NEIL COYLE criticised his own party's policy of ending freedom of movement this week, after the leadership confirmed Labour's stance had not changed despite whipping its MPs to vote in favour of 'Common Market 2.0' in the latest series of Brexit indicative votes.

As widely reported, Labour has confirmed that its official party policy remains an end to freedom of movement after Brexit, and replace with 'reasonable management of migration'.

But after MPs were encouraged to back the option to stay in the single market in parliament's indicative votes, it had been hoped the party was changing its approach.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, Neil Coyle, a firm Remainer, told the News: "There are almost 130,000 people who live in my constituency, and over 300,000 of us in Southwark.

"All of us lose out by the ending of freedom of movement.

"Every single one of us gets poorer and has fewer opportunities to holiday, work, study, live or even fall in love in, or with, 27 other countries.

"No one can pretend to me that is a good thing."

members who have signed a statement calling on Corbyn to backtrack.

The group argue migrants had become the scapegoats for "an unaccountable elite who have run the economy in their own narrow interests", explaining: "A system of free movement is the best way to protect and advance the interests of all workers, by giving everyone the right to work legally, join a union and stand up to their boss without fear of deportation or destitution.

"Curtailing those rights, or limiting migrants’ access to public services and

benefits, will make it easier for unscrupulous employers to hyper-exploit migrant labour, which in turn undermines the rights and conditions of all workers."

As the News has reported, there are concerns Brexit is already worsening staff shortages in the NHS in Southwark. One in five midwives at Guy's and St Thomas' is from the EU. The council is so concerned about the impact of Brexit on key workers and Southwark's economy, it has set up a £2 million fund to help prepare for No Deal.

Anood Al-Samerai, Southwark Liberal Democrat Council group leader, said the policy was proof Labour's leadership was pro-Brexit.

"For all the bluster and boasts about how progressive they are, the indisputable fact of the matter is that Labour is officially a proBrexit, anti-immigrant party," she said.

"Britain in general, and Southwark especially, has been built by those who chose to move here and build lives, families and communities, making us all better off than we would otherwise be."

but concedes many depend on successful lobbying of central government and business.

According to its own data, the council says it has already reduced its carbon footprint by 36.7 per cent since 2010.

Southwark has won plaudits for building new water fountains to cut plastic pollution, a focus on tackling toxic air pollution especially around schools, and putting new electric car charging points in the borough.

But how the council can accelerate its targets by two decades is still unclear and will require a groundswell of support.

Cllr Livingstone said: “The council is committed to doing all it can to address both

climate change and carbon neutrality.

"With two-thirds of Southwark’s residents living less than ten metres above sea level, we are particularly vulnerable to climate change.

“We are already working to address this with a number of new measures including: idling fines for drivers who leave their engines running while static, road closures around schools to improve air quality, working to increase our recycling rate, which is the best in inner London, protecting Southwark’s biodiversity, helping more residents to walk and cycle rather than using their car, and more.

"But our decision last week recognises that

there is much more that we need to do.

“However, climate change and carbon emission do not respect boundaries, this means that necessary, significant changes need to come from central government and big business.

“We recognise that we don’t have all the answers, which is why we’re organising a climate Change Summit for residents, local groups and other stakeholders this summer.

"Together, we will develop and deliver our plan.”

This week, one of London's key city-wide initiatives to tackle emissions came into force - the ultra-low emissions zone, with Southwark on its periphery.

ELECTRIC SPOKELESS penny farthings could soon be the commuter bike of choice under designs unveiled by a pair of London South Bank University (LSBU) graduates.

LSBU GRADUATES’ PENNY FARTHING THE ‘COMMUTER BIKE OF THE FUTURE’ The ‘penny farthing’ style bike would see the rear wheel being able to fold inside the larger front wheel, meaning it should take up less room than other foldable bikes on the market.

The concept – reportedly the world’s first electric spokeless bike according to its inventors - also would avoid grease and oil.

One of its designers, Alan Rallings, of Cyclopic, said: “It’s all about the storage capabilities, people will be able to store it at home under a bed, there’s no oil and grease, it is very low maintenance.”

Mr Rallings first came up with the idea while a student at South Bank, where he graduated as a mature student in 2017.

He had previously worked on large-

scale engineering projects at British Areospace before teaming up to develop the futuristic penny farthing with fellow LSBU graduate, Rishi Haraniya.

Under current plans, publicly shown at a conference in Westminster last week, the bike would be powered by an electric drive at a top speed of 15.5mph, while an LCD screen would show stats like

distance travelled and heart rate.

Prototypes of the Cyclopic bike are currently being developed. “We’re hoping to get a rideable prototype by the end of the summer,” said Mr Rallings.

“Hopefully it’s futuristic,” he added.

“It’s sort of a penny farthing, it’s a strange mix of an old fashioned idea and new technology.”

A BERMONDSEY GP surgery has been slapped with the worst possible rating – ‘Inadequate’ – by the care watchdog, only six months after being placed into special measures.

Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice, on Old Jamaica Road, was given the overall rating on Wednesday, April 3, after inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) carried out an inspection of the surgery in January.

As a result of a previous inspection in July 2018, regulators had forced the practice to suspend surgical procedures for three months because it had not been getting consent in the way required under law.

In the latest round of inspections, the watchdog found that improvements had been made to addresses care failings – but it added it had “ongoing concerns” about the sustainability of the changes.

The practice is led by Dr Shabir Bhatti.

Antony Hall, who is the CQC’s Head of Inspection for Primary Medical Services in London, said: “Dr Shabir Bhatti’s practice will remain in special measures.

“The service will be kept under review and if needed could be escalated to further enforcement action.

“Patients registered with practices being placed into special measures should be aware that support is offered

by NHS England and the Royal College of GPs to ensure that there are no immediate risks to patient safety whilst improvements are being made.”

In a report detailing what it found during its visit, CQC inspectors said it had rated the practice ‘requires improvement’ in the safe, effective and caring categories.

But it added it gave it an inadequate rating overall because of concerns about how well-led and responsive the service was.

Steps the GP surgery should take included training and appraisals being completed appropriately and appropriate arrangements being put in place for infection control, the CQC said.

The News contacted the practice for comment, but did not receive a response before publication.

The news comes after a string of eight Southwark GP practices run by the Nexus Health Group were also rated inadequate.

Nexus merged the previously independent Princess Street Group Practice in Elephant and Castle, with Surrey Docks Health Centre, Aylesbury Medical Centre, The Dun Cow Surgery, Commercial Way Surgery, Decima Street Surgery, Artesian Health Centre, and Manor Place Surgery in 2016.

In an updated inspection on March 27, inspectors found the group was still failing to provide safe treatment and care, although improvements had been made.

Union asks to set up foodbank at hospital trust after pay day change EXCLUSIVE

A UNION has asked permission to set up a food bank for outsourced staff at a Southwark NHS Trust in a row over pay date changes.

The staff are employed by ISS, which holds a variety of portering, cleaning and security contracts across three hospitals in south London including at South London and the Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM).

A new fortnightly pay cycle beginning May 9 will mean staff will wait up to a week longer for their pay than they do normally.

ISS told the News it would offer interest-free loans to staff that may struggle during the first month, and that it would not withhold any money payable to its employees.

It added that it “strongly believes” the changes would benefit employees as it would give more clarity on what and when wages would be paid.

However, Helen O’Connor, GMB regional organizer, accused the company of treating its members like “second class NHS workers.”

“It is beyond belief that low paid workers can be expected to pay back loans in excess of £300 a month of their own wages so that a multi-million-pound global company like ISS can change their pay cycles,” she said.

The News has also contacted UNISON

union which also has a branch at the Trust for comment regarding the payroll changes for ISS staff.

A letter sent to the South London and Maudsley Trust CEO by the GMB’s organisation officer, Mick Butler, called on the Trust to set up hardship payments for ISS staff – and if not, to allow a food bank to be set up in the Trust’s hospitals.

A Trust spokesperson declined to say whether it would allow a food bank to be set up and said: “We are speaking to ISS toKatherine understand the impact on staff By Johnston employed by ISS and to see how the trust katherine@southwarknews.co.uk can best support them.”

GMB has pledged to organise a day of action over the move in south London hospitals on Thursday, April 11 over the changes, but the protest is not expected to take place at South London and the Maudsley.

In a lengthy statement, an ISS spokesperson said it was aware the first month would see staff waiting longer for pay but that the changes were necessary.

“We appreciate the concern employees may have. We are therefore offering all impacted employees interest-free loans to help smooth the wait and to ensure that individuals have the financial support they need,” the spokesperson said.

“Whilst we are aware that the employees will be embarking upon change, we are providing a full range of support to ease their concerns and any impacts of the change, and we continue to provide opportunities for employees to discuss any issues with us.”

OVER £7,000 has been raised at a boxing match for a Kennington-based charity which uses sport to support marginalised young people at risk of joining gangs.

Fight 4 Change, based on Beaufoy Walk, held the ‘Pound4Pound’ white collar boxing event at the Grange City Hotel on Friday, April 5 with around 170 people attending.

Funds raised at the event, which saw lawyers sparring with policemen for charity, will go towards intervention programmes for young people in innercity areas including Southwark.

“Basically we use a sport to engage to engage young people,” explained Adam Martin, a youth

project manager at the charity.

“We get as many males as females, and a lot of young people from the local area around Kennington, from the estates.”

“Every penny goes towards our programmes. The more we can get, the more people we can help.”

“They’re young people that want to do better for themselves,” Mr Martin, who works several days a week at pupil referral unit in Camberwell added.

Actor Dean Gaffney (pictured), best known for his role as Eastender’s Robbie Jackson, was a special guest for the night, while former professional boxer Glenn McCrory was a guest referee.

Fellow Eastenders star Howard Antony, who played the character of Alan Jackson, also attended, as did mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey.

The ULEZ zone, introduced on Monday, means that anyone with a vehicle which does not meet new stringent low emissions standards will have to fork out a £12.50 charge – on top of the congestion charge.

Mayor Sadiq Khan has introduced a scrappage fund to help ease the transition, with £48million pledged to help small businesses and charities move to a ULEZ-compliant car.

Some have already been stung by the new strict rules.

A report by King’s College London showed that almost 10,000 people die in the capital prematurely each year due to toxic air.

Pollution has also been shown to stunt children’s lung development, according to The British Lung Foundation.

Speaking last month, Florence Eshalomi, London assembly member for Southwark and Lambeth, said: “The introduction of the ultra low emission zone is an absolutely necessary step to drastically clean up London’s toxic air.

“If stringent action isn’t taken, we will continue to see air pollution contribute towards the stunting of children’s lung development and the premature death of almost 10,000 Londoners- mostly in the capital’s poorest communities.”

The zone is due to be extended by

October 2021 to cover the area bounded by the north and south circular roads.

The UK Homes 4 Heroes’ vehicle, dubbed ‘Hero 4’, does not meet lowemissions standards required by ULEZ which comes into force on Monday, meaning the charity would be forced to pay nearly £25 a day for their outreach work for homeless ex-squaddies in central London.

The charity’s founder, Jimmy Jukes, told the News: “We’re up the swanee without a paddle to be honest with you.

“We’re in-and-out of central London on a daily basis, we could be paying up to £150 a week. “[ULEZ] It’s massive for us, really. Our boys are more important than emissions.”

Instead of forking out the combined daily ULEZ and congestion charges, the charity has waved goodbye to the vehicle – but warns it might not be able to continue the outreach work in London unless it raises the money for a ULEZcompliant car.

Now it has started a £15,000 GoFundMe page for a vehicle which does meet the emissions standards to carry on the outreach work.

“I feel a bit embarrassed, but we can’t afford to pay fifteen grand out of what little we’ve got,” said Mr Jukes who was awarded an MBE for his services to the homeless.

“People don’t raise money for us to get new vehicles, they raise it so we can help our boys and girls who fought for us. But we’re going to carry on doing what we do, feeding our homeless.”

Nearly £1,000 had been raised towards a new vehicle so far as the News went to press. The crowd-funder was set up on Wednesday April 3.

Mr Jukes – who is also a ‘Pearly King’ of Southwark – founded the charity in 2010, after his friend came back from serving in Iraq and was unable to find housing.

His friend, who he named as a rifleman called Matt, was involved in an explosion after his patrol car hit an IED

in 2007. When he left service in 2009, Matt found himself homeless for family reasons, said Jimmy.

“We clothe them, we help them get housing, we feed them. We’re not a charity that sits on its backside,” Mr Jukes added.

He estimates the charity has fed tens of thousands of homeless people since it was first started.

Cars which do not meet emissions standards face an average daily charge of £12.50, on top of the congestion charge, inside the ULEZ. Some vehicles are exempt, but there is no specific exemption for vehicles used for charitable purposes.

Alex Williams, Director of City Planning at TfL, vowed to get in contact with UK Homes for Heroes to offer support, saying their work is “integral” to helping rough sleepers.

“We recognise that charities like UK

Homes 4 Heroes are integral to helping rough sleepers across London and we will contact them to offer them further advice and support,” he said.

“Research shows that London’s dirty air disproportionately affects the most vulnerable and results in thousands of premature deaths every year. The Ultra Low Emission Zone is essential to help change that. We have worked alongside many charities to support their ULEZ preparations and to help them as they clean up their fleets.”

He added that the Mayor has introduced a £23million van scrappage scheme ahead of ULEZ coming into force to help organisations make the changes needed.

A ROTHERHITHE-BASED veterans’ charity has been forced to give up its outreach vehicle used to feed homeless ex-soldiers because of the Ultra-Low Emissions Zone, (ULEZ).

CARGO BIKES DRAFTED IN BUSINESSES AND organisations at London Bridge are beginning deliveries using cargo bikes as the Mayor’s ultra low emissions zone comes into force.

Bikes for Business aims to get fifteen per cent of businesses in central London to use the bike deliveries instead of vehicles in a bid to achieve ambitious clean air targets.

Among those signed up is Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust, which said it will trial the cargo bike deliveries inside the ULEZ across its hospitals and community sites for medical supplies.

“With a cycle path on our

doorstep, we are looking to trial cargo bikes in partnership with our pathology provider, Viapath,” said David Lawson, of the Trust.

“This is part of a wider consolidation strategy to design out 90% of freight deliveries into the Trust to improve air quality across the communities that we serve.”

The scheme is the brainchild of Team London Bridge, the business improvement district for the area.

Its chief executive Nadia Broccardo said: “From groceries to medical supplies, cargo bikes can help businesses cut costs and journey times, as well as pollution that is blighting life in London.”

ULTRA-LOW EMISSIONS VEHICLES HAVE TRIPLED IN SOUTHWARK THE NUMBER of green ultralow emissions vehicles have tripled in Southwark in three years, according to newly released research.

The analysis of Department of Transport data by GoCompare found that Southwark had three times as many low-polluting cars in 2018 when compared to 2015.

However, Southwark was far outranked by outer London’s Merton, which saw a twelve-fold increase in the same period.

The study also found our borough had the tenth highest

proportion of ultra-low emissions vehicles as a share of all vehicles in London boroughs, at nearly 92 of them in every 10,000 vehicles.

The government defines ULEVs as vehicles with fully electric power, and cars and vans with tail-pipe emissions below 75 g/km of CO2.

It has a target of 50 to 70 per cent of new car sales to be ultralow emission by 2030.

In total, only one in every 212 vehicles on UK roads are ULEVs, according to the research.

SECOND-HAND BIKES will be collected at Dulwich Hamlet's home game this weekend, repaired and then donated to refugees and asylum seekers settling in London.

The Bike Project, a charity based at Denmark Hill, aims to help refugees get out and about to find work and get to know their new home without having to pay for costly transport.

The club has a long history of supporting refugees and asylum seekers, with its community lead Rob Hyneman telling the News: "Dulwich Hamlet prides itself on being the centre point of the community and it is truly a club that welcomes all.

"We are proud to be supporting the Football Welcomes campaign by linking up with The Bike Project.

"This weekend is not just about us saying refugees are welcome at our club; everyone is welcome at Dulwich Hamlet and that is what makes our club so special."

The day sees the club join many across the country supporting Amnesty International's 'Football Welcomes' initiative, which celebrates the contribution refugees have made to professional football throughout its history.

Clubs who opened their doors to refugees include Saints, Wolves and Coventry who saw refugees fleeing the Spanish Civil War in 1937 join their ranks throughout the ‘40s and ‘50s.

Others include Bolton Wanderers striker Fabrice Muamba, exManchester City forward Nadia Nadim, Arsenal's Granit Xhaka, Liverpool's Dejan Lovren and Crystal Palace's Christian Beneteke.

HOLIDAY SCHEME LEFT IN LIMBO EXCLUSIVE

AN EASTER holiday scheme giving autistic and some of the borough’s most profoundly disabled children and young adults access to sports will not be held for the first time in seven years, after its organisers said they unable to confirm funding from Southwark Council.

Put on by the PE and Schools Sports Network at Bacon’s College and funded

by Southwark Council as part of its social care services, the holiday scheme the largest of its kind in London and only one of its kind in Southwark.

Manager Glyn Davies who runs a weekly Saturday club for 85 people, says the holiday schemes cater for around 40 children and young people, at a total cost of around £100 per young person per day – including those with the most serious disabilities.

He claims the last few years have seen the council become increasingly last minute when deciding whether or not to fund the Easter and summer programmes.

This year after a ‘total breakdown in communication’ from the council, after previously being assured of their support, he has been cancel at short notice.

Glyn and his team put in months of preparation to book off-site activities from bowling, trampolining, swimming, football, gymnastics and kayaking, and catering with a team of 25 specialist staff.

But without confirmation, he has been left unable to assure suppliers they will be paid.

“The provision has gone from being sketchy, last minute to now nonexistent, with all the agencies that are supposed to help fund it passing the buck and not informing parents or carers of their decisions.”

“We have built up a long relationship over the years with many of the people to come to the Easter scheme,” Mr Davies told the News.

“It is just a shame, because if they do not have the funding it would have been good to admit that and not just ignore all the emails.

“No one replied when I got in touch with them to say it was now so late in the day that I had no option but to cancel.”

He says the delays are nothing new, claiming he didn’t receive the payment from Southwark for last year’s Easter scheme until November.

Fifty-nine-year-old Leslyn Alatishe, whose autistic son, Debo, aged 21, has attended the scheme since he was eleven, said when it came to funding, the council and its partners kept ‘passing the buck’.

The 59-year-old retired nurse from Rotherhithe said: “This situation has been a constant problem for at least the last three years.

“The provision has gone from being sketchy, last minute to now non-existent, with all the agencies that are supposed to help fund it passing the buck and not

informing parents or carers of their decisions.

“This has resulted in most of the young people either staying at home all day or having to access limited provisions in other boroughs. That's if they know about it.”

She says the scheme is particularly important because it caters for older children, with no other holiday services available for the over-sixteens.

As the News reported last week, parliament’s human rights committee, chaired by Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman, has launched an inquiry into the national scandal of autistic adults and children kept in secure in-patient units and their use of physical restraints in the absence of appropriate care in the community after funding cuts.

Holiday schemes, like the one at Bacon’s College, are a vital part of building relationships and interacting with the outside world.

“If you are over 25 there is nothing out there, so we are trying to get him to a point where he can work somewhere doing something,” says Mrs Alatishe, whose son

wants to be a chef.

“A lot of autistic people end up in mental health hospitals.

“We need two things. Employers who are willing to take people like him on with jobs as simple or complicated as they need to be.

“And, for the ones who are too disabled to work, we need centres where they can go and be stimulated.”

Without the Easter scheme going ahead, she has used more of her weekly care allowance to make sure Debo has the right care and plenty of activities to look forward to ahead.

Nichola Still, a single mother to Louie, who is autistic and epileptic, said she was

devastated by the cancellation as the scheme is the only place her son is able to join in with others his age.

“This is the only place Louie goes and participates. This will make things so hard for me and I am devastated,” she told the News.

Lucky Cullen, Labour youth officer for Neil Coyle’s Bermondsey and Old Southwark’s constituency party, said her seventeen-year-old sister (pictured) , who has Down’s syndrome, was also let down by the council’s decision.

“The scheme offers a safe place for our young people where they have access to sports and opportunities which not only promotes social inclusion and wellbeing but combats isolation,” she said.

Southwark Council said it was investigating the claims made in this article, with councillor Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, schools and adult care saying she wanted to be clear that its funding promise had not been reneged.

“I am sorry that this unwelcome situation has occurred and we are still working to resolve it in the best interests of the young people and families affected,” she said.

“We have managed to find alternative provision for all but three families and we are working hard to ensure that everyone can attend suitable alternative provision.

“I empathise completely with the young people and their parents who had been expecting to attend this group.

“I want to reassure parents and PE that we are investigating this very issue and looking into what happened with regard to communications between the council and London PE.”

First female president at the Royal College

A GUY’S and St Thomas’ doctor has been elected as the first female president of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine.

Dr Katherine Henderson, a consultant in emergency medicine at St Thomas’, will formally take up the post in October.

“I am delighted and honoured to have been elected by the fellows of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine,” she said.

“It is a huge privilege to become RCEM’s next President.”

The Trust said Dr Henderson had been “instrumental” in redeveloping the new emergency department at St Thomas’ which was officially opened by Princess Anne last year.

The A&E sees around 420 patients a day or 150,000 a year.

Dr Henderson, who has been an emergency medicine consultant for over twenty years, will continue to work at the Trust while she serves her three year term.

She has been at the hospital since 2006.

POLICE ARE appealing for information after a teenager was nearly killed in a “savage” knife attack in Bermondsey’s Grange Road.

The 17-year-old was found with multiple stab wounds at the junction of Alscot Road at 11.15pm on February 23 after being attacked by three males.

He was rushed to hospital in a lifethreatening condition before being discharged two weeks later.

Officers now believe that the attackers attended a birthday party that evening at Setchell and Longfield Hall in Alscot Way.

POLICE RE-APPEAL AFTER TEENAGER WAS NEARLY KILLED IN ‘SAVAGE’ KNIFE ATTACK A large crowd of people also gathered on Grange Road at the time of the attack, said police.

Detective Constable Sascha Eady from Central South Command Unit CID, leading the investigation, said it was a “savage attack” which left the 17-year-old victim in a “serious” condition.

“I am appealing to anyone who took pictures or filmed the events to come forward and speak to police,” said DC Eady.

“It is just by sheer luck that this attack did not have fatal consequences and those responsible need to be held to account.”

Three boys have been arrested on suspicion of GBH in connection with

the near-fatal stabbing, two aged 15 and one aged 14.

A fourteen-year-old was treated for a non-life-threatening “stab injury” in the days following the attack.

MILLIONS OF pounds of lottery grants have been invested in Southwark since it began almost 25 years ago.

Around £358 million have been awarded to more than 3,000 different people and groups in the borough since the National Lottery was founded in 1994.

Any organisation in the borough that received funds in the past could win a further £10,000 by entering the 25th Birthday National Lottery Awards.

Most National Lottery grants are for £10,000 or less, despite higher profile projects like the £12.4 million Globe Theatre reconstruction.

Southwark and Lambeth based charity The Bike Project won the £10,000 for being the nation’s favourite voluntary/charity project last year - it donated recycled bikes to refugees and asylum seekers.

Other Southwark organisations to benefit from grants include CSC Hub for a foodbank programme at, Gilesmead Estate for a community garden at and The Friends of One Tower Bridge Road for music and dance workshops for older people.

More road closures along the Rye

RYE LANE will be closed between Hanover Park and Choumert Road this week as the next stage of the gas mains engineering work takes place.

Gas company SGN say work is continuing apace and ahead of schedule, with the fifth phase starting this week.

Since last Monday, the mains between Bournemouth Road and Choumert Road are being replaced, with a diversion in place via Hanover Park and Consort Road, except for deliveries and bin collection which will continue as normal.

Bournemouth Road will also be closed at the junction with Rye Lane to let the diggers in.

During this work, the rest Bournemouth Road will be open both ways to traffic.

From Monday, April 15, Bournemouth Road should be reopened and work will move onto Choumert Road, which will be closed at its junction with Rye Lane.

Rye Lane remains open to pedestrians throughout.

A HERNE Hill man, who robbed a “very vulnerable” elderly couple in their home at knifepoint has been jailed.

On November 9, Rhys Modeste, 21, of Peabody Hill, knocked at the couple’s home in Lambeth – both of whom are in their eighties – pretending to be a gas man.

But when they opened the door, Modeste forced his way inside with a knife and stole the keys to their Audi parked out front.

home armed with a knife on December 9 last year – to steal the couple’s replacement car only days after they bought it.

Now the “heartless” criminal has been handed a sixteen-year jail sentence after a trial at Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, March 3.

In court, he pleaded guilty to three counts of robbery as well as a charge of handling stolen goods and making

off without payment.

The court also heard how he had stolen a car from another woman at knife-point on Chestnut Road in August.

DC Oliver Honeybun-Arnolda, of Area South, who led the investigation said: “This was a callous and heartless set of robberies whereby Modeste targeted some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

“His use of force and a knife left his victims terrified and fearing for their safety.”

Volunteers needed for a blind charity

A CHARITY for the blind is appealing for volunteers to help people in Southwark using their new radios.

The specially designed devices provided by the British Wireless for the Blind Fund allow blind and partiallysighted people to access a range of audio resources including audio books.

The national charity needs volunteer 'radio supporters' in Southwark to visit visually impaired people and help install and explain how to use their new device.

BWBF regional development manager, Sophie Wheldon, said: “Volunteering really is a great way of giving back to your community and we are looking for people in Southwark and surrounding areas to support us in delivering our service to blind people, giving them a lifeline to the outside world.”

“This is a rewarding and flexible voluntary role, you can do it a time to suit you and you will come away knowing you have made a real positive difference to someone’s life.”

The charity's radios provide a lifeline to the world for those, who are unable to afford a specially adapted radio and meet their criteria by supplying them on a free loan basis.

Take advantage of the funds and free council giveaways B REXIT CONTINUES to dominate correspondence.

I’m pleased to have strong support from local people in opposing the damage the Prime Minister’s weak proposals would cause.

The number of people asking me to back May is in single figures. Over 6,000 people have been in touch to oppose Brexit, almost 80% of our borough back Remain and more than 70,000 people in Southwark want to revoke Article 50. I will keep speaking up for local people on this crucial issue.

Crime and antisocial behaviour continues to rocket up the list of issues local people raise. I take concerns to local police teams and our Borough Commander. In Parliament I raised tougher sentences for knife crime offenders. Local families who have lost loved ones tell me longer sentences would be a deterrent as well as encouraging more witnesses to come forward.

I’m setting up a meeting with the Home Secretary for local organisations tackling knife crime.

The Prime Minister claims Brexit is preventing her tackling the national growth in violent crime. That is a

shocking admission: it is not an either/or choice. People deserve a Government capable of tackling all the issues our country faces.

I visited English Martyrs school in Walworth recently. We live in the heart of London and all kids growing up here deserve the best chances in life. As MP I get to plug chances to improve lives and I was glad to highlight the council’s new ‘Positive Futures Fund’ at English Martyrs.

Organisations can now bid for £15,000 to help provide opportunities that divert young people away from crime. Bids must be drawn up with young people to ensure they are more likely to be effective.

The council fund works alongside that of Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who has provided £15 million for the Young Londoners’ Fund (YLF) which is already benefitting people across Southwark, including anti-knife crime workshops. I am supporting Downside Fisher Youth Club’s application for the next round of funding. These schemes can be transformative and I encourage more local organisations to apply. I am happy to work with smaller organisations applying for council or City Hall funds – just drop me a line.

Despite losing half its funding from national Government since 2010, Southwark council has also introduced other help for local families. Free, healthy primary school meals have saved families a fortune.

The council has also announced free annual theatre trips for local primary schools to ensure local children benefit from having so many theatres in our borough.

My own Easter plans have been axed due to May’s intransigence over her awful Brexit proposals.

Parliament is sitting over Easter to vote against her again. Her plans are not good enough for our country and she needs to go back to the people with a new proposal. But I hope families enjoying Easter breaks are aware Southwark residents are entitled to free swimming pool and gym use in council owned facilities, like The Castle. Just search ‘Southwark free swim’ online to register and dive in!

My daughter Esme turned three last week and with Parliament’s leaky roof letting rain pour into the Commons, perhaps I should take her to work with me in the hope the April showers continue and we can have our swim there!

SK MOST doctors what you can do to reduce your risk of ill-health and I’d wager they will offer the same advice: eat healthily, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep and manage your weight.

There’s a saying amongst healthcare professionals that prevention often is better than cure.

In many cases, some conditions that cause long-term health problems can be prevented altogether by making small lifestyle changes.

This is true of Type 2 diabetes – a serious medical condition that can lead to blindness, kidney failure or the loss of a limb. People with Type 2 are also at increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Worryingly, more than 200,000 people are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes every year – costing the NHS around £9billion to treat.

HIS WEEK the Mayor’s much publicised ultra-low emissions zone (ULEZ) came into force, the first 24-hour pollution charge area in the world. The move means drivers with older, polluting vehicles will be forced to shell out up to £12.50 a day on top of the congestion charge in the zone, which covers areas of Southwark.

While the charges are substantial, they will save lives.

This paper has reported extensively about poor-quality air in the capital which scientists estimate causes the premature deaths of 10,000 Londoners every year.

Children’s lung development is also stunted by the pollution, say experts.

TfL estimates it will reduce road transport emissions by 45 per cent in the first two years.

And action is required for climate change reasons too.

This week council bosses have announced a climate change summit to be held later in the year after declaring a ‘climate emergency’ and bidding to go carbon-neutral by 2030.

Southwark is especially affected, say town hall chiefs, as two-thirds of the borough’s residents live less than ten metres above sea level.

However, they added they cannot do it on their own: businesses and central government also have to play a part. The city-wide zone is one of the ways authorities have played their part and has already encouraged some businesses to change the way they travel in inner-city London.

Team London Bridge has recently launched a push for more cargo bike deliveries in the area.

Guy’s and St Thomas’s are among those signed up, using pedal power to deliver vital medical supplies to its hospitals instead of polluting vehicles.

However, support is needed for hard-working businesses and charities which are less able to make the transition. The Federation of Small Businesses says many of its members are worried about being able to meet the new stringent low emission demands.

UK Homes 4 Heroes is among those affected. A small charity, it delivers soup and clothes to homeless ex-veterans inside the low-emissions zone using a donated van which does not meet ULEZ standards.

It has said goodbye to the ‘Hero 4’ van but says the Mayor’s scrappage amount of £3,500 is not enough to purchase a new vehicle to continue the vital outreach work in central London.

It means the work helping London’s homeless ex-squaddies could come to an end, unless enough money is raised to purchase a new, cleaner vehicle.

After being contacted by the News, TfL vowed to get in contact with the charity to offer “further advice and support.” The body says it has worked alongside many charities and small businesses to help them clean their fleets in time for the zone’s introduction. This work must be proactive and continuous. Moves to clean up the capital’s air are welcome. But proper support for those most affected – such as UK Homes 4 Heroes – is vital.

Bolton brouhaha

A FEATHER in the cap for the James Allen Girls’ School in Dulwich which hosted the flagship BBC debate show, Question Time, last week.

But it hasn’t been without controversy: the show had originally been due for broadcast from Bolton, before the BBC passed it over in favour of the Southwark location.

A think-tank dedicated to towns rather than cities – the Ronseal-named Centre for Towns – has decided to stick up for Bolton over the Big Smoke.

“Heaven forbid any of the panellists had to leave London for a second. We get it,” the centre huffed.

The BBC told us a location change was necessary because politicians wouldn’t be able to make it to Bolton while Brexit debates rage in Parliament.

It vowed to find another venue and broadcast from the Greater Manchester locale “in due course.”

But the Centre for Towns is still not happy.

It’s vowed to have its own Question Time show in Bolton this Thursday evening – and urgently appealed for help with a venue, panellists and equipment “because we’re based in a shed.”

Bermondsey love story

A BERMONDSEY love story is playing out in the Metro newspaper.

Last week a Bermondsey-based commuter wrote into its letters page to try and track down her rushhour crush.

“Black guy on the Jubilee Line with bleached

hair,” she wrote. “You got on at Canning Town and we were checking each other out. I would love to get to know you. Hit me up.”

On Monday, ‘Black Guy on the Jubilee Line’ wrote in. “To the blonde in the green bomber who got off at Bermondsey who’d love to get to know the black guy with bleached hair – that’s definitely me!”

Get in touch, he said – although quite how she is meant to do this when no contact details were left is anyone’s guess.

Southwark live-streams

COUNCIL MEETINGS are broadcast live over YouTube for those residents who can’t make proceedings in person.

It’s a valuable way of keeping up with what councillors are discussing and debating, even after the fact.

But now YouTube has added further restrictions for accounts to live-stream from mobile devices.

Under a new policy, accounts need 1,000 subscribers to broadcast their videos live.

The channel has seen an influx of new subscribers after the policy was changed, but still has a shortfall of fifty at the time of writing.

The News has contacted YouTube to ask whether it would make an exception for accounts such as local councils which live-stream meetings for accountability but do not meet the follower requirement.

10-year-old girl has saved the lives of five other people by donating her heart, kidneys, lungs, liver and pancreas.

Ella Thatcher passed away in early 2018 following a seizure. She had Dravet syndrome, a very rare and severe form of childhood epilepsy.

Ella’s parents, Anna and Mike, donated their daughter’s organs and are encouraging people to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Anna, 46, said: “It was the hardest thing because we were just willing her to blink or make a sign but after all the tests we were left in no doubt that she had gone.

“The staff were amazing right from the start. They stroked her hair, spoke to her and kept her warm. A senior nurse who had just finished a night shift even stayed to hold Ella’s hand in the operating theatre so she wasn’t alone.”

Anna, who has two other children, added: “It’s really comforting to know that a bit of her goes on and that other families didn’t have to go through the same thing. Because of Ella, five other families out there never had to plan funerals or miss the person they love.”

Ella’s organs helped to save the lives of two children and three adults.

Anna said: “We received a letter from the child who got her heart and they called Ella a hero – that was amazing.”

Ella’s initials were recently engraved onto a new piece of artwork that honours those who have donated organs and helped save the lives of others.

Titled ‘The Song of the Nightingale’ and made from steel and felt, the artwork was created for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, which includes Evelina London, by a former patient and transplant recipient, Ted Harrison.

“I hope the new artwork raises awareness of organ donation and that people in the depth of their own grief can see that they can stop someone else going through the

The year 2020 marks the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale – the founder of modern nursing.

A MULTIPLE award-winning homelessness charity and soup kitchen faces becoming homeless itself after a two-year battle to stay in its Aylesbury Estate base - amid claims of anti-social behaviour, complaints from residents, and Southwark Council court action.

The council says it reached a voluntary agreement with Divine Rescue, involving the charity leaving Thurlow Lodge by last Thursday, April 4.

That day came and went and, at the time of going to press the charity still has no new premises to move to. The council has now granted an extension until April 18, but warns time is running out.

Divine Rescue has been based at the tenants’ hall for nearly fourteen years and in that time won plaudits for its work – including from Southwark Council, local police officers and community support workers, with praise even coming from the top at Southwark’s Met. Its roster of sixteen awards received between 2009 and 2016 include winning the 2013 Stephen Lawrence Women Awards and 2015’s Best Community Initiative at the Southwark Housing Heroes Awards.

But in the last two years, the charity has been embroiled in an increasingly acrimonious dispute with the council.

While the local authority has made claims of anti-social behaviour at Divine Rescue’s events, strongly denied by the charity, its volunteers have been exasperated by the long-running leaks, hot water and heating problems in the building.

The charity, which currently has no formal lease and is no longer paying rent, has previously had its hours and access to the building curtailed, but until this month has been allowed to continue using Thurlow Lodge.

Councillor Victoria Mills, cabinet member for finance, performance and Brexit, told the News: “Following a series of complaints from residents, many about antisocial behaviour, and a very serious incident where the police were involved, we had no choice but to involve the courts and insist that Divine Rescue curtailed their night-time hours and ultimately found an alternative premises.

“Despite these difficulties, we have worked with them for over two years now to try to resolve this situation.

“In February we reached a mutual and voluntary agreement with Divine Rescue that they would leave on 4 April.

“We will now offer Divine Rescue a further short period of time to find new premises but ultimately, in line with residents’ wishes and due to serious nature of incidents that have taken place, we can no longer support them remaining after that.

“The Thurlow Lodge premises is a

community facility for all and we will continue to work with local residents to ensure it is open for them.”

People who have been helped by the charity are distraught and, after failing to find and alternative HQ, have launched a last-ditch campaign to reverse the decision, appealing to local MPs to intervene.

One resident in Neil Coyle’s constituency, Bermondsey and Old Southwark, wrote to the Labour MP saying: “The impact of the service provided by Divine Rescue being withdrawn will have devastating effect on our lives, as this is the only safe place where we can come without being judged or ridiculed; treated with respect and dignity; and be able to receive the support that we need to rebuild our lives.”

The council says it is not its job to find the charity a new home – arguing its work duplicated its existing professional services and could even inadvertently divert people away from help.

“Following expert evaluation of the services provided by Divine Rescue we concluded that the high quality services we commission from Shelter and St Mungo’s, which ensure that homeless people receive a wide range of support beyond food for the day, should be prioritised,” explained Cllr Mills.

“There is a danger that, however wellmeant, when rough sleepers are diverted elsewhere, they could miss out on this broad range of support that we already provide.”

Divine Rescue has countered these claims, arguing there is a real need for a soup kitchen and long-term support in Walworth.

Sister Catherine Msoni, the charity’s founder, claimed trustees felt pressured to sign the agreement to leave, arguing they never would have done so on the understanding the council wouldn’t help them find a new home. She told the News the stress had left her ‘isolated’ and ‘undermined’ by the dispute.

£30,000 A MONTH SPENT ON BOARDED UP OLD TOWN HALL

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has spent £30,000 a month on the boarded up Walworth Town Hall, council papers reveal, as developer General Projects is selected to take over the refurbishment project.

since. English Heritage have placed the former museum library and office space on its register of ‘at risk’ buildings.

According to council papers published in March, the developer’s successful pitch involves restoring the building into an arts and community space, with help from a £2 million grant.

The council says it is spending £30,000 to maintain and monitor the boarded up town hall each month,

including 24/7 security as stipulated by its insurers.

In the aftermath of the fire, Southwark Council committed to saving the building, but later found an estimated £35 million refurbishment cost was prohibitive and said the only option was to look at other options, hence bringing in developers to take over the lease and divide up the space into some community and commercial uses.

General Projects describes itself as ‘not a traditional real estate businesses. Its successful proposal includes details for a new centre run by 20 staff, including a restaurant and café, and a ‘society room’, which community groups will be able to lease on a short-term basis.

In January, the council has also agreed a lease on a new Walworth Library and Southwark Heritage Centre, on Walworth Road, where some collections from the Cuming Museum, kept in storage since the fire except for occasional showcases, will be displayed.

RETURN OF THE ‘JOYSLIDE’

DESIGNS HAVE been unveiled for a new Bermondsey ‘joyslide’ nearly 100 years after it was first built.

The slide was the brainchild of Arthur Carr, of Peek Frean’s Biscuit Factory, who noticed local children were using the steps of St James’s Church as a slide.

It was first installed in 1921, providing enjoyment to Bermondsey children for years, until it was pulled down in the mid-1980s.

But now the slide will be reinstalled in the churchyard as two different designs have been put on display inside St James’s Church. Construction is hoped to begin by Easter 2020.

Canon Gary Jenkins, the vicar at the church, said: “Something like this, Bermondsey people have got a deep affection for the joy slide.

“The time has come now to bring it back to the churchyard for the enjoyment of local children.

“There’s two quite different designs and we want to know what people think,

and especially what children think.”

Both designs would be smaller than the original and made from sustainable hardwood.

Design one is the brainchild of Fergus Carr, the great-great of Arthur Carr who was responsible for the joyslide in 1921, and would cost £51,000. The second, by Jupiter Play, would cost £58,000.

Ward councillor, Anood Al-Samerai said: “Liberal Democrat Councillors are delighted to support the Joy Slide project as it is important for our Bermondsey heritage and for future generations. It has been a pleasure helping and working with the various groups involved so far. We look forward to hearing the views of local residents on the designs for a new slide.”

The project has been spearheaded by Friends of St James’s, with involvement from residents, ward councillors, representatives of the Church and Southwark Council.

So far around £25,000 has been pledged to the project, with the remaining amount being fundraised after the design is chosen.

COMMUTERS WERE forced to evacuate a packed rush hour train which caught fire at London Bridge on Monday morning, causing severe transport delays.

Two fire engines were called to the blaze at 8.40am, which damaged approximately ten per cent of the underneath of one of the train carriages.

All passengers were safely removed, and no injuries were reported in connection with the fire.

Pictures taken of the fire by commuters showed flames rising from the tracks underneath the train while it was pulled in at the station.

One commuter who took pictures of the blaze, said: “When your driver says there’s a minor fault on the train and you get off to see it on fire. Yeah that.”

Another who took a video of the incident added: “I thought I could smell burning.”

Separately, on a different platform, an ill passenger was attended to, said Southern Rail.

A ROW has broken out over approved plans for a former Rotherhithe pub, after a ward councillor said her bid to have it heard by a full committee was unfairly dismissed.

The historic pub that residents fought to save with the backing of Camberwell and Peckham MP has now been listed by property advisors Christie & Co. The pub, is currently let on a 20-year lease, has an asking price of £1,250,000 for the freehold.

The building includes the downstairs pub, beer cellar, basement, large garden and a three-bedroom flat on the first floor. Planning permission to extend at the back has also been granted.

As previously reported, the pub had been under threat when landlady Julie

Clifford had her rent doubled by freeholder Landlord Camberwell Road Ltd. After an outcry from residents and a petition gathered 1,633 signatures, she was given a new £75,000-per-year deal.

The pub, believed to be around 160 years old, is also listed as an ‘asset of community value’ by Southwark Council.

As the News has previously reported, nearly 400 residents have signed a petition against plans for flats approved under delegated council officer powers for the Clipper Pub in Rotherhithe Street.

Plans being considered by officers can be ‘called in’ and sent to committee if two ward councillors ask for it.

Cllr Jane Salmon, who represents Surrey Docks ward where the former boozer sits, told the News that she asked for the plans to be considered by a committee of councillors, but wasn’t told that a seconder would be needed.

“I got a phone call from the residents who said it’d gone through,” she said.

“I emailed the officer and said ‘I don’t understand, I thought I asked for it to go to committee?’

“He said that all of these requests have to have a seconder, but I said why didn’t you tell me?

“It’s just really not acceptable to me.”

Now Cllr Salmon says she has received an apology from the council’s planning department for allegedly not following best practice.

However, Cllr Johnson Situ, who holds the cabinet portfolio for planning, said all councillors are told that two of them are needed to call in planning decisions when elected.

“We recognise that some applications that are decided under delegated decision may be of concern to local residents and to ensure the local community have the opportunity to

have their say, the planning process gives the local ward councillors the opportunity to request for planning applications to be heard at committee,” he said.

“For a ‘call in’ to take effect, two councillors have to make the request, this has been the case for many years and all councillors are informed of this fact when elected.

“To further support ward councillors, officers often remind members of the need for two councillors to make the request.

“In this case the second request didn’t follow Cllr Salmon’s original request for it to be heard by a committee.”

Now the decision has been approved, there is no mechanism for it to be withdrawn, Cllr Salmon told the News.

“Once it’s done, it’s a done deal,” she said.

A plan had been previously approved for a different scheme on the site, which those signing the petition state would have mirrored nearby warehouses and was “designed to contribute to and not damage the local heritage.”

But the petition dubs the revised scheme, which will see six two bed flats being created alongside a ground floor retail space and basement parking, an “eyesore”.

King’s College Hospital Trust could have an overspend of £191 MILLION says report

KING'S COLLEGE Hospital Trust could overspend by as much as £191 million by the end of the 2018-19 financial year, according to reports.

The trust, which was placed in financial special measures due to its spiralling deficit, has more than doubled its overspend within months.

This will be the largest overspend in history - breaking the record already held by the trust.

Last year, it had expected to overspend by £30 million, increasing to £130 million at the beginning of 2019.

According to documents seen by the

Guardian and prepared for the trust's board of directors, the precarious financial situation has worsened after delays to its new critical care unit, not making savings of £8 million as planned, and fines after failing to hit waiting time targets for A&E and planned operations.

A spokesperson for the trust said despite the challenges, the trust’s staff shortages were improving and plans were in place to help 'stabilise'.

A statement explained: "Our current financial forecast is higher than that planned this time last year.

"However, over the past year, a number of changes have been implemented that will enable the trust to improve its productivity and stabilise

its longer term stability.

"Despite the financial challenges, the trust continues to deliver excellent, high-quality care and services to patients.

"Following a number of successful recruitment drives in the last year, King's has cut its nursing vacancy by half to 7.3 per cent - one of the lowest nursing vacancies rates in London.

"Additionally, a number of recent appointments have been made in areas with higher clinical vacancy rates, such as the Princess Royal University Hospital Emergency Department."

As the News reported, Guy's and St Thomas' chair, Sir Hugh Taylor, has taken over at King's too, on an interim basis, until January 2021.

The theme for this year was 'We Love to Learn'.

A MAN who intervened and helped a woman raped near London Bridge to safety is being sought by police, in the hope he can help officers identify her attacker.

The victim, a tourist staying in Borough High Street, was attacked by a man at around 3.30am on November 1 after he approached her from behind and threatened her while she was walking home.

Another man interrupted the attack, and the suspect fled, taking the

A MOTHER and son from south London are among the authors of a new study revealing the true scale of knife and gunshot injuries treated at King’s College Hospital, including a staggering 478 in one year alone.

James Olding, from Crystal Palace, is training as an oral maxillofacial surgeon, a highly specialised type of head and neck surgery requiring both a medical and dental degrees.

He has worked at King’s College Hospital with consultant Kathy Fan for two years, and is part of a team who treated 65 people between 2016 and 2017 with severe penetrating wounds to the head and neck.

These experiences at King’s spurred him to analyse the cases they have treated, and others from the hospital’s trauma wards, ranging from self-harm, terrorist attacks, and ‘interpersonal violence’ – a catch-all term including domestic assaults and gang-related injuries.

Their research outlines not only the rapidly rising number of knife and gun injuries, and those caused by other objects, from bottles to spanners, but also the need for hospitals less equipped or accustomed to injuries of this nature to be prepared. This type of violence is growing around the country, not just in London and its outer reaches.

James couldn’t have produced the analysis without input from King’s lead trauma nurse; his mum, Carole.

Carole, who joined the hospital in 2002 as its only trauma nurse, now leads a nursing team responding to some of the most devastating injuries, including those flown in by air ambulance.

She works closely with Redthread, the charity that tries to help people escape a cycle of violence while they are recovering from their injuries and at a ‘teachable moment’, profiled in the News.

When asked if working together was planned, James laughs “absolutely not!”

The former John Fisher school student first came to King’s on a student placement at eighteen, where he saw the A&E department in action, before

visiting the oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

Carole remembers: “I said to him that it’s really worth seeing what they do as it’s some of the most worthwhile work.

“He came out and said: ‘I’m going to be an oral maxillofacial surgeon’; and he’s never deviated from that.”

James, who has witnessed a gunshot incident outside his own home in Stockwell, says: “If you look at the data I analysed there is a real focus around Camberwell, Stockwell, Vauxhall, Brixton, places like that.”

But he also highlights the significant, and growing, minority of those treated coming from outer London and Kent.

“Postcodes are definitely diversifying, and from my personal experience involving night shifts in this trauma centre and others, this involves clear gang injuries, where they’ve tried to give patients a ‘smile’, or others that it don’t seem gang related.

“In many cases patients have tried to avoid disclosing that it was a knife injury, or deny it, even though clinically it is clearly from a knife.”

He has had several cases of people absconding as soon as any police involvement is mentioned, making it likely the number of cases they compiled is the tip of the iceberg.

A true figure could be twice as high.

And these are only the injuries seen by the major trauma team.

Part of the reason King’s saw an increase in these serious types of injuries is by nature of it becoming a major trauma centre in 2010, now serving Kent, too.

But every year since then, the numbers have still gone up, including a 20 per cent jump in one year alone.

Some are from terror attacks, characteristically involving more frenzied, deep wounds – stabbing to kill.

And, as Kathy adds, there is a particularly emotional aspect to their line of work.

“Injuring someone’s face has a meaning”, she says. “That person is never going to forget because they see it all the time.

“Your face is your identity. We see people with scars who want to be rid of them, but they never go away completely.

“We have people saying they don’t want their children to see them like this.”

Woman is critical after Bermondsey collision

A FEMALE pedestrian remained in a “critical” condition as the News went to press after being in a collision with a lorry on Tower Bridge Road.

Police have appealed for any dash cam footage of the incident, which happened near the junction of Aberdour Street on Friday April 5 at around 11.32am.

Officers said the lorry driver stopped at the scene and is helping police with their enquiries. There have been no arrests.

Kathy tells one story about a boy who was injured after getting on the wrong bus.

Something as simple as going down the wrong road led to him being seriously hurt, all because he crossed an invisible boundary.

Their research is already forming part of the national debate on knife crime, and how different groups from schools, hospitals, police and the wider

community can come together to tackle it.

But behind each statistic there is a real person, often terrified.

“I see the serious injuries but it often starts with a little scratch,” says Carole.

“Some of these boys have been groomed from a very early age by older boys in the gang.

“They are seen as male role models, but what they need is to stay in school

and realise they could be a barrister and a doctor.

“Sometimes, they are actually doing what they’re doing and putting their lives at risk, to keep the family going as there’s not enough money.

“They’re not all nice - some are absolutely awful - but I do feel so sorry for them because they’re in a cycle of violence.

“They limit their entire life.”

One witness, Jim Gosnell, 86, who was sitting outside a nearby carpet shop at the time of the collision, told the paper he heard a “terrible bang.”

When he looked up, he saw the woman “lying back onto the pavement.”

“She bashed her head, so they took her away in an ambulance,” Mr Gosnell, of adjoining Green Walk, said.

The pedestrian, aged 49, was rushed to an east London hospital.

‘GOING, GONE’ is a show that was originally commissioned to coincide with Britain’s exit from the EU. Though the works find themselves in a less certain political landscape, the show remains a simple but acute comment on these tumultuous times, writes Hannah Kelly.

Selected from over 145 applicants, the two works featured are moving image pieces by the artists Richard Whitby and duo Webb-Ellis. The simplicity of the curation, focused entirely on two works, is one of its greatest attributes. Moving image pieces require time and full immersion, which the sparse detail and darkened surrounding allow plenty of space and time for.

The first work is Whitby’s The Lost Ones. Here different individuals are filmed in a waiting room being interviewed by an automated voice that becomes increasingly invasive and hostile.

Sliced into the scene are images that appear to come from one’s nightmares. The piece is well developed and draws one through the layered comments on immigration with subtlety, yet it never disappears so far into the abstract that it loses its audience.

As the improvisation becomes increasingly invasive, the sense of a loss of control and eventual grip on reality is both hard to watch and equally hard to forget.

The second piece by artists WebbEllis reflects more on the sense of nostalgia and uncertainty in the generation growing up today. Two

screens depict a group of teenagers as they move from a sunset, beach fires, to a rave, to fairgrounds and back out into the night. Set in the summer or 2018 in Yorkshire the fragmentation in the split screens evokes a sense of now and not yet.

There is a time that is passing and a future which is deeply uncertain.

Yet there is a thread that runs through both screens and out into the space of youthful hope; both naïve and yet granted importance in the artistic setting. These pieces

mark a beginning in the artistic world of a discussion surrounding these changing times and it’s highly worthwhile giving each piece some time.

s we queued to get in to see The Twilight Zone I could hear the theme tune eerily resonating around my head. I looked round to see where this fear-inducing, iconic sound was coming from and found that it was my theatre partner Fiona, unable to conceal her excitement. ‘I can’t conceal my excitement,’ she said as she got in close in case she was beamed up to be probed by aliens in their rocket ship, writes Michael Holland.

When we stepped inside the theme tune got louder and louder as more and more people echoed Fiona’s lead. Eventually the lights dimmed and the audience thankfully faded down too. A totally black and white set was soon peopled by black and white people in black and white clothes, perfectly recreating Rod Serling’s legendary, black and white, multi-award-winning sci-fi series from the early 60s.

In this stage version SFX made leaping into another time and space possible; legerdemain had us believing in magic when newspaper

headlines changed before our very eyes, and cigarettes eerily appeared in the hands of non-smokers. Based on the original stories a series of inter-changing vignettes took us through various chilling tales where aliens created panic at a snowed-in diner; young children were pulled from their beds into a parallel universe, a child ghost warned of impending doom, and an inanimate ventriloquist’s dummy took control of its audience.

My skin creepily crawled and tingled all over as nightmares came to life. I jumped when Fiona grabbed my arm and - like a Ninja under attack shrugged her off. She slid over and seized the arm of the stranger on the other side. He was thankful for the protection as his wife had got under her seat with a coat over her head.

Serling’s unsettling yarns, however, held a different, underlying message; they were parables that reflected the underlying problems within American society, moral tales dressed up as fantasy, suspense, horror or psychological thriller. The tale about the neighbour who builds an

underground bunker to save his family in the event of a nuclear war is particularly telling as it could be Trump’s America today.

Yes, there were ironic chuckles from some people in the theatre, and running jokes were inserted to cater for the irony, but you could hear the fear behind their hollow laughter. Yes, we wondered how we could have been so gullible about alien attack and ghosts when we once watched The Twilight Zone on TV, but now, 60s years on since the first episode was screened, we find ourselves transfixed all over again.

The last couple of stories dragged on a bit but that is a minor complaint when you’ve had so much fun. I can hear the music again now…

he newest production making the leap across the pond to the West End is the Broadway smash hit musical, Waitress. Based on the late Adrienne Shelly’s indie movie hit of the same name, Waitress is a heartfelt but admittedly lightweight story of a woman trapped in an unhappy, abusive marriage, coping with her lot as best she knows how – by baking pies, writes Rosie O’Connell.

Jenna, played by Katharine McPhee, dreams of her freedom and when there is $20,000 up for grabs at a local baking competition she can finally see her way out. When Jenna realises she is pregnant, however, she finds herself at Dr Pomatter’s, her married gynaecologist’s office, and becomes drawn to his awkward, empathetic manner that could potentially present a different sort of escape.

The all-female writing and creative team (a first for Broadway and the West End alike) create a show that is full of feeling and tension that is guided through by Sara Bareilles’ wonderfully pop-folk music and lyrics, and expertly sprinkled with comedic moments from Jessie Nelson’s book. The show balances two sides, there is the serious, sometimes painfully honest, moments from Jenna’s reluctant acceptance of motherhood, to the portrayal of the deadbeat, abusive husband, Earl (Peter Hannah). But then there is the light, frivolous, sex comedy side, filled with eyebrow raising episodes. Yes the piece is full of sugar but it is not without its added spice either. It seems that the balance is relatively well judged; the characters are flawed and morally ambiguous and yet so overwhelmingly likeable.

There, too, doesn’t seem to be a weak

Reprising her Broadway role, Katharine McPhee’s simultaneous vulnerability, warmth and aching sadness as Jenna, exudes into the audience, making her confessional lament of a showstopper, “She Used to Be Mine”, even more heart-rending with her powerful voice seeming to lift the roof off. Outstanding too is David Hunter as the self-effacing, clumsy, yet endearing Doctor who takes more than a professional interest in Jenna.

Marisha Wallace and Laura Baldwin are fantastic as Becky and Dawn respectively, Jenna’s work colleagues.

Each get to shine in their own numbers, with Wallace nailing Becky’s no nonsense attitude in “I Didn’t Plan It”, and Baldwin charming as the nerdy, shy, Civil War obsessed Dawn in “When He Sees Me”. Jack McBrayer is an absolute riot as Ogie, Dawns prospective, goofy suitor. His performance energises the stage and the audience alike with his lanky, outrageous courtship that is full of magic tricks and hyperactivity.

All in all the show has a big heart.

Director Diane Paulus’s production is classy and slick and moves through the changes in tone as smoothly as the changes in scene and set. The overarching balance of sentimentality and silliness leaves a wonderfully fulfilled and warm feeling that is as hard to resist as some of the pies baked throughout would be.

The arrival of a Japanese Buddhist nun from c.1300, a Victorian explorer and 9th century apocryphal female pope in a smart London restaurant is certainly arresting. The women compete to tell stories of lives heightened by adventure but scarred by loss. The writing of the first act, with its dialogue of

constant interruption, is clever but possibly a matter of style over substance. It is clearly an impressive feat for the actors to navigate and gives the restaurant scene the sense of an ego-driven male boardroom/ For me, however, discombobulation turned to alienation and I lost interest in all but the figure of Dull Gret (1561).

She attracted attention firstly though her silence and then the powerful way she transformed from clownish presence to passionate warrior and combined a heart-rending story of trauma and loss with anger and armour. After a patient wait she steals the show.

The loss of children is returned to again and again in the historic stories. The reason for this, and lead character Marlene’s discomfort with it, becomes slowly apparent as the play moves from restaurant to recruitment agency’s swanky office and then the intimacy of a family kitchen. A story of modern sacrifice

unfolds, and the audience ponders the true cost, both to herself and others, of Marlene’s high-flying career. She is a poster girl for the supposed opportunity created in Thatcher’s Britain, her family for those who were left behind.

Though not written as a period piece, the 80s setting now feels like one. There are many resonances but perhaps the deepest was watching Marlene and her sister, who has stayed behind to be the family carer while Marlene headed off to make her fortune, descend into seemingly irreconcilable separation over politics, something that so many families and friendships have experienced in recent heated political times.

Caryl Churchill is known for economical staging, but no expense has been spared here. This is a sumptuous production with memorable sets and a large cast where no actors duplicate any parts.

The ideas are interesting, the timing

relevant - The play opened in a week where our government was in chaos and the gender pay gap was reported to have widened. The shoulder pads and language of the 80s’ executives may be occasionally and noticeably ‘of their time’ but the issues seem depressingly similar.

Although the play was full of clever ideas, it felt much more absorbing when it moved away from the gimmicky restaurant scene and the overly shiny office to the two sisters and a daughter, played brilliantly by Liv Hill, sitting together around the kitchen table, in pain.

W

hen Irene Hayes, 86, was three-years-old, her mum gave her sixpence, which she spent on an hour-long dance class and a glass of lemonade, writes Josh Salisbury...

“I think I was more interested in the lemonade!” she laughs. But the dance class also stuck.

It sparked a life-long passion which saw Irene set up one of the area’s longest-running schools - Superarts Academy on Walworth’s Larcom Street – for which she was awarded a British Empire Medal last week.

“I was over the moon, I was excited,” says Irene, who lives in Kennington.

But initially she didn’t believe the letter was real, her daughter Susan tells the News, a director at the academy. “I put it on Facebook, we were so delighted, once we were allowed to,” she says.

“Lots of people have all kinds of places from all over the years said how pleased they are and welldeserved it is.”

Irene was officially given the medal at a formal ceremony at the Tower of London on Friday, April 5 for “services to Dance and to the community in Southwark.”

But her proudest achievement is how long she has kept the dance school running for, known locally as ‘Renie’s’. She founded it in 1962 in nearby Manor Place before moving to Larcom Street in 1965.

It wasn’t easy. “It was difficult to begin with, being on my own, totally. [But] I was with my husband, he was in on it, he loved it,” says Irene.

The 86-year-old used to pull a trolley on it with a machine on it for music to dance to in the early days, and also sewed costumes for the shows herself, working 48 or 50 weeks of the year.

When she moved to her current premises in Larcom Street, one person warned that other dance schools have been and gone on the site before her.

“And I said ‘well let me try’ and here we are fifty years on,” she says.

Keeping it going can still be tricky at times.

“Some of the children can’t afford it, in this area, but I never want to say no to them, how can you turn children away when they want to dance?” says Irene.

It’s how she started.

During the war, her father used to take her to the hotels in Park Lane where she’d do tap and acrobatics to keep people entertained – not for pay, but to keep people entertained.

Aged ten, she started dance classes at a venue in Denmark Hill. Just two years later she was teaching classes herself.

She also began doing lots of pantomimes during the war.

Once she starred in a production of Babes in the Wood, but couldn’t stop laughing underneath the leaves on-stage, as they wouldn’t stop rustling.

“We were under the leaves, we got the giggles they had to call in the whole cast in and punish us.”

The spur to start her own school came after she married and had Susan. Susan went to dance classes too, and when Susan was around

eight-years-old, her mum Irene thought, ‘well I could do that’, they both say.

From just five pupils – although it quickly turned into 75 within five weeks - the school has taught thousands of pupils from across Southwark over the years.

Some teachers at the school, which

does tap, ballet, musical theatre and others, are ex-pupils, while a few children who currently attend even have grandparents who were also taught at Irene’s school.

The school counts choreographers in LA, BBC radio presenters and assistant choreographers on the XFactor among its alumni.

“Others went into TV and things like that. We’ve got people in Ireland who’s got their own school, somebody in Australia as well,” says Susan.

“When they come back to see me, I say did you enjoy it?,” adds Irene.

“And they say yes. And that’s what it’s all about.”

DIPO AKINYEMI struck a crucial double as Dulwich Hamlet boosted their survival chances with a first away win since October in National League South.

Striker Akinyemi scored from the penalty spot in the 36th minute against Chippenham Town and added a second nine minutes from time, before Nick McCootie’s 87th-minute goal for the hosts.

Gavin Rose’s side had Nyren Clunis sent off, but held on to move six points clear of the relegation zone with four games left in their first season in the sixth tier.

Clunis had earned his side the penalty

when he was fouled by Tariq Ossai, and Akinyemi converted.

Dan Thompson should have added a second for the Hamlet, before Ossai’s effort hit the post.

Rose brought on Dominic Vose and Anthony Cook and that gave his side more attacking impetus. In the 81st minute Cook cut in from the right wing before firing in a shot that goalkeeper Brad House saved, and Akinyemi was there to fire in his second.

Clunis was dismissed for an apparent headbutt with six minutes left, and McCootie pulled a goal back, but Hamlet came through five minutes of added-time for a deserved, and much-needed, away win.

THE ANNOYANCE for a brilliant Fisher side chasing a second promotion against the odds is that their rivals at the top of the SCEFL Premier Division table also keep winning.

But then Clunis appeared to be fouled just outside the penalty area by Greg Tindle. The referee didn’t see it that way as Clunis and Tindle squared up to each other, drawing in players from both sides.

It seemed there wasn’t a lot in it, but Clunis was surprised to be sent off for what was deemed to be the use of his head.

Rose gave a debut to new midfield signing Charlie Allen, as his side came under real pressure.

Chippenham’s goal was a gift, Jamie Mascoll failing to deal with a long ball before Michael Chambers and Magnus Okuonghae couldn’t clear. McCootie took advantage to shoot past Edwards.

There were five minutes of added-time and the home side pounded balls into the opposition box. Edwards came off his line to twice punch clear, and Hamlet’s pressure on the ball hurried Chippenham into poor crosses.

The final whistle brought relief and that first away win in a long time, as the away fans in the 532 crowd went away dreaming of survival that is now within reach.

Hamlet host Hungerford on Saturday.

Big Cheese for July Fitz date

Cheeseman fell short in his bid for a European belt against Sergio Garcia in February

TED CHEESEMAN will aim to bounce back from the first defeat of his professional career and defend his British super-welterweight title when he takes on Scott Fitzgerald this summer.

Fitzgerald was a surprise winner over Anthony Fowler last month as he claimed the vacant WBA superwelterweight international title with split-decision win, after a final-round knockdown.

The British Boxing Board of Control had plans for a purse bid for Cheeseman taking on Fowler. Bermondsey’s Cheeseman suffered his first defeat in sixteen bouts against Spain’s Sergio Garcia for the European superwelterweight title in February.

Fitzgerald will now replace Fowler.

In a statement after that March bout the BBBofC said: “Following Scott Fitzgerald’s defeat of Anthony Fowler in Liverpool, the Stewards have decided to withdraw Anthony Fowler from the above purse bid. The BBBofC have decided to put out the following contest: Ted Cheeseman vs Scott Fitzgerald.”

Purse bids were to be submitted by this Wednesday.

Cheeseman’s showdown with Fitzgerald is set to take place in July this year.

On Twitter, Cheeseman said: “Fair play to [Fitzgerald], backed your talk up, done the business and now I’m sure our teams will be in talks very soon.”

He added: Unlucky [Fowler], put up a good fight but come up short. As you said there’s levels in boxing, total different board game in the pros.”

PECKHAM RYE were back in league action last weekend away at Springhill United Reserves, where they closed out a narrow win.

The game started with the Rye on top with Duke Binitie twice going close.

The Rye kept pressing and Craig Parsons got through only for the opposition goalkeeper to save one-onone. But Parsons soon made the breakthrough, firing into the top corner to put his side ahead at the break.

Springhill pressed for an equalising goal and caused problems from setpieces, but the Rye were solid in defence and tactically disciplined.

The Peckham side could have

extended their lead through Neil Williams, but his header was saved.

It finished 1-0 to the visitors.

The Rye want support as they are in cup-final action on April 28, when they take on Baldon Sports at V.C.D Athletic.

IF MILLWALL were showing any signs of feeling the pressure against West Brom last weekend, they didn’t show it.

They produced one of their most dominant displays of the season, and it was the Baggies who looked like they were the ones scrapping for survival.

The Lions knew they had to win to stay out of the bottom three, where they would have ended up on Saturday after Rotherham’s win over Nottingham Forest.

Millwall don’t often get credit for the quality of their football, and since Lee Gregory has been played as a lone striker Neil Harris’ side have shown how good, how creative they can be in possession. Sure, they’re never going to play 30 passes probing for an opening, they are still practical but have footballers who want to show off their technique, who want to play with freedom.

They also look so much more mobile.

There is real pace and energy, mainly given by a relatively new midfield make-up. Ryan Leonard anchoring behind Ryan Tunnicliffe, who covers so much ground and breaks up so much opposition play, and the attackingmidfield revelation that is Ben Thompson.

Fair play to Harris for adapting to what suits the players who are showing so much good form. When Thompson was sent out to Portsmouth, did Lions fans believe he would be one of the most influential players towards the end of the campaign? Probably not.

The Den last weekend. Thompson has been unleashed as an attacking midfielder, showing brilliant technique, pace and, crucially, end product. His cross for Ahmed Hegazi’s own goal meant he had been directly involved in four of the Lions’ last six league goals, including scoring three times. Harris has played it perfectly, sending him out under the tutelage of someone he knows and trusts, Pompey boss Kenny Jackett, and now reaping the rewards.

And Tunnicliffe is showing that if you

work hard under Harris you’ll get your chance. It often felt Tunnicliffe was unlucky to be left out. But he is making his case for a new contract a strong one.

Always looking to break forward, he strode into West Brom’s half to link with Gregory, whose lay-off the midfielder picked up before firing low towards goal from outside the box. West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone should have saved it, but Tunnicliffe deserved his piece of luck as the ball squirmed over the line.

NEIL HARRIS said Fred Onyedinma was “unplayable” in training on his return from Wycombe in January – but the attacker could be on his way out of the club this summer.

Onyedinma was flying after his loan spell in League One with the Chairboys, and looked set to play an important role for Millwall in the second half of the season.

With Lions strikers failing to fire in front of goal – just two league strikes between Lee Gregory, Tom

Elliott and Steve Morison this year – it was hoped that Onyedinma would provide that spark up front.

Instead it has been Ben Thompson who has given Millwall an extra attacking edge, in a role that many around the club felt Onyedinma would have by now nailed down for himself.

Onyedinma has seen just eight minutes of Championship action in 2019.

Millwall fought hard to keep Onyedinma in the summer of 2017.

He was out of contract, having enjoyed a season in which he caught the eye of a number of Premier League sides with his

performances as the Lions reached the FA Cup quarter-finals, and there were fears the club would lose him for a fee set by a tribunal.

Onyedinma, 22, ended up signing a new three-year deal and showed flashes of excellence for Millwall last season, but only featured fleetingly as the side chased a topsix finish.

Millwall will have Tom Bradshaw back from injury for pre-season training, and boss Neil Harris also wants to add another striker.

It leaves Onyedinma’s long-term Lions future in doubt, only two seasons after he was thought of as the club’s next star.

At the other end of the pitch David Martin probably felt for the Baggies stopper, at the same end the Lions goalkeeper dropped Brighton’s Solly March’s free-kick over the line in their recent FA Cup quarter-final. Martin, meanwhile, had just one shot to save in 90 minutes, arcing his back to tip over Stefan Johansen’s half-volley. Martin also dived correctly and saw Jay Rodriguez’ penalty, from Jake Cooper’s foul on Dwight Gayle, whizz past the post.

Jackett pleased for Lions pair

FORMER MILLWALL boss Kenny Jackett caught up with Ben Thompson recently – and is pleased to hear the midfielder’s glowing reports about Portsmouth.

Thompson has shone for Millwall since returning from Pompey, and attended the Football League Trophy final on March 31 when Jackett’s side defeated Sunderland 5-4 on penalties in front of 85,021 fans at Wembley.

Jed Wallace, another ex-Portsmouth player and someone Jackett signed for Wolves, also made the trip to north London.

Jackett admitted he was disappointed to see Thompson recalled by Neil Harris in January. Thompson has praised Jackett after his time at Fratton Park, and his former boss is pleased with his role the 23-year-old’s development.

“I saw Ben Thompson and Jed Wallace at Wembley, both lads that I’ve

worked with before,” Jackett said this week.

“It was really good to see both of them and really good to see them back and supporting Portsmouth.

“I signed Jed Wallace up at Wolves and he is doing very well and obviously then there’s Ben. “Credit to Ben for what he did for us and now his parent club.

“We were disappointed to see him go back but we understand because that’s the loan market and that’s the loan system.

“As an individual, he gave everything for us. It’s good it has worked out for him.

“It’s a good feeling when you hear comments like that and it does give you a lot of satisfaction.

“He would have known more about Portsmouth being mates with Jed and living in south London.”

MILLWALL TRAVEL to Sheffield United almost a year to the day after they successfully defended their topsix place with a 1-1 draw at Brammall Lane.

Steve Morison scored in the 76th minute, two minutes after Leon Clarke had put the Blades in front.

The clubs are chasing very different objectives now. Millwall’s is clear: avoid relegation.

The Blades could yet grab a top-two spot, but will at least be contesting the play-offs as they aim for a second promotion in three years under Chris Wilder.

Wilder still has a number of players that won League One with 100 points in 2016-17, when Millwall were promoted through the play-offs. Eight of their squad from their 1-0 win at Preston last weekend were with them in 2017.

Wilder has also added older players on free transfers, such as David McGoldrick and Martin Cranie, and 33-year-old mainstays Billy Sharp and Mark Duffy have been key to an attack that has been exhilarating in the Championship this season.

campaign, and could yet finish top.

Harris was asked this week if he thought United would still be challenging for automatic promotion with five games left.

“Honestly, probably not,” he replied.

“Obviously they had a very good season last year and, like ourselves, only just missed out in the last few weeks of the season.

“What they’ve done is strengthened transfer window after transfer window

and developed what they’re doing up there.

“They’re a very tough team to play against, they’ve got a very good core group of players that have come through the British system and are good at this level.

“They have a manager that loves the club, and his passion shows in his team and the way he manages. They’ve done very well and I wish them every success – after Saturday.

“I enjoy watching them play and I’m a big Chris Wilder fan. That aside, all that matters to me Saturday is that Millwall get three points.”

This Saturday will be Millwall’s last 3pm kick-off time this season. They play Bristol City at 7.45pm on April 30, Wigan Athletic at 12.30pm on the final day, and their next three games see two 1pm starts and a 1.30pm start.

Harris doesn’t believe that will have any impact on results.

“I don’t think it really matters. I think the majority of my players prefer the early kick-off,” Harris said.

“The lads are up anyway. The staff get up early to have meetings and a lot of the lads have young kids now so are used to being up.

“The younger ones probably still enjoy their lie-in on a Saturday morning, but it makes no odds to us.”

Meanwhile, Shane Ferguson returns from suspension this weekend to give Harris another option on Millwall’s left flank.

Shaun Hutchinson has been ill recently and Harris was hoping he would be ready to resume training later this week.

MILLWALL UNDER-23 boss Kevin Nugent is pleased with the Den production line – but warned the Lions newest professionals: The hard work starts now.

Eight Millwall youngsters were offered their first professional contracts this month, including seventeen-year-old George Alexander, son of former Lions striker Gary.

Nugent believes the players all have “talent” but that won’t be enough on its own to “keep them in the building” over the next two years.

Nugent hailed Millwall’s “inclusive” environment, with senior boss Neil Harris and his staff sharing an office with those working with the youth teams.

“It’s good to get them coming through.

The lads have got their first pro contracts but the work really starts from then,” Nugent said.

“You’ll see all the top coaches in the country, all over the world, talking about character and personality. It’s something we’re really looking to work on with these players now.

“Hopefully they’ve already got that. The lads have all got talent, there’s no doubt about that, but what will keep them in the building will be that personality and character.

“If you look at the Championship it’s such a strong level now, the players are all athletic and physical. Technically they’re very good and have tactical nous as well.

“So these players have got to put all of

these pieces together and in the off-season make sure that they’re professional. That physical side and gym work is also crucial now.

“It is tough and it’s different than it was years ago. Now to break into the first team players need to be game-ready. There’s a lot of pressure on managers to win games, they can’t always afford to take risks.

“I think that every supporter, every owner of a football club, wants to see their own players coming through. But those players have to be good enough.”

Some coaches, such as Manchester United’s head of academy, Nicky Butt, have questioned the merits of under-23s football in developing players.

Nugent admits it isn’t perfect, but that sending players out to other clubs can help bridge the gap to the first team.

“These players need to be ready, and that’s why the loan system can be good,” he continued. “Danny McNamara has had a few good loan spells with some good clubs.

“If you work the loan system properly they’re getting experience playing in front of crowds, which is something we don’t really replicate in 23s football, which is a shame.

“From 23s to the first team there’s a big difference. You have to be able to acclimatise to it and cope with the different levels.

“We’ve got to make up some ground with it, particularly at Championship level.

I think it’s a good system.

“Not every player is going to come through, we’ve got to remember that as well. We’re hoping that the lads coming

through will be professional footballers somewhere – ideally with us.”

Nugent has been boss of the under-23s for almost two seasons, and praised the working environment at the training base on Calmont Road.

He said: “It’s fantastic here because it’s all very inclusive in how we work. We all share the same office, we talk about firstteam players, under-23 players, youthteam players. It’s a good environment in that respect.

“Since I’ve come in it’s been a great [coaching] group to work with, and they’re very understanding of the challenges of youth and 23s football.

“It’s beneficial when there’s stability at the football club.”

Meanwhile, Albert Hopkins, an Oxford United midfielder who is on trial with Millwall, scored for the under-23s in their 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest last Monday. The side are fourth in Professional Development League (South), with one game left this season.

Nugent has to accommodate first-team players in his Development Squad when they need competitive action, as well as trialists and those returning from injury.

“That is part of the job and our results probably reflect that a little this season when the team does change a lot, whether it be players going out on loan, trialists coming in or first-team players coming down.

“So you don’t get loads of time to really get a settled side and work on tactical stuff.

But you’re looking at, within the collective, getting a few individuals that stand out.”

Midfielder released as a youngster before a job in food catering EXCLUSIVE

RYAN LEONARD had the perfect response after being told he wasn’t good enough to be a professional footballer left him grating cheese for a living – he scored from the halfway line.

Millwall midfielder Leonard was cleaning his boots when he was given the devastating news by Peter Reid that he was being released by Plymouth.

Not only that, but former Sunderland boss Reid told him he didn’t have what it took to carve out a career in the game.

That was in 2011, when Leonard was eighteen years old, before he “flitted around” non-league as he pondered his next move.

His dad, David, who worked in Plymouth’s centre of excellence and is a former manager of Truro City, was a crucial support.

And like Steve Morison, who got a job shredding paper after his release

by Northampton, Leonard also had to find work to make ends meet.

That experience convinced him to give football another go after his Plymouth setback.

“I can remember like it was yesterday, it was a big turning point in my career. I remember being told, ‘you’re not good enough, you’re not going to make it’,” Leonard recalled.

“It was Peter Reid who was the manager at the time and I was cleaning my boots when he released me! It was kind of like, ‘cheers, sound’.

“It was a case of, I’ll pack my stuff and go then.

“I then had to try to prove people wrong, get back in the game and luckily enough my career took off from there which I’m grateful for.

“My old man was a big person at that time, he tried to keep me positive. I flitted around non-league a little bit until I managed to get a trial at Southend.

“It’s horrible, it’s not easy. It’s probably the worst part of football, you go from being at a professional club to being released and you have to start from nothing.

“Mentally getting back from that is probably the most difficult part.

That’s what youngsters have to work on more than anything after being released.

“It’s not the end of football, it’s not the end of your career. It’s one person’s opinion, or a few people’s that don’t think you’re good enough.

“I did a few part-time jobs to see what I liked doing. I worked in a gym, I worked in a catering company, cleaning, doing food preparation – and I absolutely hated it.

“Doing a few things like that made me realise, ‘this isn’t for me’. I realised there was only one way I wanted to go and that gave me extra motivation.

“I was only eighteen at the time but luckily enough I was living at home.

It was difficult, but needs must and you have to get by before you get back into football.

“You start again, start on the first

floor and the smaller contracts.”

Leonard got another opportunity with Southend, then in League Two, though he didn’t see it as a last roll of the dice.

“I don’t know about last shot because it was the first real trial I’d had,” he said. “And in terms of how trials go it couldn’t have gone any better. I scored three worldie goals in three pre-season games, it was one

where everything I touched turned to gold. It was crazy.

“I went there as a right-back, scored three times, one from the halfway line (against Great Wakering Rovers FC), believe it or not. I’ve never seen anything like it and the lads were laughing because any time I got the ball I was just shooting.

“It’s gone now, I don’t know what’s

happened!

“But it was a hell of a trial and I managed to get a contract with Paul Sturrock. I’ve built from there and the rest is history.”

Leonard’s first contract was £200 a week, but he admits it’s the memory of slogging away in a kitchen that drives him every day.

He continued: “Without a doubt.

You go away to teams like Leeds and Sheffield United and you think seven or eight years ago you were grating cheese or whatever it was in a kitchen. It’s crazy how the world works.

“You have to start at the bottom to build yourself up. That’s the biggest thing for players being released, you have to start again. You haven’t got a choice, you can’t just go into big clubs.

“I owe a lot to Southend, they kickstarted my career and gave me my opportunity. I owe them a hell of a lot.”

At Southend, Leonard became only the second player in the club’s history – after Ron Pountney – to be awarded the club’s player of the year award three times.

It’s something he would be honoured to win once at Millwall, though it’s not his main priority this season.

“I think I got three in four years at Southend, which was a hell of an achievement from having no contract at all,” he said.

“If it were to happen, great. But the main thing for us is to get points and get safe in the division.

“We’d give up everything for that at the moment. That’s all we need to do over the next three weeks.”

On Saturday, Leonard will visit another of his former clubs, Sheffield United. It didn’t work out for him there either, but there was no shortage of offers and Millwall broke their club record to sign him.

Leonard was part of United’s promotion push last season, and thinks they will be see losing out on a top-two place this campaign as a disappointment.

“It’ll be nice to go back and see a few familiar faces, a few people I’ve not seen in a while,” Leonard said.

“It’s an important game for us and them. It’s going to be a great atmosphere.

“Last season when I was there we tailed off a little bit. The aim this season was probably to be up and around that end of the table. The lads have done an unbelievable job to be touching the top two, they’ve had a great season.

“The aim for them now is the top two and anything below that they’ll be very disappointed with.

“We need to go up there and try and stamp our authority on the game and do what we do. We’re fighting for everything at the moment.”

NEIL HARRIS insists his players will not be intimidated by the Sheffield United atmosphere this weekend.

Bramall Lane is set to be sold out for the clash between one side fighting to stay in the division and another who hope to depart the Championship for the Premier League.

Millwall have an allocation of 1,300 tickets for the clash, as they target a fourth away league win of 2019.

It was a cauldron of noise when the Lions claimed a point at United last season.

“We don’t get intimidated anywhere, we don’t get fazed by anything,” Harris said. “Once you’ve played at The Den numerous times playing anywhere else is not a problem.

“Nothing surpasses The Den. Elland Road and our start in that game, how well we played, was testament to how we handle those occasions.

“It’ll be a great occasion at Bramall Lane, as it will be at Villa Park in the following game, as it was at Elland Road.

“This is why we want to play at this level and get the points on the board to stay in this division.

“I’ve spoken about what a privilege it is to manage at this level and how important it is for us as a club to play at this level.

“All that matters to us is amassing the points to stay here. Year after year this league seems to get better.”

Meanwhile, Ryan Leonard wants his team-mates to “silence” the home crowd this weekend.

Leonard joined the Lions from United last summer.

He said: “There are some tough places to go in this division and the crowds are big, they get behind the team.

“I had a six-month spell there and the fans were brilliant, to be fair. But our job is to try and silence them. We need to start the game right and I think that’ll be the biggest thing the gaffer talks about beforehand.”

MILLWALL HAVE monitored Aberdeen striker Sam Cosgrove as they eye summer reinforcements in attack.

Cosgrove, 22, has scored 20 goals this season – including six doubles – after moving to the Scottish Premiership from Carlisle in January 2018 for £40,000.

Cosgrove started his career with Wigan before playing non-league football for Barrow and North Ferriby and then joining Carlisle in August 2017.

He was sent off on his Dons debut just eight minutes after coming on as a substitute against Celtic and didn’t score in his first sixteen games for the club.

But he has hit the afterburners since, grabbing 20 in his last 28 games to fire Derek McInnes’ side to fourth in the table as they chase a Europa League place.

After being runners-up to Celtic in the League Cup, they face Neil Lennon’s side again in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden Park this Sunday.

Yorkshire-born Cosgrove is over 6ft tall, a physical asset that could see him fit the bill for Millwall. Steve Morison is likely to sign a new deal, but the Lions are in the market for their captain’s long-term replacement.

“To score 20 goals in the Premiership isn’t easy for a young man like him. To shoulder that responsibility speaks volumes for him,” McInnes said.

“We had loads of bids in for strikers but didn’t have the money to go the extra mile. He had to win the internal battle first but he’s led the line well.

“It’s easy for me to recognise the hard work he does and it’s now being recognised by others.”
