SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has a target of repairing the most serious potholes in two hours, while the Walworth Road is the most frequently complained for road defects, research has revealed.

Other local authorities including Cumbria aim to respond “immediately”, while among the slowest to respond was Leicestershire, which gave itself a target of 72 hours, the RAC survey found.

However response times varied depending on the nature of the road network and local

Southwark’s town hall said it had the third highest spend per kilometre for highways in London, and that it was maintained to high road standards.

Potholes smaller than 40mm were unlikely to be assessed or categorised by the council, according to the FOI response.

A separate study, conducted by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), revealed that the Walworth Road was the most frequent target of motorists’ ire, as the most complained about highway in 2017-18.

The council received 322 pothole complaints in the year

the study revealed – but only paid out for any car damages in three cases, totalling £538.

Sue Terpilowski, FSB London Policy Chair, said potholes were a “danger” to road users and led to problems for small businesses.

She added: “There should be simple way to report road problems to local councils, with identified problems quickly rectified.

“Highways maintenance needs to be a priority for our councils, to keep the road network moving for our small businesses in the city.”

NEIL COYLE has shared shocking new statistics at a parliamentary debate on homelessness, revealing that 27 per cent of all who went prison last year were homeless.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP was given the shocking figures by the Justice Minister, who confirmed the rise in people of ‘no fixed abode’ entering the country’s prisons at an estimated cost of more than £900 million.

Speaking exclusively to the News before chairing the debate last Thursday, Coyle said: “This is a gross distortion of where funds should go.

“Prisons are exploding and poorly

managed, with prisoners now more likely to come out of jail with a drug addiction than when they went in and are more likely to commit further crimes sadly.

“The Government is failing to get a grip on this issue.

“The homeless figures are an appalling indictment on all Ministers since 2010 and yet another example of how the Government's wasteful spending and focus on Brexit is side-lining the need to take action on issues affecting thousands of people negatively across the UK. It is estimated that a record 5,000 people are sleeping rough and a further 320,000 are ‘hidden homeless’ left sofa surfing or living in temporary accommodation.

Last week, the government claimed rough sleeping had been cut by two per cent – or 74 people. Coyle blasted the statistic as ‘pitiful’.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has announced further Brexit preparations, weeks after a cross-party panel raised concerns over the impact on the borough’s EU citizens, hospitals and businesses.

Alongside a £2million Brexit reserve fund, the council has also announced an “online information resource” for concerned residents and a ‘live’ risk register which will be publicly available on its website.

As the News has reported, a Brexit panel council report published in January has previously flagged “risks to public order associated with a no-deal Brexit” and accused central Government of a “failure” in negotiating an exit from the EU. Councillor Victoria Mills, Cabinet member for Finance, Performance and Brexit, said: “It’s a very worrying time for everyone, and especially EU citizens, so I hope that we can help in a small way by offering some reassurance and practical support and advice.

“We don't know what will happen after 29 March, but we continue to make every preparation we can in order to ensure continuity of services and support for staff.”

TWO ‘WONDERS of south London’ are among the mini monuments built from half a million lego bricks now on display at the Horniman museum’s latest exhibition.

Brick Wonders showcases 50 lego recreations of ancient and natural wonders of the world, with structures from throughout the ages including from an Egyptian pyramid, old London Bridge, a coral reef and safari scene, and the international space station.

Two have been specially commissioned for the museum; a 1.2 metre long replica of the Horniman’s stuffed Walrus, weighing 19kg, and a miniature version of the museum’s original 1901 building, complete with iconic clock tower.

The Walrus has been on display at the

Horniman for more than a century and is believed to have come from the Hudson Bay area of eastern Canada before arriving in London to be shown in the ‘Canada’ section of the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in south Kensington in the 1880s.

One of the museum’s most popular exhibits, it is known for being ‘over stuffed’ by its taxidermist, as it is missing its species’ characteristic folds of skin.

Also displayed is the miniature of Old

London Bridge. Completed in 1209, the crossing was a main shop, tavern and house-lined thoroughfare from City to Southwark for six hundred years, until its crumbling structure was torn down and rebuilt in 1831.

The exhibition will also feature items from the museum’s collection showing human beings’ fascination with creating miniatures and models in cultures around the world.

15 MONTHS FOR FILMING HIMSELF COMMITTING OVER 30 OFFENCES

A MAN from East Dulwich has been handed fifteen months in prison after he filmed himself committing more than 30 dangerous driving offences on his motorbike - including going the wrong way down roads and around roundabouts.

Twenty-five-year-old Kamal Richards, from Dylways near Denmark Hill, pleaded guilty before he sentenced at Croydon Crown Court.

He was also disqualified from driving for 31 months and will have to complete an extended test to get his licence back.

The court heard how Richards took part in the UK 'Raise it up' New Year's Ride Out on January 1, 2016, an hourlong lap starting in Croydon at 2pm which looped round Purley and

Coulsdon via Reigate Hill in bad weather.

Richards filmed the event from a camera mounted on his helmet and then uploaded the footage online.

The video shows him committing what police say are more than 30 offences, four of which could have killed him or someone else if he had been in a collision.

On his black Honda motorbike he rode into a tunnel against oncoming traffic, went through red lights, and drove on the wrong side of a slip road, leaving a car driver forced to pull up to avoid being directly hit.

Richards was arrested on January 24, 2018 and charged with four dangerous driving offences.

At his sentencing, Her Honour Judge Smaller said: "You took part and committed an offence of dangerous driving in a ride out.

“In the very near future we will be issuing images of those we want to trace, and we will be asking for the media’s support in doing so. We are dedicated to identifying those involved, and bringing them to justice for the chaos and disruption they caused.”

A ROTHERHITHE minicab driver has been jailed after killing a pedestrian while driving under the influence of cannabis.

Adefemi Adebisi, 36, of Wyatt Close, was jailed to four-and-a-half years behind bars for causing death by careless driving at Woolwich Crown Court on last Thursday, February 7.

The court had previously found Adebisi guilty after an eight day trial in December for causing the death of 27-year-old Joshua Hayes.

Jurors heard that the emergency services were called to Romborough Way at the junction with Lewisham High Street, in Lewisham, to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian shortly after 3am on October 1 2016.

Police officers and the London Fire Brigade found Joshua, from Sidcup, lying injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Adebisi, who stopped at the scene, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, before being arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Following the conviction, Joshua’s mother released a moving statement via police detailing the family’s loss and suffering at the hands of the ‘drug-driver’.

Joshua’s grieving mum said: “Words seem feeble for conveying the overwhelming sense of loss and the depth of pain and suffering we have experienced since the tragic and

unnecessary death of our beloved son Joshua.

“It has been a living hell for our family.

We have all been impacted in different ways, each of us bears physical, mental or emotional scars that run deep and can never be healed.

“There will be no more happy years.

Not for us the warmth and joy of a family Christmas, his absence will always overshadow the celebrations we might have anticipated. We mourn the loss of Joshua’s future, his hopes, dreams and aspirations.

“We should not have to mourn and weep on a daily basis and speak about him in the past tense. I just want to ensure that no other family has to feel such intense pain and suffering as a result of the careless and thoughtless act.”

Two previous attempts to bring the case to court and convict Adebisi failed, exacerbating the family’s grief said Mrs Hayes.

“This man is a habitual risk taker... without due care for his passengers, other road users and pedestrians. He could have eased our burden by pleading guilty and saved us years of pain leading up to the trial,” she said.

“It has taken two years and two months for this case to come to trial after two false starts. This has exacerbated our grief and suffering. We feel that throughout this process, Adebisi showed no real remorse.”

Joshua, an English graduate, had been working as a lecturer at the college where his mother ended up taking a job.

A post-mortem gave his cause of death as asphyxiation.

Detective Sergeant Wendy Parker, lead officer in the case from the Roads and Transport Policing Command at the Met, said it had been “complex and challenging” to bring the case to a conclusion.

“Adebisi admitted in court that he had used cannabis multiple times in the space of one week,” she said.

“The public put their trust in licensed mini-cab drivers and expect to be transported in a safe environment when they step into a vehicle.

“This man imprisoned today undoubtedly put others at risk by his behaviour and this case shows the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs.

“We hope it will act as a deterrent in future to others.”

The prospect of the so-called denial of service attacks being carried out by a foreign government has previously been raised by a top council official.

The IT service is shared between Southwark, Lewisham and Brent councils.

“We don’t know why Southwark was targeted,” said Steve Tredinnick of Brent Council. “The origin of the attacker is not known, but there was significant activity from Russia, China, Germany and Ireland.

“But that’s as probably as far as we’re going to get as far as the attacker is concerned.”

Eye-gouge suspect on wanted list

A PECKHAM man suspected of gouging a man in the eye until he was partially blinded is among London’s nine most wanted criminals.

Anthony McDonagh, 30, is sought by police for three allegations of grievous bodily harm after he reportedly attacked a man, punching him and leaving him blind in one eye.

McDonagh is believed by police to be in the Peckham and Nunhead areas, covered by the SE15 postcode.

Police urged anyone who knows of McDonagh’s whereabouts or has useful information – including areas he regularly visits - to get in contact with them.

The appeal was released alongside the names of eight other men that police need to track for unrelated enquiries relating to violent crimes.

Detective Superintendent Lee Hill, said: “Some of the incidents in question have seen victims with some extremely serious injuries and we are asking the public to be additional eyes and ears to help us locate these people.

“We often get asked by the public how they can help keep their communities safe, and providing information such as this is enormously helpful both in preventing and detecting crime.”

He added: “I know some people are unwilling to pass on information such as this. However, I would ask people to consider how they would feel if it was their family member, loved one or friend that had been seriously injured or the victim of crime.

“One phone call could help potentially solve or even prevent a crime from

happening.”

Police said McDonagh should not be confronted if recognised, but 999 should be called.

East Dulwich stab victim is named

A MAN stabbed to death on Lordship Lane in the early hours of Sunday morning has been named by police, as officers say they are ‘working round the clock’ to find his attacker.

Officers say the victim is believed to be 39-year-old Dennis Anderson, from Lewisham.

Dulwich area. It is believed he regularly spent time on Lordship Lane with friends, and at the time of the attack – around 2.35am - was returning home from a party.

According to reports, Mr Anderson was allegedly attacked after getting into an argument with a man who approached him in an off-licence asking for a cigarette, before knifing him and fleeing the scene.

The Met is appealing for anyone in the area at the time to come forward with information that could help the investigation, but has released no details or images of the suspect, whom officers are ‘working round the clock’ to find.

Detective Inspector Domenica Catino said: "We need to hear from anyone that may have been in the area on Sunday

morning who may have information on the circumstances of this tragic turn of events.

"Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could really help our investigation. We are aware of speculation around the motive for this attack and can now confirm that the suspect approached Mr Anderson in an off-license shop before an altercation broke out and the suspect delivered a fatal attack. Our top priorities now are to support Mr Anderson's family and catch the person responsible for this horrible attack. Officers are working around the clock to locate this suspect and bring him into custody."

POLICE IN neighbouring Lewisham are appealing for witnesses after a woman was reportedly held captive by a group of armed men at a Deptford pub on Saturday.

As armed police responded to the call at the Anchor Pub on Lewisham Road around 3.55am, a police gun was “unintentionally” discharged, injuring one of the men.

Detectives had been tipped off by a woman a caller from a nearby phone box that a woman has being held in the pub by armed men.

A car, driven from the pub, was stopped near to the junction with Blackheath Hill where a man in his twenties was shot by police.

His condition was not life-threatening, officers said on Sunday afternoon – but he was under arrest and in hospital.

Another man in the car, aged 21, was arrested and charged with possession of a bladed article. He appeared in Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Five other men were arrested at the pub – but no woman was found. Officers refused to comment further on any items

Detectives urged the woman who made the initial call on Saturday morning from a phone box on Morden Hill, just off Lewisham Road. to contact them again.

DCI Stanyer of South East CID said: “Detectives are working hard to fully understand this incident and our enquiries are at an early stage.

“It is vital that we hear again from the original caller in this case. Officers, including armed police, rightly deployed

urgently to the area following her phone call, and this has resulted in a number of searches and seven people being arrested.

“Whatever the circumstances of the call, it is important that this female calls police again as soon as possible.”

Police also want to hear from anyone who was in the Anchor Pub in the early hours of Saturday morning, or who saw anything suspicious in the area at the time.

PLANS FOR a new Borough office building for a social enterprise which rents out office space to charities below market rents will be unveiled this week.

The proposals, for a new office building on Loman Street for the social enterprise CAN, will be revealed at a public exhibition on tomorrow (Friday February

15) from 2.30pm – 8pm and Saturday 16 from 10am – 2pm. It will be held at 32-36 Loman Street. The organisation said the revamp was necessary to prevent the charities being pushed out of the borough.

Andrew Croft, CEO of CAN, said: “In short, if we want to further our mission of helping charities, social enterprise and notfor-profit organisations by providing affordable work space in central London and prevent their displacement from the

diverse community in Southwark– we need to redevelop our Loman Street building.”

Around 270 individuals work for charities, social enterprises and not-forprofit organisations at the building.

The social enterprise, started in Southwark two decades ago, also has buildings in Great Dover Street and Bermondsey which it uses to let out office space to charities.

GROSVENOR’S £500M plans for Bermondsey’s Biscuit Factory site were unanimously rejected by councillors at a crowded planning meeting on last Wednesday week, over the scheme’s lack of affordable housing.

The scheme for the Biscuit Factory on Clements Road and former Lewisham and Southwark College campus site had been for up 1,217 flats alongside retail spaces and a new secondary school.

Council officers and the developer had clashed over the feasibility of the number of affordable and social homes the scheme could support – with Grosvenor offering only 27.5 per cent of affordable homes, below the council’s 35 per cent policy.

According to a spokesperson from the council’s planning consultants GVA, a “big difference” between feasibility assessments came because Grosvenor’s case would put a negative value on the Biscuit Factory land.

The calculation would mean the developer – owned by the Duke of Westminster - would have to pay someone to buy the land off them, the meeting heard.

The scheme also failed to provide any social homes at all against council policy, councillors were told meaning it would not be suitable for the estimated 25,000 people waiting on the council’s housing list.

A couple would need to be earning £30,000 each to access one of the scheme’s affordable build-to-rent homes.

Residents spoke in opposition to the scheme, with one labelling the proposals as a “brazen money-making scheme.”

No residents within 100m of the site who were in favour of the proposals were present at the meeting.

Ward councillors spoke of their

concern over the proposed application, with Cllr Leo Pollak (Lab, South Bermondsey) raising fears that proposed retail units in the application would draw trade away from the Blue market centre, “segregating rich and poor either side of the railway arches.”

Cllr Hamish McCallum (Lib Dem, North Bermondsey) also spoke in objection, labelling the decision to bundle up plans for a new Compass school building into the application as “scandalous.”

Planning committee members unanimously voted to reject the scheme on the basis of four reasons outlined in an officers’ report, which stated: “Benefits are not outweighed by the failure to provide the maximum reasonable amount of affordable housing, the quality of some aspects of the residential accommodation, and the risk of conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians which arise from the service routes within the site.”

Craig McWilliam, CEO of Grosvenor Britain and Ireland, said he was “obviously disappointed” by the committee’s refusal of the application.

“We have talked openly to many in Southwark on the opportunities Build to Rent brings, but also the difficult choices, often between competing benefits, that must be made to deliver these new homes,” he said.

“We have also consistently acknowledged and sought to explain why the economics of our proposals mean they cannot support social housing.”

The developer had pitched its proposal to “the squeezed middle” such as teachers, doctors and nurses who work in the borough.

It had also argued that a ‘review mechanism’ could be put in place, to guarantee more affordable and some social homes would be built, if the assumptions in its proposals were not accurate.

THE FIRST time George went to speak to a young victim of violence at King’s College Hospital’s trauma unit he wasn’t sure how he would be received.

At the back of his mind, a small niggling of doubt wondered whether the patient would want to talk to him – and could he really make a difference?

Two years later, every day shows him the answer is yes. If given the time, the space and the right approach, many of the children, teenagers and adults caught up in serious youth violence do want to talk.

And, for some, the conversation they have with George could be the first step out of crime, a gang, or a lifestyle where violence has become the norm.

The 32-year-old youth worker is one of six people based at the hospital on Denmark Hill working for Redthread, a charity helping young victims of violence, aged eleven to 24, to make a change.

The charity focuses on what has been described as the victims’ most ‘teachable’ moment, after the ambulance crews and trauma teams have done their critical work but before the patient is discharged.

George and his colleagues visit patients at King’s trauma unit– some of whom will have life-changing injuries - and ask one simple question: “Can I help you?”

This could be simply making a phone call or getting a glass of water. Others could spend the next few weeks or months in regular contact as they navigate their physical recovery, the justice system, police interviews or finding new housing – essentially, rebuilding their life.

Redthread cannot and does not expect to solve every problem that has led to someone being hospitalised. But it can make it more likely that they start engaging with the help that is available elsewhere and stop a cycle into further violence.

“People really value the fact that we come up to see them and that we’re not in uniform,” George explains, “it can be very overwhelming for a patient who have up to fifteen paramedics, doctors and police officers around them. They might be shouting, in pain, feeling at their lowest.

“We can bring them a cup of tea or a chocolate bar, help them make a phone call, and book them a taxi so they get

home safely. We have a bag of clothes for them, as often their clothes were cut off in the back of the ambulance, as there is not much dignity in leaving hospital in a gown.”

George describes Redthread’s work as ‘trauma informed’. The extensive training he and his colleagues have affects everything from their body stance to the words they use when speaking with highly vulnerable, traumatised young people whose injuries might need long-term care.

“It’s about asking ‘is it OK if I come into this space?’ and saying ‘thank you for telling me’, rather than going in and asking ‘what happened?’, he says, by way of example.

This is part of an approach that views serious youth violence as stemming from adverse experiences in early life, and that violence spreads like an infectious disease the more people come into contact with it; meaning perpetrators are often victims, and vice versa.

“Every time an incident happens it has a ripple effect on the community, what we see in the media and social media traumatises, normalises and even glamorises what happened,” George explains, “we have to say, this is not normal. What has happened, it shouldn’t happen to you or anyone one.”

In 2017-18, Southwark had the highest number of knife crime offences in London. The summer always sees a spike in admissions, but last year was particularly violent, with a series of murders and multiple attacks in Camberwell, Kennington and Walworth.

May 2018 was Redthread’s busiest month.

But although the charity has gained attention for helping young people escape gangs, these attacks are a minority. Less than half the injuries Redthread sees are knife related and, more often than not, the young victims they meet have been beaten up in seemingly random attacks.

One measure of Redthread’s success is the demand for its services. 2018 was a record year for the charity, as it expanded into Hackney’s Homerton University Hospital and opened its first bases outside London; in Nottingham and Birmingham.

This rapid expansion has called for a fundraising push. In October, Dulwich Hamlet Football Club announced it had chosen Redthread as its charity partner for the coming season. George, who was born at King’s and is a big Hamlet fan, helped bring the club on board.

“Dulwich Hamlet has a proud history of community engagement and over the years, many young people from south London have been given an opportunity in our youth and first teams.

“It is therefore vital that we support the current generation through awareness of Redthread, who provide an intervention in a cycle of violence and abuse that some are facing.”

But as one young person Redthread has helped said: “The thing is, I’m so scared but deep down I know that admitting that you’re scared is about the bravest and most life-changing thing anybody can do.”

KNIFE CRIME offenders in Southwark will now be tagged with GPS trackers when they come out of prison, in a bid to stop a cycle of reoffending.

The Mayor’s Office announced from Monday, February 18, that up to 100 offenders who have served custodial sentences for knife-related will be tagged with the devices, to try and stop them from going on to committing other crimes.

The scheme is being trialled on overeighteens in four London boroughs with high rates of knife crime: Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham and Croydon. In 2017-18, Southwark had the highest number of knife crimes in the capital, with nearly 900 offences.

GPS trackers are believed to be a deterrent, and help people at risk of being drawn back into a criminal lifestyle or gang environment to think twice.

Their movements are automatically checked against locations of reported crimes, with any significant data matches passed onto the police.

Carina Heckroodt, head of London extremism, gangs and organised crime unit in the National Probation Service’s London Division said: “This new pilot is a significant step forward in harnessing new technology to strengthen the supervision of offenders, particularly those who are at risk of being drawn in to a gang environment and other criminal networks.

“These tags will provide a constant physical reminder of an offender’s licence conditions, encouraging them to comply with their restrictions and

deterring them from further offending and protect victims.”

The news comes after the Home Office announced at the end of January the introduction of sweeping new powers to combat knife crime, including introducing knife crime prevention orders that can be imposed on anyone aged twelve and above believed to be at risk.

The orders will also place curfews and geographical limits, and can be used to limit time on social media. Breaching them could lead to a two year prison sentence.

THIS MONTH the London Mayor announced a victim and witness support overhaul, with £15 million earmarked to create the largest dedicated service for victims and witnesses of crime, starting in April of this year.

According to research carried out by City Hall, victims reported being passed around different agencies and teams, sometimes having to repeat their ordeal several times to different people and left without support. As a result the charity Victim Support has commissioned to take over the service.

London’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Sophie Linden, said: “Being a victim or witness to a crime is absolutely devastating- and it’s simply not good enough that some of them are not getting access to the right support, or are having to relive their trauma over and over again.”

A NEW £17,500 playground has been unveiled on a Bermondsey estate following a campaign by a resident.

Feyi Coker, a 23-year-old resident of Lockwood Square, began the campaign to improve the play area after he noticed children on the estate were playing in unpleasant conditions.

He secured the money for the play area from the council’s Greener, Greener, Safer fund.

The project manager said: “Originally I wanted to change the playground, probably around nine years ago.

“I started thinking about it again on the spur of the moment, because the kids were playing on the landing.

“I wanted them to have a space for them to play that was pleasant and safe.”

He was helped in his bid by ward councillor Anood AlSamerai, who said she was “delighted” to support the project.

A MAN has been jailed for over six years after a terrifying campaign of abuse against an innocent East Dulwich couple, in which he set fire to their address.

Gary Gascoigne, 41, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to criminal damage, harassment and arson with intent reckless as to whether life was endangered at a hearing in November 2018.

He was sentenced on January 31 at Inner London Crown Court to six years and six months, with a further four years to be served on licence upon release.

The court heard he became obsessed with his victims, who were the neighbours of his ex-partner.

Police believe Gascoigne became mistakenly convinced that the 46-year-old woman and her 47-year-old husband had called police following a number of arguments between him and his ex-partner.

The court heard that they had not called police and had been completely uninvolved. Despite this, jurors heard how Gascoigne had begun a campaign of abuse in May and June 2018, in which he threw paint and spat at the front door of the couple’s Soames Street address, as well as shouting sustained abuse at them from

outside and through the letterbox.

The ‘campaign of abuse’ culminated in Gascoigne setting fire to their property while the couple were having dinner with a family member, who was on his first visit to the UK. The visiting family member went down into the property from the rooftop terrace at 6.30pm on June 27, 2018.

He began shouting ‘Fire, fire’ – and when the couple came downstairs, they discovered a fire at the front door.

All three managed to escape the blaze after climbing into a neighbour’s garden.

The Fire Brigade extinguished the fire and discovered that a bottle of lighter fluid had been wedged in the letterbox and set alight, causing burns to the front door, carpet and walls.

Police say Gascoigne was identified after

a neighbour came out and pointed him out as being responsible.

CCTV showed Gascoigne going up to the address with his t-shirt pulled up over his head, holding a small bottle in his hand, before fleeing and hiding down the street.

The arsonist’s DNA was also found on the lighter fluid bottle, the court was told.

He was arrested on June 29 2018 and charged on July 2.

Following the trial he was also ordered to pay costs issued with a restraining order preventing him from contacting or going within 50 metres of the victims.

Investigating officer Detective Colin Scott, of the Met’s South Central Command Unit, said: “This could have been an entirely different investigation had the victims not been lucky enough to discover the fire quickly and make good

their escape.

“Gascoigne’s actions in the time leading up to this incident were bad enough, but to then go to the lengths he did in setting a fire that could have potentially have been fatal, are almost incomprehensible.

“He has now been given a custodial sentence that will, I hope, go some small way to allowing the victims to put this horrible episode behind them.”

Worboys outrage will mean victims have more rights on parole hearings

THE GOVERNMENT has announced a new right for violent crime victims to challenge parole decisions, following a fierce publish backlash in the case of the Rotherhithe black cab rapist, John Worboys.

A new review mechanism will be introduced to allow victims of crimes to appeal to the Ministry of Justice, to reconsider parole board decisions if the initial decision was legally flawed.

Currently the only method to challenge such decisions are through a costly legal battle in the form of a judicial review, often funded by victims themselves.

A report published by the Ministry of Justice stated: “The Worboys case was unusual in many ways but it shone a light on the need to have a more accessible way to review parole decisions in those rare cases where the decision may be flawed.”

A parole board decision to release John Worboys from prison last year following his conviction for sex attacks on twelve women sparked outrage.

It was later overturned by the High Court, following a judicial review brought by his victims.

Government won’t reach its homeless target until 2051!

L AST WEEK I secured time to debate rough sleeping and the wider problem of homelessness in Westminster as co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Ending Homelessness Group.

It was the first debate on the rising issue in almost a year and over thirty MPs participated in the discussion from three political parties (Labour, the Conservatives and one SNP).

Three shocking statistics came out of the debate. Firstly, most people find rough sleeping unacceptable and desire greater Government action but for every rough sleeper there are about 63 other homeless people. They are the 'hidden homeless' in temporary accommodation (including over 2,000 people in Southwark alone), or sofa-surfing with family and friends, or even sleeping on night buses as I have seen in my local surgery sessions.

There are almost 5,000 rough sleepers across the country, but over 320,000 homeless people in total.

Rough sleeping represents about a quarter of the tip of the gigantic

homeless population which has grown every year since 2010. The Government claims it wants to halve rough sleeping by 2022 but, at the current rate, would not reach that target until 2051, some thirty years late! In many parts of the country, rough sleeping continues to rise including by 13% in London and a massive 60% increase in Birmingham last year.

The costs of homelessness are also growing. councils often shoulder the bill, but ill health in this group also costs the NHS massively through avoidable hospitalisation and the higher prevalence of mental health conditions amongst all homeless people.

The police and criminal justice system also foot higher costs. In the last few years, the overall number of people going to prison has fallen slightly, to just over 100,000 but the proportion of homeless people has grown to 27%. Prisoners in England and Wales cost an average of £35,000 a year to lock up (and more in Scotland and Northern Ireland) meaning a bill for the taxpayer of

£945 million. This huge, avoidable sum could go much further if spent on preventative measures upfront but the Government lacks the policies and political will to do so, allowing the shame of rising homelessness to continue blighting out nation.

Brexit also continues to blight our country and, at the time of writing, the Prime Minister looks set to put her same agreement back to Parliament despite its record defeat previously. The Government has acknowledged that it cannot now pass all the necessary legislation and statutory instruments before the date the UK is supposed to leave the EU. Theresa May should be revoking or extending Article 50 but is paralysed with fear of the most rightwing elements of the Tory Party and DUP whilst employers and trade unions make clear the damage being done to jobs. This extreme situation is also avoidable. No one voted to be made worse off in the referendum three years ago and no one will thank or reward May if her Government inflicts avoidable pain on British people.

OOD MENTAL health and well-being is essential for leading a fulfilling and enjoyable life.

Yet many people who live in Southwark will be affected, either directly or indirectly, by poor mental health – with potentially long-lasting consequences for themselves, their family and friends.

While people can be affected by mental illness at any point in their lives – and for a whole variety of reasons – we

know that most has its origins in childhood, with 50% of all disorders emerging before the age of 14.

Consequently, we want to recognise and tackle mental health and well-being issues early in life – the sooner these are addressed, the greater the likelihood that problems in adulthood can be reduced.

Just last week, we announced that young people in Southwark now have access to free mental health and wellbeing support through online counselling service, Kooth.

Anyone aged between 11 and 19 years-old can log onto Kooth.com via any connected device – for example, their phone, tablet or desktop – for confidential and anonymous support, 365 days a year.

Kooth offers young people free and safe access to various self-help materials, mood-tracking and goalsetting tools, counsellor messaging and peer-to-peer support via moderated online forums.

from exam stress and depression, to selfharm and relationship problems.

In addition, qualified counsellors are available to support young people in one-to-one sessions from 12-noon until 10pm on weekdays, and from 6pm until 10pm at weekends.

This is a fantastic tool for young people, and complements the range of services already available to help improve their mental health and wellbeing – providing another option to

get support quickly and confidentially.

ew statistics showing that 27 per cent of all people going into prison are homeless are a shocking indictment of the support system that is meant to protect vulnerable people from harm.

We know that prisoners are disproportionately more likely to have grown up in care, suffer from mental health difficulties, and have low literacy and numeracy skills.

By the time someone is behind bars, they have already reached a crisis point where successive interventions have failed.

A long-term stay should be an opportunity to put this right, but too many prisons are dangerous, overcrowded and beset by serious problems with drugs and violence.

Many lack the long-term funding to truly rehabilitate prisoners with education, psychological and emotional support. Those on short-term stays are even less likely to come back into the outside world equipped to deal with the challenges of mainstream society.

While the Government gets to grips with the crisis, and campaigners lobby for tougher sentencing or alternatives to jail, anything that stops vulnerable people spiralling into a cycle of reoffending is a good thing. Inevitably, some of these tactics will mean heavier enforcement. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced that knife crime offenders will be tagged with GPS trackers upon release in Southwark, as our borough is one of the most affected by knife crime.

The Home Office is also introducing new knife crime prevention orders, with powers to limit social media use, and stop young people at risk from travelling into areas where they may be harmed, or do harm.

These initiatives show our justice system is heading in the right direction. But as long as the root causes of serious youth violence are allowed to fester, the police and justice system will always be left struggling.

On page 9, we meet one of charity Redthread’s youth workers, who give support to young people at what is often the worst moment of their life; when they find themselves in hospital, possibly with lifechanging injuries after being stabbed, shot, beaten or abused by a rival gang, a so-called friend, or a stranger.

Their role isn’t to replicate the work of other agencies, but to try to help guide a vulnerable youth so they accept help, or make a lasting lifestyle change, when other interventions have failed. Dulwich Hamlet FC could not have picked a more worthy charity partner, nor one more aligned with its own ethos.

Both Redthread and the club know the importance of positive role models, true friendship and guidance, and safe social media. Sport has a huge role to play in helping children build this reliance to help them deal with the challenges life can throw in their paths.

This Saturday, the club is fundraising for the charity, and debuting a special kit that will be auctioned off to raise funds. If you’re at Champion Hill, please consider supporting this worthy cause.

Part closure of Champion Hill

I AM profoundly frustrated by the pursuit of the plan to partially close Champion Hill in spite of the large number of legitimate concerns raised by the few people who were even aware of the proposed scheme.

To illustrate the problem, I would love for someone from the Council to accompany me taking my 8-year old son to school in the morning from Grove Park to Tulse Hill. The closure of Champion Hill means that I now have to drive through the already extremely congested streets of East Dulwich or do a U turn in Champion Park (A2216) and join the queue of traffic by Denmark Hill Station. I fail to see how displacing the traffic from Champion Hill, which is a road where residents are well set back from the road, to the existing congested roads, particularly of Melbourne Grove, is helping air quality of the borough. It is especially unfair to the residents of Melbourne Grove and East Dulwich Grove where, unlike Champion Hill, the residents have very little distance between their front-rooms and the exhaust fumes of the stationary traffic.

The irony is that I am a cyclist and regularly cycle along Champion Hill with my 2-year old daughter to Mother Goose Nursery in Greendale and have never found the brief horizontal stretch of road along Champion Hill to be a problem – although I concede that the road is too narrow for cars to overtake cyclists at peak times. A very easy solution to this would be a sign saying: no overtaking of cyclists.

The current scheme seems to be a case of looking for a micro solution to one very small area, just

because one or two well-connected residents have succeeded in making a fuss about it to the papers, whilst completely ignoring the consequences on the wider community. The consultation was extremely poorly communicated – I for one did not receive any invitation to participate and only found out about it through word of mouth. There has been virtually no input from the residents of Melbourne Grove, East Dulwich Grove, Derwent Grove, Elsie Road, Quorn Road, Pytchley Road, Bromar Road, Camberwell Grove, etc most of whom will see increased congestion and a decline in air quality because of the closure of Champion Hill.

It goes without saying that there will be less traffic in Champion Hill if it is blocked in one direction – surely that has to be measured in some way against the increased journey times for vehicles which were previously using Champion Hill. If each user is taking an extra 5 minutes journey time, that is the equivalent of an additional 40 hours of air pollution per hour at peak times (based 480 cars taking an additional 5 minutes to reach their destination).

The paper on the Southwark website refers to other suggested solutions – were these discussed with experts? Can we see what these suggestions were? It is my understand that TFL has already failed to recommend this scheme and yet the Council has gone ahead with it anyway in spite of the major disruption to the hospital users and the increased traffic in neighbouring streets all for the sake of a few cyclists (who never asked for it in the first place). I find it quite mind-blowing that this is being pursued on such flimsy numbers in favour and where the alternative routes are so inappropriate.

McDonald’s rapped by customer over bacon in vegetarian wrap

A DEPTFORD McDonald’s customer was left “disgusted and shocked” after discovering his ‘vegetarian’ wrap contained bacon.

Callum Willis, who is vegetarian, ordered the Spicy Veggie Wrap, which should not contain any meat, from the branch’s drive-thru on last Monday afternoon – only to uncover a rasher of bacon inside.

The mechanical engineer has since lodged a complaint with the Bestwood Retail Park branch over the inaccurate order. He told the News: “I felt disgusted and shocked that there was bacon in there. And I just don’t feel the way [they] responded was acceptable.

“It seems like they tried to brush it under the carpet. I have [had] no response from the direct manager, only the head office.”

In a response to his complaint, a McDonald’s customer services official told Mr Willis that the company places “great emphasis on order accuracy as there is a growing demand for personal preference albeit for dietary or religious reasons.”

He added: “I can only imagine how this has made you feel, please accept my

sincere apologies.”

The branch offered him a £15 voucher to use towards a future meal and “to say sorry we didn’t meet up to your expectations.”

However, Mr Willis, 28, who was visiting the branch on the way home to Corringham in Essex, said the fast-food giant’s response had not been acceptable.

“An ideal response from McDonald’s would be an apology from the store manager, but they haven’t contacted me at all,” he said.

When contacted for comment by the News, a McDonald’s spokesperson said: “We absolutely recognise that it is not

acceptable to serve meat when our vegetarian product has been ordered, and we would like to apologise to any customer who has experienced this.

“We would also like to reassure that we have a number of procedures in place to avoid inaccurate orders, and that, after we saw that mistakes were being made, we introduced a number of additional measures in our kitchens and communicated with all stores to reduce inaccuracies quickly and effectively.

“The policy changes had led to more accurate orders,” said the spokesperson, but he added: “We are disappointed that mistakes are still being made.”

Court finds man not guilty of the murder or manslaughter of Sidique Kamara

KENNETH UMEZIE was found not guilty of killing 23-year-old drill rapper Sidique Kamara at the Old Bailey this week.

Twenty-three-year-old Kamara (pictured) was found injured on Warham Street on Wednesday, August 1.

Umezie, aged 32, from Camberwell was charged on Tuesday, August 7. He was found not guilty of murder or manslaughter after a two-week long trial where it is reported that he claimed he acted in self-defence.

Two other men arrested on suspicion

of Kamara's murder were later released under investigation.

Kamara died on the same street where his friend and fellow rapper Rhyhiem Ainsworth Barton was killed months earlier in a shooting.

Also known as Incognito and SK, Kamara was a member of drill rap group and alleged gang, Moscow17, and had previously been tried and found not guilty of the murder of Abdirahman Mohamed.

He had also appeared in interviews discussing drill rap and its link to violence, arguing knife crime had been around for much longer than the controversial genre.

THE INDEPENDENT office for police conduct has announced it is investigating how the Met handled allegations of domestic abuse made

by Katrina Makunova before she died last year.

Katrina was seventeen when she died in the lobby of a block of flats on Camberwell’s Brisbane Street.

The teenager from Lewisham died during an argument and physical struggle with her older ex-partner, Oluwaseysi Dada, aged 21.

In January Dada pleaded guilty to manslaughter, he was later sentenced to two years and three months years in prison.

The court heard Katrina died after she fell onto a knife she was carrying in her handbag.

The judge had said that Dada was "very remorseful", including at the scene where he tried to revive Katrina.

Dada’s short sentence has been criticised by her family, who have since set up an online petition to appeal against what they described as an ‘unbelievable lenient sentence’.

Her brother, Emanuel, wrote: “Our sister complained many times to the police that she was in fear of her life because of Dada’s threatening behaviour to her’.

Her family have also claimed in the months before her death, Katrina had contacted police reporting alleged physical abuse and humiliation by the previously convicted ‘county lines drug dealer'.

of five Met officers involved in the investigation and supervision of Katrina’s allegations had been under investigation since July 17 last year, but it had been unable to publicly announce the investigation until the end of Dada’s trial.

In a statement published last month, the IOPC said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends and all those involved who were affected following the death of Katrina.

“While criminal proceedings were still active we felt it was inappropriate to announce our investigation, which has been underway since July 2018.

“We have identified five officers whose conduct is now under investigation and they have provided responses to the allegations.

“Other officers and members of the public have also provided witness accounts. We would like to stress the investigation is ongoing, and the fact an officer’s conduct is under investigation does not mean misconduct has been proven.”

A NEW interim chair of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been announced – and he’s taking on the role on top of his position as chair of Guy’s and St Thomas’.

NHS Improvement described Sir Hugh as ‘one of the most experienced and distinguished chairs in the NHS’.

He will take on the position on top of his existing role as Chair of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, serving in both until the end of January 2021.

Sir Hugh’s appointment follows the outgoing interim chair, Ian Smith, who has been at the helm since December 2017, when the Trust was placed in special measures due to its worrying cash deficit.

The Trust had spiralled from a budgeted £38 million deficit for the end of the financial year to £92 million – more than doubling within months.

The Trust is now expected to end the year £130 million in the red.

NHS improvement said the outgoing interim chair had left the Trust in a ‘much better position’. A new chief executive, Dr Clive Kay, is also now in place.

MORE THAN 100 professionals attended a networking evening at Ark Globe Academy where they shared career advice and top tips for success with students from the Elephant and Castle school.

Getting professionals face to face with pupils

The event is one of a host of initiatives celebrating the academy’s 10th birthday this year, giving its students the opportunity to meet people working in fields including government, media, health, finance, law and arts and culture.

Ark Globe Academy’s Head of Student Leadership, Year 13 student Radika welcomed attendees and told the audience how a conversation with an attendee led her to gain a place on an internship scheme organised by the EY Foundation’s Smart Futures programme.

“It was an amazing opportunity for paid work experience in partnership with government offices, and big law and finance companies,” she said.

Margaret Casely-Hayford, CBE, chair of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre jointly hosted the event with Ark Schools chief executive, Lucy Heller.

Ms Casely-Hayford said: “I was so inspired and energised by the young people I met tonight.

“I was very much impressed by the degree of the organisation.

“Also the students’ own exuberance spills over and I can see them being really well-connected in the future. This is exactly what they need to get on well in any industry. Really impressive.”

Irma, a Year 7 student, said the Readathon was “great” saying that “it’s really motivating me to read more and I love raising money for good causes.”

“I’m really excited and I’m trying to read as many books as I can! My goal is to read 25 books,” said Mehmet, a fellow Year 7 student at the school.

Although the challenge is aimed at Year 7 and 8 students, others in the school are also taking part to raise money for charity.

The school’s librarian, Amy Lloyd, said it had been brilliant to see pupils energised by the competition.

She said: “I have been pleased to see so many students taking advantage of our library already this month during their break and lunchtimes and after school, demonstrating their commitment to the competition.”

James Wilson, the school principal, added: ““We are proud to deliver an education with character at our school – we want to bring learning alive for our students and help them set positive habits for life, including reading for pleasure.”

Other plans ahead of World Book Day on March 1st include visits from authors, a journalism workshop and a ‘Battle of the Books’ event for staff and students.

You’re never too old to strut your stuff

YOU’RE NEVER too old to try something new – that was the message of a singing and dancing session for Bermondsey care residents at the end of last month.

Older people from Keeton’s Sheltered Housing and the nearby Anchor Blue Grove Care Home were led by singer Rona Topaz, singing songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s with choreographed dance routine.

The class was part of ‘First Time for Everything’, a programme designed

by Royal Voluntary Service to give older people the chance to do something for the first time.

June, from Keeton’s Sheltered Housing, who took part in the singing class, said: “It was nice to sing. Nice mixing and meeting different

people.”

The scheme is supported by Prudential, a life insurance company.

Dee Davis, Royal Voluntary Service activity co-ordinator for London, said: “It’s been wonderful to see so many people enjoying our First Time for Everything activities.

“Thanks to funding from Prudential, we have lots more exciting events coming up and hope that even more older people, their carers and families will come along.

It’s never too late to try something for the first time.”

The next First Time for Everything event is Having a Laugh! Learn Stand-up Comedy in Waterloo, at WAC, on Thursday 21 February at 2pm – 4.30pm.

Alys is is coming to the Bridge theatre

FRANCES WORKS on the books pages of a Sunday newspaper. She’s quiet and capable, but nobody takes much notice: her face is pressed to the window, on the outside, looking in, writes Michael Holland..

First London revival of David Hare’s play since its 1986 premiere at National

IBITS IS the brainchild of three Swiss brothers and a couple who opened the world’s oldest vegetarian restaurant, writes Michael Holland...

Their latest establishment in Bankside serves a fresh, hot and cold vegetarian buffet that could convert the most lupine of carnivores, writes Michael Holland.

When we parked outside and saw this rather large, plant-based restaurant jam packed, myself and vegetarian guru Fiona wondered how they were going to fit us in. But Tibits is like Doctor Who's Tardis and has plenty of room inside. Plus, Manager Lidija Vegman was ahead of the game and had reserved us a good table. It was explained how we should help ourselves to the extremely attractive offerings at the buffet, which would then be weighed and charged by the weight. Very novel. But this led to some harsh decision making: the stir-fried rice or the mushroom pasta? Falafel or spring roll? Potato and aubergine curry or… Or just have a little bit of each, which is basically what we chose to do. And we both agreed that it was the best thing to do. Mine weighed in at 0.446 kg (£11.60), and Fiona’s at 0.474 kg (£12.30), and it gave us a broad overview of the fare.

All we had to do now was choose a liquid refreshment.

My dining companion, who really is very good, went for a Tutti Frutti concoction comprising of 4 fruits. I could never be that good if giving up alcohol becomes part of the deal, so ordered a large, meat-free Sauvignon Blanc. It was all delicious. I don’t know if the wine tasted more crisp and alive by virtue of its vegetarianism, or because it was just a good wine that went perfectly with the melange of textures and flavours on my plate.

And what flavours and textures they were! There was spicy, there was creamy, there was crispy, there was soft… And at no point did I feel the food was lacking meat or fish.

Fiona, on the other side of the table was just doing what she does on a daily basis without all the excited

oohs and aahs that I was making every time I got another taste of something good.

Tibits is a modern place with a clientele that looks office-based but with a bit of gym thrown in, and with an age range of 18 to 80, highlighting the fact that more and more people are going over to the veggie side. The soundscape is animated conversation and, to be honest, I’m not even sure if there was music playing at all. Tibits doesn’t need it when people come together to talk.

After a catch up we were ready for dessert. Fiona had already seen them earlier and decided what she was having, and that was Molten Chocolate Cake and Sticky Toffee Pudding (0.176 kg - £4.60), while I also had the pudding but with grapes and cashew nuts. Why not? If there are veggie rules that I broke, does it matter? (0.144 - £3.70). I also had an Arise IPA, a citrussy marvel that complemented what I’d put in my bowl. Fiona this time had a ginger, carrot and apple juice and that’s why she is a picture of health.

Tibits works. It is fast and fresh. It is on trend. It is a restaurant for today and the future. Try it and you will love it.

Looking back at the police of yesteryear O

UTRAGE HAS been caused by the announcement that Camberwell and Kennington police stations will close this March despite south London’s continuing violent crime wave.

In a letter dated January 21, the Central South Basic Command unit - the now fully merged Lambeth and Southwark Police - confirmed that both Camberwell and Kennington police stations will officially close on March 31, with their officers’ last working day expected to be March 15.

The dedicated ward officers for Camberwell will move to Peckham Station, with officers from Kennington moving to Brixton.

The closure of the two stations have prompted us to delve into our achieves to look at policing in Southwark from yesteryear.

Oneof the best way to illustrate this is by looking at one PC Harry Cole, a familiar face to many as an old-time bobby on the beat on the streets of Walworth for more than 30 years.

Born in Bermondsey, Harry left school during the war when he was just fourteen.

After trying his hand first as a cricketbat maker, soldier and stone mason, he eventually became a policeman in 1952, serving in Walworth at Carter Street station.

He was to become Carter Street’s most famous cop who was based there for the entire length of his service, from 1952 to 1983.

Local historian Stephen Bourne, who has written a biography of PC Harry Cole for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, said: “Often he was seen cycling through the streets of Walworth with his helmet at an angle, wearing a wide smile.

“When I was at school in Camberwell in the 1970s, PC Cole would visit and familiarise himself with us,” says

Stephen.

“He would try and keep us on the straight and narrow and he was a local personality who broke down barriers.

“In many ways he embodied the qualities of a Safer Neighbourhood officer long before the scheme was launched.

“When I was a teenager growing up in Peckham and Camberwell in the 1970s, our local police stations had reputations for being among the toughest in south London.

“If we saw a policeman, we didn’t ask him the time, we just ran for it!

“In those days you didn’t mess with the police officers based at the station in Carter Street, off Walworth Road.”

Towards the end of his police service, Harry started a new career, as a writer, starting with Policeman’s Progress in 1980 and going on to publish eleven books.

Cole told his anecdotal stories with a unique wry, worldly humour, and the Policeman’s Progress went on to become a bestseller, capturing what life was like for an ordinary bobby on the beat.

In 1978 Harry was awarded the British Empire Medal for voluntary work and in 2006, two years before he died, Cole was honoured with a Southwark Blue Plaque. It was placed on the Charles Dickens Primary School in Lant Street where he was a pupil from 1934 to 1940.

Although Carter Street police station ceased to be a cop shop in 1993, the building still exists, having been converted into apartments.

“Looking at old photographs of the station, which served the community for nearly 150 years, it is hard to believe it had such a tough reputation,” Stephen says.

“It looked more like a small country house than a place where villains were locked up. In 1994 the new Walworth Police Station opened in Manor Place.”

Cole is one of only a handful of police constables who have published books

about their lives on the beat, so information about the day-to-day lives of London’s bobbies are hard to find.

However, Charles Booth (1840-1916), a remarkable Victorian who surveyed in detail the condition of workers in Victorian London, did encounter an officer in Camberwell, and made notes about him.

On September 28, 1899, he conducted a walkabout with PC Young, who was then based at Camberwell Police Station in Camberwell Church Street.

The station had only just opened on June 10, 1898.

Booth’s notes give us a snapshot of the officer: “Young has been in the force for fifteen years, and has been in this section for six. He is a solid, double-chinned policeman; intelligent, fairly communicative, in a district about which there was perhaps not very much for him to say. He is unmarried, having come to the conclusion that a constable’s pay is not sufficient to keep a wife and family on. He lives at the section house. He knew the district well.”

Further investigation at Southwark’s Local History Library reveals that, in 1899, PC Young’s pay was one shilling (5p) a week and in the 1901 census, PC Frank Young, age 41, from Bristol, is boarding with over twenty other PCs at Camberwell Police Station.

“In the 1890s, when PC Young was pounding the beat in Camberwell, the partnership approach to policing did not exist,” Stephen adds.

“Today, the situation is very different, a far cry from the 1970s when, if I saw a copper, I ran for it. Unless, of course, it was PC Harry Cole!”

The London Borough of Southwark (Waiting and loading restrictions) (Amendment No. *) Order 201* 1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that it proposes to make the above order under the power of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

1. Transport for London hereby gives notice that it intends to make the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is to enable junction improvement works to take place on Dulwich Common.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from entering or proceeding on Dulwich Common, between a point 3 metres south-west of the extended common boundary of the Willows, Dulwich Common and Northcroft, Dulwich Hill, and College Road.

Local access only will be maintained between Croxted Road and the closure point, and between Lordship Lane and College Road.

The Order will be effective at certain times between 6th April 2019 and 6th July 2019, each night, from 8:00PM to 5:00 AM or when the works have been completed whichever is the sooner. The prohibition will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs.

4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of: (1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes; (2) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by Transport for London.

5. At such times as the prohibition is in force an alternative route will be indicated by traffic signs via Croxted Road, South Croxted Road, Dulwich Wood Park, College Road, Westwood Hill, Kirkdale, Dartmouth Road, London Road, Lordship Lane and reverse onto normal route of travel.

Our Dulwich Hamlet reporter, Ben Henderson, went to Champion Hill last weekend to see the club’s latest efforts at promoting diversity and inclusivity in football.

The Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust produced ‘Rainbow’ LGBT supporters’ scarves that went on sale at the game.

Profits from the scarf sales went towards two charities fighting homophobia in football.

The ‘Rainbow’ Pride flag was designed by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978, symbolising solidarity for LGBT+ people. The colours signify the diversity that exists in society. A rainbow flag has, in fact, been a staple of the stadium for some time and can be seen hanging behind the goal at the Greendale End of Champion Hill.

The initiative follows last year’s successful campaign during LGBT History Month, which saw the first incarnation of the limited-edition scarves.

Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust board member, Mark ‘Scolly’ Scoltock,

described the enthusiasm with which the scarves were received.

“Last season’s rainbow scarf sold out 20 minutes before kick-off when the Trust first produced them last year. This season we ordered double the amount and another benefit of that is we are able to donate £450 each to both Football v Homophobia (FvH) and the Gay Football Supporters Network (GFSN).

These two great charities not only offer a great support network for those in the LGBT+ community who have faced discrimination but also campaign throughout the football world.”

This year’s design incorporates the anniversary crest sported by the club this season, and over 200 scarves were sold.

February is the international campaign month of Football v Homophobia. The campaign aims to unite supporters, players, communities, grassroots teams, professional clubs and the football authorities in opposing homophobia and prejudice against LGBT people in football. Their work not only enables people to take action against prejudice and discrimination based on sexuality

and gender identity in football, but also celebrates and welcomes diversity in the game.

Saturday’s match programme stated that: “DHST (Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust) is proud to be supporting the campaign this season by donating a percentage of the profits from the limited-edition scarves to FvH to help towards them continuing their work” Scolly added a personal note: “I was pleased that Scott Lawley, from FvH, was able to attend the game against Welling United.

He was really impressed with what a great community football club we have in East Dulwich and I know that the Trust and the football club will be working closely with Scott and the FvH team for many years to come.”

The other charity supported by the scarves, the GFSN, is a voluntary organisation established in 1989 as a social network for LGBT football fans across the UK. The goal of the organisation is to maintain a network for LGBT supporters, to encourage

players missing we were able to almost win against a side who will be playing in the league above next season.

“It’s a hard loss to take but a good learning experience for the lads, as they can now see where we need to get to as a squad for us to achieve our goal of promotion next season.”

The contest got off to a slow start, with Lancers making kicking and handling errors, and the game was further slowed by injury stoppages. When in possession, Gillingham worked through the phases with their bulkier forwards, though these proved to be blunt instruments as the game went scoreless for over 20 minutes.

After Southwark went close to a breakthrough their opponents broke down the left for the opening try, converted for a 0-7 lead.

Lancers put up a strong defensive front as Gillingham played with confidence. The hosts twice held up the visitors on the line, but the pressure eventually told and Gillingham added another converted try to lead 14-0 at the break.

It is so important that members of the local LGBT+ community know that they are always welcome at Dulwich Hamlet and it is unfortunate that discrimination still exists within some football stadiums despite it being 2019”.

The initiative is one of many carried out by the Supporters’ Trust in order to ensure that the club is truly inclusive to all. In a time when discrimination in football appears to be on the rise again, Southwark residents from all walks of life can be thankful that they have an institution on their doorsteps truly leading by example.

First league win of 2019 for Hamlet

DULWICH HAMLET secured a significant victory at Champion Hill last Saturday as substitute Decarrey Sheriff’s goal proved to be the match-winner against Welling United.

Sheriff pounced to make it 2-0 with four minutes left and ensure Bradley Goldberg’s 89th-minute goal was just a consolation.

Nathan Green gave Gavin Rose’s side a fourteenth-minute lead in front of 2,353 fans in Dulwich.

It was Hamlet’s first win in eight league games since Boxing Day, and lifted them to seventeenth in National League South, eight points above the drop zone.

Hamlet host Hemel Hempstead this Saturday. Kick-off at Champion Hill is 3pm.

SOUTHWARK LANCERS coach Joe Brace was forced into playing action last weekend as his side lost 19-10 to Gillingham Anchorians at Burgess Park.

A depleted Southwark fell 19-0 down before a late rally against the secondplaced Kent 1 side.

“Gillingham just happened to get the momentum swings at the right time and were more clinical than us,” Brace said.

“It is testament to our strength in depth that even with nine regular first-team

Despite Lancers being out of promotion contention, Brace outlined what he expects for the rest of this season. “We have set ourselves a goal of getting 21 points from the last five matches and will look to put up a big win away to New Ash Green next week.”

Lancers face consecutive away games before returning to Burgess Park against first-placed Ashford on March 9.

FISHER PUT on a show for their fans at St Paul’s last Saturday with a thumping 4-1 win over Punjab United that keeps them level on points with Corinthian and seven clear of third-place Cray Valley.

Dean Harrison’s side improved their goal difference with an impressive display against the side that they finished fourteen points behind as both won promotion from the SCEFL First Division last season.

Rampant Fisher were 3-0 up by the 26th minute in Rotherhithe after goals from Trey Small, Andy Mott and Rob Brown.

Laurent Hamici gave the visitors some hope with a penalty four minutes before half-time, but that was extinguished with eighteen minutes left when Mathieu Ramsamy added Fisher’s fourth.

Fisher have a plus-three goal advantage over Corinthian, who hammered Croydon 6-0 this weekend.

The Fish host Cray Valley at St Paul’s this Saturday.

She has adapted well to a new position because historically she has played at rightback, but we have moved her in at centreback and she hasn’t looked out of place at all. I'm really pleased for her to get her first Millwall goal.

“The girls will take confidence [from the victory], for sure. I have been trying to instill that into them. I could see the improvements in this team but obviously it's hard when you're not getting positive results to give them that belief in themselves. Hopefully the win will give them belief so we can kick on for the rest of the season.”

The Rye started brightly with Tarique Jules having a headed goal disallowed for offiside and the Fish keeper saving a one-onone.

Kingfisher then saw a free-kick cannon off the top of the crossbar, but from another setplay they took the lead just before half-time.

The second half started with the Rye very much on top with leading scorer Duke Binitie causing problems. From a quick throw-in Ricky Essex sprayed the ball down the line for Binitie to beat his man before he laid the ball back for Keenan Rochester who drilled home a superb finish.

The Rye battered the door but it finished 1-1 sending the game into extra-time.

It was Kingfisher who took the lead in the added period but Peckham responded again and made it 2-2 when Neil Williams found Binitie who rounded the keeper and squared once more to Rochester.

However, the Rye couldn't find the same finishing quality in the penalty shootout as they missed all four spot-kicks. Kingfisher's two out of four was enough to take them through.

Coach Alvin Spencer said: "The team really put in a shift and can’t be faulted. With our heads high we go again next weekend."

Lions draw another blank as relegation worries linger

NEIL HARRIS was seeing the glass half-full on Tuesday night – while Millwall fans are wondering if they are drinking in the lastchance saloon.

The truth is probably somewhere in between. It was clear Harris was trying to head off any criticism of his players after this 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday, a third league game at The Den this year without a goal scored.

It’s that kind of statistic that causes anxiety among supporters that the Lions don’t have enough to pull clear to safety.

The switch to 4-3-3 looked inspired as Millwall scored a breakaway goal at Middlesbrough and then defeated Everton 3-2 in the FA Cup. But the bare truth is this was a fourth

blank in the last five league games.

Digging a little deeper provides no source for solace. The last time Millwall scored from open play and not directly from a set-piece or a move off a set-piece at The Den was on December 8, Aiden O’Brien’s strike in the 2-2 draw with Hull. The seven goals since have all resulted from setplays.

Millwall’s three ducks at home have coincided with Tom Elliott’s absence through injury. Harris revealed on Tuesday night that Elliott had recovered his fitness, but illness denied him a comeback.

Talk of Millwall’s direct style and its merits or otherwise has been an almost constant in Harris’ time in charge.

That clearly irks the manager, because unprompted on Tuesday night he brought it up. “There’s been an element of people saying, ‘we play too direct’. Well direct has been good for

us, ever since I’ve been at the football club, since 1999. It’s been very effective and we’ve been very difficult to play against.

“We’ve adapted slightly and we’ve passed the ball really well. We look a really good Championship team at times. But we’ve not been able to find the back of the net.

“I have to find the balance between the two. Sometimes you have to put the onus on the players and say, fellas we can work all week on it and have a game plan, we can coach you but you have to show those moments of quality. They have to do it regularly in training and transfer that to the games.

“Moving forward we’ll score goals.”

There’s no doubt opponents are working far harder to defend setpieces against Millwall, it’s just a surprise it’s taken this long. Michael Hector was a former team-mate of Jake Cooper’s at Reading and he

largely had the better of the pair’s battle. Steve Bruce once scored nineteen goals in a single season from centre-back for Manchester United.

He knew how to be a threat and knows as a manager what’s needed to counter it. He would have been pleased with Hector’s performance.

At the other end Millwall are at least getting it right. After just one clean sheet in their first fourteen league games of the season, they have five in their last seventeen. But, ironically, the two goals they have conceded in their last four league games have come from opposition set-pieces.

Shaun Hutchinson looks back to his best, and produced several timely interventions against Wednesday. His reading of the game is never in doubt.

Millwall most threatened. After a dull first half that was only notable for Jed Wallace’s free-kick straight at goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, both teams were more attacking forces in the second period.

Wednesday’s improvement was mainly down to the relocation of Barry Bannan to central midfield with George Boyd coming on and playing on the left of midfield. Just before half-time Bannan had weighted a lovely ball to Liam Palmer and Hutchinson made his first decisive contribution by clearing with Lucas Joao ready to swing a boot.

The Owls were immediately a better side with Bannon orchestrating and Boyd sniping.

Three minutes into the second half Boyd found Morgan Fox who crossed and after Joao wiggled shooting room Jordan

Archer was well-stationed to save.

Moments later it was down the right that Millwall almost reaped reward.

Aiden O’Brien did well to steer a header from Wallace’s cross on goal but Westwood had his near post covered.

Archer saved Adam Reach’s shot from outside the box before O’Brien snapped in an effort that Westwood didn’t know a lot about as the ball bounced off him to safety.

A low-key contest had its flashpoint when Steven Fletcher caught Shaun Williams late, but just as things looked like they could kick off referee Tim Robinson was on the scene issuing a yellow card that both sides accepted. Certainly Fletcher, who could have seen more severe punishment.

The chances were coming regularly now, but it would have been harsh on Millwall had Reach’s cross drifted inside the far post after it had sailed over Hector and Cooper in the box.

Millwall’s best chances would come in the last fifteen minutes, but two substitutes were the culprits in not taking them.

Maybe a younger Steve Morison would have gobbled up the opportunity that came his way in the 79th minute, but after running in behind Jordan Thorniley and with just Westwood to beat, though from a narrowing angle, he sliced well wide at the near post.

Morison then headed Lee Gregory’s cross back inside

to Ben Marshall, whose header was cleared off the line by Thorniley.

In the third minute of injury-time Fred Onyedinma robbed Palmer of possession wide on the left and surged towards goal with support players arriving. With the home fans anticipating a set-up pass or a shot, Onyedinma’s composure instead deserted him and he stood on the ball. There were groans around The Den. It could have got much worse. In the last seconds of added-time, Fletcher turned in the box and his shot seemed destined for the top corner. Archer didn’t move, but neither did the net as the ball found the away stand.

Relief then that it wasn’t another late goal denying them. But plenty of questions about how they solve their goal drought as they continue to linger uncomfortably close to the relegation zone.

Boss dismisses 'giants' tag

NEIL HARRIS doesn't buy into the notion that Millwall are the giants AFC Wimbledon will be aiming to cut down to size when the sides clash in the fifth round of the FA Cup this Saturday.

That was how Dons boss Wally Downes described the Lions after the draw, but Harris believes there is a far bigger gap between his side and Everton, whom they conquered in the last round, than Millwall and the League One club.

The sides are aiming for a potentially lucrative quarter-final tie when they meet at Kingsmeadow.

"I think it’s slightly different," Harris said. "I don’t think we’re the powerhouse that Everton were coming to The Den in Wimbledon’s eyes. We certainly don’t see it like that.

"It’s a team we’ve come up against in previous seasons so we know each other. It’s all about the prize – a quarterfinal draw. That’s the attraction for both teams, it’s not about Wimbledon causing an upset by beating a team in a league above. It’s just about getting through.

"That’s what the players are playing for and what will drive them on, the chance to play in an FA Cup quarterfinal.

"Yes we can talk about how proud and privileged we are from previous

years. I watched QPR-Portsmouth the other night and QPR are in the fifth round for the first time in 22 years – that’s unbelievable. We’ve done it every few years for a period.

"We take it for granted getting to the later stages of the FA Cup but it’s an unbelievable achievement. That’s what we’ve got to aim for.

"Playing Wimbledon in the fifth round of the FA Cup, you have to earn that right to be in the next round. You have to earn that by physically and mentally competing and having that quality. We certainly have the quality to win the game and we have to make sure that we’ve got the right mentality and we approach the game in the right manner.

"The prize that awaits is an unbelievable opportunity in the last eight of the FA Cup. We look forward to it and I’ll be really excited come the day to have that opportunity."

Harris will be without the cup-tied Ben Thompson, Ben Marshall and Fred Onyedinma. Tom Elliott could face his former club.

NEIL HARRIS has admitted that the futures of some Millwall players will depend on whether the club retain their Championship status.

The Lions have ten senior players due to be out of contract in June. Millwall have offered a contract to Lee Gregory, and talks continue with several others.

Harris revealed there are yet to be decisions made on a number of players, with each individual situation complicating matters.

Gregory, at the age of 30, knows he probably has just one big move left in his

career and he could pocket a significant signing-on fee if he leaves on a free transfer.

James Meredith, a regular last season, has been out of the squad recently and will be 31 when this season ends. Conor McLaughlin and Ryan Tunnicliffe could also seek regular football elsewhere.

The likes of Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper will also attract the attention of bigger sides if Millwall go down.

Asked if what division Millwall are in next season will influence players’ futures, Harris said: “From the players' perspective, yeah.

He added: “We've had a busy period over the transfer window, bringing in Alex [Pearce] and Ben [Marshall] and trying to add to the squad.

“Now players are coming out of contract. Some are happy to be out of contract, some want new contracts and some are unsure. As a club we're quite similar: we want some to stay and are unsure on some whether we want them to be with us or whether they want to be with us.

“That's not in a negative way at all - that's just football business.

“I've had really good and honest conversations with my players, so they always know my thoughts. We just take one step at a time. We've got some good younger players all tied down to longer contracts, that's also important.”

Of more immediate concern for Millwall is Saturday’s fifth-round FA Cup clash against AFC Wimbledon at

Kingsmeadow.

Lions midfielder Ryan Leonard warned the Dons will be buoyed by knocking out West Ham in the last round.

“I’ve been there a few times and it’s not an easy place to play,” Leonard said. “It’s a tight stadium and their fans get behind them really well.

“It’s a local game and it’s going to be a very interesting game.

“I’ve played with a couple of their players over the years so I know their strengths and weaknesses. As a team you go into every game with a different tactic.

They’ll probably go into it confident after beating West Ham in the last round that they can get the victory.

“It’s going to be a really intriguing game with both teams fancying their chances.”

MILLWALL ARE under no extra pressure to secure FA Cup prize money this weekend – because a last-eight spot is a prize in itself.

That’s according to Lions boss Neil Harris, who has seen his side secure £315,000 from going through two rounds so far.

Millwall will bank another £360,000 if they defeat AFC Wimbledon this Saturday – with the prospect of a quarter-final clash at the likes of Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge further boosting the coffers.

The prize money on offer for the winners of a last-eight tie is £720,000. With the likes of Doncaster, Swansea and Bristol City potential quarter-final opponents, that sum isn’t out of reach.

But first Millwall have to negotiate the Kingsmeadow clash on Saturday.

“Just what we’ve achieved so far is a massive effort and a big windfall for the club,” Harris said. “We’ve had a Sunday TV slot with the overseas rights and the Everton one as well.

“We’ve had that prize money and good crowd attendances. We’ve made a lot of money so far.

“There’s more prize money at stake and it’s really important for us, looking forward to trying to recruit in the summer. Every penny counts.

“It’s not something the players will be considering but the club certainly is. It doesn’t put an extra pressure on us – the pressure is on us to want to be in the quarter-final.”

Meanwhile yesterday, after we went to press, Millwall were expected to confirm a new longterm deal for Shane Ferguson.
