Station plan must not be stopped in its tracks

R

e-opening a train station at Camberwell would be a ‘questionable’ use of puiblic funds, according to a recently released study by Transport for London.

Campaigners and residents have been making the call to re-open the station for many years, but to no satisfactory end.

In fact, over a year ago we said in this newspaper that we wondered how far down the tracks this proposal would go. We’re saddened, but not surprised, to have been proven right.

Local MPs Harriet Harman and Helen Hayes have waded in. Ms Harman has said she is ‘deeply disappointed’ with the decision, adding that there is ‘dangerous overcrowding’ at Denmark Hill and Nunhead stations.

As we report in today’s story, around 10,000 people work at King’s College and Maudsley hospitals; then there are the patients and their visitors to consider. This doesn’t even take into account the needs of local residents!

The TfL report said there would be ‘local benefits’ to re-opening the station, but that the ‘negative impact on existing rail users currently outweigh the benefits to Camberwell’. Does this mean Camberwell will always lose out?

The fight is not over yet. The final decision will be taken by Network Rail.

Campaigners have vowed to continue the fight, and said plans for the station are ‘delayed, not derailed’.

A re-opened station would alleviate a lot of pressure at Denmark Hill station and on the roads - we must try to make sure the plan is not stopped in its tracks.

But readers are baffled as many complain that it is ‘dirty and crime ridden’

READERS HAVE been left baffled by the news that Peckham has been named as one of the coolest neighbourhoods on earth.

Last week Time Out published its full listing of the top 50 coolest neighbourhoods as voted by fifty local Time Out editors and 15,000 people.

According to its editors: “Over the last few years, Peckham has cemented itself as London’s preeminent cultural hotspot.

“Streets once associated with the sitcom Only Fools and Horses are now lined with video arcade bars, cult nightclubs and street food pop-ups.

“With some of the British capital’s most reputable arts colleges just a 436 bus ride away, the area has become a breeding ground for south-east London’s burgeoning creative scene while staying true to its multicultural roots.”

Recommended highlights include Vietnamese cuisine from Banh Banh, Frank’s Café, the Peckhamplex cinema and the Victoria Inn near Peckham Rye. Ranked at number eleven, Peckham is ranked ahead of New York’s West Village and Barcelona’s Sant Antoni, and is the only area of London to make the cut – placing it firmly as the city’s cool capital.

But many Southwark residents were quick to highlight crime levels, gang warfare and mess on the streets blighting their area.

Dan McCabe’s reply on our Facebook page: “I lived there seven years until last year, it’s a dirty crime-ridden, druginfested smelly sh**hole.”

The latest figures from the Met show that 159 crimes were reported in the area immediately surrounding Peckham Road in July 2018 – 62 of which were related to violence, or sexual offences.

While in the vicinity of Rye Lane, a staggering 324 crimes were reported the same month – 85 of them linked to antisocial behaviour.

As the News reports this week, Peckham has also seen more visible rough sleepers bedding down outside Peckham Rye Station, with residents increasingly concerned about anti-social behaviour including human waste on the pavement.

This summer, foodbank Pecan, based on Peckham High Street, told the News the number of people using the service had doubled as it appealed for donations.

A high profile gang feud between Peckham-based Zone 2 and Walworth and Kennington’s Mostcow17 is also believed to have behind a spate of fatal stabbings - and a terrifying double shooting right next to a primary school.

“Apart from Manzes pie and mash shop the rest is a complete shithole”, wrote reader John Bigwood on our Facebook page.

Mark Myers assumed Time Out must have mistaken our patch of Southwark with the Kentish countryside village of East Peckham, ‘no knife crime or rapes there’, he said, while another reader wondered if we had got Peckham confused with leafy East Dulwich.

Another stunned reader, Janet Robb, said: “Many a time I’ve walked up the high street and had to remind myself I’m not in Milan or Beverley Hills”, while Alan Haines mused: “Think the author

must have had one puff too many.”

But it’s not all bad news, with Time Out saying: “It’s vibrant, creative, alternative, bohemian, original, independent and fiercely proud if its roots.

“It’s amazing to see the way culture brings the community together – you can meet a variety of people whenever you walk down the street and the cinema is still only a fiver!”

Hughes under fire for ‘song at Lib Dem conference’

FORMER MP Simon Hughes has come under fire for allegedly singing a song at Lib Dem conference poking fun at the historic 1983 Bermondsey byelection.

Mr Hughes defeated gay-rights campaigner Peter Tatchell in the byelection campaign, which became infamous for homophobic rhetoric deployed against Tatchell.

The song Marching Through Bermondsey – sung to the tune of the Civil War tune Marching Through Georgia – was part of the Lib Dem’s Glee Club event at their conference in Brighton, which is known for its satirical numbers.

It featured the lyrics “Tatchell hit the headlines, boys" and "Tatchell went, and Tilley came and said that he was straight.”

Neil Coyle Labour MP for Southwark & Old Bermondsey – who won the seat from Mr Hughes in 2015 – slammed the song saying: “Very sad to see that Lib Dems still fail to recognise the disgust and hurt their campaign and this song caused in 1983 and today.

“Their homophobia must end.”

Mr Tatchell also criticised the tune recalling the 1983 campaign as “the dirtiest, most violent & homophobic election in UK in the 20th century.”

Mr Hughes has previously apologised for the homophobia in the campaign which featured leaflets describing the vote as a ‘straight choice.’

As the News’ history of the 1983 election has previously reported, some of Tatchell’s political opponents daubed signs with offensive slogans such as ‘Tatchell is queer’, ‘Tatchell is a communist p**f’ and ‘Tatchell is a n**ger-lover’.

In 2006 the Lib Dem said: “I hope that there will never be that sort of campaign again. I have never been comfortable about the whole of that campaign.”

Mr Hughes later confirmed he was bisexual after being outed by a newspaper.

Homeless encampment outside station ‘shocking’ says residents

homeless encampment outside Peckham Rye station shames Southwark, say residents concerned by a rise in rough sleepers and anti-social behaviour.

Abdullahi Makokha, an IT engineer from Peckham’s Lyndurst Way, told the News: “For the past few months, around Peckham Rye Train Station has become a dump.

“It smells of urine and human poo, filthy and dirty with all kinds of rubbish from furniture, chairs, mattresses, blankets, all kinds of drug paraphernalia.”

Mr Makokha went on to describe the rough sleeping encampment, which has sprung up outside the overground station under the arches, as ‘a shame for the borough of Southwark’, and ‘absolutely shocking’.

His concerns are echoed by Peckham Business Network, which has highlighted urine and faeces, dumped rubbish and rowdy drinkers near the arches in tweets to the council and Network Rail.

In response to our story on page three, reader Derek Kinrade, from Highshore Road wrote to the News

saying: “Is it not remarkable that Peckham should be judged one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world when parts of it are allowed to be the filthiest, for example, behind Superdrug, Rye Lane and Peckham Rye station forecourt?”

Photographs from this week show long-term beds made from wooden pallets surrounded by piles of blankets, beer cans and rubbish.

The sad scene is evocative of the large-scale encampments of the 70s-90s, like Waterloo’s Cardboard City.

But in recent years rough sleepers have once again become more visible across Southwark, which has seen one of the largest rises in the UK, attributed to changes in welfare, lack of affordable housing, and cuts to services such as drug and alcohol support.

According to charity Thames Reach, more than 7,000 people slept rough on London’s streets last year.

The chief executive of Peckham foodbank Pecan, Chris Price, confirmed that the team had seen a rise in rough sleepers, saying last year 82 people were referred to the service due to homelessness.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member

for housing and modernisation, said: “I do understand how people can find begging and rough sleeping around Peckham Rye Station intimidating and I would encourage residents to keep reporting any specific issues, but we know it’s happening, and we are taking a wide range of steps to address it.

“We continue to talk to those who are sleeping on the station grounds and we have assisted some with appropriate housing, but we know others are still using the station to sleep or to beg.

“While we attempt to support the groups via our outreach services, sadly some do not wish to take our help.

“While finding housing for everyone immediately will prove very difficult, we have an outreach team which is doing all they can and will continue to do so.”

And, remarkably, the council has claimed some residents and local businesses are not supporting their efforts getting people into permanent accommodation.

“To complicate the situation, some members of the public and business owners are either not supportive of the council’s efforts to deal with the situation or they are in support of

Beginning of September allowing people to remain homeless at the station,” Cllr Cryan told the News.

The council says improvements taking place at Peckham Rye Station and the surrounding area aim to make it feel ‘more pleasant’.

A new homeless strategy, with a focus on prevention, has also been submitted to the cabinet, and an extra

half a million of government funding has been allocated to Southwark to help tackle the issue.

But several weeks after Mr Makokha first complaint to the council, he says nothing has changed – with photos taken this week showing that it appears this complex problem will not be solved for a while yet.

SOUTHWARK ROYAL Mail users have complained of postal chaos after the service moved its sorting office from East Dulwich to Peckham.

Despite fierce opposition from residents, the service moved its sorting office from Silvester Road in East Dulwich to Peckham’s Highshore Road on September 17.

Royal Mail said the move was necessary as the previous space did not have the capacity to deal with parcels and that the change would have no impact on deliveries.

However, customers have spoken out about the poorer service – facing missed deliveries, long queues and confusion over pick-up locations.

One, Margaret Pedler, said the transition had brought “total chaos” to

the service.

She said: “Royal Mail have been failing to deliver parcels as promised claiming that addresses are inaccessible and they have then left cards or sent emails which still tell people to go to Silvester Road to collect their item.

“But when you click the link to find the opening hours or turn up there it tells you that the office is now closed and to go to Highshore Road! Complete confusion.”

The unhappy customer said she was made to wait for nearly an hour in long queues at the new sorting branch for her parcel.

Bridie Cox, who lives in East Dulwich with her husband and three-month-old baby had a similar experience queuing for a parcel after it was not delivered properly to her home on Saturday.

She told the News: “My new-born baby and I went to the ED sorting office to collect the parcel, but there was a poster on the door saying all post was now in

TICKETS FOR Southwark Park's fireworks display this November 5 are now available.

This is the council's fifteenth fireworks show and once again will be free for residents - and synchronised with music to celebrate Guy Fawkes' day.

The council has promised a 'pyrotechnical extravaganza', describing the show as 'spectacular'.

Tickets are free to anyone living in the borough on a first-come-first-served basis but due to huge demand - last year's event was fully sold-out - people are advised to book early.

Residents from outside Southwark can also attend but will have to pay a small

fee.

Cllr Rebecca Lury, cabinet member for culture, leisure, equalities and communities, said: “Fireworks night is my favourite night of the year so I am delighted that we are able to, once again, provide a free fireworks event for the people of Southwark.

"This year promises to be spectacular and I hope to see as many local people and families taking advantage of their free tickets and enjoying this year’s wonderful community event.”

Gates will open at 5pm with final entry at 6.30pm, with visitors advised to arrive as early as possible.

There will be food, drink and entertainment until 8pm.

“I then had to take the baby on the bus to Peckham and arrived at about 12:25.

I queued for half an hour outside, with my new-born, to collect my parcel.

“At 1pm the staff closed the doors to the office, meaning everyone in the queue was turned away.

“Why they didn’t let everyone in the queue collect their parcels is beyond me.”

Another customer queuing on Saturday, Rachael Penny, added that the “queue was huge” by the time she finally received her parcel but that “staff were doing their best.”

Royal Mail said it had undertaken “detailed planning” to minimise disruption to the service before the move was made.

Sally Hopkins, the organisation’s Senior External Relations Manager, told the News: “We apologise if any customer has mistakenly received a

“Something for You” card giving the East Dulwich address.

We will double-check to ensure that all the old cards are no longer in use.”

The manager added that it was needed to increase “the efficiency of our operation” with lower letter volume and increasing numbers of packages.

Customers also said that they now faced parking charges, which was not the case at Silvester Road.

MP for Dulwich and West Norwood Helen Hayes in this week’s Southwark News wrote: “I have written to the Chief Executive of Royal Mail demanding urgent action. We need the Highshore Road sorting office in Peckham properly staffed and a new pickup office for missed parcels and recorded deliveries to be opened in East Dulwich.”

Woman dead after 'falling' from Bermondsey balcony

A WOMAN was found dead on Tuesday night after falling from the balcony of a Bermondsey block of flats.

Police were called to Chambers Street by the London Ambulance Service at around 8:45pm.

The woman - believed to be in her twenties - was pronounced dead at the scene, on the corner of Chambers Street and neighbouring Llewelyn Street.

The News understands that she fell from a balcony from the Jacobs House block of flats, which is on the Chambers Wharf estate.

No further details have been released about her identity.

Residents who were at the scene told the paper that the unknown woman fell to her death from a fifth floor flat.

It has not yet been confirmed whether the fall was accidental or not but police

are not treating the incident as suspicious.

A Met Police spokesperson confirmed the tragic death and said: "Police were called by LAS at around 2045hrs on Tuesday, 25 September, to a woman fallen from a balcony of flats off Chambers Street.

"A woman – believed to be aged in her 20s - was pronounced dead at the scene.

"At this early stage, the incident is not believed to be suspicious."

A FOOD bank volunteer raced into danger and rescued a family from their burning Aylesbury Estate flat after a fire broke out in Wendover Block on Monday morning.

Forty firefighters and six engines rushed to the blaze at 10.42am on Monday, September 24, which saw plumes of smoke billowing from the fifth-floor.

Mike Briscoe, aged 51, who volunteers at the Divine Rescue foodbank at Thurlow Lodge told the News he was standing outside in the forecourt on the grass area with his fellow volunteer and friend, Harry, when the fire started.

“We were on the grass having a chat when we looked up and saw this billowing smoke coming from out of the flats.

“There were more and more smoke and flames - and then the screaming started.

“It only took a moment of screaming and Harry went straight upstairs as I rang 999.”

Mike says he was the first person to speak to operators, and that crews arrived

within ten minutes.

He continued: “I myself ran into the building and saw smoke coming down the stairs and just managed to get up the first few when I could hear crackling of the fire.

“Harry had to kick the door down to get them out – and even though he is asthmatic he went upstairs again to check everyone was out.

“By the time he came back down he was covered in soot and had difficulty

Naked man brandishing a kitchen knife goes on the rampage at petrol station

POLICE RACED to a Bermondsey petrol station on Saturday morning after a naked man brandishing a 'kitchen knife' burst into the shop and started throwing things off the shelves.

The man ran into the Shell petrol station on Southwark Park Road at around 8.47am. One customer is believed to have been in the shop at the time and fled while a member of staff darted out of view to call the police.

The man is believed to have been claiming that another man was after him and was completely naked, according to a witness.

The ordeal is believed to have continued for around 30 minutes, but no one was injured.

Police confirmed to the News that they were called at “approximately 08:47hrs to reports of concern for a man carrying a knife on Southwark Park Road, SE16.

They added: “The man was detained at the scene and was taken to a south London hospital. It is believed he was suffering from an acute behavioural disorder.”

JAMAICA ROAD was closed on Monday sfternoon following a collision between a motorcycle and a teenaged girl outside Bermondsey Tube station.

The incident caused the westbound lane to be fully closed while police and ambulance dealt with the scene from 16:35, creating long queues down Lower Road.

The pedestrian's injuries are not thought to be life threatening or life changing and she was rushed to hospital as a precaution.

A Met Police spokesperson confirmed the incident between a motorcycle and a girl, who is believed to be 13 or 14 years old.

The spokesman said: "The collision happened at around 16:35 this afternoon. The ambulance service attended and the female pedestrian's injuries are not life threatening or life changing.

The road was re-opened at 17:10.

Thurlow Street as fire fighters arrived.

They were treated at the scene by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, and the fire - which broke out in a split-level flat on the fourth and fifth floors - was contained by 11.22am.

A statement from the London Fire Brigade confirmed the incident and said that they had received sixteen calls about the fire.

"The Brigade was called at 10:42 and the fire was under control at 11:22.

"Fire crews from Old Kent Road, Peckham, Dockhead, Brixton, Dowgate and Whitechapel fire stations attended the scene.

"The cause of the fire is under

investigation."

As the News reported last month, Southwark Council is seeking to reassure tower block residents that a rolling programme of ‘above and beyond’ fire risk assessments is still taking place after published council papers incorrectly claimed type 4 assessments – the highest level possible – had taken place on all Southwark’s 174 high rises, when the true figure is just eight.

The council subsequently apologised for the ‘drafting error’, confirming the work ‘does and will take time’, with these extra assessments scheduled to coincide with planned major works where possible to minimise disruption.

Tesco employee is tied up, robbers steal cash and fags

ROBBERS TIED up and assaulted a Bermondsey Tesco employee before making off with a large amount of cigarettes and cash from the shop last week.

Police were called to reports of a fire alarm by the Fire Brigade at the Tesco Express on Southwark Park Road at around 4:50am on Wednesday, September 20.

Officers then found the employee tied up – although their injuries are not serious – and discovered the store had been robbed.

Detectives believe that three suspects broke into the shop and set off a fire extinguisher in the victim’s face.

They then stole large amounts of cigarettes and cash before fleeing the scene.

The Tesco Express was closed while officers conducted their enquiries.

A Met Police spokesperson confirmed the robbery and said: “Detectives from Southwark CID are investigating and would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the suspects leaving."

A Tesco spokesperson told the News yesterday: “We’re aware of this incident and are working with police with their investigation.”

THE RAIL union RMT has launched a campaign to stop the closure of 51 ticket offices at London Overground stations, including several in Southwark.

The ticket offices at Rotherhithe, Surrey Quays and Honor Oak Park in Lewisham are among those due to be culled.

The union will be leafleting stations affected by the closures on October 3, ahead of Arriva Rail London and TfL completing a consultation on the plans on October 11.

It alleges that the closures will make it harder for passengers to access services, heighten congestion and negatively impact the disabled or vulnerable who

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: “I am calling on Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to oppose this retrograde plan for wholesale closures in the strongest possible terms. Ticket offices play a crucial role at train stations.

“London needs to welcome its passengers, visitors and tourists not with a machine, but a welcoming and friendly ticket office who can provide a full range of services.

“This is just the latest attack on a properly staffed, safe, secure and accessible railway for all and RMT is

determined to halt these plans in their tracks.”

A campaign page on the RMT website has been set up to allow supporters to oppose the closures with a petition directly to London TravelWatch, the independent watchdog.

Jon Fox, TfL’s Director of Rail and Sponsored Services said: “The way customers pay for travel has changed rapidly as they embrace new technology, creating an opportunity to improve the way stations are managed and how staff serve customers.

"Arriva Rail London have been

engaging with their staff and trade unions and are now consulting with rail industry bodies and London TravelWatch about ticket offices on stations where there are fewer than 12 ticket sales per hour.

"We encourage customers to share their views through London TravelWatch.

These proposals will not compromise safety and all stations will remain staffed at all times.”

Arriva Rail London, which runs the Overground services, said it successfully operated sixteen stations without ticket offices, and that data suggests only 5% of ticket sales were made through offices.

Will Rogers, CEO of Arriva Rail London, said: "We have now started a consultation process on proposals to reduce the number of ticket offices on the rest of the London Overground.

"All views will be carefully considered, and all proposed changes will be safety validated before any final decision is made. All stations will remain staffed while trains are running, with trained staff available to help passengers who require assistance.”

A BEST-SELLING author will be giving a talk to Kennington schoolchildren alongside comedian Russell Brand.

On September 28, Professor Yuval Noah Harari – who is best known for his best-seller Homo Sapiens – will be speaking at the Lilian Baylis Technology school in a talk organised

by Penguin.

The event, the first in the ‘Penguin Talks’ series aimed at the next generation of readers, will see 300 schoolkids from the local area come to see Harari talk about the ideas in his latest book 21 Lessons for the 21st century.

Ten-year-old hands petition into Downing Street for refugees

A BERMONDSEY boy, aged just ten, went to Downing Street to hand in a petition supporting refugees and migrants.

Abel was part of a delegation to hand in a petition signed by Catholics across England and Wales as part of the Share the Journey campaign, launched by Pope Francis last year.

The campaign calls for world leaders to take action to protect refugees and migrants at UN summit talks this month.

Abel said: “It makes me feel good about myself that I am helping children like me around the world. I felt like going to Downing Street was a big opportunity for me.

“I will be proud of myself when I see this in the future.

"I hope the UK government will listen to us and do more to protect refugees and migrants.”

The ten-year-old's proud mum, Belay Nema, added: “I got a bit emotional watching him give interviews after his trip to Downing Street. We are very proud of him. He was a star!

“It is clear that each of us had at some point been newcomers to a county, city and community. As an immigrant myself, I was once a stranger in this county and kind people made me welcome.

She added: “I never had to face the situation that the current refugees face, neither did I need to migrate economically, but I understand the loneliness of separation from those you love.”

As part of the campaign, supporters including Abel were asked to walk a collective 24,900 miles – the distance around the world.

Head of campaigns for CAFOD – one of the groups backing the campaign – Daniel Hale added: “The enormous support from the Catholic community for the UK government to ask World leaders to develop a united, humane and dignified response to the refugee and migrant crisis, shows it is time for all to take action.

“It is important to remember that most people on the move are from poor countries, and most seek safety in nearby poor countries or within their own country’s borders.”

Magician and a rapper are winners of this year's Elephant's Got Talent

THE WINNERS of the first ever Elephant's Got Talent competition have been announced.

Magician Loic Dilane and singerrappers Copy and Paste - aka Kai Rogers and Zach Chappell - were crowned joint winners at the hotly anticipated competition finals on Thursday, September 6.

Their victory came after several months of auditions and three heats at Draper Hall, Mercato Metropolitano and The Artworks, before the final was held at Elephant Park, where the audience enjoyed guest performances from students at local performing arts school Superarts.

In total, nine acts took to the stage, but the judges were won over by the 'professionalism and uniqueness' of the winners.

Susan Hayes, principal at Superarts Academy of Performing Arts, who organised the event, said: "It's fantastic to see the variety of talents we have in the neighbourhood.

"Running Superarts Performing Arts Academy and the Superarts agency for young people who work in the West End, TV and Film, I’m always interested in seeing the wonderful talent we have in this area.

"To nurture those who are new to the business, as well as encourage those who have been in this industry for many years, is a privilege.

"As you saw this evening it’s the passion of all the finalists that shone through and I hope all of them continue to believe in themselves and follow their dreams.”

The judging panel included ballerina Pietra Mello Pittman, former Superarts student Sadie Nine, a singer, performer and BBC radio broadcaster, and Mike Smith, the joint creative director at Uplands TV. “Elephant Castle has a unique energy where talent can flourish. It’s been my pleasure to organise this event, with the assistance of a great team. Though this is the first Elephant's Got Talent, we hope it won’t be the last.

LEWISHAM SOUTHWARK College will separate into two colleges, six years after they merged, it was announced this week.

Staff were told on Monday of the separation by Joe Docherty, Chief Executive of Lewisham Southwark College’s parent company NCG, who have been running the institution since last year. The new principal roles are being advertised immediately and current staff have been told there are no planned redundancies.

A series of public consultation sessions are set to take place to give students and parents the opportunity to find out more and the re-branding of the colleges will happen next month.

It will see the college separate into two – Lewisham College and Southwark College – both remaining part of NCG. Mr Docherty said in his announcement: “This decision will allow the newly established colleges to develop curriculum programmes that better meet the needs of the communities they serve and to work more closely with key stakeholders, including crucially the

station would clearly improve connectivity to surrounding areas, and central London, the lack of development opportunities and negative impact on existing rail users currently outweigh the benefits to Camberwell.

"This would make any decision to proceed with this project on the current basis questionable in terms of the use of increasingly scarce public funds."

While the feasibility study was undertaken by Transport for London, the

final decision on whether to re-open the station would be taken by Network Rail.

The study has been slammed by campaigners, councillors and Helen Hayes MP, who called its methodology deeply flawed. Campaigners from Priority Action for Camberwell Transport (PACT) argue that the location of two busy hospitals in Camberwell - King's College and the Maudsley - mean that a rail station is needed.

Around 10,000 members of staff work at the sites, while King's College hospital is expected to experience growing outpatient numbers requiring access to the area.

Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, said: "It is very disappointing that the business case does not appear to have given any weight to the critical transport issues facing staff at Kings and the Maudsley.

"This is a serious flaw in the government’s methodology which means that the business case for Camberwell Station must be reconsidered."

Harriet Harman, MP for Camberwell and Peckham, added that she was "deeply disappointed" with the decision, which she said was needed to deal with "dangerous overcrowding" at Denmark

Hill and Nunhead stations.

Meanwhile, Cllr Johnson Situ, who holds the planning portfolio, said: "This part of London remains woefully underserved by the rail networks.

"Camberwell and its residents risk being left behind and reliant on the slower and sometimes less direct bus service."

The councillor added that he would be meeting with Network Rail to continue pushing for the station.

Campaigners have vowed to continue fighting for the station and say that the plans for the station are "delayed, not derailed."

He said: “This is welcome news for Southwark residents, who deserve a better and more focused further education offer than we have had in

recent years.

“The council has worked with local schools to ensure Southwark children receive a first class education, and we expect the same standard from our further education colleges.

“We look forward to working with the new Southwark College to help our residents reach their potential and have every opportunity to succeed in life.”

Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham said: “Further education opens up opportunities for so many Lewisham residents of all ages. This move will allow the newly-branded Lewisham College to tailor their curriculum to the

needs of our borough and we welcome this.”

Lewisham Southwark College was originally formed by a merger of Lewisham and Southwark Colleges in 2012, and it became part of NCG in 2017.

NCG’s Tony Lewin will remain Executive Lead as the separation takes place.

The company also operates five other colleges outside of London, Carlisle College, Kidderminster College, Newcastle College, Newcastle Sixth Form College and West Lancashire College.

Bermondsey GP given regulator's worst rating after report says it failed to obtain 'lawful' consent

A BERMONDSEY doctor's practice has been given the worst possible care rating by the regulators CQC, after it was found performing surgical procedures without 'lawful' consent.

Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice, on Old Jamaica Road, was slapped with the worst ‘Inadequate’ rating in all of the categories rated after an inspection in July.

Now it has been barred from carrying out any surgical procedures for three months (starting from 17 July 2018) and has been placed in special measures.

The practice did 'not have clear systems' to ensure that patients did not get infected from treatment or manage their stock of medicines properly.

Professor Ursula Gallagher, CQC Deputy Chief Inspector of GP Practices,

said: “I am disappointed that Dr Shabir Bhatti’s practice is now rated Inadequate overall and we are putting it in special measures. It was previously rated Good.

“We will continue to monitor the practice and will inspect again within six months.

“If insufficient improvements have been made we will take action in line with our enforcement procedures to begin the process of preventing the provider from operating the service.

“Special measures will give people who use the service the reassurance that the care they get should improve.”

Among the other failings from the GPs were poor governance and leadership which inspectors found was likely to increase risks when dealing with medical emergencies.

A BERMONDSEY nurse who used ‘voodoo’ rituals to traffic women from Nigeria into sex slavery has had her sentence increased from fourteen to eighteen years.

Josephine Iyamu, an NHS nurse who owned a £400,000 home in Bermondsey, was jailed in July for putting her five victims through humiliating ‘juju’ ceremonies while trafficking them to Germany to work as prostitutes.

Now her original sentence has been extended to eighteen years after judges at the Court of Appeal yesterday agreed that it was too lenient.

voodoo priest to intimidate vulnerable Nigerian women before forcing them into her sex ring.

She charged the women 38,000 Euros to arrange their travel across the Mediterranean before forcing them to pay off the debt through prostitution.

She subjected her victims to humiliating rituals including making them drink blood containing worms, eat chicken hearts and have their skin cut with razor blades.

One of the victims was forced to have an abortion when she was raped by traffickers – only for Iyamu to charge her £440 for the procedure.

The nurse, who also owned a mansion in Nigeria, was only caught after the German authorities tipped off the National Crime Agency when they identified one of her victims working in a brothel in Trier.

Iyamu was arrested by NCA officers after landing at Heathrow airport on a flight from Lagos on August 24, 2017.

She was found guilty of facilitating the travel of another person with a view to exploitation and perverting the course of justice during a tenweek trial at Birmingham Crown Court on July 4.

She is the first British national to be convicted under the Modern Slavery Act for offences committed overseas.

The foxes were responsible for the 'mutilations' found, but the majority are believed to have been killed by blunt force caused by being run over by cars.

In 2016, the South Norwood Animal Rescue League (SNARL) arranged for 25 post-mortem examinations on cats that had been found mutilated which threw up six suspicious cases.

Met Police officers began to investigate the mutilations – while over 400 additional reports of mutilated cats were made, leading to a suspected cat-killer on the loose.

Following an exhaustive three-year investigation, however no human

involvement was found – and where CCTV involvement was available, they showed foxes carrying away the bodies.

The pathologist who carried out the original post-mortem examinations on the cats which were deemed suspicious reconducted them in August 2018 and found puncture wounds consistent with scavenging wildlife.

Officers said such reported spates of catkillings are not uncommon and today met with SNARL and the RSPCA to conclude that there was no human involvement in the feline deaths.

All cases of cat killings reported as part of the Croydon cat killer are going to be recorded as not crimes.

Infamous 'Croydon cat killer' mystery solved but police’s foxes and cars conclusion disputed

POLICE HAVE said that the infamous ‘Croydon cat killer’ responsible for hundreds of reported cat mutilations was unlikely to be a human - with campaigners rejecting their conclusion.

Reports of cats found decapitated first started in November 2015 in Croydon and surrounding areas of South London before spreading further afield.

However after a thorough review of the evidence officers working alongside animal experts have said the killings are likely to be the result of scavenging by

“We understand the reason for this people trust the police to help them when they suspect others have done wrong, fear for their own safety or simply are facing situations that they are unable to handle themselves.

“We will always assist the public in an emergency, but I would urge people to report concerns relating to animal welfare in the first instance to the RSPCA. “The decision was made to allocate a large number of similar reports of mutilated cats to the officers who were

investigating the initial spate of such allegations. In particular, they were following up the six suspicious cases identified by the post-mortem examinations.

“While this increased the workload of those officers, it significantly reduced the resources that would have been required for different officers in different units to record and assess each allegation separately.

“It is this collating of reports that enabled officers to work with experts and reach the conclusion that no further police investigations.”

Campaign groups have said they find the decision to close the case disappointing.

Bring Royal Mail back into public ownership, service over profit

HEN THE now Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable pushed through the privatisation of the Royal Mail under the Tory-Lib Dem government I warned that putting profit before service would be a disaster.

At the end of August I highlighted in my Southwark News column the disgraceful impending closure of the SE22 sorting office on Silvester Road in East Dulwich, with the sorting of mail and collections of missed post to be moved to Highshore Road in Peckham.

This means that Royal Mail staff now need to travel from the middle of Peckham almost as far as the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill.

HE NORTH of Southwark lies within the central London congestion charging zone.

It was introduced by Ken Livingstone in 2013 and led to an impressive drop of 80,000 cars entering the zone daily.

This equated to a nearly 40% reduction, despite a growing population.

There was also a drop of 16% in carbon emissions. However, Livingstone inexplicably exempted cabs from the charge.

The number of black-cab daily entries into the congestion zone remained unchanged at a very high 60,000 and recently with the explosion of Uber, there are an additional 80,000 cabs clogging up the congestion zone.

Transport for London estimate that blackcabs emit up to 20% of transport pollution in central London. It reported last month that cabs are more likely to cause serious injuries to people cycling than even HGVs! Cabs (black+mini) now make up to 60% of all cars in the congestion zone and take up about 40% of road-space, but only carry a tiny 1.7% of all trips in London.

Still a hot favourite after 40 years

A TOWER Bridge Road institution celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year – the Tower Tandoori, writes Josh Salisbury...

The restaurant was one of the first Indian curry houses in south east London - and it’s still going strong four decades later.

Suhel, who has followed in the footsteps of his dad and grandad to run the business, said: “In the beginning it was probably the only Indian restaurant in the whole of south east London.

“It was definitely the only tandoori restaurant.

The restaurant started trading as the Tower Tandoori, although previous businesses known as the Dreamland Tandoori and Star of India had been in the premises before.

He said: “My granddad took over the business in 1977 and made it the Tower Tandoori in 1978.

“There’s probably been an Indian restaurant there for the last sixty years.”

Although there has been a wellloved Indian on the spot for over a half a century, the business has had to battle the difficulties facing the industry.

Suhel, 31, said: “Indian restaurants have been closing down like flies.

“They’ve been going very quickly because people who can cook have been retiring, young people haven’t been joining – there’s an industry wide problem.

“It isn’t as easy as it used to be.”

What then, is the secret to the businesses’ longevity, apart from its very tasty curries?

Suhel attributes it to “always innovating and trying something different”, as well as the loyalty of its staff in the family-owned business.

The restaurant has embraced tech, while having a strong family focus helps with making sure there’s always someone around to keep things ticking over.

He said: “We’ve had a lot of family members who given a lot in the business, a lot of people had given their sweat blood and tears.”

The “young blood” in the business helped keep things fresh, Suhel says – while loyal staff become almost like a second family. (One waiter has been there for ten years, a rarity in the industry.)

The Tower Tandoori is fiercely local and proud, too. The business won’t open until the pavement outside has been swept clean, a tradition Suhel said he has inherited from his father and grandfather.

Suhel said: “I went to Grange Primary around the corner, I went to Guy’s hospital, and everything I’ve ever done has been in this area.

“If I don’t come to the restaurant even on my day off I feel uncomfortable, it’s just a thing.

“I feel like I have to breathe the air on Tower Bridge Road, it’s such a clichéd thing to say but I just feel not right otherwise.”

Being rooted in the area for such a long time has given the Tower Tandoori a vantage point to watch how much Bermondsey has changed – even down to the people popping in for a curry.

Director Suhel, who took over the

business ten years ago, explained: “The customer has changed. We were very old Bermondsey to start off.

“When I started in the business we used to get customers who came after the pub and it was a very different type of customer than what we’ve got today.

“People used to come to the restaurant just to say hello to Dad or me and my brother. Yes, they came for

the food but they saw us as family.

“The whole demographic of the area has changed. The Old Bermondsey has moved to Bexley and Sidcup and Bromley, whereas the yuppie crowd who can afford to buy a two bed flat for £500,000 has moved in.”

He added: “We’ve had to adapt to a new clientele – we’ve gone from being a neighbourhood restaurant to a tourist-friendly restaurant.”

In the early days, dad Shab was reluctant to have the big open-front windows which now characterise the restaurant because he thought they would be smashed too quickly.

Now they are more likely to see coach loads of tourists passing by their windows. Menus are printed in several languages to adapt to their customers from all over the world.

Despite the forty years of serving

tandoori to Old Bermondsey and New Bermondsey alike, the business has no plans to stop any time soon.

“This is stuff my ancestors, my dad and grandfather really worked hard on. It’s not about money it’s a sentimental thing, it’s about legacy,” said Suhel.

“I’d like to see the business go onto another forty years, maybe even a hundred years.”

Our New Bede Centre is being built on the Abbeyfield Estate, as part of the redevelopment of Maydew House. Bede’s youth clubs, our services for adults who have a learning disability, and our practical and emotional help for those experiencing domestic abuse are all running as normal whilst we prepare for our move to the New Bede Centre in 2021/22.

We are looking for enthusiastic, flexible staff with previous experience of supporting people who have a learning disability to fulfil their potential. You will work with individuals and small groups in a range of community and centre based activities such as supported volunteering, leisure, arts, cooking, gardening, sport, social opportunities and employment. Some clients have complex needs.

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable a crane operation to be carried out, it made an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in Snowsfields, between Weston Street and Kipling Street.

The Hamlet given tough FA Cup draw

DULWICH HAMLET have been drawn away to National League South rivals Eastbourne Borough in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Hamlet defeated Tonbridge Angels 31 last Saturday to move to within two rounds of the first round proper, while Eastbourne beat Brantham Athletic 10.

Gavin Rose’s Hamlet were 2-0 up against seventh-tier Tonbridge at halftime thanks to goals from Nathan Ferguson and Nathan Green before

Sonny Miles halved the deficit eight minutes after the break.

Dipo Akinyemi scored three minutes from time to smooth Hamlet’s progression.

The next round will be on Saturday, October 6.

Hamlet are back in National League South action this Saturday. They host Chippenham Town at Imperial Fields in Mitcham. Kick-off is 3pm.

Meanwhile, the club has been handed a potentially significant financial boost after it was announced that they had arranged a friendly against Crystal Palace. Eagles boss Roy Hodgson has promised to take a strong squad to Imperial Fields on October 11.

Our Dulwich Hamlet reporter Ben Henderson looks at an important if unglamorous income stream for the club – and the upgrade from Shed to Mega-Container.

LAST THURSDAY, September 20, the Dulwich Hamlet stadium shop, known ironically as the “MegaContainer”, was moved from its traditional home at Champion Hill to Dulwich’s current home at Tooting’s Imperial Fields in Mitcham.

The Mega-Container, as the name suggests, is a large shipping container converted into a shop. It sells the finest football merchandise – from shirts and scarves to tea cups and vintage match programmes dating back to the ‘50s. It’s got the lot.

The shop is run by volunteers from the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters Trust: a notfor-profit organisation independent of the club. The Trust aims to secure a successful and sustainable future for the Hamlet by increasing supporter involvement in its running.

The Container has proved an increasingly important cash cow over time. Its turnover has rocketed in recent years from just a few thousand pounds to roughly £70,000 last season. One-third of the Container’s proceeds goes directly to the club, with the remaining two-thirds going to the Trust, which invests it in club-related activities. So, the Container plays a significant role in the success of the club, both on and off the pitch.

The Mega-Container was preceded at Champion Hill by the “Mega-Shed”, which was set up by DHST board member, Guy Grater. However, Hamlet attendances have surged in recent times, and so demand for merchandise was causing the shed to burst at its hinges.

So, Al Crane (Chairman of the Supporters’ Trust until he stepped aside this August) replaced the Mega-Shed with the Mega-Container in 2016. It was funded by the Trust, which was assisted

by Champion Hill’s then owners -

Hadley Property Group, and the football club. They both generously agreed to fund half the cost of the container and its decoration by foregoing their share of profits from sales of merchandise until these costs were recovered (and in the process providing an interesting comparison with Champion Hill’s current landlords).

The Container’s transformation from mouldy ship container to gaudy club shop was facilitated through the efforts of local volunteers. Materials such as timber and paint were donated and the expertise of local Andy Greig (or the Honor Oak Handyman as he is professionally known) got the electrics up and running.

In typical Dulwich fashion, the sale of some of the original merchandise went to local playground and charity, Dog Kennel Hill Adventure Playground, to pay for the installation of a new swing.

The Container’s latest move was brought about courtesy, not of Al Crane, but rather Al’s crane – Sussex Transport provided a crane and driver named Alex.

Furthermore, Tooting manager, Ashley Bosah, and coach, Jordan Wilson, were on hand to help out on arrival at the ground.

The community ethos intertwined in

its history means that the MegaContainer has become a symbol of Dulwich Hamlet. Therefore, while its move to Imperial Fields will by warmly met by those eager for Dulwich merchandise, it will be a bittersweet moment given what it portends.

Duncan Chapman, Co-Chairman of the Supporters’ Trust, illustrated this point: “The Trust is pleased to have The Mega-Container back for match-days as it allows us to offer fans a wider range of merchandise. It is a huge shame, however, that we have been forced to move it away from its home at Champion Hill.

“We are grateful to everyone at Tooting & Mitcham for helping with the move. We would also like to thank Sussex Transport and their driver, Alex, who couldn’t have been more helpful.

“We continue to work hard with the Hamlet directors, match-day committee and fans in seeking a return of the team to Champion Hill.”

However, it seems unlikely that Dulwich would go through the hassle of moving the container if a return to Champion Hill looked a realistic possibility in the short term.

Growing Docks academy develops popular approach AN INDEPENDENT Docklands football academy is enabling young players to play without fear or pressure – and giving them the platform to get noticed by professional clubs.

Ballers Football Academy on Salter Road was set up by Jamie Mehmet and now employs a roster of coaches, including former Millwall striker Gary Alexander and ex-Charlton player Charlie MacDonald.

Instead of entering their players into leagues, where the focus is on results, Ballers encourage development of skills and emphasise creativity and enjoyment of the game.

It has proved a hugely popular approach.

“We’ve been running for just over four years now, we started with just one age group and now we coach over 300 players each week between the ages of 5-18,” Jamie explained to the News.

“I had been working with grassroots players for around ten years and my coaching was going really well, so

much so I won a few awards. I was only coaching one particular age group and that age group was developing really well, but I wanted to help develop all age groups.

“Over the years we’ve managed to attract players of all ages and we’ve successfully developed lots of talented young players that have moved on to professional football clubs.

“But at the same time we focus on football for all, so we’ve also helped many players join grassroots football clubs, which is brilliant. They get professional coaching and get to play with their friends on the weekends.

“Because the academy has grown and because we’re always looking at improving what we offer, we now have a coaching team that provides a great footballing education to these young children. Our team is made up of some great coaches with the likes of Charlie Pearce and Owen March, as well as professional footballers Charlie MacDonald and Gary Alexander, which is brilliant for the youngsters as they

have been there and done it and that helps to inspire the players.

“We also have our very own qualified sports physiotherapist, Husyein Turgot, who is on hand to help our players with any injuries and rehabilitation programmes. We’re providing a safe and fun environment for local children to play football and improve on all aspects of the game.”

Jamie also explained the approach to games. “We don’t enter teams into leagues at the moment as we want them to play with freedom without any pressures. The fixtures we do play are against other similar independent academies, professional football clubs and grassroots teams.

“This gives our players the opportunity to test themselves against opponents of all levels without worrying about winning or losing. We hope through the no-fear and nopressure emphasis they’ll relax, be creative, take chances and most importantly of all enjoy the game.

“We’ve been very successful with

players either moving on to or trialling with professional clubs and this has helped our academy grow too, as we’re seen as a place for children to develop with a top coaching team.”

Jamie and Gary Alexander coached the academy’s under-12 side to a 13-1 win at Beckenham’s Real FC last weekend.

Freddie Doublet got on the end of a great through-ball to put Ballers 1-0 up.

Stanley Sammland made it two with a left-footed half-volley from a corner, before the same player added his second from Doublet’s assist.

The roles were reversed moments later with Sammland finding Doublet for the side’s fourth, and the latter completed his hat-trick when he finished off a superb passing move.

It appeared to be a battle of two goalscorers as Sammland completed his treble after good work from Harry Wainwright and Milo Eaves.

Ballers’ seventh came from left-back Stanley Mehmet who fired in from distance. Doublet then added two more

to take his tally to five, while Sammland grabbed his fourth.

Mehmet’s second made it 11-0, before Eaves and Nahshon Bedaeu-Francis completed the baker’s dozen. Real FC pulled one back late on after the Ballers failed to deal with a free-kick.

Jamie said: “The players can takes lots of positives from the game including their passing patterns and excellent finishing, but they do realise they have to stay disciplined until the final whistle.

“Credit to all the players involved, they all worked extremely hard for each other on and off the ball, and huge credit to the Real FC players who never gave up and worked hard until the final whistle.”

Next up for the under-12s is a trip to Sparrows Lane, the home of Charlton Athletic, for a friendly fixture.

Jamie added: “This game will be much tougher, we just want the team to go there with no fear and play football.

Win, lose or draw, it’s a great opportunity to showcase themselves against a professional academy.”

MILLWALL LIONESSES boss Chris Phillips is targeting a first win after the international break against Leicester City following their first point of the season when they drew against Crystal Palace Ladies last Sunday.

Millwall started the game on the front foot in the opening ten minutes with Gabby Ravenscroft testing Palace keeper Megan Lynch on two occasions, the second a lob that rolled just wide.

Palace opened the scoring minutes later when former Lionesses striker Ashlee Hincks stroked the ball into the back of the net after she found herself unmarked at the back post.

But the hosts grabbed an equaliser in the second half through a brilliant goal from Ravenscroft – the ex-Arsenal striker who followed Phillips to Millwall – who pounced on Lynch’s loose clearance before beating a defender and firing into the top corner for her second of the season.

“I thought it was an improved performance. To be fair I thought for the first time we started the game well, which is something we have been working on and I think we did that,” Phillips said after the game.

“What is frustrating is the goal we conceded because I thought we were on top at that time, if I’m perfectly honest.

They played a long ball, which should have been dealt with.

“But I’m happy all round. I thought Gabby’s goal was fantastic. I’ve seen Gabby do that hundreds in matches and in training so it wasn’t a surprise to me that it ended up in the top corner.

“Now we have our first point on the board, we have a couple of weeks off and we will work hard and recover and we’ll be looking to go for our first win in our next game.

“It’s going to be tough because we have a few going away with England, four of them will be away with the national team so we will have to pray they come back healthy. The ones who will be in, I know a few sessions [have been] lined up that they can look forward to.”

After a three-week break, the Lionesses will face sixth-place Leicester City – who lost 4-3 to Lewes last weekend – on

Phillips added: “They’re another physical side, they had a tough game with their result. We’ll be prepared for them.

“We know they have a couple of dangerous players and we’ll analyse the footage and be ready for them.

Millwall Lionesses have started all five of their competitive fixtures this season with a different formation and a different starting XI as Phillips explained that he is still searching for that winning formula.

“I’m still finding out what our best formation is for what suits the group that I have and we will continue to work until I feel that we are there.”

THE MENACE advanced to the next round of the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield after a confident performance last weekend against a spirited Margate Sports that belied their position in the league.

Peckham went ahead in the first half through Howard Miller but on the stroke of half-time Margate made it 1-1 when Ian Pullman found himself unmarked to finish.

Just after Pullman went close to giving his side the lead in the 55th

minute with an audacious overhead kick, Peckham responded by going in front again when Ali Amisu curled home his eighth goal in eight games.

Pullman went close to another equaliser but just missed getting a touch to Aaron Quain’s cross.

The visitors pressed to get back on level terms, but in injury-time the Menace made the game safe when Yaya Barry sprung the offside trap before advancing on goal to neatly chip over goalkeeper Wesley Miller.

The next game at the Menace Arena (37 Dulwich Common, SE21 7EU) is against the league leaders Bromleains on Saturday, September 29 kicking off at 2.45pm.

Skeete moves aside to give Garton title shot

JOHNNY GARTON has thanked Bradley Skeete for vacating his British belt to give him a crack against Gary Corcoran next month.

Peckham’s Garton and Skeete train out of the iBox Gym in Bromley under Alan Smith and Eddie Lamm, and Skeete was set for his fourth defence of his Lonsdale belt.

Garton, 31, won the vacant IBF European welterweight title last December, which took his record to 22-11 including nine KOs. Garton’s only defeat was in 2014, against Sam Eggington in a Prizefighter tournament.

Welterweight Garton said: “Some of you may already know, however I am pleased and very excited to finally announce that I will be fighting on October 20 at the Brentwood Centre against Gary Corcoran.

“I would like to say a special thanks to my good friend Bradley Skeete for vacating the Lonsdale belt and giving me this huge opportunity.”

Tooting’s Skeete (27-2) added: “I feel it is now time to move on from domestic level.

“My decision was made easier knowing my good friend and iBox Gym stablemate Johnny Garton was next in line to fight for the title.

“I’d like to wish him all the best. No one deserves it more than him.”

Painful Lessa for Rye

PECKHAM RYE kept their unbeaten league run this season intact after an entertaining 3-3 league draw at home to Lessa FXI last Sunday.

Rye took the lead twice before surrendering their advantage late on.

Peckham were back to full strength with the return of Lee Turner, Charlie Eldridge, Dean Grice and Craig Parsons.

The Rye started on the front foot creating numerous chances with Grice hitting the post from a Danny Gibson corner. After another home attack broke down, Lessa countered and a deflected shot gave stopper Mick Holman no chance.

Peckham brought on Parsons at halftime and he immediately set up Duke Binitie to slot in the equaliser.

It was soon 2-1 when Turner and Gibson combined before an intelligent dummy from Eldridge allowed Keenan Rochester the space to calmly finish from the edge of the box.

Finally in front, Peckham took their foot of pedal, happy to sit deep and absorb pressure.

But they allowed Lessa too much space, and they made it 2-2 with an effort from outside the box.

The Rye had to up the tempo once again and good pressing in midfield led to Turner racing through to take the ball around the keeper and finish from a tight angle.

But, with just five minutes left, Peckham failed to clear a corner and Lessa punished them with another strike from outside the area into the bottom corner.

The hosts had a chance to snatch a dramatic winner when Jules went through but this time the Lessa keeper came to his side’s rescue.

Rye boss Alvin Spencer said: “We’re disappointed with the result as it felt like two points dropped, but we learn and move on to next week.”

Millwall sign key partnership agreement with FC Puerto Del Carmen

ILLWALL FC and Millwall Community Trust have signed a ground-breaking partnership agreement with FC Puerto Del Carmen of Lanzarote.

Following the signing of the agreement, FC Puerto Del Carmen brought a squad of 25 players and 7 coaching staff over to the UK to for four fixtures, playing Millwall Community Trust’s Post 16 Academy side twice, then

Millwall FC’s Under 16s side, as well as a fixture against non-league Welling United’s under 17 side.

Alongside their fixtures, the group from Lanzarote enjoyed a stadium tour at The Den and the chance to go out on the pitch before watching Millwall draw 1-1 with Leeds United.

As part of the agreement, FC Puerto Del Carmen will send select squads, including a girls’ team, of the island’s most promising players, to train and

play against teams from both Millwall Community Trust and Millwall FC’s academy. Those players with FC Puerto Del Carmen see as showing exceptional promise, will have the opportunity to come over to the UK for trials with Millwall’s academy.

Millwall Community Trust, alongside the club, will send coaches to Lanzarote to run soccer camps, as well as providing scouting expertise and coaching advice to the

staff at FC Puerto Del Carmen.

Over Easter, FC Puerto Del Carmen will host an international tournament called “The Puerto Del Carmen Lions Cup” with teams from Millwall and Millwall Community Trust’s academies going over to Lanzarote to take part.

As well as the relationships between the academies, Millwall FC will have the opportunity to travel to Lanzarote and use FC Puerto Del Carmen as a possible

base for a winter training camp.

Speedy defender’s strike against Sheffield United last season arguably turned Lions season around

MAHLON ROMEO was able to put the Championship defeat to West Brom last weekend in perspective – and hopes the presence of Sheffield United at The Den this Saturday can spark a revival.

The Lions have defeated the Blades the three times they’ve met in Bermondsey under Neil Harris, and Chris Wilder’s side seem to bring out the best in Romeo.

He was being kept out of the team by Conor McLaughlin last season before the Northern Ireland defender picked up a suspension giving Romeo his chance on December 2.

And he grabbed it, putting Millwall 2-1 up in the 66th minute before they ran out 3-1 winners to end a six-game winless run. It was a pivotal moment in the season, the game was in the balance, and after the victory the Lions lost just four more times in the league.

In contrast, Millwall have lost five of their last six Championship games, and won only one league game all season, a 2-1 victory over Derby County a month ago.

But there were signs last weekend that Millwall are not far off turning their form around.

“Like the manager said, it’s tough the way things are going right now but unfortunately that’s the way it is sometimes. We played well and created chances,” Romeo said.

“The way we played in the first half you

wouldn’t have thought that they had been a Premier League side for a long time with still a lot of the same players. We did ourselves justice and we can take the positives from it.

“I enjoyed playing in a really good stadium and the support we got was fantastic. We could hear them the whole game. They’re like that every week, to be fair, it’s great credit to them.”

Although Romeo has scored just two league goals in 83 league games for Millwall, he has shown that when he has a shooting chance he can be clinical.

Last season’s strike against United came after he was moved into a wing-back position, giving him more freedom to get forward. He showed an attacker’s instincts to spot the space in front of him before he gathered Lee Gregory’s through-ball to finish past Jamal Blackman.

But he insisted he didn’t want people “to get any ideas” that he could perform further up the pitch and be a regular goal threat, having spent his entire professional career as a defender.

“Sheffield is always a good fixture and we’re looking forward to being back at The Den,” he said. “I remember my goal well. I was in a position where I was screaming for the ball. I thought ‘he has to pass it’ and luckily he saw the run I made and it was a perfect pass.

“I think most people played in different positions when they were younger, I dabbled with the right of midfield and as a striker at times when I was really young.

I don’t want anyone to get any ideas, though I’m sure if we [defenders] joined in with shooting practice in training we’d give the strikers a good run for their money.”

With Lions boss Harris admitting he still hasn’t settled on his best starting XI, Romeo is currently the player in possession of the right-back shirt.

Romeo, 23, has been at fault for goals conceded against Middlesbrough and Swansea at The Den this season, but he stressed the solution is to learn from errors and listen to the boss.

“The manager has asked us to keep standards high, that’s what we’ve got to be doing,” he said. “If everyone, including me, can keep their standards high, then we’ll start doing well.

“What you do is look back and try to learn from mistakes. We’ll all be up for this weekend and will be excited to play at The Den in front of those fans. I’m sure it

will be a big crowd.

“What I think we all understand here is that if we do put a few results together it will give us confidence and we will get up that table.

“The spirit is still high here. When we get going we’re confident we’ll go on a run. We’ve shown we are capable of that the last couple of years.”

Leonard. Livermore appeared to swing a punch at Leonard when the two came together, and though it was right under the nose of referee Tim Robinson he didn’t punish the England midfielder.

West Brom had been slow in their build-up before the break and they gave Millwall space. Jed Wallace skied over a left-footed effort before Steve Morison volleyed Jiri Skalak’s cross towards the bottom corner but Sam Johnstone got down to save.

Millwall’s best chance came when Johnstone’s mistake on the ball gave Wallace a shot from way out on the right touchline. The winger’s effort was going in, but Craig Dawson got back to

clear off the line.

West Brom had more gears to move through and they played with more pace and directness in the second half, while Millwall struggled to create anything of note.

Harris had made four changes from the side that lost 2-0 at QPR, and Byron Webster, eight days short of a year after his last league start, could be satisfied with his comeback.

Skalak, too, showed his quality with crosses, but Tom Bradshaw has yet to have a sniff of goal in his early Lions career. It’s been a difficult time to come in.

Kieran Gibbs found himself in the box to drive home low into the far bottom corner It was a fifth defeat in six league games for the Lions, though this 2-0 was an improvement on the Loftus Road performance.

FOR ALL that this was a better Millwall performance away from home, there was still the feeling that West Brom didn’t have to be at full tilt to win it.

That’s not a harsh criticism of the Lions, more an indication of the quality that Darren Moore’s side possess.

The Baggies have a pair of £50,000-aweek strikers in Dwight Gayle and Jay

Rodriguez, as well as bags of Premier League experience.

It was a fifth win in a row at The Hawthorns for them and Moore has benefitted from being able to keep the majority of the squad together after relegation.

Neil Harris’ side were in the game until the 68th minute when Gayle fortuitously gave the home side the lead, the ball dropping to his feet after it had clipped the crossbar following Ben Amos’ excellent save from Ahmed Hegazi’s header.

That typified Millwall’s misfortune at the moment, as did a first-half incident involving Jake Livermore and Ryan

IT WAS a haymaker that would have been more appropriate for Wembley later on last Saturday night.

Millwall players can dish it out, but they have shown they can take it too, and won’t go whining about it.

At The Hawthorns last weekend, Ryan Leonard appeared to be on the receiving end of a punch from England international Jake Livermore, right in front of referee Tim Robinson.

Leonard would have been wellversed in what was expected of him before he played his first game for Millwall, and he has shown he’s not afraid to get stuck in.

But in that old-fashioned hard-man style more associated with muddy pitches in the 1980s, Leonard not only got up and got on with it but then told Robinson that there was no need to take any action against Livermore.

In the short term maybe some fans would feel that the Lions are in need of a break in a period when most things seem to be going against their side.

And a red card for Livermore would have been a boost.

But taking a more long-distance view, it’s more encouraging that Millwall have signed someone who represents

that no-nonsense approach that characterised some of their mostcherished players.

“To be fair, I caught him with a bit of a tackle beforehand,” Leonard told the News this week. “That’s what I said to the referee. I told him, ‘don’t do anything’.

“I apologised for catching him with a tackle and he kind of rag-dolled me to the ground with a bit of a headlock.

“If he was going to do anything it was going to be a yellow card for both players, but he chose the option to not go for a harsher punishment.

“It wasn’t that kind of game anyway, it wasn’t nasty. It does get heated and things happen, but I’ve got no complaints. They beat us fair and square.

“I knew it was going to take me a couple of games to get up to speed and I’ve been pleasantly surprised with how I’ve felt. I thought I’d need longer to get going but I’ve hit the ground running.

“I’d say I’m around 90 per cent match fit. I know where I need to go to fitness-wise. I was cup-tied for this week so can focus on being tip-top and 100 per cent come the weekend.

“The first 45 or 60 minutes last weekend we played really well.

Without the ball we were very organised and hard to break down, and with the ball we created a few chances.

“The goal was a bit of a killer and I don’t think they deserved to score, especially not in the way they did with Ben [Amos] making the save and then it came off the crossbar and landed at [Dwight Gayle’s] foot one yard out.

“It wasn’t what we needed, but when it’s not going for you you can’t feel sorry for yourself, you have to keep going.

“The game opened up after that and we had to go for it a little bit more, but they got the second goal. We have to keep going and keep working hard. It’ll turn, without a doubt, because we’ve got hard-working and honest lads. It’s the same with the manager.”

This Saturday, Leonard will face the club he left to join Millwall. The Lions courted him in 2017 before he joined Sheffield United last January, a move that was too good to turn down.

After losing their opening two league games of the season, Chris Wilder’s side have been defeated just once in their last seven, winning five, and they are currently fourth in the Championship.

“It’s a massive football club and it was a case of me wanting to go there and get myself games,” Leonard continued.

“It didn’t happen, I didn’t get as many minutes as I would have liked. I tried my hardest and did my best on the training pitch but it just wasn’t meant

to be.

“It was disappointing but it has given me this opportunity and I’m thankful that I’m here.

“From what I’ve seen so far it’s very similar in terms of the dressing rooms.

They’re real tight-knit groups of players. Since I’ve come here the team spirit has been brilliant so far. It was similar at Sheffield United.

“I think both managers are the same in the sense that they’ve tried to bring in players that have not had the opportunities elsewhere and try to improve them. They’ve managed to do that.

“They didn’t start off great before picking up recently, but I don’t think anyone is going to fancy coming to The Den. It’s not a stadium where a lot of players fancy coming to and that can be to our advantage.

“It was against Leeds, and we deserved to win that game. We didn’t but if we can put in the same kind of effort we put into the Leeds game I’m sure we’ll get a result.

“At Championship level I don’t think many teams have real weaknesses.

People are playing at this level for a reason, managers are in this division for a reason. We’ll have meetings with the gaffer and coaching staff and focus on where we can hurt Sheffield United.

They’ll be doing the same. It’s about who can create those chances and then take them.”

Leonard has yet to taste victory in his three games since joining the club, but he insists there are no problems with the spirit in the squad despite five defeats in six league games.

Leonard made his Lions debut in front of 17,195 at The Den in that game against Leeds last Saturday week, and it made a deep impression on him.

“When I could hear myself think I enjoyed it, but trying to shout to your team-mates wasn’t the easiest,” he joked. “Anyone who was more than five yards away you couldn’t hear them, but that’s the kind of atmosphere you want to play in. To be in front of that crowd, on my debut, is one I’ll remember. It’s one of my favourite debuts I’ve ever had and we were a minute shy of a win.

“The performance is something we can build on, as well as last Saturday’s, and if we can take the best from them I think we’ll be fine this year.

“No doubt about it there is still a sense of positivity about the place. It’s a tough run of games but there aren’t going to be any less difficult ones.

There are no games where you think it’s an easy one.

“We’ve got great spirit and the togetherness is brilliant. We’re not going to feel sorry for ourselves, we just have to work harder and harder each week and we need to get the luck that we’re not having onto our side and we’ll start picking up more points.”

AT LEAST a striker scored, and Millwall are now out of the EFL Cup and can concentrate fully on getting out of the woods over the course of the next few months in the Championship.

Not exactly a stirring rallying cry, and you would hope the Millwall manager and squad would do a better job of rousing themselves before the visit of Sheffield United to The Den on Saturday.

It didn’t help that Fulham won with a team that in the end included a player who, according to Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic, had taken exams earlier that day in school.

Harvey Elliott became Fulham’s youngest player in their history in the 81st minute on Tuesday night. At fifteen years and 174 days, he was a day over three weeks old when Steve Morison scored his first goal in professional football in April 2003.

Elliott got the train home and was back

in school on Wednesday morning.

Fulham could use this fixture as a platform on which to show their richly productive talent line is running smoothly. Matt O’Riley came on four minutes after Elliott, though the seventeen-year-old is a veteran of this competition having made his senior debut against Wycombe in August 2017.

The Cottagers had already dominated the game thanks in a large part to 20year-old Luca de la Torre, who scored once and set up the two other goals as Fulham looked a class – pardon the pun – above their opponents.

Fulham also had Steven Sessegnon in their side, the eighteen-year-old twin brother of the so-far more heralded Ryan, who was rested.

That’s all of little relevance to Lions fans, but it does throw into focus the relative lack of breakthrough talent at their own club in recent years.

It is seven years since the senior debut of Aiden O’Brien, the last player to come through the youth ranks to be a regular who is still currently at the club.

He made is bow in this competition in

September 2011 and is one of Millwall’s academy success stories.

Fred Onyedinma made his Lions debut almost five years ago, Ben Thompson four years ago and Sid Nelson a few months later, but that trio are out on loan and it remains to be seen if they have long-term Millwall futures.

It’s a bit of a bleak picture. On Tuesday night, Lewis White – who turned nineteen last May – was on the bench for the first time in a first-team Millwall match-day squad, and probably looked on with a pang of enviousness at the young Cottagers. He will surely get his chance and it’s about time that Lions fans felt the buzz of a young player, one of their own, stepping up and making an impact in the first team.

It could be a limiting factor for certain young players at the club that the system and style of play aren’t compatible with their own talents. Ebere Eze was cut loose in the summer of 2016 as it was felt he lacked the required discipline to play in a 4-4-2 structure that intends time spent without the ball and the taking up of deeper field positions as the opposition tries to find a way to break

you down. Eze has found a home at QPR and while there is no guarantee of future success based on the shoots of his progress so far, he has grasped his opportunity to flourish.

De la Torre is a slight player but with a beautiful touch and instinct for where the space is and how to find team-mates in space. Elliott, in his brief time on the pitch, is also obviously technically endowed, and that’s also clearly an area of emphasis in Fulham players under Jokanovic.

Though it was virtually their secondstring side – Kevin McDonald the only survivor from the starting line-up from their 1-1 draw with Watford at the weekend, and even he was hooked at half-time in that game – the takeaway from the contest, apart from Elliott’s introduction to senior football, was how crisp and clean their first touches and passing were.

The visitors took just six minutes to go ahead when De la Torre spotted Joe Bryan sprinting into space in the box and played a perfect pass that invited a low finish into the far corner.

Mahlon Romeo for Jiri Skalak at halftime and switched to 3-5-2, but before the change in system could have much effect De la Torre made it 2-0 when he presented himself in the box for Floyd Ayite’s cross from the left to fire past Ben Amos.

Amos had already saved twice from De la Torre in the first half and they looked even more valuable when Millwall’s own Elliott, Tom, scored his first of the season, heading in Shane Ferguson’s corner in the 61st minute.

It was the first time in five games that a Millwall centre-forward had scored, since Lee Gregory in the last round against Plymouth, and only the third goal a Lions striker has scored this season.

But that light of hope flickered only briefly before, just seven minutes later, Cyrus Christie cut in from the right to fire a wicked left-footed shot beyond Amos into the far corner.

Then came the schoolkids to make most of the home fans feel just that bit older.

Millwall need a win on Saturday to put a spring back in their supporters’ step.

NEIL HARRIS has pointed to the example of Sean Dyche’s Burnley, as his side aims to turn their season around and end a six-game winless league run this weekend.

Harris’ friend and former Millwall team-mate Dyche told his players to “get back to what we’re about” before they defeated Bournemouth 4-0 last Saturday, their first league win of the season in their sixth game.

After nine league games, Millwall have made their worst start in four seasons under Harris, last weekend’s 20 loss at West Brom dropping them into the Championship’s bottom three.

Harris echoed Dyche’s comments about his own Lions side when he said “we have to do it the Millwall way” ahead of the clash with Sheffield United at The Den on Saturday.

In the corresponding fixture last season, Millwall won for the first time in seven league games to kick-start their campaign.

“I look at Burnley. They didn’t win in their first five league games and all of a sudden beat Bournemouth 4-0,” Harris said. “What did Dychey change? Nothing.

“We’re not used to being in situations like this. We’re not used to being on a losing run, so we have to

find a way to get out of that.

“But we have to do it in the Millwall way. There won’t be wholesale changes, we’re not in a transfer window, we can’t change personnel.

“I’ll say as a manager we’ve got to be better. That’s where we’re at as a group, that one per cent short. We’ve got to find that.

“In this game hard work changes luck. Hard work, a moment of magic and it completely flips itself on the head.”

Harris has been unable to settle on an established league XI so far, and has made fifteen changes to his starting sides this season compared to five at the same stage in 2017-18.

He could tinker with his line-up again on Saturday, but not at the cost of being disloyal to players.

He said: “We’re not winning games because we’re not hitting the standards that we’ve hit over a period of time.

That’s just individual form, it’s not a lack of effort or desire, of course it’s not.

“It’s just at the moment there are too many big players that aren’t at the best of their ability, and then we struggle to win games.

“We’ve got to get players back to their best or if they’re not then give other players opportunities.

“You have to balance that off with a bit of loyalty. These players are good players and they’ve done well for me.

We want to support them through a little sticky spell.”

White didn’t get on, instead watching as Fulham made fifteenyear-old Harvey Elliott the youngest player in their history, and they also brought on seventeen-year-old Matt O’Riley.

Lions boss Neil Harris said it was important to show that the “pathway” at Millwall to the first team is there for young players.

Harris has also said he has yet to settle on his preferred side this season, due to injuries as well as players being out of form.

Millwall lost 3-1 to Fulham to exit the EFL Cup, stretching their run without a win to five games ahead of the visit to The Den of Sheffield United this Saturday.

After Tuesday’s defeat, Harris was asked if fans could see White, 19, in action this season.

He said: “Possibly. We’ve got some of our good young players out on loan at the moment. We still want to show the pathway to the first team is there.

“If I’m still searching for the right formulas then the door is open for everybody. Sometimes if you’re good enough you’re old enough, Fulham showed that.

“I made a lot of changes to the team not to disrespect the competition and certainly not to disrespect the opponent. There was a chance for some to rest and others to stake their claim.”
