A BERMONDSEY woman fears her mother has lost her “forever home” as a specialist care home prepares to close this summer.

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM), which runs Ann Moss specialist care unit in Rotherhithe, has announced its expected closure this August. The home, which has sixteen beds, currently has eleven residents who will be moved elsewhere to places including Streatham.

Why get rid of something that is working?

T IS hard to believe there is not a need to keep the specialist care home for dementia open in Ann Moss Way, Rotherhithe, despite claims from the hospital trust to the contrary.

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) says figures show the “levels of occupancy of the Ann Moss unit are low”, but national figures indicate the number of people with dementia is rising from 850,00 in 2015 to an expected 1 million by 2025.

Charity Age UK have this year claimed that more than one in three people in England diagnosed with dementia are not getting the follow-up care they are entitled to, particularly in getting an individual care plan that is reviewed at least once a year.

At Ann Moss Way there are sixteen rooms and currently just eleven cared for at the home. The story this week is not the first from desperate relatives, who have praised the care received, and are determined it does not close.

With story after story of bad care and people in homes or sheltered accommodation that are not fully equipped for dementia, this move seems to be going against what we hear of most people’s experiences.

The work by carers recently dubbed the ‘Cinderella profession’ because of the long hours and low pay they receive is of major concern. At Ann Moss Way the staff appear to be doing a tremendous job, so if there are five rooms available then surely they can be filled. Why get rid of something that is working?

Crowd-funding appeal to get comedy to festival

A YOUNG director from East Dulwich is crowd-funding to take the feminist comedy show, A Womb of One’s Own to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Holly Bond is a founding member of the all-female theatre company Wonderbox, who started writing and performing original theatre after meeting as students at the National Youth Theatre.

Her directorial debut, the dark comedy A Womb of One’s Own, follows the story of Babygirl, a university fresher and daughter to strict Roman Catholic parents, who discovers she is ‘up the proverbial duff’.

Babygirl chooses to have an abortion and is left facing parental ire and unsympathetic hospital staff in a

show Ms Bond describes as ‘irreverent and laugh-out-loud funny – proving feminism isn’t po-faced’.

The young team are looking to take the dark comedy to the globally acclaimed comedy arts and culture festival in 2018, held for three weeks every August.

Ms Bond told the News: “We have been overwhelmed so far at the success of our show, with sold out nights and great reviews.

“We feel our play will be successful at Edinburgh this year, as it is funny, outrageous and an important story to tell.

“Working with this group of women has made the last two years really fun, and making theatre focused on women feels necessary in this day and age.

“Going up to the most important theatre festival in the world will be the icing on the cake.”

A BERMONDSEY woman fears her mother has lost her “forever home” as a specialist care home prepares to close this summer.

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM), which runs Ann Moss specialist care unit in Rotherhithe, wrote to relatives of residents at the home last week to notify them of its expected closure this August.

The trust said it had concluded the closure was “the right thing to do” in line with national guidance to place emphasis on “long-term community care and short stays in inpatient and specialist care”.

The home, in Ann Moss Way, provides specialist care for adults over 65 who have mental health conditions such as dementia.

Caroline O’Rourke, 43, whose 63-yearold mother Josephine suffers from frontotemporal dementia, said she had made huge improvements since moving to the unit last summer and that the closure could set her back.

“I’ve finally got her in here and I thought it was going to be her forever home; she was really happy and really settled,” said Caroline, who lives in Bermondsey.

“Just last week she remembered how to say my name – she is really coming on and now I feel like it’s going to be detrimental to her – and not just her, all the other people too.

“The people in there are amazing; it’s clean, she’s always got someone to talk to and they take her out.”

Caroline said she was told her mother could be moved to Streatham and that it was too far for her to travel for visits.

“I haven’t slept properly since I got the news – I’m not going to be able to get all the way to Streatham and back,” she said.

“Physically and mentally, are these people able to be moved?”

Another woman whose husband has dementia and is cared for at the home branded the decision to close it as “disgusting”. “The decision came out of the blue and it’s disgusting – there was no warning,” said the woman, who wished to remain anonymous.

Bermondsey woman fears closure of specialist care home with ‘amazing’ staff

“My husband is really vulnerable; he has dementia and his swallowing reflex is impaired so he has to be fed, he has to be turned every couple of hours to avoid bed sores, he is incontinent, and he suffers epileptic fits.

“He needs proper nursing care – he went in there because I could no longer cope with his care... and the care he receives there is second to none.”

There are sixteen rooms at the home, with five currently empty.

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group said in a joint statement: “South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) have been working together to look at the best way to continue to provide high quality care for older people with mental health needs.

“Working alongside the trust and other CCGs this has resulted in plans to make changes to improve those services including a proposal to close the Ann Moss unit.

“There are a number of things that we have taken account of when doing this work, in particular we are aware that we have decreasing demand for specialist care units that are not attached to a major

hospital site, that levels of occupancy of the Ann Moss unit are low, and that there are suitable alternative placements for the current residents.

“We understand that any proposed changes to specific services affecting patients will cause anxiety and we have worked over the last twelve months and more, to ensure that we can make safe provision for the patients, currently housed in Ann Moss Specialist Care Unit.

“The proposal is that Ann Moss will close in late summer 2018.

“The trust and CCG are working closely together to communicate with and support residents, their families or representatives, and staff throughout the period of transition.

“Families will have choice of where their relative should continue to receive care and we are doing all we can to make arrangements for patients to move closer to their families if that is their wish.

“Patients who continue to need a higher level of specialist care will have the option of transferring to the Greenvale Unit, near Streatham Common in Lambeth. This is a purpose-built facility for older adults with dementia and mental health problems, and provides an equally-high level of care to Ann Moss.”

Police find family’s stolen tandem - and personally return it

A MOTHER has praised Southwark police officers for going out of their way to return her stolen tandem bike which she uses as a “family car”.

The News previously reported the story of Katy Thompson who was left struggling to get her nine-year-old daughter Adaray around after their child back tandem was stolen in Camberwell.

The 39-year-old single parent was left at a loss after the £1,500 Thorn tandem was stolen from a bike stand outside Cowling & Wilcox arts shop in Orpheus Street on Monday, February 5.

But her prayers were answered just days later when police officers rang her out of the blue on Saturday, February 10, to say they had found her bike.

“They phoned at about 8.30/9pm and said ‘we know you are a lone parent, we are going to bring it back in a van’,” said Katy, an art technician and bike mechanic.

“I think it [the News article] really told our story and gave a little bit of background to how much we need our tandem so the police officers in the area really took it to heart and were really looking out for it.

“The two officers who dropped it off were just really kind and really good about it.

“It’s been so nice just to tell the story of stuff working – of something getting stolen and then getting returned.”

Katy said there was a small note on the bike stand outside the arts shop warning people there had been thefts – but it had been covered by another bike.

She said the stand had been cut,

although it was not obvious, and that it could be moved apart to slide a bike lock off.

Inspector Owen Pyle, based at Peckham police station, said officers received an anonymous tip off from someone reporting to have seen the bike abandoned at the Glebe Estate, on Peckham Park Road.

“Local response team officers attended as soon as they were able to and found the bike,” he said.

“Having read the crime report and also the news article, they were aware that it was a lifeline for the victim and requested a van unit to take it straight to her home.

“This is just one example of Southwark police officers going above and beyond what would be expected of them.

“Officers on the borough are doing things like this, day in day out, to make sure they provide the best possible

service to the public.”

Unfortunately no suspect has yet been identified and inquiries are still ongoing.

‘We were all in shock’ says Walworth mum EXCLUSIVE

A MOTHER has been left with a gaping hole in her ceiling after it collapsed on top of her teenage daughter while she lay in bed.

Aynur Sahin’s sixteen-year-old daughter was lying on the top bunk of the bed she shares with her older sister on Saturday morning when she heard a cracking sound.

But before the sixth form student had time to react, part of the ceiling collapsed on top of her and debris rained down on her bed.

Describing the moment it happened, Aynur said she was downstairs in the family’s two-bedroom maisonette when she heard her daughters’ screams.

“I was downstairs and my daughter suddenly screamed and said ‘Mum you need to come upstairs’ and I saw a big crack in the ceiling and my daughter was still on the bed,” said the 48-yearold teaching assistant, who lives in Walworth.

“We were all in shock but we got my daughter down and she was kind of traumatised – then we realised we needed to phone the fire brigade and they came within five minutes.”

Aynur said the fire brigade had to make the hole bigger to make the ceiling safe and that a council officer visited the same day, but the ceiling had still not been fixed on Tuesday.

“They [the council] said they would put a temporary solution in place first but they haven’t fixed it since Saturday,” she said.

“It was leaking from the roof and they suggested that we put a bucket underneath – it’s unbelievable.

“I chased it up in the morning and the council said they needed to let the other

residents know that the water needed to be shut down for one day for them to replace the pipes on the roof, as they think it’s a pipe that’s caused it.”

Aynur, who has lived in the property for sixteen years but bought it five years ago and refurbished it, said her sixteen and twenty-year-old daughters were sleeping in her bed while she slept on the floor in the living room.

The council is responsible for the upkeep of the actual building.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, apologised and said the ceiling would be fixed as the News went to press on Tuesday.

“I am really sorry for the inconvenience this has caused Ms Sahin and her family, this did take us longer than it should have done to resolve and we did not follow our usual referral process, which I apologise for,” she said.

“We will review how this was dealt with to ensure the correct process is followed in future.

“The leak will be fixed today [Tuesday] and then will need to dry out for a few days before we can plaster and complete the required work.”

Aiden O’Brien’s surprise visit to see Lions fan

BERMONDSEY BOY Harvey Brown has been recovering from a knee operation which should give him a “better lease of life” - and received a visit from his Millwall hero while he was in hospital.

The life-long Millwall fan – who turned nine earlier this month – suffers from the rare Morquio syndrome which causes him to have “knockknee”, among other things.

It means Harvey’s skeleton will not develop properly; his organs will continue to grow but his weak bones will not and he is likely to develop heart disease and breathing difficulties,

and have problems with his vision and hearing.

An operation three years ago saw metal plates put in Harvey’s knees to help straighten his legs out and stop them from rubbing together so he can walk easier.

The youngster had the plates removed from his left knee during an operation at Great Ormond Street Hospital on Friday since his left leg has successfully straightened, but his right knee still needs more time.

Harvey is now at home resting but his family has noticed a difference in how tall he is and how far he can walk.

“He couldn’t walk that far before – he could only walk about two yards and would have to be carried and he has a wheelchair which he doesn’t rely on but uses when he’s tired,” said his 48-year-old dad, Dean.

“He obviously can’t do what other kids can do but we’ve noticed he can do a lot more and he has got a lot taller with it. He loves football so he plays

more football now.

“In six months hopefully the right one will be in the right direction and he will have another operation to take the plates out.”

A visit from Harvey’s favourite Millwall player, Aiden O’Brien, and a video wishing him to get well soon from his teacher and classmates are said to have lifted the youngster’s spirits while he was in hospital.

“His favourite player used to be Fred Onyedinma but is now Aiden O’Brien and you can see the special bond between the two of them,” said Dean.

“I messaged him just to ask if he could come round our home once Harvey was out of hospital but he turned up at the hospital on his own on Friday, which I wasn’t expecting.

“He walked in with a big smile on his face and it really did lift Harvey.

“Harvey’s teacher and classmates also sent him a video and that cheered him up as well – they’ve been brilliant.”

Council carrying out renovations to crematorium EXCLUSIVE

A BEREFT son was shocked to find out his mother’s ashes would be relocated from their resting place.

When Tim Ung’s mother passed away in 2008, he chose to have her ashes placed in Honor Oak Crematorium, in Camberwell New Cemetery.

Mr Ung purchased a 25-year lease for an ‘interior niche’, a walled container to hold his mother’s ashes.

The lease includes the option to renew at the end of its term, and makes no mention that Southwark Council can remove the ashes and change the memorial's location.

But on February 8 Mr Ung received a letter saying that his mother’s ashes would be removed and access to the room disrupted for a fortnight as the council redevelops the building with work starting just days later.

When Mr Ung, from Deptford, contacted the cemetery to refuse permission and complain that it seemed to be in breach of his lease and written at short notice, the council staff responded saying that the letter was an ‘advisory notice’, and the works would proceed as planned as the lease does not guarantee an exact location.

According to the council, Honor Oak Crematorium needs renovation work and improved disabled access.

Mr Ung said: “The cemetery wants to turn the room into a waiting area and said there was a consultation with families but I had not hear about it until I received their letter out of the blue.

“I was shocked to receive the letter telling me about the building plans with such little notice.

“It is the same as if they just decided to move a coffin or gravestone. It’s not what you expect.

“It is very upsetting for my family – we chose a 25-year lease with the option to renew so that my mother could rest in peace.”

The married father-of-two visits the memorial room every other month to

pay his respects.

The memorials will be moved to a smaller room, but details of what it will be like are still unclear and he claims they were only shared on request after his official complaint.

“I only saw what the plans for the new room were like after I asked them, and pressed for the

leaseholders launched a legal challenge to the terms offered.

In partnership with the Notting Hill Housing Trust, the council is demolishing the estate and building new homes as part of its on-going regeneration plan.

A previous inquiry ruled against Southwark Council’s Compulsory Purchase Order to force the few remaining leaseholders to leave, but the decision was subsequently overturned.

Communities Secretary, Sajid Javid objected to a policy which required leaseholders to give up all but £16,000 of their savings if they wanted a new shared ownership or shared equity home.

This policy has now been changed, but leaseholders say it is still unfair that they

are means-tested in seeking rehoming assistance from the council, especially when the amount paid by the council for their property is unlikely to buy a ‘like for like’ property elsewhere in Southwark.

Cllr Mark Williams, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and New Homes, told the News: “Throughout the regeneration we have continued to listen and respond to what leaseholders are saying.

“We have looked at how we can tailor our rehousing offer for resident leaseholders so that it can meet some of the needs being raised by the remaining resident leaseholders across the estate.

“We are committed to the regeneration of the Aylesbury Estate and will continue to work with residents to find the best

solution to their re-housing needs.”

Homeowner Beverley Robinson, from the Aylesbury Leaseholders Action Group, said: “The Aylesbury Leaseholders have been challenging for three years the unjust, unfair and intrusive rehousing policies of Southwark Council and Notting Hill Housing Trust.

“The leaseholders are now embarking upon the second Public Inquiry in as little as two years, after winning a landmark case at the first Public Inquiry in 2015.

“This resulted in Southwark dropping their policy requiring leaseholders to spend all their savings, bar £16000 on a new property.

“Notting Hill Housing Trust has also committed to mirroring this policy

information,” he said last week, “At no point has anyone apologised to me for the way this has been handled.”

Mr Ung was present when his mother’s ashes were removed from the units, when work started on Friday, February 16, and has chosen to keep them at his home while building work took place.

In a copy of the signed lease seen by the News, there is no mention that location of the memorial can be moved by the council. In a letter dated February 8, the council said the Book of Remembrance Room would be turned into a waiting room area to accommodate people attending cremations.

The letter explains: “As part of the above works, your memorial will be moved from its current location and relocated to a new nearby remembrance suite.”

Work is due to finish on March 4.

The letter goes on to apologise for inconvenience and assure families that the works will be conducted in a ‘professional and dignified manner’.

Cllr Ian Wingfield, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and the Public Realm, said: “I would like to apologise to Mr Ung for the upset that our renovations have caused him.

“However, he met with our cemeteries team on 15 February and collected his mother’s ashes, which he has taken to rest at home during the period of the works.

“These works respond directly to requests from families and visitors and include the refurbishment of the chapel, the floral tribute area, waiting facilities, washrooms and memorial visitation areas.

“We hope these renovations will create a more relaxed and respectful environment for the families and visitors we serve.”

Second Aylesbury public inquiry adjourned

THE SECOND public inquiry into Southwark Council’s compulsory purchase of homes on the Aylesbury Estate has been adjourned, as leaseholders continue to push Southwark Council and the Notting Hill Housing Trust to offer a better deal for homeowners.

The inquiry was delayed at the end of last month after overrunning, and is set to reconvene on April 17, 2018, for a fortnight.

Southwark Council wants the government to give the go-ahead to redeveloping homes on the estate, after

THE COUNCIL has confirmed it is in talks with potential partners about re-opening the Blue Youth Centre in Bermondsey.

A BERMONDSEY man who brutally attacked his girlfriend with a rolling pin and granite pestle just months after repeatedly stabbing his friend with scissors has been jailed.

Patrick Berry, 51, of Balaclava Road, (pictured) has been locked up for nine years with an extended licence totalling twelve years after attacking his friend and girlfriend in their homes.

The first attack took place in the early hours of December 1, 2016, after Berry and his girlfriend at the time went to his friend’s home in Bermondsey following an evening at the pub.

The friend complimented Berry's girlfriend on her clothing and then went into another room.

Berry followed the victim into the room and kicked him in the back knocking him to the floor.

He then sat on the victim's chest, grabbed a pair of nearby nail scissors and stabbed the victim repeatedly in the face with them and tried to stab him in the eyes.

The victim managed to struggle free and turned onto his front. Berry then started to stab the victim in the back. Berry then stood up, stamped on the victim and hit him with a chair before leaving the premises with his girlfriend.

The attack lasted for about 20 minutes and resulted in the victim losing consciousness and requiring hospital treatment.

Berry was arrested on December 19, 2016, and gave a no comment interview.

He was charged the following day.

Months later, at about 3pm on March 29, 2017, Berry went over to his new girlfriend's house in Bermondsey.

He started talking to her about his upcoming trial in regards to the incident on December 1 and when she said she did not want to talk about it Berry “flipped out” and carried out a sustained attack on her that lasted for about two hours.

The victim fell to the floor and the attack continued with the victim losing consciousness while Berry repeatedly kicked and stamped on her. He also sat on her chest preventing her from being able to breathe.

She received a total of 45 centimetres of wound to her scalp requiring 21 staples and four stitches to her head. She also had significant bruising to her face and legs.

Berry was arrested on March 30, 2017.

He denied attacking the victim and said that she had tried to attack him. He was charged on April 3, 2017.

On Tuesday at Blackfrairs Crown Court Judge Clarke sentenced Berry to nine years' imprisonment, with an extended licence totalling twelve years for grievous bodily harm with intent and 40 months' imprisonment for grievous bodily harm, to run concurrently. He was also handed a restraining order preventing him from contacting either victim for an indefinite period. During sentencing Judge Clarke classified Berry as a “dangerous offender” and described the crime scene photos from his female victim’s home as "a scene from The Oresteia” - an Ancient Greek tragedy - due to the amount of blood.

It came as youth services and Liberal Democrats in the area campaigned for a new centre to replace the club, which closed a few years ago.

Council’s director of environment prepares to climb Mount Kilimanjaro

IT IS the tallest mountain in Africa and well known for causing extreme altitude sickness, but that is not stopping one of Southwark Council’s bosses Deborah Collins from attempting to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for Southwark-founded charity, The Change Foundation.

During office hours, Ms Collins, aged 54, can be found at the council where she works as Strategic Director for Environment and Leisure.

She describes her work: “My department works on all the things you see when you walk out the front door, from rubbish collection, to parks and libraries, to trading standards, it’s all the things that hopefully make life better for people.”

But in her evenings and weekends, she is undergoing gruelling training and preparation to climb the 19,341 foot-high Tanzanian peak on March 17.

Although Ms Collins, who lives with her two adult children in Wimbledon, loves walking and mountains, she admits that Kilimanjaro is likely to push her to her limits.

“I’ve done a fair bit of walking but I’m terrified, to be honest with you.

“This is going up a mountain in five days in the rainy season and a lot of people get altitude sickness and can’t reach the top.

Fashion designer and lecturer Daniel Blake launched his London Fashion Week Upcycling Challenge at the new Bermondsey Uprising community popup shop on Southwark Park Road last Wednesday, February 14.

Using recycled clothes donated by Mary's Living and Giving on

Bermondsey Street and scrap fabrics from Work and Play Scrapstore, Daniel challenged people of all ages to learn to make their own clothes and accessories. He was joined by upcycling fashion designer Luciana Soul, a new indoor market trader at Bermondsey Uprising.

On Sunday, prizes were awarded to the three top entries, including nineteen-year-old Billie, whom Daniel taught to use a sewing machine on the first day of the challenge.

By the final day she had made a clutch bag from recycled fabric, and

now hopes to go on to design and make her own costumes. Former fashion student Kat also created a prizewinning dress from scrap fabric, while six-year-old Robin won a prize for a dress she designed and made for her doll. Bermondsey Uprising is run by and for the community through a partnership between charities Community Opportunity and Big Local Works, funded by United St Saviour's Charity and supported by Southwark Council and the Blue Bermondsey Business Improvement District.

Appeal to raise money to send cancer sufferer for treatment in US

THE FAMILY of a young Rotherhithe woman with cancer who had dreams of becoming a lawyer are appealing to raise enough money to send her to America for specialist treatment.

Brooke Gregory, now 25, was an ambitious law student who had previously represented Great Britain in karate when she was diagnosed with rare cancer synovial sarcoma in July 2015.

The former St Saviour’s and St Olave’s School student first began showing signs of the illness at the age of about sixteen when she felt tired all of the time.

And when she had a fall at the age of 22, she ended up with a bad pain in her leg which kept getting worse and turned out to be a tumour.

Mum Carole, 59, who lives in Rotherhithe with Brooke and her sister Lucie, 28, said the tumour soon “grew to the size of a golf ball and then spread to her lungs”.

Brooke is now on a new round of chemotherapy which her mum says is the last she can have in this country so her family are fundraising to fly her to Texas for specialist treatment.

"It seems they've tried everything for us and basically this [the chemotherapy] is just buying her time and it's not a cure or anything like that,” said Carole.

"The last two chemotherapies haven't worked at all and the tumours are still growing so it's a case of seeing whether it works or not.

"It's really difficult because the hospital is saying because of where the larger tumours are on her lungs they can't operate on them and this chemo is shrinking them - but then

they may not be able to operate so we really need a second opinion.

"We are just trying to get her over there [to America] to get her the therapy to shrink it to see if they can operate.”

Carole said Brooke was unable to sit up in bed without being sick and that she had “no life at all”.

"She is just really depressed and she

said it herself – this has changed her so much as a person,” she said.

"She was never like this and just accepted it and faced it head on but now she says she can't take it anymore.”

"She had hopes and dreams of doing so many things.

"She was at Kingston University studying law. She completed her

second year although she was in so much pain and she was told she could've come out of it with a first.

"She tried to go back twice in her third year but just couldn't do it.”

RESIDENTS IN Rotherhithe can finally enjoy faster broadband after new wireless aerials went live across the borough.

Rotherhithe in particular is one of the worst-affected parts of London when it comes to the issue of poor digital connectivity, meaning people living in the area are unable to access anything but the most basic broadband speeds.

The News has previously reported instances of residents going to the lengths of travelling to Canada Water station just to download large files using the Wi-Fi there.

And poor broadband has also affected businesses on the peninsula, with many reporting that slow speeds and unreliable network connections negatively affect productivity and limit their opportunities for growth.

As part of its plans to improve broadband across Southwark, the

council has signed a number of lease agreements with broadband provider Relish, enabling them to install wireless aerials on residential council buildings, which will deliver up to 40Mb broadband speeds across 70 per cent of the borough. In total, 23 new aerials and masts have been approved for installation across the borough, including four in Rotherhithe, with half already delivering Relish’s wireless broadband service.

Southwark’s cabinet member for finance, modernisation and performance, said: “We are delighted that more people can now access superfast broadband, particularly in Rotherhithe where the issue has been so acute. The rollout of wireless aerials is just one step in the council’s commitment to improve connectivity for residents and make Southwark a truly digital borough.

“Our ultimate long-term goal is a full rollout of fibre optic broadband across

the borough and we have already made a start by submitting a joint bid with TfL, the GLA and several other local authorities for funding from central government, as part of a national £200million challenge fund for broadband projects.

“If successful, the funding will be used in Southwark to improve digital connectivity in areas of the borough with poor broadband speeds, particularly in the Rotherhithe peninsula.”

A WOMEN’S refuge for victims of domestic violence is appealing for donated items amid fears government funding cuts could have devastating consequences for women trying to escape their abusers.

Labour councillor Samantha Jury-Dada is leading a fundraising campaign to help the service, run by the women’s charity Refuge at a secret location in Southwark, to mark International Women’s Day held on March 8 every year.

Refuge staff are calling for gifts including toiletries, nappies and nonperishable food for the women and children it protects from violent partners.

Cllr Jury-Dada, who represents the Faraday ward in Walworth, said: “One in four women will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime and one in seven children under the age of eighteen has lived with domestic abuse in their household.

“It is an issue which affects people from all walks of life, regardless of household income, race and age.”

According to Southwark Council, the borough has one of the highest reported levels of domestic abuse to the police in

London, with an average of 2,200 – 2,400 recorded incidents a year.

But the refuge’s staff said if proposed changes to housing benefit went ahead, the national charity’s funding – which has already seen 80 per cent cuts from the government – would dwindle even further, potentially putting lives at risk.

Under the planned welfare changes, abused women will no longer be entitled to housing benefit, which helps fund their stay and access specialist support like counselling and financial advice. Instead, the benefit will be paid directly to their local council to provide suitable housing.

Sandra Horley CBE, chief executive of the national charity Refuge, warned cashstrapped councils are increasingly turning to cheaper, hostel-style accommodation for emergency housing support, rather than investing in specialist services such as Refuge’s homes. According to the charity, up to four in every ten nationwide refuges could close, meaning 4,000 more women and children across the country could be left with nowhere to go.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark’s cabinet member for housing, said: “Finding appropriate housing solutions for those who have suffered domestic abuse is an extremely high priority for the council and one we have

"We currently have highly specialised, independent support workers from Solace, Women’s Aid, a domestic abuse charity, based at our homelessness unit.

"Clients are referred for support and we look at how to protect and support them into the right housing where they, and their children, are safe.

“We no-longer use bed and breakfast as

temporary accommodation for families with children and look for appropriate housing where necessary.

"Every person’s circumstances is unique and this sits at the heart of how we tackle the issue – we have a domestic abuse board which draws together expertise from a range of services including the police, housing, specialist charities and victim support teams to look at each

individual’s situation.We will continue to push for greater support for victims of abuse, of all kinds.”

Donations for Southwark’s women’s refuge can be dropped off at InSpire, The Crypt, St Peter's Church, Liverpool Grove, SE17 2HH. The refuge is in particular need of women's toiletries including shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste and toothbrushes, baby and child toiletries, nappies, new single sets of bedding and non-perishable food such as pasta, rice, long-life sauces, soups, beans and milk.

The drop-off point will be open from am to 5pm on Mondays, 9am to 7pm from Tuesday to Friday, and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays.

RESIDENTS ARE being reminded that every electoral ward boundary is set to change in some way at the next local election in May.

Some wards will have a new name, others may have a different number of councillors, and many voters may find they have to go to a different polling station this year.

This is because the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) – an independent body – has reviewed Southwark’s boundaries as there have been changes in population meaning that some areas have too many councillors and others too few.

The changes will come into effect at the next full council election on May 3 and voters can expect to receive details on their polling card.

Under the new boundaries, there will now be 23 wards rather than 21 – but the number of councillors will stay the same at 63.

Seventeen wards will have three councillors, while the remaining six wards will be represented by two councillors.

name – but others will have a new name, such as Old Kent Road and St Giles.

And some wards, such as Peckham, will only have changed slightly, while others have changed quite a bit.

The final recommendation for the changes came after the Commission held an eight-week public consultation on its draft proposals.

The recommendations were passed

by Parliament and will come into effect at the next council election on Thursday, May 3, 2018.

“Across the borough, we have sought to balance the views expressed to us by local people with the criteria we must apply when we are deciding on new electoral arrangements,” Professor Colin Mellors, chair of the LGBCE, said when he announced the final recommendation in July 2016.

“As such, we believe these recommendations deliver electoral equality for voters as well as reflecting the identities of communities in Southwark.”

Residents are urged to register to vote if they haven’t already – although you won’t have to register again just because your ward has changed.

THE MERGER of Southwark and Lambeth’s police forces has been criticised by MPs and independent police advisors.

Last week the News reported that Southwark and Lambeth police would merge into one Basic Command Unit.

The restructure is part of a cost-cutting drive to save £73 million, and comes on top of axing 1,865 posts across London and closing police counters.

Almost 500 redundancies will be made in management positions, but the exact roles to be cut in Southwark is unconfirmed.

Stephen Bourne, who has worked with Southwark Police voluntarily for many years and is one of the longest serving members of an Independent Advisory Group in London, said he is proud of the relationship he has with Southwark Police and describes this as ‘a long and productive partnership’, but told the News: “I am unhappy about the merging of boroughs.

“I do not blame Southwark Police as this is about saving money.

“My feeling is that the community has been sold out on this and so I blame politicians of all parties, for not consulting with us.

“This is a slippery slope when key players in our communities are ignored.

“As far as I am concerned the merging

of boroughs is the latest nail in the coffin of the Metropolitan Police as we know it.

“We have lost police stations and, more importantly, public access to front counters.

“Instead we are encouraged to call 101 to report non-emergencies, but the last time I did this, I waited over an hour before giving up because no one answered.

“In spite of providing the best service they can, response teams are being stretched to the limit.

Avril Jones an independent police advisor for Southwark and London-wide police, and a stop and search community lead based in Peckham, said she believed the London Met police cuts could push community policing onto volunteer and community groups, rather than invest in training for officers.

She described the move as 'potentially very short-sighted'.

Ms Jones said: "As Independent Advisors, we are always looking for new and interested people who want to support yet challenge Metropolitan Police Service working methods but there are few willing to give their time or commitment.

"When I speak to officers on the ground, many are frustrated that they can't deal with everything and serve their communities as they are so stretched.

"Morale, in my view, in the borough teams is still quite low.

The former Scott Lidgett Secondary School in Bermondsey is currently being used by the prestigious Old Vic theatre.

A collection of their alumni from over six years of Old Vic New Voices community cast are staging their first production as Waste Not theatre company. Using the Old Vic Workrooms, this new company’s promenade production ‘State of Things’, will see the drab 1960’s building transformed for a collection of short plays, centred on the idea of collective bargaining. From a tree hugger on a mission below the back stairwell, to warring sisters in the

former science lab, to robots in the old school’s kitchen.

The building will be opened to the public for just two nights on Thursday and Friday, March 1 and 2.

The audience will be guided around the building, which is set to be demolished to make way for luxury apartments by developer Grosvenor.

Last week MP Helen Hayes said she was concerned resources were being spread too thinly.

MP Harriet Harman added: “This merger is driven not by the needs of people living in Southwark, or the police, but by cuts.” She added: "Local engagement is absolutely key to successful policing and I’m very concerned that the important working relationship that’s been built up between Southwark Borough Command and their team with the communities in Southwark and the council will be diluted by this merger.

“That’s why I have consistently opposed merging the two boroughs and I’m disappointed that they are going ahead with it.

"I am writing to the Met Commissioner, Cressida Dick, to ask her to conduct a review in twelve months’ time to examine whether the merger is working for the community in Southwark”.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Service said: “Police officers will continue to patrol and be based across both Lambeth and Southwark following the changes to the local policing structure. However the decision about where the leadership team will be located is yet to be decided.”

Millwall Community Trust to launch new job programme BERMONDSEY: Millwall Community Trust will launch a free employment support programme next week.

The trust is running the programme from Monday, February 26, for anyone aged nineteen to 50.

It will offer courses in catering and hospitality, cleaning and maintenance, sports fitness, sports coaching, construction, administration, and retail.

The course will also include English and maths functional skills and is being run in partnership with Mitre, Learning Curve Group, and Big Local Works.

It will run from 9.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday at Big Local Works, 4 Market Place, Southwark Park Road, SE16 3UQ. Applicants can choose from a two, four, or six-week programme.

Ideas for the Blue

I'M A local resident and shop at the Blue quite often.

It's an area that is close to my home and close to my heart after almost a decade in Bermondsey.

Although I didn't grow up here, it's an area that has welcomed me and some of our traders have become good friends.

I'm impressed by the plans I've seen thus far. We do need more market stalls - I look a bit sadly at the old sepia photos of Bermondsey market spreading the length of Southwark Park Road and catering to all tastes. I realise the market needs to stay physically located on the square, but it would be great to have a bit more variety in the offerings and food stalls still available at the time I come home from work.

Bermondsey has changed a lot even in the short time that I've lived here, and I would love to see some other market traders, maybe a bakery one (face it, who doesn't love good bread and cake?!) and be still my beating heart - a fancy cheese stall. The Blue shouldn't be aiming to be a carbon copy of Borough Market. But it is absurd that so many of the products sold in high end delis across London are actually from Bermondsey Kappacasein cheese, Kernel beer etc - and yet when you go to the Blue, less than 500 metres from where many of these products are produced, can you find them being sold or even offered as tastings? No. A small night market (maybe with different traders and a focus on street food and fruit and veg for the "I forgot to buy something for dinner" crew) in the early evening would be great. It appears to work up at Canada Water so why not here in the Blue? I almost wonder whether you could get a sort of veg box scheme going, whereby residents pay a regular fixed amount per week to have a fruit, veg (and fish?) box delivered to their doorstep early one morning.

At a weekend, please could we have some food trucks (just one, even) and a stall giving free cookery demos using produce you can buy that day from the market, with the recipes available on Facebook and a few printed copies for those who don't have the internet at home? Those are simple ideas that might give the area a bit more pizazz and encourage trade. People have never been so interested in food, and I think the Blue can help us all to be a bit more experimental in our cooking! Russell's fish stall has definitely encouraged me to try some fish dishes I'd have been too scared of, because the quality is awesome and he's willing to prep it for me and give me some culinary tips. Even if I bring home an octopus and realise I don't know what to do with it (this is genuinely something I've done) there's Google or YouTube to show me the way.

Most of all though, I'm pleased the Blue is reaching out to local residents for ideas and suggestions. The pop up shop in the old Santander branch is fantastic, and I am definitely going to try out the zumba class

More WiFi coverage

I AM delighted to see that free wifi zones, covering larger areas, are becoming a reality in parts of London and the country.

In the latest development, The City of London has announced a deal which will see free, superfast wifi available to anyone within the square mile. This is great news but needs to happen in many more areas.

A modern 21st century economy relies on fast and reliable communication. Sadly, while the traditional mobile data system is good in some parts of London, it is still too patchy or too slow in many other important areas. This new approach sees a web of tiny antennae, spread across an area, creating a whole zone of reliable coverage at super fast speeds. This solves the problem of buildings and other obstacles reducing the signal.

I had discussions a few years ago about encouraging enterprise zones

across our city to offer the same.

Business follows good infrastructure, not only on public transport in areas where people can access the internet whether they are in the cafe or the office.

If we want London to be at the forefront of the world’s leading cities then we would do well to roll out more, wider areas of WiFi coverage.

Run for Diabetes UK

DIABETES UK is urging people to go the extra mile on Sunday, 20 May by taking part in the Simply Health Great Manchester Run for the charity.

The iconic race sees thousands of runners take on both the 10k and half marathon challenges making the event suitable for all athletic abilities.

Runners will take in views of some of the city’s most significant landmarks including Old Trafford Football Ground, the Imperial War Museum and Beetham Tower.

Diabetes is a serious condition that, if not properly managed, can lead to devastating complications such as blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke and amputation. Today is no different. From the finance sector at More London, to tech start-ups and small salons dotted along Peckham Rye, Southwark is home to 18,000 businesses. In the last decade we have seen several intensive regeneration programmes that have seen Southwark become synonymous with growth and development. We should ensure this continues, that businesses are protected and that there is a space for them to grow in our borough.

I want to do all I can to support small local businesses in Southwark to succeed. Currently 87% of the businesses in the borough are small with less than nine employees and they are vital to our local economy and local employment rates.

However, as the borough has grown and developed over the past ten years, small businesses are beginning to feel the difficult side of a good thing. Whilst the growth has seen more footfall and spending in Southwark, allowing for more businesses to open and existing ones to expand, the downside is the increase in cost of running a business in Southwark. As our borough becomes more and more of a hotspot, many small businesses are threatened by the rising costs of business rates, rent increases and a severe lack of affordable workspaces. The recent business rate increase saw an average increase of 40% in business rates – some businesses in the SE1 area saw an increase of 80%. It’s incredibly important that as we grow, we protect small businesses and ensure they are not pushed out as they are such a wonderful and important part of our community.

As life gets financially harder for some businesses in Southwark, it is vital we celebrate them and the schemes that are assisting in their longevity. The Southwark Business Excellence Awards will be held for the first time this summer and will see businesses of all kinds celebrated for innovation, good practice, diversity and more. Southwark is so diverse in its community and this is reflected in our businesses so I am pleased to see it formally celebrated and encouraged in this way.

To encourage more small businesses to move to and remain in the borough, I am particularly keen to see regeneration projects taking place where affordable workspace is a focal point in the planning application. Southwark Council has continued to promote small local businesses and has used its procurement and planning weight to lever apprenticeships and local job opportunities into contracts across the borough.

This is a fantastic way to ensure our borough’s local economy grows and through this, the Council have helped over 5,000 people in this way in just three years.

We are lucky to have such a vibrant borough with so many fantastic businesses. I want to continue to see Southwark thrive so I encourage everyone to engage with our local businesses as much as possible by shopping and using local services and encourage businesses to submit an entry for the forthcoming Southwark Business Excellence Awards. www.southwarkawards.co.uk

SOUTHWARK PLAYHOUSE’S new offering, Angry, started off, er, angry, with Tyrone Huntley (Jesus Christ Superstar) and Georgie Henley (The Chronicles of Narnia) taking the roles of ‘him’ and ‘her,’ writes Rosie O’Connell.

Philip Ridley’s latest work is an emotive set of six genderless monologues, with each actor switching between each set throughout the run. Huntley started us off in the performance I attended with, as I mentioned, a very angry piece, and while it was performed well, it was quite bizarre being yelled at in the confines of Southwark Playhouse’s ‘Little’ about whether we enjoyed the film Bambi or not. Moving swiftly on, though, to ‘Okay’, Henley’s first piece of the evening was a stark contrast to the explosive rage of the first, delivering a frantic American tirade of a self-professed procrastinator, battling against words such as ‘ponder’ and ‘hesitate’ only to loop back on herself, back to the beginning, repeating the same lines in an ever increasing delirium.

Women create a storm

THE STARK stage and minimum props for this all-female version of The Tempest allows the beauty of Shakespeare’s language to be focused on. And although starting a little slow, once this comedy hit its pace it was energetic, inventive and fun, writes Susan Hallissey.

The 90 minute long production in the delightful Union Theatre, which was transformed for the night by set designers Justin Williams and Jonny Rust into a hearty street scene in Spain during the Peninsular War. The play starts with a very convincing opening number by Alexander Barria, who is playing painter Francesco Goya the artist whose work inspired the writing of Carmen. Barria sings a series of melodic yet melancholic songs, which beautifully thread their way through the narrative.

As the play progresses we see a burst of energy from the chorus line, who light up the stage with lively, yet smooth, choreography by Adam Haigh, and visually pleasing costume design by Penn O'Gara. A talented troupe brought the story to life from start to finish with committed and dynamic performances, complemented by a unified ring of voices that harmoniously provided an array of beautifully written lyrics.

For a small theatre, the space became very expansive and was nicely lit by Ben Jacobs, who managed to create a very dreamlike, diaphanous effect over the intimate and tender moments acted out by lead cast members Rachel LeaGray, as Carmen, and Maximilian Marston’s Captain Velarde.

A very enjoyable watch overall, so congratulations to a talented cast and great production team.

My only point for development is that more could have been done to add a sense of authenticity to the play's Spanish heritage. For example, it would have been nice to see traditional Flamenco style choreography, or to

have used Spanish accents more consistently throughout the play rather than at random points.

Not happy with Angry

‘Bloodshot’ gives Huntley the chance to shine, with the longest of his monologues of the evening. A suspiciously uneasy story of a measured and careful teen’s erotic encounter in a park, Huntley’s performance is intense and earnest, but the story doesn’t really lead anywhere.

‘Bloodshot’ is not alone in this, the monologues do seem to fizzle out, often feeling like a great beginning to what could be a great piece that has been left unfinished, resulting in confusion and overall sense of ‘huh?’.

But then there is ‘Air’, a fully formed, engaging narrative. Leading us from a bookshop meet, through recollections of childhood and back to the blossoming romance, full of the awkwardness of first dates and first kisses we know how this ends and it isn’t going to end nicely. These memories are laced between Henley’s present, trapped underwater in a sinking ship, we are gradually given access to

James Donnelly’s set is simple but beautiful, fitting each monologue perfectly, the actors penned into a mirrored pit, framed from above by Cassie Mitchell’s neon lights with music smoothly transitioning throughout from narrative to narrative. Alas, this just isn’t quite enough to maintain a connecting thread.

While the two actors’ performances are explosive and engaging, as a whole Angry feels somewhat disjointed and underdeveloped, a collection of hastily thrown together, incomplete ideas. It would

Prospero (Jo Bartlett) is exiled, bored and vengeful. Whipping up a magical storm to shipwreck his enemies and seek revenge was never going to be easy! But I believed Bartlett would grow into a smouldering tyrant. I also believed that, like the Tempest itself, Jo could whip her Prospero into shape.

When Ferdinand (Hannah Jessop) is washed ashore and separated from his party, feelings are stirred within Prospero’s daughter, Miranda (Michelle Pittoni), and so the fun begins. I’ve not enough space for all the comings and goings but this production is a real delight.

Ariel, the sprite, played by Carmella Brown, brings a wispy, magical and mischievous element. Playing the flute and singing a haunting melody, Brown moves across the stage with grace and never loses sight of her captivating character. The hilarious coupling of Kimberley Capero as Trinculo and Ceri Ashe as Stephano were a comedy delight. They brought energy, passion and so much laughter; a great pairing.

Also crisp and sharp with their witty asides were Antonio (Shereener Browne) and Sebastian (Afsana Syyed).

At the interval my companion regaled the man next to her with how much she was enjoying The Tempest.

I’m glad she did because it could have been a tad awkward when it turned out he was the director Dylan Lincoln.

Phew!

Lincoln has tried to ‘redress the balance of British theatre’ through the ‘Controlled Chaos Theatre Company.’

And this all-female Shakespeare is one production that he hopes will go towards that redressing. The lack of diversity on and off stage is always noticeable and I am constantly aware of the voices I hear in ‘theatre world’ so am totally with the director on this!

It is a comedy so it all ends well, so with that I suggest a visit and a laugh at the Brockley Jack… But be careful when talking to strangers – please!

EACH YEAR since 2003 local people have been voting for the people, events and places they have felt worthy of a blue plaque.

The Bermondsey Uprising

The summer 12,000 women walked out to support striking dock workers DURING A particularly hot summer in 1911, thousands of women downed tools and walked out of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe’s factories in protest against “appalling” working conditions and pay, writes Chiara Giordano...

A feeling of discontent had grown in the area among both the female factory workers and male dockers – and they had decided enough was enough.

The women’s strike saw 12,000 workers walk out of factories on the first day – and eventually 14,000 marched to a demonstration at Southwark Park, where famous faces such as suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst spoke.

This was to become known as the Bermondsey Uprising.

The strike could not have happened without Ada Salter – Bermondsey’s first female councillor elected in 1909 – and her friends Mary Macarthur, who set up the National Federation of Women Workers (NFWW), and Eveline Lowe, who was the first woman elected chair of London County Council.

“It was an age that was actually worse for women than the previous ones because of Victorian hypocritical morals,” historian and author Graham Taylor explained.

“They were actually worse off because of industrial revolution which forced them into machinery jobs, whereas 200 years ago in women’s industry they

used to do basket weaving at home and they had skilled jobs and got money in.

“This factory work was not like factory work now – there were no trade unions and that meant the conditions were appalling.”

Some factories such as Peek Frean biscuit factory, which was run by Quakers, weren’t as bad as others such as Pink’s [jam factory],” Taylor explained. Many women were injured in the factories because of a lack of health and safety, and they worked long hours for little pay. “Round here there were jam factories and the jars into which the jam was forced was a very poor quality glass and it would explode so lots of women were blinded by flying glass or had their faces shredded by it and even bulbs in lights would explode,” said Taylor.

“In the can factories where they made the tins or metal boxes they had these presses and there were no guards on them so women lost their fingers and their thumbs and sometimes an arm.

“The docks were also terrible for the

men because they used to keep the wages down since docking work was intermittent and dependent on how much trade there was, so dockers had to really compete to get a job and had to accept the lowest wages and there would even be fights among the men to get the jobs.”

From 1908, Ada Salter and Eveline Lowe went round the factories in the area to see if they could get the workers to join the NFWW – Mary Macarthur’s women-only trade union.

“They had very few women join but they made them all aware that there was a trade union they could join which was the crucial factor so when the big moment came they could walk out of the factories knowing they could get support,” said Taylor.

In July of that year, the men came out of the docks on strike – and in August, completely out of the blue, most of the women walked out of the factories.

“In just a few days 12,000 women walked out and all the factories came to a halt,” said Taylor.

“What happened was the women had become aware that if they came out on strike they would not be without assistance. Ada set up food depots and kitchens all along the river right from London Bridge down to Woolwich to help the dockers and the women.”

“Then, an unprecedented thing happened. Some of the dockers started to get offered settlements towards the end of August but most of them refused to accept until the women’s demands were met.

“That was a real turning point in British history – men and women acting together as equals for the first time.”

The strike, which lasted weeks, saw an increase in wages in all of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe’s 20 to 30 factories.

Even Pink’s settled in the end – although it was the last to do so.

Ada received a gold medal from the trade unions for her work following another dockers’ strike in 1912 and was made an honorary life member of the union now known as the GMB.

It also has a secret room tucked away down some stairs and along a corridor where Wine Guru Pippa Penny runs regular wine tastings that combine fun and knowledge, and which is where myself and Nina The Ballerina began our great night out.

Five glasses of different wines were poured for each of the guests, before Pippa gave us an interesting and informative talk about wine. From what our Guru revealed, and the notes she issued to us with info such as: ‘smells of mango and wet brown paper bag’, we had to taste each one and decide what wine it was. And that’s when the competitiveness kicked in. Ladies wanted to outdo their beaux; friends wanted to be more knowledgeable than their mates, and I didn’t want to ‘lose’ to Nina as I would not have heard the last of it! All the fun that Pippa had set up for us had now evaporated; score cards were turned face down so as not to be seen by the ‘enemy’, we eavesdropped on conversations in order to glean information, we looked in horror as one of our number actually used the spittoon between each sip! Such waste!

After a very quick two hours we had completed all the wines and Ms Penny gave us the answers. It was a draw between Nina and I, which made us happy - No one wanted to lose, everyone wanted bragging rights. To everyone’s amazement the Riesling was deemed the favourite of the night, so expect that to be making a comeback soon.

From there we headed upstairs to the restaurant, where we sat by the kitchen and took in all the aromas and ordered a bottle of Malbec because Nina never looks further than a steak and red wine these days.

I, on the other hand, like to properly peruse a menu to see if there is anything special I have never tried.

There wasn’t, so I went for the Fixed Price Menu, which was LondonCured Salmon, which really melted in the mouth, with pickled bits that totally livened up the whole dish.

Nina started with Game Terrine with Quince Chutney and Sourdough Toast, a chunky, meaty, full plate of food that was enough to share. She then went on to another full, meaty

plate with the 10oz Rib Eye with chips, mushrooms and tomatoes.

For some reason she didn’t seem as enamoured with this steak as she has been with others, so I can only put that down to her not scoring more than me at the wine tasting… I had the Roasted Brixham Cod, which I

delights had a good send off.

Pippa will be back at Village East on March 14th and April 18th (Tickets £15).

On the next table were a group who were also at the wine tasting, and they were still debating whether the Chardonnay was better than the Cabernet Sauvignon, though much more boisterously now. At our table

Nina was still off her food so could hardly pull her weight with the sharing dessert of Flourless Chocolate Cake (How do they do that?) and a rather delectable Dulce de Leche Cheesecake.

Southwark Council (“the council”) adopted its cemetery strategy, in 2012, which sets out the council’s commitment to local burial in the borough. As part of this strategy, the council intends to develop an area of land in Camberwell Old Cemetery to make it more suitable for burial use. Fish aiming to get back on track

FISHER ARE back in league action this Saturday when Meridian visit St Paul’s in Rotherhithe.

The Bermondsey/Rotherhithe outfit haven’t been in competitive action since they suffered a blow to their promotion ambitions when they lost 3-0 at home to Kent Football United on February 10.

That result has left Dean Harrison’s side nine points off K Sports in second and ten off table-toppers Punjab United.

Fisher will be expected to get three

points against Meridian, who sit thirteenth in the SCEFL First Division table.

They will then turn their attentions to revenge next Wednesday against Forest Hill Park, who shocked the hosts when they claimed all three points at St Paul’s earlier this season.

Fisher boss Dean Harrison isn’t giving up on promotion this season after relegation at the end of 2016-17.

He told Kentish Football recently: “We’ll just keep going until it’s mathematically impossible. I feel there are definitely a few twists and turns left in this one.”

Hamlet get cup lift

DULWICH HAMLET put their recent league woes behind to move into the semi-finals of the London Senior Cup after a comfortable 4-2 win over Harrow Borough on Tuesday night.

Reise Allassani fired his side ahead in the fourteenth minute before the attacker was fouled and Ashley Carew slotted home from the penalty spot to double the lead in the 32nd minute.

Seven minutes later it was three, and it was a second for Carew who finished Nathan Ferguson’s cross to the net.

Hamlet continued their dominance after the break and it was little surprise when they made it 4-0 eighteen minutes from time, Kenny Beaney rifling home from the edge of the box.

The Harrow side pulled a goal back through George Moore three minutes later and added another consolation when Anthony O’Connor found the net in the last minute.

Hamlet will meet Balham in the last four of the competition.

On Saturday, Carew put Hamlet ahead against Enfield in their league clash in front of 2,158 fans at Champion Hill with a 63rd-minute free-kick.

But Sam Youngs equalised for the visitors with twelve minutes left to extend Hamlet’s winless run in the league to five games.

Hamlet are now third in the Bostick League Premier Division table, three points behind leaders Billericay Town, who have five games in hand.

James grabs silver for Southwark club

TOKEI JUDO club, from Southwark, enjoyed a good start to the year with one of its stars, Jimmy James, winning silver at the South Coast Senior Open at Worthing Sports Centre last Sunday.

James was competing in the 73kg weight category and though he hasn’t achieved his black belt, he found himself up against a number of black-belt opponents. He lost in the final, after a momentary lapse in concentration resulted in him being thrown.

For his black belt James needs to accumulate 100 points (up to ten for each win) and he picked up thirty points as well as securing his silver medal.

Tokei Judo Club train on Tuesday evening from 8pm to 9.45pm and Saturday morning from 10.30am until midday. A spokesman said: “It is a club with a large number of more mature players returning to the sport and new players are always welcome."

Stansfeld knocked off their stride by improved Sutton

STANSFELD’S RECENT good run came to an end at the London Hire Stadium against a much-improved Sutton Athletic side last weekend.

Stansfeld started brightly and had the better of the early exchanges, going close twice through headers from Lennie Wise and Harry Gamble with the latter’s hitting the outside of the post. After the early pressure Sutton played their way into the game and both sides had plenty of possession, though without creating any real chances.

With half-time fast approaching Sutton had a slice of luck – a handball was missed by the officials which allowed Conor Evans to go clean through on goal. He kept his cool and beat the advancing Lewis Collier to give Sutton a half-time lead.

In the second half Stansfeld went looking for an equaliser but came up against a determined Sutton defence and couldn’t make any headway. In the 72nd minute it was Sutton who got the next goal, James Sutherland bundling home

the ball from close range after a good Sutton move.

The game was over ten minutes later when Sutton were awarded a penalty, and Jack Howell stepped up and smashed the ball into the top corner to give Sutton all three points.

Man of the match: Lennie Wise Stansfeld’s Reserves made the long trip to Lydd Town Reserves worthwhile by coming away with a 3-2 win. Michael Zanelli with a brace and Mark McKenna were the scorers.

DOCKLANDS UNDER-8s continued their unbeaten run with two convincing wins over Brockley FC last weekend.

The side dominated the first half of the first game to go 3-0 up by the break. Henry Toomey with a brace and Ethan Maxwell were on target.

Brockley fought back in the second game but Docks held on for a convincing 4-1 win with a second-half goal from Lenny Davis.

Brockley came out strongly in the second game and the scores were level 0-0 at half-time.

But a strong second-half performance saw Docks earn a 3-1 win after goals from Davis, Tyler Andrews and Harry Edney.

Manager Tommy McCloud said: “The boys played some fantastic passing football and strong defensive performances from Oliver Matson and Billy Osman helped them earn two good wins.” Man of the match was Billy Osman.

Lionesses tamed by professional Arsenal side

MILLWALL LIONESSES boss Lee Burch said he was “really proud” of his players after they lost 1-0 to Arsenal in the fifth round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup last weekend.

A sole Beth Mead strike was the difference between semi-professional Millwall and the full-time professionals of Arsenal.

Arsenal also boasted England internationals Jordan Nobbs, Danielle Carter and Alex Scott in their line-up and they had defeated Millwall 5-2 earlier this season.

Burch was also without Jordan Butler and Georgie Giddings through illness and injury respectively, making their task even more difficult.

Arsenal went in front in the first half through Mead’s low drive past goalkeeper Sarah Quantrill. Quantrill and centre-back Leighanne Robe were outstanding as the Lionesses withstood fierce pressure to prevent their opponents adding to their lead.

“I’m really proud of the girls, they gave everything against a really top side, a team full of internationals and a fulltime side,” Burch said. “My girls have to go back to work tomorrow.

“Unfortunately we were missing a couple of players, and sometimes you need your big players in big moments to pop up and do something. In the final third we just didn’t have that.

“But everyone did so well, from the back they were class and worked really hard. I thought the first half we were really nervous and didn’t get the ball down and use it as well as we can do.

FRED ONYEDINMA finally scored his first Championship goal last weekend – and is determined there will be many more to come.

Onyedinma is still only 21 but made his debut in the division almost four years ago, in a 1-0 defeat to Blackpool in March 2014.

Onyedinma had been on the pitch just eleven minutes against Birmingham before scoring the 77th-minute winner which gave Millwall their third successive away league victory.

The young attacker has been in and out of the side this season, and the acquisition of Ben Marshall in January has added competition in the area he plays.

Onyedinma’s versatility means there are more opportunities for him to come on to make an impact in games. He can play on either flank or up front, and scored his goal from the left wing after replacing Marshall last weekend.

Onyedinma admitted he hasn’t always found it easy to wait for his chance, but is relieved to be off the mark in the second tier.

“It’s been a long while but I’m delighted with that and hopefully there are many more to come,” he said. “It was an important goal as well. It was a bit of a dead game and I thought it was going to be 0-0.

“When it’s nil-nil you’re thinking, ‘come on, put me on’. You want to try to do something to win the game. I’m happy that I could do that. It was in front of the away fans as well and everyone came down to celebrate. It made their journey worth it.

“I’ve had to be patient, even though it is difficult. I just need to keep working hard and hopefully get my chances and prove to everyone what I can do.

“I look back at games and see what I did and what I can do better. If I’m up against a full-back I don’t focus too much on that player beforehand. I focus more on what I can do.

MILLWALL’S 1-0 victory at Birmingham on Saturday afternoon saw them extend their winning run on the road in the league to three games. Having not won away from The Den all season until January 20 when they defeated Leeds 4-3, the Lions have since won at the Madejski Stadium and now St Andrews, against three sides that were tipped to challenge for promotion.

The result also meant that they extended their unbeaten league run to six games, and consolidated their position in fourteenth position in the Championship, closer to the top six than the bottom three.

“We’re on a good run right now and everyone is working hard and keeping positive. We want to keep carrying on the run and who knows how where it might take us.”

Onyedinma was on the second team last Thursday in Millwall’s elevenversus-eleven practice game, an important part of their preparations for the next fixture.

“It was a hard week’s work,”

Onyedinma said. “We take that into games and thankfully last weekend it paid off and I was able to get the winner.

“The second side played very well.

Those games are important for us, and we always try to take what we have learned into the next match. It’s working for us at the moment.”

While Onyedinma is still only at the start of his career, he shared the pitch

last Saturday for the first time with Tim Cahill who is almost seventeen years older than him.

Like all of the Millwall squad, Onyedinma has been impressed with the Lions icon.

He said: “The first time we met he introduced himself but didn’t really need to. He is a really nice person, he’s very down-to-earth. He’s done everything in the game.

“He looks out for young players as well and gives us good advice. That’s really important from my point of view.

“He’s still running around like he’s much younger and keeping fit. I admire him for that. He’s so humble, and he’s chilled and laid-back as well.

“TC [Tony Craig] was exactly the same, they look out for you. It’s nice to have people there that genuinely care for your career.”

League One last February. It was also his first-ever goal in the Championship, almost four years after his league debut in the division.

For all their possession Birmingham had just one shot on goal, a statistic that made a mockery of Steve Cotterill’s claims they were the better side.

From being one of the relegation favourites, Millwall can now eye a tophalf finish. That would be a remarkable feat considering that fourteen months ago they were 20th in League One, above Oldham in the relegation zone only on goal difference.

After just 32 games of this campaign, Millwall already have more points than they picked up in the entire 2014-15 season.

Birmingham could have nicked a point in injury-time, when Jordan Archer saved from Harlee Dean.

Millwall completed their first league double over Birmingham, only their second away win at St Andrew’s in 50 years, but second in succession.

"It's three wins in a row on the road, which isn't bad for a team which couldn't win away from home at the start of the season,” Harris said afterwards.

They will be confident they can make it four at struggling Burton and the next target is to reach 50 points. They got 56 under Kenny Jackett in the 2012-13 Championship season, and it wouldn’t be a surprise were they to surpass that total.

Fred gives Birmingham the Blues but then, as former Millwall midfielder Eamon Dunphy once said, if you want entertainment, go to the cinema.

Blues were probably the slightly better side in the first half, though George Saville did come closest to breaking the deadlock when his header was cleared off the line.

It’s a sign of a good team that they remained defensively solid even when not playing well, the defence marshalled by the excellent Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper.

Later, Hutchinson turned goalprovider, sending a long ball to Fred Onyedinma and he outmuscled the opposition defence to fire in a shot that David Stockdale saved, before Onyedinma scored the rebound.

EVERYWHERE JED Wallace looks in the Millwall dressing room, there are players who embody the club’s spirit.

And Wallace isn’t afraid to talk up the qualities of his team-mates.

He reveals his admiration for Tim Cahill, 38-years-old yet still trying to improve every day in training. He looks up to Steve Morison and Shaun Williams, the latter who lives four doors away from Wallace in Biggin Hill and with whom he travels to training with every day.

He talks up James Meredith’s prospects of inclusion in the Australia squad, praises Ben Marshall for leaving Wolves when he could have chosen to stay and ride the “Premier League wave”. Former skipper Tony Craig gets a mention.

But it’s Cahill who has made the biggest recent impact on Wallace.

“He has been a breath of fresh air,” Wallace says. “I travel with Willo and we talk about him in the car, all he’s done in his career. He’s here rolling his sleeves up in the pissing rain, training with us.

“To look at someone who is, in my eyes, a superstar with what he has achieved in his career, do this at 38 years old when he doesn’t need to, shows that the manager knows what he is doing. He’s getting the right players and people in.

“It’s no coincidence that since the new players have come in the training standards have gone up and it has shown on the pitch because we have been getting results.

“I look at myself and ask if I just got in a lull, was I coasting through training? I knew I was going to play most games.

Cahill has come in and it’s given me a kick up the bum. I’m looking at someone who is 15 years older than me, he’s played in the Premier League, he’s got all the money in the world, he’s done everything there is to do, the things I aspire to do in football, and at 38 years old he’s showing the professionalism and determination to still improve.

“At any level you need competition for places, that’s only going to help. Marshy coming in, for example, has made me want to play better. I think we’ve shown in the last five games that we’ve gone up 20 per cent. Marshy could easily be sat on his arse riding the Premier League wave with Wolves, but he’s thought, ‘actually, no, I’m going to get playing’.

“It’s the best changing room I’ve ever played in. You could throw in whoever from down the road in the pub and they’d get on with everyone. There’s no one with a big ego. In terms of modern-day football it’s a ridiculously down-to-earth dressing room. It’s a group of normal boys.

“When people do meet us, at service stations on the way to games, they are surprised at how normal we are, because of the perception of footballers nowadays.

“Cahill has come in and it’s refreshing for such a player to be such a nice, normal lad. It’s important. Myself and the rest of the team look up to Moro and what he has achieved in his career and with Millwall.

People like Willo and Tony Craig, we look up to them.

“I was speaking to my family about Cahill, and I said it was an absolute nobrainer. Even if he didn’t play a minute or a game it still gives everyone a boost and is going to help us on the pitch. You see him warm up and the crowd get on their

feet, that gives us a boost.

“He now has a pivotal role to play, he has come on and done well. I feel very happy to have someone like him here. I’m just waiting now for the manager to come out of retirement so we can see him, Moro and Timmy Cahill up front!”

Another player Wallace feels deserves more attention is Meredith, and he is sure the extra spotlight on the club via the arrival of Cahill could help the defender.

He explains: “Timmy knows Mezza and it’s going to help Mezza a lot. How he doesn’t get into the Australian squad is beyond me. He has been our unsung hero this year.

“He puts in a seven- or eight-out-of-ten performance every week and it goes unnoticed. Cahill is obviously going to bring a lot of attention to Millwall, and I fully expect Mezza to be in the Australia squad. There’s no reason why he shouldn’t be, he’s done brilliantly for us this year.

“I knew from playing against him last year what a good player he was. He has come in and looked like he has played in the Championship for the last ten years.

“I couldn’t praise the boys enough. If I were a football supporter, especially of a club like Millwall, I would want to see 22, 23, hard-working boys earning their money and wanting to run through a brick wall for this football club. That’s why I think the fans are enjoying watching us so much this season, they can relate to us.

“Even if we don’t play well, we’re sure as hell going to run through brick walls

and give everything we can. It’s been very refreshing to be part of such an honest group of lads.”

Most of the credit for assembling that kind of group has to go to Harris. It isn’t enough to be a good player, Millwall also want to find good people to represent the club.

Harris can be tough, but Wallace explains it’s never for show, and in Harris and Morison they have people for whom honesty is one of the most important qualities.

“Football is football, it’s the same as if you were a lawyer or worked down at Sainsbury’s, if you’re a nice bloke then it goes a long way,” Wallace says. “There is no one who could say 99.99 per cent of the people who work at this club aren’t nice people.

“The manager isn’t someone who comes in and has a go at someone for no reason, it’s always constructive. People think a manager comes in and throws bottles around everywhere, but it doesn’t really work like that.

“We know ourselves when we don’t play well. In Moro we’ve got a leader who knows how this football club works.

When Moro hasn’t played well we’ve really struggled. Last Saturday, at halftime, he put his hands up and said, ‘boys, I’ve been terrible first half’. Second half he comes out and wins 90 per cent of his headers and we look a different team.

“People like me, Sav [George Savile], Thommo [Ben Thompson] want to push

on and do well in our careers, and then there are other people who have done very well. It’s a good mix of people who strive to get to the top.”

Millwall are close to securing their place in the Championship for next season, and with the current rate of progress will then be attempting to establish themselves as a top-half side.

But would a challenge for the play-offs in the next season or two be out of the question?

“You’ve got to be realistic, but at the same time Huddersfield went up last year,” Wallace adds. “They did it a very different way. I love the gaffer but I don’t see him signing someone from the German third division that you’ve never heard of, it’s not really his style.

“For Millwall to be pushing towards the top half of the Championship when there are teams spending 30, 40 million in a season, is a massive testament to how far we have come and how hard we work on the training ground.

“Without a doubt the reason why we’ve done as well as we have is because of the togetherness in the dressing room, that shows on the pitch. There have been times this year when things have gone against us and individuals have struggled for form, wrong refereeing decisions, but we’ve all pulled together. The manager has kept us together, we come in here and work hard and we’re getting what we deserve now.

points better off and that would be very interesting. But for us now our next target is 50 points as quick as we can and climb that table.

“We’re all here for the same purpose. We want to stay in the Championship and be playing at the big grounds that we have been playing at.

“If I find myself on the bench and Fergie [Shane Ferguson] plays right wing and scores two goals, I’m not sitting at home crying about it, I’m delighted. I want us all to push in the same direction, and that’s to make this club successful.

“The manager has stressed that the subs have to support the players playing. I’ve been in where Fergie and Thommo are now not getting into the squad, and it is very disheartening. But football changes so quickly. You never know when you’re going to be in.

“These people have the right to be disappointed. Thommo, Fergie, TC when he was here have played 70, 80 games the last two years and done very well.

“The one thing I would say about this manager is he makes everyone travel together, stay together. I’ve been in positions at Wolves where the manager has made me feel like I should be making teas and coffees for the boys, where there is no respect.

“That’s not how football should work, there should always be respect somewhere along the line. Here, the manager and the players respect each other.”

THESE ARE giddy times at Millwall.

All of a sudden after their 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night you realised they were just eight points away from the play-offs.

After Millwall got their first away win this season, at Leeds on January 20, they were twelve points off the top six.

One journalist asked Neil Harris if a challenge for those spots is possible after they had come from behind to defeat the Owls, and he responded, “no, no, no, let’s not get carried away”.

Harris revealed the target he set before the season started was 50 points. They should easily hit that total, but the confidence they are playing with hints they could go well beyond it.

Lee Gregory, who scored Millwall’s equaliser against Wednesday, said afterwards they currently feel

“invincible”. They go to Burton this Saturday, and Harris needed no invitation to refer back to the game between the sides earlier this season.

Jed Wallace was sent off, Harris thought unfairly, and the club launched an appeal that was rejected. Harris said Burton “robbed” them. Harris doesn’t waste his words and those ones were as much aimed to enter his players’ subconscious as anything else before they face the bottom side.

It would be a ridiculous achievement, even to challenge for a play-off place a year after getting promoted, with one of the smallest budgets in the division.

With five minutes left last season, remember, Millwall were seventh in League One. The improvement between then and now has been drastic. This is a side that is full of character and characters, of self-belief and a stubborn determination.

They had dominated Wednesday but found themselves trailing at half-time after Joey Pelupessy’s strike.

Gregory and Moro strike as Lions continue to defy expectations

It’s also a mature group with a manager perfectly capable of judging the mood. Harris said there was no panic at half-time, no hairdryers and no kitchen utensils flying over heads in the dressing room.

“There were no teacups getting overturned in our dressing room at halftime. Our shape was excellent but we just missed that end product,” Harris explained.

“I knew we were on the front foot and were the better side.

“Second half the attitude was outstanding. We were aggressive in what we did and scored two great goals.

“It is a platform to build on as we are chasing 50 points as quickly as possible.”

Whatever was said, there was a marked improvement, a stepping-up of intensity exemplified by George Saville.

The midfielder played with fury, often in danger of crossing the line, and referee Peter Bankes had to have a word with him after one too many outbursts.

At that moment, Harris was stepping onto the pitch to flick the ball a few yards back to where he thought Wednesday’s free-kick should be taken from. After finishing warning Saville, Bankes then had to have a word with Harris.

The crowd loved it all, and were further inflamed moments later when a David Jones handball in the box from Wallace’s cross went unpunished.

These players know exactly what is needed to spark an atmosphere, and Ben Marshall also got in the mood by crashing into a tackle that had the fans rising to their feet. Harris mentioned some weeks ago that new players have to “get” Millwall, not the other way around. Marshall clearly gets it and he is playing his way into Lions fans’ affections.

He almost got his first goal for Millwall, but saw a shot deflected onto the post in the first half.

Millwall were the better side, but a defensive lapse when they left

Pelupessy free on the left three minutes before the break cost them. The hosts thought there could have been offside, but Pelupessy played to the whistle, before cutting inside to hammer a vicious drive into the far corner beyond Jordan Archer.

Then came that change of tone from Millwall, set by Saville. Seven minutes into the second half Millwall scored the type of textbook set-piece goal that must have had Harris purring. Simplicity itself, yet hard to defend against.

Marshall lifted a free-kick to the back post, Jake Cooper nodded it back across goal, and Gregory headed in his eighth of the season.

A second Millwall goal seemed inevitable then, the home side pouring forward with menace. It arrived in the 63rd minute. Wallace contested a ball on the right and when it broke loose, Jordan Thorniley lay prone. Wallace gathered possession to run into the box and coolly cross to the back post where the unmarked Steve Morison slammed into an empty net.

Millwall players celebrated, but Thorniley stayed down. The game was held up for nine minutes as the defender was treated, before he was eventually removed on a stretcher. Wallace had accidentally caught him with his boot, and Thorniley later went to hospital.

It was suggested to Owls boss Jos Luhukay that perhaps Millwall could have kicked the ball out of play. But he admitted he hadn’t known the extent of Thorniley’s injury. Neither could Wallace have, and there were no appeals from Wednesday’s players.

There were thirteen minutes of injurytime at the end of the game, time for two of Millwall’s unsung heroes to show their worth. James Meredith, such a determined player, won a throw-in off a Wednesday attacker in the 100th minute. And a couple of minutes later Mahlon Romeo thundered into a challenge that had the crowd on their feet, and Wallace roaring his appreciation for the young defender’s intervention.

It was a pulsating end to the contest.

Substitute Lucas Joao almost grabbed an equaliser but headed just wide from a corner.

Morison then somehow had the energy to stride forward, but he shot straight at Joe Wildsmith.

It was Millwall’s first win of the year at home in the league, and just imagine where they would be if they had taken all their chances this season and not been on the end of some blatantly incorrect refereeing decisions.

It has already been a remarkable campaign, and with a run of favourablelooking fixtures coming up it could get even better.

Maybe we are getting carried away.

What is certain is that there will be no relegation battle. And without that pressure who knows what Millwall can achieve.

“Leeds was a special one because it was the first of the season and special in the manner that it came. Reading was a completely dominant display.

“Last Saturday we weren’t at our best, especially in the first half, but found a way to win the game, deservedly in the end because we created the clear-cut chances.

“Burton, like Birmingham, are fighting for their lives, keeping clean sheets.

“They are a tough nut, they don’t lose a lot of games by more than one goal. It’s going to be another difficult one but we’re full of confidence on the road.”

NEIL HARRIS has revealed that Byron Webster could return to competitive action before the end of the season.

Webster has been out since damaging cruciate ligaments against Barnsley last September, and was given only an outside chance of playing before the end of the campaign.

Webster, 30, has recently started

running outside and working with Millwall’s fitness team as he builds up the strength in his knee.

The centre-back is out of contract in the summer, but Harris insisted Webster’s only focus is on getting back to full fitness.

But the Millwall boss hinted there could be the offer of a new deal, as he expects that even if Webster does not return this season he will be part of pre-season preparations in the summer.

Harris praised Webster for the way he has handled his recovery.

“Byron’s sole focus is on getting himself fit and back into the

training group,” he said. “He has done unbelievably well, he’s a fantastic character and has been a great leader, even though he’s out injured.

“He’s at all the home games, the majority of the away games. He enjoys being around the group.

He’s been dedicated and professional with his rehab.

“I think with him it’s just one step at a time. The next one is seeing the surgeon in a couple of weeks and getting the all-clear to get back to training.

“Then it’s a question of him sustaining that progress and getting

some under-23s football. Hopefully that will be before the end of the season. At the moment we foresee him being able to do that.

“It’s not set in stone and we’ve not put any pressure on Byron so far. He puts pressure on himself, he sets deadlines and pushes himself because he want to get back fit.

“It would be great for all parties if we could get him some minutes before the end of the season. But if not and he’s fit by the summer then he’s got pre-season to hit the ground running.

“We’re really pleased with how it’s gone for him so far.”

The Lions go to Burton having won three games away from home in the league, after not getting their first victory outside of The Den until January 20.

Despite Millwall exceeding a lot of people’s expectations, Wallace still feels “frustrated” they aren’t higher in the table.

But he admits they are full of confidence before they go to the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday.

“It does get in your head, when you haven’t won away from home in twelve games it does bother you,” Wallace said. “Every way game you think, ‘oh, Christ’, whereas now we think we’re going to win every game.

“We’ve overachieved massively but I still feel frustrated. We let ourselves down so much before Christmas, because even if we had five more points now we would be looking up.

“As a promoted team, to do what we’ve done, to be above Hull, Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday, within touch of Leeds and Norwich with the spending power that those clubs have, is a credit to everyone, from the tea lady to the gaffer.

“I said it two years ago when I arrived that it was a club that deserved to be in the Championship and we deserve to be here. It’s an exciting time to be part of t h i s club.”
