OVER FIVE hundred people attended a pre-planned open day at an Elephant and Castle mosque days after the New Zealand shooting in a show of solidarity.

The ‘Tea and Tour’ open day at Harper Road’s Baitul Aziz mosque on Sunday, two days after a terrorist shooting left fifty dead in New Zealand mosques, was attended by an estimated five hundred to six hundred people over five hours.

The mosque threw open its doors to the public with a series of stalls to answer common questions about Islam.

Figures of different faiths and politicalfrom all backgrounds attended the event in a show of support with the Muslim community.

“New Zealand, I think it strengthened everyone’s resolve and solidarity,” said Mohammed Uddin, one of the mosque’s trustees.

“More people came than would have, and the response was more intense.

“The mosque is a place of worship, everyone was praying for them [the victims], especially at Friday prayers, we made a special mention of it.”

The Dean of Southwark Cathedral also attended the mosque to offer “condolences” said Mr Uddin. “We were very thankful for the concern he’s shown.”

Musharraf Chaudhry, chair of the Southwark Multifaith Forum, added it was comforting that people of all faiths and none took the time out “to be with us supporting us and comforting us at this very emotionally difficult time.”

“People came from the Cathedral and local churches came in large numbers and were amazing.”

Stalls debunked common myths about Islam said Mr Chaudhry, with some attendees not previously realising “how dearly we hold Christ in the Islamic faith.”

“People fall into the trap of ‘them and us’”, Mr Uddin, one of the mosque’s trustees, added.

“It’s a narrative we don’t have control over but we’d like to try to change it.”

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has expressed its solidarity with the victims of the Christchurch terror attack in New Zealand, which left 50 dead.

In a statement on behalf of the council on Friday, council leader Peter John (pictured) condemned the “horrific” gun atrocity at the city’s Al Noor and Linwood mosques.

The suspect, Brenton Harrison Tarrant, who is a 28-year-old Australian citizen, has been charged with murder.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by the shocking attacks in Christchurch,” said the council’s statement.

“In Southwark, we know only too well the terrible harm caused by terrorism, but we also know that our community is strongest when we come together and unite against evil.”

Echoing Jacinda Ardern’s message that the unprecedented act “is one of New Zealand’s darkest days,” the statement added: “We send our love to the people of Christchurch on this darkest of days.”

Other London boroughs have also expressed their solidarity with the victims of the attack.

GOOSE GREEN Primary School and Nursery wants to kit its kids out with virtual reality headsets, so they can travel the world and visit the moon without leaving the classroom.

DULWICH KIDS TO GET TO THE MOON ‘overwhelming’, as they could see and experience places and things they would never normally be able to see.

But it’s not just for fun, as the headsets help children develop their speaking and writing skills.

Teacher Ms Seminerio said virtual reality helped “immerse the children in a new world”.

She said: “For example, we may be writing about a desert island; some children may have never been to the beach or even know what sand and the sea look like.

“By submerging them in a virtual 3D world they can gain vital experiences and exposure to sights, sounds and reality that were previous unavailable

A FALLEN tree smashed three cars on a Bermondsey road because of the windy weather – and now will be turned into furniture by a local youth charity.

The rotting poplar tree fell during heavy winds on Grange Road, landing directly onto three cars parked outside the Artesian Health Centre.

Luckily nobody was injured during the incident on March 7, although at least one of the cars was severely damaged.

Goldfinch Furniture, a social enterprise staffed by sixteen to twenty-five year-olds who “perhaps made a couple of bad

choices in their life” has taken the tree and are planning on turning the wood into a table or two.

Charlie Jopling, Goldfinch’s operations manager, told the News: “It’s a poplar tree so it means that it’s a hardwood, so we’re going to build furniture out of it.”

The furniture social enterprise spoke to the tree surgeons who arrived to deal with the fallen lumber, and they even delivered

it to Goldfinch’s workshop on Spa Road.

The tree needs to dry out before it can be turned into sustainable furniture.

“The next stage is to mill it,” said Mr Jopling. “Probably next week we’ll cut it into slivers lengthways and then we’ll put in our yard for about a year or so until it dries.

“We haven’t decided yet what it’s going to be. I imagine a good piece like this will

be a table or two, or chopping boards.”

Goldfinch is run by the London Reclaimed charity and helps people such as ex-offenders or those who have had substance misuse issues to gain access to employment.

It also makes the furniture for another one of the charity’s social enterprises, a coffee-shop called Lumberjack in Camberwell.

MILLWALL’S CHAIRMAN CALLS FOR LEWISHAM TO SCRAP CONDITIONAL LAND AGREEMENT AROUND DEN

MILLWALL’S CHAIRMAN has called on Lewisham Council to scrap a conditional land sale agreement for areas surrounding the Den, saying the club will not spend money on its development plans until it does.

Lewisham Council is due to make an announcement about the conditional sale agreement in “due course.”

If scrapped, it would see the end of a seven-year battle that had raised the prospect of the club being forced out of Bermondsey.

The council had sought a compulsory purchase order (CPO) to seize the land surrounding the Den after the club refused to sell, but it was abandoned in 2017.

The three plots would have been given over the Renewal for their use as part of the New Bermondsey development.

However, despite the abandoned CPO, the conditional sale agreement still in force

between town hall bosses and the developer Renewal meant the process could have been restarted all over again.

In a message to fans in Sunday’s programme against Brighton, the club’s chairman, John Berylson, said the club’s board could not agree to spending money on their own plans for the Den and the land surrounding it with the agreement still in place.

“We are asking our council and Renewal to remove this obstacle, which will demonstrate that we are true partners in these plans and are not wasting the club’s time and its owners’ money,” Mr Berylson said.

The agreement meant that the club faced the prospect of spending up to £1million on the plans for the land while it was technically promised to Renewal, he said.

The move follows months of “constructive” talks between the club, the developer Renewal and Damien Egan, mayor of Lewisham.

DOCTORS’ WARNING 10 YEARS ON FROM JADE

ON THE tenth anniversary of Jade Goody’s death, doctors warn that the number of women taking up their cervical smear appointments is falling, with young women in Southwark even less likely to have the potentially life-saving test.

Big Brother star Jade, who grew up in Bermondsey’s Dickens Estate, died on March 22, 2009, Mother’s Day, at just 27 after being diagnosed with advance with cervical cancer.

In the years after her death, her story was credited with greater awareness of the disease, in particular in younger women.

But doctors have warned her legacy is now in jeopardy after cervical screening uptake has plummeted nationally – despite the fact screening can catch cancer before it even develops.

Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group has warned that in Southwark, only a third of women aged 25-49 attend the appointments they are invited to by their GP. The same figure is higher for women aged 50-64, but still below target, with nearly a quarter of women missing the screenings.

London Cancer Alliance, said: "Every year there are more than 3,000 new cases of cervical cancer and nearly 900 hundreds deaths in the UK. This is a tragedy given that it is preventable.

"Although a cervical smear test can be a bit uncomfortable, it can detect changes that could develop into cancer if left. If you're nervous about having it done you could speak to your GP or practice nurse or take someone with you. Please have it done if it's due – it could save your life!"

Charity Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust says millennials put off or avoid altogether their smear tests because they feel scared of or embarrassed about the procedure, or worried about the result.

Dr Phillippa Kaye, author, GP and Ambassador of Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust said: “Across the UK nurses and doctors take millions of smear tests every year.

“We honestly don’t think about what you’re wearing, what you look like, whether or not you’ve shaved - we just want to offer the best test we can to as many women as possible.

“We’ve seen and heard it all before and want to put your mind at ease if you have questions or concerns. Ask the things you want to know and remember you can say stop any time - it’s your test.”

POLICE SEARCH FOR ‘CAMBERWELL FLASHER’

POLICE ARE appealing for help identifying a man who is said to have followed a nineteen-year-old woman out of a shop in Camberwell and demanded sex, before exposing himself.

The incident allegedly took place at around 8.45pm on Monday, January 28 when the 19-year-old victim was shopping in a convenience store in

Camberwell Road.

It is claimed the suspect stared at her through the windows and told her he wanted to have sex with her as she left the shop. Despite being told to leave her alone, he is said to have followed her along Burgess Park and into Addington Square.

At the well-lit junction of Rust Square, police said that she confronted him and started filming him to make him stop.

At that point she is said to have realised he had exposed himself, whereupon she

threw water over him, left the area, and called police.

Detective constable Nicky Dixon said: "This was a very frightening incident, on a young woman who was picked out by a man who then followed, harassed and then exposed himself to her.

"She acted bravely and confronted him, and thankfully he left.

"We need to find and arrest this man and I am appealing to the public to assist."

Officers are now circulating the

images taken by the victim, which show a dark-skinned black man believed to be 25-30 years of age and around 5ft 6 inches tall.

He is described as having a local accent and, at the time of the incident, was wearing a grey hooded top under a dark coloured jacket, black tracksuit trousers and black trainers.

Council pays for FREE theatre for all primary schools

PRIMARY SCHOOL children in the borough will get a free visit to the theatre every year, the council announced last week.

The £500,000 scheme will see all primary schoolchildren aged between five and eleven receive the free theatre journey in a bid to promote the arts.

The move will affect over 20,000 kids in state primary schools in Southwark, including looked-after children and those being schooled while in hospital.

The borough has nineteen theatres, ranging from the world-famous Shakespeare’s Globe to smaller experimental performance spaces,

while an estimated thirty further venues are located within easy distance of the borough’s primary schools.

Announcing the scheme, Cllr Rebecca Lury, cabinet member for culture, leisure, equalities and communities, said Southwark was “extremely lucky” have such a vibrant creative community.

“From Shakespeare’s Globe, to The Bridge, Theatre Peckham and The Blue Elephant, the cultural landscape in Southwark is incredibly rich and reflective of the diverse communities they serve,” she said.

“We know that the benefits of a rich cultural environment are significant, bringing together social and generational groups, increasing interactions amongst communities,

and providing a way to share knowledge and skills.”

She added the move showed the council’s “commitment” to culture in the borough, saying: “With over 20,000 primary school age children in our borough, we are playing our part in opening the doors to them to new experiences and broadening their horizons.”

The programme will expressly work with schools in areas of higher deprivation, the council said, with resources focusj6ed on schools which do not have a history of theatre attendance.

To support the scheme, a website will be created to match schools to theatre opportunities, including discounted theatre tickets.

The inspiration that is superfan Harvey

A MILLWALL supporter running a half-marathon after being inspired by Harvey Brown, the ten-year-old superfan who has the rare Morquio syndrome, has raised over £5,000 for charity.

Steve Rendell, from Reading, is running the challenging London Landmarks Half Marathon in aid of the MPS society, a charity helping those affected by a body of rare life-limiting conditions.

Millwall fanatic Harvey, a common sight at the club’s games, has the rare Morquio syndrome which stunts

skeletal growth, leaving sufferers with weak bones, a tendency to develop heart disease, and impaired vision and hearing.

The little Bermondsey boy, who lives just a stone’s throw away from The Den, is just one of 78 children in the UK with the disease.

“Harvey is always so chirpy and a really lovely lad. After seeing Harvey lead out Millwall that day and just seeing how brave he is has inspired me to tackle the London Landmarks Half Marathon,” said Steve.

“By taking on what is a big challenge for me, I want to raise awareness around this rare disease and also to help people like Harvey by raising

money for the MPS Society to fund research and medical support.”

The money raised from the halfmarathon, which takes place on March 24, will help provide professional support to people and families affected

by MPS syndromes – of which Morquio is one.

Harvey will be made a VIP for the day of the half-marathon, so that he is able to cheer Steve on from the finish line.

Harvey’s doting dad, Dean, said the family was hugely thankful to Steve and to Millwall for all the support they had given.

“What Steve is doing means a lot to us as a family,” he said.

“Harvey has such a rare disorder and the MPS Society is such a small charity that we need support like this to help Harvey and others like him.

“We have had huge support from Millwall Football Club and we must

thank them hugely for helping Harvey and without them Steve wouldn’t have heard about Harvey.

We can’t wait to go to central London to watch the half marathon and see Steve cross the finish line.”

Around 13,000 other runners will take part in the half-marathon alongside Steve to raise money for good causes.

THREE SUSPECTED burglars who have so far evaded capture by police are among 38 mugshots of wanted people displayed on the side of two vans driven around London, to try and help track them down.

The Met says the majority of the 38 are wanted in connection with violent moped-enabled crime, street robberies, burglaries and violating the conditions of a previous release from custody or jail.

Three believed to have targeted residents in Southwark include Anton Krasnioi, aged 38, whom police want to question over four burglaries across Dulwich between May 2015 and October 2017, where properties in Woodhall Drive, Allison Grove and Dulwich Village were targeted.

Forty-year-old Michaela Alldis is wanted in connection with two burglaries at the same Nunhead property on Monteagle Way, SE15, on January 23 and June 7, last year, where cash was stolen. She is also believed to have been involved in a home burglary in Bermondsey's Rephidim Street in SE1, when jewellery was stolen.

And Simon Marcus Rhodes-Butler, aged 42, is wanted in connection with three Crystal Palace burglaries at flats in Belvedere Road, SE20, on

POLICE ARE increasingly concerned for the welfare of a missing sixteen-year-old girl who is known to frequent Burgess Park and the Elephant and Castle areas.

Valerie Calle, 16, was last seen on Monday, March 4, leaving her family home in Thamesmead, Greenwich.

She is 5ft 9ins tall, of slim build with shoulder length black hair which she normally has tied up.

She wears glasses and has a distinctive flower tattoo on the inside of her left forearm. It is not known what clothes she might be wearing.

Pensioner charged with firearm offence

A SEVENTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD man has been charged after officers found a rifle in the boot of a car in Peckham earlier this month.

Arthur Horton, from Mina Road in Walworth, has been charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life.

He was remanded in custody and will appear at Woolwich Crown Court on April 5.

Officers say a fifty-year-old man has also been released under investigation.

The weapon was found during a stop and search on March 7.

Police said her disapprearance was “out of character” and that they and her family are “increasingly concerned” for her wellbeing.

The missing teen is also known to frequent Croydon areas.

A MAN from Kennington is one of six people now convicted of gun offences after police seized a huge haul of firearms and more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition.

Mishak Wright-Martin, aged 33, from Kennington Park Road, was found guilty of conspiracy to sell or transfer ammunition last December and will be sentenced on April 3 at Croydon Crown Court along with five others.

The court heard how the criminal group started to operate after German national Manfred Kurz, who moved to the UK in 2004 and had previously served with the German army, smuggled ammunition into the country, which he and his niece, Sian Alexandra Miller, began illegally to sell.

In February 2018 Miller’s home in Stanger Road in South Norwood was searched by Trident officers, who found 1,800 rounds of ammunition and two pistols and CS spray.

Afterwards, officers raided her uncle's address in Ashburton Road, Croydon, where they found 'a large quantity of black explosive power', a live .357 calibre cartridge and bullet-making equipment. He was arrested the same day.

Police discovered that Millers' cousin, Lukas Duncan, 22, from Guildford Avenue in Surbiton, was involved, and 28-year-old Lorenzo Brooks, from

Catford's Crutchley Road.

By April 2018, they had also identified Sierra Denton, now aged 21, as an accomplice and found more ammunition at her home in South Norwood's Cromer Road.

BACKPACKS ISSUED TO PUPILS TO MONITOR POLLUTION

PUPILS AT an Elephant and Castle primary school will be given modified backpacks with air quality sensors, as part of project to monitor their exposure to dangerous fumes.

Pupils at the Charlotte Sharman Primary School will be among the 250 students at five schools taking part in a week-long trial wearing the air quality monitoring bags to record pollution levels during an average day.

Data from the specially-designed backpacks will then be analysed by scientists at King’s College to figure out the points at which youngsters are most exposed to air pollution, and how to tackle it.

Schools in Greenwich, Richmond, Hammersmith and Fulham and Haringey will also be given the kit, co-designed by Dyson and King’s College.

City Hall estimates the policy could cut harmful emissions in central London by up to 45 per cent.

FORMER SOUTHWARK council tenants who bought their homes under right-to-buy have made a staggering £350million in profit since 2000, data published last Thursday reveals.

The data was unearthed as part of an investigation into Right to Buy by the BBC, and has been shared with local outlets such as the News.

It reveals that 2,959 Southwark homes which were originally purchased under Right to Buy were then sold on by their owners between the year 2000 and April 2018.

Each sale made an average profit of nearly £120,000 – an average profit of £64 for every day of owning the home.

According to the data two Southwark tenants who bought their homes under Right to Buy, the flagship policy introduced by Margaret Thatcher, sold them on just seven days later.

Most stayed in their homes for nearly seven years before selling it on.

Nationally, £6.4bn of profit has been made.

The scheme helps eligible council tenants in England to buy their home with a discount of up to £108,000.

Tenants selling within the first five years must repay part of the discount back to the council, and if sold within the first ten years local authorities must be given a first right-of-refusal on the sale.

As the News has previously reported, council bosses have pushed for the government to allow for a number of changes to Right to Buy applications.

Detective Constable Alex Atkinson, said: "We have carried out extensive enquiries to locate the man who was captured on CCTV fleeing the scene of this cowardly attack.

“Due to the location, it is possible that the man lives outside of London and may commute via Waterloo.

"Do you recognise him or the description of his clothing? I am also yet to hear from the woman who was at the scene.

“I would urge anyone with information to contact us."

KING’S IS THE FIRST IN LONDON Astrosnacks: 'Hoax' TO FLY AIR AMBULANCE 24/7 circulated to Southwark parents about cereal bars causing hallucinations

THE HELIPAD at King's College Hospital will now operate 24/7, making its air ambulance the first in London to fly throughout the night.

During a two-year trial starting imminently, the trauma centre will be able to take critically injured patients from across the south east by air between 9pm and 7am, after approval from Lambeth Council.

The helipad on King's roof opened in 2016 and since then has cut the time it takes to transfer patients from helicopter to hospital by 25 minutes.

Previously, the air ambulance would land in Ruskin Park, next door and then travel a short distance by busy roads.

Until now, London was the only European capital not to have a similar helipad operating throughout the night.

Rob Bentley, a surgeon who specialises in head, neck and facial surgery, and is clinical director of the South East London Kent and Medway Trauma Network, committed to raise the funds needed to put the helipad in place, with the aim of eventually making the service 24/7.

TWO ARRESTED AFTER MOPED COLLISION

Supposed ‘Astrosnacks’ have caused concern among parents after social media posts warned they were being sold to children, making them hallucinate and become violently ill.

The ‘hoax’ was spread to Southwark parents after a London Trading Standards email was routinely passed onto the 150 schools in the borough by the council.

At least one school then posted the warning on its site, despite London Trading Standards saying the message was not intended to be made public.

A Bermondsey primary school shared the now-deleted warning on its website saying it had received an email about “[a] fake snack bar called ‘Astrosnacks’ – are being sold to children.

“They cause people to be violently sick and have severe hallucinations.

“The Met Police has been warning schools and parents to be alert. They are being sold around Islington, Highgate and Archway but may move into other parts of London.”

The message was also emailed directly to parents of children at a Peckham secondary school.

In response, one concerned Southwark resident said on social media: “If a school is concerned enough to post about this there is probably some truth to it.”

However, another parent said: “It seems like it could be a hoax.”

London Trading Standards told the News that it “has not issued a warning to schools in relation to these alleged fake snack bars.”

“We received an unverified report from a journalist about these bars and circulated this to fellow trading standards colleagues for

information,” said Stephen Knight, LTS Operations Manager.

“This was not intended to be forwarded to schools or parents, as the report remains as yet unverified.”

The Met Police also said it had not received any crime reports about it and that the allegation of a sweet being sold to children which causes hallucinations was unsubstantiated.

“Police have been made aware of an incident involving a possibly fake snack bar called 'Astrosnacks,'” said a Met Police spokesman.

“No crime report has been made and the allegation has not been substantiated.

“Police have not been able to speak directly to the parties who were apparently affected.

“As a matter of routine, and to safeguard young people, police have passed this information to schools local to the incident.”

Escape artist: Is this your snake?

A BABY corn snake was found hiding in a garden shed by a surprised Sydenham resident last week.

The RSPCA, who were called out to rescue the orange and white patterned reptile, are now appealing for its owner to get in touch so they can be reunited.

According to the charity, the 25 centimetre reptile is in good condition and is likely to be an escaped pet.

It was found by a Lower Sydenham resident on Monday, March 11.

She was able to contain it in a secure box before calling the RSPCA.

Animal collection officer, Mat Hawkins, said: “This stunning corn snake must have given the householder quite a surprise.

"It’s not every day you find a snake in your garden shed.

“The little reptile is in good condition, and at around 25 cm long, is likely a hatchling.

"Corn snakes are not native to Britain and would not be able to survive for long in the wild here, so it is probably a pet that has come from someone’s home.

“If someone is missing this lovely corn snake, we would encourage them to contact us via our appeals line number on 0300 123 8018.

Appeal to find Bobbie the kitten’s brothers and sisters

AN ANIMAL shelter has launched an appeal to help find the siblings of Bobbie the kitten, after a man in Borough allegedly tried to give him away to passers-by.

The Celia Hammond Trust say they’re concerned for the wellbeing of Bobbie’s brothers and sisters, as well as his mother cat, as the man appeared to be struggling with looking after them.

The unknown man, who is described as being black and in his thirties, approached a couple walking on Union Street on Saturday with Bobbie in a cat carrier and tried to give him away, saying there were “three more kittens at his mother’s home in Elephant and Castle but that he couldn’t catch them.”

While talking to the couple he opened the carrier – and frightened Bobbie jumped out onto the busy road.

Luckily, the couple managed to chase after him and bundle him up in a coat, rescuing him from the oncoming traffic.

“The poor little mite landed in the road, it was highly dangerous,” said Lesley Mills, rescue and rehoming manager at the charity’s Lewisham branch.

“The kitten is now in our care, he’s fine [but] he’s very frightened, he’s had a terrible time.”

The shelter suspects that the man, who disappeared during the commotion, has a mother who lives in the Elephant and Castle area who is struggling to cope with catching the skittish kittens.

If a litter of new-born kittens are not handled properly, they can become skittish and frightened, and would scratch and resist anyone trying to pick them up.

“We think she lives at the Elephant and Castle, but we’ve got no actual location, so we don’t know where to start really,” said Ms Mills.

“I suspect his mother could be elderly, it could be that she just can’t pick them up, she may have medical issues – I just don’t know.”

Now the shelter wants anyone who knows the man or his mother to urgently get in touch, so that they can help – saying there is no judgement on the mystery man.

“If anyone knows who the owner of the cats is, please get in touch with us.

We’re here to help not judge,” added the rehoming manager.

“We could attend today as soon as we get the information – this is quite urgent.”

DLD College London students race towards inclusivity with inspirational talk

o celebrate LGBT History Month, 250 students from over 55 nationalities recently gathered in the atrium of DLD College London for an eyeopening talk by transgender racing driver, Charlie Martin.

Charlie, who is also an ambassador for inclusivity in sport for StoneWallUK, visited the Westminster Bridge-based college where she delivered an honest and powerful talk about what it takes to succeed in sport. Charlie shared with the DLD cohort the challenges that she has to face in life and in her career, as a result of her gender transition in such a traditionally male-dominated world as motorsports.

Students were inspired by Charlie’s messages of hope, as she gave motivational lessons on resilience and never giving up.

The highly-admired speaker is now a successful GT driver, who is well respected by the media and her fellow competitors. With various wins and podium finishes in international racing events already under her belt, Charlie is now preparing to become the first transgender woman to compete at the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Charlie Martin (Centre) visits DLD College London Director of Studies at DLD, Gareth Evans commented, “Whilst Charlie continues to work hard to make history, we will support

some of the most poignant messages she gave to our students: that being free to be whoever you want to be and being

I am always grateful for the hard work of women MPs including my Southwark neighbour, Harriet Harman, to reform Parliament and enable more women than every before to become MPs through initiatives like all women shortlists, and reforming the hours that Parliament sits, there is still more to do to ensure that our Parliament fully reflects the communities across the country that it serves, including tackling the abuse that many women politicians are subjected to online, so that women are not deterred from standing for public office.

The impact of nine years of Tory and Lib Dem austerity has been felt most keenly by women.

Whether as mums, carers, in work or in retirement, women have borne the brunt of the

cuts to our public services and welfare system. A Labour government would ensure that WASPI women born in the 1950s who are being denied years of pension payments; carers who lack support and working mums struggling to cover the cost of childcare, are receive the help they need.

Larger companies now have to publish their gender pay gap – the difference in the amount that men and women are paid at work. This is helpful in shining a light on pay inequality, revealing a shocking gender pay gap in some industries,

although as yet there is unfortunately no mechanism to address this.

The ‘International’ in International Women’s Day is also important. It is a day to remember women and girls across the world who still don’t have access to the basic rights and freedoms that we take for granted, like healthcare and education. Access to education and healthcare, participation in democracy and freedom from harassment and violence at work and in the home must be secured for every girl, no

matter where she lives.

Back in the UK it is important that we tackle period poverty. The estimated average cost of basic period products over the course of a woman’s life is £4,800, and last year 137,000 girls in the UK missed school last year because they couldn’t afford period protection. No young woman should miss school for this reason, so I’m supporting a campaigning led by one of our unions, the CWU to make period products free to everyone who needs them, so that every girl can fulfil her potential.

AST FRIDAY, thousands of kids marched in the London “Friday’s for Future” student strike demanding urgent action on the climate crisis.

Tens of thousands of kids likewise marched in cities, in over 100 countries, all across the globe.

This was the 2nd climate student-strike in the UK, following the first in February. Following that student strike, the Lib Dem MP Layla Moran initiated the first Parliamentary debate in over two years on the climate emergency.

Barely 50 MPs attended the debate, revealing the stark lack of seriousness with which MPs are

taking this existential emergency. Not a single one of Southwark’s three Labour MPs spoke. I guess having voted for a massive explosion of carbon emissions, from the proposed huge expansion of Heathrow Airport, Harriet Harman MP and Neil Coyle MP dared not speak, knowing how deeply hypocritical it would have been, to claim they want serious action on climate breakdown.

As I wrote last year, the UN Secretary General says that unless humanity starts cutting carbon emissions radically in the next 18 months, humanity & nature face extinction from runaway climate catastrophe. As children born this year in Southwark will be 81 years old in 2100, this means that they are likely to be facing a planet plagued with repeated lethal heat waves, fires, floods and famines, in their lifetimes.

Global emissions have risen every year since the Paris Climate Summit was signed in 2015. There is no sign that Southwark’s politicians have any intention of taking the depth of urgent action needed. The current political system is failing Southwark’s kids both locally and nationally.

It is time for us to take action ourselves. If any Southwark kids want to get in touch with the national and global kids “Fridays for Future” movement their website is fridaysforfuture.org.

AS ANYONE from Bermondsey had quite an impact in such a short space of time as Jady Goody? She was the loud, outrageous, and gaffe-prone girlnext-door of East Anglia and Rio de Janeiro fame, who grew up on the Dickens Estate and rose as a celebrity after appearing as a 2002 Big Brother contestant.

By her own admission, she never had much of an education and childhood was hard as she cared for her mother after she lost her arm in a car accident, whilst her father was estranged.

These experiences, combined with an ability to laugh at herself, buckets of charm, and a canny nose for business, led her to take her fifteen minutes of fame and grasp it, and build a better life for her two sons.

After her cervical cancer was diagnosed and found to be incurable, she died with her family by her side. In the weeks leading up to her death she bravely shared her experience as she moved closer to death.

Her campaign for women to attend their smear tests and avoid dying young from a largely preventable disease became her legacy.

Once the butt of many jokes, after her death, then-prime minister Gordon Brown said: ‘The whole country has admired her determination to provide a bright future for her children’, and David Cameron said ‘her legacy will be to save the lives of more young women in the future.’

At her funeral cortege, then Bermondsey MP Simon Hughes summed it when he told reporters: "Bermondsey was where Jade grew up. She was representative of this community.

“People are saying 'Well done girl – you didn't have the easiest start but you turned it to good.'"

In the years after her death, screening rates shot up.

How sad that on the tenth anniversary of her passing, cervical screening uptake across the nation is now at the lowest since records began.

Doctors are now warning that fear, embarrassment, and body shame are putting women off attending, especially ‘millennials’ in their 20s.

Some of them will be too young to remember the reality TV star and her death.

But they should take a leaf out of her book – grab opportunities with both hands and don’t let embarrassment get in your way.

On Friday, spare a thought for Jade, a true Bermondsey girl whose time was cut short - and open that letter you’ve been ignoring. It could save your life.

PETS AREN’T an unusual sight on the 188 bus, which runs along Rotherhithe, Bermondsey and Elephant and Castle.

But more novel was a passenger on Monday who decided to transport her white rat by stashing him away in her hood, with no means of preventing the bus-riding rodent from jumping out and running amok.

TfL’s terms and conditions stipulate pets are allowed on-board so long as the driver judges them to be an “inoffensive animal” and they’re “in a suitable container.”

A hood then is judged a suitable pet container by at least one 188 driver. And while the driver might have judged the cute critter as inoffensive, some commuters disagreed.

One simply wrote a string of sick-faced emojis in response to a picture sneakily taken by another passenger and posted on Facebook.

Coppers’ cuisine

TWO WEEKS ago, we pondered what the food at Walworth Police station might be like, after one Google reviewer criticised the meals being served to those in custody.

“Don’t get the lasagne, the cheese is butter, it’s disgusting,” advised the commentator in their assessment of the coppers’ cooking skills.

Turns out it’s not just plod’s pasta that’s in the

firing line. The sweet and sour chicken with rice was “terrible”, one reader tells us, while another adds: “[The] sausage and beans was cold.”

People in custody are no longer served bread and water, but it’s not-so-clear the meals they’re being given instead are much of an improvement.

Privately seething

IF, LIKE Dulwich College, you’ve been around for four hundred years, you’re bound to make an enemy or two.

On Tuesday evening, the College’s Wikipedia site was less than favourably edited by a mystery user in Leeds, whose other encyclopaedic contributions are listed as the X-Factor and TV series Benidorm.

Dulwich College is “utter garbage”, they quite unfairly changed the introduction to read, because everyone who goes there is “weird.”

It showed up as the second result on Google until the entry was amended twenty minutes later by a more responsible netizen.

Which old Alleynians could have possibly inspired the user’s ire? The list includes quiz-show The Chase’s Paul Sinha, the Chemical Brothers’ Ed Simons, and Brexiteer Nigel Farage.

roles of Dating Agent and Waiter if he’d been given more time in the spotlight. He did, though, make the most of his parts and got a big cheer at the end that showed our appreciation of his involvement and in-put.

There were new songs to add to the classic theme tune, mainly written by the writers Jim Sullivan and Paul Whitehouse, with Bit of a Sort being the stand out number of the show, and the one that introduced us to Oscar ConlonMorrey. Chas Hodges also had a hand in creating the music for this modern classic.

No, you won’t see the theatre elite kneesing up to the Chas & Dave songs here, but the world of theatre is a better place for it.

Waitress is classy and slick

THE NEWEST production making the leap across the pond to the West End is the Broadway smash hit musical, Waitress. Based on the late Adrienne Shelly’s indie movie hit of the same name, Waitress is a heartfelt but admittedly lightweight story of a woman trapped in an unhappy, abusive marriage, coping with her lot as best she knows how – by baking pies, writes Rosie O’Connell.

Jenna, played by Katharine McPhee, dreams of her freedom and when there is $20,000 up for grabs at a local baking competition she can finally see her way out. When Jenna realises she is pregnant, however, she finds herself at Dr Pomatter’s, her married gynaecologist’s office, and becomes drawn to his awkward, empathetic manner that could potentially present a different sort of escape.

The all-female writing and creative team (a first for Broadway and the West End alike) create a show that is full of feeling and tension that is guided through by Sara Bareilles’ wonderfully pop-folk music and lyrics, and expertly sprinkled with comedic moments from Jessie Nelson’s book. The show balances two sides, there is the serious, sometimes painfully honest, moments from Jenna’s reluctant acceptance of motherhood, to the portrayal of the deadbeat, abusive husband, Earl (Peter Hannah). But then there is the light, frivolous, sex comedy side, filled with eyebrow raising episodes. Yes the piece is full of sugar but it is not without its added spice either. It seems that the balance is relatively well judged; the characters are flawed and morally ambiguous and yet so overwhelmingly likeable.

There, too, doesn’t seem to be a weak link in the casting. Reprising her Broadway role, Katharine McPhee’s simultaneous vulnerability, warmth and aching sadness as Jenna, exudes into the audience, making her confessional

lament of a showstopper, “She Used to Be Mine”, even more heart-rending with her powerful voice seeming to lift the roof off. Outstanding too is David Hunter as the self-effacing, clumsy, yet endearing Doctor who takes more than a professional interest in Jenna.

Marisha Wallace and Laura Baldwin are fantastic as Becky and Dawn respectively, Jenna’s work colleagues.

Each get to shine in their own numbers, with Wallace nailing Becky’s no nonsense attitude in “I Didn’t Plan It”, and Baldwin charming as the nerdy, shy, Civil War obsessed Dawn in “When He Sees Me”. Jack McBrayer is an absolute riot as Ogie, Dawns prospective, goofy suitor. His performance energises the stage and the audience alike with his lanky, outrageous courtship that is full of magic tricks and hyperactivity.

All in all the show has a big heart.

Director Diane Paulus’s production is classy and slick and moves through the changes in tone as smoothly as the changes in scene and set. The overarching balance of sentimentality and silliness leaves a wonderfully fulfilled and warm feeling that is as hard to resist as some of the pies baked throughout would be.

All About Eve is all about Gillian

BELGIAN DIRECTOR of the moment, Ivo van Hove, brings his wizardry to the stage once again with this production of a cinematic classic, All About Eve. Van Hove’s adaptation is high concept and contemporary, that as a result of some very delicate alterations, retains the wit and charm of the 1950’s original movie script, writes Rosie O’Connell.

It is no secret that Gillian Anderson generates a bit of a fan frenzy due to a stellar career that reaches back to The X Files and up to new Netflix comedy Sex Education, and my goodness she did not disappoint. Her casting as Margo Channing is inspired, as she brings distinction and grandeur to

the seasoned, steely character with ease. She slinks about the stage in silks and satins with such a defiant, enticing grace that, despite not quite being a match for Bette Davis’ quick wit and smart mouth, she brings a fragile vulnerability and consternation to Margo that is just electric to watch.

Lily James exudes all of the faux naivety and duplicity necessary for Eve Harrington’s deception of Margo Channing. James starts out as a wide eyed fledgling, full of sweetness and enthusiasm, desperately following her idol’s every word and move, a role audiences will be used to seeing her portray from parts in the second Mamma Mia film and Cinderella.

She is, however, equally as convincing when the artfully

manipulative and ambitious side of her character is revealed toward the second half of the performance.

While the film was a love letter to the theatrics of the stage, van Hove’s stage production presents as a love letter to the cinematography of film. Perhaps in an homage to the original film, it seems fitting that throughout the play cameras are used to project revealing close ups, scrutinising the characters and so, blurring the lines of what is public and what is private. Jan Versweyveld’s box set lifts to reveal a secondary, backstage set that, through the use of cameras, allows the audience unfettered access to locked bathrooms and kitchen conversations, that when projected onto widescreens allows for two simultaneous scenes.

With poised performances from Monica Dolan as Margo’s confidant, providing a wry narrative throughout and Stanley Townsend’s turn as slick theatre critic Addison DeWitt, the production as a whole comes together to create a beguiling interpretation. However, in spite of all the set and camera trickery and impressive performances from all involved, it cannot detract from the fact that it is really all about Gillian.

They pushed their faces through the holes of the cardboard cutouts of the show’s three stars in order to have a photo taken of them pretending to be their heroes. This was not the usual theatregoing crowd, this was the audience for Only Fools and Horses and they were on a Jolly Boys’ Outing.

The set revolved to become in turn The Nag’s Head, the Trotters’ tower block flat or the market where Del Boy and Rodney sold their dodgy wares. The first hurdle was getting over the fact that these look-a-like, sound-a-like players were not the originals, but once that barrier was surmounted this was just like watching an episode of the nation’s fa-vourite sitcom.

They were all there, Trigger and his broom, Boycie and his nasal laugh, Mickey Pearce and Denzil, Mike behind the bar, Raquel and

Cassandra, Marlene and, of course, the Holy Trinity of Del Boy, Rodney and Granddad.

There’s not much of a plot here, in fact it felt more like Part 1 of a ‘to be continued’ sto-ry - And with so many loose ends I wasn’t even sure it had ended. But this does not take away from the joy of seeing these characters up there on the stage, it just makes us love them more. We nudged partners when a legendary old scene was hinted at; we nodded knowingly at the mention of Batman and Robin; our expectations were teased with the bar flap going up and down and the chandelier shaking.

These were in jokes for this in crowd and if you had no knowledge of the history of Only Fools and Horses then you may have wondered what this was all about.

Rotherhithe’s cops and robbers

rime in Rotherhithe was rife back in PC Horace Smith’s day. Around 1900, the ships, sailors and organised gangs of thieves kept ‘plod’ awfully busy, writes Debra Gosling...

Today, residents have problems with vandals and idiots causing havoc on mopeds, but in the eighteenth century it was far worse. Highwaymen were attracted to the area as it was en-route to Blackheath, where the rich and dandies of the day would be relieved of their jewels as their coaches trundled across the common. The robbers would return to Rotherhithe with their booty to sell on to visiting sailors in the pub and coffee-houses.

Pillaging pirates were another problem for the good people of Redriff to contend with. It was not hard to identify them as most had scars and bits missing after fights aboard captive ships. Just like Long John Silver, some had wooden legs while some sported eye patches. The more light-fingered shipmates could be identified by their split noses. A favourite pirate punishment was to slit down the nose of any thief on board with a cutlass.

In 1765 local man Mr Fosbrook came face to face with some of these river pirates when they robbed his corn lighter of nine sacks of oats.

They cut his boat from its moorings and set it adrift in the Thames. In

1721 a pirate was brought before the Justice of Rotherhithe when one of his previous victims, a ship’s captain, spotted him as he passed a pub. The unlucky captain recognised the man as the pirate who had stolen three of his ships on different occasions. He remembered the incidents well, as on the third time the pirate had threatened to nail the captain’s ears to the mast. During the course of the trial it was revealed that the thief had taken eight other ships. It is unknown what sentence this Jolly Roger was given, but it is likely he would have been hanged at Cuckold’s Point, which was roughly where Columbia Wharf is today.

The threat of the gallows didn’t put

off the smugglers who were drawn to the convenient waterside inns along the peninsula. The Angel pub was built on piles in the river and must have been an attraction to any smugglers on furtive night-time boating trips. They could easily take advantage of the trap doors in the floor to stash their booty.

Rotherhithe also had a whole rabble of robbers, muggers and burglars. In fact, the problem got so bad that the locals set up a vigilante committee. In 1771 six robbers armed with knives and cutlasses jumped out on a married couple who were walking by Fountain Stairs. Four of them held the man up, clenching a large knife to his throat and pushing the barrel of a pistol into

his chest. They patted down his pockets for silver and nabbed the glittering buckles from his shoes.

Meanwhile, the other two gang members had bundled the victim’s wife down an alley and tried to assault her, giving up when she fainted. The parish constable was on scene and tried to help, but was told by the ruffians that they would blow his brains out if he intervened.

Further downriver, house owners had their own problems: brass doorknockers would vanish overnight and when it rained it was discovered that the lead had gone from the roof.

People were not even safe in their own back gardens, as muggers would skulk in the bushes and wait to

unburden them of their pocket watches and jewellery.

The vigilante committee became a proper neighbourhood watch when residents met at the Ship pub and made plans to capture local villains.

Rewards were put up and intelligence plans laid to watch any stranger arriving in the community.

Unfortunately the committee were not around in 1812, when the Three Compasses was broken into and all of the silver and cash from the till was stolen.

f you’ve been to Moxon’s the East Dulwich fishmongers of some repute, then your next stop is Next Door, the fish restaurant next door where their knowledge of fish and seafood is combined to bring the freshest produce from the sea to your table, writes Michael Holland.

I was having dinner with my mum, who I know likes a good bit of fish, and who I knew would love Next Door.

The restaurant is bijou, packed with tiny tables that are largely incapable of containing too many of the small plate offerings most people desire, and the spaces between these tables are for the size zero to slim. Luckily our server fitted nicely as she flitted about fetching water and talking us through the day’s specials.

She recommended 5 small plates as a good average between two, so we set

about choosing that number from an excellent menu. From the wine list I chose a Tokaji, a really nice, dry Hungarian delight that went well with all the fish dishes, but could not cope with the sweetness of the desserts towards the end, which is no fault of the wine. Plus, the sommelier gave me a timely reminder of my mispronunciation by praising me for my excellent choice of Tokaji, while not pronouncing the silent J. Nicely done, Sir. The first of our selection to arrive was Pickled Herring, and old favourite of Mum’s and not half as vinegary as what we used to buy in the Jewish delis of old.

This classic was updated with additions of smoked roe, celeriac and a dill and mustard sauce that transported the fish from 1970s Whitechapel to 21st century East Dulwich.

Next was Grilled Mackerel with Sweet Potato Gnocchi, a good twist on the Italian staple that came with capers, sage, spinach and oyster sauce, and which was quickly followed by Grilled Rye King Scallops with Chilli in Seaweed Butter.

The scallops were absolutely divine, so I was tempted to lift the shell to my lips to lap up the juices, but the lovely bread we had was ideal for mopping up, and saved me from a clip round the ear for bad table manners…

by now as we indulged ourselves in all this fantastic fish. There was the occasional slurp and lip-smacking, and a ‘Hmmm,’ between mouthfuls, and a ‘Awww, ain’t those scallops good?’ But in the main we worked our way quietly through an ocean of epicurean heaven.

Mum had seen a TV chef cooking monkfish in the week so we had Next Door’s version which was better than anything ITV ever cooked up, and then my Green Salad finally arrived! I wasn’t sure if this had been forgotten or they were merely waiting for some space to appear on our table. Even so, it was something I’d wanted to enjoy as a side with all the dishes and not alone near the end.

Finally our Cornish Crab Risotto, Sorrel, Tomato and Parmesan came.

You could really taste the sea in this bowl of rich rice, and as nice as it was we could not finish something so opulent at the end of the meal, although if it had been served earlier I’m sure it would’ve been devoured with vigour.

To finish, Mum had the Lemon Tart and I the Rhubarb Possett, and they seemed to be the perfect end to a great meal.

The beauty of Next Door is that the fish is simply cooked but the ingredients and work that goes in to what accompanies that fish makes it a very

special place. Next Door is a must for all fish fanciers; definitely one for Rotherhithe foodies Lee and Torsten to try if they’ve not been before…

CHRIS PHILLIPS was pleased with Millwall Lionesses’ performance despite their 2-0 Women’s Championship defeat to Lewes last weekend.

After Millwall went close when Beth Lumsden’s corner was palmed onto the post, Jess King put the hosts in front from a counter-attack.

The Lionesses had their chances to level, but instead the hosts got a second through Charlotte Owen’s long-range

effort past goalkeeper Rhiannon Stewart ten minutes from time.

“I thought the girls played well,” Phillips said. “I’m disappointed with the result, but with the second half I’m not too disappointed with our performance.

We created a lot of chances, but unfortunately they didn’t go in and on another day we would score two or three goals.

“It was about recovery [after defeat to Charlton, looking at tapes, look at concepts we wanted to work on. In the large, most of them worked, the only thing that didn’t work for us was getting

the ball in the back of the net.

“The first [Lewes goal] was a mistake between the defence and the goalkeeper, but I don’t want to dwell on that as I don’t think any other team puts a sixteen-yearold in goal with that sort of atmosphere around them and I want to focus on the four or five great saves she did make.

“You don’t lose, you win or you learn and Rhiannon will learn from that today and she’s got a long career ahead of her.

“The second one was just a long shot and it just managed to go in the top corner, it was against the run of play and was unfortunate.

“I thought today Riva [Casley] was great again, I thought when she came on against Charlton in the week she had a great performance and she was good again.

I thought Fran Ali did very well for us and was one of the more experienced players in the team and generally all round I don’t see anyone having a bad game, so it was just frustrating.”

The Lionesses’ next competitive fixture is against Aston Villa in Dartford on March 31.

Osoze, who turned to boxing at 15 to keep out of trouble, and was ordained as a church minister in March 2018, has a perfect 6-0 record in the ring. His future looks very bright and Ultimate Boxxer will give him the perfect chance to showcase his skill and punching power to a massive live audience and catapult his standing in the division towards more big fights and dream title opportunities.

Osoze said: “My faith in God led to me boxing and it drives me on in the ring.

“Ultimate Boxxer is a massive opportunity for me and I’m going to grasp it with both hands. I aim to take things step by step but, ultimately, I have big ambitions.

“I aim to become a multiple world champion and then retire a legend to the sport of boxing. I want to show the world that with God anything is possible.”

The shows format is eight fighters from around the UK battling it out in the high-paced elimination tournament in four quarter-finals of three x three minute rounds, followed by two semi-finals and one final to determine the winner who will get the large share of the prize money, a promotional deal and be catapulted up the rankings.

An opportunity to represent their country in international finals is also on the line.

PECKHAM RYE were back in cup action last weekend in the semi-final of the Leader Trophy with a full squad to choose from after the return from long-term injury of midfielder Lee Turner.

ROB BROWN hit a double as Fisher bounced back from cup disappointment to return to second place in the SCEFL Premier Division table with a 4-2 win at Bearsted last weekend.

After conceding in the last minute and then losing after extra-time to Corinthian in the Challenge Cup semi-final last week, Fisher boss Dean Harrison said it would be tough for his side to recover but promised they wouldn’t play the “victim”.

And his players conclusively answered any doubts that they would be suffering a cup hangover as they kept the pressure on leaders Corinthian as the sides chase the only promotion place.

The Fish suffered an early blow when the hosts took the lead through Pete Williams in the sixth minute.

Brown got his first ten minutes later before Trey Small gave his side a 2-1 lead 28 minutes in.

five minutes before the break but it didn’t take long for Fisher to regain the lead when Brown got his second on 52 minutes.

Bearsted pressed to rescue the game, but Fisher made the points safe when Richie Hamill slammed home from the spot two minutes from time.

Fisher are four points off Corinthian ahead of their trip to Tunbridge Wells this Saturday.

An Eagles opener was cancelled out by the Rye’s John Woolley who cut inside to beat three men before firing home.

It looked all over for the visitors when the hosts made it 2-1 and then Danny Gibson was sent off for the visitors.

But with just five minutes left, Duke Binitie struck from distance to send it into extra-time.

Binitie was at it again when he gave the Rye to lead for the first time in the contest, but the Eagles snatched a late leveller meaning spot-kicks were needed to decide the tie.

And the Rye held their nerve to win the shootout and book a final date on April 28 at VCD Athletic Ground, Crayford.

And having given so much on Sunday, neither did Dave Martin. The goalkeeper had been close to immaculate until the 95th minute, seconds from the full-time whistle, when he let Solly March’s freekick through his grasp.

Football is the most brutal judge, and it probably won’t be remembered that Martin showed such character to be so solid in extra-time, after such a harrowing personal ordeal.

His error sent some of his team-mates sinking to the turf, but after it was all over Steve Morison went straight to the goalkeeper to pick him up.

Martin will replay his error over and over in his mind. We’ve all been there, we’ve all made mistakes that haunt us: If only, if only, if only.

Martin posted an apology on Twitter later on Sunday and it was heart-warming looking through the replies to see the overwhelming support he received, not just from Millwall fans but from West Ham and Crystal Palace fans, too.

Neil Harris, who had gone to his goalkeeper at the end of normal time with consoling and encouraging words, backed his keeper.

“He’s a top pro, one of the nicest guys I’ve ever come across in football, as a player, coach or manager,” Harris said.

“He’s devastated. He’s made a mistake, he’s put his hands up and said he’s let the boys down. He hasn’t let the boys down, he’s made an error of judgement.

“He is a great character, very popular in the changing room, but he has made a slight error.”

And, Millwall supporters being the pragmatic bunch they are, will now be reflecting that perhaps a semi-final against

Manchester City is best swerved. Apart from the fact that there would have been a real danger of a hiding at Wembley in front of the TV cameras, the game against West Brom would have had to be moved to midweek.

Millwall’s small squad was already hit by injuries, but now Shane Ferguson will serve a three-match league ban for his straight dismissal for a stamp on Lewis Dunk in the last minute of extra-time. A further fixture would have had the potential to stretch resources even further.

There was so much to admire in Millwall’s performance, even if some of it might not have survived a VAR review.

That wasn’t in place at The Den, and had it been Alex Pearce’s opener probably would have been chalked off. Millwall’s let’s say rule-pushing - execution of that goal would have been a delight for the home fans. As Shaun Williams stood over a corner, Glenn Murray was marking Pearce and Dunk was on Jake Cooper, before Cooper ran a line to take out Murray, Pearce, now free, made a beeline for the back post and planted a header beyond goalkeeper Mat Ryan and four Brighton defenders on the line. Whoever came up with the move deserved credit, even if the Seagulls felt referee Christopher Kavanagh was due none.

After what had been a fairly uneventful first half, Millwall had torn into the Premier League side after the break and were the much better side.

Jed Wallace and Lee Gregory had oneon-ones, albeit from difficult angles that Ryan – who had escaped when he kicked a clearance off Shane Duffy's backside earlier before just getting back in time with Gregory set to pounce – saved as the Lions relentlessly attacked the visitors. It was as if Millwall had been struck at halftime by the exhilarating realisation that they were 45 minutes from another historic chapter, and they reacted with football full of verve and vibrancy.

Wallace was magnificent, and eleven

minutes from time when he picked up the ball facing his own goal but immediately turned to attack it showed Millwall’s exuberant intent. Wallace got lucky with a ricochet when he tried to flick the ball past Bernardo, but from then on it was about patience and composure. Wallace waited, Aiden O’Brien made his move off the left, and then tapped in the low cross.

The Den, as loud and hostile maybe as it has ever been, every tackle and awarding of a corner to their side greeted with a visceral roar, now erupted.

How to explain what followed. In one way it’s easy. Brighton had more quality on their bench. March had come on before Millwall’s first, and Jose Izquierdo and Jurgen Locadia before the second.

Millwall appeared to have seen off the storm, the sun now shining after a downpour of rain and sleet earlier in the second half that had lent to the feel of another upset.

Harris said later he was more upset with the defending for Brighton’s first goal than with Martin’s mistake, and you could see why. March ran past Ferguson and substitute James Meredith and then the first bit of bad luck struck for Millwall, the winger’s cross bouncing off Ryan Leonard’s heel to Locadia, who turned Ryan Tunnicliffe and smashed home. A Premier League-quality finish.

Millwall will analyse Brighton’s equaliser and judge it was so avoidable even before Martin’s mistake. Ferguson gave away a foul, March over-hit his delivery and Martin hesitated. It looked like in that moment he was undecided whether to leave it, catch it or palm it away. Instead there was no decisive movement and the ball hit his arm and went in.

A consequence of Ferguson’s red card was that Millwall were down another setpiece specialist, after Gregory and Wallace had been withdrawn late on in normal time.

Mahlon Romeo was the only defender

among Millwall’s first five takers, and he missed, Ryan diving to his left to save.

Murray had smacked Brighton’s first penalty off the crossbar, before Williams, Tunnicliffe and Leonard scored for Millwall. Romeo’s miss meant Morison had to score, and he did.

Millwall had decided on their first five takers, now it was who felt confident to go next. Dunk slotted in from twelve yards and then Cooper stepped up. You didn’t feel confident as he bounded up, so far out of his comfort zone, and he fired over.

Almost immediately The Den rose to salute their team, the supporters a credit to their club. Morison initially turned away in disappointment before changing direction and heading for Martin.

Millwall fans followed suit on Twitter to console their goalkeeper. Their side were out of the cup, but their team had done them proud.

Boss wants every player ready to contribute

NEIL HARRIS has called on the players currently out of the firstteam reckoning to grasp their opportunities and help Millwall avoid relegation.

Lions vice-captain Shaun Hutchinson has recently lost his place in the side, while David Martin has taken over from Jordan Archer in goal.

James Meredith, who started all 46 league games last season, has seen Murray Wallace and then Shane Ferguson jump ahead of him in the pecking order.

Some Lions players haven’t lived up to their billing, with Jiri Skalak starting just four league games following his move from Brighton last summer.

There were high hopes that Fred Onyedinma’s loan spell at Wycombe would bring on his development in the same way Ben Thompson’s stint at Portsmouth has, but the former has played only eight minutes for Millwall in 2019.

Alex Pearce had to wait for his chance but then took it emphatically and captained the side in the 2-0 win at Birmingham before scoring his first Millwall goal against Brighton last Sunday.

Ferguson’s red card in that game, which Millwall didn’t appeal, means he is suspended for three fixtures, which is set to give Meredith his chance.

Right-back Conor McLaughlin hasn’t featured since November, but returned to the bench against the Seagulls.

Millwall have one of the smallest squads in the division, and it is already stretched with Wallace and Tom Bradshaw injured, and others such as Skalak and Onyedinma out of form.

But Harris believes every player will have a part to play as Millwall aim to make sure they extend their Championship stay into at least a third straight season.

“The eleven players on the pitch against Brighton performed exceptionally well, but we’ve also seen the importance of having players to come off the bench and influence things on the pitch,” Harris said.

“You’ve seen the importance of Steve Morison coming on in games this season. We’ve had players come into the side to perform outstandingly well.

“Ben Thompson and Ben Marshall will be back and there are others who haven’t been in the team who have got to make sure they’re ready.

Harris hinted at summer defensive changes to rectify that weakness.

He said: “It’s not something you can address over short a period of time, we’ll look at it in the summer.

“For now the focus is on making sure

that everyone understands how important the coming weeks are, and that they have to be at the best of their ability to get the results that we need.”

A potential summer defensive signing is Pearce, but Harris isn’t speculating on a move for the Derby player.

Harris said: “He’s done really well coming here on a deal until the end of

“Before that at Birmingham we had the balance right between defence and attack, we showed our work rate and discipline, that’s the standard and we need that between now and the end of the season.”

Meanwhile, an injury to

THE SILVER lining after Millwall’s heart-breaking FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Brighton is that their fixture against West Brom stays on April 6 rather than being brought forward to midweek.

Millwall boss Neil Harris said an FA Cup semi-final would have been “wonderful” for the club, but accepts the “bigger picture” is that staying in the Championship is the ultimate goal this season.

Millwall face Leeds after the international break, then have another full week to prepare for the

Baggies.

“There is that side of it, of course, but we’d love to have had a semifinal at Wembley carrying the momentum with us from Brighton,” Harris said. “It would have been wonderful for the players and the fans.

“It would have added to the fixture list but we would have found a way.

“But we have to look at the bigger picture. Now the big focus for us is on the league campaign, as it always has been this season. We’ve got nine huge games left and the focus is on accumulating as many points from those games as possible.”

Southampton forward Shane Long meant Mick McCarthy looked to his old club to call up Aiden O’Brien for European Championship qualifiers against Gibraltar and Georgia.

O’Brien had been in a provisional squad but missed out when it was cut down.

Harris said: “It was only going to be Shane Ferguson and Conor McLaughlin away [with Northern Ireland] but Ireland needed Aiden, and it’s great for him.

“We’re always pleased for our players representing their countries, but we keep our fingers crossed that they come back to us fit and healthy.”

RYAN LEONARD has assured Millwall fans the side will fight to the end to ensure they beat the drop - and he is confident they can pull it off.

The Lions went to Birmingham last week on the back of four straight league defeats, but Ben Thompson’s brace gave them the three points.

After the FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Brighton on Sunday, Millwall now just have to focus on avoiding relegation, with nine games left this season.

The win over Birmingham has kept them out of the bottom three.

“I’d say there was probably a little bit of pressure, we knew how big a game it was,” he said. “We’d seen the results the night before and we knew that a few teams have dropped points but they’re not going to continue to drop points. We have to get results ourselves, so we had some pressure going into it.

“When you look back I think we dealt with the pressure really well, we handled it, especially the first half. We defended solidly and hit them on the counter-attack with Thommo scoring two great goals.

“After the game we showed how important it was, how strong the team spirit and togetherness is, how crucial the result was.

“It’s a Millwall thing, we struggled against a team in Bolton that were down near the bottom of the league then we go to Birmingham and win 2-0 against a team going for the play-offs. A lot of people wouldn’t have seen it coming.

“For us as players we’ve never lost hope or belief that we can produce results like that.”

Leonard hailed the impact of Thompson since his return from his loan spell at Portsmouth.

“I’d never met him until he came back but he’s a great lad and very well liked around the changing room,” Leonard continued. “The fans love him as well which is great for him.

“It’s a strange old game, you can go out on loan for six months and come back and he’s got three goals in five games now.

Birmingham was a great occasion when he’s got his two goals. The scenes after the game getting his name sung by the fans was everything he deserved, he’s been brilliant since he’s come back.

“He’s been a breath of fresh air for everyone and if he continues with that form it’s only going to help us as a team.

“It’s nice for the fans to have someone like him there. As players we just go on the pitch and try to perform as best we can for the club. For the fans it’s good that they’ve got ‘one of their own’, as they say, in the team.

“All of us will give everything for the football club but they probably rely on him a little bit more to be the main man for them.

“It’s great for them and for Thommo that they’ve got that connection.”

Leonard was handed a new role for Millwall against Blues, anchoring midfield and staying close to his defence to help his side to a clean sheet, and allowing Thompson and Ryan Tunnicliffe to get forward in support of lone striker Lee Gregory.

Leonard said: “I really enjoyed it. To be fair I’ve played there quite a few games, at Southend probably over 100 games. It was a role that the day before the gaffer said he wanted me to play and I said, ‘no problem’.

“I’ll play anywhere, I’ve played rightback here, off the striker. It was a position I really enjoyed, and the two centre-backs helped me massively with communication, as did the goalkeeper.

“It’s a position I’ll enjoy if I’m needed there again.

“The three of us in there worked really well together. We’ve all got different attributes and we can all cover the ground a lot, we’re quite athletic players.

“The two in front of me pushed on a bit higher supporting Greggs, picking second balls up and supporting us from there.

“I know Thommo got both of the goals but Tunni did really well also and they both deserve a lot of credit.”

Leonard is a former team-mate of Lions coach Adam Barrett when the two were at Southend.

The midfielder praised the former

defender’s impact at the club.

“Ads is a real leader and I think all the staff are, to be fair, Livers [Dave Livermore], the gaffer, Ads, they were all leaders as players,” Leonard continued. “It shows whether it’s the gaffer trying to get us going in the changing room or Livers or Ads. “They all understand how to lead and get people up for games. I’m quite good friends with Ads as well and he can put his arm around me and show me what I need to be doing.

“That’s helped me.

“Everyone goes through a spell in a season when maybe they have two or three bad games and I hit that a couple of weeks ago. I’d like to think I came out the other end of it.

“We’re all human, not everyone is going to play well every single week but it’s about how you respond to it, keep working hard.

“The gaffer brought me back in against Birmingham, I like to think I did well. The main thing was getting three points to try to shoot us away from that drop zone.”

After the game at St Andrew’s the players, management and staff came together to form a huddle to show their unity.

Leonard added: “I think it was the gaffer and Moro [Steve Morison] that were responsible for it, and Moro did a lot of the speaking. He was passionately saying that we know we haven’t been performing well enough but that’s the standard we can set.

He said we’ve done way too much, getting promotion out of League One, to allow it to just slip by in one season. We had a great season last year but the fans deserve another one.

“We’ll be fighting for the games we’ve got left, the fans don’t need to worry about that, we’ll be fighting for every last inch.”

MILLWALL’S TRANSFER planning for next season is well under way – with Lions boss Neil Harris set to swoop for a nonleague star.

Harry Ransom has trained with Millwall and is set to sign from National League South’s Eastbourne Borough, who currently have exLions boss Mark McGhee in caretaker charge.

Ransom, who is nineteen years old, is usually a defender but can also play in midfield or attack and is the youngest player ever to captain

Eastbourne.

After starting his career with Brighton, he made his senior Eastbourne debut two years ago before signing professional terms and becoming a first-team regular.

Harris said: “He has been in with us and is a player we have admired for a while, he’s a young centre-back with promise.

“He’s done really well and we’ll continue to monitor him and see where it goes.”

Meanwhile, Harris isn’t discussing the future of goalkeeper David Martin, 33, who is out of contract this summer.

He kept a clean sheet at St Andrew’s but his error gifted Brighton their equaliser in last Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final that Millwall lost 5-4 on penalties.

“I go back to my quotes after the game and I stand by them one million per cent,” Harris said. “He’s made an error of judgement but it’s no different in any walk of life. Everyone makes mistakes, it’s human nature.

“He was outstanding in everything he did up to that.

“And the big thing for me was how he responded after making the mistake. To stand up and be counted in extra-time and play so well again was outstanding, to show that mental

strength.

“It was very impressive and he’ll have the full support of everyone here.

“There is nothing at the moment in terms of contracts, the focus is on the final nine games of the season.

“Contract situations will become clearer at the end of the season.”

Martin spoke to the News recently about his future. He said: “It will have to be the best situation for me and my family. You can only sometimes react to the card you have been dealt and hopefully you make the right decision.

“Any decision that has ever been made in football is a gamble because there’s never a foregone conclusion in anything you do.”

Pearce keeps shtum on future

ALEX PEARCE has said Millwall is a “fantastic club” – but he is shelving thoughts on his future until after the end of the season.

Pearce, 30, joined the Lions on loan from Derby County in January and recently earned a regular first-team place.

The Republic of Ireland centre-back is out of contract at the Rams at the end of the season but has yet to decide his future.

It seems likely he will be surplus to requirements for Frank Lampard, after making just one appearance for Derby this campaign before moving to south London.

Pearce made his Lions debut in the FA Cup third round against Hull in January but didn’t make his league debut until the 2-1 defeat to Bolton on March 9.

Pearce was given the captain’s armband as the Lions defeated Birmingham City 2-0 in their last league game.

“Sometimes in football you have to be patient, but if you ask any footballer they all want to play. I’m no different,” Pearce said.

“But whoever’s picked you get behind them and hope for the best result.

“I’m just thinking about the final games of the season, to be honest. I don’t want to be thinking too far ahead.

“Millwall is a fantastic club and we’ll be doing all we can to keep this club in the league.”
