Now the News can reveal that complex issue is being discussed at schools across the borough, including Ark Globe Academy in Elephant and Castle and All SaintsAcademy in Camberwell, in light of the new legislation, to help support children who believe they were born as the wrong gender, or do not identify as either ‘male’or ‘female’.

EMPTY PRIVATE HOMES AN EVEN BIGGER ISSUE

T

HE BLIGHT of much-needed homes left empty for years was brought into sharp relief this week with the release of figures that show Southwark has the highest number in London.

Granted, this borough also has one of the largest social housing stocks in the capital, if not the country. Yet when you consider our tally of 5,944 homes classed as empty in October last year was double the number three years ago - and more than Lewisham, Lambeth and Tower Hamlets combined - you can’t help but acknowledge we have a mountain to climb.

Labour group leader Peter John suggested the figures were just a snapshot on a certain day, but nevertheless admitted they were ‘alarming’ and ‘unsatisfactory’ for his administration.

Unsurprisingly, given that it’s at the heart of their election manifesto, the Liberal Democrats have called for greater action by the local authority. 225 council homes have been empty for over two years, and nobody can really argue that this is acceptable, given the crisis London faces over affordable housing.

What they have also suggested - and this bears thinking about - is that a council tax increase should be imposed on empty homes to encourage absentee landlords to put them back on the market. Only one out of seven that are empty in the borough are council stock, so the even bigger issue here is with private landlords and what power local authorities have over them.

The Lib Dems have also called for a specific team to work on reducing the time properties are left empty. The real surprise here would be if there wasn’t one in place already.

The housing shortage is so severe that a crossparty approach would be a huge step forward.

Little chance of that, so all we can hope is that whoever is in power after the upcoming elections puts this issue at the very top of the agenda.

Celebration of old boxing club will raise money for fighters’ families

AN EVENT celebrating Walworth’s place in boxing history will raise money for the family of tragic fighter Scott Westgarth.

The reunion, held by the Essex ExBoxers’ Association, takes place on April 21 at Manor Place Baths.

On the day, medals will be awarded to everyone who fought at the historic Walworth venue, including framed certificates for fighters who entered the ring on several occasions.

Organisers hope to raise as much as possible.

Thirty-one-year-old Westgarth collapsed hours after beating his opponent at a Doncaster fight last month.

The light-heavyweight died in hospital on Sunday, February 25.

Funds raised on the day will be split equally between Mr Westgarth’s family, and towards a fund for Boxer Herol Graham’s wife.

The former British, European and Commonwealth light-middle and middleweight title-holder’s wife, Karen, was diagnosed with stage three bladder cancer three years ago.

The disease has now spread to her spine, and funds from the event will help pay for treatment not available on the NHS. Organiser Raymond Lee says Manor Bath Place held 230 shows and 1,500 fights between its first fight in 1908 and the last round in 1978.

Legendary fighters to hit its ring included Johnny Clark, the 1973 British and European bantamweight winner.

Mr Lee said he was keen to hear from any ex-boxers and their families, and would encourage them to come along.

He told the News: “The building’s

HERITAGE SOCIETY LOBBY TO SAVE BUILDINGS FROM BULLDOZERS

IN THE run up to May’s local elections, heritage campaigners are lobbying for greater protection to be given to historic buildings across Southwark.

According to the Walworth Society, historic buildings outside set conservation areas, or without a grade listing, can be demolished or redeveloped.

However, they could be given extra protection if they were added to a ‘local list’ of historic buildings mapped by the

The group says around half of local authorities across England have created their own list, cataloguing buildings of interest.

The society says it is calling on the new administration in Southwark to create a list of unprotected buildings, and create a policy for looking after them.

Jeremy Leach, chair of The Walworth Society, said it wanted the policy to be adopted no later than May 2019.

He told the News: “In Walworth alone in recent years we have lost buildings like The Crown public house in Brandon

Street and the terrace at the top end of the Walworth Road, which is almost the last vestige of pre-War Elephant and Castle.

“The famous Piccadilly Circus of the south has no protection either.

“Creating a ‘local list’ can help give some protection to the many buildings like this all across Southwark.

“It can be a great way of involving local people in learning more about the history of this fascinating borough.

“We are asking candidates from all of the parties to agree to create a local list if they are elected on May 3.

Benedict O'Looney from the Peckham

Society, and chair of Southwark’s conservation areas advisory group, said: “There is so much of real beauty and interest to Southwark’s townscape beyond its listed buildings and conservation areas. Even in our Rye Lane conservation area we are still losing significant buildings. Southwark has great historic and contemporary townscape, of national significance. We need to do much more to protect it."

A council spokesperson said: “We are considering the request from the Peckham and Walworth Societies to establish a local list.

“However, we have already designated conservation areas that provide the most effective protection to buildings and streetscapes across the borough.

“The council is currently working with the Walworth Society to consider conservation areas in parts of the Old Kent Road Opportunity Area, to ensure that important non-listed heritage assets are recognised and protected.

Southwark Council has a designated heritage at risk officer and a wellestablished record of protecting, renovating and celebrating heritage across the borough.”

COMMUNITY GROUP Peckham Vision is holding a hustings event focused on planning and regeneration this Saturday, giving residents the chance to question candidates standing for local election.

The event, held at the Old Kent

Road’s Christ Church, from 3-5pm, also includes an exhibition of borough-wide planning and regeneration issues, on display from 2pm.

Eileen Conn, Southwark Planning Network and Peckham Vision coordinator told the News: "This is a

hustings with a difference, creating a space where community perspectives on important planning policy matters can be raised with politicians seeking election.

“We hope anyone interested in or concerned about planning and regeneration will come along."

After feedback from an initial round of public consultation, Camberwell Union designs were altered to lower the tallest building’s height from eighteen to fourteen storeys, and include more art and gallery space, in the form of public ‘yards’.

A spokesperson for Peachtree said: “Our ambition is for the ‘Camberwell Union’ project to become a new creative centre in Camberwell, bringing over 200 new jobs and 500 homes to the area – with 35% affordable housing.

“We have worked for over a year on plans for the site and submitted a planning application at the start of 2018.

“We are now considering the feedback it has received and continue to talk to Southwark Council about refining the designs. We want to ensure that it fits in well with the local area and

what it needs.”

The Friends of Burgess Park group say its members are worried the park’s green space and woodland will be overshadowed, and the Wells Way Triangle Residents’ Association is concerned the development does not include a much-needed new pharmacy or GP surgery.

The planned development will also obscure views of a grade-listed historic church spire on the park’s skyline.

Susan Crisp, from Friends of Burgess Park, said: "The group is not opposed to development but we are concerned about over shadowing, loss of sunlight and the impact of tall buildings all around this narrow park. We do not want the park surrounded by tall buildings.

“Many more towers are being planned for the Old Kent Road and taller blocks are already approved along the Albany

Road replacing the Aylesbury Estate."

Southwark Council is considering Peachtree’s planning application, submitted on December 22, last year,

and is due to make a decision in the coming weeks, with construction potentially starting as early as the autumn.

PLAN FOR BURGESS CREATIVE CENTRE

CAMBERWELL

BURGESS PARK business park could soon become the ‘Camberwell Union’ creative centre, if plans to build 500 homes and commercial space on the industrial site are approved.

According to owners Peachtree Services, the existing complex between Southampton Way, Wells Way and Parkhouse Street contains mostly lowquality and ‘obsolete’ buildings and provides limited employment opportunities.

The developer, which has owned the land for 20 years, is looking to demolish the units and build 505 new homes, with 35% classed as ‘affordable’, along with retail units and work spaces. A historic chimney will be kept and used as a set-piece for the new destination.

AN ARCHITECT couple who created their dream home from scratch in Peckham now fear they will be overshadowed by planned new council offices.

Mr John O’Shea and Ms Risha Mukhia say the proposed four-storey building on Queen’s Road will also block daylight from one of their only windows and leave them with just 30 minutes of natural light a day in dark months like December.

The couple, who created their own 3D design of the building themselves to help visualise what it would look like, also fear a bike rack staff entrance being planned metres from their children’s’ bedroom will create extra noise.

They told the News: “We are extremely disappointed and feel the consultation has not been meaningful.

“After designing our dream home to all the planning requirements and maximising the use of light, we now find out that not only will we lose light during the day, we will gain artificial

light at night.

“A fourteen metre high building next to a predominantly one storey house is inappropriate, with 84 cycle bays, the staff entrance and a 24-hour operational plant room located adjacent to our children's bedroom.

“We are not against a council development on the site, but we are very much against overdevelopment and the design which is being proposed.

“A good development will result in civic pride, a bad development will result in civic shame.

“We would like to see a building that brings civic pride to the area, that has community spaces integrated, and has an accurate, well-researched design approach that takes into account the context it is in.”

The couple said the block’s architects, Wernick Buildings, were so impressed with their accurate 3D model that they requested a copy for themselves.

The News reported last week that residents claimed they had not been properly consulted on the proposed new buildings on the site of the Queen’s Road day centre.

Road, said the panoramic view of her top floor flat would be blocked on two sides by the new building.

But it was only after liaising with Mr O’Shea and Ms Mukhia that she realised this would be the case.

When she raised initial concerns with the architects behind the build, she was assured in an email sent by the public relations team at EQ Communications on January 24: “We do not believe that your view will be compromised.”

Southwark has said the new building is needed as other council buildings are no longer fit for purpose.

According to the council, the building will cost £14.4 million, and allow staff from six different offices to work in the same block.

A council spokesperson said: “We are happy to speak again to anyone who has concerns and would welcome a meeting with the residents concerned.

“We are currently carrying out a consultation and all comments will be

carefully considered before a final version of our plans is submitted in a planning application.

“There is plenty of opportunity for local people to comment on and object to aspects of the final design, both at

this consultation stage and through the planning process.”

The News contacted the architects, Wernick Buildings for a response, but did not receive one at the time of going to press.

FIRE CHIEF CALLS FOR SPRINKLERS IN ALL BUILDINGS OF VULNERABLE PEOPLE

SOUTHWARK’S FIRE commander is calling for automatic fire suppression systems – such as sprinklers – to be installed in care homes, highrise buildings and new and refurbished schools.

Figures released by London Fire Brigade revealed there were 22 fires at hostels, care homes, retirement homes and sheltered housing accommodation in Southwark in 2017 – and sprinklers were only installed in nine of these cases.

In 2013 and 2014 there were 21 fires in this type of accommodation in Southwark, 27 in 2015, and five so far in 2018, according to the Brigade.

London Fire Brigade says it believes automatic fire suppression systems play a significant role in reducing the impact of fire on people, property and the environment, as part of an “appropriate package of fire safety

measures”.

Southwark Fire Commander Neil Chisholm said: “It’s a tragic fact that many of the fires we see involve vulnerable people who have mobility and/or health issues that mean they are unable to escape even small fires and they may suffer fatal or life changing injuries before the fire brigade is even called.

“We need to ensure sufficient and appropriate protection measures are in place to safeguard these people where they live and suppression systems should be part of those considerations.

“Sprinklers are the only system which detects a fire, suppresses a fire and raises the alarm.”

The fire commander said sprinkler systems only amounted to about one per cent of the total build cost of some new buildings such as schools if incorporated from the outset.

“There has long been a myth that sprinkler systems are very expensive, and of course costs vary depending on the type of system, but for example in

But after an inspection in February inspectors rated it as ‘good’ in every area.

A Southwark Council spokesperson said sprinklers were installed in all of the local authority’s properties housing vulnerable residents, with the exception of one homeless hostel where work is underway - the work was delayed due to a potential move to another site which did not go ahead.

A BERMONDSEY primary school has been praised by the Deputy Mayor of London after achieving a Healthy Schools London Silver Award.

A 274-ROOM hotel and restaurant are set to be built on a former Lewisham and Southwark College campus.

Plans for the development, drawn up

by Dexter Moren Associates on behalf of Frogmore, were given the green light to go ahead at a planning committee.

The 9,141m2 new build development will include a ground-floor restaurant, fronting onto a public courtyard and pocket park.

Nestled between Waterloo Station and Tate Modern, the mid-market hotel will have two separate blocks of accommodation connected via a bridge link.

A public route between the blocks – the re-instatement of the lost Marlborough Street – will lead through to a pocket park and New Marlborough Yard.

The pocket park will have seating, sculptures and plants.

The restaurant will be open to both the community and hotel guests, with an al fresco dining area spilling from the interior into the courtyard.

Police release CCTV after ‘brutal attack’

DETECTIVES HAVE released an image of a man stabbed in Kennington in the hope of finding his friends or witnesses of the attack.

Dwayne Kevin Buchanan was found stabbed on Kennington Road, near the junction with Black Prince Road, at 11.38am on March 23.

The 30-year-old, who was living in the Kennington area but is believed to originally be from the West Midlands, was taken to a south London hospital by paramedics, where he remains in a critical condition.

His next of kin have been informed and there have been no arrests.

Detectives would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time who saw the assault, any of the parties involved, or anyone who saw the

suspects leave the scene.

DI Sharon Steel from Lambeth CID said: "We know that Dwayne was subjected to a brutal assault and he remains in hospital in a critical condition, but we need more information.

“In addition to witnesses, we are appealing for any friends of Dwayne to come forward; rest assured that any information provided will be kept in strictest confidence.

Investigators found East Dulwich man defrauded Guy’s and Thomas’ NHS Trust nearly £600,000

AN EAST Dulwich locksmith who defrauded Guy’s and Thomas’ NHS Trust of nearly £600,000 was sentenced to six years in prison this week.

A jury unanimously found 55year-old Andrew Taylor, from Ondine Road, guilty at his sentencing at the Inner London Crown Court on Monday, March 26.

The NHS Counter Fraud Authority (NHSCFA) will now seek to recover the £598,000 Taylor had illegally obtained.

The jury heard how Taylor – who had worked for the trust since 1998 – began defrauding the trust after he was appointed as its permanent locksmith in 2006 and given the responsibility to source the best-

value quotes for locksmith supplies.

According to the authority, in 2007 Taylor set up Surety Security, and began exploiting his position at the trust to buy and supply his own hardware at mark ups of up to 1,200%.

Investigators said they discovered that Surety Security was owned and controlled by Taylor himself, and that proceeds from his crime had funded a lavish lifestyle, including a £27,400 brand new Mitsubishi L200.

According to the NHSCFA, Taylor was suspended from his position as a result of the investigation, but resigned before disciplinary proceedings could start.

Sue Frith, interim chief executive of the NHS Counter Fraud Authority, said: “This is a significant and rewarding outcome for the NHSCFA, and sends a clear message that we will intervene and

take action against those who commit fraud against the NHS and who take money originally intended for patient care for their own personal gain.

“Andrew Taylor exploited his position at Guys and St Thomas’ to satisfy his own greed and personal lifestyle.

“The sentence imposed today should act as a clear deterrent to anyone else who thinks that NHS funds are there for their own gain, instead of being there to meet the healthcare needs of everyone.

COUNCIL LEADER Peter John admitted last week that his administration’s record tackling long-term empty homes was ‘unsatisfactory’, after government figures showed Southwark has the highest number of empty homes in London.

Cllr John was speaking at last week’s council assembly, where he was challenged by Liberal Democrat councillor Ben Johnson on the council’s housing record.

Statistics published on March 6, reveal 5,944 homes in Southwark were classed as empty in October 2017 double the number three years ago.

Southwark has more empty homes than any other borough in the capital and neighbouring Lewisham, Lambeth and Tower Hamlets combined.

One in seven of the vacant properties are council owned, and 225 council homes have been empty for more than two years.

At the assembly, Cllr John said the figures for long-term empty homes were ‘alarming’, ‘unsatisfactory’, and that they ‘haven’t managed it properly’, but did not give any background as to why the problem was so acute in the borough or what could be done to put the homes to good use.

When later questioned by the News, he said that figures on empty homes were highly variable, and the statistics showed a ‘snapshot’ of empty homes on a certain day, which changed throughout the year.

According to the council’s own statistics, collected for council tax purposes, there were 5,418 empty homes in October 2017.

These figures include 1,800 homes which are empty for less than three months, such properties with a few days' vacancy between tenants, and homes which cannot be let, like blocks slated for demolition.

Out of 676 empty council homes, the council says 80% have been empty for less than six months, and 287 are ‘actively being worked on and are preallocated or in the bidding cycle’, and 21 are in the process of being signed up by their new tenants.

It also said its power to make empty private properties available was limited.

The Liberal Democrats have called for a council tax increase on empty homes to encourage absentee landlords to put them back on the market, and for the council to create a specific team tasked with reducing the time council-owned homes are left empty.

RESIDENTS HAVE urged the council to bring an “eyesore” house – which has stood empty for 20 years – back into use.

A five-storey terraced house in Brunswick Villas, Camberwell, which is covered in scaffolding and has its windows boarded up, is said to have been unoccupied for two decades.

A similar four-bedroom house in the same street sold for £1,035,000 in December 2017 according to property website Rightmove.

People living in the area say the building is “an utter waste” and are now calling for the council to do what they can to bring the property back into housing policy.

AFAMILY business is bringing pie and mash back to the Blue in Bermondsey.

Jamie and Tammy Jukes will soon be familiar faces at the market place in Southwark Park Road as they set to launch Bermondsey Pie and Mash this Saturday, April 7.

The couple have agreed to sell freshly-baked Manze’s pies at the market every Saturday, and they will also have mash, liquor, Baldwin’s Sarsaparilla – made in Walworth Road – and soft drinks on offer.

“We are bringing a pie and mash shop back to the Blue,” said 44-yearold Jamie, who grew up in Bermondsey.

“There used to be a shop there called Lou Farrows, but it’s been closed for a couple of years now.

“A lot of Millwall fans would go there and some of them would walk to

Tower Bridge Road to Manze’s.

“My Nan used to take me every Saturday to pie and mash when I was younger and then we would have sarsaparilla down East Street.”

Jamie said he was approached by Blue Bermondsey Business Improvement District chair Russell Dryden after a Christmas event proved popular.

“We did a Christmas event down the Blue and it was really busy and we sold out, so Russell asked if we could run a stall permanently,” he said.

“A few years ago it was really quiet down the Blue like a ghost town, but now I’m surprised by how busy it is.

“Our stall will be within the market place where hopefully there will be 25 stalls by May.” Jamie hopes to set up stall from 11am to 4pm every Saturday to start out with but is also looking to cater at events in the area, as well as weddings and parties.

Tenant evicted after council had 63 complaints about noise

A NOISY neighbour has been evicted from a council block in Nunhead, in the first case of its kind since new legislation gave landlords more power to evict anti-social tenants.

Southwark Council said it had received 63 individual complaints in eight years about the tenant, whom the council claims breached several noise abatement notices before eventually being evicted.

Since the anti-social behaviour crime and policing act 2014 came into effect, a breach of a noise abatement notice is now grounds for a landlord to get automatic right of possession.

This case is the first time the council has used the new legislation to evict a council tenant accused of being a noise nuisance.

The council said the individual is still entitled to an assessment and advice from its housing solutions office on finding alternative accommodation.

A council spokesperson, said: “Evicting tenants is, of course, the absolute last resort for us as a council.

But we cannot ignore the misbehaviour of tenants whose actions are causing misery to their neighbours.

“Southwark Council will take appropriate action where tenants have repeatedly been warned about their behaviour.”

‘Stop bailiffs to help 22,000 Southwark children out of proverty’

CHARITIES ARE calling on Southwark Council to cut council tax and stop using bailiffs on its poorest residents, to help 22,000 children living below the poverty line.

According to new government data published last week, 700,000 children in London are growing up in poverty – 37% of all children growing up in the capital.

The government classes a household as below the poverty line if its total income is less than two thirds of the average UK household’s.

Adjustments are made for the number of children, parents, and any specific issues like disabilities or caring responsibilities.

Although the government’s data only shows regional-level statistics, according to estimates by the Centre for Research in Social Policy, 23 per cent of children in Southwark are believed to live in poverty, before their parents’ housing costs are even taken into account.

Once rent is factored in, this figure rises to more than a third, and 22,919 children in total.

Particularly affected wards in Southwark include Chaucer, Faraday, and Grange ward – where 29.17 per cent of children are estimated to live in poverty – rising to 44% when money has covered housing costs.

The London Poverty Alliance, a group of charities and organisations including The Children’s Society, Oxfam, and the Trust for London, is campaigning ahead of next month’s local elections.

The group wants Southwark’s future administrations to commit to key measures to help working and out-ofwork families struggling to make ends meet.

Laura Payne, co-coordinator of the London Child Poverty Alliance said: “Given that two thirds of children in poverty are in working households, we can see this is not just about employment rates.

“It’s about low pay, rising living costs, London’s housing crisis, and cuts to government support for working and non-working households leaving families trapped in financial difficulties that anyone would struggle to get out of.

“We know that despite the bleak national picture of cuts to support for working and non-working low income families there are things that London’s councils can do.

“Councils should pay and promote the London living wage, offer reductions for families who are too poor to pay their council tax, tackle conditions in the private rented sector and commit to not using bailiffs on their poorest residents.”

Southwark Council has been a living wage employer since 2011, and said it proactively encouraged others to join the scheme.

A spokesperson said the council also offered a council tax reduction scheme for residents on a low income or who claim benefits, offering potential reductions of up to 85% for those of working age and up to 100% for pensioners, as well as a hardship fund for additional needs.

The council said there was limited use of enforcement agents to recover council tax, with every effort made to recover it using alternative means.

Doctors hope the hospital garden will help critically-ill people who are suffering from conditions such as delirium to recover more quickly.

AN EAST Dulwich business has been dropping off donations at a food bank to help give back to the community, and is urging other firms to do the same.

Doran Waste Services puts £2 into a company charity fund from every job it does and then buy donations for Southwark Foodbank at the end of each month.

Colin Doran (pictured), who set up the business in November, buys the food and then personally drops it off at the food bank.

The 35-year-old said he came up with the idea as a way of helping another local business and giving back to the community.

“Initially I was going to find a charity and give a percentage of money every month, but I thought this was a bit more hands-on by going to pick up the food and drop it off personally,” he said.

“I wanted to help a local charity because it’s a Southwark-based company and all the guys who work with me live in Southwark.

“A few close friends of mine have used food banks in the past and I know they do a lot of great work for

people in crisis.”

The businessman hopes that as the charity grows, the donations to the foodbank will grow, and he also plans to help other charities in the future.

"We are hoping we can encourage other businesses and people in the area to do something similar,” he added.

“There's a number of ways people can help the Foodbank either by donating food or volunteering.

“You can also donate money directly to the Pecan Charity down in Peckham who run the Foodbank as well as a number of other great causes."

ARK SCHOOLS across Southwark are consulting on new plans to help support trans children and pupils who ‘self-identify’ their gender.

In March the News reported that two women were admitted to a male-only swimming session at Dulwich Leisure Centre after telling front-desk staff that they self-identified as men, as part of a protest highlighting what they claim are worrying changes to the Gender Recognition Act, allowing people to ‘self-identify’ as a man or woman.

Now the News can reveal that complex issue is being discussed at schools across the borough, including Ark Globe Academy in Elephant and Castle and All Saints Academy in Camberwell, in light of the new

legislation, to help support children who believe they were born as the wrong gender, or do not identify as either ‘male’ or ‘female’.

Ark said this week that gender-neutral uniforms could replace traditional ‘boys’ and ‘girls’ outfits, as it tries to ensure all children are given a ‘positive and supportive’ environment where they can thrive.

A spokesperson for ARK said: “Ark’s safeguarding team is developing new guidance documents on gender selfidentification and trans rights within our schools.

“We are developing these guidelines in consultation with our schools, and safeguarding staff are receiving training on this topic this term.

“We will be using the learnings from the training to feed into the guidance.

“As part of this, we will be including guidance on creating a gender-neutral uniform policy. The guidance is to be approved at board level this summer.

“In the interim, each of our schools has dedicated safeguarding leads, who are supported by the Ark central team.

Dr Jane Hamlin, president of the Beaumont Society, an organisation giving support to transgender people since 1996, said she hoped parents would not be alarmed by any future proposals as there was “nothing for them to fear, but plenty to celebrate”.

She told the News: “As a former teacher I know that it is crucial that all children in our schools are supported in order that they may develop their knowledge and skills in a safe and caring

environment.

“This is particularly true for children who identify as trans, so I am delighted that Southwark schools are consulting on changes to their gender policies to ensure that trans, and non-binary children are not discriminated against

SOUTHWARK’S LIBERAL Democrats have published their election manifesto, with housing at the heart of a plan for the borough, promising “big and radical” changes, as well as “quick wins”.

Anood Al-Samerai, leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrats, standing for re-election in May, said the manifesto focused on three key areas: housing, crime and the environment, with housing raised as “by far the number one issue” by residents.

The opposition leader told the News: “The overarching message we had from people is that Southwark is a great place to live but it does not

work for everybody”, and took aim at what she described as Labour’s “appalling record” on housing, saying “big and radical” changes were needed.

She said: “Knocking down council homes and building luxury flats is creating segregated communities and is against the spirit of what makes London great.”

The party believes it can finance new homes, with rent set at no more than one third of the household’s income, and encourage developers to do the same.

She said: “It’s a scandal that 6,000 homes are sitting empty, and every week in my advice surgery people are in tears about their housing situation.

“If you do not have a decent home to live in it affects your employment, your health, and your family.”

The party has said it would not sell

any individual council houses, except under right-to-buy, reduce the turnaround time for council homes to be re-let within four weeks, and use compulsory purchase powers to take over long-term empty homes.

One of the party’s biggest challenges, she said, was to change the perception that the council’s hands were tied on big issues due to government cuts.

“Again and again I hear on the doorstep “The council cannot do anything”, but funding decisions are political decisions.

“The council found a million pounds to give to the Tate.”

Vigilance key to tackling bowel cancer

PIE AND MASH OUT OF THE BLUE Radical changes in car parking in Rotherhithe RESIDENTS OF Rotherhithe may be surprised to learn about the radical changes to the local area now being pushed through by Southwark Council.

Much of the existing parking will be removed from Rotherhithe Street, Railway Avenue and Canon Beck Road, as well as smaller sections of numerous other local roads. With a loss of around 50 parking spaces this will greatly inconvenience those who park in this area, and residents of nearby streets, such as Isambard Place and Clifton Place, will find their roads become clogged up by cars displaced from other roads.

The end result will be major inconvenience to residents over a wide area, but the current council shows no signs of listening to local residents or taking their views into account, and there is only a short window of time for residents to make their concerns heard.

Celebrating Kennington Park’s historic past IN THE spring of 1848, as revolution and unrest consumed Europe, Kennington was at the centre of the fight for social justice in Britain.

Tens of thousands of people gathered

on Kennington Common on the 10th of April, demanding the right to vote.

The Chartist movement was a popular campaign that saw working people come together behind the Charter’s six demands for democratic reform, at a time when only those with land and property were allowed to vote.

The story of the Chartists’ fight for justice included dedicated women's groups, and inspirational figures such as Anne Knight, who produced what is thought to be the earliest leaflet on women’s suffrage, and the radical William Cuffay, son of an emancipated slave.

Fast forward to 2018 — when Brexit, Trump, #Metoo and Black Lives Matter are in the news, amid fears of a breakdown in democratic values — and it’s time to ask – What is the legacy of #Kennington 1848 today?

Join us in Kennington Park to mark the 170th anniversary, and to launch a series of walks, talks, workshops and events for all the community, to celebrate our local park’s dramatic place in the history of protest and democracy.

Heart heroes search

THE BRITISH Heart Foundation (BHF) is launching their Heart Hero Awards 2018 and asking for people to nominate their heart hero.

The awards, which are now in their 4th year, recognise the different ways people fight heart disease.

This year there are three categories: Healthcare Hero, Young Heart Hero and the Inspiration Award.

The Healthcare Hero award will recognise a doctor, nurse, or person working in a healthcare setting who has made a special effort to make a difference to the life of a heart patient or their family.

The Young Heart Hero award will go to an exceptional person under the age of 18 years who has done something amazing for the BHF and is a source of inspiration to others.

The Inspiration award will recognise a person who inspires others through their determination and dedication. Whether that is through their fundraising efforts, taking part in a physical challenge, organising an event, or volunteering activities.

Nominations are open until the 11 May at 4pm. The winners will be announced at a gala awards dinner that will take place in London on the 5 October 2018.

Nine-out-of-ten bowel cancer patients will survive for more than five years if diagnosed early enough, with surgery and radiation treatment the most common procedures. Bowel cancer survival rates have doubled in the past 40 years.

In Southwark, the number of people taking advantage of free bowel screening is 41% which is lower than the national average of 58.5%.

The earlier we detect cancer, the better the chance of survival and people must alert their GP if they start showing tell-tale signs that may indicate a problem.

Potential signs of bowel cancer include: • Bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your poo • A change in bowel habit lasting three weeks or more • Unexplained weight loss • Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason • A pain or lump in your tummy.

The good news is that bowel cancer can be treated effectively if caught early enough and people can minimise the risk by following simple advice including diet and exercise.

Older people are most at risk, but younger people can be affected too.

Currently, everyone between the ages of 60 and 74 registered with a GP is offered bowel cancer screening every two years. People in this age group will automatically be sent an invitation, then their screening kit, so they can do the test at home. Your GP will provide your contact details, so it is important that he or she has your correct name and address.

If you think you are eligible and your kit hasn’t arrived, you can call your local NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme Hub on 0800 707 60 60.

Screening plays an important part in the fight against bowel cancer because the earlier the cancer is diagnosed, the greater the chance it can be cured completely.

Warning for Trainspotters A RICHLY, IMMERSIVE performance, Trainspotting Live is one of those shows you either love or hate. Either way you have to give credit to the brilliant cast and great production, writes Elsie Cullen.

Will, or Eight Lost Years of Young William Shakespeare’s Life, is written and directed by Victoria Baumgartner, and tells the tale of Shakespeare before he was writing plays. In Will we find a young man in love with his new wife, writing poetry and dreaming of one day being able to tell the world all the stories he has in his head.

During his journey we see Will meet Richard Burbage and Christopher Marlowe, and also the Earl of Southampton who becomes a muse for his ‘lascivious’ poetry. In fact, Baumgartner goes further and does not merely hint at the fact that these two young men may have been lovers but gives us a full on snog-fest, right there next to the foundations of the theatre where Shakespeare put on plays 400 years ago. Gadzooks! Stiffen the sinews, I say, summon up the blood.

After moving on from the patronage of the Earl, Will experiences a few ups and downs with Midsummer Night’s Dream, and has confidence issues with his acting skills in the years depicted here, but eventually hits the big time with his Italian plays.

MANUEL PUIG’S story began life as the 1976 novel and has since had turns in cinema and musical theatre with José Rivera and Allan Baker’s new version taking us to the Menier Chocolate Factory’s stage, writes Rosie O’Connell.

It is a story of two vastly different men that find themselves in the same tiny, depressing Argentinian prison cell, one a political prisoner, the other incarcerated for being gay, finding common ground.

Both are lonely, both are scared and as the play progresses their efforts to understand each other guides them from cell mates to something closer to soul mates.

Samuel Barnett’s Molina is a wonderful balance of playful and wounded, providing escapism for both men through his recounts of his favourite films, from Panther Woman to Nazi propaganda and a zombie flick. These are presented

Irina (Victoria Llewllyn) is celebrating her twentieth birthday, however, it is also the anniversary of her father’s death. Olga (Cornelia Baumann) the oldest and single, along with middle sister, Masha (Claire Bowman), unhappily married, are desperate to return to their native Moscow and get away from provincial people and a boring existence. They long to return to the culture and excitement of the charmed life they once savoured. They ridicule their brother Andrei’s (Spencer Lee Osborne) choice of girlfriend ,Natasha (Hannah Victory), from her colourful clothes to her lack of refinement and attempts at speaking French. But when they are married, Natasha moves up the social ladder and becomes relentlessly driven. Andrei ignores her affairs and demands by burying his head in his gambling and debts, while the going is good.

In the final scene the sisters lament their struggle. Okay, a huge tragedy had just taken place but emotion

seemed lost here, apart from the harrowing look on Olga’s face. My issue has always been how blessed they are and yet they continue to complain! I imagine that if you have education, money and success everything would be okay. Apparently not! So, are we all searching for our ‘Moscow’? And how many of us get there? Don’t miss the train! Three Sisters is still relevant today.

Willie or Was He? That Is The Question

Sam Veck plays Will a little too soft and dreamy for too long in this, I feel, because those were harsh, dog eat dog times, and to survive the cut and thrust of Elizabethan England as an actor and playwright you had to toughen up quickly. Beatrice Lawrence impressed as Olivia

Burbage and Ronnie Yorke as Richard Burbage grabbed all the attention when he was on stage.

Worth giving this one a go.

beautifully with Andrzej Goulding’s projected silhouettes painted across the walls of the all encompassing prison set, enhancing the true diversion these tales are providing. Declan Bennett as Valentin provides the perfect juxtaposition against Barnett’s Molina, with his working class, political anger flowing into increasing glimpses into this guerilla’s brutally honest vulnerability. There is a real palpable sense of tenderness between the two which is truly beguiling to watch.

The plot might not be as airtight as it could be, yes we would perhaps expect Valentin to become the slightest bit suspicious regarding his sickness every time he eats the prison food, but so what?

The flow of the performances from the two leads means that you are there with them for every step of the way, with each moment feeling plausible and justified.

Laurie Sansom’s direction is sensitive yet strong supported wonderfully by Jon Bausor’s set that surrounds the theatre,

giving a real sense of isolation meaning plot holes that would perhaps be otherwise distracting are barely noticed until after leaving the theatre.

Through the 1 hour 40 minute no interval runtime, the two men cease to be the polar opposites that they begun their time together as and become two people that are allowed to express themselves freely. It is a story of hope and tragedy, consequently resulting in a love that while knowing its physical limits, transcends beyond this. Both men find a freedom and human connection within each other and there is just something really beautiful about that.

Fri - Sat 8am - 3am BELUSHI’S SELLS itself on being very student-friendly, with nightly entertainment that ranges from Karaoke, live music and beer pong. Its happy hours allow ample time to drink the 2 for 1 deals on cocktails, beer and cider and the hostel above it provide a steady stream of backpackers looking for some lively London nightlife, writes Michael Holland.

We entered into a barrage of light and sound with screens everywhere you looked, some showing

Boss Lyndsey gave myself and Kay a walking-talking tour of Belushi’s recent refurbishment. It is a huge space that seems to go on and on, with each booth having its own screen. Downstairs is just as big, but down there you can reserve your own space with sofas, beer pumps, wine fridges and food delivered from the kitchen while you and your guests watch your sport of choice.

After showing us to our table Lyndsey gave us menus and ran off a list of IPAs for me to choose from.

The extensive bar snacks were all reasonably priced at £5 each, but we had the 5 for £16 deal, which was even more reasonable. I picked out a couple and Kay chose the other three and it wasn’t too long before our Australian waiter Callum was laying out a spread of fried food and dips for us to get stuck in to.

It’s always good to try something different if the opportunity arises, and in Belushi’s there is plenty of

opportunity. Hence we had bowls of Chorizo in Jagermeister, fried gherkins in breadcrumbs and pulled pork Quesadillas, along with the more recognisable Garlic Fries and Salt & Pepper Squid. Kay wouldn’t eat the squid because she doesn’t like the word squid, which meant more for me, but we did our best at sharing the rest. The dishes, though, were quite large and we needed to have a break to recharge the glasses after a while.

There is a good atmosphere in Belushi’s. Looking through to the next room a group were necking shots with lager chasers; on the screen in the next booth a close up on Ronaldo showed his frustration at being three goals behind; on our TV we struggled to follow the puck skidding across the ice; behind us the Karaoke man set up his equipment and to our right we caught a glimpse of female wrestling, but that wasn’t WWE, just a couple of boisterous students.

We did our best to finish off the

snacks but retired after a while, beaten by the chorizo, and much to the chagrin of Lyndsey who was hoping we were going to try the burgers. Alas, we were out of the game and could not manage any more meat. That was a shame as they looked so good as they went past us to other diners.

But after a decent interval and another beer we were ready to check out the desserts. And what a piece of work they were! Eventually, and after much discussion, we came down on the side of Bacon Waffles, which seemed like a mix between breakfast, brunch and dinner and consisted of warm waffles, vanilla ice cream, maple syrup and crispy bacon bits! For some reason I feel embarrassed saying this, but we loved it! Bacon and ice cream is the future. Trust me.

Belushi’s is a friendly place with friendly staff, and is ideal for those who want to enjoy life without taking it too seriously.

EACH YEAR since 2003 local people have been voting for the people, events and places they have felt worthy of a blue plaque.

The scheme came about after the ‘News’ approached English Heritage to get more of our history recognised, only to be told that most of our buildings would not qualify as they were destroyed in the blitz and post war era.

Working in partnership with Southwark Heritage Association and Southwark Council, over 50 of our own blue plaques have been erected.

Nominations for this year is now open.

MORE THAN 40,000 prints and photographs cataloguing 300 years of London life have been newly digitalised by genealogy website, Ancestry.co.uk, including snapshots of Southwark’s past.

The collection of images from 17041989 include landmarks through the ages, like Tower Bridge, and portraits of the people who lived and worked across Bermondsey and beyond, with captions telling the real-life stories behind the pictures.

The collection, amassed by Getty Images, is now available for people tracing their family tree to research online.

The archive includes a rare photograph of Southwark’s Duke Street from 1851, categorised under ‘Misery and Poverty’, Southwark’s London Fire Brigade in 1936, and air raid shelter canteen serving up food for up to 8,000, on February 27, 1941.

Other scenes captured include sunbathers at Holborn Oasis in 1955, Downing Street before stricter security kept the crowds at bay, The Mall on the eve of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, and a rather impressive lunch with a view.

Ancestry spokesperson Russell James said: “These black and white prints and photos are a journey through London’s history and beyond, capturing the daily routines and moments of celebration experienced by millions of the capital’s residents.

ohn Keats School is a brand new 2 form entry primary school with a 30 place nursery on the Rotherhithe New Road in SE16.

John Keats School will be open from this September, 2018 for two reception classes totalling 60 children and will grow by 60 children year on year.

John Keats has been purpose built as a state of the art facility to meet the education needs of children in Southwark. We are very excited about the prospect of working in this amazing facility which will enhance the opportunities for our pupils and

be a model of 21st century schooling.

John Keats School came about as a result of local need for new primary school places and a desire to offer the very best education in an area where children deserve the very best life chances. Working closely with Southwark Council, Trustees at Communitas were keen to help meet the shortfall in primary places by opening John Keats School.

John Keats School is part of the Communitas Education Trust which includes the ‘Outstanding’ John Donne School in Peckham. Some of the highly experienced team, including me as Headteacher, will be

transferring to John Keats from John Donne School. The approach to education at John Keats will be similar to that at John Donne. We will ensure that children have access to a creative and inspiring curriculum right throughout their primary education.

John Keats School will be a catalyst for change in the local community. It will sit at the heart of Southwark Council’s planned development for the Old Kent Road and provide a much needed, high quality school for an expanding local population.

It is essential that John Keats School continues the traditions of the Communitas Education Trust in

providing a highly pastoral, effective and successful education experience for children and their families around the Old Kent Road. The school will offer wrap-around care from a breakfast club to after school provision. The school will also work closely with the local community to

provide support to parents who need it as well as a valuable resource which can be used by community groups.

John Keats School will continue to have open days throughout this academic year.

DULWICH HAMLET assistant boss Junior Kadi has said the support they have received from supporters this year has made them determined to keep their run going and win promotion this season.

Hamlet have put their off-the-field worries to one side to maintain their Bostick League Premier Division title challenge, and are currently in second place, two points off Billericay.

Gavin Rose’s side have seen Billericay fail to fully take advantage of their games in hand. Billericay could have moved nineteen points clear of Hamlet, as they had eight games in hand on their rivals as recently as late January.

Hamlet won four of their five league fixtures in March, despite the month being one of the most turbulent in the club’s history.

With the padlocks keeping the gates locked at Champion Hill, Hamlet moved eight miles down the road to Tooting & Mitcham’s ground, where they won their first league game.

Kadi praised boss Rose and the squad for their focus as doubts remain over the club’s future.

South after two successive play-off final defeats.

“There are a lot of things that go on off the pitch but once you get on the pitch you just want to play football. We train hard and win, lose or draw you still want to get out there and play the best that you can,” Kadi told the News.

“It’s been well-documented what’s been happening. Gav has done a fantastic job because he has a lot to deal with behind the scenes with off-thepitch stuff. He’s kind of kept the players away from it.

“Obviously everyone knows what’s been going on with the publicity we’ve

had. The boys are focused. We’ve got a pretty experienced squad there and they know that not everything is going to be rosy all of the time. They’re alright.

“Everyone is behind us, but we’ve always had great support here. It doesn’t really surprise me, the supporters are amazing.

“We just want to do the best that we can for everyone that has supported us.

“On our day we have shown that we can beat anybody. We’ve just got to get our form right, be consistent. We had a little shady spell not too ago.

“But the boys have been fantastic and we just have to maintain that.

DULWICH HAMLET have announced new dates and times for two of their fixtures that were abandoned and postponed due to the weather in the last week.

Hamlet’s fixture against Dorking Wanderers at Tooting was abandoned on Good Friday due to a waterlogged pitch.

That game will take place on Thursday April 12 with a 7.45pm kick-off. Entry will be by donation to The 12th Man Scheme.

Their league fixture against Kingstonian, which was postponed also because of a waterlogged pitch on Monday, had yet to be rearranged by the time we went to press.

The Lionesses are aiming to continue their title charge.

Meanwhile, Hamlet’s London Senior Cup semi-final was at Carshalton Athletic on Wednesday. It was taking place at a different venue as the surface was deemed to be more suitable with more bad weather forecast.

Lionesses frustrated by postponements

MILLWALL LIONESSES’ postponed league fixture against Sheffield FC last weekend means they will have played just once in eight weeks when they next take to the pitch.

Lionesses boss Lee Butch jokingly posted on Twitter ‘Who wants a friendly?’ after the game was one of a number all over the country to fall foul of the weather.

That followed the postponement of their Women’s Super League 2 game at Tottenham Hotspur Ladies last week.

Millwall have another top-six chance

The Lions led at the break and were sixth in the table at that point after Jake Cooper’s header, but two quick Martyn Waghorn goals threatened to derail the promotion charge.

George Saville scored his tenth goal of the season to make it 2-2, and Millwall should have taken one of the numerous late chances they created to climb into the play-off places.

“We are all gutted because we know where we could have been,” Hutchinson said. “The gaffer made a point of it as well. If that two points comes and bites us in the bum at the end of the season, we’ll be gutted.

“We have got to make sure we don’t get deflated too much, because we are playing well. Not many teams are going to come to this place and have 22 shots at

goal.

“So, tough one to take, but we’ll move on. We have got a lot of work to do now to recover and get ready for the game [against Bristol City]. It’s going to be another tough game, which will be a little bit of a make or break for both teams.

“It’s going to be a difficult game, but at The Den you always feel confident.”

Millwall struggled to control the game last Monday, against a side with little to play for and who could take the shackles off.

Mick McCarthy will leave his post as Ipswich boss at the end of the season, and his side played with freedom against the visitors.

Hutchinson continued: “There’s no pressure on them at all and it’s come at a time when I think Mick McCarthy just said, ‘let’s go and outscore them’, because they took risks all over the park.

“They were leaving it one against one high up the pitch. But I think the last ten minutes we probably feel a little bit gutted we didn’t get the points.

“We have had a lot of these [types of games] this season. We just need to make sure that we don’t let this one influence

us too much and deflate us because we played well but, yes, we are not happy.

“We look at the table and realise where we would have been if we got the three points. That’s the way it’s going to be and there is going to be a lot of twists and turns until the end of the season. We have just got to make sure we keep pushing on.”

Millwall were unusually defensively porous at Portman Road. Jordan Archer spilled a shot before Waghorn scrambled in his first, and then the Tractor Boys striker took advantage of Cooper’s slack back-pass to slide in a second.

But Hutchinson didn’t criticise his team-mates.

“To be honest, they took a shot, it got palmed down and it looked like he [Archer] had two hands on the ball and then it’s just bobbled around and he’s put it in the net,” Hutchinson said.

“Defensively it’s not great.

“The big man [Cooper] will hold his hands up for the second one. Obviously we are on a good run at the moment. We have been stopping shots and stopping goals, so we’re gutted about conceding two.”

Williams’ goal was his first of the season, and he was hoping it would help catch the eye of Republic of Ireland boss Martin O’Neill as the midfielder still holds out hope of a first senior international call-up.

“Most definitely, any headlines are good,” Williams said. “To score a goal and be where we are in the table at the moment is only going to benefit me and hopefully in the future I’ll be selected.

“I probably would have been disappointed had I not got off the mark by the end of the season. To score so early in the game was a nice feeling. It got the ball rolling.

“The way we start and play is fast and frantic and we could possibly have had a few more early goals this year.”

Williams admitted not everyone would be hoping the Lions win promotion. “I don’t think a lot of people

would be happy if we got into the Premier League, but they [the fans] would be buzzing.”

When asked why people wouldn’t be happy, Williams joked: “You know

yourself.”

His side can take another big step towards making some rival fans’ fears a reality by beating Bristol City at home on Saturday.

SHAUN WILLIAMS scored Millwall’s quickest goal of the season last Friday and then confidently said: “If we make the play-offs we will go up.”

Williams scored in the 29th second when he headed home Ben Marshall’s cross and Lee Gregory added a second before the break, his tenth goal of the season.

The result moved Millwall to within a point of the play-off spots, a situation that remained unchanged after Monday’s 2-2 draw at Ipswich.

“We’re so close to it now and we don’t see why we can’t keep going. If we keep winning games it’s in our hands,” Williams said.

“I don’t see how he hasn’t been touted for other jobs, but hopefully he will stay here and take the club as far we he can.

JED WALLACE admitted Millwall were an “average team with a good front two” last season – and believes the disappointment after the 2-2 draw at Ipswich last Monday shows how far the side has come since.

Wallace said the Lions “battled” their way out of League One, but they have surprised many people this season with their current fourteen-game unbeaten run carrying them to the cusp of the play-off places.

The winger was left scratching his head after his side missed at least five scoreable chances in the last five minutes at Portman Road as they failed to take advantage of slips by top-six rivals Middlesbrough, Bristol City and Sheffield United.

Lee Gregory shot straight at Bartosz Bialkowski after Wallace had teed him up, Aiden O’Brien hit the post, and Mahlon Romeo and Wallace saw their efforts saved by the goalkeeper.

“I have no idea [how we have not won that game]. It shows how far we have come really,” Wallace said. “When I signed last year on loan, in my opinion we were an average team with a good front two.

“We battled our way out of League One and this season, we have just gone to Ipswich and we are absolutely devastated with a draw. We have to win the game, we have to win that game of football.

Hopefully it will turn out to be a good point with the results around us, [the table] is the same as it was [Monday morning].

“You have to show that ruthlessness. You are talking now about the teams we are competing with: Fulham with [Aleksandar] Mitrovic, Middlesbrough with [Patrick] Bamford. But, to be fair to the players that missed the chances, they are normally the ones that you would want on the end of them.

“Like I said, to come to Ipswich and be absolutely gutted with a point shows how far we have come. It was comical really, how it didn’t go in. The one that’s hit the post, bouncing around. And we gave them two goals.

“It’s a familiar story for us. How we are not comfortably in the top six, I will never know. All season long, the only games that we deserved to lose were Wolves and Derby away and, apart from that, we have been in every single match. It’s a credit to how far we have come and Bristol City, for me, at The Den is a must-win game.”

Had Millwall taken any of those late chances they would now be sixth, a point off Derby County.

“We are gutted because we know we should have won,” Wallace said. “It’s a ruthless changing room. We haven’t done as well as we have this year by everyone high-fiving each other. We demand it from each other. Every single players demands it.

“Moro [Steve Morison] demands it from me to put good crosses in and I demand it from Coops [Jake Cooper] to win his headers and that’s why we have been as successful as we have this year.

“We have to bounce back this weekend, and let’s be honest, we have been on a fourteen-game unbeaten run. We have won nine out of eleven, so to come here and get a point, in the long run it might not be a bad thing and there are loads of positives to take from it. We go onto the next one.

“It’s easy to get carried away with yourself and remember that we are playing Championship football - this is a difficult league.

“But, as I said, Saturday now, and I fancy ourselves against anyone at The Den. We look forward to another full stadium, that’s only going to help us and we kick on again.”

Winger sets wins target

MILLWALL NEED to win at least four of their last six games to have a chance of a top-six finish, Jed Wallace believes.

The Lions face three of their direct play-off rivals – Bristol City, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough – and wins in those three games would put them in a commanding position.

They also play Fulham and Aston Villa, who are both almost assured of finishing in the top six.

Millwall face Bolton in a trickylooking away game, Wanderers battling to stay in the division and a recent bogey side for Millwall.

“Whose phone is that?” Keane demanded to know. “That’s the second time it’s gone off.” It’s one of the numerous amusing clips on YouTube involving former Ipswich boss Keane.

On Monday, a journalist sitting in front of Neil Harris had just asked for his reaction to the 2-2 draw at Portman Road – a result that meant the Lions missed out on entering the top six – when his phone started ringing.

Harris had just seen his players squander chance after chance in the last five minutes as a combination of the woodwork and goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski denied them three points.

Harris had come in with a face like thunder to answer questions from the press – but here there was no stare-down, no rebuking of the journalist for a lack of manners.

Instead, a smile broke across the Lions manager’s face as he playfully teased the journalist, who was scrambling to silence his phone. “Schoolboy error, that,” Harris joked. “Well, that’s lightened the mood anyway.”

Harris is not the same character as Keane though a fierce will to win is a shared trait in both men. The theory is that Keane couldn’t understand how his players couldn’t do the simple things he always did in his career, how some of them didn’t have the same manic desire to win not just every game but every tackle they contested.

Harris is more patient and understanding, though probably possesses similar intensity, something Steve Morison alluded to recently.

Based on resources and the market they shop in, Millwall should be nowhere near the top six. At this point of the season the odds had it that they would be scrapping for every point with Burton and Barnsley trying to beat the drop.

At the start of the campaign a point at Ipswich in April would have been seen as a good result. But on Monday there was real disappointment and frustration, especially as the Lions had also missed out on the club record of seven successive away league wins.

Middlesbrough’s late equaliser at Burton didn’t help, though Bristol City losing and Cardiff denying Sheffield United a win with a late goal softened the blow for Millwall.

There is no playing it down now, no insisting that a top-six finish is an impossible dream.

The expectations have changed radically.

This game stretched the unbeaten league run to fourteen, yet Harris revealed he had

criticised his players in the dressing after the game.

“I’m very careful with my words,” Harris said. “I know I might sound a little bit cutting but that’s got us to where we are at the moment. The players know my mentality and they know my character. If I let off steam and said a few choice words after the game, it was for the right reasons.

“I want the team to be successful. We could have got the club record of away league wins and we didn’t achieve it. That disappoints me. Everyone needs to know we have standards.

“This opportunity doesn’t come along very often, to be in this position, not at this club anyway.

“We have to grasp that. The effort was outstanding, the effort every day in training is outstanding.

“But the fine detail has to be better and it’s my job to demand that.”

MILLWALL CAN deliver a devastating blow to Bristol City’s hopes of making the play-offs with a win at The Den on Saturday.

The only thing that separates the sides in the Championship table is goals scored, City having accumulated six more than their rivals this season.

But on form this year the Lions really hold the upper hand. Neil Harris’ side are unbeaten since New Year’s Day and as recently as February there were twelve points between these sides in the table.

Bristol City were booed during their 1-0 home defeat to Brentford last Monday, in contrast to the Millwall players, who were cheered off the pitch at Ipswich despite the disappointment for Lions fans of seeing their side miss out on moving into the play-off spots.

Millwall could hardly be in better shape physically, either, with six games left. Only Byron Webster is out, with Aiden O’Brien pushing for a start.

Robins boss Lee Johnson has been trying to rally support for his side, and by Wednesday morning

they had sold 1,600 tickets from their 2,000 allocation this weekend.

“We need people now,” Johnson told Bristol City’s official website.

"We need that team cohesion. A win changes the mindset and we will have 2,000 supporters traveling to Millwall.

“I know everybody was frustrated on Monday but it is not ideal when you're jeering some players who have worked their socks off.

“I have endured it myself so I know how it feels, but we're in an excellent position in the league and we need full support for the remaining games.

“If we secure promotion then that will be great, but if we don’t then we go again next year.”

The sides drew 0-0 at Ashton Gate back in August.

ragged, open game when neither side ever really had proper control.

Ipswich were leaving three players up front when Millwall got a corner, throwing caution to the wind knowing they can’t go up or down this season.

It always felt like one of those awkward afternoons, especially when early on Jake Cooper awkwardly barged into Martyn Waghorn and the visitors could not have had a lot of complaints had referee Stephen Martin awarded a spot-kick.

Jordan Archer then made a double save from Waghorn before winger Mustapha Carayol cut in from the left to fire just over the crossbar.

Millwall went ahead against the run of play. Cooper had stayed forward after a free-kick moments earlier, and when Ben Marshall crossed from the left side of the box the centre-back headed home his fourth goal this season (above, inset).

You always wondered what the reaction of the Ipswich players and fans would be

to falling behind, given their season is rolling to an anti-climactic end and they know boss Mick McCarthy won’t be in charge next season. And Cooper’s goal certainly quietened the home support, to the extent you could hear Harris’ instructions to his players.

McCarthy has admitted he’s not comfortable with the situation, and afterwards compared Ipswich to a “driverless car”.

But, again, with little to lose he brought on attacker Ben Folami at half-time for left wing-back Myles Kenlock, switched from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2 and his side looked much more of a threat.

Waghorn is the type of player who looks like he could play for Millwall, and he certainly gave Shaun Hutchinson a tough afternoon. Seven minutes into the second half Waghorn was on his backside in the box as players scrambled for the ball after Archer had spilled Cole Skuse’s shot and Folami had flunked a follow-up attempt.

Necessity is the mother of invention and Waghorn seemed to scoop the ball up between his feet and then it was somehow rolling into the net. Waghorn was credited with the final touch even if several replays didn’t clear up much.

Millwall had the third best defensive record in the division going into this game, and Cooper and Hutchinson have been outstanding in this run. But Cooper was just having one of those eventful days at both ends of the pitch and two minutes after Ipswich’s equaliser he tried to pass back to Archer but Waghorn read it, nipped in to round the goalkeeper and roll home for 2-1.

But the 1,982 in the away corner of the ground almost immediately defiantly launched into a chant of, ‘No one likes us, we don’t care’ despite the incredible dream possibly slipping away.

Their players responded, driving at their

opponents. No Millwall player more than Jed Wallace showed more determination to get his side back on terms. An hour in he sprinted towards the box, his cross was tipped out by Bialkowski but only to George Saville, who took a touch before sweeping a beautifully crisp finish into the far corner (above, main). It was his tenth goal of the season.

Game on.

The frenetic place continued, gaps all over the place in a game of attacks versus defences with both midfields unable to offer much control.

Then came that last period that annoyed Harris so much. How Millwall didn’t take one of their chances is as baffling as how they didn’t score at Nottingham Forest on the opening day when they had 23 shots on goal.

Lee Gregory had the best of them, Wallace’s back-heel leaving him with only Bialkoswki to beat but the striker put his effort too close to the goalkeeper. Aiden

“I’ll have mellowed by the time I see them [Tuesday],” Harris added. “But I’m hungry for more and it’s important that we have standards and discipline and organisation. We need a clinical edge as well because that’s got us to where we are at the moment.”

NEIL HARRIS has cranked up the pressure on Bristol City – saying the Robins “have to” reach the play-offs this season.

The two sides meet at The Den on Saturday with only goals scored – 56 against 50 – putting Lee Johnson’s side ahead of the Lions in the

Championship table.

Harris admitted he would rather face teams with something to play for, after the 2-2 draw at Portman Road on Monday with an Ipswich side sitting in mid-table with only their final position to be decided.

At the moment, all of Millwall’s final six games are against sides either going for automatic promotion, the play-offs or hoping to avoid relegation.

Bristol City spent more than double on one player – striker Famara Diédhiou – this season than Millwall did making ten permanent signings.

The sides drew 0-0 at Ashton Gate earlier this season, when Millwall created the best chances but let the hosts off the hook.

Bristol City have been in the top six for the majority of the season, and on Boxing Day they were 20 points ahead of Millwall. But they go into Saturday with just three league wins in their last sixteen games.

Millwall have won ten of their last sixteen Championship games and will overtake their opponents in the table with a victory this weekend.

“I’d certainly look forward to playing

Bristol City on Saturday, they have to get into the play-offs, really, they have to be above Millwall,” Harris said.

“It’s not right for them to be below Millwall. That’s a big game at The Den and a great one for us.

“Teams like Ipswich, like Forest, like QPR after their result against Norwich, they are dangerous teams. They’re not in danger at the bottom and they’re not going to make the top six.

“They go one way or another.

Ipswich were right at it. They really played for their manager and rightly so. They played in an attacking

expansive game. It’s hard to play against, they play risk-and-reward football.

“We saw Forest doing it to a certain degree. I’d much rather play games against teams that are fighting for their lives or going for promotion because you get real structure to it.

“We’re playing with the attitude at the moment that we are enjoying ourselves, but we play with structure.

Teams at the top and the bottom have to do that but teams around the middle can play with a carefree attitude. We saw Ipswich do that.”

LIONS DUO ON LIST FOR MARCH AWARDS

SHAUN HUTCHINSON has been nominated for the Sky Bet Championship player of the month award for March – while Neil Harris is also in the mix for the manager’s gong for the second month in a row.

Harris missed out last month as Cardiff’s Neil Warnock took the award, but Millwall’s record of four league wins in five games in March made him

an obvious candidate for another nomination.

Harris’ Lions are on a fourteen-game unbeaten league run, just two off the best sequence in his time in charge, set last season in League One. They have confounded expectations this season by giving themselves a chance of a top-six finish with six games left.

Hutchinson has played every minute of Millwall’s league campaign, a remarkable achievement given his injury struggles last season.

The 27-year-old centre-back has

formed one of the best defensive pairings in the division with Jake Cooper, and before last Monday’s wobble at Ipswich the Lions had the third best defence in the Championship.

Harris has won the monthly award once before, last season in League One after guiding the team to four wins in six games in February.

Aiden O’Brien and Jordan Archer won monthly player awards in 2015-16, while Harris and Steve Morison scooped one each in successive months in 2009-10 on the way to promotion to the Championship.
