Was the ‘Lion of London Bridge’ nominated for a bravery award?

C

an a single heroic act be taken in isolation, and mean that you be feted for that bravery? Or should any recognition be dependent on a wider analysis of your character and actions?

You could construct a compelling case for Roy Larner, the ‘Lion of London Bridge’ to be a recipient of a gallantry award for taking on the armed jihadis who struck at London Bridge on June 3 last year. More than 23,000 people thought so, signing a petition for him to be awarded a George Cross.

Equally you could argue that someone who was subsequently convicted of racially-aggravated common assault and religiously-aggravated harassment should not be honoured with such recognition.

Roy only avoided prison through a suspended sentence, after shouting racist abuse at a protester and then launching into a racist outburst at MP Neil Coyle’s office.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other - how would you feel if you were the victim of Roy’s abuse and saw him receiving an award, or how would you feel if he had helped to save your life at London Bridge and saw him miss out?

Whatever people’s views, we deserve a clear explanation. The Cabinet Office told us this week that it could not comment on individual cases, but it should make its decision-making process clear. Was Roy nominated or not?

Experts excavating near railway arches have already found medieval drains

ARCHAEOLOGISTS HOPING to find Roman remains have begun excavating near London Bridge.

The team from the Museum of London Archaeology Team is now working on the railway arch site.

According to researchers, the area is known to have been in use in Roman times.

Back then, the city of Londinium

was on marshland and the Thames was much wider than today, with water channels flowing past small islands.

In the medieval period, the site became part of the outer garden of Winchester Palace, the London residence of the Bishop of Winchester.

The team has already found evidence of Roman buildings made of clay and timber, and medieval drains.

In 2017 an extremely rare Roman

sarcophagus was found in an ancient grave site on Harper Road.

It was taken to the Museum of London, where it has recently been put on show as part of a new exhibition.

The lid of the sarcophagus, a stone coffin, was found to have been partially moved, indicating it may have been targeted by grave robbers.

Research in 2017 showed that area of Roman Southwark was a focus for ‘ritual activity’, which had a huge cemetery.

MP Coyle: ‘bullies and trolls in my own party just need to grow up’

NEIL COYLE has gone to war with elements within his own party, launching a stinging attack on bullies and online ‘trolls’ within Labour and telling them to ‘grow up’.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP said he would stand up to “Tory Islamophobia, Lib Dem hypocrisy or antisemitism and bullying and the need to tackle it within Labour”, and has vowed he will not be silenced by his critics.

His comments come after a row over Elephant and Castle regeneration plans was stoked by new claims that hard-left Momentum supporters were ‘bullying’ centrists within the party.

A defiant Coyle said: “In three years as your MP I have sadly witnessed an explosion in online abuse and bullying as well as pockets of problems within the Labour Party itself.

“I will always stand up against racists and bullies wherever they appear.

“I hope I have shown, in the last three years, that I am prepared to stand up to my own Party if I think it is moving in the wrong direction, including voting against the whip if it is in local people's interests.”

And he revealed to the News: “When Jo Cox and I wrote an article for the Guardian together we got a lot of online abuse.

“Shockingly, many men called her office to abuse her - and not one called me.

“Women politicians get far more abuse by email and online and social media platforms do not do enough to tackle this phenomenon.

“When I recently tweeted about

bullying, my phone went into meltdown due to the 'pile-on' organised by left-wing commentators.

“I can ignore much of this as it is not from constituents - who will always be my priority.

“But it meant losing my phone for a day as the notifications prevented me from using it.

“This could prevent me communicating with people with urgent casework, or even with my own family.

“The trolls who commit this kind of organised harassment should grow up.

“I will not be silenced by any amount of trolling and will continue to speak out, whether against Tory Islamophobia, Lib Dem hypocrisy, or antisemitism and bullying and the need to tackle it within Labour.

“I know from my correspondence and discussions with constituents that I speak for the majority of local people and will continue to do so.”

Coyle’s allegations come in the wake of

Southwark Council’s planning committee’s controversial approval of Delancey’s regeneration plans for the Elephant and Castle shopping centre on July 3, with a four-to-three margin with one abstention.

After Faraday Ward passed a motion rejecting the council’s decision and asking Sadiq Khan to step in to force the developers to improve their offer, Coyle took to Twitter to accuse certain Labour councillors and online commentators of bullying councillors who had greenlit the plans.

In a strong worded tweet he wrote: “What a sad bunch of bullies. Shameful treatment of a white, working class woman Cllr. Understand planning, grow up, and stop your bullying.”

It was widely understood he was referring to Cllr Lorraine Lauder MBE, co-chair of Southwark’s planning committee, and ward councillor for Faraday, who voted in favour of the scheme while her fellow ward councillors

are strongly opposed.

Critics of the scheme want the Greater London Authority to push the developers to increase the amount of social housing and do more to protect its bingo and bowling facilities.

The motion has now been passed by Labour-run North Walworth, Faraday and Chaucer wards.

And, according to Southwark Momentum, the entire Camberwell and Peckham constituency branch of the party voted in favour the motion at last week’s AGM, with just two abstentions, and Dulwich and West Norwood Labour have also unanimously backed the motion.

In July 2017, the News reported 300 black and ethnic minority Labour Party members signed an open letter to ‘raise concerns’ about the deselection of Faraday Ward councillor Samantha JuryDada, a young, black, and LGBT woman.

Jury-Dada lost by just one vote to Jack Buck, who is now a councillor in the ward and vocal in his opposition to Delancey’s plans.

“I was hesitant because I did not want to endure another four years of the way I was being treated in my branch, despite numerous complaints,” she tweeted to her followers at the time.

Chris Bright, a spokesperson for Southwark Momentum, said he felt the wording in Coyle’s original tweet had been ‘unwise’, arguing: “Opposing a planning decision isn’t bullying’.

He told the News that although he could not comment on specific allegations, in general attacks on the Southwark group were ‘unfounded’, and based on political disagreements.

“There is obviously a right-wing press agenda to paint people on the left as hectoring and bullying,” he said.

the group. Momentum are mostly people who knit their own yoghurt, so this stereotype bears no relation to reality.”

He says although no more than five councillors are Momentum members, several more are ‘generally aligned’ with the group’s principles and more are ‘shifting in that direction.’

“Now people are saying we can win elections on the left, and feel they can be more open with their leanings.

“There is a lot more opposition to the Elephant and Castle decision now than there would have been five years ago, as councillors feel more empowered to speak out.”

Last week a Labour spokesperson said it was the party’s policy not discuss whether or not allegations of bullying were received.

A CYCLIST was taken to hospital following an accident on London Bridge.

The bridge was partially closed for an hour after the incident involving a 40-year-old man at about 6.30pm on Friday, July 20.

A spokesperson for City of London Police said: “We were called at 6.31pm on Friday, July 20, to reports of an incident involving a 40-year-old male cyclist on London Bridge. We arrived at 6.38pm and London Ambulance Service was also on scene.

“Initially, reports suggested there had been another vehicle involved but we now know

only the cyclist was involved.

“The bridge was fully reopened by 7.20pm.”

The spokesperson added that City of London Police were no longer investigating the incident.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson added: “We were called at 6.28pm on Friday, July 20, to King William Street, EC4R to reports of a road traffic collision.

“We sent an incident response officer, two single responders in cars and an ambulance crew to the scene. We also dispatched London's Air Ambulance.“We treated a man at the scene and took him by road to hospital as a priority."

‘CONSISTENT WITH BEING STABBED’

DETECTIVES ARE trying to trace a van driver who asked paramedics to help an injured man in the back of his van – before driving off.

On Sunday, July 1, at around 12.45, paramedics dealing with a separate incident on Peckham Hill Street were stopped by a driver, who alerted them to a man in the back of his van who was

injured.

As the paramedics helped take him out and provided treatment to a large open leg wound, described as ‘consistent with being stabbed’, the van driver drove off without giving his details.

Police now want to trace him, and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The driver is described as being a white, slim man, around five-feetseven, with dark hair and facial stubble.

He is believed to be in his early 40s and has a London accent and scar on the left side of his face.

On the day, he was wearing a grey, zipped hooded sweater with a white Tshirt underneath.

The injured man has since been discharged from hospital.

SQUATTERS WHO set up camp in closed-down Rotherhithe police station were kicked out by the landlords – and moved onto an estate just a stone’s throw away.

The News reported last Monday, July 16, that people had moved into the station in Lower Road, which had stood empty since it closed its doors at the end of last year.

They were evicted just two days later by bailiffs acting on behalf of landlords British Land – but then settled in a car park at Courthope House just metres down the road.

Council officers visited the group at the estate on Friday to check on their welfare and referred them to their homelessness team.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council cabinet member for housing, said: “We are aware of the people who are currently living on the Courthope House car park and our

photograph the heron and coot in the water.

“I was photographing a heron and then this fox jumped into the frame and I couldn’t believe it,” said Kam. “When you look at the photo it looks like the heron and the fox are

plotting to get the poor coot.

“They were on the other side of the water at Canada Water near the Deal Porter sculpture.

“I think it’s good to see how the wildlife is still thriving and to enjoy living in Canada Water.”

Squatters hop from cop shop to estate next door

housing officers have spoken to them, and the local residents, to check on their welfare.

“Their situation has also been referred to our homelessness team who will arrange to visit them and see if any support can be offered.

“At the moment the group are telling staff they are due to be collected from the site shortly but we will continue to check on them and make sure they get any support they need.”

A resident who did not want to be identified told the News the last of the group left the estate on Monday morning.

British Land, which bought the police station to redevelop as part of its huge Canada Water Masterplan, is now looking into how it can stop the situation from happening again.

“On Wednesday morning [July 18] County Enforcement, acting on behalf of British Land, evicted a number of individuals who had been illegally occupying the former Rotherhithe Police Station on Lower Road,” said a British Land spokesperson.

“This eviction followed the due legal process and the building has now been

secured.

“Security measures to protect the site are already extensive, although we will be reviewing procedures to minimise the possibility of a reoccurrence in the future.”

The former Rotherhithe police station in Lower Road was closed down after 52 years as part of Metropolitan Police cuts, which also saw the front counters at Peckham and Southwark stations close to the public.

Walworth is now the only police station in the borough with a front counter open to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The team of police officers based at Rotherhithe now operate out of a purpose-built hub behind Seven Islands leisure centre on the same road.

The building in Lower Road was later bought by British Land to be redeveloped as part of its 53-acre Canada Water Masterplan.

British Land submitted outline plans for its huge development to the council in May, which includes up to 3,000 homes and a new high street, town centre and leisure centre.

POLICE HUNT CANADA WATER TRAIN ATTACKER

POLICE ARE hunting for a man after a passenger was violently assaulted during an attempted robbery on an Overground train.

The incident took place at 6.45am on Sunday, May 20, on board a London Overground service from Canada Water to New Cross Gate.

The victim, a 43-year-old man, was approached by a man at Canada Water station and asked if he could use his phone to make a call.

They both then boarded a train at Canada Water with the man taking a seat next to the victim, where he asked what was in his bag.

Feeling intimidated, the victim stood up in an attempt to move but was grabbed round the neck by the man, who then attempted to pull his bag from his shoulder.

Other passengers intervened and the man left the train at New Cross Gate station.

The victim received bruising and was severely shaken by the incident.

Officers would like to speak with the man shown in these CCTV images, as they believe he may have information which could help with the investigation.

A MAN dubbed the 'Rush Hour Prowler' after sexually assaulting a string of girls and women during their daily commutes – including an eleven-year-old on her way home from school in Herne Hill – has been jailed for six years.

Businessman Kevin Bond preyed on girls as young as eight in the attacks which mainly took place during the morning and evening rush hours and which spanned four boroughs, including Southwark, Greenwich, Bromley, and Lewisham, over the course of a year.

In Southwark, the 51 year old, from Chislehurst, targeted an eleven-year-old girl in Half Moon Lane, Herne Hill, at 5.20pm on September 18, 2017.

He also attacked a nineteen-year-old woman at 5.20pm on July 27, 2017, in Falmouth Road, Borough.

Bond, who has two grown up children and grandchildren, continued on to his job at London South Bank University after a number of his morning assaults in leafy, suburban streets – attacks which left his victims distressed and terrified after he accosted them on their way to and from school or work.

Prosecutors said there was a use of violence in the offences and a “degree of planning as they were committed at specific times of day”.

Bond was finally caught in January this year through forensics and after being identified from CCTV footage showing him fleeing the scene of one of his attacks.

He was originally arrested on suspicion of 26 attacks, but finally was charged and pleaded guilty to fourteen sexual assaults between October 2016 and November 2017.

The former nightclub owner’s first attack was committed on a girl aged thirteen in Orpington on October 6, 2016.

His youngest victim, aged eight, was attacked in Vulcan Terrace, Lewisham, while on her way to school between 8.20am and 8.50am on November 13, 2017.

He also sexually assaulted five different thirteen-year-old girls in Lewisham, Orpington, Blackheath and Lee. Bond attacked an eleven-year-old girl in Lee on September 28, 2017, during the

‘Rush Hour Prowler’ jailed for fourteen offences - including two in Southwark

morning rush hour, then a thirteen-yearold in Greenwich during the evening rush hour.

He also struck three times in just 25 minutes in Blackheath on October 5, 2017, groping a thirteen-year-old girl then attacking two women in their twenties.

Police believe it is possible there are further victims who have not yet come forward – and urge them to come get in contact.

Bond was sentenced to six years behind bars at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday, July 23.

Temporary Detective Superintendent Andrew Furphy, who led the investigation, said: “These offences have been utterly traumatic for the victims, all of whom have been young females going about their daily lives, to and from school and their workplaces when Bond appeared and attacked them in broad daylight.

“I would like to pay tribute to their bravery in assisting us with this longrunning investigation, as well as the public who provided us with information after the appeals were issued.

“I’d like to thank the Crown Prosecution Service for their commitment to building a robust and complex prosecution case and I’d like to thank my officers who worked tirelessly and relentlessly to apprehend Bond, a dangerous sexual predator.

“The streets of south London are a far safer place now he is locked up.”

London South Bank University, where Bond worked, said in a statement: “He was a non-teaching member of staff.

“All necessary checks were carried out at the time of his recruitment and we did not receive any complaints against him while he worked here.

TWO LONDON Bridge terror attack victims were among those recognised by the Queen for their bravery.

Kirsty Boden and Ignacio Echeverria, who were both killed during the tragic events last June, were included in this year’s Civilian Gallantry list.

Guy’s Hospital theatre recovery nurse Ms Boden, 28, from Australia, was stabbed in the chest after running towards danger to give first aid to victims of the attack.

She was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery for displaying “courage and compassion when, without concern for her own safety, she went to assist those who were injured”.

Spanish HSBC worker Mr Echeverria, 39, was killed while trying to fend off the terrorists with his skateboard.

He was posthumously awarded the George Medal as it is “without a doubt that his intervention allowed victims to escape, thus preventing further loss of life”.

Three police officers were also among the 20 people recognised for their “outstanding bravery” on this year’s list.

British Transport Police (BTP) officer Wayne Marques, who was stabbed several times while fighting off all three attackers armed only with his baton, was awarded the George Medal.

Peckham police officer Charlie Guenigault, who was off duty when he rushed to help PC Marques and was stabbed repeatedly, also received the George Medal.

BTP officer PC Leon McLeod received a Queen's Commendation for Bravery for running at the terrorists and then providing aid to victims following the attack.

Ellen Gauntlett and Justin Jones, who helped PC Guenigault and took him to hospital, were awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery.

terrorists drove a van into revellers and tourists on London Bridge on June 3, 2017, before going on a killing spree in Borough Market.

They were amongst a number of people recognised on this year’s list.

Roy Larner screamed "F*** you, I'm Millwall" and was stabbed eight times as jihadis armed with hunting knives tried to force their way inside the Borough Market pub he was drinking in on June 3 last year.

The 48 year old was dubbed “The Lion of London Bridge", and more than 23,000 people threw their support behind a petition to get him a George Cross.

But, while others have been honoured for the part they played that tragic night, the dad of one was dismayed to find he’d been missed off this year's Civilian Gallantry List.

“I think it’s wrong,” Roy, from Peckham, told the News. Having suffered some of the most severe injuries of those caught up in the attack, he added: “I probably came off the worst and probably saved more lives than those people on the list.

“I feel let down by the authorities and I’m officially homeless still.

“I didn’t do those things to get a medal but a thank you would’ve been nice.

“I’m not a perfect person but I did something good for once. I nearly lost my life because of it."

In a fall from grace after being hailed a national hero, a video

emerged of Roy shouting racist abuse at protesters in Elephant and Castle and appearing to spit at a black photographer in February 2017.

Then, a little over a month after his heroics, he launched into a racist outburst at Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle’s office in Jamaica Road.

He later admitted raciallyaggravated common assault and religiously-aggravated harassment and apologised for his actions, avoiding jail with a suspended sentence.

Roy, who had to have surgery after suffering stab wounds to his arms, hands and neck as well as a punctured lung during the attack, still suffers nightmares and flashbacks to that horrific night more than a year later.

The Cabinet Office said it could not comment on individual cases when asked whether Roy had been nominated for an award and why he did not receive one.

However, Millwall’s fan on the board Micky Simpson has enlisted the help of Labour’s Lord Kennedy of Southwark, who plans to write to the Prime Minister calling for Roy and three other Lion fans caught up in the attack to be recognised for their bravery.

Speaking to the News, Micky said: “They acted in pure bravery; if they were at war when they did what they did they would have got a medal for it but for whatever reason they haven’t been recognised and that’s a real travesty.”

A MOTHER from Walworth whose daughter was murdered has told the News how it felt to appear in a special Eastenders episode highlighting the human cost of knife crime.

Ten years after former Eastenders' actress Brooke Kinsella's brother was killed in an unprovoked attack, BBC bosses wrote one of the soap's most powerful storylines to date, which saw Shakil fatally stabbed by a gang.

Viewers saw his friend Keegan, who was also injured, struggle to cope in the aftermath of the attack when he was hellbent on revenge, and followed Shakil's devastated mother Carmel attempt suicide before becoming an anti-knife crime campaigner.

On July 6, BBC one aired a special post-watershed episode from 9.30-10pm,

featuring Shakil's funeral, where real bereaved families joined the cast and held up photographs of the loved ones they have lost to violent crime during Shakil's burial procession.

One of them was Jackie Summerford, (pictured far right) from the Aylesbury Estate, whose daughter Bonnie was 24 when she was last seen on September 18, 2007.

Derek Brown, from Rotherhithe, was convicted for Bonnie's murder, and for the murder of DVD seller Xiao Mei Guo - but he has never told police what he did with their bodies, and continues to refuse

to admit his guilt.

Jackie was also joined by Jean Foster, (pictured far left) whose son Chris was killed in 2013 after he was stabbed on Borough High Street.

Jackie told the News taking part in the special episode brought her mixed emotions: "All the cast, every one of them, made us welcome and really looked after us.

"But as me and a few others have said since, it has opened up wounds for us again. If we can take one knife off the street that is one knife less - and maybe one life saved."

Twenty-five-year-old Camberwell man is the latest victim of knife crime

A 25-YEAR-OLD man was stabbed in Camberwell’s John Ruskin Street on Sunday.

Police say they were called at around 6.40pm, and the man was taken by paramedics to a south London hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A London Ambulance Service

Spokesperson said: “We sent a single responder in a car and an ambulance crew to the scene.

"We also dispatched London's Air Ambulance.

“We treated a person and took them to a major trauma centre by road as a priority."

No arrests have been made.

Footage shared on social media appeared to show the air ambulance

landing in Kennington Park, amid claims of an incident near Aberfeldy House, on the Brandon Estate.

This is the latest in a series of broad daylight stabbings across the borough which - as the News reported last week - is London's knife crime epicentre.

Up-to-date figures from the Mayor of London’s Office for Policing and Crime show Southwark is the second highest in the capital for knife crime, with 805 incidents taking place in the last twelve months. Brent has the highest, with 814 incidents.

Last week, the News reported on seventeen-year-old Katrina Makunova (pictured below), who was stabbed to death in Camberwell, two stabbings that took place in one day in Peckham, and a family in East Dulwich held at knifepoint by armed robbers who ransacked their home while children slept upstairs.

And on Sunday a 25-year-old man was found with stab wounds in Camberwell after being knifed in broad daylight (see article bottom left).

The latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures show knife crime has risen by sixteen per cent in one year in England and Wales.

The number of offences involving a knife or sharp instrument recorded by police in the year to March 2018 jumped to 40,147.

There was also a twelve per cent rise in the number of homicides recorded by police, excluding the London and Manchester terror attacks, and a two per cent rise in police-recorded gun crime.

The number of robberies soared 30 per cent, the figures show.

Southwark Liberal Democrats were expected to push for the council to pay for the hire of extra police officers through the Mayor’s Met Patrol Plus scheme, which offers matched funding, during a full council meeting last night.

The opposition party has called for a dedicated violent crime unit to be set up under the authority of the Borough Commander to reduce and pro-actively tackle knife crime in the borough.

The council already currently funds a joint enforcement team through the Met Patrol Plus scheme which involves six police officers working alongside council enforcement officers with a particular

focus on the night-time economy.

Councillor Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety and public health, said the council was discussing police resources with the borough commander.

“We recognise the extremely worrying rise in knife crime in the borough and agree that there is more the council can do to support the police and tackle this issue,” she told the News.

“The council is already making use of the Met Patrol Plus scheme that allows us to pay for additional police resources from the Metropolitan Police Service with the support of the local borough commander.

“There are currently three schemes operating in the borough, two of which include the local authority working with partner organisations.

“There is also a scheme in development through a successful bid submitted to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government for a rough sleeping Initiative.”

“There are a number of local authorities and partner organisations including Tower Hamlets who are using the Met Patrol Plus scheme to fund additional uniformed officers,” she added.

“These schemes are still in their early days and the success of these arrangements is still to be determined.”

RESIDENTS WERE left gobsmacked after a council truck dumped a huge pile of rubbish on their estate in the middle of the night.

Video footage shows a white Mercedes-Benz tipper truck reversing onto the Cossall Estate, in Peckham, before upending reams of junk onto the ground at about 1.50am on Friday, July 20.

as what looked like garden furniture, a quad bike, DVDs and bags of rubbish were scattered across the floor.

Speaking to the News, the man, who did not want to be identified, said: “I heard this rattling noise coming along in the car park and it was this van coming in - and I know they don’t work at that time in the morning, so it started ringing alarm bells.

“I was so shocked because I have two kids and normally take them downstairs to play and it’s got all these things like

nails and screws on the floor and my little one is always falling over.

“That’s why I felt something had to be done about it because it’s not right and it’s not fair and where it was dumped was stopping people from coming out of their garages – there was no consideration at all.

“They looked around as if they were looking to see if anyone was watching, so I know for a fact they were up to something. I think they are selfish.”

Another resident on an estate in

Rotherhithe Street told the News this week that she was woken by the sound of crashing at about 2.30am that same day.

She believes a truck similar to the one in the video dumped a pile of rubbish outside her block of flats, but it is not clear whether the two incidents were connected.

“I popped my head out the window and saw them driving off towards Rotherhithe Tunnel,” she said.

“When you watch the video you can see there was still stuff on the back of that

vehicle as it drove off and I’m pretty sure that’s what was dumped here.

“There’s a bag of shoes, TV, old computer monitor and till rolls. There was wood and metal but someone has taken that.”

Councillor Richard Livingstone, Southwark Council cabinet member for environment, transport management and air quality, told the News the council had cleared up the mess on the Cossall Estate and was investigating the incident.

“We can confirm that this was a council vehicle, however it was not on council business at the time,” he said.

“This appears to be a serious abuse of council property and we are currently investigating as a matter of importance.

"We ensured that the waste was cleared from the estate this morning [Friday].”

A BERMONDSEY family was left traumatised after three men burst into their home while they were watching television and threatened to shoot them.

The family of six, including two children and elderly relatives, were at their home in Grange Road when the men stormed through the open patio doors armed with a machine gun, rifle and a machete.

They demanded money and access to the safe, but fled empty handed during the incident shortly after midnight on Saturday, June 9.

The family was not harmed during the incident, although the two children were said to have been left traumatised.

Police have not found a motive for the attempted aggravated burglary and are now appealing for the community to help.

FIFTY PEOPLE were evacuated from the Grove House pub on Sunday when a fire swept through the building's first and second floor.

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were dispatched to tackle the blaze on Camberwell Grove on Sunday, July 22, at 8.40pm.

Six people were also evacuated from a neighbouring property as a precaution, and fortunately no one was injured.

According to the brigade, the fire was brought under control by 2.11am, but part of the first and second floors were damaged, and the extraction system from

the first floor to the roof was also affected.

Station Manager Andy Walton said: “Crews are worked hard in challenging and humid conditions to bring the fire under control preventing lateral fire spread to neighbouring properties.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the pub - which is in Camberwell Grove's conservation area will be closed until further notice.

Woman dies after motorbike collision DETECTIVES ARE appealing for witnesses after a female pedestrian died following a collision with a motorbike in Borough.

The 45-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene in Great Dover Street after the collision at about 6.55pm on Monday, July 23.

The rider of the blue Suzuki motorbike, a 26-year-old man, was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or the moments leading up to it.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at approximately 6.55pm on Monday, July 23, to reports of a motorcycle in collision with a pedestrian on Great Dover Street, SE1.

“Officers, London’s Air Ambulance and the London Ambulance Service attended.

“Despite the efforts of the emergency services, the 45-year-old pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene at 7.46pm.

“Her next of kin have been informed.

“A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

“Detectives from the Roads and Transport Policing Command are investigating and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or the moments leading up to it.

“There have been no arrests and inquiries continue.”

POLICE HAVE released an image of a woman they would like to speak to after a paramedic car was damaged during World Cup celebrations in Borough High Street.

The woman can be seen standing on the roof of the London Ambulance Service vehicle surrounded by crowds in the image.

The windscreen and wing mirror of the car were smashed and the bonnet was dented after revellers climbed on top of it while celebrating England’s win over Sweden on Saturday, July 7.

Last week the News reported that detectives investigating the incident had already traced another woman to Scotland, who voluntarily attended a police station to be interviewed under caution on Monday, July 16.

They are now appealing for anyone who can identify the woman in the image (right) released yesterday to come forward.

Big-hearted Millwall fans have managed to raise more than £10,000 for London Ambulance Service to help with the repairs.

After seeing a picture of the damage, Millwall Supporters’ Club chair Kathryn Gale and vice chair Michael Avery set up an online fundraising page to help contribute £5,000 towards the repairs – but it smashed its target within 24 hours.

Michael told the News he felt “just general disappointment” at what happened on his club’s “patch” in Borough.

Despite the excitement of most children, a rise in temperature over summer brings with it a rise in childcare costs.

Government schemes like 30 free hours of childcare are restricted to term time only.

As a result, parents either have to use up all their holiday, or pay extra for holiday clubs or longer days with a childminder.

Cllr Victoria Mills, Southwark Council Cabinet Member for Finance, Performance and Brexit said: “Affordable, quality holiday childcare is a vital part of our infrastructure, both as a borough and as a country as a whole, but last year the Family and Childcare Trust found that the average cost of six weeks of holiday childcare per child was £748.

“Inner London parents already pay on average around £55 a week more for their childcare than parents in other parts of the country, with poorer parents being the hardest hit when it comes to higher prices over summer.

“If we want a thriving economy

we need to support working parents, so that holidays are a time to recharge batteries and have quality family time, not worry about how they are going to manage for the rest of the summer.”

For many parents, taking six weeks off work to look after their kids is simply not an option, and in London many of them don’t have other family members around the corner to help out.

For others, free school lunches ensured their children received the right nutrition, but with schools closed for summer, it adds another concern to their piling list.

The council has released a statement, acknowledging the parent’s worries and promising immediate help.

Cllr Mills added: “As a parent of two young children myself, I understand the stress and frustration that parents face, and as a council we are committed to helping to ease these pressures. That’s why we are exploring options to help parents spread the costs of childcare over a longer period through an affordable loan scheme.”

Apart from the government’s Childcare Choices scheme, Southwark residents will also be able to utilise a host of other activities, such as holiday playschemes, afterschool clubs and breakfast clubs.

A GRANDMA from Walworth was not expecting her new allotment to grow such a giant courgette…

Seventy-one-year-old Faye Bassell from Catesby Street recently took on her own allotment, and the novice gardener is already proving her green-fingered credentials.

She was stunned to find that a courgette she planted two months ago has grown so large it is almost half her size – and so heavy that her granddaughter Annarel Ulysses had to help her carry it inside.

Mrs Bassell has had seven children, 24 grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren and it looks like her bumper harvest could feed all of them.

She told the News how surprised she was by the monster crop. “It’s the second time I’ve planted and I have never accomplished a vegetable as big as this one before.

“I’m over the moon and still in shock it’s something I have grown myself.”

STUDENTS FROM three schools in Walworth traded produce they grew themselves – courgette flowers, broad beans, shallots and rainbow chard – at East Street Market.

The produce was all organic, travelled less than two miles to reach the market, and had been grown over the last term by students from St Peters CE Primary, St Paul’s CE Primary, and University Academy of Engineering South Bank.

The students’ market stall was among those of professional market traders, so the students were able to make connections, as well as raise money for more seeds, gardening tools, and cooking equipment.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for the children,” Rebecca Bagnall, a teacher at St Paul’s Primary School, said. “They surprised me with their marketing skills.”

Part of the Healthy Zones initiative, supported by Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity, the two-year programme aims to tackle childhood obesity from a more holistic approach.

Over 37 per cent of of ten and elevenyear-olds are either obese or overweight in London, and Healthy Zones teaches children where their food comes from, as

well as life-long skills, such as how to prepare healthy meals, setting them up for a good understanding of food and nutrition in their futures.

Security measures in the garden include columnar trees and rotating bars of pergola to prevent climbing.

Prickly plants and gravel have been utilised as a further deterrent.

Green screens have been used to provide a sustainable and secure privacy fence solution along the boundaries of the garden; it offers air cleansing benefits as well.

The unique exhibit was brought about for the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS)’s Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. It earned them a well-deserved silver medal.

For the competition, a brief to demonstrate a secure and sustainable urban garden was forwarded to the College’s Garden Design and Plantsmanship Foundation Degree

students and staff. Capel manor has a number of centres for those wanting to gain land based careers including a site in Crystal Palace.

Lucy Glover and Jaqueline Poll were declared joint winners of the event.

As part of the garden’s ethos of helping the community, the plants used will be relocated to two community groups and a primary school in a deprived area of London.

This year the College’s floristry business, Manor Flowers, exhibit also won a Silver-Gilt medal for their floral spider’s web design. The display was inspired by the intricate work of the spider and the woven elements of a spider’s web. The web is made of small wooden log slices and fresh floral material, and it also features a handmade spider.

Malcolm Goodwin, Principal at Capel Manor College, said “We encourage students to get involved from the initial idea phase to the creation of exhibitions as this realworld experience is invaluable for preparation to work or higher study.

“Creating exhibitions at the prestigious RHS Hampton Court Flower Show is another example of how our students are presented with fantastic opportunities to develop their skills.”

BANKSIDE WILL host the final stop for the third annual Jo Cox Way bike ride on Sunday, July 29, in memory of the murdered Labour MP.

The 282-mile journey, which started from Cox’s West Yorkshire constituency, spanned across five days and was attended, for the first time, by Cox’s sister, Kim Leadbeater.

Jo Cox was brutally murdered on 16 June 2016, by 52-year-old Thomas Alexander Mair, for her outspoken support towards the European Union and immigration.

The ride aims to raise the profile of the Jo Cox Foundation, a charity set up to advance the causes championed by Jo, and the More in Common movement.

It is also designed to highlight the resilience of communities that have been struck by acts of terror and raise awareness of groups across the country who work tirelessly to bring people together.

Kim Leadbeater said: “The bike ride is an opportunity to focus on the resilience of communities when horrific things happen such as Jo’s murder, the terror attack at London’s Borough Market and the tragedy at Grenfell Tower. These horrendous circumstances have a way of making people pull together to work for the common good.”

The Jo Cox Way starts from the late MP’s Batley & Spen constituency on Wednesday 25 July, when a group of amateur cyclists set off from Princess Mary Stadium in Cleckheaton. They will arrive at Bankside four days later, with overnight stops in Great Longstone, near Bakewell, Derbyshire,

ROAD CLOSURES THIS WEEKEND AS 100,000 TAKE PART IN RIDELONDON AS THE massive cycling fest returns to the capital for its sixth year, RideLondon will bring two days of road closures and over 100,000 cyclists to the city, writes Brooke Manning...

On Saturday, July 28 and Sunday, July 29, there will be road closures across the city, including Waterloo Bridge, for the eight-mile FreeCycle route for families on Saturday, as well as a series of charity rides on Sunday.

The UCI Women’s WorldTour Prudential RideLondon Classique and the Men’s UCI WorldTour Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic will take place on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

“Roads between Tower Bridge and Commercial Street will be busier than usual,” TfL warns on their website. “Your journey may take up to twice as long, especially between 16:00 and 20:00 on Saturday.”

On Saturday, roads are scheduled to be closed from 5am-7:30pm, and corresponding with the family-friendly FreeCycle route, there will be seven festival zones, with free entertainment such as giant Jenga, a unicycle stunt team, and a pedal-powered juice bar.

One of the festival zones will be located near the Southbank Centre, offering: Freestyle Stunt Show – a showcase of skill, balance and style on wheels, with shows throughout the day from 10:00–16:00 Puncture Kit – a drumming cyclist Rollapaluza races – race against family and friends on a static race bike On Sunday, roads will again be closed from 4am-8pm for amateurs cycling for charity in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100, 46 and 19 events.

The 100-mile route will feature the Peckham Cycle Club raising money for a Camberwell charity that fights criminal landlords.

TfL has advised that extra time is budgeted when travelling, especially by car, and that the Tube and Rail services are the most reliable method of transport over the weekend.

The routes can be found on the Prudential website, www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk Market Bosworth, Leicestershire, Banbury, Oxfordshire, and Uxbridge in Middlesex.

At Bankside, the cyclists will be greeted by members of community support groups, including those from Grenfell Tower and Borough Market.

Members of the public are invited to cheer on the cyclists at the start of each stage and there is an open invitation for anyone wishing to show their support to join the ride for part of a day as it passes through their region.

HE GOVERNMENT has spent two years rowing about Brexit since the referendum.

I am at a loss to understand what Theresa May is trying to achieve.

Or if she even believes in it. She wrote in 2016 that leaving the EU would damage our national security and economy. I think she was right then and that the evidence since supports the case: prices have already risen; secret Government advice is to stockpile food from next April; and I saw another local firm recently which is moving out of our area due to Brexit, costing 30 local jobs. This is all avoidable.

Ministers are squabbling with just three months to conclude Brexit negotiations, whilst ‘no deal’ becomes more likely, leaving flights unable to take off, holidays cancelled and all of us paying more for our shopping. I am seriously worried about where this Government is trying to take us and why they are squandering access to the largest, wealthiest and strongest trading bloc on the planet, especially at a time we have rising fascism, an unreliable and frankly bizarre US President and an aggressive Russian leader apparently behind chemical weapons use on UK soil.

I am also very concerned to see the latest crime statistics. Violent crime has risen under Theresa May as Home Secretary and Prime

Minister. It is unforgivable that the rise in knife and gun crime has not resulted in any rise in prosecutions, with nine out of ten offenders now getting away with it. The Tories used to claim to be the party of law and order. They’ve axed Southwark police by 400 officers and PCSOs since 2010, with Lib Dem help, and criminals now operate in broad daylight and get away with it. I’ll keep fighting for the officers, resources and powers our police need to do their job.

Self-care, help save NHS time and money

HE LONG days of summer are a blessing for sun-lovers but not so welcome if you suffer from hay fever.

There is some good news though. If you are one of the unlucky ones you no longer have to see your GP to get treatment. You can just pop along to the nearest pharmacy and buy medications like tablets, eye drops and nasal sprays without prescription, and often at a lower cost. Your pharmacist can also advise you on how to avoid hay fever triggers like staying indoors when the pollen count is high.

You only need to see a GP if: - you need treatment all year round - you’re pregnant or breastfeeding - you experience shortness of breath, tightness in your chest or

any wheezing - you’re referred by a pharmacist - the treatment the pharmacist gives you does not work.

The change was introduced by NHS Southwark CCG in January 2018 and more widely

by NHS England in March 2018, following consultations.

NHS England look at the best ways to save money and spend it wisely. In 2015/16 GPs issued 1.1 billion prescription items at a cost of £9.2 billion. A number of these were for items that don’t need a prescription and can be bought in places like pharmacies, supermarkets, petrol stations and corner shops cheaper than the price paid by the NHS. They include medications like painkillers and cough and cold remedies.

Schools are now enjoying summer holidays and, whilst it is a great time for many kids, it can be very difficult for some families financially, especially without free school meals. Even working parents cannot afford sky-high childcare costs. The fantastic Southwark Community Hub (pictured) is running workshops in the holidays for local kids, including visiting Parliament this week! hosting their activities. Southwark has actually seen a decrease in knife crime offences in last twelve months

I WRITE regarding last week’s front page, Is knife crime out of control in Southwark? (July 19, 2018).

Every life lost to knife crime is a tragedy for our city. I don’t shy away from the fact that knife crime is a problem and one that we must face. However, no one agency has the answers; indeed, no single borough can solve this issue alone.

Problems of knife crime are present in nearly every London borough and also further afield in other parts of the country. To proliferate the idea that Southwark is the epicentre of such crime is both incorrect and damaging.

It does a disservice to the many young people who are working to be a positive influence on their communities and working alongside the council to design and deliver our community services.

There is no quick fix to end knife crime and while there is a long way still to go, in Southwark we have a number of reasons to be proud of the work we have done to tackle this issue. Figures from the last twelve months, (June 2018) show that Southwark is one of only five London boroughs that saw a reduction, with a 11.6% decrease in knife crime offences compared to the previous year. I want to say to Southwark News readers that we are listening, we are acting and we are starting to see positive results.

I have met with families whose lives have been forever changed by knife crime and it is truly sobering to hear their stories. Beyond what we read in the news or see on television, knife crime is having a real impact on people’s lives across the capital. Rubbish ruining the green PEOPLE WHO live within walking distance of Goose Green in SE22 are extremely fortunate.

I enjoyed walking around it 286 times last year.

Most of the trees are nearly 200 years old.

What angers me is the rubbish that people drop on the grass. The worst offenders are the drinkers and the smokers, who leave bottles, cans and fag ends. Why don’t they put their rubbish in the bins?

How a hospital for children came to be built AS THE NHS celebrates 70 years of looking after the nation’s health, the News thought it would revisit a feature we’d once published on our local children’s hospital, Evelina London.

The hospital is close to the hearts of those at the News, and we, together with our readers helped raise £100k, for it after a campaign of money raising events.

The Evelina was founded in 1869

by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, of the famous Rothschild banking family.

Baron Rothschild was originally from Vienna but went to Cambridge University together with Edward, then Prince of Wales, and settled in London.

The Baron and his wife Evelina were soon expecting their first child after they got married in 1865, but in 1866 the Baroness went into premature labour after she was involved in a railway accident.

Dr Arthur Farre, her Physician Obstetrician, was rushed to help her, but nothing could be done. The child was stillborn, and Evelina died soon after.

Baron Ferdinand founded the Evelina Hospital for Sick Children in their memory.

Recording the opening of the hospital in June 1869, the Lancet described how “no expense has been spared to make this a model hospital”.

“The hospital consists of four storeys: two of these are devoted to the reception of patients, the groundfloor being for the accommodation of the house-surgeon, matron, and certain ladies who have undertaken the management of the nursing,” it said.

“On the attic storey are sleeping rooms for the nurses and servants, and a quarantine ward for doubtful cases.

“There are separate kitchens for Jews and Christians.

“Along the length of the building runs a single very handsome ward, 100 foot by 24 foot, and fourteen foot high.

“In the ward are four fireplaces, so that it can at any time be divided into four smaller rooms, if this be deemed advisable.

“At the other extremity is a playroom, and beyond this two large and cheerful rooms, one of which will be for cases of whooping-cough and its complications - a novel feature in children's hospitals, - and the other probably for infants under a year old.”

The Evelina was designed to provide Southwark with the most upto-date child care facilities – indeed they were among the best in the country.

Guy's was the first hospital in London to adopt Lister's antiseptic methods, introduced by Dr H. G. Howse when he was appointed Assistant Surgeon in 1870, and the groundbreaking practice was

introduced at the Evelina when he joined its staff in the following year.

And the facilities was sorely needed: it was located in the heart of one of the most deprived areas in London.

In the early years of the Evelina, the battle was on to combat the fatal diseases that reflected the appalling living conditions of the area.

As a bronze plaque placed at the corner between Southwark Bridge Road and Quilp Street to commemorate the orginal site of the Evelina states: “The chosen site,

Southsea Court in Southwark, was one of the poorest districts of London, where children were stricken with disease, serious infections and undernourishment leading to many deaths.

“This new model hospital uplifted the spirits of the people bringing to a deprived district the hope of fighting the ravages of childhood disease.”

Whooping cough, brain, nerve and lung disorders (particularly convulsions, pneumonia and bronchitis) and tuberculosis, were all rife in the dirty, crowded living

quarters near the hospital.

Young children were most vulnerable. In the year 1876-77, the total number of deaths in the parish was 1,206, of which more than half were of children under the age of five.

Despite the availability of only 30 beds during the initial period, more than 300 children were admitted in the first year.

By 1890, the number of beds and the rate of admission had both doubled. In that year, of 675 admissions, 158 died. By the end of the century, however, the number of

annual admissions had reached more than 1000 and the death rate was falling. The Evelina continued to treat sick children from Southwark, Lambeth and the surrounding area for the next 107 years. In 1976, it moved to Guy’s Tower, to unite with Guy’s Hospital children’s department.

The old Evelina building was demolished and the area was converted into Mint Street car park.

In 2005, the hospital moved into its current premises, a stunning new purpose-built hospital at St Thomas’, to start the next chapter of its life.

The effect of the orders would be to formalise the below measures in AMELIA STREET:- (a) to extend to 6 metres in length, each bay, and to relocate two existing ‘limited stay’ disabled persons parking places on the south-east side, south-westward for a distance of 1 metre; These parking places would operate at any time and may be used for up to 4 hours maximum, no return within 2 hours, by vehicles displaying a valid disabled persons 'blue badge'. (b) to reduce in length an existing pay parking place on the south-east side, so as to accommodate the relocation of the two disabled persons parking places referred to above; (c) to provide a new inset loading bay, 10.4 metres in length, on the northwest side outside Nos. 2-16 Amelia Street in which vehicles may load or unload at any time (max 40 mins, no return within 2 hours); and (d) to amend the existing length of double yellow line waiting restrictions, from the south-west kerb-line of Walworth Road, i) on the south-east side so as to accommodate the relocation of the new disabled persons parking places referred to above, and ii) to accommodate the provision of the new loading bay referred to above.

FISHER BOSS Dean Harrison feels staying up will qualify as a success this season – as he urged local people to “come and watch games” and “spend some money at the club”.

Harrison is working on a budget of £300 per week as Fisher aim to consolidate back in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division after promotion last season.

Harrison guided the team’s return to the ninth tier of English football after relegation in 2016-17 despite not being able to compete with rival clubs for transfer targets.

Harrison was asked what his budget

was after last week’s 1-1 draw with Millwall under-18s.

“Three hundred a week, the same we had last year, exactly the same,” Harrison told Kentish Football.

“It’s not a lot of money. It’s tough.

What we try to do here is create a good environment, create a good dressing room. The coaching is good and we just try to get the boys to enjoy it and enjoy their football.

“Whereas you get a lot of boys who go to other clubs with money where they purely play for the money not particularly enjoying their football, happy to take the money every week.

That’s when teams can come unstuck sometimes against us.

Lionesses overhaul as new recruits make instant impact MILLWALL LIONESSES have continued their rebuilding under new boss Chris Phillips and director of football Pedro Martinez Losa by making a number of development and first-team signings.

The duo are spearheading a new era for the club after taking over this summer.

The Lionesses have also retained experience, with Leanne Cowan extending her fourteen-year stay for at least another campaign.

Lucy Fitzgerald makes the step-up to the senior side. She was part of the Lionesses under-16 squad that won their league and reached the FA Youth Cup final last season. She also recently made her England under-18 debut.

Beth Powell, Beth Harford, Michelle Young and Freya Bailes all join Phillips’ squad from the development ranks.

The Lionesses have also snapped up Grace Taylor from London Bees for her second spell with the club. Chloe Sansom, an England under-20 goalkeeper, has signed a deal from Brighton, while striker Evie Clarke has joined from the Bees.

Ravenscroft and Lia Cataldo from the Gunners.

Other new additions include Yelina Priest from Arsenal (dual signed with Chelsea), Annie Rossiter (development) and Chloe Wilkinson (Brentwood).

The new recruits are already making an impact. Last weekend, Clarke put the Lionesses in front in their friendly against Enfield. Fitzgerald made it 2-1 after their opponents had equalised, before Young and Bailes sealed a 4-1 win.

running the club are doing their level best to keep it afloat and do what they can but it really needs help.”

Harrison will again have to be thrify.

He gave a trial to Luis Velay-Vivel against the young Lions, and the goalkeeper impressed after playing the second half.

“He looks like a decent keeper, he’s new to us,” Harrison said. “He came over from Spain recently, so he’s working. We’re getting international clearance now so hopefully it’s here before the start of the season.”

Fisher kick off their Premier League season at Hollands and Blair on August 4, before their first league game at St Paul’s against Coydon on Tuesday August 7.

SURREY INCREASED their lead at the top of the County Championship to 42 points after they beat their nearest neighbours Nottinghamshire by an innings and 183 runs.

This was Surrey’s best team performance of the season, and with six games to go they should be favourites to win this year’s Championship.

The home team struggled for runs in both innings, and were bowled out for 210 and 193 in the second in reply to Surrey’s 592. Once again Rory Burns led the way with 153, which should boost his chances of an England call-up.

Previous England incumbent Mark Stoneman notched a season’s best 86, and leading all-rounder Ricky Clarke got 111. The man of the match was Morne Morkel with match figures of 10-120.

ALTHOUGH the majority of people in the South East have hardly witnessed any rain in the last six weeks, a brief deluge denied Surrey maximum points in their recent T20 Blast game against Kent, despite hitting the third-highest total in the competition’s history.

Surrey recorded a mammoth 2506, with Aaron Finch (83), Rory Burns (56) and Ollie Pope (34) the main contributors. It was a total that saw the team register the top run rate in the division.

Surrey did not bowl a ball as the Kent innings was washed out.

Meanwhile, Surrey entertain Somerset this Thursday.

New Southwark Rugby boss building new culture

THERE’S NO doubt that a lack of consistency – on average conceding of 24 points per game – and a drop off in fitness in the last quarter of games contributed towards Southwark RFC’s middle-of-the-road finish last season.

But, on the plus side, new head coach of the Shepherd Neame Kent 1 side, Joe Brace, knows exactly where to focus his attention.

It is several weeks into the new training regime and the squad look like they’re embracing every minute. Brace has provided a plan the players have bought into: Monday’s session focuses on speed and stamina at the athletics track, while Wednesday’s focus is on game training with dedicated fitness

routines taking place before tactical training.

The idea behind the new format in the programme is, according to Brace, to “replicate what happens during the game”. He added: “By having the players execute the moves when they’re already tired, they’re going to be better prepared during a match.”

The focus on fitness and consistency is a way to stave off the final ten-minute fatigue problem the team faced last season.

Going forward, the plan is simple rugby, a solid fitness base, a more rugged up-front approach, and a whole team dynamic. It’s a departure from the quick attacking backs approach of previous seasons.

Brace said: “The goal is to have the team operate as a tight defensive unit with solid set-pieces, allowing for better control anywhere on the

field.”

It’s not just an overhaul in the training that Brace is bringing.

There’s also, in the words of blindside flanker, Jack Bullen, “clarity and vision”. This outlook may be just what the team needs, because not only are they trying to increase fitness and stop conceding points, Brace is also trying to help the club form an identity and introduce a rugby culture which some players have said has been missing.

It’s only a matter of weeks before the new season starts, and there’s no better test of a new training regime than going up against the old one.

In a twist of fate, the first fixture sees Southwark RFC go up against old coach Dominic Palacio and his new squad, Cranbrook RFC. Don’t miss what’s sure to be an explosive start to the season.

BEN AMOS admitted he had other options this summer – but once Millwall’s name appeared as a potential destination it was a “straightforward decision”.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Amos joined the Lions earlier this month on a one-year loan deal from Bolton, and was whisked straight off to Portugal to join his new team-mates at their weeklong training camp.

He knew Ryan Tunnicliffe as they were with the Red Devils together, and linked up again with Lee Turner, Millwall’s new goalkeeping coach who he worked with last season at Charlton.

This is Amos’ eighth loan of his career, so meeting more than 30 new teammates and staff members on the Algarve didn’t faze him.

“It was a great week for me to integrate with the boys. There was a lot of spare

time so it was ideal,” Amos told the News this week.

“Ryan has shown me the ropes a little bit and I’m getting to know people more day by day.

“It’s always nice to have familiar faces but it’s not the be-all and end-all. I’ve moved clubs before and met a lot of new faces. I see it as a positive getting to know new people and players and building new relationships.

“Lee brought me on a lot when I worked with him in the past. There are a lot of little things that make up a good goalkeeping coach. He’s got a good base in all of them.

“He’s got unbelievable service, in terms of striking the ball. Sometimes you don’t get the similarities between the coach and the players when you go into training with them.

“Lee strikes a ball so well so that’s important in preparation.

“I heard some murmurs about a potential move here a week or two before it happened but these things can bubble along and then all of a sudden it’s go. A couple of days before, my agent

Cooper retains full focus

JAKE COOPER put rumours about his future to one side as he scored and assisted in Millwall’s 2-0 win at Cambridge United on Saturday.

Lee Gregory was denied by an excellent double-save from exLions stopper David Forde before the break, but it was the home side that looked the more threatening for an hour.

Millwall have stood firm in the face of bids up to £3million for Cooper from Glasgow Rangers, and a while after the final whistle Lions boss Neil Harris was deep in conversation with his player for at

least a quarter of an hour.

Hand gestures towards the pitch indicated Harris was discussing his performance, but a suspicious mind could have read more into it.

Cooper had set up the first when he headed Shaun Williams’ corner onto a post and Tom Elliott nodded in the rebound.

Cooper scored the second when he headed Aiden O’Brien’s cross past Forde.

“I watch a lot of football so I’ve seen Millwall play quite a few times and gauge the style from that. They are hard to beat, they’re notorious for being a tough team to play against, not pleasant for opponents.”

If it was a straightforward decision to join Millwall, his summer before the move was anything but straightforward.

Bolton’s players went on strike before a scheduled friendly against St Mirren over unpaid bonuses and two players’ unpaid June wages.

Anderson then went public and it was Amos that took the hit, as the Trotters chairman revealed the reason the goalkeeper’s wages – more than £1million per year – hadn’t been paid was because his representatives were in

talks with a club – Millwall – over a proposed loan move.

Amos disputes some of what Anderson said, though didn’t want to revisit the episode in detail when asked about it by the News.

Amos said: “It’s all sorted now so I don’t want to talk too much about it. I’m happy there was a solution and hopefully the Bolton boys can crack on and focus on what they need to do as well.

“It wasn’t nice to read that and some of it wasn’t true. But that’s in the past and I’m here now.

“I know the stature of this club and what it’s about and I know the area as well, so that helps.”

Amos has made 171 senior club appearances, including seven for Manchester United, where he was helped by legendary stopper Edwin van der Sar, who played in the Premier League and Champions League until he was 40.

“Van der Saar was a big influence,” Amos said. “Being around him and training with him every day was fantastic. Mentally he would give advice

because he’d been there and done it.

“If you look after yourself and get fortunate with injuries you can play for a long time. All I can do is take care of myself and see where I get to.”

Amos is determined to battle Jordan Archer for the number-one jersey, and sees the competition among the netminders, which also includes Dave Martin, as a good thing.

“The manager here watched me in the past so I think he knows what I’m about.

He basically said do your stuff every day in training and enjoy it.

“Of course my aim is to be in the team and that’s down to me to prove I’m worthy of it. Hopefully I can do that.

“That competition is really good. It definitely helps to keep the standards high when you’ve got three ‘keepers that are at it hard every day. It can only be good for all of us.

“I want to play at as high a level of football as I possibly can. While I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Charlton and made some friends for life, I want to maximise my potential in my career.

Harris gave goalkeeper Ben Amos his debut, while Fred Onyedinma had the chance to put his case forward to start the opening game of the season as he partnered Steve Morison up front.

Onyedinma sent a header over from a corner as Colchester went two up within half an hour.

“You’re going to have elements of the six weeks of pre-season you’re not happy with,” Harris continued. “Ninety

eight per cent of pre-season I’ve been happy with, the boys have attacked it and been brilliant. But that first half was unacceptable.

“I politely reminded the players at halftime what is expected. The second half was slightly better.

“In pre-season you might have a bad training session, a bad spell during a game, lose players to injury. It was collective team errors and I have to look at why, is it combinations, players I’ve picked?

“Certainly some players out there won’t be appearing in my team at the start of the season.”

“Hurry up,” Lions boss Neil Harris roared at his players. “Get the f**k in – now.”

Results aren’t important in pre-season but getting into the right habits is and Millwall were awful in the first half on Tuesday night, going into the dressing 20 down after Colchester goals from Sammie Szmodics and Kane VincentYoung.

Harris had possibly intended to make changes at half-time, but instead sent the same eleven back out for the second half to redeem themselves. It didn’t get much better, though substitute Jed Wallace did fire home a late peach of a consolation.

Reckless Championship spending ‘detrimental’ to Millwall

STEVE MORISON blasted the current transfer market as a “shambles” – saying it’s affecting Millwall’s chances of making signings.

It has been a frustrating summer so far for Millwall, with just Murray Wallace and Ben Amos added to the squad ahead of the 2018-19 season.

Millwall lost out to Norwich City over what would have been the club-record signing of Ben Marshall, who was offered a much larger financial package by the Canaries.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest signed Joao Carvalho for more than £13million; Stoke bought Oghenekaro Etebo and James McLean for over £11million combined and have a £10million deal in place for Benik Afobe in January; and Sheffield United smashed their club record by paying Brentford £5million for centre-back John Egan.

That’s just a small snapshot of what Millwall are competing against, and it’s generally agreed the major summer deals have yet to be done given the World Cup has made it a slower transfer window.

Millwall’s opening-day opponents, Middlesbrough, spent £8million on Aden Flint, a 29-year-old centre-back who has never played above Championship level.

As well as the huge sums involved in summer transfers, Aston Villa, to take one example, have players such as Micah Richards and Ross McCormack on more than £60,000 per week and who are not in their club’s plans.

Morison questions why some players seem content not being involved every week, and he also emphasised that Millwall’s values mean they would never be as financially reckless.

“The market is a shambles,” Morison told the News this week. “Aden Flint is a very good player at this level and he will help Middlesbrough.

“But when I left here for [Premier League] Norwich [in 2011] I left for £2.7million and now players are moving around this league for five to ten million.

There’s a reason why they’re in this league and not gone to the next level and it’s because this is as good as they’re going to get. People are still willing to pay the money.

“You look at some of the squads, there are players who don’t play week-in, weekout but are on huge, huge wages and have been bought for a lot of money. Where is the drive? Where is the will to succeed?

When you get bought and you’re on that much money it has to come from within.

“It’s detrimental to us because we can’t compete, but I don’t think we want to compete on those levels. The way this club works, the fans, I just don’t think it would work very well having people on 20, 30 thousand pounds a week.

“That’s not what this club stands for. It’s not what the girls in the office stand for, it’sMillwall not whatdefeated the catering staff stand for, it’s Birmingham 2-1 notat what people stand for. “We’re going to do it our way, we’re going to do it the manager’s way and the chairman’s way. One thing you do know when you do it this way, especially from the fans’ point of view, is that everyone is going to roll their sleeves up and work very, very hard. No one here is comfortable and settled, happy to be where they are. They are always striving.

That’s the way it has to be for us.”

The large swell of money swishing around the division compared to Millwall’s budget means the Lions are being tipped by the bookies to be in a

relegation fight.

“The harsh reality is we are a bottomthree team in terms of wage bill, so that’s why you’re down there,” Morison continued. “It’s based on who has the most money and who pays the most money.

For those reasons that’s why we’re there.

“At the moment apart from the goalkeeper and Murray we’re going in with the same squad and we’ll try to emulate what we did last year, which was to overachieve. We shouldn’t have done what we did but we did because we’re good players and a good team.

“If we get a couple more faces in before the start of the season it should stand us in good stead. One thing that we’re going to do is continue within our structures, within our financial structures. People will come in that will buy into what we’re doing.”

Morison is set to lead the club out on the first day of the season against Boro, his fourth full campaign in his current spell.

He will be 35 in August, but has played an average of over 50 games a season for the last three seasons.

And, despite his veteran status in his eighteenth season as a professional, he has no intention of giving up the jersey just yet.

“People try to write you off, but it’s only two months since the last season and nothing has changed,” he said.

“If I’m asked to play 50 games this season then no problem. I’m not setting a target that I want to play 30 games. I want to play week-in, week-out. I’m the captain of this football team and hopefully I get to lead the team out more often than not.

“It’s been a good pre-season, we’ve

worked hard but it’s been enjoyable as well. We had a great week away in Portugal and it’s crazy to think the season is less than two weeks away.

“It was nice to be somewhere different. I would say we normally go away to get a bit of sun on our backs but we’re getting that here anyway.

area to be in. Rather than being in your room you could go for a walk and have a coffee.

“It was very relaxed. There was a lot of trust in the boys that they weren’t going to do stuff they shouldn’t do.

“Everyone enjoyed it and the hard work continues. We’re working hard, getting the minutes in and aiming to be ready for the first game of the season.”

NEIL HARRIS doesn’t treat testimonials like a lot of clubs and this will be a proper friendly that should give a strong indication of what he sees is his first-choice side.

There will be little sentiment when he sits down to choose the eleven to face Middlesbrough on August 4, but there should be plenty of it around The Den this weekend.

Jimmy Abdou joined Millwall ten years ago from Plymouth before departing this summer for FC Martiques, his hometown club in France.

He was a manager’s and team-mate’s

dream, selflessly covering ground and giving the ball to more creative players.

He didn’t score often – just nine times in 342 appearances – but if fans didn’t already love him for his work ethic and humility he went a long way to achieving legendary status when his goal in the second leg of the 2009 League One play-off semi-final at Elland Road against Leeds took his side into the final.

Kenny Jackett’s Lions lost to Scunthorpe at Wembley, but were back a year later with Abdou in midfield in a 1-0 win over Swindon to achieve promotion to the Championship.

Abdou was one of the constants – along with David Forde – over the next turbulent five seasons that culminated

with the club in a shambles and relegated back to the third tier.

Neil Harris had taken over from the sacked Ian Holloway a couple of months before with little hope of saving them. Instead, he focused on rebuilding, and one of his first acts was to offer Abdou, then 31, a new deal.

Abdou played in his third play-off final a year later in a loss to Barnsley, before losing his place the following season.

But towards the end of the campaign, when Millwall were faltering and needing a calm presence, Abdou was recalled, playing the last game of the season, then the two semi-final legs, and the 1-0 win over Bradford in the final.

That turned out to be his last ever competitive game for the Lions, a fitting finale.

He spent last season on loan at AFC Wimbledon and will be back at The Den to play one final time this weekend.

A truly humble man about whom you won’t hear a bad word said, Abdou deserves a strong turnout on Saturday.

STEVE MORISON admits Millwall “need some fresh faces through the door” – with Millwall set to confirm a new attacking signing before Jimmy Abdou’s testimonial this Saturday.

While Millwall had added just two players to their squad before this week, other club have been “ripping up trees”

as they attempt to make an impact in the Championship this season.

Six clubs also have new managers, with Neil Harris the longest-serving boss in the division.

Harris has a settled squad – eight of the likely starting XI against Middlesbrough on the opening day featured in his first season in charge in 2015-16 – though there is expected to be more than one new recruit before the end of the transfer window on August 31.

“Hopefully we can steal a march on teams because some clubs are ripping up trees and laying seeds for the future, but it takes time. Hopefully we’re already there,” Morison said.

“We’re building slowly and adding bits of quality here and there. When we get those moments in games, rather than needing three chances, in a tight away game that player might take his first chance.

“Hopefully we’re in a better place

because we’re settled and we’re going in with a game plan that everyone knows.

“These other teams are bringing in a lot of players, so we’re hoping to get a jump on them and get some points on the board earlier.”

Morison added: “We need some fresh faces through the door, we need people to come in and freshen up the dressing room. A new striker coming in would be great.

“It would add to the list of players the manager could choose from and it would make our bench stronger.

Sometimes you turn around to the bench and you want to know you could bring on any of the seven rather than just a couple.

“The key thing is that anyone who comes in has to make the team stronger.

It can’t be a case of just coming in and using it as a stepping stone. The lads in the dressing room who have come in over the last couple of years have all added something and made us stronger.”

Millwall have been linked with Barnsley striker Tom Bradshaw and Brighton winger Jiri Skalak.

NEIL HARRIS has revealed Jimmy Abdou will start his testimonial against Bochum this weekend – and urged fans to turn out to pay tribute to the Lions legend.

Millwall face the second-tier German side with Abdou set to receive a send-off after a decade’s service in south London.

It is Millwall’s last first-team pre-season friendly, after Tuesday night’s 2-1 defeat at Colchester United.

Harris hopes fans come along to

“appreciate” popular midfielder Abdou, who joined FC Martiques this summer.

“Jimmy will start the game, he will play the first five minutes,” Harris said.

“He knows how we play. I have got no concerns with that and he will be fit, as we know.

“It’s all about Jimmy and the fans getting to see him.

I hope a lot come along to support him because he deserves it. Jimmy has moved back to France, we

are not going to see him again at our ground in the near future, so it’s a chance for people to come and see him, to appreciate him.

“Jimmy is a friend of mine. Having had this game myself I know what it’s like to come off the pitch and thank the fans.”

Harris added: “It is also an opportunity to come and see a very, very good German

side as well. They are a very fast, physical, technical German side that I have seen personally and have really been good to watch.

“I think it will be a cracking game, a real tough test for us and it will be a good day.

I certainly expect to see a better performance than Tuesday night.

“It’s also a workout for the players.”

Millwall face Middlesbrough in their season opener a week on Saturday.

“A huge part of me is thinking about Jimmy, but the rest of me is thinking about the fact that it’s our preparation for Middlesbrough,” Harris continued.

“Middlesbrough is going to be one of the toughest games of the season and we have got them up first. We have to prepare correctly.

“My team will resemble a lot nearer to what it will look like against Boro. I wouldn’t have thought it will be the starting XI, but it will be very close. It’s an opportunity for my players to stake their claim to be in my team against Boro.

“They all appreciate Jimmy and will appreciate that the day is about him as an individual, but every individual on that pitch will be thinking about forcing their way into my plans.”
