A ROTHERHITHE mum is launching self-defence classes for residents who are “too afraid to leave their house” after a double stabbing.

Stephanie Jannati, 34, who runs Bootcamp SE16, decided to launch the sessions as a “direct

response” to a man and woman being stabbed in the hand during a mugging in Stave Hill Ecological Park on Friday, June 1.

The mother of two, who was herself the victim of a mugging in Canada Water in 2010, said other mums in the area were becoming too afraid to go into Russia Dock Woodland and the park alone.

How should we remember Barry Albin-Dyer?

t's hard neatly to summarise what role funeral director Barry Albin-Dyer played in the close-knit communities of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe. Hard because he did so much.

He was a figurehead in the community for sure; he placed his funeral directors at the heart of the area.

He took care of so many local people and families in their time of grief and need; there cannot be many members of the long-standing community who have not had some connection with Albins.

He was also on the board of Fisher FC and once even owned this paper, saving it when its founder died suddenly. He did it to save a community paper.

People lined the streets at his funeral. Screens had to be erected outside Holy Trinity Church in Dockhead so that everyone could pay their respects to the man and to his family.

And he was not only a pivotal part of the community. He set up Albin's International Repatriation Service, bringing home every member of the armed forces killed in active duty in recent years to the chapel of rest in Rotherhithe. So it is only right that his name is remembered suitably. There was a local campaign to get a new park built on Fisher FC's old ground named after him but the council decided to call it Mayflower park after the ship, because of its historic connection to the area. It offered to name a stand at Fisher's new ground after Barry, but his involvement with the club had ended by then.

Bermondsey and Rotherhithe are changing at a quick rate. It's important to hold on to the past and remember pivotal local figures as they are an anchor for the local community. They sustain a sense of identity and pride. Barry's sons Simon and Jon Dyer are asking the community to come up with suggestions for the most fitting place and memorial for their dad. A BAT stuck inside a loudspeaker has been rescued by the RSPCA with help from a curious dog, its owner, a bat expert and the fire brigade.

A SYDENHAM woman is to appear in a special over 50s edition of ITV dating show Take Me Out this weekend.

Fifty-seven-year-old Valletta will appear in the June 9 episode, which will feature three older gentlemen who will attempt to win a date with one of 30 single older ladies.

“Going through the day was quite fun,” Valletta said. “I got to meet women from all across the country.

One or two of the other ladies and I had a lot in common, and we kept in touch.

“That was the best part: everything running up to the filming.”

On the Paddy McGuiness hosted show the women are part of a panel called the “flirty 30,” who each stand underneath a light.

As the show progresses, the flirty 30 can indicate they have lost interest in the eligible man by turning off their light.

“It wasn’t really nerve-wracking, since we were so busy having fun,” Valletta, a social work student, said.

“Paddy and the rest of the crew

made us feel quite comfortable.”

“We’re over 50, but we aren’t dead yet,” Valletta said. “We’re still here, and we can still have fun like the

youngsters!”

The over 50s episode of Take Me Out will air on June 9, at 8pm on ITV.

The RSPCA were called out to Crystal Palace Park on Saturday, June 2, after a dog alerted its owner to the creature trapped inside an unused tower speaker at the park’s amphitheatre.

The bat was eventually set free, but not without help from a bat expert and the fire brigade to scale the ten-foot-high boombox.

RSPCA Inspector Rebecca Phillips said: “This was my first bat rescue so it was super exciting! When I first saw the little brown creature, I was amazed he had been spotted at all, he was so small and hard to see.

“Boris - as we called him had somehow got himself trapped between two sheets of mesh and was hanging upsidedown from it. The dog-owner told me that when he had tried to loosen the mesh to stop it from squashing the bat, the pipistrelle squeaked at him.

“The speaker was really solidlybuilt, welded closed, and about ten foot high, so I knew I’d need help.

“Bat expert Roger Branton was able to join me, and soon after, on our request, the fire service arrived.

“They used the dog-walker’s ladder to scale the speaker and used my bolt

cutters to cut off the chain and padlock which secured it.

“After sawing through the inside wood panels and mesh netting, they handed over to Roger, who, wearing protective gloves specially made for handling bats, managed to gently take Boris out.

“He then took the bat back to his house for rehabilitation. On Sunday evening, he was able to release the little guy back into the wild, close but not too close - to where we found him.

“My thanks go to the alert dogwalker, the fire service and bat expert Roger Branton, for helping to make this amazing rescue have a happy ending.”

London Bridge byelection next week

LONDON BRIDGE: A by-election will be held in London Bridge and West Bermondsey ward on Thursday, June 14, after it was cancelled following the death of a candidate last month.

The election was unable to go ahead on May 3 after Conservative candidate Toby Eckersley sadly died unexpectedly aged 76.

Tributes flooded in for the former Dulwich Village politician after his death, who was described as a “quintessential Englishman” and praised for his commitment and drive to serving his constituents.

Voters in London Bridge and West Bermondsey must go to their allocated polling station – unless they have chosen to vote by post or proxy – between 7am and 10pm on Thursday, June 14.

The mother of two, who was herself the victim of a mugging in Canada Water in 2010, said other mums in the area were becoming too afraid to go into Russia Dock Woodland and the park alone.

“I’ve just had my second baby and we go into this woodland to have picnics. I walk through there on my own to meet my clients, so I’m scared now and my

husband doesn’t want me to walk there on my own,” she told the News.

“I know of mums saying they are too scared to leave their house now and my clients are young, single professionals who moved to this area because it’s up and coming and it’s nice and now this is all happening.

“Obviously social media is showing the volume of things that are happening in this area – and before social media these things did happen and probably to a similar volume – but now there’s more awareness and more people are scared, especially in situations like this.”

McFetridge, of Druid Street, was arrested and later charged with putting a person in fear of violence and criminal damage, which he denied.

Following a trial, he was convicted of the offences and on May 18 he appeared before Blackfriars Crown Court, where he was sentenced to 30 months behind bars.

He was also handed a five-year restraining order and a Criminal Behaviour Order banning him from Surrey Quays station for five years.

Detective Constable Richard Rowe, from British Transport Police, said: “For no reason at all, McFetridge targeted this member of staff, leaving his victim

fearing for their life.

“We will not tolerate the abuse of rail staff for simply doing their jobs and the sentence handed to McFetridge shows the courts take an equally dim view of such behaviour.”

Siwan Hayward, head of transport policing, added: “Our staff work extremely hard assisting customers and ensuring the network is a safe environment for all.

“Like everyone, they have the right to go about their job without fear or intimidation.

“The sentence handed down to McFetridge reflects the seriousness of his actions and that we do not tolerate, in any way, abuse against our staff.”

Sal Nazeer, who was once a bodyguard for an Indian popstar and who has qualifications in various martial arts, has designed a five-week self-defence course for residents, which will start with a free 90-minute taster session at Stave Hill Ecological Park on June 16.

“What’s different about this is he goes through conflict management and takes you through a situation and you learn techniques on how to talk to people and how to respond to them – because that’s where a lot of people get shy – and what to expect because a lot of people go into a fight or flight situation,” said Stephanie.

“The number one rule is to run but you can’t do that if you have kids with you.

“If this can give people the sense of security or instil a little bit of confidence in them at least it’s

something someone is doing in the area and there’s no obligation to sign up for the course.”

At about 11am on Friday, June 1, two women with children were approached by a pair of men in Stave Hill Ecological Park.

One of the men tried to snatch a handbag belonging to one of the women, who was stabbed in the hand during the struggle before he stole a rose gold iPhone 7.

He then snatched an iPhone belonging to the second woman and stabbed a male passer-by when he tried to intervene.

The man and woman were taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries and were both discharged the same day.

Police said Russia Dock Woodland and Stave Hill Ecological Park were both priority patrol areas for the local neighbourhood teams.

“There will be increased police patrols of the area over the next few weeks in the run up to the summer holidays, particularly around school start and finish times, to reassure residents and deal with any issues,” Inspector Owen Pyle told the News.

“We are aware that there is no quick fix to the knife crime problem and as such will be undertaking joint work with the council over the coming months, putting in place longer term strategies to tackle this.

“We would encourage the community to report all incidents or suspicious behaviour to police; even if the information seems insignificant, it may be the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle for us.”

One of the suspects is described as a white male, about 20 years in age, 5ft10, and unshaven.

A BERMONDSEY man has been jailed for a campaign of fear against a rail worker at Surrey Quays station.

Patrick McFetridge, 37, threatened and intimidated the worker at the station nine times between November 2017 and February 2018, including racially abusing them, swearing at them and making threats to kill.

During his three-month scare campaign, McFetridge told the member of staff he would cut their face and come after their family.

LONDON BRIDGE TERROR ATTACKS - REMEMBERING ONE YEAR ON

THERESA MAY, Jeremy Corbyn and Sadiq Khan held a minute's silence in Southwark on Sunday in remembrance of the victims of the London Bridge terror attack.

Sunday marked the one year anniversary of the attack of June 3, 2017, which saw three armed terrorists drive into pedestrians on London Bridge before entering Borough Market and attacking people at random with knives.

Eight people were killed that night and dozens more injured, including brave members of the emergency services, both on and off duty.

Canadian Christine Archibald, 30, and Australians Kirsty Boden, 28, and Sara Zelenak, 21, were killed in the attack.

Frenchmen Xavier Thomas, 45, Sebastien Belanger, 36, and Alexandre Pigeard, 26, also died, as did Spaniard Ignacio Echeverría, 39, and 32-year-old James McMullan, who lived in Hackney.

The attackers Khuram Butt, 27, Rachid Redouane, 30, and Youssef Zaghba, 22, were shot dead by police within eight minutes of the first emergency call.

At 3pm on Sunday a special commemoration service was held at Southwark Cathedral for those affected by last year's events, and their families. At the private ceremony, candles were lit for each person who died that night, and one for all who were harmed.

An olive tree, described as a "tree of healing", was then planted in the cathedral grounds using compost made from floral tributes left on London Bridge in the aftermath of the attack.

‘LION OF London Bridge’ Roy Larner says he is still haunted by last year’s terror attack and has not regained full use of one of his arms.

Prime Minister Theresa May joined the Bishop of Southwark Christopher Chessun, as they walked past crowds of hundreds of well-wishers who had gathered carrying flowers and waving 'London United' placards.

They assembled at the Southwark Needle monument with Jeremy Corbyn, home secretary Sajid Javid, and his Labour shadow minister Diane Abbott, and council leader Peter John, who introduced the national minute’s silence.

In a formal statement published on the anniversary, Theresa May said: "The many stories of courage demonstrated that night will always stay with me - such as Ignacio Echeverria, who died after confronting the terrorists with the only thing he had, his skateboard, and Geoff Ho, who spent almost two weeks in hospital after being stabbed in the neck as he shielded his friends.”

Families of the eight people who died, people who were injured, first responders, and members of the public were invited to lay their flowers at the Southwark Needle

monument, which will be left in place for several days so the public can also pay their respects.

Throughout the weekend a 'London United Book of Hope' has been in place in Southwark Cathedral, where people can leave messages of condolence and hope.

On Tuesday June 19, the book will return to City Hall, as part of a series of events to mark the anniversaries of each of the four terror attacks that hit London last year.

As the News reported last week PC Wayne Marques, who fought all three attackers with just his baton and was left temporarily blinded in one eye, has been honoured with a permanent tribute in Southwark Cathedral in the form of a hand-carved stone corbel.

Peckham police’s PC Jim Cole, who was one of the first officers on the scene and helped dozens of people to safety in a basement bar, tweeted: “I am thinking a lot tonight about what I saw 12 months ago at #BoroughMarket. Thinking of the people killed, injured, and the tremendous bravery of the men and women I work with who put themselves at risk to save others. #Proud #LondonUnited #LondonBridge.

The 48 year old was hailed a hero and earned the title ‘the Lion of London Bridge’ after shouting ‘F**k you, I’m Millwall’ while fighting off three terrorists wielding knives in Borough Market.

The Lions fan was stabbed in the head, arms, back and front after taking on the attackers unarmed in the Black & Blue bar and restaurant on June 3 last year.

Speaking to the News after the anniversary of the terror attack on Sunday, Mr Larner said it “has been very hard” and that he still gets anxious in crowded places and is unable to work.

“All these things take time I suppose and it will take time for me to get back to normal,” said the father of one.

“Those dark winter months after the attack were really hard for me but I’m getting counselling every fortnight now and that’s helpful.

“It’s been very hard – even the football wasn’t enjoyable for me because the crowds were getting bigger and it’s the same when I go out to the pub now and it’s a bit noisy so I go somewhere quieter.

“The thunder and lightning storms last week brought back memories of the gunfire.”

Mr Larner, who is currently staying with friends outside of London, was

inundated with job offers when he came out of hospital last year but he says he has been set back by his injuries.

“I won’t be able to work now because my arm is just working at 50 per cent,” he said.

“The stitches on my neck and hands have healed quite nicely.”

The Lions fan said he had “a few tears in my eyes” during a remembrance service at Southwark Cathedral on Sunday.

“The families of the eight victims must have been going through hell this last year,” he said. “At least I’m still here.

“I just hope this never happens to anyone else anywhere.”

A POLICE officer hailed a hero after fighting off three extremists during last year’s London Bridge terrorist attack hopes to return to work next month.

PC Wayne Marques, 38, was left temporarily blinded in one eye after taking on the terrorists armed only with his baton on June 3.

Eight people were killed and many more injured after the terrorists drove a van into people on London Bridge before stabbing revellers in Borough Market.

Speaking a year on, PC Marques, who works for the British Transport Police, said he had made "significant progress since that night" and planned to return to work in July.

"I'm doing well," he said. "I’m much more independent, much more able, I’m standing, I’m walking, I’m able to socialise again, see family and friends.

"In terms of work, at the moment, the intention is for me to come back to work in July.

"I do know the longer you are out, the harder it can be to get back in and it’s a job that I enjoy; it’s who I am, to be honest.

"Now saying that and then convincing Ma and Pops and partner

that it’s the right thing to do is a completely different ballgame."

PC Marques, from South Norwood, had been on duty when he heard about the attack on June 3.

Putting his own safety aside, he ran towards the three attackers . He said he was trying "not to plan too far ahead because you get setbacks" but that he was still working hard.

"I’m doing well with my training and my rehab at the moment," he said. "I’m currently in a 'run-walk' programme which is what I’m working through to continue to build myself up and the left side of my body up, to increase my running ability, because obviously I lost a lot of that since last year.

"And I’m just basically trying to get as much of me back as possible."

The police officer, who received an outpouring of support and messages from the public in the days and weeks after the attack, thanked the public for their continued support.

"The messages, there are too many to remember, but I made a point of reading as many as possible," he said.

"It’s been inspiring, it was overwhelming, it was encouraging.

"You go through these stages where you’re stuck in a bed and you’ve got this time to keep thinking about things…and then you get these messages from people who have just heard about you.”

AN AIR ambulance flight paramedic has told of the moment the emergency services first became aware of the unfolding London Bridge terror attack.

Bill Leaning was on duty on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at the emergency operations centre. As the flight paramedic says, “Our job is to find those small cohort of patients that we can make a difference to, so that we can send our team to where they will be best used.”

Bill says he first dispatched his team as if it were “any normal job, any normal job, and that’s what they thought they were being dispatched to.”

But it quickly became apparent that night was different: “The calls started to come in, and you start to see more and more, at the same location.

“You then get: car on the street, shots being fired, people being stabbed.

“You know that something more is going on. “You’re potentially putting your colleagues at risk but you stick to what you’re trained to do, your stomach flutters a bit, you sweat a little bit more and then you start to think about what you’re going to do.

“My job is to make sure that the patient gets the best of care but that the patient gets a team that can operate, can go to that patient, are safe, secure and can go home at the end of the night. That is my biggest responsibility.”

“I’m a lucky person to work with people who are driven, want to do the best for their patients.”

In the aftermath of the attack, the emergency service’s quick response was praised.

On the night of the attack, Bill dispatched five air ambulance medical teams to London Bridge.

The first call came in at 10.07pm, and within seven minutes the air ambulances paramedics were on the scene.

By 10.16pm the three armed attackers had been shot dead by police.

Thousands raised in Wonderwall Cup

THOUSANDS HAS been raised in support of terror attack victims after celebrities and emergency services workers battled it out in a charity football match at The Den.

The Wonderwall Cup, held at the stadium on Sunday, May 27, was organised by Millwall’s fan on the board Micky Simpson and Andy Pheby, a Lions fan in Manchester, to help those affected by the terror attacks in London and Manchester last year.

Celebrities including ex-footballers, musicians and TV personalities and members of London Ambulance Service and Manchester Ambulance Service went head-to-head during the charity event.

“The emergency services game probably had 400 to 500 people who turned out to support them and about 1,000 people in total were there watching,”.said Micky.

“The atmosphere was more of a good fun feeling rather than a feeling of sorrow; it was more about pride and the two cities coming together.

“Everyone who took part gave their time for free – from the celebrities, to the medical team, the Millwall staff and the photographers – we only had to pay for the stewards.”

Micky said he did not yet know the final amount raised but it was a “good few thousand”.

The money will go to smaller charities which support victims of terrorism and to the emergency services charities.

The Wonderwall Cup, organised with the help of Millwall fans Shane Pearson, based in Manchester, and Rosie Spearpoint, is expected to be held again next May.

FOR HALF of the grieving families of those killed a year ago in the London Bridge Terror Attacks, one of their first encounters with this country was with Bermondsey’s Albin’s funeral home.

The repatriation arm of this established firm was contacted within hours of the attacks.

On the Sunday after Saturday’s massacre Albin’s International Repatriation service was tasked with flying home four of the eight victims.

To mark the first anniversary since the terrorist attacks, owners Simon and Jon Dyer laid eight white roses in their memorial garden on the edge of Southwark Park.

The eight roses were laid at a tree special planted to remember the fallen soldiers who all pass through the gates of Albin’s, before they are taken to their respective homes.

“At the base of the tree we have laid stones to represent each soldier we have had to bring home from war-zones across the globe. We thought it a fitting place to put a rose for all eight victims of the London Bridge Terror Attacks,” Jon Dyer told the News.

Working with the consulates of each of the countries the four victims were from, Albin’s prepared and presented them for viewing for their grieving families in its chapel of rest, off Lower Road.

Some of the victims lay in Bermondsey, visited by the families, for up to two days before they were taken home.

This came just over a month after Albin’s conducted the funeral of PC

Keith Palmer, who was killed in the Westminster attack in March 2017. His funeral at Southwark Cathedral saw thousands of police officers line the route of the 2.6-mile cortege. Four other

people were killed in the attack and Albin’s on that occasion was also tasked with the repatriation of American tourist Kurt Cochran, who was on a holiday celebrating 25 years of marriage.

‘Widow shouldn’t have to pay for grave repair’ BERMONDSEY

A FUNERAL director has come to the defence of a widow who was told she would have to pay for repairs to her relatives’ grave, even though she did not cause the damage.

Kate Southion, 72, from Bermondsey, was told by the council that she would have to pay for her parents’ and brother’s grave to be repaired and that she should have got it insured after she found it partly smashed in Camberwell New Cemetery.

But Simon Dyer, of Bermondseybased Albin’s funeral directors, insists that he has never been told to advise families to insure a grave – and that he doesn’t know of anyone who ever has.

“The point is it’s not about insurance – it’s just wrong,” he told the News.

“As far as I’m concerned, that has been damaged by a piece of machinery and they should put it right for that poor woman – she’s been through enough.”

During a recent visit to her family’s grave, Mrs Southion found the granite headstone on which her brother’s

name is inscribed had been knocked over and part of the kerbstone surrounding the grave had been broken.

Mrs Southion’s mother, who died 25 years ago, and father, who died fifteen years ago, are both buried at the family plot, while her younger brother, who died of a brain

haemorrhage at the of 26, had his ashes scattered there in 1984.

The widow, whose other brother died last March on her birthday and whose husband of 52 years passed away in September, said she had spoken to other families who said they had never been advised about the insurance either.

“I haven’t got the money to fix this,” she said. “I’m a widow now and I’m living on a pension and for me to pay for that is ridiculous and I don’t see why I should have to.

“You could insure the gravestone but it would be astronomical because it’s a public place; it’s like having my jewellery insured and putting it the middle of a public car park and saying ‘you mustn’t touch that’.”

“Surely they are duty-bound to contact you to say the stone has been damaged,” she added.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, Southwark Cuncil’s cabinet member for environment, transport management and air quality, said: “I am very sorry to hear of Ms Southion’s distress in this matter and will be sure to ask the team to remind funeral directors that they need to stress the section of the memorial application form that advises grave owners of the need for insurance.”

12 hour dance-a-thon to get team to America

A TEAM of talented young dancers will take part in a dance-a-thon as a final fundraising drive to get them to a competition in America.

The youngsters, from Deborah Whelan Dance, will dance non-stop for a gruelling twelve hours this Sunday, June 10, as a final push to raise £10,000 so they can fly out to the North American Irish Dance Championships in Florida on June 28.

Over the last two weeks, three of the dancers won the open championships at the White Rose Feis in Doncaster.

Under-12 Maisie Ryan, under-13 Hannah Manners-Cidon, and under-16 Nancy Timon all won the title in their age category.

Local girl Nancy Timon also won the under-15 European Championship in Spain on May 27, and Maisie Ryan won the under-12 championships at this year's

Manchester Bee Memorial Feis on June 2.

The three dancers will be joined in Florida by sisters Mary-Kate Nealon and Aine Nealon, as well as Leah Macdonald and Caitlin Cole, where they will compete over five days.

The Docklands Settlement, in Rotherhithe, has generously donated its dance studio for the dance-a-thon this Sunday, from 8am to 8pm.

The venue runs a programme of activities for all ages and disabilities, including floristry for the elderly, disability football and disability zumba, tai chi for the visually impaired, and walking football for the elderly with dementia.

They also offer a number of classes for children from new born age to nineteen.

RESIDENTS HAVE signed a petition in protest against double yellow lines which they say, coupled with an extended permit parking zone, will take away “more than 100 parking spaces” in Rotherhithe.

Andy Hind, 60, collected 120 signatures for the petition after residents were left “horrified” by the decision to paint the lines around Rotherhithe, including in Rotherhithe Street, Railway Avenue, and Elephant Lane, where many residents park.

The civil engineer, who has lived in the area for 28 years, said the lines would result in the loss of 70 spaces used daily by residents without any issue for decades, and a further 30 or more would be lost due to the decision to also extend zone H parking permits.

“I think there’s been this lack of making sure all local residents were aware of this,” he said.

“I feel they’ve gone in there like a bull in a China shop without any leeway.

“When you go round St Mary’s Church there are all these lovely cobblestones and now they are putting down these garish double yellow lines; that whole nice quaint village atmosphere has just gone.”

Mr Hind said he believed the decision to paint the double yellow lines was made as an attempt to tackle the issue of commuters parking cars around Rotherhithe to use the Overground station – but that this would “just move the problem out”.

He added that the council previously suggested introducing a controlled parking zone in Railway Avenue, which residents rejected, and that he therefore could not understand why double yellow lines had removed all parking in the street if it would have been safe enough for cars to park in bays.

Another resident also suggested that the whole of Railway Avenue could

have been pedestrianised to make it wide enough for emergency vehicles to pass through, and that the section where cars have historically parked could have been moved over to replace the current footpath.

Helen Archer, 65, who has lived in the area for a year, said residents would struggle to carry their shopping home from their car and that they had not been given advice about where to park as an alternative.

“You want to be able to park within your community,” she said. “For me, you have to look at all the other things you could have done.”

In a letter to Councillor Ian Wingfield, who was then cabinet member for environment and the public realm but has since left the cabinet, residents also said they were concerned Isambard Street, which is used as a children’s play street, would be turned into a car park by displaced parking.

In response, Cllr Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for environment, transport management and air quality, told the News: “Given the difficulties that emergency vehicles would face on these streets, we have to prioritise safety over parking and unfortunately this area was not designed for the number of cars we see there today.

“Local residents have been consulted about a controlled parking zone with residents’ parking, but there was little support for the idea.

“We have therefore had to look at other ways to keep the streets safe.

“We published plans to introduce double yellow lines in the media, online and on every street in the area, and further notices were put up in addition to this.

“We will be keeping a close eye on the effect of the new parking restrictions on surrounding streets and we will consider changes if they become necessary.”

A FISHER football shirt and boxing vest will adorn the coffin of the man widely recognised as the backbone of the club, as he is laid to rest on Monday.

Les Rowe was matchmaker extraordinaire at the Fisher Downside Boxing Club in Druid Street Bermondsey. He was then manager, on the board and Fisher Athletic Football Club’s biggest fan.

The 83-year-old, who was Bermondsey born and bred, died just over two weeks ago after a short battle with bowel cancer.

His funeral at St James’s Church in Bermondsey is expected to draw hundreds of people.

One of his prodigies, Dennis Sharp, spoke to the News about Les, who never married: “We’d always say that he was married to the Fisher Club, which he was.”

After getting a name for himself as “one of the best matchmakers” in boxing in the 1950s and 1960s with people “screaming for tickets” to witness the contests he had organised, Les turned his attention to managing Fisher Athletic Football Club in Rotherhithe. He took it from obscurity to the southern leagues.

queues out the streets for his shows, people screaming for tickets.

“The atmospheres were electric. He would have all the top amateurs in the country, he had a great reputation.

“He was massively passionate, and we were great friends as well. People used to go down to his house and talk all day long about boxing.”

Dennis Sharp, now aged 64, first met Les as a ten-year-old ‘Downside boy’, the name given to those attending the youth club which houses Fisher boxing.

When Dennis was fifteen Les signed him up and got a team together from Bermondsey and Rotherhithe for Fisher Athletic Football Club.

Dennis ended up playing 720 games including playing in the FA Cup against Bristol City in the 1984/85 season. “We were all local mates and we’d say to Les

THIS WEEK marked the third anniversary of the death of muchloved funeral director Barry AlbinDyer and despite calls for a park to be named after him, no fixed memorial has been agreed.

This week his sons Simon and Jon Dyer told the News that they would like local people to decide a fitting place and memorial.

His premature death of brain cancer at 64-years of age saw a huge outpouring of grief in Bermondsey.

Local people lined the streets and special screens had to be erected outside Holy Trinity Church in Dockhead, Bermondsey, to allow people to watch his funeral, which included condolences to the family from the Queen and a reading from Margaret Thatcher’s son, Mark Thatcher.

Earlier in the procession a crowd of hundreds gathered at the Blue in Southwark Park Road, where Barry’s reading of the poem ‘Bermondsey my Bermondsey’ was played and doves

were released.

Apart from laying to rest thousands of local people, Barry created a memorial garden on the edge of Southwark Park to allow local people to come together and place ashes to their loved ones. On an international scale the grandfather-of-nine set up Albin’s International Repatriation Service (AIR), which has resulted in every member of the armed forces killed in active duty in recent years coming back to their chapel of rest, off Lower Road.

An avid Fisher FC supporter and on the club’s board, local people campaigned for a new park to be named after him on the site of the former ground. However, the council decided last September to name it Mayflower Park, to coincide with the Mayflower celebrations and offered to name the stand in Fisher‘s new ground after Barry instead.

As Barry was not involved and died before the new ground was built Simon

and Jon are asking all local people and those who campaigned for the park to come up with the most fitting place and memorial for their father.

‘I hear he is good player’ and he would go out and get him. There was no money, we all just wanted to play. I was the captain and I played more games than any other player in Fisher’s history from the age of fifteen until I was 32. We were like family, we loved Fisher and he, Les, was basically our dad. We are all still friends 30 to 40 years later. Les was a great man, a real gentleman and made us fantastic.”

Les left school to work like so many others on the docks in Mark Brown wharf, before running a succession of small businesses including kiosks, sandwich bars and a couriers. “He remained on the board of Fisher Football Club all his life and would try anything to fundraise and put money in himself,” Dennis said.

“Days before he died, when we were up at the hospital with him he said to us ‘as soon as I get out of here will someone take me down to Fisher?’, albeit in a wheelchair, he was very week by then.”

Les is being buried in his Fisher tie and Fisher coat. The funeral starts at 10am this Monday, June 11 at St James’s Church, Thurland Road, SE16. He is being laid to rest with his mother and father in Streatham Park cemetery and mourners are invited to celebrate his life at the Stanley Arms, Southwark Park Road, Bermondsey from 1.30pm.

olice are appealing for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage of Saturday’s double shooting in Peckham to come forward.

As the News reported online this week, officers and armed police were called to Wodehouse Avenue, SE5, at 7.56pm on Saturday, June 2 to reports of a shooting.

Two men were found suffering from gunshot wounds, including a 22-year-old widely reported to have been shot directly in the face.

The victim has been locally named locally as Femi Omosuyi, a semiprofessional boxer.

Video footage shared widely on social media showed passers-by trying to staunch the bleeding and comfort him as he screamed in agony until medical help arrived.

He was taken to hospital by air ambulance and received treatment, and his condition is now said to be 'non-life threatening'.

The other victim, a 25-year-old man, was not seriously injured.

A London Met spokesperson said: "At this early stage it is believed that the victims were sitting inside a vehicle at Wodehouse Avenue when they were attacked with shots being fired through the windows of the vehicle."

A trident investigation is on-going but as yet there have been no arrests.

DS Tom Walter from the trident and area crime command said: "We are appealing

in particular for anyone who has dashcam footage who was in Southampton Way, Commercial Way or Wodehouse Avenue to contact us as a matter of urgency.

“All information will be treated in the strictest confidence."

The shooting is Southwark’s second within a month, after a seventeen-year-old boy was shot dead on the Brandon Estate in Kennington in early May. Rhyhiem Ainsworth Barton was found with a gunshot injury on Warham Street on Saturday, May 5 and died shortly after.

Although his mother has maintained he was not a gang member, it has emerged that Barton was part of a ‘drill’ group

which posts aggressive rap videos under a locally known gang name, which has a rivalry with a Peckham-based group.

In videos posted online, the group based in Kennington brag about carrying Samurai swords and attacking their rivals.

In one video, called City of God, the group say they are ‘at war with the cops’, and Barton taunts: “how you gonna make it even?”

There have been no arrests in connection with Barton’s death and police have not suggested that his death is linked to the double shooting in Peckham.

According to the Met, at least 69 people have been killed in London in 2018 alone

as a violent crimewave hits the capital.

Last Friday two people sustained slash injuries intervening in an attempted Rotherhithe robbery, and man was arrested after a stabbing on the Old Kent Road.

DETECTIVE TACKLING SOUTHWARK GANGS

LAST MONTH, the News sat down with Detective Inspector Luke Williams, Southwark police’s gang lead, to find out how his team was tackling violent crime.

Just days earlier, 17-year-old Rhyhiem Barton had been shot dead, in a seeming execution, near his home on Kennington’s Brandon Estate.

Whereas gun crime sits with the Met’s specialist operation trident officers, boroughbased police forces still lead on tackling crime and gang activity within the capital’s boroughs.

DI Williams was keen to stress “the majority of our knife crime is not gang related. The majority is related to robbery offending.”

According to police figures, in December 2017,

robberies – thefts with the threat of violence, such as someone waving a knife on the street and taking your watch - were up by over a third.

To respond to this threat, a new crack force team was set up and started tackling violent robberies at the beginning of this year.

The numbers have reduced by 22% in the first four months of 2018 – but are still 12.8% higher than the same time last year.

And knife injuries to victims under the age of 25 are up – by 3.7%, though total knife crime has seen a reduction.

“Some of my staff were some of the first officers on the scene of the recent murder in Kennington and they don’t want to see more people die,” says Williams.

“They probably take at least five knives off the street a week, at an absolute minimum. We’re talking Rambo-style hunting knives that would absolutely cut you in half.”

But although most knife crime is robbery-related, gang violence is a huge issue.

“I’m not going to name the gangs - not because I don’t think everybody knows who they are - but because I don’t think it is right to publicise.

“They make take some sort of pleasure from the fact they’re mentioned in the papers.

“We’ve got some smaller gangs that we deal with and monitor, but there are two that cause significant concern - and they don’t get on with each other.”

Kennington, Walworth and Peckham are the borough’s gang hotspots, but Williams counters claims a postcode drugs war is driving the current violence: “In my experience it’s more that it’s an honour - thing that they’ve been disrespected.

“It’s social media. We have one gang who will go on YouTube, film a video and make derogatory comments or curse about the other gang and taunt them to do things. We see [the videos] go back and forth between the gangs.

It’s not just the under-25s at risk from youth violence, as his team have seen innocent bystanders caught up in attacks

including cases of mistaken identity.

“I’m under no illusions – drug crime fuels knife crime. However, there will be gangs that are involved in drugs and some of their violence happens as a result, but we also see the opposite of that.”

“We don’t want to lock people up. We want to divert these young kids away from criminality to do something different.

“When that doesn’t work or we get intelligence to say that somebody is dealing drugs, they’ve got a knife, then we robustly act and use all the methods available to us.”

Stop and search, surveillance and warrant applications are some of those methods, but his officers are restricted in how they can detain a suspect without bail.

“My personal view,” he explains, is that if we are stopping somebody with a knife and they have got previous involvement with knives and youth violence, we do everything we can to keep them in custody because that is the safest place for them.”

Ambulance service out of special measures

LONDON AMBULANCE Service has been taken out of special measures and commended for its response to last year’s terror attacks in London and the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

It was rated as ‘outstanding’ for being caring and ‘good’ overall by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following its most recent inspection.

It was previously rated ‘requires improvement’ after an inspection in February 2017 and had been in special

measures since 2015.

Professor Ted Baker, England’s chief inspector of hospitals, said the improvements made to leadership and staff were “especially commendable – and especially necessary – given the major incidents the trust has responded to over the past year, including terrorist attacks and the Grenfell Tower tragedy”.

London Ambulance Service chief executive Garrett Emmerson (pictured), who joined the trust in May last year, said: “I am delighted the dedication and hard work of staff throughout the service has been recognised by the CQC. “In particular, I want to thank staff for

continuing to provide outstanding care.

“The CQC again gave London Ambulance Service the highest possible rating for the care we give to patients and I am extremely proud our incredible frontline staff have been recognised in this way.”

Mr Emmerson said he hoped to see the trust rated ‘outstanding’ overall in two years’ time. “We know we still need to make improvements and we have been doing so since the inspection that put us into special measures back in 2015,” he said.

“We have made some big changes in how we operate, but I want us to improve

even further, with the aim of being rated ‘outstanding’ overall, in two years’ time.

“We want to be a world-class ambulance service for a world-class city and the news that we are no longer in special measures brings us much closer to realising that ambition.”

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan added: “This recognises the improvement in the service provided to Londoners by the trust over recent months. My thanks go to all of the staff at the London Ambulance Service who made this possible and who work tirelessly for Londoners every day.”

A MYSTERY surrounds the identity of a Nunhead man who left his entire legacy to a small Catholic charity.

The Latin Mass Society is desperately searching for anyone who knew John Edward Arnell, who is believed to have lived in St Asaph’s Court, St Asaph’s Road before he died in May 2017.

The News understands Mr Arnell was once a member of the Latin Mass Society, but the charity was taken aback by the size of the generous donation – the largest sum it has ever received – because he had not been involved with the organisation for several years.

The charity have said the figure was in excess of half a million pounds.

Stephen Moseling, the charity’s general manager, told the News he was trying to track down anyone who knew Mr Arnell to attend a requiem mass to be organised in his honour this summer.

“In 50 years, we’ve never received anything this large; we’re only a small charity,” he said.

“I’d like to be able to find friends or family of John so they can attend his requiem mass,” Mr Moseling continued.

“The council handled his death, and they were only able to find one very distant relative, who has remained uninvolved.”

Figure was ‘in excess of half a million pounds’

There is a record of a John Edward Arnell serving in the Royal Air Force in 1950. This would match up with the dates he was alive, yet there is no evidence he is the same man.

Mr Arnell was born on July 8, 1933 in Chichester, which would have made him seventeen when he was serving in the RAF, if the records refer to the same John Arnell.

The Latin Mass Society was contacted initially in December of 2017 about the legacy.

However, proceedings did not move quickly enough, and Arnell’s body was cremated in January of 2018.

His ashes were scattered at the crematorium, although it is preferred for a Catholic to be buried.

The possessions of Arnell’s flat were sold off, meaning that there are no clues left about his identity or who might have known him.

Mr Moseling contacted local Catholic churches and social services in Southwark, wrote a piece in the monthly publication of the Latin Mass Society, and sent letters to the residents in Arnell’s old

block of flats: all to no avail.

The Latin Mass Society is planning to hold Mr Arnell’s requiem mass in July or August, which would be an opportunity for his friends and family to celebrate his life and pray for his repose.

“I don’t want to say Southwark News is my last resort,” Mr Moseling said. “But all Catholics deserve a proper Christian funeral. He should be able to have someone there to pray for him.”

Catholic funerals consist of a requiem mass, where it is important for the body of the deceased to be present.

The Latin Mass Society is an association dedicated to the promotion of the traditional Latin liturgy.

“Leaving the legacy he did, John Arnell has allowed us to continue the work that we do,” Mr Moseling said. “He was clearly passionate about continuing traditional Latin services and the heritage

of the Latin language.”

The charity has purchased a new set of black mass vestments in Mr Arnell’s memory, and they are to be used for the first time in his requiem.

BUDDING CRICKETER GETS LIFE-CHANGING TREATMENT A teenager who was never expected to walk or talk is now in a national cricket team thanks to treatment he received at Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Elliot Brown, 17, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy after he was born prematurely at 27 weeks.

Cerebral palsy affects movement and coordination and is caused by a problem with the brain that occurs before, during or soon after birth.

His parents, Miranda and Mike Brown, were told that he would never be able to walk, talk or attend mainstream education.

Elliot became a patient at Evelina London when he was five and, as part of his treatment, Dr Charlie Fairhurst, head of children's neurosciences at Evelina London, injected botulinum toxin A (Botox) into his legs, which greatly helped him to improve his mobility and strength.

Miranda, 50, said: “Despite what doctors at our local hospital previously said, Elliot started talking when he was one and took his first steps at three, but he was still very unsteady on his feet, and had limited movement.

“Once he was at Evelina London, Dr Fairhurst and Dr Anne Wright helped him to gain physical

They were really great with Elliot and helped him to understand why he needed to wear his splint, which

supported his joints and muscles.”

While Elliot’s physical strength and mobility continued to improve, he developed severe bladder

problems, which is a complication of cerebral palsy.

In 2009 it was decided that he would need surgery to correct the problem. Later that year Elliot, then nine, underwent bladder reconstruction surgery, which lasted eight hours at Evelina London. The surgery, led by consultant paediatric urologist Dr Kalpana Patil, was a success.

This meant that for the first time in his life Elliot was able to fully participate in sports. He developed an interest in cricket at school, which led to him joining the Steyning Cricket Club’s youth team.

In 2015 Elliot was picked to play for Sussex Cricket Club’s disability team, and after three years with the club Elliot joined Middlesex’s disability team. In July last year Elliot was selected to play for the England PD (physical disability) Lion’s cricket team.

Miranda said: “If it wasn’t for the fantastic care Elliot received at Evelina he wouldn’t have been able to pursue his interest in cricket. I’m extremely proud of him.”

Dr Fairhurst said: "It’s very rewarding to know that the teams at Evelina London have helped Elliot achieve this. I wish him the best of luck in all of his endeavours.”

Activity boxes take patients down memory lane

NURSES AT Guy’s and St Thomas’ have introduced activity boxes to help jog the memories of dementia patients. The boxes help patients take part in conversations with ward and community staff and carers so they feel relaxed during a hospital stay or treatment.

Boxes contain a range of materials including paint sets and story boards depicting everyday scenes like a tool box, kitchen or seaside. The story board illustrations include a power drill for DIY or whisk from the kitchen cupboard and are simple enough to be completed by patients, with the support of ward and community staff or visiting family and friends.

By taking part in meaningful activities, patients are helped to stimulate their memory and to build better relationships with staff, family and friends. This may help to reduce any anxiety they feel in a

clinical setting.

There are 850,000 people in the UK who have dementia, including 40,000 people under the age of 65 who suffer from early onset dementia.

Nike Tella, dementia and delirium clinical nurse specialist at Guy’s and St Thomas’, says: “These story boards are a fantastic conversation opener and a great way for our staff to stimulate discussion with dementia patients who may otherwise feel lost in an environment that isn’t home.”

The activity boxes, which are also available to people with learning disabilities, have been placed on 38 inpatient wards, in patient transport areas and discharge lounges, outpatient departments such as the older persons assessment unit and fracture clinic and at Minnie Kidd House in Clapham, the Pulross Centre in Brixton and the Amputee Rehabilitation Unit in Kennington.

VER THE next few weeks, Theresa May is likely to put an issue in front of Parliament for a vote which will profoundly damage the lives of people living in Southwark for generations to come.

Our local Peckham MP Harriet Harman will have a crucial vote on it.

That issue is the proposal to grant permission for a massive expansion of Heathrow airport.

The rich corporate aviation lobbyists have poured millions into lobbying the government to overturn the democratic decision not to allow expansion, following a massive campaign by Londoners and our elected Mayors.

Expansion would increase the number of Heathrow flights to over 700,000. There would be a flight over Southwark every minute, with noise between 57-60 decibels!

Research has shown aircraft noise can lead to stress and heart disease. Heathrow is a major source of transport pollution in London, which is killing an estimated 300 people in Southwark every year. Over 3,000 more are living with pollution related awful cancers and respiratory diseases.

In addition to the pollution and noise catastrophe that Heathrow expansion would bring to Southwark, it would lead to a massive increase in CO2 emissions, trashing the UK’s carbon budget and increasing the likelihood that north Southwark will be flooded by rising sealevels within a couple of generations.

There are a number of London Tory MPs who have promised their constituents not to vote for Heathrow expansion. Theresa May will need the votes of some Labour MPs to destroy Southwark’s quality of life.

The shocking thing is that local Labour Peckham MP Harriet Harman is outrageously proposing to help Theresa May do this by actually voting with the Tories!

Why is Harman intent on destroying the quality of life of her constituents?

Using her privileged position as temporary Labour party leader, she trashed the Tories for not giving the go-ahead for expansion.

It is crucial that people flood Harman (and Southwark’s other 2 Labour MPs) with emails demanding that they not back the Tories & but instead defend the lives, health and peace and quiet of Southwark’s residents and the future of our planet.

Councillors’ response to Ledbury article WE ARE writing in response to your article last week regarding the Ledbury Estate.

Firstly, we think it is strange that your article quotes the views of various party leaders whose parties

were resoundingly rejected in the area, but did not quote a single current resident of the estate or elected representative of them, including us as the local councillors. We are also concerned that the report wrongly suggests that lower rise blocks on the estate are being considered for demolition, when commitments have been made by both the cabinet member for housing and leader of the council some weeks ago that this is not the case.

More importantly, your article didn’t make clear that most of the options being considered for the towers on the estate do not involve demolition. There are five different options being explored by the council with Ledbury residents on the Resident Project Board, only one of which involves demolition of any homes. All the other four options involve strengthening and improving the existing four tower blocks.

As local councillors, whilst we want to carefully listen to the outcome of the work and the views of local residents, we have been clear from the outset that we think the demolition option looks like the worst of the five.

Demolition is the most expensive and the most disruptive of the options. Whilst that option would replace any council homes lost, it would break up what is a successful community on the estate and it would leave a long period before council homes could be occupied at a time of severe social housing shortage in the borough. So we view demolition as a last resort if the other options don’t work.

We also want to make sure that residents of the estate have as much of a say in the future of their homes as possible. This needs to be done not only through the Resident Project Board (made up of residents who have the time to look into the detail of the options) but also through the Ledbury Tenants and Residents Association. As local

councillors, we will continue do all that we can to make sure the voices of Ledbury residents are heard loud and clear before any decisions on its future are taken.

Time to get out the shovels at Heathrow RESPONDING TO the announcement that plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport have been approved

Cabinet endorsement of plans for a third runway at Heathrow will be welcomed by many small firms across the UK. We now need to see some urgency injected into proceedings.

British businesses have waited decades for increased airport capacity and the regional connectivity it will bring. It’s time to get shovels in the ground.

Thousands of small firms rely on air travel to develop new contacts, visit clients and open up export opportunities.

They’ll be looking forward to Parliament approving Heathrow expansion plans in the weeks ahead.

HEN I was selected as the Labour parliamentary candidate for Dulwich and West Norwood in 2014 there were four words that came to everyone’s lips across the whole constituency: “big shoes to fill”.

And they certainly were. Tessa had been both an outstanding constituency MP and one of the highest profile cabinet members of the Labour government.

Tessa had a strong sense of compassion, a desire for justice and the ability to make deep empathetic connections with people. As a newly qualified social worker, Tessa developed a passion for early years’ intervention and education to address disadvantage in the lives of very young children that ultimately led her to establish Sure Start, a programme which has transformed hundreds of thousands of lives across the country.

In 1992 King’s College Hospital was in crisis with patients experiencing long waits on trolleys in A&E. Tessa embarked on a regular series of visits to A&E to document the numbers of patients waiting on trolleys in a campaign she called “Casualty Watch”. She used the data she gathered to relentlessly lobby the Tory secretary of state for health, Virginia Bottomley, and the campaign made a substantial contribution to significant reform of health services in London.

Tessa was a visionary, who saw how things could be – no better demonstrated than in her work on the London 2012 Olympics. Tessa saw how the Olympics might be not only a profile-raising vanity project for London, but the vehicle for delivering transformative investment into the poorest parts of the city, and a glorious and authentic celebration of London and Londoners in all their diversity.

It has been no surprise to anyone who worked with Tessa that during the last year of her life, as she faced such a difficult and bleak diagnosis, she chose to use that experience to campaign to help others. No surprise, but remarkable nevertheless, and extremely brave.

The commitment and internal steel that helped Tessa to secure five new secondary schools in Dulwich and West Norwood, create Sure Start centres across the country and help orchestrate the London 2012 Olympics enabled her to bolster the profile of brain tumour research and secure new commitments from the government to advance treatment options and clinical trials in the months before she died.

She will be hugely missed by so many of us, and her extraordinary legacy will live on.

Lost in Translations

Brian Friel’s Translations is all about the power of words and how they are used to entice, to admonish, to teach, to love and to hate. In Hugh’s hedge school classroom the locals are taught in Irish. It is where Greek and Latin is the order of the day, as well as multiplication tables and a few stiff shots of poteen. Old Jimmy staggers in and raves over sirens and goddesses from ancient mythology, and recites verse from Virgil and Homer. To counter Jimmy and Hugh’s verbosity, there is Sarah who struggles to form a sentence without the help of Hugh’s son, Manus.

To this bucolic scene the English army arrives to Anglicise the local place names, draw new maps and open a school where only English is spoken. Hugh’s second son Owen returns from Dublin to act as a translator for the soldiers but is seen more a traitor than someone smoothing the way to a better future. As much as some villagers embrace change, many are unhappy that it is not the Irish

making those changes. It is as if the Redcoats in their gleaming uniforms push the Irish in their ragged clothes deeper down into their mire of myth and folklore.

At a time when past foreign policy increasingly comes back to bite us, Translations is a timely reminder of what was bad about the British Empire Beneath the veneer of fun and laughs there was an eerie undercurrent of impending doom, so we knew that when Maire and Lieutenant Yolland found they had eyes for each other when the only word they had in

Whether they are being hoisted into the air with only a rope tied around their face, holding each other up in the air by their teeth, or balancing a large hoop on their forehead with another performer in turn balancing

There is also an undeniable air of effortless coolness to this 14 strong ensemble; a certain swagger in their approach - and the completion of their jaw-dropping stunts that makes them irresistible to watch, and kind of makes you want to be them. That said, there is a genuine sense of camaraderie and support that comes across amongst the troupe, although that is probably quite essential when you consider the dangerous feats they perform. Their enjoyment and passion for performing is palpable, and that coupled with the pure concentration from all involved leaves the audience with an experience that goes way beyond any expectations and becomes something quite remarkable.

LAST NIGHT watching Molière’s Tartuffe was very surreal, and I reckon the deluge that flooded the railway system saved many from an unbelievably overblown, pretentious waste of money, writes Rene Eyre.

Inexplicably the unbelievably verbose text was almost entirely in French, so the trusty surtitles were very much required unless you were actually bi-lingual. Why surtitles for theatre and opera are placed above the proscenium, and therefore preventing any engagement with the business on stage, is a mystery to me. Especially when the beautiful, baroque set hosted a Hockneyinspired Californian poolside patio.

That it was accompanied by a spooky perspex box that hovered mid stage and rather clunkily moved forward and backwards, was the least of this play’s problems.

The idea of transposing Tartuffe - a work that parodies the hypocrisies of French aristocrats - to Trump’s America is incomprehensible, and to then have English actors throwing themselves around the stage in a really self-conscious way, while struggling with accents that negotiated a route to the Deep South via Croydon, was more than a tad

Set in the dog eat dog world of multinationals the stage is appropriately stylish and upmarket.

As the four are pitted against each other in psychological warfare it becomes more and more disarming. Who is the imposter and who is really up to the job?

With very little physical action it is testament to the writing and acting that make this show captivating. Johnathan Cake as wise cracking Frank Porter has some great one liners, but as the air conditioner seemed to bite on my fingers and wrap my friends hair around her face, my main objective was to stay warm, which was so unfortunate as it was the only thing to spoil the evening!

The Grönholm Method forces us to look at the lengths employees go to move up the corporate ladder, and the extent employers will push boundaries as the tests become more and more extravagant. I was caught up in the tense guessing game which was executed beautifully by the tight cast.

With John Gordon Sinclair as the bumbling Rick Foster never short of a Tic Tac, Greg McHugh making a statement as Carl Gardner, and Laura Pitt-Pulford as the tough, lone female, it was a great night’s entertainment.

Pretentious production proves painful

It was great having a good seat in the utterly beautiful Theatre Royal, and hilarious being chatted-up by an academic who seemed to think I was someone to be seen with, or who had a positive opinion about this 17th century French farce that, even when translated into English, I find tedious and irritating at the best of times!

EACH YEAR since 2003 local people have been voting for the people, events and places they have felt worthy of a blue plaque.

A HERITAGE project has been launched to explore the history of the original Camberwell Fair, which ran for almost 600 years until it was shut down in 1855 because of “immoral and riotous behaviour”.

The fair held on Camberwell Green, which dates back to 1279, was once a place where people came together to trade goods, network, play games, and enjoy entertainment.

John Whelan, who is leading the Rare Doings at Camberwell Fair project which will research the heritage of the popular event, said it was the one time of the year when people would come together and really enjoy themselves.

“This was a time before we had theatre and the fair was people’s escape,” he told the News.

“It was a time before television so it was a place people would play things like skittles, and you would get food like suckling pigs or horse chestnuts which would be over a fire.

“Traditionally it would be a space where people might exchange some sheep or show their best cow; it was a place to trade, a place to party and enjoy yourself, and a place to see people from around the community who you wouldn’t see at any other time

of the year because people lived in small communities in little hamlets.

“By the time the fair ended in 1855 there would have been fortune tellers and those kinds of things – it would have evolved and changed as society changed.”

It is believed the fair originally ran for three weeks from August 9, ending on September 1 – the feast day of St Giles, the parish church of Camberwell.

Eventually the fair only lasted for three days and, following a number of attempts to shut the fair down after middle class people moved into the area, it finally ended in 1855.

“The rich people moved into the area and they saw it as immoral,” explained John.

“It was a case of people saying ‘Not in our back yard – we’ve got these nice Victorian villas and then we’ve got these working class people having this fair and it’s not right these debaucherous people should have this fun’.”

Camberwell Fair returned in its modern form in 2015 and will be held at Camberwell Green on September 1 this year.

John is looking for ten volunteers from the community interested in researching the history of the fair for The Rare Doings at Camberwell Fair project, which has been awarded £9,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The scheme came about after the ‘News’ approached English Heritage to get more of our history recognised, only to be told that most of our buildings would not qualify as they were destroyed in the blitz and post war era.

Working in partnership with Southwark Heritage Association and Southwark Council, over 50 of our own blue plaques have been erected.

Camberwell Fair toy 1839

Working with the Cuming Museum and Southwark Local History Library and Archive, the volunteers will use archives, artefacts and research to create art works and interpretations based on the heritage of the fair to be displayed at the event on September 1.

One of the artefacts in the Cuming Museum collection is a glass toy bought by the Cuming family when they visited the fair in 1839.

It is a typical souvenir of the time and was one of the many items successfully rescued from the museum space during the fire at Walworth Town Hall in 2013.

John, who is a director of People’s Company theatre group, based at Southwark Playhouse, is also organising an animated history tour for this year’s fair.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that, because of works

by SGN, in the above named road, it made an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from waiting and loading at any time in part of Jarvis Road.

Whilst the restriction is in place, and whilst the authorised traffic signs/road markings are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to wait, including waiting for the purpose of loading and unloading, at any time in Jarvis Road as detailed below:

(b) Jarvis Road, at it’s junction with Melbourne Grove to block end on the southern kerb line.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, insofar as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The Hamlet finished second in the Isthmian Premier League but were promoted to the sixth-tier for the first time in their history after beating Hendon in a penalty shoot-out in the play-off final.

Rose said: “We are excited to go to new stadiums and try to enjoy new experiences and new challenges. That’s the opportunity football gives you. It’s strange. As much as we have enjoyed being in the Ryman Premier League, being ambitious, we wanted to go up.

“We have met a lot of people along the way. You become friends with managers, coaches, players and even some of the staff at grounds.”

The Dulwich players are yet to return for pre-season training yet and when they do will travel to Germany to play Altona 93 as part of their 125-year anniversary celebrations.

Charlton Athletic and travelling to Bromley and Maidstone United.

“We have a partnership with Altona 93. They wear the same colours as ourselves and we have had a good friendship with them over the years.”

Rose said.

“They came over to us for their anniversary three years ago for a preseason game. It was a highly competitive game, so I know we will be playing good opposition and it gives us a chance to go to Germany and bond as a team and enjoy a little bit of our time.”

The 39-year-old said it will take his players a few months till they get used to the league and will not be making any predictions of where they want to finish next season.

Rose continued: “The schedule won’t change too much. I believe we play a few less games in the league above, so there is a more rest period.

Not as many Saturday, Tuesday games. So that could help us. In terms of the message to the players, it’s always the same.

“At the start, we will try and be the best we can, as we don’t know the league inside out.

“We will look at the first month and the opposition we are playing against

and get a mark of where we are and see how much we need to improve.

“We can’t go around saying, we don’t want to get relegated or we want to survive.

Dulwich record first win Surrey Championship – Division 2 Saturday 2nd June 2018 Kingstonian CC, Windsor Avenue, New Malden.

“We just took it game by game. We never got ahead of ourselves. We celebrated each game together in the changing room, having a disco.

“Going from a team that struggled to pick up points to a team unbeaten in 19-games was a great feeling. The morale and team spirit were fantastic and something that I’m sure we won’t forget.”

Nethercott was asked why his side struggled in their second season after finishing in the top-six the previous year: “It was strange. They call it ‘second season syndrome’. I think teams get to know you and how you play and that’s a big worry that all the teams know how to play against you.”

Harris opted to stick with the same 44-2 formation that earned his side promotion to the Championship in 2016/2017 and Nethercott admired his former teammate’s courage.

He said: “Everyone plays 4-5-1 now. It was good to see last year that it wasn’t just men behind the ball. It was 4-4-2 and that’s brave. In your first season in the league, that’s very brave. I hope he continues that. That’s his philosophy and you must stick to what you believe in.

“He might get a run of defeats this year, but it’s how they react after that. Last year they didn’t have that. Next year it’s going to be a tough league. Two of the sides coming up, Blackburn and Wigan. The teams coming down, the Stokes and teams like that, they’re going to want to go straight back up. It’s going to be a very interesting league.”

Millwall’s attendances at The Den gradually increased over the season, concluding with a sell-out crowd of more than 17,000 against Aston Villa on the final day of the season, which is almost 5,000 more than their first home game against Bolton Wanderers.

Nethercott admitted that bumper crowds have a positive effect on results and applauded Harris’ side for making The Den a tough place to come for visiting teams.

“It’s massive. To sell out, it’s been brilliant. That’s your aim as a player, to come here and get a packed house and you’ve got half a chance of winning games.

“I think he has brought the fans closer to the team. They were a little bit distant before Neil took over. You become a little bit more aggressive [playing in front of Millwall fans]. They are like a 12th man for you. You need that.

You need to make this place hostile and that’s what they did, they made this a tough place to come to.”

MILLWALL LEGEND Jimmy Abdou admitted that he gave everything every time he stepped onto the pitch - and that is why he proved to be such a popular figure with the Lions faithful.

Abdou spent last season on-loan at AFC Wimbledon before being released by Millwall at the end of the season.

He has since announced he will be joining French fourth-tier outfit Martigues, the club where he started his professional playing career.

Before he departs for France, the 33year-old will have his testimonial at The Den in July, with the date and opposition still yet to be decided.

Abdou made 342 appearances for the club, experiencing promotion to the Championship twice, with the 2017 League One play-off final win against Bradford City proving to be his final appearance in Lions colours.

He calls Millwall ‘my club’ and says there were a great fit for him, describing his ten-years at The Den as the best times of his career.

He said: “It’s been a long journey for me.

With the team, the squad, the club, you don’t realise how long you have been there. When I went to AFC Wimbledon last year, I started to realise how long it has been.

“For me, leaving Millwall is like leaving the family. Obviously, I wasn’t here last year but I tried to manage to come to games when I had the time. Millwall means a lot to me. It’s where I had the best time in my career. It’s a big part of me. It just hit me that I am going to leave my club, the club where I did everything, where I won everything.

“For me, it was a great experience.

Something I never thought I would be able to do. To stay at the same club for many years, especially nowadays, it’s something I am very proud of and I really enjoyed my time at Millwall.

“It’s not easy to play for Millwall. You must fit in the club and the way the team plays. It was a great fit for me and I did well.

“The fans want the players to deliver on the pitch and that’s what I tried first to do.

When I was in the team I tried to perform the best that I could. I gave it my all and I

think that’s why I have had good feedback from the fans. That’s why they love me.

“They want players to play with their heart, to give everything on the pitch and that’s what I tried to do.

For the first three years of Abdou’s career at The Den, he was a teammate of current manager Neil Harris.

Abdou said he knew that Harris had the right aspects to be a successful manger and isn’t surprised at how well he is doing.

He said: “You can always tell a future manager. He was a great leader when we played together. On and off the pitch. He always tried to encourage people and he certainly has the right character to be a great manager and I think he is proving it now, so I am happy for him.

Perhaps the moment Millwall supporters will remember Abdou most fondly for was his equaliser against Leeds that sent the Lions to Wembley and into the League One play-off final in 2009. Kenny

Jackett’s side were drawing 1-1 on aggerate and the tie was heading to extratime until Abdou stabbed home with 16 minutes left to silence the Elland Road crowd.

“I think my best moment was that night at Leeds. I scored the goal at Elland Road to take us through to the final for the first time.” Abdou said. “It was magic. It was a great night for me. Everything started from that moment for me at Millwall, so it’s a great memory. But the main highlights for me were the two promotions.

They were great achievements for the club. But personally, for me, when I scored the goal at Leeds, it was unbelievable.

Asked by the News if he planned to come back to The Den in the future to watch, he said: “Yes, definitely. My son is a proper Millwall fan. I will have to come back. For me, but for him as well. I will be back at The Den hopefully.”

FORMER MILLWALL goalkeeper Harry Girling says he has no regrets from his time at the club despite not making a firstteam appearance.

The 20-year-old signed his first professional contract in July 2016 and was on the substitutes’ bench on numerous occasions in the 2016/2017 season.

The arrival of David Martins in the summer of 2017 halted Girling’s progress and he joined Leatherhead on loan for the first half of last season to get some first-team action, before signing for Cheshunt in March.

Girling admitted that he chose Millwall because he saw a window of opportunity for himself and despite his lack of chances he was full of praise for Neil Harris.

He said: “I spent my time wisely and did everything I could to give myself the best chance. The reason I chose Millwall was because I could see a pathway. I got to the end of my scholarship and signed my professional contract. Even though I knew I worked hard and deserved it, I was still nervous going into the meeting for talks. I was envious. I was lucky enough to get one.

“I had an up and down first year as a professional. I missed the whole of pre-season and the start of the season with illness, which obviously set me

back, but the back end of that season put me in good shape for a new contract, which I got. This year I was unlucky, I missed three months with a broken wrist and that really set me back again.

“I haven’t got any regrets from my time at Millwall. It’s a great club and what the gaffer has done down there is unbelievable.

“As a man, the respect that he demands and the respect that he gets is bar none really. He is just one of them people that you want to do well for. He brings out the best in players as you can see this season.

“Training with the first-team is a step above from the Under-23s. It’s so hard, but at the same time it’s so beneficial. Although I didn’t get to make a first-term appearance, I think the fans knew what I was capable of.”

Of those 14 appearances on the bench, there was one that stood out for the former Lion. Tottenham away in 2017. Jordan Archer had failed to recover from a thigh problem leaving Millwall with only two recognised goalkeepers for their visit to north London. Tom King started the game, meaning Girling found himself on the bench for the trip to the Premier League giants.

He said: “White Hart Lane is arguably one of the best stadiums in the country, if not Europe. For it to be a sell-out and warm up in front of that amount of people was amazing. I felt like that was a good opportunity, with so many loyal Millwall fans there to

show them what I could do, even in the warm-up.

“I was always ready. It felt like a no pressure situation.”

For most of his time at Millwall, Girling was playing number two to Jordan Archer and paid tribute to the Scot for helping him during his time at the club.

“As a person, I can’t fault Jordan at all. He isn’t a self-centred person, he tried to benefit my game. He’s just a good person to have around and I believe he deserves to be where he has got to. He is still young, he hasn’t even reached his prime yet and deserves everything he has got.”

Girling is now a free agent and has been in search for a new club since his release from Millwall just over three weeks ago: “There has been interest. I haven’t had anything in concrete yet, but I have always been a level-headed person, I am not going to get too down if I haven’t got anything and see what route it takes me. If playing in Non-League is the way I am going to get back up to professional football, then that’s the way I am going to go. I feel that’s the way the game is going in general and a lot of players are making it through Non-League.

“I have got my own pre, pre-season set up, so I have got a programme I will be doing and a goalkeeping coach I will be using. I will be getting myself in the best shape I can so when I do find a club, I give myself the best chance. Whatever level that is, I am going to give it everything I can.”

Aussie duo off to Russia

AUSTRALIA PAIR Tim Cahill and James Meredith have been included in Australia’s 23-man World Cup squad for the finals in Russia this summer.

Cahill, 38, returned to Millwall on a short-term deal this January to better his chances of making Bert van Marwijk’s squad and

despite making just ten substitute appearances, was named in the 23.

The Socceroo’s legend will be hoping to feature at his fourth finals and become just the fourth man ever to score at four separate World Cups.

As for Meredith, it will be his first World Cup and it tops off a fine year for him. The 30-year-old joined Millwall on a free transfer last summer and the left-became a

fans favourite at The Den, starting all 46 league games last term.

Meredith has been capped just twice by Australia and hasn’t played for them since November 2015.

Australia play Hungary in Budapest on Saturday in their final warm-up game before flying out to Russia, where they will play France, Denmark and Peru in the group stages.

FORMER MILLWALL defender Stuart Nethercott has hailed their excellent campaign and praised Neil Harris for sticking to his guns last season.

The Lions finished 8th and were still in with a chance of promotion going into the final few weeks of the season, but defeats to Fulham and Middlesbrough ended their Premier League dream.

Despite those defeats, Millwall still achieved their highest league finish in the second-tier since Nethercott’s side in 2001/2001 finished 4th and qualified for the play-offs.

Millwall were beaten in the semifinals that year by eventual winners Birmingham City and Nethercott says

that the Lions must strengthen if they want to continue to compete in the division.

Speaking last Sunday at the 2018 Wonderwall Cup, he said: “They were excellent. It’s a shame how it tailed off towards the end, but what a season.

“The expectations now are the biggest thing. We had it in our time.

We got to the play-offs and the next season wasn’t great. We got rolled over here 6-0 by Rotherham on the first day of the season.

“He [Neil Harris] will be wary of that. He must strengthen, and I think getting stronger each year is going to be the way forward for staying in this division and hopefully pushing on that one more step from last year.

“It’s a British based side and that’s what its all about. Everyone speaks the same language.

Neil Harris’ side then travel to Portugal for a warm-weather training camp and play two behind-closed-doors friendlies in the middle of July.

Once the Lions return from the Algarve, they will play two League Two outfits in the space of four days.

Firstly, they face Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium on 21 July (3pm) before travelling to Essex to play Colchester United at the Colchester Community Stadium on 24 July (7.45pm).

Millwall conclude their preseason schedule with Jimmy Abdou’s testimonial at the end of July at The Den, on what promises to be a memorable day for the former Lions midfielder.

Abdou was asked if he could reveal who the opposition would be for his testimonial, but he replied: “No, sorry, I cannot say which team it will be against, yet.

Hopefully it will be decided in the next few weeks, but it’s not an easy task at the moment.

Hopefully it will be sorted ASAP, but at the moment I have no news.”
