RIO FERDINAND made a surprise appearance at his old school in Peckham to give pupils a lesson on poetry.

The Premier League football hero and TV presenter gave Camelot Primary School pupils a lesson on this year’s Premier League Writing Stars competition, themed around ‘diversity.

The competition, open to all primary pupils in England and Wales, aims to help get young people into writing poetry.

Ferdinand will help judge the final winners, alongside musician Olly Murs and children’s laureate Lauren Child.

Last year’s inaugural event saw more than 25,000 primary-age pupils join in with their poetic offerings – and any style goes, with rap and music lyrics also allowed.

Ferdinand told the class all about his time growing up in Peckham, before pupils shared their poems on respect, tolerance, and how diversity should be celebrated.

Ferdinand said: “It was great to be back at my old primary school for Premier League Writing Stars.

“I hope that by sharing my experiences with the children today it can have a positive impact on helping them to understand the importance of diversity and that although we are all different, we are very much the same.”

The competition, open to all

A NEW girls’ football team has launched in Peckham and is looking for new members.

Girls United Football Association trains on Saturday mornings from 9.30-12.30 in Peckham Rye Park, and is keen for girls aged six to eighteen years of all abilities to join the new team.

Its organisers - who also run a team in Mexico - say they plan to hold a training camp in February half-term, and a tournament next summer to coincide with the Women’s

A SIX-YEAR-OLD Millwall fan’s dream to have “legs like her friends” is well on its way to becoming reality, following successful surgery partly-funded by Lions supporters.

Ellice Barr was just 22-months-old when she was diagnosed with diplegic cerebral palsy.

Her family started a £65,000 fundraiser last year for little Ellice to have a selective dorsal rhizotomy operation – which is not funded by the NHS - to reduce the spasticity in her legs.

The successful operation in July means the footie fan is now experiencing a number of firsts, including standing on the flats of her

feet for the first time.

Eventually her parents say that she will be able to walk as well as anyone else – and finally achieve her wish of being able to run, jump and climb with her friends.

Dad Joe Barr, 38, told the News: “The surgery was a huge success – her development is exactly in line with what we expected at this stage.

“It’s still going to take a couple of years before she’s out and about.

“She’s done so many firsts, standing there with her feet flat – that was mindblowing.

“It’s a massive marker in her progress.”

Ellice will be having more surgery in the new year to lengthen her calves, putting her feet at a 90 degree angle, putting her on course to walk as well as someone without cerebral palsy.

Joe, who lives in Deal, Kent, with the rest of the family including mum Amy and son Jay, explained: “When I was at Great Ormond Street Hospital they said her future will be walking unaided with just an inset in her shoe.

“And it’s the fundraising and donations that’s helped our daughter have a future walking unaided.

“We can’t describe how elated we are.”

The Millwall season ticket holder paid tribute to the fans who helped fundraise

for Ellice’s operation, saying it couldn’t have been possible without them.

“The support from the London area, particularly Millwall fans has been absolutely amazing”, he said.

“The support she’s received has been massive.

“That part of London has always supported my little girl so we’re well chuffed.”

There’s no chance of little Ellice changing her football allegiances any time soon, either.

Dad Joe was telling the News how the six-year-old was as “mad keen” for football as she’s ever been – when she interjected and said: “Jed Wallace is my hero!”

The midfielder has formed a close bond with the little girl after reading about her plight on Twitter, and has previously taken the family on a tour of The Den. The family said they are going to be at the next Millwall home game on Saturday November 24 – and urged fans who helped fundraise to say hello, so they can express their thanks.

“If anyone sees us and they want to have a word, please do stop us and say hi!” said Joe. “That way we can say thank-you.”

PATIENTS RECEIVING intensive psychiatric care in South London and Maudsley NHS Trust’s ‘inadequate’ acute care wards were restrained and tranquilised by staff, who failed to carry out necessary health and safety checks, its inspection report claims.

As the News reported last week, although the NHS Trust achieved a ‘good’ rating overall, its acute wards were deemed ‘inadequate’.

The latest report from the Care Quality Commission, or CQC, said the trust had failed to improve certain wards inspected last year.

It catalogued ‘breaches of fundamental standards of care on the acute wards’ which it claimed ‘had not been appropriately escalated to senior leaders in the trust’.

Shockingly, out of 32 recorded cases of patients being physically restrained, not one included details of the types of holds used by staff, or which staff members were involved.

The report paints a picture of staff struggling with high demand and limited resources. Last year, a total of 31 patients were left sleeping on sofas or on temporary facilities.

Empty posts and high turnover have left remaining staff struggling. Seven vacancies were listed on one ward alone, while on another staff turnover was higher than 25 per cent.

South London and Maudsley NHS Trust provides mental health services to 1.3 million people across Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham and Croydon.

More than 1,200 nurses are employed among its 5,000-strong staff.

The trust was rated ‘good’ overall, with the ‘kindness and compassion’ of staff particularly praised. Its eating disorders service and community-based work was also praised.

In a statement published on October 23, Chief Executive Dr Matthew Patrick said: “An overall Good rating reflects the care and compassion of our staff who do their best every day, often in difficult circumstances, to improve the mental health of our service users.

“Quality is our number one priority and we are working constantly to improve our care. We regard the CQC’s findings as a further opportunity to make positive change and we have submitted comprehensive improvement plans to them regarding the action we are taking as a result of this report.”

Protestors stage traffic stand-offs PROTESTORS BROUGHT rushhour traffic around Elephant and Castle to a standstill on Wednesday morning in a follow-on from demonstrations over the weekend, writes Josh Salisbury...

Activists from Extinction Rebellion stood in a line at the junction refusing to let cars past in a protest against climate change.

However, protestors apologised for the inconvenience, holding up signs saying: “Sorry! We won’t be long.”

The group is demanding legally binding policies to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 alongside a national ‘Citizens’ Assembly’ to oversee the radical green changes.

Activists were also reported to have blocked traffic over the Lambeth and Vauxhall bridges, alongside other action at Tower Bridge and Earl’s Court. The direct action divided motorists with one tweeting: “To the climate change protesters who blocked South London this morning and left me sitting in a traffic jam en route to the Elephant and Castle and not moving for 30 minutes - up yours. That is all.”

The action comes on the back of protests by the climate change activists on Saturday, which saw many of London’s major bridges blockaded. Eighty-two people were arrested on Saturday, said police, after the group occupied Southwark, Blackfriars, Waterloo, Westminster and Lambeth

bridges.

Met spokesman Supt Waheed Khan said of Saturday’s protest: “The demonstration is having a direct impact on others across London who wish to go about their daily business – and the emergency services from using the bridges to travel around London.

Given that the organisers failed to engage with police prior to the event, we were unable to work with them around their plan and to make considerations for other Londoners.”

All were released later that day under investigation.

King’s could ‘refuse to treat’ after high levels of abuse

STAFF AT King’s College NHS Trust – the body that manages King’s College Hospital among others – are more likely to be abused or harassed by the public than average, according to new statistics.

Findings from the latest annual NHS Staff Survey show that 36% of staff members said they had experienced “harassment, bullying or abuse from patients, relatives or the public” in the last twelve months.

On average, 28% of staff at other acute NHS trusts across the country said they have experienced bullying, harassment or abuse from patients, relatives or the public.

The stat puts King’s College Trust in the worst performing fifth of all the acute Trusts in the country for staff being abused by the public.

In response to the survey’s findings, the Trust has launched an anti-bullying campaign, ‘Not a Target’, which starkly warns that being abusive may result in prosecution or refusal of treatment.

A Trust spokesperson told the News: “We take accusations of bullying or harassment very seriously. In response to our 2017/18 staff survey results we launched a campaign to help tackle abuse from patients and the public.

“The campaign makes it clear that verbal or physical abuse may result in refusal of treatment or prosecution.

“Bullying, abuse or harassment by staff towards colleagues is unacceptable and is treated as a disciplinary offence.

“There are a number of channels available for staff to report allegations and support is available via a confidential helpline.”

The Trust’s campaign comes as the Health and Social Care Secretary, Matt Hancock, announced a crackdown on violence targeting NHS staff.

The new ‘Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Act’ has also recently passed into law, doubling the maximum sentence for assaulting an emergency worker from six months to a year.

Speaking to the Royal College of Nursing last month, Mr Hancock said: “NHS staff dedicate their lives to protecting and caring for us in our times of greatest need and for any one of them to be subject to aggression or violence is completely unacceptable.”

Sarah Gorton, of the staff union UNISON, added: “No one should be abused, threatened or attacked at work ‒ especially when all they’re trying to do is help people.”

Disabled landlord and family of the historic China Hall are ‘told to leave’ although developer ‘will keep pub’ EXCLUSIVE

THE LANDLORDS of a historic Rotherhithe pub have to be out of the building by Christmas Eve despite a campaign launched last year to keep them open.

The China Hall, on Lower Road, had been involved in a long-running battle to stay open after the freehold of the building was sold by the Punch Tavern to the developers, Hamna Wakaf.

Landlords Michael and Linda Norris say they now must leave both their business and home during the Christmas period – and they’re going to be out of work because of it.

Linda, 58, told the News: “My husband had to have his leg amputated earlier this year and we just couldn’t keep fighting it.

“They [the developers] are keeping it

as a pub but I don’t know what else they’re doing.

“We did ask for a couple of weeks’ extension but they haven’t agreed to it.

“We’re going to be out of work because of it.”

The News could not find contact details for Hamna Wakaf Ltd, based in the Isle of Man, to ask them for comment.

Husband Michael is most affected, said Linda.

“He’s pretty gutted really. He’s lost his leg and he’s turned 70 anyway,” she said.

“He won’t be able to find work and he’s never been one for sitting indoors.

He’s more upset than all of us.”

Regulars at the pub have rallied around the couple, who have been the landlords for over 35 years.

Among them are In2Touch, a touch Rugby league based in Surrey Quays who regularly go to the historic boozer for drinks after games.

Gareth McCrae, said: “We always go back to the China Hall after league games, we have been for over a decade.

“It’s a bit devastating really.”

The group has organised a ‘Farewell to the China Hall’ event on Wednesday November 21 to thank the staff and Michael and Linda for “everything they’ve done for us.”

The south-east London branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has also said it had organised a ‘farewell protest’ over the closure.

Steve Silcock, the group’s chair, told the News: “This is the latest in a string of examples that show that even popular and successful pubs can come under threat.

“As this case demonstrates, when offshore property developers buy pubs it is not because they love a pint but because they eye a redevelopment opportunity.”

The CAMRA group had previously successfully campaigned for the pub to become an “asset of community value”

The status means the publicans must be given the opportunity to buy the freehold of the pub if it comes up for sale.

Mr and Mrs Norris have previously told the News that the developer offered them a 10-year lease for £75,000 a year but it was unaffordable, being double the amount they were paying before.

Mr Silcock added: “Whilst the pub will be closing next month it does not mean all is lost.

“Our CAMRA branch fought hard to get the China Hall listed as a community asset and finally succeeded at the third attempt. We will be looking to Southwark Council to ensure this is given due weight when assessing any future planning application.”

CAMRA’s protest starts at 2pm on Saturday December 8, and the local community are invited, said Mr Silcock.

A pub has been on the site of The China Hall for nearly 300 years and has previously been used as a theatre venue.

Two charged in Rocky case

A MAN was charged with murdering Rocky Djelal on Saturday.

The 38-year-old was fatally stabbed to death in Southwark Park on October 31 next to a children’s play area.

Stephen O’Rourke, 46, of Grosvenor Park, Kennington was charged with murder, police said.

Jason O’Rourke, 34, of Foundry Close, Rotherhithe, was charged with assisting an offender.

Both men were remanded in custody.

They appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Monday, November 19, and were due to appear at the Old Bailey on Wednesday November 21 as the News was going to press.

POLICE HAVE reissued an appeal with a reward for witnesses to an aggravated burglary in Bermondsey, where three masked men burst into a family home armed with a machine gun, rifle and machete.

The family-of-six were watching television at their home in Grange Road on Saturday June 9, when the armed intruders came in through the open patio doors, threatening to shoot the children and elderly relatives .

The criminals demanded money and access to the safe in the shocking incident, which took place shortly after midnight – but eventually fled emptyhanded.

Now Crimestoppers, the anonymous crime reporting charity, has offered up to £1,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the thugs behind the terrifying ordeal, which has left the family traumatised.

Dave Reed from the Met's Flying Squad said: "These three men entered this family's home armed with an array of weapons, striking terror into the whole family. Two children were present at the time, and they have understandably been left traumatised by this incident.”

DC Reed said police were unaware of any prior motive and appealed for the public’s help in catching the criminals.

He said: “If you have any information about this incident, no matter how insignificant you think it may be, please contact police. You will be treated in the

£20,000 to find graveyard killers

A £20,000 reward is being offered in a police re-appeal for information about the murder of Mohamed Kakay, who was stabbed to death in Camberwell two years ago.

On Saturday detectives returned to Camberwell Church Street, where Mohamed was killed, to hand out appeal leaflets and talk to the community in a fresh bid to find his killers.

The 33-year-old was stabbed inside the gardens at the back of St Giles' Church, before staggering to the front of the church and collapsing in Camberwell Church Street around 9am on November 19 2016.

Members of the public stopped to administer first aid until the emergency services arrived and Mohamed was rushed to hospital.

He died of his injuries later that afternoon. Police believe that he was attacked by two suspects.

Six people have been previously arrested as part of the investigation, but all were released without further action.

Detective Inspector Tom Dahri, leading

the investigation, said: "Two years have passed, but we remain as committed as ever to finding out who committed this murder.

"We believe that Mohamed had spent the night at a flat in Wilson Road. In the morning he walked down Wilson Road with two suspects before he entered the gardens at the rear of St Giles’ Church, where he was stabbed seconds later.

"The two suspects then made off through the gardens, down a side alleyway leading to the front of St Giles’ Church and then cut through the front of the church as the congregation were exiting, before they turned back up Wilson Road.”

DI Dahri said that police believed the local community could help solve the case and hoped that the reward would encourage people to come forward.

He added: “We hope that by offering a substantial reward for information, anyone who knows something about what happened to Mohamed and those involved in his murder who previously thought twice about coming forward will do the right thing now and call police."

The third man is described as a light skinned black male, of slim build, 5ft 9 inches tall, wearing black clothes and a balaclava.

He was believed to have been armed with a machine gun.

Schoolboy is held up at knifepoint EXCLUSIVE

PRIMARIES IN Rotherhithe have warned parents to be extra careful about letting their children walk to school alone, after an eleven-year-old was robbed by a man wielding a knife in broad daylight.

The secondary school pupil was walking past the primary school when approached by the robber outside at around 8am on Thursday November 8.

The suspect asked the unnamed child for the time – before pulling out a knife and demanding he hand over his phone.

The knife-wielding thug ran off after stealing the phone and has not yet been traced.

The primary school, outside which the incident took place has since sent out a letter to parents and carers informing them of the robbery and asked parents to give signed notification if their child walks to school on their own.

Other nearby primaries are also understood to have sent out letters reassuring parents and carers.

The police told the News that despite officers’ efforts they were not able to find the robber.

A Met Police said police were called at around 8.13am but added: “The area was searched by officers but the phone wasn’t recovered.”

Police inquiries are still ongoing and no arrests have been made.

Long-lost family of Private Best contact News from USA after war grave revelation EXCLUSIVE

THE LONG-LOST family of Private William Thomas Best have been reunited after their ancestor who died fighting in the First World War appeared in last week’s Armistice special edition of the News.

After seeing a photograph of her late, distant cousin in an article online, Glenys Philyaw wrote in saying: “I was born and raised in East Dulwich, but moved to the US in 1984 to marry my American husband.

“I still visit London every year and very proud of my South London heritage.

“Thomas William Best is my second cousin, twice removed.

“His parents were Mary Ann Mann and Thomas Samuel Best.

“Thomas Samuel died when his son was two, and his mother remarried a John Roullier in 1887 when Thomas was around five.

“It is the Roullier family that I am passionate about - my grandmother Eliza Roullier was a great, great, granddaughter of the first Roullier to arrive in London from Paris in the late 1780's Jean Alphonse Ferdinand Roullier.

“Jean was a prolific writer, painter and teacher of languages. He operated a book shop in Soho in 1801.

“He had three books published (that I know of) one of which was titled 'The Primitives of the Greek Tongue, in Greek, Latin, English, Italian and French', published 1809.

“Unfortunately, his education and standard of living did not follow down the generations - his daughter spent time in a debtors prison and his son, John, my

great-great-great-grandfather, had fifteen children and was living in the slums of Peckham.

“The Roullier White shop on Lordship Lane is connected to this Roullier family.

Lawrence, the owner, who sadly passed away, was my third cousin.”

The News were more than happy to put her in touch with David Rodgers and his wife, so she can share her research into their shared family tree, with David describing the news as ‘fantastic’, and saying he couldn’t wait to tell the family.

According to Glenys’ research, Private Best is listed in the 1901 census as living on Honiton Street in Peckham, and later in Walworth’s Borrett Road in 1911.

He appears as a ‘paper hanger’, and then a ‘house decorator’ by trade. He died from pneumonia while being treated in hospital for gunshots to the face.

His widow, Ethel, received a war widow’s pension of 33 shillings and nine pence until her death in Peckham in 1975.

As we reported last week David Rodgers, from Sevenoaks, was dismayed to find a pile of rubbish was covering Private Best’s grave in Camberwell Old Cemetery when he went to pay their respects on the Friday before the centenary of the end of World War One. It emerged the rubble had been left on the graves of 48 war dead – including his wife’s great-grandfather’s - after being illegally dumped fifteen years earlier, though the council claims it will move it once and for all as part of its continuing redevelopment of the public cemetery.

After visiting the cemetery David, whose wife’s family hails from Peckham, told the News: “It seems while the rest of the world were commemorating the fallen, those in Camberwell Old Cemetery were left forgotten.”

the council and Commonwealth War Graves Commission had been in touch to offer their apologies and confirm no war graves had been ‘disturbed’ despite the rubble and redevelopment.

The Commission has assured David Rodgers and his wife the work to this area of the cemetery will be completed within a month, after which the area will be landscaped, terraced and grassed and no war graves will be disturbed throughout.

A spokesperson for the commission said they will be in touch with his family when the new headstone will be placed.

Latest war memorial to be unveiled LONDON’S NEWEST memorial will be unveiled at a special ceremony in Walworth Square, next Tuesday, November 27.

The memorial, designed by Scottish sculptor Kenny Hunter, was commissioned by Southwark Council with support from Lendlease and the Contemporary Arts Society.

The bronze artwork marks the centenary of the Armistice and the end of the First World War, and its dedication ceremony will complete the anniversary events that have been taking place across the borough.

able to express human endurance in traumatic circumstances.”

The memorial’s contemporary design depicts an anonymous figure of a youth standing on a giant, fallen ash tree. It bears the inscription “Against the armour of the storm I’ll hold my human barrier” – a line from a World War Two poem by Hamish Henderson.

The sculpture was commissioned to commemorate all the lives that have been affected by war and conflict around the globe, including the lives of members of the armed forces, civilians and refugees.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL is working with electric vehicle charging company char.gy, to install 50 public-use charging points for electric vehicles in lampposts in Borough & Bankside and Dulwich.

Char.gy specialises in supplying electric vehicle charging points in residential areas and will provide the technology behind the lampposts and manage the payment process.

Drivers of electric vehicles will be able to charge their cars at the high tech lampposts using the char.gy app which offers both monthly subscription services and a pay-asyou-go option.

Lamp post charging points offer advantages to other electric vehicle charging options.

The technology means that the charging points can be moved around based on demand, and because they

are connected to lampposts, do not require extra infrastructure.

Richard Stobart, CEO of char.gy said: “char.gy offers easy, affordable, open-access EV charging without the need to dig-up residential streets across Southwark to lay additional cables or add on-street electricity cabinets.”

The initiative received £300,000 in funding from City Hall’s Go Ultra Low City Scheme, which aims to improve air quality across the capital.

Cllr Julian Bell, Chair of London Councils’ Transport and Environment Committee and Chair of the GULCS steering group said: “I look forward to seeing more charging points installed across Southwark and other London boroughs as part of the Go Ultra Low City Scheme, which aims to encourage the switch to electric vehicles to help clean up London’s air.”

Residents were consulted before the project began, and Southwark Council plans to continue the roll out to other areas where residents have requested them.

BRITAIN’S BIGGEST electricity distributor, UK Power Networks, has become London's first utility network to put electric vehicles (EVs) on the capital’s roads.

Engineers made their first journey in the new EVs to Archbishop Sumner School in Kennington, one of the areas that will be covered by London's new 'Ultra Low Emission Zone'.

The initiative aims to tackle toxic air pollution and is due to be introduced in early 2019.

Eight-year-old Edward, a pupil at the school, said: “We sat inside the electric vans and met the engineers. I think electric cars are going to be extremely useful in the future. They don’t release any fossil fuels and keep our air clean.”

Headteacher Ursula Ovenden, said:

“We are very concerned about air quality, which seems to be affecting children’s health and we have more children now with asthma than we have ever had. We encourage children to cycle or walk to school to try to reduce the number of cars, but having more electric vehicles, like the ones UK Power Networks are introducing, should help reduce the pollution going into the air.”

Twenty-seven charge points are currently being installed at company offices and depots across London and Southern England.

‘The best council in the country for transport’

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL won the prestigious National Authority of the Year award for transport, last month.

The council was awarded for reaching its sustainable transport goals, despite facing cuts in funding and increasing costs.

Southwark was also recognised for its commitment to creating safer and easily accessible streets to support cyclists and pedestrians in a borough that enjoys the fourth lowest private vehicle ownership in London, with an average of only 19 owners per 100 of population.

member for Environment, Transport Management and Air Quality, said: “Our highways team works closely with communities across Southwark, making our roads safer, more attractive and open to a number of different users.

“It is wonderful to see them gain this esteemed recognition of their past successes and innovative future plans.“ Southwark Council and Transport for London are investing over £30 million in cycling over the five-year period to 2020, in order to meet the council’s target to more than double the level of cycling in the borough, over the next ten years.

This would add more than 40,000 additional trips by bike every day.

Southwark sits at the centre of

London’s transport network, with approximately 300,000 residents and over 50 million commuters passing through every year.

The council fought off tough competition from Waltham Forest, Aberdeenshire and Gateshead Councils to claim the award at the Westminster Park Plaza Hotel.

More than 600 transport professionals attended the event hosted by broadcaster and presenter, Jeremy Vine, and transport secretary, Chris Grayling.

Earlier this year, Southwark also won the Borough of the Year award at the London Transport Awards, a British Parking Award for its Kerbside strategy, and young transport professional awards.

A 55-year-old man has been charged with her murder

A MAN has been charged with murder following the death of an elderly woman in Peckham at the weekend.

Edward Watkins, 55, of Ethnard Road, SE15, was charged with murder on Sunday.

Police and the London Ambulance Service were called to an address on

Malcolm died in hospital on the afternoon of Friday, November 2, after being attacked on Balham Hill outside the underground station at around 4.30pm.

Detectives say the stabbing followed an ‘altercation’ minutes beforehand, involving two small groups of young males – and none are believed to have travelled on the tube.

A large number of people were at the scene and police continue to appeal for anyone in the area who saw something suspicious to get in touch.

Witnesses can call the Met’s incident room on 020 8721 4868 or to remain anonymous call Crimstoppers on 0800 555 111.

Ethnard Road, off the Old Kent Road on Friday evening at 4:04pm and found the pensioner suffering stab wounds.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, she died at the scene at 4:37pm.

Watkins appeared in custody at Camberwell Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Formal identification of the victim is yet to take place.

Next of kin have been informed.

HUT A LOAD OF READING! NUNHEAD

PUPILS AT Hollydale Primary School in Nunhead are making the most of a special new pop-up reading hut.

The school was one of five to receive a book hut from the London Children's Book Project.

After arriving in October, the hut will remain in place until the Christmas holidays, giving pupils the opportunity to read and take home new books and spend time reading during playtime and after school.

WITNESS APPEAL IN MALCOLM MURDER CASE

The hut is part of a scheme to give thousands of new and second-hand books to children across London.

One in four children growing up in the capital has fewer than ten books at home.

Research shows that children who grow up in 'book rich' homes are ten months ahead in their language skills than those growing up without.

Assistant head teacher Farhana Sultana said: "We are always looking for ways to promote reading and this has really created a buzz as the children are so thrilled that they get to keep the books forever."

Centre for afro-hairdressers and beauty salons to open PECKHAM

PECKHAM PALMS, the centre for afro-hairdressers and beauty salons, will open this month as its directors promise a ‘new approach to regeneration that does not support gentrification’.

The purpose-built Bournemouth Close site, which has signed a 20year lease with Southwark Council, will house specialist hairdressers, nail technicians, make-up artists and beauticians under one roof.

Its directors say it aims to be a ‘goto destination for anyone who wants to benefit from generations of talent in the art of braiding, weaving, corn rows, bantu knots, Afro puffs, sew ins, plaits and twists to name a few.’

Some of the hair stylists at Peckham Palms will be those relocated from Blenheim Grove as part of Southwark Council’s Rye Lane regeneration project.

The busy thoroughfare is being turned into a public square with its heritage buildings restored and

renovated.

As the News has reported, the move has not been without controversy, with Bournemouth Close residents frustrated their garages were being knocked down to make way for the new units, and salon owners worried about losing business from the move.

Southwark Council bought out businesses in Peckham Rye station’s arcades to clear the site, with planning permission to demolish given in March 2015.

Sixteen properties were handed compulsory purchase orders after negotiations between the council and landlords failed.

In a statement sent to the News, Peckham Palms directors explained: “The Palms also aims to address the crucial issue of under-represented Black female ownership of the Black hair industry in the UK. “Three out of four directors of the business are black women, two being local, and the current owners of The Palms, Something & Son, have made a commitment that the organisation will transition to majority black

ownership no later than the fifth anniversary of opening.

“This will give those who want to see fundamental change in who owns and benefits from the lucrative Afro hair and beauty marketplace in London the chance to invest in and own their local businesses.

“Once ownership has been transferred, The Palms will be the first hair, beauty and shopping hub in London run by the black community, where customers can support local black enterprise.”

Peckham Palms is run by Something & Son, which won a tender from Southwark Council to operate the centre. Other projects run by their team include Barking Bathhouse, a community-run spa, Makerversity, a working space in Somerset House, and Mission Kitchen, a shared kitchen for food businesses.

It says all full-time, directly employed staff at Peckham Palms will be paid a London Living Wage with the aim of achieving this selfemployed and salon staff.

Council can borrow to build homes, but we need to go further

AST MONTH’S budget was just the latest in a series of disappointing budgets over the last nine years of Tory and Lib Dem Tory government.

While the budget failed to tackle the funding crisis impacting on councils in London and across the country, didn’t provide our schools with the funds they so desperately need and still left King’s College Hospital with debts of more than £300million and an annual deficit of £150million, there was one step forward on housing.

I was glad to see the cap lifted on councils’ ability to borrow in order to build new council homes, something that I have been lobbying for many years to achieve.

But despite this one positive step there is still a huge amount

more to do to start to make an impact on the housing crisis.

Southwark Labour has the most ambitious programme of council house building in the country – with a costed programme to build 11,000 new council homes.

There is no substitute for genuinely affordable secure council homes to address the housing crisis.

I’d like to see the pace of building accelerate and then in due course the target raised.

In the meantime we need government grants for building social housing – cut by 98% by

the Tories and Lib Dems to be restored.

We need to go further and faster in making changes to our planning laws, to repeal the ‘viability test’, a get out clause for developers introduced by the Tories and Lib Dems in 2012.

We need to change the law to make it possible for councils to buy land to build new council homes at affordable rates, rather than at the current hugely inflated prices. And given the huge pressure on affordable homes, I believe we need to suspend the right to buy to stop

THE PROBLEMS AT THE MAUDSLEY HAVE TO BE CONSIDERED AS PART OF A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS ACROSS THE COUNTRY

W

hen the Chief Executive of the South London and Maudsley Trust says his staff are doing ‘their best every day, often in difficult circumstances’ you cannot help but truly sympathise, despite their acute care being labelled ‘inadequate’ by the Care Quality Commission.

Upon reading their report you are struck by the huge amount of pressure those on the frontline are under and the sheer lack of staff and resources to cope with the situation. And it would be all too easy for us to sit at a distance and simply criticise the hospital based on the findings of this latest report.

The needs of those suffering from mental health issues are wholly inadequate across the length and breadth of the country. That is precisely why the government in its latest budget has made £2 billion available for increased services, including a mental health ‘hot line.’ Chancellor Phillip Hammond said this comes as the ‘era of austerity is coming to an end.’

Indeed it was during the financial crisis of 2007-2008 that this world-renowned psychiatric hospital in Camberwell closed its emergency clinic and patients were directed to King’s College Hospital’s accident and emergency department nearby.

Also in this edition, we highlight the fact that staff at King’s, across the road from the Maudsley, are facing well above average incidents of bullying, harassment or abuse from patients, relatives or the public.

It must be noted that King’s own acute services are not included in the Care Quality Commission’s report on the Maudsley. And in many areas of the Maudsley, care is rated good or outstanding, including ‘care and compassion shown by staff’.

The size of the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust goes far beyond its base in Camberwell. Many readers might not be aware that it provides mental health services to 1.3 million people across Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham and Croydon. More than 1,200 nurses are employed among its 5,000-strong staff. And the high turnover and continuing unfilled vacancies are a huge part of the problem and the general crisis across the country.

It is completely right that everyone including the News examines more closely, asks how and why incidents compromising the safety of patients in acute care – the most vulnerable of all – are happening. But we cannot forget that all too often the NHS has to make the best of what it is given. And since the ‘age of austerity’, what has been given, is not enough.

the loss of homes from the social sector until the crisis is addressed.

The budget was also presented in a Brexit vacuum, with no account taken of the enormous impact Brexit is likely to have on our economy, and therefore on the tax revenues which fund our public services.

This government is faltering, failing to invest in the services we all rely on and the new homes which would make a difference to thousands of households across south. It simply isn’t good enough.

The time for courageous action is now O

NE OF the most extraordinary peaceful protests in Southwark’s history took place last Saturday.

Nearly 6,000 protesters sat and occupied five Thames bridges, including Southwark Bridge, in one of the largest acts of Gandhian nonviolent direct action, ever to take place in London. London Bridge and Vauxhall bridges were left open, as in the Marathon, to ensure emergency vehicles operated safely.

They were making a desperate plea to the UK government to take the climate crisis seriously. The protest followed two terrifying reports that came out in August & September. A report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences stated that the earth was close to irreversible runaway globing warming, meaning that soon humanity could no longer do anything to stop it.

Then the UN Secretary General

issued an unprecedented alarm call to the world, stating that unless we started radical cuts to carbon emissions, within TWO years, the human race faced extinction.

Despite this, the UK government issued no response and instead threw oil on the flames in October’s budget, by giving billions more to road building, fracking & North Sea oil tax subsidies and fuel duty cuts, whilst cutting funding for clean renewable energy & home insulation in half. Our solar industry has been slashed by 95% in just two years.

Then, a new protest movement sprung out of nowhere, called the Extinction Rebellion. In a matter of weeks, it gained such momentum that thousands were willing to face arrest by taking peaceful nonviolent direct action by closing the bridges. The police arrested 82 of us, one by one.

Our protest demands were simple.

High-rise gigantism I AM writing to express my disappointment at the revisions, just published, to the planning application for the new town centre at Canada Water.

True, the height of the tallest tower, at the south east corner of Canada Water dock, is down from 162 to 138 metres, but not much has changed otherwise.

The application still proposes five towers of more than 100 metres, with two more just under that height. All are well above the height of nearby tall buildings, of which Ontario Point, by the busstation, is the highest at 78 metres.

One of these is a 129m tower placed next to the Dock Manager’s Office on Surrey Quays Road to mark the point of entry to the development.

From the visuals provided even the podium of the tower appears to be as high as the top of the Dock Manager’s Clock Tower.

belittles one of the few survivals of the area’s dockland heritage.

It’s also objectionable of social grounds. Of the 186 flats there all but a handful are for private sale, with hardly any social or “affordable” element.

On the other end of this huge development, far away from the shops and the transport nodes, a 5-6 storey block is proposed for very small site next to Russia Dock Woodland.

There all 79 units are for social and “intermediate affordable” tenure, with no open market element. Thus the first two housing schemes for which detailed applications are submitted – it’s mostly an outline application – demonstrate maximum social and physical separation. To me such segregation is against the culture and tradition of the area.

More generally I would argue that such tall blocks have no aesthetic or social justification.

Far from stamping individuality on a development they make it anonymous and soul-less because they ignore the human scale of everyday life, which is the one in which people feel most comfortable. Is this highrise gigantism what we want?

Old school circus the modern way

DAVID WILLIAMSON is a giant in all that he does. He waves away the numerous awards received for his magic skills with a dismissive, ‘If you hang around long enough they feel they have to give you something.’ But I don’t believe that.

This man has worked with the best because he deserves to; he is the complete showman and that will be evident when he comes to town as the Ring Master in Circus 1903, writes Michael Holland...

I wanted to know what happens in life to make someone become a magician, and found that all the signs were there.

David comes from a small town called Xenia in Ohio and as a 7-year-old in ‘Mrs Moore’s class’ he read a book about Harry Houdini that taught a coin trick which he performed to his classmates. ‘Mrs Moore pointed at me and said, “David, maybe someday you’ll be a magician,” and that neural pathway was then burnt into my brain.’

A travelling magician visited the school soon after and Mrs Moore asked if their ‘little magician’ could help carry the props. The following Christmas David got a magic set from Santa and he was hooked. ‘I had a pack of cards under my desk in class and used to practise all day, everyday,’ remembers the man who has performed alongside the greatest conjurors. ‘I had to make sure I didn’t shuffle them too loudly, or drop them all,’ he laughs. Aged 10 he told his mother, ‘I’m going to be a professional magician,’ and by 13 he was going to festivals and conventions on his own. It was during these formative years that he met the ‘masters of magic’ who were very generous with their advice and guidance: ‘They could see I was keen,’ he recalls vividly. ‘They could see my

passion.’ He now pays that help forward when young magicians approach him at conventions.

A succession of school talent shows was followed by a job with a troupe of belly dancers that eased the young David into the world of show business.

He says, ‘I was dressed as a genie, and while the belly dancers did their thing on stage I would go around the tables doing tricks to the drunks.’

Magic and trickery has been around for all time, and with so many young performers coming up its future is guaranteed, but there must be a tremendous pressure to keep up with the game. David and others of his generation see new magicians on the internet displaying a great deal of knowledge and expertise, but he tells me that there is no real rivalry and that

knowledge and ideas are shared amongst them all. David himself is always inventing new tricks, some of which can be seen in his current show, Circus 1903.

Circus 1903 looks like it will be quite magical with puppetry from the awardwinning team behind War Horse and those who produced The Illusionists, the world’s biggest magic show, alongside a huge cast of the most unique, amazing and dangerous circus acts. From acrobats to contortionists, jugglers to trapeze, high wire performers and much more, this show should amaze, captivate, and transport audiences of all ages back to a Golden Age of circus.

David Williamson was part of the Illusionists when the show toured, and one of the producers told him that he was thinking about creating ‘a retro

bring life back to the earth.

Unfortunately, he is so absorbed in his song writing that he doesn’t notice his lover being seduced into the underworld

by Hades, played imposingly by Patrick Page, a man with the deepest voice I have ever heard.

Hades rules over a world of slaves who toil relentlessly to increase production, fuel his wealth and build a wall to keep them safe. The anthem they sing as they build was written by Anais Mitchell, pre-Trump and is strikingly prophetic “The enemy is poverty / And the wall keeps out the enemy / And we build the wall to keep us free.” It was a weakness of the show that Hades never feels genuinely threatening or frightening. Much less terrifying than the current US President.

Orpheus gains an audience with Hades through the power of his song and makes a bargain to release Eurydice. He can lead her out of Hades if he doesn’t look back. Seems easy enough but

when the Three Furies start harassing him with their chorus of ‘Doubt comes in’ it does indeed. Is Eurydice still following or has she left him again? The ending is as old as theatre but handled with subtlety and a degree of novelty.

This musical is original and energetic.

The lovers convince despite the constraints of form which necessitate meeting and ‘marrying’ in minutes and the rather boyish look of Reeve Carney as Orpheus. Eva Noblezada has a voice to fall in love with. The band are a great stage presence and the music stays with you long after the encore. I would happily return and see it again, if I win the lottery.

Visit Hadestown at a price IT SEEMS almost unfair to write this review about Anais Mitchell’s Hadestown, which opened this week at the National Theatre. You can’t now get a ticket for love nor money. Except, maybe, with a lot of money. By the morning after I saw it, a couple of seats together seemed to be retailing at about £500. So, is it worth it? Well, almost, writes Katie Kelly...

The show is a modern take on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, set in a seedy New Orleans style jazz club and then later in an industrial style underworld. The couple meet in the jazz club, both struggling to get by in a world where summers are getting shorter and food scarcer. Eurydice, played beautifully by Eva Noblezada is a world weary, hard bitten, young woman, focused on survival, but her heart and hand are won by Orpheus, his gift of song, and determined hope that music might melt the cruel heart of Hades and

circus show with life-size elephant puppets and all the talent out front and centre’. ‘I thought he was mad,’ reveals David, ‘just a modern day Barnum talking up a big game with no way he could pull it off. And sure enough, two years later I got the call asking if I’d like to be the Ring Master - “Our elephants are ready and the circus is coming to town,” he said, and I jumped straight on board.’

Circus 1903 has now toured Australia, the US, Singapore and had a six month residency in Las Vegas. Next stop is London where it will certainly brighten up many people’s Christmases. The Ring Master reveals that the show has tried to recreate what circus was like in the early part of the 20th century, and tells of the Russian Cradle act, and the 6th generation of Italian acrobats still

doing what their forefathers did. He piques my interest with inside info on those from Cirque du Soleil and how these are ‘hardcore circus acts who with each generation take the act further artistically and physically and now do it at a much higher level’.

At the end of our talk I gave this wonderful man the last word. ‘Our show is a theatrical circus and families may not be prepared for the emotional experience of it all because we tell the whole story of a circus coming to town… The first half you see us getting the big top ready and rehearsing and caring for the elephants, with little vignettes that give back stories to the performers, and you add this to the music and lights and it is a real theatrical experience, so people get really caught up in it. In the second half we do the circus with sideshow segments… It is thrilling, exciting, hilarious, a little scary, sweet, it’s touching, heartwarming, and people leave the theatre buoyant.’ He took a breath. ‘And what I’ve seen in the audiences,’ he started up again, ‘is three generations of families all sitting together, enjoying the same thing, which is rare these days as most families are spread between different rooms looking at screens on their own. No Marvel movie will capture people flying through the air in front of you like in this show - This is old school done the modern way.’

Section 226(1)(a) Town and Country Planning Act 1990 and the Acquisition of Land Act 1981 -----------------------------------------------------

Notice is hereby given that the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, in exercise of his powers under the above Acts, on 14 November 2018 confirmed with modifications the London Borough of Southwark (Aylesbury Estate Sites 1b/1c) Compulsory Purchase Order 2014 submitted by the London Borough of Southwark.

The order as confirmed provides for the purchase for the purposes of facilitating the carrying out of development, redevelopment and improvement on or in relation to the land, in particular, for the purpose of securing the regeneration of the Aylesbury Estate in accordance with the provisions of the Aylesbury Area Action Plan, including the demolition of existing residential units and the provision of a mixed tenure residential development and associated landscaping, of the land described in Schedule 1 hereto.

A copy of the order as confirmed by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government and of the map referred to therein have been deposited at Southwark Council offices, 160 Tooley Street, London SE1 2QH and may be seen at all reasonable hours.

The order as confirmed becomes operative on the date on which this notice is first published. A person aggrieved by the order may, by application to the High Court within 6 weeks from that date, challenge its validity under section 23 of the Acquisition of Land Act 1981. The grounds for challenge can be that the authorisation granted by the order is not empowered to be granted or that there has been a failure to comply with any relevant statutory requirement relating to the order.

FORM OF STATEMENT OF EFFECT OF PARTS 2 AND 3 OF THE COMPULSORY PURCHASE (VESTING DECLARATIONS) ACT 1981

Power to execute a general vesting declaration 1

Once the London Borough of Southwark (Aylesbury Estate Sites 1b/1c) Compulsory Purchase Order 2014 has become operative, the London Borough of Southwark (hereinafter called “the Council”) may acquire any of the land described in Schedule 1 above by executing a general vesting declaration under section 4 of the Compulsory Purchase (Vesting Declarations) Act 1981 (“the Act”). This has the effect, subject to paragraphs 3 and 5 below, of vesting land in the Council at the end of the period mentioned in paragraph 2 below.

As soon as may be after the Council execute a general vesting declaration, they must serve notice of it on every occupier of any of the land specified in the declaration (except land where there is one of the tenancies described in paragraph 4) and on every person who gives them information relating to the land in pursuance of the invitation contained in the confirmation notice of the order. When the service of notices of the general vesting declaration is completed, a period specified in the declaration, of not less than three months, will begin to run. On the first day after the end of this period the land described in the declaration will, subject to what is said in paragraphs 3 and 5, vest in the Council together with the right to enter on the land and take possession of it. Every person on whom the Council could have served a notice to treat in respect of his interest in the land (other than a tenant under one of the tenancies described in paragraph 4) will be entitled to claim compensation for the acquisition of his interest in the land, with interest on the compensation from the vesting date.

The “vesting date” for any land specified in a declaration will be the first day after the end of the period mentioned in paragraph 2 above, unless a counter-notice is served under Schedule A1 to the Act within that period. In such circumstances, the vesting date for the land which is the subject of the counter-notice will be determined in accordance with Schedule A1.

Modifications with respect to certain tenancies 4

In the case of certain tenancies, the position stated above is subject to modifications. The modifications apply where the tenancy is either a “minor tenancy”, i.e. a tenancy for a year or a yearly tenancy or a lesser interest, or “a long tenancy which is about to expire”. The latter expression means a tenancy granted for an interest greater than a minor tenancy but having on the vesting date a period still to run which is not more than the period specified in the declaration for this purpose (which must be more than a year). In calculating how long a tenancy still has to run, where any option to renew or to terminate it is available to either party, it shall be assumed that the landlord will take every opportunity open to him to terminate the tenancy while the tenant will use every opportunity to retain or renew his interest.

The modifications are that the Council may not exercise the right of entry referred to in paragraph 2 in respect of land subject to a tenancy described in paragraph 4 unless they first serve notice to treat in respect of the tenancy and then serve every occupier of the land with a notice of their intention to enter and take possession after the period (not less than three months from the service of the notice) specified in the notice. The right of entry will be exercisable at the end of that period. The vesting of the land will be subject to the tenancy until the end of that period or until the tenancy comes to an end, whichever happens first.

Harrison: ‘It was a night for warriors’

FISHER SENSATIONALLY went top of the SCEFL Premier Division table on Tuesday night with a 3-1 win over Canterbury City at St Paul’s, writes John Kelly...

Despite having most of the squad from last season in the First Division and one of the lowest budgets in the league, Fisher went two points above Beckenham Town in the table.

Andrew Mott put the hosts ahead in the fourth minute but the visitors were level through Rob Lawrence a half an hour in.

Mott restored Fisher’s lead six minutes later and Richie Hamill, from the penalty spot, secured the three points in the sixth minute of injurytime.

It is the first time Fisher have been top of a league table since 2007 Conference South. The Fish finished fourth that season before losing 4-2 on aggregate to Hampton & Richmond Borough in the play-off semi-finals.

Fisher boss Dean Harrison was elated after seeing his side go top with 37 points from seventeen games.

“My thoughts are that was a battling performance, it was a war out there. It wasn’t a night for football purists, it was a night for warriors,” Harrison told Kentish Football.

“I spoke to (programme editor) Ian Murphy in the week and I said, ‘has the club ever been top of the league since it

reformed?’ And he said no.

“I think we’ve been reformed now for nine years, next year’s the ten-year anniversary. So that’s a lovely thing for the club and everyone who’s a part of this club and who put all the work in to keep it going. Everyone deserves that, all the supporters to the backroom.

“It means a hell of a lot, a hell of a lot to a hell of a lot of people who come and support us every week, who work hard to keep this club going.

“It’s lovely, I mean there’s a long way to go and like we say our ambitions for the season are to stay up, so every win for us is a bonus.

“We’re under no pressure, we’re enjoying it and at the minute we’re doing okay, so long may it continue.

“I don’t know if we’re title contenders.

I think there’s a lot of good sides about at the moment but we’re working hard and we’re enjoying it.

“I’ve got a good team that works hard for each other, that’s all I ask them. It’s a happy dressing room, proper solid men. We don’t have any egos in there.

We don’t have that problem. If anyone shows a bad attitude they’re gone, they won’t be welcomed so we’ve got a team of men in there who want to fight for each other and play for the badge.”

LYNN ABC boasted three winners out of five competitors at the Sunday Alliance National Novice finals last weekend.

FRANCESCA ALI said “it’s good to be home” after completing her move to Millwall Lionesses from local rivals Crystal Palace last week, writes Frankie Christou...

Ali, 26, left the Eagles after spending two-and-a-half years at the club to return to the Lionesses where she was part of the development squad in her teens.

The central midfielder adds experience to a squad that, with an average age of eighteen, is the youngest in the Women’s Championship.

Manager Chris Phillips has recruited Ali in the hope she can improve a side that has picked up just one point in eight league games this season.

After her first training session, Ali spoke to the club’s official website. “I was at Millwall for a number of years, I sort of grew up as a Lioness from when I was 12 till I was 18 until I moved on. For some reason I always end up back here, so it’s good to be home.”

Ali follows former team-mate Ellie Stenning who joined Millwall from Crystal Palace last summer and explained she was important in encouraging the move.

“I spoke to Ellie and she spoke highly of the club, the girls and the coaching staff. Obviously, with her feedback, it

was easier for me to come back and feel at ease in training.

“I love to be on the ball, I like to get stuck in and I am not afraid of a challenge “It’s going to be weird being one of the most experienced players in the team, I am not really used to that. I think it’s good, it’s a lot of reasonability to take on but I’m up for the challenge and the girls are great.

“There is so much potential within this squad and I think with the fact that obviously there is no relegation this season, it allows the inexperienced players to gain experience.”

Ali made her debut last weekend, but couldn’t help the Lionesses avoid a 5-1 defeat at home to Durham. They went 2-0 down to the visitors within our minutes before Evie Clarke pulled a goal back a minute later in a chaotic start.

Beth Hepple made it 3-1 in the tenth minute, and Sarah Wilson added a fourth before the break at Dartford’s Princes Park. Durham went 5-1 up in the 55th minute through Zoe Hepps as Phillips’ side fell to a seventh defeat in eight games.

The Lionesses face a daunting fixture this weekend when they travel to Leigh Sports Village to take on second-place Manchester United.

Cyrus Donaldson won the junior under50kg title with a unanimous points decision over Thomas Reiley from CBC ABC. Miguel Aguilera then claimed victory in the senior under-63.5kg category with a third-round stoppage over Sting ABC’s Tony Clemmey.

Our Dulwich Hamlet reporter meets the MP who played a crucial role in the return of the club to Champion Hill and learns there is still value in shared experiences and community spirit THE UPS and downs of Dulwich Hamlet’s past year have been enough to raise the blood pressure of even the most happy-go-lucky of fans.

From eviction and possible dissolution, through the ecstasy of promotion to the relief of returning home, it has been a rollercoaster ride.

However, the physical and emotional devotion of ardent supporters to their club is to be expected. One of the more remarkable facets of Dulwich’s journey home has been the attention it has drawn from outside the club’s immediate fanbase.

From some of the biggest names in football, to highly influential politicians with seemingly no reason to be concerned about a non-league side, Dulwich has manged to capture the imagination.

I spoke to Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, one of the politicians who contributed most to Hamlet’s cause, who cast light on the reasons why Dulwich was able to hold a

nation’s attention.

Dulwich was a political force in Helen’s eyes from long before the club’s recent adventures.

“I first came into contact with the club as a local councillor,” Helen explained.

“It was probably around the time they were beginning their rise through the ranks that ultimately led to their promotion last season.

“I would constantly hear residents talking about the fortunes of the club, and that was around the time I first took my kids along.

“As a local MP trying to represent the views of my constituents the plight of the club became an increasingly significant issue, particularly through the long discussions there have been about planning for the site of Champion Hill.

“Then when the dispute escalated at the beginning of this year things became a lot more concerning and I really felt that I needed to contribute.”

The local MP emphasised the negative social and economic impact of the club’s eviction, but was optimistic about a

brighter future.

Helen continues: “Local residents have really missed the home games. Primarily, they’re a fantastic afternoon out to be enjoyed with family and friends of all ages.

“Some fans have been able to continue attending but it’s obviously not the same travelling to Tooting as when it’s on your doorstep.

“From an economic perspective, it’s undoubtedly been the case that lots of local businesses have felt the negative impact of the club moving away. The large number of fans that descend on East Dulwich every Saturday afternoon provides a major contribution to local bars, pubs and restaurants. So, the club’s return will give a real economic boost to the local area.”

Helen’s comments echo the sentiments of Dulwich fans and local business owners.

But the real question is how has the club’s situation drawn so much attention from public figures including senior politicians?

“I think there are relatively few institutions and bases that draw together people from every part of a community,” Helen says. “The most special part about Dulwich Hamlet FC is that it attracts people of all ages,

by Ben Henderson all backgrounds, all incomes and unites them under the banner of one local football club.

“I don’t think it’s an accident that Dulwich has this ability to bring people together. The club’s approach to good causes and inclusivity, tackling equality issues, working hard to create a really good atmosphere on a Saturday afternoon - these are the foundations on which that community cohesion is built and it has resulted in a solidarity that’s very special. That’s why they get such large audiences and that’s why local residents care so much.

“As a local MP the number of my constituents that get in touch saying that this institution is really important to them is remarkable.

My constituency is very diverse and so something that brings the people together like that is fantastic.”

Helen believes that the importance of Hamlet both personally and

politically was the driving factor that brought about the club’s return to East Dulwich.

“In the end it was becoming increasingly clear that the future was looking very precarious indeed for Hamlet. Without the revenues from the match-day gate and the bar, the longterm existence of the club was very much in doubt.

“I think it was the pressure created by that potential outcome combined with incredibly strong public support that really forced the issue. It meant that all three parties (Landlords Meadow, Southwark Council and the club) had to get round the table and reach a resolution.”

Helen’s perspective of Dulwich’s journey and why it matters is testament to the uniting power of the club. On a broader level, the fact that Dulwich’s ability to bring people together is so coveted by politicians shows its exceptional nature.

This is telling of a wider society lacking in identity and shared experiences around which people can unite. A world in which we are all equally connected by tapping a screen has reduced the prevalence of common and tangible experience.

However, Hamlet is proof of the fact that, however increasingly rare, nothing quite beats genuine community spirit.

Hamlet spot on to advance in London Senior Cup DULWICH HAMLET are through to the quarter-finals of the London Senior Cup after a night of penalty drama in Greenwich Borough.

Gavin Rose’s visitors went ahead on Tuesday night against their Isthmian League South opponents when Iffy Allen scored in the thirteenth minute.

The hosts equalised when Teo Kurtaran dispatched the first of eleven successful penalties, drawing his side level seven minutes before half-time.

Jay May put Hamlet back in front in the 62nd minute and they were moments from going through before Reece Deakin scored from the spot in the last minute.

In the penalty shootout Ashley Carew, May, Anthony Cook, Dipo Akinyemi and Gavin Tomlin all scored, but Borough missed their fourth penalty as Hamlet squeezed through.

Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Hamlet in National League South last Saturday as they lost 1-0 at home against Oxford City at Imperial Fields.

Hamlet were reduced to ten men in the 25th minute when Quade Taylor was sent off for a dangerous tackle.

The visitors went in front six minutes after half-time through Jack Self and held on to that lead.

Hamlet are fifteenth in the table with 22 points after 18 games.

The club are aiming to be back at Champion Hill for their next home league game against Torquay on December 1.

IT'S BEEN a season so far in which Bolton have defied expectations and then confirmed them.

Their campaign has gone into free-fall since they were a point off the play-offs at the end of September. They haven't won in seven, picking up one point from the last 21 available, and only Ipswich below them prop up the table.

The News spoke to the chief sports writer of The Bolton News, Marc Iles, this week for an insight into current happenings at Wanderers.

Southwark News: Bolton had financial problems during the summer including reports of players not being paid in time – has that all been resolved?

Marc Iles: The player strike involved unpaid bonuses and saw the cancellation of a friendly against St Mirren at very late notice. It was solved, eventually, but to say all of Bolton's ills have disappeared would be wrong. I could write reams on the subject - ask readers of The Bolton News.

As a club, Bolton are not saddled with a massive amount of debt. They may indeed make a small profit this year thanks to the sale of Gary Madine to Cardiff City. The problem lies in the overheads, and though a lot of work has

gone into streamlining the losses, they still weigh in at around £6m a year.

Bolton need investment to move forward. That isn't a criticism of the owner, Ken Anderson, just a fact of life.

Until they find someone with deeper pockets the club is always going to be vulnerable, financially.

SN: One who reportedly had payment withheld was Ben Amos – could you explain a little bit more what went on there?

MI: Ben has found himself at the centre of a couple of pay issues. During the summer, bonuses were withheld across the board, prompting the squad to strike. But Ben also had his monthly salary affected. Another late wage payment cropped up a few weeks back, although it was cleared relatively quickly.

Bolton's owner said cash-flow problems during the summer were to blame for the first instance. He has yet to say anything on the record to explain the second delay.

SN: At £16,000 a week, is Amos one of the higher earners and is he likely to leave next summer?

MI: It isn't any secret that Ben is the highest earner left on the books at Bolton. His contract expires in the summer, so I'd imagine he will move on.

It is a shame that the financial problems

at the club materialised in the same season he signed permanently at Bolton. He'd been excellent on loan, but the 2015-16 season was dreadful from start to finish. No-one came out of that one with much credit.

SN: Mark Beevers is someone who was highly regarded at Millwall – how has he been playing this season?

MI: Beevs had been a first choice up until this season when Marc Wilson and Jack Hobbs arrived to add a bit of extra competition at centre-half. He got back in against Swansea and Hull City and looked decent.

You know what you get from him – I just wish he'd find that regular supply of goals we saw in the League One promotion season.

SN: Bolton haven’t won in seven – is Phil Parkinson under pressure, either from fans or at boardroom level?

MI: There are obviously a lot of frustrated supporters at Bolton. It's one win in thirteen now, and one goal in ten-and-a-half hours of football. I'd say the majority of the anger or calls for him to be replaced have come from social media – as is the way nowadays.

But you can sense there has been a change in the mood, recently.

Messages from the boardroom – or the owner, as there is no board – have been a bit mixed. After saying in one of his

columns that he would take "any actions necessary" to rectify the drop in form, most people took that as a warning shots across the manager's bouws. Mr Anderson has since added some words of support for Parkinson and left things to settle over the international break.

SN: After a 1-0 win over Derby at the end of September, Bolton were nine points ahead of Millwall. What are the reasons behind the slump since then?

MI: A lack of goals is the main issue.

Only Christian Doidge found the back of the net in October – so I guess he's a safe bet for goal of the month.

Defensively, it hasn't been too bad but Parkinson's critics will point out his tactics tend to err on the conservative side, and that means it has been tough to watch. Bolton haven't won a game after conceding the first goal in their last 73 attempts. So the first one is important at The Den.

SN: Which attacking players will Parkinson be looking to for some magic on Saturday as they look to score for the first time in five games?

MI: Anyone. Literally anyone!

Josh Magennis started superbly after signing from Charlton and scored four early goals. He has since gone off the boil a little and been consigned to the bench. I'd hope he can rediscover some

form.

Doidge has a great record at lowerleague level and scored a peach against Rotherham United. If they can find a way of getting him in the team regularly, I think he will score goals.

Erhun Oztumer, once of Dulwich Hamlet, has got something different about him and I'd like to think he can find a spark. Sammy Ameobi is back from injury too, so he's always capable of something spectacular.

SN: How are Bolton likely to set up at The Den and what will their approach be?

MI: Usually 4-2-3-1, as I mentioned, Parkinson's tactical approach has been a political hot potato of late.

If you are being critical, Bolton tend to set-up not to concede, first and foremost. Two defensive central midfielders – Jason Lowe and Joe Williams – operate in front of a back four, leaving the other five to push on.

Maybe the lack of a link man between attack and defence has been Wanderers' undoing.

SN: Finally, a score prediction?

MI: I fancy Bolton to score. Their record at Millwall has been pretty good in the last few years – ever since Chris Eagles skied a penalty half way to Peckham in a game which cost Owen Coyle his job in 2012.

I'm going for 1-1.

JORDAN ARCHER could return to Millwall’s team for the first time since August 26 for their game against Bolton Wanderers at The Den on Saturday.

With Ben Amos unable to play against his parent club under the terms of his loan arrangement, Archer is set to start in goal.

Lions boss Neil Harris will hope that the six players away on international duty return fit. Mahlon Romeo was the last to arrive back at Calmont Road, after Antigua & Barbuda’s CONCACAF Nations League qualifier in Martinique on Tuesday.

The rest of the squad will have had two weeks to prepare for a crucial game against a side with the same number of points, sixteen. Only Ipswich have accumulated a lower total than Bolton, Hull Millwall and Reading.

Striker Tom Elliott revealed Harris has told the squad what he expects this weekend after the 4-3 defeat at Norwich before the international break.

“I know a few of the group have been away, but we’ve had a few meetings and the gaffer just wants us to react and come back fighting, ready to take on Bolton,” Elliott said.

“The gaffer really wants us now to cut out the mistakes defensively, as that was something we were so good with last year.

“The manager prides the team on defending as a unit. Myself, Gregs [Lee Gregory] and the forwards have to defend from the front a lot, and we are backed up by the midfield and then the defence.

That’s what we need if we want to defend successfully in that way. We work on it quite a lot in training every day.”

Millwall will be without Tom

It’s an injury that ended Byron Webster’s season in September 2017.

“It was strange finding out about Bradders’ news, as everything was very similar to my injury,” Webster said.

“We came in for training on the Monday after the [Brentford] game, and he just said he had a sore knee or a dead leg. At least that’s what I thought. Then afterwards he got the bad news that he’d damaged his ACL. Obviously it’s not a good time for him and his family, but we know

he’ll get through it.

“Everyone’s behind Bradders. We were all shocked, really. He’s just come through the door and the injury has come from nowhere, and it’s a long time he’ll be out of the squad. But the team will always be there for him.”

Webster, 31, can give Bradshaw advice on how to manage his recovery.

Webster continued: “I’ve said to Bradders that there’s no escaping the fact that it’s a long slog, but he has good support around him from his family, team-mates and the medical staff who will get him through it.

“We’re an attacking player short now. It’s certainly something we’ve got to consider,” Harris said.

“Nobody will leave unless we want them to go. Can we be better than in last year’s window? January proved to be a very important window for us, we did some excellent business, but not expensive business, by any means. We made some good signings and when players came in they had a huge impact not just on the field but off the field as well. It’s an important window for us, but what I will say is there is a lot of football to be played between now and January to determine whether we need players in or players to go out the door to go and play football.”

Harris added: “The next six to eight weeks is quite time-consuming for Tom. He has to try to keep swelling to a minimum around the knee joint where the operation was.

“It’s rest and recovery and at the right time trying to strengthen. It’s about getting his range back and movement in his leg.

“Fortunately Tom is a very positive fella, mentally very strong.

“It’s been a real blow for the whole squad because he’s such a good trainer and such a good lad. Not having him on the training pitch has been a big blow but it’s a reminder to everybody, players in particular, how fortunate they are in what they do – and how quickly that can be

to jogging and then running, getting out on the grass and touching the ball – there are so many little targets, which works as a positive, as you can see your progression.

“Staying strong and having that support is the main thing. Luckily for me, I don’t go on social media much or read too much nonsense from people, and that could help him. There will always be doubters and negative people along with all the positive, but he has to stay strong.

for example, he’s done it two or three times and now he’s scoring on his England debut. Putting the work in reaps the rewards. He’s got great people around him, like I’ve said, and I know what he’s going through.

Millwall boss on January transfer window: ‘We’re a striker short’

NEIL HARRIS says Millwall will “consider” whether they need to sign a striker in January.

The Lions’ attacking striking quartet was reduced to three when Tom Bradshaw was ruled out for the season with a knee injury.

Fred Onyedinma is on loan with Wycombe until January with uncertainty over his immediate Lions future, and Aiden O’Brien could play up front, as he did for the Republic of Ireland in their 0-0 draw away to Denmark on Monday night.

But it still leaves Harris without one of his recognised out-and-out centreforwards.

RYAN LEONARD has revealed that there were “harsh words” and “conversations which were needed” at Millwall’s training ground over the international break.

The Lions lost 4-3 to Norwich in their last game after conceding twice in injurytime to hand the three points to the Canaries.

The result leaves them 21st in the Championship table, level on sixteen points with this Saturday’s opponents Bolton.

“We wanted a game to come as quickly as possible but obviously we’ve had the break and we have had a few harsh words and some conversations which were needed,” Leonard said. “To be fair, training since then has been second to none, probably some of the best training sessions since I’ve been here.

“It was very disappointing, and probably one of the most topsy-turvy games I’ve ever played in, to go from 21 down to scoring from the kick-off and then going 3-2 up, we’re thinking, ‘we’ve got a result here’. A result which we needed and which was going to change our season.

“It was a real sucker punch to us which, to be honest, I don’t really think we deserved. We got punished for small

mistakes, and at this level away from home against teams at the top of the league you can’t afford to make those mistakes. You will get punished.

“It was more of a case of disappointment. We’re not a group that digs each other out, we’re not a group that passes the blame. Everyone knows they could have done better.

“We were all gutted, all sat there with heads in hands, it was a horrible feeling.

It wasn’t for the want of trying, everyone ran their hardest.

“We could have done with a game to put it right, but we’ve had a couple of weeks in training to work on areas we need to improve.

“I’m not someone who in meetings will stand up and make big speeches or have a go at people. When I get out on the pitch I’m more of a talker then.

“We’ve had meetings and it’s been really good for people to get their opinions across and say what they did wrong and what they should have done on certain goals. We’ve had really good discussions where people have stepped up and said important stuff.

“We’ve got a squad of players who have really good experience, and plenty of people who potentially could captain the football club. That’s always a bonus in good times and bad. You’ve got people who will stand up and be counted. We’ve got that in abundance here, so that’s nothing to be worried about at all.

a good time and we’re all ready to go on Saturday now.”

Leonard scored to make it 2-2 at Carrow Road, his second goal in three games.

Shaun Williams has four, and the former Southend man believes the partnership will be even more fruitful as he makes the most of a relatively new position.

“I’ve enjoyed playing in a more

advanced role, it’s not one I’ve played a lot in my career,” Leonard said. “I’ve played nearly 300 games now but not many in that kind of attacking position.

It’s something I’ve really thrived off. The gaffer said: ‘Go and take the handbrake off and enjoy your game.’

“Luckily enough I’ve managed to chip in with a few goals and assists and if it continues it’ll be good for me and the team.

“We’ve got quite a good relationship.

It’s not an out-and-out pairing where one plays forward and one plays defensive.

We’ve both got a good all-round game where if one wants to go forward then that’s how it works, and all either of us has to do is to have a little look over the shoulder. If one is a bit deeper then the other one knows to bomb on and get into the box.

“To be fair to Shaun he’s got quite a few goals so if we can both chip in with five, six, seven goals this year it’ll really help the attack.”

One area of real concern for Millwall is at the other end of the pitch in the last quarter of games. They have conceded fifteen Championship goals after the 68th minute of their seventeen fixtures so far, costing them a total of thirteen points from drawing or winning positions.

Asked if he had an explanation, Leonard said: “I wish! I think the gaffer would like to know that as well. It’s strange, I don’t understand it, but it’s something we need to work on. We know that, we’re not a

perfect team by any stretch of the imagination. There are areas we need to work on and improve.

“Those stages late in games is something we need to address. Whether it’s down to concentration levels, I’m not sure. We’d all love to know the exact reason why.

“A lot of the goals do come down to errors at this level, and slight errors will get punished. At this level you don’t even need to make mistakes and you can get punished because players are so good.

Players are in this division for a reason, they all have quality.

“We need to stay concentrated, keep talking to each other on the pitch and keep switched on. I think then we’ll see a difference at the end of games.

“We could have stopped Norwich’s late goals, it shows we have to be ultraconcentrated to stop players at this level.

“When you score three goals away from home you expect to take home three points, if not a point minimum. We know we need to work on things like that.

“If you look back at the points we should have taken from games then we should be a lot higher in the league than we are. I know it’s very tight at the bottom at the moment but if we can just close out games using the experience that we have we can be in a much different position.

“It’s not a case of panic stations, it’s more that we need to learn from our mistakes. As long as we do that and put things right we’ll be fine.”

MILLWALL COULD receive one of the biggest sums in their history for a player – after one of their youth midfielders joined the Premier League champions.

Darko Gyabi, 14, has moved to Manchester City with the initial compensation and various potential add-ons related to benchmarks over a successful club and international career worth well in excess of £1million.

Millwall wanted to keep Gyabi, with senior boss Neil Harris admitting “he’s an exceptional young player”.

Gyabi is from Catford and follows in the path of another south Londoner,

Jadon Sancho, 18, who joined City before moving to Borussia Dortmund in Germany in 2017 and making his senior England debut this year.

But even the potential sum for England youth international Gyabi tops what City agreed for Sancho when he moved from Watford, reportedly for around £500,000.

Harris stressed that if Millwall are going to lose young players then they have to ensure they get the “best deal for the club”.

“As the manager of the football club, you want to see the opportunity for your young players to thrive, but it’s very difficult in the modern game to keep players who have their heads turned by huge, world-renowned club,” Harris said.

Dealing with players that have played 50, 60 international games, and then you’re dealing with thirteen-, fourteen-year-olds. It’s very tough.

“This is one that has been publicised, but loads of these go on through the course of a season at our club and everywhere else in the country and don’t get reported.

“I’ve seen Darko play myself a couple of times and he’s an exceptional young player. But when Man City come calling it’s very difficult to make players want to stay.

“If players aren’t going to stay then you have to make sure you get the best deal for the club.

“We wish Darko all the best for the future and we hope to see him on the big stage one day.”

Lenny: ‘I’ll take a 1-0 win’

RYAN LEONARD has a goal target this season – but he’ll be content not being on the scoresheet this Saturday if it means a 1-0 win for his side.

Leonard, 26, has scored two goals in his last three games ahead of the weekend’s clash with Bolton at The Den, though the last one at Norwich counted for little in a 4-3 defeat.

Millwall are aiming for a fourth successive home win, and Leonard is keeping his personal target a secret.

“A hat-trick on Saturday will get me closer to it!” Leonard joked.

“No, I’ll never say what it is because I’ll put too much pressure on myself, which I do anyway.

“I’m just going to try to keep chipping in, whether it’s an assist or a goal. At the end of the day if I don’t score and we win 1-0 on Saturday I’ll be very happy with that.

“It makes it a nice interesting game for us now. We’re looking forward to Saturday. They’re coming here wanting to pick up three points, but the initiative is on us.

“Luckily enough, from when I’ve been involved we’ve done really well in the home games and we just have to keep producing performances and keep winning at The Den. “In home games we’re on the front foot most of the time. It’s a very difficult place to play, the fans get behind us really well and it’s something that we can really work off.”
