Officers attacked, have to taser suspect, then confronted later by pair on moped with firearm

TWO POLICE officers were attacked by burglars and later threatened with a pointed gun after foiling a late-night phone shop burglary in Peckham.

The officers were on patrol when they chanced upon a burglary taking place at a phone shop on Rye Lane, at around 1.20am on Wednesday morning. The two officers intervened and attempted to detain the two suspects inside the shop and a third waiting outside on a moped.

One suspect, aged 24, was detained, but the other two got on the moped and began to circle the officers.

They made threats and started punching and kicking the officers – who called in for urgent assistance - before driving off as their accomplice attempted to run away.

As the moped made a getaway, the officers chased the suspect on foot. Minutes later he was tasered and bundled into a police van as back-up arrived.

Before the suspect was taken into custody, officers in the van stopped at an address in Croydon to carry out a search. While on

their way back to the station, two males on a moped pulled up alongside the van and pointed a firearm at officers – though it is still unconfirmed whether these were the same two burglars from Rye Lane.

Police drove away from the scene and say they are urgently investigating to identity the suspects involved in the incident. No shots were fired and no officers were seriously injured.

Simon Messinger, Central South Area Commander, said: "Fortunately the officers only received minor injuries and, thanks to the rapid support of colleagues, one of the suspects was detained. However, two suspects remain outstanding, and these are clearly reckless and dangerous individuals.”

GCSEs give a true picture of today’s young people

T

here’s another story bubbling under the many headlines about youth violence spiralling out of control, and it puts into context what our young people are really achieving Southwark’s youth are trying hard at school and being rewarded with good grades.

This year’s GCSE results show the amount achieving a ‘good’pass has increased on 2017 by 0.8 per cent to 69.2 per cent.

Provisional results show that around half of pupils got a strong pass in English and maths.

While the new grading system, with those earning the top marks achieving a 9 and a grade 4 roughly equivalent to a C, may be confusing to many of us, think of the headache for the teachers who had to get their students up to the required levels - but they did it.

Some schools, looking at provisional results, achieved outstanding results. James Allen’s Girls’School (JAGs) in Dulwich always does well, and this year 92 per cent of pupils achieved an A* or A. Sacred Heart in Camberwell came 20th in the entire country for school performance last year and has achieved even better results this year.

And Kingsdale in Dulwich is continuing to soar with some exceptional students. We report this week on one who was awarded ten grade 9s, one A**, two A*s and a grade 8 - and this last grade is to be remarked! Teachers hope these results will set a national record, which would mean the school has produced the top performing GCSE student for five years in a row.

Bola gets the show on the road

Play in a car by Peckham-born writer runs in the West End

A PECKHAM-BORN playwright is taking a play that takes place in a car to the West End.

The 20-minute play Papa Don't Preach, written by Bola Agbaje, is set in a car parked on Drury Lane in Covent Garden. The play focuses on a conversation between 24-year-old Laura, played by Lekhani Chirwa, and her dad David, played by Tony

Timberland, about her leaving the family home while waiting for an estate agent to arrive to view a flat.

The play takes place in a car, with the characters sat in the front and a maximum of six audience members sat in the back.

Agbaje said: “I'm extremely excited to present this unlikely new fourwheeled addition to London's celebrated West End theatre scene.

While it may sound like a particularly strange concept, the story of 'Papa Don't Preach’ sets out to champion the kind of heart-warming, funny and important conversations that take place between loved ones inside cars all over the country each day - and what better way of doing this than sitting the audience right in the middle of their real-life setting, in possibly the smallest theatre in the world."

commissioned Bola to write the play after its research with 1,000 parents revealed that cars play a central role in important family conversations. 45 per cent of people that took part in the survey viewed the car as the one of the most important places when it comes to getting the family talking. 51 per

cent of parents believe that candid car conversations are particularly beneficial to their family’s mental health and wellbeing.

The play will run from 23 to 25 September at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, Catherine Street, WC2B 5JF.

On Sunday, two services take place: one in English at 10am, followed by a twin service in Spanish at 12.30pm. Both services are hosted by the same man: Reverend Hugo Adan Fernandez.

The reverend, who is originally from Madrid, Spain, was licensed as Vicar of Southwark, Holy Trinity with Saint Matthew’s at the Elephant Church in early July. He hosts two services to incorporate both the British and Hispanic approach to religion.

“We are officially a bilingual parish. It’s not only about the language of the services: we have two different communities, in Spanish and in English, which have different ways of understanding space, roles and religion. We decided to work together,” Fernandez told the News.

“We are trying to acknowledge both ways of being a church. British religion is more private, it’s more between you and God. The Hispanic way is more about community and relationships,” he said.

Reverend Fernandez moved to the United Kingdom five years ago while he was finishing his PhD at the University of Cambridge. His CV includes missionary work in Tanzania and Morocco.

“We are a Church of England parish, so we are part of a national church but we acknowledge a culture that is not English and is equally valued and protected by the Church of England. This is why it’s unique,” he said.

Bishop of Southwark Christopher Chessun said: “I am delighted that the licensing of Hugo to St Matthew’s will give a new and permanent home to the Diocese’s Hispanic Mission. This is another way in which the Diocese of Southwark is fulfilling its Vision of ‘Walking, Welcoming, Growing’ and I look forward to seeing the parish grow as it becomes a home for the Spanish speaking Anglican community, both at the Elephant and Castle and beyond.”

Firefighters tackle restaurant blaze

DULWICH: Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a restaurant with flats above on Lordship Lane last Tuesday.

They was called to the restaurant at 4.50pm on Tuesday, August 21 to the East Dulwich restaurant.

Crews from Peckham, New Cross, Forest Hill, and Brixton fire stations had the blaze under control by just after 6pm, but damage has left the restaurant closed until further notice as the kitchen has been destroyed.

According to the Brigade, the fire was discovered when the owner smelt burning and discovered a fire in the kitchen. The fire is believed to have been caused by vegetable oil being heated and left unattended.

The oil ignited and the fire spread into the extraction system which contained “large amounts of grease deposits.”

Fortunately staff had left the building as the fire spread.

Travellers’ talk DULWICH: Author Damian Le

Bas will be talking about his oneyear trip to traveller sites around the UK and France on 6 September, writes Jessica Aszkenasy...

The author and poet will give a reading of his book The Stopping Places: A Journey Through Gypsy Britain at Dulwich Books on Croxted Road.

During his time on the road, he spent a week on a site in Gipsy Hill, which takes its name from the presence of travellers that are thought to have established themselves where Oaks Avenue and Woodland Road now stand by the 17th century.

AN INTREPID 83-year old jumped out of a plane from 13,000 feet on Saturday in what she described as “the experience of a lifetime” to raise money for elderly Irish pensioners.

Nora Higgins, who has lived in Peckham since 1984 and is originally from County Galway, skydived with her friend Ailbhe Mullen to help raise money for the Irish Pensioners’ Project in Southwark.

The charity supports more than 300 elderly Irish people in our borough, many of whom are isolated and living in poverty.

The former Cherry Garden School secretary told the News before the big day: “Our aim is to help our members have comfortable last years of life and for them to be able to stay in their own homes.Every penny is going to the charity.”

The skydive saw the pair jump together at 13,000 feet and hurtle towards the ground at speeds up to 120 miles per hour at Netheravon Airfield near Salisbury on Saturday, August 25.

Nora had planned to jump solo but after meeting Ailbhe at the Irish Embassy in London and after hearing a skydive was on Ailbhe’s ‘bucket list’, they decided to join forces and fundraise together, with Nora saying her age was not going to stop her: “It’s now or never”.

After safely coming back down to earth, Nora said: “I have to say that the Skydive was the experience of a lifetime.

“I really enjoyed it and with perfect weather conditions our descent was amazing.

83-YR-OLD HAS A £20K TARGET

“My instructor allowed me to control the parachute for a time, turning to take in views which included the Isle of Wight. Having Ailbhe do it with me really made my day - of course they all thought I was her mother come to watch her.

“I think I may be the oldest to do it at Netheravon.

“Having done the Skydive I would say there is nothing more to do!”

The friends, whose entire jump was filmed, have now raised nearly £6,000 towards their £20,000 target.

DODGY PARKING High speed chase

OFFICERS ON patrol in Southwark were surprised to find a car stuck at a very awkward angle on Saturday morning.

The vehicle was half raised off the ground, seemingly having driven over a movable bollard.

With the owner nowhere to be found, the Met arranged for it to be

lifted and towed off.

The unfortunate parking error was once of several traffic incidents during the bank holiday weekend.

On Sunday a car crashed into another car and two road signs in a 20 mile an hour zone, missing two pedestrians.

Officers said two males were arrested and are in custody – and appealed for drivers to be careful during the weekend’s downpours.

A MAN was taken to hospital after being hit by a moped during a high speed police chase on Monday night.

Officers say they were following two mopeds in a high speed pursuit down Kennington Park Road just after 11pm on Monday, August 27, when one moped hit a member of

the public and fled the scene.

The road was completely closed off as paramedics arrived and took the twenty-five-year-old man to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

A police spokesperson said there have been no arrests in connection with the incident and the Met’s directorate of professional standards has been informed ‘as a matter of course’.

Water fountains back on our streets

THE LOCATION of new public water fountains to help combat plastic pollution have been announced by Sadiq Khan this week.

Twenty new fountains are being installed across London, with Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital and Camberwell Green both in line for one each.

The news comes after an environmental study by Royal Holloway, University of London, showed that 75 per cent of flounder, a type of fish, were found with plastic fibres inside their digestive system.

A report on the state of the Thames, Thames 21, has also shown that plastic water bottles make up around ten per cent of all litter found in the river.

Lambeth and Southwark Assembly Member, Florence Eshalomi AM, said: “This is a great initiative that will benefit the whole community and help those without a clean or reliable supply of water, as well as people on the go.

“Providing local people with the means to refill for free will also lead to less plastic waste, which we know has an adverse impact on the environment.”

Donate your unwanted goods

A NEW British Heart Foundation charity shop has opened in Peckham and is appealing for donations and volunteers.

Councillor Charlie Smith joined volunteers and staff from the 10 Rye Lane shop on Friday, August 24, to celebrate the opening with traditional ribbon cutting and cake.

The shop sells clothes, shoes, accessories, toys, books, music and films and is looking for donations – with can be arranged via a free collections service.

British Heart Foundation area manager, Ronald Berenger, said: ““Each item sold in the store will help the BHF fund lifesaving heart research, so if you have not yet visited then please do come by to see what great bargains are on offer.

“We still urgently need more donations so if you are having a clear out in the next few weeks, we would love to receive any unwanted clothing and accessories.

“Donating couldn’t be easier with our free collections service and it’s a great way to cut down on waste.

“If you would rather give the gift of time, we are always in need of volunteers who can spare a couple of hours a week, so please get in touch if you are interested.”

Proceeds from the charity’s 750 nationwide shops help to fund research into heart disease and treatments.

Local swimmers raise thousnads

SOUTHWARK SWIMMERS have raised over £6,000 for charity by taking part in what they claim to be the world's biggest fundraising swim.

Twenty-five swimmers at The Castle Leisure Centre in Elephant and Castle, Camberwell Leisure Centre, Dulwich Leisure Centre and Seven Islands Leisure Centre in Rotherhithe raised £6,244 in total.

The money will go to charities Cancer Research and Marie Curie.

According to the charities, over the past 31 years more than 700,000 people have taken to the pool and swum 400m, 1.5k, 2.5k or 5k distances, individually or as part of a team, raising a total of over 49 million.

A FAMILY in Peckham say they haven’t been able to use their garden for three years after dodgy drainage left them with a ‘cesspit’ in their back yard.

MAJOR IMPROVEMENT works on a Bermondsey estate have ground to a halt, with residents saying they have been left in limbo as yet another survey is conducted.

The council has postponed major external, internal and cladding works to the Tustin Estate in South Bermondsey after saying another survey on the buildings is required – it is the fourth survey since June 2017. It says a number of reviews is necessary in order to secure best value for money.

But the estate's Tenants’ and Residents’ Association Chairman, Andrew Eke, who has lived on the estate for 31 years, says that the council has left the residents in the dark regarding when improvements will be made to their homes. He says that he was not informed directly by the council that the works would be put on hold.

"All we're getting is hearsay and second hand information," said Eke. "The contractors are cleaning up their materials as we speak. We were happy to suffer the inconveniences of the buildings works because we believed it was going to lead to other works being done.

"People are putting off having repairs done to their homes because they are being told that major works will be taking place."

"We've lived here for 40 years and it's gone downhill so much," said 71-yearold resident Ray Osbourn.

A council spokesman said: “It is

absolutely not the case that the refurbishment works on the Tustin Estate have been cancelled. The work to demolish the tower block’s podium is now completed and the contractors are just working to leave the site safe and secure.

“With regards to the internal and external refurbishment of the blocks we are very conscious of making sure the council is getting good value for money, especially given the high costs of the works. To this end we have commissioned a number of reviews so we can be thoroughly informed about the level of work required so we can be sure

that the chosen solutions are what is needed to improve the appearance and quality of living in the blocks.

“We will be sharing the results of these reviews and discussing the final decision with residents in due course, and when we are sure we have the best solution for the best value, those works will be going ahead.”

“We recognise that more could have been done to communicate our decision with residents. Letters will be going out this week to update everyone on the works and explain what is happening next, and we have also arranged to meet with the TRA.”

Sixty-three-year-old Colin Gage lives on the Lindley Estate on Peckham’s Commercial Way with his partner Jodie Pearce, 33, and young daughter Samantha.

But he says that since moving into the flat from their previous home on Bird in Bush Road they have been plagued by bad smells and swarming flies due to overflowing sewage in their garden.

“We can’t use the garden as it smells so bad, there are flies over raw sewage and we have seen rats – we think the holes in the garden are rat holes, nine inches deep.

“I’m paying 137 pound a week rent and I’m partly disabled – but after three-anda-half years I’m still waiting for the sewer pipe to be fixed,” the COPD and deep vein thrombosis sufferer told the News.

The council said it had received three reports of drain problems from the Sidmouth House property between 2016 and 2018, and that it hoped the problem would soon be resolved once and for all.

But it denied the smell was caused by raw sewage, saying it is just leaking rainwater.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing, said: “Our repairs team have been called out to fix blocked pipes at this address in the past, including most recently on 15 August.

“During this visit the contractor noted a drain run was broken and the council was just waiting for costs on this repair, which will be completed this week.

“Officers have visited the property to check the drain is still running as freely as

possible in the meantime and spoken with Mr Gage.

“The drain is not a sewage pipe, it services the rainwater pipe, so whilst there may be some flooding when it rains, and possible a smell from the stagnant water, it is not a problem with sewage or waste.

“If there is any other damage from the flooding we can look at that once the problem is fixed.

“I apologise that the problem hasn’t been dealt with properly in the past but we hope this will correct the issue so it doesn’t happen in the future.”

37 years for robbers who snatched more than £100k EAST DULWICH

THREE MEN “not afraid to mete out violence” who stole more than £100k in five months of robbing post offices and currency exchange shops – including cash transported through East Dulwich - have been jailed for a total of 37 years.

The robbery on Lordship Lane in East Dulwich took place on January 4 this year, when a vehicle taking cash to be banked was targeted.

Cleon Perry, aged 41, from Kent Close in Mitcham, Edmund Brown, 33, from Coates Close in Thornton Heath and Matthew Frazer, 42, from Mersham Road, Thornton Heath, were all sentenced at Croydon Crown Court on Friday, August 24.

Perry had pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted robbery and five counts of robbery and was given fifteen years in jail.

Brown had pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted robbery and five counts of robbery and was handed thirteen years and four months behind bars.

Frazer had pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery and one count of attempted robbery, and was sentenced to eight years and eight months’ imprisonment.

Perry and Brown were arrested by firearms officers on Saturday, February 17, after robbing a currency exchange bureau on Croydon’s London Road.

Brown was found in possession of a crowbar while being searched by police and Perry had a ‘large quantity’ of coins and notes.

Frazer was arrested on Wednesday, April 4, on suspicion of conspiring to rob with Perry and Brown, between February 5 and 17, 2018 for a robbery and attempted robbery at two currency exchanges.

DNA, automatic number plate recognition, and phone evidence linked the men to six other offences in post offices and currency exchange bureaux across Croydon, Westminster, South Kensington, West Norwood and Southwark between October 2017 and February 2018.

then forced staff to open cash and deposit boxes – with violence.

Footage from a robbery in West Norwood in February shows Perry diving through the parcel hatch, followed by Brown, and then assaulting a staff member before stealing cash.

The previous month, Perry and Brown robbed a currency exchange on Vauxhall Bridge Road where Perry hit a staff member over the head with a crowbar after the employee tried to resist, while Brown stole the cash.

The judge stated that the victim of this offence was to be commended for his

bravery, and the CCTV footage of the incident was “shocking viewing”.

When handing down the sentences, the judge said the robberies involved ‘significant pre-planning, and that the defendants were “not afraid to mete out violence”, and that she believed there was “overwhelming likelihood of the defendants committing further robberies even after a significant period in prison”, adding Brown “showed no remorse”.

Detective Constable David Reed, from the Met’s flying squad, said: “Such was the weight of evidence gathered against these three men, that they had no option but to plead guilty.

“These offences involved high levels of violence and have been extremely traumatic for the victims involved.

“I would like to thank all the businesses who have assisted us in our investigation; the support of the staff has helped us secure a conviction against the group.

“These convictions highlight the professionalism, tenacity and unique qualities demonstrated by the Metropolitan Police Flying Squad.

“This was a complex and protracted investigation which has resulted in the removal of three dangerous criminals from the streets of London for some considerable time.”

A BROAD daylight stabbing on Tooley Street hospitalised a teenager last Friday afternoon..

Police say they were called at 3.25pm to reports of a man armed with a knife on Tooley Street, near London Bridge.

They found a man, believed to be in his mid-to-late teens, who had been stabbed.

Paramedics took him to hospital in east London and the Met is currently waiting for an update on his condition.

One resident told the News St John’s Churchyard, just off Tooley Street, was still cordoned off at 5pm.

Park weapons sweep TWO KNIVES were found in bushes during a weapons sweep in Burgess Park over the bank holiday weekend, writes Katherine Johnston...

Met officers were joined by residents and community workers on Saturday, August 25 as they searched for hidden caches of weapons.

The park is used by gang members and people who carry knives as a place to hide their weapons – decreasing their chances of being caught and arrested for carrying knives.

They uncovered two kitchen knives hidden in the undergrowth during the search.

The find came just a day after local police officers held at meet and greet at the park, where officers gave out crime prevention advice.

The 37-year-old from Grosvenor Terrace was told at the Inner London Crown Court last Friday, August 24, he will have to serve a minimum of 25 years for the murder of Michael Boyle.

Boyle, who was from Galashiels in Scotland, was found with a stab wound on Sunday February 25 this year after police were called to the Sir Robert Peel pub in Langdale Close, Walworth.

The 44-year-old victim was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service, where he died on Saturday, 10 March.

A post-mortem examination was held on Thursday, 15 March and gave the cause of death as multiple organ failure and a stab wound to the chest.

Downs was charged the day after the stabbing with attempted murder, possession of an offensive weapon and common assault.

He was later remanded in custody at the Old Bailey on Monday, 26 March, where the indictment was changed to murder.

He pleaded guilty to the offences of murder and possession of an offensive weapon on Monday, 30 July.

A PECKHAM casino has provided a sixteen-year-old quadriplegic boy with a new wheelchair.

The News has received multiple reports that a truck hit a woman cycling an Ofo dockless bicycle on Peckham High Street.

Mary Edouard, from Queen's Road, Peckham, told the News she saw the woman lying on the ground outside the Citizens Advice Bureau at around 4.20pm: "I was walking past the bus station going towards the Citizens Advice Bureau when I saw a whole load of police cars.

"I stopped and heard somebody screaming, she seemed to be a middle aged woman lying on the floor and a truck was just past her, though I don't know whether it was that vehicle that hit her.

"It almost looked as if she had fallen off the curb.

"She was alive, but definitely injured.

PECKHAM AND Nunhead Free Film Festival next month will honour Charlie Chaplin’s local legacy, with a special screening introduced by his son.

The ninth Free Film Festival in this area will hold cinema viewings and Q&A’s, among other events, at various locations around Peckham from August 31 to September 16.

The festival will screen a selection of classics and new indie movies, with the opening night showing PinCushion, an indie debut by British director Deborah Haywood at the Peckham Plex Cinema.

This year also marks 250 years since circuses began in the UK, and there will be some themed movie showings to celebrate.

Carnival of Souls, a cult horror set in a circus, will be shown at the The Ivy House on September 11.

The closing event will be at the Zippos Circus in Peckham to honour

one of Southwark’s most famous figures, Charlie Chaplin.

A special screening of his most successful movies, The Circus, will be introduced by the famous comic’s son, Eugene Chaplin.

Celia Hammond, the Events Manager for the festival, said: “We are very excited to be working with Zippos, Circus250 and Eugene Chaplin, who will introduce the film on the closing night of the festival.

“We have extended the festival dates to coordinate Charlie’s film The Circus, which is turning 90 this year, in Zippos Circus with Charlie Chaplin’s son in attendance.

“2018 sees a celebration of 250 years of circus across the UK, so this is the perfect time to screen it.”

Charlie Chaplin is one of the most iconic figures in cinema and was born in Walworth Road in 1889, before gaining international recognition for his comical personas in silent film.

THE OWNER of an East Street shop in Walworth has been given 20 months in prison and ordered to pay a £1,500 company fine and costs of £5,000 after he pleaded guilty to supplying illegal skin lightening products.

Southwark Council says this is believed to be the first case where someone has received a custodial sentence for selling the dangerous items.

Mohammed Iqbal Bharadawala, aged 45, from Heigham Road, East Ham, appeared at London's Inner Crown Court yesterday, August 21.

This is the second time the director of Jenny's Cosmetics Limited, based at 72 East Street in Walworth, has been prosecuted by Southwark Council.

In November 2015 he was given a twelve month suspended sentence for similar offences the previous year.

The repeat offender had also been stopped by UK border force agents on March 31, 2017, on his way back from France with 1,431 'infringing cosmetics' subsequently seized by Kent trading standards officers.

Bharadawala and the company pleaded guilty to nine offences relating to the supply of illegal skin lightening products containing banned ingredient hydroquinone, which can cause serious and irreversible skin damage and is linked to liver and nervous system problems, and a further fifteen offences relating to inadequate cosmetic labelling.

Councillor Evelyn Akoto, Southwark Council cabinet member for community safety and public health, said:

“Southwark Council works tirelessly to protect shoppers in Southwark and beyond from irresponsible traders seeking to profit at the expense of their customers' health.

“These results show that businesses cannot hide by selling illegal goods online and that the courts will severely punish those who repeatedly break the law.

“I fully support the Judge’s decision to bestow the severest sentence in such a case, and hope that it acts as a serious deterrent to anyone thinking of dealing in dangerous skin lightening products here

in future.”

The council started inspecting the East Street premises on January 12 last year after a test purchase of three illegal items being sold on Ebay - leading to 260 items being seized.

It says one product purchased online, Grace Duo, contained seventeen per cent hydroquinone and had no manufacturer's details or English language labelling.

Further investigations showed that the Ebay transaction was with a company called Jenny's Online Limited, run by Bharodawala's brother, Abdul Kadar Bharodawala, aged 35, from Haldane Road in E6.

Abdul Bharodawala and his company also pleaded guilty to three offences each, under cosmetic product safety regulations.

He was also in court yesterday, and received a one year community order, 80 hours' unpaid work, costs of £4,500 and a fine of £500 against the company.

Mohammad Bharodawala was also disqualified from acting as a company Director for four years.

SOUTHWARK RESIDENTS have under two weeks left to have their say on a project implementing trial width restrictions on roads in Kennington.

According to traffic counts conducted by the council, lorries and large vehicles use smaller roads adjacent to Kennington Park Road to avoid using the major road, building up congestion.

The proposal involves installing islands that narrow the roads to six foot six inches to prevent traffic building up in the area. The islands would be installed on Kennington Park Place, Penton Place and Braganza Street.

The council has launched an online to survey to see whether residents support the proposal.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport Management and Air Quality, said: “It has become clear that we need to do something to improve road safety and reduce traffic in the Newington area, but we want to make sure that our proposed solution works for everyone. I would encourage local people to respond to our consultation and tell us what they think of the plans.”

Fifty-year-old delivery driver Graham Wright, who delivers office furniture to local businesses in the area, said: “For vans delivering furniture people’s homes it would be a problem, they’re the ones who would be stopped. Also, how would fire engines get through?”

Resident Joanna Gregorio, 70, who has lived on Kennington Park Road for 42 years said that less traffic would make

crossing the roads easier.

“I find it difficult seeing around the vans to cross the roads. I think the restrictions would be helpful,” she told

POLICE HAVE now made eight arrests as they continue to appeal for footage of the multiple stabbing in Camberwell, which has left one victim with injuries 'expected to be lifechanging'.

A fourteen-year-old boy was arrested last Thursday, August 16, on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and violent disorder.

He was charged with possession of a bladed article and possession of cannabis and has now been released on bail to appear at Camberwell Youth Court on Wednesday, September 5.

Another fourteen-year-old and five fifteen-year-olds, all male, were also arrested on Thursday on suspicion of violent disorder and released on bail until mid-September.

On Friday, a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. He has also been released on bail until mid-September pending further enquiries.

Police were called to Landor House at 17.24 on Thursday, August 16, and found four teenage boys suffering from stab wounds.

One of them, aged fifteen, is still in hospital in a 'serious but stable' condition and is believed to have sustained 'lifechanging' injuries.

A second fifteen-year-old victim is also still in hospital, and is stable.

The other two victims were not seriously injured and have been discharged.

Southwark Police's Detective Inspector Dean Purvis said: "This remains an active and fast paced investigation and although eight arrests have been made, I remain

‘Habitual knife carrier’ jailed for 14 months

A NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD 'habitual knife carrier' from Camberwell's Elmington Estate, who owned a hunting knife and machete, has been jailed for fourteen months.

Kevin Amon Aka-Kadjo (b. 30.03.99) was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, August 22, for numerous driving offences and possessing two bladed weapons.

He will serve fourteen months in prison for dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, possession of a hunting knife, possession of a machete and handling stolen goods.

Aka-Kadjo was also given a criminal behaviour order to stop him from going to specific areas indefinitely.

Police say on Friday, March 2 at 3.45am a black Peugot was seen driving at speed on Clapham Road.

After failing to stop, police started a pursuit down Acre Lane to Porden Road, SW2, where Aka-Kadjo ran from the vehicle and threw the car keys over a wall into a building site.

After Aka-Kadjo was detained, officers searched the car and found a 'large hunting knife' in the foot well of the driver's side.

Aka-Kadjo was charged on Friday, March 2, with possession of a bladed article, dangerous driving, failure to stop for police, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

He was remanded in custody before appearing at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court on Saturday, March 3, and then released on bail.

On Monday, June 18, while still on bail, Aka-Kadjo and a seventeen-year-old male friend were walking down Wyndham Road when the friend was hit from behind by a car mounting the pavement.

The driver did not stop and the victim was not seriously injured.

Before officers arrived a witness saw Aka-Kadjo get a machete from the friend's waistband and run into a nearby estate.

After a search of the area, officers found the weapon stored in an abandoned fridge and arrested Aka-Kadjo for possession of an offensive weapon.

In custody a freedom pass that did not belong to him was found in his shoe resulting in his further arrest for handling stolen goods.

The seventeen-year-old friend was taken to hospital and also arrested on Tuesday, June 19, for possession of an offensive weapon.

He pleaded guilty and was given a youth rehabilitation order and ordered to pay a victim surplus charge.

Aka-Kadjo pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods and for all weapon and dangerous driving offences and will now spend fourteen months behind bars.

Detective Constable Raymond Sekalongo, from Lambeth CID, said: “Kevin Amon Aka-Kadjo was a habitual knife carrier and is the exact type of person that we are committed to taking off of London’s streets before they can do any real damage to others or even to themselves.

“Lambeth and Southwark officers along with the wider Metropolitan Police will continue to identify and apprehend anyone who makes the decision to carry weapons.

“I hope that the sentence handed down will deter anyone else who is thinking of carrying a knife or who decides to drive with reckless disregard for the safety of others.

“It was pure luck that no-one was seriously injured or even killed by Amon Aka-Kadjo’s dangerous driving, particularly in the icy conditions at the time of the incident.”

More pupils achieve ‘good’ GCSE results

A GREATER percentage of pupils in Southwark have achieved a ‘good’ GCSE pass than ever before, continuing the borough’s excellent exam results this summer.

According to Southwark Council, 69.2 per cent of Southwark students achieved grades 9-4 for English and mathematics combined.

This is 0.8 percentage points above the 2017 pass rate of 68.4 per cent.

Provisional results indicate that

approximately half of pupils achieved a strong pass of grades 9 to 5 in English and mathematics, representing an improvement of 1.5 percentage points for 2018.

Early indications suggest results for the English Baccalaureate have also once again improved.

Nearly forty-two percent of pupils achieved grades 9-4 this year, resulting in a provisional increase of 4.5 percentage points above those in 2017.

‘All of us at Ark Globe are a big family’ say high achievers

ARK GLOBE student Kirsten Martey-Botchway celebrated after achieving six 9s, two A*s, and three 8s.

She is now aiming to study chemistry, physics and maths in the sixth form next year.

Kirsten said: “It feels a bit unreal at the moment. I am quite surprised.

I wasn’t expecting these results.

“During the holiday, I was dreading it. When I got the results, I was quite pleased and happy.

“My mum is ecstatic, my dad and rest of my siblings are very happy as well.

“At Globe the teachers really enforce the idea of having a growth mind-set and how success isn’t automatic, it comes through being resilient through failures.”

Brenda Irabor was also smiling after opening her results last week.

The student, who hopes to go to Cambridge, will study English literature, history and economics at Ark Globe sixth form.

She said: “I am really happy. I saw my first grade and I burst into tears.

“As I was reading the rest, I got happier and happier. I read the results myself, took it in.

“Then I called my mum, she was screaming on the phone.

“Then I called my cousin, who is like a sister to me; she started crying on the phone. Everyone is just really happy. Even if the GCSEs are not the end door, for me this is the biggest thing right now.

“Everyone has seen how much I put into it, how much I stressed

about it. So obviously getting the grades makes everyone happy, not just me. I feel really good, because I struggled and it’s been quite hard.

But right now I am in a place where I am just very happy and all of the efforts paid off.”

Answer Ogbonnaya found out she had been awarded one 9, an A*, four 7s, a 6 and a 5.

Her dream is to study medicine at university after completing biology, chemistry and maths for A Level.

She said: “I am happy and excited.

Overall, I think that I deserve these results, because I worked hard.

“I feel like all of us here at Ark Globe are a big family, we all help each other in many ways. Today seeing my friends doing so well, I shed a few tears.”

BACON’S COLLEGE says its GCSE results are continuing a trend in improved standards after 68 per cent of students achieved five or more 9-4 grades including English and maths.

This year’s results are the first from the school since it became part of the national schools group United Learning.

Taken under the new GCSE grading structure, the results represent a seven percentage point increase on last year’s achievement.

Seventy-three per cent of students achieved a grade 4 or above in both English and maths, and 48 per cent achieved a 5 or above.

The school said its English results were particularly impressive, with 85 per cent of pupils achieving a 4 or above, and 76 per cent gaining at least a 5.

Star performers include Yousef Ullah, who achieved eight grade 9s and two

grade 8s, Jie Lin, who achieved seven grade 9s and three grades 8s, and Shelly Ngo with six 9s and four 8s.

Principal James Wilson said: “Students and staff have worked incredibly hard this year to secure improved academic standards and these very pleasing results are testament to that effort and commitment.

“Students should feel justifiably proud of their achievements, which give them

strong foundations on which to build as they continue into Sixth Form and beyond. The results bear out that the school’s re-focus on academic progress and raised expectations for each and every student is already yielding returns.

“I have no doubt that these results will be the starting point for further improvements at Bacon’s over the coming years as part of United Learning.”

Charter students celebrate ‘excellent’ results

THE CHARTER School has increased the percentage of students achieving a standard pass or above in their GCSEs this year to 84 per cent compared to 76 per cent in 2017.

The school said: • 68 per cent gained a strong pass in both English and Maths (grade 5 to 9) – up from 61 per cent last year • 39 per cent of all grades gained this year were 7-9 or A*/A this year • 36 per cent of pupils achieved five 79 (or A*/A) grades in their GCSEs, up from 35 per cent in 2017 • 51 per cent of pupils gained the English Baccalaureate • 77 per cent of pupils gained at least one 7-9 or A*/A grade In BTEC subjects 100 per cent of business students, 87 per cent of sports and leisure students, 62 per cent of ICT students and 54 per cent of child development students gained a level 2 or above. Students with top marks included Vita Love, who gained eleven GCSEs with ten at grade 9 and one A*, Jessie Ross who gained nine grade 9 GCSEs and one grade 8, and Mary Nesbitt who was awarded eight grade 9 results and one A*.

92% at JAGs get A* or A

JAMES ALLEN’S Girls’ School are celebrating an outstanding 92 per cent of pupils achieving an A* or an A.

Seventy five per cent of all GCSE results were A* or equivalent and 56 per cent of all grades achieved were at the new top grade of 9 in the reformed and more rigorous courses. Twenty four girls earned A*s or equivalent in every subject they sat. Maths grades were particularly strong with 98 per cent of grades ranging between A* and A. Sara Glover, who steps down this year as Head of Maths, said: "The Maths grades achieved by year 11 are simply amazing. This success doesn’t happen overnight, but is the result of a five-year plan and very much a team effort. I am especially thrilled for our pupils who worked so hard, they did all we asked and more. I cannot think of a better way to end my 22 years as Head of Maths.”

The Head of James Allen's Girls' School, Sally-Anne Huang said: "It’s not often that a head teacher is lost for words, but I am unable to express how proud I am of our pupils and staff. To achieve these results at a point when GCSE’s have been more testing and rigorous is an indication of what JAGS girls and teachers can do, and I am extremely excited to see what they

achieve in the sixth form."

Charlotte, who achieved five nines, six A* grades and the top mark in Advanced Maths, said: "I’m very happy with my results, which I put down to the great teachers at JAGS and hard work.

I’m excited to be going on to studying A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Latin in the sixth form at JAGS.” Juliana is celebrating achieving seven nines and three A* grades. She said: "All the girls were nervous about the reformed courses, but the teachers gave excellent guidance and made it a positive experience. I am overwhelmed and relieved by my results and will now study Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics in the sixth form at JAGS." Lilliana, who is celebrating seven 9s and three A*s, said: "I am relieved and even surprised by my GCSE results, and I am also really pleased for the teachers who worked so hard on our behalf. They gave us a real sense of what to expect and how to revise. I found the revision tough at first, but after lots of practice I have the hang of it now. I will study A Level Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Music in the sixth form at JAGS and am excited to continue participating in the school's music ensembles and choir.”

According to the school, 40 per cent of girls were awarded at least one top grade 8-9, and more than a quarter secured at least one grade 9.

The academy has seen an improvement in results for the demanding English Baccalaureate with 49 per cent gaining at least a grade 4, compared with 42 per cent in 2017.

Lilly Mahoney is one of only a few students to have achieved 8 or more of the new 'super grade' 9.

She is joined by Mistura Aderibigbe who gained seven grade 9s.

Mistura said: “I am overwhelmed. I exceeded my expectations of myself.

Hard work pays off.”

Lilly added: “I am shocked and proud of my results. They mean I can go on to study the subjects I want to. I have achieved these results through lots of revision, resilience and not giving up.”

Naomi Emohara, who achieved three 8s, one 7 and three 6s, said: “I am over the moon. I wasn’t expecting this result.

I am really happy and I am not the only one to exceed my expectations but my friends did too.”

Amaal Ali, who achieved one 9, two 8s, four 7s and an A grade among her results said: “It feels surreal. Your entire year is working up to this day. Now we have got what we wanted.”

Rebecca Iles-Smith, Principal Harris Academy Bermondsey, said: “We are thrilled to be celebrating a record set of results at our academy. Our girls have performed fantastically well across all subjects, including the demanding EBacc. Sacred Heart hopes to be amongst the best performing schools in country

SACRED HEART is hoping to top Southwark's GCSE results league again this year.

Last year the Roman Catholic school in Camberwell came 20th in the entire country, and says it has achieved even better results this year.

Sixty-two per cent of pupils achieved a 'strong pass' in both English and maths, while 83 per cent of pupils achieved a standard pass in both English and maths.

Headteacher Mr Serge Cefai said: “Last year Sacred Heart found itself in the top 20 schools in the country for the overall measure of school performance.

"Despite new specifications in most subject areas and despite the move from A*-G to 9-1, we are delighted to report that this year’s

GCSE results have even superseded last year’s incredible results.

“Congratulations to our pupils and,

of course, our hard working staff, who have achieved the fantastic results that their endeavours deserve.

"We await national context but feel

confident that we will once again be among the leading schools in the country.”

Freddie’s ‘unbelievable’ record at Kingsdale

Ilinka ‘overwhelmed’ by her top grades

A KINGSDALE student has set what teachers describe as an 'unbelievable record' with his sweep of fantastic GCSE results - which are equivalent to fourteen A*s or better under the old grading system.

Frederick Mitchell, known as Freddie, was awarded ten Grade 9s, one A**, two A*s and a Grade 8 in his exams.

His Grade 8 in Spanish has been sent off for a remark in the hope that he may yet achieve a clean sweep of top grades.

Freddie's teachers believe the fantastic results are likely to set a national record - and say they'd be surprised if it could be bettered in the near future.

This could mean that the school has produced the country's top performing GCSE student for five years in a row.

Freddie said, “Honestly, I’m speechless. It’s a sensational feeling but I was not expecting these results.

"I tried my hardest and it has paid off!

"The academic and emotional support from my parents and the school has without doubt contributed to my achievements.

"Thank you all for your help!”

Harris East Dulwich’s ‘fantastic’ results

HARRIS ACADEMY East Dulwich is celebrating a 'fantastic set of results' after 73 per cent of students achieved at least five GCSEs including English and Maths.

Forty-seven per cent of students passed the demanded English Baccalaureate - seven percentage points higher than last summer.

A third of students achieved grades 79 in English and 60 per cent did so in biology, chemistry and physics.

More than 70 per cent gained 7-9 grades in psychology or business.

High achiever Etta Selim was award 9s in biology, chemistry 9, citizenship studies, English language, English literature and geography and Spanish, and an A* in Portuguese and an A* in Latin. She gained 8s in maths and physics.

Alanna Okunneye was also celebrating having achieved grade 9 in English language, English literature, maths, biology, chemistry, physics, Spanish and an 8 in geography.

Principal Carrie Senior said: "I’d like to congratulate each of our Year eleven students on their fantastic results.

"It is such a privilege to lead a school with such outstanding and committed

to be true.”

The school says more than ten students achieved four or more Grade 9s, and provisional results show that approximately 80 per cent of students were awarded a good pass in both English and maths.

NOTRE DAME Girls Schools' star performers celebrated their GCSE results.

Erica Aguilar achieved an amazing five grade 9s, four 8s, one 7, one A* and A grades in French, Portuguese and Spanish at AS Level.

Moselle Zoumavo was awarded three 9s, two 8s, three 7s, one 6, one 5 and a B in French at AS Level.

‘We are proud of them all’ says St Michael’s principal

ST MICHAEL'S Catholic College says the number of grades 7 to 9, roughly equivalent to A and A* in the previous system, has increased by a third, with more than 30 per cent achieving the coveted grades.

The Bermondsey school says there have also been substantial increases in the percentage of students achieving every grade above grade 4.

Toni Iheonye, who achieved an incredible nine grade 9s said: "I’m proud of myself – I worked really

hard for these and I am glad that it paid off. When I told my mum she screamed."

Other highly successful students included Matthew Huynh, who said: "I feel really proud of myself – I am shocked at how well I have done. My

mum is delighted."

Aalia Cabiles, who achieved the equivalent of what would have been 10 A* grades, was also delighted.

"I expected to do well but not that well," she said. "I have already told my parents and my sister who feel

really blessed by these grades."

ST SAVIOUR'S and St Olave's headteacher, Ms Catherine May, said that despite changes to examination systems and 'intense pressure', 84 per cent of year eleven pupils achieved grades 4 to 9 in English and maths.

Overall, the school says 81 per cent of pupils achieved grades 4 to 9 in English and maths and at least three other subjects at grade 4 or above.

Ms May told the News the results were some of the best in the school's 115-year history: "I am absolutely thrilled with these results and so proud of our students.

"They met the challenge of these new exams with focus and determination and worked incredibly hard. This success is well deserved.

"Our students have been well supported by their families, our teachers and our support staff, and amongst the joy and celebrations today students have been expressing their thanks.

"I look forward to them continuing this great success into the sixth form.”

She added: "These wonderful GCSEs followed last week’s terrific set of A level results, which saw students gaining places at a wide variety of top-flight institutions, including Oxbridge and other Russell group universities, to read medicine, architecture, law and arts amongst others."

THE FIRST cohort to receive GCSES at Ark All Saints Academy were anxiously awaiting their results last week.

One of them, Maté Polgari, got a fantastic four 8s, three 7s and two 6s.

This is a particularly impressive result as he had only joined the school in year 9 after he moved to the UK from Hungary without speaking English.

He said: “The teachers prepared us so well. Of course the GCSEs were stressful but when I saw the exam I was so surprised because it seemed so easy.

Lorcan was delighted to gain three

8s, one 7, five 6s and one 5, and is now hoping to learn more about media, advertising and psychology.

He said: “I want to take psychology, I have a real genuine interest in that as a subject.

“As well as that, I want to take biology because my strong suit is science.

“I also want to do Media Studies.

My dad has a degree in media studies, but it’s not just that.

“I want to be able to understand what goes on in the world around me, the subliminal messages you see in advertising. It’s so interesting.

biology are interlinked, it makes sense.”

And he praised the support he received from the school, saying: “It’s a very supportive school.

“I didn’t start off at this school, so I know what other places can be like.

“The care that you receive here from the teachers is unlike any other school probably in the whole of south London.

“They really help you, you never feel alone. There’s always a staff member who will talk to you.

“Having been to another school, I really appreciate Ark All Saints Academy.”

HIGH ACHIEVERS from Ark Walworth have shared their delight at doing so well in their GCSEs.

Khalil Admed Dobson said: “My family is really proud of me and Ark Walworth Academy has helped me choose the right career path.”

He will now study maths, chemistry, biology and history in the sixth form.

TWINS FROM Ark Evelyn Grace Academy have said they ‘keep each other going’ and are each other’s ‘main inspirations’ after smashing their GCSEs. Emmanuella Sarpong found out last week she had got grade 8s in chemistry and food, five grade 7s in English literature, maths, biology, physics and geography, and two 6s in English language and P.E. She said: “I was excited results day was finally here. I’m just feeling so thankful that I achieved these grades.

“My teachers have always been there for me and encouraged me.

“Support-wise, they couldn’t have done anything else.

“It’s great having my twin brother at school, he always keeps me going.”

Twin brother Emmanuel, who got three grade 7s in maths, PE and business studies, six grade 6s in biology, chemistry, English language, English literature, geography, history and physics said: “It still hasn’t sunk in yet! I was nervous this morning, the wait was the worst part. The school have definitely helped develop me as a person. My twin sister is one of my main inspirations.

“Having her at school with me always made life easier.

“I’m looking forward to the next step and studying for my A levels.”

Royal Mail decision to close sorting office is just putting profit first

AM extremely disappointed that Royal Mail has now confirmed that the SE22 delivery office on Silvester Road which serves the wider East Dulwich area, parts of Dulwich Village and Peckham Rye, will close on 17 September.

Delivery offices provide a vital service for local residents and small businesses, enabling parcels to be collected and registered post to be signed for.

Although the SE22 delivery office has for some years been too small for the volume of parcels it handles leading, in particular, to a situation during the busy Christmas period when for several weeks parcels are sorted in the street, there is no excuse for Royal Mail closing it and not providing a replacement collection facility within the SE22 postcode area. Need for this facility in the area is very high, with residents queuing down the street on Saturday mornings to collect

COUPLE of years ago over a 2-month period, ten people I knew were diagnosed with cancer. MacMillan Cancer Support say a staggering 50% of people in UK will have cancer in their lifetimes. This equates to an estimated 144,000 people in Southwark may get cancer.

In 2015, the World Health Organisation officially added the commonly used pesticide ingredient glyphosate to the list of probable causes of cancer.

Last month, a US court awarded a grounds-person $289 million dollars compensation for the cancer they found he contracted due to his job spraying the chemical.

So this column contacted Southwark Council to ask them if they were using this chemical. They confirmed that 1,500 litres per year are sprayed on the borough’s roads and council estates.

Way back in the mid-nineties when I was a councillor, my constituents on the Aylesbury Estate complained of chemicalallergies to the chemicals sprayed on our council estates, streets and parks. With the Lib Dems, we successfully got the then Labour administration to ban them. They switched to manual-weeding and won several national awards for protecting residents from such chemicals.

However, when elected the Lib Dem/Tory coalition under Nick Stanton reversed their own policy and started spraying our streets again with chemicals. The new Labour administration, under Cllr Peter John has continued this renewed spraying. Just two weeks ago, a man in a white moon-suit went along my street again spraying everywhere.

Ever since I found out that Royal Mail was planning to close the SE22 delivery office, I have led a vigorous campaign against it, calling on Royal Mail to provide an alternative collection facility in the SE22 postcode area. I organised a public meeting, an online survey for local residents, and a protest outside the delivery office; and I led a debate in Parliament on delivery office closures and the impact they are having nationally as well as locally. I have met with Royal Mail

on several occasions, and together with local councillors delivered a letter in person to the Chief Executive of Royal Mail.

It is testament to an organisation which is quite clearly putting profit before the residents it serves that Royal Mail has not changed their plans for SE22. A NEW street food and crafts market is set to launch in Peckham with a focus on local foods and businesses.

Kerb X, a street food company, will open a new market on September 1

in Blenheim Grove, with stalls showcasing street food, as well as locally sourced arts, crafts, and produce.

The market will be open every Saturday, with classic food stall fare like burgers, poke bowls and burgers.

BLUE PETER gardener Chris Collins is the guest judge at The Walworth Garden Show.

The TV presenter will also be part of a Question Time-style panel at the show, to answer questions by the audience.

The expert, who appeared on ITV’s Good Morning and BBC Breakfast, before becoming the Blue Peter Gardens for nine years, told the News he was ‘honoured and excited’ to be part of the show.

“Judging shows is never easy, but I’m excited for it. I’ve done a lot of work around community gardening,

and it is one of the best ways to bring people together.”

He will not only be a judge, but also hand out prizes for various categories including best vegetable, fruit and flower.

The show, on September 29 in Nursery Row Park, will also feature a scything demonstration planned in the nearby wildflower meadow, and a giant haystack in the park.

The event is held as part of a series of gardening-related pop up events organised by the Walworth Community Gardening Network (WCGN). They aim to bring neighbourhoods together to encourage community garden growth in Walworth.

GAVIN ROSE has promised new signings in an attempt to propel his Dulwich Hamlet side up the National League South table.

Rose was very unhappy with his team’s performance on Saturday against Gloucester City, and a somewhat fortuitous victory over Slough Town on Bank Holiday Monday is unlikely to have alleviated his worries.

Rose was highly critical of players in certain positions and will be ushering some towards the exit door.

On Saturday, Rose was critical of his side’s inability to finish off attacking moves. “[It] epitomises the first six games of the season,” he said. “We saw a lot of the ball and made bad decisions on the ball. The other team didn’t have to do much to stop us penetrating them. We had opportunities to score goals, which we should be taking. We just seem to think we’re going to get another chance and it just doesn’t work like that. There needs to be a lot more accountability for the players playing in key areas at the top of the pitch.”

He was equally displeased with his team’s performance at the opposite end of the pitch in the 1-0 loss to Gloucester.

He said: “Once again, Daniel Pappoe - as he’s done too many times - has given away a corner for no apparent reason. Then we’ve been incapable of defending a pretty basic ball if I’m honest with you.

“[Goalkeeper] Preston [Edwards] will hold his hands up and say he should’ve done better. But their team

gave nothing away after defending against maybe ten, eleven or twelve corners.

CHRIS PHILLIPS said there were lessons to be learned following Millwall Lionesses’ defeat to Charlton in the FA Continental Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Charlton striker Kit Graham opened the scoring for the hosts in the tenth minute when her 20-yard effort beat goalkeeper Grace Taylor.

Gabby Ravenscroft levelled for the Lionesses with a left-footed strike from outside the box. The striker also played an integral role in Millwall’s second goal as she took the ball around Charlton’s keeper and squared it to her strike partner, Evie Clarke, who slotted it home from six yards.

Millwall’s hard work was undone by another slow start in the second half as Graham scored her second to equalise for the hosts.

down the right wing and after some clever footwork squared it to Ellie Bailes who found the far corner.

Charlton then sealed victory when Gemma Bryan was put through on goal before she cut back inside and then fired home to make it 4-2.

“I saw good energy from my team, I felt the times that they got the ball down and played they moved it quickly, and that’s what we are going to try and do more,” first-team boss Phillips said.

“It was their first experience of firstteam football for a lot of them so they will have picked up a lot of learning experiences from this. This group has only had four to five weeks to gel and came up against a really physical side.

We learned a lot things and we will come back [Monday] and start training ahead of our next match in two weeks’ time Phillips was delighted both his strikers got off the mark so early in the season.

He said: “Gabby’s was a great goal,

especially with her left foot, she will be happy with that one. For Evie’s, a few of the girls thought that Gabby was shooting but she 100 per cent tells me that she saw Evie free and assisted her goal. I’m as pleased as punch for the both of them” Ravenscroft recently signed from Arsenal Ladies after finishing last season as the Development League’s top scorer. She added: “I’m buzzing to start the season off with a goal and happy to give Evie an assist for hers.

“I think as a team we are fit and, when we are in possession, we showed that we can move the ball quickly.

“But I think we need to be a bit more physical.”

“I think some of the girls thought the game was won [at half-time], we switched off and lost the ball in stupid areas.

“As a team, we will recover well and we will go straight back into it in a couple of weeks [against Lewes FC] and show what we are about.”

“One against us and we seem to give something away, which shows where we are at the moment – our levels of

concentration, responsibility and accountability for our jobs are very low and that’s the reason why we’re dominating games but still losing them.”

Rose is looking to new recruits to improve Dulwich’s fortunes. They are eighteenth in the table after Monday’s 2-1 win at Slough.

“Any supporter would be able to point out the fact that we’re missing chances, we’re moving the ball too slowly and we’re giving away silly corners and free-kicks and then conceding,” Rose continued.

“Anyone could see that without an in-depth knowledge of football. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see it – the players can see that and if they can’t they shouldn’t be playing.

“The truth of the matter is that I need to get new players in. I’ve looked at one or two [at the club] and I think they’re not going to be able to do what I need them to do. We’ve worked really hard as a club to get to this level and we’re not just going to allow ourselves to go straight back down. At the moment the mentality looks like that and we need to change that quickly.”

However, Rose remained coy over exactly which players would be coming or leaving.

“I can’t give any indication yet. We haven’t got the space to keep players at the club and add to the squad, so players will have to go. That’s the first thing – identifying the players that have to go and the ones that are going to replace them.”

Hamlet are away at Hampton & Richmond on Saturday at 3pm.

The Millwall Challenge is the Millwall Community Trust’s award scheme for 5-12- year old boys and girls, delivered by FA and UEFA qualified coaches. The Challenge is designed to have a structured and progressive pathway to develop children’s core football skills, creating maximum enjoyment and involvement to help young footballers realise their full potential.

The Challenge lasts for 10-12 weeks and concentrates on the games four essential skills of dribbling, passing, control and shooting, as well as improving fundamental skills such as coordination, balance, speed and linking to the four-corner model of technical, physical, psychological and social aspects of the game.

Millwall Challenge weekly sessions are to be held at Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park from 4-5 PM, with the first session held on Monday 3rd September and running until Monday 19th August 2019.

TODDLER SOCCER

Toddler Soccer is a great introduction to football. It helps children from a very young age to interact with their peers.

It is a fun-based concept aimed at 3-4-year-old children and to encourage all aspects of mental and physical development using football as

the tool. Every activity is intended to improve motor skills, balance, co-ordination and skills of agility.

The object of the programme is to create a fun and playful, but also educational atmosphere.

On completion of the Toddler Soccer programme, the children will develop basic all-round football skills in dribbling,

passing and control.

The sessions are short and designed to be extremely good fun. Players will be taught to improve communication, motor skills, and special awareness and it is a great introduction to football.

Weekly Sessions for Toddler Soccer will be held at The Castle Leisure centre from

Not a Brad deal ‘Relief’ that transfer fee finally broken

NEIL HARRIS has insisted there is no pressure on new club-record buy Tom Bradshaw – because the Millwall boss thinks he got a bargain.

Bradshaw moved to the Lions from Barnsley late last week on a loan deal that will automatically become a seven-figure permanent transfer next January 1.

That will officially break the transfer record almost 29 years after Millwall paid Derby County £800,000 for Paul Goddard.

Bradshaw, 26, made his Lions debut against Rotherham last Sunday but was cup-tied for the second round of the EFL Cup against Plymouth on Wednesday

night.

Harris revealed Bradshaw was Millwall’s main target this summer, and a transfer was almost agreed before the deadline for permanent deals on August 9.

Bradshaw scored eighteen league goals in 58 starts and 28 substitute appearances for Barnsley after joining from Walsall for £600,000 in 2016.

Millwall finally secured their man after seeing several bids rejected during the summer.

“I wasn’t confident at all, it was on and off for so long,” Harris said. “We chased him because even for a club-record fee we still feel it’s really good value for money in the current market.

“We had to be patient with it. He was always the number one target for the

summer because he’s something a little bit different to what we’ve got.

“He’s not Lee Gregory, he’s not Steve Morison and he’s not Tom Elliott. He’s a completely different player and I think he showed that last weekend. His link-up play and movement in the penalty area is phenomenal.

“We have to find a way of utilising him best and getting the best out of him. It’ll be great for all our strikers, we’ve got a combination with all of them offering something different. Before maybe we were pigeonholed into what we do, now we have that different sort of lead player.

“Like Jiri [Skalak] and Murray [Wallace] it will take him a little bit of time to get used to us. The guys will get there and the international break will be great for them.

“With regards to the transfer fee it’s been something that’s been hanging over the club a long time. It’s been a topic of conversation and I think it’s a relief for everyone that it’s finally gone.

“The market has moved so dramatically, as we’ve seen with the values we get

It was hard to provide a defence for how Millwall conceded, given they barely provided a defence themselves. They unforgivably

allowed a two-on-one to develop at a throw-in on the right, only O’Brien trying to defend a cross. Will Vaulks lifted the ball into the box and Sean Raggett nodded into the bottom corner to give Rotherham a 20thminute lead.

Millwall improved after the break with Wallace covering a huge amount of ground and providing most of the attacking finesse. He set up Tom Elliott for a turn and shot that hit

Rodak’s boot. Then Wallace, playing in central midfield now, went past a Rotherham player but fired a leftfooted effort just wide.

Rotherham could have extended their advantage. From counterattacks, Ryan Williams and Ryan Manning fired just wide, before Michael Smith got through on goal and Jordan Archer did well to save.

It leaves Harris with a lot to ponder, and hinted at a difficult season ahead.

IT WASN’T just the constant rain, the grey backdrop and the result that made this a depressing Sunday afternoon.

It was also to do with who wasn’t at the New York Stadium last weekend as Millwall lost for the second time in five days in South Yorkshire.

There was no George Saville, concussed in the previous game – meaning a mandatory six days without any action – but over whose Millwall future there were doubts with Middlesbrough hovering.

There was no Shaun Hutchinson, who is set to miss an unspecified period of time. It was the first game in 55 he wasn’t in the Millwall starting line-up in the league.

There was no Fred Onyedinma, who seems to have used up all his chances.

Even with absences from the squad Onyedinma still didn’t travel to Rotherham. It’s such a pity if his time is up but you can’t blame Lions boss Neil Harris for his patience running out. Onyedinma showed in the last two seasons, including against Premier League sides, how much potential he has. But he has been a senior professional for five seasons

TOM BRADSHAW sang ‘I believe I can fly’ for his initiation song last weekend – and Millwall fans will be hoping he lives up to the lyrics.

Bradshaw will be anticipating plenty of crosses into the box in what he hopes will be a successful Lions career, though it was from the deck he scored a brace the last time he was at The Den when Barnsley defeated Millwall 3-1 in September 2017.

Barnsley were relegated on the last day of the season, which meant Bradshaw was always likely to leave this summer.

When he became aware of Millwall’s interest there was never going to be any other destination.

The transfer dragged on most of the summer, before he heard after Barnsley’s 4-0 win at Rochdale last week that the clubs had come to an agreement.

“I knew about Millwall at the start of the summer and for me it was a great move, going back to the Championship and playing for a club the size of Millwall,” Bradshaw told the News in his first exclusive interview since becoming the Lions’ record signing.

“There were a few clubs sniffing around but once I heard Millwall were interested it was a case of it being the deal I wanted to get done.

“The move was perfect for me and I told my agent that it was a move I would definitely be interested in. I made it very clear. I tried not to get too involved in it all, it was public knowledge and there was a lot of toing and froing, a lot of bids went in and got rejected.

“I find it best to leave that to my representatives and if it happened it happened and if it didn’t. I would have got my head down. I’ve always been professional in that sense. I’ll always do well for whichever club I’m playing for.

permanent deals] closed I lost a bit of hope, but the way the window is these days even when it’s closed there are still deals to be done.

“It was exciting. I found out after Barnsley’s game last Tuesday that everything had been accepted so it was just a case of getting down to London and getting all the contracts signed.

“As soon as I got that phone call I was over the moon.”

The move also suited as Bradshaw’s girlfriend and her family live in Bexley,

while his brother and his family are close by.

And there is one particular purchase he intends to make for his nephew.

“There are a few Millwall fans among the family, but mainly Arsenal. Glory hunters, I think,” Bradshaw joked. “My brother’s family are West Ham fans so that makes it a bit spicy. I’m going to get my nephew a little Millwall shirt and see how that’s going to go down.

“All my girlfriend’s family live in Bexley so location-wise it was perfect. And from

a football point of view it was perfect as well.”

There was one other reason Bradshaw wanted the move. He has three international caps for Wales, and is keen to attract the attention of Dragons boss Ryan Giggs and add to the tally.

“To play international football you have to be playing at the highest levels,” Bradshaw continued. “Dropping down to League One doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be out of the squad but international managers look for players at the higher

levels.

“It was a factor in my decision. I love playing for my country. I’ve been involved quite a few times with squads and I just want to keep playing with Wales. “[Neil Harris] had watched me for a few years, I’ve played against [Millwall] a load of times. He knows my game and he wants more of the same – getting in the box and getting goals.

“I’ll always work hard for the team, press the ball and chase lost causes. That’s something I’ll bring to the team.”

NEIL HARRIS is calling on his players to return to being a “powerful, aggressive Millwall team” when they face Swansea in front of the Sky Sports cameras at The Den on Saturday evening.

The Lions lost successive league games away from home for the first time since March 2017 and are looking to revive their Championship form in their own backyard.

Swansea haven’t won in three league games and are 10th in the table, three

points above Millwall. Graham Potter took over the Swans this summer after leading Swedish side Ostersund from the fourth to the first division within five years and to the last 32 of the Europa League last season, including a 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates.

“Graham’s taken on a tough position in the medium term, the team’s been relegated and immediately it becomes about financial budgets again, as we seem to talk about a lot,” Harris said.

“He has to turn around a group of players with people in and people out. He did a remarkable job in Europe, what he achieved, in surreal circumstances, to be

honest. It was a great story and I really look forward to meeting him at the weekend.

“He’s gone to a really big club at this level. I enjoy listening to him when he talks. There’s a real freshness and honesty about his comments.

“We know it’s going to be a testing game because they’ve got really good players.

They’ve had a stop-start beginning to their season, a little bit like us.

“We’re all striving for that consistency.

They’re no different.

“He’s got them playing a good passing game and they’re a really dangerous side.

They’ve got some players that can hurt

you, as the majority of teams do at this level.

“It’s another game for us at The Den where we’ve got to try to impose ourselves and stop the opposition doing what they’re good it.

“And we have to ensure that we’re better on the ball than we have been in the last couple of games.

“We’ve certainly got to cut out the schoolboy defensive errors that have cost us. We’ve let six goals in in six games league and cup [before Wednesday]. It’s not a disaster and a lot of other clubs would be happy with that, but with my standards and our normal defensive

“We’ve got to get back to that cleansheet mentality, standing strong at difficult times which served us in such good stead last season.

“We need to use the ball better than the last couple of times on the road, get back to being that really powerful, aggressive Millwall team.”

GEORGE SAVILLE was close to a move to Middlesbrough this week – but Millwall were not prepared to let him go without signing a replacement.

Saville didn’t train with the first-team at Calmont Road on Tuesday morning, and when we went to press on Wednesday Boro were confident of completing the transfer.

After Middlesbrough’s win over Rochdale in the second round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, boss Tony Pulis refused to comment on any individual player but confirmed he expected signings before Friday’s 5pm deadline. “Yes, so I won’t continue to

talk. I’m hoping the next couple of days will be busy.”

Saville, 25, joined Millwall from Wolves last summer and his loss to the squad would be significant. The exChelsea midfielder scored ten goals from midfield last season as Millwall finished eighth in the Championship.

He also made his international debut for Northern Ireland.

After breaking their transfer record last week to sign Tom Bradshaw from Barnsley, this week has been a difficult one for the club.

Middlesbrough tried to sign Saville, and his team-mate Jed Wallace, before the August 9 deadline for permanent deals, but renewed their interest after that cut-off, which meant little for EFL clubs’ transfer plans as they could still

complete loan deals until August 31.

Millwall have fielded enquiries for a large number of their first-team players this summer, with interest intensifying in recent weeks, and boss Neil Harris hinted that his dressing room has been affected. He said: “There’s been continued interest in a lot of my players. It’s been a challenging few weeks for us as a changing room.”

Millwall were busy this week trying to line up a potential replacement for Saville, one of the options Sheffield United’s Ryan Leonard.

The club spent a large part of last summer trying to sign Leonard from Southend, seeing a final bid of around half a millions pounds turned down.

Sheffield United last January, but has played just 60 minutes in the Championship this season.

Meanwhile, the club were also searching for a club to send Fred Onyedinma on loan to. Onyedinma, 21, hasn’t played in the league this season and was left out of the matchday squad at Rotherham last Sunday.

Onyedinma has previously spent time on loan at Wycombe.

Millwall have three players with first-team experience on loan in League One and League Two, including Ben Thompson and Sid Nelson at Portsmouth and Swindon, respectively. Despite injuries in defence and uncertainty in midfield, Millwall do not have the option to recall those players until January.

Centre-back Hutchinson suffered the setback against Sheffield Wednesday last week.

Byron Webster and Murray Wallace are in competition to partner Jake Cooper in the centre of Millwall’s defence against Swansea on Saturday.

Wallace started his first league game against Rotherham last Sunday.

Lions boss Neil Harris said: “I’m trying to be as honest as I can with it in the sense of saying that we’re probably looking at about a six-week period.

That’s a rough estimate at the moment, it’s still early days.

“It’s a real freak one. He got a challenge around the 45-minute mark and played the rest of the game with no problems.

“He was fine getting on the bus, but got off the bus and he was in a really bad way. He came in the following day and his knee had swollen up.

“It’s a crazy one and it’s unfortunate for him and us. He’s a really big part of our squad, vice-captain to the team.

“We try to limit injuries to the bare minimum with a tight squad, but this is a freak one that we can’t avoid, same as we had with Byron Webster and Shaun Williams last year.

“But Murray came in and did well on Sunday and Byron is edging towards full fitness all the time. With Byron it’s just about getting that little bit of sharpness.

He’s come on really well.”
