A “DISORDERLY exit” from the EU will be disruptive and destructive for traders at Borough Market according to a senior figure at the institution – leaving some businesses wiped out “almost overnight.”

In a blog post on the Market’s website, Christine Elliott, chair of the market’s trustees, raised fears that a no-deal Brexit could disrupt food supply chains criss-crossing the continent which traders rely on.

Some products imported – such as French cheese, Spanish ham and Greek olive oil – were in small batches and perishable, meaning

they could not be stockpiled to ensure supply, she warned.

She said: “As a result, there is the very real prospect of businesses that have been built over many years, with great love and expertise, being destroyed almost overnight if their needs aren’t taken into account. That would be a tragedy.”

However, she added that the status quo is “problematic” for food traders, as it relies too much on imports and mass production of food, “whose apparent cheapness hides the public cost of low pay, ill health and environmental damage.”

Hero officer from London Bridge terror attacks to support police with PTSD

A HERO copper who was awarded a bravery medal for his actions during the London Bridge terror attack is running a marathon to support officers with post-traumatic stress disorder.

British Transport Police officer Leon McCleod was awarded a Queen’s Gallantry medal for his heroism, running after the attackers and giving first-aid to the injured victims.

He also helped to carry people to safety despite the great danger to himself. The attack claimed the lives of eight innocent people.

Now he is hoping to raise £10,000 by running the London Marathon for PTSD999 – the only UK organisation that provides trauma response training for emergency service personnel.

Mr McCleod said: “On Saturday 3rd June 2017 my life and career changed in a way I could never have prepared for.

“While on a foot patrol with my colleague, we stepped into a situation that I can hardly find the right words to explain, as the atrocities of the London Bridge and Borough Market attack began to unfold.

“Although I didn’t sustain the physical injuries or worse that so many others unfortunately did, the events have no doubt left their mark.”

He added that events such as the London Bridge terror attack, Grenfell and Manchester arena bombing served to highlight the traumatic events that heroic emergency services workers face on a daily basis.

“There’s only so much a person can take, and it seems that only recently attention has really been paid to mental health and wellbeing,” he said.

A LEGAL loophole which saw businesses affected by the London Bridge and Borough market terror attack miss out on vital compensation has been closed.

The days after the June 2017 terror attack, which claimed the lives of eight people, saw businesses suffer severe losses as they were cordoned off during police investigations.

However, a loophole meant around 150 businesses were ineligible for pay-outs from a Government-backed insurance scheme because they had not been physically damaged by a bomb.

Traders were estimated to have lost around £2 million during the closure.

Now, following a law change on Tuesday, February 12, pay-outs will now also cover the damage caused to businesses from forcible closure, not just from physical damage during a terror attack.

The move comes following a campaign by Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, Neil Coyle, whose constituency covers Borough Market.

He said: “Since our community came under a vicious and cowardly attack at London Bridge and Borough Market, I have been campaigning for a law change to better protect businesses affected by such atrocities.

“In June 2017 eight innocent people were murdered, but the traders in Borough Market and surrounding businesses lost around £2 million due to the closure of the area for the full police investigation.

“Firms lost stock, orders, contracts and even employees as a result and, due to a loophole in terror insurance, they were not compensated. I sought to close that loophole and I am glad the law has now been changed.”

A CHILD model who had lifesaving surgery at the Evelina London Children’s hospital is now strutting along the catwalk at New York and London fashion weeks.

Amy Lee, 8, was only four months old when she fell seriously ill on Christmas Day. She was rushed to the Evelina, part of the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust, and spent over a week on life-support in the paediatric intensive care unit.

Doctors diagnosed little Amy with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a hole between her aorta and pulmonary artery which causes too much blood to be delivered to the lungs.

If untreated, it can cause permanent heart and lung damage and become life-threatening.

Doting mum Jennie, a sales rep, said: “It was the worst time of my life. I was beside myself with worry and seeing her tiny body hooked up to the machines was dreadful.

“The nurses on the unit were absolutely brilliant and the doctors helped to put me at ease by explaining what they could see on the scans and how they were going to treat her.”

Aged just seven months old, Amy had keyhole surgery to close the hole.

“Evelina London was amazing, without them we might not have her.

Everyone from the cleaning staff and the receptionist to the clinical team were just so friendly and lovely,” said Jennie, who lives with Amy in East Grinstead, Sussex.

Now Amy, who has previously starred in ads for Lidl and Sainsbury’s, has made her debut at New York Fashion Week and strutted the catwalk at London fashion week on Sunday, February 17.

She modelled clothes for the children’s tailor and fashion designer Krissie Colton and her brand ME Clothing.

“I’m was very very very very excited because it’s my favourite thing to do.

My friend went to watch me in New York and I have friends who do it with me in London,” Amy said.

Mum Jennie added: “When Amy’s modelling she’s in her element and has a beaming smile on her face, I am so

proud of her.

“To look at Amy you would never know the struggles she’s been through.

She has autism and a cataract in her left eye but she hasn’t let anything stop her from doing what she loves.”

Dr Aaron Bell, a consultant paediatric cardiologist at the hospital, said: “It’s wonderful to see how well Amy is doing and I wish her luck in her modelling career.

“She is a great example of how our life-saving treatment is helping children to go on and live a healthy life.”

FORTY-FOUR locations in Southwark failed air quality targets in 2017 according to research published on Wednesday – with two being among the top ten most polluted in London.

The data audit, conducted by environmental group Friends of the Earth, mapped locations which did not meet the UK air quality target of 40ug/m3 for nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant linked to lung problems.

Twenty spots in Southwark recorded pollution levels over 60ug/m3. Two – the area surrounding Haddon Hall on Tower Bridge Road, and Peckham High Street – recorded levels more than double the limit, a whopping 90.79ug/m3 and 87.51ug/m3 respectively.

This means both sites, which are on TfL-managed roads, are among the top ten most polluted locations in London, say campaigners.

Catriona Currie, a campaigner with the group, said: “It’s unforgivable to see so many locations across London over air quality limits, leaving millions of us breathing dangerously polluted air.

“There are however signs of hope for air quality in the city, with Sadiq Khan making some good progress with the Ultra Low Emission Zone.”

Other locations which failed air quality targets even include areas surrounding the borough’s schools.

The Notre Dame Girls’ School in Elephant and Castle; Globe Academy School also in Elephant and Castle; St James' CoE Primary School in Bermondsey; and Camberwell’s Oliver Goldsmith Primary School were among those listed in areas breaking clean air limits.

Friends of the Earth called for the Mayor’s ultra-low emissions zone

(ULEZ) scheme, due to be introduced in April, to be extended to cover the whole of Greater London.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for Environment, Transport Management and Air Quality, said it would support the idea of a ULEZ extension to cover the whole of Southwark and Greater London.

However he added that there was “concern” that “where the border ends could become a new pollution hotspot – it’s important that we continue to work with TfL and with neighbouring boroughs on the issue of pollution.”

“Tackling air pollution is one of the council’s priorities as it is something that concerns residents in relation to their long-term health,” said Cllr Livingstone, pointing to a crackdown on engine idling.

The council was aware of the locations, he added, and has met TfL this week to discuss traffic calming measures on Peckham High Street and cycling routes on Tower Bridge Road.

Cllr Graham Neale, the environment spokesperson for the opposition Liberal Democrats, said the report showed “we need to work harder to keep our air clean for everyone, London's boroughs need to work together to stop this invisible killer.”

He called for cycle hire schemes to be extended beyond Elephant and Castle to Peckham and Rotherhithe - and also said the council should reconsider vehicle leases for council staff. “[It] looks like a case of saying one thing, and doing another - a kind of 'eco double speak,’” he said.

The findings come after Mayor Sadiq Khan sounded a ‘high’ pollution alert across London on Tuesday.

“Poorly dispersed local emissions” were attributed to the alert by the Mayor’s office, only the tenth time it has been used since Mr Khan took over as Mayor.

The alert was “evidence of the scale of London’s air quality crisis” said a Mayoral spokesperson.

Pollution up at Rotherhithe Tunnel AIR POLLUTION has slightly increased in the Rotherhithe Tunnel, the latest monthly stats reveal.

Last month the News reported that levels of toxic gases coming from the route had dramatically dropped following a residents’ campaign.

An apartment block on Rotherhithe Street is located just eight metres from one of the Tunnel’s shafts – meaning high levels of toxic fumes were being spewed into resident’s homes.

In January, levels of harmful Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) were recorded at an average of 47.9µg/m3 – higher than December’s 43.4µg/m3.

The UK air quality target is 40µg/m3.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, Neil Coyle, who secured the

figures from TfL, said: “I am glad that TfL are taking action to improve air quality in Rotherhithe in response to local people's concerns and the News’ coverage.

“The extra monitoring shows a slight increase in NO2 pollution in January sadly, but TfL assure me that this was before the activation of new cameras which will now fine some vehicles using the tunnel to deter their use.”

Cameras installed by TfL this month will fine drivers up to £130 which do not comply with a ban on goods vehicles weighing over two tonnes or cars higher than two metres using the tunnel.

The agency is also planning on refurbishing the Tunnel’s ventilation system within the next five years.

NEW FUNDING to help businesses while Rye Lane is closed to traffic was announced

by Southwark Council this week.

Traders had been left anxious that thirteen months’ of major gas repairs from January 2019 to early next year could harm or even see off their shops and stalls.

On Tuesday, Southwark Council announced £30,000 of funding from its ‘high street challenge’ project, aimed at helping local shopping districts thrive, will be allocated to Rye Lane thanks to a cash injection from gas company SGN. The funding will pay for a year-long programme of events to help encourage shoppers into the area, with spending decided by a steering group of Peckham businesses and organisations led by drama school Mountview.

Councillor Kieron Williams, cabinet member for jobs, skills and innovation, said: “Rye Lane is one of London’s most vibrant and exciting high streets thanks to its wealth of small and independent businesses.

“They’re the life blood of the town centre so it’s vital they’re supported through this disruption.

“That’s why we’ve put in place this extra support from the council. I’m very pleased SGN have agreed to fund it too. We’ll be keeping a very close eye on how things are going.

Those most at risk of losing out during engineering work are traders, including independent shopkeepers, who say they are reliant on people traveling to the area by bus or car for much of their business.

Although some have seen an increase in shoppers enjoying the area with less traffic, others are predicting a downturn.

Business owners had been particularly aghast to learn that although SGN runs a compensation scheme to help traders left out of pocket, claims could only be made once work had been completed.

However, SGN has since backtracked and said affected businesses will be able to submit quarterly claims, after intervention by Southwark Council.

Labour councillor Peter Babudu welcomed their decision and said he and his colleagues would keep working with Southwark Council to make sure visitors know Rye Lane is still open to shoppers, and make sure traders are securing timely compensation payments.

SGN’s general manager, Drew Reynolds, has said the company wanted to make a ‘lasting positive impact’ on Rye Lane.

"Having engaged with the local community, traders and council, we're totally committed to doing all we can to ensure it's business as usual and people continue to visit Rye Lane during our work,” he said.

“We're pleased to be involved and working with the community steering group in creating a programme of exciting events over the coming months."

PLANS FOR a new museum and visitor centre for the Golden Hinde – a replica of Sir Frances Drake’s famous ship – have been unveiled.

The proposals, which are due to be submitted for planning permission later this year, would see the ship refurbished and new ticket halls and education spaces for the tourist attraction.

The scheme will be split over two levels, with the lower ground level featuring a visitor centre with a covered walkway to viewing galleries and office

space.

Architecture firm, SPPARC, which published the design, said they aimed to preserve and interpret the history of the Golden Hinde to provide “an exceptional learning experience on the history of the ship and Sir Frances Drake.”

Trevor Morriss, Principal at SPPARC, said: “The brief for the new Golden Hinde visitor centre called for a unique design which learnt from the skilled craftsmanship and innovative nautical engineering of this iconic ship.

“The concept was derived through the desire to reflect this history of The

A MAN was jailed for more than 14 months earlier this month after attacking a bystander ‘unprovoked’ on London Bridge and then racially abusing the arresting police officer.

Refurbishment is currently being carried out on the Bankside attraction, with 56 tonnes of sustainably sourced oak from the New Forest and Sussex to return the galleon to its former glory.

Angus Francis Coleman, Director of Golden Hinde Ltd, said she was “most impressed by the way the building both complements the ship and ties in with the modern surrounding architecture.

“This visitor centre will allow us to deliver on a much grander scale and will turn The Golden Hinde into a major cultural destination.”

Timothy Sherritt (pictured), 38, of Compton Place, Erith, was handed a 58week prison sentence after pleading guilty to aggravated harassment and actual bodily harm at the Old Bailey on Wednesday February 13.

The court heard how Sherritt approached his victim, who was waiting at a London Bridge bus stop on Sunday September 16 with his partner, before shoving him to the ground, kicking and punching him.

The victim had attempted to make space between him and his partner and Sherritt, who had been threatening and aggressive to them in the moments prior to the attack shortly after 1am, police said.

Sherritt then fled the scene, leaving the man bleeding from the head, nose and mouth. His injuries were not permanent.

Police later arrested Sherritt on Tooley Street, where he “racially abused them

and spat in their general direction.”

The court heard that he later said he couldn’t remember the two incidents, as he had drunk four bottles of wine and a number of beers earlier in the evening.

Detective Inspector Mark Forster, of the City of London Police, said: “Sherritt is a violent and nasty individual who, when fuelled with alcohol, unleashed a vicious physical attack on an innocent member of the public as well as a verbal attack on a police officer.

“The City of London Police does not tolerate violence or racially aggravated offences of any kind.

“I would like to commend the police officer who arrested Sherritt for continuing to do such a professional job in the face of adversity and the detectives in the City of London Police who were able to present an indisputable case against Sherritt to the court which ensured justice was done.”

A REPORT into the impact of development at Canada Water on local transport routes has been delayed by over six months.

The study, jointly commissioned by Southwark Council and TfL in February 2017, aims to model “transport interventions” needed at Canada Water by 2031 if the area is developed.

Transport for London planners had expected the recommendations to be published in summer, after being completed by July last year.

Concern has been raised about the impact on local transport routes from development including the Canada Water Masterplan and the Convoys Wharf plans in the heart of nearby Deptford.

Surrey Docks ward councillor, Nick Johnson, said: “I’m surprised they are delaying the report. I hope it’s published in good time for the planning committee meeting which will be in April at the earliest.

“My worry is that by the time everyone realises that the transport infrastructure is not there, it will be too late to do anything about it.”

Up to the 3,000 homes will be provided by the British Land development Cllr Johnson Situ, cabinet member for growth, development and planning, said the council had been working closely on the study with TfL “to establish where the challenges and opportunities are at Canada Water.”

He said: “All the technical work on the report has now been completed. The report is taking a little longer to analyse and write up than we had hoped, but this is being done and we expect the final report to be available by the end of March.

“Together with TFL we are already working to improve transport in the area and are hugely excited by the imminent consultation on the most recent proposals for a bridge connecting Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf.”

TfL has said a bridge is its preferred option for the river crossing. Work is ongoing for the design before further public consultation, but a ferries option has not been ruled out.

Crossrail – which is currently delayed – and a proposed Bakerloo Line extension is also expected to relieve overcrowded transport in the Canada Water area.

GREENPEACE VOLUNTEERS handed back ‘armfuls’ of unwanted plastic packaging to Tesco in Old Kent Road last Saturday in protest at the amount of single-use packaging used by the supermarket.

Volunteers from Southwark returned 80 pieces of single-use plastic packaging to the store that had been collected by customers, formed of 20 plastic trays from vegetables, 20 pieces of shrinkwrap, and 40 wrappings from fruit.

One volunteer, JC, said: "Over the last month, we spoke to hundreds of Tesco customers outside the superstore on the Old Kent Road.

“We found that many customers were avoiding fruits and vegetables wrapped in plastic.

“However, many others couldn't avoid it and were very upset about the amount of pointless plastic Tesco forces them to buy.

“Today we returned a trolley full of plastic as a symbol of how much pointless plastic is generated in a few hours by Tesco and other supermarkets.

“Whilst there are a lot of products that are wrapped in unnecessary plastic we

A SIX-YEAR-OLD Dulwich Hamlet fan who was left crying tears of ‘pure sadness’ after being turned away from a sold-out game in December was delighted to run out on pitch as the team’s mascot this month.

Six-year-old Eli, from Grove Park in Camberwell, was left inconsolable after missing out on watching Hamlet play Slough Town on December after a record turnout.

Eli’s Dad, James Lynch, said he tried his best to prepare Eli that they may not make it in, but as the realisation dawned on his son that tickets were running out fast, the youngster was left devastated.

“They were quiet tears of pure sadness and disappointment,” James told the News, “the worst kind!”

Although the family were turned away at the gates, the kind-hearted club decided to find a way to put a smile back on Eli’s face.

“Eli and I were having a conversation about how you deal with knock-backs,” remembers James. “At which point someone from the club came over and asked if Eli would like to lead the team out in future.”

had also arranged for his school to have free tickets as part of its community programme, he got to proudly walk out on pitch with his friends from Lyndhurst Primary watching Hamlet win 2 to 1.

"I had a great time,” Eli said afterwards: “I liked talking to the captain and felt like a celebrity when I ran onto the pitch."

“He was already getting into the club and how he is a super-fan,” his Dad told the News. “The ethos of the club is about welcoming, and that comes through so

strongly with all that they do,” he added.

James says the family-friendly atmosphere has made all the difference to the whole family, including Mum Jess and three-year-old Stella, but especially to Eli’s elder brother Sam, aged nine, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair.

“It can be a challenge to get Sam involved in things, but at Champion Hill we couldn’t wish for a more supportive environment,” said James.

The environmental charity is lobbying supermarkets and food shops across the UK to ditch single use plastics.

More than 800,000 people - 283 of them from Southwark - have signed a petition in favour of the move.

Tesco says 83 per cent of its own-brand packaging now meets the ‘widely recycled’ criteria in its stores, and as part of the industry coalition ‘Plastics Pact’ it has committed to eliminate single-use packaging - but not until 2025.

Increasingly, campaigners are urging retailers to cut down on plastic full stop, even if it can be recycled, as scientists warn we are facing an environmental crisis.

The United Nations has warned that only nine per cent of plastic waste produced has ever been recycled, with the rest incinerated or accumulating in landfills, dumps, or the natural environment.

If our current rate of plastic consumption continues, by 2050 our oceans could contain more plastic than fish.

YELLOW VEST PROTEST CHARGE A MAN from Kennington has been charged with assault and affray after police officers were caught up a ‘yellow vest’ protest.

The Met says ‘a number’ of officers were assaulted during the demonstration on Saturday, February 16.

Six people have now been charged over the alleged assaults, including fiftysix-year-old Robert Walker, from

Hillington Street in SE17.

He was charged the following day with three counts of assault on an emergency worker and affray.

Five other people have also been charged by police, including one from north London.

All are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, March 19.

Thug gets 20 years for horrifying attack BERMONDSEY

A JEALOUS Bermondsey thug who subjected his partner to horrific domestic abuse, stabbing, strangling and sexually assaulting her, has been jailed for twenty years.

Dennis Tanner (pictured), 38, of Marden Square, had been found guilty of six counts of wounding with intent, one count of false imprisonment, four counts of threats to kill and one count of sexual assault by penetration following a trial at

Woolwich Crown Court.

Last Friday, February 22, he was handed a twenty year jail sentence for his vile crimes.

The court heard how Tanner returned to a Bexley address after a night out on Monday, August 6 2018 and demanded his partner hand over her phone, believing her to be having an affair.

Despite her handing over the phone, Tanner became angry and began attacking her – biting her in the face, punching her in the head and stubbing out a cigarette on her body.

He later stabbed her in the shoulder and leg, strangled her, poured a bottle of bleach over her and sexually assaulted her, the court heard.

The attack is believed to have lasted more than four hours. When Tanner fell asleep, the victim managed to leave the property, where she was found by a neighbour. The neighbour took the victim to hospital, where she remained “for a number of days,” said police.

The victim later reported the attack and Tanner was arrested on Saturday August 11.

Detective Sergeant Darren James, from the Met's South East Command Unit, said: "Tanner's jealousy was the catalyst for an appalling attack and he will now spend a considerable period of time behind bars. It is important to recognise the incredible bravery of the victim in this case, whose evidence was vital in securing this prosecution.

"We also hope this result serves as a reminder that we will bring perpetrators of domestic violence before the courts and encourages other people in violent relationships to come forward to police."

Homeless families stage protest as some say their children ‘face a four-hour school run each day’

HOMELESS FAMILIES in temporary housing forced to travel up to four hours a day on the school run staged a protest at the council’s Tooley Street offices last week.

Fifty-odd members of activist group Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth (HASL) turned out to support four homeless families at the demonstration in the council’s lobby on Thursday, February 21.

Parents say they are struggling with long journeys to and from school while living in temporary accommodation outside their home borough.

All four families have GCSE-age children. Their situation is all the more urgent as exam season approaches and they face added stress trying to revise.

Ruby, who lives in Purley with her four children, aged sixteen, ten, eight and two, says it takes the family two hours each way to travel to school in Camberwell.

“My two year old daughter has to come with us and she cries on the bus journeys,” she explains, saying her son’s hair is falling out with stress.

Ruby is one of the estimated 33,000 families nationwide who are holding down jobs, but still have nowhere permanent to live.

According to housing charity Shelter, more than half (55 per cent) of families in temporary accommodation are in work, showing the true scale of the housing crisis.

But as Ruby’s school run is so long, she has been forced to cut down her working hours, making the family’s finances all the more precarious.

long her two daughters are frequently late.

As she cannot afford the train they make the journey on multiple buses, with her children often having to get off to go to the toilet on their way.

The only housing offer she has received was in Birmingham, in the West Midlands, despite the fact that she is the main carer for her elderly parents who live in Southwark.

“My mum has high blood pressure and mild dementia. My dad cannot walk too much as he has problems on his knees,” she says.

“They have been in trouble many times because my mum at middle of the night feels bad and needs to go to hospital, and they have to wait for me for at least one hour.”

HASL spokesperson Elizabeth Wyatt believes these cases prove that Southwark Council is failing on its promise to prioritise families with examage children for housing near school.

She argued many families could be homed in empty flats in the Aylesbury Estate, rather than being moved further outside London.

“This cannot continue,” she told the News, “Southwark council must house families in their home borough such as on the empty homes on the Aylesbury Estate. We need three, four, five bedroom council homes now.

“We know this is an issue that homeless families across London are facing and we are sure that our demands will resonate with other families.”

Southwark councillor Stephanie Cryan, the cabinet member for housing management and modernisation, contradicted the families’ claims they spent two hours or more travelling to school each day.

She claimed that each had commutes ‘under one hour’s travel’, and argued most temporary accommodation offered outside Southwark was in neighbouring boroughs.

“I wouldn’t want to see any child have their exams disrupted due to their housing situation and we are already looking to see if there’s anything more we can do to help these specific individuals,” she told the paper this week.

“We have mapped their journey times to the borough and all are under one hour’s travel time from the neighbouring boroughs they are currently living in.

“We agree that there is a chronic shortage of affordable housing across London, particularly as more homes are sold due to right-to-buy and with exponential increases in the cost of housing in the private sector, which is why the council is doing all that it can to build and secure new council housing.

“Temporary accommodation in this central London borough is indeed in extremely short supply and, in line with current policy, we always seek to do everything we can to house families near their relatives, schools and networks that they need – but this isn’t always

possible.”

The costs of finding temporary accommodation has spiralled to £25.5 million a year for Southwark Council, as more people find themselves unable to keep up with private rents or evicted by private landlords, all compounded by a chronic shortage of council homes.

As the News reported in January, Southwark Council is even stuck spending two million pounds a year renting back former council homes, sold off under right-to-buy, to use as temporary accommodation.

Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth believes empty flats on the Aylesbury can offer much-needed family-sized accommodation closer home.

However, longstanding heating and hot water outages on the estate may raise question marks over its suitability for any such accommodation proposals.

COUNCIL FACES £8 MILLION CUTS DESPITE ‘END OF AUSTERITY’ EXCLUSIVE

SWINGEING GOVERNMENT cuts are leaving Southwark Council ever more reliant on income-generating activities to fund basic services, from special needs education to caring for the elderly, this year’s budget reveals.

Despite the Conservatives’ claim that the end of austerity is in sight, budget papers published this month show Southwark Council lost £8.6 million of funding from central government for next financial year, and has to fill an overall shortfall of nearly £20 million to balance its books.

Plans to close the gap rely on making ‘efficiency savings’ of nearly £14 million, and collecting nearly £5 million from ‘fees and charges’; like controlled parking zones, or CPZs. But there is still £3.2 million left to find.

Back in the 2010-11, eighty per cent of the council’s income came directly from the then-coalition government, with just 20 per cent of council income collected locally.

As austerity bites further, that proportion has skewed to the extent that now more than half the council’s income comes from local sources.

Speaking exclusively to the News, Councillor Victoria Mills (pictured), whose portfolio oversees the finance, performance and Brexit, denied the Council was pursuing a policy of actively creeping more CPZs into Southwark to raise much-needed cash.

She said consultations only occurred when there was resident demand, but could not promise this would stay the case in future.

Southwark’s buoyant economy has, to some extent, cushioned the impact of a decade of cuts. But the council is still grappling with austerity-led policies, economic uncertainty, and rising inflation.

As the News reported last month, Southwark is raising council tax by 2.99 per cent – council tax had been frozen since 2009 - and has set up a £2 million Brexit fund as part of its dealor-no-deal scenario planning.

One of the biggest pressures is the seemingly disastrous move to Universal Credit as the latest figures show 7,365 people in Southwark have now moved onto the new system, a number expected to soon double.

Already, they have racked up £4.7 million in rent arrears – cash now missing from the council’s housing budget.

By the end of the 2018-19 financial year, the council is expected to have

accumulated an £11 million deficit in its education spend, as government funding fails to cover the costs ranging from needing specialist schools, facilities and support for children with special educational or other needs.

The Liberal Democrat opposition says more savings can be found, arguing cutting the council’s spend on ‘propaganda’ and press officers would save £320,000, but Cllr Mills defended

the ‘small and nimble team’, arguing “the Lib Dems are always asking us to improve consultation and the work of the press team is a really important part of talking to our local residents.”

She also said the property licensing scheme the Lib Dems believe could net the Council an extra £415,000 is backed by the Council, but is unlikely to get government approval before the financial year is out.

The main points of the budget

In 2019-20, the Council has £8 million of cuts to its government funding, but has to find an extra £25.9 million to cope with rising costs and demand for its services.

Adult social care has to save £5 million, but £4.7 million of funding is committed to make sure homecare, and bed-based care packages are protected Children’s services will get £2.2 net increase in funding, but have to make £300,000 savings in education At the end of March 2019 the dedicated schools grant deficit is expected to hit £11 million The environment and leisure department will save £340,000 by ‘rationalising our litter picking schedules to focus effort where it is most needed’.

Eco-friendly street lights will save £0.1m.

Agreed CPZs will bring in £0.5 million, and a further £0.7 million could be netted by zones yet to be formally approved.

The Council expects a £4.7 million overspend finding temporary accommodation for those in need, with costs only expected to rise with the next stages of Aylesbury estate demolition.

Council staff are in line for a two per cent pay award – adding an extra £4.5 million to the annual pay bill.

Free swimming and theatre trips for children, reopening the Blue youth centre, and a community toilet scheme are all earmarked in the budget.

‘Negligent landlord’ fined over £20k

A ‘NEGLIGENT’ Camberwell landlord has been ordered to pay costs of more than £20,000 after failing to apply for a licence.

ALMOST 19,000 people have signed a petition urging the Southwark Playhouse to cancel one of its plays over its controversial portrayal of an autistic boy.

All in a Row, touted as a “startlingly honest and new play”, revolves around a family and an autistic, nonverbal 11-year-old boy.

The character, Laurence, is played by a puppet, while all the other nonautistic characters are played by human actors, causing a backlash among some autistic people.

One, named as Frances D, who started a petition on the website Care2 urging the “regressive” play to be cancelled, said: “My life experiences and daily needs are very different.

“But as one of many experienced artists, advocates, allies and autistic folk, I am clear that this play is a regressive, dangerous portrayal of autism and of a particularly vulnerable minority within our community.”

The National Autistic Society – which was consulted by the play’s writer, Alex Oates – has also said that it cannot support the play in its current form over the puppet.

However, while recognising the controversy, the Playhouse’s artistic director, Chris Smyrnios said the venue supported the writer’s decision to use a mannequin to portray Laurence’s character.

“The writer thought it was essential that the character of Laurence, the child in the play, was represented in the piece but felt it inappropriate for the creative team to cast a child, autistic or not, in the role,” said Mr Smyrnios in a statement.

“This was in the interest of child

protection: the themes and some dialogue in the play are of an adult nature; also there was a desire to honestly depict the challenges of caring for someone with Laurence’s particular behaviour and needs, which meant portraying a certain physicality that would be unsafe for a child performer.”

He encouraged viewers to see the play for themselves to have a “constructive discussion” around its representation of disability.

Others have reacted positively to the work on social media. "Well All in a Row was accurate, direct, raw and truthful. An honour to watch," said viewer.

"Working with autistic children I’ve imagined what life at home for parents can be like. I utterly applaud Alex Oates and the whole team for allowing us to not pity but celebrate autism.”

Jane Harris, the National Autistic Society’s director of external affairs, said the production company behind All in a Row had approached the charity for feedback on the play’s portrayal of autism.

“We are pleased the production company made two changes in response, one for accuracy and another around representation,” she said.

“However, while recognising some of the play’s strengths, we decided we could not support the play overall due to its portrayal of autism, particularly the use of a puppet to depict only the autistic character and none of the others.”

The petition comes after a protest by activists outside of the Southwark Playhouse on Newington Causeway last week over the puppet.

The play, which stars EastEnders actor Charlie Brooks as Laurence’s mother Tamora, runs from Feburary 14 to March 9th.

Omo Ayoade, aged 45, from Chipstead Avenue in Thornton Heath, appeared in Camberwell Magistrates’ Court on February 14 after it emerged he had not applied for a licence for his three properties on Camberwell Church Street, and complaints from his tenants.

Residents had told Southwark Council in November 2017 about bed-bugs in one of his flats, and a collapsed ceiling that still hasn’t been fixed since it fell in after a leak last July.

After a council visit Ayoade was ordered to fix the ceiling but, eight months later, he has failed to do so, leaving the council saying it will probably have to fix it and bill Ayoade for the work.

landlord licence, he also had ignored their letters.

This is not the first time the council has taken action against Ayoade. In 2013, he was told to pay costs and fines totalling £1,938 over failing to comply with an improvement notice after a various problems with his homes came to light.

Cllr Victoria Mills, cabinet member for finance, performance and Brexit said: “We take the safety of tenants in

private rented properties here in Southwark extremely seriously and our landlord licensing scheme is one of a number of initiatives that the council has introduced, to protect tenants.

“This is a great result, and I hope that it will encourage any landlords in Southwark who still don’t have one of our licences, to apply immediately.”

Southwark Council introduced its landlord licensing scheme in January 2016 to tackle the scourge of rogue landlords.

Every licenced property is checked out for fire safety, overcrowding and repair issues, and the landlord or managing agent has to carry out regular safety checks and submit certificates for gas and electrical safety.

The council wants to bring in a gold standard for landlords to identify good ones, support inexperienced ones and challenge those who fail to improve.

A BERMONDSEY boozer said to have inspired the iconic Queen Vic in EastEnders is set to close temporarily as the brewery have brought back the lease in-house and could change it into a trendy pub.

The Queen Victoria, on Southwark Park Road, had its final night of trading under its current publican on Wednesday, and was due to hand over the keys to the brewery on Friday.

Ei Publican Partnerships will close the pub to refurbish it, the News understands.

The pub’s long-term landlord, Julie O’Sullivan, 58, told the paper that she thought the owners brought the lease back in-house to avoid forthcoming legislation that would allow publicans to buy their own beers.

The publican, who had been running the pub since 1997, said: “It’s definitely the end of an era. I feel gutted for my customers because I did try and fight it.

“It’s a real community pub. We did things like taking old folk down to Southend on a double-decker bus, we bought children Easter eggs every year, we did Christmas dinners every year.”

He said: “We are in ongoing dialogue with the current publican in regards to their expiring lease at The Queen Victoria.

“We would like to reassure customers that we are committed to ensuring that this site remains an attractive and thriving pub at the heart of the local community.”

The Bermondsey boozer is said to

have been the inspiration behind the Queen Vic on Albert Square and has seen many of its cast pop in for a pint over the years.

“Before Eastenders went on TV, the original cast used the pub as a dummy run,” said Julie, who moved from Essex to run the popular local. “Then the Eastenders bar was called the Queen Vic and it looks like mine on the outside.

A 14-year-old and two 15-yearolds arrested for SE1 stabbing

A TEENAGER who was found stabbed in Bermondsey’s Grange Road late on Saturday night is not suffering life-threatening injuries, police said on Monday afternoon.

The seventeen-year-old had previously been assessed as being “in a critical condition.”

Three boys – two aged fifteen and one aged fourteen – have been arrested on suspicion of GBH in connection with the stabbing.

The fourteen-year-old was being treated for a non-life-threatening “stab injury” said police. The other two were in custody in a south London police station.

Police were originally called to Grange Road, near the junction with Alscot Road, at 11.15pm on Saturday night, finding the boy, 17, with “stab injuries.”

He was rushed to hospital by the emergency services where he remained on Monday.

Detectives from the South Area Command Unit CID are investigating and ask anyone with information about the stabbing to contact them on 101.

Stand-up scoops Leicester Mercury comedy prize

A ROTHERHITHE-BORN standup comedian has won one of the top prizes in the business, putting him in the company of household names such as Romesh Ranganathan, Josh Widdicombe and Johnny Vegas.

Daniel Sofoluke, 32, who grew up on the Osprey Estate, triumphed over seven competitors to scoop the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year prize on Saturday, February 23.

The comedian, who grew up on the Osprey Estate before moving to Manchester five years ago, said the venue erupted in “sheer pandemonium” when his name was announced as the winner of the coveted prize.

“I feel shocked and honoured,” he said.

“Winning the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year and joining the ranks of previous winners is a dream come true.”

The comedian uses his stand-up to both talk about anecdotes in his own life while analysing topical and sometimes contentious issues.

“Because I talk about issues [in my set], there’s certain places that would not go down well. But the way you deliver it makes it go down well,” he said.

“For example when I was up north I had a guy come up to me, he was asking where I was from, that I should go back to Africa and that white people should take over Africa because they’ll make

better use of it.

“Because I’m a black comedian I do have a black perspective. Usually I start with anecdotes up top and then issues towards the end, because you don’t just go up to people and start talking about issues.”

Unlike other awards, the eight comedians shortlisted were chosen by comedy promoters across the country before performing a seven-minute set at the Leicester Comedy Festival in front of a judging panel.

Daniel was performing against two friends who also made the shortlist, adding extra pressure onto the billing.

“I was just trying to have fun with the audience, so I just went out there and relaxed,” he told the News.

“They announced my name [as the winner] and it was pandemonium.

“Out of all of the comedy competitions, this is the one to win.”

Despite claiming the prize, his friends are “happy for him”, he said.

“If they had won, I’d have said ‘that’s terrible but congratulations’”, he jokes.

Now post-celebrations - Daniel doesn’t drink much, but says “I drank a lot of orange juice!” – calls have come flooding in for the talented stand-up.

“I’ve had a couple of people call me, so I’ve just got to use it as best I can!”

This year’s judges for the award were George Oliver (Editor, Leicester Mercury), Charlotte Lang (Glastonbury Festival), Andy Leitch (Off The Kerb Productions), Ian Walker (UNION Jack Radio) and comedy promoter, Rob Riley.

A FREE course for aspiring teenage musicians is back in Borough for the third year in a row.

All About the Band is aimed at artists aged thirteen to nineteen who want to play their own music, join a band and perform live.

The collaboration between the London College of Creative Media and Southwark Music Hub links up young musicians with

experts who help them hone their practical skills, and build network in the industry.

Those taking part will also have the opportunity to use a state-of-the-art recording studio and perform live at Music Box to put their newfound confidence into action.

Whilst these can be London-wide, I often use this as a way of highlighting local issues and concerns.

Across Southwark serious violent crime, burglary and antisocial behaviour remain a top concern for residents. I receive so many emails from residents about this as well as regular updates from the Borough Commander. I am aware of how it is impacting Southwark residents’ wellbeing and communities.

The latest Office for National Statistic (ONS) figures show that violence and knife crime is now slowing down in London.

However, there is still a lot more to be done to crack down on crime

This week at City Hall, the Mayor presented the Final Draft Consolidated Budget for 2019/20.

Brigade. Funding that is desperately needed.

BAD NEWS for councillors hoping to sneak a can of coke at the council’s Tooley Street offices during its much-publicised ‘Fizz Free February’ campaign.

The vending machines in the building serving fizzy pop and chocolate has been empty for well over three months. “Is this an extreme public health measure to get us all healthy?” asks one sugar-deprived councillor.

No foul play is suspected as the contractor, Rotherhithe New Road’s Seymour Valentine Ltd, went into administration in September, owing creditors £349,131 - including £33,356 to Southwark Council.

Cabinet members have meanwhile managed to swear off the sweet stuff, it seems – although other unhealthy drinks are still firmly on the menu.

Cllrs Stephanie Cryan (Rotherhithe, Lab) and Richard Livingstone (OKR, Lab) were spotted at a party quiz night surrounded by cheap beers and wine. The drinks may rot the liver, but at least they won’t rot the teeth!

I have recently been working with local MPs, Councillors and the Southbank Business Forum in Southwark to address concerns over the potential cuts to the Met Patrol Plus scheme.

This scheme allows local authorities or business improvement districts to procure additional police officers, with the Mayor’s Officer for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) matching this funding. This effectively provides the organisation with a ‘buy one get one free’ offer for officers.

When the city sees large demonstrations, events, protests taking place, the Met are able to take officers from London boroughs to be used centrally for these events. Due

to location, Southwark is often a point of call for these numbers.

To help manage this, the Met Plus officers are crucial in making sure Southwark is not without officers.

Whilst MOPAC and the Met Commissioner have not yet announced exactly what the cuts will entail, they have indicated that it will be largely ‘scaled back’.

I have written a joint letter to the Deputy Mayor for Policing to highlight the concerns I, and many Southwark residents, have.

I am pushing for assurances that any decisions taken will account for the abstraction that often happens from the Southwark police force and will not leave Southwark with a significant shortfall in police numbers on these occasions.

A PARTNERSHIP of councils are working together to give practical advice on cutting the costs of keeping homes warm, announced town hall bosses to mark Fuel Poverty Day last week.

Laudable, but it might be a little on the nose for council tenants currently suffering weeks long outages of heating, forking out their cash on portable heaters. One disgruntled Brandon Estate resident took to the council’s Facebook comments to point out moneysaving advice for your heating doesn’t help when your heating doesn’t work to begin with.

NWELCOME MORNING alarms, breakfasts cut short, missing keys and that sinking feeling when you see your bus driving away without you: the trials of the morning commute are familiar to everyone.

This is especially true for parents attempting to feed, dress and bundle their children off to school and make it into work in time.

So imagine the nightmare lived by homeless families whose only option is often to move into temporary housing outside Southwark, far from school and far from their jobs and other responsibilities, while they hope a permanent home will become available.

Parents who have already suffered the desperation of being made homeless now tell us they are stuck spending hours a day on buses travelling back into Southwark from the outer reaches of London.

They are spending money they can ill-afford on a school run so lengthy they even have to cut down their working hours; making their financial position all the more precarious.

This week’s council budget papers for 2019-20 show the impact of £8m cuts central government has made to Southwark’s budget.

On top of having to make savings and find cash elsewhere, the council is also left picking up the pieces of national policy failures beyond its control – from Universal Credit pushing more people into debt, to right-to-buy which has exacerbated the housing shortage.

Southwark Council’s temporary accommodation costs are expected to rise – especially as the Aylesbury demolition gathers pace.

A significant proportion of the people who are given housing in the borough are in empty homes on the estate.

Many have branded them uninhabitable due to long-running heating and hot water breakdowns, pest infestations, and needles and other drug paraphernalia blighting communal stairways and lifts.

When these blocks are eventually demolished, there will be even less housing available for those in crisis and more people ending up scattered elsewhere.

The Lib Dems say cracking down on the number of empty homes across Southwark, like secondhomes or homes in-between lets, is a no-brainer. Labour says building more council homes is the only real solution.

In its election manifesto, the council’s Labour administration committed to building at least 1,000 more council homes by 2022, and 11,000 by 2043. We won’t feel the benefit of these new homes for a generation.

In the meantime, more homeless families will be trapped in short-term housing far away from work and school, and far away from the borough they still call home.

There is a massive amount of people being mugged around Canada Water, Jamaica Road and Rotherhite New Road.

The boys doing this are young and are on bikes, preying on anyone they can get a mobile phone from. The boys either wear balaclavas or put their hoods up.

They put a knife to the person asking for their phone.

This has been happening for weeks!

I myself was followed by two boys on bikes last week, I was very lucky to be right next to my estate.

I did call the police and was informed they will send someone. They called me an hour and half later to inform me they were sending someone.

These boys pulled a knife on someone literally five minutes after they left me. If the police did arrive when they were told, they would have caught these boys.

This is getting really out of hand and people are getting very close to taking matters into their own hands because the police say they don’t have enough staff due to cuts. I totally get that, but why were there six police officers last night inside Bermondsey station? That station is small and does not require six officers, especially when the crime rate is really high! These officers should be patrolling the streets because the minute someone gets seriously hurt that’s when you see loads of officers present.

The scheme will support many businesses and we hope the Mayor can work with government to call for extra matched-funding, and, for an allencompassing retrofit scheme to help those with essential business vehicles that will not be eligible for this scheme.

TfL and the Mayor must use the final six weeks to significantly increase spending on external communications on the ULEZ scheme as many small businesses inside London are unaware. A relentless focus by TfL on communicating the message over the next few months is critical – we want to start seeing those ULEZ messages at the pumps where businesses fill up their vehicles!

We need a soft start to the scheme (which occurred with the start of the LEZ scheme in 2008) with the writing of letters to businesses that have entered the zone with a vehicle that does not meet the emissions standard on April 8th – and state that they have three months to change vehicles or they will receive the backdated charges.

And finally, TfL should provide a period of grace of twelve months to businesses who have entered the zone who can prove they have a lease that runs up to April 2020 – when the original ULEZ date was set by the previous Mayor.

A THIRTY-YEAR-OLD man from Kennington has been charged with murder by detectives investigating the death of stab victim Bright Akinleye in Camden.

Tashan Brewster, from Kennington Park Road, was arrested on Wednesday, February 20 and charged with murder four days later, on Saturday, February 23.

He has now been remanded in custody after appearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. A date for his trial at the Old Bailey is yet to be set.

Twenty-two-year-old Bright Akinleye was pronounced dead by emergency services at 11.31pm on Monday, February 18, after he collapsed from stab injuries in the lobby of a hotel on Euston Road.

Two other men arrested last Wednesday on suspicion of murder have now been released on bail until late March.

Four men and seven women, aged from nineteen to 28, were arrested on Monday, February 18, at an address in Camden on suspicion of murder and have also been released on bail until next month.

‘OLD TIMER’ RON PASSES AWAY AFTER WORKING UP TO AGE OF 86 BILLINGSGATE MARKET held a minute’s silence to honour one of London’s last independent fishmongers who passed away this month after 70 years in the trade.

Ron Rosenfeld, who ran Rose Brothers fishmongers from East Street for 54 years from 1964 until 2015, passed away on February 9, aged 86.

Traders at the iconic market in Poplar held the minute’s silence at 6.40am last Friday for Ron, one of their longest serving customers.

A well-known and respected figure in the Walworth community, Ron learned the trade from his Uncle Dave, from Bow, whom he accompanied on visits to Billingsgate from the age of fourteen on his return to London after being evacuated

Dr Shankar-Hari, a critical care physician, was singled out as the only doctor worldwide to receive this year’s Lowry Fink Fellowship from the International Sepsis Forum.

Sepsis is a serious condition, caused by the body going into overdrive when trying to respond to an infection.

There is currently no cure, and without quick treatment, sepsis can lead to multiple organ failure and death. In England, one in four people admitted to intensive care have sepsis.

Dr Shankar-Hari’s research looks at how to improve outcomes for critically ill sepsis patients, including the longer-term risk of infection and death in sepsis survivors.

He is working on a clinical trial into whether the pneumococcal vaccine, known as ‘the pneumonia vaccine’, can help reduce repeat bacterial infections.

Dr Shankar said: “This Fellowship allows me to interact with international leaders in sepsis research and learn from their work.

“It’s also a global recognition of my research into sepsis and will help me explore different approaches to reduce the burden of sepsis.

“My hope is that this will help my research to lead to benefits for patients.”

The project, a collaboration between the CCG and King’s College Hospital, aimed to improve blood clots prevention relating to atrial fibrillation – a condition which causes irregular heart rates.

Over a year, the scheme identified those at highest risk of strokes across Southwark and Lambeth by reviewing 1,500 patients who had atrial fibrillation but weren’t getting blood clot prevention treatments.

Specialist pharmacist ‘virtual clinics’ identified patients who would most benefit from treatment, discussed options with them and produced personalised plans for each of them.

Helen Williams, Consultant Pharmacist for cardiovascular disease at NHS Southwark CCG, said: “It was widely recognised, both locally and nationally, that a significant number of stroke patients were not receiving anticoagulation treatment, despite being known to have atrial fibrillation.

“Working with health and care partners across Lambeth and Southwark, our pharmacist-led virtual health clinics have helped ensure that

an additional 1,200 people with AF are receiving the blood thinning treatment – with a consequent reduction of 25 per cent in the number of AF-related strokes.”

The impressive results now mean the model is being rolled out to other areas in south London – and has even seen the clinical commissioning group being highly commended at an awards ceremony last year (pictured).

“The programme is an excellent example of how colleagues from across the NHS can work collaboratively to deliver improved health outcomes for local patients, and I’m delighted that as a result of its success, the model has been rolled out to other areas – with similarly positive outcomes,” said Ms Williams.

‘Virtual clinics’ bring together GP practice staff with local specialists to discuss how they can improve care – for instance with a pharmacist.

A true Bermondsey girl

aisy Wilson was born Daisy Smith in 1919 and grew up in 1, Rouel Road, where she lived until she married in 1940. It was a simpler time then, writes Michael Holland...

Children would entertain themselves with objects they found; Daisy thinks it was better growing up back then. “We could play in the street without having to dodge cars - all we had to dodge was the horse and carts!” she said.

“We used to get a bit of rope to play skipping or high jump with all the other children in the street. That same bit of rope would then be tied around the top of the old gas lamps to make a swing.”

Daisy’s eyes lit up as she recalled playing marbles and hopscotch.

“Nobody minded if you chalked a hopscotch outside their house. I was also very good at roller-skating; I used to skate in Linsey Street because that was a nice smooth road.” But straying away from the safety of the front door was strictly forbidden for Daisy, especially up along the river where cranes would be lifting heavy loads literally above the heads of pedestrians, plus the dangerous tides in the Thames. “I wasn’t allowed to go up there until I was about 13,” recalls this lady with almost a century of memories. “But even then I wouldn’t go down on the beach as I was always frightened. I don’t like water as I never learnt to swim.”

“I used to go over Southwark Park a lot as a child and then when I had my own children I would take them over there.

All you needed was a bat and ball to enjoy yourself.”

Some Saturdays would be spent with aunts and cousins in Greenwich Park.

“We used to get a penny ride on the No. 68 tram to get there; I was an only child so I liked going out with other kids. All we took was a sandwich and some water and we’d spend the whole day there. I loved it.”

As time went on the borders of Daisy’s world expanded. “If we had someone older with us we were allowed to go over to the Tower with a picnic or a jam sandwich and play all day on the big guns there.”

Christmas was always a special time of the year for Daisy, which would be spent with her grandparents in Wolseley Buildings, two roomed flats with shared toilets and water. “It sounds very crude but people used to get on with it,” she remembers. “And Christmas was the only time we ever had chocolate.” These days, though, she sits with a packet of Jelly Babies and Werthers Originals always within reach.

Daisy’s mum, also Daisy, at one time worked in an animal skin factory - part of Bermondsey’s huge leather industry.

“If mum was ever out of work she would easily find another job. She worked in Hartley’s Jam Factory, Crosse & Blackwell’s canning factory in Crimscott Street, and at Easter and Christmas she worked in Shuttleworth’s - the chocolate factory - so she always worked, but was always there when I got home from school.”

Her father Bert’s employment was not as regular. Daisy reveals: “It was a bit iffy for Dad as he was a welder and couldn’t always find work. He used to queue up at Surrey Docks where the men called on at the bus shelter in Redriff Road, to see if there was any casual work there. Now and again welding jobs came along; one was making Crittall Windows out in Essex, so he had to leave very early in the morning, and then a job making toys for Triang.”

Charlie Wilson was a member of the famous Oxford and Bermondsey Club for boys and Daisy went to Time and Talents Club, where young ladies went.

“One day, when we were about 16,”

begins Daisy, “a message came from the boys’ club asking if any girls wanted to play badminton. We didn’t even know what it was but still managed to find four of us to play. We went along and were given partners - I got Charlie - and we became quite good at it. And, guess what?” she asks rhetorically. “All four of us girls ended up marrying our badminton partners!”

Daisy related tales of playing against clubs in the East End and the thrill of walking back victorious over Tower Bridge to stop at the coffee stall that was once there. “I used to have a sav sandwich and a cup of tea,” she tells me, remembering those happy times with a chuckle. “I loved a sav sandwich.”

Daisy Smith’s first job was in Hobbs, a drapers store on Southwark Park Road.

“I used to get six bob a week (30p) and had to give my mum four bob of that (20p),” she laughs at the memory. “I ended up with two bob for myself (10p).” The Bermondsey girl adds “we didn’t have much money to spare but we were happy and that’s the main thing.”

Hobbs didn’t give pay rises, so Daisy moved to a baker’s in the Old Kent Road and then to a job in Gamages, the huge department store in Holborn. “That was a lovely job, I loved it there.”

In 1940, when Daisy married Charlie, who worked at an estate agent’s in Grange Road, they moved into two rooms just along from her family home

at No.7 Rouel Road. “With the bombing and all that,” begins this local legend, “we got bombed out and was given a flat in Penge. I had to travel to work by train and my husband joined the army.”

While at Penge her first son Peter was born, so Daisy moved back to Tenda Road to be close to her family and has memories of nights spent in the Anderson shelter at the end of the garden. With her mum looking after baby Peter, Daisy got a job in the offices of the old Bermondsey Town Hall in Spa Road, where she spent many happy years.

When the war ended, and with the family more settled, Charlie and Daisy had more children: Barbara, Bruce, Pam and Amanda arrived and in 1962 they moved into a house in Wilson Grove.

“You had to have five children to qualify for a house,” Daisy recalls, “and we had five.” Anita, the youngest, was born next in the new home that the Wilson siblings were raised in, and it is the home where Daisy lived happily for the next 56 years. Her daughter Amanda and her family still live in that house, but Daisy sadly passed away in 2018 at the grand age of 98 - not long after she did this interview.

Pexican happy to be ‘chasing purses’

BRITISH WELTERWEIGHT champion Johnny Garton reflected that his professional career did not get off to the most auspicious beginnings – partly because his own trainer wasn't hugely enthused over the prospect of working with him.

Garton did end up learning the pro ropes at the iBox Gym in Bromley under the tutelage of Alan Smith, who is known in the business as a specialist in harnessing the talents of more defensively-minded, stylish counter punchers.

The now 31-year-old Garton wasn't the ideal horse for the course at Smith's stable of thoroughbreds because, by his own admission, his amateur skillset was limited at best.

“I believe I had 30-35 fights and lost about ten, maybe a few more,” revealed the fighter known as The Pexican.

“I wasn't the greatest and I was even worse as an amateur - even more of a slugger.

“I used to just have a tear-up for three rounds and knew on turning pro that I needed to change.

“I remember speaking to Al and he wasn't overly keen because he knew I got hit too much. But I knew Al was the right coach, so I kept chipping away and kept coming back and annoying him.

“Here we are now.”

Garton won the British welterweight title when he defeated Gary Corcoran by technical knockout last October.

“I broke the mould at this gym,” he joked. “But I am bringing titles

back and that is the main thing,” he added, before conceding that he never imagined making a living from boxing when his primary aim was selling enough tickets to even step into the ring.

“Never, no. Most of my career, up to about two years ago, was all ticket deals where if you don't sell tickets you don't fight and earn little money.

“I haven't really earned much money from the sport and that is why I am chasing the purses now.

“It was massively disheartening back then but I love the sport of boxing and I always had my job to fall back on. At times when you saw people doing well with big pay days it was a bit of a kick in the teeth.”

A turning point for Garton came in December 2017 when he added the IBF European title to the Southern Area and English belts he had previously won after a bruising encounter with Mihail Orlov at the Copper Box. “I'd just got signed by Frank [Warren] then and it was such a good fight that they showed it back on BoxNation. From there I think people started taking an interest in me.”

Now the Garton story moves on to probably the grandest venue of all, the Royal Albert Hall in South Kensington, on Friday March 8 against Chris Jenkins, live on BT Sport.

Millwall fan Garton said: “It’s a breath-taking venue and, to me, it doesn't seem like a boxing venue because it’s too nice. I can't wait to get out there and for my supporters to see it.”

Garton: ‘You might see something different from me’ JOHNNY GARTON is making a first defence of his British welterweight title against Chris Jenkins at the Royal Albert Hall.

The Pexican collected the treasured Lonsdale belt following a thrilling encounter with Gary Corcoran in October - stopping the Wembley man in the eleventh round - and he now faces the tough Welshman on March 8 when boxing makes its return to the historic South Kensington venue.

Jenkins, 30, has twice before challenged for the British title at super lightweight. As a then-

unbeaten fighter in July 2015, he took on Tyrone Nurse for the vacant title and an exciting fight was declared a majority draw by the judges.

The pair rematched four months later and Nurse prevailed in another closely contested bout.

The 20-3-2 Jenkins has subsequently added a further four wins to his record, but has also suffered the misfortune of severe cuts curtailing two of his fights against Akeem Ennis-Brown and Darragh Foley.

“There were rumours that I would be fighting Chris and now it is

confirmed,” Garton said when the contest was announced. “I think it’s a good tough fight and I’m looking forward to it.”

Garton joked: “We both cut easily so I would put my money on a bit of blood being spilt on the canvas “Chris is a very tough man and he has been down here at our gym sparring before when Liam Williams also came down. It was a very good spar between us, very hard, and I expect the same on the night.”

“He’s very energetic and a bit of a crazy fella. It’s going to be good.

Garton explained he would

employ some technical boxing to add to his typical marauding style.

“We’re always working on technique because I can't keep plodding forward like I have done in my last couple of fights. I need to work on things and I think you might see something different from me in this fight.”

Elsewhere on the show at the Royal Albert Hall, Nicola Adams OBE will look to make history and be the first female crowned world champion at the venue as she challenges for the WBO world flyweight title against Arely Mucino on International Women’s

Day. Daniel Dubois follows in the footsteps of British heavyweight greats to fight at the Hall and takes on Razvan Cojanu in his tenth fight. Liam Williams puts his newly won British middleweight title on the line against Brentwood bruiser Joe Mullender.

Lucien Reid will fight Indi Sangha in what will be his toughest test to date, while GB flyweight Harvey Horn and cruiserweight talent James Branch feature.

DULWICH HAMLET conceded five goals in 56 minutes at Torquay United last Saturday to remain in relegation trouble with fourteen games left in National League South this season.

Hamlet were four down at the break and shipped a fifth before they pulled two goals back through Dipo Akinyemi from the spot and Nathan Green with 20 minutes.

But Gavin Rose’s side couldn’t pull off a miracle as they failed to build on the previous weekend’s comeback against Hemel Hempstead.

Jamie Reid fired the hosts ahead in just the sixth minute and Saikou Janneh doubled the lead fifteen minutes in.

Hamlet looked like they would have some chance to salvage something in the second half but, a minute before the break, Janneh added his second and in the nine minutes of added-time Reid scored a penalty to all but wrap up the points for his side.

Kalvin Lumbombo-Kalala heaped more misery on the visitors eleven minutes after half-time before Akinyemi and Green put some respectability on the scoreline.

Hamlet were caught out by a set-piece and then a counter-attack as they fell two goals behind.

The referee had to be replaced midway through the half with a Torquay fan taking over linesman duties.

The officials were involved as Torquay added two more before the break, from a corner and then from the penalty spot.

Teddy Kinsler, 14, added to the silver medal she won for the 100m breaststroke in the first weekend with another silver, this time in the 50m breaststroke, and a hugely impressive gold in the 200m breaststroke. She also managed sixth place in both the 200m and 400m individual medleys.

Daniel Senior-Osajivbe, 11, also had an impressive run, setting new club records in all three of the events he entered: 50m breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle.

And when it came to the relays, Southwark Aquatics’ younger girls proved themselves worthy Davids to the big clubs’ Goliaths, coming tenth in the 4x50m medley.

Overall, the 21 swimmers who represented the club recorded new personal best times across the board, an achievement that sets them up for future success.

In Kinsler, the club has a swimmer who is setting her sights on nationallevel competition. Afterwards, coach Mackinh Tran told the team: “You competed against the best county teams and you fought to gain every second. You have the determination to get better every time you are in the water.”

The club are next in action at the Regional Championships.

Cani hits four as Town go third BEERS WERE flying off the shelves of the new Menace Cafe in glorious sunshine last Saturday afternoon, as over 100 spectators watched Peckham Town go through the gears to secure a 4-2 home victory over Kings Hill in their Kent County League Premier Division clash.

The majority of those at the Menace Arena were toasting former Dulwich Hamlet academy striker Klajdi Cani, who scored all four of Peckham’s goals.

The Menace had gone behind but Cani, who had already headed one chance over the bar, equalised with another header past the flailing Kings Hill goalkeeper, who came out to punch the ball and failed to connect. Shortly afterwards, Cani gave the home side the lead going into the half-time break.

The second half began with an opportunity for Cani to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot, but the Kings Hill keeper made a save low to his left.

Parity was then restored as Kings Hill scored with a penalty of their own that left Peckham goalkeeper Tommy Hobson – who didn’t have too many other saves to make and was quick off his line when called upon all afternoon – with no chance.

The Menace were not deterred, however, and secured all three points as Cani did complete his hat-trick and then scored his fourth. The result leaves Peckham Town third in the table, three points behind second-placed Borden Village but with a game in hand.

Manager Alan Jacobs still believes the team can produce more. He said: “We played some decent stuff out there in patches, but we need to get going much earlier in games to set the tone.

“But I’m pleased with the result.”

Early Bath leaves Fish boss furious DEAN HARRISON was unhappy with the referee’s performance as Fisher lost 1-0 at SCEFL Premier Division leaders Corinthian last weekend.

Jack Bath scored the only goal of the game in the 69th minute to stretch Corinthian’s lead at the top of the table to six points over second-place Fish.

Fisher’s Trey Small was sent off in the 37th minute.

The referee booked five players from either side, as well as unused Fisher substitute Martin Begg after the final whistle.

“The result was influenced by the referee,” Harrison told Kentish Football.

“It should have been two reds because Jamie Billings should have been sent off and it’s the second week in a row that we’ve had a player from the opposite team who should have got

a second yellow and been sent-off – and the referee’s bottled it.

“You either manage the game and don’t give yellows, which the referee did against Punjab and he did it well, or you stay consistent.

“It’s just frightening to watch, some of the decisions were an absolute joke.

“He’s not strong enough. He’s absolutely lost it. He melted under pressure from the home team.

“Every time we’ve come here the referee melts. I don’t know what it is or what’s going on but it absolutely stinks and I’m fed up with it. My staff and my players are fed up with it.

“It doesn’t matter what team I’ve been here with, the ref’s a homer. It’s absolutely ridiculous because they melt on the big decisions every time.”

Corinthian boss Michael Goulding added his opinion.

“I think that’s what people wanted,

wasn’t it? Dean asked for a strong referee and the referee obviously felt he had to ref it through yellow cards.

“There was a couple of them that really weren’t but the referee, I thought he was okay and ended up handling the game quite well. It could have ended up with three or four being sent off because there was a lot of niggly bits, but yes, you get what you ask for.”

Harrison’s mood was lifted on Tuesday night by a superb Fisher comeback.

The Fish were 2-0 down at Lordswood before goals from Pat Geddis, Kushal Campbell-Palmer and Harry Tobin, the latter eight minutes from time, sealed the win.

The gap to Corinthian at the top of the table was reduced to three points. The sides meet in the first leg of the SCEFL Challenge Cup semi-finals on Saturday.

BEN THOMPSON wants to keep banging in the goals – but hopes to be able celebrate the next time he finds the back of the net at The Den.

Thompson, 23, scored his first Championship goal against Preston last weekend, but was unable to fully enjoy it in front of the Cold Blow Lane with Millwall going on to lose 3-1.

Thompson had the ball in the net for a second time but his joy was curtailed by an offside flag.

Midfielder Thompson played in a more advanced role on loan at Portsmouth in the first half of the season and scored two goals in his last four league games before returning to Millwall.

Thompson hopes to be given the chance to show he can be a regular goal threat when Millwall host Norwich this Saturday.

“It was a great achievement for me scoring my first Championship goal but ultimately the result didn’t go our way,” Thompson said.

“It was a great moment for me to score in front of the stand where I used to sit as a kid. I wanted to celebrate it a bit more but that’s not the way it ended up.

Hopefully there can be many more.

“Every goal you score is special. Next time I get one hopefully we’ll be winning and I can celebrate a bit more.

“I’ve scored a few goals this season now and want to keep adding to my tally.

That’s something I’ve been working on, I’ve wanted to add goals to my game and I’m slowly but surely doing that.

“I gained a lot of confidence at Portsmouth to be able to go up the pitch and express myself a bit more on the ball and not be afraid to get into those positions to shoot and score. It’s only helped me.

“There’s a difference between the Championship and League One. Players are stronger, quicker, they’re sharper in the brain and you’ve got to adapt to that. I’ve felt comfortable when I’ve played in the Championship.

“Playing behind the striker I did a few times at Portsmouth. It’s not my natural position but I’ll play where I’m told, I’m just happy to be on the pitch.

“Portsmouth has improved me in a way that I can play attacking or defensive

“I have that versatility, which is obviously good, and wherever I’m put I’ll give it everything.

“Being 3-0 down is tough to come back from but we’ve seen it this season. It’s always a possibility to come on and make an impact. The gaffer told me to try and change the game and affect it and get the place rocking.

“I tried as best I could and I nearly had a second goal as well. I think if we had scored a second it was game on. There would have been no reason why we couldn’t have gone on to get a draw or even nicked a winner.”

Thompson knows what it takes to stop free-scoring Norwich, after he was in Kenny Jackett’s Pompey side that won 10 to dump the ten-man Canaries out of the third round of the FA Cup in January. “[Jackett] just gave us the freedom, we

knew we were a good footballing side and we could match them,” Thompson said.

“The sending-off helped us massively.

They were playing around us, we weren’t struggling but they were on top.

“But we went on to get the upper hand and score right at the death. It was a great experience, a great atmosphere.

“We know how much of a good team they are and the threats they have. We’ve got to go into it with the mentality that no goals go in our end.

“No, I don’t think so,” Martin laughed.

“I think the repercussions would be not worth it. My opinion on it is if you do see your number going up it’s out of your hands then.

“I can see both sides of it. I think once the manager does put your number up you’ve got to walk off.

“But I understand Kepa’s side of it, he wants to be the hero. He wanted to take that risk of staying on if it was going to go to penalties. But it didn’t work out.

“If they’d won and he’d made saves it all would have been okay. But it left everyone in a bad position. The manager probably feels some shame after putting the player’s number up, and from his reaction you could tell he wasn’t best pleased.

“Kepa was selfish in a way, but in a good way.

“I remember playing a game [for MK Dons] against Gillingham away and I ended up having an injury. We’d already made all the subs. The manager, Karl Robinson, wanted to take me off but I told him, ‘you might as well leave me on’. I ended up having a discussion with him and staying on, even though I was hobbling around.

“I’ve never really seen it happen before, but in a game like that you can tell the mentality of Kepa. Sometimes the

goalkeeper wants to be the hero and main man, and be remembered for saving penalties. That probably has influenced his decision to stay on.”

Meanwhile, Martin, who is out of contract in the summer, has addressed his own future.

The 33-year-old stopper has made just four Millwall appearances, one in the league, since joining in September 2017.

“I will look at every opportunity that I have, whether that’s playing or doing something similar to now,” former MK Dons goalkeeper Martin said.

“It will have to be the best situation for me and my family. You can only sometimes react to the card you have been dealt and hopefully you make the right decision.

“Any decision that has ever been made in football is a gamble because there’s

MILLWALL PLAYERS would never pull a stunt like Kepa Arrizabalaga did last Sunday – because the consequences would be too severe.

Chelsea's Kepa refused to be substituted late on in the League Cup final against Manchester City when manager Maurizio Sarri wanted to bring on Willy Caballero after the first-choice stopper had twice gone down with cramp.

Lions suffer fresh injury problems in Hull defeat

MILLWALL HAVE been to Hull and back this week and if Norwich’s forwards keep the devil in them this weekend the ordeal may not be over.

The Lions haven’t chosen the best time to become porous in defence again, with the top-scoring, leagueleading Canaries in town on Saturday.

Add to that Millwall could be

without their four senior full-backs, after Murray Wallace went off injured at the KCOM Stadium following a brave early block.

Mahlon Romeo was absent on Tuesday, Neil Harris hoping he would recover from illness in time to face Daniel Farke’s side.

After being so solid six days earlier against Derby, Millwall looked like they could concede every time Hull attacked.

Ryan Leonard was a makeshift right-back, and Kamil Grosicki was in the mood to show that at this level

that kind of remedial action is ruthlessly exploited.

Leonard stuck gamely to his job, and reduced Grosicki’s influence after the break, helped by an improved Millwall performance.

Last season at the same stadium, Millwall were ahead after 27 seconds through George Saville.

There couldn’t have been a more different start this time. Eight minutes in, Wallace and Jake Cooper slid in to stop the danger from Grosicki’s cross. Wallace stayed prone as the ball squirted out to

Markus Henriksen and Jarrod Bowen diverted his shot past Jordan Archer.

The game was held up for a number of minutes as Wallace received attention. Steve Morison was summoned and came on in the thirteenth minute.

Morison, whose time on the pitch has been so limited this season, went on to have a fine game.

Morison had set up Thompson’s goal against Preston last weekend, and in the 34th minute against Nigel Adkins’ side his ball across the six-yard box caused a scramble, before Shaun Hutchinson neatly finished low last David Marshall’s left hand.

It was Hutchinson’s first goal since the 1-1 draw against Sunderland in March 2018 and at that stage you would have fancied Millwall to go on and win it.

But just two minutes before the break the defensive failings that marked the first half of the campaign came back to haunt them.

Unusually, Hutchinson was one of those culpable. Todd Kane shouldn’t have been allowed the time and space to cross three minutes before the break.

Hutchinson then lunged for the ball and missed it, and with the defender out of the picture Marc Pugh took a touch twelve yards out before slotting past Jordan Archer with his next one.

It was the lowest-ever league crowd at the stadium, home fans staying away over unhappiness at the way the club is run by the Allam family.

At least Millwall don’t have that problem, but this is now a relegation battle.

They could have rescued something from this game in the second half, but Hull, through their dangerous wingers Grosicki and Bowen, could also have inflicted further damage.

Grosicki fired a shot off the post, Archer relieved when the ball bounced off his back and went wide. Moments later Bowen cut in from the right before whizzing a fierce drive just past the same post.

Tom Elliott came on and when he flicked on Shane Ferguson’s freekick Morison was in around the back but Marshall blocked his cross.

Tunniclife curled an effort just wide before half-volleying goalwards only to see Marshall save at full stretch.

The closest they went to a leveller was when Cooper headed a corner past Marshall but Bowen was back on the line to block.

The final whistle soon followed and the Millwall players went over to applaud the few hundred of their supporters who had made the long midweek trip.

Harris stood on the sideline with his arms folded, a lot to ponder.

Adkins was later asked if he thought Millwall would stay up.

“They give everyone a problem,” he said. “They’ve had a good cup run, Neil Harris is an excellent manager and they compete, as you could see. They challenge, they’re always going to be in the game and they’re always going to be a threat.

“They’ve done it in the past and I’m sure they’ll do it this season as well.”

This season it’s Hull rather than Millwall making a late surge for the play-offs. The Lions are cutting it fine with twelve games to go.

Ben Marshall can’t play against his parent club under the terms of his loan arrangement.

Harris recalled Tom Elliott last Saturday against Preston but the striker was taken off at the break after an unhappy 45 minutes.

Daniel Farke’s Norwich are the highest scorers in the Championship with 68 goals, four of them against the Lions earlier this season.

Millwall have scored just one goal in their last four league games at The Den, Ben Thompson’s consolation against Preston last Saturday.

Norwich scored twice in addedtime to defeat Millwall 4-3 in November.

“They are one of three or four teams that are really pleasing on the eye, really good to watch. I really enjoy watching them,” Harris said.

“They score a bundle of goals, let in a lot. They’re a free-flowing team that can hurt you at any given time.

“The quality speaks for itself when Ben Marshall can’t get in the match-day squad at Norwich.

“I’ve been really impressed by them this year and am quietly pleased they’ve done well, I’ve got to be honest, because I like the way they play. They can pass the ball but they can get the ball forward

quickly behind you as well.

“They’re similar to Preston in that manner, they’re not afraid to pass forward and turn you. They’ve got real quality and score all sorts of goals.”

Harris will decide whether to play 4-4-2 or switch to one main striker against the Canaries, with options in wide areas in the absence of Marshall.

Harris said: “I decided last weekend to utilise certain of our strengths first half against Preston and, I’ve got to be honest, it didn’t work.

“Ben not being available is a loss because he gives us real quality and end product, but there are players wanting to come back into the group.

“Jiri Skalak is working hard behind the scenes and featured in the FA Cup. We’ve got Aiden [O’Brien] and Fred [Onyedinma], and Shane Ferguson has played really well.

“I’ve got to think about freshness of the team after three games in the previous nine days. There will be a lot to consider.”

BEN THOMPSON knows Millwall fans are hard to please – but said they will “stick with us to the end” as the Lions try to secure their Championship status.

Millwall have been in the bottom six for most of the season and look like they are in a battle with five clubs to avoid being one of the three that go down.

Neil Harris’ side were booed by some supporters as they left the pitch trailing Preston by three goals at half-time last Saturday.

Lions fan Thompson provided one of the only positives for the home side when he scored his first Championship goal, and he insists his team-mates can handle the pressure of a relegation fight.

He is also confident that they will have the full backing of their supporters.

“I know what the Millwall fans are like, I’ve been up in the crowd myself. It is a hard set of fans,” Thompson said.

“I saw Jed [Wallace] come out the other day saying what a tough set of fans they are to play in front of and you have to be a certain character. That’s 100 per cent true.

“The boys in the dressing room can all play under that pressure from Millwall fans.

“But the supporters will stick with us to the end, Millwall fans always do. They support the club, they love the club and they’re so passionate.

“We know we’ll have their support and we just have to make sure we get the results for them.

“It wasn’t going so well last weekend at 3-0 down but second half they really got behind the team, got us going.

“When I came on I felt the atmosphere in the crowd change and everyone was backing us. If one more had dropped in it could have been different.

“They’ll stick with us against Norwich and we’ll go and give it our best. None of the players go out there thinking we’re going to have a bad game or we’re going to lose.

“Everyone wants to win every game, there’s nothing more certain in that dressing room. We’ve got to just go and give it our all – and deliver.”

Brad news is good for Lions

TOM BRADSHAW is set to return to Millwall training by the end of the season – but it will be 2019-20 before he returns to competitive action.

Bradshaw is recovering from knee ligament damage and recently started light running on a treadmill.

After he was injured against Brentford on November 3, Millwall boss Neil Harris wasn’t sure if the striker would return for the start of pre-season training.

But Bradshaw’s progress means he is on course for the beginning of next season’s preparations in June.

Harris said: “He’ll be out on the training pitch before the end of the season, but won’t be in a match-day squad.

“He’ll be on the start line with all the boys on the first day of preseason training.”

Meanwhile, Harris insisted Millwall were not looking at the rest of the season in terms of a relegation battle.

The Lions are in the bottom six with just twelve games left this campaign.

After Norwich this weekend, Millwall face relegation rivals Bolton Wanderers. There is a daunting looking run of games in April, with Harris’ side playing West Brom, QPR, Sheffield United, Brentford, Aston Villa and Stoke.

Harris said: “We don’t so much look at the bigger picture, we look at each game on its merits. We want to try to win every game.

“We just need to keep amassing points, that’s all we can do.”
