BREXIT: SOUTHWARK HOSPITALS PAY EU WORKERS SETTLEMENT FEES TO AVOID STAFFING CRISIS

HOSPITALS IN Southwark are to pay for their EU workers’ ‘settled status’ applications in a bid to avoid them leaving the NHS during Brexit.

The ‘Settled status’ gives EU citizens permission to stay in the UK for as long as they like and allows them to apply for British citizenship.

The scheme will formally open

by March 2019, but EU citizens working in the NHS are able to apply for the status from the end of November.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust and King’s College NHS Trust are among those who will reimburse staff for the cost of their applications.

The application costs £65 for those aged 16 and over.

Approached by the News, a spokesperson from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust said: “We have around 2,000 EU staff, including over 750 nurses and midwives.

“This is the right thing to do for our EU staff who are a vital part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ and is also a cost effective way to support staff retention.

“Like all our staff, EU colleagues are valued members of our team who make an enormous contribution to the services we provide every day.”

King’s College NHS Trust also confirmed to the News that it would pay for the EU settlement charge for its ‘substantive’ EU workers.

A spokesperson for the Trust said: “Our EU colleagues are an essential part of Team King’s and make a substantial contribution

As the paper reported last month, Southwark’s hospitals are among those most prone to a Brexit impact on staffing.

Data obtained by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, and shared with the News, revealed that fifteen percent of Guy’s and St Thomas’ frontline staff are

from the EU. The figure rises to almost one in every five for midwives at Guys’ and St Thomas’ being from the EU – raising fears about the possible effect of a No Deal Brexit on midwifery provision.

The statistic means the Trust has the third highest level of EU midwives in London.

12.5% of King’s College NHS Trust frontline staff are also from the European Union.

REPRESENTATIVES FROM Southwark Council have joined councillors from Lambeth and Lewisham to raise concerns on the impact of Brexit within their boroughs and lobby for a local voice in negotiations with the bloc.

Councillor Victoria Mills (pictured) said: “Local authorities will be significantly affected by Brexit, as will many of our residents, and so we are using this as an opportunity to strongly make our case to the government that more clarity is urgently needed and that councils need to be directly involved in the Brexit process.

"It is clear that local government’s voice has been markedly absent from the Brexit negotiations and this is a vital opportunity to make a compelling case for consideration of our services during the Brexit process and discuss funding, legislation and regulation concerns.”

Cllr Mills is the first local authority cabinet member to have a Brexit portfolio.

The cabinet member for finance, performance and Brexit has held three Brexit panel discussions for Southwark since the referendum, hearing evidence from businesses, organisations and individuals across the borough, as well as national experts.

This week, on Tuesday October 30, the three south London councils met as part of the Local Government Association's Regional Sounding Board, chaired by Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, Neil Coyle.

"Since the referendum there has been a marked increase in hostile behaviour towards immigrants and an unpleasant and dangerous increase in nationalism and xenophobic attitudes - this needs to be addressed urgently.

SWEDES LOOK TO PL AN BREXIT STREET PART Y WHETHER YOU’RE drowning your sorrows or toasting in jubilation, Brexit is likely to drive many of us to a drink or two.

But one group of London-based Swedes has decided to go one step further – and host a potential street party for the ‘UK’s Leaving Drinks’ in Bermondsey.

The event, which will take place on March 29, the day the UK is due to leave the European Union, has nearly 1,500 attendees pledging to go – and a further 7,600 people who say they’re ‘interested.’

Charlotte Ågren, founder of londonswedes.com, an online community for London’s Swedish community which is organising the event, said: “Since 2016 there’s been lots

of conversations within the group [about Brexit] but it’s often been quite negative comments, so it’s always quite serious discussions.

“But we’re not that kind of group, so we just thought we wanted to do an event where you just get together and have fun.

“We just wanted to make something fun about it. It’s also trying to show that we’re a big Swedish community in the UK and we’re not going anywhere.”

Initially the group had planned drinks in London Calling Sweden, a beer taproom on Bermondsey’s Enid Street – but the number of interested people have outgrown the venue, meaning it is now considering asking the council for

permission to have a street party instead.

An alternative proposal would be to open the bar’s space into a neighbouring brewery to allow those who are interested to attend.

Ms Ågren, who is 31 and lives in west London, told the News that reaction to the event had been positive, saying that “most people think it’s a fun idea.”

LondonSwedes are not the only Facebook group to organise a UK Leaving Drinks event to mark Brexit day.

Another event along similar lines appears to have 40,000 people interested – but is not actually linked to a real-world location.

Reports of two deaths Four charged after ambulance was ‘after falling from 10th vandalised during the World Cup floor of block of flats‘ CAMBERWELL

PARAMEDICS WERE called to the scene of a double death on Southampton Way on Friday, the ambulance service has confirmed.

Over the weekend, the News received multiple unconfirmed reports of an alleged fight leading to two people falling from a tenth floor flat in Marchwood House, SE5.

However, a London Ambulance Spokesperson could only confirm paramedics had been called to ‘reports of an incident’ on Friday.

It is understood that the two people died before being taken to hospital.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 11:48pm on Friday, November 2 to Marchwood Close, SE5, to reports of an incident.

“We sent an incident response officer, an advanced paramedic, three single responders in cars and two ambulances.

“We also dispatched a response car from London’s Air Ambulance.

“Sadly, despite the efforts of our medics, two people died at the scene.”

Man dies after shooting WALWORTH

A 48-YEAR-OLD man rushed to hospital in a critical condition with gunshot injuries last week has died, police have confirmed.

Officers were called by paramedics at 12.20pm on Wednesday, October 31, to reports of an injured man at an address at Cuxton House in Mina Road, Walworth, where they found a 48-year-old man with a gunshot injury.

Police say no one has been arrested in connection with the death and enquiries are on-going.

Pictures of the trashed ambulance sparked social media outrage and the damage on July 7 forced the emergency vehicle out of service.

The four people charged on Tuesday October 16 were: Perry Kangyue Jian, 26 of Poplar, Larissa Bell, 21 of East Kilbride, Glasgow, James Elton, 27 of West Hampstead and Scott Dennett, 25 of Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire.

All of them had been previously interviewed under caution.

‘More dedicated ward officers, no cuts to the gang unit and an increase in 999 emergency response teams’ EXCLUSIVE

SOUTHWARK’S TOP police officer has poured water on claims the merger between Southwark and Lambeth police is hindering officers’ ability to tackle a surge in serious violence – and says just one officer has lost their job in the reshuffle.

Speaking on Monday at his Brixton police station base, Simon Messinger, the Met’s central south commander, told the News that there had been no jobs lost as part of the merger, except the role of Lambeth Borough commander.

“Superintendents are all the same, and Peckham will stay as Southwark’s

patrol base and Brixton for Lambeth, so no change there,” he said.

“Much of that uniformed, visible presence will remain exactly the same.

The actual date go ‘live’ is January 23.”

He confirmed that response teams will be bigger, to deal with ‘low level’ crime, for example shoplifters, and crimes without weapons, as well as 999 calls.

These officers expected to arrest, interview, take them to court – with Messinger saying this was part of making sure ‘cops are cops’. He also confirmed there would be no loss of covert or proactive officers working in the gangs team.

According to his team, there are actually more dedicated ward officers now than last year due to boundary changes by the local authority – meaning two new wards with their own dedicated officers.

heads up Southwark’s safer neighbourhood team officers, said there was a renewed focus on safeguarding work to prevent young people being drawn into crime with more officers drafted in as part of the merger.

“It has been made known that that Southwark and Lambeth lost around 250 officers in the last two years.

“There are some fundamental things about why are we are doing this and one of the elements is to invest in key areas such as youth diversion – there’s an uplift in schools and youth engagement officers.

“Each of the senior schools will have a named officer - sometimes exclusively or officers sharing two or three schools - and on top of that we will start working more with junior schools, making sure we are building those relationships and that comes into a wider safeguarding piece to identify

individuals who may be at risk and support other agencies to help them get the support they need.

“A lot of what we are going to be doing is already in existence - what we are talking about is scope the ability to cover more ground and particularly having more of a reach to younger children and schools.

Superintendent Annmarie Cowley said the police were in talks with both councils how a public health approach could work across both boroughs: “We haven’t got what is called a public health approach per se, but those conversations with Lambeth and

Southwark are taking place to see what that means going forward.

Cowley also said that there were now more dedicated ward officers since boundary changes earlier this year created two new wards – with each one having dedicated officers and PCSOs. Figures gained by the News from a freedom of information request show that in the last four years Southwark’s safer neighbourhood team strength has been cut from a peak of 218 in 2014, to 121 at the end of September this year.

At the end of December 2017, there were 141 officers in ‘neighbourhood policing roles’.

Increased calls for a ‘public health’ approach to tackle the continuing rise in knife crime

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, school exclusions and ‘adverse early childhood experiences’ are some of the factors behind serious youth violence, says a new council report that recommends Southwark adopts a ‘public health’ approach to tackling knife crime.

As the News has reported, knife crime and gang-related violence is increasingly seen by the government, doctors, academics and social workers as a crisis which goes beyond pure law enforcement – with activists in Southwark calling for this approach to be taken up in our area after it was successful in Glasgow.

At a meeting on Monday, September 3, the council’s scrutiny committee heard that there needs to be ‘a better service for those who are trying to leave a criminal lifestyle’, including prison-leavers, more services and support operating outside 9-5 weekday hours, and a plan to support children who have mental health problems or have experienced trauma – and intervene much earlier to stop a cycle of violence into adulthood.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety and public health told the News: “The ‘Knife Crime Review’ was the result of a ‘scrutiny in a day’ event that was held in Peckham earlier this year as part of the Council’s Overview and Scrutiny function.

“The event gathered together a wide cross-section of residents from around the borough to hear evidence from young people with experience of gangs and officers from the council, police and other agencies dealing with related issues of youth violence, safeguarding and sexual exploitation.

“A number of recommendations came out of the day and these have been used to inform our future plans to address knife crime in the borough.

“One recommendation was to include young people in the solution to these issues.

“Recently our Young Advisors held a Youth Voice Summit; the first event of its kind saw young people from various schools across the borough come together to speak to council and police leaders to share their experiences of what life is like for them in Southwark as well as hear their views on what they would like to see from the authorities.

“We are also currently recruiting young people from various

backgrounds, to be part of Southwark Youth Independent Advisory Group.

This will give young people an opportunity to have their voices heard and to shape and influence statutory agencies working to tackle knife crime.

“As a borough, we are moving in the right direction, but we are not complacent, we know there is still a

long way to go.

“However what we are clear on is that there is no one size fits all approach to ending knife crime and as a local authority we remain open-minded about what approaches to take.

“Where there is evidence to support a certain way of working we will consider it.”

Family: Thank you to those ‘who made sure our boy was not alone in his final moments’

THE FAMILY of Rocky Djelal, the 38-year-old who was stabbed to death in Southwark Park on Wednesday afternoon, have said they are “grief-stricken” by their loss.

THE OFFICER leading the murder investigation into the death of Rocky Djelal told the News he wanted to hear any information people might have no matter how small and said the killing was especially ‘concerning’, as it happened next to children playing.

Speaking in Southwark Park on Friday, on the spot where Mr Djelal was stabbed to death at around 2pm on Wednesday afternoon, DCI Simon Harding said: “This was 2pm, it was busy, it was quite a nice day and he’s prepared to walk in to the park in front of the children’s playground where there were children at the time and stab somebody.”

Detectives were keeping an open mind on the possible motive, and said he did not know whether the killer was known to Rocky or not.

DCI Simon Harding said: “I don’t know about the motives at the moment.

There’s lots of lines of enquiry we’re following.

“There’s some fairly unhelpful speculation in the media at the moment.

“We have a lot to do to find out who it is first - if we find out who it is which is the most important thing we might find out what the motive is after that.”

Mr Djelal is believed to have been recently released from prison for his role in a gang which carried out a ‘mistaken identity’ killing of a Borough man in 2013.

Chris Foster had been drinking at the St. Christopher’s Inn pub on Borough High Street when he was stabbed.

The gang had attacked the father-ofone, believing him to be somebody else.

SHOCKING CCTV footage of Rocky’s suspected killer strolling out of Southwark Park shortly after stabbing him to death next to children playing was released by police on Friday evening.

DCI Simon Harding, the officer leading the investigation, released the footage of the main suspect – taken from the CCTV cameras of the Park Café – who is pictured in the park prior to attack, and leaving after stabbing Rocky.

Police believe the suspect left the park

by Gomm Road at around 2:00pm before turning onto Lower Road, passing in front of the Seven Islands Leisure Centre and then towards the roundabout close to the Rotherhithe tunnel.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Harding, from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “I hope that by releasing the footage someone might recognise the suspect, his walk, his clothing or maybe his gait.

”I’m sure that someone would have walked past him and I need these sorts of witnesses to come forward and help us piece together his movements.”

He added: “I also would like to hear from anyone who may have taken pictures or video on their mobile phones whilst in Southwark Park between 11:00hrs and 14:15hrs on Wednesday, 31 October.

“It was a clear sunny day and was of course Halloween which may make the public remember where they were.”

Police were called to Southwark Park shortly before 2pm on Wednesday, 31 October to reports of a man assaulted, but despite the best efforts of the emergency services were not able to save Rocky.

A post-mortem on last Thursday gave the cause of death as a stab wound.

Witnesses are urged to call the incident room on 020 8721 4205 or Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111.

He tragically died after being stabbed in the back.

Mr Djelal had been sentenced to six years in prison at the trial in November 2014, after pleading guilty to conspiracy to cause GBH. Police have released shocking CCTV footage of the suspected killer, which shows him strolling out of the park just

moments after the fatal attack on Mr Djelal.

Detectives believe that the killer was in the park around fifteen minutes before the attack on Rocky, who was on the phone at the time.

Police believe the suspect then left the park by Gomm Road at around 2pm before turning onto Lower Road, passing

found with a slash wound on his arm.

The pair were rushed to hospital, but the authorities say their injuries are not lifethreatening or life-changing.

The incident came just hours after an earlier stabbing in Southwark Park, Rotherhithe, on Halloween shortly before 2pm.

Rocky Djelal, 38, died as a result of his injuries and police have launched a murder investigation. But officers told the News that the Met did not think the events were connected.

A Met Police spokesperson told the News: “Police were called at 02:39hrs on Thursday, 1 November to reports of a stabbing on Bury Road, Southwark.

“Officers attended and found one man suffering from a slash wound to his arm and another with a stab wound to his chest.

“Both were taken to hospital and their injuries were not deemed life threatening or life-changing.”

No arrests have yet been made and police enquiries continue.

The family said: “We would like to thank everybody for the kind words, love and support you have shown our family at this time.

“Thank you to all of the people who rushed to Rocky’s aid in the park and made sure our boy was not alone in his final moments.

“Thank you to all of our friends and family who waited in the park with us while we waited for our boy to be taken away, we couldn’t have done it without you.

“The messages and phone calls of support we have received have blown us away. It’s so comforting to hear all the lovely things you all have to say about Rocky and to know our boy was truly loved.”

The family went on to add: “For those who are helping the police with their enquiries we can’t thank you enough and urge anybody to come forward with any information no matter how insignificant you may think it is.

“This happened in a child’s play park in broad daylight and we would not want any other family to go through what we are going through.”

The murder took place around 2pm near the Gomm Road entrance to Southwark Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The lead officer said the suspect’s clothing made him very ‘distinctive’ and added that he would have passed lots of people walking out of the park, whom he urged to contact him immediately.

any member of the public who has concerns or believe they’ve heard something - it doesn’t matter how small, I can work on those,” said the officer.

“My team can easily dispel any rumours that might occur by our investigation, so I’m happy to hear anything from anybody to help find who did this.”

Teen charged with murder

THE DETECTIVES investigating the fatal stabbing of Malcolm Mide-Madariola outside Clapham South tube station have charged a teenager with murder.

A seventeen-year-old arrested on Monday, November 5 on suspicion of murder was due appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

A second man, aged eighteen, who was also arrested on suspicion of

murder on Monday, has been released on bail until later this month.

Police were called to reports of a stabbing on Balham Hill at 4.35pm last Friday, with officers and paramedics finding seventeen-yearold Malcolm suffering from a stab wound.

Despite their best efforts, he tragically died from his injuries shortly after being rushed to hospital.

“Malcolm was renowned for being an excellent role model to his peers.

“He had a dedicated work ethic, was a deep and creative thinker and balanced a calm, mature manner with a wonderful sense of humour and an infectious smile.

“His commitment to fulfilling his potential was realised in his superb GCSE results.

“Malcolm was admired by all in our school community: teachers loved working with him; younger students looked up to him and his peers recognised him as a very special individual.

“To lose such a precious, innocent life at so young an age is beyond tragic.

“Malcolm will be remembered always as a great ambassador of Harris Academy Peckham."

Drugs firm is charged after St Thomas’ Hospital baby deaths

OFFICERS INVESTIGATING the deaths of babies at several hospitals, including St Thomas’, charged a pharmaceuticals company which had allegedly supplied a contaminated feed last Wednesday.

ITH Pharma, based in north London, was charged with seven counts of supplying a medicinal product which was not of the nature or quality specified in the prescription.

It has also been charged with failing to take all reasonably practicable steps to ensure that patients were not infected by contaminants, in breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act, between 1 August 2009 and 1 June 2014.

However the company has pledged to “vigorously” defend the case.

An investigation was launched by Scotland Yard after three babies died in 2014, including nine-day-old Yousef Al Kharboush on June 1 2014.

Yousef and his twin brother Abdulilah were born prematurely in May 2014, and were fed intravenously on a fluid provided by ITH.

A NEW critical care centre at King’s College Hospital, due to be the largest in the world, has been delayed after an inspection uncovered major fire safety issues.

The setback for the project - due to “defective fire management” - was uncovered by an inspection by a technical team from the hospital’s Trust during the final stage of the commissioning process.

The safety flaw means that the building firm responsible, McLaughlin & Harvey, will have to undertake “significant remedial work” over the next four weeks to make the building safe.

None of the other buildings within the hospital are affected, said the Trust.

A spokesperson from King’s College NHS Foundation Trust, which manages the hospital, said: “The safety of patients, visitors and staff is paramount.

“Before the unit can be opened, significant remedial work is required.

“The Trust has instructed the builder, McLaughlin & Harvey to provide a robust programme to complete the

ITH Pharma Ltd is facing criminal prosecution over ‘the supply of contaminated feed’ for premature babies in 2014

Yousef later contracted fatal blood poisoning, allegedly as a result of the contaminated feed. His twin was not affected.

Another baby died in St Thomas’ hospital on June 10, and a third at a hospital in Cambridge.

The four-year investigation only established that Yousef’s death was directly linked to the contaminated feed.

Yousef's father Raaid Sakkijha said: “It has been like living with an open wound that will not close.

“We have found it impossible to move on while the case is ongoing, I am not

The News asked King’s College Trust what the ‘defective fire management’ flaw involved and was told only that the safety concerns related to “fire stopping.”

The centre was due to open in summer 2018 but the hospital’s managing body has now said that it cannot give a timeframe for the building’s opening.

The NHS has contributed £80million towards the construction of the building, while the King’s College Hospital Charity has undertaken a £1.6million fundraising drive towards the centre.

A Trust spokesperson told the News: “It was due to open in summer 2018.

“We are currently awaiting a programme of works from the builders.

“We are unable to provide a new date until we receive that programme.

The programme of remedial work will be subject to a review by the design team at King’s College Hospital before the building is allowed to open.

The News has contacted the construction company, McLaughlin and Harvey, but did not receive a reply.

“Since 2008, ITH has manufactured more than 1.4-million components of total parenteral nutrition and is the sole commercial supplier of reactive feeding solutions to the NHS. This product has helped thousands of extremely vulnerable infants survive premature and complex births.

“ITH imposes rigorous environmental monitoring on its manufacturing process.

The company has always had a strong relationship with the MHRA and continues to receive exemplary ratings for quality and safety.”

A spokesperson from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust said: “Our heartfelt sympathies are with the family of Yousef Al-Kharboush after what they have been through.

“We supported the parents at the time of Yousef’s death, and worked closely with Public Health England and the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency as we were one of six trusts involved in their wider investigation.

“Now that the Met Police have charged ITH Pharma Ltd in relation to this case it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

Residents take legal action against ‘super sewer’

A CHAMBERS Wharf campaigning group has started legal action against Tideway, the construction company behind the Thames ‘super sewer’ project, the News can reveal.

Tideway is currently in the process of building a £4.2 billion tunnel through the River Thames to control sewer overflow discharges, and one of the main worksites is at Chambers Wharf.

A ‘pre-action protocol’ letter was sent to construction firm on Monday, outlining the intent to serve the claim.

Campaigners say they hope the legal action, if it goes to a full hearing, will clarify whether Tideway has a public sector equalities duty as it is carrying out public work.

Public sector bodies have a duty to consider certain protected characteristics when carrying out work, which private firms do not.

Local activists also say that the action would clear up whether a more extensive impact assessment should have been carried out before the construction began, as well as clarify whether private firms’ decisions can be subject to a Judicial Review.

Gary Kandinsky, of Protecting Residents from the Super Sewer, said: “Many of the residents needs for

mitigation from noise, vibration and dust have not been addressed.

“We have won minor concessions for Tideway last year, but they have become increasingly difficult to work with and placed many unnecessary barriers up on our reasonable requests for low cost breaks and other respite, on a scheme costing £5bn which will blight our home lives for several more years.”

Tideway declined to comment specifically on whether it has received the letter, but added it encouraged “any residents who feel affected by our works to contact us.”

A Tideway spokesperson said: “Tideway is committed to doing as much as we can to limit the impact of our works on people who live and work near

our sites “This has included using specialist equipment to reduce the levels of noise during construction, keeping lorries off the roads by transporting materials by river, and building a noise and dust enclosure which will house a large proportion of the work.

“Robust and detailed impact assessments were carried about before work started, as is usual with any major project and we continue to have regular dialogue with the community.”

Tideway has two weeks to set out their response to the letter, the News understands, before the next step in proceedings.

The campaigning group has been helped in its bid by the Public Interest

Law Centre in Lambeth, while the Southwark Law Centre has been assisting residents with case work.

Sally Causer, Southwark Law Centre CEO, said that the centre had assisted by residents with health issues over concerns with the construction, adding: “Decision making on the mitigation offered is far from transparent and the appeal process seems to be another barrier for vulnerable residents.”

A previous attempt to force a Judicial Review over the ‘super sewer’ project was submitted by Southwark Council in 2015.

However, the legal challenge collapsed after the council’s legal papers were submitted late in a confusion over deadlines.

‘LSBU is the creative university on the left bank of the Thames’ - Sir Simon made Chancellor

THE FORMER long-standing MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Sir Simon Hughes, has been inaugurated as the Chancellor of London South Bank University (LSBU).

The political grandee was appointed to the role at a ceremony at the university’s Purcell Room on Thursday, November 1.

In a speech given at the ceremony, Sir Simon pledged to work to make sure educational opportunities were available for all.

He said: “To be appointed your Chancellor is a further great privilege of my London life.

“LSBU is the creative university on the left bank of the Thames. Like the Sorbonne in Paris.

Creative, challenging, dynamic and vibrant.

“Our job is to equip students of today and tomorrow with the academic, technical, emotional and mental strength to survive the challenges of life and make the greatest contribution.”

The veteran politician takes over from entrepreneur and former Dragon’s Den panellist Richard Farleigh in the fouryear unpaid role.

Sir Simon also paid tribute to the support of his family, friends and colleagues, even in times of ‘loss, disappointment and embarrassment.’

He said: “In front of me today is not just my wonderful family but many others who have been very important parts of my life and education journey, but also who have been huge support when in private and public life there has been personal loss, personal embarrassment and personal disappointment.

“I want to say a heartfelt thank you for your real support when even this most resilient of individuals needed to know as much as anyone that he was still loved and supported, and that family and friends really cared.”

However, Sir Simon vowed that the role would not stop him from promoting the causes closest to his heart, adding that he would still campaign for Britain to remain in the EU, for ‘respect’ for people from all backgrounds and a better financial settlement for students.

His installation was welcomed by Shakira Martin, the current president of the National Union of Students.

The former Lewisham and Southwark College student said: “There is much work to be done in the HE sector. I am sure Simon will use his experiences, networks and knowledge for the benefit of students at LSBU." London South Bank University currently has 17,000 students and was named the Entrepreneurial University of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards in 2016.

Time to plant trees, shrubs and rose bushes

CTOBER WAS mild and mostly sunny with cold overnight temperatures.

This type of weather produces stunning leaf colour; and belatedly trees are putting on a beautiful display.

November is known for damp, misty weather with raw northerly winds (these conditions crept in during the last few days of October).

But there can be fine dry periods – which are ideal for planting trees, shrubs and rose bushes. A fragrant hybrid tea rose is a welcome addition to any garden; they don’t take up much space as a single plant; and provided they are looked after (frequent deadheading, regular feed during summer, treated quickly for any pests/diseases) will flower through the summer and autumn.

Two beautiful hybrid teas to consider – ‘Dutch Gold’ and ‘Velvet Fragrance’.

Flowering plants become scarce at this time of year, but there are some notable ones including winter honeysuckle; producing delicate, perfumed blooms. Another is the little known Algerian Iris (Mary

Barnard) a hardy plant with attractive deep blue flowers (prefers a sunny dry spot).

Once annuals have been cleared and perennials tidied; lightly dig over the ground and also loosen soil between shrubs and established plants (don’t dig too deeply or uncover any roots). This helps expose the soil to frosts and rain, and kill pest larvae over wintering in the ground.

With much of the autumn clearing completed by now (or it should be) and less work required in the garden; this is a good time to install a simple system for collecting rainwater.

There are plenty of kits available consisting of a plastic barrel (‘butt’) with a section of gutter and drainpipe for attaching to the shed or garage roof. This could provide enough water to make a difference if drought conditions return next summer. It is also useful - some plants like Azalea, Heather and blueberries will not tolerate tap water and rainwater is essential.

Once a system is installed always make sure the water butt has a tight fitting lid – to prevent leaves and

Letter of the week

FTER A summer of killing in Southwark, a new wave of stabbings has arrived, with five killed in south London in just one week. And this is on top of a series of stabbings that were not fatal.

At all levels of police and government the reasons behind the on-going violence, especially among young people, is being analysed to find ways to combat it. The debate rages between those who see it simply as an enforcement issue and other seeing it as more of a health issue.

Here at the News we have previously argued that it should be treated as a health issue, and not just one of law enforcement.

Experts in the field at an anti-knife crime summits earlier this year and up to last week have pointed to the fact that Scotland has successfully adopted this model and that last year there was no fatal youth knife crime.

Scottish authorities have adopted this model for the past twenty years, so while it might be the answer it will not happen overnight. Indeed getting all agencies successfully to co-ordinate their efforts in order to tackle the problem is a huge job.

This week the News interviewed the Borough Commander on the merger with Lambeth. He promised that the new structure, which was imposed by the Met, will not see a decrease in officers.

In fact he told us that there will be an increase in ward officers and 999 emergency response teams. He said there would be no change in the gang units – although you would obviously argue that we definitely need change i.e. more officers.

Figures gained by this paper through a freedom of information request show that in the last four years Southwark’s safer neighbourhood team strength has been cut from a peak of 218 in 2014, to 121 at the end of September this year. At the end of December 2017, there were 141 officers in ‘neighbourhood policing roles’.

The Borough Commander would surely welcome more officers to the neighbourhood teams, as to a large degree they follow the health model, in that they do a lot of work with social services and other agencies to identify those in danger of being the perpetrators and victims of crime. Often it is the low-level crimes committed by youths, which are dealt with by these officers, that escalate into the senseless killings on our streets.

The Met is currently undergoing one of the largest recruitment drives in its history, but it will take time to train these officers. However, when the new recruits are ready all the movers and shakers in the borough need to be on the same page. Southwark needs be at the forefront of getting these men and women in our borough and in posts that will make a real difference like the safer neighbourhood teams.

In the meantime, the more work that can be done to first enforce the law and then bring all agencies together should continue - if we are ever to see a reduction in the violence with which we are sadly becoming all to familiar.

Greater game for the greater good ON A rather brisk Thursday evening I’m sat under the arches at The Waterloo East Theatre for a performance of Michael Head’s The Greater Game, writes Christopher Peacock...

With a grandmother who encouraged James to pursue his passion and a mother who wanted her son to have a ‘back-up plan’, he trod a fine line between the two women in his life: ‘Having been involved in the music industry, I think my mother knew the instability and challenges a career in the arts would bring.’ Upon arriving in the UK, however, James took drama at college and ‘became involved in as many amateur dramatic productions as I could, and found myself able to at last feed my obsession for the stage.’

James and his producing partner, Rochelle Parry, set up Immersion Theatre as a vehicle for their acting careers, but over time his passion shifted from performing to directing and producing. He explains, ‘The buzz was less from taking a bow and more from sitting in a theatre, watching an audience enjoy a show you’ve created, knowing that they’re all there because of you and the work you’ve put in. There’s no greater feeling.’ After years of doing multiple jobs to keep the company going Immersion became their full-time jobs, and a UK tour of Our House attracted three What’s On Stage nominations. The hard work put in eventually paid off, dreams came true

and James is coinfident that ‘as long as you put the work in, I truly believe you can achieve whatever you set your mind to.’

That belief and effort has led to him directing Seussical The Musical - a dream waiting to happen for 15 years. ‘I remember watching an amateur production in college and falling instantly in love. I adore everything about it – not least what it has to say and what it stands for. My passion is family theatre and this show is family theatre in the truest sense. It has been created for audiences of all ages and boasts one of the most electric scores I’ve come across, larger-than-life yet painfully relatable characters which will resonate with everyone in the audience and addresses a number of issues in a sensitive and intelligent way. I cannot stress enough, whether you’re a child, a parent, a young adult with no children…you will absolutely connect with this show and leave having had an amazing time and feeling inspired.’ The love James Tobias has for this piece of work was unmistakable and I am now as excited as he is. I can’t wait to see what will definitely be one of the standout Christmas shows in London.

JAMES TOBIAS was born in Spain, spent some formative years as a child in Mexico, lived in several other countries, went to college in Eastbourne and university in Carlisle… I’m hoping that the family was on the run from incompetent baddies like those in Home Alone, because anything else to explain the continuous moving around would be far less exciting, writes Michael Holland...

Mr Tobias now lives in Leighton Buzzard but those years constantly circling the globe has translated to constantly working, with two pantomimes in production this Christmas, The Amazing Adventures of Pinocchio next spring, for which he has written the book and lyrics, and his bucket list dream of directing Seussical The Musical happening very soon. But more of that later.

James’ initial attraction to the theatre was seeing the Mexican production of Grease. ‘As a child I was obsessed with Grease,’ he says with a nostalgic twinkle lighting up his eye as he remembers that first theatrical experience. ‘I was in awe of it all: the music, the actors, everything. That’s when I knew theatre was what I wanted to do.’

I had not heard before and is certainly an interesting play for any fan of military or sports history.

I certainly enjoyed it and think with more performances it will get tighter as a production.

This WWI piece is based on the true story of Clacton Orient (later to become Leyton Orient) and their joining of the 17th Battalion Middlesex Regiment, also known as The Footballers Battalion.

The first half starts with the growth of the O’s as a team and the signing of Richard McFadden (played by James Phelps) and William Jonas (Steven Bush), boyhood pals from the northeast.

The team is full of characters and in Herbert ‘Jumbo’ Reason (Michael Head) and Jimmy Hugall (Tom Stocks) we have the comic foils for a lot of the dressing room humour. The first half ends with them in action at the battle of the Somme. As you can imagine, the second half isn’t as cheery.

The stories of McFadden and Jonas hold the emotional heart of the narrative.

From their settling into life in London with their partners to their friendship on the field of war we see their relationship develop. The dressing room banter and dark trench humour contrast starkly with the traumatic experiences these brave men went through.

WE COMMEMORATE the centenary of the cessation of World War One, when so many lives were lost or changed forever, both on the front line and at home.

Then it happened. Armistice Day! November 11: the end of the war.

When the good news was received, Mr Bingley, the Magistrate at Tower Bridge Police court, adjourned for ten minutes to 'allow an opportunity for the excitement to subside.’ That was not long enough, was it? This day had been expected and once it was declared, a huge sigh of relief followed but this just marked an outpouring of grief and shock that would tear through the district.

Four years had passed since our girls had waved off their men but they were barely recognisable when they came home. Those sparkling eyes were now filled with the horrors of war and it was only then that reality hit home. So many had died, so many were injured -both physically and mentally affected by the terrible sights they had seen.

Those 'lucky' enough to have survived were changed men, both physically and psychologically.

The saddest sight to be seen was a telegram boy knocking at someone's door. How awful for a mother who had reluctantly waved her boy off to war to hear of his demise in some cold, water-filled ditch.

To make matters worse the soldier's uniform was returned home, covered in thick mud and blood. Other lads were sent home on sick leave with terrible injuries. Once nursed back to health they would be sent back again as 'cannon fodder'. It was said that when the guns went off at the Somme, they could be heard in the Old Kent Road.

Whether Sidney Fern met up with George at Thiepval will never be known; they were from different regiments but it is likely. They both died there within a day of each other.

Sidney's father Fred also worked at Welch Margetson as a collar cutter and Sidney had been a porter there.

He had no descendants. He served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders and was wounded while on observation duty during the Battle of the Somme. He died at the Military Hospital, Boulogne, and was buried there.

horrors of war but he was not left unscathed. He had been mustard-gassed which attacked his lungs, ripping the very breath out of him and resulting in his premature death. Nurse Vera Brittain, wrote: "I wish those people who talk about going on with this war whatever it costs could see the soldiers suffering from mustard gas poisoning. Great mustard-coloured blisters, blind eyes, all sticky and stuck together, always fighting for breath, with voices a mere whisper, saying that their throats are closing and they know they will choke."

The memorial website will be launched on the centenary of the armistice, on November 11. On Saturday at 11am, exactly one hundred years after the guns fell silent, a minute’s silence will be held at Herne Hill station.

Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes said: “The need for remembrance is growing with the passing of the generation who lived through the First World War, and there is no more effective way to bring remembrance to life than to help young people to understand and imagine what happened during the war to people living in their own neighbourhood.”

AS MANY as 700 people from Herne Hill died in the First World War, but until now their names have not been recorded in one place.

In a Heritage Lottery funded project, the Herne Hill Society is working in partnership with The Charter School North Dulwich and local volunteers to record the names, lives and deaths of every serviceman and civilian who died during World War One.

Although Herne Hill has several community memorials – including memorials at St Paul’s Church, St Savour’s and on Rosendale Road’s Peabody Estate - there is no central civic monument to commemorate

all its war dead and the total number of casualties is not known. Some memorials are now lost, such as one on the side of the former St Jude’s Church on Dulwich Road.

Across London it is estimated that around 100,000 people died and 230,000 were wounded. According to the Herne Hill Society, it is generally believed that around 500 people from Herne Hill died as war casualties at home or abroad.

So far, volunteers have already unearthed details about the lives and deaths of 350 casualties in Herne Hill.

Volunteers say the true number of deaths in the community could be as high as 700.

More than a dozen who died

were eighteen, several seventeen and at least one boy, Harold Fowler, from 19 Ardbeg Road, lost his life at just sixteen.

The casualties include Louisa Tearle, from 88 Railton Road. She was a stewardess on the RMS Falaba when it was torpedoed and sunk by U-28 in March 1915.

More than 100 passengers and crew, including Louisa, were killed.

Another victim was Fred Lucas, a Staff Sergeant in the Royal Garrison Artillery when he was killed at the Somme in July 1916. He left a widow and five little children at 45 Kemerton Road.

The people of Walworth are determined that their names should never be forgotten

WALK THROUGH most English villages and towns and you’ll probably see a war memorial commemorating the local people who have died fighting for their country.

These monuments have become important local focus points for remembering. Yet while carrying out research for their recent History Festival, members of the Walworth Society realised that there was little in the local area to recognise the sacrifices made by the Walworth men in World War One.

Aiming to redress this, the Walworth Society, in conjunction with students from Goldsmiths University History Department, have been working hard to produce a temporary monument to the fallen of Walworth in time for the Armistice celebrations next Sunday.

Using the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, they have identified the names of over 800 men with a direct connection to Walworth.

higher, but far more research needs to be done to confirm the actual number.

A long banner identifying these names will be displayed in the recently reopened memorial garden in front of the old Southwark Town Hall in Walworth Road.

Information boards will attempt to show, in some small way, the impact the war had on the area, and people will be able to look up further details of the men on a website.

The location chosen to display this is particularly poignant as it was in this building that many of the men would have enlisted to join the forces.

Photographs taken at the time show crowds of smiling men queuing outside of the town hall. We do not know the fate of these men.

Whatever their motivations for enlisting, the men of Walworth joined up in their thousands and many of them paid the ultimate sacrifice.

A preliminary study of the data base throws up hundreds of interesting and moving stories.

The war impacted on all generations; among the dead are four sixteen year olds and at the other end of the scale we find a 59 year old.

The first casualty is recorded at the Battle of Mons just 20 days after war was declared on August 4, 1914, with the last man being recorded as dying in Iraq in August 1921 as the global conflict rumbled on after the fighting in Europe had ceased.

When thinking of World War One, people’s thoughts instantly go to the muddy battlefields of France and Belgium, but this was a truly global conflict and Walworth men are recorded as dying in places as far afield as Greece,

Turkey, Israel, Pakistan, Syria, Russia and Iraq.

The majority of the men served in the army, but they also joined the Royal Navy, The Merchant Navy and even the fledging Royal Flying Corps.

Walworth men were present at every major battle in the war including Neuve Chappelle, the Somme and Passchendale.

Three local sailors died together when “HMS Queen Mary” was sunk during the Battle of Jutland. Many others lost their lives on the beaches of Gallipoli, including Sergeant Frank Edward Stubbs, who won the Victoria Cross for his gallantry.

At least ten pairs of brothers were killed and perhaps the saddest example of this is that of the two Freeman brothers of Rodney Road, who died within a month of each other in 1916.

Another tragic story is that of Henry Charles Brutus Taylor, a nineteen-year-old who died in a German Prison Camp on the very day that the fighting in Europe ended.

Every name recorded on the memorial has its own heartbreaking tale attached to it and, although some of these stories may never be fully known, the Walworth Society and the people of Walworth are determined that their names should never be forgotten.

This memorial is seen as just the starting point for a larger project to properly commemorate Walworth’s role in the First World War and the organisers would love to hear any memories people have about relatives who fought in or were affected by the conflict.

A small opening ceremony is planned to take place at 11am on Saturday, November 10, in the memorial garden outside of the Old Southwark Town Hall and all are invited to attend.

THE STORIES of London’s print workers serving in the First World War’s battlefields are still being told today thanks to a Camberwell born printer and his family.

Roger Kenrick was born in Camberwell and worked in south London as a compositor for the Ballantyne Press. Today, his diary of serving in the First World War is held at Kennington’s Imperial War Museum.

Before signing up, he set up a regular ‘bulletin’ to keep Ballantyne employees up to date with their colleagues, and send gifts to the front.

His family, including daughter, Betty Dibb aged 93, and her daughters Alison Cooke and Liz Tillett are incredibly proud of his legacy, and have shared images and stories from his wartime paper.

His granddaughter Alison, told the News: “Roger volunteered to serve in World War One when he was in his 40s. He kept a diary of his exploits and a copy of his diary is in the Imperial War Museum.

“However, before he signed up, he worked as a compositor for the Ballantyne Press in London.

“Many of his younger fellow workers in the press went off to war before him and as a way of contributing to the war effort and keeping in touch with boys who were serving, he began compiling a small newsletter called The Ballantyne Press London Bulletin.

“Each bulletin contained some news from home and as time went on copies of letters back from the boys on the frontline.

“Each copy of the Bulletin sold for a halfpenny and everyone employed in the Press paid one penny into the fund.

“From these funds my grandad put together parcels for the boys on the frontline. As the parcels arrived at their destinations, the recipients would write back to my grandfather saying what a difference their arrival had made to their lives.

“Once word got out about the Bulletin people in London began donating money to the fund to keep the parcels going.

“A dollar even arrived from the States from a family whose son had seen a fellow soldier receive a parcel.”

The parcels cost three shillings to post to France, and contained biscuits, cigarettes, chocolate, Vaseline, boracic ointment, postcards, writing paper, envelopes, butterscotch sweets plus a copy of the Bulletin so they could read about how their friends were faring.

One soldier wrote back in thanks: “How can I thank you all for your kindness in sending me such an excellent Christmas parcel.

“The contents were very

acceptable and I shared it with Corporal Bowdery, who had already done the same thing with the one sent to him.

“Corporal Bowdery, whose nerves have broken down, has been transferred to some job behind the firing line so has to recuperate for a while.

“The weather is so bad in some cases we have had to remove our boots and socks and turn up our trousers and wade through water.

“The other night the Germans blew up a mine 200 yards to the left of us and attacked but by gum did we let them have it.

“We had several casualties but not so many as we expected.

2. The effect of the orders would be, as part of the provision of an extension of the existing controlled parking zone ‘P’, in the Dulwich area would be, in VILLAGE WAY:-

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The London Borough of Southwark (Upper Ground) (Loading restrictions and taxi stopping area) (No. 2) Temporary Traffic Order 2018 Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that it intends to make the above Temporary Traffic Order under section 14(1)(b) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES FURTHER NOTICE that it has approved under section 23 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the provision of new raised ‘zebra’ pedestrian crossings at the following locations:- ST JAMES’S ROAD, the centre of which would be located 13 metres north-east of the north-eastern kerb-line build-out of Verney Road; zig-zag markings, on which vehicles would be prohibited from stopping at all times would be laid for a distance of 5 metres south-west of this crossing; and on the north-east of this crossing (i) 4.5 metres on the north-western side and (ii) 8 metres on the south-eastern side; and ROTHERHITHE NEW ROAD, the centre of which would be located 39 metres south-west of the south-western kerb-line of Verney Way; zig-zag markings, on which vehicles would be prohibited from stopping at all times would be laid for a distance of 7.8 metres south-west of this crossing; and on the north-east of this crossing (i) 4.5 metres on the north-western side and (ii) 8.8 metres on the south-eastern side.

AFTER NO game the previous Peckham Rye returned to league action against Vanbrugh F.C back on home soil at the Griffin last weekend.

Peckham started on the front foot with new signing Joshua Newcombe winning his aerial battles in midfield. That gave the hosts a platform and they took the lead when Danny Gibson’s delightful pass found Duke Binitie on the edge of the box to half-volley home.

Binitie turned provider with a ball inside for Anthony Dennis to finish into the top corner for his fourth of the season. Neil Williams should have made it three but couldn’t beat the keeper from close range and it was 2-0 at the break.

The second half started with Vanbrugh on the attack and a cute header made it 21. However it took just two minutes for the Rye to restore the two-goal lead as Newcombe played in Binitie for his second. The Rye took the game by the scruff of the neck and Binitie completed the hat-trick and they added two more before Vanbrugh claimed a consolation.

Rye manager Alvin Spencer said: “It was a good game that we controlled well.

We just have to cut out the silly mistakes.”

Gavin Rose’s side appeared to be on their way to another three points after Saturday’s 1-0 win over promotionchasing St Albans City, when goals from Dominic Vose, Nathan Ferguson and Ashley Carew put them 3-1 in front after 52 minutes.

Gethyn Hill had earlier levelled for the visitors, and with nine minutes to go Jamie Lucas got on the scoresheet when he made it 3-2 from the penalty spot.

And Lucas struck again three minutes later to send the majority of the 386 crowd at Imperial Fields home disappointed.

The point, though, did move Hamlet up to thirteenth in the table, just three points off the play-off positions.

Hamlet travel to nineteenth-placed Truro City this Sunday.

Bermondsey club are the masters

CHRISTMAS CAME early for Tokei Judo Club recently when twelve members travelled up to Walsall to the British Judo Centre of Excellence for the annual Samurai Masters competition.

Weigh-in was at 9.30am so it was an early start for the small convoy of cars leaving London Bridge at 6am on a Sunday morning.

The club’s efforts were certainly rewarded with a total of nine players taking medals in the competition, including four golds.

The Samurai Masters is a popular competition as it gives the opportunity to pick up points for progression through the Dan (black belt) grades.

DULWICH HAMLET fans may be forgiven for basking in the warm glow of success as their epic return home reaches its triumphant conclusion. However, they should take heed from the Greeks – those founders of the epic, and avoid resting on their laurels, even if they have been through hell and back.

Champion Hill has probably never previously been compared to a paradisiacal Greek island, but to follow the analogy, their south London equivalent to Ithaca is peeping into view on the horizon. But what if, like the Greek hero Odysseus, they return to a home in a state of depravity? The thought alone is enough to set the alarm bells, or sirens, ringing in the ears of the Dulwich faithful.

Those who have visited the stadium in recent times, or seen the images of Hamlet photographer, Duncan Palmer, will be aware of the unkempt state of the ground. However, Tom Cullen, director at Dulwich Hamlet, provided the News with a comprehensive summary of the preparation needed to ready Champion Hill for the return of competitive football and Dulwich’s rowdy supporters.

“We’re aiming for December 1, which would be a home game against Torquay United. This is of course dependent on Torquay’s progress in the FA Cup. But whether we are playing Torquay or not, the first of December is when the stadium should be up and running.”

Tom had an optimistic message for fans concerned about the current state of their natural home, and perhaps a worrying one for health and safety inspectors.

“In all honesty, we’ve probably operated match-days in the past in a worse state than things are in today.

But we can use this as a fantastic opportunity to make improvements.

There are a lot of basic things to do such as plumbing, fixing the floodlights and giving the place a deep clean. Furthermore, it’s been a very hot summer of course and so there are a lot of things growing where they shouldn’t be.”

The greatest task, Tom warns, will be preparing the Champion Hill pitch, which eagle-eyed fans will have noticed is heavily overgrown.

Ian Jordan and his eponymous company, Jordans Sports Ground Solutions, has long tended to the playing surface at Champion Hill and other pitches around London. Jordans has worked almost every day since the return was announced in order to get the pitch back up to scratch.

Tom adds: “Another main thing is getting the boardroom ready for the remembrance service this weekend.”

The importance of the Hamlet memorial was alluded to previously in this column by mayor of Southwark, Catherine Rose. It goes without saying that good condition of the memorial will be hugely significant for the local community this weekend.

One might wonder how Dulwich, a club straddled with financial difficulty, can mobilise the resources needed in order to prepare their stadium at such short notice. However, help has come from both familiar and more surprising places.

THE FRUSTRATING sense that it’s one step forwards one step back for Millwall this season was felt again at Brentford last Saturday after another disappointing away performance deservedly merited no rewards.

It was certainly frustrating for Lions supporters, who packed the away end but in the second half didn’t see a single shot on the goal just in front of them.

Instead, they squinted into the sunlight as red-and-white shirts raided the other end and added a second goal with five minutes left to seal the game. The scoreboard could have worn a worse look.

It was a Millwall performance again so far below what they have been delivering at The Den, where they have collected fourteen of their sixteen points this season. Apart from a few set-pieces in the first half, Brentford’s penalty box was an exclusion zone for Lions attackers.

Yes the visitors could have gone ahead when Shaun Hutchinson thumped a header towards goal that Daniel Bentley superbly leapt up to tip over the bar, but

that was their only effort on target in the game.

Bees boss Thomas Frank said afterwards he had prepared his team to play with a high defensive line, to ensure that if there were any second balls Millwall would still be far from goal. Other teams will note Brentford’s success with that strategy and the worry for Millwall is that there doesn’t seem to be another plan for getting through a higher line. Shaun Williams and Ryan Leonard are capable of playing through passes to strikers running into space behind defences, but it was notable how little the midfield pair were in possession, facing forward at Griffin Park. Millwall barely had sequences of more than five passes.

It also played to Brentford’s strengths that Millwall defended so narrowly in their two blocks of four defenders and four midfielders. Halloween may have been over but Mahlon Romeo was haunted by a presence called Said Benrahma in a harrowing personal 45 minutes for the defender.

Maybe Lions boss Neil Harris felt Romeo could handle the winger, but it’s always a risk to leave a defender oneon-one especially when it is the attacker who has it in his head first what he’s

going to do next, forcing the opponent to always be reactive. Benrahma also had the advantage of being able to go outside or cut inside, the latter which he did in the first half before he curled a shot from outside the box past goalkeeper Ben Amos but the ball came back off the crossbar. When Benrahma next went outside, his trickery tilted Romeo off balance and the defender could only flop down on the ball and handle it.

Jiri Skalak, playing in front of Romeo and having to balance keeping tight in midfield and dropping deeper to help out his team-mate, was caught in a bit of a no-man’s land, effective in neither defence nor attack, and he went off a frustrated figure 20 minutes into the second half.

The hosts had gone in front when Leonard’s attempted pass came off Tom Elliott in Millwall’s half, Nico Yennaris helped the ball on to Neal Maupay who found Sergi Canos with only Amos to beat, the winger carefully side-footing home a low shot.

Jed Wallace came on for Skalak after Steve Morison had replaced Elliott and briefly Millwall were more aggressive and gave the impression they might rescue something from the game.

Morison slipped a pass through to Lee Gregory in the box but the striker’s shot was blocked and the ball rebounded off him and wide.

With eleven minutes left Harris sent on Tom Bradshaw for left-back Murray Wallace but that took any remaining structure away from the side, leaving them essentially in attack-and-defence mode.

Maupay had already hit the crossbar after Henrik Dalsgaard had flicked on a corner, before a succession of attacks speared towards a Millwall defence with no protection in front of them.

The away side were woefully stretched trying to chase an equaliser, and Maupay and substitute Ollie Watkins were in the mood to punish them. Maupay almost added a second after going past Hutchinson but he flashed a left-footed effort just past the far post.

Another chance came quickly, the attacking pair combining and when Maupay played the ball through to Watkins he got the touch before Romeo to set himself up for another low finish, this time past Amos’ right hand.

It was Brentford’s first win in nine games, and an eighth league loss for Millwall this season.

Joe Cocker’s Beatles cover, With a Little Help from My Friends, was the number one single in the UK, and that same week Millwall defeated Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Derek Possee got one goal and a brace from Keith Weller secured the 3-0 result that tucked the Lions between Middlesbrough and Blackburn Rovers in second place in the old Second Division.

Millwall supporters in the crowd of 19,048 at Carrow Road on November 2, 1968 most likely made their way home from East Anglia thinking and talking about the possibility of promotion to Division One for the first time in the club’s history.

They would have to wait almost 20 years for that, after ending the 196869 Division Two season in tenth place in the league table.

Last season Millwall went to Norwich on New Year’s Day looking for a first away win of the season, went a goal up through Steve Morison but lost 2-1.

Something sparked in them, though, and when they next went on the road they defeated Leeds United in that incredible game 4-3 and won the next five away from The Den to rise from fifteenth in the table on January 1 to sixth on April 10 when they won 2-0 at Bolton.

Murray Wallace said after last Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Brentford that little could be read into form in such a competitive league as the Championship and he better be right, because going on form Millwall are in for a tough afternoon.

Norwich won just one of their first six league games as Daniel Farke’s reign seemed to be coming to an end. But the Canaries have unexpectedly and remarkably turned their season around, winning eight of their last ten games and when

they came away from Hillsborough with an emphatic 4-0 result last Saturday they were top of the table.

It’s even more impressive considering they lost James Maddison to Leicester and Josh Murphy to Cardiff in the summer.

The flip side of that is it gave them serious financial muscle in this division, and it meant they could easily beat Millwall to the permanent signing of Ben Marshall, a player who was important to the Lions’ resurgence in the second half

of last season.

Millwall could do with his reliability and service on the left of midfield, with Jiri Skalak yet to really give the impression he provides the same threat, and Aiden O’Brien out of the side currently.

Millwall have been creating attacking opportunities – 90 in their previous five games before last weekend, according to Neil Harris – but Marshall provided quality ones and chipped in with three goals during his 2017-18 sixteen-game

spell in south London. That’s the same as Skalak, O’Brien, Jed Wallace and Shane Ferguson have scored between them sixteen games into this season.

Goals from attackers have been lacking generally. Lee Gregory has seven but Steve Morison, Tom Elliott and Tom Bradshaw have only two combined.

At the other end, Millwall have conceded 25 goals in sixteen games, a rate that if it continues would see them let in 71 or 72 after 46 games.

It all points to how much improvement is needed in a lot of different areas, and Norwich fans will hardly fret about a first home defeat to the Lions in over 50 years since that November afternoon in 1968.

Honesty the best policy for Chopper and squad

MILLWALL MAY have been disappointed losing to Brentford last weekend, but Neil Harris admitted it was “refreshing” to hear his players speak “some strong words” to each other in the Griffin Park changing rooms after the final whistle.

Harris encourages his squad to air any opinions they have, but insists it is in “an honest and open way” and that’s it resolved in those moments.

Harris watched the fixture back twice

and saw encouraging signs, before his players then shared with each other what they thought went wrong and why they haven’t yet won away this season.

“Some spoke well in the changing room last weekend and there were certainly some strong words said,” Harris revealed.

“I’m very clear that we don’t have a blame culture within the club but everyone’s entitled to an opinion in the changing room, as long as it’s done in an honest and open way and everybody moves on. That’s from me at the top and also from the players.

“There was some honesty spoken in the dressing room, and it was refreshing. It’ll make us better for it, because we didn’t hit our standards.

“What frustrated the group was we were so good at Forest, so good at Reading, had picked up ten points from five games and we went to Brentford and we didn’t perform under pressure. That was the big thing. Under pressure we weren’t brave enough with the ball.

“Coupled with Brentford having their best game of the season it resulted in us losing 2-0.”

Millwall have one fixture left before

the international break, against a Norwich side that have risen from the relegation zone to second over their last ten games.

Harris said: “It’s a tough one with how they’re going at the moment but we want to go into the international break on the back of a positive performance.

“There are always positives in games and there were a lot at Brentford. I was honest with my assessment afterwards because that’s how I am. I can’t say we’ve played well when we’ve played badly.

“We didn’t play well but I still saw a

lot of positives in the game, after reviewing it twice, to know that if we had taken a bit more care of the ball we would have performed better.

“Having seen Norwich earlier and the season and recently, not a lot has changed. They’re certainly playing with confidence.

“They’ve shown, as we showed in the second half of last season and Fulham showed, that if you get on a run, like Birmingham this year, as much as it’s a tough league to grind out results, once do start doing that then you can quickly put together six, eight, ten results in a row and climb that table.”

Onyedinma hints he could remain a Wanderer EXCLUSIVE

FRED ONYEDINMA has stressed he is not prepared to sit on the bench at this stage of his career, with his loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers set to come to an end on January 1.

Onyedinma has been in good form recently for Gareth Ainsworth’s League

One side, enjoying a regular run and last month scoring in successive league games for the first time in three-and-ahalf years.

Onyedinma, who turns 22 later this month, made his 150th Lions appearance earlier this season, against Gillingham in the EFL Cup, but over half of those have been as a substitute.

Nigeria-born Onyedinma knew at the end of last season that he wanted to leave Millwall on loan after starting just seven

league games in 2017-18.

He returned for a second loan spell with the Chairboys, for whom he has made thirteen appearances this season.

Onyedinma knows that if he goes back to Millwall in January he is likely to be behind four strikers vying for a place in Neil Harris’ starting line-up. Onyedinma has mostly played on the left and right wings for Wycombe, but Millwall are also well-stocked in those positions.

Millwall spent over £3million combined in the summer on Murray Wallace, Jiri Skalak, Tom Bradshaw, and Saville’s replacement Ryan Leonard.

The Lions have yet to spend a transfer fee on a player in January in each of Harris’ three full seasons in charge, preferring instead to utilise the loan and free-transfer markets, the latter most notably when signing Tim Cahill ten months ago.

Harris currently has 22 senior players in his squad, but it remains to be seen if Dave Martin, Byron Webster and Conor McLaughlin – who currently miss out on the match-day squad when everyone is fit – will seek moves away in January. Jem Karacan will also be out of contract.

There will be a need for replacements if there are departures.

And when asked if a chunk of the Saville money will be available to him if he decides to strengthen his squad in the next window, Harris replied: “That’s something that will be
