Piglet theft is shocking - let’s support our farm

T

he theft of eleven piglets from Surrey Docks Farm in Rotherhithe at the weekend is shocking.

The tiny Oxford Sandy Blacks are just two-weeks old and need round-the-clock feeding from their mothers - or they may not survive.

They were a big attraction for the farm and the staff have been left devastated.

Any help finding the piglets would be gratefully received, but in the meantime, as long term supporters of the community farm, we ask residents to show their support - pay a visit, have lunch at the cafe.

It’s at times like these we should show what community support really means.

Tunnel vision

N

ew restrictions have been brought in at Rotherhithe Tunnel after maintenance work at the weekend - but what was actually done to warn motorists?

Goods vehicles heavier than two tonnes or higher than two metres can no longer use it and are encouraged to cross the river elsewhere. The changes affected one family, whose child takes a special needs transport bus. One mum told us the change could add hours to her child’s daily journey. Cab drivers said they were also stopped from crossing, even though they should be allowed. With traffic in that area already rammed, the message from TfL needs to be made loud and clear.

Viewers of hit BBC drama Bodyguard make light of ‘Camberwell’ scenes

CAMBERWELL VIEWERS of the BBC’s hit drama Bodyguard have been left disappointed – because the scenes taking place in the area were obviously filmed elsewhere.

Eagle-eyed fans took to social media to point out that among the show’s unrealistic aspects are the south London geography.

Local author Jen Williams said: “Been catching up with Bodyguard.

“Fave moment so far was when they were driving through Camberwell, very fast, very dramatic, and Marty and I got really excited, because according to the map they were on our road and then all of a sudden, very clearly not Camberwell at all.”

A local viewer named only as Sophie added: “Oh no, I've got ‘I know this area and they definitely

couldn't have driven there that quickly’ syndrome (i.e. they drove up Brixton Road and into Camberwell quicker than the speed of light).”

While resident Doug Strider pointed out the show’s lack of accurate signage.

He said: “There was a road sign to Hanwell and Ealing just off the alleged Camberwell New Road.

“Pretty sure that's not actually there.

Unless there'a a wormhole I don't know about.”

He added: “Must've driven through a cupboard to flippin NARNIA or something similar.”

Others thought the show’s protagonist, PS David Budd, being able to live in a big Camberwell house on a policeman’s salary was a little suspicious.

Fan Ellen Buddle said: “Big red flag about Dave in Bodyguard is he and his wife affording a nice house in Camberwell on a policeman and nurse’s salary with two kids. No way

is he legit.”

The BBC craze features Keeley Hawes as a fictional Home Secretary while hunky Richard Madden plays a police officer assigned to protect her from terrorist threats.

Its bold plot twists have left viewers hooked – despite the unrealistic geography.

The six-part series airs every Sunday at 9pm on BBC1, with an extended finale airing on September 23.

ELEVEN PIGLETS stolen from Surrey Docks Farm on Friday have still not been found – meanging they are unlikely to have survived.

The two-week-old piglets need round-the-clock feeding from their mothers or they will struggle to survive.

The Oxford Sandy Black piglets have been a popular attractions at the community farm on Rotherhithe Street.

Staff were devastated to find on Saturday morning that they had been snatched from the farm’s two sows Winnie and Marmalade in the dead of the night.

Farm manager Gemma Hooper, 33, last saw them when she locked up the farm at 7pm on Friday, 14 September, and they were gone when it reopened at 8am the following morning.

There were no signs of forced entry or a break-in, and nothing had been picked up on farm’s CCTV cameras.

Rotherhithe Street is quiet, but staff are eager for anyone who saw anything on Friday night to get in touch and are convinced that people must have heard eleven squealing piglets.

The fact that whoever snatched the piglets avoided the main routes in and out of the farm to evade capture on the CCTV and did not nab all of them – leaving another eleven piglets behind – has puzzled staff, who have said whoever carried out the raid even left the place tidy and shut things up before heading off.

According to Rachel Smith, 46, one of the weekend managers, attempts to canvass witnesses from the nearby flats have so far proven fruitless.

“We do have CCTV but unfortunately not on the pig pens, but the police are doing a full investigation.

“It’s difficult to speculate who they were, but we are just so desperate to find them. Unless, whoever stole them knows how to take care of them, without their mothers feeding them they will die.

“We are absolutely devastated here and have had loads of support on social media from the local community. ”

Concerns for unknown girl, 8, last seen on Asylum Road Police report that she was last seen wearing school uniform just before midnight on the road in Peckham

POLICE HAVE launched an appeal over welfare concerns for an unidentified girl, aged just eight, last seen late on Monday night.

The girl was spotted walking along Asylum Road in Peckham, shortly before midnight on Monday (September 17) and concerned members of the public called the police.

Officers attended but could not find the girl.

She is described as being young, darkskinned and wearing her hair in a ponytail.

The unknown child was also believed to be wearing her school uniform and had a rucksack on her back.

Witnesses also reported seeing two men walking down the same road shortly after the girl had, whom police are keen to speak to and eliminate from their enquiries. They are both described as Asian men.

However, police have received no reports of a missing child and there are currently no suggestions that a crime has occurred.

Detective Inspector Dean Purvis said: “I would like to stress that there is no evidence that a crime has occurred and

there have been no reports of any missing children.

“We need to identify the girl and make sure that she is ok.”

He added: “It is not clear if the two males seen in the area are known to the young girl. However, I need to trace them as they may hold vital information to help us.

“I would urge anyone with any information to contact us and be assured we will treat information with strictest confidence."

Appeal to identify man fighting for life after Camberwell assault Police have charged a man and woman with attempted murder

A MAN and woman have been charged with attempted murder after an assault in Camberwell.

Officers were called to Warner Road, SE5 at 05:41hrs on Saturday, 15 September following reports of an assault and found an unidentified man suffering head injuries.

Today police are appealing for the public's help in identifying the victim.

He is described as white, aged in his early to mid-40s, approximately 5ft 9ins tall, of slim build with short dark hair.

He has a mole on his right cheek near to his nostril.

The unidentified man spoke briefly in Spanish and was wearing a black Superdry hooded top, a black T-shirt, dark blue jeans and black Nike Air trainers.

Evacuated families put up in hotels after gas leak near Bermondsey estate

FORTY THREE families were evacuated from Wade House in Bermondsey on Monday night following a dangerous gas leak.

Engineers from SGN gas told residents of the Parkers Row flats on the Dickens Estate that they would have to be evacuated because of the leak from a pipe in Jamaica Road.

Those affected were not expected to be able to go home until today, Thursday.

In a note to residents on Tuesday, the company said: “At present the level of gas inside Wade House is still at a level which means we are unable to allow reoccupation.”

In an update that afternoon an SGN spokesperson, Katie Lobban, said: “We’re working in a difficult location and this is very complex engineering work.

“At the moment, it’s looking like it will take our engineers until Thursday at least to find the exact location of the leak and carry out the essential repairs.”

Louise Sharp, a resident at the block affected by the leak, said on Tuesday morning: “I got home at about six last night to find SGN - they said there was a report of a gas leak at eleven and they

had to evacuate the building.

“We went back at about quarter past eight and they said we would have to be evacuated, and they were sorting out hotels. But they were doing it for people with high priorities like illness or kids first.”

One resident, Mimi, also told the News: “We were put in a travel lodge at 11:35pm (having been evacuated at 6pm) and at 12:35am they told us we weren’t booked in and they moved us on to the next one down the road.

“Apparently we’ll be put in a hotel again tonight – no exact explanation of what happened with the gas, but apparently it was dangerous levels.”

Another added: “Hotel made only for one night, we were told to leave at midday. Some occupants have left the hotel already with nowhere to go.”

SGN confirmed it would be putting residents up in hotels again on Tuesday night while it dealt with the leak.

It said on that afternoon: “Our engineers are continuing with the emergency repairs to our gas main near to the A200 Jamaica Road.

“We’ve closed an eastbound lane in the road between its junctions for Dockhead and Abbey Street. Traffic can still travel in both directions. To ensure everyone’s safety, residents of Wade House flats in Parkers Row have

“We’re be working 24 hours to make sure we complete our repairs as soon as possible, and a further update will be posted here tomorrow.”

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing management and modernisation said: “I understand this is an incredibly

frustrating situation for the residents of Wade House and I want to reassure everyone that we are monitoring how gas supply company SGN progress, to ensure that residents can return to their homes as quickly as possible.”

She added: “Council officers are onsite alongside SGN to ensure that the matter is resolved as quickly and safely as possible so that residents do not need to spend longer than necessary away from home.

“Due to the complex nature of the

fault, SGN have advised that residents are likely to be in alternative accommodation for a second night.

“While I appreciate that residents will want to get back home, their safety is always our top priority.

“SGN is coordinating hotel accommodation for residents and council officers are in contact with them to ensure that all residents are provided with alternative housing while the necessary work is carried out.”

A DISABLED pensioner was left with three feet of water in his council flat after it flooded for the fourth time.

Michael Mohid, 68, who lives in McIntosh House on the Silwood Estate, had been dealing with the leak from a bathroom pipe for over a month before it dramatically caused water to gush out of his front door on August 11.

The former cleaning manager, who suffers from severe arthritis, slammed the council for not repairing the pipe – which has still not been repaired - and for allegedly leaving him exposed to asbestos.

Mr Mohid, who had to give up work in 2009 after undergoing a double hip transplant, said: “It was running out the front door. I was trying to do it with a bucket and mop but it was like sticking your finger in a dyke.

“It was coming back so quick I couldn’t keep up with it so I went round to my daughter’s.

“She said ‘stay the night dad don’t go back there because the place is rotten and damp and everything’.

“The council sent three lots of people down. The last one who said no that’s sewage and just walked off.

“They said we’re not allowed to touch it.

But they’re quite happy for me to sit in it.

So if they’re not allowed to touch it – the council, the landlords – who is?”

Mr Mohid returned to his flat the same night because he did not want to leave his pets, including his dog, Bailey, fourteen, in the flat on their own.

The flood turned out to be from a hot water pipe – and engineers eventually managed to shut off the flow to the leak.

However, the grandfather is angry that the pipe has still not been fixed two months from the leak’s start, and that he was left allegedly exposed to asbestos in

the pipe’s panelling for a week.

He told the News that a plumber recognised that the panelling surrounding the leaky pipe was asbestos but that it wasn’t removed until five days later.

He said: “The fact they left me exposed to the asbestos for five days – it’s probably not life threatening but there are procedures they have to follow.

“As waste disposal it’s got to be handled properly.”

He told the News he found the experience “very stressful” and that he had even fell over from light-headedness cutting his head in the process – as a result of stress. Due to the flooding, the 68-yearold had to throw away his hallway interiors and lift his possessions into his living room, despite having arthritis.

The flood was the fourth that has happened in his home since he moved there in 1986. On previous occasions, the flooding was caused by sewage which backed up in Mr Mohid’s bathroom. The incident left him with sewage staining over his house. On another occasion in 2009, parts of his garden subsided leaving a gap in his living room to the outdoors allowing rainwater in.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for Housing Management and Modernisation, said: “We responded to a repair log back in August and fixed the pipe but quickly realised that far more issues needed dealing with than the initial report.

“We now have a full plan of works in place for Mr Mohid’s flat including bathroom fitting replacement, washing machine fitting and full redecorating, among other works.

“We have not identified any issues with sewage and any asbestos issues are contained and dealt with using specialist contractors. We will also ensure that Mr Mohid continues to receive any housing support he needs.”

OVER 300 kids from eight Herne Hill schools have helped set a new world record for the highest number of contributions to a colourby-numbers artwork - with the help of BAFTA winning actor Mark Rylance.

The kids were part of 2,332 residents who contributed to a mural colouring over September 12 to 13, smashing the previous record of 1,119 participants in Mexico.

They were painting a 40m mural of Herne Hill highlights on the underpass which runs between Station Square and Milkwood Road. Lucy Reynolds, who managed the project with the Herne Hill Forum, said: “We are so excited that we believe we have broken the Guinness World Record. The event has been a massive community-led project that has brought together everyone, to transform our underpass into a space that is beautiful, right at the heart of the Herne Hill community. The support we had was a true inspiration and reflection of the spirit of this community.”

The primary schools involved included those for kids with special educational needs, as well as one for children with learning difficulties.

The Herne Hill Forum commissioned artist Victor Szepessy to design the artwork, which is part of an effort to renovate the area. He said: “It’s a living

piece of art, reflecting Herne Hill residents’ knowledge of what makes the place unique, key buildings, the local Brockwell Park, as well as its history, and all the people that make this community including historical figures and local celebrities.

“I have been overwhelmed with the number of people who have pitched into make this happen, from those who have painted, to the volunteers who have helped organise today’s event.”

The mural was created on parachute fabric, which will then be pasted into place once completed, before being covered with anti-graffiti varnish.

There are also plans for the disused space above the station – where the event was held - close to the mural to be turned into a community room and new town hall. Ms Reynolds added: “The space above the station is huge, with beautiful views across Herne Hill. Our vision is to turn this forgotten place into a vibrant forum for events, activities and entrepreneurship, harnessing the demand for a new civic space right at the heart of our community.

“We would love to hear people’s ideas for how we might use this space.”

The schoolchildren were joined in their efforts by film star Mark Rylance, best known for playing the BFG in the movie adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book. The actor and local resident said: “It’s great that this space can be celebrated and has been decorated especially by the children.”

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has apologised for wrongly sending letters to 500 people receiving care services telling them they need to start paying.

The letter, dated August 21, tells adult social care recipients that their package has been reassessed and they need to begin paying for their care from September 3.

The error left a substantial number of families receiving council funded care in limbo – because they didn’t know whether the care would be funded or not.

One person affected by the blunder who did not wish to be named – said they had taken over their relative’s care themselves as a result of the letter, rather than risk running up debt to the council.

She said: “We got the letter over the

bank holiday.

“So the earliest I could speak to someone was Tuesday and it was the following week that the new charges were supposed to start.

“The timing of them, even if they end up being correct, it’s outrageous. You don’t give people one week to organise care for somebody.”

Her mother, 83, is bed-bound, partiallyblind and has dementia. She received three visits a day as part of care services which cost up to three hundred pounds a week.

The error has meant that she has needed to change their working hours in order to care for her mother rather than risk running up hundreds or thousands of pounds of debt to the council.

They first raised the error two weeks ago, when the letter was received, but have not since received clarification on whether they have to pay for their mum’s care.

Now she is visiting her mother three

times a day on top of her full time job and doing weekend work to make sure she is properly cared for.

She said: “The reason I’ve done it is because I didn’t want to assume that hers was one sent in error. Because if they say no, yours is correct, by that time she would owe thousands of pounds.

“I’m not going to take that chance.

She added: “We’re talking about very vulnerable people, elderly people, people who have psychological issues.

“They don’t need to be getting those letters especially if they have nobody to advocate on their behalf.

“The care would still continue but all that would happen is that the company would say you now owe us lots of money because Southwark Council have stopped paying.”

When the News rang the number on the letter, an automated message said the line was experiencing a high volume of calls and the department was aware of the error.

It said: “If you are calling regarding the letter dated 22 August please note we are aware of this and we are looking into a way to rectify this.”

Approached by the News, Cllr Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, schools and adult care said the council “sincerely apologised” for the “worry and concern” caused by the blunder.

She said: “This should not have happened and I want to personally reassure residents that I have investigated this matter and the appropriate action has been taken.

“Due to an administrative error approximately 500 out of 2,500 residents received client contribution letters that contained incorrect information.

“As soon as we became aware of this we worked swiftly to rectify the matter.

We wrote to all residents who received the incorrect letter and provided them with the correct information, as well as responding to individual queries raised directly with the team.

She added: “We also highlighted the issue on the front page of the council’s website at the earliest opportunity. If any residents are still concerned about this matter please do get in touch with us.”

Upset over Rotherhithe Tunnel restrictions

NEW RESTRICTIONS placed on vehicles going into the Rotherhithe tunnel left drivers reeling this week, after it was closed over the weekend for “essential ventilation work.”

Goods vehicles heavier than two tonnes or higher than two metres are no longer allowed to use the crossing.

They are now being encouraged to use Tower Bridge or the Blackwall Tunnel to cross the river.

Among those caught out by the change are specialist mini-buses taking disabled children to school.

One mother affected, who gave her name as Catherine, told the News: “Loads of special needs transport buses use the tunnel.

“If they can’t use the tunnel it’s going to be a disaster.

“Other routes add literally hours to their journey – my daughter Ruby is 14 and a wheelchair user. It’s the only way she can get to school from our home.”

Specialist groups provide transport to special needs schools north of the river and many of them use the Rotherhithe tunnel as their main crossing point.

When she asked TfL for clarification, a spokesperson told the mother – who is based in the Isle of Dogs - that the special needs transport would still fall foul of the newly placed restrictions on vehicle sizes and weights.

Black cabs had been told they were allowed to use the tunnel after the new restrictions came into place on Monday.

Black cab driver Paul Cook said on Twitter: “This morning they weren’t letting any use the tunnel, I had a chat with the copper at the tunnel this afternoon and he said they made a mistake Another, named only as Stephen, told Transport for London: “They have turned me and many other taxis away.”

Gareth Powell, TfL's managing director of surface transport, said: “Safety is our top priority and this closure and changes to the vehicles allowed in the tunnel is absolutely necessary to ensure the tunnel's future.”

Car and bus collision on the roundabout A CAR and bus collided on the Rotherhithe tunnel roundabout in the early hours of Monday morning (September 17) after the car appeared to be driving the wrong way.

The collision involving a number 47 bus and a black car, which was allegedly driving in the wrong

direction happened shortly after 1am.

No-one was seriously injured in the crash, while TfL said it was aware of the head-on collision involving the Shoreditch bound bus.

Police and ambulance crew were called to the scene.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Police were called shortly after 01.00hrs on Monday, 17 September to reports of road traffic collision involving a bus and a car.

“Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended but there were no serious injuries.

Enquiries continue.”

THE ELEVENTH annual Bermondsey Street Festival was a massive hit on Saturday, where dog lovers (and their diamante collars) headed down for a day of fashion, festivities, artisan bakers, and candlestick makers.

Hitting the London Square stage

were twelve piece band Matuki, playing West African music fused with urban funk, and then it was over to They Say Jump, an unstoppable force of reggae and ska sounds. The festival offered the finest food from the top of the Shard to the bottom of Bermondsey Street and Tower Bridge Road. And mingling in the crowd were a series street led performances including the Pomba Girls troupe.

A ROTHERHITHE woman is planning on walking 52km in one go to raise money for a homelessness charity.

Fortunately she reported them to police without handing over any cash, but the incident has had a long-lasting effect on her: “It makes me feel angry to think how many people will be scammed.

"I also feel depressed; the people who do this kind of thing don’t see the misery and bewilderment it causes.”

Miss Jackson's story coincides with London Trading Standards Week, held from September 10-14, and a campaign to stop the fraudsters in Southwark.

The council says rogue traders typically show up uninvited to do work on people's homes and once inside may invent a non-existent problem that needs urgent attention - often for a grossly inflated price - which can escalate into more serious works.

Southwark Council says fraudsters are active in the borough as six incidents have been reported to its team within the last four months - with residents losing more than £54,000 in total.

There are likely to have been many more unreported cases.

In one incident in Peckham, from May of this year, a roof was fraudulently removed, costing a vulnerable resident a staggering £36,500.

Across London, it is believed that trading standards officers have stopped people from being ripped off to the tune of more than two million pounds in the last year.

The council says nobody should give money over the phone or at the door, or make decisions about buying goods or services on their doorstep.

Rob Vale, chair of London Trading Standards’ doorstep crime group said: “Trading standards officers in London are working very hard to protect our most vulnerable residents in what are increasingly difficult times for local authorities.

"This type of work relies on dedicated, passionate officers who are motivated to safeguard their local residents.

"However, doorstep crime is known to be grossly under reported and we can only do something about it if we know about it."

Tessa Gooding, 33, will walk from Teddington Lock to the Thames Barrier with her rescue dog Thali to raise money for the 999 Club.

Her sponsored walk, which takes place on Saturday October 27, will give the charity money towards its respite and support services for homeless people.

Tessa, who is the co-founder of the Surrey Quays-based social enterprise Urban Patchwork, said: “I thought it was important to do something in London given the problem with homelessness in London in particular.

“There’s so many in temporary accommodation or having to be housed outside of London away from their jobs, schools and social networks.”

Most of the profits from Urban Patchwork, a residential sales and lettings agency she co-founded with her brother Toby, 37, in May last year, will go towards supporting homeless housing and support.

In addition, customers of the agency are encouraged to donate to the 999 Club – based in Deptford - on their website, with matched funding from Tessa and Toby.

She said: “I’ve always been interested in homeless and housing issues.

“I grew up in New Cross on Amersham Road with my brother and it was a very neglected place for many years.”

The pair hope through their lettings agency and charity work to help “people falling out the bottom of a system that

providing a free, six-week course with St Mungo's Recovery College to help gamblers in Southwark.

According to Cambridge University research, problem gambling was indicated in 11.6 per cent of the homeless population interviewed, compared to 0.7 per cent in the general population of Britain.

The new course will run every Thursday from October 4 to November 8, from 5.30-7pm at St Mungo's on Rushworth Street.

The course is open to anyone who wants to stop gambling or control and

Modules will look at what leads to problem gambling, how to minimise harm caused by gambling, and how to prevent or manage relapses.

A SEVENTY-YEAR-OLD lady from East Dulwich is warning people in Southwark to be vigilant after being targeted by doorstep rogue traders.

Patricia Jackson, who was born in Nunhead and lived in Peckham and Camberwell before moving to her home near East Dulwich, said: “There was a knock at the door and a man introduced himself, he said there was a problem with the drains.

"He said because the mains cover was on my property I’d have to pay for the hire of the plant equipment to fix it.

"He seemed to know about my neighbour and his son and made me feel terribly responsible - he said if the drain overflowed with effluent my neighbour and the community centre would be affected as well.”

The man was with others, who tried to pressure Miss Jackson by phoning her, requesting she transfer money over.

“They asked if I had cash in the house and then they wanted me to transfer funds, but I don’t have a computer," she said.

"They tried to get me to use telephone banking, but I said I didn’t have that, and twice they suggested a cab - they didn’t

Homeless people often fail to get support because of bureaucracy, added Ms Gooding, meaning the work of charities like the 999 Club is vital.

Tessa suggested the idea for a social enterprise to her brother Toby - who has worked for as letting agent for fifteen years – after completing a planning degree in 2014.

Her past experience working in charity fundraising and volunteering in South Africa made her see how vulnerable people without adequate housing are, the Urban Patchwork director said.

She said: “I used to work in charity fundraising and I often felt as if I was plugging a hole for a system that didn’t work.

“I volunteered in South Africa for a few months and I was doing some writing for the Social Justice Coalition about poor sanitation and crime.

“People become so vulnerable if they don’t have adequate housing.”

Her brother Toby, who is a co-director of Urban Patchwork, cycled 100 miles earlier in the year for the homelessness charity – despite not having much time to train.

The pair have strong family links to the area which motivates them in their fundraising.

Tessa, who is currently living in Belvedere, said: “Our relatives have lived in Surrey Quays since 1998.

We first moved to New Cross in the early 80s, my parents were in business, they moved for the warehouses.”

Her first part-time job was at the Surrey Quays shopping centre Body Shop from age 16 to 18.

FINALLY FROM this week Bank branch trains of the Northern Line are stopping at Kennington station again.

Four new passenger passageways have been dug as part of the Northern Line extension, which had meant passengers had been unable to interchange for Charing Cross at the station since May. Final fitting works will still be carried out as part of the project,

which once completed will make it easier to interchange and is essential for plans to extend the line to Battersea Power Station by 2020.

Stuart Harvey, TfL’s Director of Major Projects, said: “I’d like to thank customers for their patience while we worked around the clock to construct four new passageways at Kennington.

“When completed, the passageways will make it easier to interchange at the station.

“The Northern Line Extension is an essential part of our investment programme which will continue to

improve customers’ journeys and add vital new capacity to the capital’s transport network.”

The work saw engineers dig out 2,000 tonnes of clay by hand and use around 900 tonnes of concrete to support the passageways.

The extension will bring Battersea and surrounding areas within 15 minutes of the city and will support 25,000 new jobs and 20,000 new homes.

TfL said it would also enable the regeneration of Battersea, Nine Elms and Vauxhall.

NEW TFL data reveals that Southwark locations are some of the most popular for people using the ‘Hopper’ bus fares.

Two bus stops outside of Elephant & Castle station – stops E and R – are the second and third most popular Hopper locations, only behind Brixton station.

7750 and 7400 Hopper trips are made from the stops every week, which gives unlimited £1.50 bus travel for an hour after tapping in on busses and trams.

Other popular Southwark Hopper locations include London Bridge, which is the 20th most popular location for people using the fares.

TFL also said today it is in the final testing stages for introducing Monday to Friday Weekly Capping onto the Oyster system.

The upgrade means that anyone who

uses Oyster or a contactless card will have their weekly travel capped at the cost of an equivalent 7-day Travelcard.

More than 220 million Hopper journeys have been made since the fare was launched in September 2016.

Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “I’m absolutely delighted that tens of thousands of Londoners are benefiting from my Hopper fare every single day.

“The Hopper has helped more than 220m journeys in the past two years and the unlimited fare is helping even more Londoners save money.

“Together with my TfL fare freeze, it’s making a real difference in making travel affordable right across our city.”

Hopper fares are part of TFL’s initiatives to make London transport cleaner and cheaper.

Last month the organisation launched a campaign for Londoners to ‘Tap into the wonderful world of off-peak’, encouraging families to visit the city’s hidden gems.

The family of murdered teen Mohamed Dura-Ray stand on the spot where he was killed three years ago and ask for witnesses to finally come forward

FAMILY AND friends of murdered teen Mohamed Dura-Ray laid flowers this week on the spot where he was stabbed to death exactly three years ago.

They reissued an appeal for witnesses to come forward and tell the police what they knew about Mo’s murder – finally to put his killer behind bars.

The Aylesbury Estate teenager was only sixteen when he was stabbed to death shortly before his seventeenth birthday outside Canterbury Place on Walworth’s Newington Estate on September 14, 2015.

An inquest into the keen Man United fan’s death heard that Mo had been involved in an altercation with an unknown male before dying of a single stab wound to the chest at 10.52pm.

Despite a £20,000 police reward for information, and a sample of blood found on a letter at the scene which matched a suspect's DNA, the case fell through when a witness refused to give evidence.

The coroner gave a verdict of unlawful killing – and Mo’s murderer is still at large.

Now three years on, Mo’s family and friends have urged witnesses to cooperate with the police so that justice is finally done.

Laying flowers in Canterbury Place this morning - where the teen died - mum Mariama Karama said: “I’m standing here, I’m mourning, crying for my son.

But I can’t have him back again.

“I just want justice for myself. Justice for this country, justice for the community.

“So I’m pleading who was there that night, who was there that evening to come out and say something to the police.

“There’s a number to call, even if you don’t give your name, as long you’re saying the truth, that’s all I’m pleading for.”

The grieving mother spoke of her anger at falling police numbers as London has seen a surge of violent crime, and urged greater use of stop and search powers.

She said: “How many children have lost their lives? There is no help from this Government. They’re not helping us.

“Let them stop cutting down police, cutting down prosecution. It’s wrong, closing all the police stations.”

Three years and £20,000 reward later and still Mo’s killer is on the loose Friends of the murdered teen also urged witnesses to come forward to get justice for the sixteen-year-old, who had wanted to become an engineer.

Sam Dada, 22, said: “He was like a little brother to me. He was a happy kid, very funny, full of life, loved his friends and family.”

Sam, who had been friends with Mo for five years, urged witnesses to finally tell police everything they knew about the night of Mo’s death.

He said: “Do what you can. It’s resting on his mum’s chest. Help his mum more than anything.”

Following her speech, Mo’s mum told the News: “I loved my son so much and I miss him. I always come to give him the last respects.

“Mo was a very good boy, he was a bubbly boy.

“I’m sad. To bury your child, not your

child bury you. I feel so much pain in my heart to bury my child.”

Mariama also praised the work of Neil Coyle MP, who was in attendance, saying he was “like family to this community.”

The MP told the News: “It’s been three years since Mo was murdered here.

Mariama his mum is still waiting for justice. That’s an unbearable impact on the family.

“There were so many people here on the evening that he was killed but we know that hardly any witnesses have come forward to give statements to the police.

“That really worries me because it means no-one has been held to account for the killing. Someone could be in prison now if more people come forward.”

more willing to invite knife crime charities in to give talks.

He said: “I highlighted in the Commons this week the fact that the Government has withheld £100 million from the Met – that would be 4,500 officers on the street now if they’d been given that funding.

“We need more schools’ involvement as well.

“Some schools are reluctant to have charities involved in tacking in knife crime because they don’t want parents to worry they have a problem with knife crime. All schools should be doing it, it should be compulsory.

“The final strand is more opportunities to be involved in other activities – especially those who don’t have play areas in their own homes, or have families working to the bone.

“Things like boxing clubs, dance clubs,

whatever it may be which give positive networks to young people.”

However he added that no-one should demonise Southwark’s “brilliant young people”, saying only a small minority turned to knife crime or violence.

Family desperate for information about arson attack that claimed life of seven-year-old boy

THE FAMILY of a seven-year-old arson victim has paid public tribute to him for the first time as they joined with police in a new appeal for public information - in a bid to find those responsible for setting fire to his family home.

Joel Urhie, who lived at the house in Deptford with his mother and older sister Sarah, tragically died as a result of the deliberate attack in Adolphus Street, SE8, shortly before 3.30am on Tuesday, 7 August. His mother and sister Sarah, 20, managed to escape by jumping from first floor windows.

Tega Majoroh, 18, who was Joel's cousin, spent a lot of time with the little boy and frequently stayed with the family at the house targeted.

On Monday she paid tribute to the little boy she saw as a younger brother, as she joined officers investigating the attack to make a plea for help from anyone who can shed light on the terrible crime that took his life.

Tega said: "Joel has been gone for a while now, but it seems like just yesterday he was taken from us. He brought so much light to the family without even knowing it. His death has been a tragedy to us all. His absence has caused a huge sense of loss. As young as he was, he meant so much to so many."

The student, who is about to begin an economics degree at university and has also been a youth worker, said that she was 'blessed' to have spent so much time with Joel and paid touching tribute to the first time she met him.

"He was more my little brother than my little cousin. I remember when he was three and couldn’t say my name for ages.

I would come to the house and say ‘Hi Joel.’ He'd say ‘Hi Tera’ and run to me with so much happiness," she recalled.

"Joel was like the sunshine after rain.

Coming home to him was like a breath of fresh air. He was always happy and always made others around him happy.

There are so many memories that I will always treasure - and there will always be a hole in our hearts where his memory will lie."

Tega urged any members of the public who know anything to look to their consciences and come forward to assist the police to help them bring the perpetrators to account.

She said: "As someone who’s lost a brother and for the sake of his mother and sister, we are appealing to anyone who has a heart and has any knowledge of what happened to call the police and give any information they have."

Joel's mother Iroroefe Urhie, 49, who spent a month in hospital recovering after being badly injured in the escape from the burning house, joined Tega in paying tribute to her son.

She said: "Joel was the sweetest most caring little boy you could ever meet. He was so intelligent and always curious to learn new things. He never complained about anything.

Iroroefe remembered how much he loved going to church, and how he led the Praise and Worship at the weekly bible study group the mother and son used to attend.

She added: "Joel always wanted people around him - that was why we used to go to the park a lot so that he could make new friends. His smile and laugh would light up a room and he was so full of life and energy."

A spokesperson from Joel's school, Tidemill Academy, where he was due to start Year Three this September, also added their tribute, saying: “We were deeply saddened by the news of Joel's death. He was a kind, happy and smiley boy who loved running around and playing with his friends.

"The pain and suffering that his family are going through now is unimaginable, and I would urge anyone in the community who knows anything at all about what happened, to get in touch with the investigation team. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this extremely difficult time.”

Detectives from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command have been working hard to establish the circumstances of the fire since it took place just over six weeks ago.

Detective Inspector Alison Cole, from the investigation team, said: “This horrific incident has left a family shattered and the tragic loss of such a young life in these circumstances has deeply affected the whole wider community in Deptford.

“We are very grateful that Joel's family whilst still grieving have been willing to come together with us today to strengthen our fresh appeal to the public for any witnesses, or any information, that might possibly assist us.

"Did you see anything suspicious in or around Adolphus Street on Tuesday 7 August in the hours prior to the attack, or have you heard anything about how it might have started.

"Even the smallest piece of information could help us at this stage so I would urge you please to contact the incident room without delay. If you do not want to talk to police you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously.

"This devastating fire claimed the life of an innocent child, a loss his family will never get over, and we desperately need your help to bring those responsible to justice."

Joel's body was found by emergency services who attended the scene in the upstairs bedroom he shared with his mother. A post mortem conducted at St Thomas’ Hospital on Wednesday, 8 August found his injuries to have been consistent with fire and smoke inhalation.

Two men, aged 21 and 29, were arrested On August 11 on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and arson with intent to endanger life. But have subsequently been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Free traditional Senegalese crafting workshops on offer

A NEW play area has been opened in an area which was once the favourite spot of a young Rio Ferdinand.

The playground was unveiled last week in Leyton Square, Peckham, which is enclosed by the Friary Estate.

Among the new equipment are cradle swings and a crocodile rocker for the

under-fives, with an elevated timber trail and an interlinked climbing frame for older kids.

An outdoor gym and a newlyresurfaced outdoor games area have also been included.

Cllr Rebecca Lury, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for culture, leisure, equalities and communities, said: “It is lovely to see children having fun with the brand new play equipment in Leyton Square. I’m delighted that the council’s investment has secured the

future of play here for generations to come.”

The play area is the fourth opened by the council this summer, with Cllr Lury joining children to celebrate the park’s opening. The new facilities were unveiled with a bouncy castle, games and cake, but Leyton Square was first opened to the public in 1901.

Local families and children were consulted throughout 2017 on their ideas for the park before it was unveiled last Thursday.

LONDON COLLEGE of Communication is opening its doors and offering free comic-making, painting and fabric jewellery courses this autumn - including traditional Senegalese crafts.

The series of public events is part of this year's London Design Festival's exhibition Everything Happens So Much, throughout September and October.

In a 'cell-painting' session, amateur artists will be making decorated sheets of acetate using their own designs or with existing templates, modelled on glasspainting found in Dakar, the Senegalese capital.

The fabric jewellery workshop will also teach traditional some traditional Senegalese crafting.

Dr Nicky Ryan, Dean of Design at London College of Communication,

said: “Visitors can expect to be engaged by a variety of stimulating shows, activities, performances and talks.

“We hope to give people a sense of the scope of our teaching, research and practice and how we see our role as educators in terms of the wider civic, social and ethical responsibilities that we share.

“I hope that visitors will take away an understanding of what we do as a Design School: the issues we struggle with, the failures we learn from, the opportunities we embrace, the pleasures we bring, the problems we solve and the questions we raise.

“Most of all I hope they will see the potential that a university education in design offers and how it can enhance not only the lives of our students but also the wider communities and environments they work within.”

OUTHWARK IS the best borough, in the best city, in the best country in the world and children growing up here deserve the best opportunities.

Sadly, the independent Social Metrics Commission has revealed that child poverty is rising nationally and in parts of our local community, including Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, it is estimated that four in ten children are living in poverty.

Labour in Government lifted millions of children, families and pensioners out of poverty and legislated to end child poverty specifically. Sadly, measures taken since 2010 now mean over four million children in poverty being let down by our national government.

The Lib Dem deputy leader announced that their party must ‘own responsibility’ for backing austerity when in Coalition with the Tories. Child poverty is one such issue. The Government scrapped child poverty measurements after dismantling

much of the support for children directly as well as for working families. The closure of many Sure Starts, cuts to tax credits and the introduction of the restrictive Universal Credit with its inherent delays and inability to recognise childcare costs for some families all had a terrible effect on the children losing out.

S A clinical commissioning group (CCG), we plan and pay for health services in Southwark.

We recently held our annual general meeting (AGM), which is a chance to reflect on what we’ve achieved over the previous twelve months and look ahead to the next year.

Despite the various challenges we face across the NHS, we have continued to make good progress.

Local people have told us that they want to be more involved in their care and for the teams that look after them to work more

closely together.

We also know that too many people are developing long-term conditions (illnesses that cannot be cured, but can be managed through care) and that with a growing and aging population, this number is likely to increase.

For example, Public Health England estimates that by 2025, the number of people with diabetes in Southwark is likely to rise by more than 3,000.

Consequently, we need to do more to help people stay well, and we intend to do this by transforming community based care.

Child poverty is a national disgrace and has much broader effects on children’s long-term health, social mobility, educational attainment and the productivity of the national economy overall.

Thankfully, Southwark is not faring as badly as some areas.

Free, healthy primary school meals introduced by the Labour council (shockingly opposed by Lib Dem councillors at the time) has been one significant cushion. But Coalition and subsequent Tory Government policies are having an effect and are denying local children the best chances in life they deserve sadly.

The Archbishop of Canterbury spoke out on social ills like child

poverty at the TUC conference. He specifically mentioned policies including Universal Credit and the shameful undermining of in-work pay through zero-hour contracts for example.

He also highlighted cuts and delays to social security which have left half a million children reliant on foodbanks. I campaigned against these measures when I ran a charity helping disabled people and carers.

That the head of our established national faith has felt the need to speak out on these issues due to Government inaction is astonishing. Ministers must finally open their ears to concerns and provide solutions for the millions of families that their policies have impoverished.

Millwall: The Musical PLAYWRIGHT ANNETTE Brook lives in East Dulwich and loyally supports her local team Dulwich Hamlet as well as Crystal Palace. So how did she come to write Cold Blow Lane, a musical about Millwall? This was a story that had to be investigated, writes Michael Holland...

Annette, who has been writing poetry from an early age, had an idea for a play set in the 1981 Brixton riots. ‘I never wrote it down,’ she says, still, after all these years, looking annoyed with herself for not putting pen to paper. ‘I think I doubted I knew how,’ she reveals. In 2005 she sent her idea to Channel 4 for their 'The Play's the Thing’ competition and she made it through to the final 30: ‘That was out of over 2,000 entries,’ piped up the lady now looking less annoyed with herself.

‘As you can imagine this was an enormous boost and got me thinking that theatre was the space for me.’

As well as a penchant for writing, unsurprisingly the talented young Annette already had an affinity with theatre, instilled through trips to plays with her mum and with school. ‘I love all kinds of theatre, from tiny fringe

shows to West End musicals… I enjoy the immediacy of the audience reaction with live performance,’ she emphasises.

Moving on, Annette began collecting degrees at Goldsmiths University, and then, taking her play idea, her passion for writing and the Channel 4 motivation, she approached the Royal Court who invited her to join their prestigious Young Writers’ programme.

It was here that she says she was ‘provided with a comprehensive grounding in writing for theatre.’ Since then Ms Brook has had plays performed at Theatre 503, Brockley Jack, White Bear, The Albany, Soho Theatre and The Feminist Library, amongst others.

And next on that list of fine theatres to put on Annette Brook’s work will be the relatively new Matchstick Piehouse, a mixed use arts space in Deptford, with most of the people involved in the production hailing from SE London: The director Theo Cowan is from Peckham, Rob Howat, the composer from Lewisham with other team members located in New Cross. And maybe this is how it should be because most of Brook’s plays are set in SE London.

However, there is not one Millwall fan

in the group so I asked, Why Millwall?

‘It's got such a resonance in South London,’ she says as the warm up before a list of reasons: ‘I knew a Millwall Lioness at school and she was fiercely proud of both the women's and men's clubs...The Matchstick Piehouse is a stone's throw from The Den and the Matchstick team are keen to tell stories about the locality. I worked with Matchstick on a play earlier this year and they mentioned they'd like to have a Millwall Musical so I thought, why not!’

Hence, the premise for Annette Brook’s Cold Blow Lane is a ska/funk/rock and roll musical imagining the affiliation of two legendary football clubs in the 80s: Millwall and the Millwall Lionesses; one seeking a better image the other the recognition it deserves.

I asked the writer if only fans of musical theatre would enjoy this: ‘I hope the play speaks to a wide audience.

There's references to football, obviously, and to 1986 South London, which will please a certain crowd, though you could come without a knowledge of either.’

So, should football fans go to see it?

Her immediate ‘Yes!’ hit me like I’d been volleyed by Harry Kane with his eye on a goal. ‘The Matchstick Piehouse team are all football fans, I’m a football fan - We care about football…

It was fun to write about World Cup 86 (the year Cold Blow Lane is set) whilst World Cup 2018 was being played out, but the Women's World Cup is next year, so it is very exciting that the profile of women's football is on the up - So of course football fans should come to see it - it's one hell of a night out!’

And I won’t be arguing with that because anything with ska and football and women and SE London involved in it is good enough for me.

Actor brings play to home ground Tragedy in Thames Tunnel NANCY SULLIVAN was born in Rotherhithe at a time when the old docks were still a wasteland, when the only docklands development was Surrey Docks Farm and coffee was instant and from a jar. The only constant from those times is the domestic violence that is still one of the major killers of women, writes Michael Holland...

Abi Zakarian’s Fabric gives voice to one woman’s experience of sexual violence and trauma, and through Nancy Sullivan in the role of Leah Cavendish we bear witness to how domestic abuse permeates everyday life, and how a million small things some seemingly harmless - can result in one terrible act.

Nancy knew from an early age that she wanted to act: ‘I wasn’t a particularly confident child or great academically,’ she recalls, ‘but when I acted I just felt really safe and felt really sure of myself.’ It was her father who first noticed her flair for performing, but he died suddenly when Nancy was just 10. But her mother, who still lives in SE16, carried on supporting Nancy’s dream. She says, ‘After Dad died my Mum was brilliant raising three of us and letting me get involved when and where I could with performing, driving me everywhere and letting me show her my practised pieces in the living room for hours… We didn’t know anyone in

the industry or have any “way in” so it was just about grabbing any opportunities.’ The young actor went to the BRIT School but feels her best training came under the tutelage of actor/director Peter Ferris during Monday night sessions in a room in a pub with other teenagers.

Bringing Nancy’s back story up to date, she has just completed filming on Call The Midwife and is also in the new Afterlife series by Ricky Gervais showing next year on Netflix, but, she jokes, ‘Hollywood isn’t knocking yet!’

I’d say that if Gervais has knocked, who cares about Hollywood?

I wanted to know what drew her to the character Leah: ‘I love the role, the challenge of a one-woman play and what it leaves the audience challenging… She’s a woman in her 30s, working class and aspiring to have all the things she’s meant to want. She’s funny, relatable and brutally honest…

Leah is your sister, daughter, girlfriend.

We all know women like Leah, she resonates in all of us.’ The passion emanating from Nancy when she spoke of playing this woman was undeniable.

Fabric, is a production in support of Solace Women’s Aid, which for more than 40 years has supported women and children in London to build safe, strong lives free from violence and abuse. The play will tour to four London boroughs identified by Solace as target areas, and Southwark is one of those boroughs.

Nancy was visibly moved when she spoke of performing on her own manor: ‘I can’t wait to bring this play to home ground in Southwark, and I'd love to know what the Southwark people make of it.’

Being born in Rotherhithe myself, I already know I’m going to like it.

Life before the ‘green lung’

THE PLACE where Burgess Park now stands used to be a thriving canal, which was the centre of industrial, as well as social activity.

Building for The Grand Surrey Canal started in 1801- it extended three miles southward and joined the Greenland Dock to Camberwell Road, with a further branch to Peckham, built in 1826.

It was used to move market produce from the suburbs and served Surrey Commercial Docks - it was intended to continue into Epsom but lacked funds so building was stopped in 1811. The canal connected Camberwell and Peckham which were villages - and their produce to suppliers.

The canal transformed the area because barges brought in material which could be used in industry so the area was covered with streets, houses and industrial buildings. With the working class and industry houses moving in, the middle class moved out and the population increased.

Revenue came from recreational activities such as pleasure boats and tolls.

Bathing was popular but in 1812 it was announced that a 'gross and insufferable nuisance was being committed by bathing and duck hunting'. However, in 1826, the council kindly said 'they didn't want to interfere with the use of the canal for bathing'. Photographs show boys fishing happily in the canal and in fact, it had a fishing license but this was stopped when the canal became too polluted to keep fish.

Not all the memories connecting children with the canal are happy- several actually fell in! A teacher, Frederick E.Nichols recalls 'children constantly falling in' and there is a story of one child rescuing another which led to him receiving an award from the council. Not only did local kids go fishing and fall inthey also swam in the canals and rode the empty barges! A friendly face called Bobby used to patrol the area to make sure that no one was in any danger but the children knew when he came so learnt how to avoid him!

Of course, the main use of the canal was industry and in 1816, E.R.Burtt and Sons were burning lime along the canals. Burtt said it was known as a 'whitening pit' because all 'the men who worked there all came out with white hair and eyebrows'. In 1925 household waste like ash went from the Council Depot to Sittingbourne in Kent and came back as bricks - which were used to build more houses. Other businesses include leather, salt works, and an ice ware house!

The surrounding industrial buildings suffered a lot of damage in WWII, during the Blitz and The Canal declined further until it close in March, 1971 when it was drained and filled in. One member of the community said that 'once it stopped being a canal, it was horrible'. There were several reasons why the council decided to cover the canal - it was dirty and polluted so expensive to maintain, it was dangerous and the Surrey Docks had closed so it wasn't needed for industry

anymore. A sports centre was also planned for Surrey Quays which could occupy kids who could no longer play by the canal.

It is now a green area and the route the canal followed is a footpath and cycle route. The idea for Burgess Park came from the 1943 Abercrombie Plan for open spaces in London - it was meant to be a 'green lung' of the capital. The proposal would shape the planning of the area for twenty years. It was named Burgess Park in 1973 (after Councillor Jessie Burgess Camberwell's first female Mayor).

Although the canal is not there anymore, the memory lives on with remaining remnants of the period such as the lime kiln, library, baths, washhouses and the Chumleigh Gardens Almshouses. Not many people know that the area behind the almshouses used to be a ginger beer factory.

But now all that remains of the canal itself is a patch of grass...

eckham led the way with utilising the wasted space in a multi-storey car park to create a cultural vibe that was a benefit to the whole community, and now Wapping has now followed the trend with street food, DJs, screens for sport and a rooftop bar on the Tobacco Dock car park. They have also added pétanque and croquet which is an unexpected flourish - but there is still room for improvement, writes Michael Holland...

Skylight has been open for over a year now and has built up a good reputation going by the numbers it attracts to its three top levels of the car park. It ticks all the right boxes for the twenty-something crowd it targets but needs to cut down on the inordinate number of long queues dotted around the place; long queue for food, long queue for every bar - we almost upped and left rather than wait any longer, and would have done so if

this visit wasn’t work. But it did explain why people queued, and then bought large pitchers of beer, or multi-bottles of wine to save on continually standing in a line for a single cocktail or pint.

And the food was far from fine dining.

The choice was grilled meat in a wrap at Yiro, or grilled beef in a bun at Flip Side, and all served by a production line of Emos, almost silently throwing handfuls of prepped salad on to bread before criss-

crossing the lot with chilli sauce, ketchup or mayo. Or all three. At Yiro (Pitta bread), ‘Go Greek’ means having chips in your wrap.

And any attractive aromas of good cooking that might have lured customers to the shanty town-like, street food corner were overpowered by the smell of deep fat fryers all fired up and churning out chips by the box load. To me, the whole place looked like some kids had made a

camp and was now being run by students who were never going to finish their next assignment.

The cocktails, however, were excellent.

My companion, Julia, had a Gin Jam which she deemed so nice she had another. But, in my world, if a drink is created with Bombay Sapphire, raspberry puree, rhubarb jam, lemon juice and soda, then it has every reason to be good.

And she did go rather quiet as she ate her Halloumi wrap, so I guess that hit expectations too. Plus, the chicken in my souvlaki was very good.

To drink I had the Basil Beauty: Grey Goose Le Citron, pineapple juice, lime juice, sugar syrup, passionfruit pulp and basil leaves. It was quite exceptional, but not worth the 30 minute queueing up for.

That’s why I had a pint of Staropramen the next time I went to the bar - I needed to rehydrate after being out in that hot sun for so long!

So, okay, Skylight is not for me but it was just the thing for many others who seemingly enjoyed the buzz of queueing the queues, I assume, had a ‘destination’ that gave people a purpose. In all fairness, everyone at Skylight looked like they were having a good time. The ambient noise was the clamour of fun, a cacophony of enjoyment - On the rooftop the music was redundant because it was overwhelmed by excited conversation.

The croquet and pétanque pitches were well used, although it didn’t look like any of those playing actually knew the rules of those games. But who does? And nobody was there for the views because the building isn’t really high enough; people were there to be with friends. If anything, Skylight has excellent views of taller buildings.

Peckham Levels took a while to settle into its successful format of providing food, drink, culture and community, and I fully expect Skylight to eventually do the same.

Bede House Association has been helping local people improve life for themselves, their families and the community in Southwark since 1938. Our New Bede Centre is being built on the Abbeyfield Estate, as part of the redevelopment of Maydew House. Bede’s youth clubs, our services for adults who have a learning disability, and our practical and emotional help for those experiencing domestic abuse are all running as normal whilst we prepare for our move to the New Bede Centre in 2021/22.

BESSEMER GRANGE PRIMARY SCHOOL – NAIRNE GROVE ROAD CLOSURE DURING TERM TIME

The London Borough of Southwark (Prescribed Routes) (Nairne Grove and Woodfarrs) Experimental Traffic Order 2018 1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that on 20 September 2018 it has made the above experimental order under sections 9 and 10 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

2. The effect of the experimental order will be to prohibit all vehicles, except pedal cycles, from entering into or proceeding in any part of: - (a) NAIRNE GROVE, which lies south-west of a point 103 metres north-east of the common boundary of Nos. 17 and 19 Nairne Grove (this includes the entirety of its north-west to south-east arm); and (b) WOODFARRS, the entirety of its north to south arm.

This experimental measure will be effective between the hours of 8am – 10am and 2:30pm – 4:30pm on Mondays to Fridays during the school-term (the dates of which will be determined by the staff of Bessemer Grange Primary School); and will be physically enforced with traffic signs and the installation of three movable barriers, at the following locations:- i) in NAIRNE GROVE (the north-west to southeast arm), at its junction with Sunray Avenue; ii) in NAIRNE GROVE (the north-east to south-west arm), at a point 103 metres north-east of the common boundary of Nos. 17 and 19 Nairne Grove; and iii) in WOODFARRS (the north to south arm), at a point 25 metres north-east of its junction with Nairne Grove.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark and in consultation with Transport for London hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. GAVIN ROSE was thrilled his team “rose to the challenge” to defeat league leaders Woking last weekend.

Michael Chambers gave Hamlet the lead in the third minute, before Harvey Bradbury levelled with 20 minutes left.

However, the visitors showed admirable courage to push for a winner, and got it thirteen minutes

from time through Iffy Allen’s stunning solo goal.

“It was a really good performance at an intimidating ground against a very good team,” Rose told the News. “They’ve proven themselves to be the strongest team in the league. We rose to the challenge really well and got our just desserts.

“We’ve had some of the senior players who haven’t put a marker down in the dressing room, so they’re sat on the bench. It’s made a few people wake up and realise that

The scheme was set up in 2012 by Dulwich fans, Neil Cole and Shaun Dooley. The club was suffering from financial problems leading to a diminished player budget for manager, Gavin Rose. There was also significant scepticism about the way in which the club was being run, specifically regarding where the few funds Dulwich had available were being directed. The 12th Man Scheme aimed to raise funds, in an independent account, that would be spent solely by Rose on playing staff, with total transparency.

The scheme is now in its seventh season and has hugely benefitted the club. The 12th Man has raised £85,000 since its launch, including an

astonishing £57,000 last season.

The list of players signed using the fund over the years comes to 23.

Rose explained the impact this has had on the pitch.

“It’s been very important,” he said.

“When it first came about we had a small budget and we needed a few players to maintain a challenge at the top of the league. Maidstone had more resources than us and the 12th Man really helped us out.

“Over time when we’ve had injuries it’s really helped us out in the short term – say for instance getting players in for a month or two during a crisis.

“One thing that must be said is that they [people donating] always endeavour to try and help. They don’t try to get involved with which players are being signed, they simply help where they can.”

Peckham Rye maintain momentum with friendly draw

Rose added: “The main focus is Tonbridge, we know they’re a good team, they’re top of the Ryman League. We know the way they play and we know it’ll be very tough. Our aim is to go to the next game and go from there.

“We have a few players playing for free at the moment. I think we’ve got enough in house at the moment.

I expect a few to leave the club as well. Once that’s done, we’ll take stock then we’ll think about further recruitment from there on in.”

Peckham wore their away kit for the first time against Southbank, playing in black and white, sponsored by Skehans Public House.

After opening their league campaign with two wins, Peckham Rye wanted to keep their momentum and treat this game as if it were competitive.

However, they were affected by the unavailability of key men Lee Turner, Charlie Eldridge and John Woolley, and had just one substitute.

Nevertheless, Peckham dominated possession early on, and Alex Russell threaded a through-ball to Duke Binitie who unselfishly squared to Tarique Jules, but he had strayed marginally offside to spurn a glorious chance to take the lead.

The game then opened up and a swift counter-attack put Binitie into space on the left and he produced an exceptional finish with the outside of his boot across the face of goal to give his side the lead.

But Southbank were quickly back on level terms when Elliot Hooper punished Peckham for giving away a cynical foul by firing home the free-kick.

Peckham started the second half slowly and fell behind with Hooper the provider as he set up Dan Salter who slotted home from six yards.

To Peckham’s credit they rallied and secured a draw when Danny Gibson anticipated a cross into the box to toe-poke in and make it 2-2.

Afterwards Russell said: “We would like to thank Southbank for the friendly and wish them luck for the season.”

Our Dulwich Hamlet reporter Ben Henderson considers the importance of the 12th Man Scheme to the club, and gets the thoughts on it of manager Gavin Rose.

He said: “There’s been so many it’d be rude to pick out a few. Connor French was one of the first, Frazer Shaw was excellent. It’s very difficult to pinpoint one that’s more valuable than the next.”

However, there have undoubtedly been some standout performers. In November 2012, Rose used the 12th Man account to pay the wages of Danny Carr, a young striker who had been released from Reading’s academy the previous summer. The forward repaid the fans’ funding by scoring 25 goals in 37 appearances, to inspire the side to promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division, before moving on to then-Championship side Huddersfield Town.

The 2014-15 season saw the arrival of full-back Frazer Shaw who spent an excellent season at Hamlet before

going on to spend two years in the Football League with Leyton Orient.

This season the scheme has provided funds to bring in centre-back Michael Kamara in response to the defensive injury crisis.

The scheme raises money in a number of ways. Firstly, they have donation buckets at every home game and encourage fans to donate any loose change. They also receive donations from fans via standing order. They run raffles and competitions every season, including the popular season prediction competition.

They occasionally receive donated goods, which they sell from the 12th Man stand at home games. This season, these donations have included stylish DHFC card wallets (for your Oyster card, season ticket or any other cards), a new book by Hamlet historian Roger Deason, and a set of replica Hamlet first-team shirts.

Rose continued: “I think along with support from the committee raising awareness of the club, the increase in support of the club, and the activity on the pitch, the 12th Man has been a vital part of the growth of the club over the years.

“It’s stepped in at key times when we’ve had no other avenue. It’s the fans’ money going straight into the team. There’s a feel-good factor seeing fans’ money going directly onto the pitch. Last season, in particular, the 12th Man kept us afloat for a month or two. Without it, I really can’t say what would have happened to the club.”

Given Dulwich’s ongoing financial problems, the need for the 12th Man appears to be as great as ever. The Hamlet faithful will have to pull together from a financial perspective if Dulwich are to challenge their more moneyed rivals in the near future.

FRESH FROM winning four of their last five league games, Dulwich travelled to the Mecca of cricket to play the Cross Arrows on the nursery ground at Lord’s last weekend.

Dulwich faced a daunting total of 313, but a remarkable unbeaten partnership of 87 for the last wicket saw them secure a famous victory by one wicket off the penultimate ball.

The home side had first use of a good batting pitch with a short boundary on one side. The openers had put 50 on the board in nine overs against Jon Lodwick and Kamran Munawar when skipper James Overy fell to a good running catch on the boundary by Patrick George. George soon joined the attack and he and Sunil Isaac put a brake on the scoring, with George taking 2-19 off seven overs and Isaac 130 off eight to reduce Cross Arrows to 137-4 after 27.3 overs.

George gave way to fourteen-year-old leg-spinner Ahmed Khan who produced a mixture of loose and challenging deliveries, and was unlucky not to take a wicket.

Salaar Waqar came on at the other end and struck in his first over when Kira Chathli held on to a blinder at mid-off, her second catch of the innings.

Three more wickets for Waqar saw the score decline to 228-8 in the 42nd over.

But this brought in left-hander Clint McCabe, who peppered the short-leg side boundary. He was particularly severe on George, who came back at the wrong end to concede 39 off two overs. McCabe fell to Sam Ellison in the 49th over with the score on 304, having made 59 off just 30 balls. The last pair lifted the score to 313-

9, with number four bat Phil Wise remaining unbeaten with 87, having faced 100 balls. Waqar, with 4-44, was the most successful bowler.

Khan then opened the batting with Matt Balch, and made the early running before falling to Luke Sharp for 24 with the score on 42 in the eleventh over.

Skipper Ed Stolle was lbw in Sharp’s next over. Tight bowling kept Balch and Chathli down to 24 runs in eight overs before Chathli was bowled for ten.

At 72-3 after 21 overs Dulwich were well behind the rate, but Waqar changed that with a commanding innings of 69 off just 35 balls. He added exactly 100 for the fourth wicket with Balch in 11.4 overs

before being caught on the boundary off McCabe. Balch fell one run later, having held the innings together with a patient 54 off 99 balls.

Ellison, who had earlier retired with blurred vision after just one ball, recovered to smash 37 off 20 balls in a stand of 46 in five overs for the sixth wicket with Assan Crawford-Khan. Ellison’s dismissal to McCabe in the 39th over was followed by the run out of Crawford-Khan in the 40th and the wickets of both Munawar and George to McCabe in the 41st.

Dulwich had lost four wickets for eight runs as they declined to 227-9 after 41 overs.

With 87 runs needed off nine overs the

match seemed as good as over. But Lodwick, who had amassed just four singles at this point, now treated McCabe with due respect while launching an assault at the other end, taking full advantage of the short-off side boundary.

He was given vital support by Isaac, who gave him the strike when he could and defended resolutely when he had to.

Sharp, who had taken 2-26 in his first seven overs, was recalled to try and finish it off but was hit for 35 in three overs.

Dominic Evans conceded fifteen off the 48th to leave 20 required off the last two.

But McCabe gave away just four runs off the 49th to leave sixteen needed off Evans in the final over.

Isaac took a single off the first ball, Lodwick hit the next two for six, and followed up with a two and a single to reach the target with one ball to spare. He had scored 78 out of the last wicket stand of 87, and finished with 82 not out off just 40 balls, with six fours and seven sixes.

This remarkable victory capped a magical day. The match was originally scheduled for last season as part of the club’s 150th anniversary celebrations, but was scuppered by the weather.

Dulwich were grateful to their hosts for rearranging it for this season. It will have left a lasting memory for the players and officials, and the increasingly vociferous supporters who came along to watch it.

“I felt we worked hard throughout the game. The first half again they had to learn a new tempo similar to the levels that we have already experienced against Charlton and Lewes. I felt we came out in the second half and our shape out of possession was better.

“It is frustrating that we concede from a set-piece with five minutes to go in the second half because the girls deserved to finish the second half without conceding.

“We have got two sixteen-year-olds in our starting XI and other seventeen and eighteen-year-olds, so they are going to learn from playing against top-class international players.

“I feel like [the defence] dealt with a lot that was thrown at them. You had

Jane Ross who was leading the line for Man City last season in the Champions League and now she’s come to West Ham.” The Lionesses have started slowly in all three of their opening matches and have conceded goals from individual defensive errors, but Phillips insisted that the team will continue trying to play out from the back.

“It’s a philosophy of mine and that’s how we want to play football,” he continued. “The girls have got to learn and they have to learn quickly but unless I keep encouraging them to do it they are not going to learn.”

Powell started the game as part of a back three after playing at full-back and in the centre of midfield for the Lions in previous matches, and the versatile

player was brutally honest in her postmatch evaluation.

She said: “First half, I don’t think that is a performance we can be proud of. In the second half, we dug in and it was a shame to let that fourth goal in at the end.

“But we were a lot better in the second half. “[Sunday] is forgotten about now and Wednesday is a league game, so that is where our focus has to be straight up until then.”

CHRIS PHILLIPS believes that facing “top-class international players” will give his youthful side the experience they need to improve after Millwall Lionesses lost 4-0 to West Ham United Women in the FA Continental Cup last Sunday.

West Ham opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Esmee De Gaaf fired home after a Jane Ross header had been saved by goalkeeper Chloe Sansom.

Three minutes later, West Ham doubled their lead when Yelena Priest headed only as far as Brianna Visalli, who sent the ball flying into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Millwall Premier League Kicks Summer 2018

A

s always, it’s been a busy summer for the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme with activities for young people running across the two boroughs of Southwark and Lewisham. The Millwall Premier League Programme is a free youth engagement programme that attempts to use the power and draw of football to engage and educate young people aged between 8-19.

The summer kicked off with a bang with the programme hosting the second leg of the projects graduation match on Wednesday 23rd of May 2018. Over a period of ten years the successful community development inclusion programme has seen many of its participants progress into professional and semi-professional football, football coaches, youth mentors and project management.

The celebratory match took place St Paul’s Sports Ground in Rotherhithe. Two quickfire goals from Deshane Dalling and a penalty from Diallang Jaiyesimi put the second-generation team 2-0 up against their older peers. A few minutes into the second half the first gen outfit pulled a well taken goal back through former Millwall central midfielders Jack Sammoutis, now at Hythe Town.

As the first gen side pushed forward for the equaliser the 2nd gen team took advantage of the

space left by their opposition pushing forward. Winger Dalling sprinted down the vacated left side and delivered an inch perfect low cross for Koroma to tuck home to make it 3-1 to the secondgeneration side. However, Koroma was booked for a second booking after taking off his shirt for celebrating. Millwall Premier League Kicks coach and midfielder Hassan Ibrahim slotted home a penalty to make it 3-2 and game on. Five minutes later patient build up which included ten passes in and around the 1st gens penalty area saw the ball slipped into Ansah who calmly finished to make it 3-3 and send the crowd into hysteria. With the 2nd gen side on the back foot and not much time left on the clock the ball broke to 2nd gen midfielder Vidal on the edge of the box who fired a low, powerful shoot into the bottom corner and seal a shocking 4-3 win.

When asked about the impact that Kicks has had on his life local boy and central midfielder and winger Diallang Jaiyesimi said: “Coming to Millwall Kicks has

helped me massively. It provided a place where I wouldn’t get distracted on Friday night and be doing unproductive things with my life. Kicks gave me the opportunity to play free football and take part in tournaments across the country which I enjoyed. The coaches provide us all with guidance when you needed it. It’s like a second home.”

August saw the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme host four free football tournaments for young people aged 12-15 and 16-19 with two taking place at the Bellingham Leisure and Lifestyle Centre in Catford, Lewisham and the other two taking place at the St Pauls Sports Ground in Rotherhithe, Southwark. In all the four tournaments engaged over 250 young people from across London including Arsenal in the Community who brought over young people from their Kicks programme. A young person that attended the 1215 age group tournament at the St Pauls Sports ground commented: “the tournament was really fun.

Even though there were around 20

teams that entered it was well run and the games were competitive.

The chance to play in a football stadium as nice as St Pauls was good too.”

This summer also see female students from Boston in American spend a week in London with Millwall. Youth Futures International is dedicated to creating and providing opportunities for young people to maximise their potential.

The action-packed week included training with the Millwall Lionesses team, visit and train at the Millwall Premier League Kicks girls only session in Bellingham and volunteer as coaches at Millwall Community Trust’s soccer schools at the Lions Centre. The group also visited some City of London attractions including a pre-season Millwall Lionesses friendly and see Millwall’s opening league fixture versus Middlesbrough.

To close the summer the Millwall Kicks programme happily accepted an invitation from Tottenham Hotspur Foundation to attend their annual Godwin Lawson Memorial Cup competition in memory of the

budding young footballer who was fatally stabbed in Stamford Hill eight years ago, as he tried to help friends during a street attack. After his death Godwin’s mother, Yvonne, established the Godwin Lawson Foundation to commemorate her son’s life and educate young people about the consequences of gun crime and street violence. Over 80 teenagers representing clubs from across London took part in the five-a-side tournament including young people from the Honor Oak Millwall Kicks session in partnership with Sport Active coaching in Brockley who had the chance to meet premier league footballer Luke Amos. Luke said: “Growing up, I was lucky enough to have lots of opportunities to play football and stay away from any potential trouble. Tournaments such as these are a fantastic way to use the power of sport to engage youngsters and make them aware of the dangers of knife crime and gang culture, helping them to keep safe.”

Millwall Community Trust will continue provide a wide range of weekly football sessions across the boroughs of Southwark and Lewisham under the Premier League Kicks programme.

IF THERE was an image last Saturday that said normal service was resumed at The Den, it was the sight of one of world football’s most renowned managers, who has influenced the creative vision of Pep Guardiola, barging angrily into the Millwall technical area to confront Dave Livermore.

Millwall had succeeded in getting under the skin of Marcelo Bielsa to such an extent that he leapt up – presumably from his regular vantage point sitting atop a plastic tub – to jab a finger angrily towards the Lions assistant manager, whom he felt had been involved in not letting Leeds get the ball back quickly enough to take a throw-in.

As if it wasn’t intense enough at that point, at an almost-packed-out Den, most of whom didn’t need much invitation to get to their feet to roar support for their team, the temperature was turned up further.

trying to win for the first time in four league games and Leeds protecting their unbeaten Championship record this season.

Bielsa might be ‘El Loco’ but Livermore is ‘El Calmo’, if we were to designate him a Spanish moniker.

Livermore is responsible for a lot of tactical work, and Millwall had mostly succeeded in playing the game on their terms. That is, earning corners, free-kicks and throw-ins to test their opponents’ aerial resolve and heart for the battle, and also breaking up the visitors’ play.

To Leeds’ credit they showed they did have that heart, but more pertinently for home supporters their side lived up to Neil Harris’ assertion that he had “got his squad back” during the international break, that the spirit was back.

Leeds centre-back Liam Cooper had claimed before the contest that Bielsa’s side were the fittest in the league, and anyone who had seen them this season would certainly have noted a team playing with much more pace, and that had only conceded one goal from play in the second half of Championship games under the Argentine.

But one of Millwall’s strengths is their

physical conditioning, led by the head of performance, Laurence Bloom. Millwall generally have much less possession than their opponents, and that was the case again last weekend when the home side’s share was less than 40 per cent. When the other team have the ball it means more running to close off passing avenues and to track runs.

Millwall knew when Samuel Saiz had the ball they had to be extra vigilant to spot runners. Saiz is his side’s main creative force, but the Lions’ work ethic ensured they limited his impact. Once before the break left wing-back Barry Douglas escaped in behind to find Tyler Roberts, whose shot was going in before the intervention of Murray Wallace.

Lone striker Roberts had another opportunity right on half-time, but this time Ben Amos prevented his side falling behind.

Leeds had already torn apart Stoke and Derby County this season by players getting between the oppositions’ defensive lines with rapid movement into space where the ball was moved forward quickly to find them. So Millwall had to work hard to deny them.

performance, playing off a crowd that is always wound up just seeing the white shirts on their patch.

Ten minutes into the second half the home supporters in the 17,195 seasonhigh crowd were on their feet when Jed Wallace arrived at the back post to fire home after Jake Cooper had headed on Ryan Leonard’s long throw-in. Wallace celebrated exuberantly, the suspicions that Middlesbrough’s bid for him during the transfer window had unsettled him finally put to bed.

Leonard could be very satisfied with his performance, given how little he had played since last January. If ever there was going to be a test of fitness this was it, and one driving run through the middle of the pitch at Leeds’ defence showed he will be an attacking force. Late on, he still had the energy to track back to win possession in midfield. Early days, but that portion of the George Saville fee appears to have been wisely spent.

It was just a pity the hosts couldn’t hang on for a major win.

After the fracas involving the benches, a long ball forward was headed out by Cooper to Jack Harrison 30 yards out.

There were plenty of blue-shirted defenders in front of him as he took aim and whipped in a low shot that evaded all of them before finding the bottom corner.

Leeds’ celebrations weren’t exactly inhibited, as their bench and some of their players goaded the Millwall technical area.

There was a minute to go, five minutes of injury-time, and in that time Millwall created at least three more good opportunities to nick the win.

Substitute Tom Elliott, for the third league game in four, hit the post, Tom Bradshaw saw a shot blocked near the line, and finally goalscorer Wallace fired off target after the ball had sat up for him in the box.

The final whistle went and most eyes turned to the dugouts, and Harris went to strongly make a point to someone on the Leeds staff.

But Livermore, and coach Adam Barrett, encouraged him to go down the tunnel, and Bielsa later said, as the elder man, he bore responsibility.

There was a convivial conversation later between the managers, though no post-match drinks.

Lions fans could however toast a return to form for their side at The Den.

Attacker’s star continues to rise EXCLUSIVE

AIDEN O’BRIEN was never likely to swap his jersey after his international debut – but especially not after Roy Keane’s message to the team before the game.

O’Brien, 24, and his team-mates were gathered in their hotel in Wroclaw in Poland when Ireland assistant boss Keane impressed upon them the prestige of the shirt they had on their back.

It was a few days after losing 4-1 in Wales in a Nations League game, and O’Brien was close to fulfilling a life-long ambition.

A few hours later, he was savouring not only achieving that but reflecting on his first international goal that brought his side to within three minutes of a morale-boosting win for Martin O’Neill’s side before Poland equalised.

And there was no way O’Brien was going to give up his own personal memento for a Polish one.

“I kept that first one,” he said, “but maybe in the future I’ll start swapping jerseys if I get the chance. A few of my family and friends tuned in to watch it on Sky, so I got loads of messages after the game.

“I’ve been there a few times now and Roy has been nothing but a legend. He’s been great with me. I used to watch him on TV and he used to kick everyone up in the air.

It’s funny to be in and around him now.

“He still has that winning mentality. Before the Poland game he came up to all of us and said: ‘Boys, I just want you to do one thing today. Enjoy wearing the Ireland jersey.

Embrace it, because these are the best days of our life. Be proud.’

“And that’s what we did, we all went out there and we should have beaten a good Poland side, but they scored in the last few minutes.

“I wanted to take my chance and embrace it. It’s what I’ve been waiting to do all my life, play for the green jersey.

“When I scored the boys were like, ‘are you crying?’ They were all laughing. I wasn’t crying, but I was really emotional. Maybe another minute more celebrating I might have cried. It was a moment for me and my family I will cherish forever.

“For Millwall, for Ireland, whatever team you play for, if you lose heavily the game before then you talk about it, look at the mistakes you made individually and collectively and then you move on from it.

You’ve got another game coming shortly.

“We couldn’t dwell on the Wales defeat, we just had to make sure whoever was playing

against Poland put in a solid performance and that we got a result, which we did.”

One of the most contentious issues in Ireland recently has been the decision of West Ham’s Declan Rice to reconsider his international future despite having three caps for the country where his grandparents were born.

Rice grew up in Kingston-upon-Thames, but he made his Ireland debut in a friendly against Turkey.

Under the rules for international football, he can still declare for the country of his birth as he hasn’t played in a competitive game for Ireland. He pulled out of the squad before the Wales game.

O’Brien has similar national identities, born in London and growing up in Islington, but with Irish-born grandparents and an Irishborn mother, Sandra.

His dad, Dave, is English, but O’Brien was never in doubt which country he wanted to play for.

“Everyone’s got different backgrounds, everyone’s got different ways of thinking. I can’t sit here and talk about Declan Rice or what he’s going through or wants,” O’Brien reflected. “His family might be influencing him, I don’t know anything about that.

“You can be English and play for Ireland.

There have been a lot of English players who have played for Ireland and did well over the years.

“It doesn’t mean if you don’t have the accent you’re not Irish. I’ve got loads of family who were born there and have always supported Ireland. Just because I was born in England doesn’t mean I’m not Irish.

“That goes for Declan, for Callum O’Dowda (who was born in Oxford), lots of players.

“The question about Declan, I don’t know where he sees his future lying. But hopefully he can make a decision and everyone can move forward.

“My nan and grandad were fully Irish. That rubbed off on me because you have my grandparents cooking the Irish stew and playing the Irish tunes. It just gets into you when you are young, me and my sister [Lisa]. My mum’s a massive Paddy!

“My dad was the only one that wasn’t.

“I had the choice when I was sixteen or seventeen to play for England or Ireland. But it was never really a choice, it was always about Ireland. That’s who I wanted to play for, it never really crossed my mind to do anything different.”

After his successful Ireland stint, O’Brien returned to the day job last week to put in one of his best performances of the season, in the 1-1 draw with Leeds.

He feels Millwall are on the right path after a wobble in the early part of the season, but

acknowledges they have to stop conceding late goals, with Jack Harrison’s strike for Leeds the sixth time an opponent has scored in the last seventeen minutes of a game at The Den this season.

“It’s

back to business as usual,” O’Brien said.

“We are putting everything we can into trying to get results and if the manager picks you at the weekend you put 100 per cent in and give your all no matter what.

“It was a kick in the teeth not winning those games against Swansea, Middlesbrough, but the performances have been there for most of the season.

“We need to take the positives out of performances like that.

“We need to start picking up more three points from games, the performances are there. We need to get wins like we did last season no matter how it happens, grind them out. As soon as we start doing that on a regular basis we will push ourselves up the table.

“We’re not scared of anyone. The big boys who have come to play us at The Den this season, we’ve outplayed them, like going two up against Middlesbrough, the favourites to win the league, but we got sloppy in the last ten minutes.

“We’ve conceded some late goals in games so we need to work hard to make sure we stop doing that.”

If O’Brien continues to show an attitude like that and backs it up with performances, he is likely to get more chances to pick up some foreign souvenirs in the near future.

“I take it game by game. I come to the training ground with a smile on my face to meet the boys. We’re all blessed, we’re all in a game that a lot of kids are fighting to be involved in.

“We should all train and play with a smile and give everything we can. In a few years you’re retiring.

“If the [Ireland] manager picks me for the next camp, then he picks me. I’ll be ready like I was against Poland. I’ll always be ready to go out there and do the best I can.”

SHAUN WILLIAMS admits he owes a “great deal of gratitude” to Millwall manager Neil Harris after scoring on his competitive debut for his country during the recent international break.

Williams, who will be 32 next month, became one of the oldest players to make his Republic of Ireland debut when he came on as a substitute against France in a friendly in June.

He followed that up with his competitive bow against Wales in the Nations League, coming on in the 56th minute when Martin O’Neill’s side were 4-0 down, before he robbed Aaron Ramsey of possession and ran through to chip delightfully over goalkeeper Wayne Hennessy.

Williams then earned praise from Irish fans and media for his performance anchoring the midfield on his first start against Poland, when Aiden O’Brien put the side ahead before they were pegged back late on.

Harris didn’t sign Williams and the midfielder wasn’t a regular in the Millwall team until the current manager’s second full season in charge, which ended with promotion to the Championship in 2016-17.

Ultimately, playing in the second tier brought him into consideration again for international honours.

“It was an amazing moment for me and my family to make my debut, I’m still on cloud nine from it. It was disappointing to lose but on a personal note to score for my country is a dream come true,” Williams said.

“I like to do all the shooting sessions here with the gaffer and luckily I was ready to take the chance when it came.

“The gaffer here is up there with the best I’ve played under. I’ve played under him since he’s been manager here and I couldn’t say a bad word about him as a manager and a person as well.

“I owe him a great deal of gratitude for the opportunities he’s given me and hopefully I can keep repaying him.

“The Ireland jerseys will be going in a frame, I got the one against Poland signed by all the team.

“I didn’t get nervous at all because I think there are a lot worse things that can happen to you in life than just going out to play football.

“Playing at The Den on a Saturday has steered me in the right direction, because if you can do well there then playing anywhere else is alright.”

Williams’ role for Ireland against Poland was slightly different to what he is used to, playing in a three rather than the two under Harris for Millwall.

a great job. I can only speak from my own experience. I’ve really enjoyed it and embraced every day I was there because I know it’s not a long career and you have to make the most of it when you can.”

Williams and O’Brien arrived back at Calmont Road last week in high spirits, to a squad that was also in positive form and feeling settled after the closure of the transfer window.

Williams also revealed he could have been ruled out for Millwall through injury.

“It was a disappointing week before we left so to come back and see everyone upbeat was great,” Williams said. “And obviously me and Aiden were on top of the world after the ten days we had, so everything fell into place.

“When I came back I had to do a fitness test on Saturday and luckily enough I was able to make it through.

“We needed a performance and Leeds at home was ideal. We were disappointed to concede late again at home but overall we were really at it.

“There’s no better feeling than playing games and it’s going to be an intense period before the next international break [in mid-October].”

Williams had a new midfield partner against Leeds after the signing of Ryan Leonard from Sheffield United to replace George Saville.

Williams played down the loss of Saville to Middlesbrough, feeling Leonard and Jem Karacan have strengthened the squad.

And the Irish international was on hand to offer Leonard words of encouragement before his Lions debut.

“Ryan’s was a fantastic debut,” Williams said. “I said to him before the game, ‘no better debut to have than Leeds at home’.

If he can perform like that every week he’ll be a fans favourite and do well for us.

“I spoke to [Saville, when he was linked with Boro] but it didn’t really bother me, people come and go every day. I wish him all the best and hope he does well for his new team. Luckily now we have Ryan to replace George and we have other players who can play a similar role.

“Jem is a great fella to have in the dressing room as well. He’s played at a high level and he’s another good addition to the team.”

Millwall play three more times before the next international break, when Ireland face Denmark and Wales at home in their next Nations League games.

Williams should be involved, but isn’t letting whether another call-up comes along concern him.

“You just have to do what you can with your club to be considered, and as I’ve said already I’m just on a high. If it happens it happens and if it doesn’t, so be it.

“I really enjoyed my time with them and hopefully I’ve done enough to stay in the squad.”

Irish international adds another string to his bow

AIDEN O’BRIEN has put down a marker to be the Lions front man after showing he can be a lone star for Ireland – and his versatility could be invaluable to Millwall this season.

O’Brien played up front on his own when he made his Republic of Ireland debut against Poland last week.

He scored the opener in the 1-1 friendly draw, and earned the praise of Ireland boss Martin O’Neill, who said: “I thought Aiden O’Brien was terrific for a debut. We knew what we’d get in terms of effort from him.

“He hasn’t played centre-forward for a long time – he plays left midfield. But he attempted to hold it up for us and gave us strength and brought others in.”

O’Brien scored five goals in ten games for the Ireland under-21s, most of the time leading the line on his own.

Millwall have a wealth of attacking options, but with Steve Morison likely to play fewer games this season, a door could open for O’Brien.

“Underage I played up front for Ireland every game, I was never a midfielder,” O’Brien said.

“I’ve always scored goals as well. I expect to go there now and play as a forward. If they want me to play anywhere else, like I’ve done for

Millwall, I can do it and you can see I can do it.

“It’s good to have that kind of versatility, you’re not just set on only playing one position. I can play up front, left, right, in behind.

“I was happy to be named as a lone striker for my first game, I knew that was where I belonged for Ireland. I rewarded them with a goal so hopefully I can show again what I can do in the upcoming international games.”

Meanwhile, Millwall travel to The Hawthorns this Saturday to take on

Darren Moore’s West Brom.

Moore took over with six Premier League games left last season with the Baggies ten points adrift of safety.

He almost pulled off the impossible, bringing his side to within two points of safety with a game to go, before Southampton won their penultimate game to send them down.

Lions boss Neil Harris said: “Darren has done unbelievably well since taking over. The impact he made was instant and what he did was almost miraculous.

“They have started really strongly, and they’re still adjusting with Premier League players being back to Championship level. They have a hugely talented squad and some huge individual capabilities as well.

“They are a big, strong side that we know are going to be a force at The Hawthorns all season.

“Darren deserved his chance there, he played for the club for a long time, worked there as a coach and knows what is required. I certainly look forward to seeing him on Saturday.”

Elliott’s last goal in South Bermondsey was more than a year ago, in a 4-3 defeat to Ipswich, which made it three goals in his first three games on home turf for the club.

Former AFC Wimbledon forward Elliott could get his chance in next week’s EFL Cup third-round clash against Fulham to end a run of thirteen games without a goal at home.

Elliott has hit the post twice from injury-time headers in his last two games at The Den, against Swansea and his former side Leeds United last Saturday.

Lions boss Harris believes it is also up to Elliott’s team-mates to keep creating chances for the 6ft 4ins target man.

After this Saturday when Millwall are away at West Brom, they play two successive home games, against the Cottagers and Sheffield United.

Harris said: “He’s a centre-forward who’s capable of scoring goals, especially from crosses. We’ve seen his aerial ability time and time again.

“Especially late in games we’ve got to be able to get the ball in the box to feed him chances. It’s [two home] games where he’s hit the post and he’s coming on and making an impact.

“When it’s going for you the ball hits anything and goes in, when it’s not going for you it hits the post and rebounds into the goalkeeper’s hands.

“He’s got to keep working hard and it will happen for him.”
