TOBY ECKERSLEY, Conservative candidate for London Bridge and West Bermondsey ward, has died unexpectedly, forcing the ward’s election to be suspended while today’s borough-wide poll goes ahead as planned.

The News understands that the 76-year-old Alderman of the borough passed away suddenly last weekend.

He had served as a Conservative councillor in Dulwich’s Village ward from 1977 to 1986 and from 1990 to 2014, and had chosen to stand again for London Bridge and West Bermondsey ward in today’s election.

Toby was a political stalwart in the borough, serving as councillor in Dulwich’s Village ward from 1997 to 1986 and from 1990 to 2014. He has been described as an ‘exemplary public servant’ and ‘a charming man’. He was both of these. His death, and with it the loss of his informed knowledge of the borough, its recent political history and the workings of local government, will be felt by many.

It takes an estate to raise a child

Bermondsey residents’ group is launching a project aimed at getting youngsters off the streets and away from the dangers of drug and knife crime.

One of the residents, Lisa Dalton, says she has seen children on their bikes, hiding knives and described how ‘scary’ it was to have her kids exposed to it.

So she and her fellow residents are deciding to do something about it. She told us: “My nan used to say ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ but this is the 21st century so you can substitute ‘village’ for ‘estate’.” It is this attitude that needs to be replicated by Londoners across the capital to deal with knife crime.

The St James' dragon in 1925

THE GOLDEN dragon weather vane which sits atop St James’ Church in Bermondsey will go on show to the public for the first time in almost a century.

The eight-foot creature will be taken down to be repaired and regilded before being displayed in the church in Thurland Road over a long weekend.

It is believed it will be the first time the weather vane will be on show to the public since June 1925.

The church’s tower will also be opened to the public after work is carried out to repair the stonework on the tower and portico and repaint the clock face and bell.

Gary Jenkins, vicar of both St James’ and nearby St Anne’s, as well as area dean of Bermondsey, said a dragon may have been chosen for the church’s weather vane to chime with a church across the water.

“I think it’s to do with the fact Mary-leBow, across the river from here, has a dragon,” he said.

“Also the dragon is the symbol of the City of London and the crest has got the dragon and the cross of St George on it, so there’s always been that connection.

“I wondered if some of the people who funded the building of St James’ Church were city businessmen, because in those days they lived in Bermondsey which was a sort of village on the river.”

The repair work is being funded by a £232,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant, together with £57,000 from the Parochial Church Council of St James.

It will last 20 weeks and is expected to be complete by mid-September.

“The last major work was about 25 years ago but over the last 50 years the building has been repaired,” said Mr Jenkins.

“It was closed for seven years in the 1960s and reopened in 1967.

“All the stonework on the tower will be repaired – there are literally bits falling off – and the clock faces are going to be repainted and refurbished and obviously the dragon itself.

“There will be an opportunity for people to ascend the tower right to the top and the stone masons will give them a tour and show them the work being done.”

Two open days will be arranged for the public to view to the tower and dragon.

The dates will be publicised once they have been confirmed.

TOBY ECKERSLEY, Conservative candidate for London Bridge and West Bermondsey ward, and longstanding former Southwark Councillor, has died unexpectedly, prompting an outpouring of tributes from political colleagues and forcing the suspension of a ward election.

THE FAMILY of a young Millwall supporter with cerebral palsy who wants to have “legs like her friends” are fundraising for potentially life-changing surgery.

Ellice Barr was just 22-months-old when she was diagnosed with diplegic cerebral palsy after her parents noticed she was barely crawling.

The youngster, who was born seven weeks early weighing just 3lbs 9oz, has splints on her legs and has to use a walking frame to get around as the condition causes muscle tension and spasms in her lower legs.

Now aged six, Lions fan Ellice says she wants to have legs like her school friends and be able to climb.

Parents Joe, 38, and Amy, 32, have set up a fundraising page to raise the money needed for a surgery called selective dorsal rhizotomy which isn’t currently available on the NHS but could help Ellice to walk unaided.

Speaking to the News, Millwall season ticket holder Joe said: “When Ellice was diagnosed we were all devastated for her.

“However, she’s in a mainstream school and they’ve done a cognitive test and said it hasn’t affected her mentally, it’s just her legs don’t work.

“It would’ve broken my heart if they said it affected her elsewhere but nowadays businesses have to be disability-friendly and her quality of life would’ve been so much worse if it affected her mentally.

“This operation should permanently reduce the spasticity in her legs and remove the tightness which will then improve her walking, range of motion and mobility.

“They can’t guarantee it’s going to work but even if she can walk with a little bit of a limp or with one crutch

that would be perfect for us – we just want to give her a better quality of life.”

The surgery isn’t currently funded by the NHS so Ellice’s family is trying to raise £65,000 for the operation as well as ongoing physiotherapy.

It is hoped she will be able to have the operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital this July.

“Ellice is fully aware of the operation,” said Joe, who works as an assistant manager at an Aldi store.

“I said ‘we are going to try to fix your legs, how do you feel about that’ and her exact words were ‘I want to have legs like my friends and climb better’.”

Joe, who lives in Deal, Kent, with his family, which includes eight-yearold Jay, thanked the community for their support as well as Millwall FC

which invited Ellice to the ground to see the players, dressing room and dugout after winger Jed Wallace read about the youngster’s plight on Twitter.

Man stabbed on Old Kent Road

A MAN remains in hospital after being stabbed on the Old Kent Road.

Police were called to reports of a fight at McDonald’s at about 5.15am on Sunday, April 29.

Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and found a man, aged in his 20s, suffering a stab

injury. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries where he remains.

There have been no arrests and Southwark police continue to investigate.

The 76-year-old Alderman of the borough had served as a Conservative councillor in Dulwich’s Village ward from 1977 to 1986 and from 1990 to 2014.

In 1983 he made an unsuccessful bid to stand as an MP for Camberwell and Peckham.

He had chosen to stand again for London Bridge and West Bermondsey ward in today’s election, with candidates saying he was on “fine form” during the rounds of hustings in the run up to the election.

Southwark’s Returning Officer, Duncan Whitfield, issued a note on Tuesday evening countermanding the election in London Bridge and West Bermondsey ward, confirming that a new election in that ward will be held within 35 days of the notice, with a date announced in due course.

Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum, praising Mr Eckersley as a “charming gentleman”, “quintessential Englishman”, and an “exemplary public servant”.

Michael Mitchell, Conservative Group Leader and friend of Mr Eckersley’s for 35 years, said: "Toby's political career took him from being a young firebrand who gave no quarter during the heady days of the mid-1980s, to be the revered elder statesmen to whom councillors from all political parties, and officers from many parts of the council, would turn to for advice. He was always happy to draw on his experience and point people in the right direction. For someone who was part of a group which never exceeded eight of Southwark's 63 councillors, his influence on the making of modern Southwark should never be underestimated.

“He was truly a politician who punched above his weight. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him."

Kim Humphreys, former deputy leader of Southwark Council said: “Southwark has lost a true servant with Toby’s passing.

“He was universally respected for his dedication and hard work by all across the political divide within Southwark and he will be greatly missed by everyone.”

doughty and effective Tory Southwark campaigner, but always a kind-hearted and charming gentleman. I disagreed with him often, but like many others, I always respected him.”

Labour MP Neil Coyle commented: “I may not have agreed with his political views, but his commitment to our community was unquestionable. He was an old-school Tory with impeccable manners and will be remembered fondly by all those he helped locally.”

Labour leader, Peter John, told the News: “I am very sorry to hear of the death of Toby Eckersley. Toby served his community and the council tirelessly for many years. He stood up for what he thought was right and was relentless in the causes he championed.” He added: “Southwark is the poorer for his passing and I personally I will miss him.”

Lib Dem leader Anood Al-Samerai said: “Toby and I were on a hustings panel together just last week and he was on fine form. He was an exemplary public servant and all his commitment to the people of our borough will not be forgotten.

Tobias William Hammersley Eckersley, MBE, was born on July 22, 1941, educated at Charterhouse School and St John’s College, Oxford. He never married and did not have children. He took early retirement to focus on local politics after a career in finance, working for ICI, and had also cared for his elderly mother. Throughout three decades as a councillor he served as executive member for finance, and chair of the audit and governance committee.

Mr Eckersley took a legal fight all the way to the Court of Appeal to stop his own home on Berryfield Road, Walworth, from being demolished, and later became an active member of the Walworth Society, and an advocate of the Aylesbury Estate leaseholders.

Nurses who trained at St Thomas’s Hospital back together after 40 years

A GROUP of nurses who trained at St Thomas’ Hospital 40 years ago reunited at the hospital to share fond memories.

Jenny Theed was 21 years old when she started training to be a nurse at St Thomas’ in 1978.

She became a senior staff nurse caring for patients with kidney failure, before moving to Bristol in 1982.

The 61-year-old, along with 35 other ‘Nightingale nurses’ who graduated from the Nightingale Training School at St Thomas’, reunited at the hospital to share memories and see how much it had changed as the NHS celebrates turning 70.

Jenny, who is now based in Bristol, said: “It was a brilliant place to train and was absolutely at the forefront.

“We were one of the first centres to do peritoneal dialysis [a treatment that uses the lining of the abdomen and a cleaning solution to clean the blood], which was pioneering.

“The tour of the hospital showed us how much the NHS has moved on in 40 years and gave us the opportunity to see some brand new state-of-the-art facilities.

“North Wing felt the same – like we had just left it – but the reception area was unrecognisable.”

In the 1970s Gassiot House, which is now used as an outpatient centre and office space, was the nurses’ accommodation but Jenny lived locally and travelled in for work.

“It was highly unusual for students to be able to ‘live out’,” she said.

“I was the only graduate student doing this but, as I had been to university in London and already had my own flat, I was given ‘dispensation’ on the understanding I would attend my placement shifts on time.”

“One of my lasting memories as a student nurse was working on the children’s ward,” she added.

“I can still remember sitting in a rocking chair and feeding the babies while overlooking the River Thames

and Big Ben. “Our uniform looked totally different to what the student nurses wear today and constructing the lace hats which we wore was an evening’s exercise.”

Making a splash! Paddling pool to open all summer

RUSKIN PARK paddling pool is set to open all summer after a successful fundraising campaign by Camberwell residents.

A previous campaign saved the pool from closure, in 2016, and now the group have secured a further £5,500 to keep the pool open for the next two years.

In December 2017, a new mural

depicting all the different people and groups who use the park was also painted over a previously graffiti-covered wall.

Campaign organiser Suzanne Vincent, whose company Urban Village has donated to the campaign, told the News: “With two children of my own, I have a keen interest in keeping the pool open.

children it is important for me to know that they have plenty of fun activities in the local area. My two are in that pool as soon as we open in late May, even if freezing, they don’t mind at all.

“During peak summer weekends, the

pool is jam packed and it’s very satisfying to know that the hard work is all worthwhile. “We have managed to keep the pool open now for two full seasons and this year will be our third. The pulling together of the community is absolutely brilliant.

“Urban Village has donated almost £10,000 in the three years of fund raising,

it is very special to us.”

The group said the pool should be open from May to September in both 2018 and 2019. The paddling pool is run in partnership with Lambeth Council. Funds raised pay for repainting the pool, carrying out testing, jet-washing at least once a month, and paying for other essential maintenance.

Jailed for biting off part of cop’s ear

Sister begs for information on her murdered brother

A MAN has been jailed for seven years after biting off part of a police officer's ear.

Shayhon Francis, 23, (pictured) of Denmark Hill, Camberwell, was found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent on Friday, April 27, following a trial at Inner London Crown Court.

On October 31, 2017, Francis was stopped by a lone male police constable for a routine search on the Roupell Park Estate in Tulse Hill.

Officers were conducting searches in the area following complaints from residents about drug dealing in the area.

Within seconds of being stopped, Francis head-butted the officer and, while the officer was on the floor, bit off part of his ear.

He also stamped on the officer's head before running away from the scene.

The missing part of the officer's ear was recovered from the ground but unfortunately could not be re-attached.

CID officers based at Brixton investigated and identified Francis as a suspect.

He was arrested on November 2, 2017, and charged with GBH with intent.

Although both sisters had moved by the time of his death, they regularly visited their Peckham home and Ola was a loving uncle to Zainab’s young son.

The day before he died, the whole family had been together celebrating Zainab’s 28th birthday with a bowling trip.

Ruki described the terrible events as “completely unexpected”, saying: “I never thought I would be in this situation.”

“He was normal, a really, really friendly, nice, relaxed, twenty-year-old who liked to have a laugh with friends and family.”

Those friends still come together to celebrate his birthday, and give support to their family on the anniversary of his death and on Mother’s Day. But with each year that passes, they also want to make sure people don’t forget about Ola, and information that could help his killers face justice is not lost.

That night on April 21, 2015, Ola had been watching a football match with a friend before cycling to East Surrey Grove, where he was attacked by two men.

He was shot and stabbed, and his attackers are believed to have fled the scene on foot via a cut-through from Cator Street into Sumner Road, before turning into Rosemary Road towards Surrey Canal Path.

Although three people have been arrested during the course of the investigation, they have all been released, and Ruki says the family cannot move on without answers.

“The tragedy of his life is that it was so short. At twenty the world is still your oyster but we will now never know what he would go on to achieve.”

Ruki says her family are working with police to do everything they can to keep the appeal fresh in the minds of people who may be able to help, especially anyone with information from between 10pm and 10.30pm, when his movements are unknown.

She tells the News: “I would just plead and beg whoever knows anything to come forward.

“There is nothing that can change the fact that he is gone but it could help bring someone to justice.”

A BERMONDSEY dad is taking on a charity walk with his family to celebrate getting the all clear from cancer.

Jon Lia was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January 2012 after insisting on a full check-up following the shock of losing a friend to bowel cancer.

The father-of-three, then aged 53, had shown no symptoms of having the condition, which can take up to 20 years to appear, but fortunately doctors caught it early.

After five weeks of daily brachytherapy – a type of radiotherapy – and years of checkups, Jon, now 59, finally got the words he had been waiting to hear in March this year.

Speaking to the News, the travel consultant’s wife Sue, 63, said their family had since made it their mission to urge people to get checked by a doctor.

“When we got the news that he was all clear it was brilliant; we both cried and as we were leaving the hospital we were ringing everyone,” said Sue, who sadly lost both of her parents to cancer.

“Now he just wants people to be aware and to get checked; he was lucky and has come out at the other end.

“It’s something we’ve gone through and we wouldn’t want anyone else to go through it.

“There was no history of cancer in his family as far as he knows and I think he would like the age [for screening] to be lowered.

Last week, Debbie and the members of Nellie’s Club hosted the Okey Cokey Club, run by AgeUK Bromley and Greenwich to help local Nepalese Gurkha veterans and their wives, widows and families become more included in the community. The event was hosted by Wade Hall in the Dickens Estate.

The idea came from discussions between Debbie and her best friend, Pauline Cahill, 58, who is the Okey Cokey Club’s project co-ordinator.

“It was wonderful. We had English ladies and Nepalese ladies sitting together, arranging together, with the English ladies helping and sharing their skills. There was

even some singing! I’ve had such fantastic feedback. Some of the ladies haven’t stopped talking about it,” Pauline told the News. “The Ghurkha community in London can be very isolated,” she added.

“Many of the men speak good English from their days in the army. But many of the wives and widows don’t speak the language and they lack confidence.”

It was the second time the clubs have got together after the two friends first tried the idea out in February.

Debbie added: “I’m really pleased with the way it worked out. Everyone had fun.

Residents’ group aims to help steer youngsters away from the streets

A BERMONDSEY residents’ group is launching a project aimed at getting youngsters off the streets and away from knife and drug crime.

Manor Estate tenants’ and residents’ association (TRA) plans to run free six-week projects such as self-defence and graffiti workshops for youngsters aged twelve to nineteen who live in the borough.

Lisa Dalton, secretary of the TRA, explained the aim of the project was to empower youngsters and to get positive role models to share where they’ve come from and where they are today.

“We don’t have many problems on the Manor and Rennie estates but the kids are all congregating down the Blue and it can be a bit intimidating if you’re not from the area and aren’t used to it,” said the 39-year-old, who works in Selfridges.

“I’ve got three children aged eight, five and three and we were at McDonald’s on the Old Kent Road one Saturday afternoon where there were a few kids outside on their bikes and when they took the saddles off I could see they were carrying knives inside.

“It’s scary and as a parent you see this and think ‘my kids are going to be exposed to this’.

“I know we are not going to stop it all but we need to give these kids something to do, we need to show them it isn’t going to get them anywhere – it’s going to get them dead.

“Even if you can make one kid think twice about picking up a knife and going out with it or make one child decide not to carry whatever they are carrying for the local drug dealer then that’s what makes the difference.”

Police believe burglaries linked

PECKHAM: A spate of burglaries near Old Kent Road are believed to be linked, police have confirmed.

Detectives in Southwark are investigating eight burglaries reported over just four days, between April 20-24, this year.

Five took place in Bird in Bush Road, one in Glengall Road, one in Haymerle Road, and another in Radnor Road.

Police confirmed that their investigation is on-going, but there have been no arrests at the time of going to press.

Florence, claimed PC Semple’s death was an accident as a result of a sex game gone wrong and denied trying to cannibalise parts of his body, but he was found guilty and jailed for life with a minimum of 24 years in December 2016.

On February 5, 2017, he was found hanging in his cell at Belmarsh Prison.

A jury at an inquest into his death at Southwark Coroner’s Court has recorded that the Italian killed himself.

The foreman said in a note read to the court: “On the morning of February 5, 2017, Mr Stefano Brizzi killed himself by hanging using a self-made ligature he had affixed to the light fitting in his cell at HMP Belmarsh.

“Neatly positioned on the bed were several handwritten documents

including a will, a letter to family and to a firmed that included the phrase 'I die I peace'.”

There had been “no evidence of foul play or substance abuse at the time”, according to the jury.

They said prison staff recognised Brizzi’s ongoing health issues and addressed them accordingly.

They concluded that Brizzi was “widely recognised as frustrated by the limitations of prison life” and was an “atypical” prisoner because of his intellect and education.

Brizzi's trial had heard how his once successful life spiralled out of control after he became addicted to crystal meth.

‘VIOLENT CRIME REDUCED BY 30%’ SAYS COMMANDER OF NEWLY MERGED POLICE EXCLUSIVE

THE COMMANDER of the newly merged Southwark and Lambeth police forces says his team has reduced violent crime by almost 30 per cent since the beginning of 2018, partly thanks to renewed stop-and-search.

Simon Messinger, previously Borough Commander for Southwark, took over the new Basic Command Unit (BCU) in April.

He told the News the full merger would take place later in the year but the public should not feel any changes, confirming response teams will still be working from Peckham and Brixton, and the neighbourhood teams, including dedicated ward officers, will also remain in place.

Although cuts have seen Southwark effectively lose an officer a week, he believes his merged boroughs will work effectively: “We are really ploughing money back into our IT strategy to help cops be out more, making us more agile, though we may have to slim down management and numbers to a certain extent.”

Knife crime and moped-enabled crime increased by half last year, and muggings by a quarter, but he believes his tactics are working. He said that since January 2018 knife and violent crime has been reduced by nearly 30 per cent in Southwark, with police making 38 offensive weapon arrests and 49 robbery arrests, attributing this success partly to a renewed focus on stop-and-search, “a tactic I know works”.

He said: “One in five stops should lead to finding something, and stop and search should be intelligence led.

We are adhering to that.

“There is a general understanding and support for stop and search, but the key issue is that it needs to be done the right way.

BERMONDSEY: A series of jazz events are heading to Bermondsey Square from this weekend.

Bermondsey Square Jazz Days will kick off this Sunday, May 6, from 1pm to 4pm.

The music event will then be held on the first Sunday of every month, ending on September 2.

It has been organised by the Unity Music Arts Trust, set up by Stephen Pierre, and backed by art curator Nolia Devlin from Borough-based Nolia’s Gallery. The Trust has been set up with the aim to “promote aspiring creative talent and culture and to support good causes”.

The Bermondsey Square Jazz Days will feature a number of jazz-influenced groups, including Stephen Pierre & The Jazz Collective, as well as music students and graduates.

The final event on September 2 will feature a jam session of guest musicians and singers. The events will be funded by a council neighbourhood grant of £1,200 and have been supported by local councillors and officers and Bermondsey Square Management.

When asked about his team, and how they will respond to the merger, he said: “They don’t often have a chance to look up and look at the lives they save and the lives they change, Westminster Bridge, London Bridge, shows you that.

“Like a very proud father, is the best way I can describe it, they are absolutely day-in-day-out fantastic.

PECKHAM: Locals will soon be able to enjoy another season of orchestral magic at one of London’s most unusual music venues.

The Multi-Story Orchestra is back for its eighth summer of orchestral and chamber concerts in the rooftop spaces of the Bold Tendencies multistory car park in Peckham.

Families are encouraged to come along to the season opening on 11 July, which will feature a new commission by British composer, Dani Howard. Words to accompany the piece have been written by spoken word artist and poet Simon Mole and will be sung by students from Kender, Lyndhurst, John Donne and Hollydale primary schools.

Cathedral announces plans to mark terror anniversary BOROUGH

SOUTHWARK CATHEDRAL has announced how it will mark the first anniversary of the London Bridge and Borough Market terror attack.

The cathedral has a number events taking place throughout the day on June 3, with people invited to attend a

number of services or simply light a candle.

Eight people were killed and dozens injured after a van driven by three Muslim extremists drove into pedestrians on London Bridge before launching a knife attack in Borough Market. At 3pm on June 3 a special service of commemoration at Southwark Cathedral will remember the event while giving thanks for all that

has happened in the community since and looking with hope into the future.

A Grand Iftar - a meal to break the Ramadan fast after sunset - will also be held to mark the anniversary by bringing all communities together to celebrate Ramadan, to promote resilience, and to share the common values of hope, peace and unity.

It will begin at 8pm with readings, speeches and a special performance by

the community, followed by the opening of fast which will take place approximately at 9.10pm.

There will be an art exhibition celebrating the diversity of London and showcasing how London remained united during times of adversity.

The Cathedral announced that 8.30am Morning Prayer, 9.30am Eucharist, and 11am Choral Eucharist services will be held on the day but the usual 6pm

service will not be taking place.

Anyone who would like to attend the commemoration service or Grand Iftar is asked to register in advance.

A PROFESSOR of neurosurgery at King’s College Hospital has been named UK Clinician of the Year by The Brain Tumour Charity.

Professor Keyoumars Ashkan, who is the hospital’s top surgeon for brain cancer, was recognised for his contribution not only to researching new treatments but also to improving patients’ quality of life.

According to Dr David Jenkinson, the Brain Tumour Charity’s Chief Scientific Officer, science is only part of the work needed to beat brain cancer.

“Science is critical, but everyone plays a part in helping improve life for those affected by a brain tumour,” he said.

“Professor Ashkan is committed to

making a critical change and driving it forward. We are honoured that he is the winner of the Clinician of the Year Award.”

The award was a particular honour for Professor Ashkan because it is decided by a panel which includes patients and their relatives.

“It’s a true privilege. The award is judged by patients, carers, charities and the public – all the people we work hard to serve,” he said.

Professor Keyoumars Ashkan came to London from Iran in 1984 when he was sixteen. He completed medical school in Cardiff and subsequently worked under eminent neurosurgeons in Canada and France.

Before coming to King’s eleven years ago, he was a senior lecturer and consultant neurosurgeon at the Institute of Neurology and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

In addition to caring for his patients, Professor Ashkan has published over 220 scientific papers and made contributions to several large clinical trials, including two which investigated the use of fluorescent light to diagnose tumours and guide tumour removal.

The route will be along woodland paths and surfaced lanes and is suitable for pushchairs.along.

BERMONDSEY: The Circle building has been awarded Grade II listed building status by Historic England.

Ashkan’s unfaltering commitment to his patients and his tireless research into advancing treatments for brain cancer,” she said.

Completed in 1989 it comprises two semicircular buildings finished in deep blue glazed brick situated opposite each other on either side of Queen Elizabeth Street, near Shad Thames.

It is mostly residential, with around 300 apartments in both buildings.

Old Kent Road firm that makes trolleys and trays awarded Royal Warrant

A TROLLEY and tray-making company on the Old Kent Road is celebrating receiving a Royal Warrant.

Kaymet London Limited started life in 1947, in the basement of an Elephant and Castle radio shop owned by the Schreiber family, producing metal casing.

The company achieved success after WW2 making metal products including cocktail sets and ash trays, but became best known for their signature trays and trolleys, made from spun, anodised aluminium, which gained popularity throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s.

Five years ago, 55-year-old Mark Brearley, wife Ivana Milanovic, and brother John Brearley, took over the business after a chance encounter saw Mr Brearley visit the Kaymet factory and buy a tray for his partner.

At the time, Mr Brearley was working on a project for the London Mayor’s office, listing London’s independent businesses, and his research took him to the tray-maker.

A few months later, the company’s owner Ken Schreiber, got in touch asking if he was interested in taking it over.

Five years later, sales have tripled, and Mr Schreiber is still working as general manager after an overhaul saw the company change tack and focus on building its reputation as a heritage brand, celebrating its history of iconic designs.

An array of brightly coloured Kaymet trays are now stocked in highend retailers like Fortnum and Mason and Harrods, and used in restaurants and hotels like the Ledbury in Notting Hill.

The company was awarded its royal warrant this month, after committing

to continue producing high-quality products that are as environmentally and socially sustainable as possible.

They also produced evidence their trays and hot plates had serviced up food to the royal households, including Balmoral and Buckingham Palace, and on the royal yacht, SS Gothic, as part of Elizabeth II’s world Coronation tour in 1954.

Mr Brearley says Kaymet is believed to be the sixth Southwark company to be given a royal warrant, with others including Patey’s hat makers, who featured in the News earlier this year, art shippers Constantine, silversmiths Grant MacDonald based in Bankside, French polishers Michenuels in Peckham, and audio goods provider

The factory is based on Ossory Road, near Asda, off the Old Kent Road, in an area where industrial space is increasingly jostling with housing developments.

Mr Brearley, who lives in Forest Hill, said: “Kaymet are proud to have a history of supply to the royal family tracing back nearly 70 years, and now we are delighted to have been granted a royal warrant.

“Soon the royal arms will be on our products, and we look forward to them going up on the Peckham factory, hoping the lion and the unicorn might scare off planners and developers who seem to want rid of us and other industry in Southwark.”

“When we ran out of water the people from the school were amazing.

“They were just relentless in going back and getting more and they were just exceptional people.

“We can’t thank them enough; they didn’t give it a moment’s thought and they were so compassionate.”

Rotherhithe resident Sylvia Pearcey, who lives in Redriff Road, also leapt into action to help runners alongside family and friends.

“People were picking up half drunk bottles of water off the floor,” she said, describing the scene.

“You can imagine the heat and them running along – it was heart-breaking seeing people begging for water.

“They run right past my house so we were like a tag team running in and out with water and ice doing whatever we

could to help them because we felt so sorry for them.”

Casey Penn, deputy headteacher at Peter Hills, added: “As the day went on and got hotter we could see the Buxton people on the opposite side of the road starting to run out of water, so some parents and staff connected the hose and filled up big buckets of water and refilled bottles.

“The runners looked exhausted so the kids gave out cups of water and we did as much as possible.”

Virgin Money London Marathon event director Hugh Brasher said the organisers provided more water per person than any other mass participation marathon in the world and that there were more showers and ice on route than usual.

A ROTHERHITHE school has been praised for abandoning its own fundraiser to help runners during the hottest London Marathon on record after nearby stands ran out of water.

Staff, parents and pupils at Peter Hills Primary School raced to the aid of competitors struggling in the heatwave around mile ten of this year’s marathon, after some stands ran out of water.

They have been praised by event volunteers, runners and the public for abandoning their own school fundraiser for future resources without a second thought, to fill buckets and bottles with water to hand out to passing competitors.

A volunteer on a water stand at the event, who wished to remain anonymous, said:

THE BIG Match is heading to Millwall Football Club, famously known as The Den, for the second time on Saturday 26th May.

The event, now in its 7th year, will see celebrities such as X on the Beach stars Sofia Philippe and Zach Tull as well as Towie's Myles Barnett, who will battle it out in a football match and raise funds for Action for Children and The Brain Tumour Charity.

The event, which is open to the public, has raised over £320,000 for both charities since its inception at Reading’s Madejski Stadium in 2012.

Action for Children supports vulnerable children and young people in the UK and The Brain Tumour Charity is the UK’s largest dedicated brain tumour charity, committed to fighting brain tumours on all fronts through research, awareness and support.

Neil Humphries, 40, who founded the event, said: “After my dad died of a brain tumour in 2012, I needed to do something to help others and raise

awareness of this illness. I’ve been an Action for Children supporter for many years, and not wanting to lose sight of them, I set up the Big Match to support both charities and have now raised in excess of £320,000.”

The day is made up of a hat-trick of individual events: 1) The Big Match Kidz – Children between the ages of 5 and 15 can take part in a free coaching session, at 10.30am, run by Global premier Soccer Coaches, who partner with Valencia FC. Ex professional footballers Tony Cascarino, Phil Coleman and Neil “Razor” Ruddock will also be on hand to offer advice and tips. Parents are asked to help their children set up a Virgin Money Giving page and raise £50 to take part.

2) The Big Match – The main event will kick-off at approximately 1.30pm. You

can watch Action for Children go head to head against The Brain Tumour Charity for the coveted shield.

Teams will be made up of fundraisers, ex professional footballers and celebrities.

AN ENVIRONMENTAL waste clearance company has found a bone of apostle Pope St. Clement during a routine waste haul in central London.

The bone is almost 2,000 years old, and an appeal has been launched to help find an appropriate final resting place for it.

EnviroWaste.co.uk found the bone in a red and gold, wax-sealed case, during a routine collection in central London last year, but workers didn’t realise what they had until it was appraised several days later. The company is now calling on members of the public to help find an appropriate final resting place for the bone.

Measles can be caught at any age, so it is important that you and your child have had two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccination (MMR). As the virus is highly contagious, please do not visit your local hospital or anywhere you could come into contact with other patients – as this will help prevent the spread of the virus.

Across the UK, vaccination levels have fallen in recent years, with an estimated three million children and young people missing out on their MMR vaccinations, according to the National Institute for Clinical Health and Excellence (NICE).

In Southwark, 88.5% of 2 year olds were vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella in 2016-17, which is below the national target of 95%.

Vaccines work by producing antibodies to fight the disease without actually infecting a person with the disease. If a vaccinated person comes into contact with the disease itself, their immune system will recognise it and immediately produce antibodies to stop them from becoming infected.

Throughout the school year, children are exposed to many serious childhood diseases that can be prevented through immunisation. When they get vaccinated against a certain disease, they build up their immunity, making them stronger and more resistant to that disease. That’s why it’s important to keep your family up to date with the recommended vaccines.

Vaccines are thoroughly tested before they are made routinely available. They are also continually monitored, even after they have been introduced to make sure they continue to be safe.

Absolute Hell is absolute hell

anything, Absolute Hell shows that drinking dens of that nature have no reason to exist other than to keep their inhabitants away from the rest of us.

Absolute Hell, too, seemed to lack any reason to exist. Was it about the horrors of the concentration camps?

Was it a diatribe against the outmoded sex laws of the time? Laws that were outrageously ignored by the overt homosexuals that frequented La Vie en Rose? Was it about Labour pushing the Tories out after the war?

Or even about how Indian gurus might be the peaceful way forward?

All these topics were bandied about between people that were either falling over, firing off guns, dying in armchairs or just shouting at each other, and all with no real substance given to the subjects whenever they did crop up in slurred conversation.

There are some excellent performances put in by those who found themselves at the front of the huge stage rather than staggering about at the back, but I don’t want to write any more about them as I am still trying to grab back the time that they took away from my life. At over three hours long this script needs a sharp knife taken to some of it, and a blunt instrument to the rest.

hen Rodney Ackland’s The Pink Room was first performed in 1952 it lost a fortune for the producer, Terence Rattigan, who never spoke to Ackland again, and it virtually ended the theatrewriting career of the play’s author as well, writes Michael Holland.

You would think that would be lesson enough, a fair warning to cut your losses and move on, but no, in 1987 a small theatre in Richmond came across a reworked version of The Pink Room, now more aptly titled as Absolute Hell and in need of some refining and clarification. Its subsequent production had it hailed as

before. No storyline developed, it was just a hotchpotch of drunken bores doing what drunken bores do - They bore.

Yes, there are some great characters in this but a play needs to develop those characters. There was no real insight into Soho’s post-war demimonde society. It is a world that never changes, made up of the louche and those on the fringes of respectability; people who never seem to have a proper job but are always out drinking. And they can still be found in certain pubs and clubs right now. To recreate what I endured just get locked in a Wetherspoons for 4 hours. If

While Ingram is off soldiering his wife Diana spends her time as pub quiz fanatic with others of her ilk.

When Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? arrives on TV they become obsessed with getting on it to be millionaires. They study the best time to phone up to get on the contestants’ list; they build a machine to practise their thinking speed skills.

This enables them to get on the show and into the hot seat twice, winning £32,000 both times. Now it is the turn of the Major so they have others in the ‘conspiracy’ placed in the audience to give assisting signals when he manages to get on. The red flag was raised by the production crew who were aware of seeing the same people in the audience and in the ‘Fastest Finger First’ pre-game section. The first half ends with Ingram and his coconspirators being found guilty. An electronic vote among the audience found 87% of us agreed.

The second act takes a different tack.

We see the quiz fans swatting up on their general knowledge, and working hard at getting on the show like the obsessives they are. We see Chris Tarrant in the dock saying he wasn’t aware of any wrongdoing during the recording of the game in question, and others in the audience saying they didn’t suspect anything. We now get a different view of how these quizzers are preoccupied with game shows, and an insight into the criteria for getting on one. I will never watch one of those quizzes the same way again.

Final answer

LIKE AT the live recording of a TV show, there is a warm up man on first to get the crowd in a happy mood with weak jokes and cringy audience participation for Quiz, the story of Charles Ingram winning the top prize on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, but then having it swiftly taken away.

But who was in the wrong, writes Michael Holland.

We all know the programme - It was the most successful quiz show of all time - And we all know when a million pound was first won by Judith Keppel. Though the only other big winner most people are aware of is when in 2001 Major Charles Ingram was on the front page of the papers for cheating, and subsequently arrested and put on trial at Southwark Crown Court for ‘procuring the execution of a valuable security by deception’.

James Graham’s play takes us cleverly through both sides of the argument, for and against Ingram’s guilt, in a process that was half court trial, half game show. The first act opens with his army life and theatrical leanings. There is a splendid skit with

‘a remarkable rediscovery of both play and playwright’. Well that might be the case for some, but not for me and the many others who had stopped politely clapping and had headed for the exits long before the 28 actors in this mishmash of mayhem had finished taking their bows at the end.

The first act was fine, with lots of people in La Vie en Rose club getting drunk, getting abusive, getting pulled and laying a foundation for a potentially great second half; we couldn’t wait to get back in after the interval. But then it was just lots of people getting drunk, getting abusive, getting pulled and all going nowhere.

smarmy. Stephanie Street as Diane Ingram is scarily lifelike, and there are ‘cameos’ from Jim Bowen, Des O’Connor, Leslie Crowther and Hilda Ogden, but it is Keir Charles’ brutal impression of Tarrant that takes the top prize here.

I had never seen Kander and Ebb’s iconic musical about the female murderers who found themselves on the front pages of Prohibition era tabloids, but when it is hailed as the most successful musical of all time then you know it must have something worth seeing. I wish I had seen it sooner.

The premise is that killers can get a Not Guilty verdict if they bribe Mama Morton, who runs the cell block. Mama then gets on the phone to top lawyer Billy Flynn, who demands $5000 to get the murderesses in the newspapers before he defends them in court. This, hopefully, is followed by freedom.

The action began with Roxie Hart putting three bullets into delivery man Fred Casely for refusing her amorous advances. In jail Roxie then vies for Billy Flynn’s attention with Velma Kelly. The two of them battle it out via the medium of sass and dance, accompanied and supported by a tremendous troupe of terpsichoreans, all evoking the spirit of Bob Fosse - the man whose iconic moves first gave this musical its steamy ambience - recreated by Ann Reinking.

Ultimately, the accolades must go to Josefina Gabrielle (Velma)and Sarah Soetaert (Roxie) for terrific performances that delivered foxy and funny in equal measure. Big name draw Cuba Gooding Jnr (Billy Flynn) gave a fine display of someone who has got it going on, while showing off some tricky footwork and a decent singing voice. He often looked like he was having the absolute time of his life, and I wasn’t sure if that was his character or because Cuba Gooding Jnr was really loving every minute of it.

Chicago jumps quickly from one highlight to another, so it is difficult to pick out something special. The excellent Cell Block Tango gave the girls a chance to tell us what they were in for; I didn’t hold out much hope for the wife whose cheating husband ran into her carving knife ten times… ‘He had it coming,’ her jailbird friends chorused, but with Billy Flynn on the case, you never can tell! And behind all that was a great orchestra who knocked out ragtime and jazz like Al Capone had a tommy gun aimed at them.

Chicago has it all, and if you are one of the few people like me who haven’t yet seen it, now’s your chance to get banged up with this show.

Fine dining on the Edge

THE SLIDING shutters were open to allow a breeze from Brockwell Park to flow through Park’s Edge Bar & Kitchen.

This, the papers were quick to tell us, was the hottest April since the last one, so a little breeze, along with a nice cold Canopy IPA all the way from the brewery one hundred yards away, was just about perfect, writes Michael Holland...

Nina sipped on her merlot and spoke about the wonders of seasonal weather: ‘Just last week we were clearing away snow with hats, coats and gloves on and now we’re looking at hundreds of people

enjoying the evening sun in the park.’ I thought she was about to break into a poem about lonely clouds and daffodils, so I chatted with restaurant manager Amber instead, who brought me up to speed on the day’s specials.

We began our meal with homemade brown soda bread with salted honey butter, and that butter absolutely turned it into something else. Amber told us the Senior Sous Chef, and resident ‘gastronomical scientist’ Matthew Carrizales created it. Soon after we shared some very nice charcuterie that had been sourced from Norwood, and a warm Smoked Salmon dish that was quite succulent.

Nina had now moved on to a Douro Tinto, while I went with Amber’s recommendation - a fruity, refreshing Picpoul.

Park’s Edge has a decor that hovers between cool and inviting. It can work for romantic liaisons just as well as for a friends catch-up. There was a couple there for burgers and book-reading, others for a glass of

wine, and some of us for the full à la carte.

It was in the main courses that we saw the skills of Matthew and his Head Chef, Tom Spinks, himself a SE Londoner. It was with the Red Gurnard, Black Rice, Plantain, Moilee Sauce and Peas that you could see little touches that created a feel of fine dining in this informal setting. The plantain crisps were a wonder; the black rice offset the luminosity of the sauce, which gave up its own surprises of hot spice and sweetness. This was gastronomical science at its best. Nina went for the Smoked Chicken with Beans. A winning combination. We also added a watercress salad because Nina likes a bit of greenery, and triple-cooked chips because I can’t resist them.

The salad had a strange, almost exotic addition that we could not identify other than saying it was rather delicious and meat based. We discovered that it was bone marrow!

And what do I need to say about great chips? This is England - we know what constitutes a good chip,

and this was a good chip.

The wine was doing its stuff, our bellies were full, Amber brought the dessert menu so we decided on the cooked banana, with popcorn, salted caramel and ice cream to share, but pleaded for a brief hiatus in the feasting before we tucked in to more food. She agreed and brought a bottle of Moscato d’Asti, a sparkling sweet wine to accompany the last course. This truly was an amazing wine; I need to track that down for home use. And it certainly made the banana dish something very special.

Tom the chef came to say hello, which gave us both a chance to heap praise on him. He said how they endeavour to source as much produce as they can locally vegetables obtained from the nursery in Brockwell Park opposite, and meats from Dulwich.

We liked everything about Park’s Edge. Yes, we pushed the boat out, as it were, but with brunch, lunch and bar menus to choose from, there is something for all pockets and all occasions.

The gallant seaman

A week on from the annivesary of Zeebrugge raids, we take a look at the heroic actions of Seaman Albert McKenzie and his brothers-in-arms

THE NUMBER 994 is an inauspicious one, yet on April 23 this number formed part of the centenary commemorations of the most audacious naval action of the Great War - the raid at Zeebrugge on the Belgian coast.

The action is not well-known today, yet there were eight Victoria Crosses awarded for an action lasting 80 minutes.

One of those – number 994 – went to Able Seaman Albert McKenzie, for the part he played in the raid.

Street, Bermondsey, and joined the Royal Navy in 1914.

On April 23, 1918, at the age of just nineteen, he was part of a British raid on the Mole – a milelong sea wall in the Belgian port Zeebrugge which was used by the Germans.

Since early 1915 Bruges had been the base for German raids into the Channel and attacks on merchant ships. Food rationing was introduced in Britain in December 1917 and so acute were the shipping losses that something decisive had to be done or Britain would be starved into submission.

A plan was drawn up to sink concrete-filled ‘block ships’ Thetis, Intrepid and Iphigenia at Zeebrugge, and Sirius and Brilliant at Ostend - in the mouths of the canals to stop German vessels from leaving the port.

A diversion was planned involving the cruiser HMS Vindictive, which would use special grappling hooks and fourteen hinged ramps to drop down 200 Bluejacket sailors and 700 Royal Marines to attack the German gun positions along the heavily-defended Zeebrugge Mole.

After two false starts, finally the task force of 136 ships prepared to set sail on April 22.

Once on the open seas, the battle

signal was sent out from his flagship HMS Warwick.

On the ships a rum ration was distributed at 8pm followed by soup, then cocoa ‘made to the correct naval specification’ - unaided, the spoon must stand upright.

At 11.15pm the Royal Marines raiding party fixed bayonets.

Able Seaman McKenzie checked his Lewis gun one final time.

As in the preceding weeks, shortly before 11.30pm ‘monitor’ ships began bombarding Zeebrugge and Ostend.

Twenty minutes later vessels began releasing ‘artificial fog’ and ‘smoke floats’ were dropped into the sea.

This time the plan was different.

German lookouts expected the monitors to withdraw but instead saw the approaching task force; too late the batteries along the coast and Mole opened fire.

Almost immediately things began to go wrong. Vindictive’s forecastle was hit by two shells, killing the howitzer crew and replacements.

Two further shells hit the hull below the bridge, and the mortar and Lewis gun teams were shot to pieces.

At 12.01am - just into St George’s Day - Vindictive’s port side shuddered against the Mole, several hundred yards from her intended

position.

Bamford readied his men.

McKenzie shouldered his Lewis gun.

The Captain aboard the Daffodil, despite serious head wounds, ordered his ship to ‘nudge’ Vindictive nearer to the wall and three platoons of Royal Marines were led onto the Mole at 12.50am.

As McKenzie’s Victoria Cross citation reads: “On the night of the operation he landed on the Mole with his machine gun in the face of great difficulties and did very good work, using his gun to the utmost advantage.

“He advanced down the Mole with Lieutenant-Commander Harrison, who with most of his party was killed, and accounted for several of the enemy running from a shelter to a destroyer alongside the Mole.

“This very gallant seaman was severely wounded whilst working his gun in an exposed position.”

McKenzie slowly recovered from his wounds received at Zeebrugge, but later died from septic pneumonia at Chatham Naval Hospital on November 3, 1918 – a week before the Armistice.

He is buried at Camberwell Old Cemetery and his medal is on display at the Imperial War Museum.

The scheme came about after the ‘News’ approached English Heritage to get more of our history recognised, only to be told that most of our buildings would not qualify as they were destroyed in the blitz and post war era.

Working in partnership with Southwark Heritage Association and Southwark Council, over 50 of our own blue plaques have been erected.

DAVID HAYE has boldly predicted Tony Bellew “will not hear the final bell” ahead of their rematch at the O2 Arena on Saturday night.

Bermondsey’s Haye, 37, was at a news conference in Liverpool this week before he hopes to avenge his eleventh-round stoppage in April last year after he ruptured his Achilles tendon midway through the bout.

“I'm just going to do what I do, and enjoy it,” Haye said. “I'm relaxed. I'm ready. It may not be early. It may be very late. I might aim to do something I've never done before.

“I always aim to take people out early but I might try something different. But it will be a knockout, a TKO, a referee stoppage or the towel will come in. He will not hear the final bell. Bellew's trainer Dave Coldwell is a compassionate man. He will need to be vigilant for his man on Saturday night.”

Haye’s manager, Adam Morallee, also attempted to provoke Bellew’s fans in attendance, though the Liverpool fighter was seen laughing as Morallee spoke.

“The person who said history always repeats itself was wrong,” Morallee said.

They were less rampant in the second game but did enough for a comfortable 31 win, Maxwell this time hitting a double

and Tyler Andrews adding one. Manager Tommy Mccloud said: “I was extremely pleased with the performances they give and the way they brought what they are taught in training into the game.”

Fish’s under-7 side were away at an excellent Dulwich outfit. The hosts went 2-0 up and some excellent goalkeeping saw them deny Finlay Linihan and Anton

Sinclair. The next goal was always going to be important and it fell to Dulwich who made it 3-0.

Henry Tyler then hit the post before Dominic Kamara grabbed a consolation.

In the second game Kamara again went close on a number of occasions and Tyler also tested the Dulwich stopper.

The home side again took the lead but Mason Mulholland scored the equaliser.

Coach Paul Harbert was pleased with his side’s displays, saying: “The boys were outstanding against a very good side.”

The Lions’ Premier League dream must wait after Riverside defeat

ALL GOOD things must end.

When it came down to it, Fulham could go and recruit a £13million striker in Aleksandar Mitrovic to give them the guarantee of the goals they needed.

Middlebrough, having dispensed with Garry Monk, went and hired Tony Pulis, someone with vast experience managing in the pressure of the Premier League, and he has got the best out of a talented squad.

For large parts of the last two games, Millwall have huffed and puffed but the difference in the quality of Fulham and Middlesbrough was evident.

It would have been a lot of fun going into another play-off campaign for one of the top prizes in not just England but world football: promotion to the Premier League and the inflow of cash that brings.

It would have been a lot of fun seeing what Millwall might have done with the £100million cheque that would have landed on the table of Chief Executive Steve Kavanagh.

But it would probably have brought its own problems. Some of Millwall’s firstteam squad earn between £3,000 and

£5,000 per week. This season, the average top-flight weekly wage passed the £50,000 mark. So just to recruit an average Premier League player would have cost multiple times what Millwall’s top earners pocket per week.

Middlesbrough spent over £40million on players this season and they will probably pump a lot more into their squad if they are promoted.

For Millwall, thoughts now turn to a pivotal summer transfer window. Can they repeat the success of last summer and secure their first-choice targets?

Expectation is going to be higher next season and supporters will probably now hope for a sustained assault on the playoffs. That will also bring its own challenges, particularly if they start next season as they did this, with no wins in the first four games.

But before all that next Sunday against Aston Villa is a chance for supporters to pay tribute to the team. Few could have expected before the season started that the side would be going into the last day assured of a top-half finish. Sure, there is disappointment at the way the last two games have turned out given what had seemed possible, but it was more than mission accomplished and it will be

interesting to see what changes are made to the squad during the summer.

On Saturday there were troubling scenes at the end of the game when Boro fans tried to goad the away support.

Boro had secured their place in the playoffs after Britt Assombalonga fired them in front in the first half before a defensive mix-up between Jordan Archer and defender Jake Cooper allowed Jonny Howson to tap in a second.

Millwall are a point behind Preston and three points off Derby, who have a plus-nine better goal difference.

After the final whistle a large group of home fans ran towards the away end and objects were thrown by both sets of supporters. Former Boro midfielder Neil Maddison condemned the scenes.

“I don’t want to see that, get off the pitch. You can’t go and goad the Millwall supporters,” Maddison said.

“I’m looking at the far side and it’s not pretty. The pitch invasion and inciting the Millwall fans is wrong.

Get off the pitch. It’s taken a little bit away from the game.

“It’s just not right, it’s so sad.

“We celebrate as a club together, as a team, as fans together, you don’t want to see that.

“It’s absolutely shocking at times to see that. It’s just stupid, crazy, there’s no need for it. You’ve won the game.

“Like I said before, get home, get home, go to the local pubs, enjoy this evening, enjoy the weekend, it’s been good for us, it’s been a good weekend.

There’s no need for that, there’s no need at all, it’s not football, seeing things being thrown.”

It wasn’t how Millwall wanted this campaign to pan out, but Lions boss Neil Harris will, for the first time since he took over, have a full summer to plan for the following season.

Harris was already planning for this season on the pitch after last year’s playoff final, and there is no doubt foundations have been laid for the next campaign.

A new striker in the mould of Steve Morison is likely to be a priority. So is a left winger if Ben Marshall can’t be secured.

Harris may be tempted to look at the goalkeeper situation while more depth at centre-back is also key.

That is all to be seen, but for now Lions fans will take the opportunity to salute their team’s efforts this season on the final day next Sunday.

Skipper knows club will be on lookout for a younger version

STEVE MORISON knows Millwall could be out to recruit a younger version of their captain this summer – but he is up for the personal challenges that will bring.

Morison will turn 35 next August, the first month of the season, and he admitted he will have to work hard in pre-season to give himself the best chance to keep his place in the side.

The Lions signed Tom Elliott last summer to provide competition for Morison and Lee Gregory. But Millwall’s skipper was as influential as ever, playing 47 times in all competitions after 107 appearances in the previous two seasons.

Morison triggered an extension clause during this season which means he will be with the club until at least the summer of 2019.

There isn’t another clause in his current deal and he will have to prove himself in the next campaign to add another year to his Millwall playing career.

Morison admitted he is looking forward to seeing what additions boss Neil Harris will make this summer.

“I’m sure the gaffer will have his people in place to try to bring in players he will

want to replace those that leave and players to make us stronger,” Morison said. “It will be interesting to watch what changes will take place over the summer.

“Hopefully a big centre-forward doesn’t come in and take my place! Nah, I’m not stupid enough to think the club won’t be trying to replace me with someone who can come in and do the things I can do to the same standard or better.

“It’s healthy to have that kind of competition to push us all. I know that I’ll respond to the challenge, it helps me to be better. We brought big Tom in last

summer to push me and Greggs and I’ve ended up playing almost 50 games this season.

“That’s what happened in January when the gaffer added to the squad and it gave us another push to climb the table and go close to the play-offs.”

Millwall have enjoyed a superb season, tinged only with disappointment after they reached the play-off spots with four games left but ran out of steam during a tough run-in.

They could still get more than 70 points, which would be their highest total at this level since 2002.

Millwall’s previous two stints in the second tier lasted five seasons, and Morison admitted next season will be more difficult, but he is confident they can hold on to their key players, who are sure to attract the attention of other clubs.

“We’ve got a chairman who is not going to sell unless people offer stupid money,” Morison insisted. “Unless players decide they want to force a move.

But we don’t have anyone at our club that would do anything like that. Everyone enjoys being here and I’m confident we’ll keep them and add to the squad.

“It’s going to be more difficult next

Several youngsters who have struggled to figure at first-team level or haven’t made the impact they would have wished out on loan will be let go and begin the tough process of overcoming the disappointment and finding new clubs.

Sid Nelson and Kris Twardek have been in and out of the Chesterfield and Carlisle sides, respectively, in League Two and are both out of contract at the end of June.

Alfie Pavey, released last summer, has shown how careers can be rebuilt lower down the English football ladder. He initially joined Welling United before moving to Dartford last August. The 22year-old striker went on to score 22 goal in 38 league games to help his club into the play-offs and he was also named National League South Player of the

Season.

Harry Toffolo hasn’t played a firstteam game since joining from Norwich in January, but boss Neil Harris has spoken highly of the impact he has made in training and the full-back will hope that he has done enough to earn a contract.

Ben Marshall and Jason Shackell will see their loan deals end next week.

Marshall has made a big impact and the Lions would like to sign him on a permanent deal, but Stoke City have been linked with a move for their former player and would be able to offer far higher wages whether they are in the Premier League or Millwall’s rivals in the Championship next season.

Nineteen of Millwall’s first-team squad are contracted to the club beyond this summer.

season. We’re not going to be an unknown quantity anymore unless we have an overhaul of the squad or change the way we play.

“But the odds are we will make a few changes to personnel and we will play a similar way, we’ve just got to do it better.

“We probably won’t have that surprise element we had to our run this year.

We’re going to have to run and fight for every single point.

“The second seasons at this level are often more of a struggle, but we will be determined to have a fourth successful year under the gaffer.”

Who’s in and who’s out at Millwall as planning for next season begins

WITH MILLWALL’S season all but over thoughts will have turned to planning for next season.

In the last three summers, Millwall have announced their retained list and those that have not been offered new deals the week after the end of the season.

The first-team regular squad members out of contract at the end of June are Lee Gregory, Byron Webster and Tim Cahill.

Cahill is likely to have played his last game for the club as he serves the second game of a three-match ban this weekend.

Gregory is discussing a new deal and it would be a surprise if an agreement was not reached.

It is trickier for Webster, 31, as he hasn’t had time to prove his fitness after suffering a cruciate ligament injury last September. He only returned to full contact training this week.

AFTER ALL the excitement of the last couple of months when a third successive play-off campaign became a possibility, Sunday’s meeting with Aston Villa is set to be something of an anti-climax.

Only a miraculous sequence of results would see Millwall finish sixth, while Steve Bruce’s Villa have already secured fourth place in the Championship.

Just two weeks ago the Lions could have gone four points clear of Derby by beating Fulham, but it was always going to be a big ask given their difficult run-in.

Another way of looking at this fixture is that the side can enjoy it with little pressure on them beyond trying to finish in seventh place. They are a point behind Preston, who host a Burton side on Sunday that is desperate for the points that would see them stay up. Burton are 22nd, level on points with Barnsley above them.

Lions boss Neil Harris could give run-outs to those players who have been on the fringes of the team and the squad recently. Hutch pays tribute to teammates after claiming club prize

SHAUN HUTCHINSON revealed that when he signed for Millwall he was told the clubs’ fans would cheer sliding tackles as much as top-corner goals – and he hasn’t been disappointed.

Hutchinson was speaking after being named Millwall player of the year at the club’s annual awards on Sunday.

Lions boss Neil Harris has been successful with his pitches to his first-choice transfer targets in his time in charge, and his message to Hutchinson in 2016 about what Millwall supporters liked was simple.

Hutchinson has endeared himself to fans for his uncompromising and aggressive approach. He has also

proved a durable barrier in the Lions’ defence, starting all 45 league games this season ahead of the last fixture of the campaign against Aston Villa.

The former Fulham defender has also captained the side this season in the absence of Steve Morison.

“I’m really proud,” Hutchinson said. “When I signed here I was told the fans would cheer tackles as much as they did someone sticking the ball in the top corner, and so it has proved.

“It’s a big honour for me. To win this award, voted for by the fans, as well as the Junior Lions one too, really caps off a great year for me personally.

“But it has been a massive team effort. All year the boys have been magnificent.”

Jed Wallace finished second and Morison third in the voting.

STEVE MORISON would like the opportunity to lead his team on a lap of honour on Sunday – but is convinced he won’t get the chance.

Millwall face Aston Villa at The Den with the club announcing it would be a sell-out in south Bermondsey this weekend.

That was before the Lions’ play-off chances effectively ended with last Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough, though they can still finish seventh and want to surpass 70 points this season.

Millwall fans entered the pitch after the last league game of last season, after the 3-0 defeat to Oxford, denying the players the chance to walk around the ground to thank supporters.

Morison was also annoyed that the same thing happened at Wembley after the play-off final win over Bradford.

After the last home game of their regular season, hundreds of Middlesbrough supporters invaded the pitch last weekend and then appeared to goad the away fans.

Den supporters also encroached onto the pitch after seeing their side score a last-minute winner to knock Leicester City out of the FA Cup last season.

Asked by the News this week if he expected there to be some who intended to do the same this weekend, Morison replied: “There is no chance of no pitch invasion because they cannot work it out that we would like to thank them, to show our appreciation for their efforts all season travelling up and down the country to support us and for going to The Den to support us.

“Instead they want to come on and get selfies and rip our shirts off.

“I know it’s probably their way to show their appreciation for us.”

Meanwhile, Morison and boss Neil Harris rallied the squad after last Saturday’s disappointment.

Morison urged the players not to let it affect their preparations this week as they aim to finish a memorable season on a high.

Morison said: “I said to them it’s been a good season.

“We should be disappointed, now don’t let it affect next week in front of packed stadium. We should use that to go and enjoy what we’ve done and also realise we’ll be better again next year, though it will be twice as hard for us.”

Cahill is one of a number of squad members out of contract this summer and at 38 could call time on his professional playing career. He will hope that is after playing in his fourth World Cup with Australia in Russia.

Harris hailed the impact of his former team-mate, who re-joined the club in January almost twelve years after leaving. Cahill featured ten times as a substitute in his second spell, helping Millwall rise from fourteenth to sixth before the 3-0 defeat to Fulham.

Cahill – whose family are based in New York – was retrospectively banned after that game for elbowing Ryan Fredericks and would only have had a chance to play for the club again if they had reached the play-offs.

Instead, it is doubtful he will add to his 261 Lions appearances.

“I’ve not had conversations with players yet, I will be doing that in the next few weeks,” Harris said.

“Timmy purely came in until the end of the season and he made a fantastic impact around the club, it’s no coincidence we were unbeaten for so long.

“But his family situation will dictate what comes next for him. He came in at vital time for us.

It would have been lovely to see him score again at The Den but it wasn’t to be.

“I’ll have a conversation with Timmy after the end of the season.”
