NEIL COYLE says he turned down an offer to join the breakaway group of eight Labour MPs who resigned and formed an independent group this week, saying he will stay with Labour because it is still the ‘vehicle for aspiration and hope’ for voters.

On Monday seven labour MPs announced they were leaving the Labour Party and forming an independent group, claiming ‘none of today’s political parties are fit to provide the leadership and direction needed by our country’. An eighth MP joined on Tuesday.

Neil Coyle has been a vocal critic of the party’s record on tackling anti-Semitism and the leadership’s lacklustre remain campaign in the run up to the EU referendum.

Previously pegged as a potential ally for the group, Coyle told the News he had been approached by the faction but had turned them down.

“They have made their decision and I’m not going to criticise what they have said, as I understand their concerns,” he told the News.

“I will work in the Labour party to address those legitimate and genuine concerns over Europe, anti-Semitism, and members who feel shut out of making decisions.

“I believe the Labour Party is the vehicle for aspiration and hope for working people, and I believe Labour is best when it is boldest, and it is that boldness that we need to tackle internal problems.”

Never one to avoid a twitter showdown, Coyle has also been on the warpath against ‘swaggering brocialists’, taking aim at what he believes are sexist, bullying, male leftwingers on social media, whom he says are ‘riding roughshod over our party’s values’, warning more MPs, councillors and members will leave if online abuse is not tackled.

At the time of going to press, the News understands Harriet Harman is planning to make a statement to her constituency party on the split. The Camberwell and Peckham MP, who was first elected into the house in 1982 is expected to back calls for Labour to address antisemitism and other issues that have led to the resignations whilst reiterating her support for the party.

Contrary to some speculation, Harman has not been approached by the independents and will stay with Labour.

The Southwark News is proud to be the only independent, paid for newspaper in London.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

“When the Labour Party has focused on our internal differences, we allow the Tories to continue with their damaging agenda unchecked and fail to defend the most marginalised,” said Hayes.

And although the independents have left the Labour Party, none have stood down as MPs, despite being elected – in some cases with big majorities – on the back of Corbyn’s electoral campaign.

Southwark Momentum called on the independents to do the ‘honourable’ thing and resign to force by-elections, so their

constituents could decide who should be representing them in parliament.

“We are disappointed that MPs elected on Labour's manifesto in 2017 have chosen to abandon the party.

“Their constituencies elected Labour MPs not independents or 'new centrists'.

“The honourable course of action would be for these MPs to resign their seats and fight by-elections, to give their constituents a democratic say in what party represents them,” a spokesperson said. *Three Conservative MPs defected to the independents on Wednesday morning.

YOU MAY or may not be used to drag queens telling you to ‘Sissy that walk!’, but one unusual fitness class in Bankside might also see queens telling you to lift those weights, do those lunges and push that stretch, too.

A new group fitness session at the Bankside Health Club has all the normal features of a group exercise class – alongside performances from a rolling cast of drag artists such as Mary Poppers, Bella U. Voyáge and Mayowa Monaé.

The ‘Drag Diva Fit’ sessions are a partnership between fitness instructor Jordan McInerny, 42, and Dragged around London, a company which runs “fruity and fabulous” drag-queen guided tours around the city.

“This idea came to me about two years ago, I come from New York where is drag is this huge thing. I just thought it would be great if instead of me making a fool of myself, it’d be great to have drag acts doing it instead,” Jordan says.

So far there have been three sessions of the 50-minute fortnightly fitness classes since it started in January, after a successful charity pilot event late last year.

The queens don’t always exercise themselves – “lip-syncing in heels is enough exercise for us dear”, says one – but perform lip-syncs in between exercises to pop ballads being played by Jordan and some of their own choosing.

“The best way to motivate people [during exercise] is to play really good music,” he says.

“Jordan makes them do exercise, and we do whatever we want,” says

Maneeta, who has been doing drag for around two years. In one class she led fitness fanatics in a Bollywood-style exercise, “like a Zumba class with Bollywood moves.”

“They prance around making people laugh. It just turns into one massive dance party,” adds the fitness instructor.

For non-class goers, the sight of a queen in heels confidently strolling through the gym can cause a stare or two.

“The people are loving it. It’s quite funny though, walking through the gym and seeing people on the exercise equipment look at you, it’s quite unexpected,” says Maneeta, who co-runs Dragged in London when not performing.

But the addition of drag artists in a fitness class has an advantage for the artists too, by bringing them into spaces they wouldn’t normally perform, she says.

“The great thing about the gym classes is that a lot of queer people have been bullied, so it’s a way of queering that space, making it feel safer for queer people.”

Alongside the walking tours provided

by Dragged around London, the fitness sessions also give chances for new acts to perform, away from overcrowded gay bars.

“It’s about getting drag queens into places they aren’t normally,” says Maneeta.

Residents lose Tate Modern privacy case - as judge suggests they could put up net curtains

RESIDENTS OF a multimillion pound block of flats neighbouring the Tate Modern lost their High Court privacy challenge last Tuesday.

Five residents in the Neo Bankside development, just metres away from the Tate Modern, had launched a legal challenge against the institution’s viewing platform, which allows tourists to see inside their “extensively glassed flats.”

However, in the ruling, Lord Justice Mann ruled that they had knowingly bought properties with floor-to-ceiling windows – and they could consider putting up net curtains.

One resident, Ian McFadyen, had complained that the “relentless

intrusion” from tourists on the viewing platform – completed as part of an extension in 2016 – left him and his family feeling as if they were in a zoo.

His son, Alexander, claimed to have counted 84 people taking photographs into the apartment over a 90 minute period.

Another claimant, Claire Fearn, told the court that the first experience of people in the viewing gallery had left her “sick to the stomach.”

The claimants had sought an injunction requiring the Tate Modern to close part of the viewing gallery or to erect screens.

But Lord Justice Mann said ruled while there was a material intrusion of privacy from the tourists, there would be no claim if the properties had regular sized windows.

“These properties are impressive, and no doubt there are great advantages to

be enjoyed in such extensive glassed views, but that in effect comes at a price in terms of privacy,” he ruled.

Residents could lower the solar blinds present in each flat, install privacy film, or even install tall plants in the winter gardens to obscure the view, he said. “[This] will, of course, detract from their living conditions, but not to an unacceptable degree,” he wrote.

“Looking at the overall balance which has to be achieved, the availability and reasonableness of such measures is another reason why I consider there to be no nuisance in this case.”

According to Forsters, the leading Mayfair law firm which represented the residents, an appeal against the ruling is being considered.

In a statement following the

judgement, a Tate Modern spokesperson said: “The Level 10 Viewing Platform is an important part of Tate Modern’s public offer and we are pleased it will remain available to our visitors.

“We continue to be mindful of the amenity of our neighbours and the role Tate Modern has to play in the local community.”

£87M BID FOR GOVERNMENT CASH COULD SEE SECOND SURREY QUAYS STATION ENTRANCE

AN £87M bid for Government cash could see Surrey Quays station get a second entrance, a new station on Surrey Canal Road and “additional facilities” at Canada Water bus station.

Transport for London submitted the bid to the Housing Infrastructure Fund on December 3, which it says would support 14,000 new homes by 2031.

The bid also includes funding to

increase the number of trains on the East London line to twenty an hour.

The additional facilities at Canada Water bus station would see a new route to serve the 3,500 home Convoys Wharf mixed-use development in nearby Deptford.

A decision is expected from central Government later this year.

The application was first revealed in a report given by Commissioner Mike Brown to the TfL board at the end of January.

Meanwhile design work for the Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf crossing is continuing, the report said.

WARRANT FOR BERMONDSEY MAN’S ARREST AFTER STEALING FREE NEWSPAPERS AT LONDON BRIDGE

TWO MEN have been convicted of stealing free newspapers from London Bridge station in a ‘landmark’ ruling – while a warrant has been issued for one of their arrests.

Hampson Way, Lambeth, were spotted loading batches of free papers into a van on the evening of Thursday April 6 2017.

The pair are believed to have stolen more than a thousand copies of the free papers.

When questioned by officers, the pair admitted to planning to sell the papers to a recycling plant, claiming they were being paid £30 each by an undisclosed boss to do it.

Larez-Serrano, 37, was convicted in his absence for theft and fraud and sentenced to eight weeks in prison – and now a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Mejia pleaded guilty to counts of theft and fraud committed in April 2017, December 2017, and January 2018, all relating to the excessive theft of newspapers at London Bridge station.

The 32-year-old was handed a 16-week prison sentence suspended for a year at

The ruling is reportedly the first to confirm the stealing of free newspapers as an offence, paving the way for future convictions.

British Transport Police DC Mike Ganly said: “This is a landmark ruling and has officially made the excessive theft

of free newspapers an offence. It shows the efforts our officers take to identify and investigate new and emerging crimes.

“This has been a very intriguing case from a law perspective. With the help of the courts we have sought to answer if something given away freely can be stolen. With the conviction of these two men, the answer is clear and we can seek to pursue similar crimes in the future.”

Albion Primary will now be able to welcome 210 more pupils through its gates

A ROTHERHITHE primary’s new school building was officially unveiled last week by staff, councillors and Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle.

Albion Primary School, on Albion Street, will now be able to accommodate 420 pupils after its buildings were completely rebuilt and modernised.

Classroom spaces have been expanded during the refurb to allow for a dedicated reading nook and more natural light.

An extra storey was also added onto the building dedicated to Key Stage Two learning.

Among other new additions to the school are a roof terrace with an artificial grass playing pitch, a studio for music, drama and dance, and double-height gym that can be used for sports and assemblies.

“We wanted to ensure that the new school would give the children bigger classrooms, a more accessible building and more common areas that would ensure the best opportunities to deliver our creative curriculum,” said headteacher

Karl Bardouille on Tuesday (February 12).

“We are all delighted with the extra teaching and learning space that will help us live up to our motto ‘Learn to do well’.”

Southwark Council investment helped to build the new facilities and the school worked closely with the local authority and architects on the design.

Cllr Jasmine Ali, the cabinet member with responsibility for schools said the building was an example of “one of the real stand-out successes of Southwark Council’s investments into local schools.”

The design was ‘Highly Commended’ in the Building Excellence awards run by the Local Authority Building Control.

Cllr Ali added: “Alongside the quality of the school, which has been recognised by industry bodies, there are now more, much needed primary school places.

“Thanks to the expansion of the school, I am pleased to say that Albion will now be able to welcome 210 more pupils through its gates.”

Outdoor spaces have also been revamped, with ground floor classrooms leading out onto a central courtyard and first-floor rooms leading out onto an outdoor teaching area.

Fired up residents DISCONTENT vent their anger after months of no heating and hot water

AN ANGRY crowd of 400 tenants and leaseholders left without heating and hot water since Christmas vented their frustration at Southwark Council at a public meeting held last week.

One Brandon Estate resident told the News council representatives were ‘jeered and screamed at’ after it emerged they were under the mistaken impression the problems had only been going on for a week, when in fact the Wyndham House boiler has been kaput for five.

At the meeting held at the Rachel Leigh Community Hall, residents from Aberfeldy House and Glenfinlas Way told how years of problems had led up to the current breakdown.

The announcement that the council would offer £100 in compensation per household to those affected was met with dismay by those who were racking up extortionate heating bills.

One leaseholder from Glenfinlas Way told the News this would barely cover the £400 extra heating costs added to his £1,000-plus service charge for the year.

He described the atmosphere at the meeting as a ‘near riot’ and ‘close to throwing chairs’, adding: “A hostile old lady waved her walking stick in the air like a battleaxe. Other elderly women shook their fists and hurled abuse at the top table.”

Isra Black, whose elderly parents live on Andrews Walk, said they had calculated a ‘conservative estimate’ of nearly 300 hours of unscheduled ‘outages’ in their home between November last year and February 5.

Peckham and Nunhead estates have also been affected, with Brimington Estate tenant Norman Williams saying it had not been above fifteen degrees celsius inside his home since the New Year. He claimed five pages of signatures from tenants demanding

action had gone ignored.

As the News reported last month, Aylesbury residents, including a new mother and women in temporary accommodation escaping domestic violence had been left without heating and hot water when a main pipe burst in January, despite half a million pounds of ‘patch up’ preventative maintenance work.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan said the creaking district heating system in Southwark was one of her ‘biggest challenges’.

In a statement sent to the News, the cabinet member for housing and modernisation at Southwark Council said: “We know there have been a large number of boiler breakdowns across our estates over the last couple of winters and this has caused significant problems for our residents, which is not the kind of service we want to deliver as a council.

“Things have been particularly bad on blocks that are served by the Wyndham boiler house, where at one point three of the four boilers had broken down and temporary boilers had to be brought in.

“In many cases heating and hot water has been restored and engineers are working hard to deal with the individual complaints of leaks, airlocks etc that are continuing to prevent a full service being restored.”

She said the council had agreed to reassess the compensation offered to make sure no one was out of pocket.

“We have committed to make sure that everyone is reimbursed for any costs incurred,” she said, going on to explain: “Maintaining our aging district heating systems is one of the biggest challenges we have in housing at the moment, for example with replacement pipe work at Wyndham being estimated at around three times our annual budget for repairs.”

In the meantime, the council is aiming to make ‘targeted repairs’ to the creaking system – but there seems to be resignation on both sides that further problems are likely.

A TERMINALLY-ILL, wheelchair-bound father is one of the many vulnerable people who has been left without heating and hot water during a disastrous winter for Southwark’s council tenants and leaseholders.

John Charen, who lives in Peckham’s Staveley Close with his partner, Donna Cadman, contacted the News after his flat’s heating and hot water had been off, or only intermittently working, for seven days from Sunday, February 3.

The father-of-three who sufferers from Motor Neurone Disease (MND) was forced to rely on three councilprovided fan heaters, and terrified he would be landed with another expensive electricity bill.

A previous ten-day outage October 2018 had left him struggling to pay his supplier, EDF, after a Southwark Council refund took more than six weeks to arrive.

After enquiries made by the News, both Southwark Council and EDF confirmed they were reviewing an outstanding bill for £265.82.

An EDF spokesperson said: “We take our responsibility to support our vulnerable customers very seriously and unfortunately, we were unaware of the difficulties Ms Cadman and her partner are experiencing.

“We have contacted Ms Cadman so we can discuss what additional support we may be able to provide to help them at this time.”

Motor Neurone Disease is particularly severe as it is a degenerative illness which can leave its sufferers ‘locked’ in their body, unable to move, talk, swallow and – eventually – even breathe.

Cllr Cryan said: “It is not okay for Mr Charon to have to use temporary heaters for longer than a day or two given his medical needs and in fact in any other circumstances, if it were possible to for us to do so, we

“We have visited Mr Charon to pick up his current heating bill so we can review it, and future bills arising, to see how we can support him and to make sure he’s not out of pocket as a result of the extra electricity he has had to use on temporary heating.

“While his heating is currently working, we will keep in touch with Mr Charon and continue to monitor it as there have been further issues with his hot water supply.”

A PACKAGING-FREE food store in Herne Hill had a special visit from MP Helen Hayes last weekend as it celebrates one year in business.

Naked Larder was set up last year in a garage in Herne Hill, selling dry goods like nuts, grains, cereals and sugar - and cleaning products.

All its ethically and sustainably sourced produce comes without plastic packaging.

Shoppers order online and collect with their own reusable containers.

Founder Phili Denning says in that short time Naked Larder has helped residents cut out 50,000 food packets and 3,000 plastic water bottles.

And, as the company operates without a shop to keep overheads low, the prices are as competitive as supermarket ownbrands.

Helen Hayes, Member of Parliament for Dulwich and West Norwood, said: “I was delighted to see Naked Larder in action today, and am very impressed with Phili and her team who have managed to create a thriving local business in just twelve months.

“The ethos behind Naked Larder, to reduce packaging and waste, is something that I am very passionate about, as are many of my constituents.

“Naked Larder has already had an incredible impact on our local community and I would love to see more businesses commit to reducing waste, particularly of plastic, in the area.”

In just one year, founder of Naked Larder says in that short time it has helped residents cut out 50,000 food packets and 3,000 plastic water bottles

up in our rivers, seas and oceans, and is already having a catastrophic effect on birds and marine life, as well as littering beauty spots.

According to Greenpeace, an estimated 12.7 million tonnes of plastic, from shopping bags to plastic straws are dumped every year in our oceans – equivalent to a truck load of rubbish every minute. Many of these polluting items are only used once.

In October last year, the government announced cotton buds, plastic straws and drinks stirrers would be banned from the UK by October 2020 in an effort to cut down on single use plastic.

Campaigners are pushing for tougher legislation to force manufacturers to cut down on unnecessary packaging, and make it easier to recycle, to help stop the seas becoming a ‘plastic soup’.

‘MPs put environmental causes top of the agenda’

GREENPEACE CAMPAIGNERS in Southwark are calling on all MPs to put environmental causes at the top of their agendas, saying all main parties are falling short.

Activists from the local branch of the charity want all politicians to commit to reducing plastic waste and promote a ‘genuinely circular economy’; properly protect the public from air pollution and significantly invest in public transport; and guarantee that no environmental protections are opened up through Brexit. Currently, many environmental protection laws are as a result of EU bloc legislation.

Greenpeace member Maria Mancusco said: “At the end of 2018, the UN’s stark warning that we have twelve years left to limit climate catastrophe

was preceded by countless extreme weather events, including the heat wave that hit us here in Southwark.

“The urgency of the crisis we are facing could not be clearer.

“We need to take much bigger and bolder steps in 2019 to ensure that we can create a more sustainable future for all of us here in Southwark and across the world.

“By taking up these actions over the next year, UK politicians would set us on the right track for achieving net zero emissions in the future, and restoring nature back to sustainable levels.

A BOOKS giveaway to the Peter Hills Primary school in Rotherhithe marks the 100,000th donation in a scheme corun by the National Literacy Trust in celebration of International Book Giving Day.

The 100,000 total book donation was part of an ongoing seven-year-long partnership between the National Literacy Trust and British Land to promote literacy in the UK’s less advantaged areas.

The project has helped 35,000 children under the age of 11 to read for fun in their free time, its organisers said.

According to research by the National

Literacy Trust, one in eight disadvantaged children in the UK don’t own a single book, while enjoyment of reading has a reportedly greater impact on children’s educational achievement than their parents’ social class.

Children who are the least engaged with reading are also said to have worse mental wellbeing than their counterparts who are

more engaged.

WORK HAS begun on a new South Bank home for the world-famous Central School of Ballet, following a successful fundraising campaign.

Ms Hall thanked the council for its £3million loan to fund the project, which the school is working “in earnest” to repay.

Cllr Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said the news was “wonderful” and the council was looking forward to welcoming the school as part of “Southwark’s growing reputation as a cultural destination.”

“It is one of our key commitments that local people are able to benefit from the regeneration happening across the borough, and as well as offering local people access to world class entertainment, the school is already running a satellite Ballet school at the Alfred Salter school which has been established since 2012 in anticipation of their move,” he said.

Over 1,200 people use the school’s current facilities each week in Clerkenwell, but the new facilities will allow the school to offer classes to thousands more in Southwark, it said.

Man charged with Lordship Lane murder

A MAN has been charged with murder after a father was stabbed on Lordship Lane on Sunday, February 10.

The bespoke fitting of their new premises is part of a £9 million project announced for the school’s move in March 2017.

A £6million campaign was launched to help finance the move – with support coming in the form of a £3million loan from Southwark Council and £600,000 from the Arts Impact Fund.

Students on the school’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes will begin using the Paris Gardens building during the 2019/20 academic year.

The fit-out will include a state-of-the-art health suite, seven studios and a studiotheatre.

Heidi Hall, Director of Central School of Ballet, said: “The response to the capital campaign to finance our move announced less than two years ago has been exceptional.

“It has been most encouraging that organisations and individual arts enthusiasts believe in our ambition for wider access to dance for the public and improved training facilities for those aiming for a professional dance career.”

World famous Central School of Ballet coming to Southwark with the help of a £3 million loan from the council

Jahmel Michael Riley, aged 24, from Lordship Lane, has been charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

Thirty-nine-year-old Dennis Anderson was found near the junction of Lordship Lane with East Dulwich Grove in the early hours of the Sunday morning, after officers were called to reports of a stabbing. Despite the best efforts of police and paramedics, Mr Anderson died at the scene.

Riley was remanded in custody and was due to appear at Bromley Magistrates' Court on Friday, February 15.

THE MOTHER of a talented cricketer from Kennington who was shot dead in Trinidad has told the News of her determination to continue her son’s legacy and help support other youngsters chose the right path in life.

Adrian St John, who grew up minutes from Oval Cricket ground, died on April 10, 2016 after being shot in Trinidad while on holiday. He was just 22. Although a 24year-old was arrested and charged, no one has been tried for his murder While in Trinidad, Adrian was developing his game and coaching skills, playing the sport he had taken up aged four with encouragement from his father.

His talents saw the former St Thomas the Apostle student become captain of the Chris Gayle Cricket Academy and play for Alleyn’s in Dulwich 85 times between 2009 and 2014.

Although he had a degree in history and philosophy from the University of Hertfordshire, worked in sales and had taken a carpentry course, cricket was his true passion and where he saw his future.

His bereft mother, Sharon, says it was only after his death that she found just how well-respected he was both by his peers, but also by younger men who looked up to him as a role model.

“I found out his impact after he passed,” she says. “He was looked up to, he was an encourager, he had a morals, and a lot of people said he was a team player, and a social butterfly.”

Sharon hopes by raising funds to support a local school in Southwark, and encouraging people to donate outgrown or unused but good quality sport equipment for children in Trinidad, she can create a legacy for Adrian that crosses borders – and prevent more families being left

“Every day I think about when Adrian was little and all the sacrifices and hard work to make sure he made the right choices,” she explains.

As the St John family approach the third anniversary of Adrian’s death, Sharon says the emotional fall out and impact on her family is as hard as ever, describing it as ‘walking a tightrope’ of grief for her, Adrian’s father and his siblings.

Her Go Fund Me page, under the banner of the Adrian St John Foundation, has raised £1,200 with a target of £4,500.00.

“I’m starting small and hope to get mentors into schools in Southwark speaking about life skills, the importance of hard work, saving money, preparing for

Sharon says her faith is driving the project forward, and belief that it is what Adrian would have wanted.

Sharon muses.

“However I was pleased, as to me it was a reminder that in whatever capacity you can, you must always give your best, and this relates to all people, no matter your race, colour or religion. “ As people we have to do better or more when we can without complaining and that goes for children as well, let’s be the best that we can be, let’s teach the babies. Let’s teach them that pure love cancels out hate.”

Campaign for cats killed on the road to avoid landfill

CAT LOVERS are campaigning for Southwark Council to start recording how many dead pets found by the roadside are reunited with their owners rather than being sent to landfill.

According to the Cats Matter campaigning group, too many animals found by council street cleaners are chucked with household rubbish instead of being scanned for microchips and returned home.

As many councils – including Southwark – do not record these figures, the scale of the problem is believed to be much larger than official data suggests.

Southwark Council says it does scan dead pets for microchips and

reunite when possible, but confirmed it does not record the numbers.

According to data collected under Freedom of Information requests, of the 4,193 cats collected by councils in London more than 4,000 were sent to landfill, with only 75 scanned and returned to their owners.

A spokesperson for the group said: “Cat owners would be devastated and angry at these figures, as many search the streets for weeks or months in search of their beloved pet when all along its remains lie amongst the household garbage like mere rubbish.”

The group has the support of the Green Part’s London Assembly Member, Sian Berry, who has called on the Mayor to make it mandatory for all councils to scan and return cats found on the roadside.

LONG WALKS between stops and erratic bus arrivals are causing travel hell in Peckham, with commuters left fuming that one month after major works started on Rye Lane, there are no temporary bus stops in place.

Gas company SGN started a major pipe upgrade on Rye Lane on January 7, with the road expected to be closed to traffic for another twelve months.

Although the company first advertised the closure in October, many commuters said they had not seen the signs, and traders have voiced concerns there has not been enough support to help their businesses.

Currently, owners will only be able to claim compensation for loss of business after the works have been completed.

One frustrated traveller, Nuala Ginty, told the News: "Since the closure the bus services have been dreadful.

The worst part is that none of the timetables match the buses that turn up at the stops.

"It’s a total lottery. I volunteer at various Peckham organisations so when it’s dark, cold, damp and rainy and none of the times showing to get you home are right, that’s a massive let down.”

Other residents and traders have taken to social media to voice how long gaps between bus stops makes getting around difficult, and how their routes home have increased leading some people to feel less safe at night-time.

One twitter user, writing under the name MoneyKelly, said: "At night there is an extremely long walk to the next

bus stop and last night I got hassled three times on the way to the next stop in the dark. Did no one think about safety and accessibility?"

TfL says it has been difficult to put temporary stops on Copeland Road or other nearby streets as they are not suitable for bus ramps, making it impossible for people with reduced mobility to board.

Helen Lee, TfL’s head of bus operations, said: “We have had to close a number of bus stops on Rye Lane due to SGN’s upgrade of the gas network.

"Despite looking at numerous options, we have not been able to find a location in the immediate area that would be a safe and accessible place for a temporary bus stop.

"We have introduced a temporary bus stop on Consort Road and we will continue to work with Southwark Council to identify other suitable locations as work progresses.”

A 63-YEAR-OLD man suspected of carrying out an attack armed with a baseball bat and thought to be in Camberwell is among the second wave of photos released by Scotland Yard last week for wanted criminals.

Kafunga Kazila is wanted for four allegations of actual bodily harm dating back to May 2011.

He reportedly attacked a man in SW9 by punching him in the head and chest causing him to fail to the floor.

He is then alleged to have used a baseball bat to hit the victim over the head and body causing injuries that required stitches.

On what police have called #WantedWednesday Scotland Yard released the names and images of nine individuals from across London they wanted to speak to.

Among them was a Peckham man suspected of gouging a man’s eyes until he was partially blind.

Anthony McDonagh, 30, is sought by police for three allegations of grievous bodily harm after he reportedly attacked a man, punching him and leaving him blind in one eye.

McDonagh is believed by police to be in the Peckham and Nunhead areas, covered by the SE15 postcode.

Last Friday they have released a further eight as part of their #FindThemFriday.

Detective Superintendent Lee Hill, said: “Some of the incidents in question have seen victims with some extremely serious injuries and we are asking the public to be additional eyes and ears to help us locate these people.

“We often get asked by the public how they can help keep their communities safe, and providing information such as this is enormously helpful both in preventing and detecting crime.”

CAMBERWELL MAN, WHO ADMITTED HE HAD SEX WITH FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL, IS GIVEN A SUSPENDED PRISON SENTENCE

A 26-year-old Camberwell man escaped a prison sentence last Friday after pleading guilty to two counts of sexual activity with a child.

Christian Mosquera-Ortiz, of Lilford Road, appeared at Inner London Crown Court where he was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment, but suspended for eighteen months.

The court was told that the offences relate to a report police received from a third party on Friday, 19 October last year, which alleged Mosquera-Ortiz had been engaging a 14-year-old girl in sexual activity.

The victim was contacted by police from Lambeth and Southwark and supported by specialist officers. Mosquera-Ortiz was arrested the next day and then charged with offences relating to events that took place between September 2017 and October last

year.

Detective Constable Ray Sekalongo, who led the investigation, said: “I'd like to thank the victim for her bravery in supporting our investigation, and the third party who reported their concerns to police."

Instead of jail, as he is deemed a “medium risk”, Mosquera-Ortiz is now subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the next ten years. This prohibits him from any “unsupervised contact of any kind, with any child under the age of 16”, unless it is “inadvertent and not reasonably avoidable in the course of lawful daily life” or “with the consent of the child’ parent or guardian, who has knowledge of his convictions.”

He is also not allowed to access the internet on any device that won't display his browser history or to delete his browser history and must allow police to inspect any of his devices.

He must now complete a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement for up to 60 days and a Horizon programme for 29 days,

designed for men over 18 convicted of a sexual offence ‘who have been assessed as medium risk.’

He is also banned from working with children or adults with special needs, was also given a restraining order and told to pay court costs.

He added: “I know some people are unwilling to pass on information such as this. However, I would ask people to consider how they would feel if it was their family member, loved one or friend that had been seriously injured or the victim of crime.

“One phone call could help potentially

solve or even prevent a crime from happening.”

Police said none of the suspects should be confronted if recognised, but 999 should be called.

Air pollution contributes to thousands of deaths - a health crisis that needs action A

IR POLLUTION contributes to thousands of premature deaths every year, with particular problems for children, older residents and those with breathing problems such as asthma.

In the face of such a public health crisis, it is extraordinary that the Tory government has been taken to court and lost three times on its lack of action, and has preferred to spend public money appealing a court decision rather than putting in place a comprehensive plan to clean up our air.

The last Tory Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, commissioned research on the scale of the air pollution problem, but refused to release the findings, or take any steps to address the issue. Shockingly the research highlighted both the dreadful impact of air pollution on our children and schools, but also how residents on the lowest incomes are hit hardest by air pollution.

Labour’s Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has made tackling air pollution a key priority, and is making real progress.

In April of this year the central congestion charge zone will also become an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) where older, more polluting vehicles will

have to pay a daily charge to drive. The aim is to encourage the drivers of these vehicles, both commercial and personal, to switch to cleaner, less polluting models. The ULEZ will be extended to the South Circular in October 2021, though I would prefer the boundary to be the M25 so that no part of my constituency is excluded.

Sadiq Khan recently announced an initiative to provide funding for small business owners to help upgrade their vehicles, and £42m for London’s black cab fleet to switch to electric vehicles, but we need a

to call for a £1.5billion package to roll out this approach across the country for personal and commercial vehicles, particularly focused on older diesel vehicles.

Older buses can be particularly polluting, so it is good to see Sadiq taking action to create clean bus corridors, major bus routes where all buses operating will be cleaner modern buses.

Local residents are taking action too. Parents at Goose Green Primary School raised funds to install a green screen – a living wall of ivy which traps and

Our Labour Mayor, Labour Council and local residents are all doing everything they can to provide leadership on this issue and tackle air pollution, but we need a comprehensive response from the government, including a national scrappage scheme for more polluting vehicles, action on polluting industries, clearer regulation on the use of wood burning stoves and investment in public transport including rail electrification. This public health crisis needs action now.

A new science report says over 50% of all insects have been destroyed in the last 25 years.

This is the invisible reason for the collapse in populations of many birds & small mammals who eat them. This is a major

emergency, as humanity depends on crops pollinated by insects.

The reason for Insectageddon? Industrial pesticide & artificial fertiliser inundated industrial farming is slaughtering insect populations and meat production takes up huge tracts of land desperately needed for wildlife & insects.

But there are things we can do in Southwark about it. Organic food is not a middle-class luxury. Cheap non-organic food comes with the enormous future price-tag of widespread crop-failure and eventually human extinction.

So, let us: 1. Buy organic food in local shops & markets. Fareshares in Crampton Street is an affordable community organic shop. Check website for opening hours, as it is run by volunteers. Baldwin’s Health Food Shop on the Walworth Road has a good range of organic processed and natural foods. Peckham & Oval Farmers Markets have a range of organic stalls.

THE HIGH COURT RULING IN FAVOUR OF THE TATE MODERN IS A VICTORY FOR COMMON SENSE

AST WEEK, five residents of the luxury Neo Bankside development lost their well-publicised High Court privacy case against their next-door-neighbour, the Tate Modern.

They had sought an injunction to cordon off part of a tenth-floor viewing platform erected as part of an extension in 2016, or to erect screening around it.

Readers will not naturally feel sympathetic. Flats at the Neo Bankside development cost millions, and are out of the reach of most Londoners.

Most can only dream of affording property in such an enviable location, let alone having the means to take a neighbour to the High Court with the help of a leading Mayfair law firm.

The five residents might have seen themselves as David fighting the Tate Modern Goliath. But the means to own a luxury flat in a borough with an acute housing crisis must surely make you a Goliath too?

This should not obscure the fact that the viewing platform did make them feel uncomfortable in their own home.

One resident giving evidence to the court counted 84 people taking photos into the apartment over an hour and a half. Another said the viewing platform made them feel as if they were living in the zoo.

But there is a simple solution: buy some blinds. And this is what Mr Justice Mann hit upon in his no-nonsense ruling.

While using blinds, net curtains or potted plants to obscure the view would detract from their living experience, it wouldn’t be unacceptable, he said.

Indeed most of us do the same to keep nosy parkers from having a peer inside our houses.

When you consider our feature in this issue on the persistent heating problems for thousands of tenants and leaseholders on council estates - the widening wealth gap in the borough comes into sharp focus.

The final verdict is a fair compromise: the views are part of the reason the flats are worth so much. Floor-to-ceiling windows might give an impressive panorama over London, but the price is that the view goes both ways.

In response to the ruling, the Tate says it will encourage visitors to be mindful of the surrounding area.

Despite that, residents are considering an appeal, says the law firm which represented them.

The saga may not yet be over. But Lord Justice Mann’s ruling was the right one – a victory for common sense.

The alleged attack happened on Saturday October 13, 2018, at 6.45pm.

NEW POST OFFICES IN BOROUGH AND NUNHEAD

TWO NEW post offices have opened their doors in Borough and Nunhead this month.

The new branches are based at 20 Harper Road, SE1, and at Kristal Pharmacy in Nunhead’s Evelina Road.

The Nunhead Post Office will be open six days a week, with services including parcel delivery and collection, cash withdrawals, deposits and payments, and travel money.

Harper Road will be open seven days a week.

Michael Monah, post office area network change manager, said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for customers to pay their bills, withdraw cash from their bank accounts, and send and collect their mail at a time and place that suits them best.

“We know how important our services are to customers, and are confident that this brand new Post Office, alongside our 11,500 branches across the UK, will ensure that people in the community have easy access to our services.”

Other post office outlets have recently opened in Walworth and the New Kent Road.

TAKING TO THE STREET TO SAVE THE RV1 BUS

A PROTEST has been called to save the RV1 bus route, which TfL has proposed axing in its review of central London bus services.

The march, to take place on Saturday, has been called by Living Bankside, a residents’ group.

TfL has argued that the RV1, which connects some of the borough’s tourist hotspots including the Globe, South Bank and Borough Market, isn’t value for money amid falling passenger numbers.

However, residents, ward councillors and Southwark Council have condemned the proposed cut, arguing the data used to support withdrawing the service is faulty, as it was collected while the service was on a diversion.

“We believe Transport for London's proposal is short sighted and that the removal of the RV1 Bus Service will cause a greater void in the Public Transport Network in the future,” said Living Bankside’s executive chair, Amir Eden.

“Living Bankside appreciates that Transport for London has some difficult decisions to make due to the problems with its finances.

“We appreciate the need for Transport

Minicab drivers continue charge protests

For London to make efficiency savings, however we feel the removal of the RV1 bus route is not an efficiency saving but a proposal without proper rationale.”

The route is used by older residents to get to hospitals and as a ‘culture bus’, to get to and from world-class cultural institutions in the borough, he added.

The march will meet at Bernie Spain, South Gardens at 1pm before marching along Stamford Street, Southwark Street, up Borough High Street, along Tooley Street and to Potters Fields Park.

LONDON BRIDGE was blockaded again on Monday afternoon in the sixth weekly protest by minicab drivers over a planned congestion charge.

The protest saw private hire drivers block the bridge between 4pm-6pm, before marching onto City Hall at 5pm.

Drivers joined arms and circled the building to protest against a £12.50 daily congestion charge TfL is proposing to introduce on April 8.

Buses were diverted during the protest, as they have been during the previous protests over the past several weeks.

Drivers have vowed to keep up the action every Monday evening.

IWGB's UPHD branch, which organised the action, said: “This tax on the poor will force us to work longer hours each week to get by and will push many of us into extreme poverty and sweatshop conditions.

“The Mayor needs to scrap this regressive congestion charge or levy it instead on rich companies such as Uber, who are really responsible for congestion."

The union estimates that the measure would reduce its drivers’ take-home pay by 25 per cent.

However, TfL has insisted that the

measure is needed to clean up the capital’s dirty air.

Last month, Alex Williams, TfL’s Director of City Planning, said: “Bold action is required to tackle London’s public health crisis. More than 9,000 premature deaths are linked to air quality every year.

“The private hire trade, along with all road users, have a central role in reducing the filthy fumes circulating in our city.

“The changes to the Congestion Charge will contribute to fewer vehicles driving where pollution is most concentrated, while ensuring the cleanest minicabs or those that are wheelchair accessible continue to enter the zone without paying a charge.”

Flying boot

IN 1932, Herne Hill residents came to the defence of a jeweller’s shop on Half Moon Lane as it was targeted by smash-and-grab raiders.

After locals started chucking shoes, boots and even a flower pot at the would-be thieves, the criminals fled the scene.

Bono’s bad haircut THIS PIECE remembers both the Half Moon’s reputation as one of south London’s great live music venues, and the campaign to save it from developers.

U2 is one of the many bands to have performed in the boozer, playing three times in 1980.

In 2015, campaigners gathered at the then-boarded up pub for ‘wear your old band t-shirt to work day’ as part of the fight to save it.

TRADERS IN Herne Hill hope a public art trail inspired by the area’s history will help businesses that are still struggling nearly six years after a devastating flood.

In 2013 a burst water main at the junction of Herne Hill and Half Moon Lane left 58 businesses with losses in excess of £6.7 million, after the low-lying area was submerged with waist-high water.

Some businesses never re-opened, while

others struggled to stay open while waiting for insurance claims to be settled.

Two years later, traders told the News they had been forced to pay thousands of their own money after pay-outs by Thames Water and insurers took months and years to come through, often not covering full losses.

Although most shop units are now occupied and new businesses have moved to the area, community group Herne Hill Forum says footfall has never recovered to pre-2013 levels.

This month, a new artwork, Flying Boots

and Eyes on Fire, created by artist Caroline McCarthy and the Contemporary Art Society, is encouraging people living nearby to visit and shop in the neighbourhood.

The art trail features fifteen steel-cut drawings from Herne Hill Station, Railton and Milkwood Roads, and Half Moon Lane, the roads most affected by the flood.

All of the pieces are inspired by events and people from Herne Hill’s history.

Flying Boots, is a nod to the scuppered jewel thieves of Half Moon Lane, while Eyes on Fire recalls the mothers of

Brockwell Park who wouldn’t take no for an answer.

There are also references to Welsh writer Dylan Thomas, who lived at Milkwood Road, and U2, who performed at the Half Moon pub three times in the 80s.

Artist Caroline McCarthy said: “Early on in my research I realised that there was a long-standing history in the area of determination, empathy and passion; of local people willing to stand up to authority and expressing their love for their community.

“Whether saving a pub or a squirrel, resurrecting a cinema, demanding rights, planting trees, Flying Boots is in recognition of this spirit and the art trail is a representation of the local community’s sense of history.”

Barrie Westwell who runs The Illlusioneer, a 20-seat theatre in Half Moon Lane, said: “The devastating flood was a huge setback, it took over two-and-a-half years to fully recover and rebuild the business, with some businesses permanently destroyed.

“The art trail is a permanent way to really bring together all of the extraordinary and ordinary stories about Herne Hill and its fantastic community.

“We hope everyone will enjoy it from children to visitors, young and old, and encourage visitors to explore everything Herne Hill has to offer, and learn more about its past and future.”

The Station Hall project group have secured short-term funding from the London Mayor to keep the Hall open, but now need to prove that it will make a real impact on the area in order to raise the money

needed to keep it open – and having the backing of its owners, Network Rail.

So far, the team behind the project have put on ‘pay what you can’ yoga classes, an art, singing and creative writing session for people who home-school their kids and £10 Bridge classes, and businesses and generous residents have also made donations, books from Half Moon Lane’s Oxfam bookshop, and a piano from one generous local.

Exuberance and gusto can’t save the Can Can W

ith a rowdy opening of ‘Backstage Ballet’ the scene was set for Phil Willmott’s staging of Can-Can! as we were introduced to the Orpehius Theatre Troupe where Jane (Kathy Peacock) is leaving the ensemble she treasures so much to marry the well to do Christian Bontoux (Damjan Mrackovich), writes Susan Hallissey...

Jane soon finds practising the life of a lady increasingly difficult (she is on a trial run as it were!) and stifling. After an evening when her friends visit, she decides to leave and return to the stage.

This is wonderful news to Monsieur Bontoux (Phil Willmott), the father who felt his son would be marrying beneath him. However, he has other plans to ruin the troupe.

Scattered throughout a clichéd storyline is an abundance of songs and large ensemble dance scenes, and you cannot deny the gusto and exuberance of the performers - The choreography is remarkable considering the size of the cast and venue. Plus, I must mention the divine La Goulue played by PK Taylor.

La Goulue’s opening song in act two is deadpan and humorous and one of my favourite pieces of the show. Another shout out to the awesome Tango performed by Margot (Grace Manley) and Jacques (James Alexander-Chew).

But back to the ‘plot’: In Act Two the now estranged Christian and Jane demonstrate their anguish in a more

contemporary and moving dance sequence, and drawing to a close, Christian announces how amazing the finale will be and he is not wrong. This is the rip-roaring event of the evening.

High kicks, splits, whooping and screaming.

Alas, there were no surprises in this

piece – even the La Goulue and Monsieur Bontoux storyline was less than a revelation. So if you want to see great dancing with a young and energetic cast then go along, but do expect a stilted and dated plot that holds the dancing together like a thin thread and is often unnecessary. It’s a Can Can

In this 50th anniversary production of Arthur Miller’s drama The Price, David Suchet and Brendan Coyle both reprise their star roles as furniture dealer Gregory Solomon and New York cop Victor Franz, respectively, in Jonathan Church’s revival, writes Michael Holland...

Two brothers, Victor and Walter, one a New York cop nearing retirement, the other a successful surgeon, meet for the first time in sixteen years to sell their family furniture stored in the attic of a condemned New York brownstone. Overseeing the psychological battlefield is the wily veteran appraiser, Gregory Solomon, and Sara Stewart as Esther Franz, Victor’s wife.

You could taste the dust from the attic created on stage as Victor revives memories via various items he sees lying around while waiting for furniture dealer Solomon to arrive. Esther comes up and they soon talk of how their wasted lives have all been connected to this place and the dead man - Victor’s father - who once lived there. They pull apart their marriage and their characters until the dealer turns up to make an offer for everything: the furniture, their memories, their lives, their integrity.

It is in this first half that Miller shows he can do comedy. Suchet’s hamming up of the dealer almost has

Coyle’s cop corpsing more than once and the audience loved it. They are very obviously enjoying these roles and are having a good time on stage.

As they dance around each other Victor wants a price while Solomon wants to talk about everything else other than a price while hinting at how used furniture is not worth so much… When they finally agree on a figure, Walter, the estranged and wealthy brother turns up out of the blue to close Act One. After the interval the siblings hack away at their relationship, peeling back revelation after revelation after mind-blowing revelation turning both of their pasts into lies, as they alternately try to crush one

another with three decades of secrets. It almost became a revelation too far and this wordy, shouty second act sometimes became too confusing to keep up. The message was clear, though: the price of making the mistake of keeping family secrets was losing a brother.

All About Eve is all about Gillian

Belgian director of the moment, Ivo van Hove, brings his wizardry to the stage once again with this production of a cinematic classic, All About Eve. Van Hove’s adaptation is high concept and contemporary, that as a result of some very delicate alterations, retains the wit and charm of the 1950s original movie script, writes Rosie O’Connell...

It is no secret that Gillian Anderson generates a bit of a fan frenzy due to a stellar career that reaches back to The X Files and up to new Netflix comedy Sex Education, and my goodness she did not disappoint. Her casting as Margo Channing is inspired, as she brings distinction and grandeur to the seasoned, steely character with ease. She slinks about the stage in silks and satins with such a defiant, enticing grace that, despite not quite being a match for Bette Davis’ quick wit and smart mouth, she brings a fragile vulnerability and consternation to Margo that is just electric to watch.

Lily James exudes all of the faux naivety and duplicity necessary for Eve Harrington’s deception of Margo Channing. James starts out as a wide eyed fledgling, full of sweetness and enthusiasm, desperately following her idol’s every word and move, a role audiences will be used to seeing her portray from parts in the second Mamma Mia film and Cinderella. She is, however, equally as convincing when the artfully manipulative and ambitious side of her character is revealed toward the second half of the performance.

While the film was a love letter to the theatrics of the stage, van Hove’s stage production presents as a love letter to the cinematography of film. Perhaps in an homage to the original film, it seems fitting that throughout the play cameras are used to project revealing close ups, scrutinising the characters and so, blurring the lines of what is public and what is private. Jan Versweyveld’s box set lifts to reveal a secondary, backstage set that, through the use of cameras, allows the audience unfettered access to locked bathrooms and kitchen conversations, that when projected onto widescreens allows for two simultaneous scenes. With poised performances from Monica Dolan as Margo’s confidant, providing a wry narrative throughout and Stanley Townsend’s turn as slick theatre critic Addison DeWitt, the production as a whole comes together to create a beguiling interpretation.

However, in spite of all the set and camera trickery and impressive performances from all involved, it cannot detract from the fact that it is really all about Gillian.

The church with an operating theatre hidden in the roof

T

HERE IS something very special on St Thomas' Street near London Bridge. An 18th century church with a secret hidden inside its roof space - the oldest surviving pre-anaesthetic operating theatre in Europe, writes Kirsty Chilton‌

This operating theatre was once a real working hospital space belonging to St Thomas' Hospital, an institution in Southwark since at least the 12th century.

Named after Thomas a Beckett, whose Canterbury shrine was well known for healing miracles, the hospital remained connected with the church until the dissolution of the monasteries in the reign of Henry VIII, when it was closed down.

St Thomas's survived, however, reopened by popular demand in the reign of Edward VI as a renewed charitable institution for the poor in the local area.

Under successive boards of new governors, the hospital began to thrive again, raising money for the charity through rent on property on its lands and donations from the wealthy.

The current Church of St Thomas' itself was built during a period of growth for the hospital at the end of the 17th century, a few decades before Guy's Hospital was separately built on its current site.

It was both a parish and a hospital church, and the attic - or garret - in the roofspace was created as a herb storage and drying room for the hospital's apothecaries.

Around a hundred years later, in the early 1820s, half of the apothecary's space was transformed into an operating theatre, and a skylight added to its roof to allow in all the light the surgeons needed.

It is these two rooms, hidden safely inside the church, which survived the demolition of most of the rest of the hospital.

In a time long before the NHS, the patients of St Thomas' Hospital were local poor people and they depended on the charity of organisations like St Thomas' Hospital to get treatment for their more serious illnesses.

St Thomas' treated the victims of accidents, fires, crimes, local riots and wars, as well as victims of diseases like plague, tuberculosis, cholera, and syphilis.

Operations took place with no anaesthesia for the patients and were performed in front of "shoals" of medical students eager to see each technique in a real-life situation.

At a time when hospital-based medical education had become increasingly important in London, operations like the ones at St Thomas' always had an audience.

The operating theatre was used for operations on women patients - in the 19th century, the woman on the table would have been the only woman in the room.

The audience would have been large, an intimidating and bloody experience for any patient with no anaesthesia to control their pain.

However terrifying it sounds however, there was also a lot of innovative practice at the hospital.

Some operations advanced and developed surgery, and the hospital's practitioners advanced medicine too, trying new treatments for syphilis, advancing electrical medicine, and offering a very early hospital-based smallpox vaccine trial in London.

Until the middle of the 19th century, St Thomas' Hospital covered the whole site

on one side of St Thomas' Street, from Joiner Street at the Shard as far as Borough High Street and Tooley Street.

Its presence is almost invisible today because most all of the hospital disappeared in the 1860s to make way for the railway.

However, not all of the hospital was destroyed. An old ward block (now the post office on Borough High Street), and a few houses on St Thomas' Street, along with St Thomas' Church itself and the hospital spaces in its roof survived the demolition.

Closed up and concealed for over a hundred years, the spaces were rediscovered in the late 1950s, and the museum opened for the first time in 1962, devoted to telling the story of St Thomas' Hospital and its patients, surgeons, and students.

Today, visitors can climb the 52 step spiral staircase in the church's old bell tower to reach the museum, where they can see the herbs and hand-driven machines used to make the medicines, a cabinet of animal curiosities, pathology specimens in jars reflecting the importance of anatomy, and a collection of amazing 18th and 19th century instruments of surgery including obstetric forceps, head drills, amputation saws and knives.

Visitors at the weekends can hear talks about life in the hospitals, and the operations that happened in the hospital see the instruments in person and learn about how they were used by the best surgeons in London.

PECKHAM RYE were back in league action last weekend with three points crucial to maintaining a league challenge.

The Rye started promisingly, Dean Grice dominating possession and Charlie Eldridge, John Woolley and Craig Parsons all causing problems.

Good pressure and chasing down from Woolley hurried the Lessa goalkeeper into a clearance that fell to Duke Binitie who finished from the edge of the box to put the Rye 10 up.

That was soon two as good work from Binitie to force the home keeper into a save allowed Parsons the chance to score his ninth goal of the season.

The Rye were looking like the team that started the season so well and they made it three when Grice’s header put Binitie through on goal and he had his second.

The in-form striker didn’t stop there and went on to claim hattrick before he set up Grice for his first of the season and Peckham’s fifth of the afternoon.

Manager Alvin Spencer took the opportunity to send on Kam Mitchel, Josh Newcombe and debutant Ben Phillips. Lessa pulled a goal back but were denied another as Rye keeper Mick Holman saved a penalty.

The result sent the Rye up to third in the table.

Sheriff rescues last-gasp point

THERE WAS huge controversy at Champion Hill last weekend as Dulwich Hamlet recovered from two goals down to score an 89thminute penalty and rescue a 3-3 draw with Hemel Hempstead in front of an enthralled crowd.

Hamlet fouled themselves 3-1 down in the first half but battled back and claimed a point when Decarrey Sheriff fired in from the penalty spot.

Daniel Thompson gave Gavin Rose’s Hamlet a fifth-minute lead, but the hosts were stunned by three goals in eighteen minutes as Joe Howe levelled and Jordan Parkes grabbed a threeminute brace.

Thompson struck again nine minutes before half-time to set up a knife-edge of a second half.

Rose sent on Sheriff for Dipo Akinyemi with thirteen minutes left before a cross from Michael Chambers was blocked for what appeared to be a corner. But after some seconds delay the referee pointed to the penalty spot sparking fierce protests from the visitors that saw the game held up for several minutes.

from twelve yards.

Hamlet almost sealed what would have been an extraordinary comeback, as deep into added-time Nyren Clunis ran from his own half to shoot from 25 yards, but the ball went just wide of the post.

Despite the point Hamlet dropped a place to eighteenth in the National League South table, six points above the relegation zone ahead of next Saturday’s visit to Torquay United.

Meanwhile, Hamlet are auctioning the jerseys they wore last weekend for their support of youth charity Redthread.

Fans have the opportunity to get their hands on Quade Taylor’s shirt on his 100th appearance.

However, those who have their eye on Simon Bloch Jørgensen’s top will be disappointed – because none would fit him.

Comeback keeps Peckham Town on leaders’ coat-tails

PECKHAM TOWN recovered from a 1-0 half-time deficit to romp to a 5-1 victory over New Romney in their Kent County League Premier Division fixture at the Menace Arena last Saturday.

Peckham had their opportunities in an eventful first half, including a penalty appeal for Herve Mbongue, denied by the referee, as he brought the ball down from a free-kick.

At the other end, New Romney won a penalty following a trip.

But Peckham goalkeeper Tommy Hobson, making his debut for the club, was an instant hero as he dived to his right to make an impressive save. Despite that reprieve, the hosts were soon behind. Hobson made a save to his left, but from the corner New Romney scored.

Head coach Mary Phillip’s halftime team talk evidently worked as former Dulwich Hamlet academy striker Klajdi Cani equalised with a free-kick curled around the wall and inside the keeper’s left post after Nicky Meta had been fouled on the edge of the box.

The visitors had a man sent to the sin-bin for dissent and Peckham took advantage to go in front. Kevin Dance got away from his man on the right wing and fizzed in a low cross for Mbongue to spin and finish.

Adrian Butler’s footwork in the box then created an opportunity for Cani who shot just wide.

Peckham’s third goal was direct but impressive, with Cani turning provider as he headed on a freekick straight into the path of Butler, who applied a cool firsttime finish with his left foot.

Peckham then put the result beyond doubt when Cani fired a free-kick goalwards which the visiting keeper could only parry into the path of Mbongue, who reacted quickly and netted for the second time in the match.

The rout was completed by substitute Adam Toubal, who fired home Cani’s low cross after more outstanding work by Dance on the right wing had left the tiring New Romney defence overwhelmed.

Peckham Town founder and chairman Bryan Hall said: “We knew we needed to get back to winning ways, and despite going behind so late in the first half, Tommy’s penalty save galvanised our belief that we could get a result.”

The result leaves Peckham Town fourth in the table, with a game in hand on the teams immediately around them.

There might not be the cruel rituals of clothes-burning or vandalised cars, but Wally Downes would have recognised some of the spirit of the old Wimbledon in Millwall.

Bobby Gould’s Dons pulled off arguably the greatest underdog shock of all in the FA Cup when they beat the best English club of the decade, Liverpool, in the 1988 final.

That was Downes’ last season as a player with Wimbledon, and over 30 years later he masterminded AFC Wimbledon’s biggest win in the FA Cup in their short history. The Dons had dismantled West Ham in the previous round, firing in four goals to humiliate the Premier League side.

They fancied another upset, but Millwall are the bosses of this competition outside of the elite. No club below the top flight has won more FA Cup games in the last sixteen seasons.

Only Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea have more than Millwall’s 31 victories in that time.

Neil Harris’ side made the fourteenmile trip to the Dons’ temporary home at Kingsmeadow, but the FA Cup is Millwall’s spiritual patch.

How different a setting to last weekend’s, where at one point Mahlon Romeo was almost sent over the advertising hoardings by Andy Barcham after chasing a loose ball. It’s a club that must have as many ball boys outside the ground as inside, and they were kept busy: Seven footballs sailed over the stands. Jordan Archer was responsible for one straight from a goal-kick, and then planted another into the dugouts.

The fans behind his goal had the lightning rod for their taunts. But that was about as much fun as they would have on an afternoon when Millwall were in no mood to be on the wrong end of an upset.

Shane McLoughlin crossed and Joe Pigott just failed to steer the ball in at the near post, his effort cracking off the woodwork.

Toby Sibbick’s deflected cross looped just over, but by that stage Millwall were already a goal ahead. It came in the fifth minute, after the Dons thought they had dealt with the danger by clearing a corner. But Millwall recycled the ball and Jed Wallace found Ryan Leonard whose touch took him past Anthony Hartigan. Murray Wallace had stayed forward and was at the back post to head home Leonard’s peach of a cross.

Millwall will miss the suspended Wallace against Brighton in the last eight.

So early, the 750 away fans might have thought that, for once, their side would make it a comfortable afternoon. Then again they probably knew better.

One of the problems for Millwall was their inability to make the ball stick up front. Lee Gregory did his best with some clever movement and crafty touches, but too often his team-mates were then guilty of squandering possession.

It meant Millwall invited pressure, but the Dons didn’t have the quality to take advantage. Sibbick was their most dangerous player, and early in the second half he found space before cutting inside on his left foot but firing over.

Tom Elliott had been warmly applauded by home fans when he walked around the pitch to the dugouts after half-time, and in the 65th minute he was sent on. He immediately improved his side, winning headers and proving an awkward presence for Wimbledon’s three centre-backs.

Millwall could get further up the pitch and back up play, particularly midfielders Leonard and Shaun Williams. Both had efforts that Ramsdale saved.

But such a slim advantage always meant there was the chance of late drama. The Dons pressed more players forward, but Archer’s defence provided a steely barrier. Anthony Wordsworth headed well over before substitute Dylan Connolly fired off target at the back post.

Millwall should have added a second late on. For the umpteenth time Gregory held up the ball before laying it off the Williams in his own half. The midfielder had spotted Wallace’s run and the winger was through on goal, but seemed to have more time than he thought as Mitchell Pinnock got back to make the saving tackle.

It didn’t matter, and neither did the manner of victory.

“No one is going to care whether we played scintillating football, in the first half or second half, whether we could have won the game 9-0 or lost it 9-0,” Harris said. “No one cares. All that matters is that Millwall are in the next round of the FA Cup.”

MAHLON ROMEO enjoyed a tasty reward after last Saturday’s FA Cup win at Wimbledon – and revealed who has the biggest appetite in the Millwall squad.

It’s not who you might think, and the player in question wasn’t on the team bus to enjoy the pizzas that head of sports science Laurence Bloom had ordered for the squad and staff.

About an hour after the final whistle a number of Domino’s delivery drivers parked up beside the team coach to deliver the reward.

It had echoes of Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri promising his players pizzas for a clean sheet during their Premier League-winning campaign, and the Italian was as good as his word.

Neil Harris brought his squad paintballing during the first international break of the season, but Romeo said the Lions’ schedule is so mapped out such adventures are few and far between.

But gestures like Bloom’s are appreciated, and Romeo was just glad the cup-tied Ben Thompson wasn’t around to gobble more than his fair share.

“I wish it was a regular thing because I really enjoyed it,” Romeo said. “Naturally it’s Ben who eats lots but he wasn’t there on Saturday so that was good for all of us.

“You’d be surprised, he can eat a lot.

Fortunately for us he wasn’t playing so we could share our pizzas around. I’d have to throw Coops in there as well, he can definitely eat.

“I wasn’t at the paintballing because I was on international duty but I saw the pictures in the group chat and it looked like it was fun.

“We have good routines especially leading up to games so we don’t want to upset that too much. The manager knows what we need at the right times.

“As a team we’re very together, there are no small cliques in the changing room.”

The Millwall squad’s eating and bonding habits were revealed last season when Tim Cahill joined and said he would immediately be joining the Thursday Club, the group of players – including Thompson, obviously – who go for a kebab in Bromley near the end of a tough week’s work.

As Romeo still lives in Camden in North London he gives that a miss. He loves the bustling area where he was born, the son of singer Jazzie B, where he can blend in and not be recognised as a celebrity footballer.

Many more performances like those in the FA Cup and the league where he is becoming an accomplished right-back in the second tier and that might be more difficult.

Romeo, who passed 100 league appearance for Millwall in January, rarely courts headlines or reads them, and being a recognisable face as a famous sportsman doesn’t interest him.

“The limelight isn’t something that appeals to me at all,” he stresses. “The fame thing is not who I am.

“There’s one season-ticket holder called Adam who lives parallel to my road so sometimes I see him on the high street and we always stop and have a chat. He knows some of my family as well.

my family. Performance-wise I may have had a few blips earlier in the season but personally and as a team we have cut those errors out.

“I see some of the headlines but I try not to take much notice of the news pieces.

When it’s positive I definitely have a little look.”

Romeo prefers to take the opportunity to meet his own. He was at Frankie & Benny’s in Surrey Quays on Monday, moving easily around the jammed restaurant chatting to adults and kids, signing his autograph and having his photo taken.

“The fans have been saying how nice it is for them to be able to meet us,” Romeo says. “We like to come and see them and they are very appreciative.

“This is what we’re really about as far as I’m concerned. It’s especially nice after getting a good win at the weekend.

“It’s not always easy to go to teams like Wimbledon after playing Everton at home. Credit to Wimbledon for making it difficult in a tight ground on a small pitch. We were very professional for the whole game and that’s why we won it.

“Going into a lot of the cup games we have found ourselves as the underdogs, which I think is when this club really thrives. The Everton game we definitely

were and we responded.

“People might have looked at the Wimbledon game and wondered if we could do it but we proved we could. We can do both sides of it. We showed a level of professionalism that got us through.

“We’ve got good chemistry and everyone knows their role within the team. We know what different players bring to it.”

Millwall will need Romeo and his defensive colleagues to be at their vigilant best if they are to pull away from danger in the Championship. Last season’s run to the brink of the play-offs was based on defensive solidity and clean sheets, and survival this season will also depend on the same diligence.

Millwall have conceded at home in just one of their last five league games.

“It’s something we’ve been working on for a while,” Romeo says. “Of course we didn’t want to be conceding goals but sometimes it doesn’t work like that so we had to look at where we were going wrong. I think we’ve made big improvements.

“Ads [Adam Barrett], Livs [David Livermore] and the gaffer have all made sure that the back four communicates. It starts at the back, from Jordan [Archer] to us and gets passed along up the pitch.”

At the training ground on Monday morning, Romeo was reprimanded by Steve Morison for not being changed into the appropriate gear at 11am with a gym session pencilled in for 11.05am.

But Romeo knows that kind of leadership is crucial.

“Sometimes there are certain things you might switch off on off the pitch. Little things like that. Moro, Willo [Shaun Williams], Pearcey [Alex Pearce], there are loads of people who are really helpful on and off the pitch.

“Straightaway when we went to the changing the room after beating Wimbledon the manager said it was a great win but now we go into our most important games.

“We know the league is the most important thing for us.”

SHANE FERGUSON revealed Millwall’s FA Cup celebrations were short and sweet last weekend – with focus soon turning to the league and getting out of relegation trouble.

Neil Harris’ side host Preston this Saturday, the second of three games in six days in a crucial period, with Ferguson urging his side to make The Den a “fortress” for the rest of the season.

Millwalll relatively comfortably saw off an AFC Wimbledon side that had hammered West Ham in the previous round to book another home tie, this time against Brighton.

“It was a great feeling after the game, there was a great buzz around the changing room,” Ferguson said. “We knew it would be a difficult game. They showed how good they could be last game against West Ham but we watched a lot of video on them. They’re similar to us, very direct and work hard. They made it difficult for us, had a chance early on but after that we settled down. We were very professional in our performance.

“We knew what they were going to be like. They may not be doing great in the league, but in cup football it’s completely different.

“I thought we handled it really well. I think these games are great. We know what League One is like, we have experience of the small grounds and we like it, they’re great atmospheres playing close to the fans, you can hear a wee bit more than usual. It’s good to have a bit of banter with the fans.

“Last season our home form was unbelievable. We need The Den to keep being a fortress and for us to keep putting points on the board no matter how they come.

“The fans play a massive part for us, you saw that in the Everton game and I think the atmosphere even took a few players by surprise. It gives us such a massive lift when there’s a big Den crowd backing us.

“Set-pieces have been massive since the manager took over here in League One and the Championship. Look how many goals and assists Coops [Jake Cooper] has got from set-pieces, it’s unbelievable. It’s something we work really hard on.

“Me and a few of the lads do extras including shooting with David Livermore. I always like to stay out and do a bit more, especially practising freekicks and penalties. I’m going to keep doing that.”

you’ll see. He does extras all the time and it’s great for him to get the two winners.

He’s been fantastic.

“There’s a lot of competition for places and people coming in for cup games want to put themselves forward for league games. Pearcey has come in and he was brilliant last Saturday, it shows you how professional he is, he took his chance with the performance he put in.”

Ferguson is one of Millwall’s most reliable players, unassumingly moving

past 150 club appearances and being cherished by his team-mates for his work ethic and attitude.

Ferguson signed a new long-term deal last week, which could take him beyond his 30th birthday.

He has had several challenges for his shirt, the latest from Ben Marshall, who arrived in January after arguably the best few months of Ferguson’s Millwall career.

“I’ve been playing well and working hard, so nothing really changes for me,” Ferguson continued. “I can play in a number of positions and so can Ben, it’s always about what’s best for the team. All we’re really thinking about is getting up the table and to safety.

“The club were delighted with the way I was playing but there was no rush to get it done, they knew I wanted to stay and they wanted me to be here. So it was pretty easy, there was no hassle with it at

The clubs’ last meeting was in the Championship in March 2015, a 0-0 draw at The Den. They have met twice in the FA Cup, both times in 1956-57. After a 1-1 draw at Brighton in the first round, Millwall won the replay 3-1.

But before the St Patrick’s weekend clash there are fifteen league points to play for, and Millwall desperately want to pull clear of the relegation zone.

Harris is proud of Millwall’s cup record, with the Lions boss involved in one campaign as a player when Dennis Wise’s side reached the final in 2004, and now twice as a manager.

“Since the turn of the millennium we’ve got the fifth-best record in the FA Cup, that’s a phenomenal achievement for a team that’s never played in the Premier League and only once been in the Championship play-offs,” Harris

said.

“It’s a great record and we have to be proud of that. The run to the FA Cup quarter-final this year has been tough, with different challenges along the way.

“All three games we’ve not disappointed and I’m really proud of the players. What we do know is the importance of the FA Cup to us has been huge in the past and it is now.

“The quarter-final tie will take care of itself nearer the time.

“More importantly over the next three weeks is that we need to pick up league points. The positives of a good cup run

MILLWALL WILL take on Brighton & Hove Albion for the chance of a huge FA Cup windfall next month.

The Lions host the Seagulls in March with the winners heading to Wembley for the last four.

If Millwall knock out Chris Hughton’s Premier League side and reach the semifinals for the first time since 2004 they will receive at least £1,620,000 in prizemoney. That’s £720,000 for the winners of the quarter-final tie with the semi-final losers guaranteed £900,000.

Millwall have already amassed £675,000 in prizemoney alone and have also banked the extra TV and gate receipt revenue.

Big incentive: Lions could bank massive windfall

The latter spoils connected to an FA Cup semi-final fixture would bump up their reward from that stage to well over £2million.

To put that figure into context, Millwall, based on what they pay their top earners currently, would be able to cover the salaries of three new players for a season.

Boss Neil Harris mentioned before previous rounds how important that cash is for the club given their limited financial power.

Also crucial to attracting players is extending their stay in the second tier beyond two seasons.

Millwall host Preston this weekend and are uncomfortably close to the bottom

three with just fourteen league games remaining in 2018-19.

Millwall haven’t won at home in the Championship since the 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on December 29.

“Recently we’ve had some home draws rather than victories. But every point at the moment is vital,” Harris said.

“Trying to build a run at home of being unbeaten is key. It’s a tough division on the road. It’s important we try to pick up away wins but winning at The Den is going to be crucial.

“We’ve got some huge games left and some big clubs to come to The Den that are going to be fighting near the top of the table. There will be some big clubs coming here that have under-performed.

“Preston are one of those teams that have come good of late and are on a terrific run of from. We couldn’t have a tougher opponent at the moment than Preston.

“They are a team that I really enjoy watching, they work so hard and have great organisation and shape. It’s going to be a fast and furious game and a battle.

“Preston have got some very talented players. It’s going to be another tough and close Championship game.”

Northern Ireland international Ferguson, who will turn 28 in July, agreed a new long-term Lions contract last week. Millwall don’t reveal the lengths of their players’ deals, but Ferguson’s is likely to be until at least the summer of 2021.

Ferguson couldn’t even make Millwall’s match-day squad in the second half of last season, and wasn’t a regular earlier in this campaign.

His Millwall career appeared under threat when Neil Harris signed Jiri Skalak, but instead Ferguson knuckled down before winning a regular starting spot in October and playing some of his best football for the club.

The parties had been in talks for a number of weeks.

“I was delighted. If you asked me in the summer if I was going to be in that position [being offered a new deal] I probably would have said no,” Ferguson admitted.

“I worked hard to try to get into that position and I’m really thankful to the manager for showing faith in me. I was talking to him a lot and he was telling me to keep my head down and if I got the chance and grabbed the shirt it was mine.

“I’ve loved my time here in London, I didn’t think when I came from up north I’d enjoy it as much as I have. Hopefully I can stay here for as long as possible and keep enjoying my football with Millwall.”
