THE MUTILATED body of a female cat has sparked fears the ‘Croydon Cat Killer’ has struck again in Southwark.

A young couple is said to have discovered the body of a black female cat in a Peckham garden with her head and tail missing at about 9am on Sunday, January 7.

The injuries were similar to those inflicted by the notorious ‘Croydon Cat Killer’, who is still yet to be caught.

Tony Jenkins and Boudicca Rising, who run South Norwood Animal Rescue Liberty

(SNARL), have been assisting police with the hunt for the serial animal killer – known as Operation Takahe.

Speaking to the News, Mr Jenkins said the cat was found in the SE15 2 area of Peckham but did not give exact details of the location.

‘Survival of the fittest commuter’

MP Harriet Harman is demanding action on the ‘terrible overcrowding’ at Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye, two stations in her constituency.

One of her team told the News that she has been receiving complaints about overcrowding since early 2015.

The News has aired the concerns of drivers on the boroughs packed roads on many occasions, but those same frustrations are faced regularly on the rail and Tube network. Photos taken by commuters show the scale of the problem.

One rail user even described it as “survival of the fittest commuter”.

MP Harriet has said it is ‘unacceptable’ that constituents had faced the problem for three years. Rail operator Govia Thameslink Railway has said it is ‘addressing the significant increase in passenger numbers’ at the stations, and that both Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye are priorities. But, they said, service will not improve until December 2019 when the frequency of Thameslink trains will double thanks to a new route. Does that mean commuters will have to endure these scenes for almost two more years?

What can be done in the meantime? The last thing people want to face on their way to and from work is huge crowds unable to even get into the stations. Often, when they finally do get on to the platforms, they have to wait to even get on a train; and when they do get on a train, they have to put up with their face in someone else’s armpit and a rucksack shoved into their side. So, as is well know, the commuter’s lot is not always a happy one. We hope Harriet can win some kind of improvements for them, before the planned 2019 changes.

Writer created fake eatery in garden and got it ranked as No 1 spot in capital

Oobah Butler decided to create a fake restaurant, complete with a website, a menu made up of dishes named after moods such as “empathetic”, and images of bleach, shaving foam, and even an egg resting on his own foot, dressed up to look like fancy food.

The 26-year-old, who has lived in Dulwich for the last three years, said the idea came from having written fake reviews for restaurants for £10 as his first paid writing job.

Speaking to the News, he said getting TripAdvisor to verify his non-existent eatery, The Shed at Dulwich, was straightforward.

All he needed was an address, £10 ‘burner’ phone and a website and he was ready to go.

Marketing it as an “exclusive appointment-only” restaurant, the journalist enlisted the help of friends and family who wrote dozens of reviews of the made up business.

consistent was the experience and what it was like so people wouldn’t get mixed up – and people to hammer on about how exclusive it was and how hard it was to get a table,” he said.

“One thing about London culture that isn’t that attractive is that exclusivity so I played up to that.”

As the reviews flooded in, The Shed at Dulwich climbed the ranks and by September it reached the top spot on TripAdvisor.

“Just seeing it going up the rankings was so funny and it only became a reality when I got the first phone call,” said Mr Butler, originally from the West Midlands.

“I remember it was early in the morning and I had a bit of a hangover and on the end of the phone was a real human trying to book my non-existent restaurant.”

“There was one point where it got out of hand,” he continued. “I had left the phone at my friend’s house and I had

over a hundred missed calls.

“It wasn’t just customers – there were people trying to apply for jobs, a production company wanted to come and feature it, and there was some company working with Bromley Council which got in contact with me. There was one day I was coming out of my house and there were three people looking lost in the road and they were like ‘excuse me, do you know where The Shed at Dulwich is?’

“They said ‘I’m just going to phone it again’ and I had the phone in my pocket and had to walk off up the road.”

Having reached the top spot on the review website, Mr Butler decided to open the restaurant for one night only.

After a trip to Iceland to stock his fridge full of ready meals, he opened his garden and shed to guests who dined al fresco beneath outdoor heaters.

Mr Butler, who admitted he had an “unquenchable thirst for nonsense”, said he wasn’t trying to prove anything with the prank, which he revealed in an article for Vice in December. “We are at a crossroads where people trust what they read online,” he said. “I think that’s brilliant – it’s funny because anything is possible then.

“That excites me and I think it should excite other people.”

A spokesperson for TripAdvisor said: “Generally, the only people who create fake restaurant listings are journalists in misguided attempts to test us.

“As there is no incentive for anyone in the real world to create a fake restaurant it is not a problem we experience with our regular community – therefore this ‘test’ is not a real world example.

“Most fraudsters are only interested in trying to manipulate the rankings of real businesses - so naturally that is what our content specialists are focused on catching.

“We use state-of-the-art technology to identify suspicious review patterns, based on modelling of what normal review behaviour looks like.”

Elderly ‘ate Christmas dinner in their coats’ as estate’s heating went down

ELDERLY RESIDENTS ate Christmas dinner in their coats after an estate was left without heating and hot water for almost a fortnight.

Trouble first began for residents at the Setchell Estate, in Bermondsey, when their heating and hot water went off just before Christmas Day. One woman told the News her mother and father, aged 74 and 77, ate Christmas dinner in their coats and were going to bed at 5pm just to keep warm.

“My mum has fought breast cancer and my dad has COPD – they are both quite poorly and this has made them worse,” said the woman, who did not wish to be named.

“They can’t have a shower or a bath and have to boil a kettle and take it upstairs to have a wash.

“They had to go out and buy an electric heater for £90 which they haven’t got to spend and I gave them a couple [of heaters]. They are so, so depressed over this.”

Charlie Withers, who has lived on the estate with his wife Susan for ten years, said he got in touch with MP Neil Coyle, who “tried to take up the baton”.

“He is the one who actually gave us numbers to get in touch with people for heaters,” said the 69-year-old.

“Whenever we phoned up the council and asked how things were going and how far they had got with it, all we got was that they had noted it and it was continuing.

“It was really cold; we are on the corner so we get the wind coming from both ends.

“Most of the people on Curtis Way are pensioners and old people putting those heaters on, our electric bills are going to rocket.”

Christiana Macarthy-Woods, 85, who lives on the estate with her husband Roger, 79, said the couple were still without hot water and heating on Tuesday, January 9, as the News went to press.

granddaughter said she was also left without heating or hot water for about 48 hours over the festive period.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle said the council needed to keep its list of vulnerable residents up to date, and also have a clear point of contact for localised issues.

“People were finding it difficult to get through to the council so contacted me,” he said.

“Not enough information is provided to people – even the people who contacted me said they knew I wasn’t responsible but asked if I could help.

“If you are an older person and you are on your own Christmas can be a

really tough time of year – but to throw in the loss of heating and hot water is more than unfortunate which is why the council has to improve that list but also act quicker to contact people so they can know when it’s coming back on.”

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “I do apologise to residents for the low heating over the past two weeks – this is due to a complicated underground leak, which was discovered underneath the foundations of the estate.

“We wrote to residents to ask if they required an emergency heater and have supplied them where required.

Mayor Smith also highlighted that although 2017 had brought tragic events, this also meant that those involved in putting things right had an

opportunity to be recognised. Speaking in particular of the London Bridge Attacks last June, he said: “There were people involved doing very brave things. Of course we don’t know yet, but I’m sure we’ll be really amazed by the type of people that are being put forward.”

He added: “It’s great to see the expression on people’s faces that they’ve been recognised and thanked.

And they become very proud local people and it pleases me that we can achieve that, and for them it’s a special day in their lives.”

“We managed to locate the source of the problem on Thursday [January 4] and have ordered specialist repair materials to resolve it permanently.

“As this is a bespoke repair, it will take a little longer and we have written to residents again to explain the situation.

“I can reassure residents that all vulnerable tenants have been directly contacted and their wellbeing is monitored.

“All tenants will receive a refund of their service charges for the period of the outage and leaseholders, who pay actual costs incurred, will see a lower fuel cost for the period.

“We will be offering a small good will gesture on top of this for the inconvenience.”

Nominations open for ‘wonderful’ civic awards

NOMINATIONS ARE open for this year’s Southwark Civic Awards, which have been described by the borough’s Mayor, Charlie Smith, as ‘a wonderful thing’.

Talking about the awards, which recognise ‘active citizenship’ and “exceptional achievement”, Charlie said: “I think it’s brilliant that people are recognised. We don’t thank people enough in this country, and there’s nothing like someone giving you a slap on the back and saying ‘well done’. I think it’s important that that is done and

that is said.”

The annual ceremony will take place at Southwark Cathedral on May 21, and will be presented by former mayors.

“[They have] killed before in Peckham; everyone needs to still be on their guard and vigilant.”

The Croydon Cat Killer name - also referred to as the Croydon Cat Ripper and M25 Cat Killer - was first used towards the end of 2015 after a spate of

microchipped and may have been a stray from the area.

“We’ve had some information that there were some stray cats in that vicinity that were being fed so there’s a possibility it might be a local stray,” said Mr Jenkins.

“Its head and tail were missing, which is a match to many other cases we’ve been out to, and the injuries were similar.

“The young couple who found it were getting ready to go on holiday and noticed something in the garden, went out and had a look and found the cat and rang it through to the police.

“The police attended and called us and we assisted police with the retrieval of the body.

“The cat looked quite elderly; it wasn’t in the best of conditions which might suggest the local information we have that it’s a stray cat.”

Mr Jenkins urged pet owners to keep their cats indoors, especially at night.

“Obviously a killer is still at large and is killing in a wide area, including Southwark,” he said.

The post-mortems carried out following the first spate of attacks in late 2015 - October onwards - found that the cats died from blunt force trauma, but the mutilations occurred after death with a 'sharp implement'.

Police say they are keeping an open mind and believe an individual, or group of individuals, are responsible for both the deaths and mutilations.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “The team for Operation Takahe are aware of the latest reports and will assess them to see if they are linked to the cases already established as part of the ongoing investigation led by police in Croydon.

“Anyone with information is asked to call the Met Police on 101 or the RSPCA on 0300 123 8018 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

‘Peckham’s biggest Elvis fan’ unveils his shrine to The King

A RETIRED metal worker dubbed “Peckham’s biggest Elvis fan” has revealed his huge collection of Elvis Presley memorabilia - and his plans to leave it all to his family.

Eddie Pardey, 78, said his Peckham home was “a shrine to Elvis”, after filling it with records, artwork and figurines of the singer.

Mr Pardey was diagnosed with bowel cancer in October last year, but decided not to undergo treatment for the disease. He plans to leave the collection to his family, “so that it can be preserved for the future”.

His flat houses hundreds of records, figurines and art work, including a metal replica of Presley’s motorbike turned into a telephone set. Since his diagnosis, showing the collection to the world has become an ambition, having only shown close friends and family until now. He said: “Only two or three people have seen it but I want people everywhere to see it.

There are still a lot of old rock and rollers about who’d be interested in this stuff.”

A neighbour, Margit Mulder, 48, said: “He’s absolutely obsessed with Elvis, definitely Peckham’s biggest Elvis fan.”

Mr Pardey began collecting Elvis records in the 1970s, but it was only when his wife, Jacqui Pardey, another big fan of The King, died 25 years ago that he decided to start a collection in earnest.

He then set about asking friends and family for help in buying artworks, and still asks his sister to help source Presley-themed items on Facebook.

He said of his flat: “It’s a shrine to Elvis, and to my wife who loved him too.”

He said he has always had a connection to Elvis, and that he loved that the star “could sing anything”. He recalled being hit especially hard when Presley died on August 16, 1977, Mr Pardey’s 38th birthday. “My wife came back and told me, it was awful. Get on board to celebrate HMS Belfast’s 80th anniversary

HMS BELFAST will celebrate its 80th anniversary this year with a number of events, including a reunion for former crew.

Visitors will be able to step on board the iconic vessel in mid-March and relive its historic navigation through the Arctic Convoys, D-Day, the Cold War and more.

On the weekend of March 17-18, which marks 80 years since the ship was first launched in 1938, members of the public will be free to stroll

through the ship’s nine decks and get a taste of what life on board of Belfast must have been like for its 950-strong company.

Ian Kikuchi, senior curator for Second World War at IWM said: “HMS Belfast is a rare survivor, a veteran warship and a unique witness to twentieth century conflict.

“During this anniversary weekend visitors can come on board and experience the ship’s life and adventures by walking the same decks, ducking through the same hatches and climbing up and down the same ladders as the crew who

served on board.

“With 80 years of stories to discover and nine decks to explore, there really is no museum quite like HMS Belfast.”

In the run up to the anniversary, the ship, moored on the River Thames between London Bridge and Tower Bridge since 1971, will offer a series of events kicking off during February’s half term.

The ‘Ship Shape’ programme will grant visitors a first-hand experience of the ship’s conservation activities, and allow them to learn how the vessel has been maintained on

Online screening for STIs ‘could double’ number getting tested

ONLINE SCREENING for sexually transmitted infections could double the number of people getting tested, a study in Southwark has revealed.

A trial involving 2,072 people aged sixteen to 30 living in Southwark and Lambeth showed half of those using the internet for 'e-STI testing' went on to get screened – compared to just a quarter of people who had a face-to-face meeting at a clinic or GP surgery.

Those who took part had at least one sexual partner in the last twelve months, stated willingness to take an STI test, and had access to the internet.

Participants were randomly allocated to either receive a text message with a web link to SH:24 - an e-STI testing and results service - or a text message with the web link to a list of details for local sexual health clinics.

Researchers found 50 per cent of the group using e-STI testing had completed an STI test, compared to just 26.6 per cent of those asked to physically go to health clinics. The group given details of SH:24 was offered postal self-sampling test kits for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV and syphilis and, when returned, were given results via text message or telephone and provided with online information about

safe sex and sexual health.

The study was led by London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and published in PLOS Medicine. First author Emma Wilson, from LSHTM, said: “E-STI testing is currently being implemented in the UK as one measure to meet increasing demand for STI testing, but there is surprisingly little evidence on whether it successfully encourages uptake.

“Our study, the first of its kind, aimed to investigate the effectiveness of e-STI testing for syphilis, HIV, chlamydia and gonorrhoea.”

Joint senior investigator Dr Caroline Free, also from LSHTM, added: “Sexual health clinics play an important role in community health but some people may find them inconvenient or stigmatising, which can stop them attending.

“More long-term monitoring and evaluation of e-STI testing services is needed, but our study showed that when e-STI testing was made available alongside face-to-face services, the number of people getting tested for STIs nearly doubled.”

Experts said a larger study is required to understand the effects of e-STI testing on STI diagnosis and STI cases treated.

They were also clear that e-STI testing should be considered as a complement to existing services.

Get on your bike for cycle revival

THE WORLD’S biggest bicycle celebration is heading to Herne Hill Velodrome this summer.

This June 14-16, the P&P World Cycling Revival will celebrate 200 years of the bicycle with a sporting, music and lifestyle festival.

There will be racing across all three days in what is expected to be the biggest event at the velodrome since the 1948 Olympics.

It will feature both popular events combined with lesser-known spectacles, including the Japanese

Keirin Trophy, the Brompton '48 Invitational and the Golden Wheel Trophy.

To give the racing a unique London feel, Condor Cycles are building authentic steel-framed replica bikes similar to those used

by British cycling legends Tom Simpson, Dave Bonner and Hugh Porter at the velodrome in the 1950s and 60s.

Former world and British champion David Millar will be among those riders competing in the Brompton '48 Invitational, which commemorates Herne Hill's involvement in the 1948 London

Olympics.

Visitors will be able to explore a huge array of exhibition space, which will include the history of the bicycle, run in partnership with The National Cycle Museum.

The event is expected to be the largest hosted at Herne Hill since the 1948 Olympics and is run with the support of Herne Hill Velodrome Trust.

First images of new-look Canada Water shopping area released

Updated plans for new high street to go on show EXCLUSIVE

UPDATED PLANS for a new town centre and high street in Canada Water, including detailed designs of the first phase, will go on show to the public tomorrow.

British Land is set to share the developed ideas for the Canada Water Masterplan, which covers a 46-acre site incorporating Surrey Quays shopping centre, the SE16 Printworks, Surrey Quays Leisure Park, and the Dock Manager’s Office and Dock Offices.

The development is expected to bring more than 20,000 jobs and up to 3,500 homes to the area, while delivering around 2 million sq ft of workspace and 1 million sq ft of retail, leisure, entertainment and community space.

Since the last main consultation in May 2017, British Land and the project team have been refining the proposals and developing the designs for the first detailed plots. This first phase includes the Surrey Quays shopping centre car parks between Deal Porters Way and Canada Water Dock, and Roberts Close. A public exhibition will run throughout January, featuring the updated plans, physical models of the masterplan and first detailed plots, and an interactive model.

A planning application will be submitted this Spring and, if approved, British Land expects to begin working on site in Spring 2019.

Land, said: “Following nearly four years of consultation, we’ll be sharing proposals with the local community which we believe will set the standard of high-quality design and active spaces which the masterplan will deliver.

Council drives ahead with garage shop plans

THE COUNCIL is pushing ahead with plans to turn garages beneath a housing block into shops, despite local opposition.

Plans have been drawn up to convert garages beneath Perronet House, in Elephant and Castle, into eleven shops and a café.

The council has said priority will be given to the traders who will have to

move out of the nearby shopping centre while it is redeveloped.

However, residents in the area have previously said they believe the traders deserve better quality.

They also added that those living in Perronet House desperately needed the garages as storage space.

MP demands action on ‘terrible overcrowding’ at train stations

Ms Harman tweeted about the issue last Thursday, after reports of severe overcrowding at Peckham Rye. “Am meeting @networkrail at end of month 2 demand action re terrible overcrowding at Peckham Rye & Denmark Hill,”she tweeted.

A spokesperson said that people first complained to Ms Harman about the overcrowding in early 2015, and that she saw it as “unacceptable that three years on people are still facing the same problems”.

Jasmine Ali, a Labour councillor whose ward includes Peckham Rye station, said: “Harriet is absolutely right to be concerned about overcrowding. Like her I have seen particular problems at rush hour and so urge Network Rail and GTR [Govia Thameslink Railway] to invest in improving access to both Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill stations so that local residents have the stations that they deserve.”

The tweet came in response to a photograph posted by commuter Craig Thomas, showing crowds gathered outside Peckham Rye station on Thursday morning. Mr Thomas described the morning as “chaos”, adding: “Not enough gates at the best of times and no staff manning them! Sort it out!”

MP HARRIET Harman will meet rail bosses later this month to “demand action” on “terrible overcrowding” at Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye overground stations.

Mr Thomas, who uses the station daily, added: “This was a bad day, but there have been similar instances in the past. The infrastructure of the station is archaic and not suitable for the footfall.”

Similar scenes were posted at Denmark Hill station in December, when queues spilled out onto the street outside. One user, Caroline Carr, described the scene as “survival of the fittest commuter” in response to a similar photo from @camberwellblog.

A spokesperson for Govia Thameslink Railway, which runs South Eastern rail, said that they were “addressing the significant increase in passenger numbers at Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye, and the pressures that this causes on the stations, particularly in peak travelling times.

They added: “Both stations are now priorities for investment to improve capacity.”

They said that the service will improve in December 2019 when the frequency of Thameslink trains will double, thanks to a new Cambridge to Maidstone East route.

Six Irish dancers qualify for World Championships

SIX GIRLS from Southwark have qualified for the 2018 Irish dancing World Championships in March.

The girls, ranging from ages eleven to eighteen will take the stage at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall to compete against dancers from as far afield as the United States, Russia and Australia.

Maisie Ryan, Grace Chapman, Hannah Cidon, Nancy Timon, MaryKate Nealon and Amber Murphy are all pupils at the Deborah Whelan dance school in south London. They had to make it through two rounds of qualifying to reach the final event, which runs from March 24 to 1st of

April. They will compete in youth categories ranging from under eleven to under 20.

Ms Whelan, herself a former world champion and member of Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance, said “It’s a massive achievement for these girls.

I’d be proud if we had one girl going but to have six is amazing. I’m very proud, it really is huge.”

She added: “The World Championships are the absolute pinnacle of Irish dancing and they’ll be competing against the best of the best.”

Propelled onto the world stage by shows such as Riverdance and Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance, Irish dancing is internationally popular, with schools in South America, Japan and South Africa.

New Aylesbury CPO inquiry starts A FRESH public inquiry into the council’s plans to force a group of leaseholders off the Aylesbury Estate has begun.

There are just four leaseholders left on ‘phase one’ of the Walworth estate, who stand in the way of the council’s plans to demolish and redevelop the site.

They have refused to budge, turning down offers for compensation in return for their homes, saying that it would not be enough money to stay in the area.

Sajid Javid, then Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, initially wanted to block the compulsory purchase order (CPO) for the remaining leaseholders’ properties.

However, in a blow to residents, the decisio was quashed in April last year, paving the way for the council to hold a fresh CPO inquiry.

The new inquiry began on Tuesday, January 9, at Southwark Council’s Tooley Street offices. The inquiry, led by government planning inspector Martin Whitehead, is estimated to last until January 31.

The scope of the inquiry is to request a CPO on the remaining leaseholder properties on the first development site.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “We have now reached voluntary agreement with 562 of the households on the first development site who have now moved, and are continuing to engage with the remaining four leaseholders.

“However, to ensure delivery of the new homes, we need the CPO in case we don’t reach voluntary agreement with the remaining leaseholders. We are pleased to have been given a second opportunity to put forward our case at a new CPO hearing. We look forward to the final decision and in the meantime we will continue to work with the leaseholders so that they can remain in the area if they want to.”

A PAIR of Peckham sisters who quit smoking when one of them became pregnant are now encouraging others to do the same.

Adele Moore, 30, was three months pregnant when she was referred to Guy’s and St Thomas’ stop smoking specialist Rowan Agate.

“My midwife mentioned my smoking at the first ten-week appointment in January 2017 but I carried on smoking until I was referred to Rowan,” said Adele.

“Somehow I had it in my head that his lungs would be the last thing to develop. As a smoker you’re always finding excuses but at the first meeting I saw a poster on the wall with a baby struggling to breathe in its mother’s tummy.

“I cried and that was it – we set a quit date for the following Monday.”

When Adele’s son Freddie was born he was a healthy size and weighed eight pounds, which Adele attributes to knocking her smoking addiction on

the head. Her 23-year-old sister Megan, the heavier smoker of the two, who smoked 25 cigarettes a day, accompanied her to the first stop smoking meeting at Dulwich Community Hospital.

“I had a nagging thing in my head that I wanted to quit and I knew I couldn’t support her unless I did it myself too,” said Megan.

Adele and Megan used Nicotine Replacement Therapy mouth spray and patches to reduce the smoking cravings when they quit. The women attend Rowan’s stop smoking clinic once a week for advice, support and to take a carbon monoxide reading, to keep them motivated to remain smokefree. “We couldn’t have stopped smoking without the support of Rowan; she’s been amazing,” said Adele.

Stop smoking specialist Rowan added: "We know it can be challenging to quit smoking, especially when you're pregnant and the cravings are very strong, but with NHS support you're four times more likely to quit smoking and we can help you stop smoking for good.

"Adele and Megan show that by stopping smoking you're not only improving your own health, but also the health of your children and setting a great example for the whole family."

16 babies were born at the hospital on New Year’s Day and 14 babies on Christmas Day. Parents Selamawit Tesfai and Marco Decarne welcomed their daughter, Camilla, into the world at 6.30pm weighing 9 lb 7 oz on Christmas Day – the largest baby of the day.

Selamawit, who also has a twoyear-old daughter called Sophia, said: “We knew she was going to be big but didn’t expect her to weigh this much, especially as she was born at 38 weeks.

“The same midwife who helped deliver Sophia two years ago was working on Boxing Day, which was a lovely surprise and made me feel at home.”

More than 6,600 babies are born at St Thomas’ Hospital each year.

consultant obstetrician at Guy’s and St Thomas’ has been recognised in the New Year Honours List for his work in maternity services.

Professor Andrew Shennan has been made an OBE (Officer of

Lynne Pacanowski, Director of Midwifery and Head of

the Order of the British Empire).

He is recognised for his awardwinning preterm surveillance clinic at St Thomas’ Hospital, which has been reproduced elsewhere in the country.

The clinic focuses on screening for, treating, and preventing premature birth. As a result of this novel approach, 90% of high-risk women seen at the clinic have had a healthy baby at full term, compared with a national average of 50-70% of women.

Professor Shennan said: “I am delighted to receive this recognition, but am basking in the reflected glory from the efforts of many.

“I really enjoy working with my patients. Making a difference to them is the reason why we do this.”

From January until June, the journal will feature the creations of

six patients following a competition run at Evelina London. Their masterpieces were made during art sessions led by the hospital’s play specialists.

January’s cover features a painting of an angel in fingerprints by seven-year-old Maryann

Cleary, who has neurological movement disorder, dystonia.

Her mother, Kathleen, says: “I was excited for Maryann when we found out her artwork had been chosen.

When I told her she was all smiles, and I could tell she remembered when she had done it.”

‘Blaring’ phonebox replacement ‘keeps resident awake’

A ROTHERHITHE resident has branded the new phonebox replacement outside his flat an anti-social nuisance after suffering weeks of disturbed sleep from people making loud phone calls at night.

Fifty-two-year-old IT worker Andrew Jones, says he was not informed that the old phone box on Rotherhithe New Road would be replaced by an ‘InLink’ service just metres from his bedroom window.

The new BT street towers provide free WiFi and phone calls on loudspeaker.

Late-night phone calls are audible from Mr Jones’ Tissington Court flat, and can often be heard over his television.

He says that even noise cancelling headphones and earplugs fail to block it out.

Mr Jones said: “It’s annoying and insulting that they have installed something with a speaker blaring out at all hours.

“How am I supposed to do my daytime job when I can’t get a decent night’s sleep?”

He told the News: “InLink’s service is useful for the general community but their money could have been better spent.

“You can filter out road noise. It’s not unexpected and I knew what I was getting into buying a flat on a main road. But the ringing is an alert noise and wakes me up.

“Unlike a traditional phone box there is no privacy or shielding to keep the sound in. People using it are raising their voices to be heard over the traffic, having screaming arguments, and kids sometimes make prank calls.”

Mr Jones says he has complained three times in the last month to BT’s InLink support team but as yet nothing has been done.

On December, 19 he wrote to

InLink again after a young woman had a ‘raging argument’ with her partner from 1:20am to 2:40am.

He wants the tower moved further down the road away from residential flats or removed altogether.

Cocktail maker causing stir in drink competition

AN EAST Dulwich cocktail master has been stirring up a storm in a drink-making competition

Caroline Hoskins, 36, is one of the twelve finalists to go through to the final round of Fords Gin Festive Cocktail Challenge.

Her mulled wine cocktail with a gin twist called “Christmas Spirit” caught the judges’ eye. She was up against 30 other London bars. This is the first time she has made it to the final in a cocktail competition, having previously competed in Putting Pen to Shaker in 2013.

“I was surprised to make it through to the next round but I’m excited,” Caroline told the News.

Originally from Oxfordshire, Caroline has been bartending for sixteen years and created the drink whilst working at House of Tippler in East Dulwich.

Bartenders had to create their own Christmas drink using Fords Gin, which is running the competition, to be in with a chance of winning a trip to New York. The finalists have had their drinks added to the menu of some of London’s most popular

cocktail bars including Bar Swift, The Wigmore and Satan’s Whiskers, for one month until January 1.

“I’m up against some of the world’s best bars so I’m quite nervous,” said Caroline about going through to the final which was due to take place on Wednesday, January 10, as the News went to press.

Cocktails are to be marked on taste, appearance, balance and flavour.

APPY NEW Year! 2017 was incredibly busy, with June’s surprise General Election, the ongoing chaos and uncertainty over Brexit, and thousands of people coming to me for help.

My priorities for 2018 include: Housing: Since 2010, homelessness has rocketed, home ownership has fallen, waiting lists for council homes have risen and the Lib Dem/Tory Coalition and subsequent Governments have axed funding to build the homes we need.

Southwark council has the largest council housebuilding programme in the country, but needs more powers over developers, the ability to borrow to meet demand, and a clearer partnership framework with Government to resolve the national housing crisis.

Community safety: Government cuts mean our borough has lost over 200 officers and PCSOs since 2010. Theresa May’s time as Home Secretary for the Coalition and now as PM has seen issues like moped and knife crime soar locally, often without punishment. Instead of giving our police the resources and powers they need, the Government is slashing another £400 million from the Metropolitan Police budget. I will keep highlighting the damage of these policies, including through my position as co-chair of the counterextremism group which will consider police resourcing soon.

Poverty: After years of concerted action by the last Labour Government, including legislating to end child poverty, the problem has risen dramatically following disastrous Coalition decisions which are now taking effect. About 40% of Southwark children live in poverty, with family debt arising from Universal Credit now contributing to growing problems and a dramatic rise in families reliant on local foodbanks. I will continue to use my role on the Work and Pensions Select Committee to focus on tackling poverty and the new All Party Parliamentary Group on Foodbanks which I set up in 2017 to help focus on the issues involved and identifying potential solutions for the Government.

On Brexit I will continue to keep my promise: I will never vote for anything that will harm our community. Brexit is already costing us more in the shops, to travel, and has cost some jobs. It will do more damage in 2018, especially given the Government’s disastrous approach. I’ll keep exposing the costs and consequences of Brexit and hope all MPs will feel braver about standing up for our country by not voting for anything that damages British people’s jobs, economic chances or undermines the UK’s future.

Return of Surrey Docks

THERE IS overwhelming community support for the return to Surrey Docks as our areas name, once stealthily stolen from us in the late ‘80s during the first wave of 'rebranding' our area post dock closures.

The straw poll is you can walk in to most Rotherhithe pubs, cafes, garages, Millwall, shops and parks and the public still refer to both the area and the Overground station as its original, nationally known nameSurrey Docks.

Local residents really do need to have a part to play in active involvement and engagement when it comes to naming of buildings, streets and stations in their area.

We have to always avert a repeat of the horrific miscarriages of democratic injustice, such as that of the station and that of the 'forced' Fisher land park naming down in Lagado Mews, when democratic public opinion was again squashed by the Council's Cabinet Members despite overwhelming resident objections.

Local people in Rotherhithe must come before the political posturing and that of finance driven developer marketing strategies.

Grenfell Inquiry

YOUR REVIEW of 2017 (Southwark News, 4 January, 2018 ) gave a reminder of the dreadful Grenfell Tower tragedy and the repercussions that have since spread far beyond Kensington and Chelsea.

It was therefore a pity that the government decided to publish its review of building regulations and fire safety just in time for the Christmas close-down.

This interim report, ‘Building a Safer Future’, has discovered what has been

known in the construction industry for decades that - building regulations are not fit for purpose; corners are always cut; and the mindset is to do things as cheaply as possible.

I'll leave the comments made by the Inquiry Chair, Dame Judith Hackitt, in her introduction to speak for themselves: “As the review has progressed, it has become clear that the whole system of regulation, covering what is written down and the way in which it is enacted in practice, is not fit for purpose, leaving room for those who want to take shortcuts to do so.”

“I have been shocked by some of the practices I have heard about and I am convinced of the need for a new intelligent system of regulation and enforcement for high-rise and complex buildings which will encourage everyone to do the right thing and will hold to account those who try to cut corners.”

“What is initially designed is not what is being built, and quality assurance of materials and people is seriously lacking.”

“The mindset of doing things as cheaply as possible and passing on responsibility for problems and shortcomings to others must stop” Lets hope that all the current construction in Southwark and around the country (private and public) will not suffer from these practices and will be safe for future generations to live in.

Calling cat-lovers

CATS PROTECTION would like to hear from cat-lovers who fancy a new challenge to volunteer for the UK’s leading feline welfare charity at their Blackheath & Deptford Branch in the new year.

Ten roles for volunteers at the Cats Protection branch, which is based across Blackheath, Brockley, Deptford, Central Greenwich and New Cross, are required in areas ranging from cat fostering to community driving. The branch currently needs six volunteer fosterers, two community cat champions and two drivers.

Fosterers can look forward to hands-on cat care taking care of felines on a short-term basis, either in cat pens in their garden or a spare room in their home, while one or more cats get back on their paws.

Community Cat Champions will work within the local community to promote the charity’s vital neutering work by engaging with relevant community groups at events, giving talks and assisting with neutering-related activities.

Local cat-loving drivers are also invited to volunteer to help transport cats to and from fosterers, new homes and vets with mileage expenses reimbursed.

Cat fosterers, community cat champions and volunteer drivers play a vital role as the backbone of a branch. These can be incredibly rewarding roles; becoming a volunteer for Cats Protection is a great way to meet new friends – both human and feline.

Cats Protection is the UK’s leading feline welfare charity. The Blackheath & Deptford Branch is part of the charity’s nationwide network of over 250 volunteer-run branches, 34 centres and over 100 charity shops that together help around 190,000 cats and kittens each year.

We know that smoking is bad for our health. It’s the biggest cause of preventable death in England, so making the commitment to give up is a positive step.

But many people are unsure how to do it, and need help in finding a product or method that will work best for them.

GPs can help by prescribing appropriate nicotine replacement therapy to help your body cope with withdrawal of nicotine, the addictive drug found in tobacco. Other treatments are also available from shops and pharmacies to help beat addiction and reduce withdrawal symptoms. The most suitable treatment will depend on personal preference, age, whether women are pregnant or breastfeeding, and any existing medical conditions.

Smokers also have the option of using e-cigarettes to aid their quit attempt or to cut down on how much they smoke.

There are many simple techniques to beat cravings, such as keeping your hands and mouth busy or writing lists of benefits of quitting.

Some people use physical props, like pictures of their children, to remind and motivate them. Others will take themselves away from situations where they used to smoke or find a replacement activity, like walking or stretching.

Setting a quit date, making a plan and selecting appropriate treatment are the first steps. If you need help to do this, visit your GP or call the Stop Smoking London telephone helpline on 0300 123 1044.

Super food for heroes

he scene for Bananaman was set with oversized comic strips papering the auditorium walls and signage directing us to Beano Town, Acacia Road and Bash Street High. Acacia Road is where ‘nothing ever happens every day’ and the school is where a teacher has been kidnapped and replaced by the evil Doctor Gloom, a ringer for Penfold in Danger Mouse, writes Michael Holland...

A sense of duty

Born in Berlin in 1901, Marie Magdalene “Marlene” Dietrich soon became a Hollywood legend and the most famous German woman in the world. However, when World War II was declared she was forced to choose between the country that she loved and what she knew was right, writes, Michael Holland...

Blight and the Mad Magician, all of whom want the super powers to take over the world. As the meteor crashes into earth Eric eats a banana and magically finds himself transformed into Bananaman, a masked and caped hero who can fly around the world in seven seconds, lift two ton cars and bash baddies with uprooted trees. Alas, he has the brains of a goldfish which means his powers amount to not a lot.

Leon Parris’s Bananaman is a spoof of all those Super Hero stories that have their own formulaic narrative and storylines that you can see coming. It pays homage to the old Batman TV series from the 60s, even incorporating a few ‘Biffs’ and ‘Kerpows’ for good measure. It is good, knockabout fun for all ages with some toe-tapping songs to

boot.

As is usual the best roles were given to the baddies and Marc Pickering’s Doctor Gloom steals the show for me, although Jodie Jacobs’ Crow was a solid, sturdy performance, and Matthew McKenna’s laconic, almost Hugh Grantish depiction of the hero was perfect here.

Bananaman the Musical is camp, over the top, funny fun that can be enjoyed by all the family as long as the kids are prepared for an 150 minute piece of theatre.

Renouncing her German citizenship, Dietrich joined the American Army and fought against her homeland in order to free her people from Hitler. She would entertain GIs in an evening dress, then put on a combat uniform and head to the front. Dietrich - Natural Duty is a real life tale of a legend that takes us through the Weimar Republic, the Golden age of

Hollywood, the Rise of Hitler, a world on the edge of collapse, and a long journey back to Berlin where it all began.

The play’s co-writer and performer in this one-man show, Peter Groom, who resides in Streatham, was a mere boy in a Newcastle drama club when he realised he wanted to take up acting as a profession.

He told the News: “They often invited in industry directors and professionals to give workshops and it was this that made me think I could do this as a career.” With his dad helping out the club with setbuilding and popping up as a ghost in A Christmas Carol the young Peter had all the support he needed. At 17 he came to London and enrolled at the Guildford School of Acting for three years.

Being ‘tall and gangly’ the actor was never drawn to ‘sweet and wholesome’ celebrities. “Marlene Dietrich,” he recalls, “who lurked behind cigarette smoke and seemingly didn't care what people thought of her was very empowering to me… I

And Peter Groom wasn’t finished there: “As our political landscape becomes more polarised this timely story of duty asks questions about our own moral and ethical obligations, and explores how the fight for freedom can take many forms whether in a sequin gown, combat uniform, or as a man in a wig.”

e know when we have seen a great film or play because we exit the building still dumbstruck from the experience and stay that way for some time after. And we immediately know when Cupid’s arrow has hit its target because there is no feeling like being in love again. But how many times do we get that feeling of something very special happening just from going to a restaurant?

Duddell’s, open just a few weeks, did that to me, writes Michael Holland.

church designer Michaelis Boyd has had to work hard in making the drear look palatable. The tall windows with stained glass insets, the wood panelling and reredos leave a touch of a previous existence, but it is the new gallery and marine-like colour scheme that bring Duddell’s into the 21st century.

Nina and I went for lunch so had the option of the Dim Sum menu or à la carte.

We chose from both, making sure we included some Chef’s Recommendations in those choices. One dish that has been brought over to Bermondsey is the Dim Sum Symphony, a selection of steamed dumplings comprising of goldfish shaped prawn dumplings, jade-leaf king crab dumplings and scallop and prawn dumplings. And when I say they looked too good to eat, I am not joking. The goldfish shaped dumpling looked like an extra in Finding Nemo - Its little eyes looked right up at me! And despite their prettiness they were the best dumplings I’ve ever had; no expense had been spared on the fillings. That also goes for the Duck Spring Rolls with Oyster Sauce dip - all meat in a crispy wrapping.

Nina had opened with the signature cocktail, Hybrid JIA Tea, a gin-based, fruity concoction that was enlivened with lavender sugar. For me a Japanese beer was just right for the dim sum.

Next to be served by the smartly uniformed team was the Spicy Almond

Soft Shell Crab. What this lacked in colour and presentation was made up for in taste. There was a battle going on between me and Nina, a fight to get to the almonds and chilli, but my cutlery outspooned her chopstick action.

With the first phase done it was time for a glass of wine before the main courses arrived. My Greek red was just about perfect: full-bodied enough to match the Black Angus Ribs, but with a lightness that complemented the Truffle Roasted Black Cod - Two classic Duddell’s dishes that have made the move from Hong Kong. I’m guessing that Nina’s Spanish white was just as accommodating because all I had heard from her for some time were superlatives like, superb, glorious and magnificent. And I echoed those words; the beef was unbelievably tender, the cod amazingly light, the cooking for each just perfect. We sat for a while in contemplative silence, just the sound of our wine being sipped in this former church that is now a temple of

culinary excellence.

Our server offering dessert menus eventually broke the spell that had been cast upon us.

After ordering two delectable Monzabillac dessert wines we asked for the Yuzu Tart, an exotic looking, cold custard-tasting delight with fresh yuzu and black sesame crisps, and the Madadamia nut délice, with kumquat and caramelised nuts on a chocolate base. It was difficult to choose a favourite of the two.

We did not want the meal to end, it was so, so good. But end it did and with so many other great dishes on the menu still to try we are already saving to return, because this kind of Michelin-starred fine dining does not come cheap.

Nevertheless, as expensive as Duddell’s may be you do get everything you pay for in regards to service, presentation, history, heritage and - above all - the finest Cantonese cooking found around these parts.

THE A2 GLA ROAD (GREAT DOVER STREET, LONDON BOROUGH OF SOUTHWARK) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF STOPPING) ORDER 2018 1. Transport for London hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1), (5), (7) and 15(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and is satisfied that these works will last in excess of 18 months for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is enable building construction works to take place at various sites in the London Borough of Southwark.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from except authorised vehicles from stopping at the south-western kerb-line of Great Dover Street between a point 6.5 metres south-east of the extended south-eastern building line No. 61 Great Dover Street and a point 3.5 metres north-west of the south-eastern building line of Nos. 1 to 27 Greene House, Burbage Close.

For the purposes of the Order authorised vehicles are those vehicles serving construction sites authorised by Transport for London.

The Order will be effective at certain times from 12.01 AM 13th January 2018 until the works have been completed. The prohibition will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs.

4. The prohibition will not apply in respect of: (1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes; (2) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by Transport for London.

5. The Order will revoke article 3 (10) of The A200 and A2 GLA Roads (St. Thomas Street and Great Dover Street, London Borough of Southwark) (Temporary Prohibition of Traffic and Stopping) Order 2015 .

6. The Order will be revoked upon completion of these works.

The London Borough of Southwark (Loading bays) (No. 1) Experimental Traffic Order 2018 The London Borough of Southwark (Waiting and loading restrictions) (Amendment No. 3) Experimental Traffic Order 2018

1. Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that on 11 January 2018 it has made the above experimental orders under sections 6, 9, and 10 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

2. The effect of the experimental orders will be:(a) to designate a new loading bay in BEDALE STREET to facilitate deliveries to the Borough Market area; (b) to reduce in length an existing loading bay in CATHEDRAL STREET, to aid traffic calming measures; (c) to redefine 'at any time' waiting restrictions in CATHEDRAL STREET; (d) to formalise the 'at any time' waiting restrictions in PARK STREET and WINCHESTER WALK; and (e) to introduce loading restrictions between 10 am and 6 pm in BEDALE STREET, CATHEDRAL STREET, PARK STREET, REDCROSS WAY, STONEY STREET and WINCHESTER WALK. 3. PLANNING ACT 2008 AND COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE LEVY REGULATIONS 2010 (AS AMENDED)

NOTIFICATION OF THE APPROVAL AND INTRODUCTION OF THE REVISED SOUTHWARK COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE LEVY CHARGING SCHEDULE

The Revised Southwark Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Charging Schedule was approved by Council Assembly on 29 November 2017 came into effect on 1 December 2017. The Revised Southwark CIL Charging Schedule has been subject to two rounds of public consultation and an Examination in Public. The Revised Southwark Community Infrastructure Levy Charging Schedule replaces the original Southwark CIL Charging Schedule, April 2015, which ceased to have effect after 30 November 2017.

The CIL is a levy which will be collected from developers / landowners and generates funding to help provide infrastructure that supports growth in the borough. Planning permissions granted on or after 1 December 2017 which add one or more dwellings or lead to an increase in floorspace of more than 100sqm on a development site may be required to pay the Revised Southwark CIL. The CIL is charged at a rate per square metre based on the proposed floorspace of developments (Gross Internal Area) and the rates vary according to different types of development and locations.

Hamlet win thriller to preserve Bostick lead Bostick League Premier Division result Dulwich Hamlet 4-3 Folkestone Invicta

DULWICH HAMLET remain five points clear at the top of the Bostick League Premier Division table after a thrilling 4-3 win over third-placed Folkestone Invicta last weekend in front of more than 2,000 supporters at Champion Hill.

Gavin Rose’s side went behind before goals either side of the break put them 31 up. Under pressure to keep winning, with Billericay in second with five games in hand, the hosts conceded again before going 4-2 ahead with five minutes left.

The visitors didn’t give up, though, and pulled one back in the 88th minute to make it a nervy last few minutes.

It was a tenth consecutive home league win for Dulwich, who weathered an early storm to eventually assert their authority.

The visitors dominated early on, but it was Hamlet who almost went in front only for Rickie Hayles to miss the target from a Kenny Beaney corner.

However, Folkestone got their noses in front when Ade Yusuff took possession of a loose ball to fire home.

LEE BURCH was pleased with the reaction of his side as Millwall Lionesses came from behind to extend their unbeaten league record this season.

Ella Rutherford scored a quick-fire double as the Lionesses overcame Sheffield 2-1 in their FA Women’s Super League 2 clash at St Paul’s last weekend.

The away side took an early lead through Hannah Cain before two goals in three minutes completed the turnaround to keep Millwall third, four points off Doncaster Rovers Belles in top spot but with a game in hand.

In the seventh minute, Cain raced onto a long ball before firing a shot in off the right-hand post past Sarah Quantrill. The Yorkshire side continued to press with Rhema Lord-Mears causing problems.

But the hosts finally got a foothold in the game and levelled in the 35th minute when Rutherford took advantage of indecision in the Sheffield defence to finish sharply.

going. As much as being unbeaten we want to win our home games.”

Boss Dean Harrison was without Luke Haidarovic, but was able to welcome back Rob Brown and Harry Draper to bolster his midfield.

Fisher started strongly and Ricthie Hamill was just off target with a freekick. Brown and Trey Small were next to go close to opening the scoring for the visitors, before Dan Flemming was frustrated as he sought the breakthrough just before half-time only to be denied.

Five minutes after the break, Toyeeb Babatunde picked up possession wide on the left before he nutmegged his opponent and pulled the ball back to Brown, whose first-time shot was blocked and Mathieu Ramsamy couldn’t turn in the rebound.

Fisher finally found a way though in the 63rd minute and it was a stunning effort from Ramsamy, his curling shot from outside the box coming down off the crossbar before the ball bounced back up and went in off the woodwork.

Harrison sent on Lee Friend for his home debut before Ramsamy and Toyo Adeshina had to depart.

With thirteen minutes left, Fisher added a second, and it was another quality strike. Small had a lot to do when he received the ball on the left, before he spun his marker to advance towards goal and fire in off the for post.

Fisher are five points behind Punjab United in second. They will try to take advantage of any slip-ups in front of them when they travel to Holmesdale on Saturday. Kick-off is 3pm.

IT IS a mark of how far Millwall have come that just over an hour into this clash against their recent bogey side Lions fans were cheering every pass from their playes as the fight left Barnsley.

This turned out to be a very comfortable win against the Tykes, who had won five successive games against Millwall.

It didn’t appear that would be the case eleven minutes in. Millwal had started well but there were signs of trouble before Adam Hammill crossed from the right and Brad Potts won possession to fire past David Martin, deputising for Jordan Archer.

Lions boss Neil Harris had made six changes to the side that had lost to Norwich on January 1, and there were times early in the game when players were not on the same wavelength. Jed Wallace had a go at Ben Thompson after

a pass went astray, and then Aiden O’Brien was left frustrated as Tony Craig sent another loose pass to a Barnsley player.

There were groans from the crowd and Tom Bradshaw could have added to the tension by making it 2-0 but his flick was deflected over.

One of the strengths of this Millwall side is that it has players renowned for skill and flair but who also hate the idea of losing. Wallace’s squabble with Thompson indicated that and Wallace could be seen fighting for possession in midfield as the Lions wrestled to regain the upper hand.

In the 35th minute, Craig then made one of those tackles that he seems to produce at exactly the right time and Wallace was scampering down the left.

His cross was low, behind Fred Onyedinma who couldn’t bring it under his control, but O’Brien had made a run off the right wing to sweep a left-footed effort past Adam Davies.

O’Brien hadn’t scored since he got the

winner against Leeds in September and this was a timely reminder of his ability to drift into areas unnoticed by the opposition. That’s probably his best natural trait and this was arguably his best performance of the season.

"I was delighted for Aiden,” Harris said afterwards. “He's been a goal threat in every game he's played, he's been close and denied from goal-line clearances and the woodwork, but to get a couple today will do his confidence a world of good.”

O’Brien could have added a second almost immediately but after flicking the ball over Davies, Tykes defender Dimitri Cavare was just about able to get back to clear.

O’Brien was at his confident and impudent best on Saturday and just before the break he almost had an assist after he sent a precise ball between Davies and his defence but Wallace could only prod across goal and wide.

At the start of the second half Millwall were clearly the dominant side and there was no more popular scorer to put them ahead than Thompson, as he arrived late in the box to drill home from O’Brien’s clever cross.

Thompson was mobbed by his teammates and it was a deserved personal reward for what had been such a typically combative display after an understandably nervy start. It was the midfielder’s first goal since April 2016 and if he felt under pressure to take his chance he rarely showed it as he grew into the contest and rivalled O’Brien for man of the match.

Five minutes later Barnsley were reduced to ten men when midfielder Joe Williams was shown a straight red card for a late tackle on Wallace, which promoted a strong response from a

number of Millwall players.

The goal of the game arrived four minutes after that, O’Brien nonchalantly bending the ball around Davies from 22 yards to all but seal Millwall’s passage to the fourth round.

Onyedinma’s strike was the icing on the cake as he chipped home from Steve Morison’s superb flick, and that meant that all the goals came from players who had come through the Lions’ youth system.

It was a close to perfect afternoon.

George Savile and James Meredith were rested and weren’t needed off the bench.

The only concern was Morison walking to the touchline to have a word with Harris before he was substituted for Lee Gregory.

The one pity was there weren’t more people at The Den to witness the performances of the three goal-scorers, who have thrived in under Harris’ charge.

But it was understandable so many stayed away, give how soon after Christmas it was and given neither manager had exactly hyped up the game in the week leading up to it. These sides have played each other a lot in recent years, and familiarity obviously bred apathy.

Barnsley defeated Millwall in the 2016 League One play-off final, but probably did them a favour as the Lions realistically weren’t ready for a Championship campaign.

Lloyd Isgrove and Adam Hammill scored that day at Wembley, but they got a first-hand look at how much better a side Millwall are now.

This is a group of players that will approach the fourth round high on confidence and knowing wins in this competition are a welcome bonus.

Laid-back attacker taking it all in his stride EXCLUSIVE

FRED ONYEDINMA admits it sometimes appears he is too laid back and people might not like it – but he insists that’s just the make-up of his character.

Onyedinma scored his first goal of the season in the 4-1 win over Barnsley last weekend after starting up front with Steve Morison.

Onyedinma, 21, feels that’s his best position, allowing his “free spirit” to flourish as he has more chances to run and stretch defences.

He admits his demeanour on the pitch may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but he says his calm personality helps him to be a better player.

“I’m the type of character who is quite laid back. I don’t get nervous. I’m pretty chilled with everything, I don’t get butterflies. I get excited but not nervous.

I’ve always been like that,” Onyedinma explained.

“Sometimes people might not like it, but that’s how I’ve always been and I think it has helped me. Being easy-going and a free spirit helps with the way I play.

“I’m not sure where it comes from. I just like to have fun and when I’m doing that that’s when I’m enjoying football and playing my best.

Boss pleased as Millwall get ninth home tie in last ten draws Fred Onyedinma says his calm demeanour might not be to everyone's liking

NEIL HARRIS said getting Rochdale in the fourth round of the FA Cup was “a good draw” – but he admitted he wanted a Premier League side.

Millwall reached the fourth round after their 4-1 win over Barnsley on Saturday, and afterwards Harris said he would like to meet West Ham. Rochdale took four league points off the Lions last season, after a 3-2 win at The Den and a 3-3 draw at Spotland.

Rochdale have beaten Bromley, Slough Town and Doncaster without conceding a goal to reach the last 32.

Keith Hill’s side are, though, battling against relegation to League Two and are currently six points off safety.

“We know ourselves how tricky it is to get to the fourth round so they’ve done well to get through because they’ve had a couple of tricky games so far,” Harris said.

“The main thing is we are at home, that was the priority. For us and Rochdale, you want a Premier League side or local opposition, really. If you don’t get that then you want a winnable one. Rochdale will look at it and think they did well

against Millwall last year, got four points from two games, and have a chance of going through.

“Both sides wouldn’t have it top of their list of priorities. Rochdale want to stay in League One and we want to stay in our division.

“It gives is another distraction, it was a good distraction Saturday and a good performance. It’s a good draw.”

The fixtures will take place the weekend beginning January 26.

Millwall’s Championship clash against Derby County, originally scheduled for January 27, will be rearranged.

but at the end of the day it’s a game and all you can do is try your best.

“The gaffer understands the way it is with me, he tells me to play with freedom and expression, and to have fun. That’s what I try to do.

“When I’m playing up front I have more freedom to do more things. I like to be free rather than rigid. Of course, if I have to play on the wing I’ll try and do my best.

“But playing up front with our formation suits me better. It utilises my pace and it’s good to play up there with Moro.”

Onyedinma excelled again in the FA Cup on Saturday – after his performances in the competition last season alerted a number of Premier League sides to his talent – and Barnsley struggled to deal with his pace and movement.

He had a first-half chance after reading a flick from Morison but saw his shot deflected over.

But although he hadn’t scored this season, typical of his character he didn’t let that miss affect him as he calmly clipped in Millwall’s fourth.

“I don’t know what it is about the competition, it might be the different footballs!” Onyedinma joked.

“I was looking forward to playing and thought I would have a chance to score, so I’m happy I took it. Steve and I have a good understanding and that comes from talking to each other. It comes with

more experience playing with each other as well.

“The gaffer tells me to always try to anticipate what the big man is going to do and get on his flick-ons.

Unfortunately I didn’t score in the first half but took my chance later.

“The defender poked his leg out last minute but luckily I got there before him and I thought, ‘be composed and try to get it on target’.

“I’m not shy to use my left foot, I’m not totally based on my right.

“I’ve scored against Barnsley before and I thought it could be my day. That’s how I try to look at every game.

“Sometimes you do think about mistakes but you can’t dwell on them because it can affect your performance.

“I think all players replay games they’ve played in their head, you look at what you did right and that can help you in the next game if you get into a similar position again.”

Onyedinma could be back on the bench this weekend, with Lee Gregory likely to resume his partnership with Morison in attack.

But Onyedinma won’t let that get him down as he continues to focus on his own development.

“I don’t get too excited when I score, because in football there are ups and downs and you just try to keep a level head and try to keep improving,” he said.

“I just think about trying to do the best I can for the team.”

Midfielder reveals Lions pair helped lift his mood when he was injured

MILLWALL MIDFIELDER Shaun Williams has revealed the injury he picked up in September could have been a lot more serious – and ruled him out for most of the season.

Williams returned ahead of schedule last month for the Lions after ten weeks on the sidelines with a knee ligament injury he suffered against Reading.

But it could have been an awful lot worse as a full tear to the ligament would have meant an operation and six months out.

That was the length of time Byron Webster (pictured, inset, bottom right) faced out of action, after he tore cruciate ligaments against Barnsley, just four days after Williams’ setback.

The Lions pair shared progress of their recoveries on social media, and Williams said he saw another side to his team-mate as he praised Webster’s professionalism and determination to get back to full fitness.

Williams was fortunate that he didn’t get a similarly damaging injury after not realising the extent of it after it happened.

“It was an innocuous tackle, I thought it was just a little knock so I didn’t think too

much of it. The next day I thought I’d just miss a couple of training sessions and then get on with it after that,” Williams explained.

“I went for a scan and unfortunately it was an LCL (lateral collateral ligament) tear. It was just hanging on by a thread but luckily enough I didn’t need an operation.

“I think it was four to six months out if I had needed an op.

“It was a bad situation but I had good company at the time. Byron had some good news [Monday], he’s able to start running on the treadmill and hopefully then progress on the grass. I’m delighted for him.

“The way Byron has handled it, he has been the ultimate professional. He’s done everything right, he’s worked hard at it every day. I’ve actually seen a change in him from when he’s fit.

“It’s another hurdle in your career and one of those things you’ve got to deal with. Byron is always bubbly and it helped me along the way because in the mornings I’m not always in the best of moods!”

Williams also saw a different side to his own character as, at 31, there was a sense of urgency to get back to full fitness.

He said: “I wasn’t actually meant to be back training until Boxing Day, but that’s the day I started my first game back.

“I probably saw a bit of change as well

in myself, determination-wise, to get back. I’m in the last year of my contract and it ain’t the longest career. Maybe if I was younger I wouldn’t have been as focused on it.

“I literally lived like a monk for ten weeks and luckily it paid off. I’d have an occasional glass of wine but I didn’t touch a drop when I was injured. I wouldn’t class myself as a drinker anyway. I’ve got two young kids so waking up with a hangover is like waking up in hell! It’s not really worth it, is it?”

Williams also had another team-mate to lift his spirits on the way to work in the mornings, as Jed Wallace (pictured, inset, top right) had bought a house on the same street earlier this season.

Williams explained how that came about. “He said to me, ‘I know you live in Biggin Hill, there’s this estate, blah, blah, blah...’. And I said, ‘oh yeah, tell me more’. It turned out not only was it the same estate as mine but it was three or four doors down. I told him it was great, a gated community and friendly people.

“I hadn’t realised because the people didn’t have it up for sale. I don’t know how they advertised it but it was a quick sale and he was in within six to eight weeks. I keep the door closed when I see him coming up the road!

“No, we drive in together. When I was injured I couldn’t drive for the first four

weeks.

He helped massively. But I’ve been back driving two months and I’m still driving him in!”

Williams’ recovery went smoothly and he wasted little time testing the strength of his knee when he went into a fierce 50/50 tackle against Wolves that, given some of the decisions that have gone against Millwall this season, briefly seemed to raise the possibility of a red card.

“People were worried about my knee and then the gaffer was worried about a red card, but I didn’t think about either,” Williams said.

“I felt confident and the injury wasn’t playing on my mind. If it had I could have actually got injured, if you half-heartedly go into tackles normally you come off a little bit worse.”

Williams has an appearance clause in his contract that he is close to triggering, giving him another year at least at Millwall, which will bring him up to fiveand-a-half years at the club.

He admits Millwall is “a big part of me now”, after a difficult period following the sacking of the manager that had brought

him to the club, Ian Holloway, and his battle to win a regular first-team place under Neil Harris.

Williams reckons he still has plenty of playing years ahead of him.

“With my style of play I could probably play until I’m 40 because it’s obviously the ball that moves quicker than anybody,” he said.

“I’m just taking it game by game and hopefully I can play for as long as I can. I started my career well here but the way the results went leading to the manager getting sacked, everybody was caning everyone.

“It’s the longest I’ve been at any club so it’s a big part of me now.”

Neil Harris rested a number of players for the FA Cup win over Barnsley last weekend, and admits he has a “selection dilemma” against Alex Neil’s side.

Although Gregory and Saville should return in place of Fred Onyedinma and Ben Thompson – despite both youngsters getting on the scoresheet against the Tykes – Shaun Williams is pressing for inclusion in the line-up ahead of Tunnicliffe.

“Shaun’s come back to fitness really well after working really hard on his rehab,” Harris said. “In Shaun, Ben, George and Ryan we have four excellent midfield players that can all play in the team with each other, which is a big bonus for us.

“At the moment the pecking order is nigh-on even. It gives me a selection headache going into the weekend.”

Tom Elliott could return to boost the Lions’ attacking options, though Shane Ferguson will miss the fixture.

Harris said: “Tom has an outside chance, he’s working hard with the medical department at the moment.

Harris is an admirer of the work Neil has done this season.

“Preston have been really impressive, I really enjoy watching them,” Harris said. “They’re a bit similar to us in terms of being a high-tempo, high-energy, aggressive side.

“They very rarely play with two centre-forwards so it’s slightly different to what we do. They’ve got players at good ages. Other than the results they’ve achieved to be in a really healthy league position, they’re also probably twelve months in front of us as a club, at the moment.

“Maybe twelve to eighteen months given what they’ve spent, recruitment-wise.

They have recruited really well in the summer and are trying to do really good business at the moment.

“Alex Neil demands a lot from his players in terms of work-rate and energy. They’re a dangerous side, they’re a big physical team.

“They will be a bit similar to Barnsley and QPR in the sense that they will be able to mix it at The Den, definitely, which means we need to raise our game again this weekend.

“My players are certainly capable of doing that, as they showed for a half-hour, 40-minute period either side of half-time last weekend.

“It’s a really good game to be involved in. I’m looking forward to it easily as much as I was Wolves and QPR during the Christmas period, and probably more so than any other game this season because it’s going to be a cracking contest.

“There will be a lot of energy, a high work ethic and two sets of fans who will really enjoy watching it.”

Neil could also recall a number of first-team regulars who were rested last Saturday. Neil has added Louis Moult from Motherwell and Billy Bodin from Bristol Rovers to his squad in January.

The sides drew 0-0 at Deepdale earlier this season.

Lions linked with Wolves defender - as Southend want Craig

MILLWALL’S TRANSFER plans were affected by last weekend’s FA Cup action, boss Neil Harris has hinted.

The Lions have been linked with a move for defender Kortney House, 22, but it remains to be seen whether they will pursue him after he played in Wolves’ 0-0 draw against Swansea in the FA Cup third round last Saturday, which cup-ties him this season.

Millwall have a good relationship

with Wolves, having done business with them over George Saville and Jed Wallace.

Harris insisted Millwall won’t compromise their approach in this transfer window.

“I’ve seen us being linked to a couple of players on various websites. We are busy working on players, but no one is any nearer coming through the door than over the last couple of weeks,” Harris said.

“First, that’s dictated by the FA Cup weekend when a lot of players we have been interested in played or were on the bench for teams.

“Second, the market at the moment is one in which everybody wants to sell their players rather than loan them. People want to recoup money, a lot of clubs are dictated to by Financial Fair Play and want to bring in money to reinvest in their team.

“It’s not a loan market at the moment in the Championship and Premier League. There have been some deals in League One and League Two. It’s surprised me how few deals there have been and the five or six there are each day are getting maximum focus because that’s all there is happening.

“It’s a case of sticking to our plan of doing business that suits us and being patient until things start to move.”

Meanwhile, Southend are one of a number of clubs chasing Lions club captain Tony Craig.

Craig, 32, has been frustrated with his lack of chances this season owing to the good form of James Meredith, who has started every league game.

Craig started just his fourth game of the season against Barnsley last weekend, and Harris stressed that if Craig were to leave they would have to have a replacement lined up.

“Any player that comes to my door in January and says he wants to leave and play first-team football is a conversation to be had,” Harris said.

“The lads that have gone on loan – Tom King, Sid Nelson and James Brown – are three players for the future for us. They’re all gone to get experience.

“Anybody else that knocks on the door because of a lack of opportunity is a conversation to be had, but ultimately I can’t let anybody go without bringing someone in, because the squad is not big enough as it is.”

NEIL HARRIS has insisted there is “no doubting” Lee Gregory will be with the club next season – despite less than six months left in his current deal.

Gregory, 29, last signed a new contract in September 2016, but it includes an option of a further twelve months.

Former Mansfield striker Gregory, who was signed from Halifax by Ian Holloway in the summer of 2014,

has become a key figure under Harris and is a fan favourite at The Den. He has scored 48 goals in 140 league games for the club, and is crucial to the style of play Harris has implemented.

Harris is confident Gregory will be with Millwall beyond the summer, with talks set to take place over his future.

“Lee Gregory is one of those players who has got an extension in his contract,” Harris confirmed.

“Lee’s form has been excellent and he could easily have doubled, tripled the number of goals he’s got this

season.

“Lee’s future lies with Millwall next season, there is no doubting that. It’s just when we get around to sitting down with him and exercising that option.

“Lee is not knocking on my door and I’m not bringing Lee into my office to discuss next year. The option is there for us to take up.

“He’s a quality player, I love working with him. He’s a natural goal-scorer but has been really unfortunate in front of goal this year.

“But his performances have shown everyone his quality. The fans are singing his name two or three times

a game and that’s because of his work-rate. He’s a team player, which is the biggest thing, but he’s a goalscorer and wants to play games.”

Meanwhile, another Millwall forward, Jamie Philpot, has returned to the club following his loan spell at Woking.

Philpot, 21, scored five times in 30 games for the National League side this season, but it doesn’t appear they want to extend his stay.

Philpot won’t be involved in the Lions first-team squad. Millwall are likely to try to secure another loan move for the centre-forward, who is out of contract this summer.

Smith, 22, is back with the club after his loan spell with Swindon was cut short recently, and he played for the Lions under-23s in their 1-1 draw at Cardiff on Monday.

Millwall are hoping to secure a move for the striker this month so he can build up senior experience with a view to challenging for a first-team squad place next season.

However, if Smith makes an appearance for Millwall, that would rule out another loan move this campaign.

“We’re quite relaxed with that one,” Harris said. “In an ideal world you would say Harry would go back into League Two and try and get a similar number of appearances to what he got in the first half of the season, nine or ten starts and the same off the bench would be ideal.

“However, how I like the team to play means we like to have a big man in the team. We have been a bit thin at times, with injuries to Tom Elliott more than anything.

So Harry’s opportunity might come here in the second half of the season.

“We’re certainly not putting pressure on Harry to go out the door and get some football. What we have to be mindful of is that Harry can’t play for more than two sides in the same season. He’s played for Swindon already and if he plays for us in the next couple of weeks then he can’t go on loan.

“That’s my dilemma at the moment as to whether to involve him. It’s not just about what’s good for us tomorrow, what’s good for us next week, it’s about what’s good for Harry and his future at Millwall. If he’s going to be fighting for a place next year in the squad, then as much experience this year is key for him.”
