SOUTHWARK COUNCIL could pay for the visa applications of its EU workers, after a cross-party panel published a string of

recommendations for managing Brexit.

The move would follow other local authorities such as Islington Council, which has agreed to reimburse its EU workers the £65 cost for applying for settled status.

AFTER THE BREXIT VOTE: How is Southwark affected?

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL should create a one-off fund to support vulnerable residents through Brexit, a cross-party panel has recommended, just a day prior to the government’s historic defeat on the deal.

Aa slew of recommendations proposed by the Southwark Brexit Panel to be discussed at Cabinet next week include paying for settled status visas for EU council workers, publishing the Council’s Brexit contingency plans, and to “identify and assess the risks to public order associated with a no-deal Brexit.”

It also welcomed a separate proposal to create a £2 million ‘Brexit Risk Reserve’ fund, as well as a £300,000 sum to “cover immediate cost pressures” because of Brexit.

The £300,000 would also cover the cost of acting on the panel’s recommendations if they are approved.

The panel, which was established in July, has called on the cabinet to “strongly make the case” that Southwark would be better off if the UK were to remain the European Union.

In a foreword to recommendations, Cllr Victoria Mills, Cabinet member for Finance, Performance and Brexit and chair of the Brexit panel accused the government of a “huge failure” to negotiate a wellprepared, well-resourced exit from the EU. She said: “Local government concerns

For education

Professor Stephen Bailey, Deputy Vice Chancellor of London South Bank University, raised fears with councillors that Brexit could make it harder for the institution to retain EU students and staff, as well as bid for EU funding. The university did not see “any positive opportunities from the UK leaving the EU,” the session found.

For health

Health is a particular concern for the borough because of its world-class health services, found the panel. Professionals said the lack of time to plan “could have an impact on patient safety” if there is a no-deal, which would also have significant consequences for the supply of medicines. The impact on hospital staffing was also raised, with an analysis from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust finding a 63 per cent fall in net EU recruitment in 2016/17.

For EU citizens

Expert witnesses raised concerns for the borough’s sizeable Latin American population, particularly around Elephant and Castle, many of whom have EU passports. Concerns were also raised about the vulnerability of some Latin American residents who have an uncertain immigration status and are unable to speak English.

The evidence gathered in sessions covering employment, education, healthcare and the rights of EU citizens “overwhelmingly supported the UK and Southwark remaining in the EU,” Cllr Mills said.

However, Cllr Mills added that there was “currently nothing we as a council can do to change the outcome of the 2016 EU Referendum.”

The eighteen recommendations would have to be approved by Cabinet, which is due to meet on Tuesday (January 22).

An associated report summarising the evidence given by local ‘expert witnesses’ at the panel’s evidence sessions highlights a catalogue of fears about the negative impact of Brexit.

The news came a day prior to Tuesday’s ‘meaningful vote’ in the House of Commons on the negotiated Brexit deal, which suffered a calamitous defeat. MPs roundly rejected the deal by 432 to 202, including all three of the borough’s MPs the worst Parliamentary defeat in the modern era.

72.3 per cent of Southwark voted to remain in the European Union at the 2016 Referendum, with 41,000 non-Irish EU citizens living in the borough.

52% want People’s Vote

AS THE historic Brexit vote loomed on Tuesday night, the News asked its readers in a snap online poll what they thought was the best option for dealing with the Brexit deadlock.

Faced with the choices of backing May’s deal, supporting a ‘People’s Vote’ and going for a No Deal Brexit, just over half our readers backed a People’s Vote.

However, a sizeable proportion would support a No Deal Brexit, with just over a third of our readers backing that option in our poll.

The remaining 12% of 180 respondents said they would

back May’s negotiated deal – the most unpopular option of the three.

Nearly three quarters of voters in Southwark - 72.3% backed remain in the 2016 referendum.

As the News went to press, the government was facing the prospect of a no-confidence vote after its Brexit deal suffered the worst defeat in modern political history. All three of the borough MPs voted the deal down. The UK is due to leave the European Union on March 29 – but the government’s heavy defeat has raised the prospect of Article 50 being extended, meaning Brexit could be delayed.

THE OUTSPOKEN Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP has often criticised his party’s line on Brexit, publicly backing a ‘People’s Vote’ and campaigning to stay in the EU.

Speaking in the five-day Parliamentary debate on the Withdrawal Agreement ahead of Tuesday’s vote, Mr Coyle said: “Sadly, I have already seen damage in my community since the referendum. I have even shown constituents around this place [Parliament]— most recently Aaron - who have been laid off as a consequence of the result.

“Locally, not one sector or employer has said anything would get better if the Government won the vote on Tuesday.”

He has criticised Mrs May’s proposals as a ‘Hobson’s choice’ and has said that if Brexit does happen, the UK should be a member of the European Economic Area (EEA).

Separately the MP also raised a point-of-order about proxy voting, after heavily pregnant Tulip Siddiq, MP for Hampstead and Kilburn, had to delay her caesarean to vote on May’s deal.

“I still receive letters and emails every single day from constituents who are profoundly concerned and anxious about Brexit; including from a majority of constituents who simply want the UK to stay in the EU.” She has also called the deal “fundamentally unstable” and has argued that Theresa May should resign and call a general election if she cannot get the deal through Parliament.

The Grafton Ballroom, on Village Way, has received a flurry of nominations from dancers supporting their bid to be crowned 2019’s winner of the Southwark Blue Plaque scheme, run jointly by Southwark News and Southwark Heritage Association.

URGENT PROBE LAUNCHED AFTER HOSPITAL BABY DEATH

AN URGENT probe has been launched at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital following the death of a three-month-old.

Aksharan Sivaruban, who was born with a congenital heart problem, had been due to undergo a hernia repair

operation at the hospital on December 12.

Tragically the baby boy died from asphyxia because of a “displaced” breathing tube, according to the results of a provisional post-mortem.

At a hearing at London Inner South Coroner’s Court on Monday January 7, Senior Coroner Andrew Harris did not issue a ‘prevention of future deaths’ report after being reassured that the

hospital had taken “all the necessary steps” in response to the tragedy.

Written statements about the events leading up to Aksharan’s death have been taken by St Thomas’ Hospital from sixteen staff who were someway involved in his case.

The News was unable to contact the family for comment.

Foundation Trust spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the family of Aksharan Sivaruban after their tragic loss.

“This was an unexpected death, which has shocked us all deeply.”

The Trust confirmed that an investigation had been urgently launched into the cause of the death at the same time as it was referred to the coroner.

“We referred it to the coroner immediately, in addition to starting our own internal investigation, so that any findings can be acted on as soon as possible,” the spokesperson said.

“We cannot comment any further while the coroner carries out his investigation.”

A full inquest is expected to be heard in August, the coroner’s office told the News.

THE LONG-STANDING publicans of Rotherhithe’s China Hall closed their doors on Tuesday night – marking the end of a thirtyfive years stint serving pints to the local community.

As the News reported in December, landlords Mick and Linda Norris had faced the prospect of being turfed out of their business and their flat upstairs on Christmas Eve, after the developer Hamna Wakaf Ltd took over the site’s lease.

Regular customers, friends and family gathered to raise a glass, bidding farewell to the traditional boozer on Lower Road and to see off the landlords, thought to be the longest-serving in the borough.

Landlord Mick, 70, told the News: “It’s the end of an era for us.” Linda added: “It’s quite overwhelming, really.”

The couple were involved in a costly court battle with the developer, after it obtained the freehold from Punch Taverns and offered the couple a lease that was double the amount they were previously paying.

“We had to give the fight up because of the money”, said Linda. “They tried to make it as hard for us as possible. It was very hard because we never saw them and it’s all done through solicitors.”

Husband Mick also had to have his leg amputated last year, making it even more difficult for the couple to battle to keep their home and business.

However, the family had to negotiate with the developers over the festive period to not be made homeless on Christmas Eve. Linda said: “It was going to be Christmas Eve, then Simon Hughes asked if we could stay until January 7.

But then it turned out the builders weren’t handing over the keys [to their new home] until the 17th.”

The News could not find contact details for Hamna Wakaf Ltd, based on the Isle of Man, to ask them for comment.

Paying tribute to the publicans, former MP Simon Hughes said: “I think I’m right in saying that they are the longest serving family looking after any pub in the borough.

“We owe them lots more than we could ever give back.”

Toni-Marie, who has worked at the pub for nearly four years, said: “You won’t find another old school pub like this one.”

The 25-year-old added: “This is my second home. They [Mick and Linda] have helped me so much, and God knows how much they’ve helped other people. They’re the greatest family I’ve ever met.”

The south-east London branch of Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has previously successfully campaigned for the site to be listed as an “asset of community value” which would have to be considered in a future planning application.

However the future of the historic site, where a pub has been for nearly 300 years, is not yet clear.

Most of the ground floor is alight as well as a small part of the basement and first floor.

Dawn drugs raids TWELVE PEOPLE were arrested on Wednesday morning after dawn raids targeting ‘drug dealing and its associated violent activity in Peckham’.

Police from Southwark’s gangs unit arrested eleven men aged between eighteen and 48, and one woman, aged 31, on suspicion of drug supply offences, who are all in custody in a police station in south London.

Camera at tunnel TRANSPORT FOR London has announced that new cameras are being introduced in the Rotherhithe Tunnel.

It said the cameras were being introduced to increase safety and deter vehicles that don’t meet the safety restrictions from using the route. The cameras will be introduced in early February.

TEENAGER KATRINA Makunova died after falling on a knife she was carrying in her handbag, the Old Bailey heard last week, as her boyfriend Camberwell’s Oluwaseyi Dada pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Twenty-one-year-old Dada, from Brisbane Street in SE5, was arrested on suspicion of murdering his seventeen-year-old girlfriend from Lewisham on Friday, July 13, 2018.

Shortly after noon the day before, police had been called to the block of flats where Dada lived and found him giving CPR to Katrina, who was pronounced dead at the scene at 13.02pm.

Last Wednesday, January 9, the court heard Dada and Katrina had been in a relationship that had deteriorated into what police described as a 'feud' with veiled threats and insults thrown back and forth over social media.

On Thursday, July 12, Katrina and Dada encountered each other on the ground floor lobby of his block and a physical struggle ensued with both falling over.

Katrina died after a knife she was carrying pierced through her handbag and stabbed her in the chest as she fell, the court heard.

Catino of the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: "A young woman has lost her life and my thoughts are with her family and friends, who have been devastated by Katrina's death.

"This is another young person who has been killed as a result of a knife and we need our communities to work with the police to end this scourge."

Dada will be sentenced on Tuesday, January 29.

A MAN from Old Kent Road was among eight jailed last week for violently robbing £280,000 worth of luxury watches from their victims.

Serewo Gwanzura, aged 23, from Old Kent Road, was sentenced to eleven years in prison for his part in the crime spree at Kingston Crown Court on Tuesday, January 8, after a trial at Iselworth Crown Court.

Not all members of the gang were involved in each incident and Gwanzura was handed his sentence for three offences.

Police say various members of the gang took part in a total of fourteen robberies between May and November 2017 in the West End, Mayfair and Knightsbridge, through intimidation, threats and serious assaults.

The gang also carried out an aggravated burglary in Knightsbridge where residents were left barricaded in their rooms after the gang forced their way in.

Also jailed was Lewisham's Ziyad AlDaher, aged 28, from Brockley Road, sentenced for nine offences and given a ten-and-a-half year term. He was sentenced as a dangerous offender, and therefore is subject to patrol board approval with a five year extension before he can be released.

In total, the gang of eight will spend 54 years in prison, with Mohammed Chaad, aged 20, from Handley Grove in Cricklewood, Abdelhakim Naili, aged nineteen, from Westfields Road in Ealing, Damien Pates, 21, from Rabournmead Drive in Northolt, and Khaled Guehis, aged 25, from Loveridge Road in Camden all jailed.

Members of the gang even befriended some victims on their way home after a night out before assaulting them and then attempting to storm their Knightsbridge home at 5.20am where they stole two watches after threatening the inhabitants with bottles and a knife.

The gang were successfully prosecuted after CCTV camera trawls and the bravery of victims, many of whom were visitors to the UK and no longer in the country, giving evidence via video link in court.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has launched a £140,000 fund for residents’ events commemorating the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower in 2020.

The historic ship set sail from Rotherhithe in July 1620, with its captain and part-owner, Christopher Jones, buried in St Mary’s Churchyard.

The council, alongside British Land and United St Saviour’s Charity, have jointly established the Southwark Mayflower 400 Grants Fund to fund local projects to mark the all-important anniversary.

Cllr Rebecca Lury, Deputy Leader of Southwark Council, said: “I am delighted to open the first round of Mayflower 400 funding and welcome local people to join the global celebration of Southwark’s history with the Mayflower.

“I believe the pursuit of the universal concepts of freedom, liberty and justice are just as relevant now as they were when the ship’s Captain, Christopher Jones, sailed the Mayflower from his home in Rotherhithe, carrying people escaping persecution to America in 1620.

“We hope this funding will help bring the story of the Mayflower to generations to come and that the community connections established throughout Southwark’s celebrations, will form the foundation of many friendships and future activities.”

Events running from November 2019 – November 2020 are being organised to mark the anniversary, including in the Netherlands and United States.

The council has invited applications to the fund from community groups, tenants and residents associations and other interested parties.

Projects and events should highlight the Mayflower’s heritage and highlight its story for both a local and international audience.

People working on smaller projects can apply for grants of up to £1,000, with bigger projects eligible for larger sums.

All initiatives have to include a live event or activity to take place in the lead up to the anniversary of the Mayflower sailing in November 2020, said the council.

A MAN who killed a Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust doctor in a collision in January 2017 after failing to clear frost from his windscreen has been jailed.

Alexander Fitzgerald, 26, of Selwood Road, Essex, was handed a ten-month sentence behind bars for careless driving at Kingston Crown Court last Friday, January 11.

He was handed a further four-and-a-half sentence for causing death by driving uninsured, to be served concurrently.

He had previously pleaded guilty to both offences at an earlier hearing.

Fitzgerald was also disqualified from driving for 23 months and ordered to take a re-test at the end of his disqualification period.

Fitzgerald collided into Dr Jashot Singhota, who lived in Tulse Hill, at around 7am on January 25 2017, on Thurlow Park Road, at the junction with Birkbeck Hill.

Police found that a black Ford Fiesta driven by Fitzgerald – who stopped at the scene - had collided into Ms Singhota, while she was crossing a zebra crossing.

A CARE service which provides support for people with learning disabilities in Southwark has scored the top-possible rating of ‘Outstanding’ in an inspection.

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission rated Aurora Options ‘Outstanding’ overall following an inspection in October and published at the end of last month.

The service, which also operates in Lewisham and Bexley, provides support for those with learning disabilities to be able to live at home as independently as possible.

Debbie Ivanova, CQC’s Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care, said: “At our last inspection at Aurora Options we rated the service as Good overall.

“Now the service has achieved our top rating of Outstanding, which is a testament to the passionate leadership and staff at the service.

Officers from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit discovered that Fitzgerald had been driving to work from his girlfriend’s address in a car he did not own and was not insured to drive.

He had also not cleared off the frost from the windscreen before setting off, seriously impairing his visibility.

Jasjot’s sister, Neha Santasalo, said on Friday: "Although this will not bring Jasjot back, the sentencing today provides closure allowing us to focus on our sister, her life and all that she achieved.

"This sentence shows how important it is to clear your windscreen before driving off in the morning, especially during the cold weather.

“This is a simple action that takes no time at all but can prevent any other family having to go through what we have."

Since her tragic death, Jasjot’s organs have saved the lives of five people.

Detective Constable Sejal Unadkat, who led the investigation, said: "This is an incident that could have been avoided entirely if only Fitzgerald had taken the proper precautions in ensuring his visibility was not impaired by the frost on his windscreen.

"He didn’t, and as a result Jasjot’s family, and indeed society, has been “I was delighted to read how the service has focused on making sure each person is empowered to have a full and meaningful life, based on their choices.”

The watchdog’s inspectors said they found multiple examples demonstrating staff commitment and passion at the service, which is based near Deptford Bridge.

Among the innovation hailed by the Commission were a series of social enterprises established by the service, including card-making, where people with learning disabilities could design cards to sell at a market stall in the town centre.

One staff member even won an award for good care after being nominated by a relative.

The service was established in 1981 by the parents of a person with learning disabilities.

Primary school to be demolished and rebuilt from scratch

Alexander’s father, Gary Fitzgerald, 54, was also interviewed under caution in May 2017 before pleading guilty to permitting the use of a motor vehicle with no insurance in May 2018.

He was given eight points on his licence, issued with a £250 fine and ordered to pay a victim surcharge and costs.

DETAILED PLANS have been submitted for the demolition and rebuilding of a Rotherhithe school.

The proposal would see the existing buildings of Rotherhithe Primary, on Rotherhithe New Road, demolished and a new two-storey primary school built in its place.

The new expanded site would accommodate 630 school pupils as well as a 60-place integrated nursery.

The current single-storey buildings were built in 1971 and are thought to have outlived their shelf-life, with refurbishment not thought viable.

According to the architects, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, the area’s dockyard and engineering past has inspired the design of the new building.

“The conceptual idea for the building seeks to evoke the memory of past. The ribbon of the garden wall wraps around the site creating a protected central courtyard evocative of the historic

basins and dry docks which were once carved out of the Rotherhithe peninsular,” the application states.

“The organic shapes and materials of the landscape flow into the ‘basin’ of the courtyard which is framed by the more rectilinear walls of the building, inspired by the retaining walls of the dry docks and Brunel’s engineering legacy.”

The plans also include landscaping of the school grounds and the construction of a “multi-use games area.”

The work will take place in stages as to not affect the ability of pupils to study at the school, the News understands.

An existing day care centre on the school grounds, accessed from Rotherhithe New Road, will remain operational during the work, but may get new premises in the future as part of council plans for the remaining land.

A committee date to consider the application has not yet been announced.

AN OVER-SUBSCRIBED Rotherhithe secondary school has proposed changing its admissions policies in a move that would favour those who live closer to the school.

Bacon’s College, on Timber Pond Road, has proposed a raft of changes to its oversubscription criteria, including abolishing its current inner and outer catchment areas, addition of places for siblings of current pupils and for children of staff.

Instead of the current catchment areas, the remaining places would be allocated to children living at a permanent address south of the River Thames with the closest to the college prioritised.

Applicants living in any other geographical area would also be favoured on the basis of their proximity to the school.

Sir Simon Hughes, chair of the board of governors, said: “All schools have to consider their admissions policies on a regular basis.

“We are moving to then giving a priority to youngsters who live nearer to the school – the big change is there will be an

advantage for those living nearer the school. At the moment it’s a lottery.”

A consultation into the suggested changes ends on January 31. If implemented, the new admissions policy would go into effect for September 2020 entry.

Admissions arrangements are required to be consulted upon every seven years, even if the arrangements have not changed in that period.

Council disappointed after Ofo bike firm ditches London

£89M PURCHASE PUTS SOUTHWARK HIGH UP ON INVESTMENT CHART

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL’S purchase of an £89 million commercial complex last month is likely to put it among the most expensive by local authorities, when compared to the most recent available data.

As the News reported last week, the council confirmed it had purchased Courage Yard, a commercial in Shad Thames at a meeting in December. The site had been on the market for £89million.

Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by the Bureau of Investigative Journalists revealed the investments in commercial property by English local authorities from 2014-15 to 2018-19.

The most expensive recorded investment was an eye-watering £360 million for a former BP site by Spelthorne Borough Council in Surrey.

Yet the tenth most expensive investment - by Bournemouth Council for a retail park worth £46.9million - is nearly half the market value of Courage Yard.

The stats mean that Southwark Council’s purchase is likely to be among the most expensive by a local authority.

However, the amount that Southwark Council invested in commercial property over the same period is not yet available.

Other local authorities may have also obtained more expensive assets in a period the data does not cover or may not have responded to an FOI request.

At a meeting on Friday with opposition Liberal Democrat councillors, council officers said that the investment, signed off at a Cabinet meeting on December 11, was a sensible one.

The council expects the investment to net £5million a year in rental income, which it said would go towards funding frontline services.

The purchase was funded by recycled capital receipts, internal borrowing and external borrowing from the Public Works Loans Board, the council said.

Speaking last week, Cllr Victoria Mills, cabinet member for Finance, Performance and Brexit, said: “Income we receive from our commercial property portfolio is essential to help support our highly valued public services in this time of decreasing government funding.”

However, Cllr Anood Al-Samerai, leader of the opposition Lib Dems, said they would be pushing the council to “properly involve” residents in any future plans for the site, adding ward councillors were concerned by a lack of consultation before the purchase.

DOCKLESS CYCLE hire company Ofo has announced it is leaving London, but despite being blasted for broken bikes littering the streets and a spate of robberies, the council says it is ‘disappointed’ by the blow to green transport in the borough.

As the News reported last year Ofo decided to focus on the London Bridge, Borough and Bankside areas and scale back in Peckham, Camberwell and East Dulwich, after reports of anti-social behaviour and crime.

Commuters told of being targeted by thugs riding the bright yellow bikes around the Surrey Canal Path, Burgess Park, and Peckham who snatched phones and used ‘pincer-like movements’ to aggressively break in front of other cyclists in attempts to force them off the road and steal their wheels.

Meanwhile, dumped and broken bikes have cluttered pavements causing problems for wheelchair users, and become an eyesore in parks and ponds.

In an effort to iron out the problems, Southwark Council had joined forces with other boroughs in London and TfL to create a code of conduct for cycling operators and started campaigning for a new bylaw that would make companies like Ofo need a licence before they can set up.

Last Friday, a statement from Ofo’s headquarters in China confirmed the company was ‘adjusting’ but fell short of explaining the reasons behind its apparent withdrawal, with a spokesperson telling News: “Ofo is

adjusting its overseas operations. We will keep you updated when a decision has been finalised.”

Ofo’s withdrawal is a blow to green transport in the borough, especially given Southwark Council’s aims to reduce dangerous levels of air pollution and get people more active.

Although has been left ‘disappointed’ by the disastrous scheme, there are hopes other operators can continue to provide an alternative for commuters.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for environment, transport management and air quality said: “We are committed to getting people in Southwark cycling and walking, and whilst we know that there were some problems with how dockless bikes have sometimes been abandoned on the street, we are disappointed to hear that Ofo will be leaving London.

“We are continuing to push TfL to extend Santander bike docks to cover more of the borough, as bike hire schemes are a great way to help people start pedaling.”

Ofo was under increasing pressure from the police after regular meetings began with the company’s reps to deal with anti-social behaviour and offences committed on bikes with deliberately broken tracking systems.

Southwark Police’s DI Luke Williams told the News in October his team was aware of reports of robberies involving Ofo bikes, but ‘there is no evidence this mode of transport is being used any more than other methods’.

At the time, nearly 30 stolen or broken dockless bikes from operators including Ofo were stacked in police stations across Southwark.

Bus driver wanted for the kids to surf

A CHARITY that will take young people from Southwark to the seaside to learn how to surf is looking for a double-decker bus driver to volunteer on the day trip.

The Wave Project will take children and young adults aged between eight and 21 to the beach this summer as part of a six-week surfing and paddleboard course held at weekends from May onward.

The youngsters taking part will be trained by qualified surfing instructors and a team of surfing mentors after being referred by doctors, social workers or other professionals who think they can benefit from building their confidence, resilience, and motivation. Many will have complex needs – and some will have never seen the sea before.

The charity says it is keen to spread the word to help recruit more volunteers to help out - including coach drivers for the double-decker bus.

MP calls for more to get on PrEP

NEIL COYLE is pushing for HIV prevention drug PrEP to be ‘available as necessary’ as NHS England backed calls for the number of trial places to be doubled.

HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis is taken before sex to prevent HIV infection in people believed be to at high-risk of the illness, including some men who have sex with men, and sex workers.

The NHS has trialled the medicine on 10,000 people in England since September 2017 ahead of a future nationwide roll-out. Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle says gay and bisexual men in Southwark have been turned away from taking part in the trial in Southwark after places ran out.

In a statement published on January 11, NHS England said it wants to double access to 26,000 people by 2020 after demand ‘significantly exceeded initial expert predictions’ and committed to extra funding for the places.

Coyle told the News this week: "For a mixture of reasons, Southwark has a higher prevalence of HIV in the local population than the national average.

“PrEP is proven to extinguish the risk of further transmission of HIV and should be more widely available.

“After pressure from organisations like the Terrence Higgins Trust and local activists in Southwark, with the support of many MPs, Public Health England have done the right thing in extending the trial numbers but should make PrEP as available as necessary and not put any artificial total number on use."

A NEW library and heritage centre is slated for the Walworth Road after the council announced a deal with developer Lendlease amid on-going controversy over the future of Walworth Town Hall and the Cuming Collection.

This week the council issued a statement confirming it wants to build a library and heritage centre in Elephant Park on a long-term, peppercorn rent lease with developer Lendlease.

Southwark’s cabinet will make a final decision on the plans on January 22, after a report detailing the potential scheme was published on Tuesday.

The council says if approved, work will start straightaway and the centre will include community meeting space, computer and internet access, and heritage and cultural displays and regular events – and ‘the opportunity to showcase some of the Cuming Collection’.

The news comes after a key heritage group encouraged its members to boycott the council’s on-going consultation on the future of Walworth Town Hall, due to finish on January 21.

The council, which recently acquired the £89 million Courage Yard complex in Shad Thames as an incomegenerating property investment, had said fixing up the gutted town hall – expected to cost £20 million - was too expensive. Initial estimates had been at around £35-40 million.

Instead, it put the project out to tender, inviting developers to bid to take over the 250-year lease and make a profit by renting out commercial space.

As the News reported last week, heritage campaigners say the light-ondetail plans are ‘unfit for purpose’.

The campaign to keep the building public and the collection in a permanent home of its own, are now gathering momentum.

In a formal response to the council published online, the Walworth Society described the 250-year lease as ‘excessive’, and claimed it ‘speaks to a desire of the council to rid itself of these buildings’.

It described the part-privatisation of the town hall as ‘a short-sighted move given the potential of the Walworth area and the role that these publicly gifted buildings can play in helping it to be successful’.

The group believes the council could redevelop the buildings itself and still make a tidy profit while keeping them publicly owned – and providing the Cuming Museum with a permanent base.

“We would like to see Southwark Council redevelop the town hall themselves,” the Walworth Society’s Jeremy Leach told the News: “We think there is a real opportunity if it can be done for a lower amount than what the council originally thought and gain commercial revenue.

“We have what we think is an interesting idea for the future of Walworth Town Hall and we have done a lot of research.

“One of the big parts of that is keeping the Cuming Collection on display.”

The group wants to see an independent charity set up to manage a heritage and cultural space within the refurbished town hall – with commercial space rented out to raise money elsewhere in the building.

Walworth town hall after being gutted by fire

Ravaged by fire yet 98% of collection remains SINCE FIRE gutted Walworth Town Hall, the home of the Cuming Collection, this jewel in Walworth’s crown has been left gathering dust in storage.

Six years later the collection could soon have a new base in Walworth – but the future of its former home is more uncertain.

The former town hall for the metropolitan borough of Southwark was ravaged by a blaze that broke out on March 25, 2013.

One-hundred-and-twenty firefighters battled the blaze, but the Grade II listed building was left a shell.

Despite popular misconception, 98 per cent of the museum objects displayed were undamaged, with the rest safely stored in its former archive at neighbouring Newington Library.

Although the building was in a perilous state, firefighters and museum staff heroically saved around 500 objects on display at the time, and staff hoped to be back in the refurbished building within two years.

In 2015 plans were drawn up by the council to redevelop the site, but these were quietly shelved after the budget spiralled to £40 million.

Six years later just one curator from the museum’s team is believed to still be in post.

Items from the collection have been loaned to other

museums, and have gone on display at some events across the borough, but anger has grown that the museum is still left in limbo with its treasures lockedup in storage.

At the Walworth History Festival, held in September 2018, dozens of visitors all asked the same question: “what is happening to the Cuming Museum?”

The beloved collection was amassed by Richard Cuming, (1777-1870) and his son Henry Syer Cuming (1817-1909), who donated 100,000 treasures to the people of Southwark upon his death.

Both were fascinated with cultures and places across the globe, with artefacts from all over the world, leading it to be described as a ‘miniature British Museum’.

The museum is known for its rare, fully-intact nineteenth century ‘cabinet of curiosities’ and objects from the capital, charting the day-to-day lives of ordinary, working south Londoners such as toys, posters and objects found by construction workers and dockers.

As generations of children have grown up learning about Southwark’s history through the collection, which holds items of world importance, there is a huge groundswell of support for it to have a secure, permanent home.

No money for police, the NHS and housing - but billions for Brexit A S IT is my first column of 2019, I hope all News readers had a great Christmas and wish everyone a happy new year.

It is almost nine years since David Cameron and Nick Clegg waltzed into Downing Street at the head of their Lib Dem-Tory Coalition. Since that day, we have all been told there was no money for the NHS, policing or to build the homes we really need in Southwark and across the country.

The cuts and austerity since that day have caused huge problems.

The police lack the resources to investigate all crimes. We’ve lost over 400 officers and PCSOs in Southwark and have witnessed a national rise in crime.

The NHS has been undermined and now struggles to meet demand with rising waiting times and staff shortages causing millions of routine appointments and operations to be postponed or cancelled.

The housing crisis has worsened with ever growing homelessness, insufficient council housing and house prices far outpacing people’s

ability to afford a home.

Suddenly, the Government have found billions of pounds. They are spending over £6 billion on stockpiling medicine and other nonsensical ‘No Deal’ preparations.

Millions of pounds have even been earmarked for a ferry company with no ferries.

This profligate squandering is sickening given the difference it could make to our police, NHS or to building the homes we really need.

The waste echoes the £1 billion found suddenly for the DUP after Theresa May called the election in 2017 and lost her majority and mandate. Her reliance on their ten votes in Westminster to keep her own job was hugely expensive to taxpayers.

The sums prove, however, that politics is about choices and priorities. May chose to put herself first in 2017 and the Government has abused No Deal in an attempt to threaten the whole country and hold Parliament hostage over its fake choice between May’s dodgy downgrade plans or the chaos and

damage of crashing out of the EU with no agreement at all.

There are other options, including extending Article 50 to secure a different withdrawal package or for the UK to hold a further election or new referendum.

I believe a ‘people’s vote’ might help demonstrate the shift in opinion since 2016 as so many people recognise they were lied to and no longer trust the Leave campaigners who appear to have Putin’s blessing.

Revoking Article 50 is also a means of avoiding damage – and possibly avoiding Brexit altogether to help ensure our country does not decline further, face the even greater undermining of our international standing and reputation, or break up altogether given the implications for Northern Ireland and also Scotland.

I heard from many local people before Tuesday’s crunch vote. Six asked me to back May’s proposals.

Two dozen called on me to support No Deal. Many thousands of people requested I continue opposing anything that would damage the UK. I was elected in 2015 and re-elected

While there’s no single way to prevent cervical cancer, there are ways of reducing the risk. Finding and treating it at an early stage is key to successful treatment and can help save lives.

Cervical screening – known as a ‘smear test’ – checks for pre-cancerous cells which can be easily treated to eliminate the risk of cancer developing.

All women and people with a cervix aged between 25 and 64 – and registered with a GP – are invited for a free NHS smear test every three to five years.

The five-minute test prevents around 75% of cervical cancers from developing, saving an estimated 5,000 lives each year in the UK. However, almost a third of those eligible for free NHS smear tests in Southwark do not attend – and therefore miss out on potentially lifesaving screening.

As part of Cervical Cancer Prevention Week 2019 (21-27 January), my colleagues and I are urging women and people with a cervix in Southwark to attend their regular screening appointments when invited.

Crossword DOWN AND BURNT OUT IN WALWORTH: IS THERE NOT A CASE TO INVEST IN THE OLD TOWN HALL AND KEEP HISTORIC FORMER HOME OF THE CUMING COLLECTION?

EWS THAT Southwark is gaining a library and new heritage centre, with space to display part of the Cuming Collection, the treasure of our borough, is to be celebrated.

But there are many questions that still need answering - most importantly, what is to become of Walworth Town Hall?

The building, used as the town hall for the old metropolitan borough of Southwark until the mid-60s, was nearly destroyed by fire in 2013.

At the time it housed the Cuming Collection, a museum of national importance that gave children growing up in one of the UK’s poorest neighbours a cultural and historical treasure trove on their doorstep.

The council says for just ‘peppercorn rent’ it can get a 250-year lease from developer Lendlease where it can establish a new library and heritage centre within the wider Elephant Park regeneration scheme.

Meanwhile, the Town Hall, a historic building with a wonderful history, will be leased for 250 years to a private developer, partly let out for commercial use while leaving aside some space for community and cultural events The council shelved plans to refurbish the hall itself in 2015, when the projected costs reached nearly £40m. At the time, council leader Peter John told the News: “I’m conscious we pledged to restore it but not at any cost.

“I don’t want people turning around in five years and saying ‘why did you spend £45million on this building, which we don’t think is absolutely brill?’

But developers are now saying they can fix it up for half that price, and they’ll be the ones making a tidy profit in future.

Last week we reported the council had potentially spent nearly £90 million on buying up a complex in Shad Thames, saying it was a wise investment as the collected rent would recoup the cost and then start paying for public services.

Couldn’t they have done the same with Walworth Town Hall for a fraction of the price?

Life after GCSEs - on to sixth form and college

IT’S NOW time to make some real decisions about your future - once you have taken your GCSEs you officially will be an adult, writes Kevin Quinn...

Mum and dad will no longer be responsible for your education, nor will the government; and believe it or not, neither will your teachers.

It will be entirely up to you to decide which path you take - and while everyone including the government is heavily focused on apprenticeships, there will be many of you who will want to follow the traditional academic route. Of course the results you get at secondary school will to a large extent determine what you do in further education. But now is the time to look at what sixth forms and further education institutes are offering.

Unlike secondary school admissions you have the freedom to go where you like - it does not have to be local - but bear in mind journey times. You don’t want to be exhausted before you arrive at college!

Being in the final year of your GCSEs, you will have a fair idea of the results you are likely to achieve and make sure that when you call or visit a sixth form or college you find out the exact qualifications you need to get on the courses that you like the look of.

The truth is, if you are really passionate about a course but feel that you might not

get the grades, it would be worth thinking about re-sitting. After spending the whole of your life in school you might think that re-sitting any GCSE would be completely out of the question.

However, at your age, making sure that you do something that you feel passionate about and enjoy is absolutely vital. Countless people have had to work that bit harder and give something a go twice before they succeed. The experience at sixth form or college will be so different to that at school that you should find the change enough to warrant the extra effort and time it takes to re-sit an examine or start a new one to get on to the course you are ultimately after.

The relationship with most of your teachers will be very different, as they will treat you more like an adult. After all you don’t have to be there - it is your choice.

This means that lessons are normally more relaxed and you usually spend more time with smaller groups than you would do at secondary school.

While there is little doubt that A-levels are much harder than GCSEs, the fact that you have fewer subjects and are studying your favourite or best subjects means you will find the self-motivation to get to grips with it.

The work will be much more in depth, but probably more interesting. Essay subjects at A-level are much more about

analysis and evaluation than just pure facts. This means that you can no longer get away with having a basic knowledge of a subject and then blagging the exam or just learning reams of facts without

actually understanding them.

On the plus side you definitely get more freedom, including free periods (usually eleven or so hours a week), which allows you to plan when and how you work.

As well as the courses, check out the facilities at the sixth forms and colleges you are interested in, as they can help make your whole working environment a better one.

From Bloomsbury to Broadway and back to Bohemia ‘LOVE CHANGES everything’ sang Michael Ball in the number which took him beyond musical theatre to the Top Ten and international stardom. The song is the best known from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Aspects of Love, whose success did not match that of its star and which was described by the New York Times as ‘perhaps the greatest flop in Broadway history,’ writes Katie Kelly...

If your expectations of the show are based on this song alone then ‘Aspects of Love’ is a surprising night out.

There is nothing controversial, or even original, in the hit that opens and closes it, but the action in between is anything but conventional. The story follows the terribly tangled love lives of a theatre star, her young starstruck fan, Alex; his Uncle George, an Italian lover and a 15 year old girl.

The first act bowls along with plenty to please. Some fabulous vocals, a set that feels sumptuous,

beautiful costumes and stunning lead actress, Kelly Price. The pared back orchestration, which consists of a two pianos and percussion, is impressive for a while. There is humour, particularly in the song ‘She’d be far better off with you’ The second half, however, became claustrophobically dark and inward looking. The piano begins to feel discordant and overworked and no amount of great singing and lovely frocks can sweeten the fact that what we seem to be watching is a family that wouldn’t look out of place on The Jeremy Kyle Show.

To recap: the story begins when the 17-year-old Alex persuades an actress, Rose, with whom he is smitten, to accompany him to the South of France where they set up camp in a house belonging to his Uncle George. George is tipped off and pays a surprise visit where he falls for Rose. The suggestion is made by George, that for Alex, this is a youthful fling and not to be taken too seriously. Two years later Alex turns up at George’s apartment

and discovers that Rose is in now in a relationship with his uncle. There follows an extremely disturbing scene where Alex pulls a gun on his former lover, claiming that if he can’t have her then nobody can. This all gets passed over very lightly when he accidentally fires the gun and only slightly injures Rose and soon enough everyone is having a light-hearted sing-song about who Rose should really belong to, Uncle or Nephew. If all that isn’t toxic enough, a few more years pass, a few more complicated entanglements and the incestuous group find themselves reunited and Alex’s attentions turn to the daughter of Rose and George, with disastrous results.

There is a lot that is impressive about this cast and production but the juxtaposition of show tunes and relational dysfunction without a hint of irony feels jarring. The author of the novella that inspires this musical, David Garnett, was part of the bohemian Bloomsbury Group. A wonderfully talented collection of people with equally disturbingly

to put back development by at least a couple of years. The idealistic Dr Stockmann finds himself blind-sided by the negative response to his findings and thoroughly unprepared to deal with what is set to come.

The first act is pretty slow, filled to the brim with exposition and introductions but not an awful lot else. Thank goodness, then, for the opening scene of the second act, where we pick up at a raucous town meeting in which Stockmann barely gets a word in edgeways and the Mayor promptly shuts him down any time he gets close. Mob mentality rules, as Stockmann soon learns, while his world collapses around him, with the Mayor ruthlessly pulling out all the stops to put an end to this hysteria over an invisible threat in the water.

The set itself is simple yet effective, a half constructed home there, perhaps, to remind the audience of the development that is hanging in the balance, and the livelihoods along with it. Noted, too, is the chokingly

patriotic music accompanying almost all of the scene changes, most memorably Springsteen’s ‘Born in the USA’ and ‘God Bless the USA’ by Lee Greenwood. With added details such as these the production is clear about the small town Republican climate it is framing itself within, yet still misses the mark to create a totally convincing production.

Though flawed, with some parts underwritten and some parts underaccented the message of the production stands, presenting its conflicting ideas of ‘public good’ through economics vs health and science vs politics. Good for the production, but perhaps not for us, it would seem that the timing of this piece couldn’t have been better.

KICKING OFF the Union Theatre’s fourth Essential Classics season is Arthur Miller’s adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People. While the play has not seen a UK stage for almost thirty years, director Phil Willmott ensures that the audience are very much aware of the present-day parallels, writes Rosie O’Connell...

Grafton Dance Hall is to Ballroom what Wimbledon is to tennis

Hidden treasure in Dulwich has had famous names such as Len Goodman, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke at the hall

EW PEOPLE living in Southwark know that that an unprepossessing building tucked away near North Dulwich Station has, for decades, been an international centre for ballroom dancing.

Now the hidden treasure on Village Way could be in line for a blue plaque to recognise its place as the ‘Wimbledon or Twickenham’ of the sport, thanks to decades with dance superstars Bob Burgess and Doreen Freeman at its helm.

Today’s Grafton Dance Centre was built in 1910 by a Dulwich resident, Charles Day, as a public hall and later used as a communal kitchen to help the war effort.

The hall was reinstated as a dance academy in 1957 by Phyllis Walker who later passed it onto Burgess and Freeman in 1972.

The pair were icons in the heyday of the sport, dancing together from 1961 after the death of Burgess’ first wife and dance partner, Margaret Baker, and after Freeman’s dance partner and husband, Victor Barrett, had retired.

With Baker, Burgess had been placed second in 1947’s British Open Amateur Championship and as finalists in the professionals of 1952 and 1953.

Freeman danced her first professional competitions just a year after meeting Barrett in 1946.

Barrett, then number two in the world, spotted her raw talent and offered to train her for free before taking her to the famous Josephine Bradley for coaching.

Remarkably, just a year later, they came second in the British Open Professional Championship and won the World Professional Championship. The pair went on to marry and have a daughter, Wendy, but eventually divorced.

As partners, Burgess and Freeman won the Star’s championships in 1960, were placed second in the World Professional 10 dance championship in 1962, won joint and individual Carl Alan Awards known as the ‘Oscar’ of dance - and danced as demonstrators at Arthur Murray’s studios in New York and at top venues across the UK. Burgess was also founding member of the British Dance Federation, playing a huge role in advancing the sport.

they reached a wide audience thanks to the silver screen.

Freeman was a TV superstar during eight years partnering with Victor Silvester on BBC Dancing Club, while Burgess performed in Dance Hall with Petula Clarke and Diana Dors.

Grafton quickly took off and became an international hub for the sport, producing competitors and beginners alike.

Votes for a blue plaque have come in from Strictly’s Shirley Ballas and Len Goodman, who have both tread the Grafton’s boards, along with Dulwich locals and MBE holders Marcus and Karen Hilton, nine-time world champion winners.

couple before and are now highlyrespected coaches themselves using the experience they gained dancing alongside Burgess and Freeman as competitors.

“When I first saw Bob dance I was a novice, dancing in a competition, and he made a strong impression on me,” said George, who is now in his 90s.

“I didn’t know people could learn to dance like that - there was something magical.”

Burgess was known for what George describes as an ‘academic’ and ‘clean cut style’, and Freeman for her dancing flair and Elizabeth Taylor looks, with Pat describing her as a diva in the true sense of the word.

“Her style was much more outward going than most girls those days,” George explained. “She wasn’t just dragged around on the dancefloor, she was much more flamboyant.

“As a pair the two contrasting styles made a very effective partnership and something the others didn’t have.

“I think the style they adopted set the

style for at least 20-30 years which makes them so outstanding.

Freeman continued running the studio after Burgess’ death in 1998, and was still coaching as late as 2009 after it was taken over by Brenda Bishop. Today the 88-year-old is fully retired in year-old lives in Scotland.

Since 2010 it has been leased by Paul Burbedge, who first danced in the building as a 15-year-old competitor.

Dancers who have trained at the studio include current world professional ballroom champions Arunas Bizokas

and Katusha Demidova, and dance coaches Michael Stylianos and Lorna Lee, from TV’s Bad Teen to Ballroom Queen.

Paul has been slowly restoring parts of the unlisted building, which is part of the Dulwich Estate but has no formal heritage protection.

He said many people in Dulwich and Herne Hill walk past ‘the funny little building by the bridge’ everyday but few know its history, describing it is a ‘treasure amongst their midst’.

“Just about every World, European, United Kingdom and British ballroom dance champion since 1972 have danced on the very boards laying here today,” he told the News.

“The Grafton was the hub of the ballroom dance world, synonymous with Bob Burgess and Doreen Freeman.

“What better way is there to acknowledge, that Grafton Hall is to Ballroom dancing what Wimbledon is to tennis, Wembley is to football, Twickenham is to rugby, than by placing a blue plaque on the front of the building?”

THERE WERE some exciting offerings on the Park’s Edge menu.

Mine were especially exciting as I had allowed The Tornado to choose for me, writes Michael Holland...

The Tornado is the term of endearment awarded by her colleagues to our fireball-of-energy waitress who, once she saw me dithering over the menu, suggested with a smile that I should entrust my choices to her.

Perfect. My dinner companion, Julia, fresh from Selhurst Park and three points in the proverbial bag, had a nononsense approach to proceedings, going straight for a celebratory G&T before choosing the Oxtail Ravioli, of which she declared, ‘Amazing’.

My first course turned out to be Spicy Pumpkin Soup with Dumplings, a very

seasonal and tummy-warming bowl of loveliness. Our server had also chosen two nice wines to accompany the first courses so we were off to a good start.

Park’s Edge Bar & Kitchen is on the edge of Brockwell Park, affording a nice vista for diners. Inside it was busy with a pleasant atmosphere created by general conversation getting along harmoniously with the background

music. Claudia and Barry keep an eagle eye on everything, ensuring their high standards are maintained. And they are.

Julia continued with her appraisal of the ravioli dish, which was now deemed ‘Delicious’, and that led on to talk of family dinners, homeopathy and then she ordered Fried Cauliflower as a main course! ‘What!’ She fought off my protestations that built a case for

anything with cauliflower in can only be a side dish. How wrong was I? It arrived looking extremely intriguing, with a dribble of sauce around its edge and a crust of something else. Julia let me try a little, which only went to pique my interest even more. What were those ingredients that created such wonderful flavours, I wondered. We shall never know, because my Pork Shoulder with braised vegetables in a rich gravy came and I could think of nothing else except tucking right in.

The meat simply fell to pieces, and there was something special about those humble vegetables… And that gravy with its intense meaty taste was a wow… Plus, the triple-cooked chips were an added bonus!

We were quite in awe at the quality and presentation of the dishes emanating from the open kitchen, and I was transfixed by the serenity and calmness of those doing the cooking.

Claudia broke my daydream with an offer we couldn’t refuse, i.e. sampling a pinot noir she was thinking of adding to the wine list. It, like everything else we had had, was really good.

It was now time for dessert but after such a feast we sensibly decided to share the Poached Pear with Quince

and Ice Cream. There was some cheese in there too, which we weren't sure about, but still a good ending to a great meal. This was fine dining at its best.

The Caribbean twist to classic English dishes is quite niche, but it definitely works.

Now I feel a need to go back and try the rest of the menu.

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable a crane operation to be carried out, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

Whilst the works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in Hopton Street, between Southwark Street and No’s 65.

The existing one way working in Holland Street, between Hopton Street and Sumner Street will be made two way for access and egress purposes.

The alternative route for affected traffic will be via Southwark Street, Great Guildford Street, Sumner Street, Holland Street as applicable.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The works will take place on the 2nd – 3rd February, and the 16th – 17th February. If due to adverse weather conditions then the works will be in place on the 9th – 10th or 23rd – 24th February.

2. The effect of the orders would be: - in BERMONDSEY STREET, (a) to convert existing lengths of single yellow lines to double yellow line 'at any time' waiting restrictions in the following locations (all measurements are approximate and describe the length of the waiting restrictions in ‘metres’):- (i) the north-east side, from the south-eastern kerb-line of Black Swan Yard south-eastward (12.5m), and (ii) the south-west side, outside Nos. 76 – 80 Bermondsey Street (15.5m); and (b) the south-west side, outside No. 80 Bermondsey Street to reduce the length, by 2m, of an existing permit holders’ parking place in CPZ ‘F’.

The above changes are being proposed to accommodate the addition of a new footway build-out to ease pedestrian flow in Bermondsey Street.

The general effect of the cycle tracks order, in conjunction with the powers conferred by section 65(1) of the Highways Act 1980, is to introduce cycle tracks at the following locations:(a) in OLD RAILWAY WALK – to introduce a two-way segregated cycle track for use of pedal cycles only, comprising of the north-eastern part of the footpath linking Albion Street and Brunel Road, from the south-eastern kerb-line of Brunel Road to the north-eastern kerb-line of Albion Street; (b) in RAILWAY AVENUE – (i) to introduce a two-way segregated cycle track for use of pedal cycles only, comprising of the south-western part of footpath linking Brunel Road and Kenning Street, from a point 4 metres south-east of the south-eastern kerb-line of Kenning Street and a point 13 metres northwest of the north-eastern kerb-line of Brunel Road; and (ii) to introduce a shared-use cycle track for the use of pedal cycles and pedestrians only, throughout the full width of the public footpath, linking the north-eastern kerb-line of Brunel Road and a point 13 metres north-west of that kerb-line; (c) in TUNNEL ROAD – to introduce a two-way segregated cycle track for use of pedal cycles only, comprising of the south-eastern part of footpath linking Tunnel Road and Railway Avenue, from the north-western kerb-line of Tunnel Road to the south-western kerb-line of Railway Avenue.

DULWICH HAMLET’S very own podcast - ‘Forward the Hamlet’ - is set to return over the upcoming weeks.

Those familiar with the podcast will be aware of its entertaining and occasionally auspicious contributors. Henceforth, listeners will have to get used to a new voice on the team – yours truly, but don’t let this fact dampen any enthusiasm!

Long-term hosts Hugo Greenhalgh and Ben Sibley will still be present.

Hugo, one of the podcast’s founding fathers, recounted how it all began.

The Stockwell resident first attended a Hamlet game on the opening day of the 2013-14 season.

He recalled his first taste of the club and how he caught the Hamlet bug.

“I went down with a few friends and absolutely loved it,” he said. “I realised that I had a great non-league club right on my doorstep, so I started coming more and more regularly.”

Hugo soon befriended a fellow fan named Jack McInroy, son of the locally renowned ‘Hamlet Historian’ – also called Jack McInroy. Jack (junior) hosted a podcast dubbed ‘South London Hardcore’, which was the precursor to Forward the Hamlet.

“On the last day of that season he suggested to me that we should do a Dulwich Hamlet podcast, and we just took it from there,” Hugo explained.

Hugo underlined the elements that make the podcast special.

“I think first and foremost Ben Sibley and I are Dulwich Hamlet fans. We love this club and we put a lot of time into following this team.

In that sense, I think we’re able to give something a bit different [to the club’s other media] – we are able to provide the voice from the terraces.

“The format allows great scope for humour…and telling the stories that might not be heard in the official match programme or highlights.”

Hugo alluded to some of his personal highlights from the podcast.

“I’ve really enjoyed speaking to some of the players over the years, particularly those who have been at Premier League academies or have had the opportunity to play abroad.

They’ve always got such great stories, but perhaps haven’t had the media exposure of professionals, so you never quite know what you’re going to get when you stick a microphone in front of them.

“I found out a few weeks ago that [Hamlet goalkeeper] Preston Edwards listens to the podcast, which was quite gratifying. He says that he really likes what we’re doing.

I’m sure not every player listens, but it’s nice to know that at least some do.”

Record-breaking year for Southwark Aquatics

SOUTHWARK AQUATICS Swimming Club goes from strength to strength. This year it has a record number of swimmers who have qualified to compete in the Surrey County Championships 2019, starting later this month and running over three weekends.

“I’m delighted that 22 of our swimmers – some 40% of those eligible – have achieved the qualifying times and will represent the

club,” said chairman John FergusonSmith. “One of our swimmers, Teddy Kinsler, has actually qualified for twelve events and will be pushing for a podium finish.

“It just goes to show that, while we may be a small club, we can help swimmers realise their full potential.

We’re looking to grow, too, so anyone who has the raw talent is welcome to come to the club and we'll help them achieve their personal goals.

“We pride ourselves on being inclusive and affordable.’

However, Hugo’s greatest personal highlight came when the issue of Dulwich’s stadium was taken to parliament and MP Helen Hayes ended her speech by addressing the Deputy Speaker with the proclamation: “Forward the Hamlet!”

Hugo cast light on what listeners can expect from upcoming episodes.

“We’re in a bit of a strange situation with the jubilation of returning to Champion Hill bringing three sell-out games, but equally the performances have been pretty bad.

“I think we need to hold people to account, which is another role that the podcast can play.

“Unfortunately, we’re going to have to muse over where it’s gone wrong recently and what we can do to try and get things back on track.

So, the next podcast will be a bit more sombre than previous ones, but that’s football, isn’t it?”

Forward the Hamlet is available on all the major podcast platforms including Itunes, Acast and Mixcloud.

The specific release date of the next episode will be announced on the Forward the Hamlet website and Twitter feed (@ForwardHamlet).

It seems only right that the supporters, to which the survival of Dulwich Hamlet owes so much, are given a medium through which to express their views. On my part, I am thoroughly looking forward to contributing to it.

No league respite for Hamlet

DULWICH HAMLET’S league worries deepened as they lost a fourth game in a row since their return to Champion Hill on Boxing Day.

Gavin Rose’s side travelled to Hampton & Richmond Borough last Saturday and got off to a disastrous start when Matty Wichelow gave the hosts the lead in the sixth minute.

Hamlet barely had time to reorganise before Borough doubled the lead six minutes later through Chris Dickson.

The visitors should have pulled a goal back in the 26th minute when Decarrey Sheriff set up Jacob Erskine who saw his effort cleared off the line and Ashley Carew’s follow-up was blocked.

Six minutes later Sheriff got through

but couldn’t beat goalkeeper Tom Lovelock.

Hamlet wasted another chance before the break, this time Nyren Clunis only had Lovelock to beat but lobbed wide.

Lovelock saved from Erskine after the break before Dominic Vose shot just wide.

Erskine then saw another effort cleared off the line and the last chance fell to substitute Dipo Akinyemi but his missed kick summed up the afternoon.

The Dulwich side have collected just five points from their last eleven games. They are seventeenth in National League South, seven points above the relegation zone, ahead of their trip to East Thurrock this Saturday.

FISHER BOSS Dean Harrison says he’s putting no pressure on his players after his side came from behind to beat Bearsted 3-2 last weekend to stay top of the SCEFL Premier Division table.

Fisher conceded the first goal for the fifth consecutive game in all competitions but have come back to win three of them and draw the other.

David Baranowski gave the visitors the lead at St Paul’s last weekend before Richie Hamill levelled from the spot just before half-time.

Trey Small made it 2-1 with an excellent low finish and Mathieu Ramsamy added a third with three minutes left.

Goalkeeper Daniel Flemming – who was suffering from illness – conceded in injury-time but Fisher claimed the points to remain clear of Corinthian on

a goal difference of plus-seven.

“I think it’s the eighth week we’ve been there so no one expected it,” Harrison told Kentish Football.

“Everyone had us down as relegation favourites but we’re doing well, we’re enjoying it.

“There’s no pressure on us. I don’t put pressure on the players. Our remit for this year was to stay up and we’ve done that. We’ve tried to enjoy it all along.

Even from the first day there was no pressure on the boys. We just need to give it a go and see what we can do.

“There’s some really good sides in there throwing lots of money at it. I think it’s anyone’s in the top six, I really do. I think it’s a great league this year.

“It’s fun, I’m really enjoying it especially when there’s no pressure on you. I’ve got no pressure from the board because they’re not throwing two grand a week at me, so we just enjoy it every week. We train hard, we work on what we need to do and the boys go out

MILLWALL LIONESSES are still searching for a first Women’s Championship win of the season after last weekend’s 3-2 defeat to Leicester City.

City took the lead in just the second minute when Melissa Johnson got through and slotted past Lionesses keeper Chloe Sansom.

Chris Phillips’ side thought they had equalised in the eighteenth minute but after Michelle Young finished the referee called play back for a foul.

Sansom prevented City doubling their lead in the 26th minute when she saved Johnson’s spot-kick awarded for a foul by Ylenia Priest.

And four minutes later the visitors levelled when Evie Clarke headed home.

But Priest conceded her second penalty, this time for handball, and Libby Smith stepped up to beat Sansom from twelve yards.

Harrison added: “For the club to be dropped down this many levels when Fisher Athletic had to cease [in 2009] and the fans kept this going and we started it at level five, could you imagine what it would mean to all the people associated with Fisher over the years [to be promoted]? It would be amazing.

“It’s a sleeping giant, this club. It’s the biggest club in this league. I don’t think there’s any clubs that have been in the Conference and it would be amazing. It would be great.

“Who knows? There’s a long way to go. We’re not even looking at that.”

Fisher have a break from league action this weekend when they host Beckenham Town in the Kent Senior Trophy quarter-finals. Kick-off is at 3pm on Saturday at St Paul’s.

Town made three changes to the team that lost away to Hawkinge Town the previous Saturday. Lewis McIntyre and Adam Tarrant returned to the side as fullbacks, and Drew Newton was recalled into the team as a holding midfielder.

Adrian Butler and Adam Toubal dropped out due to injury, and Hady Traore started a three-match suspension for his indiscretion in the last game.

Peckham were soon ahead when Herve Mbongue was able to take a touch and then pick his spot through a crowd of players and fire into the far left corner of the goal.

The Menace didn’t have to wait long for their second goal, as Town’s French forward Mbongue scored a fantastic solo goal – his sixth in seven games. The ball was played through to Mbongue, his first touch was perfect and took him into the box, and as the goalkeeper advanced he coolly stroked the ball back across the goal and into the back of the net.

The second half was a lively affair as Peckham strove to secure the three points, but were unusually wasteful in front of goal. Kladji Cani could have had a hat-trick on another day, but his finishing was not up to his usual standard. Kevin Dance and Nicky Meta also had chances, but failed to test the visiting goalkeeper, including a lastditch goal line challenge that prevented Dance completing a tap-in.

finally seal the game after 70 minutes when Mbongue was fouled as he went through on goal. He stepped up aiming to seal his hat-trick, but blasted his shot against the bar, and then took a touch from the rebound leading to an indirect free-kick to Fleetdown United.

The Menace were struggling to put the game to bed, and were thankful to Larry McArdle for pulling off a point-blank save following a sliced clearance to preserve the team’s clean sheet.

The team and supporters were able to finally breathe more easily when substitute Youssef Bouimane secured all three points in the 90th minute.

Head Coach Mary Phillip said “It was a decent team performance, but we just lacked that clinical edge to make it more comfortable. Overall, we’re happy to be back to winning ways.”

Next up for third-place Menace are the league leaders as they travel to Staplehurst Monarchs this Saturday looking to close the nine-point gap to the top of the table.

BLACKBURN ROVERS had what Millwall were missing at The Den last Saturday.

An incisive, pacey, direct runner who attacks the space in front of him and provides the end product.

It was perhaps a surprise to see Tony Mowbray name Adam Armstrong on the bench and then keep him there until the 74th minute.

But by the 86th minute it became very apparent why he had.

That was when Armstrong struck. The striker gained possession on the left before playing the ball inside to Lewis Travis and making a bee-line into the box for the return pass, taking three Millwall players out of the game. Travis obliged and Armstrong took the ball to the byline before cutting it back.

That’s when Millwall’s luck ran out, James Meredith challenging Joe Nuttall in front of goal before the ball bounced in off Shaun Hutchinson.

Less than a minute later, Armstrong was cleverly peeling away to the left again on halfway, sensing there was a chance to expose the slower Hutchinson. Blackburn countered in a straight line, Travis playing the ball through the middle to Elliott Bennett in the centre circle.

Two-on-two, Jake Cooper the other Lions defender, Bennett didn’t waste a

touch as he sent Armstrong away. The attacker gave Hutchinson a head start but got there first, took four quick touches that took him back inside before with his fifth he sent the ball low into the far corner.

That was the twelfth goal that Millwall have conceded after the 85th minute of league games this season.

The game was shown live on Sky Sports, where pundit Liam Rosenior offered his theory on why the Lions are so porous late on in games.

"They are so full of energy, they play long balls, they have to cover long distances in games to get up and support for second balls and when you get to those last five to ten minutes, it's very difficult to keep that level of intensity up,” Rosenior said.

Former Brighton defender Rosenior was also less than complimentary about Millwall’s style. “It's quite hopeful, the way they play. [Neil Harris] said about putting the ball into great areas. For me, they're not great balls, they are hopeful balls into areas.

"It’s very difficult to score goals and win games when you're playing hopeful football in the other team's half. I think it can only work for you for so long, until teams work you out and I think there's an element of that this season.”

Rosenior did add that Harris is working with a limited budget, but Rovers loaned Armstrong last season before signing him last summer from Newcastle for a similar

fee that Millwall paid for Ryan Leonard.

There are players out there and it has been obvious for some time that the Lions need more pace up front.

They would have been aware of Armstrong’s threat. He scored twice for Mowbray’s Coventry in a 4-0 win in Harris’ first home league game in his first full season in charge in August 2015.

The Lions had just two efforts on goal last weekend, David Raya saving fairly comfortably from Leonard and Mahlon Romeo.

Millwall, with Ben Thompson back in the match-day squad, appeared to have a strong bench but it was Rovers who made best use of theirs. Bennett switched from right-back to left midfield after Ryan Nyambe came on for Corry Evans at halftime. Steve Morison came on and was involved in some neat exchanges of passes but Rovers limited the number of balls Millwall could get into their box. The criticism of Millwall is that they are too one-dimensional, two reliant on a target man and winning the scraps around him. Saturday’s defeat won’t have convinced anyone that’s not a nail-on-thehead truth.

Spanish goalkeeper Santiago Canizales dropped a bottle of aftershave on his foot and missed the 2002 World Cup. It goes on and Millwall defender Shaun Hutchinson joined the list of unusual footballer injuries just before the New Year doing the most mundane of domestic chores.

As is the way with these things, it was reported in a jokey way, but it could have been a lot more serious for the Lions vice-captain.

“It was a bit of a freak accident. I was putting a bin bag in a wheelie bin, like anyone would, and when I was carrying it out there was a smashed plate that I wasn’t aware was there. As I’ve dragged it past my leg to get out of the house it’s cut my leg open,” Hutchinson explained to the News.

“It was about a five-inch tear and required fifteen stitches. It was straight down the side of my shin and obviously the skin is quite tight there so it ripped open quite easily.

“I looked down and thought, ‘oh my God, what am I going to do?’ I couldn’t walk around, it was pretty bad. I had to go to hospital and get it cleaned out and the stitches put in.

“With how tight the leg is there any kind of movement or tension was going to open it up again.

“Unfortunately I missed a week but there wasn’t any long-term complications with it. I spoke to the club and they said to come in for them to have a look at it, but I made the decision myself that it wasn’t really possible to get in in the state that I was in.

“It wasn’t pouring but obviously it was bleeding. With the tension that’s in that part of the leg it was opening up.”

Hutchinson missed Millwall’s first away win of the season when they defeated Ipswich on January 1 and then the FA Cup third-round victory over Hull as Alex Pearce made his debut.

He returned against Blackburn last weekend.

“I haven’t made too big a deal of it, it’s a distraction,” he said. “It was a bad one but it could have been a lot worse, if I’d torn the muscle or caught anything that’s down there that could have caused more bleeding.

“It was an eye-opener and shows how simply something can happen to you doing your daily chores. I wasn’t doing anything stupid, I wasn’t jumping in bins, swinging them around my head, chucking glass around!

“It was annoying because I felt I was getting back into decent form and playing some good football. There were two clean sheets in a row in the league.

“It’s especially frustrating as it’s not an injury from the football pitch. But it could have been a lot worse.”

Hutchinson said: “When the gaffer put it in the press that I had hurt myself putting the bins out, I thought, ‘here we go’. The boys initially thought it was something stupid but after a couple of days they saw my leg and they hadn’t realised it was as bad as it actually was.

“When they realised how bad it was they were thinking it could happen to anyone. It shows that you need to be careful, especially in our profession, just doing the little things.”

Hutchinson is back to full fitness and was four minutes away from helping steer his side to a third clean sheet in four league games before Blackburn struck with their only two shots on target last weekend.

Millwall have the highest goals conceded to shots conceded ratio in the division.

Hutchinson admits it’s a puzzling statistic. “Last season we were getting those breaks but we’re not now,” Hutchinson said. “It’s the million dollar

question why not. I don’t know, the gaffer mentioned concentration, switching off at certain times.

“That game sums up our season the most because if there’s any kind of game that we are great at it’s the ones that are really tight and we can nick a goal.

“It was a really frustrating day. It was an issue at the start of the season as well, we were conceding one shot on target and it was a goal. It was quite ridiculous.

It’s been like that all season and, again, you don’t really know why.

“We were building up a bit of a rhythm and got those clean sheets, we could have won by more but 1-0s will always do. It’s frustrating because as a defender you’re thinking ‘let’s not change anything because we’re not giving up chances’.

“To be hit then with a sucker punch like that knocked us a bit.”

Wallace scored in injury-time for a 4-3 victory that was the spark for a surge up the table.

“I know people are probably sick of hearing this, but you saw what we did around this time last year,” Hutchinson said. “We couldn’t have gone into a harder away fixture but we got the win.

“The burden is off our back this season, we’ve got the away win and there’s not going to be the talk anymore of Millwall going to Middlebrough not having won away.

“I’d like to say it doesn’t change much because we go into every game trying to win or get a point at least. We’re not going to go up there defeated already, we’re going to give it our best shot.

“The quality might not always be there, but the heart, desire and effort will. That got us a long way last year and if we stick to what we know and what the gaffer has drilled into us I’m sure the luck will change a little bit and we’ll kick on.”

BEN THOMPSON says his game has “progressed massively” after his loan spell with Portsmouth where he was hoping to remain for the rest of this season.

Thompson, 23, picked up numerous man-of-the-match awards for Pompey as he helped them to the top of League One where they have been since the end of September.

His last game for former Millwall boss Kenny Jackett’s side was in their 1-0 FA Cup third-round win at Championship promotion chasers Norwich.

But Millwall then activated a recall clause in Thompson’s agreement, and he was an unused substitute in the 2-0 defeat to Blackburn last weekend, a new and unwanted experience this season after 27 appearances and three goals for Portsmouth in 2018-19.

Thompson was applauded by Lions fans when he warmed up along the touchline last Saturday, and he appreciated the moment.

“This is my home club, I’ve been a Millwall boy my whole life,” Thompson said. “It was great to come back and get a great reception. It’s nice to be back.

“Every week I was checking up on the Millwall score, making sure the boys were doing alright, it was nice to see them get four wins on the bounce.”

But while Thompson would never be a player to rock the boat, the fact is he has gone from being a first-team regular – playing in front of average Fratton Park league attendances this season of 18,282, almost 5,000 more than Millwall – to, based on last weekend, a fourth-choice midfielder. He found out in late December that he would be recalled, and accepted that it was always a possibility given the January clause and then the injury to Shaun Williams that exposed the Lions’ lack of depth in midfield.

“I’d done well on my loan spell but Millwall wanted me back to see how I’d go in training,” Thompson continued.

“Hopefully in the next few weeks I’ll get some game time for Millwall.

“I was thinking I was going to be at Portsmouth for the season but obviously that doesn’t always work out. There was a call-back in January and it was always

a possibility, so I was just playing game by game. I was enjoying my football again and if I came back I came back and if I didn’t I didn’t.

“I just wanted to play games and prove myself. Portsmouth is a great club, I’d heard a lot of good things from a few of the boys here and other people. When I went there I was expecting it to be a brilliant club and it was.

“To play every week in front of their home fans – and they sell it out most weeks – was brilliant. I had a great time there under Kenny and Joe [Gallen, Portsmouth assistant manager], I learned a lot from them. I think my game has progressed massively since being there.

“It was nice to go and experience a different system, it’s always good to go and practise playing something different, different tactics.”

Thompson’s performances prompted praise almost every week from Pompey fans on social media.

“I think they loved having me down there,” Thompson said. “I went to enjoy my football again and make sure I played as best as I could.

“Football’s a crazy game and I went there after hardly playing any games last season, I didn’t know what to expect. I wanted to get the feel of playing every week again and I went there and probably played my best football.”

MILLWALL’S RECORD signing and record sale could come face to face at The Riverside Stadium this Saturday.

Ryan Leonard has been a regular for the Lions since his loan move from Sheffield United last August that became permanent on January 1.

The midfielder has played 20 league games, missing just one through suspension. He has scored twice and also worn the captain’s armband, endearing himself to Lions fans with his energetic and aggressive displays.

Saville shipped fierce criticism after some uninspiring early performances for Tony Pulis’ side and he struggled to hold down a first-team place.

He has started just eleven times in the league but has recently been changing the perception of Boro fans with some strong performances and the Teesiders are unbeaten in four league games with the former Chelsea man in their line-up.

Saville’s departure from Millwall led to a downturn for Neil Harris’ side and that was no coincidence. He played the first three league games as Millwall went unbeaten, before he went off at half-time at Sheffield Wednesday, a fixture the Lions lost 2-1 before going without a win for the next seven.

He added: “It was enjoyable and I’ve gained massive experience and got a lot better for it. My house is here but I didn’t want to travel an hour-and-a-half every day to get to training, that wouldn’t have been healthy.

“I moved down there and took my missus with me. It was a new experience but nice to have that freedom at a different club and in a different environment.

“Obviously everyone in Portsmouth supports Portsmouth, that’s what you do.

Everywhere you go there are Pompey fans, it’s a bit crazy but enjoyable.

“Where I was living was always busy. It was nice to go out and have people recognise you, I suppose. It’s part and parcel of it.”

He was in regular contact with Lions boss Neil Harris, who said this month the midfielder is a future Millwall captain.

“We spoke a few times while I was there,” Thompson said. “He was seeing how I was getting on and making sure I was doing okay.

“But Millwall needed the back-up, someone to come in and fill the space.

Willo was injured but he’s back now and we’ve got good healthy competition in the squad and the boys are excited about the upcoming games.”

BEN THOMPSON could go back to Portsmouth before the end of the January transfer window.

Thompson, 23, revealed it is “an option” after he returned to the Lions bench for the 2-0 defeat at home to Blackburn Rovers last Saturday.

Millwall boss Neil Harris recalled Thompson this month, and for the moment he replaces Jem Karacan in the squad after the former Bolton midfielder departed this week.

The News asked Thompson on Tuesday where he sees his immediate future if he doesn’t break into the Millwall team.

“I’ve just come back and want to

prove myself. I’ve yet to start a game in the Championship, that’s my ultimate goal, I want to play as high as I can,” Thompson said.

“If I get the chance hopefully I’ll take it and be playing in the first team regularly.

“First and foremost he’s got to see me in training and see how I’ve progressed, make sure I’m ready for the games.

“When he chucks me in I’ll be ready.

“There’s always an option if things don’t work out here. I’ve come back here to play, this is my home club.

“But if it hasn’t worked out then there’s an option to go back to Portsmouth in January.

“My ultimate goal is to play for Millwall’s first team.

“I just want to play football, of course, everyone’s the same.

Everyone wants to play every week and get that Saturday buzz.

“If I can’t get it here then obviously there is an option to go there. We have to see how the next few weeks pan out and go from there.”

At the time we were going to press, Millwall were hoping to conclude a deal for their former player Ben Marshall.

Marshall scored three goals in sixteen league games for the Lions on loan from Wolves last season.

Norwich then beat Millwall to his permanent signing last summer.

It hasn’t worked out for Marshall with the Canaries, and he has made just four league appearance this season, the last in August.

told this week that a deal could happen ahead of the trip to Middlesbrough.

Meanwhile, Fred Onyedinma and Jiri Skalak were both absent from the match-day squad against Rovers, but Harris insists they are both in consideration for the Riverside clash.

Skalak could still leave on loan before the end of this window.

“Fred is in contention,” Harris said.

“It’s a balance with the loan players.

He had a successful spell at Wycombe where he really enjoyed himself.

“We had to leave Fred and Jiri out of the squad at the weekend due to other people having knocks going into the game and making sure we have cover in other positions.

“Fred and Jiri certainly come into contention for the weekend.”

SHAUN HUTCHINSON has admitted that Millwall have missed George Saville’s influence this season.

Saville left Millwall four games into the campaign and could come up against his former side when Millwall face Middlesbrough this Saturday.

Boro’s pursuit of Saville dragged on all through August before the clubs struck a deal on deadline day and Millwall signed Ryan Leonard as his replacement.

Saville failed to hold down a regular place in the side in the early part of his Boro career but has made his mark more recently.

Hutchinson stressed Millwall players hold no grudges against their former team-mate.

“Everyone loves him, he was a great guy to have around,” Hutchinson said. “He was a great guy on the pitch as well. Every dressing room needs that kind of character. He’s been missed.

“But he got a good move and we don’t hold anything against him.

He’ll chat to all of us because I think he enjoyed his time here.”

Saville scored ten league goals for Millwall last season.

“One thing with Sav is if you give him a chance to run off you or nick the ball he’ll be there at your feet straightaway,” Hutchinson added. “He’s a threat with his energy and his presence.

“When you were playing with him you always knew he was there, so I’m sure it’s the same effect playing against him.

“He’ll know our strengths as well. We’re looking forward to seeing him.”
