Will Rotherhithe residents have to be largely car-free?

T

HERE IS little doubt that the congestion along Jamaica Road is at chronic levels, so it is surprising that proposals to build a segregated cycle superhighway were backed by a massive 83 per cent of the public.

Politicians and the general public would of course welcome a segregated cycle lane, as the level of accidents and deaths on the capital’s road have increased as more and more people take to using a bike as a quick way to get around London.

However, for residents living in the north of the borough, the ability at peak times to avoid using the A200 (stretching from London Bridge to Greenwich) can be difficult. Indeed, for those living in Canada Water and on the Rotherhithe Peninsula it is virtually impossible.

This area is seeing huge growth as the 46acre Canada Water masterplan takes place. It will involve a new town centre and high street with offices, retail, leisure and public spaces, as well as up to 3,500 new homes.

So, with the current 24 hour bus lane now being replaced by Cycle Superhighway 4 and the bus lane taking over part of the two lanes of traffic – the A200 will become a no-go for many motorists.

People living in the area will have to see this route as only to be used by car if absolutely essential. Indeed last year Deputy Leader of the council and local Rotherhithe ward councillor Stephanie Cryan told the News something radical had to be done if the cycle superhighway was to work – including a toll charge for Rotherhithe Tunnel, or even an extension of the congestion zone.

Will Rotherhithe residents, existing and new, have to now face up to the fact that they will be living in a largely car-free area?

Arments fans can apply to become ‘pie co-ordinator’ at Walworth Road institution

FANS OF Walworth’s famous Arments pie and mash house could be in the running for their dream job.

The historic shop on Westmoreland Road is hiring for a new postal pie coordinator, and a counter and kitchen staff member.

The postal pie coordinator will to help manage online orders of their traditional pie and mash meals served with jellied eels and liquor, and make sure they get to hungry customers on time.

The traditional cockney shop is known for its friendly rivalry with Tower Bridge Road’s Manze’s and for its charity work

Third-generation Arments owners, Roy and Cheryl, say business is booming for the 104-year-old shop and its pies are now delivered all over the UK. Mr Arment told the News: “We need hard-working, well-motivated individuals.

“We all try and help each other.

Sometimes it is quite chaotic - our online orders have doubled in a year - but we normally get there in the end.

“Everyone working here likes pies and

THE FAMILY and friends of Millwall fan Sophie Powell, who died of kidney cancer at the age of eleven, have raised more than £24,000 in her memory after completing a 54-mile walk to all of London’s professional football clubs.

Sophie Powell’s parents Steve and Karen, 47 and 48, and twin Emma, twelve, were joined by relatives, friends – and even complete strangers – for the two-day sponsored walk, which began at Barnet and finished at Millwall.

In total 75 people took part in the challenge, including former Millwall players Jimmy Carter and Brian Horne who joined the group for part

of the walk, as well as Millwall fans who travelled from as far away as the Netherlands and Scotland.

They managed to raise £24,283 (including gift aid) towards Sophie’s dream of buying a holiday home in the Isle of Wight for families with children battling cancer.

Overall, £85,735 has been raised in Sophie’s memory, which will also be donated to four charities close to her heart.

Speaking to the News, Karen said her family had been “overwhelmed” by the amount of support they had received and that they felt “incredibly

proud” of both themselves and Sophie.

“It was tough going but nothing compared to the long journey Sophie had; she was definitely the inspiration for everyone to keep on going,” said Karen, who is a personal assistant but also works as a receptionist at Millwall on match days.

“It was great to spend two days walking surrounded by family and friends who support us and who loved Sophie.

“Emma [Sophie’s twin sister] took it all in her stride and was leading the way – we are so incredibly proud of her.”

“The Millwall fans who flew in from the Netherlands said they were

just inspired by Sophie’s story and they managed to raise £1,800 which is incredible,” said Karen.

The group managed to get pictures at many of the football grounds and even had the chance to see Chelsea’s Premier League trophy and were given a tour of Arsenal’s stadium.

Karen said Sophie’s family felt “emotional and overwhelmed” by the end of the walk, which took them eleven hours each day.

“The amount we raised was beyond my expectations,” she added. “I didn’t have a figure in my head but it was fantastic to raise that amount and something for everyone who took part to be proud of.”

Sophie was just nine years old when

she was diagnosed with a Wilms tumour, a form of childhood kidney cancer, in March 2015 – just weeks after her mum Karen also had surgery for a similar cancer. She sadly died in January 2017.

Items donated by the London football clubs during the sponsored walk will be auctioned at a function after Millwall’s home match against Bristol City on April 7.

There will also be a Rangers Legends v Legends of Chels charity match held at Sutton United FC on June 9.

Arch street art in memory of terror attack BERMONDSEY

STREET ARTIST Jimmy C (James Cochran), known in London for his work paying tribute to David Bowie and William Shakespeare, has produced a major work of art in memory of the London Bridge terror attack.

The work shows a series of hearts floating in space and is painted under one of Network Rail’s arches on Stoney Street, in Southwark.

Eight people were killed and dozens injured after a van driven by three muslin extremists drove into pedestrians on London Bridge before

launching a knife attack in Borough Market.

“The terror attacks shocked everyone who loves our city,” said Jimmy. “It is a great honour to be able to create a lasting image to the memory of those who lost their lives and to the resilience and spirit of London.”

Network Rail’s Eddie Burton, who manages community rail projects and worked with Jimmy C on the project, added: “We’ve worked closely with Jimmy C in the past and knew he would create something beautiful for London on our arch.” Network Rail previously worked with Jimmy C on a Shakespeare portrait on Clink Street, in Borough.

AN ELDERLY Bermondsey man has become the latest resident to fall victim to a cashpoint theft.

Geoffrey Attridge had £200 stolen from his account after he initially thought an ATM had swallowed his card.

The 77 year old said he tried to use two cash points on Southwark Park Road at about 10.15am on February 23 before his card appeared to be swallowed at a third cash point.

But it was later revealed that someone managed to withdraw £200 from his account using a cash point near Surrey Quays Tesco store that same day.

Speaking to the News, Mr Attridge said: “I first tried to withdraw £50 at the Lloyds TSB cash point on Southwark Park Road, then I tried the Post Office, and then I tried the Blue Newsagent.

“The first two times it just said it wasn’t available after I put my pin number in and said how much I wanted and then the third machine swallowed my card.

“I was there for about five minutes and no one else had come at that time but when it didn’t come out I pressed the button to cancel and it just never came out.

“I had to borrow £500 off a friend because I had no money for near enough two weeks.”

The News previously reported the stories of two pensioners who were both conned out of £300 by opportunists during distraction thefts at cash points on Southwark Park Road.

Thieves swiped one card in broad

daylight at the cash point outside the Blue Newsagent, while teh second pensioners was left in tears after her card was stolen at an ATM outside the Post Office.

In both of these cases, the brazen opportunists withdrew the money from a cash point outside a Tesco Express store just yards down the road.

Mr Attridge said he believed cash points in the area should have more security, such as a pin pad cover, to protect people.

He added that London Mutual Credit Union had refused to reimburse the £200 stolen from his account.

“I was told it was my fault because I didn’t cover my pin number,” he said.

A spokesperson for London Mutual Credit Union told the News Mr Attridge’s money would be refunded, although it was not their policy, and urged people to take care while using cash machines.

How to stay safe at the cashpoint

Advice from Action Fraud on how to protect yourself while using a cash point: Protect yourself: • Check a cash machine every time you use one. Always cover the keypad when entering your PIN and don’t make it obvious which buttons you’re pressing • Take a look around you. If someone’s standing too close, get your card back without withdrawing any money and walk away What to look out for: • A wobbly or bulky part that doesn’t seem to belong with the machine, such as a cover over the card slot or a loose keypad • Purchases and withdrawals start appearing on your account that you don’t remember making • Some cash machines are built entirely by fraudsters. Be cautious using a ‘standalone’ machine, rather than a ‘hole in the wall’ embedded in the front of a building

Mayor launches sport fund in Peckham school PECKHAM

SADIQ KHAN visited Peckham’s Harris Academy last week to launch funding for youth sport in London.

At his morning visit, the London Mayor announced he had joined forces with Comic Relief to set up a new programme, Sport Unites.

Sport Unites will help children and young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, get active and integrate with their wider

community.

A new ‘London Together Fund’ will give out grants of £25,000 to £150,000 to sports projects across the capital.

Khan launched the fund at Peckham Academy where he met students taking part in Netball 4 Change, a Comic Relief funded project.

Netball 4 Change is also believed to be one of the first sports programmes to address social media use and safety online as well as getting kids into sport.

The mayor spoke to pupils about their experience of social media and watched the netball team in action.

Sadiq Khan said: “I am passionate about grassroots sport and we must harness its unique power to bring people together and to break down barriers.

“Sport can help strengthen social ties and has a long history of tackling discrimination and promoting equality, respect and justice.

“Sport Unites will use sport to improve social integration in our great city and I’m delighted to be working closely with Comic Relief on the London Together Fund to help increase cohesion in our communities and increase opportunities for all.”

THE COUNCIL has endorsed British Land’s huge Canada Water masterplan and struck a deal giving the local authority the first chance to secure new social-rented homes.

The local authority shook hands with the developer to ensure the future regeneration of Canada Water and secure benefits for residents.

These include having the first option to acquire the new social-rented homes as council homes, and a new public leisure centre to replace Seven Islands.

The new agreement, which was approved at a cabinet meeting this month, will mean the council will increase its land holdings and take 20 per cent ownership of the whole development as part of a master development agreement with British Land. This includes land not currently in the council’s freehold ownership.

As each plot comes forward for development, the council will have the option to either invest in that plot, sell out its interest, or just retain its land interest.

This flexibility will allow the council to decide whether to invest into the scheme or not in the future.

Police take to Twitter after finding ‘secret gardener’s’ cannnabis farm in block roof

POLICE TOOK to Twitter last week to jokingly commend the ‘secret gardener’ of Camberwell’s horticultural talents, after uncovering a cannabis farm hidden in the roof of a block on Elmington Road.

PC Mark McKay and team found seventeen cannabis plants growing in the space above the residential building, but they are still searching for the green-fingered culprit.

He told the News it took several ladders and an electrician to give the farm a safety check – due to the lighting equipment set up – before they could get to work removing the cannabis plants and securing the roof.

Police believe an ‘enthusiastic amateur’ is behind the illegal crop – which has now been destroyed.

Plans to turn Old Kent Road retail park into a ‘destination’ BERMONDSEY

AN OLD Kent Road retail park is slated to become a new shopping, socialising and living ‘destination’ as part of plans to regenerate the area into London’s latest town centre.

Cantium retail park, currently the site of B&Q, Pets at Home, and Halfords, sits on the possible Bakerloo line extension route.

The site has been a business park since 1992 and has no historic buildings, having been heavily bombed during World War Two. The draft designs include 1,200 new homes – with the ‘aim’ of 35 per cent ‘affordable’ - 8,750 square-feet of retail space, 470 new full-time jobs, a new park and square, and shops, cafes and restaurants.

Developers are also hoping to house a leading creative, cultural or educational institution in one of the commercial units.

Two blocks of flats – potentially between 36 and 48 storeys – will be the highest buildings in the scheme, overlooking the Old Kent Road.

Developers say they are also in discussions with retail Pets at Home and Halfords about staying on the site.

Any planning developments on the Old Kent Road fall under Southwark Council’s Area Action Plan for the area, which outline the type and scale of development it wants to see in the next 20 years.

The existing car park would be built over, with only designated disabled spaces provided.

A spokesperson for Galliard Homes and Aviva Investors told the News: “The exhibition represents some of our initial ideas for the Cantium site and is part of a series of meetings we are holding with members of the local community.

“Our plans for the site will continue to be informed by the views of local residents and our on-going dialogue with Southwark council.

“We aim to present a refined, more detailed, vision for Cantium later in the spring.”

POLICE HAVE renewed their appeal to find 47-year-old missing man Phil Nicol, who was last seen nearly a month ago.

Last week, Mr Nicol’s long-term partner, Marc Bates, who shares a home with the former charity worker in Peckham, told the News: “I want Phil to know that I want him to come home, he has nothing to be worried about or ashamed of, and he hasn’t let me or his friends down.

“He is greatly loved and greatly missed. Nothing is the same without him.”

Mr Nicol has not made contact with family and friends since leaving home on Thursday, March 1 to go job hunting.

CCTV footage shows him visiting the O2 Centre on Finchley Road in north-west London just before 10am on Saturday, March 3.

Southwark police are particularly keen for help from anyone in Fortune Green Lane, near Finchley Road, and the surrounding areas, to check their own CCTV to see if Phil was recorded.

Developer Westminster Assets is requesting permission to demolish the Old Leprechaun pub and replace the building with a five storey block with nine flats band a bike shed at 83 New Church Road.

officially classed as ‘metropolitan open land’ and the woodland next to it will soon to form part of a longplanned New Church Road wildlife site.

THE MAYOR of London visited Bermondsey to launch Southwark Labour group’s manifesto ahead of the local elections on May 3.

Sadiq Khan met with traders, politicians and residents at the Blue market place on Saturday to officially launch the campaign.

Southwark Labour’s ‘evolutionary’ 2018 manifesto includes a free annual theatre trip for all primary-aged children, a dedicated construction company to build the borough’s future council homes, and further campaigning for a tube station at Bricklayers Arms.

Speaking to the News, Southwark Labour group leader Peter John said what really excited him was seeing full employment in the borough in the next four years, and creating a Southwark Construction Company to build muchneeded council homes and give people in the borough skills and qualifications.

“I really like the idea of the construction company and really getting some of those professional qualifications in-house and making sure it’s local and underrepresented groups that are getting those opportunities,” he said.

“Full employment is something I’m really, really keen on and I’d like to see us deliver in the next four years,” he added.

“The turnaround I’ve seen in employment numbers in Southwark in the last eight years is 10 per cent more people in work – that’s 45,000 jobs – and that’s Southwark residents which is really good news as it’s 76 per cent of the population.”

be done differently to avoid this happening again if Labour were reelected, Cllr John admitted it had been a more difficult process than expected.

“Obviously we would not have said we could build 1,500 by 2018 if we didn’t think we would get there but it’s been a slower and harder process than we had imagined back in 2014,” he said.

“Part of that is that it takes much longer to talk to residents about new builds; they want to be involved in the design and who’s going to be living there quite

rightly.

“And there has been some resistance so some schemes that we thought would be delivered we’ve had to remove from the programme so it has taken longer.

“We are up and running now and I’m as confident as I can be that we can deliver.”

Cllr John said that this year’s Labour manifesto was “evolutionary rather than revolutionary” in comparison to the last two elections which focused on free school meals in 2010 and free swim and gym for residents in 2014.

Southwark Labour also proposes to make sure 50 per cent of all housing built on council land will be let at council rents, and that EU citizens are made to feel safe and welcome in the borough throughout Brexit and in the future.

It has also opened talks with Meadow Residential LLP, the current owner of Dulwich Hamlet FC’s Champion Hill site, and will be making an offer in writing to them for the site to build council housing and secure the future of the club.

Rocket simulates MRI scan for kids

A ROCKET-shaped MRI simulator is being used at Evelina London Children’s Hospital in a UK first to help children overcome their fears about having a real scan.

An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan produces detailed images of inside the body. These are then used to help diagnose conditions, plan treatments and assess how effective previous treatment has been.

Although a painless procedure, patients are required to lie absolutely still in a confined space for a period of time, which can range from between 20 to 90 minutes.

Last year around 3,000 children had an MRI scan at Evelina London, with around 2,500 of these young patients requiring a general anaesthetic.

Some children require an anaesthetic for a number of reasons including their age, if

they experience anxiety about lying in the machine, or if a clinical condition prevents them from keeping still or understanding why they need to keep still during the scan.

Thanks to the new equipment, known as the Playful MRI Simulator, and with the help of play specialists preparing children beforehand, there has been a notable reduction in the amount of young patients needing a general anaesthetic.

It can mimic the loud sounds of a real scan and has the same size ‘tunnel’ – which the child lies inside – as a real MRI machine. Aimed at children up to tenyears-old, the simulator has helped nineteen young patients avoid having an anaesthetic within the first month of being used. The Playful MRI Simulator, which was developed by DOmed Medical Engineering Design in France, was purchased by the friends and family of Lord Stanley Fink, President of Evelina London, as a special donation to mark his 60th birthday.

Plans to mark terror attack anniversaries are revealed

PLANS TO mark the anniversaries of last year’s terrorist attacks in the capital, including London Bridge, have been revealed.

The public will be able to pay their respects at a 3D installation of #LondonUnited, which will be located at City Hall.

The space opened on the anniversary of the first attack in Westminster on Thursday, March 22, and will remain open to the public until the anniversary of the Finsbury Park attack on June 19.

The phrase will also be projected on to the Houses of Parliament, London Bridge, Finsbury Park Mosque and Parsons Green Tube station on the anniversaries of the attacks.

The public will be able to sign a

digital book of hope, and share messages using the hashtag #LondonUnited on social media, which will then be projected onto a map of London.

Councillor Peter John, leader of Southwark Council, said: “The attacks in London Bridge and Borough on June 3 last year left a lasting impact on the people of Southwark, and we will be remembering all those who lost their lives and were harmed by the attacks on that date locally.

“But the horrific events of last spring and summer were not an attack on London Bridge or Westminster or any other one place, but an attack on our great city, and the London way of life.

“We stood united then in the face of terror, and it is right that we do so again, both to remember everyone who was harmed last year, and to also look forward with confidence as one city, strong and united.”

Older buildings to be retained as history ‘brought back to life’

THE TEAM behind the £500million Bermondsey Masterplan have revealed how they hope their redevelopment of the area will see the historic Peek Frean biscuit factory hark back to its old days.

Grosvenor’s plans for the factory and surrounding area, drawn up by Kohn Peterson Fox Associates’ (KPF), are expected to provide up to 1,343 purpose-built rental homes, almost 2,500 jobs, and office, retail, leisure, and new public space.

Some of the buildings constructed in the ‘60s as additions to the biscuit factory, which sits off Drummond and Clements Road, are expected to be demolished as part of the plans, however all of the older factory buildings will be retained.

Fergus Evans, a senior development manager at Grosvenor, said the team hoped to “protect and celebrate” the heritage of the area, and that they understood how important it was to residents.

“Since acquiring the site in 2013 and engaging with the local residents we’ve got to know how crucial the local heritage is,” he told the News.

“I think we need to protect and celebrate it through our plans so that informed our design thinking and other strands of what we are doing – but a big thing KPF brought to us was the retention of the big warehouse building.

“While it’s not one of the oldest buildings onsite, it’s quite synonymous with the history and industrial character of the biscuit factory and it’s where they used to package the biscuits until they closed.

“That’s the biggest thing we are doing in terms of physical design, but we are trying to protect the heritage through all aspects of our design.

“Effectively, all of the old buildings in the car park around the gym and café will stay, it’s really the ‘60s/’70s additions that will make way.”

The site, which is currently fenced off, will become publicly accessible 24 hours a day, and two new pathways will be opened up underneath the railway arches, linking it to the Blue.

the industrial character of the site.

Architect Leif Lomo, from KPF, said the idea was to peel back the layers of the newer factory buildings to reveal some of the older buildings which are no longer as visible, and to open up the site to the public.

Building F – the warehouse building – will be retained but the lift tower will be removed and the façade will be kept while residential units and office space will be built on the upper floors, as well as an open and flexible ground floor which will host a mix of uses.

“We found that the site had been damaged after the war, and we felt there probably are layers of history that aren’t particularly evident any longer,” said Leif.

“It’s about excavation and seeing how we can bring these things back to life and reminding people what it was and what it could be.

“For example, we intend to use castings of the biscuits or the tins used to make the biscuits to actually make the façade of one of the buildings.”

The plans will open up a direct route through Keeton’s Road and the biscuit factory site, making it accessible to the public and mimicking how it used to be.

There will also be a walkway running parallel to the viaducts with a view of the Shard in the distance which will is proposed to be named Shard Walk.

“We’ve also tried to mirror some of the public spaces from what was there originally, as shown on a map from the 50s,” Fergus added. “We propose to name the square off Clements Road Salters Square [in honour of Alfred and Ada Salter who did much to beautify the area].”

Important references, people and places from Bermondsey’s history are expected to inform the naming of different streets and spaces, and the community would be involved in the process.

The current Compass School in Drummond Road would be demolished and moved into a purpose-built 600place school elsewhere on the same site, but closer to Bermondsey station, if the plans go ahead.

Buildings will range in height from four to 28 storeys and flats would range in size from studios to three bedrooms.

Grosvenor is proposing to provide 27.5 per cent of homes at discount market rent for people living and working in Bermondsey and across Southwark.

Graduates raise over £6k for Sense

SOUTHWARK: Graduates from RBS have raised over £6,000 for the disability charity Sense.

Forty graduates took over four Sense shops in Walworth, Peckham Rye, Holloway and Streatham late last year. They competed against each other to make as much money as possible, leading them to raise £6,905.

For five weeks, they were responsible for generating stock, arranging its delivery and organising fundraising activities.

Hugh Vermont, a graduate on the scheme, who participated in the challenge, said: “It was greatly fulfilling to understand what our fundraising efforts would achieve for Sense going forward.”

A BERMONDSEY community group is looking for people to take part in a project to commemorate 100 years since the First World War ended - and the area’s soldiers who never returned.

Avondale Community Events, based at the Avondale Square estate on the Old Kent Road, is hoping to make 345 pieces of art or craftwork to mark the centenary of the end of the Great War. The names of 344 Southwark soldiers who did not return from the war are commemorated on a stone wall at Southwark Cathedral.

But, as ACE chair Ann Duffy explains, there could be other unknown soldiers from Southwark who gave their lives, as well as people working behind the scenes who we should give thanks to.

“We wanted to mark the centenary of the end of WWI and we didn’t want to do a little tea party, we wanted to make it bigger than that,” said the 52-year-old, who has lived on the estate for more than 30 years.

“We thought we could do something individual for each soldier we know didn’t return as well as a 345th piece which will represent the unknown soldiers and also the unknown people doing things behind the scenes for us.

“What we are doing is involving as much of the community as we can; we want to get as much donated as we can such as artwork, arts and crafts, poetry, or a photograph, but

everything has to have a poppy incorporated into it.”

Ann said the group planned to run workshops in June to make some of the pieces which will then be sold at the Blue Market and various events in August to raise money for the Royal British Legion, Chelsea Pensioners, and potentially other charities such as War Child.

An auction may also be held to sell off any bigger pieces donated.

Roads go Double Dutch CRYSTAL PALACE

THE FIRST ‘Double Dutchstyle’ cyclist and pedestrian-friendly roundabouts in the UK have been introduced in Crystal Palace.

The junctions at Crystal Palace Parade have had two consecutive roundabouts between Fountain Drive and Sydenham Hill for many years, but they lacked facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

The new Dutch design will enable

cyclists and pedestrians to pass through the junctions while remaining completely separated from motorists.

The scheme was funded by TfL and constructed by Conway Aecom, on behalf of Southwark Council.

Councillor Ian Wingfield, Southwark’s cabinet member for environment and the public realm, visited the roundabouts, which are due for final completion in April.

He said: “We hope it will help cyclists and pedestrians feel much safer, whilst ensuring minimal delay

to buses and other traffic.”

The junctions that these roundabouts connect provide key pedestrian and cycle access to nearby train stations, schools and Crystal Palace Park and National Sports Centre.

Ben Plowden, TfL’s Director of Project & Programme Sponsorship, said: “We’re really pleased to see that our funding has helped bring this new design from the Netherlands to Southwark, which will make walking and cycling in Crystal Palace safer and easier.”

PLANS TO build a segregated cycle superhighway through Southwark have received strong support from the public, Transport for London has announced - in spite of concerns over the infamous Jamaica Road traffic problems.

The proposals for Cycle Superhighway 4, which will pass through Tooley Street and Jamaica Road, were backed by 83 per cent of the public after more than 3,000 people responded to a consultation, it has been revealed.

The planned transformation of the A200 would create a 2.5-mile segregated cycle link between Tower Bridge and Greenwich, running through Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and Deptford.

It also includes plans for a redesign of Rotherhithe Roundabout, five new signalcontrolled pedestrian crossings, and upgrades to more than 20 existing pedestrian crossings.

Sections of the route along Tooley Street and Jamaica Road are said to be among the top one per cent of areas for cycle demand in London, while the CS4 route as a whole is in the top five per cent, according to TfL. London’s Walking and Cycling

Commissioner Will Norman said: “I’m delighted that our plans to improve cycling facilities in southeast London have received such overwhelming support.

“We know that this is an area with huge potential and these results show what a great demand there is for a safe, segregated route.”

Matt Winfield, London director at walking and cycling charity Sustrans, said: “A fully protected cycle route in southeast London will be a huge step forward in tackling congestion and cleaning the air.

“Londoners are starting to feel the benefit of their capital’s new cycle routes, which is good news for everyone.”

The Jamaica Road approach to the tunnel has been dubbed the slowest stretch of road in London, and locals have voiced concerns over the impact of a cycle lane along it.

Anood Al-Samerai, leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrats and a councillor for the area of the proposed route, added: “There are a number of positive proposals in the plans, such as changing the roundabout layout and new pedestrian crossings.

“However improvements are needed, particularly at the West Lane junction; it's the opportunity to reduce congestion.

“These need to be considered as part of a larger and more holistic approach – one

In addition to CS4, TfL is working with Southwark Council on a potential new

cycle route between Rotherhithe and Peckham and has just announced public support for a new pedestrian and cycling bridge connecting Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf. CS4 will connect with Quietway 14 via the proposed segregated cycle lane on Tanner Street.

This Quietway would link the NorthSouth Cycle Superhighway with the

proposed Cycle Superhighway 4.

Plans for the section on Lower Road, which will incorporate the regeneration planned for Canada Water, will be consulted on at a later date.

TfL said it would now work with Southwark, Lewisham and Greenwich councils “to take the plans forward”.

Man dies after plunge from Rotherhithe block

ROTHERHITHE A man has died after plunging from a tower block.

The man, in his early 50s, was found outside Tissington Court with critical injuries after an "apparent fall from height" on Tuesday, March 20.

Officers were called to the scene in Rotherhithe New Road at 7.54pm. London Ambulance Service attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Next of kin have been informed.

The death is being treated as unexplained and there have been no arrests.

Enquiries continue and a report will be compiled for the coroner.

“With our regeneration plans looking to bring more homes, retail, leisure and culture facilities to the area, we welcome the new crossing that will help bring people across the Thames and into our borough, as well as helping our residents get better, easier access to jobs and opportunities across the water.”

While a navigable bridge remains TfL’s preference, no final decisions have been made on any specific aspects of design or location.

TfL hopes to be in a position to hold a second consultation on the designs for the crossing later in 2018.

This would allow local residents, visitors and commuters to comment on the proposed designs before they are completed and submitted as part of a consents application in 2019.

Anood Al-Samerai, leader of Southwark Liberal Democrats, said: “The decade-long campaign that we and others have fought to get the bridge built has clearly captured the public imagination.

“The bridge will form a key part of the green transport infrastructure that Southwark needs, keep the city moving and in a way that’s great for air quality, health, and the environment.

“We hope the process to decide on the best design for the bridge is swift as well as open, and that we can have the bridge and all the benefits it will bring sooner rather than later.”

Youngsters can train at Den BERMONDSEY

ASPIRING YOUNG footballers are being urged to sign up to The Big Match Kidz - and get the chance to train at The Den.

The event will be held before the annual Big Match which raises money for Action for Children and The Brain Tumour Charity.

Kicking off at 11.30am on Saturday, May 26, the two-hour session will see children aged between five and fifteen take part in a free coaching session run by Global Premier Soccer, which partners with Valencia FC. There will be ex professional footballers offering advice and tips around the groups, and football freestyler Colin Nell will be on hand to wow the crowd with his skills.

To take part, children just need to fill in

an application form and raise a minimum sponsorship of £50 which will go directly to the two charities. All children will receive a goody bag and medal to take away.

Following the children’s event, The Big Match will kick off at 2.30pm and will see teams made up of public players, celebrities and ex pros battle it out for the prestigious TBM shield. The day will

rounded off with the glitzy Extra Time event. The Big Match, now in its seventh year, was founded by Neil Humphries after he lost his father to a brain tumour.

The events will be held at Millwall FC’s stadium The Den at SE16 3LN, with gates opening at 11am.

EVERE WEATHER arrived at the end of February bringing snow and freezing temperatures - just before the meteorological start of spring on 1st March.

This is not the exact beginning of spring - but a way the Met Office uses to divide the seasons into four sections each comprising three months (to make analyses of the weather and data collection easier).

Freezing conditions lasted a week before a slow thaw- then March temperatures lifted; it began to warm up and there were promising signs of new growth - before the return of north easterly winds and snow showers; always a possibility any time until May. There are signs that plants and spring blossom have been damaged by the bitterly cold winds – for example Magnolia stellata flowers suffered some wilting as did new leaves on roses.

Most trees and shrubs will recover remove any dead leaves /flowers being careful not to disrupt new growth or cut into old wood.

Start top dressing plants using wellrotted manure or leaf mould – this also helps improve soil condition. Garden centres will have a range of products (look for organic) but this can be expensive; keeping a well managed compost heap/ bin in the garden or allotment is the best way to ensure a supply of nutrient filled material for use through the year.

Planning for the vegetable plot should be well underway; the first sowings of beetroot and radishes can be started (under cover if the weather remains cold). These can also be grown in containers and window boxes to get an early supply of fresh salad veg. Planting out the first early seed potatoes is likely to be delayed as the ground has not warmed up sufficiently and remains wet.

Crocus and daffodils are providing colour in the garden - along with Forsythia, displaying its unmistakable haze of bright yellow. The shy, shade loving Helleborus atrorubens sports unusual flowers – deep purple outside and green on the inside. Camellia japonica (pictured) is spectacular; specimens in sheltered areas managed to keep their extravagant, cheerful pink blooms through the cold spells.

With the spring equinox now passed (20th March) day light hours are longer than night time hours. The arrival of British Summer Time has brought lighter evenings and a sense that spring is here; the growing season is underway - and workload in the garden will suddenly increase.

Rapid firefighters

I WOULD like to say a massive thank you to the London Fire Brigade.

Got home last night 20/03/18 to find my flat filled with smoke and no obvious fire on scene. Called the LFB and their response was amazing. Got to me within five minutes and quickly located the source.

A workman had been using a blow torch on the main balcony and the heat had set the insulation between the walls alight. Thank you guys.

Will Simon’s vision for Blue Market work?

I READ that Simon Hughes has always supported the Blue Market.

However during his time as MP, I think he will agree that the Blue shopping centre and market went downhill.

Let's analyse his suggestions in last week’s letters page: 1. Vacant shops are unoccupied for a reason, either traders found it impossible to make a profit, or in the case of Santander and Barclays, internet banking and the cashless society have removed the need for branches.

Letting empty premises at cheaper rents still does not attract long term business, the Santander shop is just an extension of the 'charity shop' formula, which is already catered for.

2. The Maltby Street and Spa Terminus markets (with the help of Southwark Council) are hugely successful, they cater for the new influx of property owners to the area, a different clientele to those that use the 'Blue'.

Visit those areas and see people queuing up to pay' west end 'prices, for goods, prices that people who use the Blue would never pay, £3 jam doughnuts anyone?

3.The idea that a Disneyworld 'Cockney' market as a part of the solution is a step back in time, unless Simon is thinking of donning a Pearly

King costume and selling jellied eels and hot chestnuts, (Mary Poppins Dick Van Dyke springs to mind).

All employees of the Blue BID are keen to promote regular music events, etc, which do attract crowds but will not solve the problems of the Blue.

The Blue is suffering the same fate as high streets all over the country as internet shopping and nearby shopping centres like the ever expanding Canada Water, become more and more popular.

Free trip available for WWII veterans

IT'S THE Royal British Legion's belief that every World War Two veteran should have the chance to revisit the battlefield on which they served.

Thanks to new LIBOR funding from HM Treasury, we are now able to offer a fully funded trip to anyone who served in our Armed Forces during World War Two. However, as there is no unified record of World War Two veterans that are alive today, I am reaching out to you and your readers in the hope that you can help us spread the word.

The trips will take place between Spring and Autumn this year and a family member and a carer will also be able to go along and share this pilgrimage of Remembrance with them.

Get tough on criminals SO THE horror in knife crime in Britain continues unabated into 2018.

There is a growing fear of lawlessness on our streets and a troubling feeling that the police, obsessed with trendy causes such as internet hate crime and historical sex abuse are giving up control. A fact borne out that a police force is now interviewing young offenders at their homes rather than taking them into custody, stating that officers should treat under 17s as victims rather than criminals and avoid locking them up where possible.

Metropolitan Police officers have also reportedly been told to drop investigations into crimes such as public order offences and minor assaults, where there is no security camera footage available.

Meanwhile inmates are getting phones and basic computers in their cells to help them keep in touch with their families. Being soft on young criminals is not the answer.

The trouble in this country is that most of our prisons are like a holiday for some criminals, offering free bed and board for a couple of months.

Constant meetings, marches and campaigners seem to have had no effect on today’s youngsters. Perhaps it’s time to change tack, dish out more meaningful sentencing, say five to ten years, for the unlawful carrying of a knife or gun. At least when these young thugs are incarcerated the rest of us will be a lot safer.

New runway a boost for small business

IN RESPONSE to the Transport Select Committee’s Airports National Policy Statement (NPS) report.

A new runway at Heathrow is an opportunity to give a great boost to British business, connecting ambitious small firms to new markets. Additional airport capacity is clearly in the longterm national interest of the UK. The Federation of Small Businesses’ urge politicians across the political spectrum to ensure shovels are in the ground as soon as possible – it’s in the best interest of the UK economy, small businesses and the jobs they provide.

It’s essential small firms are given the opportunity to play a major part in the huge procurement exercise to build both the runway and associated works and that promises for increased regional connectivity are delivered following a new runway being built.

There must also be new routes overseas, boosting freight exports and connecting our world-beating businesses to new destinations, especially as we expect small firms to look to new markets post-Brexit.

Capital Challenge

ROYAL MENCAP Society, the learning disability charity, has launched the ‘Capital Challenge’ walking events in order to raise vital funds for people with a learning disability whilst walking the famous Capital Ring Walk created by ramblers in the 1990swith a combined distance of approximately 30 km.

Starting on May 5th, the new series of four walking events will take place around the circumference of London The route includes urban areas, green spaces and heritage parks including The Great North Wood, Wimbledon, Richmond Park, the Grand Union Canal, Welsh Harp and Finsbury Park Each of the four walking events will be held on a different date over the coming months. The challenge kicks off with the first event held in North London: Hendon to the Royal Albert Docks on May 5th. The event in the East: Royal Albert Docks to Crystal Palace will take place on the 26th of May, followed by the South: Crystal Palace to Richmond on the 9th of June.

The final event in the West of the City: Richmond to Hendon, takes place on the 7th of July.

Participants can sign up to any of the four walks – North, East, South or West for just £15 for each walk or take on all 4 challenges and complete the loop for just £40.

A century of croquet in Dulwich

IN 1912 Scot reached the South Pole, the republic of China was proclaimed, and the Titanic sank.

The same year, one of the UK’s leading croquet clubs was founded on Dulwich’s Burbage Road by enthusiasts of the then relatively new sport.

Paul Newton, club secretary, tells the News: “When Dulwich Croquet Club was founded, the game was about 60 years old, with the first croquet club formed in Worthing in 1865.

“In the mid-19th century croquet was hugely popular, but in 1874 disaster

struck when lawn tennis was introduced and immediately took over most of the lawns hitherto used for croquet.

“In 1877, the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club changed its name to the All England Club.

“A decade later it had discontinued croquet altogether, though later reserving one lawn for the game.

“Fortunately, after the lawn tennis revolution, croquet began a slow comeback having survived on private lawns and some clubs, but it very much remained a niche sport.”

In the USA, however, the ‘croquet craze’ saw the game sweep the nation – and receive something of a bad reputation.

Mr Newton says: “Retailers created a smaller-scale version of the sport, which could be played on rougher turf, using cheaper, lightweight equipment.

“Of the only two surviving photos of Billy the Kid, one from 1878 shows him playing croquet with his gang

outside their hideout.

“By the 1890s the Boston clergy was even speaking out against the drinking, gambling and licentious behaviour associated with the game.”

Back in Britain, croquet’s fortunes returned and The United All England Croquet Association was formed in 1896, becoming The Croquet Association we know today in 1900.

There are now believed to be around 200 clubs with seven to eight thousand players in Britain.

Internationally, croquet is played in 40 countries.

Mr Newton says the misunderstood game is surprisingly active: “Croquet is a sport which is a delight to play and addictive for most of its devotees.

“If one mentions croquet to a nonplayer, the reflex response is invariably ‘It’s a vicious game, isn’t it’, followed by reference to the vicarage shrubbery.

“This image is fostered by cartoons in Punch magazine of yester-year, and the equally satirical flamingos and

hedgehogs in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland books.

“The answer is yes, it can be.

However, croquet is also a game of skill and tactical awareness where men and women of all ages can compete equally.”

The club plays and teaches both versions of the game, association croquet and golf croquet.

Mr Newton explains: “Association is a more cerebral game where a player takes their balls around on their own through a series of connected shots similar to snooker.

“With Golf Croquet, players play alternate strokes (singles or doubles) and can produce great accuracy of shot and extreme power.

“Hoop running is more dynamic, with specialist shots such as a jump or stop shot.”

The club is keen to shake off croquet’s upper crust image, saying the club is always looking for new members and beginners to try what he describes as a ‘surprisingly tactical and physically demanding game’ with free tuition.

He says: “The club has many internal tournaments and plays competitively against both other clubs in the south east croquet federation, and nationally.

“Playing standards range from beginners to world ranked players.

“One of the great things about the club is that top players are happy and committed to playing with new members.

“And, he adds, “we have a subsidised bar.”

RIANNA DEAN and Charlie Devlin both scored twice as Millwall Lionesses beat Oxford to maintain their unbeaten league run this season and keep up the pressure on Doncaster Belles at the top of the Super League 2 table.

Dean put her side 2-0 up before Kayleigh Hines beat Sarah Quantrill to pull a goal back. Chloe Chivers had the chance to level from the spot, but Quantrill pulled off a superb save.

And Devlin sealed the win late on with two goals in ten minutes. Dean paid tribute to manager Lee Burch and the coaches after the Lionesses showed no signs of rustiness despite more than four weeks without a game.

“All credit to our staff because during that month off we've had they put us through our paces in training, they worked us hard and kept us up to match standards,” Dean said. “For the first goal, I just saw the 'keeper off her line and didn't really think, I just hit it.

“Charlie also came up with a couple of great finishes when she came on. Amber [Gaylor] deserved credit for the second goal because she was the one putting the 'keeper off and the ball just dropped to me.

“Through [watching] Oxford, we realised that’s one of their weaknesses, so I think we took advantage of that and that's how we got our four goals.

“Oxford kept going through the whole game, but as soon as we got the third some of their heads dropped. So even though they kept coming for us, we still felt we had control.”

The Lionesses were in action against Tottenham on Wednesday night after News went to press.

A FORMER Fisher fighter turned to White Collar Boxing to rebuild his confidence – after a defeat in an amateur fight caused him to fall “into a spiral”.

Dylan Curran, from the Old Kent Road, will fight Rayhan Ahmed at York Hall in a sport in which men and women in professional jobs train for special events.

Curran, 19, who is half Irish, half Thai, has used the sport to “overcome fear” and “be proud of oneself win, lose or draw”.

“I have fought for Fisher ABC since thirteen years of age and I have always dreamt of fighting in this historic venue,” Curran explained.

“Unfortunately I suffered my first defeat on a November 2015 Fisher ABC Show which broke my confidence, then a broken bone in my hand broke my dreams.

“I recovered from surgery and won my last bout at the Troxy Theatre which has reinstilled my confidence in my abilities in and out the ring.

“Having met, trained and sparred with my opponent, I realised that White Collar Boxing in particular provided people from different backgrounds with the amazing opportunity to box in front of daunting crowds to overcome fear, gain exposure or whatever the cause, and to be proud of oneself win, lose or draw.

“My first loss on the November 2015 Fisher ABC show honestly killed my insides. Despite all the hard nights I had spent in the gym, I fell into a spiral for eighteen months. My opponent has expressed a similar reason to me for turning to White Collar, for a confidence boost after not competing in a while and for a test of will.

“Coach Terry Longmore has trained me, got me on the show and in the best shape of my life.”

The fight will take place at York Hall on Thursday, March 29 on the Boxstar Promotions White Collar event for the superfeatherweight title.

A FORMER World Champion swimmer is aiming to “support and develop” potential Olympic and Paralympic athletes in Southwark.

Canadian Anne Polinario, who won nine Paralympic medals, eight World Championship medals and two Commonwealth medals in her career, has co-founded Minimal Splash which provides swimming lessons out of The

Downside Fisher Youth Club.

Polinario wants to draw on her experience to promote a healthy lifestyle to adults and children.

“Obviously you look at things like his record and what he has done previously. He’s been to the Olympics so I knew it would be tough,” Kongo said.

“My main challenge was the same as always, just go there and win round by round. He was going to come forward so it was just about out-boxing him.

“A fight like that was never going to be clean, you’re going to get into a clinch a lot of the time. I knew it would go like that, but that’s boxing, it happens.

“I would give that a six or seven out of ten, I know I could have popped my jab a little bit more, thrown more right hands as he was coming in. I’ll watch it back and learn from it.”

Kongo will take a short break before heading back into the gym and deciding on his next move.

He said: “We’re probably looking at the Southern Area but we don’t know what’s going on with that yet.

“I had about three months training for this fight. I was with Isaac [Chamberlain] for his camp in Ukraine, it was wicked out there.

“I’ll just have one week off and go back to the gym. I’m just going to keep ticking over.”

AFTER A month without a home game Fisher returned to St Paul’s last weekend and ensured the wait was worth it as they defeated FC Elmstead 2-0.

Dean Harrison’s side took the lead in front of the Dockers’ End when Rob Brown fired home from the penalty spot after an hour following a foul on Mathieu Ramsamy.

Fisher pressed for a second but had to be patient until the 96th minute to seal the win when Trey Small prodded in a loose ball.

Fisher are third in the SCEFL First Division table. Next up is an Easter double-header: a trip to Snodland Town on Good Friday followed by Crockenhill at St Paul’s on Monday April 2.

DULWICH HAMLET boss Gavin Rose isn’t worried that his side are up against clubs with much more money – because they’ve faced that challenge before.

Hamlet defeated Needham Market 30 last weekend for a third successive win that put them five points clear of Billericay in second place.

Billericay were taken over my multimillionaire businessman Glenn Tamplin in December 2016 and he shelled out big money to sign former England internationals Paul Konchesky and Jermaine Pennant, as well as ex-Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara.

This season, Tamplin flexed his

financial muscles again when he recruited Calum Butcher – who played 43 times for Millwall last season – on loan from Mansfield.

Billericay had the chance to close that points gap when they played Harrow Borough on Wednesday night, one of their four games in hand.

Hamlet have reached the Isthmian League Premier Division play-off final in each of the last two seasons, but are aiming to win the title and promotion outright this year.

“We’ve had the likes of Margate in our league, Maidstone as well who were well-backed,” Rose said.

“Probably every season there has been at least one club with a lot of money.

“We have remained competitive and we’ve always challenged. We’ve missed out before on the last day to go up, so we’re not a million miles away from these teams.

“We’re happy to go for the challenge and try to get promoted.”

They remain on course to do that after their latest win, Nyren Clunic bringing his tally for the club to 102 with a brace at Needham.

DOCKLANDS UNDER-8S were in the quarter-finals of cup competition last weekend against teams one and two leagues above them.

They first played Danson Sports 2, two leagues higher, who took 1-0 lead into half-time. Docklands dominated the second half creating numerous chances and getting a goal back through Ethan Maxwell, but their opponents ran out 4-1 winners.

Docks then played Dartford from the league above and started slow going a goal down. But they fought

back and goals from Maxwell, Tyler Andrews and Henry Toomey sealed an impressive win. Man of the match was Maxwell FISHER UNDER-7S were in Vase action last Sunday against Long Lane Lions and Dartford Blue. Fish had played Long Lane four times already this season with each game decided by the odd goal.

And the latest contest followed the same trend. The Long Lanes goalkeeper made a superb save from Anton Sinclair in the first half, before Sinclair went in goals for

Fisher and pulled off a magnificent second-half block.

Mason Mulholland then won the game with a brilliant long-range finish.

In the second game against Dartford Fish’s tails were up and Henry Tyler edged them in front before finding Sinclair who finished for 2-0.

After the break Mulholland curled a 20-yard free kick into the top corner before Tommy Pavey smashed home a sumptuous volley from a Mulholland corner to crown a 4-0 win. Man of the match was Mulholland whose hard work matched his undoubted natural talent.

FISHER UNDER-8S secured two dominant wins at home to Our Lady Youth on Sundau. Goals from Taylor Jones and Freddie Dunworth secured a 2-1 win in the first encounter, before they followed that up with a 1-0 victory secured after long-range Rylee Lonergan free-kick. It was the under-8s first double-winning Sunday of the season – and it was thoroughly deserved.

STANSFELD’S DISMAL run continued with another home defeat, this time against a well-organised Snodland team – their fourth loss in five games.

Stansfeld started brightly and had the better of the early exchanges with fit-again forward Ryan Hassan causing all sorts of problems down the right with his pace and skill.

In the 20th minute Hassan got to the byline and pulled the ball back to Billy Shinners whose first-time effort was well saved by the Snodland goalkeeper.

Five minutes later Stansfeld took a deserved lead through livewire Hassan, who raced onto a through-ball from Charlie Howard and he slotted past the advancing ‘keeper. Stansfeld continued to dominate and should have added to their one-goal lead but good ‘keeping and wasteful finishing denied them.

In the 39th minute Snodland were level through their top goalscorer Dave Sherwood who glanced home a header from a corner. But just two minutes before half-time Stansfeld regained the lead when a low cross from Hassan was bundled into the net by Shinners.

After the break Snodland’s stopper kept his side in the game with two smart saves

from Nathan Flaher and Hassan and then he watched his side go up the other end and equalise through Liam Wilkes in the 70th minute. Things got worse for Stansfeld when three minutes later Reece Giles put Snodland in front for the first time.

Stansfeld reacted to the setback to put Snodland under pressure and in the 80th minute it paid off, a deep cross from Frankie Beale on the left and Shinners headed into the top corner.

However, within a minute, all Stansfeld’s hard work was undone when Snodland’s Sherwood took advantage of a half-cleared header before firing into the bottom corner to pinch all three points for his side Stansfeld are thirteenth in the SCEFL First Division table.

Also last weekend, Stansfeld’s Reserves went down 4-0 away to table toppers Kennington.

The 3rd Team recorded an important win, 3-1 win against relegation battlers Orpington with goals from Charlie Herd, Sam McDonald and Matthew Codd.

MILLWALL CAN’T match Wimbledon’s Crazy Gang for training ground antics – but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any mischief at the club, with George Saville the latest to be pranked.

They don’t go as far as that Wimbledon squad that included Vinnie Jones and Dennis Wise, but Saville might have wondered why his new set of golf clubs had a secondhand feel when he got back from international duty this week.

Whereas Wimbledon no doubt veered towards bullying and in some cases criminality – John Fashanu takes delight in telling stories about locking players in car boots or forcing them to go two days without eating – Millwall’s players know where the line is.

There is no shortage of mischievousness, but Jed Wallace feels Millwall get the balance right, pointing out that the environment at some clubs and around the England squad can be too stifling and strict.

“It goes on here but not to that extent,” Wallace said when reminded of what Wimbledon used to get up to.

“George Saville, for example, is obsessed with his golf and obviously he has been away on international duty.

“He’s had his new golf clubs that he has been buzzing about for weeks delivered to the training ground. So I think Moro [Steve Morison] has taken one of the clubs all around the country, taking it for coffee with him.

This gold club that Sav is desperate to get his hands on has been doing a tour of Northampton [where Morison lives].

“That off-the-pitch banter does help.

Jordan [Archer] got a new Range Rover last year and I ‘accidentally’ dropped a bag of flour all over it. Next thing I know my car is getting egged, so you’ve got to be careful who you pick on. There are certain people who don’t get picked on because they then have a need to take it too far, i.e.

Moro.

“I speak to players at different clubs and it’s like they’re at school. It’s very strict and I don’t think that’s the way it should work.

“I think that’s part of the problem with the England set-up. They’re not allowed to have a bit of vanilla in their latte. I mean, you’re playing against Brazil, the reason you lose in a World Cup isn’t going to be because you’ve had a bit of shortbread on a Tuesday before playing on a Saturday. People

take football too seriously sometimes.

“Here it’s very refreshing to come in, roll your sleeves up and get on with it, and then go home and spend time with your family.

“We earned the right to have a few days off last week. One of the things I like about this club is that people can go away and do their own thing, but then when we’re in here we work hard. After Brentford we all went out and had a meal together and we have that camaraderie.

“We go to somewhere like Barnsley and roll our sleeves up, and come away with three points in the snow in Oakwell. That’s not easy. I say to my mates that when you play for Millwall you don’t feel the cold. You don’t feel

tackles, you just get on with it.”

Wallace credits that kind of atmosphere as part of the reason new players settle so well at the club.

Ben Marshall, who arrived on loan from Wolves in January, has cemented his place in the side, and his two goals have contributed to Millwall maintaining their current twelve-game unbeaten league run.

“It’s so easy to come into this changing room,” Wallace said.

“Nothing makes you feel more settled than when the boys go out and have a few beers and luckily that happened when Marshy arrived. It’s like when you start work in a new office. You never really feel like you know everyone and can relax around

everyone until you’ve been out away from the workplace. We do that here.

“It helps Marshy knew me and Sav. The manager doesn’t put pressure on players to play a certain way. It’s a case of if you work hard you can play how you want. You’ve seen that with Marshy.

“It’s a weird realisation, especially coming from somewhere like Wolves where they have possession all the time, that here you let the opposition have the ball. When we get it, then it’s fast. It is difficult to get used to but he’s hit the ground running.

[O’Brien] at Leeds and had that been last year we probably would have struggled. This season we lose someone like him and keep winning, which shows the strength in depth.”

Wallace turned 24 years old on Monday and arrived at the training ground with, he said, “forty quid’s worth of cakes after raiding the Krispy Kreme section at Tesco”. He spoke to the News at Calmont Road and reflected on how much he has packed into his life in the last two years, after first joining Millwall on loan in Neil Harris’ first season in charge.

Since then, he and his partner bought their first house as they prepare to welcome their first child, after getting used to the pitter-patter of little feet having also adopted a Vizsla puppy.

He believes it’s no coincidence footballers have kids when they are young.

“A footballer’s life is boring, there is a lot of time doing nothing because you’ve got to rest,” he said.

“My mates are still out getting p****d every weekend, I don’t even have to text them because I know they’ll be down the boozer.

“They’re still doing the same things they were doing at seventeen, and rightly so, they’re still at university and don’t know what they want to do.

“When you play football there is a lot of sitting on the sofa and resting.

I think that’s why a lot of footballers have kids early. When I’m 36 I’ll be on five pounds a year, so while I’ve got money in my pocket it’s a good time to do it.

“It’s been brilliant, I’ve loved every minute of it here. It’s all I could have asked for when I was sixteen or seventeen to be at a club like this, playing regularly. I should have been playing regularly in the Championship two years ago. Not doing as well at Wolves as I would have liked put me a year behind in my progress.

“I knew at seventeen or eighteen that at this age I would be affecting things in the Championship if not higher. The Championship is now where I feel I have found my level and I want to push on.

“The reality is we’re four points off the top six. That’s the good thing about the dressing room here, there are a lot of young players going to go on to do big things and some older players who have been there and done it.

“People like me, Sav and Mahlon [Romeo] want to push on and do well in our careers. There is a good mix and that’s why we have been doing well.”

SID NELSON scored his first goal in his 75th professional game – but his future at Millwall is uncertain with his contract ending this summer.

Millwall wasted numerous chances against Forest back in August

Friday, before they go to Ipswich Town the following Monday for a crucial Easter period.

They know maximum points will keep them right in the play-off mix with six games to go after these two fixtures.

However, despite having little to play for, Aitor Karanka’s Forest could be a tough nut to crack. They won’t go down or reach the play-offs but they are on a seven-game unbeaten run and haven’t conceded a goal in three. They haven’t scored in those games either, but showed how dangerous they can be by putting five past QPR at Loftus Road last month.

“We felt we were robbed up at The City Ground back in August, we had some horrendous luck in front of goal,” Harris said.

“It’s a different set of players, they’ve a different manager. I don’t think we’re talking about revenge for that result – we were robbed by the referee on the day.

“We look at this Easter weekend as a pivotal one in the calendar, it’s the same for clubs up and down the country.

We’ve got ourselves into a fantastic position and the international break gave us a chance for rest and recovery.

We got some extra work into players.

“Some players had the chance to go away and represent their countries and they will come back rejuvenated and proud of their achievements.

“The Den will be rocking on Friday, it’ll be a great atmosphere. We’re in the home stretch with eight games to go and we’re in a wonderful position where we can dream about what’s ahead of us.

“Myself and the group intend to embrace the challenge and that starts with Forest. They’re a side that’s transformed and hold many threats going forward as well as having kept three clean sheets on the bounce.

“We know it’s going to be a tough encounter, as every game seems to be at this level, but it’s certainly a game

where we will be looking to impose ourselves for the 90 minutes.”

Harris was hoping that the international players would return injury-free. Goalkeeper Jordan Archer was the last to arrive back after Scotland’s game in Hungary on Tuesday, but will have just one training session before the clash with Forest.

Aiden O’Brien could be involved over Easter for the first time since January.

Harris: ‘I can sympathise with Harry’s situation’

NEIL HARRIS says Harry Smith needs space to “find his way again” but hopes the striker will still have “a very good career” in football.

Smith, 22, announced last week he was taking a break from the game to deal with depression and a gambling addiction.

The club released a statement offering him their “absolute support”. Smith joined Millwall in the summer of 2016 from nonleague Folkestone Invicta and scored six goals in his first six senior competitive games.

He went on loan to Swindon earlier this season where he scored three times in nineteen games, but a knee injury limited him to just one under-23 fixture for the Lions in 2018.

Smith is out of contract this summer.

“Harry has had a really difficult period of time. Probably the whole time he’s been with the club I’ve had to work closely with

him,” Harris explained.

“He’s a smashing young man and he’s finding his way. The club is supporting him, I’m supporting him, his team-mates wish him well.

“Harry has to take his time to find his way again. In the meantime we are here for him. He needs his time with his family to progress as a young man and come back to the club when he is ready.

“He’ll have the support from me at the top of the club and all the things that we can offer him in a professional environment.

“I can sympathise with Harry’s situation, obviously having gone through an illness at a young age myself. There are taboo subjects that aren’t discussed in the pub, that aren’t understood in public “Harry took a route that he felt comfortable with. The club support him in that and it’s all about him refocusing

and developing as a young man. He’ll take advice and support and time.

“Hopefully he’ll have a long career in the game. In the short term he needs to find

his way again and long term he’ll hopefully score goals and have a very good career.”

On Twitter last Friday, Smith wrote: “I have made a decision to take some time away from football to seek some help in relation to depression and gambling issues which I've been battling for a number of years.

“Has not been an easy decision to make for me but has been made easier with the support of my close friends, agency, the club and most importantly my parents and the gaffer.

“Football is my life but I just feel especially the last 12 months I've not kicked on & it’s been tough having to deal with these issues while trying to perform to a high standard which ultimately I don't think I've done enough.

“For the first time in a long time I am starting to see a way forward.”

Nelson scored in Chesterfield’s 3-1 win over Notts County last weekend as Jack Lester’s Spireites boosted their survival hopes. They are three points from safety in League Two, though they have two games in hand on Grimsby.

Lions boss Neil Harris revealed the club have been in touch with Nelson’s agents, but the centre-back, 22, knows his chances with Millwall will again be limited next season.

“Sid’s done extremely well at Chesterfield, Jack has been really pleased with him,” Harris said. “His goal was a reward for him because his performance was outstanding. It was a big win for his loan club.

“He’s an excellent centre-half, a real Millwall centre-half and a winner. It’s probably been hard for him at times seeing his mates come through here and get regular chances.

The position he plays in has dictated that we have to be more patient with him in terms of his size and stature, and the way we play.

“Sid’s got a terrific future in the game. He was given a lot at this club at a young age and then had to find his way again. He’s in the thought process moving forward for us.

“He is out of contract in the summer. We’ve had various discussions with his advisers already and they will continue.

“Nowadays agents talk to clubs.

Sid’s one that I have always been very fond of and I like him as a player. That hasn’t changed. There are lots of considerations when you talk about renewing contracts from the club and player’s perspective.

“That’s not talking about financial terms because Sid isn’t thinking about that, someone like him will be thinking more of his opportunities to play football. There is a lot more development in him.

“I’ve been really pleased with how he’s focused this season after helping Newport escape from relegation last year.”

SHAUN WILLIAMS was snubbed for the latest Republic of Ireland squad and admitted: I don’t know what more I can do.

Williams, 31, was overlooked by Ireland boss Martin O’Neill for the international friendly against Turkey, which the side lost 1-0.

Williams could be forgiven for thinking his form this season might have merited a first-ever call-up, especially considering O’Neill is not exactly stocked with toplevel talent in midfield.

There was only one Premier League player involved, Burnley’s Jeff Hendrick.

Conor Hourihane of Aston Villa and Preston’s Alan Browne also started.

David Melyer, who hasn’t been a regular this season for a Hull side currently in eighteenth place in the Championship table – nineteen points behind Millwall – came off the bench. So did Alan Judge, who only returned from 20 months out injured last December, and who was a substitute in Brentford’s 1-0 defeat at The Den recently, when Williams played the full game. Three players from League One also travelled to Turkey.

Williams is keen to stress that he is not judging those in the squad. But he feels

“I was obviously disappointed not to be selected for the squad,” Williams said. “I don’t really know what more you have to do to get a bit of recognition.

“I know they have come to see Aiden [O’Brien] and I’ve played in most of the games this year. I’ve played in every game in this run we’re on at the minute so it is disappointing.

“You can’t pick it yourself but if I could I’d definitely have been in the squad.

“I’m not going to dis any player that’s in the squad, but where we are at the moment is a lot higher than a lot of people in the squad.

“It’s confusing and disappointing in terms of thinking of what you have to do to get into the squad. Obviously age may be a factor but if form is anything to go by I don’t see why I shouldn’t be involved.”

But ambitions are very different now.

“If you had offered this position back in

August I would have snapped your hand off,” Williams admitted. “I don’t see why we can’t go out and win two more games this weekend because the form and the confidence is there, everything is going for us at the minute. Long may it continue and hopefully we pick up on Friday where we left off.

“I would have been happy to just stay up, that would have been a great achievement.

But it’s an even greater achievement to be where we are now.

“The first game of the season there is always a bit of rustiness, but we dominated it and from then on we knew that this league wouldn’t be a problem for us.

“Forest are a big club and should be challenging for promotion, but we went up there and battered them and were unlucky not to win.

“The pressure kicks in now for a lot of teams, whereas we’re just striving to be better. Nothing is expected of us. We’ve got our underdog tag once again and we relish that. It’s been a great season.

“I’ve spoken to a lot of my friends over the last while and I said, ‘if we make the play-offs you can put money down that we’ll go up’.

“We know from the last two years how it’s done. At The Den no one is going to come and turn us over there. If we did finish sixth we would be at home first and then have every chance.

Williams revealed one person back home has extra interest in how the season pans out.

He explained: “I speak to people at home and everyone is saying we’re flying, with a couple of swear words I can’t use! A next-door neighbour who is a great friend of ours stuck a hundred quid on us to make the play-offs at 28/1. I’ll have to owe him a few drinks if we don’t do it.

“There have been teams before that have gone back-to-back promotions, Norwich and Southampton. I don’t think everyone would be happy if we went up but we would be over the moon.

“But, look, it’s eight games away and we can look forward to the challenge.”

And even if the miracle doesn’t happen this season, Williams believes the club is building towards something special. “The gaffer is getting more and more experience and he’s adding better players to improve us every window.

“I don’t see why we can’t challenge,” Williams said. “You’ve got to dream big and there is no bigger dream than the Premier League.”

JED WALLACE believes that only one manager in England has done a transformation job that compares to Neil Harris’ in the last three years – Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham.

It’s high praise from the winger for Harris, who set about the task of rebuilding the club in 2015 after relegation to League One. Seventeen of Millwall’s 23-man senior squad were signed by Harris, who led the club to promotion last season after a second successive playoff final appearance.

to Pochettino’s Spurs, who have developed a reputation under the Argentine as one of the most vibrant and enjoyable sides to watch in England.

With eight games left this season, Millwall have put themselves in a position to challenge for the play-offs ahead of the Easter double-header weekend.

“I was talking to one of my friends last weekend about this. You look back over the last three years in terms of who has done more with a squad in the whole country – maybe Pochettino has done more with Tottenham,” Wallace said.

“Looking through the leagues I don’t see a better managerial job and a better changing room that has achieved more. To get to two play-off finals after relegation, the FA Cup quarter-finals and now to be getting near the play-offs with the budget we’ve got and the group, I don’t see too many better jobs.

“We’ be confident playing anyone

over two legs. If we did get into the play-offs The Den is so hard for anyone to play at. We know we’re difficult to play against.

“The manager is the first one to say that Middlesbrough should be beating us three or four nil. The pressure is all on those teams.”

Wallace also revealed one of the motivations for the squad down the home stretch this campaign.

He said: “It’s amazing to think that on the last day of the season Aston Villa could need to win to get into the top two and we could need to win to get into the play-offs. What an atmosphere that would be.

“That’s what we’re striving to make happen. We want that last game of the season to be a massive atmosphere at The Den. We want it to be packed and when it is then anything can happen.”

Williams, 31, damaged knee ligaments last September before returning in December and eventually winning back his regular first-team place.

The midfielder triggered a contract extension in February when he made his fifteenth league start, which would have come a lot sooner had he avoided injury.

Millwall only offer one-year deals to players over 30 years of age, and Williams does not have another extension clause in his current deal.

He understands the club’s position, though he admitted it was a relief when he eventually secured an extra twelve months.

He said: “I was a little bit worried when I got injured. I didn’t know how long I would be out, I think that’s what spurred me on to focus on getting back fit quickly.

“It’s a nice bit of security with another year in the Championship and hopefully we can do another deal to extend it further.

“It keeps people on their toes because they can get comfortable if they have a long contract. You can see with Moro [Steve Morison], he’s still busting a gut every week to keep going. It’s an incentive and it’s about trying to get that security.

“It’s a big weight off our shoulders and the club’s shoulders that we’re doing so well and we have secured Championship football for next year.”
