Be a life-saver, like NHS worker Kate

HS WORKER Kate Hatherell went on to save lives after she died.

The 31-year-old was an NHS worker at King’s College Hospital in Camberwell, but died after an asthma attack she suffered while out with her friends.

But Kate went on to save the lives of four people after she died because she donated her organs, including her heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas. Her mother Nicky said: "She died as she lived – by giving generously.

“Before working at King’s, she worked with me at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and she saw many people she came to think of as friends die waiting for transplants.

“We knew that she would have wanted to give her organs and were proud to discover that she had registered herself as a donor.”

Kate joined the organ donation register at the age of seventeen. After the attack she was cared for in King’s Intensive Care Unit. Her mother Kate praised her friends and colleagues - the ‘almost 100 people’, from top management to consultants and ‘right down through the ranks’ who went to her bedside.

This week the NHS launched national Organ Donation Week to encourage people to talk to their families to increase the number of organ donations. Nationally, three people die every day in need of an organ and there are around 1,255 Londoners on the transplant waiting list.

Most people don’t really want to think about death, let alone talk about it with their family.

And many families, understandably, don’t want to imagine what happens to their loved one’s body after death. But we hope reading this story will make the need to be having this conversation clear. Organ donation can be literally life-saving.

Hugh Grant and James Corden’s works to be sold in initiative

A DULWICH school is selling off artworks made by famous names, including Hugh Grant, James Corden and even Jeremy Corbyn, to raise money for its art department.

The Charter School in Red Post Hill, North Dulwich is hoping to raise £20,000 for the department by selling 500 tickets corresponding to art pieces.

The school said it needed the money from the ‘Secret Charter’ exhibition because of £1million cuts from Government.

The event will take place on October 15 at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, hosted by actor James Nesbitt.

Buying a £40 voucher gets you entered into a lucky dip for one of the artworks, which will be randomly assigned by a computer programme.

The concept was devised by parent Laura Stephens and the money raised will go to refurbishing the art department’s dark room, along with support for the music and drama departments.

Thirty of the school’s best art students will also have the chance to be displayed alongside the worldfamous artists at the event.

Ms Stephens said: “We’re delighted to have the contributions from such internationally acclaimed artists, designers, illustrators, fashion designers and celebrities.

“Their support will raise the profile of the cause, which is to highlight the issue of funding cuts to the Arts in education, and of course raise as much money as possible for The Charter School’s Art department.”

She added that it was “a wonderful opportunity for our students to have their work shown at such a prestigious venue alongside world famous artists.”

Headteacher Christian Hicks said: “We have a fantastically enthusiastic and active parent body and Secret Charter is another example of how creative they are when it comes to raising much needed funds to support the school, especially at the moment when, like all schools, our budgets are being squeezed and our financial situation is difficult.

“This event will help to ensure that all our pupils continue to enjoy a wide and varied arts curriculum at the school.”

Burnt dog found on bus appeal A RE-HOMING appeal has been launched for a burnt dog who was abandoned on a bus.

Staffie Chelsea, ten, was taken to Battersea Cats and Dogs Home after being found on a Bromley Road, Bellingham, bus, with large shoulder scarring thought to be from burns.

Now Battersea staff have appealed for a loving family to take Chelsea into their home.

Battersea’s Rehoming and Welfare Manager Rebecca MacIver said: “Although we know nothing about Chelsea’s history, it would be fair to say that this smiley Staffie hasn’t had the best luck so far.

“For this lovely girl to be brought into Battersea after being stranded on a bus is really unfortunate; especially as she’s an older dog.”

The manager added that the poor pup has “found kennels to be quite stressful” so it’s hoped that she’s rehomed soon.

MacIver said: “She’s a very people orientated dog, and would love nothing more than to live out her twilight years surrounded by a new and loving family to call her own.”

...and Luna would be over the moon to find a family

TWELVE-MONTH-old Luna, who can be destructive when left alone - even for a short time - is desperate for a family.

This mongrel bitch is a bundle of energy, but has a sweet nature and is eager to please.

Battersea Dogs Home has put out an appeal in the hope that someone will come forward and be up for training Luna.

It said in its appeal: "Luna will need owners that can commit to ongoing training as she has little in the way of life skills. She has a sweet nature and is eager to please, having responded really well to any training our staff have offered her so far. She is highly motivated for food and this can help make training fun and rewarding. In her previous home Luna had some separation anxiety and could be destructive when left, even for short periods of time. New owners must be prepared to work on this and understand that this could take a while so initially Luna will need to be with a family where someone is at home all day."

REPORTS OF a series of attempted robberies by Ofo-riding bike gangs in Peckham and East Dulwich have left cyclists and commuters fearing for their safety.

One resident has told how he was ‘accosted’ by three men on September 9 - two on bikes and one on foot- on Goodrich Road, near the junction with Upland Road, and was only prevented from being harmed after they were distracted by a motorist.

They are believed to have been aged between eighteen and 23-years – with one riding a ‘beaten up yellow hire bike’.

Posting on the East Dulwich forum website, the resident said: “Last night about, 9.30pm I was accosted by three black men, two on bikes and one on foot, on Goodrich Road, passing the Upland Road junction.

“They were about to rob me.

“They pulled their hoods up, were signalling to each other, the guy on foot jumped on the front handlebar and was coming for my bag.

“I flagged down a car driving motorist who drove straight pass me and refused to stop and help. The robbers, were distracted and peddled away.

“It was a very near miss. Please be very careful.” The post prompted other locals to share similar attacks they had witnessed.

A series of attempted robberies by gangs on the yellow bikes have been reported across social media

off his bike, which was then stolen, by three youths in broad daylight on the corner of Lordship Lane and Evelyna Road.

A witness wrote: “Lived in London since ‘93 and never seen anything like it.

Lawless,” going on to confirm: “It started on Lordship Lane, I saw them when coming out of Hanush and walked straight in to the situation. “They chased him and pushed him off just past the library.

“Guy was ok I think, called in to the police, he went off with the police when they arrived, probably to try and track them down.

“The youths went off down Woodwarde Road with his bike after pushing him.

“A shop owner also came along and mentioned they might have taken something from his shop on Lordship

lane.”

And on August 26, a teenage male on an Ofo bike was seen cycling down East Dulwich road trying to steal phoned out of people’s hands.

The News understands several muggings have taken place on the Surrey Canal cycling path through Peckham and Burgess Park.

Another resident has told of being corned near Peckham Library by a youth on a yellow hire bike swerving rapidly in front of his way, before doing the same manoeuvre in front of his wife’s bike as if to force them both off.

“When I looked back he had several mates with him waiting on the side lines, presumably to grab the bike of anyone who does fall.

“Bloody brazen in broad daylight.

“I did call the police and they promised to send a car, but I think they saw me

calling and will doubtless be long gone before anyone gets there.”

It is believed the bikes, which require users to register with an app, can be stolen easily by being hacked, or having the lock broken off.

Southwark Police was unable to confirm before the News’ print deadline whether it was investigating a rise in thefts and robberies involving the dockless bikes.

London Councils, the local authority umbrella group, does not hold data on reported crimes, but a spokesperson said it was working with TfL to develop a bylaw and ‘pan-London approach’ to help boroughs manage dockless cycle hire schemes, in an effort to reduce street clutter and abandoned bicycles on private property and improve road safety.

A TfL spokesperson confirmed: “We’re working hard to make cycling easier and more accessible across London, so we welcome the growth in dockless cycle hire schemes, as well as growth for our own popular Santander Cycles.

“However, it is vital that dockless operators work closely with us and the boroughs to ensure their schemes are safely and responsibly managed, so we can avoid the disruptive and dangerous clutter of abandoned bikes that we have seen in some cities around the world.

When contacted by the News, an Ofo spokesperson said it had not received ‘any recent complaints regarding such activities’.

“We actively work with the police where issues of theft, privatisation or misuse of Ofo bikes arise,” a spokesperson said.

BREAKING NEWS: Bricklayers Arms will not get a tube station

TFL TODAY announced further plans for the Bakerloo Line extension – but Southwark residents won’t be getting a new station at the Bricklayers Arms.

Southwark and Lewisham councils joined forces last week to back the Bakerloo Line extension, including a station on the Bricklayers Arms site, the junction between Tower Bridge road and the Old Kent Road.

Multiple residents’ groups held a public rally in support of a station at Bricklayers Arms roundabout last year. However, the station has not been included in TFL’s final plan, because of “its close proximity to the existing Elephant & Castle and Borough Tube stations.”

TFL added: “The proposal for an additional station would also considerably increase the overall cost of the extension as well as make journey times longer.

“The proposed two stations on the Old Kent Road were carefully selected to maximize growth in jobs and homes to support plans for redevelopment in the area. One of the proposed two Old Kent Road stations is likely to be built on the junction with Dunton Road and Humphrey Street.

‘Station 2’ is mooted to be placed on the former Toys R Us site near the junction with Asylum Road.

Plans are also being developed to move the Bakerloo Line platform at Elephant and Castle to provide an easier interchange for passengers and reduce crowding.

Latwaan laid to rest but family still appeal for witnesses to his murder

THE FUNERAL of murdered drill rapper Latwaan Griffiths was held in Streatham on Monday, as his family continue to appeal for information to find his killer.

The service was held at South London Crematorium in Streatham, with mourners asked to wear red/blue clothes and a eulogy given by his mother.

A wake was held the same afternoon and early evening at the Southbank Community Centre in Waterloo.

The eighteen-year-old was found with knife wounds in Camberwell at 6.55pm on Wednesday July 25, after being left by a moped rider on Denmark Street.

Police believe he was attacked in Loughborough Junction, in 'the area of Elmore House and Minet Road'.

His family has pleaded for peace, and for witnesses to come forward, saying that until people are willing to share information.

In a statement released by police, the family said: “The wall of silence continues to be reinforced in our communities.

“Latwaan Griffiths, our loved one was stabbed to his death in the early evening of 25.07.2018, in circumstances that are yet to be known.

“We know that you know something that can help us put the pieces together.”

The Met has released an image of the moped rider who left him in Camberwell and left flyers around the area to try and encourage witnesses to come forward.

But as yet, no one has been charged with his murder.

In their statement Latwaan’s family said they wanted peace, adding that until people come forward, "there is nothing stopping you from being the next victim of a knife or gun crime".

“We want the speculation to end, we want the violence to end, we want justice, but we also need peace,” they said.

“We as a family are broken, we are riddled with heartache, we will never be the same.

“We want to put Latwaan to rest, but we cannot do that unless you help us with this murder inquiry.”

“We know that nothing we do collectively as a family or community can bring Latwaan back to life,” said the family, “but what we do know is that his murderer is still out there, and there is nothing stopping you from being the next victim of a knife or gun crime.”

SOUTHWARK HAS the second highest number of recorded murders out of all the London boroughs so far this year according to a new analysis.

The analysis of the Met’s homicide data, conducted by the Press Association, reveals that police have logged seven Southwark murders – second only to Haringey.

Eight murders have been recorded by police in Haringey, while none have been registered in Sutton and Bexley up until September 6.

The numbers take the total London murder rate to 100 for the year, following an arson attack on a 40year-old woman in Woolwich, south London on Thursday morning.

The victims are mostly young with the highest proportion of murders recorded in the 16-24 age group and four for children aged fifteen and under.

Among those four are 15-year-old Rhyhiem Barton, who was fatally shot while playing football with his friends in Warham Street, Camberwell, on May 5.

CALLS FOR WEAPONS BIN IN CAMBERWELL

THE CHAIR of Camberwell Green's safer neighbourhood ward panel is petitioning for a new weapons bin to be installed in Camberwell Green to combat the growing number of fatal stabbings.

Currently there are weapons bins at Sainsbury's on Dog Kennel Hill, Manor Place in Walworth, and outside Herne Hill Baptist church on Half Moon Lane.

Mark Webb told the News he has requested that police install a weapons bin in the area after a series of highprofile stabbings and on-going violent crimewave, and has petitioned the council for support.

He said: "Tens of thousands of blades, knives, offensive weapons, firearms and ammo have been placed in weapons bins all over the UK in the last few years.

"Thousands of violent crimes have been avoided in the process.

"Mums and dads find the knives in their son's bedroom and want to bin them safely, teens who have been

carrying are subject to peer pressure and they bin, we have heard of school kids who have been given knives for protection binning them. You can't ask people to 'Bin that Blade' unless you provide a bin."

Police advise anyone who wants to dispose of a knife safely to wrap or secure it safely and seal with sticky tape.

On the way to a knife bin, you should plan your route carefully and avoid areas where well known gangs may be.

It may be safer to take the knife during the daytime.

A council spokesperson said: “It is great to see local communities joining forces to help tackle knife crime in our borough and we would support any residents that wanted to take steps to improve safety in their community.”

Southwark Police were unable to respond before the News went to press.

PECKHAM STORE LEADS THE WAY ON KNIFE BAN

MORRISONS HAVE stopped selling knives in several inner city stores after the News reported on the Peckham manager who first implemented the policy.

The supermarket chain rolled-out the restriction in a bid to tackle the numbers of knives that were being shoplifted by schoolchildren.

The idea was first put in place by the former manager of Peckham’s Rye Lane store, James Gore, as reported by the News in December last year.

The manager, who has since moved to another in store in Yorkshire said: “We had a full range of knives out but often found they were getting stolen, especially by school kids first thing in the morning as soon as we opened. “When you come in and see what’s happening you’ve got a choice: you can remove the knives from sale, you can tag them, but that won’t stop the theft, and you can have challenge 25, but that doesn’t make much difference with theft. Obviously it wasn’t a great scene of what potentially could happen with those knives, so I made the decision to remove the entire range and that was not long after being here.”

“Hopefully if it stops one child taking a knife to school then I think it’s a positive thing.”

A Morrison’s spokesperson declined to name or to number the stores affected by the new anti-knife policy saying it was “operationally confidential information.”

However they added that the positive reaction from the community to the Peckham superstore’s policy “is what’s behind this second round of knife restrictions.”

Danny O’Brien of Anti-Knife UK, a national campaigning group of people affected by knife crime, praised the rollout. He said: “We’ve been campaigning for this for the last year and a half. It’s great that another big store has decided to bring their knives off-sale. I praise Morrison’s for doing it. I’m really pleased and I’m hoping that other stores will look into it.

“Stores can use a tag which they can buy at a cheap price which will save lives. But if they’re not selling knives, even better.”

Close Encounters of the Peckham kind A FREE screening of Stephen Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind will be held in Peckham’s Copelston Centre this evening, September 13.

The 1977 American science fiction thriller stars Richard Dreyfuss, Melinda Dillon, Teri Garr, Bon Balaban, Cary Guffey and Francois Truffaut and tells the story of Roy Neary, a blue-collar worker in Indiana whose life changes after his encounter with a UFO. The special screening is part of a series of events during the Copleston Centre's 40th anniversary, and coincides with the Peckham and Nunhead free film festival.

Doors will open at 7pm and the screening will begin at 8pm. Entry is free.

MORE TRAFFIC disruption is coming to Peckham next year if planned gas maintenance gets underway.

The News has been informed that SGN gas is planning on upgrading its network on Rye Lane from January 2019.

Residents fear the work could span months – and bring more travel disruption to an area full of tailbacks due to temporary traffic lights in place on Consort Road from August until the end of last week.

A spokesperson for the gas distribution company confirmed it was in consultation with Southwark Council to upgrade its gas network in

Rye Lane from January 2019, and would share the full details once the ‘planning process was complete’.

“We’re continuing discussions with Southwark Council about our network upgrades in Rye Lane. To minimise disruption to the local community, our project will be split into several phases.

“Traffic management will be planned accordingly for each section of work in consultation with the local authority.

“If we need to install temporary traffic lights or close roads to ensure everyone’s safety during our project, we will let local residents and businesses know in advance.

“Once we’ve finalised the planning process, we’ll be able to provide full details of our project and associated traffic management plans.”

THE MEMORIAL garden outside Walworth Town Hall has been reopened following a fire in 2013.

The green space along Walworth Road had been hidden behind hoarding that went up around the town hall following the blaze, preventing visitors to its WW2 memorial stone.

A Southwark Council and Walworth Society partnership – with support from Lendlease - have replanted the garden and moved the hoardings to allow visitors to the garden and memorial.

Cllr Johnson Situ, cabinet member for growth, development and planning, said: “I am very pleased that we have been able to bring this little haven of reflection and peace back into use for local people.”

It comes as three groups have been invited to submit ideas to revitalise the town hall.

Arts and Culture groups, Forge Partnership, General Projects and Milligan Creative Trade, have all been invited by the council to propose ideas for the space while maintaining public access.

Cllr Situ said he believed “the three we have chosen will offer a strong and sustainable option to bring this historic building back into use.”

He added: “I look forward to seeing their full proposals and ensuring this building is brought back in to use for the local community as soon as possible.”

The Grade II listed building, which was home to the Newington Library and Cuming Museum, has been empty since it was gutted by the fire five years ago.

AN NHS worker has continued saving lives even after her death – with her donated organs.

Kate Hatherell, who worked at King’s College Hospital in Camberwell, died from a fatal asthma attack aged 31 while out with her friends near her workplace.

Now her donated organs, including her heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas, have transformed the lives of four other people.

Kate’s mother, Nicky Hatherell, said: “Kate lived life to the full; she’s the only person we have ever known to be able to pack 25 hours into 24 on a regular basis!

"She died as she lived – by giving generously.

“Before working at King’s, she worked with me at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and she saw many people she came to think of as friends die waiting for transplants. We knew that she would have wanted to give her organs and were proud to discover that she had registered herself as a donor.”

She added: “It’s so important to tell your family about your wishes should you die, as they’re the ones who have to make the decision when it comes down to it.”

The NHS worker, who held a variety of roles including as a multidisciplinary team coordinator, joined the organ donation register at seventeen and her family knew she would have wanted to donate her organs to benefit the lives of those in need.

Kate was cared for at the Intensive Care Unit at King’s before she died.

Mum Nicky added: “We are so glad that she was in the vicinity of King’s when it happened.

“It meant that all her friends and colleagues at the hospital were able to say their goodbyes.

"It was such a privilege to see so many people trooping by her bedside - from top management and consultants right down through the ranks - almost 100 people.”

Last week the NHS launched the national Organ Donation Week campaign, which encourages people to talk to their families to increase the number of organ donors.

Nationally, three people die every day in need of an organ, and there are approximately 1,255 Londoners on the transplant waiting list.

Families are approached about donations if their loved one’s organs can save another’s life and having conversations about it beforehand can help families make the decision in a difficult time.

Currently around 2.6million people in London are on the NHS Organ Donor Register but families can refuse to

consent, even if the person is on the register – meaning willing donors should tell their families of their wishes beforehand.

Mark Whitehouse, a Specialist Nurse for Organ Donation at King’s who was involved in the organ donation process with Kate’s family, said: “We really need more people in London to have these conversations with their families and talk about organ donation, so that we can increase the number of lifesaving transplants.”

Dad pledges 171 mile walk after son saved from sepsis

A FATHER is raising money for St Thomas’ Hospital after a specialist team rushed all the way to Wales to save his son’s life.

Tom Boyce, a student at Cardiff University, referred himself to hospital in Wales after a bout of tiredness and breathlessness worsened overnight.

The last thing he remembers is being put in a wheelchair with an oxygen mask.

Pneumonia had led to sepsis, weakening Tom’s heart and lungs to an almost fatal extent.

When his parents, David and Cath, arrived at the hospital, they were told that Tom was unlikely to live through the night.

In a final attempt to save Tom’s life, the hospital contacted the specialist ECMO team at St Thomas’.

ECMO is a treatment that temporarily takes over the work of the heart and lungs, allowing the patient’s organs to recover.

The ECMO team came to Cardiff that night, connected Tom to the ECMO machine, and brought him back to St Thomas’.

A few weeks later Tom was

discharged. He is now on his way to a full recovery.

To raise money for the team that saved his son’s life, David Boyce will walk from the University Hospital Wales in Cardiff to St Thomas’, a distance of 171 miles.

Tom will walk alongside his father on the first and last days.

Mr. Boyce explained why he was inspired to do the walk: “I wanted to say thank you to the team and came up with the idea of the walk when Tom was in intensive care.

“We were overwhelmed by his wonderful care and felt very safe in the hands of the team.

“I would love to raise £10,000 to contribute to ECMO equipment, resources and training and hope this will help to save other peoples’ lives.”

Tom, now well enough to restart his degree, said: “I’m eternally grateful to the team at St Thomas’. I received unbelievable care - I couldn’t fault it.

“The whole experience has made me value people more, especially my family, and I’ll miss them when I go back to university.”

This charred crucifix is the only item left of church destroyed on first day of the Blitz

A CHARRED crucifix found in the ruins of a Rotherhithe church was at the centre of a Blitz commemoration ceremony last week – the only thing remaining from the original building after it was bombed.

Thursday’s ceremony at the Holy Trinity Rotherhithe remembered the effect of the bombing raid, which leveled the church and much of the surrounding area on September 7 1940, the first night of the Blitz.

The cross was returned to the church by a man who came to confess for ‘stealing’ it by finding it in the ruins as a boy.

Father Andrew Doyle, who has been at the Bryan Road church for twenty years, said: “One day a crucifix turned up, from a lady called Daisy Simmonds, but she wouldn't tell me who'd found it.

“One night a few weeks after that an old man turned up at the door to say he was the 'thief'.

“Because he thought the police were after him, so he said ‘I've come to confess, it was me I took your cross.’

“It took me ages to convince him he was my hero. He found it, kept it safe for all those years when no-one else would've done and he returned it.”

The cross was found by George Ray when he was playing in the ruins of the bombed out church as a kid The cross, returned by local George Ray, who has since passed away, is the only thing that survives of the original church.

Father Doyle said: “Odd I suppose that the first church to fall down on the first day of the Blitz and the first thing to come back to us was a really charred

“There must be candlesticks out in the community but we haven't seen any of those.”

The vicar explained: “The main painting at the back of the church is by a man called Hans Feibusch, a German Jew who managed to get out in 1936 and was looked after the country during the war years.

“He went around painting in the churches that had been destroyed.”

The painter completed around forty murals, including the one on the eastern wall at Holy Trinity, before his eyesight failed him.

Thursday’s ceremony has been a yearly event since 2002.

A NEW history festival is coming to Walworth this Saturday, September 15.

Hosted by the Walworth Society, the festival will celebrate the perks and quirks of Walworth’s history.

The week will include an array of different activities such as exhibitions, an animated tour and film screenings, including a film on Walworth’s 100-year-old Arments Pie & Mash shop.

There will also be an evening of talks on the work of former local historian Stephen Humphrey.

Mr Humphrey lived in Elephant and Castle all of his life and was bestowed the freedom of the borough award by Southwark Council back in 2012 for his research on the area. He passed away in late 2016.

The festival is a chance to celebrate

Walworth being named Heritage Action Zone last year by the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism, making Southwark the first inner London borough to receive the award.

Local history researcher Shelagh Farren said: “Have you ever considered how your granny lived compared to you, for example with her copper and mangle versus an automatic washing machine?

“How your relatives managed as immigrants, not speaking the language.

“Who planted parks and why? How did anyone communicate before mobile phones?

“History is all around us, and it can be fascinating finding it out. It is fun to do and fun to see people's reaction when they discover something about their local community.”

A MUSEUM in Kent is looking for south Londoners to share their memories of Eden Valley hop picking for a new exhibition.

Eden Valley Museum, in Edenbridge, Kent, is putting on a hop picking exhibition in 2019, and says it wants to hear from News readers who remember travelling to the countryside to take part in the seasonal work in decades gone by.

Villages where readers may have picked hops include Edenbridge, Chiddingstone, Cowden, Crockham Hill, Toys Hill, Four Elms and Penshurt.

According to historians, hop growing was widespread in the Eden Valley during the 19th century and early 1900s, with the flowers from the plant used to make beer and herbal medicines.

Many seasonal pickers came from London to ‘twiddle’ newly sown hops and stay in ‘hoppers huts’ during the harvest with their families.

A DISABLED man was left unable to drink his coke and not offered a refund after staff at Southwark Arches Nando’s turned down his repeated request for a plastic straw.

Ian Burnip has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 2, a progressive muscle wasting condition, which causes general muscle weakness and atrophy of the muscles. The wheelchair user says he needs a straw to drink.

The 31-year-old from Watford was out for dinner with a couple of friends when he asked at the till for a straw so he could have the drink he had already purchased.

But he was shocked when a member of staff behind the till apologetically told him, incorrectly, that it was company policy not to provide plastic straws any none were available – without even offering a refund.

Ian told the News: “Like everyone, I am concerned by the pollution caused by plastics in the environment, and have cut down on plastic use where possible - be it using reusable takeaway cups, or paper bags.

“However disabled people face numerous barriers to partaking in dayto-day life, be it societal attitudes, or the physical environment - stairs, no transport access, no suitable toilet facilities etc.

“It would make things more difficult for many disabled people - including myself - if simple utensils such as straws were removed from restaurants.

“Last year the value of the 'purple pound', the money contributed to the economy by disabled people, was estimated to be £249bn, so surely in times where restaurants are closing, and big chains struggling, they'd want to be as inclusive as possible and make their environment as welcoming to disabled people as possible?

“Sure, disabled people could carry a straw with them, but we already carry a host of equipment around, we aren't packhorses.

“And there's also the issue of a 'spur of the moment' trip.

Nando’s has removed all plastic straws from drinks fountains in all its restaurants as part of a global campaign to cut down on plastic pollution in our oceans.

However, company policy states that the single use straws are available on request for people who need them – contradicting what Ian was told in

Southwark Arches.

And although he has received an apology from Nando’s HQ, the chicken chain has not explained why its staff were unaware of the company’s police.

A Nando’s spokesperson said: "We are sorry to hear that Ian wasn't given a drinking straw with his meal.

“In an effort to reduce our plastic waste we have removed drinking straws from all drinks units across the country.

“We do recognise that some customers still need them and any customers who are looking for a straw should ask a member of staff who will provide one from behind the till.”

Southwark staff - on preventing homelessness.

In June, it announced a £615,000 fund from the government's Rough Sleeping Initiative Grant use the money to provide extra bed and breakfast places, police officers, nurses and outreach workers - including those specialising in domestic abuse - to tackle rough sleeping.

It was also awarded £100,000 to train up other frontline staff around the country - in London, Liverpool and Birmingham.

On Wednesday, September 5, the council announced has been granted an extra £587,500 for it to spend on this service.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Housing, (pictured) said:

“We are grateful for any extra funding for our service, we will not rest on our laurels in our ambition to prevent homelessness, and our innovation is what has made Southwark stand out.

"We have been submitting bids of the highest quality in order to ask for more funding for this vital service.

"However, while we are at the forefront of homelessness prevention, the key word is indeed ‘prevention’ – the Government needs to dig deeper in to the causes of homelessness – particularly welfare reform and the lack of affordable housing.

"An exemplary service like ours requires secure, long-term funding to cope with the level of demand and, crucially, those underlying issues which cause homelessness to be addressed.

An extra half a million pounds is given to Southwark Council to tackle homelessness

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has announced it has gained an extra half million in government funding to prevent rough sleeping.

The council, which is the largest local authority social landlord in London, was the only authority fully to pilot new legislation - the Homelessness Reduction Act - before it came into force in April 2018, and describes itself as a 'trailblazer' in its approach to preventing rough sleeping.

Southwark has already been awarded £690,000 to launch and manage the London Training Academy, which will train more than 1,000 staff from all 33 London councils - including 25

The council's approach has seen it work with charities Shelter and St Mungo's.

It says it has stopped using bed and breakfast accommodation for families in need by preventing homelessness from happening in the first case, by using more appropriate accommodation further afield.

The council is also working with charities Solace and Women's Aid to support people affected by domestic abuse.

TWO NUNHEAD mums who make herbal teas for children have won a coveted award.

Becky Coletto and Kate Towers founded their company Small & Wild in November 2017 so that children could share their joy in a good cup of tea.

The friends started experimenting with herbal and fruit blends which would be popular with, and healthy for, little taste buds.

Now the online magazine Junior has

acknowledged the mums’ achievement in their Design Awards, awarding them the silver prize in the Best Children’s Drink or Snack category.

The magazine said that “Junior’s mini judges were incredibly taken with the novelty of being offered a cup of tea and all sat very sweetly with pinkies cocked, happily sipping away.”

Positive reactions came from Fern Weston-Bennett, mother of mini judge Fancy Nancy, who said: "Loving this idea.

Nancy and I loved the teas. Some lovely flavours and a massive bonus when it ticks the health box too!"

One man campaign to clean up plastic from Thames beaches

A ROTHERHITHE man has launched a one man campaign to clean up plastic from the Thames’ beaches.

Jonathan Latham, 29, has been picking up litter on his own during walks for three months, before setting up a Twitter account to name and shame brands whose plastics regularly wash up on-shore.

The Cathay Road resident was inspired to start the initiative after seeing the amount of plastic waste going into rivers abroad though his work with Save the Children as a tropical disease specialist.

He said: “My specialisation is water

sanitation and hygiene – things like cholera and hepatitis, which are water transmitted. So I’ve always been really aware of water quality and pollution.

“I live by the water and I have a beer and go for a walk and always see rubbish floating along, but I just couldn’t believe this was happening in central London because I’ve seen it happen in other countries.”

Now the charity worker, who moved to London two years ago, regularly does solo litter picks on the Thames beaches near his home – and then uses social media to name and shame companies not doing enough on plastic waste.

NEWLY-DESIGNED FLAGS will fly at Borough Market to celebrate the rebellious spirit of Bankside.

The 60 flags, designed by 40 artists and designers, are part of the London Design Festival, and will fly at Borough Market’s Jubilee Place from September 15-23.

The display features designs from

Morag Myerscough, typographer and printmaker Alan Kitching and illustrator Alice Bowsher.

After being displayed, they will be auctioned off in support of local community projects.

“One person can consume 100 KitKats a year – but if you tell KitKat to stop producing those plastic wrappers, how many hundreds of millions do they produce a year?”

The worst offenders are big food companies such as Cadbury’s, Mars and Nestle, Mr Latham said.

“I pick up about thirty to forty sweet and chocolate wrappers every time I go for a walk,” he added.

More unexpected items that frequently pollute the Thames are cables ties, wiring and polystyrene.

On a typical litter pick, the environmentally conscious Rotherhithe resident fills up a large recyclable supermarket bag full of

plastic rubbish.

He said: “Last time I was out I picked up to 500 pieces of litter during a 40 minute walk.

“I find it weird that it’s still happening.”

Following his Twitter campaign tagging prolific producers of plastic – on the account CleanTheThames other people in the area are now asking to join in with his initiative, he says.

“A lot of people have reached out and asked whether I would like some company while I’m out and picking up rubbish, so hopefully it’s more than just me in the future.”

MOHAMED DURA-RAY WAS MURDERED THREE YEARS AGO - DON’T LET HIM BECOME A COLD CASE

AS THE three year anniversary of her son’s murder approaches, Mariama Kamara has told the News of her sadness that his killer has never been brought to justice, and her anger that police force funding is being cut as the capital’s murder rate skyrockets.

Alyesbury Estate teenager Mohamed Dura-Ray was just sixteen when he was stabbed to death, two weeks before his seventeenth birthday outside Canterbury Place on Walworth’s Newington Estate on September 14, 2015.

An inquest into his death heard that Manchester United Fan Mohamed, known as Mo, had been involved in an altercation with an ‘unknown male’, and had told witnesses ‘I’ve been stabbed’ as friends tried to help him before police and the ambulance service arrived.

Mo died from a single stab wound to the chest at 10.52pm that night after medics tried to save him.

Despite a £20,000 police reward for information, and a sample of blood found on a letter at the scene which matched the DNA of a suspect, the case was eventually dropped after a witness refused to give evidence.

A verdict of unlawful killing was returned by the coroner, and despite Mo’s family and police appealing for anyone to come forward with information, the case has gone cold.

This week is even more tragic for Mo’s mother, as the anniversary of his death is the day before her own birthday, and also close to his sister’s birthday.

“I’m just pleading to people to please come forward and find my son’s killer, any witnesses, anyone who saw anything, get in touch – there is a number to call,” she told the News.

The recent spate of stabbings and rising violent crime is particularly heart wrenching for her – and she warns that no one is immune from the impact of knife crime: “There are rampant killings, and no mother wants to lose a child.

“My son should be twenty this year and it is a hard thing for me – he was supposed to be in university.

Mo’s mum:

‘I worry so much about people forgetting about him, and the need for justice’

“Mothers need to talk to their children, the children who were there, and help them bring justice.

“Mothers have to work with police – don’t keep information secret. One day it could happen to you.

“This is about a life that has gone – not about being a ‘snitch’.”

Mo wanted to go to University College London to study engineering, and Mariama is worried that with less police officers on patrol and less funding, more young men could become victims of knife crime and never reach their potential.

“The Government is responsible,” she

told the News. “They are giving police five people’s work in one person’s job, and closing stations – why?

“We used to see a lot more police officers, but now we don’t see so many and successful prosecutions are going down.”

Mariama wanted to give particular thanks to Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, Neil Coyle, who brought the case to the attention of former Prime Minister David Cameron.

She said: “I want to give thanks to Neil who is always there for me.

“He is a father, and is caring and has compassion - I thank him from all of my

community was facing a number of challenges including growing knife crime across Southwark and gang related violence, and it is hoped that the event will help young people chose a different path – and also help them tell positive stories about their community.

Since the competition began in 2015, more than 300 people have taken part each year in what is billed as the only platform for children born and raised in the UK by Sierra Leonean families to showcase their talents.

The event also involved speakers give talks – including representatives from the police.

The DJ said: “Sierra Leonean children born or raised in UK are currently going through the toughest of challenges, like their involvement in gangs, leading to knife and gun crime.

“As a Community Ambassador to Sierra Leoneans in South East and part of LMTS Promotion, we engage, motivate and steer children and young people away from crime by providing a platforms through SKVS to socially participate in competition which will also create positive impact in the community they live in.”

THE ONLY variety show for Sierra Leonean youngsters in the UK was held was held in Bermondsey last month for its fourth year in a row, with organisers saying the event helps children find their unique talents and steers them away from crime.

The SaLone Kids Variety Show finals – SKVS2018 – was held on Sunday, August 26 at the Wheelshunters Social Club on Hornshay Street, and organised by LMTS Promotion.

Abdul Wahab Seisay, aka DJ Little, who hosted the event, is a community ambassador for Sierra Leoneans living in the UK and Ireland.

Storms and heavy rain replace the heat

ROM THE scorching summer days of July and August we move into September - the first of the autumn months.

The intense heat was cleared by storms and heavy rain – followed by much cooler conditions; days are now noticeably shorter.

September is an enchanting month; there are usually warm, calm days with plenty of flowers to enjoy - Sunflowers, Geraniums, Echinacea and the seasonal favourites Hydrangea paniculata (pictured), Chrysanthemum, Michaelmas daisy, Japanese anemone and Sedum.

Work in the garden includes clearing summer annuals once they have finished flowering; cutting back perennials, pruning Lavender (remove spent flower heads). Weeds have popped back into growth after a lull through the summer months (due to lack of rain and the heat); they need to be kept under control. Attention turns to planning next year’s displays for the garden and containers; plant spring flowering bulbs – there are lots to choose including miniature Narcissus, Crocus ‘Ruby Giant’, Snowdrops, Glory of the Snow and Grape Hyacinth.

Masny’s aim is to specifically emphasise the image’s content, be that product, an artistic collaboration or physical movement. Jan Masny began his photographic practice in the studio of Bogdan Axman, Krakow.

He very quickly moved to London in 2004 and has since cultivated a fruitful and engaging independent career.

A memorial concert for the deceased, ‘Jump’, brings the women back together as they each pay their respects to a partner, father or grandfather.

Baby-boomer singing sensation, Joy, one half of the former ‘Jump and Joy’, is contentedly living her hippy, weedsmoking, feminist protests’ life much to the disapproval of her daughter, the right wing, televangelist’s wife, Rachel, who is accompanied by her free-spirited teen daughter, Tamara. As if tensions weren’t high enough between mother and daughter and, well, the next generation mother and daughter, Joy has some news. A year after Jump’s death, Joy has found someone and they are to be married; it just so happens to be a woman.

All four of the characters (the fourth being Lou, Joy’s wife-to-be) are incredibly understandable and mostly likeable, shockingly, even the ultraconservative Rachel, despite her

antagonistic and sometimes bigoted views. Ultimately, her humanity lies in her role within her family, as a daughter and as a mother that is looking for her own acceptance. Jodie Jacobs’ portrayal of Rachel as sympathetic and conflicted, and with her powerhouse vocals on top of that, is a highlight. Lou, Rachel’s new archnemesis (and vice-versa to be fair) played by Melanie Marshall, is an absolute delight as the feminist fiancée, blessed with some of the funniest lines in the whole production, punctuated perfectly by some stellar comic timing as well as some bold, confident vocals. Janet Fullerlove as Joy captures her ‘Jump and Joy’ songs wonderfully, delivering a real Sixties vibe that is at times reminiscent of Carole King, while Kelly Sweeney’s Tamara embodies that passionate, misunderstood moment in life of teenage rebellion.

With Book and Lyrics by Bill Russell and an original score from Janet Hood, this story is transformed into something quite hilarious at times and quite touching at others. With a variety of musical numbers from the uplifting to the emotional, there is a

fair bit of pep and punch behind each of them, and my goodness are they catchy.

There is a freshness to the narrative in the way that it discusses prejudices and in looking through the lens of three generations brings a real focus on accepting differences. Rare too is it that we get to witness mother and daughter journeys as opposed to the usual father and son. Add to that some updated zeitgeisty references and the story is relevant and relatable.

This female-centric show is one worth catching during its limited run.

While there may be some fine tuning to do, what is here is a promising, warm and witty piece of theatre that will touch many. Without sounding too sickeningly obvious, Unexpected Joy was just that, unexpected and in the best way.

Go to Bohemia in One Flying Leap I HAVE been to Bohemia and I liked it. Bohemia is where the women are sassy and in charge.

They sneer as they look you up and down. They chew gum and curl their lips to show their disdain for you. They knock your shoulder as they brush past and leave you quivering in their wake, staring after them in awe. I’m trying to purchase a ticket to go back for more, writes Michael Holland...

Black Cat: Bohemia is marshalled by Miss Frisky with a heavy hand and a strict tone; when she wants something done, whether that be a trivial chore or herself, she gets things done - By any fit young man available.

This show combines comedy, song, circus, danger and a lot of debauchery.

Audience members are singled out and ridiculed for our delectation while men and women are literally thrown about on stage. There are lots of Wow moments and we, as a collective bunch, watched on even more intensely after the unfortunately named Maestro failed to complete a jump correctly and limped off injured into the shadows. Perhaps to die alone as the show went on…

But with one man down the troupe regrouped to fill in the gaps and threw themselves even harder into the work, seemingly spinning faster and going higher than they had ever done before.

Hence we gasped when Charlotte was shot into the air by strong hands, where she did a 360 before rapidly descending with legs outstretched in a split. How could anyone catch that?

But someone did, just millimetres before she hit the floor. Our communal gulp turned in to a resounding cheer and applause.

There was danger all around. I could not understand how Jo Moss did not crush his fingers as he performed gyroscopic acrobatics in the cyr wheel.

Or how Nicholas Jelmoni’s spine didn’t cave in when others used him to sit, stand or jump about on. And how did LJ Marles fly through that hoop without touching the sides?

And as well as a hint of peril, there was a strong smell of paraffin when the aptly monikered Miss Fatale did her fire swallowing act. Being in a giant tent, I was glad I was at the end of the row and closest to the door.

Black Cat: Bohemia is real circus, where these highly trained performers are perpetually striving to go bigger and better. Black Cat: Bohemia is no Health & Safety tick box affair. It has you on the edge of your seat with its

scarily death-defying feats and because you need to be ready to run at any given moment.

I loved every minute of it (Except when poor Maestro took a tumble for the worse).

Being billed as cabaret means there is almost as much singing and showtime as there is acrobatics, but with MC Frisky on the mic it is fine. The live band rocking out a thunderous beat keep the tempo up at eleven from start to finish, and the show earned itself a rousing ovation at the end.

Walworth’s World War One street signs

OWADAYS WE are used to seeing flowers placed at a crime scene or road accident, or the sight of a white “ghost bike” at the place where a cyclist has been killed, writes Neil Crossfield…

However, these local acts of remembrance are not a new phenomenon.

War memorials, remembering those who fell in the two world wars, are a well-known and permanent feature in many British towns and villages, but few people are aware of the street shrines which were created whilst the ‘Great War’ still raged.

Research has shown that several of these existed in Walworth, in streets such as Larcom Street, Date Street and Olney Road.

However, the most notable was perhaps the one in Trafalgar Street, where, from around one hundred and sixty houses, over three hundred men had joined up to help the war effort.

The Trafalgar Street shrine paid homage to the eighteen men who had made the supreme sacrifice and also contained a roll of honour of those still serving.

The first shrines had appeared in south Hackney, east London, around April 1916, but the movement rapidly spread throughout the country during the summer of 1916, following the momentous battles of Jutland and the Somme.

Once dedicated by local clergy and dignitaries, these would be maintained by the local community who would ensure that the shrines were properly cared for.

Fresh flowers would be placed daily and locals would display photographs of their loved ones next to those of the Royal family, military leaders and the flags of the Allied forces.

The shrines became both a focal point for local commemoration, for those that had fallen, and perhaps more superstitiously, as a good luck charm for those still fighting.

However, there is evidence that they eventually fell out of favour, due to real difficulty in keeping them up to date, due to the high number of casualties The Church of England helped develop the movement, and no one person more so than the Bishop of London, Arthur Winnington-Ingram.

He was an enthusiastic supporter, who saw the conflict as a holy war.

Whilst dedicating a shrine in East London he had said, “This nation had never done a more Christ-like thing than when it went to war in August 1914”.

So, whilst the shrines may have offered comfort to the bereaved, they no doubt fulfilled another role, that being to ensure that all eligible men would do their patriotic Christian duty and sign up to fight.

The Church was not alone in promoting the shrines, the Evening News newspaper actively campaigned for the nationwide erection of them and held an

exhibition of potential shrine designs at Selfridges Department store in Oxford Street.

The famous store contributed £150 campaign and also offered to pay for the erection of all shrines within a mile of its store.

It is not known what happened to the Walworth shrines after the war as they were soon replaced by more permanent memorials in the 1920s.

The shrine movement was extremely popular around the

country during the First World War but now has largely been forgotten until now.

As part of this year’s Walworth History Festival, a replica shrine will be recreated and displayed at the Old Newington Library from September 15-23.

Neil Crossfield, a Walworth resident and member of the Walworth Society, has become a community researcher for the Walworth History Festival.

Neil spent 30 years in the London Fire Brigade before retiring two years ago. He is now studying for a history degree at Goldsmiths University.

“I’ve always been interested in history but the history festival has given me a chance to do some proper research about my local area,” he says.

“I’m currently planning a project which aims to remember the huge number of Walworth men killed during the First World War and will be looking for other people who have an interest in their local heritage and want to get involved.”

W

ith the panic created in recent newspaper headlines it’s a wonder any good people were out on the streets of south London when I and local resident Ms Aitch went to try the fare at Mr Bao, writes Michael Holland...

‘Sorry for being late’, she said while hitching her bike to a stand. Her tactics for appeasement then admirably stretched to luring me into a Plum Wine Negroni that she had espied at the top of the drinks menu. It was the perfectly mixed cocktail that allowed me to switch

off and enjoy the subtle flavours while my dining companion related some excuse about neighbours stopping her from leaving on time.

Mr Bao is the Taiwanese restaurant renowned for its bao buns, those soft, putty-like handfuls of joy that all kinds of fillings can be put into, and which 90% of the main dishes are comprised of. But before we ventured into the world of bao we spent some time talking to our server Mh’ya before deciding on a few starter plates first. And once they began to arrive they just kept on coming.

First to land was Sesame Spinach; fresh leaf with sesame seeds in an interesting sauce. Really good. Then the Sweet Potato Chips with a wasabi mayo.

Exquisitely crunchy… moreish to the nth degree. Fried Chicken with a Miso Mayo - another crunchy extravaganza. And finally for the first courses, four perfectly formed Pork Dumplings with a chilli dip.

This was the agreed favourite from that excellent selection.

The website says not to book but to just turn up, but Mr Bao has created a buzz in

Peckham and collected a huge customer base that fills the place out on a grey Wednesday. Evidently, it is the good food, competitive pricing, plus the energetic, happy staff that is the attraction, because in all honesty Mr Bao is not much to look at. In low light it could be some old smugglers’ pub in a Victorian fishing village. It is, with its

carefully designed, run-down look, a go to place for the incoming locals who want to feel they are living on the edge in a once-scary Peckham. There is music but the paramount noise here is the chatter. All around us were people leaning in and saying ‘Eh?’ to each other while trying to lipread. Or was that just me?

The Bao Buns began arriving in quick succession. Little fistfuls of soft, spongy, edible pillows of steamed dough wrapped around Pork Belly, Beef Brisket or Drunken Prawn. Each bun had different accoutrements: kimchi, pickled mooli, shallots, which added another lively tang to proceedings.

We made a valiant effort to finish all the food before us, and almost succeeded, but not quite. The standout dishes were the Sweet Potato Chips, Pork Dumplings, Beef Bao and that intriguing plate of spinach.

We finished with a glass of sake. Ms Aitch had hers with plum wine, on the recommendation of Mh’ya, while I had mine with lemon, the traditional

Taiwanese way - At least that is what I was led to believe. They were both nice, supposedly health-giving, and completed a nice evening in Mr Bao.

CHRIS PHILLIPS urged his team to show more “courage” on the ball after Millwall Lionesses were defeated 3-0 in their opening Women’s Championship fixture against Lewes last Sunday.

The Lionesses conceded in the second minute from a corner when Lewes’ Sam Quayle headed towards goal and after a scramble the referee’s assistant judged the ball had crossed the line.

Lewes gained confidence from going ahead early and doubled their lead when Rebecca Carter won possession deep in the Lions' half and broke into box to unleash a powerful effort which found the bottom corner.

The Rooks went on to add a third goal on the stroke of half-time. Lewes attacked down the right through Victoria Carleton who found Quayle and the goalscorer unselfishly set up Avilla Bergin to finish.

The Lionesses regained their composure in the second half at Dartford’s Princes Park and retained possession better than they had before the break. Lewes were dangerous on the counter-attack and went close to a fourth, but Lionesses stopper Grace Taylor made a spectacular save from Bergin’s long-range shot.

“I think in the second half we got better, which is what I can take away from the game,” Lionesses boss Phillips said. “A few mistakes in the first half cost us on the first two goals, but their third goal was a well-worked goal from them so I will give them credit on that.

“I thought we could have done better in the first half, but in the second our retention of the ball was better and we created a couple of chances “At half-time, I told we them we had to find ways to play. Teams are going to come here and press us, which is okay, but we have to find ways that we can play around them. REGIONAL MIDDLEWEIGHT champion Olamide Dedegbe questioned the judges’ decision after crashing out in the first round of the Quest Knockout Tournament – and will consider his future in the Queensbury Boxing League.

Peckham’s Dedegbe was joined by middleweights Aaron Lowery, Matt Flavel, Jordan Tucker, Eddie Balaam, Karl Trott and Kieron Harris in the tournament staged at the Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey last weekend.

Dedegbe met Tucker, who had come down from light-cruiserweight to compete in the tournament.

From the opening bell it was a clash of styles. Tucker was the aggressor coming forward while Dedegbe worked on the back foot scoring well with jabs to the body and head.

In the second round Tucker landed with a right-uppercut and forced the

champion back. Working in close, however, Dedegbe continued to land left hooks.

The third and final round was a dramatic and electric affair as both boxers exchanged heavy shots in close without eeither man landing flush.

Dedegbe momentarily slipped to the canvas but he got to his feet and both fighters traded blows until the final bell.

After the fight went to the judges’ scorecards, Tucker was awarded the decision and went through to the semifinal, where he would be defeated.

Dedegbe explained why he believed he should have been given the decision.

“I think I performed well against a rangier and stronger fighter,” he said.

“But I landed shots, he didn’t land with much. He may have caught me once or twice but I thought I did the better work in there all throughout the three rounds.

“I’m being told the second round was closer than I thought, but the first and

third were not even close.

“I’m always going to respond on emotion and I have no idea why it went to him. I feel like there are maybe fighters in the competition who have a certain standing and maybe that’s what plays for them.

“If you’re a hard puncher [like Tucker] and you come forward maybe they feel that’s pressing the action. But you actually need to score, because that’s not always doing the better work.”

Dedegbe will take time to digest the performance and result.

He added: “I need to re-watch it and be a bit calmer. I’ll be in the gym on Monday. I’m always in the gym – not only is it my job but I enjoy what I do.

“In the league I really need to sit and think about what I’m going to do, as I don’t enjoy being on the wrong end of a decision that I don’t agree with. I really have to think about whether it’s the best option for me.”

“Last week the loss was very disappointing. So, the gaffer rung the changes, put in a few new signings, it just freshens it up a bit and means people can come in with no pressure on them,” Cook said.

“Obviously going into the final ten minutes 1-0 down we’re hoping we can get one back, and that came. But there’s always disappointment when you don’t win a game.

“Even though a point is better than nothing, we really do try and go out to get that three points every time, and the gaffer sets us up to try and win. So, while it’s always good to get a point, there’s always room for improvement.”

Cook was pleased with how the side battled after going behind.

“In football it’s going to happen at one point or another,” he continued. “It’s something where we have to look at ourselves individually if we want to get back into the game.

“We can’t ever let our heads go down and we don’t want characters like that. So we have to look at ourselves. You have to do what you’re good at. The gaffer’s signed

you because he sees something in you and you have to try and bring that to the game.”

Cook scored his goal after coming off the bench. “It’s about coming on and trying to be positive. We’re 1-0 down, I came on in one of my natural positions.

I’m always confident when I’m playing there. When I face up to someone and I get at them I always

back myself to get a shot off, and I scored.

“That’s always a good feeling but it would’ve felt better if we’d got the three points and it was the winner.”

Cook will be hoping to take his goal-scoring form into this Saturday. The south Londoners face a huge test away at tabletopping Woking.

Duke six-shooter kills Greenwich

PECKHAM RYE’S first home game of the season in the Woolwich & Eltham Sunday Football Alliance ended in an emphatic 13-0 win over local rivals AFC Sporting Greenwich.

Peckham were looking to build on an excellent start to the season, and they did so in inspiring fashion, with Duke Binitie scoring a remarkable firsthalf double hat-trick.

John Wooley also manged three before the break, the first an improvised effort which ricocheted off a defender and crossed the line to make it 1-0.

Peckham piled on the pressure and Binitie cut in from the wing to shoot from 25 yards into the top corner.

Binitie added five more before the break, and another two from Woolley made it 9-0 at half-time.

Manager Alvin Spencer warned against complacency in his teamtalk, and just 90 seconds into the second half Craig Parsons latched onto a 40-yard pass from Danny Gibson to make it ten.

Danny Warne added another from the edge of the area, before Ricky Essex drove home from 20 yards to complete the dozen.

Peckham didn’t let up, and Tarique Jules, after going close on a number of occasions, soloed through to complete the rout.

AST SATURDAY, Dulwich Hamlet welcomed a very special visitor. Jan Stover is the German contact who facilitated Dulwich’s friendship with Altona 93. Jan was in London for the weekend, and obviously saw no better way to spend his Saturday than watching the Hamlet play.

Peckham were excellent at the back, captain Owen Rochester marshalling his defence superbly and aided by Dean Grice, Danny Warne, Keenan Linton-Rochester and goalkeeper Mick Holman.

Afterwards, Duke won the man of the match vote by a landslide.

Peckham are still the only side in the division not to concede a goal and they sit top of the league.

Such was the buzz among the Hamlet faithful over Jan’s presence that everybody seemed to be talking about him, although nobody seemed to know where he actually was.

When I tried to locate him, I was informed that he was stood just behind the goal. On arriving there, I was directed to the queue for the burger van. When scouring the queue, I was then sent to the top of the main stand to no avail, once again.

It seemed as if Jan’s unbelievable commitment to a small English club 500 miles from his home had denoted him a somewhat ethereal character.

However, I eventually ran into the German phantom by accident outside.

After initially warning me that his English was “not so good”, he went on to give a truly eloquent account of the friendship between Dulwich and Altona 93.

Like a traditional English storyteller, Jan began: “It was a very cold day in November 2010. We were playing at home with a crap attendance. It was actually the last time Altona played with a red ball because the pitch was frozen. He (lifelong Hamlet fan, Mishi Morath) was walking around taking pictures and I thought that he was a German groundhopper. So, I asked him if he wanted to buy a fanzine. It turned out he was English so we got talking and weeks later we organised for their supporters’ team to visit Hamburg.”

Mishi was visiting Altona because the club was founded in the same year as its English counterpart – 1893.

Mishi and Jan would soon discover that, by remarkable coincidence, both clubs had played each other in 1925.

During the match Dulwich legend Edgar Kail faced up to Altona hero Adolf Jager. Aside from history, the clubs share what Mishi describes as a similar “social conscience”.

Jan drives this point home: “We have very comparable fanbases. I think in both clubs we are very political people who care about local community and rights for minorities”.

As the Hamlet-Altona connection has grown over the last eight years, Jan has visited the Dulwich club numerous times.

“My first time at Champion Hill was the New Year’s derby against Tooting in 2013. It was a great 4-4 draw – a brilliant experience. I think this is my sixteenth visit since then. But it’s my first time at Imperial Fields.

“I miss a lot of faces that I met on my previous visits. So, perhaps we have to rebuild the atmosphere here”.

Jan also pointed out some positives that perhaps Dulwich fans should not overlook, even as they remain dislocated from their natural home.

“When I was first over here in the 2012-13 season there were a couple of hundred people in attendance,” Jan continued. “As the years passed, the numbers were increasing so fast, so that by last season it was very packed for the big matches. It’s nice to have some terracing behind the goal.”

The culmination of Hamlet and Altona’s relationship so far came with this summer’s pre-season tour to Hamburg. The tour involved two matches for Dulwich – the first versus local team HFC Falke and the second versus Altona; a supporters cricket match (both sides have a surprising cricketing history); and a party to celebrate the clubs’ shared 125th anniversaries.

“The summer trip was undoubtedly one of the greatest weekends of my life. Now I know I'm a bit of a sad git, but even so...it was magical.”

Mishi shared his thoughts on the tour. “I'm sometimes asked by our fans who are curious about the friendship and want to go to Hamburg and experience it for themselves. For those Altona 'virgins' I simply suggest that all they do is wear a Hamlet scarf or shirt. Altona fans will come up to them, shake their hand, give them a peck on the cheek, buy them a beer...the fact they don't know each other is immaterial, being a Dulwich Hamlet fan is enough for them.

“The summer trip was undoubtedly one of the greatest weekends of my life. Now I know I'm a bit of a sad git, but even so...it was magical. I’m not ashamed to admit that I welled up and had to wipe away the tears from my eyes several times on that trip. It was well worth the three years of hard work building up to it, raising the funds needed for the team to get there.

I know Altona are already striving to raise the money for another trip back to London with their boys.”

The story of the friendship between Dulwich and Altona (and on a smaller scale that between Mishi and Jan) is a remarkable one. The time and effort that has gone into orchestrating crosscontinental tours speaks volumes for the social and selfless forces at work in each club. But, Jan is keen to point out – “it’s not like that is the main reason to come here [to Dulwich]. The main reason is because we are football supporters and football is the most important thing. All the rest is a great plus, and I really like it.”

Each month, EXCLUSIVELY in Southwark News, Micky Simpson provides an update on the news from the club concerning supporters

I’VE GOT two messages in my column this month.

The first one is the ‘Fear No Foe’ walk for Bermondsey boxer Charlie Wynn.

A group of Millwall fans and Charlie's friends are doing a charity walk on September 29 in aid of the Lions supporter, who suffered a bleed on the brain after a sparring session in March and needed life-saving surgery.

The group are going to walk from the IBOX Gym at Scrubbs Farm (Lower Gravel Road, Bromley BR2 8LL) to The Den in time for our game against Sheffield United.

We will be doing collections on the walk and outside the Millwall Café before the 3pm kick-off. We would love Millwall fans who would like to show their support for one of our own to come and join us on this eleven-mile walk.

The local pubs that collectors will call on are: The Marquis of Granby; The Windsor; The Five Bells; The Ancient Foresters; The Blue Anchor; The Old Bank; ‘Arrys Bar. We will be doing lots of other things on the day to highlight our ‘Fear No Foe’ walk and we’ve had a special badge designed by Andy Cole that will be sold for £5 each with all profits going to Charlie’s fund.

If you want to join our walk we will be meeting at the gym in Bromley from 9am leaving at 9:30am for The Den. The full route will be added to @MillwallFOTB social media account closer to the day.

A GoFundMe page set up by Charlie’s wife, Alana, had raised over £15,000 by early this week.

The extent of the damage to his brain and his subsequent path to recovery was explained in a post on the website.

It read: “A lot of you may already know Charlie, some may know of his current situation, but for those of you who don’t here is a little insight.

“Charlie is a cheeky, loving, kind and considerate young man who is instantly loved by anyone who he comes into contact with. His fun-loving personality

is infectious. He has friends in abundance, a very close-knit family and a beautiful wife of two years, Alana.

“At the age of nineteen (he is now 29) he took himself off to a local gym because he fancied trying his hand in the world of amateur boxing. It turned out a very good decision as he went on to excel in the sport with a very good amateur record picking up many a good win and several titles along the way.

“In 2016, he decided to take the plunge and turn professional. Although he picked up some decent sponsorship deals

(the Millwall Supporters Club was by far the most prestigious to him as he is a lifelong Millwall supporter and seasonticket holder) he still had to continue to work full-time as an electrician to fulfil financial obligations. To date he has only had two (winning) pro fights mainly owing to bad luck with injures.

“On March 16, 2018, while preparing for his third professional fight, Charlie had a mishap when sparring. He became very weak towards the end of a sixround sparring session and it was obvious that something was wrong. It

was.

“Charlie lost consciousness and was taken to Kings College Hospital where we were told he had suffered an acute subdural haematoma (a large brain bleed). Charlie had to have emergency life-saving surgery where a portion of his skull was removed to relieve pressure.

“The operation was successful and the bleed was evacuated but Charlie’s brain had been significantly injured as a result of the bleed. Charlie remained in hospital for ten weeks in a minimally conscious sate.

“Then, on May 25, he got the move that we were all praying for, to the Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability in Putney.

Since this move his progress has been quite remarkable.

“The greatest unknown now is the path ahead for Charlie, what will be his limitations and how long will the road to recovery take.

“A lot of support was offered by many people after Charlie’s injury and his boxing family at the IBOX gym immediately rallied around ensuring financial support was given. Charlie is self-employed, but at that time fundraising seemed too much too soon.

“Five months on from Charlie’s accident, we are now coming to terms with the time scale of his rehabilitation and are more aware of his needs. Our rehabilitation centre is not NHS-funded, extra physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy sessions all have to be privately funded, along with any adjustments that may be needed to his home.

“Our ultimate goal is to get Charlie home. His words: ‘I want to get home and to be able to walk.’ We will strive to ensure that he is able to accomplish these goals and greatly appreciate your help and support in his journey.

“Charlie is a fighter, this is the biggest fight of his life but he will win it. FEAR NO FOE!” My second message is to all Millwall fans that use South Bermondsey station after home games. I am holding my first fans’ focus group with representatives from the Met Police, British Transport Police and Southern Rail plus Millwall Football Club and Southwark Council.

Change of Livingston boss led to defender’s Millwall return

JAMES BROWN returned to Millwall after new Livingston boss Gary Holt decided he wanted to give young Scottish players a first-team chance.

Lions defender Brown, 20, was recruited

by Kenny Miller on a season-long loan and made his debut against Celtic at Parkhead on the opening day of the Scottish Premier League campaign.

But ex-Rangers striker Miller left the club just two weeks into the new season leaving Brown’s immediate future uncertain.

Holt, a former team-mate of Neil Harris’ at Nottingham Forest, was appointed, and decided on a different direction for the club.

Brown is back with the Lions, who will likely try to find him a suitable club for another loan move later this season.

“It was a real unfortunate one,” Harris explained. “Kenny Miller brought James in to go straight in and play.

“Obviously you’re nervous about sending a player to Scotland so far from his family [in Dover] after he was with Carlisle last season.

“But he had the chance to play in the Scottish Premier League, and I had a couple of really good chats with Kenny Miller and it was a great place for him to go and play.

“For whatever reason Kenny ends up leaving and a new man comes in. I know Gary Holt and he said he was going to play his young Scottish players, which I understand.

“Circumstances dictated it. It was either stay there and be 600 miles away from home with maybe an outside chance of forcing his way in after a period of being patient probably.

“Or we could bring him back to work with us. We felt bringing him back here to work was a good option for James at the moment. He is very young, not just in football terms but in life terms as well to be that far away from home without the real expectation or promise of playing.

“It would have been tough for him.

“Carlisle last year was brilliant for him, 37 appearances, mainly starts. And being away from home in that environment was a great experience.

“He only went to Scotland because there were assurances he was going to play. But we all understand how football works.”

A POTENTIAL stadium sell-out.

The league leaders at The Den. One of the world’s most influential managers in the opposition dugout. A claim that the visitors on Saturday are the fittest team in the league.

Those facts and plenty more make this an intriguing clash.

A lot has happened since August 4, when a Millwall team finding their groove early blew Middlesbrough away before then throwing the game away.

But it was a mostly positive start and a draw against Blackburn and then a 2-1 defeat of Frank Lampard’s Derby County was creating the strong impression that last season’s play-off challenge was no flash in the pan.

But if the wheels haven’t yet fallen off that theory they have certainly wobbled a bit.

There have been three league defeats in a row for the first time since October 2016. Arguably one of the best central midfielders in the division, George Saville, has left and individual errors and defensive uncertainty rarely seen in the last six months of last season have blighted the team since the win over the Rams.

Shaun Hutchinson is out injured and his loss along with Saville’s robs Millwall of their best two players from last season.

Saville’s replacement, Ryan Leonard, is match fit and will have had two weeks on the training ground to get familiar with Millwall’s system. He will be competing with Ryan Tunnicliffe for a place in midfield alongside Shaun Williams, if the latter returns from international duty with the Republic of Ireland without any problems.

There are at least three other positions where Lions boss Neil Harris faces really tough choices.

Mahlon Romeo was at fault for Swansea’s first goal in Millwall’s last game before the international break, and that’s not the first mistake he has made this season that has directly led to the opponents scoring.

a strong case to start at right-back, as will Byron Webster to be Jake Cooper’s centre-back partner in place of Murray Wallace.

And up front, Lee Gregory has been far quieter than usual in the last two games, though that was also in large part because service to the front players has been poor. Supporters at The Den are becoming impatient to see the first record signing this summer, Tom Bradshaw, start for their side.

Aside from selection questions, there are those defensive issues to sort out. Millwall have conceded five league goals at The Den this season,

all of them in the final seventeen minutes of those three games.

And if Leeds captain Liam Cooper is to be believed, the fitness of the squad under Marcelo Bielsa and how they have finished games – they have conceded just one goal from play in the second half of their league fixtures this season – could spell trouble for Millwall.

“One thing we know this season is that we are fitter than any team in the league and it’s a great feeling to have,” Cooper.

“The start of this season it was easy to pick a team. Yes, I’ll always be loyal to my players and support my players 100 per cent, but when you’ve lost three

But Millwall can point out that Leeds arrived at The Den last season unbeaten in eight and being seen as shoo-ins for at least a play-off place under Thomas Christiansen, before Aiden O’Brien scored the winner that started a downward spiral that resulted in Christiansen eventually losing his job and the Yorkshire giants finishing thirteenth, five places below the Lions.

Given the form of both sides this season, though, Millwall appear to have their work cut out to ensure that recent history in this fixture repeats itself.

MILLWALL’S DRESSING room may have been unsettled during the last transfer window – but Ryan Tunnicliffe says it’s the best one he’s ever played in.

Lions boss Neil Harris made the admission when it became more probable Millwall would lose George Saville to Middlesbrough, who also wanted Jed Wallace.

During the international break Ryan Leonard has had a chance to settle in after his club-record move from Sheffield United, and Tunnicliffe revealed there has been a sense of fun on the training ground.

There was renewed enthusiasm and focus at the squad’s base on Calmont Road this week, and Tunnicliffe believes they are now on the way to rediscovering the kind of team unity on which the form of the second half of last season was based.

“It’s difficult at the time because if players are being linked with moves away then that means they’re doing alright,” he said. “You don’t want to see your better players leave but at the end of the day that’s football, if someone wants to go then it happens if they can force it through.

“In any other walk of life if someone gets offered more money they’ll take it. It’s Sav’s prerogative to do what he wants. I’ve got nothing really to say about it, I wish him all the best.

“It’s worked out well for the club as well because they received a record fee and that can be reinvested in January and improve the squad to allow us to go one better than last year.

Lions squad ‘laughing and joking again’

“The hard work started this week gearing towards a massive game on Saturday.

“I think it’s been a great dressing room all along. Obviously there are blips here and there when there is stuff happening behind the scenes, but it’s probably the best dressing room I’ve been in during my career. We need to get it back to where it was last season because that’s when we’re at our best.

“Now everyone knows their role. No one wants to leave and we’ve got everyone in that we wanted. It’s a bit more settled and it came at a good time because we didn’t have a game and had time to get everyone integrated.

“Ryan has come in and it gives us time to work with him and make him feel welcome.”

Saville’s departure means Leonard and Tunnicliffe are competing to be Shaun Williams’ regular midfield partner.

Tunnicliffe, 25, has only had one extended period of starting regularly, when Williams was sidelined through injury last season for three months.

Williams regained his place towards the end of the year, and then the Republic of Ireland international and Saville were the first-choice pair as the Lions went seventeen league games unbeaten to propel themselves towards the top six.

Tunnicliffe knows that if he gets his chance against Leeds this weekend he needs to “grab the shirt”

they’re great and they do that. They’ll have as many as we will allow [in the ticket allocation].

“Our fans love this game. It’s going to be a cracking atmosphere, and you can almost guarantee it’s going to be a hot day, it always seems to be a glorious day. We love games like this.

“I’m really looking forward to it. I’m going to go and put my special backpack on which makes me ready for these games.

“It’s the perfect game for us because the crowd are going to be right behind us from the off regardless of how we’ve done in previous games.

“It’s going to be manic, it’ll be brilliant.”

Most of the squad have had almost two weeks to work on the problems that have affected the side in the last three games.

Millwall conceded five goals in those

losses: two directly resulting from individual errors on the ball, one from a cross, one from a set-piece and one from a counter-attack.

But Millwall’s preparation for the game has also been slightly disrupted with six players away with their countries during the international break.

“It’s a difficult one because half the squad hasn’t been here,” Morison said.

“But we train and work hard and get the same kind of work in as the boys that are not here are doing. [This week] we focus on Leeds, [there was] no point in us working on new things.

“It’s a funny one, the international break, because you have to use it to get that balance between getting some rest and working hard as well.”

MILLWALL SKIPPER Steve Morison believes facing Leeds United at home is the “perfect game” after three successive league defeats.

Sales of tickets for the clash had already exceeded the highest attendance of this season – 15,056 on the opening day against Middlesbrough – by late last week and Whites fans will fill the upper tier of the away end.

The Lions have lost three league games in a row for the first time since October 2016 and had an unsettling few weeks at the end of August with players linked with moves away.

Despite the difficult start to the season, Lions supporters will come in their droves to see if their side can repeat last season’s result in the corresponding fixture, when Millwall defeated the then-league leaders 1-0 almost to the day a year ago.

Morison is also facing one of his former sides.

“It’s a great one. It’s a case of they’re coming here full of confidence. They’re top of the league and they’re flying,” Morison said.

“They’ve got a different way of playing than they had before, but as we know everyone is beatable.

“We will do everything we can to try and beat them. We’re on our patch, but their fans will travel in numbers because

Millwall are aiming to end a run of three successive league defeats this weekend, against an unbeaten Leeds.

Tunnicliffe feels it is easy to identify what contributed to them losing those three games.

“It’s probably down to this level and concentration,” he explained. “I still don’t know how but we had five minutes of madness against Swansea, switched off twice and before you know it after controlling the game we’re 2-1 down and we lose it.

“It was the same at Rotherham away, we were the better team but one lapse in concentration and they score from a set-piece after a second ball in the box.

RYAN LEONARD said Neil Harris’ success as a manager was a key factor in the midfielder deciding to join the club.

Leonard, 26, signed for Millwall on the last day of the transfer window – with just three minutes to spare before the 5pm deadline – after only hearing a record bid had been accepted for him earlier that day.

He was training with Sheffield United when Blades boss Chris Wilder pulled him aside to tell him the club had agreed a fee with the Lions.

That meant a quick change of plans to get down to London with his partner in Friday traffic – and he almost didn’t make it.

Leonard was stuck in traffic near Kilburn when he received a phone call and it was his former Southend team-mate Harris on the other end.

His prospective boss told him to get out and hop on the Tube to Bermondsey before a dash to The Den for his medical while his agent and club officials concluded the finer details of his contract.

“It wasn’t official until the morning of the deadline and the manager at Sheffield United told me. He asked

me: ‘Would you be interested?’ Naturally I said yes. All my family are down this side so for me it was a no brainer – I was desperate to get here,” Leonard explained.

“It was a crazy day to say the least and it was a case of any mode of transport. I left Sheffield around eleven in the morning. I drove down with my missus. It was a bit like whacky races down the motorway, with the Friday traffic.

“It got to around four o’clock and I looked at my partner and said, ‘I’m not sure we’re going to make this’. As I said that the manager called me and said: ‘Where are you? How are you getting here?’ He told me to just ditch the car and get on the Tube.

“I’m not from London and I don’t understand the Tube, so it was a bit of guesswork. It was a mad dash across London and the deal was completed with a couple of minutes to spare. But it was one I desperately wanted to get done.”

Leonard will have had two weeks to get used to his new environment before Millwall face Leeds United at The Den this Saturday.

“It’s been really good, it was

Leonard could have joined Millwall a year earlier after they tested Southend’s resolve with a number of bids.

But the Shrimpers didn’t want to sell – and Leonard had too much respect for the club to rock the boat by demanding a move – before Sheffield United swooped in for a £750,000 deal last January.

“It was an odd situation,” Leonard admitted. “You don’t want things to be in the press but it got out. I knew Sheffield United and Millwall were interested but Southend didn’t want to let me go. I’m one of those that when I go onto the pitch I kind of just forget about it, it’s a release.

“The biggest thing then was to keep doing the best I could and whatever would be would be. Southend didn’t want me to leave and I really enjoyed my time there.

“Sheffield United didn’t work out but I’m really happy to be here now and I’m looking forward to getting game time and winning matches.”

term, competing with Ryan Tunnicliffe for a place in midfield beside Shaun Williams.

And he will not be fazed if he is straight into action against the league leaders this weekend as he described what he will bring to his new side.

He said: “I’m a box-to-box midfielder, I like to get forward but will get back to defend as well. I can pop up with the odd goal now and again which is important as a midfielder. You always need to help out the attacking players.

“I’m an all-action midfielder and like to put in some tackles.

I’ve always enjoyed watching how they play here, they like to get it wide, put crosses into the box and I think that’s going to help me and my game.

“Being here for a week I can see that there are a lot of very good players at this club.

“It doesn’t get much bigger than Leeds and I’d rather get chucked in at the deep end than go any other way.

“It’s going to be a massive game.

They’re a very good side but so are we. I know we’ve done well at home in the last twelve months or so. The last game wasn’t the best but we’re ready to bounce back.

“Training has been good this week, it’s been sharp and intense and we’re all raring to go.”

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris has sensed a real positive shift in mood in his squad – and now he wants them to show it on the pitch.

Harris admitted the end August was a damaging period for his players and affected squad morale.

But with the transfer window closed and finally a settled squad to work with – at least until January – Harris has been able to focus fully on preparations ahead of a huge game against Leeds on Saturday.

“It’s been brilliant,” Harris said.

“The boys have had the opportunity to put in some hard yards on the training pitch and take information on board.

It’s been great to integrate the new boys.

“I just feel we’ve got the group back again. Hopefully Swansea was the end of a difficult couple of weeks for us when everything that could go wrong did. Maybe that last ten minutes of the Swansea game, hopefully, was rock bottom for us.

“Now we’re on the up again. It’s the best period of training we’ve had in a long time, probably since the lead-up to Boro [on the opening day].

“It’s been really productive, and the players have had some time away from me and each other as well, which is also important. I think we all feel

recharged and ready to go on Saturday.

“I was very clear after Swansea that Leeds was a great game for us. It means a lot to both sets of fans, and you’ve got one team that’s top of the league pushing for promotion and Millwall trying to find our way again, get a foothold in the league.

“It promises to be a top game.”

The game was heading for a sell-out this week, with Lions fans excited about the clash with their rivals.

“So they should as well,” Harris said. “We worked hard for two years to get into the Championship and it took us four or five months to get going.

“I don’t expect it to take four or five months this year but if it does it does.

We have to embrace it and enjoy it.

On paper the next run of fixtures is really tough, but that’s why we play at this level. The players in my dressing room have earned the right to be at this level, and that’s why we bought players this summer to compete in the squad.

“We know we’ve got good players, but more importantly we’ve got a good team and good spirit. When it all fits together and the mentality is right we’re a match for anybody in this league.

“That’s the message that is clear from me ahead of Saturday: on the training ground and in the changing room we’re back to our best. Now we have to transfer that back onto the pitch.”

RYAN LEONARD has shrugged off the record fee Millwall paid for him – and said it was a “massive sigh of relief” to complete the move.

Leonard became the club’s record signing when he joined from Sheffield United on August 31 for a fee that could rise to £1.5million.

Midfielder Leonard decided to leave the Blades after seeing his game time limited after joining them from Southend last January.

“It didn’t work out. It was an opportunity I had but I wasn’t playing many games coming from Southend where I was playing all the time,” he said. “It was difficult to go from playing to not playing.

“For me it was a football decision, it was a decision I had to make for myself. I’m just very happy that Millwall thought that highly of me to put in the bid and thankfully it got accepted.

“It’s nice to be appreciated, but I’m not thinking about the fee.

“I’ve come here to do well for the football club and the fans, to win games and score goals. To me the fee doesn’t mean anything.

“I was in training in Sheffield on the Friday morning when I found out the bid was accepted. It was all hectic but it was a massive sigh of relief.

“It’s about coming to a club I’ve played at many times and not always enjoyed playing here as an away player, so I’m looking forward to experiencing it on the right side.

“Since I signed I’ve put things on social media and the fans here have been brilliant and welcomed me. I’d like to thank them for that, it’s much appreciated.

“So far so good and I’m looking forward to the weekend.”
