THE FIRE brigade has praised passers-by who rushed to free three children, after a tree fell on them on New Year’s Eve.

The youngsters were walking past a tree in the car park of Dunkirk House, off Long Lane, Borough, at about 3.20pm on December 31 when it fell.

Members of the public are said to have rushed to the aid of the girl and two boys and managed to release them.

Firefighters arrived and treated the children before they were taken to

hospital by London Ambulance Service.

It is thought the tree fell because it was rotten, rather than as a result of the wind.

Southwark Council leader Peter John said the council would be looking into the cause of the incident.

What will 2018 bring?

017 IN Southwark was dominated by events with ramifications that spread far beyond the borough itself, with the London Bridge terror attacks and the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

Indeed whilst Grenfell wasn’t in Southwark, the fallout from this horrific blaze, with the loss of so many lives, spread to our part of London, with the resulting upheaval on the Ledbury Estate, not to mention the painful memories of our own fatal fire at Lakanal House in Camberwell. Residents everywhere, but particularly in high-rise buildings, need to know that they are not at risk, and the huge amount of work that is being done in this regard is well worth it - whatever the cost.

The attacks at London Bridge brought the eyes of the world to this part of the capital and left the local community in shock. But as our review of the year reminds us, there were acts of tremendous courage on the night, whilst people came together in the aftermath to pay their respects and refuse to be cowed.

Almost on a side note, we had a snap general election, with all three Labour MPs re-elected, and the coming year will see politics continue to be dominated by Brexit nationally, while the housing crisis will no doubt prove to be the defining issue yet again in Southwark.

Our own local authority has thought of some imaginative ways to try to deal with the ongoing housing crisis, but this issue will remain a massive political hot potato. And as the current administration’s pledge to build 11,000 new homes by 2043 plays out, all political parties will be at the ready with the calculators to see just how well that is going. Housing, the need to tackle the ever rising adult care budget and further cuts to our schools and community groups will dominate the local elections planned for May, along with the debate over austerity.

How far can local government cut back before the whole service it offers starts to buckle?

Watch also for how the row with central government over King’s finances unfolds.

With most of the original community heading to Kent, the fate of Millwall and chances they may be forced out to follow suit will be watched closely. Let’s hope this is a turning point in the exodus and they remain and thrive.

DULWICH MAN FIGHTS TO SAVE NAZIS’ COLDITZ CAMP

A DULWICH-BORN man is hoping to preserve a famous WWII prisoner of war camp where he now lives in Germany.

During WWII, a prisoner camp known as Oflag IV-C was set up at Colditz Castle, sat atop a steep cliff overlooking the River Mulde, in Saxony.

Soldiers deemed escape risks were imprisoned at the camp and many attempted to dig their way out during the war.

One of these men was Airey Neave, a British army officer who became the first Briton to escape from Colditz.

The castle and the town it sits in are both steeped in history, however former Dulwich resident Richard Vero fears this could be lost.

The 66-year-old, who now lives in Germany where he is president of the Colditz Preservation Society, said the castle and tunnels were under threat from renovation work.

He added that the town relies on tourism trade and that many people have heard of Colditz but are unaware they can visit the camp.

"Colditz is probably the most famous prisoner of war camp from the Second World War," he told the News.

"Everyone knows of Colditz, but no one realises how much they can see in the castle and the town, particularly with reference to the prison camp in the castle.

"It was a camp for what they called naughty boys; GĂśring set it up and told Hitler nobody would ever escape from there but they ended up putting all the best escapers there so it was a bit like an escape university.

"The castle has slowly been renovated

inside and all of the tunnels were going to be filled in but I managed to save the French tunnel which is famous.

"There's talk of renovating the theatre building - which is famous for the British cutting a hole beneath the stage to escape - into a working theatre.

"We must stop that because that's where the famous Airey Neave escaped from "and it's the same as when the war ended - it's like walking in there in 1944 with the hole in the stage and the same wallpaper."

Mr Vero, who left Dulwich in 2012, said he felt it was his "duty to a certain extent to keep defending the memorials and history of the castle".

"It is my strong belief that the memorials to these great people should always be preserved," he said.

"It would be a tragedy for Britain if our history was lost and we have to defend it as best we can."

Crews from Dockhead and Old Kent Road fire stations attended and the scene was made safe by 4.04pm.

London Fire Brigade Southwark tweeted on Tuesday, January 2, to thank those who rushed to help the

children.

“Thank you to all those that came to the children's aid,” they said in a tweet. “#Dockhead and #Old Kent Road fire crews attended from #Southwark.”

The News contacted London Ambulance Service but did not receive a response by the time of going to press.

Pensioners treated to pub feast

The multi-Olympic winning athlete will go head-to-head with Callum Hawkins, who came fourth in this year’s IAAF World Championships marathon in London.

The event is open to adults and children and will take place on Sunday, March 4, 2018.

The Big Half’s 13.1-mile route will begin at Tower Bridge and finish in Greenwich, passing through the boroughs of Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Lewisham and Greenwich.

The Little Half – a relay event – will take place on the same day starting in Southwark Park at 12.30pm and finishing at Cutty Sark in Greenwich, and is open to people of all ages and abilities. There will also be the Big Half Festival going on throughout the day, with food and music on offer in Greenwich Park.

Three different types of entries are open for the Big Half event; the Good for Age category, for runners showcasing impressive times in previous half marathons; the Championship category, for runners wishing to take part in the 2018 British Half Marathon Championships; the charity entries category for runners wishing to sign up with charities. Good for Age and Championship entries close on January 5.

A PUB in Peckham got everyone into the Christmas spirit last month by throwing a charity dinner for residents for the second year in a row.

The Duke of Sussex on Friary Road put on a full spread for elderly residents who came in from Greenwich and Elimhouse Community Association, a day centre in Peckham.

“It’s proven to be a really good day both years. It’s been lovely to see the same faces again,” said Finton Hogan, 39, the pub’s licensee and the son of 69-year-old pub landlord Michael Hogan.

Members of the Greenwich-based charity Skills and Care, who work with members of the Gurkha

community, enjoyed roast lamb and a Christmas dance. Sonia Thapa, 39, founder of the charity, highlighted the importance of these events around Christmas time.

“A lot of the people here today are alone and without their families at

this time of year,” she told the News: “For many of the women here it’s the first time they’re coming into a pub. It takes a lot of preparation and it means a lot to them.”

The dinner took place on Wednesday December 20. It was held

as part of Heineken’s nationwide campaign, Brewing Good Cheer, which is going on in Heineken-owned pubs all over the UK this month.

“Christmas can be a difficult time of year for people that are socially isolated. We’re really proud of our

pubs and their roles in the community,” said Johanna Dring, 34, Heineken’s personal relations manager.

The event was particularly popular this year, attracting 40 people, fifteen more than the year before.

“We started last year and it’s got bigger. We may even do two days next year if it continues to grow,” said Michael.

Evelina baby goes on to be national sailing champion

A TEENAGER who had lifesaving heart surgery at the Evelina Children’s Hospital as a baby has just represented the UK at a worldwide sailing championship.

Eighteen-year old Billy VennisOzanne competed at the Youth Sailing World Championships in China that ran from December 6 to December 16, after beating 150 UK competitors to win the national championship at home.

He underwent open-heart surgery at the age of just two weeks old to correct a birth defect that meant that the two main blood vessels in his heart were connected to the wrong heart chambers.

“It’s taken a lot of hard work to get to this point, and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help and support of my parents and the great team at Evelina London Children’s

Hospital,” said Billy.

Billy finished twentieth at this year’s world championship, and was the top placing British competitor at the 2017 European 29er championships, coming in at ninth place.

“To see him develop into a grown man who has achieved such great things in a short amount of time has been incredible, and those dark days are long gone and forgotten about, with only his scar to tell the story,” said Billy’s father Andre Ozanne.

Dr Owen Miller, consultant in paediatric cardiology at the hospital, has followed Billy as an outpatient for most of his life.

“We are delighted that he has grown into such a healthy young man, and we are all very proud of his success as a sailor. We watched Billy’s progress at this month’s world championships and we are delighted with his top 20 finish,” he said.

Nursing home places ‘to treble over three years’ www.southwarknews.co.uk/news

THE NUMBER of nursing home places available in Southwark is expected to more than treble by 2020.

Southwark currently has three care homes registered to provide nursing care – Tower Bridge and Queens Oak, which are both rated good by the Care Quality Commission, and Burgess Park, rated inadequate.

However, due to its inadequate rating, the council has not been placing people in Burgess Park, and Queens Oak, which is block-booked by Lambeth Council, has not been accepting Southwark residents.

In a bid to resolve the current lack of good quality nursing home provision, the council plans to develop two nursing homes in the borough to provide more beds.

There are plans to redevelop the mothballed nursing home site in D'Eynsford Road, Camberwell, into a "purpose-built nursing home for the 21st century" with 70 to 80 beds.

A new care provider has also taken over Burgess Park with the intention of

remodelling the nursing home to increase capacity, improve standards of care, and modernise facilities.

Planning applications are expected for both of these in the near future.

As a result, a total of 361 nursing home beds are expected to be available by 2020, compared to the 115 beds currently in use.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for adult care and financial inclusion, said: “The strategy that the cabinet agreed will increase the number of nursing home places available to us in the borough from 115 currently to 361 by 2020.

“As a council we are committed to working with the Southwark NHS Clinical Commissioning Group, care providers and other partners to ensure that there are sufficient nursing home places available for Southwark residents.

"With our partners, we want to ensure that our residents have safe, highquality care in homes that are fit for purpose and reflect industry standards.

"We are currently working with care providers to plan for the future and increase nursing home capacity in the borough.”

Matron Tina Hemblade, from Crawley in West Sussex, has been at Guy’s and St Thomas’ for 34 years.

“St Thomas’ was my local hospital as a child so I was always proud to work here and it’s a Trust you can be proud to be a part of,” she said.

Speaking at the awards, Sir Hugh

Taylor said: “This is our opportunity to thank staff who have achieved such long service for the Trust. That great core of experience, expertise and commitment is one of the things that makes this such a fantastic place to work.”

“It was really nice to be recognised for my hard work at the event. I think I’ll be here until I retire,” said Terry Prescott, who has been part of the nursing team since 1991.

A LIFETIME SPENT FIGHTING INJUSTICE JOHN MULRENAN 1954 - 2017

In his younger years

TRIBUTES HAVE been paid to a life-long trade unionist who fought tirelessly against inequality and injustice until his death shortly before Christmas.

John Mulrenan, who grew up in Elephant and Castle, worked for trade unions Southwark Nalgo and Southwark Unison before retiring in the mid 2000s.

During his time as leader of Southwark NALGO in the 1980s, he led a successful council-wide strike over the pay and conditions for residential care workers.

He went on to become branch secretary of Southwark Unison in the ‘90s and spent the last decade of his life training shop stewards for various unions and offering informal employment advice to anyone who needed it.

John was born on August 22, 1954, to Mary Mulrenan, a cleaner, and Michael Mulrenan, a bricklayers labourer, who emigrated to London from Ireland in the ‘40s.

He was the fifth of eight children and grew up in a two-bedroom council flat in Ash Street, which was later demolished to make way for the Heygate Estate.

After leaving school he worked for Barnardo's for a time before studying at Brighton Polytechnic University and later worked as a librarian in libraries across Southwark.

He met his wife Alison Brewer through the Labour Party and the pair married in 1987, before having daughters Claire, now 30, and Rachel, 28.

The couple later divorced but remained close friends until his death in December.

Alison went on to have another daughter, Lauren, 23, to whom John was very close and treated as his own.

Paying tribute to her father, Rachel Mulrenan described him as a "south Londoner through and through" whose passion in life was standing up for others.

"I think the key motivator for my Dad was a hatred for all kinds of

inequality and injustice," said Rachel.

"He was a very principled person and had a strong sense of personal justice. He came from a very working class family and was a champion of workers.

"He also really hated being told what to do so I think he went into a role where he wouldn't be."

Rachel described her dad as having a "great sense of humour" and being laid back in his personal life but organised and principled in his working life.

"He was really devoted to his family and had quite simple tastes," she said.

"He developed some quite eccentric hobbies later in life; he really enjoyed going to second-hand shops and auctions and enjoyed watching Salvage Hunters.

"He also enjoyed reading and loved local history and politics.

"Music was a big part of my Dad's life - he came of age in the punk era, and was particularly keen on The Clash, Iggy Pop, The Kinks and The

"My Dad was a south Londoner through and through - to the point where he referred to anywhere north of the Thames as 'the North'."

Rachel said politics was her father's passion in life.

"When I was born, my Dad had to leave a picket line to join my Mum at the hospital," she said.

"He also almost missed the birth of my older sister Claire because he was out campaigning for Labour and he hadn't got to grips with how to use a

John was diagnosed with lung cancer in May 2016 and remained optimistic and active until September this year.

He passed away in Lewisham Hospital on December 19, aged 63.

John's funeral will be held at 3.15pm on Monday, January 8, at Hither Green Crematorium, in Lewisham, SE6 1TP. John's wish was for guests to wear informal dress and make donations to Care4Calais (http://care4calais.org/) rather than floral tributes.

A BERMONDSEY artist has won an award at the Black British Entertainment Awards.

Visual artist Eugene Ankomah, 38, works as an art tutor at the Salmon Youth Centre on Old Jamaica Road.

He was presented with the Best Creative Artist award.

The competition was made up of five other artists including an actor, an animator and a ballet company.

The ceremony took place on Saturday

16 December at Porchester Hall in Bayswater.

“Actually living that was just surreal. It all felt so strange but it was a really glorious moment,” Eugene told the News.

JUNE: Emotions ran high as businesses and the community “reclaimed” Borough Market after it was closed for eleven days following the June 3 terror attack.

Hundreds gathered in the market place to observe a minute’s silence before a trader, visibly with tears in his eyes, rang the bell to declare the market officially open.

AUGUST: Southwark Council was accused of an “epic” waste of money after splashing out more than £700,000 on nearly 2,000 Apple products - including iPads and iPhones - for its staff and councillors.

The council argued the reduced spend on paper would save £28,000 per year, and have the environmental benefits of using less paper.

BRAVERY AND HEROISM AMID THE CAR

IT WAS a night like any other at Borough Market with locals and tourists soaking up the warm summer evening when terrorists struck, killing eight, injuring 48, and changing countless lives forever.

Shortly before 10pm on June 3, three terrorists wearing fake suicide vests ploughed a hired van into people on London Bridge, before jumping out and stabbing innocent revellers in and around Borough Market.

Canadian Christine Archibald, 30, and Australians Kirsty Boden, 28, and Sara Zelenak, 21, were killed in the attack.

Frenchmen Xavier Thomas, 45, Sebastien Belanger, 36, and Alexandre Pigeard, 26, also died, as did Spaniard Ignacio Echeverría, 39, and 32-year-old James McMullan, who lived in Hackney.

It took days for some families to find out what had happened to their relatives and an inquest into the victims' deaths was opened and adjourned later that month.

The market was closed for eleven days while a police investigation and cleanup operation took place.

By the time it eventually reopened, some businesses were on their knees because of delays in insurance pay-outs.

The events of that night were condemned as a "brutal terrorist attack" within hours by Prime Minister Theresa May. Yet small, independent businesses in and around the market were left in limbo for weeks as insurance providers were unable to pay out until the attack was officially classified as terrorism by the Treasury on June 28.

At the time, Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle told the News that three businesses feared closure because of the loss of trade.

He added that the government approach to terrorism insurance was “based on an outdated model”, covering attacks targeting infrastructure but not vehicle, knife and cyber-attacks.

Prime Minister Theresa May and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited the market over a month after the attack.

They met with first responders and traders and heard first-hand accounts of how the tragic events unfolded.

Business Minister Margot James also met with traders on a separate occasion and vowed to "call in" insurance providers.

In the hours and days after the attack, tales of heroism and selflessness emerged.

Out of something so dark and tragic came light as details were told of cabbies driving towards danger to

rescue terrified people running from the attack, and Millwall fans fighting off the terrorists to protect others armed with nothing but their bare hands and the bottles and furniture surrounding them.

Gerard Vowls was hailed a hero after pelting the attackers with bottles and glasses.

The 47-year-old is said to have alerted dozens of people to run and hide after witnessing a woman being stabbed.

There were also calls for Lions fan Roy Larner to be awarded the George Cross after he shouted "f*** you, I'm Millwall" before taking on the attackers with his bare hands and hurling stools a them.

SEPTEMBER: The mother of Mohamed Dura-Ray vowed she would keep trying to find out who stabbed her son to death in Walworth after hearing about his final moments during an inquest almost two years later.

Earlier in the year, Lewisham performed a U-turn on plans to compulsory purchase land used by Millwall to sell to developer Renewal for its New Bermondsey scheme.

The brewery and pub owner issued guidance to its landlords asking them to help prevent the use of bad language. The Angel’s landlord Peter O’Sullivan told the News: “If any of my customers take it too far with swearing I will kick them out. But I told Sam Smith’s I’d rather not put up a sign. I’d rather speak to customers about it myself.”

BUS STOP DASH

MARCH: A great-grandmother and her friends were left struggling to catch their regular bus after the shelter was moved 20 feet away from the actual stop.

Lil Hosier, 72, often catches the number 78 from a bus stop on Dunton Road, near Willow Walk, in Bermondsey, to go shopping with friends. But the pensioner said buses hurtled past before she even had time to get to her feet, after the shelter was moved 20 feet away from the stop.

DINOS RETURN

MARCH: Commuters and tourists were stopped in their tracks as dinosaurs sauntered across Southwark Bridge.

Many bemused witnesses took to Twitter to warn others of the odd sight after the giant reptiles were spotted on the bridge one afternoon.

Tatjana Mitevska joked: “Return of the ice age on the eve of #Brexit - #dinosaurs crossing #Southwark Bridge on a headhunting trip to the City of #London.”

Snap election: three MPs hold on to seats

JUNE: Southwark’s three MPs managed to hold on to their seats in the June snap General Election – which came just days after the devastating Borough Market terror attack.

Former Liberal Democrat MP Sir Simon Hughes failed to win back his old Bermondsey and Old Southwark seat of 32 years from Labour’s Neil Coyle.

Mr Coyle said he was “chuffed to bits” with his majority, which increased to 12,972 last year, from 4,489 in 2015.

Harriet Harman turned up at the council’s Tooley Street offices just

shortly before the results were announced to find she had secured a huge majority of 37,316 in Camberwell and Peckham.

Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes also retained her seat with a majority of 28,153.

The clean sweep of the borough’s three seats came as Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn defied critics to gain seats across the country.

The UK woke to the news that the election had ended in a hung parliament – as well as calls for Theresa May to step aside as Prime Minister.

DECEMBER: Helen Hayes and Harriet Harman both hit out at the Government after Lord Bob Kerslake resigned as chair of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust just a day before it was placed into special measures for finance.

The Southwark MPs accused the Government of “scapegoating” the outgoing chair – and blamed the trust’s struggles on an historic lack of funding.

According to regulator NHS Improvement (NHSI), King’s reforecast an end-year deficit of £92 million in December.

However, Lord Kerslake said the “underlying annual deficit was in excess of £140m” when he became chair in April 2015.

And he added that the trust had made savings of £80m each year over the last two years.

NHSI said the financial situation of the trust had “deteriorated very seriously over recent months”.

But both Lord Kerslake, who was chair for just two years, and the MPs blamed the trust’s issues, in part, on a merger which saw it take on the struggling Princess Royal University (PRU) and Orpington hospitals.

Dulwich and West Norwood MP Hayes said the Government needed to carry out a “complete review” of the trust’s funding.

“I think that the root of the financial crisis in King’s goes all the way back to 2013 when King’s took on the two additional hospitals – both of which had major problems – and it became apparent that the funding the Government had allocated for the merger wasn’t enough,” she said.

Camberwell and Peckham MP Harman told the News: “You do not improve an organisation by cutting it to the bone”.

“I think the problem under Bob Kerslake was not the leadership, it was the money and therefore you have the instability of the change of leadership without solving the underlying problem which is the lack of money,” she said.

JANUARY: Much-loved East Dulwich businessman Lawrence James White tragically died after a fall from his hotel balcony in Belgium.

The 52-year-old owner and founder of luxury fragrance shop Roullier White had been on a business trip in Antwerp when the accident happened in January.

Lawrence started his professional life working in product development for big names, including the Royal Academy of Arts, the Millennium Dome and Harvey Nichols, before using his experience to found his own business.

The 69-year-old had served as a councillor for the former Liddle ward in Peckham between 1982 and 1998, and the Cathedrals ward in SE1 between 2002 and 2010.

The retired electrician from Bermondsey was Mayor of Southwark for the year 1991-92, and then again from1994-95.

He died in hospital and was known to have battled with bowel disease, colitis and diverticulitis during his lifetime.

Fatal blaze leads to safety checks

IN THE early hours of June 14, a fire broke out in a fourth-floor flat at Grenfell Tower, in north Kensington.

The blaze quickly spread to the external cladding of the housing block, engulfing the 24-storey building in flames.

Police revealed in November that 71 people, including a stillborn baby, died in the fire.

The tragedy led to combustibility tests being carried out on the cladding of buildings across the country after external cladding was identified as a potential factor in the rapid spread of the fire.

Southwark Council carried out checks on all of its 174 high-rise residential blocks, as well as low-rise blocks and school and hospital buildings.

They also sought reassurance from owners of non-council buildings that the properties were fire safe.

The decision was made to remove cladding from Guy's Hospital cancer centre after it failed fire safety checks, however cladding on the hospital's high-rise buildings was found to be safe.

Cladding on a King’s College Hospital building, used for administrative purposes, also tested positive for combustibility.

Notting Hill Housing's Grange Walk development, in Bermondsey, was also found to have cladding that failed fire safety tests, as did Hyde Housing Group's high-rise Bolanachi Building, also in Bermondsey.

Tests carried out on cladding panels from low-rise block Medina House, in Peckham Rye, revealed it would withstand a “single-flame heat source” – but would rapidly ignite or spread if exposed to “intense radiant heat”.

The gas supply was switched off on the tower blocks of Peckham’s Ledbury Estate after residents raised fears over large cracks in their walls in June. Fire safety wardens were also posted on landings, as surveyors investigated. Building surveyors Arup found in August that the towers could have collapsed if a kitchen gas explosion had happened at any point since they were built (between 1967-70) because they had never received essential strengthening works.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, deputy council leader and cabinet member for housing, said the council could be landed with a £100million bill if sprinklers were recommended for all of its housing.

However, the borough’s housing chief said she had “no qualms” in forking out the huge sum to keep residents safe, after a fire safety expert was called in to carry out a review of Southwark’s housing stock.

A public inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire opened in September, led by retired Court of Appeal judge Sir Martin Moore-Bick.

As 2017 drew to a close, it looked as though plans to seize land used by Millwall FC for its community trust, youth academy, café and car park were back on the cards.

The Court Lane resident, who volunteered at the Dulwich Picture Gallery’s education department for 20 years, was known for the murals and artworks painted on houses, pubs and blocks around East Dulwich and Peckham Rye, which formed part of her Outdoor Gallery programme.

She is survived by her husband Tom Beazley, two daughters and two grandchildren.

Lylie was born and raised in Walworth on the now non-existent Eltham Street in a house with eight siblings.

She married twice, but had no children, which her grandniece Ashley Richards said was how she lived so long.

Lylie also stayed in the area during WWII to volunteer as a fire spotter, and had three uncles who fought in WWI.

The Lions spent much of 2016 and 2017 fighting off the threat of Lewisham Council compulsory purchasing the land to sell to developer Renewal for its New Bermondsey regeneration scheme.

Renewal’s plans for the site included building 2,400 homes and Energize, a sports centre, next to the stadium.

There were therefore huge sighs of relief among the Millwall community when Lewisham performed a U-turn on plans to CPO the land last year. Lewisham Council pledged to arrange an independent external inquiry.

And Councillor Damien Egan, who is in the running to replace Sir Steve Bullock as Lewisham’s mayor in May’s local elections, confirmed he would not support a fresh CPO or the sale of the freeholds of the Millwall land.

However the inquiry, led by former Master of the Rolls and Supreme Court judge Lord John Dyson, found both Lewisham Council and SCSF had committed no wrongdoing.

Months earlier, the Charity Commission had too rejected any allegations against the foundation and a tribunal also rejected allegations of wrongdoing against Lewisham Council.

Having scrapped the original CPO plans, Lewisham would now have to pursue a fresh CPO in order to sell the land to Renewal.

In December, Millwall chairman John Berylson confirmed the club had begun looking at alternative sites for the club to move to, in the event Lewisham attempted to seize the land once again.

In Jen Silverman’s Collective Rage: A Play in Five Betties, the lives of five very different New York women named Betty collide at the intersection of anger, sex and “theat-ah”. As they meet, fall in love, rehearse, revel and rage, they realise that they’ve been stuck reading the same scripts for far too long, writes Michael Holland...

The press release says that ‘with an electrifying soundtrack, looks to kill and spectacular routines, this outrageous comedy packs the punch to shatter lacquered femininity into a thousand glittering pieces. Strongly influenced by cabaret and female drag, this exquisite rejection of shame and stereotype will punch you in the gut, break your heart and then take you dancing’. But what did the director think?

Charlie Parham is half of Antic Face, a company whose mission statement seems mainly to redress the gender imbalance in the industry. He was first touched by theatre while studying GCSE drama when ‘the different elements of the course helped me appreciate how great storytelling both involves imaginative experimentation, but also demands a structured sense of communication’.

Later, at university he says he learnt a lot from making mistakes directing amateur theatre ‘in the safety of a student bubble’, and emphasises his gratitude for the directors who he assisted and shadowed after graduation - ‘Watching them work taught me

invaluable lessons about theatre as a profession.’

These days Charlie is influenced more by playwrights than directors ‘reworking classic texts in bold ways’.

And he is still motivated and kept positive by the artistic relationships he built up while getting his theatre education. He says of his Antic Face

partner, Emma Hall, who he met at university: ‘We acted together, directed each other and, ultimately, kept each other excited about theatre as we continue to do today.’

All this gives us an insight to why the director was drawn to Collective Rage: A Play in Five Betties. This all-female, queer and original piece is something

‘everyone can relate to… The extraordinary Jen Silverman helps us discover the power of that language.

The identity politics are there, but it’s never didactic because the characters are real, sympathetic people with heartbreaking and hilarious stories to tell.’

Charlie adds that it is ‘a fast and furious ride’ and invites us all to buy a

ticket and get on board.

It’s trim up north - Exhibition looks at northern fashion

North: Fashioning Identity, is an exhibition examining representations of the north of England and Northerners in photography, fashion and art.

Contemporary photography and artworks are placed alongside representations of the north from the 20th century to show how the old still influences the new, writes Michael Holland...

With a timeline beginning in the 1930s the exhibition takes us on a journey right up to the present day.

Surprisingly, even though there is a bias towards Liverpool and Manchester in this show there is no Georgie Best or Beatles included.

Sean Ryder gets his own painted timeline wall from 19th century cotton weaver ancestors to his aircraft fitter father, a pair of Ian Brown Adidas were displayed, as well as the Stone Roses’ first photo shoot being revisited.

The fashion of the rave scene is shown in all its standing-in-a-field glory, as is the Hacienda days of Madchester.

FISHER MADE it eight league wins on the bounce as they closed the gap to third-place Punjab United to four points with a 3-1 win at Meridian VP last Saturday.

Dean Harrison’s side were two goals to the good by the break, thanks to strikes from Mathieu Ramsamy and Toyeeb Babatunde, before midfield Ritchie Hamill made it 3-0 from the spot in the 58th minute.

Stanley Ugwoke pulled one back for Meridian with three minutes left but it wasn’t enough to spoil the party as Fisher ended a difficult 2017 on a high.

Their promotion bid is well on track, and they have a game in hand on Punjab in the SCEFL First Division table. A tilt at the title is also not out of the question.

K Sports top the table on 50 points, nine ahead of the Bermondsey outfit, who have three games in hand.

REISE ALLASSANI picked up this year where he left off in 2017 by firing a hat-trick as Dulwich Hamlet returned to the top of the Bostick League Premier Division table on New Year’s Day.

Allassani’s three goals took him to sixteen for the season as Gavin Rose’s side routed Kingstonian.

After their scheduled top-of-thetable clash against Billericay Town was postponed on December 30, Hamlet put the disappointment behind them, with Allassani leading the way after what he admitted had been the “hardest year” of his life.

Lionesses back in league action

MILLWALL LIONESSES will be aiming to keep up their unbeaten league run when they face Sheffield FC Ladies this weekend.

The Lionesses have won four and drawn one of their FA Women’s Super League 2 games, though sit in third in the league on thirteen points after having three points deducted for fielding an ineligible player.

The match against Sheffield will kick off at 2pm on Sunday in St Paul’s.

Yiadom also got on the scoresheet to boost their goal difference.

It was the perfect start to the year for Allassani, the former Crystal Palace player who recovered from a knee ligament injury last season. He wrote on Twitter late last month that “2017 has been the hardest and most defining year of my life.

He added: “Recovering from my ACL injury was challenging yet in the end very rewarding as I pushed my body to limits I’d never pushed it to before and also learnt more about myself than I never knew before.

“Also, to be able to play football again and enjoy it more than ever is a blessing.

“Thanks to everyone that’s supported me this year.”

Allassani will be hoping to keep up his rich rate of scoring form when Hamlet face Folkestone Invicta in the league at Champion Hill on Saturday. Kick-off is 3pm.

Hamlet are three points clear of Billericay, who have five games in hand.

Harrison had the luxury of bringing on Lee Friend for his debut, as well as Connor Westney following his recovery from injury, and giving Babatunde and Ramsamy a rest.

Meridian pulled a goal back when Ugwoke finished well after a defensive mix-up.

It was Fisher who had the late chances to make it four, but Meridian survived a scramble in their box as Dan Flemming almost hooked the ball home.

Fisher face Erith & Belvedere in their next league game as they seek to keep the pressure on the top two. The match will kick off on Saturday at St Paul’s at 3pm.

Hamlet head for Hamburg

DULWICH HAMLET have added another fixture to their glamour tour in Hamburg next summer.

The German tour is part of Dulwich’s 125-year history celebrations, and they will face regional side Altona 93, who were also founded in 1893.

The clubs struck up a relationship four years ago when a Hamlet supporter was at the Hamburg club’s ground and met an Altona fan, before a friendly was arranged in London.

Next summer’s trip is being funded after a three-year initiative

by Hamlet fans.

Hamlet will also face Bezirksliga Nord side HFC Falke, from the seventh tier of German football.

Gavin Rose’s side will be the firstever international opponents for the German club, who were founded in 2014.

The fixtures will take place on July 13 and 15.

Cheeseman lands former Brook foe

TED CHEESEMAN believes it is the right time to make a step up in class after it was announced he will fight former USBA welterweight champion Carson Jones in February.

Bermondsey’s Cheeseman, 22, will put his record on the line against 31-year-old American Jones, who went twelve rounds with former IBF welterweight title holder Kell Brook in 2012.

The vastly experienced Jones is 40-12-3 and Cheeseman believes a

win will boost his profile.

“It’s a really good fight for me,” Cheeseam said. “As long as I come through it and win, and obviously I think I will, it’s going to raise my profile a lot and put me into some massive fights towards the summertime.

“I’m 100 per cent confident.

Obviously he’s a big name and I can’t underestimate him, but his time has been and my time is now. I feel I’m ready to take these sort of fights, and he’s the sort of opponent I need to get through to show what level I’m really at.

“He’s always got a big engine, but

I need to make sure I’m really fit.”

English super-welterweight title holder Cheeseman was hoping for a British title fight, but he believes that is still on the cards.

“I can get a British title shot later in the year,” he said. “Right now this is the kind of fight that I need.

I’ve been talking about getting a British title fight since I got the English title shot. But politics has happened and it’s not on.

“I was really up for the fight with [James] Metcalfe. He’s 17-0, I’m 12-0, it would have been a great fight for us. It would be a big domestic fight.”

Neil Harris didn’t mince his words after seeing Millwall lose their first game of 2018. If his players had thought they had built up a bit of credit after their December form, this defeat emptied the account.

Harris felt his players had “dropped their standards” and it was the first time he had angrily publicly rebuked his players since the 4-3 defeat at home to Ipswich in August.

It was a pity that the headlines after this game didn’t belong to Steve Morison, who scored his second goal in two games and arguably the best since he re-joined the club in 2015.

Morison is always looking for opportunities to catch goalkeepers by surprise, and has gone close to scoring from distance goals a number of times.

He spectacularly found his range on Monday when he fired a loose ball from 30 yards looping over Angus Gunn.

It seemed to come at the best possible time, too, just before the break with the Norwich crowd getting on the backs of their players after Millwall had contained them following a good early period for the hosts.

Morison, 34, has played a lot recently and could have done with a rest in the second half. But with Tom Elliott out with a muscle injury the striker had to carry on and wasn’t as influential as he had been in the first half. Games like this show why Millwall need to add to their attacking options, and Harris sounded frustrated afterwards that Elliott has picked up a number of injuries this season that have prevented him from putting a run of games together.

Harris had rested Jed Wallace and Aiden O’Brien, with Ryan Tunnicliffe starting in an unfamiliar role on the left of midfield. With Shane Ferguson out injured, and O’Brien not scoring at the same rate as the last two seasons, Harris will surely look to add a leftsided attacking player.

That position may have to wait for the summer, though, with another centreback the priority.

The Lions still have the fifth-best away defensive record in the division, but an injury to Shaun Hutchinson or Jake Cooper would leave them exposed.

On Monday, the fact that Millwall conceded from a set-piece angered Harris. Tom Trybull, not the tallest player in the box, was allowed to meet James Maddison’s delivery to nod past Jordan Archer just seven minutes into the second half.

Norwich were buoyed and Josh Murphy hit the crossbar before the home side got through again. Millwall had struggled to deal with Norwich’s attacking trio behind striker Nelson Oliveira. Two of them combined with thirteen minutes left, as Alex Pritchard cleverly put Maddison through with a reverse pass, and he finished low past Archer into the far corner.

Harris didn’t hold back afterwards.

“I’m fuming, raging with my players,” Harris said. “To have weathered a storm after the first 20 minutes, to deny a really good football team so few opportunities inside 20 yards of our goal and get our noses in front with a brilliant strike before halftime, the job is half done.

“To concede two goals in the manner that we did... the second-half performance was a disgrace from my players. I won’t butter it up any other way.

“We didn’t get near enough to the ball. The first goal was abysmal by us, to concede a free header from a freekick from that position is not acceptable.

“I’ve left the players in no uncertain terms what my thoughts are about that second half.

“Anyone who thinks that Millwall had a good December and good Christmas period and that’s good enough is wrong, while I’m in charge.

That’s unacceptable, we need to be better than that.”

“Norwich’s play is based around lovely football, nice patterns, playing between the lines and getting tap-ins from six yards out. If you give away a goal from a set-piece against Norwich you’ve got big problems.

“My players have been brilliant for me over the course of the season and over the course of the last few games.

They have been outstanding.

“But I won’t let players drop their standards and that’s what they did in the second half.”

Millwall struggled to create clear openings as they chased an equaliser, their best chance falling to O’Brien but he couldn’t find his range.

It was just Norwich’s fourth win in thirteen games at home, while Millwall still haven’t tasted victory on the road in the Championship since February 2015 when they beat Birmingham 1-0.

They will have to wait until January 20 for their next chance, when they don’t come much bigger than Leeds United away.

Burton’s win at Sheffield Wednesday means there is an uncomfortable gap between the Lions and the relegation zone of six points.

Millwall need to get their January recruitment right and add the quality that could help them climb further away from danger.

FA Cup third Round preview

NEIL HARRIS has warned his players they must be “on their toes” as he aims to add at least two players to his squad this month.

Harris was furious with how his side let Norwich back into the game last Monday as the Lions left Carrow Road without a point after a 2-1 defeat.

The Millwall boss has made no secret that the FA Cup is not the priority this season, and he could opt to give players such as Kris Twardek, David Martin and Ben Thompson starts against Barnsley at The Den on Saturday.

Tykes boss Paul Heckingbottom could also leave out several first-team regulars. Both sides are in the bottom half of the table after 26 games, and both could be fighting a relegation battle in the second half of the season.

Millwall can’t afford to lose any more players to injury. James Meredith, Shaun Hutchinson and George Saville have played in every league game this season, and Harris could give them a rest ahead of the next league game at home to Preston.

Saville has played 31 times this season including internationals.

Alternatively, Harris may decide to give those who featured at Norwich the chance to redeem themselves.

Harris was asked if it would be difficult to lift his players after Monday’s loss and he responded: “Lift my players? No, I left them in no uncertain terms what my thoughts were about the second-half performance.

“It’s not the most glamourous tie, Barnsley at home, for me or Paul.

We’d both much rather focus on the league. However, it’s an opportunity for people to perform better than they did [Monday].

“We’ll reflect on that game. You give people an opportunity and you expect them to stake a claim for the next game, some players didn’t do that.

Certainly the subs that came on were non-existent.”

WHAT HAVE we got to look forward to in 2018? Well, we’ve got a few big days planned over the coming months, the first being the memorial game against Cardiff City which the club will be releasing more details around during the next few weeks.

There is a specific reason why our first-ever Memorial Day is happening in 2018. Forty years ago this year, on February 11, 1978, close friends Al Smith, Bob Bonds, Bill Ward, Rodney Phillips, Stephen Medcraft, Stephen King, John Webb and Steven Bayes all died in a crash on their way to watch Millwall away at Southampton.

Elsewhere, the Millwall Supporters Club continues its redevelopment.

Three new members have come forward and,

as agreed when the old committee members resigned, I will now take a step back as there is a new committee. It is now the job of the new committee to move itself forward and to consult with the fans about their vision for the new MSC. I’m excited to tell you all that I am planning a charity football match for Sunday May 27 at The Den between a London XI and a Manchester XI. Details are going to be released in the next few weeks in an interview with Southwark News.

The purpose of the game is to show that football can bring people together and we can raise money that will be split 50/50 between the victims of terrorism in the UK and an emergency services charity.

I have to say a massive ‘thank you’ to Millwall for giving me The Den for free for that day in what will

hopefully be the start of an annual event.

In other news, the Millwall Lionesses are looking to carry their fine League form into 2018. They haven’t lost in Women’s Super League 2 since February 2017 against Sunday’s opponents Sheffield Ladies. The Lionesses have turned it around completely under manager Lee Burch and have recorded some memorable wins, including a 2-1 victory over Everton and against Doncaster Belles.

They finished third in the Spring Series and currently sit third going into 2018. With young talent such as Ella Rutherford and Charlie Devlin, Burch has certainly built a squad for future success and there’s nothing getting in their way of winning the title this season.

SID NELSON is unlikely to have his loan deal extended at League Two Yeovil Town.

Nelson, 22, joined Yeovil on a deal until January, but his last appearance for Darren Way’s side was on November 21, when he was sent off against Notts County.

The centre-back was a regular until he broke his nose and required an operation.

He played fourteen times for the Glovers, but is back at Millwall.

Nelson’s opportunities with the Lions are limited, with Neil Harris set to add another defender to his squad in January.

That means another loan deal is likely for Nelson.

“We've had a good run of games, and unfortunately I can only pick eleven players. It's been a little bit disappointing for him, and a little bit disappointing for Keston, but we'll make sure we make the right decisions for themselves and for both parties."

Meanwhile, Millwall and Carlisle are set to agree an extension to James Brown’s loan deal until the end of the season.

Brown, 19, has been a big hit with the League Two side and their manager, Keith Curle. He has made 22 appearances for Carlisle and nailed down the firstchoice rightback slot.

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris has insisted the club will only sign players on his terms as he explained the need to add a defender and attacker to the squad during January.

Millwall’s 2-1 defeat at Norwich on New Year’s Day reinforced the need to strengthen the squad. Steve Morison, 34, played a second 90 minutes in four days as Harris couldn’t rest him with Tom Elliott out injured.

Harris revealed before the start of the season the Lions had been offered a young Premier League

player on loan but didn’t proceed with any move as his parent club wanted a guarantee of first-team football.

Harris is hopeful of signing the players that can improve his squad, after success in previous windows with loan deals including Jed Wallace and Jake Cooper.

“We have to run a tight ship, that’s where we’re at. I fully appreciate that. We want to build in small steps,” Harris said.

“I’ve been quite honest in my assessment that we’re probably looking at bringing a couple of loan players in.

“When you get to a position like we are when the chairman is saying you can bring a couple in, that’s

brilliant. But then you have a couple lined up and suddenly they’re back in their own team, so you can’t get them and feel like you’re a million miles away.

“It’s the same for all managers at the minute. If anyone’s doing really well they’re not available, if anyone’s injured obviously we’re not going to take them, and if anyone’s available because they’re not playing somewhere, then why not?

“It’s a sellers’ market in January.

It’s about getting the right players.

I’ve always been very clear in my philosophy that I will only sign players if it is on my terms and the club’s terms, not on other people’s.

“So taking players on loan will be

on my terms only. Players will have to come in and compete for places because we’ve got a really top spirit in the camp. We have to get the right ones in.

“We’re certainly looking for defensive cover and we need more quality going forward. We feel we’ve got a really good standard in the group at the moment and we need to make sure we add more quality.”

The insistence that Millwall will only recruit on loan this month would seem to rule out a move for Fleetwood striker Devante Cole.

The League One side would likely only allow their player to leave permanently as they would want a fee to reinvest in their squad.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper has been frustrated with his lack of chances this season and has been kept out of the match-day squad by David Martin.

Martin joined the Lions on September 1 after he left MK Dons, and signed a deal until the end of the season last month.

First-choice stopper Jordan Archer has played in 25 of Millwall’s 26 league games this season, and when he was ill for the December clash with Aston Villa it was Martin who deputised and kept a clean sheet.

King will feel he is at the age when he needs regular first-team football.

He has played just twice this season, both in the EFL Cup when manager Neil Harris rested a number of players.

King made seventeen appearances last season and impressed as he kept six clean sheets. But the last time he featured in a league game was last April, a 1-0 defeat to Fleetwood.

He has had spells on loan at Welling and Braintree in the National League, but Millwall wanted to secure him a Football League club to help his development.

King turns 23 in March, and he will be aware that under-23 football won’t help his progress.

League Two Forest Green are currently struggling in 22nd place in the table.
