A BUNGLING burglar got more than they bargained for when they attempted a break-in at a storage unit in Potters Fields Park – as they were greeted with two hive-loads of disturbed bees.

The unknown criminal is thought to have staged a failed night-time heist, jumping over an eight-foot high fence which surrounds the storage unit at the park’s apiary to have an “opportunistic look.” Instead they landed directly on a hive of angry bees...

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

CELEBRATING 80TH BIRTHDAY

AND NURSERY PLANS MARCH TO SECURE ANOTHER 80

A BERMONDSEY nursery which was one of a handful of nursery schools built before the war has just celebrated its eightieth anniversary.

Kintore Way Nursery School, in Bermondsey, took its first pupils in January 1939, and many of them were evacuated to Surrey and Kent under the threat of German doodlebugs.

On Friday, the nursery school held a birthday party to commemorate the anniversary, with staff and children dressing in WW2-era costumes and birthday hats. Children also played oldschool games such as tiddly-winks and tug-of-war.

Rebecca Sherwood, executive headteacher at Kintore Way, said: “We had party food and lots of different party games. The school opened in January 1939 but it was officially opened in

As part of the anniversary, nursery staff have been combing through the archives at the John Harvard library in Borough, unearthing photographs, and letters from its early pre-war days.

Pictures of the nursery’s first cohorts, visits from overseas royals and the official unveiling in March 1939 have all been uncovered in the archives.

The nursery even hopes that its rich past could be compiled into a book with the

help of local historians.

“We’d like to find a way of getting that in a book because there’s such a rich history of the borough that we would love to get out there,” said Ms Sherwood, who has been at Kintore Way since 2007.

However, the headteacher also sounded a note of warning about funding cuts to the nursery.

If £24million of Government ‘supplementary’ funding for state maintained nursery schools were to

come to an end after 2020-21, nurseries across the borough would struggle to stay open, she said.

Kintore Way will be among the borough’s nurseries which will be represented at a march in Parliament Square on March 11 over the issue.

“We’re still keeping the pressure up because we want to know what will happen after that year,” she said. “We want to be around for another eighty years.”

A LOLLIPOP lady in Dulwich has celebrated her 40th year helping children in Dulwich safely cross the road.

Since 1979, seventy-year-old Alice Hayes has helped thousands of pupils cross Dulwich Village junction on their way to school.

On Tuesday, February 26, she was joined by children, parents, school staff and councillor Margy Newens, who thanked her for her dedication and hard work since taking up her post.

Ros Walton, from Dulwich and Herne Hill safe routes to school group said: “Accustomed to rising at 5am, Alice never struggles to be at her post

by 8am and always has a smile for everyone, whether it’s a glorious sunny day, pouring with rain or freezing temperatures.”

All 360 children at Dulwich Hamlet Junior School - which Alice’s own children attended - wrote their own individual messages of thanks, with pupils from other schools including Alleyns, James Allen prep, and Dulwich Village Infants School, also turning out to show their support.

And, so Alice could enjoy her celebrations and take some deserved time off, local police officer PC Daniel McLynn helped out by taking over her afternoon shift.

“The whole Dulwich community looks forward to celebrating Alice's 50th anniversary in ten years’ time,” Ms Walton added.

AN APPEAL by Katrina Makunova’s family for her killer’s ‘unduly lenient’ sentence to be increased has been rejected by the government’s most senior solicitor.

Oluwaseyi Dada, aged 21, was sentenced to two years and three months in prison in January after he pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his seventeen-yearold ex-girlfriend.

The court heard Katrina, from Lewisham, had died on July 12, 2018, after falling on a knife she had been carrying in her handbag during an argument in a block of flats on Camberwell’s Brisbane Street, where Dada lived.

Police say the pair’s relationship had deteriorated into a series of ‘veiled threats’ and recriminations via social media in the weeks before she died.

Katrina’s family criticised the sentence as ‘unbelievable’ and said Katrina had complained ‘many

times to the police that she was in fear of her life’. A petition calling for an appeal has nearly 300 signatures.

Their campaign was backed by Camberwell and Peckham MP and former lawyer Harriet Harman, who served as general solicitor from June 2001 to May 2005.

Harman told the News: “Everything is wrong in the reports about this case,” describing it as a ‘domestic homicide’.

But the appeal was rejected by Robert Buckland QC, the government’s most senior lawyer.

In a letter dated February 27, the solicitor general explained: “Having carefully reviewed the papers I am satisfied that the judge approached the sentencing in the correct way, and in the line with the basis of plea and on the extraordinary facts of this case.

“It would therefore not be right for me to refer the sentence to the Court of Appeal.”

WOMEN AND girls trapped in abusive relationships with gang members are being failed by police and other services, says a former Southwark councillor and author of a new report on how gang violence impacts women.

Samantha Jury-Dada (pictured), who was elected as a Labour Faraday ward councillor in Walworth from 2016-2018, published her report girls, gangs and their abusive relationships last week. Jury-Dada, who now lives in Manchester, argues women are falling through the cracks in the police and other public services’ approach to tackling gang violence.

Her report highlights that existing interventions are focused overwhelmingly on men, and not the abusive, controlling relationships they can have with the women in their lives.

Jury-Dada believes the number of women caught up in gang culture and abuse is vastly unreported, and argues simply acknowledging these victims exist will make a positive first step and help police forces, councils and charities across the UK tackle the problem.

The Metropolitan police’s gang matrix, a database listing men and boys believed to be gang members or at risk of gangs, is overwhelmingly populated by men and boys - at 99.4 per cent.

But research shows that nearly nine in ten county lines gangs use

prosecution of domestic homicides.

A spokesperson from the Attorney General’s Office further explained: “A referral under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme to the Court of Appeal can only be made if a sentence is not just lenient but unduly so, such that the sentencing judge made a gross error or imposed a sentence outside the range of sentences reasonably available in the circumstances of the offence.

“The threshold is a high one, and the test was not met in this case.”

The family have also criticised the police’s handling of the investigation; saying Katrina had made numerous complaints to officers about alleged abuse and humiliation by her older partner, a previously convicted ‘county lines drug dealer’, which were not followed up.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct confirmed in January of this year it was investigating the conduct of five officers involved in the alleged reports of domestic abuse made by Katrina between February and June last year.

Report by former Southwark councillor says a key barrier is the idea that women abused by gangs don’t fit the mould of the idealised ‘victim’

women and girls in their operations, often as drug mules or for sex trafficking.

“As a councillor I sat in a lot of meetings on youth violence and realised there was a bit of a gap,” Jury-Dada told the News, “abusive relationships come first, before the gang, so we need to divert people away from them.”

Her work, funded by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, involved five weeks vising projects in areas in the USA affected by gang violence to find examples of best practice.

She says a key barrier is the idea that women abused by gangs don’t fit the mould of the idealised ‘victim’.

“Girls in the criminal justice system are not the culturally accepted view of what it means to be a victim,” the report explains.

“These girls occupy a grey space between victim and perpetrator, where they may legitimately be responsible for a crime such as drug dealing or physical violence but are also being victimised within the gang through an abusive relationship or sexual violence.”

She argues traditional ‘victim support’ style interventions are less likely to achieve success with this group, partly because they do not necessarily see themselves as victims and may view their unhealthy relationships as normal.

The report recommends advertising services as offering opportunities in employment, housing, and conflict resolution instead, and says there is evidence that self-esteem building activities are more likely to be successful.

She also calls for more female frontline workers, and saying gang outreach teams should have training in supporting people experiencing domestic abuse and trauma.

The deputy mayor for policing and crime, Sophie Linden, says the report will help the Met develop the work of its new violence reduction unit.

It is hoped it will also inform commissioners’ decisions in other parts of the country affected by gang violence.

DRIVERS WHO are not overstaying at Surrey Quays carpark are being charged as if they are, a motorist has claimed, after successfully getting their ticket reversed.

Christopher Fisher, a resident on nearby Quebec Way, was hit with a £50 parking ticket after automatic number-plate recognition cameras recorded him staying in the carpark for nearly five hours.

However, Mr Fisher said the cameras wrongly logged two separate short visits to the petrol station and a cash machine as one long stay on January 4, therefore wrongly fining him.

CP Pus, the company responsible for the car-park told the News that it had logged over 400,000 visits to the carpark in three months and had very few ticket challenges.

“What they was trying to say was I had been in the carpark and had not come back out until four hours and forty-five minutes later,” Mr Fisher said.

The motorist managed to get out of the as location data stored from the day on his phone which showed he had not stayed in the carpark for over five hours.

“I looked on my phone, it was on my location history. I’d been Tesco in the morning and then later I went to the Santander to get some cash out,” he said.

“By the time you get that [the fine] through your letter box, if you can’t remember how are you supposed to remember what you did?” he asked.

“Someone might think, ‘oh I did stay there that long.’”

He added that he had previously been fined at the carpark and had been happy to pay because it was an error on his part.

A spokesperson for the company responded that the cameras were “specifically” set up to monitor the traffic flows in-and-out of the carpark.

“Since we took over management of the car park three months ago, we have had over 400,000 visits and have had very few

challenges to any PCNs issued,” said the spokesman.

“However, we are constantly striving to improve the service we provide and the experience for motorists, therefore we welcome all feedback.”

CP Plus has cancelled the penalty notice as a goodwill gesture, the company said.

The British Parking Association, which maintains a code of practice for the

industry, told the News it supported the use of automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to manage parking but that complaints over double visits were common.

The cameras “can be extremely efficient, effective and precise” said a representative of the group, which “brings with it a responsibility to use it carefully.”

“The main criticism is multiple visits,

which are sometimes not identified and which can lead to false enforcement for overstaying, non-payment or incorrect payment,” the spokesperson said.

While adding that it could not comment on individual cases, the organisation said it investigates cases where there has been a breach of its code-of-practice.

Fundraiser for Rotherhithe man who helped establish arts scene

RUGBY PLAYERS HELP POLICE TACKLE YOUTH ISSUES

A NEW partnership between police and Old Alleynians Rugby Club has helped get kids from Southwark into the sport and learn more about the Met.

Project Rugby was set up to give young people across Southwark and Lambeth the opportunity to learn more about rugby - a sport many had never played before – and meet local police officers. The initiative has seen police working with Old Alleynians Rugby Club in Dulwich and The Harlequins Foundation, the charitable arm of the Twickenham-based club.

Sergeant Chris Bright, who is a rugby coach in his spare time, came up with the idea of joining forces.

He said: “The idea of ‘Project Rugby’ came to me one day whilst at work and I saw a young man running from a police officer and I thought, “This young man should be running on the rugby pitch instead of from the police”. From that moment, ‘Project Rugby’ was born.”

Throughout four one-hour sessions in schools across south London, police

officers met students and answered Q&As about the police, aiming to build trust.

Rugby coaches introduced the sport’s core values - such as teamwork and discipline - and taught the skills of the sport, before putting these into practice playing non-contact games.

The final coaching session was given by coaches from Harlequins RFC on Tuesday, February 12 with support from Alleyns and the police. Both clubs hope to keep in touch and continue supporting the young people who took part.

“Many communities do not get

exposure to rugby and the host of benefits it brings and we hope that through this project we can aim to give young people a sense of belonging, be part of the rugby community and socialise and make new friends,” Sergeant Bright added.

“Whilst we also intend to educate young people on aspects such as crime reduction, interacting with police and inform them on topics such as stop and search and knife crime, we also want to listen to any concerns the students may be having at home or in their local communities.”

A FUNDRAISER has been launched in memory of a muchloved Rotherhithe man who helped establish a Bermondsey artists’ network.

Kevin Bolger, who died aged 67 in December, was heavily involved in the Bermondsey Artists Group since it was founded in 1983.

The group exhibits work from local artists in CGP London galleries in Southwark Park.

Around £360 of a £500 target has been raised so far in Mr Bolger’s name, who was a regular at the nearby Mayflower pub – even having ‘Kev’s place’ written on the wall by where he used to sit.

His brother Tom, 68, who set up the fundraiser, said: “He was just someone everyone liked, I don’t know anyone who didn’t like him.

“He was doing something with art every day, spending a lot of time designing t-shirts for pop groups. He even did one for Pink Floyd.

“He worked at St Martin’s [College] as a fabric technician part time, but that gave him access to the kit the rest of the time.”

The artist, who lived on Swan Road, even had a hand in some of the borough’s distinctive public artworks, including the ‘Sunbeam Weekly and Pilgrim’s Pocket’ statue adjacent to the

river in Rotherhithe.

The Bermondsey Artists Group said it was “deeply grateful and indeed sincerely moved” by the family’s fundraiser.

“His legacy in the form of this fund in his name will be invaluable in supporting the group’s activities, including the forthcoming exhibition by the Bermondsey Artists’ Group at CGP London in Southwark Park to be held in October this year.

“I’m certain he would wish us ‘all the best’ on a venture that not only supports but celebrates local artists,” the Bermondsey Artists Group and CGP London told the News.

Some of Kevin’s artefacts will also be given over to the Bermondsey Artists Group – which he first got involved with during the eighties – said Tom, for their archives or to be displayed in the future.

"Kev was a hoarder and when it came to clearing out his flat, we found a cornucopia of objects’ d’art and curios, bus tickets, postcards, collections of Tshirts he’d printed and more," Tom added. "His flat was full of memories, of joy, of sadness and of love.

"For me, the standout item that we found in the middle of a pile hiding his coffee table was a drawing with this message, “If I die sorry about the mess.

ISLA CATON, the toddler battling neuroblastoma, is cancerfree – despite her parents being told she had months to live.

The four-year-old Hammers fan captured the hearts of both West Ham and Millwall fans alike, who have put aside their fierce football rivalry to fundraise for the little girl.

In July 2018, parents Nikki and Michael were told little Isla only had about three to six months to live – but last week in Barcelona where Isla is receiving private treatment, they were told she is cancer-free.

Speaking to the News from Spain, mum Nikki said she was “literally bawling in the middle of the room” when she got the happy news on Friday.

“Everyone was looking at me like I was crazy!” she said. “I still can’t quite believe it now. This is amazing, it’s amazing for all the other children too.

“It’s been a hell of a long road, it’s been non-stop for Isla too, she’s never been off-treatment. [But] we’re hoping by July all the treatment will be over.”

The battle is not over for the little tot, who is yet to have two more chemo

treatments, an antibody treatment as well as a vaccine which would hopefully prevent the neuroblastoma from ever returning.

The next two crucial stages mean that further fundraising is still needed, despite having spent around £400,000 so far, explained Nikki.

“We’ve still got about six months to go,” she told the News.

In a message to those who have donated so far, Nikki said the family was grateful beyond words – and that donors had saved Isla’s life.

“Without all those people donating we could not have saved Isla’s life,” she said. “Thank-you for helping save her life. We will never be able to express how grateful we are.”

The family, who are from Stratford, hope that if the next six months of treatment and fundraising go successfully, they will finally see Isla enjoying a normal childhood.

“All I want is to see her in a nativity play”, said Nikki. “She’s not been allowed to be a child. We just want her to have a normal childhood.”

Lions fans have been among those raising money for Isla, as her plight has transcended football rivalries.

Some even donned West Ham strips on a sponsored walk in April last year to raise nearly £30,000 for the toddler.

Peckham to host the first exhibition of black women with cancer

THE FIRST portrait exhibition in the UK to feature black and ethnic minority women cancer patients and survivors goes on display in Peckham this month.

Black Women Rising – The Untold Cancer Stories, profiles fourteen women from BAME backgrounds at different stages of their cancer treatment and recovery, photographed

by Noam Friedman.

Exhibition creator Leanne Pero, from Peckham, was diagnosed at 30 years of age with stage three breast cancer, six months after her mother was diagnosed with the disease for the second time.

She says the project aims to challenge myths about cancer that still exist among some black communities, and help support women going through diagnosis and treatment.

Leanne says back-to-back operations, including a double mastectomy, and gruelling rounds of chemotherapy gave her mental health a ‘battering’ during her treatment, describing the emotional support promised by healthcare professionals as ‘non-existent’.

After setting up an online blog to chronicle her experience, she says many other patients from BAME backgrounds contacted her to share their own stories, including those who had been rejected by their families and wider community, women who were told cancer wasn’t a ‘black disease’, patients shunned by friends afraid they were infectious, and others told their cancer was a curse in punishment for past deeds.

Leanne and her mother Amanda, and 49-year-old Rosemarie Flash, a midwife from Peckham diagnosed with breast cancer in August last year, who described the experience as ‘very empowering’.

She said: “I feel like I’m not alone which has enable me to embrace my new journey alongside individuals with a shared experience.”

Also photographed are primary school teacher Rosemarie Morgan, from Peckham, who was diagnosed with grade three, triple negative breast cancer, a particularly aggressive form of the disease, and 34-year-old teaching assistant Charlene Young, from Rotherhithe, who has bone cancer.

Charlene, who was diagnosed in September 2011, said taking part had been a bonding experience with the other women: “I am truly grateful and proud to be a part of something so special,” she said. “I couldn't have chosen a better bunch of women to continue my journey with me.”

Leanne told the News she hopes the exhibition can help push for more support: "I’m absolutely delighted to be able to create a platform for these wonderfully brave and courageous cancer warriors to share their stories and join me in spreading some muchneeded cancer awareness amongst our BME communities.

“When I was going through my own cancer treatment I was actually shocked at the lack of services tailored and catered for BME patients - even things such as getting a decent wig to match our hair types seemed impossible for services to get right.

“We have had enough of our needs and voices going unheard, we have had enough of cultural taboos and myths stopping us from speaking out

about our experiences and traumas within our communities.

“This exhibition is the start of some much-needed conversation with everyone - cancer care services, the media and most importantly our communities.

“It’s a time to excitedly change the narrative of cancer amongst the BME Community."

POLICE CAPTURE COUPLE BRAZENLY STEALING BAG AT HEATHROW

AN ELEPHANT and Castle couple were caught “brazenly” stealing a bag at Heathrow airport, police revealed in shocking footage on Friday in a bid to warn to other passengers.

Criminal duo Daniel Kennedy, 54, and Denise Blackburn, 45, of County Street, were caught on camera as they carried out the bag theft at a phone shop in Heathrow Airport on October 31, 2018.

The CCTV footage shows the pair laughing and watching their targets – a couple who had just landed from Ghana, before appearing to discuss their plans.

As the unsuspecting passengers turn their back, Blackburn stood next to one of the victims at the shop counter to block their view – while accomplice Kennedy brushed past the luggage, stealing a handbag from the top.

The bag contained a large quantity of money, jewellery and both victims’ passports.

Investigating officer, PC Jon Houston from the Met Police Aviation Policing Command, said the footage was a reminder to passengers to keep luggage in sight at all times.

“It’s easy to be distracted at an airport as our minds are often on other things, and luggage is cumbersome to carry around, but the benefits of keeping your eyes on your bags far outweigh the distress and disruption caused by them being stolen,” he said.

The duo then led police on a “ludicrous” attempt to throw them off the scent, driving themselves into the carpark but having their son, Ryan Kennedy, 19, drive them out while they hid in the backseat covered in a jacket.

But police trawled through CCTV footage and identified the couple, arresting Blackburn and Kennedy at their home address.

Officers recovered some of the victims’ money and jewellery from the house, including an Armani watch which Blackburn was wearing at the time of arrest. They also discovered a “quantity of cannabis.”

Daniel Kennedy was also arrested a week later.

All three pleaded guilty to their crimes at Isleworth Crown Court on Monday, 25 February.

Daniel Kennedy was jailed for two years for theft, driving otherwise in accordance with a license and driving with no insurance.

He is also disqualified from driving for 16 months. A suspended sentence of eight months’ imprisonment relating to a previous conviction has also been activated, meaning he will serve a total of two years, eight months behind bars.

for theft and cannabis possession.

Meanwhile, the couple’s son, Ryan Kennedy, was conditionally discharged for 12 months and has been disqualified from driving for a year, for driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance and possession of cannabis.

DCI Sharon Brookes, of the Aviation Policing Command, said: “I am pleased that my team were able to return some of the stolen items to the victims.

“The Met Police is determined to keep people flying in and out of the UK safe from opportunists like Blackburn and Daniel Kennedy.

“The victims sent a message of thanks to PC Houston for his work and I was delighted to read that, subsequently, they will continue to holiday in the UK.”

The crime has not been reported to police by Mr Gibson (pictured), or by the trust who run the site, he said.

“They [the trust] feel it was just oneoff. A person who thought ‘what’s the down-side’ – well they found out what the down-side was,” he told the News.

The bees “were sad that you left so quickly and empty-handed - and they hope that those swellings will go down soon,” the business said in a message to the unlucky criminal.

Luckily however, the bees were fine after their brush with the burglar, due to the unseasonably warm weather.

suspects they did not intend to steal a hive, but were after the tools and equipment kept in storage.

“There’s a lot of hive thefts over the country. I don’t think they were looking to steal the hive, I think it was more an opportunistic look at the equipment,” said Dale who runs the business with his wife, Sarah Wyndham-Lewis, who extraordinarily is allergic to bees.

But Mr Gibson added: “There isn’t much physical evidence, we haven’t got any evidence to the event, we just have evidence of what happened after.”

Council fails to hit government’s new homes target EXCLUSIVE

SOUTHWARK WAS among the worst performing London boroughs for building the new homes it requires over the past three years, according to a recently published Government analysis.

The Government’s ‘Housing Delivery Test’ ranks the number of new homes built of any type from 2015 to 2018 in local authorities across the country versus the number of homes they needed to build in the same period.

Anything less than 95 per cent of new homes built to amount needed is considered a test ‘failure’ – and developers in Southwark only managed to build 80 per cent of homes the borough requires.

Southwark needed to build 5,941 new homes in the three years, the test states, but only managed 4,771 - a shortfall of 1,170 new homes.

The statistic puts Southwark among the worst performing London boroughs for housing delivery during the period, building fewer required homes than nearby Lambeth or Tower Hamlets.

Redbridge in East London was the worst performing borough, managing to build only 38 per cent of the new homes it requires over the three-year-period.

Cllr Johnson Situ, the council cabinet member with responsibility for development, said that delivering “genuinely affordable homes” was a priority for town hall bosses but it was operating in a “particularly challenging” environment.

He told the News: “We have delivered 4,771 homes against one of the highest targets in London, and particularly challenging in a densely-built, centralLondon borough where town planning requires a fine balance to protect existing buildings and residents’ wishes as well as increasing the housing supply.

“We also have an ambitious target for home-building that we have set ourselves, a long-term strategy which, over the years, will exceed the targets set by the Government and ensure that there is good quality housing for everyone for years to come.”

He added he recognised more needed to be done to address the housing crisis, and that the council is “looking at a range of measures to ensure homes are built quickly after planning permission is granted.”

The opposition Liberal Democrats’ housing spokesperson, Cllr Hamish McCallum, said part of the problem was a lack of consultation from the council on its development projects.

“As a result, new plans to build homes are understandably met with suspicion and resentment,” he told the News.

“They're seen to be done to local people, rather than with them.

“Labour's instinct for imposing centrally planned decisions has built up problems that we are now all dealing with.”

He added: “Only by working together can we start to really address the housing crisis.”

Alternative figures provided to the council by the London Development Database appear to paint a rosier picture than the Government’s assessment, stating 5,252 homes have been built in Southwark in those three years.

But this would still fall below the 95 per cent benchmark for what the Government considers successful housing delivery, a shortfall of over 600 homes.

According to guidance published by the Ministry for Housing Communities and Local Government, authorities which do not see 95 per cent of the homes they need being built should develop an action plan to address the under-delivery for future years.

The borough, like many London local authorities, has sharply experienced the effects of the country’s housing crisis, with over 2,700 households in temporary accommodation in the borough.

CHARGES IN Choumert Road car park will be reduced by Southwark Council until Rye Lane is re-opened to traffic next year after gas mains works are completed.

Cllr Kieron Williams, the council’s cabinet member for jobs, skills and innovation, confirmed the news on Tuesday this week, after lobbying from businesses in Peckham.

Last week, as the News reported, Southwark Council and SGN announced £30,000 of funding had also been earmarked for a series of events to help boost footfall for businesses in the area.

“Having visited traders along Rye Lane I‘ve heard how much this is affecting them,” he explained. “It’s a mixed picture but there’s no doubt many have seen a drop in footfall. Having listened to their concerns we are putting in place a package of support. We’ve announced funding for events and creative ideas to bring more people to the high streets.

We are appointing a business advisor to support affected traders. We have asked the Valuation Office Agency for a business rate reduction for the area, and I’m pleased to announce we will be reducing parking charges in the Choumert Road car park for the duration of the works. Rye Lane is full of fantastic independent businesses, and we

are determined to support them through these works and beyond.”

Gas company SGN now says it has completed the second stage of its major mains upgrade in Rye Lane expected to last until January 2020.

Old mains pipes between Highshore Road and Elm Grove have been replaced, and on Monday the next section between Elm Grove and Blenheim Grove began.

A signed diversion is now in place via Hanover Park and Consort Road. Although this section is closed to traffic, Rye Lane remains open to people in foot.

The company has also confirmed traders will be able to make quarterly compensation claims, rather than having to wait until the works are completed.

As they say - ‘a woman’s work is never done’!

I

NTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S Day is a great moment for women everywhere to take stock.

And with more women MPs than ever before (208 out of 650) it’s a big day for Parliament too.

So how are we doing?

For a start, there’s now a strong Women’s Caucus in Parliament pushing for progress for women.

We’ve got that because there are now women MPs in all parties and we are finding ways to work together across party lines. Here’s some of the progress we’ve made over the last year: Parliament has backed the #MeToo movement demanding that women at work should be free from sexual assault and harassment - and that goes for women working in Parliament too. We’ve stepped up our quest for women to be paid fairly, requiring all organisations to publish the gender pay gap. It was no surprise that it showed that 8 out

of 10 organisations pay their men more than their women. We don’t believe that women at work are worth less than men so we need some tough penalties for those who continue with pay discrimination.

Everyone now agrees that tackling domestic violence is a priority yet we still see the relentless toll of men killing their wives and girlfriends and too often the courts hand out woefully inadequate sentences.

There are always warning signs and we’re still too slow to act on them.

It’s great that we’ve got more women MPs than ever before. But we’re also facing a massive misogynist backlash. Death threats against women MPs are now almost routine. No woman MP should have to look over her shoulder or change what she says or how she votes in parliament because of threats of violence. It’s time we recognised that threatening and harassing women MPs is not legitimate protest or just part of the “rough and

tumble” of politics. It’s a threat to our democracy and those who do it whether online or in person - should be prosecuted.

It’s encouraging to see women all around the world getting elected to their parliaments. And there’s a growing network of women MPs from all around the world working together. Though we come from very different countries, many of the problems are the same. We want not just to be in our parliaments but to be sharing power on equal terms with men MPs. We’re not there yet but, working together and with determination, we’re making progress.

So we’ll celebrate International Women’s Day, and pause to give ourselves credit for the battles we’ve fought and won. But we’ll only stop for a moment because we need to get on with tackling the glaring inequality which still holds women back. As they say “a woman’s work is never done”!

NEW report into girls, gangs and their abusive relationships highlights how gangs are not just responsible for violence on the streets, but abuse behind closed doors, too.

There is little in the way of data or research into the impact gangs and gang culture have on women, so former Southwark councillor Samantha Jury-Dada’s research is all the more important.

As she rightly says, if we don’t know who these women and girls are, and how many are affected, how can we possibly hope to help them and prevent many more from facing similar violence and abuse?

We know that gangs often groom vulnerable children to join their ranks, in exchange for gifts, perceived social status, and a sense of kinship.

Youngsters who may have had significant trauma growing up, and fractured family lives, want to feel appreciated, and that someone has their back. But these bonds are predicated on intimidation, threats, and in some cases – horrific violence. It makes sense that anyone brutalised by a gang, made to do things they know are inherently wrong, and controlled through fear, manipulation, and a misguided sense of loyalty, could take this blueprint for unhealthy, toxic relationships and replicate it at home.

Jury-Dada argues getting someone out of a gang lifestyle isn’t enough. We need to make sure the same pattern of behaviour doesn’t play out throughout these young men’s lives and relationships.

Although most knife crime in Southwark is linked to robberies, there has been a series of gang-related deaths, and women who died at the hands of abusive partners and family members in our borough.

Not all of them will have sought out help. But it is clear that many who are suffering don’t fit the ‘ideal victim’ stereotype, and are left falling through the cracks. They may be uncoperative, see their toxic relationship as ‘normal’ and, like their abusers, have a chequered history with the law.

One girl who did want help was seventeen-year-old Katrina Makunova. Katrina died during an argument with her 21-year-old ex-boyfriend, who had been previously convicted for ‘county lines’ drug dealing. Her family say Katrina made numerous reports to police saying she was in fear of her life after he abused and humiliated her, including allegedly throwing her out of his flat naked, but nothing was done.

Whatever happened on the day she died , we know Katrina was a in a toxic relationship with a dangerous, allegedly violent, older man with a criminal history. If there were attempted interventions, they didn’t work. She – like many others – deserved so much better.

NOT EVEN our fighting men and women are safe from chubbiness, says a former professor of surgery at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

“The most serious eating disorder by far is the obesity epidemic, which is now impinging on the Armed Forces,” warned Lord McColl of Dulwich during a Lords debate last week.

The problem is so serious, he said, that modifications to military equipment need to be made – including to ejector seats in fighter planes, to accommodate their porky passengers.

Navy sailors aren’t so slim either. “We may have to enlarge the escape hatches of submarines”, Lord McColl added.

IT’S BEEN an eventful start for Fiona Colley, former Southwark cabinet member, who has begun a £100,000-ayear post as Lewisham’s assistant director of comms and strategy.

The opposition Liberal Democrat group on the council have criticised her appointment by accusing the Labour-led borough of giving her the role for political reasons, as she is a former Labour councillor. The borough, when it was announcing her appointment, pointed to a 45strong pool of applicants and said her appointment brings a wealth of experience from the public and private sectors.

First order of business for Lewisham’s new PR supremo, it seems then, is to manage some negative press about herself.

Plod’s poor pasta?

THE CLOSURE of Camberwell and Kennington police stations – due by the end of March – has caused dismay in many quarters of the community.

But other vital police stations in the borough have been left more mixed reviews online, some ostensibly from those who’ve been in custody.

One possibly confused reviewer has this handy tip for anyone thinking of whiling away their time at a bobby’s pleasure in Walworth Police station: “Don’t get the lasagne... it’s disgusting.”

A sting in the tale

A “FECKLESS marauder” got more than they bargained for when they reportedly vaulted eight feet into an apiary at Potters Fields Park last week.

The intruder landed directly onto a Bermondsey Street Bees hive, knocking it to its side.

The bees are alright but were sad to see their unexpected guest leave in such a hurry. The intruder left empty-handed, but still had something to show for their endeavours. “[The bees] hope that those swellings will go down soon,” said the business. (full story in news section)

A LEGAL challenge arguing that developer Delancey ‘misled’ Southwark Council over its Elephant and Castle regeneration proposals has been mounted by campaigners who hope planning approval for the scheme can be overturned in court.

Groups including the 35% campaign, Up the Elephant, and Southwark Defend Council Housing want to take their claims to the planning court, arguing that Delancey was not upfront with councillors about the number of social housing in the scheme and how they would be delivered.

A crowdfunder has now been launched with £2,361 pledged against a target of £5,000 to help pay costs. The challenge is being supported by Southwark Law Centre and the Public Interest Law Centre.

Out of a total of 979 homes built to rent on the site, which currently has no housing, 330 will be ‘affordable’ and 116 at social rent. Campaigners say funding from the London Mayor’s office could give the scheme an extra 42 homes but this has been rejected by Delancey.

Jerry Flynn, from the 35% campaign, said the social housing outlined in the plans will only be completed if the ‘west side’ part of the proposals are delivered, which will not be built for another decade.

He claimed the ‘devil in the detail’ meant the developer had ‘managed to pull the wood over the council’s eyes with a deal which could leave us with

little or no social rented housing’.

Campaigners have also criticised the impact on existing businesses who will have to move during the redevelopment.

A spokesperson for Distriandina, one of London’s oldest Latin American dance and music venues, which also has a restaurant, coffee shop and bakery, says the relocation options offered would mean significant reduction in their floor space, meaning it may not be able to continue as a live music and dance venue.

“Any development scheme in

Elephant and Castle should seek to mitigate the impact on the existing community as much as possible,” the spokesperson explained.

“As it currently stands, this development scheme fails to do this, due to its limited relocation fund for traders, lack of suitable relocation options for larger traders and complete disregard for the Latin American cultural institutions in Elephant and Castle.”

Responding to a request to comment on the claims councillors had been ‘misled’ over the proposals, a council

spokesperson told the News: “We are aware of the application but as this is now a legal matter for the courts, the council will not be commenting further until the outcome of the proceedings are known.”

Meanwhile, a representative for Delancey said the legal challenge was ‘disappointing’ and warned the move would only create more uncertainty for traders.

“It is now likely the timeline for starting on site will be pushed back which is likely to have a direct impact

on a significant number of the existing businesses located in the shopping centre, who were hoping for stability and certainty in order to plan for their future,” the spokesperson told the News.

“We remain committed to creating a thriving town centre in Elephant and Castle, and are confident about the significant benefits that the redevelopment would bring to the area, both now and in the future.

“We will consider our next steps as we await the outcome of the judicial review process.”

Specialist skin care faster and closer to home Trust gets thumbs up P from staff eople in Southwark are receiving specialist skin care faster thanks to a new service that means patients see a specially trained GP or hospital consultant within weeks of referral.

The Guy’s and St Thomas’ led community dermatology service has more than halved the waiting time for people who need assessment and treatment for skin conditions like eczema, acne and psoriasis, from around 17 weeks wait to just six weeks. Guy's and St Thomas', King’s College Hospital and IHL (a group of local GP practices) are working together to deliver the service which offers clinics at Elm Lodge Surgery in Herne Hill and at Guy’s Hospital.

Patients are assessed by GPs with special dermatology (skin) training often alongside a hospital consultant from Guy’s and St Thomas’. Most referrals from the local area can be managed within the service but patients who need more specialist care are referred on to hospital.

Eric Large, 66, from Herne Hill, a City of London and Westminster guide, says: “I noticed a dry, brown mark just below my right eye in June 2018. I’d had two or three dry marks on my face before, but this mark was different - it seemed to be slightly sensitive to sunlight.

“My father had skin cancer and so I knew that if there was an issue it was better to treat it sooner rather than later.

Evelina London Children’s Hospital and community services have introduced NHS rainbow badges for its staff to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT+) patients.

The scheme at Evelina London, which is part of Guy’s and St Thomas’, is now being rolled out across the whole Trust, following a successful pilot at the children’s hospital, launched last October.

The move follows a recent Stonewall

survey that found that one in seven (14%) LGBT people have avoided medical treatment for fear of discrimination and almost one in four (23%) have witnessed discriminatory or negative remarks against LGBT people by healthcare staff.

The badge is an NHS logo superimposed on the rainbow pride flag and can be worn on lanyards or uniforms. They promote a message of inclusion and are a sign that the wearer is someone you can talk to about issues of sexuality and gender identity.

Thomas’, says, “Around 20% of the patients seen in the service are young adults with acne. It’s a condition that can be very stressful and difficult to cope with, psychologically.

“We don’t want patients to be taking antibiotics (a common treatment for acne) for long periods whilst they wait to access treatments that are only available under the supervision of a consultant. Patients appreciate being able to access this specialist care quickly.”

The hospital has also created a toolkit to support and encourage other NHS organisations to implement the scheme. More than 100 clinical commissioning groups, GP surgeries and hospitals from across the country have already expressed an interest in rolling it out.

The project has been backed by the Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who regularly wears the badge, and Strictly Come Dancing star, and former Evelina London paediatrician, Dr Ranj.

Dr Michael Farquhar, NHS rainbow badge initiative lead and sleep consultant at Evelina London, said: “Despite improving social attitudes in the UK, LGBT+ people can still face significant barriers to accessing healthcare and this can have a detrimental impact on physical and mental health “Wearing a NHS rainbow badge is a way for our staff to show that Evelina London is an open, non-judgemental and inclusive place for children, young people and their families who identify as LGBT+ and that we are here for them in every way.”

Dr Naomi Kemp, a GP with an extended role in dermatology at the Elm Lodge surgery, says: “This service means patients are seen in the right clinic, first time. Our specially trained GPs can also tap into Dr Woolf’s expertise to get an early consultant opinion if needed.”

Guy’s and St Thomas’ has the highest staff engagement score for combined acute and community trusts for the fourth consecutive year, according to the national NHS Staff Survey results, published on Tuesday 26 February.

The Trust achieved a 41% response rate, its highest rating since 2015 and on-par with the national average. It also achieved the best score of all combined acute and community trusts England in three themes – staff engagement, safety culture and quality of appraisals.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ scored better than the national average on six out of 10 themes, and matched the average on two themes.

A total of 87% of our staff who responded are happy with the standard of care we provide, compared to the national average of 70%, and 77% of staff would recommend the Trust as a place to work, compared to the national average of 61%.

The Trust scored below national average on two themes – ‘equality, diversity and inclusion’, and ‘bullying and harassment’.

Amanda Pritchard, chief executive, said: “I am delighted that we are top for staff engagement for the fourth year running. Thank you to all our staff for their continued dedication and commitment to making the Trust a great place to work. It is fantastic that in many areas we have exceeded the best scores nationally.”

TRANSPORT FOR London is proposing to ban the right hand turn out of Southwark Park Road to Jamaica Road in a new consultation for the CS4 cycle route.

Taxis, buses and cyclists would be exempt from the ban, which would last an initial twelve months if approved.

Other measures in the proposals include creating new straight across crossings for pedestrians on Southwark Park Road and West Lane and new right turn pockets for cyclists at the junctions.

Motorists driving east from Southwark Park Road would be able to get onto Jamaica Road by Clements and St James’ Road, said TfL. “Reducing traffic volumes on Southwark Park Road would reduce congestion at peak periods, make it easier for pedestrians to cross the road and improve conditions for people who want to cycle,” TfL said in its consultation published online last week.

“It would also ease the eastbound flow along Jamaica Road towards Rotherhithe Tunnel by reducing the number of vehicles joining from Southwark Park Road.”

Modelling suggests barring the righthand turn would displace motorists using coming from Southwark Park Road to the Rotherhithe Tunnel in favour of other crossings.

This is the second round of consultation on the CS4 cycle route, with the first round receiving 3,200 responses.

AIR POLLUTION levels in an East Dulwich playground have halved since a ‘green screen’ was put up a year ago.

Goose Green Primary and Nursery’s 2.2 metre-high and 80-metre long ivy fence was built in February 2018. The dense ivy acts as a pollution barrier, by catching pollutants inside its leaves.

A survey shows that nitrogen dioxide – NO2 – levels inside the playground have gone down by 48 per cent since the screen was put up a year ago.

This means the playground now falls within the EU’s legal limits for NO2. Levels inside the screen are also 52 per cent lower than current readings on roads nearby.

The state academy has received £6,000 funding from Sadiq Khan’s Greener City Fund to improve air quality around the school, which is bordered by busy main roads.

Last year, it became the first state school in London to install air purifiers.

Research shows that exposure to particulate matter – the type found in exhaust pipe fumes – can reduce their lung capacity by up to seventeen per cent.

One in fourteen people over 65 years of age will develop dementia. As the UK’s population ages, the total number of people living with the condition will continue to rise.

Dementia is a group of related symptoms associated with the decline of brain functioning, which can include problems with memory loss, mental sharpness, language, understanding and difficulties carrying out day-to-day activities.

Although there is no cure, it is diagnosed early its effects can be slowed down.

As the News reported, Redthread’s youth workers support young patients at King’s College Hospital’s trauma unit, and help them break a cycle of violence whether at home or on the street.

At the game on Saturday, February 16, the club held bucket collections, donated proceeds from the doors, held a raffle, and auctioned off a specially-commissioned Redthread kit.

Southwark has record levels of diabetes despite major efforts in tackling obesity

THE NUMBER of people living with diabetes in Southwark has risen to a record 16,720, new figures reveal.

A DAY centre in Dulwich is the first in Southwark to get a new ‘magic table’ to help people with dementia.

According to data obtained by the charity Diabetes UK, the number of people diagnosed with diabetes in Southwark has continued to increase, with a rise from to 16,720 from 16,121 in the last year. However, this is less than a previous jump by 3,310 the year before.

6.2 per cent of Southwark’s population now has diabetes, with the vast majority having Type 2 diabetes, which accounts for around 90 per cent of diabetes cases in the UK. Despite efforts to reduce high obesity rates, encourage healthy eating and more exercise, the number of people living with the condition has risen for another year in a row.

Whereas Type 1 diabetes is a condition some people are born with where they don’t produce enough insulin, the majority of Type 2 diabetes cases can be avoided through healthier lifestyles.

As the symptoms can be easy to miss in the early stages, many people are only diagnosed after already developing complications including

kidney, eye and nerve problems.

Symptoms to look out for include going to the toilet a lot, feeling thirsty, feeling more tired than usual, and losing weight without trying.

Age, family history and ethnicity also play a part in the risk of developing the disease, with people with African-Caribbean, black African or south Asian heritage between two and four times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than white people.

Roz Rosenblatt, Diabetes UK’s head of London, said: “Thousands of Type 2 diabetes cases could be prevented if we help people understand their risk and how to reduce it.

“Even though the older people get, the more likely they are to have Type 2 diabetes, it is never too early to know your risk, so that you can make changes to prevent or delay it.

“The signs of Type 2 diabetes are often not obvious, that’s why spotting them early can be life-changing.

“Early diagnosis means that fewer people will experience diabetesrelated complications such as sight loss, amputation, kidney failure, stroke and heart disease, because they could seek support to manage their condition effectively as soon as possible.”

arbouring resentful thoughts: a traffic warden’s ticket, the tax man claiming your rebate or the neighbour playing techno till 4am is not unusual. Acting on them by way of murder is, as life teaches, ‘unlawful’. Thrashing out this human dilemma is what Stephen Adly Guirgis does with aplomb in his production of ‘Jesus Hopped The ‘A’ Train’, writes Carolyn Taylor.

Staging this dark, prison-based comedy through theatre in the round worked wonders for this play. Inmates are subjected to our scrutiny. Standing in orange prison garbs upon their catwalk of shame, incarcerated, we hold power to forgive or condemn, we are judge and jury. No hiding either from the brutality meted out by Valdez, a prison guard played by Joplin Sibitain, who boasts, ‘I am the constitution’, liking nothing better than to hang anyone with a misdemeanour. As Valdez judges them, we judge him, them, the attorney and so on... Digging deep we question ‘good ’and ‘bad'.

A naive belief in law and order presents us with an attorney, Mary Jane Hanra-han (Dervla Kerwin), who uses truth and lie statistics to manipulate verdicts. Mary recognises human denial for what it is telling us ‘My father was still smoking while in an oxygen tent’ - the truth just needs to be palatable.

So, is faith possible in an unjust society? Set on Riker’s Island prison, in a coun-try responsible for imprisoning more people than any other, it would seem im-probable. Yet Lucius Jenkins, adeptly brought to life

Exuberance and Gusto can’t save the Can Can WITH A rowdy opening of ‘Backstage Ballet’ the scene was set for Phil Willmott’s staging of CanCan!Writes Susan Hallissey...

As we were introduced to the Orpehius Theatre Troupe where Jane (Kathy Peacock) is leaving the ensemble she treasures so much to marry the well to do Christian Bontoux (Damjan Mrackovich).

Jane soon finds practising the life of a lady increasingly difficult (she is on a trial run as it were!) and stifling. After an evening when her friends visit, she decides to leave and return to the stage.

This is wonderful news to Monsieur Bontoux (Phil Willmott), the father who felt his son would be marrying beneath him. However, he has other plans to ruin the troupe.

Scattered throughout a clichéd storyline is an abundance of songs and large ensemble dance scenes, and you cannot deny the gusto and exuberance of the performers - The choreography is remarkable considering the size of the cast and venue. Plus, I must mention the divine La Goulue played by PK Taylor.

La Goulue’s opening song in act two is deadpan and humorous and one of my favourite pieces of the show. Another

shout out to the awesome Tango performed by Margot (Grace Manley) and Jacques (James Alexander-Chew).

But back to the ‘plot’: In Act Two the now estranged Christian and Jane demonstrate their anguish in a more contemporary and moving dance sequence, and drawing to a close, Christian announces how amazing the finale will be and he is not wrong. This is the rip-roaring event of the evening. High kicks, splits, whooping and screaming.

Alas, there were no surprises in this piece – even the La Goulue and Monsieur Bontoux storyline was less than a revelation. So if you want to see great dancing with a young and energetic cast then go along, but do expect a stilted and dated plot that holds the dancing together like a thin thread and is often unnecessary. It’s a Can Can that too often Can’t.

They pull apart their marriage and their characters until the dealer turns up to make an offer for everything: the furniture, their memories, their lives, their integrity.

It is in this first half that Miller shows he can do comedy. Suchet’s hamming up of the Jewish dealer almost has Coyle’s cop corpsing more than once and the audience loved it. They are very obviously enjoying these roles and are having a good time on stage.

As they dance around each other Victor wants a price while Solomon wants to talk about everything else other than a price while hinting at how used furniture is not worth so much… When they finally agree on a figure, Walter, the estranged and wealthy brother turns up out of the blue to close Act One. After the interval the siblings hack away at their relationship, peeling back revelation after revelation after mind-blowing revelation turning both of their pasts into lies, as they alternately try to crush one another with three decades of secrets. It almost became a revelation too far and this wordy, shouty second act sometimes became too confusing to keep up.

The message was clear, though: the price of making the mistake of keeping family secrets was losing a brother.

DULWICH HAMLET’S survival hopes received a huge boost as they defeated Dartford 2-0 in front of 2,779 fans at Champion Hill last Saturday.

Jamie Mascoll’s 27th-minute goal and Decarrey Sheriff’s clincher in the last minute saw Hamlet move up to sixteenth in the National League South table, eight points clear of the relegation zone.

After the previous Saturday’s 5-2 defeat at Torquay United, boss Gavin Rose brought back goalkeeper Preston Edwards and gave a home debut to Aryan Tajbakhsh. Loan signings George Essuman, Luke Wanadio and Mascoll also started.

After a nervy start against promotion-chasing Dartford, Hamlet settled and Dipo Akinyemi’s sixth-minute effort was blocked before Nathan Green and Nyren Clunis also went close.

The hosts then deservedly went in front when Clunis crossed from the right and Mascoll brilliantly volleyed in past stopper Bailey Vose.

At the other end of the pitch Hamlet defender Michael Chambers was standing firm to prevent Dartford getting back on level terms.

And the home side could have extended their advantage before the break but missed chances through Clunis and Akinyemi.

Koutouan secured a unanimous points win over a fighter from Barnstable ABC. Coach Terry Pearson said: “This was a great win for Jacob in only his thirteenth bout while his opponent was taking part in his 53rd. His opponent never took a backward step forcing Jacob to box on the back foot but his counter-boxing skills where just too good and he constantly landed with single counters and combinations to get himself the win.”

Aguilera lost his contest against a Ruislip ABC fighter. Pearson added: “We knew this would be tough bout as his opponent had a great record on paper but we believed Miguel had what it took to beat him.

“And in the first round that looked the case as Miguel went on the front foot throwing lots of combinations and taking the round. But after that his opponent upped his work rate and took the bout on points.

“I couldn't be any prouder of both boxers as they both gave it their all.”

Love Football Not Racism event at Hamlet Menace suffer ‘Gas leak

DULWICH HAMLET are hosting a gig night at their Champion Hill ground this weekend in support of a new Love Football Hate Racism initiative, aimed at bringing football fans together in opposition to racial discrimination.

The night, organised in partnership with the Love Music Hate Racism scheme – and creatively renamed for Hamlet purposes – and Fans for Diversity will take place on Friday, March 8. Live music will be provided by The Estimators and DJ Cello.

Speakers will include Paul Canoville, who was Chelsea’s first black player, Anwar Uddin, the first British-Asian professional player and professional coach in the UK, Leon Mann, a renowned sports presenter turned race activist in sport, and Tracey Brown, who is part of Chelsea Pride, an LGBT supporters group.

Dulwich Hamlet fan David Rodgers helped pair his beloved club with the campaign. He said the club did not hesitate to take him up on the idea when he suggested it.

Canoville overcame homelessness as a

youth to sign for Chelsea in 1981.

However, he was subject to horrific abuse during his time at Stamford Bridge and beyond.

In a quote from his award-winning autobiography, Canoville offers a snapshot into his experience.

“I hardly dared look around. They were right behind me. I snatched a glimpse. They were all wearing blue shirts and scarves – Chelsea fans, my side’s fans, faces screwed with pure hatred and anger, all directed at me…I felt physically sick. I was absolutely terrified.”

After some successful periods at Chelsea and Reading, Canoville was forced to retire at just 24 following a succession of injuries.

It left him destitute and his life and health quickly spiralled. By 2005 he had twice been to rehab for crack cocaine addiction ad twice beaten cancer.

He has since revitalised his life working with disabled children and as a motivational speaker on issues of race alongside releasing his autobiography, which won the Best Autobiography accolade in the 2009 British Sports Book Awards.

Uddin also had a successful playing career after coming through the ranks at West Ham. Uddin now represents Fans for

Diversity and said of the event on Friday: “There is so much great work being done by football fans across the country who are working towards positive change. It’s great that the Fans for Diversity campaign can highlight and support this activity.”

The event is open to fans from all clubs, who are encouraged to wear their team’s colours to show a united face against racial discrimination that transcends club rivalries.

Zak Cochrane from organisers Love Music Hate Racism said: “Football and music share a lot in common, they both have a tremendous unifying potential – an ability to bring people from all walks of life together. But it’s not automatic that this will happen.

“That is why it is so important that there are events like this gig which is bringing together football and music lovers against racism and division.”

Rodgers added: “With Dulwich Hamlet having spent the last few seasons engaging in a lot of anti-racism initiatives, we’re pleased that that the campaign is coming to the club as we feel it’d be a fantastic fit with our ethos, and it should be a great day out for all our fans and fans from other clubs.”

THE RYE were away in the third round of the Fred Jolly Trophy last weekend against high-flying FC Royals.

Klajdi Cani gave Peckham the lead early in the second half after being put in by club captain Lukman Mojeed, but his strike was cancelled out by a late free-kick from Metrogas’ Joe Plant.

Kick-off was slightly delayed, after a kit clash forced the visitors to play the game in their training tops.

Peckham had the best of the early exchanges, pumping crosses into the box, but the Metrogas defence remained resolute in a first half which was light on entertainment for the attending supporters.

Peckham began the second half by winning a corner on their left wing

but couldn’t establish aerial dominance.

Finally, the deadlock was broken as Cani gave the hosts the lead.

Substitute Kevin Dance had an opportunity to double the advantage when he slipped the Metrogas offside trap but he fired wide from a tight angle.

A poor Metrogas clearance gave Cani the opportunity to flash the ball across the six-yard box, but none of the three Menace players inside were able to connect with it.

Metrogas emptied their bench for the final fifteen minutes, and in the 85th minute Peckham were made to pay for their failure to find a second goal. Metrogas were awarded a freekick on the edge of the Peckham penalty area, and Plant curled his effort in off Peckham goalkeeper Tommy Hobson’s right-hand post.

FAR FROM feeling the pressure of a relegation fight, James Meredith is relishing the final run-in this season and wants to “do the business” to help get Millwall out of trouble.

Meredith says Millwall are entering the “ruthless” stage of the season, and knows his side can put Bolton “in a position that they might not come out of” with a win in Lancashire on Saturday.

Phil Parkinson’s side have lost 21 out of 35 league games this season, winning only six, and are seven points off safety.

Meredith has the chance to get back his regular left-back place following Murray Wallace’s injury, and the Australian revealed he was the victim of his own work ethic as he picked up a calf problem doing extra running in training.

That, along with the excellent form of Wallace, meant he missed seven consecutive league games from January to March after starting all 46 in 2017-18 and being one of the Lions’ most consistent performers.

Meredith, 30, is in contention to start at the University of Bolton Stadium, in opposition to Parkinson, his manager at Bradford.

Meredith is confident Millwall will get out of trouble and that he can make a significant contribution after his first start in almost two months against Norwich last Saturday.

“I felt good, I felt like I got up to the pace of the game,” Meredith said. “Obviously it being the first game back in you’re a bit rusty. But I enjoyed it, it was just a shame we lost.

“I thought it was a good game, it was an exciting game. We’ve just got to stay together the last eleven league fixtures and do everything we can to get ourselves out of that relegation battle.

“We’ve got a strong squad with good character and I think that we’ll do okay for the rest of the season.

“I had a calf injury that I picked up doing extra running, which was unfortunate and it came at a bit of a bad time.

“Murray Wallace, up until his injury, had been doing well. It was competitive, it was difficult to win the spot back.

Especially when you’ve got someone as professional as Murray.

“I like Murray, and it’s a shame what’s happened to him. You don’t want that kind of stuff happening to a good bloke like him. He’s tough to compete for a position with because he’s very fit, he’s got such a good attitude. He’s a really good person to have in the team.”

Meredith has never been involved in a relegation struggle, like a lot of the current Lions squad, but doesn’t believe the lack of that specific experience will be a hindering factor in the remaining games.

Instead, he believes Millwall have several advantages over other sides that could prove crucial.

“We’ve got a lot of good characters. The last eleven games will be exciting and we’re all up for the challenge,” he said.

“I’ve never been involved in a relegation battle but over my career what I find is that it’s the teams that already feel defeated or let their heads drop, or there’s chaos in the dressing room or with the manager, they’re the teams that struggle.

“You don’t see that here, and maybe with a little bit of luck going our way we’ll be fine. We’ve got to be positive about every game and that’s what the gaffer brings. He makes you excited and wanting to go out trying to win.

“Last season everything was going our way, we had momentum and it seemed we got that luck. When you’re not doing so well it seems the opposite.

“But we’re just going to stick at it.

Millwall will do that. The lads are always going to do that.

“It’s going to be a tough end to the season but we’re looking forward to it. I want to go in and do the business.”

Bolton’s off-field problems took another twist this week when their training ground was closed on Monday and then the catering company they use on matchdays said they wouldn’t cover Saturday’s game as they are owed money.

Staff members at all levels were also still owed wages earlier this week, and at one point Bolton were given 24 hours to prove to the local council and authorities that they could provide the necessary stewarding and security staff for the fixture.

Meredith hasn’t necessarily been focused on that, but knows all about the values Parkinson instils in his sides.

“It’s a big game and it’s going to be a tough game away from home,” Meredith continued. “It’s getting pretty ruthless now because we could put them in a position that they might not come out of.

That’s just football.

“I don’t tend to concentrate on what’s going on with them in terms of off the

field, but I know they’ll fight for everything. It’s the same staff that was at Bradford. I know what they’re like and the way they galvanise their players.

“I played four years under Phil Parkinson. It’s similar to here, he’ll want them to be ruthless, to tackle, he’s very big on fitness and energy and giving everything you’ve got.

“They’re the type of values that Phil Parkinson and his staff admire. I look forward to it. They need something and so do we so it’s going to be exciting.”

Meredith hasn’t had an extended summer break for four seasons after two play-off campaigns with Bradford and then the World Cup with Australia last summer.

He admitted that can have an effect on form, but insisted he felt “a lot fresher” following his spell out of the side.

He is looking forward to some extra time off this summer, but first wants Millwall to “get the business done”.

“I didn’t have a break and then I had a bit of trouble with a reoccurring injury that I had to mend,” Meredith explained.

“So I have had this break and I’m feeling a lot fresher. I’m excited for the next eleven games and really raring to go.

“This will be my first break in a while so I’ll take advantage of it. I think I definitely need the break, it’s difficult without one when you’re then going straight into the next season.

“After about Christmas time you tend to be not as sharp as you should, and there are little niggly injuries.

“I’m looking forward to the break but first we need to get the business done.”

NEIL HARRIS was pleased with lots of Millwall’s play last Saturday – but the bottom line is all that matters with the season heading towards its conclusion.

The Lions gave a good account of themselves against league leaders Norwich, but the final score told its own brutal story.

As did other scores. Rotherham’s 3-2 win over Blackburn and Reading’s late 2-1 victory at Ipswich means Millwall are just a point above the drop zone.

It now looks like one from those three and Wigan – who the Lions play on the last day – for the third relegation spot.

Ipswich have looked doomed for some time and, twelve points off safety with eleven games left, surely it’s only a matter of time before their departure from the Championship is mathematically confirmed.

Millwall go to Bolton on Saturday and can practically take them out of the equation with a win, which would put them eleven points ahead of Phil Parkinson’s side.

Harris has found Parkinson’s teams stubborn opponents in recent seasons.

Last year’s 2-0 win at Bolton was only a second in seven for Harris against teams managed by Parkinson.

Wanderers are a mess off the field, yet Parkinson has managed to keep their spirits up, and even in their defeats they have battled fiercely.

"It's now about us taking the responsibility,” Harris said last weekend, “getting the results and not relying on other results to bail us out.”

Millwall have their fate in their own hands, and if the first two full seasons

of Harris’ time in charge are anything to go by then they have shown they have the mental strength to deliver.

Remember that in May 2016 the Lions needed to beat Gillingham on the last day to finish fourth and guarantee a home leg second in their play-off semi-final. They did it, with ten men, through Lee Gregory’s 98thminute penalty.

And unforgettably, a year later, Shaun Hutchinson headed home in the 85th minute for a 4-3 win at Bristol Rovers that snatched sixth place from Southend on the last day.

Still, Millwall will hope it doesn’t go so close this campaign. There is so much on the line.

Consider the players Millwall could lose if they go down. Centre-backs Hutchinson and Jake Cooper will surely be targeted by top Championship sides. If Rangers come back for Cooper it would be understandably difficult for him to resist.

And if a club like Middlesbrough renewed interest in Jed Wallace you couldn’t blame him if he wanted a move.

And, even if they stay up, Lee Gregory could also depart.

It would all feel very much like square one again for Millwall and Harris, after just two seasons in the second tier.

But let’s not be too defeatist yet, and to their credit Millwall have never looked that despite a run now of three consecutive Championship losses.

They matched Norwich for spells, with a starting line-up containing ten players who were part of the 2016-17 League One promotion campaign. The other, James Meredith, was recalled in

place of Murray Wallace, who is out for the rest of the season with knee and ankle ligament damage.

Millwall started well but Norwich took the lead in the sixteenth minute through Marco Stiepermann.

The hosts responded well to that setback, and were level when Steve Morison set up Shaun Williams two minutes before half-time. There are plenty who say Morison, well into his 36th year, should not be given another contract. The skipper could point to three goal involvements in three games, two of them direct assists, as a valid argument for extending his stay.

Millwall had got themselves into a good position, but then the Canaries exquisitely demonstrated their attacking quality, particularly for their third.

Daniel Farke’s side move the ball so quickly and with such clarity, a joy to watch if you’re not on the receiving end.

With eleven minutes left, Emi Buendia smacked a pass forward and Teemu Pukki’s first touch was marvellous, taking beyond Jake Cooper. There was an inevitability about the division’s top scorer running through on Jordan Archer, and the finish was as decisive as it gets. Archer had no chance.

Norwich had gone 2-1 up through Chrstoph Zimmermann, and now there was no way back for Millwall, though the home side never gave up.

The final scoreline was perhaps a bit harsh, but the difference, as Harris said later, was the finishing quality of the league leaders.

Millwall now go to Bolton for their most crucial game of the season – and one they cannot lose.

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris won’t be “sugar-coating” the perilous position his side are in – and he is confident his players can deliver when on the “big stage”.

Harris highlighted that his players have shown their “character” in “testing games” over the past four seasons, ahead of a clash at Bolton that could be hugely decisive in the relegation battle.

Millwall would move eleven points clear of second-last Bolton with a win on Saturday, but a defeat combined with wins for Reading, who play Wigan, and Rotherham at Sheffield United would put the Lions in the drop zone with ten games left.

Harris pointed to fixtures like Bristol Rovers away in 2016-17, when his side had to win on the final day to finish sixth, as reason to believe they have the fortitude to get results when the pressure is at its most intense. In that game Shaun Hutchinson scored with just five minutes left for a 4-3 victory, before Millwall defeated Scunthorpe in the play-off semi-finals and then Bradford at Wembley.

Millwall have also enjoyed cup success against Premier League sides in front of a full Den and the live television cameras, as well as big wins as they went so close to a top-six finish in 2017-18.

“At the end of last season we had a couple of six-pointers thinking about the play-offs. Fulham was probably one, Middlesbrough as well,” Harris said.

“This is the first one this season I’ve felt that. I knew the importance of Ipswich and Reading at Christmas.

“You usually look at six-pointers and they’re end-of-season games. Reading and Ipswich were six-pointers, really,

given where we were at the time. And we came through them with flying colours, in terms of our character and the results.

“Over the course of the last four seasons we’ve had some huge games, some testing games. Play-off games, Bristol Rovers – there was no more pressurised a situation than that.

“Let’s be honest, at the time we were a top-six side that should have been in the play-offs, budget-wise and the squad we

had put together.

“But we had to win to get in, and we did. We got to the play-off final, won it.

We won big games last year, won big games this year. We’ve had some great cup runs.

“So we can perform on the big stage. I know I’ve got that in my players.

“I’ve been saying to them this week it’s a massive game, there’s no point sugarcoating it – it’s huge.”

Harris feels his side can take

“At the time I thought we were good but after watching it back we were better than I thought we were. Watching it back you realise how good Norwich were and how many good young players they’ve got.

MILLWALL FACE what could be a defining game this Saturday.

Win and they would move eleven points clear of Bolton, a deficit that is hard the see Phil Parkinson’s side making up. That would then likely leave one team from four for the last relegation place, unless there is a side above the bottom six that collapses.

A defeat would create a completely different complexion. Not only would the gap be just four points, but there would also be the huge dent in confidence it would bring. A fourth consecutive defeat and momentum going the wrong way.

There is also a run of fixtures in April that looks daunting. The Lions don’t want to be going to the likes of Aston Villa and Sheffield United requiring wins to get them out of trouble.

Bolton are in deep trouble, on and off the pitch, but as they showed last weekend where they were holding Swansea goalless at the Liberty Stadium with ten minutes left before

conceding two late goals, they are still a stubborn opponent.

Parkinson has again assembled a side, despite financial constraints, that is big and physical and Millwall fans won’t need to be told about Mark Beevers’ threat at set-pieces.

Harris is boosted by the return of Ben Marshall after he couldn’t play against parent club Norwich last weekend.

One big decision is concerning who to play at left-back, with Murray Wallace out for the season. The obvious choice is James Meredith over Shane Ferguson for the former’s added physical presence in defence.

Harris could opt to play 4-4-1-1, or a variation of it, with Jed Wallace operating off Lee Gregory and Marshall and Ferguson in wide

midfield positions.

Or the Lions boss could decide to beef up midfield by playing three.

Ben Thompson’s excellent performance against the Canaries makes it hard to leave him out, while Ryan Leonard and Ryan Tunnicliffe are also options alongside Shaun Williams.

Steve Morison’s three assists in the

last three games also puts him in the frame, and Harris may feel he needs two up front against a big Bolton defence.

Goalkeeper Ben Amos is back in training after a broken finger but can’t play against the club he is set to return to in the summer.

Meanwhile, the Bolton squad returned to training on Tuesday a day after their training ground was closed due to a lack of food, drink and fuel.

About the only good news for Parkinson in another troubling week was Josh Magennis being passed fit for the game after he was stretchered off against Swansea.

IT SEEMS only a matter of time before Steve Morison signs a new Millwall deal – with Neil Harris confirming he will be on the playing books next season.

Morison’s current contract runs out at the end of this season but the striker is set to sign for another twelve months.

That would take the Lions skipper past his 36th birthday at the club, and an

eighth full season with Millwall including one loan spell.

Morison has made 188 appearances in all competitions for Millwall since joining for a third time in August 2015.

Morison started his first game since December against former club Norwich last weekend, assisting Shaun Williams for the Lions’ goal.

The centre-forward has been used differently this season, with eighteen of his 29 league appearances coming from the bench. He is an influential figure around the Millwall dressing room, commanding respect and being a trusted sounding board for Harris.

Mezza ready to step up

Morison is currently completing his final coaching badge, the Pro Licence, and has no intention of hanging up his boots.

“Moro has been excellent and it’s not just about what he does on the pitch, it’s off the pitch as well,” Harris told the News this week.

“Going into the Norwich game I’d not started Moro for a long time. He came on after ten minutes against Hull and he was outstanding, won his headers, linked the play really well, had a real impact on the team, was a handful for defenders.

“I could see that hunger in Moro, he

was ready to play again. Against Norwich, his old club where he gets a bit of stick, we needed his leadership and his decision-making, pressing from the front against the best football team in the division. He was really good.

“I’ve got him down for three assists in three games. I think he’s done well in that aspect.

“Moro will be here next year in a playing capacity because you need that leadership at the club. I’ve been really pleased with him and he’s got a huge part to play to the end of the season on and off the pitch, in the changing room.

“He’s really important to us.”

Millwall received good news concerning Wallace this week when it was confirmed that he would not need surgery on injuries to his knee and ankle.

But he is very unlikely to feature again this campaign, instead focussing on being fit for preseason training in the summer.

Harris has often over-stated injury situations, but Meredith could now get a chance to reclaim his place.

The Australian international defender started for the first time in the league since January 12 last weekend against Norwich, and was replaced late on as Harris moved Shaun Ferguson to left-back with his side chasing the game.

Meredith started all 46 Championship fixtures in his first season with Millwall, but has begun just 25 out of 35 this term.

He recently recovered from a calf problem.

Harris said: “James has been fit for a few weeks and keen to be involved and wanting to play.

“James, by his own admission, in the first half of the season didn’t set the world alight.

He wasn’t at the standard he was last year.

“But his character, his desire doesn’t change and I thought he did really well Saturday for 75 minutes against Norwich.”
