If we don’t fight for our Safer Neighbourhood Teams they could vanish

A

S A person who helped set up the Safer Neighbourhood Teams in Southwark thirteen years ago, Stephen Bourne is right to speak out about fears that the whole scheme is in danger of vanishing.

The sad truth is that the Met police have been hit by years of cuts and reshuffling at a time of economic hardship. A time which inevitably leads to an increase in crime, as people on the margins of society are starved of resources that central government says they are no longer able to fund.

The Safer Neighbourhood Teams are there to do more than enforce the law and are born out of such reports as the 1981 Scarman Report after the Brixton Riots and the 1999 MacPherson Report after the killing of Stephen Lawrence. It is a system that hopes to knock down the ‘them and us’ mentality, so having officers in the job longterm instead of being moved on every eight months is critical to its effectiveness.

Certainly being sent across London to deal with incidents because of a lack of resources will mean that they cannot keep on top of the low-level crimes that escalate into wider problems, as we have witnessed this summer.

Of course Southwark Police cannot be blamed, but as Stephen rightly points out “the time has come for politicians, the Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick, and the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan” to take notice and fight for Safer Neighbourhood Teams, so they are not lost in the wider reshuffling of the Met and the current merger taking place with Lambeth.

Local media company created video, which stars Rotherhithe artist Ed Gray exploring area

PAUL WELLER has released the first single from his new album and eagle-eyed fans from south London were quick to spot Walworth landmarks in the music video - and Rotherhithe artist Ed Gray.

Movin' On is the first track to be released from True Meanings, is 60-yearold Weller's fourteenth solo album and the 26th from the former Jam hit-maker's career.

The video - posted on YouTube last Wednesday - follows Rotherhithe-based artist Ed Gray as he walks through Walworth Road and Elephant and Castle, interspersed with scenes showing him creating a beautiful painting inside a studio.

Incredibly, the painting was completed in just a day - and the entire video finished in under a week.

Readers will be familiar with shots of the Nags Head, Clubland, and the exLabour HQ, John Smith House peppering the finished product.

Producer Mark Baxter told the News: "Myself and my business partner at Mono Media Films, Lee Cogswell, have worked with Paul Weller a few times recently, so we pitched to make a video for his latest album 'True Meanings' once we knew it was complete.

"Paul gave us the song 'Movin' On' and it was my wife Lou who thought of an artist in it somehow after listening to lyrics like 'the evening sky is painting itself'.

"Our treatment was to use the everyday 'beauty' of a normal high street

juxtaposed with the artist interpreting the song in art form.

"As I'm from around SE5/SE17 the urban area had to be the Elephant and Walworth Road for me, as I like to 'big up' the area and the talent within it if I can.

"My role is one of a producer/writer at our company, so sorting logistics locations, budgets, and shaping up of the treatment.

"I have worked with Ed Gray before so knew he was very talented and was perfect for this project.

"He also loves Paul Weller so it all tied in nicely.

"We filmed all day on the Walworth Road, and in Elephant, on a Wednesday, then into Ed's studio on the following Saturday 10am until midnight.

"Lee edited on a Sunday and Monday and delivered it on early on Tuesday.

"Very tight schedule, but Lee and Ed did a fantastic job.

"The record company, Parlophone, loved it and it came out in support of the album this week."

delighted to feature in the video and produce the painting unveiled at the end - even though he only had 24-hours to complete it - as he is a big Weller fan.

"I have always been inspired by Weller's work and have used his lyrics as titles for my paintings before.

"It was a really exciting project to be involved in.

"It was a challenge producing his work within just 24-hours - when his pieces can normally take months to complete.

"We had to do it very quickly.

"It was all filmed in one day - quite a stressful day.

"But for something that happened so quickly it worked really well.

"I didn't know if I would be able to do it, and do something good."

"I saw it as a song about creativity, and the importance of love and relationships, while walking through the streets of Walworth.

The former St Thomas The Apostle teacher confirmed he is planning to put the painting up for sale in future.

Battle Royale at Peckham Conker Championships

CONKER ENTHUSIASTS will do battle at the annual Peckham Conker Championships, held at Brick Brewery on Saturday.

Organiser Chris Quigley says the event is an antidote to the 'straightlaced World Conker Championships'.

In the alternative Peckham tournament, those competing will have the option of playing with Battle Royale Rules - where 'anything goes' - or follow 'orthodox' play.

Those playing Battle Royale are allowed, and even encouraged, to harden their conkers with vinegar, use super-glue, stampsies and tangles in their efforts to win, and 'adopt any kind of hitting position'.

This year's event is the second outing since the inaugural competition in 2017. Organised by the Peckham Conker Club, more than 100 players are expected to play on the day.

All ages are welcome to play on Saturday, October 6, either as under18's from 3-4pm, or over-18's, from 4-6pm in the Brick Brewery on Blenheim Grove.

82-YEAR-OLD CYCLIST DIES AT ROAD SET FOR SUPERHIGHWAY ‘CULL OF NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICE’ www.southwarknews.co.uk/news

TRIBUTES HAVE been left to an 82year-old cyclist who tragically died in a collision on Saturday on a street earmarked for a new Cycle Superhighway.

Flowers and cards have been left by family and well-wishers to the grandfather, who was killed after being struck by a Mercedes Benz in Evelyn Street, Deptford, at 10:15am.

Police and the ambulance services rushed to his aid, but the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Grandad, you will never understand how much I loved you. Why was you taken like this? I love you always and forever,” one moving card left at the scene of the collision read.

Another family member paid tribute to the “wise, strong, independent” grandfather “who taught me so much.”

Other well-wishers left candles, teddy bears and notes of condolence near to the lampposts where the collision took place.

Cycling safety campaigners said the tragedy reiterated the need for the CS4 highway, a proposed 2.5 mile segregated cycle lane from Tower Bridge to Greenwich, to be installed.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS with the Met are ‘beginning to fracture’ amid fears neighbourhood police officers could ‘disappear altogether’ as cuts, a merger with Lambeth, the World Cup and even Donald Trump’s visit leave Southwark Police in disarray.

Across the borough, a cost-saving drive has seen the number of safer neighbourhood team officers cut, and independent police advisors say those still in post are struggling to cope with their bigger workloads, on top of being taken out of the borough at short notice and to respond to urgent challenges across London.

Although dedicated ward officers are kept solely focused on their wards, their safer neighbourhood team colleagues are not. Officially they can be pulled away to work on New Year’s Eve, Notting Hill Carnival and any ‘major incident’.

One of the independent police advisers who helped set up the scheme in Southwark in 2005, Stephen Bourne, told the News: “These officers continue to work hard in their communities, but sometimes they are faced with too many demands, especially with this year’s rise in gang crime and youth violence.

“In reality our Safer Neighbourhood officers are sometimes abstracted and this leaves them struggling to keep up with the work they are trying to make progress with in their wards,” going on to warn: “If communities do not speak out against the reduction in Safer Neighbourhood Teams, they will eventually vanish altogether.”

The first teams were formed of a Sergeant, three police constables and several Police Community Support Officers, or PCSOs. In 2011, Southwark still had 22 safer neighbourhood team covering a ward each, with 42 constables and 72 PCSOs.

An initial consultation on the proposed CS4 Superhighway published in March found overwhelming support for the idea, with 83 per cent of respondents in favour of the proposed route.

Modelling has been completed on the sections of the highway managed by TfL, with detailed design plans starting late last month. It is due to be constructed from June 2019 to December 2020.

A spokesperson for the Mayor said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the cyclist tragically killed in Deptford this weekend.

“The Mayor is committed to doing more than ever before to make cycling safer across London, which is why he’s investing record amounts in new cycling infrastructure like new cycle Superhighways, Quietways, and improving London’s most dangerous junctions across London.”

As the News went to press, the pensioner had not yet been formally identified but his next-of-kin have been informed.

THE NEWS understands that a well-known gang member and ‘catalyst’ for the Elmington Estate multiple stabbing is now behind bars.

But now Sergeants are responsible for several wards and the number of dedicated ward officers (constables) has also been cut.

Data obtained by the Lib Dems in April showed Southwark lost 60 officers last year - one for every week. And in June, The Sunday Times published official police data cross referenced with Ministry of Justice figures to show the number of unsolved crimes across the UK, with just 8.95 per cent of crimes solved in our borough – compared with the national average of only 9.1 per cent.

As the News reported in the aftermath of the multiple stabbing by the Elmington Estate on August 16, Camberwell Green’s police team has now been ‘cut to the bone’ with just two dedicated ward officers, and one Police Community Support Officer (PCSO).

Shockingly, the team has even had one of these positions vacant since June 2018.

continually pushed back.

Across Southwark’s safer neighbourhood teams there are also concerns that the merger between Southwark and Lambeth police, currently underway, is also causing chaos and confusion and inhibiting officers’ ability to tackle other types of crime.

At a time when community policing matters more than ever, residents are disappointed that well-known and wellliked officers are being moved from community work to response teams after just months on the job.

At a Camberwell Community Council meeting on Wednesday, September 5, Sergeant Richard Price admitted that Safer Neighbourhood Police in his three wards of Camberwell Green, St Giles and Champion Hill had dealt with an ‘unprecedented’ series of incidents, including Donald Trump’s visit and World Cup England games – all on top of a series of horrific tit-for-tat gang stabbings in the area.

At the same meeting, he made the admission that “residents are somewhat reluctant to come forward to give us information about youths gathering and incidents taking place on the estate”, whilst reassuring attendees that any information given to Crimestoppers – if people do not want to go to police – is treated anonymously by the independent charity.

He confirmed officers would be renewing their efforts to tackle highly visible and intimidating street drinking, drug using and begging in Camberwell, an issue residents said had escalated while officers’ efforts were elsewhere.

Most advisors and residents the News has spoken with are full of praise for the officers in the area they know, and understand the difficult situation the Met is placed in when it has been ordered by the government to save £325 million in the next three years.

As Mr Bourne told the paper: “Southwark Police cannot be blamed for the cut backs, loss of police stations and the distractions caused by borough mergers, in my view a terrible idea which is already beginning to fracture police and community relations.

“However, the time has come for

Southwark Metropolitan Police Service was unable to provide comment before going to press, despite being contacted last week.

However, a spokesperson did confirm that the number of dedicated ward officer numbers will not be cut, and they will continue working within their community and will not be taken out the borough.

However, it confirmed safer neighbourhood officers are being taken from Southwark to deal with incidents elsewhere – stopping them from doing their job.

As part of the merger and restructure, the force is hoping to reshuffle the safer neighbourhood teams to help soften the blow when officers are removed on a temporary basis.

The force also confirmed all officers’ positions are being reviewed but no final decisions have been made on staffing.

THE IDENTITY of a seventeenyear-old jailed for ten years after a stabbing that left his victim needing full-time care for the rest of his life can now be revealed.

Jeremiah Ntim, from Opal Street, SE11, was sentenced to ten years in prison for grievous bodily harm on Friday, September 28, at Blackfriars Crown Court after pleading guilty.

Ntim was also handed an extended sentence of five years on licence.

His victim, 30-year-old Dwayne Kevin Buchanan, from Birmingham but living in Kennington at the time of the attack, needed heart surgery and was left with a serious brain injury.

The court heard that police were called to reports of a man being stabbed on Kennington Road at 11.38 on Friday, March 23.

Witnesses reported seeing two men arguing in the street, with one shouting loudly and the other asking to be left alone.

One man stabbed the other and made off, with officers finding the victim in a critical condition.

Police arrested Ntim on suspicion of attempted murder on Tuesday, April 3, after taking clothing from the scene for forensic analysis and matching Ntim's DNA with a saliva sample on his victim's jacket after witnesses reported seeing him spit on the victim.

After arresting Ntim at his home, police also found a folding knife that

had been thrown from a window, and a mobile phone with pictures of Ntim with what police say is a 'gang', and text messages showing he may have been a member himself.

In the notes section of his phone, there appeared to have been drill rap lyrics written by Ntim: "Man can't talk about chinging.

"I love hittin chest or belly / Any sort of disrespect I'm leavin the whole street messy... / Funny boys us wanna play clown / No joke when u bump into one of my team / I Ching man n don't make a sound / Den I take a rest next to the crime scene."

Ntim was charged on Wednesday, April 4.

Police describing the information given by witnesses as 'invaluable' in securing a strong prosecution case against him.

THE FAMILY of a man left with a brain injury and in need of round-the-clock care for the rest of life have told of their devastation at his unprovoked attack by a 17-year-old jailed last week - saying they are no longer sure if Dwayne knows who he is.

Dwayne Kevin Buchanan, aged 30, was attacked on Kennington Road on Friday, March 23, at 11.38am.

His attacker, 17-year-old Jeremiah Ntim, from Opal Street, SE11, was arrested on Tuesday, April 3 on suspicion of attempted murder and charged on Wednesday, April 4.

He appeared at Blackfriars Crown Court on Friday, September 28, and was handed ten years in prison for grievous bodily harm with a further five years on licence.

The prosecution were able to build a strong case with DNA evidence taken from saliva found on Dwayne's jacket, and photos of Ntim on on his phone with gang members, text messages appearing to show he may be a member himself, and song lyrics saved on the notes section of his phone bragging about his love of violence.

But his victim's family say they still have many unanswered questions and have been left devastated by the attack and life-long impact on Dwayne.

Dwayne was taken to hospital in a critical condition, had heart surgery,

and sustained a 'serious brain injury'.

He spent four months in hospital before moving to a rehabilitation facility.

Tragically, he will need full-time care for the rest of his life.

In a formal statement, Dwayne's family said: "Dwayne is a loving and caring man with the best personality we have encountered.

"We are absolutely devastated about the fact he was attacked on the streets of London, so far away from home and the people who live and care for him.

"It is difficult to put into words just how heartbroken we are, we felt that we have lost the best bits of Dwayne.

"His mind that is left behind is so very weak and fragile and he becomes vacant before your eyes.

"We are left with so many questions, many of which might never be answered, and such uncertainty over his future.

"We are not sure if he really remembers who is and how much he means to everyone.

"We deeply miss having him around to talk to and share our daily life with him.

Scout given gallantry award for saving life of stab victim CAMBERWELL

A YOUNG scout from Camberwell has been given a gallantry award after her quickthinking saved the life of a man stabbed outside her home.

Sixteen-year-old former Kingsdale Foundation School student Lois Mulhall attends the Phoenix Explorers' scout group.

Last year, her first-aid training were put to the test last year when her father witnessed a young man being repeatedly stabbed outside their home.

After the attackers fled, Lois gave the victim first aid and directed her parents - neither of whom had first aid training.

Mum Joanne explained: "Last November my husband Tony was walking our dog, it was about 11pm.

"A man came running down the alley/walk way screaming and there were about eight to ten people running

after him.

"He got cornered and they were stabbing him.

"All this happened in front of Tony, who then brought him into the block once they had stopped and run off.

"I was already on the phone to 999 because I had heard the commotion and looked out the window and Tony had motioned to me to call the police.

"He brought him into the hallway of the block and I was calling Lois from upstairs.

"Tony put him on the floor and went outside to look for the ambulance.

"Once Lois had seen him she ran and got towels and was telling me to keep speaking to him.

"She told me what to do basically, like how to get him into recovery, and helped me do it because he was a big guy.

"We were talking to him and I had my hand on his neck which was pouring with blood, but Lois realised that it was his back that was the worst

and needed the most attention, so she got more towels for it and was applying pressure to it.

"At first I was worried to push to hard because I thought I'd hurt him, but she was saying to push on the wound harder.

"She was also telling me to scream at him to wake up because he was starting to lose consciousness.

"Then they police turned up and took over, they were amazing.

"I wouldn't have had a clue what to do and really don't know what I'd have done without her there.

"We are very proud of her.

"She's been part of the scouts for years and it's obviously paid off."

The victim was taken to hospital and spent two weeks in a coma, when his life 'hung in the balance'. He has now made a full recovery.

According to the emergency services, without Lois and her parents' help, he would have died before paramedics arrived.

Man wielding machete in market square

A MAN wielding a twelve-inch machete threatened a teenager during a row in Bermondsey on Friday afternoon, witnesses told the News.

The two, one thought to be around fourteen and the other about twenty, were having a stand-off around 1:30 pm at the Blue Market Square, just off Southwark Park Road.

Shoppers said that the teenager picked up a chair and threw it at the older man, hitting a parked car in the square.

The older man then allegedly pulled out a twelve inch machete in broad daylight to threaten the teenager with, chasing him around the parked car.

The teenager managed to get on his bike and cycled away.

The man ‘wielding the machete’ is said to have put the weapon away and walked off in the direction of the Lucey Way Estate, before officers could arrive on the scene.

Police were later called, but could not find any trace of them.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to the scene following reports of an altercation between two individuals but there were no trace of them on arrival.”

Could bootcamps halt crime?

A SERIES of 'bootcamp' events for teenagers at risk of violent crime in Southwark are beginning this October after a successful run in Lambeth.

Twenty-four teenagers from Southwark, aged between thirteen and sixteen, will be selected to join the next 72-hour bootcamp - with the aim of stopping them from becoming victims, or perpetrators, of knife crime.

The events are run by Personal Independence Support (PIP), a not-forprofit organisation that works with police to tackle youth crime.

According to its bosses, the scheme has already shown success, claiming that 64 per cent of the young offenders from Lambeth who attended its bootcamps outside the borough have not committed further crimes since.

Police will be helping to identify teens in mainstream education, and those who

have been excluded or are in what is termed 'alternative education', who will benefit from the scheme.

Starting with an activity-filled weekend away in Sussex in October, the young people taking part will then benefit from a series of other opportunities held at school.

The organisers believe that by pushing mental and physical boundaries, and working as a group, the teenagers can help overcome negative, outside influences such as peer pressure.

PIP chief executive, Michelle Quayle, said: “We believe that every young person has a choice, and it is vital to support them to realise they hold the keys to open up opportunities and not to be defined by bad things that may have happened or let pressure from others impact their futures.”

She is keen to stress that the bootcamps are 'nothing to do with military-style shouting - but everything to do with the young people themselves learning how to deal with conflict, personal responsibility, team working and effective communication'.

Man charged with SJ murder

A TWENTY-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with the murder of Joshua Boadu.

Police charged Denillson Davis, of Montgomery Avenue, Hemel Hempstead last Friday with the murder of Joshua, who was fatally stabbed in Bermondsey on June 11.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at Camberwell Magistrates' Court on Saturday.

A 17-year-old man who was arrested last Thursday (September 27) on suspicion of murdering the apprentice engineer has been released under investigation.

Last week police reissued an appeal for people with any information to come

forward.

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command are investigating.

Joshua, 23 – known as SJ to family and friends – was fatally stabbed in the chest outside Helen Taylor House in Linsey Street during a broad daylight attack in June.

The apprentice engineer was put on life support at King’s College Hospital after the stabbing where his family kept a bedside vigil, but he sadly passed away eleven days later when his heart stopped beating.

Bird feeders ‘blamed’ for rodent infestation

A PAN of oil left on an electric hob is believed to have caused the fire which swept through an Aylesbury Estate flat last week - with firefighters saying that the blaze was made worse by the resident trying to tackle it first.

The fire broke out on a split-level flat on the fourth and fifth floors of the fifteenstory block on Thurlow Street in Walworth at 10.42am on Monday, September 24.

The brigade has now revealed investigators believe the cause of the fire was an electric hob being accidentally switched on and then igniting a pan filled with oil.

A spokesperson said: "This incident shows how important it is to never leave cooking unattended.

"If you do have to leave the house, always make sure you turn the heat off before you do.

"It is also a timely reminder to people never to try and tackle a fire yourself – as the occupant in this incident discovered the fire and attempted to remove the pan to the balcony, which spread the fire throughout the property.

“Our message if a fire breaks out is simple – get out, stay out and call 999.

Never try and tackle it yourself.”

As the News reported, the family were safely out the property before firefighters arrived after a Divine Rescue food bank food bank volunteer raced upstairs after seeing the blaze and kicked down their door.

His friend, Mike Briscoe, told the paper: “We were on the grass having a chat when we looked up and saw this billowing smoke coming from out of the flats.

“It only took a moment of screaming and Harry went straight upstairs as I rang 999.

He continued: “I myself ran into the building and saw smoke coming down the stairs and just managed to get up the first few when I could hear crackling of the fire.

“Harry had to kick the door down to get them out – and even though he is asthmatic he went upstairs again to check everyone was out.

Mr Briscoe continued: “By the time he came back down he was covered in soot and had difficulty breathing.

“The ambulance and the brigade came and said he should get an award – but he

told them he didn’t do it for that. I’m so proud of him for doing what he did."

In a formal statement the London Fire Brigade said: "One woman and two children left the property before the brigade arrived.

"They were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by London ambulance service crews and taken to hospital.

"Another man was also treated at the scene for smoke inhalation."

The brigade says it received sixteen calls about the blaze.

Six engines and around 40 firefighters from Old Kent Road, Peckham, Dockhead, Brixton, Dowgate and Whitechapel rushed to the scene - and had the incident under control by 11.22am.

PARK-GOERS HAVE been left horrified by a rat infestation at Burgess Park - which the council blames on 'well-meaning' bird feeders.

One reader wrote to the News expressing his disgust at the worsening problem, seen first-hand on a Sunday walk.

"We were horrified by the number of rats we saw running out of and into the water,” he said, claiming anglers blamed council pest control budget cuts, and were worried about health dangers.

Rat urine is known to carry the waterborne infection Leptospirosis, more commonly known as Weil’s disease.

In a statement to the paper, community group Friends of Burgess Park said its members were aware of the issue - and concerned about the amount of food left in the water for rats to feed on.

A spokesperson said: "Rats are a problem in Burgess Park especially around the lake.

"Friends of Burgess Park are concerned about the amount of food, like bread, that is put out for the water fowl, which will also feed the rats as well.

"If people want to feed the birds try chopped up lettuce or peas.

"Bread (or rice and pasta) is not good for the birds or the lake water quality."

Southwark Council's pest control budget has not been cut compared to last year, with the local authority similarly claiming the infestation is more likely to have been caused by 'well-meaning people'.

Cllr Victoria Mills, Cabinet Member for Finance, Performance and Brexit, said: “We have been actively trying to reduce the number of rats in Burgess Park for some months now and although we have noted a small drop in numbers, our efforts are being hampered by well-meaning people who throw food into the duck pond for the birds.

"We have posted signs asking people not to do this, as it is known to attract rats and hope that they will help us to resolve the problem.”

Six fire engines were called to reports of a flat fire on Bittern Street at 15:10 on Saturday.

No-one is reported to have been hurt in the fire on the third floor of Bittern House, while forty firefighters managed to get the blaze under control at 17:20.

block was also damaged, while the five-room flat is said to have been gutted by the blaze.

Neighbouring flats are said to have largely escaped fire damage.

Kind-hearted staff at the nearby Charles Dickens Primary School opened its doors for residents to shelter inside during the evacuation, while generous neighbours handed out clothes and blankets.

Other Good Samaritans bought fish and chips for residents stranded outside of their homes.

The News understands that the

majority have now safely returned, while the inhabitant of the destroyed flat has been staying with family and friends.

Ward Cllr David Noakes, who visited the flats on Sunday, said: “There’s only one flat that’s really damaged from the fire, but a number of the flats below have had significant water damage unfortunately.

“I visited all the residents on that side of the building to make sure that some of the immediate issues are picked up.

“The last thing they want to do is go through the council’s main switchboard to try and find the right department, so the council needs to makes sure there’s a single point of contact.”

Fire crews from Dowgate, Dockhead, Lambeth, Old Kent Road and Whitechapel fire stations attended the scene.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade confirmed the incident and said: “The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.”

He seized a light machine gun and charged towards them, forcing them to withdraw, despite being wounded twice. He died in hospital on August 8, 1944.

Man, 62, jailed for stabbing housemate at Nunhead hostel NUNHEAD

A MAN has been sent to prison for at least twenty years after being found guilty of stabbing his housemate at their shared hostel in Nunhead.

Steven Thwaites, aged 62, from Marmora Road, SE22, was found guilty at Blackfriars Crown Court on Wednesday, September 26 of murdering 60-year-old Vincent Douglas in December last year.

He was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years.

Police were called to the supported living hostel in the early hours of December 1, at 2.32 am, to reports of a male suffering from stab injuries.

Officers found the victim in the garden where they tried to save him, before he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A postmortem held the next day at Greenwich Mortuary confirmed the

cause of death was a stab wound to the abdomen.

He had also been stabbed in the liver, face and hands.

According to the Met, Thwaites misled officers by claiming the victim inflicted the wounds on himself, and

then gave differing accounts of where he had seen the body - first claiming Mr Douglas was on the ground floor, and then claiming he had been on the top floor.

Thwaites also told officers he had taken the knife that caused Mr Douglas' injuries and washed it before placing it in a drawer in his kitchen.

He was treated for lacerations on his hands which he said were sustained while trying to take the knife from Mr Douglas.

CCTV footage later showed the victim going downstairs with a head injury, captured him with a stab wound to the abdomen, and being chased outside by Thwaites.

Thwaites was arrested on suspicion of murder when he was discharged from hospital.

In police interviews he continued to give differing accounts of what happened and was charged with murder.

Detective Inspector Will Reynolds, from the Homicide and Major Crime

Command, said: "This was a very sad and unnecessary death.

"Both men were vulnerable adults, living in supported accommodation and without any history of conflict.

"Vincent Douglas posed no threat at all to Thwaites, as evidenced by the CCTV, played to the court.

"For reasons, still not understood today, Thwaites stabbed Vincent Douglas a number of times with a knife taken from the kitchen.

"On his arrest he gave a number of confused and conflicting accounts for how Vincent received his injuries and when interviewed tried unsuccessfully to suggest that Vincent stabbed himself whilst trying to take his own life.

"Vincent had no history whatsoever of self-harm and the jury rightly convicted Thwaites of murder.

"Vincent's family are deeply upset by his death and are still coming to terms with how he could have been taken from them in this way, so unexpectedly.

100th anniversary of WWI to be commemorated

THE 100TH anniversary of the end of World War One is being commemorated with a series of events at the Royal British Legion Southwark Community Club in Kennington this month.

The events will pay tribute to those who served in the First World War – known as the first global war – and remember the moment the guns fell silent.

The series of events will begin this Saturday, October 6, with an afternoon ‘sausage sizzle’ from noon to 3pm, followed by another from 9pm on Saturday, October 13.

There will also be the chance to ‘decorate your own poppy’ on Wednesday, October 10, from 122pm, and an afternoon tea party on Wednesday, October 17, from 123pm where school children will be singing, reading poetry and displaying their art.

On Saturday, October 20, the club is holding a celebratory evening event and closing the commemorations on Wednesday, October 24, will a screening of the film War Horse. The RBL Community Club, is based at 34-40 Braganza Street SE17 3RJ.

Police investigate report of rape

PECKHAM: Police are investigating after a woman reported she was raped in a car park in Peckham last week.

The 21-year-old said the attack took place at a car park on Copeland Road, SE15, between one and four in the morning on Thursday, September 20.

Detectives from the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command have launched an investigation.

The Met confirmed today that enquiries are continuing but no arrests have been made.

According to the latest figures released by police, there were 71 crimes reported to police classed as 'violence and sexual offences' in the Rye Lane area in July of this year alone. Anyone with information should call 101.

Warning over spate of phone ‘snatches’ SOUTHWARK: Police are warning people in borough to be extra vigilant after a spate of phone 'snatches'.

Officers from MPS Southwark took to twitter on Saturday afternoon to share the news that three phone thefts happened in 'a very short space of time' on Union Street, Great Dover Street, and Redcross Way. The incidents are believed to have been committed by a 'lone suspect' on a black moped.

As reported by the News last year, north of the borough a particular hotspot for moped thefts - with criminals targeting tourists near London Bridge.

A BERMONDSEY youth club is facing a bill of several thousand pounds after being hit by a spate of graffiti – allegedly by middle-aged men with professional equipment.

Downside Fisher, on Tanner Street, has been graffitied four times over the past two months, with witnesses telling the club it was carried out by middle-aged men with a white van and a cherry picker.

The club, which is completely reliant on donations, was told that it would cost at least £2,000 to remove some of the earlier graffiti – and the bill for the later tags would be even more.

Phil Annis, the club’s Operations Manager (pictured) , said: “In the past it’s been young people doing it. But now it’s a van and a crane, a cherry picker, going up there. Before they were just signing their tags, but now it looks professionally done.”

The operations manager has been told by the owner of a business opposite the club that at least one piece of the graffiti was carried out by four middle-aged men over the August bank holiday.

Mr Annis, 60, said: “He told me there was four blokes, in their forties to fifties, going up with a cherry picker on the back of a white van.

“He thought I was having work done up there, he actually spoke to them. So he didn’t think anything of it, he just ignored it.

“I had a quote for the first lot, the lower layer, and that was just over £2,000. I haven’t had a quote for the whole of it because we couldn’t even afford £2,000.”

The graffiti has now begun to cover the

centre’s signage, which the manager fears will take away potential donations.

Mr Annis, who has been volunteering at the club for thirty years, said: “Now we have to get a new sign to show we’re a boxing club again.

“A key thing is people say ‘we know who you are because we see you from the railway.’”

The sixty-year-old, who also organises the club’s outdoor activities, said the graffiti was taking away funds from providing activities for kids.

He said: “The graffiti is taking away from us, it’s taking money away from us.

“I’ve got a trip on this weekend. It’s costing me £1,000 to take eight young people to the Peak District for the weekend. If I get quoted £3,000 that’s three weekends I’ve lost to take our kids out of London.”

“I was told it was something to do with an online game but I don’t know, I’m just guessing.”

Mr Annis said the council wasn’t able to clean it off because it was too high, although they had previously addressed road-side graffiti. It has also been reported to the police.

Downside Fisher, which has been operating for 110 years, has to raise £300,000 to stay open for youngsters in the area, whom they only charge 50p a night.

The centre wasn’t opposed to graffiti if it was professionally done and the space was rented for the artwork, he said.

In a message to the graffiti artists, the operations manager said: “People shouldn’t be doing this. Find somewhere else, rent a space. Give us an income from it. They could rent space off us, we’d rent it to them, if they wanted to do a proper bit of graffiti, and then come back every so often to re-do it.

“But at the moment they’re taking away from who we are.”

OUTRAGED OVER the closure of his local sorting office in Silvester Road, East Dulwich, resident John Dignan recently travelled the oneand-a-half mile journey from his Overhill Road home to the new Royal Mail collection point at Highshore Road.

At just 10am, he found himself 48th in the queue, but after half an hour of waiting outside he was greeted by a sign put up by staff saying: “Due to massive resourcing issues beyond the staff control items from the previous day and other issues will not be ready.”

In a formal complaint submitted to Royal Mail, Mr Dignan has said his experience waiting outside in the weekend cold snap was ‘disgraceful’ and ‘shames’ the service – and says he is worried he will be in for more disappointment in the coming days when he tries to collect his parcels.

He told the News: “I’m just pleased the weather was as it was. Pneumonia as a result of being exposed to Peckham’s winter elements for over an hour is a high price to pay simply to collect a set of preloved napkins.

“The great British public deserve some praise. They acknowledged that the fiasco was totally out of the control of the charming and much put-upon Royal Mail counter staff, and from what I can see, treated them with the utmost sympathy and respect.”

Other residents have been left similarly angered by long collection queues, interrupted delivery service, and ‘extortionate’ parking costs.

Twitter user Karen complained: “Currently over 30 minutes outside Peckham sorting office with at least another 45 minutes wait following your closure of Silvester Road in East Dulwich – an absolute joke and you should be ashamed of yourselves – not to mention the extortionate parking costs.”

While Simon Edwards claimed that since the closure his first class post had

been ‘delayed by over four days’ – and risked ruining his daily coffee subscription. Others are already panicking about Christmas.

Highshore Road resident Derek Kinrade said the move had made traffic worse for him and his neighbours, telling the News: “Having suffered for years with Royal Mail vans racing to and fro, and articulated lorries backing the length of the road to deliver to Rye Lane shops, the closure of the East Dulwich sorting office has doubled the traffic to the famous 'meeting house' depot.”

As the News reported last week, the decision to close the Silvester Road sorting office in East and relocate to Peckham had sparked outcry and a hard-fought residents’ campaign that Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes had taken all the way to parliament.

Writing in the News last month, Ms Hayes said “It is testament to an organisation which is quite clearly putting profit before the residents it serves that Royal Mail has not changed their plans for SE22.”

The move went ahead in the face of continued opposition on September 17, and has been branded ‘total chaos’.

“We are working very hard to resolve the teething issues that we had last week.

“The office has extended its opening hours from today, which now means it will open to 3 pm every day, late opening on a Wednesday until 8 pm and until 3pm on a Sunday.

Manor Place transformed

A PLANNING application for temporary units for Elephant and Castle traders during the shopping centre's demolition has been submitted to Southwark Council's planning committee.

The proposal from developer Delancey says that shopping centre tenants will be given first refusal for the flexible space - a total of 5,072 square feet.

The units will be available during the redevelopment. Long-term, the developer plans to create Castle Square as a retail and leisure area that people will stop and spend time in, rather than just passing through.

Delancey is also working with Southwark Council and independent advisers to set up a 'relocation fund' to help cover expenses for traders displaced by the shopping centre regeneration.

Despite Southwark Council's planning committee approving the shopping centre plans, the Greater London Authority has still yet to green-light the controversial project.

council and Delancey before the Mayor's office will give its assent.

A spokesperson from Delancey said: “Our vision is for the new town centre at Elephant and Castle to support the existing economy and community.

MANOR PLACE Depot and the old public baths have been transformed into a 'new manor' of luxury flats.

Many News readers will remember the site as the home of Manor Place Baths, which closed in 1976 after more than eighty years as a laundry and bathing place for the people of Walworth.

The wash-house was originally built so people without running water could bathe and clean their clothes.

The building was also well-known for holding amateur and semi-professional boxing matches, including some of the first ever televised on the BBC and, famously, the Kray twins fought at the venue.

The depot has now been turned into one, two and three-bedroom flats with retail and entertainment.

Physio completes English Channel swim A

physiotherapist swam across the English Channel after being inspired by her cancer patients to raise money for Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity.

Samantha Poulsen completed the gruelling 21-mile swim from Dover to Cap Griz Nez in France in 12 hours and 40 minutes.

Thousands of jellyfish, busy shipping lanes, an injured shoulder and a water temperature of around 17 degrees – 10 degrees cooler than an average swimming pool – were just some of the obstacles she faced.

The 27-year-old, who is originally from Australia, looks after patients on Blundell Ward at Guy’s Hospital, which specialises in caring for people who have had surgery for head and neck cancer.

She said: “I have never come across a more resilient and inspiring group of patients. I’m blown away by their determination on a daily basis so I couldn’t think of a better group of people to fundraise for.”

So far Samantha has raised more than £5,200 for Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity.

Kieron Boyle, Chief Executive of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity, said: “We often hear of patients fundraising

Calling for more organ donors A man who got married and had a child after a transplant is encouraging other people from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds to donate.

Jide Akinola, 51, received a lifesaving combined kidney and pancreas transplant at Guy’s Hospital in 2002. Before then he was suffering from major complications caused by type 1 diabetes.

One in five people who die waiting for a transplant is from the black, Asian and minority ethnic communities and are more likely to suffer from a disease which may require a transplant.

However, only 7% of donors last year were from these backgrounds, with family refusal being the biggest obstacle to organ donation.

Jide was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 16 and by the time he went to university it had started to affect every part of his body. He was added to the transplant waiting list in 1998 – four

years before suitable organs were found – and started dialysis, a procedure which replicates the function of the kidneys, the following year.

Jide said: “I remember getting the call saying a suitable match had been found like it was yesterday. It was one of the happiest and scariest days of my life. Once I had recovered I noticed I had more energy, felt healthier and my skin improved.”

Before his transplant Jide did not think he would be alive long enough to get married or have children because he was so unwell.

He met his wife Jerilen after his transplant and the couple married in 2013, before having their son MarcJayden the following year. Jide said: “I never dreamed it would be possible to get married and have a child. I have a lot to be grateful for.”

Jide said: “I always think about my donor on the anniversary of his death. He’s always in the back of my mind and I make sure that I move forward in life and better

Getting ready for work

A SCHEME designed to help people who have experienced homelessness get back into work was held at Guy’s and St Thomas’ in September.

The week-long Work Ready Programme saw staff from the Trust acting as mentors and giving practical support to prepare 30 local people for work.

The programme included a residential weekend where candidates take part in confidence-building activities like orienteering and fitness classes.

Participants complete a CV writing class, IT and budgeting tutorials and practical courses such as health and safety training. The week is topped off by visits to Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals, a construction site and retail superstore.

The programme was developed

by Thames Reach, a leading London homelessness charity, alongside management consultancy McKinsey & Company.

On completing the programme participants will be offered a work experience placement in the Trust, as well as a mentor for 12 months.

Teenager designs charity cards to thank hospital AN INSPIRATIONAL Teenager has designed two charity greeting cards for Evelina London Children’s Hospital after receiving lifechanging spinal surgery.

Katie Braybrook, 15, designed the cards to raise money for the hospital after she successfully underwent surgery 18 months ago to straighten a curve in her spine.

Katie was diagnosed with scoliosis, a condition that causes the spine to curve, aged 12, after her mother, Sue, noticed her posture was changing.

In January 2017 surgeons at Evelina London straightened the curve in Katie’s back by placing titanium rods and screws along her spine during a six-hour operation.

Katie made a full recovery from the surgery, which corrected her posture and made it easier for her to walk.

Jonathan Lucas, a consultant orthopaedic and spine surgeon at

Evelina London who treated Katie, said: “Katie’s determination to make a positive difference to the lives of our patients is hugely inspiring.”

Improving air quality for Southwark schools

ROTECTING OUR children’s health should always be top priority.

Sadly, Southwark is amongst the worst three boroughs in London for its number of schools affected by illegal levels of air pollution.

This is clearly unacceptable and something we should all be concerned about.

October is International Walk to School Month. With 1 in 4 cars on the road during peak hours on the school run, this provides a perfect opportunity to ditch the drive to school in order to make a big difference to our air quality.

Nonetheless, as a mother of two young children, especially when it comes to getting them ready on time in morning, I know that for many busy and beleaguered parents this can be a challenge.

However, we all need to come together and play our part to clean up our air where we can, even if it means making the effort to walk to school with our children whenever possible. It is also incredibly

important that we crack down on the numbers of idling cars at dropoff and pick-up times, which are some of the worst offenders when it comes to contributing to the toxic air levels around schools.

This week, I will be speaking at a regular community meeting to address the concerns of local parents on this issue and highlight the number of actions that we are taking at City Hall to address poor air quality.

For example, I have been pleased to see that two Southwark schools, Charlotte Sharman Primary School and Oliver Goldsmith Primary School, were included in the Mayor’s Air Quality Audit programme.

This programme identified 50 of the worst schools for air pollution exposure and recommended some appropriate mitigation measures, such as moving school gates, implementing timed drop offs and embellishing and extending school entrances with greenery.

IN RESPONSE to Donnachadh McCarthy’s absurd idea of charging passengers an extra £5 for each journey into North Southwark, in his column in last week’s Southwark News.

Does he honestly think that people that have to pay visits to Guy's, St Thomas, and the London Bridge hospitals should be penalised for being elderly, sick and in many cases disabled ?

Does his brain not take into account that not everyone can walk or cycle?

People who work hard all year and are going on holiday and have to get to either Gatwick or Luton from London Bridge - should they be penalised as well for having suitcases ?

Tourists coming to visit The Shard, Borough Market etc should they be penalised as well?

How about charging cyclists £5 a go when they go through North Southwark to pay for all the cycle lanes that have taken up so much road space and are only really used in the rush hours causing more cars to be stationary and causing more pollution.

AT FIRST glance it appears how wonderful the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust are to the parent club. (Rabble Rouser, Southwark News 27/9/18).

It is great news that the mega-Container has finally been moved to Tooting’s ground, but I feel the importance of their fundraising is overemphasised. A third of profits on sales, whilst welcoming, does not add up to much. And let us not forget that they have exclusive rights offered by the Club for merchandise sales AND no ground rent for their spot in the ground, unlike food vendors, for example.

So 30% of profit is not that much of benefit after all. True, they do offer several match sponsorships, for example, but I would hazard a guess that all of the money they hand over during the course of a regular season would not even cover a week’s wages of the playing and staff budget.

So, yes, the Container has been an increasingly important cash cow…but NOT really for the Football Club itself, which battles to break even

week after week, due to being forced out of Champion Hill. There are buckets shaken by the “12th Man”, share issues released, and major sponsorship opportunities.

So much the Trust do is good, and they are excellent at promoting the work they do. Now it’s time to follow the lead of other Trusts up and down the land and invest properly in the Football Club they profess to care so much about.

Phil Daniels on his new role as Dickens HOW YOU perceive actor Phil Daniels will depend on your age, writes Michael Holland...

Those born in the 50s and 60s will remember his iconic film roles in Scum, the violent insight into young offenders in borstal, and as the disillusioned Mod, Jimmy Cooper, in Quadrophenia. The next generation will have caught up with Daniels’ film work in Goodbye Charlie Bright, and from TV, with the Only Fools and Horses prequels and a long stint in Eastenders. But unbeknown to those who are only aware of his screen output, Phil Daniels is a respected member of the theatre community. He has been working with the best scripts, the best actors and best companies for many years and it would not be out of order to describe him as a Shakespearean actor.

I caught up with Mr Daniels during a break in rehearsals for his role as Charles Dickens in Martin McDonagh’s A Very Very Very Dark Matter. You realise immediately that there is no side to him, he thinks of his craft as just a job and talks of people who ‘have their feet on the ground’, when meaning that they have no pomposity about them.

This seasoned actor began getting roles at a young age and pretty much continued working from then on. He felt school was there to hold people back and found that trips to the theatre, as well as performing in socially aware productions, was motivating for him.

‘I remember going to the Royal Court in the 70s, where work by young writers at the time were saying more to me about life,’ he recalls. ‘They seemed better for me than being told off by teachers,’ he laughs.

Being open to a different world must have had some impact on his subconscious mind. ‘I never really decided to be an actor,’ he begins, ‘but that’s what paid the rent, really, so I kept doing it.’ He jokes that even now he has still not decided if he wants to be an actor, and then relates a tale of when he was unemployed for a while after he had become famous: ‘That was all a bit weird, lining up to sign on the dole while signing autographs for people in the queue with me.’

Phil Daniels has never been afraid to have a go at something. He tells me how he refused a lot of film and TV roles that would have stereotyped him in order to go off to Exeter and play The Fool in King Lear. He has made

albums with a band he formed and jumps at the chance of a musical - ‘I love songs and singing,’ he says candidly. There are so many aspects to his oeuvre that he cannot be pigeonholed. And this man does not spend

together for the run of A Winters Tale this summer, which meant the actors naturally had great onstage rapport with each other, and that helped in creating a village atmosphere. The performances had some bright moments but at times were slightly dull. The notable performances were from Sam Crane as Rev. William Mompesson for his intensity and the sensibility he brought to the part; and Rose Wardlaw, whose playing of the young Harriet Stubbs brought life and energy to the piece as a

with kind words on the children performing in the show (‘Austin is very good’).

‘A Very Very Very Dark Matter,’ he explains, is ‘complicated and very, very dark - but funny too.’ Black comedy seems to be the style of writer McDonagh, who Daniels says has been in rehearsals almost everyday observing and doing little rewrites when necessary. But because he and the director have collaborated before, I’m guessing his input is not intrusive but part of the evolution of the creativity surrounding this new work.

We wound the interview down with talk of the podcast he records about his beloved Chelsea - The Chels - and his hopes for the play: ‘I’d like to see people there who don’t usually go to the theatre as they will be in for a nice surprise.’

Actor one to watch out for A WELCOME return to one of my favourite performance spaces The Cervantes Theatre in Southwark for Ay Carmela!, a two-hander set in Belchite at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, writes Ingrid Uhlen Gray...

IN PREVIOUS incarnations of the Globe, new writing would naturally have been the lifeblood of the theatre. However, for some of us, the idea of going to the Globe to see new work seems at odds with our expectations of what the Globe theatre has come to represent. So I was delighted to see Eyam, a new piece of work by Matt Hartley, writes Christopher Peacock...

Set in 1665 the play takes its name from the small Derbyshire village. The drama opens up with the arrival of a new reverend and as the tensions build in the village an outbreak of bubonic plague forces the villagers to accept the leadership of Rev. William Mompesson.

They take the decision to quarantine Eyam in an attempt to halt any potential spreading of the disease.

Hartley’s play has a great balance of comedy and drama that lends itself to the darkest of topi, so with the macabre nature of the humour and a smattering of innuendo, the play bounced along.

With the additional two walkways, increasing the potential exits and entrances, there were also nice moments of farce that added to the action. This intimate space also worked really well in adding to the claustrophobic nature of small village life; as they were facing their trauma and hardships, you were right there with them.

The majority of the cast have been

time over-thinking what he does, waving it all away with, ’it’s all part of the job.’ Which does not mean he doesn’t take his work seriously. It is evident that he does because of the level of the work that he continually gets cast in, and from his history with some of the best in the business.

‘When a good writer or director offers me a part,’ reveals one of London’s finest, ‘I think, “That’s nice”, I must be doing something right.’

And that is all justified with Daniels’ casting as Charles Dickens in A Very Very Very Dark Matter. He says he was drawn to the play by the writer Martin McDonagh, whose illustrious career includes Oscar winner Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and too many theatre awards to mention, and the attraction of working with director Matthew Dunster. As he tells it: ‘I thought, yeh, that’ll be good, I’ll enjoy doing that.’

I listened as he spoke of a real meeting of Dickens and Jim Broadbent’s character, Hans Christian Andersen, which has become a scene in the play, before he praised Broadbent (‘He’s a lovely fella and very enjoyable to work with… His feet are on the ground’). He continued

whole, as well as lightening up the darker moments.

The unique atmosphere created in the Globe really helps add another dimension to the work staged there and I feel that Eyam benefited from it greatly in producing another entertaining evening.

Eyam is on at Shakespeare’s Globe, Bankside, SE1 until October 13th.

Written by one of the most respected authors of contemporary Spanish theatre, Jose Sanchis Sinisterra, the plot follows leftist variety artists Carmela and Paulino as they unwittingly cross the border into the fascist region recently liberated by General Franco and the National Army.

The play opens strikingly with historical footage projected onto the floor which sets the scene elegantly as we are slowly and silently introduced to Paulino, played by Ivanhoe Norona. Paulino staggers across the space clutching a bottle of red wine and steeped in grief from the harrowing loss of his wife Carmela.

The Republican flag immediately has a strong symbolic presence as Paulino unravels it from its hiding place.

Carmela, played by Madelena Alberto, returns from the dead to unfold the tragedy of her last hours and the story of the performance they were forced to stage in order to entertain Franco’s fascists.

The naturalistic translation of the play by John London is perfectly suited for the intimacy of the

Cervantes theatre space. Despite the sinister themes Ay Carmela! is a tragicomedy and the play was warmly received as such by the audience.

Norona, with roots in various Shakespearian roles, has an impressive clownish physicality and tempo in his interpretation of Paulino’s emotional turmoil. He is clearly an actor to watch out for having recently landed a part in the acclaimed television series The Crown.

Innovative recruitment firm set to shake up job market

AN INNOVATIVE new London recruitment firm will disrupt the status quo and level the playing field for graduates who can’t afford to do endless work experience or internships just to stand a chance of landing their dream job.

CATHERINE ROSE is the current Mayor of Southwark and a committed Dulwich Hamlet FC fan.

She has been directly involved with the club’s ongoing struggle with the owners of their Champion Hill ground, Meadow Residential. I met Catherine, in true Hamlet fashion, in the Cherry Tree pub in East Dulwich on a Saturday afternoon.

The relationship between Catherine and Dulwich Hamlet started back in 2014, when she was campaigning to create a new secondary school in East Dulwich.

She asked local parents to recommend local organisations the new school should partner with. Large numbers suggested that the school partner with Dulwich Hamlet. This immediately convinced Catherine of the importance of the club to the local community. She described her first game in November 2014 to me with relish. “I have limited technical knowledge, but the thing I found about non-league football is you can literally smell the turf.”

Meadow Residential took full control of the development from previous partners Hadley in 2016, just before Catherine was elected as a councillor. In her own words, she “quickly became known as someone who was constantly on about the situation at Dulwich Hamlet and seen as the internal nag”.

As is well documented, events began to take a turn for the worse in 2017. In November of that year, Catherine proposed a council motion making it clear that should anything happen to the club that the council would commit its "best endeavours" to support the club’s interests at Champion Hill. In 2018 things

Catherine argues passionately against Meadow’s actions. “Champion Hill contains a registered war memorial.

Given this is the centenary of the end of the First World War, it is extremely worrying that we have no idea of the condition of that memorial, and we're seemingly unable to hold a service of remembrance.” Furthermore, the eviction has had a major impact on local children.

“Literally hundreds of primary school children engaged with Champion Hill through the after-school clubs, holiday clubs and football camps, all that’s been taken away.”

making clear to Meadow the realities of the situation. The first thing Meadow should do is commit to allowing the club back into Champion Hill on an autonomous footing, as a sign of their genuine commitment.

Any redevelopment must be proportionate and contained within an area that ensures the club has the capacity that it clearly needs going forward – a greater capacity than is currently available. In addition, the facilities must reflect the wider role of the club within the community and be accessible to local schools.”

Catherine is putting her body on the line as well as her work to support the cause.

In 2019, she will undertake a charity run raising money for the club’s football academy ASPIRE. She modestly says: “Well obviously I’m not a runner! But I thought I should lead by example. So, I’m doing the ‘couch to 5k’ with the wonderful London City Runners.” She invites local residents to come along and join her.

Away from all the politics, Catherine still has time to mull over the greater questions in life, including the team’s onfield prospects this season. “Mid-table mediocrity would be amazing, thank you very much! I think the step-up has been a significant one but I’m impressed by the core of the team and the new signings have really begun to gel. In Gavin [Rose, the manager] we trust! I think we will give a good account of ourselves and we can consolidate our position in this higher league. In many ways the fact we’re still fielding a team at all is a huge victory, so anything above and beyond that is a bonus. But a nice FA cup run would be great!”

But the club was evicted and nearly stripped of its name (after Meadow trademarked the Dulwich Hamlet name) during a dramatic period in March 2018, that saw a debate in Parliament and the Save DHFC March. “It all went a bit crackers,” Catherine said. The eviction and trademark went too far and "crossed a line" by its targeting of the community.

This motivated her to become mayor to gain a civic platform from which she could support the club.

Catherine continues: “Before, they were able to just do their thing in the morning then stroll down, wander in and wander back. Now, the journey is more problematic – lots of elderly fans also find the journey a bit too much to do regularly – so in that literal sense the club is less accessible than it was.” Catherine also bemoans the impact of the eviction on local businesses: “There’s been a clear material impact on the restaurants, bars, pubs, food outlets along Lordship Lane, they will lose a full season of extra income from Saturday home games and week nights, which is very significant to the local economy.

One developer should not be able to have such a detrimental impact on so many smaller traders.”

These arguments are often heard among Hamlet fans, but many fear that Meadow may well not care. However, Dulwich fans can take heart from Rose’s insistence that compromise is in the property developer’s interests too. “If they’re ever going to realise their wider ambitions in London, they need to sit down and work towards something unique and meaningful. If they do that then the story is about the success of the community getting behind a much-loved local football club, and the willingness of the developer to be reasonable. If they don’t, then the story is about them. I’m a firm believer that it’s never too late to do the right thing.”

The mayor lays out how she thinks progress could be made. “There has been an initial approach to establish dialogue again with the club. It’s only right and proper that the club begins cautiously,

Gavin Rose’s side have as many wins in their last two games as they had in their opening nine league fixtures.

“Now we’re more ruthless, even from the ball, making sure we clear our lines and don’t take risks,” Akinyemi said. “With scoring goals, we always knew we were going to score, we just had to get those first few goals and they’d keep coming. We’ve got a lot of good finishers in here. In training we put away our chances.

“First half we had a few chances and could’ve been a bit better on the ball, personally I could’ve held up the ball better. But we just kept going and kept the momentum, kept it positive, and when we came out [before the second half] the gaffer didn’t even say much, he just said stay on the front foot and get the ball in behind, and we capitalised on what was going on.”

TED CHEESEMAN once sparred with Charlie Wynn on Christmas Day – now he’s doing his bit to help out his former Fisher club-mate.

Bermondsey’s Wynn, 29, suffered a bleed to the brain during sparring in March and had to have life-saving

surgery, with his family setting up a fund to raise money for his rehabilitation.

Cheeseman, like Wynn a lifelong Millwall fan, announced this week that he will be at The Den before the Lions’ Championship fixture against Aston Villa this Saturday when he will be selling tickets to his next bout, with commission from all the tickets sold on the day to be donated to Wynn’s fund.

Bermondsey club earn grappling gold

RECENTLY, SOME of the competitors from Bermondsey’s Tokei Judo Club travelled to Croydon for the annual specialist Newaza competition.

The ground-grappling sport is similar to Brazilian Ju-Jitsu where the vast majority of the action involves fighting on the ground to get a pin, strangle or armlock submission.

As competitions such as this often appeal to both Judo and Ju-Jitsu exponents, it adds an extra spice to events and guarantees a good turnout.

Tola Bishi, one of the black belts from Tokei, represented the

Southwark club in the men’s U90 kg category.

Despite a long day, as the numbers in the competition meant it took time to go through the categories, Tola did not disappoint his teammates. Using his expertise from both Brazilian Ju-Jitsu and Judo, he won all his contests by submissions well within the time limits with a variety of loop chokes to come away with gold.

As Tola is also training to be a stuntman, he could not resist the temptation of a little flourish after receiving his gold medal. He celebrated in style with a back-flip off the rostrum.

Cheeseman, 23, with a professional record of 14-0, fights Reading’s Asinia Byfield for the British welterweight title at the Copper Box Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on October 27.

“Charlie Wynn and me sparred loads and loads of rounds when we were at Fisher. One year (2013) we sparred on Christmas Day,” Cheeseman told the News this week.

FISHER CLIMBED to tenth in the SCEFL Premier Division table after a 2-1 win at Punjab United last weekend.

Dean Harrison’s side conceded a penalty early on but goalkeeper Hossam Hassan, who had been responsible for it, redeemed himself with the save.

Fisher went in front through Chandler Kasai in the 30th minute, but Ryan Jarrett levelled two minutes later.

After a disappointing defeat to Lordswood in their previous league game, Fisher were determined to get back to winning ways, and they sealed the win when Richie Hamill scored from the spot after Mathieu Ramsamy had been fouled.

Fisher face K Sports in the league this Saturday at St Paul’s in Rotherhithe.

Rye kick late but just fall short PECKHAM RYE produced a stirring response last weekend away to Burrage Blues in the Dewar Shield first round, but just fell short of completing what would have been an epic comeback.

The visitors went 3-0 down to Burrage, who are four divisions above them, and also lost Danny Warner to the sin-bin after the award of a penalty to their opponents.

Duke Binitie took advantage of a goalkeeper error to pull a goal back, but the hosts soon restored their three-goal advantage.

Alvin Spencer’s side refused to give up the fight, and Anthony Dennis made it 4-2 with his second goal of the season.

With five minutes left, Neil Williams fired in a free-kick, and Warner – back on the pitch after his earlier indiscretion – gave his side hope with a close-range volley.

But despite that spirited comeback against the Premier Division side, the Rye couldn’t find an equaliser. Spencer said: “We learn from today and we gave a good account of ourselves. We wish Burrage all the best.”

AFTER SEEING his side concede another two late goals at The Den on Saturday, Neil Harris was not in the mood to mollycoddle his players.

The Lions’ 3-2 defeat to Sheffield United plunged them to second-last in the Championship.

“If they can read and write, then they should be able to see where we are in the table,” Harris snapped afterwards.

“Table doesn’t lie, it never lies. It can give a false impression at times early on, but ultimately the results haven’t been good enough, the performances haven’t been good enough and we have to dig deep at these moments.

“We have to stick to our beliefs and do what made us so good last year. But ultimately, individuals have to perform better than they are. That’s the bottom line, they have to play better. Because some of them have not hit standards they have hit in the past for me and that’s why we are losing games.”

It was a fifth home game in the Championship this season and there has been only one win, against Derby on August 15.

They have conceded nine goals in those games, eight of them after the 73rd minute.

That is surely partly a consequence of having so little of the ball. Sheffield United had two-thirds of the possession in the first

half and deservedly led through Billy Sharp’s goal. On Saturday Millwall were 2-1 up with eleven minutes to go and still lost to two David McGoldrick goals.

It would be unfair, however, to analyse Millwall’s defeat and fail to analyse the performance of referee Andy Davies, who awarded two highly contentious penalties to the visitors. At best, you could perhaps give the benefit of the doubt to the referee, but both incidents were not only debatable but also maybe not even inside the area.

Davies gave a penalty against Shaun Williams in the first half after he deemed the midfielder had handled the ball. But it appeared to be outside the box. It didn’t matter, as Ben Amos pulled off a superb stop – his third penalty save this season following two in the EFL Cup shootout win over Gillingham in August – to tip Sharp’s spot-kick onto the bar.

In the 79th minute, Williams bumped into Mark Duffy from behind. It looked more clumsy than anything, but again Davies pointed to the spot and this time McGoldrick took it and sent Amos the wrong way.

Afterwards, Harris commendably made no attempt to blame the referee. "These late goals must be down to concentration in the group and a winning mentality.

"You can talk about bad luck or good goals against us, but these were poor goals and people not doing their jobs - that's what it boils down to.

"If they want to do their jobs properly, and they want to be considered for team selection, they need to show more leadership and more quality in themselves in key moments.”

Chris Wilder felt his side “fully deserved a win”, and Sheffield United are on a

different trajectory to the side they went up with from League One in 2017.

One of the positives for Millwall was the performance of Ryan Leonard, who brilliantly assisted Lee Gregory as the hosts came from a goal down to lead 2-1 after five minutes of the second half.

Leonard spotted Gregory’s run and lofted a perfect pass over the top of the Blades defence, and Gregory finished past Dave Henderson, the 30-year-old’s first league goal since the opening day against Middlesbrough. Jake Cooper had headed Millwall level two minutes into the second half, as it appeared Harris’ half-time teamtalk had done the trick. But, given their form at home this season, Millwall were always likely to give up chances, especially given the vibrancy of the Blades attack. McGoldrick made it 2-2, the Lions only had themselves to blame when they conceded a third.

The worst thing was Millwall had already been warned, after Sharp was left free to head in what he thought was a third before an offside flag ruled it out.

But just a few minutes later, the visitors fashioned a cross from a similar area on the right, and despite six Millwall players in the box, none of them picked up McGoldrick, who tapped in Duffy’s low delivery from three yards out. It was inexplicable that they tried to play offside given Duffy was about four yards from the end line when he crossed.

Moro: ‘I was at Leeds – this is nothing’

STEVE MORISON acknowledges Millwall are in a “blip” – but says it’s nothing compared to his time at Leeds or a previous spell with the Lions.

Millwall go into this Saturday’s game against Aston Villa at The Den with just one home win in the league this season.

Morison was on loan at Millwall in the 2013-14 season when Steve Lomas was sacked in December and under his successor Ian Holloway the club only escaped relegation to League One on the final day.

Morison played for Leeds between January 2013 and his return on a permanent deal to Millwall in the summer of 2015. During the striker’s time at Elland Road, there were seven managerial changes – including Neil Redfearn being appointed three times – as well as three different owners as the club finished thirteenth, fifteenth and fifteenth in the second tier.

Millwall have dropped ten points from winning positions in their five games at home this season, and have conceded eight of their nine league goals at The Den after the 73rd minute.

Morison was asked this week if this was his most difficult period in professional football.

“I spent two-and-half years at Leeds, mate, this is absolutely nothing, this is nothing. This is a blip,” Morison responded to the News.

“The year I had here with Lomas and Holloway was shambolic for all types of reasons. That was a lot more difficult.

“We’re doing alright. There are 30-odd games to go, it’s a hell of a long way to go. There are massive games coming up and we just need to keep working at it.

“It’s a huge game at The Den at the weekend and hopefully numbers turn up.

If we go into the international break without a win then we’ll reassess it. We need to just do it for 90 minutes rather than 60 or 70.

“It’s not [a] false [league position]. It’s right because the table doesn’t lie. We should have more points at home, we should have had thirteen points before last weekend.

“We can’t hold on to a lead at home at the moment but we’re working hard, we’re doing everything we can to turn it around and we’ll keep plugging away.

“We can’t really put it down to anything other than a lack of concentration. We’re maybe stepping off when we’re ahead.

Last year and the years previously if we were ahead in the last ten or fifteen minutes – I don’t have the stats – but we didn’t often lose those games. We got into a mentality that we weren’t going to lose those types of games.

“Maybe we lose our focus a bit. It’s difficult to pinpoint it because it could be an individual error and how do you legislate for that? Apart from saying to that person ‘don’t do it again’, but it’s done so it doesn’t matter.

Harris alluded to a problem with the player’s mentality after that game.

Scotland international Archer was then left out of the next four matchday squads, before returning to the bench before the defeat to Sheffield United at The Den last Saturday.

Archer then started in goal for Kevin Nugent’s Lions under-23 squad for their Professional Development contest against Charlton in a behindclosed-doors game at Millwall’s training ground last Monday.

Archer kept a clean sheet as Millwall won 1-0 through Lewis White’s freekick.

Harris said Archer had “trained extremely well” since he was dropped. Archer faces a fight to get his

first-team place back, with Ben Amos starting the last six games. Amos has also saved three penalties this season.

Archer is out of contract next summer, and it is unlikely he would be satisfied playing second fiddle to Amos if he can’t get his place back.

Archer was this week left out of the Scotland squad for their games against Israel and Portugal next week.

Harris watched the under-23s in action against their local rivals.

“He’s got good characteristics, Jordan. He was back in the squad last Saturday, he’s part of our squad and has trained extremely well,” Harris said.

“He’s been great around the place, I enjoy working with him and he’s a

Millwall’s opponents this weekend have gambled by paying large transfer fees and big wages to players trying to get back to the Premier League.

The Lions have a fraction of the budget of Aston Villa. Millwall paid over £1million each for Tom Bradshaw and Ryan Leonard, seven times less than what the Villans paid for their striker Jonathan Kodija.

“That’s the difference, we’ve spent just over £2million on two players and these teams are spending ten, 20 million,” Morison said. “People expect that we sign two players for a million and they’re going to start pulling up trees and be world-beaters. They’ve signed to be a part of the squad and help the squad and to push us on.

Training levels have gone up because we’ve now got better players.

“Everyone’s fighting and pushing each other on. Look how well Gregs [Lee Gregory] played last Saturday, he was fantastic. I thought Mahlon [Romeo] was really good last weekend as well. People are being pushed for their places and they’re reacting.

“We’re just not quite putting it all together at the minute.

“Villa are a massive team, but we drew against them and beat them last season. They’re under pressure, but under pressure because they’ve spent loads of money.

“We’re under pressure because expectation has gone up a little bit and we’re now maybe where people thought we would be last year. It’s difficult but I’m sure we’ll turn it around.”

JORDAN ARCHER made his competitive comeback for Millwall this week and was praised by Lions boss Neil Harris – putting to bed speculation that the goalkeeper’s days at the club were numbered.

There were some doubts about the goalkeeper’s future this season after he was dropped for the Championship fixture against Swansea on September 1, before he watched the game from the stands rather than the bench.

NEIL HARRIS has admitted Millwall are under pressure – but stressed there is more on this weekend’s opponents Aston Villa.

The Lions have won just one league game at home this season and are desperate to go into the second international break buoyed by three points at The Den. Villa were one of the title favourites before the start of the season, but arrive at The Den without an away win in the Championship since the opening day.

The Villans spent over £60million on new players in their first two seasons in the Championship after relegation from the Premier League for the first time in 2016, and also paid big wages to the likes of John Terry as they gambled on getting back to the top tier.

That outlay led to Financial Fair Play concerns, and they limited their spending in the last transfer window.

Harris believes dealing with pressure is part of the job.

“We’re under pressure at the moment because of expectation and just the pressure I put myself under

“There’s pressure for all different reasons at this level, we’re all aware of that. You have to deal with it and embrace it, and still enjoy what you do. We know going into a game against Villa that if we’re at our very best we’ll compete with anybody, especially at The Den. “It’s the same message from me.

We’ve competed against five top sides there this season and deserve to have a lot more points that we have.

“We have to make sure we are at our very best and we will get results.”

STEVE MORISON expects talks with Millwall over his future at some point this season – but not until after the Lions have improved their league results.

Morison, 35, is out of contract at the end of the season, and, in contrast to the two previous seasons, he does not have a clause to activate an extension.

Lions skipper Morison is one of a number of players out of contract next summer. The list also includes Lee Gregory, Shane Ferguson, Byron Webster, Conor McLaughlin, Jordan Archer, Ryan Tunnicliffe, Tom Elliott and David Martin.

That will entail a lot of decisions and negotiations in the coming months, including whether to extend Morison’s Millwall career beyond his 36th birthday.

Millwall currently only give one-year deals to players over the age of 30.

Morison joined Millwall for a third spell in the summer of 2015, and has played 166 times with Neil Harris in charge. He has made a total of 303 appearances for the club.

Millwall haven’t won at home in the league since August 18.

Morison was asked by the News when he expects to hear about the club’s intentions and said: “Whenever the football club wants to have that conversation.”

He added: “All I can do is keep playing, keep plugging away. I’m sure no one is going to want to have that kind of conversation until we start winning games of football.”
