Millwall fans’ help shows true spirit

M

any negative things are written about Millwall fans, but this week’s story on how they have been helping a young West Ham supporter shows their true spirit.

They have set their fierce rivalry with the Hammers aside to raise money to send three-year-old cancer sufferer to America.

Isla Caton has neuroblastoma, which she is bravely fighting. She will continue to have chemotherapy for the next five months, and once that is over, her mum Nicola says, there is no further treatment available for her in the UK. The family are looking to raise £192,000 to send her to the US for a vaccine, which could help prevent the cancer returning once she is in remission.

Millwall fans have stepped up to help.

Some have been given refunds from match tickets and suggested it be given to Isla.

Now mum Nicola has thanked them. She said: “My family are life-long West Ham supporters and after all these years of the two sides hating each other, Isla’s come along and built a bridge.”

Elephant delay

he council vote on plans to demolish and rebuild Elephant and Castle shopping centre has been delayed again.

Southwark’s planning committee was due to make a decision on the proposals on Tuesday evening, after an initial seven-hour public meeting saw it voted against by a narrow margin on January 19.

Developer Delancey requested the delay in order for concerns to be addressed, for a ‘positive conclusion’ for all. We wait to see how this will happen.

Evelina Children’s Hospital calls on locals to put on most colourful clothes and help raise cash for MRI

EVELINA CHILDREN’S Hospital is calling on local people, schoolchildren and workers to dress in their most colourful clothes to help them buy a new MRI scanner.

The hospital, based on the grounds of St Thomas’ Hospital, hopes to raise £15,000 from this February’s Get Colourful’ fundraising campaign.

Each year the hospital holds a dress down day where staff and visitors donate £2 to wear bright clothing and raise funds for seriously ill children and their families.

This year’s event takes place at the hospital on Thursday, February 22, with staff and visitors told to wear whatever is brightest in their wardrobe - whether a tiger onesie or jazzy socks.

Now Evelina’s fundraising manager, Rebecca Kemp, is asking schools, clubs and offices to take part with their own Get Colourful day to help the hospital reach its target.

Thirty-four organisations have already signed up to hold their own fundraisers throughout February.

Ms Kemp said: “Banish winter blues and organise a Get Colourful day for Evelina London, helping us raise funds and awareness. It’s super

easy and fun to do and everyone can get involved.

“On our shopping list at the moment is a new MRI scanner.

Funds raised from Get Colourful will go towards projects like this, which are above and beyond what the NHS can provide.

“We really need our whole

community to get in involved!”

Evelina Children’s Hospital is one of only two specialist children's hospitals in London and provides one in five of childhood kidney transplants in the UK. Last year its staff cared for more than 55,000 young patients, with

many coming from Southwark.

Council agrees developer’s request to postpone to ‘address concerns’

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL’S planning committee this week voted to delay its decision on controversial plans to knock down and rebuild Elephant and Castle shopping centre after developers put in a lastminute request for extra time to make a better offer.

Delancey, the developers behind the regeneration, asked Southwark Council on Monday to postpone the final decision on the controversial proposal until March.

At Tuesday evening’s planning committee meeting, councillors voted to agree, meaning the final vote on the future of the shopping centre is likely be made in early March before the upcoming council elections.

The surprise move from Delancey came after a seven-hour public meeting on January 19, when councillors voted against passing the development by a narrow margin of four to three, with one abstention.

In the current draft plans, only 33 out of 979 proposed new homes are at social rent levels, and there are no guarantees to existing local traders.

But at 9.30am on Monday, with just a day to go, Delancey issued a statement sent to the News requesting that the final decision be halted until next month.

It said: “We have suggested all parties agree that the final consideration of the planning application be deferred until early March 2018, in order to give every opportunity for the key concerns to be addressed and for these discussions to reach a mutually acceptable, positive conclusion for all.”

Just hours before Tuesday’s meeting, Labour councillors for East Walworth posted online a letter they claimed was from Delancey, outlining new

concessions.

These included 116 social housing homes, longer-term support for the bingo centre, and a temporary boxpark so displaced shops and restaurants can keep open during the demolition.

A Delancey spokesperson confirmed the letter posted on social media had been sent by Delancey to Southwark Council, but declined to comment on its contents, telling the News: "Discussions are on-going."

On Tuesday night, demonstrators gathered outside the council’s offices calling on the committee to respect the previous vote, and celebrate rumours that Delancey might table a new offer

with salsa dancing and a game of bingo.

Tanya Murat, from the group Defend Council Housing, told the News: “Tonight’s decision was a watershed moment.

“It was evidence that the developer and the council had no choice but to listen to the views of the community."

However, many protesters were still concerned. Liz Wyatt, from Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth, said: “It is hard to know what to make of the decision to postpone.

“We want a stronger statement of support for the community.”

Liberal Democrat councillor David Noakes said: “We want to see the

Elephant & Castle redeveloped.

“We are however pleased that the plans as they currently stand have not been passed and will be reconsidered.

“We only get one chance to get regeneration right at the Elephant and Castle and it is important that it delivers not just for new residents but also delivers for existing residents and independent businesses.”

A spokesperson for Delancey said: “We welcome Southwark Council’s decision to defer the decision of our planning application. Our proposals offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to deliver essential regeneration to a key London location, which will bring almost 1,000 new homes to a site where none currently exist, desperately needed new transport infrastructure with a new Northern Line entrance and ticket hall, and ensure London College of Communication, UAL’s long term future in Elephant and Castle.

“We recognise that concerns have been raised about our proposals and this extra time will give us the opportunity for these to be addressed. The issues are resolvable if all parties continue to engage in this positive and constructive manner. We will continue our work with Cathedrals and East Walworth Ward Councillors, Southwark Borough Council and other interested local parties to reach a mutually acceptable and positive conclusion.”

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and New Homes, said: “We welcome the planning committee’s decision to defer. We remain committed to finding a solution for a new shopping centre and home for UAL’s London College of Communication that works for everyone and look forward to the developer bringing forward substantive changes to their application.”

Launch of fine scheme for engine idling

DRIVERS WHO ignore warnings not to leave their engines idling will be now be fined as part of new measures to tackle deadly air pollution across Southwark.

From Wednesday, 31 January, parking wardens will issue an £80 Penalty Charge Notice to backed-up car, bus, taxi or lorry drivers who refuse to switch off their engines when asked.

Southwark Council said that by turning off their engines drivers can reduce fumes laden with pollutants, especially near schools. Pollution from vehicle exhausts can cause asthma, heart disease and lung problems.

Councillors Maisie Anderson, Southwark’s Cabinet Member for Public

Health and Social Regeneration, and Ian Wingfield, Cabinet Member for Environment and the Public Realm, celebrated the start of the new scheme with teachers and students at Oliver Goldsmith Primary School.

Headteacher Anita Asumadu, said: “Clean air would improve the health of the children at our school and everyone can help. The best way to improve your health is to choose to cycle or walk, but another effective way to reduce pollution is by switching off idling engines.”

Southwark Council's plans were announced in November last year. The policy was first taken up by Westminster, and Sadiq Khan encouraged other councils to follow suit.

The council plans to introduce more clean air measures in 2018.

Fire station school gets go ahead

A SECONDARY school is expected to open on the site of the old Southwark fire station next year, after plans were rubber stamped this week.

Developer Hadston put forward plans for a 900-place secondary school, 250place sixth form, a sports hall and 199 homes on the Southwark Bridge Road site last year.

But, despite parents saying the area was crying out for the school, the plans were left hanging in the balance because they did not include affordable housing.

After paying £54million for the site in 2015, Hadston said it was not viable to deliver affordable housing as well as the school and sports facilities.

Parents who tirelessly campaigned for the school delivered a petition to the Mayor of London at City Hall just before Christmas, signed by hundreds of children and adults.

The parents had their prayers answered on Tuesday when a planning committee decided to approve the plans.

The new Haberdashers’ Aske’s Borough Academy will be a mixed-sex non-selective 900-place secondary school and 250-place sixth form.

It is expected to open in temporary accommodation in September 2019 but will later move to a permanent twostorey building and admit 180 children a year, growing year on year.

The development will also see 199 homes built, including a mix of one, two and three bedrooms, as well as converted fire station cottages for family homes.

The residential building would be ten storeys in height at its tallest point.

A green space and a sports centre with a multi-use games area and outdoor artificial pitch for use by both the school and community are also part of the plans.

The News contacted Hadston for a comment but received no response.

WINTER SALE ‘Lion of London Bridge’ avoids jail after rant By court reporter

‘LION OF London Bridge’ Roy Larner – hailed a hero after fighting off three terrorists in Borough Market – has avoided jail for a racist rant at a Southwark MP’s office.

The 48-year-old was repeatedly stabbed as he fought with Islamic terrorists who killed eight and injured 48 others in London Bridge and Borough Market on June 3.

The Lions fan is famously said to have shouted 'F*** you, I'm Millwall' as he fought with the killers in the Black & Blue bar and restaurant.

But as he recovered from his serious injuries, a video emerged of him spitting at a black photographer and shouting abuse at anti-Brexit protestors in Elephant and Castle on February 20 last year, months before the attack.

Inner London Crown Court heard how Larner said 'F***ing foreign c****’ before leaning in towards the photographer and spitting at him.

Then, a little over a month after his heroics during the London Bridge attack, Larner launched into a racist outburst at Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle’s office in Jamaica Road.

Speaking in court, prosecutor Carol Summers said: “On 13 July last year, it was around about midday that the defendant entered the office of his Labour MP, Neil Coyle.

“He then spoke with a member of staff at the front door and said ‘Sadiq Khan shouldn't even be in the country’ and called him ‘a pile of s***’.

“The staff member said ‘I'm a Muslim’.

“The defendant went on to say that

‘All Muslims are the same – scum’, he then referred to Muslims as being ‘pig-eating c****’.

“He made a shotgun shooting gesture with a rolled up newspaper towards the ground.”

Defence lawyer Christopher SurteesJones said Larner accepted “the words are disgusting and it is very, very wrong and he feels shame for his behaviour on these two occasions”.

The judge said: “You are entitled to express your views, as they are entitled to express theirs, and they cannot expect everyone to agree with them.

“But nobody should be subjected to the kind of racist abuse, also involving spitting, that this complainant was.

“But then, ironically, you showed that you can bring great benefit because before you were arrested you became a national hero on 3 June.

“And of course you cannot use that for the rest of your life, but it is a side of your character that I must – and do – take into account.

“As you heard me say to your counsel, it is no excuse that you were a victim of a Muslim attack for you to behave in that way to people of the Muslim faith.”

Larner, of Ferndale Road, Brixton, admitted racially-aggravated common assault in respect of the incident on February 20, and religiouslyaggravated harassment on July 13.

He was sentenced to eight weeks, suspended for twelve months, for spitting on the photographer and fined £50 for his anti-Islam abuse.

In addition he will submit to a rehabilitation requirement for anger management and diversity awareness, and he is banned from attending Neil Coyle MP’s office for two years.

Woman who helps people as she jogs given special Points of Light award by Theresa May

A PECKHAM woman who has clocked up 1,600 kilometres jogging around the borough carrying out good deeds has been given a special award by the Prime Minister.

Beth Hoskins, a genetic scientist at Great Ormond Street Hospital, was nominated for the Points of Light award as the first GoodGym volunteer to complete 500 ‘good deeds’, since joining the Southwark branch in January 2014.

Beth received the award, given to outstanding volunteers by Theresa May to celebrate their valuable work in the community, on Tuesday night.

Instead of hitting the gym, Beth runs every week to see an isolated 64-yearold called Paul. She is part of GoodGym, a community of runners all over the UK who work out while helping others.

She has also helped turf the roof of the Southbank, carry eight tonnes of woodchip in Queen Elizabeth Park, and move a pirate ship climbing frame for a community garden Plaistow.

Her other voluntary activities include delivering food donations to Vauxhall food bank and sorting donated clothes for the Camberwell Salvation Army.

However, fans got in touch with fan on the board Micky Simpson, asking if their refunds could instead be donated to Isla or young Leeds fan Toby Nye, who also has the same

illness.

“I put that to the club and they agreed,” he said. “This is very rare for Millwall fans: to jump on to promoting a little West Ham fan is massive.”

SOME OF East Street Market’s most fascinating personalities have been immortalised in a new photography book, The Walworth Road, published this week.

Swiss-born Sylvie Goy, 46, spent two years chronicling life on ‘The Lane’ from 2005 to 2007, just as a project to revamp the historic market went underway.

The East-Dulwich based photographer said: “I hope that people will find the book a really interesting archive of Walworth Road’s characters, and an insight into what a traditional market and the surrounding area is like before gentrification completely takes over.”

One of her pictures is of 76-year-old Melvin, an OAP-by-day and selfproclaimed ‘female impersonator’ by-night.

Well-known Melvin performed as ‘Melvina’ in sparkly numbers he found on Walworth Road’s many charity shops.

Ms Goy recalls seeing Melvin propping up a bar alone, with wig wrapped in a Tesco carrier bag, ‘devouring’ a hot cross bun.

He told her: “I don’t eat anything all day so I have a good figure for the show.”

She also recalls a ‘gentleman with a spring in his step’ called Fred, who often sported a flat-cap. When she took his picture he confided: “I never married. I fell in love once but she broke my heart. I never bothered since.”

The book also features traders who traced their family history on East Street back generations.

One poignant image of Celia, whose family had run a stall at the market for over a hundred years, shows her last day of trading before packing up for good.

Another Walworth institution immortalised by Ms Goy’s camera was Sea Breeze fish bar, run by Swiss-born Helen and her partner, Greek-Cypriot Michael.

Opened in 1967, it was the last of their chain of chippies across south London when it shut in 2011.

Ms Goy was studying at Central St Martins for a postgraduate degree in photography when she began photographing street life in Walworth.

Originally from Lausanne in Switzerland, she has lived in south east London for 25 years.

She told the News: “I happened to be at East Street Market one day and took my first portrait. I immediately thought I needed to come back and take some more.

“It appealed to me as an area which is quite close to central London but still has a lot of character.

“It was always an ambition to

capture the people of south London, the spirit of the place, and the real eccentric characters who have such quirky vernacular.

“Some people were worried I was working for the Inland Revenue at

first,” she laughs. “But after weeks and weeks of going there and just walking about, taking pictures and approaching people, I soon got to know the locals.”

East Street Market officially started

trading in 1880, but it is believed there has been a market on the site since the Sixteenth Century.

The market also proudly sports a blue plaque in honour of Walworthborn Charlie Chaplin.

Ms Goy’s photo series is currently on display at 55 East Café, where the book launch takes place today, Thursday, February 1.

KING’S COLLEGE Hospital continues to ‘require improvement’, the health watchdog has found.

The Care Quality Commission found the NHS trust required improvement for being safe, responsive, and well-led, following an inspection in September and October.

However, it was rated ‘good’ for being effective and caring, and some areas were found to be ‘outstanding’, including the iMobile outreach service, tea club for patients living with dementia, and the trust’s major incident plan, which was said to be “robust and well-tested”.

The trust was rated as ‘requires improvement’ at a previous inspection in 2015, however inspectors found improvements had been made in a number of areas.

It was also praised for the way its staff

cared for those caught up in last year’s terrorist attacks and the Grenfell Tower fire.

Professor Ted Baker, England’s Chief Inspector of Hospitals, said: “King’s College Hospital NHS Trust was highly praised for the way its staff cared for people caught up in the terrorist attacks that took place in London last year. Staff there also cared for some of those injured at the Grenfell Tower fire.

“The demands on the trust are high and by and large it copes satisfactorily and is

moving in the right direction – though it needs to do more. It is disappointing that the trust is still requires improvement overall.

“While the trust has made some improvements, it needs to increase the pace of improvement and should use our report to drive the further improvement needed.”

In a statement, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said: “We are committed to providing high quality and effective patient care and note that the

Announcing his resignation, Lord Kerslake, who was chair for just two years, called for a “fundamental rethink” to the way the NHS is funded and organised.

Charter launches appeal to help buy eco bulbs

A DULWICH school is hoping to slash its £110,000 electricity bill by swapping traditional lightbulbs for LEDs.

The Charter School currently spends a mammoth £200,000 a year on its energy bill, including more than £110,000 on electricity – most of which is used for lighting.

At a time when schools are having their budgets squeezed, Charter is exploring every avenue to cut costs – and swapping the lightbulbs is seen as a “win-win” situation for both saving money and helping the environment.

In a bid to save vital funds, The Friends of The Charter School parents’ group has set up a fundraising campaign initially to raise £5,000 to switch to LEDs and save £2,000 a year.

The move is also expected to help the environment by saving about nine tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.

Emma Jones, a member of the parents’ group committee, who also works as an energy efficiency consultant, told the News: “The school would much rather be spending its money on teachers and provision for the pupils than electricity.

“They said they wanted to invest in some LED lightbulbs, because they were aware their electricity bill was very high, but it was just as they got hit by budget cuts so there really wasn’t any money in the pot to do it.

“It’s almost £200,000 spent on gas and electricity a year so that’s about £200 per pupil and that’s partly because it’s a fairly old building so this just seems like a win-win way of supporting the school.”

“This is a very cost-effective thing to do,” she added. “Every £10 donated to this campaign will save the school £4 a year for fifteen years (the average lifetime of an LED bulb) or £60 in total.

“And every £37 donated will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by one tonne.”

Walworth pupil Christilina Robinson, twelve, is a semi-finalist in this year’s beauty pageant – and she needs your vote to be in with a chance of winning.

The Year 7 student will find out if she has made it through to the finals in March and, if successful, will then battle it out for the title at the

pageant’s grand finale in Blackpool in October.

Christilina’s mother, Athena Robinson, 38, said her daughter was in a beauty pageant in the Cayman Islands when she was just nine months old – but this will be her first one in the UK. “She watched The Greatest Showman and the woman who stars in it [Michelle Williams] is one of her role models and she wants to be an actor and a model/gymnast and to go to the Olympics,” the Lambeth College teaching assistant added.

Charity walk now has shorter routes

SOUTHWARK: Dimbleby Cancer Care’s annual 50km charity walk has grown to include two shorter options this year.

The Walk50 challenge was set up to raise money for the charity, which offers care and support to cancer patients in memory of broadcaster Richard Dimbleby.

This year, the event has grown to include three options: a 12km family walk, 25km mid-distance walk, and the full 50km walk. Walk50 takes place on Friday, June 15.

Art project to remember those who died in 1917

MINIATURE HOUSES will soon be dotted around Burgess Park in memory of those who died during a WWI Zeppelin bombing raid.

The ten houses, designed by artist Sally Hogarth, will represent each of the lives cut short after a bomb landed in Calmington Road – where the park now sits – on October 19, 1917.

They come as part of a Friends of Burgess Park project commemorating 100 years since the Zeppelin attack.

A further 24 people were injured in the raid, and a fish and chip shop, doctor’s surgery and homes were destroyed.

Speaking to the News, Sally said the artwork was “more about the domestic face of war”.

“When you walk through the park, you’ve just got no sense of the houses and the lives that were there,” said the 31-year-old.

“When I started doing the research and revisiting the site, that was something that was really sticking with me.

“The Friends managed to get the names and ages of everyone who died in the bombing.

creating ten houses – one for each life lost and there are small, medium and large houses to represent man, woman and child.”

Hogarth explained the houses will vary in colour depending on how close they are to the spot where the bomb hit.

“You may feel that your efforts go unnoticed but my message is ‘please don’t give up’.

“The process and the journey to where we want to get, including the mistakes we make, can teach us a lot.”

He added: “I couldn’t have managed a project of this size without what I’ve learnt at the college.”

AN IT student at Lewisham Southwark College has set up his own mentoring company to help young people in their careers after being inspired by his own mentor.

Architects use designers’ work as inspiration

DESIGNS FOR a block on the new Aylesbury Estate redevelopment were inspired by a Vivienne Westwood tartan suit, documents reveal.

The papers, uploaded by Southwark Council and created by architects Hawkins\Brown, showed designs for ‘Block 4’ of the new plot.

Illustrations include a figure of a man wearing a Vivienne Westwood tartan design from 2013, for a bit of context.

The proposed buildings will straddle the corner of Portland Street and Albany Road, overlooking Burgess Park.

The designs include a tower block with four separate L-shaped mansion blocks around a courtyard garden.

The tower’s ‘saw-toothed’ brick pattern is described as ‘like a stretched-tartan grid’.

Next to their drawings, the architects explain: “Hawkins\Brown has tried to balance a clear, legible and rational architectural approach with elements of wit and romance.

“Our intention is that residents will

instinctively feel a sense of homeliness and affection for the building they will call home.”

The illustrations include concrete balconies and ornate touches like ‘gold anodised aluminium’ and a ‘gold-coloured fascia to catch the light’.

Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood found fame as a key figure on the punk scene on the King’s Road in the 1970s.

Born in Cheshire, she lived in an excouncil flat in Clapham for 30 years before moving into a house on

Councillor Maisie Anderson, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for public health and social regeneration, said: “I especially want to appeal to parents and carers to encourage their children to go fizz-free as sugar can have very serious, but very preventable, effects on the health

of young people.

“A healthy lifestyle is about more than just kicking your taste for fizzy, high-sugar drinks, but it’s a good place to start.”

Professor Damien Walmsley, the British Dental Association’s scientific adviser, said fizzy drinks were by far the biggest factor in causing dental erosion among teenagers.

“Consuming too many fizzy drinks is rotting our teeth, as well as piling on the pounds, but the ‘diet’ version is no less damaging to teeth,” he said.

“These are highly acidic and over time will wear away the surface of the teeth.”

Sarah Hickey, child obesity programme director at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity, said removing sugar drinks from the diet was a “good step in the right direction” to achieving and keeping a healthy weight.

Today marks the start of the first Fizz Free February campaign encouraging locals to give up the fizz entirely for 28 days.

The council says it has launched the campaign to raise awareness of the health implications of drinking fizzy drinks, which often contain high amounts of sugar.

Moped passenger gets seven years for sex assaults

A MOPED passenger who sexually assaulted two women in November was jailed for seven years last week as police appealed for help finding his accomplice driver.

Shahan Ali, 23, from Shurland Gardens on Peckham’s Willowbrook Estate, attacked his first victim on the morning of Saturday, November 11.

The nineteen-year-old woman was walking in Lewisham when a moped followed her and rode onto the pavement.

Police said she crossed the road multiple times to get away before Ali, the pillion passenger, jumped off the bike and pushed her against a wall.

He then sexually assaulted the woman and tried to steal her handbag. After managing to escape, she was assaulted for a second time.

Just days later, on Tuesday, November 14, the pair chased another nineteen-year-old woman, who was subjected to three separate assaults by Ali. In the final attack, he trapped her in a doorway where she had run for help, and assaulted her for more than ten minutes.

Police say Ali also made ‘an apparent calculated attempt to remove DNA evidence.’

Ali pleaded guilty at Woolwich Crown Court on December 19, to two counts of sexual assault.

On Friday he was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison and given a Sexual Harm

But the identity of the driver, whom police said remained on the moped throughout both attacks, remains unknown.

Detective Constable Henry Vernon said: "Shahan Ali and his accomplice targeted lone females and subjected them to protracted sexual assaults.

“Both men present a potential risk to the public, and although Ali is now imprisoned, I implore anyone with information regarding the driver of the moped to come forward."

The driver is described as wearing a black helmet, balaclava, and black clothing. The moped was black and silver. Anyone with information should call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

PECKHAM RYE Park will host a new music bash this summer after Southwark Council announced it had granted permission for GALA Festival to move to Peckham.

Organisers We Are The Fair Limited were given a premises licence on Tuesday permitting them to hold the event and sell alcohol in May, despite concerns from residents including the group Friends of Peckham Rye Park.

The News reported last week that the Friends of Peckham Rye Park were concerned that holding a festival in the park could ‘set a precedent’ and cause damage to the park.

For the last two years the sell-out event has been held in Brockwell Park, but this week the council gave the go ahead to relocate to the site by Peckham Rye and East Dulwich Road.

executive, Nick Morgan, said: “We are delighted to be granted a premises licence, however it is essential that we work with local residents and businesses to ensure its success not just this year but in future years.

“We want to support the local economy and work with it rather than against. We

take our business very seriously and as such don’t take moving a festival site lightly.”

This year’s adults-only day will be held on Sunday, May 27, during the Bank Holiday weekend, with a special day for families held on the Monday.

A council spokesperson said it had given

permission for the festival to go ahead with a maximum of 8,000 tickets, as long as noise levels do not go above 75 decibels.

Restrictions will be placed on where rubbish bins are kept and emptied to keep disruption to a minimum.

A plan laying out how people will get safely to and from the venue must be drawn up by the organisers and agreed by the council six weeks beforehand.

The council also confirmed the number of children per adult allowed at the familyfriendly day will be limited to three, and accompanying adults must be 21 years and older.

Councillor Johnson Situ, Cabinet Member for Business, Culture and Social Regeneration, said: “Southwark is proud of its history of hosting community events and is happy to be welcoming the Gala Festival to this summer’s programme.

“This festival promises to be an excellent event, creating trading, volunteering and employment opportunities, which is great news for local people and businesses.

“With our environmental protection team managing noise and our ecology officer and parks team protecting the park, plants and wildlife, we have everything in place to ensure a wonderful weekend.”

Its organisers promise a line-up of disco, house and party music fuelled by some of

south London’s best independent food and drinks traders.

Horse Meat Disco, which runs the Saturday night party at The Eagle in Vauxhall, will host its own stage, as will Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section, a regular fixture on Peckham’s music scene.

Horse Meat Disco DJ Jim Stanton said: “We’ve invited some very special guests along for the ride and it’s shaping up to be one of the highlights of the summer.”

The festival will also include a ‘banquet’ area with Peckham’s award-winning BBQ chefs Slow Ritchie’s, Maltby Street Market’s The Cheese Truck, and Neapolitan Pizza-makers Fundi.

Peckham’s Brick Brewery will also be on hand selling craft beer and vinyl traders Rye Wax and YAM Records are holding an independent record fair.

Mr Morgan said: “Gala is an independent music, food and drink festival with a proud south London heritage.

“The festival organisers want Gala to showcase the best of everything south London has to offer, they all live locally and were keen to ensure that Gala’s new home remained south of the river. “ GALA Festival starts at 11.30am and ends at 22.30pm on Sunday, May 27.

The full line-up will be announced at the end of February.

KING’S COLLEGE Hospital doctors have been told they can stop providing life-support treatment to a brain-damaged baby against his parents’ wishes.

Specialists at King's said giving further intensive care treatment to eleven-month-old Isaiah Haastrup was "futile, burdensome and not in his best interests".

They had asked a judge to give them the go-ahead to provide only palliative care.

As first reported in the News last year, Isaiah's mother, Takesha Thomas, and father Lanre Haastrup, both 36 and from Peckham, wanted treatment to continue. Their battle with King’s has since gained national attention, in an echo of the tragic Charlie Gard case.

But on Monday Mr Justice MacDonald ruled that doctors could stop providing life-support treatment. The judge, who had analysed evidence at a trial in the Family Division of the High Court in London earlier this month, said he had reached his decision with "profound sadness".

Mr Haastrup said he and Ms Thomas were disappointed and would discuss the judge's ruling with lawyers.

Barrister Fiona Paterson, who represented King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust at hearings, had told Mr Justice MacDonald how Isaiah was born at King's College Hospital on February 18, 2017 and was severely disabled.

She said nobody could understand the pain and suffering Isaiah's parents had endured.

But she said overwhelming medical evidence showed that stopping treatment was in Isaiah's best interests.

Doctors told the judge that Isaiah suffered "catastrophic" brain damage due to being deprived of oxygen at birth. They said Isaiah was in a low level of consciousness, could not move or breathe independently, and was connected to a ventilator. Doctors said Isaiah did not respond to stimulation.

Mr Justice MacDonald said, in a written ruling, that he had examined Isaiah's best interests from a broad perspective.

"I am satisfied that it is not in his best interests for life-sustaining medical treatment to be continued," said the judge.

"The court cannot imagine the emotional pain that the conclusion of the court will cause to the parents.

"It is my hope that, in due course, the parents will be able to derive

some small measure of comfort from the knowledge that they have done all they can for their muchloved and cherished son."

Mr Haastrup said: "We will be speaking to the lawyers to see what they say. Of course, one is disappointed."

A spokesperson for King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said: “This has been an extremely difficult time for Isaiah’s parents and all those involved in his care.

“The court’s decision to transfer Isaiah to palliative care is in his best interests and based on overwhelming expert evidence.

“Our priority now is to provide Isaiah with the medical care he needs, working closely with and supporting his parents.”

Year wait on repair

THE LETTER on repairs of Southwark Council from David Johnson, Bermondsey, made me laugh.

Everything he said is what happens to me every time I ring for a repair.

Last year January 2017 I rang to say my central heating radiator in my kitchen was leaking from a pipe. I was told they would get back to me as it is not an emergency. I am still waiting one year later.

I WAS shocked and sickened to read in your paper the horrific account of youths terrorising the Canada Estate, ‘People are living in fear’, Southwark News, January 18, 2018.

Migrants are part of the housing solution

LAST WEEK’S Southwark News carried a letter by a Bermondsey man whose two grown up children were still living at home.

Southwark Council had told them they had virtually no chance of getting a council home. Unfortunately this is true for many thousands of local people desperate for a safe, secure and really affordable home.

He asks why MP Neil Coyle supports immigrants coming to this country and implies that if there were fewer immigrants there would be more council homes.

This is the opposite of the truth. The Oxford migration observatory found in 2015 that 74% of recent migrants were in the private rented sector compared to just 14% of the UK born population.

Only 9% of social housing goes to people born abroad.

In fact our communities have been built and strengthened by migrants, by the contribution they make to our culture, the NHS, schools and economy, and of course our council estates.

It is ironic that last week’s letter came at a time when the community is fighting together to stop Southwark Council from agreeing to a development in the Elephant and Castle that would consist of 979 flats with only 33 of these being at “social rent”. Our community includes many Latin American traders in the Elephant and Castle shopping centre and other BAME people. We are all fighting together for housing that local people can afford.

The real blame for the housing crisis lies with successive governments since the 1980s; Labour, Tory and Lib Dem, who presided over the sale of 2.5

Residents have my total sympathy and support.

Risk of tower block fire post Lakanal is terrifying.

What is bitterly disappointing is that the estate received nearly seven thousand pounds in grant money to tackle anti-social youth issues.

What chance do any of us have, especially during these times of austerity, when such huge sums of money are poured into a scheme that has little or no effect.

I back the Regina Point residents.

Heads should roll, not just the offenders but the people wasting money on programmes that have little or no effect on stamping down on such horrific, bullying youth behaviour.

More homes equals less child poverty

IT’S SAD and frustrating to hear that around a third of children in our capital are growing up in poverty.

These statistics, published by the End Child Poverty Coalition, are yet another damming indictment of the Government’s punitive agenda of cuts to welfare and its failure to address the cost of living crisis.

Worryingly, in Lambeth and Southwark, figures show that around 35% of children are growing up beneath the breadline. It is a disgrace that families in our community are unable to afford the basic provisions to feed or clothe their children.

The Government say that work is the best way route of poverty, yet in London, 58% of those in poverty are from working families.

I support calls from the End Child Poverty Coalition for the Government to end its policy of freezing children’s benefits until 2020 to alleviate the burgeoning costs of living in London.

With ever-increasing rents further stretching the budgets of families living in private rented accommodation, one of the clear solutions to helping children out of poverty is to build more council housing. We need the government to start acting now to eradicate inequalities leading to child poverty.

The delivery of genuine council homes at social rent would be a good place to start.

I’M CERTAIN your readers will be interested to know about an appalling ongoing issue with the local post service myself and neighbours are having to put up with.

A few weeks before Christmas I spotted our local postman abandoning his post bag whilst out delivering on Dock Hill Avenue and Timber Pond Road in Rotherhithe, Southwark.

I immediately sent a complaint to Royal Mail including photos I had taken showing the post bag, full of mail and parcels, left on the street, whilst the postman was completely out of sight and anyone walking by could have pinched the bag unnoticed.

I said to Royal Mail I was astonished and alarmed at this behaviour. The post bag was no doubt full of Christmas presents and cards, with post containing confidential information about people completely exposed and at risk. I asked Royal Mail to look into this urgently and to get back guaranteeing the problem would never happen again.

Not until a month later in the new year did I receive a response from the Royal Mail just saying they would

look into this with the local sorting office. No reassurance was given that this would be taken in hand and stopped at once.

As I feel rightly that this is a serious issue not being dealt with properly by Royal Mail I have now had to take this up with my local MP, Neil Coyle, who is chasing this up on my behalf.

No doubt other residents in Southwark suffer from the poor standard of service from the Royal Mail and this is a good example of the difficulties we face.

Royal Mail should not be allowed to get away with such shoddy behaviour and no doubt other people in Southwark will agree!

Rates hardship fund not passed on

NEW RESEARCH from Gerald Eve indicating that over 40% of the £175 million allocated to councils for the year ending March 2018 from the Chancellor’s £300 million business rates hardship fund is yet to be passed on to local firms.

It’s hard to believe that small firms hit by last year’s bruising business rates revaluation are still waiting on what, at the time, was dubbed ‘emergency’ support more than 300 days and 10 months after it was launched.

The news that five high profile London councils (Hammersmith & Fulham, Lewisham Westminster, Lambeth, Kensington & Chelsea) still have more than £1 million to give away, when the scheme was announced over ten months ago, is extremely disappointing.

Our research showed that nearly one in three firms in the capital do not expect to be in the same location in five years’ time. With the business rates revaluation from last April impinging on the bottom line, now is the time when local authorities must step up to support their small businesses before they are gone forever.

HE WEATHER in January frequently switched between low temperatures and mild, overcast conditions – interspersed with torrential rain.

February can be a cold month but if it starts wet and windy – freezing weather may not return!

It is hard to be enthusiastic about finishing routine seasonal tasks in the garden when conditions are cold and damp. The ground is water logged, no digging or planting is possible; clear any remaining leaves which have been left to accumulate; remove last year’s dead foliage from perennials if not already done - before the garden wakes from its winter sleep.

Snowdrops have made an appearance their fragile white blooms shivering in the cold air. There are also colourful Crocuses and miniature daffodils emerging. Another hint that spring is not too far away - daylight hours are increasing very gradually.

A round up of flowering shrubs to be seen in the garden and open spaces include – Jasmine, Mahonia, Winter sweet, and Witch hazel (Hamamelis viginiana - pictured) - the latter is my favourite seasonal shrub/small tree. It has an almost super natural presence – slow growing and a compact habit; with strange shaped flowers (often described as spidery) appearing on bare branches in late January. Flowers come in shades of yellow, orangey-reds and purple; they have a gorgeous scent, different varieties produce either sweet, spicy aromas with hints of vanilla and fruit! In autumn, leaf colour can be stunning with shades of red and golden brown; and in spring the foliage is a soft pale green. With careful attention, Witch hazels will grow in containers for about five years; after which they prefer to be in open ground.

Witch hazel also has healing properties and is a traditional medicine. The distilled water (commercially available) is made from the bark, stems and leaves – used externally to reduce swelling and bruising. It is cooling, antiinflammatory and astringent; and this is why it’s often found in preparations for greasy skin/acne. (Always follow directions for use and seek professional advice concerning medical conditions).

These plants should still be available, ready for planting when conditions allow - two stunning varieties are Hamamelis mollis Pallida; with golden yellow flowers and Witch hazel ‘Jelena’ (Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Jelena’) producing large scented bright orange flowers. The wild animals which once called Walworth home SOUTHWARK’S HISTORY is diverse and plentiful, but every now and then a story comes along that still astonishes.

Walworth’s zoo - full of wild beasts from far and wide - is one such story.

In 1831-1832, Surrey Gardens was born. Also known as Pasley Park, the zoo contained many wild and exotic animals including snakes, rhino, elephants, leopards, gorilla, and the first giraffes ever in the UK. The Zoological Gardens were situated on the east side of Kennington Park. The grounds were comprised of around fifteen acres, which were used to the fullest extent. There was also more than three acres of water within the zoo.

There was a large conservatory containing around 6,000 feet of glass, and at that time was the largest building of its kind in England. The entertainment was much talked about, with a display of fireworks every night for two years.

Established by Edward Cross, the forgotten zoo had a 12,000 capacity music hall. There was a large orchestra and there were many open air concerts on a gigantic scale. The grounds were beautifully laid out by Henry Phillips, the author of Sylva Florifera, and at its peak, the gardens brought up to 8,000 visitors a day. Tom Thumb once performed there, and Queen Victoria and the Royal children were frequent visitors.

The walks and avenues within the park were planted with many different kinds of exotic forest trees.

The three acres of water had islands, shrubberies and plantations of great richness, which were specially selected to withstand the climate.

The gardens had many rusticlooking buildings around the grounds and were much appraised in comparison to Regents Park.

The editor of the Gardeners magazine spoke about the building when it opened: "The London Zoological Society has certainly the merit of taking the lead in this description of garden; but Mr. Cross has not only proceeded more rapidly than they have done, but has erected more suitable and more imposing structures than are yet to be found in the gardens in Regent Park."

On Sundays, the Surrey Music hall was rented temporarily by the famous Mr. Spurgeon for church services. On the first night of his service, on October 19th 1856, seven people were killed by accident, due to reckless jesters raising a false fire alarm.

"Fire! The galleries are giving away, the place is falling!" they shouted.

Bursting with over 12,000 people fleeing the scene, a number of

The scheme came about after the ‘News’ approached English Heritage to get more of our history recognised, only to be told that most of our buildings would not qualify as they were destroyed in the blitz and post war era.

After this event, Spurgeon’s church surprisingly continued to grow, and then in 1861 the congregation moved to the Metropolitan Tabernacle, where Spurgeon

successfully preached for 30 years.

However, he never forgot the lost lives at his dramatic first service in Surrey Gardens.

Today, there is very little left of this extraordinary history. In 1855 the animals were sold off, the grand music hall was destroyed by fire in

1862 and the whole park finally closed in 1877.

It's amazing that once upon a time, Southwark residents wouldn't have to travel for this level of entertainment - a fantastic extravaganza was once right in our back yard.

1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that it proposes to make the above orders under sections 6, 45, 46, 49 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 , as amended.

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable highway works to be carried out, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst the works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: (a) Coleman Road, between the junction of Newent Close and the junction of Dowlas Street. (b) Rainbow Street, at the junction of Coleman Road The alternative route would be via: (a) Dowlas Street, Rainbow Street and vice versa (b) Coleman Road, Wells Way, Southampton Way, Rainbow Street

Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that on 1 February 2018 it has made the above order under the powers of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

The effect of the orders, as part of a scheme of highway improvements in the vicinity of the ‘Two Fifty One’ development, would be, in:- (a) GAUNT STREET: (i) to reverse the existing one-way traffic working - so as to impose one-way north-westbound traffic working for all vehicles between its junctions with Newington Causeway and Southwark Bridge Road; (ii) to provide a new disabled persons parking place in a new lay-by on the south-west side outside the ‘Two Fifty One’ development, in which vehicles displaying a disabled persons ‘blue badge’ may be left without time limit at any time; (iii) to provide a new loading bay in a new lay-by on the south-west side outside the ‘Two Fifty One’ development, in which vehicles may load and unload for up to 40 minutes between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Monday to Saturday; (iv) to realign an existing pay parking place and solo motor cycle parking place on the north-east side outside Lancaster House, No. 70 Newington Causeway; and (v) to introduce ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions throughout the remaining kerbside; (b) NEWINGTON CAUSEWAY: (i) to provide a new loading bay in a new lay-by on the north-west side outside the ‘Two Fifty One’ development, in which vehicles may load and unload for up to 20 minutes between the hours of Midnight and 7 a.m., 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. and Midnight throughout the week, provided that no vehicle may return to that loading bay within two hours; and (ii) to amend the existing northeastbound bus lane in Newington Causeway between its junctions with Southwark Bridge Road and Borough Road so as to permit vehicles to access the new loading bay referred to above; (c) SOUTHWARK BRIDGE ROAD: (i) to impose one-way northbound traffic working for all vehicles except pedal cycles between its junctions with Gaunt Street and Borough Road; (ii) to realign the existing southbound segregated cycle lane between its junctions with Gaunt Street and Keyworth Street and the existing south-eastbound segregated cycle lane between its junctions with Keyworth Street and Newington Causeway so as to reflect a new highway layout; (iii) to prohibit all north-westbound vehicles except pedal cycles proceeding in that part of Southwark Bridge Road which lies between its junctions with Newington Causeway and Keyworth Street from turning right into that part of Southwark Bridge Road which lies between its junctions with Keyworth Street and Gaunt Street; (iv) to remove two existing pay parking places on the west side between its junctions with Gaunt Street and Borough Road so as to accommodate the provision of new bus stand clearways referred to in item 4(b) below; and (v) to introduce ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions on all kerbside between the western extent of TfL ‘red route’ controls at its junction with Newington Causeway and its junction with Borough Road; and (d) KEYWORTH STREET at its junction with ONTARIO STREET, to upgrade existing ‘single yellow line’ waiting restrictions to ‘at any time’ on all arms of the junction.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES FURTHER NOTICE under sections 90A to 90I of the Highways Act 1980 and in accordance with the provisions of the Highways (Road Humps) Regulations 1999 and the Highways (Traffic Calming) Regulations 1999, that it proposes to construct:- (a) speed tables of flat-top construction having a maximum height of 100 millimetres and covering the entire width of the carriageway, in:- (i) GAUNT STREET, at its junction with Newington Causeway, extending from the north-western kerb-line of Newington Causeway north-westward for a distance of 11 metres, measured on the south-west side of Gaunt Street; (ii) SOUTHWARK BRIDGE ROAD, extending from the northwestern kerb-line of Newington Causeway north-westward to its junction with Keyworth Street and then northward to a point 8 metres south of the south-western kerb-line of Gaunt Street; and (iii) KEYWORTH STREET, extending from its junction with Southwark Bridge Road to a point 8.5 metres north-west of the north-western kerb-line of Ontario Street (measured on the south-west side of Keyworth Street) and extending into ONTARIO STREET: (A) north-eastward for a distance of 10 metres north-east of the north-eastern kerb-line of Keyworth Street (measured on the south-east side of Ontario Street), and (B) south-westward for a distance of 15 metres south-west of the south-western kerb-line of Keyworth Street (measured on the north-west side of Ontario Street); and (b) road humps of sinusoidal cross-section construction, 3.7 metres in length, having a maximum height of 100 millimetres and covering the greater width of the carriageway, centred upon the following locations:- (i) SOUTHWARK BRIDGE ROAD, at a point 46.5 metres south of the southern kerb-line of Borough Road; (ii) SOUTHWARK BRIDGE ROAD, at a point 55 metres north of the north-eastern kerb-line of Gaunt Street; and (iii) SOUTHWARK BRIDGE ROAD, at a point 25 metres north of the north-eastern kerb-line of Gaunt Street.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES FURTHER NOTICE that it has approved, in accordance with Part 6 of Schedule 7 to the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 the provision of bus stand clearways at the following locations:- (a) GAUNT STREET, the south-west side, from a point 11.5 metres south-east of the eastern kerb-line of the motor vehicle carriageway of Southwark Bridge Road south-eastward for a distance of 30 metres; and (b) SOUTHWARK BRIDGE ROAD, the west side, from a point 23.5 metres south of the southern kerb-line of Borough Road southward for a distance of 90 metres. All vehicles except buses providing a London local service would be prohibited from stopping on these bus stand clearways at any time. The existing bus stop and bus stand clearways located in Gaunt Street, and in Southwark Bridge Road between its junctions with Keyworth Street and Borough Road, would be removed.

Nicol wonder strike inspires Lionesses to extend unbeaten run

Midfield Leigh Nicol’s sensational opening goal, the first of her Lionesses career, a headed effort from defender Billie Brooks and an Ashlee Hincks free-kick handed Millwall a crucial three points in the fight for the Woman’s Super League 2 title.

After a slow start, the Lionesses hit their stride on 20 minutes when Nicol picked up the ball 30 yards out before firing a sublime effort into the top corner of the Durham net via the crossbar. A trademark Brooks header doubled the advantage early in the second half when she nodded in a Hincks free-kick.

Third-place Durham were not to be an easy turnover, though, and after a long trip from the north east they had something to show when Beth Hepple glided through the Lionesses defence to cut the advantage to one.

Captain Hincks then netted her sixth goal of the season as her free-kick was too hot to handle for Durham goalkeeper Helen Alderson with 68 minutes played.

The visitors made it a tense finale when substitute Jordan Atkinson netted with five minutes remaining.

The Lionesses held on though for a fifteenth league game without defeat and with three points achieved a new WSL record of points gained in Millwall history with only eight games played this season.

FISHER UNDER-7s lost twice against Phoenix Tigers.

The side battled in what was a very physical game to draw the first fixture 2-2. Two fantastic team moves were neatly finished off by Ethan Maxwell.

In the second game Docks started slowly and found themselves 4-0 down after a frantic five minutes.

They thought back with goals from Tyler Andrews and Maxwell, hit the bar twice, the post and forced some great saves from the Hamlet stopper as they lost 4-2.

DOCKLANDS UNDER-8s fell to their first defeat in five games at home to a strong Dulwich Hamlet side last weekend.

Like earlier this season they were two close games. Phoenix started quickly and went 1-0 up, Fisher equalised with a CJ Abraham goal just before half-time. The hosts played well in the second half but the ball just wouldn’t drop for them and they were made to pay two minutes from time as Phoenix grabbed the winner.

In the second game Fisher went 1-0 up through captain Henry Tyler who was playing against his cousin in the Phoenix side. The visitors equalised right on half-time before a real battle ensued after the break. Both goalkeepers ended up with bloody noses after brave blocks before Phoenix scored with a cross-comeshot to go 2-1 up. Coach Paul Harbert was pleased with the displays despite the results. Man of the match was Tommy Pavey (Inset left) after a tough-tackling hard-working display.

MILLWALL LIONESSES extended their league unbeaten run to fifteen games – over eleven months – last Sunday with a 3-2 victory over Durham at St Paul’s.

Stansfeld 3-2 SC Thamesmead

STANSFELD CONTINUED their good 2018 league form with this fine performance and result against local rivals SC Thamesmead last weekend.

Stansfeld started the game at full pace and nearly took the lead in the second minute, but Joe Bannan’s header was tipped over the bar by Thamesmead goalkeeper Charlie Martin.

But Stansfeld didn’t have to wait too long to go in front. In the seventh minute, a sweeping move ended with Michael McKenna sending a defence-splitting pass into the path of Ryan Hassan who slotted past the oncoming ‘keeper.

in the Stansfeld defence and Ismali Ismali swept the ball home from close range.

Thamesmead then took the lead in the 33rd minute, Josh Patrick pouncing on an error by the Stansfeld defence before beating Lewis Collier in the Stansfeld goal.

It was a frenetic first half and in the 37th minute Stansfeld were given a lifeline, when a rash challenge by the Thamesmead left-back on Hassan resulted in a penalty for the hosts. Michael McKenna took it, firing into the roof of the net.

Still the drama before the break wasn’t over, and in the dying minutes of the half Stansfeld got back in front, Casey Killilea heading home from a Frankie Beale corner.

Crockenhill 1-5 Fisher FC

FSIHER HAD five different scorers at Crockenhill last Saturday as they stayed within five points of Punjab United in second.

Fisher travelled to Wested Meadow to face the team propping up the league, Crockenhill’s confidence low after last week’s 12-1 defeat against Holmesdale. The Fisher faithful had been hopeful of a similar goal haul but the conditions and the state of the pitch didn’t help.

Fisher boss Dean Harrison felt confident enough to leave regulars Ritchie Hamill and Trey Small on the bench. There was a debut for new signing Tim Moffat, who recently left his post as Lewisham boss, and Lee Friend returned up front.

Despite Fisher’s early dominance, Crockenhill created the first proper opportunity as Nic Taylor had to be alert to tip way a free-kick.

It took until midway through the first period for Fisher to make the breakthrough. It was Friend who darted into the box and after he was crowded out Jamie Brown squared to Rob Brown for a simple finish.

Mathieu Ramsamy thought he had made it two only for the offside flag to shoot up.

Fisher did go 2-0 up in the 32nd minute when Nathan Hunter headed in Jamie Brown’s corner for his first goal for the club.

Crockenhill got back into the game six minutes before the break through a Ryan Cullen header, before Harrison brought on Hamill for Rob Brown at the break.

The visitors restored their two-goal lead in the 57th minute, Harvey Brinkley finding Jamie Brown before Harry Draper dummied his pass and Friend fired in the third.

With ten minutes left, Hamill found space in the centre of the pitch and spread it wide to Jack Rogers who located Sam Pekun wide on the left.

His dangerous cross was headed behind for a corner and at the second attempt Jamie Brown floated in a cross that found the back of the net.

Fisher completed the rout in the 87th minute when Luke Haidarovic sidefooted home Hamill’s corner.

Fisher stay third, and face top-ofthe-table K Sports this Saturday.

Kick-off is 3pm. side’s lead but they were all denied by the Thamesmead stopper.

And in the last ten minutes, it was Thamesmead who were searching for an equalizer but Stansfeld’s rear-guard stood firm to ensure their team took all three points.

Stansfeld are eleventh in the Southern Counties East Football League First Division table.

IT DIDN’T take long for Jason Shackell to show he had the right stuff to play for Millwall – not that he would have chosen the circumstances in which to make his debut last weekend.

Shackell signed for Millwall on loan from Derby last week and is staying in a hotel until he organises for his wife and kids to join him.

And it was something he ate the night before the FA Cup clash against Rochdale that left him doubled over throwing up and set to miss the chance of a debut.

He was sent back to his hotel by Lions boss Neil Harris the morning of the game, before he insisted on playing.

Shackell, 34, was only supposed to feature for half an hour to build up match fitness on his first senior start for over four months, but ended up playing for an hour.

“I was desperate to get out there but I can give a lot more. It was nice to wear the Millwall shirt and I enjoyed it, to a degree. I’d like to have felt better and got a better result,” Shackell said.

“I’ve had limited game time so to get the opportunity to get some minutes on the pitch was really important for me. I really enjoyed working with the lads the first couple of days so wanted to get out there and play.

“I’d heard about a potential move here a couple of weeks ago a little bit. I spoke to the gaffer and was really excited about what he had to say. He seems like a great guy, straight down the line, that’s all you can ask for as a manager.

“Millwall have done really well this year and it’s a place I’m excited to come and play football and hopefully help where I can.

Tottenham defeated the Lions 6-0 in the quarter-finals last season, the lastever FA Cup game at White Hart Lane.

Millwall boss Neil Harris made nine changes for Saturday’s fixture against a side struggling in League One, but could be tempted to put out a stronger side next week with the potential for a big payday against the north London giants.

The Den would certainly sell out, and there would be the chance to add one of the biggest scalps in their history to those of then-Premier League champions Leicester City last season, after the wins over Bournemouth and Watford.

It looked like it would be straightforward last weekend after Jed Wallace slammed home from the spot following Donervon Daniels’ foul on Fred Onyedinma.

But the Lions were slack and Rochdale deservedly hit back through Ian Henderson and Matt Done to leave Harris’ side on the brink of defeat.

But Steve Morison was sprung from the bench with half an hour left to help turn the momentum of the game back Millwall’s way, and it was his cross in the last minute that gave Thompson the chance to finish first time at the near post.

Morison had come on for Jason Shackell, who almost didn’t feature after suffering food poisoning in the hours before the game.

“I was really pleased with his 60 minutes at the weekend, it was 60

take it and play well.

“I’ve come to play as much as I can and just be happy to be involved. I’ll keep pushing.

I played against Grimsby in September when I was just back from injury. I played a few under-23 games and got some match fitness after being out so long. It was nice to get back to a proper competitive fixture on Saturday.

“I wish the result had been different but we get to go again and we’re in the hat, that’s the main thing.”

Shackell is out of contract this summer, and will hope to get enough game time at Millwall to earn a deal.

“Derby knew I wanted to play football. It’s not really in my makeup to just sit there and be happy to tick along and take a pay cheque,” Shackell insisted.

“I always want to play football and compete, that’s where the adrenaline is, that’s what you want to get paid for doing. You want to be out there on a Saturday afternoon.

“To come somewhere and be involved in the match-day squad again, that’s what I wanted to do.

“My contract is up at the start of the summer and I still feel I’ve got a few years left in me. I want to play well, do well for myself and then reassess in the summer.

“There were bits and bobs [of interest from other clubs] but this seemed like a good fit for me, something I was excited about and after speaking to the manager I was really happy to come here.

“I’ve been around the game long enough to know what Millwall fans expect. I’m not afraid to go into a tackle, to put my body on the line. I want to show them and the rest of the lads that I belong in the group.

“We’ve got some really good players. I’m sure from inside the dressing they won’t feel they are exceeding expectations. They fully deserve to be in this league, but there is still a long way to go.

“A lot of hard yards need to be put in to ensure we stay in this division, but I fully believe we can and should do that.”

MILLWALL’S SIX-match winning streak at home in the FA Cup came to an end – but not before Ben Thompson continued his own ministreak in the competition.

Thompson struck in added-time to give the Lions a replay they didn’t want, but at least they avoided a poor defeat against a side a division below them but who dominated for long spells on Saturday.

It will be interesting to see now what team Neil Harris will send out in the replay on Tuesday, February 6, with the

minutes we didn’t think he was going to get,” Harris said.

“At eight o’clock in the morning he was ruled out and he went back to bed for two hours. Then he said he wanted to give it a go.

“We were hoping to get 30 minutes out of him, start him and bring him off. We got him to 60 and he looked white as a sheet when he came off. But he’ll be better for that 60 minutes.”

MILLWALL NEW boy Harry Toffolo was barely in the door at the club on Monday when he was confidently stating his ambitions – to make the number three shirt his own.

Toffolo has until May to achieve that objective, and to earn a longterm Lions deal.

Left-back Toffolo has everything to play for after being told by Norwich boss Daniel Farke that he could leave the club, before he linked up with Millwall until the end of the season.

But he will have to dislodge James Meredith, who has started every league game this season.

And he is determined to work hard to give himself the best chance to do that.

“I’m here to push the starting player and to take his shirt,” Toffolo exclusively told Southwark News in his first newspaper interview after joining Neil Harris’ squad. “I want that shirt. James has been in the situation where he’s played with other full-backs. He’s had a fantastic career and played a lot of games.

“I have to work very hard but I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t fancy my chances. I have to push my teammates and that’s only going to make the team better.

“I’m dedicating my whole life to this.

“I’m looking at it day by day, I want to work hard and can’t really look too far ahead. My contract was up at the end of the season so, yes, I’ve got to find a club.

“But I’ve got to do it in the manner that’s professional. The only way you can earn something is by working hard, and that’s what my plan is. I’ll dedicate my life to Millwall for these months and work my socks off.

“The gaffer here spoke to me and I was very impressed with him on the phone. My agent is Scott Barron, the ex-Millwall player, and he is full of superlatives for the club, and the club enjoyed him when he was here. He played a similar position to me.

“I’m here to work hard, that’s the main thing. You have to work hard and that’s me down to a tee, that’s what I like to do. I’m a grafter, I want to graft and not take the easy option.

“I’m really looking forward to it.

It’s a club with a philosophy and mentality that really suits me as a player.

New defender determined to take his chance and secure a long-term deal with Millwall

“I’ll dedicate my life to Millwall for these months and work my socks off.“ Doncaster Rovers in League One, and he admitted that if he hadn’t broken two toes in December and had to go back to Norwich to recover he would have been interested in extending that arrangement.

He played seventeen times for Doncaster, alongside ex-Lions striker John Marquis, whom he spoke to about Millwall.

“I got on really well with John,” Toffolo said. “He knows Scott and obviously he knows the manager here. It was brilliant to get his insight. Travelling to games on the bus I used to get that insight. He said it was the same mentality everyone says about Millwall.

“In my mind at the time I thought,

‘I’d like to play for a club like that’.

Somewhere where every point, every tackle means something.

“I suffered my injury from putting my foot in and blocking a shot. I want to put my neck on the line for the team.

“I broke two toes in a tackle, it was quite painful but I’ve returned fit. It took around the normal timescale but it was frustrating, it was a niggly problem but it’s gone now.

“I’d like to have stayed, Darren Ferguson is a fantastic manager and the boys there are brilliant. They were starting to get a good run together before injuries.

“But I’m glad I was able to come back fit and then get this

opportunity. Now I’m here and I was delighted to get it done.”

Toffolo is a former club-mate of Steve Morison – scrubbing the striker’s boots when they were at Norwich together – and he also knows Jake Cooper.

He was taking the move in his stride on Monday, showing no signs of nerves as he waited for the paperwork on the switch to be completed before he took part in his first training session.

“I’m used to moving. I moved schools when I was younger, I’ve moved clubs a lot and I like meeting new people,” he said.

“I like to be a character off the pitch and on the pitch.

“I know Steve Morison from the Norwich days. I was in the youth team cleaning boots. He said about my haircut when I met him Monday, I used to have it long and all over the place!

“I know Jake Cooper as well. It’s a really strong team. You’ve got to be tough to play at Millwall and me being here is a compliment to me, that the manager sees me as a Millwall type of player.

“I hold that in the utmost respect and I’m going to take advantage of the opportunity I have.

“I’m not surprised at all how well they’ve done. I was in the Scunthorpe squad for the play-offs last year and it was a team that was too good for us and they deserved to go up.

“The quality they’ve got in that dressing room that I’ve seen already is phenomenal. They deserve to be where they are and even to push on further.

“They’ve got the right manager and staff and I’m looking forward to working with them, seeing what the training sessions are like.

“It’s a club that’s got a lot of potential and great backing from the fans. It’s a club that is going in the right direction.”

Lions fan and Millwall writer Jay Taylor reflects on icon’s return – and picks five highlights from Cahill’s first stint with the club from 1998-2004

I

WASN’T even born when Barry Kitchener graced the pitch at the old Den, and like many a Millwall fan I was a little too young to be able to fully appreciate the likes of Terry Hurlock and Teddy Sheringham in their pomp as the Lions competed in the top flight.

Like others, my heroes emerged further down the line, growing up watching the likes of Paul Ifill, Steven Reid, Neil Harris, Stuart Nethercott, amongst others, before a certain Australian came along.

Everyone knows the story of how Tim Cahill made his way to Millwall for a week’s trial prior to being snapped up by the club at the age of seventeen. He had shown bravery to risk it all by leaving Australia on his own so young, but that kind of bravery was one of his most recognisable traits when you saw him play.

Cahill made his Lions debut aged eighteen in the final game of the 1997-98 season, a 2-1 defeat at home to Bournemouth in the old Division Two. And after that first glimpse of a young, hungry determined midfielder back in 1998, there were many highlights during his six-year spell with the club.

We take a look back at five of the them during the Aussie’s first stint in SE 16.

1. Cahill’s first Millwall goal

2 Winning the Division Two championship in 2000-01.

The Lions had the same core that lost the play-off semi-final to Wigan in 2000.

Cahill would be instrumental as they bounced back from post-season heartache to win promotion the following season.

He scored ten times in 48 appearances in all competitions as Mark McGhee’s side finished league champions.

Cahill started that season by scoring both goals in a 2-0 win against Reading, and scored a second-half equaliser for Millwall in the final away game of the season at Wrexham for the alreadypromoted Lions.

3 Record win against West Ham

It was West Ham’s first visit to Millwall’s new ground, and a first meeting in twelve years. The stage was set. A sold-out Den on a fresh Sunday, dubbed the Mothers’ Day massacre by cheeky Lions fans who saw their side win 4-1, the largest winning margin between the sides in the Football League.

But the game belonged to Cahill who scored the second with a brilliant header and the third with a sublime volley from

inside the area.

Cahill looked on course for a first-ever Millwall hat-trick when the Lions won a second penalty. He sat on the ball prior to the spot-kick, but then blasted over. But it was still the Tim Cahill show.

4 FA Cup semi-final: Sunderland 0-1 Millwall

This result is synonymous with one man – and after scoring in the quarter-final replay away to Tranmere, Cahill was at it again at Old Trafford as he scored the winner to secure a first-ever FA Cup final appearance for Millwall in 2004.

Arguably the most famous goal in the Lions’ history, Cahill’s fired past two defenders and Mart Poom in goal.

And then one of the great images in club history, Cahill twirling his shirt over his head as he ran the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of Lions fans. It confirmed him as a cult hero.

5 His (first) Lions swansong

apprenticeship at Millwall before going to Everton and helping them to qualify for the Champions League.

There was (almost) no better way to lower the curtain on his Millwall career than making his last appearance in an FA Cup final against Manchester United in 2004.

The Lions lost 3-0 but to be part of the most sacred occasion in English football was the perfect swansong for Cahill. He ended the season with twelve goals in 49 appearances in what was thought to be his final campaign for Millwall...until now.

Partnering Neil Harris up front that afternoon, the Lions went 1-0 down but Harris scored on 49 minutes before the nineteen-year-old Cahill grabbed the winner to give his side all three points.

battle to point against the Rams

THE MOMENT Millwall fans had been waiting weeks for since news of his potential return first surfaced arrived just after half seven on Tuesday evening.

Les Briley and Terry Hurlock were introduced first, and must have felt like supporting actors as they waited for the main star to appear.

At 7.33pm the video used for Tim Cahill’s unveiling on social media on Monday evening was played on the big screen – 4,500 retweets and 11,000 likes at last count. A montage of his best moments in a Millwall shirt between 1998 and 2004 and the hashtag, The Return, for maximum Twitter value.

Cahill had arrived at The Den at 5.20 pm and was surrounded by a clutch of fans who turned up early. He dutifully signed autographs and posed for photos before security ushered him towards reception.

There was an endearing moment in the dressing room before the game when Ben Thompson met the player he calls his “boyhood hero” and, while being playfully ribbed by his team-mates, embraced Cahill. Thompson was two years old when Cahill made his competitive Lions debut in May 1998.

At 7.35pm Cahill stepped onto the Den pitch to cheers from the home fans before he joined Briley and Hurlock for more photos.

It was fairly short and sweet. After all, the main event of the evening was Millwall’s Championship fixture against Derby County and three more vital points to play for.

sideshow, and after quickly acknowledging fans in the ground he last played at in 2006, in an FA Cup tie for Everton, he departed back down the tunnel.

He will be presented to the media for the first time today. Millwall’s media team have been inundated all week with requests from around the globe, including requests for up to 20 one-to-one interviews, with TV and radio stations from Australia and China to accommodate. Local journalists were contacted to go on Australian news outlets.

Lions boss Neil Harris will accompany Cahill to The Den today, before his former team-mate will fulfil broadcast and daily and Sunday print duties. Cahill is used to all this, but this is something new for Millwall, whose signings under Harris have generally been low-profile players, low-key unveilings, often just one journalist conducting the first interview with the new recruit.

His return has been quite sentimental and romantic, for fans, particularly, and those members of staff at all levels of the club who remember Cahill fondly.

Harris, though, does not sign players for sentimental reasons and he will expect Cahill to make an impact for this team. It will initially be off the bench, from where Harris has felt he hasn’t had the players to make an attacking difference this season.

He could have done with a firing Cahill on Tuesday night, when after Millwall had absorbed Derby pressure for much of the night, their opponents were there for the taking and giving up chances towards the end that the watching Cahill would have

relished.

Cahill would also have reflected that not much has changed at The Den since his first spell when Harris, Sean Dyche, Stuart Nethercott, Dave Livermore and Richard Sadlier, among others, not only knew how to look after themselves but also didn’t shy away from putting their head in where it hurts. It took a while to warm up but the last 20 minutes would have refreshed Cahill’s memory, if it was needed, of the atmosphere a fired-up Den can generate.

Lee Gregory will have the scar to show for his bravery, after he went for Jed Wallace’s cross in the first half only for Tom Huddlestone’s high studs to leave the striker requiring six stitches at half-time.

Harris felt it was a definite penalty and it was hard to disagree.

Then late in the game there was another moment of controversy when Shaun Hutchinson claimed his shot had hit a Derby hand in the box. That wasn’t to be either, but it was at the other end earlier in the game where Hutchinson had shown his true worth.

Hutchinson has the cut of a potential Lions legend in the making, a feeling based on the kind of intervention he made in the opening period. It seemed all Matej Vydra had to do was fire home into an unguarded net after Jordan Archer had palmed Andreas Weimann’s shot to him, but Hutchinson threw himself at Vydra’s shot to prevent a certain goal.

Hutchinson was wearing the captain’s armband in Steve Morison’s absence, and with Tony Craig leaving Millwall he will be elevated to vice-captain at the club. His every action on the pitch says he deserves it and he is a future club skipper.

Cahill will certainly have been impressed with this Millwall side’s resolve after they had to defend for long periods with Derby moving the ball around briskly and attacking with pace through the likes of Vydra and Tom Lawrence.

Yet apart from a couple of long-range efforts Archer wasn’t really troubled. He was relieved to see the offside flag raised after substitutes Cameron Jerome and Ikechi Anya combined before the latter found the back of the net.

Millwall could consider themselves lucky to get that decision, but neither Harris nor Rams boss Gary Rowett could complain about getting a point apiece.

After all the emotion, the hard graft begins for Cahill. He trained for the first time on Tuesday as he builds up his fitness after almost two months without a competitive game.

We don’t know if he can still do it at this level. We soon will.

CAHILL SIGNING ‘STIRS’ LIONS Millwall squad ‘buzzing’ with return of club icon

NEIL HARRIS has said Millwall can’t afford to “stand still” as he reflected on a successful January transfer window.

Millwall confirmed the high-profile signing of their former star Tim Cahill on Monday, following the captures of Jason Shackell and Harry Toffolo.

At the time of going to press Millwall were expected to announce the signing of Wolves winger Ben Marshall, who will join on loan until the end of the season and give the Lions options on both flanks.

Harris admitted they will have to be “patient” with Cahill, who hasn’t played competitively since December 2.

But he was pleased with Millwall’s business this month.

“Jason Shackell, Tim Cahill, Harry Toffolo and one more [Marshall] is going to give us a big lift,” he said after the 0-0 draw against Derby on Tuesday night.

“It’s important to have that strength in depth at this stage of the season.

“We can’t afford to stand still as a club.

We can’t do that because everyone else is moving forward.

“It’s been a whirlwind few days. The focus has been on trying to bring in quality players but also focus on [Tuesday’s]

TONY CRAIG was set to have his contract paid up by Millwall – ending his playing association with the club almost fifteen years after his debut.

Craig was in the line-up for the last time for the Lions in their 2-2 draw with Rochdale in the FA Cup fourth round last Saturday – his 300th start across four spells with the club. His last involvement in a match-day squad was in the 0-0 draw with Derby on Tuesday night.

“We’ll be patient with Timmy.

“He’ll bring great qualities to the dressing room as a man. He’s played all over the world. He has great experience and is great with the young lads. Even when he was young himself he was great in the dressing room.

“He’s here to pass on his experience, but first and foremost he is here to affect the team and help us get results.

“He wanted to come back and play for Millwall because of what it means to him, he wanted to come back and play for me.

He wants to lead and he’ll help our leaders do that.

“A player who is close to the club’s heart has come back to play for us. What he brings in terms of experience and a global name is important, it stirs the place up.

The boys are buzzing.

“He’s been at the club all day [Tuesday]. He was in the dressing room before the game, after the game and they will thrive off that.

“He’s a great character. I look at the characters I have in the dressing room, people like Steve Morison, what a brilliant leader. We’re trying to build something long-term and having these people share their experiences will make us a better group.”

Ben Marshall was having a medical on Wednesday morning before completing his loan move from Wolves.

Marshall, 26, will provide competition on the right and left of midfield, areas Neil Harris was seeking to reinforce this month.

Marshall is unlikely to have a future with the Championship leaders, and if he impresses with the Lions Harris could pursue a permanent deal in the summer.

Millwall beat off competition from three Championship clubs for his signature.

Tim Cahill, Jason Shackell and Harry Toffolo trained together for the first time on Tuesday as they build up to match fitness.

Of those three, Toffolo, 22, has most to play for in terms of trying to earn a longterm deal with the club.

“The gaffer here has known me for a long time, he’s watched me a lot,” Toffolo said. “I’ve always had Millwall in the back of my mind for the last three years, really. It’s always been near and about but nothing ever got done.

“Now to have the opportunity to come here, every time Millwall came up I was itching to get here. “I’ve got the chance now until the end of the season to go out there and show the manager day-in, dayout and hopefully earn myself a longer deal.

“I always wanted to go and play football. I’ve played over 80 games now and I think that’s good enough for me to come here and focus my whole life on these few months to try and earn myself something.”

Craig ends Millwall association transfer targets in the summer of 2015, joining from Brentford and immediately given the captain’s armband.

Injury limited him to 24 appearance in 2015-16, the season ending in disappointment when he made his first start in seven months in the 3-1 defeat to Barnsley in the League One play-off final.

Craig – who will be 33 in April – featured 57 times in all competitions the following season as Millwall reached the League One play-off final again, his fourth with the club.

The Lions defeated Bradford 1-0 with Craig lifting the trophy as skipper.

Craig found his chances limited this season after Harris signed James Meredith from the Bantams in the summer. Meredith, 29, has started every league game this term and Harry Toffolo joined on Monday.

Craig was expected to leave this month. He started twice in the League Cup and twice in the FA Cup, but had been linked with a move to Southend, who were interested in signing the defender before Phil Brown’s departure as manager.

At the time of going to press Craig was set to be a free agent.

He was expected to join Bristol Rovers, against whom he scored his only goal last season in a 4-3 win at the Memorial Stadium that sealed a play-off place.

Rovers are currently in tenth place in League One, eight points off the playoff places.

Craig was out of contract in the summer.
