played in a different position last weekend, on the left side of a back

three. Neil Harris has changed Millwall’s set-up a number of times in the last two months – playing with a lone striker supported by an advanced midfielder; one anchor midfielder with two in front; three central midfielders in a 3-5-2 with a full-back in central defence – and Cooper revealed the squad are enjoying the different challenges.

“I haven’t played there since my early days at Reading,” he said. “I was just more excited to try and do something different, I was taking throw-ins and things like that.

“Quite a few of the lads were excited to try something new in a different test.

I certainly relish the challenge playing against the wider players.

“On Saturday alone the gaffer must have changed the shape about three or four times. They had to change shape early in the game to combat us, QPR changed to combat us. It’s credit to the manager for how he’s set the team up, he’s been brave in playing people in different positions.

“Because I was in that left-sided position I was getting a lot of the messages from the manager and the staff. I was the one to relay the messages to the boys and make sure we were in the correct shape. It was simple enough for me to jog over and speak to one of the coaches which I had to do a couple of times to make sure we were doing the right things. We had to

change quickly when we made subs but we coped with it well.

“Players at this club are capable of playing in different positions. It has been working over the last few weeks and we’ve enjoyed it.”

With five games to go, the Lions are dealing with a different kind of pressure for the first time in four seasons, trying to stay in a division rather than get out of it by winning promotion.

“We know what sort of club we are, we know there’s going to be pressure like this,” Cooper said. “We have to deal with that but I think having the players with the mentality to do that is great. We’re happy with the position we’re in and confident after the run of performances we’ve had.

“There was definitely less pressure on us last year. It’s of course a different test and it’s a great one to be involved in. We’ve got to stand up now and be counted.

“What a great challenge for all of us to stay in this league. That’s the test we’ve got to pass.

“If we can carry on this form and build on the last few games with the confidence and belief that we have then we’ll have no trouble in the last few weeks.

“We’re looking forward to Brentford on Friday and I’m sure we’ll see this season out and build from the summer.”

NEIL HARRIS admitted there is pressure on him to guide Millwall to safety – but said he wouldn’t swap it for anything else.

The Lions are two points above the relegation zone with five games left as they aim for a third straight season in the second tier.

Relegation would have a big effect on the make-up of the squad, and likely lead to major summer rebuilding.

Harris said there was intense pressure on Millwall go win promotion from League One in 2016-17. The club had one of the biggest budgets in the division, and achieved a Championship place at the second attempt after only clinching their play-off place in the final five minutes of the regular season.

In 2017-18 Millwall quickly adjusted to life in the Championship but were closer to the relegation zone at Christmas before an incredible surge took them to within three points of finishing sixth.

Harris has had to contend with different challenges in this campaign, from seeing George Saville go to Middlesbrough after the season had started to losing key players to injury.

Harris responded to a question this week about whether he feels a different kind of pressure this season, and how he copes with it.

“It’s probably slightly different in that you’re near the bottom of the league compared to the top,” Harris said.

“The year we got promoted I felt it was a season that we good success in the FA Cup, ups and downs in the league, but when we got towards the end of the season we should have got promoted. So there was huge pressure on that.

“Last year the pressure was to try to stay in the division, before we steamrolled the second half of the season to take that pressure away.

“This year the expectation levels rose and we weren’t able to steamroll through.

“Ben’s got probably the best technique of anyone at the club. He

missed a penalty but then showed his quality to put the ball in for the equalising goal. That shows his strength of character.

“We knew how difficult it would be to play there, and the atmosphere was unbelievable.

“We worked hard preparing for them. We changed formation to match them up and I thought the lads were brilliant. We deserved at least a point from the game.

“They’re so good at attacking, their wing-backs were threats getting forward so it was just about ensuring we had enough behind the ball and breaking when we had the chance.

“The way we took our goal at the end was brilliant. Having the support of the fans was so important as well and you could see how much is meant to everyone.”

Ferguson also had praise for his

Northern Ireland international teammate Conor McLaughlin, who played on the right side of a three-man defence, his first appearance since November after a number of injury problems.

“He’s done brilliantly. He’s played that position a couple of time for Northern Ireland. He’s steady, you know what you’re going to get from him in every game,” Ferguson said.

“He hadn’t played in a long time so to come into a game like that and do as well as he did shows how professional he is, how well he’s looked after himself.

“You can trust him in any game.

He’s had injury frustrations, every time he was so close to coming back he got another one. But credit to him for getting back in and playing a massive part on Saturday. It should do his confidence the world of good.”

SHANE FERGUSON won’t be wrestling a team-mate on the pitch to take a penalty – and praised Ben Marshall for his character after his spot-kick miss at Sheffield United last weekend.

Marshall smacked his effort off the bar after John Egan had used his hand to keep out Tom Elliott’s header. But Marshall made amends by crossing in the last minute of added-time leading to Jake Cooper rescuing a point for his side.

Marshall had been successful from twelve yards at Leeds, and Ferguson insisted he had full “trust” in his team-mate.

The season ticks relentlessly on as Millwall face Brentford and Aston Villa in four days over the Easter weekend.

Ferguson insisted they could handle the pressure of a relegation fight.

He said: “The lads are always smiling. We know what’s at stake.

There is pressure, but the manager is keeping everyone calm before games. He wants us to go out and enjoy ourselves and try to pick up results.

“We just have to worry about ourselves. It’s in our hands, we just have to keep doing what we’re doing and sticking together.

“We’re looking forward to the weekend. There will be a great atmosphere at The Den. We’re going to be doing a lot of work on Brentford trying to pick up three points.”

SHANE FERGUSON has admitted his red card against Brighton caused him “sleepless nights” – but a chat with Neil Harris helped him move on.

Millwall were deprived one of their main penalty takers when Ferguson was sent off for a stamp on Lewis Dunk in the last minute of normal time in the quarter-final tie. It was his first sendingoff in 232 games in senior club football.

Ferguson revealed he didn’t speak to any of his team-mates or manager Harris after the game as he had to immediately leave The Den for international duty with Northern Ireland.

Ferguson served a three-match ban for violent conduct, and it wasn’t until his return after Northern Ireland’s fixtures that he spoke face-to-face with Harris.

“I just made a massive mistake,” Ferguson admitted. “It looks really bad on camera but I didn’t mean it. I was trying to slow the play down and didn’t mean to catch him like that. I watched it back, it wasn’t great

“I’ve had sleepless nights from it, it’s been tough. I went away on international duty straightaway.

“We were so close to getting a result and then I could have taken that penalty instead of Coops. He shouldn’t have been in that situation. Who knows, I could have scored, I could have missed.

We’ll never know that.

“There was a bit of banter because the lads know I’m not like that. When I went away with Northern Ireland the boys there were giving me stick.

“The lads were brilliant in the games I missed so that helped.

“Me and the manager had a talk and he knows I’m not like that, that I made a

mistake. We had a good talk after I got back from international duty. I hadn’t spoken to him after the game because I had to shoot straight off. I didn’t get to see anyone.

“The manager was saying he was more disappointed over the games I was going to miss.

“He could probably see how disappointed I was. But things were fine and it was great to go straight back into the side last Saturday and help the lads.

“The fans have been great with me.

They probably knew that’s not my game.

“It’s something I’ll learn from and move on.”

Boss wants Den buzzing for Bees

NEIL HARRIS wants a bumper Easter crowd at The Den for Friday’s clash with London rivals Brentford.

Millwall are aiming for the Bank Holiday wins that could confirm their safety this season, with a trip to Aston Villa on Monday following the Bees fixture.

Harris is looking forward to a “great weekend of football”.

“Brentford are a little bit like ourselves, a little bit unfashionable as a club,” Harris said. “You don’t know what you’re going to get because they’re not in a relegation fight and they’re not in the promotion mix.

“They can maybe play with some freedom, you just don’t know what you’re going to get at this stage of the season.

“We have to focus on ourselves and the good form we’re in.

Brentford will have a lot of possession and we need the fans get behind us, make it uncomfortable for Brentford, and keep the boys going.

“What a great weekend of football. The Den and a big crowd in good weather Friday and then we go to Villa Park on Monday. It’s going to be a huge crowd there, a great atmosphere and one for the fans to enjoy.

“We’ve got as much to play for at this stage of the season as anybody else in the division. The importance of the games is no different to the ones involving sides going for the top two.

“We want an achievement this season, and that’s staying in the division.

“I want a big crowd on Friday.”
