THE DUKE and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen Evelina London Children’s Hospital as their charity of choice to celebrate the birth of their third child.

The couple, who welcomed their new son on St George’s Day, have asked anyone celebrating the new royal arrival to make a donation to the children’s hospital, in lieu of sending gifts, leaving the team at Evelina “absolutely delighted”.

A BERMONDSEY building has been transformed into a hotel you may not want to book a romantic rendezvous in.

The building has been taken over by an immersive theatre production inspired by a real life 19th century American serial killer.

The Hollow Hotel production, staged by theatre company differencENGINE, is based on the “murder hotel” designed by H.H.Holmes, who is believed to have murdered 200 people.

In the experience, guests are invited to the grand reopening of a hotel which has been shut for some time.

As they journey through a maze of hidden passageways, they can control their own experience, making decisions along the way as they try to escape.

You can even ‘die’ during the production – but you’ll still have to find a way out.

“After its unexpected closure, the Hollow Hotel is reopening its doors and invites you to its grand reopening,” guests are told.

“But if you listen to the whispers in its winding corridors, you might lose yourself as each turn entices you to

“Journey through a maze of hidden passageways that will either lay you to rest, or lead you further into the hotel’s dark heart.

DifferencENGINE is an immersive and interactive theatre company cofounded by Jon Cooper and Andrew Somerville in 2014.

Their debut show Heist was initially meant to run for three weeks but instead ran for nine months and sold out within minutes.

That production saw audiences break into a building, and attempt to steal a painting without being caught while interacting through headsets and cameras.

The Hollow Hotel runs for 60-90 minutes without an interval and is suitable for ages 18+ It is currently running on the top floor of Block F in the Biscuit Factory, Clements Road, SE16 4DU, until June 17.

MP’s office evacuated over suspicious package BERMONDSEY

MP NEIL Coyle’s office was evacuated and police were called after a suspicious package was recieved last week.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP’s constituency office in Jamaica Road, Bermondsey, was emptied after a member of staff opened the envelope last Wednesday, April 18.

Senior case worker and constituency communications manager Mark Lewis said the “bizarre” letter, which came from a sender in Honolulu, contained

brown flakes, tissue paper with something inside, and a MoneyGram receipt for 50 cents – but no note.

“After the postman delivered it I got the letter opener because that’s what the House of Commons guidance told us to use and I opened it and when I looked at it I thought it was unusual that it was from Honolulu,” he told the News.

“When I saw the brown flakes, tissue paper, and receipt and no letter I thought it was a bit weird.

“We had four police officers turn up within half an hour of receiving the envelope.

“They weren’t quite sure what it was

but they’ve taken it away and they are going to look into it.

“This is the first time we’ve had something like this and we’ve got security here – it was just a bizarre day and nobody knows what it was.”

Labour MP Mr Coyle said the incident made an “even clearer case for better safety for constituency offices for all MPs”.

“Everything that comes through Westminster is security scanned but constituency offices have very little protection,” he said.

RESIDENTS IN Borough say their estate feels like a “prison” after the council built fences around some of their greenspace to tackle dog fouling.

The council’s solution to dog mess persistently left on two green areas at Dodson and Amigo estate was to erect “aggressive-looking ten-foot fences, making the estate feel like a prison”, according to resident Alison Blackstone.

Southwark Council has said it originally erected three foot high fences but dog owners just climbed over and continued to let their pets foul on the grass.

Alison, 57, who is secretary of the estate’s tenants’ and residents’ association, said she was concerned about the council not holding any consultation on the decision and that the problem would just be moved to other green areas instead.

“This sledgehammer 'solution' has all arisen due to problems with dog fouling on the estate,” she said.

“It’s not a solution; for us the solution is to try and encourage people to take more responsibility and Southwark’s solution is just to fence in an attractive green area.

“We’ve been planting in certain areas just to make them look more attractive and speaking to people on the estate who’ve got dogs and asking if they can use different areas where people don’t live on the ground floor.

“By fencing off these two areas, it just moves the problem to elsewhere on the estate and people can still get into the area through a gate.”

Alison said the first fence was put up around a grassy area last Tuesday, and another on Monday but residents weren’t consulted.

to the estate they don’t have to speak to us or ask us what we want, so I’m really concerned about that,” she said.

“We on the estate believe we have no voice with Southwark Council and that any good will between the TRA and them has irretrievably broken down.”

Michael Scorer, Southwark Council’s director of housing, said: “We have been working with the TRA for some time to try to prevent dog fouling on this open space.

“We sent wardens to patrol the area and we’re looking at other ways we could discourage dog fouling and encourage dog owners to clear up the mess.

“At the request of the TRA, we put up a three-foot fence to deter irresponsible dog owners from allowing their pets on the grass, but unfortunately some dog

owners climbed over with their pets and continued to allow them to foul the area.

“Following further discussions with the TRA about the ongoing problem we agreed to erect a higher fence.

“Although the council ordered a new higher fence to be installed, the contractor mistakenly added extra height to the existing fence instead.

“We have told our contractor to rectify this as soon as possible and we are sorry for the upset this has caused. The new fence will be under six feet high.

“We strongly encourage the irresponsible minority of dog owners who currently allow their dogs to foul this, or any, area to pick up their dog’s waste and dispose of it properly and to keep our borough clean to be enjoyed by their neighbours.”

A police spokesperson said officers were investigating the incident as an allegation of malicious communication.

“Police in Southwark were called to reports of a suspicious package being delivered to premises on Jamaica road, SE16, at approximately 12.15pm on April 18,” said the spokesperson.

“There are no reported injuries and no arrests have been made.

“The item found has been assessed and

was found not to be dangerous.”

A suspicious letter containing brown powder also sparked an emergency response last Tuesday, April 17, after it was sent to Romsey and Southampton North MP Caroline Nokes’ constituency office.

Hampshire police later confirmed the substance was not hazardous after carrying out tests.

Four Labour Muslim MPs also received suspicious packages containing what police described as a low-level noxious substance, as well as letters advocating violence against Muslims last month.

Leaders clash at election hustings

THE LEADERS of the main political parties in Southwark went head-to-head over issues including affordable housing, youth centres, and crime during a sometimes heated election hustings.

The event, held at Southwark Cathedral on Tuesday, saw current Labour council leader Peter John face questions from the audience alongside Anood Al-Samerai, leader of the opposition Liberal Democrats, and Green co-chair Eleanor Margolies.

London Bridge and West Bermondsey Conservative candidate Toby Eckersley stood in for local party leader Michael Mitchell, who he said was out campaigning in Dulwich Village.

Setting out their stools, Peter John said he believed Labour had kept the promises it made to the public in both 2010 and 2014, while Lib Dem Anood Al-Samerai told those gathered that local politics was “very important” and she believed power should lie with the individuals and communities in Southwark.

Tory Toby Eckersley admitted “it will be a surprise if I win” in London Bridge and West Bermondsey, but said his party would argue for lower council tax, and agreed powers should be restored to the community. And Southwark Greens cochair Eleanor Margolies argued: "Southwark Labour isn't doing anything nearly like enough” went it came to dangerous levels of air pollution.

"Over the last two years one in four new homes in Southwark has been sold abroad – that is a scandal for Southwark people desperate for housing,” Ms Al-

Samerai said.

"We need to stop selling them off and demolishing but more importantly we need to create mixed communities and that's what's been destroyed by this Labour council over the last eight years.”

Pointing to the Aylesbury Estate, in Walworth, where the council has been embroiled in a stand-off with leaseholders who say they haven’t been offered enough for their homes to be able to stay in the area when the estate is demolished, Mr Eckersley said: "I'm not in favour of destroying socially-rented homes.”

Wading in on the debate, Mr John said: "We carried on as a country building tens of thousands of council homes up until 1983 when it was a Tory government under Margaret Thatcher.

"Last year we built something like 1,500 council homes across the country but it's stored up a massive problem we are trying to sort out now.”

Ms Margolies said there was a lot more Southwark could do – such as looking at models like the self-build co-operative in Lewisham. And both Ms Al-Samerai and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s brother Piers Corbyn, who sat in the audience, both accused Southwark Labour of making the housing crisis worse.

When the topic of youth centres was raised, Ms Al-Samerai added that the Labour administration cut the budget for youth services by 50 per cent in 2016 – and a month later introduced ‘golden goodbye’ allowances for cabinet members. In response, Mr John said they were “theoretical figures at present time” and “let's have the debate when the money goes out the door”.

THE DUKE and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen Evelina London Children’s Hospital as their charity of choice to celebrate the birth of their third child.

The couple, who welcomed their new son shortly after 11am on Monday’s St George’s Day, have asked anyone celebrating the new royal arrival to make a donation to the children’s hospital, in lieu of sending gifts, leaving the team at Evelina “absolutely delighted”.

The couple has formed a connection with the hospital on Westminster Bridge Road through a number of visits. Last year, the Duchess formally opened Ronald McDonald House Evelina London, and both the Duke and Duchess have spent time meeting patients, their families and staff at the hospital earlier this year.

Marian Ridley, Evelina London’s director, said: “It has been an honour to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Evelina London three times in the past fifteen months.

“Their warmth and immediate sense of connection with the children and

families that they met left a deep impression on all of us.

“Their visits brought joy, sympathy and appreciation and I know this gesture will mean a huge amount to our staff, patients and families.

“We are very grateful for their support, and wish their family a happy and healthy future together.”

The hospital confirmed all donations will go towards improving care for sick children, including funding life-saving research, the latest medical equipment and “all the little things that help make a stay in hospital less scary for young people”.

Widow tells of ‘devastation’ over ashes theft DULWICHE

THE ELDERLY widow whose late husband’s ashes were stolen in a burglary just three weeks after his cremation has told of her devastation, as police hope the News’ appeal will help them be returned.

As reported last week, the woman in her 80s, who lives on Dovedale Road in East Dulwich, was the victim of the theft on Monday, April 9 this year.

Upon arriving home she saw two men running away from her house carrying large, dark-coloured bags, and then discovered her home had been burgled, with jewellery, a cheque book and a laptop missing – and her husband’s ashes.

The victim, who does not want to be named, told the News: "It has made me think that, even with added security, I don’t want to leave the house and I’m not sleeping well because I’m worried.

“Everyone has been very supportive, but I’m definitely mentally down about the

events. I’m sure this would affect anybody, it’s a horrible thing to think of someone in your house but thank god I wasn’t in when they broke in.

"It doesn’t get any easier but I’m glad I’ve got the support of my family."

PC Stoodley, from Peckham police, is investigating the case and appealing for anyone with information to come forward, anonymously or otherwise.

He said: “The victim is a very nice lady, brilliant to talk to and with a positive outlook but this has been a real shock.

“We want to do as much as possible to maximise the chances of getting these ashes back.

“I would like to think they had picked them up and ran out of the door without knowing what they actually were.”

The ashes were kept hidden at home as they were soon to be scattered to commemorate the deceased. Some were to be sprinkled on a rose tree in the victim's back garden to commemorate her husband, who had fought in World War Two. The remainder were to be scattered

on his parents’ grave at Honor Oak Cemetery.

The couple, who had lived on Dovedale Road for 37 years, met in 1954 at dancing classes at Goodrich School.

rope handles. Old coins, alcohol, jewellery - including a pearl and diamond platinum ring - a cheque book and a laptop were also stolen. The jewellery included gifts from the woman’s 21st birthday.

Police are appealing for information, and in particular want to emphasise that anyone can get in touch anonymously.

The two men were seen running in the

direction of Mundania Road, and were described as having medium builds and short hair.

One wore a navy blue anorak and the other a dark-coloured coat.

Tributes at Bermondsey statue as well as in Belgium, where seaman earned his VC

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Zeebrugge raid, where the young seaman’s heroism later earned him the Victoria Cross, a ceremonial paving stone was unveiled at the statue bulit in his honour in Tower Bridge Road on Friday, April 20.

Albert’s great-nephew Colin McKenzie and members of the Albert McKenzie Memorial Fund attended the event before heading to Belgium to join an international commemoration of the raid.

Paul Keefe, James Ball, Sir Simon Hughes and Ian Yates represented the Fund at the commemoration in Belgium, joined by three members of the Oxford and Bermondsey Club which Albert attended.

Members of the Royal Marines and the Royal Navy were present at all the commemoration events.

“It was a privilege on behalf of the Albert McKenzie community here in Bermondsey to be invited to play a full part in these commemorations and to give wider recognition to one of Bermondsey’s greatest ever heroes.”

CENTENARY TRIBUTES have been held in memory of WWI hero Albert McKenzie in both Bermondsey and Belgium.

Nineteen-yearold Albert was part of a raid planning to storm Zeebrugge harbour in April 1918. He and his comrades were bombarded with shells and bullets, with many British troops being killed or withdrawing. When his rifle was shot out of his hands, he had to use physical combat. In a letter to his brother, he recalls how he was left with no alternative to “pushing, kicking and kneeing every German who got in the way”, before finally making it to safety. The hero was subsequently given the Victoria Cross, but died of influenza while recovering in hospital in October that year.

A fund was launched in 2012 by local man Paul Keefe, who was shocked that the sailor hadn’t been recognised by any memorial. He was helped by then MP Simon Hughes, Admiral Lord West and Albert’s great-nephew Colin. They led a grassroots campaign that raised £142,000 for the statue to be realised.

It was created by blacksmith Kevin, and was unveiled in 2015.

‘We can’t move forward’ - three years on and Ola’s murder remains unsolved

THREE YEARS after Ola Raji from Peckham was murdered his heartbroken family are still looking for answers.

The twenty-year-old was shot and stabbed on April 21, 2015, after being confronted by two men while cycling onto East Surrey Grove Estate, off Commercial Way, but his killers are still at large.

Now, on the three year anniversary of his death, Ola’s family are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Ola’s sister, Ruki Ware, said: "The last three years have been a blur, getting through each day, going through the motions. It's very hard for everyone in different ways.

“It's a piece of your life that's gone and we're stuck in time but forced to go forwards at the same time. We're all trying as best we can.

"It gets very difficult this time of year being forced to remember what happened that night.

“We can't move forward until we know exactly what happened and the right people are held to account.

"If anyone has information I would like to beg, really, for them to come forward and help the police and us as a family.

"Anyone who does know anything could really make a big difference to us to grieve and for justice for our brother. No one deserves to have what happened happen. Help to bring the nightmare to an end.

“Nothing can change what happened but getting some closure and answers would mean a big difference to all of us."

On the night of April 21, 2015, Ola had been watching a football match

with a friend before heading out on his bike. At around 10.30pm he had a confrontation with two men and was shot, before falling to the ground and being stabbed.

Detectives believe the two men fled the scene on foot via a cut-through from Cator Street, into Sumner Road, before turning into Rosemary Road in the direction of the Surrey Canal Path.

Police were called by someone reporting shots fired, and officers

found Ola critically injured on the ground between two parked cars.

He was given first aid but died from the single gunshot to his chest shortly after arriving at hospital.

During the course of the investigation three people have been arrested and released.

Ms Ware described her brother as “a pretty normal 20-year-old guy” who liked football and spending time with his nephew.

The screening starts at 8pm and will be followed by a Q&A with documentary director Cathy Hassan.

The Old Vic will be showing punters behind the scenes of its 200-year history with tours of its stages that have hosted the likes of Laurence Olivier and Judi Dench. The theatre has been a tavern, a college, a coffee house, a lecture hall and was almost turned into a bingo hall. Tickets cost £20 plus a £1.50 transaction fee, and include a slice of cake and a glass of champagne.

The tour starts at 10.30am.

The South London Gallery will also be hosting a free exhibition exploring the history of the Pioneer Health Centre, an on-the-doorstep health service in Peckham founded in 1926, twenty-two years before the NHS was launched. The exhibition will run from

11am to 6pm.

Visitors can learn about Albert Gunter, the bus driver who jumped a number 78 double decker bus across Tower Bridge back in 1952, and can also make a model bus at the Tower Bridge exhibit.

General admission tariffs apply: £9.80 for adults, £4.20 for children and £15.30 for family tickets. Tickets are available online. The exhibition will run from 10am to 4pm.

London History Day celebrated in borough

RESIDENTS WILL see exhibitions and events popping up around the borough in celebration of London History Day ons Thursday, May 31.

The theme of this year’s event is courage, in honour of the onehundredth anniversary of the first women gaining the right to vote. The date marks the anniversary of the day that Big Ben started keeping time back in 1859.

As part of its film festival, Herne Hill will hold a free screening of Beyond the Photo, a documentary telling the stories of black Britain in the 1970s at The Prince Regent pub. The documentary features interviews with family members of community leader Olive Morris. It also includes one of the final

Hoy spoke to children from St Francis Primary School to show them the benefits of cycling.

He said: “I started out racing BMX at just seven-years-old and never looked

back. I feel so lucky to be able to be pass on my skills and hope that British Cycling’s UK HSBC Go-Ride programme can help inspire young people across the country to take to the saddle.” Hoy holds a total of six gold

medals and one silver medal to his name. After winning three golds at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, he became the first British athlete to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Games since Henry Taylor in 1908.

Southwark runners put in Marathon effort

RUNNERS FROM around the borough completed the London Marathon after months of gruelling training paid off, last weekend.

Samantha Cook completed the marathon in five hours and five minutes, raising £3,242 for the Stroke Association.

She said: “I ran in memory of my twin sister, Susan, and thinking about her whilst running really helped me to dig deep in the record temperatures. I will never forget it and I can’t thank #TeamStroke enough for the privilege of running for a charity that is so close to my heart.”

Bermondsey-based Faye Hetherington ran for Headway, the brain injury charity, which has supported her since a lifechanging brain injury four-years ago.

Although she was more used to training in snow, she said: “I'd do it again tomorrow to help change people’s lives as much as mine has been.”

Former Olympic rower Kieran West crossed the race with a time of five hours and 44 minutes, an amazing achievement given he had come down with a gastric bug the week before and “felt drained” just a few miles in. He raised £3,500 for diabetes charity JDRF. Galleywall Primary School assistant head Sarah Parbhu completed her first marathon in 5.52 hours, raising more than £2,300 for the Royal Hospital for Neurodisability. She commented: “I was proud of my home city and all the residents and spectators with their non-

‘Residents with cars being fined because of lack of parking spaces’ BERMONDSEY

Locals in block on Four Squares Estate call for grass to be used

A GROUP of Bermondsey residents is launching a petition demanding that Southwark Council provides more parking spaces on their estate.

Some of the residents have received fines as they can’t find proper spaces to park in when they come home at night.

The petition, launched by Kathleen Jones, 71, of Lockwood Square, has reached 100 signatures. There are currently 24 spaces available, including two spaces for individuals with disabilities. Residents say that this is not enough for an estate

comprised of 188 flats.

“This has been a problem for years; the amount of parking spaces has stayed the same but more people have got cars,” Ms Jones told the News.

The group would like the grass verge on the corner of the estate to be converted into additional spaces.

They say that lack of space is forcing people to park on double yellow lines.

“There are nurses, carers and teachers here and they’re getting fined because they’re coming home from work and they haven’t got a parking space. These are big fines for people, not everyone can afford to pay £65,” she said.

“I got a ticket two weeks ago. I parked on the double yellow because there was no space. I’ve challenged it but they have said that I must pay it,” thirty-year old nurse Yobany Valencia told the News.

A Southwark Council spokesperson said: “We are happy to listen to our residents and will respond to the people of Lockwood Square, when we have seen their petition.”

ITH JUST a week to go until polling day, it seems the pressure is on for the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives in Southwark.

Experts are predicting a Labour surge across both Southwark and London – and say it is a possibility they could take all 63 seats in the borough.

Labour are setting their sights on excising the Lib Dem traditional stronghold in the north of the borough, even calling in Labour heavyweight Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, to launch their manifesto in the Blue market square in Bermondsey.

And with just a tiny shift needed in Dulwich Village ward to swing the vote in favour of Labour, the Tories could see blue finally wiped off the map entirely in Southwark.

The 2014 local election saw the Lib Dems’ seats halved in Southwark with the loss of twelve councillors and the Conservatives lose one of their three seats after a Labour landslide.

Labour took 48 seats, which was their best result locally in 30 years, and experts expect to see them increase this in 2018.

The Lib Dems lost seats in the north of the borough which they had held since the ‘80s – but the News understands they are hoping to hold on to the seats they already have in this election, while making gains in new ward London Bridge and West Bermondsey.

They also have their eye on new electoral ward Goose Green in East Dulwich, and Dulwich Village could be one to watch where they believe they have two strong candidates standing.

Sources say Labour isn’t expecting to lose any seats in Southwark – but they aren’t taking anything for granted. The party is targeting places like London Bridge and West Bermondsey and St George’s – both new wards which have been changed slightly by the ward boundary review this year.

It expects to take Dulwich Wood and Dulwich Hill and is aiming for Goose Green as its big southern target.

They could face difficulties in some places since the map was redrawn such as South Bermondsey, where they have lost a relatively pro-Labour estate and simultaneously picked up an historically pro-Lib Dem area – but they expect an area like St George’s might be easier.

Tony Travers, director of LSE London, a research centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science, suggests Labour are more of a threat to the Lib Dems in this election than vice versa.

“The Liberal Democrat wards look more at threat from Labour than any Labour wards look to be at threat from the Liberal Democrats,” he said.

“If you go back to 2014, the margins of the Liberal Democrats were pretty narrow; in Surrey Docks there was an almost fourway split of the votes, and in Grange and Cathedrals they were all close enough to suggest the Liberal Democrats are at risk of a Labour surge and there’s some evidence of a Labour surge across London.”

And it seems the Conservatives – who are running a full slate of candidates across every ward but say they aren’t taking their

two seats in Dulwich Village for granted – are right not to count their chickens just yet, as Professor Travers says he would be surprised if they held on to their seats when only a “tiny” shift would swing towards Labour.

He said it was “hard not to see Labour gaining seats” and that, although he couldn’t predict it, there was a “chance” Southwark could end up with Labour taking all 63 seats.

“It’s a possibility – you couldn’t rule it out and there are others like that already in London,” he said.

“I’m not predicting that, but if the Labour party does really well at this election there will be very little opposition left in Southwark and that’s not necessarily always a good thing even for Labour, because most politics works best with opposition.”

Ward boundary changes mean there will be 23 wards in this election rather than 21 – but the number of councillors will remain the same at 63.

Seventeen wards will have three councillors, while the remaining six wards will be represented by two councillors.

Some wards will keep their usual name – but others will have a new name, such as Old Kent Road and St Giles.

This is because the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) – an independent body – has reviewed Southwark’s boundaries as there have been changes in population, meaning that some areas have too many councillors and others too few.

WITH EIGHT years under his belt as leader of the ruling party in Southwark, Peter John is confident voters will see Labour has an “exceptional” track record of delivering on its promises in the borough – but accepts they have been “slower” when it comes to council homes and broadband.

The local party leader is hoping to take control of the council for another four years – and he believes his track record since 2010 of delivering free healthy school meals and free swim and gym, and his commitment to building affordable housing will stand him in good stead.

But he isn’t afraid to admit that the Labour administration has been slow in reaching its own ambitious target of building 1,500 council homes by 2018 – and that poor broadband speeds are still plaguing residents in some parts of the borough, particularly in Rotherhithe.

“We’ve been slower on delivering council homes than we had hoped but we are up to 535 now and we’ll get to where we need to be, but maybe a year later than we had hoped,” he told the News.

“Our target remains the most ambitious of any council in the country – not just London – so our commitment to and belief in council housing remains absolute and we will carry on delivering.

“Obviously we would not have said we could build 1,500 by 2018 if we didn’t think we would get there, but it’s been a slower and harder process than we had imagined back in 2014.

“Broadband in Rotherhithe is another one where we made slower progress, but we are making real progress there.”

When pushed on Liberal Democrat criticisms that Southwark Labour could find £2,000 to spend annually on fresh flowers – and Conservative claims that it had calculated where savings could be made to buy eight police officers through the Met Patrol Plus Scheme – Mr John said the council had to “balance its priorities”.

“We could get rid of flowers and have £2,000 but it’s not a game changer,” he said.

“We had 40 per cent cut from our budget by central government in 2010.

“We are just not in a position where we can save and bail out the police as well.

“I have regular conversations with the borough commander Simon Messinger and there are no suggestions from him that this [the scheme] would be a complete game changer at all – I think it would be a token gesture really.”

“We’ve continued to have a wardens presence in the borough since 2010, which a lot of boroughs don’t have, and at one stage we did invest into some matched funding in night-time police in the borough,” he added.

“I think our budgets are really challenged at the moment and I think what’s come out loud and clear in the last few months is that the government really needs to step up – that’s who we look to to provide our police.”

The politician is not particularly concerned about losing EU nationals’ votes to the Liberal Democrats, who are the only clear anti-Brexit party nationally, as he doesn’t believe constituents in Southwark see them as having any influence on the debate.

“The EU nationals on the doorstep are not saying that to me,” he said.

“Sometimes people might get frustrated that we haven’t gone as far as they would like in calling for a second referendum and things, but they do think we have an influence on the debate.”

And he does not believe voters locally will penalise Labour over the anti-Semitism row nationally.

“We are absolutely determined as a party nationally to stamp it [antiSemitism] out and I don’t think it’s going to be a game changer in terms of how people will vote because I think they will vote locally on the basis of our record and our manifesto,” he said.

“If we found examples of that locally we would do everything to stamp it out. I think people see we are on the side of people who are hardworking and vulnerable locally and need the greatest help up – and I do think our politics chimes with [Labour party

LIBERAL DEMOCRAT leader Anood Al-Samerai is appealing for voters to reject “tired and complacent” Labour, as she says council decisions make a bigger impact on people’s lives than central government.

When London mayor Sadiq Khan launched Labour’s manifesto down the Blue (Southwark Park Road) in Bermondsey earlier this month, commentators interpreted the move as a signal Labour was taking its fight to the Liberal Democrat’s traditional Southwark heartland.

But Al-Samerai isn’t rising to the bait, telling the News: “One of the great things about Southwark is that it is politically competitive. That is democracy. Bring it on!

She continues: “Labour has real, active, political competition, and the council does not get away with anything, like their decisions about budgets,” describing her councillors as “local champions” and arguing, “It is not about celebrity status, it is about getting the job done.”

Despite a poor performance in the general election, Al-Samerai says Lib Dem party membership was on the rise “across the whole borough from Crystal Palace to Surrey Docks,” but she isn’t taking what she described as a “surge of

support” for granted, saying “we have to work to be re-elected.”

The result of this work is a detailed manifesto which finds an extra two million pounds for police from the council’s budget (police are usually funded by central government), a new house-building scheme with rent set at one third of income, and reversing Labour’s 50 per cent cuts in youth services.

A key focus on the environment and long-term sustainability would see solar panels put on council homes with income generated given back to residents, and new electric car charging points placed across the borough.

The party also wants to form a dedicated team tasked with bringing Southwark’s 6,000 empty homes back into use, and to create a new knife and moped crime policing unit to deal with a rise in violent crime.

Their budget includes axeing fresh flowers in council offices, ditching Southwark Life, the council’s magazine for residents to save around £100,000 a year, and scrapping controversial “golden goodbyes” for cabinet members.

But is it enough to stop a predicted Labour landslide?

“The biggest challenge,” she explained, “is not necessarily persuading people to vote for us, but persuading people that councils can make a difference,” highlighting that the council’s roughly £1.5 billion

budget “can affect people’s lives so much more than the national government.”

She also believes the party is at an advantage this year as there are no European Elections held on the same day, unlike in 2014.

She does not believe losing Simon Hughes as local MP will impact on their supporter base, saying: “Simon is still very much part of the Lib Dem family.

“He is not going anywhere, and he is working with us.

“I do think the wards where we do have Lib Dem councillors you would be amazed by the support they have.

“We ran the council before and we can do it again.

“Labour have had eight years in power and are tired and complacent.

“They introduced their pay-off scheme for councillors standing down a month before a 50 per cent cut in youth services.

“This year it is even worse as the cabinet members have resigned voluntarily and are being paid for it.

“There is so much potential in Southwark but right now Southwark does not work for everyone and there are real challenges in the borough.

“If we can get things like crime and housing right, we create something that works for everybody.

“I think we can come together and do it on May 3.”

THE CONSERVATIVES are running a full slate of 63 candidates across all wards in the borough in this election and – although they aren’t taking anything for granted – hope to hold on to their two existing seats in Dulwich Village.

Local party leader Michael Mitchell said he and Jane Lyons, both of whom are standing in Dulwich Village, were “getting a good reception on the door step”.

“Jane and I are picking up votes from people who have not voted Conservative in the past and are switching to us because of the work we do in the ward,” he said.

“We are campaigning in as many wards as we can, right across the borough.

“We do not take victory for granted and are fighting for every vote.”

Their key pledges include cutting out waste, cutting costs, and making sure every child in Southwark has a good school place.

If they take control of the council on May 3, they propose to protect Southwark’s neighbourhoods by buying an additional eight police officers through the Mayor of London’s Met Patrol Plus scheme and by supporting and promoting neighbourhood watch schemes.

GREEN’S PLEDGES

GREEN CANDIDATE for Camberwell’s St Giles ward, Eleanor Margolies, says her key action areas are housing and health.

Ms Margolies, who has lived in Camberwell for more than fifteen years, is one of 46 Green candidates standing in the borough election.

She told the News: “I have a proven record of getting things done, from raising £58,000 to create a community garden on the East Dulwich Estate where I live, to planting ivy screens to shield Goose Green Primary School’s playground from pollution.

“We oppose the current Labour-led

administration’s policy of selling off public land for private profit.

“Labour Party councillors have pushed through the demolition of hundreds of council homes on the Heygate and Aylesbury estates, selling the land to private developers.

“When challenged, they say there is no alternative. This is simply not true.”

She is also lobbying for reduced motor traffic, as pollution levels in some parts of Peckham and Camberwell are twice the legal limit and to help reduce the impact of climate change, as well as supporting the Green’s national policy of a “final say” referendum on Brexit.

FOUR STAND FOR UKIP UKIP HAVE four candidates standing across two wards in the north of the borough.

Mike King, a semi-retired former member of the Greater London Authority, who is a supporter of the Commonwealth and believes Britain’s future lies outside the EU, will stand in South Bermondsey.

Joining him will be black cab driver and nature lover John (Toby) Prescott, who helps run a martial arts club locally and coaches a junior football team, and supports environmental projects and charities including RSBP, Woodland Trust, Save the Children and The Royal British Legion Former Trades Union representative, employment policy

local communities and councillors by reversing the Labour administration’s decision to cut community councils in Southwark from eight to five, and pledge to increase the amount of council spending devolved to community councils in the borough.

Southwark Conservatives were in power in a coalition with the Liberal Democrats from 2006-2010 but saw their seats fall to just three in 2010, and again to just two in 2014 after losing their seat in College ward.

At the time, Mr. Mitchell said he had not expected the groundswell in popularity of Labour across London and that “lessons would need to be learned”.

UKIP’s main policies for Southwark focus on cutting local authority costs, economy and enterprise, crime, education, transport and roads, housing, and “power to the people”.

THE CHRISTIAN People’s Alliance is standing one candidate, in Champion Hill ward this year.

The Women’s Equality Party is standing two candidates, Claire Empson for Goose Green, and Eileen Scholes, in Borough and Bankside.

Ms Empson, told the News: “I joined the Women’s Equality Party as a founding member because I didn’t feel represented by my local and national government.

“Having lived and worked in East Dulwich for over fifteen years, I am both a local business owner and a mother at the heart of this community.

“Women make up more than half of this area but we are not represented equally or fairly by Southwark council.

“We see politics as a collaboration, not a battleground, and want other parties to steal our ideas and manifesto.

“We have been getting a really positive response on the doorsteps, people really seem to appreciate having an alternative to vote for that's almost like an independent, very green, and local, as it’s just the usual parties running in Goose Green apart from us.

“I have autonomy outside of our WEP manifesto meaning you can count on me personally to take a positive interest in local women’s equality, childcare, violence against women and girls, environmental issues, LGBTGI+ issues, housing and the needs of small business owners.”

Ray Towey, who also stood for Parliament in Camberwell and Peckham during the general election last year, has worked as a doctor at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in the past and as a volunteer doctor in Tanzania and Uganda more recently.

He says his national and international experience has given him a profound respect for our national health service and all who work in the health and social care sectors.

“I think the NHS and social care needs to be integrated and the funding shortfall urgently required can be obtained if we cancel the renewal of Trident which is an immoral and illegal weapon of mass destruction,” he said.

“We will then be able to care for our sick and elderly without giving them anxiety.

“On a local issue, rough sleepers in London need immediate support and their presence is a scandal to the conscience of Londoners.”

“As a Christian, I respect life from its beginning to its natural end,” he added.

KEVIN PARKIN is standing as the Socialist Party of Great Britain’s only Southwark candidate, in Borough and Bankside ward.

Mr Parkin is described by his party as “Boroughnian”, having been born and brought up in the area.

The candidate stood for the party in Southwark in the 2016 Greater London Assembly elections, and for parliament in Oxford East in the 2015 General Election.

The former chair of Dickens Tenants’ and Residents’ Association, who has lived in the ward for 20 years, is a recently retired, disabled public sector worker who is a member of the Unison and PCS trade unions.

He has represented residents since the beginning of work on the Thames Tideway ‘super sewer’.

The wider campaign has so far secured temporary rehousing and additional

glazing and dust filters for some households, and a round of money compensation last summer for a large number of residents, some of whom received thousands of pounds.

Mr Kandinsky has also campaigned for an improved and integrated rubbish collection and cleaning service in the ward, and challenged the council on tenants’ rights.

Mr Kandinsky says he wears a Jeremy Corbyn badge “with pride” and “would support any councillors who stood up and fought with local people against Tory austerity”.

LABOUR AND CO-OPERATIVE WHAT DOES “Labour and Cooperative” mean?

The Labour and Cooperative party is used to describe candidates who stand on behalf of Labour, and the Cooperative Party.

The two parties have had an alliance since 1927, when they agreed not to stand against each other, and Cooperative MPs and councillors are generally included in Labour totals.

Southwark are also standing on behalf of the Co-operatives. The party campaigns for public ownership of services and utilities, co-operative housing, credit unions instead of payday loans, and customer-owned shops.

Claire Sheppard is standing as an independent candidate in Peckham Rye, where she both lives and runs her own market research business.

In her time spent living there, she has helped run community groups such as Nunhead Community Choir and has set up and acted as president of Nunhead Women’s Institute.

Claire has also fundraised for causes such as the new cancer centre at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Claire Sheppard Hospital – which she says saved her life after she was diagnosed with cancer following the birth of her son in 2015.

She says she has always been interested in politics but has never had any long-term affiliation with any party, although she sees herself as very much on the left side of the political spectrum. The Peckham Rye candidate promises to listen to the community on local issues and vote to the benefit of the community. Her main focuses include the council to look more closely at their consultations, the housing crisis in the borough, leaseholders’ bills for major works, and making sure residents feel they have a “real voice on the council”.

Lucy Carrington is also standing as an independent in North Walworth but the News was unable to make contact before going to press.

Author pens novel on ancestors who settled on uninhabited Pacific island

A CAMBERWELL author has penned a novel based on the true story of her husband’s ancestors who settled an uninhabited Pacific island in the 1800s.

In 1878, Englishman Tom Bell set up life on Sunday Island, six hundred miles north of New Zealand, where he brought up ten children with his wife before they were evacuated during the First World War. Lydia Syson, who is related to Bell by marriage, has written a fictional account of the story in her latest novel Mr Peacock’s Possessions after several years of research which even saw her visit the island.

The book tells the story of Lizzie Peacock and her siblings who have survived on next to nothing for two years when a ship with a group of islanders arrives looking for work.

Mr Peacock’s eldest son Albert seizes his chance to get away from his father and the island when the ship arrives.

As the family of settlers and newlyarrived islanders come together to search for Albert, the island’s secrets are slowly revealed.

Syson was brought up in London and Botswana and now lives in Camberwell with her partner and their four children.

Mr Peacock’s Possessions is her adult fiction debut after previously publishing three historical novels for young adults.

The book, published by Zaffre, will be available in hardback for £12.99 from May 17.

A DRAFT LIST of unprotected historic buildings has been pubished on the council’s website after heritage societies called on Southwark to draw one up.

The draft contains buildings mentioned in Southwark’s existing planning documents, and the draft Old Kent Road Area Action Plan, which are of architectural or historical interest.

The page, updated on March 29, includes Peckham’s former Jones and Higgins Department Store and the Crown and Anchor public house on the New Kent Road.

THE HALF Moon in Herne Hill has been named best pub in Greater London by the National Pub and Bar Awards, a year after re-opening.

82-96 Walworth Road - a historic terrace with no formal protection

The historic pub was closed from 2013 to 2017 after widespread flooding from burst Thames Water pipe damaged the Grade II listed building.

The former live music venue was taken over by pub chain Fullers and extensively refurbed after a campaign to save the building from redevelopment.

Manager Matt Dudson described the accolade as a “Great reward for all the

hard work myself and my fantastic team have put in since we re-opened this historic venue in March last year.”

Tristan O’Hana, from the National Pub and Bar Awards, said: “Everything about the Half Moon epitomises what modern on-trade hospitality should feature.

“A great drinks range, attentive and friendly service, a solid food offer, and the added bonus of spectacular accommodation.”

He added: “Fuller’s did a wonderful job with the refurbishment of this pub, and the whole team deserve this accolade.

“Well done to everyone involved.”

Spring is here!

T HARDLY seems possible that temperatures have risen so quickly to summer levels within weeks of the seriously cold March weather.

Although misty, damp and dull conditions have been the predominant feature through most of April - with low night time temperatures.

The last few days have seen leaves burst into growth and a succession of spring flowers are making up for lost time. Magnolia soulangeana, Ribes, Tulips, Violas, Wallflowers and the Forget-me-knots are in flower. Also about to come into bloom is Ceanothus (Californian lilac) and Hawthorn, the latter is smothered in white flowers – which have a surprisingly unpleasant odour; the reason being the pollinators are flies and so the flowers give a sweet slightly ‘off ‘ scent; they are interesting - if you don’t get too close!

And with a change in the weather it is time to prepare new window box and container displays. Dianthus carophyllus (Clove pink) a scented and multi-colour early summer plant is a lovely choice – and already available in the garden centres. Dianthus are low maintenance and will flower over many months. The snakes head Fritillary is eye catching – with purple chequered hanging bell shaped flowers on long fragile green stems. It’s usually found naturalised in meadows and grassy areas; but due to the disappearance of this favoured habitat - the Fritillary is an endangered wild flower. It would have once grown in profusion in the wetlands along the Thames. But they can be bought as cultivated specimens and are attractive growing amongst ferns, Primroses and Violas. Planted out in the garden they will - in time - naturalise and come up every year.

Chaenomeles, Forsythia, the spring flowering Clematis and Rosemary can be pruned if needed – but only once flowering has finished. Lavender may need tidying but do not cut back into older woody stems or take off flowering shoots. Allow the foliage on early spring flowering bulbs to die back naturally; this helps the plant to take on energy for next year.

It is worth visiting the flower market or garden centre for inspiration to see the range of seasonal plants available for spring and early summer planting.

Replace tools if needed and buy compost in readiness to top up the window boxes and containers - and to use for hanging baskets later in the season.

Southwark Council has no plans to fell ten acres of woodland

I FEEL it is important that I respond to the inaccuracies concerning the work in Southwark Cemeteries that were published on these letters pages last week.

I can confirm that we are not, and do not, have plans to fell ten acres of woodland. Work currently underway in our cemeteries is creating much needed burial space, in line with the council’s Cemetery Strategy, which was adopted following a full consultation, in 2012.

In addition, our plans aim to enhance the biodiversity and ecological value in both Camberwell Old and New cemeteries; we have been working closely with the London Wildlife Trust to assure this.

The council reviewed Tree Preservation Orders at the cemeteries in 2015, and made some changes to enable necessary tree management.

Any trees lost in our cemeteries, and we are being very careful to keep this to a minimum, will be replaced with a greater number of new trees. Important trees are protected with Tree Preservation Orders and we are working to ensure that all our trees are healthy and can be sustained.

Southwark Council is committed to creating burial spaces for residents who want to be buried locally, where their family may be buried, and in a place where relatives and local people can come and experience nature and tranquillity.

like me, live with the daily pain and fatigue of arthritis in the UK.

This can make simple activities like getting dressed, household chores or even picking up cutlery difficult.

I myself have severe osteoarthritis in my hands, my back and my knees. I’m in excruciating pain on a daily basis and I feel that I’m becoming increasingly dependent on others. This is extremely frustrating, because just last year I was working in a job I loved as a special needs teacher.

As well as having a lot of surgery over the years, I’ve lost so much in my day to day life that most people take for granted. I can’t drive, I can’t cook, people have to cut up my meals for me and I can’t wear anything with zips or laces. They may seem like little things that I can’t do, but this has a huge impact on my life.

I am sure many people with arthritis like me, will know the all too familiar experience of googling symptoms, asking questions on social media and trawling through forums and patient websites for answers about your own or a loved one’s condition, and how to manage the symptoms. Naturally, I found this daunting, as it’s hard to decipher what information you can trust, what information is based on scientific evidence and what is based on old wives’ tales. Indeed, if you google the phrase ‘arthritis information’ around 2,480,000 results appear.

That’s why I wanted to tell you about the charity Arthritis Research UK. The leading experts in the field, its latest campaign ‘Ask us your question,’ calls for those living with arthritis to pose their questions for help finding trusted answers. I’ve used their helpline several times since it launched last year to ask about pain management and medication. I would recommend it as you can trust the charity’s information is based on years of knowledge and research, as well as the experiences of thousands of people like me.

Age friendly manifesto

AGE UKS across London are proud to present “Make London’s Boroughs Age Friendly!” a brand new manifesto for the upcoming London borough council elections on May 3rd.

As London continues to grow, the number of older Londoners is increasing too. A socially and economically diverse group, older Londoners contribute massively to every borough of the capital, as workers, volunteers, carers, and much more besides. However, a large number of older Londoners are living below the poverty line and the pressure on local government finances has driven adult social care to breaking point. Action must be taken to ensure London can remain a great place to grow older.

Accordingly, Age UKs in London are calling on candidates in the London borough council elections to commit to making changes in five key areas. Our asks include: Quality, Responsive Local Care Services: We call on candidates to: - Give top political priority to ensuring that older people with identified care needs are not left without support - Bring the borough into line with the Age Friendly Cities approach and cooperate with other local authorities and the Mayor of London to develop this concept. Work to make the borough dementia friendly if this is not already in progress.

- Make information and advice accessible to all older Londoners, including disabled people with physical and sensory impairments and those who are not online - Ensure provision of more genuinely affordable, accessible housing to rent (long term) and buy for people of all ages; meet at least the London Plan targets for provision of good quality, affordable specialist housing for older people.

Championing the power of local people

EVERY DAY, tens of thousands of people go to work at one of the 7,000 community businesses in England.

Hundreds of thousands of us shop, visit or benefit from them directly, yet they are still relatively unknown.

Amongst them are community shops, with an impressive survival rate of over 95% compared to around 50% for small businesses generally. In some communities, they can be the single biggest employer in the area.

The day the 78 bus jumped Tower Bridge

Sixty six years since double decker jumped rising bascules

THIS YEAR marks the sixtysixth year since a number 78 bus travelling from Peckham to Shoreditch flew over four feet in the air across Tower Bridge.

On 30 December 1952, bus driver Albert Gunter was going about his everyday route when he noticed the road in front of him starting to drop away. He realised that the bridge was opening and that his bus was on the side of the rising bascule.

Tower Bridge is on the route of what used to be one of the busiest commercial ports in the world, the Port of London, which connects the capital to the North Sea. After the

bridge was first built in 1894, it would open around 9000 times a year. Boats carrying cargo would pass through and a guard would be placed on either side of the bridge, blocking off the traffic with a chain.

Both bascules would rise to an 85 degree angle within 60 seconds.

The day Gunter was driving, the chain that was usually put in place to stop traffic had been forgotten.

Realising that the bridge was about to go up and not having the chance to reverse back, Albert slammed his foot down on the accelerator. The guard on other side had seen what was going on and kept the north bascule down. Gunter managed to jump the double decker over the already opening bridge, successfully reaching the other side over the four foot gap.

“All the wheels fell off the bus when it hit the north side of the bridge. The conductor lost tickets and the collected fares fell into the river, which I imagine he would have been quite upset about, but no one was seriously injured,” Richard Smith, welcome host and tour guide at Tower Bridge, told the News.

Not much is known about Gunter, except that he received a £10 reward from the City of London Corporation for his bravery.

“Passengers could claim compensation for upset if they could produce a ticket documenting the journey. One man who broke his collar bone received £50 in compensation,” said Smith.

Although the bridge is still

governed by the Corporation of London Act from 1885, nowadays the City of London needs to receive 24 hours’ notice in order for boat passage to be authorised. It opens roughly 100 times a year.

When due notice is given and granted, boats have ultimate priority over cars come rain or shine. In May 1997, after a dinner with Tony Blair at nearby restaurant, Bill Clinton got caught on the south side of the bridge when his limousine was separated from the then-prime minister’s motorcade. Scotland Yard demanded that the bridge be lowered so that his vehicle could catch up with the rest of party.

“They advised him that it doesn’t matter who is in the vehicle, the bridge isn’t going up,” said Smith.

According to the letter of the law, river traffic takes priority over road traffic, and Clinton had to wait for the boat to pass.

Lionesses stay second despite first defeat of season

LEE BURCH admitted Millwall Lionesses didn’t deserve anything from the game after seeing their long unbeaten run ended by Durham last weekend.

The home side went in front when Zoe Ness struck in the sixth minute on her 50th Durham appearance but secondplaced Millwall equalised thirteen minutes later through Ellie Mason.

But two minutes before half-time Durham went back in front when Emily Roberts fired home to end Millwall’s nineteen-game unbeaten league run.

The fixture was in doubt last week when it was revealed the Bermondsey club was in financial difficulty. A Crowdfunding page was set up and sufficient funds were raised to ensure they could make the trip and stay overnight.

“It’s the first defeat of a good season so far, it was going to happen at some point,” manager Burch said. “It was against a good side in Durham but it’s hard to take, you obviously don’t want to lose football matches. We look at the performance over 90 minutes and not enough of us were at it. We can’t come away saying we deserved something. We gave them good opportunities to score and they took them.

“We hadn’t won a game when I came here two years ago. We went there having not lost a game. The girls need to take it on the chin and roll on to the next games.”

The first of the two closelyfought games saw Ethan Maxwell give Docklands a 1-0 win.

Docklands played some fantastic passing football in the second game but Fisher battled well and defended resiliently.

Maxwell netted again for Docklands before William Ellul levelled before half-time. But a second-half long-range shot from Lenny Davis gave Docklands a double derby win.

Docklands manager and Fisher coach Tommy Mccloud said: “I was pleased with both teams’ performances and the derby lived up to expectations.”

Mason Mulholland curled in a Beckham-esque free-kick to give his side a half-time lead before AJ Sinclair made it 2-0 after the break with a fine finish. Danson got a goal back but the Fish held firm for the 2-1 win.

Danson went one up in the second game before Freddie Cummings ran onto the ball just inside his own half and fired into the top corner.

After the break, Sinclair found space and without breaking stride he also found the top corner for his 50th goal of the season.

He then made it 51 from a freekick as his side clinched a 3-1 win.

On Friday, Fulham brought Kalas off the bench and in the 89th minute he strode forward to find Aleksandar Mitrovic, who stroked the ball into the top corner to add a stylish flourish to Fulham’s win.

The making and finishing of that goal signified not just what Millwall were up against in this game but in this league, when teams can recruit the likes of Kalas and Mitrovic, the latter who cost Newcastle £13million in 2015. It was a reminder amidst the disappointment of the defeat how much they have punched above their weight to be where they are.

At the final whistle, the home fans rose to their feet to applaud their players, and that alone will have given them solace after they saw their seventeen-game unbeaten run come to an end.

Not that there should be any doubt that they aren’t capable of recovering from setbacks at the most important times of the season. On the same weekend last year, Neil Harris’ side lost 3-0 at home to Oxford, the second successive game they had failed to score after a 1-0 defeat in Fleetwood, before they scored four to win at Bristol Rovers and the rest was history.

Seven of the team that started last year against Oxford started against Fulham and they should have led after the first half against a side that got to the play-offs for the Premier League last season.

Part of the reason the Lions didn’t go in front was the performance of referee Andre Marriner, who Harris revealed afterwards had shown amazing arrogance at half-time.

Marriner appeared to be penalising Millwall when there was any physical contact, but then letting Fulham away with fouls. At one point in the first half, right under his nose, the referee let Tom Cairney away with blatantly tripping George Saville.

Millwall also wanted to put pressure on Fulham’s goal-kicks, but the officials were even interfering with their attempts to do that. When Marcus Bettinelli clipped a short kick-out to Tim Ream early on, Lee Gregory nipped in to win possession after the defender mis-controlled the ball. But the linesman’s flag shot up for it to be retaken. The rule is the ball must be out of the area before any player can enter it.

Ream’s touch was certainly outside, but Gregory appeared to be right on the eighteen-yard line as the ball was exiting the area. It was marginal at best.

And then there was the goal that wasn’t.

When Ben Marshall crossed from the left there were two players under it but only one player trying to play the ball. Matt Targett was backing away as Jed Wallace climbed to nod down to Saville, who crashed a right-footed shot high into the net (above).

Saville and Wallace (right) were away celebrating, and most of the ground thought the home side had taken the lead, but Marriner had whistled for a foul just as Saville was connecting with his effort.

“I thought [Marriner] did very well for the away team first half,” Harris said afterwards. “I’ve not seen the goal back, Jed goes over the top of [the defender]. Is it a foul? As a defender I’d probably want a foul but as an attacking team you don’t want the foul. It’s probably a 50-50 call.

“I thought there was a lot of protection for Fulham from the referee in the first half. I thought he could have let a lot more go.

“But as he pointed out to me at half-time he thought he was ‘excellent’ first half.

Open quotes, he was ‘excellent’, close quotes.”

The referee couldn’t be blamed when Millwall had a superb chance to take the lead after Bettinelli tried to punch clear but the ball landed at the feet of Wallace in the box.

The winger didn’t make the contact he wanted and gave Ream a chance, but it was still excellent anticipation by the centre-back to clear off the line.

Having been so good from restarts this season, with three goals inside the first minute in three games, Millwall were then caught out 41 seconds into the second half. Jordan Archer should have done better than parry Mitrovic’s shot into a dangerous area, and Ran Sessegnon reacted faster than Mahlon Romeo to tuck the ball home.

That meant Millwall would now have to come out, leaving defensive gaps. And an uphill battle became a mountain to climb when Kevin McDonald picked his spot to beat Archer at the near post from 25 yards.

Harris made a raft of attacking changes, sending Tom Elliott, Tim Cahill and Aiden O’Brien on but they failed to make an impact, beyond another booking for Cahill and accusations the Australian international was late with his elbow for which he has now been banned.

Mitrovic appeared to take his own retribution for that as he made contact with Cahill off the ball. Mitrovic then made the right kind of contact with the ball to make it 3-0.

Millwall must summon the spirit that has got them this far twice more to try to defy the odds and clinch a top-six place.

They were undone by the big names on Friday, but won’t be intimidated by Middlesbrough or Aston Villa.

They may perhaps never get this close again.

KEVIN NUGENT admitted loan moves are the likeliest route for Millwall under-23s to gain firstteam experience after seeing his side end their league campaign this season with a 2-1 win over Burnley on Monday.

It was a strong Millwall team at The Den, Fred Onyedinma and Ryan Tunnicliffe scoring and Ben Thompson also starting after his recent injury.

But it is the younger players who will be wondering where their futures lie.

Kris Twardek started after playing eighteen minutes for Carlisle last Saturday (loan players can play in under-23 games for their parent clubs).

Christian Mbulu, who joined the club almost three years ago, hasn’t got his first-team chance yet and with Millwall securing their place in the Championship, at least, a breakthrough in the near future is unlikely.

Manchester United academy boss Nicky Butt said recently that 20-, 21 year-olds who are still playing under-23 football are unlikely to make it through to the first team if they haven’t already been close to it.

Nugent pointed out that given how successful the recruitment for the firstteam squad has been, it has meant younger players haven’t got their chance this season.

And he agrees with Butt that it is an uncertain time for those players in their early 20s.

“I think there is a bit of truth in what he says,” Nugent admitted. “The 23s gives you the scope to play some over-age players and lads that have come back from injury.

“You need to give players time, but sometimes at 21, 22 if you haven’t been in and around your first team it might be difficult.

“The first team are doing so well, there is a gap there to under-23s football. I think moving forward players need to get themselves out on loan at decent levels. It has to be the right loan.

“Sometimes they might be clocking up a couple of hundred games before they even get near a Championship side. That’s the way it might be moving forward and we have to be patient with these lads.

“The recruitment for the first team has been so good, it’s a fantastic standard.

It is tough for lads to break through. It’s all about results in the first team and they have to be trusted if they go in.”

Monday’s fixture featured effectively Millwall’s reserve team. Jason Shackell and Harry Toffolo were in defence, Aiden O’Brien in midfield while Dave Martin played in goal.

Onyedinma took his goal superbly, taking a touch inside the box before turning and curling into the far corner.

Before half-time, Tunnicliffe applied the finishing touch to an excellent passing move involving nearly every outfield player.

Nugent praised those senior players more used to playing in front of 15,000 fans compared to the handful of spectators that were at The Den this week.

“It’s been an up-and-down season in terms of results, there have been some fantastic performances, which is most important, individual and collectively.

It’s always nice to win but the individual performances have been pleasing.

“We’ve been planning for the summer already. We’ll be speaking to players, they will have individual fitness programmes. We’ve taken five scholars into our group. They will be working through the summer.

“Players will have individual plans, focusing on what they need to work on and improve on.”

Millwall are hoping to unearth the next Mahlon Romeo – who joined the club three years ago this month after being released by Gillingham – and featured two on-loan players against Burnley.

Chesmain made his senior debut as a 17-year-old when he came on as an 83rd-minute substitute for Shane Ferguson in a 1-0 league win over Bury in November 2015.

Since then, he has spent time on loan at Welling and Boreham Wood in the National League.

His deal runs out at the end of June.

Centre-back Age: 21

Mbulu was one of the first signings of the Neil Harris era, plucked from non-league football in the summer of 2015.

He has yet to play for the first team – though has been in Harris’ squad – and featured three times on loan at Braintree last season.

Nugent explained: “At this stage of the season there are players coming in and going out. There are players leaving other clubs so we want to make sure we don’t miss out. It’s all part of the recruitment process.

“It’s constantly evolving and you’re always looking for better than what you have got. That’s the nature of the beast. They will come in and train hard and see if they can improve us.”

His talent was earmarked early when Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger invited him to join first-team training before a Champions League game with Monaco.

Donovan has been a regular for the under-23s for two seasons but hasn’t got close to the first team. Out of contract in the summer.

Only turned 21 last month but another youngster at an important career juncture.

Marshall hopes to help Millwall join parent club in Premier League

BEN MARSHALL admitted his first defeat in a Millwall shirt was tough to take – but the positive atmosphere at the training ground on Monday helped him to put it behind him.

Marshall had been involved in a run of nine wins and four draws to which he contributed three goals and five assists before the jolt of last Friday’s 3-0 loss to Fulham which ended Millwall’s seventeen-game unbeaten league run.

That was his first time losing since last October, when he was on the Wolves team that were defeated 2-1 at QPR. Millwall felt hard-done-by against the Cottagers, seeing a first-half goal ruled out as referee Andre Marriner contributed a fussy performance.

But the Lions can still go level on points with Middlesbrough if they win on Teeside on Saturday, taking the playoff race into the last day of the season against Aston Villa.

Marshall admitted beating Middlesbrough is “a must” and Millwall should go there with confidence as they have the second-best away record in the

division since losing at Norwich on New Year’s Day. Winger Marshall felt his side were unfortunate not to be ahead against Fulham before the visitors struck three times in the second half.

“It was going to be difficult against Fulham. We managed to get a point at Sheffield after being 1-0 down, but against Fulham if you make mistakes they punish you. That was the story of the game, really,” Marhall said.

“The atmosphere was brilliant. I enjoy Friday night games and on Sky it’s a chance to prove yourself. I thought we were unlucky not to be one or two up after the first half.

“There were a few decisions that didn’t go our way. I don’t know what you can or can’t say but if the referee looked back at some of his decisions he might think twice about them. It’s gone now and we can’t change it.

“Because we’ve been winning and not been beaten in so many games, when you do get beaten it’s a bit of a blow. But at the end of the day we’re still in there.

We’ve just got to let it go and concentrate on Middlesbrough.

“If we beat Middlesbrough we’ve got a massive chance. We can only win our games. If we beat Middlesbrough we go on the same points as them. Regardless

of other results if we’re on the same number of points as them on the last day of the season then we’re still right in there.

“I still fancy us. If we can get it to the last game and we need to get a result it’ll be brilliant.

“If we get The Den rocking against Villa – and since I’ve been here it’s been like that – I’d back us massively.

“The unbeaten run was brilliant, as a footballer winning games is the best feeling you can get. It felt like a bigger defeat because I was so used to winning.

“It hurt for a couple of days but then you get over it when you come back into training and everyone has a smile on their face. It’s, ‘right, come on, it’s on to the next game’.

“Three points is a must.

Middlesbrough are a side doing well but we’re also a side that’s done very well.

It has the makings of a good game.”

Boro are managed by Tony Pulis, who was in charge of Stoke when Marshall was a trainee trying to break into the side.

“We know about Pulis and how his teams play,” Marshall continued. “I was with Pulis at Stoke so I know what his mindset is. I know he will be wanting to win the game as much as us.

need to win, we need to win – I’m excited about it.

“When I was at Stoke I was a young lad and he helped me out massively. He let me go on loan at an early age. Every time I came back he made me feel welcome. He knows what he wants from his players. He has his way of playing.

“I haven’t got a bad word to say about him. For me he was brilliant and he helped me progress in my career.”

That career eventually led to Millwall, where he immediately made an impact to help propel the side up the table.

Marshall said: “The lads have made me feel welcome. Obviously I bring the jokes and that to the table. Sometimes you settle in quickly, sometimes it takes a while. But I’ve found the experience brilliant.

“It helped that I got a few goals and a few assists. Regardless of what happens in the next two games I’ll look back at the second half of the season and the loan spell thinking I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I’ve really enjoyed it.”

It might still be an outside shot, but Marshall could help Millwall join his parent club Wolves in the Premier League.

Nuno Santo’s side are set to smash the

100-point barrier on their way to winning the title.

“It was brilliant for them. I think from the start of the season they were up there and always looking like they were going to challenge,” Marshall said. “It’s great for them to go up to the Premier League, not just on the pitch but off it was well.

“Those lads have to think of their families as well and they are all going to be better off. It’s nice to see that happen to your friends. It’s a new chapter and I’m very happy for them.”

Wolves’ success is likely to hasten a big investment in the squad, which could mean Marshall is surplus to requirements in the summer.

“It goes through my mind what’s going to happen, obviously I’ve got to plan for the future,” Marshall said. “I’ve not spoken to Wolves about it. I have had a chat with the gaffer here.

“If something could happen next season so be it. My mindset is to get us into the play-offs and try to get up to the Premier League. If we do that then it obviously makes things a lot easier in terms of maybe coming back permanently.

“I’ll have the summer off and for me the ball will start rolling again preseason and we see what happens.”

NEIL Harris admitted he was buoyed more than disappointed after reviewing Millwall’s defeat to Fulham last weekend – saying he is filled with “huge pride” with his side’s achievements to far this season.

Harris was pleased with his players’ first-half performance when they had Fulham on the back foot, before a “mad” ten minutes after the break when a rampant visiting side scored twice.

The Lions boss went to Derby the next day and saw the Rams lose 2-1 at home to Middlesbrough, a result that kept Millwall in sixth.

Harris said he was able to put the defeat to Slavisa Jokanovic’s side in “perspective” in the context of their seventeen-match unbeaten run.

“I was disappointed after the game but I watched it back later that night when I got in and the performance in the first half, the atmosphere in the stadium, it was Millwall at its best, it was top, top drawer,” Harris said.

“And then we had a mad ten minutes when we couldn’t contain Fulham and gave two sloppy goals away. We huffed and puffed and worked really hard but never looked like we had the belief to get back in the game.

“I made various changes to the team and the formation and nothing worked, I’ve got to be honest. They scored a third goal because of that and we all came in a little bit deflated.

“It was a great run. I woke up Saturday morning and put in perspective the result and the performance. For seventeen-and-ahalf games we have been as good as anybody in the division and then had a mad 25 minutes. It was similar to that mad 25 minutes we had before Christmas at Derby.

“We have to say, ‘that isn’t bad for Millwall’. I now look at the bigger picture, after seeing the results Saturday and the league table.

“What it goes to show is there will be a lot of twists and turns to come before the end of the season.

What hit me on Friday night was the reaction of the fans when the third goal went it. It wasn’t one of sorrow or frustration – they got louder. They supported the players and gave them a standing ovation coming off, for the first-half performance and for what they have achieved this season so far.

“We’re confident, we’ve got faith in how we play and we know what we’re capable of. We’re not going into the game nervous, we’re going in with confidence.

Millwall have to plan for Premier League scenario EXCLUSIVE

MILLWALL HAVE a list of number-one summer transfer targets – with Lions boss Neil Harris admitting it will be “a lot easier to get them” if they win promotion to the Premier League.

Like last year, Millwall’s recruitment team are planning for two outcomes this season, with the Lions still gunning for a top-six place.

Last summer, Harris signed seven players before the transfer deadline,

all of them their first choices.

Harris admitted that probably would not have been possible had they not won promotion from League One, with the likes of Jed Wallace, George Saville and Jake Cooper determined to play Championship football.

Millwall would be set for an incredible £100million windfall if they were promoted to the Premier League.

But Harris insisted their recruitment processes do not change.

“What we did last year was we had players in mind that we were going to go after, number-one targets,” Harris said. “We got them all. Would we have got them all in League One?

I’m not so sure, it would have been a lot tougher.

“We’ll have our first-choice targets for the summer that we would like to bring in. It will be a lot easier to get them if we are in the league above. It will be a lot tougher to get them if you are in the Championship.

“Then you have your plan B, plan C and that’s worked for us the last couple of years. We’re not going to change that now.

“We try to identify the best possible players we can that fit into our system of play and to try and move us forward.

“That applies whatever league we’re in.

League] would dictate it would be a completely different standard and then we can re-evaluate.

“But at the moment the recruitment department go about their business on a daily basis, go to games and have to prepare going forward.

“The knowledge we have picked up this season in the Championship has been invaluable to be able to move forward with a group of players.

“Whether that’s Premier League or Championship my job is to solely focus in the next two games and pick the right teams, the right formations to get two results.

“But I also have to have one eye on overseeing the first-team group and the under-23s.”

Marshall joined the Lions on loan from Wolves in January and made an immediate impact. He scored the winner against Burton in his fourth game.

That was one of three goals so far for Millwall and he also has five assists.

Marshall, 27, has proved popular with Lions fans with his all-action style and superb crossing and shooting ability. He scored one of Millwall’s goals of the season when he curled into the top corner from 25 yards to seal a 2-0 win at Barnsley in March.

Former Leicester and Blackburn winger Marshall is contracted to Wolves until 2020, but their promotion to the Premier League will see them invest a large chunk of the £100million they have banked as a result and push Marshall further down the pecking order.

Marshall isn’t ruling out a permanent switch to Millwall.

“I know what it’s like here,” he said. “If I were to go to another team I wouldn’t. I know what the manager wants here, I know what I’m getting.

“Of course I’d love to come back.

“But before thinking about that we’ve got to try to get into the play-offs and do as best we can.

“We’ll sit down after that and see what happens.”
