THE PARTNER of a charity worker who has not been seen since he went job hunting three weeks ago has issued an emotional appeal for help in trying to find him.

Phil Nicol, 47, was last spotted on CCTV by police in north London on March 3.

Bringing repairs back in-house is a bold move

T

he plan to bring housing repairs back in-house is a bold move by the council, given the size of Southwark’s stock and the amount of repairs carried out each year.

The authority looks after the largest amount of council homes in London and says every year around 100,000 building repairs are requested and completed.

It confirmed last week that it would no longer outsource the work, saying contractors ‘often struggle to meet the council’s performance targets’.

Southwark’s deputy leader and cabinet member for housing, councillor Stephanie Cryan’s logic appeared clear-cut when she said: “We know we can more closely monitor our services when they are delivered by ourselves”.

Indeed given the volume of calls complaining about council housing repairs that we get in the newsroom there is little doubt that a huge amount of council residents could welcome the move.

According to last week’s cabinet papers, the full cost of bringing the housing repairs back in-house is still being worked out. Surely this is essential information needed to assess whether the move is correct?

So there are questions to be asked. How much will it cost to bring the services back in-house? How will the council ensure it can meet its own targets? Will it create new jobs in the borough, and if so, how many?

The News asked the council for extra detail just before deadline, so we hope to give our readers more information next week.

CAMBERWELL

A CAMBERWELL couple have turned their weekend hobby into an international jerk street food business - and are just about to expand to Dubai.

Although it was only founded eighteen months ago, Only Jerkin employs a team of ten across three locations across London.

Co-owners Luke Dawes and Jess Olsen, from Camberwell, were inspired to set up the street food business after experimenting in their kitchen at home.

Mr Dawes, whose father is from the Caribbean, says: “I love cooking with different flavours.

“I was playing around with my mum’s traditional jerk recipe when I came up with Only Jerkin’s famous dish - our jerk chicken nuggets triple dipped in a ginger beer batter.

“They went down so well with my girlfriend Jess and my friends that we continued developing different recipes.

“Eventually, we got to the point where we thought we’d give a street food business a go and see if others liked what we’d been cooking up.”

After their first stall at a market in Soho’s Rupert Street was such a success, the business continued to grow.

Initially the pair fitted the new enterprise around their hectic work schedules, before Luke left his job as a psychiatric nurse and Jess moved from working as a set designer to dedicate their time to Only Jerkin.

The duo can be found serving from their Only Jerkin bus at markets across London.

Although it was only founded eighteen months ago, Only Jerkin employs a team of ten across three locations across London and is about to expand to Dubai after receiving a promising franchise opportunity.

A BERMONDSEY woman suffering from skin cancer says her dying wish is to meet Ed Sheeran, after being given just months to live.

Barbara Morris, 65, was first diagnosed with malignant melanoma a few years ago after noticing a lump on her right leg, which doctors managed to cut out.

She put it to the back of her mind and focused on caring for her husband of 47 years David, who died of pancreatic cancer in September 2014, and her father, who had dementia and who died around the same time.

But just a few weeks ago doctors found that the cancer had spread to her right knee, left lung and lymph nodes, and the grandmother has now been diagnosed

with stage four metastatic melanoma and given just four to six months to live unless immunotherapy works.

Speaking to the News, Barbara said her dying wish was to meet Ed Sheeran, whose music has brought her comfort these last few years.

“I love his music; every song of his I’ve listened to has reminded me of something in my life,” she said.

“His music helps me so much; I think I would not be able to even fall asleep if I didn’t listen to it at night.

“If I’m in pain I just listen to his music

and I forget about the pain, whether it’s physically or mentally, thinking I’m not going to be here this time next year.

“Some days I feel so down and like I don’t care what happens and then I just put Ed Sheeran on and it lifts my spirits.”

Barbara, who has three grown-up daughters, said she tried contacting Ed via social media but turned to the News after having no success.

“I want to meet him in person – I just admire him so much and the way he is with people and his music,” she said.

Barbara said doctors believe her skin cancer was caused by her not being properly covered up and protected from the sun as a child.

“I’ve never really been out in the sun too much and haven’t ever been on a

sunbed,” she said.

“About five or six weeks ago I noticed a little lump on my right leg - it just looked as though I cut myself shaving and they [the doctors] said it was cancer so they cut it all out again and did a PET scan and found that it had spread to the front and back of my right knee, my lymph nodes and my left lung.

“They’ve said I’ve got four to six months to live but I’m trying this immunotherapy which has a 30 per cent chance of working.

“I won’t have radiotherapy or chemotherapy because I saw my husband go through that and it was the worst thing.”

The News is now attempting to contact Ed Sheeran’s agent.

Alongside housing repairs, other services to be carried out by council staff once again include customer services and IT. The council says it looks after the largest stock of social housing in London, and every year around 100,000 building repairs are requested and completed.

It says neither of its two contractors have managed to hit their targets, but did not provide full details of their performance when requested by the News.

Mears serves residents in north Southwark and Southwark Building

Services (SBS) covers the south of the borough. The council’s contract with SBS will expire on June 2, 2019.

Both companies rely on sub-contractors to complete £14.4 million’s worth of repairs each year.

According to last week’s cabinet meeting papers, the full cost of bringing the repairs back in-house is still being worked out.

The council was also unable to give further information on how much it expects to save each year, when asked by the News.

“Past experience in Southwark of service delivery by large external contractors has been variable and contractors often struggle to meet the council’s performance targets.

“We know we can more closely monitor our services when they are delivered by ourselves and this approach feeds into our objective of creating ‘One Council’ – where we always put residents at the heart of what we do.”

Women ‘self-identify’ as men at male-only swim session ‘Two normal women making a point’ over trans rights in changing rooms

TWO WOMEN swam at a menonly session at Dulwich Leisure Centre this week – one of them topless – to highlight proposed legal changes that could give people the right to ‘self-identify’ as male or female.

Amy Desir, 30, and Hannah (who asked to remain anonymous) are from the Man Friday campaigning group, which is organised on the online Mumsnet forum.

Last Friday they asked Dulwich Leisure Centre’s reception staff if they could join a male-only swim held at 7pm.

Although initially told they would be unable to join the session, the pair were able to use the men’s changing rooms and swim after saying they self-identified as male.

While Hannah wore bottoms and a Tshirt, Ms Desir swam bare-breasted.

groups and the wider public had not been consulted properly about the proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act, which could allow people to change their legal gender without providing any medical evidence.

The group have started a petition calling on a consultation focused on how to protect women and girls in women-only spaces, with six thousand signatures collected.

Describing herself as an ‘accidental activist’, Hannah told the News the

demonstration was “two normal women making a point in a bit of ridiculous way,” but that the subject was a serious one which needed more public awareness. She said: “A lot of companies and organisations have already made it their policy to allow people to selfidentify. “We are not looking to deny anyone their rights, or cause pain or distress, but we would like to see a proper consultation and for people to understand how these changes will affect all of us.

“A lot of women do not want to get

changed next to a man with a penis.

“What about survivors of abuse, or women who can’t for cultural reasons, and children?”

She says they deliberately picked a male-only session as they knew their appearance would cause surprise but was unlikely to leave anyone distressed, saying the fellow swimmers responded “with the best of British upper lip.”

Trans rights campaigners say trans people are highly likely to suffer discrimination and abuse.

Bernard Reed, a trustee of the Gender Identity Research and Education Society said: “Simplifying the current unduly onerous and degrading process of obtaining a gender recognition certificate, and making it as straightforward as it already is to change the driving licence and passport, as well as HMRC and health records, will just make life easier for trans people.

“At least nine other countries, including the Republic of Ireland and Argentina, have already done this, without adverse consequence. It is time for the UK to

catch up.”

Everyone Active, which runs the leisure centre, said it was reviewing guidelines and welcomed suggestions from the public.

Mark Basker, Everyone Active’s contract manager, said: “Everyone Active currently follows the guidelines provided by Swim England on engaging trans people in swimming.

“As such, these individuals were welcome to take part in our men-only swimming sessions at Dulwich Leisure Centre on Friday, March 16.

“Prior to these guidelines being published, Everyone Active had also updated its swimwear policy to allow a wider variety of garments to be worn in the pool, with the aim of making swimming a more inclusive activity.

“We are currently in the process of reviewing the guidelines given by Swim England, and are in direct discussions with them to determine how we can best adapt our practices to ensure all customers feel safe and comfortable when using the centre.”

Peckham man’s emotional plea to partner who went missing 3 weeks ago EXCLUSIVE

THE PARTNER of a man who has been missing for three weeks is appealing for help finding the charity worker who has dedicated his life to helping LGBT causes.

Mr Nicol, aged 47, was last seen by his long-term partner, Marc Bates, on Thursday, March 1 at home in Peckham.

Mr Bates described him as “a warm, caring, happy and thoughtful person, a fierce friend, charity champion and dog lover”, and said he was greatly missed.

He told the News: “I want Phil to know that I want him to come home, he has nothing to be worried about or ashamed of, and he hasn’t let me or his friends down.

“He is greatly loved and greatly missed. Nothing is the same without him.

Mr Bates said that his Mr Nicol left home at 1.30pm on March 1 to research job opportunities in the charity sector, where he was keen to find a new role after a period working for his partner’s business.

He has not been in touch with family or friends since, and they are increasingly concerned for his welfare.

Mr Nicol used to work as head of fundraising at Diversity Role Models, a charity that seeks to promote diversity and acceptance, particularly around sexuality and gender in schools.

Beforehand he worked as a volunteer and co-chair of the Lesbian and Gay Switchboard, a helpline for the LGBT community and people struggling with their sexuality, where he met his partner in 2006.

The Oxford graduate is also a Trustee of VacProj, a small charity that supports families in challenging circumstances, and helps to give underprivileged children an activitybased holiday in the UK. Police say CCTV footage shows Mr Nicol visiting the O2 Centre in Finchley Road, NW3, on Saturday, March 3.

Officers from Southwark’s missing persons unit are appealing for anyone who has seen Mr Nicol in the last three weeks to come forward.

300 new homes plan for Ilderton Road site

PLANS HAVE been drawn up to turn a Bermondsey truck dealer site into more than 300 new homes.

Argon Capital proposes to build 330 homes on the current RS Joyner & Sons site in Ilderton Road.

If plans are given the go ahead, the development would include a mix of both flats and houses in a number of buildings, 35 per cent of which would

be affordable.

There would also be a 1,829sqm retail unit on the ground floor of the highest building.

The developer proposes to build two blocks to twelve storeys, including ground floor, one building would be seven storeys, and the tallest would be 25 storeys with a retail unit at ground level.

There would also be a series of houses built on the site at 76-163 Ilderton Road if plans are approved once submitted to the council.

New stalls for The Blue Market

Bermondsey: The Blue Market has been filled with rows of new stalls.

Several new vintage stalls have arrived at the market on Saturdays, thanks to the efforts of local businessman Paul Woods, who recently made a large donation of stock to Bermondsey Uprising community pop-up shop.

The Blue Bermondsey Business Improvement District (BID) has funded new gazebos, which can be rented by stallholders, and there is room to add more stallholders.

‘Help us to raise £23k for school equipment’

A BERMONDSEY special school is trying to raise £23,000 to buy additional playground and library equipment for its new home.

Cherry Garden School, a special school in Bermondsey for children aged two to eleven, will be moving into a purpose-built building in Peckham in September.

The school has been working with Southwark Council and Hawkins Brown Architects for more than three years to ensure the new building meets the complex needs of its pupils.

The council has funded the majority of the bespoke equipment needed for pupils at the school, including a hydro pool, sensory room, and soft play rooms, but Cherry Gardens is fundraising for some additional items on top of this.

This includes £5,123 for chimes and £7,160 for windpipes for the playground, as well as £11,000 for the school library.

Teresa Neary, headteacher of the ‘outstanding’ Ofsted-rated school, told the News: “At Cherry Garden School outdoor learning is highly valued and Southwark are funding the vast majority of the bespoke equipment needed to meet the wide range of physical needs.

“We will have amazing facilities such as a hydro pool, sensory room, soft play rooms, trampoline room, two playgrounds, a sensory outdoor

Family say raiders can just jump into their garden from cemetery

A DISABLED man and his family have said they are ‘living in fear’ after being targeted by burglars who can simply jump into their garden from Nunhead Cemetery.

Syreeta and Ray Davis, who live on Ivydale Road, were first burgled on September 30, 2016 when £25,000 worth of uninsured goods were stolen from their home, including £2,000 in cash, while they were on a family holiday celebrating Ms Davis’ 40th birthday.

Ms Davis says they even took her work uniform and tried to set fire to the house.

The intruders appeared to have broken in using a crowbar on the back door.

At the beginning of March they were targeted again, when a silver Corolla bicycle was stolen from their garden on Friday, March 9.

CCTV footage shows the burglars walking from the undergrowth near the cemetery, which is level height with their garden wall, and jumping down into the garden, which is not protected by a fence.

Estate residents to get faster broadband

SOUTHWARK: Residents living on council estates across the borough could get access to faster broadband by this time next year after the council shook hands with new providers.

The council has entered into an agreement with Hyperoptic, which will give the company access to its estates, allowing it to connect 53,000 council homes and 1,000 businesses in the borough to full fibre broadband.

The local authority has also reached a similar access agreement with Community Fibre which will roll out its fibre optic to home connectivity in the same area. Both companies have committed to providing every councilowned TRA (tenants’ and residents’ association) hall and community centre with free gigabit broadband connections.

They will also offer digital inclusion training to staff and residents.

The news follows the announcement in November that the council had signed agreements with Relish for 21 of its residential blocks. These have now been installed with seventeen sites already live, and the remaining due to go live by the end of the month. Southwark was also part of a successful bid led by TfL to improve broadband. There will be two new fibre networks across the particularly bad ‘not spot’ areas of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, and Southwark will benefit from a share of an £8.5million grant to implement this over the next few years.

Now the couple, who are parents to three teenage children, are calling on Family Mosaic and the council to look at rebuilding the fence to protect them from being targeted in future.

Ms Davis, aged 41, says it took years for them to be re-housed in a property which met her partner’s needs.

Mr Davis’s lower right leg was amputated below the knee after a moped accident, eighteen years ago on Peckham Rye, which left him hospitalised for five months.

He now makes prosthetic limbs for other amputees at the Bowley Close rehabilitation centre in Crystal Palace, run by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust, where he had received support after his accident. Their home in Nunhead includes a lift, and full wheelchair access,

including lower sinks and other fittings.

BERMONDSEY HAS beaten Peckham to be named as the best place to live in London.

The area has been named as the top place to reside in the capital in this year’s Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide.

Peckham, which was named best place to live in the capital last year, didn’t make the 2018 list.

Herne Hill was also among the ten London places to feature in the guide, as well as Clapton, Fulham, Furzedown, King’s Cross, Notting Hill, Richmond, Tufnell Park, and Wanstead.

Bermondsey’s ranking as the best place to live in London “reflects the rise of an area that epitomises the modern urban good life”, according to the guide. It nods to Maltby Street Market, the White Cube gallery, the Fashion and Textile Museum and independent cinema Kino as reasons for the accolade.

“Its residents are typically young, affluent and often reside in photogenic lofts in converted warehouses, while railway arches are fast being converted into galleries, bars and restaurants,” the guide adds.

These include Clapton, a former “nogo” area that’s now among the capital’s “hippest neighbourhoods”; “resurgent” Notting Hill, which is “luring families and foodies back west”; and Furzedown, an “urban village that’s cheaper than Balham, but less gritty than Streatham”.

The guide assesses a wide range of factors, from jobs, schools and broadband speed to culture, community spirit and local shops, in order to compile the definitive top locations to live.

“We have invited them to meet with us and visit the area, to identify any action we could take to improve the security for residents bordering the perimeter of Nunhead Cemetery.”

Ministry of Sound launches private members’ club

BOROUGH: Popular nightclub Ministry of Sound has announced the opening of The Ministry – a private members’ club combined with a shared working space.

The new venture is set to open in a former Victorian warehouse on Borough Road this July, just a stone’s throw away from the existing nightclub in Elephant and Castle.

The site, designed by awardwinning architects Squire & Partners, will contain a 70-foot bar spanning the entire ground floor.

There will also be four floors of private offices and shared working areas, as well as a full table service restaurant, 36-seater cinema, technology studio, sound proof production suites, and serviced meeting rooms where lunch can be ordered at the push of a button.

The Ministry will also have a large events space and year-round outdoor courtyard serving coffee and drinks to members and their guests.

A BERMONDSEY mum turned a bedtime story for her daughter into a best-selling book.

Val Blackburn’s book Jasper the Firefighting Dragon, which she made up for her daughter Elizabeth when she was a toddler, made it onto two Amazon bestseller lists.

The 32-year-old mum decided to make publishing the book her maternity project while pregnant with her second daughter Imogen.

It was later listed at number 37 on the Amazon bestseller list for Friendship in Children’s Books, and number 98 in Myths, Fables and Legend in Children's Books earlier this month.

Speaking to the News, Val said: “Like most parents I make up stories for my children.

“I’ve got lots of different ones and that night I was given a request that she wanted a story about a dragon and a fire engine.

“The only way I could think of doing that without making the dragon a baddie was to have him as a waterbreathing dragon to help the fire brigade.

“We had it so the dragon didn’t fit in with the other dragons as there were camping trips with camp fires getting water sprayed on them, so he was feeling lonely.

“Then he saw a house fire and sprayed water on it and when the fire brigade turned up the house had already been saved.

“Everyone was pleased with him and they asked him to join the fire brigade, and in winter he also freezes the town square and they ice-skate on it.”

Val said she decided to pay for an illustrator when Elizabeth kept asking for pictures to go with the story, and ended up publishing it in August last year.

“Everyone said the book was good enough to publish so I thought ‘let’s give it a bash’ and other people’s children also like it,” she said.

Val is also co-director of two London tour guide companies, which she writes the scripts for, and has a background in theatre.

3,000 capacity live music venue to open at printworks ROTHERHITHE

A NEW 3,000-capacity live music venue will be launched at the old printworks in Rotherhithe this weekend.

The venue, based in the Daily Mail’s former Harmsworth Quays Printworks, which also churned out copies of the Metro and Evening Standard, will open its doors on Friday, March 23.

The first live show in the new space will come from art-rock artist Django Django on Friday, which will be followed by a programme including shows from drum and bass titans Pendulum on April 14, and multi-

instrumentalist Tokio Myers on April 10. Printworks will also be kicking off a year-long residency from Youth Club Archive, which will be allowing access to its tens of thousands of youth subculture images from the past four decades for the first time.

Dedicated to celebrating youth culture, the non-profit organisation will host an exhibition as well as building an open workspace and dark room facility which will see them work with a team of volunteers and interns to digitise hundreds of thousands of previously unseen negatives and prints.

The arts and culture programming will be overseen by Tamsin Ace, head of festival programme at the

Southbank Centre.

Having opened in 2017 in the industrial surroundings of the former printing facility, Printworks has already delivered a year-long programme of electronic events, as well as the live launch of Gorillaz’ latest album Humanz, Tom Misch and Afropunk Festival, and music video shoots for stars including Stormzy.

Bradley Thompson, managing director of Broadwick Live, which runs the venue, said: “We feel hugely privileged to have helped breathe life back into this remarkable landmark since it opened its doors as a venue in 2017.

“It was always our ambition for Printworks to lead the way not just in

‘Quietway’ cycle route proposed

WALWORTH: Kids can learn how to build a bike from recycled parts – and take it home for free – thanks to a new scheme from Community Cycleworks.

The family-friendly DIY workshop will see unwanted but reusable bicycles and bike parts collected from the Southwark Reuse and Recycling Centre off the Old Kent Road.

They will then be put to good use with the help of the Community Cycleworks team.

All children taking part will be able to take home their own, newly built bike, for free.

The bike-making workshop event takes place on February 24 in Burgess Park.

CYCLISTS COULD soon have a new commuter route down the Old Kent Road if council plans are approved.

Olympians’ gold medal for school SIX TIME Olympic champion cyclist Chris Hoy presented St Francis RC Primary School with a gold medal award for its space-themed World Book Day display.

The school won £5,000 worth of books from judging panel Sir Chris Hoy, awardwinning author Joanna Nadin, and illustrator Clare Elsom.

Nanaba, Junior, Deborah and Angel in Year 6 said: “Books encourage your imagination to take flight; the books we read assist us to fly high into our own world of novels, to become writers and to use our ideas and imagination to create our own stories. CHILDREN FROM St James' School had fun meeting real scientists at the Blue Market for British Science Week.

Biologist Professor Neil Stoker and chemist Dr Shyam Prasad led activities in a marquee at the market square off Southwark Park Road and in the adjacent Bermondsey Uprising community pop up shop on March 9.

The children helped scientists identify animals in Africa, made their own slime, explored surprising sound effects and

optical illusions, and designed posters for the national British Science Week poster competition.

Science Week events continued in Bermondsey Uprising over the weekend, with Professor Stoker and artist Jyl Fountain discussing the science of clay.

Russell Dryden, of Blue Bermondsey Business Improvement District, also talked to children about how St James’ School had changed since he was a pupil there. Bermondsey Uprising is funded by United St Saviour's Charity, while the British Science Week events were sponsored by the Blue Bermondsey Business Improvement District.

Southwark Council wants to develop a new ‘Quietway’ from Bermondsey to Peckham as a safe alternative to the Surrey Canal path, which it says is often busy with walkers and joggers.

The new cycle route is designed for less-confident cyclists and people who want to travel along routes with less traffic.

The work would also see road improvements such as replacing speed bumps, new crossings, and double yellow lines to improve visibility, as well as a two-way segregated cycle path on Trafalgar Avenue.

Hamlet deliver perfect performance to warm supporters’ hearts

DULWICH HAMLET supporters braved the freezing conditions and the snow on Sunday to make their temporary home a fortress and send a defiant message that their spirit will not be broken.

There were 860 in attendance at Tooting & Mitcham’s Imperial Fields, the majority of them in pink and black and they were rewarded as they watched their side romp to a 3-0 win over Worthing.

Hamlet were playing their first league game at the venue after being served notice on its licence to play at Champion Hill by owner Meadow.

Eight miles down the road, Gavin Rose’s side defied the conditions and all the off-pitch troubles to move back to the top of the Bostick League Premier Division table.

His players headed to the home end after the final whistle, where their efforts were applauded by a raucous crowd.

Supporter Kevin Oakhill, 39, journeyed from St Alban’s, where he lives, for the game.

“I was living in south London until last year and caught the bug, and I’m still travelling to the games,” he explained.

“We were flitting between non-league teams, doing the rounds of the grounds, and it is such a nice club to support. The atmosphere is fantastic, and I’ve been to more and more games each season, 25 this season.

“When you’re travelling 50 miles anyway then eight isn’t much of a problem. Obviously the situation is a nightmare for us and we’re genuinely grateful to Tooting for having us here. It’s not something they had to do.

“It’s not our home, Champion Hill is and that’s where we’re supposed to be.

The support from Southwark Council has been fantastic. But one of the big problems now is that were this game at Champion Hill on a Saturday we’d probably have 1,800 people at it.

Obviously that’s costing us quite a bit of money.

“The support has been incredible, everyone from Gary Lineker to Sadiq Khan. They’re not doing it because it’s Dulwich Hamlet, they’re doing it because it’s a grassroots local football team and

this sort of thing shouldn’t be happening.

“There was a huge level of support for this club anyway, there is only one other club that gets these kinds of crowds at this level and that’s Hereford. This is a big club by these standards and it’s so important to the community.

“To start with there were three or four of us friends who went to games, now there are seven or eight. We don’t attract fans because we have big names like Jermaine Pennant and Jamie O’Hara, like Billericay have. They come because it’s such a nice club.”

Stuart Boyd, 38, from Surbiton, is also a Tottenham fan, but the ease of attending Hamlet games and the buzz around the club has meant he has become a regular.

“This is easier,” he said. “I love waking up in the morning and deciding if I want to go for a few drinks with my mates and watch a game. That’s what’s so beautiful about not just Dulwich, but any nonleague club. It’s hassle-free and at Dulwich in particular there is a wonderful atmosphere.

“If you go to Champion Hill on Saturdays you tend to see a lot of families as well. People just want to go and enjoy it.”

Such is the interest in the saga that there were TV crews from NBC and Al Jazeera at Imperial Fields at the weekend.

Hamlet club scout, Richard Lewis, was doubling up as a steward on Sunday, and he had also attended a rally organised by supporters in Dulwich the previous day.

“Football has been my life for 40 years and it was a hell of a shock to be told that my football on a Tuesday and a Saturday might be coming to an end after all the hard voluntary work I’ve put into it over the years,” he said.

“The club is part and parcel of the community and it is important that they survive. I went on the protest [Saturday].

Two and a half thousand people walked three miles to protest, great behaviour, making the point that the club is part of the community, and that is something Meadow have failed to recognise.

“The supporters have been absolutely fantastic. Seeing the railings around the ground, it really does hit you.”

Rose was never going to use the excuse of playing in unfamiliar surroundings even if they hadn’t got the result.

“The players are local to Tooting anyway so that’s not too much of a drama,” Rose said. “Obviously the players will take a few games to get used to it but I don’t think it’s as big an obstacle as some have made out.

“We’ve just got to concentrate on getting out onto the pitch and nothing changes then, same ball, two goals at either end.

“It can be distracting, but my job is what happens out on the pitch. If we don’t perform then everyone looks at me. I just make sure I’m doing my job. Of course I’m aware of everything because it affects me and it affects the players. But when I’m here on a match-day it’s where I want to be and I’m focused on doing my job.”

Billericay have five games in hand and are favourites to clinch the title, while Folkestone are also in the mix.

“We’ve played Folkstone once and they are a really good team, we have a lot of respect for them,” Rose continued. “If Billericay win their games in hand then

they are in the ascendancy. They’ve shown they are fallible, they have lost games in the last month and that probably gives their opponents more confidence that they are not invincible.

“There are not a lot of games left and there is still a lot to play for. It makes it fun.”

THE SUPPORT for Dulwich Hamlet has been “heartening”, said club director Tom Cullen, who added: “It’s a story that won’t stop until we are back home.”

Cullen saw Gavin Rose’s side defeat Worthing 3-0 at the home of Tooting & Mitcham, whom he also thanked for their support.

Hamlet are hopeful that Southwark council can buy Champion Hill from owners Meadow, allowing the club to move back home.

“I am more optimistic, especially after the intervention of the Sports Minister [Tracey Crouch] on Friday and Helen Hayes speaking in parliament,” Cullen said. “I think it’s putting pressure on Meadow and they are realising the gravity of the situation they find themselves in.

“I hope they can get a deal done very quickly so we can get back to Champion Hill.

It’s a story that won’t stop until we are back home. It’s been very heartening to get so much support

from the football world but also from local press, national press, politicians, the local community as we saw at the rally yesterday. Over 2,000 people turned up and marched to the ground.

“You couldn’t wish for more, and it’s been quite humbling the number of people rallying around you. It does help getting you up in the morning and carrying on fighting.

“We had over 2,000 out in the cold [Saturday] and more than 800 here [Sunday]. It’s hard to ask people to give up an entire weekend for Dulwich Hamlet. They are very good numbers, to travel down here on a cold, snowy Sunday to support us. I’m sure the next couple of games here will be good in terms of numbers.

“We’ve got a game here on Good Friday [against Dorking] which I think will see a very large attendance.

THE RESULTS of Southwark Council’s largest ever consultation with people living in the borough have been published, with 70 per cent of people saying they feel positive about change, but with housing a key concern.

From October to December, 2017, the council spoke with more than 3,000 people for its ‘Southwark Conversations’ project, to see how they felt about change in their community and how it can help people lead healthier lives, improve neighbourhoods and help young people growing up succeed.

regeneration, so that ‘everyone has a say and no one is left behind’.

Although 70 per cent of people felt wholly or partly positive about change in the borough, just over half (52 per cent) said they have personally benefited from change.

Housing was a key concern, for almost a quarter of people. Respondents wanted more affordable and council housing, better quality and maintenance, more support for the homeless and more integration between people living in different types of housing.

The number of empty properties in the borough was also highlighted.

Other issued raised include the need for more visible policing, reduced air pollution, and more opportunities for young people.

Councillor Johnson Situ, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for business, culture and social regeneration extended his thanks to all the people who responded to the consultation and helped organise meetings where residents could share their views.

He said: “A sense of pride in their local

“Housing was a key concern, and the free gym and swims were highlighted as being a real success, especially as people liked the number of leisure facilities across the borough.

CHILDREN AT a Peckham primary school were shown how to dribble, pass and shoot by Millwall FC’s team coach before being handed their new kit.

Coach Dean Palmer taught pupils at Pilgrim Way Primary School basic football skills as well as some of the drills used by the Lions team.

Midfielder Ben Thompson, keeper Harry Girling and striker Harry Smith also visited the school to present the children with their new kits donated by energy company ENGIE. While there, the players also answered the youngsters’ questions about the health side of playing professional football and signed autographs.

ENGIE, which organised the events, is carrying out demolition and external works to the Tustin Estate, directly adjacent to the school, over the next two years.

Pauline Dutch, PHSE co-ordinator at Pilgrims Way, said: “The new kit is great and having both ENGIE and the Millwall players at our school was a great afternoon for the children.”

A DULWICH secondary school has won two national awards for its exams results.

Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich has been recognised nationally for its results in 2017 based on data from the Department of Education and Ofsted, analysed by SSAT (the Schools, Students and Teachers network).

The school, found to be among the bestperforming secondary schools in the country, received an award for being in the top 20 per cent of non-selective schools nationally for attainment, and one for being in the top ten per cent for progress.

The SSAT Educational Outcomes database compares all state-funded schools in England, with the highest performing for a range of key measures presented with SSAT Educational Outcomes Awards.

Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich will be presented with their awards in the summer term at a ceremony attended by winners from across the region.

Fears over Kennington tube station safety KENNINGTON

Resident group concerned as Bank branch platform to be closed for four months

ENGINEERING WORKS will bring no improved safety for commuters, despite the four-month Bank branch closure at Kennington station, say campaigners.

As reported by the News last month, from Saturday, May 26 until midSeptember, Bank branch trains will not stop at Kennington to allow four new customer passageways to be built.

The news came as a surprise to residents and councillors, who said they had not been consulted about the closure.

TfL says the passageways are needed to make it quicker and easier for customers to change between different north line branches, including the extension from Battersea, expected to be completed in 2020.

Kennington will remain open for the

duration of the work, with customers able to board trains northbound, via the Charing Cross branch, or southbound to Morden.

But the Kennington and Walworth Neighbourhood Action Group believes public safety is at risk during the planned works as there are no escalators at the station, and the sole emergency exit route is up an old spiral staircase.

The group says that according to TfL’s own reports, it would take a full nineteen minutes to evacuate passengers from the station if an incident occurred during peak hours, rising to twenty minutes once the Northern Line extension is up and running.

A spokesperson for the group told the News: “Commuters will not be able to get on or off the Bank branch at Kennington for four months while TfL carry out platform level works for the Northern Line extension and yet there is

no masterplan to address the safety issues that will only get worse once the extension is complete.”

The group are calling on TfL to reconsider its plans and improve access to and from the station and, in light of the on-going disruption, bring forward the re-zoning of Kennington to zones one/two.

“We have robust operational plans in place to ensure that Kennington station remains safe throughout the construction of the additional customer passageways.

“The decision to keep the station open for the duration of the work, while running Bank branch trains non-stopping

through the station, was made earlier this year following detailed work to determine the safest and least disruptive solution.

“We apologise to Northern Line customers and to local residents for the disruption this work will cause but it’s essential to enable customers to access the new Northern Line extension when it opens.”

AN AFTERNOON tea inspired by the solar system has arrived on the Southbank.

A NEW erotic art exhibition featuring work from more than one hundred international artists is coming to Peckham Rye’s Copeland Park gallery.

Organiser Espen Krukhaug, who divides his time between Oslo and London, is bringing the exhibition to Peckham from Norway.

He says he still had a strong connection to Peckham, from his time as a former student at Camberwell College of Arts.

Mr Krukhaug, 39, told the News: “I’m hoping to make the erotic art exhibition a yearly event in Peckham, and for it to become more like a festival with workshops and talks which inspire people to go home and make art.

“We look at erotic art through history, the difference between art and pornography, and try and break the stigma of erotic art, which has often been a hidden secret.”

He claims well-known artists have submitted pieces under fake names, as erotic art is still taboo in the high-end art world.

Submissions for next year’s exhibition will soon be opening, and the organisers are encouraging established artists and amateurs to get in touch with their submissions.

Former MP’s view of the Blue Market

QUITE RIGHTLY, Southwark News has published recently several letters with suggestions about how we boost the success of the Blue Market.

I want to support the cause, as I have always done, support many of the ideas put forward and add some of my own.

It is very disappointing that despite the best efforts of Russell Dryden and the Blue Bid (Business Improvement District) Southwark Council over recent years has done so little to support our traders and this important community.

My suggestions are: 1. Vacant shops in the square and Southwark Park Road must be let much more quickly. Better to have temporary use at lower rents then no use and no rents for months.

2. On Saturdays the Blue needs to join up with the new and very successful food and drink market which now stretches from Maltby Street down the railway line into SE16.

3. The Blue Market has to have a brand of its own. It could be a new Cockney Market or London History and Heritage Market or something else, but it needs a brand.

4. On Saturdays and in school holidays local schools and colleges and other students should be invited to display and sell their wares, arts, inventions and good business ideas.

There could be dedicated stalls for young entrepreneurs.

5. On Fridays we could promote local businesses which are members of Southwark Chamber of Commerce.

6. Above all we should build on the ideas of Russell and others to make the Blue and the area around it a centre for music and the performing arts- with live performance in the Blue, local churches, pubs and schools. We could have monthly music events- folk one month, then jazz, then blues, then classical. We should invite local schools, colleges and theatre companies to perform and take part. These dates could become the Blue music and drama market, and with local artists giving time free we could soon start attracting the crowds.

7. We could regularly have Millwall footballers, Surrey cricketers and other sports people coming to the Blue, local sports competitions and items from the Millwall, Surrey and other club shops.

8. And the Blue should have one person engaged to be the big Blue promoter.

When local people choose their new councillors in the next few weeks, I hope they will choose people who are committed to boosting the Blue.

How to combat the Diabetes problem

THERE IS no one-size-fits all approach when it comes to making food choices, but it is important that people with diabetes, and those at risk of Type 2 diabetes, are supported to choose the right foods for them to improve their health and quality of life.

That’s why we have issued new Diabetes UK nutrition guidelines for healthcare professionals.

For the first time, the guidelines show how people with Type 2 diabetes might be able to achieve remission.

Eating certain foods such as vegetables, fruits, wholegrains, fish, nuts and pulses can also help manage blood glucose levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in people with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, as well as reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

These foods are usually associated with the Mediterranean-style diet, but can be adapted to cultural and personal preferences.

Eating less red and processed meat, refined carbohydrates − such as white bread and rice − and drinking fewer sugar sweetened drinks, is also recommended.

Being active daily and achieving at least 150 minutes of physical activity over a week through a variety of exercise can help people with diabetes lead healthy lives and prevent the onset

Leave baby Blue Tits be

THIS BABY blue tit has become the poster bird for young chicks around the UK this breeding season as it yells for its mum while looking helpless, dishevelled and desperate.

The natural reaction for anyone with a heart would be to try to help, perhaps by moving it somewhere safer or even taking it indoors.

But the RSPB is urging everyone to leave baby birds alone, as interfering could do more harm than good and the kindest thing to do, is nothing at all.

The advice they are given is to rest assured that Mum and Dad are probably close by and most definitely know best.

This precarious period when birds first leave the nest may look harsh, but is all part of the process of a young bird learning to survive on its own.

Justin Hoffman, who captured the different stages of this blue tit leaving the nest, told us: “We’ve been very lucky to have a pair of blue tits nesting in our garden for many years. While drinking my morning coffee, I could hear some earnest cheeping outside, so I peered out the back window towards our garden nest box. I could see a little head peeking

out the nest box hole. The chicks were fledging!

“I grabbed my camera and my longest lens, so I wouldn’t get too close and disturb the birds. I watched the chicks fledge the nest one by one. One of the chicks got caught up in a garden plant below the nest box. The baby eventually freed itself with the encouragement of the parents. The chick clumsily made its way to a sturdy perch and began calling out loudly as one of the parents returned with a juicy meal!”

Justin’s image sums up perfectly what many of us think when confronted with similar spectacles. This leads to an annual flood of calls to our reserves and offices in early spring. The understandable urge to help is almost palpable, but it’s not cruel to leave baby birds alone. They need to figure out and learn how to survive by themselves, because within days they’ll be out of the family nest without their parents’ support.

I want a better service at my post office

I’M NOT some kind of troubleshooter, just an ordinary resident of Walworth who wants to use the post office.

I shouldn’t be a pawn in some longrunning industrial dispute just because I want to post a letter. Lately, however, that has become just about impossible so I need to appeal through your letters page for someone to knock the heads of staff and management together once and for all, so that Walworth gets a post office that is functional rather than dysfunctional.

Currently I have to get on my bike and cycle to Kennington or Westminster Bridge which have excellent, efficient post offices but I am able-bodied and able to do this. A poor elderly woman

with a buggy in the enormous queue in front of me at Walworth Road last Saturday morning eventually walked out in despair, and I followed shortly afterwards. (I’d tried to go on Friday evening, but they’d packed up and gone home at 5pm because of a sprinkling of snow.)

A measure of Walworth PO’s problems is that it had a week-long refit last year (which got me quite excited), only to emerge even worse than before. This is incredible, but true.

Scarcely more than three of its eight counters continue to function, and even these at a funereal pace while other staff wander about behind, apparently engaged in more important duties than serving customers.

The two automatic parcel-sending machines which had been installed the year before had been removed, presumably because they were always breaking down (though they seem to function well at other branches). In their place was a hopeless shop selling calendars and other slow-moving items, which has subsequently closed.

A sign indicates that the biometric passport service – doubtless installed at vast expense – has also closed.

Walworth PO’s neighbours also get a regular alarm call from its burglar alarm in the early hours; I hear it from blocks away at least once a week on my way to work – also symptomatic of poor maintenance.

It all points to a chronically mismanaged branch with intractable labour relations problems.

I know the nearby Crampton Street sorting office is scheduled for closure which is disappointing for Walworth but I hope there may be some payback from the Post Office in finally giving us a modern and helpful sub-post office such as exists elsewhere in London – surely Walworth deserves this?

This new production delves into America’s biggest political scandal, involving Lewinsky and President Clinton, with the five main female protagonists (The First Lady, a secretary, a daughter, a confident, an intern) battling it out on stage with their own versions of what happened.

Joshua McTaggart, Artistic Director at The Bunker, spoke to Weekender about Devil With The Blue Dress, first explaining why, twenty years after the event, this new play is premiering here and not the US: ‘The writer is a huge fan of British theatre and we have had many a discussion about how British audiences are more excited by political thrillers on stage than American audiences. Also, in New York, it can take a long time to get a play programmed, whereas in London we take more risks on new work.

I wanted to know why Joshua brought it to The Bunker: ‘I have spent a lot of my adult life in the US and always been fascinated by its history; the Clinton administration is held by many in such high esteem, but this play forces us to reassess that period with the lens of #MeToo movement and how we talk about this particular abuse of power.’

Joshua told of how the play is based on ‘the memoirs of both Bill and Hillary Clinton, the Ken Starr report, Monica Lewinsky's interviews, as well as testimonies in the Paula Jones deposition…Kevin has written a piece that is very much about bringing to the forefront the stories of the five different women who found themselves at the centre of this scandal.’

Of course, in the interim years things have changed greatly, and many celebrity

heroes have now been declared villains, and the audience will have to make up their own mind about who was right or wrong in the Monica Lewinsky Scandal, and Joshua, who will be directing, says ‘the play provides space for debate, discussion, and disagreement, and I can't wait to have those conversations both in the rehearsal room and with audiences after the show.’

The director went on to praise his ‘talented all-female creative team that continue to challenge me and make sure that our collaboration will create something unique and brave in all its elements’, before finishing with this: ‘This year marks 20 years since Monica Lewinsky was thrown into the public limelight through the Ken Starr investigation, and this piece really allows us to properly hold the heroes of our past to the standards of today. I think what Kevin has created is a beautiful, balanced, and brave play, and I can't wait to share it with London audiences at the Bunker.’

s there an Alzheimer’s bandwagon that writers are jumping on, because at the moment there is a glut of plays and TV programmes on the problem that has touched everyone’s life in one form or another. And it is a good thing that this illness is kept at the forefront of our minds because it could be our turn next, writes Michael Holland.

Playwright Tristan Bernays’ grandfather had Alzheimer’s, and he drew on that memory of him when writing this play - Old Fools. It was a very personal play but no one wanted to put it on until he gave up trying, and that’s when the director, Sharon Burrell, asked if she could.

Old Fools begins with the perfect, flirty chat up that goes like a dream and all the chemicals in one person’s body are attracted to the chemicals in another person’s body, and the body language is in symmetry, and it leads to a dance and the dance leads to a kiss and the next thing you know the soft lights have changed to stark and harsh light, and the man that you fell in love with and

Clinton battles Lewinsky in The Bunker

AS MONICA Lewinsky comes out in the media attaching herself to the #MeToo movement she throws the talk radio world into disarray: ‘Does an adult consenting to sex qualify for the same sympathy afforded to nonconsenting victims of sexual abuse just because Bill Clinton was a powerful, older man?’ asks the LBC presenter. Perhaps the question can be better answered in Kevin Armento’s play on the subject, Devil With The Blue Dress, writes Michael Holland.

married is now a quivering, shaking wreck, a shell, empty of any of what went before. That’s how Old Fools begins. It leaps - in a flash - from the first, fleeting feelings of love in a relationship, to the tragic end when the husband no longer recognises the wife.

The constant jumps in time initially confused, but confusion is how sufferers spend most of their existence. The audience has to work harder and concentrate more to know what period of the protagonists’ lives are being played out: is it the blissful, honeymoon period or the problem years of their relationship? Is it the early onset stages of Alzheimer’s, the mid-term, or end stages? Are they playing Tom and Viv, or daughter Alice and Dad? We are, in just one intense hour, taken through a whole lifetime: births, career moves, splitting up, getting back together, becoming unwell, forgetting names of loved ones, remembering lyrics of songs that have a special meaning from years before.

Bernays’ words are funny, painful, poignant. Frances Grey and Mark Arends are quite brilliant. They, orchard. It would be possible to see in the ineffectual aristocracy, an image of a Britain slow to wake up to the reality of its waning influence, and in the face of a threat like this week’s nerve agent attack, lacking real power to respond.

However, in this story, the upstart merchant does not hold onto his power or money for long, as he is almost immediately displaced by the Bolshevik revolutionaries. If any comparison is worth making, Putin’s political fortunes look considerably more secure, at least for the foreseeable future.

There is more humour in the play than the description above might imply.

Chekhov wrote it as a comedy and was unhappy with it being played as a tragedy.

Both approaches are possible but this errs on the side of the former and gets the laughs. So, some light relief here from a world that seems to have turned pretty dark.

One of the actors broke a hip and had

with excellent lighting changes, switch in an instant from young lovers without a care in the world to middle-aged worriers with the problems of the world on their wearied shoulders. They switch between timelines and characters at the flick of a switch, which cannot be easy. Top marks to Burrell for excellent direction and drawing such wonderful performances from the two actors. Between the three of them they ensured that at whatever stage of the relationship was being portrayed, the couples’ love shone through. Their love for each other was always paramount throughout the darkness and light, and it was this that made it all the more sad when Tom was so ill.

Old Fools is not an easy watch, but it is worth the effort.

I never quite lost the consciousness that I was watching people acting. One exception was Richard Gibson who was fully convincing as the ineffectual Uncle Gaev and brought the play to a genuinely emotional conclusion.

The real star of the show was the writing.

The age-old themes of love and loss, coming of age and decay are addressed with real depth. The set and lighting are beautiful. A cold dawn and beautiful sunset light were both perfectly evoked.

Visually, the whole production is impressive enough to be worth the ticket price.

ndrei took charge as soon as myself and Mr Freud walked into Rivington Grill, guiding us to the bar and leaving us in the capable hands of the resident mixologist who had 200 gins to work with, writes Michael Holland....

Eventually we decided on a citrussy Tom Collins for me (refreshingly lively), and Breakfast Martini for my companion (moreishly sour). Rivington are having a big push on the gin cocktails in preparation for spring and more of a chance to drink and dine al fresco, so we were more than willing to give that wonderful idea a little shove.

While we enjoyed those two we scanned the menu and found, like the cocktail list, we wanted just about everything on there. In the end, with a little nudge from Andrei, we managed to decide and soon had Queen Scallop Ceviche and Dressed Cornish Crab laid before us - both beautifully presented. The six scallops had been marinated in lemon, lime and orange and served with just the

merest hint of spiced guacamole and tomato dressing. They were excellent. The crab, too, was quite special. I paired the seafood starters with an Italian Chardonnay, which absolutely suited, while Mr Freud had a glass of Tempranillo, a nice red in anticipation of the main course.

In the interim between courses it was time to catch up on all things Freud: Art, muses, landlord wars and cab drivers. All entertaining and interesting topics that invigorated the soul and fired up the appetite, so that when our mains arrived we were both ready and able.

I had the Monkfish Masala. At first I thought the curry was going to overwhelm the tender flavour of the fish but it surprisingly held its own, and I found that I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

The Lamb Henry was a mighty chunk of tender, perfectly cooked meat, with just enough pink in the middle and a bone you could pull out with your fingers. We were

more than happy that there was more than enough for two of us to share.

The restaurant was quite full now, which for a Tuesday is a good sign.

The mixologist was busy mixing, the servers were here, there and everywhere serving, and Andrei was making his presence felt all over while he ensured that operations ran smoothly. Me and Mr Freud were impressed with everything. We just had to check out the cheese board.

A selection of British cheeses were the ideal end to our meal, combining goat’s cheese, cheese made from ewes’ milk, and a very flavoursome Stilton, that we concurred was our favourite. Just as impressive was the Apple Chutney, made in house from apples, fennel, sugar and vinegar.

The Rivington Grill is good at what it does by using quality produce and cooking it well, so it is no wonder that they have a solid customer base.

Memories of Tommy’s EACH YEAR since 2003 local people have been voting for the people, events and places they have felt worthy of a blue plaque.

A RETIRED nurse who trained at St Thomas’ Hospital in the early 1950s has shared memories of her time there as the NHS prepares to celebrate its 70th anniversary.

Grace Jones, 89, started her midwifery training at St Thomas’ just four years after the NHS was launched on July 5, 1948.

The great-grandmother remembers trying to get to sleep in the nurses’ accommodation as Big Ben chimed outside, strict rules about makeup and appearance, 52-hour working weeks, and new-born babies faced with the Capital’s terrible smog.

“In those days all the nurses had to live in a home which was on the corner of Westminster Bridge,” said Grace.

“When I arrived I couldn’t sleep because of the chimes from Big Ben, but after a few nights I got used to it.

“We weren’t allowed to wear any makeup and hair styles should have been short but we adapted the 50s style by using a cloth band and wrapped our hair into it to create a roll at the back and a bit of a quiff at the front – getting your cap to fit neatly was the challenge.”

In the early 1950s rationing was still in effect but, because the nursing accommodation was full board and included all meals, the trainee midwives only received one week’s ration every six weeks.

“The smog in London was so bad in the early ‘50s that some of the babies had dirt around their noses.”

At the time only registered nurses could begin midwifery training, which involved spending six months in a hospital and six months in the community.

“Time off was precious because we worked 52-hour weeks so we enjoyed spending our month’s allowance of £4 on shopping in the West End, “said Grace, who now lives in Conwy, north Wales.

Grace explained new mothers were in ‘confinement’ on the ward for up to two weeks after giving birth and their babies stayed in the nursery.

“It’s hard to imagine now, but back then women were confined to their beds for most of that time and were given instructions about breastfeeding, bathing, dressing and undressing babies and general domestic hygiene,” she said.

“Babies were labelled in the nursery so we could identify them and there was virtually no security on the wards.

“The smog in London was so bad in the early 50s that some of the babies had dirt around their noses.

“Premature babies did not have such a good chance compared to now, but were given careful nursing care.”

In the end, Grace did not complete her midwifery training because she got married and gave birth to her son, Glyn, in 1953.

After having her second child, Ruth, in 1955, the family moved to north Wales and Grace started nursing again in the A&E department of The Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Rhyl.

She had her third child, Eurian, in 1963 and went on to work as a ward sister in geriatrics until she retired in the 1990s.

Grace recently returned to the maternity unit at St Thomas’ with her daughters to see how much had changed since she left more than 65 years ago.

“Although the hospital looks the same from the

outside, it was unrecognisable inside,” she said.

“It was great to see how far we have come as a profession over the last 70 years in caring for women and their new-born babies.

“The humanity, dedication, understanding and expertise remains in the staff at St Thomas’ and in the hard working staff of the NHS.”

The scheme came about after the ‘News’ approached English Heritage to get more of our history recognised, only to be told that most of our buildings would not qualify as they were destroyed in the blitz and post war era.

Working in partnership with Southwark Heritage Association and Southwark Council, over 50 of our own blue plaques have been erected.

Background

The Mayor of Southwark's Common Good Trust is a registered charity that helps poor and needy people who live in or have strong links to the London Borough of Southwark. We help both individuals and families on the basis of need alone and regardless of age, faith, gender, nationality, ethnic origin, gender or sexuality. Support is usually provided in the form of small grants for buying items that are essential for meeting basic needs and living in dignity.

The Trust is governed by a Board of Trustees that includes representatives of local businesses, voluntary and community organisations and others. Our Chair of Trustees is the Mayor of Southwark Council. Our work is carried out entirely by volunteers.

The Trust is currently seeking to appoint a new Secretary to provide administrative support. This is a voluntary role but in recent years the Board of Trustees has decided to make an honorary payment (to be agreed). This is to reflect both the time taken by the role and its importance to the success of the Trust's work.

The Secretary is also entitled to claim the reimbursement of expenses legitimately occurred by him or her, subject to the endorsement of the Board of Trustees. All such expenses are reported at Board meetings.

The Secretary is appointed by the Mayor, with this appointment subject to the endorsement of Trustees. The Secretary provides the Board of Trustees with such professional administrative advice as may be required from time to time, but the Secretary is not eligible to serve as a Trustee, or vote on issues discussed at meetings of the charity.

The Lionesses are in second place in Women’s Super League 2, and would be level on points with Doncaster Belles had they not been docked three points for fielding an ineligible player earlier this season.

It is over a year since Burch’s side have lost a league game.

“It’s great to have continued the momentum from the Spring Series and bring this forward into the current campaign,” Burch said. “As well as continuing the flow forward, we’ve got better and shown everyone in the league that we’re no fluke.”

MILLWALL LIONESSES boss Lee Burch believes his side are showing their Spring Series form was “no fluke” as they prepare to resume their league campaign this Sunday.

Clunis' century as Hamlet move five clear NYREN CLUNIS scored his 100th goal for Dulwich Hamlet who moved five points clear at the top of the Bostick League Premier Division table with a 3-1 win at Lowestoft on Tuesday night.

Gavin Rose’s Hamlet picked up where they had left off after Sunday’s 3-0 win over Worthing at their temporary home at Tooting & Mitcham FC and went ahead through Nathan Ferguson’s effort on half an hour.

The lead was doubled a minute before the break when Lowestoft’s Ross Marshall put through his own net.

In-form Dulwich still weren’t done in the first half, and Clunis scored his landmark goal to all but wrap up the three points before the break.

The second half was a stroll for Rose’s side, the only disappointment that they didn’t add to their lead, before Travis Cole scored a consolation from the penalty spot in the last minute.

Hamlet have that points cushion over Billericay, but the division’s big spenders have six games in hand, starting with Tonbridge Angels on Thursday night.

Importantly, the Dulwich side are ten points ahead of sixth-placed Hendon as they look to secure at least another shot at promotion through the play-offs.

It in effect denies the chance of promotion for the Lionesses.

“It was a huge blow at the time, especially straight after the start of the season and the hard work we had put in in pre-season,” Burch admitted. “But, if I’m honest, promotion was never in our thoughts back then. We had ambition, of course, to better records and continue where we left off, and some belief was taken away a little.”

That three-point deduction followed, after an administration error.

“The points’ deduction was most definitely a bigger blow,” Burch said.

“The hard work we had put in against Watford, and to be in the position at the top of the table, seemed to just unravel. It seemed very unfair on all the players and staffs’ hard efforts.”

Still, it has been far from doom and gloom and there have been plenty of highlights in the campaign, not least the 1-1 draw with London Bees on February 21 that meant they hadn’t been beaten in the league for more than 365 days.

Burch said: “Obviously a year unbeaten is a great achievement, though the game against London Bees was one of mixed emotions. We knew that we could have and should have got three points but in the end were lucky to come

away with one, and the relief that a year had passed.”

Away from the league, the Lionesses were involved in the Continental Cup and FA Cup this season. In the Continental Cup, opposition included London Bees and Watford as well as ties with WSL 1 sides Reading and Arsenal.

“I really liked the Continental Cup group format, it gave us chances to use squad rotation for ties with Watford and London Bees,” Burch explained. “I could see how the fringe players worked in the style of play and give minutes to those that needed it most.

“When it came to ties with Reading and Arsenal, it was a great experience and opportunity to see how we could fare against the top teams in English football.”

In the FA Cup, the Lionesses defeated Coventry United before being drawn away to Arsenal, one of the best sides in the country, in the fifth round. The Lionesses battled ferociously, before going down 1-0 to the Gunners professionals.

“The Arsenal FA Cup tie summed up how far we have come,” Burch continued. “We came away from that tie thinking: ‘what if’. What if we had scored a goal and taken it on to extratime, what if we had managed to keep a clean sheet all game. What if.

“It’s a different mentality that has developed with the form we have and the forward movement that this side has had.”

The Lionesses are away at Oxford on Sunday, kicking off at 3pm.

Burch said: “It’s great to see the support we’re getting, people are taking notice and I thank every single person who shows support, whether it’s on a matchday down at Rotherhithe, at an away game or even just over social media.

Thank you all.”

Freezing conditions snow match for Dulwich schoolgirls

“YOU CAN always win if you try hard” was the rallying message from a James Allen’s Girls School athlete after her team won two gold medals at the British Schools Biathlon Championships last weekend.

The Dulwich schoolgirls braved the snow as they took on competitors from around the country at the Crystal Palace Sports Centre on March 17.

This was the second national title in six months for the athletes in the school’s under-10 team, who won their team race to add to the gold they picked up at the British Modern Biathlon Championships last November. Athletes from the senior school were also celebrating after winning team gold in the under-12 race.

The event consisted of a 50m swim followed by an 800m run on the athletics track in conditions more suited to the Winter Olympic sport with the same name.

Neither the cold nor the snow could freeze the spirits of the energetic schoolgirls as Sophia Sahai, Margaret Forster and Anna Forster worked together to all finish in the top ten out of a field of over 100 competitors in the under-10 race.

The combined times they achieved were enough to secure team gold by some distance above the second-placed team.

After the race, Anna said: “It feels great to be national champions. You can always win if you try hard, people are always

willing to help you but you also have to believe in yourself.

Sophia added: “It was a great experience and an amazing achievement, we are very proud. We are so grateful to our parents and the PE Team for supporting and training us.”

In the under-12 race, Ivanna Tymczyszyn finished just outside the top

ten in a field of 125 competitors and strong performances from her team-mates Hannah Sawyer and Erin Cox were enough to earn the school’s second gold medal of the day. They add the national title to the gold medal they won at the South East regional tournament in October.

The event was organised by Pentathlon GB, the national governing body for the Olympic sport of modern pentathlon in Great Britain.

BEN MARSHALL scored one of the goals of the season at Oakwell last Saturday and then said: ‘We believe’.

Marsahall curled a sumptuous effort past Nick Townsend from 25 yards to add to Lee Gregory’s opener and give Millwall a sixth successive away win in the league – matching the club record.

It also meant they are mathematically safe this season, though thoughts have long since turned from the threat of relegation to the possibility of a miraculous top-six finish.

The Lions’ win against Barnsley has moved them to within four points of sixth place and, indeed, of fifth.

Middlesbrough occupy the last play-off spot, a club that spent £40million more than Millwall on players this season.

Whereas the likes of Wolves can go to Portugal and Spain for players and their manager, Millwall do their shopping in different cut-price markets.

When Neil Harris wanted a winger in January the recruitment team looked at players who were out of favour elsewhere, a tricky enough task as they needed to find out why they weren’t getting a game: a matter of attitude, poor form or any other issues affecting them.

In Marshall’s case, he found himself cast down the pecking order at Wolves after the arrivals of Ivan Cavaleiro, a £7million buy from Champions League Monaco,

and £13million Helder Costa from Benfica, a winger that cost more than sixteen times Millwall’s transfer record buy.

Harris wanted someone hungry, possibly with a point to prove. Marshall has been a revelation, his strike on Saturday ending Barnsley’s hopes of getting anything out of the game, after they had threatened their opponents’ goal a number of times but were thwarted by fine saves from Jordan Archer and Jake Cooper’s clearance off the line.

Harris felt that latter intervention summed up his side’s spirit. “We had one off the line last week as well and I was very clear to say in the press that’s not a coincidence the defender clears it off the line. It’s anticipation and a winning mentality.

“That’s an indication of where we are at the moment, everyone is in it together.

The spirit in the camp is outstanding and there is great leadership in the dressing room, as well as some top young players coming through.”

Gregory joined for £250,000 from Halifax in 2014 and there have been few more better value-for-money signings in Millwall’s history. Gregory grabbed his ninth of the season in the first half, and his side has lost just once when he has got on the scoresheet, the 3-1 defeat to these opponents last September.

Millwall arrived meaning business, and not one of their players wore gloves even though temperatures dropped to as low as minus three for the earlier kick-off.

As they have done so often this season, they created the first goal by robbing the ball from their opponents. Millwall could have made it an even more comfortable win when Fred Onyedinma got through one-on-one, only for the attacker to slice his effort wide.

Aiden O’Brien made his return to the match-day squad after almost two months out injured, but he wasn’t needed. Instead it was the familiar sight of Jason Shackell and Tim Cahill coming on to help see the game out. The only thing that could make this run even better would be if Cahill got himself a goal.

The international break has arguably come at the wrong time for Millwall, but they certainly won’t lack for extra motivation when they are next in action.

Nottingham Forest handed the Lions an early lesson on the opening day that you will pay in this division if you don’t take your chances. Millwall had 25 shots on goal at the City Ground, but went down 10. That rematch promises to be a tasty Good Friday treat. After that it’s Ipswich, who snatched an injury-time 4-3 win at The Den in August. No one could have thought then that by this stage Millwall would be six points clear of Mick McCarthy’s side, with totally different targets and expectations. Get two wins from those two games, and who knows where they could end up.

“Since I’ve been here the feeling has been really good,” Marshall said. “We’ve started to believe a little bit now.”

FORMER MILLWALL striker Gary Alexander believes the Lions can reach the play-offs – and says Neil Harris deserves all the credit that comes his way.

Alexander said the job that Harris has done is “just unbelievable”, but he is not surprised as he always recognised his former strike partner was “a leader”.

Lions fan Alexander, who played 104 times for the club from 2007 to 2010 and scored 25 goals – including a double in the 2009 League One play-off final that Millwall lost 3-2 to Scunthorpe – acknowledged that the side must keep up their current run to be in with a chance of contesting an end-of-season shootout for a third successive campaign.

“Who knows? At the moment they are on a charge and, at the end of the day, everybody knows we need to keep winning,” Alexander, now manager of Ashford United in Isthmian League South, told the News this week. “If we do lose a game, then that could spell the end of it.

“But it’s credit to Neil for doing a great job. Everybody knows what he is working with so the job he is doing is just unbelievable. When you think of some of the sides that we have been playing and beating at The Den, Neil deserves every bit of credit as their budgets are much greater than ours.

“Neil was always a leader, he was doing his coaching badges when we

were still playing and he has taken to management like a duck to water. He learned his trade with the younger sides and progressed through to the first team, and is now doing a fantastic job.”

The Lions have enjoyed a superb first season back in the Championship, in large part because of the spirit and togetherness that Harris has created in the dressing room.

“First things first, you need to earn the players’ respect,” Alexander continued. “I spend quite a bit of time at the training ground. I go down there once every week or two to see Neil and all the boys. I think he has earned that respect, they have got trust in how he wants to play and work, and they are reaping the rewards for that.

“You never know how it’s going to pan out, but he has created an atmosphere in the dressing room which is second to none. The boys are used to winning games now and long may that continue.

“As a friend of mine and someone I have played with, you can only wish him all the best and hope things like this happen.”

Given how much Millwall have overachieved this season, and how unlikely a play-off challenge seemed when they were nineteenth in the table at the end of November, Alexander is surprised their run hasn’t garnered more widespread attention.

But he thinks that might suit them.

He said: “The quieter Millwall go along, the happier Neil will be.

Without even having an eye on the teams above, he wanted to get to 50

points and anything else was a bonus because that meant Millwall would stay in the Championship. So whatever else he achieves now will certainly be a bonus.

“You look at what he is working with and the size of some of the clubs in there that have had spells in the Premier League. They have had parachute payments [money distributed to relegated clubs over three years] and it becomes hard for Millwall. But he is competing and he is four points off the play-offs.

“Three months ago we were looking behind us and now we are looking up. Can we catch the teams up there?

Time will tell.”

Whatever happens, Alexander’s admiration for Harris is huge, and goes beyond football.

“Neil is someone I have played with, a friend, someone I speak to, someone who has never stopped me going to the training ground to watch training,” Alexander said. “I can knock on his door and have a chat with him.

“Everything Neil gets, he deserves.

If he was to win [another playoff final], I would be very happy for him.”

O’Brien steps up recovery as young Lions claim point

AIDEN O’BRIEN got more competitive minutes under his belt as Millwall under-23s drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest at The Den on Monday.

O’Brien was the only senior player involved for Kevin Nugent’s youngsters, who are seventh out of ten teams in Professional Development League South after the result.

Mason Saunders-Henry gave the Lions an early lead, but Forest hit back through goals from Toby Edser and Aaron Smith.

Substitute striker Noel Leighton came off the bench to equalise late on, before he missed a penalty that would have

given Millwall all three points.

O'Brien hasn’t started a senior game since he scored in the 4-3 win over Leeds United at Elland Road on January 20.

After six minutes on Monday, O'Brien took advantage of an error by Forest goalkeeper Liam Bossin before squaring for Saunders-Henry, who tapped into an empty net.

Forest worked their way back into the contest and could have levelled only for Edser to fire his side’s first effort of the game over the crossbar, before Smith then struck the base of the post with a free-kick. Stopper Ryan Sandford soon came to Millwall’s rescue, saving from Jayden Richardson.

AST FRIDAY I was invited to the Houses of Parliament with the Dulwich Hamlet campaign team so I could make contacts that would hopefully benefit Millwall Football Club’s fight going forward.

Dulwich Hamlet is in the biggest fight of its life, though their fight is slightly different to ours.

Their owners sold Hamlet’s ground, Champion Hill, to the developer, Meadow Residential, for £5.7million in 2014.

The plan was, I believe, that the developer was going to build on the land where the club sits now and construct a new stadium on an adjacent plot.

Southwark blocked those plans and that’s when things started to take a nasty turn.

The developer hit Dulwich with a large bill for rent arrears, demanding £121,000, before effectively evicting the club from Champion Hill, their home of 125 years.

Dulwich’s campaign team has had a lot of support from high-profile politicians, including Millwall fan Lord Kennedy, Tom Watson, Neil Coyle and new Lewisham MP Ellie Reeves.

So on Friday afternoon we all met on College Green outside Parliament for a photoshoot before moving on to Westminster Hall within the Houses of Parliament. It was there where we met a few more MPs showing support for Dulwich and posing for photos wearing Hamlet scarves.

All of a sudden, we were informed that Jeremy Corbyn was coming down. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a big fan of Jeremy Corbyn, but he is the leader of the Labour Party and Millwall is in the middle of a fight for the security of the club with a Labour council So I asked Lord Kennedy to introduce me to Jeremy Corbyn, which he did, and I got about five or ten minutes of his time to speak about Millwall’s battle with a secretive offshore developer and the local Labour council. He knew about our fight and then told me he would like a private meeting with me and Millwall CEO Steve Kavanagh about how football clubs like Millwall can be protected from this kind of battle for the land on which their stadiums sit.

He fully agreed with me that Lewisham council is letting down his Labour Party’s core values.

We spoke about John Smith, who opened the new Den back in 1993. We both found it hard to believe that only 25 years ago the relationship between Lewisham Labour and Millwall had been so good.

It’s 2018 and that relationship is in pieces. It needs to be rebuilt to benefit the community club to guarantee this much-needed regeneration is completed and the local football club

He was softly spoken and came across as a genuine person. We had a shared interest in that we both love our football teams passionately. (He is an Arsenal fan.)

HARRIS LENDS SUPPORT AS MILLWALL HOST MENTAL HEALTH TOURNAMENT MILLWALL’S MESSAGE to those affected by mental health problems is, “you don’t stand alone”, after the club hosted the Dwain Inniss Cup at the Lions Centre on Tuesday.

The tournament was part of the EFL’s Day of Action, when all 72 Football League clubs highlight the role football can have in improving

people’s lives.

Dwain was a five-a-side player who suffered with depression and passed away recently.

Neil Harris met Dwain’s family and spoke of the importance of supporting those suffering from mental health issues.

The Lions boss said: “It’s another way for us to show

solidarity within the community.

Myself, the players, the staff, the football club as a whole is put on a pedestal within our community and we need to find ways of giving something back.

“Supporting this, along with the EFL who have done a great job to spread the word between 72 clubs, is important.

Our way of doing it was for Dwain, and us supporting young people with mental health problems. It’s another way of us saying, ‘there are other ways we can help this community, you don’t stand alone’.

“It’s been tough for Dwain’s family this year, but we try to give a little back and putting smiles on their faces goes a long way.”

NEIL HARRIS has urged his players to pick up as many points over Easter as possible – “to carry the dream” into the final month of the season.

Millwall face Nottingham Forest at The Den on Good Friday before travelling to Ipswich on Easter Monday.

The Lions are four points off the playoffs, and if they win at Portman Road they will break the club record for successive away league victories.

Millwall have won eight and drawn four of their last twelve league games, and it could take a similar run of form to secure an improbable top-six finish.

The Lions’ longest unbeaten run under Harris is seventeen games in all competitions, which they achieved last season.

“It’s easier said than done,” Harris admitted. “To have done it in twelve, and to then go and do it in eight is a long stretch. However, we’ve done it before.

“Can we go and do it? Why not? The players are certainly approaching every game thinking they can win. I stand on the sideline watching my team in a great position as a football manager knowing my players are going to give me everything on the pitch.

“Whether we play badly and get beaten, whether we win games like we have been doing, they are going to give everything – and that’s all I can ask for.

“We’re competitive in every fixture.

STEVE MORISON doesn’t believe a successful career as a footballer should mean a right to walk into a high-profile role as a manager.

Morison, 34, begins his final coaching badge – the Pro Licence – this April, an eighteen-month course the attainment of which entitles coaches to work in the Premier League.

Morison’s friend and former Wales team-mate, Craig Bellamy, was recently offered the Oxford United manager’s job, but pulled out of the running after the club was taken over by Thai businessman Sumrith Thanakarnjanasuth.

Former England defender Sol Campbell had also been interviewed by

the previous owners, but Bellamy was deemed the best fit.

Campbell – part of Arsenal’s Invincibles in 2004 – made his displeasure known, saying clubs were scared to hire “one of the greatest minds in football” and adding he is “being wasted”.

Campbell has little coaching experience, in contrast to Bellamy who currently works in Cardiff City’s academy. Campbell has also previously said “archaic” attitudes to black players may be a reason why there are so few managing at the top level.

“It’s a difficult one,” Morison said. “I don’t think anyone has got any Godgiven right to get any job. Craig had the job but new owners came in and wanted to take a few more days. Knowing Craig, he’s a very honest and loyal person and

he thought, ‘okay, if they’re not going to do it right now then it’s not fair on Cardiff’.

“He’s learning his trade, he’s coaching every day with Cardiff. He’s doing really well there in their academy.

“With Sol Campbell, you don’t get jobs just because you go out in the press and say something. I think the race card is a cop-out and a load of rubbish. You shouldn’t just give someone a job because they’re white, black, whatever.

“It’s not even just that. Loads of people do these courses, but you have to pay for it, you’re not given it free because you’re a footballer. I’ve got friends who are doing A Licences, Pro Licences, but they would never in a million years get a chance to coach at a high level.

“Ultimately, you might have to do it like the Cowleys [brothers Danny and Nicky,

manager and assistant manager at Lincoln] have done where they went and got themselves a reputation at Braintree and then Lincoln and now they’re getting linked with jobs elsewhere.

“If you’re Sol Campbell your foot’s already halfway in the door. People obviously look at candidates and look for what they want. It’s who fits the job the best.

“If I were to chuck my hat in the ring for Oxford I’d probably get the boot straightaway. I’ve got no affiliation with the club, no rapport with the fans, I’d just be like everyone else applying for the job.

“Immediately he brings loads of media attention. He’s on Sky every week,

“But I couldn’t tell you what Sol Campbell has been doing the last five, six, seven years. You only see him when he comes out and does an interview.

“If Stevenage came in in the future and asked about me, there’s an instant appeal, an instant attraction for both of us because I’m a Hall of Fame player, I know the chairman and the fans. It’s different.

“There are loads of people who have these qualifications. If you’ve had that career you’re halfway there. But how many other people would have applied for that job? They’re a good club, though in a bad position at the moment.

“Look where Michael Appleton is gone from there, back in the Premier League, assistant manager with Leicester City.”

MILLWALL WILL bank a “six-figure fee” after their Championship clash with Fulham was brought forward for live coverage by Sky Sports.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 21 but will now kick-off at 7.45pm on Friday, April 20 for broadcast under The Den lights.

Some Lions fans expressed their frustration with the rescheduling, including one supporter from Groningen in Holland, who had booked flights and planned to bring his daughter to her first Millwall game.

Millwall explained that both clubs’ runs of form made the fixture an “attractive pick” for live coverage. The Lions and the Cottagers currently have the two longest unbeaten sequences in the Championship, and both will hope to still be in the running for promotion by the time the London derby comes around next month.

Matthieu Schreurs has been supporting Millwall for 24 years, and had arranged a trip for six people for the original date.

Matthieu and his group will instead attend Fisher’s league game against SC Thamesmead in Rotherhithe on April 21, and hope to still visit The Den, after telling the News it was “love at first sight” when he first experienced the stadium more than two decades ago.

“Visiting grounds was the main

goal. At that time Millwall wasn’t known to me at all and transport to the stadium was even worse than now,” Matthieu explained. “I ended up in a taxi that was driven by a Millwall fan.

“He took me to The Den for free and at the ground they gave me a complete private tour. When I was ready the taxi driver was still waiting for me and took me to the nearest station for free again.

“You can call this love at first sight.

“My daughter was sick for almost three years and could not fly. We can’t make the game now due to work and school. We will still go but without seeing a game.”

The six-figure sum Millwall will receive is the standard payment to Championship clubs for home games broadcast by Sky. Sky originally proposed April 22

as a new date, before Millwall pointed out that was the same day as the London Marathon.

A Millwall spokesman explained: “The club’s current run of form, as well as Fulham’s, and that the result of the game – a London derby – could have a significant impact on the battle for a play-off place, made it an attractive pick for live coverage on Sky Sports.

“Their decision to select this game, and subsequently bring it forward into an appropriate television slot on the Friday night, is worth a six-figure fee to the club.

“That money, plus Sky’s significant contribution to the central pot for clubs across The EFL, is crucial for commercial growth which in turn assists with continued success on and off the pitch.”

The Lions are unbeaten in twelve Championship games after last Saturday’s 2-0 win at Barnsley, their sixth successive league win away from home.

Millwall have seven players away on international duty, including Australian duo James Meredith and Tim Cahill in action against Colombia at Fulham’s Craven Cottage on March 27.

Millwall face Nottingham Forest at The Den on March 30, before travelling to Ipswich the following Monday.

Harris says Millwall are prepared for the break, and it could also provide benefits.

“With the momentum we’ve got at the moment we’d rather go and play games than have time off,” Harris said. “However, we have four or five players that have been struggling with knocks and carrying knocks within the squad. They do need a period of rest.

“It can benefit us. We have to use the time wisely in terms of training, keeping up fitness levels and recovery.

“We know about the international breaks, we’re geared up for them for some time and have set training patterns for a long time.

“We can relax this week and then start up again. I’m not worried about an international break, it’ll be good for us.

“We’re coming back to face Forest and Ipswich, two massive games for us. It will be straight back looking forward to them.”
