Should knife crime be a health issue?

K

nife crime should be treated as a health issue, and not just one of law enforcement, experts in the field heard at an anti-knife crime summit this week.

It was claimed that last year there was no fatal youth knife crime in Scotland, down to the fact that authorities for 20 years had been treating violent crime as a health issue.

A youth worker said: “There are three things you can do to a disease. Quarantine it, treat it, or leave it to fester. These kids have been left to fester.

“We have done enough of marching, lighting candles and making statements – sentimental things aren’t helping.”

We think everyone can agree that enough grief has been experienced on this issue.

Dr Duncan Bew, consultant and surgeon head of trauma at King’s College Hospital, said that around 30 to 40 per cent of trauma injuries they saw were caused by knives. That’s a huge number.

So taking a different approach to the issue, rather than treating it as a problem to be addressed solely by the police, seems to be the way forward.

But if this is the approach to be adopted, how do we do it?

Giant beasts just one of the designs to create new landmark in London Bridge

GIANT GIRAFFES, a chainmail theatre curtain and a steel ‘folly’ are just some of the designs put forward to transform an area outside London Bridge station.

The London Festival of Architecture and Team London Bridge have revealed the teams and designs shortlisted in a competition to improve wayfinding and the public realm in Tooley Street outside the recentlyrevamped station.

Spanish practice M2R arquitectos wants to make Tooley Street as memorable as possible with two enormous giraffe-shaped sculptures.

The idea is for the area to become an instantly-recognisable landmark and a place for people to understand where they are or to meet up with friends and colleagues.

CAN and Eddie Blake have proposed a chainmail theatre curtain on top of a lightweight steel structure, painted in the style of riverside mooring posts. The drawing of the curtains and a painted floor guide people towards the less polluted and congested riverside path.

The design includes an LED clock and scrolling sign which cast welcoming messages through the chainmail to people exiting the Underground.

Charles Holland Architects’ proposal, You Are Here, is like a page of the London A-Z come to life.

It has two parts: a scale map of the area printed onto the pavement, complete with street names and major landmarks, and a giant signpost, or beacon, that has local directions and information on it. make:good has proposed a steel frame folly - an ornamental building which people can walk under or stop around as a way of directing people,

as well as providing an opportunity to grow plants up the structure to improve air quality.

The upper structure is a cut steel sheet or mesh, containing depictions of the area’s landmarks which were designed with local people and organisations.

When S’il Te Plait Group arrived in London six months ago from France, they soon got lost at London Bridge.

Their proposal, Way More London,

helps lost tourists or commuters with a series of bright signage pointing to destinations and landmarks.

And finally, White Red Architects has put forward a design for a structure that uses mirrors and reflections to help people understand where they are in relation to London Bridge’s nearby landmarks.

The idea is that the use of pictures and mirrors makes it easy for people to find their way without needing to

The competition will be judged by a panel including Jonas Lencer, director of de Rijke Marsh Morgan Architects, Jack Skillen, placeshaping director at Team London Bridge, Tamsie Thomso, director of London Festival of Architecture, and Matthew Hill, head of highways at Southwark Council.

The winning team will be announced in July to develop a fully costed, feasible design that can be installed subject to planning consent.

The total project budget is £23,000 + VAT.

ON THE ‘WORLD CUP ESTATE’

BERMONDSEY’S WORLD Cup estate erupted into cheers of joy as England emerged victorious after a tense penalty shoot-out against Colombia on Tuesday night.

The world’s media gathered at the Kirby Estate, off Southwark Park Road, on Tuesday as England and Colombian fans stood shoulder to shoulder watching the match on a giant screen.

The News joined residents on the estate, which went viral last month after it was covered in 300 England flags for the World Cup. Geraldine Howard, 52, Alan Putman, 48, and Chris Dowse, 39, whose idea it was to fly the flags, admitted they were a “little overwhelmed” by the reaction, which even resulted in a video call with players in the England squad.

Miracle baby is lucky mascot

A ROTHERHITHE mum who lost two pregnancies to a rare condition says her “miracle” baby is the nation’s lucky mascot, as every time he wears England’s football kit they win.

Sophie Rutherwood tragically lost two sons at 22 weeks and 24 weeks to fetal hydrops – a serious condition which causes abnormal accumulation of fluid in two or more fetal compartments.

The 29 year old was later diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called ipex syndrome, which caused the fetal hydrops and means her likelihood of having a healthy baby boy is slim and that if she gives birth to a daughter, they will inherit the same condition.

But on April 16 this year Sophie defied the odds and gave birth to little Ethan – whom she says is England’s lucky mascot as the football team has never lost while he has been wearing their full kit.

Speaking to the News after England’s win against Colombia on Tuesday, Sophie said: “Ethan was born and suddenly England are doing well.

“The first time he didn’t wear his full England kit they lost against Belgium, but every other time he has worn his full kit they’ve won.

“I haven’t got any nails left, my partner John and I were both on the edge of our seats watching because England always lose to penalties.”

After losing Fraser and Kye, Sophie and her fiancé John Corcoran, 34, never imagined they would have a healthy baby boy one day. “To have two previous babies with this genetic condition, we never thought we would have a boy, we thought we would have girls who carry the same genetic condition as me,” said Sophie.

“My first child, my son Fraser, was just a normal pregnancy; everything was fine and then I went up to the hospital and

that’s when they found the fluid.

“They told me it was slapped cheek and that it would never happen again, so we tried again and then my second baby, Kye, had the same condition.

“Because they had never come across a case like mine and having fluid accumulate in such a short space of time they just assumed it was slapped cheek, but it wasn’t.

“After my second son I found out I have ipex syndrome, a genetic condition, and I really had to push for that answer. It’s really rare and not many people have it.”

Luckily Ethan, who is now eleven weeks old, was born happy and healthy in April this year.

“I was nervous up until 22 weeks because that’s when the fluid began to show on both other babies and once I was past that milestone I began to get more at ease, but I don’t think it’s ever out of your head until the baby is here,” said Sophie.

“They can do a blood test at twelve weeks in my pregnancy and find out if my baby has this condition.

“Ethan is our miracle – and England is now another miracle.”

T A recent anti-knife crime summit in Southwark, youth workers, heath professionals and police concluded that violent crime should be treated as a health issue, not just an enforcement one.

One youth worker told the conference: “There are three things you can do to a disease. Quarantine it, treat it, or leave it to fester. These kids have been left to fester.”

This new approach has proven to be successful in Scotland, where last year it is believed there was no fatal knife crime amongst youths.

Elena Noel, co-chair of Southwark’s Anti Knife Crime Forum (pictured in green scarf) , first came to the borough twenty years ago as part of a home office pilot scheme, when knife and gun crime had escalated.

“I have been working with serious violence for about 20 years in different ways,” she told the News, before the Knife Crime Summit, held at Bells Gardens Community Centre in Peckham on Wednesday, June 20.

“I am ex co-chair of Southwark safer neighbourhood board and I have helped nineteen projects in Southwark get funding from the Mayor, and created many young leaders.

“Really there is a lot agreement to understand the problem of knife crime and why it is happening - but this event is about finding solutions.”

Speakers at the summit included youth workers, Southwark police, ex-cops who volunteer in the community and specialists from King’s College Hospital including Redthread, a charity helping victims of violence turn away from violent crime.

A key theme was how Southwark could replicate Scotland’s success – last year, speakers at the summit claimed that there was no fatal youth knife crime, widely credited to a 20-year strategy which treated violent crime as a health issue, not just an enforcement one.

And Ms Noel is in no doubt that Southwark’s problem has escalated, saying the forum started planning the event in late March, as the latest upsurge began to hit headlines.

“Communities across London are saying there is too much discussion and not enough problem solving.

“Many mothers are saying ‘we are terrified for our children’s lives’.

“Youths are angry. They are not seeing changes– and they are not seeing too many people who make those changes coming to their estates.

“They want routes out of crime, they want employment and training, but do not have the bonds and the structure in their lives they need.

“A lot of young people on the street have also lost friends. They are victims as well as perpetrators - putting up a bravado.”

She says systemic deprivation, illiteracy, and high exclusion rates in the borough have all played a role in serious youth violence – but that there is also a ‘culture of dependency’, where not enough young people are trained up properly to navigate a world of applications, budgets and form-filling for receiving funding.

“What young people want are quality opportunities,” she argues, admitting apprenticeships and other training schemes struggle to compete with the cash a drug dealer can pocket.

“I am concerned about the numbers going up, we have an epidemic of knife crime we have to look at how we are going to reduce that.

“Too many people are losing their lives on the street – it has never been this high.”

Sentimental things aren’t helping

Youth worker Alika (pictured above second left) grew up on the Walworth Road after moving to the UK from Lagos, in Nigeria, aged eleven.

He described finding out his friend had been stabbed to death, and the moment a youth worker told him: “Get used to it”.

“How is it that this place is so much richer than Nigeria, but you are telling me to get used to it?” he pondered, baffled.

He believes there can be ‘too much intellectualisation’ and not enough basic intervention from people living near troubled young people – many of whom are battling mental health problems and what is known as ‘adverse experiences’ in childhood.

Alika told the audience about his own struggles with mental health, and the times he was hell-bent on retaliation - but found his way back.

Today he is one of many people backing a ‘public health’ based approach to tackling violent crime.

Rather than believing law enforcement can fix the problem of knife and gun crime in the capital, advocates for the public health approach see violence as like a contagious disease, which spreads as it comes into contact with people.

He said he was stunned to hear that Scotland had achieved such success – but their approach made sense.

Dad who lost his son says lack of funding is taking lives

Paul Barnes’ son Quamari died last year when he was stabbed three times at 3.24pm, on January 23.

Both his son and his killer were just fifteen. His attacker received a fourteen year sentence. Paul believes if more support had been given to his son’s killer, Quamari could still be alive.

“His mother had reached out to the authorities for help as she saw that there were problems - but the money was not there.

“Funding is a big part of why some of these youths are doing this.

“They become latchkey kids - hanging about on estates.”

Hospital says one third of injuries are from knives

According to Dr Duncan Bew, consultant and surgeon head of trauma at King’s College Hospital (pictured above far left) on Denmark Hill, around 30-40% of trauma injuries they see are caused by knives.

The total number of knife injuries has increased by a third in just a year – and gunshot injuries are up by a staggering 75%.

But Dr Bew believes the way we talk about violent crime as ‘gun crime’ and ‘knife crime’, masks a more complex picture where everyday objects like hammers and screwdrivers are weaponised, and many injuries are inflicted due to mental health problems.

His colleagues George Parnavelas and Rivka Benjamin (pictured above centre) spoke about their work at the charity Redthread, which began life at King’s to help young people aged eleven to 23 receiving treatment for injuries as a result of serious violence.

George explained: “We simply ask the question: ‘what can we do to help you right now?’”

He described the moment they are still hospitalised as a ‘moment of vulnerability’, and ‘their lowest ebb’, when they are most likely to be responsive to intervention.

Their help could be just making a phone call, or helping with paperwork, but it could also start them on a journey away from gang culture.

A key challenge, they said, is to stop professionals ‘victim blaming’, and challenge the assumption that people who commit violent crime aren’t also victims.

According to the charity, two thirds of gang members have been a victim of crime themselves, with one in three suffering a violent crime, and 15 per cent have been shot or stabbed.

New law will ban zombie knives, knuckle dusters and death stars

The forum coincided with home secretary Savid Javid announcing a new offensive weapons bill.

The legislation will make it more difficult for young people to buy knives and acid online as sellers will be made to use rigorous age identification – or face prosecution.

And a raft of weapons will also be completely banned – including zombie knives (blades up to two feet long, often with serrated edges), knuckle dusters, and death stars (circular bladed weapons).

A PEACE event has been organised to mark the tenth anniversary of the death of David Idowu who was fatally stabbed in Southwark aged just fourteen.

The Walworth Academy student had been playing football in Tabard Gardens, SE1, on June 17, 2008, when he was attacked without warning and stabbed in the heart.

He died almost three weeks later in hospital on July 7, 2008.

David’s mother, Grace Idowu, set up The David Idowu Foundation in his name, which works to reduce knife crime by educating young people and adults.

A peace event, organised by Mrs Idowu and Southwark Young Advisors, will be held at Tabard Gardens on Saturday, July 7, from 12pm to 6pm in memory of David and all young people

who have lost their lives to violent crime.

It will include live music, singing, poetry and performers, as well as to face painting, a bouncy castle, football, and food and drink.

POLICE HAVE revealed details of the final moments leading up to the fatal stabbing of Joshua Boadu in Bermondsey – including details of his potential attackers and the car they are believed to have used.

Detectives visited the scene where 23year-old Joshua, known affectionately as SJ, was stabbed outside Helen Taylor House in Linsey Street on Monday to renew their appeal for information three weeks after the attack.

Joshua, an apprentice engineer, was stabbed in broad daylight following an altercation with a group of males in Linsey Street at about 6.21pm on June 11, and sought refuge at an address in nearby Lucey Way. He was put on life support at King’s College Hospital, where his family kept a vigil at his bedside for eleven days, but he sadly passed away after his heart stopped beating in the early hours of June 22.

Ian Titterrell, who is leading the murder investigation, said: "We believe that the people who attacked Joshua used a dark blue SUV or 4x4-type vehicle.

"It has been suggested that there were four black men, one of a lighter complexion, about 20 years of age.

"It is believed that the car hit a bollard and that a person saw them having trouble with their car and spoke to them.

"We would urge that person to come forward and tell us what they saw."

DI Titterrell said CCTV footage showed Joshua cycling through Lucey Way towards Linsey Street and back again in the moments before the attack, which was not caught on camera.

"There is footage of Joshua coming across the green area on a bike and then going back," he said.

"Joshua cycled across initially from Lucey Way towards Linsey Street and then when he cycled back he had a white carrier bag."

Detectives returned to the scene on Monday to speak to anyone who might have information about what happened to Joshua, as they continue to try to establish a motive.

"It's three weeks since the actual stabbing took place, so the hope is that we can connect people's patterns - if someone is around today that same person may have been around three weeks ago," said DI Titterrell.

"It's to capture these people who potentially would have been in that area at the time of the attack and also to revisit the properties that overlook the scene, because we know that not everyone has been spoken to.

A post-mortem examination, which took place at Greenwich mortuary on Tuesday, June 26, gave the preliminary cause of death as a stab wound to the chest.

DEVELOPER DELANCEY'S plans to demolish Elephant and Castle shopping centre and build a new town centre were green-lighted

by Southwark Council's planning committee last night by a surprise four-to-three margin.

The decision means the condemned shopping centre will close by March 2019 before demolition, followed by years of redevelopment which will bring housing, retail and leisure space including three multi-storey tower blocks.

The scheme will see 979 new homes, a new site for the London College of Communication, and town centre mixed with retail and leisure facilities.

Sources had told the News in the run up to the meeting they felt there was a good chance the scheme would be rejected again, but on the night councillors followed the council’s planning officer’s recommendations with a vote of four in favour, three against, and one abstention.

The close decision came five months after the decision was put on hold at a planning committee meeting in January when councillors narrowly voted against the plans, but decided to defer the final decision until after May’s local elections, while concessions were made in the wake of widespread objections.

Since then Delancey has secured £11 million of taxpayers' funding from the Greater London Authority to increase the number of homes at social rent from 74 to 116 – but it has also reduced the housing offered at London Living Rent while increasing the proportion at ‘Discount Market Rent’ in order to make the scheme ‘financially viable’.

traders, despite a general consensus from councillors that the area needs to be regenerated.

From 5.30pm onwards protestors had gathered outside the Tooley Street Offices with many waving 'social housing not social cleansing' placards.

As the meeting got underway an hour later, committee members were encouraged to balance the benefits of the scheme against its drawbacks - including the impact on ethnic minority communities – with officers advising a ‘yes’ vote.

Councillors pushed Delancey’s investment director Stafford Lancaster on whether it could stump up more of its own funding and plough profits back into the scheme.

Mr Lancaster could not summon up the exact figure needed to make the scheme fully compliant with the council's own affordable housing policy – but he and planning officers said it would take ‘tens of millions’ and that Delancey was already ‘at breaking point’ with its projected profit margins.

The 35% campaign's Jerry Flynn, Emad Megahed from the Elephant and Castle Traders' Association and Latin Elephant's Patria Roman, put forward their objections, arguing that the centre's traders had not agreed to the final terms offered, and by being dispersed across different future locations the centre's community was threatened.

Councillors voted in favour with four approving, three rejecting and one abstention, with those in favour swung by Delancey’s new concessions – with the caveat that key details on how the rental scheme would be managed, and support given to traders, still needed to be ironed out.

Protestors were quick to express their dismay. The 35% campaign's Jerry Flynn told the News: "We are bitterly disappointed that Southwark has approved an application where nearly half of the affordable housing will be at 80% market rent.

"The local community forced Delancey to increase the number of social rented homes to 116. Southwark Council could have got us 44 more, by forcing Delancey to use the Mayor’s grant of £11m on housing, but instead it allowed Delancey to keep the money as profit.

"Delancey admitted they are only paying £26,000 towards extra social rented housing. It is disgraceful.”

His thoughts were echoed by Tanya Murat, chair of Southwark Defend Council Housing, who described the news as “a shameful episode in this council’s history”, and a “grave injustice on the people of this community and mainly migrant and ethnic traders”. A spokesperson from the Up the Elephant campaigners said the group was “saddened but not disheartened”, and they will “continue to build momentum

Ward councillors Rebecca Lury, Darren Merrill, Martin Seaton, Karl Eastham, Helen Dennis, Sirajul Islam, Jack Buck and Paul Fleming reacted to the decision with an open letter, saying: “We were unconvinced by the evidence submitted to the meeting today, which has not satisfied our concerns around the levels of social housing delivered, the fate of the Latin American businesses and community organisations at the centre, or that is satisfies our public sector equalities

They called on Sadiq Khan to pressure Delancey to deliver a better deal, and address “significant moral and policy failings, saying they find “little comfort in the use of public money to rectify the colossal failings of a massive private developer.”

In a statement published on Wednesday morning, Delancey described its proposals as ‘a once in a lifetime opportunity’.

“We know that the task we face going forward in delivering this project, in an inclusive and positive manner, is huge,” Mr Lancaster said.

“We want to ensure all parties that we take our responsibility extremely seriously and know our reputation in Elephant and Castle will need to be hardearned in the long-run.

“We remain open to debate and embrace the next stages with great optimism about what can be achieved for all.”

A START-UP company has set its sights on opening a new 'urban winery' in Peckham to can homegrown Pinot Noir.

Trendy drinks company The Uncommon have produced the UK's first English-grown wine in a can, retailing for £5 per 250 ml serving, and now wants to set up a 'state of the art canning line' in south east London complete with cans, kegs and wine on tap for punters to enjoy.

The Uncommon says its sparkling dry white wine hand-harvested twenty miles

away in Surrey, and contains less sugar than Champagne or prosecco, and is made without pesticides and chemicals.

Founders Henry Connell and Alex Thraves say they want to invest in producing organic and natural English wines and to become the most sustainable wine brand in the country.

They say canned wine can help reduce wine wastage from half used bottles of fizz going flat, and that recyclable aluminium has less of a carbon footprint than glass.

Henry said he was inspired to quit his job in real estate finance to pursue his dream of setting up a wine company after seeing the success of canned wine

in America.

He said; “I used to live in New York and in America canned wine is readily available, as an idea was germinating, England was beating Champagne in global sparkling wine competitions so I wanted to marry the two together with the aim of shaking up the wine category in the UK whilst raising the profile of our home-grown produce.

A CREDIT union in Peckham will launch its financial support for the armed forces on Saturday to coincide with this year’s Armed Forces Day.

The new ‘Forces Finance initiative’ from the London Mutual Credit Union, based on Peckham’s Heaton Road, will give serving members of the armed forces and their families access to a range of specially developed financial services for squaddies, who can struggle to access finance and end up being targeted by payday loans companies.

Lucky Chandrasekera, chief executive of London Mutual Credit Union, says: “Our figures show the clear demand for financial services built around the specific needs of armed forces personnel and their families.

“The disruptive and often highly mobile nature of life in the services can make financial planning difficult for many service personnel, as well as making it harder to build an address history or a strong credit record.

“The launch of the Forces Finance service is designed to build on our experience of working with armed services personnel over the past three years and underscores our commitment to delivering a bank built around 'serving

those who serve'”.

Joan Driscoll, a senior manager based in Peckham, said: “People in the armed forces often find it difficult to find decent, affordable loans.

“When they’re serving, their accommodation is paid for, and they might not have developed the financial savviness they need.

“Our credit union is a way that they can be helped to save for the future – and when they return to civilian life.”

She described the ultimate cost of high interest-rates slapped on doorstep and payday loans as ‘staggering’.

Customers can end up paying several times the value of the item they are trying to buy due to extortionate APR, or annual percentage rate.

In a drive to encourage more people to save across the borough, the credit union has also teamed up with some of Southwark’s biggest employers to allow workers to save from their payroll.

Southwark Council, King’s College and Guy’s and St Thomas’ staff, among others, are signed up to the scheme where a monthly amount is taken and put aside for savings from workers’ gross pay.

Anyone can join the credit union – you just need to live or work in Southwark, Lambeth, Westminster or Camden, and Ms Driscoll says they are always looking for more companies in the borough to join the payroll scheme.

MOMENTUM’S BRANCH in Southwark has denied it is plotting to oust long-serving Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman after its convenor described her constituency as ‘no longer a Canute-like hold-out’.

In How the left won Harriet Harman’s constituency, published on Clarion Magazine online, Southwark Momentum Convenor Chris Bright shared the news that that at Camberwell and Peckham’s Labour Party AGM on June 21, out of fifteen constituency officers’ positions, twelve were won by Corbyn-supporting candidates.

He went on to say ‘the tide of change in the Labour Party is continuing and Camberwell & Peckham is no longer a Canute-like hold-out.’

Mr Bright’s comments have been perceived by commentators that Harman could face deselection in the next general election.

Speaking to the News today, he denied that his words were meant to be inflammatory and downplayed the idea of division within the party.

He said that although there had been some tension in the past, there is now ‘a broad consensus’, about the move to the left, especially given that eight of the candidates elected for positions stood unopposed.

“A lot of London Labour parties had loyalists to Tony Blair and his legacy, and people felt a bit threatened and were pushing back,” he admitted.

“New councillors are in line with how things could be, and a lot of existing councillors are coming on board.

“I think it’s fair to say there is a sea change in the council too.”

He says membership in Camberwell and Peckham has surged from 500 to 3,000 in the last three years, and Momentum wants to capitalise on their energy with more emphasis on grass-roots campaigning on local issues and industrial action, with social media playing a key role in amplifying their voice.

Internally, he said the party was striving to be more open, with members more involved in decision making.

Southwark Momentum will be targeting Green supporters with renewed campaigns focused on regeneration and low pay – and industrial action.

“There are numerous plans for the Old Kent Road, and we want to make sure that regeneration is in the interests of the people who live here,” he told the News.

“Low pay is a huge issue in London – as is precarious employment.

“Our message is don’t just vote Labour – join Labour’.

Harriet Harman was approached for comment by the News but did not respond.

The first of two one-hour instalments of Celebrities on the NHS Frontline was be aired on BBC One last Thursday, with the second part due to aired tonight at 9pm.

The documentary, filmed to celebrate 70 years of the NHS, features four well-known faces who spend time shadowing different teams across the hospital.

Reporter Stacey Dooley, medical journalist Michael Mosley, Paralympic gold medallist Jonnie Peacock and ex-politician Ann Widdecombe learn first-hand about the challenges faced by NHS staff at King’s, and explore what drives them to work as hard as they do to.

At King’s, Ann gets to work alongside nurses in urgent care and with the clinical site managers, looking at how beds are managed across the hospital.

As a child Stacey Dooley spent a lot of time in and out hospital because of a heart murmur.

At King’s she gets a chance to work in the heart attack centre – the first in the country to treat heart attacks while they’re taking place.

Stacey looks at the health of the nation and the effect it has on NHS services, and also works with health care assistants in King’s worldrenowned liver unit. She aims to discover the ethical dilemma faced by staff as they make life and death decisions.

At the age of five Jonnie Peacock had meningitis and lost his lower right leg as a result.

He had almost a dozen operations but has no idea what goes on in theatre.

Working alongside theatre support workers at King’s means he’s able to find out.

He also works with some of the most vulnerable patients in the hospital – those in the children’s wards – and the play specialists who work hard to improve a child’s time in hospital.

Cardiac physiologist Chloe Battle, who features in the documentary alongside Stacey Dooley, said: “It was really exciting to be involved in the programme and showcase the amazing work we’re doing at King’s.

“It was great to be able to work with Stacey, showing her the ropes and explaining what my role is as well as letting her see first-hand the lifesaving work that goes on in the cardiac catheter labs.”

A BERMONDSEY-BASED nurse has been convicted of heading up a criminal network that subjected vulnerable Nigerian women to 'voodoo' rituals before trafficking them to Europe.

RESIDENTS HAVE handed a 330signature petition to the developer behind a 53-acre redevelopment of Canada Water voicing their concerns.

Members of the Canada Water West Residents’ Action Group presented the petition to British Land and Southwark Council at a community council meeting.

It sets out their concerns about the

masterplan, which would deliver up to 3,000 homes, including the height of some towers, density, the impact on existing transport links and infrastructure, and a proposed leisure centre.

An outline planning application with detailed plans of the first three plots expected to be built was submitted to the council in May after four years of consultation, but residents say a clear and detailed plan should be provided for all parts of the site.

Speaking to the News, Catherine Whitaker, chair of the residents’ group, said: “The first thing to say is that we are

NCA operations manager Kay Mellor said: “Josephine Iyamu is a calculating individual who used her apparent status as a rich, powerful and influential lady to intimidate and manipulate vulnerable Nigerian women.

“With zero regard for their safety and wellbeing, she sent them via dangerous routes to Germany and forced them to work in brothels to fund her own lifestyle.

“To her, these women were not human beings seeking a better life. They were merely a commodity which she could exploit to generate income for herself.

“I commend the bravery of the five women who came forward and recounted the abuse they suffered.

Thanks to them, Iyamu will no longer pose a threat to others.

“Borders are not a barrier and working with our German and Nigerian colleagues, the prosecution was able to bring the strongest possible case to court and ensured she faced justice in the UK for her crimes.”

Mario Lahn, lead investigator from the Polizei in Trier, Germany, said: "It’s hard to describe how these women had to suffer on their trip to Germany.

“In every meeting with them it became apparent what anguishes they had to get

through and all of them are still suffering.

"The excellent and uncomplicated cooperation between the criminal investigation department in Trier, the Federal Criminal Agency, the NCA, the police in Nigeria and Europol led to the court case of Josephine Iyamu and her

not opposed to redevelopment or regeneration of the area – it makes total sense that what was developed as an out of town shopping centre with excellent transport connections should be developed.

“I think the feeling is very much that the way the development is being put forward is that it’s going to be very dense and high-rise which is going to totally change the area.

“It’s about building height and all of these commuters coming in on transport, and infrastructure.

“There are a lot of issues around transport and how the system will be able to cope when Canada Water Tube station gets shut quite frequently already.

“I think one of the things about the masterplan is that it’s a 45-acre site but they are only bringing forward detailed plans for three plots so anything around what’s to come in the future is not in detail, only in outline.”

The petition signed by residents calls for new buildings to be limited to the height of Ontario Point – which they say is currently the tallest building in the

area at about 87 metres.

They also say they were never consulted on the possibility of keeping the current Seven Islands leisure centre in Lower Road – only on the location of a new centre – and are concerned about what the site will be redeveloped into.

A spokesperson for British Land said in response: “Overall the project has been well received with high levels of support at the consultation events we have held.

“The masterplan will create a new town centre for the area, with new workspace, retail, leisure, and public spaces alongside new homes, education and health provision set in a network of streets and spaces linking into the surrounding community and green spaces.

“The first detailed building will provide 35 per cent affordable homes, 70 per cent of which will be social rent at Southwark rent levels.

“We appreciate that some local concerns have been raised during the course of our discussions, and we have responded by repositioning and

condemnation.”

Josephine Iyamu, 51, formerly of Bermondsey, denied trafficking five women from Nigeria to Germany and exploiting them for prostitution. But she was convicted of modern slavery offences and perverting the course of justice by a jury last Thursday, following a ten-week trial at Birmingham Crown Court.

Her conviction is the first successful prosecution of a British national for offences committed overseas under the Modern Slavery Act. Her husband was found not guilty of perverting the course of justice.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) began investigating Iyamu in July 2017 after the German Polizei identified one of her victims and recovered evidence pointing to her being the ringleader of a network trafficking vulnerable women.

NCA officers tracked down Iyamu, known to her victims as Madam Sandra, to a small flat in Bermondsey where she was working as a nurse.

Despite the couple’s moderate income, the NCA says Iyamu frequently travelled to Europe and spent long periods of time in Nigeria, where she owned a large

house in Benin City.

The court heard that Iyamu oversaw the recruitment of vulnerable women, arranging their travel from rural towns in Nigeria to Germany, promising them a better life in Europe.

In exchange for facilitating the travel, Iyamu charged the victims between 30,000 and 38,000 euros.

Once in Germany they would be met by one of her associates, who placed them in brothels and made them work as prostitutes in order to repay the debt.

According to the NCA she enlisted the help of a voodoo priest to put them through a ‘Juju’ ceremony – a ritual designed to exert control over the women.

There they were forced to drink blood containing worms, eat chicken hearts, have their skin cut with razor blades and made to take an oath not to try to escape or tell the police and to repay the debt.

Five of Iyamu’s victims gave evidence via video link from Germany during her trial and detailed the horrendous conditions they endured while travelling over land across Africa, and then by boat to Italy, with sexual assault, rape, kidnap and death commonplace along the route.

Witnesses from Nigeria also gave evidence – one in person and others by video link.

by NCA officers after they landed at Heathrow airport on a flight from Lagos on August 24, 2017. Her husband was however later found not guilty of perverting the course of justice.

Maudsley protesters: ‘We’ve never had so many on our side’ Southwark News, Thursday July 5 2018

A CAMPAIGNER who organised a demonstration outside Maudsley Hospital for a 24-hour “place of sanctuary” for mental health patients said he had “never had so many people on his side”.

Since the emergency clinic at the psychiatric hospital in Camberwell was closed in 2007, patients have been directed to King’s College Hospital accident and emergency department nearby.

But campaigners say the busy A&E can feel like an “awful place to be” for patients suffering a mental health crisis – and that they want to see a separate 24-hour walkin centre opened, especially for children, young people, pregnant women, and women with babies.

Speaking outside Maudsley Hospital, Tom White, health spokesperson for Southwark Pensioners’ Action Group (SPAG), which organised the demonstration, said: “Today is the proudest I’ve felt in a long time.

“I’ve been doing this for seventeen years and we’ve never, ever had so many people on our side saying this is the right thing to do and this includes a lot of the staff.

“The one thing these people care about is people and this is why we do it.”

“I’m really indebted for the support that the MPs are showing us,” added the 76 year old, who lives in East Dulwich.

As well as members of SPAG, there were also representatives from Lambeth and Southwark Unite Community branch and campaigning organisation Keep Our NHS Public at the event on June 21.

Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, said she was “very grateful” for SPAG’s work in campaigning for better mental health services in south London.

“Mental health must receive parity of esteem with physical health, but currently falls far short of this,” she said.

“I support SPAG’s proposal for better access to support for people in mental health crisis, particularly children and young people and new mothers.

“Parity of esteem can only be achieved through increased funding, and I am calling on the government to make additional funding available to SLaM to ensure that everyone who needs mental health care and treatment can access it without delay.”

Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, added: “I have spent my life involved in mental health; my mum has schizophrenia and this had a dramatic impact on her and my whole family.

“Seeing her not get the help and support she needed for her illness was one of the main driving factors behind my decade

“And even for those who can access care, some bad old signs are re-emerging.

“Less choice and control over services for people with mental health conditions and their families as well as a rise in coerced treatment. This simply should not be happening.”

King’s College Hospital falls in Harriet Harman’s constituency. The News contacted her for comment but did not get a response.

A spokesperson for South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust previously told the News that considering a separate emergency department for psychiatric patients at Maudsley Hospital would be a “considerable step backwards for the parity of esteem for our patients”.

“Many patients with mental health problems attending A&E also have significant physical health conditions that require urgent assessment and treatment, which are best addressed within an A&E,” said the spokesperson.

“A significant number of these patients also require mental health assessment and treatment. This is particularly true of our elderly population who may present with either delirium or dementia.

“The Trust has dedicated psychiatric liaison teams working within local A&E departments who work with other clinicians to provide an integrated service that addresses people’s whole health needs.

“The Trust is aware of the significant demand that there currently is within KCH and other local emergency departments to meet demand and ensure that patients are kept safe and their needs are met.”

DEVELOPERS OF the Elephant & Castle shopping centre are providing free chess sets and lessons to local children.

The charity Chess in Schools and Communities (CSC) will be coming to five schools in Elephant and Castle, starting this September, thanks to funding from the real estate and advisory firm Delancey.

CSC will offer free chess lessons and after-school clubs to the five schools, and the charity will gift every child in the programme a chess set.

The sponsorship will also fund a chess club in a Southwark library. Around this time next year, there will also be a massive chess tournament, and every student who is part of the chess programme will be able to attend.

Man arrested for arson after fire in blocks of flats

CSC is a charity in the UK that aims to improve education and overcome social exclusion by introducing children to the game of chess.

“There is a growing field of scientific research into the benefits of chess as an educational intervention,” stated Malcolm Pein, the CEO of Chess in Schools and Communities.

“Chess teaches cognitive and social skills that can be applied in later life, such as logical thinking, problem solving and taking responsibility for one's actions."

“We have worked closely with CSC over the last five years, supporting their programmes in the boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Newham,” Jamie Ritblat, the founder and CEO of Delancey, commented.

“We are delighted that we are now able to extend this work to those living in Elephant and Castle.”

A MAN was arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire at a block of flats.

THE FIRST ever Deli Comedy Festival is coming to Burgess Park's Theatre Deli for the month of July, and residents of the Aylesbury Estate will be able to book tickets for only £5.

Not only are the tickets affordably priced, but the festival’s line-up also includes big names, such as Romesh Ranganathan (pictured), Marcus Brigstocke, and Joel Dommett.

Theatre Deli worked in collaboration with the Creation Trust, a charity that ensures the residents of the Aylesbury receive the benefits of the regeneration of the area.

“At our monthly comedy nights, we offer £4 tickets to residents in postcodes SE5, SE15 and SE17, which sell successfully, showing that there is interest in the local community, which is great,” said Malachy Luckie, the intern at Theatre Deli who organised the month-long festival.

“However, with the Deli Comedy Festival, we wanted to target the Aylesbury Estate specifically, as the locals who come to the comedy nights are often not residents of the estate.”

The festival will also feature emerging comedians from underrepresented backgrounds alongside the big names, providing a good platform to hear the voices of the up-andcoming.

SOUTHWARK’S FREE annual Bermondsey Carnival welcomed the biggest crowd it’s ever hosted, with 15,000 grabbing a picnic basket, digging out some sun lotion and heading on down to Southwark Park, to swing and boogie the night away, on Saturday.

This year’s party returned with another great line up of music, in partnership with Bermondsey Beat, Plaza Latina, Kinetika Bloco and The Movement Factory.

The Carnival’s headliners were Salute to Sinatra, a tribute to Ole Blue Eyes himself, featuring all of his classic songs, as crooned by singer Louis Hoover. An Abba Girls Tribute performed all the Swedish band’s hits; Tiny Tina and Kindred Soul joined a host of other performers, including Southwark’s own Kinetica Bloco, to entertain the crowds.

Neuro navigators transform lives

PEOPLE WITH neurological problems like brain injury and stroke are being helped to avoid lengthy stays in hospital and specialist rehabilitation centres thanks to an innovative team of therapists from Guy’s and St Thomas’.

In 2017, the South East London Neuro Navigation Service helped around 360 patients move smoothly through the different levels of care.

This saved an estimated 4,800 bed days across several hospital and specialist rehabilitation centres in the south east.

Savings are achieved as neuro navigators, who are specially trained therapists from the Trust, work closely with ward staff, specialist centres and social care providers to get patients the right rehabilitation service at the right time. The team care for patients living in Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley and Bromley.

PJ Watson, 26, suffered a brain injury following a car accident near Southampton in May 2016. PJ, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was in a coma for six weeks and spent time in intensive care at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

After transferring to Lewisham Hospital, PJ was supported by the neuro navigators from Guy’s and St Thomas’ to obtain the neurorehabilitation services he needed.

PJ’s mother, Cherie Jordan, says: “When PJ got home he wasn’t keen to

go back to another rehabilitation centre but Majella Brennan, the neuro navigator from Guy’s and St Thomas’, persevered with him.

“She wanted him to be more independent – able to move between his bed and the chair on his own, to practise getting about in and out of his wheelchair and able to get himself washed and dressed.

“PJ still can’t walk very well but he has come a long way.”

PJ Watson says of Majella, who arranged for him to get 10 weeks of rehabilitation at the Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre: “She’s really good. I wouldn’t change her for anything.”

Volunteers celebrate 250 years of service with tea

Heather Campbell, head of neurorehabilitation service at Guy’s and St Thomas’, says: “If a patient is referred early enough, we can ensure that their needs are being met by the right service at the right time.

“A lot of what we do is working behind the scenes so patients get the right care. We’re the link between the specialist services for example, the ward staff, discharge team and carer.

It’s about providing the right advice to families and advocating on the patient’s behalf. For some patients being encouraged to carry out daily grooming tasks or getting in and out of a wheelchair on their own can have a huge impact on their lives.”

44 of the volunteers received long service awards on Thursday 14 June for their work across all areas of the hospitals and at community sites.

Bernadette Burdge, 84, is one of the longest serving volunteers, having racked up 31 years at the Trust. She says: “I first came to St Thomas’ in my 20s. It does everything for me and so I decided to volunteer. I would give them every waking moment if I could.

“In the early days I was a volunteer on the wards helping nurses to make the beds, then I moved to the Chaplaincy. If someone had bad news they knew I was really listening to them because I know how it feels. Now I’m on the information stand helping patients get to their appointments.

“I’ve gotten to know so many people, porters, doctors and nurses over the years. They are lovely people. I do this out of love for my hospital. It’s my way of saying ‘Thank you St Thomas’ for all you’ve done for me.’”

Volunteers carry out a range of tasks including welcoming and directing the public, providing administrative support and carrying out social activities like Evelina London’s hospital radio station, Radio Lollipop and supporting the Trust’s cinema for patients, MediCinema.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ currently has 670 volunteers who volunteered around 35,500 hours in 2017/18. Every year the Trust recruits around 300 new volunteers.

Transfer suburban rail services to London, Mayor Sadiq Khan

WO WEEKS ago I met the rail minister Jo Johnson, along with Harriet Harman, to highlight my very strong concerns about the impact of the disastrous new rail timetable on passengers in my constituency and to press the minister to make progress on the much-needed re-opening of Camberwell station.

The new rail timetable which came into effect at the end of the May has been yet another disaster in a long series of Tory rail disasters in recent years.

Long suffering passengers in my constituency and across Southwark and Lambeth have seen their daily journeys disrupted yet again with cancelled services, overcrowded trains and missed appointments and meetings.

I travel to Parliament by train each week and like so many of my constituents have suffered from this dreadfully planned and executed change to our rail services.

Once again we’ve seen parents getting home too late to put their children to bed, commuters getting into trouble for being late for work and hundreds of young people experiencing the stress of not knowing whether they will get to important GCSE and A-Level

ontrolled Chaos is the theatre company who aim to make theatre all inclusive, both on stage and off.

Their production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is an official event for this year’s Pride in London, writes Susan Hallissey.

Set in Verona Pride the opening scene was loud, raucous and energetic, perhaps a little too loud for my liking. The Capulet’s hold a fancy dress party and as disco music played the use of flashing glasses was amusing. However, the Montague’s have had an ongoing feud with the Capulet’s for years and years so are definitely not invited. Where’s the fun in that?

Juliet (Ashley Winter) and Romeo (Carmella Brown) meet at the masque ball – yet the magic that can take place here seemed somehow missing. There were tender moments later, and I believed Juliet had fallen in love, but some humour was lost in the interaction. Two female actors take the lead roles showing love is what matters, not gender. To this end the idea of same sex roles was a success.

Romeo’s friend and kinsman Mercutio, played by the dynamic and captivating Kevin Kamara, is a true force to reckon with and

IT IS a warm summer’s night that brings me to the Globe instead of watching Brazil v Serbia to watch A Winter’s Tale - A piece of late Shakespeare that returns to many themes seen in earlier works.

From jealousy, paranoia, anxiety and the pursuit of reconciliation and forgiveness, they are all on show here.

The action is split between two places: the royal court of Sicilia, where

someone to watch, owning the stage each time he appeared. Juliet’s nurse (Olivia Thompson), though, appeared to have lost her edge, so funnier moments were lost.

Nevertheless, my companion disagreed as she was her favourite member of the ensemble.

The fight scenes and choreography also deserve a mention – praise to Fight Director Robin Heller.

The story unfolded well with minimal props, which is a credit to the cast. The final scenes managed to tap into the emotion of loss and the banality of feuds and young death.

I think my issue with the production was that it was too ‘shouty!’ But this was an energetic Romeo and Juliet celebrating love and its challenges wherever you are from. Why wouldn’t it be loud?

That’s what young love is….or so I believe! Maybe young love, or love of any description is meant to be ‘shouty!’

that ‘rural Bohemia would be a more familiar world to me than courtly Sicilia' McIntyre pushes this on us with her choice of design. The only additional adornments to the Globe’s stage is a golden framework. Not too sure of its function but it could be to imitate the Norman and Islamic architectural influences that covered 1600 Sicily. In terms of costume she made the decision that the ‘courtly’ Sicilians would be dressed in traditional robes and gowns with a hint of Hugh Hefner’s smoking jackets, while the Bohemians were attired strictly as charity shop meets H&M. I felt a lot of this was a touch superfluous due to the fact that Shakespeare regularly informs audiences where and when the action is taking place throughout the text itself.

The performances ranged from controlled and well tempered to flat and monotone. Looking through the cast list I found that some of the least experienced players handled the Globe stage with more aplomb than those vastly more experienced. The

exception to this rule was Will Keen who’s Leontes was captivating and his character’s emotional toil played for us all to see. The experienced Annette Badland, however, seemed lost at times; her voice didn’t carry and she looked truly ill at ease with some of the production’s physical elements. Other notable performances came from Adrian Bower whose loyal Camillo always had you on his side, and Becci Gemmell as Autolycus, who handled the comedic elements with ease and often had the audience in her palms.

Overall I found several design choices jarring and distracting and some of the performances that were bright lights often dulled by the occasional flat turn. That all said, a night at the Globe is always an enjoyable experience (Especially if you have a seat and a cushion!).

Based on Andrew Morton’s book, Diana: Her True Story, written in the 1990s; revelations regarding Diana’s bulimia and suicide attempts were credited to Diana’s close friends – however, it was the Princess herself who was the ‘informant.’

As we entered the theatre there was an excited buzz – cameras and photographers galore. Was this a reminder of the paparazzi Diana faced, or, according to this unbiased production, the press she courted so ingeniously? This was probably the best thing about The Diana Tape where Diana is not painted as the hard done

by Princess; as they say in the play ‘ Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.’

Any woman cheated on feels pain, anger and a gamut of emotions, and the Princess’s revenge showed a woman who was ready to use all that was at her disposal. Unfortunately, due to the lack of investment in any of the characters I just didn’t care! When Diana (Ana Cristina Schuler) said she missed her boys, William and Harry away at boarding school, I looked around? Was it just me? Or did others think that she was talking about a pair of mislaid socks? There seemed to be no emotion whatsoever. James Colthurst (Jorge Morales Pico) sadly confounded me with his accent. I was baffled as to what kind of Sloane Ranger he was!

Andrew Morton (James Clements) and his agent Michael O’Mara (Sam Hood Adrain) were at least dynamic, yet unfortunately bordering on farcical.

The stark stage not only emphasised the dodgy dialogue but also the lack of belief in the actors.

This could have been such an interesting piece but just didn’t hit the mark. More Lady Dire than Lady Di! The Diana Tapes is on at The Stockwell Playhouse, 208 Wandsworth Road, SW8 2JU until July 13th.

EDWINS INVITED us to try their new summer menu, and who doesn’t love an invite? writes Michael Holland...

The evening was mainly for the press to sample the restaurant’s latest dishes and some wines that they will be serving through the coming months, so there we were gathered around, networking with bloggers, vloggers and reviewers, and tasting such amazing bite-size delicacies as Tuna Sashimi, Summer Rolls, Beef Rib, Spring Lamb, Colchester Oysters, Tofu and Beetroot, Cod Cheeks… plus some rather moreish European wines. How lucky were we.

The restaurant above a pub in the Borough is run by a group of young go-getters aiming to provide good fare cooked impeccably, wine sourced locally and an excellent atmosphere. They succeeded on all three counts.

After sampling a variety of new dishes myself and Nina found a table by the window where we could look out at St George the Martyr church and the high street traffic. Water for the table was brought, plus menus.

We already knew what wine we

wanted as we had been struck by its fruitiness at the sampling - a very nice Austrian Grüner Veltliner.

The food choices were much more difficult to make as everything on there looked great, and we knew just how good most of them tasted.

Eventually we decided on dishes that we could share.

First up was the Wood Pigeon Breast, which was a triumph. I was wary at first as pigeon can come up either tough or gamey, or both. It was none of those but, instead, succulent, moist and nicely pink in the middle.

And then the Scallops in Filo were beyond good. This looked such a tricky dish to create, and so easy to ruin if the scallops were not cooked for a precise length of time, so to get them so perfect was a marvel. Hats off to those in the kitchen.

Edwins is a mix of old school pub decor with modern touches like suspended lighting with exposed wiring, and distressed walls, both of which would send some DIY dad into paroxysms of despair. The staff are on the ball and, I’m guessing, the chefs on top of their game. We were not rushed so when the main course arrived we were ready.

There was a beautifully cooked Miso Cod dish, accompanied by bok choy, ginger and crab rice and a fantastic crispy noodle affair that added another texture. And the Spring Lamb, too, was so, so nice... I don’t think anything that we had could have been bettered; the produce was of the highest quality, the cooking was exquisite, service excellent, and with so many other nice things on the menu to try, we will be going back.

The recycling centre that helped ‘elevate’ hundreds of homeless

PASSING THROUGH Spa Road in Bermondsey today, it is difficult to imagine the huge waste paper recycling centre and hostel that once stood there giving scores of homeless men shelter and food as well as a way back into work.

The Salvation Army ‘elevator’ at 122 Spa Road was opened in 1899 with the purpose of not only getting homeless men off the street, but also to help them rebuild their lives.

Housed in a former warehouse, it started off as a men’s hostel and recycling centre processing tons of waste paper each week, but grew quickly to include a hot food depot, laundry, refugee centre, family service centre and a rehabilitation workshop.

“It started in 1899 and by 1901 the census shows two resident officers and 102 men so it had grown quite a bit just in two years, although we are not sure how many there were to start off with,” Salvation Army officer Major Kevin Pooley told the News.

“The idea was, instead of it just being a hostel where men went to keep them off the street, it was also a rehabilitation programme and in the case of Spa Road the chosen medium of that rehabilitation was to collect recycled or reused waste paper.

“The recycling was almost incidental; it was as much as anything a way to get them back into the discipline of work and most of the men by the time they came to us had lost that.

“The men came in at a certain level and they left at an elevated level.

“The whole point was if all they were able to do when they came in was use a brush and sweep up then that’s the sort of thing they would have been given to do and eventually in the elevators men would rise up so somebody who came in and didn’t have a job and did the sweeping might find themselves being raised up and going on to do a more responsible job.”

Major Pooley explained the reasons why many men found themselves homeless at that time were broadly the same as today.

“By and large the men became homeless as a result of a chain of events,” he said.

“Some men had become alcoholics and weren’t able to hold down a job, others would have relationship breakdowns, and some would move from one part of the country to another because maybe they had lost their job.”

Records show that by 1910 the number of men in the programme at Spa Road had reached 600.

But just three years later in 1913 the elevator was devastated by fire – and

again by another blaze in 1984.

“They spent some time debating whether to refurbish it and in the end it was decided it just wasn’t costeffective,” said Major Pooley.

“It got to the point where, whether it was because it just wasn’t competitive in terms of the rest of the world cottoned on to recycling paper, the elevator closed down and all that was left was the men’s hostel.”

Spa Road eventually closed its doors in 2001 and the building was demolished in 2003.

The Salvation Army continues to help the homeless today but no longer calls centres of this kind ‘hostels’, instead referring to them as ‘life houses’.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable bridge works to be carried out, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

MILLWALL’S ASSISTANT manager Dave Livermore is known to be a deep thinker about the tactical side of the game.

Livermore, 38, completed his coaching badges last year – giving him a free summer for the first time in eight years.

But the learning doesn’t stop, and he has been a keen observer of tactical and other trends at the World Cup, admiring how Gareth Southgate has changed the entire culture around the England squad.

News caught up with the former Lions midfielder and Neil Harris’ trusted lieutenant this week to get his thoughts on tactics, how Millwall can improve, and the manager he is most excited about pitting his wits against this season.

Neil as manager always needs to have his phone turned on during the closed season. Have you been able to take a complete break?

It is different for Neil. My role allows me to switch off a bit more than he can. It was good to get some family time and rest.

It was a summer without any courses. I was able to recharge, though after a couple of weeks I was ready to come back. I’m really looking forward to this season now.

You’ve achieved your Pro Licence.

Where does the learning continue for you as a coach?

You learn in here all the time. You learn through experience.

I went to [Premiership rugby side] Saracens, which was an eye-opener. You get to see a world-class, elite environment.

I would recommend going there, it is an amazing place.

Everything is really well planned. There are loads of informal meetings, strategy conversations over coffee.

I like reading. I’ve also been catching up on a series called ‘All or Nothing’, which is based around the NFL. It follows clubs throughout the season, so you get to see their meetings, training, the head coach talking to the owners.

There have been three seasons, one with the Arizona Cardinals, one with the LA Rams and the Dallas Cowboys. They are insightful, you learn from different sports, how they manage people, how they train.

I’m quite busy like that – I like learning.

Neil loves the social side, constant conversations with players. Is that one of your strengths?

I’m getting better at that. That’s the area I’m in in terms of my learning now: management and leadership.

When you first come into it as a young coach you’re very much into the technical and tactical side of it. You’re learning how to coach, how to teach people.

Then you start looking at other aspects, the psychological and social side of it.

My role here is very much a management and leadership role so then you take an interest in that. That’s probably been the cycle of learning I’ve been on over the last eight years.

Neil is very good at it. That’s his forte.

Mine is more linked to preparing the team Monday to Saturday. That’s an area I like to think I’m quite knowledgeable in.

I enjoy learning from Neil.

Most of the squad have been under you and Neil for three years. They know the system – but where can they gain extra edges?

That’s the challenge. The team now three seasons in understands how we want to play.

We’re always trying to edge it towards the vision we had at the start. At the start you think you can play a certain way but you quickly learn that you’re not as far along as you thought.

So we try to nudge it closer to where we want to be.

We’ve seen a few teams defend in a 4-42 really well at the World Cup. The beauty of football is you don’t have to be the most talented group of players, because if you tactically get it right you can bridge that gap.

That’s what we did last season. We have to go along those same lines.

Uruguay aren’t too dissimilar from Millwall in the way they set up. Are they a side you admire and who else has caught your eye?

One hundred per cent. Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez’ performances the other night [in their 2-1 last-sixteen win over Portugal] were unbelievable. In terms of work rate Cavani was a joke.

There are certainly qualities within that Uruguay team that you admire.

to look at the players you’ve got and their qualities and set them up accordingly.

Teams with more talent can set up in different ways. It’s about getting your best players on the ball in the areas where they can hurt the opposition most.

You make sure defensively you work collectively. You’ve seen that with Brazil, that’s why they are probably obvious favourites, for different reasons this time.

We always know they have the talent but don’t always work as a team. But you could see from the first game how quickly they got back into their shape, even Neymar. They are very strong defensively and physically.

Even France, the way they set up against Argentina [in their 4-3 win] to counter attack was different to how they approached other games. So you’ve got to have a bit of everything.

There have been a couple of questionable penalty decisions. But it’s been proven, it’s made some key decisions.

At the start you’re not too sure but as the tournament has gone on you’ve accepted it. It definitely looks better in the World Cup compared to the way it was done in England [in the FA Cup last season].

The refereeing has been pretty good, it’s been nice to see. There has been leniency in relation to some tackles, though some you think should be a booking. There were some naughty challenges early on, but overall it’s made for a better tournament because you don’t want players being suspended for soft yellow cards.

One hundred per cent. That element in the World Cup has been disappointing. I don’t like seeing it.

I’m sure, well I don’t know, but I’d like to think Neymar would look back at some of the things he’s done in this tournament and maybe be a bit disappointed in himself.

But some people do what they think needs to be done to win football matches. It’s been a great tournament, but that’s been disappointing.

It’s going to be interesting, isn’t it?

Guardiola, [Mauricio] Pochettino, [Argentina boss Jorge] Sampaoli, [Atletico Madrid manager Diego] Simeone all rate him really highly.

That must be a massively exciting challenge.

took over, it shows the level of dedication.

It’s 50/50. It could be a great appointment and work really well. Or maybe he could misjudge the culture and the physicality of the Championship to start with. But he’s certainly got the pedigree to be a top, top manager in this league.

Lastly, tactically and culturally, what do you think of the job Gareth Southgate has done with England?

What I like about it is you can see a lot of learning has gone on in terms of the way that the team have bridged that gap to the media, though there was the issue of the leaked team.

That [relationship with the media] has been an issue in the past and has affected the team. You can see that’s improved, and that’s clever, that’s smart.

The way that he has set the team up means that he has got our best players in their best positions where they can be most effective.

What I like about it is we’re able to stretch teams in behind, stretch them out wide but also overload in the middle.

I’ve been really impressed. The way that he approached it and the intelligence he has shown has been impressive.

MILLWALL’S PRE-SEASON friendly fixture choices over the last four summers haven’t exactly set pulses racing, but then that’s not the point of them.

Where the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea’s marketing machines send them to places like the US and China, Millwall’s equivalent is Kent.

And perhaps after being inspired by the performances of Ben Thompson or Danny McNamara or Ryan Sandford, a few extra youngsters will be spotted in Lions jerseys around Princes Park in the future.

These games are exercises in shaking off the summer cobwebs and for Neil Harris to start integrating new signings.

At the time of writing, though, there is just one of those – Murray Wallace – further adding to the feeling of an underwhelming return to football action.

On the same weekend last year, Harris played two different teams in either half and expect something similar on Saturday.

The real interest will be in how much time Harris gives to some of the younger players. Sandford is currently next in line after Jordan Archer and Dave Martin for a place between the sticks.

Right-back McNamara made his senior debut as a sixteen-year-old in a friendly against Dover in 2016 and if he is to make a breakthrough then it could be this season.

Propelled by the goals of former Lions striker Alfie Pavey – who was named National League South and National League player of the year for 2017-18 – Dartford reached the play-off semi-finals last season but lost to Braintree to remain in the sixth tier.

Pavey has since moved on to Havant & Waterlooville a league above and the Darts replaced him with Alex Wall from Hungerford.

The Lions drew 1-1 at Dartford last season, Thompson levelling in the second half after Romaric Logan had scored before the break.

Millwall fans will be hoping to see Byron Webster in action for the first time since September last year, while Wallace should make his debut after his summer move from Scunthorpe.

Message from Millwall’s Fan on the Board...

THE 2017-18 Season was great on so many levels. The beginning was very slow but the team picked up and came together and the connection between the fans and the players at the end of the season had to make it one of the best years ever supporting Millwall.

I am so proud to be able to represent our fan base. The season started off with our fans giving those people caught up in the terrorist attacks last year in London a huge show of support.

The way you behaved last season has to be acknowledged as it really helped me to get the travel ban for Leeds overturned after ten years of our fans having to deal with.

I was over the moon when I got the

notification that Leeds had relaxed the travel arrangements, not just because Millwall fans were then free to roam around Leeds city centre and drink in any pub. Our fans behaved fantastically well – so please pat yourselves on the back.

I was asked by a Millwall fan called Dean if I could possibly help raise the profile of the story of little West Ham fan Isla. I managed to get her story into our programme, and massive thanks to Southwark News who have run front-page stories about Millwall fans doing great things to raise money for her.

Huge thanks also to Millwall fans Jamie, Tony and to my good friend Nick Hart who between them have raised well over £30k for Isla and showed that cancer has no colours.

IT HAS already become a Millwall mantra even before the season has started – get to 50 points as soon as possible next season and go from there.

Neil Harris has said it, Jed Wallace reiterated it, and Shaun Williams was on message this week ahead of the first pre-season game this Saturday.

Despite last season’s superb run which brought the play-offs to within touching distance, Lions players arrived back for pre-

season training last week with their feet firmly on the ground.

Expectations will probably be higher among Lions fans that a better start to the campaign could put them into a position after the turn of the year to go one better than last season and clinch a topsix place, Millwall are focusing on hitting their first big target of 2018-19.

Millwall passed 50 points on March 6 last season with a 2-1 win at Hull.

The Lions are one of the bookies’ favourites to be involved in a relegation scrap next season.

Williams, though, isn’t paying much heed to that.

“We go into the campaign with the same objective – get to 50 points as soon as possible. We like the underdog tag and proving people wrong,” Williams said.

“Hopefully over the next couple of years we can turn the odds around and be one of the favourites to go up rather than down.

“I don’t think people can get too carried away. We had a great season but you’re not necessarily going to have a great season every year. We’ll do our very best to make sure we’re still in this division at the end of the campaign.

“The manager expects us to get

to 50 points as soon as possible. If we can get to that by Christmas we can continue on like we did last season.”

Millwall start the league with Middlesbrough at home on August 4, and Williams is keen for the chance to exact some revenge after Tony Pulis’ side ended the Lions’ play-off chances with a 2-0 win at the Riverside in April.

“We owe them one after what happened at the end of the season.

Every year I’ve been here we’ve started slowly so it would be nice to start the way we were going towards the end of last season and continue that all the way.”

Harris currently has nineteen fit senior players available, meaning the likes of under-23 youngsters, including right-back Danny McNamara and winger Lewis White, could get opportunities at Princes Park.

Byron Webster is also set to make his first senior appearance since last September.

“Assuming he comes through training this week he’s available,” Harris said. “Of course there are some sharpness issues in training, but he has completed every minute of every session so far.

“He’s feeling good. He looks fit and strong. Pre-season is a perfect time for him to be integrated back into the group over the course of July and August.

“He will be able to build up fitness and minutes.

“There will be 22 players there.

There will be most of the senior players, but some won’t be involved because they have knocks or niggles, minor ones over the first ten days of preseason training.

“It’s not ideal but what it does do is give an opportunity to some of the younger players to get some minutes with the first-team group in front of a good crowd in a competitive friendly.

“The downside is you might miss some players for 45 minutes, but the flipside is the youngsters get a really good test.”
