AN OFFICER awarded an OBE by the Queen for his work supporting victims of terrorism says he owes his career to a Peckham bobby who changed his mind about the police force.

Acting Detective Sergeant Zac Idun was awarded an OBE for services to victims of terrorism in London and abroad after leading the family liaison response following 2017’s London Bridge and Westminster attacks, and in Sousse, Tunisia, in 2015.

DS Idun joined the Met in 1993, aged 30, after a career in banking and business.

He paid tribute to the families he has met throughout his career, saying: “During my time in family liaison and involvement in terrorist investigations, I have been truly humbled by the sheer courage and strength of the families and

survivors we have assisted.

“I remain in awe of the many people we have supported who have suffered but survived the loss of the people dearest to them with both dignity and bravery.

“Also those who assisted investigations having witnessed traumatic events.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the police officer I met at Peckham Police Station in 1993, who encouraged me to join ‘the job’.

“I was actually curious to join because I was cynical about the police, but that officer spoke so openly and enthusiastically about the role that I felt compelled to change my vocation.

“Twenty-five years on, I can say hand-on-heart that it has been one of the best decisions in my life.

“Policing has proven to be an incredibly rewarding, challenging and satisfying career.

Battersea says it can be difficult to find homes for older dogs, but they are a lot less work than younger ones

A DOG that spent more than 100 days at Battersea Dogs and Cats home during her second stint at the rescue centre has finally found a loving home.

Daisy, a nine-year-old Mastiff cross, found herself back in Battersea eight years after her first stay with the charity.

As a young dog she was rehomed after two weeks, but this time spent 124 days without a single family offering to take her in; earning her the heart-breaking title of ‘the UK’s unluckiest dog’.

But after reading about Daisy’s plight online, Louise Daily and her two children came to the rescue and took Daisy home in December.

Louise said: “We first saw Daisy in an article about her being the unluckiest dog in the UK and couldn’t resist getting in touch with Battersea about her.

“We were looking for an older dog to adopt and love larger breeds, so she sounded perfect for us.”

“We’re so happy to have found her and to be able to welcome her into our family before Christmas.

Battersea’s centre manager, Steve Craddock, said it can be difficult to find homes for older dogs, but they make great pets.

“All too often we see people that come to Battersea looking for young dogs, but it can be easy to forget how much work a young dog can be and how much time, work and energy they require,” he said.

“Older dogs, like Daisy, make incredible pets and have a lifetime of love to give. We’d love to see more of our old dogs find the perfect retirement home.”

Shocked commuters: £10,000 for single to Gatwick

A TRAIN company has apologised after a glitch showed tickets costing £10,000 for a single journey from London Bridge to Gatwick.

The £10,000 ticket for the short Southern Rail service was spotted by

customer Lucy Watson on Wednesday morning.

The same journey via a Thameslink train showed up at only £11, however.

“Might go for Thameslink then, cheers,” wrote Ms Watson as she posted a picture showing the fare offerings on social media.

GAS WORKS LEAVE BUS PASSENGERS FUMING PECKHAM

COMMUTERS IN Peckham have been left fuming as eleven buses are diverted from Rye Lane during major gas works planned until January 2020.

The one million pound upgrade of SGN’s gas mains network started this Monday.

For the next thirteen months Rye Lane will be closed to all vehicles and cyclists except for deliveries, but open to pedestrians.

In that time, bus routes 12,37, 63, 78, 197, 343, 363, N63, N343, P12 and P13 will be diverted.

Commuters have slammed TfL for not planning any temporary stops nearby, lumping them with an extra ten to fifteen minute walk to catch a bus, with one resident tweeting TfL saying: “I would like an explanation please.

“The whole Rye Lane is closed for traffic, for a year and the buses are diverted of course.

“Why do we have to walk ten, fifteen minutes to get the bus?

Shopping centre will be bulldozed after traders move agreed

THE LAST hurdle in the way of Delancey’s plans to demolish Elephant and Castle shopping centre was removed this week after councillors approved its planning application for a temporary home for traders forced to move from the condemned site.

As the entire regeneration scheme depended on the Castle Square application going through, campaigners had hoped a ‘no’ vote would mean the entire regeneration scheme could be stopped on a technicality.

But Southwark Council’s planning committee greenlit proposals on Monday night after a decision was deferred last year due to uncertainty over affordability.

And in a win for campaigners, Delancey has reduced rent and said all relocating traders will pay no more than they do already in the centre.

Traders moving to Castle Square will pay a blanket £18 per square foot on first floor and £24 per square foot on the ground floor for the next five years while the new town centre is being built.

TfL updated its website last Friday and tweeted about the disruption to the service on Monday, but residents who regularly use the same stop have complained they had seen no signs advertising the planned work beforehand.

TfL says it is looking into where temporary stops can be safely placed, but finding suitable roads without increasing congestion has proved tricky.

All businesses on the road will stay open throughout the maintenance work, but there are fears trading will also be severely affected by the disruption, especially given they can only claim compensation from SGN after work has finished.

SGN says it will consider compensation claims from ‘small businesses who suffer a genuine loss of profit’.

Business owners believe lifting parking charges on Choumert Road and temporary bus stops nearer Rye Lane could help footfall. They also want to petition the government to reduce business rates for the affected area.

POLICE HAVE released a CCTV picture of a man they want to speak to as part of an investigation following reports of a bullet being fired through a house window in Kennington.

Officers were called to the “reckless and selfish act” at around 22.10pm on Wednesday, July 25 at a house on Opal Street, finding a bullet inside the address.

No-one was injured in the incident, which police said could have had “fatal consequences.”

Detectives, alongside specialist firearms officers, scoured the area and also uncovered a bullet casing in a carpark on the opposite side of the road.

CCTV footage has been studied by police leading to the release of the still containing a man they want to speak to in connection with the incident.

Detective Constable Melanie Burridge, of the Met’s Trident and Area Crime Command, said: "Nobody should have to feel unsafe in their own home and especially should not have their safety compromised by a gun being fired.

"This was a reckless and selfish act that could have had fatal consequences.”

She appealed for witnesses to get in touch saying: “Do you recognise him or know who he is?

“Call police with any information. We are ready to take your call."

‘SHOT FIRED AT HOUSE’ KENNINGTON

Man charged with Charlotte’s murder

THIRTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD Michael Rolle appeared in court on Saturday charged with murdering Camberwell mum Charlotte Huggins.

The 33-year-old was stabbed to death in the early hours of New Year's Day - the first person to be killed in London in 2019.

Police were called to the property on John Ruskin Street by paramedics at 4.20am to reports of a stabbing.

However despite the best efforts of the emergency services, Ms

Huggins’ life could not be saved and she was sadly pronounced dead at 4.50am.

A post-mortem gave the cause of death as a single stab wound.

Rolle of Pentworth House, Dulwich, was charged on Saturday, 5 January and appeared in custody at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court.

A second man, who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, has been released under investigation.

Two teens charged after spate of SE1 robberies

TWO TEENAGERS have been charged with a string of offences following a spate of moped robberies centred on the SE1 area over two days.

Police launched an urgent investigation after reports of two men entering an estate agent in St Gabriel Walk, threatening staff with a large knife and stealing their phones at around 4.50 pm on Thursday (January 3).

Police then had reports of two robbers making off on a moped before threatening a number of customers at a coffee shop in New Bridge Street in the City with a large knife and stealing a laptop.

Officers said they managed to link the two moped-enabled crimes to a series of four thefts and attempted thefts in the SE1 area around 1pm the following day.

Detectives arrested two males an hour later in Rotherhithe, recovering a knife, moped and clothing allegedly used in the robberies.

Frankie Batchelor, 18, of Lucey Way, Bermondsey, was charged with: four counts of robbery; two counts of using a vehicle without insurance; two counts of driving not in accordance with a licence; and aggravated vehicle taking.

He was also charged with criminal damage; possession of an offensive weapon; taking and driving away; attempted robbery; two counts of theft from a person and attempted theft from a person.

The eighteen-year-old was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Inner London Crown Court on Monday, February 4.

A fifteen-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also charged with offences including two counts of robbery; attempted robbery; three counts of theft from a person and three counts of attempted theft from person.

He was also charged with breach of a CBO and allowing to be carried on a stolen moped.

The boy is also due to appear at the Inner London Crown Court on Monday, February 4.

Warning to ‘hoarders’ Council buys commerical hub worth after house blaze £89 million ‘to fund frontline services’

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has bought an £89 million commercial complex in Shad Thames in what it called an investment to produce income for front line services.

The Courage Yard complex near Tower Bridge consists of seven buildings spread over 2.2 acres of land, including office, retail, and residential units.

The purchase was funded by a mixture of capital receipts, internal borrowing and external borrowing from the Public Works Loans Board, the council said.

However, Liberal Democrat councillors have requested an urgent meeting with council officers to explain the decision and said they were concerned at a lack of consultation with residents and ward councillors.

Council bosses predict the complex will net them £5million a year, which they say will go towards frontline services.

However the leader of the opposition Lib Dems, Cllr Anood Al-Samerai, said: “We have requested an urgent meeting with officers, as we’re concerned local residents and ward councillors were not consulted beforehand.

“We will be pushing the council to make sure they properly involve residents in their future plans for this

site.”

Cllr Mills said that the council expected the move to help replenish reduced income after the sale of council properties or the conversion of them into housing.

She added: “Over recent years a number of properties the council owns have been sold to help finance our substantial capital programme or we have developed them to deliver new council housing. This has reduced our income from commercial assets.

“During 2017 we purchased four properties in the borough with an established rental income of over £2.18million a year and we believe that Courage Yard will be another valuable asset for the council.”

The complex is the home of the technology company ZPG, which is behind the property site Zoopla and the utilities site u-Switch.

The site was previously owned by asset management firm Columbia Threadneedle.

Ombudsman ruled after woman left suicidal over freedom pass

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL cancelled a resident’s free disability travel for six weeks, leaving her unable to fetch her prescriptions while feeling suicidal, the Local Government Ombudsman has found.

The ruling - dated September 2018 but published last week - upheld a complaint by resident ‘Ms X’ that the council had removed her freedom pass without warning.

The confusion arose after the council told the woman, who has mental and

physical health issues, to renew her pass in October 2017.

She did not complete an initial online application amid receiving conflicting information from council officers about proof-of-identity forms and the pass was removed without notice at the end of January.

In its ruling the Ombudsman found: “Although Ms X delayed in submitting her application to renew her freedom pass, the Council acted with fault, it cancelled her existing pass without warning.

“There was also delay and confusion in dealing with the renewal application which caused Ms X unnecessary distress.”

The woman completed an application in

February but did not have her freedom pass reinstated until April, going six weeks without the travel concession.

In one exchange with the council in March, the resident told officials she was unable to get her prescriptions because of the lack of a pass.

“She is also running out of gas and electric,” recorded a council officer. They added: “She has mental health issues and is presently suicidal.”

The council paid the resident £100 in compensation and have given her a formal written apology for the errors.

It also said it will review the process to make sure freedom pass applications are easier to complete.

A BLAZE at a house in Walworth on Sunday morning has prompted a hoarding warning from firefighters – as they said the “high level” of hoarded material hampered their efforts to tackle the fire.

Around six engines and forty firefighters dealt with the house fire on Queen’s Row shortly before 7am on Sunday January 7. It is believed the blaze was caused by a candle igniting paper.

Luckily, as the house did not have working smoke alarms, the occupant discovered the fire among the hoarded materials himself, the brigade said.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson warned that the sheer amount of things in the house would have made it difficult to escape the blaze, which damaged half of the first floor.

made it difficult to get out of the smoke filled property had the fire developed further.”

The man, who had managed to leave the house before fire crews arrived, was rushed to hospital for smoke inhalation.

“Blazes in cluttered homes can spread like wildfire, putting those who live in them at serious risk of injury or worse and potentially endangering our firefighters who go to tackle them”, the spokesperson warned.

“The fire is believed to have been caused by a tea light igniting paper or card. Make sure you never leave candles unattended and always away from materials.”

The London Fire Brigade said the fire was under control by 9.02am.

Firefighters from Old Kent Road, Peckham, Brixton, West Norwood and Deptford fire stations attended the scene.

Town Hall plans ‘unfit for purpose’

Children, Schools and Adult Care told the News: “I am so sorry for the distress that this has caused, we have of course issued a full apology and compensation.

“I have investigated this case and we are now reviewing the process to make sure that lessons are learned with the clear aim of making applications simpler and providing more support, to help vulnerable people access the service.”

The Ombudsman has since closed the complaint.

THE WALWORTH Society says both proposals for Walworth Town Hall’s redevelopment after it was gutted by fire are unfit for purpose.

The heritage group claims neither proposal from private developers will create a ‘publicly accessible cultural hub’ and is refusing to rate each bid before the end of the consultation period, on January 21.

It claims current plans are ‘in essence commercial developments with some community access’ and will not inspire visitors from further afield.

Instead, the group is petitioning for a permanent heritage and culture centre to be created on the site to house the Newington Library, Cuming Museum and a reference library.

THIRTEEN PUPILS from Southwark were able to go to university last year with financial help from the council’s ‘Southwark Scholars’ scheme.

Ninteen-year-old Hilliam Tung, currently in his first year studying maths and computer science at Imperial College, said he found out about the scheme after searching online for bursaries, as he was worried about the financial pressures of going to university.

“My family has faced a number of hardships and I really went through some of the darkest times during my GCSEs,” he said. “To think that the Southwark Council is willing to look out for students who've gone through difficult circumstances, both academically and socially, by offering such a scholarship, just makes me thankful that people can understand the struggles of coming from a low-income background.

“The scheme has given me a lot of confidence and less stress when it comes to taking on the many opportunities I have access to at Imperial, worrying less about the overwhelming debt from student loans and spending more time focusing on getting through my course and participating in student life.”

His experience was echoed by Lauren Young, 20, who is now at the University of Essex studying history and sociology.

She described getting the scholarship as a ‘huge weight off my shoulders’.

A NEW library has opened in Dulwich, and is almost twice the size of its predecessor.

Grove Vale library had a grand opening on December 19, with books, e-books and e-magazines, internet and WiFi, and space for groups and clubs including children’s story-time and rhyme-time sessions.

Local artist Lasma Liepina has created a large-scale artwork above the entrance, called History Made in Dulwich, inspired by nature, history and architecture across a timeline from 967, when East Dulwich was a dill meadow, through to the present day.

In a statement sent to the News, the council said: “In difficult times, when so many local councils are having to make tough decisions and close their libraries, Southwark has gone beyond investing in its excellent, existing provision.

“This new library was made possible by working with Northridge Capital; it is part of their new development, which also includes housing and a Marks and Spencer store, all adjacent to East Dulwich station.”

She is now friends with another student at Essex who is funded by the same scheme.

Since the initiative started in 2011, 88 youngsters from Southwark have achieved their ambition of studying in higher education despite the growing cost and debt of attaining university degree.

There are high hopes they will continue to give back to their area after graduating.

Hilliam said he wants to set up his own hedge fund and help schools, youth groups and social start-ups in Southwark after he graduates.

“Having the support from councillors and people in positions of authority for setting up such a project has reinforced my perseverance to want to do more than just getting through life,” he said.

Joshua Moses, now 22 and working for an education charity, graduated from Birkbeck, University of London with a law degree last year after being supported by the scheme.

He says the scholarship has ‘definitely given me a renewed commitment to Southwark’ and is encouraging other school leaders to apply.

He said: “If you are considering applying you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

“I’d say do something today that your future self will thank you for.”

Mayor funding is giving young men a voice in the fight against knife crime

A YOUTH offending officer working in schools across Southwark to prevent at-risk kids getting trapped in a cycle of knife crime says the stereotype that boys don’t want to talk about their feelings is untrue.

Hannah is one of the officers whose six-week long intervention workshops in schools across the borough has been given a funding boost from Sadiq Khan’s Young Londoners Fund.

The project is focused on intervention, and is inspired by the public health model the News has championed, which treats violence like an infectious disease, working on the assumption that it spreads as more people come into contact with it.

Hannah says her work focuses on how young people feel and their day-to-day lives, saying that in their experience a lot of young people at risk of becoming involved in knife crime are reacting to trauma.

“We try to use small groups to do those sessions where they can

really have a chance to tell their story and to explore the specific issues for them,” she said.

“If possible we try to do it in friendship groups so that those discussions can carry on outside the sessions.

“It can be quite powerful for teenage boys to hear their friends talk about their feelings and have an open and honest discussion about the challenges for young people.”

She believes young men in particular, who are often described as a group reluctant to open up, are keen to share their feelings.

“We don’t have a problem with engagement in these sessions, I think they don’t have the opportunity to speak to adults about these things very often but they want to.

“There seems to be a narrative in society that young boys don’t want to talk and they don’t talk about feelings but given a safe enough space I think they do,” she said.

The project will receive £150,000 throughout the next three years from the Mayor’s Young Londoners Fund, which will also help it expand into Lambeth for the first time.

ST FRANCIS Catholic Primary School in Peckham topped the leader board for the inaugural Beat the Street competition, which saw the people of Southwark complete nearly 40 thousand miles of outdoor exercise in under two months.

From September to November, Beat Boxes were placed across Southwark in Peckham, Old Kent Road, Faraday and North Walworth where players could tap their key fobs to win points in a competition aimed at getting children and adults to do more exercise.

Six-and-a-half thousand people in total played the game, racking up nearly 38,000 miles on foot, scooter or bike.

Students at St Francis were both leaders in the total number of points earned and the average score per pupil.

Claire Gillespie, deputy, head teacher at St Francis, said: “Winning Beat the Street has been fantastic. The children, their families and even staff were so enthusiastic about tapping the beat boxes throughout the competition - it's a shame that it has now come to an end.

“Our families loved attending the various events in local parks and were very eager to tap when double points were up for grabs. We are trying hard to encourage the children to walk to school, and this initiative definitely gave them the incentive. Looking at the children's results it's great to see how many miles they've walked. One child in our school scored 10,830 points and came first in Southwark. This has been a brilliant experience for us as a school. We look forward to playing again in the future.”

They reached first place with an incredible 148,855 points in total, and were awarded £300 of Decathlon vouchers to spend on sports and fitness equipment as their prize, with runners up were Walworth schools Michael Faraday and English Martyrs getting £200 and £100 vouchers.

Highshore School, Peckham, for children with special educational needs achieved impressive results, as its average score per pupil was the second highest out of all schools that took part, with an average of 269 points, covering more than 900 miles in total within six weeks.

In the community group league, Silverfit beat Good Together, Bedstars, and the Southwark Green Party with a total of 29,825 points and an average of 1,656 per person.

Beat the Street is one of the council’s many initiatives to get people more active in Southwark, a borough with high levels of childhood obesity and inactivity.

restorative justice.

“At a time when hate crime has sharply risen and the criminal justice system is

struggling to deal with the impact, restorative justice is a quietly radical and effective means of addressing these issues.

“We will be seeking to work in partnership with equality organisations operating in London to spread awareness and understanding of restorative justice and to trial and learn about practical ways that restorative approaches can

work to support LGBTQ+ victims of hate crime.”

Alison Gowman, Chair of the City of London Corporation’s City Bridge Trust Committee, said: “It’s clear from the many stories of those that have been through restorative justice that it has many benefits and can be a really effective aid in the recovery process for survivors of crime.

PARKING FINE FOR MUM-TO-BE OVER A ONE MINUTE DELAY

A DULWICH man has slammed TfL after he was handed a £130 parking fine while waiting to pick up his nine-month-pregnant partner from a delayed train.

Andrew Potts, 41, was waiting outside West Dulwich station for his partner Jenna, 32, who was nine months pregnant at the time on September 12. The couple’s child was born just a week later.

When the couple got back from the hospital with their new-born, they found they had been fined £65 for contravening the two-minute limit on the bay.

However, after being contacted by the News, TfL said it would cancel all fines as a goodwill gesture to the couple.

The pair decided to appeal the charge after being told their mitigating circumstances of a late train while being heavily pregnant were not enough to have the fine cancelled.

The father-of-two said that the fines amount meant that he was unable to buy his daughter, 4, the bike she’d wanted for Christmas.

He told the News: “The thing that bothered us the most initially was that it

was a one-minute overstay. The train was a bit late and she was heavily pregnant.”

Mr Potts said that he was originally told by the agency that his car had been parked in the picking up bay a minute longer than the allowed limit.

In a fifty page submission to an adjudicator last month, TfL provided evidence that he had been in the bay for five minutes, leading to their appeal being unsuccessful.

However, to the couple’s shock, the fine had doubled from £65 to £130, despite their appealing within the 28 day timeframe.

“The concern is that other people will be appealing fines and then will be slammed with a higher fine,” Mr Potts said. “In the grand scheme of things it’s not a big amount of money, but it’s the principle of it. People should be reasonable about this – don’t then say we’re going to charge you more if you decide to appeal.”

Paul Cowperthwaite, TfL's General Manager for Road User Charging, said: "We enforce traffic regulations with the sole purpose of keeping traffic moving safely and efficiently for the benefit of everyone.

“As a goodwill gesture to Mr Potts, we have cancelled the PCN.”

Chance for kids to try out new sports for FREE

THE CASTLE Centre is launching free activities for kids to get more young people exercising.

The ‘Let’s Get Physical’ campaign, funded by Southwark Council, will see hour-long sessions during term time for eight to fourteen-year-olds from 4-5pm every Monday, launching on January 7.

Each week will focus on a different type of activity not always on school curriculums, including dodgeball, handball, tag rugby and boxercise.

A new report from Sport England revealed that one in six children do not get the recommended amount of exercise every day of the week, with 2.3 million doing less than 30 minutes per day.

“Sport is more than exercise and has the ability to teach key skills such as teamwork and understanding as well as bringing people together to foster a sense of community” says Everyone Active Sports Development Manager James Tierney.

“We are really excited to launch this initiative and hope it will be a lot of fun for all those who take part.”

POLICE HAVE released a picture of three people they want to identify after two men were attacked while holding hands on New Year’s Day.

Officers were called to the unprovoked assault, which took place on the Southbank near the National Theatre, at 14.30pm after the pair were attacked by four men.

The attack left the victims, aged 28 and 31, with facial injuries and bruising but luckily they did not require hospital treatment.

The four suspects are all described as white, aged in their mid-twenties and wearing hooded tops.

They left in the direction of the OXO Tower.

Police released a CCTV still of three males they would like to speak to in connection with the incident.

Officers said the incident was being treated as a hate crime.

REPORT ON CONTROVERSIAL SHAKE UP FOR RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATIONS

A CONTROVERSIAL panel tasked with improving how the council communicates with tenants and residents has published its first recommendations – including some big shake ups in tenants’ funds and area housing forums.

The resident involvement review aims to bring what the council says is a 30year-old structure up to date with online tools and social media.

The review panel has now published a report outlining recommendations for the public to share their views on until the end of January.

Key recommendations include making sure all tenants and residents, whether on an estate with an existing TRA or not, have a face-to-face meeting with council housing reps at least once a year, with at least fourteen days’ notice given beforehand.

The panel also wants to scrap area housing forums, saying the current set-up is out of date and requires residents to attend dozens of ‘off-putting and und unsustainable’ meetings a year to take part.

It recommends that five new area housing forums are set up mirroring the council’s own housing management areas, claiming this would reduce

meetings from 96 to 20 per year across the borough and save time and money. It also wants TRAs constitutions revised ‘to reduce jargon’.

A previous report was critical of how tenant and leaseholder funds - a percentage of collected rent and service charges put back into tenant and leaseholder groups – has been spent.

The panel backed up these findings, saying there was not enough evidence of outcomes and opportunities for local communities from funded work.

And Southwark Group of Tenants Organisations (STGO), the main critic of the review, was described as having ‘weak’ outcomes by the panel, though it conceded ‘this is not necessarily a criticism of performance just that performance is not clearly captured’.

The panel wants local and boroughwide funding pots set up, with a community and TRA funds focused on

supporting individual TRAs, digital training, welfare signposting, and anything that improves quality of life and togetherness on estates. Smaller groups who are not formally established as TRAs or TMOs would still be eligible to apply.

But STGO criticised the consultation process, with a spokesperson telling the News this week: “The Resident Involvement Review Panel Report was uploaded to the Southwark Council website just before 5pm on January 4.

“We have been told that consultation

will close on January 31. This leaves under four weeks to respond.

The report was circulated via email on January 4, with around 50 per cent of Southwark households not on the internet and information not received in the post this is not sufficient time to respond.

“Tenants and residents were also unable to prepare an informed response until today as one quarter of the panel meeting notes were missing from the Southwark Council website.

Second highest syphilis rates

SOUTHWARK HAS the second highest rate of syphilis in London according to new figures, putting it among the highest in the country.

According to the stats published on Friday by Public Health England, the borough saw 348 cases in 2017.

However this was dwarfed by Lambeth, which witnessed 498 cases.

Men who have sex with men (‘MSM’) were most at risk of getting syphilis, accounting for 90% of all London syphilis cases in 2017.

The research’s authors said the continued increase in cases was “particularly concerning” because it comes “despite active campaigns targeted towards MSM to promote condom provision and use, and where a fully functioning sexual health care system provides open access to testing and treatment.”

An increase in heterosexual syphilis cases across the capital was also labelled “concerning”, because of the risk of transmitting syphilis from mothers to unborn children.

High risk behaviour including not using a condom, use of hook-up apps like Grindr, and chemsex – using drugs before or during sex – were the main drivers of syphilis increase.

Nearly half of all the syphilis cases diagnosed in the country throughout the year were also diagnosed in London.

We need to tackle violence as a public health issue M OST OF us who live in Southwark think it’s a great place to live.

Vibrant and close to the heart of London, it has so much going for it.

But there’s an issue which casts a shadow over our borough, and indeed our great city, and that is the increase in the number of murders.

2018 saw the highest number of people killed in London in a decade.

Last year 132 people were killed.

And for each one of the victims there are devastated parents, husbands, wives, children, friends and communities left behind.

The causes of this rise in violence are complex and have been developing over a number of years.

Many young people involved in crime will have problems at home, been expelled from school at a young age, or themselves have been victims of crime.

For every young man who ends up in the dock accused of a killing, there are parents, teachers, neighbours and many others who’ve seen the warning signs and who’ve been unable to prevent the downward drift into crime.

What is clear is that there needs to be early intervention, to step in

before the youngster is lost to lawlessness.

That means better information for parents who are worried about a child but don’t know who to turn to. It means a quick response and effective support when parents do call out for help with a youngster who’s getting into trouble. It means more activities for young people so that they don’t drift into trouble. It means schools having the resources to mentor and support pupils showing warning signs - rather than simply sorting out “the problem” by excluding them.

Excluded children are far more likely to get drawn into crime. It means a higher level of support for young people leaving care.

And we need to ensure that all the agencies have the resources they need to step in before a problem develops into a crisis. That means the child and adolescent mental health services as well as the police.

We need to ensure that the health services, from GPs to hospital A & E Departments, are quick to co-ordinate when they suspect a youngster is getting involved in crime.

This approach would be what is described as a “public health” approach to youth crime. Seeing it in the same way as an infectious

disease, treating people early but above all prevention being better than cure.

Lewisham and Deptford’s MP Vicky Foxcroft has been pressing for this approach by setting up the Youth Violence Commission. Croydon Central MP Sarah Jones has set up an all-party group of MPs on knife crime - of which I’m a member. And the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, is setting up a new Violence Reduction Unit to address the root causes of violence.

But there can be no doubt that all this work is hampered by the cuts to school budgets, to youth services and to the police.

Southwark has lost 200 police officers and Police Community Support Officers since 2010. Eight years of cuts from the Tory government have undoubtedly made the problems worse.

There has, rightly, been a big focus on the lives of young men lost to gang violence. But we must never lose sight of the fact that there also remains a persistent high number of women being killed by their husbands or boyfriends - domestic homicide.

But too many people are dying violent deaths. It needs working together, but it must mean more resources from government and an end to the cuts. Otherwise the horrific death toll will just get worse.

Crossword TENANTS AND RESIDENT ASSOCIATIONS ARE THE BACKBONE OF OUR COMMUNITY, BUT MORE PEOPLE NEED TO GET INVOLVED

T

ENANT AND Resident Associations (TRAs), and the communal halls on their estates, have been the backbone to life in Southwark for decades, which is why the Resident Involvement Panel report is so important.

TRAs give residents a voice, and help scrutinise the decisions that affect our day-to-day lives.

They work with the council, police, and others to make our corner of London better for everyone. From experience, we know they also throw great parties, and give families, new mums, kids, and OAPs much-needed support.

Southwark is often said to have the strongest residents’ movement in London, with democratically elected people dedicating their time to be pillars of support for their community.

But not everyone living in a council home is on an estate and these people need to be included too.

With many people increasingly happy to communicate online and unable to attend regular, formal meetings, the council’s review into how it communicates with residents is needed.

Alarm bells have rung for campaigners, who say other boroughs have seen TRA halls lost to redevelopment and say changes have made it harder to scrutinise council decisions. But it is heartening to see recommendations put forward by Southwark Council’s panel, including continuing to support TRAs and encouraging new ones to be set up.

In a time of regeneration, as private housing and new developments increasingly jostle alongside council homes, there is even more need for resident associations and resident halls to have more of a role in bringing everyone together, especially those affected by knife crime and welfare cuts.

Young people take over children’s hospital Y

oung people took over Evelina London Children’s Hospital for a day as part of a national event.

Almost 20 young people, including the hospital’s patients and students from Sacred Heart secondary school in Southwark, south London, were given the opportunity to run parts of Evelina London during the Takeover Challenge.

The Takeover Challenge is a national event led by the Children’s Commissioner for England, which gives young people the chance to shadow jobs, get involved in decision making and offer their opinions on key issues.

Activities at Evelina London included a takeover of the hospital’s radio station, Radio Lollipop, which involved young people taking song requests from patients and interviewing staff.

Shanaya Hamilton, 15, a pupil at Sacred Heart secondary school, took part in the Radio Lollipop takeover.

She said: “Being able to DJ and speak directly to patients on the hospital’s wards was a lot of fun.

“I also really enjoyed interviewing staff and finding out about their jobs.

I learnt a lot about the many different types of jobs you could do at a

THE STAFF Friends and Family Test is a short, national survey which enables NHS staff to give feedback about their own organisation.

1,305 Guy’s and St Thomas’ staff completed the Staff Friends and Family Test, and the national results were published on 22 November by NHS England.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ scored much higher than the national average:

• 93% of staff said they are ‘likely’ or ‘very likely’ to recommend the Trust as a place to be treated – higher than the national average of 81%

POP STAR Jay Aston, who sprang to fame with the band Bucks Fizz, has thanked staff at Guy’s Hospital following a successful operation to treat mouth cancer earlier this year.

The singer returned to the ward where she spent ten days recuperating after a seven-hour operation to remove a section of her tongue and lymph nodes.

Jay, 57, was joined by bandmates Cheryl Baker and Mike Nolan who met the team that cared for her during her stay in July.

Now cancer free, Jay had a section of the left side of her tongue removed from front to back.

Surgeons Alastair Fry and Luke Cascarini performed microvascular surgery to successfully transplant tissue from her thigh to reconstruct her tongue.

Around 6,800 people are diagnosed with mouth cancer each year in the UK – more than 18 every day.

Being in this play is a real joy for Mary Stewart: ‘I have always been a huge Arthur Miller fan. I studied his plays in high school and fell in love with his incredible language.’

She also feels ‘incredibly lucky to be the first woman to play this role - ‘which was written for a man’ Adding that the new brother and sister dynamic has introduced ‘humour and pathos into the play’.

For such a serious Miller work there appears to be a lot of fun going on. When I asked about rehearsals I was told, ‘I am having the time of my life. The cast is great and I love working with Phil Wilmott(Director). He is very smart and rigorous but also a lot of fun…The process is very collaborative, and David Mildon who plays my brother is fabulous to work with.’ Well, that all sounds extremely encouraging and all the more tempting to go and see the finished work. But if you’re still not convinced, Mary wanted to end on this: ‘I think our audiences will really enjoy this play - I think they will see parallels not just to the current situation in the US but to Brexit as well. It couldn't be more timely!’

Into the jaws of the Enemy

‘It was a wonderful place to grow up,’ she enthuses. ‘It was a bit like the town in Jaws, which is incredibly fun because I am now playing a character who closely resembles the mayor in that film.’

The character Ms Stewart will be playing is Mayor Stockman in Arthur Miller's An Enemy of the People, which is currently in rehearsal.

The young Mary first stepped on to a stage while dancing in her early years but says she became interested in theatre whilst at high school, and, with the support of her ‘creative’ parents, studied the craft in Virginia and then New York. The older Mary now finds herself living in the Cotswolds after her actor husband joined the RSC: ‘It was a really big leap but we have escaped the horror that is Trump,’ she tells me in a sentence that reveals so much more.

Trump aside, the actor is now in a play that could be seen as a tale about all that is wrong in current US politics - where a President denies climate change and calls the press the enemy of the people -

While the groundbreaking work done there was kept largely a secret until the 70s, we of course now know that these codebreakers saved millions of lives and cut short the length of the Second World War. Illicit Signals Bletchley aims to breath life into their secretive stories, planting the audience right there with them.

Upon arrival there is enough time to sign a form, swearing you to secrecy, before you begin work at Bletchley.

You are then allocated to your ‘huts’ by name. And then it is off you go to either hut 6, 8 or the Cottage, where the first half of the evening is spent codebreaking intercepted, encrypted messages. While each message is seemingly unimportant, once decoded, using your useful new cypher skills, and put together with the work from the other huts, clues about the Third Reich’s navy start to appear.

All of this code cracking chaos is

cracking under the pressure; man in charge Dilly Knox’s (David Alwyn) deteriorating health and tea-cosy wearing, and finally Alan Turing’s ‘indecency’, thinly veiled only by Joan Clarke (Edward Cartwright and Amelia Stephenson), all come under scrutiny as the evening progresses.

Following these characters through one of Bletchley Park’s most pivotal moments in such an accurate and detailed set, lends a great deal of authenticity to the production, making the experience even more poignant. As fun as the interactive codebreaking is, as the evening draws to a close it is pertinent that the focus is left on the true stories of the men and women that inhabited Bletchley Park during WW2 and their mainly unsung and unseen, invaluable contributions to the world.

Cigarettes were introduced into Britain from a shed in a Walworth man’s garden

T’S JANUARY: the season for ‘giving up’. Bad habits and secret chocolate stashes, be gone! And for those of you giving up smoking this New Year, spare a curse for Robert Gloag, who lived in Walworth in the nineteenth century, who is to blame for your cigarette cravings. The News delved into archives to re-tell this little-known fact, orginally written Emma Ailes…

The first ready-rolled cigarettes to be sold in England – sparking what is today a multi-billion pound industry – were made in a shed in the back garden of No.12 Boyson Road.

The cigarette, like the use of tobacco in all its forms, is originally a South American invention.

But although it seems to have been introduced into Europe by Spanish travellers, two wars had to be fought to bring the cigarette close to our doorstep.

In the battle of Acre, during Napolean’s Egyptian campaign, Suleiman Bey’s artillerymen were longing for their customary big pipes, and some genius among them hit on the idea of rolling a little tobacco in a piece of fine Indian paper used for gunpowder spills, and the first ‘roll-your-own’ cigarette was born.

The habit spread throughout the Turkish Empire and crossed the frontiers into Russia, where it was taken up enthusiastically by the upper circles of the Tsarist society. It spread to thrifty France: rolling cigarettes was so much cheaper than buying cigars!

Not ones to miss out on a moneyspinner, the government there took advantage of the new craze and in 1843 set up a cigarette factory. Napoleon III was reputedly the greatest cigarette smoker of his time: he smoked as many as 50 a day (back then an enormous number), and it is reported that he watched the battle of Solferino while chain smoking and muttering: “Poor creatures, poor creatures! What a terrible thing is war.”

Yet it was far away in the din and smoke of the Crimean War that the future of England’s tobacco industry was starting to

take shape in the mind of one British soldier.

Robert Peacock Gloag, a Scot of the Mcleaod clan, was a tobacco salesman living in Walworth who joined the army when the Crimean War broke out.

Though only 30 years of age, Gloag was given the great responsibility of being ‘lent’ to the Turks as a Paymaster-General of the Turkish contingent.

It was in this capacity that he saw Russian prisoners, Frenchmen and Turks “rolling tobacco in paper and lighting the tubes and smoking them”, as he later recalled.

When he returned to Walworth in 1856, Gloag built a small workshop in the backyard of his house at 12 Boyson Road: the first cigarette factory in Britain.

He hired a staff made up from local girls, and had them trained by some Russians in the art of making cigarettes, with one inch of rough cherry wood drilled through for a mouth piece, and wrapped in dark tobacco leaf. He called them ‘Cherry Tipped’.

His first real ‘brand’, however, were his ‘Sweet Threes’, so called because they were sold for a halfpenny in a little packet of pink-on-white paper.

These were two and a quarter inches long and made of light-coloured leaf in thick white paper, with a minute cardboard tip.

When rivals had begun to wrest business from Gloag by means of perfumed cigarettes, Robert added an inscription to his packets, which read: “These cigarettes are made of Pure Tobacco and not flavoured with common scent so injurious to health.”

He also began to develop other brands: ‘Little Tom Thumb’, ‘Straight Cut’ and ‘Forest Gems’, all of which contained only Turkish tobacco, which he regarded as the most suitable type for this purpose.

Business was brisk, and by 1860, he had around 150 girls, all of whom were sworn to secrecy about his production methods.

They liked the work – besides, it was one of the very few respectable and not too disagreeable ways in which a girl of the

lower classes could work for a living.

Each girl made around 260 cigarettes an hour (a modern machine makes around 60,000).

Gloag acquired more houses in Boyson Road and converted them into workshops.

The fashion for smoking cigarettes spread among the aristocracy.

Ladies began to smoke (some had been heavy smokers before – but of cigars and clay pipes), and the habit found addicts even at the Court of St. James, despite Queen Victoria’s violent dislike of smoking in any form.

One firm were allowed to call themselves “Cigarette Manufacturers to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales”; cigarettes were the cause of some family disputes at the Royal Palace as the result of which the Prince was usually ‘gated’ for breaking his mother’s rule.

Her dislike of smoking was said to be such that she required a certificate from the Guard each day to state that smoking had not taken place in the Royal Palace.

At Windsor, royal guests used to lie fulllength on the floor in the privacy of their bedrooms, puffing the smoke up the chimney so that the Queen wouldn’t catch the smell.

The Princess of Wales (later Queen Alexandra) caused a sensation when she served cigarettes at a ladies’ luncheon in the 1880s.

The Queen was not alone in her hatred of the habit. Headlines such as this were not unusual:

Experts warned that mankind “should smoking become prevalent among girls and young women as it is at present among boys and young men…there would be bred an inferior and degenerate race, ultimate extermination would result.

Prisons, reform schools and asylums would be filled to overflowing, for the cigarette is, undoubtedly, the maker of criminals”.

But despite some public backlash, Gloag was by now a successful – and rich - Victorian businessman. Each morning he made the round of his customers, mostly tobacconists, riding on a smart dogcart – an impressive figure with long whiskers, steel –rimmed spectacles, and a gold Albert watch-chain stretched across his chequered waistcoat.

He even founded a church in his street St Stephen’s Church in Boyson Road – the first church to be built from cigarette smokers’ money.

But as fast as Gloags rose to fame and fortune, it fell away into obscurity again.

Although Gloag lived to the age of 65, until 1891, he let his son, Frederick Robert Martin Gloag, take charge of the business in the 1860s.

Frederick did not believe very much in

cigarettes. He switched production more and more to cigars, especially his ‘Brilliants’, which became very well known through lavish advertising. But he made a mistake by letting the cigarette business slip out of his hands.

While the Gloags lost confidence in their own ‘invention’, Britain’s smoking habits were changing gradually and to an extent which neither father nor son could have forseen.

Frederick’s misjudgment of the situation can be seen from his attitude towards cigarette cards, which are thought to have been invented by Gloag elder.

Until about 1880, many cigarette brands were sold in paper containers stiffened with little pieces of cardboard, which were either left blank or had the name of the firm printed on one side.

Gloag had the idea of using the other side for pictures which smokers might want to collect.

This he did first with his ‘Citamora’ packages. Frederick, however, returned to the cheaper pictureless cardboard while other manufacturers took up the idea, wresting more and more business from the firm of Gloag, until it finally disappeared.

THE DULWICH Hamlet committee have orchestrated yet another competition designed to encourage local children to participate in sport.

In December, this column covered the committee’s Dulwich Hamlet Christmas Card competition, and the club’s thirst for community action appears unquenched even by the particularly sweet Christmas that it has enjoyed.

Rob Hyneman, deputy head of Cobourg Primary School and organiser-in-chief of both competitions, lifted the lid on the committee’s latest endeavour.

Last month, the National League Trust organised a regional youth tournament for all of the clubs in the National League (including North and South). However, the competition – aimed at girls and boys

– is not intended for academy sides.

Instead each club is to be represented by a primary school local to them.

Dulwich Hamlet decided to enter both a girls’ and a boys’ team. So, all Southwark primary schools were invited to participate in a six-a-side tournament which would decide who can really boast to be best in the borough.

There was unprecedented demand and ten teams (five boys’ teams, five girls’ teams) went through to the finals day, which was held on December 14 at the Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Sports Facility near Elephant and Castle.

The winner of the boys’ competition was Bessemer Grange and the winner of the girls’ was St Joseph’s Camberwell.

The winning primary schools will represent Hamlet, playing under the club’s name and in its famous pink and blue strip, in a regional competition and, if they progress, a national competition.

The national contest will culminate at the National League play-off final at

Wembley in May. The final of the schools competition will be played beforehand on the Wembley pitch and the kids are invited to watch the play-off final afterwards.

Rob was quick to acknowledge the “amazing” level of skill on show from such young talents, but was eager not to raise expectations too high.

“There’s a fair way to go, I’m not saying the school teams that won our competition are going to go all the way, but it’s a nice carrot to have.”

All of the teams who took part in the competition have been invited to a Dulwich Hamlet game as a ‘thank you’ for taking part. Bessemer Grange and St Joseph’s will also parade their trophies as Southwark champions on the pitch at Champion Hill.

Rob outlined the significant benefits that the tournament has brought about from a community perspective. “It’s important for Dulwich to link back up with local schools – we’ve been out of the borough

for quite a long time so coming back in and running the competition rebuilds that partnership.”

He also emphasised the positive impact that the tournament has had on the local children. “In my personal view, though there’s lots of debate over it, kids need a chance to play competitive sport – it’s all part of the learning process. When they get into adult life it’s a competitive world so they need to understand that you’re not always going to win and that sometimes you will lose. Indeed sometimes it’s good to lose, as that’s how you improve.

“The kids who took part loved the day and what was really nice is that even the schools that were knocked out earlier in the competition stayed for the rest of the day to watch and support.

“The sportsmanship that was on show was fantastic – the kids were congratulating and consoling each other, and the whole day was played in really good spirit.

“What came out of it is that Cobourg

has now made links with a few other schools including Judith Kerr and Dulwich Woods who want to continue organising football competitions and even expand to Kwik cricket and handball.

“It was really nice seeing kids from lots of different primary schools come together in one big event. It was an event where everyone got along – there was a real community feel to it.”

Community initiatives such as these are what make Dulwich Hamlet such a special club. Even through times of hardship, the club is committed to encouraging local children to get active and engage in healthy competition.

In addition, judging from (surely unbiased) eyewitness reports of the exceptional skill levels on show, the tournament may be an excellent investment on the pitch as well as off it.

Who knows, perhaps these competitions will be the making of the Hamlet players of the future.

A ROB Brown double sent Fisher through in the third round of the SCEFL Challenge Cup on Tuesday night.

Dean Harrison’s side were behind at St Paul’s after Jimmy Matthews’ goal for Snodland in the 32nd minute, but Brown equalised on the stroke of half-time.

And Brown got the winner eleven minutes from time to clinch the tie.

Last weekend, Fisher drew 1-1 at

Deal Town in the SCEFL Premier Division to preserve their slim goal-difference lead at the top of the table.

The visitors went behind 29 minutes in but rescued a point ten minutes from time through Luke Haidarovic.

Fisher are locked on 47 points with Corinthian at the top of the table, with Beckenham Town a point back.

Harrison’s side are back in league action in Rotherhithe this Saturday.

Bearsted are the visitors to St Paul’s for a 3pm kick-off.

Sheriff rules to send Hamlet through DULWICH HAMLET put their disappointing league form behind them to reach the London Senior Cup semi-final on Tuesday night.

Hamlet, who have lost their last three National League South games, were behind at Barking at half-time before Dipo Akinyemi’s header brought them level.

Gavin Rose included three new signings in his side and saw one of them, Decarrey Sheriff, put the visitors 2-1 up.

And Sheriff ensured Hamlet would go through with a late header.

Last Saturday, only the Bath fans in the latest record crowd at Champion Hill went home happy after a 2-0 defeat for the hosts.

After breaking their record on Boxing Day, 3,104 were in attendance as Tom Smith put the visitors in front in the 73rd minute.

And Bath sealed the points when Michael Chambers put through his own net with nine minutes left.

Hamlet are seventeenth in the league ahead of their trip to Hampton & Richmond Borough this Saturday.

MILLWALL COMMUNITY Trust and Millwall FC once again demonstrated its support for 'Crisis', the national charity for homeless people, during their week-long Christmas campaign between 24th29th December 2018.

For six days over Christmas, Crisis opened centres across the country where guests enjoyed hot food, had a free haircut, received health care and advice, learn new skills as well as be entertained and enjoy loads of fun activities which included free football sessions provided by Millwall Community Trust.

Crisis work directly with thousands of homeless people every year. They provide vital

help so that people can rebuild their lives and are supported out of homelessness for good.

Crisis offer one to one support, advice and courses for homeless people in 12 areas across England, Scotland and Wales. How they help someone depends on their individual needs and situation. It could be with finding a home and settling in, getting new skills and finding a job, or help with their health and wellbeing. Crisis uses research to find out how best to improve their services, but also to find wider solutions to homelessness. Together with homeless people and Crisis supporters, Crisis campaign for the changes needed to end homelessness for good.

Community Trust’s various programmes take a well-earned rest over the festive period, a team of Millwall Community Trust coaches volunteered their time to spend six days running free football coaching sessions across two sites in Bermondsey at the City of London Academy and Harris Academy Bermondsey. The week-long football schedule begun on Christmas Eve. Guests were also treated to complimentary match tickets from Millwall FC to their boxing day fixture versus Reading which the Lions won 10. Towards the end of the week, an annual Christmas inter centre football tournament was hosted by Arsenal Community, which see a Millwall team from Harris Academy Bermondsey lift

The team itself showed togetherness, an appreciation for life and for the people around them. For the majority, it felt like a game that neither side seemed particularly bothered about.

The opening half hour was about as uneventful a football match as you'd ever wish you see. No shots for either side and the majority of the meagre 5,307 inside The Den were probably already dreading the thought of doing it all over again.

Despite the hectic Christmas and New Year period, the Millwall boss opted to make just two changes from the win at Ipswich Town five days earlier.

Alex Pearce – who joined from Derby County on loan until the end of the season late last week – immediately came into the side in place of James Meredith.

Murray Wallace was rewarded for his performance at Portman Road, though he shifted across to left back, a position he has played previously this season and done himself justice in.

Meanwhile, Jiri Skalak – who missed the majority of the festive period with a bacterial infection – was handed a first start since November 3 in place of Shane Ferguson. That wouldn't be the last time the Northern Ireland international’s name was mentioned, either.

After that dull start to the contest, Millwall suddenly sprung into life and created a flurry of excellent chances.

The first of those was a neat move involving Jed Wallace, Tom Elliott and Aiden O'Brien, but the latter skewed a shot wide of the far post.

Moments later, the Lions had an even better chance. Ryan Leonard floated a

corner to the back post, but neither Pearce nor O'Brien was able to beat George Long in the Tigers goal and the visitors survived a goal-mouth scramble, even after Wallace had a third bite at the cherry.

Elliott was presented with the most clear-cut opportunity of the half but couldn't adjust his feet after Wallace picked him out and the striker fluffed his lines from close range.

Amongst all of those chances, Hull could have thrown a spanner in the works, but despite Jordan Archer being a mere spectator for most of the opening 45 minutes, he was alert to Todd Kane's powerful strike from an angle and parried away from danger.

O'Brien attempted to ambitiously flick home Wallace's driven cross on the stroke of half-time and despite coming closer than his previous two attempts, the Republic of Ireland attacker couldn't score for a second time against Hull this season, after his excellent finish during the 2-2 draw last month.

And like so often with Millwall this season, just seven minutes into the second period, they fell behind completely against the run of play. Former Wolves striker Nouha Dicko was given the freedom of south London before picking out Jon Toral, who cleverly steered past Archer.

Dicko should have extended the Tigers' advantage and put them within touching of the fourth round, but the frontman was off balance and could only head into the stands, rather than the back of the net.

Up the other end, O'Brien had his umpteenth chance of the afternoon but was still unable to beat an inspired Long.

With 27 minutes to go and Millwall's FA Cup journey looking like it might be over at the first hurdle, Harris made a triple substitution, introducing Ferguson, Shaun Williams – who returned after more than a month out with an ankle injury – and Steve Morison. It was the first time this season he had resorted to such drastic

measures.

And Millwall's captain nearly had an instant impact. He put Wallace in the clear with only a defender to beat, but their frustrating afternoon continued as a deflection took the sting out of his effort and Long comfortably claimed.

Wallace set up another chance for O'Brien, but this time the post saved Nigel Adkins' side and their slender lead just about stayed intact.

But the Lions didn't have to wait long to restore parity as Ferguson and Wallace worked a short corner before the former advanced inside and unleashed the most delicious curling effort into the top lefthand corner from the edge of the box.

And less than three minutes later, Ferguson came up with the goods once more to complete the unlikeliest of turnarounds. Leonard won a free-kick just outside the box and Ferguson stepped up and curled another fine strike into the opposite corner.

Elliott should have added gloss to the score-line, but the striker hesitated – opting to take a touch before striking the ball first time with the goal gapping.

Millwall, then, are through the fourth round, where they will face Everton, for the third successive season for the first time since 2004 – the same year they reached the final before losing to Manchester United.

TOM KING said he was disappointed to be recalled from a loan spell at AFC Wimbledon – but he is determined to be ready for a playing opportunity with Millwall.

King, 23, joined the Dons on a seasonlong loan last summer but the Lions activated a recall clause just two weeks after he had regained his first-team place.

King started the campaign as the League One side’s first-choice stopper, before being dropped in September by Neal Ardley.

But after Ardley lost his job in November, his successor Wally Downes recalled the goalkeeper and the side won back-to-back league games for the first time this season.

King headed back to Millwall after AFC Wimbledon’s 2-1 loss at Ben Thompson’s Portsmouth on New Year’s Day and won’t be returning to Kingsmeadow, with the Dons bringing in Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Bournemouth.

“I had an inkling that it was going to happen from what I’d read through the press and what different people had been saying to me off the field,” King said.

“With me being back in the team I didn’t know. You’ve just got to adapt to these things as they happen.

“It was disappointing when I found out I wouldn’t be returning there. I won’t hide that. They’ve signed another goalie and I wish him ever success. I hold those people at the club and the club itself very close to my heart for everything they gave me.

“I wish them every success for the rest of the season.

“Becoming someone who can adapt to different situations I was thrown in was something I was quite keen on. I don’t want to be pigeonholed as a certain type of character. I want to be able to be thrown in the deep end and come out smelling of roses. I want to be a character that people look to as a leader. I don’t want to be known as someone who hides at the first sign of difficulty or shies away when the going gets tough.

“I bumped into David Forde the other day, that’s the kind of character I look up to and want to replicate his role and how important he was in the dressing room at Millwall. He was so influential and so vital to that group. That would be the ideal

“It’s all a learning experience and as long as you can show that you’re improving and getting better with every step that you take that’s all anyone can really ask of you. That’s what I’m hoping to take from my loan period at Wimbledon.

“These things happen in football all the time, it’s never going to go exactly the way you want it. The best players make the best out of every different situation they’re put in so that’s what I’m aiming to be like, to be as versatile as possible and be able to adapt wherever I’m needed.”

In an interview in December, King

seemed to back the removal of Ardley with the side in the relegation zone.

“There had obviously been a lot of frustration built up with me not having been in the team,” King explained.

“It wasn’t meant the same way it was said, it was just a lot of frustrating hours where I felt I was working hard and working well with the other lads and that all came to the boil.

“I do apologise if it has caused any trouble for anyone.

“Wally gave me a lot of confidence, he told me the stuff that I wanted to hear, he knew the situation, where I’d been and what I’d been doing. He’s a really good manager. It was different and it was good

to work under him for a short period.

Hopefully our paths will cross again at some point in the future.

“He was very keen to ask me a lot of questions about what I thought and I was given a bit of a bigger role. He’s a character for sure off the field as well. The boys have more than enough talent and under his management I’m sure they’ll be more than safe come the end of the season.”

King played seventeen times for Millwall in 2016-17 and was first-choice when Jordan Archer was injured but hasn’t featured for them in the league since. He is out of contract next summer, and while another loan move this month

is likely, he’s not ruling out any path.

He said: “I want to leave all my options open, I’m not going to call it a day on [his Millwall career], I’m not that type of character. Obviously it’s been frustrating.

I had a spell in the team two years ago and that seems like an absolute lifetime ago.

“My dream is to be in that Millwall team, whether that’s this season or next season. This is a club that has kind of raised me from a young kid and it’s my dream to step out on that field in a Millwall shirt once again, that’s for sure.

“If it comes to the end of the season and that hasn’t been the case then I’ll have to go and make another situation work for me and prove to people I can do it.”

“I was very pleased, it’s an excellent draw for the club,” Harris said. “It’s one to excite the fans and one that the players will look forward to.

“We know it’s a tough fixture and it will be very difficult to get through. As ever, the cup is not the priority, the league is the priority.

“But I really enjoyed the game at the weekend against Hull, it was an excellent cup tie and we fully deserved to get through and play a side like Everton.

“I’m really pleased and hopefully it will be a sold-out Den.” The ties will be played January 25-28.

Millwall get the Blues as they eye Cup shock

NEIL HARRIS wants a sold-out Den when Millwall welcome Everton in the fourth round of the FA Cup at the end of this month.

The Lions landed Premier League opposition in the competition for the first time since 2017 when they lost a quarterfinal 6-0 to Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Remarkably, it is the eleventh time in twelve Millwall have been drawn at home in the FA Cup in Harris’ time in charge.

They have won eight of their previous ten ties, drawn one and lost one.

The Lions famously defeated three Premier League sides – Bournemouth, Watford and then-champions Leicester City – on their way to the last eight in 2017.

They have made it through to the fourth round for the third successive season – the

SID NELSON has admitted his loan spell with Swindon has given him his confidence back.

Centre-back Nelson – who turned 23 on New Year’s Day – has made 20 League Two appearances this season for the Robins, whose manager Richie Wellens wanted him back to help with a potential play-off push.

Nelson injured his knee against Exeter on his birthday, but had recovered this week as he looks to build on his 105 appearances in all competitions in senior football.

Nelson was signed for Swindon by Phil Brown, who was impressed with the defender’s leadership qualities.

Nelson was soon also impressing Robins fans with his fully committed displays, but then Brown was sacked in November.

Wellens, though, was also an admirer of Nelson, who feels his career is “going in the right direction”.

“It was good to be part of a team where I played 25, 26 games in all competitions being that mainstay centrehalf,” Nelson told the News after his return to Millwall. “There’s something good going on at Swindon as well where we felt there was a play-off push in us. It was good to be a part of that compared to other loans I’ve had.

“I had a few other options last summer, but I spoke to Phil Brown who had come to a couple of games I was involved in last pre-season.

“He told me how he was going to work, how he wanted to play me, how he saw me fitting in. He wanted a centrehalf that could lead from the back. He said he knew what I was about and what he would be getting. He told me to be myself. That attracted me compared to other clubs. I felt it was the right move.

“You don’t want to see anyone leave, especially someone you’ve got a relationship with and you’ve been playing for.

“I just carried on and tried to impress the new manager. I like to think I have, I stayed in the team under him.

“When he came in he assessed things in training, changed some things and then had a few games where he decided who he wanted to play and who he

“You get your confidence back when you’re playing week-in, week-out, you feel good about yourself.

NEIL HARRIS says no decisions have been taken on the futures of Ben Thompson and Fred Onyedinma – and both could still be at the club after this transfer window.

Thompson returned to Millwall this week after helping Portsmouth knock Norwich out of the FA Cup. Pompey boss Kenny Jackett has asked about a permanent deal for the 23-year-old midfielder, but was told he’s not for sale.

Onyedinma is back from Wycombe,

with both players joining in first-team training this week ahead of Saturday’s clash with Blackburn.

“We’ll judge it day by day as the window progresses,” Harris said. “If they remain with us on January 31 I’ll be delighted, from a selfish point of view.

“However, it’s got to be what’s best for the football club and what’s best for the individual as well. We let them go on loan because they needed to play regular minutes.

“If they’re not going to get match minutes here then they need to be on loan, really, as long as we’ve got the adequate amount of players here.

“The players know exactly where they stand at the minute.

“That will help, but as we’ve seen we’re always an injury away from being light in an area.

“As much as I don’t want to stockpile players, I don’t believe in that, we’ve got to make sure that for the final three months of the season we’ve got adequate players. We’ll certainly add at least one more to the group.”

One player potentially affected by Thompson’s return is Jem Karacan, whose contract expires next week.

“Jem’s still with us at the moment.

football,” Harris said.

“He’s out of contract next week so he is free to talk to other clubs and maybe move. I know he has enjoyed his time here, and we’ve certainly enjoyed having him, he’s a great lad and a brilliant pro.

“The opportunity hasn’t really come for him. Talks for Jem to stay are a possibility. The real thought for Jem at the moment has got to be to play firstteam football, whether the opportunity arises here or somewhere else.

“Obviously Jem wants to get his future sorted, but sometimes you need to be patient to find the right club.

“It’s not clear-cut that he won’t be with us but I certainly support Jem in his thought process that he needs to play regular football.”

Nelson, 23, was approaching the end of his contract last season when a successful loan spell at Chesterfield convinced Neil Harris to offer him a oneyear deal.

That expires in the summer and Nelson’s future with the Lions is again uncertain.

Nelson’s last senior competitive appearance for Millwall was in December 2016. Harris let Byron Wesbter go to Scunthorpe in this transfer window but replaced him with Alex Pearce, leaving Nelson well down the pecking order.

“You’ve got to have a positive way of thinking about things, and that [his future] is one of them,” Nelson said. “But for me it’s about learning every day because I’m still at an age, just turned 23, that’s young for a centre-half.

“Whether I’m here or somewhere else we’ll have to wait and see. I’m just enjoying my football again. I feel good about myself and I’m ready to crack on.

“I’m in the same situation I was last year and the second half of the season I kicked right on again and that’s how I earned my contract.

“I’m hoping it’s the same this year. I’ll work hard and see where it takes me.”
