A NUNHEAD school has been left “devastated” by the double murder of a member of staff and her father.

Ivydale Primary School has paid tribute to Marie Brown, 41, who was found dead with her dad Noel Brown, 69, at his home in Deptford The mother was described as a “valued member of our team” by headteacher Helen Ingham.

“We were devastated to hear the news that Marie Brown and her father have died,” said the school leader.

ABORTION ‘BUFFER ZONE’ NECESSARY

I

T IS right that Southwark councillors have voted unanimously to look at setting up a ‘buffer zone’ outside the Blackfriars Medical Practice, where an abortion clinic is based.

As Lib Dem Cllr David Noakes, who proposed the motion, pointed out, it’s been fifty years since the law was changed to give women the right to a legal and safe abortion. Half a century on, it is still a contentious and emotive issue, as all matters of life and death are. People will disagree, and have the right to do so.

What shouldn’t be allowed is the harassment and intimidation of women who have had to make such a difficult decision about their bodies. If anti-abortion campaigners want to make their point, they should do so to government, rather than to those who decided to follow a painful, but entirely legal path.

SENSIBLE DECISION

ATS OFF to James Gore, the manager of Morrison’s in Rye Lane, Peckham, for having the brains and courage to remove knives from sale in his store.

Mr. Gore decided to remove the entire range of knives in a bid to stop teenagers from stealing them. Attempts to tag them, or to challenge kids over their ages weren’t successful, so he made the commonsense decision to remove the lot.

You can argue that such actions paint a worse picture of an area than is warranted, that it’s pandering to criminality, or that the teenagers stealing the knives will just go elsewhere.

Some years back, this paper, along with Southwark Council, campaigned to prevent the illegal sale of knives to young people, and for the closer monitoring of the sale of knives.

Continued education of young people about the scourge of knife crime is also necessary.

But until or unless it’s illegal for bladed items to be sold in unlocked displays, what else can Mr. Gore, or any retailer do to prevent them being stolen, potentially with catastrophic results?

Man who makes singing videos with his dad to help his dementia wins award for his fundraising

A SON who makes car karaoke videos with his dad to help his dementia has won an award.

Simon McDermott, 41, and his 81year-old dad Teddy became internet sensations after uploading a video to YouTube of them singing in the car.

The pair managed to raise £150,000 and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Society over the past year through their videos.

And Simon, from Borough, scooped Individual Fundraiser of the Year at the National Dementia Friendly Awards last Wednesday, November 29, for his efforts.

He was one of three finalists hoping to win the award, which recognises inspiring individuals who have demonstrated a positive impact on the lives of those coping with dementia.

Speaking after the awards ceremony, hosted by Alzheimer’s Society ambassador Angela Rippon CBE at London County Hall, Simon said: “Me and dad didn’t expect this.

We just wanted to make a difference, as we know what it is like to be affected by dementia and we want to give something back to Alzheimer’s Society.

“The Alzheimer’s Society helpline was really helpful – if it wasn’t there, I’m not sure what I would have done.”

Sixty-year-old on murder charge

DULWICH: A man appeared in court charged with the murder of a 60-year-old who died after being stabbed in Dulwich.

Steven Thwaites, 61, of Marmora Road, appeared at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court on Monday, December 4, after being charged with murder on Saturday.

He did not enter a plea and was set to appear at the Old Bailey yesterday, Wednesday, as the News went to press.

Police were called to Marmora Road, Dulwich at about 2.35am on Friday, December 1, following reports of a stabbing. Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended and found a 60-year-old man with serious injuries. He died at the scene a short time later.

His next of kin have been informed.

Detectives from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command are investigating.

Police appeal after alleged attack

BERMONDSEY: A man in his 20s was taken to hospital with “possible life-threatening injuries” following an assault.

Police were called to reports of an assault in Southwark Park Road, Bermondsey at 7.53pm on Saturday, December 2.

London Ambulance Service also attended and found the man, aged in 20s, injured. He was taken to a south London hospital with possible lifethreatening injuries. He remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A 23-year-old man was arrested near the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and assault on a police officer. He was taken to a south London police station. He has been bailed to return on a date in late December.

Police inquiries continue.

Redriff Primary School, in Salter Road, was ranked as the top-performing primary school in England for reading in this year’s Renaissance Awards.

The awards honour the best performing schools from across the country in terms of their implementation of best practices for reading and student growth in reading attainment – as measured by Renaissance Star Reading and Renaissance Accelerated Reader (AR). In the UK, the AR tool supports over 1.4million students to become independent readers.

Under AR, students read a book, take a quiz, and get immediate feedback.

Star Reading is aligned to the national curriculum and features highly adaptive software that means its tests cannot be taught and it is in use in over 5,500 schools.

A NUNHEAD school has been left “devastated” by the double murder of a member of staff and her father.

“We were devastated to hear the news that Marie Brown and her father have died,” said the school leader.

“This is a very difficult time for the Ivydale community. We are in touch with her family and have offered our sincere condolences, and ongoing support.

“I have written to all parents, and we are speaking to pupils today to let them know.

“We have staff in school who are trained to offer bereavement support and Southwark Council has also offered its support to those affected by this terrible incident.”

A murder investigation was launched after officers discovered the bodies of Ms Brown and her

father at his home in New Butt Lane, Deptford, at 2.45am on Monday.

Police were responding to concerns for the welfare of Mr Brown, who was last seen on November 30.

He is said to have been well known in the area and to have frequented betting shops.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Harding, leading the investigation, said: “I am asking the public to assist police by providing information relating to those coming and going from the New Butt Lane address.

“Noel Brown had a significant routine and at this stage it appears that he was not seen after Thursday, November 30.

“I would like to hear from anyone who either saw Noel in the week leading up to his death, or who has information concerning anyone who visited him at home.

“Similarly, anyone who can provide information concerning the movements of Marie Brown is asked to call our incident room.

“No matter how insignificant or small a detail it may seem, any information will assist my team in piecing together the events leading up to this tragic incident.”

Street named after hero soldier Lee to be opened this weekend WALWORTH

A NEW street named after a Walworth-born soldier fatally shot in Iraq will be officially opened this weekend.

Private Lee O’Callaghan was only 20-years-old when he was killed in the city of Basra on August 9, 2004, while serving in the Army.

Lee, who served in the 1st Battalion the Princess of Wales Regiment, was the 62nd British soldier to be killed in the Iraq war and the fourteenth to die after the war was declared over.

The Millwall fan had been on duty for five months, with just one week left before he was due to fly home on leave

and be reunited with his family.

To remember the fallen soldier, a street in the Elephant Park development has been named O’Callaghan Way. Lee’s name was put forward with more than 130 suggestions to name new streets and blocks in the borough over the next fifteen years.

The street, which will link Heygate Street with Wansey Street, is located around the corner from where Lee’s younger brother Danny and mum Shirley both work at the Walworth branch of F A Albin & Sons funeral directors.

Shirley will officially open the street by cutting the ribbon this Saturday, December 9, in what will be an

emotional moment for the young soldier’s family.

Southwark votes to set up perimeter and will now ‘consider next steps’

SOUTHWARK IS one step closer to introducing a ‘buffer zone’ outside an abortion clinic to stop pro-life campaigners “intimidating or harassing” women.

The council has voted unanimously to explore options to set up a perimeter around the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) abortion clinic at Blackfriars Medical Practice, in Colombo Street.

If given the go ahead, Southwark would become the third local authority in the country to introduce such measures, following in the footsteps of Ealing and Portsmouth councils.

Anti-abortion protesters are said to have campaigned outside the Blackfriars clinic for at least three years, and to have had “emotional and distressing images” and “body cameras” capturing those going into and out of the building.

Cathedrals ward Liberal Democrat Councillor David Noakes proposed a cross-party motion to investigate installing a buffer zone outside the clinic at a council assembly meeting last Wednesday, November 29.

Cllr Noakes said women “have the right to access a legal and safe abortion without feeling intimidated and harassed”. “It’s been 50 years since the Liberal MP David Steel changed the law to give women the right to a legal and safe abortion,” he said.

“Some people disagree with that, and they have the right to campaign and lobby for a change in the law.”

Cllr Barrie Hargrove, Southwark

Council’s cabinet member for communities, safety and leisure, said the motion was “not about the arguments for or against abortion, but rather about a woman’s legal right to go to a clinic without intimidation or harassment”.

“The council will work together with BPAS, other interested local authorities, clinics, residents and the other necessary organisations to consider next steps,” he added.

BPAS Southwark’s treatment unit manager said they were “delighted”.

“The women who attend our clinics do so for a huge variety of reasons, and each individual woman deserves to have the right to access reproductive healthcare without being confronted by the views of others,” said the unit manager.

“Some women are accessing our services in the midst of unimaginably difficult circumstances, and for some vulnerable women anonymity is really important.

“Protesters make this more difficult and the presence of protesters can be unnerving for both clients and staff. It can be intimidating and upsetting for people (women, their families/friends) who are often already working through a difficult period in their life.”

The News previously reported on Neil Coyle MP’s calls for Southwark to follow suit after Ealing council voted in favour of a motion to stop anti-abortion groups protesting outside Marie Stopes clinic.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark Labour MP said he was “very keen to see a Southwark equivalent of the Ealing proposal” but that he would “like it to be fairly stronger”.

A MOTHER-of-three with type 1 diabetes is appealing for a new kidney as she fears she could die if she cannot find the right donor.

Carly Anderson, who grew up in Rotherhithe, has been told both of her kidneys have failed and one of them needs to be replaced.

The 36-year-old was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was thirteen and has since suffered from illness during her three pregnancies – and even had a massive heart attack.

She is now appealing for people to get tested to see if they could be a kidney donor, as it would “make her Christmas”.

Speaking to the News, she said: “When I was thirteen I had this headache that just wouldn’t go away.

So my mum took me to the hospital and they told her I had flu, but as I went to get off the bed I collapsed and they told her I had type 1 diabetes and I spent about a month in hospital.

“I got really ill after having my first child, Ellie, and then in 2005 I had a

massive heart attack and my last two pregnancies were really bad.

“I was okay for a little while but one night I sat up in bed and couldn’t breathe. The next morning the doctor said ‘I think you’ve got something wrong with your heart’ so I was bluelighted to the hospital and was in resus for seven weeks.

“They said all my tubes were blocked in my heart. They did an angioplasty, so I’ve got quite a few stents in each side of my heart.”

Carly’s maternal grandmother Sylvia Wanless, 81, who still lives in Rotherhithe, said the heart operation gave her granddaughter a “new lease of life” – but that she’s “not quite so good again”.

“I went to the kidney clinic two weeks ago and they said my kidneys were at eighteen per cent,” said Carly, who lives in Greenwich with her daughters Ellie, fourteen, Jessica, five, and Billie, four, and fiancé Ryan, 32.

A SUPERMARKET boss has stopped selling knives in a Peckham store because they were being swiped by schoolchildren “multiple times a week”.

Manager James Gore made the decision to remove the entire range of knives in the Rye Lane Morrison’s superstore to stop teenagers from stealing them.

The 27-year-old, who moved to the store last summer, said it was a “common sense” move to stop a child from taking a knife into school.

“We had a full range of knives out but often found they were getting stolen, especially by school kids first thing in the morning as soon as we opened,” he told the News.

“When you come in and see what’s happening you’ve got a choice: you can remove the knives from sale, you can tag them, but that won’t stop the theft, and you can have challenge 25, but that doesn’t make much difference with theft.

“Obviously it wasn’t a great scene of what potentially could happen with those knives, so I made the decision to remove the entire range and that was not long after being here.

“Police and our head office were informed, but because of the relatively low value of the products there’s very little you can do without substantial information – however the impact of the knives being stolen was far greater.

“Hopefully if it stops one child taking a knife to school then I think it’s a positive thing.”

Mr Gore said the store had replaced the range of knives with other home and leisure products and that customers were usually understanding of the decision.

“Feedback has been positive,” he said. “When someone comes into the shop looking for cutlery and steak knives it’s a problem, but when you articulate why that is and what we are trying to achieve, the people in this area do understand.

“We no longer see the sort of single typical teenaged boys in the morning up and down our home and leisure aisle because what they are after can’t be found in our store anymore.”

Council submits bid for Borough of Culture

SOUTHWARK HAS submitted its bid to Mayor Sadiq Khan to become London Borough of Culture, and receive over £1m in arts funding.

The bid was supported by actor Mark Rylance, comedian Jenny Eclair, Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe, Southwark’s business forum and backed by 4,000 more.

The bid, in which councils across the capital are competing, ended with a celebration which saw a five metre high Father Thames leading a lantern parade.

Together with South London Samba he guided an audience from Lancaster Estate Gardens to Mint Street Park, where there was a fireworks display.

Cllr Johnson Situ, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Business, Culture and Social Regeneration, said: “The focus of our bid is on working in the heart of our communities, in the estates, parks and on the streets to create new works of art and cultural celebrations by and for our residents, friends and visitors.

“But we have the resources, skills, creativity, talent and partnerships in place to deliver a spectacular showcase, not just for Southwark, but for the whole of London and beyond.

“As London Borough of Culture, we will support the next generation of Southwark Pioneers so that the legacy and impact of our year will be felt for many decades to come.”

A ROTHERHITHE schoolboy was over the moon after winning a photography competition.

Seven-year-old George’s photograph, which featured him sitting on Tower Bridge, scooped the top spot in a competition run by Surrey Quays shopping centre.

The youngster took part in a six-week workshop at the shopping centre run by Bizzie Bodies, which taught children how to manipulate images using Photoshop.

After seeing the quality of the photos, centre manager Ian Moore decided to run a Facebook competition and asked the community to vote for their favourite image.

Micky Holland also won a prize for his comment nominating George’s photo and they were each given an Amazon Fire tablet donated by the shopping centre.

George said: “I picked Tower Bridge for my photo because I had recently walked on the top of the bridge and I wanted to be really high.

“I wasn’t sure if I would win because all the other photos were really good.”

Surrey Quays operations manager David Skipper, who handed over the prizes, added: “We are delighted that Bizzie Bodies ran their photographic classes in the Surrey Quays centre and there were some fantastic images that

The team based at the station in Lower Road have now moved out of the building and into a purposebuilt base behind Seven Islands leisure centre.

It comes as part of Metropolitan Police cuts which will also see the front counters at Peckham and Southwark stations close to the public next Thursday, December 14, although officers will continue to work in the buildings.

Walworth will be the only police station in the borough to have a front counter which will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The safer neighbourhood bases will also be closed in Southwark with the exception of the base in Seeley Drive, Dulwich, which will be converted into a dedicated ward officer (DWO) hub.

The police will identify new DWO hubs across the borough, with the general rule that officers should begin their shift no more than 20 minutes’ walking time away from their ward.

Inspector Jim Cole of Southwark Police told the News: “The ward teams for Rotherhithe, Surrey Docks, South Bermondsey, and Riverside wards continue to work as before and are based in a new purpose-built base fit for modern policing needs.

“Whilst the old police station has served the community for 52 years

and we are sorry to see it go, time has come to move on.

“The Metropolitan Police continue to need to make savings and streamline the estate.

“The savings made by the sale of buildings such as the old Rotherhithe police station go towards keeping officers on the street and equipped with modern technology, allowing them to spend more time working in the local community.”

Southwark will continue to have two dedicated ward officers (DWOs) and one PCSO for each ward.

DWOs will have new ‘hubs’, or back offices, based in their wards where they can change and pick up items needed before heading out on duty.

They will hold a minimum of a one-hour community contact session per week per ward for those members of the community who prefer face-to-face contact.

Members of the public can report crime in Southwark by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency, through the Met’s website, or at the 24/7 front counter at Walworth police station.

Highest Christmas light show returns

WESTERN EUROPE’S highest light show returned this week, as the Shard put on its festive display.

The top 20 floors of the 95 storey building were lit up on Monday evening, with the display taking

place until January.

The illuminations will show five colours – blue, green , purple, magenta and red – on rotation, from dusk til dawn. Visual effects, like patterns and sparkles, will mark every quarter of an hour.

There will also be a special display as the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve.

A CHRISTMAS carol concert will be held at Southwark Cathedral to raise funds for a dementia charity.

TV Presenter Fiona Phillips will host the Alzheimer’s Society carols concert at the cathedral from 6.30pm on Thursday, December 14.

A Singing for the Brain group from Merton Dementia Hub will perform alongside London’s chamber choir, Vasari Singers.

The evening will also include special readings from a handful of celebrities including Arlene Phillips, Susie Blake and Ben Lamb.

Biscuit family return for unveiling

DESCENDANTS OF Bermondsey biscuit makers Peek Frean & Co watched as a replica of the company’s cake for Queen Elizabeth II’s wedding was officially unveiled.

Skilled workers at the Peek Frean biscuit factory, off Drummond Road, made a six-foot tall cake for the then Princess Elizabeth’s marriage to Prince Philip in 1947.

Staff at the factory are said to have been so proud of their creation that they decided to make a full-scale replica of the cake out of icing sugar.

But vandals broke into Rotherhithe’s Pumphouse Museum two years ago, where the replica was stored once the factory closed, and destroyed it.

Thanks to the Peek Frean Museum’s and British Sugarcraft Guild’s tireless work, another replica was made from scratch and officially unveiled last Thursday, November 30.

Relatives of James Peek and John Carr, who ran the biscuit factory along with George Frean, were in Bermondsey to witness the event as well as members of the Guild and other people involved in the project.

Chris Carr, whose great-greatgrandfather John Carr joined the company after it was founded by Peek

and Frean, shed a tear at the unveiling.

Speaking to the News, the 66-year-old, who worked in the factory between 1970 and 1980, said: “My grandfather was chairman and my dad was managing director and I used to come round as a tot [to look at the cake] and I’m quite touched by it [the replica] because when you are this high [as a child] it’s an impressive cake and the people who made the original cake made my wedding cake.

“It did overwhelm me because of people doing something for the pure love of doing it when there’s no commercial gain and to a standard of perfection, and also whenever I come back to the factory I feel a tad emotional, it’s a lovely project.”

Mr Carr, who started off as a graduate trainee and later became quality control manager, said he had John Carr’s original marriage certificate which was signed by James Peek, who attended the wedding.

Amanda Davies, whose great-greatgrandfather was Francis Peek and greatgreat-great-uncle was James Peek, said she thought the replica was “absolutely wonderful”.

“I hadn’t heard anything about this from my own grandparents, it was only in researching a book that I found out about the cake and visited it at the Pumphouse Museum,” said the 69year-old.

PEEK FREAN biscuits could be back on the shelves in the UK once again after almost 30 years.

The biscuit company Peek Frean & Co was founded by James Peek and George Frean in 1866 and was a huge employer in Bermondsey until it closed its Drummond Road factory in 1989.

Harry Davies, whose great-greatgreat-great-uncle was James Peek, said Peek Frean biscuits were never sold again in Europe, although the name continued to be used in other parts of the world.

The 35-year-old, who owns a deli in Hackney, bought the trademark to the biscuits last year and hopes to begin rolling them out again from 2018.

The business owner plans to have a Peek Frean custard cream, bourbon and one other biscuit back on the shelves in the UK by 2018 – as well as a Christmas selection tin.

Speaking to the News, Mr Davies said “it’s back in the family”.

“Peek Frean ended up being owned by United Biscuits and they shut the factory down in the ‘80s,” he said.

“The name and the trademark were never used again in Europe but it was used in North America, where Kraft owns it, and Pakistan.

“I had been edging into own brand bits and pieces and the one section of the deli which was most lacking and unexciting was the sweet biscuit section.

“I was talking to someone about that and this bit of family history popped into my head and I thought,

A TRIO of men will lace up their trainers and take on a 5k run to help Bermondsey girl Ruby Longman raise money for charity.

A fundraising page has been set up to help raise money and awareness of Rett Syndrome, which has prevented eleven-year-old Ruby from walking and talking since she was a baby.

The rare genetic disorder affects brain development, resulting in severe mental and physical disability.

Ruby’s mum, Timi Samples, said Millwall FC also donated a match ticket and a signed football and shirt

to be auctioned off to raise money for the cause.

“Ruby has regressed into stage three of Rett Syndrome and is on oxygen 24 hours a day,” said the 51-year-old.

“But she is a lot better than she has been; she is slowly putting on a bit of weight and getting a bit of her character back.”

POP STAR Ronan Keating helped put the finishing touches to a Christmas tree made entirely from Lego at Evelina London Children’s hospital last month.

Ronan and his wife Storm met patients as they helped decorate the tree with baubles made by staff, patients and their families.

Thirteen-year-old Luca Ambrosone from Hemel Hempstead has been treated by Evelina’s team for almost four years as he waits for a kidney transplant.

He said: “I’ve never seen so much Lego in my life, apart from in my Lego box at home.

“The best part was getting to build a decoration, I made a sleigh for Father Christmas.”

The tree is made from 72,432 individual Lego bricks and took six people 343 hours to build.

The Boyzone star and solo artist said: “We had our own little boy eight months ago, which really brings home the stories of the children and families here at Evelina London.

“The kids might not recognise me as I’m not in One Direction, but hopefully we can help raise awareness of this great cause.”

This Christmas Lego is giving 20,000 Lego sets to children in

College opens new centre after its £2.5m rebuild A BRAND new centre is now open for local people across south London to enrol in Lambeth College courses, including one that helps youngsters aged 16-25 into work.

The Prince Trust Team Programme boasts that three out of four people who take part go into work or progress onto an educational or training courses.

The new Brixton Centre on Brixton Hill has been completely rebuilt to the tune of £2.5 million, including extensive IT facilities.

The vast majority of the college’s

intake at the centre and at its larger site in Clapham are from Lambeth and Southwark.

Most of the Brixton site’s sixteen classrooms are for students studying English as a second language, commonly known as ESOL, but The Prince Trust Team programme is seen as an excellent way to get young people on the path to a career of their choice.

14 years for robber who attacked dog walker in park with a screwdriver DULWICH

A VIOLENT robber who left a dog walker paralysed after attacking him with a screwdriver in Dulwich Park has been locked up for more than a decade.

Jermaine McDonald, 26, of no fixed abode, was put behind bars for thirteen years on Friday, December 1, for wounding with intent.

He will also serve a further five years on licence.

During the trial, Inner London Crown Court heard how at about 1pm on April 27 McDonald approached the 31-yearold victim who had been walking his dog with a female friend, aged in her 30s, in Dulwich Park.

McDonald stabbed the victim to the left side of his head and to his chest.

He also kicked him when he was lying on the ground. The woman was not physically injured.

The woman's handbag was stolen and bank cards were used by McDonald, who spent less than £100 on cigarettes and alcohol in three contactless transactions.

Detectives from Southwark CID investigated the attack and arrested McDonald on April 30.

In a statement read out in court, the victim’s girlfriend said the attack had changed their lives forever.

"If the attack has not ruined our lives, it has certainly changed them forever in a way that I would not wish on anyone,” she said.

"Watching him lying in a hospital bed, connected to machines, sedated and paralysed is the most terrible thing I have ever experienced.

"He was in intensive care for six weeks in total. The doctors kept him in an

artificial coma for sixteen days and, once the sedation was stopped, it took another ten days for him to regain consciousness.

“He had to be on a ventilator because he was in such a deep sleep and, at the time, the doctors had no idea whether he would ever breathe fully by himself again.

"He is still often confused and struggles to remember where he is, why, what he has just done and even whether I have been to visit him.

"Perhaps the hardest thing at the moment is the uncertainty about our future.

“Every day, I am so grateful that he is still with us and that he can communicate and move and his personality is still in many ways like before.

"However, I don't know how much he will improve and what our life will be like.

“The fact it was caused by the violent act of another human being makes it so much harder."

HE LOCAL hospital in my constituency, King’s College Hospital, has one of the busiest and best A&E departments in London.

Staff are working hard every day to provide excellent care, and are consistently meeting cancer treatment waiting times of 62 days and improving intensive care, despite the pressure inflicted by Tory cuts. I recently met with the Chief Executive of King’s, Nick Moberly. He told me significant work is underway to improve homecare for people after operations, increase the number of beds available and streamline the linkup between different emergency departments. King’s do an excellent job with the limited money they have and recently took on the running of the Princess Royal University Hospital in Bromley and its A&E department, which is being turned around under their management.

This year has been particularly hard for the staff at King’s. On top of the deep Tory cuts all hospitals face, staff at King’s have been through the unprecedented trauma of looking after 23 victims of the Westminster and Borough Market terror attacks and 12 victims of the horrific Grenfell Tower fire, and have demonstrated the utmost calmness, professionalism and care.

But King’s are not immune from funding pressures, and these have led to difficulties in meeting the 4 hour waiting target for treating people in A & E. Across London - district nurses have halved under the Tory government and inevitably it’s been nurses in emergency care who have to pick up the slack when they aren’t there.

More than 40% of newly recruited nurses are leaving full time employment within their first year and the overall number of nurses and health visitors is now lower than when the Tories entered government in 2010.

King’s have worked hard to reduce their staffing shortage, but the hospital are still short of 528 nurses and midwives. According to the Royal College of Nursing, the main reasons nurses are leaving the job they love are rising workload and staff shortages.

The Tories fail to acknowledge that it is dedicated hospital workers, doctors, and nurses who deliver the NHS. Instead of paying them fairly the government has made them bear the brunt of their cuts, enforcing a 1% pay cap which has cut the value of nurses’ wages by 14% since 2010. The Tories’ own figures show the number of nurses quitting because of worries about their finances or their health has doubled.

This crisis is all of the government’s making. NHS staff need to be paid fairly, not least to ensure they can afford to rent or buy homes near the hospital they work in. What does it say about the government’s priorities that in the Budget last month they could only find £350 million to help the NHS cope with the winter crises and made no commitment on staff pay? Yet they were able to find 11 times that amount to spend on a disastrous ‘no deal Brexit’ which will only further hit NHS staffing levels as EU citizens, who make up 14% of the NHS workforce in London, are put off coming here.

At Beanstalk this solidarity is particularly meaningful. Our volunteers are an essential and valued part of our work to address the literacy crisis in the UK. Together we share a belief that we can drive change and improve the outcomes for children through sharing our love of books and the magic of storytelling.

Unfortunately many children do fall behind with their reading and need extra help. The majority of our volunteers spend 30 minutes with each of three children, twice a week, at a local primary school, helping them develop their confidence and reading skills. Our volunteers change lives – without them, thousands of children would still be struggling to read, and facing all the problems associated with low literacy levels.

But we need more reading helpers to join us if we’re to be able to offer this support to all those who need it. As a reading helper you will play a vital role in nurturing children to be the best they can be: confidence and selfesteem will be developed through fun, literacy-based activities, raising both reading attainment and future aspirations.

Icing on the cake

In response to K J Barry’s “Let them eat cake” letter published in last week’s News, as the instigator of the 1947 Peek Frean Royal Wedding Cake Project and “Keeper” of the Peek Frean Museum; I felt I have the right of a reply.

First of all it’s not a real cake, as if the articles published in the News had been read correctly you would have realised that it’s a full scale model of the cake made by Peek Frean & Co, back in 1947 for the marriage of then Princess Elizabeth to Lt. Philip Mountbatten. Whilst the exterior is made of icing sugar, the interior is polystyrene.

Back in 1947 the company were so pleased with their creation, made by employees at the company, that they had a full scale replica model of the cake made. This used to stand in their reception until 1989 with the closure of the company. From there it was transferred to the Pumphouse Museum in Rotherhithe as part of a Peek Frean Exhibition, until that closed when Southwark Council withdrew its funding. The original model was then destroyed by squatters who had gained entry into the old Pumphouse building in 2015, turning the original model cake upside down, throwing red paint over it and sticking a large capital “A” on the glass cabinet, but taking a thank you letter written by the then Princess Elizabeth to the company and its employees, along with a pastillage statuette of St George and the Dragon which topped the model.

So what did that destruction achieve? Did it change the world, bring the government down or improve the lives of the population?

No, what it did was to destroy the work of some very talented local employees... i.e. “workers” from a local company and major employer that actually cared for their staff and the wider community... in my book the destruction was a bit of an “own goal”.

If you look at the history of Peek Freans you will learn that they were one of the first companies to locally introduce the Saturday half day, have a company doctor and dentist (who extracted 1,053 teeth in his first year) way before the introduction of the NHS, annual day trips to the coast (1860’s), a library, sports and social clubs open to all employees (1890s), a Works Committee (1918), decent wages and working conditions (compared to some local employers at the time) and featured in their staff magazine topics of interest to both male and female employees (1905).

Outside of the factory gates, every November when local people stand around the War Memorial in West Lane, Bermondsey, the main mover

and funder for this structure was Arthur Carr, owner of the Peek Frean Factory. Many older locals as children will remember sliding down the glorious “Bermondsey Joy Slide” in St James’s Churchyard (demolished

by Southwark Council), yet again provided by Arthur Carr. A move to bring a similar slide back is underway.

Then there were the food parcels for prisoners of war and war weapons weeks fundraising drives during WWII. Lastly, yearly Christmas Parties for children of the employees.

As for the new replica of the 1947 Royal Wedding Cake, the project was about celebrating the company, the craft and skill of its employees, not solely the Royal Family as mistaken

by K J Barry. As for its construction, the model was made by members of the British Sugarcarft Guild who came from across the whole country, the world and all walks of life and differing backgrounds, and any participation in the project was on a purely voluntary basis. The whole project was sponsored by a number of companies and organisations which like the Guild members, I personally and now publicly thank. We even had cooperation from the Royal Collection.

The current Peek Freans Museum itself in not publicly funded, in fact it receives no monetary funding whatsoever, it relies solely on donations and support in other ways, as well and mine and my colleague’s pocket. It’s free to visit, with bookings taken in advance.

In closing and to answer the final point raised…Yes the project was well worth it, every single step of the way!

ECEMBER BRINGS around eight hours of light each day; and with low cloud it often seems much less. But the Solstice falls on Thursday 21st December - when winter officially begins!

After this time it will gradually get lighter.

Most plant growth will be at a standstill for the next couple of months, but it depends what is in your garden as to how much work there is to be done!

Check fruit trees for diseases such as canker. To deter winter moth attach grease bands to the trunks of apple trees.

If you are the proud owner of a Fig tree – remove all immature fruits (they will not grow/ripen) leave anything smaller than a bean to develop for next year.

From November to March new fruit trees/bushes and ornamental shrubs can be planted. General tidying and clearing leaves is always needed. If you are not using hanging baskets for winter displays empty and store until next season. Don’t forget to feed the wild birds; clean feeders and water bowls thoroughly with Citrox disinfectant (available from www.organiccatalogue.com) to limit the spread of disease. Citrox can also be used to clean garden pots, tools etc.

Flowers will be largely missing from the garden; but there are seasonal shrubs in bloom – usually Hebe and winter Jasmine. Colour mostly comes from evergreens and the dazzling array of shrub berries.

Seasonal interest for window boxes can be achieved from a mix of evergreens such as dwarf conifers, Hebe pinguifolia Pagei (attractive blue-green leaves and little white flowers in spring) herbs such as Rosemary prostratus, miniature daffodils plus Primroses.

Attention also turns to seasonal indoor plants – Hyacinths, Amaryllis, Christmas cactus and winter cherry.

Hyacinth bulbs are specially prepared to flower around Christmastime; they give a heavy sweet perfume; keep cool and the compost slightly moist - as for other houseplants.

Choosing Christmas gifts for the gardener is not always easy; books are usually welcome and there are hundreds available on every aspect of horticulture. The RHS Pruning & Training: Revised New Edition; How to Prune (1 Mar 2017) by Christopher Brickell and David Joyce is a hardback full of comprehensive and useful information. Collaborative exhibition commemorates theatre

he Melodramatic Elephant in the Haunted Castle is a multi-media exhibition that follows on from the recently performed play on the history of the Coronet Theatre and how performance and art has always been at the heart of London’s Elephant and Castle. The Coronet will be closing its doors for the final time on New Year’s Day after 147 years. This exhibition poignantly dramatises the intertwined fate of a Victorian actress and the building as a theatre, cinema and contemporary music venue.

Nigerian writer, Inua Ellams, is a poet, playwright, performer and artist. The action takes place in barber shops around the world as the story moves seamlessly through

a melodramatic star of the Victorian stage and the Elephant and Castle Theatre’s first female manager. She was reported as having gone mad when the theatre burnt down in 1878 and she lost all her costumes. Centre stage in the exhibition will be an installation of burnt clothing, poignantly evoking her mental anguish and the catastrophic loss to her business. Archival displays about the history of the Coronet and the tradition of melodrama will be complimented by a series of large scale drawings and a 50 minute programme of short films.

Heartfelt confessional

In recent years The Artworks has grown to become an important social hub in the Elephant and Castle area. It has always been full of superb restaurants and bars, but not live entertainment. But all of that is changing and Cabaret Rinse aims to be part of that change.

The show has some unique features that make it not only fun, but also a complete night out. It has a live interactive mass raffle, a variety bill of top cabaret artists, and the audience even get to choose what Mike performs on the night. There's also a pop up bar serving locally brewed craft beers.

Mike, the star and creator of the Cabaret Rinse concept explains, "I

premiered my one man touring comedy show Brain Rinse at The Artworks and the audience loved it." Brain Rinse is very interactive but it’s the same show each time. I wanted to create something that was different every time.

Something that The Artworks audiences could enjoy there on a regular basis. My hope," he continues, "is that they will return every month and make it their cabaret as much as mine" The special guests this month are brilliant female clown Lucy Hopkins and hilarious, absurdist storyteller Bob Slayer.

A deeply reflective play so grand in ambition and scope might seem heavy going, but the script was far from preachy. The performance was delivered with comic gusto by a strongly unified cast. The use of language and vocal sound in the play struck a chord of recognition with audience members.

Accents, brilliantly coached by Hazel Holder, transported us to each new barber shop and the actors transformed fluidly from one character to the next. The play’s rhythmical scenes connect through the use of harmonic African song. I left the theatre feeling well travelled and aglow from the warmth of an evening of high quality drama and a performance that warmed the souls of its audience.

I stepped out of the icy winds of the Southbank into the warmth of the Dorfman Theatre. That warm glow spread further as I sat amongst an audience that was a refreshing cross section of the London that I know and love; black and white, old and young.

The theatre was in the round and the play was already in motion as the audience took their seats.

Some audience members were taken to a barber seat as music pounded and actors grooved, writes Ingrid Gray.

The humble fish and chips is humble no more. The nation’s favourite has now taken up a position in the refined dining area because Olley’s, the award-winning fish and chip restaurant, has once again raised the bar and set a standard others need to attain if they want to keep up. Not content to rest on its laurels, Olley’s has teamed up with some of England’s best vineyards to pair their top fish dishes with England’s finest wines, writes Michael Holland.

On the launch night I was there to taste these combinations with representatives from the industry, vineyard owners and a multitude of writers and bloggers. We saw many myths exploded and old traditions pushed aside.

Ponsonby of PR outfit R&R recounted the night the interested parties sat round with the fish and wines and worked out which went with which. He laughs in the face of old ‘rules’ about only drinking white wine with fish, and will be the first to crack open a rosé with his Prawn

Cocktail, or a Pinot Noir to accompany a Battered Hake dish.

With wines from Surrey, Hampshire, Kent, Sussex and Dorset all vying for table space alongside the various fish that was mainly sourced from England, we tasted some exciting pairings. Some

of the most surprising combinations were also the most tantalising. The fizz in the Jenkyn Place Blanc De Noirs cut right through the oils in the Grilled Herring on Fried Bread; the Lemon Sole, initially in danger of being overwhelmed by its batter was rescued by the Lyme

Bay Shoreline Bacchus. Amid all the freshly cooked fish and delightful wines there were some real standout moments.

I was very surprised with the crispiness and lightness of the gluten-free batter, which is now always available in Olley’s after they found that offering gluten-free just two nights a week was not enough.

With more and more people realising they don’t need gluten in their lives I believe we will be seeing more of this.

On the down side, I wasn’t keen on the Battered Salmon, but I still tried it.

It was not easy to pick a favourite; The Chapel Down Brut N/V with the Prawn Cocktail was an excellent pairing - The Starter of Champions - and theJenkyn Place Brut with Battered Cod was an absolute winning combination. Deep down, though, I think my favourite point in the evening was when trays of chips were brought round with a Mushy Pea dip! The chip has now been truly gentrified.

But what does come out on top is the realisation that fish and chips is not something just to have with a can of lemonade or a cup of tea; this traditional dish can now be enjoyed with all the accoutrements of its newly found high end status. Olley’s has moved with the times, it is keeping ahead of changing trends and putting fish and chips up where it belongs.

‘The boy scouts are carrying on’ - a wartime scout promise to the nation “I PROMISE to do my best, to do my duty to God and the King and to help others whatever it costs me...” reads the scouting pledge.

The brave young boys of Bermondsey took this commitment to heart as they defended the home-front with a quiet stoicism.

During the Second World War, over 50,000 Scouts trained to undertake National War Service jobs, including acting as police messengers, firemen and stretcher bearers.

The everyday heroism of the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe scouts was such that in 1941 they were presented with a Bronze Cross, the highest gallantry award a scout can gain, nine Silver Crosses, one Gilt Cross and thirty Certificates of Gallantry.

Warden Frank James Leopold Davis was just seventeen-years-old when a bomb hit Holy Trinity Church in Dockhead on Dec 8, 1940. Initially, he survived the bomb but one of his friends, a fellow messenger, was trapped under the rubble. Fearless Frank rushed back in and managed to save his friend but was himself killed in a further explosion.

His bravery was celebrated the following year when he was awarded the Bronze Cross, the Scout’s version of a VC medal, by president of the County of London Boy Scouts, Sir John Shea.

Davis, of Parker’s Row, was just one of many unsung acts of bravery from the young Scouts of Bermondsey and Roherhithe, noted in an edition of the Daily Mirror in 1941, just before the medals and certificates were presented to the courageous Troops.

“Their deeds will become a legend in the Scout movement – in spite of themselves. Because they don’t talk about what they did,” it reads, explaining that no one would know about the scout’s extraordinary acts of bravery if it weren’t for a visit from another Scout group, who then told Head Quarters what their comrades had been doing during a particularly heavy blitz on the docks.

Two 16-yr olds, Eric Young and Nick Murray, were awarded Silver Crosses for digging people out of Anderson shelters and fighting fires under heavy bombardment.

Scoutmaster G F Winmill – who subsequently joined the Royal Navy – was reported to have given two pints of blood at a hospital before going out immediately to lead his lads in rescue work.

Scoutmaster E J Burgess, of the 18th Bermondsey Troop, was a courageous leader of a messenger service, and one of a concert party visiting the shelters. In midperformance he was told that his own house had been destroyed in a

bombing raid. On being assured that his wife and son were unhurt, he carried on.

In another shelter, while fires were raging all around, a scout seized a guitar and sang to the people to keep them in good spirits during the ordeal in a scene reminiscent of the sinking Titanic.

Fire-fighting was one of the most important and dangerous duties of the Scouts in wartime, as they were in charge of tackling the blazing trail of destruction caused by incendiary bombs.

Air Raid Patrol messenger, Charles Norris, 19, climbed onto a rooftop with a stirrup pump tied to him to try and extinguish one such fire. A warden who followed him with a bucket and saw that the situation was so dangerous that he ordered Norris to come down immediately. Patrol Leader, Norris, was so determined to do his job that he is reported to have replied “what a pity” before climbing down reluctantly.

The messenger service in

Bermondsey and Rotherhithe was controlled by a central office at Bede House in Southwark Park Road. As well as the valiant work of firefighting and search and rescue, the Goverment also asked the Scout Association of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe to collect waste paper.

They collected so many tons of the stuff that they needed to rent a railway arch for storage.

Ten years after they received their numerous medals and certificates a new Head Quarters was erected in Jamaica Road to replace the six scout buildings destroyed during the war.

In the mean time, their activities had been carried out in church crypts and under railway arches but the scouts were finally rewarded with a new home with its own quiet room to do homework, away from the “pernicious demands of television and the wireless.”

THE LONDON BOROUGH OF SOUTHWARK hereby gives notice that it proposes to make an Order under Section 247 of the above Act to authorise the stopping up of the following area of public highway shown hatched black on the plan attached to the draft Order:An area of highway forming part of 61 Southwark Street approximately 3 metres east from its junction with Great Guildford Street located at the back of the southern footway measuring 46 metres in length and 3 metres in width.

In order to carry out the following changes: Infill part of the floor plate between the front and rear offices that will run from 1st to 7th floor in a form of a glazed link. The proposed infill would reduce the extent of the atrium at roof situated at 1st floor.

The current acoustic enclosure at roof level is to be extended to this infill part of the roof. The rooflights which serve the upper ground level are to be enlarged.

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that because of development works by Derwent Valley London, it has made an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in Colombo Street from the junction of Blackfriars Road for approximately 53m in a southerly direction.

An alternative route for traffic would be via, Colombo Street, Meymott Street, Hatfields, The Cut as applicable.

Colombo Street will be made two way for access and egress.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The restriction will be in operation between the 1st December 2017 – 11th February 2018 (extended dates).

Under the Localism Act 2011 the Council is required to appoint one or more Independent Persons who will give an independent view on allegations that councillors have behaved inappropriately. Currently Southwark Council has two Independent Persons, and their term comes to an end in July 2018.

In accordance with the Localism Act 2011 Southwark Council will appoint at least two Independent Persons. Their term will commence in July 2018 and will be for three years.

The council has adopted a Code of Conduct which sets out what is expected of councillors. When there is an allegation that a councillor has breached the Code, the Independent Person will help assess whether there has been a breach.

If you are interested in holding the post of Independent Person - helping to promote and monitor high standards in public life, serve the local community and uphold local democracy, then you may want to apply.

To be eligible for consideration you will need the qualities set out in the Person Specification - which you will find in the appointment pack. In essence you will need to have good inter-personal and analytical skills, and the ability to make balanced and objective assessments. Communication skills will also be very important.

DAVID HAYE is promising to give fans the “biggest, most explosive, blockbuster fight night” after his rematch with Tony Bellew was confirmed for May 5, 2018.

Haye lost to Liverpool’s Bellew in the eleventh round of their bout in March, and he believes their next fight, also at The O2 Arena, will “eclipse” that epic.

Haye and Bellew were set to renew hostilities on December 17, but the fight was postponed after the Bermondsey former two-weight world champion injured his bicep in a freak accident.

Haye, 37, admits his “career and legacy” is “on the line”.

“Whilst the first chapter of the HayeBellew saga didn’t go my way, fans were left on the edge of their seats throughout the thrilling eleven-round battle,” Haye said. “The rematch in May will no doubt eclipse this.

“Tony has boasted that the rematch gives him the opportunity to force me into retirement. Unquestionably I step into the ring on Saturday, May 5 with both my career and legacy on the line.

“After my freak accident down a stairwell last month, I was heartbroken not to give everyone the ending to 2017 I wanted. Since then I had to accept the cards I had been dealt, remain positive and focus on factors which are within my control: rehabilitation and rescheduling the fight.

Hamlet through in cup but wobble in league

DULWICH HAMLET are through to the quarter-finals of the London Senior Cup after a comfortable 3-1 win at Corinthian Casuals on Tuesday night.

Anthony Acheampong put Hamlet ahead in the 27th minute when he fired home Nathan Green’s knock-down.

Two minutes later the hosts should have been level after Rickie Hayles fouled Matt Reece in the box, but the Casuals player saw his penalty saved by Preston Edwards.

Shortly afterwards Omar Koroma’s effort was blocked for a corner and from the delivery Acheampong grabbed his second.

And Hamlet all but wrapped up the win before the break when Muhammadu Faal crossed and Koroma finished.

Edwards made a number of saves after the break to frustrate the hosts,

before Casuals got a last-minute consolation through Josh Uzun.

Last weekend, Hamlet’s thirteenmatch unbeaten league run came to an end as they went down 3-1 at Enfield Town.

Simon Thomas put Enfield ahead before Reise Allassani equalised eight minutes into the second half. But Ryan Blackman scored 22 minutes from time and as Hamlet pressed for an equaliser they were caught when Ben WardCochrane scored in the last minute to seal his side’s win.

Hamlet are still top of the Bostik League Premier Division, but now just three points ahead of Billericay, who have five games in hand.

On Saturday, Dulwich have the chance to get back to winning ways in the league when they take on Brightlingsea Regent at Champion Hill.

Mukhtar leads rout for Bermondsey’ Accies LONDON ACADEMICALS secured a stunning 6-0 victory over Southampton-based Trojans Hockey Club last weekend.

The Accies went in front after just seven seconds when James Brooke smashed home an aerial pass from Cypriot international Arion Alexopoulos leaving the Trojans defence ruing a lack of clear communication.

The Accies then began to build momentum with some intricate passages of play between the midfield trio of Simon Coles, Seb Golding and Danny

Bond, eventually culminating with two well-taken goals at the back post from veteran forward Eb Mukhtar.

The visitors were left visibly frustrated by their lack of circle entries largely thanks to the marshalling of defensive workhorses Tristram Gargent and Jake Bullock with the first half finishing 3-0.

The early minutes of the second half were a fraught affair with both teams trading blows and looking dangerous but it was the Accies who got the crucial fourth goal via nippy forward Ciaran Kelly.

Trojans responded well with a period of sustained pressure on the Accies goal culminating in a sharp save by goalkeeper Harry Bamber to deny the visitors.

In the last quarter of the game, two goals from Will Church and Eb Mukhtar to complete his hat-trick capped a strong performance by the team from Bermondsey.

Speaking after the game, captain Joe Melly was pleased with the performance. “I thought the guys played especially well, it was important that we got a result here today as the league is

very tight at the moment,” he said. “I thought we were clinical in attack and sure in defence. Trojans are a good side, but we have showed what we’re capable of here”.

The result also pleased player-coach Ed James: “It’s nice to see things that we work on in training coming off. We have worked on pushing our half-backs higher up the pitch to create more problems for the opposition and it worked well today. I thought Jon Alvis and Will Church caused a lot of problems doing that in the opposition

Fish claim bragging rights

FISHER KEPT up their promotion push with a superb 3-1 win at rivals Stansfeld last weekend.

Dean Harrison’s side took the lead after just six minutes through Jamie Brown, before Toyeeb Babatunde doubled the advantage after a quarter of an hour.

Stansfeld pulled one back against the run of play but Ritchie Hamill’s brilliant strike made it three as Fisher comfortably defended their lead to take all three points at Foxbury Avenue.

The result leaves Fisher fourth in the SCEFL First Division table, five points behind Snodland but with four games in hand.

In the junior ranks, Fisher under-7s completed their Orange League campaign with results deciding whether they would play A, B, C, or D league football after the new year. After a dominant first-half display they started the second half slowly against Junior Reds to fall 2-0 behind. But AJ Sinclair reduced the arrears and then headed a last-gasp equaliser for a 2-2 draw.

In the second game Sinclair scored two more to take his tally to 30 for the season. But it wasn’t enough as Junior Reds scored from two slick late moves to win 3-2.

From their 22 league games Fish won thirteen, drew four and lost five.

MILLWALL TICKED a few boxes on Saturday as they kicked off December with a win that looked like it wouldn’t come for a while but was deserved in the end.

There was a goal and an assist from a striker, a centre-back on the mark and another away manager locking his side in the dressing room long after the final whistle to dress down his squad.

Lee Gregory was ill on Saturday but there was little chance he wasn’t going to play against his hometown club, the one that released him as a youngster.

Gregory, 29, was still playing in the Northern Premier League Division One North – the eighth tier of English football – when he was 22 and in the Conference North when he was 24.

He certainly plays like he is driven by memories of a professional career almost lost and when he got his first proper chance against Sheffield United he betrayed no sign he was feeling the pressure of a two-month goal drought. He has taken harder knocks than from those that say he should be scoring more, and he is assured knowing he is contributing to the side even when he isn’t on target.

He, Steve Morison and Jed Wallace in particular tore into the Blades, the latter full of energy after three games out through suspension.

The trio were involved early on when Morison lifted a pass over the visiting defence to Wallace, who is never satisfied just to stay on the right wing. Wallace flicked inside to Gregory but the ball just wouldn’t

come down and United cleared. But the tone was set for the early stages.

Fourteen minutes in it was no surprise to see Millwall take the lead and it was a variation of that attacking combination that provided it. Wallace picked up possession on the counter-attack wide on the right before cleverly cutting inside a covering player and finding Morison, who then switched the play back to his striker partner.

Gregory has a fine first touch, and he controlled the ball with his left foot to spin way from John Fleck before firing low past Jamal Blackman with his right.

George Saville almost made it two when he sent a half-volley towards the top corner, but Blackman got a fingertip to the ball to keep his side in the game.

Millwall, though, were never likely to keep opponents with such quality on the ball and attacking threats

quiet for long. The Lions were vulnerable on their left side, where Chris Basham kept attacking space behind Shane Ferguson, with James Meredith tucking inside. Basham crossed for David Brooks to shoot low but Jordan Archer saved.

Another cross from Sheffield United’s right wing-back flashed across the box as Millwall lived dangerously.

It did seem only a matter of time, and the visitors were back level when Mark Duffy chipped to the back post and Brooks sent a superb left-footed volley flying past Archer into the top corner three minutes before half-time.

That was when Lions boss Neil Harris decided to change formation, sending his side out to match the Blades’ 3-5-2, with Ferguson now left wing-back to counter Basham’s trusts.

It took a while for his players to

settle into their new shape, but it looked a masterstroke in the 66th minute. Initially it was Gregory who lost the ball, but he showed typical competitiveness to win possession back off Jack O’Connell, before he sprung to his feet and threaded a needle to put Romeo in behind Enda Stevens. Gregory joked later about the assuredness of the finish, Romeo slightly losing his footing as the ball bobbled out of Blackman’s reach into the far corner.

Gregory went off to a standing ovation in the 76th minute, with Ben Thompson coming on. With three minutes left Millwall won a freekick on the left, and Jake Cooper rose at the back post to head Wallace’s delivery in off the crossbar.

Harris praised Gregory afterwards but also highlighted Wallace’s contribution. “I think we saw the importance of Jed Wallace. Not only does he give us pace and energy but he gives us moments of quality. The quality of the link-up with Steve Morison and Lee for the goal and then the ball in for Jake’s goal.”

Blades boss Chris Wilder, meanwhile, sounded as bewildered with his team’s fate as had the likes of Jaap Stam and Thomas Christiansen before him. “This game wasn’t won tactically, in my opinion,” he said. “It was won because they got to more first and second balls from the off.”

It’s not complicated, but it’s demanding and it’s effective, particularly when you have players like Gregory willing to work so hard.

Harris will hope Steve Bruce is the next manager locking his players in the dressing room asking where it went wrong.

KRIS TWARDEK admits there have been “ups and downs” in the last eighteen months – but says he approached this season with a “nothing to lose” attitude.

In the last eighteen months, Twardek made his full Millwall competitive debut in the EFL Cup, his senior debut for Canada and his Championship debut in the recent 0-0 draw against Hull City.

After the high of his senior Lions debut last year – which, luckily, coincided with a visit from his brother Will from Canada – came a difficult spell on loan at Braintree when he was initially a regular before he lost his place and the club were relegated to the National League South.

Twardek, 20, admits he felt pressure going into the 2016-17 season as he felt he was at an age when he needed to make an impact.

He played fifteen senior games before at the end of the season applying an “honest” approach to analysing his game to see how he could take the next step. At an end-of-season meeting before the squad broke for the summer, his manager Neil Harris and his coaches identified his movement as one aspect of his game he could improve.

Twardek reached another milestone this season with that Championship appearance, but he isn’t putting too much pressure on himself as he reflects on the strides he has made since the start of last season.

“There have been a lot of ups and downs,” Twardek says. “Going into last season you’re nineteen, turning 20 and that’s the age when you need to start making appearances. For me, making the cup debut last season, that really motivated me to crack on and I went on loan and got a good run of games. There were ups and downs there as well, you start off really well but towards the end of it we were battling relegation and ended up being relegated.

“It was tough but it was a good experience. In men’s football you learn a lot of different things that you don’t get in the under-23s or being on the fringes.

“I went back in the off-season and knew I had to crack on. I looked at what I could do better. It was an honest period for me.

It’s easier when you’re away from it all and you can reflect on everything. You have meetings when you leave and they can tell you things that you can do better.

You look at yourself and know what you need to do to step up to the next level.

“I looked at those things and tried to get better. Movement, for example, finding the ball more efficiently and getting into more dangerous areas. You look at previous games to see where you can improve. It’s also really important to come back in top physical condition.

“Then coming back here stepping up a level to the Championship, there are new signings coming in, better teams and higher expectations so you really have to get along with everyone else or else you’re going to fall by the wayside.

My mindset at the start of it was, you’ve nothing to lose. You’re going up to a higher level and it’s going to be harder so you have to just focus on yourself. That’s what I tried to do.

“I went into it thinking that I couldn’t take it too personally if I wasn’t reaching

the levels I wanted. At the end of the day it’s a hard thing to be a part of, 20 years old at a Championship club.

So I cracked on and tried my best to get as involved as possible.

“When I came in at the start of the season if you’d told me I’d be making my Championship debut I wouldn’t have believed that.

“The gaffer said to me, ‘you’ve found your way in and around the first-team squad, making benches and training with the first team, so we’ll see where it goes’.

It led to a debut and to being on the bench more and more. That was good for me.”

Twardek was also a part of a little piece of Millwall history this season, as he was one of six Lions players included in senior international squads at the same time.

“That really surprised me as well,” he says of his debut against El Salvador playing with the likes of Burnley’s Scott Arfield. “I had been on the bench a couple of times for Millwall.

I had had a good year with the Canada under-20s and scored a few goals. I was well respected by the coaches so I think that’s what got me the chance.

“I went there with an open mind. I was the youngest one in the group, there were 23 players and obviously you can only make six substitutions so there were going to be six players missing out on playing.

There were intra-squad games and it went well and I ended up getting subbed in.

There were five players who hadn’t yet made their debuts and he [manager Octavio Zambrano] only gave it to me, so that was special. At the time they had it

livestreamed and it was on Thanksgiving so my whole family were watching it together.”

When Twardek was a youth player he was given time to spend Christmas in Ottawa with his family, but that changed with his elevation to the first-team squad.

However, he is thankful that it is a closely bonded group at Millwall.

He says: “Christmas is always special, in Canada it’s always snowy. When I was younger I was able to go back for the Christmas break. But obviously now when you’re in and around the first team you can’t do those things. It makes it a bit tough whenever your whole family is together and enjoying it and you’re in England on your own.

“But you have your team-mates. I remember the manager [Harris] saying, ‘I

want to sign good players, but I also want to sign good people.’ The more good people you have in a dressing room then the better the atmosphere is going to be.

Everyone knows the objectives and everyone has the same goal. That helps build the team morale.”

His morale will be further boosted if he is named Canada’s under-20 player of the year. He is among six players nominated with the winner announced December 12.

He has also been buoyed by his reception whenever he has played from Millwall’s fans, though he won’t take anything for granted.

“Anytime you have people supporting you it’s nice,” Twardek says. “At the same time things change.

But any support whenever you’re a young player helps.”

GEORGE SAVILLE insists Millwall are looking up rather than down as they head to Villa Park this weekend confident they can get their first away win this season.

The Lions have 22 points from 20 games, which puts them six points clear of the relegation zone and five off the top half of the Championship table.

Millwall ended a six-game winless run with a 3-1 victory over third-place Sheffield United last Saturday, and Saville believes that performance – when they had to quickly adapt to a change in formation to 3-5-2 – on the back of a relatively poor run demonstrates their character.

“Sheffield were flying and the gaffer felt we had to match their set-up to not let the game get away from us,” Saville explained. “We started really well but lost our way a little bit. He didn’t want us to be lost in the second half. The boys showed unbelievable character to come out the way we did, adapt the way we did and win the game the way we did.

“Saturday was overdue and it shows how much good spirit and character we’ve got in the team to not let other results previously affect us, to go into that game how we did and set the tempo in the first 20 minutes, and then to go on to win.

“I know we lost against Fulham the week before but we came off that pitch thinking, ‘we did well there’. I know it’s easy to say it now that we could have picked up more points but over the course of a 46-game season if we keep playing like we have been playing there is no way we won’t win games. It’s impossible.

“There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be looking ahead of us rather than behind us. The only team this season where I’ve thought, ‘hmm, they’re a good side’ was Wolves when we played them at Molineux.

that’s blown us away. We have seen teams that have blown other sides away.

The game against Wolves was the only one I thought we weren’t in it really.

We’ve played all the teams in the playoff area like Cardiff, Bristol City, Sheffield at the weekend. They’re all really good sides and they are where they are for a reason.

“I feel like we can compete in this league with nearly every team. We should be looking at going upwards.”

One thing that Millwall hope will

change for them to do that is refereeing decisions going their way rather than against them.

Saville revealed he can be mouthy with officials, but acknowledges that as one of the leaders in the side he needs to communicate more effectively with referees.

“We’ve had a lot of poor decisions against us,” Savile said. “There are loads off the top of my head I can think of and say, ‘if that had been different’. One that comes to my mind often is Gregs [Lee

Gregory] going through against Cardiff and being brought down and there was nothing given.

“It’s not even about Millwall. It would just be great to have a fair contest with the ref giving the same decisions to both sides. I’m not saying it’s because we are Millwall but I do think we have had more bad decisions than good decisions. They always say that they should level themselves out over the course of the season, but we’ll see.

“I do talk to the ref quite a lot but

normally I’m shouting at him because of a decision! But I have that role in the team now where I hope I can be a leader on the pitch and speak to the ref in a proper manner so I can understand the decision and work with him to make sure the outcomes are correct.”

Saville was also on the end of a poor refereeing call playing for Northern Ireland in November, when handball given against Corry Evans led to Ricardo Rodriguez scoring from the spot for Switzerland, and Michael O’Neill’s side couldn’t turn the World Cup play-off tie around in the second leg.

“I still sometimes think about that night now,” Saville admits. “The memory I have is of the second leg, it didn’t matter what had happened in the first leg because we still had that chance of qualifying. I still think about it quite often, I’m not sure why, it just comes into your mind that you could have been going to a World Cup. But I’ve got good memories of the experience and I try to take the positives from it and use it coming back here.

“It was unbelievable, it was such a whirlwind and all happened so quickly.

There were so many emotions on that Sunday, getting my first start, playing quite well and then obviously not getting the result we wanted and not getting through.

“There were too many emotions and it took a few days to digest. I was absolutely gutted we didn’t get to the World Cup.” There wasn’t a whole lot of time to dwell on those emotions, and there is little let-up now with Millwall set for their busiest period of the season.

They could set themselves up nicely for the rest of the month with a win on Saturday, and Saville feels that first victory on the road is close.

“We’re going to win an away game, there is no question about that, it’s just when it comes. If we can win Saturday against Villa at Villa Park then not only does that give us a boost but it’s back-toback wins and it’s against a top side.

“I really go into this game thinking there is no reason why we can’t win it.”

NEIL HARRIS admitted Millwall’s pairing with Barnsley in the third round of the FA Cup is not “the most exciting” for fans of both clubs.

The sides have met once already this season, Barnsley winning the Championship clash 3-1 in south London in September.

The Lions have lost five successive games against the Tykes, including 3-1 in the 2016 League One play-off final.

It is the eighth time in nine draws in the last two seasons that Millwall have been handed a home tie. Harris’ side reached the quarter-finals last season before they lost to Tottenham.

Harris was excited about the draw in general, after it threw up a Merseyside

derby between Liverpool an Everton and potentially three Premier Leaguenon-league clashes.

“I’ll speak freely, it won’t have been the most exciting draw for people,” Harris said. “It’s not the most exciting draw for fans of both teams.

“It’s a chance for both teams to go through. Barnsley will look at it and say they’ve beaten us at home already this year. We look at it that we are at home, which is a bonus. We know we can beat Barnsley.

“I’d have preferred a Premier League club and I’m sure Paul would have as well. It is what it is and we get on with it.

“I thought the draw was excellent, one of the best in the third round for a long time – other than Millwall playing Barnsley.”

NEIL Harris will have at least one selection dilemma this weekend as Conor McLaughlin returns from suspension for the clash with Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Harris said: “Shaun Williams only trained [last Friday] so including him [against Sheffield United] was never an option. He needs to train all of [this] week and then there’s a reserve game the week after to think about including him in.

“Just having back in the training group, he brings so much composure, quality, he brings an aura about him that big players have, and he’s a big player for us. Having him back is a big bonus.”

Millwall are still searching for their first away win in the league this season, and it won’t be easy to get it this weekend. Aston Villa have only lost once at home in the Championship in this campaign, and only Cardiff have conceded fewer goals on their own turf.

“It is some fixture list, but we go into it full of confidence. We couldn’t have a more difficult Christmas.

“It’s not just the teams we’re coming up against, it’s coping with

the games and the in-between times.

NEIL HARRIS admitted Millwall are “a massive underdog” against Aston Villa this weekend – but is adamant they can get their first away win this season at Villa Park.

The Lions were in confident form at their training base on Calmont Road this week after beating Sheffield United last weekend.

Harris said the squad “can’t wait” to face Villa as Millwall travel to a ground they last played a league game at in the old Division One in April 1990.

“The performances on the road have been very good. We have to win away from home sooner or later, no doubt about that whatsoever. The fans keep turning up in their thousands because they can see how well we are playing, they’re enjoying away games.

NEIL HARRIS is a fan of football at Christmas – but wants to see cleverer scheduling of local derbies to reduce the number of games over the period.

Millwall, with one of the smallest first-team squads in the Championship, play four times from December 23 to January 1.

Harris acknowledges the issue is complicated by the fact that festive fixtures boost clubs’ finances with higher gates, but believes extra

revenue can be generated if derby games are scheduled to give more fans the chance to attend.

There are four weeks from November 25 to December 23, for instance, when Millwall play just four games.

Harris admits that he is a “traditionalist” but he would like to see a more intelligent approach to scheduling.

“There are two ways of looking at it,” Harris said. “I love the Christmas period. But should the players and the whole industry have a break at Christmas and spend time with their families?

Probably.

Everyone should probably be off at Christmas.

“But I’m a traditionalist, I love the Boxing Day fixtures and the New Year’s Day fixtures, it’s a brilliant time to play football. I’m also a football fan. I get the whole going down to the stadium to watch a game on Boxing Day with your brother or sister, your mum, your nan and your kids. What a great day out and that’s why you get the biggest attendances on those days.

“My only concern has been and is, certainly now as a manager, we have all season to play all these games, we have four international breaks when everyone gets two weeks off and then we end up playing four games in eleven days

over Christmas. Why do we do it?

That’s what I don’t understand. I think that’s something that’s got to change and the only people who can change it are the FA. “But they are dictated to by TV and clubs saying it’s their biggest gate of the season, if they don’t get an extra 3,000 on that day then they’re going to struggle. Well, rearrange the fixtures. Play local derbies at better times. They could be arranged so much better. Play them at times when more people can get to them. We just need to be more switched on with things.

“Play at Christmas, yes, but don’t play as many fixtures, would be my advice.”

Williams, 31, is back in full contact training this week and is set to be available for first-team action before Christmas.

Former MK Dons midfielder Williams signed a one-year contract with the club after winning promotion to the Championship. There is an option for a further twelve months.

Williams has made 167 appearances for Millwall since January 2014 and scored twelve goals.

Williams wasn’t a regular in Neil Harris’ first full season in charge, but has become one of Millwall’s most important players.

“Shaun Williams just needs to get himself back on the football pitch,” Harris said. “He’s been a big player for me for the last twoand-a-half years since I took over.

He’s been great in the dressing room and he’s a really good bloke.

He’s shown his quality in a Millwall shirt.

“He has worked so hard in the last ten weeks to get fit and is now back into full training. He just needs to get himself back to full fitness and then we see what happens over the Christmas and new year period.”
