THE FAMILY of a mum-of-two who went missing almost two weeks ago are now desperate for any news, as there have been no sightings of her since the day she left her home.

Alice King, 37, left the family home in Nunhead that she shares with her parents and two sons aged thirteen and three-years-old.

Wearing jeans, a white top and a blue cardigan, Alice went out at 3pm on Friday, August 24 without her mobile phone and purse, but did take her bank card with her.

She was then spotted on Manwood Road, Crofton Park, at around 4.30pm.

Speaking to the News Alice's sister Amy said, apart from a sighting at the far end of Ladywell Road in Lewisham at 7pm on the same day and the fact she withdrew £80, no more information had come in since she vanished.

Royal Mail needs to sort out an alternative

S

orting offices may not be on many people’s radars as an area of concern, but that is until they get a card through their door saying their parcel could not be delivered that’s when they realise that convenience is the name of the game.

This week we report that the Silvester Road Royal Mail sorting office in East Dulwich is to close and move to Highshore Road in Peckham, despite an outcry from residents and MP Helen Hayes.

Royal Mail says that the Silvester Road office is no longer ‘fit for purpose’, that it’s not big enough to handle the amount of parcels that go through it and that it lacks parking spaces.

Local residents had complained at Christmas of queues up to two hours long and not enough staff.

So residents must be annoyed at the prospect of having to travel to Peckham to pick up their undelivered parcels.

And surely the extra volume would mean that the Highshore Road sorting office would now have many more people waiting to collect their deliveries?

Royal Mail says that no one will have to travel to Highshore Road if they’re unable to make the journey. It says customers can nominate a neighbour, re-arrange delivery or have items sent to a different address in the same area.

But waiting for a re-arranged delivery is a frustrating experience. Many people actually prefer to get their delivery quickly, and that’s where the sorting office comes in.

MP Helen Hayes has said Royal Mail should provide a replacement collection facility in SE22, and we agree. This way Royal Mail’s plans may get residents’ stamp of approval.

A WOMAN was arrested at Notting Hill Carnival after slapping a Peckham police officer's bum.

Inspector Owen Pyle (pictured), from Peckham police, took to twitter to share his outrage that the woman thought it was acceptable to 'sexually assault' him

on the job.

His tweet quickly went viral and has now been shared nearly 500 times and liked by more than two thousand people.

But not everyone was supportive with some commentators saying he over-reacted, while others praised him for taking a stand against harassment and double standards.

Barking mad council signage leaves dog walkers confused ROTHERHITHE

Alice left the house without telling anyone where she was going, or why she was going out.

“Alice we are here for you whenever you are ready.”

“We can listen, talk you through what help you need, pass a message for you and help you to be safe," Amy said in her appeal.

Posters have been distributed all over the area by an army of worried friends, who have also taken to social media and according to Amy have even got celebrities to share her picture on Intragram, unfortunately without any response so far.

"We are so worried," Amy added as she was making her way from her home in Hastings to be with the family in London.

“I am continuing to urge Royal Mail to put public service ahead of profit, provide a replacement collection facility in SE22, and to halt its programme of closures which are so damaging for communities and which have the biggest impact on the most vulnerable.”

SORT IT OUT! POSTAL OFFICE WILL MOVE

THE ROYAL Mail sorting office at East Dulwich will move to Peckham next month, despite an outcry from residents.

The move to Highshore Road will go ahead on September 17 in what the Royal Mail says is an efficiency drive as the current Silvester Road site is not ‘fit for purpose’.

It claims the move will have ‘no impact on deliveries to our customers’ and ‘no job losses’ for the 36 workers based at the sorting office serving SE22.

It says Silvester Road is no longer big enough to handle the number of parcels it receives and lacks parking space for its vehicles – whereas at Peckham’s office there is ‘ample’ room.

A press release issued on August 20 confirmed: “This is part of Royal Mail’s ongoing transformation of its business to increase the efficiency of its operation as well as providing delivery

Drivers see red as temporary traffic lights make roads a ‘total mess’

PECKHAM: Temporary traffic lights and huge tailbacks are frustrating drivers in Peckham - as the council says Rye Lane should return to normal by the end of this week.

Road users have taken to twitter to share their frustration with the temporary signals at the junction of Rye Lane and Copeland Road, which they say are creating 'permanent tail backs' and have made the roads 'a total mess'.

The temporary signals were put in place last month while the council renovates the pavement and kerb as part of its usual maintenance work.

But drivers say the temporary signals are poorly timed and making delays more likely - creating a bottleneck through Rye Lane and neighbouring roads.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for environment, transport management and air quality, said: “We are currently renovating our pavements as part of our footway refurbishment programme, this looks to create improved, safe and comfortable walkways for our residents.

"These temporary traffic lights are essential for the safety of the workers carrying out these improvements.

“We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused but can confirm that it will be short lived and the signals at the junction of Rye Lane will revert to their usual operation by the end of this week. Further works will continue along Copeland Road until the end of the month, but these will allow normal operation of the traffic signals at the junction of Peckham Rye.”

Helping kids traumatised by spate of killings

CALVARY TEMPLE Pentecostal church held a prayer walk in the aftermath of the quadruple stabbing on the nearby Elmington Estate in Camberwell, as knife crime continues to escalate across London.

Pastor David Sappleton said the Pentecostal church based on Councillor Street had decided to hold its first prayer walk at 7.30pm on Friday, August 24, to coincide with youth group sessions and "get onto the streets and pray against the atrocities and senseless loss of lives among our teenagers and young people".

AT THE Rachel Leigh Community Hall on Camberwell’s Brandon Estate, a children’s charity is helping children traumatised by the spate of fatal shootings and stabbings this year.

iiChild, founded by community worker Elaine Joseph, ran a summer camp from July 30 to August 24 for youngsters aged five to seventeen.

From 10am to 4pm, Elaine and her team served up breakfast and lunch to between sixty and seventy kids, many of whom rely on free school meals during term time.

Two days a week they were taken out on special day trips including swimming, laser quest, trampolining, crazy golf, soft play and a visit to Vauxhall City Farm.

“Our aim was to provide the young people with a safe place, relieve their trauma through engaging them in activities that would restore joy, happiness and a sense of normal childhood,” Elaine told the News.

A series of tragic murders have rocked the estate this year, including the death of seventeen-year-old Rhyhiem Barton, and his friend 23-year-old Sidique Kamara

who was stabbed to death on the same road – Warham Street – where Rhyhiem was found.

Both were drill rappers in the Moscow 17 group, whose violent lyrics and ongoing feud with Peckham based gang Zone 2 is believed to be behind a series of tit-for-tat attacks.

Elaine says many children – and adults – have been left emotionally scarred by the tragedies.

“One of the boys who came along to our sessions was singing M17 songs,” she told the News. “He got upset, saying he knew lots of people who have died.

“He is thirteen.”

Over the next month she and the iiChild team spent more and more time with him, finding ways to help him work through his feelings in a positive way.

She described the atmosphere in the first sessions as ‘calm but tense’, but said the children gradually opened up and began socialising well together.

“When the children came and they saw what was available, they got so excited.

“At first they were still sombre, but by the end of the first week they were beginning to relax and realising this is a safe place.”

By growing the range of events on offer the charity aims to ‘form a community’

around the Rachel Leigh Hall, which has recently re-opened after some muchneeded cleaning up and maintenance work.

One new initiative is a mother and baby group, Learn and Play, held from August 28-31, and free to mums and kids under ten.

Long term, iiChild hopes to put on a homework club for after school, and a parents group, with support from Southwark’s Anti-Knife Crime Forum, and funding from Southwark Council.

Although the summer holidays are over, the charity wants to give kids more opportunities and experiences to help them develop – socially as well as academically.

“We are bringing the children out of their trauma and into a new world - a bigger world,” Elaine said.

‘Habitual knife carrier’ banned from Southwark postcodes

POLICE HAVE shared details of areas 'habitual knife carrier' Kevin Aka-Kadjo will be banned from entering after he serves his fourteenmonth sentence.

The nineteen-year-old (b. 30.03.99) from the Elmington Estate was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, August 22, for driving offences and possessing two bladed weapons.

He will spend fourteen months in prison for dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, possession of a hunting knife, possession of a machete and handling stolen goods.

Police also handed him a criminal behaviour order, to stop him from going to specific areas.

The order will be in place indefinitely.

Detective Inspector Luke Williams, from Southwark Police, said: “The use of criminal behaviour orders is another method used by the police to prevent continued offending.

"Upon release from custody Mr Aka-

Kadjo will not be allowed to enter a number of areas within Southwark and Lambeth.

"Local officers will be on the lookout for Mr Aka-Kadjo in these areas.

"Mr Aka-Kadjo is prohibited from entering parts of SE17, SE8, SE15 & SE5 including the Brandon Estate.

"I urge the community to inform us if they witness Mr Aka-Kadjo in one of the excluded zones so we can take robust action.

HUNDREDS GATHERED to pay their respects to 23-year-old Joshua Boadu, who died after being stabbed in Bermondsey.

Some 500 people turned out to say their goodbyes to the apprentice engineer, known affectionately as SJ, during his funeral at Walworth Methodist Church on August 23.

His coffin was carried to the church in a horse-drawn carriage and doves and balloons were released into the sky in his memory.

Joshua’s older brother, Jeffrey, 29, said his family was “overwhelmed” by the number of people who turned up on the day.

“A lot people from Bermondsey came to my mum’s house to follow the family limousine, which my mum really appreciated,” he said.

“She knew Joshua was quite popular because every day people were coming to see how he was doing when he was in the hospital but even more people came to the funeral so she was quite overwhelmed and it was a big comfort.

“I feel like everyone is in a better place

now after the funeral but obviously I feel once the people who did it are caught that will give us a little bit more closure.

“My dad will be asking have the police updated me on anything, so in the back of their minds my parents are always thinking ‘have these people been caught yet?’.”

A murder investigation was launched after Joshua was stabbed outside Helen Taylor House in Linsey Street during a broad daylight attack on June 11.

He was put on life support at King’s College Hospital where his family kept a vigil at his bedside for eleven days, but he sadly passed away after his heart stopped beating.

RHYHIEM BARTON was permanently excluded at just eight and had attended five schools before the age of fifteen, his friend and mentor claimed in this week’s Panorama episode on the Brandon Estate teenager's fatal shooting in May of this year.

While being interviewed for Murder on the Streets - broadcast on BBC one on Monday, at 8.30pm, Rhyhiem's close friend and mentor, Sayce Holmes-Lewis, said: "When a school or organisation decides to exclude permanently an eightyear-old young, black male, you are setting him up to fail.

"The stereotypical journey, it is a school to prison pipeline - or a school to death pipeline."

The documentary raises questions about what could have been done to keep Rhyhiem safe.

The teenager's mother had sent him to Jamaica for ten months after a near-miss attack when he was allegedly stabbed close to the heart.

Friends claim Rhyhiem had been chased with machetes and left the country for his own safety after becoming involved in the Moscow 17 drill rap group and rapping under the name 'GB'.

He returned in February 2018 against the wishes of his family to pursue his dreams of making music - but was found shot on Warham Street on May 5 after shots were heard fired on nearby Cooks Road.

In harrowing footage, his mother Pretana Morgan is seen washing the sawdust from the crime scene, and then later cradling his lifeless body in a funeral parlour, before repatriating his body to Jamaica for burial.

"Anything he takes up, he strives at", his mother said, gazing at his drawings and listening to his music.

Since his death, Moscow 17 lead rapper Sidique Kamara, known by his alias at SK or Incognito, is also dead after being stabbed on the very same road where his friend Rhyhiem was found.

And although a man was charged with 23-year-old's Sidique's murder, the police are yet to charge anyone with murdering Rhyhiem.

TWO PEOPLE were hospitalised after a serious crash on the Old Kent Road on Sunday night.

Images from the scene show one car flipped upside down next to another vehicle with a crumpled bumper near the junction with Glengall Road.

A spokesperson for the Met confirmed that officers were called by paramedics at 9.14pm to a collision believed to involve two cars. Two ambulances, two cars, a response officer and the air ambulance response car all raced to the scene to treat two injured people.

Both casualties were rushed to a major trauma centre.

A Met spokesperson said their injuries were believed to be “non life-threatening”.

Their current condition is unknown.

Police say the road re-opened at around 11pm the same night, and as yet no arrests have been made.

A WOMAN was stabbed in the shoulder in Dulwich on Sunday evening, in the latest broad daylight knife attack in Southwark.

Police say they were called by paramedics to Acacia Grove, near West Dulwich station, following reports of a stabbing at 6.34pm on Sunday,

September 2.

The victim is believed to be in her 20s.

A Met spokesperson said: "A female was discovered with a small puncture wound to her shoulder and arm.

"Her injuries are not life-threatening or life-changing."

Police have made no arrests and enquiries are continuing.

A THIEF made off with stolen cash during an armed robbery at a Camberwell Tesco on Saturday morning.

The robber threatened security staff who were transporting cash to the ATM during a delivery at around 8am with a large knife and demanded they give him money.

He then fled the scene with an unknown amount. No-one was injured during the burglary.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Police were called at approximately 07:55hrs on Saturday, 1 September to reports of an

armed, cash in transit robbery during a delivery to the ATM, located at Tesco Express, Southampton Road, SE15.

“The male suspect is reported to have approached security guards making the cash delivery, threatening them with a large knife, demanding the cash they were handling.

“He then made off from the scene with a quantity of cash.”

Shopper Paula Lorgelly, who was in the branch half an hour later, said: “As far as I know, the cash was being dropped off by a Loomis van and they were robbed. I think this was 8am.

“Police sealed off the estate off Sedgmoor Place and had dogs searching.

The chopper was up from 8:45 for about an hour maybe more.”

A Tesco’s spokesperson said: “We are assisting police with their inquiries following an incident at our Southampton Way Express on Saturday evening.”

Officers from Met's Flying Squad are investigating but there have yet been no arrests and enquiries continue.

In November, thieves tried to rip out the ATM at the branch in a failed burglary, putting the ATM out of action.

DETECTIVES INVESTIGATING a phone shop raid on Peckham's Rye Lane in the early hours of Wednesday morning have charged a suspect.

Twenty-five-year-old Troy BowesAdolfess from Hamilton Road, Croydon, was charged with conspiracy to commit burglary on Thursday, August 30.

He appeared at Camberwell Magistrates' Court the same day and will be sent to trial at the Old Bailey on Thursday, September 27.

Another suspect, a 24-year-old man, was arrested by Trident officers on Wednesday, August 29 in connection with the firearm offence when two officers were assaulted and later threatened with an aimed gun.

He has been released under investigation.

MP NEIL Coyle has slammed Transport for London, saying he fears residents living beside Rotherhithe Tunnel face having ‘horrific’ toxic pollution levels pumped into their homes.

One of the tunnel’s two vents is located next to homes in Rotherhithe Street, where residents are said to have noticed the vent was opening to let out pollution more frequently a couple of years ago.

After joining residents at a meeting with Transport for London (TfL), the Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP told the News the company admitted pollution levels in the tunnel had risen – and that they had not monitored them properly.

“It was a massive surprise and I couldn’t believe the admission,” he said. “They’ve admitted that they were not monitoring effectively at all.

“The systems they had in place until early 2016 weren’t monitoring the pollution levels properly so drivers, pedestrians and cyclists going in and out of the tunnel weren’t aware that TfL could be putting them all at risk.

“It has left pollution pumped into people’s homes immediately next to the vents.

“The toxicity levels are still horrific.”

TfL said it carried out additional monitoring from November 2017 to

January 2018 as part of a feasibility study into a refurbishment of the tunnel and in response to residents’ concerns over pollution.

Ben Plowden, TfL’s director of strategy and network development, told the News:

“Our monitoring shows that the Rotherhithe Tunnel and surrounding areas suffer from high levels of pollution.

“We are continuing to make improvements wherever possible, including making changes to the ventilation shafts to improve air quality for nearby residents.

“We are also carrying out feasibility studies to understand how we can refurbish the tunnel to reduce air pollution in the long term.

“We remain committed to improving air quality right across the capital through the T-Charge, cleaning up London’s bus and taxi fleet, bringing in the expanded Ultra Low Emissions Zone which will include the Rotherhithe Tunnel in 2021, and encouraging more Londoners to walk and cycle.”

Rotherhithe Tunnel is 110 years old and was designed for horses and carts rather than the volume of traffic using the tunnel today.

There are five permanent environmental monitors evenly spaced along the length of the tunnel.

These are continuously measuring carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and visibility, and will activate the tunnel ventilation system automatically if a threshold is reached.

The tunnel control system was changed in 2016 and the new system has implemented a more effective fan operation cycle.

Adele praises friend for ‘intimate, witty, heart-breaking’ blog

A HEARTRENDINGLY honest blog post about a woman’s experience of postpartum psychosis has helped raise awareness of the little-known condition – with a bit of help from a very famous friend.

Laura Dockrill, a performance poet and illustrator from Brixton, has bravely shared her battle and recovery from the rare illness which affects new mothers.

The thirty-two-year-old posted on the Mother of All Lists blog, curated by Peckham-based Clemmie Telford.

She wrote: “Since having my baby boy in February this year I’ve been suffering from and battling against postpartum psychosis.

“A rare and unpublicised illness that affects one in a thousand women and is seen as a medical emergency.”

Laura had no history of mental illness and said her doctors believe a traumatic birth - with an emergency C-section and five day hospital stay – could have triggered the condition.

“The second I got home and into bed

I was drenched in this overwhelming sense of fear and dread,” she wrote, “Like that Sunday night before school feeling, times a million.

“I felt like I was dying.

“My breath was short and tight, my heart was pounding out of my chest and my stomach churned.

“I turned to my partner Hugo and said ‘something’s not right with me, I don’t know what it is but I’m not okay.”

She described how well-meaning friends told her to try and relax with Netflix and takeaways, suggesting she had a case of the baby blues.

But her anxiety, mania, and fears her son would die became all-consuming.

“I still can’t exactly work out what exactly happened or what form it took on,” she wrote, “all I know is I was completely terrified, lost, confused, scared for myself and my son and that I didn’t trust anybody – I even accused Hugo of kidnapping our baby.

“After my intervention – which was the worst night of my life – I was hospitalised for two weeks away from my son, bleeding from birth, breasts leaking milk and fully out of my head.

“I had no idea where I was.”

With medication, psychotherapy and support from doctors Laura is now back at home and wants to help raise awareness of the treatable condition and help end the stigma of postnatal depression.

“I tried to hide my illness from my family and friends because I was so full with shame and guilt because there is a huge expectation on women to be perfect, glowing mama queens that are all encompassing wonderbeasts that can manage everything,” she said.

Laura hopes her story will help other women come and seek help: “If this post can relate to anybody that is feeling even a shimmer of this and it resonates with them then please speak to somebody and get help.”

According to the NHS, symptoms of postpartum psychosis usually start within two weeks after giving birth and can include hallucinations, manic mood, depression, confusion and behaving out of character.

Doctors do not know why some people develop the condition, but believe a family history of mental health problems, pre-existing conditions like bipolar disorder, or a

traumatic birth or pregnancy could mean some mothers are more at risk.

Most women will make a full recovery.

Laura’s post immediately struck a chord, with readers on Twitter praising her post as ‘brave brutal brilliant and ‘incredibly powerful’.

And Laura’s best friend – who she thanked in her post for her support – was quick to share her support.

Musician Adele posted on Instagram: “This is my best friend. We have been friends for more of our lives than we haven’t.

“She had my beautiful godson six months ago and it was the biggest challenge of her life in more ways than one.

“She has written the most intimate, witty, heart-breaking and articulate piece about her experience of becoming a new mum and being

diagnosed with postpartum psychosis.

“Mamas talk about how you are feeling because in some cases it could save yours or someone else’s life.”

Her post gained more than one million likes, and quickly went viral online. Clemmie, who published Laura’s story on her blog, told the News she hoped Laura’s story would have a lasting impact.

“Maternal Mental Health needs more airtime,” she told the News. “Having a baby is such a vulnerable and complex time, one which all too often leaves women struggling unsupported.

“Honest (and beautifully written) accounts like Laura’s are a way of opening up the conversation and removing stigma.

“If one person who reads the blog is able to spot the symptoms and seek help then it’s a step in the right direction.”

CALLING ALL LOCALS TO HELP COLOUR IN

Number they are trying to beat has nearly trebled

THE HERNE Hill Forum has issued a call to arms for locals to help their community’s name go down in history.

The Forum is aiming to beat the world record for ‘Most contributions to a colour

by numbers’, on a mural that stretches the length of Herne Hill station’s underpass.

The previous record stood at 454 participants.

But now a new record has been set and it is significantly higher – the number to beat is 1,119.

Contributions from pupils at seven local schools is no longer enough to guarantee success.

So, the Forum is calling on the general public to join the attempt and ensure that Herne Hill enters the Guinness World Book of Records.

The Forum is also seeking volunteers to

help on the day, to keep the event running smoothly.

The attempt will take place on Wednesday 12th September, between 48pm.

Besides offering a chance at fame, completion of the mural will be an important step in the larger renovation of Herne Hill’s underpass and station.

Take part in the new giant walking and cycling game

SOUTHWARK WILL become the site of a giant game this autumn, as individuals, families, schools and businesses compete to travel as far as they can – not in a vehicle.

For seven weeks from September 19, four areas in Southwark – Peckham, Old Kent Road, Faraday and North Walworth – will be home to the game, called Beat the Street.

Sensors, known as Beat Boxes, will adorn lampposts across the playing area.

Players earn points for themselves, their team and their borough by tapping their registered Beat the Street fobs on the Beat Boxes.

Participants will be able register in teams, which will be ranked in leaderboards.

Winning teams will win sports and fitness equipment worth hundreds of pounds; individuals can also win ‘Lucky Tap’ prizes, which include

sports and fitness vouchers and experience days.

The game is delivered by Intelligent Health, a company dedicated to creating active communities, on behalf of Southwark Council, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity and Transport for London.

Beat the Street was played by 300,000 people in 2017 in areas including East London, Durham and Dublin. The initiative won a prize at the recent Nudge Awards for promoting active travel in towns and communities.

Councillor Rebecca Lury, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Equalities and Communities in Southwark, said: “We are incredibly excited to be bringing Beat the Street to Southwark and can’t wait to see how far everyone is able to walk, run, cycle and scoot during the six-week challenge.

THE LONDON Bubble Theatre Company has received a grant of nearly £250,000 to expand its programme for older adults.

The Creative Elders programme brings older Southwark residents together to create theatre, dance and music.

Its projects include the Rotherhithe Shed, a practical making space inspired by the Australian Men’s Shed movement, and a weekly drama workshop for people living in sheltered housing.

The programme works with 50 adults over the age of 65 weekly.

With their new grant, London Bubble hope that they will be able to reach 200250 older adults.

They want to connect with people who live alone, but might struggle to access communal social spaces.

This new group will utilise other community spaces across Southwark which are oriented towards older adults.

A NEW documentary is being made about women who worked in Southwark after the Second World War.

“With the Creative Elders Programme, we will use the creative power of theatre to improve mental and physical wellbeing of our older participants.”

Jill, who took part in the programme, shared her enthusiasm for London Bubble’s work: “When you get older, there are activities for older people, but there really aren’t activities quite like this that are really about creativity and it’s just great.

“You forget as you get older that you need to be creative, that it does keep you feeling younger.”

Southwark Community Voices has received a National Lottery grant of nearly £10,000 to make the documentary.

The documentary is entitled “The End of an Era: Women and Work post WWII in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe”.

It will focus on women who worked in factories and for other manufacturers in the area.

Southwark Community Voices want to talk to people whose female relatives worked in the factories before they were closed down.

They are hoping to find stories, photographs and footage from the period.

They are also looking for volunteers

to help with the project.

TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD Sara Zelenak was working in Victoria as an au pair when one Saturday night she went for a drink with a friend in London Bridge, writes Jessie Kolvin.

It is something no Londoner would think twice about. And Sara, an Australian who had been in London only three months but had already adopted it as her home, was no different.

Except that that night, three men attacked London Bridge and Borough Market with a van, and with knives.

In the aftermath, Sara was found on Borough High Street, stabbed in the neck. Identified by her dental records, she was confirmed as one of eight people to have died.

Sara’s parents, Julie and Mark Wallace, explain that she was having “the time of her life” in London. She loved the family she worked for; she had a network of friends, both people she knew from back in Australia and other nannies she had met; she was making the most of London’s proximity to other destinations, having already taken a trip to Ireland.

Her next journey was to be to Paris at the end of June, to reunite with her parents. Milan waited for them after.

Sara couldn’t wait; every message she sent her parents was signed off, ‘Meet you in Paris’.

Her plans were testament to Sara’s openness to new places, new people, new ways of living.

In London she was “experiencing life”, thriving on being fully independent in such an “amazing city”. She was, says her mother, “the happiest she had been in her life”.

Julie had encouraged Sara to travel in her gap year. Both she and her brother had travelled to Europe when they were younger, and knew the joys that come from seeing the world.

Sara had taken up the idea enthusiastically. Her plan was initially to work in Milan; then, at the last minute a job in London became available.

After three months, Sara was so taken with the city that she was considering staying for the longterm. A trip back to her native Australia in July was necessary to celebrate her best friend’s 21st birthday – of first and foremost importance to her was being “involved in people’s lives, friends and family” – but after, she planned to head back to London.

The father of the family for whom she was nannying was even keen to take her on as a PA in his company.

For a young person’s excitement for the future to be so senselessly, hatefully terminated is hard to comprehend.

You could forgive Mark and Julie Wallace for not wanting to return to the city of their daughter’s death when the circumstances were so violent and shocking.

But the people who filled their daughter with a curiosity about and openness to other people and cultures are not prepared to give up on those values.

In London she was ‘experiencing life’, thriving on being fully independent in such an ‘amazing city’.

She was, says her mother, ‘the happiest she had been in her life’

only by “unconditional love”.

It is this love which is behind their charity, Sarz Sanctuary, named for their daughter’s nickname and intended as her legacy.

Their mission is to open a not-forprofit healing centre for people dealing with traumatic grief.

The first will open in Australia, but Julie and Mark plan to bring further centres to London, then Paris.

London may be the site of Julie and Mark’s greatest grief, but they describe it only in terms of hope.

They keep emphasising the UK’s “enormous” support after Sara’s death and the “love and support” their family found in London.

Julie imagines Sarz Sanctuary opening somewhere “peaceful and beautiful” in the UK. “We want to give back a beautiful thing.”

“We adore the country and the

Sara ‘s parents Mark and Julie Wallace culture,” she continues. On arriving in the UK, “we fell in love with the people and they fell in love with us”.

Although they formed many strong relationships in London, the closest was with two policemen from the Met, assigned as the Wallaces’ family liaison officers.

A concept borne out of 9/11, family liaison officers are available to the grieving family 24 hours a day, sharing information and guiding them through the fraught process following a relative’s death.

With one officer in particular, Mark and Julie “formed a bond”. They are so close to James Galvin that he became “instrumental” in the ‘Meet You in Paris’ bike ride.

The bike ride was organised as a fundraiser for Sarz Sanctuary and as a healing process for the family.

Named for Sara’s constant refrain, it

started in London Bridge and ended in Paris a year to the day after Julie and Mark were meant to meet Sara there.

The ride, this year kept for family and close friends, included Mr. Galvin’s family: his son joined the bike ride, and his daughter and her boyfriend took footage to turn into a retrospective film of the fundraiser.

The Wallaces’ friendship with Mr. Galvin in microcosm highlights their determination to “out of a negative thing bring a positive thing”, especially in the way they relate to London.

Their plan to open Sarz Sanctuaries in three countries similarly demonstrates a vision of an inclusive global community, which Sara was so excited to explore.

But Julie and Mark also want to emphasise the importance of small

communities, so valued by their daughter.

“We want to bring people together in their local communities,” says Mark.

“We want to assist and help people who are grieving to become positive people again.

“Then, they can go assist and help people suffering in their local communities.”

In this way, Julie and Mark refuse to let the hatred of the London Bridge attacks become the defining feature of their daughter’s death, or of how they view the world, or of London. With quiet determination and unfailing love and humility, they are instead ensuring that the dominant force to emerge from London Bridge is the generosity and optimism and goodness that inspired their daughter, Sara.

A LONE bugler sounded out the last post in Burgess Park on Monday morning in a commemoration ceremony for a decorated WW1 soldier from Peckham.

The tribute from the Scots Guard Band was in memory of Jack ‘The Lad’ Harvey, who single-handedly saved his company on the Western Front by rushing a machine gun post under heavy fire, shooting two enemy soldiers and bayoneting another.

The heroic soldier then continued along the trenches before compelling 37 enemy soldiers to surrender in their trench on his own. The daring endeavour spared his company heavy casualties.

The private’s brave acts on September 2, 1918 just north of Péronne, France, earned him the Victoria Cross from King George V in March 1919.

The ceremony was part of a UK Government First World War Centenary campaign, which sees commemorative paving stones laid at the birth places of Victoria Cross (VC) recipients of the war.

The private’s family members were at the ceremony to see the stone laid, including his grandson, Nick Harvey, who read the citation, his granddaughters, Jacky and Rae, and his great granddaughter, Lily Stephens, who read the poem For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon.

The service was led by Father David Vyvyan of St Phillip's Camberwell, alongside the Worshipful Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Catherine Rose and Lance Sergeant Johnson Beharry VC COG. Cllr Richard Livingstone, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for environment, transport management and air quality, said:

“Today’s event celebrates one of the Old Kent Road's true heroes, Jack Harvey. It reminds us both of Jack’s exceptional bravery and the countless great sacrifices made by Southwark residents during the First World War. “Today brought together Jack's family, representatives of the army and local people to remember and

honour our heroes, both past and present, and recall the values they stand for – courage, respect, integrity and pride.”

The brave soldier – who was just 27 when he rescued his company – was born on August 24, 1891, in Peckham, before joining the 1/22 Battalion, The London Regiment

(The Queen's) in November 1914.

The decorated veteran served on the Western Front including in major battles at Ypres, The Somme and Passchendaele.

He married Rose Maud (nee Neale) in 1915, before returning to Camberwell at the end of the war where they had one son, Jack Victor

Charles.

The couple lived in Peckham and Camberwell including 34 Harling Street, which is now part of Burgess Park and Lidgate Road, before moving to Surrey.

The war hero died on August 15, 1940, aged 48, and is now buried at Redstone Cemetery, Redhill.

The untold story of women and the cathedral BOROUGH

A TOUR will delve into the forgotten stories of women connected to Southwark Cathedral, including Queen Mary I, who ordered four people to be condemned to their deaths within its walls.

To mark the centenary of women getting the right to vote, the cathedral in Borough has uncovered details about the lives of Victorian pioneers such as Octavia Hill, Ada Salter and Isabella Gilmore, and benefactors including Dorothy Applebee and Elizabeth Newcomen.

As part of the Women of Southwark – The Untold Story Tour, visitors will also learn about the cathedral’s early convent, the lives of those living in the borough’s brothels, and the impact of Queen Mary I on the life of the cathedral.

The cathedral’s visits and tours officer Ruth Miller, who organised the event, told the News: “There’s those particular people, those figures like Mary I whom we know sort of had a turbulent time.

“We’ll talk about how she came to the throne in the Protestant period as a strong Catholic, how the Bishop of Winchester had fallen back into favour with the crown at that time and how a lot of people were sent to their deaths.

“One of the things that has become incredibly apparent while researching this is that there are lots of women buried here at the cathedral who left a legacy of housing for poor women and men, and for

some reason we don’t seem to think about the importance of women with housing.

“Octavia and Ada, who are connected locally to the cathedral but aren’t buried here, both did significant work on housing and for some reason there’s invisibility with women’s roles and sometimes it can be because of their status or that they are a house wife.

“We know there was quite a big social status with where you sat in church in the

pews and if your husband died and your status changed you were expected to change your pew in the church,” she added.

The cathedral is home to a number of historic objects donated by benefactors including a candelabra made by Dorothy Appleby, who also left behind money for a school to be set up in the area when she died at the end of the seventeenth century.

A number of corbels are currently being made for the cathedral, and one of those is of suffragette Evelyn Sharp (1869 to 1955), who set up a café and community

space for working women on Borough High Street.

“I think also so often when you research these things you start to find there are more and more stories and more and more significant people,” said Ruth.

“My favourite part of their wills is when they talk about their jewellery and who they’re leaving it to.

“In her will, Ann Austin – who left behind a legacy of two houses for elderly women – said King James I owed her husband money, which is just one example of men and women in the cathedral connected with the royal household. It’s quite a strange thing that they’re brushing quite closely with the king and queen.”

Women of Southwark – The Untold Story Tour will be held at Southwark Cathedral from 11am-12pm on Saturday, September 8.

Couple get life-saving transplants A

boyfriend and girlfriend are looking forward to their future together after receiving the same type of ‘double’ transplant within weeks of each other.

Michelle Commons and Steven Jarvis both underwent combined kidney and pancreas transplants at Guy’s Hospital in May after suffering from chronic kidney failure caused by type 1 diabetes.

Steven and Michelle were both diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as young children, causing a number of health complications from an early age.

High blood sugar levels increase the risk of developing serious eye conditions and Steven’s sight has progressively deteriorated since 2010. He is now registered blind, while Michelle is partially sighted.

Michelle has had two heart attacks and a heart bypass operation, due to her diabetes.

The pair met around a year ago while they were having dialysis, a procedure which replicates the function of the kidneys. Patients usually need dialysis three times a

week, for four to five hours at a time.

By that time Michelle and Steven were both waiting for a transplant because their kidney function was so poor. A combined kidney and pancreas transplant will ‘cure’ their diabetes because a healthy pancreas produces insulin.

Former van driver Steven, 34, said: “When my consultant at Guy’s first said a combined kidney and pancreas transplant could cure my diabetes it was like a dream. After the operation it felt surreal knowing I had a working pancreas, that my blood sugar levels were normal and I no longer needed insulin injections. My skin was brighter and my eyes looked healthier too.”

Account manager Michelle, 37, said: “The transplants have brought us even closer. We’ve looked after each other as we’ve been recovering at the same time. Now we can go to restaurants and eat what we want, and plan holidays and weekends away. We’re really looking forward to our future together.”

A TEAM of patients and families celebrated a triumphant trip to the British Transplant Games with a medal count of 61.

The team, Evelina VIPs, was made up of 35 patients who received care at Evelina London Children’s Hospital following a kidney transplant. The games celebrate organ donation and aim to increase public awareness of donation.

Dr Nick Ware, a transplant consultant, volunteered at the games for the first time. He said: “Listening to families and seeing children who were previously too unwell to run around now competing at sports was amazing.”

“However, people are still dying while they are waiting for suitable donor organs so we encourage people to sign the Organ Donor Register so we can carry out even more life-saving transplants.”

Thumbs up for patient experience

GUY’S AND St Thomas’ has been rated above the national average in all categories of patient-led assessments which were published on 16 August.

Results of the annual Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) also showed that the Trust had improved in five out of six scores compared with last year, with the rating for providing a dementia-friendly environment improving by nearly 7%.

Teams of patient assessors and staff visited Guy’s Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital, Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Lambeth Community Care Centre, Minnie Kidd House in Balham and Pulross Intermediate Care Centre in Brixton.

More than 50 patient assessors, which also includes families, visitors and patient advocates, together with staff, undertook assessments

• 99.73% for cleanliness (national average 98.5%) • 93.48% for food and hydration (national average 90.2%)

• 90.37% for privacy, dignity and well-being (national average 84.2%)

• 95.91% for the condition, appearance and maintenance of facilities (national average 94.3%)

• 84.99% for dementiafriendly environment (national average 78.9%) between April and May this year.

Crowds lining up for DRAG show In the first institutional exhibition of its kind, DRAG: Self-Portraits and Body Politics attempts to explore drag culture as empowering – as a way to challenge not only gender but class, race and identity too, writes Rosie O’Connell...

YolanDa Brown brings her Fusion to Southbank Saxophonist YolanDa Brown is renowned for her unique fusion of Reggae, Jazz and Soul.

Having toured with artists as diverse as Diana Krall, The Temptations, Billy Ocean, and Julian Marley, as well as collaborating with Jools Holland’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, YolanDa brings her incendiary live show to the Royal Festival Hall. The concert will mark a decade in the music business for the musician.

Ms Brown’s 2017 album Love Politics War was released to critical acclaim and went straight to number one in the UK Jazz Charts. YolanDa commented: “I wanted to create an album that reflected the current state of the world with its political tensions and its numerous uprisings and protests - with the underlying message that love conquers all.”

This concert will be followed by a series

of dates across the UK, where YolanDa will pay homage to all those who have supported her over the last decade. As she explained: “My journey in music has been the most amazing rollercoaster! I have travelled the world and met the most amazing audiences. We have laughed, cried, danced and hugged each other.

Being an independent artist, I am grateful for the hard work my team have put in over the years and the love from everyone that has bought a ticket for a concert, downloaded an album, every interview by a journalist and every message of encouragement on my social networks”.

Join YolanDa and her special guests (including the premier solo percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie), on what will undoubtedly be a night to remember.

It seems like pretty good timing too for the Hayward curators to be presenting such an exhibition, with gender politics being discussed and debated more and more openly within mainstream culture.

The exhibition consists of work from a wide array of artists, from the wellestablished Pierre Molinier, Valie Export and Robert Mapplethorpe to the perhaps lesser known younger generation of artists using drag to create art, such as Adam Christensen, Oreet Ashery and Victoria Sin. Presented non-chronologically the

exhibition displays a range of voices rather than a linear history of drag creating a fluid space of work connected by one common thread.

Despite the commonality of drag throughout the pieces here, each has its own story or comment to make, exploring fundamental cultural shifts for this community throughout the past 50 years.

A diverse range of themes and topics are addressed here, from challenging gender constructs to commentary on the AIDS crisis and drag as a means to undermine racial, cultural and classist oppression.

Most of the works in the show are photographs though there are some works that use other media, such as audiovisual and performance.

Throughout the show’s run there are to be three guided tours led by drag performers from the London scene,

Timberlina, ShayShay and That Ray, which I imagine will be as entertaining as it will be educational.

While pioneering in its efforts to bring drag into the artistic mainstream, and despite offering an interesting and diverse range of works, the exhibition seems rather modest. It’s nothing big or bold or loud or lively. That said, regardless of its size and modest ambition, if the private view queues are anything to go by there will be lines around the block for the rest of the run and rightly so; this is still a pivotal moment in drag history and that should be celebrated.

Suzi Ruffell gears up for comedy festival COMEDIAN SUZI Ruffell was born in Portsmouth but like a lot of people she headed to the capital and now lives in east London ‘But don’t let that put you off,’ she says only half-jokingly, writes Michael Holland...

Suzi has been performing as a stand up comedian for about eight years, and she says that for five of those years she was ‘utterly terrified’. So what kept her putting herself through such turmoil for so long, I asked: ‘The buzz of being on stage and making strangers laugh was addictive, so it was probably after my first couple of gigs that I thought I want to do this for the rest of my life.’

As well as being a primary source for Suzi’s comedy her family is very supportive of her career, but Suzi tells me: ‘Lucky they are, really, as they feature heavily in my set…’

Ms Ruffell likes all types of stand ups, and reveals she has found inspiration from ‘Alan Carr to James Acaster, and has been inspired by Maria Bamford, Josh Widdicombe, Katherine Ryan, Romesh Ranganathan and Nish Kumar amongst many others’, and her eight years on the circuit has honed her skills down to a funny fine art, with a routine that most people can relate to because she mocks both working and middle class.

She will soon be appearing at the 10th Greenwich Comedy Festival along with some her favourite comics, so for insurance made sure I mentioned that ‘the line up at the Greenwich Comedy Festival features not only

comics that inspire me but also some of the best comedians in the country…’

After Greenwich Suzi will tour the UK before a well-earned holiday: ‘It’s a trip to Spain with my mum which is bound to inspire some material.’

Roaring at The Den for 30 years history

MILLWALL'S RECENT match with Derby County at The Den, along with providing the Lions’ first win of the new campaign, saw publication of the 287th edition of the legendary Millwall fanzine The Lion Roars, which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary, writes Neil Bradley...

Conceived during the 1988/89 season, TLR was at the forefront of the football fanzine revolution, with its founders, Paul Casella and the late Carl Prosser, prompted by an article that appeared in the Daily Mirror, ahead of Millwall's FA Cup tie with Arsenal, claiming that Millwall fans planned to steal the famous Highbury clock.

As ridiculous as the story sounded it did not prevent Arsenal barricading the clock with scaffolding and corrugated iron, and the police posting officers atop it ahead of the match. Even so, Casella and Prosser claimed that the story, though laughable, and clearly untrue despite the newspaper quoting sources 'close to Millwall Football Club’, was a story too far. And so they set out to redress the balance, producing their first edition of The Lion Roars at the start of the 1988/89 campaign, becoming one of only five titles that were to spawn the football fanzine phenomena that followed during the next decade.

Not that they were welcomed with open arms at The Den, and TLR was once banned from the Millwall training ground. Undeterred, though, the fanzine prevailed, and at its height was selling more than 3,000 copies, which was phenomenal considering Millwall were averaging crowds of little more than 10,000.

And whilst other Millwall fanzines have come and gone - No One Likes Us and Tales from Senegal Fields, along with the more recent demise of CBL Magazine - The Lion Roars has prevailed, continuing to offer an independent voice to Millwall fans, and challenging the football club, the footballing authorities, the police and the press whenever they've felt that Millwall fans had suffered injustice.

The Lion Roars has always had that spirit of punk about it; you could tell by those first editions that it was influenced by the likes of Sniffin' Glue, which itself featured regular contributions from Millwall fan Danny Baker. Paul Casella and Carl Prosser, though, were always serious about their journalistic efforts, even if the rest of the fanzine was generously given over to a collection of anarchic wanna-be writers, myself included.

In fact, I always thought it endured as a result of their respective commitment to producing more than just another throwaway fanzine, with strong journalistic content, high quality production values, and some incredible advertising streams and sales income.

Paul and Carl were great in terms of their encouragement of new writers, always offering up advice and, more importantly, generously allowing us a

blank page in TLR to vent our creative spleens.

I remember when Millwall first mentioned a move away from The Den to its current home in Zampa Road, TLR commissioned its own design blueprint for the new stadium and came up with a plan that would have seen a bigger capacity, which Paul Casella was convinced could have been built at a fraction of the eventual cost of The 'New' Den. Perhaps it is that groundbreaking nature of TLR that has seen it endure for the last thirty years. Certainly, as a campaigning fans’ publication, their greatest achievement was securing permanent supporter representation at Millwall in the shape of the Fan On

The Board, although they were also responsible for convincing former chairman Peter Mead to appoint Jimmy Nichol as manager to replace Mick McCarthy, following Nichol’s European success with Raith Rovers.

Remarkably, considering its humble beginnings, TLR has continued in that pioneering tradition: It was the first football fanzine to feature a player with his own column in the form of Millwall favourite Marc Bircham. It was the first fanzine to offer a free flexi-disc, in the same way that the music papers often did, with the single No One Likes Us by Deptford cult, indie band Wubble-U. And it was the first football fanzine to boast a female editor with long time

contributor, Ayse Smith, who has now been at the helm for nine years.

Ayse recalls how she found herself in the role: ‘Former Southwark News reporter Stephen Eighteen had recently taken over the editorship from Paul Casella, after Paul, had had enough after twenty-one years, and who convinced Stephen it made money. After three months, however, Stephen realised it was a bottomless pit and decided to pass it on to someone else. That's where I came in.

I didn't want it to stop after all these years, so I just grabbed the bull by the horns and got on with the job… Not that it was all plain sailing; having been a regular TLR contributor the step-up to editor was a challenge.’

Asked as to whether TLR could survive another 30 years, Ayse thinks sadly not. ‘I don't think it can survive, what with free news at everyone's fingertips nowadays. Once those who buy it regularly - usually because they collect it - are gone, there just won't be enough sales to keep it going, especially in terms of casual readers.’

It would be such a pity to see it go as it has been an important part of my writing life for more than twenty-five years. Whatever its fate, though, I’m truly glad I was part of it.

his month will see recent student leavers deliberating on if Further Education is for them, if they should consider Government backed Apprenticeship Schemes or perhaps gain work experience in the industry of their choice.

With property prices falling owing to the uncertainty of how the economy will be affected following Brexit, Developers and Landlords are turning to new strategies to keep their investments secure and maximise profit.

Tara Taylor of Beckhams Property Services explains, this has led to a surge in development around London, especially Forest Hill, which is accessible to London Bridge in as little as 19 minutes. The streets are lined with houses undergoing renovations, including loft conversions, rear extensions and complete refurbishments. Locals are excited that the area is finally receiving the much needed rejuvenation it deserves. With new business owners flocking to the area, searching to establish themselves in a quirky, culturally diverse

neighbourhood.

When searching for a career, it can be difficult choosing the most financially and emotionally rewarding pathway. Apprenticeships currently available via the Government backed portal include training schemes in steel work, bricklaying and roofing. Although public sector construction employment has fallen, private industrial, private housing and infrastructure have seen employment remain steady.

According to the ONS, now is a great time to join the construction industry, as construction output increased by 0.9% in the three months to June 2018.

I entered into the construction sector in 2008, during what should have been the worst time to do so, following the recession. I had a limited education, yet wanted to work in Finance where entry roles started on as little as £12,000. At the time, I would have loved the chance to work my way up the ladder, however, opportunities were limited. I was competing against people with over 10 years’ experience who had been made redundant from senior roles.

At that point I was offered a lifeline,

as an old colleague explained regardless of age and experience, there was a shortage of Health and Safety Inspectors and Project Managers construction, with salaries often in the region of £40,000.

Despite being only 21 years old, I was hooked on finding out more and secured a role as a reactive maintenance scheduler. This taught me the basics about different trades and what paperwork, were required to commence works for each role.

I witnessed how the property market took a tumble in 2008, yet construction continued and I see history repeating itself today.

Everyday I work with experienced Project Managers, each suffering skills shortages. You’d be surprised and think the shortages apply only to skilled trades such as Electrical Engineers, but no, even Labourers are equally desired.

With employers crying out for talented individuals, eager to work their way up the ladder and who show ambition and initiative. Office Managers expect to earn in the region of £25,000, but why settle for that when in London, I’ve seen 25 year olds managing major

construction projects and earning in excess of £50,000.

MILLWALL LIONESSES captain Leanne Cowan is excited about the new era at the club ahead of the first FA Women’s Championship fixture this weekend.

The Lionesses are aiming to bounce back from their defeat against Charlton last weekend in the FA WSL Cup and start their league campaign with a victory when they host Lewes WFC at Princes Park in Dartford on Sunday afternoon.

Lewes will also be eager to start the league season in positive fashion after being inconsistent in their two matches in the FA WSL Cup. In their opening match, they thrashed Charlton 5-0, but then they followed that up with a 4-1 defeat to West Ham. Having just been promoted following their fifth-place finish in the Southern Premier last season, Lewes have recruited a lot of new players to try and compete at this level.

The Lionesses appointed Pedro Martinez Losa as their new director of football in the summer and Chris Phillips took over as first-team boss.

The club will be competing against the might of the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham this season.

Cowan has been with the Lionesses since 2005 and has been given the captain’s armband by Phillips.

“There is a fresh feeling around the club now, they [Martinez Losa and Phillips] seem set on doing things right this year,” Cowan told the News. “We also have shirt sponsors now which helps us financially.

“We have teams in our league who are pretty much set up to play in WSL 1, but decided to apply for our league. I don’t know if that’s to take the pressure off their players so that they can get into a winning mentality, but the aim is to match them and fight with them for the title.

“We are always seen as the underdog, so if we ever get a result against a team Twitter goes mental. We practically have a whole new squad so teams will be looking at us thinking an easy three points. But it is just a Millwall thing, we thrive and do better as an underdog and I cannot wait to get started.”

Last season the club ran into financial difficulties and had to crowd fund to raise money to allow them to complete their campaign.

Another Lioness veteran, Georgie Giddings, believes that did have a damaging effect on the squad.

“We were nineteen unbeaten last year and had won sixteen of those nineteen, but the day we found out about the financial problems it all went downhill,” Giddings said.

“The solidarity of the group went and if you weren’t involved last year you wouldn’t have understood the bond

between the girls to achieve that unbeaten run.

“But now we have a load of new girls who are just as talented and have settled in well.

“I don’t think there is a huge emphasis on there being a new manager as such because everything is new. We have a new chairwoman [Diane Culligan], a new director of football and a new stadium.”

Giddings will have to wait a little longer than her team-mates to start the season as she is serving a two-match suspension she picked up on the final day against Durham.

PECKHAM RYE FC’s debut in the Woolwich and Eltham Sunday Football Alliance was a triumphant one as they emerged with a 2-0 victory against Heath.

She hopes playing home games in Dartford – and playing on a grass pitch rather than the 4G surface at St Paul’s – will benefit the club.

She said: “The move to Princes Park suits the development of this club, playing on grass will help us improve massively.

“We want people to come and watch us and, as you know, there are loads of parking facilities at Dartford and it’s close to the M25.

“So hopefully we get the support we need.”

The fixture against Lewes kicks off at 2pm.

Initially, neither team could really make an impact on the game but that changed in the 30th minute when the hosts had a player sent to the sin bin.

Temporary dismissals are being trialled during the 2018-19 season before becoming mandatory for all leagues at Step 7 and below from the 2019-20 season.

Peckham took advantage and brought on John Woolley. The centre-forward immediately played a through-ball to pick out Charlie Eldridge’s run, and he made no mistake to give the away side the lead.

Five minutes later, Peckham doubled their advantage after a moment of magic from Eldridge on the left wing as he twisted and turned his marker before he crossed to the back post and Anthony Denis finished.

The second half was excitingly end to end. Debutant goalkeeper Mick Holman was rarely called upon, but when he was finally needed he made a superb doublesave and then a sensational block from Danny Warne twelve yards out protected the two-goal cushion. Heath offered little else as Peckham Rye comfortably closed the game out.

They were the only team in the league to keep a clean sheet on the opening day and are fifth in the table.

SURREY CONTINUED their march towards their first County Championship since 2002 after another convincing innings victory over a hapless Nottinghamshire team who had started the game in third place.

Opening batsman Mark Stoneman set up the platform for this impressive win

with a season’s best 144, batting throughout the first day with plenty of support from Ben Foakes (48), Will Jacks (48) and Tom Curran (43).

Curran was playing his first four-day game this season, and he also chipped in with six match wickets.

Curran is pleased that he has put his injury problems behind him. “It’s good to be playing four-day again and to be able to contribute. I’ve had a few niggles but I’m back now fully fit.”

Despite their side missing five regular first-teamers, the Surrey supporters witnessed another one-sided encounter.

The visitors must have rued forfeiting the toss and not batting first at an excellent batting wicket that rewarded bowlers who were prepared to bang the

ball into the pitch.

It was 6ft 6in fast bowler Conor McKerr, with match figures of 7-47, who lead the way, but the country’s leading wicket taker – despite missing half the league programme – Morne Morkel was not far away with a fivewicket match haul.

The capture of Morkel has proved to the signing of the season, as Surrey look to wrap up the Championship in the season’s closing weeks.

Two victories from their final four games will see the Championship return back to The Oval.

At the time of going to press on Wednesday, Surrey were batting against Essex.

Our Dulwich Hamlet reporter speaks to the club’s official photographer about the motivation behind documenting an historic season with a photopgraphy exhibition in Peckham

THIS SUMMER, Duncan Palmer and fellow freelance photographer, Sam Mellish, created an exhibition called The Beautiful Game at the Brick Brewery in Peckham in celebration of Dulwich Hamlet’s success last season, when the club won promotion to National League South for the first time.

Dulwich Hamlet’s stadium problems have been well-documented in recent times. However, the impact on its supporters and the local community are given attention less often.

In the second half of last season, Dulwich were locked out of their Champion Hill ground by their landlords, Meadow Residential, in a dispute which involves Southwark Council. From their temporary home in Mitcham, Gavin Rose’s side won promotion to the sixth tier of English football for the first time in their history.

But the move eight miles south to Tooting & Mitcham Football Club has had knock-on effects, particularly for Dulwich businesses.

Official Hamlet photographer Palmer wanted to choose a home for the exhibition that symbolised what the club has lost by being uprooted.

He explained the decision to have it at the Brick Brewery. “It was significant because it was a place where Dulwich fans always went before and after games. They used to give discounts to anyone wearing a pink and blue shirt.”

The exhibition was conceived to keep people reminded of the Hamlet.

In doing so Duncan hopes to encourage fans to continue making the journey to Mitcham, to keep fighting to come home, and to help local businesses like the Brewery.

“The hassle of bringing kids on long journeys across multiple forms of

public transport means that supporters with young families are less likely to come,” he added “It used to be the case that everyone

made the short walk to the same pubs and restaurants after the game. Now, people need to hurry home owing to the extra distance and no longer have

a regular local meeting place. Things just aren’t the same at Imperial Fields.”

Long-term fan, Mishi Morath, echoes

those concerns. “Local pubs don't have the numbers they used to on home days, when all of the local boozers from the Cherry Tree, up to the East Dulwich Tavern and The Bishop on Lordship Lane - were packed to the rafters pre- and post-match with supporters bedecked in pink and blue.

“After heading to the aforementioned pubs, the Hamlet faithful then needed some decent food to soak up their beers. The Dulwich Hamlet Fish Bar at the bottom of Dog Kennel Hill must lament ‘the good old days' when there were queues out of the door after a game as fans eagerly awaited their Saturday evening supper of traditional fish and chips.”

Mishi also pointed out that the Champion Hill stadium attracted tourist football fans. “The Hamlet have a close friendship with Altona 93, who play in the fifth division in Germany, and were visited by Dulwich in July.

Whenever they visit London, their fans can be seen in the various watering holes of East Dulwich and beyond, as their supporters always ensure to stopoff at Champion Hill. The ground is as important to them as sights like Trafalgar Square and the London Eye. “Last season alone, even if we discount the Altona connection, fans from Finland, Holland, France, Scotland, Wales, Estonia and Belgium were spotted on the Champion Hill terraces, such is the fine reputation of Dulwich Hamlet Football Club”.

Even if tourist numbers connected to the club are relatively small, their potential loss is yet another small, damaging facet of the saga.

However, Dulwich supporters are not accepting their fate. Last year, the club’s case was heard in parliament, and the rally at Goose Green attracted national attention.

Duncan and Sam’s exhibition was recently extended until September 12 and is an excellent visit for anyone who wants to to re-live Hamlet’s glorious promotion season.

Dulwich Cricket finish bodes well for the future CRICKET

DULWICH FINISHED their season in Division 2 of the Travelbag Surrey Championship in fine style by beating second placed Malden Wanderers by 70 runs last weekend.

Dulwich chose to bat, and the Eds Stolle and Towner put memories of the debacle in the first match between the sides behind them as

they cruised past that meagre total of 42 in the twelfth over. The pair had added 51 in 13.4 overs when skipper Stolle was the first to go, having led the way with 35 off 49 balls. His dismissal sparked a collapse as five wickets fell in ten overs for 32 runs, three of them to off spinner Will Clapp who bowled his ten overs straight through for just 18 runs.

Jon Lodwick thus joined Arun Ayyavooraju with the score on 83-5 after 23.4 overs. They stayed together for 22 overs, during which they added 107 for the sixth wicket.

Ayyavooraju defended resolutely until Clapp had completed his spell, but then advanced to his maiden fifty for the first team before falling for 58, scored off 92 balls. Lodwick reached his own half century but was out two balls later. He faced 57 balls in making his best score of the season. The opening bowlers then wrapped up the tail as the last five wickets went down for just 15 runs.

The innings ended on the first ball of the 50th over as Dulwich were dismissed for 205.

Lodwick then removed both openers in his first six overs in a

spell of eight overs for 21 runs. He gave way to Salaar Waqar, who took a wicket with his first ball and another three balls later to make it 57-4. Two wickets for Patrick George made it 77-6 in the 24th over. Pete Young and Joe Lavender then added 44 in 10.3 overs for the seventh wicket until a direct hit by Kamran Munawar ran out Lavender, and Munawar followed up with the next wicket in his next over. Two wickets in three balls by Alex Gledhill finished off the innings as Malden were all out for 135 in the 40th over. The last four wickets had

gone down for just 14 runs, with Young the last man out for the top score of 34. The wickets were thus shared equally between the five bowlers. Four of them took two, while Munawar had one plus a run out.

Dulwich have thus won four out of their last five matches, and have risen four places in that time to finish sixth. Four players have made their maiden fifties for the first team in the last three matches, which promises well for the future.

Dulwich will be aiming to take this improved form into next season.

THE MOST damning comment after one of Millwall’s most damaging results in a long time were delivered by Graham Potter.

“In the second half I forgot we were down to ten men at times,” the Swansea boss said.

Taking in injury-time, Swansea played with a man down for 97 minutes at The Den last Saturday, after Courtney BakerRichardson had been sent off in the fifth minute for a late, studs-up challenge on James Meredith.

Millwall could not have asked for better conditions to win this game, because in the 35th minute Swansea lost their captain, Leroy Fer, to injury, and replaced him with a full-back, Kyle Naughton.

Millwall had two shots on target in 102 minutes, one of them Murray Wallace’s goal from a corner with just over an hour left.

The decisive substitution looked like it had been Jiri Skalak, who had come on for Aiden O’Brien three minutes earlier and immediately provided real thrust down the right and quality crossing.

He was involved before the goal, setting up Jed Wallace for a cross that was blocked. Shaun Williams took the corner, Jake Cooper headed it back across the six-yard line, and centre-back Wallace twisted to glance home his first Millwall goal.

After the two early blows for Swansea, this should have been the one that had them out for the count.

But Potter made what turned out to be the change that turned the game, bringing on Jefferson Montero who set up two goals, which turned a difficult week that appeared to be going to end positively into one that only threw up more questions.

Millwall boss Neil Harris wasn’t angry with his team’s performance afterwards, because again there was no lack of effort.

But Millwall were one-dimensional and predictable most of the time they

were in possession, hitting too many long balls on top of Swansea’s defence when there should have been more subtlety to draw the opponents out and stretch them.

Instead, the Swans mostly knew what was coming, and if they didn’t make the first contact they made sure they had enough numbers around where the ball was landing to head off any danger.

It meant that Lee Gregory could rarely find space, and Steve Morison was evidently a frustrated figure as he battled to win headers.

Morison had brilliantly headed down to Wallace in the first half to invite the winger through the Swansea defence.

Wallace had just goalkeeper Erwin Mulder to beat, but he shot with the ball bouncing and on the rise instead of perhaps giving himself a better chance by taking it further towards goal, and his effort went wide.

The way Rotherham and then Swansea have dealt with Millwall’s approach indicates that opponents are wising up to them. It was only when Skalak came on

that there was a different kind of threat.

Opposition sides either try to stop Millwall at their source – balls out from the back – or drop players deeper to crowd out the strikers.

The other issue is at the other end of the pitch and was mentioned by Harris later.

In six league games the Lions have conceded nineteen shots and let in eight goals.

There was a stir before the game when Jordan Archer’s name was missing from the team sheet. Archer had been told he wouldn’t start, and then there was obviously a disagreement because he wasn’t on the bench, instead watching some of the game from the back of the press box.

Ben Amos made his debut but couldn’t be blamed for either goal. Instead, Mahlon Romeo will be worried about potentially being dropped for the second time this season.

He let Montero turn him far too easily on Swansea’s left in the 76th minute before the winger ran inside to find Naughton, who evaded Williams’ lunge and shot low into the bottom left corner.

Worse was to come. Romeo was caught offside high up the pitch with five minutes left and Montero was away again. He played a one-two with Bersant Celina to take out Williams, then crossed to allow Oli McBurnie to tap in at the far post. It was far too open from Millwall.

Harris brought on Tom Bradshaw and then Tom Elliott as the home side finished in a 2-4-4 set-up.

In the sixth minute of injury-time, Skalak crossed from the right and Elliott headed towards goal, but the ball bounced down off the crossbar and straight into the arms of Mulder.

It would have papered over some cracks, but after losing George Saville to Middlesbrough last week and then the issue with Archer, the foundations have been rocked.

And Leeds United could shake them further or be the ideal opponent against which to relaunch the season on Saturday week.

STEVE MORISON understands why footballers are impatient to move when a tantalising offer comes along – even though he bided his time when he was in a similar situation in January 2011.

Morison finally saw his own Millwall club record surpassed last week, when Middlesbrough agreed to pay over £8million for George Saville to beat the £2.7million Norwich City splashed out on the striker in the summer of 2011.

Morison had had two offers the previous January: one from the Canaries and one from Nottingham Forest. He considered a move, but concluded that by the end of the season he could still be a Championship player.

It was wise to wait. That May, Forest finished sixth and then lost in the playoffs. Norwich were promoted in second and Morison could depart for Carrow Road knowing it was to play in the Premier League.

As is often the story in these cases, some Lions fans felt Saville jumped ship too soon, after Millwall took him from the fringes of the Wolves squad and developed him into one of the most impressive midfielders in the division.

But Morison makes a different argument.

“Anyone who says they wouldn’t do it they’re talking nonsense,” Morison says. “They’re doing it because they want to create controversy or they want to be horrible or abusive.

“There isn’t anybody in the world, let’s not beat around the bush, if they were offered double or whatever it is to do the exact same job that wouldn’t go do it.

“Even people at the top level where money doesn’t even matter anymore, if they get a call to do it for more money, not even at a club that’s as good as the one they’re at, they leave.

“It’s not always about money, but with success money comes.

“George might go there and get promoted with Middlesbrough, or he might not.

“My situation was a bit different because I was going straight to the Premier League. There was no, ‘we might get there’. That’s why I didn’t leave the previous January. I could have gone to Nottingham Forest or Norwich and I could have ended up just being in the Championship again.

That’s why I didn’t leave.

“But when it came to the end of the season it was a case that Norwich wanted me and that was different because I was guaranteed to go up and play Premier League.

“George is going to one of the favourites, huge potential and willing to pay the money. If someone's willing to pay that much for you – and look at

“You always get football fans saying their piece because they’re loyal and that’s the team they support. But, at the end of the day, it’s our job. From the age of 33 upwards, your job can be over, you’re done. Some of us hang in there a bit longer but the majority of the time it’s over.

“So it’s not a case of, ‘I’ll wait, I’ll wait, I’ll wait’, because one thing you don’t have on your side is time.”

Middlesbrough’s pursuit of Saville – and earlier in August of Jed Wallace – was no secret.

Neither were Glasgow Rangers’ bids for Jake Cooper, and there were other Lions players in demand after such an impressive 2017-18 campaign when they went within two games of finishing in the play-offs.

Morison revealed players do talk about reports and rumours

surrounding their team-mates, and they are not shielded from the damaging speculation outside the dressing room.

“Of course it’s discussed,” he continues. “It’s discussed in serious conversations if someone asks you for some advice. But it’s spoken about in jokey conversations as well when it’s used as banter and to wind people up.

“We’re not stupid. Lads have social media accounts, so they’re going to read things. It was well-documented by both teams as well who they were after.

“Of course we talk about it and that’s why the dressing room becomes a tough place to be sometimes. You have a laugh and joke about it but there can be a serious undertone to it as well.

“If someone comes into whatever job you do to watch you and is offering you the world then it’s tough for you not to be taken over by that a little bit.

“With us it was a difficult situation because it wasn’t one player, it wasn’t two players, it wasn’t three players, it was four, five, six players that were all

getting interest. And these are players that start every week. So it’s tough.

“As I think you know, it becomes tough not from within but from outside pressures because if you have a bad game everyone thinks you don’t want to be here. It can be constant abuse on social media, etc., etc.

“The generation we live in – not that I have to worry about it, people can say whatever they want about me: I don’t read it, don’t want to look at it, not interested; unless someone tells me about it I don’t know about it – with a lot of these lads, for them not to pick the phone up and read about it and be affected by it is difficult, because that’s the world they’ve grown up in. That’s what they’ve been used to.

“I was speaking to the gaffer the other day and we were saying we’ll crack on, we’ll get to January – and then it’ll all start again.”

Millwall have lost three league games in a row for the first time since October 2016 and are sixteenth in the Championship with six points from

five games.

That’s the same as at the same stage last season, and Morison certainly isn’t about to panic.

“I think you could go and get the interview with me from this time last year,” Morison joked. “It puts a negative spin on it, the results of the last three games.

“We’re disappointed with the last three games, it’s not what we wanted.

And especially the last game, the fact that we were leading, we were at home and it was against ten men.

“But it’s a tough league. We’ve had a couple of poor performances, we’ve had a couple of decent performances and it’s still early days.

“There’s a long way to go and lots of work to be done. Everyone needs to stop panicking and stop saying we need to pull up trees, do this, do that.

We just need to get ourselves together.

The transfer window is shut and we’ve got what we’ve got now.

“We’ll move forward and work as hard as we can to get a positive result against Leeds.”

MILLWALL’S FORM hasn’t cheered their fans of late but it’s unlikely that when the Leeds United bus pulls into The Den on Saturday week that there will be any bricks lobbed through windows.

Lions supporters haven’t exactly rolled out the welcome mats for John Terry and Frank Lampard in the last few months, and Ian Hollaway was also reminded of the feeling towards him around these parts and he responded with a sarcastic doff of his cap before he stepped off the QPR bus in December.

One of the reasons Jem Karacan is back at Millwall is because he feels at home. He may only have played seven games for the club during his first spell over ten years ago, but he’s a local lad and some of his family are Lions fans.

The move happened quickly this time around. Karacan heard about Millwall’s interest on a Tuesday and had signed two days later.

He is a former team-mate of Neil Harris’, and that was also another decisive factor before he signed a contract until January.

“I had offers from all over the world, I spoke to clubs in Australia and Turkey,” Karacan, who is of Turkish descent, explained. “But the last few years I’ve moved a lot abroad and back over here, so location for me was massive. I’m from around here, I know the area well so the settling-in period wasn’t tough. I knew a couple of the boys and the manager, which was massive for me.

“I got a call from my agent who had spoken to the club, and that was it, really. I said to him, ‘jump on it and get it done’. All the other stuff is just details.

“It’s a club I was at years ago and there are still people here I know from back then. It just made sense.

Obviously I wasn’t here for that long, but being back down here near where I grew up, it’s very homely and that was massive for me to feel welcome and wanted.”

“Having a manager that knows me, what I’ve done and what I can do, was huge. A couple of managers that I had spoken to, the feeling wasn’t right. I’ve experienced enough to know what I want and how I can do well for a club. As soon as I spoke to the gaffer here I knew this was where I wanted to be.

“It’s only until January. It works well for both of us, I can come in and show what I can do and the gaffer will see what I can offer and go from there.”

Karacan had spells with Galatasaray and Bursaspor in Turkey after playing a key role for Reading when they won the Championship in 2011-12.

Karacan, 29, could make his league debut against Leeds.

“I remember playing for Millwall against Leeds at home and that was a very tense environment,” he continued. “I was only eighteen then and that set me up pretty well for

moving to Turkey and seeing how extreme the atmospheres and the fans can be.

“I used to laugh because I’d already experienced it at Millwall, and when the away teams came in they used to get a bit of grief.

“It was an experience out there and one that I won’t forget quickly. My first game was pretty much the equivalent of the Charity Shield but they see it as a much bigger thing there. They’ve got the league, the Turkish Cup and then the Super Cup. “When we were heading into the stadium a brick came through the window. When I got on the bus I saw security men and I thought, ‘what are they for?’ I found out quickly. The glass smashes and I turn around and

all the other lads are sitting there as if nothing happened. That was normal.

“That was my first experience of seeing what it was like. It happened a few times travelling away.

Galatasaray bring such a massive support with them, when you go to the airport or anywhere it is crazy.

The players are looked at as celebrities and they’re just swarmed.

“I had opportunities to go back but it didn’t go as well as I would have liked it when I was there. Speaking to my wife and family, it’s very easy to forget how you felt in the moment when you were there. You consider it, but then you think about it deeply and what happened. Little things like the standard not being what it is in England. I was quick to forget things

like that, but I got reminded pretty quickly by my friends and family.

“It was interesting but I’m delighted to still be in England and the Championship. You see how the big clubs have come down from the Premier League and struggled. No one expects it. It’s a tough league and I’m looking forward to getting my teeth stuck into it again.

“When I came here all those years ago as a young lad on loan, you kind of keep your head down. You get your work done and get out of the building quietly. It was only for six weeks or so. There was a good little group of us: Ali Fuseini, Jay Simpson.

“Time flies. I was speaking to the gaffer saying, ‘I played with you ten

years ago’. It’s crazy to think how quickly it has gone.

“I trained with the gaffer a lot and learned a lot from him. He’s got that desire to win in every session on the training pitch. I learned a lot from a pro who had done so much in his career and still wanted it every day and still wanted to be a winner.

“He’s taken that into management.

Being around the squad reminds me of what he was like back in training.

It’s my first experience playing under someone I played with. I’m enjoying it.

“He’s a club legend. I’m not surprised to see how well he’s done.

The manager gets what he expects from the players. It’s a good bunch of lads and a strong unit.”

FRED ONYEDINMA’S longterm future is at Millwall, Lions boss Neil Harris has reiterated.

Onyedinma joined Wycombe Wanderers last Friday on loan until January and made his debut the next day as a 70th-minute substitute in a 1-1 draw at home to Luton Town in League One. Onyedinma is in his second spell with the Chairboys after scoring eight goals in 27 games with the then-League Two side in 2014-15.

There are currently four senior Millwall players out on loan, with Ben Thompson at Portsmouth, Tom King with AFC Wimbledon and Sid Nelson at League Two Swindon Town.

Onyedinma, 21, hasn’t been a regular in the side since early 2017, when his performances in Millwall’s FA Cup run brought him to the attention of Premier League sides.

He hadn’t played in the league for Millwall this season.

“Fred, Ben, Sid, Kingy, they are the young players coming through at Millwall,” Harris said.

“Fred has been an important part of the squad for three years, but he has never had a sustained spell in the side, apart from maybe around January, February time last year.

“He has never been the main man.

He was frustrated and wanted to get out and play regular first-team football, which we’re hoping he will get at Wycombe.

“Fred needs game time and competitive minutes to continue his development.

“We forget how young these players are. Being out playing regular league football will only benefit them.”

STEVE MORISON has stressed the time for excuses is over after the closure of the transfer window, as the Lions prepare for a huge clash with Leeds United at The Den on Saturday week.

Morison admitted “it wasn’t ideal preparation” after a number of Millwall players were linked with moves away from the club during August.

Lions boss Neil Harris revealed there was an unsettling effect on the dressing room, before on the last day of the window George Saville was sold to Middlesbrough and Ryan Leonard signed from Sheffield United.

The deals were record fees received and paid for the club. Millwall will make a profit of around £8million on Saville when that move automatically becomes permanent on January 1. Millwall will also pay a seven-figure sum for Leonard, exceeding the outlay on Tom Bradshaw when they broke their almost-29-year-old transfer record for the first time in August.

Through that uncertainty over what the final make-up of their squad would be on August 31, Millwall lost three successive league games.

“It’s been tough,” Morison conceded.

“Teams can decide what they want to do and unfortunately you’re powerless to

stop it. It’s been a case of trying to manage that and if it is going to be a case of losing players then it’s about the club looking after themselves and getting the best possible deal that they can.

“That’s what happened in the end. The gaffer got his man Leonard who he’s wanted for a while. We’ve lost Sav which is disappointing for us and the dressing room. At the same time everyone realises that’s what happens in football.

“We have to regroup and go again.

There’s not a lot we can do. It hasn’t been ideal preparation leading up to games and with the results people look for excuses. The transfer window is shut now so that’s another excuse out the window.

“It’s a case now we have to perform.

We have no excuses not to. Obviously it’s going to take time for the new lads we’ve brought in to find their feet and learn how we play.

“We are very team-oriented. For us to do well and for the new lads to do well we have to do it as a team. We’ve shown at the back end of last season that if you do things as a team then individuals shine within that team.

“Has there ever been a period in Millwall’s history when so many players have been linked with moves away after one season? It’s testament to the staff and to the lads.

“We now just get our heads down and work hard.”
