Police were called to an address on John Ruskin Street at 4.20am, but despite the best efforts of the emergency services Ms Huggins tragically could not be saved.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has apologised after a mother was allegedly told she could not breastfeed in one of its offices.

Soraya Zaccaria was visiting a Southwark Council service point on December 11 with her 22month old son when he started crying because he was hungry.

But after asking a member of staff if there was somewhere she could sit down with her baby, she claims he told her it was too busy for her to feed inside and she and her son were left with no option but to go outside in the freezing cold.

Ms Zaccaria says the man then criticised her for leaving when she

was in the queue, and when she asked to make a complaint and speak to a manager, he ‘aggressively’ told her she couldn’t breastfeed in front of all the other people in the building.

Incredibly, despite another woman intervening and explaining that according to the Equality Act 2010, by law a mother can breastfeed anywhere, he still did not relent, she claims.

Ms Zaccaria told the News: “Southwark Council talk about fairness, equal opportunities, but they can’t even teach the Equality Act 2010 to their employees.

“I can’t believe that in 2018 somebody like him can work for a public body like Southwark Council.

“I cannot begin to tell you the sense of helplessness and anger that you feel when somebody is walking all over your rights and has the right to shove their misogynistic views in your face because they are in a position of authority.”

The alleged incident will cause embarrassment for the council as it is trying to encourage more new mums to breastfeed, recently joining breastfeeding welcome scheme, aimed at encouraging businesses to make mothers feel more welcome.

AN EAST Dulwich couple welcomed their baby daughter into the world just minutes after midnight on New Year’s Day – making her one of the first children born in Britain in 2019.

Proud parents Veronica and Benn Andrews welcomed their daughter into the world at 12.03am at St Thomas’ hospital, just yards away from where the iconic London Eye fireworks were taking place.

Their daughter, who weighs 6 lb, was the first of fifteen babies born at St Thomas’ Hospital on New Year’s Day, with ten boys and five girls born between 12.03am and 10.28pm.

She is likely to have been London’s first new arrival of the year. Doting mum Veronica said: “It was a very exciting New Year’s Eve for us and a great start to the year.

“We didn’t know if she would be the last baby of 2018 or the first of 2019 but she arrived when the fireworks were still going off at the London Eye. “We were surprised that she arrived on her due date because you’re always told that the first baby could be late.

“It’s been a whirlwind and if she was the first baby to be born in London in 2019, that’s pretty special.”

The couple have still to pick a name for their little one.

However there was no respite for midwives at the hospital who also delivered 24 babies on New Year’s Eve. Maxine Spencer, director of midwifery, said: “More than 6,600 babies are born at St Thomas’ Hospital each year but Baby Andrews was our very first arrival of 2019, and was probably the first in London.

“Happy New Year to all the new parents and to all of our dedicated maternity staff.”

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

By six months, only a third of babies take any breast milk, and just one per cent are exclusively breast fed. And, according to UNICEF, eight out of ten women stop before they want to.

Common reasons for stopping include infections, pain and discomfort, lack of milk or issues latching on. Returning to work and feeling uncomfortable feeding in public also pose challenges.

Although breastfeeding does not work for everyone, the council says it wants to make it as easy as possible for those who can and want to breastfeed.

The council also runs breastfeeding cafes for mothers to get together and get support.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for community safety and public health described the alleged incident as ‘utterly unacceptable’.

She told the News: “As a mother of a young child myself, I totally understand the upset that this may have caused Ms. Zaccaria, and for that I am sincerely sorry.

“This... does not represent council policy and we have spoken to all staff to remind them that the mothers are, of course, welcome to breastfeed in all council buildings.”

SOUTHWARK RESIDENTS SCOOP GONGS IN HONOURS’ LIST

A SOCIAL entrepreneur and tax-abuse investigator are among the Southwark residents who scooped gongs in the New Year’s Honours list.

Colin Crooks, CEO of the social enterprise Tree Shepherd, was given a coveted MBE for helping more than 2,500 people across London over 29 years.

The 57-year-old entrepreneur has been involved in helping traders

facing relocation from the Elephant and Castle shopping centre and has helped others start their own business.

He said the honour came as a “total shock”, but was happy that it drew attention to the work of social enterprises and his team at Tree Shepherd.

The outfit has helped 700 people start small businesses and advises traders who have to relocate because of development works.

Patrick Mears, aged 60, was also honoured with an Order of the

British Empire (OBE) for helping to combat abusive tax avoidance.

The accolade is given to those whose work has made them nationally recognised in a certain field.

The Herne Hill resident is chairman of the General Anti-Abuse Rule Advisory Panel, which rules on investigations into tax abuse.

He said he was “proud” to have received the honour for his work.

“Since its inception in 2013 I have chaired the General Anti-Abuse Rule (GAAR) Advisory Panel.

“The GAAR legislation was introduced to help change abusive tax avoidance behaviour by promoters, individuals and companies and to give HMRC the power to counteract hoped for tax advantages flowing from abusive planning.”

Previously he had been a lawyer with legal firm Allen and Overy, specialising in corporate tax.

A Southwark Council housing manager was also honoured in the list after receiving an MBE, bestowed by the Queen for

conditions.

Fire alarms and extinguishers in the properties did not work, and rooms were illegally over-occupied.

One couple were paying £730 a month for a studio flat previously identified as being unsafe, with rooms which all fell below minimum size guidelines and a bedroom which contained no windows or ventilation.

At sentencing at the Inner London Crown Court on December 17, His Honour Judge Wood QC gave the

three men fines of £37,500 and costs of £16,467.30 for their string of housing offences.

A confiscation order of £55,372.96, linked to the proceeds of the negligent landlords’ crimes, was also made, totalling over £109,000.

Councillor Victoria Mills, Cabinet Member for Finance, Performance and Brexit, said the ruling showed the council would not tolerate rogue landlords.

“This case shows that we will use all tools available to maintain living

standards for private renters,” she said.

“Families and individuals should never live in unsafe, sub-standard and poorly managed flats and crime should never pay.”

Baian Abdul 37, Kazi Abdul, 43, and Kashim Abdul, 45, of Darville Road, Stoke Newington, all pleaded guilty at hearings in 2017.

However, sentencing was delayed while the council investigated the proceeds of their crimes.

Kazi Abdul was also a director of a

“outstanding achievement or service to the community.”

Ian Swift was named in the New Year’s Honours list as receiving the award for his services to homeless people.

He was congratulated by Southwark councillors for his achievement with cabinet member Stephanie Cryan writing “massive congratulations.”

Eleanor Kerslake, councillor for Newington ward (Lab) added: “Really well deserved, a good man doing one of the toughest jobs.”

ROGUE LANDLORDS HIT WITH £109,000 FINE

THREE ROGUE landlords who were renting out flats above the former Thomas a Beckett pub on the Old Kent Road were hit with a £109,000 fine last month following a council investigation.

Council officials uncovered a shocking list of offences during an inspection in August 2016, finding tenants were living in unsafe

company, KKB Financial Services Ltd, which was connected with the letting of the flats from 320-322 Old Kent Road.

The council’s Trading Standards officials also found that the company had been falsely claiming to be members of a national lettings scheme when it was not.

Council officials said it was the latest in a string of interventions at the property, with two previous convictions being secured for breaches of housing law.

Her father, Phil Huggins, wrote: “MY BEAUTIFUL daughter x princess always darling love you so much darling always and forever xx xx Daddyo xxx don't you ever forget that ok Daddyo xxx.”

One friend paying tribute said: “Words cannot describe the shock and complete heart break we all feel on the Brandon.

“Honestly you were a beautiful human being I’m so, so sorry this world is so cruel.”

Another added: “Always with a ready smile, a gentle, beautiful person inside and out, the world is a darker place without you.

You deserved better. Rest in peace sweet Charlotte.”

A BERMONDSEY headmistress, who was known to some as the ‘flying nun’, after serving in the RAF as a young woman, sadly passed away last Saturday evening at a convent in Oxford.

Sister Ann Hoskison was a formidable figure for thousands of pupils at the St Michael’s secondary school on John Felton Road for a quarter of a century.

Aged 82 Sister Ann is said to have ‘gone peacefully’ in her sleep at the Elmthorpe Convent in Oxfordshire on Saturday 29 December, after suffering with heart problems for a number of years.

But the flying nun was a keen and expert sportswoman in her heyday, rowing for Cambridge University while studying there in the 1950s. She qualified as a teacher at the famous university in 1957, but not before showing her sporting prowess on the tennis court, even playing at Wimbledon.

From a family embedded in the armed forces - her father captained the HMS Belfast - it was no surprise when she signed up for the Women’s Royal Air Voluntary Reserves in 1958 aged 22 and became a qualified pilot.

However, her passion was always education, teaching at a Naval School in

Malta, and then converting to the Catholic faith and devoting her life to Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco in 1961 and becoming a sister in 1965.

Speaking to the News, Sister Norma Kirkby, who was the former head of St Joseph’s Primary School in Gomm Road, Rotherhithe, until she retired in 2004, said: “Sister Ann was constantly motivated by the spirit of Don Bosco in her work for young people.”

Her earlier sporting accomplishments were ever present when she became the headteacher of St Michael in 1976, having handed over her family home in Alverstoke, Portsmouth, as a residential centre for the young people. Thousands of Bermondsey youngsters spent weekends away there on the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme and Adventure Service Challenge Scheme Activities. Sister Ann also organised geographical field trips with

sailing and canoeing, as well spiritual retreats.

A maths and science teacher, she taught at Mary Help of Christians Girls High School in Liverpool and Hugh Farringdon in Reading, before coming to Bermondsey as a head, retiring 25 years later in 2001.

In 2002 she was awarded the honorary Freedom of the Borough of Southwark in recognition for the work she did for the pupils of St Michael’s and is also remembered for going out in the 1990s recruiting teachers from Australia during a shortage in the borough at that time.

Before moving to the convent in Cowley, Oxford, in 2014, Sister Ann carried on working - becoming the chaplain at Bishop Thomas Grant School in Streatham and continuing her work in Alverstoke.

Her funeral is being held on Tuesday 22 January at Our Lady Help of Christians

Church, 59 Hollow Way, Cowley, Oxford, OX4 2ND at 11am, with internment at 12.45pm at Botley Cemetery. Everyone is welcome to see Sister Ann off, but are asked to call the convent on 01865 788 160 and ask for Sister Norma or leave a message, so they can get an idea of numbers attending.

Many tributes have been left on Facebook, with former pupils calling for a service to be also held in her honour in Bermondsey.

Others posted pictures of flowers left in Charlotte’s memory outside the Camberwell house.

Hours before her death, the 33year-old mother had posted an inspirational message on her Facebook account as she wished friends and family a “happy, healthy” Happy New Year.

“If you went through a hard time please accept that the diversity was only there for you to spring into a new life,” it read. “The pain from that moment may never leave but the joy and bliss of a new one can always come in.”

A 34-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder on January 1 and taken into custody at a south London station.

However he was bailed to return at a later date in January, officers said on Wednesday. They added that they believed whoever carried out the attack may have been known to Charlotte.

Man found with head injuries

A SECTION of Bermondsey’s Southwark Park Road was taped off by police last week after a man was found with head injuries.

Police were called by London Ambulance Service to Southwark Park Road at 8:12pm Saturday, 29 December to reports of an injured male in his 50s.

A police spokesperson told the News he was taken to hospital with ‘non lifethreatening or life-changing injuries’.

A second man aged 49 was arrested at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.. He was taken to a south London police station.

Officers from Southwark are investigating, and enquiries continue.

PORTRAITS BY Picasso, Cezanne, Hockney and Freud are now on display at a free exhibition at Elephant and Castle until February.

The exhibition, entitled Close: Drawn Portraits, spans 200 years of portraiture and features work from household names alongside contemporary images from new talent – and portraits of residents from Elephant and Castle.

Among the contemporary artists showcased are Clifton Wright, who is supported by Intoart, a charity that works with artists with learning disabilities, and Jessica Voorsanger, who has captured a group of women who knit for peace at the Peabody community hall nearby.

The free exhibition is held at Drawing Room, the only public and non-profit gallery in the UK and Europe dedicated to contemporary drawing.

PAUL WELLER fans can now get their hands on a limited edition print of the painting created for his Movin’ On music video.

Movin’ On was the first track released from 60-year-old Weller’s fourteenth solo album, True Meanings.

The video follows artist Ed Gray as he walks through Walworth Road and Elephant and Castle, cut with scenes of him creating the painting in his studio, as Weller sings: “I’ve got love

all around / I don’t need nothing else / I watch the evening sky / Oh and it’s painting itself.”

Back in September, the Rotherhithebased artist told the News the painting, entitled Movin’ On (Love All Around) Walworth Road, was, incredibly, completed in just a day – and shot within 24 hours too.

Gray has now released a set of 195 prints on watercolour paper, with 50 per cent of the sale price being directly donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The Newington Causeway-based theatre announced it had been awarded a three-quarter-of-a-million grant from the London Mayor’s ‘Good Growth Fund’ to secure its future in Southwark.

Since the theatre was set up 25 years ago it has been based in temporary locations on Southwark Bridge Road, the arches of London Bridge station and its current Newington Causeway HQ. This year, as well as fundraising for a new HQ in Elephant and Castle, on Newington Butts, the playhouse also plans to open a ‘satellite’ venue in the arches of the redeveloped London Bridge station at 10 Bermondsey Street.

The theatre has now raised 90 per cent of the £2.8 million needed to fit-out its Elephant and Castle home and will start

building work in the new year, with an opening date planned for the second-half of 2019.

Its new base will include a 300-seat performance space, dedicated youth, community and development space, bar and café, and offices.

Chris Smyrnios, artistic director and chief executive of Southwark Playhouse, said: “We’re very grateful that the Mayor of London has made such an invaluable investment in us.

“We’re a small team with no fundraising support, so for our application - which centres around our work in the community - to be given full funding is an incredible achievement for the whole team and one which will help us to start building works onsite from early next year.”

Seventy million is up for grabs from Sadiq Khan’s ‘Good Growth Fund’ and, in total, City Hall has granted £30 million to projects focused on helping communities undergoing regeneration in their area.

A STAR has been named after a Dulwich primary school pupil in recognition of her top science prize win.

Ten-year-old Lottie from Alleyn’s Junior School in Dulwich won the top prize in the junior category of Empiribox’s ‘Win a Star’ competition, which invited children to invent an alien.

Lottie won first prize with her rainbowcoloured creature specially adapted for life in outer-space, including extra big swirly eyes for seeing through intergalactic fog and extra body weight to beat low gravity.

She was delighted by her win, saying: “I’d like to do something in science when I leave school. I was really excited to win as I’ve never won anything before!”

The year five student won both a star in her own name, and one for her school, and was given a sky map so she can find both at night. Classmates will also enjoy a planetarium show at the school February, as part of the competition prize.

Competition runner Empiribox works with schools and teachers across the UK to help them make science fun and achieve outstanding results.

Its founder, Dan Sullivan, said: “Children are fascinated by stars and the idea of life on other planets. Our ‘Win a Star Competition’ really fired their imagination and we were amazed by the creativity of the designs. Lottie’s entry really stood out because she showed a lovely understanding of space science.”

MORRISONS ON Walworth Road is giving out free fruit for kids to help prevent food waste and make sure children get their five-a-day.

Each morning a wooden stand in front of the fresh fruit and veg section

will be restocked with a range of ripe fruit – including apples, pears, oranges and bananas – that are within their ‘sell by’ limit but would otherwise soon be binned if not sold.

Free tai chi and self-defence classes for disabled people

FREE TAI chi and self-defence classes are being held in Camberwell for people with disabilities.

The classes will be held weekly on Mondays at Everyone Active’s Camberwell Leisure Centre, and are being put on in partnership with national disability charity, and Southwark Disablement Association.

The sessions are open to adults over eighteen and with a sensory impairment or complex disability and are run by qualified instructors with experience of working with disabled people.

Carers, friends and family are also welcome to attend and classes will

include both sitting and standing contact work.

Mayana McDermott, London’s regional sports coordinator at Sense, said: “We’re really excited to partner up with Southwark Disablement Association to offer free tai chi with self-defence classes.

“We are grateful to Everyone Active for providing space.

“We believe that everyone deserves the right to enjoy a physically active life, no matter how complex their disabilities are.”

JANUARY: Heroic passers-by staged a daring rescue of three children from under a fallen tree in Borough. The youngsters – a girl and two boys - were walking past a tree in the car park of Dunkirk House, off Long Lane, on New Year’s Eve when it fell on them. It’s thought the tree fell because it was rotten, rather than wind. The London Fire Brigade praised the quick-thinking pedestrians for their heroic deeds.

FEBRUARY: The parents of little Isla Caton, 4, battling neuroblastoma, thanked Millwall fans for setting aside their fierce rivalry with West Ham to raise money for pioneering treatment. Kind-hearted Lions fans undertook a range of charity ventures to raise £30,000, to help the tot receive surgery abroad. Isla, currently in Barcelona, is said to be responding well to treatment. Her parents are still fundraising.

APRIL: An East Dulwich widow told the News of her devastation after her husband’s ashes were burgled just three weeks after his cremation. The victim first met her husband at dancing classes in 1954. His ashes had been due to be scattered on a rose tree in the back garden and on his parent’s grave in Honor Oak cemetery. The pensioner, in her eighties, who did not wish to be named, wasn’t at home when they broke in.

THIRTEEN PEOPLE were murdered in Southwark last year.

Even worse, they are just a fraction of those who have survived but been left maimed with serious, lifechanging injuries and psychological trauma after a wave of violence.

Some victims, especially those in their teens, will be remembered for their connection with ‘gang ‘wars’ which seem to be less over postcode turf and more about social media and drill rap videos.

In June, Southwark Police’s gang lead, DI Luke Williams, countered claims drugs were driving escalating gang violence: “In my experience it’s more that it’s an honour thing – that they’ve been disrespected,” he said.

“It’s social media. We have one gang who will go on YouTube, film a video and make derogatory comments or curse about the other gang and taunt them to do things. We see [the videos] go back and forth between the gangs.”

One victim, Siddique Kamara, who died by the Brandon Estate in August, had even appeared in an interview defending the aggressive genre.

The Moscow17 member, known as SK and Incognito, admitted in a YouTube video: “You've got to put your hands up and say drill music does influence it.

"But knife crime and gun crime has been going on way before drill music, so

if you want to talk about 10 years, 20 years, people were still getting cheffed up.”

Siddique died on the same street as his friend and fellow rapper Rhyhiem Ainsworth Barton, who was shot dead in May. That street is not far from Harlem Spartans rapper Latwaan Griffiths, who was left dumped by a moped rider on Denmark Road in July.

The police’s role in stemming the tide has come under particular scrutiny, especially given the merger between Southwark and Lambeth’s forces.

At the beginning of the year, moped enabled crime was the hot topic and after a huge increase last year, police had stepped up their efforts with a special new unit that saw a 30 per cent reduction in violent crime in the first three months of the year.

But then the series of high-profile fatal stabbings and daylight shootings sparked what has seemed to be a bloodbath, and left officers scrambling.

Neighbourhood officer numbers have also been depleted by government cuts and the expectation they will deal with emergencies and high profile security events elsewhere in London - from Donald Trump’s visit to extra policing pressures from the lively World Cup. Figures gained by the News from a freedom of information request show that in the last four years Southwark’s safer neighbourhood team strength has been

cut from a peak of 218 in 2014, to 121 at the end of September this year. At the end of December 2017, there were 141 officers in ‘neighbourhood policing roles’.

But despite an increased use of stop and search, controversial ‘gang matrix’ database, officers themselves have made it clear they cannot arrest their way out of this, and law enforcement will only ever

be a sticking plaster on a bigger problem.

This was the year marches for peace were held in Camberwell and Peckham, and public vigils in Blue Market Square, but others were unafraid to say these outward shows of grief would not solve the problem - and claimed they knew that

something could.

Senior people in the police, council and support workers have started to focus on the impact trauma has on young minds, and how witnessing or experiencing violence can lead children and teenagers into a violent cycle of their own.

In October, youth worker Alika AgidiJeffs told the News: “Let’s call the ‘gang members’ what they are. If someone is willing to kill and then go and get chicken and chips, that person is a psychopath”, backing a campaign to take a ‘public health’ approach to combating violence,

which essentially views it as catching.

But youth violence is only one part of the picture. Among those killed in 2018 are women, pensioners and a man in his sixties. How many of these deaths could have been prevented?

THIS YEAR grieving families were left distressed by a series of shocking cemetery blunders, and a campaign to stop trees being felled to make more way for burial space rumbled on for a fourth year.

In February, a bereft son contacted the News after discovering his late mother’s ashes would be moved from their final resting place during renovations at Honor Oak Crematorium, despite purchasing a 25-year-lease which failed to mention the council could remove the remains to another location.

Mr Ung told the News: “It is very upsetting for my family – we chose a 25year lease with the option to renew so that my mother could rest in peace,” claiming at no point had anyone apologised.

At the time, the council said the work was necessary and had been planned in consultation with families.

Apprentice engineer Joshua Boadu, from Bermondsey, was stabbed in broad daylight following an altercation with a group of males in Linsey Street at about 6.21pm and sought refuge at an address in nearby Lucey Way. He was put on life support at King’s College Hospital where his family kept a vigil at his bedside for eleven days but he passed away after his heart stopped beating in the early hours of June 22.

22-year-old Boxer, Oluwafemi Omosuyi, was shot in the face on Wodehouse Avenue in Peckham, shortly before 8pm. His companion also sustained gunshot injuries. Both survived but ‘Femi’ as he is known was left seriously injured.

“It’s their one job and they’ve had 100 years to do it. This burial project has to stop now and let the land return to the wild, with the war graves honoured by nature”.

Man stabbed during a fight in MacDonald’s on Old Kent Road at 5.15am and hospitalised with ‘non lifethreatening’ injuries.

30-year-old Dwayne Kevin Buchanan, from Birmingham stabbed on Kennington Road and left needing round-the-clock care from a serious brain injury.

JULY: Shocked residents on Peckham’s Cossall Estate filmed a fly-tipping council truck, seen dumping garden furniture and bags of rubbish across the floor.

One resident who filmed the 1.50am dumping told the News he was “shocked” as the rubbish contained nails and screws left strewn on the ground.

Embarrassed council officials said the truck was not on council business at the time but said it would investigate it as a “matter of importance.” The investigation result is not known.

DECEMBER: Archaeologists working on a Thames super-sewer site in Bermondsey made an unusual discovery – a 500-yearold skeleton wearing thigh-high leather boots.

SEPTEMBER: Utter swines stole eleven two-week-old piglets from Surrey Docks Farm, Rotherhithe in a mysterious overnight raid, with no signs of forced entry.

Distraught staff at the farm appealed for the rare Oxford Sandy Black piglets to be reunited with their parents Winnie and Marmalade, as they needed round-the-clock feeding. “Unless, whoever stole them knows how to take care of them, without their mothers feeding them they will die,” weekend manager Rachel Smith, 46, told the News. However, the piglets were never found.

Experts poring over the mystery man believe that the boots, suitable for wading, mean he made his living from the river. Inspections also revealed deep grooves in his teeth, suggesting he may have held rope in his mouth as a fisherman might. However researchers warned the mystery of the man’s identity may never be solved.

CONSERVATIVE councillors were wiped off the electoral map in Southwark in May’s local elections for the first time in the council’s history.

Labour retained control of the council as it has done since 2010.

In a jubilant victory speech at the council’s Tooley Street headquarters, council leader Peter John (pictured) said: “For the first time in history, Southwark is a Tory-free zone and the people of Southwark have rejected Theresa May’s government and all that she stands for.”

However, predictions of a Labour whitewash did not materialise as the party only gained one seat from its 2014 performance.

The opposition Liberal Democrats said they had “defied all expectations” with their showing and “strengthened” their position.

“Labour’s central aim in this campaign was to make Southwark a Lib Dem-free zone. In that, they have clearly failed,” Liberal Democrat group leader Anood Al-Samerai told the News on the night.

The London Bridge and West Bermondsey ward election was cancelled on May 3 following the death of Conservative councillor Toby Eckersley. The by-election was instead held on June 14, with all three seats being won by Liberal Democrat candidates. The result brought the total balance of seats on the council to 49 for Labour and 14 for the Lib Dems.

The Kirby became the ‘World Cup Estate’

NOBODY SHOWED their patriotic pride more than the residents of Bermondsey’s Kirby Estate, who decked out the estate in England flags to cheer on our footie team during the World Cup.

The estate hit headlines around the world after the News reported its proud residents put up more than 300 flags to cheer on Gareth Southgate and his team – earning it the moniker of ‘The World Cup Estate.’

The flags came down after the World Cup final between France and Croatia but will go back up on St George’s Day on April 23. The viral success of the flags meant the world’s media camped out in the estate to witness England fans’ reactions as the team were beaten in the semi-final 2-1 by Croatia.

England’s footie players even paid the residents of the estate a video call from Russia to thank them for their extraordinary support.

Chris Dowse, one of the organisers of the spectacle, said it soon turned back to normal following the end of the

World Cup. “We were really proud because no one expected England to get that far,” said Chris, who lives with his wife and two children just off Southwark Park Road.

“It’s been an amazing whirlwind really; none of us expected what

happened to happen but we just embraced it and enjoyed every single moment of it from putting the flags up to doing all the social media and having the press attention and speaking to the England team.

“No one is going to top that from a small council estate.”

Just eight months ago the club was in exile, leaving its Champion Hill home and training ground over allegations of debts and allegedly told it could not even use its own name in a trademarking row with landlord Meadow Residential.

The 125-year-old club, which has won fans worldwide for its community work and championing of progressive cause, was left in exile at Tooting and Mitcham FC’s Imperial Fields.

Southwark Council said it would look into all options – including compulsory purchase – with Dulwich and West Noorwood MP Helen Hayes taking the debate all the way to parliament.

Poignantly, the team entered the Vanarama National League South while still in limbo.

The deadlock was broken with help from ex-Sports Minister Tracey Crouch, who played a key role in the negotiations.

DHFC’s homecoming was announced on Tuesday, October 23, with the first Champion Hill fixture

held on Boxing Day. Whatever the results in their upcoming games, Hamlet’s players have already made a triumphant return, and also done so bringing Meadow on board.

The company is now throwing its weight behind the club, including a financial donation to the tune of £50,000.

The club’s priority since then has been getting its grounds up and running and in the condition they need.

Longer-term, the club and council have also agreed a new lease on the AstroTurf pitch at Greendale, which will become a new community sports facility.

And Meadow says a new application for a 4,000 capacity stadium will be submitted in the New Year, with more than 230 new homes – but none on metropolitan open land.

Come January, the club will be back to doing what it does where it does it best – being a football club at the heart of its community.

And a renewed focus on knife crime, in its charity work, will be helping youngsters choose football over violence.

In his 20 years as chair of Southwark Heritage Association he left a legacy of recognising the people, places and events that have made Southwark special throughout history.

His wife, Veronica, said: “Dave was, I’m proud to say, my amazing husband and partner for over 40 years, and an amazing father and grandfather.

“He is sorely missed by all the family.

We are and always have been a very close family and he is with us always in our hearts, thoughts and everything we do.”

TRIBUTES POURED in after the death of Dame Tessa Jowell on May 12, a year after she was diagnosed with brain cancer.

FORMER COUNCILLOR George Dunk, ‘the kindest and most generous of men’, died on April 27 in hospital after a short illness.

The Liberal Democrat was elected councillor for Riverside ward in 1900 and re-elected in 1994. He stood down in 1998 and later became an Alderman.

Sir Simon Hughes, Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP from 1983 to 2015, said: “George Dunk was a passionate, dedicated, compassionate and hugely committed Liberal and Liberal Democrat, well-known and loved throughout the party.

“At a personal level George was the kindest and most generous of men, and most loyal of friends.

“It was typical of George that in his last text message to me from his St Thomas’ hospital bed he ended with the p.s. ‘have voted’, meaning he had sent in his postal votes for the council elections.”

A ‘TRUE Southwark boy’ and founder of Southwark’s Blue Plaque Scheme, Dave Alden, died on June 17 at the age of 66, from cancer.

FISHER’S ‘BIGGEST fan’ Les Rowe was given a true Bermondsey send-off in June with a coffin draped in the club’s black and white colours.

The 83-year-old died after a short battle with bowel cancer. He was known for being one of the best boxing matchmakers in the ‘50s and ‘60s, before turning his hand to managing Fisher Athletic Football Club in Rotherhithe. His devotion to the club was so strong, that in hospital just days before he died he said: ‘As soon as I get out of here will someone take me down to Fisher?’ Born and bred in Bermondsey, the 83-year-old will be sorely missed by his legion of fans.

THE LONDON Bridge and West Bermondsey ward election was suspended in May’s local elections after the shock death of ‘charming gentleman’ Toby Eckersley.

The 76 year old Conservative candidate had served as councillor Dulwich’s Village Ward from 1977- 1986, and reelected for a further tenure at the council from 1990-2014.

TONY FARSKY, known in the borough as a tireless campaigner for pensioners’ rights, passed away aged 98 in October.

Mr Farsky, a former Dulwich headteacher, was also known for being an anti-nuclear activist and a talented jazz pianist. The “inspirational” campaigner had been admitted to King’s College Hospital with a chest infection before passing away in his sleep.

BERTRAM ‘BERNIE’ Alfred Coot, was a Waterloo born WW2 navy verteran who saw major action at Dunkirk and Normandy.

Bernie lied about his age to join the Navy aged seventeen, becoming part of the Secret Boat Service. “Cheeky and mischievous” Bernie is credited with saving dozens of lives during the war. He passed away on May 31 aged 97, just six weeks after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

018 IS over and much of the news that dominated the headlines in the paper in the previous twelve months will be rolling on at full speed into 2019 – even perhaps the spate of stabbings in Southwark and across the country as a whole.

Southwark witnessed its share of killings and mayhem on the streets of the capital, as figures revealed crimes involving knives surged by sixteen per cent in London and even excluding those who were the victims of terrorism, there was still a twelve per cent rise in murders – the highest in a decade.

Amid the crime epidemic it is hard to focus on the other stories that affect residents in the borough including tackling the housing crisis, the shortage of resources to the adult social care budget, childhood obesity and wider issues of pollution.

In 2018 all four of these issues were reported as Labour was re-elected in the hope of tackling them. On the housing crisis the current administration has continued its pledge to build 11,000 new homes by 2043. On top of trying to build new council homes, Southwark Council in November petitioned the government for powers to curb Right to Buy, to help stem the loss of council houses in the borough. It was revealed that more than 1,300 homes in Southwark have moved into private hands since the discount on right to buy was increased in 2012 by the coalition government. The Lib Dems in opposition have made clear that the council should do more to tackle the 6,500 empty homes in the borough – London’s highest.

On the adult social care front carers in 2018 were dubbed the ‘Cinderella profession’ because the long hours and low pay they receive is of major concern. This was against a backdrop of more than one in three people in England diagnosed with dementia not getting the follow-up care they are entitled to, particularly in getting an individual care plan that is reviewed at least once a year.

While much praise should be given to the efforts to tackle childhood obesity in the borough, including introducing free gym and swimming classes, this was counter-balanced by news that the number of Southwark takeaways has increased.

As 2018 drew to a close the major road and bridges were blocked by eco-protesters in the hope of bringing the issue of climate change to the forefront of people’s minds, much to the annoyance of many motorists and commuters. Meanwhile pollution levels at schools and nurseries situated beside major roads saw some fundraising for masks for children.

And all of this is against a backdrop of uncertainty as we look to leave the EU – one thing is for sure we will not be short of news in 2019.

HISTORIC ROTHERHITHE buildings are on their way to being illuminated ahead of the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower sailing after a fundraiser smashed its target.

Six historic buildings in the area could receive up-lighting after the crowdfunding drive netted £31,500 for a feasibility study into the project. The initiative reached its £30,000 target on Saturday with 177 backers.

Further funds would need to be raised to install the lighting, however, which is proposed for the Mayflower Pub, Brunel Museum and Sands Films Studio among others.

The fundraising project was launched in October by friends Clare Armstrong, of Rotherhithe, and Sheila Taylor, of Bermondsey.

Clare told donors: “We want to move the process forward as quickly as we can now, and we are still hoping that there might be time for this legacy lighting scheme to be installed by July 2020 when the Mayflower 400 celebrations and commemorations begin.

“We have already arranged to meet with the conservation architect and the lighting designer in January to discuss next steps.

“Thank you again for your support and for your enthusiasm and for making it possible for us to take our exciting vision forward to the next stage.”

The cost of the installation of the lights would be around £100,000, it is estimated – but now the money feasibility study has been raised, other sources of funding could soon follow.

The illuminations could also include hitech QR codes, which would allow

visitors to the area to scan the illustrations with their phones, to learn about the historical significance of the buildings.

The lights would be used for around 40 years, according to the project, making the significant Rotherhithe landmarks visible from the river.

The fundraiser is still open for donations and can be found by searching Spacehive Illuminate Rotherhithe.

150 years of saving children

Evelina Children’s Hospital was set up in 1869 in one of the most deprived areas of London

THE EVELINA Hospital this year celebrates a big anniversary - it has been curing children’s illnesses and saving their lives for 150 years. The News has delved into its archives to look at the history of this vital institution.

The Evelina was founded in 1869

by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, of the famous Rothschild banking family.

Baron Rothschild was originally from Vienna but went to Cambridge University together with Edward, then Prince of Wales, and settled in London.

In 1865, he married his cousin, Evelina de Rothschild.

The couple were soon expecting their first child, but in 1866 the Baroness went into premature labour after she was involved in a railway accident.

Dr Arthur Farre, her Physician Obstetrician, was rushed to help her, but nothing could be done. The child was stillborn, and Evelina died soon after.

Baron Ferdinand founded the Evelina Hospital for Sick Children in their memory.

Recording the opening of the hospital in June 1869, the Lancet described how “no expense has been spared to make this a model hospital”.

“The hospital consists of four storeys: two of these are devoted to the reception of patients, the groundfloor being for the accommodation of the house-surgeon, matron, and certain ladies who have undertaken the management of the nursing,” it said.

“On the attic storey are sleeping rooms for the nurses and servants, and a quarantine ward for doubtful cases.

“There are separate kitchens for Jews and Christians.

“Along the length of the building runs a single very handsome ward, 100 foot by 24 foot, and fourteen foot high.

“In the ward are four fireplaces, so that it can at any time be divided into four smaller rooms, if this be deemed advisable.

“At the other extremity is a playroom, and beyond this two large and cheerful rooms, one of which will be for cases of whooping-cough and its complications - a novel feature in children's hospitals, - and the other probably for infants under a year old.”

provide Southwark with the most upto-date child care facilities – indeed they were among the best in the country.

Guy's was the first hospital in London to adopt Lister's antiseptic methods, introduced by Dr H. G. Howse when he was appointed Assistant Surgeon in 1870, and the groundbreaking practice was introduced at the Evelina when he joined its staff in the following year.

And the facilities was sorely needed: it was located in the heart of one of the most deprived areas in London.

In the early years of the Evelina, the battle was on to combat the fatal diseases that reflected the appalling living conditions of the area.

As a bronze plaque placed at the corner between Southwark Bridge Road and Quilp Street to commemorate the orginal site of the Evelina states: “The chosen site, Southsea Court in Southwark, was one of the poorest districts of London, where children were stricken with disease, serious infections and undernourishment leading to many deaths.

“This new model hospital uplifted the spirits of the people bringing to a deprived district the hope of fighting the ravages of childhood disease.”

Whooping cough, brain, nerve and lung disorders (particularly convulsions, pneumonia and bronchitis) and tuberculosis, were all rife in the dirty, crowded living quarters near the hospital.

Young children were most vulnerable. In the year 1876-77, the total number of deaths in the parish was 1,206, of which more than half were of children under the age of five.

Despite the availability of only 30 beds during the initial period, more than 300 children were admitted in the first year.

By 1890, the number of beds and the rate of admission had both doubled. In that year, of 675 admissions, 158 died.

By the end of the century, however, the number of annual admissions had reached more than 1000 and the death rate was falling.

The Evelina continued to treat sick children from Southwark, Lambeth and the surrounding area for the next 107 years. In 1976, it moved to Guy’s Tower, to unite with Guy’s

Hospital children’s department.

The old Evelina building was demolished and the area was converted into Mint Street car park.

In 2005, the hospital moved into its current premises, a stunning new purpose-built hospital at St Thomas’, to start the next chapter of its life.

Grotto Place was an area of great depravation near to the hospital.

Records show that at least 28 children were admitted to the Evelina from Grotto Place and Lower Grotto Place.

James was discharged completely cured after two days.

In 1891 the Smith family lived at 14 Grotto Place. Sydney Smith, the father, worked as a lighterman on a barge, carrying goods up and down the river.

Both Sydney and his wife, Mary, had been born in Southwark. They had five children.

In 1890, four-year-old Henry was admitted to the Evelina with whooping cough and bronchitis. After 24 days in hospital he was discharged cured.

His brother Alfred came in a year later aged eight with an abscess on his thigh.

Poor Alfred had to have an operation under chloroform to lance and drain the abscess, but he recovered well and was also discharged cured after a 21 day stay.

However, for one family, the hospital couldn't overcome the odds which were stacked against them and they lost two of their six children while in its care.

The Richardsons lived at 16 Grotto Place. Mary, their only daughter, was taken in to the hospital in 1895 aged one suffering from stridulous laryngitis, a very serious disease in which the airways become obstructed.

In the 1890s this area was described in Charles Booth's survey of London: “Lower Grotto Place: the worst of all the lot in appearance. 5/6d for a two rooms, no wash house but a yard behind!

“This bit is known as “the Grottos”: many children all well fed but dirty and with sores on faces: clothes ragged, too large and too small, windows broken and patched: there may be a few thieves and prostitutes but Barton [the police constable who took Booth's researcher round] does not know them as such: they make their appearances in the police court for drunks and assault.”

The children admitted to the Evelina from these streets ranged in age from under one to twelve-years-old. The most common complaints were connected to accidents, included cuts and bruises.

James Sargeant, of 19 Grotto Place, was admitted after drinking Elliman's Horse Oil in 1897. Elliman's is used to relieve tired and overworked muscles in both animal and human patients. Luckily,

tracheotomy, in which a hole is made in the throat so a tube can be introduced into the windpipe - circumventing the obstruction and easing her breathing.

It was a dangerous procedure. At the Evelina, 73 per cent of cases involving a tracheotomy resulted in death.

Mary also received hypodermic injections of strychnine, and doses of brandy - often an indication that a child was close dying. She died three days after admission.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that because of a crane operation by Galliard Construction, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

Whilst the works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in Swan Street, between Harper Road and Trinity Street.

The alternative route for affected traffic will be: Trinity Street, Borough High Street, Harper Road, as applicable.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

by Thames Water, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads. (a) Whilst the works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter Browning Street from it’s junction with Walworth Road.

The alternative route for (a) will be as indicated by the signs displayed.

PEDRO MARTINEZ Losa, Millwall Lionesses’ director of football, wants to reassure fans that the side’s current results are partly down to the “evolution that is happening inside the club” this season and he expects the team to improve in the future.

As part of the club’s revolution following financial difficulties last season and manager Lee Burch departing for Premier League side Yeovil ladies, Losa was appointed as director of football alongside to work with new first team manager, Chris Phillips, both of whom were together at Arsenal Ladies in 2014.

Losa is renowned for his success of developing women’s football clubs. He started his career managing Rayo Vallecano Femenino where he won three consecutive league titles between 2008 and 2011. He was then recruited by Western New York Flash in the United States as assistant manager where he oversaw the establishment of their academy and helped the first team to become joint-winners of the National Women’s Soccer League.

He joined the Lionesses last summer.

“The opportunity to bring the club up from scratch and put the club in a stable situation,” he said when asked by the News what attracted him to the role. “And step by step we are building the foundations for the future and helping build one more chapter in the women’s game in the UK. “I have done it before on a few occasions, at Rayo Vallecano we started at the same point. At Arsenal we did not start from the same point but we had to move through to professionalism also.”

The Lionesses are currently winless at the bottom of the Championship, but Martinez Losa explained that results were not the priority for the first half of the season.

He continued: “We are trying to give the players the right tools to compete at the highest level. It is about putting down the fundamentals to make the players understand properly so that they can perform well and become competitive with those tools.

“It is not about one thing or the other, it is about making progress and ensuring that

we are at the top of our game.

“I have some ideas and influences from top people in my career. I was lucky to work with people like Mauricio Pochettino when he started and he is now at Tottenham.

“But I am still learning here.

“You learn from the game, you learn from the coaches around you and it is a constant evolution. I am a very different coach now than what I was maybe five years ago, but it is one of the main qualities to have in football. You have to adapt to your players and to your club.”

When Martinez Losa arrived at Millwall Lionesses, Georgie Giddings and Leanne Cowan were the only players registered to the senior squad.

He knew it would be a difficult start to the campaign after they added a host of youngsters to their squad.

“We were put in an unusual situation when we arrived as we only had two

players. Obviously we had to bring in new players and we had the challenge of four or five new teams being introduced in the Women’s leagues, such as Charlton and Manchester United coming into our league,” Martinez Losa explained.

“It was a challenge, we were lucky to put a team together to be honest, we knew the girls were going to be young and inexperienced. I told the girls very clearly that I do not expect them to win games, I just wanted to see progress.

“We put a time frame from summer until Christmas, as we knew it was going to be the time when we would be suffering most because of the adaptation of the team and the links with the staff.”

The Lionesses have improved their performances recently. A draw with Sheffield United and then an honourable 3-1 defeat to Premier League champions, Arsenal Ladies, in the Continental Cup have put some optimism back into the

club.

Martinez Losa hinted that now that the fundamentals have been set out he expects the team’s performances to slowly improve in the second half of the season.

“It is clear an evolution is happening inside of the club as we needed to put some foundations down,” he said. “For instance, video analysis is now working perfectly with the players and their individual plans are also working perfectly, which was not quite there in September.

“Now, we can focus on improving the team. I think the results are a consequence of what we are trying to do behind the scenes. We are virtually an under-23s team competing at a professional level and that is a challenge.

“The positives are that the staff and the players are great, they come in with a smile on their face every day. Of course when we do not win a game they go

the entirety of Dulwich. The 3,000 strong sell-out crowd meant that pitch visibility was a luxury only enjoyed by the tallest, or those young and nimble enough to cling to the fences. But no one seemed to care. Unsurprisingly, the Rabble were in full voice and all of the club’s betterknown supporters were in attendance.

One fan named Bill received a Hamlet shirt commemorating his 99th birthday (he is rumoured to have witnessed the great Edgar Kail play in his prime), while Southwark’s pink and blue mayor, Catherine Rose, was greeted with the chant: “There’s only one mayor in Dulwich, one mayor in Dulwich...”

The game ended 2-1 to the Londoners.

Eastbourne Borough scored a late goal to set up a tense finish, which caused one outraged Dulwich fan to scream, “did you not read the bloody script?!”

However, lifelong Dulwich fan, Mishi Morath, did not seem fussed by the

scoreline.

“We won and for one of the first times in my life I couldn’t have cared less about the result. When we were locked out and they tried to claim our name it was one of the worst moments of my life, simple as that. So winning is just a bonus, really, it’s all about coming back here. I can’t believe we had a 3000 sell-out. You couldn’t see anything but it didn’t really matter, it was absolutely brilliant.”

Co-chair of the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust, Duncan Chapman, shed further light on the sentiments of those closest to the club.

“My primary emotion over the last few weeks has been worry and stress that something might go wrong. A few of us who had been most closely involved in the preparation had been saying that, come five o’clock on Wednesday that’s when we’ll relax, but not before then. Of course, it was a great result and the boys

won, but only when the game was done and everyone was safely out of the stadium did I feel that I could finally enjoy it.

“It was our return home and it was Boxing Day and so everyone was in a brilliant mood. It was just a lovely celebration of the football club and of the community in which we live.”

The day also saw a number of German fans – supporters of Altona 93, with whom Dulwich has an excellent relationship - come all the way from Hamburg for the game. They presented their London counterparts with a cup that Altona had been safeguarding while the Hamlet had been exiled in Tooting.

One of the German fans, Maya, said: “This is maybe the tenth Dulwich Hamlet game we have come to watch, and we have never seen them lose. The last game was at Tooting & Mitcham though, and it felt totally different, it didn’t feel like

BOXING DAY saw Dulwich Hamlet’s long-awaited return to Champion Hill stadium. The homecoming marked the victorious end to a painful battle, during which it occasionally appeared as if the club might cease to exist altogether.

However, in the end, Hamlet fans were treated to a fantastic Christmas gift.

Long before kick-off the streets of East Dulwich swarmed with pink and blue scarves. The Dulwich Hamlet Fish Bar – a sorry sight when I called in a few months ago – was packed full of customers filling their hungry bellies prematch. I arrived over an hour before kickoff and faced lengthy queues to enter the stadium with fans rumoured to have been piling in since before midday. The excitement was palpable and the fans were relishing being back in “Tuscany”.

The game was almost a side note to what appeared to be a festive gathering of

home unhappy but then on Monday they are back smiling with energy.

“We know that it is part of the process, but that does not mean we do not have ambition this year. It is this season that is a good opportunity for us build a structure because there is no relegation.

“It is the reason we made this decision, because maybe [if there was relegation] we may have gone for a different type of player. This season we are able to keep our integrity and develop our young players.

“The identity of the club still has to remain even if new people, like myself, have come in. It is about the players that we produce and that was our obligation to the club to carry on doing that.”

The Lionesses will resume their season on January the 5th where they will face Crystal Palace, a team they drew with at the beginning of the season and sit two points above them in the league.

Dulwich manger, Gavin Rose, summed the day up in his usual eloquent style.

“There’s one word I’d use to describe the atmosphere – electric. Seeing our local community come out in these numbers to support the team was unbelievable, and it made me feel very proud to lead the players out.

“All the directors and volunteers have done a great job to get the club ready.

Inside the bar looks fantastic, the pitch played very well and the dressing rooms are even improved. Generally it’s been a great effort. I appreciate it, and I know the players appreciate it”.

So, after many trials and tribulations Dulwich Hamlet are back at their traditional home. The day went smoothly off the pitch, and they even collected three points on it – a true Christmas miracle.

CHARLTON’S LOSS is looking more and more like it could be Millwall’s gain – as Danny McNamara continues to accelerate the early stages of his senior professional career at Welling United.

McNamara, 20 joined the National League South high-flyers initially on a month’s loan in November but Wings boss Steve King was so impressed with the defender he wanted him back as his side chases promotion.

From Sidcup, and growing up in a Millwall-mad family, McNamara’s ultimate aim is to play for his boyhood club that he first saw live at The Den when his dad, Tony, took him as a fiveyear-old on Boxing Day 2004, a 3-1 win over Championship leaders Ipswich Town.

His first time as an away supporter was at The Valley and he played for Charlton from the age of eight to fifteen.

But it didn’t work out in the end – and Tony let then Addicks academy boss and now Gillingham manager Steve Lovell know what he thought of how his son’s release was handled.

McNamara explains: “It was gutting, but towards the end of my time with Charlton I wasn’t enjoying my football.

I felt there was a lot of pressure, and I didn’t like it. I thought, ‘nah, I don’t want to do this anymore’.

“I had a game, and they must have known beforehand that I was going to get released, but made me play. After the game they pulled my dad aside and said they were going to release me.

Obviously my dad wasn’t too happy with how they went about it and had a few words with Steve Lovell. It didn’t really end on good terms but I’m happy I am where I am now.”

McNamara went to play for Southern Counties East Football League side Corinthian from Kent, where he got his first taste of senior football and fell back in love with the game.

His chance to move to Millwall came when Tony spoke to Peter Lodge, a goalkeeping coach at Millwall, and McNamara went for a trial.

It took just three weeks for him to impress enough to earn a scholarship, and the time to convince academy boss Scott Fitzgerald he was good enough

for a professional contract.

The day of reckoning came in the summer of 2016.

“Leading up to it I was nervous, I had no idea if I’d get a deal and I don’t think anyone did,” McNamara says. “It was going to be either yes or no. I couldn’t wait for the day to come. We had to go to The Den. You’ve got your own time slot. Everyone got there a bit earlier, you’re waiting in the car park.

“They call you and you sit in a room.

They told me I’d done well, what I could improve on and that they’d like to offer me a deal. The feeling was just

overwhelming. I’m a Millwall fan and my whole family are Millwall. I grew up in Sidcup, my family are from the Walworth Road and Bermondsey.

They’re all local so I was brought up with Millwall.

“Immediately I told my dad and he was just over the moon because his dream was to see me play for Millwall.

It was a dream come true for me. I went out for a meal with the family, but it was back to training the next morning.”

McNamara was soon joining in firstteam sessions, and remembers his first meeting with Neil Harris.

“He was my idol,” McNamara admits. “It was amazing meeting him when I first came over to the first team, meeting all the boys who I had been watching as part of the crowd. You get to the point where now you see the boys every day and you get enough of them!

“At the start it was quality.

“I was at Millwall at the time of the play-off final (against Bradford in 2017) and it was just the best feeling when Steve Morison scored.

“I was with my friends, who obviously knew I played for Millwall. I

was a bit tipsy when we scored and we all just ran down to the front and went mad. It was the best time.”

McNamara is a quick, aggressive defender, who is in the ideal environment with a club he loves to have the best chance of a professional career.

“I knew how Millwall played, they like someone who works hard and gives 100 per cent. That’s what I do.

That’s what I did from when I played my first game.

“Ever since going into Millwall I’ve loved it.”

The Lions could have made it far easier for themselves going into injury-time when one substitute, Aiden O’Brien, squared for another, Steve Morison, but the Millwall captain hit the post when he should have scored.

It was Millwall’s home form that ensured they would go into 2019 out

of the bottom three, six wins before the New Year coming at The Den. Harris made a point of praising Millwall fans for creating a “fantastic” atmosphere, and his side made it a nervy five minutes of injury-time by not getting the second, leading to that explosion of relief when referee Ton Harrington brought the contest to an end.

The next challenge for Millwall is to turn around their away form in similar fashion to last season.

He was just about to be asked about Millwall's first away league victory for 266-days, but quickly took a sip of his water before engaging. "Just let me have a drink," he joked. "You might want to get one as well if you've just watched that game."

It was action-packed, it was fast-paced, it swung one way, then another and then almost back the other way, but the Lions were not to be denied a deserved third consecutive Championship win despite a late rally from Ipswich.

After two big performances and results against Reading and Nottingham Forest in the previous week, Millwall could have been forgiven for looking a little weary. But their first half display at Portman Road was way below their usual high standards, even on the back of a hectic festive schedule.

The Tractor Boys started like a house on fire and the Lions fell behind – conceding their earliest goal this season – in less than two minutes. New Year, same old Millwall on the road, well that's how it seemed at the time.

Never mind the timing of the goal, but the pure simplicity of it would have angered Harris.

Freddie Sears broke forward and despite being cleaned out by Cooper, his pass found Jack Lankester on the right and he cut inside before arrowing a shot

into the far corner.

Their poor start so nearly turned into a disastrous one soon after. Ellis Harrison was causing a number of problems down the right. He skinned James Meredith before his deflected cross wasn't dealt with by five Millwall players. They all left it for one another, and Sears took advantage of their miscommunication and nipped in at the near post, but luckily for the Lions, Jordan Archer was alert to the danger and wonderfully blocked the former West Ham striker’s powerful effort from point-blank range.

It wouldn't take long before Harris' men were opened up again. This time Teddy Bishop was the provider, finding Sears, who had to score, but Ryan Tunnicliffe – who was the goalscoring hero against Forest on Saturday – produced a goalsaving block at the other end to keep it at 1-0.

They simply weren't at the races. That elusive away victory was looking a long shot.

Harris reacted to their dreadful first half showing by introducing Steve Morison at the break.

And instead of hauling off Elliott after his quiet half, he took off Meredith and dropped Ferguson to left-back – not for the first time this season. It would prove to be a masterstroke.

The Lions boss admitted that he came closer than anything to making a tactical substitution in the first half. It was that bad. "It was a horrendous first half," Harris said.

"I thought about changing the team – I don't think I've ever made a sub in the first half, unless it has been forced by injury or a red card. But it was probably the closest I've ever been to making a sub in the first half. I had a few choice words for the group and they responded in the second half."

It was classic Millwall. Not pretty, but mighty effective. Jake Cooper found Morison with his trademark long-pass.

He flicked on for Tom Elliott before he was upended in the box by Luke Chambers. The Lions were awarded their first spot-kick since October.

With Shaun Williams and Lee Gregory out injured, the responsibility was left to Shane Ferguson. The Northern Ireland international confidently picked up the ball and did the business from 12-yards.

Suddenly, a third victory in succession was looking somewhat likelier.

And just nine minutes later Millwall completed the turnaround. The influential Morison wonderfully picked out Elliott at the back post and the big striker headed back across for Cooper, who was in the right place to head home his fifth Championship goal of the season.

Remarkably, it didn't end there for Harris' side. O'Brien and Elliott epitomised their second half display by chasing a lost cause in the Ipswich penalty area. And once O'Brien got a foot on the ball, he backheeled for Elliott, who was left with the easy task of sticking the ball into an empty net. It was the first time that Millwall have scored three goals in a league away game for over two years.

Kayden Jackson spectacularly reduced the deficit two minutes from time, forcing Millwall to endure an agonising six minutes of injury-time, but they escaped unscathed and moved six points above the relegation zone.

O’Brien: ‘One minute you’re a hero and the next you’re not’

AIDEN O’BRIEN knows it’s a player’s lot to get flak from the crowd – but he prefers to ignore the jibes and do his talking with his performances.

The levels of abuse players are subjected to by fans has been headline news recently after alleged racism directed at Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling by a Chelsea supporter at Stamford Bridge in December.

O’Brien admits he has never heard racist abuse in his career and praised Sterling for his response in an Instagram post when he linked that treatment do the difference in some media coverage of black players and white players.

Republic of Ireland international O’Brien recognises that the use of social media isn’t suitable for every player, and he suggested that those that are affected by online abuse should avoid those communication platforms.

O’Brien is one of a number of Millwall players with Twitter and Instagram accounts, and earlier this season Jed Wallace responded to a Lions fan who had publicly criticised him for how he missed a chance against

Swansea.

Millwall fans aren’t known to be shy in expressing their dissatisfaction of their players’ performances, but O’Brien realises it is down to their love for the club.

“It happens here. We’ve lost a lot of games this season when we shouldn’t have lost,” O’Brien said. “You can hear it when you’re on the pitch - ‘Neil Harris out’ - it’s just a normal thing.

“If I miss a couple of chances in a game they’re all going to get on my back as well. It’s just the nature of the game. They’re so passionate about what they’re going to watch and what they’re supporting that if they feel like they need a moan then they’ll moan at someone they feel is not doing their job right.

“It doesn’t mean that they mean it from the bottom of their heart. One minute you’re a hero here and the next minute you’re not. That’s just how football is. You’ve just got to take it on the chin.

“A prime example was the Sterling video. He’s just kind of shaken it off, just walked off, ‘yeah whatever, mate’.

“You’ve just got to do that. I feel like if you give them a reaction you’re giving them what they want. They want you,

as a footballer, as someone they go to watch every week, to react to them so they can get that satisfaction. ‘Raheem Sterling/Aiden O’Brien/Steve Morison, we had a go at each other earlier.’ They go and tell their friends.

“It’s best to leave it and just shut them up by letting the football do the talking.

“There’s a lot of access to players on Instagram, Twitter, stuff like that, and if you’re mentally weak I would suggest not to be on Instagram and Twitter.

You’ll end up reading through the comments and letting it affect your game and you at home, because you’re bringing this home with you.

“If you feel like you’re getting affected by what people are saying then Instagram and Twitter are definitely not something you want to be involved in.

You do get a lot of stick – I should know!

“But it is a way of interacting with fans. Twitter and Instagram can be good because it gives a little window to fans into what you’re doing in training. They can feel like they’re involved in it. “[Sterling] could put that on his Instagram and the whole of his fan base were able to see it in that one post. It’s a good way to interact with the whole fan base, but if you’re mentally week it’s not worth having it.

“I haven’t heard racist abuse personally. I hope I never hear any, racism is a no-go and there never will be any justification for that type of behaviour.”

O’Brien is not a player that lacks confidence, and certainly not one who will let remarks from the stands affect him.

And there was one moment this season that further boosted his belief in his own ability, coming on his international debut in Poland in September.

O’Brien wasn’t too surprised to see Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane leave their posts after a poor 2018, though he defends their preparation, which had been under scrutiny.

O’Brien hopes to be in new Ireland manager Mick McCarthy’s plans.

much confidence, scoring for my country was the icing on the cake of my football career and luckily I’ve done it,” O’Brien said.

“I don’t want to stop there, I know I can score more for my club and for my country if given game time.

“I can’t wait to see what happens in my future. I’ll keep working and smiling and I just love being around football, love being around Millwall.

“The Ireland boys are great as well and I can’t wait to see what Mick McCarthy has in mind. If he has me in mind I’ll give it my all like I do with this gaffer here.

“The results weren’t going our way, it wasn’t a good time for the country. We were all giving our all, all preparing right, it wasn’t like we weren’t. Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane and the rest of the backroom staff were doing everything they could to understand the opposition, what we wanted to do with our game plan.

“Everything was set up but on the day we just couldn’t get results. I want to wish them the best, it’s on to a new era now with Mick McCarthy. Hopefully he can hit the ground running and get the first win under him because that’s what the country needs.”

Harris’ x-rated half-time words led to team turn-around

MILLWALL STRIKER Tom Elliott has revealed the harsh words that Neil Harris delivered to his side at half-time during their 3-2 victory at Ipswich Town on New Year's Day.

With the Lions trailing 1-0 at the break thanks to an early Jack Lankester goal, Harris was in no mood to hide his emotions.

But after a stern talking to, his side responded with three second half goals as they picked up their first away win since April and their third straight Championship success.

"He wasn't the politest. I wouldn't put

children in there. You'd have to be 18 and over - maybe 21," Elliott said.

"He's a passionate guy, a passionate manager and he had every right to be angry at us so. We came out second half and we used his passion in a positive way and reacted.

"First half we were below par - I'd say that and so would everyone else – that we were miles below it.

"We weren't showing the quality that we have, and I don't know if the boys were tired because we've had three games in six days or what, but we came out for the second half and showed that we can dig deep.

"We showed that we have that heart and spirit and togetherness. We've done that a lot this season, coming back into games - look at Nottingham Forest and

Aston Villa and we've done it again today."

Despite playing a part in all three of Millwall's goals – assisting the first two before scoring the third – Elliott was far from satisfied with his own performance.

"I was below par but it's one of them where everyone in the team is going to dig deep and your touch and passing might not be there, but you're going to keep going and keep going.

"We won this game by hard work, digging deep and through our togetherness. The quality wasn't there today but we are a good team, a strong team. We've got nine points out of nine over the Christmas period, so it's a good Christmas and a Happy New Year."

Elliott was fouled by Luke Chambers for the penalty that led to the equalising

goal and admitted it was the right decision.

"I was just running onto the ball and my eyes lit up because I was going to have a chance on goal, but then I got wiped out," he said. For me, it was correct.

"I think Willo [Shaun Williams] has taken most of them this season and scored two or three, but Fergie [Shane Ferguson] sent the keeper the wrong way and yes, it was a good penalty. As long as it goes in the back of the net, it's a good penalty."

Asked whether he would like to take a penalty in the future, Elliott said: "Yes. I was next to take one to be honest, if Fergie didn't fancy it, but we didn't want to fight after seeing the Fulham game last week."

NEIL HARRIS has revealed that Millwall will be adding to their squad in the January transfer window.

The Lions will most likely be in the market for a striker, with Tom Bradshaw out for the rest of the season with a knee injury and Lee Gregory set to miss the next month of action with a calf problem.

This time last year, Millwall signed Ben Marshall, Tim Cahill, Jason Shackell and Harry Toffolo.

Asked whether he expects to be busy in the January transfer window, Harris said: "Yes. We have identified targets and spoken to clubs already about players coming in. There will be additions.

"On the whole, I have been delighted with nine points in a week, but in the first half of the season we haven't been good enough, standards wise.

"We need to add to the squad, we need to add some experience to the squad, some competition to the squad, certainly and if players end up going the other way – loan players go back out to the clubs they have been at or players go out the building, sold or on loan.

"I have got no issues with that whatsoever, I need to freshen the group up, I need to make some changes and we will be doing that during the window."
