HE OUTPOURING of grief for Joshua Boadu is very personal, but also part of a bigger more menacing picture for people across London alarmed by the huge rise in knife crime.

In the midst of his own heartache Joshua’s brother Jeffrey is hoping that his murder will not result in any more attacks and has urged young people to stop using knives.

In light of the escalating violence, with another knife crime reported in Bermondsey this week in St James’s churchyard, it is time for those who do have information to come forward and help the police tackle the problem.

All too often in this paper we have to follow up a report on a youngster being murdered with a call for witnesses to break their wall of silence and come forward.

It very well might go against a street code, which is as old as the day the police were formed, but believing that people can sort this out on their own only ever results in more killing and more lives ruined. As Jeffrey told the paper this week, young people need to “consider if it’s worth it to destroy someone’s family and destroy your own family.”

Crimestoppers was set up 30 years ago and allows callers to give information without giving their name or any personal details. At a time of massive police cuts this independent charitable trust employs more than one hundred staff and almost 350 volunteers.

Joshua’s family say that he was a happy, quiet young man who was not involved in gangs and so his killing shows that potentially anyone can become a victim.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle has urged anyone with information about what happened to Joshua to “speak up” and says people can come to him directly.

“There are currently two million unsolved crimes – let's not add to that grim failure here,” he told us.

And he rightly says that parents and older siblings should speak to younger family members and give information.

Author draws on family memories of post-war Bermondsey for new novel

AN AUTHOR has drawn on her family’s memories of post-war Bermondsey and working in the Alaska fur factory in her latest novel.

Hattie’s Home, written by Mary Gibson, is set in Bermondsey in 1947 and centres on three women who forge a friendship while working in the factory and the difficulties and prejudices they face while trying to rebuild their lives after the Second World War. After eight years spent in the Auxiliary Territorial Service – the women’s branch of the British Army – Hattie Wright returns to a Bermondsey she no longer recognises.

She reluctantly takes a job in the Alaska factory – but conflict is sparked when she tries to get herself promoted up the factory floor.

Meanwhile, after journeying across the world to get married, Clara is betrayed and returns penniless and homeless and tries to raise a child in the face of prejudice, while war widow Lou has lost more than most in the war.

“It’s a story of women but also of the post-war Bermondsey people and especially the children,” said Gibson, 65, whose mother and aunts worked in the Alaska factory, and who worked there for a brief period herself.

“I was born in Bermondsey in 1953 in Thorburn Square in one of the old Victorian houses before they were demolished and turned into flats.

“There were usually three families to the old Victorian houses; that was a common type of housing for Bermondsey people in those days.

goes home to, but unfortunately she can’t live there because her eccentric mother hasn’t got the room - so she goes off and sets up a squat in Southwark Park.

“After the war a group of about 20 families moved into ex-Army huts in Southwark Park abandoned by an artillery unit and they lived there into the 50s because there was nowhere else for them to live at that time.”

In Hattie’s Home, Hattie gets involved in trying to help the post-war children of Bermondsey, who spend their days playing on the rubble of

bombsites.

“Up until the 50s, the bomb sites were still there and they were like the first adventure playgrounds,” said Gibson, who now lives in Welling.

“An elderly relative actually gave me most of the information about the bomb sites.

“He particularly remembered cooking up potatoes in old oil drums and going to the docks and on to the barges to nick peanuts.

“Hattie gets involved in a local movement called the children’s flats based in the old tenements in

“They turned this old flat over to the kids and let them play and cook and decorate in it as a little home because there were so few playgrounds and the homes were so cramped.”

A MAN in his 20s was knifed in a Bermondsey churchyard in broad daylight just moments after fearing he was about to be robbed by a pair of teenagers.

The victim is said to have stood up as two teenagers approached him in St James’ churchyard, bordered by Thurland Road and St James’ Road, after thinking he was about to be robbed.

He was then “struck with a knife” which cut his abdomen during the incident at about 8pm on Tuesday, June 26.

An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, told the News she had heard a woman was also involved in the incident – but this was not confirmed by police.

“I saw the commotion and I walked up there and someone said that a lady had been mugged and someone had intervened to try and stop it and they got stabbed,” she said.

“I didn’t actually see anything but I saw the tape around the scene.

“There were lots of people out of the pub [The Gregorian].”

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and found a man in his 20s suffering from a laceration to the abdomen.

“The man was treated at the scene.

“Officers established that the victim was approached by two teenage suspects in St James’ churchyard.

“Fearing that a robbery was about to take place, the victim stood up and was struck with a knife. He did not require hospital treatment.”

AN EYEWITNESS has told of the terrifying moment a motorist mounted a kerb, narrowly missing a baby in a pushchair, and crashed into a building before running off as the car burst into flames.

The police spokesperson said there had been initial reports of a noxious substance but no such substance was involved in the incident.

No arrests have been made. Police inquiries continue.

The man, who did not wish to be named, watched on in horror as a couple dragged the baby to safety just in time as the car careered towards them on Rotherhithe New Road.

It has since emerged that police had tried to stop the car just minutes earlier in Bestwood Street, Lewisham.

Speaking to the News, the eyewitness, who is a father himself, said he did not know how “the kid didn’t get killed”.

“I saw the car coming towards me and I thought he was police to be honest, but without the lights, and all of a sudden he just did a left up on the kerb,” he said.

“The mum and dad jumped for safety with the buggy and the car burst into flames straight away.

“The geezer got out the motor and legged it down the road.

“There was one geezer in the car but when he got out and legged it all of a sudden there were two.

“That’s a terrible thing to do; if you’ve done whatever you’ve done just take responsibility – you don’t put a baby and its parents in jeopardy.”

“At about 12.50pm on Tuesday, June 26, we attempted to stop the car in Bestwood Street, Lewisham,” said the spokesperson.

“A short while later it was in collision with a building in Rotherhithe New Road at about 12.54pm.

“The driver fled the scene.

“There have been no arrests. Inquiries are ongoing.

“The vehicle was not being pursued.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We were called at 12.50pm on June 26 to Rotherhithe New Road, SE16, to reports of a road traffic collision.

"We sent a single responder in a car and an ambulance crew to the scene but we did not take anyone to hospital.”

THE GRIEVING brother of Joshua Boadu, who was fatally stabbed in broad daylight in Bermondsey, has paid tribute to the “easy-going” 23year-old who moved to the area for a safer life after being knifed as a child in Peckham.

Joshua, known to his friends as SJ, was fatally stabbed following a run in with a group of males in Linsey Street at about 6.21pm on June 11.

He was put on life support at King’s College Hospital, where his family kept a vigil at his bedside for eleven days until he sadly passed away after his heart stopped beating in the early hours of Friday, June 22.

Joshua was born at the very same hospital on April 14, 1995, to his Ghanaian parents Frank, 62, and Pat, 47.

The apprentice engineer was the third child in a devout Christian family and had two older brothers, Jeffrey, 28, and Jerry, 25, and a younger sister, Joanna, 22, with whom he was extremely close.

Paying tribute to his youngest brother, Jeffrey Boadu, 28, told the News: “I think the key word to describe him is easy going; he wasn’t a life of the party sort of person, he was just quiet and minded his own business, stuck with the same friends.

“Since he came to Bermondsey he’d go to music festivals and things which he never used to before and I know he enjoyed that a lot and listening to house music.

“We were all close but Josh was definitely closest to my sister Joanna because of their ages and them living in my Mum’s house.

“They had the same group of friends and were like best friends.”

Joshua went to school at St Joseph’s Catholic College in West Norwood before going on to Saint Francis Xavier College in Wandsworth.

He and his family previously lived in Peckham, but decided to move to Bermondsey after he was stabbed in an unprovoked attack as a youngster.

“I think something happened to someone from Peckham and they thought my brother Jerry had done it and they maybe saw Josh and thought ‘that’s his brother’,” said Jeffrey.

“He was young – he was only twelve or thirteen at the time. It wasn’t as serious as this time and I don’t think he spent the night in the hospital, but it was definitely something we were worried about so I urged my Mum to move to Bermondsey.

“I work in a school so I’m with a lot of secondary school students and the amount of students that have said they’ve seen their friend get stabbed, it’s quite worrying and it’s a traumatising thing to see.”

Jeffrey said his brother always had at least two friends around him and was never alone – apart from the day he was fatally stabbed.

Joshua was stabbed three times before he managed to run to safety at a friend’s home in nearby Lucey Way, his brother said.

“He was stabbed in the chest – not the heart, but it cut an artery which caused the most damage – and he was stabbed in the shoulder blade where I guess he tried to run off and in his hand as well,” said Jeffrey.

“The hospital didn’t see him seeing it through the weekend so he definitely fought hard – he was very strong.

“We wanted him to pass when he was ready and he passed at 00.35am on Friday [June 22] with immediate family around him and his girlfriend Chloe.

“They had been together a few years and she was at the hospital every day first thing in the morning.

“We are all trying to stay strong for my Mum really because it hit my Mum really hard but I think it will hit my sister.

“Josh and his friends kept themselves to themselves so it seemed so out of the blue that it didn’t feel real – and it still doesn’t feel real.”

Joshua’s death has rocked Jeffrey to the point he now plans to move away from the area with his wife Claire and their twins.

“I’m trying to get out for my children’s sake; I don’t know when this kind of thing is going to end,” he said. “It just seems to be part and parcel of life which is crazy.

“I don’t regret my upbringing – I’ve

learned a lot of life lessons so it does definitely build your character – but now, especially with Josh’s killing, it seems you don’t even need to be gang affiliated now to be targeted.

“I think life is too short and you’ve got to realise your time could come at any moment.

“That’s what I’ve realised now – you’ve got to try and enjoy your life as much as possible, especially your loved ones.”

Jeffrey also thanked the community, who gathered together to pray for Joshua at a candlelit vigil at Bermondsey’s Blue Market square last Tuesday.

“I have to thank the Bermondsey community as a whole because they’ve shown my family so much love and we don’t even know some of them necessarily – but they knew Josh,” he said.

“He had a massive impact on people other than his own family, so much so that they were basically family as well.

“I think young people need to think about the long-term effects of using a knife and consider if it’s worth it to destroy someone’s family and destroy your own family as well.

“Nothing good can come out of using a knife.”

“We cannot allow violent killers to attack on our streets in broad daylight and get away with it,” he told the News.

“If you aren't sure then let the police rule it out.

“Speak to younger family members too; all information will help.

A COFFEE roaster has opened a barista training centre in Bankside made from recycled materials destined for landfill – including an old Covent Garden pub floor.

Bristol-based Extract Coffee Roasters has used the pub floor for its espresso bar, and its benches are made from leftover supplies from a housing project in Victoria.

The company joins 50 other businesses at the Sustainable Bankside building in Sumner Street which now forms Europe's largest community of sustainable start-ups.

After starting out as a small coffee cart, Extract now supplies coffee to more than 70 cafes, restaurants and venues across the capital, including Searcys at St Paul’s Cathedral, The Connaught, Deliciously Ella’s Mae Deli, and Regent’s University.

In the last two years they have been closely involved with homelessness charity The Passage and have provided barista training to homeless and vulnerable adults as part of a Hotel School training programme in collaboration with the Goring Hotel.

Six-year-old Millwall fan’s wish to have ‘legs like her friends’ could come true after smashing fundraising target for surgery

Ellice’s family held an appreciation night on Saturday, June 23, to announce the news that they had hit their fundraising target and to her surprise Millwall winger Jed Wallace turned up.

Dad Joe said the pair had formed a close bond since Jed organised for the whole family to visit The Den to meet the players and see the dressing room and dugout after he read about her plight on Twitter.

“Ellice absolutely loved it; she didn’t even know he was coming – nobody knew he was invited,” he said.

“He said it would be great if in a year’s time she could walk out with me without a walker.”

Ellice is expected to have selective dorsal rhizotomy surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital on July 20.

The surgery is not currently available on the NHS but it could help her to walk unaided.

She will spend a week in hospital and then two weeks in a nearby hospice to attend daily physiotherapy sessions before returning home to Kent.

“She may need to have physiotherapy for up to two years because the operation effectively takes her legs back to a babylike state and most children can take up to two years to learn to walk from newborn,” said Joe. “Like any surgery, there are no guarantees. For us, if she walks with a little bit of a limp that would be great because she has cerebral palsy and she’s got it for life but if it can minimise the walking aids she has to use, like the wheelchair and the frame, then that would be great.

“We hope we can improve her independence and quality of life.

“I just want her to be able to have a life that is as ‘normal’ as possible because, although there are disability laws, she would be more restricted in her career options and we just want the best for our little girl.”

Ham. “I think we just felt like we had given something back because of everything they did for Jon; we did it to try and help other people and we were just really pleased that we did it and everyone said they would take part again next year.”

Sue, 63, said Jon still had to have regular blood checks but was doing well and was looking forward to travelling to Valencia for his birthday in August.

“I’ve got colleagues at work now saying their dad or their husband have this and it’s nice that other people talk to us about it because I thinks it was a bit of a taboo subject,” added the school worker, whose parents sadly died from cancer.

A SIX-year-old Millwall fan’s wish to have “legs like her friends” could finally come true after she smashed her fundraising target for potentially life-changing surgery.

As previously reported in the News, Ellice Barr was just 22-months-old when she was diagnosed with diplegic cerebral palsy after her parents noticed she was barely crawling.

The youngster, who was born seven weeks early weighing just 3lbs 9oz, has splints on her legs and has to use a walking frame to get around as the condition causes muscle tension and spasms in her lower legs.

Now aged six, Lions fan Ellice says she wants to have legs like her school friends and be able to climb.

And her wish could finally come true after hitting her £65,000 fundraising target thanks to an incredible show of support from both the community where she lives in Deal, Kent, and fans and players across the football divide.

Speaking to the News, Ellice’s dad Joe, 38, said his family, which includes Ellice’s eight-year-old brother Jay, and mum Amy, 32, had been overwhelmed by the support.

A BERMONDSEY grandad and his family have raised hundreds for the charity that supported them after he was given the devastating news that he had prostate cancer.

Jon Lia was diagnosed with the disease in January 2012 after insisting on a full check-up, following the shock of losing a friend to bowel cancer.

The father-of-three, then 53, had shown no symptoms of having the cancer, which can take up to 20 years to appear, but fortunately doctors caught it early.

Crunch vote on shopping centre plans ELEPHANT AND CASTLE

THE FINAL vote on controversial e Elephant and Castle town centre regeneration plans will take place at next week’s council meeting on Tuesday July 3 – as Delancey tells its critics it can’t get more funding for social housing but that affordable rents are ‘in our interest’.

Stafford Lancaster, a director at Delancey, told the News on Tuesday: “We are committed to providing as much affordable housing as possible in the new town centre in Elephant and Castle.

“A key part of the success of our project at East Village in Stratford has been its diverse mix of homes offered at both market and affordable rents, alongside independent retailers.

“It is in our interest to offer these new homes for rent at levels that are realistic for local people, to ensure a vibrant community now and into the future.

“Since the last planning committee in January, we have increased the social rent offering in the new town centre by 3.5 times to 116 homes.

“We have achieved this by securing grant funding from The Greater London Authority; the maximum amount of funding we are able to secure.

“There might also a viability review mechanism that will provide more lower cost housing as the town centre becomes more established.

“It’s really important to recognise that we are investing in Elephant and Castle for the long term.

“Delivering diversity in both the residential and retail offer in the new town centre is essential to its long term success, alongside the world class education and new transport.”

Planning committee councillors will decide whether to greenlight developer

Delancey’s plans, five months after the decision was deferred at a tense council meeting on January 16 that ran into the early hours.

After a protracted campaign, Delancey has now tabled a significantly revised planning application – but campaigners say it still falls short of their demands.

The application submitted to the planning committee in January included 33 homes at social rent (ten per cent of the total), 158 at London living rent (40 per cent of the total) and half – 145 – at

The social rent homes will be owned and managed by Southwark Council or another registered provider. Discount market rate means homes have their rent capped at 80 per cent of market rent, while London living rent is eligible for households of incomes up to £60,000.

The revised offer to be debated has increased the proportion of social rent homes to 116, but has reduced the number of homes at London living rent to 53 and increased the number at discount market rate to 161.

The number of social rent homes has become one of the biggest sticking points in the bid, with campaigners saying the offer ‘gives with one hand and takes away with another’, as reported by the News last week.

Up the Elephant – supported by the 35% campaign, Southwark Green Party, and Defend Council Housing - want Delancey’s profits to pay for half the housing to be at social rent and half at London Living Rent.

‘Up the Elephant’ campaigners say they will be turning out in force on Tuesday at 5.30pm in a last-ditch protest outside the council’s offices on Tooley Street, lobbying councillors to reject the revised offer.

DAVE ALDEN, one of the architects of the historic Blue Plaque scheme and champion of heritage in Southwark, has died after a ‘long battle with cancer’.

Mr Alden, 66, was Chair of the Southwark Heritage Association for twenty years, and he and his wife Veronica were instrumental in setting up the Blue Plaque Scheme in partnership with the News and Southwark Council, to recognise the people, places and events that have made Southwark special throughout history.

The idea of setting up the scheme came about as the heritage association looked into why Southwark, London’s original borough, was so underrepresented in the usual blue plaque scheme run by English Heritage. Under that scheme the person must be dead and the building still standing. The former was not a problem, but so many of the borough’s buildings had been destroyed in WWII, and even more bulldozed by 1960s and ‘70s architects.

Since launching Southwark’s own Blue Plaque scheme in 2002 with the News and supported by Southwark Council – the borough now has in excess of fifty plaques from Sam Wannamaker at Shakespeare Globe, to Charlie Chaplin, Charles Dickens to living icons like Michael Caine. In keeping with Dave’s life-long commitment to engaging local people in our rich heritage, Southwark’s Blue Plaques are chosen by the people of Southwark and over the year tens of thousands of people have voted.

Southwark Heritage Association was formed in 1986 under the slogan, 'Historic Southwark Alive Today' at a time when the history of the borough was way down the list of importance for Southwark Council.

Since then the money generated in

tourism has grown out of all recognition.

As a non-profit making charitable body Southwark Heritage Association, run by Dave and his wife Veronica has played a key role in raising the importance of history and tourism to the borough.

Last year another one of their other projects Southwark Young Pilgrim celebrated 20 years. The Dulwich based couple set the scheme up to give local school children training in the borough’s history and act as tour guides to visitors coming out of London Bridge Station. Securing the patronage of Rotherhithe-born film icon Sir Michael Caine the pilgrims is still going strong under the ethos ‘that which we inherit from the past, use and develop in the present and leave, enhanced, for our children's future.’

His wife, Veronica, paid tribute to him, telling the News: “On Sunday the 17th of June 2018 a light went out in the Alden house.

“Dave lost his long battle against cancer, and passed away where he wanted to be at our home. Dave was, I'm proud to say, my amazing husband and partner for over 40 years, and an amazing father and grandfather.

“He is sorely missed by all the family. We are and always have been a very close family and he is with us always in our hearts, thoughts and everything we do.

“Dave's passions were his family, his garden, DIY, cooking, and Southwark.

“He was born and grew up in Peckham, moved to Dulwich and had lived here ever since, a true Southwark boy.

“He always saw opportunities to learn new things, a philosophy of lifelong learning that he has passed on to his kids, always encouraging us whenever we showed an interest in anything but never trying to impose his own interests.

“Whenever I pick up a power-tool,

a cooking implement or visit a museum I know he’ll be with me… and in the case of the first two, probably whispering how I should be doing it.”

As chair of Southwark Heritage Association, Mr Alden was often seen around Southwark taking pictures, and attending blue plaque unveilings, and Pilgrims Awards.

Over the years, he had built up a large picture library, chronicling the changes that had taken place in Southwark.

Mr Alden worked tirelessly to save threatened historic buildings, including the Concrete House in Dulwich and St Giles Porch in Camberwell.

In his commitment to the borough, he also held roles on the Chamber of commerce, The Pool of London Partnership, String of Pearls and in 1996 the first Southwark Pageant, depicting London through the ages.

The popular event was always well attended and ran for several seasons.

Chaucer's Canterbury Pilgrims on horseback in their colourful costumes, was the focal point of the procession, followed by an army of medieval knights, Paladins and their ladies, accompanied by court musicians, jesters, jugglers, and a performing bear.

In recognition of his tireless work over the years Dave Alden has received the Liberty of Camberwell, a civic award, and had been presented to the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the Royal Family at Buckingham Palace.

Details of his funeral are yet to be announced.

400 march to ‘reclaim’ the woodlands

HUNDREDS OF residents turned out for a march in a display of solidarity against crime in Rotherhithe and to “reclaim” their area after a string of incidents.

Sunday’s peaceful demonstration was organised by the recently-launched Canada Water Safety Network after the community became concerned by muggings and knife crime in the area, particularly Russia Dock Woodland.

A huge crowd of about 400 people met at Stave Hill steps to march through the streets of Rotherhithe armed with banners painted with slogans such as “no robbin’ hoods in the woods”.

Claire Thurlow, who helped organise the event, said the strength of support “underlined just how concerned people were about the spike in knife crime” in the area.

“There is still some unease ahead of the school holidays – a time when crimes seem to peak – but reclaiming Russia Dock Woods was a potent symbol,” she told the News.

"It is a green lung helping a community to breathe; it has artery pathways that connect us to each other – to home, to work, to school, to fun.

“It is used by activity clubs and groups across the demographic, every class, creed or nationality.

“It is bordered by five schools, four primary and one secondary and the crowd reflected that.

“Safety is paramount and affects us all.”

Steve Cornish, chair of the Friends of Russia Dock Woodland, said the group sent “a lot of gratitude to the organisers of the event for their efforts”.

“It’s definitely sent out a loud and strong message to the people in power that we are not going to let this area go down,” he said.

“We don’t want it to be just a one-day wonder and I’m sure it won’t be – we want to carry this on and show that we are fighting against the massive rise in crime in the last year or so.”

The march was also attended by local police officers and councillors, Redriff Primary School headteacher Mickey Kelly, and Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle.

A public meeting was also held at Redriff Primary School on Friday to address the community’s concerns over crime in the area.

As a result of the meeting, police patrol shifts have been increased to cover the early morning period when some of the recent muggings have taken place.

THE FAMILY of the third graffiti artist who died after being hit by a Loughborough Junction train have said ‘the only solace we have is he died doing something he loved’.

Twenty-three-year-old Jack Gilbert, from Bush Hill Park in Enfield, was one of three men who died after being stuck by a train near Loughborough Junction on Monday, June 18.

Jack died with Harrison ScottHood, also aged 23, from Muswell Hill, and nineteen-year-old Alberto Fresneda Carrasco, from Hampstead.

His family said: "There are no words to describe the devastation we feel. He was a wonderful son, brother, uncle and boyfriend.

“His generosity was endless and he would help anyone who needed it.

"He lit up everyone's world just by being in it and never failed to put a smile on people's faces.

"The hole he has left in our hearts will never be filled.

"His talent for art even from an early age was exceptional.

“Everyone loved Jack and the only solace we have is he died doing something he loved."

British Transport Police believe the trio of graffiti artists died after an out of service passenger train hit them shortly after 1am while spraying graffiti, and are still appealing for information to help trace their movements.

All three were seen in Brixton earlier on Sunday evening.

HARRIET HARMAN and Helen Hayes handed a 2000-signature petition to re-open the defunct Camberwell station to transport minister Jo Johnson this week – a year after TfL was meant to publish the business case for reopening.

MP Harman told the News: “Helen Hayes MP and I met the Rail Minister, Jo Johnson MP, to press the case for reopening Camberwell Station and deliver a petition of over 2000 local people’s support.

“The Minister told us that Transport for London is moving into the final stages of evaluating the case for re-opening the station, so I along with Helen, South London and Maudsley Hospital, Kings College Hospital, SE5 Forum, Camberwell College of Arts, and Cllr Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council have written urgently to TfL Commissioner Mike Brown to reiterate and emphasise with absolute clarity the level of local support from businesses, organisations and residents for reopening the station.

Last month, as the News reported, members of the SE5 forum staged a demonstration on Camberwell Green, arguing that bringing the derelict station back into use will help tackle the growing problem of air pollution in the capital.

Sophy Taylor, on behalf of the SE5 Forum, said: "We're delighted that Harriet Harman and Helen Hayes have been able to put the case for reopening Camberwell railway station to Jo Johnson in person.

"Community support is such a vital factor to consider when prioritising which transport projects move forward.

This message needs to be heard loud and clear at the department of transport, and at TfL. "This visit today demonstrated just how much residents and businesses in SE5 want the station to be reopened."

The campaign has grown since 2014, when re-opening the station was first

mooted as part of the proposed Bakerloo line extension, with two potential routes via Old Kent Road or Camberwell.

The Old Kent Road has gained political traction as part of wider regeneration plans for Old Kent Road.

However, TfL had committed to publishing a business case for re-opening Camberwell station in May 2017 - but are still yet to be published.

Last month, Matthew Yates, TfL’s Head of Transport Planning and Projects, said: “We are working with Southwark Council and Network Rail to produce a business case looking at reopening the Camberwell Thameslink station.

"One of the key things we need to assess is future public transport needs and demand to determine if the project should be taken forward. We anticipate the business case will be released shortly.”

As of this week, a date is still yet to be confirmed.

A spokesperson for TfL also disputed the SE5 Forum's claims that the station's platforms still existed, staying although some old infrastructure exists, it is in poor repair and has not been used for decades, and there is no indication it would be safe to use.

Toilet becomes feminist art gallery

AN OLD public toilet in a Camberwell park has been transformed into a feminist art gallery.

The Bower, opened by Joyce Cronin and Louise Bailey, is housed in a former public loo in Brunswick Park which sat derelict for 20 years, and a nearby park keeper’s hut.

The art gallery and publications studio

will host a year-long programme of women artists and writers drawing on the gallery’s location and context, as well as feminist and socio-political themes.

It will expand out into the surrounding park in the form of installations, projection and sculptures, and the adjoining café will explore the concepts of food and hospitality within a feminist practice.

The space, which is one of London’s smallest art galleries at fifteen square metres, takes its name from the phrase meaning “a pleasant shady place under

trees” and “a woman’s private room”.

The Bower will also incorporate a book shop and produce books on site by Publication Studio London.

The debut exhibition at the gallery is Frances Scott’s Diviner which takes its title from a short documentary Diviner Water in Luppitt (1976), housed in the South West Film and Television Archive in Plymouth.

“Diviner” is a term originating from the 15th century to describe a person who might use special powers to predict future events, or for someone who seeks

out water under the ground with the use of a divining or dowsing rod.

The gallery was launched via crowdfunding and Arts Council funding.

Frances Scott: Diviner will be open from June 21 to July 22 Wednesday to Sunday 12-5pm at The Bower, Brunswick Park, Camberwell, SE5 7RH. An in-conversation event with Frances Scott, Chu-Li Shewring and Karen Di Franco will take place on July 17.

Calls to join world record attempt for longest relay Huge barges to be

FOR 30 days and 30 nights during July, Londoners from all 32 boroughs will run 5k and 10k legs in an attempt to break the world record for longest continuous relay.

The I Move London Relay, organised by former Team GB triathlete Danny Bent and running shoe makers ASICS, will cover 4,000 miles of London, with a route that goes through Southwark.

The relay begins on June 29 at Tower Bridge, and those who want to run a leg can sign up on the website for £20.

The only criteria is that runners must be able to maintain an average pace of eleven minutes per mile, since the relay has to stay on schedule.

The registration fee of £20 will go to the costs of running the event, but participants can fundraise too.

"I am passionate about the power of sport and its ability to bring people together, and I am equally passionate about this brilliant city we live in," Danny Bent said. "But there are problems on our streets."

"We developed the I Move London Relay to unite London through the simple action of running," Bent continued. "We want to bring together every corner of the city, celebrate all of us, and raise some cash for those that need it."

The relay will support official charity partners The Running Charity, Sported, and Laureus Sport for Good, which help young people who are affected by homelessness, gang culture, and mental health.

CREWS ARMED with fifteenfoot oars will race historic 30tonne barges along the River Thames this weekend.

The 43rd annual Thames Historic Barge Driving Race will take place over a seven-mile course between the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the City of Westminster this Saturday, June 30.

Each barge taking part is almost 100 years old and will be manned by fifteen-foot oars used by crews of freemen and apprentices of the Company of Watermen and

Lightermen.

The crews’ navigational skills will be put to the test as each barge attempts to collect at least one pennant flag from a moored barge along the course.

The event commemorates the skills of traditional Thames watermen and lightermen who used to move freight around on the Thames by barge using oars (or sweeps, as they were known) and the strong tidal currents of the River Thames alone.

The movement of cargo on the River Thames by this method was used until the closure of the Central London docks in the 1970s.

The Thames Barge Driving Trust

was established in January 2016 and formerly known as Transport on Water.

The original organisation was started by a group of journeymen, lightermen and watermen in 1974 in an attempt to reverse the decline of the traditional lighterage industry on the River Thames.

The race will begin at Greenwich at 12pm on Saturday, June 30.

TfL fines led woman ‘close to a breakdown’ BERMONDSEY

A BERMONDSEY woman said she was close to “a nervous breakdown” after receiving £400 worth of fines while taking communion to an elderly resident and visiting the hospital.

The 74-year-old woman, who did not want to be named, received the fines

from Transport for London after allegedly driving through a congestion charge zone on a number of occasions.

However she says she is permitted to drive through the zone since she has a disabled badge and an AD [alternative disability] permit.

“I’ve had a total of about seven notices from TfL saying I owe them an awful lot of money,” she told the News.

“One of the notices said my car was in

Great Dover Street but I wasn’t – I parked my car in Mandela Way and walked.

“I had been to church and I’m a Eucharistic minister and was taking communion to a senior citizen.

“I had an operation in March of this year and regularly have to visit Guy’s and St Thomas’ and have to drive through the congestion zone.

“I have a badge and I’m permitted to

drive into the congestion zone.”

The woman said the situation was “greatly affecting” her nerves.

“I feel as if I’m going to have a nervous breakdown; I could cry at the drop of a hat,” she said.

Transport for London said it had cancelled all of the charges after being approached by the News.

Paul Cowperthwaite, general manager of road user charging at TfL, said: “We

have been in contact with [the woman] and cancelled all charges on her account and have extended her discount in order to ensure that she doesn’t receive any further penalty fares.

“These charges occurred after [she] hadn’t contacted us to apply for the appropriate discount.

“We recognise that this was a genuine error so are happy to cancel any charges.”

Campaign starts to turn fire station into ‘culture centre’

A CROWDFUNDING campaign has been launched to raise £25,000 to turn Peckham Road fire station into a new arts space.

South London Gallery hopes to open the revamped building to the public on September 20, 2018 as Southwark's newest 'cultural centre', offering free arts exhibitions, education projects and other events to the community.

Construction work on the formerly derelict building has now been completed, but funds are still needed to kit the space out with a communal kitchen, artists' studio and other furniture and fittings.

The crowdfunder will run until July 2, and unless it hits the £25,000 target, none of the money will be received.

Georgina Davey, head of development at the South London Gallery, told the News: “The money we raise from our crowdfunding campaign will be a huge boost in the final stages of fundraising for the Fire Station before it opens in September.

"We have set ourselves the challenge of raising £25,000 by July 2 to kit out the Fire Station and every donation will bring us a step closer to this target.

"The South London Gallery is a registered charity and all our exhibitions and education projects are completely free of charge.

community will help us transform the fire station into an inspiring arts space for everyone by making a donation and spreading the word to friends and family.”

The Grade II listed fire station was donated to the gallery by a mystery benefactor in 2014, after many years empty and unused.

Dating from 1867, it is the earliest surviving purpose-built fire station in London.

A YOUNG musician from Peckham who recently lost his battle to cancer has had one of his instrumental tracks turned into a complete song, with the help of charity CLIC Sargent and producer Stuart Epps.

Steven Hughes died in September 2017, aged just twenty, after being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in February, earlier that year.

He was a star pupil at the Norwood School in Lambeth. Not only was Steven named the most talented student in his year, he also now has an award named after him: The Steven Hughes Award for Excellence in Performing Arts.

Before his death, Steven had created an instrumental track and made an appeal for other singers to finish the song.

Working with the CLIC Sargent Music Programme, Steven's mother Tammy Jane was able to fulfill the request.

CLIC Sargent found a singer, Natalie Holmes, and also reached out to Stuart Epps, a producer who has worked with Elton John, Oasis, and Robbie Williams. "I couldn't believe the quality of the composition when I opened the file," Natalie Holmes, who wrote the lyrics and provided the vocals for the track, said. "He clearly had a very unique creative talent, and it was an absolute pleasure to be able to finish the song for Steven."

"It was an honour to be involved in Steven’s song, since it's in memory of such an inspirational young man and to raise awareness and funds for CLIC Sargent," said Mr Epps.

Towards the end of his treatment, Steven asked his family to support other young musicians with cancer, and now all money raised in Steven's name will go to the CLIC Sargent Music Programme. “Steven was an amazing musical talent who was truly inspirational - a quiet, kind and

‘Help us raise cash to keep Peckham Festival free’

THE ORGANISERS of the annual Peckham Festival are trying to raise £20,000 so they can keep this year's event free.

Set up in 2016, the festival aims to celebrate Peckham's culture and creativity, and last year's event attracted 15,000 people - and was entirely run by volunteers.

Co-director Ian Graham told the News: "Peckham Festival has taken the bold step to become a Community Interest Company (CIC) and continues to be 100 per cent not for profit and free to the

public. "Whilst community enthusiasm for this event is overwhelmingly positive, we've decided to look at alternative ways of raising the money as we've only had limited funds been given to us by local businesses thus far.

"If local people and businesses do decide to back the project over the coming weeks via the crowdfunding campaign, there's some brilliant rewards on offer in return.

"Not only that, they'll also get a massive feel-good factor for helping this year's festival to come alive."

The festival's crowdfunding page describes Peckham as "the most exciting place to be in London - over 300 years of urban evolution have made it the vibrant

cultural epicentre that it is today.

"Unlike many parts of the capital, Peckham hasn't lost its intrinsic grit and creative intensity.

"Its culture is made as much by the weave salons and three-for-a-pound plantain market stalls as it is by the rooftop bars and world-renowned art scene."

Funds raised will help cover organising costs like flyers, signage, insurance and St John's Ambulance first aiders throughout the weekend-long event.

This year's festival is scheduled to run from September 14-16.

T IS two years since my friend Jo Cox was brutally murdered by a right wing fanatic as she attended an advice surgery in her constituency.

Jo’s death had a profound effect on many people.

Last weekend we celebrated ‘Great Get Together’ events across Southwark (pictured). These events honour Jo and continue her work tackling loneliness and exclusion in our society. Thank you so much to everyone who organised, attended and celebrated Jo’s words that ‘We have more in common than that which divides us’ – especially to the BOST team who facilitated an even bigger Get Together than last year, bringing thousands out to Flat Iron Square and Union Street.

I choose to remember the person Jo was and the warmth, energy and love she brought to everyone she met and in all her work. Jo’s enthusiasm and infectious laughter always cheered everyone up at Westminster.

Her family have been so amazingly strong in the past two years. It was great to see her sister Kim at the Marlborough Sports Garden in Southwark last week where £20 million was announced for the Jo Cox Foundation to provide more projects to tackle loneliness and expand Jo’s legacy further.

Sadly, Southwark has lost 292 police officers and 120 PCSOs under the Coalition and current Government and the Met has its lowest number of officers across London for over fifteen years.

The police simply do not have the resources to prevent and investigate all crime and we are seeing that reflected in the audacity of some attacks, as well as the massive fall in cases taken

to court.

This is simply unacceptable. It is essential the Government wakes up to the damage it has done and reverses cuts to ensure Southwark is the safe, strong community we all love.

I am sure many of you are watching the World Cup and cheering England on!

How first Aboriginal cricket team played historic match at the Oval

ON THURSDAY, June 7, 2018, Australia’s leading indigenous cricketers competed against the Surrey XI at the Oval.

The T20 game was a special one, held 150 years after Australia’s first team formed of Indigenous Australians came to England on a historic visit as part of the country’s first ever international sports tour - a landmark event in Australia’s sporting and cricketing history.

Colonial-era settlers had brought their love of the sport to the country, with clubs first being established in cities from the 1850s onwards in towns across the country.

The original Aboriginal team was made up of stockmen and station hands who learned to play on the cattle stations where they worked.

All thirteen were from the Western District of Victoria, and were members of three Aboriginal groups – the Jardwadjali, Gunditjmara and Wotjobaluk.

After successful games against other Australian teams drawing big crowds, the idea of a foreign tour was mooted and gathered momentum.

With coaching from Charles Lawrence, an ex-all England player, who raised the funds for travel, the team arrived in England in May, 1868.

Until October the same year, they played 47 matches against amateur teams, winning fourteen, losing fourteen, and drawing nineteen, and surprising commentators with their obvious talent.

The players began their visit to the UK with an innings defeat to Surrey at the Oval on May 25, 1868.

They returned twice more to the Oval with a drawn match in September and a nine-wicket defeat in October, the final match of the tour.

The team in February, 1867 (main); and a drawing of the first team in 1866

bowled 1877 overs, 831 of which were maidens; and took 245 wickets. He also achieved four stumpings while playing as wicket-keeper.

His team mate Ungunjinanuke, also known as ‘Dick a Dick’, entertained the audience by using his club and shield to dodge cricket balls hurled at him by volunteers.

The tour became a talking point for the press and public in race relations and the ‘civilising role’ of sports like cricket across the British Empire.

The Times described the Aboriginal players as ‘the conquered natives of a

Unaarriminm, however, continued to play cricket and represented Victoria against a touring England side in 1879, top scoring with 36 in the second innings and today, a Johnny Mullagh memorial trophy is named in his honour, and the Johnny Mullagh Cricket Centre in Harrow, Victoria.

This year’s tour saw thirteen male players proudly represent each of the pioneering cricketers from 1868, displaying their names on the back of

their kit.

They were joined by the women’s indigenous team – who, in 2018, became the first female indigenous team to tour abroad.

In the run up to 2018’s match, Surrey chief executive Richard Gould said: “The opportunity to host this special touring side and pay tribute to one of the great days in the history of our ground, on the 150th anniversary of the first tour, is really exciting.”

And, on the day itself, one hundred and fifty years after the first tour, the Aboriginal XI finally avenged their 1868 defeat – winning by five runs in the T20 game.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

KINGSDALE FOUNDATION School from Dulwich was among eight local schools from London and West Sussex to compete in the Junior NBA Basketball England League finals at the University of East London last weekend.

The school, representing Phoenix Suns, defeated Bishop Challoner (Washington Wizards) 30-25 in the CoEd third/fourth place play-off to finish third.

Ahead of the finals, players got to meet NBA star Joe Harris from the Brooklyn Nets.

Kingsdale coach Chetan Barot said: “The best thing about the Junior NBA

is the way it’s organised. The structure of it is organised in terms of the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference, then you go into the playoffs and then the overall final. The kids get the kit and they love the whole package, they buy into the competition and they want to play in it.”

Dulwich 42 (25.1) lost to Malden Wanderers 48-1 (8) by 9 wickets

A WOEFUL batting display saw Dulwich dismissed for just 42 in their Travelbag Surrey Championship Division 2 match at Malden Wanderers, going down to defeat by nine wickets last weekend.

Dulwich were put in to bat, and got off to a poor start when Nick Hudson played on in the third over. Matt Marfani and Will Bancroft both fell to diving catches to reduce them to 12-3 after eight.

Salaar Waqar dug in while skipper Ed Stolle scored freely at the other end. But any hopes that the opening bowlers might give way to something easier were soon dispelled as slow left-armer Kevin Boudville took a wicket in each of his first two overs, catching Waqar off his own bowling and having Stolle stumped down the leg side. The captain had made 25 off 37 balls, and his dismissal reduced Dulwich to 32-5.

seemed to induce collective suicide as the last five wickets went down in 5.1 overs for just a single run. Boudville finished with four wickets for two runs in seven overs, while James Rimmer took three for eight off 5.1.

The Junior NBA Basketball England League, which is set to expand from five to sixteen leagues by the year 2021, aims to help grow and improve the youth basketball experience for players, coaches and parents. Lionesses lose Robe to Liverpool

MILLWALL LIONESSES defender Leighanne Robe has departed for Liverpool Ladies ahead of the new Women's Super League season.

The 24-year-old came through the ranks with Arsenal before playing for Watford for two years and joining second-tier Millwall in January 2016.

She helped the Lionesses to third place in Super League 2 last season.

The Lionesses had already lost manager Lee Burch to Yeovil.

Robe said: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining the club and I'm really looking forward to working alongside Neil Redfearn.”

Redfearn, a former player for Charlton and manager of Leeds United men’s side, added: “Leighanne is a quality, tough-tackling defender who is also a real leader.”

Bermondsey’s Chris Kongo predicts ‘brutal loss’ for opponent

CHRIS KONGO is promising a “brutal” win over his next opponent when he fights at York Hall this Saturday.

Bermondsey’s ‘2Slick’ faces Sam Omidi in Bethnal Green as he aims to extend his record to 9-0.

Kongo, 25, caught the eye when he defeated Serge Ambomo at the 02 Arena in Greenwich in March.

And he is determined to dispatch Omidi as he prepares under new coach Jimmy Mac. “Training is going well, grafting as usual and getting the rounds in sparring. I’m training with Jimmy Mac now and it’s all going well,” Kongo said.

“I’m always ready. He’s a durable guy but a few of my people have stopped him. He’s about to take another ‘L’ and this one will be brutal.

“After I get Sam Omidi out of the way I’m looking to step up again. I’m looking at Southern Area, English, British [titles]. Wherever, let’s go, I’m ready.

“Boxing is a business and you have to choose your coach wisely, choose someone that’s really going to guide you.

“I picked someone that’s got experience, someone that’s been there.

MILLWALL’S training ground on Monday morning was filled with the sound of players greeting each other after their seven-week summer break.

One was being teased about his new WhatsApp profile picture after getting married after the end of the season.

New boy Murray Wallace knocked on the front door with his boots and wash bag and enquired where he should go.

As you would expect the atmosphere was one of excitement and anticipation.

Then the hard work started.

The mercury tipped 30 degrees in the afternoon, when the squad stepped onto the grass for the first time in pre-season.

This isn’t like 30 years ago when players came back to sweat off beer guts by doing endless laps and running up and down hills.

In 2018, professionals are expected to return in close to top shape to enable coaches to start doing ball work from day one.

Millwall’s sports science and medical department now employ twelve staff, and players’ every need is taken care of through long days involving gym work and double sessions.

News was at Calmont Road on Monday to talk to the Lions’ head of sports science Laurence Bloom (below) to get an insight into what players can expect ahead of and after the big kick-off on August 4.

SN: The players get to enjoy a long break, what’s the summer like for the backroom fitness and medical staff?

LB: As soon as one season finishes you’re always thinking and preparing for the next one.

For the players, they’ve had seven weeks off which is a longer break than they had in previous seasons.

It’s probably needed this year.

The way their summer works is they get three weeks of total rest and recovery time when they don’t have anything structured to follow. It’s time for them to switch off and mentally and physically recover, spend time with their families.

They then have four weeks of a structured programme. It’s progressive each week building back up to what they will be doing

pre-season.

Some of them will follow it more than others. Some players, especially the older ones, will have some of their own routines.

But the players know when they come back it’s all about physical

testing and if they’ve not done what they needed to do or didn’t follow the programme, they’re going to come unstuck.

Most players are pretty self-motivated these days and good at coming back in good nick.

SN: It seems like it’s changed a lot compared to a couple of decades ago.

LB: It has changed more recently. Going back a number of years it was seen as a time to come back from the summer break to lose weight and get fit.

For us now it’s about getting the players football fit. We want them coming back in good condition so the gaffer can work on football conditioning and tactical work much earlier as opposed to spending time getting them to lose weight.

A lot of stuff we do now is geared towards working with the ball as opposed to building up base fitness, which we expect them to have.

SN: It’s the first week back. What is the

plan for the squad over the first few days?

LB: Monday is predominantly gymbased testing in the morning. We look at body fats, movement, how well they’re functioning, flexibility testing. They have concussion testing and some other screening with the physio. It’s a full health check first thing.

The concussion testing is led by the doctor. They complete an online memory reaction test to establish a baseline for the season. So if they do get concussion during the season it’s a test they have to complete and achieve a certain score in order to clear them. It’s a part of returnto-training protocol/return-to-play protocol that you use after a concussion.

It’s quite important.

SN: Everything is measured these days, so presumably gone are the days of players trying to cut corners?

LB: Every session we do, particularly on the grass, players are wearing GPS units [to track distance covered] and heart-rate monitors. We’re looking at the key metrics on a day-to-day basis. We look at how far they’ve run, what speeds they’ve run at, how many high-intensity runs they’ve done, sprint distances, high-

intensity efforts.

We plan our week around certain training emphasis. We look at different GPS metrics on different days depending on what outcomes we’re looking for. We track that weekly and monthly.

If it’s a tactical session we’re not looking so much at physical outputs. On a Thursday, for example, leading into a game, the gaffer will be doing tactical work. We feed it back to him if we’re doing slightly too much in a session.

SN: How much of an input does Neil Harris have with the science/medical teams?

LB: He’s very forward-thinking and buys into what we do, he’s very interested in the data. Obviously we break it down, we don’t show him everything, only what we think is key.

It’s about an integrated approach. It’s about understanding what the manager wants and what the coaching staff want to see within training, and then for us to put the physical parameters to that. It’s about working together, not us dictating to them.

SN: How many calories and litres of fluid are players taking in during high workload days?

LB: This week we were in for the hottest week of the year. In our meeting on Monday morning we spoke about player hydration and nutrition. We have to make sure players are not dehydrated in sessions because that’s going to affect their performance levels.

If we’re doing double sessions then players could be getting through five or six litres per day. They’re looked after well here at the training ground. They come in and have breakfast. Post-morning session lunch is provided for them, high in protein and carbohydrates.

If we have a double session there will be food again after that along with recovery.

During the season you could have players going through four or five thousand calories a day [2,500 is the average for a nonprofessional-sports male to maintain weight] on heavy days. We have to be careful not to give them too much or they start gaining weight.

But this week they’ll be burning a lot of calories so they’ll need to replace them.

SN: Fred Onyedinma and Steve Morison are at either end of the age scale. How will their training differ?

LB: We do try to manage players individually in pre-season and throughout the season. Pre-season is a little bit different because the manager wants time for everyone on the training pitch, he doesn’t want us to be pulling anyone out of training.

Once we get to the season, someone like Steve, when we’re doing a Tuesday session, we might have to reduce his training load.

Whereas someone like Fred if he hasn’t played at the weekend is doing supplementary conditioning work around his game, so it would be individualised for him.

SN: They go to Portugal in July where there will be multiple daily sessions.

That’s something that has gone well in recent years.

conditioning day we make sure we get enough overload [putting the body under more stress than it is used to]. If it’s a recovery day we make sure we’re not doing too much. It’s important to find that balance, and communication is key to that.

We have meetings every morning. We discuss what the gaffer wants and what we want. It works really well.

SN: Neil changed fitness coaches two years ago with you coming in. What are his demands of you?

LB: Neil wants somebody to work very closely with him and somebody who can work with the players and motivate the players to get what we want from them physically.

Over the last two years since I’ve come in we’re going in the right direction in our performance levels and our injury record.

We’re achieving what we want at the moment, but you never stop, you’re always trying to move forward and improve.

We want to get better. That’s something we discussed over the summer. What do we need to do to improve physically, technically, tactically, psychologically?

They are constant conversations. The club is very forward-thinking.

the growth of the club and our department over the last two years. We’re in a good place at the moment.

SN: We hear a lot about ‘marginal gains in cycling. How does that apply in football?

LB: There are marginal gains but they are different sports, you’re working purely individually in cycling. You’re talking about a second or two being the difference between winning and losing.

In football there are marginal gains and it’s about trying to find that. But there’s more to it, it’s not just a pure science in football, there are lots of other factors to consider.

From our point of view it’s how can we get small percentages, whether that’s trying to make the players five per cent fitter, increasing recovery times when you’re playing three times a week, etc.

Last year, for instance, we brought the cryotherapy chamber [use of extreme cold to help recovery] in to maximise recovery between games. When you’ve got a small squad it’s key that player availability is as good as it can get. We’re trying to give the manager the opportunity to pick his best team as often as he can throughout the season. It’s pretty critical that we keep the

LB: We’ve changed the way we do it slightly over the last couple of years. We used to go out slightly earlier to our training camp and use that to build fitness early on.

But what we found was the heat was a bit too much, we ended up having to sacrifice training sessions and didn’t get the intensity in training we wanted.

So we decided to stay here for the first few weeks, get the players up to the fitness levels we want, then go out there for more of a game schedule.

They then start to play a little bit longer, an hour to 75 minutes. That’s then about building up their match minutes and their match fitness.

Murray: ‘I want to break into team as soon as possible’

MURRAY WALLACE remembers not getting a “second’s peace” when he played against Millwall – as he outlined his determination to claim a firstteam place with his new side.

Wallace completed his move to the Lions last week and was in for his first day of pre-season training on Monday when he met his new team-mates.

Wallace, 25, played four times against Millwall for Scunthorpe, helping his side keep three clean sheets.

In the fourth game, however, Lions front duo Steve Morison (twice) and Lee Gregory scored to send Millwall through to the League One play-off final and leave Wallace devastated.

There was more play-off disappointment this year when the Iron again lost in the semi-finals to the team that would win promotion.

Neil Harris and head of recruitment Alex Aldridge watched Wallace in action against Rotherham in the first leg of their semi-final in May, before Scunthorpe lost the second leg.

Wallace knew there was interest from clubs, but he was fully focused on the play-off campaign.

“There were a lot of whispers that clubs were watching, but you’re always going to get rumours in football that this side or that side are after you. You’ve just got to put that out of your mind until there is something concrete,” Wallace said.

“I remember the two play-off games we had, I’ve played at The Den a few times for the away team. Obviously it’s a hard place to go to. They were a really hardworking team and I’m delighted to be part of that environment now.

“You don’t get a second’s peace against the front two, they chase down everything. Millwall were organised and disciplined and it was hard to break them down, let alone keep clean sheets against them.

"After that second leg I was massively disappointed. We all wanted to go to the Championship. It wasn’t something I was thinking about after the game but of course I had aspirations to play at a higher

level than League One. “We tried the next year and it was a similar outcome so for me it felt like it was the right time to move on.

“It doesn’t get an easier. Maybe we didn’t have as strong a season. The season before we were up around the automatic places but last season we were in the play-off spots all year.

“It still hurts no matter what stage you lose at.”

Wallace, who can play at centreback or left-back, met Harris after Scunthorpe’s season ended.

Harris made a presentation to Wallace, and the former Falkirk and Huddersfield defender was impressed with what he saw.

“He just shows what they’re looking for, the reasons they identified me as someone who could come in and fit in,” Wallace explained. “There were some clips of how I play and how Millwall play. He got his message across what he wants.

“The fans on social media have been telling me to just give 100 per cent.

The manager as well said, ‘give it everything and you’ll do well’.

“Fans here like a tackle. I’m buzzing for that because as a defender you don’t get a lot of chances to score.

You do get the chance for plenty of tackles and I enjoy that.”

Wallace knows it won’t be easy to break into the team, with Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper such a strong central defensive partnership.

But the Scot is ready for the challenge.

He said: “I want to break into the team as quickly as possible. The reason I left the Championship before to go to League One was to play regular football. That has developed me. It was the right thing to do and that’s something I want to continue. “[Hutchinson and Cooper] did so well towards the end of last season and they have a good partnership. But I’m here to give them competition and to break into the team.

“I played quite a lot of games leftback last season and the manager here said to me it’s good that I can play a couple of positions. I’ll play wherever.

“It was a big aim to get into the Championship to have a chance of catching the eye internationally.”

SN: Finally, do you get nervous watching them in action, the risk of injury, players tiring and so on?

LB: The first game of the season you’re always a little bit pensive, you’re hoping all your hard work over the six weeks building up to it comes together.

From our point of view you’re always worried about soft-tissue injuries, that’s always one that we pride ourselves on avoiding. If a player gets an injury you take it personally and you start looking into everything with a fine tooth comb.

You want a good performance and good result, and ultimately for everyone to come through it and keep building them up throughout the season.

NEIL HARRIS has revealed that Millwall have had discussions with “top Premier League clubs” over the potential loan availability of some of their most promising young players.

Harris’ work with the Lions is known to be admired by several Premier League managers, who see Millwall as a club that nurtures and develops young players.

Harris, however, insisted that the club would “not be held to ransom” over any deal. Last summer Millwall were

offered a young Premier League player on loan, but his parent club wanted a guarantee that he would start a certain percentage of games.

Harris said at the time: “I won’t commit to that, disrespecting my dressing room by bringing a young lad in who hasn’t played first-team football and putting him on a pedestal.”

Millwall’s most famous ex-loan player is Harry Kane, who was just eighteen when he moved south of the river. He won the club’s young player of the year award in 2011-12 and said his time in south Bermondsey was crucial to his development. Tottenham striker Kane is currently one of the stars of the World Cup in Russia.

The majority of the members of Gareth Southgate’s squad benefitted from loan moves in the lower leagues before establishing themselves in the Premier League.

And it is a market that Millwall could be active in this summer as they look to strengthen their squad.

“There can be real positives to those kinds of loans,” Harris said. “I’ve always been very honest in my assessment and my wording that if there is a player with a Premier League club that needs to drop down to get experience and that player can come in to get experience and add value and quality to us, then I’ve got no hesitation doing it.

“But it has to be on our terms. I’ve

had some really good conversations personally or via the recruitment department with top Premier League clubs, a lot of Premier League clubs, that would like to send players to us.

“But I won’t be held to ransom by anybody.

“If we can work with big clubs to make our squad better I’ve got no problem with that. I’d embrace it for the squad and also for the coaching staff to be able to work with top young players.

“It has to be the right players at the right time for us.”

Meanwhile, Harris this week signed a new long-term deal with the club.

Defender Byron Webster agreed a new one-year contract.

Wallace kept an eye on the Lions’ results last season and he was impressed with the number of clean sheets Neil Harris’ side kept.

Millwall are again rated one of the favourites to be involved in a relegation battle next season by the bookies.

And the likes of Nottingham Forest and Stoke City have already splashed fees of £10million-plus on recruits as they aim to build squads to challenge for promotion.

Millwall were within two games of clinching a place in the play-offs last season, and Wallace is looking forward to being part of a side that aims to surprise a few of the big guns again in the next campaign.

“These are the games you want to be involved. The teams coming down from the Premier League have a lot of money to spend, and there are plenty more teams in the Championship that will give it a right go this season throwing Premier League money about,” Wallace said.

“You think that might give them a big advantage but sometimes it doesn’t work like that. Teams spend big and it can backfire on them.

“Millwall keeping so many clean sheets and going unbeaten for so long caught the eye, and it was interesting to see them sneaking up the table.

They caught the attention of a lot of people.

“Personally I’d prefer to be the underdog. I like when other teams start thinking they’ve got a good chance against us because that sets it up to go prove people wrong.”
