Inside Ellis’s death row cell

AN ART installation recreating the prison cell of Ruth Ellis, the last woman in Britain to be hanged, has been unveiled in Bermondsey this week.

The Glad I Did It project, by artist Christina Reihill, will explore the ‘hanging that rocked Britain’, through the artists’ imagining of Ellis’ cell, informed by close readings of her diaries and psychiatrist letters.

Ellis was hanged in July 1955 after murdering her abusive lover David Blakely, shooting him five times outside a Hampstead pub.

She infamously remarked in the dock at the Old Bailey: “It's obvious when I shot him I intended to kill him.”

Blakely, an upper-class racing driver, was frequently violent towards her, and may have even caused Ellis to miscarry, punching her in the stomach while pregnant.

The verdict sparked a backlash, but it was no use: the-then Home Secretary refused to consider a 50,000 strong petition against her execution.

The case helped strengthen the case for abolishing the death penalty, which was finally removed from the statute books in 1965.

The art project bills itself as an examination of the “the thwarted desires and impulsive behaviours that led to Ellis’ execution” and asks visitors to question whether they really are different from Ellis.

It promises to unveil never before seen details of the case – and through her research artist Christina Reihill has become convinced that Ellis wanted to die and even enjoyed her time in

The Southwark News is proud to be the only independent, paid for newspaper in London.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

STAFF AT Waterloo station have welcomed an unusual new recruit into their ranks last week: Aria the Harris hawk.

Aria, 5, will patrol the skies around the station to scare off pigeons and other ‘unwelcome guests’.

She will be on duty alongside handler Max Bell twice a week for two hour shifts to scare off pests nestling in the station’s Victorian rafters.

Jason Murphy, Waterloo area manager for Network Rail, said: “Pigeons can be a real nuisance for people using the station.

“They also cause a lot of mess which needs cleaning up at some expense.

“So Aria’s work is really important in making the station a better place for our passengers,

while saving us money on our cleaning bills.

“She’s a very hard worker and we’re delighted to have her as part of the station team here at Waterloo.”

Hard-working Aria, who grew up in St Albans, has previously had roles at King’s Cross station and the Treasury during her high-flying career.

Her handler, Max Bell, said: “Aria really enjoys the environment at Waterloo and is delighted to be here.

“She does a great job and often likes to reward herself with a relaxing bath in the puddles that gather on the rain shelters over the platforms.”

GERMAN KRAFT are starting weekends off on the right foot by introducing the Bavarian Breakfast at Mercato Metropolitano.

A weekend only beer-based start to the day, the Bavarian Breakfast is a fully ‘balanced’ meal designed to get Saturdays and Sundays off to a great start.

The Breakfast includes two sausages, a traditional hand-made pretzel and a pint of delicious wheat beer to wash it all down.

Weiss, or wheat beer, is traditionally drunk at breakfast time in Bavaria along with deliciously simple sausages and bread.

Sipping on the vitamin-rich amber liquid is the perfect start to the day,

according to Felix Bollen of German Kraft.

“Our Kraft Beer is high in vitamins and uses the purest water,” said Felix.

“Available every weekend at our Mercato Metropolitano it’s a relatively new concept for London – but a very familiar one back home in Bavaria.”

That doesn’t mean that breakfast just brings forward the beginning of the journey that ends with a hangover. “We really don’t expect anyone to treat breakfast as the start of a long beer session,” explains Felix.

“We think locals will relish the prospect of a hand-made breakfast at a good price and then go back to their normal weekend routines.”

German Kraft is pioneering the way in which beer is brewed in London by fusing traditional 400-year old recipes together with a modern water-distillation process

to purify water before beer is brewed, which is sustainably powered through waste heat from the brewing process.

After the water has been distilled various minerals are added to the water to customise the perfect brewing water for each beer type.

The Bavarian Breakfast costs £10 and includes two sausages, a pretzel and a pint of beer and is available from when the market opens at 11am.

A MAN who went to lay a poppy cross on a relative’s war grave at Camberwell Old Cemetery was horrified to find out a pile of contaminated rubbish had been left on top of the final resting place of 48 war dead – and it hasn’t been moved for FIFTEEN YEARS.

David Rodgers, from Sevenoaks, went to visit his wife’s great-grandfather’s grave on Friday, November 9 as his wife was unable to go herself but wanted to honour him for last weekend’s armistice centenary.

Thomas William Best, who lived on Astbury Road, near Queen’s Road in Peckham, was buried and commemorated at Camberwell Old Cemetery after being killed at 37 years of age on April 26, 1918.

The Private from the 16th Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters, Nottingham and Derby Regiment left behind a wife, Ethel, and children Thomas, Stanley, Hilda and Lilly.

He still has surviving grandchildren and great-grandchildren including David’s wife, who grew up in Peckham.

She remembers her grandfather Stanley telling her about his father who died in France from injuries in battle.

Mr Rodgers, a 53-year-old based in Sevenoaks, told the News: “Thomas died in 1918 and to mark 100 years since his death and also the end of the First World War we thought it would be nice to lay a poppy cross on his grave to commemorate him.

“It was to my horror that I found his grave appears to be covered over with a large mound of earth in a section of the cemetery that is being redeveloped by Southwark Council.

“It seems while the rest of the world were commemorating the fallen, those in Camberwell Old Cemetery were left forgotten.

“Whoever made the decision to do this should really be ashamed of themselves.”

Southwark Council says the rubbish was dumped illegally in 2003 and as it was contaminated with asbestos has been closed to the public ever since.

Shockingly, 48 unmarked war graves in total have been left covered in rubbish for the last fifteen years and throughout the armistice commemorations.

A dismayed Mr Rodgers told the News: “It is very disappointing that this has happened and hadn’t been fixed by the 100 year anniversary of the end of this First World War. “It does make you think - is this happening elsewhere as well?”

In response to a request by the News, Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for environment, transport management and air quality at Southwark Council said: “We are very sorry to hear of Mr. Rodgers’ distress on visiting his wife’s great-grandfather’s grave.

“Sadly, this and 47 other unmarked war graves were covered when illegal dumping occurred in this area of the cemetery back in 2003.

“The current works will remove this rubbish, while being careful to leave the graves beneath undisturbed.

“Forty-eight unmarked war graves have been located within the new burial area, which has been agreed with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).

“We will not be burying on top of war graves and we are working with the CWGC to ensure that all of these unmarked war graves are given the respect that they deserve.

“Dangerous contaminants such as asbestos were discovered in the dumped waste and this site has consequently been marked as unsafe and inaccessible to the public for the last fifteen years.

“The current works will open the area for public access again.

“While this area has been inaccessible, those buried in war graves have been remembered on a commemorative wall at Camberwell Old Cemetery, Private Thomas William Best is named among them.

“Throughout this development we remain absolutely committed to honouring all war graves, and will not bury over them in any circumstances.

“We are continuing to work with the CWGC and we are also looking at commemorating soldiers with Commonwealth War Grave headstones where possible.”

A spokesperson for the commission said: “We are very sorry that Mr Rogers was upset by the work taking place at Camberwell and can appreciate that this would have been distressing, particularly at this poignant time of year.

“However, we hope that the following information will demonstrate that this work is being undertaken to enable us to

Save Southwark Woods campaigner Lewis Schaffer told the News he believed it was ‘an impossibility’ the war graves would not be buried over.

He says the exact location of the remains are unclear, and are buried among 48,000 other bodies, up to 20 bodies deep.

“Residents still haven't been told do the planned layout for the new burial plots,” he said.

“But these 37 [sic] servicemen and women were buried on a shifting, muddy hillside almost 100 years ago.

“Their location was noted at the time on inaccurate paper maps.

“Now their graves will be covered by two metres of crushed building rubble and top soil, with new roadways and embankments on top. No one knows where their bodies are."

“Why did the Commission wait until this year to start putting down markers in the rest of the cemetery?

“It’s their one job and they’ve had 100 years to do it.

"This burial project has to stop now and let the land return to the wild, with the war graves honoured by nature".

Farewell to 98-year-old community campaigner

MOVING TRIBUTES have been paid to a well-known “inspirational” campaigner who has passed away aged 98.

In his professional life, Tony Farsky, 98, was a head teacher of a Dulwich school – but he was best known in the community for his activism both for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and for pensioner’s causes.

The tireless campaigner, of Champion Hill, was admitted to King’s College hospital on October 24 with a chest infection and seemed to be responding well to treatment.

However he took a turn for the worse

and passed away in his sleep on October 31.

He was a supporter of the Communist Party and often fundraised for the Morning Star, an affiliated newspaper, although he joined the Labour Party.

The activist also helped set up Southwark Pensioners’ Action Group, which helps lobby on issues affecting older people in the borough.

Tom White, of Southwark Pensioner’s Action Group (SPAG) said: “He inspired everybody, that’s how much of an inspiration he was.

“I was devastated and really shocked.

Every day of my life I consulted him or talked to him. He was just a great man.

“He would campaign on the behalf of anyone who was vulnerable.

“For SPAG I feel it’s our duty to make sure that all he started goes on.”

Carolyn Jones, 58, a close friend who is organising the funeral, said: “He was a very knowledgeable and inspiring person.

“I learnt a lot from him because he had done so much himself. It wasn’t all theoretical, Tony was an organiser.”

Tony was also a keen jazz musician, and would play piano alongside Caroline – who played the flute – for fundraising causes.

Mr Farksy’s funeral is on November 30 at 12:30pm at West Norwood Crematorium.

No flowers but donations to the Southwark Pensioners’ Action Group (SPAG) or to the Morning Star newspaper are encouraged.

Mr Djelal was stabbed to death in front of children playing in Southwark Park at around 2pm on October 31.

Officers in the case have since seized the CCTV of the Surrey Quays Tesco, a source told the News last week.

The suspect was pictured on CCTV footage captured by the park’s café carrying a Tesco shopping bag as he strolled out of the park following the daylight murder.

However, a Met Police spokesperson told the paper that no updates could be confirmed at the moment and that inquiries were continuing. Police last Wednesday (November 7) re-visited the park and launched a fresh appeal for witnesses in a bid to catch the killer. Police believe the suspect left the park by Gomm Road at around 2:00pm before turning onto Lower Road, passing in front of the Seven Islands Leisure Centre and then towards the roundabout close to the Rotherhithe tunnel.

The killer is thought to be a white male around 20-35 years old and is seen in the footage wearing black clothes, with his hood up, a bright hi-vis jacket and lighter-coloured shoes.

Two charged with Malcolm’s murder

A SECOND teenager has been charged with murder after a teenager from Peckham was knifed to death outside Clapham South tube station.

Malcolm Mide-Madariola died in hospital on Friday, November 2, after being found stabbed in Balham Hill, near to Clapham South underground station the same afternoon.

Treynae Campbell, aged eighteen from Longfield Crescent in Sydenham was charged last Thursday, November 8, with murder. He appeared at the Old Bailey on Monday.

Police have made two other arrests in the case.

Another eighteen-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder on Monday, November 5, and bailed until a date in late November.

A 17-year-old boy has also been arrested on suspicion of murder. He appeared in custody at the Old Bailey on Friday, 9 November.

Colleges strike is called off

STAFF AT Lewisham and Southwark colleges resolved their long-running pay dispute with the administration on Friday.

The staff union, UCU, had called a two-day walkout in September over the pay row and had earlier organised a two-day strike in May. Now staff will receive a £350 pay rise and the college’s parent company, NCG, has said it will rethink its strike pay deductions.

Previously NCG originally deducted 1/260th in strike pay but has now agreed to take 1/365th in future and repay the difference on previous deductions.

Chris Payne, interim chief executive of NCG, said: “We’re pleased to have found a solution to this issue and we’re committed to further developing the long term relationship with our trade union

partners.”

Both sides also committed to reviewing incremental pay increases for staff. Employees of other colleges owned by NCG across the country receive the increases, while those in London do not.

UCU regional official Iain Owens said: “UCU members at Lewisham and Southwark colleges have accepted the new package on offer and we now want to work with NCG to get them onto the pay progression system enjoyed by NCG employees elsewhere in the country.”

In September Lewisham and Southwark College announced their intent to split into two separate institutions only six years after they merged.

Joe Docherty, the then Chief Executive of NCG, said the split would “allow the newly established colleges to develop curriculum programmes that better meet the needs of the communities they serve.”

Bin men threaten to strike over sick leave

SOUTHWARK’S REFUSE collectors could go on strike, after being balloted by the union GMB last week in a dispute over sickness policy changes.

The union has slammed Veolia, the contractor responsible for managing Southwark’s waste collection, saying the ‘draconian’ sickness policy makes it easier to dismiss staff over short absences.

Balloting for a strike went live on Wednesday 7 and the decision whether or not to strike will be announced on Wednesday 21.

However Veolia told the News it was disappointed by the union’s campaign against the changes, saying it had tried to collaborate with GMB representatives over the policy change earlier this year.

Nadine Houghton, a GMB Regional Organiser, said: "Our members are up in arms about these changes. They make it far easier for staff to be dismissed for a

“For manual workers, working in challenging conditions, this is unacceptable and creates a culture of fear and intimidation creating a system that is open to abuse by local management,” said the union in a statement.

Approached by the News, a Veolia spokesperson said: “Veolia has met with the GMB nationally to discuss further and has requested the support of ACAS in order to bring matters to a conclusion.

ON SUNDAY across Southwark people gathered to mark 100 years since the guns stop firing on the Western Front and peace was announced ending the First World War.

As well as the traditional gatherings there were groups hosting an array of activities and creating installations to mark the centenary.

At the Compass School in Bermondsey, pupils met a 96-year-old World War Two veteran, Albert Wiltshire, and also had the opportunity to hear about the lives of one of the local young men who went to his death in the First World War - Private William Hoare - and read his letters.

Many schools crafted beautiful displays to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Redriff Primary school created a garden of remembrance as its pupils learned more about what life was like in 1918, Herne Hill School’s spectacular poppy tribute was handmade by children aged two to seven.

At Blackheath High the girls made a poppy field of their own, inspired by John McRae’s In Flanders Fields. Names of lost family members were inscribed on individual acrylic petals.

Children also attended many of the commemorative services and minute’s silence events across the borough, including at Bermondsey’s Albert McKenzie VC memorial statue, which was attended by youngsters from Boucher Primary School.

Community groups came together across the borough and remember and – in some cases – for the first time compile a full list of their war dead.

In Herne Hill, volunteers came together with the help of some Heritage Lottery funding to record for the first time every civilian and service casualty from 1914-18.

The Walworth Society and local historian Neil Crossfield built a replica of one of the original but lost street shrines commemorating their fallen.

Nearby St Peter’s church installed a carved, painted and guilt Royal Coat of Arms after starting fundraising for the project in 2012.

It was unveiled on Sunday by former mayor and current councillor Lorraine Lauder MBE, who placed a remembrance wreath.

The parish church also has two ‘There Not There’ sculpture outlines from the Royal British Legion, representing those fallen but never forgotten.

And on Armistice Day London’s black cabs gave free travel for war veterans, so they could attend remembrance services on the Armistice. Bermondsey based London Cab Drivers’ Club, the trade body for London Cabs shared their photos with us.

Two dead after falling from block of flats named by police PECKHAM

A MAN and woman who fell to their deaths from a block of flats in Peckham have been named by police.

Emergency services were called at 11.44pm on Friday, November 2, to reports of a man and woman injured after falling from a block of flats in Marchwood Close.

Paramedics and officers gave first aid but they both died before they could be taken to hospital, at 12.30am.

They have been formally identified by police as Renata Poncova and Tony Taylor, both aged 33, who lived together in an eighth floor flat in the

estate off Southampton Way. Police have contacted their next of kin, and a post-mortem held on Wednesday (November 7) confirmed they had multiple injuries 'consistent with having fallen from height'.

Police say their deaths are being treated as suspicious, but officers are not looking for suspects as part of their investigation.

Detective Inspector Phil Coster said: “I am appealing for anyone who knew Renata Poncova and Tony Taylor, and had contact with them in the days before their deaths, to call police.

“I also need to speak with anyone who either witnessed the incident or saw anything suspicious either during on leading up to the deaths.

A MAN who helped evacuate babies and children during last week’s Aylesbury Estate fire has told of the dramatic moment smoke started billowing up to the twelfth floor of the building.

Dylan Dawson, aged 24, from Peckham was visiting a cousin who lives in Wendover block on Wednesday, November 7, when the fire began and smoke rapidly filled the building.

He told the News he was on the twelfth floor with another family member when the blaze started: “We could smell smoke, like someone was having a bonfire.

“At first it wasn’t that bad, it almost looked like quite a lot of people were outside smoking but then within ten minutes smoke was everywhere and we were banging on doors and had got down to the fourth floor before seeing any emergency response.

“I was running with babies in my arms, shouting through letter boxes to get people out.

“There was a pregnant woman and I

had to kick her door down to help get her and her young child out.

“I can’t stop thinking about it. There was just smoke billowing everywhere.”

Dylan says it took around an hour to get the affected part of the block evacuated.

Although no one was seriously injured, the fire brigade confirmed three children suffering from smoke inhalation were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Dylan says the fire seemed to start in what is meant to be a locked-up car park, and was not far from a boiler room. “Luckily, this time, the Aylesbury Estate never has any heating,” he said.

Speaking to the News the day after, he says he was left shaken up with a bad headache and had been coughing up black phlegm, but otherwise was unharmed.

“It looks like I ate a thousand blackjacks”, he told the News.

Initial reports that the fire started in a bin room have now been contradicted by the fire brigade, which says a car was on fire in a car park off Thurlow Street.

As yet there is no news on the investigation into the cause and

As the News reported this week, witnesses have come forward to say they heard shouting coming from a flat in the block that night.

THREE TOWER blocks on Bermondsey’s Avondale Estate are to be fitted with sprinklers, the City of London Corporation has announced.

The fire is the second in the estate, and specifically in Wendover, since September (front page pictured).

The condemned estate still has many families and vulnerable people living in its remaining blocks that have yet to be demolished, including vulnerable people in temporary accommodation.

Six fire engines and forty firefighters tackled the blaze, with the fire brigade confirming it took nineteen calls after

the fire caused ‘lots of visible smoke’.

The fire was under control by 6.48pm, around two hours after firefighters were first called at 4.59pm.

The City Corporation, which is landlord of the estate, has green-lit plans to install the fire safety measures on the estate’s East, West and Central Point blocks.

A further two social housing complexes in the City of London - Great Arthur House on Golden Lane Petticoat Tower on Middlesex Street – will also get the sprinklers after it was voted through by the body’s Community and Children’s Services committee.

Randall Anderson, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Community & Children’s Services Committee, said: “The safety of our tenants and leaseholders is our number one priority. We want all our residents to be safe and feel safe in their homes.

“We have worked hard to enhance fire safety on our estates, and the installation of the new fire sprinklers will increase the level of protection and reassure residents.”

The installation is expected to start in June and should be finished by the end of 2019.

Around 900 residents are said to be benefiting from the move.

The Corporation runs twelve social housing estates across the City of London and boroughs including Southwark.

It pledged that it will not charge tenants or long-term leaseholders for the cost of installing the sprinklers.

Other fire safety measures announced by the corporation include moving to a yearly Fire Risk Assessment (FRA), installation of new smoke and heat detectors and replacing fire doors.

The news comes on the heels of a fire at the Aylesbury Estate, which is not managed by the City of London Corporation.

Dylan Dawson, first responder to the blaze on Wednesday November 7, has told of the dramatic moment that smoke began billowing up to the twelfth floor.

No-one was seriously injured in the fire, although three children were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Maudsley rated good but inspectors warn that acute care is ‘inadequate’

SOUTH LONDON and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust has been rated ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission’s latest report, but inspectors warn that acute care is ‘inadequate’ in the face of high demand and ‘breaches of fundamental standards of care’.

Overall the NHS Trust, which includes the Denmark Hill-based Maudsley hospital and Bethlem Royal Hospital in Beckenham, was awarded a ‘good’ rating in the report published on October 23.

The inspection was held from July 2 to August 16 of this year, with inspectors saying staff treated patients and carers with ‘kindness and compassion’ and involved them in decisions about their care and treatment.

There were significant improvements since its last inspection in 2015, with areas of both ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ work.

But in terms of safety, the trust still ‘requires improvement’ and its acute adult wards are now classed as ‘inadequate’.

The report summarised: “There had been breaches of fundamental standards of care on the acute inpatient wards, which had not been appropriately escalated to senior leaders in the trust.

“The flow of patients into and out of the acute care pathway was poor. Bed occupancy was above 100 per cent on most of the acute wards. There was not always a bed available for someone who needed one. Some patients were sleeping on couches or in seclusion rooms rather than in a bed. This was unsafe and compromised the dignity of the patients.

“In the previous year there were over 30 incidents of this happening.

“Governance systems had not identified this unacceptable practice, or a few other serious shortfalls such as staff not always carrying out physical health checks on patients after they were administered intra-muscular rapid tranquilisation.This put patients at risk of avoidable harm.”

The trust’s Chief executive Dr Matthew Patrick said: “An overall good rating reflects the care and compassion of our staff who do their best every day, often in difficult circumstances, to improve the mental health of our service users.

“Quality is our number one priority and we are working constantly to improve our care.

“We regard the CQC’s findings as a further opportunity to make positive change and we have submitted comprehensive improvement plans to them regarding the action we are taking as a result of this report.”

SPECIALISTS AT King’s College Hospital are appealing for parents and teachers to look out for signs of severe dental decay - and make sure the child is urgently seen by a dentist.

They say the most common reason children are admitted to hospital for a general anaesthetic is to extract rotten teeth.

In some cases the decay has led to infection so severe that the infection needs to be drained of pus.

As the News reported last week, shockingly, 27 children seen from 201517 needed surgery, under anaesthetic in hospital due to tooth decay and infection so extreme they faced potentially ‘lifethreatening complications’.

Forty per cent of them were already known to social services – showing how in some cases, extreme and long-term tooth decay can indicate wider neglect, or problems at home.

Untreated tooth decay can cause pusfilled abscesses. The infection can spread up into the sinuses and brain and downwards towards the airway.

Dangerous swelling can then lead to breathing problems as the airways in the nose and throat start to narrow.

The report’s authors, Kathy Fan and Marielle Kabban (pictured), say they hope their research raises awareness among health workers and teachers for the signs to look out for, and will help safeguarding teams get involved in cases

which might indicate child neglect.

King’s is a leader in this field, and has already set up a new ‘care pathway’ for treating children who arrive in A&E with severe infections.

Some have never been to the dentist despite dental care for children being free of charge.

The specialists also want parents to not be afraid of coming forward with problems, saying some children are more prone to these types of infections perhaps due to being diabetic or other conditions which can compromise their immune systems.

Dr Fan went on to explain: “We know parents can have difficult, busy lives, with some parents working multiple jobs and having other children to care for.

“We don’t want parents to be concerned about getting their child seen.

The sooner parents seek dental care for their child, the better.

“We want to support families that are struggling to get the help they need.”

They are keen to highlight that where referrals to social services are made, it is with the aim of helping families under pressure.

It is hoped that research into similar cases nationwide could identify children who are at risk of neglect and get care earlier.

Dr Kabban said: “We are talking about children who may have suffered toothache on a regular basis for some time.

“These children sometimes report experiencing toothache for months or even years, making it difficult for them to eat and leading to disturbed sleep.”

MORE THAN 40% of children in some parts of Southwark grow up in poverty, according to stats compiled by the End Child Poverty coalition earlier this year.

The research, undertaken by University of Loughborough academics, reveals that Grange ward, stretching across Bermondsey, had the highest level of child poverty after housing costs at 43.6%.

The wards used are those pre-boundary reform in May this year, meaning some of the wards no longer exist.

Faraday ward had the second highest level of child poverty, with 1,435 of the ward’s kids growing up under the breadline.

In comparison, only 11% of children grow up in poverty in Village ward, in Dulwich.

The data uses ONS data to calculate estimates of child poverty across wards from July to September 2017.

Other areas particularly affected by the issue include Chaucer where 1,160 children were classed as growing up in poverty after housing costs and Livesey ward, where 1,605 children were deemed to be in poverty.

Southwark also has a significant problem with obesity among children, leading to health issues including dental problems.

According to the council’s Healthy Weight Strategy 2016 – 2021, Southwark had the most overweight children in Year 6 of anywhere in the country in 2014/15.

The shocking stat is 5.5% higher than the London average and almost 10% higher than the national average.

Children from low-income families in Rotherhithe, Walworth and Peckham were said to be most affected.

The report also pointed out that certain communities are more affected than others, with children from African and Caribbean families said to be more at risk alongside those who had overweight parents or had families with complex needs.

“Some of these children need not just baby teeth removed but also adult teeth extracted, and would have been in a lot of pain beforehand.

“The paediatric dental service at King’s will accept referrals from dentists, other healthcare providers and teachers who may be worried about a

child suffering dental neglect.

“But the first point of contact for families should be with routine appointments at their family dentist”

A DISABLED pensioner whose parking badge was revoked after Southwark Council told her she had been 'observed mobilising' has shared her joy at getting her blue badge back after the News' intervention.

As we reported last month, 74-yearold Elizabeth Grace was left devastated after finding out her parking badge would not be renewed after expiring in December, and from that point onward she would also have to pay full congestion charge.

A BERMONDSEY mum has joined a national campaign to raise awareness of a little-known condition campaigners believe is responsible for thousands of cases of misdiagnosed autism.

Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associate with Streptococcus, known as PANDAS, and Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Syndrome, known as PANS, are childhood conditions recognised by the World Health Organisation, but until recently have been almost unheard of in the UK. Both are triggered by an auto-immune response, where the body tries to tackle an infection but ends up harming itself rather than just the bacteria or virus.

Their hallmark is an inflammation of the brain, which in turn causes a variety of neuro-psychiatric symptoms which come on suddenly – sometimes within 24-48 hours.

These include OCD, tics, severely restricted eating, separation anxiety and paranoia, urinary frequency, aggression and cognitive changes and overall childhood regression. Approximately 20 per cent of children affected will also experience psychosis - all symptoms which can easily be mistaken for other conditions.

It is estimated just ten per cent of doctors around the country are familiar with the illnesses.

Up until very recently, there have been no NHS treatment guidelines for suspected cases, leading to fears that thousands of children are being misdiagnosed – often with autism - and missing out on appropriate treatment while being given powerful psychiatric drugs they don’t need.

She has had knee replacement surgery and in March of this year had an invasive emergency operation on her stomach, which left her hospitalised for six weeks and in need of carers at home for three months after.

Mrs Grace appealed against the decision and on Monday, October 29, received a letter explaining her blue badge was back and will not expire until 2021. The new badge arrived on Monday, and she delightedly came to the News' office to share her success.

"Thank you to all the staff at Southwark News, and to my MP, Neil Coyle and his office for all their help.

"Having my badge back means that I can park in any bay in most boroughs and it is also valid in Ireland - where I go every year to pay my respects at my husband and my parents’ graves."

Mum’s battle to get a little known condition ‘often misdiagnosed as autism’ recognised

She is backing a 16,000 signaturestrong petition for NHS England to recognise the condition and develop guidelines for doctors to treat it with antiinflammatory drugs and antibiotics.

James, now 26, lives in supported accommodation with full-time carers, after being diagnosed with autism, Tourette’s Syndrome, and non-organic psychosis - among others - as a child following a sharp deterioration in skills and behaviour after being unwell with a high temperature, aged seven.

Cindy told the News: “Once you are diagnosed with autism it is very hard to get out from that umbrella.

“Over the years he has been given psychiatric drugs that have long term effects - and they do not work for my son.”

Cindy says James’ case fits the classic PANS profile, as his symptoms came out of nowhere.

Until 2000, he had developed normally and was well-adjusted at mainstream school.

One day he went to bed with a high temperature and what seemed to be a virus.

Throughout the next few weeks, his condition deteriorated to the point where he was angry and tearful, normal sounds would send him into a rage, and he started hallucinating, stopped speaking, was

extremely fearful and lost most of his previously acquired skills.

His behaviour became so extreme he was taken out of school and after a particularly violent episode at age eight, he was put on strong psychiatric drugs, which she says left him ‘dribbling and incoherent’.

Today he has round-the-clock care.

When Cindy first learnt about PANS and PANDAS, she believed everything fell into place, but getting doctors to consider the condition continues to be an uphill struggle, despite much evidence that it exists.

“I think some doctors have got away with making me feel I am not quite clever enough,” she says.

“Generally the opinion is that I’m just not accepting the diagnosis, even though many of his symptoms do not match with autism – like extreme separation anxiety when I’m not there, chronic joint and muscular pain, numerous tics, food aversion and frequent vomiting.

“I’m on call 24/7 and often the only one who can calm him down.

“You can’t walk on eggshells for eighteen years and it not affect your life.”

The campaign for the NHS to take action, spearheaded by the charity PANS PANDAS UK, is now gathering pace.

The charity has also set up a network of NHS doctors to help promote awareness

across the NHS, with treatment guidelines on their website.

Cindy is hopeful her experience could help other parents.

“I think most of the time my son is tormented”, she says. “It is a bitter pill to swallow that maybe he could have had a normal life.

“If I went to the GP now, all these years later with the same problem, I’m not sure anything would be different.

“That’s why we have to keep on campaigning.

Public came to the aid of stab victim Witness tells the News how she and other helped a teenager being attacked on the New Kent Road

A WITNESS has spoken out about intervening during an apparent knife-point robbery of a teenager on the New Kent Road earlier this month.

Witness Zoë Kennedy was driving along the road on Friday November 2 when she witnesses a group of schoolchildren attempting to attack another with a knife.

She told the News: “I slowed down as I thought they would fall in front of my car. I then realised one of them had a large knife so I stopped.

“I didn’t really know what to do, so I shouted out of the window and beeped my horn.

“I hadn’t realised at this point, but I think the person with the knife who was wearing a face mask was robbing the group of school boys, who were in uniforms.

“One of the boys was defending himself really well, so it wasn’t

immediately clear it was a robbery and not a fight.”

The boys began to disperse after passers-by including Ms Kennedy shouted that they were calling the police.

The boy with the knife ran off in the direction in the direction of Balfour Street, while the attacked boy headed off in the direction of Elephant and Castle, said the bystander.

A police spokesperson told the News that officers were called at 5.28pm and the teenaged victim was rushed to hospital.

The victim’s injuries were deemed non-life-threatening.

Police watchdog to publish report one year on from teen being hospitalised

THE POLICE watchdog has said its investigation is in its “final stages” a year after a Bermondsey teenager suffered serious injuries when he was reportedly pushed off his bike by a Met Police officer.

Terrell Decosta Jones-Burton was hospitalised with severe injuries after it is said he was knocked off his bike by a police officer in Southwark Park Road on November 21 2017 during a stop.

Police have said they suspected the teenager of taking part in a mobile phone bike robbery minutes previously and were attempting to detain him.

However, charges were later dropped against the teen.

The incident went viral on social media under the hashtag ‘JusticeForTerrell’ while the Independent Office for Police Conduct launched an investigation.

One year on, an IOPC spokesperson said: “The investigation is in its final stages and our final report is almost complete.”

The watchdog said it had “collected

and analysed information regarding the initial robbery, interviewed the teenager, obtained witness statements from the public, officers and paramedics and collected and viewed CCTV and body worn camera footage,” during the year-long investigation.

The incident reportedly caused the teen bruising on the brain, lost teeth and broken bones inside his gum.

A fundraiser started by a family friend raised £825 for dental work, physiotherapy and counselling. While a petition started by a family friend collected nearly 35,000 signitures.

In an update in January, Shereen Jones, Terrell’s mother, said: “We continue to fight and all those who had something negative to say and showed prejudice ways of thinking I just want you to know the truth is coming out and we will win.”

The IOPC spokesperson added: “We have also analysed the training provided to officers regarding detaining someone on a bicycle.

“When the final report is complete our conclusions and the rationale will be shared with the Metropolitan Police and interested parties. We shall also publish our findings in due course.”

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has issued a warning for local businesses to check their bins before they are emptied – to prevent rough sleepers sheltering inside from being crushed to death.

Eleven rough sleepers are known to have died in the UK from 2009 to 2011 after being accidentally tipped into waste collection vehicles and crushed to death.

No such deaths have yet been reported in Southwark but a council leaflet on the issue states: “Southwark has the sixth highest number of rough sleepers in London so the likelihood of occurrence is relatively high.”

Businesses most at risk are said to be those with large 660 litre capacity bins, are in areas with high numbers of rough sleepers or businesses that store ‘comfortable’ waste, such as textiles.

Having unlocked bins and being in a low footfall area also increase the risk of serious injuries or death to rough sleepers, the council’s warning on Monday said.

Between July and September 2018, 3,103 people were found sleeping rough in London, a record number, according to statistics from the Combined Homeless and Information Network (CHAIN).

OFFICERS CRASHED their marked traffic police car into a set of traffic lights in Bermondsey this weekend – putting the signals out of action.

The marked police car, which had its blue sirens on, collided into the traffic lights at the junction of Jamaica Road and Southwark Park Road just before 8pm on Saturday.

The crash put the traffic lights at the junction of Jamaica Road and Southwark Park Road out of order, reducing the traffic to one lane. The lights were restored on Monday morning.

A witness told the News: “I was walking by and saw the traffic lights have been damaged at the junction of Southwark Park Road and Jamaica Road.

“I then looked around the corner and

saw a traffic police car with front damaged.”

There were no reported injuries as a result of the traffic light collision, which did not involve any other vehicles.

A Met police spokesperson said: “At around 19:56hrs on Saturday, 10 November, a marked police car collided with a lamppost on Jamaica Road, Southwark.

“No other vehicles were involved and there were no reported injuries.”

It is not the first time a marked police vehicle has been involved in crash on Jamaica Road.

In 2014, a police riot van ‘catapulted’ over a car while using its blue lights on the road, leaving six with minor injuries.

Moped crook crackdown sucess

MOPED-ENABLED crime has nearly halved after a police crackdown, according to new figures released this week.

According to the Met, in Southwark there were 224 moped-enabled crimes from March to August this year, compared to 419 throughout the previous six months. Across London, the same period saw a drop of about a third.

This reduction has been attributed to ‘Operation Venice’ - focused on the organised criminal networks taking part in moped enabled crime - and the efforts of our local police.

Tactics include using light-weight police motorbikes, DNA spray-tagging offenders, and remote-controlled tyre deflators, or PROspike devices, to catch criminals attempting to make a moped getaway.

Officers have also worked with manufacturers and owners to improve safety feature prevent motorbikes and mopeds from being stolen.

Local London Assembly Member, Florence Eshalomi AM, said: “Mopedenabled crime is a shocking and highly visible crime that has blighted our streets for too long.

“It is extremely positive that we are starting to see a significant drop in the number of incidents, and this is down to a sharply focussed campaign from our local police forces.

“The number of offences that are still taking place is a serious cause for concern and this is why we need to ensure that the Met is adequately resourced, so it can continue to intensify its clampdown.

“We cannot afford to take our feet off the pedal when it comes to tackling moped crime. We must do all we can to prevent these brazen and ruthless offenders from getting away with impunity”.

Remembering the sacrifice and risk O

N SUNDAY people across our country and millions over the world fell silent on the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War.

It was a hugely solemn occasion and brought out the best in our community and nation to commemorate the enormous sacrifice made in wartime to protect our values and give us our way of life today.

Locally, we have had strong links to the armed forces for generations. The 22nd and 24th Battalion of the London Regiment were based locally and thousands of local men who joined them to fight in World War One never returned home.

Keyworth Street at the Elephant and Castle is named after Leonard Keyworth, a lance corporal in the 24th Battalion who lost his life in battle and was awarded a Victoria Cross.

The first ever poppy factory was also based in Bermondsey, just off the Old Kent Road and

My grandfather survived the Normandy landings and was involved in the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. It is hard to imagine the horror and human suffering that he witnessed, but the recent rise in antisemitism globally suggests too many fail to condemn such atrocities or acknowledge how they arose.

It is difficult today to imagine a political climate forming that could allow for such crimes to occur, but a recent rise in fascism is apparent.

OING TO the dentist is often something that is put off, but reports on tooth decay that we’ve featured over the last few weeks show this issue needs to be treated with more urgency.

Specialists at King’s College Hospital are appealing for parents and also teachers to look out for signs of severe dental decay. It’s pretty shocking that they’re talking about severe decay in young children.

Those specialists say that the most common reason kids go to hospital for a general anaesthetic is to extract rotten teeth. Childhood obesity is an issue that is spoken about on a national level, and something that affects us locally - 43 per cent of Year 6 children in Southwark are classified as obese or overweight. This level of awareness clearly needs to be raised over tooth decay too.

A fortnight ago we reported that 27 children seen from 2015 to 2017 needed surgery under anaesthetic due to decay and infection so extreme they faced potentially ‘life-threatening complications’.

Specialists are saying parents shouldn’t be worried about coming forward with problems, as some children are more prone to these types of infections. Dr Kathy Fan said: “We don’t want parents to be concerned about getting their child seen. The sooner parents seek dental care for their child, the better.”

So if you’ve been avoiding taking your child to the dentist as life is too busy, take that time and make the appointment, and follow the simple steps for healthy teeth set out on page 10.

WHY WAIT FIFTEEN YEARS TO REMOVE IT?

T’S NOT Southwark Council’s fault that contaminated waste was dumped on war graves in Camberwell Old Cemetery, but it is surprising, to say the least, that it’s been left to lie there for fifteen years.

When David Rodgers went to visit the grave of his wife’s great-grandfather, to pay respects to the soldier who died in the First World War, he was stunned to find a pile of rubble in place of graves. In total, 48 unmarked war graves have been left like this since 2003.

It’s taken a long time to agree the redevelopment of this site, and the plans have proven massively controversial. And in order to remember these fallen heroes, a commemorative plaque was installed in the cemetery.

You have to wonder though why the contaminated waste couldn’t be removed far sooner regardless of eventual plans for redeveloping the site.

NTIBIOTICS ARE wonderful things. Since the 1940s, they have completely transformed medicine; helping us fight infections that would have killed our ancestors – and consequently saving millions of lives.

Not only are they essential for treating serious bacterial infections like meningitis, pneumonia and sepsis, but they also help protect against infections during operations and cancer treatments.

We all need to play our part in helping to keep antibiotics working, so always take your doctor, nurse or healthcare professional’s advice.

They will recommend the best course of action if you’re unwell – and please don’t just expect to be prescribed antibiotics.

In Southwark, healthcare professionals are encouraged to sign-up to become Antibiotic Guardians. This is a pledge to help protect antibiotics for future generations by only prescribing

And it’s not just for health professionals; anyone can be an Antibiotic Guardian. All you need to do is go to www.antibioticguardian.com and choose a simple pledge about how you will make better use of antibiotics and help keep these vital medicines working.

You can also keep yourself and others healthy by washing your hands regularly with soap and warm water, and using a tissue to catch any coughs or sneezes – binning it straight away to kill any germs.

Equally, common health complaints like coughs, colds, tummy bugs or ear infections – which can’t be treated with antibiotics – will normally get better by themselves over time. These are best treated at home with rest and over-the-counter medication. Your pharmacist will be able to help if you need some advice.

Remember, if your symptoms don’t get better after three weeks, they suddenly get worse, you become breathless or have chest pains, call NHS 111 or see your doctor.

Gold ticket for Chocolate Factory A ctress, singer and renowned puppeteer, Louise Gold, first wanted to be a ballet dancer but, she tells me, ‘luckily my mother realised I would be much too tall at 5’ 9”,’ writes Michael Holland...

Louise has lived in and around London all her life and now lives back in East Sheen where she grew up. Her mother was an actress and at the age of 11 she went to the Arts Educational Stage School: ‘I never considered doing anything else but act,’ she says.

But then something happened that took Louise’s acting career in ‘a whole different direction’, she recalls. ‘I got sent to an audition for The Muppet Show by my acting agent. They wanted someone tall, I got the job, they trained me and that was the beginning of my puppeteering career,’ she says matter of factly. This led to working on several series of The Muppet Show, Muppet films, Sesame Street and on to become one of the founders of the legendary Spitting Image show. Modestly she doesn’t consider any of this a ‘big break’. Conversely she claims, ‘Most of the jobs I thought would be big breaks were disasters!’

To balance out being unseen by viewers as she brought various puppets to life, Louise has been a West End regular in some of the most famous musicals, and says she feels ‘incredibly

blessed to be able to go between the two.’ And Ms Gold obviously loves the work that she does, even with the precariousness of never knowing what is on the horizon: ‘I never know what I will do next and that is part of the joy of what I do - It’s scary too. I don’t know any performer who doesn’t think that every job might be their last; I’ve just finished a long puppeteering job and I’m now back in the theatre; I am very, very lucky.’

Her work has also brought her together with other stage icons. She tells of a wonderful lesson learnt from Dame Judy Dench who directed her in a play in Regents Park: ‘She did whatever was necessary to make the show work, including helping paint the set! What I learnt was that the most successful people are the ones who work the hardest!’

And hard work is something that Louise is more than willing to do because she is now rehearsing under the direction of Trevor Nunn for the Menier Chocolate Factory’s Fiddler On The Roof. ‘I am loving rehearsals, the thing I enjoy most about acting is trying to put yourself into other worlds and lives,’ she says excitedly. ‘My father was Jewish and my grandparents came from Russia and Poland, so this story has great resonance for me.’

Louise plays Yente the Matchmaker,

‘an essential part of the community,’ she emphasises before her big finish: ‘Fiddler on the Roof is a wonderful show. It is an absolute classic musical for very good reason. It’s funny, moving and truthful…This story of a community in a state of change really is for everyone, and it has beautiful music.

What’s not to like?’

Brass is bold in its depiction of war WAR WREAKS havoc, bringing in its wake injury, trauma, separation and death. How is it possible to base a musical on such carnage? Benjamin Till manages to do just that in his award winning musical, Brass, writes Carolyn Hart...

Brass uses singing and dancing to great effect. Nearing the front line, soldiers unravel, their song increasingly desperate, their dance tribal. A device that allows us to accompany them as they face a rollercoaster of emotions and to hear Morrie tragically declare, “ I don't fear death - I just hope people know I'm gone”. Harsh subject matter perhaps for a sing song but strangely bearable.

Out of that darkness, light reigns in the form of camaraderie. Whether in the trenches, between women in the munitions factory, within families, or amongst band members, camaraderie is the magic thread keeping the human spirit alive. We are privy to those bonds developing as the men and women endure exceptional circumstances and the musicality lends relief to their suffering.

Brass also celebrates the active role of women during World War One. Singing from the very core, women own their space by giving commanding performances that showcase their versatility as they adapt

to whatever chaos war brings.

Surrender, not being an option, they inform us: “ We’re going to win the war and us women are going to make sure of it", while also recognising the pathos of their munitions work of making shells that will kill men in the enemy’s ranks.

Stripped back sets decked with drab wooden furniture remind us how harsh war is and how fortunate we are.

Soldiers arrange props mechanically like military drills, their actions pivotal in satisfying the relentless demands of war. Sack cloth uniforms, crawling with lice expose the dehumanising conditions and disregard held for the working classes who are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

Hierarchy, class, gender, sexuality and age are thrashed out in this musical giving it an authenticity that is often neglected. Balance such as this encourages empathy.

Brass, musically, exposes the real story - worth seeing.

Not just lashings of ginger beer book reveals ‘the real Enid Blyton’

‘The Real Enid Blyton’ explores life of author who was born in East Dulwich

WHEN MOST people think of Enid Blyton, lashings of ginger beer and fearless mystery solving children may spring to mind.

Blyton’s tales have made her one of most read and loved British children’s authors of all time, writes Christopher Carey...

A new book, The Real Enid Blyton, by author Nadia Cohen explores the life of the author. Blyton was born in East Dulwich on August 11th, 1897, the eldest of three children. At school she excelled at sport and enjoyed popularity among her peers, but her home life was far less rosy.

As a child she adored her father, who encouraged her creative pursuits and curiosity. However, she had a cold and detached relationship with her mother, who referred to her early writing as ‘scribbling’ and a ‘waste of time and money’.

Nadia Cohen’s recent biography explores all aspects of her life, the highs, low and eccentricities.

It shows says hat when she was twelve her father left the family for a woman he had been having an affair with, something which devastated Blyton. Though she maintained contact with her him throughout her life she never attended his funeral, or her mother’s.

This personal turmoil was mirrored in her first marriage to Hugh Pollock, which Cohen says was defined by her adultery, his heavy drinking and an empty indifference towards each other in times of need. Upon the breakup of their marriage Blyton forbade their two daughters from seeing their father, something which may explain the scathing criticism from her daughter Imogen, who later wrote “My mother was arrogant, insecure and without a trace of maternal instinct. Her approach to life was childlike, and she could be spiteful, like a teenager.”

Soon after her divorce, Blyton married Kenneth Waters, one of the men she had been having an affair with.

Cohen claims they enjoyed a relativity happy marriage, and were known to host unorthodox rendezvous at their home, which included the occasional game of naked tennis.

However, the couple never had the child they both wanted, something made all the more painful when Blyton suffered a miscarriage after a fall from a ladder.

In the late 1950s, Blyton’s general health began to deteriorate, and within a few years she began to exhibit

‘’Enid was very careful to only portray a cheery, sunny image of herself, she wanted to be seen as a friend to her army of readers” symptoms of dementia. Upon the death of her husband in 1967, she was left in a vulnerable state and less than a year later was admitted to a nursing home in Hampstead. She died on November 28, 1968, aged 71.

While Blyton’s personal and professional life were very different creatures, her writings also endured some criticism over their perceived

simplicity and the racial and xenophobic overtones contained within. Black and foreign characters were frequently portrayed in a negative light, which led to some revisions by publishers in later editions of her works, most notably the Noddy series.

Despite the controversies, Blyton’s works are enjoying something of a

renaissance, and interest in her life remains strong.

Cohen said: ‘’I was inspired to write this book because I'm fascinated by the idea that a whimsical children's author, adored by millions of kids around the world, actually had a rather dark side which very few people know about. ‘’Enid was very careful to only

portray a cheery, sunny image of herself, she wanted to be seen as a friend to her army of readers. ‘’She remains as popular as ever because she truly understood what children wanted, and still want, to read about.’’

Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that it intends to make the above Temporary Traffic Order under section 14(1)(b) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

The purpose of the Order is, in the interest of public safety, to prohibit loading and unloading by vehicles at any time on both sides of the road in that part of Upper Ground which lies within the London Borough of Southwark and to provide a formal taxi stopping area at an area of kerbside in Upper Ground that has been designated by Transport for London as a taxi rank. Haughney will face Like2Box’s Goodwin on the undercard of the Capital Shakedown bill staged at the Troxy in London on Saturday, November 24.

The 40-year-old Bermondsey man has failed in two prior attempts at the Regional title losing against Lee Cannon and Steve Albone. However, Haughney believes he has worked his way to another shot at the strap.

“I’ve got to be honest with myself, this is my third shot at the title, so I’m a big believer in third time lucky, but I’ve gone into all these title fights thinking I’m going to win," Haughney said.

“This is a massive make-or-break for my future, if I’m honest – because how many chances do you get?

“I’m grateful for the opportunity, I think I’ve earned the opportunity with my performances. I’ve been in with some big-name fighters in the league, so I’m just putting it all together."

The match-up was initially pencilled in for June on the True Grit bill, but Goodwin was forced to pull out of the contest just two weeks before with a broken thumb.

Haughney went on to box and beat Will Murphy on points in a convincing performance in what was his last action in the ring.

Goodwin also fought Murphy, outpointing him in September at the Quest Knockout Tournament.

Haughney, though, reckons he has identified weaknesses in his next opponent.

“Every camp I go into I take positives and negatives from the camp before and the fight before,” Haughney continued.

“I take every fight as it comes. For example, when I boxed Will Murphy I did so much right, but I also made a

SOUTHWARK AQUATICS Swimming Club (SASC) member Teddy Kinsler put in a storming performance at the London Winter Championships, held at the London Aquatic Centre earlier in November.

Competing against swimmers up to the age of sixteen, fourteen-year-old Teddy made it through to the finals of the 50m breaststroke and secured an excellent sixth-place finish, making her the second fastest fourteenyear-old on the day.

The performance meant she also moved up the ASA national rankings to reach number 25 in Great Britain (21 in England) for her age in 50m breaststroke.

Her success means she is now eyeing a

call-up to compete at the invite-only nationals next summer, when the top 24 swimmers in each age group compete in Sheffield.

It’s the culmination of years of dedication and hard work for Teddy, who trains ten hours a week in the pool plus an hour’s land training with SASC. Ultimately, Teddy would like to compete internationally, and puts her success down to the support of her coaches, Tim Beletski and Tim Ayling. “We’re all really proud of Teddy’s success,” SASC chairman John Ferguson-Smith said.

“She’s a real inspiration to the younger swimmers and a great ambassador for the club.”

Our repor ter visits the East Dulwich Tavern for a sense of what the club means to local businesses and why those companies felt such a need to help out in times of trouble AS A reporter covering Dulwich Hamlet, the most common question I receive from friends and colleagues who have only heard of the club from afar is, “why on earth does a non-league club get so much attention?” This is a question that I struggled to comprehend for many years growing up locally, having never paid Champion Hill a visit.

However, Dulwich continue to defy their status in the sixth tier of English football and command a large and devoted following. This extends from die-hard football fans through families on a day out and even to local businesses.

I talked to David, manager of the East Dulwich Tavern, who outlined the sterling efforts his establishment have gone through to support the football club, and why on earth they do so.

The pub has hosted fundraising quizzes and raffles for the club, including one last Thursday which raised £810 for Dulwich’s 12th Man fund. Furthermore, this month the local organised a Dulwich-related ‘Penny for the Guy’

with the proceeds going to the club – involving a palm tree on Goose Green Roundabout (or as it has become known: Promotion Roundabout). Even more appealing to fans may be the introduction of a new Hamlet pale ale, from which ten pence per pint will be donated to the club. Going back to earlier in the year the Tavern became the hub in which Dulwich fans unleashed their creative skills in preparation for the rally at Goose Green. Fans gathered at the pub and put together banners and flyers in preparation for the march to Champion hill.

But why so much effort for a small local football club?

David points out the club’s economic benefits for the local area.

“When Hamlet were playing in East Dulwich hundreds of people would stream through the streets every Saturday,” he says. “Then around lunchtime there was a lull until around 5pm, then at five half of East Dulwich would pile in again. This was obviously brilliant for all the local pubs, bars and

From then on I wanted more than simply to stand behind the bar, I wanted to be a part of it.”

I could hear the excitement building in David’s voice as he recounted the events of the end of last season: “I went on the march – I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. And then there

was promotion – it was chaos! I’ve never seen so much joy on people’s faces. I’m sure you’ve seen the videos of it but they don’t do it justice, what a day!” he exclaimed breathlessly.

So, to answer the question posed at the beginning of this article – “why on earth do they get so much attention?” – Dulwich are excellent value for their media attention and local support. The economic benefit they provide the local area is very important, but their positive impact on the local community is truly priceless.

Dulwich’s recent trials and tribulations have also played their part in its relationship with the local community.

“I’m originally from Kent and I support Gillingham,” David adds. “I became

FIFTY YEARS is a long time but so it was proved last Saturday that so is four minutes in a game of football.

Millwall were within touching distance of a first win at Carrow Road since November, 1968, leading 3-2 with the game ticking into the second of six minutes allocated injury-time.

It had the feeling of a game that was finally the spark Millwall were looking for away from home. It was remarkably similar to Leeds at Elland Road last season, when they initially blew a lead but scored twice late on for a 4-3 win.

Jed Wallace scored the winner then and with seven minutes left had seemed to do the same against a Norwich side that had been top of the table just four minutes earlier.

For all the worry that this season is set to be a long one involving a battle to avoid relegation, had the Lions hung on to that lead they would have had one point more than after the same number of games last season.

So that’s that perspective.

But here’s another one: Before Saturday Millwall had thrown away ten points from winning positions this season. And after the 85th minute of games, they had given up six points.

That raises a few questions. Is it a fitness issue? One of concentration? It’s difficult to know exactly, but what is certain is that in the Championship there are always players of real quality who

make the difference when it most counts.

So in the 92nd minute, Emi Buendia – whose Argentinian surname translates to ‘good day’ – was perhaps the only player on the pitch who saw the opportunity to squeeze the ball past five Millwall players to substitute Jordan Rhodes, who took one touch to set up a low finish past Ben Amos. There’s a reason Rhodes has been transferred for multi-million pound fees three times in his career, and the fact he was only on the bench shows how strong Norwich are.

That’s also where perspective is needed. This is what Millwall are up against in this division. Norwich raised almost £40million in the summer selling James Maddison and Josh Murphy, and on players like Buendia they have spent it wisely.

In the first half, too, Millwall had made the hosts look ordinary, certainly not a team aiming to go top.

Millwall deservedly led at the break.

Tom Elliott is so much more aggressive this season and when Jake Cooper headed back across goal the striker attacked the ball as if a starving predator devouring its prey.

Millwall were in control then, and that’s what made what came later so unexpected.

Daniel Farke’s Canaries stepped it up immediately after the break, Onel Hernandez was far more prominent on the left wing. He fed Marco Stiepermann four minutes after halftime and his low cross was emphatically

dispatched inside Amos’ near post by Teemu Pukki.

Amos must feel like nearly everything is getting past him at the moment, but he could do little for Norwich’s three goals. He had kept the score at 1-1 when he saved Pukki’s penalty after Murray Wallace had been penalised for handball. It was the fourth penalty in all competitions that Amos has saved this season.

The game headed into the last eleven minutes with little sign of the chaos to come, though both sides did seem to sense vulnerability in the other’s defence.

In the 79th minute, Norwich committed eight players within 30 yards of Millwall’s goal, but the visitors had nine outfield players back. One of them, Ryan Leonard, cut out a cross. It fell to Moritz Leitner 25 yards out and he curled the ball with the outside of his right boot inside Amos’ right-hand post.

But Millwall responded almost immediately, substitute Steve Morison heading on and Lee Gregory putting Jamal Lewis under pressure. Leonard read it perfectly, pouncing on the loose ball to poke past Tim Krul.

Ex-Newcastle stopper Krul them seemed to embody Norwich’s meltdown, as he threw the ball straight to Wallace 40 yards out. The winger doesn’t need much invitation to inject forward thrust into an attack, and he played a neat one-two with Morison before finishing past Krul.

experience on the pitch to shut down the game and see it out for their first away win since April 10.

Extra defensive ballast was added when Neil Harris sent on Ryan Tunnicliffe for Shane Ferguson in the 88th minute and James Meredith for Gregory a minute later.

But then Buendia provided that exquisite pass and minutes later Millwall had a corner as they looked for the winner. The cautious thing to do would have been to play it short and protect the point. Harris was asked later if that should have been the option chosen rather than crossing, but he said his side had one of the best attacking set-piece records in the division so why not go for it.

Norwich cleared and then had another lock picker in Mario Vrancic, the Bosnia and Herzegovina midfielder who had come on in the 88th minute.

He threaded a ball through to Pukki and there was an element of bad luck in how Shaun Hutchinson slid in but the ball came off the boot of the Norwich striker and flicked over Amos.

The Carrow Road curse had struck again.

Rob Harvey scores his first Millwall goal in their 3-2 Professional Development League defeat to Colchester

MILLWALL COULD have the next Jed Wallace in their ranks – and Rob Harvey is determined to learn from the best.

Harvey – who turned 19 last Wednesday – was signed from Isthmian League Premier Division side Brightlingsea in the summer, and has become a regular for Kevin Nugent’s under-23s this season.

Lions boss Neil Harris often invites players from that squad to join in senior training. It is a chance to impress the senior manager, and also to pick the brains of some of the senior players.

Harvey may have come from the seventh tier of English football, but he never feels any fear when he joins players with international and top-flight experience. As well as Wallace, he has found Aiden O’Brien very helpful, and enjoys his battles against James Meredith.

“It’s probably about three times a fortnight on average. Sometimes you go individually, sometimes as a unit. You go in different phases as and when required,” Harvey told the News.

“I went over once on my own. It’s a nice environment and they’re all very professional and encouraging. It’s good to be involved, it’s much quicker and I’ve got to get used to that.

“Sometimes it’s games, sometimes full training, there could be someone out, shape play.

“I’ve played against Mezza a few times.

“It’s good to speak to people in my position. Jed’s on fire this season and I like having a good chat with him. Anyone is happy to speak to you, no one would shut you out.

“I speak to Aiden quite a bit and he’s good with out-of-possession advice. Nuge told me to speak to him, but he came over just to speak to me about the transition (when a team wins back the ball or loses it). If I wanted to speak to Jed about anything or any of the pros they are more than happy to help you.

“Because I had been injured I worked really hard in the off-season, I knew what I had to get ready for.

“I kept speaking to Kevin Nugent. The gaffer [Harris] spoke to me a few times. He asked me what my plans were if I wasn’t going to get here, what I had been planning to do before this was an option.

“I was going to continue with Brightlingsea and look into an apprenticeship. Business Management was one of a few things I was looking at.

“When you speak to them you can work out little things on and off the ball to give you a bit of an edge, for example, over a full-back.”

Harvey was on the radar of Millwall’s head of recruitment Alex Aldridge for some time, before eventually being invited in for a trial last season.

However, his dream was almost snatched away from him.

Harvey explains: “It was February and I came in and got injured. I was still playing for Brightlingsea at the time, but Millwall were really good the whole way through my recovery. They were in touch to see how I was doing.

“I came back right at the end of the season and we played Bromley, and they were very strong. It was mostly a team of trialists so there wasn’t a lot Millwall could

After two weeks of that trial, a group of nervous youngsters were summoned to a dressing room at the training ground, adjacent to another room where Nugent was delivering good news and bad.

“Brightlingsea were speaking to Alex Aldridge and a few other people involved,” Harvey continues. “I got called in after about two weeks and Kev said they wanted to offer me something.

“I remember just before going in there were a few of us getting called in one by one. It didn’t look like there were many of them being offered deals. I remember going in and Kev had a bit of a smile on his face. I didn’t know if that was because he had given out all the good news. He just said they wanted to make an offer. It was a

dream come true, really, it took a long time to sink in.

“I called mum and dad straightaway, they were very proud. My mum was funny, I had to tell her about four times before it sunk in for her. I called a few of my mates as well. It was a nice experience.”

Harvey was given a one-year professional deal with an option for Millwall of another twelve months.

“They just said it was a great opportunity, if it didn’t go well it was a good experience, because pre-season had been with the first team quite a bit as well,” Harvey says.

“They just said, ‘give it all you’ve got, you’re there for a reason and we’ll support you through the whole thing.’

“I finished my last exam about four days before the start of pre-season. I knew that if it didn’t work out I needed something. I had to work hard for the exams. Mum was very hot on it, we had many arguments!

But it was all worth it because I got the results and I got here as well, but I had the back-up if it was needed.

“There were no guarantees here even though they were really good and seemed interested.”

Harvey’s signing has also gained Millwall a few more supporters.

Harvey says: “Everyone was just excited that I was playing and everyone has become a Millwall fan that I know. No one really questioned it, and they now follow them, checking the results so I’ll get a text if we lose or win.

“A few people were curious what the

atmosphere was like but no one was against it.

“I go to all the home games and then we review them afterwards, spending time analysing what happens out of possession.

That’s one of the main things to get used to, 4-4-2, and now I kind of know the position and I want to be as effective as possible.

You can learn a lot off Jed and Jiri [Skalak], they’re both really smart players on the ball and they’ve got great delivery.

“I thought I was fit when I came here – I wasn’t! I could have been better with diet but now I eat my breakfast and lunch here and have dinner at digs, so I’m very much influenced in what I eat. We’ve also got the dietician who comes in and helps us.”

Harvey is a Liverpool fan whose favourite players growing up were Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres. He is at the beginning of what he hopes is a long career in professional football, and he certainly seems to have his head screwed on and knows what it takes to keep the dream going.

“I spend extra time on crossing, finishing, free-kicks. I didn’t used to take dead balls before but I’ve got the time and the perfect facilities to practise. I like to do extra crossing, extra shooting to give me that edge on match-day.

“I presume it’s just down to the management [over an extension]. I’m just focussing on now and working hard trying to get the results now and improve myself.

I’ve learnt a lot already and it’s only been three months. If I can keep learning and keep improving, get a few more goals, keep getting crosses in, if you’re doing all that well then you kind of give them a difficult decision to not give you a deal.

“Hopefully I’ll hear sooner rather than later.”

‘My time will come’ says Fred

FRED ONYEDINMA still believes his “time will come” at Millwall as he continues to enjoy a productive loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers.

Onyedinma, who turns 22 on November 24, has played fifteen times this season and scored twice, as part of an attack that includes former Lions Paris Cowan-Hall and Adebayo Akinfenwa.

Wycombe are fifteenth in League One after promotion last season. Onyedinma was with Wycombe on loan in the 201415 season when he scored eight goals in 25 games.

Onyedinma revealed he told Neil Harris during the summer that he wanted a move.

“I knew that I wanted to go on loan after last season,” Onyedinma said. “I wanted to get games because that’s the only way you feel you improve and find your feet.

It’s something I wanted to do for a long time.

“I spoke to the manager, I told him that I wanted to go on loan. He wanted me to stay, which was good because it felt like I was important to the team. But he understood as well because I’m still young and want to get games. Unfortunately I didn’t get as many games as I would have liked last season.

Fred Onyedinma knew at the end of last season he had to leave Millwall for first-team football

“It’s something that he looked at and he allowed me the opportunity to go.

“From what I know there were a few clubs interested. I was at Wycombe before and did well, so I knew what I was going to get. Wycombe is a proper family club like Millwall. I just needed time to find my feet and continue my development.

“It has been a bit up and down. They just got promoted so the manager and players are still learning each game. We found something that worked and how we could improve, and we know that with the players we have we know we can do something in League One. “It’s about being patient and finding your form and keeping going.”

Onyedinma has played on both wings for Gareth Ainsworth’s side, in two main formations, and a strike in October in a 32 win against Scunthorpe was League One goal of the month.

He admitted being part of a front three gives him more freedom.

“It does, but recently we have played 44-2 as well. I’ve played on the left side.

Sometimes I’ll play on the left, sometimes on the right. I’ve been most effective on the left because that’s where I scored my goals from,” Onyedinma said.

“It was quite nice to get my first goal.

When you start scoring and are in form, you always produce good things. It’s always going to be the aim as an attacker to get goals and assists. I know I can do it,

I just have to be persistent and the goals will come. “[Ainsworth] tells me to always think about the end product. He tells me to express myself and emphasises end product, whether that’s a shot on goal or a cross.

“There is no pressure because we’ve got so many attackers that can score.”

One of those is 36-year-old Akinfenwa, who played nine times for Millwall in 2007-08.

Onyedinma said: “He’s someone I look up to. He has a lot of time for everyone and he’s a big character, you see that immediately. He’ll help you out, motivate

“The weather was absolutely perfect. I was scared about my knees giving way like they did at the Royal Parks Half in Hyde Park where I spent some time in the medical tent. But I got through the pain and even walked some of the race when the pain was too much to run. I got there through sheer fight and determination which I didn’t know I had.

“Usually I use an app that gives me the time I’m running but I didn’t use it this time, I just went with my own feel of the race, going faster when the crowds were there and slowing down when it was quiet to regain composure.

“It was a personal battle for the last three miles but after I had got to mile fifteen I knew it was happening no matter how long it took.

“I had started off a bit steady, but felt like I hadn’t run beforehand for an eternity. As soon as I reached Brooklyn the crowd was

immense – music, people handing out water and cheering us on.”

Dave had made sure to appropriately sound-track his race.

He added: “The views across the bridges were breath-taking and unforgettable with the sun beginning to set.

Moving into one borough at a time with a popular New York repertoire – Notorious B.I.G, Alicia Keys, SaltN-Pepa – really gave me goosebumps.

“Crossing the finish line is probably my favourite moment of all time. I’m more than tempted to come back to do the half-marathon in March. Bring on London!”

“When he was growing up everyone thought he was too big, that he couldn’t get around the pitch. But he always defies people and he’s still doing it. He gives his all every time.

“I’ve known Paris for some time. When he was at Millwall he didn’t play much but I trained with him and when you have a good understanding you’re going to link up better on the pitch.”

Onyedinma’s loan ends on January 1 but he is keen to keep playing. Although he has played 151 times for Millwall he has often struggled for a consistent run of form. It looked like his real breakout season would be 2016-17 when he caught the attention of Premier League sides as Millwall reached the FA Cup quarterfinals.

“I believe in timing and everything happens for a reason,” Onyedinma said.

“When I was linked with clubs I didn’t get carried away. I wanted to keep my head down and keep working.

“You have to do that and then your time will come.”

A MILLWALL fan flew the flag of his beloved club in New York City after a “mentally draining” but “breathtaking” marathon experience earlier this month.

Bermondsey’s Dave Elson, 25, completed the iconic race through the dramatic cityscapes in an effort to hit a target of raising £4,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“I can’t put into words about the race,” Dave told the News. “It was such an amazing experience: mentally draining at times, adrenalin rushes at times, painful.

“The people of New York kept me going, kept pushing me and urging me on.

A New York-based Millwall fan met me at the last half-mile and that for me was incredible. The best day of my life.

A SEASON-ending injury for Tom Bradshaw is set to change Millwall’s transfer plans in January.

Bradshaw, 26, had surgery this week on a torn ACL in his knee, an injury he suffered against Brentford on November 3 and with a recovery time generally of between six and nine months.

The injury is similar to the one that ended Byron Webster’s season in September 2017. Centre-back Webster returned to full training in the last week of the season in May. He didn’t make a competitive senior appearance in almost

eleven months, though that included the closed season.

Millwall hope Bradshaw will be available to start pre-season training next June, which would be around seven months after his operation.

Bradshaw joined Millwall on a clubrecord deal from Barnsley in August and made ten appearances this season, though only two were starts.

Millwall boss Neil Harris now has three senior strikers and his current first-team squad has been reduced to 21.

It remains to be seen if this changes the situation with Fred Onyedinma, who is on loan with Wycombe until January 1, but who has hinted he would be open to

extending that arrangement to continue playing regularly. If he returns to Millwall he will be fourth-choice striker, a position he is not willing to accept.

Harris also has the option of using Aiden O’Brien up front. He scored on his Republic of Ireland debut playing as a lone striker against Poland in September.

Millwall have yet to sign a player on a permanent deal in January since Harris has been boss, so the loan and free-agent markets are likely to be scoured for a forward. The current list of free transfers includes the likes of Darren Bent, but Harris will be careful not to upset the unity of the squad or the balance of his forward line. If Millwall do try to recruit a striker

in January, it will be someone to play off a target man.

Ironically, it was only last month that Harris said he didn’t expect much movement in January, but warned it was “early days”. He added: “January for the last three years has been tough. The summer window was by far the toughest one for me in my time in charge.

“Do I expect January to be easier? Well I hope so. But no I don’t expect it to be easy because it’s always a difficult window.”

Bradshaw’s injury has added another degree of difficulty, with the Lions now desperately in need of back-up for Lee Gregory.

Archer last played for the Lions on August 26 against Rotherham before he was dropped for the next game at home to Swansea.

Despite not being injured, Archer wasn’t on the bench for that game, and was also left out of the next four match-day squads. He returned to the bench in place of David Martin for the 3-2 defeat to Sheffield United on September 29.

Archer, 25, has been sharing under-23 duties with Martin, who went off injured in their game against Crystal Palace last week.

Amos, 28, is on loan from Bolton Wanderers for the season. Millwall face Phil Parkinson’s side at The Den on November 24, but under the terms of the deal Amos cannot play against his parent club.

That is likely to mean a return for Archer. If Martin is sidelined, Millwall will then be left relying on either Ryan Sandford or Joe Wright as back-up on the bench.
