FEARS HAVE been raised of rubbish collection chaos over the Christmas period after Southwark’s refuse collectors voted to strike.

Workers at Southwark’s Veolia depot, the contractor responsible for bin collections, voted overwhelmingly for a strike in a row over changes to sickness policy and Christmas work.The GMB union slammed the policy changes as ‘draconian’ but Veolia has said it is ‘disappointed’ with workers’ decision to stage a walkout.

London’s newest war memorial is unveiled in Walworth Square

WALWORTH

LONDON’S NEWEST war memorial was unveiled in a moving ceremony in Walworth Square this week.

Designed by Scottish artist Kenny Hunter, the bronze artwork is named I’ll hold my human barrier, after a World War Two poem by Hamish Henderson.

It depicts an anonymous youth standing on a giant, fallen ash tree, and is inscribed with a line from the poem: ‘Against the armour of the storm I’ll hold my human barrier’.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

AYLESBURY’S KAYODE PENS AND STARS IN NEW BBC COMEDY SET ON ESTATE

THE AYLESBURY Estate is the star of a new BBC comedy show starting on iPlayer next week - and written by one of its former residents.

BBC Three's Enterprice follows the ‘lovable but unpredictable’ Kazim and his more serious-minded business partner Jeremiah, as they try to make a hit of their home delivery service Speedi-Kazz.

surreal, and totally unpredictable’ and claims ‘Elephant and Castle has never looked so cinematic’.

The programme is written by and starsg local talent in 25-year-old Kayode Ewumi, along with Trieve BlackwoodCambridge.

Kayode, who plays Kazim, grew up on the Aylesbury before his family moved to East Street.

The former English Martyrs primary schoolboy, who went on to St Thomas the Apostle in Peckham, told the News: "My borough has been in the press lately for very negative reasons. I chose

Aylesbury Estate to try and bring some positivity.

“Aylesbury Estate on the show is beautiful, nice and pretty. There's no violence - more like a light-hearted narrative to the show."

Kayode burst onto the scene in 2016 as Mr 'roll safe aka triple threat'- the star of Internet series #HoodDocumentary which went viral hours after its debut and led to an extended version launching on iPlayer.

"Enterprice is about perseverance", he says. "Kazim and his best friend are both Nigerian boys who have to prove

themselves - something I had to do when I was growing up.”

He created Enterprice after taking a break from acting to focus on writing, in 2017, and also used the time out to help young people in Southwark get into the performing arts.

Last year he attended the 'Confidence versus Courage' talk at the TED theatre in Peckham, and also launched 'film stars' - acting projects for children at his local church.

He says: "I'm a story teller. I enjoy writing whatever comes to heart. I work alone and truly enjoy what I do. It is

always better to just live in the moment."

Kayode also has no plans to leave the borough anytime soon: "It's my home. It represents love, creativity and perseverance. The way Southwark is being portrayed on TV is terrible especially in the height of knife crime.

"Enterprice is like a love letter for Elephant and Castle from me as a way to say 'thank you' to my borough."

Enterprice is available now on BBC Three as a Boxset, and will be repeated on Friday nights after the Graham Norton Show.

SOUTHWARK’S BIN collectors have voted for a strike in a row over changes to the contactor’s sickness policy.

Workers at Veolia’s Southwark refuse depot voted 92 per cent in favour of industrial action on a turnout of 57.5 per cent on Wednesday, after Veolia made changes to its sickness and alcohol and drug testing policies.

As the News reported at the start of balloting, the moves were blasted as ‘draconian’ by the union, but Veolia said it was disappointed at the branch’s moves to strike.

Nadine Houghton, a GMB regional organiser, told the News: “We are urging Veolia to get around the table with us because we actually think this dispute can be solved. “[But] until we have it confirmed in writing that changes to the ‘trigger’ system is off the table, we will continue with this action.”

A spokesperson for Veolia said: "Veolia has engaged in national discussions with the GMB on this dispute and agreed to participate in conciliation through ACAS.” ACAS is a governmental body which helps to mediate industrial disputes.

Veolia’s spokesperson added: “We are therefore disappointed that the GMB has pursued this course of action outside of the national agreement we have with them and prior to the opportunity for these discussions to take place.”

No timetable for the strike has yet been set out, said Ms Houghton, but the ballot vote leaves open the possibility of strike action within the next six months.

If the strike were to go ahead, it would begin with one or two days of industrial action, before escalating if Veolia did not back down on its policy changes.

Other depot-specific issues are behind the vote for strike action Ms Houghton added, including a dispute over Christmas work.

The GMB union alleges that the sickness policy changes mean that refuse collectors at the Southwark depot only have to be sick for six days before being moved onto a formal ‘sickness management’ process.

It has slammed the change as “creating a culture of fear and intimidation” saying it was an “unacceptable” way of treating manual workers.

Strike balloting was also due to take place in several other south London depots, including Lambeth, Kingston and Richmond.

Veolia holds contracts for waste management with a large number of local authorities across the country including Southwark.

Federation running Rotherhithe and Dog Kennel Hill schools launched a green crowd-funder for face masks while others have fitted air purification units in class

A SOUTHWARK primary school federation has launched a green crowd-funder which would give children face masks to protect them from harmful pollution on the way to school.

Part of the money from the fundraiser, called Clean up River Hill, would be for “all children to have a mask to wear to school to protect from pollution” according to its fundraising page.

The River Hill federation runs Rotherhithe Primary School and Dog Kennel Hill Primary School in East Dulwich.

Among the other fundraising goals are measures to educate pupils on sustainability and recycling; to grow a green-screen in the schools’ playgrounds; and to install plastic recycling facilities at the schools.

Doug Kennell Hill parent Anna Randle said: “The federation has decided to develop its sustainability agenda, which I think is to be applauded, and will be supported by most parents.

“While I think any efforts to respond to air quality are positive, this does seem incredibly depressing - the idea that small kids need to wear masks to protect them in their normal environment, and that parents need to support this financially.

“Myself and some other parents believe that instead London schools and parents should be putting pressure on government, the mayor and local councils to improve air quality, as this is actually the problem.”

The News could not reach anyone at the Federation for comment.

The fundraising page asks parents to back the project because it would “improve the local environment and make children’s journeys to school and their time in school healthier and safer.”

The move comes as other primary schools in the borough take steps to address air quality in-and-around their school.

Goose Green Primary School, in East Dulwich, unveiled air purification units inside of its classrooms on Monday, paid for by Southwark Council’s Cleaner Greener Safer fund.

The units act on indoor pollutants as well as emissions that drift in from the busy road outside.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Cabinet Member for environment, transport management and air quality, said the units were part of the council’s efforts to help schools tackle air pollution.

He said: “We have helped to provide green ivy screens, facilitated road closures at drop off and pick up times and helped schools with travel plans, which encourage cycling, walking and scootering.

“We also welcome all of the schools in

the borough to come together, share ideas and hear from leading experts, at our Southwark Schools Air Quality Network meetings.”

Simon Wattam, head teacher at Goose Green, added that while air protection units were “necessary sticking plaster mitigation measures”, the school also

wanted to encourage pupils to become greener.

He said: “That is why we are also engaging with the council to discuss School Streets and helping parents and children choose active travel as well as implementing measures such as the green screen and classroom air protection units.”

REVELLERS ‘INVADE BLOCK OF FLATS’

CONCERN HAS been raised over the use of Airbnb-style short-term lets for revellers, after one group allegedly invaded a block of flats in Surrey Quays.

The group turned up for a flat, allegedly rented on Airbnb at Water Gardens Square near to Surrey Quays Road in the early hours of the morning on Saturday November 17.

Police said they were called to reports of “excessive noise and antisocial behaviour” at the complex and managed to disperse the group. No arrests were made.

One resident writing on social media said the scene was “shocking”, saying “literally hundreds” of people flooded the building.

“This was some Airbnb going rough”, claimed a resident. “Our on-site security was struggling to deal with the huge flow of people.

“I went out to check the situation and it was really scary and intimidating. It took five police officers to clear things out.”

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Public Health, said: “We would encourage companies who manage private blocks to follow our example, and use leaseholder and tenancy agreements to stop people from renting their homes out on a short term basis as well.”

Leaseholder agreements in the private housing complex already bar short-term lets, the News understands.

Tenants in council accommodation are in breach of their contact if they offer rooms on Airbnb or similar sites.

Cllr Akoto said: “Southwark Council has already cracked down on short term lets with council tenants and leaseholders, reminding them that council homes should be used as homes and they are in breach of their tenancy or lease if they offer their home on short term lets.”

However Cllr Hamish McCallum, housing spokesman for the opposition Lib Dems, criticised the council for not introducing a borough-wide licensing scheme to tackle anti-social behaviour in

short lets.

He said: “At the last Council Assembly, Southwark Liberal Democrats called for the council to introduce a borough-wide licensing scheme where landlords would have to set out in writing how they intend to reduce anti-social behaviour from tenants, guests and visitors, but we were disappointed that Labour councillors voted against our suggestion.”

The issue was raised in a successful motion at full Council Assembly in July, which called on the Cabinet to make sure its ban on Airbnb-style lets in council properties was advertised.

THE DIRECTOR of nursing at South London and Maudsley NHS Trust says the problems on its acute wards are ‘absolutely unacceptable’, but that in some cases the only other option would have been to turn patients away.

As the News reported last week, the Care Quality Commission’s report found ‘breaches of fundamental standards of care’ in acute wards, leading them to be rated ‘inadequate’.

These included over 30 patients left sleeping on sofas and in temporary rooms last year, wards being completely full, health checks not taking place after tranquilisation, and staff failing to take accurate records of when and why physical restraints had been used.

Speaking to the News, Beverley Murphy said of the bed crisis: “It is absolutely unacceptable and crosses a red line,” she said, “Everyone should be treated with privacy and dignity.

“What they did in those thirty-six cases is the best they could do at the time.

“It is not right but I cannot support staff turning away patients.

“We are really sorry that that been put in that position.

“It is not their responsibility to manage the flow of patients, it is our responsibility as leaders to manage it better.”

She says the hospital is aiming to keep its acute wards at around 85 per cent occupancy to avoid this in future, but this is difficult when some patients are unable to leave as they have no suitable housing to go to.

TWO VOLUNTEERS at King’s College Hospital have won Southwark Stars Awards for their community work.

Eighty-eight-year-old Marthy Bonnerjea was named as ‘older volunteer of the year’ after first giving her support to King’s four years ago at its haematology unit.

The former British Embassy and British Council worker was inspired to join King’s as a volunteer after her husband was treated at the hospital and is now one of its 600-strong volunteering team.

“My husband was very ill and received treatment in the Haematology Unit,” she said.

“The staff looked after him and they were all marvellous, everyone was so kind and went out of their way to provide the best possible care.

“When he passed away, I decided I wanted to do something for King’s.”

Marty keeps patients company, helps with admin, and makes teas and coffees.

Her fellow volunteer, Merle Spencer, was also recognised for her support of King’s after completing more than 500 hours since January this year.

Merle helps with admin for the chaplaincy team, which she joined in June 2017.

“I like that I can put my admin skills to use. I’m 72 now and the work keeps my brain ticking,” she said.

Both were recognised at the Southwark Stars awards last week, which celebrate those who volunteer and help make Southwark a better place.

NURSING HEAD: ‘We crossed a red line, everyone should be treated with dignity’

“If you are held face down on a floor, you would not feel very safe, or very valued, and it does put a patient at risk of asphyxia. Any restraint is risky,” she said.

“We know that in some of our wards we are making real progress on reducing that.”

Overall the NHS Trust, which includes the Denmark Hill-based Maudsley hospital and Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham, was awarded a ‘good’ rating

in last month’s report, with most of its work found to be ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’.

In particular, the care and compassion shown by staff across the Trust was praised by inspectors.

Ms Murphy believes by supporting staff to develop resilience and look after their own mental health, especially after serious incidents, they can stop nurses from ‘triggering’ and use restraints when a situation can be calmed down without.

She describes the overall picture for

mental health services as one of ‘high need, low investment’, and is pushing for ‘parity of esteem’ between mental health and physical health services.

“It was hard getting the rating, but this is an opportunity for us,” she said. “I think our commissioners are sitting up and taking notice.

“People with a mental health problem deserve the same services. Mental health is no less important, but the funding is so much less”.

King’s Trust £1 million payout for IT manager

A FORMER IT manager at King’s College NHS Trust has been awarded a £1million pay-out after an employment tribunal found the Trust guilty of racial discrimination and unfair dismissal.

Richard Hastings had been accused of assault in an incident involving a delivery driver and a contractor and was dismissed for gross misconduct in October 2015, despite an exemplary work record.

Mr Hastings tried to take a note of the van’s registration number and defend himself after the tribunal was told the delivery driver racially abused him in the hospital’s car-park.

The tribunal heard that the Trust’s investigation consistently painted Mr Hastings as the aggressor while the contractors were seen as victims.

A failure to investigate the racial abuse of the IT manager – who is of Caribbean descent – and the difference between his treatment and the contractors’ led the tribunal to find the Trust had racially discriminated against him.

The Trust has since apologised for the way Mr Hastings was treated, who had been an employee since 1996.

represented Mr Hastings, said: “Richard was the victim of an institution whose desire for an easy solution resulted in a total disregard for the wellbeing of an employee of nearly 20 years.

“The Tribunal found that the Trust’s initial investigation into Mr Hastings’ suspension was ‘fundamentally flawed’ and served only to support the organisation’s bias towards our client.”

The “substantial damages” reflected the “significant” loss of Mr Hasting’s pension following the dismissal, Ms Brown added.

A Trust spokesperson said it had apologised for how it had handled the disciplinary proceedings and would like to extend the apology again.

The spokesperson said: “The Trust has apologised to Mr Hastings and we would like to extend that apology once again.

“King’s is proud to be a major multicultural employer serving one of the most diverse communities in the UK and has implemented a number of changes to improve the support given to its staff.”

Green traffic protesters hold ‘funeral march’

Activists from Extinction Rebellion held the ‘Rebellion Day 2’ in the form of a funeral march at Parliament Square to “mourn all the life we’ve lost, are losing and are still to lose.”

An estimated one thousand protesters turned up dressed in black to ‘mourn’ the species lost due to climate change.

The group also held planning meetings this week in London to discuss what further disruption should take place, but has warned of proposed mass action on April 15.

The action came on top of a run of traffic disruption at Elephant and Castle roundabout causing severe delays to commuters at rush hour last week.

Protesters stood at the junction of Elephant and Castle roundabout blockading morning traffic on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to raise awareness over climate change.

The move was slammed by some commuters, who said the protest made them late for work or hospital appointments.

One said: “You made my son late for school and lots of people late for work!

Are we supposed to thank you for that?

All you’re doing is p***ing the British public off.”

Another said they had to cancel their brain scan as a result of the traffic, saying: “Protest in an area that’s not a major area where people need to get to work or hospital in my case.

I had to cancel my EEG appointment because we were stuck by Old Kent Road fly-over for over an hour.”

The group shot into the headlines earlier this month when they blockaded many of London’s major bridges, including Southwark, Tower, Lambeth and Blackfriars.

LONDON’S BLACK cab drivers are blockading London Bridge this week in a row over proposed traffic restrictions to Tooley Street.

The protest, which began on Monday evening, caused delays to numerous bus routes but drivers vowed to continue with the disruption until black cabs are guaranteed to be allowed to use the same routes as buses. However TfL has labelled the move “unnecessary.”

Among the plans are a controversial measure to restrict east-bound traffic along Duke Street Hill and Tooley Street to cyclists and buses only.

Grant Davis, chairman of the London Cab Drivers Club, based in Bermondsey, told the News: “We’re not having them restricting our work practices. It’s an absolute disgrace, it’s all just a happy-clappy ‘let’s ban the cabs.’”

“They’re not only restricting us, they’re restricting our passengers too.

Where buses go, taxis should be able to go, too.”

Mr Davis said blockading traffic was a “blunt instrument” but added: “When you have a licensing authority like TfL who won’t listen, you have to.”

Ben Plowden, TfL’s Director of Strategy and Network Development, said: “A consultation is currently underway on changes to Tooley Street to improve conditions for people walking and cycling, or traveling by public transport.

THE DIRECTOR of nursing at South London and Maudsley NHS Trust says the problems on its acute wards are ‘absolutely unacceptable’, but that in some cases the only other option would have been to turn patients away.

As the News reported last week, the Care Quality Commission’s report found ‘breaches of fundamental standards of care’ in acute wards, leading them to be rated ‘inadequate’.

These included over 30 patients left sleeping on sofas and in temporary rooms last year, wards being completely full, health checks not taking place after tranquilisation, and staff failing to take accurate records of when and why physical restraints had been used.

Speaking to the News, Beverley Murphy said of the bed crisis: “It is absolutely unacceptable and crosses a red line,” she said, “Everyone should be treated with privacy and dignity.

“What they did in those thirty-six cases is the best they could do at the time.

“It is not right but I cannot support staff turning away patients.

“We are really sorry that they’ve been put in that position. It is not their responsibility to manage the flow of patients, it is our responsibility as leaders to manage it better.”

She says the hospital is aiming to keep its acute wards at around 85 per cent occupancy to avoid this in future, but this is difficult when some patients are unable to leave, as they have no suitable housing to go to.

TWO VOLUNTEERS at King’s College Hospital have won Southwark Stars Awards for their community work.

Eighty-eight-year-old Marthy Bonnerjea was named as ‘older volunteer of the year’ after first giving her support to King’s four years ago at its haematology unit.

The former British Embassy and British Council worker was inspired to join King’s as a volunteer after her husband was treated at the hospital, and is now one of its 600-strong volunteering team.

“My husband was very ill and received treatment in the Haematology Unit,” she said.

“The staff looked after him and they were all marvellous, everyone was so kind and went out of their way to provide the best possible care.

“When he passed away, I decided I wanted to do something for King’s.”

Marty keeps patients company, helps with admin, and makes teas and coffees.

Her fellow volunteer, Merle Spencer, was also recognised for her support of King’s after completing more than 500 hours since January this year.

Merle helps with admin for the chaplaincy team, which she joined in June 2017.

“I like that I can put my admin skills to use. I’m 72 now and the work keeps my brain ticking,” she said.

Both were recognised at the Southwark Stars awards last week, which celebrate those who volunteer and help make Southwark a better place.

“If you are held face down on a floor, you would not feel very safe, or very valued, and it does put a patient at risk of asphyxia. Any restraint is risky,” she said.

“We know that in some of our wards we are making real progress on reducing that.”

Overall the NHS Trust, which includes the Denmark Hill-based Maudsley hospital and Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham, was awarded a ‘good’ rating in last month’s report, despite the

problems highlighted in acute care, with most of its work found to be ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’.

In particular, the care and compassion shown by staff across the Trust was praised by inspectors.

Ms Murphy believes by supporting staff to develop resilience and look after their own mental health, especially after serious incidents, they can stop nurses from ‘triggering’ and use restraints when a situation can be calmed down without.

She describes the overall picture for

mental health services as one of ‘high need, low investment’, and is pushing for ‘parity of esteem’ between mental health and physical health services.

“It was hard getting the rating, but this is an opportunity for us,” she said. “I think our commissioners are sitting up and taking notice.

“People with a mental health problem deserve the same services. Mental health is no less important, but the funding is so much less”.

King’s Trust £1 million payout for IT manager

A FORMER IT manager at King’s College NHS Trust has been awarded a £1million pay-out after an employment tribunal found the Trust guilty of racial discrimination and unfair dismissal.

Richard Hastings had been accused of assault in an incident involving a delivery driver and a contractor and was dismissed for gross misconduct in October 2015, despite an exemplary work record. Mr Hastings tried to take a note of the van’s registration number and defend himself after the tribunal was told the delivery driver racially abused him in the hospital’s car-park.

The tribunal heard that the Trust’s investigation consistently painted Mr Hastings as the aggressor while the contractors were seen as victims.

A failure to investigate the racial abuse of the IT manager – who is of Caribbean descent – and the difference between his treatment and the contractors’ led the tribunal to find the Trust had racially discriminated against him.

The Trust has since apologised for the way Mr Hastings was treated, who had been an employee since 1996.

firm Excello Law which represented Mr Hastings, said: “Richard was the victim of an institution whose desire for an easy solution resulted in a total disregard for the wellbeing of an employee of nearly 20 years.

“The Tribunal found that the Trust’s initial investigation into Mr Hastings’ suspension was ‘fundamentally flawed’ and served only to support the organisation’s bias towards our client.”

The “substantial damages” reflected the “significant” loss of Mr Hasting’s pension following the dismissal, Ms Brown added. A Trust spokesperson said it had apologised for how it had handled the disciplinary proceedings and would like to extend the apology again.

The spokesperson said: “The Trust has apologised to Mr Hastings and we would like to extend that apology once again. King’s is proud to be a major multicultural employer serving one of the most diverse communities in the UK and has implemented a number of changes to improve the support given to its staff.”

NEARLY FIVE hundred 'fatbergs' had to be cleared from Southwark's sewers in the last year, says Thames Water, as it launches a public campaign to raise awareness about what can and can't be flushed.

Fatbergs are giant, hardened blockages of nappies, sanitary towels and tampons that have mixed with cooking oils and fat poured down the sink.

For the last three years in a row there have been around 500 blockages in Southwark, causing a headache for the company, which says it spends eighteen million pounds a year clearing blockages across its system, with the vast majority caused by fatbergs.

Last year, the biggest ever fatberg - two football pitches long and weighing the same as eleven double-decker buses - was removed from sewers in east London, with parts of it displayed in the Museum of London.

Thames Water is now raising awareness of the issue and wants to highlight what can and can't be flushed.

Many people believe wet wipes can be flushed - with some labelled as such on their packaging - but these are one of the biggest contributors to the problem.

Flushing nappies and other waste also contributes to plastic pollution.

A survey published last week by Thames Water shows that four in ten people admit to flushing wipes, nappies and sanitary products down the loo.

Fourteen per cent say it is more convenient than binning them, thirteen per cent think they can be flushed, and seven per cent said they do not even think about it before doing so.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL is doing its bit to help reduce high levels of obesity in the borough by pledging to ditch unhealthy snacks where possible.

The council has signed the Local Government Declaration on Healthier Food and Sugar Reduction. It has

committed to looking at its corporate advertising and sponsorship deals, as well as supporting local businesses and groups to improve the food they offer, plus help make public events healthier.

The council says it will continue to raise awareness of the damage done by fizzy drinks – including its flagship Fizz Free February campaign, which encourages residents to give up fizzy pop for the month as a first step toward

reducing the amount they drink over time.

Another initiative restricts the number of takeaway shops, with a 400m exclusion zone around secondary schools.

More than half of the low-paid jobs in capital are held by women

ESPITE THE Equal Pay Act in 1970, women still earn less than men in Britain today and the gender pay gap in London is widening.

It currently stands at 19.9% with the UK average sitting below this at 13.7%. Businesses in London must do better.

More than half of the low-paid jobs in the capital are held by women. There are a number of reasons for this, and a number of solutions.

Women are more likely to be in low-paid or part-time work largely due to childcare responsibilities as women are still more likely to be the primary care givers. Trust for London found that 55% of low paid jobs in the capital are held by women. One of the solutions to this is flexible working.

Timewise Flexible Jobs Index 2018 revealed that the proportion of quality jobs (paid £20k+ FTE) advertised with flexible working options is only 11%. This supply falls well short of the extremely high demand, with an estimated 87% of employees wanting to

work flexibly. Flexible working rights are essential to enabling women with children to participate in the workforce, and to support fathers to care. I believe that all employers and businesses in London should be encouraged to advertise all job roles as ‘flexible’ by default, unless there is a strong business case not to do so.

The Fawcett Society found that the pay gap varies across the life course. It is at its lowest for women aged 18-21 at 5.1% and widens significantly for women in their fifties to 19.4%.

Shockingly, the gender pay gap also continues and worsens into our pensions.

The pension pay gap is often not given as much attention as the pay gap for women in work but it is just as important and significant.

Research suggests the gap between men and women’s pension income is more than twice that of the gender pay gap.

A study by the Union Progress found that pension income for female retirees was 39.5% lower than for men that year, or around

£7,000. This is due to the fact that women are more likely to work part-time or work multiple low paid jobs. This means that women are more likely than men to miss out on auto-enrolment contributions paid by employers into a workplace pension scheme.

Women also lose out on contributions if they take time out of work to care for children.

Or for women working multiple part-time jobs that pay below the NI threshold, despite their contribution to society they are often missing out on any state pension entitlement. It is not right or fair that low paid women with several jobs do not qualify for state pensions and that childbirth should mean a loss of pension contributions.

FACE MASKS FOR CHILDREN ARE A STICKING PLASTER FOR POLLUTION PROBLEM, BUT A SERIOUS ATTEMPT TO HIGHLIGHT THIS ISSUE

O FUNDRAISE for children to be issued with face masks to protect them from harmful pollution on the way to school does seem drastic. However, this is on the back of continued effort to reduce the appalling high levels of air pollution in the borough.

Last year the News published the findings of a Greenpeace investigation that revealed dangerous levels of nitrogen dioxide near 44 nurseries and pre-schools in Southwark.

The environmental organisation’s analysis of Government data showed Southwark, as a local authority, ranked the fifth highest in London for the number of nurseries within 150 metres of a road breaching the legal NO2 limit.

As well as the face masks, other schools in Southwark and across London are installing air purifiers in classrooms, discouraging parents from using their cars on the school run and doing more to drive the environmental message home.

Study after study has shown a direct link to young people living within built up areas and having respiratory problems like asthma. Indeed Rotherhithe Primary, which is one of the two schools fundraising for masks is on a very busy and often congested junction.

Clearly issuing the masks will not solve the problem and some have even claimed it is not even a good sticking plaster.

Dr Ben Barratt from King’s College London university went so far as to say it would do more harm than good. He told the Guardian’s environmental section: “Increasing the physical activity of kids is extremely important and anything that hinders that may do more harm than good... we must rapidly and effectively remove the source of air pollution, not punish those who are not responsible for creating it.”

But whether the River Hill Federation, which runs Rotherhithe Primary School and Dog Kennel Hill Primary School in East Dulwich is right or slightly misguided in its push for masks they are proactively trying to deal with a very serious issue for our children. Unlike the protestors holding up traffic on the bridges and at the Elephant and Castle it is unlikely to cause such a backlash that the main message is lost in huge amount of anger it triggers.

when the GLA was named in the Times Top 50 Employers for Women. Out of the ten Deputy Mayors in his team, Sadiq has appointed six women. He also oversaw female Commissioners for the London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police Service.

However, this is only a small dent in the problem. It is crucial that businesses across London look at how they can work to close the pay gap within their organisations quickly and encourage the brilliant women that make up our city.

THE CO-CHAIR of Southwark’s anti knife-crime forum said she was ‘delighted and relieved’ after the Met was ordered to clean up its controversial ‘gangs matrix’ database.

Every borough in London has their own database of suspected gang members and people at risk of gangrelated violence, which form a Londonwide database.

Names, dates of birth, addresses and information on repeated weapons carrying is stored and can be shared with other agencies including local authorities, education providers and even job centres.

In a statement released this month, the ICO said its investigation - which began in October last year after the charity Amnesty International raised concerns over the matrix's use - found that 'whilst there was valid purpose for the database, the inconsistent way it was being used did not comply with data protection rules'.

The ICO found that the matrix does not clearly distinguish between the approach to victims of gang-related crime and the perpetrators, leading to confusion amongst those using it', and that while some boroughs followed best practice, implementation was inconsistent with some areas 'poor' in comparison.

There were also 'serious breaches' of data protection law - mostly affecting young, black men who are disproportionately listed on the matrix.

The ICO has now issued an enforcement notice to ensure the Met complies with data protection laws in future - police will have six months to fully implement the changes.

Elena Noel, who co-chairs Southwark’s anti knife-crime forum, told the News: “ I am delighted and relieved by the findings and ruling of the Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham who has held the Metropolitan Police to account asking it to act in a way that is compliant with UK laws and Human Rights within the next six months .

"The Met cannot have in place a gangs matrix system that blatantly discriminates and targets black men.

“The police has to work with the black

community and the wider community to build trust to tackle the epidemic knife crime and serious violence issues in Southwark and across London.

“Tensions are rising. There does need to be a method to identify those in gangs and those involved in serious violence, however the gangs matrix in its current form and usage by the Metropolitan Police is not it.”

The Met has said it accepts the findings and is 'working hard to address them'.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner,

Duncan Ball said: "We have already started work to ensure that we improve our data handling and information sharing with partners, who are also involved in community safety work.

"As well as addressing the concerns within the ICO report, we are also taking forward additional work including the introduction of a public facing website to explain the legal framework for the gangs matrix and further information to improve public confidence and transparency.”

Teen charged in the fatal stabbing of Sidique Kamara

A TEENAGER has been charged by detectives investigating the fatal stabbing of Sidique Kamara (pictured) in Camberwell this August.

The sixteen-year-old was charged last Thursday, November 22, with wounding with intent and robbery.

He was bailed to appear at Bromley Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, December 27.

The news comes after Kenneth Umezie, aged 31, from Camberwell, was charged with murder on Tuesday, August 7. He will stand trial on Monday, January 28, at Central Criminal Court. Two other men - aged twenty and eighteen - were arrested on suspicion of murder, and remain released under investigation.

Kamara was found injured on Warham Street on August 1 after police were called at about 7.21pm.

A BOROUGH man appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court last week charged with the murder of a 52-year-old in Chessington, Kingston.

Woman dies after being hit by a train

A WOMAN died after being hit by a train at Canada Water station last week.

The emergency services were called to the station shortly after 12.30am last Thursday (November 22) to reports of the woman being struck by the train.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, the woman could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman has not yet been named by the authorities.

Her family have been informed, a British Transport Police spokesman told the News.

The BTP spokesperson added: “This incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Police had attempted to stop the motorist, believed to have been driving a ‘Drive-Now’ hire car, on Jamaica Road close to the Rotherhithe Tunnel at around 12:40am last Wednesday week (November 21).

But police said the driver failed to stop and then collided with a second car, a white minicab.

The collision left the car crashing

through the railings of Southwark Park – next to a sign saying ‘Switch your engine off.’

A police spokesperson told the News that the motorist fled from the scene on foot.

However, police said the car was not been actively pursued at the time of the stop.

A witness told the News that he believed the occupants of the white minicab were not injured, while the occupants of the black hire vehicle had ran off after crashing into the park’s railings.

No-one was reported injured in the smash and police said that their

enquiries were continuing.

There have no arrests.

The News asked the hire company, Drive-Now, if it was aware of the incident, but it was unable to give comment without a vehicle registration number.

It is not the first crash on Jamaica Road this month.

On Friday, November 16, a teenager was rushed to hospital with non lifethreatening injuries in a collision on the road.

Meanwhile on Saturday November 10, a traffic police vehicle crashed into the traffic lights on the road’s junction, putting them temporarily out of action.

Gerald Matovu, 25, of Guildford Street, was charged with the murder of Eric Michels, who was found dead in his home in August.

Matovu was also charged with a string of eight more offences involving three other victims.

He was charged with administering a poison with intent to endanger life / inflict grievous bodily harm; assault on a male aged 13 or over by penetration; and assault occasioning actual bodily harm on one male victim.

He was also charged for theft in relation to that victim.

A separate charge of theft related to another victim while he was also charged with theft in relation to a third victim.

Matovu was also charged with possession of the class C drug, GBH, as well as possession with intent to supply the drug.

A further charge of fraud by false representation related to a fourth victim.

Life is certainly busy in Year 3! Pupils follow a conventional curriculum for English and maths which is enhanced by the International Primary Curriculum, covering the more traditional areas of history, geography and science with plenty of cross-curricular art, design and technology and ICT thrown in for good measure. Topics studied as part of this skills-based curriculum are exciting and engaging. The year starts by looking at global environmental issues through a study of deforestation. From the classrooms turning into rainforests, via a devastating overnight deforestation, the unit ends with a campaign march to save the rainforests. At the end of the year, attention is turned to What’s on the Menu? We take the exploration of where our food comes from very seriously and our twonight residential camping trip takes place at a farm in rural Essex in order to maximise our

learning in this area! Pupils receive weekly specialist taught lessons in modern foreign languages, art, design and technology, music, ICT, PE, Games and Swimming. By the end of the Prep School experience, pupils will have had experience learning French, German and Spanish which helps their choice of two of these when they transition to the Senior School at 11+.

EVERAL THOUSAND people each year attend the Christmas memorial service at Bermondsey funeral director’s Albin’s - and this year’s will be taking place next Wednesday, December 5th.

The service gives locals a chance to remember lost loved ones as the festive period approaches.

The service includes carol singing, video displays of Albin’s work in Afghanistan and elsewhere overseas, the release of doves, a fireworks display and prayer. As always Simon and Jon Dyer alongside their staff invite all those who attend to stay for mince pies, soup and mulled wine.

This is the 19th annual memorial service, which was established by the late Barry Albin-Dyer after getting the garden built in 1999.

Jon Dyer told the News: “The memorial garden meant so much to our dad. It means as much to us and always will. It is a place for people to come together and remember those they have lost at Christmas, which is a time for the family.”

We wanna tell you a story about Max - the boy who became a star

Entertainer Max Bygraves has been nominated for a Southwark Blue Plaque

FROM A crowded two-room council flat in Rotherhithe to one of Britain’s most cherished performers, Max Bygrave’s life was nothing short of extraordinary, writes Christopher Carey...

He was born Walter William Bygraves on October 16 1922, so close to the Bow Bells his mother says she covered his ears as a baby to soften the chimes.

The early years of his life were quite humble, and the family often struggled to make ends meet.

His father was a professional flyweight boxer, fighting under the name ‘Battling Tom Smith’, and also worked as a casual docker.

As a boy Bygraves saw Max Miller and Billy Bennett at the New Cross Empire and at 12 entered a talent competition singing "It's My Mother's Birthday Today".

He later recalled, "I won easily. It's not hard to win when you are a boy soprano singing a sentimental song in tattered clothes with a half-starved dog."

On leaving school at 14, he worked as a messenger for an advertising agency in Fleet Street, and later became a fitter in the Royal Air Force in the Second World War. During this time he would also hone his trade as an entertainer, and was given the nickname Max by fellow troops - after an impersonation of comedian Max Miller on his first night of service.

His singing and dancing act made him very popular, and it was during this time that he first met his wife, Blossom.

His career started to take off just after the war, when he appeared on stage with Frankie Howerd, Benny Hill, Harry Secombe and Spike Milligan.

But it was radio that first saw him bring the music hall tradition to a wider audience when he appeared in, and wrote, Educating Archie with his friend Eric Sykes.

A show with Judy Garland at the London Palladium led to a five-month stint on Broadway. His fame grew and soon he was inviting audiences to "SingalongaMax", which they did through 30 gold discs and 20 royal variety shows.

His catchphrase ‘I wanna tell you a story’ became one of the best known one liners of a generation.

By the time he hosted the TV quiz show Family Fortunes in the 80s, his hits, including You Need Hands and Tulips from Amsterdam, and his ownership of the rights to Lionel Bart's musical Oliver!, had made him a

multimillionaire.

Bygraves retired to Australia in the 1990s, and published his autobiography, ‘Max Bygraves in His Own Words’, in 1997. He was coaxed out of retirement for a series of tours with the Beverly Sisters in 2002, then did a farewell set of performances in 2006.

He passed away August 31, 2012, aged 89, at his home in Queensland, Australia, after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Bygraves has been nominated for a Southwark Blue Plaque - a scheme created by Southwark Heritage Association, the News, and Southwark Council - by his son Anthony, who has fond memories of his late father’s wit.

“I appeared on stage with him when I was four, and he was surprised I knew all the words to one of his early singalongs ‘Gilly Gilly Ossen Feffer Katzen Nellan Bogan by the Sea.’ ‘’He looked at me and said ‘That was very good, you’re only four and you knew all those long words, I’m going to give you £5….if you can spell it’.’’

He also recalled a time when his father was teaching him stage craft and likened being a comedian to being a boxer, saying ‘you have to be on your toes, be ahead of the audience, remember your timing and when the moment is right...deliver that KO punchline.’

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under Section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, for the purposes specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

The purpose of the Order is to facilitate

Statutory consultation on the amendment of Published Admissions Numbers (PAN) for Southwark primary schools 2019/20 onwards

In accordance with the School Admissions (Admission Arrangements and Co-ordination of Admission Arrangements) (England) Regulations 2012, Southwark Council is consulting on a proposal to decrease the Published Admission Number (PAN)* of Reception classes at 13 primary schools for the academic year 2019/20 onwards. This proposal is an area wide undertaking by the council to right-size PANs due to falling rolls across the borough to balance the number of places available against the current level of demand.

School admissions and census data has confirmed that primary rolls, particularly in Reception, have been falling year on year in Southwark – a three year trend has been established. An over supply of places at a school can lead to financial and organisational inefficiency and can be challenging for individual schools to manage. The local authority and school leaders have worked together to consider options and take steps to address this. A review of the rolls of all primary schools in the borough has been undertaken, schools where rolls were falling and/or where spare capacity already existed due to schools not recruiting to their PANs over a 3 year period have been identified and put forward for reduction.

The aim of this proposal is to help stabilise each school’s intake and enable school leaders to plan and deliver school provision effectively and meet local demand. The reduction of the Reception PANs across Southwark will not lead to a shortage of school places in the borough - there are 695 spare reception places this year and the proposal has the potential to reduce this by 315 places. There are a sufficient number of places available at other primary schools in the borough to accommodate Reception and in-year demand at current levels. A reduction in PAN would apply to the Reception intake for each of the proposed schools from 2019 onwards, and not to children already in existing classes at the school.

There will be no costs to schools with regards to the proposed PAN reduction; there will be a small administrative cost to the local authority. Long term value for money will be achieved by ensuring that schools are the right size to reflect local demand. Southwark council will continue to monitor the demand for school places across the borough and act accordingly to re-provide places should the situation change and additional places be required.

Proposed reductions to individual primary school’s PANs are outlined below (all other primary school’s PANs will remain as already published for 2019/20):

PECKHAM TOWN conceded an early goal before scoring nine without reply including four from Klajdi Cani to defeat Crockenhill at the Menace Arena last Saturday.

The Menace have overcome the disappointment of being defeated 2-0 at New Romney two weeks ago to hit some sparkling form in their last two league games, and Saturday’s win was their most impressive yet.

Former Dulwich Hamlet academy striker Cani continued his scintillating run, unerring in front of goal against overwhelmed opponents and running their defence ragged to create space for team-mates.

After the visitors had taken the lead, Cani’s first goal and full-back Hady Traore’s strike put Peckham ahead at the break.

In the second half, Crockenhill paid for poor discipline as three of their players were sent to the sin bin for dissent, under the new rules being trialled at this level this season.

With their numerical advantage, Peckham began to dominate the game with their attacking brand of football.

Cani slotted under the visiting goalkeeper to grab his second before his striker partner Herve Mbongue headed home an excellent Kevin Dance cross. Winger Nicky Meta then got involved in the scoring before a quick-fire double from Cani including a spectacular turn and finish into the top right corner.

Two goals from substitute Yaya Barry completed the rout.

Manager Alan Jacobs said: “We demand a style that is simple and easy on the eye for the fans.

However, it certainly wasn't the best way of starting the game to go behind within three minutes.

“The players are all aware of their roles within the team and they showed real patience and quality on the ball all over the park.”

Head coach Mary Phillip added: “Some of our football out there was different class. [Crockenhill] are a threat going forward and have experience in their ranks, but we seem to have produced another couple of razor sharp strikers with Klajdi Cani taking his tally to twelve goals in four games with another four quality goals.”

DULWICH HAMLET are giving fans a triple treat at Christmas as they officially announced their Champion Hill return.

Almost ten months after they were turfed out of their home since 1912, Hamlet will play their first league game back in East Dulwich on Boxing Day against Eastbourne Borough.

That will be followed by fixtures against Slough Town three days later, before the visit of Bath City on January 5.

Hamlet’s last game at Imperial Fields in Mitcham will be this Saturday.

FISHER EXTENDED their winning run in all competitions to five games as they cruised through the second round of the Kent Senior Trophy last weekend.

It was the second time this season that Fisher had scored four goals against SCEFL Premier Division rivals K Sports.

An own goal put Dean Harrison’s side 1-0 up at the break at St Paul’s in Rotherhithe.

But Fisher stepped up the tempo in the second half and Trey Small fired in to double their lead.

Richie Hamill went close to a third from a free-kick, but the tie was then effectively ended as a contest when Chandler Kasai added a third for the hosts.

And Fisher completed the rout in the fourth minute of injury-time when substitute Rob Brown finished off a well-worked corner routine.

The result put Fisher through to the quarter-finals, which will be played in January.

Harrison’s side are back in league action on Saturday when they travel to Lordswood for a 3pm kick-off.

Fisher are top of the league, with 37 points from seventeen games, already close to the target Harrison thinks will guarantee survival.

After their excellent start to the season there could now be higher ambitions, but Harrison isn’t getting carried away.

Lionesses no match for United

MILLWALL LIONESSES suffered their third 8-0 defeat in the Women's Championship this season as Manchester United Women showed no mercy at Leigh Sports Village last weekend.

United maintained their unbeaten start to the season as the Lionesses remain bottom of the table. The hosts scored four in each half including a hat-trick from Mollie Green.

Lionesses goalkeeper Chloe Sansom prevented her side going behind when she saved from Jess Sigworth in the third minute before Kirsty Hanson rattled the woodwork nine minutes later.

United went in front in the sixteenth minute through Lauren James, before Green doubled the advantage with a volley half an hour in.

Katie Zelem got the third with a brilliant free-kick and Green completed the first-half scoring when she cut in from the left to fire last Sansom.

Green needed just five minutes after the break to complete her hattrick with a low effort, and Ella Toone made it 6-0 in the 60th minute with an excellent curled effort around Sansom.

Sigsworth finally got her name on the scoresheet before a penalty ten minutes from time from Lizze Arnot completed the rout.

Chris Phillips’ side are back in action at Dartford on Sunday when they host Sheffield United. Kick-off is 2pm.

Message from Millwall’s Fan on the Board...

Each month, EXCLUSIVELY in Southwark News, Micky Simpson provides an update on the news from the club concerning supporters

I WANTED to use my column this month to detail how much money Millwall fans have raised for charity this year.

Jamie Pearce raised over £1,700 for little West Ham fan Isla Caton.

Tony Munday raised a fraction under £30,000, again for Isla Nick Hart also raised £2,570 through a sponsored walk for Isla plus another £330 through sales of the CBL Yearbook.

Lee Dolby raised £3,000.

Millwall Fans raised over £10,000 for the London Ambulance Service after a local ambulance was smashed up.

I’ve helped raised well over £3,000 for Bermondsey boxer Charlie Wynn though a charity walk.

House of Fun (HoF) has raised tens of thousands over the years but this latest appeal was a great one as it was for a special bench in memory of fallen soldier and Millwall fan Lee O’Callaghan. Massive thanks to Millwall sponsor Huski Hot Chocolate (www.huskichocolate.com) who has now paid for the bench in full, meaning the £2,000 raised is going to other good causes. Well done to (HoF users) Drex and BMC for doing all the great work for good local causes.

Another Millwall fan who works tirelessly for those causes and has raised tens of thousands for local charities is Ayse Smith. Please also remember that from now until January she is collecting sleeping bags and gloves, hats, etc. for homeless exarmed forces.

fans who travelled to watch their side defeat Leeds United at Elland Road back in January last season were, because of breach of regulation regarding pricing, due a part refund.

But rather than pocket the money they were owed themselves, Millwall fans came together and decided to put their refunds towards different charity initiatives, including the fundraising drive for young Isla, who is suffering with neuroblastoma, a rare form of

Millwall fan David Elson started running this season doing smaller events and then on November 4 ran the New York City Marathon for Macmillan Cancer Support. Debrah stars as youngsters get back to winning ways

KEVIN NUGENT said Millwall have “some very good young players” after his under-23 side defeated Ipswich in the Professional Development League at the training ground on Monday.

The Lions defeated the leaders of the South division through goals after half-time from Jesse Debrah and Isaac Olaofe at Calmont Road.

It was Millwall’s first win in five games and saw them go fourth, seven points off the Tractor Boys.

"The lads absolutely rose to it," Nugent said to the club’s media. "I thought there were some fine individual performances, and collectively as well it all came together.

"We've had a couple of disappointing games recently, but you get that sometimes with the young lads and they're learning about getting that consistency, and competing early on,

which is what they did."

"Everything is a challenge for these lads. We're always looking to see how they cope with different scenarios, and [Monday] they played against a top side with some very good players.

"We have some very good young players here. One of the big things we look to do is nail down the basics.

"It's great for Jesse that he scored, but more important to him as a defender is that we kept the clean sheet and he worked very well.

"When the lads have the consistency and the basics, they always have half a chance."

George Alexander – son of ex-Lions striker Gary – and another under-18, Besart Topalloj, were also involved.

Nugent said: “The younger boys have done very well. George played 90 minutes on Saturday and then again here, and young Bes has come in and performed. He's a very versatile player.

“They have a bit of physical development still to come, but they do the basics well and have impressed

Debrah added: “We're proud of the clean sheet, we always take pride in defending well. People think clean sheets are just an achievement for defenders, but it's not, it's the whole

FORMER MILLWALL manager Mick McCarthy took charge of the Republic of Ireland this week – and Neil Harris thinks that could be good news for Aiden O’Brien and Shaun Williams.

McCarthy, 59, returns for a second spell in the role, after leaving Millwall to take over from Jack Charlton in 1996 and qualifying for the 2002 World Cup. The former Ireland international replaced Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane, who were informed after the 00 draw in Denmark last weekend as they finished bottom of their secondtier Nations League group that they were being discharged early from their contracts.

McCarthy was instantly the favourite for the post, though there was also support for Stephen Kenny, boss of League of Ireland side Dundalk.

The appointment of a new manager will leave some of the squad wondering if and where they fit into his plans, but McCarthy’s Millwall connections should ensure he will be keeping an eye on the Lions’ duo.

Poland, after Williams, from Dublin, had netted on his competitive international debut in a 4-1 Nations League defeat to Wales.

However, Williams was was an unused substitute in the next three competitive games when O'Neill bizarrely picked Fulham full-back Cyrus Christie in midfield, where he hadn't played since he was fourteen years old.

This paper asked Williams about that, but he preferred not to comment, perhaps understandably as, at 32, he may have felt he didn't have many more chances to be involved with the squad.

JORDAN ARCHER reminded everyone of his talent as Millwall came from behind to draw with Bolton last Saturday.

His saves from Will Buckley, a oneon-one, before he got back on his line and then showed cat-like reflexes to tip Jason Lowe’s close-range effort onto the bar were Premier League quality.

Early in the second half he saved again from Lowe to prevent the contest becoming unsalvageable for the hosts.

That’s also the frustration with Archer, though, that he can be this good but then also make rudimentary errors, something which spoiled his season in 2017-18.

to make you think he could still have a career in the top flight. He doesn’t lack in confidence, and as well as those saves he came confidently to collect crosses.

When Neil Harris publicly criticised his attitude in August, it looked, at least from the outside, like that could have been it for Archer’s Lions career just over three years after he joined from Tottenham.

But Harris knows his players and what is likely to elicit the right response from them, and by all accounts Archer has been excellent in training and his attitude spot on.

He still looks like the future if Harris is to keep building towards making Millwall an established Championship side and perhaps one that can regularly challenge or even break into the top six.

On pure talent, there are not many better in the division, but too often there have been lapses in concentration. Any longer than the fraction of a second it requires to make an instinctive stop

then Archer tends to be vulnerable to making a mistake. He is at his best when he doesn’t have too much time to think. Too many saveable shots flew past him last season and it’s up to the

sensible appointment with a long-term view of some good Irish coaches coming through.

"Mick is an old hand, so to speak, with an understanding of international football. He’s very popular among players who have played for him, and maybe it’s at a time when Ireland need to get back on track and need stability.

He will give them that.

"I’ve seen the plan for the FAI to think about bringing through a younger coach, with Kenny going in with the under-21s. I’m sure he’ll work very closely with Mick over the next couple of years and he’ll try to gather all the information and knowledge Mick has.

"I think my players will enjoy going away and working under Mick. I’d say it’s a good appointment for Aiden and Shaun."

‘I don’t want to forget people who give me opportunities’ EXCLUSIVE

JED WALLACE wasn’t going to forget what Millwall had done for his career during contract negotiations, saying Neil Harris took him out of a “freezer” at Wolves to give him his chance.

Wallace signed a new long-term deal last week after leaving talks about his future to the club and his representatives.

Wallace’s book value shot up at the end of August when Middlesbrough submitted a mutli-million pound offer for him that was rejected.

Tony Pulis’ Boro were strong favourites for promotion and have strengthened their bid to return to the Premier League with their results in the Championship so far this season.

Wallace, 24, is ambitious and wants to play in the top flight, something that would be more likely to be fulfilled at a club such as Boro.

Former Portsmouth winger Wallace watched his friend and team-mate George Saville move to the north-east club, but he never had any doubt that he would stay with the Lions.

“I want to play in the Premier League, 100 per cent, my ambition is to get there, whether that’s with Millwall or without Millwall,” Wallace said. “Right now the best thing for my career is playing every week in the Championship and showing people what I’m capable of doing.

“Ultimately they didn’t want to sell me.

It doesn’t matter if someone bids £100million, if the club doesn’t want to sell they won’t sell. They made it clear they wanted me to be here and it’s nice to feel wanted.

“I’ve been brought up in a way that I don’t want to forget people who give me opportunities. Neil Harris didn’t have to call me and take me out of the freezer at Wolves and bring me here and give me all the chances to play well. I wasn’t just going to forget that overnight.

“The club have shown a lot of faith in me and the manager has shown a lot of faith in me and if I have the chance to repay it that’s what I’m going to do.

Hopefully I can carry on doing that.

“The club wanted to make sure I was settled and the manager has said that it’s my tendency if I’m trying too hard or unsettled then I don’t play well.

“I play my best football when I’m

settled. There was a point when I did say to my agent and manager I just want to get back to playing well. I had a slow start to the season but since I missed the Forest game I feel I’ve been playing well.”

Millwall find themselves at the wrong end of the table heading into December, a period that proved crucial last season when three wins and two draws in six games gave them the belief that there could be more in the campaign than just finishing above the relegation places.

The Lions are looking for a first away win this season at Bristol City on Sunday, after blowing a two goal lead in injury-time the last time on their travels at Norwich before the international break.

“We’re very, very tight-knit as a group and that hasn’t changed,” Wallace continued. “We know we’re just that

little bit short at the moment. As a group we need to show responsibility and be a bit braver, really.

“I can’t tell you how much in the Norwich game we were communicating, trying our utmost but sometimes it goes against you. Last season when we were winning we felt like we were never going to lose. At the moment we just can’t quite get over the line, those final little details. But in my opinion we’ve played against a lot of teams that we’ll finish above this season.

“The fans need to stick with us as we stick with them. We’re all in it together.

We love playing for Millwall as a group and we’ll get the results we want.

“We just need to keep having faith in each other. We saw last season if you get a few wins in a row everything can change. A week in football is a very long time.

“We’ll be fine. There’s no panic in me at all. The reality is if you look at it game by game we battered pretty much everyone bar Sheffield United at The Den this season. Through the fault of our own we have thrown away games. In spells we have been unplayable but it’s just about getting over the line.

“Every fan wants their club to win every week but that’s why we love football, because it’s so unpredictable.”

Wallace speaks freely and honestly with the press, wearing – as he has said about the way he performs on the pitch – his heart on his sleeve in getting his views across.

And he doesn’t hold back in the dressing room.

“We know as a group that it ain’t been good enough,” he said. “There have been some strong words said. I’d always be one to speak up. The reason

sometimes I have bad games is because I’m trying stuff.

“I was playing every week at Portsmouth as an eighteen-, nineteenyear-old when they were going through administration. I was one of the main players and had that pressure on me.

That’s fine, pressure is something I enjoy.

I’m always happy to take the ball and be the one to lose it, and if I lose it I’ll try again, try again. I’ll always be happy to take the risk. I’ll always be the one to speak up.

“But, the people that we need to listen to are the manager and Moro [Steve Morison], and Shaun Williams and Byron Webster that know a lot more about football than I do.

“Over the years there have been some bad teams at Millwall and we ain’t one of them. We’ve had a very, very successful group over the last four years and that ain’t going to change overnight. We will start climbing the table very soon.

“This is a top-half Championship club now, in my opinion. We’re always going to be adding players and if you’re not playing well you’re going to be replaced, that’s the reality of football.

“There’s not much loyalty in football now, so it’s nice that the club have shown loyalty to me and I was able to return the favour. The club needs to push in the right direction. We’ve got good players in every position and I can’t stress enough that we’re doing everything we can.

“It’s the same old cliché, we’re working hard. But we are working hard, it means a lot to the players. You can see that when we’ve lost games, we care.

“We’re all pushing in the right direction for this football club.”

MONEY IS available for Neil Harris to spend on his squad in January, Millwall CEO Steve Kavanagh says.

But, despite their Championship status boosting income and the sale of George Saville netting £8million, chairman John Berylson is still funding the club.

The Saville fee will be received in instalments, and Kavanagh revealed Berylson has already put money into Millwall this season.

Harris has been hit with a number of injuries recently, most seriously when Tom Bradshaw was ruled out for the season with knee ligament damage that required surgery and now a long period of rehabilitation.

Last weekend, the options available to Harris – who prefers to operate with one of the smallest first-team squads in the division – were laid further bare when Steve Morison was absent against Bolton and then Tom Elliott went off injured during the game.

That left the Lions with just one outand-out striker, Lee Gregory, with Aiden O’Brien, who has played the majority of games in his Millwall career on the left of midfield, pushed into a forward position.

Millwall have a transfer budget for January, but Kavanagh stressed that doesn’t necessarily mean they will spend all of it.

“The situation differs from club to club and the different financial situations,” Kavanagh said. “That [Saville sale] was a windfall but don’t forget we’ve already beaten our transfer record twice in the summer with Ryan Leonard and Tom Bradshaw.

Unfortunately Tom’s already picked up an injury, which happens.

“John has invested a lot of money and we will do what is right for Millwall football club, not because there’s 50p left in the George Saville tin.

“With the George Saville money, transfer fees of that nature are not all paid up front, they are spread over a period of time.

“And absolutely, especially with the transfers we’ve made, John needs to and has already put money in this season and continues to fund the football club. We are eternally grateful for that support.

No, but if the right player is available, and the chairman supports that position, then that will be the case.

“It’s not necessarily about we’ve got a budget of £1 and we’ve only spent 50p.

“January is always a difficult window but if the right player becomes available that will help take the squad forward and develop the team then I’m sure the board and the chairman will back that.”

of the team. He knows as a young man that his bread and butter, his learning curve at the moment, is playing as many games as he can as quickly as possible.

“He’s had the opportunity here under me to do that ever since he has been here on loan and permanently. Jed knows we’re a good fit for him and the way he wants to play.

“Jed wants freedom to express himself but he also needs a structure to work off because he is 100 miles an hour and will run all over the place given half a chance.

“He needs telling, he needs showing, but he wants to work hard. I’ve got a very good working relationship with Jed. “It’s a sign of intent from the club that, even though we’re not in a fantastic league position at the moment, there is the potential to grow and be better.

“Jed has belief in the group and we have shown enough last year and this season that we’re a better team than our league position shows at the moment.

And Jed Wallace’s performances make us a better team.”

JED WALLACE has admitted he was “amazed” that his commitment to Millwall was questioned after the club turned down a bid for him from Middlesbrough in August.

Speaking to the News this week, Wallace hoped to “put the record straight” as he said: “I love playing for this club.”

Wallace, 24, confirmed his commitment to Millwall last week when he signed a new long-term contract.

Wallace felt that after the club knocked back Boro’s attempts to sign him, some people put “two and two together” following a dip in form.

“I’ve got a great relationship with the manager,” Wallace said. “When I was at Wolves, for example, you don’t really speak to anyone, you just get told [about a bid]. I was in with the manager here, speaking with the manager, and for all the fans knew I might have been in there saying I didn’t want to leave. No one knows that, but then I have two or three bad games and people are questioning my commitment to the club, which, to be honest, surprised me after the fact that I have joined this club three times.

“People start questioning my

commitment, which amazed me, but I think now this will put the record straight. I don’t know if people put two and two together but I’ve never once said to anyone anywhere that I wanted to leave. I’ve always maintained that I love playing for this club, and that’s it.

“I feel like I have put the record straight now.”

Millwall’s current policy is not to disclose the length of player contracts, but the new deal will run beyond the summer of 2020 when his previous agreement was due to end. The club will also have an option to extend his current contract.

A host of Millwall players are in the last or second-last year of their current deals – including those with options – with the futures of the likes of Lee Gregory, Shane Ferguson and Jordan Archer still uncertain.

Lions captain Steve Morison will also be seeking a further twelve months to take his playing career with the club beyond his 36th birthday.

Millwall secured Jed Wallace on a longer deal last week, and Harris hopes that’s one of the first pieces of the long-term jigsaw coming together.

“Talks go on all the time with players and the board,” Harris said. “I try to focus on coaching Shane Ferguson and managing the players, as well as supporting the players when need be.

“Talks are ongoing with various lads and that will continue. But, as ever, as we know these things are never quick and straightforward.

We need to be patient.

“That’s the message at the moment: to be patient and keep trying to win games of football.

“There is potential to improve on the last few seasons and Jed recognised that. It’s the first part of trying to tie players down to longer contracts, young and older players.”
