COUNCIL bosses are looking at ways to secure public ownership of Dulwich Hamlet FC’s ground amid fears they face eviction by their owner at the end of the season.

In extraordinary developments this week, the club claimed it was slapped with a backdated bill of £121,000 in rent, served notice on its licence to play at the ground, and banned from using its own name

and initials in a trademark dispute with developer Meadow Residential LLP. Southwark Council leader Peter John and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan have sent a joint letter to Meadow, saying the local authority is keen to buy the freehold to the Champion Hill site at market rate.

As the News went to press, Meadow said it would be handing over the trademark to the supporters’ club and submitted proposals to try to find a way to break the deadlock. See page 8

No winners in row over Dulwich Hamlet FC

T

HE BREAKDOWN in relations between Dulwich Hamlet Football Club, the owners of the ground and Southwark Council are playing out for all to see.

This current situation puts in doubt the future of Dulwich Hamlet, which is believed to be the oldest non-league club in the country, with the largest attendance in its league. Yet Meadow Residential LLP, the property investment fund that owns the stadium, are arguably in just as dire a predicament. Their decision to inform the club that they could no longer use their own name or initials, on top of handing them a bill for back rent of £121,000, is certainly a home goal on the public relations front.

Its history, popularity and the part the club plays in the local community makes this a hot topic for the council, who have a moral and real duty to ensure Dulwich Hamlet FC continues to thrive. Indeed, Council Leader Peter John has been strong in defence of the club, but the tweets from him and other supporters have reportedly led Meadow to justify their ban on the use of the name, claiming the DHFC trademark late last year.

Bringing England’s former captain and local legend Rio Ferdinand in with a £10 million bid to save the club was a stroke of genius. This should have been the decider, but it was rejected by Meadow and now the council might be left with no other option but to bring out its red card - a compulsory purchase order.

It’s time for all parties to sit down and try to find a solution here - before the final whistle is blown on either Meadow’s ownership of the ground or the club’s presence in Champion Hill.

Two mutts rescued after storm Irma find a home in the UK EXCLUSIVE

TWO DOGS rescued after Hurricane Irma wreaked devastation in the Caribbean have found their forever home in East Dulwich.

Ziggy and Star were seen wandering on the island of Antigua in December, alone and hungry by the side of the road, months after last year’s hurricane.

Star was described as ‘a wreck’ who was thought to be close to death as she could barely stand.

Both dogs were so thin their rescuers were too distressed to photograph their pitiful condition. But now they are thriving after being rehomed with Loraine Rutt and her husband Steve Tomkinson, with support from TV vet Rory Cowlam (pictured below), who appears on CBBC’s ‘The Pets Factor’.

After giving the dogs a routine checkup last week, Mr Cowlam told the News: “It’s amazing how loving the two of them are after everything they’ve been through.

“They are looking healthier every time I see them. They are going to be awesome pets for two truly incredible owners.”

Ms Rutt, who has lived in Peckham and East Dulwich for 30 years, explained: “Both our previous dogs, who passed away a couple of years ago, were rescue dogs. I had intended to rehome from Battersea or Dogs Trust this January.

“My sister, who lives on St Maarten, another Caribbean island hit hard by the hurricane, sent me a photo with the caption 'This brother and sister need a home' and my heart melted.

“A woman named Andrea, who had taken the dogs in and fostered them on Antigua, was putting out a plea on Facebook for help finding them a safe new home.

“One of the dogs, Star, wouldn't have made it if a couple from Manchester, who

first spotted them, hadn't driven 45 minutes out of their way every day on their holiday to feed them.

“Knowing what my sister had gone through with Hurricane Irma I felt compelled to help.

“The house my sister was sheltering in with three other people, four dogs, and two cats, was blown apart by the hurricane. It lost the roof early on and they all huddled on the bathroom floor under a rug for eight hours, being battered by 180-mile-an-hour winds.

“I can't imagine how these pups, who

would have been six months old, managed to survive outside.

“The dogs are adorable, and they love everyone, and my husband Steve and I can't believe our luck.

“They're really bright, and have settled in amazingly well, though they weren’t big fans of the snow!

“Unsurprisingly, they do have a bit of post-traumatic stress. When the wind picks up Star sits and trembles.

“The paperwork to bring them over was similar to pet passport, but had to be done locally.

“We are so grateful to Andrea who fostered them and did all the necessary veterinary stuff and generously sponsored a big chunk of the transport costs. The local charity Dogs and Cats of Antigua were also really generous.

“They usually rehome to USA and Canada, but helped with the flight crates and also a chunk of the flight costs.

“When we picked them up at Gatwick’s animal reception they greeted us like long lost friends, it was amazing.

“We now realise they greet everyone the same way - especially Rory!

A MILLWALL fan who ran the Big Half in a West Ham shirt to raise money for young cancer sufferer Isla Caton has almost trebled his target.

Jamie Pearce, 25, bravely donned the Hammers’ colours on Sunday as he ran 13.1 miles, passing through the streets of Southwark in the first ever Vitality Big Half.

The runner’s initial aim had been to raise £500 for three-year-old Hammers fan Isla Caton who suffers from rare childhood cancer neuroblastoma and needs specialist treatment in America.

But a quick check of his sponsorship page after the race on Sunday revealed he had almost trebled his original target by so far raising £1,250.

Speaking to the News after the race, Jamie, a young father himself, said: “It went really well – although I had a sickness bug Friday night. So Saturday morning I was so tired and had nothing in me, so I spent the whole day trying to refuel and went for pie and mash and then to Millwall.

“I went to the race on Sunday morning and felt quite good about it – I didn’t struggle until towards the end and it was probably my favourite race.”

“As I went through east London with the shirt on all I was getting was shouts of ‘West Ham’ and ‘up the Hammers’ and I made sure I shouted out ‘I’m Millwall’ and pointed to my back,” he added.

“There were lots of people who realised I was the lad running it in the West Ham shirt and they were cheering me on. Going through Bermondsey, a lot of people had retweeted so I got a chant the whole way through and I was joining in with that. It was great.

“It was amazing the amount of support and good will I got from everybody on Twitter and it’s been fun – I’ve had a lot of banter.

“On the Big Half records I did it in 2hrs 16mins but on my watch the running time was 1hr 53mins so it was a good time and was a PB on a race for me.”

“He fought so hard and he did everything he could to make it past Christmas and New Year so we could be together as a family.”

Joanie said that, until Reg became sick, he never missed a home game at The Den. “Tuesday nights and Saturdays he would be there, FA cups, Wembley

countless times and he travelled all over the country miles and miles,” she said.

“There’s not a piece of clothing in our house that was not Millwall – even his socks.

“He was a Millwall supporter until the very end.

“Dad was a family man but he was also funny and stubborn and strong-willed,” she added.

“He was just a really great guy - if you needed something he would do it.”

Reg, who was a painter and decorator by trade and lived in Grove Park, Lewisham, leaves behind his partner Julie Butler, 54, children Vicky, 28, Joanie, 24, Robert, 22, and Geri, 20, and one-year-old grandson Riley.

He will be buried in his favourite Millwall shirt at his funeral next Wednesday, March 14.

The new Southwark Presents Card was launched at Canada Water Library on March 1, with Southwark-based comedian Jenny Eclair joining the celebrations.

MILLWALL FANS will hold a minute’s applause at Saturday’s match in memory of a life-long supporter who has died from cancer.

Fans are expected to put their hands together in the 50th minute of the game against Brentwood this weekend in honour of the 50 years Reg Day spent supporting Millwall.

The 61-year-old, who first began following the club as a child after his parents spent time living near The Den, sadly died in hospital on Monday, February 26, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer last summer.

A TUBE station could be built at the Bricklayers Arms, transport bosses have confirmed.

Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed it is considering the roundabout as a potential site for a station as part of the Bakerloo Line extension.

If a station is built at the site, it will be the third new station in addition to two others already proposed for the Old Kent Road.

In its initial response to issues raised in a public consultation on the extension, TfL said it was working with the council to “reassess the case [for a station at Bricklayers Arms] based on the new proposals in the draft Old Kent Road Area Action Plan”.

It will be seen as a step in the right direction for campaigners, who have fought for a third station to be built at the site instead of just the 25 metre-high ventilation shaft proposed in the £3billion extension plans.

signatures in support of the Bricklayers Arms station from Southwark Liberal Democrats and another with 2,214 names from Tower Bridge Road Alliance.

Bermondsey Street Area Partnership and Bricklayers Arms Tenants’ and Residents’ Association were also involved in organising a rally with the groups back in November.

Suhel Ahmed, chair of Tower Bridge Road Alliance and owner of restaurant Tower Tandoori, told the News: “I think it’s really positive that TfL are now considering the Bricklayers Arms as a site but it should have been an actual option in our option.

“I hope TfL and the Mayor of London will see this would bring a huge amount of benefit to the area despite the cost.

“However, we are still uncertain in terms of what’s going to happen next and whether the Bricklayers Arms will be in the next consultation.”

HOMES IN Herne Hill and East Dulwich have been left without water for days as the freezing weather burst pipes across London.

Thames Water said it was having to pump an extra 500 million litres of water – the equivalent of 200 Olympic swimming pools - through its network to meet demand, and was handing out free water bottles.

Steven Govier, from Dulwich Estate, told the News he had been without water since March, 3 and had spent more than three hours on hold trying to report the issue before receiving an email response after 11pm on Sunday.

Dulwich and West Norwood MP, Helen Hayes, said: “My constituents have been affected by Thames Water leaks or bursts every single week this winter, so the likelihood of a major problem could have been predicted and robust plans should have been in place.

“It is completely unacceptable that, faced with no water supply, residents and businesses have been unable to contact Thames Water by phone or via their website, and that the distribution of bottled water has been delayed, patchy and disorganised.

“It is now essential that compensation is paid to all households who have been without water, and that government reforms the water industry to make it fit for purpose.”

In its latest draft of the Old Kent Road area action plan, Southwark Council said it was “committed to a third station at Bricklayers Arms” and would “carry out further master planning once the station locations are confirmed”.

If a decision is made to go forward with the extension, and the funding needed is secured, construction could start in 2023 with services running by about 2028/29.

A BLOGGER from Peckham is promoting a healthy body image by starting a campaign in praise of ‘saggy’ breasts.

Chidera Eggerue’s #SaggyBoobsMatter movement sees the blogger and MOBO awards presenter share self-portraits on Instagram, often without wearing a bra under her clothes, to highlight that boobs come in all shapes and sizes.

The 23-year-old says: “I started the #SaggyBoobsMatter movement because women are taught, from the moment of birth, that their value is attached to how likeable they are to men.

“We are taught that we need to be ‘saved’ by men and that only the ‘pretty’ ones end up with the charming prince.

“Sagging of the breasts is normally a feature associated with older women, so any signifier of ageing is instantly met with shame and this is pretty much how we have young women living in bodies they are at war with.

“But through this movement, we can reclaim our bodies by celebrating them without seeking anybody’s permission.

“Celebration begins with self-praise.

It doesn’t matter if you do it online or in the mirror or on the bus; what matters is that you are admiring the beautiful existence that you are.

“Your body fights tooth and nail every single day to keep you alive without you even noticing!”

Ms Eggerue has become one of south-east London’s rising stars after being a MOBO award presenter in 2017, and featuring as the only Brit on Buzzfeed’s ’30 black girls you should follow on Instagram list’.

She says growing up in Peckham has been a big influence on her activism, telling the News: “I’m from Peckham Rye and have lived there my entire life.

“Growing up in Peckham has influenced my identity in a multitude of ways but what always comes to mind when I think about Peckham is the fact that I’m surrounded by so many people who look like me.

“Black people are amazing and it feels awesome to be part of a community filled with people of a similar cultural background to me.

“There are a lot of Nigerian people living in Peckham - in fact, Peckham (before it became gentrified) used to be called ‘Little Lagos’.

“Feeling represented allowed me to feel a lot more comfortable and that comfort allowed my bold voice to grow.

Ms Eggerue has also written her first

book, What a Time to Be Alone, due to come out later in the year.

She says: “This book is a collection of poetic Igbo sayings including my own original artwork combined into one volume, along with short essays on everything from bad friends to being loved, making it the perfect handbook for modern life.

She says her mum is a big source of inspiration: “My mother has always taught me that you speak your outcome.

“Watching her live boldly and proudly is what encouraged me to live my life without limits.

“She taught me to never believe anybody is a better person than me, and that anytime I enter a room, I should walk with confidence and speak like I deserve to be heard.

“If I didn’t have my mother in my life, I would most definitely not have the strength of character I have now.

“As much as I don’t like to attach a woman’s strength to her ability to endure pain, my mother is the strongest woman that exists in my life and as a black woman, I feel blessed to have been nurtured by a mother who is so proud of her heritage.”

CHILDREN AT nurseries and schools in Southwark got a special visit from publisher Penguin Random House on World Book Day.

The publisher’s staff delivered interactive sessions with storytelling for children aged up to five, interactive quizzes for primary school pupils, and careers workshops with sixth form students considering a career in publishing at ten nurseries and schools across Southwark.

The official message for this year’s World Book Day on March 1 was ‘share a story’.

Penguin also gifted about 4,000 books through book prizes and donations to the schools it visited across London, including Burgess Park Community Nursery, Grove Nursery School, Kintore Way Nursery School, Bellenden Primary School, and Hollydale Primary School in Southwark.

A spokesperson for Grove Nursery School in Peckham said: “It is really important that we regularly read and share stories with young children.

“World Book day provides a wonderful opportunity to bring stories to life and the staff and children have made a fantastic effort to bring their favourite story characters to life through dressing up today.”

Burgess Park Community Nursery said: “This means a lot to us as it supports our pedagogical approach to literacy; our aim is for all our children to become confident talkers so they will be able to be confident readers.

“Parents reading with their children is key to their children's success.”

Farhana Sultana, assistant headteacher at Hollydale Primary School, added: “Our children love stories, they love adventures, and most of all they love to talk about books and ask questions.

“Books are freedom bound within paper walls so World Book Day for us is about letting children discover books while highlighting that books are still important in our 21st century.”

Hamlet were ‘banned from using their own name’

COUNCIL bosses are looking at ways to secure public ownership of Dulwich Hamlet FC’s ground amid fears they face eviction by their owner at the end of the season.

Southwark Council leader Peter John and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan have sent a joint letter to owner Meadow Residential LLP, saying the local authority is keen to buy the freehold to the Champion Hill site at market rate.

A report due to be discussed at a cabinet meeting this Tuesday, March 13, also sets out the council’s plans to explore its powers for acquiring the site in other ways – including by compulsory purchase order.

It comes after the 125-year-old club claimed it was served notice on its licence to play at the ground by Meadow on Monday and also received a £121,000 bill for backdated rent.

Meadow bought the site in 2014 with the intention of regenerating the land for new homes, but their plans were rejected by the council in October for various reasons, including a lack of affordable homes.

And this week the club’s Twitter account Tweeted a letter it said was sent by lawyers on behalf of Greendales IP LLC, a subsidiary of Meadow, stating that the company

became the owner of the trademarks Dulwich Hamlet Football Club, The Hamlet, and DHFC in October 2017.

The club, which has been at its current home since 1912, had been told in the letter it could no longer use the trademarks “in any printed literature and any online activity including websites and Twitter”.

Meadow said on Wednesday it was transferring the trademarks to the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust.

Dulwich Hamlet FC said in a statement on Tuesday: “Yesterday [Monday] evening, the club were served notice that our licence to play at Champion Hill would be terminated immediately.

“We are consulting with solicitors on the matter, as we feel they do not have legal grounds to serve such a notice.

“This comes on top on the £121,000 ‘back rent’ bill we were served last week.”

In a report for Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, Councillor Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said the council planned to “acquire” the freehold of the Champion Hill site to secure the longterm future of Greendale and Dulwich Hamlet and also build new council homes.

He added that the council had no intention of redeveloping the stadium or pitch for residential purposes and that Dulwich Hamlet had informed the council there was “limited prospect” of the club being allowed to use the stadium after the end of this season.

Councillor Peter John, leader of Southwark Council, said in a statement: “Southwark Council is bold in its plans to build thousands of new council homes, and we are constantly on the lookout for potential sites for new homes.

A resident on the Kirby Estate spotted the abandoned vehicle on Monday morning and called the police after driving past the scene earlier in the day.

Speaking to the News, the resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I had to go to Tesco at Surrey Quays so I came past at about 9.4510am and the roads were open and all I saw was a fire engine, police car and ambulance. When I came home at about 10.15am, parking spaces on our estate are very hard to come by and I noticed a car I didn’t recognise.

“Being nosey, I got out to see if there was a permit in the windscreen and that’s when I saw the windscreen was smashed and I thought it was involved in a hit and run so I rang the police and they confirmed it was the vehicle they were waiting to speak to the owner

of.”

“At about 4/4.30pm the police turned up and confirmed it was the vehicle that had been involved in the [incident] and they were going to get it removed for forensics,” he added.

“These officers didn’t leave until about 10.30pm – they didn’t let the vehicle go in case someone tried to take something from it I guess.”

A London Ambulance spokesperson said: "We were called at 8:51am yesterday (Monday), to Surrey Quays Station, Rotherhithe, to reports of a road traffic collision involving a car and a pedestrian.

“We sent an ambulance crew to the scene, and they conveyed a woman to a major trauma centre as a priority.”

“Over the past few days we have heard and listened to the concerns expressed by the Mayor of London, local MPs and the many fans who care about the Club. We remain willing to sit down with all parties to find a way forward.

“Our view is that is best achieved by: ! Southwark Council to agree a new lease with The Club of the AstroTurf at Greendales Playing Fields ! Southwark Council withdrawing its legal costs claim against DHFC Ltd. ! Meadow agreeing to allow the Club to operate from Champion Hill for the remainder of the season. ! Meadow transferring with immediate effect the ownership of the trade marks to DHST, ensuring that the fans properly own the name and can work with us, DHFC Ltd and Southwark Council to make the changes that are needed to secure its future. ! Southwark Council agreeing to approach any future planning applications respecting planning law, policy and accepted due process.

“Meadow's fundamental position has never changed. Meadow owns the Champion Hill site and wishes to develop it to provide much needed housing, including affordable housing, and a new stadium for The Club therefore securing its future at Champion Hill. With the support of Southwark Council, the community and ultimately the involvement of The Mayor of London, Meadow will do so.”

Police appeal after collision with pedestrian ROTHERHITHE

POLICE ARE appealing for witnesses after a car was found abandoned on an estate following a collision with a female pedestrian in Rotherhithe.

A blue Mercedes B200 Sport failed to stop following a collision shortly before 9am on Monday, March 5, near Surrey Quays station on Rotherhithe Old Road.

It was found abandoned later that same day on the Kirby Estate in Southwark Park Road with its windscreen smashed.

The 46-year-old woman injured in the collision was taken to a south London hospital by ambulance where she was said to remain in a serious but stable condition yesterday.

Campaigners vow to fight shopping centre plans over affordable homes

CAMPAIGNERS HAVE vowed to fight Elephant and Castle shopping centre regeneration plans, claiming developers backtracked on offering 116 homes at social rent.

Last month the News reported that Delancey had written to Southwark Council chief executive Eleanor Kelly outlining potential concessions, including 116 social rent homes and a box park for displaced traders, after residents objected to proposals during the public consultation.

But campaigners were disappointed when Delancey’s revised formal offer only included 74 homes at social rent. A further 42 are ‘pending resolution of grant funding and/or final viability review’.

At a public meeting held on March 3 at Newington Tenants’ and Residents’ Association Hall, groups including Latin Elephant and student activists from University of the Arts, London, vowed to continue applying pressure.

Councillor Maria Linforth-Hall told the News: “Traders have told me that they are not being given personal support to understand the relocation options

available to them from Delancey’s multilingual employees, who have been specially hired to do this.

“Instead, some said they have been referred back to the organisation Tree Shepherd with their enquiries. I am going to Delancey’s showroom this week to find out myself.

“The plans in their current forms still represent wholesale gentrification, with just 74 homes at social rents.

“This is an improvement from 33 out

of 979 submitted in the first plans, but less than the 116 Delancey have previously promised.”

A spokesperson from Delancey said: “We are committed to creating a thriving town centre in Elephant and Castle which will benefit the local and wider community, both now and in the future.

“Since the planning committee in January, we have worked hard to listen to concerns and had many fruitful conversations with local businesses, the

community, Ward Councillors and the London Borough of Southwark to find agreeable and financially viable resolutions.

“We committed to 35 per cent affordable housing, and increased the provision of social rented housing units to 74. We are looking at ways to increase this to 116 flats.

“It is anticipated that the flats will be delivered for the rental market and will go at least some way towards meeting

the capital’s chronic housing need.

“We have progressed a programme of face to face and group meetings with businesses to discuss relocation options.

“In addition to this, an independent business advisor (Tree Shepherd) has been appointed by the council to advise tenants on business development and support them in future planning.

“They have been in operation in unit 231 in the shopping centre since August 2017.

“We are providing 10 per cent affordable retail in the new town centre and are looking to provide temporary affordable retail space on Castle Square in the meantime, with priority given to existing independent traders.

“We will provide a relocation fund of £634,700 for Southwark Council to distribute.

“The Council is exploring opportunities to direct some of the Community Infrastructure Levy receipts from the scheme towards further assisting traders with relocation costs.”

Cinderella line campaign success

COMMUTERS TRAVELLING on the ‘Catford loop’ will soon benefit from more peak-hour trains after residents complained the service ran less frequently than in the 1950s.

The stretch between Nunhead and Ravensbourne is used by commuters going to Victoria and Blackfriars from Sevenoaks and Dover Priory. The section has six stops: Ravensbourne, Beckenham Hill, Bellingham, Catford, Crofton Park, Nunhead, Peckham Rye, and Denmark Hill.

Currently, the service only sees two trains an hour into central London – on a par with trains from Leeds to London, and the Eurostar.

Residents say there are 36% more passengers than just four years ago, and overcrowding is common on four-carriage trains.

According to campaigners, in 1956 there were 62 trains per day on the line, with 14-

per-hour in the morning peak period.

But by 2016, this was reduced to 39 trains each day, with only eight during morning peak hours.

Chris Brown, a trade union worker from Nunhead, told the News: “Morning peak time trains are absolutely packed. The journeys are really uncomfortable - I had to get off a train at Peckham Rye last week as it felt dangerously over-crowded.

“If you can't get on a train, or it's cancelled, then you've got a 30 minute wait for the next one and of course the next train is likely to be even more overcrowded.”

A long-running campaign to improve the stretch of track, nicknamed the ‘Cinderella line’ by residents, reaped success on Saturday.

At a public meeting, Thameslink announced a new timetable, coming into effect in May 2018. There will be two extra trains in the morning between 7-9pm and in the evening between 5-7pm.

Michael Salac, Chair of the ‘Cinderella line’ campaign, said: “Although this is what we initially campaigned for, this is only the start for us – once the new services are

running we want to ensure they are fit for passenger demand.”

Phil Hutchinson, Govia Thameslink Railway's head of strategic planning, confirmed Thameslink trains will double from two to four trains per hour throughout the day between Monday and Saturdays, with Sunday service improvements to be made at a later date.

He said: "We are pleased that our passengers on the Catford Loop will be among the first to benefit from RailPlan 20/20, our comprehensive, once-in-ageneration modernisation programme that is transforming rail services across our network.

“With its urgent need for more capacity this line has been one of our highest priorities; passengers will also enjoy new route opportunities along with better reliability and punctuality thanks to wholesale timetable and infrastructure improvements.

“We are very grateful to local passenger groups for their contributions to our consultation programme for these new services."

Frozen protest for Motor Neurone Disease sufferers

PEOPLE LIVING with terminal Motor Neurone Disease braved last week’s snow to protest against compulsory ‘work capability reassessments’ to receive their benefits.

Lorraine Sheahan, from Bermondsey, whose father died from the illness, joined last Wednesday’s demonstration outside parliament.

She said an estimated 600 people with the disease were being forced to complete reassessments to receive their employment support allowance.

former apprentice has been given a rare opportunity to swap places with the director of capital estates and facilities at Guy’s and St Thomas’. The job swap exercise, which sees apprentices and managers shadowing one another during National Apprenticeship Week (5-9 March), encourages managers at the Trust to consider employing apprentices to fill vacancies.

Louie Rogers is one of 258 apprentices employed by the Trust since its apprenticeship programme scheme began in 2012. Of those who completed their apprenticeship, 72% have gone on to get permanent or temporary jobs as a result of the programme.

Louie, 24, shadowed Alastair Gourlay, Director of Essentia, which is Guy’s and St Thomas’ capital, estates and facilities directorate. Mr Gourlay in turn spent time in the engineering workshops at St Thomas' to get a better understanding of how apprenticeships can help to develop staff.

Louie, who features in a recruitment film created by the Trust to showcase its apprenticeship programme, says: “When I tell people I’m an electrician in the NHS sometimes they think I’m a handyman. But what we do has a big impact on the way things run at our hospitals. It’s our job to control

Cancer survivor urges women to have a smear test

A 35 year old woman who received life-saving treatment at the Cancer Centre at Guy’s after being diagnosed with cervical cancer is reminding women to get regular smear tests and to visit their GP early if they experience signs of cervical cancer.

Around 3,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed in the UK each year but early detection and treatment can prevent 75% of cervical cancers developing.

Danielle Calabrese has a less common form of cervical cancer which develops in the glandular tissue (inner part) of the cervix. She was diagnosed after having a routine smear test in October 2015 and began her treatment at Guy's and St

She had a radical trachelectomy which removes the cervix, surrounding tissue and the upper part of the vagina, but leaves the womb in place. She went on to have a fertility preservation treatment (freezing of eggs), followed by chemotherapy, radiotherapy and brachytherapy.

Danielle, who is supported by the gynaecology oncology team at Guy’s and St Thomas’, says: “I can’t stress enough how important it is to go along to your GP for a smear test when you’re called or if something doesn’t feel right. It could save your life.”

Cold weather; warm response

L

AST WEEK we saw some of the coldest weather and deepest snowfall in London for eight years.

It meant some absolutely stunning pictures of Southwark in the snow – particularly Tower Bridge and Southwark Park!

However, the extreme cold makes life tougher for those unable to afford to turn up the heating, as well as some older people, disabled people and others. I put out a call to see if anyone unable to get out in the snow needed any help and was inundated with extra offers of assistance with shopping and other errands from other local people. My ears may have been cold this week, my heart has been warmed at such a positive community response!

The generosity and kindness of the public is simply not matched by the cold comfort offered by Government. Since the Coalition took office in 2010, homelessness has rocketed. Over 300,000 people now live in temporary accommodation and more than 8,000 people slept rough on London streets last year. Mayor Sadiq Khan opened up emergency shelters last week and it is reassuring to see community centres, churches, mosques and the staff and volunteers from The Robes Project and St Mungos all stepping in. The public will to tackle this problem is tremendous. Sadiq began fundraising for shelters in December and within a few weeks Londoners donated over £100,000. The Government has caused the problem but ignores potential solutions. With people freezing to death on our streets over the last couple of months, Ministers are culpable. I will continue to hold them to account, including through my Ending Homelessness Parliamentary Group.

As the snow has thawed, new problems have emerged in Southwark. People were left without water on the Silverlock Estate, Llewellyn Street and off Long Lane as well as huge swathes of other parts of Southwark. Thames Water seemed surprised that freezing water bursts pipes, but also failed to properly staff their helpline, leaving 7,000 Londoners without water or information on when problems will be fixed. It is unacceptable to leave people without this essential utility. I will be pursuing Thames Water further for a better service.

CINDERELLA LINE CAMPAIGN SUCCESS Compulsory purchase Unlock the key to a beating heart Halmet’s stadium CHAMPION HILL stadium, home to Dulwich Hamlet FC, should be compulsory purchased by the council.

This follows news that owners Meadow Residential have turned down a £10 million offer from former England captain Rio Ferdinand.

Rio and his consortium buying the ground would still be the ideal option. But otherwise the land, bought for £5.7 million five years ago, should qualify for a CPO under measures outlined in the Budget last November relating to unused land banks.

Any proposal by the council to buy the land would depend on the council building on the land, and there's no guarantee how much of the pitch they would take.

If the Labour council in Lewisham can seize Millwall land to give to Renewal, a controversial off-shore developer run by former council colleagues, then a Lib Dem Southwark could do the same in reverse and guarantee that Dulwich Hamlet can continue playing at its traditional home. I thanked [council leader] Peter John for refusing to let Meadow renew an out-of-date lease on Greenfield open space.

Now is the time to follow through and acquire the pitch as a community asset where Southwark's biggest club can continue to entertain crowds of 2,000 and more local fans.

As a councillor I defended the rights of black business owners who lost out. I was also a former chair of the club's Supporters’ Trust.

THERE IS a lot to be proud of since we were founded in 1961.

Seven in ten people now survive a heart attack; the idea of heart transplants is now a reality and the majority of babies born with congenital heart conditions now live on to adulthood.

Calling young writers The National Young Writers’ Awards is set to return with a bang as world renowned bestselling children’s author David Walliams has been named judge for 2018!

The competition, organised by tuition provider, Explore Learning which has a centre in Sidcup has been running for ten years and has inspired hundreds of thousands of children across the UK to put pen to paper and give writing a try.

A few minutes saves your life

LL WOMEN who are eligible for cervical screening – also known as a ‘smear test’ - should make an appointment when invited.

The reason for this is simple – it takes just a few minutes and it really could save your life.

Across London, there has been a worrying fall in the number of women attending their screening appointments.

In Southwark, just 64% of younger women (aged 25-49) who were invited for a smear test attended their appointment. This means that 36% did not. For women aged between 50 and 64, a total of 77% attended, which falls short of the target of 80%.

These figures represent a concerning number of women who did not receive this vital check which can detect cervical cancer in its early stages when it is treatable. Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women under 35, so it’s important that all women realise they are at risk.

It doesn’t matter if you have had the HPV vaccine, you still need to have cervical smear tests regularly.

Every year there are more than 3,000 new cases of cervical cancer and nearly 900 hundreds deaths in the UK. This is a tragedy, given that it is preventable.

Although a cervical smear test can be a bit uncomfortable, it can detect changes that could develop into cancer if left. If you're nervous about having it done for any reason, you could speak to your GP or practice nurse or take someone with you.

Don’t let embarrassment put you off - please have it done if it's due.

The cold had overwhelmed the theatre’s heating system but the show took no time at all to warm up and we were distracted from discomfort right from the powerful opening number.

The show follows the adventures of Emperor Charlemagne’s son as he seeks a ‘meaningful’ life. Along the way he samples all the things the world has to offer a young prince, vainglory in battle, easy sex, political power and domesticity. Nothing quite satisfies until the unexpected denouement.

Pippin might be the hero but the undoubted star of the show is Genevieve Nicole as the Leading Player. She is a huge force with a huge voice. Her acting range is as impressive as her vocals. She majors in insuperable sass but also minored completely convincingly in unexpected and touching brokenness when the story didn’t go her way.

Very reminiscent of The Witch in ‘Into the Woods’.

Pippin himself was charming enough but never quite convinced. The somewhat confusing combination of the early medieval history being played out in Victorian vaudeville style took a while to bed in. The first half was musically and choreographically impressive but

The artist recommends you try to see the artwork in the natural light of day in order to enjoy its full beauty.

As it began Rani (Sharon Singh) and Sita (Kiren Jogi) discussed men and love. Rani is ever the pessimist whilst her less prosperous and less educated cousin Sita is full of joy and passion. The energy from the start was infectious and continued throughout.

Kamala-ji (Goldy Notay) had arranged for a well to do young man Raj(Adam Samuel – Bal) to visit her daughter, Rani, with the prospect of marriage. Although Rani wants nothing to do with this she plots with her cousin Sita to change places so they can truly check out this potential suitor. Unbeknownst to Rani and Sita, a similar plan has been hatched by Raj and Nitin (Ronny Jhutti) and as businessman Raj takes the role of Nitin’s cab driver the chaos ensues. Nitin turns in an ultra-sleazy performance as Raj. Confused? Don’t worry it’s all slapstick and light hearted. And we mustn’t forget Sunny (Deven Modha) playing Rani’s brother, who gave some great comical moments.

Farcical, with a smattering of smutty double meanings, I was totally unprepared! Generally not my type of theatre, nevertheless I

laughed and appreciated how the cast kept the momentum going, with a few inventive nods to France too.

Initially Kiren Jogi captured my attention, however, Sharon Singh’s ability to effortlessly dip in and out of accents left an impression after the first act. Much of the action was performed to the audience, breaking the fourth wall and Singh was crisp and sharp at each turn to both cast and audience.

The addition of music and dance in several spots really worked for raising the spirits on what surely must have been one of the most bitter and snowy evenings to venture out! Bright, colourful, gaudy and bawdy, the pace and passion should keep your attention. Not my usual cup of chai – but something a little more hot and spicy!

But life often gets in the way of young plans and, as he continues, ‘After I left drama school, I didn't want to be an actor!’ The young man who grew up in North London then did ‘every job under the sun that you could think of that was possible in a theatre: admin, marketing, producing, fundraising, stage management, box office - You name it, I've done it!’ One day, though, Tristan realised the only theatre job he had not had a go at was writing ,so he gave up his full time job, got a part time job, and began to write a play.

His first attempt saw him renting a room above a pub, getting in five friends to read the play, then inviting fifty mates to come and watch it.

Several big successes later Bernays tells me he still has the fear of every writer, which is: ‘Oh God - I've made a huge mistake!’

His love-hate relationship with acting has never left. He tries to explain: ‘I love acting, but I don't love being an actor. Performing in front of a crowd, being part of a company, the liveness of

it - that's brilliant. But I hate waiting for auditions, feeling powerless and not being able to work all the time.’

He then balances this out with why he loves writing: ‘You are your own boss.

You control your time. You can write on your own in your room - you can't do that with acting. Writing is empowering.

The flip side is it's more solitary, but the great thing about being a playwright as opposed to a novelist is you get to work with a cast and a creative team. It's very social and full of life. Plus, most theatres have a bar so that always makes for fun times.’ Perhaps he could get Harry Hill to sort it out: I like writing but I also like acting… FIGHT!!!!!

Tristan’s latest play, Old Fools, a touching but humorous piece about Alzheimer’s was written after his grandfather had the disease. ‘My biggest fear about growing old is that the same may happen to me,’ he reveals, ‘I wrote Old Fools to confront this fear head on.’

I asked if it was difficult to write.

‘Funnily enough, it wasn't hard with regards to the illness. In fact, it was nice - revisiting old family memories and whatnot. That was surprisingly fun.’ He added, ‘The hard thing about writing Old Fools was the emotional honesty.

My previous shows have had music and

live bands and even full scale battles with people zip-lining over the audience's head. There's lots to dazzle and distract the audience. In Old Fools, there's just two actors and dialogue nowhere to hide. It can be very scary to be that emotionally honest in front of an audience without the occasional sword fight to hide behind.’

Old Fools will get its world premiere at Southwark Playhouse, 77-85 Newington Causeway, SE1 6BD from Wednesday 14 March - Saturday 7 April.

Influential women

We look at pioneering females on International Women’s Day

The day has been observed since the early 1900s and can be traced back to 1908 when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding voting rights and better pay and working hours.

In 1910, Clara Zetkin – leader of the women’s office for the Social Democratic Party in Germany – tabled the idea of an International Women’s Day. It was celebrated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland the following year on March 19.

It was later proposed the date be moved to March 8 and it has been marked on this day ever since.

2018 also marks 100 years since some women – those aged over 30 who owned property – were given the right to vote in the UK. To commemorate International Women’s Day, the News has taken a look at some of the work of pioneering women in Southwark…

Mary Potter

Mary Potter was born in Old Jamaica Road, Bermondsey, on November 22, 1847, and died in Rome on April 9, 1913.

Mary saw the need of the sick poor and in particular the lonely and dying people in Southwark when she was young.

She founded the Little Company of Mary in Nottingham in 1877, and asked her sisters to constantly pray for the dying and care for the dying.

They still do this today.

Ada Salter

Ada Salter was the first female councillor to be elected in Bermondsey in 1909 and in 1920 was elected mayor of the area, making her the first female mayor in the capital.

Ada was born in Northamptonshire in 1866 but it was when she moved to Bermondsey at the age of 31 that she made a name for herself.

She insisted on living among the poor in Southwark’s slums and was

oday marks International Women’s Day – the annual worldwide event celebrating how far women have come in society, politics and economics over the years, while also continuing to call for gender parity, writes Chiara Giordano...

EACH YEAR since 2003 local people have been voting for the people, events and places they have felt worthy of a blue plaque.

a key figure in the Bermondsey Uprising which saw thousands of women march against appalling pay and working conditions in Bermondsey’s and Rotherhithe’s factories.

Ada was also known for her beautification campaign which saw her plant thousands of trees and bring parks and playgrounds to the streets of Bermondsey.

Octavia Hill

Octavia Hill, born in Cambridgeshire in 1838, is probably best known for cofounding the National Trust with Robert Hunter and Hardwicke Rawnsley.

During her lifetime, Octavia was also a driving force in developing social housing, including in Southwark, and formed the Horace Street Trust which became a model for many other housing associations.

In 1859, Octavia also created the Southwark detachment of the Army Cadet Force.

There is a blue plaque in recognition of Octavia’s work in Red Cross Garden, in Borough.

Enid Blyton

Enid Blyton was born in East Dulwich in August 1897 before her family later moved to Beckenham, in Kent.

She was a popular children’s author best remembered today for Noddy, Famous Five, and Secret Seven.

Her first book, Child Whispers, a slim volume of poetry, was published in 1922, and in 1925 her first full-length novel, The Enid Blyton Book of Bunnies, was published. Altogether, Enid Blyton is believed to have written around 700 books, as well as magazines, articles and poems.

Grace Kimmins

Dame Grace Kimmins, born in Sussex in 1870, is probably best known for Chailey Heritage – a special school set up in Sussex in 1903 for physically disabled children.

But a large part of her early work was spent at the Bermondsey Settlement, run by the Reverend John Scott Lidgett, which changed the lives of many living in the area’s slums in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Despite meeting her husband Charles Kimmins and later moving to Chailey, Dame Grace’s work in Bermondsey spanned 40 years.

Eveline Lowe

Born in Rotherhithe, Eveline Lowe became a leading educationalist and in 1939 became the first woman to rule London as the elected chair of the London County Council.

She was also instrumental in the Bermondsey Uprising which saw thousands of factory workers strike over poor pay and working conditions.

From 1908, Eveline and Ada Salter

went round the factories in the area to see if they could get the workers to join the National Federation of Women Workers – Mary Macarthur’s women-only trade union.

Phyllis Pearsall

Phyllis Pearsall, born in 1906 in East Dulwich, created the A-Z road maps.

The artist walked 3,000 miles to create the A-Z of London which first went on sale in 1936.

She had the idea when she became lost while trying to find the homes of people she had been asked to paint. She was awarded an MBE for her work and died of cancer at the age of 89 on in August 1996.

A blue plaque sits outside the house where she was born in Court Lane Gardens in recognition of her work.

The scheme came about after the ‘News’ approached English Heritage to get more of our history recognised, only to be told that most of our buildings would not qualify as they were destroyed in the blitz and post war era.

Working in partnership with Southwark Heritage Association and Southwark Council, over 50 of our own blue plaques have been erected.

Jeannette Wilkinson

Jeannette Wilkinson was a trade unionist and suffragist born March 1841 in Long Lane, Bermondsey, although little is written about her.

She is believed to have been elected as secretary of the London Upholsteresses' Society, affiliated to the Women's Protective and Provident League, in 1875.

She is said to have represented her union at nine conferences of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), where she made numerous speeches on working conditions for women.

ometimes I get to the point where I’ve had enough of people serving me gravy and calling it jus. And I’m not bothered if lambs haven’t eaten dew-soaked grass in a Welsh valley, or even if the cod wasn’t hand-caught by mermaids off the west coast of Ireland and delivered to my plate by vegan virgins. Sometimes I just want to have a good lunch. So with that in mind I took Mum off to Terry’s Cafe where the sourcing they do is from Smithfield Market for meat, and Borough Market for fresh veg, writes Michael Holland.

Established in 1982 the family business is now run by the son, Austin, a dapper man who oversees proceedings and makes sure everyone is alright, even to the point of warming the butter up to make it more spreadable when he sees someone struggling.

Inside is like a curiosity shop, full of interesting bric-a-brac and vintage local photos adorning the walls.

Looking up, Mum said, ‘I bet I’m there somewhere.’ And she probably was, in an old Beano photo or street party commemorating the end of the war. The tablecloths are rudimentary plastic gingham that add to the cafe’s intrinsic charm; on each table is Non-brewed condiment from Manze’s; the atmosphere can be described as ‘buzz and banter’ with mine host swapping jokes with the regulars and offering a friendly face to others; the music, one of the cafe’s attractions, was Billie Holiday singing about some man who had gone and done her wrong.

We considered the daily special(Lamb roast), and even watched some go by on trays, which almost lured me in, but I was looking for something else, something that I

would know I wanted as soon as I saw it on the menu And then I saw it: Ham, egg and chips. It just jumped right out at me, and this then persuaded Mum to favour something pig-based, too, because she chose the Gammon, pineapple, chips and peas.

After placing our order with one of the neatly uniformed staff there is much to look at: Mum was rather taken with the old boots and boxing gloves hung over the wall clock, while I liked the Union Jack teapot a couple at the next table were pouring from. I was also intrigued by the tea collection; Terry’s, it seems, is the only cafe that imports its own tea.

The website explains that after a teatasting trip to India they decided to bring their own over, and it is Terry’s Tea that you get served here. Plus, if you have your tea with food you can have as many refills as you like.

Before long, and just as I thought I recognised my Aunt Brenda in one of the photos, our dinners arrived.

You could tell straightaway that the chips were good; the eggs looked just about perfect, and I don’t need to hear that the ham came from a rare breed pig which had been sung

to sleep by dulcet-toned farmers every night, then massaged by former Chippendales every morning, to know it’s good, because my mum told me - without any fancy descriptions! ‘Ooh, that looks like a nice bit of ham, Michael,’ she said.

‘You can see it’s just been cut off the bone…’. And Mum’s opinion is all

the sourcing information I need to have ham, egg and chips. She was just as basic about her gammon: ‘The knife cuts through it like butter.’

Although the cafe is licensed, we finished off with cups of Terry’s own tea, which we knew was the perfect ending to a splendid lunch.

Club could be homeless – but defy odds to climb back to the top of the table

DESPITE ALL their worries off the pitch, Dulwich Hamlet scored one of their most remarkable wins on it on Tuesday night after defeating Billericay Town 3-1.

A brace from permanent new recruit Dipo Akinyemi and another goal from Nyren Clunis saw Dulwich come from behind to beat Glenn Tamplin’s bigspending Billericay.

It required a number of superb performances, not least from debutant stopper Cory Addaj, as Gavin Rose’s side went back to the top of the Bostick League Premier Division table, a point above Billericay.

Tuesday night’s opposition do have four games in hand, and are level on points with Folkestone Invicta in third and Margate in fourth in a cramped race for promotion to National League South.

But this will give Hamlet renewed belief, as they continue to somehow keep their promotion hopes on track despite problems that have nothing to do with Rose or his players.

Earlier on Tuesday, Hamlet were handed a £121,000 bill for rent by Meadow – the owners of their Champion Hill ground – and were told that the licence to play there was being terminated with immediate effect.

Remarkably, later in the day, the club revealed that a subsidiary of Meadow had registered their trademarks – meaning, technically, they were no

longer allowed to even use their own name.

Dulwich did use the hashtag DHFC on their Twitter account on Tuesday, and received widespread support, including from Millwall fan Danny Baker, who used some choice language to describe the property company and their lawyers.

Lambeth councillor for Labour Danny Adilypour added: “I fully support the proposal for [Southwark Council] to buy Champion Hill. Meadow are trying to drive [Dulwich Hamlet] out of the ground, meaning probable extinction.

They can’t be allowed to succeed.” He also used the DHFC hashtag.

Hamlet club chairman Liam Hickey later tweeted: “After the day we had I never wanted to be at football less but what a team and fans we have. This club is special and we will win.”

Given all that context it was a remarkable performance against a side that were seemingly going to race away with the title this season. To put into

context what Hamlet were up against, Billericay included in their line-up Calum Butcher, the midfielder who won promotion to the Championship with Burton in 2016 before making 43 appearances for Millwall last season, including one in the League One playoff final at Wembley.

They had also lost regular goalkeeper Preston Edwards to injury, meaning Addai stepped in between the posts and he produced a number of crucial saves with the hosts dominating for large spells.

And during the game they saw star attacker Reise Allassani suffer a rib injury that required lengthy treatment, but he was later able to walk out of the ground.

In front of almost 1,000 fans, including a sizeable away contingent, the visitors fell behind in just the ninth minute when Dean Inman fired home. It was threatening to be a long night after one of the longest and darkest days in the club’s

Addai kept Rose’s side in it at times and showed assured handling in difficult conditions at New Lodge, where the pitch was posing problems.

But Dulwich dug in, with Marc Weatherstone marshalling the defensive effort. Gradually they played their way back into the game, and got their reward two minutes before the break.

It was Tanasheh Abrahams who fired in a cross to the far stick, where Akinyemi rose to finish past Billericay stopper Alan Julian. The home side were stunned.

The goal had given Hamlet confidence, and it was they who were threatening to take the lead at the start of the second half. Julian was in action again when he saved from Akinyemi, but at the other end of the pitch Addai was still busy as he continued to deny the home side.

Hamlet suffered an injury blow when Allassani picked up an injury trying to

finish a cross from Clunis, and there was a long break in play before he was taken off.

Despite that, Hamlet attacked the hosts with renewed vigour, stretching them with the pace in their side.

With just seven minutes left, Clunis embarked on a run from halfway before he cleverly found Akinyemi who scored his second to send the away fans into raptures.

Billericay were given hope when the board went up from the fourth official to indicate seventeen minutes of injurytime. They piled forward, but Addai was making everything stick as his side hung on to their lead.

And, incredibly, in the 101st minute, Hamlet got a third, the superb Clunis cutting inside a covering defender and taking the ball around Julian to score.

It was Hamlet’s first win in seven league games, and maybe their most important of the season.

Unfortunately, the drama involving a property company and their lawyers, Southwark Council and the club away from the pitch might not have as happy an ending.

In a statement on Tuesday, Hamlet said: “[Monday] evening, the club were served notice that our license to play at Champion Hill would be terminated immediately.

“We are consulting with solicitors on the matter, as we feel they do not have legal grounds to serve such a notice.

“This comes on top on the £121,000 ‘back rent’ bill we were served last week.

Meadow have not been in touch with the club directly, and have only communicated through their solicitors.

This seems to be their preferred method.

We urge Andrew McDaniel and Peter Bennison to try and act with some level of courtesy moving forward, as this tact will get them nowhere.

“We will release another statement ASAP, and urge all fans to back the team at the next two away games: [Tuesday] at Billericay, and Saturday at Brightlingsea.”

Camberwell school set for table tennis nationals

THE UNDER-13 Girls and under-13 Boys table tennis teams from Sacred Heart Catholic School from Caberwell will represent London at the Table Tennis England National Finals in Leicester on March 10.

Both teams won at the county, zone, and regional rounds, and are now in with the chance to be crowned national champions.

The table tennis programme at Sacred Heart School is delivered by sportsmentoring charity Greenhouse Sports and is funded by players of the People's Postcode Lottery.

Their Greenhouse Sports coach, Daniel Basterfield, is a former English national champion who was once a participant at the Greenhouse Sports programme at his school in north-west London.

He said: “These young people have only been playing table tennis for a year and a half, so it is a testament to their dedication and perseverance that they will compete for the championships at this national table tennis competition."

London-based charity Greenhouse Sports places coaches full-time in schools, where they deliver extra-curricular sports coaching and mentoring programmes.

Working in over 50 schools across the capital, the charity focuses predominantly on delivering programmes in areas of high deprivation.

Research conducted by Loughborough University into Greenhouse Sports has shown that engagement with the charity's programmes increases attendance, academic performance, and achieves positive behavioural change in young people.

John Herriman, Chief Executive of Greenhouse Sports, added: "Many of our coaches like Daniel excelled at a national and international level in their sport before qualifying as coaches, meaning they have significant experience to share with their young people.

“But our focus is not only competitive.

Our coaches' main focus is on using sport to help young people develop the life skills

that can help them succeed in whatever challenges they take on in later life."

ince Millwall Community Trust was established in 1985 the Trust have been committed to engagement work with local young people and the police. Strong relationships of mutual trust between police agencies and the communities they serve are critical to maintaining public safety and effective policing.

On Wednesday the 24th January the trust Community Development and Education departments in partnership with Youth United, and the MPS held it’s ‘What’s Your Goal 2’ event which was a follow up to the first event held in 2017.

The day was about breaking down barriers, challenging stereotypes, and educating the young people within our communities. The Pupil Referral Units, Special Educational Needs provisions and schools in attendance on the day were; Southwark Inclusive Learning Service (KS3 & KS4), Cavendish School, Bacons College and City of London Academy Bermondsey.

Millwall Community Trust, Youth United, and the MPS saw the opportunity to deliver a day of education, football, and community cohesion. Workshops on consequences of gang related activity by Trident, role reversal with young people in Stop and Search procedures and responsibilities by TSG (Territorial Support Group), inspirational speaker Paul Hannaford spoke on lifestyle choices and the Police Dogs Unit provided young people with an interactive presentation on the work they do with dogs to help solve and prevent crime.

Paul Hannaford, who has worked with football clubs across the country and is a big supporter of the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme detailed his early years as a prolific offender, drug addict, and gang member, Paul used images, videos, and physical scars to show his life experiences to all in front of him.

Paul is a real-life example of change, reinforcing his message across the country to thousands that a life of crime, drugs, and violence isn’t a positive or productive way to live your life.

The young people and teaches found Paul to be truly inspirational. Jason Dornelly, a teacher at Cavendish school said on Paul Hannaford’s workshop: “The work shop that really caught and captured but students and staff was that of inspirational speaker Paul. He came with really good hard, hitting facts.”

After the morning workshops the young people were treated to lunch courtesy of Love Grub Coffee & Juice Gallery based in the Millwall Community Trust Lions Centre. After lunch all young people from all four schools took

Millwall Community Development Officer Gary Otim commented: “This was the second year of us running the What’s Your Goal event and it was a great day for all involved. The young people were engaged throughout the workshops which were all interactive, informative and relevant to the young people of today. The afternoon saw them representing their respective schools in the tournament ran by

the Millwall Premier League Kicks team. The tournament went smoothly with a vast amount of skills and commitment on display.

It’s great that the power of football can bring many different types of people together in an environment where they can all learn and enjoy themselves.”

On Tuesday 13th February Arsenal in the Communities’ Premier League Kicks programme hosted a 6-a-side Premier League Kicks tournament held at Market Road in North London for 16-18-yearold. The day saw other Kicks clubs from across London travel to take part in the half term football festival. Eight young people from the Millwall Premier League Kicks session in Bellingham were selected to attend and were accompanied by their coaches from the session which runs every Friday night from 6-9pm at the Bellingham Leisure and Lifestyle centre in Catford.

One of the young people in attendance of the day was quoted as saying” We really enjoyed the

day. It was great to travel out of South London and into another part of the city. It was well ran and we loved wearing the Millwall kit.

We would love to do something similar again.

GEORGE SAVILLE’S time at Brentford was “fantastic” – but he is gunning to get one over on them at The Den this weekend.

Saville played 44 times on loan at Brentford from Chelsea in 2013-14, performing a key role as Mark Warburton’s side won promotion to the Championship.

Millwall lost 1-0 to Brentford earlier this season in controversial fashion, the whistle blowing for a penalty just as Lee Gregory fired the ball home, before the striker then missed the spot-kick.

Saville enjoyed his time at the Bees, after a previous loan spell at Millwall.

“My first real taste of a full season was Brentford,” he said. “I needed regular game time, so I sat and thought playing for a good League One side was the best option. Brentford ticked the boxes, the style of play was a big one for me, playing out from the back.

That’s what I had learned at Chelsea. It was them or Leyton Orient, so I think we chose wisely.

“It was a fantastic season for me.

“It was an unlucky defeat when we lost to them earlier this season, nothing really went our way that day. There was the penalty and that goal that wasn’t.

“It’s a little bit like Burton, when they beat us and there was a sending-off.

There was no way we were going to lose to them again.

“We have that in the back of our minds and we want to put in a good performance. When we play at home that normally means we take something out of the game.”

Saville’s time at Brentford also made him realise he wanted to experience regular first-team football.

He had come through the youth system at Chelsea, being coached in the first-team squad by Roberto di Matteo – who had guided them to a Champions League triumph in 2012 – and former Liverpool boss and European Cupwinning Rafa Benitez.

Saville was part of the squad that travelled to Yokohama, Japan, for the World Club Cup final in 2012, a 1-0 defeat to Brazil’s Corinthians.

Saville, 24, emphasises there are different routes into professional football, and would advise young players not to get downhearted if they are not currently playing.

Such is the competitive nature of Millwall’s squad currently, Ben Thompson, Harry Toffolo and Shane Ferguson have recently been left out of the match-day eighteen.

Saville’s grounding at Chelsea was crucial to his development and understanding the ups and downs of football.

“It was unreal, being able to travel around the world, different places, different experiences in massive competitions. I absolutely loved it,” he said.

“Di Matteo was brilliant with me, he gave me confidence and support. On the training pitch he was excellent.

“Benitez was good as well. He had his own ways, and tactically he was fantastic. It was a great learning experience, though you probably don’t take it in at the time. But now, looking back, it’s experience I can use going

“I’m quite a realistic person. I knew I was never going go to make it at Chelsea. Obviously it was the dream.

Coming through such a competitive environment at one of Europe’s biggest clubs also honed a competitive edge, though he admits he sometimes needs to “rein it in a bit”, especially when referees are involved.

“The position I play in I’m near the referee a lot, so often talk to him,” Saville explained. “The manager likes leaders out there, people that will be vocal. I like the role I have and I think it’s the passion coming through as well, I get so into the game.

“I do get frustrated and sometimes I do lose my temper. But that’s part of my game, I’m determined across the pitch. I could rein it in a bit sometimes.

“I can switch off from football sometimes, but after games, no way, I can’t sit still. After a night game I won’t go to bed. You think about it so much and the adrenaline is still pumping. You

can’t not think about it. When you’re winning it’s great and you’re thinking about the next game.”

Millwall will achieve their main aim of consolidation in the Championship for next season, when they will hope to recruit well and further establish themselves and potentially push towards the play-offs.

Saville never thought this season would be a relegation battle, before he decided to join on a permanent deal from Wolves. “I didn’t think like that, that’s a bit negative. I thought it would be a great opportunity to go and express myself. I’d been here before, I know the place and the club means something to me as well, which is a big thing.

“I wanted to come and prove myself, that I was good enough for this level.

The recruitment that they’ve done has been great and I think we’ve got a really good squad at the moment.”

IT’S THE question that won’t go away and performances like the one on Tuesday night will only mean it is asked more frequently: Can Millwall sustain a promotion challenge?

For the first time, Neil Harris admitted it could be on. That was probably partly because the Lions face Brentford on Saturday, a side regularly mentioned as candidates for the top six.

Yet a win for Millwall this weekend would see them move two points ahead of their London rivals, and if other results go their way it could bring the prospect of the top six tantalisingly into view.

Millwall have raced past their points targets since New Year’s Day, when defeat at Norwich left them on 30.

They are unbeaten in the league since then, hitting the 40-point barrier Harris had earmarked, and now through 50.

Seventeen points from seven games since

the start of February is the kind of form if sustained will mean the question is, well, not out of the question.

The Lions are riding the crest of a wave, the Tigers their latest victims. Millwall went for the kill quickly, George Saville netting after 50 seconds before Jake Cooper added a second in the 33rd minute.

Hull pulled a goal back eleven minutes from time through Abel Hernandez, but there was no panic as Millwall calmly worked the ball back up the pitch and kept it there, taking their time over throwins and frustrating the home players and fans.

And who was up there in those closing moments proving nuisances, niggling opponents and generally just being as annoying as possible? Steve Morison and Tim Cahill, old heads and old legs kept in reserve to help see the game out.

NEIL HARRIS doesn’t expect Brentford to adopt the same approach as Sunderland last week and sit off his side when the London clubs clash on Saturday.

And he probably reminded Fred Onyedinma afterwards that he was free in the box waiting to tap into an empty net had his young team-mate squared the ball rather than opting to shoot straight at Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor from a tight angle late on.

Cahill had charged forward to give Onyedinma the option, a run that showed how much fitter he now is.

It was an exhilarating cameo appearance from the 38-year-old and after the final whistle he went to the corner of the KMOC Stadium where the

Millwall fans were housed and pumped his fists in celebration.

It would be unfair, though, to log the above as Onyedinma’s only contribution, because deep into injury-time, with Millwall defending around their own box, it was him that dribbled the ball out before he won a free-kick off Ola Aina.

The referee blew for that and then immediately blew the final whistle.

Onyedinma had earned the vigorous pats on the back from his team-mates.

Millwall have now played two teams that were in the Premier League last season and were disappointed not to take six points rather than four from them.

Millwall were also 2-0 up at half-time earlier this season at Leeds, before going 3-2 down and then somehow pulling a 43 win out of the fire. That started the current run of five league wins away from home in succession.

“We didn’t talk about Leeds but that would certainly have come into the equation in the players’ minds – 2-0 up is a dangerous scoreline. The first ten or

fifteen minutes in the second half are key,” Harris said.

“I thought even when the goal went in we didn’t panic, the players didn’t get too deep. Naturally you drop back. But bringing the experience of Tim Cahill and Steve Morison on was crucial for us.”

If Harris was beaming afterwards, Hull boss Nigel Adkins was blasting his players. He said: "That was by way and beyond the worst performance since I've been at the football club, I need to get to the bottom of it.

"I'm very annoyed, I'm trying to keep a calm voice for this, but I thought we were nowhere near what was expected."

Music to the ears of Millwall, who continue to leave opposition managers exasperated.

They owe Brentford one this weekend after being denied by a refereeing decision when they met earlier this season.

If they can pull off another win, then it would be hard not to conclude that anything is possible this season.

The Lions haven’t lost at The Den since November, but went down 1-0 to the Bees earlier this season after Lee Gregory had a goal ruled out and then missed a penalty.

Dean Smith’s Brentford play a possession-based game, which could suit Millwall who will sit deep and look to hurt their opponents on the counterattack.

Sunderland sat back and allowed Millwall have the ball for long spells, and eventually paid the price when Shaun Hutchinson grabbed an equaliser for a 1-1 draw.

Harris felt a “rubbish decision” from the referee – when he whistled for a penalty just as Gregory was firing the ball home – cost his side at Griffin Park.

But he was impressed with how his players performed against an established Championship club who have gone close to the play-offs in recent years.

Harris is expecting a “cracking game”

this weekend and believes that Brentford will come to attack his side.

He said: “Teams very rarely sit off us and allow us have the ball. We’re very dangerous and Sunderland found that out and just about escaped with a point.

“I don’t expect Brentford to do that to us. They will always try to win the game because that’s the way Dean sets them up.

“They are a really good football team, great to watch. That’s going to be one hell of a game, a London derby. The frustration after the first game was with the referee’s rubbish decision. That was during a little spell when we had a lot of decisions go against us, as I felt we had last Saturday as well.

“Against Brentford earlier in the season it was a game of two halves.

They dominated possession before the break but second half we were excellent and should have at least drawn the game if not got the win. They threw their bodies on the line at the end of the game, and we had that disallowed goal and a missed penalty.

“It was a cracking game and it will be the same Saturday.”

Aiden O’Brien returned to full training late this week and has an outside chance of being involved.

Only Byron Webster remains an injury absentee for the Lions.

JAMES MEREDITH feels he deserves his international call-up – and praised the influence on him of “Australian icon” Tim Cahill.

Both players were this week named

by Socceroos coach Bert van Marwijk in a 29-player preliminary squad for this month’s international friendlies against Norway in Oslo and Colombia at Fulham’s Craven Cottage.

The Lions duo are hoping to make it to the World Cup in Russia – but Meredith isn’t getting ahead of himself.

He has won two caps for his country,

both of them in 2015.

“I don’t want to speak too soon, it’s still a preliminary squad,” Meredith said. “I feel like I’m ready, I’ve worked hard for years and deserve it.

I’m excited.

“For me it’s special. If I do get a chance to play it’s to serve your country. It’s an opportunity for my family and close friends at home to see what I’ve got, they don’t get to see me very often.

“I love it. I’m a total professional and so is Tim, even more so. It’s great having him here actually because I’m learning things from him. He’s an Australian icon and a legend.

“It’s great to have someone like him around with so much experience and influence.”

Meredith has started every league game for Millwall this season, while Cahill made his fifth appearance off the bench in the 2-1 win over Hull on Tuesday night, getting booked within ten seconds of his introduction for kicking the ball away.

He could have scored, but Fred Onyedinma opted to shoot rather than square the ball with Millwall defending their lead late in the game.

Meredith, though, didn’t criticise his young colleague.

He said: “It happens sometimes, you’ve got to make those decisions in games. But I’m really happy with all the team. We’re playing well, there is a really good atmosphere and team morale is high. I think we are going from strength to strength.

“It’s great to see Tim throwing himself about, just great to see him on the pitch. Him and Steve [Morison] did well, they’re very experienced guys. Every second helps in those scenarios when we’re under pressure a bit.”

Meredith’s excellent form this season has put him right in the frame to end the season with a fairytale trip to Russia.

He is happy with the way his move to the Lions from Bradford has worked out, only wishing he had done it sooner. “I had more than a bit of interest last summer, had offers from Championship clubs. At first I wasn’t completely sure I had made the right decision but soon after I was thinking I wish I had made this move years ago.”

Birmingham became the latest Championship club to change managers this season when they appointed Garry Monk after sacking Steve Cotterill, who had only taken over from Harry Redknapp earlier this campaign.

Monk was a free agent after losing his job with Middlesbrough, who installed out-of-contract Tony Pulis in December.

Seven Championship clubs in the bottom half of the table have different managers to the ones that started the season.

But only Leeds, who pinched Paul Heckingbottom from Barnsley, have paid out compensation to secure their preferred candidate.

Others, like last Tuesday’s opponents Hull, have opted for the likes of Nigel Adkins, who haven’t required money to be paid to be released from any contract.

Morison reckons the fact that Harris is under contract is partly the reason why he hasn’t been mentioned for other jobs, but believes it would take a lot to tempt him away.

“He’s done a great job,” Morison said. “But it’s a typical one where, like players at the club, you don’t see them getting bought for massive fees from Millwall. It’s a club that suits certain people.

“The gaffer has a contract here and he’s doing well. Garry Monk going to Birmingham, he was doing nothing. Same with Tony Pulis, they’re easy to get, they don’t cost any money.

“And I think it would take a lot to get the manager away from this club.”
