Frontline staff figures are a real worry as Brexit drags on

A

S THE Brexit chaos drags on, and the deadline for reaching an agreement gets ever closer, health officials around the country are getting increasingly nervous about the impact a no deal could have on their staff recruitment - and Southwark is no exception.

Data compiled by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, seen by this paper, lays bare the yawning gap that could be realised in midwife recruitment with Guys’s and St Thomas’ recruiting a massive 18.9 per cent from the EU, King’s 7.2 per cent and Lewisham and Greenwich 10.2.

Across these trusts, more than ten per cent of all doctors, nurses and midwives are EU nationals.

These figures are extremely worrying and as talks over a deal or no deal on Brexit continue, on the ground we need to know frontline staff will remain. Over the past year, the number of midwives arriving from the EU has fallen by a staggering 88 per cent.

To add insult to injury, today we also report on the money that our NHS Trusts make from parking fees. This is a national issue, but when you see that staff themselves are being charged, you wonder how that can help to recruit and retain vital hospital staff.

DONALD TRUMP is coming to London this Halloween – as Trump impersonators have been selected to play the US President for a scare-fest at the London Bridge Experience.

The impersonators’ top Trump tips:

• The main thing is looking like him, said Spencer, meaning a comb-over and tie will be needed • Study him on YouTube, says Spencer, to get all sides of him • James points out he always sounds like he has a cold – so practise your sniffles • He uses an ‘OK’ gesture with his hands while he talks, said James, and uses it to punctuate words • Rehearsal is key, said entertainer Spencer – so try, try and try again to master the Trump impersonation

The spine-tingling Phobophobia event is billed as a Hillibillies Halloween, and sees Trump joined by super-fan Cletus and his family, who have moved to London Bridge to promote Make America Great Again.

The News spoke this week to the event’s Trump impersonators to find out just how you can pass for a president to give everyone the chills during the spooky season.

Spencer K Gibbins, pictured, said: “The main thing is obviously looking like him. For a start as soon as you play him, you have to get into his mind-set.

“You have to get the gestures right, you have got to hear his accent and you’ve got to get as close to his voice as you can.”

The actor bears a remarkable similarity to the politician and said he has been doing the lookalike on-and-off since Mr Trump took office in January last year.

The entertainer, who insisted he was aged 39, recommends watching YouTube for any budding impersonators.

He said: “You have to rehearse and you need to pick up all these nuances. Go to YouTube and see when he’s in a good mood, when he’s in a bad mood – get all those sides of him.”

James Moxson-Browne will be playing the character during a radio broadcast at the event on October 31st, and has been using YouTube videos to practise the former Apprentice tycoon’s distinctive voice.

The theatre-trained actor, who lives in Shepherd’s Bush, said the trick to capturing Trump’s way of speaking is to talk as if you have a cold.

He said: “He always sounds like has a cold – like he’s been up all night.

“He places emphasis on random words as well. It makes it so a lot of what he says doesn’t make sense.”

Trump’s mannerisms are also important, he added.

“Trump always purses his lips, and has a sideways smile when he’s pleased with himself,” said James, who works in the tourism industry and has previously played Dracula.

“And he does an ‘OK’ sign with his hands when he’s speaking which he uses to punctuate words.”

Despite looking like the world’s most divisive statesman, there are some unexpected bonuses for a Trump look-a-like, explained Spencer.

“I’ve been all over the world over the last year-and-a-half and everywhere I got stopped and they all wanted photographs,” he said. “It’s good – it means I get seats in restaurants!”

CALLS HAVE been made for Dame Tessa Jowell to have a permanent memorial in her constituency, following a service remembering her life at Southwark Cathedral last week.

Over a thousand people attended the service on Thursday October 18th to pay tributes to the former Dulwich and West Norwood MP, including previous prime ministers, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and David Cameron.

Dame Tessa’s daughter, Jess Mills, recalled her “endless, heart-bursting, infinite love”, while husband David Mills told those who turned out to pay their respects that her last words had been ‘love forever’.

The ceremony prompted calls for a permanent memorial to the former MP in Southwark, with one resident writing on social media: “Are there any plans for some kind of memorial to Tessa within her own constituency? Would be good to see one.”

Another constituent, Johnathan Potts, agreed, adding: “It would be great, (I’m a

Brixton Soup kitchen and Harvard course but local people want memorial for MP constituent). We’re blessed here with our MPs and so much else.”

At a speech at the ceremony, the Brixton Soup Kitchen - of which Tessa was a patron - announced it will name its back garden after her in recognition of all the work she had done with them.

It later tweeted: “So sad saying our final goodbye to Tessa at her beautiful service at Southwark Cathedral.

“Who else could have got 3 former prime ministers and 2 mayors all expressing love for such an outstanding person! Thanks to the family for letting us speak! We will miss her dearly.”

Mayor Sadiq Khan also announced that a walkway at the Olympic Park would be named in Tessa’s honour, whilst Harvard University, where she taught before falling ill, said it would be naming a lecture course after her.

The Labour stalwart is credited with being the force behind the 2012 Olympics, having urged Tony Blair to back the bid while she was Culture Secretary.

She was also well-known for her work on Sure Start centres, which aim to improve the lives of young children and families particularly from disadvantaged

Dame Jowell passed away in May this year, aged 70, after being diagnosed with brain cancer in May 2017. She used the last months of her life to battle for better cancer care on the NHS, earning a standing ovation in the House of Lords in January with a moving speech about her condition.

She said: “In the end, what gives a life meaning is not only how it is lived, but how it draws to a close. I hope that this debate will give hope to other cancer patients, like me, so that we can live well together with cancer, not just dying of it.

THE TRUE scale of Southwark’s reliance on frontline NHS workers from the EU has been revealed, raising concerns that a no-deal Brexit could deepen the NHS staff crisis and cause delays for patients.

New data obtained by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism from NHS Digital shows that each of Southwark and Lewisham’s NHS Trusts workforces stand to be affected by the UK crashing out of the EU without a deal.

Across NHS England as a whole, around five per cent of the NHS’ workers are from the EU, but this figure become markedly higher in London – and increases when looking specifically at frontline staff – doctors, nurses, and midwives.

Fifteen per cent of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust’s frontline workers are EU nationals, with 12.5 per cent at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, 10.7 per cent at Lewisham and Greenwich Foundation Trust and 7.9 per cent at South London and the Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. At Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, EU nurses are leaving at a higher rate than non-EU nurses.

The extent of the NHS’ reliance on EU workers comes as NHS officials warn recruitment from Europe has ‘plummeted’, according to Danny

Mortimer, chief executive of NHS Employers, who said: “We would have to close capacity because we couldn’t man the beds or run the theatres.

“Costs would go up because we had to rely on agency staff and they are more expensive.”

Uncertainty over EU has exacerbated a staff recruitment crisis across the NHS. There are now 41,000 nursing vacancies across England - a shortage level that the Royal College of Nursing warned last year would make the NHS “unsafe” and annual turnover is more than 15 per cent.

There is also a shortage of doctors, with 11,500 vacancies recorded in the latest figures from NHS Improvement figures, up from 10,800 the year before.

Responding to the Bureau’s findings, a Department for Health spokesperson said the number of EU nationals working in the NHS had increased since the referendum.

The Department of Health spokesperson said the “NHS is preparing for all situations”, but stressed that EU staff in the NHS “will be among the first to be able to secure their settled status”.

A spokesperson for King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said: “In the past year the Trust has actively reduced its vacancy rate, particularly in nursing where King’s has the lowest vacancy rate in London.

“In terms of leaving the European Union (“Brexit”), the Trust is following the guidance issued in August by the Secretary of State for the Department of Health and Social Care.”

One in five midwives at Guys & Tommies are EU workers

GUY’S AND St Thomas’ maternity wards could be severely impacted

by Brexit as nearly one in five of its midwives are EU workers, the News can reveal.

According to NHS Digital Data obtained by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust 18.9 per cent of midwives are EU workers – the third highest percentage of all London’s NHS Trusts.

Officials believe Brexit could create a crisis in London’s maternity wards after falling interest by EU workers – with some hospital trusts, Like University College London, stopping recruitment campaigns on the continent due to lack of interest.

Just 33 midwives arrived from the EU in the last year up to March 2018, an 88 per cent fall from the previous year, according to NHS Digital.

Gill Walton, chief executive of Royal College of Midwives says despite 2000 midwives being trained last year, the overall number of full time midwives increased by just 67 because so many existing midwives left.

She said: “We only seem to add one

midwife for every 30 that we train. This is of deep concern.

“This isn’t because those new midwives don’t get hired – they do – but they only just make up for all the existing midwives who retire or leave for other reasons during the course of the year.

“So, we can barely keep pace as it is. If we lose the 1,700 EEA-trained midwives then this situation will get a whole lot worse.”

Danny Mortimer, chief executive of NHS Employers says EU recruitment has stalled for a number of reasons, including the referendum; the current value of sterling making moving unappealing and new language test brought in by the government since 2016.

“We have absolutely seen applications from within the EU drop. Just plummet.

Graphs show EU nurses arriving up until the referendum and - from that result onwards - within six months, it just drops like a stone,” he said.

“NHS employers haven’t known what to say when going out to recruit as they don’t know the implications in terms of EU staff’s migration status.”

Extra £1.5m this winter for social care

MORE THAN one-and-a-half million in extra funding is being pumped into social care in Southwark to help stop an NHS crisis throughout the winter but politicians have questioned whether it will be enough, writes Katherine Johnston...

Southwark Council will receive £1,570,648 as part of a new £240 million fund announced by the secretary of state for health and social care, Matt Hancock, earlier this month. The funding is aimed at helping to get patients home quicker and free up hospital beds across England. In total, local authorities in London will get more than £37 million.

According to the government, funding could help with home care packages for patients leaving hospital, pay for workers who help patients with everyday tasks and help them regain mobility and confidence, and home adaptions such as shower rails, preventing people from staying in hospital long after their treatment has ended.

Matt Hancock said: “I want to help the NHS through this winter.”

Councillor Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, schools and adult care at Southwark Council, described the new funding as a 'sticking plaster'.

“The council welcomes this funding to support NHS winter pressures, however there is a year round, year on year increase in demand for social care services that this Conservative government has failed to address," she told the News.

"If the government wants to show that they actually care about fixing the problem, they need to get on with publishing the Green Paper that they have been promising since the summer.”

Terminally ill, disabled and house-bound: dad left with no heating and hot water

A TERMINALLY ill father-of-three suffering from motor neurone disease was left without heating and hot water for ten days in his Peckham home.

John Charon, from Staveley Close near Queen’s Road, took to twitter in desperation after the heating and hot water went down at on Monday, October 8, but no one was working on site to fix it.

Mr Charon is a wheelchair user with limited speech due to his illness, a condition which affects the brain and nerves, causing weakness that gets worse over time.

Mr Charon took to Twitter on Friday October 12, on the fifth day of having no heating and hot water, writing: “Terminally ill disabled house-bound man with three young children.

“Five days NO heating and NO hot water. Staveley Close SE15. I need heating / hot water urgently before I get more ill.”

Mr Charon says in the two years he has lived at Stavely Close, the heating has broken down three times in the middle of winter.

It took until October 17 for heating and hot water to be back up and running –

although the hot water went down again briefly the following day.

Mr Charon says that despite the ongoing issue, there were no service updates on the maintenance website, leaving him unsure of what was being done to resolve the issue.

On October 16, he was visited by a housing officer offering temporary accommodation, but he said the home was not properly adapted for his needs, telling them: “I don’t want to go into temporary accommodation, I just want heating and hot water”.

Southwark Council has now apologised for the ‘completely unacceptable’ situation.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing and modernisation, told the News last week: “It is completely unacceptable for these residents to have been without heating water for this long and I apologise for the length of time it has taken to resolve.

“We are carrying out welfare checks on any vulnerable residents, including Mr Charon, to support them while we fix the problem.

“We have had a series of problems with water supply to this estate last week following a major water pipe leak, engineers have been on site again today and we will continue to test the system to make sure it’s working properly.”

Hospital trusts earn over £2M a year in parking charges

HOSPITAL PARKING charges have earned over £2million for NHS trusts serving Southwark in just one year, newly released data reveals.

According to statistics released by NHS Digital, King’s College Foundation Trust took over £1.6 million in gross income from parking charges in the last financial year. The News reported back in 2015 that the Trust had doubled its charges.

The amount – with visitors and patients paying £1,179,283, and over £500,000 coming from staff – includes fines and parking permits from across all of the trust’s sites, including the Princess Royal University hospital and Orpington hospital.

A King’s College Trust spokesperson told the News that the charges were used to cover the costs of “maintaining and servicing the car park, including providing security for patients and staff”, meaning “NHS money intended for patient care is never spent on our car park.”

The trust added that there was no charge for registered disabled drivers and that the trust’s sites including King’s College hospital were well-served by public transport. Patient and visitor parking at King’s College Hospital itself earned the trust nearly £535,000.

Meanwhile another Southwark NHS trust, Guys’ and St Thomas’, took in £852,566 from patients and visitors across its sites with staff forking out an additional £39, 197.

The stats also show that St Thomas’ hospital has the highest average parking charge for hospital patients and visitors in the country – at £3.20 an hour.

However, the trust told the News that although it would prefer not to charge for parking, it had to charge the sum to prevent tourists using the car-park to get into central London.

said: “To ensure our car parking spaces remain available for our patients and are not misused by members of the public visiting central London, the cost of parking at St Thomas' Hospital is in line with local parking facilities.

“All income generated is invested back into the Trust and helps to improve patient care and the hospital environment.

“The Trust has excellent public transport links and encourages patients and visitors to use these whenever possible.”

They added that concessions were on offer, including for long-term visitors, staff working night shifts and free parking for blue badge holders attending appointments.

The South London and Maudsley Trust - which provides specialist mental health services to south London boroughs including Southwark - made £106, 793 from patients parking charges and a further £29, 346 from staff.

A Trust spokesperson confirmed the amount made, but said it was invested into front line services to benefit patients.

The totals cover the parking charges earned from all of the individual sites managed by each NHS trust.

Sarah Carpenter, national officer for health from the union Unite, labelled the amounts taken from staff in parking charges by NHS trusts “a scandal,” adding it would take a big chunk of the current NHS pay package.

The union official said: “This pernicious trend is replicated by financially squeezed trusts across England – our members are being used as an extra income stream for these trusts. We would like a situation where dedicated NHS staff, who don’t earn a fortune, don’t have to pay to park their cars to go to work to look after the sick, the vulnerable and the injured 365 days a year.”

Nationally NHS trusts in England raised £226million from parking for both visitors and staff in 2017/18. However, parking charges have been abolished in Wales and in large parts of Scotland.

A WOMAN was sent a letter demanding payment for a parking charge notice by Southwark Council – despite being dead for almost a year.

Anne Sentkovsky was sent the letter by the council’s parking department informing her that she needed to pay a penalty charge notice which would increase if she did respond within a week.

But the Ledbury Estate resident passed away of Stage 4 lung cancer in November 2017, and her family told the News they informed the Council and Government agencies of her death at the time.

The letter, dated 10th October, states that Ms Sentkovsky’s car was impounded by the council and that it had been informed by the DVLA she was the keeper.

It states: “You are therefore liable for the payment of the penalty charge notice, removal and storage charges.

“In order to secure release of the vehicle you are required to first make payment of all outstanding charges to date.

“Please note that failure to contact us in writing will result in further charges being incurred by you.”

Although no amount was specified, the council’s policy is to charge £200 for removal, storage fees of £40 a day and the fine itself which ranges from £40£130.

Ms Sentkovsky’s son, Asher Baker, said: “She was actually diagnosed on that day [October 10th] last year, which has just made everything worse.

“I just get angry every time now because it reminds me that my mum is no longer with us and you’re still asking for her money.

“The upshot is I’ve now got a letter saying ‘you owe this, you owe that’ – she has been dead for a year.”

Approached by the paper, Southwark Council apologised for the distress caused and said it would immediately cancel all the charges attached to the vehicle.

Mr Baker, a copywriter, said he registered his mother’s death through the Government’s ‘Tell Us Once’ service soon after she passed away.

He added that he had also separately given a copy of her death certificate to

Southwark Council in November.

He said: “When she died I gave one of the six copies of her death certificate to my resident officer from Southwark Council.

“Probably the parking services just aren’t in touch with the rest of Southwark Council.”

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Cabinet Member for environment, transport management and air quality, said: “We are very sorry for the distress caused to the family.

“Unfortunately, Tell Us Once do not instruct the DVLA and this is the organisation that supplies us with addresses attached to impounded vehicles.

“We will of course cancel the three outstanding parking tickets issued to this vehicle and I appeal to the family to get in touch and let us know if they would like to reclaim the car, or would rather we dispose of it for them.”

A DVLA spokesperson told the News the organisation had not received a Tell Us Once notification and would process it as a priority once it had received contact with Ms Sentkovsky’s next-ofkin.

A FATHER appalled at the squalid conditions of his children's temporary accommodation has shared videos of needles, dirty nappies and human excrement littering the Alyesbury Estate's Taplow House.

A public Facebook where he posted videos detailing the nappies, needles, food and human excrement littered across the estate has had nearly one hundred comments and been shared by almost 200 people, many of whom shared their experiences fearing for their own children's safety on the condemned estate.

David Bleach told the News: "My main aim was to give people a voice and to spread awareness of the dangers in that block and surrounding areas.

"There are a lot of young children in that area - so maybe have signs up in the blocks to let them know the dangers of hypodermic needles?"

One poster said: "It’s like some else said it’s the diseases that come off them. What if one of the boys slipped and fell on them?"

Another lady wrote: "I have just two weeks ago been moved from the Ayelsbury Estate, I was in temp accommodation as well.

"I was there two and half years and my block was the same. I had allsorts

imaginable right on my doorstep.

"My kid saw stuff and things, and come across people he would never ever had if I could have helped it.

"It's disgusting what they put our babies and us mothers in.”

Mr Bleach explained he felt sorry for the addicts using the communal areas, but was scared for his kids: "There is always a story behind one’s life that has made them turn down the wrong road.

"They just need help but help is hard to find these days. We want a safe environment for our children to grow up and be happy."

Former residents from the condemned estate shared their own experiences living in the larger blocks.

One ex-residents said: "I remember walking out my lift on the 10th floor on Bradenham with my kids regularly...addicts injecting! Human sh** everywhere...felt like I was living in a trainspotting film!"

The Aylesbury has long-standing problems with heating and hot water, one of the reasons it has been slated for demolition, with residents also saying they have had problems with rats, mice and cockroaches.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Housing Management and Modernisation, said: “I was horrified to see these videos as no resident should have to live with this on their doorstep.

“We immediately sent a team to the

block to clear the debris and we have increased our cleaning patrols following this complaint, with two dedicated cleaners for this block.

“We already clean the block daily and patrol every landing 2-3 times a day.

“In addition to the council’s efforts, with regards to the litter I would ask all residents to treat their communities with respect and keep their spaces clean and tidy.

“In terms of the drug-related activity, this is clearly very concerning, and a complex issue we are trying to deal with, working with colleagues in community safety and the rough sleepers outreach team.

“I’m very sorry for the distress caused and want to reassure residents we are doing all we can to deal with these issues, as every resident deserves to live in a safe and clean area.”

Mr Haines said: “I was a little bit of a sod, and he took me under his wing and the next thing I knew I was in the band.

“The kids had nothing and nowhere to go. But you’d knock on his house at any time and he’d give you a cup of tea and some sandwiches.”

He added: “If it wasn’t for that band I wouldn’t be here today.”

double tragedy – as only five days after ‘Skip’ passed away on October 11th, so did his son Graham.

John’s son and Graham’s brother, Rodney, 57, paid tribute to his father, saying: “He was a great dad.

“He was always there for us, we all loved him.”

Mr Howard also paid tribute to his brother Graham, whom he described as “a care-free spirit who always lived his life to the full even until the very end.”

John and Graham’s funeral will be held on Friday November 2nd at Charing Crematorium, in Ashford, Kent from 2:40pm.

MOVING TRIBUTES have been paid to a “true legend” who turned around the lives of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe children with his drum and trumpet band.

John ‘Skip’ Howard, a former caretaker at the now-demolished St Mary’s school in Rotherhithe, ran the Rotherhithe Drum and Trumpet Corp from the 1970s for over 25 years and is described as being like a dad to the band’s members.

As the News has reported, Burgess Park is facing an escalating rat problem, which has been blamed on visitors leaving food out for birds that attracts vermin.

Footage taken from the park last Friday shows a group of rats by the lakeside, in full view of the public - and they don't seem to be too scared of humans.

Many park-goers are aware of the issue, and some find the situation very distressing.

Local angler, Graham, said: ‘‘This year the park has been absolutely infested, it’s disgusting.

“Health and safety wise it’s a joke, people don’t realise the risks.’’

Park-goer Jane said: ‘’It's gross, I saw them climbing out of the water, they’re everywhere.’’

Exposure to rat urine can lead to Weil’s disease, a debilitating condition that can result in death. At least four people have died in the UK over the past ten years after contracting the disease.

Some anglers have taken to laying their own rat traps to curb the problem, and claim the council is not doing enough to solve it.

The council says it is avoiding poison to protect other wildlife, and insists budget cuts are not responsible for the problem.

Cllr Victoria Mills, Cabinet Member for Finance, Performance and Brexit, said: “We have recently increased the number of checks in this area and are currently working to reduce the spaces in which rats make their homes. ''We try to avoid putting down poison in open areas, like parks and around ponds, because it can be harmful to other innocent species. ''The location of the problem is also a concern, as there is a risk that poison could get into the water and do further damage. ''This is why we are keeping a close eye on the situation and taking preventative measures, by removing the rats’ homes and trying to limit their food sources.”

The council says its pest control budget for the 2018-19 financial year is £1,308,190, an increase of nearly £83,000 from four years ago.

NEW DATA from King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust was received by the News this week, providing more detail on claims its Denmark Hill hospital is in breach of waiting time targets for routine endoscopy appointments, which can detect bowel cancer.

Further information provided on Tuesday shows that 99 per cent of patients waiting for a routine colonoscopy at its Denmark Hill site are seen within six

weeks, and 98 per cent of those in need of an urgent colonoscopy are seen within two weeks – in line within government targets.

Routine referrals are where cancer is not suspected by a GP but could be the cause of any symptoms.

However, the Trust is ranked second worst in London according to NHS figures for August due to delays at its Princess Royal University hospital site, where 323 patients, nearly 44 per cent of those on the list, waited six weeks or more for a colonoscopy.

A spokesperson from King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust attributed the figures to high demand: “As

previously stated, high demand for routine colonoscopies is at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH), and measures are being put in place to reduce waiting times.

“Ninety-five percent of suspected cancer patients requiring a colonoscopy at the PRUH are seen within two weeks, in line with government targets.

“At King’s College Hospital, 99 per cent of patients requiring a routine colonoscopy and 98 per cent of patients requiring an urgent colonoscopy are seen within six weeks and two weeks respectively. This is in line with Government targets.”

Southwark Council sting nets illegal trader in Leicester National Trading Standards called on expertise of ‘one of the UK’s most proactive enforcement authorities’

A LEICESTER-BASED trader has been sentenced after toxic mercury was found in illegal cosmetics sold online, after a Southwark Council and trading standards sting operation.

On Wednesday, October 17, Munir Ahmad, aged 50 (31.12.67), from Leicester's Evington Road, was sentenced at Camberwell Green magistrates' Court for selling dangerous cosmetics.

He appeared in court after a Southwark Council and trading standards sting operation, with two of the products covertly purchased found to contain highly toxic mercury.

National trading standards approached the council as Southwark staff have expertise and resources in this area after a series of raids and successful prosecutions in our borough.

According to the council, Ahmad was caught 'repeatedly' selling dangerous and illegal cosmetics for personal gain.

Although skin lightening is generally associated with women, one of the products was marketed towards men.

The investigators were able to buy 'Arena Gold Fairness Cream for Men' and 'Golden Pearl Beauty Cream' even though eBay had already banned listings for these products.

Ahmad, who traded on eBay as 'Evington2000', was continuing to sell the banned products under a different name.

Covert test purchases showed that Ahmad was selling illegal skin lightening creams in July and December 2017, and again in March 2018.

In June of this year, Southwark and Leicester councils seized more than 1,500 eyeliners, lipsticks and other cosmetics from his premises.

Although he had stopped selling skin lighteners, he was continuing to illegally sell cosmetics imported from Pakistan that did not comply with health and safety regulations in the UK. Toxic metal mercury can accumulate in the body, and damage the kidneys, liver and brain, causing serious and potentially fatal health problems.

Long-term use of products containing mercury can cause skin pigmentation, including grey patches.

Other products listed and sold were known to UK authorities because of their dangerous mercury content.

Ahmad's PayPal records revealed he was taking £1,900 a month between 2016 and January 2018 for illegal cosmetics.

As a result of the investigation, Ahmad was handed a 40-week custodial sentence, suspended for 24 months, and will also have to complete 100 hours unpaid work and pay full costs of £7,185.

Southwark Council has taken action against a number of skin lightening cream traders in south London,

describing itself as 'one of the most proactive enforcement authorities in the UK' when it comes to finding and prosecuting these vendors.

Councillor Victoria Mills, cabinet member for finance, performance and Brexit said: “I am pleased that Mr Ahmad has received this severe sentence for his continuous sale of damaging skin lightening creams and his negligence regarding the health of his customers.

"Our trading standards team actively combat the sale of skin lighteners locally and this has attracted national recognition and the funding to help us take our investigations online.

“Southwark Council won’t hesitate to prosecute any traders who put profit before the safety of their customers.”

This sting was funded by the National Trading Standards. Its chair, Lord Toby Harris, said: “Illegal skin lightening creams can have an extremely damaging effect on people’s health.

"The products Mr Ahmad was selling did not meet UK safety standards and put consumers at risk.

"Many people using the products he sold will have been shocked to find they contained mercury.

“I am pleased that the work of the Southwark Trading Standards project funded by National Trading Standards has helped protect consumers and bring Mr Ahmad to justice.”

CRIMINALS USING stolen dockless bicycles are facing a police crack-down, as officers start working with Ofo to help reduce crime.

Inspector Owen Pyle told the News he is holding the first joint meeting between police and dockless bike company Ofo this week, as the two start working together to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour across the borough.

Although Inspector Pyle says crime is not rising due to dockless bikes and other cycle hire schemes, some crimes are being committed by people riding stolen bikes with their tracking systems damaged.

Around ten stolen Ofo bikes and more than fifteen stolen TfL hire bikes have been cluttering police stations across Southwark, with many more still missing, or turning up in lakes and canals across London.

"We have been retrieving misused bikes and prosecuting people who have damaged and stolen them," Inspector Pyle said.

"We are looking to increase our working relationship with Ofo and other bike operators.

"Tuesday afternoon will be our first meeting focused on preventing crime and anti-social behaviour from happening."

BELOW: As the News reported last month, so-called Ofo bike gangs have been targeting cyclists on the Surrey Canal Path, Burgess Park, and in busy streets around Peckham and East Dulwich.

Burglars made off with kitchen knives, an iPad, tea bags and cash set aside for the staff’s festive do from the Park Hall Road shop. The break-in is believed to have taken place during the night of Saturday, October 14.

Dulwich Bakery’s manager told the News that retailers in the West Dulwich area have been victim to repeated burglary attempts over the years – with the bakery also burgled in March of last year: “It is hard enough operating as a small independent business without having to fork out money for insurance excess and loss of earnings. Had to close Sunday to allow police to take finger prints.

“The emergency glazing companies really do take advantage of this sort of situation by quoting a price to come out and then springing a ‘call out charge’ on you of £180 once they arrive. The cost to board the shop door was £80 plus £180 call out charge.”

Police confirmed Southwark officers are investigating an incident between 3.30pm on Saturday, October 13, and 8:15 am on Sunday, October 14.

So far no arrests have been made and enquiries continue.

A NEW art installation has appeared in Burgess Park, with ten little houses commemorating a wartime tragedy.

Created by artist Sally Hogarth, the houses form the artwork Silent Raid, and were commissioned by Southwark Council and the Friends of Burgess Park group to commemorate those killed by a World War One zeppelin bomb.

The bomb landed on what used to be Calmington Road, and is now Burgess Park, on October 17, 1917.

Ten people were killed, including four members of the same family, and around 24 injured. Much of the street was destroyed.

The houses are at the northern end of the park between Albany Road and the Lake. Some are darker in colour, signifying that they are nearer to where the bomb landed. The varying heights reflect the age and gender of the victims.

Artist Sally researched the tragedy with the help of Friends of Burgess Park and the Southwark library and archive, finding photographs, recordings, and interviews with survivors.

“After spending time in the park itself, I came to appreciate that where the park stands today had once been covered by buildings and houses which were destroyed by war," she said.

"The absence of their existence and public awareness of this in the present day, created a powerful feeling I wanted to convey in the work.”

The artwork was unveiled 101 years to the day the bomb landed, and is part of a series of events to commemorate the centenary of the armistice.

Councillor Rebecca Lury said: “Today we remember the lives, buildings and history of this vibrant, exciting and ever evolving area.

"We take a step closer to understanding the people and the landscape that came before today's Burgess Park, and recognise the terrible impact of the First World War on civilians, here in Southwark.

A Bermondsey bugler wanted!

A BUGLER is being sought to sound out the Last Post at a WW1 Centenary memorial to the fallen soldiers of Bermondsey on Remembrance Sunday.

The ceremony, held every year at Old Jamaica Road’s memorial, pays tribute to the 972 men who were killed from the 22nd Battalion of the London Regiment (Queen’s).

But this year, because of the centenary of the Armistice on November 11th, the organisers do not have anyone to sound out the Last Post – meaning the search is on for a volunteer.

Lt Col Peter Swanson, honorary president of 6th (Bermondsey) Battalion Queen's Royal Regiment Old Comrades Association, said: “Remembrance Sunday this year falls exactly on 11 November and is particularly significant being the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War 1.

“We are particularly keen this year to have Last Post and Reveille played by a bugler or trumpeter during the ceremony but, unfortunately, none is available from military sources because of other ceremonies.”

Mr Swanson urged a volunteer from the public to get in touch who would be able to play the calls at the ceremony.

The short wreath-laying ceremony will be held at 10am on Remembrance Sunday, November 11th, which allows people to attend other remembrance events at 11am.

A LIMITED edition poppy pin has been launched with the Millwall crest ahead of the WW1 centenary commemorations.

The badge, in partnership with the club and the Royal British Legion, is selling for £2.99 on the British Legion’s website.

But keen fans will have to wait awhile,

as current stocks have sold out already.

Pins have been made for 54 clubs for all of the divisions ranging from the Premier League to League Two. All profits from the sale of the badge will go towards the British Legion’s charitable work.

The charity, founded by veterans of the First World War, helps members of the Armed Forces community and is the national custodian of the military

covenant between the nation and our soldiers.

It’s well-known for its annual poppy appeal, which launches on October 25th ahead of the centenary of the Armistice on November 11th.

DULWICH HAMLET will return to its Champion Hill stadium potentially next month - after reaching an agreement with developer Meadow Residential this week.

In a statement sent to the News on Tuesday evening, the club confirmed it will move back to its historic home after an agreement was reached on Monday with the help of MPs Helen Hayes and Harriet Harman after an intervention from sport minister Tracey Crouch.

The club will lease the Greendale astroturf, and have an eighteen-month lease for the Champion Hill site, both of which will include one-year rolling extensions.

It is expected that the ground will need four to six weeks' work to prepare. The date of the first new game played at home will be announced once upcoming fixtures are confirmed.

The triumph comes after eight months of exile and negotiating deadlock since the club was evicted from its ground after 125 years of playing history over alleged debts, and almost stripped of its own name in a trademarking row.

The club, admired for its support of LGBT and humanitarian causes, punched above its weight with the help of a wellorganised grass-roots campaign and support from fans, footballers, local MPs, national politicians who debated its future in parliament.

Just last week, the News reported that Southwark Council had renewed its call on Meadow to break the stalemate by confirming it would take a possible compulsory purchase order off the table to help move things on.

Dulwich Hamlet has now spent eight months away from its Champion Hill ground. In that time, it achieved promotion at the end of last season to the Vanarama National League South while playing at a temporary home at Tooting and Mitcham FC's Imperial Fields.

A joint statement from the club, Southwark Council and Meadow, explained: “DHFC has approached

“DHFC has requested a new lease from the council on the AstroTurf pitch.

“This new lease, to be granted by the Council, would be coterminous with an eighteen month lease, to be granted to DHFC by Meadow, on the Champion Hill site.

“Both leases include a one year rolling extension.

“The new lease of Greendale would allow DHFC to use the AstroTurf pitch for all its sporting requirements including any match day use and such other community and sporting uses as DHFC may undertake from time to time.

“DHFC has agreed to meet the Council’s aspiration for investment into the improved sporting facilities on that site for the benefit of both the club and the wider community.

Meadow has agreed to support the club’s return to Champion Hill on this basis.

In recognition of this, the Council has agreed not to progress activity on a compulsory purchase order in relation to the Champion Hill site for the duration of DHFC’s lease at Champion Hill, so long as it is on fair and reasonable terms, including allowing the club to retain match day income, bar-takings and catering proceeds.”

Club Director Ben Clasper stated: “We’d like to thank Tracey Crouch and our local MPs Helen Hayes and Harriet Harman for facilitating and attending the meeting which led to this positive outcome.”

Cllr Johnson Situ, Southwark’s cabinet member for growth, development and planning, said: “I am pleased we have been able to reach an agreement that will allow DHFC to return to their rightful home at Champion Hill and provide them with some stability, as well as securing much needed investment in local sporting

facilities.

“This has been a difficult decision for the council, balancing multiple interests, however our principal objective has always been to support the club and to ensure its long term future.

“This is hopefully the first step towards that goal.

“The overarching vision for Greendale remains the same, with significant green open space remaining under council control so that we can ensure it meets the needs of the local community.

The difference now is that the astroturf area will be managed by DHFC, who will invest in it to bring it up to a decent standard for use by the community and club alike.”

The fans’ reaction

Dulwich Hamlet FC is coming home, and the rabble are well and truly roused by the news, with more than three thousand fans liking the tweet that broke the news on Tuesday.

Peckham Town FC, aka, The Menace, said: “It’s been lonely without our big sibling and neighbour in town. Can’t wait to have you back!”, while Carshalton Athletic wrote: “Brilliant news #DHFC – hope the move back goes smoothly! #nonleaguefamily’.

Labour and Coop peer Lord Kennedy, a Millwall and Hamlet supporter, described ‘one of our most vocal and tireless supporters’ by the club, described it as ‘wonderful news’.

Sadiq Khan said: “Fantastic news for everyone who has campaigned so hard alongside the club, the fans, Southwark Council and so many other for this superb community club to return home to Champion Hill.”

The club has also announced its official charity partner for this season will be Redthread, a charity that works in A&Es and primary care to support young people affected by violent crime.

Toby Eckersley: ‘A quintessential gentleman and a scholar’ A PUBLIC memorial was held on Monday for Toby Eckersley, the housing-rights champion and former Dulwich Village ward councillor who died while standing for election in May’s local elections.

Mr Eckersley sadly passed away at 76 years of age while standing as a candidate for London Bridge and West Bermondsey in May. A minute’s silence was observed at the count in his memory.

The public memorial service was held at Southwark Cathedral on Monday from 3pm, with friends, family and colleagues turning out to say their goodbyes, including the many people across the borough whom Mr Eckersley helped in his 37 years as a Conservative councillor.

The Walworth Society, of which Cllr Eckersley was an active member, said: “Very moving memorial service at Southwark Cathedral today for former Southwark Cllr and long-standing Walworth resident Toby Eckersley who died earlier this year.

“Fond and heartfelt tributes from his family and the numerous groups of people in Southwark whose lives he so enriched.”

Conservative politician Ian Twinn, shared on Twitter: “And so a final farewell to Toby Eckersley at Southwark Cathedral.

“He was simply, or actually not so simply, a hero. Councillor, flying the Conservatives flag, sometimes alone, helping those who had no one else.

Eckersley became known in recent years as a firm advocate on the rights of the Aylesbury Estate leaseholders, whose battle with Southwark Council went to two public inquires and resulted in the council changing its policy on estate regenerations in March of this year.

Beverley Robinson, a leaseholder whose case was taken up by Ecklersley, said his work was invaluable in this landmark and authoritative case. She gave a moving tribute at the service on behalf of the Aylesbury Leaseholder Action Group, describing him as ‘a perfect, quintessential gentleman and a scholar’.

She told of how his own passionate fight to save his home from demolition in the 1970s helped him take up her – and ten other leaseholders cases with the same rigour and determination, humorously noting: “Toby was a very educated individual.

“I called him on many occasions and said, ‘Toby what are you doing?’

“Very politely he would respond: ‘working for you Beverley, reading through the mountain of documents.’”

Touchingly, she said: “He was my teacher, my motivator, advisor a researcher, a campaigner, a community leader, a politician and a brother, uncle, cousin and godfather and most of all he was a true friend to all”.

To try to overcome these barriers, Southwark Council has teamed up with the College of Contemporary Health to create an online learning programme, Southwark Healthy Weight Training.

Anyone who works with children, young people and families and clinical staff like GPs, nurses and health

visitors are encouraged to sign up.

Southwark councillor Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety and public health, said: "It is vital that those on the frontline of healthcare are equipped to talk about weight management in the right way.

"This training is central to giving clinicians the tools they need to discuss how weight management can improve, and in some cases, prolong their patients’ lives."

The online training is free and earns between two and five CPD credits.

A NEW film featuring young people treated at the Maudsley for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is designed to raise awareness for the 'debilitating and paralysing' condition and encourage sufferers to seek help.

OCD is not me, made by the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust in partnership with OCD Action, follows four young people and their families both the lowest point of their treatment, and the path to recovery.

The film was inspired by David Goldstone's daughter, Sophie, who was treated at the Madusley's Michael Rutter Centre, with David raising funds for the project by running the London Marathon.

“We hope the film will help children with OCD and provide reassurance about the treatment that they will be receiving and will feature some interviews with other children who have been through the programme," he said.

“When my daughter was extremely unwell I felt a hopelessness that I had never experienced.

"I found the OCD Action Helpline online and called. They gave me hope, reassurance and guidance.

“Following a referral and assessment my daughter had to wait a few months to start treatment at Maudsley Hospital.

"During this time things were tough and even basic activities were very difficult never mind going to a strange hospital.

"Had we seen a film like this then it would have made our journey easier.”

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder affects around one to two per cent of the population.

People with the condition experience intensively negative, repetitive and intrusive thoughts - causing high levels of anxiety. They feel compelled to engage in repetitive and distressing behaviours.

What is OCD?

PEOPLE WITH obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) experience unpleasant and intrusive thoughts, images, doubts or urges (called obsessions) and repetitive behaviours (called compulsions).

Compulsions are usually carried out as a way of reducing the distress caused by obsessions. OCD takes many different forms and causes distress and interference to daily functioning.

Dr Zoe Kindynis, Clinical Psychologist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, explained: “OCD is a very distressing and debilitating condition.

"However, it is also found to be treatable, with good recovery rates following cognitive behavioural therapy with exposure and response prevention.

"Therefore, we hope that this video raises awareness of OCD as a condition, encourages sufferers to seek professional support, and provides hope for recovery.”

Sadly, many sufferers only get treatment years after their first symptoms appear.

A spokesperson for OCD Action said: “There is a shocking statistic that the average delay between onset of symptoms of OCD and people getting treatment is twelve years; this needs to change.

"People are often ashamed to talk about their OCD for fear of being judged or misunderstood, but we are confident that this film can shine a light on what OCD is, and inspire young people to speak out and get the support and treatment they deserve.”

Cancer sufferer is fundraising to launch album on his battle, with backing from McFly star ROTHERHITHE

A FUNDRAISING campaign has been launched for a Rotherhithe man to write and produce an album marking his journey with cancer.

David Knight, 32, had his first brush with cancer when he had a huge seizure at his boyfriend’s house in 2015 and was diagnosed with grade 2 Oligodendroglioma, a type of brain tumour.

Sadly, despite doctors removing 90% of the tumour – which the musician has named Terrence - David discovered the cancer had returned two years later and now wants to write an album about his journey.

The campaign has even been backed by McFly star Danny Jones, who called David the “the loveliest and most upbeat and positive person.”

David said: “I kept bashing up my face - chipping teeth, fracturing my eye socket, having stitches in my nose, cuts all over my head and face and biting through my tongue.

“I had no idea why it was happening but I had my suspicions. As it turns out, it was Terrence coming back for round 2!”

David has undertaken a course of radiotherapy followed by chemo – and uses the days where has enough energy to write his album.

He said: “I write music for me. I love music. But this time I wanted to create an album that had meaning for as many people as possible, whether they have cancer or not it affects everyone.

“My ultimate goal is to help people, give them something to listen to while they're sitting through chemotherapy, or after a diagnosis.

“I want everyone to interpret the songs in whatever way they want and maybe make them feel better.

“Laughter is important, so the album has some really light-hearted songs, but it is also a way of releasing the anger and upset that a cancer diagnosis can cause.

The money from the crowd raising drive will go towards the recording studio, the mixing and mastering as well as publicity.

The musician said he hopes the music would raise awareness, saying that being given a cancer diagnosis was like “being hit around the head with a sledgehammer.”

He added that anything donated above his target amount of £8,000 will be donated toward two charities, Braintrust and Shine Cancer Support.

The songs will be available on i-Tunes and Spotify once made.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has slammed TfL’s proposal to cut central London bus services – including the RV1 entirely – saying it would hit the disabled and vulnerable the most.

TfL published a review of central London bus routes last month, and have suggested changing the 45, 48, 53, 171, 172 and 388 buses, as well as scrapping the RV1.

Southwark Council argued that the data used by the agency to support removing the RV1 was invalid and flawed, as an analysis of passenger numbers was conducted while the route was on a diversion.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Cabinet Member for environment, transport management and air quality, said: “TfL’s cuts mean that many people in the south of London will be booted off their regular bus services at Elephant and Castle and Waterloo, as opposed to completing their journey into central London.

“People with disabilities and parents and carers with prams and pushchairs will be the worst hit, especially in the case of passengers of the RV1 route, which is the only service to cater for people with mobility concerns and is at risk of being cancelled all together.”

Mr Livingstone appealed to TfL to reverse its proposal, saying it needed to “start putting south London’s most vulnerable people first.”

However, TfL said that the RV1 was one of London’s most under-utilised services and had experienced declining passenger numbers since 2009.

“Fewer people are using the route RV1 than ever before, with 64 per cent fewer journeys being made due to a gradual decline since 2009.

“The enhanced 343 service, which would run at a higher frequency and higher capacity, would also add more useful links across Tower Bridge to Aldgate.”

Asked by the News about the effect of the loss of the RV1 on passengers with disabilities, a TfL spokesperson said that all buses had step-free access, and that disabled passengers had priority over other users on all buses.

The council has also raised concerns over the effects of air pollution from the proposed scrapping of the RV1, as the service is Southwark’s only emissionsfree bus route.

The Southwark Liberal Democrats have also criticised TfL’s proposal, setting up a petition to protest the move.

Victor Chamberlain, ward councillor for Borough and Bankside, said: “The Mayor of London made much of him being the son of a bus driver, yet here we see cuts to a much-loved bus service that services a rapidly growing part of inner London and is used by residents, workers and tourists alike.

“Liberal Democrats believe the RV1 needs to be saved, not scrapped.”

But TfL said it was “only right that we reassess the network after the significant changes in both London’s infrastructure and how Londoners choose to travel.”

The full proposal on the RV1 and other Southwark services affected are listed on the TfL website.Consultations into the proposed changes end on Friday November 9th.

Good news they’re coming home

ULWICH HAMLET Football Club has a special place in the hearts of thousands of residents across the borough and the news earlier this year that the club had to move from its long standing home on Champion Hill was a devastating blow to all of us.

Dulwich Hamlet is the very definition of a successful local football club. Rooted in our local communities, it is a great local team with a strong commitment to developing and nurturing the talent of our local young people. The club and the supporters have helped raise funds for refugees, our local foodbank and other charitable causes and were one of the first to back the Football Association’s anti-homophobia campaign. Dulwich Hamlet matches are a great, family day out!

Scientists have said we may have already passed the emergency tipping point. It is now not enough to stop all fossil-fuel emissions. To get back to a safe level of carbon, we need to also remove billions of tons of carbon in the air from the oil, gas & coal we burnt in the last 100 years.

I thought it would be useful to let people in Southwark know how much carbon roughly each of us emits, from different aspects of our lives. This will enable us to take the most effective steps to cut our own emissions (see table opposite).

I raised the club’s plight in Parliament back in March where there was strong support from MPs. The strength of feeling from fans has also been truly amazing, with hundreds gathering on Goose Green on a freezing cold Saturday to march to Champion Hill in support of the club.

The issues to be resolved were

If we don’t, we are helping condemn our kids to a life filled with more droughts, wildfires, floods, famines and as the UN Gen Sec has warned, literally human extinction. But if we and the rest of humanity do the above, we may have happier, healthier lives and Southwark might not end up under rising seas.

There remain many challenges to secure a sustainable future for the club, but this is much more achievable from a base back at Champion Hill, so for now I will be raising a glass to the good news and thanking everyone who has worked so hard over the last month to move things forward.

A return to The Trench AS WE near a landmark 100 years since the end of World War I we can expect to see more coverage of the Great War in our theatres and on our screens. So with the coming weeks’ events of remembrance ahead of us Les Enfants Terrible are re-staging their 2012 show The Trench for a run at the Southwark Playhouse, writes Chris Peacock...

The show tells the story of a miner, Bert, who had been unsuccessful in signing up for the war on health grounds but finally gets to the front line to help dig tunnels under no man’s land to undermine the enemies’ trenches and plant bombs.

The story is told as an epic poem accompanied by a live score composed by Alexander Wolfe. The set is active and well handled by the cast who also help create a rich soundscape whilst taking on the roles of narrators and puppeteers for the ‘visions’ that Bert has on his journey.

Bert, played by writer and codirector Oliver Lansley, is the focus throughout, as the other characters become props for telling his story.

The puppetry and musical scoring act as rather distancing dramatic devices and you fail to reach an emotional connection to the protagonist. Considering it is based

on a true story in the harrowing theatre of war, I was expecting to feel a greater emotional connection.

The show, in its 65 minute running time, fails to address the gravitas of its subject matter.

Britton’s Stewart, who brought some ironic humour to the play - though I guess it was initially not meant when written; and Tracy-Ann Oberman as Helen Kroger.

During the most tedious speeches my mind drifted to the set that included a Magic Robot game, and a black car that served no real purpose at all, other than to show off a vintage car sourced for no real purpose at all.

On the upside Pack of Lies is ideally timed to soak up the fallout from recent new Cold War events, Plus all involved do what they are directed to do.

Points of interest are that Finty Williams is reprising her mother Judy Dench’s role as Barbara Jackson, for which she won the Olivier; and that Tracy-Ann Oberman killed Dirty Den. Other than that Pack of Lies is a presentation on how miserable middle-class life can be in the suburbs.

The Jacksons are working at happy family in their humdrum existence.

Barbara spends the day plumping cushions to get her home ‘on its best behaviour’, prepping for Bob’s return from work, and worrying about the only blot on their landscape - a daughter who rides on a local boy’s motorbike. The Krogers are Canadian neighbours who seem to be enjoying life much more and their visits are the only excitement in the Jackson household - In reality, I reckon, and in this production. That is until Scotland Yard ask if they can use their home to observe the Krogers!

This collaboration with the authorities completely throws out the Jacksons’ suburban routine, and detrimentally affects Barbara who has to keep up a pretence with her friends while knowing they are being watched from her home. She still, however, has the

It is a real slow burn production and at times comes across as a spoof of the 1950s’ ‘red under the bed’ mentality.

And is it any wonder with lines like ‘The KGB don’t use violence overseas’ eliciting sniggers from an audience struggling not to cry out Panto style: ‘What about Salisbury?’

Each boring aspect of the Jacksons’ mundane life is spelled out, from what the daughter has in her bedroom to how the wife transfers milk into a jug for tea because ‘bottles on the table are so common’. Poison me now, please.

Running for your health IT FELT like verbal volleyball played out in David Hare’s “I’m Not Running”; necessary perhaps to shine a light on the murky, political world, writes Carolyn Hart-Taylor...

Clarity is rare in Westminster, even to questions such as, “Will you be running?”

Garbled responses leave the enquirer to concede, throw in the towel and skulk off stage. A nod, maybe, to the exasperation felt when politicians continuously evade questions But for Dr Pauline Gibson, played by Siân Brooke, growing up in chaos, provides her with the armour needed when she joins the Labour party. Taking an ‘issue’ - the closing down of Corby hospital - Pauline battles away like a modern day Braveheart, protecting the health service against savage cuts.

Pauline’s Achilles Heel, however, is her passion, plus being female too, so is an unlikely candidate for Westminster. As we are reminded: “Labour never put a woman in charge - it’s never the right person or time".

Important as these issues are, if you feel stuck in the mire of bureaucratic processes this play may feel too close to the bone for entertainment. If wanting insight into why community resources rapidly disappear

while politicians thrive, you may find answers, but not straight ones.

Jack Gould, played by Alex Hassell, changes from a scruffy, beer swilling, likeable man of conscience to slick political ‘yes man’, though funnier the more politically desperate and hypocritical he becomes. The minimalistic set being functional and colourless, clashes perfectly with Pauline's emotionally charged requests to be taken seriously. Brooke did a good job keeping up the momentum throughout this lengthy production, but with the modern world being punctuated with interruptions, it felt laboured.

Not for the politically fainthearted, and lacking light and shade, you may wander off course, lulled by Jack’s white leather sofas that nicely draw us to how uninspiring politics can be. That said, we need plays like ‘I’m Not Running’ to remind us of what really matters.

An escape from reality and life’s onslaught this play is not; arduous and thought-provoking it is.

YOU NEED big bowls when you go to Big Bowls because you end up with a big bowl of takeaway when you leave, writes Michael Holland...

I was born and bred in SE16, so I love it when a new restaurant opens Downtown. I love to see the area evolving and staying alive with small, independent businesses popping up in these troubled days, when even the big department stores we grew up with are falling by the wayside. Big Bowls is one of the independent traders that are leading the way now and keeping Rotherhithe alive. San the Man did five years serving street food in Canada Water to earn his spurs, and all what he learnt out there on the street he has brought into this new venture.

And San isn’t stuck in any traditional, restrictive culinary rut, but sells what the customers want. So that means you can have a sirloin steak cooked the

British way but with Japanese noodles, or you could go for Vietnamese pho with Chinese style pork, because in Big Bowls they do not stand on ceremony and that is why it was bursting at its Asian-Rotherhithe fusion seams on the Friday me and Kay were there.

We liked Big Bowls as soon as we walked in. There was a nice feel about it, and as the night went on that feeling got better and better. It’s a family run place. Tick. The decor looks good in there with a mix between minimal and arty. Tick. He sounds like me when he talks. Tick. Tick, Tick. We gelled. We talked pork, we talked steak, we talked noodle, we talked where can I get some booze because it’s a BYO, and San directed me to the convenience store conveniently next door.

And so, with a bottle of red for me and a cola for Kay we awaited the arrival of our orders while discussing demented relatives and Big Brother.

First up was Pork Dumplings. Very nice, with different hot or mild dips, but there were five dumplings! Not a good number for sharing, but we worked it out amicably. There was only gonna be one winner…

So, round two, still smarting from my pork dumpling defeat in the previous round I went for the Prawn in Ramen Noodle Soup, ‘with extra chilli, Mr San,’ I emphasised. Kay ordered

Bermondsey’s Bede turns 80

Residents raised £400 to buy former bakery and Bede House was created

THE BEDE House organisation which has been working in and for the Bermondsey community and beyond for just about all of our lives reaches the grand age of 80, and to commemorate this auspicious occasion they are having an exhibition of photographs – Bede House @ 80 – that portrays the journey from when their HQ in Southwark Park Road was a baker’s to the present day, writes Michael Holland...

Local residents raised £400 to buy the former bakery at 351 Southwark Park Road to create a base where volunteers (often from privileged backgrounds, and motivated by Christian values) could live and work with neighbours, young and old.

It was named “Bede House” after the Venerable Bede, a monk who, whilst living all his life in a Saxon monastery in Jarrow, became the leading scholar of his age. Like Rotherhithe, Jarrow was an important international sea port, and the whole world had come to Bede’s door.

During the Second World War, Bede House was one of the few places that had a telephone. It became an important communications and relief centre and Boy Scout messengers used it as a base. After the War, Bede House was active as the neighbourhood rebuilt itself after the bombing, and adjusted to the closure of

the docks. Many distinguished people were involved in Bede’s youth clubs, and social support for the unemployed, the elderly and those who were isolated.

Richard Carr-Gomm, founder of the Abbeyfield Society, and local MP Bob Mellish were regular visitors, and the annual Bede carnivals regularly attracted celebrity guests.

Bede’s clubs began in Clare College’s railway arch, before moving to Lady Gomm House and then, in 1970, to the Bede Centre on the Abbeyfield Estate.

In this way, new opportunities are created for those who have fewest. Today these values are expressed in Bede’s programmes for adults who have a learning disability, visits to elderly

1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that on 25 October 2018 it has made the above orders under the powers of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

The effect of the orders are to formalise changes to the highway which have been put in place, during and since the construction period, to accommodate the new layout around the ‘One Blackfriars’ development, in RENNIE STREET:- (a) on both sides, (i) to convert all existing single yellow lines to double yellow line 'at any time' waiting restrictions; and (ii) by omission, revert the part of highway that lies at the south of the southern kerb-line of Stamford Street, to an unnamed private road; (b) on the west side, south of its junction with Upper Ground: (i) to introduce an ‘at any time’ taxi stopping and waiting area (12 meters in length) in which taxis only are permitted to stop without restriction; (ii) to relocate an existing car club parking place (6 meters in length); and (iii) to reduce in length an existing permit-holder’s only parking bay (to 6 metres in length and within CPZ ‘C1’) and to relocate southward another existing permit-holder’s only parking bay (6 metres in length) to accommodate the new taxi stopping area and relocated car club bay mentioned above; and (c) to relocate an existing loading bay of which vehicles may load or unload at any time for up to 1 hour, with no return within 2 hours (18 meters in length and previously on the west side) to the east side, north of its junction with Stamford Street.

Fisher concerns ‘met with silence’ EXCLUSIVE

FLOODLIGHT BULBS that haven’t been replaced are putting Fisher games at risk of being called off – which could result in fines, the club has said.

There are currently seven bulbs out of sixteen at St Paul’s out of commission, and efforts by the club to elicit a response from Millwall Community Trust, who manage the ground, have so far failed, it is claimed.

SCEFL clubs could be liable for fines of up to £1,000 if they don’t fulfil scheduled fixtures.

In addition to those worries, Fisher boss Dean Harrison recently revealed to the News that his squad is limited to just one training session per week, down from two per week last season when they achieved promotion from the First Division to the Premier Division.

Fisher pay MCT £90 per hour for use of the facility. They train for two hours, from 8pm to 10pm, when the lights are abruptly switched off. Fisher have also contacted MCT over the fee, to see if there is a way to reduce it, but say they haven’t received a response.

Outside of the ground, Fisher has said local residents complained about the noise from the public-address system.

The club has since not made announcements or played music on match-days.

TED CHEESEMAN expects to add Asinia Byfield to his undefeated 14-0 record – before then setting his sights on Liverpool’s Anthony Fowler.

Bermondsey’s ‘Big Cheese’ fights Reading’s Byfield (15-1) for the vacant British super-welterweight title at the Copper Box Arena in Hackney Wick on Saturday night.

Cheeseman, 23, is confident he can dispatch ‘The Ghost’ before a showdown with Fowler.

Remarkably, despite all of those concerns, Fisher, operating with a budget of £300 a week, one of the lowest in the league, are currently second in the Premier Division table, the ninth tier of English football.

Harrison has been working with the majority of last season’s squad.

“We were training twice a week last season which was coming to about fifteen grand,” Harrison said. “We’ve had to cut that down because the club doesn’t have the money. We’re now training once a week to cut costs and

we have to pay five grand a year to play games here, in a ground, really, that was built for us.

“Last year we relied a lot on our fitness, which we used to do on a Tuesday, and our shape work on a Thursday. Now we’ve just got the Thursday to fit everything in. It’s been a bit more difficult than last year.

“There’s only so much you can do, we know that, it’s semi-pro football so if they want to go out and have a booze you can’t stop them. But obviously if they want to be the best they can be

then they need to look after themselves outside of football, and we always ask them to do that. But there’s only so much you can enforce that.

“We’re just enjoying it, we’re happy where we are at the minute and we’ll see where we go. We’re enjoying the journey.”

The News contacted MCT for a comment on the issues Fisher raised, but has not received a response.

Meanwhile, Fisher travel to Cray Valley this Saturday as they aim to maintain their excellent league form.

“Hopefully we can get the fight sorted quickly, as it's one I want and think I can win, but I'm not going to wait around forever if negotiations prove difficult.

“I want to push on to European and world level, but it would be good to beat him before I do that.”

BERMONDSEY BOXER Chris Kongo made a knockout visit to the Wickers Charity in Hackney Wick recently – telling a group of students that his passion for the sport kept him out of trouble and on the straight and narrow.

Kongo, 25, who has won his ten professional fights, said instead of hanging around parks and street corners with nothing to do, boxing gave him a purpose to succeed.

He was invited by Bobby Kasanga, Wickers programme of works manager and founder of the Hackney Wick FC, and he gave an inspirational talk to a group of 10-18-year-olds at the Wickers Charity hub at St Maryof-Eton.

"I went to visit the Wickers Hub because I wanted to give motivation to the kids,” Kongo said.

“I wanted to show them there is a better life out there for them and that they can channel their anger through boxing instead of being held up in the streets.

“I don't know what would have happened to me if I hadn't found boxing. I've been into it since I was eight years old and I've never looked back."

Last Dance for the Menace

TWO RED cards and a disappointing first-half performance put paid to Peckham Town’s chances of progressing in the Kent Shield, as the Menace crashed out at the second-round stage last weekend.

Cuxton 1991 raced into a 3-0 lead in the first half through Craig Harvey, Dan Hanshaw and Kyle Eastwood, making it an uphill battle for Peckham, literally with the game being played on a sloped pitch.

Peckham rallied in the closing stages of the first half and were rewarded with a goal, Kevin Dance finishing off a set-piece move that had come straight from the training pitch.

Town started the second half brightly, but any chance of a comeback was dashed when they were reduced to ten men in the 55th minute and Cuxton scored the resulting spot-kick.

Ten minutes from time, Town’s goal scorer was pulled back as he was breaking through on goal and then had his legs taken from underneath him. However, the referee thought there was a stamp in the resulting tangle of legs, and Dance was harshly given his marching orders.

Alan Jacobs, Peckham Town’s manager, wanted to focus on their next league fixture. “We didn’t stick to the plans out there. I want to wish Cuxton 91 all the best, and we look forward to getting back to our bread and butter, which is our league challenge.”

The Menace are at home to Otford United on Saturday, October 27 with a 2.45pm kick-off, as they seek to continue their strong league form.

Duke double sees Rye go third

PECKHAM RYE were back on home soil last weekend as they came from behind to beat fifthplace Orpington.

The Rye, who were without key man Danny Warne, fell behind when a long clearance looped over goalkeeper Mick Holman into the net.

But Peckham soon found their rhythm with Craig Parsons and Neil Williams linking well, and they were level when Danny Gibson’s pinpoint free-kick landed on the head of Duke Binitie who applied the finish.

The hosts then took the lead when a scuffed attempt from Binitie landed in the path of Williams who finished from just inside the box for his first goal for the club.

Peckham were now well on top and Parsons’ clever pass slipped in Binitie to slot home and give his side a two-goal lead at the break.

That’s the way it stayed until the full-time whistle, as Peckham climbed to third in the Woolwich & Eltham Sunday Football Alliance table.

SHANE FERGUSON has admitted that this year he has experienced some of the “hardest times” since he joined the club.

Ferguson, 27, started his first league game in eight months against Nottingham Forest this month. The Northern Ireland international was involved in just three league games, all as a substitute, between the end of January and the end of last season, leading to speculation during the summer that he was available for transfer.

Ferguson revealed that Millwall would not have stood in his way had he decided to move on, though he admitted it would have been a difficult decision to make had another club made a serious offer.

The former Birmingham and Glasgow Rangers player has featured 135 times for the Lions since his move from Newcastle in August 2015.

Ferguson wants to make sure he doesn’t find himself out of the reckoning again this season.

“It was really difficult. It was one of the hardest times since I’ve been at Millwall,” Ferguson told the News this week. “You want to go out and play on a Saturday, but if the team’s doing well you’ve got to stick with it and keep training hard. You have to wait for your opportunity.

“The staff here have been great with me.

I always try to train well. I’m not one to go and bang on the door to the manager’s office and make a fuss. I keep my head down and work hard. The manager always says that whenever the opportunity does come you’ve got to try and take it.

“It was tough, but for yourself you can’t let your standards slip in training. If you do get the chance but haven’t been working hard in training, then you’re not going to be mentally right or fit enough to take it. It’s crucial to keep your fitness up and take the chance.

“When I got my opportunity I wanted to work as hard as possible for the team. I know what it’s like to not be in the squad, and I’m trying to make sure that doesn’t happen again.

“If something had come up in the summer that I did fancy I was told that I could pursue it. It would have been a tough decision to make. At that time I didn’t really want to leave Millwall yet. I wanted to have one more chance. I’m playing in the Championship as well, I may not have got that chance again.

“I wanted to give it another try during pre-season and then see how the start of the season went. The manager, and

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris has admitted he doesn’t watch top-tier under-23 football – because he finds it boring.

Harris was turned off watching Category One sides as he believes it is not as physical as it should be and there is too much uniformity in teams’ styles of play.

There is some debate over the merits of under-23 football, with Manchester United academy boss, Nicky Butt, saying: “If you are not around the first team at 20 or 21 you're not going to be, it's a fact.”

Under-23 teams – effectively what the old reserve sides were – are often made up of some senior players returning from injury or out of the first-team picture, or players stepping up from the under-18 side.

Millwall’s Professional Development side, under Kevin Nugent, extended their unbeaten run to eight games after a 2-2 draw at QPR last Monday, after a Mason Saunders-Henry double.

Harris is a fan of Category Two football as he feels it has more of the characteristics of the senior game.

Saunders-Henry is one of a clutch of promising players under the age of 20 who there are high hopes for can make the breakthrough. Harris was at The Den the previous week to see the likes of defender Danny McNamara and Isaac Olaofe put in impressive performances in a 2-0 win over Watford.

Whatever about the nature of the debate, the aim for all clubs is the same, to develop a pathway for players to the first team. This season, Millwall have taken the decision to lower the average age of their under-23 side, and also loan out players such as Ben Thompson, Fred Onyedinma and Tom King who are still eligible for that group but their development would not be aided by playing at the level. Brentford switched to a B team, focusing on developing players released from Premier League and overseas academies, and have been successful in funnelling a number of players through to their first team.

Harris believes there is no easy answer to how to develop players from the under-18s through to the

“There are pros and cons,” Harris said of the under-23 set-up in the country. “The FA and the Football League and the governing bodies are trying everything that they can to find a way to bridge the gap between under18s football and first-team

football.

“People do it in all different ways.

“What I do know is that the gap between League Two and League One gets bigger, the gap between League One and the Championship gets bigger and the Championship to the Premier League gets bigger.

“I’m a believer in young players going

“I did some running before years ago on the treadmill but nothing like what I’ve set out to achieve,” Dave explained to the News. “It started slowly: 5K was an absolute struggle for the first couple of weeks and then came my first 10K at the end of May in central London. I did it in over an hour.

“I got interested in a company called RunThrough who host 10K events in parks around London. It was during this time I signed up to do the Brighton Marathon just in case I didn’t get a London Marathon (2019) place.

“Shortly afterwards while scrolling through Facebook I saw an advertisement for the New York Marathon. I’ve always

wanted to go there and what better way than to run there as well as raise money for charity.

“I felt at that point that I hadn’t really done anything in life to be truly proud of, apart from losing six stone in the second half of 2010.”

Dave’s best time for half the distance – 13.1 miles – is two hours, seven minutes, 32 seconds.

He continued: “My training has consisted of two official half-marathons, several official 10K runs and a ten-mile run. Apart from that I’ve been strengthening my core in the gym and doing a lot of high-intensity interval training on the treadmill. I’m days away from my final long run before New York and I’m hoping to complete 20 miles if my

out on loan and playing men’s football. I don’t watch Category One under-23s football anymore because I find it boring.

I don’t see tackles, I don’t see challenges, I don’t see set-pieces, don’t see the goalkeeper kicking the ball. Yes football has moved on and there’s a lot more interceptions in the game, but when you play first-team level, the Championship is the most competitive league I’ve seen in a long time in terms of challenges and pace and energy, and the size of players.

I don’t see that in Category One football.

“In Category Two it’s more competitive. But it’s so far away from men’s football, how do you get that?

We’ve been sending out players, like Harry Donovan to Dagenham & Redbridge, and trying to compete at that level is difficult.

“The gap now between men’s senior football and 23s is vaster than it’s been at any time since 23s football came in x amount of years ago.”

From Havet to Harlem: Lions fan staying the course

A MILLWALL fan has ditched his kebab habit – to run the New York City Marathon and raise money for a cancer charity.

Dave Elson, 25, from Bermondsey, used to enjoy chomping down on his favourite food at Havet, the same Bromley restaurant frequented by Millwall’s ‘Thursday Club’, the group of players led by skipper Steve Morison who reward themselves with dinner after a hard week’s training.

Dave is aiming to continue on the health charge – a few lip-ups supporting his favourite football team aside – and raise over £4,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. He chose the charity after seeing family members of friends affected by cancer.

“I already have my schedule planned for 2019 and I’m looking at knocking booze fully on the head until after the London Marathon (next April) which I’ll be running for Tusk (an African conservation organisation). I’ve just entered the ballot for Berlin, and hope to do Chicago and New York again as well.”

Attacking hub and, last Saturday, a man-of-the-match performer after being moved further forward to inspire a 1-0 win over Joey Barton’s Fleetwood.

It’s not really how you’d picture Ben Thompson, is it? The player who made his name at Millwall as a defensive midfielder, crashing into tackles and giving everything for the club he grew up supporting and loves. Occasionally scampering forward into attacking areas like a terrier chasing a ball in the park.

Thompson moved to Portsmouth from Millwall in the summer and was man of the match on his debut against Oxford United, and an immediate hit with Pompey fans, who appreciated the wholeheartedness he plays with every time he takes to the pitch, whether things are going for him or not.

But Thompson only played 30 minutes of league football for Millwall last season, so maybe it was inevitable it would take time to find consistent form.

He didn’t start a game for Kenny Jackett’s side for over a month, before returning to the line-up in a 2-1 win at AFC Wimbledon and then being thrust into that new position against Fleetwood.

“In the second half I moved up to number 10, playing more as an attacker with a bit more freedom. I really enjoyed it,” Thompson told the News this week.

“There were two central midfielders sitting behind me. I can’t recall ever playing there. I have played more of an attacking role in a two, but that was one of the first times as a 10. You’re more attacking with more freedom to make things happen. It gave me more of a chance to express myself.

“Everything I’m doing and everything I’m doing when I’m playing is improving me. It’s a learning curve and it’s something else that I can add to my game. I’ve wanted to add goals for a while now and maybe I can do that in this sort of role.”

Thompson knew he was likely set for a new role this season despite taking a full part in Millwall’s pre-season. He was fifth-choice midfielder at the club, and there were a number of sides that wanted to sign him for the season.

“I had an inkling that I would be going on loan at some point,” he said.

“I wanted to do pre-season at Millwall because anything in pre-season can change a manager’s mind and change the dynamics of your season.

“I thought if I went in and did a good pre-season with Millwall then I might get a chance. It didn’t work out so I came on loan and hopefully this develops my game more to help me get back into the Millwall team when I get back.

“There were a few clubs that came in but I thought Portsmouth would be the best option for me. They’re a massive club, similar to Millwall with passionate fans. It’s great to come here and play at Fratton Park.

“It is tough being away from home, but luckily I’ve got my girlfriend down here with me.”

Portsmouth are currently top of League One. Thompson added: “I knew they’d be up there doing well but the start that we’ve had is unbelievable.

It’s been brilliant to be a part of. I think it does come with some pressure, yeah, but you put pressure on yourself. I want to be at the top of the table and so do all the other boys.

“We’re just going out there every week trying to make sure we stay there.

I’ve played a lot of games in League One, so I knew what to expect and what I was coming into.

“I think I’ve settled in well and done alright.”

There are sure to be more personal twists and turns to come, but Thompson is embracing the whole experience.

“You can’t come on loan and think you’re going to play every week.

You can’t play 100 per cent every week, that’s not going to happen throughout the season. The manager’s got to use the squad wisely and change it around. I knew that when I was coming here. That’s going to happen at every single club, unless you’re Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo you’re not going to walk into any team.

IT’S OFTEN said by managers and players that when things are not going your way you just need one to go in off your backside – but this is probably not what Neil Harris or Jed Wallace had in mind on Tuesday night.

In the 46th minute of a game that Millwall had largely dominated and certainly created the best chances, James Meredith gave away a free-kick that though careless was from a defendable position to get to half-time at 0-0.

Latics midfielder Lee Evans didn’t even strike the dead ball that well, not getting the elevation to take it right into the danger area that he would have wanted.

But running across goal to try to clear, Wallace half-turned and the ball flicked off his back – rather than backside – and crept past Ben Amos at his near post.

Here we go again.

It was the seventh goal Millwall had conceded from nine shots against them in three-and-a-half games.

And it was unfair on Wallace, who had typified Millwall’s attacking intent and it seemed only a matter of time before the home side would make a breakthrough.

Instead they had managed to concede despite the opposition having no shots on

target.

It would have been easy then for Millwall to feel sorry for themselves.

There can hardly have been many more setbacks – from refereeing errors to almost every shot against them going in to now own goals – in the early stages of the last four seasons of Harris’ time in charge. But no one could ever say that under Harris Millwall sides have succumbed to selfpity.

Far from it. Harris revealed that Shaun Williams delivered a rousing half-time talk to his team-mates. In that time Aiden O’Brien was warming up with coach Adam Barrett, and when the fourth official’s board flashed before the start of the second half it was Meredith’s number that was up. That meant Shane Ferguson moving to left-back with an emphasis from him on attack as the best form of defence. Millwall went for their opponents but almost fell two goals behind when James Vaughan got through and Ben Amos had to bravely dive at the striker’s feet to avert the danger. It was already an injustice that the Lions trailed by one.

Wigan had barely been an attacking threat but minutes later Vaughan was running into a sliver of space in the box before he tumbled in the vicinity of Mahlon Romeo. Unbelievably for the defender, referee James Linington pointed to the penalty spot and Romeo was left

wondering why the officials seemingly had it in for him, the second time in two games he had been penalised in such fashion, both decisions open to debate.

As if immediately electrically boosted by the miss, within 60 seconds the Lions attacked their opponents’ box, Wallace swinging a cross from Romeo’s pass towards the back post, and Reece James bundled O’Brien to the turf.

Williams had already stepped up at the break, and after talking the talk he walked the walk to fire Millwall level. It was his fourth club goal of the season, already double his 2018-19 total.

It’s always dangerous to feel there is only going to be one winner, especially if you’re a player which could mean taking unnecessary risks.

Seven minutes after that equaliser, Harris sent on club captain Steve Morison, the armband passing to him from Williams.

Morison hadn’t scored in fifteen games and though he’s now 35 and will have to accept a lesser role, he showed he has no intention of going gently into that good night. With the clock ticking down he struck, after magnificent work initially on the right by Wallace and then on the left from the resurgent Ferguson, who played a one-two with Gregory, before he crossed low for Morison to slide home the winner.

Shaun Hutchinson made his comeback from injury with four minutes left to help the side see out the game.

Fortune had favoured the brave. About time, too.

MAD MINUTE: Lions come from behind to defeat Latics

BEN THOMPSON wants to regain a regular place in Millwall’s first team – after first earning the second promotion of his career.

Thompson, 23, is on a season-long loan at League One Portsmouth, who are currently top of the table under former Lions boss Kenny Jackett.

Midfielder Thompson has played thirteen times for flying Pompey already this season, after only featuring in eight games in all competitions for the Lions last season. He played 94 times over the previous two campaign.

Portsmouth fans have been raving about Thompson’s performances, which have also included playing in a more attacking midfield role.

Those supporters of the Fratton Park club would gladly take Thompson on a permanent deal, but he is determined to have a long career with his boyhood club.

Thompson made his Millwall debut a year after Jackett left the club, and he sees similarities between his current boss and Neil Harris.

“The training strategies and regimes are quite similar to Millwall, so it’s not been a massive change for me,” Thompson said. “They play direct as managers and want to get up the pitch quickly to play in areas that are

dangerous to the other team.

“I knew that. I spoke to Neil before my loan and he knew that I’d be coming here and it would be similar to Millwall, that’s what he wants. It will benefit me in the long run coming back to have played in a similar style.

“The way I’m looking at it is I’m improving here to go back and get in the Millwall team. I want to go back and prove myself in the Championship.

“I want to be playing at as high a level as possible. I’ve come here to learn.

Obviously I’m here to help Portsmouth up the table, that’s why Kenny brought me in.

“I want to make sure Portsmouth do well, of course, but in the long run I want to be playing in Millwall’s first

Portsmouth are currently the second favourites for the League One title, though there is still two-thirds of the season remaining.

Thompson reached Wembley with Millwall twice, and was part of the squad that won promotion to the Championship on the second of those occasions in 2017.

He said of his current side: “I knew they would be up there near the top of the table. I want another promotion under my belt and there’s no reason why we can’t do it.

“I came here with a point to prove. I want to prove to people that I can do good things. It’s working out at the moment and I want to keep it going.”

Fergie opts to keep schtum

MILLWALL PLAYERS who are set to be out of contract next summer are not discussing the possibility of extensions or new deals as they focus on getting the club out of Championship trouble.

Half of Millwall’s current 22-man first-team squad are on deals until 2019.

Steve Morison recently told the News that he has yet to speak to the club over a new deal but those talks will take place over the coming months.

It is set to be a busy period for boss Neil Harris and chief executive Steve Kavanagh as they negotiate with players and their representatives.

Some of those expiring contracts will also contain options and trigger clauses, though those of Morison and strike partner Lee Gregory do not.

Millwall also offer only one-year deals to players over 30. Gregory turned 30 in August and if he wants long-term security he may have to move away, unless the club reverse their current policy.

Ferguson recently regained his firstteam place after a long period out of the selection picture, but doesn’t want to talk about his future.

“I haven’t even thought about it, to be honest,” he said. “The main focus is just to try and help the team get up the table.

“All that will be left until later. I’ve never once talked about it, I haven’t spoken about it with the manager.

“I’m chilled about it.”
