The cake and the search for the Platinum couple

HE NEWS is based in the old Peek Freans biscuit factory in Bermondsey and for over a year we have been sneaking a peak at the replica model of the Queen’s wedding cake, completed in time for her 70th anniversary.

This painstakingly delicate operation is a shining example of community spirit, as the volunteers - many of them local – got to work within months of the original replica being needlessly trashed after a break-in at the Pumphouse Museum in Rotherhithe.

All the volunteers, and the hard work of Peek Freans Museum keeper Gary Magold, should be commended.

If Gary and the teams of volunteers had not taken the time to recreate this historic replica (especially considering no other recplicas were made) it could easily have been lost in the sands of time.

The cake was the crowning glory of the famous biscuit factory presence in the area.

It is important that factories like Peek Frean & Co are remembered as they were an integral part of the area’s industrial history. It is a history that created a hardworking close knit community. That is why it was honoured with a blue plaque in a scheme run by Southwark Heritage Association, Southwark Council and the News.

The paper always make a point of interviewing any couples that manage to make it to their Diamond Wedding Anniversary (60 years), but have not yet covered a Platinum Wedding Anniversary (70 years). We would love to hear anyone locally, who has, or is this year celebrating such a mammoth milestone.

Actors dressed as film star Chaplin descend on train station to mark film anniversary

CHARLIE CHAPLINS wreaked havoc during rush hour at London Bridge station, marking the 100th anniversary of the comic’s silent film Easy Street.

Members of People’s Company theatre group dressed up as the famous British actor and performed their own silent film during the evening rush hour on Friday, November 17.

The pop-up event coincided with Southwark’s bid to become London Borough of Culture, which would see £1.1million worth of funding given to the borough for a year of cultural celebrations if it is successful.

John Whelan, a director of People’s Company, based at Southwark Playhouse, told the News: “Southwark has always been an area of culture; if we go back to Shakespeare it has that history so the obvious place for that money to come to is Southwark.

“Southwark does need the funding because there are so many small artsbased organisations in the borough.

“If you look at creative start-ups, Southwark has got the highest density for that in London so if you’ve got all that talent and capacity here, it’s a great place for that money to be invested.

“And it’s not just about the creative economy, it’s about all the other jobs that are created with that and all the

visitors it brings into the area as well.”

Councillor Johnson Situ, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for business, culture and social regeneration, added: “It was a pleasure to see these wonderful local actors bring joy to the crowds at London Bridge station.

“The arts are such a powerful and important tool and, with your support, the council’s bid for London Borough

of Culture will create even more opportunity and investment in local arts projects like this.”

Charlie Chaplin was born in Walworth in 1889 and is thought to have taken inspiration for Easy Street from his early years growing up on East Street.

Parents call for old Southwark fire station school plans to be given go ahead for 2019

PARENTS TURNED out in their droves to call for plans to build a secondary school on the former Southwark Fire Station to push ahead.

Developer Hadston submitted proposals to the council in February to redevelop the Southwark Bridge Road site into a secondary school and sixth form, sports hall, and homes.

The company had hoped the school would be open by September 2019 if plans were approved by the end of the year. But there could be a hold up, as the council is pushing for affordable housing to be included in the development.

But after paying £54million for the site in 2015, Hadston has said it is not viable to deliver affordable housing as well as the school and sports facilities.

Paola Wilson, who helped organise a

parents’ rally near the site on Friday, November 17, said the area was “crying out” for a secondary school.

The 49-year-old barrister said there were secondary schools in the area, but that they were either all-girl or Christian schools.

“They’ve come up with a proposal that’s very useful for the community because it provides a school and a sports centre that can be used by everybody and it’s going to be a fantastic facility,” said the barrister, who has a six-year-old son.

“There are four primary schools within

eight minutes’ walking distance of the site.

“Unfortunately there’s been an exodus of parents and families [from the area] historically because once their child is of secondary school age, they have to be somewhere within the catchment area of a secondary school.

“I think it’s going to be a bit of a hot potato because if it doesn’t get built, it’s an enormous waste of an opportunity for the borough.”

The new Haberdashers’ Aske’s Borough Academy would be a mixedsex non-selective 900-place secondary school and 250-place sixth form.

If plans are approved, the two-storey school is expected to admit 180 children a year, growing year on year.

The proposals submitted to the council also include plans for 199 homes, including a mix of one, two and three bedrooms, as well as converted fire

station cottages for family homes.

The residential building would be ten storeys in height at its tallest point.

A green space and a sports centre with a multi-use games area and outdoor artificial pitch for use by both the school and community are also part of the plans.

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “The school on the fire station site is our top priority and absolutely critical in ensuring Southwark has enough secondary school places for our children.

“The delay in taking a decision on the current planning application is due to the council awaiting confirmation from the GLA on how it wishes to address the amount of affordable housing within the scheme.”

Rotherhithe lantern parade to kick off Mayflower celebrations

A LANTERN procession will kick off a free five-day festival in Rotherhithe today.

Illuminate Rotherhithe 2017 has headed to the peninsula in the build up to Mayflower 400 celebrations.

It will begin with a lantern procession today, Thursday, followed by a concert at St Mary the Virgin Church.

Folk duo Jimmy Aldridge and Sid Goldsmith will perform at the event, and people are invited to take part by sharing

music commemorating the sailing of the Mayflower to the New World in 1620.

Free lantern-making workshops, folk dance and song workshops, ropehandling demonstrations, and Museum of London Docklands workshops are about to begin in all seven primary schools on the peninsula.

The folk dance workshops will culminate in a ceilidh at Bacon’s College which will see 480 children from different schools meet for the first time and dance together.

On November 24 the Citizens of the World Choir will be singing songs of

migration.

There will be a family ceilidh for all on November 25, a screening of The Pilgrims film followed by a discussion chaired by the local history society on November 26.

The festival has been organised as part of the Mayflower 400 celebrations, which will commemorate the sailing of the Mayflower to the New World in 1620.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL could be prepared to help fund Dulwich Hamlet FC, as the club struggles to pay its players under a new financial regime with Meadow Residential.

Council leader Peter John has said he stands by the comment he made in a live interview on the BBC’s Sunday Politics show, which featured the ongoing feud between Meadow and Southwark.

On the show, interviewer Norman Smith asked Cllr John: “Could you step in and fund it [Dulwich Hamlet]?”

To which Cllr John replied: “Well if need be we will do whatever is necessary to keep the club going and we have made that clear.”

He later told the News: “Dulwich Hamlet football club is a fantastic asset for the local community. We are hoping that Meadow will come forward with new plans that better meet all these objectives, but either way I have given the club a commitment that we will work with them to secure their future.”

On November 6, Hamlet’s managing committee publicly stated that Meadow had suddenly handed it responsibility for paying players’ wages. But the only money available will be given to it by Meadow, and will be limited to profits made from ticket sales and the bar.

The committee accused Meadow of leaving them without power to generate any of their revenue or any say over the day-to-day management of the club.

They also claimed Meadow has withheld information on how much money it can expect to receive to pay its players at the end of each month.

Committee member Thomas Cullen said: “We don’t know how much profit to expect and we don’t know whether it will be enough to cover the wage bills...

“We’re challenging for the title and we don’t want to lose our best players.”

MORE THAN £10,000 has been raised for Dulwich Hamlet as the club faces uncertaint y over whether it will be able to pay its players.

Accounts on Paypal and Justgiving were set up two weeks ago by the DHFC 12th Man fan blog .

Neil Cole, who co -runs the 12th Man blog , told the News that more than 300 online donations were made. And loads of cash was given to bucket collectors at Hamlet ’s home game against Harrow last Tuesday. “ The reaction from the fans has been fantastic and it ’s really positive,” the 37year-old said .

Neil will be out in force collecting cash this Saturday at Hamlet ’s home game against Lowestof t Town.

Also on the BBC programme, Cllr John said the developer’s plans were rejected because they did not meet the council’s policy for 35 per cent of homes to be “affordable housing”, and said a development of 50-60 flats would be acceptable.

The spokesperson for Meadow added: “If Southwark Council want to fund the Football Club, that is their choice, but if they really want to help, they could would restore the club’s lease on the [Greendale] astroturf pitch.”

Southwark looks to introduce fines for drivers who leave their engines idling Council hopes to crack down on air pollution

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL looks set to introduce fines for drivers who leave their vehicle engine running whilst idle, in a bid to cut air pollution.

Under new measures, parking enforcement officers will be able to issue penalty charge notices to car, bus, taxi and HGV drivers who refuse to switch off their engines when asked.

A council spokesperson said details of size of the fines, and the date of when the policy would be implemented, were yet to be decided.

But Westminster Council, which was the first borough to adopt the policy, has been dishing out fines of £80.

The plans are designed to crack down on the growing problem of air

pollution, which contributes to more than 9,000 early deaths in the capital each year, according to research by King’s College London.

Councillor Maisie Anderson, Southwark’s cabinet member for public health and social regeneration, said: “As part of the council’s bold new Air Quality Action Plan we are

taking steps to introduce engine idling enforcement - this is due to go live in the new year.

“While making arrangements for idling enforcement, we have also led and encouraged many voluntary anti-idling patrols at known idling hot-spots, to raise driver awareness of the health risks associated with

engine idling.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan is encouraging other authorities to follow suit. And a report by the London Assembly’s Environment Committee's found that cars, buses, HGVs and vans produce 43 per cent of all nitrogen oxides (NO2) pollution in the capital.

But the proposals were not looked upon kindly by the chair of Bermondsey-based London Cab Drivers’ Club, Grant Davis.

“This is typical lunacy, you have only got to look at the congestion that has been caused by the cycle super highways, and the works that have been done at Elephant and Castle, to realise councils and TfL have added to the congestion problems we have,” Grant said.

“From a cab driver’s point of view, I can say the industry is doing its bit.

From January, any cab driver who wants to replace his car will legally have to buy an electric zeroemissions vehicle.”

In April, this newspaper published results of a study by Greenpeace, which revealed the presence of dangerous levels of NO2 near 44 nurseries and pre-schools in the borough.

Historic replica restored just in time for royal anniversary after vandals wrecked original

A REPLICA of one of the Queen’s wedding cakes – made in Bermondsey by Peek Frean & Co – was restored just in time for her 70th anniversary.

Skilled workers at the Peek Frean biscuit factory, off Clements Road, made a six-foot tall cake and carefully transported it to Buckingham Palace at walking pace for the then Princess Elizabeth’s marriage to Prince Philip in 1947.

Staff at the factory are said to have been so proud of their creation that they decided to make a full-scale replica of the cake out of icing sugar.

But vandals broke into Rotherhithe’s Pumphouse Museum two years ago, where the replica was stored once the factory closed, and destroyed it.

Not knowing how to fix it, Peek Frean Museum keeper Gary Magold is said to have first called in a plasterer to look at the cake – before realising it was in actual fact made of icing sugar.

He then contacted the British Sugarcraft Guild (BSG), which

So what is on the cake?

Top tier: The centre plaque depicts a motor torpedo boat as used by the Sea Rangers in which Princess Elizabeth served, and on each side of this there is a Sea Rangers badge.

Speaking to the News, Gary Magold said: “The main cake is always made by the Royal Navy but there were eleven cakes selected to go to the palace and Peek Frean was one of them.

“There was only ever a full-scale model made of one of them, and that was of the Peek Frean cake.

“All of the plaques on this one depicted something that meant something to the royal couple.

“It’s actually quite emotional seeing it finished; when I found out the Pumphouse had been smashed up I couldn’t understand the reasoning for doing it.”

Judy Banks, national chair of the BSG, added: “We didn’t break anything while putting it together but it was quite stressful at times.”

The recreation of the replica cake will be officially unveiled at the Peek Frean Museum on November 30.

The British Sugarcraft Guild was formed in 1981 by people interested in sugarcraft and it now has about 3,500 members across the world.

Balcony safety issues found in flats built only a year ago

FIRE-SAFETY defects have been discovered in balconies on a block of council flats in Camberwell built only last year, the News can reveal.

Southwark Council confirmed on Tuesday that investigations by Geoffrey Osborne Ltd, the company which built the flats in 1-25 Piper Court, had found issues in the building’s balconies.

The common fault was that fittings which join barriers on residents’ balconies to the walls “were not in accordance with the specification or were missing”.

But residents have also complained of problems with rats, and other more minor design flaws in their homes.

Scaffolding has gone back up on the block, which was completed in September 2016 as part of the Elmington Estate regeneration scheme.

Families were told last week they should evacuate in the event of a fire, rather than stick to the commonly-given advice to “stay put”, which assumes that a fire will be contained in an affected property. 24/7 fire marshals have also been deployed and extra alarms have been fitted.

A spokesperson for Geoffrey Osborne Ltd, based in SE1, said: “We are conducting a detailed investigation to establish how these issues occurred and what remedial works are required to resolve them.

“We are working closely with the London Borough of Southwark in keeping residents fully informed and will continue to consult with them to ensure minimum disruption while remedial works are undertaken.”

The council said it will also carry out checks at other new-build council homes sites across the borough, but said “at this stage there is no suggestion that this is a wider issue”.

Wooler told the News her family have constant problems with their balcony filling up with rain water, and frequent problems with rats.

Lisa, 46, said: “The rats were a problem from day one. I’ve come from a very old building, and we never had a problem with rats. Then you come here and it’s terrible. It’s complete hell.

“Water doesn’t drain from the balconies, it just collects every time it rains until it starts weakening the wood underneath the board, and it gets really smelly.

“I live here and pay the rent and hope for the best. I’ve ask the council to be moved but they just said no.”

Her daughter Hayley, 24, who also lives in the flat with her son and daughter, added: “There was a rat under my daughter’s bed, and now she’s too scared

to sleep there. And they were nesting in our sofa.”

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “Our highest priority is residents’ safety and we took action as soon as this issue came to light, and wrote to residents to inform them.

“We are currently looking into what remedial works may need to take place and will let residents know what the options are by the end of this week.

“I am extremely sorry that this has happened to residents and appropriate action will be taken. We will continue to let residents know as we receive more information.”

Ledbury towers ‘need strengthening’ or could become vulnerable to ‘exceptionally strong winds’ says report PECKHAM

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has been told strengthening works must be carried out on the Ledbury Estate towers, or they could eventually become vulnerable to “exceptionally strong winds”.

A report by building surveyors Arup, published on Monday, detailed a catalogue of structural weaknesses found in the fourteen-storey blocks by Old Kent Road.

“To provide the buildings with sufficient resistance against disproportionate collapse, to meet current codified recommendations and best practice, structural strengthening measures are required,” the report said.

It recommended that concrete panels in the external and inner walls need reinforcing with steel, and that existing steel wall-ties need replacing.

Failure to do so in the “long term” could leave them unable to support

the weight of concrete wall or floor panels on levels above, and therefore vulnerable to collapse, if accidents such as “exceptionally strong winds”, “vehicle impact” or “fire” occurred.

Fire safety issues with cracks in dozens of residents’ walls were discovered in June, after the Grenfell tower tragedy.

Arup’s previous investigations found in August that the towers could have collapsed if a kitchen gas explosion had happened at any point since they were built (between 196770) because they had never received essential strengthening works.

Although all gas heating was cut and has been replaced, the council now faces the choice of whether to pay for extensive works, or to demolish the towers and rebuild them.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing, said the council had taken up Arup’s recommendation of “banning” residents from using bottled gas and oxygen cylinders.

She said: “We have been reminding residents not to use these [gas and

oxygen] in weekly newsletters, and strengthening needs to happen in order to mitigate the risk of high winds, for example. We need to consider all these other factors in our options for, and risk assessments of, the building and that is what we will be doing with the help of the independent consultant we plan to appoint in the very near future.”

Arup’s report said the “intrusive” strengthening works needed on the four towers “will require local

removal and reinstatement of plaster finishes, floor finishes and floor screeds, heating pipes, radiators, sanitary ware including baths and kitchens”.

Cllr Cryan added: “The next steps will be to appoint an independent consultant to look at the possibilities for the future of this estate. We hope that the resident project team will be involved in this appointment as well as helping to steer their work, before coming back to residents with

options. Whatever those options are [to strengthen or demolish the blocks], we know that residents will have to move out, either temporarily or permanently. I know this will be hugely disruptive for every family who needs to move, I apologise for that disruption, and I thank everyone for their patience. I want to reassure residents that we will do our utmost to make the process as smooth as possible and with as much support as we can offer.”

The News understands that the council will most likely make the decision at a future Cabinet meeting, after an “options appraisal” is produced by the consultant.

Council leader Peter John had previously said the council would be “extremely unlikely” to be able to rebuild the estate “without some private sector cross-subsidy” due to the council’s limited spending and borrowing power.

Since July, all tenants have already been given Band One priority to bid for new homes.

Council and Lib Dems oppose cycle superhighway plans Concerns raised over pollution and increased traffic on residential streets

COUNCIL BOSSES have opposed initial plans for a cycle superhighway through Bermondsey and Rotherhithe – raising concerns over pollution and increased traffic on residential roads.

Transport for London recently consulted on plans to build a 2.5-mile segregated cycle link along the A200 between Tower Bridge and Greenwich, running through Tooley Street and Jamaica Road.

It is hoped Cycle Superhighway 4 would make this section of the A200 safer – where there were 93 recorded collisions involving cyclists and 49 involving pedestrians between September 2013 and August 2016.

But a letter written by Southwark councillors Ian Wingfield and Mark Williams to London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner has revealed they support the plans for Cycle Superhighway 4 “in principle” – but not in their “current form”.

Cllr Wingfield, cabinet member for environment and the public realm, and Cllr Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said they were concerned traffic would idle for longer, causing increased pollution in the area.

They also said they were “deeply concerned by the impact on Southwark Park Road which is forecast to take an additional 200-300 vehicles per hour at peak which will fundamentally alter the look and feel, and air quality, of a heavily populated residential street”.

In their letter to commisioner Will Norman, the councillors added that they could not accept the increased journey time for buses.

Speaking to the News, Cllr Wingfield said: “We are very concerned that the proposed CS4 design will push more cars onto residential streets, causing air pollution, and increase local bus journey times.

“We have made this clear in our response to TfL. We have also offered a number of possible solutions to minimise the impact on local streets and make sure they don’t become more dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians.

“We have had several conversations with TfL since the summer and we will continue to work with them to examine these plans and look at ways we can reduce the negative impacts.”

Sir Simon Hughes, former MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark for 32 years, who still lives in Bermondsey, said he also opposed the current proposals – and urged TfL “not to proceed with them”.

“The CS4 proposals should not be proceeded with unless and until they can be agreed with Southwark Council and the governing party and principal opposition party on Southwark Council,” he said.

Simon Munk, infrastructure campaigner for the London Cycling Campaign, said he was “surprised and disappointed” by the letter.

“I think it’s really disappointing that we are talking about pollution and congestion issues but the issue is there’s too much traffic in the area,” he said.

“I don’t think any residential street in

Grove.

REDRIFF PRIMARY School managed to raise more than £750 for disadvantaged youngsters at a special Children In Need event.

Pupils and staff at the school in Rotherhithe organised a talent show with a string of acts, including comedians, singers, dancers, and gymnasts.

Money was also raised through children wearing non-uniform, voting for their favourite acts, and a cake sale.

All funds will go to BBC’s Children in Need, which provides grants to projects in the UK which focus on children and young people who are disadvantaged.

The projects Children in Need funds help children facing a range of disadvantages including poverty and deprivation, children who have been victims of abuse or neglect, and disabled young people.

Southwark plan consultation open until February

SOUTHWARK: The council is consulting on its final draft of the New Southwark Plan until February.

More than 70 sites earmarked for future regeneration and new planning policies have appeared in the plan.

The ‘proposed submission version’ of the plan is open for public consultation until February 12 – although it is the council’s final document for consideration and is not an open consultation for discussion.

After the consultation ends, there will then be an examination in public by a planning inspector.

The inspector will prepare a report for the council and may require changes to be made for legal reasons.

The final New Southwark Plan will then be adopted by the council. This is a decision taken by all councillors at a Council Assembly meeting.

Motorcyclist taken to hospital after collision

A MOTORCYCLIST was taken to hospital after coming off his bike in Bermondsey.

An ambulance was called to Jamaica Road at 4.22pm on Tuesday, November 21, to reports of a road traffic collision.

A male motorcyclist was treated at the scene and taken to hospital.

It is not known whether anyone else was involved in the incident or the extent of the man’s injuries.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 4.22pm to Jamaica Road, SE16, to reports of a road traffic collision.

“We sent an ambulance crew and a single responder in a car to the scene.

“We treated a man at the scene and took him to a major trauma centre as a priority.”

School seeks former students to inspire its pupils

DULWICH: A Dulwich school is seeking former students to inspire the next generation of pupils.

The Charter School, in Red Post Hill, is hoping to get in touch with former students in established careers and recent leavers in further education.

The school has been working with education charity Future First to help support current students by “harnessing” the talents and experience of alumni.

Christine Gilbert, executive chair of Future First and a former Ofsted chief inspector, said: “Every state school student should have the opportunity to succeed in life after school, regardless of their background.

Micky Simpson up for Football Supporters’ Federation award

MILLWALL’S FAN on the board has said he feels “truly humbled” to be nominated for a Football Supporters’ Federation award.

Micky Simpson is in the running to be named Supporter Liaison Officer of the Year in the 2017 FSF awards.

The 42-year-old has been shortlisted alongside six others for the accolade, which recognises the work supporter liaison officers do for fans across the country.

Mr Simpson has been the club’s fan on the board since the start of the season.

After four Millwall fans were caught up in the London Bridge terror attack on June 3, he arranged for them to be VIP guests at a Lions match against Bolton.

And the fans also appeared on the pitch to be honoured with a presentation by club chairman John Berylson.

“Let’s just keep our fingers crossed and see if I can win the award and bring it home for everyone.”

Ninety shortlisted candidates will battle it out across fifteen categories, recognising everything from the best players of 2017 to fans’ favourite away days. The awards will be presented at the Tower of London on December 4.

COMEDIAN BILL Bailey and the Great British Bake Off’s Sandi Toksvig will be part of the entertainment at this year’s SleepOut for the homeless at Southwark Cathedral.

Bailey will lead a line-up of entertainment at the Robes Project SleepOut tomorrow, Friday, while Toksvig will give an interview on stage.

Young tenor Dominick Felix, who helps at a shelter on the Old Kent Road, will perform for the crowds, along with brass band Oompah.

This is the seventh annual SleepOut at Southwark Cathedral, and hundreds are expected to brave potentially freezing cold, wet and windy weather to spend a night sleeping in the churchyard to raise money for the Robes Project homeless shelters.

This year's event aims to raise £130,000 - half of the project's running costs - to help it run shelters in two locations each night of the winter.

The Robes Project rehoused 44 people last year, and the previous event raised more than £100,000, with over 120 people taking part.

Speaking ahead of the event, Bill Bailey said: "Homelessness should not be happening in our advanced society, and

we must do all that we can to help those who spend every night sleeping rough.

“It is vital that everyone should have a safe, dry and warm place that they can call home.

"I applaud anyone who is willing to join the SleepOut and raise as much as they can to get people off the streets this winter.”

A NEW music festival at Burgess Park will see local talent rub shoulders with a yet-to-beannounced global superstar, and broadcast all over the world.

‘This Side Up 2018’ is slated to come to Southwark for two days on September 8 and 9.

A full line up of artists and activities has yet to be announced. But the festival has been backed by Peckhamborn dance music artist Katy B, and platinum-selling rapper and singer Tinie Tempah, who grew up in Greenwich.

It is being organised by Peckham man Simon Beresford, in association with Southwark Council and a range of local organisations and charities.

Simon is also negotiating with “international broadcasters” who would televise and stream the event online. This, he said, will be key to finding a line up topped by a “global star”, as well as artists representing musical styles from all over the world.

“Southwark is a hotbed of artistic and design talent,” Simon said. “It’s time we put that talent on the map. We want local people to benefit from the unique

concert concept behind This Side Up. “That could be by helping us curate the event, working alongside worldleading event industry professionals or from re-investing profits from the event back into local creative community projects. We also want the Burgess Park Festival to grow over time – not just a one-off – so that businesses and brands will want to invest in the area now and into the future.”

The festival will form part of Southwark’s bid to become the London Borough of Culture, which comes with the reward of £1m from the Mayor of London for spending on the arts.

Councillor Johnson Situ, the council’s cabinet member for business and culture, said: “As part of our bid for the London Borough of Culture we are looking at opportunities to celebrate the huge diversity of talent across Southwark.

“We know Southwark has a huge appetite for music and many talented musicians and international artists. Staff hope to re-open cherished Peckham pub PECKHAM

CHERISHED PECKHAM pub The Gowlett will soon reopen following its sudden closure last week, the former manager has said.

The pub’s closure was announced on Facebook and Twitter on November 13, with a message that said: “It is with a heavy heart that today we have had to take the decision to close The Gowlett.”

On November 17, publican Johnny Henfrey told the News: “We have been trying to get a package together for the staff to take over the management. But we ran out of time and I had to close it.

“Long and the short of it is, I ran out of money and energy and what I

needed to do was stop trading.

“At the end of the day I just lost the will to fight for it. It wasn’t making any profit and it got to the point where various people needed paying immediately and I just couldn’t do it.”

“It feels like a real loss, like I’m grieving.”

The next steps will be for Johnny’s general manager Jack Burbage to take over and become the pub’s new tenant, after signing with landlord Punch Taverns. It is hoped this will happen “in the next few weeks”.

Days after its closure, a crowdfunding page was set up to help staff get through the time they faced without wages. Within three days, 80 people had donated over £1,500.

The crowdfunder was set up by Mark Gilbert, who promotes ones of

the pub’s club nights, Eccentrics Disco.

Johnny added: “The staff have been paid, but at the moment they don’t have a job because the pub isn’t open.

But the response has been amazing.

It’s what upset me most – that these people don’t have work in the run up to Christmas.”

In April this year, the Gowlett was served with a noise abatement order

Developer Londonewcastle had a similar proposal rejected by Southwark Council last year, because it failed to abide by the council’s 35 per cent affordable housing policy.

The company’s new plans, which could be decided by planning committee before Christmas, include 29 flats in a five-storey building and a six-storey building. This time it offers 30 per cent affordable housing.

Michelle told the News: “We objected to the plans last year because the building would block out the sun from reaching our communal area, which everyone in the flats here enjoys, and where we can watch our kids playing. With another building next to us we would be boxed in.

And if we wanted to move there’s no way we would be able to afford find somewhere new in this area.” Co-operative House is made of four buildings forming a horseshoe shape, which lets sunlight pour into its courtyard and communal space from the south east throughout the year.

Forty-five local residents formally objected to the plans, and Michelle said a handful of Rye Lane businesses were concerned that the construction would bring noise, HGVs and disruption.

A spokesperson for Londonewcastle said: “Londonewcastle is keen to invest in the site’s regeneration, bringing a brownfield site back into active use and contributing to Peckham’s vitality and vibrancy.

“Londonewcastle submitted the proposals in May 2016, and have since been working extensively with Southwark Council to introduce a number of improvements in response to officers’ and residents’ comments regarding the original application. These include a revised design, reduced scale and massing and an increased affordable housing offering.”

KING’S COLLEGE Hospital is routinely to screen patients for HIV after a pilot scheme found 32 new cases of the condition.

A twelve-month pilot was launched at the Camberwell hospital in 2016 to tackle the frequency of late HIV diagnoses in Southwark and Lambeth – which have been identified as having the highest prevalence of the condition in the UK. A total of 24,037 adults requiring a blood test in the hospital’s emergency department were screened for the condition.

Around half of those who tested positive were considered late diagnoses and would have been at high risk of developing AIDS, which would have significantly lowered their life expectancy had they not have been started on antiretroviral medication.

Those diagnosed with HIV have been given support and advice, and put on treatment plans to manage their condition.

Three patients who had previously been diagnosed but had not received any follow-up care were also put on treatment programmes.

The testing initiative, which was launched thanks to a funding grant from the Elton John AIDS Foundation, will now continue indefinitely at the hospital.

Dr Killian Quinn, a consultant in sexual health at King’s, said the test was quick and easy, with results

available within a few days, meaning patients can be put on medication immediately.

“When HIV is detected and treated early, antiretroviral medication can be so effective the virus can become undetectable in some patients, meaning they can no longer pass the virus on to others,” said Dr Quinn.

“With the sophisticated medicines now available, HIV is no longer a death sentence but a treatable condition.

“One of the most common reasons people develop complications is because they don’t know they have the infection.”

March 2017 as a result of the test, added: “Initially, I was in shock but the sexual health team at King’s have been incredibly supportive and talked me through everything.

“Nine months on and I’m feeling much better, and thanks to the antiviral medication my HIV infection is at an undetectable level.

CAMBERWELL LIBRARY has celebrated receiving The Bookseller’s Library of the Year award.

To mark the occasion, Councillor Johnson Situ, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for business, culture and social regeneration, was joined by author Sophie Hannah, library staff, and a crowd of more than 60 people.

Visits to the library have almost doubled and new borrowers have tripled since it was opened in 2015.

Among other things, staff deliver, recommend and summarise large print books and audiobooks for Southwark Pensioners Centre’s

visually-impaired Eye-To-Eye Group.

Volunteers have also helped deliver 250 hours of community sessions, like homework help and reading buddies, and the library also runs baby and toddler activities and internet taster and job-hunting sessions.

Cllr Situ commented: “This award recognises the council’s commitment to maintaining and improving its library service, but local people have really taken ownership of this wonderful space and made it their own as well.

Lordship Lane vet now gets recognised by youngsters

Dr Rory Cowlam, who is based at The Neighbourhood Vet on Lordship Lane, is one of four vets on hand to treat poorly pets on the popular kids TV programme.

In the new series, presented by Stacey Dooley, Rory helps unwell hedgehogs at a wildlife sanctuary and performs a lifesaving procedure on a cat with a blocked bladder.

The 25-year-old said: “The sole reason for me to do the series was to inspire kids. It’s all about education.

“It’s the first show of its type for kids and the response has gone far

beyond what we imagined.”

At just three-years-old Rory visited the vets with his first dog, Lulu, and decided there and then he wanted to work with animals. After growing up

in the Cotswolds near Cirencester, Rory moved to London to train at the Royal Veterinary College, based near King’s Cross, joining the East Dulwich practice a year ago.

AN EAST DULWICH vet is set to return to TV screens this week in the second series of CBBC’s The Pets Factor.

When his colleagues spotted a BBC advert looking for vets to take part in a new TV programme they decided to put Rory forward. After competing against more than 100

other candidates for the job, the first series of The Pets Factor aired in June this year. Earlier this month, in recognition for his work, Rory appeared on Blue Peter and was awarded his very own badge. “It was a childhood dream to the max,” he laughs, “I went full on ten-year-old boy!”

He is also getting recognised by The Pets Factor fans. “If I’m out walking down the road in my scrub top, sometimes people recognise me, but generally it’s the kids coming into the practice,” he says.

“There’s a full range from excited ones to others hiding behind mum because they’ve gone a bit shy.”

Rory is a big social media fan with more than 14,000 followers on Instagram, where he regularly posts pictures with his patients.

“I’ve always been big on social media, it’s a passion of mine,” he explains. “An industry is not in the 21st Century without social media, and as vets we can use it to educate people and raise awareness for animal welfare.”

Overground to go 24 hours from December

A 24-HOUR Overground service will connect to the night Tube network at Canada Water from December, it has been announced.

Trains on the night Overground network will run 24 hours a day on Fridays and Saturdays on the east London line from December 15.

Initially, the night Overground will run between New Cross Gate and Dalston Junction and will connect with the night Tube at Canada Water on the Jubilee line.

From next year, it will also extend to Highbury and Islington on the Victoria line.

All stations along the route will be staffed at all times while trains are running, with CCTV, modern lighting and help points throughout.

Cinema and carpark made Pub manager set to assets of community value leave The Tankard PECKHAM

THE PECKHAMPLEX cinema and multi-storey carpark in Peckham have been listed as an Asset of Community Value, helping to protect it from future development.

THE MANAGER of The Tankard pub in Walworth Road has told the News will leave next year, leading to concerns it could close.

Southwark Council confirmed the listing on November 13, after a campaign by community group Peckham Vision which started in September.

It also follows the group’s campaign to get the carpark and cinema taken out of the council’s New Southwark Plan, which had the site earmarked for being turned into flats.

Peckham Vision’s Eileen Conn told the News: “Some months earlier we had been able to encourage over 5,000 local people to write into the council, in the planning policy process, with their views against demolition.

“The listing as an Asset of Community Value means that the council has to give the social uses of the building a very high priority in planning its long term future. We have shown that local people

working together can change decisions in the complicated planning world.”

There is just over two weeks to go before the Peckham Levels project opens in the carpark on December 8,

with over 70 new businesses and organisations expecting to fill its floors.

Tom Mitchell, 55, said he is likely to be out by April.

Tom, who has been manager since January 2010, said the business had become “unviable”, and pub company Greene King has agreed to buy him out of his lease.

“The Tankard was good for the first five years, but for the last two or three years the population of our pub has got a lot smaller,” Tom said.

“We’re just a local drinking man’s pub, and I don’t think that business model is viable anymore. The industry has changed, and everyone knows that the way to make money with pubs now is to make them more like restaurants. We just don’t have the space to do that here.

“Last January I actually asked Greene King to give me a discount on the beer [from whom Tom buys his stock] because we weren’t making enough profit.”

The north Londoner, who manages the pub with his daughter, added:

“Just to be clear, I was thinking of leaving anyway. I’ve been here seven years, and I think about every six or seven years a pub needs a new face and new ideas, otherwise it gets a bit stale.”

Tom said he doesn’t know what would happen to the building, which has stood since the 1860s, after he leaves. “We know the people with the deepest pockets are building firms,” Tom said, “but I know a lot of local people will be sad if it doesn’t stay as a pub.”

Greene King told the News they did not wish to comment.

S AN eco-auditor, I deliver workshops to Southwark & London charities, who provide advice to vulnerable residents, on how they can help clients save money using eco-tips, on energy, food, transport and shopping.

I usually include the help available from the local council.

Last week, I gave such a workshop to a Camden charity. The help available from Camden Council was impressive: 1/ Free home-energy efficiency visits to residents on benefits, to provide money saving advice.

2/ Free Green Camden phoneline, offering advice on energy saving grants.

3/ Free radiator heat reflectors, draught-excluders, water-tank jackets, energy-saving bulbs etc for pensioners, disabled etc 4/ Grants for private homeowners/tenants, if elderly or on benefits for loft and wall insulation.

5/ Grants for landlords to make homes warmer for tenants.

6/ Camden Climate Fund – grants for renewable-energy schemes for businesses, charities and homes.

I thought I would write this week’s column about council help available to Southwark’s pensioners, disabled and low income residents, to keep them warm and alive in winter, now that the winter chill is biting.

It took a while to find the council’s energy-efficiency section on their dreadful new website.

There were three almost totally blank pages about energy efficiency.

But my blood boiled when I realised that the sum total of Southwark’s help was ZERO. From my search there was not a SINGLE project or scheme listed to help local vulnerable people!!!

Unlike Scandinavia, thousands of extra pensioners die of cold in the UK every winter, including Southwark.

Come on Cllr John, start protecting the lives of Southwark’s vulnerable residents from terrible deaths in our cold winters. If Labour Camden can do it, so can New Labour Southwark – no excuses.

WE HAVE been successful in getting the Peckham Multi Storey listed as an Asset of Community Value.

We nominated this in September and you carried a report on the story. Now it has been accepted by the council and the building has to be put on the list of buildings which are offered protection from sale.

Our nomination of the building added to the growing evidence we were developing for the Public Hearings into the New Southwark Plan that the plan for redevelopment of that site was unsound and would interfere with the approval of the whole Plan.

Some months earlier we had been able to encourage over 5000 local people to write in to the council, in the planning policy process, with their views against demolition.

As a result of all this the council finally decided a few weeks ago (reported by you) to take the site out of the New Southwark Plan and extend the leases of the businesses in the building. The site will come up for planning policy again sometime in the next ten to fifteen years.

No Christmas puppies

WITH WEEKS to go until Christmas, Dogs Trust is urging people not to fuel a cruel puppy trade – albeit unintentionally – by purchasing an illegally imported puppy.

The warning comes after record number of puppies were seized in just one week during a covert operation at the UK border with many more expected to be smuggled into the country undetected as devious importers hone in on the Christmas trade.

charity we exposed the horrors of the illegal importation of puppies earlier this year as the demand for in-trend breeds such as French Bulldogs and Pugs continue to help fuel this sickening trade. We’ve seen cases of bitches being smuggled across pregnant as importers find sinister new ways to get them through the border undetected.

Despite many people’s purchases being well intended, unbeknown to them the internet has become a thriving marketplace for advertising illegally imported puppies. As a result we’ve produced some buyer advice to help people make sensible choices and avoid being tricked into buying puppies which have been illegally imported from Central and Eastern Europe.

Illegally importing puppies needs to end now. We urge the Government to improve this failing legislation. This includes increasing penalties for those illegally importing puppies and a significant overhaul of the pet checking system at ports. We need EU workers RESPONDING TO the Home Office announcement on the settled status scheme for EU citizens.

Skills and labour from the EU play an important role with one in five small business employers having at least one EU worker. These businesses rely on EU employees to grow, thrive and survive.

The new settled status scheme for EU citizens provides mixed messages.

The proposed fee structure, which will see people charged up to the cost of a British passport – a ceiling that could be at least £72.50, has the potential to deter many EU citizens from staying in the UK. We want the Government to be transparent about how it has reached this figure and what analysis has been undertaken on the impact on EU citizens living and working in the UK. This sends a worrying signal to EU citizens and there is a real risk that the

small business community may face a talent drain post-Brexit. We would like to see a fee structure that is as affordable as possible and alleviates this risk.

On a more positive note, it is pleasing to see Government striving to make the future application system streamlined and user friendly. This is an issue that FSB has been advocating for some time and we welcome the fact that efforts are being made to limit the paperwork required for Settled Status.

Sign Parkinson petition

OUR COUNTRY’S disability benefits system is failing those who need it the most, as well as costing us an unnecessary amount of money.

Your readers may be shocked to hear that reassessing everyone with Parkinson’s who received Daily Living Allowance (DLA) for the replacement benefit Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will cost the taxpayer £3 million. These pointless reassessments that are being rolled out across London are happening despite the fact that people with Parkinson’s won’t get better.

The Government is throwing millions of pounds away on an assessment process that is broken. PIP is meant to help manage the extra costs of a condition, but in fact a quarter of people with Parkinson’s are losing some, or all, of their award.

Why is the Government taking away the support they were previously told they’d have for life?

This is simply devastating. That’s why Parkinson’s UK is calling on the Government to automatically move people with Parkinson’s on the highest rate of DLA to PIP, without the need for reassessment.

’M WRITING this column a week before the Chancellor will deliver the Budget.

I see every week in my surgeries and around my constituency the devastating impacts that this government’s policies are having on many people. So, in advance of budget day, I’ve set out the policies I would like to see the Chancellor commit to which would really make a difference.

Fair taxes: Tax avoidance and evasion means that there is less money to spend on the public services like our NHS and social care, which we rely on. The Paradise Papers show that tax avoidance is happening on a huge scale, and the government must act to tackle this unacceptable behaviour. We also need steps to address the unfair increase in business rates that has hit thousands of small businesses in my constituency, while many internet retailers have seen their bills drop.

A step change in housing and infrastructure: Since the Lib Dem-Tory coalition government took power the number of new social homes funded by government grant has dropped by a staggering 97%. The government must lift the cap on council borrowing to fund housing, commit to grant funding for new social housing, abolish the Lib-Dem Tory viability assessments, set clear timescales for landowners to deliver on approved planning and applications, and call time on land banking.

We also need investment in infrastructure to support growing communities and create skilled jobs – I’d like to see the Chancellor commit to investment in renewable energy, internet broadband and home insulation, and locally, to fund the reopening of Camberwell Station.

Real fair funding for our schools, NHS and councils: The Lib Dem-Tory Coalition’s cuts hit our schools, NHS services and local councils harder than almost anywhere in the country. Despite pledges to the contrary every school in my constituency has suffered devastating cuts, our hospitals and GPs are underfunded and our local councils have seen devastating cuts to their government grants of more than 50%. All of these vital services must be funded properly and fairly by the government in this year’s budget.

A pay rise for our nurses, teachers and police: I’m proud of the hard work of the thousands of nurses, teachers, police and other public servants in our hospitals, schools and councils. They have seen their pay cut in real terms every year since the Lib-Dem Tory coalition was elected. They deserve a pay rise and this must be fully funded by the government so that a pay rise for some doesn’t result in more cuts or redundancies for others.

Roll up, roll up for Barnum

THE LEGENDARY P.T. Barnum once said ‘Every man should make his child learn some useful trade or profession, so that in these days of changing fortunes they may have something tangible to fall back on’.

Well Laura Pitt-Pulford’s parents didn’t force her into a career of acting but they were very supportive of her choice when she was growing up in Warwickshire. Now, after moving to London to train at Mountview Academy, she has an Olivier nomination tucked into her belt and is currently rehearsing her role in the award-winning musical Barnum, writes Michael Holland.

Even so, this lady who is fast earning a reputation as a theatre legend, took time away from rehearsals to talk to Weekender and was keen to tell me that acting was something she had loved doing from an early age - ‘but it wasn’t ’til I was about 13/14 that I realised this was something I could potentially consider as a career’. She recalls how her parents were behind her theatrical pursuits and ‘they’ve been there through the tough times as well,’ she says.

Go wilde in Brockley

A

lgernon Moncrieff is a young man who makes sure he enjoys his life and will even lie to friends and family about a make-believe sick friend who needs regular visits in order for his enjoyment of life to run smoothly. His friend John Worthing, similarly, has created a fake brother alter ego, Ernest Worthing, that allows him to be louche and lecherous in London under this guise while his rural friends remain innocently unaware that he is anything other than an upstanding pillar of the country community. It is the farcical falling apart of these masquerades that become the bones to which the literary meat is hung, writes Michael Holland.

This is the world of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest where the Victorian mores of Lady Bracknell reign supreme and the young women are not the shy, retiring types of novels

from that era. Wilde creates strongwilled women who make the rules and make weak men do their bidding, and none more so than the domineering Lady Augusta Bracknell, aunt of Algernon and mother of Lady Gwendolyn Fairfax, for whom she wants to find a suitable husband. At the outset ‘Ernest’ wants to fill that position but he, alas, is not even on Lady B’s list of eligible suitors.

In Act Two, when the action moves from London to the country, ‘Ernest’ returns to being John and Algernon assumes the role of ‘Ernest’ in order to get his sticky fingers on a young miss. It is also where we get to meet John’s young ward Cecily Cardew (EmilyRose Clarkson)who gets to steal every scene she’s in. The farce starts to flow rather fast as all the characters turn up unannounced one by one to take us to the end.

Harriet Earle’s Bracknell is masterful in the role of puppet-mastering her family and those who want to get ‘hands

on’ with her rather flirty daughter; her epigrams and repartee put her head and shoulders above any of the men here.

She probably has the best lines, but Wilde is very good at giving all the characters their moments to shine in this, one of his best plays. Ms Cardew certainly makes the most of what she has to work with, and Daniel Desiano gives a great, understated performance as both butlers, but for me it is Daniel Hall as Algernon who stands out. He looks like an Algernon, sounds like an Algernon and on the night I was there he got a fat lip from Cecily for being Algernon! Ouch! Wilde’s words are a wonder of wit and hilarity that brighten up any stage, and his genius is shown here via excellent turns from all the cast.

character tells us that there are no nations with borders anymore, but that ‘the world is a business’.

With Jan Versweyveld’s set and Ivo van Hove’s direction, the action scurries around from TV studio to restaurant to meeting room, and can be viewed ‘live’ on any of the multitude of screens. Howard Beale even steps down into the stalls to make his speech more personal; at one point two of the characters who are secret lovers actually meet on the Southbank and a camera follows them as they head back into the theatre and into the ‘restaurant’ - all viewed via the screens.

Network is not perfect. Yes, there was a lot of shouting between TV execs, but that’s because they were placed so far apart to fill the huge stage; and sometimes you could hear actors speaking and not know where they were amongst the hordes of people on the stage, until you checked a screen and realised they were in the meeting office or the control room, sometimes sitting at a

‘restaurant’ table. In fact, I was not always sure who was an actor and who was serving dinner because it was all a bit too hectic at times. At one stage I noticed a screening of one of the three Ali v Norton fights which distracted me for at least two rounds.

But this is a fantastic piece of theatre.

Brian Cranston as Beale has us pinned to our seats during the long speeches he makes to camera, and standing in admiration at the end.

The US in the 70s was a country with home-grown terrorism, the rich getting richer, media lies and the overwhelming technological overload being the big news of the day, so Howard Beale’s mantra was ‘I’m mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore’. Forty years on Network’s resonance today is resolutely clear.

Disgruntled, during the next broadcast he says ‘Bullshit’ a couple of times and tells the viewers that he would be blowing his brains out during his forthcoming final broadcast. Bosses rage but ratings go up so Beale keeps his job and a young go-getting TV executive advances the idea that he should have his own ‘angry man’ show.

Beale’s outrage at society and the way his industry is going feeds in to the anger on the streets; these are troubled times for the US and he is echoing what the nation thinks.

Before long the station has the No.1 show but their star is disintegrating mentally. His screen rants are unsettling those in power.

Something will have to give.

Network could not be more relevant to our time. It tells of not believing TV’s ‘truth’ while we are in the midst of a ‘fake news’ debacle; we constantly hear of multinational media companies telling us just what they want us to know, and one

WALKING FROM the gloomy, underlit National Theatre foyer into the Lyttleton auditorium was a real shock to the system Inside it was light, bright and buzzing, writes Michael Holland.

In 2015 Laura received her nomination for her portrayal of Milly in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, which she says was ‘a huge honour and something I only ever dreamed of happening’. She added that ‘an Olivier nomination brings a huge sense of achievement’.

But it is now 2017 and there is new work to be created. I asked Ms Pitt-Pulford what drew her to Barnum. ‘I’m always excited by the idea of taking a huge show and fitting it into an intimate space, like the Menier Chocolate Factory,’ she begins. ‘It requires extreme imagination and truth and really enables us to focus on the story… There is a lot of heart in this show and this space really lends itself to that.’

She plays Charity Barnum, P.T.’s wife, a ‘strong, straight talking, no messing woman who is incredibly practical…

Some would say she is quite cold but I disagree. To be a strong, practical woman doesn’t mean you have to be shut off and this very much shows in the scenes between her and Barnum.’

The Barnum role will be played by Marcus Brigstocke and Laura reveals that rehearsals are going ‘incredibly well’ and that ‘a very happy, supportive company are having a lot of fun putting this show together’. She talks excitedly of the ‘many challenges to overcome’ and the magic tricks and circus skills to be learnt, but also that it is very rewarding.

I have no doubt that this spectacle of circus and side-show legends will be just as rewarding for audiences.

London’s African Tudors

A NEW history book uncovers London’s forgotten black Tudors, including a Southwarkbased silk trader.

Black Tudors by historian Dr Kaufmann, a senior research fellow at the University of London’s Institute of Commonwealth Studies, was published on October, 5 to coincide with the annual Black History Month.

Dr Kaufmann’s painstaking research has found evidence of more than 360 Africans living in Tudor and Stuart Britain.

The book pieces together the stories of ten real-life characters, and paints a vivid picture of what life was like for the migrants who lived as free men and women before Britain became involved in the slave trade.

Dr Kaufmann argues: “They lived in a world where skin colour was less important than religion, class or talent.”

Some Africans were known by unusual monikers referencing their skin colour, but despite being seen as oddities by their peers, many were accepted in society and achieved great success.

One of the ten real-life figures she researched is a “Mr Reasonable Blackman”, who lived near London Bridge from 1579-1592 and worked as a silk weaver.

Reasonable first appeared in records

at St Saviour’s parish in 1579, a church on the site of what is now Southwark Cathedral. He lived near Tooley Street for almost two decades.

Dr Kaufmann says that missing records mean that she cannot be certain, but it likely that Reasonable found his way to London from the Netherlands.

The lowland country was a European cloth manufacturing hub during the sixteenth century and was known for its sizeable African population. At the time, the silk industry was new to England, and very fashionable.

Reasonable went on to marry and have a family of at least three children, but tragedy struck when a 1592 outbreak of plague killed both his daughter Jane, and son, Edmund.

His children were buried at St Olave’s Church on Tooley Street, but Reasonable’s fate is unknown.

St Olaf’s Church had several incarnations from the Saxon period onwards before finally being demolished in 1926.

The site is now St Olaf’s House, part of London Bridge Hospital, but the name lives on in the local St Olave’s and St Saviour’s Schools.

Dr Kaufmann explains that is was likely that Reasonable set up shop in Southwark as in the sixteenth century the area did not fall under the jurisdiction of the City of London.

Workers in the City were subject to strict regulations, and were required to join guilds to trade.

I DON’T mind admitting I was a little anxious about visiting Titbits, a vegetarian and vegan restaurant and bar, as there was no fishy safety net to catch me, no tender breast of chicken to soften the fall if I could not go through a meal without the flesh of an animal passing my lips. I invited Fiona to come and hold my hand. She is a good friend and a vegetarian of many years standing, so I felt safe in her company, writes Michael Holland...

Titbits is run on a buffet system with the food in a central island that gets topped up regularly, and drinks ordered at the bar. The novelty here is that the food is costed by weight, so you join a queue of people placing

their plates on the scales and charged accordingly.

The chefs at Titbits obviously know what they are doing and are not just cooking vegetables and pulses merely as an accompaniment to something else, but as the main attraction. I soon became quite excited when I saw the many creative dishes on offer, like a kid in a sweet shop.

What I did like was the opportunity to sample small portions of dishes I’ve never tried before knowing I could go back for more if I really liked it. Titbits gave me the chance to discover new foods and fruits. Who knew that Persimmon was so delicious?

Even more so with Walnuts and a Sambal Dressing. And now I’ve actually tried the product that non-vegetarians always use for mocking purposes and found that quinoa is very nice, especially curried with cranberries.

We began with a cold plate to start, plus a beverage; me having a Freedom Pale Ale and Fiona a Virgin Mojito, which she emphasised was excellent. ‘Make sure you write that down,’ she said. And seeing as Fiona can be a bit scary, I did! The two of us then circled the island of goodies with our plates. It was carnival of colour. Nothing looked boring.

Hardly anything was served plainly but with a spice or herb, a berry or a nut. Fiona sprinkled sunflower seeds over her plate, so I copied her. At our table we both agreed that the artichokes were delicious.

The buffet is the first thing you encounter before you are led to a conservatory at the rear where natural light can pour in to the dining area below in the daytime, and which is mood lit at night - It is where couples were sitting over bottles of wine and small sharing plates. It is a place for conversation as there is no music playing - Or, if there is, it was barely discernible. Architects have designed something extremely modern in an old building.

Over drinks and food we chatted about shared friends, work, drinking responsibly and not having the Sicilian wine. After a decent interval of gossip and digestion we returned to the buffet to choose some of the hot dishes. There were spicy dishes in tomato sauce; sweet and sour vegetables, squash curries; there were basic potato wedges, onion rings, steamed rices, samosas, spinach and kale falafel, pasta dishes and bean delights, and all looking rather superb under the lighting.

Everything had its own unique flavour and some tastes were quite intriguing, but not once did I get meat withdrawal symptoms; nothing seemed tired or been-there-done-that, but new and fresh. I found the Brussel Sprouts with onion and pepperoncini oil decidedly special, and a step up from boringly boiled sprouts. And all the food went surprisingly well with a Chilean Malbec, but no surprise there…

Of course we had to try the desserts, and I was somewhat more taken with the Vegan Raspberry Cheesecake than the Molten Chocolate Cake, which was more like rock than molten.

Those who have already made the leap to vegetarianism will know of Titbits. Carnivores, however, should not be afraid to go for lunch or dinner there. It doesn’t hurt. In fact it is quite a pleasant experience.
