Residents’ council boycott rolls on

EIGHT TENANTS’ and residents’ groups across Southwark are now boycotting the council’s review into communication with tenants and residents living on estates and in council homes across the borough.

As the News reported last month, Southwark’s Tenants’ Council and the Southwark Group of Tenants Organisations (STGO) – who were both invited to work with the ‘resident involvement co-design review panel’ - are refusing to take part, claiming the review could stifle their voices.

Setchell Estate TRA, Rotherhithe Area Forum, Buchan Road TRA, Walworth North Area Forum, Nunhead and Peckham area housing forum, and Faraday Labour branch have all now join the boycott too.

The review will look at the role and format of area-based housing forums, borough-wide housing bodies, the use and management of the tenants’ fund and homeowners’ fund, and the role of resident support bodies such as the STGO. Originally the review was slated to include TRA Halls – but campaigners successfully lobbied for this to be dropped.

Alongside fears the review could clip the wings of the democratically elected TRAs and area forums, campaigners are also aghast at the chair’s reported salary of £12,600 for two-months’ work.

He told the audience he found out about key housing issues across the borough from the papers, rather than being directly contacted by councillors or council staff, and said area forum meetings that used to be well attended by councillors now had hardly any elected

representatives turning up.

But he also claimed Southwark’s existing model had received plaudits in the recent past.

“I have been around long enough to remember when both councillors and council officers came to Southwark to look at an example of best practice,” he told the audience, believing that the issue was not to do with the current structure, but rather councillor and council staff engagement.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

London Assembly member Sian Berry (pictured right) also gave her support, arguing: “This is exactly the wrong time for Southwark to be doing this, they should be keeping and enhancing the existing model.”

In October, councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing management and modernisation, said: “The Resident Involvement Panel doesn’t replace any organisations or groups, but as lots of structures for engagement we have in place have not changed

since the 1980s, with new technology and social media we want to find new ways to listen, consult and communicate with residents.”

Recommendations by the panel will go to a sounding panel of 80 tenants and for wider consultation, before final recommendations are published in January 2019.

It is expected that online communication – and social media - will be a big focus.

Kind-hearted Millwall and West Ham fans who put aside their fierce football rivalry are amoung those to fundraise for the 4-year-old

ISLA CATON, the toddler battling Neuroblastoma, is said by her parents to be responding very well to treatment in Barcelona – with mum Nikki saying she feels like she has “won the lottery.”

The West Ham fan has been receiving the treatment involving chemo and an antibody combination abroad since August this year - a treatment not available in the UK – after relapsing.

The four-year-old had twelve spots of Neuroblastoma – a rare form of cancer affecting babies and small children when she travelled to Barcelona, but now amazingly only has two spots following the treatment.

Speaking to the News from Barcelona, doting mum Nikki said: “We’ve been

here for nearly three months, and have done two rounds of the treatments. We got the results on Friday (October 26th.)

“It’s absolutely amazing. We’re really shocked, it’s more than we had ever hoped for.

“We’re still a little bit in shock!”

She added that it was the perfect birthday present for little Isla – who turned four while in the country.

The test result also showed that Isla’s bone marrow and central nervous system is also all-clear.

Further results from the chemo and antibody treatments are expected in December.

The positive result is after only two rounds of the treatment, with a typical course expected to last six rounds.

In a statement on Facebook the family said they felt like they had “won the lottery”, thanking well-wishers for their donations and support.

They added: “Thank you all so much

for praying and sending love, we are 100% convinced this makes all the difference, so now let’s get the fundraising going again strong and get the money for the vaccine and let’s beat this b*****d disease for good.”

The family are still needing to fundraise for Isla to receive treatment for an earlier relapse at the Bercelona hospital, as well as for a vaccine trial in the USA which it is hoped would prevent the disease from returning.

The youngster has already suffered two relapses despite gruelling chemotherapy.

The family, who are from Stratford, also appeared on national television last week, as part of Channel 4’s Stand Up to Cancer appeal.

An emotional video, broadcast to millions on Friday 26th October, featured Isla and her family talking about Isla’s journey with Neuroblastoma since being diagnosed in March 2017.

In the appeal, mum Nikki said: “We

were pretty settled and a normal family.

She was ill for about three months before she was diagnosed and our world just crumbled around us.

“We went from a happy family to just... shock. She was so unwell, and she had a tumour that grew to 22cm.”

Dad Michael added: “I remember sitting there looking at her thinking how lucky I am to have another child and another child this perfect.

“Naturally as a parent all you want to do is protect your kids but in this situation you’re helpless.”

Nikki told the News that the family had agreed to the televised appeal because they wanted to raise awareness of Neuroblastoma – a condition many are still not aware of.

She said: “Bradley Lowery shone a light on it but people still don’t know what it is. But if it [the appeal] helped someone else, then it’s done some good.”

Keen Sunderland fan Bradley Lowery sadly died from the condition aged only six in July last year.

Isla’s family are hoping to raise £600,000 to pay for Isla’s relapse treatments and the vaccine trial, and have so far raised nearly £390,000.

Around £200,000 has been used for the treatment in Barcelona, while the other funds will go towards treatment for another relapse and the vaccine trial to hopefully prevent the cancer from returning.

Kind-hearted Millwall and West Ham fans who have put aside their fierce football rivalry are among those to fundraise for the Hammers fan.

Lions fans have raised over £30,000 for Isla, while in May a West Ham fan walked 72 miles – including paying a visit to the Den – in order to raise £4,000.

Payments ‘not supported by government sources’ EXCLUSIVE

THE DISTRICT auditor has stepped in after claims by the Lib Dem opposition that Southwark Labour’s ‘golden goodbye’ payments for outgoing council cabinet members are ‘unlawful’.

It is believed a decision may be reached before Christmas – but it is unclear whether the Lib Dems and the council would seek a court challenge to settle the legal argument once and for all.

Southwark Council amended its constitution two years ago to allow payments for cabinet members stepping down either by resignation or reshuffle – with a total of £24,186 paid out so far. The council says these types of payments are lawful, but the News can exclusively reveal this position is not backed up by legal interpretations from the House of Commons Library, and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

In light of this, the Liberal Democrats have now asked the district auditor to reach their own conclusion.

Councillor Anood Al-Samerai, Lib Dem opposition leader in Southwark, told the paper: ‘It is disgusting that the Labour party is using public money to pay off their own councillors. Why should local taxpayers pay thousands to councillors who decide to resign months in advance or are replaced in a reshuffle? No other council in the country does this and we think it is unlawful. £24,000 this year is a huge amount of money for the average Southwark resident and could be far better spent on paying for an extra police officer.

“All money should be returned, all future payments should be withheld and an inquiry should investigate why these payments were allowed in the first place.”

The total amount of ‘golden goodbyes’ paid out so far is £24,186, with ex-cabinet members Fiona Colley netting £8,062, Maisie Anderson; £4,031, Barrie Hargrove; £8,062 and Ian Wingfield; £4,031 after the May 3 local election.

Cabinet members are entitled to the equivalent of four weeks of their special allowance salary as a parting payment, on top of another week for every year they have served in cabinet – up to a total of thirteen weeks. In documents seen by the News, Lord Bourne, a minister from the previously named department of Local

Government, responding to a question on redundancy pay to councillors on November 17, 2016, said: “The rules are clear that allowances are paid on a pro rata basis should a councillor lose office or, is no longer required to undertake a specific duty, during the course of a year. The rules make no provision for allowances to be paid as a result of loss of office or no longer performing specific duties.”

An analyst from the House of Common’s library backed up Lord Bourne’s stance – confirming: “I think that this provision rules out any form of severance payment’.

Southwark Council has defended the payments, citing the Localism Act 2011,

and its caveat that ‘a local authority has power to do anything that individuals may do’. But the News can reveal that this explanation appears to hold no truck with the ministry of housing, communities and local government, with an official stating in May of this year that although it cannot comment on the legality of this individual case, ‘which would ultimately be for the courts’, it confirmed that hypothetical exit payments would be ‘unlawful’ and ‘Government has no plans to change its position on this issue’.

The allegation of the payments being ‘unlawful’depends on interpretations of the 2011 Localism Act and 2003 Local

Authorities (Members’ Allowances) (England) Regulations Act. The Lib Dems believe they have a strong case – but having the finance and will to take it all the way to court is another matter entirely.

The scheme has been controversial since it was introduced in 2016, when Labour council leader Peter John described it as a ‘small payment’, but the Lib Dem councillor Damian O’Brien said it was ‘the sort of self-indulgent nonsense you’d expect at Goldman Sachs – not in public service.’

Labour have maintained the payments – which for the financial year 2017/18 used a weekly rate of £671.87 before tax – are to help attract and retain diverse cabinet members. In a response to the News questioning whether Southwark Council was aware its position was being assessed by the auditor, Doreen Forrester-Brown, director of law and democracy, said: “We have not been made aware of any such investigation or disputes from any other government departments regarding these payments.

“The decision to support these payments was taken and approved by council assembly in March 2016 and legal implications and regulations were fully considered at the time, and included in the report that went to assembly, as was the reasoning behind the decision which was the desire for the cabinet and council to reflect the borough and all its diversity and to remove those disincentives that disproportionately affect those without alternative financial means.”

Report shows local children Takeaways have with shocking dental decay increased despite Southwark having the highest child obesity figures katherine@southwarknews.co.uk

FORTY PER cent of children seen

by King’s College Hospital over two years for tooth decay so serious they needed surgery were known to social services, a new report reveals.

Figures published last Thursday, October 26, in the British Dental Journal, show that from January 2015 to January 2017, 40 per cent of the children needing a type of surgery called maxillofacial surgery at the hospital were already known to the authorities.

The surgery, given under anaesthetic, treated potentially life-threatening infections in the face and neck caused by severely decaying teeth.

In total, twenty-seven children aged between two and fifteen years needed the specialist treatment, which could have been avoided with correct oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist – appointments which are free on the NHS for children.

Forty-one per cent of the children had first been seen by their dentist before being referred to hospital, but just over a third had gone straight to A&E. Over half were shockingly young – between five and eight years old. All the children treated had to have teeth removed and cuts made in the swelling to drain the infection.

The report’s findings spurred King’s to introduce new procedures for children admitted with these types of severe

infections. All children in A&E with similar problems will now be risk assessed for neglect and referred to the safeguarding team accordingly.

King’s College Hospital-based authors Kathy Fan, a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and consultant paediatric dentist Marielle Kabban, both say dentists can play a role in spotting child neglect.

“Dental decay in children is a preventable disease and access to NHS dental services is entirely free for children. Therefore these children presenting late with acute dentofacial infection are suffering dental neglect that may be an indicator of wider neglect,” Dr Fan said.

“Over half of the children we cared for were aged between five and eight, and indicates this age group is at greatest risk of harm.

“Sadly, by the time we treated the children they would already have suffered a sustained period of oral neglect, and probably been in pain.”

THE NUMBER of Southwark takeaways has increased, meaning the borough has an above average number of fastfood outlets, new data reveals.

An analysis of ONS data, conducted by the BBC and shared with the News through the Shared Data Unit, reveals that Southwark has 68 fast food outlets per 100,000 people – an increase from 58 outlets per 100,000 residents just eight years ago.

The rising number of fast food outlets in the borough means that Southwark has a higher than national average of takeaway shops, which is 61 outlets per 100,000 people.

An additional fifty fast-food shops – including pizza places and popular chicken and chip shops – have opened in the borough since 2010.

Obesity is a key issue in Southwark, with 58.8% of adults and 43% of children in year 6 in the borough being classified as obese or overweight.

According to a council report commissioned on the issue two years ago, entitled ‘Southwark Healthy Weight Strategy 2016 – 2021’, the percentage of kids who are overweight in Year 6 was the highest in the country.

The report found that the ease of obtaining fast-food was one of the main drivers of childhood obesity, stating: “Many people talked particularly about chicken and chip shops and other fast food outlets where food was cheap and accessible. Children and young people themselves viewed fast food and unhealthy food as desirable.

“For older children with their own money they talked about how cheap,

convenient and accessible it was.”

The report also found that deprived areas of the borough were more likely to experience high rates of obesity, with the highest rates being found in Walworth, Rotherhithe and Peckham.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety and public health, said that the New Southwark Plan would prevent takeaways from opening within 400m of a school once adopted, a policy already being implemented in Peckham and Nunhead.

She said: “We are one of the first councils in England to commission a free healthy weight training course for both healthcare and nonhealthcare workers in the borough, so they are better equipped to openly and confidently talk about weight management.

“As one of the only London boroughs to offer universal free, healthy school meals and free fruit to all primary school children and free access to leisure centres for all residents through our Free Swim & Gym programme, we have demonstrated our commitment to improving the health of all residents across the borough.”

Cllr David Noakes, health spokesman for the opposition Lib Dems, said: “News that there has been an increase in takeaway restaurants in Southwark is a real challenge, as we already have some of the highest obesity rates in England.

“While the occasional takeaway is fine, the council’s responsibility for public health means we have an important role in giving residents the information and the opportunities to live active and healthy lives and using our planning powers to regulate the location of takeaways, particularly in relation to schools.”

‘Don’t turn a blind eye to our families in danger’ urge local Sierra Leoneans katherine@southwarknews.co.uk

SIERRA LEONEANS in Southwark joined MPs Neil Coyle and Harriet Harman at Downing Street on Monday, as they handed in petition detailing alleged human rights abuses in the West African country and called on the government not to ‘turn a blind eye’.

Coyle told the News: “There is a vibrant Sierra Leonean community here in Southwark and many have come to me to tell me of their fears and concerns

for friends and relatives back in Sierra Leone.

“The UN Special Rapporteur condemned the state of human rights in the country just last week and it seems the situation is worsening.

“I supported our community to hand over the petition at 10 Downing Street and I hope the Prime Minister will exert more pressure on Sierra Leone to address concerns.

“I am taking Southwark Sierra Leone community representatives to meet the Minister for Africa later this year to ensure the UK Government does not turn a blind eye.”

Witness to London Bridge Terror Attacks pens poems on the ordeal

A POET who was involved in the London Bridge terror attack last June is to release a collection about his traumatic experiences.

Richard Osmond, 31, was drinking with friends in the Katzenjammers Bierkeller in Borough on a stag do when police officers stormed the building and told everyone to get down on the floor.

Only metres away, armed terrorists had driven into pedestrians on London Bridge, before going on a stabbing rampage, killing eight.

The writer, who also works as a wild food forager, told the News that he used poetry “as a way of processing the events of that night.”

Emergency services put the beer bar on lockdown to secure the area, and to treat injured people at the scene.

Mr Osmond has now written a collection about the tragedy – called Rock, Paper, Scissors, after the game that led the writer and his friends to be in the bar at the time – due to be released in June 2019.

He said: “The collection is a response to the way information flowed at the time [of the attack].

“There’s a lot of disconnect between the archetypal narrative and how you actually experienced it.

“We didn’t know what was going on at all. We were in this space of confusion, and I explore that in the book and how you find yourself in that space of confusion in other areas of your life.

“Poetry allows you to sit in that space of confusion and explore it.”

The poet performed the central poem of the collection at a South Bank event on Tuesday, for a twentieth anniversary of the Foyle Young Poets of the Year award, which Mr Osmond won aged 17.

The book is a third detailing his experiences of the tragedy, said the writer, a third translations of Beowulf, in which barbarians storm into a beer hall, and a third passages from the Qur’an.

The poet said that “in a way, it could be quite controversial” – but that he hoped it would help “liberate the Qu’ran from some of the more extreme interpretations.”

Mr Osmond’s collection Rock, Paper, Scissors, will be published by Picador on June 13th 2019.

The writer’s previous collection, Useful Verses, won the Seamus Heaney First Collection Poetry Prize.

LEDBURY ESTATE WILL NOT FACE THE BULLDOZER PECKHAM

THE LEDBURY Estate’s tower blocks will be fully refurbished and not demolished, after plans for the estate’s future were approved by Southwark Council’s cabinet on Tuesday night.

As reported by the News in August 2017, the towers’ gas supply was turned off after it emerged that the buildings could be vulnerable to collapse if there was ever a gas explosion.

Shockingly, engineering work meant to strengthen the blocks, in the wake of the Ronan Point tower block collapse in Newham in 1968, may never have taken place – and Southwark Council did not have the paperwork to confirm either way. The Ledbury’s towers were built from 1968-70.

A new heating system was installed and extra fire safety put in place, but with long-term redevelopment needed to strengthen the tower blocks, residents were given the option of staying or leaving – with all fasttracked onto the band one housing list.

On Tuesday evening, Southwark Council’s cabinet voted on recommended plans - drafted with residents’ backing - for refurbishing the four high rise towers, with the cost

partly met by building new homes on land next door. At least half of these new homes will be council homes.

The complete refurbishment will include strengthening work, new lifts, windows, rooves and lighting.

Speaking to the News before Tuesday’s vote, a Ledbury Action Group spokesperson said: “Where many other Large Panel System owners around the UK are discovering similarly serious problems and simply opting for demolition, Southwark are instead taking a unique position by attempting a newly designed structural strengthening and fire-stopping programme to the Ledbury tower blocks.

“This unprecedented design solution will undoubtedly attract a great deal of attention, both from those in the industry, as well as other local authorities and the ministry of housing, communities and local government.

“We are all very keen to see how the first pilot tests pan out, as this will truly be a landmark moment, determining the future of many Large Panel System blocks around the country.

“All eyes are on Southwark now. It’s admirable that they’ve listened to the residents’ thoughts and wishes and are giving this a go.’

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “We know it has been a difficult time for many people but I feel we are at a point

where we can start moving forward and get this work done to fix the homes in the four tower blocks, and use this opportunity to build new, family homes on the estate to help meet costs and help local families living in overcrowded conditions.

This summer, Ledbury residents, leaseholders and those who have left but have the right to return had four main options put to them, including basic work to make the blocks safe, more extensive refurbishment with

new homes built which would help fund the work, a mixture of some highstandard refurbishment and partial demolition with homes replaced, and full-scale demolition and replacement of all four blocks.

Reacting to the news, Tanya Murat, chair of Southwark Defend Council Housing said: "We welcome the Council's announcement for full refurbishment of the towers, as there's the ever present danger of social cleansing which normally happens when council blocks are demolished.

“But there must be a genuine right to return for council tenants, which means a lifetime secure tenancy on their existing council rents in homes at least as big as the ones they've moved out of.

“We were shocked to hear that Ledbury tenants were being offered a "council home" at Sylvan Grove, on rents that many could not afford.

“The only real solution to the housing crisis is the building of council homes on council land, not private housing for rich people."

Lib Dem opposition leader Anood Al Samerai said: “The council has repeatedly acted as if it can ignore the residents of the Ledbury Estate.

Council plans to curb ‘Right to Buy’ powers

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL is petitioning the government for powers to curb Right to Buy, to help stem the loss of council houses in the borough.

More than 1,300 homes in Southwark have moved into private hands since the discount on right to buy was deepened in 2012 by the coalition government.

Often, they are sub-let to renters eligible for council homes – but with more than 25,000 people waiting on the list, the likelihood of them getting a council home anytime soon is often tiny.

Now, Southwark’s Labour-run council is taking a strong line and lobbying central government to give it extra powers to limit the number of Right to Buy purchases.

These could include a ‘one in one out’ cap, limited sub-letting of right to buy properties at social rent levels, and pushing the government to ensure right to buy cash can be put towards replacement homes.

Leo Pollak, cabinet member for social regeneration, great estates and new council homes said: “While we don’t begrudge any individual tenant exercising their right to buy, with over 25,000 people on the housing register we have been looking into ways of mitigating the impact of right to buy in the borough.

“We have a responsibility to maintain the existing stock of council homes at council rents in the borough, which is why we’re looking to advance two ideas for better maintaining the overall stock of social homes.

“As in our manifesto and council plan, we are seeking advice on the legal risks attached to placing covenants in new right to buy leases compelling, or otherwise incentivising, all subsequent sub-letting to be at a social rent.

“We are also lobbying government to introduce a ‘one in-one out’ policy for Right to Buy, effectively capping the number of applications in one year based on the number of council homes completions in the previous year.

“Further to this, we are also arguing for full and flexible retention of right to buy receipts where current government rules limit in replacing lost homes as the receipts can only be used to cover 30 per cent of the development cost of a replacement home, and have to be spent within narrow timeframes.”

The Right to Buy scheme helps eligible council tenants in England to buy their home with a discount of up to £108,000.

In 2015, Cameron’s government announced plans to extend Right to Buy to include housing association tenants as a flagship policy. The plans were widely criticised by housing campaigners.

Stabbed teenager arrested on ‘suspicion of GBH’ while hospitalised

A 19-YEAR-OLD man, who was found suffering a stab wound in Bermondsey on Monday has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm on a 60-year-old, police told the News.

Officers were called to an altercation on Spa Road, by the Neckinger Estate, at 7:51pm Monday October 29, and found a 60-year-old man suffering from a head injury.

The victim told police that he had been approached by three men, who said

something to him – before one of them attacked him and ran off.

Shortly afterwards, at around 8:18pm, officers were called again by the London Ambulance Service to nearby Vauban Street to reports of a man, aged 19, suffering a stab wound and facial injuries.

The 19-year-old told police he had been walking along Alscot Road, which joins Spa Road, when a group of men got out of a car and started attacking him.

It is not clear whether this is in retaliation for the attack on the 60-yearold man.

The 19-year-old was rushed to hospital,

where his injuries were deemed non lifethreatening and he was later arrested.

A police spokesperson told the News the teenager was arrested “at the hospital on suspicion of grievous bodily harm in relation to the earlier incident in Spa Road.

“He remains in hospital.”

The 60-year-old man was also taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries and has since been discharged.

Inquiries continue.

MORE THAN six-and-a-half thousand homes were still lying empty across Southwark during last month’s empty homes week, the latest figures reveal.

Southwark is London’s ‘empty homes capital’, with more empty homes than the neighbouring boroughs of Lambeth, Lewisham and Tower Hamlets combined – and this figure has risen every year for the last seven. To date, nearly a thousand are council homes.

The Lib Dem opposition to Southwark’s Labour-run council have long argued for the council to create a new empty homes unit tasked with bringing them back into use. They have also advocated using compulsory purchase orders, forcibly to take over properties left empty long-term.

Speaking during national Empty Homes Week, held from Monday, October 15, to Sunday, October 21, Southwark Liberal Democrats Housing spokesperson, Councillor Hamish McCallum said: “This problem of empty homes has been allowed to fester for years and balloon out of all proportion.

“In practice, the council has the worst record in the country.

“With rising homelessness on our streets, spiraling private rent and chronic housing shortage the council needs to throw the kitchen sink at it.

“Instead of cutting the numbers of empty homes officers down to the bare minimum, it should set up a dedicated unit.

“I’ve written to the Southwark Cabinet member responsible and hope that they will finally start taking the matter seriously.”

Southwark Council disputes the interpretation of the figures, arguing that the calculations include homes that have been empty for only a day, and this ‘snapshot’ does not represent the number of homes empty long-term.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Housing Management and Modernisation told the News: “We know that there is a housing crisis in London, which is why in our manifesto we pledged to tackle empty homes by turning around council voids within 28 days so people waiting for homes get them sooner.

“However, the Lib Dem suggestion that the council starts compulsory purchasing privately owned homes across the borough is unworkable and would cost the council millions of

pounds which could otherwise be spent on building the new houses that our borough so desperately needs.

“Let’s not forget that whenever given the opportunity, the Lib Dems make the housing crisis worse. In the last four years that they ran the council, they only built three new council homes, they cared so little about housing that they didn’t even have a housing department, and when in government, they increased the Right to Buy discount, making it harder for councils to retain council housing.

“Instead of proposing half-baked, unworkable ideas, the Lib Dems should constructively work with the Labourled Housing and Environment Commission, which will be prioritising tackling empty homes this year.”

PLANS TO create a public space on Old Kent Road where residents can learn more about huge regeneration plans in their area have been given a boost, after the Mayor of London pledged £15,000 towards the project.

As the News reported last month, Action OKR, a network of community groups from the area, is fundraising for an ‘Urban Room’, where residents and businesses can drop in and view easy to understand planning documents.

Southwark Council’s 2017 draft Area Action Plan includes a potential 20,000 new homes, Bakerloo Line extension, and the creation of new green spaces for commuters.

Urban Room backers include Vital OKR, a business network, Southwark Group of Tenant Organisations and Southwark Law Centre.

“It’s a really interesting project. It’s focused on providing a locally run space for a broader, more meaningful type of engagement with the community about this future.

The crowdfunding campaign currently has 112 backers with £21,932 pledged.

The group needs to reach their target of £59,115 by December 17 in order to receive the funds.

NEW POLICE figures show that nearly 300 rapes have been recorded in Southwark in the last year, with the borough in London’s top five for total numbers of sex crimes.

According to crime statistics released by the Met online, Southwark had nearly one thousand sex crimes recorded from September 2017 to September 2018. The only boroughs with higher figures were Westminster, Lambeth, Newham and Croydon.

Shockingly, according to figures available up to September of this year, 292 rapes were recorded in the borough throughout the last twelve months, a 12.3 per cent increase on the year before, with 256.

Nunhead and Queen’s Road had the highest number of sexual offences (63), of which a staggering 26 were recorded as rapes.

And nearly half Southwark’s neighbourhoods had the number of recorded rapes – vaginal, anal, or oral – in the double figures.

What the figures do not show is how many incidents involved attackers who were known to their victims, or where exactly they took place. The data also does not show the ages of those attacked.

Residents have told the News how prostitution is affecting their Walworth estates, with used condoms left littering communal

stairways and anti-social behaviour leaving families worried.

Statistics show that in the last twelve months Southwark is fourth highest out of all London boroughs for recorded crime, with nearly

38,000 crimes recorded in that period – up from 33,000 the previous year - with Lambeth just behind. The majority of offences were classified as ‘theft and handling’.

North Walworth is most affected by violence and drugs, but London Bridge and West Bermondsey is the most crimeridden neighbourhood overall, with 3,380 crimes recorded in the twelve month period. Dulwich Hill, meanwhile, is the safest, with just 488 crimes recorded.

Southwark Police have previously told the News the areas near London Bridge and Tower Bridge are often targeted due to their night-time economy and heavy tourism – especially with moped crime. Bicycle theft is also highest in West Bermondsey and London Bridge.

The neighbourhood with the most recorded ‘violence against the person’ crimes was North Walworth. It tops the chart on assault with injury, wounding / GBH, offensive weapons (joint with Old Kent Road), and common assault.

North Walworth is also most affected by drug crime, with 203 recorded crimes, followed by Peckham with 159, and Faraday, with 158.

The previous twelve months, North Walworth was also the ward most affected by drug crime, with 236 offences.

When it comes to criminal damage, Rye Lane and London Bridge and West Bermondsey score particularly highly.

Overall crime figures for Southwark

From September 2017 to September 2018, there were 37,606 crimes recorded.

The majority were classed as theft and handling (14,523), followed by violence against the person, with 11,317.

There were more than threeand-a-half thousand burglaries, and more than two thousand drug offences. Nearly two thousand robberies – theft by force or with the threat of violence – were recorded in the same period.

And, shockingly, there were 915 sexual offences, of which 292 were rapes.

OR MANY years this paper has debated the pros and cons of councillor salaries invariably using this column to question pay rises of the cabinet and asking whether the residents of the borough were getting good value for money.

Ultimately, we came to the conclusion that proper remuneration for the people making the key decisions for the future of this borough was necessary. If you don’t pay decent wages, you run the risk of restricting the range of person who can be a councillor, or having them simply move on within a year or two. And senior council officers, (on much higher wages), need proper political direction in order to carry out their duties effectively.

That being said, it comes as no surprise that the opposition Lib Dems are questioning the new practice, brought in under the current Labour administration of handing out ‘golden handshakes’ to departing cabinet members - to the tune of over £24,000 this year. This means that someone deemed fit for the chop in a cabinet reshuffle, or someone who decides to leave and pursue a different career, is eligible for a pay-off.

In the private sector, if an employee is sacked, a payout may well be made. Yet this would be part of negotiations in a dispute - not automatic reward for failure. And someone who resigns will simply have to work their notice, so the idea of handing in your resignation and getting a pay-off just beggars belief.

The district auditor is looking into the legality of this move, according to the Lib Dems, whilst central government sources told us this week that it was likely to be looked at unfavourably.

The council claims it will help to attract and retain diverse cabinet members - but it should be the salary and opportunity to serve the public that does this, not a pay-off for being let go or for going elsewhere. And as for the argument that it was approved by council assembly - given that the assembly has a thumping Labour majority, is it a surprise that they voted this through for their cabinet, and hence, themselves?

OW DO you tell a small business owner, trying to make a living by setting up a fast food shop, that they’re going to be banned from operating?

Imagine the Nanny State headlines in the papers, and that probably includes this one too.

But it’s becoming increasingly hard to justify the council not taking strong action to curb the growth of such outlets, given the damning health statistics that see obesity in nearly two thirds of adults in the borough, and most shockingly, in 43% of children around the ages of ten or eleven.

The borough now has an above average number of fast food outlets and the council is right to be taking the issue on, and preventing takeaways from opening within 400 metres of a school. Even more action is needed.

Coupled with our story this week on major surgery for young children with tooth decay, these statistics make for very depressing reading.

The key point is that the council is clearly more willing to play the blame game ( it's the Lib-Dems, it's the Tories, it's the Police etc ) and not focusing on the fact that in the real world of the here and now, knife crime is getting totally out of control.

And that's in part because police numbers (and morale) are at their lowest levels ever.

When you, 'play' politics with lives on the line, people die. Stating that, "a few more police would make no difference" is a nonsense argument.

The local police are under valued, under resourced, under staffed, under equipped, under attack from violent offenders and now undermined by the council.

I would agree with the council that knife crime is a complex issue, but the truth is that if the law is applied and upheld then knife carriers would be

There’s been a loss of more than 1,000 homes for social rent not publicly accounted for IT’S GOOD to see an article regarding Aylesbury social housing

‘We want more social homes by 2030 than 1970s heyday’ Southwark News, 18th October, 2018.

However, the bottom line for the Aylesbury regeneration is that it is based on the permanent loss of 778 “social rent” homes. That is what the planning application says.

The Senior Planning Officer’s Report clearly states: “Net change against baseline [the starting condition on the Aylesbury Estate]: –778 units for social rent” That is what ward politician Paul Fleming, as a trustee of Creation Trust, is promoting: the permanent loss of homes for social rent on the Aylesbury Estate.

Faraday Ward’s labour branch said “In particular, we noted that no other council estate regeneration in our borough under our administration or in the country under a Labour government would be allowed to deliver fewer socially rented homes than were originally on the footprint.”

In the context of the recent permanent loss of more than 900 homes for social rent on the Heygate Estate, this is an extraordinary statement.

Overall, in terms of social housing in southwark, the GLA Annual Monitoring Report for 2016/2017, published a few weeks ago, claims that there were a total of 84 homes for social rent delivered in Southwark over the 3 years 2014 to

2017. That is an average of 24 per year.

At that rate it will take Southwark Council 393 years – not 25 years – to deliver the “11,000 new council homes” they have promised.

But these GLA Annual Monitoring Report figures do not include the loss of more than 900 homes for social rent demolished on the Heygate Estate, and they do not include the hundreds of homes for social rent demolished on the Aylesbury Estate, so far.

In Southwark over the past eight years of the Labour administration, there has been a loss of more than 1,000 homes for social rent which are not publicly accounted for.

However, my concern is what thought has been given, if any, to traffic calming measures that should be introduced to cope with the fact that the road outside the Playground/café is regularly used by cyclists.

At present there are no barriers and young children simply wander across this road from the Playground /Cafe onto the Common.

Although I am sure that most (but certainly not all) cycle with care even a low speed impact with a child or children could cause serious or fatal injuries to both the child or children and the cyclist.

Let us hope that this problem can be given serious consideration at this stage, rather than having to wait for a tragic accident to happen.

A BID to illuminate historic Rotherhithe buildings ahead of the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower has received £20,000 from the mayor Sadiq Khan on Thursday.

The Illuminate Rotherithe legacy project, the brainchild of friends Clare Armstrong and Sheila Taylor, has been crowdfunding for a month to illuminate six historic buildings, making them visible from the Thames from up to several miles away.

The £33,000 crowdfunding drive for a feasibility study into the project has

received £20,000 from the mayoral Crowdfund London fund – meaning it now only has to raise a further £9,000 by December 17.

Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, Jules Pipe, said: “All Londoners should feel that they are part of the regeneration of their neighbourhoods and crowdfunding is a really effective way of giving people a stake in their part of the city.

“The Mayor’s Crowdfund London programme empowers Londoners to bring about positive change in their local area and I would encourage people to support these innovative projects.”

The mayor’s support for the project means that Clare and Sheila, of

Rotherhithe and Bermondsey respectively, will attend a special event at City Hall to present their bid.

So far the bid has attracted 116 backers, with support coming from both the local area and as far away as Germany.

It hopes to put a bit of neglected Rotherhithe history on the map, lighting up buildings including the Brunel Museum and the Mayflower Pub. Tessa Gooding, 33, undertook the sponsored walk on Saturday in aid of the 999 Club – a Deptford-based charity which provides respite and advice services to the homeless.

Ms Gooding, who was accompanied for a large part of her twelve-hour walk by her rescue dog Thali, has raised £999 for the charity, well over her £750 target.

She said: “The money raised is now at £999 – I thought that was quite appropriate given that it’s for the 999 Club!

“Last week I couldn’t really sleep because I was worrying about it. For the last four miles I even had to walk backwards just to use different muscles.

“But I had different friends join me for the walk which really helped. The dog was with me for the first 21 miles so that really helped.”

She added that she did have breaks during the tiring escapade – including a well-earned bacon sandwich stop.

The money raised by Tessa, who is a co-founder of the Surrey Quays social enterprise, Urban Patchwork, will go towards the charity to fund its activities

including a drop-in centre on Deptford Broadway and a night shelter.

Tim Fallon, CEO of the 999 Club, said: “We’re really grateful to both Tessa and her brother Toby at Urban Patchwork for their tireless commitment to raising crucial funds to help homeless people in South London.

“Donations are a significant part of our income and are invaluable in allowing us to run a day centre all year round and to providing housing advice, benefits support, skills workshops and guidance in finding work, which all help to empower vulnerable people to have a new start.”

Now Tessa has plans to make the walk a yearly fundraiser – although the length might not be as long as the challenging 32 miles.

Another fine mess for shopkeeper PECKHAM

A RYE Lane supermarket has been handed a £1,785 fine after its owner admitted to flytipping at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court this month.

The owner of Family Carnation supermarket, based at 151a Rye Lane, appeared in court on Sunday, October 14.

According to Southwark Council, one of its enforcement officers witnessed a Family Carnation employee dumping rubbish, including two cardboard boxes of fruit and vegetable cuttings, on the pavement outside on Rye Lane, with owner, Amanuel Fissehaye later admitting in a formal police interview that the waste came from his shop.

The council said Fissehaye, aged 51 and from Harbridge Avenue, SW15, had been fined in 2017 for a similar offence, after he was found to have illegally dumped rubbish bags directly into the back of a Southwark bin lorry. He was subsequently handed a £1,370 fine.

He will now pay a fine of £641, with costs of £1080, and victim surcharge of £64.

The council says last year it collected more than five thousand tonnes of fly tipped waste, costing taxpayers more than a million pounds - money that could be put to other good uses.

Woman attacked in busy high street and police say not a single person helped her

SOUTHWARK POLICE launched an appeal on Monday after an unknown man tried to grab and drag a woman away in a broad daylight attack on Borough High Street.

Police received reports of the alleged attack on Monday 8th October at around 15:30pm. The victim told officers that the man had slung his arms around her before forcefully grabbing her and attempting to drag her into nearby Talbot

The victim managed to break free after a struggle with the unknown attacker.

However, police said that despite Borough High Street being full of witnesses to the attack, shockingly noone stepped in to help the victim.

The suspect is described as a male, of mixed race, aged 30s, who has vitiligo.

The victim also described him as having black hair, possibly in dreadlocks, dark eyes and wearing ill-fitting clothes and a large brown coat.

Detective Constable Sam Cafferty said: “At the time of this attack there were

plenty of witnesses, as Borough High Street was very busy. “ Sadly, no one chose to help the victim, but they may help our investigation by contacting us to provide an account of what they witnessed.

“Unfortunately, there is no CCTV of the attack and the victim is not sure which direction the suspect left in. We’d like to hear from anyone that saw a man of this description in the Borough area who can assist our investigation.”

AFTER A non-fatal stabbing on Denmark Hill in July, police have now released an image of a man they want to speak to who 'may be connected to the incident'.

The attack happened at five to midnight on Sunday, July 15, as the 30year old male victim and his friend left a pub on Denmark Hill.

Breakthrough study which get kids active by playing an online game DULWICH

A SCHOOL in West Dulwich has revealed that children exercised more by wearing movement sensor trackers in a new study.

Rosendale Primary School encouraged its early years’ pupils to become more active by wearing a tracker that monitors the duration and intensity of physical activity, to research children’s activity habits.

Pupils wearing the ReimaGO tracker, either in their pockets or as wrist bands, for a full school day were active for nearly three hours, tripling the World Health Organisation’s recommendations, which state that only one hour of physical activity a day is needed for children.

The latest Change4Life data shows that just 23 per cent of boys and 20 per cent of girls meet this target.

Tonie Healy, mum of Aimee, one of the children who took part in the study, has since started trying to become healthier at home by getting involved in more exercise.

Ms Healy said: “They enjoy being able to work for something and the more they exercise, the more levels they build in the game.

“It makes them enjoy things more.”

With one in five children now starting primary school overweight and obese, rising to more than a third by the time they leave, finding ways to encourage physical activity among the young is vital.

Rosendale year one teacher, Jo Stainton, said: “I have worked with kids who are unhappy, unhealthy, aren’t engaged in their learning and the difference when kids are active is huge. You do get so much more out of them.

“They’re much more responsive, they are interested and they are happy and obviously that’s the most important part of it.”

AN INSPIRATIONAL sports coach from Peckham reached the finals for Disability Coach of the Year last week.

Among hundreds of nominations, Joanne Sykes (pictured top left) outshone the rest and was named a finalist for her dedication to her multisport programme with London youth charity, Greenhouse Sports, based at Highshore School on Monday, October 22, 2018.

Greenhouse Sports CEO John Herriman said: “Coach Jo’s programme at Highshore is about more than getting the young people active.

“She works closely with her students to increase confidence, independence, and leadership – skills that impact all areas of their lives.

Man gets cancer care at hospital for which he’d just raised money

James Powell was diagnosed with testicular cancer in October 2017 and was referred to the Cancer Centre at Guy’s. The 36 year old had an orchidectomy (the removal of one or both testicles) and has been cancer-free for almost a year.

James said: “I was healthy and just looking to do something fun for a worthy cause, so my diagnosis just one month later was a shock and completely unexpected.

“Following the surgery, I thought I’d need chemotherapy but in the end the best recommended treatment for my case was surveillance with monthly blood tests and regular scans.

“I was lucky that it was caught and treated at an early stage so I’ve been able to carry on living a normal life and have tried to keep a sense of humour about everything.”

He added: “I knew that a lump would be a sign of cancer but my main symptom was swelling so it wasn’t something I immediately associated with a warning sign.

“It’s important that men go and get checked out if they notice any changes because they’ll be able to take action

quicker if there is something wrong – you don’t want to have an additional worry thinking you’ve left it too long.”

James, who works for translation service TransPerfect, took on his second Guy’s Urban Challenge at Guy’s Hospital with seven colleagues in September and raised more than £3,200.

Participants raise funds for Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity to support big things and small touches that make the lifesaving cancer care even better. This helps patients and their families to feel really looked after.

James said: “The staff are amazing – everyone from the admin team to the doctors and nurses make me feel welcome and want to make sure I'm doing well – mentally as well as physically.

“After seeing how hard everyone works and how much time and compassion they have for each patient every day, it’s important for me to show my support.”

Dr Sarah Rudman, consultant medical oncologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ who specialises in testicular cancer, said: “Testicular cancer is one of the most treatable types of cancer if it is detected early and treated appropriately, and affects around 2,200 men in the UK each year.”

Manikin could help save lives A MANIKIN called ‘Hal’ is helping doctors and nurses to safely treat patients in emergency situations.

The sophisticated simulation model can have a cardiac arrest in the same way as a human.

This is when a person’s heart suddenly stops pumping blood round their body causing them to fall unconscious and stop breathing.

Hal can breathe, speak, has audible heart and lung sounds, a measurable pulse rate and responds to drugs. If CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is not performed correctly, his condition deteriorates.

Hal is part of a family of simulated patients that belong to Guy’s and St Thomas’ Simulation and Interactive Learning Centre – one of the largest medical simulation centres in the UK. Once a month the model is taken onto the wards at the Trust to run a cardiac arrest scenario.

The team of nurses, doctors and

other healthcare professionals – a mixture of junior and senior staff – are not given any prior warning about the exercise. A cardiac arrest call is made and the staff only know that it is a simulation when they arrive on the scene to find the model.

Since training with Hal started in August 2017, more than 200 staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ have taken part in the cardiac arrest exercise.

Each scenario lasts 15 to 20 minutes and involves between nine and 24 clinical staff.

Following the scenario, the group has a debrief to discuss what went well and what they could have done differently. The whole training session lasts around one hour.

Dr Matthew Hammond-Haley is a junior doctor who recently took part in a simulation exercise in the clinical decision unit at St Thomas’ Hospital. Dr HammondHaley, who was first to arrive on the scene, said: “As a junior

doctor you help to manage very sick patients but there’s always so much senior support around.

“The simulation exercise was a good opportunity to practice what I’m trained to do and to take on a leadership role for longer than normal in a safe, supportive environment. man who completed an ‘urban triathlon’ at Guy’s Hospital was shocked when he found himself receiving cancer treatment there just a month later.-

Public helped raise money for YMCA hut with 150 beds and a billiard room

LIKE MANY places throughout the British Empire, the First World War had a tremendous impact on the Camberwell area, writes Neil Crossfield, writes Neil Crossfield...

Many families would have their husbands, sons and fathers away fighting, but sometimes the war and its terrible consequences were brought far closer to home.

The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) had been founded in 1844 and was part of the muscular Christianity movement so prevalent in the nineteenth century.

It had provided tented canteens for the Territorial Army since the turn of

the century but when war was declared in August 1914, its support of the war effort grew exponentially with the creation of hundreds of YMCA “huts” both at home and abroad.

All across the many theatres of operations, in this World War, troops would find refuge when they saw the red triangle sign, indicating a YMCA centre.

The purpose of the huts was to provide a comfortable and homely space in which troops could relax and try to forget the horrors of the battlefield for a short time.

They could buy good wholesome food, cigarettes, tea or perhaps read a book or even play billiards, chess or draughts.

The YMCA also worked with organisations like the Workers Education Association and the forerunner of the Royal Army Education Corps to put on lectures for the men.

In line with their Christian ethos, the types of entertainment and distractions provided were no doubt an attempt to divert the men away

from the temptations of alcohol and “loose women” when they were away from the front. Troops were even encouraged to sign a temperance pledge.

How well this strategy worked when Camberwell Green was but a short tram ride away from the flesh pots of the West End is unknown, but records later show that the YMCA were paying for medical experts to visit the

front line to warn the troops about the dangers of venereal diseases.

The YMCA also supplied stationery and encouraged the troops to write letters home. This was provided free of charge and was an extremely important part of their work. By 1918 some 930 million pieces of stationery had been sent out by YMCA HQ for distribution amongst those serving.

The huts were provided by private

donations, or as in the case of the one on Camberwell Green, by public subscription.

The YMCA organised “Hut Weeks” to pay for the building and furnishing the huts. The image above shows a large sign advertising the appeal in Camberwell and eventually a total of £3,792 was raised.

Built by J.Mc Manus Ltd, it was opened on Empire Day, 24th May 1917, by various dignitaries including the Countess of Lansborough, the Countess of Wilton and the Mayor of Camberwell, Thomas Coombs.

Run by a Miss Marjorie Butter, the hut had a billiard room, reading rooms and 150 beds for those staying overnight.

Many injured troops from a nearby military hospital would visit the hut to attend concerts and use its facilities.

The hut was visited by the Queen of Roumania, (now Romania) Queen Victoria’s granddaughter.

After the war the hut was sold to the Camberwell Corporation for £1,250 and used as a labour exchange until January 1921 when it was destroyed in a suspicious fire.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark PUBLIC NOTICE: ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 16A THE (RESTRICTION OF TRAFFIC) SPECIAL EVENTS ORDER 2018

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark, hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 16 (a) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

The purpose of the Order is to enable Fire Works Displays and the Annual Remembrance Day Service - Order 2018.

The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from:

(1) entering, exiting or proceeding in Southwark Park Road, between Clements Road and Raymouth Road.

(2) entering, exiting or proceeding in Gataker Street, between Southwark Park Road and Slippers Place.

(3) The existing one way working in Gataker Street and Slippers Place will be made two way for access and egress purposes.

(4) entering, or proceeding in Gallery Road, between Dulwich Common and Burbage Road in a southerly direction.

(5) The existing two way working in Gallery Road, between Dulwich Common and Burbage Road will be suspended to allow for a northerly one way traffic flow system.

MILLWALL FANS are hoping they will see Ted Cheeseman and his new British super-welterweight belt at The Den at the end of this month.

Cheeseman, 23, defeated Reading’s Asinia Byfield at the Copper Box Arena in Hackney Wick last weekend to add to his English and WBA International super-welterweight belts.

Bermondsey’s Cheeseman stretched his unbeaten record to 15-0 and is now looking at a bout with Anthony Fowler, Liverpool’s 27-year-old undefeated former Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

Cheeseman was relentless against Byfield, cutting the ring off and giving

his opponent little breathing room.

Byfield was on the canvass in round five and Cheeseman continued to unload body shots in a dominating performance.

Cheeseman got the unanimous decision – 117-111 (on two judges’ scorecards) and 117-110.

Millwall’s fan on the board, Micky Simpson, is now hoping to arrange for Millwall fan Cheeseman to be presented to Lions supporters before the Championship clash with Bolton on November 24. Cheeseman is part of Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sport stable, and the promoter was already teasing about a north-south showdown next year after his fighter’s victory, taking to social media to say: “[Cheeseman versus Fowler] is a natural fight for 2019 and it’s an absolute war.”

The Lionesses’ top scorer this season, Gabby Ravenscroft, started on

the bench, while club captain Leanne Cowan returned to the fold after being out for six weeks with an ankle injury.

Phillips said: “Gabby has had the flu, she missed two of the three grass sessions last week. It was not tactical or anything she had done wrong, she had just been struggling.”

Phillips also explained Cowan’s substitution at half-time. “It was part of her rehab. The medical staff informed me that she was good to play 45 minutes. She was frustrated when I took her off. I think she is good to go but she was not worth risking.”

The Lionesses play Aston Villa next in the Women’s Championship. Villa are only a point ahead of them in the table and Cowan called for a reaction.

She said: “We need to respond quickly and it starts now. It starts with our recovery [Monday] and our training [Tuesday]. Even though we have had two bad weeks we have to put it behind us.

“Next week is massive for us, it is more or less our cup final. The thing about Villa is that they’re not rubbish.

They’re a good team, they work hard and are hard to break down.

“It will be a real game, but it’s a game we hope to compete a lot more in.”

The Addicks opened the scoring on 24 minutes when Kit Graham’s shot from point-blank range forced Lionesses ‘keeper Chloe Sansom into making a spectacular save but to her dismay the ball fell to Liz Ejupi who stroked it in.

“I can’t explain how it feels, it’s unbelievable,” Garton said.

“Living in south London, it’s a personal thing to me.

“And now we’ve got this belt at Millwall as well.”

Duncan Chapman, co-chair of the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust, was barely able to contain himself when he was asked to sum up his emotions last week. Duncan’s emotional cocktail of exhilaration and relief echoed the feelings of swathes of south-east Londoners as news broke that Dulwich Hamlet FC would be returning to its traditional home at Champion Hill.

Duncan became acquainted with the club through his interest in local politics. He worked for Tessa Jowell, the former MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, for 23 years between 1992 and 2015 when she stood down.

Duncan credits the late MP with providing the club with much-needed support even before its recent surge in popularity.

“Tessa did a lot of work with the club. A few people associated with the club back in the day – Mishi Morath, Paul Griffin and Kevin Holland – attended her memorial service recently. Tessa was there for the launch of the Supporters’ Trust, for the naming of Edgar Kail Way and for a number of matches and community days. She recognised not only a good local club but one, even in those days with much smaller crowds, that reached out to the local community.”

Duncan began attending Dulwich matches regularly from 2012 and became a season-ticket holder two years later. He describes how an unshakeable attachment to the club quickly grew inside him, meaning its off-field crises took up almost all of his spare time.

“As has happened to countless others, the club got under my skin and I became proud to be a supporter” he explained. “I was drawn in, as many are, first as a Supporters’ Trust member, then by putting myself forward for the Trust Board and then, since July, as one of the co-chairs of the Supporters’ Trust.”

Duncan is full of praise for Dulwich’s local rivals, Tooting & Mitcham FC, for letting Hamlet share their ground for the last eight months.

However, like most Hamlet fans he will be glad to see the back of the episode. He bemoans the impact the move had on local fans in particular.

“It was very good of them to let us play there while we were away from Champion Hill but it’s not an easy journey [to Imperial Fields] – I’ve been to almost all of our home games since and I don’t think I’ve taken the same journey twice. It’s a train, a bus, a tram. It also meant that a lot of local residents from the East Dulwich area – our natural fans – have found it a lot harder to get over to Tooting and our attendances have dropped as a result.

“On a good day we’ll get well over 2000 fans [at Champion Hill] which means plenty of business for local

pubs, businesses, and restaurants, so the impact that the move away has had on these local businesses has been quite marked, and having the club back again will be a great benefit for the local area.”

He admits that there were occasions when he feared the club would never return to its East Dulwich home. “It’s something that has crossed my mind during the darkest days but I think everyone associated with the club – the fans and the whole local community – has been resolute in doing whatever they can to get the club back, and having the whole community supporting the club has just been amazing.”

However, Duncan is eager not to dwell on the past, preferring instead to focus on the achievement of realising the return and a bright future ahead. He lavishes thanks on those that kept supporting the club after the eviction, and magnanimously spares praise for Meadow Residential for facilitating the move back.

“It’s time to look to the future, not rake over the difficulties we have had in the past. The recent deal that allowed the club to return to Champion Hill would not have been possible without the contribution of many people - the club and its directors, the 12th Man, the Trust, our fantastic loyal fans, parliamentarians, our pink and blue Mayor, Catherine Rose, and the whole East Dulwich community. Make no mistake though, if representatives of Southwark council and Meadow had not found a way to reach an agreement that put the club first so that it can return on terms that will allow it to thrive, its future would still be bleak today.”

Duncan is attempting to rein in his enthusiasm, and highlights the hard work ahead. “There is still a huge amount of work to do – first to get the stadium ready and then to make sure that the club flourishes and becomes more and more an integral part of the community it serves.

“It’s an unending commitment and an obligation that is owed to those who supported us in our time of need.

I have every confidence that everyone associated with the club will step up and do their bit in whatever way they can.”

However, he cannot suppress a fully deserved gleeful final remark. “As the old saying (almost) goes: ‘The future’s bright – the future’s pink and blue!’”

It was back-to-back league wins for the first time since April. Record signing Ryan Leonard scored his first goal for the club.

There was a first clean sheet in a Millwall shirt for goalkeeper Ben Amos, and a first ‘0’ in the conceded column in thirteen Championship games.

Perhaps not coincidentally, it was Shaun Hutchinson’s first start since August 22, and the Lions completed the game without giving up a single shot on target, Trevoh Chalobah hitting the outside of the post late on.

There was probably only one person at The Den not entirely happy on Saturday and ironically it was Lee Gregory, who had scored two goals.

Gregory was hunting a hat-trick – to go with the two in his Lions career, against Plymouth in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in 2016-16 and Derby in the Championship the season before – but Neil Harris has the bigger picture to consider and right now that includes away games against Brentford and Norwich in wait.

Gregory should take it as a compliment, that he is such an important

player that his manager wanted to take him off to avoid the risk of injury.

The former Halifax striker had scored his sixth and seventh goals of the season, and the odds were short that he would add an eighth, against an Ipswich side that after a positive first 20 minutes looked beaten once Millwall had gone in front.

Gregory was taken off penalty duties this season after missing twice in 201718 from twelve yards, but in and around the six-yard box there are few better in the division.

His first showed his cunning, as he nudged a defender out of the way before chesting down Jake Cooper’s header and flicking home with his left foot. At a price of £250,000 Gregory is surely one of the best value-for-money forwards in the Championship, and whatever Lions fans feel about Ian Holloway they can’t question his judgement in seeing the potential of a non-league electrician and giving him his chance. His opener was in the 26th minute and from then on it felt as if Millwall could fill their boots.

This kind of emphatic win had been coming.

Ipswich had sacked Paul Hurst on Thursday, Paul Lambert announced as his replacement before the game. It’s a huge risk for them appointing the former Norwich City boss – imagine how toxic

the atmosphere would have been at The Den three years ago had there been a former Charlton boss overseeing a difficult start to the season – and Lambert will first have to sort out their defence.

In the 51st minute, when Leonard wound up to take a throw on the left, Ipswich knew what was coming.

Cooper took his place at the near post, marked by two players, and then still managed to flick on Leonard’s excellent fast and flat delivery, evoking memories of Rory Delap at Stoke. Gregory instinctively knew where to be, and his second finish was very similar to his first as he hooked home with his left foot. It moved him level with the legendary Wilf Phillips and Alex Rae in sixteenth on the all-time list of Millwall scorers with 71.

That was Cooper’s fifth assist of the season, to go with two goals, meaning he has been directly involved in more than a third of Millwall’s league goals, the most of any centre-back in the Championship. The only worry is that, after Glasgow Rangers last summer, clubs with bulging pockets could be tempted to have a look at him again in January.

He had gone close to scoring in the first half with a chest-down and volley that went just wide, before his chance came in the 70th minute when Tractor Boys goalkeeper Bartosz Białkowski punched clear, and the midfielder calmly lobbed home from 22 yards. He had big boots to fill after George Saville left, but he is proving adept in the role alongside Shaun Williams in midfield. The £8million for Saville and spending a fraction of that on his replacement looks an astute transaction.

Millwall could have won more handsomely, and Neil Harris said they should have been better at 3-0, but added he didn’t “give a damn”.

It’s onwards and upwards for his side.

SHAUN WILLIAMS has seen punches exchanged between teammates in dressing rooms in his career – but if he feels something needs saying he won’t hesitate to step up.

Millwall boss Neil Harris revealed that Williams made a telling vocal contribution at half-time when his side were 1-0 down to Wigan last week.

Williams then scored from the spot to make it 1-1 before Steve Morison got the winner, and the Lions carried that form into last weekend when they defeated Ipswich Town with a first clean sheet in thirteen games and a third successive home win.

Irish international Williams, 32, is one of a number of level-headed more experienced players in the Millwall dressing room, his calmness reflected in how he plays.

And he feels players should be able to shoulder criticism when it is justified.

“If I felt I had to say something I would always have said it, I was captain of a team at home when I was 22. I’m not a shouter or screamer but I think when I speak people listen. I choose my words wisely,” Williams said.

“If you can’t take criticism you’re in the wrong game. I’ve seen people punch the head off each other at half-time, but it’s just part and parcel of it. It’s a man’s sport and if you’re not comfortable in that environment you shouldn’t be in it.

“As a team we’ve had a lot of criticism from our own fans and from ourselves over the last month or so, and rightly so because results weren’t good enough.

We’ve picked up a few points the last few games but it counts for nothing unless we back it up in the next game.

“I don’t think anyone can get carried away with themselves. We’ve only won a game at the weekend, it’s not like we’re winning every week.”

Millwall have picked up ten points in their last five games, almost double what they managed in the first ten.

That has put them in a better position to achieve the target set in the summer.

Williams said: “It’s the same aim as at the start of the season: to get to 50 points as quickly as possible and see where that takes us. It seems that every team is beating everyone this season, it’s highly competitive from top to bottom. Anyone can beat anyone, you see West Brom doing really well and Derby went and gave them a hiding. It’s really competitive this year.

“We might have been a bit unlucky over the last few weeks but we’ve definitely deserved the points we’ve taken recently.

“Obviously it’s not that many chances we’ve given up. I don’t know what it is, maybe the ‘keeper needs to do a bit better. He’s only got his first clean sheet after shipping quite a few goals. Then again we’re all a team so if one goal goes in it’s not just one person’s fault. Luckily we got our first clean sheet in a while and hopefully we can get a few more.”

As well as wearing the captain’s armband this season in the absence of Shaun Hutchinson and when Steve Morison is on the bench, Williams is now also the Lions’ designated penalty taker, assuming that duty from Lee Gregory.

He has scored 23 out of 25 penalties in his career, though when asked about his process from twelve yards was not going reveal any secrets.

“I’m not going to tell you because it’ll go in the press and give it away!” he said. “I just try to hit the target. If you don’t hit the target you ain’t going to score. I think I scored 20 penalties for Milton Keynes.

“The gaffer just said it to me and Gregs was fine about it. Not that he congratulated me or wished me luck, but he backed me.

“The gaffer has shown faith in me to lead the team out and I’ll wear [the captain’s armband] with pride and honour for this club anytime I can.”

Williams has scored four goals already this season, and eighteen in total for the club.

And he jokes he has one goal target for the season, to better the total of a close neighbour in Biggin Hill. “I just want to have more goals than Jed [Wallace] by the end of the season!”

Gregory missed a penalty against this Saturday’s opponents Brentford in the

corresponding fixture last season.

Williams will step up if they get another one at Griffin Park, and one more goal would equal his best haul in a season for the club.

“It’s massive,” Williams said. “The fans have been fantastic on the road this year. Everywhere they’ve been they’ve made noise and backed us all the way.

THIS WAS supposed to be the season that Brentford pushed on to challenge for promotion and when they defeated Wigan 2-0 on September 15 they went second after seven games.

They probably didn’t think that in the first week of November that would be their last Championship victory, and if Millwall beat them on Saturday the Bees will be below their London rivals in the table.

It’s an altogether different story for Neil Harris’ side, after three wins in their last four games following a period when it looked like it would be a relegation battle in their second season back in the second tier.

While Millwall were romping to a 30 win over Ipswich on Saturday, Brentford were going down 1-0 to their Tractor Boys’ East Anglian rivals Norwich. It’s now eight games without a win.

Brentford were dealt a blow last month when Aston Villa came in for their boss Dean Smith, and his replacement Thomas Frank has yet to steer his side to victory, three defeats in three games.

Frank arguably wouldn’t have been the choice of the majority of Bees fans. For a club chasing a place in the Premier League, those supporters would have wanted sights set higher for a bigger managerial name.

behind him as a senior manager. He took over at Danish top-tier side Brondby in 2013, before resigning in March 2016 in unusual circumstances, after his chairman, Jan Bech Anderson, had under a pseudonym criticised him in an online fans forum.

You couldn’t imagine anything like

that happening in this era at Millwall.

After such a difficult start, Harris and his players deserve credit for their resilience. And after winning back-toback league games for the first time since April, the challenge now is to get that first win on the road this season.

“We had a tough September,” Harris said. “We’re not the finished article

and we’re not just going to keep getting results because that’s what’s happened in the last three years. You have to work harder and harder at it.

“September, we didn’t get some of the reward we deserved from some half-decent performances. It is important players carry momentum.

Even after Reading when we lost 3-1,

we knew how good we were. We knew how lucky Reading were to get anything out of that game, let alone three points.

“If we keep the home form going, build off what we’re doing at the moment, then it’s a solid base for us.

But then the away from home, with two away games coming up, we have got to improve.”

Harris will have a full squad at Griffin Park if Jed Wallace shakes off a calf strain. Tom Elliott went off against Ipswich but should be available, while the only other real decision to be made is at left-back. It seems likely Harris will continue with Murray Wallace there after he praised the defender for his performances over the last month. That would mean James Meredith having to be satisfied with a place on the bench for just the second time after seeing his 60-game run successively starting in the league broken last weekend.

Boss unhappy after first-half capitulation

KEVIN NUGENT questioned his side’s attitude as they conceded three first-half goals against Colchester United at The Den on Tuesday afternoon to see their eight-game unbeaten run come to an end, writes Conor Martin...

Lions under-23 boss Nugent said it was “probably the worst we’ve played all season” as Louis Dunne, Eoin McKeown and Tarique Hyde gave the visitors a 3-0 lead at the break in their Professional Development League clash.

Nugent had named a strong side, including senior players Jordan Archer, Conor McLaughlin, Byron Webster and Ryan Tunnicliffe, but they were blown away in the opening 45 minutes.

Nugent introduced George Alexander – son of ex-Lion Gary – at half-time, and Rob Harvey's brilliant strike added to by Isaac Olaofe made it 3-2 with eight minutes left.

Harvey fired home from 30 yards to beat Dillon Barnes in the 56th minute, before Olaofe finished from full-back Danny McNamara’s cross.

Millwall went close to getting an equaliser, but Alexander flashed an effort just wide before Mason

Saunders-Henry was off-target in added-time.

“That’s probably the worst we’ve played all season, for whatever reason,” Nugent said. “I’m sure the players didn’t go out there with the mindset of having a poor attitude but it certainly looked like that.

“But it’s a good learning curve for these lads because we had gone eight unbeaten and if you think you can just go out there and do your own thing then football has got a tendency to kick you up the backside, which is exactly what happened in the first half.

“I was pleased with the performance in the second half, and we could have gone on to win it as well. There was nothing tactically changed, all that changed was that we worked harder, pressed the ball quicker, got after it and played with intensity.

“Overall I’m not happy with it, but a bit better in the second half.”

Alexander is still a Millwall under-18 scholar, and Nugent is pleased with his progress.

Nugent said: “He’s a good young player, he’s coming through so he’ll be dipping in and out [of the under-23 side]. He’s still got to learn the trade but he’s doing very well with the youth

SHAUN HUTCHINSON insisted there was “never any panic” this season after Millwall went eight league games without a win – and now wants the side to be more “ruthless” defending their own goal.

Millwall were in the Championship’s relegation zone but have won three of their last four games, though there was an awareness among the squad and Lions fans that performances were not being reflected in results before that.

Hutchinson made his comeback in the starting XI against Ipswich last Saturday after missing nine league games with a knee injury, and he said he was determined to mark it with a first clean sheet for the club in thirteen Championship fixtures.

Hutchinson took back the captain’s armband at The Den, helping his side to a dominant 3-0 win over the Tractor Boys to move up to eighteenth.

It’s been another slow start for the Lions. After the same number of games in the last two seasons they were sixteenth in the Championship and thirteenth in League One. “There was never any panic because even last year when we were down near the bottom we were playing

really good football,” Hutchinson said. “I think the gaffer is probably scratching his head during pre-season wondering why it doesn’t quite fall for us [at the start of seasons]. We tend to have slow starts and it seems to be the same again this year.

“But I think if performances were bad and results were bad it would be worrying. The gaffer stayed calm because the performances were good enough to get wins and there were signs of a decent Millwall team, which is what he looks for.

“It was one of the main things after speaking to the gaffer, and certainly for myself – I really wanted to get that clean sheet. We want to get that mentality back from last year.

“There were times last year when we always felt we were going to get a clean sheet and I think we need to start believing that again as a squad and give everyone the belief that if we do nick a goal we can see the game out.

“The game last weekend was the starting block for that.”

Millwall have one of the best defensive records in the division in the last five games in giving away just nine shots on their goal, yet they have conceded seven times.

Hutchinson continued: “The gaffer mentioned it as well, that maybe we’re not being ruthless enough in our own box, it’s hard to pinpoint it. I remember last year we weren’t conceding many shots yet they were

going in from 40 yards or deflecting in, and suddenly that somehow just changed in January and that’s when we started getting the results.

“Certainly in terms of defence, only having nine shots on goal in five games is a great stat to have, but there was something not quite right because we were conceding. Hopefully we can turn it around and have the belief that we can get the clean sheets.

“I went to the home games and watched the away games on telly when I was injured, so I’ve seen a lot of the football since I’ve been out.

From the Nottingham Forest game and then Villa, it was a bit more like us, more like the Millwall performances that I’m used to. It looks like we are continuing that and we’ve hit a bit of form right now.”

That has come after an unsettling opening month of the season, with the transfer window still open and a number of players such as Jake Cooper and Jed Wallace linked with moves away, before George Saville went to Middlesbrough.

Millwall signed Ryan Leonard to replace him, and he along with one of the other new summer signings, Murray Wallace, has impressed recently.

Leonard’s long throws aimed at Cooper have led to two goals this campaign.

Hutchinson praised the summer recruits, after the uncertainty over

what the squad make-up would be at the end of the transfer window.

“I think it’s more unconsciously it affects the dressing room. We had the Saville thing, the Jed thing, the Cooper thing,” Hutchinson said.

“Personally and selfishly I was hoping they would stay, because of course you would, you want your best players to stay. You’re worried in case they’re going to leave, and maybe there was a little bit of unrest over that, but not intentionally.

“Now the squad is settled and the new boys have come in and done well.

Lenny is starting to kick on, got his first goal and he’ll be a big player for us. Bradders [Tom Bradshaw] and Jiri [Skalak], Murray Wallace as well, they’re starting to see the style of play and fit in, understand the formation more.”

Hutchinson also recently found out how difficult a player Cooper is to mark. The 23-year-old defender has been directly involved in seven league goals this season, with Ipswich the latest club to fail to stop him setting up Lee Gregory’s second from Leonard’s throw last weekend.

“Two seasons go Cardiff had it with big [Sean] Morrison going forward,” Hutchinson recalled. “If it’s going to get you an extra, I don’t know, eight, nine points a season then why not. It’s another weapon that we’ve got. We don’t always need to use it but if it’s going to get us goals then nobody

really cares.

“He is a handful in the box. We did a defensive thing not long ago, because obviously we had conceded quite a lot at set-pieces, and I was picking him up. I’d never realised what it was like to mark him but he’s a bit of an animal in the box. Teams can’t seem to stop him.

“Even if teams want to put four people on him it frees up someone else. It’s good for us and it’s a worry for the opposition.”

Hutchinson has played 72 times for Millwall since his move from Fulham in the summer of 2016, and will pass the 100-game mark this season if he stays injury-free.

“I remember when I first came here it took me a while to get settled in,” he said. “It’s just a completely different club to anything else, the way they play, the way the fans expect of you. Everything about it.

“If it’s a home game and it’s 0-0 and you’re not chasing the ball or getting stuck in the fans will let you know. If you’re not going to give everything you’ve got you won’t get a second chance. They’re on your back, it’s the least they expect from you.

“The gaffer has put a squad together of players like that and he knows what the fans appreciate and like, and that’s the group he’s built.

“It’s a club like no other and once you do get settled it’s a great club to play for.”

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris believes Lee Gregory can keep improving in his 30s – pointing to the example of Brighton’s veteran striker Glenn Murray.

Gregory turned 30 in August and is the Lions’ top scorer this season with seven goals. Murray is joint-third top scorer with Sergio Aguero in the Premier League in 2018-19 and is showing few signs of slowing down after his 35th birthday in September.

The former Halifax striker is out of contract at the end of the season, but Harris wants him to stay at the club and believes he can keep developing his game.

“His form is top class at the moment.

He’s full of energy, of running, of confidence,” Harris said. “Even when you get to 30, even Stevie [Steve Morison] at 35, you can still coach them.

A lot of what we do with the forwards is instinct, how they play. We recruit players for how we want to play, but you can still work with them.

“We work with Lee, Steve and Tom [Elliott] and Bradders [Tom Bradshaw] to try and get the best of them in a Millwall shirt, and I think we’re seeing the rewards now of hard work from the whole team, starting from the last international break and moving through October.

“Lee’s goal-scoring prowess is first class at the minute. His movement is excellent and his anticipation is really good. I think if there was something I could have highlighted about Lee in the last couple of years to improve on it would have been his anticipation in the penalty area. He’s now adding that to his game and it means he’s a top-class striker at this level.

“That’s got to be Lee’s aim, that over the next four or five years he can still keep getting better at this level, but also develop his game so that when his pace diminishes a little bit in years to come he’s bright enough and clever enough with his physique and strength to become a really good link player.

“At the moment he’s showing his ability to link the play but also to run in behind and cause teams problems.”

SHAUN HUTCHINSON believes not having the same kind of expectations as other clubs is a benefit to Millwall as they look to climb the Championship table.

The Lions secured just their fourth league win of the campaign when they defeated Ipswich last weekend.

Aston Villa and Ipswich have already sacked their managers this season, with several others under pressure.

Millwall confounded the odds last season as they just missed out on the play-offs.

Hutchinson said: “We don’t really have expectations like some teams who are constantly checking how far off the play-offs or top two they are, and if they’re not in the top six at Christmas then the manager is under threat.

“Here at Millwall we just take things game by game. Even last year we would just look at who we had next, that’s the best way to be.”

This Saturday, Millwall make the trip to Brentford, who saw their manager Dean Smith move to Villa, Thomas Frank taking over at Griffin Park.

Millwall lost 1-0 to the Bees in last season’s corresponding fixture, and Lions fans have snapped up the full away allocation this weekend.

“Playing there last year was a great occasion and unfortunately we didn’t get the goal for them,” Hutchinson said. “They all want to be there for that first away win of the season. It seems to take a while every year.

“We just need to go into it with the same mindset as we’ve had the last couple of games. If we can start picking points up away from home, and we know how strong we are at home, then you really do shoot up that table.”
